:00:32. > :00:37.Hollow and a warm welcome to the Dewars Centre for the Scottish
:00:38. > :00:43.International open and this afternoon right here there were some
:00:44. > :00:47.pretty impressive champions on display stop world number one and
:00:48. > :00:54.the only man to successfully defend his title, Nick Brett embarks on his
:00:55. > :00:57.quest to win an unprecedented third consecutive Scottish international
:00:58. > :01:04.Open. When it is meant to be, it is meant to be, no one has ever
:01:05. > :01:08.retrained it, I was the lucky one. The man he beat in the last two
:01:09. > :01:13.finals also gets his challenge underway today and Paul Foster is
:01:14. > :01:18.determined to add to his 2012 Scottish victory. It is good to be
:01:19. > :01:21.back in Perth for the international Open. I have had a good last three
:01:22. > :01:28.years here and long may it continue. Rounding out our list of
:01:29. > :01:31.legends in action today, the 2014 champion and Commonwealth Games
:01:32. > :01:39.single bold medallist Darren Burnett. Lots of highlights to look
:01:40. > :01:42.forward to but the action actually got underway here on Saturday and at
:01:43. > :01:49.the start of play today, it went like this. Stewart Anderson was
:01:50. > :01:55.through from the world champion against Alex Wen. Andy Thomson Pete
:01:56. > :01:57.Brett Arkley. Mervyn King was knocked out against Graham
:01:58. > :02:11.McDougall. Greg Harlow managed to get through
:02:12. > :02:18.as did Jonathan Ross. David Gurley, the former world champion is out.
:02:19. > :02:23.John Price is out as well. Mark Royal is safely through. Let us get
:02:24. > :02:27.to the first of the matches this morning, John Fleming against Paul
:02:28. > :02:32.Foster. There are very few players as dominant and deadly as Paul
:02:33. > :02:38.Foster, he has been in the top five for the last 15 years, most of them
:02:39. > :02:42.either a second or first. He was the hottest of hot favourites against
:02:43. > :02:47.John Fleming. He is something of an unknown quantity, only 19 years old,
:02:48. > :02:52.he has won the British Isles under 25 singles title, he is a senior
:02:53. > :02:56.international but did know he was up against it today against the fourth
:02:57. > :03:04.time world singles champion. We will join the match now, in the first set
:03:05. > :03:13.and it is all square at seven peace. -- a piece.
:03:14. > :03:18.It will be interesting if the players go past the 30 seconds,
:03:19. > :03:26.there is a bill, but last year the first time we heard it, it gave us a
:03:27. > :03:39.bit of a fright -- bell. There are mixed feelings. It is not easy. That
:03:40. > :03:48.clock ticking away with every ball. It adds another dimension to
:03:49. > :03:52.televised alan-macro. -- bowls. It will never be introduced in
:03:53. > :03:56.mainstream play because they do not have the facilities for it. They
:03:57. > :04:15.rely on umpires to negate slow play. This is trouble. If you drop the
:04:16. > :04:20.Jack length slightly... This direction, he has been losing shots.
:04:21. > :04:25.It is properly why he adjusted it, I thought he would have gone very
:04:26. > :04:31.short. He will have to follow that one.
:04:32. > :05:06.Struggling. Oh dear! Real trouble now for Paul Foster.
:05:07. > :05:20.There is number three against the Jack length. Another Fozzie victory.
:05:21. > :05:25.He has been in many a pickle, you would not bet against him. He
:05:26. > :05:29.usefully gets out of so much trouble, will this get back in time,
:05:30. > :05:39.that is the question, here it comes, dropped back... It is just
:05:40. > :05:44.like Fozzie to do that and John will be looking down the backhand with
:05:45. > :05:51.this next bowl. That is why he is one of the best in the world. What
:05:52. > :05:59.he is looking at is getting onto that bowl, if he does and gets it
:06:00. > :06:09.absolutely plumb, he takes their red bowl out, that is a director shot
:06:10. > :06:14.through between the two. -- direct shot. John called the time-out to
:06:15. > :06:23.give him that little bit of extra time stop control the wait, that is
:06:24. > :06:31.better. Nice pace. Will it hold? He was a fraction.
:06:32. > :06:40.Typical Fozzie. Yes. That is why you love the sport, Paul Foster in
:06:41. > :06:46.trouble, looking at potentially losing the set, might have got a
:06:47. > :06:52.draw out of it, if he could then reply, but you do not want to lose a
:06:53. > :06:59.3 there and that was perfect will stop there was a little short on. He
:07:00. > :07:03.would have looked at the backhand and the angles were not good and he
:07:04. > :07:08.could have taken the green bowl and run through between the shorthand
:07:09. > :07:11.and the Jack will stop looked at the previous bowl but that is the sort
:07:12. > :07:23.of shot mag gives you a lot of confidence. John Fleming very much
:07:24. > :07:45.alive in this set, the advantage of the last bowl.
:07:46. > :08:05.That looked easy from the second it left his hand. A little snap of the
:08:06. > :08:11.fingers in frustration. He is certainly greening the alan-macro
:08:12. > :08:36.quite nicely, coming out in a straight line. -- bowls.
:08:37. > :08:47.You'd be tempted now to change bowl. Even a foot short now in the
:08:48. > :08:52.shorthand would be a cracking bowl. Onto the forehand he goes.
:08:53. > :09:07.Seize the bend. He is labouring a little bit. Six inches narrower, he
:09:08. > :09:12.would have been a lot happier. Potential little catch here. Make
:09:13. > :09:26.sure you are up. He is the wrong side of it. Put it
:09:27. > :09:31.into a good home, but, as soon as he was on the outside of the red one he
:09:32. > :09:36.was not going to get back in time. Interesting choice for Paul Foster,
:09:37. > :09:43.he has to guard against a potential Trail. That could make it to green.
:09:44. > :09:48.Either that or you block up beforehand by playing the perfect
:09:49. > :09:57.bowl. He is going to try and tap his own bowl or get cover. Percentage
:09:58. > :10:07.shot, this one. Two possibilities. He is not getting cover, though. A
:10:08. > :10:18.chance here. You are tighter, in off the bowl, pick up the Jack Ford two.
:10:19. > :10:23.The forehand will hold if you give three or four feat of green, it will
:10:24. > :10:30.hold with the extra weight. It could really change his line
:10:31. > :10:39.dramatically... That is probably half a metre inside his previous
:10:40. > :10:45.line. Had to go even narrower. Two shots for the set, Paul Foster. He
:10:46. > :10:51.had a chance to tired up, chance to win it, but Paul Foster in the end
:10:52. > :11:02.comes through with the final 3am is. Comes from 7-6 down to lead 10-7 and
:11:03. > :11:07.to take the opening set. Good set. So, Paul Foster taking the first set
:11:08. > :11:44.10-7 we join the match in the second set, John Fleming is ahead.
:11:45. > :11:54.Well, he is moving on to the forehand early and he has played it
:11:55. > :12:21.well. Yes. That is the way he started the first set.
:12:22. > :12:30.He does not like it, it will be an inch away. I think this one is a bit
:12:31. > :12:37.heavier, not much, though. It is not even heavier, it was wide actually.
:12:38. > :12:44.He knew something was wrong. Still a great shot.
:12:45. > :12:49.It is not only that, the angle is good to come off as well. He can use
:12:50. > :13:02.it as a shoulder. Does not need it. It is coming in
:13:03. > :13:10.right behind, that is a great bowl, it really is a shipper shot will
:13:11. > :13:20.stop Paul is having a good look at it -- a super shot.
:13:21. > :13:29.Being cautioned not to go to close in case the bowl moves, it looks
:13:30. > :13:42.like it is touching green, but not touching read. A great bowl from
:13:43. > :13:49.John Fleming. -- red. If it has won the green, you walk away. Walk away
:13:50. > :14:01.on that one. Big recovery bowl needed. What has
:14:02. > :14:08.been interesting, it is not always the player who has played the best
:14:09. > :14:12.bowls at the end, one good bowl from your opponent is enough to secure
:14:13. > :14:19.the shop. Quite often it is the last bowl or at the third one. Young was
:14:20. > :14:23.get the impression two players are feeling their way through the game
:14:24. > :14:30.and it is who is going to step up to the mark and put a couple of really
:14:31. > :14:35.good ends together -- you almost get the impression. You cannot look past
:14:36. > :14:41.Paul Foster when it comes to this. At the same time, this young man is
:14:42. > :14:44.showing no nerves whatsoever. He has been very happy out there, looks
:14:45. > :15:44.very content on the portable rink. a place for straight bowls,
:15:45. > :15:46.personally I do not think any rink or green is the place for straight
:15:47. > :16:59.bowls. I could not agree more. To bowl onto their jack. That will
:17:00. > :17:10.certainly be a receiver. Bowl onto bowl, it is a risky shot.
:17:11. > :17:18.A definite shot available here for John Fleming. I would be tempted on
:17:19. > :17:26.the backhand, funnily enough. Time-out called. You're almost
:17:27. > :17:35.guaranteeing it will stay in to the red. With that forehand, he has
:17:36. > :17:52.turned his back on it. It must be narrow. It is. He did not have the
:17:53. > :18:00.weight either, a bit of both. Interesting last 3am is on the set,
:18:01. > :18:17.Paul Foster will probably be two down -- 3am is. -- three ends. Sex
:18:18. > :18:26.ends on the second set, six shots scored. -- six. Paul Foster needs to
:18:27. > :18:40.tie the set to avoid advance and go to a tie-break.
:18:41. > :18:51.Both Alex Marshall and Paul Foster working with their bowls now, he is
:18:52. > :18:59.employed by them, he does not have much choice. At the same time, when
:19:00. > :19:05.the guys are going well, even when they are not going so well, the
:19:06. > :19:10.bowls really do not come into it, they will have put a lot of work in
:19:11. > :19:14.with a new set of bowls and checked out different things, so similar to
:19:15. > :19:22.their previous ones, no excuses there and nor should there be. I
:19:23. > :19:28.think it is one of these hard fought first-round matches, that is all,
:19:29. > :19:35.you have to grind it out. Good game so far. The number of seeds who have
:19:36. > :19:49.not made it through, David girlie, John Price have both gone out. --
:19:50. > :19:56.Davids Gourlay. Two good bowls, a tempting target. -- attempting.
:19:57. > :20:17.Looked good all the way. Give it a little bit extra pace, not much,
:20:18. > :20:23.just an arriving drawer. Just enough to get to its own, to punch it in or
:20:24. > :20:26.get down into the bowls or the green one. A split on the inside would be
:20:27. > :20:57.perfect. Solid jack, that will do. Slightly off centre, allowing
:20:58. > :21:25.changes just that little bit. -- the line changes.
:21:26. > :21:48.A couple and they are close enough to be difficult to beat.
:21:49. > :22:06.Just looking to take the weight from his last one.
:22:07. > :22:17.Still chucking through. Perfect line. Both the bowls work good, the
:22:18. > :22:26.first and the fourth. The weight just deserted.
:22:27. > :22:33.The battle of the Scots in the opening round, Paul Foster with the
:22:34. > :22:39.opening set, John Fleming, watching as his lead has evaporated in the
:22:40. > :22:44.second set. Sometimes you see their bowl dropping them, to tempt the
:22:45. > :23:01.opposition into trying to draw it off, any closer, he probably would
:23:02. > :23:10.have had a go at it. With weight... Jack was on the top of the tee, 27
:23:11. > :23:16.metres. At that of monkeying around with the mat and the jack in this
:23:17. > :23:20.match. Both players trying to find the length that suits them. There
:23:21. > :23:26.has been some very good bowling, some really good stuff. I suppose if
:23:27. > :23:30.you're going to be really harsh, you could say there were lot of short
:23:31. > :23:33.bowls and a bit of inconsistency, but it is the first round, it does
:23:34. > :23:45.take time. If Paul Foster does see this one
:23:46. > :23:52.out, John Fleming will no that their chances along the way, he is still
:23:53. > :23:53.very much in this for now. -- John Fleming will know that there are
:23:54. > :24:22.chances along the way. Just hope that awkward angle, he
:24:23. > :24:27.made not get much out of it, he has to go on the other side. He really
:24:28. > :24:32.needs the second shot, he wants to go into the last end at the absolute
:24:33. > :24:36.worse, one down, he does not want to be any more than that because he
:24:37. > :24:43.will have to chase the end a little bit. There is a shot here for Paul
:24:44. > :24:49.Foster. Egos of the turns the jack around for three will be very
:24:50. > :24:52.difficult to get out of -- he knows if he turns. I do not know if he has
:24:53. > :25:07.pushed it. He can still come around it. Going
:25:08. > :25:15.for the runner, try and open something up. It is a brave shot.
:25:16. > :25:20.The only danger with that is if he got into the green bowl he would
:25:21. > :25:24.have winged it out, three down and one bowl to come. I would have been
:25:25. > :25:31.inclined to draw that and try and get second, it was not that far away
:25:32. > :25:35.with his previous bowl. If you have got second you always have a chance
:25:36. > :25:47.of picking up a double in the last end. Bit of movement, just go again.
:25:48. > :25:56.That is a big bowl for Paul Foster, if he can pick up a two here. He did
:25:57. > :26:04.not allow it to annoy him, that little bit of movement, did he? Cut
:26:05. > :26:10.to the jack and it would have been absolutely perfect because he would
:26:11. > :26:20.have made a three. Just reset it himself. This was great, in it
:26:21. > :26:24.comes. They bear the mark are checking to see if it touched the
:26:25. > :26:30.jack. He is going again, cannot afford to get his own bowl. That has
:26:31. > :26:38.pace and power and rewards nothing in the end. You cannot blame him,
:26:39. > :26:48.very hard to beat those two bowls, he knew that himself. Take the two
:26:49. > :26:50.out, I think that is probably all. Again, Fozzie has put in a strong
:26:51. > :27:07.second half in the set. He has dipped into that well of good
:27:08. > :27:11.bowls, plucked a few out. He is looking like he will be on top of
:27:12. > :27:19.his opponent in the next round, John Fleming, he needs a three, he has
:27:20. > :27:28.only scored 13 in the match to date. Paul Foster, dropping short, John
:27:29. > :27:50.Fleming taking advantage. No such mistake from Paul Foster here.
:27:51. > :28:21.Paul Foster has two choices. You can follow his own or changed tack and
:28:22. > :28:26.rest on the green bowl. He is just trying to get olds on the head. Few
:28:27. > :28:50.inches heavy. A good effort. In it comes. A little
:28:51. > :29:03.on lucky, because he has turned the jack towards the red old. -- bowl. I
:29:04. > :29:11.don't think he will do anything different here other than draw this,
:29:12. > :29:16.because he can afford to lose two shots. You don't want to leave
:29:17. > :29:32.yourself a third to be taken out. If he rests a bowl either side, it
:29:33. > :29:39.doesn't really matter. He gets the closer one. That is already a strain
:29:40. > :29:45.to do. But he has turned his back a little on that, he must think he is
:29:46. > :29:54.heavy. It was certainly on his mind, but he has crept in. Just a blade,
:29:55. > :30:02.and he knew that out of the hand. Now, you need three. Do you go for
:30:03. > :30:09.the take-out with this bowl? Just draw it. Just draw under the red
:30:10. > :30:24.bowls, that is all he wants to do. He will do well to get back from
:30:25. > :30:29.there. He is too heavy. He was trying to reach them, but at the
:30:30. > :30:35.same time, he didn't want that pace, he just wanted to rest them off with
:30:36. > :30:41.a draw. Set the double, give himself a chance with his last bowl. Nothing
:30:42. > :30:45.on the re-spot, that is what he is looking at. No joy in the re-spot
:30:46. > :30:59.position. He is looking to get to this on the
:31:00. > :31:02.forehand, and I'm sure he has the weight. He is coming in for a close
:31:03. > :31:16.second. That is the shot I thought he would
:31:17. > :31:19.have played last time round. He was probably looking for the green one
:31:20. > :31:23.with that, but he knew that any touch on the jack was more than good
:31:24. > :31:34.enough. UMPIRE: Time-out calls. John has two
:31:35. > :31:42.time-outs remaining. I don't think he has a shot on, I really don't.
:31:43. > :31:53.That last shot of Paul Foster's has more or less killed it off. I think
:31:54. > :32:00.my jelly baby is safe. That is that imaginary jelly baby, of course. You
:32:01. > :32:05.wouldn't bet with a real one! John Fleming on his first trip to the
:32:06. > :32:15.Scottish International open has put up a terrific fight.
:32:16. > :32:27.APPLAUSE He survives against the 19-year-old
:32:28. > :32:32.Scott. He gave it his all, John Fleming. He led in the first and
:32:33. > :32:37.second set, but couldn't find a way to close them out. Paul Foster get
:32:38. > :32:43.himself safely into round two of the Scottish International open.
:32:44. > :32:50.Yes, four time world champion through, but Paul, you had to work
:32:51. > :32:55.for that. I knew that before the game started, and I didn't play
:32:56. > :33:07.awfully well. I played massive bowl when I needed to, but I kept
:33:08. > :33:12.dropping the shot. The match starts and the pace changes, and I should
:33:13. > :33:18.have known that. It gets frustrating that you think you are good, but you
:33:19. > :33:22.drop that shot. John, it is never easy when you are in the first round
:33:23. > :33:27.against the world champion. Didn't seem overawed to play against a guy
:33:28. > :33:31.of this quality, though. Paul has been here ten times, and it is my
:33:32. > :33:36.first time, I was just trying to settle in as quickly as I could. But
:33:37. > :33:44.towards the end of the first set, I struggled a little with my weight.
:33:45. > :33:50.But you are putting pressure on this guy here, and you seemed to be,
:33:51. > :33:54.watching your face, you didn't seem happy through a lot of that. You
:33:55. > :33:58.looked frustrated from that to time which allowed John to put pressure
:33:59. > :34:03.on you. The frustration is because you think you are good and yet you
:34:04. > :34:09.are dropping the shot. It is not a very good day at the office, but a
:34:10. > :34:14.win is a win. John gave me opportunities, so there were some
:34:15. > :34:18.good ends and some scrappy ends. But I got the main point.
:34:19. > :34:24.So, Paul Foster through to the second round, but he did have to
:34:25. > :34:30.work pretty hard for it. The man who won last year was in action here
:34:31. > :34:34.today, Nicky Brett. Since he won here two years ago, his success has
:34:35. > :34:37.been stratospheric. He became the first man to retain the Scottish
:34:38. > :34:41.title, and then took the International open title with an
:34:42. > :34:50.unbelievable display of quality bowls.
:34:51. > :34:57.I would rather be defending champion than never won it. Somebody is
:34:58. > :35:01.always going to defeat the defending champion some point, but I will try
:35:02. > :35:07.to carry the run on as long as I can. The emotion of losing was
:35:08. > :35:11.massively disappointing. Paul thoroughly deserved the win, he
:35:12. > :35:16.dominated the final. It was like being hit by a boss, he played
:35:17. > :35:22.really well. The following year, I went away, came back, I knew what
:35:23. > :35:25.happened the year before, so I knew it was going to be massively
:35:26. > :35:28.difficult, but I managed to hang in until the end, got a couple of good
:35:29. > :35:38.ones, got a good result with the last one.
:35:39. > :35:50.And I1-macro my first tournament, which is unbelievable for me. -- and
:35:51. > :35:57.I won my first tournament. When you win your first one, you have got the
:35:58. > :36:04.monkey off your back, if you like. And retain it, and again, played
:36:05. > :36:09.well in the final. The few good bowls here and there, the game. One
:36:10. > :36:16.of those finals probably a little more closely fought. And I just
:36:17. > :36:20.managed again to find a couple of good runs. When it is meant to be,
:36:21. > :36:22.it is meant to be. No one has ever retained it, someone was going to,
:36:23. > :36:34.and I was the lucky one. Records will tell you that it is
:36:35. > :36:41.difficult for the same person to win an event two years, back-to-back. It
:36:42. > :36:46.is difficult for the same person to win when each year, let alone win
:36:47. > :36:51.the same event three times. So someone is eventually going to put
:36:52. > :36:55.me out. I just hope it is later on in the tournament rather than
:36:56. > :36:58.earlier. He really does like making history
:36:59. > :37:05.does Nicky Brett, and today he was up against team-mate Robert Elmore.
:37:06. > :37:10.It is never easy playing your friend, especially if that friend is
:37:11. > :37:17.in the form of his life, and that was facing Robert Elmore. He has
:37:18. > :37:21.played against and alongside Brett, and he knew that accuracy would be
:37:22. > :37:24.key. But in the first set, the defending champion took it with
:37:25. > :37:36.ease, and we join the match in the second set. Brett is 5-3 ahead.
:37:37. > :37:49.COMMENTATOR: Three more singles. We have seen it before. Certainly
:37:50. > :38:20.there. He has not played well, but he has not been put away.
:38:21. > :38:30.I think that is the best first trip Max three he has played. Two
:38:31. > :38:32.excellent liveries, back-to-back. He needs a few more to try to seek the
:38:33. > :39:05.second set. It is starting to happen now. Robert
:39:06. > :39:12.Elmore lying two. It is very accessible. And now this gets
:39:13. > :39:19.interesting because the seventh end of the nine end set. Nick scores in
:39:20. > :39:24.this end, and Robert will have to chase them for the last couple of
:39:25. > :39:29.ends, whereas if Robert scores, he is writing with a of forcing a
:39:30. > :39:32.tie-break. He is looking good again. Number three. That will force a
:39:33. > :39:46.drive. UMPIRE: Three green. This is what we
:39:47. > :39:49.were talking about, the chance to get Nicky under a little pressure
:39:50. > :39:54.here, and that is what he has done this time. He will go for the hit
:39:55. > :40:41.here. this time. He will go for the hit
:40:42. > :41:59.Furballs! A good strike right down the middle.
:42:00. > :42:26.That is the nature of sex games, you can lose the first one and just
:42:27. > :42:35.sneak over the line in the second, and it is all to play for -- sets
:42:36. > :43:52.games. Mean it comes.
:43:53. > :44:07.UMPIRE: One red. Certainly Nick would like to score a double in this
:44:08. > :44:13.end if he possibly can. Robert has to win the last two ends. He has
:44:14. > :44:43.dropped it short. It is all down to the weight, and he
:44:44. > :44:47.is witty close. Now, the difficulty from Robert is that the ideal shot
:44:48. > :44:59.would be on the backhand all the way through, take the two Reds off, or
:45:00. > :45:03.get the jack into the ditch or on the re-spot. It hasn't been shot
:45:04. > :45:14.that has desperately successful so far. He recognised the need for it.
:45:15. > :45:38.Off target. Took one out. He didn't look comfortable, he stood
:45:39. > :45:45.off to one side of the mat, wasn't sure about it. There is a proverbial
:45:46. > :45:53.country mile to draw. APPLAUSE
:45:54. > :46:04.And in he comes. UMPIRE: Two shots, Nick Brett.
:46:05. > :46:06.That was the ideal situation. He hasn't really been within a sniff of
:46:07. > :46:20.scoring three in this match. Mainly singles, couple of doubles.
:46:21. > :46:26.One of those was as a result of a drive that got a horrible result in
:46:27. > :46:38.Nicky Brett. UMPIRE: 27 metres.
:46:39. > :47:16.And if he wins it here, it will be an 11th consecutive win in Perth.
:47:17. > :47:31.This should be an excess is now in closing the end down. Get the first
:47:32. > :47:35.two bowls close and then look for cover. It is not bad. Beatable, but
:47:36. > :47:53.not bad. APPLAUSE
:47:54. > :48:17.UMPIRE: One green. Just making sure there is no way his
:48:18. > :48:21.opponent can engineer three shots. He is running the length with this,
:48:22. > :48:22.so there is a chance that if he can remember the line and length, he can
:48:23. > :48:41.add another one in. Needs to be here, but he is
:48:42. > :48:47.struggling for pace. That was a chance, and Nick knew it, as well.
:48:48. > :48:52.This will totally relax him. He can afford to play this on the forehand,
:48:53. > :48:56.actually. So there is no shoulder to come off. Not worry about losing a
:48:57. > :49:16.double. Yes, moving on the forehand for a
:49:17. > :49:19.tactical bowl. The third bowl of Robert Elmore certain he'd defused
:49:20. > :49:46.the chances of an explosive ending. Might as well just use a time-out,
:49:47. > :49:52.plenty of them available. No need to run. I don't think he has a shot
:49:53. > :49:55.available, just hit it down and hope he gets something on the runner, but
:49:56. > :50:03.I can't imagine him doing much with it. He is trying to do anything he
:50:04. > :50:08.can. He will take the single. And the defending champion is safely
:50:09. > :50:12.through. Only once in the history of this tournament has the defending
:50:13. > :50:19.champion lost in the opening round, Nicky Brett in very little danger
:50:20. > :50:21.today. And the man who is looking to repeat for the third time is
:50:22. > :50:32.currently through. The defending champion is through to
:50:33. > :50:40.round two. Nicky Brett, you must be pleased. Luckily I got a fast
:50:41. > :50:44.start, and it is crucial for me to get away to a solid start, and
:50:45. > :50:49.luckily I found a couple early. That is the thing, Robert. You are coming
:50:50. > :50:54.here and playing against a guy who has won twice, he is in the form of
:50:55. > :51:00.his life, and you don't want to let him get away. Absolutely not. It
:51:01. > :51:03.took me a while to settle down and I wasn't getting close enough, but in
:51:04. > :51:09.the second set I did settle down and got myself into the game. You
:51:10. > :51:15.certainly did. Nick, you just kept on battering away, your link from
:51:16. > :51:18.the start was very good. I know how good a player Robert is, I have
:51:19. > :51:21.played with him a lot, and a lot, and I knew eventually I would be
:51:22. > :51:27.under the pump. I just hope that I could keep him at arms length. He
:51:28. > :51:33.showed in the second set what a good day he is. He forced me into the
:51:34. > :51:36.runner. I knew it was coming, I was just hoping I could hold it off long
:51:37. > :51:41.enough. Nicky Brett looking in pretty
:51:42. > :51:48.impressive form indeed. So all the seeds were through, but could Darren
:51:49. > :51:51.Burnett join them in round two? He realised a lifetime ambition when
:51:52. > :51:59.he picked up the Commonwealth Games home -- medal on home soil. An
:52:00. > :52:04.carpet here in Perth, he has shown he has the game to do some damage.
:52:05. > :52:10.This is a rare appearance for Philip last here, but the bowler from the
:52:11. > :52:15.Ipswich indoor club has lots of experience, and came into this one
:52:16. > :52:19.44th in the world rankings. And the Commonwealth champion started very
:52:20. > :52:26.strongly indeed, and after four ends, was 5-1 ahead.
:52:27. > :52:33.COMMENTATOR: Darren Burnett off to good start. Reached around to only
:52:34. > :52:39.twice in the last ten years in Perth, it hasn't been his favourite
:52:40. > :52:44.tournament. He has been giving Philip Last a shed load of room, but
:52:45. > :52:47.Philip hasn't come onto his game at all. If he does, Darren Burnett
:52:48. > :53:17.could be in trouble. Just missed chance here, the
:53:18. > :53:23.opponent is short. You really need to be within a foot with that first
:53:24. > :53:26.bowl, in a situation like that, because obviously it is a situation
:53:27. > :53:31.where Darren isn't really on top form. He is going to make a
:53:32. > :53:54.correction, which he has done on this bowl.
:53:55. > :54:05.He certainly looks better. APPLAUSE
:54:06. > :54:19.UMPIRE: One green, but it is very close. An inch in front of jack -the
:54:20. > :54:45.green bowl, and three inches in front for your own bowl, Darren.
:54:46. > :54:57.It is important that the markers are precise. And he is there.
:54:58. > :55:09.UMPIRE: One red. He knew that the gap was there.
:55:10. > :55:17.Nicely done. A similar weighted shot from Philip Last might not get the
:55:18. > :55:22.results he wants. I am surprised that, because there was no reason to
:55:23. > :55:29.be short. Any pull off the jack was worth two or three, and the red bowl
:55:30. > :55:44.clean was worth one, possibly two. No need to draw short there. They
:55:45. > :55:48.like to play with the new grip is that they have wrought back, they
:55:49. > :55:51.were on the bowls years ago, that they went out of fashion, and they
:55:52. > :56:05.have come back into fashion again. He would have expected Darren to go
:56:06. > :56:12.behind. I think Darren expected that, too. We are seeing a lot of
:56:13. > :56:18.players dropping short. Is it playing slightly not how they are
:56:19. > :56:25.expecting? I think the back bowl would have been a good dish and the
:56:26. > :56:30.Darren. Identity he intended to be near the jack on that occasion. But
:56:31. > :56:35.I can understand it if something curls down a little, maybe coming
:56:36. > :56:37.in, people moving around on the doors being open, it can affect the
:56:38. > :56:54.pull. This is better. A really good effort. Unlucky.
:56:55. > :56:59.The second set continued in a similar vein, and the 2014 champion
:57:00. > :57:03.was through to the second round with consummate ease.
:57:04. > :57:12.Yes, lots of great games today, lots of great shots. But what was the
:57:13. > :57:17.great shot of the day? My shot of the day was between Robert Elmore
:57:18. > :57:22.and Nick Brett. Robert Elmore was in trouble, but in the second set, he
:57:23. > :57:30.couldn't afford to lose another two, and he plays the most wonderful
:57:31. > :57:31.forehand draw shot, and split two of Nicky's bowls, and suddenly Nicky is
:57:32. > :57:43.in trouble. Let's have a look. There we can see bowl coming in,
:57:44. > :57:46.perfectly weighted. A lot of people would have played the backhand
:57:47. > :57:51.runner, but he drops it in perfectly, rings the score three to
:57:52. > :57:59.5-3, and suddenly he is right back in the second shirt. -- set. And
:58:00. > :58:04.Nicky Brett had to fight all the way through the rest of that set.
:58:05. > :58:09.Yes, a beautiful shot there, but not enough to beat Nicky Brett. He is
:58:10. > :58:10.through to the second round, and here is who else is through with
:58:11. > :58:17.him. Alex Marshall against Greg Harlow,
:58:18. > :58:27.that should be a great game. Nick Brett and Stewart Anderson
:58:28. > :58:33.should also be a fantastic encounter.
:58:34. > :58:41.We will sort those matches out over the next couple of days, tomorrow we
:58:42. > :58:47.will be back for live action at one o'clock. Please join us that if you
:58:48. > :58:52.can, lots of tasty matches in prospect. In the meantime from all
:58:53. > :58:55.of us here at the Dewars Centre, it has been a great day. Do join us
:58:56. > :59:00.tomorrow if you can. Goodbye for now.
:59:01. > :59:04.He's in an exotic land. In the far reaches of northern Europe.
:59:05. > :59:08.A place of unbelievable history, myth and legend.
:59:09. > :59:17...as he discovers a different kind of Ireland.
:59:18. > :59:22.We just want to live in the present and look towards the future.
:59:23. > :59:24.It's an Ireland that I really didn't know.
:59:25. > :59:34.The knives are sharpened and the heat is on. It can only mean one thing.
:59:35. > :59:38.Britain's best chefs are back in town.
:59:39. > :59:43.They're here because they want this title. I'm really excited.
