:00:37. > :00:43.Hello everyone. Welcome to Potters. A great atmosphere and a big crowd.

:00:44. > :00:48.It's ladies final day. What a line-up. The youngest ever finals

:00:49. > :00:53.line-up for this competition. 18-year-old Catherine Rednall

:00:54. > :01:03.against Rebecca Field, the defending champion. Ladies and gentlemen, it's

:01:04. > :01:14.Norfolk's very own Rebecca Field. I tell you what, she's in the area.

:01:15. > :01:23.She's close. Great strike. She's got it! Brilliant bowl. She doesn't like

:01:24. > :01:35.it. Rebecca knows. She hasn't pushed it. She can see it. This crowd is

:01:36. > :01:41.going to erupt at the local winner. What of Rebecca's opponent? It's a

:01:42. > :01:47.teenager who should really be in the classroom now but instead this week

:01:48. > :02:01.she has been basiling on the blue rink -- dazzling on the blue rink.

:02:02. > :02:08.I have had a great week really. It's my first time here at Potters and I

:02:09. > :02:12.have loved it. It's been a great week. Happy with the way I played.

:02:13. > :02:15.Alison was obviously the favourite so win so I had no pressure. Had

:02:16. > :02:25.loads of support from independence and other clubs as well down to

:02:26. > :02:30.watch me -- Ipscich. Yeah, looking forward to it. Plays Becks a couple

:02:31. > :02:36.of months ago and it was a good play. She's such a consistent

:02:37. > :02:40.drawer, that's obviously won her the National Singles and this last year.

:02:41. > :02:44.I know if I can get the first bowl on the jack and put Becks under

:02:45. > :02:47.pressure that will be a good start. Her drawing is really good, probably

:02:48. > :02:52.one of the best out there. I don't go into any game with a game plan.

:02:53. > :02:56.Obviously like home games I know which lengths people prefer and what

:02:57. > :03:00.rinks to play on but there's none of that here so the field is strong. I

:03:01. > :03:04.go in, play what I feel happy with, what I am doing well, play the

:03:05. > :03:08.length I am playing well with and go from there.

:03:09. > :03:13.The final is a great achievement in itself. It will be brilliant to lift

:03:14. > :03:19.it but I am not thinking that far yet. I know if I bring some of my

:03:20. > :03:22.best bowls out and play as well as I can today, then hopefully I am in

:03:23. > :03:38.with a chance. This year's ladies finals should

:03:39. > :03:44.really be an East Anglia derby, between Norfolk's Rebecca Field and

:03:45. > :03:51.Katherine Rednall. It's time to get proceedings going.

:03:52. > :03:56.We are set for a cracking match this afternoon. Let's join our MC.

:03:57. > :04:02.Thank you very much. What can I say about this young lady, making a

:04:03. > :04:05.debut appearance in this event, here she is in the final, the youngest

:04:06. > :04:14.player ever in the history of the game to do so. Ladies and gentlemen,

:04:15. > :04:43.your appreciation, please, for Katherine Rednall!

:04:44. > :04:51.And can she retain this prestigious title? The defending ladies'

:04:52. > :05:25.matchplay champion, ladies and gentlemen, Rebecca Field!

:05:26. > :05:33.So we are just about all set. Let's join our commentators. Andy Thompson

:05:34. > :05:38.who partnered Katherine in the runners-up spot earlier this week is

:05:39. > :05:44.with our own David Corkhill. Thank you, Rishi. A fascinating game here

:05:45. > :05:52.with two young players. It's been a big spotlight on Katherine this week

:05:53. > :05:57.as a very young entrant. Qualified through the PBA qualifiers for this

:05:58. > :06:04.event and has come here and played extremely well. Same sort of spot

:06:05. > :06:08.that was on Rebecca Field last year. A great achievement A great

:06:09. > :06:13.achievement by both girls. Katherine has been the star so far this week.

:06:14. > :06:28.Becs has been playing well and will not let this title go easily.

:06:29. > :06:38.That's the sort of start you want in front of this very large crowd. As

:06:39. > :06:48.tradition dictates, both girls receiving some flowers from Judy

:06:49. > :06:55.Potter. That was at the start of the match.

:06:56. > :06:59.Both bowls within 18 inches, a good start for them both, settle the

:07:00. > :07:36.nerves. Really looking for the same bowl

:07:37. > :07:44.again to drop onnen to the green one. -- to drop on to her green one.

:07:45. > :07:53.This final played over two sets of 11 ends. A three-end tie-break, if

:07:54. > :08:04.required. That's a very good start here.

:08:05. > :08:11.Katherine just sticking to the draw. Trying to get a good close one. This

:08:12. > :08:15.one looks better. It's certainly got a chance with it.

:08:16. > :08:23.Needs the bowl or the jack. Got the jack, even better. Very good bowl.

:08:24. > :08:43.That brings the back green one into play, as well.

:08:44. > :09:23.Has to be very careful here. Doesn't want to touch her bowl. Happy to

:09:24. > :09:27.take a single. Get her on the card. A confident player, Katherine. I

:09:28. > :09:38.think she will be trying to draw another here.

:09:39. > :09:54.A good effort, but playing it safe. Very wise.

:09:55. > :10:04.A wonderful arena here at Potters Leisure Resort. A capacity crowd, as

:10:05. > :10:07.always for the ladies' event. In fact, every final we are packed out.

:10:08. > :10:12.Fantastic. We are getting near the end of a fortnight's bowls here and

:10:13. > :10:15.almost every day it's capacity, which is fantastic. Good for the

:10:16. > :11:06.sport of bowls. Another good opening bowl. She

:11:07. > :11:14.played very well last year. Had some really big bowls to win this title.

:11:15. > :11:18.I think the draw is the preference for both players. Play the draw shot

:11:19. > :12:22.good. When these players meet it's usually

:12:23. > :12:35.in National Championships. Quality bowlers. Both had good wins in the

:12:36. > :12:41.semifinal. Took out Julie Forrest and Alison Merrien, so they're both

:12:42. > :12:46.here on merit. I think they both clashed about a couple of weeks ago

:12:47. > :12:51.in the England Junior Singles. I think Katherine on that instance was

:12:52. > :12:55.the winner. Just got over the line, it was a good match by all accounts.

:12:56. > :13:00.This is different. This is the portable rink on television. Over

:13:01. > :13:04.1,000 people watching. Slightly different tension. I am sure less

:13:05. > :13:28.than 1,000 watching the last game. Trying to make it through to the

:13:29. > :13:32.cover bowl. That's decent. A good bowl. Covers the spot probably

:13:33. > :13:43.forcing Rebecca still on to the draw. Good thinking.

:13:44. > :13:49.Rebecca playing to her strength and that's the draw. Any correction at

:13:50. > :13:54.all and she will be very close with this. It's just pulling in, though.

:13:55. > :14:02.There it goes. If you miss that line on that

:14:03. > :14:14.forehand there's really no margin. Very punishing that. Two for

:14:15. > :14:41.Katherine, the start she wanted. Katherine has special permission to

:14:42. > :14:48.be off school for this and her good friend at school in the textile

:14:49. > :14:52.class, she's on her own, there's only two in it. Probably with a

:14:53. > :14:59.portable television, I think. I suspect so. No work done this

:15:00. > :15:06.afternoon. If you are watching, your friend is doing well!

:15:07. > :15:16.Rebecca has a big fan club, of course, being very local. Also a lot

:15:17. > :15:22.of family here with mum and dad and grandparents.

:15:23. > :15:28.I am sure the boyfriend is hiding away somewhere. Yes, he is in his

:15:29. > :15:34.usual spot. I can see him from here at the top. I am sure we will catch

:15:35. > :15:56.him later. Wayne, a big supporter of Rebecca.

:15:57. > :16:11.Good stuff. That's better. Good connection. There he is! Rebecca's

:16:12. > :16:14.boyfriend, Wayne. He sits up there, gets excited in his own way.

:16:15. > :16:32.Certainly does, a good character. A chance here now for Rebecca to pop

:16:33. > :16:47.another bowl in, put a lot of pressure on her opponent.

:16:48. > :17:00.Yeah, that's good. That's very good. I would make a change. This is an

:17:01. > :17:07.awkward one here for Rebecca. Does she draw or play the running bowl?

:17:08. > :17:13.There's still space to draw around it. I would agree.

:17:14. > :17:31.It's all about the pace. She may be struggle struggling. Well, she's had

:17:32. > :17:36.an end off, fully expect Becs to draw this. She's going to wipe out

:17:37. > :18:01.that three-shot deficit in one end. This is looking good. Very good.

:18:02. > :18:06.Doesn't really want the jack, though. She's been very unlucky. I

:18:07. > :18:17.think it's only a two now. Missing the jack, it would have been a

:18:18. > :18:22.measure for four. You can't allow for that, it just happens sometimes.

:18:23. > :18:29.Exactly. She was trying to draw another. Unfortunate she picked the

:18:30. > :19:21.jack up to Katherine's nearest. 3-2. Good start from both girls.

:19:22. > :19:32.Just a slight disturbance there. The shot clock will be held. Sometimes

:19:33. > :19:37.happens in a large crowd. Very difficult for the crowd just to stay

:19:38. > :19:45.still for two hours. You expect some movement occasionally. Hasn't put

:19:46. > :20:06.Rebecca off at all. This is a good reply. Just needs to

:20:07. > :20:17.run. It's going to be dropping short. Good try.

:20:18. > :20:24.15 inches short, that probably suggests it's not really in the way,

:20:25. > :20:34.but Rebecca happier now to play the forehand.

:20:35. > :20:37.She's certainly arriving at this, needs a little edge. It will drift

:20:38. > :21:25.away on the inside. A good effort, as well. Trying

:21:26. > :21:27.again. Just needs to run, though. Extra two feet the line would have

:21:28. > :21:49.been good. Will this get back in time? Slightly

:21:50. > :21:52.wide, I think. Good bowls, but not always looking close to the red bowl

:21:53. > :22:27.with Katherine's last delivery. How's it looking, Andy? Looking very

:22:28. > :22:31.good. Well played. Very well played. It will be a forehand runner you

:22:32. > :22:44.would expect from Katherine. I agree, looks like a forehand

:22:45. > :23:00.runner. She should be into the pack. Oh,

:23:01. > :23:06.what a bowl! Will her green bowl run off, though? It's a toucher, it's in

:23:07. > :23:12.the ditch. So it stays live. Has it gone too far? I think the other one

:23:13. > :23:24.is dead. Well played, Katherine. And no

:23:25. > :23:31.hesitation, Andy. No, she didn't. That's the shot she has that

:23:32. > :23:37.probably Rebecca doesn't. Executed well. The shot that you got her to

:23:38. > :23:41.play was on the backhand in the opposite direction and she was bang

:23:42. > :23:46.on target. Exactly. That's what I am saying. I heard prior to coming up

:23:47. > :23:51.to this event she's very good with a running bowl. Although a talented

:23:52. > :24:01.draw player, it's good to see she has all the shots.

:24:02. > :24:07.Rebecca showed in last year's final she also can play the running bowl.

:24:08. > :24:13.She played a couple of absolute cracking ones. Got her out of a lot

:24:14. > :25:04.of trouble. The all-round game is certainly within these two players.

:25:05. > :25:33.Good correction here from Rebecca. Will it hold up? Yes, that's good

:25:34. > :25:39.enough. Can't change much from the first two. Just needs to tap one of

:25:40. > :25:54.them down. Just missed going through.

:25:55. > :26:20.Just over and I wonder will Katherine be tempted with this? Only

:26:21. > :26:25.one bowl. You think she probably will just draw. A shot to take the

:26:26. > :26:29.two bowls out is available. It's a temptation here for Katherine. I

:26:30. > :26:35.think it will just be a draw. Draw on the forehand. There we see. It's

:26:36. > :26:45.a tight measure. Might even be Katherine's. So just a draw.

:26:46. > :26:49.Close with this. Any drop on the bowl will secure the shot. There it

:26:50. > :27:04.is. Lovely stuff. Any movement on the green bowl is

:27:05. > :27:09.always going to produce the shot. There we go. One to Katherine.

:27:10. > :27:16.Right, Rebecca, are you going to be producing the heavy bowls now or

:27:17. > :27:22.sticking to the draw? Yes, positive. Looking for the three bowls out of

:27:23. > :27:28.the head. She's close. Well played! That's what she did last year, as

:27:29. > :27:32.well. Played in a controlled way. That running bowl is also available

:27:33. > :27:40.to her. That was a really good turnover. A great strike. It just

:27:41. > :27:43.shows not a lot of weight. She played running bowl as opposed to

:27:44. > :28:22.the drive but executed it really well. Took all three bowls out. 4-4.

:28:23. > :28:28.It was good to see there was no hesitation there on behalf of

:28:29. > :28:33.Rebecca because only had the one bowl on the head. She had to get all

:28:34. > :28:38.three really. She played it on the safe high side, that's why she was

:28:39. > :28:53.always going to be taking green bowls. She really played it well.

:28:54. > :29:00.That last bowl forcing Katherine on to the forehand side. Hasn't played

:29:01. > :29:06.many bowls down this side during the week. I am sure she's practised it

:29:07. > :29:13.on this side and knows it still well. Any side for Katherine, I

:29:14. > :29:19.think. Certainly doesn't seem to matter, does it? A lot of young

:29:20. > :29:25.players playing bowls, of course, both men and women. Under-25 teams

:29:26. > :29:29.is littered with talent. It really is. All countries, all the home

:29:30. > :29:34.countries produce a lot of good young players. I am amazed they're

:29:35. > :29:38.not in the qualifiers to be honest, because this is what's available to

:29:39. > :29:41.them. I think after this event I am sure we will see more ladies

:29:42. > :29:46.entering the competitions and even the young men, as well. It's time to

:29:47. > :30:17.get yourselves on this portable rink. It's a fantastic experience.

:30:18. > :30:31.a nice, wide angle. It just needs to stop. It is running through. It is

:30:32. > :30:40.good. If this goes in, the pressure is on again.

:30:41. > :30:44.She almost certainly will drop shot. I'd think she might need to revise

:30:45. > :31:10.that idea. She has fooled us. Rebecca is now in a bit of trouble

:31:11. > :31:15.again. She is three down. She is on the backhand. She is playing a

:31:16. > :31:20.running bowl. She is far too wide with this one.

:31:21. > :31:36.That is the only problem. If you do miss comic you will lose heavily. )

:31:37. > :31:42.it was the right shot to play. She played a good run up on the forehand

:31:43. > :31:56.at the previous end. A chance for Catherine to score a four. That was

:31:57. > :32:03.well played. A great end of bowls for the young women. The 18-year-old

:32:04. > :32:41.picks up a full house. She is up to 8-4.

:32:42. > :32:48.She did not look too happy when she let that one go. She looks to be on

:32:49. > :32:55.a decent line. It is on the weight really.

:32:56. > :33:56.A little bit of space. She'd just over corrected.

:33:57. > :34:05.I thought she was going to use that one. The edge would have brought her

:34:06. > :34:13.in at the perfect angle. Katherine wastes no time. Speed bowls. She

:34:14. > :34:21.would be good at it. She is good here. Again, it is a little bit

:34:22. > :34:28.through. It is counting. Not three shots. They are all counting. This

:34:29. > :34:41.will add more pressure to Rebecca. She needs to have a good one.

:34:42. > :34:49.Again, close to the outside red. She got a touch this time. All any touch

:34:50. > :35:03.at all with the last two deliveries. Katherine wasting no time, up and

:35:04. > :35:08.down the brink. She is 18, isn't she? She has plenty of energy. By

:35:09. > :35:18.tobacco Rebecca is in a hit of trouble. -- Rebecca is in a bit of

:35:19. > :35:23.trouble. That is the best she can do. This is

:35:24. > :35:53.a massive pressure shot now. I think Rebecca has maybe

:35:54. > :35:58.overcompensated with this one. It is always difficult. When you make a

:35:59. > :36:01.correction, it hurts in the portable rink. I think she is dropping her

:36:02. > :36:21.second four. Suddenly, within ten minutes from

:36:22. > :36:51.4-4, she is up to 12-4. That is a good cushion.

:36:52. > :37:37.That was a great reply. She is not letting go, is she? Quite rightly

:37:38. > :38:13.so. Katherine is top of her game. One green, there are a small gap.

:38:14. > :38:18.Very small gap. It will get into millimetres by the sounds of it. It

:38:19. > :38:23.is enough to tell Katherine any touching bowl and the bowl will

:38:24. > :38:43.scoot along. That is handy. She has. There could to play the

:38:44. > :38:50.awkward shot. Once again, I think she is under. -- she has forced

:38:51. > :39:35.Rebecca. Well, Katherine, it was not really

:39:36. > :39:41.what was required. There is no back position for Rebecca. She is one

:39:42. > :39:46.down. I really feel this could be worse if she attacks it. She is

:39:47. > :39:53.forcing Rebecca still into the draw. I do not think the draw line is on.

:39:54. > :40:02.Once again she has played it under. I can understand really. I am not

:40:03. > :40:05.convinced Becker has been in any way positive because there is nothing

:40:06. > :40:28.she could do. -- Rebecca. Katherine used to play a lot of

:40:29. > :40:33.football. She had to make a choice between football and bowls full she

:40:34. > :40:40.decided on bowls. I will tell you what, if she can keep this going,

:40:41. > :40:43.she will reap the rewards of that. Being a young player, the

:40:44. > :40:49.opportunities are immense, aren't they? They can travel the world. She

:40:50. > :40:54.has been chosen for the England outdoor squad. That is the first

:40:55. > :40:59.part of the stepping ladder for Katherine, getting in the England

:41:00. > :41:04.team. Then there are Commonwealth Games, World Championships, many

:41:05. > :41:13.trips to be had. I think she will be taking part in these in the near

:41:14. > :41:15.future. The same can be said for Rebecca. She is in exactly the same

:41:16. > :41:42.situation. That was a good correction from

:41:43. > :41:51.Katherine. That is the winner. It is relentless. Asking a lot of

:41:52. > :42:07.questions from the defending champion. She has had to produce big

:42:08. > :42:20.bowls. At the moment, Katherine as the first set already.

:42:21. > :42:29.She really just get on with the game. It just shows you you can play

:42:30. > :42:33.the game at this pace and very successfully. You do not need to

:42:34. > :42:40.take five, ten minutes over choosing the shot. The shot clock has spent

:42:41. > :42:51.the game up a bit. This is her normal style. On the mark, get the

:42:52. > :42:57.bowl away. She is down on a good line with this one. She has a good

:42:58. > :43:05.chance and needs a clean jack. She has an edge. She could have turned

:43:06. > :43:14.it for a double. One bolt to come. -- one bowl to come.

:43:15. > :43:25.A good position for Katherine. Mother and father and grandmother.

:43:26. > :43:34.Very proud of their daughter at the moment. I think they are all the

:43:35. > :43:35.time, to be honest with you. Katherine is a very confident young

:43:36. > :43:54.lady. This is good. That was just over. Test a chance

:43:55. > :44:00.here. -- just a chance here. Rebecca has two try it. Scoring one is not

:44:01. > :44:04.enough. As the set comes to a conclusion, sometimes a player must

:44:05. > :44:17.take a chance. She needs to take a chance here.

:44:18. > :44:27.No margin of error with that sort of weight. That was a long shot. She

:44:28. > :44:35.took the set comfortably. She was good for it.

:44:36. > :44:42.I think Rebecca was quicker out of the traps and played the better

:44:43. > :44:46.bowls. Katherine has been the more dominant player. Her parents and

:44:47. > :44:53.grandparents will be delighted with the first set. One more said. --

:44:54. > :45:50.set. These matches are played like to

:45:51. > :45:55.many battles. 83 and tie-break separates the players. Most

:45:56. > :45:59.players, if they lose the first set badly, it should not really affect

:46:00. > :46:09.them. It is another game to start afresh. Start the second set well.

:46:10. > :46:17.They are not worried about the short bowl. Lots of players would have

:46:18. > :46:20.moved to the open forehand. It is not always necessary to keep

:46:21. > :46:24.changing the hands. This is what has happened with Rebecca. She is

:46:25. > :46:36.getting forced onto the forehand too often and not playing it too well.

:46:37. > :46:44.This is better. A good change. A good bowl. It may be worth

:46:45. > :46:50.remembering, the next time in this direction...

:46:51. > :47:00.Katherine is being forced into this shot. I do not think she has a

:47:01. > :47:08.choice. The drawn forehand. She has mixed it up a bit. The first two

:47:09. > :47:20.ends in any set are so critical. You do not want to lose big counts.

:47:21. > :47:30.Oh, well! That will not have too much of an effect. She can go

:47:31. > :47:35.between the two bowls with a confident, strong weight. This shot

:47:36. > :47:42.is so hard to play. On an indoor carpet, most people would the

:47:43. > :47:44.confident. It is such a difficult shot. Katherine has been forced into

:47:45. > :47:57.it. She must be a bit careful. Rebecca must make sure she is

:47:58. > :48:27.through the head with this bowl. I do not think Katherine can play

:48:28. > :48:31.too heavy. I think just trying to play this is just hard. She does not

:48:32. > :48:41.want to be five, six feet through the head.

:48:42. > :49:01.Well, she got away with it. That was fortuitous.

:49:02. > :49:10.She was very fortunate. She pushed the edge on to the one bowl that was

:49:11. > :49:14.in there. I do not think Rebecca will be too happy about that but it

:49:15. > :49:19.is all part of the game. We all get them and we all get them against

:49:20. > :49:27.us. She is very fortunate. Sometimes you get these wraps. Rebecca, so

:49:28. > :49:30.important that she started the set well. Once again it is Katherine

:49:31. > :49:45.starting the second set better. That is Wayne, Rebecca 's voice

:49:46. > :50:22.friend. -- boyfriend. He is not shy about coming forward

:50:23. > :50:29.with his support. It is great to know you have that in the crowd. It

:50:30. > :50:34.makes a big difference to a player. Wayne is a good supporter of

:50:35. > :50:37.Rebecca. He realises at the moment his girlfriend is being outplayed.

:50:38. > :51:18.Things have to change quickly. Well, that is way board. -- wayward.

:51:19. > :51:21.Rebecca needs to try to calm down a bit and get a good close bowl.

:51:22. > :51:29.Catherine will be relentless. Well played! That is good. She

:51:30. > :52:09.changed her hand. He will be happier. He is nodding

:52:10. > :52:21.his head saying, that is better. Come on, girl!

:52:22. > :52:31.That bowl is a touch. I do not think this will be an opportunity to drive

:52:32. > :52:47.this bowl out. She needs to turn the jack around the corner.

:52:48. > :53:01.That was definitely the wrong shot. She could have taken her own bowls

:53:02. > :53:05.out. She was hitting the target. The jack would probably have gone off

:53:06. > :53:11.and Rebecca would have had an easy chance of two or three. I do not

:53:12. > :53:12.think she played the right shot. A chance here for Rebecca to score a

:53:13. > :53:34.double. She has only played one good bowl in

:53:35. > :53:41.this hand. She got the shot. Come on, that is what Wayne said. Come

:53:42. > :53:42.on! A different tactic from Rebecca. She should be trying something

:53:43. > :53:54.different. The mat is back on the tee. That is

:53:55. > :54:00.one difference. Will it be short or long?

:54:01. > :54:08.He has too tried to shake Katherine Rednall. It has gone maximum. That

:54:09. > :54:45.is just short. The tea mark indicates the centre of

:54:46. > :55:01.the rink. -- T-mark. On the portable rink, it is three metres.

:55:02. > :55:09.If they put those back a metre, it'll be very hard to draw to them.

:55:10. > :55:16.It is quite a slick surface. The players must find the spots with the

:55:17. > :55:25.bowls. They moved them slightly in. This is better from Rebecca. She was

:55:26. > :55:34.unlucky. It is always that bounce, isn't it? She will be happy that is

:55:35. > :55:48.a better situation for her. She is building a better head.

:55:49. > :56:05.It is the turn of Katherine to over correct.

:56:06. > :57:07.A chance here for Rebecca. It really is just a draw. She hopes to trail

:57:08. > :57:09.the jack about four, five inches. She is going for the bowl out of the

:57:10. > :57:21.head. That was not the right choice. That

:57:22. > :57:28.was only one option. She had to get the bowl clean. She had two options,

:57:29. > :57:39.jack or bowl. The drive is hard. She was doubling up on the opportunities

:57:40. > :57:43.by playing more controlled weight. A chance for Katherine to draw

:57:44. > :57:53.another. She will be a little bit cagey with this bowl. She is out on

:57:54. > :57:57.the white line. I do not think she is running quite right. A smile on

:57:58. > :58:06.her face going down the rink. She will not be too worried about that.

:58:07. > :58:15.What an arena to play bowls then! Every young player in the country

:58:16. > :58:25.would want to play here. Get these subscriptions in.

:58:26. > :58:35.There is Brian and Judy Potter. They have the most wonderful dog. It

:58:36. > :58:41.looks so slow, easy and relaxed but, believe me, it is a working dog.

:58:42. > :58:47.Good to see Brian and Judy here again.

:58:48. > :58:54.It is a different animal when it is out across the fields.

:58:55. > :59:20.Dogs everywhere, David. Absolutely, yes.

:59:21. > :59:31.These dogs are actually 20 metres apart. Let's hope they do not see

:59:32. > :59:45.each other. I think they are fine. They are extremely trained.

:59:46. > :59:53.That's good bowling. If we do get the shot clock going off on this and

:59:54. > :00:00.the hooter goes you might get a flinch of an eyebrow from the dogs

:00:01. > :00:06.maybe, that's all. They won't be disturbed. Back to the green. I am

:00:07. > :00:15.afraid it's still not looking good here for Rebecca. I would be tempted

:00:16. > :00:17.to move on this, on to the backhand. But sticking with the forehand,

:00:18. > :00:23.which she prefers. This one looks like it's going to go

:00:24. > :00:45.deep. Yeah, there it goes. Backhand bowl might have been more

:00:46. > :00:49.advantage here. She pulled that across her body, that's never going

:00:50. > :00:52.to hold up. You sort of know when a player play that is sort of shot

:00:53. > :00:56.that they're feeling things aren't going their way. And to be fair to

:00:57. > :01:01.Rebecca, I can understand why she's doing it, she's trying to shake up

:01:02. > :01:05.the game. She's trying to also get her own game going. Yeah, quite

:01:06. > :01:10.right. Sometimes if things are not going well on the draw sometimes you

:01:11. > :01:16.try to disturb your opponent. But the bowl was tight from the hand.

:01:17. > :01:20.Problems for the defending champion. She's on the backhand now. I think

:01:21. > :01:26.this is a better shot for Katherine, to push the bowl out wide. Let it

:01:27. > :01:32.dip back to the red one. Yeah, keep it away from the jack. Looking for a

:01:33. > :01:40.position. That's very good. Got to be a little

:01:41. > :01:45.careful here. Doesn't want to be a couple of bowls wide and take her

:01:46. > :01:46.own out, she would drop a four. Two down is still not a disaster. So got

:01:47. > :01:54.to be a bit careful here. Might go back to the draw. I think

:01:55. > :02:11.she is. Sensible. She's a measured player, Rebecca.

:02:12. > :02:21.That's just over the line. Another double.

:02:22. > :02:29.Many ways Cath ways -- Katherine is dictating the pace of this because

:02:30. > :02:37.she's winning a lot of ends. You have to say she's in total control

:02:38. > :02:42.at the moment. The game could change over one good end, I am sure Rebecca

:02:43. > :02:43.is aware of that but at the moment Katherine is putting too many close

:02:44. > :03:18.bowls in. That's another good starter. Been

:03:19. > :03:20.going less than an hour and we are nearly halfway through the second

:03:21. > :03:37.set. Once again Rebecca forced on to the

:03:38. > :03:45.forehand side. Don't think she would be playing that by choice.

:03:46. > :03:50.Katherine's opening bowl forcing her on to the fore. Fore.

:03:51. > :04:03.That's a bit lengthy. We should see the correction with this one.

:04:04. > :04:11.I don't think there's much wrong with this if you use the mat, but I

:04:12. > :04:20.think the margins are a bit tighter, a bit more difficult. I don't think

:04:21. > :04:25.Rebecca's confident whatsoever on the fore forehand on this direction.

:04:26. > :04:29.At the moment we talked about this wonderful place to play bowls and it

:04:30. > :04:33.certainly is, however, when you are struggling it's sometimes the worst

:04:34. > :04:40.place to play bowls. I think that's what's happening with Rebecca. We

:04:41. > :04:45.have all suffered that, Andy. I still think there's time for Rebecca

:04:46. > :04:50.if she can get her game going. She played really well in the semifinal.

:04:51. > :04:56.I agree there's certainly time. But she's facing pressure after

:04:57. > :05:01.pressure, end upon end here. She's dropping shot, as well. Two green

:05:02. > :05:05.and a green bowl against her at the back. This should really just be

:05:06. > :05:24.another draw. If this one falls back, it's number

:05:25. > :05:28.three. Her father is one of the best draw bowlers in the country as a

:05:29. > :05:33.lead for England for many years, and he's obviously instilled that into

:05:34. > :05:36.his daughter. She's gone one step further, though, she's got the

:05:37. > :05:41.running bowl that maybe John would never have much opportunity to use.

:05:42. > :05:45.John could play, John's always been an international lead so he excels

:05:46. > :05:47.at the draw. It's a specialist position. It's a great position to

:05:48. > :05:59.play lead. Perfect line. Perfect line but she's

:06:00. > :06:06.not here. Dear me, that's a pity. Well, not too far away but it's

:06:07. > :06:14.another double. Start Starting to slide. See a bit of confidence

:06:15. > :06:26.sliding away from Rebecca, as well. It's only the two.

:06:27. > :06:35.Calling out to the umpire, who will sort this out. The third official is

:06:36. > :06:44.Brian Daly. He is on shot clock duty. He will make sure the shot

:06:45. > :06:55.clock starts and stops at the right time. Don't think there's been much

:06:56. > :07:04.need here. I have marked two on my card. Well, actual actually on my

:07:05. > :07:15.book of notes. Two shots to Katherine Rednall.

:07:16. > :07:24.How many books do you have now then? Too many, don't worry, you will have

:07:25. > :07:31.at least a couple of paragraphs when I I write my book! One of the

:07:32. > :07:37.players that's cost me world titles, Andy Thompson! Can't believe that.

:07:38. > :07:43.Is it one or two semifinals in the pairs? Yes, that's when you used to

:07:44. > :07:54.play good bowls! Now I am just happy to turn up.

:07:55. > :08:17.Just on the wrong side again. She's not far away from having a much

:08:18. > :08:21.better second set. It's just the wrong side of the bowls at the

:08:22. > :08:26.moment. Yeah, Katherine's really had good opening bowls. It's put

:08:27. > :08:37.pressure on right away. Rebecca has not been too far away. Again this is

:08:38. > :08:43.another good bowl. Haven't been too many errors by Katherine in this

:08:44. > :08:48.match. She's reaping the rewards of playing good draw shots.

:08:49. > :08:53.Irrespective of the fact she's good at the runners.

:08:54. > :09:06.Lovely line with this one. Got a chance. But just dropping again.

:09:07. > :09:10.There is a saying in bowls, you are half a yard away from a great game.

:09:11. > :09:14.Exactly, that's what's happening here. A yard away from being good.

:09:15. > :09:18.The signs are when you are under pressure, David, the tendency is to

:09:19. > :09:23.drop shot and that's what's happening here. Well, that's just

:09:24. > :09:28.perfect. Again it's so difficult here for Rebecca to score. She's two

:09:29. > :09:35.down. Her own bowl is in front. All on the line. No target to go looking

:09:36. > :09:43.for in terms of weight. This one looks... It looks under to me.

:09:44. > :09:49.There it goes, short and tight. Not sure if it's worth Katherine to go

:09:50. > :09:56.near this to be truthful You feel a little bit here for Rebecca. I don't

:09:57. > :09:58.think she's enjoying this. It's very hard to enjoy it when it's all going

:09:59. > :10:05.wrong. Any time there's been a little bit

:10:06. > :10:14.of luck it hasn't been coming the way of the Norfolk lady.

:10:15. > :10:20.On the backhand. Looking to drop this right back into centre line.

:10:21. > :10:25.She's waving at it to come back in. That's going to leave a shoulder.

:10:26. > :10:31.It's probably another shot. It's keeping the pressure on, Andy. I

:10:32. > :10:34.think it's probably forced rebeak ka into attacking -- Rebecca into

:10:35. > :10:38.attacking. This is a difficult shot to manufacture. She's going to have

:10:39. > :10:46.to be through this. Can't afford to drop shot again.

:10:47. > :10:54.She should be making sure. She didn't like that. Pushed it out

:10:55. > :11:00.wide. That's why. Any extra weight and the bowl drifts right past the

:11:01. > :11:04.head. Well, she played the right weight. Unfortunately, she didn't

:11:05. > :11:13.find the line. Katherine's looking at this. It's definitely two. Not

:11:14. > :11:21.sure about the third one, though. My goodness me, that's got to be close

:11:22. > :11:29.for the third. That bowl did drop in. That really is a disaster for

:11:30. > :11:38.the defending champion. She's now 9-1 down after six ends. Look at

:11:39. > :11:42.that run of shots. Well, Katherine, I can tell you at the start of this

:11:43. > :11:49.tournament was long odds to win this. There's a lot of local people

:11:50. > :11:54.I am aware put a few bob on her. I heard she stopped taking bets on

:11:55. > :12:01.her. That's what I heard. Exactly. She was big at the start. Her odds

:12:02. > :12:05.have been dropping every game. I arrived actually, I was getting out

:12:06. > :12:10.of the taxi going through the doors and John met me at the door with

:12:11. > :12:17.Katherine and introduced me. I said I have been reading about Katherine

:12:18. > :12:22.in the Bowls International magazine and knew she was coming into this

:12:23. > :12:27.event on the back of big wins. She plays in many of the men's

:12:28. > :12:30.tournaments, I wouldn't say a seasoned campaigner, but used to

:12:31. > :12:37.playing competitive bowls at top level. This is good. Well done,

:12:38. > :13:07.Becs. Her friend will be sitting in school

:13:08. > :13:15.thinking what's going on here? Is this really my mate? Yeah, she's

:13:16. > :13:19.doing well. You might have half the school watching this actually!

:13:20. > :13:27.This is a good bowl, Rebecca. Through the gap. It's not her day.

:13:28. > :13:32.Exactly, David. I could see it happening from about four yards

:13:33. > :13:38.away, Andy. When it's not your day, I am afraid it's just not a good

:13:39. > :13:44.one. Never mind. Two good bowls from Rebecca. It looks like another shot

:13:45. > :13:51.almost coming in here. This is just... Oh! Well, you can just sit

:13:52. > :13:56.back and admire it, that's all you can do. She's having an absolutely

:13:57. > :14:08.blistering match. The defending champion is really up against it. A

:14:09. > :14:13.star of the future. That was a little smile there from Katherine up

:14:14. > :14:18.to her mum and dad. Really there's not a lot of option here, is there?

:14:19. > :14:32.No, I think she's going to have to be running into this. The forehand

:14:33. > :14:36.drive is probably the best. One way or another she's going to have to

:14:37. > :14:41.play into it. It's a hard draw to make.

:14:42. > :14:47.A slight disturbance. Rebecca putting the bowl down. I think it

:14:48. > :14:53.was a shout of encouragement actually. I think they want to see

:14:54. > :14:59.this game continuing. She's sticking to the draw. That's tough. She's

:15:00. > :15:07.playing the running bowl on the backhand. That is a very hard shot

:15:08. > :15:13.to play, just to try and draw in there. I can understand her playing

:15:14. > :15:16.it and in normal circumstances you would totally agree with it but

:15:17. > :15:22.everything's been going wrong for her today. Sometimes you just have

:15:23. > :15:29.to open heads up. She knows that herself. I am sure she's done this

:15:30. > :15:33.to other people. Exactly, I am sure she has.

:15:34. > :15:42.Katherine's keeping away from the head and rightly so. She knows two

:15:43. > :16:13.more shots here would be one hand on the trophy.

:16:14. > :16:21.Sticking to the draw. It's coming back now! Now it's got a chance.

:16:22. > :16:29.Well played, Rebecca. Great girl. That's the way to do it. Held her

:16:30. > :16:37.nerve. Big cheer of the day for that one. The crowd appreciated that. Two

:16:38. > :16:42.shots against Rebecca. Last bowl, pushes the bowl out, well played.

:16:43. > :16:50.Yes, it was a good reaction from her, as well. Time is running out,

:16:51. > :16:57.but still four ends to go, Andy. She needs at least another couple on

:16:58. > :17:04.this end. Yes. The game is never over.

:17:05. > :17:10.Needs a good opener. Tried to force Katherine into running bowls, but

:17:11. > :17:16.Katherine's playing so well it's going to be difficult for Becs to

:17:17. > :17:29.hold on or try and win this now. But you never know.

:17:30. > :17:34.That's only the second time she scored in 11 ends. A good sequence

:17:35. > :17:43.of shots for Katherine. First bowl short. This one's

:17:44. > :18:07.creeping in. Certainly on a good line with this

:18:08. > :18:32.one. Didn't push it. Katherine, have you got the running

:18:33. > :18:34.to get past the red ones? It's like a halfback line now. Awkward to get

:18:35. > :19:00.around. It's more the debris at the front,

:19:01. > :19:04.it's pushing into that bowl. Didn't have the weight anyway. Katherine

:19:05. > :19:05.has a shoulder to play off on the forehand. She can use her own bowl

:19:06. > :19:19.to get in very close. This needs to hurry a little bit. If

:19:20. > :19:22.it hurries past her own she's good. Well, a definite one. It looks like

:19:23. > :19:30.two. I think there is a case here for

:19:31. > :19:38.running right through the middle of this.

:19:39. > :19:45.Certainly not a lot of choice there the way it's sitting with the front

:19:46. > :19:49.bowls. No back position, has to try and make her way through. Playing to

:19:50. > :19:54.her strength and that's the draw shot. It looks hard when you are

:19:55. > :20:00.struggling for pace. She did it the last end. I think she's done it

:20:01. > :20:07.again this time. There it goes. Well played. Does it again.

:20:08. > :20:15.Katherine will realise that just one shot, she will be happy to lose one

:20:16. > :20:20.shot in the next two ends. Yeah, nothing adventurous here I wouldn't

:20:21. > :20:27.think from Katherine. One down is quite good for her.

:20:28. > :20:40.On the mat, one-and-a-half seconds, gone. This bowl is going to try and

:20:41. > :20:45.pull back in between the green ones. Dropping slight slightly wide. One

:20:46. > :20:51.down. She will be happy. Katherine using her head here. She's prepared

:20:52. > :20:55.to give Rebecca a single and not try too hard to push into heads. She

:20:56. > :21:06.knows two more singles and that's it. It's over.

:21:07. > :21:14.Rebecca really has to be looking to score two or three here, David.

:21:15. > :21:58.That's the only way. Or it's almost all over. It has to be multiples.

:21:59. > :22:29.The line was good. It's dropping. Quickly forces Katherine on to the

:22:30. > :22:35.forehand. Every time she's forced on to this forehand she's played it

:22:36. > :22:37.well. Got a bit of work to do with this one, though. Just slightly

:22:38. > :22:59.over. This one slides in, it could make

:23:00. > :23:06.number three and then things start to change. Yeah, exactly.

:23:07. > :23:11.Katherine's not thinking too long and hard about this. Picks a bowl

:23:12. > :23:15.up, I will just draw the shot. And here we come. Looks like the winner

:23:16. > :23:19.coming in. This looks good. This is going to take away all the

:23:20. > :23:23.opportunities now. That's it. She's pushing it in, she realises she

:23:24. > :23:30.wants to get in behind the red bowls.

:23:31. > :23:53.Does she gamble and try and push bowl on to bowl? Time-out here.

:23:54. > :24:02.A gap between the jack and red bowl there. Never an easy shot. She's

:24:03. > :24:06.playing on the high side. This will never come back. Katherine's going

:24:07. > :24:13.to have a shot here for the championship. If she draws this, it

:24:14. > :24:20.will be 11-3 and there's no way back on the last two ends. If she

:24:21. > :24:26.doesn't, I reckon it will be over the next end anyway. I agree. 15

:24:27. > :24:32.inches to become the World Matchplay Champion in the ladies. The family

:24:33. > :24:36.just ready to go mad at this. It has been a wonderful exhibition, I have

:24:37. > :24:41.to say, by Katherine Rednall. You don't get players playing at this

:24:42. > :24:46.level and this well... It's all over. That looks like it's very

:24:47. > :24:51.close to number two. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Rebecca just

:24:52. > :25:00.shakes hands with this. But she's taken one out. That's absolutely

:25:01. > :25:06.definitely two. It's all over. Two shots. Well, Rebecca Field,

:25:07. > :25:11.defending champion losing out on this year's final of the World

:25:12. > :25:20.Matchplay Ladies Singles. I have to say Katherine, the 18-year-old from

:25:21. > :25:25.Ipswich was superb. The family are very, very happy and so they should

:25:26. > :25:34.be. She was cool, she was calm. She was brilliant. That's the trophy

:25:35. > :25:41.that will be coming her way with a tidy cheque, as well. Really it

:25:42. > :25:46.doesn't get much better than that for an 18-year-old. Exactly. Taking

:25:47. > :25:51.the applause, rightly so. A wonderful champion. Great bowls all

:25:52. > :26:02.week. She will be over the moon. Yes.

:26:03. > :26:08.And this really was the telling point when she started to score very

:26:09. > :26:13.heavily in the 6th end. There was a four, followed by another four.

:26:14. > :26:19.There is the second consecutive four. That killed off the first set.

:26:20. > :26:26.Going from 4-4 to 12-4. It was all over at that point. The second set

:26:27. > :26:33.at 6-1 on the fifth end. Just drops this in for another three. 9-1.

:26:34. > :26:36.Second set virtually over. But Katherine was without a doubt

:26:37. > :26:50.absolutely superb in this final. You see that by the match stats.

:26:51. > :26:59.Remarkable scoreline for a final. The young lady was brilliant today.

:27:00. > :27:02.Here I am with Katherine and Rebecca. We will get to Katherine in

:27:03. > :27:06.a moment. Rebecca, you are the defending champion. You gave it your

:27:07. > :27:11.best shot. What do you feel happened to you today? I don't know. Set off

:27:12. > :27:15.well and Katherine continual le put me under pressure. It's harder

:27:16. > :27:18.coming back as a defending champion than somebody to take the Crown off

:27:19. > :27:21.somebody else, that's for sure. Disappointed with how I played

:27:22. > :27:25.towards the end, I wish I could have kept up what I started. Hopefully

:27:26. > :27:35.you can come back and put in another big challenge again next year. Well

:27:36. > :27:39.played, but commiserations. Well, Katherine, the youngest ever ladies

:27:40. > :27:45.champion. I said at the start of the show that you should be in double

:27:46. > :27:49.textiles at the moment. Which one is better? Definitely this, yeah, I

:27:50. > :27:54.can't believe it. I am really over the moon. Tell me about the start

:27:55. > :27:58.you made because you seemed for someone so young to have very little

:27:59. > :28:03.nerves and just on the button straightaway. I came in as I sort of

:28:04. > :28:07.would any other game. I knew it was going to be tough playing against

:28:08. > :28:10.Becs but I thought as long as I can get the first bowl on the jack and

:28:11. > :28:17.keep drawing away I would be all right. Well played to zap becs, it

:28:18. > :28:21.was -- to Becs, it was an amazing final. You are 18, you have a lot of

:28:22. > :28:24.success under your belt. You are still in the under-25 finals, I

:28:25. > :28:28.think. Your family are here, your dad of course is an excellent

:28:29. > :28:32.bowler. How much do you want to thank people helping you get here

:28:33. > :28:35.today? Oh, thank you to everyone that's come to support me today and

:28:36. > :28:39.over the past week, just thank you so much. My family have been here

:28:40. > :28:44.the whole week. Mum and dad managed to get time off, so thank you to

:28:45. > :28:48.their bosses for letting them have it off. Yeah, just thanks to

:28:49. > :28:52.everyone for the support I have had, it's been ridiculous really. You

:28:53. > :28:56.were telling me upstairs before you came down to play in the final that

:28:57. > :29:01.in your class now is just you and one other girl who shares that

:29:02. > :29:06.class, Ebony and you wanted to send a message to her. She told me to

:29:07. > :29:13.give her a shout out on camera, so hi. Ebony, it's no wonder your

:29:14. > :29:19.friend isn't there today because she's just become the 2014 World

:29:20. > :29:33.Indoor Bowls Ladies Champion. Congratulations, Katherine Rednall!

:29:34. > :29:38.Well, there is a new star on the bowls scene and that's Katherine.

:29:39. > :29:41.The presentation is just about to take place. It's time for us to join

:29:42. > :30:00.our Mc again, Richard. Will you please welcome Brian

:30:01. > :30:15.Potter, MBA? And, to receive home-run 's up

:30:16. > :30:35.check, your appreciation Rebecca Field. -- her runners up cheque.

:30:36. > :30:45.And now receiving a Langham glass goblet, a check, and the title of

:30:46. > :31:08.2014 ladies matchplay champion, give it up for Katherine Rednall.

:31:09. > :31:18.How about this young lady from Suffolk? One more time, the 2014

:31:19. > :31:50.Ladies Matchplay Champion, Katherine Rednall.

:31:51. > :31:57.What a magnificent effort from Katherine Rednall, 18 years old and

:31:58. > :32:04.looking so nervous. What a great day it has been for her. We're going to

:32:05. > :32:05.bring you a match from tomorrow night between Darren Burnett and

:32:06. > :32:27.Greg Harlow. -- yesterday evening. Taking the option of a 24.5 beta

:32:28. > :32:35.jack length. He feels confident he can get there. It is the last end of

:32:36. > :32:40.the tie-break. An intriguing match. The scoreline shows that in many

:32:41. > :32:46.ways. Darren Burnett, the last time he played in this direction, killed

:32:47. > :32:48.the end, so he is not allowed to kill any more. He has used up that

:32:49. > :33:20.option. Always a bit of a gamble, John. Do

:33:21. > :33:23.you take the jack or do you give it away? That was a big opportunity for

:33:24. > :33:33.Darren. It is fair to say that Greg Harlow

:33:34. > :33:41.would have been the favourite coming into this match. He was playing

:33:42. > :33:44.exceptionally well. Darren Burnett is a very dangerous opponent.

:33:45. > :33:53.Absolutely loads of experience. All over the world.

:33:54. > :34:07.Greg is on a drive for the jack as well.

:34:08. > :34:22.It looks like the bowl. He dipped in so quickly. I thought he was just

:34:23. > :34:29.inside. He is in a bit of trouble. You can still nominate for the end.

:34:30. > :34:34.It does not matter how many times you nominate. You can only complete

:34:35. > :34:39.the dead end once. And it has done that. What is he do? The back

:34:40. > :34:46.position is all mixed up. White pepper he has the deepest green on

:34:47. > :34:53.the edge of the ditch. -- he has the deepest green on the edge of the

:34:54. > :34:58.ditch. He will lie with the next green bowl. He needs one in there.

:34:59. > :35:06.It does not want to be too close. It is a good bowl.

:35:07. > :35:18.I think it will drop in for second. It has. He has the re-spot position

:35:19. > :35:24.on one side. It would not be a bad option if he got on to the re-spot.

:35:25. > :35:29.It is not easy to beat. It is 18 inches wide if he gets it. I have

:35:30. > :35:39.not heard him nominate a game for the drive. He is going again. --

:35:40. > :35:49.again for the drive. The best option is the kill. He is absolutely right

:35:50. > :35:56.to go game. He was very close. -- go again. He has come down on the line.

:35:57. > :36:01.He has the bowl. He took his own way. The green bowl sits in. Darren

:36:02. > :36:07.Burnett takes the third end of the tie-break.

:36:08. > :36:14.He knocks out the world number seven. It is a big win for Darren

:36:15. > :36:19.Burnett. Greg Harlow will be very disappointed. When you get to the

:36:20. > :36:22.tie-break, anything is possible. In the end, Darren Burnett wins two

:36:23. > :36:34.sets to one. Congratulations to Darren Burnett. A

:36:35. > :36:39.game performance sees him through to the quarterfinals. Next, a match is

:36:40. > :36:53.about to take place between Paul Foster and Danny Denison.

:36:54. > :36:59.Qualifier Danny Denison is a man who courts lady luck in his sporting

:37:00. > :37:05.life and beyond. He might need the rub of the green to see of the world

:37:06. > :37:08.'s top player, Paul Foster. The gambling man is against but still

:37:09. > :37:17.battling himself to pull off the upset of the week. It is a two horse

:37:18. > :37:20.race. You never know your luck. I fancy a little bet on myself

:37:21. > :37:28.tomorrow. Not too much. I will not break the bank. You cannot refuse

:37:29. > :37:34.those odds. I like all sports. Football, rugby, the lot. I like to

:37:35. > :37:39.have a gamble to keep my interest in the match. I quite like horse

:37:40. > :37:49.racing. Obviously, I'd do the dogs every now and again. It is just a

:37:50. > :37:52.small interest I have. I like to bet on accumulated in football matches

:37:53. > :38:02.mainly. Just having a little bit of a flutter. -- on accumulators. Last

:38:03. > :38:06.night, Danny relaxed with a trip to the great Yarmouth dog track. A

:38:07. > :38:18.chance to escape the Potters pressure cooker. I play how Paul

:38:19. > :38:24.plays. I will have to start to play a different game. It is about

:38:25. > :38:30.hitting it hard. I just hope I play well and it is a good game. I hope

:38:31. > :38:37.to be the winner. Paul is the favourite, quite rightly so. I am in

:38:38. > :38:43.the game tomorrow. As for the game itself, I do not mind if Paul wins

:38:44. > :38:47.the first set 25-0. I win the second one by one and I will win on the

:38:48. > :38:54.tie-break and settle for that all day long.

:38:55. > :39:05.Thank you very much. He knows if Foster gets out of the traps early

:39:06. > :39:08.in this match, he could be in for a difficult afternoon on the blue

:39:09. > :39:12.carpet. Lady luck can be a cruel mistress in bowls, as in life. Danny

:39:13. > :39:18.Denison will be looking to play his aces in the right place. It might be

:39:19. > :39:23.a long shot that Danny is hoping that Fortune favours the brave. It

:39:24. > :39:30.would be a very tough game for me and hopefully a tough game for Paul.

:39:31. > :39:35.He is a wonderful favourite. I hope I can turn it over tomorrow. I think

:39:36. > :39:43.we will go for a tie-break and it will be 2-1 to me, hopefully.

:39:44. > :39:53.Danny Denison is clearly a man after my own heart. We wish him the best

:39:54. > :39:58.of luck. We must reflect on outstanding performance from

:39:59. > :40:03.Katherine Rednall. She is 18 years old and has no nerves. Absolutely no

:40:04. > :40:08.nerves. She has one major championships in the past. Her

:40:09. > :40:15.father was a great player. Rebecca Field ran into a stone wall, she

:40:16. > :40:21.really did. I thought Katherine 's nerve held really well. Her drawing

:40:22. > :40:25.was out of this world. When you get an 18-year-old who is so talented

:40:26. > :40:31.and seems so at ease under the spotlight, what does the future

:40:32. > :40:36.hold? She is a very grounded girl. She had better make sure her

:40:37. > :40:40.passport is up to date. I think we will see her travelling the world. A

:40:41. > :40:44.bit to do yet. Education is very important. I know that. I think we

:40:45. > :40:50.will find you will be representing England for a long time. What about

:40:51. > :40:58.this match, Paul Foster against Danny Denison? Paul Foster is the

:40:59. > :41:02.man to beat. Certainly Paul has been the favourite for most events.

:41:03. > :41:08.Definitely in the top three. Danny is a very good player. He was on the

:41:09. > :41:12.edge of selection for the Manchester, not game so he has been

:41:13. > :41:21.around for a time. He plays a swashbuckling game. -- the

:41:22. > :41:33.Manchester Commonwealth Games. Danny told Paul that it Paul does

:41:34. > :41:38.not play his top game, he will take him out. That is how confident he

:41:39. > :41:44.is. Having said that, years a confident player. He can cause

:41:45. > :41:54.problems. -- he is a confident player. Lots of injury to come.

:41:55. > :42:00.Danny Denison against Paul Foster. Now for a player from Devon who has

:42:01. > :42:04.made 35 international appearances for his country, along with seven

:42:05. > :42:22.national titles. Your appreciation please for Danny Denison.

:42:23. > :42:42.What a season our next player had last year. Finalist of the world

:42:43. > :42:47.indoor Championships. Recently recognised in this year's New year's

:42:48. > :42:51.Honours list for his services to bowls. Ladies and gentlemen, it is

:42:52. > :43:00.the world number one, Paul Foster MBE.

:43:01. > :43:21.So, it is four-time champion Paul Foster up against Danny Denison.

:43:22. > :43:28.Let's join the boys in the commentary box. Now for a man who

:43:29. > :43:35.likes a bit of a flutter, John Price. This will be an interesting

:43:36. > :43:40.one. No doubt about that. It is fair to say he does like a flutter. He is

:43:41. > :43:47.quite unique in many ways. He is a good mate of mine. I really enjoy

:43:48. > :43:51.his company. He is a dangerous bowler. Probably more so in the

:43:52. > :43:58.outdoor game. He has never really broken through indoors. He is a

:43:59. > :44:05.confident they are. -- a confident player. He has qualified a number of

:44:06. > :44:10.times but never really broken through to the latter stages. That

:44:11. > :44:15.is a lot to do with the fact the qualifying process is very tough.

:44:16. > :44:20.Danny Denison is a top player and has been for many years. You can see

:44:21. > :44:35.that he does not lack confidence. It could be an interesting afternoon.

:44:36. > :44:44.There are a lot of people writing books about their lives. If Danny

:44:45. > :44:49.Denison was ever to write a book about his life, I would be one of

:44:50. > :44:55.the first in the queue to read it. It would be a bestseller,

:44:56. > :44:59.definitely. I would have to be working on it with him because he

:45:00. > :45:06.has had a fascinating life/Danny Denison.

:45:07. > :45:22.The gap for the green bowl is 2.5 inches.

:45:23. > :45:30.Paul will be taking no chances against Danny. He will be looking

:45:31. > :45:35.for his a game in this match. Danny, in fairness, has been around

:45:36. > :45:40.for a long time. He has a lot of respect for Paul. Despite the banter

:45:41. > :45:47.and swagger, he knows he is playing the best in the world. He needs to

:45:48. > :45:48.be at the top of his game. Paul Foster does not play many loose

:45:49. > :46:05.matches. That is the sort of shot that Danny

:46:06. > :46:11.Denison will look for. He is a very attacking player. That was risky at

:46:12. > :46:16.the first end. Probably better just to draw this. A little trot up the

:46:17. > :46:29.green with his hand in his pocket. As you say, it is getting passed all

:46:30. > :46:35.the banter and swagger with Danny. Reality is he is a very good player.

:46:36. > :46:40.He knows what he is doing out there. Look at this! That is a beauty. If

:46:41. > :46:45.it drops back, it will touch the jack. It did not quite. That was a

:46:46. > :46:56.bit unlucky. The players are just waiting for the

:46:57. > :47:35.bowls to be separated. Paul Foster has another Paul to play

:47:36. > :47:39.but he decided he was confident he was lining the shot. He did not want

:47:40. > :47:50.to go near it. He is happy enough to declare the head.

:47:51. > :48:14.One shot, Paul Foster! Paul Foster is up and running.

:48:15. > :48:21.If you remember, John, a number of years ago, Danny Denison was on the

:48:22. > :48:26.elite panel for the Commonwealth Games at Manchester. He was being

:48:27. > :48:27.looked at very seriously for the singles position. He was in very

:48:28. > :48:40.high esteem. He just missed out. He dropped off the scene ended with

:48:41. > :48:57.it as far as international play was concerned.

:48:58. > :49:05.The greens in Manchester were always going to be rough and heavy. That is

:49:06. > :49:21.where Danny excels. Lots of people thought he would make the team.

:49:22. > :49:26.Management decided he was not a team player. He is an individual, no

:49:27. > :50:09.doubt about that. Players, especially singles players,

:50:10. > :50:11.are a little bit different. They can be categorised as being too

:50:12. > :50:24.individual for team play. This is what happens. Selection in

:50:25. > :50:30.England and Scotland is very strong for positions. It is difficult for

:50:31. > :50:33.any selector. There will always be doubts over who is right and who is

:50:34. > :50:42.wrong. It is not easy being a selector.

:50:43. > :50:54.Danny is looking for the inside line. He almost put his butt across

:50:55. > :50:58.himself. -- his foot across himself. That was a strange looking

:50:59. > :51:26.delivery, it was not normal. Paul is looking to arrive on his own

:51:27. > :51:35.bowl and turned the jack. Turning the jack would not do any harm.

:51:36. > :51:47.That does not seem to be a lot on. I do not see much point in playing

:51:48. > :51:56.weight. He could take his own bowl out.

:51:57. > :52:05.He is playing this running for very different. He is looking for a good

:52:06. > :52:11.result on his own bowl. Very nearly, very nearly. Those are the shots

:52:12. > :52:21.that will catch him out. The sort of shots that Paul Foster will want to

:52:22. > :52:27.force Danny into. That is part of his game. He loves the run in

:52:28. > :52:32.bowls. Conversion shots. Not always an easy shot. He said it is a shot

:52:33. > :52:36.that is good at tools. He just missed it on the inside. -- good

:52:37. > :53:32.outdoors. I do not think there will be a knot

:53:33. > :53:40.of chat between the players. Danny would talk all day but Paul will be

:53:41. > :53:43.in concentration mode. Danny is a bit of a show man and he likes to

:53:44. > :54:47.feed off the crowd. Danny is so unpredictable. He is a

:54:48. > :54:52.good draw shot player. That was a really good second shot. Nine

:54:53. > :55:09.inches. Paul does not seem too pleased with

:55:10. > :55:39.that delivery. That is the way he plays. He goes

:55:40. > :55:44.looking for things. To be fair, it was not a bad shot to choose because

:55:45. > :55:51.his own bowl was tucked in behind the jack. It was just unlucky. You

:55:52. > :56:01.would not stop downplaying that game that comes naturally to him. --

:56:02. > :56:05.Darren playing that game. He is quite intelligent, Paul. He has

:56:06. > :56:12.decided the target is big enough to cover the deep red. That was cagey

:56:13. > :56:21.stuff by Paul Foster. It is going to be that sort of game. A lot of

:56:22. > :56:26.respect. He could have easily popped another one in.

:56:27. > :56:44.He is more than prepared to lose a second shot three feet away from the

:56:45. > :56:47.jack. It does not work on the portable rink. It is not a shot he

:56:48. > :57:14.would want to play too often. Paul Foster is sitting at the top of

:57:15. > :57:19.the tree in terms of wild bowls rankings. -- world bowls rankings.

:57:20. > :57:36.He is number one. Nick has had a good season so far.

:57:37. > :57:44.In both players minds, this guy is the number one at the moment.

:57:45. > :57:53.Paul 's record is phenomenal over the last few years.

:57:54. > :57:59.He is very consistent. Well respected by all the players. I

:58:00. > :58:01.think Danny will need to improve on that if he wants to give him a game

:58:02. > :58:35.today. Danny Denison beat Simon Skelton in

:58:36. > :58:40.the first round of this event. Paul Foster had a pretty tight game. Is

:58:41. > :58:59.that one of your Welsh compatriots? Dan gave him a very good game this

:59:00. > :59:29.time around. He needs to hurry. He needs to

:59:30. > :59:33.grant. That is really good. That is where his strength really is, on the

:59:34. > :59:46.draw shot. That is where he has two beat Paul Foster. He is looking for

:59:47. > :59:54.the two bowls. The green bowl has travelled through. It is not too far

:59:55. > :00:01.away from it. It is being marked as a touch and the jack will come

:00:02. > :00:06.across from the white spot. It is a big turn around. New line and new

:00:07. > :00:23.weight. Towards the boards. It's just on the edge of being wide

:00:24. > :00:39.enough. That will bend across quickly.

:00:40. > :00:46.It was underlined. That was the problem. He did not push it out wide

:00:47. > :01:26.enough. Losing a single.

:01:27. > :01:34.Paul will be pleased with this start. He wants to take the sting

:01:35. > :01:43.out of the game. He doesn't want Dani to get a flier.

:01:44. > :01:46.Danny is sometimes like an excitable dog! Full of energy. He wants to get

:01:47. > :02:32.going. Dan is going early looking for the

:02:33. > :02:41.green. He's in the area. It's a good hit. A really good bowl.

:02:42. > :03:00.Played with a controlled weight. He didn't go flashing at it.

:03:01. > :03:19.There is no let-up. The jack goes out. He is all over it.

:03:20. > :03:38.Very close if he gets the bend. Well played, Dani! -- Danny.

:03:39. > :03:41.I love to see stuff like that from Danny. He is showing he is a

:03:42. > :03:48.dangerous competitor. Paul is trying with this.

:03:49. > :04:03.He's just short of weight. The way he walks down with the hand

:04:04. > :04:14.in the pocket. Chatting to the crowd!

:04:15. > :04:36.That weight wasn't bad. It just got caught. He's on the card.

:04:37. > :05:07.5-1. So a short jack length. Usually it

:05:08. > :06:11.is Paul's forte. Good again.

:06:12. > :06:15.He is not letting Paul away with anything, is he? He is getting into

:06:16. > :06:19.the bowls. Into the jack. He has picked up his game in the

:06:20. > :06:55.last two ends. Trying again. A little tickle would

:06:56. > :06:58.be good. You get somebody playing this well on the draw shot, you know

:06:59. > :07:27.he's dangerous. A chance for this. Oh, yes. A

:07:28. > :07:35.maximum result. He picked his own bowl out. It was a good bowl.

:07:36. > :07:38.Danny's problem, wherever he puts this one, the bowl is going to have

:07:39. > :07:47.a shot at it. Two green at the moment.

:07:48. > :07:53.Of course you could be vulnerable here. The problem is trying to hold

:07:54. > :07:59.the bowl up long enough on the back hand to get to the jack. That is the

:08:00. > :08:03.problem. He can't afford to be too heavy, either. He has played it very

:08:04. > :08:25.well, but Paul Foster will be after that.

:08:26. > :08:38.He's got it! That's the right way to play it. Two seconds.

:08:39. > :08:44.It's not all about the draw shot. When you think about it, Danny

:08:45. > :09:01.didn't do too much wrong there. Danny did nothing wrong. He played a

:09:02. > :09:06.really good end. Good quality stuff. The last couple

:09:07. > :09:11.of ends, Danny has shown he deserves his place here in the second round.

:09:12. > :09:25.And Paul Foster in a bit of bother there.

:09:26. > :10:15.He has to see if Paul misses one of the strikes.

:10:16. > :10:21.Danny may be tempted with this. I think he definitely will be. You

:10:22. > :10:28.can't go wrong, really. I love it when you say that. The red

:10:29. > :10:30.bowl popping out between the gaps. Very controlled. Well he is

:10:31. > :11:13.certainly into the area. Just under. It's a good bowl for Paul but it

:11:14. > :11:20.hasn't changed anything for Dan. He is going again. Here he goes. He

:11:21. > :11:26.wants to solid. Oh, he travelled through. It didn't

:11:27. > :11:36.lock in. I thought he might have locked into his own and trundled

:11:37. > :11:38.into the jack. A bit of a bother now.

:11:39. > :11:50.You think he will be trying to draw with the next bowl. Depends on what

:11:51. > :11:54.Paul does here. He is playing a deep bowl to split

:11:55. > :12:02.the two reds. Saying to Dan, if you want to draw

:12:03. > :12:17.the shot, I'm happy for you to get the one!

:12:18. > :12:26.Dropping short. That's the worry. Paul Foster will always have bowls

:12:27. > :12:33.around the head, it is just a matter of whether or not Danny can recorp.

:12:34. > :12:37.-- can recover. A little unlucky with that.

:12:38. > :12:42.He could have gotten a better result. He was on target, John?

:12:43. > :12:45.Yeah, he hit the target. It is always a danger if you don't quite

:12:46. > :13:28.get the contact right. Another good opener by Paul.

:13:29. > :13:35.This consistency will wear Danny down, I think. That is the problem

:13:36. > :13:41.he faces. He is probably playing the most consistent-drawing player in

:13:42. > :13:45.the world in his day. Mervyn King may be cloeshgs and

:13:46. > :13:54.Stewart Anderson close behind, but this is important.

:13:55. > :13:59.He is a complete player, in my opinion.

:14:00. > :14:05.Yes, the tool kit he has go into, it has everything in it. I still think

:14:06. > :14:08.that Mervyn King is amazing but Paul Foster has all of the shots in every

:14:09. > :14:28.department. Danny has been playing well. He has

:14:29. > :14:29.good ends. Some good bowls. That's a good bowl.

:14:30. > :15:30.Just dropped away. Paul Foster will be happy to lose a

:15:31. > :15:34.single. Danny Denison needs a four. There is no way that is going to

:15:35. > :15:53.happen. If you can see a way to get a four

:15:54. > :16:01.out of this, let me know? I don't think that Dynamo, the magician,

:16:02. > :16:05.could get a four out of that. Danny will be thinking about the

:16:06. > :16:09.second set now. He needs a good start.

:16:10. > :16:34.He is trying to draw it The scores with will show it was a

:16:35. > :16:40.comprehensive first set. 9-2, to Paul Foster, but it is not just as

:16:41. > :16:44.simple as that? Danny threatened but Paul played the big bowls. He got

:16:45. > :16:49.himself out of trouble. He was probably more consistent than Danny

:16:50. > :16:54.on the draw, but Danny played good ends. In some other plays he may

:16:55. > :17:43.have picked a twor or a three, or maybe even a four up.

:17:44. > :17:49.FORCEDWHITE It is not going right on this one.

:17:50. > :18:00.Paul Foster has played the running bowl when required. The drawing has

:18:01. > :18:03.been good from both players. I was talking to Danny before the

:18:04. > :18:13.game. He was saying there is a bit of a party going on in Torquay. It

:18:14. > :18:17.is happening in his bar. He is hoping to deliver some success to

:18:18. > :18:22.them. Yes, the boys there are watching him. He did say it to me.

:18:23. > :18:27.Give them a little mention so you can have a little cheer, but don't

:18:28. > :18:54.forget to put the pints up when he gets back.

:18:55. > :19:05.If it drops on to the red ball it will be fine that is good there.

:19:06. > :19:09.He is playing a sensible game, Paul. Not leaving so many targets for

:19:10. > :19:36.Danny. Making Danny play the difficult shot.

:19:37. > :19:46.It didn't make it. There has to be a draw here, surely? He can't afford

:19:47. > :19:52.to take his own ball out o He could lose about three feet if he plays

:19:53. > :19:59.the same line as the last bowl. Danny is just chatting to Paul on

:20:00. > :20:07.the way up to delivering the bowl! He is in the area! He has a chance.

:20:08. > :20:09.Oh, it will drop away. I give him 100% for even attempting that shot.

:20:10. > :21:29.It was dangerous. Another good opener.

:21:30. > :21:38.Just applying the pressure to Danny Denison.

:21:39. > :22:07.It's a good reply. A very tidy reply indeed.

:22:08. > :22:15.Hes in the rhythm. He has the bit between his teeth, all right. He

:22:16. > :22:26.will not let go. Danny is going to have to work really hard for each

:22:27. > :22:56.shot. That little runner he plays. It is very much an outdoor shot.

:22:57. > :23:01.That's a good position again. I think it's a draw for Danny. You

:23:02. > :23:12.know what he is like. He will go again. Stronger this time.

:23:13. > :23:20.He's in trouble. Two runners. It didn't work out. Paul Foster just

:23:21. > :23:49.touches the jack around the corner. There is no target left.

:23:50. > :23:58.That is really well played. Around the corner. No target. Now he

:23:59. > :24:49.is in deep, deep trouble. No position, either.

:24:50. > :24:53.Paul Foster happy enough to take advice.

:24:54. > :25:49.Identified as two shots. It's very difficult but I think

:25:50. > :25:54.Danny has to beat Paul to the draw or at least match him. He can't

:25:55. > :25:58.afford to play too many of these runners. I think that is the only

:25:59. > :26:02.way to beat Paul Foster. Force him into the more difficult shots.

:26:03. > :26:08.Although it is not easy to beat him to the draw. He plays so many great

:26:09. > :26:14.bowls, but I really feel Danny is playing too many runners and losing

:26:15. > :26:21.too many bowls, David? Yes, I can understand the way he is playing. No

:26:22. > :26:28.doubt about that, but he needs to concentrate on the drawing. He is a

:26:29. > :26:32.very good draw-shot player, Danny Denison.

:26:33. > :26:42.He as proved that in the first set, playing some really good ends.

:26:43. > :27:14.Paul is doing enough at the moment. Drawing in occasional runners when

:27:15. > :27:16.he needs it. Now, Danny, let's get back down in time while you are

:27:17. > :27:49.still a little heavy. He can't go with this, surely? It is

:27:50. > :28:07.a draw, John, surely. This could go all wrong.

:28:08. > :28:09.Paul Foster must be very happy at the moment. He is controlling the

:28:10. > :28:28.heads. Danny, draw the shot, change the

:28:29. > :28:31.jack, get the length. He is really tempted to try to run

:28:32. > :28:59.that jack. He's a brave player. No doubt about

:29:00. > :29:04.that. But that is twice he has missed on

:29:05. > :29:14.the run-through. It wasn't far away. No, it wasn't, but you feel that

:29:15. > :30:37.should have been drawn. That is another great shot by Paul

:30:38. > :30:42.Foster. Too consistent for Danny at the moment.

:30:43. > :30:48.He is certainly not letting up, is he? Nor should he. He has to keep

:30:49. > :30:56.his concentration and keep playing his normal game.

:30:57. > :31:22.Good line in again. He is very close if he gets a touch on the jack. That

:31:23. > :31:27.is a good bowl locking the green in as well.

:31:28. > :31:31.He is going to have another go at this. The front plant might work for

:31:32. > :31:50.him. He is going to push through things.

:31:51. > :31:57.If they go wrong, he will lose in chunks, really.

:31:58. > :32:05.We can have tight games when ever you lose 7-2, or something like

:32:06. > :32:09.that, a nine-end set. The first set was a bit like that. It was only 11

:32:10. > :32:14.shots that were scored in eight ends. Look at this. Oh!

:32:15. > :32:29.Well, perfect shamrock! Danny a little quip to Paul along the lines

:32:30. > :32:33.of, "Any chance of easing up for an end or two?" He is going to go

:32:34. > :32:38.again. I think he is better. He is close.

:32:39. > :32:54.Good result. Oh yes! Definite two. That was a good strike.

:32:55. > :32:56.MARKER: One shot, Danny Denison. He made it. Danny playing with the

:32:57. > :33:09.crowd. He did well to get out of that one.

:33:10. > :33:13.That was not easy. I say that is a match-saving bowl, David. If he had

:33:14. > :33:18.missed that, it was all over in this set and in the match. He has a

:33:19. > :33:25.lifeline. If he can just feed off that now. If you look at the jack

:33:26. > :33:27.lengths there - Paul Foster likes a short jack length - so Danny has to

:33:28. > :35:04.go long. Paul is very close with this. If he

:35:05. > :35:10.touches the jack, it's a bonus. That will hurt Danny.

:35:11. > :35:21.MARKER: Two green. Danny is looking at Paul and he is

:35:22. > :35:26.trying to get it going! Paul has been very professional in this

:35:27. > :35:28.match. Danny, can you find another? He is very close, isn't he? Very

:35:29. > :35:32.close. He's got it! He is a boy-and-a-half, he really

:35:33. > :36:01.is. Just drifting past. Danny Denison

:36:02. > :36:08.has played for England more than 30 times indoor and out. So, he has

:36:09. > :36:13.proved himself. He would be good to play with, John.

:36:14. > :36:19.He was seen as a singles player many years ago.

:36:20. > :36:26.He needs to compose himself now and see if he can drop on to that green

:36:27. > :36:37.bowl for another one. The line is good. The line is VERY

:36:38. > :36:46.good. How's the weight? Very close. He needs to pass his own. That is

:36:47. > :36:51.pretty good. Well, he is offering a shoulder to Paul. I don't think he

:36:52. > :36:55.will take it on the forehand. MARKER: One red.

:36:56. > :37:15.6-1 up, he can afford to lose a single.

:37:16. > :37:22.He is close with this. He had the weight. Just half a ball tight.

:37:23. > :37:31.MARKER: One shot, Danny Denison. Danny doesn't know what to do with

:37:32. > :37:40.the jack, or the mat. He is still in the match. Four ends

:37:41. > :37:48.to turn it around. He can't stop talking.

:37:49. > :38:08.MARKER: Jack length is 23 metres. He is throwing the fishing line out

:38:09. > :38:11.to see whether Paul will bite on it! He's not. He is staying away. He is

:38:12. > :39:22.too canny for that. A good opener. He didn't make the adjustment.

:39:23. > :39:36.MARKER: One red. Danny needs a really good bowl here.

:39:37. > :39:49.That's good. That is very good. Will Paul risk one? Or will he try and

:39:50. > :39:54.drawn, John? I think he will try and draw with this bowl. No, he is going

:39:55. > :39:59.to tempt it into the runner. He needs to connect. That's a good hit.

:40:00. > :40:03.He ran with it as well. That is a bonus. He got a bonus off the back

:40:04. > :40:07.bowl which brought him back in towards the jack. That's left Danny

:40:08. > :40:19.with nothing to play. MARKER: Two green.

:40:20. > :40:28.That's taken the wind out of Danny's sails on that end. He was starting

:40:29. > :40:32.to set up a good position and it's all crashed on him with Paul's

:40:33. > :40:35.delivery there. The best Danny can do is get in a decent second shot.

:40:36. > :40:46.And hope he is not too heavy. MARKER: One green.

:40:47. > :40:55.I don't think he could afford to risk much more. He didn't want to

:40:56. > :40:59.lose a treble. That might just have extinguished any comeback that Danny

:41:00. > :41:04.was going to get, David. He has had some good ends, but Paul has managed

:41:05. > :41:10.to pull out the running ball and move jacks, move bowls off the rink.

:41:11. > :41:32.As I said, he is the all-round player, Paul. He can play all the

:41:33. > :41:48.shots. A very dangerous opponent. MARKER: Two shots to Paul Foster.

:41:49. > :42:09.Not far away now. 8-2. Paul Foster needs a double this end to secure

:42:10. > :42:14.his place in the quarterfinals. That's a good starter. Very good. It

:42:15. > :42:21.is very difficult for Danny to get anything out of Paul as far as a two

:42:22. > :42:23.or a three is concerned. He is too consistent. Paul has been the master

:42:24. > :42:34.today so far. This is good. Great bowl. He is

:42:35. > :42:41.going down fighting. He has played a lot of really good bowls, Danny. But

:42:42. > :42:44.Paul has just managed to take everything away from him with his

:42:45. > :42:55.third and fourth bowl. In many ways, the score doesn't

:42:56. > :42:56.reflect the match. Paul has been more consistent.

:42:57. > :43:25.MARKER: One red. That is another good bowl. Not bad.

:43:26. > :43:34.Good receiving position. MARKER: Just the one.

:43:35. > :43:46.Paul Foster's family might well be watching this match. Paul is playing

:43:47. > :43:54.very well, no doubt about that. Danny's daughter will be watching

:43:55. > :43:58.just out of school. Don't worry about the score, Sophie, your Dad

:43:59. > :44:00.has played very well in this match, but he is up against the best in the

:44:01. > :44:16.world and it's been tough at times. He is coming down with this one. It

:44:17. > :44:20.has a chance. Got a chance. Oh, that's a good bowl there. I could

:44:21. > :44:35.see Paul Foster hitting this now. Doesn't need to hit it. Just the one

:44:36. > :44:45.against him. Happy enough to lose a single with another end.

:44:46. > :44:52.Danny was telling me his Dad had a bad car accident on New Year's Eve.

:44:53. > :44:54.He will be looking in today. He will be willing Danny to prolong this

:44:55. > :45:05.match a little longer. Definitely a one, but he has a

:45:06. > :45:17.chance of making it a three. Not a lot of space, though.

:45:18. > :45:33.He was giving it a go, to be fair. MARKER: One shot, Danny Denison.

:45:34. > :45:42.Danny would need to score a three to give himself any sort of chance in

:45:43. > :45:45.the last end. It hasn't looked like it in this match so far, it's all

:45:46. > :45:52.been singles for him. Five singles. It will be hard.

:45:53. > :46:22.MARKER: Jack length is 28.5 metres. Another good opener. I honestly

:46:23. > :46:25.believe there have been matches, certainly in this event so far, that

:46:26. > :46:32.Danny would have been cruising through with his drawing ability.

:46:33. > :46:36.He's happened to come up against Paul Foster in the draw.

:46:37. > :46:39.He is the one man you want to avoid in the early rounds.

:46:40. > :47:05.MARKER: One red. You can't fault Danny for fighting

:47:06. > :47:09.hard. That's a really good bowl by Dan.

:47:10. > :47:13.MARKER: Two red. He hasn't had any really bad ends

:47:14. > :47:17.and you can see that on the score card because he's convicted Paul to

:47:18. > :47:20.one three. The rest of the time it's been singles and twos. He is not

:47:21. > :47:24.losing big chunks. Well, he needs to put another one

:47:25. > :47:44.in. He is wasting no time. APPLAUSE

:47:45. > :47:49.That is really good. It's a good three. A brilliant three. Brilliant

:47:50. > :47:54.bowls by Danny Denison. MARKER: Three red.

:47:55. > :48:03.Sophie, this is your Dad at his best! Go on, give him a big cheer

:48:04. > :48:06.back home. There he goes, now for a little seat. He does this all the

:48:07. > :48:13.time. MARKER: Time-out called.

:48:14. > :48:16.He will sit down and have a chat. I thought he was going to ask Mrs

:48:17. > :48:24.Potter to move there! That was not going to happen. Judy has her

:48:25. > :48:31.position there. Have a chat with Mrs P! Danny saying, "I fancy a holiday

:48:32. > :48:34.next year!" "Can you do me a good deal for the weekend?" Paul looking

:48:35. > :48:46.for a connection. He's got it. That is a great strike.

:48:47. > :48:50.This is the thing - I wonder how far it's gone through - Paul will have

:48:51. > :48:57.the last bowl, but he's opened it up. Even if he is lying two, it

:48:58. > :49:03.doesn't matter because Paul has the last bowl and he will certainly beat

:49:04. > :49:08.those. He's pushed him on occasions, John. Paul Foster only had to miss

:49:09. > :49:11.two or three and he would have been in bother.

:49:12. > :49:17.MARKER: One red. That is why Paul Foster is world

:49:18. > :49:20.number one. He doesn't often miss. He certainly couldn't afford to have

:49:21. > :49:31.an off day, there is no doubt about that.

:49:32. > :49:51.That's number three, I fear. I still think it is too far away.

:49:52. > :49:53.MARKER: Two red. He only needs second shot and they

:49:54. > :50:14.will be shaking hands. Well, it's only just a matter of how

:50:15. > :50:21.close he gets with this. There it goes. Right in for number one.

:50:22. > :50:26.MARKER: One shot, second set and the match to Paul Foster.

:50:27. > :50:31.To be fair to Danny Denison, Paul had to play well. There is no doubt

:50:32. > :50:35.about that. The 9-2, 9-3 score line does not reflect the match in

:50:36. > :50:39.totality. Danny Denison played some very, very good bowls, but Paul

:50:40. > :50:46.Foster was playing the conversion shots, the recovery bowls. He didn't

:50:47. > :50:49.seem to miss, John? No, a very good performance from Paul Foster. That

:50:50. > :50:57.will send out a warning to the rest of the field. Danny can be proud of

:50:58. > :51:03.his periffer mans, -- performance, but he met a really good player on a

:51:04. > :51:22.good day. Paul Foster through to the quarterfinals, two sets to nil.

:51:23. > :51:30.Danny had plenty of touchers, but the shots scored - that proves a

:51:31. > :51:33.point, doesn't it? Paul Foster was the dominant force in that match. I

:51:34. > :51:37.feel he had to play well - and he did play very well because Danny was

:51:38. > :51:41.putting him under some pressure on occasions.

:51:42. > :51:52.Paul saying you had to play well to get the better of your opponent and

:51:53. > :51:57.you did play well. Is that how you felt? I put a performance in today.

:51:58. > :52:05.First set, 9-2, I don't think that reflects the score. Danny played

:52:06. > :52:09.very well in the first set. I was very, very pleased with my

:52:10. > :52:13.performance today. Every time we come to Potters, the talk is around

:52:14. > :52:16.Potters that you are the man to beat. Is that a mantle that you

:52:17. > :52:22.allow to sit comfortably on you? It is nice to have that. There's seven

:52:23. > :52:26.or eight players still left in this tournament that can all play bowls

:52:27. > :52:30.and are capable of being World Champion. I have to concentrate on

:52:31. > :52:33.my own game and nobody else. And looking at the way you have played

:52:34. > :52:38.so far, is there a bit more up your sleeve? Or do you feel you are on

:52:39. > :52:41.top form already? Yes, as I said, I was happy with the way I played.

:52:42. > :52:48.There is always room for improvement. I can't be too sore on

:52:49. > :52:54.myself. My first bowl was deadly every end. I am pleased with the way

:52:55. > :52:59.I performed. Well done. I must ask - what did you think of the ladies'

:53:00. > :53:04.final and Katherine? She was fantastic! A credit to the game of

:53:05. > :53:09.bowls. For an 18-year-old to put in a performance like that, first World

:53:10. > :53:14.Championship Final, amazing! Well done, Paul. Congratulations. Thank

:53:15. > :53:17.you for your time. Congratulations to Paul Foster. He is through to the

:53:18. > :53:21.quarterfinals. Lots more quality matches still to come here this

:53:22. > :53:27.week. Here is how you can follow it on the BBC.

:54:04. > :54:14.bbcbowls. Here is what is coming up on the BBC

:54:15. > :54:26.tomorrow. Quarterfinals from the men's competition.

:54:27. > :54:31.So, to highlights from one of our matches which took place earlier

:54:32. > :54:34.today. It is between two of the game's most decorated players with

:54:35. > :54:48.almost a century of bowls experience between them.

:54:49. > :54:53.# When the barber takes # A little less time each week

:54:54. > :54:55.# The kids don't understand a word you speak

:54:56. > :55:03.# When you walk into a disco # And they offer you a seat

:55:04. > :55:05.# You're the oldest swinger in town! # Here you come with your chest all

:55:06. > :55:12.bare # A little gold ingot

:55:13. > :55:14.# And a lot of grey hair # You're the oldest swinger in town!

:55:15. > :55:27.# They may be the oldest swingers in

:55:28. > :55:34.town, but they certainly have some records behind them. Andy Thomson up

:55:35. > :55:39.against John Price. We are going to join this match in the first set and

:55:40. > :55:48.John leads 8-6. He should be looking to go short

:55:49. > :55:54.again after the success of the last end. He's pushed it on a little bit

:55:55. > :56:03.further. So he is mixing the lengths. He decided he doesn't want

:56:04. > :56:23.to give John Price an opportunity. MARKER: Jack length 26 metres.

:56:24. > :57:25.MARKER: First ball, the is ten inches. -- the gap is ten inches.

:57:26. > :57:30.Once again, Andy not finding the same pace with his second bowl.

:57:31. > :57:50.Gives John another chance. This is looking better if it runs.

:57:51. > :57:53.Had the line in. But just didn't have enough weight to bring it back.

:57:54. > :58:23.MARKER: 18 inches. It's been a steady fightback for

:58:24. > :58:28.Andy Thomson. He is in good shape now. Possibly time for John to take

:58:29. > :58:30.a chance. He could even force it through with strong weight. No, he

:58:31. > :58:49.is sticking to the draw. Sticking to the draw. He's played

:58:50. > :58:53.it. What a great shot. What a great shot, John Price. That will take a

:58:54. > :58:59.lot of pressure off. A little wave to the crowd.

:59:00. > :59:05.MARKER: One green. Perfect shot.

:59:06. > :59:35.John always enjoys a bit of interaction with the audience.

:59:36. > :03:30.It's coming off a good line. It's all about weight now. It looks good

:03:31. > :03:44.for number two. He is stretching the jack. Well, not too bad.

:03:45. > :03:52.A draw down. In on the jack. A perfect road again.

:03:53. > :04:07.This is good. That's the one he was looking for. Good bowling.

:04:08. > :04:14.I am wondering whether that plant set up to take the green out, but

:04:15. > :04:18.obviously he hasn't time to go and check that out. The plant is

:04:19. > :04:22.probably there, the trouble is his own bowl will stop on the green. He

:04:23. > :04:28.needs a four. He is trying to get another one in close. That's it.

:04:29. > :04:39.That's it gone now. Running away. That's it done.

:04:40. > :04:54.Have you got fourth bowl? Yes. John is asking has he got fourth shot?

:04:55. > :04:57.The answer is yes. It's just another bowl on the head to make it even

:04:58. > :05:17.more complicated. Oh, yeah. There's nothing happening

:05:18. > :05:19.now. Andy can drive it on if he wishes, there's just no chance of

:05:20. > :05:24.everything going and his own staying. No real point playing this

:05:25. > :05:26.bowl to be honest. If you stood a yard away you couldn't make anything

:05:27. > :05:33.happen. Possibly, possibly... No, not

:05:34. > :05:53.possible. John Price from Port Talbot takes

:05:54. > :06:01.the first set. It was good value for that first set, first four ends were

:06:02. > :06:03.the killer for Andy Thomson. Tried to come back very strong but just

:06:04. > :06:20.failed at the end. John hung on for a little bit

:06:21. > :06:22.towards the end of the second set, then one great bowl followed by

:06:23. > :07:22.another and that was good. Just signs of Andy starting to

:07:23. > :07:34.become a bit more consistent with the first bowl.

:07:35. > :08:12.That's number two. You almost feel it. He is starting to find the

:08:13. > :08:43.range. Is that deliberate do you think, he

:08:44. > :08:48.has gone for the spot? Or do you think he pushed it a touch wide? He

:08:49. > :08:50.is so far away from it, it's not like John Price. He wouldn't

:08:51. > :09:13.normally set something up like that. First time that Andy has grouped his

:09:14. > :09:26.bowls. He will be happy with that. John will be driving this now.

:09:27. > :09:32.Still worth reaching it on the forehand. Going to run out of time.

:09:33. > :09:41.Run out of time. Stop the bowl. He didn't get it away. I am amazed at

:09:42. > :09:50.John. He was running down. He had plenty of time but hesitated on the

:09:51. > :09:56.the mat. Oh, John! What are you doing? He nearly had a heart attack.

:09:57. > :10:01.Not only that, they've not reset the clock now. Andy is getting a bonus.

:10:02. > :10:04.Andy is getting a run on this. Andy is not having 30 seconds, he has

:10:05. > :10:08.unlimited time here. The clock should have been reset. It's a bit

:10:09. > :10:27.late now. He was quick anyway, within the 30

:10:28. > :10:32.seconds but at the same time... Well played, Andy. A chance with this.

:10:33. > :10:37.Unless it drops out. That will make the three. That's unusual for a

:10:38. > :10:39.player to run out of time, especially one with the experience

:10:40. > :10:45.of John Price. There wasn't much in it but just

:10:46. > :11:05.enough. John Price with a slight hesitation

:11:06. > :11:10.there. He definitely was on the mat. He didn't get it away. He knew

:11:11. > :11:19.himself he didn't get it away. It was on target as well.

:11:20. > :11:46.Oh! Well, if he was up here, Greg, and you down there, I can imagine

:11:47. > :12:51.what he would be saying. It was a costly one to lose.

:12:52. > :13:07.After having the breast end of the match, Tomo is probably now playing

:13:08. > :13:13.his best bowls. John is perhaps city think -- still

:13:14. > :13:20.think being being timed out. That is better but there is a red

:13:21. > :13:31.bowl in the way. It may be enough. Still one to green. Still an open

:13:32. > :13:36.opportunity. John, plenty wide enough. Looking to

:13:37. > :13:39.come round the lot. Dropping in at the back.

:13:40. > :14:12.Not quite going to get the drop, is he? It's not bad.

:14:13. > :14:25.A little bit of running. It's holding off at the moment.

:14:26. > :14:31.That was unlucky. Any touch on his own bowl was good.

:14:32. > :14:36.That was it, wasn't it? If he had the weight to turn it, it would have

:14:37. > :14:43.run through. John Price is running down to the Matt. Making sure he

:14:44. > :14:59.will not run out of time! The old dog can learn new tricks.

:15:00. > :15:18.He pushed it wide. A bit of work to do with this one.

:15:19. > :15:34.That is definitely being measured. Alan did count it was two shots to

:15:35. > :15:42.green. John and Andy having a chat. I don't

:15:43. > :15:45.think it is about the measure. The previous end and Rambo not making

:15:46. > :17:28.the clock! Marker 25. 5 metres. Very good stuff, the first two bowls

:17:29. > :17:34.689 Andy Thomson 3-1 up. I must apologise to the viewers for our

:17:35. > :17:42.temporary loss of signal. It was beyond our control, but we are back

:17:43. > :18:09.live in this match with Andy son and John Pryce.

:18:10. > :18:19.-- Andy Thomson and John Price. He needs to get lucky.

:18:20. > :18:25.I don't think John will be too sad about that. The front bowl not of

:18:26. > :18:47.great value but the back bowl will be.

:18:48. > :18:50.Just slightly overplayed. A good position. Andy has to be careful

:18:51. > :19:01.now. He might decide to lift his own

:19:02. > :19:06.bowl. He certainly held it in. He has to

:19:07. > :19:10.hold on to the line again. He doesn't want the back of the

:19:11. > :19:43.green one. That would have been very expensive.

:19:44. > :19:54.Has he got enough pace? He doesn't want to be narrow on the red. I

:19:55. > :19:56.think he just missed the line by the looks of it, with that sort of

:19:57. > :20:01.weight. It was the line I was watching. I

:20:02. > :20:04.thought he was trying to push into it.

:20:05. > :20:09.Andy, once again, he must be careful. He doesn't want the grown

:20:10. > :20:14.going on to the jack. It will be three shots down.

:20:15. > :20:24.I think it will be a turning draw. Just enough to turn his own bowl up.

:20:25. > :20:30.The line is very good on this. It looks better.

:20:31. > :20:33.He has a chance on his own bowl. He's moved it, but I don't think it

:20:34. > :20:56.is enough. The two boys chatting away on the

:20:57. > :21:06.match. They've been on the circuit for so lock now. They know each

:21:07. > :21:23.other very, very well. An entertaining game.

:21:24. > :21:27.John was saying to me a while ago, chatting on the phone, he said he

:21:28. > :21:40.was in good form. It is fair to say he is playing well.

:21:41. > :22:45.This bowl take as lot of pressure off.

:22:46. > :22:56.It's close here. A clean run. He robbed himself.

:22:57. > :23:01.The weight was pretty good that time.

:23:02. > :23:04.He is under a bit of pressure on this match.

:23:05. > :23:09.John turned the jack from the forehand. He could be in happies of

:23:10. > :23:15.trouble. -- heaps of trouble. Not bad unless

:23:16. > :23:38.he has overplayed... Just overplayed. The idea was good.

:23:39. > :23:49.I fancy this one. It's good. Perfect.

:23:50. > :23:54.APPLAUSE It's what John wanted with his bowl.

:23:55. > :23:59.I had a feeling he would do it with that one. It is strange sometimes

:24:00. > :24:02.looking ahead, thinking Andy will do this. It takes all of the pressure

:24:03. > :25:03.away. Good effort.

:25:04. > :26:11.He's missed a chance to take a single.

:26:12. > :26:24.He just lost that first bowl a little bit. A nice couple of ends.

:26:25. > :26:30.Andy still doesn't look totally comfortable on the rink this

:26:31. > :27:10.morning. He missed a chance, John. Well played.

:27:11. > :27:21.John deciding to play the open side of the rink. He is coming back now.

:27:22. > :27:45.And strongly. A good effort.

:27:46. > :28:07.And a good one. I think John will get this drive away on time. He got

:28:08. > :28:23.away but it's not on target. Oh! Off target. He took his own front one.

:28:24. > :28:56.That removed the back one. A bad result.

:28:57. > :29:06.He can't afford to lose another shot that far away. Backhand draw. Three

:29:07. > :29:13.ifrns to win the shot. He is struggling to get a third. Oh,

:29:14. > :29:16.goodness me, John, that is a bad one.

:29:17. > :29:21.A disastrous end for John. He is going to lose a really bad four

:29:22. > :29:29.here. That will be the second set sliding away. Goodness me! Lydia was

:29:30. > :31:36.horrified there. That is touching the jack. So it is

:31:37. > :31:51.to be moved. A position is required behind the jack.

:31:52. > :31:58.How is this? Very close for a second shot here. I'm not so sure that is

:31:59. > :32:05.good, Greg, to be honest. Any other end, I think that Andy would have

:32:06. > :32:16.driven this, but 8-2 up on the board, he is probably happy to be

:32:17. > :32:22.one down. Just defend his lead. Just drawing in, defending the lead.

:32:23. > :32:40.It's a good bowl. Gives him an option with the next delivery.

:32:41. > :32:42.I won't be at all surprised to see Andy change on to the backhand. A

:32:43. > :33:17.little tap on to the green bowl. Yes on the backhand. Looking to give

:33:18. > :33:32.it a little crack of an egg on to the green. This could be good. It is

:33:33. > :33:38.looking close to this. Good effort. I always found that expression odd.

:33:39. > :33:45.It has been around for a long time. You can crack an egg on that! A

:33:46. > :34:11.stiff chance but there is room for a second shot here.

:34:12. > :34:23.Fantastic! That is great from John Price. It was a difficult one.

:34:24. > :34:30.There is life in the old maestro yet. 8-4. Three ends to go. There is

:34:31. > :34:33.time for John Price. There certainly is. That big four is

:34:34. > :35:08.killing him at the moment, though. Measured the shot. Marker: Both

:35:09. > :36:24.three inches. Tempted to change to a forehand

:36:25. > :36:32.draw, I think. He got the bowl to rest. Almost all players preferring

:36:33. > :36:37.the backhand in this direction.le the head probably demands a

:36:38. > :36:44.four-hand draw this time. It's good.

:36:45. > :37:03.the red. Touched the jack. Two shots.

:37:04. > :37:16.What's he like? Just dropping a little bit. Just hit the stitching

:37:17. > :37:35.off the rink, dropped the bowl back. Needed another foot or so.

:37:36. > :37:48.Players not enjoying this forehand so much coming back.

:37:49. > :37:55.Any adjustment on the last bowl, will not be too far away. Getting

:37:56. > :38:00.nervous about the clock again. He is going to have to take a time-out.

:38:01. > :38:09.Letting the crowd know, as well. The crowd were letting him know! A

:38:10. > :38:12.little clap for John, as well. It's an important bowl in this set.

:38:13. > :38:23.Really, really needs to make this one. Saw a nice little gentle draw.

:38:24. > :38:31.Looks a bit wide. Don't think the body language is

:38:32. > :38:36.good. It's swinging now, though. It's coming back strong. My

:38:37. > :38:42.goodness! It wasn't much. It was a good effort. It was a great effort.

:38:43. > :38:43.Really did come back. Looked disappointed in the end, because

:38:44. > :38:59.that was turning back very quickly. Heard John say there to the marker,

:39:00. > :39:11.he thought he had half a chance with that one. He has to be careful.

:39:12. > :39:27.That little nudge might have made a difference. That might be enough.

:39:28. > :39:33.Only moved a millimetre. It does slide on the carpet. It's going to

:39:34. > :39:40.be a measure. Keep looking at it. John took his glasses off. And then

:39:41. > :39:47.conceded. Andy needed glasses to look at it. Will be delighted to get

:39:48. > :39:53.a one there. One more shot and that will be almost enough.

:39:54. > :40:02.In fact, can afford really to lose a single and still be comfortable. One

:40:03. > :41:21.more set and it will be over. There's no let-up from John Price.

:41:22. > :41:31.He is behind in this set but he is keeping Andy under pressure.

:41:32. > :41:44.Needs at least a two this end. Ideally a three to give him a sniff

:41:45. > :41:51.into the last end. Putting on the pressure.

:41:52. > :42:11.Struggled to get back for that one. Not a bad position to be in.

:42:12. > :42:18.Needs to be dead pace from there. He's overplayed it. I wonder will

:42:19. > :42:33.John Price be tempted to play the forehand. I think so, bowl or jack.

:42:34. > :42:42.Got to be a fore shot. Well, now's the time. John's nickname for many

:42:43. > :42:50.years, Rambo. Close is he the wrong or right side? Not bad. Might have

:42:51. > :43:03.made another one. Great bowl. Andy will be asking Alan Thornehill whose

:43:04. > :43:06.line in terms of numbers? One green. Front red one is coming into play,

:43:07. > :43:28.that's why. Forehand draw. You want to drop on the inside of

:43:29. > :43:52.the green bowl. He's got it. Just made it on the dip.

:43:53. > :43:59.Time-out called. Just looking to see here, even if he gets into that and

:44:00. > :44:04.takes a bowl away, the key bowl for Andy in many ways is actually this

:44:05. > :44:11.front one. Yeah. He could make a double, though, if he gets that

:44:12. > :44:19.connection. I think he's got a big gap, hasn't he? Set's gone. Match

:44:20. > :44:35.tie-break. This is beginning to remind me of

:44:36. > :44:40.your match last night. Yes. Two very one-sided sets, although the bowls

:44:41. > :44:47.didn't probably dictate that but the scoreline certainly did.

:44:48. > :44:56.We won't mention the result! Both players will be hoping that they get

:44:57. > :45:07.a little bit of luck. Tie-breaks can be like that.

:45:08. > :45:19.Sometimes Lady Luck shines on your shoulder.

:45:20. > :45:31.Andy Thomson plays his way back into this match. Came back strong in the

:45:32. > :45:38.second set. Tie-break. No accumulated shots, just win the end.

:45:39. > :46:35.Just dying under, I think. Yes, lacking weight. I am surprised at

:46:36. > :46:40.that. I think when you are looking for dead weight, if you are

:46:41. > :46:43.finishing a foot or so short it's very understandable, but in a

:46:44. > :46:50.tie-break you can't afford to be dropping three or four feet away.

:46:51. > :46:56.That was my failing last night. John's going to set up a target

:46:57. > :47:03.here, I think. Oh, yes. Helps Andy. That shoulder has the angle to come

:47:04. > :47:07.to the jack. He should be reaching this. Doesn't matter what weight. He

:47:08. > :47:13.can draw it with a foot or so. It makes the draw a lot better because

:47:14. > :47:18.you have that wide one to rest. Certainly a better effort. As long

:47:19. > :47:24.as he doesn't find the gap he is good here.

:47:25. > :47:28.Thought he had the edge of the jack. That was the only thing that could

:47:29. > :47:40.go wrong for him. A daft suggestion, but block the

:47:41. > :47:44.draw wouldn't be a bad shot. That's what I was thinking, only problem is

:47:45. > :47:50.he has to make it down the rink a bit. He doesn't want to be up to his

:47:51. > :47:56.own two green bowls. The problem for John Price, he doesn't want to leave

:47:57. > :48:01.it either. He has got for number one, I tell you. He has gone for a

:48:02. > :48:08.better number one. He could give it away. Gently, John! Oh, John! What

:48:09. > :48:15.were you doing? That's the one thing that is a complete no-no on a

:48:16. > :48:23.tie-break end. You never, ever give the shot away. That's a disaster.

:48:24. > :48:27.Well, it is for John Price. That could be incredibly costly. Talking

:48:28. > :48:35.about luck in the tie-breaks, and sometimes you need that. That's what

:48:36. > :48:39.happened with Andy Thomson there. Yeah, John knew he needed one in and

:48:40. > :48:42.didn't want to leave Andy a free draw. And very unlucky with the

:48:43. > :48:53.result. That's why he probably thought drop

:48:54. > :48:59.one a little bit short. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Andy has pushed

:49:00. > :49:05.this out very wide. He is looking at the respot position. Here it comes.

:49:06. > :49:12.He is not going to give it away out there. A valuable bowl but you are

:49:13. > :49:18.right about the blocker. Wouldn't be so much even the block for me, it's

:49:19. > :49:22.just staying away from it. John's only got a draw available either

:49:23. > :49:31.hand. He is shaking his head. He knows he shouldn't be in this

:49:32. > :49:35.position. Time-out called. John has one time-out remaining. I suppose

:49:36. > :49:41.there is an element of pressure with Andy's previous bowl. John thought

:49:42. > :49:48.he needed another close one. Just went wrong, that was all. He will do

:49:49. > :49:54.well to get close to this. Incredibly difficult.

:49:55. > :50:01.Over weight. Won't get back. First end Andy Thomson, he will be a

:50:02. > :50:24.relieved man. John Price gets the jack away on the

:50:25. > :50:33.second end of this tie-break. Having given the shot away in the previous

:50:34. > :50:40.end against Andy Thomson, so he must put that disappointment behind him.

:50:41. > :51:46.And focus totally on winning the end.

:51:47. > :52:10.It's certainly a better effort with this one.

:52:11. > :52:35.I think Andy can certainly see the finishing line now. Good stuff.

:52:36. > :52:42.John's got to find a magic bowl, keep himself in the match. He has

:52:43. > :52:48.put that down on a fairly narrow line. It's not bad. Certainly

:52:49. > :52:52.holding, he has a chance with this. He's got it. It will drop back,

:52:53. > :52:59.there it is. Back toucher. There is the magic. The crowd are saying come

:53:00. > :53:10.on. And that was magic. That's going to be very hard to beat.

:53:11. > :53:19.Drive to open it up or one inch to draw the shot? Time-out called. Andy

:53:20. > :53:25.has two time-outs remaining. Two bowls left. Hit it, open it up. I

:53:26. > :53:38.think so. Give himself a chance with the last bowl. I think so.

:53:39. > :53:46.It is just a slim chance he could flick the green bowl out. He will be

:53:47. > :53:48.aiming for his red one to bust it up, but slim chance of flicking the

:53:49. > :54:00.green one out. This will be quick. So close with that! That's why he

:54:01. > :54:02.played the forehand. You could see the edge of the green. Once he got

:54:03. > :54:18.past the front bowl it looked good. Looks like a blocker here for John

:54:19. > :54:27.Price. He is going to have to use a tie-break, he is down to 14 seconds.

:54:28. > :54:36.The crowd are telling him. Time-out called. Always good to get advice

:54:37. > :54:51.from the audience! Very popular John Price. Well, he is

:54:52. > :54:57.staying away from it this time. No way I am giving the shot away, this

:54:58. > :55:02.one. He might need that time-out in the next end. If they need another

:55:03. > :55:13.end, that is. Has to be another shot, he was so

:55:14. > :55:16.close. I think so. An inch to draw the shot isn't enough. He was so

:55:17. > :55:31.close last time. Here we go. Such a difficult shot to

:55:32. > :55:42.play. Quick again. Close again. No. Second

:55:43. > :56:14.end John Price. Well, we hoped for a fascinating

:56:15. > :56:25.match between these two. It's exactly what we managed to get. All

:56:26. > :56:34.down to a one-end shoot-out. Andy Thomson will have the jack. John

:56:35. > :56:38.Price will have the last bowl. Highly entertaining. The crowd

:56:39. > :56:46.certainly hasn't shifted on this one. They've been enjoying every

:56:47. > :56:51.single end. My prediction was good then, I said I couldn't pick it! I

:56:52. > :56:59.still can't. I don't think anyone would, getting into this end. I

:57:00. > :57:07.still can't. A bit of magic from one of these two now will seal their

:57:08. > :57:13.place in the quarter-finals. Who's going to produce? Not a bad start.

:57:14. > :57:26.Not where Andy likes it. Likes to keep the front of the head clear.

:57:27. > :58:08.Here we go. A perfect road. How is this? How is this for a winner? Here

:58:09. > :58:12.comes a bit of magic. A back toucher. Now John Price has no

:58:13. > :58:20.choice but to play a runner at it and Andy Thomson's front bowl has

:58:21. > :58:28.come in very valuable. Quarter of an inch, that's not going to help. I am

:58:29. > :58:33.surprised he is trying to draw off to this. He is maybe trying to make

:58:34. > :58:37.the target bigger. He is certainly down on a good road. He is trying to

:58:38. > :58:43.slide the jack here to his back bowl. This would be a fantastic bowl

:58:44. > :58:48.if he manages to squeeze it. Look at this. What a great effort by John

:58:49. > :58:58.Price. He has opened the jack up just a little bit.

:58:59. > :59:03.The target for Andy would be to draw to the back green bowl but he

:59:04. > :59:08.wouldn't want to just slide the jack and give the shot away. He is going

:59:09. > :59:14.for the respot. You don't want to give the shot away. John's no

:59:15. > :59:20.time-outs left, remember. I hope he remembers that! I am not sure if he

:59:21. > :59:29.has because he is moving down the rink. Stop now. He is OK. Has he

:59:30. > :59:33.even remembered he can kill the end? This is the one end where you are

:59:34. > :59:37.allowed to kill the end but you have to nominate it. He hasn't nominated.

:59:38. > :59:45.He is going for the little push again.

:59:46. > :00:02.He hasn't nominated. Very close. I am surprised he played that sort of

:00:03. > :00:12.weight without nominating the kill. Well, Andy think about this, because

:00:13. > :00:19.you are in a very good position. He has the respot covered. It's got to

:00:20. > :00:31.be something short. Got to be a blocker surely. Got to be something

:00:32. > :00:38.short. Tommo The only problem is if he does

:00:39. > :00:44.block the drive, it may force oninto playing the little push of the jack.

:00:45. > :00:47.Well, he's down on a line for the short bowl.

:00:48. > :00:53.He is trying to get something in front. There is the blocker. That's

:00:54. > :01:03.good. That's as much as you can do, Tommo.

:01:04. > :01:07.It's going to force John into playing over the weight to move the

:01:08. > :01:12.jack. I don't think he can get inside to get that on a drive.

:01:13. > :01:17.Unless he plays the forehand. Make your mind up, John.

:01:18. > :01:22.But he has not nominated again. No, he must be trying to draw it off

:01:23. > :01:31.on the forehand. Wow! This is a hard shot to play on this side.

:01:32. > :01:35.It looks under. It's gone. It will not make any difference.

:01:36. > :01:45.Well I have to say that was a wonderful game of bowls between two

:01:46. > :01:50.stalwarts of the game. Andy Thomson, against John Price but it is Andy

:01:51. > :01:55.that takes the third set, 2-1. A fascinating game that had everything

:01:56. > :02:00.in it. Good crowd interaction. Both playing very, very well.

:02:01. > :02:04.But it is Andy Thomson through to the quarter-final.

:02:05. > :02:22.And here is the quarter-final line-up for the men's singles:

:02:23. > :02:38.The latest betting: Lots of Scots in there. This is a big year for the

:02:39. > :02:42.sport of bowls. Not only is the World Championships but the small

:02:43. > :02:46.matter of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

:02:47. > :02:51.2014 is a bumper year in the sport of bowls, as well as the World

:02:52. > :02:54.Wildlife Fund, several bowlers here are looking forward to the

:02:55. > :03:01.Commonwealth Games, where the sport is going to be one of the most

:03:02. > :03:06.popular events. We met up with some of the potential #35r9 pants. The

:03:07. > :03:12.Scottish team for Glasgow will not be finalised until March but the

:03:13. > :03:16.talent to choose from, presents a pleasant problem for the Scotland

:03:17. > :03:20.head coach. As well as many specialists in the elite squad,

:03:21. > :03:26.David can call on the services of the cream of the indoor game,

:03:27. > :03:33.including the 2014 World Singles Champion, Colonel Bob Stewart and

:03:34. > :03:36.Alex Marshal, and British Association for Adoption

:03:37. > :03:39.Fostering. Darren Burnett is also in the mix. So they have some big

:03:40. > :03:43.decisions ahead. Scotland is blessed with having a

:03:44. > :03:48.huge talent pool. We have always had that. That is where the selection

:03:49. > :03:53.process is key and important. So from the beginning we have set out a

:03:54. > :03:59.selection criteria so we got the best team on form at any particular

:04:00. > :04:05.time. So a challenge but it is a good challenge to have.

:04:06. > :04:10.David Gourlay is still a high-ranking player himself. So how

:04:11. > :04:18.difficult is it for him to remove the hat for the coach and get into

:04:19. > :04:24.competitive mode? Well in many ways this is a good thing. I have an

:04:25. > :04:28.insight to the guys. I get to know how they are informed at any

:04:29. > :04:33.particular time. I know their strengths and weak ns -- weaknesses.

:04:34. > :04:37.I have gown up with many of the guys. In many way it is is an

:04:38. > :04:40.advantage rather than a disadvantage. You must separate

:04:41. > :04:46.emotions from selecting the team. I always said that I would select the

:04:47. > :04:50.best team as if my life depended on it. The guys know that, but the

:04:51. > :04:53.backing from all of the players is amazing.

:04:54. > :04:57.Being centre stage in Scotland will be a special moment for even the

:04:58. > :05:02.most seasoned campaigners. Foster and Marshal have won almost

:05:03. > :05:07.everything in the game, but this summer will have the adrenaline

:05:08. > :05:11.pumping like never before. The Commonwealth Games in Scotland

:05:12. > :05:17.will be huge. Everybody is talking about it now. There are a council of

:05:18. > :05:21.months left to see who is selected. -- a council of months left. All of

:05:22. > :05:27.the men are good enough to represent Scotland. We will see what happens.

:05:28. > :05:30.You can't get a bigger spectacle, playing the Commonwealth Games in

:05:31. > :05:35.your own country. Hopefully if I am picked to play, I will come away

:05:36. > :05:39.with a medal. Obviously the gold will be the icing on the cake.

:05:40. > :05:45.If Colonel Bob Stewart makes the final five, an appearance at Kelvin

:05:46. > :05:50.Groefr in Scottish colours will be a high-point of his career.

:05:51. > :05:56.It will be a great achievement to get into the Commonwealth Games in

:05:57. > :06:00.Glasgow. The home stadium and the expectation of not just me but

:06:01. > :06:04.everyone, it will be something to look forward to.

:06:05. > :06:12.The top quality facilities are right at the heart of Glasgow's . In the

:06:13. > :06:18.shad yoe of the art gallery building. Come July, this gallery

:06:19. > :06:23.will be packed with fervent support. A great place to showcase the sport.

:06:24. > :06:28.Where will the stands be? I think it will be here but bigger. A stand up

:06:29. > :06:32.there and it will be just seats here.

:06:33. > :06:41.The capacity? How many? 5,000. Yes. So it will be pretty amazing.

:06:42. > :06:45.This venue at Kelvin Grove is probably the best bowling venue I

:06:46. > :06:50.have been to in the world. Even coming here today on a January, it

:06:51. > :06:53.gives you goose bumps, looking at the architecture and the history of

:06:54. > :06:58.the place. We are in the heart of Glasgow. We have six bowling greens.

:06:59. > :07:02.It is amazing. The support from the Scottish public will be incredible.

:07:03. > :07:09.We are really looking forward to it. Obviously the home support will be

:07:10. > :07:13.great. They will have high expectations from the Scottish team.

:07:14. > :07:16.We have done so well in other years gone past.

:07:17. > :07:23.It will be a lot of pressure. We are in the firing line. As I say, those

:07:24. > :07:28.who get picked, there will be added pressure. Everyone knows that

:07:29. > :07:31.Scotland is a top nation at bowls. This is our Olympics. The strongest

:07:32. > :07:36.nations in the world will be competing in the swaims at bowls.

:07:37. > :07:40.That is not necessarily true for all sports but it is for bowls. In many

:07:41. > :07:44.respects we are considered a minority sport, even though it is

:07:45. > :07:48.the second biggest sporting governing body in the UK. So this is

:07:49. > :07:55.a great shop window for our sport. If these men win medals, any medals,

:07:56. > :07:59.they will be national heroes overnight.

:08:00. > :08:06.The 2014 World Championship was not a best week from a playing point of

:08:07. > :08:09.view for David Gourlay but he will be keeping a close eye on his team

:08:10. > :08:27.members. If you were not watching earlier

:08:28. > :08:32.this afternoon, you will have missed history being made here on the rink

:08:33. > :08:37.as Harry Redknapp at the age of 18 became the youngest ever ladies

:08:38. > :08:48.champion defeating the defending champion, Blake Fielder-Civil.

:08:49. > :08:54.-- Katherine Rednall -- beating Rebecca Field.

:08:55. > :08:58.This has been a wonderful exhibition by Katherine. You don't get players

:08:59. > :09:03.playing at this level and playing this well. It is all over.

:09:04. > :09:07.That looks like it is close to number two. I would not be surprised

:09:08. > :09:23.if Rebecca just shakes hands to this. But she has taken one out.

:09:24. > :09:30.That is absolutely definitely two. Well, Rebecca Field, the defending

:09:31. > :09:35.champion loses out. I have to say, Katherine Rednall, the 18-year-old

:09:36. > :09:40.from Ipswich is superb. An exhibition from her from the second

:09:41. > :09:45.to third end. The family are very, very happy. So they should be.

:09:46. > :09:52.And here we are. Standing rinkside with the champion, her dad, John,

:09:53. > :09:57.and Korkey. Firstly, Katherine, a moment for you to reflect on how

:09:58. > :10:00.good that was. Is it sinking in now? Not really. The support has been

:10:01. > :10:03.amazing. I know you have been watching photos

:10:04. > :10:08.from your class. They have been watching this afternoon? Yeah, my

:10:09. > :10:12.class have had it on. The whole of the sixth form and the Business

:10:13. > :10:20.Studies Room. They are all watching it. I know where you would lather

:10:21. > :10:24.be! John, for you, what was it like watching your 18-year-old daughter,

:10:25. > :10:30.doing something you have loved and were very good at yourself? It was a

:10:31. > :10:33.fantastic experience. The build-up was nerve-wracking. You never know

:10:34. > :10:37.with bowls. Katherine has been playing well this week, but

:10:38. > :10:41.sometimes you can't explain why the form dips. I just hoped that she

:10:42. > :10:46.could maintain the form she has shown in other games.

:10:47. > :10:50.Korkey you know, watching her, we chatted about Katherine's

:10:51. > :10:55.performance after the match, you were saying in terms of class and

:10:56. > :10:59.the way she performed it was outstanding for an 18-year-old?

:11:00. > :11:04.Absolutely. The calmness of it, Rishi. John always played well, I

:11:05. > :11:09.think that transferred down. There is a calmness. It was there, but the

:11:10. > :11:14.fact of playing the bill bowls, but the key was the draw-shot. You may

:11:15. > :11:18.play occasionally the weight shots but my goodness me, that draw shot

:11:19. > :11:24.was effective today. It was a fabulous moment. The moment

:11:25. > :11:28.you were presented with the toffee, what was that like? I could not

:11:29. > :11:35.believe I had won it. I looked up to the crowd, I realed -- raelgzed that

:11:36. > :11:42.they were cheering and I realised it was real! John, are there

:11:43. > :11:48.celebrations tonight? Well, unfortunately, Katherine has mock

:11:49. > :11:54.exams, and I have to be back in the classroom. I'm sure there will but

:11:55. > :12:00.they may be subdued. Katherine, surely there will be some

:12:01. > :12:05.celebrations? I don't know. I'm so tired, I may just go to bed. What

:12:06. > :12:09.mock exam are you doing? I think it is history. I may try to get it

:12:10. > :12:14.postponed. Well, enjoy. Have some celebration

:12:15. > :12:16.and good luck with the mock exams as well.

:12:17. > :12:18.Thank you. Here is to confirm what is coming up

:12:19. > :12:56.in the next couple of days: Also Paul Nicholls will be in action

:12:57. > :13:05.tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow morning:

:13:06. > :13:12.The star of the show today was no doubt Katherine Rednall, the

:13:13. > :13:53.18-year-old is a teenage superstar! Goodbye!
