0:01:41 > 0:01:44who's aiming to become the first British swimmer in history

0:01:44 > 0:01:48to successfully defend an Olympic title - Rebecca Adlington.

0:01:57 > 0:01:58Just bizarre.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01I was, like, why are people wanting to talk to me?

0:02:01 > 0:02:03I didn't understand it.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07I couldn't get my head round the whole interview and photos

0:02:07 > 0:02:10and people wanting...

0:02:10 > 0:02:11Do this, Bec, do that.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17I'm, like, why are people interested in talking about me?

0:02:17 > 0:02:19I'm from Mansfield. I'm a girl from Mansfield!

0:02:19 > 0:02:23Why are people talking to me? And I was so baffled.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26It was something I eased into and everyone was so nice.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30I thought... I was like, "I'm going to get loads of criticism",

0:02:30 > 0:02:33and everybody was going to start saying stuff about me

0:02:33 > 0:02:35and I got really panicky.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39Every single person, even now, has been so supportive and so nice.

0:02:39 > 0:02:44Adlington coped with the attention which followed her Olympic achievements as best she could,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47but Becky couldn't repeat the brilliance of Beijing in Budapest,

0:02:47 > 0:02:52finishing seventh in the 800 metres at the 2010 European Championships.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54You've got bigger things to come.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58I'm so disappointed. You train so hard and...

0:02:58 > 0:03:02'Even if I've had a really tough meet like the Europeans last year,'

0:03:02 > 0:03:06I got so many nice messages that it just picks me up.

0:03:06 > 0:03:11I love that we have that support in Britain and people do recognise

0:03:11 > 0:03:13that we are just human beings

0:03:13 > 0:03:15and not everybody wins all the time in sport.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18It's so nice to have that support from people.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20No athlete is ever going to win every race.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22It's not possible.

0:03:22 > 0:03:23If you look at Rebecca,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25she's Britain's most successful ever swimmer

0:03:25 > 0:03:29and one of the most successful ever female athletes.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32People say, she's not quite won this medal

0:03:32 > 0:03:35or not quite won that medal.

0:03:35 > 0:03:40If you look at it in context over a five-year career at the top so far,

0:03:40 > 0:03:45it's just unbelievably high achievement and consistency.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56I remember we were on holiday with the family,

0:03:56 > 0:03:58and I have got two older sisters,

0:03:58 > 0:04:00my older sister's five years older than me

0:04:00 > 0:04:03so she could swim up pretty well by the time I was younger,

0:04:03 > 0:04:05and I remember I hated being the baby.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08I was always like, "I want to do what they want to do."

0:04:08 > 0:04:10I remember being on holiday, my mum was blowing my armbands up

0:04:10 > 0:04:12and my sisters were in the pool

0:04:12 > 0:04:14and I ran and jumped in the pool without my armbands

0:04:14 > 0:04:18and everyone stopped and I came up and started swimming and carried on.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Everyone was like, "Oh, my God, she doesn't need the armbands!"

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Let's stretch this freestyle out a bit more, everybody.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Don't get sloppy.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33'I started coaching Rebecca at 12.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36'My first impression was she was someone who was totally focused,'

0:04:36 > 0:04:38totally dedicated.

0:04:38 > 0:04:43Somebody who was prepared to pay the price, even from a young age.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47She wanted to be good and she was prepared to do anything to be good.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Bill...we have such a great relationship.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52We don't say many things to each other.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55We are, like, "You all right?", "Yeah."

0:04:55 > 0:04:57We can read each other so well, which is what is so good about it.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00He knows I am tired. I don't have to tell him.

0:05:00 > 0:05:05He knows when I'm happy or sad and he can read that straight away.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08Sometimes in sport, people can get so caught up

0:05:08 > 0:05:11with being a sports person, it takes over your life.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14It's very important, especially for us who's swimming

0:05:14 > 0:05:16it does take over your life, to remember,

0:05:16 > 0:05:18I'm just a 22 year-old girl.

0:05:18 > 0:05:19That's so sweet.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22I was never that big.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25I was always big. I swear I was born this big.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28Family life is important to Becky.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Her sister, Chloe, runs a bridal business.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Clothes provide a refreshing change to chlorine.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36I value Becky's support massively, along with all my family.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39Becky's very honest. It's nice to have Becky involved

0:05:39 > 0:05:41because I know she'll always tell me what she thinks

0:05:41 > 0:05:42and give me the right opinion.

0:05:42 > 0:05:47It's lovely to have her support and to be able to work together.

0:05:47 > 0:05:50The support is amazing that I get from my family

0:05:50 > 0:05:51and I give it to them as well.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54I can go to my sister's and she cooks for me some nights a week

0:05:54 > 0:05:57just so I can go straight to hers and food is on the table.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01It is so bizarre, being there and talking about her day,

0:06:01 > 0:06:03which is totally different to my day.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05She's doing all these creative things.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07They definitely keep me grounded.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10My sisters and parents do not let me get away with anything.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14Even when I've just come back, "Will you get..?", "No!"

0:06:14 > 0:06:17I can't ask for anything. "Get it yourself!"

0:06:19 > 0:06:21Amazing.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25I didn't, honest to God, think I was going to win, going into the Worlds.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27I just wanted to go and race well.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain,

0:06:30 > 0:06:33world champion of the women's 800 metres freestyle!

0:06:33 > 0:06:35What a superb swim that was.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38I felt relieved more than anything else after my race. Ah!

0:06:38 > 0:06:41It was just, like... Then the joy came. I was like, "Yeah!"

0:06:41 > 0:06:44It was nice to get back and see where the rest of the world were at

0:06:44 > 0:06:47and get an understanding, with a year to go,

0:06:47 > 0:06:49how everyone's looking.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Not even thinking beyond 2012, to be honest,

0:06:52 > 0:06:54whether it's retirement or not.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58As a distance swimmer, you don't tend to go on past the mid-twenties,

0:06:58 > 0:07:01because your body cannot do the work.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03I've been doing solid 10 sessions a week,

0:07:03 > 0:07:06getting up at 5.15am, pushing your body,

0:07:06 > 0:07:08only having two weeks off a year, since I was 12.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12I think it's definitely a thing to take time out after,

0:07:12 > 0:07:15enjoy doing everything, and then see if I miss it to be honest.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19If I want to get back in I'll be, like, get back in!

0:07:21 > 0:07:25If I feel I can't improve any more, or I don't love the sport any more,

0:07:25 > 0:07:26I'll definitely retire.

0:07:26 > 0:07:31But, at the minute, I absolutely love it and don't want it to end.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37Nick Hope talking to Becky there.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Success in London won't only be measured in terms

0:07:40 > 0:07:42of how our athletes perform at the Olympics,

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Britain will also be hoping to maintain a proud tradition

0:07:45 > 0:07:48of producing successful Paralympic medallists.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50One of whom is handcyclist Rachel Morris.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Tanni Grey-Thompson caught up with her

0:07:52 > 0:07:56at the Para-Cycling World Road Championships in Denmark.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00My name's Rachel Morris and I'm part of the Great Britain cycling team

0:08:00 > 0:08:02and ride a handcycle.

0:08:09 > 0:08:14The disability I have is reflex sympathetic dystrophy, or RSD,

0:08:14 > 0:08:19which causes the brain and body to reject the limb that's been injured,

0:08:19 > 0:08:23which then spreads, and it causes intense pain.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Good girl, good girl.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29In the beginning, all I did was twist my ankle on a dry ski slope.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32It wasn't even a wonderful snow-covered mountain.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35I ended up with an awful lot of problems with it

0:08:35 > 0:08:38which weren't picked up on at the beginning.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41It is a strange thing, it's not particularly usual,

0:08:41 > 0:08:43especially the way mine ended up going.

0:08:43 > 0:08:48Unfortunately, it ended with me having multiple amputations.

0:08:48 > 0:08:55All the medals and cups I've won, including my Beijing gold medal.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58She has had to adapt her sport to her disability.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01At school she was a runner and an athlete.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04She progressed through sailing.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08When she lost her second leg, sailing was no longer a possibility,

0:09:08 > 0:09:11so she started doing handcycling.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13My new bike room's coming on Look at that. Check that out!

0:09:13 > 0:09:16It is not done yet.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19It's going to have a turbo in there, so I can train in the winter.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24Handcycling is more than a sport to me.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26It's a way of managing the pain.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Without it, my life does become unmanageable.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33She is remarkably like her grandmother,

0:09:33 > 0:09:36who was also in a wheelchair. She had multiple sclerosis.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38Rachel grew up seeing Grandma in a wheelchair

0:09:38 > 0:09:41and she got the idea that if you want to get somewhere,

0:09:41 > 0:09:44you've got to go for it.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47We're here in the Danish town of Roskilde

0:09:47 > 0:09:50for the Para-Cycling Road World Championships.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Tough enough for anyone at full strength,

0:09:52 > 0:09:55but two weeks ago, Rachel Morris dislocated her shoulder

0:09:55 > 0:09:56during a training run.

0:09:56 > 0:10:02We did a time-trial set effort with the squad just out of Bath.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06I went into a corner and it was very wet on the roads,

0:10:06 > 0:10:09quite a wet day, and there was quite a slippery surface.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12Very shiny Tarmac and the bike just slid.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14It felt like it locked and slid.

0:10:14 > 0:10:15It went into the bank

0:10:15 > 0:10:18and managed to flip the bike lengthways and sideways.

0:10:18 > 0:10:19Rolled it.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23I came out of it with a dislocated shoulder.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Causing this injury potentially could trigger the same reaction

0:10:26 > 0:10:28that has happened in my legs

0:10:28 > 0:10:32and the RSD to become active in my arm.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Obviously, I have no legs.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39Worst-case scenario - it could do the same thing.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43I have become very, very worried.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47Rachel came here as the defending world champion in two races,

0:10:47 > 0:10:51the time-trial over 15 kilometres and the road race over 30.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55Despite her best efforts, in this year's time trial she could only manage fourth.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57The best bit is my shoulder did

0:10:57 > 0:11:00make it round the course.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02So I came out in that sense and completed something

0:11:02 > 0:11:04I didn't think I'd have done two weeks ago.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08I didn't do it as I would want to.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10I gave it everything I could have done

0:11:10 > 0:11:13and I couldn't have done more as I am at the moment.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20WHISTLE

0:11:20 > 0:11:23Two days later, with her shoulder strapped up once again,

0:11:23 > 0:11:28she reached the podium in the road race, crossing the line for bronze.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31After your accident so close to the World Championships,

0:11:31 > 0:11:35how much of a relief was it you were able to compete here and race?

0:11:35 > 0:11:38It's been a mixed thing.

0:11:38 > 0:11:44It was mixed coming into it, which is why I left it as a late decision.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48The idea of coming in injured and not being at the top,

0:11:48 > 0:11:53not being where I want to be ultimately on top of the podium

0:11:53 > 0:11:55was quite hard to get my head around.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58But on the other side of it, I desperately wanted to be here, because that is what I do.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00It's what I get up to do in the morning

0:12:00 > 0:12:03and what I go to bed thinking about. That is me.

0:12:05 > 0:12:10I have got to think of next year and next year is the ultimate goal

0:12:10 > 0:12:14for everything and everyone and the pinnacle of my career.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18If that was taken from me, I think that would possibly be the point

0:12:18 > 0:12:21where I would give up, which is a terrifying thought.

0:12:21 > 0:12:27That has so much power and emotion in it, that it does drive me on.

0:12:27 > 0:12:33So, yes, next year is massive in lots of ways.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36My British Olympic dream would be to achieve another gold medal

0:12:36 > 0:12:38for Great Britain at the Olympics next year.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41To be standing on top of the rostrum in London.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43For me, personally, that would be a huge thing

0:12:43 > 0:12:44but also for British judo.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46We've never had an Olympic Champion.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49It's fairly in our faces all the time,

0:12:49 > 0:12:51and, yeah, it's always in the back of my mind.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09- I'm Lucy.- I'm Denise.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11BOTH: This is Horse Guards Parade.

0:13:14 > 0:13:15It's a great place for the venue.

0:13:15 > 0:13:20We've got Whitehall right there and Downing Street over there with David Cameron

0:13:20 > 0:13:22and The Mall right behind us.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25It's not a bad place to have a venue, for sure!

0:13:27 > 0:13:31This is the walk we do as we come off the warm-up court and head towards the main stands.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35We always take our flip flops, so we have to walk on the pebbles.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38It doesn't feel very nice, but...

0:13:38 > 0:13:43Make some noise for Lucy Boulton and Denise Johns!

0:13:43 > 0:13:44CHEERS

0:13:44 > 0:13:47We go up the steps, get high-fives from the crowd.

0:13:47 > 0:13:48Play some nice music.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50# Here come the girls! #

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Gets you pumped up for the match.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55These stands have been full all week.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58At first, people didn't really know what to do.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02They were quite quiet on centre court and then people started getting into it.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Beach volleyball is renowned for having a party atmosphere.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07The London crowd haven't let us down.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14That China game was our career highlight.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Beating a bronze medallist was... it was a great match

0:14:17 > 0:14:20and we really challenged them. It's been a brilliant week.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24Everyone's so excited about coming back next year.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30This is the North America area of the 2012 Gardens,

0:14:30 > 0:14:33the latest section of landscaping at the Olympic Park

0:14:33 > 0:14:34that's nearing completion.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38Beijing gold medallists Pete Reed and Andy Hodge faced a momentous task

0:14:38 > 0:14:41at this year's World Rowing Championships.

0:14:41 > 0:14:42Since the 2008 Games,

0:14:42 > 0:14:46they've raced New Zealand 13 times and lost the lot.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49It's been a trying season for the British odd couple

0:14:49 > 0:14:53who now have to make some big decisions together ahead of 2012.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59We're quite different guys but we're mates.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02When we're on the water we fool around sometimes

0:15:02 > 0:15:06and work hard together, work well together.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08We get on well. It's not always fun and games, we argue as well.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11We've got our bubble, nothing outside matters to us.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14We just concentrate on the rowing and when we're finished,

0:15:14 > 0:15:16your personality changes.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18It's fair to say we know each other well.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21I probably see Pete more than anyone else in my life.

0:15:21 > 0:15:22At least he's got a wife!

0:15:22 > 0:15:24I've been single for a long time,

0:15:24 > 0:15:27so I go home and it's just me and the flat!

0:15:27 > 0:15:28What do you do?

0:15:28 > 0:15:31You go home and you think about the rowing the next day.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39We haven't won a race against the Kiwis ever in a pair.

0:15:39 > 0:15:43We're well practiced at that one.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46Yeah, we know what that feels like and we're both sick of it.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50COMMENTATOR: New Zealand from Great Britain. It's so close. Silver today.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53That is about as close as it ever got.

0:15:53 > 0:15:54I was BLEEP off afterwards.

0:15:54 > 0:15:59It hurts more when you are so close and when it's that close you think, "could I have done anything else?"

0:15:59 > 0:16:02It takes a long time to get over a defeat like that.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05You need to get some serious training under your belt.

0:16:05 > 0:16:06We take the good things from it.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09There were a lot of good things to take away from it.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12We can see that. I think we'll be dangerous this season.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17We should have won the first one,

0:16:17 > 0:16:19we did because the Kiwis weren't there.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22It wasn't a devastating row. We didn't demolish the field.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25COMMENTATOR: It'll be a well-earned first gold medal for them

0:16:25 > 0:16:27in the men's coxless pair.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31We missed Hamburg, that was gutting.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33It was hard to watch that on TV. We trained so much.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36We raced so little. Seeing other crews racing was tough.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38We saw the Kiwis walk in by a lot.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42We had a good Henley Royal Regatta.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44We won that with a course record,

0:16:44 > 0:16:47beat another record there and won easily.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49We went to Lucerne, thought we were up for a good one

0:16:49 > 0:16:51and got absolutely demolished.

0:16:51 > 0:16:55COMMENTATOR: It's 13 wins in a row for New Zealand over Great Britain

0:16:55 > 0:16:59who are, it has to be said, limping over the line.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01Being beaten by seven seconds is never nice.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04But if you look at it in isolation,

0:17:04 > 0:17:06you could dig yourself a deep hole.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10We're realistic, if we are ever going to be able to beat the Kiwis

0:17:10 > 0:17:12perhaps it'll only be by a second or two.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15Going to the world cups, we've got certain things to do,

0:17:15 > 0:17:17but the winning isn't the be-all and end-all.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21It's bloody annoying coming second the whole time

0:17:21 > 0:17:23but there's always a positive somewhere.

0:17:23 > 0:17:25Even if it's been a failure by the result,

0:17:25 > 0:17:28you can draw something from it and come back stronger.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33Hodge is probably more glass-half-full than I am.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37If we have a bad one, it's easy for me to go quiet,

0:17:37 > 0:17:38rest and think about it quietly.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41He's more optimistic than I am.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45- That's fair enough, isn't it? - Yeah.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47Maybe the BBC would like to hear about how the session went?

0:17:47 > 0:17:51Sessions like that, you know you can win stuff.

0:17:51 > 0:17:53It looks like a holiday while we're here.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57Blue skies and beautiful scenery and the hotel is custom-made

0:17:57 > 0:17:58for rowers, by rowers,

0:17:58 > 0:18:02but we don't want to give the impression it's a holiday camp.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05We're here to work hard and get the final touches.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07It's a professional environment

0:18:07 > 0:18:09and a professional set-up.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12It's definitely a holiday camp. The world should follow our lead.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14We barely do any training here.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17It's about lounging in the pool and sleeping. Take note.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21Life after the Worlds doesn't really exist for me at the moment.

0:18:21 > 0:18:25Worrying being what happens afterwards is pointless,

0:18:25 > 0:18:28when we are trying to be focused on what we want to achieve.

0:18:28 > 0:18:32The World Championships will be something special.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35We'll have to put something together. It will be well rehearsed.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38We'll have a good plan. We'll have to see how we get on.

0:18:42 > 0:18:46COMMENTATOR: So much riding on the outcome of this race.

0:18:46 > 0:18:51Not just for Pete Reed and Andy Hodge but for the whole of men's team.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54Alongside them, 13 consecutive wins.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58New Zealand just a fabulous race awaits.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01The New Zealanders are laying down a huge marker.

0:19:01 > 0:19:06There's one thing that you can be sure of, Peter Reed and Andy Hodge,

0:19:06 > 0:19:10from Great Britain will not give up, not one single stroke.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14They've got 200 meters to go. They are moving very, very well.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17This is the desperate dying part of the race.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20They are five strokes to the line.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24It is New Zealand, three in a row, gold for New Zealand.

0:19:24 > 0:19:2714 consecutive second places for Team GB.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30That surely now has to be the last time we see

0:19:30 > 0:19:35Peter Reed and Andy Hodge for Great Britain in the men's coxless pair.

0:19:35 > 0:19:40Preparation has been great. We have enjoyed the build-up.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43It's been a fantastic regatta. Tough to be beaten again.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45What do we have to do to beat these guys?

0:19:45 > 0:19:47We've got everything we need but they're a faster crew.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50We know we're racing one of the best crews across all events.

0:19:50 > 0:19:52Really proud to be part of that

0:19:52 > 0:19:54and pushing as hard as we can and getting so close.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56It has been a fantastic three years.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59What happens for the next year? Only Jurgen knows that.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02He's going to look after his gold medal.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04I'm going to fight to make sure I'm in that gold medal boat.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Outstanding, right from the first stroke.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12Silver for Hodge and Reed but overall the combined British team

0:20:12 > 0:20:16enjoyed their most successful World Championships ever.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18COMMENTATOR: We are the world champions

0:20:18 > 0:20:22and Matt Langridge hits the water. It's going to be a photo finish.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25Tom Aggar, Great Britain, world champion.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28They're all now in maximum sprint.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31It's going to be a gold medal executed with such class.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Great Britain will have it on the line.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37It is gold today. The arms aloft.

0:20:39 > 0:20:43There was an important change for Pete and Andy after the Worlds.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45They've now moved into the coxless four,

0:20:45 > 0:20:47where they won their Olympic gold back in Beijing.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53My British Olympic dream would be

0:20:53 > 0:20:58going into the Olympic triple jump final

0:20:58 > 0:21:02having already set the world record previously

0:21:02 > 0:21:06and going in the first round and breaking my old world record.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12Then just sitting back and enjoying the rest of the competition, knowing that title's mine.

0:21:19 > 0:21:23While many Olympic disciplines rely on individual excellence and endeavour,

0:21:23 > 0:21:26some sports, such as hockey, also require togetherness,

0:21:26 > 0:21:29camaraderie and team spirit for their success.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31England's men seem to have all three in abundance

0:21:31 > 0:21:33as we track them down in their team hotel

0:21:33 > 0:21:36during the Euro Hockey Tournament in Germany.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41Hi, I'm Richard Alexander and I'm part of the England hockey team

0:21:41 > 0:21:45and I will give you a tour of the fourth floor. We'll see what the lads are up to.

0:21:49 > 0:21:50You don't get the smell on camera.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56One of our players is asleep just after the game.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01This is Ashley Jackson and Glenn Kirkham's room.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04As you can see, they're getting some golf practice in.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07Always important to practice your putting.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10- One take.- This is my abode.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Obviously I've got all the essentials here, my flat cap.

0:22:13 > 0:22:17Wenlock. He's always there. He comes with me every trip.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20The thing about tweed, it's a strong look wherever you are.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22So, I think it should be standard issue.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25I'm planning to get the England crest on.

0:22:25 > 0:22:31Unofficial England kit and there's going to be a kangaroo court later.

0:22:31 > 0:22:36The lads will get together and work out how they will fine him.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40We're now taking you to the other side, the posh side of the hotel.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43This is unbelievable. Cracking bathroom.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46Can't believe their bathroom. Much nicer than ours.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52This is obviously hand-to-eye co-ordination.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54A lot of training goes on.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56They're quite good as well.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58It may look like a good life.

0:22:58 > 0:23:03But it's actually, certainly for the athletes, it's a hard life.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06They don't get the social side of life that most people get.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09You can't just leave people in hotel rooms to fester.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12We've only got an hour of filming, guys.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14If you didn't enjoy the down time, these trips away

0:23:14 > 0:23:19would be a tough time because we are often away for two or three weeks at a time for tournaments.

0:23:19 > 0:23:24We're lucky that we enjoy the time we spend together.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27- Yes!- This is a joke.

0:23:29 > 0:23:34Richard Smith, the winner of that point, Iain Mackay the loser.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36Need to make sure that is clear.

0:23:36 > 0:23:37"RS 29" on the winning bat!

0:23:40 > 0:23:43It's been a tricky few years on and off the court

0:23:43 > 0:23:47for British Badminton with little success on the global stage.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50That is until this year's World Championships

0:23:50 > 0:23:55and the emergence of surprise silver medallists Chris Adcock and Imogen Bankier.

0:23:55 > 0:23:59Nick Hope caught up with the pair at their Milton Keynes training base.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06Still holding it, it feels amazing.

0:24:09 > 0:24:10It's a massive incentive now.

0:24:10 > 0:24:15We know we've got a world silver medal. It's an amazing achievement.

0:24:15 > 0:24:19It's something that I hoped in my life I would achieve,

0:24:19 > 0:24:23but to be holding is just a different level of achievement.

0:24:25 > 0:24:30REFEREE: On my left, Chris Adcock and Imogen Bankier.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Talk me through your World Championships.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37When I look back on it now, it's almost like a blur.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40We had a solid start.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43I think after that we knew we were going to be up against tough seeds.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46In the last 32 we had to play the eighth seed.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Played really well, like, really well.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51Today that would have been our best result.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53The momentum carried us through.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57- We took out the 15th seeds from Japan.- The fourth seeds.

0:24:57 > 0:25:01Then again in the semi-final we played, they were ranked two in the world,

0:25:01 > 0:25:03the second seeds who were in form.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06It was quite surreal going through each match.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09We kept playing better and better until the end of the week.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Chris Adcock and Imogen Bankier.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Everyone's had a break.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25They're quite aware they don't want us to get injured.

0:25:25 > 0:25:27It'll be quite a light session, hopefully, today.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34- Feeling the fact that you have been a way for a little bit?- Yes.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36A week off doesn't do any good for the body.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41Talk me through the posters around here.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43We've got the Olympic wall.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46We've got the two badminton Olympic medals up there.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48We obviously had a discussion about who,

0:25:48 > 0:25:51people who inspired us in the sport.

0:25:51 > 0:25:53We've got Rebecca Adlington, Redgrave, Kelly Holmes.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55Brilliant people.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57It's a fantastic facility.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00We have our gym on site and physio.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03I come in once a day after training for a check-up.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05At the minute, I have tight hips.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08I had week off last week and after a tough week at the Worlds,

0:26:08 > 0:26:11everything tightens up and it needs loosening up.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14A tough week of training ahead.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20Everything's very much on site and we're lucky to have that.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23That's the Badminton Hall.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27Then behind that is the gym where we do all our SNC stuff.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30This is where we're heading over to now, it's The Lodge.

0:26:30 > 0:26:34This is where we chill out and where some of the players live as well when they're living on site.

0:26:34 > 0:26:39This is just the lounge in The Lodge, for chilling out at lunch times.

0:26:39 > 0:26:43A few games go on. A bit of Mario Kart and everything.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47- Retro console?- It is. A bit of GameCube.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50We have a ranking going, as sad as it sounds!

0:26:50 > 0:26:55- How intense does this get, though? - Very. There is a lot of shouting.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58Big intensity, sometimes more than goes on in the badminton hall.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01The boys get very competitive playing Mario Kart.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03It's unbearable sitting here when they're playing it.

0:27:03 > 0:27:08The major factor of me and Imogen doing so well

0:27:08 > 0:27:09is we enjoy yourselves.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12To say we've been playing together for just a year,

0:27:12 > 0:27:14just shows how quickly we've gelled.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20Before your success there'd been only one other major

0:27:20 > 0:27:24international medal for the sport since silver at the Athens Olympics.

0:27:24 > 0:27:28Badminton has had funding cuts, coaches leaving,

0:27:28 > 0:27:29and players complaining publicly.

0:27:29 > 0:27:33- Was that ever a distraction? - No, it certainly didn't affect us.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35We didn't really pay much attention to what was going on.

0:27:35 > 0:27:39The set up for me in England and Scotland for Imo,

0:27:39 > 0:27:41and now come together as Team GB,

0:27:41 > 0:27:44just makes everything worthwhile and shows the set up works.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50Hopefully our success and the way we played

0:27:50 > 0:27:53took attention away from that and focused on something positive

0:27:53 > 0:27:56which was the good badminton that was being played in Wembley.

0:27:57 > 0:28:01Unfortunately, that brings us to the end of another British Olympic Dreams.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04Join us next time for more like this.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06What I really want is to run well in an Olympics

0:28:06 > 0:28:08and walk away and say, I gave it 100%.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11Maybe it wasn't at the peak of my career,

0:28:11 > 0:28:14but it was the best I could do and it was a good result.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17- Not to be missed. Until next time, goodbye.- See ya.
