:00:35. > :00:42.The APPLAUSE Hello everybody and welcome to the

:00:43. > :00:50.Potters leisure resort on the used coast of England at Hopton on Sea.

:00:51. > :00:54.Seven days of top-quality bowls, four trophies up for grabs, the

:00:55. > :01:02.first of those up for grabs this afternoon with the final of the

:01:03. > :01:11.pairs. It is the big day for Scotland. First up the pairs world

:01:12. > :01:14.final which is an all tartan affair. Stewart Anderson and Darren Burnett

:01:15. > :01:21.against good friends Colin Walker and Ronnie Duncan. And then it is

:01:22. > :01:25.the turn of the defending singles champion Alex Marshall MBA to begin

:01:26. > :01:32.his quest for a magnificent seventh title. It promises to be an epic

:01:33. > :01:48.afternoon of entertainment at the home of bowls. -- MBE. We start with

:01:49. > :01:52.the pairs. They are both former singles winners but now they are

:01:53. > :02:07.teaming up trying to win this title for the first time together.

:02:08. > :02:18.It is the home of bowls, Potters. There is no arena like it anywhere

:02:19. > :02:26.in the world. 1200 people and extras. It does not get any better

:02:27. > :02:31.than that. It is the first thing I look to come to, it is absolutely

:02:32. > :02:35.amazing. People who have not been the foremost come and watch. The

:02:36. > :02:44.spectators are fabulous, win or lose. It is the first event we play

:02:45. > :02:47.down here, we reached the final before, unfortunately we lost but to

:02:48. > :02:53.get back into the final it has been a long time coming. I think it is

:02:54. > :03:01.six years ago we formed as a partnership and we got to the final.

:03:02. > :03:08.Now we're in the top 16 and we have decided to partner up. This year it

:03:09. > :03:11.seems to be going well. The world singles is probably the event, we do

:03:12. > :03:18.not have a lot of chances to play together at this level. To be the

:03:19. > :03:25.world pairs champion would be wonderful. Colin has been here a few

:03:26. > :03:29.years now with Ronnie, but think we are playing well enough and we are

:03:30. > :03:33.forward to it. Standing in their way, Colin Walker and Ronnie Duncan

:03:34. > :03:38.who had to come through a qualifying event in Falkirk just to get here.

:03:39. > :03:43.They have caused some shocks including the defeat of Paul Foster

:03:44. > :03:46.and Alex Marshall in the semifinals. They are bidding to become the first

:03:47. > :03:51.unseeded pair to win the title since 2004. They have been the best

:03:52. > :04:12.friends for the first part of two decades. -- for the best part.

:04:13. > :04:19.Around about 16 years I think we have been friends. It has been a

:04:20. > :04:23.long partnership. Some good successes and I think you learn from

:04:24. > :04:29.your mistakes when you have been as long together. I have always led the

:04:30. > :04:33.partnership and Colin has always skipped. Because we have played with

:04:34. > :04:40.each other in pairs, triples and fours we know each other's game like

:04:41. > :04:47.the back of a hand. We are very comfortable playing as a partnership

:04:48. > :04:51.together. It has been a great run so far and then somebody tells you you

:04:52. > :04:54.are playing against the Commonwealth Games and world champions. You

:04:55. > :05:00.cannot get much better than that. These two guys are good friends as

:05:01. > :05:05.well. I think that makes it even harder to play against these guys

:05:06. > :05:10.when you are friendly with them. But we dug deep and we got there in the

:05:11. > :05:14.end. It should be a great game, Stewart and Darren both former

:05:15. > :05:18.singles champions they have obviously won here before. They are

:05:19. > :05:23.all so again international colleagues in the Scotland team and

:05:24. > :05:29.they are friends so it is certainly not going to be any easier than when

:05:30. > :05:38.we played Alec Sample. It is another one of those things -- Alex and

:05:39. > :05:42.Paul. We will need to play well. We go in as underdogs so obviously the

:05:43. > :05:46.crowd likes a good game so it would be nice if the crowd could be on

:05:47. > :05:50.your side and hopefully we can compete well against them and get

:05:51. > :05:58.close to them and put them under pressure. And hopefully we can do it

:05:59. > :06:00.at the end of the day. We have won the Scottish pairs and we are the

:06:01. > :06:09.current British pairs holders so to add the world indoors pairs title

:06:10. > :06:16.would be a dream come true. You have met the men competing on the blue

:06:17. > :06:21.rink this afternoon, one way or another Scotland will be

:06:22. > :06:27.celebrating. It is time now to say hello to Richard Beck, MC this

:06:28. > :06:32.afternoon. Yes it is indeed an all Scottish affair and now our first

:06:33. > :06:33.pair, the reigning British champions, Ronnie Walker and Colin

:06:34. > :07:03.Duncan. APPLAUSE And now, ladies and in command, will

:07:04. > :07:08.you please welcome the 2013 finalists, hoping to go one better

:07:09. > :07:09.today, ladies and gentlemen, your appreciation, please, for Stewart

:07:10. > :07:35.Anderson and Darren Burnett. Lovely atmosphere inside the

:07:36. > :07:40.auditorium here at Potters and we have former world champion Andy

:07:41. > :07:47.Thomson alongside David Corkill in the commentary box. Set for a great

:07:48. > :07:52.week. HOOTER COMMENTATOR: Sorry about that, bit

:07:53. > :07:57.of a problem. LAUGHTER I think it will be an interesting

:07:58. > :08:03.game. Obviously Colin said they are underdogs, however they are playing

:08:04. > :08:11.well. Taking out Paul Foster and Alex Marshall I cannot really see

:08:12. > :08:15.Ronnie Duncan and Colin being too much of an underdogs. They have

:08:16. > :08:21.taken out the world champions. I think it is going to be very, very

:08:22. > :08:43.tight. I agree, David, should be a cracker.

:08:44. > :08:50.Good steady start for both pairs, that is what they are aiming for.

:08:51. > :09:59.APPLAUSE All of these players, elite squad

:10:00. > :10:02.players for the Scottish international team. Ronnie and Colin

:10:03. > :10:11.are going off to New Zealand very shortly. They will be absent from

:10:12. > :10:17.the Scottish indoor team which might give the other countries a bit of a

:10:18. > :10:21.help. As well as Colin and Rowley, Iain Maclean and one or two others

:10:22. > :10:35.are going to be missing. John prices taking them away. -- John Price is

:10:36. > :10:37.taking them away. Chance here. There is going to be pressure on Darren,

:10:38. > :10:51.they could be three shot down. Just struggling for weight. Taking

:10:52. > :11:41.one away. Chance for Colin, just dropping

:11:42. > :12:31.short. Spare shot. Jacquelin 29 metres. -- jack length

:12:32. > :12:36.29 metres. Quite a common feature I think throughout this game. Both

:12:37. > :12:47.pairs favouring the slightly longer length bull.

:12:48. > :13:39.Good adjustment that you would expect him to reach the jack and

:13:40. > :13:47.even pass it. This is pressure, if he gets the ball -- if he gets this

:13:48. > :13:51.marvel in Colin is under pressure. Good example of what you are doing,

:13:52. > :14:00.you're trying to lengthen the jack and get up to it. That takes the

:14:01. > :14:20.front bowls out of play. Nice shot here for Colin on the forehand side.

:14:21. > :14:50.Good line. It is all about weight, trying to get back to the jack. Well

:14:51. > :14:57.played. Problematic for Colin, he could take the bowls out but the

:14:58. > :15:02.jack is likely to move. Certainly not going to be easy to draw red. I

:15:03. > :15:16.think he is sticking to the draw. He had the choice to drive. -- to draw

:15:17. > :15:24.it. I do not think he is there. Just needed another two feet mat. -- on

:15:25. > :15:30.that. Definite spare a chance opportunity, last bowl of the end,

:15:31. > :15:32.no reply if you pop one in. These are the ones that add up throughout

:15:33. > :15:57.a game. Not quite. Both missed chances. Both

:15:58. > :16:06.pairs will be happy with this, good start. Both on the board. Especially

:16:07. > :16:13.over 11 ends, two sets, more than enough to separate the two pairs but

:16:14. > :16:23.of course we have three and tie-break -- three end tie-break if

:16:24. > :16:28.required, so potential 25 ends. Not many spare seats, David. It is very

:16:29. > :17:30.popular, the pairs events. That is very uncharacteristic of

:17:31. > :17:39.Stewart Anderson. Very much so. Normally very consistent on the

:17:40. > :17:46.jack. If he misses one he is normally making the adjustment. Just

:17:47. > :17:53.took too much off, you expect Ronnie to add another here. Just struggles

:17:54. > :18:09.to get back to centre rink although this is looking pretty good. Always

:18:10. > :18:16.useful there. Darren slightly prefers a backhand in this

:18:17. > :18:21.direction. Trying to get a good second bowl in. He has a strong bias

:18:22. > :18:43.bowl. I do not think he is on this one. Oh

:18:44. > :18:53.dear. What is happening here, three shortfalls? Shaking his head, this

:18:54. > :19:06.is a bad end from them. Big chance for Colin. He is calling it past the

:19:07. > :19:12.front one, it is definitely in. There is nothing behind the head.

:19:13. > :19:25.Running bowl. Forehand draw. There is room.

:19:26. > :19:42.That is a great bowl from Darren Burnett. Darren is three or four

:19:43. > :19:53.inches off. He was looking to cut down the count. Getting shot is an

:19:54. > :19:57.extra bonus. However the position is all about Ronnie and Colin has a

:19:58. > :20:03.good chance of running through this head. Absolutely, with weight, to

:20:04. > :20:15.clean it out for free. Looks like he is under. Did not get the lucky rub.

:20:16. > :20:22.That was an escape. Good goal by Darryl -- Darren Burnett. Shows the

:20:23. > :20:34.difficulty of playing those running bowls. Those are the bowls you do

:20:35. > :20:38.not want to get sucked into that you have to play them. That control

:20:39. > :20:49.weight, trying to get through on to the jack.

:20:50. > :21:02.Favourite length for Darren and Stewart, 29.5. They tend to playful

:21:03. > :21:15.lengths most games. -- they tend to play full lengths will stop that is

:21:16. > :21:24.Colin Walker was a son Cian and his wife Morag. Julie Forrest in the

:21:25. > :21:30.background. Julie in her first time out Potters. They have played well

:21:31. > :21:41.in the mixed pairs. It should be a good final tomorrow.

:21:42. > :21:59.Certainly looking better. Well played, Stewart Anderson.

:22:00. > :22:10.Slightly better heads coming in this direction. Players getting bowls

:22:11. > :22:22.close. On the forehand which is unusual this way, most players in

:22:23. > :22:29.this event play on the backhand. This is four of the best players in

:22:30. > :22:40.Scotland, indoor and outdoor. Darren Burnett and Stewart Anderson worked

:22:41. > :22:43.in Cyprus just before Christmas. For two and a half weeks, making sure

:22:44. > :22:51.their team qualified for the World Championships in Christchurch in

:22:52. > :22:56.December. I believe Darren and Stewart got the gold medal in the

:22:57. > :23:10.triples. Suitably successful. Along with Neil Speirs.

:23:11. > :23:14.Colin is having a look. He must have this. APPLAUSE

:23:15. > :23:34.Great bowl. The trail short, quite a difficult

:23:35. > :23:39.shot normally on the carpet and Colin played well. I think with this

:23:40. > :23:45.distance you have more of a chance of making those kind of trail shots.

:23:46. > :23:51.This gives you a little bit better chance, the longer length. Just a

:23:52. > :24:06.draw here for Darren, trying to draw the winner.

:24:07. > :24:18.I think he has missed his line. Two opportunities here for Colin to draw

:24:19. > :24:24.another one. If his little bit widely could ease the green bowl

:24:25. > :24:28.away and make three out of it. I thought it was just the one. He can

:24:29. > :24:46.draw for three. Certainly put this on wide. Does not

:24:47. > :24:51.want to push the green bowling for second bowl. If he comes around it

:24:52. > :25:27.he'll be good but you don't want to touch it. Stop an inch short.

:25:28. > :26:22.Go on, finish this. Right up. Very good. APPLAUSE

:26:23. > :26:29.Great reply from Stewart Anderson. Two of the best leads around the

:26:30. > :26:33.British Isles, indoor and outdoor. No doubt about that, Stewart as you

:26:34. > :26:37.say in the elite squad, I am sure he will probably be selected in the

:26:38. > :26:50.final five for New Zealand at the end of this year. However Stewart

:26:51. > :27:10.does skip for Scotland. Greatly. Very, very small gap. Two options.

:27:11. > :27:13.Much safer shot. I agree, I think he said there was a small gap that if

:27:14. > :27:24.he does touch if it will move into the red. He wants to slip the short

:27:25. > :27:31.one. He has not posted to overthrow no damage done. Another third or so

:27:32. > :27:38.and I think that is why Darren have the option to play the forehand. He

:27:39. > :27:46.knew the weight and the line and on the back and they have been dropping

:27:47. > :27:50.short. You can hear Ronnie saying all you need is a foot of running

:27:51. > :28:01.and the jack should spring to the back red one.

:28:02. > :28:19.He has green it. It is a matter of weight whether he has enough to do

:28:20. > :28:23.the damage. Very good bowl. It is one of those ones where you just

:28:24. > :28:31.want to get the thin edge and he hit it absolutely plumb Centre bowl.

:28:32. > :28:34.Colin shaking his head, he knew he was slightly heavy. It was a good

:28:35. > :29:05.bowl of just a yard over. Not sure about this one. Mostly

:29:06. > :29:13.because of his line. He needs to this Darren's last bowl. That is a

:29:14. > :29:33.chance. I would expect Darren to add another. He has had two pops at it.

:29:34. > :29:45.He is safe as houses. Colin Walker just a bit unlucky hitting that two

:29:46. > :30:15.solid. I think Darren and Stewart did have

:30:16. > :30:24.a chat thereabout the jack length. The final conclusion was, let's keep

:30:25. > :30:28.it long again. No reason not to. As the game progresses one of the

:30:29. > :30:29.players might think about a change. They are both currently happy on the

:30:30. > :31:06.full length. Great line. The line was absolutely

:31:07. > :31:30.perfect. Though short. Yes, anything after his own bowl or

:31:31. > :31:37.beyond will be good. Just dipping into it. The thing is it is a good

:31:38. > :31:43.ball at this level against these guys. He probably wanted it just

:31:44. > :31:49.slightly further, as you say it is 14 inches short, it is a good bowl.

:31:50. > :31:59.His line is good, it is all about pace. He still needs to hurry. Yes,

:32:00. > :32:12.he has made it. That is what you would expect. Walker. Walking down,

:32:13. > :32:18.the inform man, he has told me he is not the manager, he is a four-man.

:32:19. > :32:24.They will properly be watching, will we tell them about the interviews

:32:25. > :32:32.and make up that being done. A particularly tidy shade of eyeliner.

:32:33. > :32:37.You know all about that David. The guys will be giving him a hard time

:32:38. > :32:41.when he gets back. Once again I think that Darren Burnett is very

:32:42. > :32:47.close to drawing the winner here. He falls in and he has got the shot.

:32:48. > :32:52.Yes, that is the winner. He is playing well. He has been playing

:32:53. > :33:04.well for the last week or so in different events. Also in the mixed

:33:05. > :33:09.pairs final as well. Two finals, and he is still going in the single.

:33:10. > :33:12.This is Greg Harlow to play in the singles, I think that will be a

:33:13. > :33:25.really good game. That is a tough one. Better. Yes he is

:33:26. > :33:36.acknowledging, I think he has got the shot. Stewart is looking at

:33:37. > :33:44.possibly taking the two Red Bull is out, you knows how good Darren is

:33:45. > :33:49.with that weighted ball. Chances here, I cannot really see it going

:33:50. > :33:55.wrong. The two balls will disappear but it is just how many green ones

:33:56. > :34:02.will go at the same time and that is where the difficulty is. They are

:34:03. > :34:07.one up front, they had to think about whether they are prepared to

:34:08. > :34:13.attack this with the possibility of losing more than one at this end. I

:34:14. > :34:18.think they would be lucky to lose more than one, with the strike

:34:19. > :34:24.however Darren has played such a good opening ball, they might just

:34:25. > :34:31.stick to the draw. -- opening bowl. I think that is what he's going to

:34:32. > :34:40.go for, drawing the women are. Yes it is also a factor, too handy, just

:34:41. > :34:44.one in it. It is not a disaster comedy has got a chance with this if

:34:45. > :34:51.he runs the distance. It is going to be a lack in pace, run of the line.

:34:52. > :35:02.Final target. Just needed another 15 inches. Seeing the green bowl at the

:35:03. > :35:17.bottom of the screen, fresh start, count to all three.

:35:18. > :35:33.-- two or three. Good weight. Good effort, give it a chance. All things

:35:34. > :36:00.very tight, ?6, 5-5, five games to go. -- six ends. Five ends to go.

:36:01. > :36:10.The Jack length is 28 and a half metres. There is not really an awful

:36:11. > :36:15.lot happening between the two Jack lengths. At some stage of the game,

:36:16. > :36:26.if it starts to go wrong, they will switch to 23 or 24

:36:27. > :36:30.metres to make a change. It is a decent start. At both stage they are

:36:31. > :36:31.both playing quite well at this length so neither is wanting to

:36:32. > :36:47.change. It has got the right pace now, it

:36:48. > :37:04.has got the right pace. Ease up, ease up. Yes.

:37:05. > :37:15.Anything on his last bolt is good. Suggesting it is a bit heavy. He

:37:16. > :37:20.knew that out of the hand, it is a good sign. Just slightly heavy,

:37:21. > :37:28.indicated he had maybe pushed this one a little bit. Good smooth

:37:29. > :37:44.delivery from Stuart Anderson comedy gets the ball away well.

:37:45. > :37:51.It could be a second. They have got to force it back to the right-hand

:37:52. > :38:02.side, it is now blocked out. The call-out is very, very close to

:38:03. > :38:43.the second. Darren gave the comment, I have no

:38:44. > :38:50.idea. It usually means he is close. It is not a good sign, but not

:38:51. > :38:56.far-away. That one might just have dropped away. I think that last bolt

:38:57. > :39:03.has given Colin problems. If there are three in a deal, definitely

:39:04. > :39:07.coming down with the weight. Ronnie suggesting that the last bolt may

:39:08. > :39:14.well be in, you are right, he is two all three down. The options, looking

:39:15. > :39:20.to come through here, if he does make contact on that, even that

:39:21. > :39:26.bowl, will give him the angle into the jack. If he brings it all of the

:39:27. > :39:31.way through to hear or beyond. That is good. And of course we have got

:39:32. > :39:36.the re-spot position which is over this direction. Lots of things

:39:37. > :39:41.available. I agree, I think it is worth being positive, both of the

:39:42. > :39:50.green bowls are in the line of the draw, this will be something to play

:39:51. > :39:54.with. I think that he is still sticking to the draw, this is very

:39:55. > :40:05.difficult on the way in, he could easily get blocked out here. That is

:40:06. > :40:10.a good bowl. That is a great bowl from Colin Walker. It looked as if

:40:11. > :40:16.he was going to get blocked out, a clear path on side, it looks as

:40:17. > :40:25.though, he is just inside, it is a winner, well played. One inch away

:40:26. > :40:33.from losing three there. The problem is reversed for Darren now. He has

:40:34. > :40:39.got two back balls against him. I would agree, the ball onto the jack

:40:40. > :40:44.is two or three down. He pushes the red ball onto the jack, varies

:40:45. > :40:50.trouble. If we are looking at it, we are going to draw, a little touch on

:40:51. > :40:55.the jack would be very beneficial. The difficulty is, it is these two

:40:56. > :41:00.balls on the back, that is the issue, they have to be careful that

:41:01. > :41:06.the jack does not run through. I think that Stewart is indicating,

:41:07. > :41:11.normally good at these running bowls. Punched the ball through the

:41:12. > :41:22.gap, if you miss that you might get the jack. He has been very positive,

:41:23. > :41:28.you don't want the ball onto the jack. He is under, that is

:41:29. > :41:30.fortunate, I don't think it has cost him anything. The one at the back,

:41:31. > :42:06.savouring that one. Once again, Ronnie and Colin did

:42:07. > :42:18.have a little chat. Running the jack. The answer is, keep it long.

:42:19. > :43:03.Jack length, 29 metres. Come on, all of the way, great lying

:43:04. > :43:18.there. In the middle, there we come. Good.

:43:19. > :43:42.This is for one. Still heading up. OK. You like, seven inches. String a

:43:43. > :43:48.better one. It is interesting seeing these two skies competing against

:43:49. > :43:54.each other, because the lead position, is on offer for New

:43:55. > :43:56.Zealand. It certainly is. One player obviously, missing from the team,

:43:57. > :44:08.from Glasgow. It is a position, that I think that

:44:09. > :44:13.Ronnie and Stuart are properly buying for, and I think Stewart is

:44:14. > :44:22.in pole position but I think a lot can happen. It is just a draw here

:44:23. > :44:31.for Colin Walker. Seven inches short, Stewart Anderson. That is the

:44:32. > :44:44.target. Trying to beat that bowl. He is indicating that is heavy, he is a

:44:45. > :44:48.bit quick on that one. Darren playing his favourite backhand in

:44:49. > :44:58.that direction, he prefers this side of the carpet. Clear run, he scores.

:44:59. > :45:08.Yes, that is the second. Behind the jack. Rest to get to

:45:09. > :45:19.number one. With his bowls, it is a good swinging forehand. Ronny giving

:45:20. > :45:26.this a bit of attention, he needs to stop, I think he is still a bit

:45:27. > :45:39.quick. Touching the jack. I don't think it has made any difference to

:45:40. > :45:46.the two. World Darren Burnett, drawing on the forehand, that was an

:45:47. > :45:52.open forehand. It has got to be a forehand raw, there is no point

:45:53. > :45:56.giving the shot away, it is a nice open forehand. I know he does prefer

:45:57. > :46:05.to bat but I think he has got to change here. A chance of a three, it

:46:06. > :46:11.will be the first treble of the match, a special opportunity. Both

:46:12. > :46:16.have had chances to add, to make three and they have not added them.

:46:17. > :46:19.This looks better, like the third shortcoming in. Gentles gently, you

:46:20. > :46:35.don't want the jack. APPLAUSE Never see the bowls coming in, it

:46:36. > :46:37.does not want any movement on the jack, just touching it. It still

:46:38. > :47:09.counts as three. It is the first time there has been

:47:10. > :47:26.made shot gap between the pair. It is vital that they score this end.

:47:27. > :47:57.Come on, up here. OK. Really good, it has dropped round, it in this

:47:58. > :48:01.area, it is really good. A lot of things very good there? Yes I think

:48:02. > :48:07.that Darren has basically said that he is very happy with this position,

:48:08. > :48:12.anything behind the jack is good. He is urging this ball on. Is looking

:48:13. > :48:18.for this want to come in behind the jack. That is what he wanted, as

:48:19. > :48:28.long as it did not finish jack high. Set your skip up. Add the pressure

:48:29. > :48:33.to the opposition. We always think that the ninth end is critical. But

:48:34. > :48:38.Hind, the team cannot really afford to lose the shot. -- behind that,

:48:39. > :48:50.the team cannot really afford to lose the shot. I agree David, this

:48:51. > :48:54.is a vital end for that man. They are obviously going to anticipate

:48:55. > :48:58.what Colin is going to play, he may go for the spot here. Colin Walker

:48:59. > :49:22.in a bit of trouble. He has gone high, he has gone for

:49:23. > :49:32.the spot. Darren realises, he is going to have

:49:33. > :49:40.to attack that, he cannot afford to lose spots. It is covered now. It is

:49:41. > :49:46.not a big target either for Colin, this is not easy. If you get a big

:49:47. > :49:50.crunch on the jack you will get a result for its. They are going to

:49:51. > :49:56.jam the jack against the back ball, in the hope of getting it moved.

:49:57. > :50:02.Close to this. It needs to come back. He has taken one out, second

:50:03. > :50:05.best. The value of that green ball being behind the jack, there was no

:50:06. > :50:17.other damage that was going to be done. You have got the spot there,

:50:18. > :50:28.it is just a case, kicking it, it is just the same. We can see three red

:50:29. > :50:35.balls, there. That is the thing with these guys, they are so tactically

:50:36. > :50:40.aware. They are not going to make mistakes on the shot selection.

:50:41. > :51:03.Similar fit. Darren says it is a long way to run.

:51:04. > :51:10.It does not look too bad from here. That looks pretty good. Bend away

:51:11. > :51:14.now, bend away now. He is really not sure about that one. He was playing

:51:15. > :51:16.it well. There were a couple of times where he wasn't sure, he

:51:17. > :51:32.didn't know. Two Green. So that is a big bowl, in

:51:33. > :51:45.the context of this set, he needs to make a connection. Once again, it is

:51:46. > :51:51.not easy. Not much of a target. He needs to push on his own bowl to

:51:52. > :52:02.take the second away, he has got it. It was not far away from the target.

:52:03. > :52:11.He was getting nothing for being high. A reasonable results, taking

:52:12. > :52:29.one out. 9-6. -- a reasonable results.

:52:30. > :52:35.The players at this level will err on the right side to get a

:52:36. > :52:42.percentage shot, Collingwood would have loved to have scrunched the

:52:43. > :52:46.jack there,. He was in the target area, but it was not a big target,

:52:47. > :52:51.it was a single ball, so he did quite well to get a single ball over

:52:52. > :53:02.that. However, they know that they must score this entry keeper set

:53:03. > :53:21.going. -- this end to keep the set going. APPLAUSE

:53:22. > :53:28.Jack is about six inches. Stewart is just likely starting to wind the

:53:29. > :53:38.Leeds battle. That was a good ball. -- win the leader's battle. That is

:53:39. > :53:57.going to be good. Once again. Starting to dominate the front-end.

:53:58. > :54:10.Just over it. Yes Colin has faced a couple of difficult heads, and has

:54:11. > :54:19.had a very difficult draw earlier in the set. The same with the free.

:54:20. > :54:22.Well, Darren and Stewart thinking about this, I don't think Darren

:54:23. > :54:29.needs to go anywhere near this. They have got a very good shot. It is

:54:30. > :54:33.just leaving a shoulder. The advantage of the backhand is that

:54:34. > :54:37.you can get into the red ball, dropping down, going past the Red

:54:38. > :54:41.Bull, two or three different options there. -- Red Bull.

:54:42. > :55:01.Stewart is asking for a shop there. You get paid extra. LAUGHTER

:55:02. > :55:05.. No he doesn't. Believe me. He is taking the forehand side, spinning

:55:06. > :55:11.the jack in this direction. That is a good enough call, he will just be

:55:12. > :55:22.staying away from the head. Let Colin do all of the damage. It was a

:55:23. > :55:34.good cover ball, it does not cover the re-spot position. This is hard.

:55:35. > :55:41.That is hard, Ronnie. He is almost done, asking for a bit of yard. Yes,

:55:42. > :55:47.I think he is trying to develop something with the first bowl. He is

:55:48. > :55:53.trying to develop something for your next, almost a two bold type shot

:55:54. > :55:59.here. Building their head up, if he builds up a yard on this, he will

:56:00. > :56:04.never get it back. That was the wrong choice of shot, that was never

:56:05. > :56:15.going to go back. Just holding off all of the time. I don't think that

:56:16. > :56:18.is going to re-spot either. We see Stewart Anderson's foot, looking as

:56:19. > :56:32.if it is the best spot for the ball now. What

:56:33. > :56:41.he is looking at is the re-spot position, varies one there, and one

:56:42. > :56:45.there. If the jack goes, who is going to line the shot? It is

:56:46. > :56:51.difficult to tell but it looks like green on one side and read to the

:56:52. > :57:01.other. I think he has got it covered the other side now. Leaving the head

:57:02. > :57:08.alone, not trying to win the set on this end. Happy to be four up

:57:09. > :57:11.playing the final end. Trying to encourage this one, it looks good.

:57:12. > :57:17.You cannot see the re-spot, that is from six inches. There is a murmur

:57:18. > :57:24.in the crowd but it deserved a digital bit of a clap I think. It is

:57:25. > :57:28.a tough one. They are hard. Well Colin, this is difficult, I think

:57:29. > :57:38.this is almost a draw, I don't see how he could score any other. He is

:57:39. > :57:44.certainly on a different line, this one. He is playing with weight, this

:57:45. > :57:50.is so difficult. He just needs to hold on to get to the jack. He is

:57:51. > :58:03.not going to make it. Just underneath. The draw wasn't

:58:04. > :58:09.far-away. On that little run now of 311, almost guaranteeing the set.

:58:10. > :58:10.Slightly underneath, probably only one inch or two inches on the line

:58:11. > :58:54.would have helped that. Start to work, bend and run, bend

:58:55. > :59:03.and run. It is precisely what you want, from your lead, when you are

:59:04. > :59:10.up. The peril of them are playing well now. A change of tactics from

:59:11. > :59:21.Ronnie and Colin. It is going to be hard to get four. -- the pair of

:59:22. > :59:26.them are playing well now. APPLAUSE That is a super

:59:27. > :59:45.Darren, more or less saying to Stewart, just pack the head, make it

:59:46. > :59:55.difficult. Come on, run, come to Stewart, run-on Stewart, run-on

:59:56. > :00:00.Stewart. , That is very good, changing on the backhand, and the

:00:01. > :00:04.wrong thing about this, you can see through the rings, that they are

:00:05. > :00:11.very close, you just cannot afford to be short with this bowl.

:00:12. > :00:28.Who needs to hurry to get past the green ones. Well, that is almost the

:00:29. > :00:34.four gone. He realises that. It is amazing, you put good bowl down

:00:35. > :00:39.there may ten inches away and one is two inches away and it is just not

:00:40. > :00:46.enough. Especially when you need a four. I suspect Darren will just be

:00:47. > :01:02.reaching through. Any deep hole will be good. -- deep bowl.

:01:03. > :01:18.I think he is happy with this. The Cluxton awkward.

:01:19. > :01:36.He is asking for another one. -- this looks awkward. A little flicker

:01:37. > :01:45.of the lights in the arena. Colin, did that happen before you played?

:01:46. > :01:52.This is really good sportsmanship. What Darren is asking, if that

:01:53. > :02:01.little flicker of light happened during delivery. He is going to ask

:02:02. > :02:03.him to replay the bowl, that is the opposition doing that. APPLAUSE

:02:04. > :02:18.That is tremendous stuff. Normally those sorts of things are

:02:19. > :02:24.the responsibility of the official both the players can take over. That

:02:25. > :02:34.was excellent stuff. Colin was four or five feet away without one. --

:02:35. > :02:44.with that one. Just hope it does not cost him the match! Exactly. He is

:02:45. > :02:53.in the area. Wrong side. That is not going to make any difference.

:02:54. > :03:07.Even in that position, it is interesting when something like that

:03:08. > :03:14.happens under player comes in and wants to get it sorted. The game is

:03:15. > :03:16.more important. Darren has always been a very good sportsman. He plays

:03:17. > :03:35.the game well. He is happy enough to be around the

:03:36. > :03:43.area and beat the other red bowl. This is going to be hit and hope. I

:03:44. > :03:49.think so. As you say, sometimes players just hit the target and you

:03:50. > :03:51.never know, but I just do not see a four. I think: shaking his head,

:03:52. > :04:09.what is the point? A Nice to get onto his own bowl and

:04:10. > :04:16.spit into the two reds and hope the jack moves through and even then the

:04:17. > :04:20.front wing still wins. Of basically impossible. -- the front green still

:04:21. > :04:34.wins. Practice shot. Through the gap. In this sort of happen. No

:04:35. > :05:01.doubt they have been of the better pair.

:05:02. > :05:20.10-7 probably reflect the match. That three was the key end. That put

:05:21. > :05:45.them in a strong position for the first set.

:05:46. > :06:44.Just needs to dip in now. That is handy. Pressure here on Darren. It

:06:45. > :06:45.looks more of a forehand shot that Darren prefers his backhand in this

:06:46. > :06:54.direction. If he draws on the back and then

:06:55. > :07:06.misses the Jackie could get to the back bowl and make second shot.

:07:07. > :07:11.Stick to the hound you prefer. -- if he misses the jack he could get to

:07:12. > :07:19.the back bowl. Strong bias bowl, just needs the weight. Great try. I

:07:20. > :07:23.think he might have made it according to Stewart Anderson. One

:07:24. > :07:49.red. Just needed one more inch. Move the jack, Colin. Although he

:07:50. > :07:55.has taken it away there is still a shot on for Darren and he looks

:07:56. > :07:56.disappointed. Maybe just a little bit too far, bringing the back green

:07:57. > :08:21.one into play. Just a back can draw. He has put the pressure on down. --

:08:22. > :08:28.backhand draw. What an effort. Just did not get down in time. Really

:08:29. > :08:37.good effort. So close to just tucking the jack away. Chance to

:08:38. > :09:03.open 43. -- for a three. It needs to stop. Well. Chance of a

:09:04. > :09:24.spare. I think they will admit it is time for a change. Quite rightly,

:09:25. > :09:35.changing the length of the jack. 27 metres, nothing from 23 metres to 27

:09:36. > :09:40.metres. Definite change needed. I would always expect Stewart and

:09:41. > :09:47.Darren to play full lengths but quite rightly so, Colin, and Ronnie,

:09:48. > :09:57.they realise they need to change. That is a good start. That is

:09:58. > :10:03.exactly what you want. Probably 23 metre jack length. Just over the

:10:04. > :10:28.minimum. As you say, Stewart will correct

:10:29. > :10:43.with the next bit in the meantime Ronnie is there. Two great goals.

:10:44. > :10:48.Trying to get Stewart to hit this. I think that is what Darren is

:10:49. > :10:54.thinking about. Stewart is a good driver. He has skipped for the

:10:55. > :11:01.Scottish international team and he played all the shots. Just a case

:11:02. > :11:16.of, do you widen the target or do you go early? The harder shot. This

:11:17. > :11:25.is not going to be easy. Play the running bowl but try to stay on the

:11:26. > :11:33.green. I am not sure if that has rarely help. In a way that probably

:11:34. > :11:40.makes it harder. Kept the bowl on the ring in the back position. That

:11:41. > :11:46.will cover the T on the restart. Just one bowl target now for Darren,

:11:47. > :11:57.will probably try to draw a second bowl here. Gone down to the re-spot,

:11:58. > :12:02.happy enough to leave the two and let's Darren work away at it. Darren

:12:03. > :12:07.might be tempted to draw this to get a second bowl in. If this covers the

:12:08. > :12:16.race but there is no value in the jack going off the ring. I think it

:12:17. > :12:20.is just a draw, there is room on the backhand side to get a second.

:12:21. > :12:27.Getting shot would probably be difficult. He is trying to draw

:12:28. > :12:33.second. Good tactical battle this. Study. Very close to shot. Very good

:12:34. > :13:19.bowl. Still one Scarlets. -- Colin going for position. That is

:13:20. > :13:27.a good spot. Darren will not do anything other than just draw this

:13:28. > :13:32.because I cannot see this being any worse off but there is always the

:13:33. > :13:38.possibility of the jack locking in somewhere on the Red Bulls if he

:13:39. > :13:47.plays through it. If he attacks this I'm sure they would be more than one

:13:48. > :13:53.down so it is just a draw. Having a chat about it. There is no value in

:13:54. > :14:18.hitting this at all. Suggesting maybe he is going to run

:14:19. > :14:21.out this. If he gets the angle absolutely right he could get the

:14:22. > :14:27.two reds but you are down two millimetres to do that. That went

:14:28. > :14:40.the is playing the runner. Now. I don't believe it. He has got the

:14:41. > :14:49.shot. He definitely was not playing for mass side. -- for that side. It

:14:50. > :14:54.was a great strike. It was the bowl he wanted but how on earth did he

:14:55. > :15:03.get the edge of the jack. He has no idea. Put it down in the area and it

:15:04. > :15:17.just worked out. Colin acknowledges it, he says he did not expect it

:15:18. > :15:23.over there. However, good strike. When you do start to think to

:15:24. > :15:28.yourself, is it going to be my day? The first goal was just an inch away

:15:29. > :15:39.and then he sticks the jack which did not look possible. -- snicks.

:15:40. > :16:14.Back to the favoured 29.5 metres. Well played, Ronnie has certainly

:16:15. > :16:31.picked his game up at the start of this set.

:16:32. > :16:49.Certainly looks better weight. Rock-solid. More bowls staying

:16:50. > :16:57.upright this year than ever before. The question whether that should be,

:16:58. > :17:04.the carpet of its lower. That is usually what is involved. But none

:17:05. > :17:10.of the hand severally got the big swing and did we are used to. But

:17:11. > :17:13.the carpet is playing well. It is playing very well. Some of the

:17:14. > :17:23.bowling has been fantastic. Sometimes it happens when it is a

:17:24. > :17:29.little bit slower. Makes it a more level playing field. Click on the

:17:30. > :18:22.fingers suggesting he is a bit heavy. That is not bad.

:18:23. > :18:30.Just struggling to get back there. Once you go high they just want

:18:31. > :18:34.comeback which is why Darren prefers the backhand. That and they just

:18:35. > :18:50.won't come back. Basically he's giving him choice of

:18:51. > :19:00.shot. I think he might come and have a look. Basically he is saying you

:19:01. > :19:05.can afford to be reaching the head. He is saying if you get into that

:19:06. > :19:16.then the jack will probably go through at least two there which

:19:17. > :19:22.brings in the red bowl. Or he has the draw round the corner. It is

:19:23. > :19:28.down to how Colin feels. Just coming in on the high side. If he falls

:19:29. > :19:35.back he makes the two, if he touches the Jackie makes the two. The basic

:19:36. > :19:43.percentage is probably for the heavier bowl. The draw is maybe too

:19:44. > :19:47.accurate. He would have to hit the green bowl onto the jack and if he

:19:48. > :19:55.hit the inside of it this could go to the re-spot. Through the head,

:19:56. > :20:04.quite right. He is just on the edge for the front green bowl. It just

:20:05. > :20:15.looked at tiny the Thunder. -- it just looked a tiny bit under. You

:20:16. > :20:21.just want to keep this set nice and tight for the first few ends. In the

:20:22. > :20:25.last set there was any one end that was a problem, when they lost the

:20:26. > :20:30.three but other than that it was tight all the way. Both sets have

:20:31. > :20:35.started tight. Darian Stewart have basically got stronger. They will be

:20:36. > :20:48.looking for the same as the set progresses.

:20:49. > :21:18.Just not good enough, ridiculous. Must improve! This is a bit high. He

:21:19. > :21:28.has been playing some very good bowls, forehand. Stewart will be

:21:29. > :21:31.trying to beat his opening delivery. He picks the line perfectly every

:21:32. > :22:45.time. Trying to just fade past the jack if

:22:46. > :22:53.he can. On the high side. It is going to be in the count. That is

:22:54. > :23:06.good. This is not easy again for Colin. He is being asked a lot of

:23:07. > :23:11.questions. This is not easy. I wonder if he could have played on

:23:12. > :23:15.the forehand to try to bounce the jack out. He has played this pretty

:23:16. > :23:24.well. APPLAUSE Wonderful delivery. That was a bit

:23:25. > :23:31.special. Certainly was, Ronnie acknowledging that. Not quite sure

:23:32. > :23:39.who is in line but it is a great bowl stop -- who is lying, but it is

:23:40. > :24:22.a great bowl. Something not right about this one.

:24:23. > :24:28.If you're going to play it it has to be on the forehand. I get the

:24:29. > :24:38.impression the way he plays that it was most likely were lining. I don't

:24:39. > :24:43.think so, if Colin is lying here they will basically leave it alone

:24:44. > :24:48.and take the one. It is so difficult to add another. There is another

:24:49. > :24:56.shot available but goodness me it is risky. The way here's looking at it,

:24:57. > :25:00.the only other shot is coming in there but if he really wanted to

:25:01. > :25:06.take a risk to try to get the jack back into that position to be worth

:25:07. > :25:10.two or three, that is a massively risky shot. I think at this stage of

:25:11. > :25:16.the set I would just keep this tight. One either way. It is

:25:17. > :25:27.favouring reds so I do not think he will be too ambitious with this

:25:28. > :25:31.bowl. Certainly reaching. He has moved the red bowl and think it has

:25:32. > :25:35.probably moved it away. I think it might have cost them the shot. That

:25:36. > :25:47.was the danger of going near the head. I think that has moved the red

:25:48. > :25:55.bowl away a little bit. Taking the debris away. Yes I think he has

:25:56. > :26:07.given it away. That could have been costly. I am with you, I did not

:26:08. > :26:14.think it was really necessary. You can have changed the length, keep

:26:15. > :26:25.the momentum. The jack was more important than anything. I think it

:26:26. > :27:29.was. Just touched it, not by much, but small margins.

:27:30. > :27:46.Swing away and run, very good. The lives of millions if it is falling

:27:47. > :27:52.down. It has gone, that makes a big difference. It has also narrowed the

:27:53. > :28:02.target considerably. It makes it harder once again for Ronnie and

:28:03. > :28:12.Colin. Of just the few small little things have made a difference. In

:28:13. > :28:19.the last end Colin gave it away, very unlucky that bowl falls down.

:28:20. > :28:27.It is not much really, it has just been that rub of the green. Yes. The

:28:28. > :28:34.pressure is on Colin. It gets harder and harder as the game progresses.

:28:35. > :28:43.Darren on his favourite backhand in this direction. It looks close. Very

:28:44. > :28:51.close. Just wants to finish in front. That is good. I think Darren

:28:52. > :28:54.and Stewart are actually manufacturing almost their own luck

:28:55. > :29:01.in this game by playing really, really good bowls. You can see

:29:02. > :29:09.Darren's bowl coming in, finishing six inches short. Once again forcing

:29:10. > :29:16.Colin to play the perfect bowl here. Has been slightly heavy on this

:29:17. > :29:26.side. And another back bowl. I think Darren will go round behind this

:29:27. > :29:35.just in case. Go deep. You are lying very, very well at the moment in the

:29:36. > :29:41.head, two good shots. Certainly no need to make it any bigger. I would

:29:42. > :29:55.agree, David, this will be a yard through the head. This is tough for

:29:56. > :30:05.Colin. Jack high so a bit of an error. He realises that could be an

:30:06. > :30:13.error. Now, Colin, how easy is this to trail the jack four or five feet?

:30:14. > :30:21.That is a really tough shots, to get there and what he into this position

:30:22. > :30:35.and that I thought he was putting his balls

:30:36. > :32:12.even if it if run he misses with then you

:32:13. > :32:39.would expect Stewart It is an easy game if he keeps doing

:32:40. > :33:04.this. If Darren manages to trail the jack,

:33:05. > :33:05.close all in here again, the pressure really building up on

:33:06. > :33:35.Colin. This one dipping back. I do not

:33:36. > :33:44.think he will even attempt to draw this. Go right through that, mate.

:33:45. > :33:57.He is close. He has not got anything on the rink. What was I saying about

:33:58. > :34:07.things going wrong? He was not far-away with the strike. Just go

:34:08. > :34:12.slightly under. Oh dear. The latter, Colin, it was bad enough just to

:34:13. > :34:13.miss the target but to take your own two out leaves you know options

:34:14. > :34:31.whatsoever. Even you would David. It is certainly for, how close it

:34:32. > :34:39.get? Should be encouraging this. He wants this one right up. The thing

:34:40. > :34:47.is you can't destroy the end so he has to to. Simple as that. Any drive

:34:48. > :34:56.that he would have played would have gone off the rink. This would be a

:34:57. > :35:05.miracle recovery. Colonise this would be a good one. --: nose.

:35:06. > :35:40.I always think there is key moments in every game in the second set,

:35:41. > :35:47.that key moments was not touching the red ball enough. And things

:35:48. > :35:51.really have gone wrong since then. They really have and all of a sudden

:35:52. > :35:58.Stewart has gone tide began and made it hard and at the moment 8-2, a

:35:59. > :36:01.great position to be in and they have the draw as well so six or

:36:02. > :36:59.seven up. He wants to clear it. Just dropped

:37:00. > :37:06.off. Leaves Ronnie an opportunity to rest the ball and return the jack.

:37:07. > :37:17.Has a chance here. A reasonable white target, you expect him to get

:37:18. > :37:26.close. Pics a jack up perfect, well played. Colin realise that with a

:37:27. > :37:34.big smile, it was a good ball but he knows it was unlucky. Don't fall

:37:35. > :37:41.over, things are tough enough. Darren Burnett is such a good

:37:42. > :37:48.striker. I would expect him to hit it. It looks in fighting on the back

:37:49. > :37:58.panel. There is only one problem. Because he is six up. You could try

:37:59. > :38:03.to give two shots away that they are hard to beat on the draw and his

:38:04. > :38:08.natural game would be to hit this on the back so I can sit soft this. --

:38:09. > :38:28.of this. I think he has them both. And he's

:38:29. > :38:33.right it as well. Two feet, that will not be easy to beat. That is

:38:34. > :38:39.what Colin was smiling about when Ronnie pulled the jack over, it's

:38:40. > :38:48.just framed the jack. He hit a high percentage does Darren with the

:38:49. > :38:56.running boards, doesn't miss many. Many people have been on the wrong

:38:57. > :39:07.side of that with Darren. Not easy for Karin trying to draw the short

:39:08. > :39:15.ball. --:. Super-short that is. Under a lot of pressure again.

:39:16. > :39:23.Ronnie played to brilliant balls and suddenly one bowl later the pressure

:39:24. > :39:31.was back on. Just a draw here for Darren, one down is not a disaster.

:39:32. > :39:39.Interesting hand signals there, I wonder is he thinking about a

:39:40. > :39:43.running ball after the drive. It'll be hard to make a double. The second

:39:44. > :40:02.bowl was OK here. The line is good enough. Should come

:40:03. > :40:10.out in again, here it comes. Yes it could be. It is on the wider side,

:40:11. > :40:16.the red is straight to the jack and there is that drop-down into the

:40:17. > :40:22.ditch. That is a very good second. He was happy with a good second, not

:40:23. > :40:31.easy for: to add another. You almost feel he has to score to hear --

:40:32. > :40:43.Colin. There are not making any mistakes. They have been solid,

:40:44. > :40:49.really good. Try to miss the green ball the same sort of weight. On the

:40:50. > :40:54.inside would be good. APPLAUSE

:40:55. > :41:12.Just lacking a little bit although Ronnie was calling it. One shot

:41:13. > :41:16.Darren and Walker -- Duncan. The last time we had a real shot end,

:41:17. > :41:18.Ronnie had to on top of the Jackson he will be hoping for the same

:41:19. > :42:20.again. -- Jack so he will. Stewart Anderson waving at the bowl

:42:21. > :42:28.to get it back, he has been so good picking out the line and length with

:42:29. > :42:33.his forehand, the line does change whenever you are short on the jack.

:42:34. > :42:50.In theory it doesn't. The jack should be the same line. Slow down,

:42:51. > :42:58.take your time. Get another close ball.

:42:59. > :43:13.Two loose ones from Stuart. -- Stewart. I think it would add a good

:43:14. > :43:33.shot in here, at some pressure on Darren.

:43:34. > :43:36.Just needs to hurry a little bit to make up for the extra one. There it

:43:37. > :44:09.is. Well that short jack has certainly

:44:10. > :44:18.made a difference. It certainly has, Colin just has to add another one

:44:19. > :44:20.here I feel. I would be looking to add another here, at the pressure on

:44:21. > :44:37.to Darren. -- at. Not a big target really. Yes he is

:44:38. > :44:43.looking to score and thinking if he goes big and covers it Darren will

:44:44. > :44:52.think to himself, even if I hit it I will be one down. I would be trying

:44:53. > :44:57.to put pressure on the opposition. If Darren is four down there is more

:44:58. > :45:16.pressure, I would go to try and live for. -- lie four.. This is number

:45:17. > :45:29.four. Well done. Gently gently, don't bring it out. That is very

:45:30. > :45:33.very good. Just settled in in time, that is fine, the front bowl still

:45:34. > :45:42.covers it and I don't think there are any options to go with a single

:45:43. > :45:46.bold targets. We will have to see it here.

:45:47. > :45:55.At best he might get third. If he does get in and there is a chance to

:45:56. > :46:01.take a couple away, there is always the chance to get the jack out that

:46:02. > :46:06.side. It doesn't matter which way he wants to play it to be truthful with

:46:07. > :46:11.you but he can still draw it in their hope to get the second shot.

:46:12. > :46:16.The forehand is still available. It won't make any difference except now

:46:17. > :46:24.the jack is going all the way back into this position. That brings the

:46:25. > :46:27.other two bowls into play. You start looking at a green ball here, yes

:46:28. > :46:33.that is what they are looking at. The key bowls. They are the two

:46:34. > :46:42.green ones but he has to make the contact. You almost feel if he hits

:46:43. > :46:43.this he has won this. Depends if the ball goes with it of course because

:46:44. > :47:04.it is a touch. Drop. That was a perfect results. If

:47:05. > :47:10.he had got a solid the bowl would have gone with the jack but he got

:47:11. > :47:16.the edge and the red bowl did not go anywhere. I thought he was on the

:47:17. > :47:28.high side and would rob the green. Catches the red perfect. That is a

:47:29. > :47:33.matchwinner. Absolutely. That is the sort of bold you go down with the

:47:34. > :47:41.microphone and say you'll hit a fraction. Eight times out of ten the

:47:42. > :47:46.front bowl would have gone through. Just got that absolutely perfect, he

:47:47. > :47:54.has been grated a Darren Burnett. -- great today. He certainly will be

:47:55. > :47:55.hard to beat in the other competitions if he keeps the

:47:56. > :48:41.standard going. One shot here and it is all over.

:48:42. > :48:54.That is a pretty good front one. Even harder now for Colin and

:48:55. > :49:06.Ronnie. Swing for home. That's OK. The cover bowl is going in. The two

:49:07. > :49:18.guys know that even happy enough to lose this. Good effort, just

:49:19. > :49:26.dropping off although it sets up a plan to move the green ball. The

:49:27. > :49:30.last time was cruel in some ways, line four shots and then lose a

:49:31. > :49:37.double, going for a potential 8-7 to then losing the match. That is

:49:38. > :49:43.what's happened, no doubt that is a matchwinner. His confidence is so

:49:44. > :49:49.high here. I don't know if he wants to go anywhere near it, he would

:49:50. > :50:02.like to lock it in probably. He needs another one in here.

:50:03. > :50:20.Good bowl. The forehand... An important running ball for Colin.

:50:21. > :50:28.Once again nothing but perfection from Colin. He gets in, will take

:50:29. > :50:36.one away. Their jack has moved and that will not help. They will almost

:50:37. > :50:42.be certainly shaking hands. He is shaking his head, he has realised

:50:43. > :50:46.the pressure has built and built. Very little has gone right and

:50:47. > :50:49.everything has gone for the guys. Having said that they make their own

:50:50. > :50:54.luck in many ways and every single bowl down there has been close to

:50:55. > :51:01.the target. I agree. They have played a perfect pairs game. Colin

:51:02. > :51:12.has bowled well and Darren has backed it up.

:51:13. > :51:39.That is a championship lie. He has to drive the jack. Go for the jack

:51:40. > :51:42.Moates. Quite right. Not easy once again.

:51:43. > :51:56.He is in the area. Now where is that going. He could actually get a shot

:51:57. > :52:07.out of this. He's actually got two out of that. Unbelievable. Time he

:52:08. > :52:18.got a little break and he got at that time. Bang on target. We don't

:52:19. > :52:27.see that happen too often. That was a great strike. A good bit of

:52:28. > :53:18.fortune to follow. Here is a drive. Bang on the target.

:53:19. > :53:38.Easy now. Easy now. Good enough. Realistically three shots needed.

:53:39. > :53:53.That is the only way they can extend it, they would love to do that. Five

:53:54. > :53:54.down as you say, they need a two. A three to have any sort of realistic

:53:55. > :54:10.chance in this match. Having scored a three in this match

:54:11. > :54:17.so far, he lost a couple. A loose end from Stuart. -- Stewart. I

:54:18. > :54:46.expect: to draw the winner here. Well played Colin. The boys watching

:54:47. > :54:53.back at the sawmill, I'm sure they are very busy, I'm sure there will

:54:54. > :54:58.be a television on in the background. He will be looking to

:54:59. > :55:10.get back for a rest. It has been hard work this afternoon it really

:55:11. > :55:23.has. That is a good ball it's really is. If he doesn't get back to the

:55:24. > :55:32.jack then it is all over, they will be shaking hands. This looks a

:55:33. > :55:37.little bit to me. That looks to be over.

:55:38. > :55:43.APPLAUSE It looks like a very tight game all

:55:44. > :55:48.the way until the three shot in the first seven, that was the break the

:55:49. > :55:52.boys needed, Stuart Anderson and Darren Burnett, they have one the

:55:53. > :55:58.first set but they were looking very strong as they took it 10-6. Without

:55:59. > :56:04.a doubt the best pair on the day. Both players gave excellent

:56:05. > :56:12.displays. A great display of pairs play. They created luck by playing

:56:13. > :56:16.really good bowls. This is how it happened. You can see the two boys

:56:17. > :56:26.coming out and having a laugh with the guys as well. You can see Colin

:56:27. > :56:35.Walker just dropping inside again. He was under pressure there, last

:56:36. > :56:39.bowl to say. Darren Burnett a little turn on the jack and that made the

:56:40. > :56:43.three he needed. The massive difference in the first set. Colin

:56:44. > :56:51.Walker was desperately unlucky in this. That was the fourth and second

:56:52. > :56:58.set when he gave the shot away. Two bowls out, absolutely nothing to

:56:59. > :57:03.play and barren burn-out, four against and a little edge on them

:57:04. > :57:12.all. Took a double and more less secured the win. Great reform and

:57:13. > :57:27.is, they are the world pairs indoor champions and deservedly so. The

:57:28. > :57:34.Chat show the favourites. The total shot scored, 20-13, the average

:57:35. > :57:37.length is where Darren Burnett and Stewart Anderson won the match. They

:57:38. > :57:48.fully deserved to be the pairs champion for 2016. And here I am

:57:49. > :57:52.with the pairs championship. He'd been to this final before, how good

:57:53. > :57:57.is it to get over the line? Darren was superb and again, I must give a

:57:58. > :58:02.big thank you to: because I don't think the score reflected the game.

:58:03. > :58:08.I thoroughly enjoyed the match and I'm glad we won the pairs together.

:58:09. > :58:12.The first set in particular as Stewart said, your opponents were

:58:13. > :58:18.tough to overcome, when you got on top of them did you feel that you

:58:19. > :58:23.are on your way to the title? Not at all, they are fantastic players and

:58:24. > :58:27.we had to dig deep and it was a really tight match Stewart says.

:58:28. > :58:31.Scoreline did not reflect the game. One of the Times could have made it

:58:32. > :58:35.a different game. Some key moments but one in particular, 8-10 towards

:58:36. > :58:40.the end and you produce an outstanding drive. We didn't have a

:58:41. > :58:50.lot song to be honest so I had to hit the target. I expected to still

:58:51. > :58:54.lose. Those moments key. Stewart you have won the individual title here

:58:55. > :59:01.as has Darren, is it impossible to compare the two? Not really. To lift

:59:02. > :59:09.any world title is a great achievement. The run of success, the

:59:10. > :59:13.Commonwealth Games, the championship, what does this mean

:59:14. > :59:21.the? Is means a lot, as Stewart says it is all was good to get any title.

:59:22. > :59:25.It is a dream come true. Commiserations to Colin and runny

:59:26. > :59:30.but ladies and gentlemen your champions in the pairs 2016

:59:31. > :59:44.championship Darren Anderson and is due up the debt. -- Stuart Burnett.

:59:45. > :59:49.Now it is time for the presentations. Europe pre-season but

:59:50. > :59:55.the presentation party. The Chief Executive Officer and tournament

:59:56. > :59:56.director, Mr Richard Madison along with the director for strategic

:59:57. > :00:13.projects, Mr Peter Beverley. And 1st to receive the runners-up

:00:14. > :00:18.cheque, they played magnificently throughout the tournament. Your

:00:19. > :00:23.appreciation pleas for Ronnie Duncan and Colin Walker!

:00:24. > :00:43.APPLAUSE CHEERING

:00:44. > :00:52.But now to the winners and to receive a glass goblet each, a

:00:53. > :00:55.cheque and the title for the 2016 world indoor pairs champions...

:00:56. > :01:21.Darren Burnett and Stuart Anderson! APPLAUSE

:01:22. > :01:27.Howl about that, ladies and gentlemen? 1 more time, the 2016

:01:28. > :01:30.world indoor pairs champions, Darren Burnett and Stuart Anderson.

:01:31. > :01:56.APPLAUSE Fantastic performance from both of

:01:57. > :02:00.you. Both players still involved in the singles competition and that is

:02:01. > :02:06.what we will focus on now on BBC Two this afternoon. Let's look at how

:02:07. > :02:11.the draw is shaping up so far. Alex Marshall will play Gary Kelly, that

:02:12. > :02:15.is up next. Mark Dawes will take on Jimmy Smith. Stewart Anderson

:02:16. > :02:20.already through as is the other former champion Mervyn King. Andy

:02:21. > :02:27.Thomson knocked out, Jamie Chesney defeating Jason Greenslade. The

:02:28. > :02:34.biggest shock perhaps of the tournament so far... The defeat of

:02:35. > :02:41.four time champion Paul Foster. Simon Skelton, Jonathan Ross, David

:02:42. > :02:47.Gourlay, Darren Burnett and Greg Harlow amongst those through to the

:02:48. > :02:51.last 16. Mickey Brett still to play. We will focus on the match between

:02:52. > :02:56.Alex Marshall and Gary Kelly. 1st of all, let's talk about Alex Marshall,

:02:57. > :03:01.had the most decorated player in the game. Now 48 years old, seeded

:03:02. > :03:06.number 1 in this tournament and he has won the title 6 times, going for

:03:07. > :03:13.an amazing 7th title. Quite simply the man to beat. To be fair to him,

:03:14. > :03:21.he is happy to be back on familiar territory. Alex, here we are in

:03:22. > :03:26.January once again. It must be a place that you look forward to

:03:27. > :03:32.coming to? Yes, it's a place I love to play bowls. Purely because I have

:03:33. > :03:37.been very successful. The majority of my titles have been 1 here, I

:03:38. > :03:43.like the surroundings, the carpet. Yes, I use this as my 2nd home. You

:03:44. > :03:50.won your 1st title, the world title in 1999, you 1st started coming

:03:51. > :03:54.here... 2016, today, what is the difference between arriving here now

:03:55. > :04:00.and then? To be honest, I think it's the same. I do the same homework, I

:04:01. > :04:05.do the same preparation, everything is always the same. It is something

:04:06. > :04:09.I don't want to change because I had been so successful. I have my own

:04:10. > :04:14.little rituals that I do, nobody knows. As soon as I walk in, I do

:04:15. > :04:19.the same things all the time may yes, just happy to be back. When you

:04:20. > :04:24.won your 1st world title did you ever have any ambition to win a

:04:25. > :04:30.certain number? Yes, I did. Obviously, I used to say David

:04:31. > :04:34.Bryant and all of these guys on the television and I said I would love

:04:35. > :04:38.to perform in that event. It is hard to qualify, you have to go through

:04:39. > :04:43.the qualifiers and they did, managed to win them and I got the

:04:44. > :04:47.opportunity to come here and win the World Championships in 1999. I had 2

:04:48. > :04:55.chances before that in Preston, I was a bit unlucky. But yes,

:04:56. > :05:00.obviously, I would love to win it once, but would be a dream country

:05:01. > :05:04.but winning it 6 times... You could never, ever dream of something like

:05:05. > :05:10.that, especially with the players involved, so many class players. To

:05:11. > :05:13.win it 6 times is just amazing. When you play against all of these class

:05:14. > :05:20.players, every single game you play is hard but I am always focused, I

:05:21. > :05:24.don't get nervous. Before the game, I am nervous, everyone is but when I

:05:25. > :05:28.get on the green, I settled down and I don't put pressure on myself. I am

:05:29. > :05:34.like everyone else, I want to win and I am going to take it a game at

:05:35. > :05:41.a time. We talk about 7 titles... It is something I would love to do. The

:05:42. > :05:48.more you get, the better it is. But, yes, it would be a dream come true

:05:49. > :05:52.to win it for the 7th time. And the man who is tasked with trying to

:05:53. > :05:57.defeat Alex Marshall in this 1st round is Gary Kelly. Let's find out

:05:58. > :06:01.more about the 26 -year-old from county Antrim in Northern Ireland.

:06:02. > :06:05.He has played in this event a couple of times before but the last of his

:06:06. > :06:10.5 appearances was 5 years ago, got to the 2nd round in 2008 and is also

:06:11. > :06:15.the winner of a bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi back in

:06:16. > :06:26.2010. Standing in his way today is the little matter of Alex Marshall!

:06:27. > :06:32.It is always going to be a difficult challenge for me. Alex Marshall is 1

:06:33. > :06:37.of the most respected and successful players in the game. But at the end

:06:38. > :06:41.of the day as the qualifier UART guaranteed to play a seed, there

:06:42. > :06:45.will never be an easy job but unfortunately I have true Alex

:06:46. > :06:49.Marshall, the 6 times champion, defending champion and I am the King

:06:50. > :06:53.for 2. The 1st 2 balls are important, but Alex under pressure,

:06:54. > :07:01.force him into shots, that is the key. -- looking forward to it. I

:07:02. > :07:07.unfortunately gain the experience, hopefully I can use that to my

:07:08. > :07:13.advantage. As you say, my 4th time here, again, more experience, I have

:07:14. > :07:20.played in more major offence so hopefully, I can produce a good

:07:21. > :07:26.performance. So, Alex Marshall at about to set off on his quest to win

:07:27. > :07:33.an amazing 7th title. We can rejoin the commentary team, Greg Harlow

:07:34. > :07:37.joins David Cork. COMMENTATOR: Gary Kelly arrived last

:07:38. > :07:43.night from the arrows Championships. A man in great form, a big ask.

:07:44. > :07:48.Absolutely. I played him a couple of times, great player, probably Alex

:07:49. > :07:55.Marshall is the 1 you want to avoid in the 1st round. Absolutely, no

:07:56. > :07:59.doubt. Gary Kelly, really, to 3 days beforehand, still a hard game for

:08:00. > :08:04.him and yet, last night, has he got the hours put in? I think you would

:08:05. > :08:08.say the odds are stacked against him but he is an experienced player and

:08:09. > :08:13.he could pull out a shock, you never know. A big driver and I think you

:08:14. > :08:17.will get plenty of practice. He is, because I think Alex is in top form.

:08:18. > :08:22.It will be interesting to see how things go, 1 of those matters, you

:08:23. > :08:28.say to yourself, what will happen? Well Alex Marshall put the Bulls in

:08:29. > :08:36.end after end, Gary Kelly trying to get out of trouble, but the thing is

:08:37. > :08:40.the re- spot. The thing is, if you are a big driver, you need to hit

:08:41. > :08:44.everyone because as soon as you miss, the opposition covers the

:08:45. > :08:49.spot. If he gets into his driving game, he cannot afford to miss.

:08:50. > :08:54.Already in great form. Chances for number 7? I think that there's a

:08:55. > :08:59.long way off, he has got to win 5 games but he would be 1 of the

:09:00. > :09:04.favourites. You look at someone like Gary Kelly who hasn't been here for

:09:05. > :09:08.5 or 6 years, it will be tough but we have had some surprises. 1 or 2

:09:09. > :09:13.big shocks already in the tournament. In that respect,

:09:14. > :09:17.probably the pressure will be off Gary and he might even play as if

:09:18. > :09:21.this is his final and sometimes, it can work in the favour of the

:09:22. > :09:28.underdog. It will be an interesting match, looking forward to it. From

:09:29. > :09:33.our point of view, sitting up here, and from your point of view, it is

:09:34. > :09:40.going to be scary having home, and playing against the top guys. It is

:09:41. > :09:43.almost better playing the likes of Paul Foster? When you are playing

:09:44. > :09:48.Alex Marshall, Paul Foster, you know exactly what to expect. You play the

:09:49. > :09:52.qualifiers, they can play some very different shots and on the day, they

:09:53. > :09:56.are good enough to pull them off under can cause upsets, as we have

:09:57. > :10:00.seen. This rink is slightly different because it's a little bit

:10:01. > :10:03.and it's just a little bit flatter and I think that is really helping

:10:04. > :10:08.some of the qualifiers coming through. I think it is, a little bit

:10:09. > :10:12.and the memory banks for all of the seeded players is how the rink has

:10:13. > :10:18.played over the years and now it play slightly different and you have

:10:19. > :10:23.to concentrate 100% because if you give it the line you used to, it can

:10:24. > :10:29.make it 4. Thank you. Now we join Ritchie in the arena.

:10:30. > :10:33.The player is bidding for a spot in the last 16, Alex Marshall taking on

:10:34. > :10:39.Gary Kelly, that is up next. Let's say hello to Richard. Thank you, I

:10:40. > :10:44.1st player has 16 national titles to his credit, he is no slouch on the

:10:45. > :10:44.green. A former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, ladies and

:10:45. > :11:12.gentlemen, Gary Kelly! And now to another finalist in the

:11:13. > :11:16.international circuit, the defending world indoor singles champion, Alex

:11:17. > :11:41.Marshall, MBE. Once more, let's head back to the

:11:42. > :11:52.commentary team, Greg Harlow joins David Corkill. Alex Marshall coming

:11:53. > :11:54.out to Can You Feel The Force. He says this is his favourite green. He

:11:55. > :12:16.is looking very comfortable. This will be the last time for

:12:17. > :12:25.Sandra McLeish to be here, she retires after this season. She is 1

:12:26. > :12:30.of the balls to officials team. She will be greatly missed. I don't know

:12:31. > :12:33.how many years she has done but it seems like she has been here as long

:12:34. > :12:40.as most of the rest of us and what a fantastic job she has done over the

:12:41. > :12:44.years. Sandra is a much trusted by the players and I think when you

:12:45. > :12:50.have the trust and respect of the players you know you are doing the

:12:51. > :12:52.job extremely well. In terms of her bowling career, an international

:12:53. > :12:57.player, in her own right, very accomplished.

:12:58. > :13:06.Gary Kelly... Prolific winner of the under 25 titles but I know Gary very

:13:07. > :13:18.well. My skipping the international team. You must be over 25? Only

:13:19. > :13:21.just, 26. I could not believe it. I was looking at him and I thought...

:13:22. > :13:34.26? It is ridiculous! Not much more you can say about Alex

:13:35. > :13:48.Marshall, he has done it all. His sights are firmly fixed on the

:13:49. > :13:56.singles now. APPLAUSE

:13:57. > :14:05.The mixed pairs, of course... But just that tempting 7th world title.

:14:06. > :14:08.As you say, Greg, a long way to go. A lot of things can happen and a lot

:14:09. > :14:14.of good players are out there like yourself and others who can win the

:14:15. > :14:18.singles. I think all the players will say the same, it is literally 1

:14:19. > :14:22.game at a time, I know that sounds boring and like a cliche but that is

:14:23. > :14:27.what the players do, 1 game at a time and they progress through the

:14:28. > :14:30.tournament. That is the case, that is why there are an awful lot of

:14:31. > :14:35.cancelled flights and various other things with players. They only look

:14:36. > :14:48.at the next game. Can Alex hold his line? He is just a bit under.

:14:49. > :14:57.Alex has moved from the traditional that he worked for, the company, the

:14:58. > :15:06.distribution and he has moved to Errol balls, working for them, using

:15:07. > :15:10.their bowls. He certainly puts in the hours, the practice, with the

:15:11. > :15:18.new bowls and he knows exactly what they can do. Disappointed with the

:15:19. > :15:24.last 1. Yes, not the best of opening ends from Gary and I would be very

:15:25. > :15:25.surprised if Alex does not rob a 2nd in here. A good start to the game

:15:26. > :15:45.for him. Plenty of room. Yes, I was just wondering when we

:15:46. > :15:51.were doing the introduction, if Barry was on the rink, we did not

:15:52. > :16:02.know if he had even arrived. But he arrived last night! A midnight

:16:03. > :16:06.feast. -- is Gary. And an hour's practice. It is tough to come here

:16:07. > :16:11.and expect to do a little bit of practice and take on Alex Marshall.

:16:12. > :16:18.Yes, I think most of the players like to get here 2 or 3 days early

:16:19. > :16:23.and put in a fuse sessions on the rink. Unfortunately, Gary did not

:16:24. > :16:30.arrive until last night. Literally, he has to learn as he plays. He was

:16:31. > :16:31.committed to playing in the Irish finals and the only finished

:16:32. > :16:38.yesterday. I think he was on the last flight to

:16:39. > :17:04.Stansted! Alex starting off, this direction,

:17:05. > :17:04.the backhand, the hand that most people have been playing.

:17:05. > :17:28.APPLAUSE Very talented player, Gary Kelly, he

:17:29. > :17:33.really is. He can draw and he can drive, play all the shots. He builds

:17:34. > :17:39.up his experience. To know exactly when to play them. And there are

:17:40. > :17:44.very few people at his age with the experience that he has. Alex knows

:17:45. > :17:52.that potentially it could be a tough game if he is not in top form. Alex

:17:53. > :17:58.was not happy with that. He knew he was not there. But that is good. It

:17:59. > :18:05.is. You are not ever happy with playing a bad bowl. The worrying

:18:06. > :18:14.sign is when you think it is right and robs short, then you are in

:18:15. > :18:18.trouble. -- and drops short. Trying again. Just not there. Needed

:18:19. > :18:53.another foot. A good opportunity for Gary to slide

:18:54. > :19:07.another 1 in. Put a little bit of early pressure on Alex.

:19:08. > :19:22.A bit of work to do to get this 1 back. Here it comes. Good, steady,

:19:23. > :19:31.swinging bowl, very popular in the portable rink.

:19:32. > :19:43.I think practically all the players use this, Jason has experimented

:19:44. > :19:49.with others but even Jason uses the tiger. Alex is very close, needs a

:19:50. > :20:07.drop to win the shot. Not quite, I think. It looked better than that.

:20:08. > :20:15.Definitely a narrow line from Gary. Waving it in. I think it is more the

:20:16. > :20:29.weight than anything else. 1 shot, Gary Kelly!

:20:30. > :20:31.APPLAUSE Definitely on a narrower line than

:20:32. > :20:42.his other bowls. Some of the crowd just filtering in

:20:43. > :20:49.after the exciting final and the pairs.

:20:50. > :20:55.They certainly don't want to miss this match, Alex Marshall always

:20:56. > :21:02.brings in a crowd, playing against a young qualifier, adds a little bit

:21:03. > :21:11.of spice to it. Jack length, 28 1/2 metres. Gary Kelly was playing in

:21:12. > :21:18.Cyprus, as was Alex. He came back with a couple of medals from there.

:21:19. > :21:27.As did Alex, indeed, came back with a couple of silver medals. But he

:21:28. > :21:29.really cannot afford to do that! He knew out of the hand that it was not

:21:30. > :21:43.right. APPLAUSE

:21:44. > :22:10.Perfect. A good correction. Had to start

:22:11. > :22:54.thinking about the other side. I think the only option for Gary is

:22:55. > :23:05.the weight, both look locked on the draw. A very fast driver...

:23:06. > :23:15.Sticking to the draw. I think I am with you, Greg, played to the re-

:23:16. > :23:20.spot, hit that 1. I cannot see a lot of value in the shot he has just

:23:21. > :23:24.laid, to be honest. If he had played out on the other side, I would have

:23:25. > :23:40.understood it. It will be difficult now. Just 1 down at the moment.

:23:41. > :23:51.That is to now. That might change things. I think he will hit this

:23:52. > :23:58.now. Yes, probably looking to get into the split to get the best

:23:59. > :24:02.result. Depends how much... It is his own bowl that is the problem,

:24:03. > :24:08.will he get his own and flickered off? Very controlled weight, then he

:24:09. > :24:14.goes out there, it will struggle but it is coming back. I think that has

:24:15. > :24:20.gone the wrong side. Yes, he wanted it to go the other side. It would

:24:21. > :24:22.have been good. As it is, he will be 1 down and I am sure Alex will draw

:24:23. > :24:40.another. That is a good shot. Under pressure

:24:41. > :24:54.to play it with that sort of weight, not an easy shot. Drive quicker.

:24:55. > :25:32.The set score is bowl-macro-1 after 3 ends. -- four.

:25:33. > :25:44.Jack length, 29 1/2 metres. Both players opting for the long length,

:25:45. > :26:00.virtually full-length jacks. Well, that starts to go wrong in any

:26:01. > :26:04.way for Alex, he will move back. APPLAUSE

:26:05. > :26:26.When you are playing as well as this, you don't need to.

:26:27. > :26:54.He is looking down on a similar sort of line again, similar weight? That

:26:55. > :27:18.is good. APPLAUSE

:27:19. > :27:32.Slide over correction. Not much. -- a slight. Just the wrong side of the

:27:33. > :27:36.bowl. Alex will not eat going into this match with a game plan but he

:27:37. > :27:41.will be hoping to restrict Gary 2 singles and pick him up on multiples

:27:42. > :27:43.because he has had so much extra time on the rink. He should have the

:27:44. > :28:06.consistency to do just that. Did not look too sure about this 1.

:28:07. > :28:10.It looks good enough but I am starting to wonder if he has pushed

:28:11. > :28:17.it, dropping short. Badly dropping short.

:28:18. > :28:26.Alex Ross another 1. Gary is going to be in a heap of problems with

:28:27. > :28:32.this last bowl. This is what I feared for him. If he had the odd

:28:33. > :28:42.loose end he will lose heavily on the shot count. It is as much to do

:28:43. > :28:47.with not having the opportunity to actually get here and practice.

:28:48. > :28:50.Whenever they scheduled the Irish championships in the middle of the

:28:51. > :28:56.World Championships, it does not really help!

:28:57. > :29:06.I think Gary has decided not to visit the head at all. He has not

:29:07. > :29:18.visited it once this match. He is struggling. Yes, short, a very loose

:29:19. > :29:30.3. 3 shots, Alex Marshall! APPLAUSE

:29:31. > :29:34.Set score, 7- 1 after four ends. Gary has a big drive shot and if he

:29:35. > :29:38.keeps dropping short he will not be able to use that so he needs to make

:29:39. > :29:45.sure he is at least up to the jack length. To give himself the

:29:46. > :29:54.opportunity to drive at Alex's bowls and shake the game up a little bit.

:29:55. > :30:01.The jack, just hanging on. Jack length, 29 1/2 metres. That is what

:30:02. > :30:05.you call a maximum. Even the best in the world, when it comes to the jack

:30:06. > :30:10.rolling, can get it wrong. Scooting over the top of the green, the guys

:30:11. > :30:16.are saying, for some reason. Seems to be flying over the top a little

:30:17. > :30:20.bit. I think because the pace of the green is quite slow, the jack seems

:30:21. > :30:23.to go at its normal rate, you expected to be slow but it isn't. It

:30:24. > :30:32.seems to glide on a fraction. Right, Gary, need a better opening

:30:33. > :30:56.bowl. Looking for a little touch on the

:30:57. > :31:35.jack. Hiding away. Very good. Close, got a chance with it. Great

:31:36. > :31:46.bowl. Well done. APPLAUSE

:31:47. > :31:52.2.5 inches. Gary Kelly is a confidence player, when he gets in

:31:53. > :31:58.the groove, he is difficult to put down. It is just whether he is going

:31:59. > :32:18.to have the time to do that against somebody of Alex Marshall's stature.

:32:19. > :32:27.Needs another one in now. If not, I think Alex will be looking for the

:32:28. > :32:34.takeout. Is it going to stop? He is certainly trying with this. Just

:32:35. > :32:39.move sit around a little bit. There is a shot on their fat Alex if he

:32:40. > :32:45.wants to play at, bowl on to bowl, it will take the green one out clean

:32:46. > :32:50.as a whistle. I can't see the danger in it, he has three balls around,

:32:51. > :33:03.even if he still takes seconds. It looks to me like he is just

:33:04. > :33:20.trying to draw it. Clear the front one, that is the

:33:21. > :33:25.first issue. He was probably two feet short of the target he was

:33:26. > :33:31.after, that was all. If the score was 2-2 he would have played the

:33:32. > :33:35.shot 7-1 up. Thinking, if I only dropped one I am still in a

:33:36. > :33:41.commanding position in this set. The set is still looking good for him.

:33:42. > :34:17.One shot, Gary Kelly. I expect Gary to shorten the jack length.

:34:18. > :34:36.This is Gary's favourite place to play, it is an excellent place,

:34:37. > :34:43.fast. We have pretty much all played their many times, a wonderful

:34:44. > :34:47.drawing green. That is what Gary likes, the fast greens. Certainly he

:34:48. > :34:48.will be in the frame for the world championships in Christchurch later

:34:49. > :35:23.this year. That is a struggle on the over

:35:24. > :35:34.correction. If you are going to have any chance

:35:35. > :35:40.against Alex Marshall, you need to get those first two balls in. --

:35:41. > :35:46.bowls. Good correction here from Alex. On

:35:47. > :36:07.top. Brilliant. Gary in full concentration, he

:36:08. > :36:15.really needs a good bowl here. The lie is not bad.

:36:16. > :36:19.Struggling for weak. That is the problem now, he is going to be in

:36:20. > :36:35.trouble on the next one -- weight. Well, a vital bowl here. Looks the

:36:36. > :37:05.best of his four. Is it going to be good enough, is it

:37:06. > :37:17.going to run? Just going to give up, I think. A good try.

:37:18. > :37:24.A couple of options here for Alex. He could obviously just draw another

:37:25. > :37:29.shot, or play up to give it a notch, a couple of opportunities, just

:37:30. > :37:34.nudge the green out, I think he will probably just draw. He has opted for

:37:35. > :37:38.the four had, he isn't messing about with a backhand in case it drops in

:37:39. > :37:47.-- forehand. He is just looking to rattle off the

:37:48. > :37:50.ends and school singles, he would be very happy to do that. -- school

:37:51. > :38:50.singles. APPLAUSE

:38:51. > :38:56.Once again, a nice one for his favourite jack length.

:38:57. > :39:08.Gary is going to have to try and extend this set as long as humanly

:39:09. > :39:11.possible, trying to play his way into this match. He is already

:39:12. > :39:14.playing his practice time in the match, that is never a good idea,

:39:15. > :39:37.unfortunately he has been forced into that.

:39:38. > :40:01.It looks a better line in this time for Gary. Going past, the winner,

:40:02. > :40:08.well played. APPLAUSE

:40:09. > :40:16.Eight inches. The crowd may not know Gary very well, but we as players

:40:17. > :40:24.do. We know what he's capable of. And so does Alex Marshall. Alex will

:40:25. > :40:30.want to keep the pressure on, trying to beat every time, trying to beat

:40:31. > :40:56.it with the first ball. This is a chance for Gary to get a double.

:40:57. > :41:01.He wants the double now. That's more like it. He will be tempted with

:41:02. > :41:15.this. Yes, I think so. There is a shot for Alex, if he

:41:16. > :41:21.really wants to play it he will go into, you know, if he gets into that

:41:22. > :41:26.there is a chance of the two bowls going, and that one will go there.

:41:27. > :41:32.But if he gets the outside one, the red bowl will actually go up the

:41:33. > :41:39.green. That might lock in. But two against, he is drawing well. Yes,

:41:40. > :41:43.the thing is that the draws this time were blocked. I think he might

:41:44. > :41:53.be tempted with the running throw. -- bowl. 8-2 up, I think we will see

:41:54. > :41:55.a running bowl here. Got the best back as well as there is any jack

:41:56. > :42:10.movement. Looking for his own red bowl onto

:42:11. > :42:16.the Greens, can he hold? It shows you how difficult that running bowl

:42:17. > :42:18.is on the forehand. Just it bowl tight, this is a good chance for

:42:19. > :42:39.Gary. It will be a whole lot better. Down on an excellent line. It has to

:42:40. > :42:46.be up to give its chance, it must be reaching. Two shots, Gary Kelly.

:42:47. > :42:48.APPLAUSE Alex Marshall will be relieved

:42:49. > :42:58.enough just to lose the double. Thinking to himself now, just one

:42:59. > :43:03.more shot and that will close out the set. As hard as that is, those

:43:04. > :43:08.little extra shot there, when you are playing somebody like Alex you

:43:09. > :43:16.must take advantage. It is easy to get that in, you're looking for a

:43:17. > :43:23.two and one to get something else in. Two doubles to tie the set, a

:43:24. > :43:29.hard task. Gary didn't really want that jack up at 29 metres. I reckon

:43:30. > :43:33.it probably was a couple of metres short of the mat. -- shorter than

:43:34. > :43:50.that. Not getting his first bowl up here.

:43:51. > :43:54.Not putting any pressure on with the first delivery. If you are not doing

:43:55. > :44:11.that, you are going to be in a cube of trouble. -- heap of trouble.

:44:12. > :44:32.Alex is getting a free run here on the first delivery.

:44:33. > :45:12.Well, it is in. But definitely beatable. Gary moving onto the

:45:13. > :45:19.forehand. Ten inches, just over a foot. If you rests the last ball he

:45:20. > :45:23.will get the shot, but it is moving on the forehand. A little bonus on

:45:24. > :45:31.the forehand if you get a touch on the jack. Two shots. Four against on

:45:32. > :45:35.the scoreboard, probably thinks he needs at least a two dissent. He has

:45:36. > :45:39.got a chance with this. It touches, it makes a double -- two on this

:45:40. > :46:16.end. He did really well. What a reply. Oh, this is massive.

:46:17. > :46:20.What a reply. I thought he was drawing the shot. But a good second,

:46:21. > :46:22.he won't be very happy with that. He certainly will be more than happy in

:46:23. > :46:37.the last end. Three shots up. A lot of concentration there with

:46:38. > :46:41.Gary, you can see his eyes moving to the Lyme of where he wants to put

:46:42. > :46:45.the ball. Just not reaching with this one. A little bit of both, as

:46:46. > :46:48.they say. I'm sure Alex will be looking just to draw. -- eyes moving

:46:49. > :47:25.to the life. -- Main. One shot, Gary Kelly.

:47:26. > :47:39.APPLAUSE At the moment, he is just doing

:47:40. > :47:44.enough really, just about consistent enough and getting close enough to

:47:45. > :47:45.have that gap. He is certainly looking strong enough to win the

:47:46. > :47:52.first set. But he might looking strong enough to win the

:47:53. > :47:56.up a gear in the second set. Yes, I think both players will be looking

:47:57. > :48:01.at, obviously Gary knows he has to up his game to win the second set.

:48:02. > :48:07.But I think he will also want to up it and try and finish the game as

:48:08. > :48:14.early as he possibly can. So, Gary is just starting to come into the

:48:15. > :48:19.match, starting to get his drawing pace that little bit nearer, the

:48:20. > :48:24.first bowl is crucial, he has not been there with his first bowl and

:48:25. > :48:28.he needs to get that one up. He is close this time, but it is not where

:48:29. > :48:32.he needs it, he needs two feet on that. He is a very experienced

:48:33. > :48:37.singles player, he knows that that first bowl is crucial. Especially

:48:38. > :48:44.when you are looking to score big on the last end. Alex drops just

:48:45. > :48:46.anywhere between that and the jack, and it is virtually impossible

:48:47. > :49:21.already to score a big count. Very good.

:49:22. > :49:34.Juan Burnett bowl in from Alex and that is pretty much set over.

:49:35. > :49:49.Perfect line -- one good bowl. As a player, you would be looking at

:49:50. > :49:53.this now, thinking, how can I make three? Sitting here, I'm struggling

:49:54. > :49:58.to think how he can score three shots. The only chance for Gary is

:49:59. > :50:01.to get behind the jack and fall back on it, bring that front bowl into

:50:02. > :50:09.play, I hope he has a chance with the last ball. Three short bowls.

:50:10. > :50:14.Yes, that is really in trouble now. No way he is making three out of

:50:15. > :50:18.this. The concern is the look on his face there. He probably thought he

:50:19. > :50:21.was close. I think with the second and the third bowl he thought his

:50:22. > :50:33.pace was good. He dropped a good metres short. -- a good meter. This

:50:34. > :50:39.one should finish it off. Good enough. Driving forehand, take one

:50:40. > :50:40.ball out and hold is done in for the other one, that is the only chance.

:50:41. > :50:57.-- stun. Just the way Gary is sitting at this

:50:58. > :51:01.one, trying to get into that ball, if you move that ball and stones

:51:02. > :51:06.through want of this one, he has got a chance. But realistically -- is

:51:07. > :51:11.done through. He is leaving Alex far too much room to play but he has to

:51:12. > :51:16.try and play it. He does have to try. If he gets the perfect contact

:51:17. > :51:21.on the red, he could take the three reds way, but it leaves Alex in

:51:22. > :51:25.awful lot of room to throw one in with his fourth and win the set. It

:51:26. > :51:29.would be a confidence booster if he could get it, though. If I was him I

:51:30. > :51:34.would think about driving this pretty hard. It wouldn't do him any

:51:35. > :51:43.harm to get a bit of a loose nut. -- loosener.

:51:44. > :51:53.An lucky in some respects, he played it well but didn't get the right

:51:54. > :51:58.connection -- unlucky. I think the scoreline is just about right,

:51:59. > :52:03.really, 9-5. Alex wasn't really under an awful lot of pressure. Yes,

:52:04. > :52:07.I think it reflects the game. I think Alex was quite consistent, he

:52:08. > :52:12.has done more than enough to win the set. Gary has struggled to get going

:52:13. > :52:16.a little bit. But I think he has shown signs in the last two or three

:52:17. > :52:22.ends. Hopefully he can perform a bit better in the second set and we can

:52:23. > :52:28.have a much tighter match. Yes, it is almost like you was sort of

:52:29. > :52:33.playing himself into the game -- he was. It had that feel about it. As

:52:34. > :52:39.opposed to coming on fairly prepared. And he knows that himself.

:52:40. > :52:44.He knew that he would be late here because of the National is, so... He

:52:45. > :52:51.was just hoping that he would find it quickly -- the nationals.

:52:52. > :52:55.There is very little chance of Alex having an off day when it comes to

:52:56. > :53:02.playing here at this venue. It rarely happens. Very little chance

:53:03. > :53:10.of having an off day, period, I think. Except when we played the

:53:11. > :53:15.Welsh international! He didn't really like the venue for some

:53:16. > :53:21.reason, I don't know why. Yes, that wasn't his best hunting ground. As

:53:22. > :53:22.soon as it was moved to Blackpool... That was brilliant for Alex, he won

:53:23. > :53:35.it. He needed to work hard to get

:53:36. > :53:55.everybody back in the frame again. APPLAUSE

:53:56. > :53:59.That's better. It is interesting to think of Alex four years ago, he was

:54:00. > :54:05.ranked number 13 in the world. And he was one match away from

:54:06. > :54:11.potentially going out of the top 16. But he won that match. The following

:54:12. > :54:17.season he was number six. The following season four. And now

:54:18. > :54:21.number three. It shows you sometimes when everybody thinks that you are

:54:22. > :54:24.rock-solid, think of the number of titles that Alex won in the last

:54:25. > :54:32.four years, and he was just one match away from really having to or

:54:33. > :54:35.five. It takes a small run of poor performances or poor results, to be

:54:36. > :54:41.honest with you. APPLAUSE

:54:42. > :54:47.Paul Foster was actually the same at one stage. He was on the edge of

:54:48. > :54:57.going out. It is exactly jack high. Your last one was ten inches.

:54:58. > :55:12.Alex doesn't look comfortable at this end. Playing, running, looking

:55:13. > :55:18.for the two green bowls juice but -- to split away. Well, he will take

:55:19. > :55:23.that. No problem with the result there, he hit the target area. You

:55:24. > :55:25.give him acknowledgement there, but he wasn't far away from getting what

:55:26. > :55:39.he was looking for. Gary needs to get something close.

:55:40. > :55:46.It is big, swinging balls, isn't it? Read on the green spot. I think if

:55:47. > :55:53.Alex plays his forehand he is going to be very close to the site ditch.

:55:54. > :55:58.He may choose to go across -- side ditch. Is this about a limit, a foot

:55:59. > :56:02.inside towards the ditch, that would be about the limit where you have to

:56:03. > :56:04.play across the head. Of Yearsley, the Jack is a foot outside the spot.

:56:05. > :56:15.-- obviously. The problem here with the cameraman

:56:16. > :56:25.moving the boom as Alex was about to play that delivery.

:56:26. > :56:33.They have reset the shot clock, and no time-out will be applied in that

:56:34. > :56:41.situation when there is an external destruction. He needs to miss Gary's

:56:42. > :56:46.bowl to win. Wrong side of it, good weight, perfect weight, but very

:56:47. > :56:49.hard to pick out the line going across. Good opportunity for Gary to

:56:50. > :56:57.school two at the end of the second set. I'm not sure he is out there

:56:58. > :57:02.wide enough. He was right on the top edge corner.

:57:03. > :57:07.He is out there wide enough, just about.

:57:08. > :57:12.APPLAUSE When he was standing on the mat on

:57:13. > :57:17.the inside edge, he was given every opportunity, but he has made the

:57:18. > :57:20.double. He deserved that, he drew two shot in with his first and

:57:21. > :57:27.second, that has split the head open. It is two more to the replaced

:57:28. > :57:32.jack. A great end to that for Gary, it gets him in the match.

:57:33. > :57:38.He felt he needed to start the second set well. A perfect start for

:57:39. > :57:59.him. Barry sticking to long jack length,

:58:00. > :58:02.which has been the favoured length of Alex Marshall -- Gary. This looks

:58:03. > :58:05.better. APPLAUSE

:58:06. > :58:38.That's more like it. I don't quite know what the

:58:39. > :58:49.disturbance was there, but something clearly disturbed Alex.

:58:50. > :00:08.Gary just missing the opportunity to get close to the red bowl.

:00:09. > :00:33.Once to get him for a good 2nd. -- want is to get in.

:00:34. > :00:43.Yes, falling onto a good shoulder. Good chance for Alex to rest. He

:00:44. > :00:51.will be happy with that. Four inches past.

:00:52. > :00:58.Lovely, smooth delivery, Alex Marshall, always been the same.

:00:59. > :01:03.Never had any problems with the bounce or anything like that. Get

:01:04. > :01:12.the bowl away absolutely perfect. Good end. Maybe just stops that

:01:13. > :01:18.forehand shot that Gary might have been contemplating. I think so, it

:01:19. > :01:20.would have been a forehand draw, just the perfect backhand draw

:01:21. > :01:32.available for him now, I think. APPLAUSE

:01:33. > :02:00.Good effort. 6 inches away. As you say, Greg, signs of Gary

:02:01. > :02:13.Kelly coming in, Surrey bowls that are very, very handy. Not much room

:02:14. > :02:17.for Alex to add a 2nd. When he is on form, he slides these in. Down on a

:02:18. > :02:31.great road. Just needs to run. Great effort! If he had dropped,

:02:32. > :02:37.that was a definite... He just touched it down there. 1 shot, Alex

:02:38. > :02:40.Marshall. APPLAUSE

:02:41. > :02:46.We all do that, what would have happened if I did this, it makes no

:02:47. > :02:51.difference to the game. We like the answer, that is all! On another day,

:02:52. > :03:27.it would have dropped in. APPLAUSE

:03:28. > :03:30.Very good. The last end, he had a really good 1st bowl in and he has

:03:31. > :03:51.done it again. Great reply. Come on, Gary!

:03:52. > :04:10.APPLAUSE Looks like we have got a match on

:04:11. > :04:16.our hands in the 2nd set. Both players, they have played to perfect

:04:17. > :04:28.up in bowls. -- perfect opening balls.

:04:29. > :04:37.It is nearly 2 inches. Not a lot of room to add a 2nd. Might be an idea

:04:38. > :04:52.to slide hast the jack and get into position. -- slide past the jack.

:04:53. > :05:02.He did not want to touch that. Well... As you say, Greg, anything

:05:03. > :05:06.behind, I think you would have been better on the forehand, personally.

:05:07. > :05:13.I think behind would have been good. Alex may be tempted to try and punch

:05:14. > :05:23.this through. Yes, a little bit more of a target, as well.

:05:24. > :05:33.Inside line, with a little bit of weight. Just hanging off. Now, what

:05:34. > :05:38.is he going to do with the green? Nearly got to the jack Clifford but

:05:39. > :05:47.he has pushed it into a good place for Gary. Probably the only shop

:05:48. > :05:52.that Alex has got is the forehand draw, it may be worth trying to

:05:53. > :06:04.block the forehand draw. Gary Wilson trouble to make another. -- Gary

:06:05. > :06:11.will struggle. Going deep. Cannot really blame him. That is OK. If

:06:12. > :06:18.Alex turns the jack Alex will have a shot to punch into it. Quite a

:06:19. > :06:28.deliberate shot. The forehand draw available for Alex.

:06:29. > :06:47.I think he is a touch wide on this. Turns back on it.

:06:48. > :06:57.If I was Gary, I would take the 1 and run.

:06:58. > :07:07.Yes, there are times to walk away! More than a practice shot, he is

:07:08. > :07:14.trying to get in but there does not look to be enough room, to be

:07:15. > :07:14.honest. Safe enough. 1 shot, Gary Kelly!

:07:15. > :07:43.APPLAUSE They are is Alex's wife, Diane. Give

:07:44. > :07:49.a wave, go on! She always has a big smile. I have never, ever seen her

:07:50. > :07:54.not in a good mood. Always been a happy girl!

:07:55. > :08:04.Jack length, 29 1/2 metres. Always happy, always smiling. Alex is 3- 1

:08:05. > :08:19.down, under pressure. Diane has a big smile on her face.

:08:20. > :08:40.Gary falling into that trap again, going long, dropping a yard short.

:08:41. > :09:02.Alex is looking good. That surprised me.

:09:03. > :09:10.Got to be further with this 1. Certainly, made a correction.

:09:11. > :09:16.APPLAUSE We expect Alex to be bad. -- to beat

:09:17. > :09:45.that. I thought he would, and he has. Just

:09:46. > :09:50.over a 3rd. An inch and a half... The last time proved it as well, you

:09:51. > :09:53.have to be within 2 or 3 inches with at least 1 of your bowls. Putting

:09:54. > :10:12.Alex under pressure. Yes, you don't want to leave it to

:10:13. > :10:21.the 3rd or 4th bowls-macro. Darryl -- bowl. He looked to add 6 inches

:10:22. > :10:29.to a foot on the last, he would like to pass the jack, beat the green.

:10:30. > :10:38.Yes, this would be a big, deep draw at the end. Not sure if that is

:10:39. > :10:45.going to count or not. Maybe just still 1. Yes, just the 1. Just a

:10:46. > :10:51.draw for Gary Kelly, either side, does not really matter. Firstly, it

:10:52. > :10:55.would be the forehand for me because if you touch the bowl on the way in

:10:56. > :11:01.you are bringing it away from the jack, on the backhand, pushing it

:11:02. > :11:09.towards the jack. He would have seen the angles. Good judgement.

:11:10. > :11:16.Playing slightly inside the line this time. Yes, as soon as a player

:11:17. > :11:19.starts to lean, you get the feeling they are not going to get back, a

:11:20. > :11:22.better 2nd. APPLAUSE

:11:23. > :11:29.Yes, I think he would have been happy with a Polish on the bowl onto

:11:30. > :11:35.the jack. -- with a push. Low percentage shot. I think that is

:11:36. > :11:45.what he tried but had never looked like getting back. Just an a few

:11:46. > :11:55.inches in here. For a 2nd shot. The line is good enough. The front plant

:11:56. > :11:59.would be good. A little wiggle, but not enough. 1 shot, Alex Marshall.

:12:00. > :12:08.APPLAUSE A tight hold set. The set score, 2-

:12:09. > :12:51.3 after four ends. Well, Alex looking for the good 1st

:12:52. > :12:51.bowl. The backhand. And he has got it.

:12:52. > :13:26.APPLAUSE Well, Gary has been dropping short

:13:27. > :13:31.with his 1st 1, making sure he was through with the 1st 1. At least,

:13:32. > :13:56.offer himself an opportunity to get to the head.

:13:57. > :14:07.That looks under... I cannot see Gary holding that line. It tips

:14:08. > :14:17.away. Using his strong bias all macro. Did not have to wait, still

:14:18. > :14:25.underneath the line. He will punish him with this one. Yes, it just

:14:26. > :14:32.depends for the bowl finishes. Quarter shot is available for Gary.

:14:33. > :14:43.It is a very good bowl, offers no target. Nothing close for Gary,

:14:44. > :14:48.either. He will have to run the bowls off, needs a really good draw

:14:49. > :14:55.shot, still one shot in front in the set. Looks like he is tracking

:14:56. > :15:02.through a bit. Yes, there it goes. Well... There is a shot on here for

:15:03. > :15:06.Gary with his next bowl if he is prepared to try it so Alex may be

:15:07. > :15:13.thinking, I might need a little bit of cover. Yes, he might play the

:15:14. > :15:22.forehand to try to finish just wide of the head. If he plays this

:15:23. > :15:23.absolutely perfect he could actually score a third and cover at the same

:15:24. > :15:44.time. It needs to arrive. Nope. That is not a third shot. I

:15:45. > :15:51.think... I think Gary needs to make sure he is arriving at this and give

:15:52. > :15:55.it a little chance. Not too heavy. Well... If I was Gary and think I

:15:56. > :16:02.would be playing one of his big drives. It is available to him. He

:16:03. > :16:08.will run out of time. He is using a time out. If he gets one of them and

:16:09. > :16:14.push is one of his own out, he is three down. If he takes one away,

:16:15. > :16:22.damage limitation. Looking very straight on the matter. So difficult

:16:23. > :16:23.with a reaching bowl. Trying that, controlled weight, heavier than I

:16:24. > :16:30.thought he might play. Just inside. Set score for-macro-3 after five

:16:31. > :16:59.ends. Judy Potter, in black and white

:17:00. > :17:19.today. Probably not quite, actually, it is

:17:20. > :17:24.probably clotted cream. I don't think Judy Dawes normal black and

:17:25. > :17:33.white. I am sure it will have a fancy name. I will have to get a

:17:34. > :17:37.list of it, just to be sure! Alex will be looking to get the first

:17:38. > :17:43.bowl in very close. Keep the pressure on Gary, push towards the

:17:44. > :18:19.winning line. Missing quite a few short bowls from both players.

:18:20. > :18:28.We always like to hear about other sportsmen over the years that watch

:18:29. > :18:34.the game. We have one watching today, great supporter of David

:18:35. > :18:40.Gourlay. Les Brickley, watching with his wife, Hazel. Played goalkeeper

:18:41. > :18:47.for Birmingham said! Long before we were born. In the late 40s. Even I

:18:48. > :18:55.wasn't born then! I wasn't going to say anything. I got in there be for

:18:56. > :18:59.you. A huge fan of the game, played it for a long time. Les, good luck

:19:00. > :19:05.to you, I hope you are enjoying this match. A lot of good footballers

:19:06. > :19:14.over the years have played the game of bowls.

:19:15. > :19:33.And please contact the world bolster and tell us if you know any, it is

:19:34. > :19:42.always good. -- bowls tour. The last bowl is 15 inches short of jack

:19:43. > :19:49.high. Backhand, a little swap? Still plenty of room to add a second.

:19:50. > :19:57.Looking pretty good. APPLAUSE

:19:58. > :20:05.A chance at this. Well played. Just left it a little shoulder.

:20:06. > :20:11.Well... Alex loves the sport hand, he has played some absolutely

:20:12. > :20:21.brilliant bowls on it in the last week or so and I think a shoulder is

:20:22. > :20:29.very tempting for him. Jogging after it, normally a sign that he likes

:20:30. > :20:35.it. Hunting the bowl down. Whether it is going to stay up or not...

:20:36. > :20:41.Well... Following in against the bias, through the gap. Might have

:20:42. > :20:51.taken one off. I think it's just one, Gary. The front one. Yes...

:20:52. > :21:08.Close, but I think... Sandra has got it absolutely right.

:21:09. > :21:12.Good line, again, from Gary but does he have enough pace? It does not

:21:13. > :21:23.look like it. I think both of these are good...

:21:24. > :21:33.They will both declare the shot on they are totally unsure. Alex has

:21:34. > :21:35.definitely got a good eye on that. I never know with Gary, he just leaves

:21:36. > :21:48.it to me! Now I am getting more and more

:21:49. > :21:49.useless at it as time goes on. Different coloured bowls, never

:21:50. > :22:16.easy. Well... See about the front one...

:22:17. > :22:28.Not going through. Looks like Sandra got back spot-on. Two shots, Gary

:22:29. > :22:32.Kelly. That is surprising, I did not think the back one was in body good

:22:33. > :22:45.call for Gary Kelly. Get the umpiring. -- get the umpire in.

:22:46. > :22:55.Just the one. I was wondering, but did not look like two to us. I think

:22:56. > :23:02.what happened... Alan took one out and moved the bowl to get his chucks

:23:03. > :23:09.out. I am fixing my scorecard yet again! Jack length, 28 metres. Both

:23:10. > :23:15.players are happy with that. They knew it was one. Yes. We had a very

:23:16. > :23:20.good view of those measures and you could tell, it just went through. No

:23:21. > :23:23.problems with the players and that is always good.

:23:24. > :23:32.APPLAUSE That is a bit of a run for home,

:23:33. > :23:57.three ends to go, 4-4. Alex moved onto the forehand,

:23:58. > :24:03.backhand is still available for Gary.

:24:04. > :24:07.He still could come around it but he might be tempted on the forehand. He

:24:08. > :24:24.will try it. Yes, any mess is a goodness, inside

:24:25. > :24:30.or outside his own. -- any mess is a good miss.

:24:31. > :24:33.Probably had the weight on to turn the ball, rather than draw it

:24:34. > :24:47.inside. Any correction here from Alex, he

:24:48. > :24:57.will be bang on the jack. Anything past his own... Well... Still 15 or

:24:58. > :25:06.18 inches short. He is leaving it open on the

:25:07. > :25:12.forehand for Alex, I would not let him have another go. Better to drop

:25:13. > :25:20.in on the forehand. Well... Gary, big drive up the first time, taking

:25:21. > :25:26.one of his own, he wanted the two front Reds. I am not sure about

:25:27. > :25:32.that. I think Gary thinks they are a lot closer than they are. Lots of

:25:33. > :25:42.time outs, he should go up and have a look. Vital end. About 15 inches,

:25:43. > :25:47.quite close for a shot. Gary could easily have taken his own green out.

:25:48. > :25:54.He would be better taking a walk up and having a look at this. He has

:25:55. > :25:59.not visited the head many times and it does not look like he will do it

:26:00. > :26:06.now. That is the way to play at. Just inside, perfect.

:26:07. > :26:24.Gary must come and look at the head, surely? Just going to play a draw.

:26:25. > :26:31.Goodness me. Just playing the draw. He gives another one away. It have

:26:32. > :26:43.to be reaching. Must be reaching. This is two coming in if he had

:26:44. > :26:52.said. Hear me! Now then... He gets the green bowl out, he scores three

:26:53. > :26:58.shots. Great opportunity. Well, there is a definite shot on. Play

:26:59. > :27:03.the forehand or edge it out on the backhand? The advantage with the

:27:04. > :27:06.forehand if he plays it... I think the forehand, all the angles are

:27:07. > :27:12.covered, I think it looks like a good forehand shot. If he plays it,

:27:13. > :27:19.it is good but if he gets into that, he brings in the other bowls. It

:27:20. > :27:25.does not look like anything set of the forehand. The backhand is risky,

:27:26. > :27:30.looks like a good forehand, positive shot. Interesting to see how he

:27:31. > :27:40.plays this, could draw another one. It would be safer to draw. This

:27:41. > :27:46.could be a matchwinner. It has that look about it, he is going to play

:27:47. > :27:52.at. Yes, he is. Can he hold long enough? Can he hold long enough?

:27:53. > :28:00.There it goes. It just picks like mad. When you are slightly inside,

:28:01. > :28:03.but a nice weight for the job. One shot, Alex Marshall.

:28:04. > :28:08.APPLAUSE Definitely worth a go, it was a

:28:09. > :28:17.matchwinner if he got at. The set scorer is 5-4 after seven ends. Gary

:28:18. > :28:25.is still in turgid at 5-4. Strange shot. -- Gary is still in touch.

:28:26. > :28:40.I think he thought the bowls be a lot closer. He has got to win two

:28:41. > :29:02.ends to get it into a tie-break. Jack length, 28 and a half metres.

:29:03. > :29:20.APPLAUSE Great opening bowl.

:29:21. > :29:29.I think Gary has two win these ends. I agree. Would be very happy with

:29:30. > :29:39.two singles, a good reply. APPLAUSE

:29:40. > :29:46.Considering Gary was playing over the weekend and out very late, he

:29:47. > :29:51.has put in a really good fist, given a go at it, no doubt about that.

:29:52. > :30:02.Very much in this second set, on balance. I think he was deliberately

:30:03. > :30:26.looking for the back green bowl, to give himself position.

:30:27. > :30:44.It is just going to be the wrong side, I think. Yes.

:30:45. > :30:52.Looking to draw the number one shot here.

:30:53. > :31:00.As I say, he does like this forehand. Brilliant.

:31:01. > :31:01.APPLAUSE Well, that will change Gary's

:31:02. > :31:15.thoughts now. The key to this one was getting get

:31:16. > :31:27.behind the jack. Absolutely perfect. -- getting it.

:31:28. > :31:35.Time-out called. Gary has two time-outs remaining. The way that

:31:36. > :31:41.Gary plays, he could take the other one away if he gets the ball into

:31:42. > :31:46.there. Never mind the shop. I think he has stated. He has to drive, he

:31:47. > :31:52.has to make contact to give himself a chance with the last bowl. If he

:31:53. > :32:00.makes perfect contact he could get the two reds out if he gets the

:32:01. > :32:05.perfect contact. He has stated. Oh, goodness me, that was close, he

:32:06. > :32:07.could have got the right angle that moved the jack at least. But now he

:32:08. > :32:23.is in trouble. I think Alex will probably cover the

:32:24. > :32:27.spot. I think Gary has got the two best bowls on the respot. I think

:32:28. > :32:34.Alex will just push a little wide and cover the respot. -- wider. He

:32:35. > :32:48.will be in a great position then. Almost the perfect end, this, for

:32:49. > :32:53.Alex. Two on the jack, and the spot covered, you cannot do any better

:32:54. > :32:59.than that. He has just about got the spot covered, look at that. On the

:33:00. > :33:07.nose. Can't see it, doesn't know where it is on the mat. Not only

:33:08. > :33:12.does Gary have to hit the target, he has to get the edge and get the two

:33:13. > :33:17.away. Anything else and Alex has it covered. More or less match over.

:33:18. > :33:21.Yes, he doesn't want any jack movement this time. First of all, he

:33:22. > :33:32.has take the target. He is inside it. Still only does the two, the two

:33:33. > :33:38.third shots. Two shots, Alex Marshall. It has been a test for

:33:39. > :33:42.Alex this match, in many respects. Sometimes there is no value in

:33:43. > :33:47.winning a match very easily. But I have a feeling that he will be quite

:33:48. > :33:51.happy with this. Absolutely. He knows it is a tough game against

:33:52. > :33:56.Gary and he will be very glad to come through this, barring a major

:33:57. > :34:04.disaster on the last end, which I can't see happening.

:34:05. > :34:29.That is where Gary has been scoring singles and doubles.

:34:30. > :34:37.APPLAUSE Yes, great opening bowl again.

:34:38. > :34:49.Played pretty steady all the way through the game.

:34:50. > :35:14.Alex will just be looking to pack the head, make sure he doesn't leave

:35:15. > :35:22.an opening for Gary Kelly to score any more. Although he really wants

:35:23. > :35:29.to. He will be happy to lose a single, double or treble, it will

:35:30. > :35:37.not matter to him. Gary needs four. No mistakes, he needs every bowl in.

:35:38. > :35:44.He is pushing it forward, but it is not going to arrive. That is going

:35:45. > :35:48.to make it very difficult, because Alex can afford now to reach himself

:35:49. > :35:50.any lengthening of the jack, and it will take that front ball well out

:35:51. > :36:12.of contention. APPLAUSE

:36:13. > :36:19.Better take a wee chance, Gary, try and push one or two of these red

:36:20. > :36:25.want out. A good forehand, Greg. Can't afford to get too heavy, got

:36:26. > :36:33.to keep this bowl in the area. Well-controlled and on a decent

:36:34. > :36:37.looking lie. Wants to drop in the red. Didn't stop on the first one,

:36:38. > :36:44.needed to stop there. Alex can pop another one in. He might even

:36:45. > :36:49.swapped of the forehand and just keep another one away from the other

:36:50. > :36:53.deuce rather than punching three together. Yes, you don't want to

:36:54. > :36:58.group them. Gary Kelly is more than capable of taking more than three

:36:59. > :36:59.balls of the ring. Two feet wide on the forehand would be absolutely

:37:00. > :37:28.perfect. Pushing it out wide and making sure

:37:29. > :37:35.he is not anywhere near the front bowl. Just looking for a decent

:37:36. > :37:38.weight. Well, he is trying to encourage it forward but I think

:37:39. > :37:45.that probably is going to beat the back one. It does, it is plenty good

:37:46. > :37:53.enough. Get out of that, Gary. There is no chance. The best he can do

:37:54. > :37:55.here is three, surely. There is a possibility, Greg, but I don't know

:37:56. > :38:00.of the angles are absolutely right to allow for it.

:38:01. > :38:08.Time-out called. It is going to be a difficult one for him to play. If he

:38:09. > :38:13.gets down on the backhand with a slight angle of the ball, he might

:38:14. > :38:18.get onto that to take that away and move the jack. But, oh, goodness me,

:38:19. > :38:24.I don't know if the angles are right for it. I think the only way here is

:38:25. > :38:29.if he hit his own bowl with a deep screw forward... No, it is

:38:30. > :38:34.impossible! That is a new Q-Tip you are using there. We need an old one

:38:35. > :38:38.for that sort of shot. I can't see anything that works. It is just the

:38:39. > :38:42.way that Gary plays. It is possible for him to take the two bowls, he

:38:43. > :38:47.has to get the angles come back onto the jack and extend the head for

:38:48. > :38:49.four. I think it is actually possible to play it. But it would be

:38:50. > :39:00.difficult from two yards away. I think he has to try it. I don't

:39:01. > :39:06.think there is any other way around it.

:39:07. > :39:11.The million to one shot. He is on the forehand, I can't see him

:39:12. > :39:18.getting it on the forehand. I can see what he is after now, the

:39:19. > :39:34.front ball through. 1-shot, Gary Kelly. Set and match to

:39:35. > :39:38.Alex Marshall. Really difficult. Nothing easy about that shot. A

:39:39. > :39:44.comprehensive and professional display their by Alex Marshall.

:39:45. > :39:48.David very, very good. Very steady, to be honest with you, and he played

:39:49. > :40:00.the big bowls when needed. Looking good. Two sets. 9-5, 7-5. Alex

:40:01. > :40:10.Marshall tested, but you will be delighted to move into the second

:40:11. > :40:14.round without too much trouble. Gary Kelly, the 26-year-old. Alex

:40:15. > :40:21.Marshall is 48, the six time world Champion chicken hands at the start

:40:22. > :40:25.of the game. -- shaking hands. That's Gary Kelly, just looking to

:40:26. > :40:30.drop in on the ball to get the two that he needed and actually give

:40:31. > :40:34.himself a chance on the first set. Going on that, the first end of the

:40:35. > :40:38.second set, we see I could marshal, there he goes, putting the pressure

:40:39. > :40:44.on Gary all the way, -- we see Alex Marshall.

:40:45. > :40:50.And yet again, keeping the pressure on.

:40:51. > :40:59.And Alex Marshall just never fields, really, it just keeps drawing,

:41:00. > :41:03.drawing, drawing, doing the business every time, and he ran out of very

:41:04. > :41:08.good winner. It is always good to see somebody being pushed like that.

:41:09. > :41:15.But look at the end one, ten against eight, very little in it. -- the

:41:16. > :41:19.ends one. Alex Marshall was more consistent than Gary Kelly. The

:41:20. > :41:23.defending champion has eased his way into the second round. I have to

:41:24. > :41:27.say, he will be happy about that. He knows he has got a few gears to move

:41:28. > :41:33.up but it is always good to get a bit of a test in the first round.

:41:34. > :41:37.STUDIO: Good for Alex Marshall to get through, a tough first round.

:41:38. > :41:41.Facing up against a man like the six time champion, it was always going

:41:42. > :41:45.to be difficult. How do you sum up the way that you play today? Yes, it

:41:46. > :41:49.was always going to be difficult. Alex is the reigning champion. I am

:41:50. > :41:57.disappointed with my performance, to be honest. Just inconsistent. Just

:41:58. > :42:01.didn't get the ball is in enough to try and put Alex under pressure.

:42:02. > :42:06.Credit to Alex, he played the better bowls. He deserved the victory. He

:42:07. > :42:10.did make you work a bit in both sets. I was very blue with the way I

:42:11. > :42:16.started off, very well. I put Gary under pressure Bhogle I was very.

:42:17. > :42:19.Gary has been a lot more consistent than that and he is more than

:42:20. > :42:22.capable of winning the one months. In the second set I dropped off and

:42:23. > :42:26.Gary came on a little bit, it could have gone either way. Wiesberger

:42:27. > :42:32.yesterday about pressure. As you said, once you are on the brink,

:42:33. > :42:37.there can be no nerves -- rink. How does it feel to be out here as the

:42:38. > :42:40.defending champion? It is always good to come back and defend the

:42:41. > :42:44.title, I love the place and I try not to put too much pressure on

:42:45. > :42:48.myself. Getting the first set and your belt settles you down and help

:42:49. > :42:51.you a lot. Gary came back strongly in the second set and did better

:42:52. > :42:56.than he did in the first. That set could have gone either way.

:42:57. > :43:04.Congratulations, and commiserations, Gary, and hopefully we will see you

:43:05. > :43:07.back here in 12 months' time. We're going to chat about a match that

:43:08. > :43:11.took place this morning between Mark Dawes, the 33-year-old from

:43:12. > :43:15.Lancashire. Seeded number 16. Up against Jamie Smith from Queensland

:43:16. > :43:20.in Australia. Deeney is making his first appearance here at Potters. --

:43:21. > :43:24.Jamie. In the first set Jamie struggled to cope with Mark, Mark

:43:25. > :43:30.one that comfortably taking it 9-2. We are going to join it in the

:43:31. > :43:36.second set, Mark Dawes leads to-0 as we draw it -- drawing it in the

:43:37. > :43:51.second end. Robert Paxton in the commentary box.

:43:52. > :44:02.APPLAUSE COMMENTATOR: Carrying on where he

:44:03. > :44:03.left off in the first set here. His first bowl has been pretty good

:44:04. > :44:15.today. Jimmy is a typical Aussie, he is

:44:16. > :44:23.very laid back. He has a sense of humour. An easy-going sort of guy,

:44:24. > :44:25.but he does speak his mind. And it doesn't always go down well with

:44:26. > :44:36.officialdom back in Australia. Especially when you are looking to

:44:37. > :44:42.get onto elite squads and things like that, where they are not really

:44:43. > :44:48.happy about people voicing their opinions.

:44:49. > :44:56.Like most sports, there is a little bit of politics in there. Yes,

:44:57. > :45:01.definitely. You have to lead to a bowls do the talking, basically,

:45:02. > :45:03.that is the easiest way. -- let your bowls do the talking. This is not

:45:04. > :45:26.wasted by any means. Well, that is another shot, the jack

:45:27. > :45:31.are still available, it doesn't help the drive shot, so it has to be a

:45:32. > :45:32.draw, hanging off the middle of the mat, see how he gets back with that

:45:33. > :45:45.one. It is all about weak here. Chasing

:45:46. > :45:50.began. You cannot afford it. -- it is all about weight here. -- chasing

:45:51. > :45:51.it again. He had the line straight. You cannot afford to be through the

:45:52. > :46:02.head. It wouldn't be so bad if the jack

:46:03. > :46:04.was readily available for a little trail. But it is a hard shot in the

:46:05. > :46:17.hand. Just close this right out now. Yes,

:46:18. > :46:22.it is a choice, really, do you draw and try and block up that gap, or do

:46:23. > :46:28.you cover the back balls just in case Jimmy decides to come

:46:29. > :46:33.throughout it? -- threw at it. Another shot, a bit of a shoulder,

:46:34. > :46:37.but Jimmy has a big yard off. It is the right side of the jack so he

:46:38. > :46:39.cannot use it to get it onto the jack. It is a pressure bowl now for

:46:40. > :46:49.Jamie. I think in a normal club game you

:46:50. > :46:53.would play down a narrow line, it will hold an drop in. But narrow

:46:54. > :46:59.lines in the portable rink are dangerous. The best you can do here

:47:00. > :47:10.is to take one of. Just in the wrong side. Three shots, Mark Dawes. You

:47:11. > :47:13.were saying Jimmy would like to give Mark Dawes a lead in the second set,

:47:14. > :47:34.but 5-0 after two ends is not great. We can see the jack lengths. Jimmy

:47:35. > :47:40.trying the long 29.5. Not much variation there, 29 to 27 has been

:47:41. > :47:46.there for most of the game. I suggest if Jimmy can get the Jack he

:47:47. > :47:50.goes to 23 or 24. Yes, it is a tough one. He has to change something. The

:47:51. > :47:59.hardest part at the moment is just getting hold of the jack.

:48:00. > :48:08.They are both playing some decent bowls out there at the moment. But

:48:09. > :48:32.Mark is not giving Jamie much opportunity.

:48:33. > :49:54.APPLAUSE Pressure on from Jamie there. One

:49:55. > :50:18.red. Just hanging on still. Well, get on the green ball and

:50:19. > :50:22.fallback would be absolutely perfect, a return of the jack would

:50:23. > :50:29.be good, but he doesn't want it to the green. I think he has been

:50:30. > :50:33.unlucky. He has. One green. It has given Jamie a little opportunity

:50:34. > :50:35.here now. He has the same ball from Jamie and can drop the red down and

:50:36. > :50:45.get three. He's using one of his time-outs

:50:46. > :50:59.here. Time-out called. What he is looking

:51:00. > :51:04.here at is if he can get into the jack or into the ball. Any movement

:51:05. > :51:07.into the jack, preferably in this area here, will make the three

:51:08. > :51:11.shots. He has to be careful he doesn't get the outside edge, the

:51:12. > :51:15.outside edge of the green ball and moving the jack cross. But other

:51:16. > :51:20.than that you looks pretty good for it. He is just repeating his last

:51:21. > :51:26.bowl. Just a fraction of a touch on the jack.

:51:27. > :51:29.In the context of the game, he knows it is a big shot here, an

:51:30. > :51:50.opportunity for him. It was the right idea. But you just

:51:51. > :51:59.have to believe that if you pushed out a little bit more it will stay.

:52:00. > :52:03.APPLAUSE As we said before, it is always the

:52:04. > :52:10.same when we get the fire is coming in. It is very, very hard to get a

:52:11. > :52:15.grip of this portable rink, you have to play those slightly overshot. It

:52:16. > :52:19.does take time to get used the rink, even the home of fires from the

:52:20. > :52:25.UK-based countries, I mean, it even them time to work out what shots the

:52:26. > :53:10.play and shot selection -- the home qualifiers.

:53:11. > :53:39.Needs an adjustment there for Jamie. Two short bowls is always going to

:53:40. > :53:42.be a little movement, but good to see the mat up and the change of

:53:43. > :53:46.lengths from Jamie. That is what we were thinking he would have to do,

:53:47. > :53:51.to try and shake Mark Dawes a little bit. I don't think it will do much

:53:52. > :53:56.in terms of stopping his standard. There we go. He just proves the

:53:57. > :54:03.point. He is used to the mat up as well. It is good for Jamie, it is

:54:04. > :54:12.the right thing to do. It is a measure. They look like they are

:54:13. > :54:19.touching. But they don't. I don't like the look of it! Again, that

:54:20. > :54:23.inside line is just not there. I'm surprised he played it on that side,

:54:24. > :54:27.to be honest. The other side looks favoured to me. I think Mark will be

:54:28. > :54:37.turning over, he is looking to get back on the green. I think both

:54:38. > :54:42.players will change it. Well, it is impossible for us to tell, but there

:54:43. > :54:49.must be some daylight between the bowl and the jack.

:54:50. > :55:01.Mark on the forehand after the backhand draw. He is very close. You

:55:02. > :55:03.have to punch yourself now. That is exactly what Jamie would do on the

:55:04. > :55:11.other side. APPLAUSE

:55:12. > :55:20.Really good bowl. At least one, maybe two. Two shot red. Jamie is

:55:21. > :55:24.left with a very hard shot again, really. I think it is worth little

:55:25. > :55:35.bit stronger at this on his forehand. Time-out called. Trying to

:55:36. > :55:40.let the ball drift slightly around, he can see the red bowl, even from

:55:41. > :55:45.that picture you can see the red bowl. It is available to him, with

:55:46. > :55:51.weight. Just don't try it with a yard on.

:55:52. > :56:08.No, just not strong enough. The right shot, just not enough weight.

:56:09. > :56:15.Mark deciding not even to bother with his last hole. Happy enough to

:56:16. > :56:20.take the double -- with his last bowl. He is absolutely right. 5-1,

:56:21. > :56:38.takes it up to 7-1. Jamie is just getting sucked in,

:56:39. > :56:46.isn't he? Yes, he just hasn't got aggressive. He has been almost very

:56:47. > :56:50.defensive. I say, it is very unusual for the Australian style of play, to

:56:51. > :56:54.be honest, they are very aggressive on the greens they play out there.

:56:55. > :56:56.It is surprised how they do change their game when they come over here.

:56:57. > :57:25.-- surprising. Mark now will be looking to close

:57:26. > :57:34.this out within the next couple of ends. Almost be closing the match

:57:35. > :57:42.out. Indeed, Jamie has been here a few days, at the practising, but the

:57:43. > :57:45.hours and -- had the practising. -- put the hours in. But there is

:57:46. > :57:50.nothing really to beat the matchplay. And you do get called on,

:57:51. > :58:00.you know, it happens to you over the years. I have probably watch more

:58:01. > :58:03.bowls in the portable rink than anyone, and it still sucks me in

:58:04. > :58:06.when you go out there and you go out for that shot occasionally, the

:58:07. > :58:12.little inside runner. It is so hard to play.

:58:13. > :58:27.Good effort. APPLAUSE

:58:28. > :58:42.One red. Bowled short, ten inches short of jack height.

:58:43. > :58:59.They are going to back the short bowls and hide that one right on the

:59:00. > :59:04.blindside. The player doesn't have any idea where it is around the

:59:05. > :59:09.front ones, it makes it even harder now for Jamie. It is not going to

:59:10. > :59:13.get back. Any sort of weight there just doesn't play through. At this

:59:14. > :59:19.stage I thought he might have been tempted to have a runner at it and

:59:20. > :59:23.try and shift something. He is playing to the hard weight again,

:59:24. > :59:31.Mark is going to be looking to cover now. He had a look at the scoreboard

:59:32. > :59:37.there, that is what he was looking at, to see where he was regarding

:59:38. > :59:42.ends and scoring. He realises he cannot afford to lose two shot here.

:59:43. > :59:46.The danger is if he flicks is on ball out he loses three, but to do

:59:47. > :59:50.that he probably has to take the other red. To the left of your

:59:51. > :59:54.picture. It has to be worth playing this. Give each he played a good

:59:55. > :00:00.bowl there, not too far through, but the deepest.

:00:01. > :00:20.To give himself a chance, he has got to get the shot here. Looking a bit

:00:21. > :00:26.better this time. But again, on the inside line. Needs a touch. He has a

:00:27. > :00:34.touch, it might give him second, needed to turn it over once more,

:00:35. > :00:41.good effort. Nicer wait for the job. The Australian way of measuring! One

:00:42. > :00:49.shot, Mark Dawes. Go across to both bowls. Not something that we have

:00:50. > :00:54.taken up over here in the UK. Eight few players do it, on occasion, I do

:00:55. > :00:57.but it is one of those things out there, done by most of the players.

:00:58. > :01:53.Keeps the game moving. A little pick-up. Yes... There it

:01:54. > :02:30.goes. A nice weight, even though he missed it.

:02:31. > :02:46.APPLAUSE Grade from Jamie. -- that is great.

:02:47. > :02:52.Mark Dawes, successful, looking to score as well. Is he prepared to

:02:53. > :03:03.stay aggressive or will he be defensive? That is why he is coming

:03:04. > :03:10.up to have a look. Timeout called. He has got the split available.

:03:11. > :03:17.There is always a chance of the jack going through. If he is able to

:03:18. > :03:24.extend all the way through to hear, it would be excellent. The early

:03:25. > :03:30.danger, if he'd plays a run or a mess, it will give him a bit of

:03:31. > :03:39.room. It must be a quick one. Looking for the two bowls. My...

:03:40. > :03:43.Goodness me... I was certain that was going to take the two of them

:03:44. > :03:54.but it just seemed to dip in the last foot or so. Once again, out of

:03:55. > :04:02.this, smelling of roses. He has been bang on target. But, the end result

:04:03. > :04:04.has been absolutely maximum. Slipping a bit, that time. Did not

:04:05. > :04:11.put it within six inches of the spot. Keeping Jamie under the cosh

:04:12. > :04:19.in this game, not giving him the opportunity to score. No multiples.

:04:20. > :04:26.Not sure that has made it, no, it hasn't. Dropping about four feet

:04:27. > :04:35.short. Mark is now in a position turning to down, to two up. A good

:04:36. > :04:38.game for him, playing some very good bowls, good runners, maximum result.

:04:39. > :04:45.From everyone of them. Followed it up. That is the big thing, every

:04:46. > :04:52.time he hits he is following up with a good draw. He is doing it again.

:04:53. > :04:53.He has done it. That is super stuff, it really is.

:04:54. > :05:10.APPLAUSE Jamie has called the boy on a good

:05:11. > :05:24.day, or a bad day, whatever way you want to look at it! Bit of a

:05:25. > :05:33.surprise. Giving it a chance. He has strong at. Goodlad, well done!

:05:34. > :05:41.APPLAUSE Scores the single, 8-2. One shot,

:05:42. > :05:44.Jamie Smith. With two ends to go, he needs seven shots, I don't think it

:05:45. > :05:56.will happen in this match. He will have to chase it.

:05:57. > :06:04.Playing similar length. Stretching it out a touch.

:06:05. > :06:18.Well, with two shots here for Mark Dawes, this match will be over. The

:06:19. > :06:27.best Jamie can do in the last two ends are to four, level the scores

:06:28. > :06:31.at 10-10 and it is not enough. Another good starter, played well

:06:32. > :06:39.enough to have taken out some other players who have won. Jamie, played

:06:40. > :06:46.some very, very good bowls but Mark Dawes has been very consistent. Yes,

:06:47. > :06:53.the big difference is the shot down, Mark has always converted while

:06:54. > :07:05.Jamie has played in between shots. He got nothing out of them today.

:07:06. > :07:19.He had a chance, to be honest. Yes, Mark will move across. Posted out a

:07:20. > :07:25.little bit wider. It is all about weight and this one will get

:07:26. > :07:28.whacked. That is good. -- will get back. A nice touch.

:07:29. > :07:54.APPLAUSE Giving this a chance. As he got

:07:55. > :08:06.enough to get through the red? Yes, that was good, well done.

:08:07. > :08:12.He has played some very good stuff in this game. More or less come away

:08:13. > :08:15.with virtually nothing, only scoring in three ends but he has been much

:08:16. > :08:32.better than that. Clear road for Mark, it's good. That

:08:33. > :08:40.is a good bowl. Given that, two or three chances, come inside. Jamie

:08:41. > :08:44.has to be looking at this thread. Interesting to say if Jamie plays it

:08:45. > :08:49.out or tries to draw second, that is the thinking process going on at the

:08:50. > :08:56.moment. The double is OK. Timeout called. Perfect connection, get the

:08:57. > :09:10.touch off his own green, into the red.

:09:11. > :09:26.He has got at. Not the jack! No! Dear, oh dear. That is just so

:09:27. > :09:30.unlucky. He looked as if he was going to get that bowl absolutely

:09:31. > :09:37.clean and he will lose the match. No way on earth that Mark Dawes is

:09:38. > :09:46.going to miss this. He was a bowl away, really. Even half a bowl.

:09:47. > :09:51.Really unlucky. Going to put that on the scorecard. Just a shame he

:09:52. > :10:03.hadn't started playing that a little bit earlier in the game, it could

:10:04. > :10:10.have been different. Really, really unlucky. The journey finishes here

:10:11. > :10:21.for him in the first round. Mark Dawes winning 9-2, 10-2, and on

:10:22. > :10:27.first scorer line in many ways. Mark Dawes, the second set and match.

:10:28. > :10:32.Safely through to the second round. Good stuff by Mark Dawes, no doubt.

:10:33. > :10:38.But it looks very one sided but it really wasn't a game like that. Mark

:10:39. > :10:43.was playing well, good hits, maximum results and Jamie got a couple of

:10:44. > :10:50.bad results. Unfortunately, he will be making the long journey home.

:10:51. > :10:54.Mark Dawes has now earned a spot alongside Alex Marshall in the

:10:55. > :10:59.second round. Other matchups include Stuart Anderson against Mervyn King.

:11:00. > :11:27.David Corkill alongside me. Reward for Mark Dawes. Alex Marshall is

:11:28. > :11:32.next. A tough match but he will be happy. Ranking points and that is

:11:33. > :11:37.exactly what you need to do. Also, he has had a match on the rink and

:11:38. > :11:42.that's important. He played well. Alex Marshall said to me yesterday,

:11:43. > :11:46.no nerves, he feels comfortable and he did what he had to do. Is that a

:11:47. > :11:52.fair way to describe this performance? Gary was coming off the

:11:53. > :11:57.weekend national championships and any question that Alex was being

:11:58. > :12:03.asked, he was able to answer and did it constantly. I felt he was not

:12:04. > :12:06.under the pressure that probably Mark Dawes will put him under

:12:07. > :12:10.because Gary was not really functioning until the second set and

:12:11. > :12:14.then he started to play well. Alex will move up a gear or two against

:12:15. > :12:18.Mark Dawes, I think there is no doubt about that, he knows he will

:12:19. > :12:23.have to and he will do that. The first trophy won this week by two

:12:24. > :12:29.guys who have been to the final before. Stuart Anderson and Darren

:12:30. > :12:36.Burnett, celebrating today. And they deserved, superb. Anderson, for the

:12:37. > :12:42.most part, winning the battle at the front end. Darren Burnett playing

:12:43. > :12:47.some fantastic bowls, really. You're looking at every single shot that he

:12:48. > :12:50.played, getting results but also, he was on the target area and that is

:12:51. > :12:55.important. When you are playing well, things go for you.

:12:56. > :13:01.Commiserations to Robbie and Colin who were beaten but they were up

:13:02. > :13:05.against good players today. Let's remind you of what is to come over

:13:06. > :13:19.the next couple of days. Tonight, highlights on BBC Two.

:13:20. > :13:27.And tomorrow, we run the red button from 10am. And we are back on BBC

:13:28. > :13:37.Two at 1pm for the final of the mixed pairs.

:13:38. > :13:44.That is just about it from the first day of Corbridge, the first of the

:13:45. > :13:48.four trophies won by two guys who were desperate to get their hands on

:13:49. > :13:52.it. Stewart Anderson and Darren Burnett, the first to celebrate

:13:53. > :13:53.winning here. Join us for more action tomorrow. Until then,
