:00:41. > :00:48.Into the final week of the 2014 World Indoor Championships and two
:00:49. > :00:59.trophies have been won. Paul Foster and Alex Marshall succumbed to their
:01:00. > :01:17.rivals in the a mixed pairs. Yes, welcome to Potters. Two titles
:01:18. > :01:21.won. To still more are still up for grabs and this afternoon we have got
:01:22. > :01:26.action from both competitions and first up, a men's singles match
:01:27. > :01:33.featuring a Commonwealth and world champion who had to battle hard to
:01:34. > :01:37.make it through the first round. The first game was a big game for
:01:38. > :01:42.me. It was a game I had to win really. I was happy with the form. I
:01:43. > :01:47.played some good bowls there. I'm looking forward to the next game
:01:48. > :01:51.now. It is a tough draw and it is a tough game. Stewart Anderson played
:01:52. > :01:58.really well in the first game as well. It probably doesn't get much
:01:59. > :02:01.tougher. Stewart has a great all-round game, but his drawing to
:02:02. > :02:10.the jack. He seems to get a lot of bowls around the jack and put
:02:11. > :02:14.pressure on the opponent. I find myself enjoying the games under
:02:15. > :02:18.pressure. I will maybe play a few drives and see what happens.
:02:19. > :02:22.APPLAUSE It has probably been too long since
:02:23. > :02:32.Wales lifted this trophy. Last time it was myself in 2000. Hopefully one
:02:33. > :02:36.of us can do it this year. We have great memories and a long time ago,
:02:37. > :02:41.but I have kept my form over the years and form is temporary
:02:42. > :02:49.probably, but the class is there. I still think I can do it and
:02:50. > :02:55.hopefully I'm going to prove that. Well, to prove it, he is up against
:02:56. > :02:58.none other than the defending champion, Stewart Anderson is
:02:59. > :03:05.standing in the way of Robert Weale in the last 16 match. I have been
:03:06. > :03:08.joined by John Price. Another former Welsh world champion. Stewart
:03:09. > :03:13.Anderson has come into this tournament as the defending
:03:14. > :03:18.champion. The last two defending champions went out in the first
:03:19. > :03:21.round? Yes, he will be relieved by that. Today's opponent is very
:03:22. > :03:24.experienced so he needs to go up a level and I expect to see a tough
:03:25. > :03:27.match. About today's opponent, Rob, you
:03:28. > :03:32.know Rob very well. He hasn't been at his best. He had that injury
:03:33. > :03:39.playing skittles which set him back. How much did that first round win
:03:40. > :03:44.give him a boost? A dangerous game skittles. He is back to his best. He
:03:45. > :03:48.will get a lot of confidence and he has been here and done it before and
:03:49. > :03:51.he is a top player. You are going to be in the commentary box this
:03:52. > :03:55.afternoon. Who is going to come out on top? Well, that's unfair with a
:03:56. > :04:00.Welshman there. It will be close. It could go one set to a tie-break.
:04:01. > :04:05.Because I'm Welsh I'm going to favour Robert. No surprise there!
:04:06. > :04:13.Thank you, John, I will let you go up to the commentary box. Robert
:04:14. > :04:55.Weale is up against Stewart Anderson.
:04:56. > :05:01.Stewart Anderson. APPLAUSE
:05:02. > :05:05.Well, yes, it is time to meet the players and after winning countless
:05:06. > :05:10.Commonwealth Games gold medals, it is no wonder why our first player is
:05:11. > :05:16.rated as one of the best in the sport. Ladies and gentlemen, former
:05:17. > :05:27.World Indoor Singles Champion. Give it up for Robert Weale.
:05:28. > :05:48.And Robert takes on twice world under 25s and the defending World
:05:49. > :05:59.Indoor Singles Champion, ladies and gentlemen, it's Stewart Anderson.
:06:00. > :06:23.Well, this a cracking match and John Price has printed up into the
:06:24. > :06:33.commentary box. I will give John a moment or two to
:06:34. > :06:38.get his breath. He is not as fit as he used to be. He is panting away.
:06:39. > :06:42.He needs a little drink. You will be OK in a moment, John. We're really
:06:43. > :06:55.looking forward to this. Robert Weale hovering at the top end, top
:06:56. > :07:06.16. He has been around a long time, Robert Weale. Great success indoors
:07:07. > :07:12.and outdoors. But Stewart Anderson is some 20 odd years younger. He is
:07:13. > :07:42.one of the new breed. Very, very good draw shot player.
:07:43. > :07:58.So two sets, nine ends. Three end tie-break if required.
:07:59. > :08:05.The shot clock will be in play. 30 seconds to play the bowl. Four
:08:06. > :08:10.time-outs in the first two sets with an extra one come the tie-break, but
:08:11. > :08:16.you can carry the time-outs into the tie-break if you need to do so.
:08:17. > :08:23.Robert needs to put five or six feet on his last bowl.
:08:24. > :08:29.He doesn't really want to offer Stewart Anderson the opportunity of
:08:30. > :08:35.lying two or three shots in the first end, John. No, that's right.
:08:36. > :08:38.One of the points I would make, but if Stewart gets out of the blocks
:08:39. > :08:57.fast he can blow you away very, very quickly. He needs to stick in there.
:08:58. > :09:06.Robert might be tempted to have a go at this. There is no easy draw in.
:09:07. > :09:11.It is not an easy strike either. There is nothing really inviting
:09:12. > :09:15.there, Dave. I would have thought if he was going to draw this, he would
:09:16. > :09:19.have moved to the forehand. A little tap on his bowl, but he wants to
:09:20. > :09:25.make the correction. Another foot or so.
:09:26. > :09:36.Players really don't like to have to play the running bowl first end.
:09:37. > :09:39.They want to get into a rhythm. He has got second out of that. Well, it
:09:40. > :09:49.is confirmed as two red. Stewart Anderson just trotting up as
:09:50. > :10:35.the clock ticks down to ten seconds. Well, there is still that little
:10:36. > :10:41.half-running shot, but he was very close for the draw on the backhand.
:10:42. > :10:47.Yeah, I think he will stick with it, Dave. Well, there we go. He is
:10:48. > :10:55.playing the runner in the forehand. He is trying to get on to his own
:10:56. > :10:59.bowl. Oh dear, unlucky. It doesn't make any difference. Still the two
:11:00. > :11:18.shots. APPLAUSE
:11:19. > :11:27.Stewart Anderson has been involved in the Scottish elite squad for the
:11:28. > :11:38.Commonwealth Games later this year in Glasgow. And it is bringing
:11:39. > :11:46.another complication for the coach as to who he is going to select in
:11:47. > :11:52.the key position for the singles. But Stewart by his own admission
:11:53. > :11:58.hasn't really got an outdoor CV that would compare with some of the
:11:59. > :12:05.others. No, I would be surprised if Stewart made the singles team. The
:12:06. > :12:07.man on the mat will be defending his Commonwealth title, that's Robert
:12:08. > :13:11.Weale. Won gold in India. This is a tidy little head of bowls.
:13:12. > :13:14.Robert needs to pass the red and that will help. A clean jack would
:13:15. > :13:55.have been better, but second-best. Just a little bit over weight. A
:13:56. > :14:00.good spot at the back there. Robert could lie a very good three.
:14:01. > :14:12.He needs to move the jack a few inches. Is he going to run? A good
:14:13. > :14:19.try. Yes, that's good bowling though. Both players now finding the
:14:20. > :14:48.range. We are just on the second end.
:14:49. > :15:00.He needs to just hurry. Oh, it has dropped away. Yeah, it is a good
:15:01. > :15:03.second. It makes it difficult for Robert to get in there. He certainly
:15:04. > :15:08.can't get on to the jack on the front end of the jack anyway, Dave.
:15:09. > :15:22.He doesn't want to sit back on it so he has got a problem here. Push the
:15:23. > :15:27.red bowl out on the wide line and let it drift back in again. Down to
:15:28. > :15:31.two seconds on that delivery. I don't think he would be terribly
:15:32. > :15:35.worried about it. Yes, that's why he is on the high side. Understandably,
:15:36. > :15:58.take the single. This is a wonderful arena at Potters
:15:59. > :16:05.Leisure Resort. We hope to see a big crowd in as usual. Fantastic
:16:06. > :16:11.facility for offices behind the rink which houses the press, the players
:16:12. > :16:20.lounge and the director's office and of course, we're up here.
:16:21. > :16:31.We are right behind the rink. A super view. Well, Robert is just
:16:32. > :16:36.struggling in the early ends in this direction. The first bowl was short
:16:37. > :16:40.and it is well down the green again. He will be aware, David, he doesn't
:16:41. > :16:48.want to leave too much space for that first bowl because Stewart is
:16:49. > :17:17.so monotonous. He really is a good frontrunner.
:17:18. > :17:21.APPLAUSE And that's a good correction. You
:17:22. > :17:28.are right John, Stewart Anderson once he gets into a rhythm he is
:17:29. > :17:31.very, very hard to put down. He really can't afford to drop short
:17:32. > :18:08.bowls. I can see what the intention was to
:18:09. > :18:31.drop on to the red bowl. He just overplayed it.
:18:32. > :18:37.Well, he hasn't made the correction. He is certainly arriving at the jack
:18:38. > :18:43.or the bowl, but any weight at all and you're going to struggle to get
:18:44. > :18:48.back. Robert switched sides, back on to the backhand side. Yes, I think
:18:49. > :18:52.he was surprised he was just so heavy with the previous bowl. But
:18:53. > :18:59.this has a bit of work to do. Here it comes. Not really.
:19:00. > :19:05.I wonder would Stewart Anderson be tempted with a little runner here on
:19:06. > :19:11.the inside line? He might get the two bowls and just draw it and try
:19:12. > :19:17.and turn the jack. The saving grace for Robert is that short bowl is
:19:18. > :19:21.covering the two greens. He is down on the inside line to try and get
:19:22. > :19:32.the two green bowls. A bit of work to do for this to get back to them.
:19:33. > :19:35.Close. Well, he managed to get one. A very good effort. Very controlled
:19:36. > :19:59.weight. Stewart Anderson's dad, Billy, is
:20:00. > :20:01.get Is his place on the front row. He comes to the events to give young
:20:02. > :20:33.Stewart support. It is a good start by Robert. This
:20:34. > :20:47.is what he needs to do. Just ask a few questions of Stewart.
:20:48. > :21:01.This is a great reply. When your opposition gets one so close, you
:21:02. > :21:07.are just delighted to be within five or six inches yourself. That's a
:21:08. > :21:11.good second by Stewart. That's a descent start to the game. Both
:21:12. > :21:16.players finding good weight, good line.
:21:17. > :21:21.That's the right idea from Rob if you're going to play that, make sure
:21:22. > :21:23.you're reaching up to the shot bowl. If you miss it, you come around
:21:24. > :22:07.behind. Well, this has got a chance. Well,
:22:08. > :22:13.that's beautiful. That really brings his back bowl into now. That's a
:22:14. > :22:18.receiver. Yes, he couldn't have put this anywhere better. A brilliant
:22:19. > :22:25.bowl. Using weight, Stewart Anderson. He is looking for a
:22:26. > :22:32.connection. Well, that's good. Opened it up, Dave. Well, it is one
:22:33. > :22:37.bowl singles now. He got a good solid contact. The jack has popped
:22:38. > :22:46.down into the ditch. The green bowl will lie. There is a mountain of
:22:47. > :22:51.room there. It is going to be hard to get close to t John, but he will
:22:52. > :22:55.have to go down the narrow side. Yeah, distance isn't a problem, of
:22:56. > :23:00.course, it is the space you have got on the board. The jack is well
:23:01. > :23:02.across to the corner of the rink. Robert's not flirting too much with
:23:03. > :23:16.the side ditch. That's pretty good. It is beatable,
:23:17. > :23:20.but it is a descent bowl. The difficulty for Stewart here is that
:23:21. > :23:24.he has got three shots against him and he cannot afford to really flirt
:23:25. > :23:30.with the ditch. He may play the conservative shot. Yeah, he doesn't
:23:31. > :23:37.want to be too over ambitious. You drop in a loose three. Second is
:23:38. > :23:45.first priority. If he does beat the green bowl, it is a bonus. It is
:23:46. > :23:54.going to be on the edge if anything. There it is. That's a confident man.
:23:55. > :23:58.He is confident in his ability. A lot of players would have dropped
:23:59. > :24:05.that bowl four or five feet short and would have been happy with
:24:06. > :24:18.second, but not Stewart Anderson. Excellent recovery. Hit and draw.
:24:19. > :24:24.There is Greg Harlow and his wife Kay. They are enjoying the game.
:24:25. > :25:10.Greg playing later today. These two players, could have, David
:25:11. > :25:16.will know each other very well because Stewart played for a couple
:25:17. > :25:24.of seasons down in Wales and was a member of Robert Weale's indoor club
:25:25. > :25:31.so they have probably played with and against each other on a number
:25:32. > :25:37.of occasions so nothing new there. And Robert's game going very well.
:25:38. > :25:42.Yes and somewhat different priorities for both players. Stewart
:25:43. > :25:48.Anderson defending champion, of course, but well up the ranking list
:25:49. > :25:53.and Robert Weale hovering at number 16. So a little bit of pressure
:25:54. > :26:00.there. In a way I think Robert was unmore
:26:01. > :26:03.pressure in that front -- under more pressure. Stewart is the bookies
:26:04. > :26:09.favourite for this one, but Robert has got so much experience and he
:26:10. > :26:13.will know being under dog might suit him. But saying that, you have got
:26:14. > :26:18.to be able to play the bowls and he won't be happy with that.
:26:19. > :26:26.Yes, all the players below Robert Weale on the provisional list, Simon
:26:27. > :26:33.Skelton, all the players that could have bounced up in front of him have
:26:34. > :26:42.gone. So at worst I reckon he will stay at number 16.
:26:43. > :26:55.Robert is too experienced David, I think, to let that worry him. You
:26:56. > :27:00.can't come on the green worrying about your ranking position. You
:27:01. > :27:03.sort of tighten up and don't play your normal game. You have got to
:27:04. > :27:12.relax and just play a normal game of bowls. That's easier said than done!
:27:13. > :27:56.Stewart is not too happy with that. Well, he is not that far away. A lot
:27:57. > :28:07.of head shaking on that one, Dave. He thought that one was well away.
:28:08. > :28:12.Well, there is nothing easy for Robert here. It just has to be a
:28:13. > :28:17.clean draw. If he drops it out, he could be in with a chance of a two
:28:18. > :28:30.or three. That's the sort of aim, just draw to that back red bowl. It
:28:31. > :28:40.is a big line there. The weight will have to be good on that line. Now,
:28:41. > :28:49.he just overplayed it and disappointing really from Robert.
:28:50. > :28:56.Well, certainly not big scoring, five ends played, a total of six
:28:57. > :29:02.shots scored. Stewart Anderson two up. There is plenty of time for both
:29:03. > :29:07.players. You might say it is cagey at the
:29:08. > :29:16.moment, David, rather than spectacular. Yes, it is a steady
:29:17. > :29:19.game. It hasn't really livened up. Both players staying away from the
:29:20. > :32:58.running bowls. It is a chance to try and tidy up.
:32:59. > :33:16.He needs to try and have a go at this.
:33:17. > :33:33.Try and push it through. The short ball might come into play. There is
:33:34. > :33:56.lots of options there. He is resisting the temptation of
:33:57. > :33:58.looking at the drawing line. He's playing it back hand, underneath the
:33:59. > :34:24.short balls. -- bowls. It is his personal preference. I
:34:25. > :34:33.think it was the right shots to play. He needs to change is part a
:34:34. > :34:38.little bit. I think you have to play weird shots to shake things up
:34:39. > :34:47.sometimes. I talked to Rob at last week about the injury he had. --
:34:48. > :34:50.Robert. He said he was not quite as confident as he would have liked to
:34:51. > :36:03.have been. A bit of stress on the leg.
:36:04. > :36:28.APPLAUSE. Stewart locked in behind the first bowl. He needs to up his
:36:29. > :36:49.game a little bit. He is not reaching with this.
:36:50. > :37:00.Very intelligent bowling from Stewart. It will be a bonus if he
:37:01. > :37:40.gets another shot. He gets another shot. He's not too worried.
:37:41. > :38:10.He was persevering with the draw shot.
:38:11. > :38:31.It is easy action from Stewart Anderson. Good, consistent weight
:38:32. > :38:38.with every bowl. And I think he was looking for the green. I think
:38:39. > :38:39.Robert will have to look at hitting this now. Nothing much on the draw
:38:40. > :38:55.bear. He has no choice. He has to play
:38:56. > :39:13.through this. Hope for a good result. He is narrow. That is
:39:14. > :40:11.virtually the first set,. -- that is virtually the first set gone.
:40:12. > :40:24.The question was, coming into this, has he played enough bowls to match
:40:25. > :41:09.Stewart? Stewart Anderson has played a lot of competitive matches.
:41:10. > :41:12.It puts a lot of pressure on your opponent when you were surrounding
:41:13. > :41:48.the jack. He is looking to make a slight
:41:49. > :42:07.correction on his previous delivery. He is in the area. He needs a double
:42:08. > :42:57.to continue into the last end. I can't see Robert getting any more
:42:58. > :43:36.than one out of this. Stewart is very tactically astute.
:43:37. > :43:43.He's a great player. Very calm, considered. I have got to say, he is
:43:44. > :43:56.at the top of his game at the moment and he is certainly the man to beat.
:43:57. > :44:15.Robert Weale played some good bowls, but Stewart was really doing
:44:16. > :44:23.what he does best, John. Putting the pressure on his opponent. I felt
:44:24. > :44:31.Robert had a chance, but I am a bit worried now because he needed to
:44:32. > :44:34.start one. Stewart has control of the match, and it will be very
:44:35. > :44:39.difficult for him now. Very difficult. It is not over until the
:44:40. > :46:43.fat lady sings, David. He has been allowed a little bit too
:46:44. > :46:51.much space. Ten inches away. Ten inches is
:46:52. > :48:00.pretty good. There he goes. It is a highly trained working dog,
:48:01. > :49:03.actually. I think the dog, like Robert, is a
:49:04. > :50:23.bit too relaxed at the moment. He needs to do something.
:50:24. > :51:05.Alarm bells are ringing for Robert Weale.
:51:06. > :51:31.He was looking at the angle. Players have learned how to use it to their
:51:32. > :51:46.advantage. They just have to get back in time.
:51:47. > :52:15.I don't think he is comfortable using weight at the moment.
:52:16. > :52:30.Stewart will take advantage of every opportunity. He is trying to keep
:52:31. > :52:31.the scoreboard ticking over. Towards the respot position. That should be
:52:32. > :52:48.close enough. Robert is being careful. He is
:52:49. > :52:57.looking at whether the jack will bounce. If it bounces, it could come
:52:58. > :53:05.off in the respot. He can't afford to be wide here.
:53:06. > :53:20.He doesn't need a lot of weight on the indoor surface, though.
:53:21. > :53:26.That full crotch delivery is not helping. -- that full crouched
:53:27. > :54:30.delivery is not helping. He felt he was ready to come back. I
:54:31. > :54:33.reckon he is about 70%. I do not think he is fully fit yet. It was a
:54:34. > :55:47.nasty hamstring injury. As Robert is not hitting well, he
:55:48. > :55:50.has sort of relaxed a little bit. Now he has decided to take a few
:55:51. > :55:59.risks, put the pressure on. He's playing some decent balls. --
:56:00. > :56:34.he's playing some decent bowls. Dropping short, but look where it
:56:35. > :56:35.has finished. I don't think he would have expected to be this far clear
:56:36. > :57:00.at this stage. That's short bowl forced Robert out
:57:01. > :57:15.a little bit. He is getting somebody you out of it. -- he's getting some
:57:16. > :57:39.value out of it. The problem is the weight control is not good enough.
:57:40. > :58:50.Any extension on the jack and he was good. It was close.
:58:51. > :58:57.is going to be really difficult. He's much too classy give that away.
:58:58. > :59:05.He will be thinking this is damage limitation for Robert. That is about
:59:06. > :59:13.as good as it is going to get at the moment. Just relax, and hope it gets
:59:14. > :00:17.better. One loose one. The second one is
:00:18. > :00:21.adjusted. There is still a chance for Robert
:00:22. > :00:38.to get in. He hasn't had too many really good touchers. Oh, this is
:00:39. > :00:48.struggling for weight. It is just not happening.
:00:49. > :00:51.It is really difficult to see him getting back into this unless he can
:00:52. > :01:05.lift his game. It is not great from Stewart, but it
:01:06. > :01:21.is blocking the way in from the striking area.
:01:22. > :01:24.A loose end. He is very quick on the delivery. The head is coming up and
:01:25. > :02:08.he doesn't seem to have a feel for the carpet this afternoon.
:02:09. > :02:15.Well, there is still a bit of room. That would be a very loose two at
:02:16. > :02:28.this level. He got that one away a little bit
:02:29. > :02:35.better, Robert. It is all about pace on that line. He has to negotiate
:02:36. > :02:40.his own front ball. A solid connection would help. It is a good
:02:41. > :02:49.weight, but he will take everything he can.
:02:50. > :02:55.APPLAUSE He needed that, Robert. He will be
:02:56. > :04:06.relieved to get on to the card in this set.
:04:07. > :04:14.At the moment Robert is not playing well. He needs to take advantage of
:04:15. > :04:26.that. He needs a three to get him back into the set. It is a little
:04:27. > :04:30.bit better, but not enough to keep Stewart out and the difficulty is
:04:31. > :04:34.John, when you go walkabout like this, it is hard to find a way back
:04:35. > :04:37.and especially if you have got an injury because you have a tendency
:04:38. > :04:41.to fall back on that a little bit and be careful with it. But I think
:04:42. > :04:48.the opposition is the problem here. Stewart Anderson is so consistent.
:04:49. > :04:51.Yes, Stewart is. You know Stewart is going to play a better second bowl
:04:52. > :05:03.then. At this level of bowls, certainly
:05:04. > :05:07.from the last 16 onwards you have got to be at your best. Mediocre
:05:08. > :05:11.doesn't win you this championship. It can happen to anybody. If you get
:05:12. > :05:16.an off day, you are it blown off the rink. It is a fact of life at top
:05:17. > :05:19.level sport. Yes, there is no way back from that situation, but I
:05:20. > :05:23.always think when it is going pear-shaped like this, when you try
:05:24. > :05:26.and shake things up, you start and play running balls with your
:05:27. > :05:29.secretary delivery, it -- second delivery, it may go wrong, but it is
:05:30. > :05:34.only about have you got the opportunity to do that? There is no
:05:35. > :05:44.running shot this end from Robert, he has to draw it and the way he is
:05:45. > :05:52.going, well that's not going to happen. Stewart plays a poor first
:05:53. > :05:58.bowl. He gets the second bowl in. The third bowl is coming in behind
:05:59. > :06:02.the jack. There is no target. Robert can't run at anything here. He just
:06:03. > :06:05.has to try and draw within an inch of the jack. It has been a while
:06:06. > :06:37.since he managed to do that. Well, he is down on a good line
:06:38. > :06:47.here. Will it get back in time? Just struggling a bit. That's a good
:06:48. > :06:56.effort. Stewart doesn't really need to be too ambitious here. The old
:06:57. > :07:03.high line drift. A really comfortable position in this match.
:07:04. > :07:06.He can see it out now. Well, he will keep his
:07:07. > :07:11.concentration. He realises he is no the over the line yet. One big ball
:07:12. > :07:15.from Robert Weale will act like a switch from him. He wants to keep
:07:16. > :07:30.the pressure on. He wants to keep scoring. That's a good effort.
:07:31. > :07:34.You must keep operating. One more shot really for Stewart
:07:35. > :07:39.Anderson will make it relax a little bit and keep it tight for the next
:07:40. > :08:50.end and he should be through to the quarter-finals.
:08:51. > :08:58.Well, there is always one, isn't there?
:08:59. > :09:09.Yes, I have got the Swansea up here as well. A season ticket, John
:09:10. > :09:15.Price. That canary is looking as sad as our swans are at the moment.
:09:16. > :09:20.That's what I was thinking. I think you will both be safe. I wouldn't
:09:21. > :09:30.bank on that. You don't know much about football, David. That's true!
:09:31. > :09:41.Oh Robert. That is not what we expect from you. No.
:09:42. > :09:51.You have got to say Stewart played well, bhu really he -- but really he
:09:52. > :10:00.had very little to do. Nothing is coming back the other way. He is
:10:01. > :10:06.playing really well. He has just been relentless Stewart Anderson and
:10:07. > :10:11.Rob, well he just hasn't been at his best. He has been forced into these
:10:12. > :10:22.running balls which he feels incredibly uncomfortable playing.
:10:23. > :10:27.I think that's sensible, get the time-out. It won't look any better
:10:28. > :10:31.when he gets up the top end. It is a really nasty line. Not much of a
:10:32. > :10:37.target there, Dave. Look at the green bowls, they are little
:10:38. > :10:42.policemen down the rink. Well, even if you are playing really well to
:10:43. > :10:47.filter through those bowls and get to the red would be a tremendous
:10:48. > :10:48.shot. The forehand, he has been pushing it out wide on the last
:10:49. > :10:57.couple of occasions. Once again, Robert Weale facing a
:10:58. > :11:15.difficult position. He was a good ball wide from the
:11:16. > :11:21.target he was after and on a day like this, that's going to happen.
:11:22. > :11:24.Stewart is just having a bit of a laugh on the way past because
:11:25. > :11:29.whenever you get to this stage in the match, John, you sort of banter,
:11:30. > :11:36.don't you, because you know it has all gone? Well, it has certainly
:11:37. > :11:43.gone pear-shaped for Robert. He is taking solace with Sandra, the
:11:44. > :11:47.umpire. He is probably saying to Sandra, "Go down and play the last
:11:48. > :11:52.bowl for me." It looks like it could be number four and that would be a
:11:53. > :11:58.situation that Robert plays his last ball and misses, it is going to be
:11:59. > :12:03.all over. Oh, it is in front as well. That's a
:12:04. > :12:09.cracking bowl. Deliberate or not, that's a cracking ball right in
:12:10. > :12:16.front. Stewart is just smiling there.
:12:17. > :12:36.APPLAUSE A time-out. Why not? When you get to
:12:37. > :12:41.fours, 13-1. So there is no way back from that.
:12:42. > :12:43.The best he can do is score three fours which there is no chance of
:12:44. > :12:57.happening. Well, he is going for it. It looks
:12:58. > :13:03.lying he is better -- like he is better, but it still looks a bit on
:13:04. > :13:06.the wide side. Yes, the last bowl of Stewart's was good.
:13:07. > :13:33.Three shots to Stewart Anderson. 12-1 after six. A nasty reading from
:13:34. > :13:37.Wales? It is surprising bearing in mind Robert didn't play badly in his
:13:38. > :13:42.first round. I think Stewart has played very very well, but you know,
:13:43. > :13:47.I just felt he lost control of the match in that first set, the back
:13:48. > :13:52.end of that set and he never recovered. Yes, from 5 had -2,
:13:53. > :13:54.really losing the three and the two and that sort of set the tone.
:13:55. > :13:58.Stewart got better and Robert has fallen off even more. Well, he has
:13:59. > :14:02.fallen off really badly and in the set and you would expect a bit more
:14:03. > :14:06.and that's not a criticism. Robert is a top champion. He is very, very
:14:07. > :14:10.experienced and a good player, but he hasn't been at the races today.
:14:11. > :14:14.It can happen to anybody, but it is a bad place to happen on the
:14:15. > :14:21.portable rink in the World Championships and it is unfortunate.
:14:22. > :14:46.That takes nothing away from Stewart's performance.
:14:47. > :14:53.This is looking good again. Pops it in there. There we go. It is just
:14:54. > :14:56.relentless. Well, with Robert Weale you just have to sit back and admire
:14:57. > :14:58.it. He hasn't been on form todayks but all credit to Stewart Anderson
:14:59. > :15:16.for keeping his concentration. The crowd are encouraging this bowl
:15:17. > :15:41.forward. Once again, just falling short of a good bowl.
:15:42. > :15:51.I think we are at the exhibition level now. He is on autopilot, isn't
:15:52. > :15:59.he? Sandra is enjoying the banter with Stewart, but it is all over. We
:16:00. > :16:04.know that. Robert is turning his back on this.
:16:05. > :16:26.And really it has all gone. Well, I think it is over this end
:16:27. > :16:31.happen. It happens to all of us. It has happened certainly in the past
:16:32. > :16:35.and for me anyway, but you just sometimes go out there. You don't
:16:36. > :16:40.find it. Your opposition is decorating the jack and it just goes
:16:41. > :16:48.wrong. Just shake their hands and say all the very best. Good luck.
:16:49. > :16:57.Oh, look at this. There we go. Number four. Oh dear, oh dear.
:16:58. > :17:04.That's it Robert, just drop it down there. He is experienced to know
:17:05. > :17:09.this is a one off match. Oh, he is looking at it coming back to the
:17:10. > :17:15.jack. Is it going to make it? Oh, I don't believe it. There you go. He
:17:16. > :17:20.gets the last big cheer, Robert Weale.
:17:21. > :17:25.APPLAUSE It is one of these things, it
:17:26. > :17:29.happens, but Robert Weale just had a tough day at the office. Stewart
:17:30. > :17:34.Anderson takes the first set 10-2 and the second 12-2.
:17:35. > :17:38.Defending champion cruises his way into the quarter-final and does so
:17:39. > :17:55.in some style. So Robert Weale's efforts just to
:17:56. > :18:02.save things, but missed in the last, well at the eighth end.
:18:03. > :18:17.Once again Stewart Anderson just showing how well he has been
:18:18. > :18:21.drawing. Pops another one in. Very little coming back his way. Stewart
:18:22. > :18:26.Anderson taking full advantage by dropping another one in front. He
:18:27. > :18:29.takes a three at that end to go 12-1 and it was just all too easy for the
:18:30. > :18:36.defending champion today. The stats will show that. Ends won
:18:37. > :18:43.11-4. The average shots per end, well it was double. Look at the
:18:44. > :18:46.total shots scored, 22-4. Now, we wouldn't have thought that would
:18:47. > :18:50.have happened in this match. It was just Stewart Anderson on top form
:18:51. > :18:58.and Robert Weale just suffering a little bit.
:18:59. > :19:04.A majestic performance from Stewart Anderson. How do you feel you
:19:05. > :19:07.played? I was really pleased with my performance. It was another step up
:19:08. > :19:11.from the first round because I was really nervous in the first round
:19:12. > :19:12.and I just settled into my game and enjoyed it. Rob wasn't at his best
:19:13. > :19:21.and he struggled to be at enjoyed it. Rob wasn't at his best
:19:22. > :19:25.title, how do you feel that's going? Well, in a way I feel for Robert
:19:26. > :19:30.because Robert came through a lot of injuries and I do put my hands up to
:19:31. > :19:34.Robert and he will be back stronger. I have to keep it going. You can't
:19:35. > :19:38.let it slip away because you know he will come back strong. The way you
:19:39. > :19:42.played today, people will find it hard to think that you could get
:19:43. > :19:48.better. Do you feel you could get better? Yes, I think I can get
:19:49. > :19:53.better every performance. I play against my opponent, that's all I
:19:54. > :19:58.do. Well, you did a pretty good job. You are through to the
:19:59. > :20:05.quarter-finals. Well done. Let's look at how the last 16 are shaping
:20:06. > :20:11.up. Stewart Anderson is through. Greg Harlow is to play Darren
:20:12. > :20:38.Burnett later this evening. There is lots more to come here at
:20:39. > :20:43.Potters. Here is how you can follow the bowls on the BBC.
:20:44. > :20:45.As well as Human Rights on BBC Two and the -- highlights on BBC Two and
:20:46. > :21:00.the Red button, we are live and the -- highlights on BBC Two and
:21:01. > :21:05.always a chance to catch up using the BBCi player. You can contact us
:21:06. > :21:13.on social media, Twitter and Facebook and not forgetting hashtag
:21:14. > :21:20.BBC bowls and don't forget to follow the BBC Sport website for the latest
:21:21. > :21:24.news. The World Championships are well
:21:25. > :21:30.underway here at Potters. Tomorrow, we are on the Red Button at 10am for
:21:31. > :21:37.Andy Thomson against John Price. That's round two. Both men the
:21:38. > :21:41.senior men in the tournament. 58 Andy Thomson against 53-year-old
:21:42. > :21:46.John Price. Both are former champions. Tomorrow afternoon, it is
:21:47. > :21:50.the ladies final and that's at 1pm on BBC Two. So the World
:21:51. > :21:54.Championships are progressing, but it is an important year for the
:21:55. > :22:02.sport with the little matter of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
:22:03. > :22:05.2014 is a bumper year in the sport of bowls. As well as the World
:22:06. > :22:08.Indoor Championships, several bowlers are looking forward to the
:22:09. > :22:15.Commonwealth Games where the sport will be one of the most popular
:22:16. > :22:19.events. We met up with some of the potential home nation participants.
:22:20. > :22:25.The Scottish team for Glasgow will not be finalised until March, but
:22:26. > :22:33.the depth of talent presents a fob for the head coach and selector. As
:22:34. > :22:44.well as many high cla out door specialist, David can call on the he
:22:45. > :22:51.2013 world singles champion, Stewart Anderson. Former Welsh Open winner
:22:52. > :22:57.Darren Burnett is in the mix. So the coach has big decisions ahead.
:22:58. > :23:01.Scotland is blessed with having a huge talent pool. That's where the
:23:02. > :23:08.selection process is key and really important. So from the very
:23:09. > :23:11.beginning we is the out a -- we set out a selection criteria. It is a
:23:12. > :23:20.challenge, but it is a good challenge to have.
:23:21. > :23:28.David is still a high ranking player on the circuit himself. How
:23:29. > :23:32.difficult is to remove himself from the friendships of the bowls
:23:33. > :23:37.community? In many ways, it is a good thing because it gives me an
:23:38. > :23:41.insight to the guys. I get to know, you know, how good, they are in form
:23:42. > :23:46.at any time. I know their strengths and weaknesses. I have grown up with
:23:47. > :23:49.a lot of these guys. In many ways, I think it is an advantage rather than
:23:50. > :23:55.a disadvantage. We have got to separate, you know,
:23:56. > :23:59.your emotions from selecting the team. I always said I would select
:24:00. > :24:02.the best team as if my life depended upon it and the guys know it, but
:24:03. > :24:06.the backing I have got from other players has been amazing. Being
:24:07. > :24:15.centre stage and Scotland will be a special moment for the most seasoned
:24:16. > :24:18.bowls campaigners. Foster and Marshall have won pretty much
:24:19. > :24:22.everything in the game, but this summer will have the adrenalin
:24:23. > :24:24.pumping like never before. The Commonwealth Games in Scotland will
:24:25. > :24:34.be huge. Everybody is talking about it now. There is still a couple of
:24:35. > :24:38.months left to see who gets selected. There is plenty of guys in
:24:39. > :24:46.the mix. We will see what happens. You can't get a bigger spectacle
:24:47. > :24:52.than playing the Commonwealth Games in your own country. If I get to
:24:53. > :25:03.play, I will come away with a medal, but gold would be icing on the cake.
:25:04. > :25:08.It would be a great achievement for myself to get into the first
:25:09. > :25:14.Commonwealth and the expectation and all the players will be so high and
:25:15. > :25:18.really looking forward to it. The top quality facilities sit at
:25:19. > :25:23.the heart of Glasgow City centre and in the shadow of the impressive
:25:24. > :25:27.museum and art gallery building. Come July, this location will be
:25:28. > :25:36.packed with home support. It is a great stage to show case the sport.
:25:37. > :25:42.Where is the stand going to be? It is going to be bigger. They are
:25:43. > :25:49.going to have a stand up there and there will be seats around here. How
:25:50. > :25:57.many people sf 5,000. It is going to be amazing. This venue is probably
:25:58. > :26:01.the best bowling venue I have ever been to anywhere in the world and
:26:02. > :26:05.even coming here today in January, it gives you goose bumps when you
:26:06. > :26:09.look at architecture and the history of this place. We are in the heart
:26:10. > :26:13.of Glasgow here and we have got six bowling greens. It is amazing. The
:26:14. > :26:17.support we will get from the Scottish public will be incredible.
:26:18. > :26:22.So we're really looking forward to it. Obviously the home support, they
:26:23. > :26:32.will have high expectations of the Scottish team because we have done
:26:33. > :26:35.so well in other years. We are in the firing line. Those who get
:26:36. > :26:42.picked, there will be added pressure on because everybody knows Scotland
:26:43. > :26:45.is a top, top nation at bowls. This is our Olympics. The strongest
:26:46. > :26:48.nations in the world will be competing in the Commonwealth Games
:26:49. > :26:52.at bowls. That's not necessarily true for all sports, but it is true
:26:53. > :26:57.for bowls. In many respects, we are still considered a minority sport
:26:58. > :27:02.even though we are probably the second biggest sport and governing
:27:03. > :27:06.body in the UK. This is a shop window for our sport and if these
:27:07. > :27:11.guys win any medals, they will be national heroes overnight.
:27:12. > :27:17.The 2014 World Championship wasn't the best week from a playing point
:27:18. > :27:23.of view for David, but he will be keeping a close eye on the
:27:24. > :27:28.performances of his elite team squad members. A win at Potters would do
:27:29. > :27:33.no harm at all! Well, a man with experience of the
:27:34. > :27:38.Commonwealth Games is David Corkhill who has joined me. Corky, just
:27:39. > :27:45.explain for the life of a bowler in the year there is the World
:27:46. > :27:48.Championships and the Commonwealth Games, how important is that? It is
:27:49. > :27:51.multi-sport. You are part of a large organisation and there is different
:27:52. > :27:55.demands upon it as well. It only comes around once every four years
:27:56. > :28:00.as well. Scotland in particular had a monumental disaster in India and
:28:01. > :28:04.they have brought in David. That steadied the ship. A good
:28:05. > :28:08.appointment and they are going to be, well I would say they are a
:28:09. > :28:14.target of two medal. Four or five they might be on for. Reflecting on
:28:15. > :28:22.the match that we have seen, the Commonwealth Games champion, Robert
:28:23. > :28:26.Weale, way below his performance this afternoon. How good was Stewart
:28:27. > :28:32.Anderson? Well, Stewart was excellent today. The difficulty for
:28:33. > :28:37.players when your opponent isn't playing well is concentration.
:28:38. > :28:41.Robert will be disappointed. He did his best. He has a few ranking
:28:42. > :28:45.points. But he will be fit for the Commonwealth Games and that will
:28:46. > :28:52.make a difference. Alison Merrien is taking on Katherine Rednall. Let's
:28:53. > :29:01.take a look at the ladies semifinal line-up. Rebecca Field against Julie
:29:02. > :29:04.Forrest from Scotland. Katherine Rednall is taking on
:29:05. > :29:08.Alison Merrien. That's our next match on BBC Two. It is time to get
:29:09. > :29:13.things going with our MC. Well, making her WBT debut
:29:14. > :29:19.appearance this year is this young 18-year-old from Suffolk, the 2012
:29:20. > :29:22.national Champion of Champions, ladies and gentlemen, Katherine
:29:23. > :29:50.Rednall. Now to a lady with many world titles
:29:51. > :29:56.to her credit. Last year's finalist and the 2011ed ladies match play
:29:57. > :30:04.champion, your appreciation please for Alison Merrien, MBE.
:30:05. > :30:48.Fascinating game in front of others. Katherine Rednall is a prodigious
:30:49. > :30:54.talent. She certainly is. If sheep uses the form -- if sheep producers
:30:55. > :31:02.the form which she has been showing this week, it will be a tough match.
:31:03. > :31:07.I think it is fair to say Katherine is moving up a level against a
:31:08. > :31:18.world-class player in the shape of Alison Merrien. Alison has been
:31:19. > :31:46.around for a long time. Alison is still on form. Not many people can
:31:47. > :31:49.touch her. She is dominance. I have got the fortunate task of coaching
:31:50. > :32:02.the Jersey team in the Commonwealth Games. I am looking forward to that.
:32:03. > :32:12.Talented squad, both the men and the ladies. Hopefully, they will do
:32:13. > :32:23.well. Good opening holes here. -- good opening bowls here.
:32:24. > :32:32.Two really good bowls from Katherine. She doesn't appear to be
:32:33. > :32:40.suffering from any nerves, does she, David? I haven't noticed anything
:32:41. > :32:46.which indicates that she struggles with the atmosphere. She is lapping
:32:47. > :33:00.it up, loving it. Alison looks like she is winding up
:33:01. > :34:19.here. She will be happy with that, Alison.
:34:20. > :36:01.It was a good strike but not a very good result. No, no.
:36:02. > :36:05.Her strength will be getting close to the jack, particularly in the
:36:06. > :37:35.first few bowls. They are all struggling to come back
:37:36. > :37:37.to the centre here. I think Katherine has to be careful and not
:37:38. > :41:32.underestimate Alison here. If she alleges the jack, that would
:41:33. > :41:41.be a bit of a bonus. -- if she ages the jack.
:41:42. > :41:57.I would expect Alison to try and tickle the jack. She's on the
:41:58. > :42:25.backhand. She has enough weight to make the damage on the red bowls.
:42:26. > :42:35.It is one of those teasing end, isn't it? Alison is experienced
:42:36. > :42:44.enough. Nine times out of ten, they do not come off. Katherine looks to
:42:45. > :43:30.be not running with this one. Probably quite wise.
:43:31. > :46:01.There is Katherine's dad and ground. -- dad and grandma.
:46:02. > :46:12.That was a missed chance, because it has left a door open. It certainly
:46:13. > :46:40.has. Alison's parents, watching from the players lounge. Perfect view.
:46:41. > :46:49.She could have made two or three there.
:46:50. > :47:23.A chance for Alison to score a double.
:47:24. > :47:30.Hasn't really swathed interaction gets. There are signs of some very
:47:31. > :47:47.good bowling. Both players are playing quite well. They will both
:47:48. > :47:54.be reasonably happy with the start. We are eating jelly babies. Well,
:47:55. > :48:07.you are. I am an athlete, you were just a commentator.
:48:08. > :48:17.Thanks to Natasha for the jelly babies. It was a great big buckets
:48:18. > :49:20.of them. They will keep you going for the rest of the week, I think.
:49:21. > :49:28.If you play against a player with a lot of natural talent, but in many
:49:29. > :49:36.ways, relatively little experience, you move the jack around. Sometimes
:49:37. > :49:43.it is very subtle. It shakes them up a little bit. I think that is
:49:44. > :50:00.exactly what Alison is doing. She has seen how talented cartoonist. --
:50:01. > :50:16.she has seen how talented Katherine is.
:50:17. > :51:08.She's more confident on the forehand side.
:51:09. > :52:39.She is in the area. I could see what she was after. Damage limitation.
:52:40. > :52:45.She's been quite clever at the moment, which is quite right. Using
:52:46. > :52:48.all her experience. Katherine needs a good bowl to settle her down a
:52:49. > :55:23.little bit. She is showing a lot of maturity. If
:55:24. > :57:12.a player has the last bowl at the end, they do not need to play it.
:57:13. > :59:07.Any movement on the jack here must be good for Alison.
:59:08. > :59:19.Impressive CV for an 18-year-old. She is an outdoor under 25 winner,
:59:20. > :59:39.also senior international. She used to play a lot football. She
:59:40. > :00:03.decided to go down the bowls way. You can travel the world with bowls.
:00:04. > :00:08.I have a daughter myself who is about to do a test. She will be
:00:09. > :00:16.expecting a car, I am sure. Dad John, sitting in the back row,
:00:17. > :00:35.quietly out of the way. Business end of the set now. The
:00:36. > :00:42.last two sends, five all. Good first bowl.
:00:43. > :02:02.Better bowl here from Katherine. Yes, that wins it. Just got enough
:02:03. > :02:03.of the jack to touch it round the corner and fall back. That's not
:02:04. > :02:19.going to be easy to beat. If you are going to win these sort
:02:20. > :02:24.of matches, those are the sorts of bowls you have to play. Alison has a
:02:25. > :02:27.chance here. Nearly. Changes things a little bit. Given her a shoulder
:02:28. > :02:34.to come off on the forehand. Important Katherine puts another
:02:35. > :03:17.bowl on the head here. I think that last bowl will force
:03:18. > :03:21.Alison now into an attacking bowl. Try to remove both the red bowls. A
:03:22. > :03:32.backhand runner here. That's what she's playing. With a
:03:33. > :03:37.little bit of power. Straight bowls should hold for a long time, but
:03:38. > :03:42.it's just coming under now. I don't think that's going to make any
:03:43. > :03:49.difference, the angle wasn't right. The bowl was on the narrow side.
:03:50. > :03:59.That's when the narrow angle bowls really do struggle. Harder to play
:04:00. > :04:05.that type of shot. The bigger bias bowl will allow you to come back to
:04:06. > :04:12.the centre easier. -5 to Katherine, one end to go.
:04:13. > :04:33.This will be an interesting nervy last end for both players, but who
:04:34. > :04:38.can hold those nerves the best? Katherine has got no nerves. It's
:04:39. > :04:43.the joy of being a teenager, Andy, she just doesn't seem to feel the
:04:44. > :04:49.pressure. No, I don't think she does. That is a good opener, exactly
:04:50. > :04:55.what she wanted. I have seen experienced international players
:04:56. > :05:05.with 10, 15 years behind them at the top level, struggle in the portable
:05:06. > :05:12.rink. No sign of it with this lady. Wide and heavy from Alison.
:05:13. > :05:29.Chasing the two deep bowls are never going to go amiss. That's another
:05:30. > :05:37.good bowl here from Katherine. Good stuff. Unfortunate just to stay jack
:05:38. > :05:42.high. That's what you need, in in the middle of the afternoon. Banana
:05:43. > :05:47.to keep you going. This bowl running through, it looks tuberculosis. She
:05:48. > :06:04.pulled that across her body. Doesn't need all the weight. -- tight.
:06:05. > :06:16.She needed that a little bit deeper really. Not bad though because it
:06:17. > :06:29.covers the respot. She's going again. This is
:06:30. > :06:35.high-risk. Oh, dear. Not sure about that weight, Andy. You want to keep
:06:36. > :06:39.the bowl on the green. To score two now, it's almost going to be
:06:40. > :06:45.impossible, if Katherine puts a deep bowl in. She's got the respot
:06:46. > :06:53.covered. She wants to cover the ditch. She's line two. Well, it's
:06:54. > :06:58.going to be tough. The crowd are buzzing there because I don't think
:06:59. > :07:03.they really agreed with that shot either. Katherine, have you gone
:07:04. > :07:07.deep? Oh, I'm not sure. Oh, Katherine this is a big, big
:07:08. > :07:15.mistake. Why is she coming into the head? She should have been the
:07:16. > :07:21.deepest bowl. That is not what she wanted. The crowd are clapping. Jack
:07:22. > :07:24.in the dish, Alison scores two here. Less weight and try and control it
:07:25. > :07:30.and run the jack with her bowl. Not easy the way it's sitting. It looks
:07:31. > :07:36.like she is going heavy again. I think she's pulled it again. Well...
:07:37. > :07:40.I have to say, that's not good driving. I don't think it was the
:07:41. > :07:46.right tactics either. Katherine gave her a chance. However, it's the
:07:47. > :07:49.first set to Katherine Rednall. Referendum four shots and the first
:07:50. > :07:54.set to Katherine Rednall. COMMENTATOR: Katherine Rednall
:07:55. > :07:59.played steady bowls and kept the pressure on when Alison was moving
:08:00. > :08:06.the mat and the jack all around. She succeeded the last two ends, a four
:08:07. > :08:11.and a two. 11 shots to five, in the first set. The young lady from
:08:12. > :08:56.Ipswich. REFEREE: Jack line, 27.5 meters.
:08:57. > :09:04.COMMENTATOR: Slight disturbance. Alison just taking her time. Yes,
:09:05. > :09:24.the clock was stopped as well. It's down and running.
:09:25. > :09:55.That's a beauty. She's not letting go. Rightly so.
:09:56. > :10:02.Came strong in the second part of that set, did Katherine, she wants
:10:03. > :10:06.to just continue it. At the moment, Alison's just lost her way a little
:10:07. > :10:12.bit. Alison had a very good win in the first round, or the previous
:10:13. > :10:16.round, against Karen Murphy, 7-7 the first set. On sebgdcond 12 shots to
:10:17. > :10:35.three. -- on the second, 12 shots to three.
:10:36. > :10:44.APPLAUSE What a find she has been. Just
:10:45. > :10:48.decide enter, have a go. Here she is looking very good indeed. Hopefully,
:10:49. > :10:51.that will encourage more women to have a go. A chance here to play in
:10:52. > :11:01.the portable rink. It's not only that, Andy, selectors
:11:02. > :11:05.see that sort of performance, not just the performance, also the way
:11:06. > :11:08.she is handling the pressure. There are very few international bowlers
:11:09. > :11:13.who actually play in front of this sort of crowd? You are right,
:11:14. > :11:18.exactly. Almost 1,000 spectators here almost every day. It's big
:11:19. > :11:33.pressure. She's handling it really well, is Katherine.
:11:34. > :11:41.Well, it's a good blocker. I don't think it was intended to be there.
:11:42. > :11:49.It's given Alison problems. She will have to play it on the forehand. The
:11:50. > :11:56.backhand is out of action. Her weight shots have been rather off
:11:57. > :12:00.target. If she's playing the forehand it must be weight. Much
:12:01. > :12:08.more controlled weight. Allowing the ball to drift a little bit. Drifting
:12:09. > :12:39.too much. The red bowl turned out to be not so much in the way.
:12:40. > :12:45.Katherine Rednall will not be in the running for the Commonwealth Games,
:12:46. > :12:50.Andy, the England team have a very strong ladies team, I think, for
:12:51. > :12:55.Glasgow. They certainly are talented team, is the England team. Not
:12:56. > :13:02.announced yet. I think it's a few months yet. It's in the mix. Down to
:13:03. > :13:06.their elite squad, 10 men and 10 women at the moment. The women did
:13:07. > :13:11.well. The men not so well. The strength is in the women's side, at
:13:12. > :13:18.the moment, at that level. Alison will not be there, by the looks of
:13:19. > :13:24.it. No, she hasn't gained enough points with the Guernsey
:13:25. > :13:33.Commonwealth Games system. Slightly controversial that was.
:13:34. > :13:42.I'm sure all my Gurnsey friends will be sending me letters about that.
:13:43. > :13:47.Why don't you shut up about Alison's selection. It's certainly a
:13:48. > :13:49.controversial area, but I always Luke hear both sides of the story
:13:50. > :13:55.before I start making comments. Katherine changes her hand and draws
:13:56. > :14:07.the shot. It's early days. Alison should just
:14:08. > :14:12.be thinking about popping a few bowls into the head, wait for the
:14:13. > :14:16.opportunity. Pick up a count. She's just not drawing well enough with
:14:17. > :14:29.the first two deliveries. , her game has gone off.
:14:30. > :15:07.Once again a good first bowl, not fold up with a second and a third.
:15:08. > :15:10.Leaving the door open again. Alison's just not at the moment
:15:11. > :15:24.grouping the bowls together. Facing problems.
:15:25. > :15:32.Katherine, can you take advantage here and add another. I don't think
:15:33. > :15:39.she's running. Well that was a chance. Yes, a missed chance,
:15:40. > :15:47.indeed. Alison's going to try and fade inside her front green one.
:15:48. > :15:52.Nothing else available. She has chances here David, push the red
:15:53. > :15:58.bowl out, put the jack deep. Here we go. Again, it's a tight line bowl.
:15:59. > :16:08.It may hamper her a little bit. Once you go wide, I'm afraid, like this
:16:09. > :16:14.bowl, you will not get back. That particular manufacturer that the
:16:15. > :16:20.bowls are made by have a variety of models which do bend. Surprised
:16:21. > :16:24.she's going for that particular fine line model. She was happy in the
:16:25. > :16:29.first game with the bowling. She did lean with them. She feels
:16:30. > :16:32.comfortable with the bowl. Occasion Ali, shots are more difficult with
:16:33. > :16:36.them. Right away, Katherine is getting a little bit of a lead here,
:16:37. > :17:50.3-0, second set. -- occasionally. She's getting there with the second.
:17:51. > :17:54.Keeping the pressure on. Really, Alison hasn't really got that first
:17:55. > :18:00.bit going, the first two bowls. The last three or four ends Alison has
:18:01. > :18:03.struggled to get anything within a foot of the jack. Not quite
:18:04. > :18:11.comfortable here on the carpet. That's better. That wins it. A lot
:18:12. > :18:32.better. Forcing Katherine into, shall we
:18:33. > :18:35.say, the more difficult shot. I'm surprised a little bit. I thought
:18:36. > :18:40.she might have changed onto the forehand.
:18:41. > :18:48.The backhand is OK, she can tap her own bowl. Bringing the jack into the
:18:49. > :18:53.green one. She played it four feet away. If it stops any time now it
:18:54. > :18:57.will get in the way. That's the forehand out of
:18:58. > :19:11.commission. REFEREE: One green.
:19:12. > :19:19.COMMENTATOR: It will be interesting to see what Katherine plays here.
:19:20. > :19:31.She is attacking. Oh, that's a hard shot, Andy, that sort of weight.
:19:32. > :19:40.I think that might have been trying to draw that and hope to touch the
:19:41. > :19:45.red bowl. I've been with Katherine quite a bit. We talked about the
:19:46. > :19:51.shots to play in. I think she will realise that that's a difficult one.
:19:52. > :20:09.Just a draw here for Alison. Try and draw another.
:20:10. > :20:17.It's going to be difficult enough to drift it back in time. It's coming
:20:18. > :20:19.back. It will still struggle. Just a little bit heavy. She's on the
:20:20. > :20:37.board, in the second set, is Alison. REFEREE: One shot, Alison Merrien.
:20:38. > :20:57.COMMENTATOR: 3-1, after three ends. All very cagey at the moment.
:20:58. > :21:41.COMMENTATOR: That didn't look right, out of the hand. She's making the
:21:42. > :21:46.recovery with the second bowl. She wants to get that first bowl going
:21:47. > :21:48.again. As does Alison really, the first bowl puts a lot of pressure on
:21:49. > :22:22.the opposition. A chance now for Alison to put the
:22:23. > :22:40.pressure on, close the door, get a really good bowl in.
:22:41. > :23:10.Struggling. She's going to have a bad end here. Already three down.
:23:11. > :23:32.I'd expect another one to be added. Not Katherine's best end.
:23:33. > :23:45.Carrying a little bit. I thought it was number four. It's probably going
:23:46. > :23:48.to push that one out. Dropped away herself. I wonder if it's only the
:23:49. > :23:55.two now. REFEREE: Two green. A poor bowl by
:23:56. > :23:58.Alison. Certainly was. She was a little bit heavy with that one.
:23:59. > :24:02.Katherine just needs to find a yard on her previous deliveries. Second
:24:03. > :24:13.bowl, she'll be happy with that. Push it out on a good line. It looks
:24:14. > :24:17.better. A lot better. Here it comes. Second shot.
:24:18. > :24:22.APPLAUSE She walks down the rink and says -
:24:23. > :24:28.why could I not do that with the other three? Exactly.
:24:29. > :24:35.That was another opportunity for Alison Merrien there. Lying three,
:24:36. > :24:39.trying to draw for four, bang it in close. We are not saying that
:24:40. > :24:43.Katherine wouldn't have drawn the same shot, it's different with four
:24:44. > :24:47.against you than it is two? If Alison had put a good close one in
:24:48. > :24:53.there, Katherine was under a lot more pressure. Only facing two down,
:24:54. > :25:01.it's not quite as much. REFEREE: 29. 5 meters.
:25:02. > :25:05.COMMENTATOR: Now back to 29.5. Going back to the tactics used earlier on.
:25:06. > :25:13.Changing the length. It's important to get that opening bowl in.
:25:14. > :25:34.You're very harsh. 10 inches away from the jack, a full length. Great
:25:35. > :25:39.starter. This is even better. I'm a hard task master. Yes. You must be a
:25:40. > :25:56.tough skip to play for. That's a lovely line coming down
:25:57. > :26:14.here. Is it just carrying a little bit? It is.
:26:15. > :26:25.Once again, very close again. Stay on the high side. And, she has.
:26:26. > :26:29.Perfect. Oh, that's two great bowls. A different jack length as well. I
:26:30. > :26:35.think we might see Alison here with the heavy one. Here we come.
:26:36. > :26:44.Close. Very. Great strike. That will go on the respot. I think she's
:26:45. > :26:51.getting a good result out of this. Pushed her green bowl through. The
:26:52. > :26:56.jack, we can see, is off the side. Check these two bowls, one of them
:26:57. > :27:00.is a toucher, yes, the red one. That stays in the ditch and is live. The
:27:01. > :27:09.jack is outside the confines of the rink, which is the yellow marker on
:27:10. > :27:17.the bank. So that comes into the are respot position. A good strike and a
:27:18. > :27:22.good result. She hit the target and got fortunate pushing her own green
:27:23. > :27:24.bowl across, but it's a good strike. You're going to have to play across
:27:25. > :27:39.the rink. She looks narrow. A bit light on it
:27:40. > :27:44.as well. It might stop Alison playing the forehand.
:27:45. > :27:53.REFEREE: About four feet. COMMENTATOR: Amazing the different
:27:54. > :27:59.term ocean we have, Andy, in the sport. I made my way to the
:28:00. > :28:04.commentary box today and who gentlemen stopped me and talked
:28:05. > :28:06.about the cot as the jack. Yes, certain parts of the country have a
:28:07. > :28:21.name for the jack. Well played. Got to be worth reaching. A good
:28:22. > :28:29.draw for second. Very useful when you are 4-1 in front. Much better
:28:30. > :28:33.line with this. Is she too heavy? Too wide. The weight is keeping her
:28:34. > :28:43.out, Andy. It will dive towards the end. Here it comes. Yep. As you say,
:28:44. > :28:46.it was a bit too wide as well. Two great bowls from Katherine Rednall,
:28:47. > :29:20.ends up losing the double. REFEREE: Jack line, 26. 5 meters.
:29:21. > :29:23.Changing it again, Alison Merrien. 26. 5 meters. The variations
:29:24. > :29:41.continue. COMMENTATOR: Alison has decide to
:29:42. > :29:45.forego the backhand and change to the forehand. Katherine is always
:29:46. > :30:27.going to play this side. Good change in tactic.
:30:28. > :32:24.Just lacking that 2-macro feat. That would've been merely good.
:32:25. > :32:34.It is a counterweight. -- it is all down to wait.
:32:35. > :32:55.This is a good shot opportunity. Stretch her away little if she gets
:32:56. > :32:57.a double. " Jack. -- her family would not be happy if they do not
:32:58. > :33:11.see her scoring again. 28 metres is allowing Alison Merrien
:33:12. > :35:57.delivered on. Alison has to be really careful
:35:58. > :36:48.here. Any movement on the jack will not be to have advantage.
:36:49. > :37:07.She's close here. Very close. Oh, well played. APPLAUSE.
:37:08. > :37:16.She pushed the ball onto the jack. It was a confident shots. She played
:37:17. > :38:06.it well. Katherine Rednall is to up. -- two
:38:07. > :39:15.up. Two to play. She needs to get at least one shot
:39:16. > :40:34.here. I agree. She is almost in the final.
:40:35. > :40:49.This has got a bit of work to do to combat. -- come back.
:40:50. > :41:25.Alison is faced with an awkward situation.
:41:26. > :41:41.Katherine not sure where to put this last bowl.
:41:42. > :41:49.Realistically, anything down there is good. She's going in for the kill
:41:50. > :42:18.if she done for this. That was a good seat option. --
:42:19. > :42:19.gutsy option. She's forcing Alison into playing a very difficult shots
:42:20. > :42:30.here. I think you have got to take a
:42:31. > :42:53.gamble, Alison. It is a struggle for the bowl to get
:42:54. > :44:56.back of the centre. Neither very good start. Katherine
:44:57. > :45:48.will run for cover. Katherine has played very well.
:45:49. > :45:58.She has certainly played a very mature much.
:45:59. > :46:06.It looks on as impossible to score a four year.
:46:07. > :46:57.What a feeling this must be. Great feeling. It must be great. There she
:46:58. > :47:21.goes. Well, Katherine, congratulations.
:47:22. > :47:27.Alison is taking her time, rightly so.
:47:28. > :47:34.There is nothing there for her. I cannot even see anything. There is
:47:35. > :48:00.just nothing there. She knows she won't score a full. --
:48:01. > :48:16.four. A smarm are from the 18-year-old. --
:48:17. > :49:27.a smile there from the 18-year-old. Katherine gets a single. She takes
:49:28. > :49:43.the match. Her stats are fairly comprehensive.
:49:44. > :49:52.The drawing ability of Katherine Rednall really did win the day.
:49:53. > :49:57.There is Katherine Rednall. She's the youngest finalist this
:49:58. > :50:05.competition. How good does that sound? Yes. Really pleased to have
:50:06. > :50:13.got to the final. I played some of my best bowls. Alison was great as
:50:14. > :50:18.well. How much did yesterday help you today? The mixed players final
:50:19. > :50:24.was brilliant. Another close game. I think it did help in front of the
:50:25. > :50:27.crowd and the cameras. What was the pressure like playing in front of
:50:28. > :50:35.your family as much as anything else? There is no pressure with her
:50:36. > :50:40.family. Really? No. That got the day off work and I am really pleased
:50:41. > :50:45.he's here. How did you manage to get the day off school? I was meant to
:50:46. > :50:51.be in school this week but my headteacher has been really good and
:50:52. > :50:54.said I can have as much time as I need. Congratulations and well done
:50:55. > :51:00.on becoming the youngest finalist. Thank you. Congratulations to
:51:01. > :51:04.Katherine. Big day for her. Hopefully, she will get more time
:51:05. > :51:13.off school. We will ship in the final? We will look at who was she
:51:14. > :51:19.has got. Rebecca Field is up against Julie Forrest.
:51:20. > :51:23.We will pick this up at the start of the second set. Rebecca comfortably
:51:24. > :52:45.won the first. There is Alison Merrien, looking
:52:46. > :53:24.forward to her semifinal this afternoon.
:53:25. > :53:35.Bad results, Rebecca. She will be disappointed with that. A chance for
:53:36. > :54:18.Julia. An opportunity to tighten it up.
:54:19. > :54:30.Rebecca has played a lot of good bowls.
:54:31. > :57:17.It is one of these shots that pop up every now and again.
:57:18. > :58:06.Basically, Rebecca needs to work on her second bowl.
:58:07. > :00:06.She is left in a position of no real position.
:00:07. > :00:57.I am sure there must have been a game that was singles every
:00:58. > :02:27.thing-macro. Once again, the last end, it was it
:02:28. > :02:35.is certainly different this time, you just feel that Julie is
:02:36. > :02:40.loosening up. She needs to shake this game up. Julie changed her
:02:41. > :02:49.tactics on the last end and did not score a shot but Julie needs to up
:02:50. > :02:56.her game. They are playing neat bowls. You just feel that Julie is
:02:57. > :03:08.chugging along in second gear. She really needs to ratchet it up a bit.
:03:09. > :03:16.Changing her hand, good tactic. The opening two deliveries were not
:03:17. > :03:26.close enough. Let's give this hand a go. A decent swing in this hand. She
:03:27. > :03:28.is good with this one. It needs an edge and she has got it, that is a
:03:29. > :04:11.winner. Struggling with pace with this one.
:04:12. > :04:15.Now, Julie, spare shot opportunity. Merely needs to take this. -- really
:04:16. > :04:35.needs. It is a nice good, high Road. She
:04:36. > :04:41.has a chance with this one. It will be a measure for the first double in
:04:42. > :04:51.the match. My feeling is we will be heading for another single.
:04:52. > :05:00.That's quite close. Yes, and the bowl sitting down, you normally go
:05:01. > :05:07.with the one with a bulge on it and that is a red one. It might be just
:05:08. > :05:17.the one. Hard to tell. From our position, it looks just like one.
:05:18. > :05:26.I would put a measure on it, I really would. They are coming out
:05:27. > :05:27.with a measure. It is not always easy to check out. Sandra will
:05:28. > :06:12.confirm one way or the other. UMPIRE: One-shot, Julie Forrest. She
:06:13. > :06:27.missed her chance. We thought it was only the one on the rings.
:06:28. > :06:35.A lovely arena here at Potters Leisure Resort. You can see where
:06:36. > :06:41.the tournament office is, the players' lounge. And we are in
:06:42. > :06:51.darkness which is the best way to keep us. We get a great view from
:06:52. > :06:56.the commentary box. Just keep us out of vision, David!
:06:57. > :07:11.A face for radio, is that what you are saying?
:07:12. > :07:44.The first time that Rebecca has led on the backhand side. Opening ball
:07:45. > :07:48.of Julie Pozner forcing her onto the backhand side. -- opening ball of
:07:49. > :08:17.Julie's. We have not seen too much grouping
:08:18. > :08:22.of the bowls. That is better from Julie. Once again, it has forced
:08:23. > :08:34.Rebecca onto the backhand side when she hasn't played beside a lot. --
:08:35. > :08:36.played this side. Julie needs another one in behind the jack for
:08:37. > :09:00.cover. I am assuming the depth was
:09:01. > :09:05.deliberate. She was definitely trying to get a back bowl. Probably
:09:06. > :09:11.didn't need to go as deep as that. Always helps to have the deepest
:09:12. > :09:17.bowl. Rebecca is playing a narrower line, a more positive shot and I
:09:18. > :09:21.think she will go under. That hasn't really helped. I think she is now
:09:22. > :09:36.two shots down. The danger is, will be two
:09:37. > :09:37.cabbages... I think they are just about level with each other, the
:09:38. > :10:00.deep ones. Excellent bowl. A really good bowl,
:10:01. > :10:16.she needed that. Three down, quite a big target,
:10:17. > :10:18.here. You would expect Rebecca to hit something here, take some of the
:10:19. > :10:27.bowls out. A big drive, some interesting
:10:28. > :10:30.terminologies for the drive, call it what you will. A case of hitting the
:10:31. > :10:39.target. What a bowl. Maximum results, and
:10:40. > :10:52.it. She picked up a treble. Hits the
:10:53. > :11:03.target, all three balls cleared out of the head, what a result. Good
:11:04. > :11:10.weight. That is possibly a matchwinner for Rebecca Field.
:11:11. > :11:17.There is my mixed pairs partner, Catherine, ready for her big game
:11:18. > :11:26.this afternoon. Players watching in the players lounge.
:11:27. > :11:32.A massive six shot turnaround there. That was a big turnaround. From
:11:33. > :11:47.three down to three up. I think Julie could take a bit of
:11:48. > :12:26.confidence from that. It was a good end. She just needs to repeat that.
:12:27. > :12:52.It will be interesting to see how Julie Forrest response to that. The
:12:53. > :12:58.first time that she has really had a good position, a lovely played
:12:59. > :13:08.weight shot, it shows the damage you can do. Exactly, if I was Rebecca, I
:13:09. > :13:15.would agree. She should take confidence from that end.
:13:16. > :13:23.Has it knocked her confidence? We'll have to see.
:13:24. > :13:37.This bowl could cause Julie some problems.
:13:38. > :13:44.Three shots but they are all two feet away. I would expect Julie to
:13:45. > :13:47.be better with this one. She just needs to push the ball out and it is
:13:48. > :14:10.a big hand, this backhand. Gently on the jack... Goodness me,
:14:11. > :14:18.did that pull away quickly? I think she has got the shot. The trouble is
:14:19. > :14:21.she is still underplaying the line and now there is a chance for
:14:22. > :14:29.Rebecca to move the jack a couple of inches. Readily available on both
:14:30. > :14:46.hands but she has been preferring the backhand.
:14:47. > :14:57.She gets a shot. Good enough, she will be happy enough. The last bowl
:14:58. > :15:00.has been very effective from Rebecca. This match would have been
:15:01. > :15:05.totally different except for three or four last bowl deliveries.
:15:06. > :15:09.Rebecca has played a lot of big last bowls. But Julie must draw the shot
:15:10. > :15:25.here. She has got it. Into-macro oh, yes.
:15:26. > :15:34.Well played. Massive bowl.
:15:35. > :15:54.UMPIRE: One-shot, Julie Forrest. A wider line, just had enough weight
:15:55. > :16:18.to sneak up to the red bowl and drop-in for number one.
:16:19. > :16:39.UMPIRE: Jacklin 28.5 metres. -- jack length.
:16:40. > :16:55.A different tactic here from Julie. Slightly longer length. I think she
:16:56. > :17:02.is still thinking here on the rink. She is a good tactician, Julie.
:17:03. > :18:00.Good correction here from Rebecca, excellent bowl, well played.
:18:01. > :18:06.Corrections were needed, and the big bowl when required. That has been
:18:07. > :18:32.the difference, Rebecca has played the big bowls when required.
:18:33. > :18:40.Great shot. She was a bit unlucky there.
:18:41. > :18:50.That has got her down to one. A match last night and a lot of bowls
:18:51. > :18:56.were played like that by layers where everything seems to go wrong.
:18:57. > :19:04.Good bowl but did not get the shot. I think in those's case I don't
:19:05. > :19:11.think he got the run of the green. Are intended to call that shot in
:19:12. > :19:16.the future a Les! He was so unlucky last night, it was unbelievable. I
:19:17. > :19:25.think Jonathan Ross deserves a little break now and then. Julie,
:19:26. > :19:30.not a great head you are facing. Difficult to see how she will score
:19:31. > :19:33.here. That is exactly the situation if you pick up the jack and it
:19:34. > :19:42.bounces to the opposition, left virtually nothing. She had better be
:19:43. > :19:51.quick. Wow. One second to spare. She is in the area, will it get back?
:19:52. > :19:58.No. Try to peel the ball out clean. One second, I honestly thought she
:19:59. > :20:04.would lose that one. I was looking forward to hearing the bus this
:20:05. > :20:11.morning, David. It picks me up. -- hearing the buzzer. Another single.
:20:12. > :20:19.Rebecca happy with the one. It has been a very tidy, professional
:20:20. > :20:25.performance by Rebecca Field. The large crowd here have certainly
:20:26. > :20:31.appreciated this match. Obviously, we will be very fair but the local
:20:32. > :20:40.woman will obviously have the extra bit of support. The majority will be
:20:41. > :20:42.favouring the Norfolk girl. The crowd just want to see good bowls.
:20:43. > :21:11.They are a fair crowd. It is the big end seven. Julie you
:21:12. > :21:53.feel probably needs to score here. Seventh end, a key end in the nine
:21:54. > :21:57.end set. One that the player who is trailing needs to score. And it is
:21:58. > :22:03.essential that Julie Forrest get something out of this. Good bowling,
:22:04. > :22:08.Andy, but not many really nailing the jack. Not much grouping together
:22:09. > :22:11.of the bowls, shall we say. Lots of big bowls, most of them played by
:22:12. > :22:35.Rebecca. She is just not getting the weight.
:22:36. > :22:37.Just overplaying it. She can put a lot of pressure on Julie here if she
:22:38. > :22:52.has a good close bowl. There is room here for Julie, after
:22:53. > :22:55.that slightly heavy shot. Given a third batch of the Cherry and she
:22:56. > :23:06.really shouldn't have been allowed that. -- third bite of the cherry.
:23:07. > :23:26.I think she is still one down. It had just run through.
:23:27. > :23:59.Another chance for Julie Forrest. She is three down so there is lot of
:24:00. > :24:06.pressure on this bowl. If she fails here, I think the game
:24:07. > :24:18.is all over. She plays off the wide line all the
:24:19. > :24:26.time with the position of the mat. It will have to stop quickly.
:24:27. > :25:13.She scores another single on this end.
:25:14. > :25:21.Lots of discussions about who would be the best player, it is hard to
:25:22. > :25:26.tell because there are some fantastic players in the southern
:25:27. > :25:29.hemisphere. Jo Edwards from New Zealand. Yes, currently one of the
:25:30. > :25:34.top players. I would agree, they have been many good players.
:25:35. > :25:47.Outdoor, Karen Murphy. Super player outdoors, and going back a bit and
:25:48. > :25:53.Julie Forrest's CV is amazing. Julie will be first to admit that perhaps
:25:54. > :26:00.it has not been her year. It does not look as good here, but I agree,
:26:01. > :26:07.talented player. She has perhaps not played her best bowls on the
:26:08. > :26:14.portable rink. Norma Shaw, she was a fantastic player for England. Or
:26:15. > :26:19.Margaret Johnson from your neck of the woods, another talented player.
:26:20. > :26:23.It is hard to tell the generations as well. It really is.
:26:24. > :26:35.And then you are looking at this, the indoor, outdoor situations.
:26:36. > :26:47.Melee talented lady players -- many talented. But things are not looking
:26:48. > :26:54.good for Julie here at the moment. Rebecca sees the finishing line now.
:26:55. > :26:58.You just feel that she has lost her way.
:26:59. > :27:10.Rebecca is going to have a look at this head.
:27:11. > :27:18.I think she would do well to block the way in for Julie and stop I
:27:19. > :27:21.think she is putting a position bowl in here, and covering the inner
:27:22. > :27:32.spot. Julie being left with a difficult
:27:33. > :28:04.shot once again. She is in heaps of trouble. Four
:28:05. > :28:10.yard short on the forehand might be useful and forced Julie into trying
:28:11. > :28:19.to draw the shot. That runner, Julie's green bowl was blocking her
:28:20. > :28:21.out. In a lot of trouble. It looks like probable last end of the game
:28:22. > :28:28.here. UMPIRE: Time-out called. Three
:28:29. > :28:35.time-outs remaining. Hasn't used one yet so she can take all four in one
:28:36. > :28:43.go if she wanted. She knows that she is in a very good position. Even for
:28:44. > :28:49.Julie to draw, it would be very difficult. Doesn't matter what she
:28:50. > :28:57.does here, but don't put it anywhere near the head. They are asking each
:28:58. > :29:03.other what they think. Custer's last stand comes to mind! A bit late to
:29:04. > :29:11.be thinking what you think at the end!
:29:12. > :29:21.This is difficult for Julie. I think tried to draw the shot. There is no
:29:22. > :29:25.other shot on, and nest she plays a backhand bowl onto the jack, bounces
:29:26. > :29:31.it up the ring. This is just so difficult to get out of this.
:29:32. > :29:34.UMPIRE: Time-out called. The backhand runner might be the only
:29:35. > :29:37.way because there's nothing on the forehand except an absolute draw to
:29:38. > :29:43.within an inch of the jack. So difficult. The jack may come in
:29:44. > :30:04.in a different direction. It is all over. Rebecca Field picks
:30:05. > :30:09.up the double and I have to say, the defending champion really did play
:30:10. > :30:13.well in that match. Very consistent drawing but pulled out some really
:30:14. > :30:22.big bowls when needed. Thoroughly deserves to win. An amazing match in
:30:23. > :30:26.some ways in the first set, Andy, because all the singles that were
:30:27. > :30:30.played. The majority going to Rebecca, and I would agree with you,
:30:31. > :30:34.without doubt, Rebecca was the better player on the day are due to
:30:35. > :30:40.their second final, she will be delighted.
:30:41. > :30:47.Defending champion is through to the final once again and she will play
:30:48. > :30:52.Catherine read Noel in the youngest ever line-up for the women's final.
:30:53. > :30:55.These two met a couple of his ago in the other 25, edition and Catherine
:30:56. > :31:00.came out on top and that is live tomorrow.
:31:01. > :31:08.There is one match that we haven't brought you news on so far It. Part
:31:09. > :31:14.in the men's competition, took place last night between Les Gillett and
:31:15. > :31:21.Jonathan Ross. Ross leads 3-2 having won the first set.
:31:22. > :31:31.COMMENTATOR: Jonathan Ross, the man from outside Belfast, now living in
:31:32. > :31:37.Paisley. He got over the line in the first set. He played good o bowls in
:31:38. > :31:43.the second set. Good drawing, good conversion shots.
:31:44. > :31:52.We have thought for many years that Jonathan Ross has under performed,
:31:53. > :31:53.as regards to his overall ability on television events. Maybe it's his
:31:54. > :32:06.year. Up against this man, Les Gillett,
:32:07. > :32:08.well-known to both of us, John, and to many of the top players on the
:32:09. > :32:18.circuit. Really good player. Trying to
:32:19. > :32:23.reestablish himself. He has just found it a little difficult, when he
:32:24. > :32:27.has had the chances in recent years on the portable rink, he hasn't
:32:28. > :32:35.quite lived up to the expectation. There is no doubt in his class,
:32:36. > :32:42.David. I don't think anybody would want to draw Les. His defeat of his
:32:43. > :32:52.opponent in the first round proves that. Sets wise, 8-3, 2-8 and 2-1
:32:53. > :32:56.the tie-break. Wasn't much in it, David Gourlay would have realised
:32:57. > :33:11.that Les Gillett was a very dangerous opponent.
:33:12. > :33:18.Doesn't want that. That's a bad result. Thought it might have gone
:33:19. > :33:20.in on the openside then. Always the danger of turning that green bowl
:33:21. > :33:30.in. Yes, Les was unlucky to lose the
:33:31. > :33:32.first set. Jonathan managed to get the edge off his shot bowl, push it
:33:33. > :33:41.off the jack. Little touch on the jack. That will
:33:42. > :34:07.bring it out into the open, just a little bit more. UMPIRE: Two green.
:34:08. > :34:15.COMMENTATOR: Les is in a bit of bother now. He was looking good at
:34:16. > :34:22.one stage. Dropping a second bowl in. Hits the green one, now he has
:34:23. > :34:24.two against him. When he gets to his last delivery he's likely to have
:34:25. > :34:52.three against him. This is looking good for the third.
:34:53. > :34:56.He's left a shoulder. Les really should be attacking this. Not a
:34:57. > :35:03.great last bowl, it isn't. He's going for it. Lots of opportunities.
:35:04. > :35:09.He's in the area. How's his luck? Hasn't got any. Hasn't got any. Some
:35:10. > :35:14.days it doesn't pay to get out of bed. Unbelievable.
:35:15. > :35:20.Definite two and a measure for the third. That's a few times now that
:35:21. > :35:29.Les has been in the area for running bowl and got absolutely nothing out
:35:30. > :36:07.of it. The umpire will come out and sort this out.
:36:08. > :36:42.UMPIRE: Two shots, Jonathan Ross. APPLAUSE
:36:43. > :37:08.UMPIRE: Backlength, 28. 5 meters. -- jack length, 28. 5 meters.
:37:09. > :37:15.APPLAUSE COMMENTATOR: Another good opener.
:37:16. > :37:20.Problem for Les now, he can't afforded to see Jonathan stretching
:37:21. > :37:30.away in this set much he has to hang in there. Next two ends probably
:37:31. > :37:33.crucial, needs to score. Another good bowl onto the green. It's just
:37:34. > :37:48.not happening at the moment for Les. Yes. He's been very close on a lot
:37:49. > :37:57.of occasions, but a little bit of luck has gone against him. It's a
:37:58. > :38:02.bit like driving a car with one flat tyres and he mansion to get one of
:38:03. > :38:05.the tyres that does have a puncture. It keeps going. He's been a bit
:38:06. > :38:15.unlucky, that's all. He's going to have to start stepping
:38:16. > :38:19.up a gear because he's running out of time.
:38:20. > :38:30.Not in good shape here. Two not bad bowls, but they're short of a
:38:31. > :38:32.length. If he tucks one under in front of that jack, he's in big
:38:33. > :39:03.trouble. Has a bit of work to do this bowl.
:39:04. > :39:08.He's got a chance though. Here it comes. Gently, don't drop back on
:39:09. > :39:15.the jack. Oh, he's hung onto it. I thought if that jack had of moved to
:39:16. > :39:24.the green bowl, I would have said Les, think about the white flag.
:39:25. > :39:31.That's a beauty. He's in there. Les is on the old energy drinks. Not
:39:32. > :39:37.sure about that, mate, energy drinks, 240 volts might not go amiss
:39:38. > :39:40.on occasions, just to inject a little bit of something into his
:39:41. > :39:45.veins because he is a talented player. You just feel, if he comes
:39:46. > :39:46.out with one really big bowl, he could change everything in this
:39:47. > :39:58.match. Good effort by Jonathan. Jonathan
:39:59. > :40:02.hasn't got the shot. He is making it very difficult for Les to add
:40:03. > :40:23.another. He is closing everything down, isn't he?
:40:24. > :40:30.Didn't push it through. Better to get the jack, play safe. Get the
:40:31. > :40:37.single. Track in hand. He can change things. He's a flow player. If he
:40:38. > :40:43.can get into a flow, he can make things very difficult, but really
:40:44. > :40:47.needs to start score next couple of ends. Start taking this match to
:40:48. > :40:51.Jonathan Ross. That is what happens with Jonathan Ross, actually, if
:40:52. > :40:55.he's allowed freedom he will play and play well. When you start
:40:56. > :40:59.putting him under pressure, that running bowl starts to become
:41:00. > :41:05.inconsistent. You are probably right, Dave. You know Jonathan
:41:06. > :41:09.better than I do, you have long association through the Irish team
:41:10. > :41:18.with Jonathan. Talented player, he hasn't really got close to a final
:41:19. > :41:23.in the events. He had a semi-final many years ago. He will be keen to
:41:24. > :41:26.do well. That's what Les needs to do. Another foot on that, it would
:41:27. > :41:40.have been a really good bowl. Just leaving a little bit of room.
:41:41. > :41:46.It's also the fact he has been left out of the Scottish International
:41:47. > :41:50.Indoor team this year. He has been playing with them for the last few
:41:51. > :41:54.years. I think Jonathan has a little edge in his game. He wants to prove
:41:55. > :41:56.the fact that the selectors were wrong to do that. Good run here.
:41:57. > :42:13.Might help. Large teams of course and six rinks
:42:14. > :42:17.of four players. 24 players. When you take into consideration how many
:42:18. > :42:23.bowlers there are, it's quite an elite group. Yes Scotland is
:42:24. > :42:27.strength and depth. Not many poor players in Scotland.
:42:28. > :42:44.If that drops, it's got a chance, just holding up. UMPIRE: It's about
:42:45. > :42:51.11 inch. COMMENTATOR: That would be Les
:42:52. > :43:06.changing, I would have thought, onto his forehand.
:43:07. > :43:15.APPLAUSE. Good bowl. Got to be tempting for
:43:16. > :43:21.Jonathan now to run the two off. Decent size of target. Still got an
:43:22. > :43:25.open draw on his backhand side. He doesn't favour running on his
:43:26. > :43:29.forehand. He might stay away from that. He's deciding to draw. Prefers
:43:30. > :43:38.the weight shot on his backhand. He's got a chance. Just the wrong
:43:39. > :43:52.side of the red one. UMPIRE: One, red.
:43:53. > :43:58.COMMENTATOR: Really, Les has option, he could play the same bowl, Dave,
:43:59. > :44:04.draw it in and close it out on the backhand side. If he turns the jack
:44:05. > :44:07.six inches he could make a four out of it. Certainly worth a chance to
:44:08. > :44:13.get to the back green bowl. Forehand, he can come in on the wide
:44:14. > :44:14.side. This bowl will take a big heavy dip at the end. Not quite
:44:15. > :44:54.enough. Looks like a decent line, for
:44:55. > :45:04.Jonathan. Oh, is he going to make the gap? It will be one. 5-4, three
:45:05. > :45:33.to go. Les Gillett fighting his way back in
:45:34. > :45:48.this second set, 5-2 down. Now 5-4. Three ends to go. The mat is well up
:45:49. > :46:06.the rink. 24 meters, let's see how Les gets on with his first delivery.
:46:07. > :46:28.APPLAUSE That is not a bad start.
:46:29. > :46:48.UMPIRE: One, red. 10 inches your bowl.
:46:49. > :46:55.COMMENTATOR: Les playing his backhand. Needs to hurry with this
:46:56. > :46:59.one to get in front of the green. Just making it.
:47:00. > :47:10.APPLAUSE. Jonathan coming down to have a look.
:47:11. > :47:17.There are choices for Jonathan Ross, he will have a look to see what the
:47:18. > :47:20.angles are like. He can draw either side, not a particular problem with
:47:21. > :47:24.that. There is also a temptation, that is onto the green bowl. He will
:47:25. > :47:31.take a time out. I fancy the runner on this. He's been playing them
:47:32. > :47:40.pretty well, getting results from them.
:47:41. > :47:55.Well, deciding on the draw. This has to be very accurate.
:47:56. > :48:09.Always useful, if he didn't want to play that split with the next bowl.
:48:10. > :48:18.All three bowls will certainly disappear. Les will be trying to get
:48:19. > :48:24.one just behind the jack, if he can, we usually find this is the key end
:48:25. > :48:26.for any player that's in front. Win this and the opposition is really
:48:27. > :48:41.chasing things. I don't think there will be any mess
:48:42. > :48:51.being this time. He has to hit this. He has three bowls wide, 24 meters.
:48:52. > :49:00.He's on his favourite backhand for hitting.
:49:01. > :49:08.Oh, what a result. Oh! He ended up with a front toucher and the back
:49:09. > :49:15.position. That's what you call a maximum result. Les must be thinking
:49:16. > :49:19.to himself - what have I got to do? He has left Les absolutely no shot
:49:20. > :49:25.on this. Absolutely, no shot. There is nothing there for him. What a
:49:26. > :49:30.result. Poor, Les. He's smiling, he is sort of thinking to himself - my
:49:31. > :49:34.goodness me, this is not my night for this.
:49:35. > :49:43.That is an unbelievable bowl. UMPIRE: Les has two time-outs
:49:44. > :49:46.remaining. COMMENTATOR: He couldn't have
:49:47. > :49:51.anticipated a result like that. Unbelievable. He did. He hit the
:49:52. > :49:56.outside red, then the green. I'm thinking to myself... I thought he
:49:57. > :50:04.was going to end up two down, but... I think that's a bit cruel on less
:50:05. > :50:18.leshgs to be honest. Les might have to cover the shot. He has to. Trying
:50:19. > :50:23.to draw. Oh, no, no, Les. Jonathan could win this. Could win it on
:50:24. > :50:27.this. Any movement on the jack through the rink. He has to play
:50:28. > :50:32.this. It there is no reason why he doesn't play it with weight. Whizz
:50:33. > :50:36.the jack through to there. He will bring in his other two bowls, his
:50:37. > :50:45.own bowl will probably run through. It looks like he's drawing. H,
:50:46. > :50:57.Johnny. Drawing on the backhand. Well, I have to say I'm surprised. I
:50:58. > :51:00.think that was a chance. UMPIRE: One shot, Jonathan Ross.
:51:01. > :51:07.COMMENTATOR: He could have been brave there.
:51:08. > :51:30.I have to say that you talk about the rub of the green, whether that
:51:31. > :51:33.being in bowls, snooker or various other things, the reality is that
:51:34. > :51:46.Jonathan Ross has definitely had the luck in this match.
:51:47. > :51:52.Realistically, he's probably only one shot away from a place in the
:51:53. > :51:55.quarter-final. Yes, I think you're right there, Dave. Just needs to
:51:56. > :52:04.score this end. That's why I thought he might have
:52:05. > :52:05.played that shot on the last end, it was a big opportunity. That's a good
:52:06. > :52:25.start. Jonathan's last quarter-final in
:52:26. > :52:38.singles play was the International Open in Wales, three years ago.
:52:39. > :52:50.CROWD GROAN. You have to go back to 2006 for another International Open
:52:51. > :52:57.quarter-final. The last quarter-final in the World Singles
:52:58. > :53:08.is now 10-years ago. So, it's a big hurdle for him. UMPIRE: Two greens.
:53:09. > :53:16.The gap is 9 inches. It's five inches past. Still drawable. They
:53:17. > :53:18.are in a line so... Les needs a really big bowl, John, to have any
:53:19. > :53:24.sort of a chance. He's underplayed this. It's not
:53:25. > :53:44.going to be with this one. I think that's pretty hard to beat
:53:45. > :53:51.that situation, John. Jonathan has to be careful here because he
:53:52. > :53:57.doesn't want to leave a shoulder. If he can draw in and just turn that
:53:58. > :54:01.front green down, he's underweight, missed his line.
:54:02. > :54:10.I think Les will have to attack this. That's virtually a match lie
:54:11. > :54:16.against him. In fact, it is a match lie against him. He has to play into
:54:17. > :54:21.it. It looks like a left hander, his backhand would give him better odds.
:54:22. > :54:27.A chance of getting the short bowl into the jack with the two green
:54:28. > :54:31.bowls clean. Not an ideal position. He could end up half in one of those
:54:32. > :54:40.bowls and going away and he's still in trouble. Difficult. Not easy. No,
:54:41. > :54:47.I think he has to play it. Yes. Runner. It looks narrow to me.
:54:48. > :54:54.Doesn't want to get his own bowl this could be a disaster. It is.
:54:55. > :55:02.That is a nightmare. Well, poor old Les. It isn't happening Razor. I
:55:03. > :55:04.should explain that Les's nickname is razor, it's not that he hasn't
:55:05. > :55:19.shaved for a day or two. Now, he's in deep trouble. It's
:55:20. > :55:26.going to be very difficult. He's only got a dead draw now. Jonathan,
:55:27. > :55:33.really should be going deep with this. Anything past the red bowl is
:55:34. > :55:39.good. It's not bad. Covered the respot. I think he has to go again,
:55:40. > :55:44.John, because bowl onto bowl, he's got a chance, he will stay in with
:55:45. > :55:52.the red. It's so difficult to draw that shot the way it's sitting.
:55:53. > :55:57.It's not a good position. I think he's going to try and draw the shot.
:55:58. > :56:08.Good on him for trying the hard shot.
:56:09. > :56:15.I don't think he's going to make it for weight. He's going to lose the
:56:16. > :56:22.double. Match over. Two shots to Jonathan Ross. He takes the second
:56:23. > :56:27.set, 8-4, having won the first set 7-6. Jonathan Ross from Paisley in
:56:28. > :56:31.Scotland who is through to the quarter-final. Indeed
:56:32. > :56:38.congratulations to Jonathan Ross. He's through to the quarter-finals.
:56:39. > :56:48.Also there Stewart Anderson, Robert Paxton and Mervyn King.
:56:49. > :56:56.First of all, from today's action Stewart Anderson looked good? Very
:56:57. > :57:04.comfortable. He wasn't under too much pressure. . Robert didn't get
:57:05. > :57:09.going. He looked relax. His odds yesterday, they will have gone down
:57:10. > :57:13.a bit. You tipped him. The ladies final tomorrow, the youngest ever
:57:14. > :57:17.line-up for that, 18 and 24. How good does that feel for the sport?
:57:18. > :57:21.It's great for the sport especially as one of the players came through
:57:22. > :57:25.the qualifying. Katherine Rednall came through the qualifying. It's
:57:26. > :57:30.open to anyone. Anyone can join in and have a go. She qualified. It's
:57:31. > :57:35.in a final. Wonderful for an 18-year-old to have that level of
:57:36. > :57:46.exposure. The let us remind you of what is to come on the BBC. We have
:57:47. > :57:54.highlights on BBC Two at 00.20 am. Tomorrow, on the BBC, we are on the
:57:55. > :58:00.Red Button from 10.00 am, Andy Thomson against John Price and the
:58:01. > :58:03.ladies fine Rebecca Field against Katherine Rednall, the youngest
:58:04. > :58:11.line-up ever. We look forward to that. It's been a great day for the
:58:12. > :58:14.defending champions, Rebecca Field is in the final of the ladies
:58:15. > :58:17.Stewart Anderson is through to the next round. From all of us here,
:58:18. > :58:25.goodbye.
