:00:33. > :00:41.what length and it was up to them. At this stage you go where the lead.
:00:42. > :00:45.Double and build from there. Exactly just give the lead a choice, it is
:00:46. > :00:50.the skip school sometimes, play were you fancy all way you will get balls
:00:51. > :01:34.close. I will adapt to the length you want to play.
:01:35. > :01:48.If you run a new ROK, keep coming a wee bit Julie. -- then you are OK.
:01:49. > :01:54.That is what he was looking for now. A point really to not worry about
:01:55. > :02:00.the jack, just beat the opponents bowl. Katherine has gone off
:02:01. > :02:05.slightly in the middle part of the set.
:02:06. > :02:25.APPLAUSE That was a better line. Run. Run for
:02:26. > :02:31.home here you have drawn the short. Run before you then. Very good. That
:02:32. > :02:40.is the key to it. APPLAUSE
:02:41. > :02:44.Gets your skipper not only in a happy mood that takes the pressure
:02:45. > :02:46.off. You don't want to be facing two down at the end. Relief therefore
:02:47. > :03:09.both players. This is close very close. Got its
:03:10. > :03:28.first time. A four shot lead is nice to have
:03:29. > :03:29.that should rather have it going into the last band rather than
:03:30. > :03:48.middle of the way through. If you can get that. If I get Alex
:03:49. > :03:56.solid is there enough room for him. Yes. Looks like a back runner for
:03:57. > :04:00.me. They will be attacking. Looks like a forehand runner, a jack in
:04:01. > :04:09.the ditch is a good result. Exactly, the best result probably. He has a
:04:10. > :04:15.chance there. He's got it. APPLAUSE
:04:16. > :04:25.The option available both ways. He was under the head however, gets a
:04:26. > :04:28.perfect result, lies three. A good example Andy, aim for the Jack and
:04:29. > :04:35.if you drift underneath you'll get something. A great example of a
:04:36. > :04:41.percentage shot. These Alex nothing but a draw. I would expect him to
:04:42. > :04:45.draw this one. The danger is no matter where he puts it Darren will
:04:46. > :04:52.be after it. Julie is not saying too much. It is the weight more than
:04:53. > :04:57.anything. He is not there. Not sure that is saving. Might possibly be
:04:58. > :05:19.two in it. Might even be three. However you would
:05:20. > :05:33.add the final bowl. However you would
:05:34. > :05:38.sure he is well out on the high line, only has to drop in to feed
:05:39. > :05:48.Jack high and he is good. This is scoring, it is just how many. A
:05:49. > :05:56.definite two and a luck after that. Three out. While, three out and a
:05:57. > :06:09.measure for the fourth. That is a massive turn around. Just shows the
:06:10. > :06:18.benefit of a good strike. Both officials needed for this. Just
:06:19. > :06:32.getting through to the bowl and they will check this one. I think it is
:06:33. > :06:45.only three. Bad enough I would say if you are Julie and Alex. Three
:06:46. > :06:56.shots Burnett and Rednall. He sorted that out pretty quickly. This jack
:06:57. > :07:54.on the last tee has not been a good tactic from Katherine and Darren.
:07:55. > :08:07.Great line again. Just dropped a bit away here. Very good. Easy in swing.
:08:08. > :08:12.Just once to gently come in. That will do. Was looking for the bowl to
:08:13. > :08:34.drop. Better. Better here Julie. Calling
:08:35. > :08:38.not to come up and it is. Good effort. Seven inches short I would
:08:39. > :10:19.say. Certainly looks better. Said it has
:10:20. > :10:20.to stop but he can pick the Jack up. Great position.
:10:21. > :10:33.APPLAUSE There we see the draw, added 15
:10:34. > :10:38.inches on his previous delivery. The ball falls in and he is happy. He
:10:39. > :10:45.has done a lot of damage, he really has a mismatch. The trouble is there
:10:46. > :10:52.is no hit shot here because no bowl on to bowl, who will be no better
:10:53. > :10:54.off because if he wings it, my goodness he could lose four. Nothing
:10:55. > :11:06.but a draw. Correct. Julie trying to give Alex
:11:07. > :11:35.encouragement here. You can draw this.
:11:36. > :11:43.He is on a nice looking track for it. Just needed a little bit more.
:11:44. > :11:54.Another foot would have been good enough.
:11:55. > :12:07.The score 8-8 after seven ends. That is for ends. Should be very tight
:12:08. > :12:12.the way this match is going. A couple of counts but having said
:12:13. > :12:21.that. Very good bowling, a lot of good convergence. You would expect
:12:22. > :12:29.that with two top-class skip. -- skips.
:12:30. > :13:03.Still on that line and run. A bit of both I think. Big yard.
:13:04. > :13:16.It's stopping quick. Clear as a bell. Still on track. Definitely
:13:17. > :13:24.further. Alex Iwobi sitting there saying you tell them. -- is probably
:13:25. > :13:31.sitting. Very good bowl from Katherine. Maybe a bit early for
:13:32. > :13:39.Alex actually, when the out of school. How far is that? Eight
:13:40. > :13:57.inches. You can still keep your hand Julie.
:13:58. > :14:53.Encouragement that the bowl was sitting just on the seem of the
:14:54. > :15:00.carpet. That is why it is sitting at a very strange angle. It certainly
:15:01. > :15:07.is, propped up well on the scene. A strange angle for a bowl to be on --
:15:08. > :15:12.seam. They have two digits somewhere -- stitch it somewhere but
:15:13. > :15:26.occasionally you get a boulder which sits on it. How far was Mac a foot.
:15:27. > :15:30.It was a big bit of carpet down there. I don't know how many
:15:31. > :15:34.sections that are on the green, I'm sure you could inform me, you know
:15:35. > :15:46.the technical small details. Usually five metres. Further. Further. Over
:15:47. > :15:58.the same. Yes. That is number three. Some very good draws. -- seam.
:15:59. > :16:07.Another question being asked again of Alex Marshall. Darren Burnett has
:16:08. > :16:12.been popping bowls in. A confidence Alex Marshall would have no trouble
:16:13. > :16:19.drawing the shot, maybe just not so happy today. Needs a big bowl today,
:16:20. > :16:21.cannot afford to drop three. I tell you what, no better man for it. I
:16:22. > :16:44.would agree with that. I think he said better. That is the
:16:45. > :16:49.problem, the weight wasn't too bad, he would have made second but didn't
:16:50. > :17:09.get past the front is one and it runs across TBN. -- to the end.
:17:10. > :17:40.The last three ends, 3-1- three from Darren.
:17:41. > :17:51.Great line you are through. Seven shots without reply, there has never
:17:52. > :17:52.been a game like that really, it always looked like a very tight
:17:53. > :18:10.game. Julie is very hard on herself at
:18:11. > :18:13.times, she really is. You get players like that critical of the
:18:14. > :18:37.performance with the do not put every ball on top of the Jack.
:18:38. > :18:46.Harriet Julie. -- Harry gets. I was going to say she would make this
:18:47. > :19:22.harder. To make it more difficult. Katherine has just stepped up a
:19:23. > :19:32.little bit, and the starting to win the battle, just when she needed to.
:19:33. > :19:37.Darren just keeps putting relentless shots into the head.
:19:38. > :20:01.Looks to be carrying some weight. Just wanted to make sure he was
:20:02. > :20:07.arriving. Just the ball kicked away a little bit so he was not on the
:20:08. > :20:12.draw line. Always a yard heavy, will change to the forehand side. I think
:20:13. > :20:18.Alex was playing the percentages there. Catch something and turn the
:20:19. > :20:24.Jack that he is in a lot of trouble if they lose the same. They really
:20:25. > :20:34.will be changing the match. Yu Delu I agree. -- chasing. That would be a
:20:35. > :20:49.tall order. A big bowl coming up from Alex. The cover bowl going into
:20:50. > :21:04.catch into the red one. No conversion shot available. This has
:21:05. > :21:08.to be the perfect draw. The line looks pretty good. Better. Needs to
:21:09. > :21:34.hurry. Will be short. Second bowl. That keeps Alex and Judy just in the
:21:35. > :21:40.final. A big run of shots, 3-1, 3-1 and when you lose two times in a row
:21:41. > :21:46.that is problematic. No one is moving in that crowd, and enjoyable
:21:47. > :21:52.final. A lot of people book a week here at Potters leisure resort where
:21:53. > :21:57.the World Championships are, the problem is they have the book it a
:21:58. > :22:06.year in van sometimes. The next few days are basically just full. -- in
:22:07. > :22:16.advanced -- in advance. Just powering through now, Julie needs a
:22:17. > :22:22.good start. If it heavy there. -- a bit.
:22:23. > :22:31.Almost kicked out into line. I tell you what, if she has the weight this
:22:32. > :22:36.will come back. I would be happy with that. Better off on the wider
:22:37. > :22:47.side than the inside let's put it that way. I agree the inside is
:22:48. > :22:49.always heavier. Katherine saying that awaits so Darren is very happy
:22:50. > :22:56.about it. This is very good. Perfect. She knew it which was
:22:57. > :23:51.equally as important. Try to draw to the ball on the side.
:23:52. > :24:21.The forehand drop for Darren Burnett here. -- draw.
:24:22. > :24:41.He set that up quite nicely. Alex has got to score at least a minimum
:24:42. > :25:04.of two. The bowl and the Jack the trickle of the danger away.
:25:05. > :25:16.Just touching it over might help, that may make a difference. Just the
:25:17. > :25:38.draw Darren. Happy with one down. Turn. That is good. Second prize,
:25:39. > :26:12.well done. Alex is trying to see what way it is
:26:13. > :26:19.possible to try and create another shot out of this and there is a
:26:20. > :26:23.backhand shot to push the bowl onto the green and edge it out of the
:26:24. > :26:28.head but that is tough. He is looking at the forehand draw to try
:26:29. > :26:35.and draw the perfect shot. Maybe score a double. However, whatever he
:26:36. > :26:47.plays it is very difficult. This is a low percentage. Very difficult.
:26:48. > :26:51.Well trying to play the forehand squeeze between his own red bowl and
:26:52. > :26:58.the green bowl. He has given that the real good go with this. Wrong
:26:59. > :27:07.side. Good effort. Three balls within a few inches of the Jack
:27:08. > :27:14.there and really it is just the one. A good measure for the game. Not
:27:15. > :27:20.even playing for the game. A little touch on the green. Our rings are
:27:21. > :28:02.right in You never get them when you need
:28:03. > :28:13.them, Andy. Rarely would you get them in the final end. They would
:28:14. > :28:20.really love to, and this one. They had to try something different in
:28:21. > :28:30.the final end. They may have gone a bit shorter. This will favour Darren
:28:31. > :28:45.and Katherine here. You always get the impression with a short jack
:28:46. > :28:55.length... Julie needs a good opener. Darren has only missed one in this
:28:56. > :29:00.match. That is about I guard down. -- about one yard down. Change onto
:29:01. > :29:09.the forehand, just have to beat that. Is it going to make it?
:29:10. > :29:16.Enough, though. Yes, you didn't think it was as good as that. I
:29:17. > :29:25.think Alex will know himself it is going to be very difficult now.
:29:26. > :29:31.Tighter, tighter, Julie. She cannot afford to be, if she misses the
:29:32. > :29:45.bowl. Yes, good bowl. APPLAUSE
:29:46. > :29:53.Ideally, keep your hand at two feet. Darren is not even worried about the
:29:54. > :29:59.shot. It will be difficulty for that to count, the short red bowl. this
:30:00. > :30:11.is good enough... i think darren is happy with that. -- difficult for
:30:12. > :30:20.that to count. this is impossible for alex, i don't know how he will
:30:21. > :30:32.get it. this looks impossible. He is shaking his head, he knows this is
:30:33. > :30:36.impossible. Looking for the two green bowls with the last delivery.
:30:37. > :30:43.He may try to gamble and take one out now, David. Yes, and if he
:30:44. > :30:49.misses it, they will be shaking hands. I think they are shaking
:30:50. > :30:57.hands now anyway. Yes. The agony. A tough ball. But they have been
:30:58. > :31:00.battling away there, Julie and Katherine, and Darren has played
:31:01. > :31:05.some superb draw shots, no doubt about that. That is what he might
:31:06. > :31:11.do. He has gone for the front one. Yes... Nothing you can do about it.
:31:12. > :31:15.You have been on the other side often enough. He certainly has.
:31:16. > :31:24.Shaking his head there. He knows it has just not been his day. That is
:31:25. > :31:27.what happens in sport. Sometimes you put in your performance and I think
:31:28. > :31:37.it is fair to say Darren and Katherine have been the better
:31:38. > :31:51.player. -- better pair. Having to lose a format here and I just cannot
:31:52. > :31:56.see Alex doing that. -- four here. Alex and Forrest might even just
:31:57. > :32:02.shake their hands here. If it is right in line, no way to get the
:32:03. > :32:15.three out. He doesn't want to group the bowls. Oh, dear, that means
:32:16. > :32:26.there is something wrong. It would be a remarkable shot... Well, I
:32:27. > :32:33.guess the deepest green bowl, if he just nicks that, follows through on
:32:34. > :32:41.pushes the next one in... -- and bushes. A bit of a chat here but I
:32:42. > :32:52.am wondering whether there is a chance of stunning the ball through.
:32:53. > :33:00.Exactly. The green ball goes out there, the other one goes out,
:33:01. > :33:04.brings the two front ones in. But it is hard. But there is a slight
:33:05. > :33:11.chance. It might only way to do it. He can afford to possibly get the
:33:12. > :33:15.quarter bold and then go right through for the green and it needs a
:33:16. > :33:19.lot of weight to get both of them out -- bowled. Then there is much
:33:20. > :33:27.answer of your own ball running away, though. -- there is more
:33:28. > :33:31.chance. He is thinking, do I really want to look at this?
:33:32. > :33:37.LAUGHTER He was going to lift the wrong bowl
:33:38. > :33:47.there, that is how much he is thinking about it! That broke the
:33:48. > :33:50.tension of it. He is still smiling. He knows it is a hard shot but he
:33:51. > :33:59.will have a bash and see what happens. Good, for controlled
:34:00. > :34:02.weight, looking for the front edge, the green one, and I tell you what
:34:03. > :34:07.comedy is very close to the front edge.
:34:08. > :34:18.APPLAUSE -- I tell you what, he is very
:34:19. > :34:25.close. To be fair, and they, the best pair won on the day and I think
:34:26. > :34:32.Julie and Alex will accept that. They just were not the better pair
:34:33. > :34:36.today but Darren Burnett, once again, two pairs titles,
:34:37. > :34:42.unbelievable performance. It was a good battle with Julie and Katherine
:34:43. > :34:47.and she came strong right towards the end, that lovely run, which just
:34:48. > :34:56.killed off the set. It certainly dead. Some great conversion balls
:34:57. > :35:04.from Darren, but a good final, and I deserve it pair. I really enjoyed
:35:05. > :35:08.it. -- deserved pair. A lovely entrance for the pairs, no doubt
:35:09. > :35:15.about that. The people who turned up to watch this final, great friends
:35:16. > :35:18.on the rink and their Alex just got a really bad result and you can see
:35:19. > :35:22.the results on that, but it was Darren doing a lot of damage with
:35:23. > :35:34.his balls, that was the first to go in front. Then Alex Marshall's last
:35:35. > :35:42.bowl, to keep it tight, 7-5. Then Darren Burnett once again drawing
:35:43. > :35:48.the perfect bowl, and we are into the first end of set two. Alex
:35:49. > :35:58.joining the last four four. And what a bowl that was, the shot of the
:35:59. > :36:04.match, for me. -- for four. Once again proving how good he can draw
:36:05. > :36:11.shots. Julie Forrest there, showing her progress in the second bowl
:36:12. > :36:14.draw. And it was Katherine who did a lot of damage in the second part of
:36:15. > :36:21.the second set, beautiful draw shots. And Alex, looking for the
:36:22. > :36:29.front edge of the green one, very close, but took his own bowl out. I
:36:30. > :36:34.think the statue will look a little one-sided in this match just with
:36:35. > :36:41.how things were chasing towards the end, 14-8. It looks very lopsided,
:36:42. > :36:49.that, but to be absolutely truthful, it was a much better game than that,
:36:50. > :36:51.it was a super final. But Darren Burnett and Katherine Rednall were
:36:52. > :37:06.just unbeatable today and they will take the Mixed Pairs Championship
:37:07. > :37:09.for 2016. Many players deflect the attention of mac each other but what
:37:10. > :37:14.I will do is ask you, Darren, how well you think Katherine played
:37:15. > :37:18.today? LAUGHTER
:37:19. > :37:22.She played very well. There were stages where she lost her weight a
:37:23. > :37:25.little and that is the sign of a true champion who can come back
:37:26. > :37:30.strong. It has been a delight to play with her and leading like that,
:37:31. > :37:36.I just had to tidy up behind. Katherine, your turn to tell me how
:37:37. > :37:40.well the man alongside you played? Lost the weight a little bit, yes,
:37:41. > :37:49.but Darren definitely made up for it, bowl to some cracking bowls to
:37:50. > :37:52.make up for it. On your way into Potters this year, what did you
:37:53. > :37:54.touch? LAUGHTER
:37:55. > :37:57.I don't know but I will keep touching it! It could have been a
:37:58. > :38:02.totally different set and we could have been out of it, to be perfectly
:38:03. > :38:14.honest. Even with one bowl to come, you could be the world and it can be
:38:15. > :38:17.magic. I am delighted. Katherine, you won you before. I asked about
:38:18. > :38:28.the difference winning with someone alongside you. What is that like?
:38:29. > :38:31.Mixed pairs, I love it, it is absolutely fantastic. And with
:38:32. > :38:34.Darren alongside me, I think it has been wonderful throughout the
:38:35. > :38:42.tournament. Some fabulous moments of bowls and the second end of the
:38:43. > :38:51.second set, very important? Yes, we were 4-0 down at the time and it was
:38:52. > :39:01.a different set completely, really. Quiet celebrations tonight? Yes,
:39:02. > :39:09.back to uni tomorrow, so yeah. Hope they give you a little leeway
:39:10. > :39:11.tomorrow. Your mixed pairs champions, Katherine Rednall and
:39:12. > :39:18.Darren Burnett! APPLAUSE
:39:19. > :39:21.Ladies and gentlemen it is now wages time and here to make the
:39:22. > :39:26.presentation is the Chief Executive and tournament director along with
:39:27. > :39:36.the director of customer services for retirement.
:39:37. > :39:41.APPLAUSE First, to our runners-up. To receive
:39:42. > :39:51.their runners up check, Julie Forrest and Alex Marshall, MBE!
:39:52. > :40:14.Now to the winners. Receiving a glass goblet each, a cheque and the
:40:15. > :40:14.title, it is Darren Burnett and Katherine Rednall!
:40:15. > :40:45.APPLAUSE Let's hear it for them one more
:40:46. > :40:58.time, ladies and gentlemen, the 2016 World Indoor Mixed Pairs champions,
:40:59. > :41:03.Katherine Rednall and Darren Burnett!
:41:04. > :41:08.APPLAUSE STUDIO:
:41:09. > :41:11.As you heard from Darren in the post match interview, his chances of
:41:12. > :41:16.winning all three trophies here he is eligible for a still very much
:41:17. > :41:20.alive and it is the men's singles we will because treading on now. Let's
:41:21. > :41:30.show you how things are shaping up. This was the end of play last night
:41:31. > :41:34.-- we will be focusing on. Alex Marshall up against Mark Dawes and
:41:35. > :41:45.Alex is of course one of six former champions still left in the last 16
:41:46. > :41:51.of the men's singles. Anderson takes on Mervyn King. Jonathan Ross and
:41:52. > :41:58.David Gourlay and Darren Burnett, the former champion, takes on
:41:59. > :42:02.another in Greg Harlow. But we are concentrating on the match this
:42:03. > :42:07.afternoon between David Gourlay and Jonathan Ross. David Gourlay, 49,
:42:08. > :42:10.has had the most wonderful career so far. He masterminded Scotland's
:42:11. > :42:16.success in the Commonwealth Games a couple of years ago and he won this
:42:17. > :42:26.title in 1986 in Preston and he is trying to make history repeat itself
:42:27. > :42:33.once more. -- 1996. I cannot believe it is 20 years ago since I won this
:42:34. > :42:37.title. I can remember it as if it was yesterday and it is ridiculous
:42:38. > :42:41.where the years have gone. There have been a few semifinals and a
:42:42. > :42:44.final appearance, a lot of first-round exits as well so I am
:42:45. > :42:50.just pleased to get past the first round this year. A great way to
:42:51. > :42:54.spend January, you know, every year, and the competition is heating up
:42:55. > :43:02.now. It is just great to be involved in it. I think this is probably the
:43:03. > :43:07.18th year in a row of coming to Potters, a great venue. World
:43:08. > :43:12.Championships, the best venue in the world. I live in a coastal town
:43:13. > :43:22.which is about half an hour south of Barcelona in Catalonia. For me it is
:43:23. > :43:25.about an eight I've drive so I have been to lots of bowling greens in
:43:26. > :43:29.Spain but at the moment I don't think I play as much as I used to.
:43:30. > :43:35.This is probably my second or third singles game in ten months, so
:43:36. > :43:40.probably not the best preparation, but I came a couple of days earlier
:43:41. > :43:42.than everyone else and put time into the practice so whilst I am probably
:43:43. > :43:46.not the most confident I have ever been I played well in my first game
:43:47. > :43:54.and am looking forward to today. I probably played my best bowls from
:43:55. > :43:59.about 28 to my early 40s, to be honest. I cannot explain that. I can
:44:00. > :44:02.still go out and on any given day play as well as I did then but I
:44:03. > :44:08.think I was probably more consistent then and perhaps I am a little more
:44:09. > :44:12.hesitant now and more, you know, safety conscious, than I was then.
:44:13. > :44:17.Bowls is all about delivery and as you get older you perhaps just lose
:44:18. > :44:20.the bowl, lose a delivery, just don't deliver the same and you need
:44:21. > :44:24.to be consistent every single time and as you get older I think that
:44:25. > :44:30.goes slightly. That is where the flaws start appearing in your game.
:44:31. > :44:33.It is difficult to put a sort of timespan on when you think it is
:44:34. > :44:37.time to call it a day. I do not think I've reached that stage yet
:44:38. > :44:42.but, you know, I think if I drop out the club 16 then I would find it
:44:43. > :44:47.very difficult to qualify back in so that maybe the time, but who knows,
:44:48. > :44:53.you know. As long as I am in the top 16 and can compete and I'm not
:44:54. > :44:57.making a fool of myself I am quite happy. My ambition would be to win
:44:58. > :45:02.this title just once more but it is getting increasingly difficult every
:45:03. > :45:05.year. The standard is getting higher and I am not competing as much as I
:45:06. > :45:12.did and probably the sort of drive and incentive is not there as highly
:45:13. > :45:17.as it used to be, so one more crack at this and one more title would be
:45:18. > :45:22.nice. A wonderful record David Gourlay has compiled over the years
:45:23. > :45:28.but he faces quite a tough test today, against a class player, no
:45:29. > :45:32.doubt, in Jonathan Ross. 42 and represents Scotland and he has been
:45:33. > :45:37.amongst the top 16 for 15 years or more, seeded 11. He has got to the
:45:38. > :45:44.quarterfinals five times and elsewhere he has won gold in
:45:45. > :45:53.championships as well, and he is someone who could provide a bit of a
:45:54. > :45:56.difficult day for David Gourlay. I have always been the quarterfinal
:45:57. > :46:01.man, that is what they keep calling me. I have been beaten quite a lot
:46:02. > :46:07.of times in tie-breaks and quarterfinals. This is the biggest
:46:08. > :46:12.tournament we have, the world WBT. The ground, the atmosphere, it is
:46:13. > :46:17.what you want, a good crowd around you. All of the players really want
:46:18. > :46:20.to get to this. You need a little bit of nerves before every game but
:46:21. > :46:24.I have been here for a long time so I am used to the format and the
:46:25. > :46:28.setup. David is one of the all-time greats and in recent times he has
:46:29. > :46:33.done everything. In the indoor circuit, and he did well for
:46:34. > :46:38.Scotland in the Commonwealth. So it will be tough, obviously, but he is
:46:39. > :46:46.not playing as much now, being based in Spain, so I am not sure how match
:46:47. > :46:49.fit he is, so we will see how it goes Corky has left the factory of
:46:50. > :46:54.the commentary box to come and chat with me. I think he has been in the
:46:55. > :46:57.top 16 for 16 years and he is one of those players who turns up and
:46:58. > :47:01.always firms, very consistent. He has not gone all the way here but
:47:02. > :47:07.you know if you are in the early rounds against him it will be tough.
:47:08. > :47:11.Absolutely. Jonathan has been there since 98, would you believe? In the
:47:12. > :47:14.first couple of years he got enough points and he has now been sitting
:47:15. > :47:19.there for the last 16 years and has not been passed a semifinal. He only
:47:20. > :47:22.made it to a semifinal on two occasion so you have to ask when it
:47:23. > :47:27.will happen. He is more than good enough. What about David Gourlay? As
:47:28. > :47:31.I mentioned before we heard from him, he has been one of the most
:47:32. > :47:35.wonderful players to watch over the years but he also spends his time at
:47:36. > :47:40.helping people, coaching, and he did a great job with Scotland in the
:47:41. > :47:44.Commonwealth Games. Yes, he sold his business and took on a paid role so
:47:45. > :47:47.he had that. One of the best in the world to work with, and he delivered
:47:48. > :47:53.and that is what really counts. The thing about him is six times he has
:47:54. > :48:00.been world number one, won the World Championship 20 years ago. He has
:48:01. > :48:07.been in numerous other finals. Did you play against him? In 96,
:48:08. > :48:10.probably, yes. Yes, and many times myself, but to be truthful, he is a
:48:11. > :48:15.consummate professional, he really is. How do you see this one going
:48:16. > :48:21.today? A lot of people will expect David to come out top but I think it
:48:22. > :48:28.will be tight, personally. It should be. It depends on Jonathan's first
:48:29. > :48:32.two balls. If he gets in it will be a really tight game but if David
:48:33. > :48:37.Gourlay beat him with that, Jonathan Ross's running balls, it is not his
:48:38. > :48:42.game, let's put it that way. Although he can play them very well
:48:43. > :48:47.as the top players can, David's are generally more effective than most.
:48:48. > :48:51.On the success of Darren Burnett and Katherine Rednall, Darren is clearly
:48:52. > :48:55.in wonderful form, and he said how much he looked forward to playing
:48:56. > :49:00.with Katherine this week and it seemed to manifest itself, that joy,
:49:01. > :49:06.it in the ring? I think most people will have been happy to play with
:49:07. > :49:09.Katherine Rednall, because you know you will get, good bowling, and also
:49:10. > :49:13.she is a very calm player. Her and Julie had a decent battle but in the
:49:14. > :49:18.second half of the second set, Katherine really put the fit to the
:49:19. > :49:22.metal and that helped, but Darren was absolutely brilliant. He left
:49:23. > :49:27.Alex on a number of occasions with virtually no shot to play. Darren
:49:28. > :49:32.now has the chance to do what no other player has done here at
:49:33. > :49:40.Potters, the triple Crown, winning the Mixed Pairs, the Pairs, and the
:49:41. > :49:44.Singles title. You think he can do it? Good, he's playing confidently
:49:45. > :49:48.and also he is playing almost every day, which is critical. He doesn't
:49:49. > :49:53.have to worry about practising much because he is getting good, solid
:49:54. > :49:58.matchplay. He is up against Greg in the next match and I think that will
:49:59. > :50:01.be tough. Greg is based here and knows this rink inside out and has
:50:02. > :50:10.the time to practice but, again, he has not had the matchplay for a
:50:11. > :50:14.week. Last year, Robert Paxton's turn, this year, Darren Burnett. Can
:50:15. > :50:23.he do it? Very much so, I think. We will now test Corky's sprinting
:50:24. > :50:29.skills as he tries to make it up to the commentary box in time. Now over
:50:30. > :50:31.to your commentator. Ladies and gentlemen, it is the Irish ace,
:50:32. > :51:06.Jonathan Ross! MUSIC: Don't Stop Me Now
:51:07. > :51:32.by Queen We look forward to an exciting
:51:33. > :51:39.encounter. Don't forget if you have any questions for the team you can
:51:40. > :51:43.send us your Tweets. We will head back to the commentary box, where
:51:44. > :51:52.fortunately Corky has made it back up their in time. And not even out
:51:53. > :51:55.of breath! Hasn't seen a match for so many years and now playing out
:51:56. > :52:09.Scotland, as he has done for half dozen years. Quiet, please, thank
:52:10. > :52:16.you. That is really the key to Jonathan Ross, how he gets in with
:52:17. > :52:23.those first two bowls. 100%, David. You do not want to be forcing your
:52:24. > :52:34.way out of trouble. He is very capable of beating him. Three
:52:35. > :52:40.inches. Well, David Gourlay. He has been around for so long now. But
:52:41. > :52:42.still manages to be very professional in his preparation,
:52:43. > :52:48.does as much as he can. He lives out of Spain, where he is living now,
:52:49. > :53:02.but having said that he puts that I was in. When he gets to events, but
:53:03. > :53:09.definitely a bit rusty in matchplay -- puts the hours in. Playing on the
:53:10. > :53:14.carpet, because of he is living now. It is hard to be sympathetic,
:53:15. > :53:24.though! Walking on the beach twice a day with his little dog. Yes, a hard
:53:25. > :53:31.life for some. He enjoys his red wine, enjoy the sunshine. Stop
:53:32. > :53:35.making me jealous! He says at night it gets cold, but during the day it
:53:36. > :53:42.is still always lovely, even at this time of year. David played well in
:53:43. > :53:56.his opening game, against Smith, he did really well. Yes, GR Smith, as
:53:57. > :54:00.we call him, because there are two or three Gary Smiths around the
:54:01. > :54:10.bowling world, so he is always referred to as GR. Jonathan can play
:54:11. > :54:16.this short and he is very good at it, but everyone coming to this sort
:54:17. > :54:22.of level, you really don't want to be sucked into playing all of the
:54:23. > :54:30.weight shots because that can affect a draw and that is where he really
:54:31. > :54:42.wants to concentrate, the drop shot. He had a quick look, and back again.
:54:43. > :54:52.-- draw shot. Sticking to his forehand, resting the backhand,
:54:53. > :54:56.playing the green ball. They have stopped the clock. Something going
:54:57. > :54:59.on in terms of a little disturbance. Of course the crowd will always go
:55:00. > :55:09.out after a major final, then they will want to come in again. Yes,
:55:10. > :55:15.they have wandered off for comfort break, so the jacket and phone been
:55:16. > :55:22.removed! MOBILE PHONE RINGS Just a bit
:55:23. > :55:38.unsettling... It has not put him off too much, if
:55:39. > :55:44.he catches the bowl. I think he was giving that a little extra, the
:55:45. > :56:06.chance of getting the jack. Just a draw for David here, one down.
:56:07. > :56:20.Is on a good line, all about weight. Great try. Just dropped away, but it
:56:21. > :56:32.might be the shot. Perfect lie, ball in, just... Good stuff.
:56:33. > :56:44.David Gourlay had a stint in Australia a few years ago and played
:56:45. > :56:51.over there. He came back to Scotland for a short period, then decided to
:56:52. > :56:56.stay when he took on the coaching job for Bowls Scotland, Then He
:56:57. > :57:05.Languished That After The Commonwealth Games And Bowls
:57:06. > :57:12.Scotland Probably Advertised, I Suppose, and he got it. He is doing
:57:13. > :57:17.a good job so far, John, getting his team through to the World
:57:18. > :57:23.Championships. So he should, he has Alex Marshall, Paul Foster, Darren
:57:24. > :57:38.Burnett, Neil Spiers, stripped and. A hard job, eh? Being the Scottish
:57:39. > :57:48.manager. Exactly! He will do a good job anyway. He will. Highly
:57:49. > :58:06.respected, a good appointment. Just running through a
:58:07. > :58:25.APPLAUSE It looks better all the way.
:58:26. > :58:40.Both these players using Taylor bowls. A good choice. I thought you
:58:41. > :58:44.might say that. I should let people know that Andy actually works for
:58:45. > :58:50.the company. The two players don't but they are associated with that
:58:51. > :58:59.bowls' company as a number of bowlers are, in different companies.
:59:00. > :59:16.He would normally draw this, because of the gaps involved.
:59:17. > :59:32.Shot bowl coming in. Still good. I don't know whether there is one or
:59:33. > :59:42.two in it. If it is two, he is very unlucky. UMPIRE: MEASURE FOR SHOT.
:59:43. > :59:50.He will be happy with that. Jonathan has a choice here. He can go down
:59:51. > :00:06.the forehand or keep the draw down the back. That's what he is playing.
:00:07. > :00:18.Nice weight if he had made the gap to pull the jack back for three.
:00:19. > :00:23.David doesn't measure unless he thinks he is in with a chance. It is
:00:24. > :00:28.funny how you know players. Jonathan doesn't have a clue about measures.
:00:29. > :00:31.He is right up there with you, Andy. Yes, quite right, too. It has been
:00:32. > :00:43.the same with Jonathan. Openly admits it. A lovely grip on those
:00:44. > :00:47.bowls. I don't want to make this a sales pitch, but they are not
:00:48. > :00:50.available, actually. Special order? Special order, only. Top players
:00:51. > :01:07.only. Jonathan is using an old-style solid
:01:08. > :01:11.Taylor ace, by the looks of them. David, that one looks like an old
:01:12. > :01:15.international style of bowl. It is in fact, it is international. I was
:01:16. > :01:18.going to say, David doesn't measure things unless he thinks he is in
:01:19. > :01:41.with a chance. He has a good eye. St You see the crowd has depleted a
:01:42. > :01:48.little bit after the final. A few comfort breaks going on. They will
:01:49. > :01:51.filter back in again. That's understandable, after an exciting
:01:52. > :01:58.final of two hours in the mixed. You would want a little break. You can
:01:59. > :02:02.understand it. It certainly is a little upsetting for the players
:02:03. > :02:14.when they keep wandering back but most players can adapt.
:02:15. > :02:25.Most players know, especially of this experience. Well, that's not a
:02:26. > :02:26.good opener. Let's look at the bowls. I haven't seen an
:02:27. > :02:41.international for a while. Many manufacturers produce a very
:02:42. > :02:47.big, bending bowl. Well, that's just under the line, will get punished
:02:48. > :02:53.there. Missed the line but probably by just a bowl's width but he will
:02:54. > :02:59.get hammered at the other end. They take pride in their XP, which is a
:03:00. > :03:04.good swinging bowl and Aero and sonic, a lot of people use the
:03:05. > :03:09.groove but sonic is the drawing bowl, like an old traditional Tiger,
:03:10. > :03:23.which is a lovely medium-to-strong biassed bowl.
:03:24. > :03:34.A better line this time. He needs to carry the weight, though. He is
:03:35. > :03:42.under pressure now. UMPIRE: Two green.
:03:43. > :03:51.Surely that's not going to hold. No, he got away with that one. I don't
:03:52. > :03:57.think he has the weight. He probably would have got away with it if wandy
:03:58. > :03:58.was another couple of feet. This will change Jonny on to the
:03:59. > :04:15.backhand. Just a backhand draw. Again, under. Well under. The short
:04:16. > :04:19.length is a very dangerous length, no doubt. Most players are happy
:04:20. > :04:24.going to the T because they can get a nice draw and into the delivery. I
:04:25. > :04:27.think David is quite right, this is more of a testing length.
:04:28. > :04:34.There are holes and gaps, doesn't want to fill the gap between the
:04:35. > :04:44.whole and the outside bowl. No choice now. It looks great down the
:04:45. > :04:49.forehand. He will drive at this. Well, in Jonnies case not a heavy
:04:50. > :04:53.drive, a controlled weight I don't know if it is just a draw. Of course
:04:54. > :04:57.audience coming in. That has upset Jonny. The steward should be
:04:58. > :05:00.controlling this a little bit. I think that's the problem. Not
:05:01. > :05:07.looking to see the player on the mat. There we go. They've sorted
:05:08. > :05:16.themselves out. This is an important bowl.
:05:17. > :05:26.He stuck to the draw. . It was brave. I thought he would have a go
:05:27. > :05:32.at this. Oh, well-played Jonathan Ross. A very good bowl. He played to
:05:33. > :05:36.his strength. I tell you what, not many players would have drawn in for
:05:37. > :05:39.the second. They would have had a go at that. They would have done.
:05:40. > :05:46.Well-played Jonathan Ross. Measure for the shot according to that? No,
:05:47. > :05:50.happy enough. It must have been there if Jonny pushed it out. He
:05:51. > :05:54.always knows. I tease him about it. We played against each other enough
:05:55. > :05:59.over the years to be able to do that. It's strengths and weaknesses.
:06:00. > :06:06.Jonny's strength is playing the game. Which he is very good at.
:06:07. > :06:13.I think it is a testament, actually to Jonathan's lob jeft as well
:06:14. > :06:23.because he rarely loses in the first round. You are right. You are right.
:06:24. > :06:29.- longevity. That's what he needs to do. The
:06:30. > :06:32.ranking system is set up that provided you win every first rounded
:06:33. > :06:39.gym, you will always be in the top 16. That's what happened.
:06:40. > :06:47.He hasn't been in many semifinals. Yes he makes a lot of quarters which
:06:48. > :06:52.builds up the ranking points which he is more than happy with but
:06:53. > :06:55.secretly he would love to get to the WBT final. I'm sure he would. With
:06:56. > :07:05.the length of career he has had. Also, a lot of players don't win the
:07:06. > :07:13.world title, talented players as well. UMPIRE: Short of jack high.
:07:14. > :07:19.Not all players are very successful. Jonny would settle for one of the
:07:20. > :07:20.majors. I'm sure he would. He will settle forral world title here this
:07:21. > :07:32.week. Well-played Jonathan. Again, on the
:07:33. > :08:32.draw. Well, Jonathan playing exactly the
:08:33. > :08:34.same bowl. He has to be a bit careful. He could easily give the
:08:35. > :09:02.shot away here. Well, I think we can understand
:09:03. > :09:05.that, David. Yes. Certainly not a time to leave a shoulder for David
:09:06. > :09:10.gower lay to play through. I don't think he has much chance but to draw
:09:11. > :09:24.this, the way it is sitting. I think that's all that is on. -- Gourlay.
:09:25. > :09:30.There is something not right with this. Jonathan has gone down to play
:09:31. > :09:35.this bowl. I think he is wasting his time. I think I'd take the one. You
:09:36. > :09:40.could always play the backhand and play it safe and hope to just skim
:09:41. > :10:06.the short one. I wouldn't be surprised if this is not too close.
:10:07. > :10:14.Airing on the short side but a good effort. And we are back to nine-end
:10:15. > :10:19.sets for the singles, the second round. Two sets of nine ends with a
:10:20. > :10:57.three-end tie breaks as per normal. Mat up, short jack and the lines
:10:58. > :10:59.will change. Safe enough on the forehand on that width. A good
:11:00. > :12:16.starter. Slightly higher. It is to be under
:12:17. > :12:18.again, I think. Those bowls are kicking in. As we said, a biassed
:12:19. > :12:39.bowl. Jonathan playing the double
:12:40. > :12:43.opportunity shot. A shot and get covered at the same time. Dropping
:12:44. > :12:51.in short. He might make the two. Three, wow. David normally - well,
:12:52. > :12:56.he normally plays this with a forehand runner but a front plant
:12:57. > :13:04.will do damage. Two gone. No reaction from the crowd.
:13:05. > :13:15.It was a good strike. Took two bowls out. A perfect strike. Reduces the
:13:16. > :13:19.count to one. There is the other one spinning away. It also offers up an
:13:20. > :13:31.opportunity for David if Jonathan doesn't get in with this one.
:13:32. > :13:41.Nice line. Well, that struggled to get back. I thought it was better
:13:42. > :13:45.than that. So did I. Goodness me, that did struggle and locked a bowl
:13:46. > :13:47.in as well. David Gourlay may be tempted just to have another little
:13:48. > :14:03.pop at this. Back to the draw. It is not easy the
:14:04. > :14:11.way the red bowl is sitting. Diving away. Happy with one down.
:14:12. > :14:13.UMPIRE: One shot, Jonathan Ross. Well again, down to Jonathan's
:14:14. > :14:22.drawing ability. He got that first one in. Popped another couple in
:14:23. > :14:26.after it to force David into the running bowl. Really, if he can do
:14:27. > :14:36.that, he has a good chance of winning this match.
:14:37. > :14:42.There's only five between these two players in the ranking list.
:14:43. > :14:48.Jonathan, a good finish to the season last year. Popped up to
:14:49. > :15:00.Number 11. APPLAUSE
:15:01. > :15:42.Once again a great opener. David Gourlay has been world number
:15:43. > :15:46.one six times since he won the World Championships in '96. It's been a
:15:47. > :15:52.while since he won a singles event As you said, he has had other
:15:53. > :15:57.commitments. He perhaps has not as much time in on the green as other
:15:58. > :16:03.players do. Managing Scotland and now out in Spain. I think it becomes
:16:04. > :16:08.harder. Well, he is having that life balance, isn't he? Yes, his choice.
:16:09. > :16:17.Jonathan, the best he has been in 2011. You wond -- that was number
:16:18. > :16:23.nine. You wonder why when you see him playing like this. I don't think
:16:24. > :16:26.players are surprised to see him putting bowl close to the jack. It's
:16:27. > :16:31.his strength. It's just when the head is going in the reverse for
:16:32. > :16:32.Jonathan, trying to retrieve the shots, where he finds the greatest
:16:33. > :16:36.difficulty, I think. He can draw all day and give you a
:16:37. > :16:45.hard time. Ye, just putting four bowls within
:16:46. > :17:09.six inches. It looks like number 3 coming in.
:17:10. > :17:13.This is the danger with Jonathan, he will pop away there, draw, draw,
:17:14. > :17:17.draw. The only way to stop that is to force him into playing width
:17:18. > :17:21.shots but you have to beat him to the jack first. As you can see on
:17:22. > :17:26.the screen here, David's opening delivery, about four feet shot,
:17:27. > :17:31.that's creating the problem here. I think he would be running at this.
:17:32. > :17:34.Well two options, he has that forehand runner again to take the
:17:35. > :17:38.two bowls out and that will take that bowl out that way and miss the
:17:39. > :17:43.jack with that. It is not coming coming on to the jack. The
:17:44. > :17:47.alternative is to draw on the backhand and try and drop something
:17:48. > :17:52.in behind the jack, if he can. The way he is looking at this, I think
:17:53. > :17:56.he favours the runner, however, the short bowl is slightly putting him
:17:57. > :18:00.off. He can restrict the damage by taking two out. He did that in the
:18:01. > :18:09.previous end. He was three down and took two bowls out.
:18:10. > :18:16.Oh, he is way under with this one. Well, he is not the first to miss a
:18:17. > :18:24.line on the forehand and certainly won't be the last. No, a difficult
:18:25. > :18:30.timing shot. Well, I wouldn't be surprised if Jonathan just adds
:18:31. > :18:40.another. David would be four down then. A a bit of difficulty there.
:18:41. > :18:45.That front plant is not coming on to the jack. Jonathan will want another
:18:46. > :18:46.one close to the jack. So if two are removed, he at least scores a
:18:47. > :19:00.double. A shade out with that one. Well, he
:19:01. > :19:04.will give him the benefit of the doubt and say he played it there.
:19:05. > :19:11.Looks like David is changing to the draw. Not easy after the running
:19:12. > :19:13.bowl. I thought he would have kept with it, try and take two out and
:19:14. > :19:33.lose a single. He is having a look here. I think he
:19:34. > :19:40.is drawing the shot. Oh, David, what a bowl. Great bowl. That is special.
:19:41. > :19:57.It really is. Fantastic bowl, after the runner. Brilliant, under that
:19:58. > :20:02.sort of pressure. It's been ones all the way but some great draw shots in
:20:03. > :20:05.there. David has been in trouble a few times here. He needs to get
:20:06. > :20:30.first two bowls going. Snr
:20:31. > :20:48.APPLAUSE Judy Potter. Floral today in the
:20:49. > :20:57.jacket. Very colourful. And looking forward to the clotted cream and
:20:58. > :21:03.cerise to arrive, andy, I'm sure it will before the end of the week.
:21:04. > :21:09.Some colours. Does she give you a list of colours before she comes
:21:10. > :21:13.out? I have been reliably informed when the jackets come into the
:21:14. > :21:19.centre, they are brought in by two men in a rack and pushed, not
:21:20. > :21:28.carried. There's that many of them. She looks nice every day.
:21:29. > :21:30.Well-dressed. Very smart. Always, Judy, always. Loves her
:21:31. > :21:53.bowls Well, Jonathan sticking to the draw.
:21:54. > :21:57.Perfect line. UMPIRE: One green. David moving on to the forehand on
:21:58. > :22:02.this. It is quite an accommodating hand, but he has been dipping under.
:22:03. > :22:07.He needs to push the bowls out a bit wider. He is under with this one.
:22:08. > :22:11.Just missing his line there. I think he can afford to take another foot
:22:12. > :22:17.wider. Those bowls are definitely going to come back. I would agree,
:22:18. > :22:24.David. Better than being on the high side.
:22:25. > :22:26.# Awkward this one, for Jonathan. His short bowl is giving him
:22:27. > :22:40.problems. His first weight shot. And he is in
:22:41. > :22:45.the area. Very close, bowl-on-bowl. Does he have the edge? Well, he was
:22:46. > :22:51.really right down that, Andy. Nice weight for it, too. The hard weight.
:22:52. > :22:56.Once again, it was the shot bowl that deflected him away. He had a
:22:57. > :23:09.target. He was right in the meat of the head.
:23:10. > :23:21.David still trying to draw the winner.
:23:22. > :23:28.Only just over. Jonathan only has one bowl in the head. However, I
:23:29. > :23:31.think it will be very lucky to take it away if he plays a similar type
:23:32. > :23:52.of bowl on the backhand. He is under this time. He didn't get
:23:53. > :24:03.into the delivery. It didn't look like he pushed right through it.
:24:04. > :24:09.UMPIRE: One shot, David Gourlay. Set score is 2-5 after seven ends.
:24:10. > :24:15.Well, still more people coming back. They probably will do for the next
:24:16. > :24:20.half an hour. We are moving towards the second set. 5-2. Still the
:24:21. > :24:32.singles there. It gives an indication of how tough a game this
:24:33. > :24:40.is. The theme continues and David Gourlay will take it, if it is two
:24:41. > :24:44.more singles. David will be looking to score a double here to close this
:24:45. > :24:48.set down. This is a shorter length. Changed the tactics. I think that's
:24:49. > :24:50.a good move actually. He needs to hurry with this one. It looks a bit
:24:51. > :25:03.short. The trouble with something like that
:25:04. > :25:06.is, it can get in a way on a short jack length, in particular. And
:25:07. > :25:11.Jonathan could put three or four inside it.
:25:12. > :25:35.It is all about good weight this one.
:25:36. > :25:43.It looks better. Quite interesting what David did there. He moved
:25:44. > :25:48.across on the mat and pushed it out a bit wider. Fair enough. I actually
:25:49. > :25:54.had a quhat with David about the best place for the jack. I won't
:25:55. > :25:58.reveal too much, but I do think he is better off the T. Phone for the
:25:59. > :26:02.fact he has the big-swinging bowls. You are guaranteed to come back. He
:26:03. > :26:07.doesn't have to go searching for tight lines. Which is what Jonathan
:26:08. > :26:12.has done there. Exactly. Now, it is so easy to miss that. The margin of
:26:13. > :26:15.error is minimal. He is probably just a bowl tight and it just whips
:26:16. > :26:29.across. Well, let's see how the weight is
:26:30. > :26:36.first, the line is decent. Very good. He is absolutely guaranteeing
:26:37. > :26:44.to come back centre ring. A better length for David this.
:26:45. > :26:50.Well, I don't think Jonathan will even attempt to draw this. It would
:26:51. > :26:55.be radio great bowl if he did. Well, there is a bit of room to be fair.
:26:56. > :26:59.About four or five inches. He could just draw it. At least make it a
:27:00. > :27:00.little bit better for himself. Most players would be striking at this.
:27:01. > :27:19.He is going for the runner. Not far away but always high. Notice
:27:20. > :27:22.his delivery there at the end of the extension? He tends to pull the
:27:23. > :27:27.final part of the delivery action. He tends to go across the body a
:27:28. > :27:32.bit. But anyway, David Gourlay lying set, so Jonathan is in a bit of
:27:33. > :27:36.trouble here. He might decide to go deep in this I think he is, he is
:27:37. > :27:45.covering the T which covers both spots.
:27:46. > :27:56.I think Jonathan should go again. There is a chance the jack might
:27:57. > :27:59.bounce forward. Is three down, so difficult even to draw the short. No
:28:00. > :28:08.difficulty here if he calls for it again. He has gone for the draw.
:28:09. > :28:23.Well, that is not easy. -- the shot. Very close. It might be second... I
:28:24. > :28:34.don't think Very close. It might be second... I
:28:35. > :28:35.having a look. I tell you what, that will be close, if David is measuring
:28:36. > :28:57.it. Get the umpire out to have a look at
:28:58. > :29:04.it, Sandra McLeish. They need, I think, another one of the chalks to
:29:05. > :29:10.hold that up because as soon as you touch the green ball, the red is
:29:11. > :29:18.moving. Just pop that in there. Absolutely rock-solid no. Yes, just
:29:19. > :29:37.the one. -- now. Good old by Jonathan. It keeps the set going. --
:29:38. > :29:41.good bowl by Jonathan. The trouble with the drive is that even if you
:29:42. > :29:53.hit the target you are not guaranteed scoring the shot, so he
:29:54. > :29:54.probably chose the right shot. Well, Jonathan Ross needs a four to tie
:29:55. > :31:01.the set. That is pretty good. Jonathan has no
:31:02. > :31:07.choice but to just keep drawing on this, trying to develop an
:31:08. > :31:14.opportunity with his last bowl. He has tried to move it with this bowl
:31:15. > :31:23.so if this was off the green, the set would finish. But if it doesn't.
:31:24. > :31:28.It has gone. Maybe just pop another one in, or go deeper. He doesn't
:31:29. > :31:35.need to worry too much about where he is popping one in, just
:31:36. > :31:40.delivering it and walking back. I think he would be wise to think
:31:41. > :31:51.about this now. If he has the jack at the next end. Practising a little
:31:52. > :32:08.runner. Just going to get the edge, maybe. Yes... That bowl has now
:32:09. > :32:12.gone. Would even play the last three bowls. Not many sets go through in
:32:13. > :32:17.singles. I think David Gourlay was good value for that although, having
:32:18. > :32:23.said that, he played a couple of big bowls. He did. A couple of times,
:32:24. > :32:27.David reduce the current so I don't think there was much between them.
:32:28. > :32:46.David was maybe slightly more consistent. -- reduced the count. We
:32:47. > :32:50.are available on Twitter, hashtag bbcbowls. I think we will just
:32:51. > :32:54.gather all the questions together then get Andy in a darkroom so he
:32:55. > :33:00.can do a question and answer session. Will you be in that
:33:01. > :33:05.darkroom with me? Only behind the light! I will have the light on to
:33:06. > :33:11.make sure you feel comfortable. I will need you to help me with the
:33:12. > :33:18.awkward ones. We have had a question earlier today as well about the
:33:19. > :33:26.distance of the bowl. The minimum distance of the bowl, and it travels
:33:27. > :33:35.-- it has the travel, which is 40 metres. The minimum age act-mac has
:33:36. > :33:40.the goal is 23. -- 14 metres. Sometimes the jack comes forward. It
:33:41. > :33:53.does. And that can be too short for it.
:33:54. > :34:01.-- minimum a jack has to go. That is why I need you in that darkroom! I
:34:02. > :34:16.will have to polish off my power's badgers, somewhere in the attic, I
:34:17. > :34:30.think they are -- my umpire's badges. Great start to this set, two
:34:31. > :34:35.great bowls. Second bowl, David, just the draw. With his all, this
:34:36. > :34:42.will be a decent drawing hand, to push them out, let the bias bring
:34:43. > :34:53.the bowl back in, just like that. Perfect. I think that is the shot.
:34:54. > :35:00.It would have been better... It fell in, however not quite sure if it
:35:01. > :35:06.stayed in the area. He may still have it. He really wanted to look
:35:07. > :35:21.solid on the bowl. It would have been completely jammed in there.
:35:22. > :35:55.Once again, he is close. It would be good... Great.
:35:56. > :36:02.APPLAUSE Once you get the edge of the jack,
:36:03. > :36:10.it straightens almost onto the red bowl. Just watch it. Just
:36:11. > :36:16.straightening onto it. That gave him the red bowl out, a minimum ofs,
:36:17. > :36:25.possibly three. I thought it was close. -- a minimum ofs, possibly
:36:26. > :36:28.three. This will be hard. Going for the forehand runner. That little
:36:29. > :36:39.flick at the end and you can see that with his delivery. Just pulling
:36:40. > :36:45.the bowl when he does that. Right through the line. If you look at
:36:46. > :36:48.people like Greg Harlow, they follow through the delivery but Jonathan
:36:49. > :37:10.tends to stop almost halfway through and does not get into the shot.
:37:11. > :37:58.Sometimes you're better to take them while you have them.
:37:59. > :38:59.David is starting to group the balls a bit better now. Asking questions
:39:00. > :39:45.of Jonathan Full. Number three. Jonathan driving and
:39:46. > :39:53.was just put off his weight on this one. It is either a perfect forehand
:39:54. > :39:58.draw or a backhand drive. In this situation, he has run around it. But
:39:59. > :40:03.a damage limitation shot, the percentage shot, is to hope to take
:40:04. > :40:16.two away, perhaps get it on the run-through. He is on the backhand.
:40:17. > :40:25.He must be running at this. That looked a bit better on delivery. A
:40:26. > :40:30.bit on the high side. Took one away. David will have to cover those three
:40:31. > :40:33.just in case. At the same time, his own two balls can go out. Both of
:40:34. > :40:54.them could still go at the head. Past the jack. A massive arena here.
:40:55. > :41:02.When the rink is taken away there is a lovely big Bowling Green
:41:03. > :41:10.underneath. Well played. That is good. Makes it three. But, again, it
:41:11. > :41:17.forces Jonathan into that weight shot. The draw is available but it
:41:18. > :41:21.is a tough one. If he catches a connection here he could get a good
:41:22. > :41:26.result. He could get a very good result. I had the feeling David
:41:27. > :41:31.thought that was behind the jack. Again it is a backhand drive. With a
:41:32. > :41:36.good connection, he could score-mac here. He really whipped across on
:41:37. > :41:41.that one but he is in the area. He is very close. Is he going to get
:41:42. > :41:49.the connection? Unlucky. But he did well. The follow-through may have
:41:50. > :42:57.just pushed the ball onto the jack, so a good try.
:42:58. > :43:12.We have a question from Hassan Jamal who is asking about the full length
:43:13. > :43:28.from T to T. I know you don't like answering, Andy, but have a go. 29
:43:29. > :43:36.and a half? And the T to the ditch? Three metres, top of the class! Keep
:43:37. > :43:39.these easy questions coming! In the meantime, David Gourlay playing a
:43:40. > :43:47.very good second bowl to turn the jack off the red one. A foot away.
:43:48. > :43:53.He keeps looking at this. I wonder if he is tempted to run at this. He
:43:54. > :43:58.is normally an aggressive player early on in the end. He did have a
:43:59. > :44:03.look at it. Is like hesitation. I am sure one or two players may have
:44:04. > :44:09.been tempted with that. Where he is coming to is a good home. David is
:44:10. > :44:11.starting to ask questions now, though, isn't he? Starting to draw
:44:12. > :44:37.quite well. That is good again. A spray chalk
:44:38. > :44:47.goes on to the bowl, indicating it is a touch her, and if that ball
:44:48. > :44:52.runs into the jack, it stays live -- indicating it is a toucher. It is
:44:53. > :44:57.marked as toucher. If it is not, it is removed, and takes no further
:44:58. > :45:04.part. Jonathan going for the runner again this time, staying on the
:45:05. > :45:13.forehand. Close. The jack will go. A good strike, as you say Andy, but
:45:14. > :45:17.the ball was going with that. In the ditch. The nearest green ball was
:45:18. > :45:26.about three metres away. It gives Jonathan the chance. David with his
:45:27. > :45:33.little twitch of the trousers. Before he delivers. All right, very
:45:34. > :45:44.go. The second one. A good routine, yes. Right leg first, then the left
:45:45. > :45:47.leg. -- there we go. He is not superstitious like that but it is a
:45:48. > :45:51.good thing to do in terms of having a little routine so you get yourself
:45:52. > :46:03.absolutely right, and you know you are not hurrying them. A good draw
:46:04. > :46:09.shot, too. -- hurrying then. That did not look good. He is out on a
:46:10. > :46:17.good line, though. I think he has given it a chance. I think he knew
:46:18. > :46:25.it was always under. That was a hard one to beat. Could not afford to go
:46:26. > :46:30.falling into the ditch. We are getting lots of different actions
:46:31. > :46:35.from Jonathan on delivery and whether it is on the draw sometimes
:46:36. > :46:39.or sometimes with a weight shot, you know, it is not consistent. I think
:46:40. > :46:43.the drawing delivery actually is fine. It is just when he starts
:46:44. > :46:47.having to push the delivery action, that is when I think the floors
:46:48. > :46:57.appeared really, and I think he is well aware of that. -- flaws appear.
:46:58. > :47:05.The twitching did not do Alex Higgins any harm! No. It was always
:47:06. > :47:11.quite old the place. He is one of Jonathan's he was, I believe. He was
:47:12. > :47:26.world champion. -- all over the place. One of Jonathan's heroes. He
:47:27. > :47:34.is starting to draw well. See, that is quite a nice action, that, isn't
:47:35. > :47:38.it? That is perfect, absolutely perfect. Rock-solid, and then the
:47:39. > :47:41.result is pretty good as well. Correct. It is just when the
:47:42. > :47:52.pressure gets on when the heavy bowl was really required that the flaws
:47:53. > :47:58.appear. And he knows it. He does. We chat about it every now and again.
:47:59. > :48:01.The good thing is that he does not let it get into his head too much.
:48:02. > :48:21.No. There you go again, rock-solid. Yes,
:48:22. > :48:26.excellent delivery. It gives him a decent chance, with this slightly
:48:27. > :48:52.inside, I think. There it goes, not far away. A good ball.
:48:53. > :49:06.Close, very close. APPLAUSE
:49:07. > :49:16.Get it back first time. Once again, David Gourlay's excellent third ball
:49:17. > :49:21.coming in, drawing the shop. The two back green ones, but if he wants to
:49:22. > :49:25.get the shot of the forehand, and David is very calm they -- shot.
:49:26. > :49:32.Content with the way he is playing at the moment. No change. He will
:49:33. > :49:37.have a quick look. He has plenty of time. A time-out. It gives him a
:49:38. > :49:43.little more time to draw on the backhand, if he wants it. He may not
:49:44. > :49:47.have been going down to play that but, as you say, the ball was
:49:48. > :49:57.following back, so there is room on the backhand draw.
:49:58. > :50:02.Now, has he got the weight? It looks good. Falling back for the shot.
:50:03. > :50:12.APPLAUSE The ball falling out. That created
:50:13. > :50:16.that opportunity. It did. The final delivery coming in, resting the
:50:17. > :50:40.green ball, falling in and getting the shot.
:50:41. > :50:50.David playing the forehand error. I do not know if he was going more for
:50:51. > :50:55.cover instead of getting the shot -- fleeing the forehand there. Giving
:50:56. > :50:59.Jonathan a chance to turn the jack here for three or four. Yes, and I
:51:00. > :51:04.am not sure if I would leave that opportunity available to him. You
:51:05. > :51:17.would think with the movement of the jack, you could score a few. Well,
:51:18. > :51:21.Jonathan, you are running. Good try. A good effort, yes. Another foot or
:51:22. > :51:33.so and he would have made it to turn the jack.
:51:34. > :52:02.A change of length here with Jonathan going long, as expected.
:52:03. > :53:18.Letting the jack stay on the rink. 29 and a half metres.
:53:19. > :53:32.APPLAUSE A longer jack lens and suddenly he
:53:33. > :53:43.is back in the groove again. -- jack length. Yes, two good bowls. David
:53:44. > :53:52.needs to hold peer, swing away. He wants to swing away and doesn't want
:53:53. > :53:57.to cover the front of it. Two... Two red, sorry.
:53:58. > :54:03.LAUGHTER Well done, Dan. Jonathan was getting
:54:04. > :54:25.a bit worried there for a moment! It is dropping, but I don't think
:54:26. > :54:28.that will make any difference. Again, still just the draw for
:54:29. > :55:01.David. Not running again. Well, this is a
:55:02. > :55:10.chance now. Any touch on the jack, he is going to make a four. That
:55:11. > :55:14.would level the scores. Even with a two or a three-year, it will make a
:55:15. > :55:21.massive difference to this set. A bad ball to drop short, Andy. Yes, I
:55:22. > :55:24.don't think when the actual end is in front of you, I don't think
:55:25. > :55:28.Jonathan has scored a lot of the shots in this direction to actually
:55:29. > :55:32.change the length, going away from the commentary. He has tended to
:55:33. > :55:41.lose it in this direction. This could be the third coming in. Just
:55:42. > :55:46.holding out... Yes, four good bowls. I think David will keep trying.
:55:47. > :55:52.holding out... Yes, four good bowls. has played a few could last bowls in
:55:53. > :55:57.this direction, David has. This is important. Important he gets there,
:55:58. > :56:02.just to give it a chance into the pocket. , Once again, this last bowl
:56:03. > :56:07.is going to do the damage. Is he going to hold onto it? He has. A
:56:08. > :56:14.brilliant bowl again from David. Jonathan was just getting a little
:56:15. > :56:20.sniff of a chance. So instead of 5-3, it is 6-1. With the last bowl
:56:21. > :56:29.coming in, just a perfect delivery, following an -- following in for the
:56:30. > :57:28.shot. Taking it away from Jonathan. Somewhere along the line Jonathan is
:57:29. > :58:02.going to have Second set, of course. It's been
:58:03. > :58:10.such a good game. I didn't notice? Time flies when you are enjoying
:58:11. > :58:32.yourself? Another cover bowl going in and this
:58:33. > :58:50.one is better. Difficult for Jonathan now. His
:58:51. > :58:55.problem is the red bowl is short of the green one, so he has to hit it
:58:56. > :58:59.fairly solid to get the connection he is looking for. He will probably
:59:00. > :59:08.try and do it with this one. Needs to move something about, quickly.
:59:09. > :59:17.Very good. And a run through. That's a real bonus. With his own bowl
:59:18. > :59:19.there for the double. And the jack stopped on the red. I thought it was
:59:20. > :59:26.going past A perfect landing bowl. Red with the
:59:27. > :59:31.green, follow through. Just the angle. The jack. We couldn't tell
:59:32. > :59:35.from here but Jonathan probably knew it was stopping on its own bowl.
:59:36. > :59:39.This is very tempting, for David here T looks like a good fore-hand
:59:40. > :59:41.run. Yes, well either side would be good. Just needs to make the
:59:42. > :59:57.contact. He looking at it? Is he going to get
:59:58. > :00:01.the two of them? No, jack up. This is interesting. Going short of the
:00:02. > :00:07.minimum distance. Jonathan has a bowl left. I have a feeling he is
:00:08. > :00:13.going to score. I think so. Even you would score. Be nice. What was the
:00:14. > :00:15.rebounding jack distance? From my memory, 20. 20. I hope you are
:00:16. > :00:25.right. Please don't, guys. That one is well
:00:26. > :00:29.enough up. It is not a problem. I must admit, I don't know the answer
:00:30. > :00:45.to that. Anyway, it is the shot to Jonathan.
:00:46. > :00:52.That wasn't really because he got the shot. It was because it was so
:00:53. > :00:55.short. There was no way he was going to make a mistake there. You are
:00:56. > :01:01.very hard on me, Andy Thompson Well, I do occasionally take a little bit
:01:02. > :01:06.of stick from you. I tell you what, it is not easy out there. I know
:01:07. > :01:11.that. You just like to have a little bit of room. More importantly for
:01:12. > :01:19.Jonathan, he can stretch that jack through. 29.5 m. He has often played
:01:20. > :01:22.this end well but David has come in with one big bowl. You have to keep
:01:23. > :01:35.asking the questions, really. Full length.
:01:36. > :01:41.David would normally win the battle of the first two bowls at this
:01:42. > :01:48.distance. It is a pretty good starter. It is almost like an
:01:49. > :01:54.old-style bowl that Yes, it is a non-gripped bowl. Not many people
:01:55. > :01:58.play with the non-grips. They don't. We don't tend to manufacturer
:01:59. > :02:14.non-grips. They tend to be standard with grips.
:02:15. > :02:20.Lots of different colours of bowls available, throughout the whole
:02:21. > :02:22.spectrum. Some people play with lovely sparkly pink ones. I'm sure
:02:23. > :02:34.they are very pretty. Well, as he say, Andy, picked it up
:02:35. > :02:38.on the way past. Yes, slightly up. But he will be happy with that. I
:02:39. > :02:43.think some people are very brave when they pick up the bright yellow
:02:44. > :02:48.boe.s oh, they show up just a little bit too much for me. If you are
:02:49. > :02:51.having a bad game, it doesn't look good.
:02:52. > :02:58.Now will David get down off that line? Looking good. It needs to
:02:59. > :03:08.stop, though. Just over it. Picked the line out very well. All
:03:09. > :03:12.composite bowls now, of course and we don't use lignum vitae now very
:03:13. > :03:18.often. You can get them remanufactured, but it is usually
:03:19. > :03:21.for the crown green. It was really the choice of wood for many years,
:03:22. > :03:30.especially through the early 19 hundreds. Oh, what happens there?
:03:31. > :03:32.You never know with Jonathan. But just seemed like he pushed it
:03:33. > :03:45.through or something. His weight was good. Line wasn't too
:03:46. > :03:50.bad. Just slightly over T almost looked like he tripped on delivery.
:03:51. > :03:52.Here you go, everything looks OK. Oh, well, there we go, something is
:03:53. > :04:25.not right. Well, that's very unlike David
:04:26. > :04:29.gowerly. The old wooden bowls were great, lovely looking things but
:04:30. > :04:31.unfortunately they were just not that good on the indoor carpets, in
:04:32. > :04:53.particular. Just too big a draw. Well, problems now for David
:04:54. > :04:57.gowerly. He doesn't want to leave the double here. May take a chance
:04:58. > :05:02.on a runner, just to take one away. There is a little punch shot on the
:05:03. > :05:06.forehand that will see this shot coming in. Look at the angle. Well,
:05:07. > :05:12.the angle is going to the red ball, so it is not worth T A backhand
:05:13. > :05:15.runner doesn't look too bad here. Looks pretty good to me. -- not
:05:16. > :05:23.worth it. It is all to do with where it is
:05:24. > :05:27.sitting. That is he a all. He will come through on it. I think it is
:05:28. > :05:32.worth trying to take that bowl out. If he goes on to that, it'll go on
:05:33. > :05:36.the respot. If that's the case it'll go in this direction. Great value to
:05:37. > :05:41.him. But I think it is worth playing to it. A good shot on here. I think
:05:42. > :05:46.probably two-thirds. No danger of him taking his own two bowls out.
:05:47. > :05:50.Looking at the forehand, I can't see much value in the forehand. Looks a
:05:51. > :05:53.backhand shot here, David. The trouble with forehand, I think the
:05:54. > :06:00.jack is springing over to the red bowl. He has a short bowl, slightly
:06:01. > :06:04.in the way. He is playing the back - oh no, make up your mind, David.
:06:05. > :06:08.There you go, plenty of timeouts. Just use them. This is an important
:06:09. > :06:13.bowl. 6-4 with two ends to go, brings Jonathan right back into
:06:14. > :06:15.this. Whereas, if he takes one away, you know, it's an awful lot better
:06:16. > :06:20.form. . I don't think that's what I would
:06:21. > :06:38.have played. You make your choice. Still going to be 2-down. I'm not
:06:39. > :06:43.sure about that shot. I can understand why he played t but he
:06:44. > :06:47.has such a good running bowl available to him in his armoury just
:06:48. > :06:52.one-off and Jonathan would have been in a bit of bother. -- Well 6-4,
:06:53. > :06:59.Jonathan back in the game. He needs to score the final two ends to make
:07:00. > :07:04.this into a tie-break. First two of the match for Jonathan Ross. He
:07:05. > :07:09.scored four singles prior to that. Bearing in mind we have played 16
:07:10. > :07:13.ends and he has won five of them. He has been better than five ends, I
:07:14. > :07:17.think. I think he has. I don't think he has had the opportunity playing a
:07:18. > :07:23.full length jack in this direction too often. So this might be
:07:24. > :08:05.interesting. David has tended to dominate.
:08:06. > :08:18.It looks good, a few feet away. Interesting to see how this goes
:08:19. > :08:22.here. If David holds his nerve, scores a single, Jonathan will be in
:08:23. > :08:25.a heap of trouble going into the last end. As I say, basically
:08:26. > :08:27.Jonathan needs to score both ends, too, to have a chance of winning
:08:28. > :08:39.this set. This looks under. If he has extra weight he will hold.
:08:40. > :08:44.I think the weight was good to get close to jack-high but we needed an
:08:45. > :08:47.extra foot or two on it. He is in a heap of trouble now, Jonathan.
:08:48. > :08:52.Interesting choice for David on to the forehand.
:08:53. > :08:58.Not sure about that. If he had tapped his own bowl down, it would
:08:59. > :09:04.have been very, very good. Still, he has played a good bowl. Two
:09:05. > :09:07.excellent bowls. That'll force Jonathan right into the running in
:09:08. > :09:12.the forehand to try to disturb something. Unless he fancies the
:09:13. > :09:16.draw to within an inch? Well, I wouldn't think so.
:09:17. > :09:29.He needs it start this end again, I think t hit the head. -- -- I think.
:09:30. > :09:32.Hit the head. Well, sticking to his strength, the draw. This is not
:09:33. > :09:48.going to be easy. This is coming now, though. It is a
:09:49. > :09:54.good bowl, I have to say, but it is locking in the green one. Well, here
:09:55. > :10:00.we go, Jonathan's third delivery. He needed the bowl. Rested the jack but
:10:01. > :10:09.still 1-down in an end he needs to score.
:10:10. > :10:17.David could set up an opportunity to win the game here. He is playing a
:10:18. > :10:21.blocker. A clever shot. I don't think that's worked though. A good
:10:22. > :10:26.shot to play but I have a feeling it is just a little bit on the wide
:10:27. > :10:28.side. I think so. It is a shot not played too often by the players,
:10:29. > :10:38.blocking the draw. Probably a better shot now, Andy,
:10:39. > :10:43.where the hands aren't swinging just enough. UMPIRE: Two timeouts
:10:44. > :10:47.remaining. This doesn't look easy for Jonathan. This is a tough one,
:10:48. > :10:52.it really is. He had to filter through. Make contact with the jack,
:10:53. > :11:00.as he did last time. And hope he gets two.
:11:01. > :11:06.Once again, sticking to the draw. Well, he is on a good line here. I
:11:07. > :11:13.tell you what, he has given this a go. Will he bend? Oh, just over the
:11:14. > :11:17.weight. He had to give it a chance, Andy. I can't blame him for that. It
:11:18. > :11:24.was very close. Very, very close. He couldn't afford to be short, so, he
:11:25. > :11:28.played it exactly the right way. UMPIRE: One shot, David Gourlay.
:11:29. > :11:34.David, not even attempting to play it. Happy enough, taking the single
:11:35. > :11:46.going into the last end where David needs four.
:11:47. > :12:11.Well, David just went up to retrieve his own bowl.
:12:12. > :12:37.Back in action again. No shot clock for the first delivery. 26 m.
:12:38. > :12:41.Snr medium length, 26 m, David trying to encourage this ball
:12:42. > :12:49.forward. He doesn't really want to be short. Ah, it is a good opener.
:12:50. > :13:06.Jonathan is just the sort of mecurial player that could put four
:13:07. > :13:10.inside that. He certainly could but unfortunately his opening delivery
:13:11. > :13:14.is a poor one. Well under it. It is not like him on his forehand to do
:13:15. > :13:33.that. He is normally very consistent.
:13:34. > :13:37.That is a closer one. Jonathan will have to try to stretch that jack
:13:38. > :13:45.through now. Well, Jonathan is getting forced
:13:46. > :13:50.into playing shots that are so difficult. The extra weight will
:13:51. > :13:57.hold. Now will he have the cover shots going? David Gourlay, just put
:13:58. > :14:05.a back bowl in now. The backhand, split the two reds. Yes, and game
:14:06. > :14:09.over then. This is why it is just so difficult not final end to score the
:14:10. > :14:10.fourth. Players just go for cover. Now, David what are you doing with
:14:11. > :14:23.this one? I I think he is just going to make
:14:24. > :14:27.it. Got away with that. He he needed to be wider. You can tell by the
:14:28. > :14:33.body language that was a rare mistake on the line for David.
:14:34. > :14:47.Although it is possible, to be lying a three, after this.
:14:48. > :14:54.Well, looks like it is just going to come across again. It is going to
:14:55. > :14:57.free him the jack but that isn't going to make any difference. David
:14:58. > :15:01.is right in the middle of the triangle of red bowls. The little
:15:02. > :15:05.red bowl underneath. You cannot see it at the moment. The bottom of the
:15:06. > :15:13.picture. But there is a red one down there. David could put this
:15:14. > :15:17.anywhere. There is not a four here. No, he can pop another one in and
:15:18. > :15:19.Jonathan will force the jack through and hope for a result but I can't
:15:20. > :15:26.see it That will go inside and go deeper.
:15:27. > :15:39.Well-covered. Chalk gun on that and taken away as
:15:40. > :15:46.the marker. I think Jonathan knows there is no
:15:47. > :15:50.hope here of scoring a four. The look on his face, he knows.
:15:51. > :15:56.The second round, World Championships for Jonathan Ross.
:15:57. > :16:09.He is under. UMPIRE: Two shots, second set and match, David Gourlay.
:16:10. > :16:14.Well, a very professional performance by David Gourlay. Yes,
:16:15. > :16:18.David played well. He played well in patches. I think he got better as
:16:19. > :16:22.the game went on. David always a dangerous player but I think he was
:16:23. > :16:28.the better of the two players Just a bit more consistent. He did play the
:16:29. > :16:34.big bowls. That's the important bit. But won the seven, two in the first
:16:35. > :16:38.set, 9-4 in the second. It looked like a great performance from David
:16:39. > :16:42.Gourlay. Because Jonathan Ross is dangerous but he restricted him to
:16:43. > :16:46.six shots in that match and to be honest with you, it is Jonathan
:16:47. > :16:51.Ross, only scored in five ends. Yes, probably a bit unfair in the
:16:52. > :16:55.score, really. Jonathan was lying a couple of threes and David came in
:16:56. > :17:06.and got the second shot. Unfair, however David was the better player.
:17:07. > :17:16.He likes a nod to the supporters. Doesn't too too much of the waving.
:17:17. > :17:19.He likes a no.d first end, first set, David Gourlay, three down,
:17:20. > :17:22.draws the perfect shot. Moving on to the second set, again, first end,
:17:23. > :17:29.turning the jack around the corner for three.
:17:30. > :17:33.That got him off to a great start. Jonathan, showing that he hadn't
:17:34. > :17:40.given up on the bowl, drops in for the single. And David Gourlay
:17:41. > :17:43.showing how good he is, when it comes to the saving bowl. Last
:17:44. > :17:48.delivery, draws the shot with two against him. But again, we can see
:17:49. > :17:53.Jonathan, you know, he is getting the touchers, the bowls on the jack
:17:54. > :17:56.but David Gourlay was just too consistent, banging bowl in, after
:17:57. > :18:01.bowl, just to make it difficult for Jonathan. So, it's the Scot, David
:18:02. > :18:06.Gourlay, through to the quarter-finals. I have to say, he
:18:07. > :18:11.was good value for T not pushed to the limit by any means, but, at the
:18:12. > :18:15.same time he was stretched. Ends 1, a bit unfair, 13-5. The same with
:18:16. > :18:19.the total shots scored. I think Jonathan was better than that. He
:18:20. > :18:23.really was but look at the touchers, 11 for David Gourlay. A very, very
:18:24. > :18:26.good winner. I tell you, what last year's semifinal. This year he is
:18:27. > :18:33.through to the quarter-final. He is looking dangerous.
:18:34. > :18:39.7-2, 9-4 the score. But there wasn't that much of a discrepancy between
:18:40. > :18:40.the two of you. Did you feel it was much closer?
:18:41. > :18:41.that much of a discrepancy between the two of you. Did you feel it was
:18:42. > :18:45.much closer? I don't think there was that much in
:18:46. > :18:50.it. David on three or four occasions played it with his last bowl and was
:18:51. > :18:55.lying three. But he played the bowl when he needed to. His consistency
:18:56. > :19:00.was what eventually wore you down in the end. David you seemed to be
:19:01. > :19:05.hitting your stride from early on in the match, have you been feeling in
:19:06. > :19:09.good nick? Yes, obviously once you get past the first round you feel
:19:10. > :19:12.you are in the competition. It is difficult coming out after a big
:19:13. > :19:16.final because the atmosphere dies a bit. There were a few hairy moments
:19:17. > :19:21.in the first set. There were one or two important moments in the match
:19:22. > :19:23.for you. We will look at them now. Let's look at set 2, end 5. You
:19:24. > :19:30.produced this Jonny was through, possibly three
:19:31. > :19:35.shots. Missed with my first three bowls. You are under a bit of
:19:36. > :19:40.pressure. Thankfully I managed to pull it out of the bag at the end.
:19:41. > :19:43.When we talk about, a lot of people talk about getting the first two
:19:44. > :19:47.bowls in and how important those are. It is every single bowl you
:19:48. > :19:52.deliver at this level, you cannot afford at that take one lightly
:19:53. > :19:55.Certainly I felt, coming this way in particulars I was struggling with
:19:56. > :20:00.his first two bowls and Jonny was nailing it and I was putting immense
:20:01. > :20:05.pressure on myself. Going the other way I was getting it in. Looking
:20:06. > :20:09.forward to the quarter finals and the way the draw developing a few
:20:10. > :20:13.big names went out early on. Does that make any difference to the way
:20:14. > :20:16.you look at the tournament as an overall thing? To be honest, you
:20:17. > :20:20.come into the compo particulars everyone is looking at Paul and Alex
:20:21. > :20:24.and seeing how they are performing. Paul had a Titanic struggle in his
:20:25. > :20:29.first game and just lost on a tie-break. So that kind of maybe
:20:30. > :20:33.opened that section up a little bit but all the qualifiers are playing
:20:34. > :20:37.superb this way and there is a long, long way to go. There is. Thank you
:20:38. > :20:41.very much. Commiserations for today. David, congratulations. Once again,
:20:42. > :20:45.I think it might have been for the 100th time you are through to the
:20:46. > :20:49.quarter-finals here at potters in the singles of the competition. So
:20:50. > :20:52.David Gourlay through to the quarter-finals, congratulations to
:20:53. > :20:57.him. But we'll look at the match that took place this morning. It was
:20:58. > :21:01.in the singles as well. It featured a man had celebrated his 41st
:21:02. > :21:05.birthday yesterday, Mark Royal. He is a man had has been to the
:21:06. > :21:11.semifinals here in 2011 and seeded number 13. If you look at Mark's
:21:12. > :21:20.achievement, he has also won the Welsh International Open in 2008 and
:21:21. > :21:27.the National Mixed Pairs in 2008. His opponent was a player, Robert
:21:28. > :21:33.Paxton who had a great achievement in 2015. He got to the quarter
:21:34. > :21:36.finals here 12 months ago and been to the semifinals on three
:21:37. > :21:40.occasions: He won the Scottish International Open in 20011. The
:21:41. > :21:45.first set went to Mark Royal narrowly. He took it 7-6. Actually
:21:46. > :21:49.with the final bowl of the first set. We will join it in the second
:21:50. > :21:55.set. The score 19-5, at this stage to Robert Paxton. In the commentary
:21:56. > :22:11.box, alongside David Corkhill Sol Greg Harlow. -- is Greg Harlow.
:22:12. > :22:24.A good first bowl. He would like to win the end. But it if he is going
:22:25. > :22:26.to lose it, he'd like to lose a single. But he has a good first
:22:27. > :23:03.bowl. This would normally get the
:23:04. > :23:20.treatment. Backhand. Or backhand runner. Looks
:23:21. > :23:25.wide, doesn't it? He does indeed. This is' not a good connection.
:23:26. > :23:29.That's really not going to help him. It has gone outside the confines of
:23:30. > :23:43.the rink. It'll go on the respot. It is going to favour green.
:23:44. > :23:51.Well, Robert is going to be in a position to put the pressure on
:23:52. > :23:54.here. Both players, two bowls each. I think the best that Mark can do in
:23:55. > :24:15.this end will probably be a single. Very good. Very good indeed. The
:24:16. > :24:31.players practise from the respot, of course.
:24:32. > :24:48.This looks under. Yes, just starting to peel away. It wasn't too bad for
:24:49. > :24:55.line. But it is a set lie against. I think I'd just go deep if I was Rob
:24:56. > :25:00.now, to be honest. Just leave it. I think I would just go deep. He only
:25:01. > :25:13.needs the one to win the set. He has a great one on top.
:25:14. > :25:22.He has gone for the draw. He doesn't want to open the jack up. It's been
:25:23. > :25:26.OK. Well, doesn't leave much of an option here. It'll be a hard one to
:25:27. > :25:30.draw. But two bowls are available, if he wants to drive them out. I
:25:31. > :25:35.think he's going to have to play that. I just wonder now whether the
:25:36. > :25:39.jack is available it trail a couple of yards for two?
:25:40. > :25:44.He might also be thinking - one's probably not enough. UMPIRE: Timeout
:25:45. > :25:49.called. Perfect timing shot around the
:25:50. > :26:10.front, green. Turn the jack for two. He couldn't see the jack from the
:26:11. > :26:19.mat but he knows where it is. He is calling it to get down. Here it
:26:20. > :26:22.comes. UMPIRE: Three shots, second set, Paxton, match tie-break.
:26:23. > :26:25.Well, three shots going to make it look a lot worse than what it really
:26:26. > :26:34.was. Ye, 12-5. Robert Paxton playing
:26:35. > :26:43.really well. UMPIRE: He won the toss, the jack to Robert. The second
:26:44. > :26:47.set, from 5-2 down, to 2-5. You wouldn't have put money on that
:26:48. > :26:51.scoreline but as you said Robert was very good from 5-2 down and Mark
:26:52. > :26:56.lost his way a little bit. He didn't draw at his best and left himself in
:26:57. > :26:58.some awkward positions. But all that will be forgotten now. It is the
:26:59. > :27:18.first player to win two ends. The tie-break ends always seem to be
:27:19. > :27:23.played differently as well, don't they? We are in a situation where a
:27:24. > :27:27.single shot is all that is required. There are no accumulated shots. Of
:27:28. > :27:31.course we get to the third end and the tie-break, it can be destroyed
:27:32. > :27:38.and replayed again, but you have to nominate it. You can nominate as
:27:39. > :27:39.often as you wish but you can only destroy it once. That applies to
:27:40. > :27:50.both players. Good opening bowl here. Mark getting
:27:51. > :27:57.right up and tight. Still a bit of room. UMPIRE: Gap on the last bowl,
:27:58. > :28:03.seven inches. That's enough, seven inches, to slide a bowl in.
:28:04. > :28:13.! Robert certainly made an adjustment. It looks very good. Oh,
:28:14. > :28:18.he is close with this. Yes, a great bowl. Great bowl. Well, he knew
:28:19. > :28:25.there was seven inches to draw the shot. He made it look easy. Right on
:28:26. > :28:29.the jack, Mark might be tempted to run at this to open it up. Very,
:28:30. > :28:35.very hard bowl to draw off the way it is sitting. It is just going to
:28:36. > :28:36.reach off his backhand and try and swing back into the bowl and the
:28:37. > :28:53.jack. He is on narrow It will start to kick back. A good
:28:54. > :28:58.bowl, there. I think he has the attack with the next one, though.
:28:59. > :29:03.Even if he moves his own red bowl. What is he doing? I think Robert has
:29:04. > :29:12.to move another one end, draw from another close bowl. He will not want
:29:13. > :29:28.to tap it. Does not want to open that jack up.
:29:29. > :29:39.Very good. A good ball. Drawing back in, two now. Mark is going to have
:29:40. > :29:46.to attack this, can't see any guarantee of getting the shot.
:29:47. > :29:54.Unless he moves it. Looking for his own red bowl, into the jack. He is
:29:55. > :29:59.certainly into something. What is he going to get and how is he going to
:30:00. > :30:06.get it? He wanted it solid. Just locked on the back bowl. But it has
:30:07. > :30:11.helped, he has opened the gap between the jack and the bowl to
:30:12. > :30:21.about five or six inches, but it could have been so much better if he
:30:22. > :30:24.had got the bowl onto the jack. Yes, Rob's decision now, does he try a
:30:25. > :30:33.better shot or try to cover the spot. That will be hard to get to,
:30:34. > :30:41.Greg. He still has that front projector. Although the same bowl by
:30:42. > :30:46.Mark will be very close and, as you say, it is down to choice. Is he
:30:47. > :31:05.prepared to leave that 56 inches and draw the short? -- five or six.
:31:06. > :31:15.No, he is looking to try and draw number one. A bit of work to do. Now
:31:16. > :31:22.Mark has the thing about this, that planned going away, so it will not
:31:23. > :31:32.help with the runner. Just the draw, David. It will be a tough one to get
:31:33. > :31:36.that jack into the right position. He probably has about two or three
:31:37. > :31:46.inches to draw the shot and win the first tie-break end. Harry is the
:31:47. > :31:50.call from Mark. He is struggling for weight, that is the problem. Dropped
:31:51. > :32:12.it low. APPLAUSE
:32:13. > :32:18.Robert Paxton has won the end against the bowls, such as big. The
:32:19. > :32:26.last one was in favour of Mark and now he is in position of having last
:32:27. > :32:31.bowl. He put away the disappointment at the last end of the first set.
:32:32. > :32:42.Robert Paxton came back strong on the second. As you say, with last
:32:43. > :32:45.bowl on this end, he is probably now favourite. A slight favourite, as it
:32:46. > :33:14.is. Both players making sure they are
:33:15. > :33:23.arriving, and that is good to see, because they are in trouble. It will
:33:24. > :33:29.be a very attacking end. Mark plays the shot, but the head is not in his
:33:30. > :33:31.favour. Again, a positive draw, turning his own red into a better
:33:32. > :33:49.position or else just turning the jack.
:33:50. > :33:58.Two bowls or jack, hits it solid, could run right into the ditch with
:33:59. > :34:05.it. Solid jack, there he goes, and he will go in after this. Will he
:34:06. > :34:10.make the ditch? He has just dropped in, a little bit of a distance but
:34:11. > :34:14.that will not be easy to beat. The front bowls are probably in the way
:34:15. > :34:23.to go across the green to it. They difficult. Well, I don't think Mark
:34:24. > :34:26.can hold his bowl up enough on the narrow side. It is a straight line
:34:27. > :34:36.bowl and it is his backhand so he can play across the line, push it
:34:37. > :34:39.out really wide. He has to give it a chance because he might as well fall
:34:40. > :34:48.in the ditch rather than being two short. That is just peeling away,
:34:49. > :34:58.towards the end, not sure if that is enough. Well, Alan Thornhill thinks
:34:59. > :35:11.it is one red, and he has done well to get there.
:35:12. > :35:22.Yes, Robert, you need to hurry. Good enough. He has done well. Great
:35:23. > :35:26.bowl. He did very well. Lewis, strong fast bowl like that. He must
:35:27. > :35:36.have been right on the edge of the mat. -- loose. That was a great
:35:37. > :35:41.bowl. You would think it would struggle to get there but that was a
:35:42. > :35:52.great bowl. A matchwinner. I think Mark will probably try to push this
:35:53. > :36:02.in. Very tough to beat, on the draw. We will be able to tell by the line.
:36:03. > :36:07.Yes, a narrow line. He is looking to push the green one into the ditch.
:36:08. > :36:12.Well, he is interested. It must be very close. He has got it on.
:36:13. > :36:33.Tremendous bowl. He played it with very careful weight, with a hard
:36:34. > :36:35.weight. OK, one bowl here now for Rob. I think he enjoyed that. Quiet,
:36:36. > :36:51.please. Can he do it again? He is on the
:36:52. > :36:55.same road. Looks good enough. He is chasing it. Has he got the weight,
:36:56. > :37:09.that's a question? Has he got the weight? He has. The match to Robert
:37:10. > :37:16.Paxton. . It was a very good game, no doubt about that. Disappointment,
:37:17. > :37:27.losing at three. To lose it 7-6, came back strong in the second, 12 -
:37:28. > :37:30.five, and won the tie-break, 2-0. STUDIO: Superb stuff from Robert
:37:31. > :37:34.Paxton which means he is through to the quarterfinals. Also through,
:37:35. > :37:39.David Gourlay, and use that match earlier today. There are still some
:37:40. > :37:49.formidable names left in the draw. The lakes of Alex Marshall, Stewart
:37:50. > :37:57.Anderson. Nicky Brett down at the bottom and Greg Harlow. David
:37:58. > :38:02.Corkill is alongside me. Robert Paxton had a tremendous time of last
:38:03. > :38:05.year. I suppose without having the distraction of the other two events
:38:06. > :38:10.he would feel he has a big chance this time around? Absolutely. He was
:38:11. > :38:13.pushed all the way today and Mark Royal, a very good player, he will
:38:14. > :38:20.be delighted to get over that hurdle. It is lovely to win the
:38:21. > :38:25.pairs but he was disappointed last year he did not continue that form
:38:26. > :38:31.into the singles. David Gourlay has been there, but admittedly the world
:38:32. > :38:34.title came a while ago. Corky, is he in the type of form that will get
:38:35. > :38:39.him back on the top again? I think he is. I think he is playing his way
:38:40. > :38:43.back into the turn it, but just lacking that match practice and that
:38:44. > :38:46.is the problem. You need that. Is that because he has been distracted
:38:47. > :38:49.by all of the other things he has been doing, helping Scotland in the
:38:50. > :38:54.Commonwealth Games couple of years ago etc? Up to a point, but last
:38:55. > :38:58.year in the semifinal he really should have got through the match,
:38:59. > :39:02.but this year, he is living in Spain and that is much of a bigger
:39:03. > :39:09.problem. Having said that, I think he is good enough. Darren Burnett
:39:10. > :39:13.wanting to ignite when here for the second time but this time alongside
:39:14. > :39:19.Katherine Rednall, who was your two years ago. Yes, she was, and she is
:39:20. > :39:25.very comfortable here, but Stewart was superb, he really was, and he
:39:26. > :39:31.will carry that into the singles. -- Darren was superb. In the second set
:39:32. > :39:35.she lifted her game. Yes, in the second set in particular, putting a
:39:36. > :39:38.lot of good bowls in and forcing people to play different types of
:39:39. > :39:42.shots. It is imported when you have you read coming in with good bowls
:39:43. > :39:48.that you can build on it. That front bowl in there. Darren was just
:39:49. > :39:53.absolutely wonderful, he really was. Hanging bowls in time and time
:39:54. > :39:58.again. We spoke about Robert Paxton winning two titles last year then
:39:59. > :40:04.coming up short in the singles. Paul Foster, Alex Marshall, they have won
:40:05. > :40:08.two out of three and Darren has won two out of two so far. What are his
:40:09. > :40:12.chances? Probably has the best chance in the form he is in at the
:40:13. > :40:16.moment. If he continues the way he is playing he will be very hard to
:40:17. > :40:22.beat. We will just tell you about what is coming up on the BBC bowls
:40:23. > :40:26.wise in the next 24 hours or so. Highlights on BBC Two at five past
:40:27. > :40:30.midnight in England and Wales and then half an hour later we are on in
:40:31. > :40:36.Scotland with action from all of the day's matches, then back on the red
:40:37. > :40:39.button from 10am for a cracking account between two former world
:40:40. > :40:50.champions, Mervyn King and Stewart and is in. Then 1pm on BBC Two. --
:40:51. > :40:55.Stewart Anderson. Mark Dawes and Alex Marshall, 1pm on BBC Two
:40:56. > :40:59.tomorrow. That is just about it for today's coverage today at Potters.
:41:00. > :41:02.Darren Burnett as we highlighted at the start had a unique opportunity
:41:03. > :41:07.to win his second trophy in 24 hours and that is exactly what he did, in
:41:08. > :41:11.the company of Katherine Rednall. He now has a chance of winning all
:41:12. > :41:54.three. From all of us here at Potters, take it easy.
:41:55. > :42:01.This is Flog It! and today I'm in Bodmin in Cornwall,
:42:02. > :42:05.where it's said there's at least one mysterious beast prowling around.
:42:06. > :42:10.I think it's time for our experts to sharpen their claws.
