:01:53. > :02:03.Sunderland. Get ready for your Olympic countdown. Five, four,
:02:03. > :02:04.
:02:04. > :02:08.three, two, one... Hello, welcome to Blue Peter's Big
:02:08. > :02:12.Olympic Tour. This is your ultimate guide to the Olympics. We are
:02:12. > :02:22.following the Olympic Torch around the UK. This week we are delighted
:02:22. > :02:31.
:02:31. > :02:35.to be coming to you live from Hello!
:02:35. > :02:39.Where have we been so far. We started in Wales, Belfast,
:02:39. > :02:44.Dunbarton and now here we are on the opposite side of the coast in
:02:44. > :02:51.the north east in Sunderland. The torch had a very early start
:02:51. > :02:54.this morning. It was on the road at 6.25am. It is on its way here. In
:02:55. > :03:01.two hours' time it is going to be here in Herrington Country Park.
:03:01. > :03:05.This is the live footage now. It is two hours away.
:03:05. > :03:12.If you are anywhere near that torch, do get out and see it, because it
:03:12. > :03:16.is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Last week we showed a shot of Craig
:03:16. > :03:23.and had a tweet from his mum. We hope you enjoyed it. We are going
:03:23. > :03:31.to be at Herrington Country Park all day, it is a free event. All
:03:31. > :03:36.the details are on the website. Here is what is still to come.
:03:36. > :03:42.It is round four of our Olympic challenge, and we are in the vole
:03:42. > :03:46.drom trying -- velodrome, where we are trying out track cycling. We
:03:46. > :03:52.reveal the Horrible Histories Olympic song. You won't be able to
:03:52. > :04:02.get it out of your head. We are joined by two special guests,
:04:02. > :04:08.Joe McElderry and Matt Baker. Each week we send children out and about
:04:08. > :04:11.to follow the torch relay. So it is time to go over to Jacob from BBC
:04:11. > :04:16.News School Report who has been following the torch over the last
:04:16. > :04:20.week. Welcome to Sunderland. I am one of
:04:20. > :04:25.the people privileged to be holding the Olympic Torch today, but here
:04:25. > :04:32.is a round up of where the torch has been since last Saturday.
:04:32. > :04:35.The torch has travelled from Glasgow all around the Schett land
:04:35. > :04:41.-- Shetland Islands before finishing up in Newcastle. It was
:04:41. > :04:51.on Loch Ness and appeared on stage at the Loch Ness festival.
:04:51. > :04:57.
:04:57. > :05:03.It travelled on a gondola and mountain bank. It is really
:05:03. > :05:10.emotional. Crowds awaited the flame at Edinburgh castle. Last night it
:05:10. > :05:20.moved on to Newcastle. Now to Sunderland. Me and my school
:05:20. > :05:22.
:05:22. > :05:27.report crew are going to show you some of our area. Behind me is the
:05:27. > :05:32.monument. It is one of the area's best loved landmarks. It features
:05:33. > :05:38.on the crest of Sunderland FC, which is where we are heading next.
:05:38. > :05:48.This is the Stadium of Light, home of Sunderland Football Club. I am a
:05:48. > :05:49.
:05:49. > :05:54.big fan! Just outside the city, we are some
:05:54. > :06:02.beaches. Hope you liked what you saw of Sunderland. I am off to find
:06:02. > :06:08.the Olympic Torch. That monument that featured there,
:06:08. > :06:14.is right here by the park. Jacob is here. It is a big day for you. You
:06:14. > :06:19.are doing something special in a bit. Later on at 3.15, I am
:06:19. > :06:22.carrying the Olympic Torch through Hexham. Well done. You have the
:06:22. > :06:29.clothes on. Where is the torch?. You don't get the torch until you
:06:29. > :06:32.start. All the best for today. APPLAUSE
:06:32. > :06:39.What an exciting moment. Talk me through what you are looking
:06:39. > :06:48.forward to? I am looking forward to when the Olympic Torch goes passed
:06:48. > :06:58.Sunderland. High five to Michael. You have six Blue Peter badges. It
:06:58. > :07:09.
:07:09. > :07:14.# Time to say goodbye. It is the fabulous Joe McElderry.
:07:14. > :07:17.Welcome to the show. That was you doing opera, but you won the X
:07:17. > :07:24.factor. You have doing all kinds of things. Jack of all trades. I have
:07:24. > :07:31.a new album out on 17 September. It is like pop ballads. I have been
:07:31. > :07:34.writing on it. I finished last Saturday. It is all ready to go.
:07:34. > :07:41.should mention you are a good runner, because I met you at the
:07:41. > :07:48.Great North Run. You ran that 13 miles much people many people gave
:07:48. > :07:52.you credit for. I did it in one hour 39.
:07:52. > :07:55.We have been talking about the excitement of the Olympics and the
:07:55. > :08:02.home crowd. How do you cope with the nerves when you have loads of
:08:02. > :08:07.people looking. It spurs you on more. The bigger the crowd, the
:08:07. > :08:15.more adrenaline is pumping it through your body. You perform
:08:15. > :08:19.better. Can I say something, we know today is a big day, but it is
:08:19. > :08:27.your 21st birthday. It is, yes. Happy birthday Joe. We have a cake
:08:27. > :08:33.for you as well. You didn't have to, thank you very much.
:08:33. > :08:41.Congratulations Joe. It's time for us to get stuck into
:08:41. > :08:51.our next Olympic guide. We bring you an insiders guide to an Olympic
:08:51. > :08:53.
:08:53. > :09:00.event. Today it is the turn of Paralympian Sarah Storey.
:09:00. > :09:05.I am Sarah Storey. Here is your Blue Peter guide to cycling.
:09:05. > :09:15.Sarah is one of Great Britain's most successful athletes. She's won
:09:15. > :09:17.
:09:17. > :09:20.an incredible 18 Paralympic medals, including seven golds. In 2012 Sir
:09:20. > :09:25.Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton and Mark Cavendish will be hoping to
:09:25. > :09:30.add to their medal collections. Cycling events will take place out
:09:30. > :09:39.on the road in the brand new Purpose-built velodrome. There are
:09:39. > :09:44.five track events in which they will compete.
:09:45. > :09:49.For Sarah, cycling wasn't her first sport. Back in 1992 she won
:09:49. > :09:57.Paralympic gold in the swimming pool when she was just 14. She even
:09:57. > :10:02.came to the Blue Peter studios to show us her medals. I did four
:10:02. > :10:08.Paralympic Games as a swimmer and then I started back in the swimming
:10:08. > :10:14.pool but picked up ear infections. While I wasn't allowed to swim, I
:10:14. > :10:18.was using a bike to stay fit. So I was asked by British cycling
:10:18. > :10:27.whether I wanted to pursue it more as a career. I decide today change
:10:28. > :10:32.sports at the end of 2005. It's been brilliant. We are in Majorca,
:10:32. > :10:37.it means we can mix the rides up really well, a flatter ride in the
:10:37. > :10:43.morning and hilly in the afternoon. I love training. I don't know why,
:10:43. > :10:48.I just like going out on long bike rides. I love the whole thing. If I
:10:48. > :10:55.am working on a climb, I will pretend I am race ago competitor.
:10:55. > :11:01.Obviously I always win! Because I was born with my hand the
:11:02. > :11:07.way it is, it is something I have never known any different. There
:11:07. > :11:13.are some adaptations on my bike to help. When you have never known any
:11:13. > :11:23.different it doesn't make your life any harder. Having a home games is
:11:23. > :11:25.
:11:25. > :11:28.the sort of thing every athlete dreams of. What an amazing story.
:11:28. > :11:35.Find out just how difficult that really is a bit later when we try
:11:35. > :11:43.our hand at track cycling in the Blue Peter Olympic tour. Now it's
:11:43. > :11:47.time to meet our second guest. He used to be a blue pretter presenter
:11:47. > :11:57.-- Blue Peter presenter. It's Matt Baker. It's lovely to be home, this
:11:57. > :12:05.is perfect. We used to be -- you used to be a gymnast. Gymnast what
:12:05. > :12:10.type of preparation is involved for commentating. With gymnastics, you
:12:10. > :12:15.haven't got an idea what they are going to cut to, so you have to
:12:15. > :12:21.research every single gymnast on every piece of apparatus. There is
:12:21. > :12:27.an enormous amount of preparation. You have sheets with all the names
:12:27. > :12:31.and everything they have done. you glad to be broadcasting or is
:12:31. > :12:38.there a bit of you that would like to be competing? It was my dream to
:12:38. > :12:42.be at the Olympics, but when my gymnastics came to an end, it is
:12:42. > :12:48.wonderful to be still part of the team. I still feel very much
:12:48. > :12:54.connected to it. Back dem 1967, we are going to go back and look into
:12:54. > :13:04.the past and see how the Olympics has changed. We are going to check
:13:04. > :13:04.
:13:04. > :13:09.out a Romanian gymnast who changed the world. 19676, Canada held the
:13:09. > :13:12.summer Olympic Games in Montreal. There were a few problems. The
:13:12. > :13:16.builders who were working on getting the stadium ready went on
:13:16. > :13:24.strike for over 100 days and it meant the stadium was never fully
:13:24. > :13:28.finished. Regardless of that, its Games did start on time. And the
:13:28. > :13:32.Queen was there to help get things under way, but she wasn't just
:13:32. > :13:36.there on official business, but also to support her daughter Ann,
:13:37. > :13:43.the Princess Royal, who was spetting in the -- competing in the
:13:43. > :13:48.British eventing team. The stand out performance from the
:13:48. > :13:52.1976 games came from a 14-year-old Romanian gymnast by the name of
:13:52. > :13:56.Nadia Comeneci. It was her first Olympic Games and the world didn't
:13:56. > :14:01.know what to expect from such a young girl.
:14:01. > :14:06.Nadia performed perfect routines across the sport and scored an
:14:06. > :14:11.amazing perfect ten, which had never been done before. It was so
:14:11. > :14:18.unexpected, score board couldn't display it properly.
:14:18. > :14:28.Nadia performed a remarkable seven perfect 10s and took home three
:14:28. > :14:31.
:14:31. > :14:34.Gold Medals. Unbelievable at that age. Would she
:14:34. > :14:37.still win gold now. It is interesting, because with that
:14:37. > :14:40.performance with that routine the answer would be no, because
:14:40. > :14:46.nowadays there are two different scores, difficulty and excuse, so
:14:46. > :14:52.you need your perfect ten but you have to risk it now. It is such a
:14:53. > :14:58.great spectator sport these days. Here is still what is to come on
:14:58. > :15:03.today's show. We will be premiering the Horrible
:15:03. > :15:10.Histories Olympic song. We will see which one of us will
:15:10. > :15:17.record the fassest lap of the velodrome in our Celebrity Olympic
:15:17. > :15:20.Challenge. It really is all about testing your
:15:20. > :15:26.strength, testing character but now we are going to test how strong
:15:26. > :15:36.people's arms are. Matt Baker and Joe McElderry, you are going to
:15:36. > :15:39.
:15:39. > :15:44.face the biggest challenge yet. Steve Redgrave got right to the top.
:15:44. > :15:54.Nicky Byrne got to the top. So guys it is open to you. Joe you are up
:15:54. > :15:59.
:15:59. > :16:09.first. Three, two, one.
:16:09. > :16:10.
:16:10. > :16:20.That was good, 80. Mr Baker, your turn.
:16:20. > :16:24.
:16:24. > :16:34.BELL RINGS Joe, you are just under 80.
:16:34. > :16:35.
:16:35. > :16:39.proud of that! It's time to celebrate, the
:16:39. > :16:49.Olympics is about getting everyone together. You are in for a
:16:49. > :17:07.
:17:07. > :17:15.treatment now, it is Horrible # 776 BC Olympics was begun
:17:15. > :17:25.# Hour gamesman truce was called in war but wrestling was so violent

:20:11. > :20:16.singing all week. We are lucky enough to be joined by
:20:16. > :20:19.two of the guys from the Horrible Histories gang. We will be doing
:20:19. > :20:22.Horrible Histories live and in the show you will be able to do the
:20:22. > :20:30.song live as well. Anybody who is in the area and wants to come down
:20:30. > :20:35.and join us, please do. Does everybody get a toga as well?
:20:35. > :20:38.sure we can find a spare one. don't need a ticket, it is a free
:20:38. > :20:41.event, Herrington Country Park and you can sing Flame.
:20:41. > :20:47.Seeing the guys dressed in these, it must have been difficult to
:20:47. > :20:53.compete dressed like that. We found it tough enough wearing what we
:20:53. > :20:56.were wearing. Let's go over and find out what is
:20:56. > :21:01.happening in the Blue Peter Olympic Challenge.
:21:01. > :21:05.This is where Helen and Barney invite four celebrity friends to
:21:05. > :21:09.compete in nine events. At the end, we will have our own special podium.
:21:09. > :21:14.Only one person can go home with the very special Blue Peter Gold
:21:14. > :21:24.Medal. Time to get on their bikes. Here
:21:24. > :21:37.
:21:37. > :21:43.How are you all feeling? Delighted to be here. This is going to be
:21:43. > :21:47.intense. This is track cycling. Another technical event. We have
:21:47. > :21:53.somebody here who is going to help you through, coach Nicola Anderson.
:21:53. > :21:58.The bikes you are going to use have a fixed gear and no breaks, so you
:21:58. > :22:03.can't stop pedalling. You have to master the track, also. Nicola is
:22:03. > :22:07.your master today. You will be pleased to hear we have Lucy, a
:22:07. > :22:10.junior world champion, to show you how it is done.
:22:10. > :22:17.This time trial challenge will see our women, then the men, ride one
:22:17. > :22:24.lap of the velodrome on their own. The fastest lap wins. The quickest
:22:24. > :22:28.way around is to follow the black line.
:22:28. > :22:37.The athletes soon find out that riding at a sharp angle is
:22:37. > :22:42.different to a normal road. feels slippy. I have no brakes, no
:22:42. > :22:47.safety net. When you go into the corner, your instinct is to turn in
:22:47. > :22:53.but you have to keep going straight and then you will turn with the
:22:53. > :23:03.shape of the velodrome. Adele is refusing to lead. It is not just
:23:03. > :23:06.
:23:06. > :23:14.adeal who is struggling. I wanted to remind Romeo of his song 21
:23:14. > :23:23.Seconds To Go! You've got 21 seconds to go. If I
:23:23. > :23:30.make it in 21 seconds that would be a miracle.
:23:30. > :23:38.Does everybody feel they know what they are doing? Yes.
:23:38. > :23:48.Helen, you came out first, take to the track please.
:23:48. > :23:51.
:23:51. > :24:01.Helen has had a chance to build up That black line is is the quickest
:24:01. > :24:10.
:24:10. > :24:20.That's the time to beat. Adele now, she looked wobbly in
:24:20. > :24:34.
:24:34. > :24:38.practise. I think the smile is one of relief!
:24:38. > :24:48.It's all down to singing sensation Laura.
:24:48. > :25:12.
:25:12. > :25:16.This is a good run! For me, my favourite event so far,
:25:16. > :25:20.once you have got over the fear of going round the corner, it was
:25:20. > :25:30.really good fun to go as fast as you can. You have completed the
:25:30. > :25:44.
:25:44. > :25:54.challenge. Down to the men now. He's building up a good time and
:25:54. > :25:56.
:25:56. > :26:06.speed. That's just over our target time of
:26:06. > :26:07.
:26:07. > :26:17.A chance for Barney. Slightly slower over the line after
:26:17. > :26:38.
:26:38. > :26:48.Look at Brendan's start, you can tell this is a man on a mission.
:26:48. > :27:02.
:27:02. > :27:07.You can see the concentration. He's taken first place, Romeo in
:27:07. > :27:11.silver and Barney third. It was all about pace. I pushed it
:27:11. > :27:16.hard. I am happy with the time lap I did. It was a very exciting thing
:27:16. > :27:22.to do. I know you are desperate to have another go, but it is becoming
:27:22. > :27:28.familiar familiar the three points go to Laura and Brendan.
:27:28. > :27:35.I have to say, that felt so much faster than it looks on the TV.
:27:35. > :27:42.Myself, Helen and Adele aren't in any medal-winning position. We are
:27:42. > :27:48.We are supposed to be sporting. bronze position Romeo has nine
:27:48. > :27:54.points. Silver Laura with ten and Brendan is in gold position with 11
:27:54. > :27:59.points. It's still is early days, things
:28:00. > :28:04.could change. Mr Baker, you were laughing a lot during that film.
:28:04. > :28:11.Brendan. The intensity there, but I know Brendan through Strictly, but
:28:11. > :28:17.can you put your money on him in the long haul? I wouldn't if I were
:28:17. > :28:22.you. We know what happens. Joe would you fancy giving that a go.
:28:22. > :28:29.would love to do the diving. Diving is still to come and that is a good
:28:29. > :28:39.one, because people do get turt, there is a mini tantrum!
:28:39. > :28:40.
:28:40. > :28:42.We are back on the CBBC channel at 5.45. Then 9.00 on Saturday
:28:42. > :28:47.mornings Blue Peter's Big Olympic Tour continues.
:28:47. > :28:57.We are going to be in Burnley. Make sure you are watching. Still
:28:57. > :28:58.
:28:58. > :28:59.to come on next week's show: We will be joined by star of BBC
:28:59. > :29:04.drama Waterloo Road Lucien Laviscount.
:29:04. > :29:12.And you can see the next round of our Olympic challenge. We have
:29:12. > :29:20.glowing jackets and we will be doing something scary on a BMX.
:29:20. > :29:24.We look at how the medals are being made.
:29:24. > :29:29.Myself, Barney and Joe will be stick around here all day, so if
