:00:27. > :00:31.Hello and a very warm welcome to the Dewars Centre for the Scottish

:00:31. > :00:35.International Open. Today was the first day of our coverage chair on

:00:35. > :00:42.BBC Two Scotland and what a day it was. On the brink behind me there

:00:42. > :00:49.were plenty of champions on display. There were three Scots in action,

:00:49. > :00:54.including the world champion Paul Foster. He set out to capture

:00:54. > :01:01.another championship following his victory in Perth two years ago. His

:01:01. > :01:06.opponent was Lee Rowland. Last year Mervyn King of dashed hopes of a

:01:06. > :01:15.home victory when he dispatched Stewart Anderson and the final. He

:01:15. > :01:25.began his defence with a match against Mark Radigan. But first up,

:01:25. > :01:27.

:01:27. > :01:33.a man shot to draw a crowd - Alex Marshall. Hopefully the eve five

:01:33. > :01:42.times world champion will claim victory on home turf. They say

:01:42. > :01:52.victory comes to all those who wait. Three matches were on today to

:01:52. > :02:12.

:02:12. > :02:18.So, let us deal with one of the final matches on here this

:02:18. > :02:23.afternoon. It was an absolute peach. It was Les Gillett against Alex

:02:23. > :02:28.Marshall. There is no-one on the tour with a CV as impressive as

:02:28. > :02:33.Alex Marshall. The only man to have won the world title five times. At

:02:33. > :02:41.that other titles and you have the ultimate bowler. He has not won

:02:41. > :02:51.here in Perth though, something he is determined to fix. Les Gillett

:02:51. > :02:58.

:02:58. > :03:05.had to come through qualifying to The world No. 7 started the

:03:05. > :03:15.brighter of the two, closing the first set. We join it at the 9th

:03:15. > :03:15.

:03:15. > :04:07.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:04:07. > :04:17.great shots played. Les Gillett is not far away here. It is almost a

:04:17. > :04:41.

:04:41. > :04:51.is a man who has handled pressure on many an occasion. He will have

:04:51. > :05:02.

:05:02. > :05:12.the advantage of last bowl, no not favour the brave. It was a

:05:12. > :05:33.

:05:33. > :05:43.what he will need to play next. Alex Marshall is in defending mode.

:05:43. > :06:03.

:06:03. > :06:13.Will he try to drop it? I am not bear to look. Gillett is also

:06:13. > :06:29.

:06:29. > :06:39.the respot. Both players with a bowl to play. It looks like one red,

:06:39. > :06:57.

:06:57. > :07:07.but it is immaterial, let's be out in the open and gives him a

:07:07. > :07:07.

:07:07. > :08:02.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:08:02. > :08:12.Gillett. Marshall has left a bit of space. He thought he was going to

:08:12. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:41.be killed by his own red bowl at even before it came to a halt. --

:08:41. > :08:42.

:08:42. > :09:24.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:09:24. > :09:34.Gillett. He has turned away. Is he heavy? It is all about the weight.

:09:34. > :09:38.

:09:38. > :09:44.He has drawn it!. -- it! Les Gillett takes the second set and

:09:44. > :09:54.sends it through to a tie-break. Incredible. It did not look as if

:09:54. > :10:16.

:10:16. > :10:26.the end it is just enough. It just goes to show, you cannot always

:10:26. > :10:27.

:10:27. > :10:37.trust body language. He doesn't like it, he turns away. He is not

:10:37. > :10:57.

:10:57. > :11:07.finish to that set. It is never dull in Perth. Les Gillett wins the

:11:07. > :11:40.

:11:40. > :11:50.second set. We have a tie-break, the game of the day. Alex Marshall

:11:50. > :11:50.

:11:50. > :14:53.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:14:53. > :15:03.is not hanging around. He just tried to draw the green at all and

:15:03. > :15:03.

:15:03. > :16:46.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:16:46. > :16:56.drop it off the jack. -- for good as the last one, but it is

:16:56. > :17:31.

:17:31. > :17:41.still good. That was a terrific played well, but he needs to get

:17:41. > :17:41.

:17:41. > :18:46.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:18:46. > :18:56.have a look. That is fair enough, given what is at stake at the

:18:56. > :19:02.

:19:02. > :19:07.moment. He plays this backhand so well. He will be so relieved with

:19:07. > :19:17.that. Could not have played that any better, it just Nestle's off

:19:17. > :19:17.

:19:17. > :21:18.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:21:18. > :21:28.Redburn. It was close, but not close enough. The second end goes

:21:28. > :21:36.

:21:36. > :21:44.is trying to draw the deadweight to the jack. If he had fallen back in

:21:44. > :21:54.off this red, he would have got the shot in. You can see kissing on

:21:54. > :22:31.

:22:31. > :22:41.there. If it had just dropped back, mark. He needed to get it past the

:22:41. > :22:41.

:22:41. > :24:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:24:46. > :24:55.bat. It did not reach. He was just near that green bowl. It is going

:24:56. > :25:21.

:25:21. > :25:31.to be a defensive game for Les It is not looking good for the Scot

:25:31. > :25:31.

:25:31. > :26:33.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:26:33. > :26:43.to try and give himself the last as well as we thought it might. It

:26:43. > :26:43.

:26:43. > :28:08.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:28:08. > :28:18.Marshall has one and had the right Marshall. A place in round two up

:28:18. > :28:35.

:28:35. > :28:38.wild card, into the tournament producing a major upset. Alex

:28:39. > :28:41.Marshall, the world No. 7, is out. Marshall, the world No. 7, is out.

:28:41. > :28:47.What a performance from the Englishman.

:28:47. > :28:50.Les, quite incredible. He had just beaten Alex Marshall, the five-time

:28:50. > :28:54.world championship -- five-time world champion.

:28:54. > :29:02.Unbelievable, to overcome him in Scotland, I knew I had to play well

:29:02. > :29:07.and produced the goods in the second set. Alex's bowls did not

:29:07. > :29:13.quite react on the longer set so. It was two sets again, keep going,

:29:13. > :29:16.keep going, and it paid off. To be fair to Alex, it probably wasn't

:29:16. > :29:22.his best game, but I took full advantage.

:29:22. > :29:26.That you certainly did. Alex, it all started off fairly well, but in

:29:26. > :29:34.the second set Les got back into it. I was happy with how I played in

:29:34. > :29:41.the first set, in the second set I did not play much better. If I had

:29:41. > :29:47.the right weight I lost my line, so it was a bit of a mixed bag.

:29:47. > :29:51.And for you, Les, you had dropped outside the world's top 16. Ian

:29:51. > :29:55.Bond said you should be in there with the quality of play you have.

:29:55. > :29:58.You must be feeling good now you have taken Alex Marshall out of the

:29:58. > :30:03.tournament? Obviously, to be fair there is not

:30:03. > :30:07.a lot and it in the top 16. We all have good days and bad days. It

:30:07. > :30:10.does not make you a bad bowler overnight, and I have been playing

:30:10. > :30:15.reasonably well. I am happy with my form and if it continues hopefully

:30:15. > :30:19.I will be here at the weekend. Congratulations to you.

:30:19. > :30:27.Astonishing, the five-time world champion, Alex Marshall, out of the

:30:27. > :30:31.competition. Paul Foster won his last game,

:30:31. > :30:35.winning his fourth world title. He was in action against the qualifier

:30:35. > :30:41.at Lee Rowland. One of the real strengths of Paul

:30:41. > :30:51.Foster's game is his draw. The world champion found the target

:30:51. > :31:01.

:31:01. > :31:06.playing with a little bit of weight Paul Foster continued to pile on

:31:06. > :31:11.the pressure, once again relying on that deadly draw. The Englishman

:31:11. > :31:17.also has a pretty impressive line and length. He started to find its

:31:17. > :31:27.during the second set. But, whatever Lee Rowland had to

:31:27. > :31:30.

:31:30. > :31:37.offer, Foster better that. -- bettered it.

:31:37. > :31:40.The debutants did not have enough to beat the world number one and

:31:40. > :31:45.to beat the world number one and Forster won, 12-3, 10-5.

:31:45. > :31:52.The players to reach the final will receive a handsome cheque, but it

:31:52. > :31:58.is almost impossible to make a living from playing bowls, so most

:31:58. > :32:07.have a day job. Mervyn King has a beautiful one, in Norfolk.

:32:07. > :32:17.beautiful one, in Norfolk. One of the nicest places in Norfolk

:32:17. > :32:29.

:32:29. > :32:36.I could not really stick being inside. I did a manager's job 15

:32:36. > :32:42.years ago and did not stick that the very long. Then I was a

:32:42. > :32:48.gamekeeper, bedside, and when the bowls came along I had to go self-

:32:48. > :32:55.employed, so I moved to pest- control. I get 21 days' holiday a

:32:55. > :33:05.year, and with playing for England that takes up 10 or 14 days at a

:33:05. > :33:11.

:33:11. > :33:15.time, so because of that I went It is a bit appropriate for next

:33:15. > :33:24.week, having Hyland cattle, at least it will make me feel at home

:33:24. > :33:26.Mervyn King is the winner of the Scottish International Open in

:33:26. > :33:31.2010... 2010...

:33:31. > :33:35.It was a big final, we probably both, to be fair, did not play as

:33:35. > :33:40.well as we had in the previous games. Not as classic as it could

:33:40. > :33:46.have been, but at the end of the day I am happy to have one and come

:33:46. > :33:51.up on top at that occasion. The standard of the players is getting

:33:51. > :33:55.so good and you know all for a fact you have got to play well. If you

:33:55. > :34:01.have one bad season your ranking list is wiped out and people can

:34:01. > :34:06.easily slip out. The main thing is to try and be consistent. I have

:34:06. > :34:10.been well up in the rankings and I have been right down-and-out.

:34:10. > :34:14.Probably six years ago I was gone if I had not won the world

:34:14. > :34:19.championships, then I got back in the top 16, just, and worked my way

:34:19. > :34:23.back up to where I am now. It is about being consistent, but one bad

:34:23. > :34:32.here and with the quality of players out there now, you have to

:34:32. > :34:35.do well. I am not big-headed anyway, I try and play my bowls and will

:34:35. > :34:40.put his bidder. Obviously it has been good enough over the years,

:34:40. > :34:46.and it is all about being consistent. You need to get your

:34:46. > :34:49.first bowl going, and defeat at -- if I can get my first bowl down it

:34:49. > :34:54.settles you down. That is where I have seen a lot of the tournament,

:34:54. > :35:04.the person who wins is the person who plays most consistent. That is

:35:04. > :35:12.

:35:12. > :35:17.what you have got to be to win Where else would you want to be on

:35:17. > :35:22.a day like this? It is nice now, but it can be very cold - a bit

:35:23. > :35:28.like Scotland on a bad day! You have to feel a bit jealous of

:35:28. > :35:32.Mervyn King - a wonderful job and a wonderful bowler. He was up against

:35:32. > :35:37.the young Scottish qualifier this afternoon, Mark Radigan.

:35:37. > :35:41.You may recognise this face, if you watched our coverage two years ago

:35:41. > :35:45.you would have seen him in the Young Masters. The 17-year-old from

:35:45. > :35:51.Hamilton was up against a formidable opponent this afternoon,

:35:51. > :35:58.defending champion at Mervyn King. It was King who got his nose in

:35:58. > :36:07.front in the first set. We join it at the start of the six red.

:36:07. > :36:17.Commentary from Paul Mitchell and David Corkill. -- at the start of

:36:17. > :36:17.

:36:17. > :37:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:37:45. > :37:50.played indeed. He delivers a peach One green.

:37:50. > :38:00.Mark Radigan coming down to have a look at the head as a result of

:38:00. > :38:08.

:38:08. > :38:13.He really wanted the bowl first, got the bowl -- jack first. This is

:38:13. > :38:18.a very strong position for Mark Radigan. I would be very tempted

:38:18. > :38:28.just to bowl one of jack Hyde on the forehand. Give himself a little

:38:28. > :39:02.

:39:02. > :39:08.bit of width. -- to roll one jack get out of, but he will be looking

:39:08. > :39:12.for the split with this. Nice to see a smile on the face of

:39:12. > :39:18.Mark Radigan. If he can manage to get the split

:39:18. > :39:28.absolutely right I think this green bowl will slide away. The jack may

:39:28. > :39:51.

:39:51. > :39:55.unlucky with the jack moving back? I think he has. The one green.

:39:55. > :40:05.He has had a couple of rubs against the green, really. It looked like

:40:05. > :40:10.

:40:10. > :40:16.he had done well, Mervyn King, then the problem. It took all the pace

:40:16. > :40:26.and Govett, if he had got the green bowl first it would have been right

:40:26. > :40:48.

:40:48. > :40:58.out. Mark, by an even playing this? have done something he did not want

:40:58. > :41:06.

:41:06. > :41:14.to do there. As you say, terrific of pressure here. That is two ends

:41:14. > :41:24.Mervyn King has put in three or four bowls very close and lost a

:41:24. > :41:24.

:41:24. > :43:08.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:43:08. > :43:18.ends. Two he has lost by singles, the other two he has lifted heavy

:43:18. > :43:18.

:43:18. > :44:03.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:44:03. > :44:10.is so good at spotting bowls. This is a challenge.

:44:10. > :44:14.Mark Radigan comes up to have a look. He describes himself as very

:44:14. > :44:19.competitive. He has got a fair bit of work to do here.

:44:19. > :44:25.The he has got a chance to come in that way if he wants to play at on

:44:25. > :44:29.the forehand. The percentage shot is to come deep

:44:29. > :44:36.on the jack and try and squeeze it through, if he can, to this

:44:36. > :44:46.position. If he can get the jack somewhere like that it could be a

:44:46. > :45:03.

:45:03. > :45:13.double. A very difficult shot. effort and a good shot to drive, a

:45:13. > :45:13.

:45:13. > :46:14.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:46:14. > :46:24.him speed up off the end. Just an a good player in her own right.

:46:24. > :46:24.

:46:24. > :47:40.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:47:40. > :47:44.She won the mixed pairs. Masters final in 2,000 added. He

:47:44. > :47:54.was 6-8 down in the first set and tank the set, so he has been in

:47:54. > :48:18.

:48:18. > :48:28.this position before. -- and tied the jack to hide it from his young

:48:28. > :48:43.

:48:43. > :48:53.to come up after the first two bowls and the referee has said, you

:48:53. > :48:58.

:48:58. > :49:08.must come up and have a look at impressed by the way he has been

:49:08. > :49:28.

:49:28. > :49:32.playing this game, because Mervyn It was a really good drive, I did

:49:32. > :49:41.not realise he could drive as accurately as that, he should have

:49:41. > :49:51.been doing it much earlier. That forehand drive is difficult on a

:49:51. > :49:51.

:49:51. > :51:24.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:51:24. > :51:29.been raised spotted. He -- re- net. What are the chances of

:51:29. > :51:39.getting a four in the last? Not very high, but absolutely perfect,

:51:39. > :51:39.

:51:39. > :53:15.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:53:15. > :53:25.got gaps like that that can be quite challenging. -- I don't mind

:53:25. > :53:42.

:53:42. > :53:52.try and scored a three if he can. bowls people would not think of

:53:52. > :53:52.

:53:52. > :55:06.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:55:06. > :55:14.turn over green. He knows this is potentially

:55:14. > :55:24.dangerous for him. That is what he is after, the inside edge, so the

:55:24. > :55:45.

:55:45. > :55:50.jack does not move too far. He bowl.

:55:50. > :55:58.Not at the perfect result, though. He has put pressure on him with

:55:58. > :56:07.this. Just caught the wrong side. The inside edge was what he was

:56:07. > :56:17.after. If Mervyn King makes one mistake here it could be a problem.

:56:17. > :56:38.

:56:38. > :56:42.He is coming across the head. That well when he has to, but he decided

:56:42. > :56:46.to come in on the backhand. Always the danger you can get yourself

:56:46. > :56:52.blocked off if you do not take the open hand, but Mervyn King was

:56:52. > :57:02.comfortable here. Most unusual to come across the

:57:02. > :57:02.

:57:02. > :57:09.head, most players would stay on the hand, but nice, and Mervyn King

:57:09. > :57:15.caused 10-6. The match continued in a similar vein, despite stout

:57:15. > :57:18.resistance Mervyn King continued to tighten the screw, the match ending

:57:18. > :57:21.tighten the screw, the match ending 10-6, 11-1.

:57:21. > :57:26.Commiserations to Mark Radigan, a fine display, Mervyn King through

:57:26. > :57:30.to the second round. That is almost it, but our esteemed commentator

:57:30. > :57:35.David Corkill likes to show was what he thinks is the finest shot

:57:35. > :57:38.of the day. My short of the day is taken from

:57:38. > :57:44.the match of Les Gillett and Alex Marshall. Alex Marshall is six

:57:44. > :57:54.shots down with two shots against them. Les Gillett plays the most

:57:54. > :57:57.

:57:57. > :57:58.remarkable bowl. By the two here are Les Gilletts,

:57:58. > :58:08.By the two here are Les Gilletts, and Alex Marshall must play the

:58:08. > :58:10.

:58:10. > :58:13.brilliance, and that is why it was brilliance, and that is why it was

:58:14. > :58:18.my short of the day. A great shot from Alex Marshall,

:58:18. > :58:21.but it does not matter - he is gone, but it does not matter - he is gone,

:58:21. > :58:31.because today we completed the second round line-up. Defending

:58:31. > :58:47.
