:00:33. > :00:44.BMX is where I started. It is how I made my name. It is where I came

:00:45. > :00:48.back to. Columbia, BMX is big here. Medellin is home to the current

:00:49. > :00:53.Olympic champion and queen of BMX, Mariana Pajon, the track here is

:00:54. > :00:57.even named after her. The Colombians know their stuff and they are hugely

:00:58. > :01:05.passionate and out in force to have the best riders roll into town.

:01:06. > :01:10.Hello and welcome to the highlights of the 2016 BMX World Championships.

:01:11. > :01:14.The riders might be out in the sunny climes of Medellin in Colombia,

:01:15. > :01:18.South America. We are here on the edge of our saddles at the National

:01:19. > :01:23.cycling Centre in Manchester. Joining me providing expert insight

:01:24. > :01:30.is the six time Olympic champions Sir Chris Hoy and Sinead is read.

:01:31. > :01:35.You made the jump from track to BMX, is there a bit of you that wishes

:01:36. > :01:40.you were still at it? Having done BMX for so many years, I always have

:01:41. > :01:46.that thing inside me that wants to get back on the starting gate. I am

:01:47. > :01:53.happy to be sitting here watching. Chris, you actually started out in

:01:54. > :01:58.BMX. I raced at the BMX World Championships 30 years ago, in

:01:59. > :02:03.Slough, 1986 and 1987 in Orlando. Before you were born. So it has

:02:04. > :02:09.changed a lot in the last 30 years, the tracks have got bigger and

:02:10. > :02:13.faster. It is so spectacular now but I am happy to be on the sidelines

:02:14. > :02:17.watching. One of the big favourites going into the main event meant a

:02:18. > :02:22.lot of home interest. Liam Phillips has been the overall Supercross

:02:23. > :02:27.world champion for the last couple of years and the 2013 BMX world

:02:28. > :02:28.champion. Getting his hands on the rainbow jersey is top of his

:02:29. > :02:45.priority list. How is your form at the moment? I am

:02:46. > :02:48.going really good. Probably better than good. I have only raced twice

:02:49. > :02:54.this year and that was always the plan. It was not going to be a

:02:55. > :02:58.short, sharp season but the racing has been done over the last few

:02:59. > :03:03.years. I am never satisfied and I am happy overall but I want to push

:03:04. > :03:08.that level on again. I want to produce good starts and get on the

:03:09. > :03:13.flight full of confidence. How well do you know the track in Colombia? A

:03:14. > :03:22.great track, really technical and long. It is altitude, not massive

:03:23. > :03:27.altitude, 1600 metres I think. It will be a physical day. I think it

:03:28. > :03:30.will be about getting into the last eight and being in the best shape

:03:31. > :03:35.possible so you can produce your best ride when you need to. When you

:03:36. > :03:43.do that, the chances of being successful are high. Colombia is a

:03:44. > :03:47.country, Mariana Pajon is the Olympic champion from London, she is

:03:48. > :03:52.an absolute queen in Colombia. Again, you put all of that together

:03:53. > :03:57.and we will have a World Championships to remember. Everyone

:03:58. > :04:03.who has experienced racing in South America thinks it is fantastic. We

:04:04. > :04:07.have been to Argentina the last four years on the World Tour. It is

:04:08. > :04:15.always a stop that is the most memorable every year. We go to this

:04:16. > :04:18.tiny little town in northern Argentina and the kids grow up with

:04:19. > :04:23.absolutely nothing and for a world-class event to come to the

:04:24. > :04:27.city every year is the highlight of the year. I leave that race with

:04:28. > :04:33.nothing every year, I give away crash helmets and goggles. I give

:04:34. > :04:40.away everything. These kids love it. So to race in Colombia in the world

:04:41. > :04:44.champion ships will be special. How important is the rainbow jersey? For

:04:45. > :04:49.me personally, it is the greatest honour in cycling. It is something I

:04:50. > :04:54.looked to achieve throughout my career. In my first World

:04:55. > :04:59.Championships, that was 1996 as a six or seven-year-old boy. That is

:05:00. > :05:04.when the rainbow jersey was first awarded to BMX. I have grown up with

:05:05. > :05:08.that rainbow jersey being awarded to the best riders every year and it is

:05:09. > :05:13.something I have strived to achieve. To wear the jersey for 12 months was

:05:14. > :05:21.the biggest honour and highlight of my career so far. It is something I

:05:22. > :05:26.love to race for. How does it compare winning the rainbow jersey

:05:27. > :05:32.or the World Cup? It is difficult. In football, the rainbow jersey is

:05:33. > :05:35.like the FA Cup, performing on one given day. Whoever performs on that

:05:36. > :05:40.date gets the honour to wear that jersey. The World Cup is like the

:05:41. > :05:45.premiership, it takes consistency over five different stops. I have

:05:46. > :05:49.been really pleased with how I have been able to back the World Cup in

:05:50. > :05:55.the last couple of years. I was third in 2013 and won the series in

:05:56. > :05:58.2014 and 15. To have that and a level of consistency I have had in

:05:59. > :06:04.the last few years has been something that doesn't happen

:06:05. > :06:09.overnight. It is something I have achieved and am proud of. Not

:06:10. > :06:14.immediately on your calendar but the Olympics gold medal, what would it

:06:15. > :06:18.mean? It would be extremely satisfying. It is something I have

:06:19. > :06:24.worked towards. It is the ultimate goal at the end of the day. I am not

:06:25. > :06:29.dreaming about it now, I am putting the foundations in place to make it

:06:30. > :06:35.happen. It would be massively satisfying on a personal level but

:06:36. > :06:42.nationally, as a sport in the UK, it would be huge. It would turn the

:06:43. > :06:50.sport to the next level. That is something that would mean a lot to

:06:51. > :06:55.me. He looks on fine form, you know him well, how confident will he be

:06:56. > :07:01.going to this World Championships? Looking at him in the gym and on the

:07:02. > :07:05.track in Manchester prior to the World Championships, he will feel

:07:06. > :07:10.confident. He is probably the best in the world from the start so I

:07:11. > :07:14.think he will be confident. The World Championships is one of the

:07:15. > :07:18.big things in cycling but with the big O looming over the corner and a

:07:19. > :07:26.man who has been in both, will he be distracted by Rio? Everyone is

:07:27. > :07:30.talking about Rio but this is still a World Championships. The chance to

:07:31. > :07:34.win a rainbow jersey means a lot to every rider. The Olympics are on the

:07:35. > :07:40.horizon but they won't be thinking of that when they line up at the

:07:41. > :07:44.start gate. We are about to see the action in BMX is incredible. The

:07:45. > :07:50.margin for error in so small. It is a battle out the. They are guys

:07:51. > :07:57.racing from six and seven and now they are raising later. Why is there

:07:58. > :08:03.such love between the riders? If all we were in the Olympics, it was more

:08:04. > :08:07.of a laid-back sport. You can become friends and travel on the circuit

:08:08. > :08:11.all the time. People in America training and working with each

:08:12. > :08:15.other. You develop a friendship and we are always travelling. Come the

:08:16. > :08:21.Olympics, it didn't change that. People are still friends off the

:08:22. > :08:27.track, not to much on the track. That is why the relationships keep

:08:28. > :08:30.going. We do have a man on the ground in Colombia, a former BMX

:08:31. > :08:35.world champion and Chris's partner from the team spent in Beijing that

:08:36. > :08:41.won gold. He is now the wee extra rector for USA cycling, Jamie staff,

:08:42. > :08:47.here is his insight into the events coming up. The last big race of 2016

:08:48. > :08:51.in the BMX Callander. A lot of riders trying to gain a spot in the

:08:52. > :08:56.Olympics in a few months. Some of the big riders to look out for our

:08:57. > :09:00.Caroline Buchanan from Australia. She has been on the podium at every

:09:01. > :09:05.single World Cup event. Alise Post has looked great all season but has

:09:06. > :09:10.not been able to put it together and get on the podium. She is still

:09:11. > :09:14.definitely one to watch. And of course, Mariana Pajon, the current

:09:15. > :09:20.Olympic champion in her hometown. In front of her home crowd. For the

:09:21. > :09:23.men, Sam Willoughby from Australia. Another great contender and

:09:24. > :09:27.consistent athlete. He lost the World Championships. We have Maris

:09:28. > :09:33.Strombergs, twice an Olympic champion and he won just two weeks

:09:34. > :09:36.ago in Holland. We also have Liam Phillips Great Britain trying to get

:09:37. > :09:41.another world title. He did not get it last year but made the final. He

:09:42. > :09:47.will try and get that jersey again this year as he heads to Rio in

:09:48. > :09:52.2016. Great to have some local knowledge, what can we expect from

:09:53. > :09:57.the track? It is really technical. Out of all the B extracts I have

:09:58. > :10:02.been to, it is the most technical. It is a long course and is

:10:03. > :10:06.challenging. Big jumps and super technical rhythm sections so it will

:10:07. > :10:11.be a real challenge for the riders. Does it favour the Colombians

:10:12. > :10:15.because they can train on it all? Definitely, any home advantage, like

:10:16. > :10:20.when we race in Manchester, it benefits you so much more. They will

:10:21. > :10:30.have that home advantage. How much will altitude play a part? They are

:10:31. > :10:34.at 1500 metres, not high altitude but you notice it. You feel out of

:10:35. > :10:38.bread going upstairs. But for repeated effort by the time you get

:10:39. > :10:43.to the final and the start gate, they will be feeling it in the legs.

:10:44. > :10:48.Even factors like the extra speed, a little bit faster. Trying to adjust

:10:49. > :10:51.how far they are jumping, possibly overshooting the jumps. It is a

:10:52. > :10:55.different thing they have to consider when racing out there. We

:10:56. > :11:01.also saw the weather play havoc. It is not indoors like in Manchester.

:11:02. > :11:06.We saw it last year in Belgium. It is a big factor. You cannot plan

:11:07. > :11:11.your warm up warrant badly when you will race if the weather delays the

:11:12. > :11:15.action. The wind, will that affect things? Piller radius, particularly

:11:16. > :11:18.with the size of the jumps, you have to be so precise way you land. A

:11:19. > :11:24.little gust of wind midway through the jump, there is not much you can

:11:25. > :11:28.do about it. It does mean extra variables compared to an indoor

:11:29. > :11:32.circuit like this. Riders start on the eight metre hill and then

:11:33. > :11:35.immediately faced a huge triple which gives them plenty of speed

:11:36. > :11:41.through the next set of jumps and into the first burn. The course then

:11:42. > :11:45.splits, the women taking the right-hand side and the men on the

:11:46. > :11:49.more tricky left root. This technical and long track was built

:11:50. > :11:53.especially for these championships. Wet weather would make all of the

:11:54. > :11:58.Burns here hazardous. With them is the riders best friend on the third

:11:59. > :12:03.straight. All about maintaining speed. By the third burn, or things

:12:04. > :12:12.will be on the line. Keeping rhythm through the final set of swoops

:12:13. > :12:16.before the big finish. Time to get into the action as we pick up the

:12:17. > :12:18.first of the women's quarterfinals and Chris will be joining Simon

:12:19. > :12:29.Brotherton in the commentary box. This is the women's elite

:12:30. > :12:38.quarterfinals. Caroline Buchanan nearest the camera. An early fall.

:12:39. > :12:46.Buchanan leading the way. Right on her wheel is Poitier of France.

:12:47. > :12:50.Then, Bonder Rincon of Russia. Buchanan of Australia still leading

:12:51. > :12:53.the way. The Russian trying to close the gap. Those three with an

:12:54. > :13:00.advantage over the rest of the field. Not sure who the fall was. It

:13:01. > :13:07.happened so quickly right at the start of the race. Buchanan looking

:13:08. > :13:09.good, as expected, looking to the add to the world title she has

:13:10. > :13:28.already won in Medellin. Those of the first four riders over

:13:29. > :13:33.the line. Heat two and Merel Smulders, Laura smoulders and the

:13:34. > :13:42.Olympic champion as well. And Fernandez of Valens whaler. --

:13:43. > :13:47.Venezuela. Almost as soon as the race has started, Stephanie

:13:48. > :13:55.Hernandez of Venezuela finds herself at the front with Melinda MacLeod of

:13:56. > :13:58.Australia in second place. Real drama in this women's quarterfinal.

:13:59. > :14:05.The other rider trying to come through is a Valentino of France she

:14:06. > :14:09.is in third the moment. Hernandez of Venezuela taking it relatively easy

:14:10. > :14:15.here. Just trying to get through and stay at the front. But possibly

:14:16. > :14:20.conserving energy if she can. Hernandez looking good, untroubled

:14:21. > :14:29.and unruffled and chased all the way over the line. The Dutch rider

:14:30. > :14:34.rescues the situation for her country by a certain extent by

:14:35. > :14:37.crossing the line in the first four. But Laura smoulders of the

:14:38. > :14:47.Netherlands was on the deck very early here. Mariana Pajon is in this

:14:48. > :14:57.next heat, nearest the camera. The big local favourite.

:14:58. > :15:04.Belgium and the United States in this one as well. Leading the way

:15:05. > :15:13.into the first right-hander, Pajon at the front. Judy Baauw of the

:15:14. > :15:28.Netherlands in second. Looking good for the quarterfinals. Judy from the

:15:29. > :15:34.Netherlands, and the Australian, Kirsten Dellar is in fourth place.

:15:35. > :15:46.The crowd getting what they came to see in the quarterfinal with Agen

:15:47. > :15:53.safely through. Vanhoof of Belgium edged out, not finishing in the top

:15:54. > :16:00.four. Alise Post finished fourth in the Time trial yesterday. Alise Post

:16:01. > :16:11.and Reynolds, the two closest to the camera. We have a faller, it it was

:16:12. > :16:16.the Czech Republic rider. Same spot as Smulders in the last race. Alise

:16:17. > :16:25.Post has got some daylight. Being chased by Reynolds of Australia. The

:16:26. > :16:29.Brazilian is in third at the moment. The Colombian challenging in the top

:16:30. > :16:36.four. She should be just behind the Brazilian. At the front of the race,

:16:37. > :16:41.Lauren Reynolds and Alise Post will qualify, if they can just get over

:16:42. > :16:48.the last few lumps and bumps. Open towards the line. The Colombian

:16:49. > :16:52.rider gets through in fourth. Two South Americans through, Brazil and

:16:53. > :17:06.Colombia. There are in happy there. Absolutely. -- very happy there.

:17:07. > :17:18.The quarterfinals underway, heat one. Niek Kimmann being edged out by

:17:19. > :17:24.the Frenchman into the first corner. Everybody is round safely. Jores

:17:25. > :17:36.Okore is leading. Niek Kimmann in second. -- jobless

:17:37. > :17:41.Daudet with a clear run. You could pick his line at the front. Not

:17:42. > :17:47.under any pressure. You will not feel them breathing down his neck as

:17:48. > :17:49.he comes into the finish. Niek Kimmann, the defending world

:17:50. > :17:56.champion, safely over the line in second.

:17:57. > :18:04.Britain's second representative is Kyle Evans, producing a stunning

:18:05. > :18:10.display in Manchester last month to get his first ever world podium,

:18:11. > :18:15.behind Liam Phillips. I caught up with him before he left for

:18:16. > :18:24.Colombia. BMX wasn't my original sport. I did BMX from a young -- did

:18:25. > :18:27.motocross from a young age. I found BMX and it was pretty much exactly

:18:28. > :18:33.like motocross but without the engine. Your legs the engine. For me

:18:34. > :18:39.it was an easy and quick transfer over. I loved it from the moment I

:18:40. > :18:44.started. We are a close team, spending a lot of time together,

:18:45. > :18:49.training in the gym and on the track. We spent time together away

:18:50. > :18:54.from the facility, we meet up for food and copy and things like that.

:18:55. > :19:00.It's superb. I think it has shown over the last few years how

:19:01. > :19:05.brilliant the programme has been. For me to be chasing Liam down and

:19:06. > :19:09.wanting to snap at his heels, I guess it's almost invaluable. I'm

:19:10. > :19:17.very confident. I never going to a race expecting a specific result,

:19:18. > :19:21.but I always go there with my head screwed on, thinking that I will

:19:22. > :19:27.give it my all and do my best and what will be, will be. That proved

:19:28. > :19:31.in Manchester. If I do go out and do my best I'm capable of the podium. I

:19:32. > :19:39.googled the word Championships, keep my head down and hopefully put in a

:19:40. > :19:45.result like I did in Manchester. -- I go to the World Championships.

:19:46. > :19:51.COMMENTATOR: Heat two includes Kyle Evans of Great Britain. He's really

:19:52. > :19:56.stepped up this season, taking it to a new level. It would be a big

:19:57. > :19:59.challenge for him to make it to the semifinal but it's definitely

:20:00. > :20:05.possible. He is on the outside, you don't want to be stuck there,

:20:06. > :20:15.ideally in the middle or insight. Sam Willoughby in green in the

:20:16. > :20:21.middle. From Australia. Willoughby goals to the front straightaway.

:20:22. > :20:25.Cameron of New Zealand is right behind him. Everybody still upright,

:20:26. > :20:32.good to see. Willoughby leading the way. Cameron in second. Torres of

:20:33. > :20:38.Argentina almost nudges him to the outside of the track. Torres putting

:20:39. > :20:43.him under real pressure. The Latvian also going well here. Willoughby

:20:44. > :20:49.leading the way with Cameron in second. The Latvian rider up to

:20:50. > :20:58.third. He has finished third and a battle for fourth, it might be the

:20:59. > :21:03.Swiss rider, Blanc, finishing fourth. Kyle Evans finishes seventh,

:21:04. > :21:07.knocked out in the quarterfinals. Tough for Kyle Evans, but Willoughby

:21:08. > :21:11.is a class act, controlling from the front. You can tell that we are

:21:12. > :21:17.getting closer to the finals and the competition is getting tighter.

:21:18. > :21:26.Strombergs exist nearest the camera in this one. -- Strombergs nearest

:21:27. > :21:33.the camera. He's the big-name rider this heat. The Frenchman up towards

:21:34. > :21:40.the front. We have had a faller. Strombergs still leading the way.

:21:41. > :21:48.Strombergs is the double Olympic champion, being followed by the

:21:49. > :21:56.United States rider. Ramirez of Colombia pushing hard as well. The

:21:57. > :22:01.Frenchman in third. Here comes Strombergs, leading the way from

:22:02. > :22:05.start to finish. Good ride from him. Corben Sharrah of the US is the

:22:06. > :22:19.route. Ramirez from Colombia and the Frenchman in fourth. Rang --

:22:20. > :22:23.Rencurel. Anthony Dean was seventh recently in the Supercross. He was

:22:24. > :22:28.eighth in last year's World Championships final, and in 2014.

:22:29. > :22:33.Looking to improve on that having established himself as a contender

:22:34. > :22:36.in getting into the final. Dean on the outside. In the middle of the

:22:37. > :22:42.field and your picture is Liam Phillips, going well in. Just

:22:43. > :22:45.getting his nose in front. The American rider, Long, is neck and

:22:46. > :22:51.neck. Phillips goes wide but is safely through. Nicholas Long

:22:52. > :22:56.leading away from the United States. Liam Phillips in second place. He is

:22:57. > :23:03.being chased hard by Anthony Dean of Australia. Number 44. Phillips

:23:04. > :23:07.holding onto the second spot. Long leading the way, the American rider,

:23:08. > :23:11.set to finish first in this quarterfinal. Looking good for Liam

:23:12. > :23:16.Phillips as they come to the line. Got closer towards the end than he

:23:17. > :23:21.would have liked. Safely through. That's the name of the game, getting

:23:22. > :23:29.into the top four. Doesn't have to win. British women have so far

:23:30. > :23:33.failed to make a mark on the world stage, but that might be amounted

:23:34. > :23:37.change in the form of 17-year-old Bethany Shriever who competed in the

:23:38. > :23:41.senior event in Manchester last month, narrowly missing out on a

:23:42. > :23:45.finals place. But she impressed the selectors so much she booked herself

:23:46. > :23:52.a ticket to Colombia. I've been doing sport since I was eight years

:23:53. > :23:57.old. I think I'm in my eight year. I got involved with BMX through my

:23:58. > :24:07.brother. And his friend's dad was basically the coach of a local club.

:24:08. > :24:14.He invited us down one evening. We just fell in love with it. Really

:24:15. > :24:17.excited to go to Colombia. It will be my first World Championship race

:24:18. > :24:22.in junior. Something I've never relieved on before. There will be

:24:23. > :24:27.some pressure, but you just have to deal with it, really, and ride. My

:24:28. > :24:32.main aim for these World Championships would be to make the

:25:55. > :26:00.Championship final. Fantastic ride from Bethany. She lined up the ride

:26:01. > :26:08.ahead of her beautifully, dominated the inside line and the race. It was

:26:09. > :26:13.Kate two for Bethany in the final, not the start she was after. Big

:26:19. > :26:24.Thankfully, she was OK, but that was the end of her medal hopes. Nerves

:26:36. > :26:41.enjoyed my time here with British cycling. I look forward to next

:26:42. > :26:47.year's worlds. Keep training. Disappointment personified. She must

:30:06. > :30:12.Valentino of France, Poitier is edged out in fifth place. There is a

:31:50. > :31:56.Pajon is the winner, Hernandez through, the Russian and McLeod,

:31:57. > :32:03.Melinda McLeod going through. It must have been Lauren Reynolds who

:32:04. > :32:08.fell earlier in the race. So much drama in every race, the riders know

:32:09. > :32:14.what is on the line, a place in the world final. The crowd were pleased

:32:15. > :32:21.there. You can see, hit the deck very hard, that is collarbone. So

:32:45. > :32:51.BMX made its Olympic debut in 2008 and Liam Phillips has no doubt of

:33:22. > :33:29.Championships. I now watch the racing and almost a full date of

:33:30. > :33:33.eight. We have champions who are 13, 15-year-old boys. That is the next

:33:34. > :33:42.generation. He is such a good advocate for the sport, do you agree

:33:43. > :33:48.with what he said? Definitely, the X had what we wanted but we always

:34:04. > :34:09.discipline as a sport. You can transfer bike skills to any cycling

:34:10. > :34:12.discipline? It is about learning winning and losing as a kid. You

:34:13. > :34:17.will always have the odd crash, a technically demanding sport. The

:34:25. > :34:30.there are so many sports where men and women have started their career

:34:31. > :34:35.in BMX. You don't have to know the ins and outs, it is first across the

:34:36. > :34:39.line. With the crashes in it as well, it adds to the excitement in

:34:40. > :34:47.it. When people line up, you know it will be action packed. The are not

:34:48. > :34:51.many boring BMX races. It is now on to the men's semifinals, Liam

:34:52. > :34:52.Phillips goes in heat number two. Which is super stat but first, heat

:34:53. > :35:05.one. The line-up for the first semifinal,

:35:06. > :35:12.Joris Daudet in the light blue bottoms. Away they go. Long is the

:35:13. > :35:16.American in the light trousers as well. Joris Daudet has looked smooth

:35:17. > :35:21.in this series of races so far. He takes control for the time being.

:35:22. > :35:29.Chased hard by Van Ghent of the Netherlands. Long is challenging the

:35:30. > :35:34.third place now. But Ramirez of Colombia is holding third place at

:35:35. > :35:37.the moment. And it looks as though he will be heading for the final.

:35:38. > :35:44.Joris Daudet looking really good here. He will be safely through, so

:35:45. > :35:48.smooth and fast. Joris Daudet leads over the line. Great celebrations

:35:49. > :35:55.for the Colombians, they have a rider in the final. Long is also

:35:56. > :36:02.through. A tough one for Shara from the USA, crashed I understand. They

:36:03. > :36:08.said he needed to beat Nic Long to get the Olympic place. He

:36:09. > :36:16.potentially could be off that possibility now. Joris Daudet look

:36:17. > :36:25.impressive, so smooth. A very tall rider as well. Managed through the

:36:26. > :36:35.jumps really nicely. There we are, Joris Daudet, Ramirez.

:36:36. > :36:47.A tough one for Phillips, needs to be on his game here to make it into

:36:48. > :36:51.the final. Men's semifinal, the first four riders through. Can Liam

:36:52. > :36:56.Phillips get through here in the first four and race the gold later

:36:57. > :37:00.on. Phillips in the middle of the picture, third at the moment. The

:37:01. > :37:07.world champion. Nick Kamen at the front being challenged. And it is

:37:08. > :37:12.the Frenchmen going well at the moment. Liam Phillips back in fifth

:37:13. > :37:16.place at the moment, he has ground to make up. Edging up towards fourth

:37:17. > :37:25.at the moment. We will keep a close eye on it. Nicky Mellon, he is

:37:26. > :37:32.leading the way. The Frenchman has had a good race. It will be tight

:37:33. > :37:38.for Liam Phillips, has he made it. Liam Phillips has been edged out,

:37:39. > :37:42.finishing in fifth place. It was desperately close at the end. Liam

:37:43. > :37:45.Phillips was in contention for a place in the final all the way

:37:46. > :37:52.through. He got away from the gate well. Yes, just a little bit boxed

:37:53. > :37:58.here went from third into fourth and eventually fifth at the end of this

:37:59. > :38:03.corner. He lost a bit of momentum over this next straight. If you

:38:04. > :38:10.watch the Latvian rider, he comes through with a late charge. So tight

:38:11. > :38:14.at the top but Liam Williams very disappointed. As much as it is about

:38:15. > :38:20.the World Championship, he will be looking forward to Rio.

:38:21. > :38:23.Disappointment for Liam Phillips, who was aiming to become the world

:38:24. > :38:27.champion for the second time in his career. He will have to wait for

:38:28. > :38:31.another day. Reid I don't know anyone else you could have chucked

:38:32. > :38:35.in to make it more difficult. Every race at the world chanting chips is

:38:36. > :38:40.tough and I knew that from the start. I had a great start in the

:38:41. > :38:45.first race and I made a really small mistake coming out of the second

:38:46. > :38:49.corner. That knocked my track speed down and I didn't qualify with a

:38:50. > :38:53.great time and had an outside lane. All of these things add on to each

:38:54. > :38:58.other and in a World Championships, you can't afford for that to happen.

:38:59. > :39:02.I put myself in the mix in that semi-but there were some of the best

:39:03. > :39:09.guys in the world on the inside. Just wasn't meant to be. I could

:39:10. > :39:13.perhaps have ridden the race differently. Sam made a few mistakes

:39:14. > :39:20.in fourth and I was in fifth, I could have been more patient but

:39:21. > :39:25.yes, it is important to be how the and it has been a great race but not

:39:26. > :39:31.the result I came here for but I can take positives from it. You pretty

:39:32. > :39:35.much qualified for Rio, earning your spot, does that remove a bit of

:39:36. > :39:41.pressure for this World Championships? You were just after

:39:42. > :39:47.the rainbow jersey? Won yes, again, it is a difficult one. I am

:39:48. > :39:52.prequalified but it is a World Championships and a rainbow jersey

:39:53. > :39:55.on the line. I am not going to think that the World Championships would

:39:56. > :40:00.be secondary to the Olympics, I came here to do the best I can. I wanted

:40:01. > :40:04.to race hard and if I had picked up an injury and not been able to

:40:05. > :40:09.compete at the Olympics, I was willing to take that risk.

:40:10. > :40:14.Thankfully that hasn't happened. There are certainly different parts

:40:15. > :40:19.of my race that I want to improve going into Rio. You have learned a

:40:20. > :40:23.lot coming here about South America, totally different to Europe, as we

:40:24. > :40:31.know. Is there anything you have picked up you can apply to Rio? For

:40:32. > :40:35.me, I have won some big races and I feel comfortable that I will be able

:40:36. > :40:41.to execute that. But every race, you cannot just lead from the front. For

:40:42. > :40:46.me, doing some really big races behind riders and in traffic and

:40:47. > :40:52.riding smart and not just being a time trialist on your own. That is a

:40:53. > :40:56.difficult one, I don't come to the World Championships for experience

:40:57. > :41:03.but at the same time, there is a limited amount of exposure to races

:41:04. > :41:09.like that. Unfortunately, it was some exposure to being behind guys

:41:10. > :41:15.but there are some positives. Overall, I am bitterly disappointed

:41:16. > :41:19.because I came here to try and win another rainbow jersey. Liam

:41:20. > :41:25.understandably disappointed but look at that heat. Maris Strombergs was

:41:26. > :41:30.in that heat. Sam Willoughby, all going out. It was a big surprise,

:41:31. > :41:38.all of the big names you expected to be in the final didn't make it

:41:39. > :41:42.through. But that is BMX. It is unexpected. They say that, Liam will

:41:43. > :41:49.be disappointed but at the end, he is already looking forward to the

:41:50. > :41:53.Olympics? In BMX, you need a short-term memory, after that race,

:41:54. > :41:58.you have to be moving onto the next one. If you dwell on the pass, it

:41:59. > :42:02.will carry on and you don't want the disappointment ahead of the Olympic

:42:03. > :42:08.Games. You have to train hard and get ready for the Olympics. We saw

:42:09. > :42:12.in 2012, he crashed in the world chanting chips in Birmingham and

:42:13. > :42:15.went to the Olympics. He has not crashed here but not the best

:42:16. > :42:21.preparation come will that play on his mind? With what he was saying

:42:22. > :42:26.about the race, he has gained a lot of experience in taking positives

:42:27. > :42:30.from the World Championships. He was riding from behind and he is not

:42:31. > :42:35.used that. If he can work on that kind of thing in his training, it

:42:36. > :42:39.can be a good thing going into the games. World Championships aside,

:42:40. > :42:44.Rio just around the corner and again, Liam will be one of the

:42:45. > :42:47.favourites? He is, it is about getting it right on the day, he can

:42:48. > :42:52.beat anyone in the world when he is in the right state of mind, it is

:42:53. > :42:55.that one chance, the one shot. If he gets it right, there are all the

:42:56. > :43:04.chances in the world that he can be Olympic champion. How did you get

:43:05. > :43:11.into riding BMX? Reid I was watching it and I thought I could do it so I

:43:12. > :43:18.tried it and I have been doing it for four years. How old were you

:43:19. > :43:24.when you started? Five. John, forgive me for saying this but you

:43:25. > :43:28.are close to 50 years of age, not the kind of sport that a normal

:43:29. > :43:37.50-year-old would take up? It is not. I got cold and fed up watching

:43:38. > :43:41.my son so I decided to do some training myself. What an amazing

:43:42. > :43:49.sport that riders as young as nine up to 49 can ride on the same track?

:43:50. > :43:54.Yes, it is a sport that does not differentiate between age or ability

:43:55. > :44:00.or money or anything like that. It is therefore everybody to have a go

:44:01. > :44:03.and enjoy. If you were to say something tickets back home, how

:44:04. > :44:10.would you inspire them to get into it? Because it is a good sport and

:44:11. > :44:14.you get stronger and fitter. Young Liam will be hoping to emulate these

:44:15. > :44:19.guys in the future, it is final showdown time for the men, who will

:44:20. > :44:29.be crowned the 2016 BMX world champion? COMMENTATOR: The men's

:46:46. > :46:51.United States takes the bronze. Rencurel of France is pushed down

:46:52. > :46:57.into fourth. That was spectacular. Daudet was flawless. Niek Kimmann

:46:58. > :47:00.pushed him all the way to the line. Awesome display of control. Daudet

:47:01. > :47:07.just seems to be at one with the bike and track, accelerating before

:47:08. > :47:12.he hit the deck. Daudet is by far the most experienced of the two. I

:47:13. > :47:15.think they are keen to put Niek Kimmann under pressure early in the

:47:16. > :47:19.race and give him something to think about. Daudet needed a clean start

:47:20. > :47:25.because he was in lane one and could have been boxed in. It wasn't enough

:47:26. > :47:31.for Niek Kimmann, the French take the gold medal. He has looked the

:47:32. > :47:40.best rider throughout the series of races. Niek Kimmann was superb as

:47:41. > :47:45.well, but we mentioned before how well Daudet was riding. Confirmation

:47:46. > :47:50.of the new world champion, Daudet. Niek Kimmann has silver to go with

:47:51. > :47:54.the gold of 24 hours ago. Nicholas Long of the United States finishing

:48:04. > :48:09.long and I'm happy to have the title tonight and wear the jersey. I felt

:48:10. > :48:14.I was getting better all day, but in the final I was next to Daudet who

:48:15. > :48:19.had the inside. He was making mistakes, normally I might have

:48:20. > :48:24.passed him, but too tough days like this, it was too bad and I had to

:48:25. > :48:27.settle for second. What a race. We saw you write down predictions

:48:28. > :48:32.before the final and you got it right. Daudet looked impressive

:48:33. > :48:37.through all the rides, the time trials, the heats, quarters and

:48:38. > :48:40.semis. So smooth. Niek Kimmann was unlucky, but both of them were head

:48:41. > :48:45.and shoulders above the rest. I wrote them my piece of paper, one

:48:46. > :48:51.and two. I didn't write down third. Niek Kimmann has kind of from

:48:52. > :48:57.nowhere. Three years ago he came here as a junior and didn't even

:48:58. > :49:03.make it out of the local nationals or the motos. Now a double world

:49:04. > :49:10.champion in three years. It's great to see. Onto the women's final. It

:49:11. > :49:13.promises to be a cracker. Can local girl Pajon regain her crown as Queen

:49:14. > :49:26.of BMX on the track that bears her name is to mark -- bears her name?

:49:27. > :49:38.COMMENTATOR: McLeod through to the final. 2011 double world junior

:49:39. > :49:47.champion. Valentino was third recently in pattern Dahl. He World

:49:48. > :49:50.Championship bronze in 2013. Bondarenko, fourth in the world

:49:51. > :49:55.Junior Championships a couple of years ago. Can she make the big step

:49:56. > :50:03.up? Defending world champion Stephanie Hernandez of Venezuela.

:50:04. > :50:10.Seventh in Manchester last month. Caroline Buchanan aiming to be

:50:11. > :50:22.double world champion in 2016. The local favourite, on her own track,

:50:23. > :50:27.the Olympic champion. Alise Post, world silver medallist a couple of

:50:28. > :50:35.years ago. Her form is good. Fourth in Manchester, 12 recently as well.

:50:36. > :50:44.Now time for the World Championships final. The floodlights twinkling,

:50:45. > :50:53.but who will really sparkle and strike gold here? Good, clean start

:50:54. > :51:01.for everyone. Pajon hits the front and the decibel level goes up around

:51:02. > :51:06.track-side. Pajon leading the way. Post of the USA in second. Pajon

:51:07. > :51:14.with a gap, needs to keep her cool and keep the pace up. The crowd are

:51:15. > :51:18.beside themselves. Buchanan of Australia is in third, not even in

:51:19. > :51:23.the picture at the moment. Pajon has just got to get round the final

:51:24. > :51:29.bend. Post trying to challenge but she will not get close enough. Pajon

:51:30. > :51:34.takes the world title in front of her home crowd, in her home city, on

:51:35. > :51:39.the track that bears her name. The Olympic champion for London in 2012

:51:40. > :51:46.is the world champion in Colombia in 2016. The crowd have got what they

:51:47. > :51:49.came for. It was a wonderful moment and a dominating ride from a great

:51:50. > :51:54.champion. Flawless performance, absolutely perfect. Didn't make any

:51:55. > :52:00.mistakes, and you can see what it means to her and the crowd.

:52:01. > :52:06.Fantastic, a great start. Post got a poor start, would expect her to be

:52:07. > :52:12.cleaner out of the gate than that. Buchanan as well. The crowd are

:52:13. > :52:16.loving it. We saw Post on the last job, losing control and slipping a

:52:17. > :52:25.pedal so Buchanan could profit from that to take the silver medal.

:52:26. > :52:38.Superlatives demonstration from the great Pajon. This final performance

:52:39. > :52:41.from her was worth waiting for. The expectation from the crowd, the

:52:42. > :52:45.pressure, she was smiling at the start but the pressure must have

:52:46. > :52:52.been weighing on her mind, the fact Colombia wanted this so much. She's

:52:53. > :52:59.a national icon and it will be all over the news tomorrow, not just the

:53:00. > :53:03.back pages. She won rainbow jerseys in 2011 and 2014. If you add in time

:53:04. > :53:09.trials, this is her fifth World Championship gold medal. A

:53:10. > :53:15.superstar. Pajon, the world champion. Buchanan takes silver to

:53:16. > :53:21.add to the gold from the time trial. Alise Post taking the bronze. To win

:53:22. > :53:25.here is just amazing. I have been through so mini things before the

:53:26. > :53:31.race. I crashed so many bikes. It's a dream come true to win at home. My

:53:32. > :53:38.track, my city, my country, it's amazing. I'm stronger, faster, and I

:53:39. > :53:46.will be ready for Rio, do my best to do 100 sent there. It all went to

:53:47. > :53:51.script. -- 100%. Amazing scenes in Colombia. How do you feel watching

:53:52. > :53:55.that, you know her. She's a nice girl. We had many battles on the

:53:56. > :53:59.track but off the track we were good friends. It will be a dream come

:54:00. > :54:03.true for her to win in front of her home crowd. And she did it in style.

:54:04. > :54:09.It will be a race she will remember for ever. Dominating on her home

:54:10. > :54:14.track, that's pretty special. Amazing, she's a national hero and

:54:15. > :54:17.she's a household name in Colombia, Olympic champion. A lot of pressure

:54:18. > :54:22.and expectation on a track that bears her name, to step up and was

:54:23. > :54:28.fantastic. On the other ladies, it was a tight final. Alise Post was a

:54:29. > :54:32.bit unlucky. She made a bit of a mistake and lost second spot on the

:54:33. > :54:36.final straight. All the girls are pushing now and the level keeps

:54:37. > :54:40.stepping up in the females. Since I left the sport it has advanced even

:54:41. > :54:45.more. They have all gone out there, and to ride that course that the men

:54:46. > :54:51.ride as well, it's great for the sport. I have to ask a bit of you

:54:52. > :54:54.inside, do you wish you were in that final? Coming up the finishing line

:54:55. > :55:00.for that world title, nothing has ever compare to, no other feeling I

:55:01. > :55:03.have had is any better. A little bit of me was thinking, I wish it was

:55:04. > :55:11.me, but I'm still very happy for Pajon. His thoughts on how the World

:55:12. > :55:15.Championships went down. The BMX World Championships 2016, what a

:55:16. > :55:18.show. Liam Phillips couldn't make the final this weekend. He had a

:55:19. > :55:22.good show this weekend. A few mistakes and he will have lessons to

:55:23. > :55:32.learn in the lead up to Rio and I'm sure he will address them with his

:55:33. > :55:38.coach at home. Daudet, performance of his life in the final. Sam

:55:39. > :55:44.Willoughby went out in the semis as well. Nicholas Long on the podium, a

:55:45. > :55:49.bit of a shocker, but he's a hard worker. These guys were struggling,

:55:50. > :55:53.their legs were full of lactic acid. The women as well. The athleticism

:55:54. > :56:02.needed for this altitude and track length is exhausting. Pajon clinging

:56:03. > :56:08.on and winning in front of her home crowd was ecstatic. She's had some

:56:09. > :56:12.serious injuries, and she has knee issue they wanted to operate on but

:56:13. > :56:16.she said that she wanted to perform in front of her home crowd. The 2016

:56:17. > :56:21.World Championships have been a massive success. But atmospheres,

:56:22. > :56:27.good crowds, great to see a home gold medal. Good to see lots of

:56:28. > :56:33.nations performing well. Not one nation was dominating. It's going to

:56:34. > :56:37.be wide open in Rio. Colombia never disappoints. Fans coming out in

:56:38. > :56:41.numbers and the weather held off just about. Every time we race in

:56:42. > :56:45.South America it's the best atmosphere. They get behind all the

:56:46. > :56:49.riders and give great support. If there is a race on the calendar in

:56:50. > :56:53.South America you just want to get there and race. Pajon is the

:56:54. > :56:57.reigning Olympic champion and she doesn't have to travel that far to

:56:58. > :57:11.defend her title. Not long to go now...

:57:12. > :57:17.COMMENTARY MONTAGE: Jessica Ennis-Hill is back on top of the

:57:18. > :57:23.world. Wins the gold. Nicola Adams has just made history. That's a huge

:57:24. > :57:32.jump. Laura Trott is the world champion. The drama! Mo Farah,

:57:33. > :57:36.streaking away! Plenty more Olympic sport coming your way before the

:57:37. > :57:40.games get underway, starting with women's boxing. We have followed the

:57:41. > :57:48.British team as they chase the Rio spots. You can see how they got on

:57:49. > :57:53.in Kazakhstan in their final tournament for qualification. And

:57:54. > :57:59.live coverage of the women's European gymnastics Championships on

:58:00. > :58:04.Sunday. With football's European Championships just round the corner,

:58:05. > :58:08.what better way to whet your appetite for English success than

:58:09. > :58:17.Alan Shearer's look back at Euro 96. A look back tomorrow night. Massive

:58:18. > :58:21.thank you to Shanaze Reade and Chris Hoy for joining me. Disappointment

:58:22. > :58:28.for Liam Phillips unfortunately, but there will be smiles all round for

:58:29. > :58:30.the Queen of speed 2016, the world champion, from Colombia, Pajon.

:58:31. > :59:00.Thank you for watching. Goodbye. It welcomes

:59:01. > :59:03.a million citizens a day, burns ?300 billion worth

:59:04. > :59:10.of jet fuel and handles over five billion

:59:11. > :59:15.pieces of luggage a year.
