:01:38. > :01:41.

:01:41. > :01:45.Byrne. CHEERING. Each week, we send a team of school children out to

:01:45. > :01:55.follow the Olympic torch so, Dempsey from BBC News School Report

:01:55. > :01:57.

:01:57. > :02:00.100,000 welcomes. This week in the first stop for the torch in

:02:00. > :02:07.Northern Ireland is in my home town of Belfast and I have the privilege

:02:07. > :02:12.of running with the torch myself. First, let us look at where the

:02:12. > :02:17.torch has been over the last week. Cardiff to Liverpool. Olympic fever

:02:17. > :02:22.hit Wales last Saturday, seeing Matt Smith and former Blue Peter

:02:22. > :02:26.presenter Gethin Jones carrying the Olympic flame and on Monday, Chris

:02:26. > :02:34.Moyles was the surprise celebrity torch-bearer in Aberystwyth. By

:02:34. > :02:38.Tuesday of the torch had reached the very top of Mount Snowdon. Amir

:02:38. > :02:48.Khan carried the torch through his home town of Bolton on Thursday and

:02:48. > :03:07.

:03:07. > :03:11.on Friday it was greeted by This is Belfast's newest landmark,

:03:11. > :03:18.the Titanic museum, built to commemorate the 100 anniversary of

:03:18. > :03:24.the ship which was built right here in Belfast. Welcome to Victoria

:03:24. > :03:30.Square shopping centre. It cost 400 million to build and has 90 it

:03:30. > :03:40.shops. I hope you have enjoyed this whistle-stop tour of Belfast. I am

:03:40. > :03:43.

:03:43. > :03:50.Dempsey is with us. That was amazing. You went shopping at the

:03:50. > :03:55.end, by anything nice? Yes, there is good shopping. Check out your

:03:55. > :04:01.shoes! Look at those! They are fabulous. They will be in the

:04:01. > :04:10.raffle. You will be carrying the Olympic torch. Why? I have been

:04:10. > :04:19.very successful with my ice-skating. 16 times gold medallist. You kept

:04:19. > :04:27.it quiet! That is incredible. Dempsey! We had a word with the BBC

:04:27. > :04:31.and they will how you next week for television shows! The deal is done.

:04:31. > :04:34.The Olympic torch is on its way to Belfast, stopping off in the Isle

:04:34. > :04:41.of Man and there are various ways it has been transported around the

:04:41. > :04:46.country. It is currently 20,000 ft in the air. On board a plane. Do

:04:46. > :04:51.they keep it alight? They do. The use a special miner's lamp to make

:04:51. > :04:58.sure that the flame does not go out and to ensure that it arrives in

:04:58. > :05:04.Belfast in one piece. Sam, Jack, you are excited? Why is that?

:05:04. > :05:13.Because of the football. And what about you, Sam? The swimming and

:05:13. > :05:17.diving. What about Tom Daley? s! Ethan, lean forward. How many

:05:17. > :05:23.Blue Peter badges do you have? of them! Give him a round of

:05:23. > :05:26.applause! I can feel the excitement in the air, but only because of the

:05:26. > :05:34.Olympic flame but because of our special guest, creeping onto the

:05:34. > :05:42.stage. I'll give you at home some clues. He is one member of a band

:05:42. > :05:50.that has had 14 number one UK singles. That band has sold 44

:05:50. > :05:55.million records! It is, of course, Nicky Byrne from Westlife! Hello!

:05:55. > :06:01.Thank you for joining us. On the bid fever is gripping the nation.

:06:01. > :06:06.What are you looking forward to? Everything that will go on. But we

:06:06. > :06:10.have a girl in Ireland called Katie Taylor who is a very good boxer,

:06:10. > :06:14.the world champion, so I am looking forward to see if she can bring

:06:14. > :06:21.home gold for Ireland. Fingers crossed. Not many people realise

:06:21. > :06:27.that used to be a footballer? moons ago! You should enjoy this

:06:27. > :06:31.next film, we will give you a guide to Olympic sports. This week, it is

:06:31. > :06:41.football and the host is none other than Team GB manager, Stuart

:06:41. > :06:49.

:06:49. > :06:52.Il Stuart Pearce, manager of Sir -- Olympic football. Football has been

:06:52. > :06:55.part of the Olympics for over 100 years, first played in London in

:06:55. > :07:01.1908. Great Britain even won gold at years so let's hope we can

:07:01. > :07:06.repeat that this time around. for the first time another 30 years,

:07:06. > :07:10.footballers from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were

:07:10. > :07:14.joined together as Team GB, to try to win the men's and women's

:07:14. > :07:19.Olympic gold medals. And these games will be played at some of the

:07:19. > :07:22.country's most prestigious football grounds. Over 500 men and women

:07:22. > :07:28.will be playing and because of the large amounts of matches, football

:07:28. > :07:32.is the only event that will start before the opening ceremony. Stuart

:07:32. > :07:36.Pearce is only allowed to choose three players over the age of 23.

:07:36. > :07:40.That leaves some very famous faces nervously waiting to see if they

:07:40. > :07:45.have been selected. The way I will approach this is looking at the

:07:45. > :07:49.younger end of the squad and then three over-age players to fill in

:07:49. > :07:52.the places for we are possibly week and not as strong. Some of the

:07:52. > :07:58.world's best players have won Olympic gold medals, including

:07:58. > :08:05.Lionel Messi for Argentina in 2008 and Samuel Vettel, in 2000, he was

:08:05. > :08:08.part of the Cameroon side that won gold with this -- penalty shoot-out.

:08:08. > :08:17.We feel as though we will be pretty much prepared for the penalty

:08:17. > :08:23.shoot-out. I let the players from the music in the music room --

:08:23. > :08:29.dressing room. I think that is to block out the managers! They cannot

:08:29. > :08:33.hear us so much. I don't have the players what time to go to bed, I

:08:33. > :08:40.don't tuck them in. I leave it to their own professionalism to get

:08:40. > :08:46.themselves into bed. It should be fantastic, just for football but

:08:47. > :08:56.the whole country. That in the truest meaning of the word is a

:08:57. > :08:57.

:08:58. > :09:02.golden goal. He has stolen a dance! My little dance. How good would it

:09:02. > :09:10.be to get David Beckham and Ryan Giggs on the same team? You have

:09:10. > :09:15.played at Wembley? I have, 2008, we took part in soccer it. And it was

:09:15. > :09:21.celebrities and X professionals. It was great, playing with all these

:09:22. > :09:28.great players and in that stadium it was crazy. We want to make the

:09:28. > :09:33.most of this opportunity and testers go. Come this way. You have

:09:33. > :09:38.agreed to take part in a penalty shoot-out. Go down there, past the

:09:38. > :09:47.penalty-takers. We will be using this official Olympic ball, known

:09:47. > :09:57.as Albert. Anybody know why? A the Albert Hall! Cockney rhyming slang.

:09:57. > :10:05.

:10:05. > :10:09.This is what we will be using. And yes! If Nicky survives this he

:10:09. > :10:15.will perform with the boys it wrong and if he does not, he will be

:10:15. > :10:19.carried off. Go to the concert tonight, if he has black eyes, we

:10:19. > :10:24.are very sorry. To come down to Ormeau Park and Sales, this is free,

:10:24. > :10:28.you don't it a ticket and there are lots of things to try out. An

:10:28. > :10:36.assault course, Horrible Histories tent. Do come down, details on the

:10:36. > :10:46.Every week we look back at the history of the Olympics. That was a

:10:46. > :10:51.near miss! This week, we are going to the USA. 5, 4, 3, 2, one!

:10:51. > :10:54.1984 Olympic Games were held in Los Angeles in the USA. This is the

:10:54. > :11:00.home of Holywood and were some of the greatest movies of all time

:11:00. > :11:07.have been made. In fact, that year read like a script from a summer

:11:07. > :11:11.blockbuster. It even had some scandal. It came in the 3000 metre

:11:11. > :11:16.women's final. American sweetheart Mary Decker was a favourite. And in

:11:16. > :11:20.front of the home crowd the scene was set for American Claudy. But

:11:20. > :11:25.her biggest rival was African-born Zola Budd, who competed for Great

:11:25. > :11:30.Britain. Zola Budd, who famously ran barefoot, was keen to take the

:11:30. > :11:36.crown away from the USA but how far was she when to go to get that?

:11:36. > :11:40.world champion caught her... And Mary Decker is down! Her Olympic

:11:41. > :11:45.Dreams were over and although Zola Budd did finish, she was

:11:45. > :11:50.disqualified after crossing the line. 1 R later, she was reinstated

:11:50. > :11:55.as the judges no longer thought it was her fault. Decca was very angry

:11:55. > :12:00.and refused to speak to Zola Budd about it. She tried to express

:12:01. > :12:10.herself. I said, don't bother. Despite all that the dot of, the

:12:11. > :12:12.

:12:12. > :12:17.collision in the race will be argued about four decades. Oh! You

:12:17. > :12:20.would be absolutely gutted. A let's be honest, she fell over! We could

:12:20. > :12:25.argue for years and that is one example of the emotion that goes

:12:25. > :12:30.with the Olympics. If you want to hear from a gold medal at lits,

:12:30. > :12:34.tune into Radio 5 Live every Sunday at 11:00am because Colin Murray is

:12:34. > :12:41.going to be tracking down some of our great Olympians. Let's look at

:12:42. > :12:45.what is still to come... We see if Nicky Byrne can match Steve

:12:45. > :12:52.Redgrave in our test of strength. And he will hold their nerve from

:12:52. > :12:57.the penalty spot in the Olympic challenge? Probably denied by the

:12:57. > :13:02.post. One of the activity is down here is the assault course right at

:13:02. > :13:06.the back of the playing field. I am a fine standing Olympian in fine

:13:06. > :13:15.form with my bulging muscles. I don't need to do this because we

:13:15. > :13:18.have an expert. Rav Wilding! Hello! I am at this very special Olympic

:13:18. > :13:22.challenge cause and I have not done anything like this since the army.

:13:22. > :13:28.You need all the skills, strength and determination of an athlete

:13:29. > :13:32.just to get through. Can I do it? Come on! Let's give it a go. You

:13:32. > :13:38.need to stride across these platforms, just like the triple

:13:38. > :13:44.jump. Then we charge through the cargo net. Energy-sapping. Just

:13:44. > :13:51.like Mr Usain Bolt would do in the 100 metres. The next section...

:13:51. > :13:56.This is very tricky. The springboard. Just like those divers.

:13:56. > :14:02.And I have made it. Now... This is the hardest part of the entire

:14:02. > :14:09.course. All about balance. Just like Olympic gymnasts. I don't want

:14:09. > :14:16.to fall off. What do you reckon? Oh! I made it through. This section

:14:16. > :14:22.is all about fancy footwork. Just like Mr David Beckham and the

:14:22. > :14:31.footballers. BO! Will I go through? It is a bit of a tight squeeze.

:14:31. > :14:41.But... I have made it! That was tough. If you fancy having a go,

:14:41. > :14:42.

:14:42. > :14:47.get down, loads of fun. I need to We could have made that more fun by

:14:47. > :14:51.throwing wet sponges at him! Thanks, Rav. That looks like loads of fun!

:14:52. > :14:56.Rav will be staying with us all day. Are we still having a good time,

:14:56. > :15:00.Belfast! CHEERING.

:15:00. > :15:04.Now, over the series we will be going behind the scenes to see what

:15:04. > :15:07.it takes to put together the London Olympics. Have you ever wondered

:15:07. > :15:15.what it will be like for the athletes staying in the Olympic

:15:15. > :15:20.Village? I managed to get a sneak- peek, when I went Access All Areas.

:15:20. > :15:26.The Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, has been under construction

:15:26. > :15:30.since May 2008. It took 46,000 workers to build it and is home to

:15:30. > :15:36.eight different arenas, as over the Games, we will see sporting history

:15:36. > :15:42.made. It's not just supporting been used at the Olympic Park. After

:15:42. > :15:45.competing, the athletes will need a place to rest. In the Olympic

:15:45. > :15:53.Village. I have an Access All Areas pass to see the bits you don't

:15:53. > :15:59.normally see. The 10,000 athletes will need 10,000 beds, and the man

:15:59. > :16:03.who has the task to get Mehdi is Tony Sainsbury. It is exciting to

:16:03. > :16:07.be in the Olympic village. It is the best plays to be in, you can

:16:08. > :16:13.keep the stadium, this is where the athletes win their medals. If we

:16:13. > :16:22.don't prepare them right, they won't do well out there. How do you

:16:22. > :16:26.work out who goes where? We have 204 Olympic committees. We give

:16:26. > :16:31.them the space. They make the decision based on what is best for

:16:31. > :16:36.their team. Close to the dining room. A quiet place. Usain Bolt

:16:36. > :16:46.could be here. I want to be able to say that I made what potentially

:16:46. > :16:48.

:16:48. > :16:53.could be, maybe, Usain Bolt's bed! William marks, get set. Go! The

:16:53. > :16:58.bedroom is now fully furnished. There is one problem I have

:16:58. > :17:03.discovered. If you are normal size, you can fit in quite easily. But,

:17:03. > :17:12.Usain Bolt is six feet five inches. Don't worry. They have thought

:17:12. > :17:16.about it. Watch this. An extension for the bed for taller athletes. I

:17:17. > :17:26.hope he stays in here, wouldn't it be great.

:17:27. > :17:28.

:17:28. > :17:32.APPLAUSE. If we had to share a room, I am so

:17:32. > :17:36.messy. But he is so organised. Winning Olympic gold is sometimes

:17:36. > :17:39.about being the fastest, but it can also be about being the strongest.

:17:39. > :17:46.So each week, we're testing the might and power of our special

:17:46. > :17:54.guest. I'm sorry to say, Nicky, that you are unlucky to be in the

:17:54. > :17:59.footsteps of Britain's greatest As you can see, he managed to get

:18:00. > :18:05.maximum points last week, by hitting the bell. I am feeling

:18:05. > :18:13.strong, but that is a lot of pressure. Let me talk to the

:18:13. > :18:17.audience. How well will he do? will do 100! Yes! You love Nicky

:18:17. > :18:22.Byrne, don't you! Can you match it? It is a hard act

:18:22. > :18:32.to follow. Great, he's giving it a go. Are we ready? Three. Two. One.

:18:32. > :18:34.

:18:34. > :18:44.It's hammer time! CHEERING. I am not tall enough. We

:18:44. > :18:44.

:18:44. > :18:47.will have to render it goes up there. We will get a ladder later.

:18:47. > :18:51.Now it's time for the second round of Blue Peter's Olympic Challenge.

:18:51. > :19:00.Last week, it was Brendan and Laura who stole the show, and share the

:19:00. > :19:06.top of the leader board. It wasn't a good start for me. In

:19:06. > :19:13.nine the Week event. It's time to find that if anything gets better

:19:13. > :19:18.for me. Time to hand over to Dan Walker. Welcome again. Helen,

:19:18. > :19:28.bonnet and four of their celebrity friends go head-to-head in these

:19:28. > :19:46.

:19:46. > :19:50.Athletes, greetings once again. We have come to the city of Madejski

:19:50. > :19:55.Stadium, a Premier League football ground. You will be taking

:19:55. > :20:01.penalties in this goal. We need someone who has done it, we need

:20:01. > :20:07.England's goalkeeper, Rachel! This squad will be taking penalties

:20:07. > :20:11.against you. What knowledge can you give them? If you pick your spot

:20:11. > :20:16.early, that is your best bet. If you changed your mind, it can go

:20:16. > :20:22.wrong. I think they're ready, are you ready? They should be warming

:20:22. > :20:27.up but two of our celebrities Cardiff where they are. This is mad

:20:27. > :20:31.that we on this pitch. For some of them, the chance to play on the

:20:31. > :20:35.Manchester City pitch is the least of their worries. I am frightened

:20:35. > :20:39.of footballs, and don't like them coming towards me. I am really

:20:39. > :20:43.scared. I have never played football before. A I have

:20:43. > :20:50.discovered I am no good at hurdles. Or football. I don't know what to

:20:50. > :21:00.do. As a training progresses, there is a fair bit of confidence. Helen

:21:00. > :21:00.

:21:00. > :21:04.is one to be watched. If she beats me on this, you are great, but, yes.

:21:04. > :21:10.In the nicest possible way, I am used to is slightly higher skill

:21:10. > :21:14.level. I think he could be really good.

:21:14. > :21:20.The heat is taking this for granted. I don't even know where he has

:21:20. > :21:24.gone! How athletes will begin right here. That moment where the palms

:21:24. > :21:30.get sweaty and you remember all those people over the years who

:21:30. > :21:36.famously missed from the penalty spot. It is hard to stay in his own.

:21:36. > :21:43.Footballing history is about to be made. They get five goes to score

:21:43. > :21:48.as many as they can. Here's your match commentator.

:21:48. > :21:56.Here they M -- here they are at the Getty had Stadium. Helen Skelton

:21:56. > :22:01.his first. She was looking good earlier. It is one of the bar. The

:22:01. > :22:04.cut Rachel celebrating as she punches the air.

:22:04. > :22:10.A chance to take an early lead but both were not able to take

:22:10. > :22:16.advantage. Round two, and three copycat

:22:16. > :22:22.penalties. Rachel, the goalkeeper, took the upper hand.

:22:22. > :22:30.Helen's didn't -- Helen still couldn't find the corner.

:22:30. > :22:38.Is this an opportunity. Bottom left, a great goal and what a celebration.

:22:38. > :22:46.Over-the-top acting a bit! They howled with a goalkeeper. An Oscar!

:22:46. > :22:49.Although the standard improved thankfully, no more goals was

:22:49. > :22:55.called as which will bruise why she is England goalkeeper.

:22:55. > :22:59.And, sudden death. Any footballer will tell you this

:22:59. > :23:08.is the most tense thing in the game. Focusing. Stepping up. Bottom

:23:08. > :23:17.corner. Really done. She knows she had the upper hand. Well taken. If

:23:17. > :23:23.she misses this, third place. Straight at the keeper. Safe hands.

:23:23. > :23:33.A Well done. A cheeky little winner. A very pleased with myself.

:23:33. > :23:35.

:23:35. > :23:39.Up steps Barney, looking composed. Right for it, he hit the post. The

:23:39. > :23:43.goalkeeper was beaten but the would work stopped him. Hope his

:23:43. > :23:48.confidence isn't shaken by that. Brendon struggled with his first

:23:48. > :23:54.penalty. Romeo went into the lead, sending Rachel the wrong way. And

:23:54. > :24:01.taking out the camera as well! Barney began to find his range, a

:24:01. > :24:05.fantastic strike in the right hand corner.

:24:05. > :24:11.And things really hotting up, Barney was a whisker away from

:24:11. > :24:17.scoring again. The England goalkeeper, brilliant. Ray mere

:24:17. > :24:24.takes the lead again. Things got worse for barley.

:24:24. > :24:27.Brendan slotted his away. Romeo, with a chance to take

:24:27. > :24:36.maximum points. The pressure is on but he thrives

:24:36. > :24:46.on pressure. A long run-up. He is pointing to the left hand. But he
