:00:19. > :00:50.championship and it is coming up live on the BBC!
:00:51. > :00:56.Hello, welcome to Potters. One more match to go and if it has got some
:00:57. > :01:11.of the magical moments we have seen this week we are in for a treat.
:01:12. > :02:08.This is the moment the matters the most. We come to the final of the
:02:09. > :02:13.championship, and the people through today are Darren Burnett up against
:02:14. > :02:14.Mervyn King, the local lad. They have both produced some superb
:02:15. > :02:29.performances this week. A tough semifinal against Rob
:02:30. > :02:30.Anderson for Burnett, and up against Paul Foster, Mervyn King was
:02:31. > :02:38.outstanding. Mervyn King against Darren Burnett,
:02:39. > :02:43.which one of these two possesses the right accommodation to come up the
:02:44. > :02:49.winning score? -- the right combination?
:02:50. > :02:52.Darren Burnett against Mervyn King, it should be a marvellous match.
:02:53. > :03:44.What a brilliant bowl. Standing to my left is the man who
:03:45. > :03:49.has done the title before, Greg Harlow. You felt the force of Darren
:03:50. > :03:52.Burnett earlier this week. Darren Burnett and Mervyn King, there has
:03:53. > :03:56.been no luck about them getting to the final, they have both been
:03:57. > :04:02.outstanding. Absolutely. Merv has been drawn all week and so has
:04:03. > :04:06.Darren, he took me out in the second round. If he carries that form on,
:04:07. > :04:10.we are in for a treat. I mentioned a couple of performances from Mervyn
:04:11. > :04:13.King, beating Nicky Brett and yesterday, against the world number
:04:14. > :04:22.one, Paul Foster. Two performances that professionals watching have
:04:23. > :04:25.been saying they are as best as they have ever seen. Those games have
:04:26. > :04:30.released it out, millimetres to spare and Merv was getting them. Who
:04:31. > :04:35.is good to come out into up in your hours? Is Darren going to dazzle or
:04:36. > :04:43.is Merv going to swerve? I am going to go with the swerve. To be the
:04:44. > :04:49.King! Let's not keep the finalists any more, let's join the MC.
:04:50. > :04:53.Appearing in his very first world indoor singles title and hoping to
:04:54. > :04:58.go through and pick up this coveted trophy is this very popular man from
:04:59. > :05:00.Scotland. Davies and gentlemen, the world number seven, Darren Burnett!
:05:01. > :05:34.-- ladies and gentlemen. And this local hero played superbly
:05:35. > :05:38.to book himself a place in this final. Already a former world indoor
:05:39. > :05:40.singles champion and hoping to make his second, ladies and gentlemen, it
:05:41. > :06:17.is Norfolk very own Mervyn King! There is no doubt that local game
:06:18. > :06:25.keeper Mervyn King, who has wonderful in 2006, has got the crowd
:06:26. > :06:27.support. This is a massive day for Darren Burnett in his first final.
:06:28. > :06:38.Let's join our commentators. It is going to be a fantastic game.
:06:39. > :06:48.80% would be very good, if they get near the top of their game, it is
:06:49. > :06:51.going to be something special. The policeman from Arbroath against the
:06:52. > :06:56.gamekeeper from Norfolk. It is whisking to be a good story. Yes,
:06:57. > :06:59.and both players played very well this week, they will be looking to
:07:00. > :07:03.start well in this match and get an early advantage. A very good crowd
:07:04. > :07:23.here anticipating a real cracker. Once again, we move from nine ends
:07:24. > :07:28.to 11 ends to the final, three and a tie-break. After that, it is needed,
:07:29. > :07:42.of course. There is support here for Darren
:07:43. > :07:48.Burnett, a large Scottish contingent are down from Glasgow and Arbroath.
:07:49. > :07:58.And we have our usual friends from Inverness.
:07:59. > :08:04.You will hear this crowd cheering every bowl of Mervyn King, as you
:08:05. > :08:08.would expect, the local man. He is very popular, Suzanne his wife,
:08:09. > :08:30.along with Alicia and Harriet. The bowl has dropped down, it will
:08:31. > :09:00.make it even more secure. This is sometimes why it works
:09:01. > :09:06.against you getting the local support. Feel like there is a bit of
:09:07. > :09:14.pressure on with every bowl. That's right. If Merv income is out of the
:09:15. > :09:19.blocks quickly, there could be a couple of shots in each set. -- if
:09:20. > :09:22.he comes out of the blocks. This man is an experienced player, Darren
:09:23. > :09:33.Burnett, it will not faze him. He has seen it all before.
:09:34. > :09:40.This has got to creep up to the jack, it is very close. That is a
:09:41. > :10:25.very good second. Hardly an opportunity, John, for a
:10:26. > :10:30.spare shot. What an effort. That was a big cry, couple of inches in
:10:31. > :10:42.weight, it fell back. It is a single to Mervyn King.
:10:43. > :10:48.Well, they were queueing up outside for this match, at 11:45am this
:10:49. > :11:36.morning. Well, we've is saying, John, in the
:11:37. > :11:40.semifinal, I think this is the best we've seen from Darren Burnett in
:11:41. > :11:44.the last five or six years. He appears to be on top form. Last
:11:45. > :11:50.year, through to the final but hard way, he has not had it easy by any
:11:51. > :11:55.means. A difficult draw for Darren, took out Greg Harlow. A very hard
:11:56. > :12:02.match against Stewart Anderson and then the man he beat in the semi,
:12:03. > :12:14.the inform Robert Pattinson, so it was a tough route to the final.
:12:15. > :12:24.Of course, Mervyn King, he had to take out Paul Foster. He is
:12:25. > :12:38.favourite for almost every event he plays in. And early runner. Inside.
:12:39. > :12:52.That is one of my international colleagues watching up there, along
:12:53. > :12:54.with their son, William, what a lovely Christmas present if you love
:12:55. > :13:00.the game. He has brought young William here for the finals. Mervyn
:13:01. > :13:05.King has got another one in, needs to strike again.
:13:06. > :13:09.They have to go again. This will be a little bit quicker, a little bit
:13:10. > :13:24.more direct. He has given it a good look. It is
:13:25. > :13:27.in the ditch, the red bowl is going to fall in, that is not a touch so
:13:28. > :13:37.it will be taken away. There is going to be three bowls of the wink
:13:38. > :13:43.here. -- officer rink. I think it is just as well that Darren Burnett has
:13:44. > :13:49.the last bowl. Yes, a lot of distance between those three bowls
:13:50. > :13:54.and the jack. What does Mervyn do? Does he try to get one really close?
:13:55. > :13:55.I would suggest three or four away could be enough because Darren
:13:56. > :14:08.cannot afford to take a risk. He has pushed this out very wide. Oh
:14:09. > :14:16.well! Had a look at the side ditch, decided, do not fancy that much
:14:17. > :14:20.should. Needs to stop though. There is no way that Darren Burnett will
:14:21. > :14:29.take a risk trying to outgrow that bowl, that was a beauty. The crowd
:14:30. > :14:31.enjoyed that one. This will be second shot, there is no way he's
:14:32. > :14:37.going to go anywhere near the ditch. Just take out the other three shots,
:14:38. > :14:47.settle for second. It is safe second bowl, that all he
:14:48. > :15:18.can do. We always have Brian and Judy Potter
:15:19. > :15:25.but we have the whole family here today. Brian and Judy, Jean and
:15:26. > :15:28.John, and John's wife Celia. We have Amelia and Young Harry who was
:15:29. > :15:31.playing rugby this morning. He has shortly he won, he is happy to be
:15:32. > :15:41.here! -- he has assured me. Don't often see the whole Potter
:15:42. > :15:45.family here together but it is good to see they are here, good to see
:15:46. > :15:51.Brian looking so well. Some health problems recently and he has come
:15:52. > :15:53.through very well indeed. Of course, he has got an MBE for tourism in
:15:54. > :16:13.Norfolk, not surprisingly. Darren, just short here. The problem
:16:14. > :16:17.he has got, living in this kind of form, it is going to be difficult to
:16:18. > :16:23.shake off any sort of length. He is going to have to sticking in the
:16:24. > :16:33.early stages, weather the storm, get a pat form to build on. It is all
:16:34. > :17:07.about line and length, grind you down.
:17:08. > :17:14.Mervyn under the forehand, he misses the jack in the backhand, does not
:17:15. > :17:24.want to touch that. Skirts across quickly to the Red Bull.
:17:25. > :17:33.This crowd are willing every Mervyn King all in. They thought that was
:17:34. > :17:40.good as well. Little premature, perhaps, just over the run-in.
:17:41. > :17:45.It is a knowledgeable crowd, no doubt about that, just trying to
:17:46. > :17:49.read the pace of the rink at the moment. Darren Burnett down on the
:17:50. > :17:59.backhand, looking to turn the jack to the red bowl.
:18:00. > :18:14.Good line, again, just over the weight.
:18:15. > :18:19.The shot clock is in in action, it is down to 13 seconds. No problem
:18:20. > :18:32.for Mervyn King. He is a fairly swift player. Now,
:18:33. > :18:34.this one has got a bit of work to do. He needs to tap his own bowl to
:18:35. > :18:45.have a second, didn't drop. Just a draw, John, can't see him
:18:46. > :18:52.sensing anything with this. There is a running bowl on but only one
:18:53. > :18:59.against. I do not think it will play anything, just hope for the draw.
:19:00. > :19:08.Lose couple of feet of weight. The front bowl has just dropped. Still
:19:09. > :19:10.wondering. -- one green. The clock did not stop even though Alan
:19:11. > :19:18.Thornhill interrupted play, it should have done. Just to tell
:19:19. > :19:28.Darren the bowl had fallen, that is when you should stop the clock. It
:19:29. > :19:38.looks like Merv is going to look for the second one on the measure.
:19:39. > :20:18.We are reliably informed that the shot clock actually, the machinery
:20:19. > :20:25.just did not work on that occasion. Occasionally you get a little
:20:26. > :20:35.glitch. A new set of batteries, John! You could be right there.
:20:36. > :20:43.The jack lengths are given by the umpire, 26 metres, and the minimum
:20:44. > :21:04.is 23 and it could go on to 29.5. Darren has taken any positives out
:21:05. > :21:08.of this start even though Mervyn has possibly been on top. He has only
:21:09. > :21:13.picked up three singles, David, he has restricted Mervyn. He could pick
:21:14. > :21:18.up on one end with a three and four and the game would be level. Even a
:21:19. > :21:28.two would be good. This is swinging in behind the green. The Tartan Army
:21:29. > :21:38.liked that one. A little mini Tartan Army in the corner! I think mini is
:21:39. > :21:45.the word. There are about 20 of them amongst a crowd of 1500.
:21:46. > :22:18.They are going to be very fair, they are looking for a good match.
:22:19. > :22:20.Good weight again, just wrapping round the back, that is a good
:22:21. > :22:38.position for Darren. So two short bowls by Mervyn King.
:22:39. > :22:42.This one should be up to the jack and beyond it, he has got no back
:22:43. > :22:46.position. That jack is stretched by Darren Burnett, you going to be
:22:47. > :22:58.three up, the back position bowls of a valuable. -- are very valuable. It
:22:59. > :23:04.is what you were saying, a two or three could be very much making a
:23:05. > :23:05.difference. He gets a good weighted bowl on the line, it will swing back
:23:06. > :23:36.in, turn on the jack. He will be on the forehand, but he
:23:37. > :23:40.need something in there. He's not going to get a shot, he needs the
:23:41. > :23:53.whole in that position. The jack goes back, he is an heap of trouble.
:23:54. > :24:06.It is coming down strong now. But it needs to stop. I think Mervyn knew
:24:07. > :24:12.he overplayed that slightly. A good effort. Yes, he nearly got it into
:24:13. > :24:18.position to receive the jack, Darren Burnett will certainly be arriving
:24:19. > :24:42.at this to turn it round the corner. That is very surprising, John. Yes,
:24:43. > :24:47.I think he wants to be pleased to get onto the card. I could not see
:24:48. > :24:52.any danger across the front bowl was available to touch. It will go down
:24:53. > :25:37.as a missed chance, but a single on the card.
:25:38. > :25:46.That is more like it for the first one. The Scots are getting behind
:25:47. > :25:52.their men, the Scottish marauder coming down to get their title back.
:25:53. > :26:03.Come over Hadrian 's Wall, make sure you don't fall!
:26:04. > :26:11.A big chance here. We have not seen Darren play as well for a few years.
:26:12. > :26:18.Chatting to him, he feels good, feels like it is available to him
:26:19. > :26:24.this title. Playing good bowls against rotor phones. -- very tough
:26:25. > :26:30.opponents. Little bit loose for that. In this opportunity. Do not
:26:31. > :26:56.get too many chances against Mervyn King.
:26:57. > :27:03.I think you will find in this game the Darren Burnett. Him, he will
:27:04. > :27:09.play that longer length to make it more difficult for Mervyn to get a
:27:10. > :27:11.consistency. He likes the longer jack lengths but he is capable of
:27:12. > :27:16.playing all the different lengths and the different shots. It will
:27:17. > :27:25.still come down to the first to bowls, and he dominate on that. --
:27:26. > :27:37.the first two bowls. It has been a steady final so far.
:27:38. > :27:45.Just spoiling a little bit on this length, not quite as impressive as
:27:46. > :27:46.he has been on the previous rounds, and that will give Darren a lot of
:27:47. > :28:01.confidence. It is a bit warmer than what they
:28:02. > :28:08.are used to! It certainly will be, they play in all types of winter
:28:09. > :28:12.weather in some cases. It doesn't matter with those boys, they are a
:28:13. > :28:20.hardy bunch. They scraped off the ice and play bowls. Do not see too
:28:21. > :28:26.much of that going on down in Worthing!
:28:27. > :28:38.Another opportunity for Merv. Needs a big adjustment on the weight here
:28:39. > :28:43.now. Certainly got the line. It looked like it was struggling a
:28:44. > :28:47.metal bit. It just made it, not much. Just needed six or eight
:28:48. > :29:32.inches, to wander in. Darren, one of the few players who
:29:33. > :29:36.actually does not look down the rink when he is delivering. You will not
:29:37. > :29:42.see that in the manual anywhere in the world, it is quite unique.
:29:43. > :29:52.And the result is pretty good to say the least. That is the rule, it is
:29:53. > :29:55.all about doing the same thing consistently. Nobody has really got
:29:56. > :30:00.the same action or delivery. You have got to be comfortable in your
:30:01. > :30:05.own delivery and action. These two players are. That has sneaked in
:30:06. > :30:37.That is a good adjustment by Darren there.
:30:38. > :30:46.That is a good adjustment by Darren Burnett, not easy. Feeling his way
:30:47. > :30:47.into this game now. A slow start, but a dangerous opponent if you let
:30:48. > :30:54.him settle. It needed a big turn at the end,
:30:55. > :31:18.just a tad overweight. Darren wasn't impressed with that
:31:19. > :31:22.delivery. He didn't like it. As long as he does that, he needs a bit of a
:31:23. > :31:36.slap on the leg, but he was right about this one. Pushed through it.
:31:37. > :32:01.Interesting, that, David. Just trying to reach it. Yesterday and
:32:02. > :32:04.the day before, he was just dropping in on good weight, and there is a
:32:05. > :32:11.bit anxious play there, you sense he just wants to make it happen.
:32:12. > :32:18.Darren Burnett will have picked up on that, he would have expected
:32:19. > :32:25.Mervyn to draw that shot. He once the green ball first and he has got
:32:26. > :32:27.it --he wants the green bowl first. Speaking are asking a couple of
:32:28. > :32:39.questions of Mervyn King. -- singles all the way so far, he has a
:32:40. > :33:01.double against Mervyn. It is not his style to go chasing.
:33:02. > :33:08.It looks like. --light. Very surprising from Mervyn King,
:33:09. > :33:14.something is not right. Through with his third bowl, short with his
:33:15. > :33:18.fourth, loses a double. I can't imagine that his nerves from Mervyn
:33:19. > :33:36.King, he is a very calm sort of chap. -- S. Bowls on two days are
:33:37. > :34:08.never the same. You can be a king one day and struggle the next.
:34:09. > :34:15.Three ends in a row that Darren Burnett has scored.
:34:16. > :34:34.Not far off Micro a good game, Mervyn, it is just a couple of feet
:34:35. > :34:37.at the moment. He has been used to seeing those bowls zoning on the
:34:38. > :34:40.jack within a couple of inches this week. It is always difficult for
:34:41. > :34:47.someone to make a small adjustment. Darren slipping in on the tight
:34:48. > :35:33.side. Just dropped away. It looks easier for daring to swap
:35:34. > :35:35.onto the forehand side, he has got his own bowl on that side. -- for
:35:36. > :35:55.Darren. Good track. Needs to drop inside the
:35:56. > :36:02.bowl. Very nearly, but he has lifted it up, it could be another shot.
:36:03. > :36:19.Still slightly favours yours, Merv. Really?
:36:20. > :36:26.Well, that is really not the Mervyn King we have been seeing in this
:36:27. > :36:40.event. Slight frustration in his face. He knows he really should have
:36:41. > :36:49.won a map. -- on that. We favour one, green. Darren is contemplating
:36:50. > :37:00.playing this bowl. He should do, the way things are going.
:37:01. > :37:08.The jack through was worth a couple, he will be annoyed. That was a wide
:37:09. > :37:11.head, there were bowls for himself to come off and if he was narrow, he
:37:12. > :37:25.would have been getting the green ones.
:37:26. > :37:30.Trying to encourage it, but it is struggling. It is definitely one,
:37:31. > :37:38.green now with that movement. Big smile from Malisse year. --
:37:39. > :37:53.Alicia. One-shot, Mervyn King. The last four ends, it is the run
:37:54. > :38:12.for home. At this stage, it is very open, you
:38:13. > :38:18.couldn't really pick a winner in this set. Both players can probably
:38:19. > :38:24.improve their form slightly. They have not really peppered the jack.
:38:25. > :38:32.Mervyn needs to get into that rhythm that he showed against Paul Foster
:38:33. > :38:38.and Nicky Brett. Getting that first bowl in very close and building on
:38:39. > :38:40.it. That is a very good start. That is the best start in a while from
:38:41. > :38:52.Mervyn King. You feel Mervyn is going to need to
:38:53. > :38:56.do a lot of that if he wants to shake Darren. This guy will compete
:38:57. > :39:02.and keep hanging in there. Now, then, a chance to close out the
:39:03. > :39:29.second bowl. It is better, two very good bowls
:39:30. > :39:37.from Mervyn King, certainly better than the last couple of pounds, --
:39:38. > :39:43.ends, but I can't see Darren Burnett refusing this one.
:39:44. > :40:00.Very close, gets one of them. It looks good to take a single.
:40:01. > :40:09.First option was the jack, second was the two bowls and the third was
:40:10. > :40:13.take one away. It has actually done Mervyn our favour. He has made it
:40:14. > :40:19.better than Mervyn King in many ways, he is on the front foot now.
:40:20. > :40:23.Bet is a good bowl, just in line with the jack as well, doesn't leave
:40:24. > :40:35.Darren much more than a draw -- that is a good bowl.
:40:36. > :40:43.Good effort. Just needs to sneak up. It is close, you still favour
:40:44. > :41:04.two to green. Two, green it is. He can afford to be on the high
:41:05. > :41:48.side, he can drop back quickly with good weight.
:41:49. > :41:55.No option for Darren but to draw. He is dropping off it, but he has
:41:56. > :42:06.dropped the ball down, that should give him second.
:42:07. > :42:12.One-shot to Mervyn King, it is all very, very tight here. Greg has
:42:13. > :42:18.joined us in the commentary box. We haven't seen the best of Mervyn
:42:19. > :42:22.yet. He started very, very well, just having a dip for two or three
:42:23. > :42:27.ends, which Darren took full advantage of. Just signs that Merv
:42:28. > :42:32.is starting to find it now so, obviously, the next two ends a very
:42:33. > :43:07.crucial. The expectation, John, is that
:43:08. > :43:13.Mervyn King always gets within six inches of his first bowl, but it is
:43:14. > :43:18.not easy to keep that going. It is not easy to get that going game
:43:19. > :43:26.after game after game. That is a good opener. It is very tight at the
:43:27. > :43:29.moment. A couple of chances taken and a couple of bad bowls could be
:43:30. > :43:39.the difference. That is the back-up second bowl to
:43:40. > :43:46.put the pressure on. Anything behind the jack would have been good. It is
:43:47. > :43:50.very unlike Mervyn to do that. That is the problem, he is a shade
:43:51. > :43:54.inconsistent compared to the games against Nicky Brett and Paul
:43:55. > :44:20.Foster. It is giving Darren a bit of hope and confidence.
:44:21. > :44:30.Needs to drop in right behind the jack, and it has.
:44:31. > :44:35.He will have to attack this one. I think he will at this stage in the
:44:36. > :44:39.set. A good chance of getting at least
:44:40. > :44:53.one bowl away. No, a conservative draw. That
:44:54. > :44:59.surprises me, he is an attacking player, Darren Burnett and that
:45:00. > :45:02.looked like a given. It is short. Well, he has got one more to come
:45:03. > :45:11.and he is certainly going to need it. His back position is decent, he
:45:12. > :45:17.has got a red bowl. I was surprised at that, especially the way Darren
:45:18. > :45:21.has played this week, he has attacked most things when he was in
:45:22. > :45:28.trouble. He obviously felt it was the right decision.
:45:29. > :45:34.Mervyn is running for cover. I can't blame him, we are getting them to
:45:35. > :45:41.the business end of the set, the ninth end. If he scores one or two
:45:42. > :46:00.here, then he is going to have to start chasing things a little bit.
:46:01. > :46:12.The King family, enjoying this match. But they may not enjoy this
:46:13. > :46:16.particular bowl. I have to say he was fortunate, that looked like it
:46:17. > :46:20.was coming away. He gets a result, it is one away. One-shot, Mervyn
:46:21. > :46:39.King. Still very tight. Ten shots scored
:46:40. > :46:41.in nine ends. It might just be a little bit of luck here and there
:46:42. > :46:58.that might decide this set. Just discussing what shot should
:46:59. > :47:04.have been played and what happened. They are all experts in the crowd.
:47:05. > :47:12.Everyone has an opinion. There are refuted experts on the media sites
:47:13. > :47:18.as well. I bet they won't play those shops in their evening leagues --
:47:19. > :47:41.shots. They haven't got the skill of these two guys.
:47:42. > :47:55.There we go. Bang on it. You can't see the chalk on the bowl, but it is
:47:56. > :48:00.there. There are usually two spray marks put on which indicate a
:48:01. > :48:02.toucher. One for one that is in the ditch and one that stays in play and
:48:03. > :48:27.is live. He has got the line, the pace is
:48:28. > :48:33.good. That is putting the pressure on Mervyn King, it is a super bowl.
:48:34. > :48:48.Those greens don't look too good down the centre of the rink now.
:48:49. > :48:58.Well, Mervyn King, once again, relying on his drawing ability. It
:48:59. > :49:03.was a great effort. And he thought he was close with that, a little
:49:04. > :49:11.shake of the head. He really can't afford to lose any more than two
:49:12. > :49:13.shots, though. That last bowl, that is a target, I think, for Darren.
:49:14. > :49:38.Sits flat. -- off that. He likes it, chasing up after it. It
:49:39. > :49:42.is in line and it is a third. This is real trouble now for Mervyn
:49:43. > :49:54.King. There is no real target to hit. He may be taking time out here.
:49:55. > :50:11.He needs to find one of those big draw bowls now.
:50:12. > :50:22.Needs to get past the front one. Typical Mervyn King, he just missed
:50:23. > :50:25.it with the third bowl and he has dipped into that well which just
:50:26. > :50:36.seems to be full of fantastic bowls. Very, very close for shot.
:50:37. > :50:39.What a great bowl, three down. He hasn't left an awful lot for Darren
:50:40. > :50:45.Burnett. He just made that adjustment. Timeout called. The
:50:46. > :51:02.marker favours one, red. He is looking at this, a little tap
:51:03. > :51:07.on the backhand, John, would definitely secured a shot, but he
:51:08. > :51:16.can't reach the jack. There is a shot on the forehand but my goodness
:51:17. > :51:21.me, it is risky. He is asking about the fourth and fifth shot, just in
:51:22. > :51:26.case, but will he really play that? It depends how confident he is. If
:51:27. > :51:37.he is holding the one, he won't. He is playing it, he is looking for a
:51:38. > :51:42.good connection. No! He has given it away. Very unlucky, really unlucky
:51:43. > :51:50.with that bowl, it was a brave shot from Darren Burnett at this stage.
:51:51. > :51:57.The marker had indicated that it was one to red. Darren has three
:51:58. > :52:08.time-outs remaining. It was probably just a bowl out. He is still one
:52:09. > :52:13.down. Goodness me, look at that, 11th shots scored in ten ends, just
:52:14. > :52:19.one double, in the sixth end for Darren Burnett. Jacklin, 25 metres.
:52:20. > :52:37.-- jack lengths. It is going to be tough for Darren
:52:38. > :52:38.now, Mervyn will look to close this out quickly with the first two
:52:39. > :52:47.deliveries. That is a bit of a nervy one from
:52:48. > :53:14.Mervyn, short and tight. Struggling for pace. It is not bad,
:53:15. > :53:39.though. But a player of the calibre of
:53:40. > :53:47.Darren Burnett, he can pop two or three inside that green bowl.
:53:48. > :54:01.He has come around it. I am not sure about that second shot. The umpire
:54:02. > :54:03.indicates it is close for second. This head is not building up the way
:54:04. > :54:19.Mervyn King wants it I am not sure if that has helped.
:54:20. > :54:20.That is not too bad for Darren, actually. He is in a good position
:54:21. > :54:48.here. This is an interesting shot.
:54:49. > :54:57.Attacking this from the backhand. It is all about getting green bowl
:54:58. > :55:01.connection. That second bowl is two of the three he needs, he has set up
:55:02. > :55:07.a position where he may even get four. The Scottish contingent from
:55:08. > :55:13.Inverness. A definite two and close for the third. Timeout called. This
:55:14. > :55:21.is turning out to be a difficult head. I think any other bowler
:55:22. > :55:25.here, particularly great to my right, would look to hit that and
:55:26. > :55:30.clear all of the reds, but Mervyn is a different animal.
:55:31. > :55:38.He has drawn it. He is playing to the strength of the draw but it
:55:39. > :55:44.hasn't been as sharp as in previous matches. If it gets the edge of the
:55:45. > :55:50.red he is in trouble. It has, he could lose the set. I think that was
:55:51. > :55:55.the wrong shot, I have to be honest. I think he should have cleared the
:55:56. > :56:01.reds away. Even if he has heard, it is still a chance for Darren. He is
:56:02. > :56:04.looking to draw the third and if he does nudge the jack into this
:56:05. > :56:15.position, he is in for four shops, because he will bring in the back
:56:16. > :56:17.bowls. -- four shots. Timeout called, Darren has two time-outs
:56:18. > :56:33.remaining. I'm just thinking that wide is OK.
:56:34. > :56:39.He has the option of falling on the green bowl and falling back again.
:56:40. > :56:46.The ideal solution is just to get onto the jack. Draw for three and a
:56:47. > :56:52.touch is a bonus. Exactly. He has played some good bowls on this end,
:56:53. > :56:55.so he is capable of doing this. You just feel Darren Burnett will not
:56:56. > :57:03.miss this shot. It is right up his street.
:57:04. > :57:17.He has gone for the bowl! I really didn't see that as the percentage
:57:18. > :57:23.shot. I will speak to grade in a moment, but I will let him think
:57:24. > :57:28.about it first -- I will speak to Greg. He was trying to get the green
:57:29. > :57:32.bowl out, but goodness me, that was a strange shot to play. Everyone is
:57:33. > :57:39.saying, what on earth was he trying to do? But Darren Burnett is a
:57:40. > :57:44.clever player, he felt he was going to take the bowl out and stay in for
:57:45. > :57:57.three. Didn't fancy the draw. But it has cost them the set. 7-5, Mervyn
:57:58. > :58:02.King. Jack Lang, 29 metres. Greg, we give you the easy ones. I agree, the
:58:03. > :58:07.draw was the shot, any touch would have been four. I think if the jack
:58:08. > :58:13.was at the back of the rings, he was scoring three shots and tying the
:58:14. > :58:20.set, I think that is why he drove -- the rink. But I agree, the draw was
:58:21. > :58:23.the shot. He had drawn really well in that end. I know you wouldn't
:58:24. > :58:29.have played that, but a little touch of anything. He could have drawn a
:58:30. > :58:36.reasonable area for a third and tight, any touch could have made
:58:37. > :59:15.four. It is done now, he has two settle down for the third set.
:59:16. > :59:25.Quite often in the first end of a second set, the player who has won
:59:26. > :59:30.the set drops off and that has happened here with Mervyn King. He
:59:31. > :59:36.has dropped a couple of short bowls. You never really expect that with
:59:37. > :59:41.Mervyn. He is really tottering along here at maybe 60, 70%. And Darren
:59:42. > :59:46.Burnett will not let him get away with that. Darren is very much in
:59:47. > :59:51.this match. The crowd haven't yet settled after the drama in that last
:59:52. > :59:55.end, but Darren is in there and if he can lift his game further, he
:59:56. > :00:06.could bring this second setback and go to a tie-break. -- set back.
:00:07. > :00:16.It is just a settling down period therefore Mervyn King. -- now for.
:00:17. > :00:29.That's better, but the way to do it. -- that is the way to do it. He is
:00:30. > :00:30.not out of the woods yet. Darren has got to play the same bowl, any
:00:31. > :01:03.squeeze on the jack is good. Watch with the weight, it just will
:01:04. > :01:07.not come back. In some respects I am surprised Mervyn is even going up
:01:08. > :01:14.with this. It is typical Mervyn, he will try to draw another stop. Might
:01:15. > :01:18.even see him drop to the outside, come right back into the red second
:01:19. > :01:23.bowl. Would not surprise me if he did, he is very confident on this
:01:24. > :01:28.backhand for weight. This has been his hand to lead on in this
:01:29. > :01:32.tournament so far. He is sticking to the backhand. I think it will be a
:01:33. > :01:36.high line, wide line, Conservative, if it gets back, it is a bonus. He
:01:37. > :03:14.is not even trying. take your Vucinic even Mervyn does
:03:15. > :03:16.not wear the -- take the opportunities when Mervyn does not
:03:17. > :03:30.nail it with his first. It is loose again with the first two
:03:31. > :03:41.deliveries. I do not know, you hope the final will live up to the
:03:42. > :03:45.players' standard in the semifinal, but it has not really happened in
:03:46. > :03:51.this match. It has been exciting but there has not been a consistency.
:03:52. > :03:55.From Mervyn's point of view, he knows that Darren is a dangerous
:03:56. > :03:59.opponent. He cannot really afford to be two or three feet away. He just
:04:00. > :04:09.about got over the line in that set. It is still a very open game at the
:04:10. > :05:03.moment. It is going to be another job by
:05:04. > :05:11.Mervyn King, the back position is against him. There were murmurs in
:05:12. > :05:14.the crowd there, they were not too happy with that last bowl from
:05:15. > :05:17.Darren. I do not think Darren was too happy with it either! If there
:05:18. > :05:25.is one thing you do not need when you're out there, it everyone
:05:26. > :05:35.telling you. A few tuts coming from the front row. We have been there.
:05:36. > :05:39.It is even worse when you get to the Crown Green game when they are
:05:40. > :05:48.telling you to get on with it from the front row, start playing if you
:05:49. > :05:53.bowls! I do not think anything will happen more than a quiet corner, set
:05:54. > :06:00.off his own red bowl, a good weight. -- quiet draw.
:06:01. > :06:09.He is right on the edge for line here. He leads the weights to hold
:06:10. > :06:57.him to the green bowl. He will cost another one.
:06:58. > :07:04.Still feel there is a couple of gears for these guys to move up,
:07:05. > :07:11.both of them. It is who is going to make that shift first.
:07:12. > :07:49.That is the Mervyn King we have come to expect this week.
:07:50. > :07:55.That is the second bowl, again, John, where he has dropped it
:07:56. > :07:58.short. Anything behind the jack when you have got front touch is a good
:07:59. > :08:11.bowl. He will be kicking himself on that one.
:08:12. > :08:33.He has been slaughtering that jack on the background game after game.
:08:34. > :08:43.He has moved on to the forehand after dropping short.
:08:44. > :08:54.It is not through, that will force Darren.
:08:55. > :08:59.Got to be a runner, John. If he gets right under that, this bowl will
:09:00. > :09:03.disappear, as well as the other green one. I would not be surprised
:09:04. > :09:13.to see him playing this. Lining it up.
:09:14. > :09:25.Just dipped at the last. It looked good for a long time. He is normally
:09:26. > :09:26.very good at driving. That strike shot for Darren, it is usually very
:09:27. > :09:36.reliable. Mervyn is in a good position now,
:09:37. > :10:11.does not want to widen that target. That is what he did not want to do.
:10:12. > :10:16.He has widened its likely. You can see by his reaction, it is a big
:10:17. > :10:20.target but he has got no back position. All three could
:10:21. > :10:29.disappear. I do not expect Darren to miss this one. A little wry smile.
:10:30. > :10:35.Famous last words, David! He does not missed twice. I figured Mervyn
:10:36. > :10:42.just expected that, the triple, the trouble is, he should not have been
:10:43. > :10:46.given the opportunity. Two shots to Darren Burnett. It levels the score.
:10:47. > :10:52.Really, John, that should not have happened. It was a good drive by
:10:53. > :10:57.Darren, he took the opportunity well but Mervyn would have been looking
:10:58. > :11:01.to pass those bowls with the jack and passing behind by 15 inches.
:11:02. > :11:10.It's dropped aside on unfortunately. He paid the price. Not only that,
:11:11. > :11:38.but he has lost the jack. It has been quite important in this game.
:11:39. > :11:42.After two big drives, Darren did not adjust back to the draw on a new
:11:43. > :12:21.length jack. That is not bad either. So much of
:12:22. > :12:26.an adjustment from his first role. The slight touch. That is what
:12:27. > :12:45.Darren is used to doing in his first.
:12:46. > :13:02.This needs to run a bit. It is lacking pace.
:13:03. > :13:10.He likes the backhand here, Darren, he is in a good line. He is slotting
:13:11. > :13:16.these holes in all week. Here it comes again. As it passes the green,
:13:17. > :13:31.he might have just made it. Very close. Not quite, one red. It is
:13:32. > :13:40.hard to believe that Mervyn King, 2005, was ranked number 22. 23 the
:13:41. > :13:47.year of the four and -- the year before and 20 four before that. This
:13:48. > :13:53.is a rare bowl from Mervyn King, playing a runner. It is not bad. He
:13:54. > :13:58.played in the qualifiers in 2005, qualified for the World Championship
:13:59. > :14:02.and won it in 2006. He has been ever present ever since. He has been in
:14:03. > :14:31.the top eight since 2007. Certainly not easy for Darren
:14:32. > :14:36.Burnett to add another with this bowl. He has not passed the green.
:14:37. > :14:46.Now, Mervyn King has got two seconds here. If he has, they will be worth
:14:47. > :14:53.going for this bowl. It sounds to me he has two seconds. If he has got
:14:54. > :14:55.the two seconds, he will certainly play weight, plant the green onto
:14:56. > :15:11.the red, bowl away. Kept it very controlled with this.
:15:12. > :15:17.He has got the jack! It is going to go into the ditch, going to score a
:15:18. > :15:21.single. That was the second option. Probably a better option for Darren
:15:22. > :15:24.Burnett because the bowl out is worth two or three. He will not be
:15:25. > :15:33.to disappointed, as well. Harriet, Alicia, and Suzanne. Sam is
:15:34. > :15:47.hiding away. It is more difficult sitting in the
:15:48. > :15:53.crowd watching them playing, I suppose. Not a lot you can do with
:15:54. > :16:00.it in the crowd, at least Mervyn is on the green. It is tough, John,
:16:01. > :16:06.watching, there is no doubt about that. Not easy. Mervyn, now then,
:16:07. > :16:49.can he start with a good bowl? Great play by Darren, you get past
:16:50. > :16:52.the green, good effort. I like the way these two players play the game,
:16:53. > :16:58.they are very good chorus, and they take the chance. There is Lindsay,
:16:59. > :17:04.Darren Burnett's wife, and his children, doing a bit of tidying up
:17:05. > :17:10.by the look of it! The wet wipes are out!
:17:11. > :17:52.Darren had the line but he did not have the weight.
:17:53. > :18:01.Needs to be gentle on the jack, does not want to move it. Oh, yes! That
:18:02. > :18:09.was a beauty. Under pressure. -- that was a toucher. We are getting
:18:10. > :18:13.snippets of both of the players at their best, but neither bowl at just
:18:14. > :18:17.getting there. Difficult with the final, it is always tough. The
:18:18. > :18:27.bowling has moved on a pace or two in the second set.
:18:28. > :18:32.Darren is looking to see if he has got any shot on with weight here,
:18:33. > :18:37.drive and get the two green bowls away and get the green into the
:18:38. > :18:47.jack. If his problem is, if you look down the green, that red bowl. The
:18:48. > :18:53.forehand shot is very hard to get to that bowl with weight. He may not
:18:54. > :18:59.have any choice, maybe the one to do with. The backhand is something
:19:00. > :19:06.with, I am not quite sure he has got the angle to come off his own bowl.
:19:07. > :19:12.The chance of getting a good result out of that, still two against and I
:19:13. > :19:18.think his own red bowl stayed on the rink. It will be a chance to see
:19:19. > :19:25.that. In fact, he has two red bowls on the rink. If he has got the two
:19:26. > :19:27.best backs, that is where Mervyn will go, to split the two red ones
:19:28. > :19:46.in the back. Certainly wide enough, no doubt
:19:47. > :19:53.about that. He has to wait to get all the way into position. Years
:19:54. > :20:02.covering the race but and that position in one go. -- he is
:20:03. > :20:07.covering the re-spot. He is to down, the only thing is if he will go
:20:08. > :20:09.three down, but I think you will risk that he will strike. He has
:20:10. > :20:24.gone once, he will go again. It has gone off the back bowl, did
:20:25. > :20:30.not go straight through to the ditch but it did not make any difference.
:20:31. > :20:52.The re-spot has gone to Mervyn King. A fascinating end. That 14- after
:20:53. > :21:04.five. Very tight, six shots and five ends.
:21:05. > :21:11.It has been a mixed match as we expected. The first set was Mervyn
:21:12. > :21:13.King very much going on short jack lengths, Darren Burnett pushing
:21:14. > :21:46.through. 29, 20 9.5. Look at this. All the way. He has
:21:47. > :22:12.got it. A dazzler from Darren. Tight bowls in this end. Good
:22:13. > :22:51.bowling. Taking it on the backhand side. He
:22:52. > :22:55.has got to pass the green bowl. Slightly under. It stays up, it
:22:56. > :23:08.could be close to second. Not bad. It is tough out there, Darren. It is
:23:09. > :23:33.very warm out there. Can he get past the front red one?
:23:34. > :23:41.Right on the jack! Just the edge. A definite two. Now, Darren, one big
:23:42. > :23:44.hole here and you set. A fantastic position to level the scores. One
:23:45. > :24:15.big bowl here. Pushing out, the bowl is making its
:24:16. > :24:21.way back. Dropping short... Darren has got the last bowl. I wonder if
:24:22. > :24:27.that might tempt Mervyn for a little bit of weight, a good position with
:24:28. > :24:32.the two green bowls at the back. Do not want to drive it but maybe just
:24:33. > :24:44.control the red on to read. This is a hard shot to play. If you
:24:45. > :24:50.have not stretched through the weight, it will get away very
:24:51. > :24:57.thickly. He was very neat with the weight, did not need a lot. Barely
:24:58. > :25:02.passing the jack. You are a definite level now on the rink. I am not sure
:25:03. > :25:05.if Darren can really add another past the short bowl. It will be a
:25:06. > :25:29.tough one. With Darren, he did not go to damage
:25:30. > :25:36.limitation, we thought he might have done. Just had to play a little bit
:25:37. > :25:44.stronger at it. He has lost the double. It is for-4 -- it was for
:25:45. > :25:55.all after seven in the first set, it is now four all after six in the
:25:56. > :25:58.second. All up to grab. It is not easy for either player but you have
:25:59. > :26:05.to say it is in the mix will both of them. Fascinating stuff, nothing
:26:06. > :26:12.between the two players. Merv is only scoring once, Darren, a couple
:26:13. > :26:17.of twos. All up for grabs. One thing we have not seen, Greg, we have not
:26:18. > :26:22.seen a very short jack lengths or well up the rink, no one is willing
:26:23. > :26:27.to take the risk of a change of tactics. I think both the players
:26:28. > :26:31.prefer little bit of leg. I cannot see either of them, unless it went
:26:32. > :26:33.one-sided. I cannot seek either of them taking that risk to the 23
:26:34. > :27:06.metres. Thank you, Greg. We will see more loose tolls from
:27:07. > :27:15.Mervyn today then we have seen in the tournament. It is the pressure
:27:16. > :27:22.of a world final, I suppose. It is also very, very heart to reach a
:27:23. > :27:25.peak come quarterfinal and semifinal stage, there is no doubt that these
:27:26. > :27:31.two players played so well in the semifinals. Having to carry that
:27:32. > :27:36.forward to the last match. I think Greg is absolutely right, though.
:27:37. > :27:39.Both these players prefer slightly longer lengths. Not prepared to go
:27:40. > :27:59.short just yet. Darren is tempted. I think Lindsay
:28:00. > :28:03.has her hands full with the two girls! They are just keeping her
:28:04. > :28:11.unused. Daddy is doing something down there, not quite sure! Playing
:28:12. > :28:12.bowls, that's all they know. They are more worried about the bag of
:28:13. > :28:30.sweets and the crisps. He has got a chance here, Mervyn,
:28:31. > :28:33.three short red bowls. His backhand has been so favourable, to the
:28:34. > :28:53.players. Running a little bit. Did not want
:28:54. > :28:58.to be that far back, John, he was really looking for a second shot.
:28:59. > :29:05.That is why he is not too happy. Darren is going to have a look at
:29:06. > :29:11.this to see if he can get to that green bowl. He has got three
:29:12. > :29:15.seconds. It is all about pressure at this stage. Whether he can get a
:29:16. > :29:26.track under his own bowls on the forehand to clean the green away .
:29:27. > :29:30.Time-out called. The options of the forehand, he has
:29:31. > :29:36.got to short bowls, he can play into those. If you gets under those, he
:29:37. > :29:42.gets the green. Not an easy shot, it is a controlled weight shot. That as
:29:43. > :29:46.a percentage shot into the two red bowls or insight into the green one.
:29:47. > :29:53.If he plucks the green one out, does not know which way it claims it,
:29:54. > :30:04.does it? He is looking for a good result. It is wide. I can understand
:30:05. > :30:10.why he played it. Cannot blame him, to be truthful with you. That was a
:30:11. > :30:14.good call to play the drive. Mervyn has been a little bit in and out.
:30:15. > :30:19.Not have been easy to save those three shots. It is advantage Merv
:30:20. > :30:23.now because he has got a couple of feet to add a second. Now, Mervyn,
:30:24. > :30:36.normally would pop this one in, Dave. Normally, yes.
:30:37. > :30:43.Finals bring the different sort of pressure for them. But I don't think
:30:44. > :30:58.he made a mistake with that one. It has dropped in for the double.
:30:59. > :31:09.Still for ends to go -- four ends. Darren Burnett will be under
:31:10. > :31:28.pressure, there are no time-outs left for him.
:31:29. > :31:44.A bit of movement in the crowd. Some people just making their way down to
:31:45. > :32:38.their seats. Darren overweight, gone three or
:32:39. > :32:42.four metres past. The supporting the crowd for Mervyn, they can sense now
:32:43. > :33:06.that he might just make a run for home now.
:33:07. > :33:23.Here is the correction, he has got it. What a bowl by Darren Burnett,
:33:24. > :33:28.he keeps the first shot. It was a massive adjustment from his first
:33:29. > :33:30.bowl. Just when you think Mervyn is getting on top, he produces a bowl
:33:31. > :33:41.like that. Struggling to get back with that
:33:42. > :33:55.one. Darren is not going to draw another
:33:56. > :34:05.bowl, he is advised to go to the back two greens.
:34:06. > :34:18.Pretty good. It comes a little bit further, that is very good. A very
:34:19. > :34:19.deliberate bowl, but coming on the angle was better than straight on
:34:20. > :34:25.the greens. Intelligent angle was better than straight on
:34:26. > :34:33.Darren Burnett, he has been around the world scene, indoor and outdoor,
:34:34. > :34:38.for along time. Played in Australia through a lot, represented Scotland
:34:39. > :34:40.in the Commonwealth Games. Tactically, he's not going to make
:34:41. > :34:50.in the Commonwealth Games. too many mistakes, if any.
:34:51. > :34:57.Mervyn again just sliding. A really good effort, but he is going to lose
:34:58. > :34:58.Mervyn again just sliding. A really a single. I am surprised Darren is
:34:59. > :35:05.even going down. He a single. I am surprised Darren is
:35:06. > :35:09.using this as a practice delivery, just playing to a point on the
:35:10. > :35:15.rink. I can't imagine he will go anywhere near that short bowl. If
:35:16. > :35:20.he's going to play the jack along in the next end, he might just put this
:35:21. > :35:25.through to a long jack length. That is what he's doing. Just to get that
:35:26. > :35:36.pace in his arm. He doesn't want to waste the bowl giving away anything.
:35:37. > :35:44.That was a big end for Darren, he only got one but it is a massive and
:35:45. > :35:54.in terms of the set. Didn't want to lose a shot. -- a massive one.
:35:55. > :35:58.Having a think about this. You can't blame him. Every bowl, every
:35:59. > :37:27.decision now, so vital. Second bowl, a missed opportunity.
:37:28. > :37:35.In the last end, he was through the first bowl and banged, the second
:37:36. > :37:39.one was right on it. When Mervyn Mrs with the first, you have a chance to
:37:40. > :37:45.build on it. It is exactly the same with Darren. This is the first, you
:37:46. > :37:52.want to take a chance, but it is all a bit loose at the moment. If you
:37:53. > :37:54.can call it loose. It is not bad bowling but not as tight as we have
:37:55. > :38:10.come to expect. It looks better for weight. He wants
:38:11. > :38:36.the bowl solid, gets it. It will drop back for another.
:38:37. > :39:01.That is great grouping from Mervyn, but unfortunately, two feet too far.
:39:02. > :39:13.He is on a wide line, very good line. It is all down to weight.
:39:14. > :39:22.Crunches into the green bowl again. Surely Mervyn will not draw here. It
:39:23. > :39:34.is a clean draw, really, nothing in the way. And a draw, it is.
:39:35. > :39:45.Have you adjusted to weight? Will it drop? A puff of the cheeks from
:39:46. > :39:51.Mervyn King tells you that Darren has picked up a trouble. --
:39:52. > :40:02.Treble. You can't say that was a mistake, because that would be
:40:03. > :40:07.normal for Mervyn King, to try and draw the shot. A lot of other
:40:08. > :40:13.players would have played a damage limitation and taken one or two
:40:14. > :40:17.about but it is not his style. I think it was the right shot to play
:40:18. > :40:24.for him, nothing in a way but like the other three bowls, he was just
:40:25. > :40:29.over the weight. A long jack length, as expected, by Mervyn. He
:40:30. > :40:35.is under some pressure now. The last two ends have scored four
:40:36. > :40:54.shots against him. The saving grace for Mervyn is he
:40:55. > :41:00.only needs to tie the set, he doesn't need to win.
:41:01. > :41:25.If Darren takes a single, then I think we are going into a tie-break.
:41:26. > :41:34.I just wonder, is Darren Burnett tempted here to go for the jack. It
:41:35. > :41:42.would be very early. He is an attacking player.
:41:43. > :41:49.It was wide. Very important now for Mervyn that he gets this one in.
:41:50. > :41:55.Turn the jack or just come behind it and it creates a problem. Dropped
:41:56. > :42:02.short and Darren Burnett will go again.
:42:03. > :42:14.It doesn't look right. It really doesn't look right to me. It is just
:42:15. > :42:18.so far away. Darren Burnett might just draw this. I expected it to be
:42:19. > :42:34.somewhat closer. It is a bad bowl, that second one.
:42:35. > :42:50.It could be costly. This is better. It looks like it is going to drop
:42:51. > :43:05.away. Mervyn will be making sure with this
:43:06. > :43:19.one. Needs the jack, and he has got it.
:43:20. > :43:25.That was the key to that shot, turning the jack, and Mervyn King
:43:26. > :43:36.realised it. He realised he needed that jack to go past. Two, green. It
:43:37. > :43:40.doesn't make a lot of difference from the point of view of the shots.
:43:41. > :43:48.One or two is irrelevant to Darren, he needs to win the last end. But he
:43:49. > :43:54.wouldn't want to drop a three. That is why he is on the backhand. He has
:43:55. > :44:05.his own bowls on the way in, so it is worth arriving at it. Overweight.
:44:06. > :44:10.Mervyn King will be looking to add another here to give a little buffer
:44:11. > :44:14.going into the last end of the second set. At the moment, it would
:44:15. > :44:26.be 8-8 and a straight running shoot out effectively. Timeout. Mervyn has
:44:27. > :44:37.two time-outs remaining. This is a very important bowl by Mervyn.
:44:38. > :44:49.Certainly out on a wide line, which is usually favoured by Mervyn King.
:44:50. > :44:56.Will it stop in time? He gave that a bit of a go. He taps his chest, he
:44:57. > :45:00.thought it was too heavy. Nearly got his own bowl out. Two shops, Mervyn
:45:01. > :45:19.King. -- to shots. A one end shoot out, effectively.
:45:20. > :45:22.Darren Burnett all have the last bowl, but Mervyn King will deliver
:45:23. > :45:31.the jack to his favourite jack length.
:45:32. > :45:57.In this situation, you sometimes prefer to have the last bowl.
:45:58. > :46:04.It is a good starter. Just a little bit closer than on your picture at
:46:05. > :46:18.home, only about ten inches short. The perfect bowl would be between
:46:19. > :46:26.that green bowl and the jack. I think he has got the jack for a
:46:27. > :46:40.single. A to G one by Darren. -- great bowl.
:46:41. > :46:51.Mervyn slipping onto the forehand, easier to come in on the jack. A bit
:46:52. > :46:55.pacey. Mervyn realises it is only one shot required, so I suggest
:46:56. > :47:11.Darren will draw this in. He is waving at this one, trying to
:47:12. > :47:30.encourage it up. Not going to get there.
:47:31. > :47:38.It is on a wide line again. All about weight. It looks better for
:47:39. > :47:46.weight. It is whether it gets back in time. Just past it. Well, he has
:47:47. > :47:54.also offered himself another opportunity to win the bowl off.
:47:55. > :47:55.Darren has defined a good bowl. If you dropped onto that last green
:47:56. > :48:11.one, it would be good. I get the feeling this has tie-break
:48:12. > :48:23.written all over it. This is very good. This is really good, in
:48:24. > :48:33.behind. That is a beezer. Hard to beat. He might be tempted to play
:48:34. > :48:39.weight. He can see that red bowls, he could clean the two out. The
:48:40. > :48:46.angle is there, Mervyn is going for a time-out. Is he going to draw this
:48:47. > :48:59.on the backhand? I think he is, on to Darren's last bowls.
:49:00. > :49:10.I don't think it is going to make it back. Great effort. Drops in right
:49:11. > :49:15.behind, but it is not enough. All credit to Darren Burnett, he fought
:49:16. > :49:21.back really hard in that second set. Lifted A1 and three, which
:49:22. > :49:28.brought the match to Mervyn King -- a one.
:49:29. > :49:38.Darren won the toss and has given the jack to Mervyn on the first end.
:49:39. > :49:52.Tie-breaks are always hard to call, the rules change. We are not in the
:49:53. > :49:57.situation of accumulated shops, it is just take the shot. Darren
:49:58. > :50:04.Burnett would generally be the more attacking player. We think back to
:50:05. > :50:09.some of the great tie-break and we have had over the years and some of
:50:10. > :50:13.the players who won most of them, players like Ian Bond, who was very
:50:14. > :50:14.much an attacking player and he won an extraordinary amount of tie-break
:50:15. > :50:30.matches. Judging by that answer, you have
:50:31. > :50:35.avoided my question. You still haven't given me who you fancy. I
:50:36. > :50:47.was hoping that and so would fob the issue! It hasn't. -- that and so
:50:48. > :50:54.Darren Burnett has won the last 4 ends, three of the last four in the
:50:55. > :51:15.second set. He is very strong at the moment,
:51:16. > :51:24.Darren. Finishing well. Coming into the home straight.
:51:25. > :51:30.Mervyn is going to have to dig deep. He must have thought he was so close
:51:31. > :51:32.to winning the championship in the last set. Yes, he had chances, but
:51:33. > :51:39.he just hasn't been as consistent. The big three in the ninth and was
:51:40. > :52:08.the problem. -- ninth end. That has maybe given Mervyn a
:52:09. > :52:19.chance. Play down at this with place. -- pace.
:52:20. > :52:36.Very controlled. He has got his own bowls on the inside if it dives
:52:37. > :52:42.away. It is diving away. Two, red. Back position is now against Darren
:52:43. > :52:49.but he has got the last bowl. He has got to go deep with this, surely. Or
:52:50. > :52:58.at least of the side of the jack. -- off to the side.
:52:59. > :53:11.He has pushed it out wide, very sensible. He has got it solid. Well,
:53:12. > :53:15.it is not ideal. No, but I would rather be in Darren's position than
:53:16. > :53:23.Mervyn's at the moment. He will do very well to get out of this.
:53:24. > :53:31.This will be a miracle shot if he plays it.
:53:32. > :53:44.Going for the dead draw. Not a lot of choice in the circumstances.
:53:45. > :54:10.Big shots when big matches and that was a big shot -- win big matches.
:54:11. > :54:18.What a bowl, under that sort of pressure, and Mervyn is staying
:54:19. > :54:19.calm, as he needs to. But I bet his heart is beating fast. My goodness
:54:20. > :54:39.me, that was a good bowl. Darren will play into this. Got it.
:54:40. > :54:46.There is a green bowl lurking the back there. Has it run enough for
:54:47. > :54:54.Mervyn King? This is going to be close. Darren says he has got the
:54:55. > :55:01.shot. We knew there was a green one there but the jack just rolled on.
:55:02. > :55:10.Two A to G three by both players. Had to trust that he would get a
:55:11. > :55:21.good connection -- two great bowls. Live sport drama, we love it. That
:55:22. > :55:31.looks like it is in. Yes. He has held onto it. What an escape that
:55:32. > :55:34.was. First game, Darren Burnett. The Tartan Army in the crowds cheering,
:55:35. > :55:43.Darren Burnett getting the first end. If Mervyn King had have held
:55:44. > :55:57.onto that shot, it would have been an unbelievable result. What a great
:55:58. > :56:01.bowl. Two great bowls from these players. Mervyn with a wonderful
:56:02. > :56:06.dead draw. Darren had the courage to come back and play that running
:56:07. > :56:09.shot. He had percentages, it was a much wider target, but you have to
:56:10. > :56:13.hit the target under that pressure and that is what he is good at. We
:56:14. > :56:14.have been talking about that attacking shot that Darren Burnett
:56:15. > :56:55.has. Creeping up to the jack. That is a
:56:56. > :57:11.great bowl. It is edge of your seat stuff, this.
:57:12. > :57:17.I'm not going to predict. You just don't know where this is going.
:57:18. > :57:18.Nobody at home will be leaving their seats to put the kettle on. It is
:57:19. > :57:25.too close to call. There is no harm having deep
:57:26. > :57:35.position. Four inches, I don't think Mervyn
:57:36. > :57:54.will be comfortable that it is close enough to win this one.
:57:55. > :58:01.Dropped under, you would expect Darren Burnett to reach this with a
:58:02. > :58:06.little bit of weight if he wants to, as a percentage shot, bowl out or
:58:07. > :58:11.jack through to the back once. Not a great bowl from Mervyn Thomas but if
:58:12. > :58:15.Darren gets onto the jack, Mervyn is in trouble. -- from Mervyn, but it
:58:16. > :58:30.Darren gets onto the Here it comes. Missed it by a
:58:31. > :58:45.fraction. I think forehand would be good here
:58:46. > :58:47.for Mervyn. I think he will go to those red bowls. I don't think he
:58:48. > :59:02.can afford to draw to it right now. Just has to push through this a
:59:03. > :59:15.little bit, make sure he is reaching.
:59:16. > :59:22.Dropped short. He has got a second bite because he has covered the
:59:23. > :59:31.drive shaft, so he will leave Darren the Open draw. What a chance this
:59:32. > :59:34.is. He has covered the takeout shot, but not betrayal of the jack, and
:59:35. > :59:54.that is what Darren will be looking for.
:59:55. > :00:16.That is the chance. Darren's wife and two girls, getting into it now.
:00:17. > :00:24.We love it when it gets to the last end, don't we, John, of a major
:00:25. > :00:27.championship. This is the number-1 championship in the world you just
:00:28. > :00:30.do not get any better than this, no matter where you play bowls. It is
:00:31. > :00:46.going to the wire. Merv has got the first bowl to it,
:00:47. > :00:51.Darren has got the last bowl. This is where you want to play a front
:00:52. > :00:53.toucher, right on the nose. It is where you would like to have the
:00:54. > :01:01.last bowl as well, John. Mervyn did not look too happy with
:01:02. > :01:12.that one. Dropped it a bit. Darren is playing his favourite
:01:13. > :01:35.backhand side. There it is. A front toucher. That
:01:36. > :01:39.is a great call. It is going to be very hard to beat. He would be
:01:40. > :02:02.tented by a draw in this needs to hurry. Not quite! What
:02:03. > :02:16.a great effort. Still one red. She cannot believe it!
:02:17. > :02:21.They are getting a bit hot and bothered out there! This is great
:02:22. > :02:35.stuff, it really is. It is sensibly not too far, going
:02:36. > :02:40.deep, Aaron Bennett aware that he has the last delivery. This is a
:02:41. > :02:49.problem for Mervyn. Does he play for the split or just try and turn his
:02:50. > :02:55.own bowl over? I would play for the split. In case he gets a bowl on the
:02:56. > :02:58.jack. He has another one to recover. I would definitely play it but I do
:02:59. > :03:11.not have to, thankfully! I think he has to give it a chance.
:03:12. > :03:19.Asked to open it up in some way. -- he has two. Goodness me! It is
:03:20. > :03:27.getting very tense here. There are 1500 people in here and not sound.
:03:28. > :03:34.He is playing a wide backhand drop! I cannot believe he is playing
:03:35. > :03:44.this! It is such a hard shot to play. He has got another bowl ahead
:03:45. > :03:49.which is pretty good. He is leaving it to the last bowl. That is a good
:03:50. > :03:53.bowl that he has played there, a good position. If he gets the split
:03:54. > :03:58.with the next one. That will be opportunity still be there? If I was
:03:59. > :04:03.Darren, I would be tempted to try and leave one in the way. Then you
:04:04. > :04:05.are asking him to draw within three inches. A blocker could be the
:04:06. > :04:24.solution. I don't think he should be out
:04:25. > :04:31.there. He has left that as a target. There is a chance.
:04:32. > :04:38.I think the split is good here, the inside or even the outside of the
:04:39. > :04:52.last bowl. This is a chance for Mervyn.
:04:53. > :05:09.I think he has helped it. That has gone. And Darren Burnett keeps the
:05:10. > :05:13.third and of the set, winds its 2-1 and takes the world singles
:05:14. > :05:17.championship. What a wonderful match. The policeman from Arbroath,
:05:18. > :05:21.up against very much the local favourite, Mervyn King, and he had
:05:22. > :05:27.taken it two sets to one. What a wonderful performance, no doubt
:05:28. > :05:32.about that. Mervyn King took the first set 7-5, Darren took the
:05:33. > :05:37.second 10-8, and over the line in the tie-break, 2-1. A great match,
:05:38. > :05:41.Darren came strong at the end. A worthy champion. I think on the day
:05:42. > :05:59.he was the better man. The first set was always going to be
:06:00. > :06:09.a tight one, 4-4 after seven, 7-4 after ten. Darren Burnett took a
:06:10. > :06:12.risk, this went away from him. Peter can risk again for the last bowl,
:06:13. > :06:23.went against him. Took a single but lost it 7-5. Mervyn King, so good at
:06:24. > :06:32.pulling the jack back. That was the double he needed to go 8-8 in the
:06:33. > :06:35.second set. This was a great bowl for Darren Burnett. Making sure he
:06:36. > :06:42.was not left with one bowl on the head, dropped it down to the double.
:06:43. > :06:45.He won it 10-8. And that was the hit with the last bowl in the first end
:06:46. > :06:53.of the tie-break, he won that on a measure. Advantage toucher. --
:06:54. > :06:59.advantage Burnett. Just failed with the last bowl on the second end,
:07:00. > :07:06.looking for the jack back to win, last bowl of the championship for
:07:07. > :07:09.Mervyn King. Peopled it inside and it has gone. Darren Burnett, hands
:07:10. > :07:18.in the act, the world professional champion for the first time. Well
:07:19. > :07:26.done, Darren. Not going to be much in the statistics!
:07:27. > :07:33.That was a great game. Darren Burnett, really out of the blue in
:07:34. > :07:36.the last six years he struggled a little bit, he has come back strong
:07:37. > :07:43.in the final, thoroughly deserved to win it.
:07:44. > :07:48.Congratulations to both men on producing a superb final. First we
:07:49. > :07:51.will talk to Mervyn. You have played some outstanding bowls this week,
:07:52. > :07:58.and produced some good stuff today. How proud are you obvious
:07:59. > :08:01.performance? If they said I was game to get the final when I started I
:08:02. > :08:04.would have taken that any day. I played well, not so good today but
:08:05. > :08:08.he had played some big bowls under pressure. I would like to thank the
:08:09. > :08:16.crowd, they were fantastic. Absolutely brilliant. Just before we
:08:17. > :08:20.talk to Darren, you said about playing big bowls today, you
:08:21. > :08:23.produced some special moments. In a normal match, perhaps you might have
:08:24. > :08:29.come out on top. Once again, all week long, you have something of the
:08:30. > :08:35.magical touch back again. I have, it would have been nice to have one.
:08:36. > :08:39.Darren has got it. It is half an inch or something, it could have
:08:40. > :08:45.been a different story. He played well and delivered a win. You can be
:08:46. > :08:51.proud of your performance. Darren, here we go. 2014 world champion, how
:08:52. > :08:57.good does that sound? It sounds absolutely unbelievable.
:08:58. > :09:01.Came down to the first, for the first time ever for the watcher and
:09:02. > :09:04.chips, not in great form, not really looking for anything rather than
:09:05. > :09:09.getting to the first game. Maybe I have been more relaxed. Today we
:09:10. > :09:13.played both under what we have been playing. Merv was the more
:09:14. > :09:20.consistent. The big bowls came at the right time. I am delighted. De
:09:21. > :09:23.secret is -- the secret is to come in in poor form! You have played
:09:24. > :09:26.some great games and produced some tremendous bowls. The nerves today
:09:27. > :09:34.for man in the final for the first time, how were they? It was the
:09:35. > :09:38.first game of the tournament where I can say there were plenty of nerves.
:09:39. > :09:41.I have never been in a final and this man has been too tired to the
:09:42. > :09:50.event. I have been OK but I have been watching him, he has been on
:09:51. > :09:54.the jack every time. When you won, you looked up at your wife and kids,
:09:55. > :10:00.they have been here all week, giving you great support. How was it to
:10:01. > :10:03.look up and see their support? Absolutely brilliant, it is a long
:10:04. > :10:07.tournament and to have them come down for the last week of the event
:10:08. > :10:11.has been brilliant. The fact that they are here today to share the
:10:12. > :10:16.moment is brilliant. The Tartan Army are here as well! Absolutely, the
:10:17. > :10:22.crowd were great, that is what makes the aim. The crowd were fantastic.
:10:23. > :10:28.Congratulations, you are the 2014 world indoor bar is.
:10:29. > :10:39.Congratulations. -- world indoor Bowls in. -- champion.
:10:40. > :10:46.Our MC is standing by to make the presentations after what was a
:10:47. > :10:49.superb final. Thank you very much. It is wages
:10:50. > :10:54.time. Here to make the presentations, your appreciation for
:10:55. > :11:01.the Web marketing and distribution director for Just Retirement, along
:11:02. > :11:12.with the chairman and proprietor of Potters resorts, Brian Potter, MBA.
:11:13. > :11:16.-- MBE. And first, ladies and gentlemen, to receive their
:11:17. > :11:40.runners-up cheque, your appreciation please for Mervyn King.
:11:41. > :11:53.And now, here to receive a Langholm glass trophy, a cheque for ?55,000,
:11:54. > :11:54.and the title of the 2014 Just Retirement world indoor singles
:11:55. > :12:23.champion, Darren Burnett! One more time, ladies and gentlemen,
:12:24. > :12:32.in his first world indoor singles final, the 2014 Just coming about
:12:33. > :12:33.retirement -- Just Retirement world in Gore singles champion, Darren
:12:34. > :12:47.Burnett! We have seen some fabulous bowls
:12:48. > :12:52.here this week at Potters, and there is more to come because later this
:12:53. > :12:59.year, the sport will be playing a key role in the Commonwealth games
:13:00. > :13:06.in Glasgow. 2014 is a bumper year in the sport of bowls. As well as the
:13:07. > :13:09.world indoor Championships, several bowlers are looking forward to the
:13:10. > :13:15.Commonwealth games where the sports will be one of the most popular
:13:16. > :13:18.events. We met up with the participant at Kelvingrove. The
:13:19. > :13:20.Scottish team for Glasgow will not be finalised until March, but the
:13:21. > :13:32.depth of talent to choose from events at present problem to have
:13:33. > :13:38.for the head coach and . The selection process is really key,
:13:39. > :13:42.from the very beginning we selection criteria so we have got the best
:13:43. > :13:49.team on form at any particular time. We have got to separate our emotions
:13:50. > :13:52.from selecting the team and I always said I would select the best team as
:13:53. > :13:58.if my life depended on it and the guys all know that. Being
:13:59. > :14:01.centrestage in Scotland will be a special moment for even the most
:14:02. > :14:06.seasoned bowls campaigners. Foster and Marshall have one pretty much
:14:07. > :14:11.every thing in the game including repairs gold in the 2006 Melbourne
:14:12. > :14:17.games. They will have the adrenaline pumping like never before. The
:14:18. > :14:23.Commonwealth games will be huge, everyone is talking about it. There
:14:24. > :14:27.is still couple of months left to see who will be selected, there are
:14:28. > :14:32.11 guys are still left who are all good enough so see what happens. You
:14:33. > :14:37.cannot get a bigger spectacle than playing in the Commonwealth Games in
:14:38. > :14:41.your own country. If I got picked to play and come away with a medal,
:14:42. > :14:47.obviously gold would be icing on the cake. The top-quality Kelvingrove
:14:48. > :14:54.green facilities sit right at the heart of Glasgow civil centre and at
:14:55. > :14:59.the shadow of the museum, the Art gallery building. Come July, this
:15:00. > :15:05.will be practised -- further home support. It is a great place to
:15:06. > :15:10.showcase the sport. Where are the stands going to be? It is going to
:15:11. > :15:15.be there, but bigger, and stand up there. It is going to be seats
:15:16. > :15:24.around here. Capacity, harmony people? 5000. It is going to be
:15:25. > :15:27.pretty amazing. This venue at Kelvingrove, it is
:15:28. > :15:32.probably the best bowling venue I have ever been to. Even coming here
:15:33. > :15:35.today in January, it still gives you goose bumps when you look at the
:15:36. > :15:40.architecture and the history of this place. We are in the heart of
:15:41. > :15:43.Glasgow here and we have got greens, six greens, just amazing. The
:15:44. > :15:45.support from the Scottish public will be incredible so we are really
:15:46. > :16:02.looking forward to it. The crowds are filing away behind
:16:03. > :16:05.me. Earlier this week, they were able to enjoy seeing two legends of
:16:06. > :16:10.the Commonwealth games laying on the portable rink in an exhibition
:16:11. > :16:15.match. A couple of men with amazing 15, wealth games appearances --
:16:16. > :16:27.Commonwealth games appearances between them.
:16:28. > :16:33.Our first player has appeared in a record eight Commonwealth Games, and
:16:34. > :16:37.has many medals to his credit. Ladies and gentlemen, the 1982 gold
:16:38. > :16:59.medallist, give it up for Willie Wood, MBE!
:17:00. > :17:05.And after winning six Commonwealth games, it is no wonder why our next
:17:06. > :17:08.player is rated as one of the best in the sport. The reigning
:17:09. > :17:29.Commonwealth games singles champion, give it up for Robert Weale!
:17:30. > :17:34.Willie Wood, a motor mechanic with his own business for most of his
:17:35. > :17:43.life. Needed to be like that because he was away so much. He has been
:17:44. > :17:49.around the world a few times. Robert has recently come back from New
:17:50. > :17:54.Zealand where he played in the outdoor Champion of champions event,
:17:55. > :17:57.first tour back after the injury he suffered, he will be hoping to go to
:17:58. > :18:06.the Commonwealth games in July with full fitness to defend his title.
:18:07. > :18:09.There should be plenty of time, I am sure sport Wales have got physios on
:18:10. > :18:13.the job, there should be plenty of time, I am sure sport Wales have got
:18:14. > :18:20.physios on the job, various other things dieticians, nutritionist,
:18:21. > :18:29.physios. In our day, you just turned up! Yes, you took your toothbrush
:18:30. > :19:16.and your bag of bowls! That was it, get on with it, guys!
:19:17. > :19:26.Close, very close with this. Oh, yes! He does not give up, does he?
:19:27. > :19:38.Three inches away! Oh, Robert, honestly.
:19:39. > :19:47.It is like a legends' tour, isn't it? We should get you down there,
:19:48. > :19:55.pricey! Willie is taking it fiercely, that was a great bowl.
:19:56. > :20:02.We could have brought you down there along with Tom, spreading the decade
:20:03. > :20:19.as well. Robert, you are in deep trouble!
:20:20. > :20:34.Not sure if Willie is trying to draw another one here. Very nearly! For
:20:35. > :20:43.old Robert. He is out there, defending champion. I match against
:20:44. > :20:52.him -- the match is against him and service the crowd! He does not have
:20:53. > :20:59.much of a chance! He has a wry smile. And Willie has a boulder.
:21:00. > :21:15.That makes it worse. Look at the concentration.
:21:16. > :21:19.He is going to stop! He is going to drop back for the shot, well played,
:21:20. > :21:41.Robert Weale! Goodlad. Saved the day for the modern player.
:21:42. > :21:47.Welsh pride is reinstated. I think I had someone in the crowd saying, oh,
:21:48. > :21:53.no! Confirmation from Sandra McLeish.
:21:54. > :22:20.Started well. It is coming back now. Just make it! The shot and the much
:22:21. > :22:28.do Robert Weale. He gets the bragging rights. Two Commonwealth
:22:29. > :22:34.legends, and Robert Nix it at the end. That'll put him in good form to
:22:35. > :22:40.defend his title come July. Well done, Robert Weale. Brilliant last
:22:41. > :22:50.bowl to take this mini match 2-1. A narrow defeat for Willie but pride
:22:51. > :22:54.in his performance, and also pride in the amount of medals we are
:22:55. > :23:02.seeing here for the Commonwealth games from Williams would -- Willie
:23:03. > :23:07.Wood and Robert Weale. Form is temporary class is permanent! It is!
:23:08. > :23:13.I have been lucky enough to hold my form for along time. All good things
:23:14. > :23:18.come to an end. I had to retire after 45 years playing for Scotland.
:23:19. > :23:23.I still play out do -- that was outdoors, I still play indoors but
:23:24. > :23:29.it is coming to an end as well. It was impressive this morning will
:23:30. > :23:33.stop you to do under the cosh. He has aways been great, I have known
:23:34. > :23:40.him a long time, ever pleasant and I have always had a pleasant time with
:23:41. > :23:47.him. It was 1982 when I started, I played him. Was in 1966 when you
:23:48. > :23:52.started? Yes, it was. Still going strong today. We remember the
:23:53. > :23:58.Commonwealth games in Delhi in 2010. You competed at the games for
:23:59. > :24:01.the eighth time, became the oldest competitor to compete at the
:24:02. > :24:05.Commonwealth Games. Very proud moment for you? Yes, it was. I have
:24:06. > :24:12.done it Commonwealth games. I was in the squad went it was in Edinburgh
:24:13. > :24:15.in 1986, but they declared me a professional and I had to pull out.
:24:16. > :24:20.I pulled out in one in Melbourne because I did not like the setup,
:24:21. > :24:25.they changed the game altogether by playing it into set and I pulled out
:24:26. > :24:33.of the squad so that might have been ten! It is a good thing it isn't,
:24:34. > :24:36.because Rob is about to make his eighth appearance in the Common
:24:37. > :24:45.rough games, equalling your record. Presuming everything is fit he will
:24:46. > :24:48.be there in Glasgow? It is only selection yet, I have owned a seven
:24:49. > :24:58.so far. I am just proud to make the squad this year. To equal the record
:24:59. > :25:02.such as his is immense. I had the pleasure of being in Delhi when you
:25:03. > :25:08.won the Commonwealth games, I saw you winning the medal and the
:25:09. > :25:15.reaction is something I will never forget. What about you? Winning that
:25:16. > :25:19.tie-break in Delhi, against an Australian who have always not been
:25:20. > :25:23.my favourite opponent in finals... It for me was great to get one over
:25:24. > :25:30.the old enemy, if you like. The emotion at the end, it's just came
:25:31. > :25:32.over me. To finally win gold after winning bronze and silver in
:25:33. > :25:38.singles, it was one of the proudest moment of my life. The BBC will be
:25:39. > :25:42.covering the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this year. He missed out in
:25:43. > :25:49.Edinburgh in 1986 but he was saying to me yesterday how it cited you are
:25:50. > :25:53.about the games being in Glasgow? I think it will be fantastic. The
:25:54. > :25:59.whole setup is up to standard, everything is going well. They have
:26:00. > :26:03.got good venues, I have been in Kelvingrove, had a couple of ends,
:26:04. > :26:09.it'll be an oppressive setup. You have got to be Chris Hoi velodrome,
:26:10. > :26:13.brand-new. Hampden Park for the athletics, Celtic Park for the
:26:14. > :26:17.opening ceremony. Everything is going according to plan and it is
:26:18. > :26:20.four years, it is hard work. It takes four years to organise a big
:26:21. > :26:29.thing like that! There is nothing to do every day. -- something to do
:26:30. > :26:31.every day. Congratulations to you guys. Good luck if you make it to
:26:32. > :26:39.the Commonwealth Games, and Willie, enjoy it.
:26:40. > :26:43.You can see the Commonwealth games on the BBC. One of the joys of being
:26:44. > :26:47.here all week is you have been seeing some outstanding bowls, here
:26:48. > :27:04.are our candidates for shot of the tournament.
:27:05. > :27:14.Trying his best to hold up. Oh, yes! Just made it! He wasn't sure for a
:27:15. > :27:17.long time. Just got in off the front bowl. A little regular from Andy.
:27:18. > :27:33.Just about enough weight. The weight on that line is pretty
:27:34. > :27:45.close. This is a big effort by Jonathan Ross. Very close! He has
:27:46. > :27:58.got three touchers definitely, has he got four? He has! And the
:27:59. > :28:04.competition for four touchers is a ?4000 in the equal to finals.
:28:05. > :28:10.He is trying to play across it, get onto the front bowl or the jack. He
:28:11. > :28:18.might take his own way but others to cover. What a result! He played it
:28:19. > :28:23.off the backhand. He knew it would be easier to play that role in
:28:24. > :28:29.weight on. Very well played. Stonking bowl from Mervyn King.
:28:30. > :28:38.I think she is close, getting something here.
:28:39. > :29:02.Catherine just sticking to the draw, getting a close one. This one looks
:29:03. > :29:08.better. She needs the bowl or the jack, got the jack, even better! A
:29:09. > :29:18.very good bowl. That brings her back green into play as well.
:29:19. > :29:26.Merv has played a lot of good bowls but he has knock got the advantage.
:29:27. > :29:50.He has got it again. He is asking for a runner here which
:29:51. > :29:58.is unusual. To bowls, brilliant! An absolutely brilliant results from
:29:59. > :30:02.the 18-year-old. Running bowl here, not a full drive. A perfect
:30:03. > :30:13.connection, takes the two reds away. She is a good talent.
:30:14. > :30:20.Mervyn trying hard with this. Has he got the jack? Has he ever! What
:30:21. > :30:24.about all! What a fantastic shot. A classic Mervyn King bowl, Jonathan
:30:25. > :30:37.Ross has laid to brilliant and he comes back and a system.
:30:38. > :30:42.Well, Mervyn King came up short in the final but Corky had a good look
:30:43. > :30:44.through all of those the final but Corky had a good look
:30:45. > :30:50.through all of shots and you have decided that Mervyn King's shot was
:30:51. > :30:53.the number one. Yes, we have seen a lot of good conversion shots and hit
:30:54. > :30:56.shot, but the draw shot was the king this week and Mervyn
:30:57. > :30:58.shot, but the draw shot was the king this week and played it superbly
:30:59. > :31:02.well. There was no space there, we thought he was bound to hit into it
:31:03. > :31:08.with pace, seven or eight inches between the two bowls and he drew it
:31:09. > :31:11.back. Jonathan Ross had a score of three and was in with a great chance
:31:12. > :31:16.and Mervyn King took it all away from him with that bowl, it was
:31:17. > :31:22.fantastic and set up Jonathan for the four touchers. Mervyn produced
:31:23. > :31:27.that over and over again. We will talk about those four touchers, it
:31:28. > :31:35.is a very rare thing in the sport of bowls, and there is a prize for the
:31:36. > :31:38.four touchers. Jonathan Ross, even though he didn't progress through
:31:39. > :31:49.the match, he earned a nice tidy sum. Yes, it turned out to be ?1000
:31:50. > :31:51.per bowl. We weren't sure at first, this was the second and we are not
:31:52. > :31:58.concerned about anything happened, it is exciting. That one just
:31:59. > :32:02.sneaked the jack. Where the crowd aware at this point? They weren't
:32:03. > :32:08.and we hadn't taken up too much thought about it. Whenever Mervyn
:32:09. > :32:14.moved the jack, it suddenly became open. I have watched this 15 or 20
:32:15. > :32:22.times and to be truthful, I can't see it moving. Just a gentle kiss.
:32:23. > :32:26.The key was looking at it from a different angle, the officials moved
:32:27. > :32:33.in right away, so well done to them and to Jonathan Ross. ?4000 for four
:32:34. > :32:35.touches, those are just some of the amazing bowls we have seen this week
:32:36. > :32:41.that perhaps might have got you inspired. The WBT decision to make
:32:42. > :32:44.the women's World Matchplay tournament qualification event for
:32:45. > :32:49.the first time this year has proven a great success and a final
:32:50. > :33:04.dominated by an 18-year-old newcomer, Catherine Bagnall, the new
:33:05. > :33:09.of Potters. -- Katherine. It was proved to be a game for all ages.
:33:10. > :33:12.That year, the twins lit up the competition but they didn't make the
:33:13. > :33:14.cut this year the 2014 Championships, although Kelly will
:33:15. > :33:19.be playing at the Commonwealth Games. But they have been spreading
:33:20. > :33:25.the gospel to youngsters in Newport as part of the BBC's Get Inspired
:33:26. > :33:29.campaign, to get young people playing sport for health and
:33:30. > :33:32.enjoyment. We are doing the coaching to see how the youngsters are doing,
:33:33. > :33:34.to see how they are progressing and how to bring the fun factor into
:33:35. > :33:48.bowls. Go on, this time, big Katherine.
:33:49. > :33:52.Everybody sees bowls as an old person's sport, so we are trying to
:33:53. > :33:55.get youngsters involved. And it clearly isn't, there are a lot of
:33:56. > :34:00.youngsters here and it is really interesting, it has done really
:34:01. > :34:03.well. Former world champion and BBC commentator John Price is head of
:34:04. > :34:06.development for the sport in Wales and knows the importance of getting
:34:07. > :34:14.people on the rink and inspired by the game. We are looking to sell the
:34:15. > :34:17.game to all ages and we are looking at development, the Middle age
:34:18. > :34:22.groups, people coming from other sports like Rugby football and the
:34:23. > :34:26.younger age groups to retirement. It is a great game whatever age. Having
:34:27. > :34:31.the girls then with the youngsters and the juniors, they are icons in
:34:32. > :34:34.Welsh bowls, it is nice for the youngsters to get involved in the
:34:35. > :34:38.coaching side and get involved with the clubs as well and we want to
:34:39. > :34:41.encourage that as the Welsh bowls Federation, produce young
:34:42. > :34:45.ambassadors who are going to do the job for us and encourages into the
:34:46. > :34:49.sport. For Kerry and Kelly, involvement in bowls has proven to
:34:50. > :34:53.be alive changing experience, with international honours and world
:34:54. > :35:00.travel -- life changing. But they came to the sport almost by
:35:01. > :35:04.accident. Every Sunday... Every Sunday, we used to play badminton,
:35:05. > :35:08.table tennis, and we both had ?1 left in our pockets only ask at
:35:09. > :35:13.reception what we could do for ?1, and they said the only thing going
:35:14. > :35:17.is bowls. We looked at each other and said, what is that? They took us
:35:18. > :35:20.right to the back of the stadium, you wouldn't know it is there, and
:35:21. > :35:25.we went in there and they were so friendly, so we have done it ever
:35:26. > :35:28.since. And we have become really good, playing internationals. We
:35:29. > :35:34.love it, it is a really enjoyable sport. The great advantage of the
:35:35. > :35:42.game of bowls is anyone can give it a try at any age, so we took light
:35:43. > :35:51.heavyweight champion Nathan cleverly to Newport Bowls club to have a go.
:35:52. > :35:56.We asked if he was hard enough. Not bad, not bad. As well as a top
:35:57. > :36:00.boxer, Nathan is a Cardiff University maths graduate, so he
:36:01. > :36:07.knows it too thing about -- a thing two about accuracy. It was great, it
:36:08. > :36:12.was different from the intensity of boxing. Something like bowls is
:36:13. > :36:15.relaxed, getting the angles and the weight and trajectory right. It is
:36:16. > :36:24.part and parcel of the game. I think I did quite well. It is a really
:36:25. > :36:28.good game for people coming into sport, if you are competitive and
:36:29. > :36:32.want to keep competitive, this is a good game. One of the most famous
:36:33. > :36:39.bowlers was Colin Jones, a famous boxer and is a very good player, he
:36:40. > :36:43.has played internationally indoor and outdoor, so it shows you can
:36:44. > :36:51.come in from another sport. Sport is a massive factor growing up. It is a
:36:52. > :36:57.massive factor in their lives, and it has played a massive part in my
:36:58. > :37:00.life, besides education, as a past time and a hobby to keep your mind
:37:01. > :37:04.active and keep you physically fit. It is very important.
:37:05. > :37:12.I would say definitely give it a go. Come down on Sunday when they have
:37:13. > :37:17.coaching and give it a go, see what you think. It is a really, really
:37:18. > :37:22.good sport. You can have a get and a really good time. It is refreshing
:37:23. > :37:26.to have some youngsters coming through and the Packer twins are
:37:27. > :37:33.leading the way, and hopefully it will inspire a lot of other
:37:34. > :37:37.youngsters to get involved. Get Inspired is all about having a go
:37:38. > :37:40.and enjoying whatever sport you take to at any standard. If you want to
:37:41. > :37:45.know more, check out the BBC website. Get inspired.
:37:46. > :37:51.Well, a young lady who produced an inspired performance earlier this
:37:52. > :38:01.week was 18-year-old Katherine Rednall in the ladies' final. The
:38:02. > :38:05.family of Katherine Rednall are just ready to go mad at this.
:38:06. > :38:13.You don't get players at this level playing that well. That looks like
:38:14. > :38:14.it is very close to number two. I wouldn't be surprised if Rebecca
:38:15. > :38:31.just shake hands with this. That is absolutely definitely two.
:38:32. > :38:34.It is all over, two shots. Well, the defending champion loses out in this
:38:35. > :38:39.year's final of the World Matchplay ladies singles, and I have to say,
:38:40. > :38:45.Katherine Rednall, the 18-year-old from Ipswich, was absolutely superb.
:38:46. > :38:49.It was an exhibition from her from about the second or third end. Her
:38:50. > :38:57.family very happy, and so they should be. She was cool, she was
:38:58. > :38:58.calm, she was brilliant. The 2014 ladies match play champion,
:38:59. > :39:16.Katherine Rednall! Well, yes, indeed Katherine Rednall
:39:17. > :39:20.was inspired but so was the man to my left, Darren Burnett, an
:39:21. > :39:25.inspirational performance. You have had a few minutes to let it all sink
:39:26. > :39:29.in, what is the feeling now? It hasn't changed, it will probably
:39:30. > :39:32.take several days... In fact, it will probably be after we go to
:39:33. > :39:36.Blackpool before I really take it all in. I have got the world
:39:37. > :39:42.championship, I know that, but it is hard to take it in. Any chance to
:39:43. > :39:45.check your messages yet? Yes, lots of good friends, lots of good
:39:46. > :39:50.bowling friends have flooded the texts, I have got through some of
:39:51. > :39:57.them. Just tell us about the moment when you lifted the 2014 World
:39:58. > :40:01.Indoor Bowls Championships and it was yours. It is an unbelievable
:40:02. > :40:04.feeling. I have obviously knocked on the door before, and a good few
:40:05. > :40:07.years ago I was probably playing at my peak and you wonder if you have
:40:08. > :40:13.missed your chance. I got the final this year, I was playing well and I
:40:14. > :40:16.thought I had to grab it. Corky, as Darren says, there are times when an
:40:17. > :40:19.athlete or a performer knows they are playing well and when they miss
:40:20. > :40:24.out, they maybe feel the chance has gone, but in the sport of bowls, you
:40:25. > :40:27.get another chance. You can, but there are so many good players
:40:28. > :40:31.coming through like Stewart Anderson, Paul Foster riding the
:40:32. > :40:34.crest of a wave, and you think, I haven't played at my best for six or
:40:35. > :40:37.seven years and you are coming back every year thinking there is a
:40:38. > :40:42.chance. I think Darren was slightly different this year. He relaxed and
:40:43. > :40:46.all of a sudden it started to happen. I did say to him, it was the
:40:47. > :40:49.best I have seen him play for a long time. Reminders, because in the
:40:50. > :40:53.interview immediately after the match can be said you came here not
:40:54. > :40:59.dealing in any decent form -- remind us. Yes, I didn't think I was
:41:00. > :41:03.playing my best and if you're not doing that against these guys, you
:41:04. > :41:07.won't win games, so I wasn't playing where I wanted to be. I definitely
:41:08. > :41:11.relax. I came to win the first round and after that, I just enjoyed my
:41:12. > :41:14.bowls and it has worked hand-in-hand. You must have watched
:41:15. > :41:21.Moulin in the week and thought, gosh, he's playing well? -- Mervyn.
:41:22. > :41:24.Sometimes, I turned the telly off and stopped watching them! He is a
:41:25. > :41:29.great player and I knew I had to mix it up. What have the girls said you
:41:30. > :41:36.can meet your trio of girls, including those two naughty kids?
:41:37. > :41:39.They are a little young to fully understand that I'm sure they will
:41:40. > :41:42.look back on it as a great moment in our lives. Corky, we have seen some
:41:43. > :41:47.matches this week that have been right up there with the best of the
:41:48. > :41:50.best. How would you sum up the tournament? Interesting from the
:41:51. > :41:54.point of view that the draw shot has been wonderful this week and has had
:41:55. > :41:57.crucial moments. The match against Nicky Brett with Mervyn was out of
:41:58. > :42:02.this world, the two semifinals were great games, and you are sort of
:42:03. > :42:09.thinking, can it get better? When it gets to the last Katherine Rednall
:42:10. > :42:13.in -- the last bowl in a tie-break, it doesn't get better. Thank you
:42:14. > :42:19.very much, we have come to the end of the week here. We have seen some
:42:20. > :42:22.amazing bowls. Darren Burnett is Crown the 2014 World Indoor Bowls
:42:23. > :42:36.Championships it is fair to say he's going to leave Potters very happy.
:42:37. > :42:59.# Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof.
:43:00. > :43:05.# Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth.
:43:06. > :43:10.# Clap along if you know what happiness is to you.
:43:11. > :43:16.# Clap along if you feel like that's what you want to do.
:43:17. > :43:22.# Here comes bad news talking this and that.
:43:23. > :43:27.# Give me all you got and don't hold back.
:43:28. > :43:33.# I should probably warn you all be just fine.
:43:34. > :43:36.# No offence to you, don't waste your time.
:43:37. > :43:41.Here is why. # Because I'm happy.
:43:42. > :43:45.# Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof.
:43:46. > :43:51.# Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth.
:43:52. > :43:57.# Clap along if you know what happiness is to you.
:43:58. > :44:03.# Clap along if you feel like that's what you want to do.
:44:04. > :44:04.# Clap along if you feel like
