:00:10. > :00:41.Hello, welcome to highlight of the 17th world amateur boxing

:00:42. > :00:47.Championships, which took place in Kazakhstan. It was a huge event, 500

:00:48. > :00:51.fighters taking part. It is the first time the best in the world

:00:52. > :00:52.have come together since we experienced the colour and drama of

:00:53. > :01:22.the London Olympics. The 10,000 crowd raising the decibel

:01:23. > :01:32.level. You have got to work, come on! Do you want it? Do you want to

:01:33. > :01:36.get on the podium? Which boxer can find the moment of inspiration? It

:01:37. > :01:43.is going to be close. Utterly committed, utterly competitive. This

:01:44. > :01:48.is going to be a nail-biting last second. What a finish. He has raised

:01:49. > :02:00.the status of world amateur. Yes, great memories, and successful

:02:01. > :02:06.for Britain, three gold medals. One of my guests got a bronze medal. We

:02:07. > :02:13.are also joined by the only British rider to get a gold medal at these

:02:14. > :02:21.championships. Back in 2007 in Chicago. And we could not do without

:02:22. > :02:40.a boxing journalist, aficionado and General Noble.

:02:41. > :02:40.a boxing journalist, aficionado and where the medals have gone between

:02:41. > :02:47.1974 and 2011. The World Championships is tougher. It is

:02:48. > :02:52.1974 and 2011. The World that simple to explain, they started

:02:53. > :02:56.in Havana, and the first medal won by a country

:02:57. > :02:56.in Havana, and the first medal won in 1999, so we went 12 tournaments

:02:57. > :03:00.without getting in 1999, so we went 12 tournaments

:03:01. > :03:07.medal. We would send fighters and we in 1999, so we went 12 tournaments

:03:08. > :03:08.would get out of in 1999, so we went 12 tournaments

:03:09. > :03:14.The first couple of tournaments, we did not send teams, because what was

:03:15. > :03:19.the point? They were fighting professionals from East Germany,

:03:20. > :03:25.Russia, Cuba, and getting smashed. If you look at the 70s and 80s, the

:03:26. > :03:30.statistics are staggering. Some of our best fighters were lucky to win

:03:31. > :03:35.once or twice. We have turned it around since 1999, so that table

:03:36. > :03:44.only reflects the last 12 years. Is it still a fair reflection? Slightly

:03:45. > :03:50.less so. Cuba have been affected in the last 15 years by defections.

:03:51. > :03:55.Boxing was banned by Fidel Castro in 1962, there were some defections in

:03:56. > :04:02.the 70s and 80s, but there have been some massive ones. One guy, a pro,

:04:03. > :04:08.untouchable, he would still be winning these titles. And another

:04:09. > :04:13.half a dozen. They have been hit seriously. There is a lot of money

:04:14. > :04:20.in Russia, which has been ploughed into amateur sport, especially

:04:21. > :04:28.boxing. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, they are at the top. Great

:04:29. > :04:35.Britain are right there, --. Frankly, you have won a gold medal

:04:36. > :04:41.here, the only British boxer to do so. How tough was it? Because you

:04:42. > :04:48.have got such a buzz, because you keep winning, you are so happy. I

:04:49. > :04:55.was ?6 over every night, and I was losing it by the morning. It was

:04:56. > :05:02.just fluid, so it was coming off. I came out of the arena, came onto the

:05:03. > :05:08.scales, gutted, I went back to the hotel, I did laps of the hotel. He

:05:09. > :05:15.would be buzzing. In the final, that is when I felt it. You had to do it

:05:16. > :05:21.the hard way. I beat the world number one, two and three. When he

:05:22. > :05:25.was going out to Chicago, we were looking at the draw, and we thought,

:05:26. > :05:30.if he gets a good break, he will get to the quarterfinals. He will win

:05:31. > :05:36.twice and lose in the third fight, that would be incredible. He had to

:05:37. > :05:43.come through one guy, he was unbeaten since 2003. For four years.

:05:44. > :05:49.He had won the World Championships, the reigning world champion, and

:05:50. > :05:54.Olympic champion, and as Frankie was coming down one side of the draw, he

:05:55. > :05:58.knew he would have to meet him. The Russian was knocking everybody out.

:05:59. > :06:05.People thought that Frank was having a good time, but he has got this

:06:06. > :06:12.Russian. So Frankie could have a nice time in Chicago! You only

:06:13. > :06:17.watched it back a few days ago? I did not watch the Italian one,

:06:18. > :06:22.because it was scrappy, but he would gold in 2009, and the kid I beat in

:06:23. > :06:27.the second round, he has just won the gold medal here. Tell us about

:06:28. > :06:35.the current batch of boxes. A lot has moved on. You are one of them.

:06:36. > :06:43.All gone professional. It is a steep learning curve. The year after the

:06:44. > :06:47.Olympics is always tough, it is a transitional period. We have lost

:06:48. > :06:56.some experienced boxers. It is always hard. The performance of some

:06:57. > :07:03.of the lads, they are the new breed, the new generation. Despite missing

:07:04. > :07:10.out on a medal in 2012, Andrew Selby has been one of Britain's most

:07:11. > :07:13.successful amateurs. He won silver in 2011, and in June became the

:07:14. > :07:14.first British fighter to successfully defend a European

:07:15. > :07:26.title. A beautiful combination. Catching

:07:27. > :07:35.the judges' eyes. Such a talented boxer. A great finish. Andrew Selby

:07:36. > :07:38.has done it. He has successfully defended his European championship

:07:39. > :07:42.title to be crowned European champion.

:07:43. > :07:49.The last time we spoke was when you became doubled European champion.

:07:50. > :07:56.Just been back in the gym, training hard. I knew I had the World

:07:57. > :08:01.Championships coming up. I am glad Michael Conlan moved up a weight, it

:08:02. > :08:07.gives me a better chance. How much does it mean this time? It is

:08:08. > :08:14.everything I trained for, it is why I became a boxer, to be the best I

:08:15. > :08:21.can be. I have got the taught in the back to do it. When do the nerves

:08:22. > :08:26.start? I do not get nervous on the day, it is when you are waiting in

:08:27. > :08:31.the changing rooms to be called out, that is when you get nervous. I was

:08:32. > :08:38.nervous in my hotel room for this interview! But yes, it is when you

:08:39. > :08:44.get called into the ring, but when you are in the ring, you are fine. I

:08:45. > :08:47.won my first fight, and in the second fight, I was telling

:08:48. > :08:54.everybody how good I was, and I got put down. That is something I

:08:55. > :08:59.learned from. Paddy Barnes has said that to have six fights over ten

:09:00. > :09:05.days is too tough. What is your feeling? It is good for some people,

:09:06. > :09:15.but not for others. I like it. You see the shots easier. You can slip

:09:16. > :09:20.them easier, I think. You got silver last time, did you think this will

:09:21. > :09:28.give you the edge, not having the head guard? Yes, I will become world

:09:29. > :09:33.champion within two days, you will see a new world champion.

:09:34. > :09:40.He is confident. He is looking to get through to his second successive

:09:41. > :09:50.World Championship final. He faced yesterday that off in the semifinal.

:09:51. > :09:58.The number one seed, Andrew Selby, experienced in World Series boxing

:09:59. > :10:09.as well. Here is his opponent, Jasurbek Latipov. 22 years old. The

:10:10. > :10:15.bronze medal two years ago, guess who put him out at this stage.

:10:16. > :10:18.Andrew Selby. This is a rematch at the same stage of the same

:10:19. > :10:23.competition, the World Championship semifinal. Andrew Selby looking for

:10:24. > :10:28.a repeat. Jasurbek Latipov looking to overturn the verdict that left

:10:29. > :10:33.him with a bronze medal two years ago. Andrew Selby came away with a

:10:34. > :10:46.silver medal. Looking to return to the final here in Almaty 2013. He

:10:47. > :10:57.would go. The first of a scheduled three three-minute rounds. The boxer

:10:58. > :11:04.in the red, operating in a southpaw stance, Andrew Selby. The number-1

:11:05. > :11:08.boxer in the world. His opponent, the man wearing blue, with an

:11:09. > :11:10.orthodox stance, the number four seed and the reigning bronze

:11:11. > :11:21.medallist, Jasurbek Latipov of Uzbekistan. It is a bright start by

:11:22. > :11:27.both boxers. Yes, Jasurbek Latipov has started quite well. Andrew has

:11:28. > :11:32.got to watch out for his right hand. The key for Andrew is the movement,

:11:33. > :11:36.he has got to keep it going. He is relaxed and comfortable with

:11:37. > :11:39.switching. He has gone back to southpaw. The movement is the key to

:11:40. > :11:51.victory for Andrew. The assessment you put forward of

:11:52. > :11:58.Andrew Selby, being the best in the world, the Welsh coach told me that

:11:59. > :12:02.in 2010. If you just look at how he has gone to fulfil the immense

:12:03. > :12:04.promise that he has always had, the one that he has been on at

:12:05. > :12:53.international level, said he had started to do the weight

:12:54. > :13:00.right. In plain terms. His tournament experience reflects that.

:13:01. > :13:16.Andrew Selby switching back to southpaw.

:13:17. > :13:22.Jasurbek Latipov started the round quite well, but now Andrew is

:13:23. > :13:27.starting to get into his stride, he is moving better, he is in and out.

:13:28. > :13:31.He has increased the work rate, and he has taken the second half of the

:13:32. > :13:42.round, and I think he is moving ahead now. Andrew Selby forcing his

:13:43. > :13:54.man back to the ropes. Jasurbek Latipov dropped his hands. Andrew

:13:55. > :14:01.Selby receiving instruction. A round broken in two phases. Yes, he

:14:02. > :14:06.finished it a lot better, Andrew. He increased the workrate and tempo. He

:14:07. > :14:10.got caught with the odd shot. For me, the second part of that round,

:14:11. > :14:27.Andrew started to pour it on a bit. A fair reflection of the opening

:14:28. > :14:31.round. The judges remember the second half of the round. You can

:14:32. > :14:34.win the first half and lose the second half but lose the round.

:14:35. > :14:41.Andrew finished the round very strongly. Masterful exponents of

:14:42. > :14:51.finishing a round in strong fashion, sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali.

:14:52. > :14:58.The number one seed, Andrew Selby, the reigning silver medallist, and

:14:59. > :15:06.two-time European Championships gold medallist.

:15:07. > :15:13.Jasurbek Latipov is a reigning bronze medallist, this is a rematch

:15:14. > :15:22.from the semifinal two years ago in Azerbaijan. They know each other.

:15:23. > :15:31.Jasurbek Latipov, 22. Andrew Selby is 24, but he has a wealth of

:15:32. > :15:40.experience at elite level. Latipov is now turning to southpaw himself,

:15:41. > :15:45.but with no real effect. You will not confuse Andrew Selby with that

:15:46. > :15:50.style. Latipov is being picked off, mainly because his feet are too

:15:51. > :15:57.slow. So he is trying to confuse Selby with the southpaw style, but

:15:58. > :16:05.it is not working. A stiff right hand from Andrew Selby. Latipov just

:16:06. > :16:16.losing his balance, Selby on him in a flash. Selby is a rare talent in

:16:17. > :16:20.that he can box as well as a southpaw as he can orthodox. There

:16:21. > :16:24.are very few boxes in the world, amateur or pro, that can do that

:16:25. > :16:36.effectively with both styles, but he is one of them. Acquitting himself

:16:37. > :16:44.incredibly well, Selby. Undefeated during that longer format of boxing,

:16:45. > :17:10.no head guard. This is a new experience for him.

:17:11. > :17:14.no head guard. This is a new Selby is trying to force his man

:17:15. > :17:20.into the corner. He can't afford to get complacent. He has to watch that

:17:21. > :17:35.he does not move into range to quickly. Turning to the referee and

:17:36. > :17:42.gesticulating with his right fist to his forehead. He wants the referee

:17:43. > :17:46.to watch Latipov's head. In the closing moments of that round,

:17:47. > :17:57.Latipov got through some solid, effective punches. But he did not do

:17:58. > :18:03.enough to win the round. Andrew started the round very well. It will

:18:04. > :18:16.be interesting to see which way the judges go. For me, Selby has won the

:18:17. > :18:22.second round. Two judges are seeing it in favour of Selby, one sees it

:18:23. > :18:33.in favour of Latipov. So it is all to play for. Everything to box for

:18:34. > :18:42.in this third and final round. Just got to maintain it now. Into the

:18:43. > :18:47.third and final round we go. The tournament number one seed is

:18:48. > :18:51.wearing red, representing Wales, and that is Andrew Selby, the reigning

:18:52. > :18:58.world championship silver medallist, who takes a strong right across from

:18:59. > :19:07.his opponent, Jasurbek Latipov of Kazakhstan. He has started round

:19:08. > :19:13.number three brightly. Then Latipov lost balance and touched down, but

:19:14. > :19:24.he has made a good start. Important for Andrew Selby to keep his shape.

:19:25. > :19:32.Once he has landed shots, he must move. In and out. Andrew Selby had a

:19:33. > :19:35.really tough assignment in his quarterfinal, overcoming the home

:19:36. > :19:50.fighter after conceding the first round. 2-1, he won that. Kazakhstan

:19:51. > :19:56.have a really strong team, inspired by this home crowd. They have been a

:19:57. > :20:00.formidable force during the course of these 2013 World Championships.

:20:01. > :20:15.Selby overcame that challenge but has a puzzle now. The only way he

:20:16. > :20:23.can land that shot is if Selby holds his feet. That brings Latipov back

:20:24. > :20:31.into it. Just don't stay in one place for one second. Beautiful left

:20:32. > :20:41.hand from Andrew Selby. That was a quality punch. He'd take some risks,

:20:42. > :20:51.Andrew Selby, but he reacts quickly. That was an example. It was tied

:20:52. > :21:08.with two judges at 19 points apiece. Judge let ah -- judge C was in

:21:09. > :21:12.favour of Selby. Latipov looking for a measure of revenge after being

:21:13. > :21:23.eliminated on this same stage by Andrew Selby two years ago in Baku,

:21:24. > :21:32.Azerbaijan. Latipov is relying increasingly on that backhand, but

:21:33. > :21:35.Selby is seeing it coming. An effective foray from either boxer

:21:36. > :21:40.could be crucial in making the difference here. Closing bell sounds

:21:41. > :21:43.to conclude round three will stop Andrew Selby feels he has done

:21:44. > :21:49.enough, things to his haunches, raises his right fist in celebration

:21:50. > :21:55.after a keenly contested affair in this 52 kilograms flyweight

:21:56. > :22:00.semifinal. Selby landed a super right-hand. That was the best shot

:22:01. > :22:08.of the round. Good movement with the head. Beautiful right hand from

:22:09. > :22:14.Selby, pushing his opponent back. He has won it for me. He should be into

:22:15. > :22:18.the final. Both boxers enter the centre of the ring. Anxious moments

:22:19. > :22:29.for the athletes and their corners as we await the official verdict.

:22:30. > :22:34.Jasurbek Latipov has his place in the world championship final. He is

:22:35. > :22:41.judged to have taken the third and final round by all three of the

:22:42. > :22:44.judges ringside. The reigning two-time European champion, Andrew

:22:45. > :22:48.Selby, has been eliminated at the quarterfinal stage. Jasurbek Latipov

:22:49. > :22:54.overturns the result from Baku, Azerbaijan, two years ago. He has

:22:55. > :22:59.revenge and has booked his place in the world championship final, the

:23:00. > :23:03.gold-medal bout at 52 kilograms. Andrew Selby, the lone Welshman

:23:04. > :23:06.through to the semifinal stage, tournament number one seed and world

:23:07. > :23:10.ranked number one, has been eliminated.

:23:11. > :23:17.Andrew, you punched the air at the end of that bout. But he is walking

:23:18. > :23:25.into the final. You access to the judges at the end of the day. That

:23:26. > :23:33.is boxing. Can you see any way that he won that? I thought I was doing

:23:34. > :23:38.all the work. But the judges thought he was more aggressive or something.

:23:39. > :23:43.After the quarterfinal, you told us you underperformed. It you feel you

:23:44. > :23:50.underperformed here? I thought I was sharp. He is a tricky opponent. He

:23:51. > :23:54.kept moving, making me miss. It was the semifinal, so I knew it would

:23:55. > :24:01.not be easy. What have you learned from this experience? You are world

:24:02. > :24:05.number one. I have learnt a lot. Just got to keep my head and keep

:24:06. > :24:11.training. I am good enough to beat everyone here, he just won on the

:24:12. > :24:17.day. Huge disappointment for the double European champion come Andrew

:24:18. > :24:22.Selby. Steve Bunce, was he unlucky? I think he got it wrong in the last

:24:23. > :24:27.round. He nicked the first two rounds and needed to make sure in

:24:28. > :24:32.the last round, because he knew Latipov was going to come at him. He

:24:33. > :24:36.beat him comfortably two years ago. At the end, he goes down on his

:24:37. > :24:42.knees and raises his hand. I don't think it is in celebration, I think

:24:43. > :24:48.the corn and says, are you OK? And I think he says, it is my hand. I

:24:49. > :24:56.don't think he had much left in the tank. He has been a member of this

:24:57. > :25:00.system now since 2008. He is the most experienced. Plus, he has been

:25:01. > :25:05.in the World Series of boxing. He has had six fights without head

:25:06. > :25:13.guards. That was why he was number one seed. Frankie? It was the right

:25:14. > :25:22.result because of the last round. He stepped off the gas. Maybe he might

:25:23. > :25:28.have been a bit tired. But he took it like a man. He was there with his

:25:29. > :25:32.hands aloft before the judge called it. He thought he had it in the bag.

:25:33. > :25:37.I have travelled the world with Selby, and he is a phenomenal

:25:38. > :25:41.talent. They are getting used to the new scoring. He needs to fight every

:25:42. > :25:46.second of every round. He switched off at the last minute, and I think

:25:47. > :25:53.that cost him. But Andrew Selby will learn from that. The coaches will

:25:54. > :25:58.teach him not to switch off for the last 30 seconds. You have got to

:25:59. > :26:03.work. He would have won otherwise. You mention the new scoring system.

:26:04. > :26:11.The length of rounds has changed. One notable change is, no head

:26:12. > :26:15.guards. Are you a fan of that? I grew up with 70s boxing, when there

:26:16. > :26:21.were no head guards. They were made law in 1984 at the Olympics in Los

:26:22. > :26:26.Angeles. Things had to change. Computer scoring then came in in

:26:27. > :26:32.1989. It was about one single point. Suddenly, the head guards have come

:26:33. > :26:35.off for the first time since 1984 and the computer scoring has gone

:26:36. > :26:43.and it is down to a man or woman sitting at the ringside, scoring

:26:44. > :26:46.at. He is right. Everyone will have to adjust. Firstly, they have to get

:26:47. > :26:53.their heads out of the way for cuts. Then they have to work on landing

:26:54. > :27:03.more punches. You have got to be busier and more like a pro. That was

:27:04. > :27:09.where Selby blew it. On the old points system, he would have won

:27:10. > :27:16.that fight. He would be in the final. But that is not how it works

:27:17. > :27:20.now. One argument is that that it will turn out hardened pros who they

:27:21. > :27:26.want to cross over. Are you a fan of having no head guards? With no head

:27:27. > :27:32.guards, it is teaching them more. When you first go in the pro league

:27:33. > :27:43.with no head guard, it is a big difference. At the same time,

:27:44. > :27:52.because you are in six fights in how many days, ten days, there are going

:27:53. > :27:58.to be loads of clashes ahead. It is going to bring an cuts, which might

:27:59. > :28:02.stop the best ox is going through. I am a fan of amateur boxing being

:28:03. > :28:17.amateur boxing and pro boxing being pro boxing. There is a difference. I

:28:18. > :28:20.think now the best boxers will not always win the tournament, because

:28:21. > :28:24.some might get frustrated and accidentally stick their head on

:28:25. > :28:28.somebody, and then they are out. I am not the biggest fan of it, but it

:28:29. > :28:34.will be intriguing. The lads will get back in the gym and learn how to

:28:35. > :28:38.get their head out of the way. So, disappointment for Andrew. Let's see

:28:39. > :28:45.where the medals went in that flyweight final. We join it at the

:28:46. > :28:51.beginning of the third round. Into the third and final round we

:28:52. > :28:59.go. It is the 52 kilograms flyweight final. The man wearing blue is Misha

:29:00. > :29:04.Aloian from Russia and his opponent, from Uzbekistan, the number four

:29:05. > :29:11.seed and world championship bronze medallist Mo Jasurbek Latipov.

:29:12. > :29:16.Latipov was the man who eliminated Andrew Selby at the semifinal stage

:29:17. > :29:22.an island's Paddy Barnes at the quarterfinal stage during that

:29:23. > :29:32.contest. Barnes tumbled to the canvas after getting tangled up.

:29:33. > :29:40.Barnes actually hit his head on Latipov's me. -- on his knee.

:29:41. > :29:45.Slowly, but surely, Aloian is gaining control. He is just bring

:29:46. > :29:49.enough to win. Latipov is so close to being a world champion, but he

:29:50. > :29:54.has got to do more. He is waiting just a bit too much. He has got to

:29:55. > :30:07.start hitting the target more often and do more work. That exchange ends

:30:08. > :30:15.with a good right hand from Aloian. The referee is sending Aloian to a

:30:16. > :30:17.neutral corner. The ringside doctor is being called into action once

:30:18. > :30:26.more to inspect the facial injury that has been sustained. -- by

:30:27. > :30:31.Aloian. When you are having to fight five or six times to get to this

:30:32. > :30:34.stage, or rather five times to get to the stage, you are going to pick

:30:35. > :30:42.up cuts here and there without the head guard. Boxers are not used to

:30:43. > :30:46.boxing without the head guard. All the tournaments before this world

:30:47. > :30:48.with head guards, so some of these boxers are boxing without head

:30:49. > :30:58.guards for the first time in their lives. Experience has been apparent

:30:59. > :31:02.throughout the Championships, so many of the boxers lean in with

:31:03. > :31:09.their head, like a bull charging out of a gate. They are very

:31:10. > :31:16.inexperienced. That is why we are getting these cuts. A good left

:31:17. > :31:22.hand. That was lovely from Jasurbek Latipov. He gets caught there,

:31:23. > :31:28.though, that is what you have got to get the spot on. The Russian is just

:31:29. > :31:39.making it again. Increased urgency from Jasurbek Latipov. Morning and

:31:40. > :31:46.handling at" is. Misha Aloian keen to retain his World Championship

:31:47. > :31:52.gold medal. He secured it over Andrew Selby two years ago in

:31:53. > :32:01.Azerbaijan. Their head is continuing to clash with real ferocity. Deep

:32:02. > :32:08.into the third round. Can Jasurbek Latipov find a big finish? Looking

:32:09. > :32:13.for a simple potshot. Both men raised their arms, but you feel that

:32:14. > :32:16.Misha Aloian has done enough to retain his World Championship,

:32:17. > :32:24.despite conceding the opening round. Another close round. I think

:32:25. > :32:31.Misha Aloian at work him. But not a lot in it at all. A couple of good

:32:32. > :32:40.shots from Jasurbek Latipov went in. Overall, I think Misha Aloian just

:32:41. > :32:44.had the better workrate. Misha Aloian from Russia has retained the

:32:45. > :32:51.World Championship gold medal, the light in the blue corner. Their

:32:52. > :32:56.man, the reigning world champion, has repeated his performance, boxing

:32:57. > :33:00.throughout the entire tournament to emerge undefeated and secure his

:33:01. > :33:03.position again as champion of the world.

:33:04. > :33:10.For Britain, more disappointment in the semifinals, as the only other

:33:11. > :33:16.fighter to make it through to the middle stage was Anthony Fowler. He

:33:17. > :33:22.had guaranteed himself at least a bronze medal after victories over

:33:23. > :33:26.the second seed from Ukraine and a quarterfinal points win against his

:33:27. > :33:31.German opponent. But he was forced to withdraw before his semifinal

:33:32. > :33:35.with a hand injury, on the advice of his Great Britain coaches. He

:33:36. > :33:41.reluctantly pulled out of the tournament.

:33:42. > :33:48.A highly significant achievement, but it is a case of mixed emotions?

:33:49. > :33:52.Yes, a bronze medal is great, but I wanted a gold medal with all my

:33:53. > :34:01.heart. I did the right thing, I am happy, but gold would be better.

:34:02. > :34:16.What happened? I had a cut on my eye. But my hand was killing me. It

:34:17. > :34:22.ballooned up. It is one of those things, the doctors told me out.

:34:23. > :34:30.What was the moment like when you were told? It was heartbreaking, it

:34:31. > :34:36.was a long day, it was playing on my mind. But I knew it was the right

:34:37. > :34:40.decision. Huge disappointment, you have got to

:34:41. > :34:48.have sympathy. Having to withdraw because of injury. I really feel for

:34:49. > :34:52.him, you could see the shape he was in, it is a terrible shame for him,

:34:53. > :34:59.because he had a couple of good victories. I know him quite well, he

:35:00. > :35:04.thought he would get the gold medal. He is only young, he has had a great

:35:05. > :35:09.tournament, he has excelled, and hopefully he can kick on his

:35:10. > :35:17.progress. It is the only advice he could have taken, to secure his

:35:18. > :35:20.long-term future. Definitely. I have to come close to him over the past

:35:21. > :35:28.couple of years, we speak quite a lot, he is so dedicated, he loves

:35:29. > :35:34.the sport, it is all about being number one. He is similar to myself,

:35:35. > :35:39.the way he thinks, he wants to win, he will not accept second best. He

:35:40. > :35:45.would have got in the ring. He would have fought with one hand.

:35:46. > :35:50.Reflecting on Britain's progress, two bronze medals, but that the

:35:51. > :35:59.disappointing or a huge success? It is positive. 31 British Isles

:36:00. > :36:06.boxers, we have come back with four medals. It is positive. Frankie won

:36:07. > :36:10.the first gold bundle in 2007, but we have sent some of our best

:36:11. > :36:16.fighters, they do not come back with anything. The fact that we are even

:36:17. > :36:21.debating this is exceptional. We had a couple of kids crashing out, Sam

:36:22. > :36:28.Maxwell got disqualified, Charlie Edwards had a cut, Joe Joyce was hit

:36:29. > :36:36.on the chin, Fred Evans didn't quite perform. With a bit more luck...

:36:37. > :36:43.With a bit of luck in the jaw, we could have easily, wait with four or

:36:44. > :36:47.five. Anthony Fowler fought his heart out to get to that stage, he

:36:48. > :36:55.would have had had to have gone through to good fighters. It is a

:36:56. > :36:58.saving grace, because there is an inadequate amount of protection with

:36:59. > :37:04.the bandages that are allowed. Bankers like Anthony Fowler, and he

:37:05. > :37:09.is a binder, if he is not careful, he will damage his hands

:37:10. > :37:23.irreparably. It is only his second major tournament, and he has shown

:37:24. > :37:26.he can compete. His withdrawal meant Zhanibek Alimkhanuly had a day off.

:37:27. > :37:33.His opponent in the final was Jason Quigley. He has now amassed 32

:37:34. > :37:38.consecutive victories including the European title in June. Number 32

:37:39. > :37:42.came in the semifinals, when he beat his Russian opponent. That ensured

:37:43. > :37:51.that Ireland had its first ever finalist.

:37:52. > :37:57.Put into words what it means to get into the final. I can't, it has been

:37:58. > :38:01.my dream since day one, to get to a World Championships was a dream, to

:38:02. > :38:08.be the national champion was a dream, to get here, everything is a

:38:09. > :38:11.bonus. I am enjoying every minute. Your opponent has had his feet up

:38:12. > :38:19.today, is that a concern? It does not matter. I am going to be

:38:20. > :38:22.prepared for anybody. Let's see how he got on when he

:38:23. > :38:24.faced the home crowd favourite, Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. It is the

:38:25. > :38:35.middleweight final. An historic moment for the fighting

:38:36. > :38:41.nation of Ireland, the fighter wearing red, with the orthodox

:38:42. > :38:46.stance, Jason Quigley, 22 years old, is contesting their first ever World

:38:47. > :38:52.Championship final. The European champion going up against the Asian

:38:53. > :38:59.champion, Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. 20 years old, one of six Kazakhstan

:39:00. > :39:07.finalist contesting the gold medals here in the final session. Jason

:39:08. > :39:19.Quigley had a terrific semifinal victory over the 2010 European

:39:20. > :39:22.Championships. He demonstrated every facet of boxing, he went backwards

:39:23. > :39:28.for the first two rounds, then in the third round he went forwards and

:39:29. > :39:34.proved superior in that facet of the sport as well. He really put his

:39:35. > :39:38.opponent under immense pressure. He was a deserving winner. That is how

:39:39. > :39:43.he booked his place into the gold-medal bout. Zhanibek

:39:44. > :39:52.Alimkhanuly, it could not have been easier, because Anthony Fowler... He

:39:53. > :39:56.takes a hard punch, and Jason Quigley is on the canvas. He will

:39:57. > :40:04.have to get his mind right. It was a swift straight shot that put him on

:40:05. > :40:09.the floor. Yes, a good shot. It has been a cagey opening. Jason Quigley

:40:10. > :40:14.prefers to box on the back foot, but he has waited for too long. He is

:40:15. > :40:19.against a skilful southpaw. A cagey opening, but Jason Quigley walked

:40:20. > :40:26.onto the shop. Things will change now. It was more or less a flash

:40:27. > :40:33.knock-down, but he knows now that he should be behind in this round. He

:40:34. > :40:43.should be behind, but the ten point system is under operation.

:40:44. > :40:52.Just because a knock-down has been scored, it will not necessarily be

:40:53. > :40:57.interpreted as a 10-8 round. We have seen one boxer go on the floor in

:40:58. > :41:04.these championships, and he was adjudged to have won the round.

:41:05. > :41:09.Let's see how it is scored. But he will not want to take the chance,

:41:10. > :41:13.people think he will be behind. That is why he is coming back in the

:41:14. > :41:18.manner he is. Zhanibek Alimkhanuly, the beneficiary of a walkover in his

:41:19. > :41:24.semifinal, because Anthony Fowler, after his epic victory over the

:41:25. > :41:29.German, sustained injury and damage to his right hand, he could not

:41:30. > :41:36.compete jarring his semifinal. That is the closing bell. A good opening

:41:37. > :41:42.round from Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. Jason Quigley, he has been on a

:41:43. > :41:51.terrific run obituaries since the middle of 2011, he found himself on

:41:52. > :41:55.the floor. Yes, it was a good shot, Jason Quigley was trying to land his

:41:56. > :42:01.own shots, with his hands have always been low, so he just got

:42:02. > :42:07.caught. It is a cagey opening, both boxers do not want to come forward.

:42:08. > :42:10.They are both counterpunches, so it is to make the opponent come over

:42:11. > :42:21.his front foot, that is the problem they both have. Not a 10-8 round, as

:42:22. > :42:28.it would be in professional boxing, so Jason Quigley is very much in it.

:42:29. > :42:35.The reigning European champion taking on Zhanibek Alimkhanuly, the

:42:36. > :42:39.reigning Asian champion. It is the 75 kilograms middleweight final. A

:42:40. > :42:47.gold medal at stake at the World Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

:42:48. > :42:55.Hard punches being exchanged by both boxers. Jason Quigley had the better

:42:56. > :43:01.of that exchange. He is better when his opponent is coming towards him.

:43:02. > :43:07.He is in and out. You have got to make the opponent come over the

:43:08. > :43:13.front foot. He needs to trigger the attack by his opponent and go back

:43:14. > :43:17.at him. He has targeted the body, he has got a good right hand to the

:43:18. > :43:24.body, then he has two switch to the left hook to the head. Zhanibek

:43:25. > :43:32.Alimkhanuly being instructed to watch the use of the four on and

:43:33. > :43:39.elbow. Running repairs needed. The footwear of Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. A

:43:40. > :43:46.real quality match. The number five seed, Jason Quigley, ranked number

:43:47. > :43:54.seven, 22 years old, he has not lost a contest since 2011. He lost in

:43:55. > :43:59.Lithuania to the Dutchman. Since then, it has been nothing but

:44:00. > :44:08.success and victories for Jason Quigley. But he has conceded the

:44:09. > :44:14.opening round here. There is the left hook. It is a better response

:44:15. > :44:21.from Jason Quigley, the right hand to the body and the left hook to the

:44:22. > :44:24.head. He adjusts his feet very well, he has got fast hands, he just has

:44:25. > :44:30.to get the timing and accuracy right. Zhanibek Alimkhanuly coming

:44:31. > :44:39.with left hooks out of the southpaw stance. Both of these men engaging

:44:40. > :44:47.in hard punching exchanges. What a left hand from ten macro once more.

:44:48. > :44:52.Jason Quigley is fighting back. A free punch combination from Jason

:44:53. > :45:01.Quigley. Both boxers testing each other's resolve. A left hand to the

:45:02. > :45:13.midsection from Jason Quigley. And all action in counter. In pursuit of

:45:14. > :45:17.the world Champion ship gold medal. This will suit Quigley, when they

:45:18. > :45:22.are standing toe to toe like this. The opportunities are there for him

:45:23. > :45:26.to land the shots. He has got to make sure the actions are very

:45:27. > :45:31.quick. When he sees the opening, he has got to punch. The referee tells

:45:32. > :45:42.him to watch the head, and the action resumes. Alimkhanuly tried to

:45:43. > :45:49.respond with a body shot. All action stuff here in round number two in

:45:50. > :45:54.this world championship final. Right hand from Quigley just before the

:45:55. > :45:59.bell. What a torrid round, enjoyed by both boxers, who planted their

:46:00. > :46:04.feet in the canvas and just let go with some hard punches to both head

:46:05. > :46:11.and body. Both landed with good shots. Alimkhanuly's guard was a bit

:46:12. > :46:15.leaky here and there, but he was throwing punches in bunches. The

:46:16. > :46:22.referee said he had to keep his head up at one stage. I think this will

:46:23. > :46:37.suit Quigley. How will the judges score that all action second round?

:46:38. > :46:47.He can consider himself a bit unlucky, Quigley, in that round.

:46:48. > :46:54.Into the third and final round we go. You see the confined space that

:46:55. > :46:58.both of these doctors are operating in. That is the manner in which the

:46:59. > :47:03.second round was fought, in the confines of that logo. Wearing red,

:47:04. > :47:07.representing Ireland, the first-ever world championship finalist. Now he

:47:08. > :47:13.is on the receiving end of April and uppercut from Alimkhanuly. And

:47:14. > :47:17.again, three punch combination success for the reigning Asian

:47:18. > :47:21.champion are going against his European championship counterpart.

:47:22. > :47:26.Right-hand success from Quigley a few moments ago. This is a real toe

:47:27. > :47:40.to toe war in the middleweight final. Quigley is not accustomed to

:47:41. > :47:45.losing. This is give and take. Quigley is dragging him into this

:47:46. > :47:50.toe to toe, but although he has got a high guard, he has got to move the

:47:51. > :47:54.head. If you choose these tactics, head movement is crucial. The head

:47:55. > :47:59.movement from his opponent is a bit better. Because Quigley is static

:48:00. > :48:03.with the head, he is getting caught with shots. It is the right tactic

:48:04. > :48:08.in terms of growing him in, but you have got to move the head as well.

:48:09. > :48:14.He was on the floor during the first round, courtesy of a quick left

:48:15. > :48:20.cross from Alimkhanuly. What a right hand, and N hand to the body from

:48:21. > :48:25.Alimkhanuly. Jason Quigley will have to come back with some offence of

:48:26. > :48:32.his own, and immediately does so with a dig into the rib cage of

:48:33. > :48:41.Alimkhanuly. And attritional contest for both boxers, but that shows you

:48:42. > :48:53.how much the top spot on the podium is needed. Again, just going at it

:48:54. > :49:07.and seeing who can give and take the most. Both boxers are now feeling

:49:08. > :49:12.the pace. Both demonstrating determination of the highest order.

:49:13. > :49:22.Alimkhanuly on the front foot. Back comes the Irishman, forcing

:49:23. > :49:31.Alimkhanuly onto the back foot. Both boxers feeling the pace, neither man

:49:32. > :49:36.giving an inch. Who can produce a grandstand finish in their effort to

:49:37. > :49:47.stand atop the world championship podium? Give and take from both

:49:48. > :49:51.men. And there is the closing bell. What an all action encounter we have

:49:52. > :49:57.had in an effort to determine the outcome of where the gold medal will

:49:58. > :50:01.go. The 75 kilograms middleweight final was an absolute classic

:50:02. > :50:07.between island's Jason Quigley, the tournament number five seed, and the

:50:08. > :50:18.number six seed, Zhanibek Alimkhanuly from Kazakhstan. Total

:50:19. > :50:36.change of tactics for both boxers compared to the first round. Quigley

:50:37. > :50:44.has just come short here. Zainab al can is the middleweight champion --

:50:45. > :50:47.Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. The president demonstrates his delight that his

:50:48. > :50:52.countrymen will stand on the top spot of the medal podium after a

:50:53. > :50:57.really absorbing, exhilarating 75 kilograms middleweight final. But

:50:58. > :51:02.let's take a moment to acknowledge Jason Quigley and the early on

:51:03. > :51:08.tournament he has had, the tournament number five seed securing

:51:09. > :51:15.Ireland's first-ever silver medal in the World Championships.

:51:16. > :51:23.Jason, you are clearly disappointed? Yeah. It is a tough sport, and I

:51:24. > :51:37.gave my whole life to it. Every minute, every second of the day. But

:51:38. > :51:43.I don't want to look back, I want to be happy, but I can't take it that

:51:44. > :51:55.way. At this moment, you can't take any positives, but you will going

:51:56. > :52:00.forward, surely? Fair play to him. Whatever he achieves, it is hard

:52:01. > :52:08.when you see somebody else doing it. If you always want something,

:52:09. > :52:12.you can't have it. I will be back. He may have lost, but well done to

:52:13. > :52:16.Jason Quigley. He makes history for Ireland, their first silver medal at

:52:17. > :52:21.the World Championships. That was like watching a pro fight. They went

:52:22. > :52:26.to to toe. The first minute and a half of the first round was like we

:52:27. > :52:29.have come to expect from Eastern Block fights and like we have come

:52:30. > :52:36.to expect from the Irish. They have the best system in Europe. But

:52:37. > :52:42.suddenly, after he gets knocked down in the first round, it then becomes

:52:43. > :52:45.like watching some mad Rocky film, two guys slugging. There were

:52:46. > :52:51.moments in that last round where if you slowed it down, one throws a

:52:52. > :52:56.shot and Mrs... It was cracking stuff. It was a middleweight final

:52:57. > :53:14.in Almaty, Kazakhstan. What do you make of that? Yeah, there was great

:53:15. > :53:20.determination. He is a really likeable guy and he will get a lot

:53:21. > :53:25.of fans from that. He is going to be fan friendly. He has made huge

:53:26. > :53:38.improvement in the last couple of years. You fought him twice.

:53:39. > :53:54.Yeah, he is a top kid, Jason. Takes a lot of battle to get up and

:53:55. > :54:00.perform so valiantly, so he did well. He is young. He will come

:54:01. > :54:04.again. He and Anthony Fowler will have a nice few contest is in the

:54:05. > :54:12.future. It is nice to have two top of from the UK and Ireland. You know

:54:13. > :54:21.him better than I do. Can he stand it, or do you think he will go up?

:54:22. > :54:26.Joe Wardle is the heavyweight. He is the middleweight. It is good. We

:54:27. > :54:32.have always produced good middleweights from these shores.

:54:33. > :54:40.Darren Sutherland, myself, James did Gail -- games the gale. The future

:54:41. > :54:43.looks good. Ireland also had a guaranteed medal after light-headed

:54:44. > :54:47.-- light heavyweight Joe Ward made it through to the last four after a

:54:48. > :54:55.great win over the European champion. He faced world champion De

:54:56. > :54:57.la Cruz from Cuba. We join it at the second of -- the start of the second

:54:58. > :55:18.round. 81 kilograms light heavyweight

:55:19. > :55:21.final. The man wearing blue is Julio Peraza from Cuba, taking on Joe

:55:22. > :55:33.Ward, 19 years of age, who has already gone continental

:55:34. > :55:37.championships gold in 2011. Jury the championships in 2013, he suffered a

:55:38. > :55:51.leg injury when competing against the Polish oxer, Joe Ward. He won

:55:52. > :55:57.the contest 3-0 in France, suffered a hand injury and was then drawn

:55:58. > :56:24.against the same opponent! He must have thought, guy is my nemesis. But

:56:25. > :56:29.he won the contest 3-0. So Ward is on the front foot. He knows he is

:56:30. > :56:39.trailing after that company did round of boxing. Very difficult to

:56:40. > :56:47.get the Cuban to come forward. Ward has got to work more to get a

:56:48. > :56:51.reaction from the Cuban, make him punch and then go back at him. Ward

:56:52. > :56:56.is not doing enough with his lead hand. He has got to do more. The

:56:57. > :57:04.Cuban is in his comfort zone, the way he is working. So Ward has got

:57:05. > :57:11.to up the workrate a bit more. A hard left right combination from the

:57:12. > :57:18.la Cruz. Ward will not be found wanting in terms of commitment or

:57:19. > :57:21.desire. Demonstrated that throughout his career, particularly during

:57:22. > :57:28.World Series boxing, when he had an epic contest. He had a terrific

:57:29. > :57:39.contest with the Number Ten seed in this tournament, home De La Cruz

:57:40. > :57:46.beat at the quarterfinal stage. Good left jab from De La Cruz. Ward

:57:47. > :58:01.continues to press, but this man is difficult to pin down. That was a

:58:02. > :58:07.good round of boxing. Joe Ward continues to press, but in doing so,

:58:08. > :58:13.is being picked off either Cuban as he is coming in. A frustrating round

:58:14. > :58:20.for Joe Ward. Everything he tried, the Cuban seemed to have an answer.

:58:21. > :58:35.Typical Cuban style, dictating the pace and the comfort zone.

:58:36. > :59:01.So we move into the third and final round. Joseph Ward is 19 years of

:59:02. > :59:03.age, staring down the barrel of elimination from this world

:59:04. > :59:14.championship tournament at the semifinal stage. He is trailing 2-0

:59:15. > :59:21.against the man wearing blue, Julio Cesar la Cruz. He won the opening

:59:22. > :59:30.round, with Joe Ward pressing during the second round. And he is

:59:31. > :59:36.continuing to press, because he has to do punches in bunches. High

:59:37. > :59:44.workrate and try to pin the Cuban down if he is to book his place in

:59:45. > :59:48.the championship final. At all costs, you have got to win that

:59:49. > :59:52.first round, as is becoming evident. It literally dictates the tactics

:59:53. > :59:55.for the rest of the contest. Get your nose in front, and you have a

:59:56. > :00:01.great chance of winning the contest. The Cubans always win that first

:00:02. > :00:11.round. So do the Kazakhs. And it is difficult then to pull it round.

:00:12. > :00:22.Disappointment by not making the Olympic Games. After that, he went

:00:23. > :00:26.on a terrific one -- a terrific run, culminating with a victory over the

:00:27. > :00:31.man who went on to take Olympic gold, he beat him out of sight. A

:00:32. > :00:36.good left hand from Joe Ward, but that gives you an idea of the common

:00:37. > :00:43.level that he possesses. He is only a dumb kid as well. -- a young kid.

:00:44. > :00:55.In Brazil, he will be quite some boxer. 20 years old at the end of

:00:56. > :01:03.the month. He has a bright future. He takes a right hand to the chest.

:01:04. > :01:07.Julio Peraza is also experienced in boxing without the head guard, he

:01:08. > :01:14.took part in the exhibition match against the Mexico team. That is

:01:15. > :01:25.significant, because if you consider that professional boxing is back in

:01:26. > :01:35.Cuba, it has not been on the island since 1961, so it is a significant

:01:36. > :01:46.move. Joe Ward out of range with that left hand. It is difficult to

:01:47. > :01:51.get past the range of the Cuban, his arms seem to go down to his boots. A

:01:52. > :01:57.good performance from the Cuban. Celebration from Julio Peraza, and

:01:58. > :02:03.the body language of Joe Ward and the shake of the head, it suggests

:02:04. > :02:10.that he knows his World Championships have come to an end.

:02:11. > :02:17.Julio Peraza will contest a second consecutive World Championship

:02:18. > :02:26.final. We wait for the official verdict.

:02:27. > :02:37.Julio Peraza has beaten Joe Ward on points to book his place in another

:02:38. > :02:41.World Championship final. Handshakes from the Irish corner for the Cuban

:02:42. > :02:48.Maestro, because he boxed a brilliant performance against the

:02:49. > :02:52.Irishman, but he is only 19, contesting his second World

:02:53. > :02:57.Championships, and he has come away with a place on the podium.

:02:58. > :03:04.No shame in being beaten by the defending champion. Great movement,

:03:05. > :03:14.I could not get to him at all, very tricky. I am disappointed, but what

:03:15. > :03:17.can I do? I had a good tournament, I got my bronze medal, so I have to be

:03:18. > :03:26.happy enough. What have you learned? It is a huge experience, I

:03:27. > :03:31.am only 19. He is an exceptional boxer, his movement is very good.

:03:32. > :03:36.His experience got to me, I could not get to him.

:03:37. > :03:40.Bronze for Joe Ward, a terrific prospect. The man he has replaced in

:03:41. > :03:46.the Irish team has been around forever. He won the European gold

:03:47. > :03:48.eight years ago and he had shrunk opinions on this year's

:03:49. > :03:54.Championships. Two medals for Ireland, what is your

:03:55. > :04:01.assessment of how they have got on? Our target was two medals, we have

:04:02. > :04:09.taken boxers here -- ten boxers here. We had five in the

:04:10. > :04:13.quarterfinals. If we had got the decisions we wanted, it could have

:04:14. > :04:18.been five medals. Two medals is a great achievement. It is a time of

:04:19. > :04:24.transition for amateur boxing, what have you made of the new rules? We

:04:25. > :04:34.have noticed a lot of cuts and broken hand. I do not agree with

:04:35. > :04:37.that. I would lock -- I would rather leave the head guards on, there are

:04:38. > :04:43.too many injuries. You will have good lads going into the ring and

:04:44. > :04:50.getting cut early and having to go home, it is not fair. Given the

:04:51. > :04:53.changes, looking ahead to 2016, are you still excited about the prospect

:04:54. > :05:01.of what Ireland can do and what the sport will look like? It is all

:05:02. > :05:08.about building, it is about keeping them focused, keeping them

:05:09. > :05:10.interested. The head guards situation, if that will deter

:05:11. > :05:19.certain lads, they will think they might as well go professional. It

:05:20. > :05:21.will be interesting. It was a great World Championships for Ireland, it

:05:22. > :05:26.could have been more, but two medals are brilliant.

:05:27. > :05:35.A great outing, that it is a recurring theme, the removal of the

:05:36. > :05:41.head guards. Come the Olympics, the image of bloodstained boxers is not

:05:42. > :05:47.the image that the elliptic committee will want to betray. That

:05:48. > :05:54.is why they were faded in and became law in 1984. It took them 18 months

:05:55. > :06:01.to take over. I can see there being a serious inquest. Lots of blood,

:06:02. > :06:12.guts and thunder, great knockouts, but it has been a problem. My

:06:13. > :06:17.understanding is that the IOC are not happy with the head guards being

:06:18. > :06:24.dropped, so they could be a request going in. But the boxing body is

:06:25. > :06:30.powerful, so expect there to be a debate. The boxing body do not want

:06:31. > :06:37.them, but the IOC might want them back. As for Ireland, a great

:06:38. > :06:41.showing. They have got a set up in Dublin, next to the National

:06:42. > :06:47.Stadium, it is brilliant, the envy of the world. The great written

:06:48. > :06:53.squad used what they were doing and we try to build on it. They are

:06:54. > :06:56.creating fighters. I was in Belfast last week, five or six of the guys

:06:57. > :07:03.would all have been there if they had stayed amateur, near to a medal.

:07:04. > :07:08.They have a great system, amateur boxing in Ireland if the number one

:07:09. > :07:18.sport. You try and walk down the street with Kenny, you cannot have

:07:19. > :07:22.it. You cannot do it. It is a bit like walking with you in London! Joe

:07:23. > :07:30.Ward coming out to the defending champion, Julio Peraza, let's see

:07:31. > :07:36.what happened to the Cuban in the final when he faced another man from

:07:37. > :07:37.Kazakhstan, Adilbek Niyazymbetov. We join it at the beginning of the

:07:38. > :07:48.third round. The light heavyweight final clean

:07:49. > :07:54.the reigning defending champion, Julio Peraza, operating in the blue

:07:55. > :07:59.vest, and the orthodox stance, and the men he is going against, Adilbek

:08:00. > :08:05.Niyazymbetov, the reigning Olympic silver medallist and World

:08:06. > :08:10.Championship silver medallist. He was consigned to the silver medal by

:08:11. > :08:17.Julio Peraza two years ago. Adilbek Niyazymbetov's defeat are too slow,

:08:18. > :08:20.he is waiting to long. He does not want to commit because he will walk

:08:21. > :08:26.onto the counter, but he has to do things differently. He is starting

:08:27. > :08:30.to lose the contest, he has got to increased the tempo and put the

:08:31. > :08:32.Cuban under more pressure. Julio Peraza is allowed to box like this,

:08:33. > :08:46.he is almost in periods. Again, the Cuban is making the

:08:47. > :08:58.Kazakhstan under his terms at his pace, so clever at doing it, the

:08:59. > :09:04.Cubans. The tangle causes Julio Peraza to lose the brilliant

:09:05. > :09:08.balance. Just continuing to poke away at the abdominals of Adilbek

:09:09. > :09:21.Niyazymbetov. Not allowing him to set. What a right hand from Julio

:09:22. > :09:28.Peraza. His hands are also down by his belt line, but luck at how it is

:09:29. > :09:36.being made to pay. It is accurate. He is keeping him occupied, and will

:09:37. > :09:40.be registering with the judges. A good left-hander from Adilbek

:09:41. > :09:45.Niyazymbetov. Adilbek Niyazymbetov has got to double up the jab, that

:09:46. > :09:51.is how you close down the gap. Most definitely with fast feet. Single

:09:52. > :09:57.attacks are not enough. Boxing at the Cuban's case, the Cuban is doing

:09:58. > :10:01.things a bit better, finding the quality work, the right hand here

:10:02. > :10:08.and there. Keeping his opponent off balance.

:10:09. > :10:14.Julio Peraza boxing on the back foot, moving wonderfully, side to

:10:15. > :10:22.side, skipping around the boxing ring. The balletic grace that belies

:10:23. > :10:29.his muscular physique. Adilbek Niyazymbetov should be working

:10:30. > :10:35.there. You must work. He is not experienced in that mode of boxing.

:10:36. > :10:40.The new interpretation of the rules. Julio Peraza picking his man off.

:10:41. > :10:46.The bell sounds, Julio Peraza raises his arms in anticipation of victory,

:10:47. > :10:49.because he feels he has done enough to retain his World Championship

:10:50. > :10:55.gold medal against the man he beat to claim the title two years ago in

:10:56. > :10:59.Azerbaijan. A good display, in and out boxing from Julio Peraza, but

:11:00. > :11:05.his general rhythm and the way he controlled the pace, Julio Peraza, I

:11:06. > :11:15.cannot see how he can give it to Adilbek Niyazymbetov. Julio Peraza

:11:16. > :11:19.has successfully defended and retained his World Championship gold

:11:20. > :11:26.medal with a delightful display of boxing over the tournament's number

:11:27. > :11:30.one seed, Adilbek Niyazymbetov. It was a battle between the number one

:11:31. > :11:32.and number two seeds, the best to light heavyweight boxers in the

:11:33. > :11:36.world at the moment, they came together, and the Cuban, Julio

:11:37. > :11:45.Peraza, has prevailed. Cuba might be the country which will

:11:46. > :11:48.always be associated with amateur boxing, but in Kazakhstan, the home

:11:49. > :11:53.nation proved they were the ones to beat, with eight boxers making it

:11:54. > :11:56.through to the semifinals. With all of the local success, we sent our

:11:57. > :12:12.man out into Almaty. When they told me I was going to

:12:13. > :12:19.Kazakhstan, the first thing I thought was Bora. But there is more

:12:20. > :12:26.to this country than the stereotypes you may have seen.

:12:27. > :12:33.The city of Almaty is as much about shopping moles as it is about market

:12:34. > :13:10.stalls. And boy, is this country big, you

:13:11. > :13:13.can fit France, Finland, Spain, Germany, Italy, Sweden and the UK

:13:14. > :13:48.all into Kazakhstan. When it comes to sport, they are

:13:49. > :13:52.bonkers about boxing. TRANSLATION: It is a tradition, it comes from our

:13:53. > :13:59.ancient roots, our people were really strong infighting. In the

:14:00. > :14:02.Mongolian boars, we try to win, so our love of boxing comes from the

:14:03. > :14:10.tradition of fighting from our history. But of course, today,

:14:11. > :14:16.boxing is very popular, and our people love it. Kazakhstan, a

:14:17. > :14:21.country bubbling with culture and banged up for it boxing.

:14:22. > :14:26.Amateur boxing can take you to some obscure places, where has it taken

:14:27. > :14:33.due, what has been the most enjoyable? I will start with the

:14:34. > :14:39.worst, Ukraine, when I was in the European cadets, a 5-star hotel, we

:14:40. > :14:45.got there late at night, and we went out, the top of the flats tore

:14:46. > :14:52.down, so we were getting chased by dogs. In the middle of a building

:14:53. > :14:57.site! And the best? The Commonwealth Games, Australia, the highlight of

:14:58. > :15:02.my career. I did not go to the Olympics. I have never done a mixed

:15:03. > :15:09.games, nixed sports, and I did there. It was so nice a country, and

:15:10. > :15:15.all of the sports supported each other, Dean Macey was so

:15:16. > :15:20.supportive. He came to all of our fights, he was as happy as we were.

:15:21. > :15:30.You want a Lonsdale Belt outright last month, what is next for you? I

:15:31. > :15:46.am currently the British and Commonwealth champion. I am European

:15:47. > :15:53.number two. Hopefully, Lee Purdey will win, because he is from London

:15:54. > :15:57.and has a good domestic fight. Next year, I definitely want to see a

:15:58. > :16:04.world title fight. Where are we with you? You are free fights into your

:16:05. > :16:09.pro career. Yeah, I am still just a baby. I am enjoying it. I had

:16:10. > :16:18.imaging injury, but I am over that. Which is a shame. Yeah, I was meant

:16:19. > :16:22.to fight in Vegas, but I decided to pull-out because I did not want to

:16:23. > :16:31.go there and not docs as well as I could. But I will hopefully be fine

:16:32. > :16:34.before the end of the year. And then 2014. Me and Steve were saying

:16:35. > :16:43.earlier that there are loads of Jewish boxers who are unbeaten --

:16:44. > :16:48.British boxers. Hopefully, I will take some of the unbeaten records

:16:49. > :16:55.and just progress. I am just enjoying doing what I am doing. We

:16:56. > :17:00.always like to see the big rise in action, so let's have a look at the

:17:01. > :17:03.superheavyweight final. Kazakhstan got a fight through. It was the

:17:04. > :17:09.seven foot tall number two seed and home fighter, taking on the world

:17:10. > :17:28.number one from Azerbaijan. We join it at the start of the second round.

:17:29. > :17:37.The gold medallist had the privilege of taking championship gold in front

:17:38. > :17:42.of his fans to years ago in Baku, Azerbaijan. The man trying to

:17:43. > :17:50.emulate that is the boxer in blue, who was beaten by Medzhidov in the

:17:51. > :17:55.semifinal stage two years ago. The incessant pressure applied by

:17:56. > :18:02.Medzhidov was enough to overcome the tarring figure that is the six foot

:18:03. > :18:05.nine Dychko. Slower start of the contest than we anticipated by

:18:06. > :18:13.Medzhidov, who normally was his way forward and makes the opponent pay

:18:14. > :18:28.will stop instead, he is being kept on the end of a peppering jab from

:18:29. > :18:33.the figure from Kazakhstan. Perfect tactics again from the Kazakhs.

:18:34. > :18:45.Winning that opening round is the priority. That then dictate the

:18:46. > :18:51.tactics. Dychko was attempting the uppercut that you were referring to,

:18:52. > :18:55.to try and keep Medzhidov at bay. Medzhidov is not fighting with the

:18:56. > :19:00.same intensity as earlier. That is because he had a hard, long

:19:01. > :19:05.tournament. You have got to be so fit to win this gold medal. You need

:19:06. > :19:09.a bit of luck. Dychko is having the luck in terms of beating the German

:19:10. > :19:16.in the semi. Much easier contest. On the other hand, Medzhidov, totally

:19:17. > :19:23.different. In his quarterfinal, Dychko was also the beneficiary of a

:19:24. > :19:29.walkover. The Indian Federation were under suspension, so it was a

:19:30. > :19:35.relatively comfortable tournament for Dychko. Perhaps that freshness

:19:36. > :19:39.makes him fresher than a man who was engaged in a really torrid encounter

:19:40. > :19:52.yesterday. This is as subdued as I have seen Medzhidov in global

:19:53. > :19:55.competition. Right hand to the body from Medzhidov, but they are all

:19:56. > :20:06.singles. Where is the marauding energy we have seen? Generally, they

:20:07. > :20:13.are threes and fours. He is swinging away, but not in punching range.

:20:14. > :20:22.Dychko appears composed. There is less head movement from Medzhidov.

:20:23. > :20:26.That speed has gone out of his work. At the end of the second run, one

:20:27. > :20:31.suspects that Dychko, in the presence of the nation's leader,

:20:32. > :20:38.will have done enough to open up a two round advantage. Medzhidov just

:20:39. > :21:11.fell short with that shot. Medzhidov has got an uphill task

:21:12. > :21:17.now. As we move into the third and final round of this superheavyweight

:21:18. > :21:23.gold medal bout, the reigning champion, wearing red, Medzhidov,

:21:24. > :21:30.could well be on the witty losing his crown. Oh, and that right-hand!

:21:31. > :21:36.One single punch has put Dychko on the floor. The Kazakhstan is in

:21:37. > :21:42.trouble. The referee is making the mandatory eight ounce. That is the

:21:43. > :21:48.danger when you face this man. Medzhidov has a haymaker of a right

:21:49. > :21:51.hand, and lets out a rule of delight, because Ivan Dychko has

:21:52. > :21:56.been knocked to the canvas and appears to be in bad condition. The

:21:57. > :22:02.referee immediately called the ringside doctor into the ring. Let's

:22:03. > :22:09.hope Ivan Dychko is OK. Still doesn't know where he is. It is a

:22:10. > :22:15.walk on rubbery legs back to his blue corner, aided by the doctor.

:22:16. > :22:22.What a defending performance that is for this fella. Magomedrasul

:22:23. > :22:31.Medzhidov has retained his world championship title in the most

:22:32. > :22:37.explosive fashion. Look at that for a thunderous right-hand, an absolute

:22:38. > :22:45.thunderbolt. The towering figure of the six foot Dychko went to the

:22:46. > :22:49.canvas. That was the follow-up after the mandatory count. Magomedrasul

:22:50. > :22:54.Medzhidov is the winner, and once again champion of the world.

:22:55. > :22:59.What a finish. Medzhidov came alive in that last round. The it is great

:23:00. > :23:03.to see. What is what superheavyweight boxing should be

:23:04. > :23:11.about. I am still not decided on the head guards, but that was classic.

:23:12. > :23:15.How did the referee allowed that to continue? In pro boxing, it would

:23:16. > :23:19.have been stopped after the first knock-down. In amateur boxing, it

:23:20. > :23:24.would be stopped after a slight wobble. But the referee let it

:23:25. > :23:27.continue. You will not see many knockouts like that in amateur

:23:28. > :23:34.boxing. It was like something from the 70s. Those guys know each other.

:23:35. > :23:38.They have bubbly boxed seven or eight times. They are like friends!

:23:39. > :23:45.That silver medal for Kazakhstan meant they finished on top of the

:23:46. > :23:58.medal table with four golds, two silver and two bronze.

:23:59. > :24:03.How did the British team view their world championship experience? We

:24:04. > :24:15.caught up with the coaching team after the finals.

:24:16. > :24:19.They are a young team coming into these championships and relatively

:24:20. > :24:26.inexperienced. But coming away with two medals at one of the toughest

:24:27. > :24:30.tournaments in the world, we would have taken that before we got on the

:24:31. > :24:36.plane to come out here. There are a lot of positives to take forward.

:24:37. > :24:41.What have you made of the new rules in terms of no head guards and the

:24:42. > :24:45.point-scoring system? You have got a generational doctors who have not

:24:46. > :24:51.boxed with head guards. Only the referees will take time to adjust.

:24:52. > :24:58.Hopefully, in time, boxing will get better. At the minute, it is delay

:24:59. > :25:02.transitional period. But it has been a great learning experience in this

:25:03. > :25:05.championship. It has been a young team, and they will only benefit

:25:06. > :25:10.from boxing in these championships. They know now that if this is the

:25:11. > :25:20.way it is going to be, they will be better next time. If you look at Lee

:25:21. > :25:24.Fowler, it was his first championships, and he has been a

:25:25. > :25:30.revelation. That shows the other boxers what can be done. It is

:25:31. > :25:38.possible to come here and get a medal. How have the guys handled

:25:39. > :25:42.some of the low points? As a team, the lads have all got round it.

:25:43. > :25:48.Andrew Selby, the lads all supported him. Same with Anthony Fowler. That

:25:49. > :25:57.was a big disappointment because of his injury. But it is a happy team.

:25:58. > :26:07.They live with each other for a long time, so it is a good team spirit.

:26:08. > :26:13.It looks good for Rio. We are in a much better position than a few

:26:14. > :26:16.years back. Coming away from this championships with two medals is a

:26:17. > :26:23.great performance. It is an inexperienced team, because we lost

:26:24. > :26:29.all our big guns post-London. Things look good for the future. Come Rio,

:26:30. > :26:35.we will have a strong squad. So two medals for Great Britain.

:26:36. > :26:44.That puts us in a good place. There are a lot of boys in the GB system.

:26:45. > :26:48.I would say that some of the coaches are great group of men. They will

:26:49. > :26:54.look at the 20 or 30 boxers inside the GB system and narrow it down to

:26:55. > :26:59.about 15. It still has to be narrowed down to ten, but it is a

:27:00. > :27:02.solid team if we can keep them. No matter how much money we throw at

:27:03. > :27:07.them, it is still hard to keep them. Not long ago, you were on the

:27:08. > :27:12.other side of the line. Now you are looking in. Who should we look out

:27:13. > :27:22.for? I look forward to seeing Sam Maxwell. The talent from Liverpool.

:27:23. > :27:28.Lovely lad. His tournament was cut short because of the head-butt. He

:27:29. > :27:35.is a mature lad. I have been lucky to work with those coaches we just

:27:36. > :27:39.saw. Those lads have got the best coaches in the world looking after

:27:40. > :27:48.them, and if they knuckle down hard, they can surpass what we did in

:27:49. > :27:55.London. Frankie, still our only world champion. Who should we be

:27:56. > :28:02.looking at? Fowler. Definitely. He is only just moving up to

:28:03. > :28:11.middleweight. By Rio, he will be middleweight. As a lightweight, he

:28:12. > :28:20.has played 67 and lost three. We have to leave it there. Thanks very

:28:21. > :28:24.much to all our guests, Frankie, Anthony and Steve. So two bronze

:28:25. > :28:27.medals signals and encouraging turn for Britain in Kazakhstan. But after

:28:28. > :28:32.seven bronze medals, Jason Quigley picks up Ireland's first silver at

:28:33. > :28:35.the World Championships. For the Irish, the bronze age is over. From

:28:36. > :28:41.all of us, goodbye.
