0:00:02 > 0:00:04- 'Kelly Holmes.' - 'The crowd are on their feet.'
0:00:04 > 0:00:07'Good footwork be DeGale - what a start.'
0:00:07 > 0:00:09'Denise Lewis, Olympic champion!'
0:00:09 > 0:00:12'And Rebecca Adlington is bringing it home for Britain.'
0:00:23 > 0:00:26'Great Britain get the gold medal!'
0:00:26 > 0:00:29- 'Yes! Yes, yes!- Kelly Holmes for Great Britain.
0:00:29 > 0:00:31'What a performance!'
0:00:31 > 0:00:34'James DeGale is the Olympic champion!'
0:00:34 > 0:00:36'You are absolutely brilliant!'
0:00:36 > 0:00:38'Great Britain takes gold!'
0:00:51 > 0:00:54It's a massive opportunity and one that, as a group,
0:00:54 > 0:00:56we are experienced, we're very keen to take.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59Knowing that it's the best competition you can ever play in,
0:00:59 > 0:01:02it's the pinnacle of any athlete's career.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05It's such an exciting time for every sport,
0:01:05 > 0:01:09not just swimming, and hopefully we can go there and rule the roost.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30I invite the athletes of the world to participate
0:01:30 > 0:01:34in the Games of the 30th Olympiad in London one year from today.
0:01:34 > 0:01:36Good luck, London.
0:01:36 > 0:01:37CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:01:39 > 0:01:42And so the clock has ticked past one year to go
0:01:42 > 0:01:44until the London Olympics.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59The real business of qualifying for the Games has begun in earnest
0:01:59 > 0:02:03for Britain's athletes, and the teams behind them,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05helping them every inch of the way.
0:02:05 > 0:02:09Today, we bring you the stars of athletics, rowing,
0:02:09 > 0:02:10swimming and triathlon.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12But first, with one year to go until London 2012,
0:02:12 > 0:02:14who better to open the show
0:02:14 > 0:02:17than the world's greatest all-round athlete, Jessica Ennis?
0:02:36 > 0:02:39So where's the lens? I can't quite see.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45What's the best thing about being Jess Ennis?
0:02:45 > 0:02:47Obviously, athletics,
0:02:47 > 0:02:48wedding on the horizon,
0:02:48 > 0:02:51and just the people around me, great friends and family.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58Over time, I've learned that I do have to give her orders.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02"Do this, do this." Keep the message succinct,
0:03:02 > 0:03:04cos that's how it's best received.
0:03:08 > 0:03:12That is so typical of you, that we're working on something there,
0:03:12 > 0:03:16and you moan about something over there. Yeah, it ain't all about...
0:03:16 > 0:03:18I said that bit was all right.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20It's not where you finish, it's where you start.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23How much do you know at the start of each week? Does Toni
0:03:23 > 0:03:25give you a shout on Sunday evening
0:03:25 > 0:03:27and say, "This is the plan for the week ahead,"
0:03:27 > 0:03:29or do you just turn up and he unveils the horror?
0:03:29 > 0:03:34I need to know exactly what I'm doing every day, weeks in advance,
0:03:34 > 0:03:36so I can just get it right in my head.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39I have to know what session I'm doing on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
0:03:39 > 0:03:41If I just rocked down to the track
0:03:41 > 0:03:45and didn't know what I was doing and then he just surprised me with a session,
0:03:45 > 0:03:49there'd be uproar! I'd absolutely hate it!
0:03:49 > 0:03:52Yeah, wait, though. Hold that a second, then go.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55Not a second, even, it's a hundredth of a second.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58Sometimes she needs a bit more convincing. As does anybody.
0:03:58 > 0:04:02"Where have you got that from? What's that about? What'll that do for me?"
0:04:02 > 0:04:04You come to understand, when she was 11,
0:04:04 > 0:04:07and you've got this guy, six foot tall,
0:04:07 > 0:04:09it's just fear, you do as you're told,
0:04:09 > 0:04:14so you're pretty much teaching. You get a bit older, you're coaching.
0:04:14 > 0:04:16Now, she's Jessica Ennis, businesswoman,
0:04:16 > 0:04:19world champion-type thing.
0:04:19 > 0:04:22I used to be able to bully her - I can't any more.
0:04:22 > 0:04:23I am now the bullied!
0:04:23 > 0:04:26It must be a real bond of trust between the two of you?
0:04:26 > 0:04:27Yeah, I think there has to be
0:04:27 > 0:04:30a lot of trust between an athlete and a coach.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34Just because Toni's coached me for so long, and every year, year upon year,
0:04:34 > 0:04:36I've improved, and the programme that
0:04:36 > 0:04:38he's put together has obviously worked well,
0:04:38 > 0:04:41so I've got a lot of trust, and I'm just happy
0:04:41 > 0:04:44as long as I've got a programme, I've got complete trust in the programme,
0:04:44 > 0:04:47and I know that if I follow that and I train hard, I'll improve.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50What was it like when you first met each other?
0:04:50 > 0:04:52I guess you were part of a big training group then?
0:04:52 > 0:04:53Groups change so much
0:04:53 > 0:04:57over the years. Yeah, when I started, I was obviously one of the youngest,
0:04:57 > 0:04:59and there were some older girls there,
0:04:59 > 0:05:04and then people moved on and stopped training, doing athletics,
0:05:04 > 0:05:07so yeah, it's changed a lot over the years, but I'm the last one standing,
0:05:07 > 0:05:10so I think I deserve a medal for that!
0:05:12 > 0:05:14Come on, girl!
0:05:14 > 0:05:17- Come on, come on!- It doesn't spur me on, it just makes me angry,
0:05:17 > 0:05:19cos I think, "Why am I doing this
0:05:19 > 0:05:22"when you're just stood there, blowing a whistle?"
0:05:24 > 0:05:27To someone who's never done a session like that, try and describe the pain.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29The pain is...
0:05:29 > 0:05:32I don't know, it's indescribable.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35It builds up in your legs, obviously, the lactic acid,
0:05:35 > 0:05:37and your arms are tired,
0:05:37 > 0:05:40you're out of breath, and your body feels like
0:05:40 > 0:05:43it's going to collapse. It's a horrible feeling.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46You can't get your breath back quick enough before the next run,
0:05:46 > 0:05:49and then you're building more lactic up on each run,
0:05:49 > 0:05:51so by the end, you're just dying.
0:05:51 > 0:05:53One more, one more, one more, one more.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56- I can't.- You can.- So when you go to the major championships
0:05:56 > 0:06:00and feel a bit anxious, you can think back to a session like today's
0:06:00 > 0:06:02and think, "I've got that in the bank"?
0:06:02 > 0:06:05Yeah, I always think that. I think, before an 800 metres
0:06:05 > 0:06:09at a championships, I'm always really anxious and really nervous,
0:06:09 > 0:06:11and that's one thing I do tell myself,
0:06:11 > 0:06:14is that I've done all these running sessions in horrible conditions,
0:06:14 > 0:06:17but I know I've done all those sessions,
0:06:17 > 0:06:19so I should be able to cope with
0:06:19 > 0:06:21two laps of the track at the end of the heptathlon.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24My biggest dream in the Olympics would be
0:06:24 > 0:06:27to be in the 100-metre final and to the 100-metre champion.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31Doing the most perfect competition I can on all six pieces of apparatus
0:06:31 > 0:06:33and standing on the podium at the end.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36I want to go there and do the best I can...and a medal,
0:06:36 > 0:06:41coming away with a medal, would be an awesome achievement.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43'It's a new world record!'
0:06:43 > 0:06:45'Two gold medals!
0:06:45 > 0:06:47'This man is unstoppable!'
0:06:48 > 0:06:52- ORE:- Dorney Lake, Eton. A 2-kilometre stretch of water.
0:06:52 > 0:06:562,000 metres of lung-bursting effort every race
0:06:56 > 0:06:58for GB's rowers next year.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01For Mark Hunter, the journey to defending the Olympic title
0:07:01 > 0:07:04he won alongside Zac Purchase back in 2008 has been
0:07:04 > 0:07:07anything but straightforward. John Inverdale tells us more.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13Rowing. There's a temptation to think that
0:07:13 > 0:07:17it's a public-school and Oxbridge monopoly, but it's far from that.
0:07:17 > 0:07:2120 years ago, an East End boy started rowing for fun,
0:07:21 > 0:07:23and next year, the Olympics come to his manor.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26I started rowing at the age of 14. My dad used to coach
0:07:26 > 0:07:30a local rowing club, Poplar and Blackwall, on the Isle of Dogs.
0:07:30 > 0:07:31I went down, tried it out.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34It coincided with the Olympics being on the television in '92,
0:07:34 > 0:07:37saw the old guy, Greg Searle, winning.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40Watching him and his brother win inspired me
0:07:40 > 0:07:42to want to go on that journey. In 2000,
0:07:42 > 0:07:44when I saw Steve win his fifth, I thought,
0:07:44 > 0:07:47"If he can win five, surely I can win one."
0:07:47 > 0:07:49So that really kicked it off.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52Mark Hunter did his apprenticeship as a waterman on the Thames,
0:07:52 > 0:07:55running cargo boats. His mates left school and headed for
0:07:55 > 0:07:58the bright lights and the fat pay cheques of the City of London.
0:07:58 > 0:08:02His love of rowing saw him head for Henley, to row at the Leander Club.
0:08:02 > 0:08:06Leaving the comfort of being in my own environment,
0:08:06 > 0:08:08a big fish in a small pond,
0:08:08 > 0:08:11and going to be the small fish in a big pond, it was like that,
0:08:11 > 0:08:12you've got all these great athletes
0:08:12 > 0:08:16around you, like Matthew Pinsent, James Cracknell, watching them train
0:08:16 > 0:08:19really made me understand what was needed to be done,
0:08:19 > 0:08:22and how to get to the top was by watching them.
0:08:22 > 0:08:26He went to Athens, but the Athens Olympics came and went.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29His crew failed to even make it out of the heats.
0:08:29 > 0:08:31Try explaining that to your fat-cat mates in the City.
0:08:31 > 0:08:34They didn't know what rowing was, and when I told them
0:08:34 > 0:08:38I'd started rowing, they laughed cos they didn't understand it.
0:08:38 > 0:08:40Then, obviously, my experience of getting to Athens,
0:08:40 > 0:08:42not doing well, they were,
0:08:42 > 0:08:44"You've wasted this time." Your friends have got
0:08:44 > 0:08:47flash cars, nice houses, earning loads of money,
0:08:47 > 0:08:51and I'm there with nothing, trying to get to the top and thinking,
0:08:51 > 0:08:54"Is this the right journey?" But it's a choice you have to make.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57If you want to be the best in the world, you have to make sacrifices.
0:08:57 > 0:08:59The failure of Greece became the glory of China.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02A partnership with Zac Purchase made the pair the hottest properties
0:09:02 > 0:09:05in the lightweight crews.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07We have different ways of going about things,
0:09:07 > 0:09:10but we are committed to winning, and that's what matters
0:09:10 > 0:09:12when you get out in the boat, when you come to racing,
0:09:12 > 0:09:14you want to cross the finish line first.
0:09:14 > 0:09:16And their victory in Beijing gave both
0:09:16 > 0:09:19a place in the rowing history books.
0:09:19 > 0:09:23'Mark Hunter is leading Zac Purchase to a wonderful gold-medal victory!
0:09:23 > 0:09:26'And we have now gone into the record books!
0:09:26 > 0:09:31'Great Britain are the Olympic champions! And it sounds fantastic!'
0:09:31 > 0:09:34All my friends back home were watching the TV,
0:09:34 > 0:09:36and one of my close friends
0:09:36 > 0:09:38kicked his wife out and said, "I need to be on my own."
0:09:38 > 0:09:42It was interesting to hear all their stories and how emotional they got,
0:09:42 > 0:09:44cos they know how hard I worked and how long
0:09:44 > 0:09:47it had taken. They patted me on the back and said,
0:09:47 > 0:09:48"Well done, it was well worth it."
0:09:48 > 0:09:50What do you do when you have an Olympic gold?
0:09:50 > 0:09:53If you're Mark Hunter, you go to America
0:09:53 > 0:09:55and do some coaching, chill out, surf.
0:09:55 > 0:09:57While you're trapped being a full-time athlete,
0:09:57 > 0:10:00you don't do anything else, you think you're the only thing
0:10:00 > 0:10:02that's important in the world, what you're doing.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05But when you step outside, you realise, to be honest,
0:10:05 > 0:10:10the world doesn't care about you. They see you at a big event on TV for a few minutes,
0:10:10 > 0:10:11and then they forget about you.
0:10:11 > 0:10:15It made me realise how important it is to really appreciate what we do.
0:10:15 > 0:10:17Purchase battled with illness and injury,
0:10:17 > 0:10:20then last year, they started over again,
0:10:20 > 0:10:24and when they went to the World Championships, it was like they'd never been away.
0:10:24 > 0:10:27'Here they are, three lengths ahead of the World Champions.
0:10:27 > 0:10:29'That's pretty stunning.
0:10:29 > 0:10:33'Job well done for Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter.
0:10:33 > 0:10:38'They've added the world gold medal to the gold they won two years ago.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40'Absolutely incredible.'
0:10:43 > 0:10:44Yes!
0:10:44 > 0:10:45We're back.
0:10:45 > 0:10:49Now it's full steam ahead to the Worlds and then the London Olympics,
0:10:49 > 0:10:52when all Hunter's mates who thought he was mad to go rowing
0:10:52 > 0:10:54when they were raking in the cash,
0:10:54 > 0:10:58will be able to spend some of it watching him try to repeat that Beijing glory.
0:10:58 > 0:11:01That's one of the special things about home Olympics -
0:11:01 > 0:11:05your friends, family, close friends, maybe not-so-close friends
0:11:05 > 0:11:06can come and see you in action.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09It's kind of a great story to win in Beijing,
0:11:09 > 0:11:11have some time out, come back,
0:11:11 > 0:11:13get our seed back and then go on to London
0:11:13 > 0:11:16and what will be on the day.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20To go there and accomplish a second gold would be the ultimate.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22I can't think of anything better than that.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25Head to our website for more information
0:11:25 > 0:11:29and to keep up with everything that's happening
0:11:29 > 0:11:32in the world of Olympic sports.
0:11:34 > 0:11:36To have the Olympics in your own backyard,
0:11:36 > 0:11:38I drive past it maybe once a week,
0:11:38 > 0:11:40see the stadium being built.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43The Olympics is the pinnacle of any sport, but the ones in London,
0:11:43 > 0:11:48on home ground, is going to be something very special.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51I get a shiver down my spine every time I think about London 2012.
0:11:59 > 0:12:03Hi, there! My name's Ben Pipes, GB men's indoor volleyball captain.
0:12:03 > 0:12:07This is our court where we're coming back next year for London 2012.
0:12:12 > 0:12:16As you come in, you see the media side on the right.
0:12:16 > 0:12:20On to the left is the athletes changing rooms and the warm-up courts.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22This is one of the changing rooms we use during the Games.
0:12:22 > 0:12:26You can see it's fairly lifeless now, but I can promise you
0:12:26 > 0:12:29when it's full of players, there's lots of banter,
0:12:29 > 0:12:31there's a lot of pushing and shoving.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34THEY SHOUT
0:12:37 > 0:12:42Moving into Earls Court, even now I get goose bumps.
0:12:42 > 0:12:48You imagine 15,000 people in a packed home Olympics.
0:12:48 > 0:12:53You get a real glimpse and a feeling of the grandeur of everything,
0:12:53 > 0:12:56and I know if we could play tomorrow, we're ready.
0:12:59 > 0:13:05Rowing brothers stood together at the top of the podium at Barcelona '92.
0:13:05 > 0:13:0920 years on, Britain will again have a pair of brothers chasing Olympic gold,
0:13:09 > 0:13:14but they won't necessarily be helping each other out all the way here in Hyde Park.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17Every British athlete's dream is to win a gold medal.
0:13:17 > 0:13:22It would be fantastic if we could both get up there on the podium, but one step at a time, I think.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24Finishing hand in hand would be a dream,
0:13:24 > 0:13:27but it is one of those special things on the day.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30I can't imagine us not racing down the finish, to be honest.
0:13:30 > 0:13:33Even if we had the best intentions in the world not to,
0:13:33 > 0:13:35we're the two lads who can't play Monopoly
0:13:35 > 0:13:37without throwing the board at each other.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40Suddenly you're on the biggest sporting stage in the world.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42I've got a feeling we'll probably race.
0:13:42 > 0:13:46If we were going hand in hand, I might just dip in for the line.
0:13:47 > 0:13:50Outside of this, he's a semi-professional triathlete
0:13:50 > 0:13:53and a semi-professional Football Manager player, I think.
0:13:53 > 0:13:59I'm a Leeds United fan, so every time I'm on Football Manager, I start off with Leeds United.
0:13:59 > 0:14:00I started with Aston Villa last week,
0:14:00 > 0:14:03because they had more money to spend and it's more exciting.
0:14:03 > 0:14:05I buy all the Leeds players.
0:14:07 > 0:14:09Who started the triathlon thing first?
0:14:09 > 0:14:12Definitely, it was me, I started everything first.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16- He always says that, he always says I copy him.- You do.
0:14:16 > 0:14:21Swimming and running, our parents were into that
0:14:21 > 0:14:23and doing everything as kids, even a bit of football.
0:14:23 > 0:14:25Cricket, rugby, I suppose.
0:14:25 > 0:14:28- You never played football or cricket.- I did!
0:14:29 > 0:14:32I begged my dad to take me to a triathlon to have a go
0:14:32 > 0:14:35and I think the year after Jonny started it, as well.
0:14:35 > 0:14:40He's got an altitude tent at home and he sleeps in it at night,
0:14:40 > 0:14:43so he goes to bed, turns it on, and all night I get this annoying

0:15:33 > 0:15:35there's no doubt that they are the big rivals.
0:15:35 > 0:15:39They are on a different level than all the other ones.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44and they are great champions as athletes and as people,
0:15:44 > 0:15:49and for me, and I guess everyone else, it's a challenge trying to beat them,
0:15:49 > 0:15:51How to do it? You have to run faster than them.
0:15:51 > 0:15:54It sounds easy, but it's pretty difficult.
0:15:55 > 0:15:58If Alistair wasn't there, I wouldn't be as strong.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09making me work that little bit harder.
0:16:09 > 0:16:12It's only little things, and it probably makes little difference,
0:16:12 > 0:16:15but maybe that's the little bit of difference that helps.
0:16:15 > 0:16:18How worried are you that one day he's going to be better than you?
0:16:18 > 0:16:21I am not worried it's going to happen.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30but in the end, we always manage to work it out.
0:17:30 > 0:17:33There's pressure because we're in the same house so much,
0:17:33 > 0:17:35but the quality of information
0:17:35 > 0:17:38that you get is second to none. You know sometimes too much!
0:17:38 > 0:17:41He's gone out and worked with Ian Thorpe, Brooke Bennett,
0:17:41 > 0:17:43lots of top Olympic athletes, so I fully trust

0:18:17 > 0:18:21I quite like being just that little bit different,
0:18:21 > 0:18:24saying, "Well, I do 12 sessions a week and I do a bit of rock climbing,"
0:18:24 > 0:18:27because there's not that many other athletes that do it.
0:18:27 > 0:18:29You ever been scared of heights?
0:18:29 > 0:18:32The first climb I did, I got halfway and realised,
0:18:32 > 0:18:34"I've got to get down!"
0:18:34 > 0:18:36Are you OK?
0:18:36 > 0:18:38No, that really hurts.
0:18:38 > 0:18:42The Chinese suction cups release any sore trigger points,
0:18:42 > 0:18:46but it just looks horrific when you see it happening.
0:18:46 > 0:18:48We've heard about Hannah's hectic schedule,
0:18:48 > 0:18:50but, Patrick, yours isn't exactly easy -

0:19:09 > 0:19:13- when you see your daughter struggling some days? - I don't find that difficult,
0:19:13 > 0:19:16because, as a coach, it's information.

0:19:38 > 0:19:43And Hannah Miley, she swam so well, but she's come fourth.
0:19:43 > 0:19:46Every missed opportunity, like getting fourth again,
0:19:46 > 0:19:50it's a huge driving point, you don't want that to happen again,
0:19:50 > 0:19:53and you kind of have to use it as fuel to come back fighting
0:19:53 > 0:19:55faster and stronger next time around.
0:20:10 > 0:20:14Obviously, with the 400 to come on the last day,

0:20:44 > 0:20:45Well done, Hannah Miley.
0:20:45 > 0:20:50It's great I can get these performances, because it shows the hard work he's doing
0:20:50 > 0:20:54when he has time to coach, because half the time he's flying helicopters.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56It's fantastic we can produce these results
0:20:56 > 0:21:00and it does show sometimes it's not all about the better facilities,
0:21:00 > 0:21:05it's about the coaches, the coaching relationship and how they coach you.
0:21:09 > 0:21:11The Serpentine here in Hyde Park
