0:00:30 > 0:00:33When the air turns colder and the trees change colour and the leaves

0:00:33 > 0:00:38fall to the ground, Perth is a beautiful city. But if you want a

0:00:38 > 0:00:41change in temperature, a short walk to the Dewars Centre is the place to

0:00:41 > 0:00:45be because the worlds best bowlers are there and they are turning up

0:00:45 > 0:00:47the heat.

0:00:54 > 0:00:59DRAMATIC MUSIC

0:01:17 > 0:01:21hello and a very warm welcome to the Dewars Centre in Perth for the first

0:01:21 > 0:01:25day of our coverage of the co-operative funeral care Scottish

0:01:25 > 0:01:29International Open where we have highlights of three matches and

0:01:29 > 0:01:33stick around because they are all fantastic. The action got under way

0:01:33 > 0:01:38here on Saturday and here is how the draw looked at the start. We knew

0:01:38 > 0:01:43that Mervyn King was through and Jonathan Ross was knocked out by

0:01:43 > 0:01:51Perry Martin. Stewart Anderson went out to Mike Stepney.

0:01:55 > 0:02:01There were some surprises in the bottom half, Jason Greenslade is out

0:02:01 > 0:02:05but Robert Paxton, David Gourlay, Mark Royal and Nick Brett are all

0:02:05 > 0:02:11through to the second round. Let's turn our attention to the first

0:02:11 > 0:02:15match today which was at one o'clock, Greg Harlow against Neil

0:02:15 > 0:02:20Furman. From the US but learning to play in South Africa, Neil Furman

0:02:20 > 0:02:25plays out of the Laguna Beach indoor club in San Diego and has won nine

0:02:25 > 0:02:31national US titles. Consistent and extremely impressive performances

0:02:31 > 0:02:38from Greg Harlow have put him firmly at world number one. And Harlow

0:02:38 > 0:02:43started strongly, taking the first two ends to build an early 3-0 lead

0:02:43 > 0:02:47and we picked it up with commentary from David Corkill and Paul

0:02:47 > 0:02:48Mitchell.

0:02:51 > 0:02:58COMMENTATOR: Greg Harlow delivers with barely a whisper, a smooth

0:02:58 > 0:03:06delivery.The vast majority of the top players all have very smooth and

0:03:06 > 0:03:11relaxed and easy deliveries and it is very rare you see one of them

0:03:11 > 0:03:22have a bump. Ian Bond of course was one of the few that has managed to

0:03:22 > 0:03:27overcome that and be a top-ranked player and he bumps every bowl but

0:03:27 > 0:03:34it makes no difference if you do that.Ian Bond a former winner of

0:03:34 > 0:03:40this tournament, winning it twice. He has taken a rest from the tour

0:03:40 > 0:03:44events, hopefully he will come back. The good character and a really good

0:03:44 > 0:03:48player.

0:03:53 > 0:04:02That is better from Greg.By his standards the first two ends were a

0:04:02 > 0:04:06bit loose but that is more like it.

0:04:18 > 0:04:30I think it is just going to go past but not much. A lot of people might

0:04:30 > 0:04:33have think that Greg would have played the forehand to try to turn

0:04:33 > 0:04:39the jack in round the corner but on the portable rink, if you get a

0:04:39 > 0:04:42couple closed then you'd stay on that hand. This needs to hurry a

0:04:42 > 0:04:53bit. It would have been very useful if it missed that bowl.Enough to

0:04:53 > 0:05:03put the pressure on his opponent. He played in the beautiful surroundings

0:05:03 > 0:05:14of Laguna Beach in San Diego.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16of Laguna Beach in San Diego. It is trying its best to get there but the

0:05:16 > 0:05:22difficulty for meal is that the target bowls are protected by his

0:05:22 > 0:05:29own Green one -- for Neil. He does not have much in terms of playing

0:05:29 > 0:05:35heavy to get out of trouble which is a strength of his game but Greg can

0:05:35 > 0:05:43concentrate on trying to put bowls close to the jack. He is looking

0:05:43 > 0:05:48good again for another shot. Just wants to drift past and he has made

0:05:48 > 0:05:57it. It was just a draw here and it's not pretty because you try to make

0:05:57 > 0:06:02sure you're reaching on the forehand and it's just holds off. If you nip

0:06:02 > 0:06:05it in a bit it will hook across very quickly.

0:06:07 > 0:06:17Ten seconds on the shot clock. Is he trying to hit this? He is.He is

0:06:17 > 0:06:24going to have to be fortunate here to push something through.Well...

0:06:24 > 0:06:30The follow-through was the key to that. Rather fortuitous to come

0:06:30 > 0:06:41through onto the jack.He gambled there.It is a strength of his to

0:06:41 > 0:06:44play the weight shot, it is usually something he is pretty accurate

0:06:44 > 0:06:54with.He was looking at being 7-0 down, 4-0 is bad enough.STUDIO:

0:06:54 > 0:06:59Harlow went on to win the next four ends, shutting out Furman from the

0:06:59 > 0:07:06first set to take it 9-0 and we rejoin it with Furman leading 5-0

0:07:06 > 0:07:09having taken the first four ends.

0:07:29 > 0:07:36COMMENTATOR: All credit to Neil Furman. The first set was one he

0:07:36 > 0:07:40might want to forget about but he has used it as a practice set and he

0:07:40 > 0:07:46has come out very strong in the second. The first bowl has had a

0:07:46 > 0:07:48massive improvement.

0:08:32 > 0:08:38Normally Greg would attack this on the backhand and just play the two

0:08:38 > 0:08:46bowls off but he has been very conservative in this match. He will

0:08:46 > 0:08:58have to come the forehand. It's got a chance. A big chance for the jack.

0:08:58 > 0:09:09Well... Unlucky really. He wanted to move that green bowl further away.

0:09:09 > 0:09:22Now, Neil, you have to go with the forehand. You can ignore the jack

0:09:22 > 0:09:28here, it is the two red bowls he wants to come into contact with.He

0:09:28 > 0:09:31played the previous one on the forehand so he knows the line to

0:09:31 > 0:09:48take.It's not going to do much help there. Greg Harlow with a little

0:09:48 > 0:09:52turn of the green bowl away.

0:10:11 > 0:10:17He is fighting it with the weight. Did he just overplay it? No, he got

0:10:17 > 0:10:24it.Even less weight than what I thought to be honest.It is a

0:10:24 > 0:10:29brilliant turnaround. He stopped halfway down the rink to look, he

0:10:29 > 0:10:40had a feeling he had done it right and he had. Will you just draw it or

0:10:40 > 0:10:43think about driving on the forehand?

0:10:48 > 0:10:57Playing to disturb... Never gave it a chance. I know that sounds harsh

0:10:57 > 0:11:02but you could see almost immediately he had started it too tight. The

0:11:02 > 0:11:08forehand drive gone wrong, losing three and maybe four and all of a

0:11:08 > 0:11:12sudden that lead disappears.

0:11:29 > 0:11:39This is Greg Harlow for four. He has kept it very wide, didn't want to

0:11:39 > 0:11:43mess with the green bowls at the front. He has dropped its down, he

0:11:43 > 0:11:48would normally have added that.A little miss but he is on the card

0:11:48 > 0:11:53and back competitive in this second set and it will be interesting to

0:11:53 > 0:12:00see what Greg Harlow does with the length of the white.STUDIO: The

0:12:00 > 0:12:04players traded singles in the next two ends and we picked it up again

0:12:04 > 0:12:09in the eighth with Furman winning 6-4.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28COMMENTATOR: The winner of this match will play Mervyn King and that

0:12:28 > 0:12:36will be interesting.Such a good, steady player, Mervyn King.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47He came through against Martin Head of South Africa without too many

0:12:47 > 0:12:50troubles.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57Just under two feet.

0:13:09 > 0:13:15Greg, a minimum of one required but obviously we would like to make it

0:13:15 > 0:13:21multiples. Having said that, even if he scores a two, he still needs to

0:13:21 > 0:13:30win the last end unless it is a no score!Just in case!Just in case

0:13:30 > 0:13:34anybody is thinking at home that we're not quite right! There is

0:13:34 > 0:13:44always that possibility. And the bowlers do like to be accurate.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48Loose opening bowl from Neil Furman, he needs to correct. And he needs

0:13:48 > 0:13:54help with this one, a big gap and there it goes. Not a bad position,

0:13:54 > 0:14:02though. But again, he doesn't want to lose three or four.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16That looked good as well from backhand and round it comes once

0:14:16 > 0:14:24more. -- from the hand.

0:14:37 > 0:14:47Here comes the weight. Takes the jack and it will go out and be on

0:14:47 > 0:14:53the re-spot.

0:14:56 > 0:15:02The bowls are being picked up and now the jack will be picked up and

0:15:02 > 0:15:06you will see where it is put because it has gone off the side of the

0:15:06 > 0:15:16rink.It is one to green and that is very beatable.

0:15:21 > 0:15:26Greg knows he needs this one in because he can't afford to drop

0:15:26 > 0:15:31short on it.

0:15:32 > 0:15:38Good enough.

0:15:41 > 0:15:49The only thing about being short, any tap of the jack makes a double.

0:15:49 > 0:16:01It would make such a difference. Neil Furman, final bowl of the end.

0:16:01 > 0:16:08He has given a go at this and he's not far away from the jack. He's got

0:16:08 > 0:16:18it. He's middled it. What a recovery! APPLAUSE

0:16:18 > 0:16:23Barring disaster, this will go to a tie-break because it is a four shot

0:16:23 > 0:16:27lead going into the final end.

0:16:29 > 0:16:36STUDIO: A single in the next end gave Furman the second set and in

0:16:36 > 0:16:40the tie-break Harlow took the first end with Furman taking the second

0:16:40 > 0:16:46and we join it for the third and final end of this intriguing match.

0:16:49 > 0:16:59COMMENTATOR: The last thing he wants is something short and in the way.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03In a tie-break situation like this, this is the only end where you can

0:17:03 > 0:17:10nominate to destroy the end and Neil's driving has been key in this

0:17:10 > 0:17:17match and the last thing he wanted was to be down the rink.Greg Harlow

0:17:17 > 0:17:24knows this is a golden chance. He can really put the pressure on. That

0:17:24 > 0:17:34is a good opener, a really good opener.It could be very valuable,

0:17:34 > 0:17:41touching the jack, it stopped him going across the head a bit. Early

0:17:41 > 0:17:47days but I have seen these being hit, jack in the ditch. That is

0:17:47 > 0:17:56where he is going. He wants the jack. The bowl was the second

0:17:56 > 0:18:00option. Greg will put it back. I think Neil would have reckoned he

0:18:00 > 0:18:10was very close to the jack there. Some shot and he has also lifted the

0:18:10 > 0:18:19touch off the rink and that will take no further part -- the toucher.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28There is the replacement, centre rink is what he is looking for and

0:18:28 > 0:18:40he does not want to drift. That is an even narrower target.

0:18:45 > 0:18:51The thought process, does he go again, does he try to draw?

0:18:51 > 0:18:57Controlled weight inside would not do any harm. Once he gets inside his

0:18:57 > 0:19:00own bowl with controlled weight he is going to be very close to

0:19:00 > 0:19:06something.He has taken the time out. That gives him an extra 60

0:19:06 > 0:19:13seconds to think about this one.It is definitely worth playing inside,

0:19:13 > 0:19:17in a tie-break you have to be aggressive.

0:19:24 > 0:19:36He is going for it again.Just missed the line.If you are Greg

0:19:36 > 0:19:40Harlow do you leave it alone and go to the back?He has got the last

0:19:40 > 0:19:50bowl, I would leave it because he has so much room, that if Neil is to

0:19:50 > 0:19:56go again and gets the bowl, Greg will easily draw with his last one.

0:19:56 > 0:20:02I can see what he is thinking of.He is going to call time-out.He wants

0:20:02 > 0:20:11to put another one in, even centreline. But then you're taking a

0:20:11 > 0:20:15risk on Neil drawing the shot and whilst the odds are against it, it

0:20:15 > 0:20:22is always a possibility. Or the alternative is to go deep so if the

0:20:22 > 0:20:27jack does go in the ditch you still lie.

0:20:33 > 0:20:39It a thrilling end to the match. It's a thinking game at this stage,

0:20:39 > 0:20:43no doubt about that.

0:20:48 > 0:20:52David Gourlay they're watching with interest.

0:21:00 > 0:21:12Off the forehand, very wide.He is covering both deep and the re-spot.

0:21:12 > 0:21:17It is a default shot in many ways, if you're not really quite sure

0:21:17 > 0:21:20where the best position is with regards to your opponent and what

0:21:20 > 0:21:25they are going to play, go deep. There is always the chance of the

0:21:25 > 0:21:32bowl going on to the jack and running through.Time-out called.

0:21:32 > 0:21:36It's a good point, it's hard to go back to a drawing quake having two

0:21:36 > 0:21:44drives.I think he will go for it again.-- drawing weight.I would

0:21:44 > 0:21:50try to get to the jack clean.

0:21:55 > 0:22:02It is about big moments and big shots and this is a big moment. Can

0:22:02 > 0:22:09Neil Furman find the big shot required? Is he too wide? It looks

0:22:09 > 0:22:15wide to me. I think Greg has managed to get through this one.Greg Harlow

0:22:15 > 0:22:22has survived and I don't think that is being unkind, survived an

0:22:22 > 0:22:26exceptionally good second set from Neil Furman who played a very good

0:22:26 > 0:22:30tie-break. The defending champion gets his way past the American, Neil

0:22:30 > 0:22:32Furman.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34gets his way past the American, Neil Furman. That is a relieved Greg

0:22:34 > 0:22:40Harlow with me now. That was hard work but you are through.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44Absolutely, I started well in the first step and played well and Neil

0:22:44 > 0:22:48came back really strong and deserves the second set and it is matchplay

0:22:48 > 0:22:52bowls, obviously tie-breaks can go either way and fortunately I could

0:22:52 > 0:22:56scrape through today.A tough game but that first set in particular he

0:22:56 > 0:23:00was flying away from you but you got your line and length sorted in the

0:23:00 > 0:23:06second.I started off a bit scrappy and Greg was hot right from the go

0:23:06 > 0:23:11and I realised after about five or six ends that the set was gone so I

0:23:11 > 0:23:16try to calm down for the second set. And the tie-break is anyone's going.

0:23:16 > 0:23:21I put myself under pressure in the third end by dropping a short bowl

0:23:21 > 0:23:26and could not see a clean jack, he played two really good shots when I

0:23:26 > 0:23:31took the one out. He played very well and he is very hard to beat.

0:23:31 > 0:23:35That was a really good win for Greg Harlow who was in the final here

0:23:35 > 0:23:39last year against Paul Foster who was also in action today, this time

0:23:39 > 0:23:44against Chris Gale. Chris played out of the Heaton Park club in

0:23:44 > 0:23:48Manchester and was relishing the prospect of going toe to toe with

0:23:48 > 0:23:51the current world champion but the Englishman was carrying an injured

0:23:51 > 0:23:58leg is at the match was even tougher. Having not been at the top

0:23:58 > 0:24:01six in the world for the past 16 years, that tells you all you need

0:24:01 > 0:24:05to know about Paul Foster, strong and tenacious and fiercely

0:24:05 > 0:24:11competitive. We join it in the fourth end with leading 2-1.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18COMMENTATOR: They met in round one last season and Paul Foster

0:24:18 > 0:24:29triumphed. The first set did not take too long, seven ends but the

0:24:29 > 0:24:38second set, eight ends, 7-3. Chris Gale is a very, very good player. He

0:24:38 > 0:24:46played in a lot of competitions. He is an international standard player,

0:24:46 > 0:24:50plays a lot of qualifiers and goes over to Belfast on a regular basis

0:24:50 > 0:24:54to play in them as well.

0:25:39 > 0:25:48He is all over it. APPLAUSE Great correction.

0:25:55 > 0:26:06A very calm player, Chris Gale. When you are playing a world champion,

0:26:06 > 0:26:11you have got to try to stay calm and play your shots and at the moment he

0:26:11 > 0:26:17is lying one.

0:26:38 > 0:26:43He is worried he is going to touch this away and you could see it early

0:26:43 > 0:26:52and he might well have done. One green. It's just held on. He put his

0:26:52 > 0:26:57hand out very early, realising that he was going to play onto his own.

0:27:00 > 0:27:08Paul Foster on the back and looking for a little touch on the jack. It's

0:27:08 > 0:27:19not going to get there.Just six inches away from the perfect bowl.

0:27:19 > 0:27:28Not really a spare shot opportunity, however, if he comes off the red he

0:27:28 > 0:27:36could tuck the jack around the corner and make a three. Just needs

0:27:36 > 0:27:45to get into the split between the red and the jack. Well played.

0:27:45 > 0:27:54Brilliant straw. -- brilliant draw. Some players might have left it

0:27:54 > 0:28:02alone but he had confidence. And beautifully done.It was a good shot

0:28:02 > 0:28:09and not easy but certainly the right shot to play.A good start for Chris

0:28:09 > 0:28:14Gale. He plays out of Blackpool, Newton Hall.

0:28:35 > 0:28:40It will be interesting, given the injury that he has had, once all is

0:28:40 > 0:28:44healed and well, whether his football career will come to a halt.

0:28:44 > 0:28:50LAUGHTER I think maybe Korea is a bit

0:28:50 > 0:28:56generous, Paul! But he is out there kicking the ball, and that's great.

0:28:56 > 0:29:00It counts as a career! It doesn't matter if you make it at the top

0:29:00 > 0:29:05level.I think he might have to have serious thoughts about giving it up,

0:29:05 > 0:29:08you know. It's hard enough to take one Paul Foster when you are fully

0:29:08 > 0:29:18fit. But it's a monumental task. So, he's doing well.

0:29:26 > 0:29:32Chris Gale's club hosted an international open. He was always a

0:29:32 > 0:29:36difficult competitor when he qualifies for that.

0:30:07 > 0:30:12And adjustment has been made. APPLAUSE

0:30:26 > 0:30:32A snap of the fingers.Yes.He knows there's something... I don't think

0:30:32 > 0:30:44the line is too bad.Well, it's not a bad thing when you know from the

0:30:44 > 0:30:47mat...It is either that or he was just over the line from the yard

0:30:47 > 0:30:54shot. He was attempting to move the jack. He was certainly in a good

0:30:54 > 0:31:02position to do that. APPLAUSE

0:31:02 > 0:31:06He will be looking for that ball just to drop. It could be two

0:31:06 > 0:31:15anyway.Three inches past jack with a gap of three inches.

0:31:32 > 0:31:40It looked a better line. Of, he just got the wrong side. I was going to

0:31:40 > 0:31:44say it might just hold up, but his own green ballpoints back under the

0:31:44 > 0:31:49red and tapped them out. Definite two, possible three he could lose in

0:31:49 > 0:31:50this end.

0:31:58 > 0:32:03Paul Foster felt he was on the same line and wanted the results.

0:32:03 > 0:32:07APPLAUSE He had his hand held out there, but

0:32:07 > 0:32:12it still looked good all the way.He probably thought it was not coming

0:32:12 > 0:32:20back. But in it came. And it is a three for the Scot.Well, no mercy

0:32:20 > 0:32:27in that one. Foster used the momentum, winning the next three

0:32:27 > 0:32:32ends and taking the first set 9-4. He continued to turn the screw in

0:32:32 > 0:32:37the second set. When we rejoin it, he has a 4-1 lead going into end

0:32:37 > 0:32:39five.

0:32:50 > 0:32:54And the problems sometimes can be that you can throw yourself of your

0:32:54 > 0:33:05weight. -- yourself off your weight. Decent start, though.Yes, you know,

0:33:05 > 0:33:09if you are two or three yards through, Paul Foster turns his back

0:33:09 > 0:33:14on that.He's not doing bad, though.

0:33:19 > 0:33:25The green ball is two feed. Paul is just inside that. -- two feed.

0:33:34 > 0:33:42It look so pretty generous two feet though. It certainly does.

0:34:03 > 0:34:07Yes, the white marker that was on your screen just disappears a metre

0:34:07 > 0:34:11away from the jack and the Red Bull, it must have been in the middle of

0:34:11 > 0:34:15it. -- and the red ball.

0:34:30 > 0:34:36Turned the ball over. Not quite.

0:34:43 > 0:34:49It has just slid the green ball enough to make it second.

0:34:59 > 0:35:04He'd like to add a little bit of pressure here by joining another.

0:35:04 > 0:35:09It's good enough. APPLAUSE

0:35:09 > 0:35:14Close for the third one, that would suggest. Paul Foster is having a

0:35:14 > 0:35:24real good look at it.The ball is now moved back, there is now three

0:35:24 > 0:35:34red. The white indicating a time-out --indicating a time-out. It's worth

0:35:34 > 0:35:44another look.Chris has three time-outs remaining.The time-out

0:35:44 > 0:35:52call. I was thinking, take the time. But he has potentially three against

0:35:52 > 0:35:55him the. They are driving the backhand. Trying to take something

0:35:55 > 0:36:03out, seeing what results you can get. It's not the best result, is

0:36:03 > 0:36:10it?No, it's not. It could still be two red with a ball to play, it

0:36:10 > 0:36:14depends.It's one of the days where I don't think it's a toucher, that

0:36:14 > 0:36:21will go. The jack has been moved. Two red and a mountain of room for

0:36:21 > 0:36:29Paul Foster to draw another. So it's going to be three red, 7-1.I think

0:36:29 > 0:36:35even Paul Mitchell could draw that. Let's not stress the point, I don't

0:36:35 > 0:36:39think, Paul!We have to keep our skills are pit stop your absolutely!

0:36:39 > 0:36:43We are going to be down there soon enough. If somebody gives you five

0:36:43 > 0:36:48yards to draw, I'd like to think I could do it. I'm not sure I could

0:36:48 > 0:36:53always do so. But Paul Foster, as I said, absolutely no problem. Now,

0:36:53 > 0:37:02that's a big swig of the match, Paul Foster really in control. And that

0:37:02 > 0:37:04was good enough to give foster an unassailable lead, eventually taking

0:37:04 > 0:37:12the match 9-4, 8-3. Paul, the three threes good, good to get the play

0:37:12 > 0:37:18out of the way?I know Chris is a good player, but there is a lot of

0:37:18 > 0:37:21pressure on the first round match. You hope that you play well enough

0:37:21 > 0:37:24to get through the first round match.Chris, I know you were not a

0:37:24 > 0:37:32man to make excuses, but how tough is it playing with a dodgy leg?It

0:37:32 > 0:37:36is tough at the best of times playing ball, but with a dodgy leg

0:37:36 > 0:37:40it is even harder. The white Paul Foster, such a great player on the

0:37:40 > 0:37:44portablerink, but he's pretty good outside

0:37:44 > 0:37:47portablerink, but he's pretty good outside as well on the grass. He has

0:37:47 > 0:37:52won so many medals, often with his good friend, Alex Marshall. He was

0:37:52 > 0:37:58in action here today as well pretty tricky customer, David Bolt. A fine

0:37:58 > 0:38:05player inside and out, David won his first national singles title in

0:38:05 > 0:38:072011, the same year he joined

0:38:07 > 0:38:08first national singles title in 2011, the same year he joined the

0:38:08 > 0:38:10English senior international team. Alex Marshall is quite simply the

0:38:10 > 0:38:14best that has ever been on the portable rink. When it really

0:38:14 > 0:38:16matters at the World Championships, Alex has lifted

0:38:16 > 0:38:19matters at the World Championships, Alex has lifted the Trophy seven

0:38:19 > 0:38:23times, more than any other bowl. Marshall got off to a great start

0:38:23 > 0:38:28with a full house in the second end, and stormed into an early 4-1 lead.

0:38:28 > 0:38:33The two players traded singles over the next four ends. We join it in

0:38:33 > 0:38:36the second end with Marshall leading 6-3.

0:39:03 > 0:39:07The venue here in Perth is built over the drinks of the indoor club

0:39:07 > 0:39:14here in Perth. All very carefully looked after and protected.

0:39:23 > 0:39:27It's all part of the game, to overcome the difficulties on the

0:39:27 > 0:39:34brink. That's where the vast experience of the top-ranked players

0:39:34 > 0:39:36come into play -- difficulties on the brink.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44It's perfect. APPLAUSE

0:39:49 > 0:39:55One red. There is a slight gap.

0:40:12 > 0:40:19Just got a chance with this one. Beautifully inside the red one, just

0:40:19 > 0:40:30cutting.Good ball, squeezes the jack, that's where it's going.It is

0:40:30 > 0:40:33six inches short of jack Hite. Wouldn't like that much, but he's

0:40:33 > 0:40:38got to be careful about the wait to come off it. He would prefer it to

0:40:38 > 0:40:44be six inches through the jack. -- the weak to come off it. -- for

0:40:44 > 0:40:45weight.

0:40:50 > 0:40:58Might just falls a little bit more weight. -- just force.

0:41:04 > 0:41:11A weighted shot. He's going under, but he might get a result of his

0:41:11 > 0:41:16own. Oh, no! That's horrible. That is a shocking result, absolutely

0:41:16 > 0:41:22shocking. It really is. Dear, oh dear. I can understand him taking

0:41:22 > 0:41:27one out, but it was very unlucky for everything to disappear.Watch this,

0:41:27 > 0:41:30green on to green, and he didn't even touch the red ball at the

0:41:30 > 0:41:34front. He does have one ball to play, but it will be four against

0:41:34 > 0:41:42him when he comes to play it. That was like these old trick snooker

0:41:42 > 0:41:46shots that John Virgo used to do, I'm going to do this, this and this

0:41:46 > 0:41:52and I'm going to leave, you know... Almost impossible. But not quite.

0:41:52 > 0:41:57APPLAUSE As you would expect from Alex,

0:41:57 > 0:42:04absolutely no mercy. At this stage, at 6-3 in the southern end, he has

0:42:04 > 0:42:09to go for this. You know, it's so hard to join in, even for third

0:42:09 > 0:42:17ball, surely he has to run at it -- in the seventh end. In it goes.

0:42:17 > 0:42:23Played it.Oh, and played it well. Toucher in the ditch, green ball at

0:42:23 > 0:42:27the back. He's going to lift up a couple here.The eight a massive

0:42:27 > 0:42:35Paul!Well, that is certainly among the shots of the days ago the eight

0:42:35 > 0:42:39ball, a massive Paul! He was all but out of the set, trusted to drive.

0:42:39 > 0:42:47And a good result.Bolt won the next end, which made it 6-6, as we head

0:42:47 > 0:42:50back for the last end of the first set.

0:43:06 > 0:43:09APPLAUSE

0:43:14 > 0:43:19It is three inches past. Three inches past.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29He usually prefers the backhand going in this direction, but he

0:43:29 > 0:43:35knows that at three inches past, well, it's his choice, bowl or jack.

0:43:35 > 0:43:41A bit of work to do to get back to the jack.It was a brave shot. Early

0:43:41 > 0:43:46in the rink. Giving it a go. And he stayed on, which is to his benefit

0:43:46 > 0:43:48as well.

0:43:51 > 0:43:58So you're playing this end almost like a tie-break and -- end. It

0:43:58 > 0:44:02doesn't matter if you lose four, just get one. That's all that you

0:44:02 > 0:44:10want. He'll get back to the draw now. And his favourite backhand as

0:44:10 > 0:44:11well.

0:44:20 > 0:44:24This is an important bowl, it could put all of the pressure back on to

0:44:24 > 0:44:30David Bolt.He has played it well. One red.

0:44:38 > 0:44:41He has to find another good one.

0:44:45 > 0:44:50A lot of work to do to get back from that line. It just didn't look

0:44:50 > 0:44:58right. It wasn't too far-away, actually.Eight inches short of the

0:44:58 > 0:45:05jacks, and the gap is six.Half awake, and it might have carried.

0:45:05 > 0:45:13Alex Marshall, his opponent has want to play once this comes to a rest.

0:45:13 > 0:45:24-- has one to play. Two red.Well, it is certainly worth arriving down

0:45:24 > 0:45:32at it.18 inches short of jack Hite. It is a deep Greg ball. He has to

0:45:32 > 0:45:37give this a chance to get into his own. Slightly different line this

0:45:37 > 0:45:45time. Definitely on the inside. He has got a chance of getting his own

0:45:45 > 0:45:50ball over, coming off at an angle. Could take the prize with him. Not

0:45:50 > 0:46:03an easy shot to play, that one. That's a great ball. In he came.

0:46:03 > 0:46:08That's a hard shot, it really is a hard shot. But it is a set live

0:46:08 > 0:46:15against Alex Marshall. And it's not a given in this one -- it is a set

0:46:15 > 0:46:20lie against Alex Marshall. This is tough. A smooth delivery of Alex

0:46:20 > 0:46:31Marshall. It has never changed. It starts to work back now. Just not

0:46:31 > 0:46:38coming in.It just didn't break.Two shots in the first set to David

0:46:38 > 0:46:44Bolt.Well, David Bowie takes the set. I think Alex Marshall expected

0:46:44 > 0:46:51that to break up and faster than it did -- David Galt. He built an early

0:46:51 > 0:46:56three shot lead in the second, but Marshall fought back with seven

0:46:56 > 0:47:00shots in the space of three ends. When we rejoin committee is leading

0:47:00 > 0:47:078-4 going into the eighth end. -- when we rejoin, he is leading.

0:47:15 > 0:47:20He has certainly found the road down with this one.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23APPLAUSE

0:47:42 > 0:47:46Wants to take it with him. APPLAUSE

0:47:54 > 0:48:00One of these situations that looks awful from the mat, but Alex

0:48:00 > 0:48:03Marshall knows there's space there.

0:48:08 > 0:48:11Oh, there's a chance now.

0:48:17 > 0:48:23Any sort of chance where he has to score a double.

0:48:28 > 0:48:34One shot would be enough for Alex. To take the set, going into the

0:48:34 > 0:48:36tie-break.

0:48:54 > 0:49:01Made the adjustments. APPLAUSE

0:49:01 > 0:49:07A really good bowl and a lot of pressure. -- under a lot of

0:49:07 > 0:49:14pressure.4.5 inches under jack Hite. One down.

0:49:25 > 0:49:30He is asking a lot for this to get back.

0:49:34 > 0:49:38And there is the ball falling as well.

0:49:59 > 0:50:04Alex Marshall has got three time-outs left available to him. He

0:50:04 > 0:50:07won't need one here.

0:50:12 > 0:50:18Looking to play this wide. Cover every spot just in case.Well, even

0:50:18 > 0:50:21going deeper than that, Paul. Because the front plant is pushing

0:50:21 > 0:50:25the jack all the way through with the touching green ball. Now, for

0:50:25 > 0:50:29that ball to continue all the way with it I think it might have to be

0:50:29 > 0:50:33a bit fortunate, but it's well worth the effort. There's no backhand for

0:50:33 > 0:50:40now. -- no backhand draw now.

0:50:47 > 0:50:51Again, a time-out will be called. David has three time-outs remaining.

0:50:51 > 0:50:56If he's looking at this the way I think you should be, he should be

0:50:56 > 0:50:59looking at hitting that ball. The green ball will go through and the

0:50:59 > 0:51:04jack will move, but the back red one that the jack has played, that could

0:51:04 > 0:51:08be sufficient to stop everything. It was a clever ball. That's what he's

0:51:08 > 0:51:14looking for. He's looking for the front plant.

0:51:16 > 0:51:24Oh, dear!Well, you don't see it often, but it does happen. It's two

0:51:24 > 0:51:31shots to Alex Marshall. Into the tie-break, then. Marshall won the

0:51:31 > 0:51:34first end in the best-of-3.

0:51:50 > 0:51:57APPLAUSE Well, will Alex take the risk of

0:51:57 > 0:52:05running the ball? Not if he's on the backhand, you won't. Just drawing

0:52:05 > 0:52:06it.

0:52:14 > 0:52:18He has backed himself on that backhand all afternoon. But that

0:52:18 > 0:52:21looked a little lazy.

0:52:40 > 0:52:43Two inches.

0:52:48 > 0:52:55The question is, does he have a go? He has to go now. Just try and clear

0:52:55 > 0:52:58things up a bit.

0:53:01 > 0:53:10Very close, got a chance. APPLAUSE

0:53:10 > 0:53:16The touch-up went in the ditch, but Alex's ball has rolled on, and it's

0:53:16 > 0:53:23also a Tuchel. The question is, who is lining the shot? -- also a

0:53:23 > 0:53:29toucher.Struck it well, got the jack, that's why it is a toucher. I

0:53:29 > 0:53:35think he has...It's not going to be easy to beat, this one. That is why

0:53:35 > 0:53:39David is an beforehand. Having said that, the backhand does hold a lot.

0:53:39 > 0:53:44He's going to have two encourage this one to be up.That looks lazy.

0:54:06 > 0:54:11Puts the ball down, reset, restart. Plenty of time on the clock. It's

0:54:11 > 0:54:19now down to seven. Time-out called. There's something catching. There is

0:54:19 > 0:54:29something catching Alex Marshall's I. -- Alex Marshall's I.

0:54:49 > 0:54:59So, Alex Marshall, he just takes his time. It's a key moment. He has

0:54:59 > 0:55:06lined the shot. That's what I was saying about this backhand, earlier

0:55:06 > 0:55:10in the game Alex played it wide and it didn't come back. So there is a

0:55:10 > 0:55:16Cole there. He knows he can get to it. -- a hole. He knows he's played

0:55:16 > 0:55:21this one well. He has to follow that. I think when you can afford

0:55:21 > 0:55:30the risk of the forehand.Your last bowl is nearly two feet, two yards,

0:55:30 > 0:55:40sorry.Well, this line has to be so good. He has to miss a lot of debris

0:55:40 > 0:55:44at the front. He has certainly pushed this one, no doubt about

0:55:44 > 0:55:52that. It is his own bowl I'm thinking of.That looked like he'd

0:55:52 > 0:55:58played that far too heavy. APPLAUSE

0:55:58 > 0:56:05Alex Marshall comes through the tie-break. And it was a particularly

0:56:05 > 0:56:09entertaining game. And David Bolt gave it all. Alex Marshall lifting

0:56:09 > 0:56:13the jack into the ditch was the key in the tie-break. And Alex Marshall

0:56:13 > 0:56:20goes through by 2-1.Alex, I would imagine after that you will be very

0:56:20 > 0:56:25happy to be through?Definitely. You know, the first set I dominated it a

0:56:25 > 0:56:29lot of times. I think it was the second last in the first set, I

0:56:29 > 0:56:33should never have been near as close, I was trying to be two feet,

0:56:33 > 0:56:37two yard behind, I set it up nice to David, and credit to him.He played

0:56:37 > 0:56:42very well at the start but you were playing well as well. You took eight

0:56:42 > 0:56:46of the first 11 ends in the match, you played remarkably well. That

0:56:46 > 0:56:51surprises us to be honest because I thought I was a little bit in and

0:56:51 > 0:56:54out for the first good two thirds of the first set. I was continually

0:56:54 > 0:56:57just putting a little bit tight, but obviously just trying to hang in

0:56:57 > 0:57:01with Alex. Maybe the last three ends of the first set I started to string

0:57:01 > 0:57:06a few bones together and put Alex and others but of pressure.Tatty

0:57:06 > 0:57:09through, and the second round looks like this.

0:57:26 > 0:57:33So, today here at the Dewars Centre we have seen some wonderful play and

0:57:33 > 0:57:40wonderful shots. But which one is the best? Here is corky to tell us.

0:57:40 > 0:57:44My shot of the day comes from the match Alex Marshall and David Bull.

0:57:44 > 0:57:48It was a good game, but Alex Marshall was in control in the first

0:57:48 > 0:57:54set. He was 6-3 up and for shots, a set of effectively, and we were in a

0:57:54 > 0:57:58situation when David Bolt had one ball left and he had to make this

0:57:58 > 0:58:03short work of the ways the first set was gone. Let's see what happens. --

0:58:03 > 0:58:11otherwise the first set was gone. On beforehand, full outdrive, it -- on

0:58:11 > 0:58:15beforehand, a full outdrive. The torture goes in, the Red ball

0:58:15 > 0:58:20disappears, and David Galt had a green ball back there. He scores a

0:58:20 > 0:58:26double, that takes him to 6-5, and then of course he went on and won

0:58:26 > 0:58:29the first set, guaranteed a tie-break against the six times

0:58:29 > 0:58:34world champion. And that's why it was my shot of the day.We will be

0:58:34 > 0:58:38back for the second-round action on BBC Two Scotland. It all gets

0:58:38 > 0:58:42underway at 1pm tomorrow. Please join us for that if you can. If

0:58:42 > 0:58:50today is anything to go by, it's going to be another wonderful day.

0:58:50 > 0:58:52The meantime, from all of us here at the Dewars Centre impasse,
