:00:18. > :00:24.Hello and welcome back to the Lee Valley can noon sla lop centre for
:00:25. > :00:32.the fist of the World Cup series. During London 2012 this venue had a
:00:33. > :00:36.golden Hugh to it. We thought we could win one medal, then suddenly
:00:37. > :00:41.we had two. This is looking good for Great
:00:42. > :00:45.Britain. That is the fastest time we have seen, absolutely brilliant.
:00:46. > :00:53.This could be gold and silver for Great Britain.
:00:54. > :00:59.My goodness, they have got a Silver Medal. Bailey and Stobbart are the
:01:00. > :01:07.Olympic champions. There is no chance of that same 1-2 finish with
:01:08. > :01:11.those crews in the men's C 2. Timbalely has retired from the
:01:12. > :01:15.sport. Hounslow and Florence will be out on the water though, Helen
:01:16. > :01:20.Reeves will be part of the team here. It is box office isn't it It
:01:21. > :01:24.was amazing. It was an electric atmosphere. The racing was fantastic
:01:25. > :01:27.and the ruts were, so no wonner people want to see this racing with
:01:28. > :01:32.the best competitors here. So what else are on the men's side
:01:33. > :01:37.are we looking for? Alongside David and Richard you have got Matt Lister
:01:38. > :01:42.who races with Rhys Davies. And the women's side? . You have Mali
:01:43. > :01:46.Franklin in the singles who has been on great form and you have Fiona
:01:47. > :01:51.Pennie in the K1 women. What about this course? This is a different set
:01:52. > :01:54.up to the Olympics? Yes, so they started moving the blocks round, so
:01:55. > :01:58.they can replicate different features and make it technically
:01:59. > :02:03.more variety for the competitors. Whennup say that, moving the blocks
:02:04. > :02:07.round, when they turn the pumps off this goes dry and you can walk
:02:08. > :02:13.round. That is the beauty of it. It mean you can reconfigure it and make
:02:14. > :02:18.it different and refresh things and replicate courses abroad. How do the
:02:19. > :02:23.competitors think about it? You have the top section, that gets them into
:02:24. > :02:27.the run. It is straightforward. They set a downstream sequence, that gets
:02:28. > :02:31.the speed in. We come down to the first big drop. This is where it all
:02:32. > :02:36.begins. First move, nine, ten, tricky, water
:02:37. > :02:39.in the face, you have to keep the line, you have know what you are
:02:40. > :02:44.doing, then it goes into a tricky section. It is when you get this
:02:45. > :02:47.close to it, you are glad you are wearing the safety cover. It is so
:02:48. > :02:53.noisy, you can hear the power in it. Yes, when you are on it it seems
:02:54. > :02:56.even bigger. On the lower part of the course it
:02:57. > :03:00.is is this stopper hee at gate 18 which is the talking point It's a
:03:01. > :03:06.particularly big stopper, at this point the biggest thing is the fact
:03:07. > :03:10.you are fatigued. These guys are in pain here Their arms are solid and
:03:11. > :03:16.you have to hold on to make ur shoe you don't make any loose mistakes.
:03:17. > :03:21.You to get away to the commentary box, we will see both the C and K
:03:22. > :03:27.classes, the K is kayak, with a twin paddle, and in the C, in the canoe
:03:28. > :03:29.they only have a single blade, they have to swap that back and forwards.
:03:30. > :03:48.We will start with the women's C1. Gibson. Great Britain. So the first
:03:49. > :03:59.of two British challengers. Hails originally from Kinross in Scotland.
:04:00. > :04:03.And a decent fifth in the Europeans. Looking nice an smooth. She lines
:04:04. > :04:07.herself up for the first, gate six on course, sneaks the blade under.
:04:08. > :04:11.Looking composed at the moment. She will line herself up. Glides off the
:04:12. > :04:15.top of that stopper. Curling into the up stream gate, gate seven.
:04:16. > :04:20.Getting the boat back running downstream. Lining for the next
:04:21. > :04:25.couple of downstream gates. She will look to catch the curl on the
:04:26. > :04:30.left-hand side of this drop. It will let it push he across. Good
:04:31. > :04:35.anticipation, that is why she is a second to the good. Now the question
:04:36. > :04:41.is to keep it going. She is coming to a tricky section. This is the
:04:42. > :04:48.crucial section She looks controlled. Just glanced up and
:04:49. > :04:52.knocked that pole. Drops down, still keeping the canoe moving, which is
:04:53. > :04:58.encouraging. Again, a bit of bother there.
:04:59. > :05:06.Losing a fraction of time adds she drops low and deep into that Eddie.
:05:07. > :05:12.-- as. There is Loir's time. She can get this back. Carlin was not
:05:13. > :05:18.particularly smooth or clean or fast. She is low there. One second,
:05:19. > :05:32.two seconds, three seconds, four. You can see the time loss there. She
:05:33. > :05:36.is having to push her body away, losing precious fractions again.
:05:37. > :05:41.Only 18 years of age. So she has very much a future for this category
:05:42. > :05:47.which one day may well be in the Olympic programme. That is why there
:05:48. > :05:54.is so much interest in it. Coming down to look to take the
:05:55. > :06:01.advantage. She goes into the lead by eight seconds, so much better on the
:06:02. > :06:09.bottom than Loir. She looked composed through the whole run.
:06:10. > :06:15.And Jess Fox on her way. Through gate seven. Clean so far. The World
:06:16. > :06:20.Cup overall points champion of last season, the Olympic silver medallist
:06:21. > :06:24.in kayak on this very stretch of water here, just over two years ago,
:06:25. > :06:33.and arguably the best all round woman paddler and as I say that and
:06:34. > :06:37.compliment her she makes a mistake! The 1.49 second he had might have
:06:38. > :06:41.been giving away. However, we have seen a lot of difficulties further
:06:42. > :06:46.down the course, so there is a lot of time to be gauged. She could pull
:06:47. > :06:50.that back. She has experience, got high technical about. Jess does a
:06:51. > :06:54.lot of switching, so she makes sure she has her strong side, so her
:06:55. > :06:59.blade is on the right side. She is good at that. She has a bit of extra
:07:00. > :07:06.power as well. She won the world title last year, now there is
:07:07. > :07:13.Gibson's time. She should, despite all the failure, 1500ths. We know
:07:14. > :07:17.that she could take a second, possibly more on this bottom section
:07:18. > :07:23.and with challenges to come, she needs to build the advantage. A good
:07:24. > :07:28.move there. Nice across the top. On the top of that stopper she waited
:07:29. > :07:32.and pulled when she nigheded to. But she has just gone to the wrong side.
:07:33. > :07:37.She will have to go back round. This is going to be a costly time. It is
:07:38. > :07:42.either that or a 50 second penalty. She decided that she will go back
:07:43. > :07:49.and round, which keeps her leg. But it is not going to deliver a smile
:07:50. > :07:57.on her face. This is again, very untypical of Jess Fox. The current
:07:58. > :08:04.leader still Gibson, and I tell you what, she has taken a big scalp.
:08:05. > :08:08.Look at her face. Absolutely lovely! Whatever happens, she has notched
:08:09. > :08:12.one over Jess Fox. Certainly, I mean this is where Jess just lost that
:08:13. > :08:23.edge, she didn't quite push across the river into gate 20. Jancova, one
:08:24. > :08:28.of the top Europeans. She just missed out on a medal.
:08:29. > :08:36.You can see she has reasonable boat speed, but as soon as that, is that
:08:37. > :08:40.a two second penalty? It is. The bough popped up there. Sat back a
:08:41. > :08:51.bit. The tail went down and knocked that pole.
:08:52. > :09:01.So Jess Fox may be in second place, she is the only paddler who has gone
:09:02. > :09:15.down clean, but Gibson has the lead. Jess Fox in second. Loir in third.
:09:16. > :09:19.That is the 1, 2, 3. Monica has picked up some pace. Now
:09:20. > :09:23.she will look to line herself up. Put in a reverse straight there,
:09:24. > :09:30.drawing the bough round so she can get the line across the stopper.
:09:31. > :09:38.Pushing her bough up. She will look to push it away and get that rhythm.
:09:39. > :09:43.The speed for the stagger sequence. And two seconds almost behind ailly
:09:44. > :09:47.Gibson. And Great Britain still with Malorie
:09:48. > :09:55.Franklin to come, the fastest semifinalist. The fans are getting
:09:56. > :09:57.involved in this as well. Lory Franklin to come, the fastest
:09:58. > :10:03.semifinalist. The fans are getting involved in this as well. . She got
:10:04. > :10:17.caught on the stopper, giving away a bit of time.
:10:18. > :10:25.This is going south as far as she is concerned. Another peddler to be
:10:26. > :10:35.found out here. -- paddler. And 133.71. That puts her way down the
:10:36. > :10:39.order. Now, Teng the first of two Chinese
:10:40. > :10:49.challengers. This is the younger of the pair,
:10:50. > :10:55.just 22 years of age. And finished a few years ago, four years ago in
:10:56. > :11:00.2010 ahead of Jess fox in rankings, interesting to see the Chinese here,
:11:01. > :11:07.good leverage and you can see almost two seconds to the good. So that is
:11:08. > :11:13.a nice start. Found Hes caught up and bouncing through. We have seen a
:11:14. > :11:17.couple of time, she is going to have to reset, recompose to make sure he
:11:18. > :11:26.doesn't make any further mistakes. I have her four seconds down from
:11:27. > :11:30.being almost two seconds up. We could see her, she could make up
:11:31. > :11:34.some of that time on through this section where we see 14, 15 as time
:11:35. > :11:39.to be gained and lost. At the bottom, 18, 19, we have seen a lot
:11:40. > :11:44.of the girls in the final find difficulty at getting into 18 and
:11:45. > :11:50.across. Stern got held there, that is another couple of seconds so look
:11:51. > :11:57.at Gibson's time and you can see there, 84. She is what, seven
:11:58. > :12:01.seconds virtually down on the British paddler who commands first
:12:02. > :12:06.place at the moment. See the bough pop into the Eddie
:12:07. > :12:10.line and drop into 18. She will have to push across on the back of that
:12:11. > :12:15.stopper, getting caught again. Having to be patient and let the
:12:16. > :12:20.bough released before she drives in. You can see the fatigue, if you
:12:21. > :12:26.looka her shoulder, they are beginning to move horizontally, that
:12:27. > :12:33.gives you a tell-tale sign of when a paddler is getting tired. The whole
:12:34. > :12:39.core and body on this course. Coming through, 22, 23, and it is a fair
:12:40. > :12:42.finish, look at that, from seven, she has taken the best part of
:12:43. > :12:47.four-and-a-half seconds of that deficit away, so all credit to her.
:12:48. > :12:52.That is a very decent finish and she puts herself into second place. Jess
:12:53. > :12:56.Fox down to third. So Mallory. Not much older. Only a year or so older
:12:57. > :13:03.than Gibson but a lot more experienced. Didn't have a great
:13:04. > :13:08.weekend in the European, didn't make the final of Vienna. This is
:13:09. > :13:13.different. Back on water she is more familiar with She is very technical.
:13:14. > :13:21.She loves the big water, always has done. She was at Shepperton at one
:13:22. > :13:27.of the Thames Wear, she had a bug for that what the. She is already up
:13:28. > :13:32.on Gibson's time. A lovely move. She hardly had to put a stroke in, the
:13:33. > :13:35.boat did it. The water pushes her across into gate ten. Slow on the
:13:36. > :13:40.switch though, coming out of that gate, but looking to build on what
:13:41. > :13:46.was a super season last year, you might remember she got the silver
:13:47. > :13:52.medal at the World Championships and also was the under 23 European
:13:53. > :13:58.champion, in kayak, very versatile paddler, she is looking to do what
:13:59. > :14:01.Jess Fox does, command both disciplines. If she can keep this
:14:02. > :14:06.run together she is looking good. Really smooth. Using the water. That
:14:07. > :14:11.is a good cushion, but the lower section is no gimme, she is right on
:14:12. > :14:17.the edge there. Good break out, nice and tight to gate. Keeping that
:14:18. > :14:22.canoe going Last big cross, can she keep her boat flat. Dragging it down
:14:23. > :14:31.there so she comes behind 19. A nice finish.
:14:32. > :14:37.Inside 132.4. Remember that time of Gibson's included two touches. So
:14:38. > :14:41.far this is clean. Really focussed. This last combination of gates
:14:42. > :14:46.coming through here. It is going to be a 1-2 for Great Britain, and it
:14:47. > :14:51.is Mallory Frank lip who comes through by almost ten seconds, to
:14:52. > :14:58.take the first women's singles of the season. But what a great job by
:14:59. > :15:11.Gibson today. Second place with Ten third. That is proof that that is
:15:12. > :15:15.what happens. She kept it together, she kept her boat dry. She was
:15:16. > :15:19.patient. Waited for the water to do the work for her and that is the key
:15:20. > :15:22.because then when you get down to the tricky bits at the end when you
:15:23. > :15:26.are fatigued, you have an extra bit of energy on some of your other
:15:27. > :15:30.competitors. That will boost the whole of the British squad's spirits
:15:31. > :15:37.to get a 1-2 in the women's Canadian singles. There is a very welcome
:15:38. > :15:43.leaderboard for the British fans. Mallory Franklin, clean run, takes
:15:44. > :15:48.first place on the podium. Eilidh Gibson, personal best in competition
:15:49. > :15:57.performance and then Teng of China, and, surprise surprise, Jess Fox,
:15:58. > :16:01.only fourth. That is shocking in the world of C1 Women paddling. It
:16:02. > :16:06.looked like a fantastic run. It was good. It was very, very scary. It's
:16:07. > :16:10.a tough course, and there were bits of it when I was panicking, but it
:16:11. > :16:16.was ready difficult for me to calm myself down, and focus on the first
:16:17. > :16:22.two gates. When I got through the first two, I calmed down a bit. We
:16:23. > :16:27.have not seen you before at a big event like this. That must've been
:16:28. > :16:31.very exciting. Just incredible. All the hard work over the winter,
:16:32. > :16:42.everything, all my team-mates who have helped me, I'm just so happy.
:16:43. > :16:45.Time now for the C1 Men, featuring David Florence, the current world
:16:46. > :16:50.champion. By his own high standards, 2014 hasn't been the
:16:51. > :16:51.best, but let's see if he can take inspiration from that amazing
:16:52. > :17:12.performance in Prague last year. COMMENTATOR: Look at that.
:17:13. > :17:23.He's produced one of the best runs of his life. Absolutely wonderful.
:17:24. > :17:35.We will start with this man for Slavonia. They have put in a very
:17:36. > :17:37.good squad performance as he undergoes the first five downstream
:17:38. > :17:49.green and white So, Savcek, having negotiated the
:17:50. > :17:56.first downstream data, without any penalty, in the men's Canadian
:17:57. > :17:58.singles just underway -- data, the first of ten competitors. That
:17:59. > :18:05.date. He's now going to come down the
:18:06. > :18:12.first big drop of the course and use the water to go to the upstream
:18:13. > :18:20.date. He needs the water to push across the river. He wants to be as
:18:21. > :18:25.tight to these polls as they can be, driving the blade into the water,
:18:26. > :18:31.keeping the rhythm fast but making sure his timing is right. Good
:18:32. > :18:41.cross. Now, he's dropped off quite low fare. That will be costly to
:18:42. > :18:48.him. That time loss in the upstream date -- gate. Was that a touch
:18:49. > :18:52.there? Yes, it was attached by the bowel or not upstream gate. --
:18:53. > :19:05.bowel. It sits on the back of the stopper.
:19:06. > :19:09.Digging deep on the last few gates. Over the last few waves and
:19:10. > :19:17.stoppers. I clean run in the semifinals but not to be in the
:19:18. > :19:25.final here. 104.12. In fact, his time in the semifinals was 103.77,
:19:26. > :19:37.so that penalty was very, very expensive. Nicholas, the overall
:19:38. > :19:50.world champion in doubles, actually. He is versatile. He's quite a
:19:51. > :19:54.strong, quite a thick body shape, very powerful. He has a short stroke
:19:55. > :20:00.but likes to get lots of power into each of them, to get the line
:20:01. > :20:08.exactly right coming into gate six. He takes a hit on that. The tries to
:20:09. > :20:18.get the term right. One second, very possible. Gliding the boat, steering
:20:19. > :20:22.it in. Looked like he was going to drop low but he bounced off the ways
:20:23. > :20:35.a little bit and now he turns his boat, letting it dries. Jumping
:20:36. > :20:44.through there. -- dipping drive. -- letting it dries. Drive. This will
:20:45. > :20:51.be interesting. Remember, he was just one second down, 1.37, so he's
:20:52. > :20:58.only lost a quarter of a second. As we have seen, it's possible to make
:20:59. > :21:05.that up. That has set him back now. Three seconds to find on the bottom
:21:06. > :21:11.section. He has to be patient and drag his nose down. The ducking
:21:12. > :21:18.under the pole. He wiggles through that split gauge. Two more
:21:19. > :21:22.downstream gates to go. This is a case of what might have been. You
:21:23. > :21:28.can see how quickly is on the down section. But for that single touch,
:21:29. > :21:32.he would have been in the lead and it would've been an interesting
:21:33. > :21:35.challenging time, so he will be very disappointed with this because that
:21:36. > :21:47.is the penalty which has cost him the lead and may ultimately cost
:21:48. > :21:55.them a place on the podium. Benus, representing Slovakia. His elder
:21:56. > :22:03.sister, she, of course, a world team gold medallist three years ago. But
:22:04. > :22:05.now races for the United States. A good start from Benus. He
:22:06. > :22:10.now races for the United States. A good start from Benus. looks smooth.
:22:11. > :22:19.Keeping the pace on the boat. That's OK. Still in touch. A slight drop
:22:20. > :22:26.off the pace. A nice cross. One of the best ones we have seen so far
:22:27. > :22:30.into gate ten. Now setting himself up for this Steiger sequence. It's
:22:31. > :22:34.important you get the lines right early on because if it goes wrong,
:22:35. > :22:40.it takes time for the next one. Slowly, patient. He drives across
:22:41. > :22:46.the back of the stopper, trying to keep as high as he can. Dropping low
:22:47. > :22:51.there. He kept the canoe moving. This will be the tell-tale sign
:22:52. > :22:59.here. Nor .73, a lot of good work but it's not over yet. The could
:23:00. > :23:09.take the lead. That's good work. Nicely done. The bowel just pops up.
:23:10. > :23:29.The clips that poll. From being ahead, behind, when he could finish
:23:30. > :23:39.strongly here, this is not over yet. Slovakia heads Slavonia. Peschier.
:23:40. > :23:43.Third at the moment. He had the eye on the line. He had the big drops
:23:44. > :23:51.absolutely nailed, the best we've seen so far in this final. So, Benus
:23:52. > :24:00.still leads but Florence is in determined style. A dynamic start.
:24:01. > :24:05.He digs in the blade really deep. He will be so eager to get this one
:24:06. > :24:11.nailed from the beginning. Digging the blade in nice and tight. Now he
:24:12. > :24:17.lets the bow drop a little bit. He's away again. This is where if you
:24:18. > :24:23.need to make sure he keeps the bow nice and dry. He lifts it through
:24:24. > :24:28.the stopper. Linus himself up. All to the good. -- Linus himself up.
:24:29. > :24:38.Can he build to the good. -- Linus himself up.
:24:39. > :24:44.most technical. -- lines himself up. At 19, that will be the crucial move
:24:45. > :24:49.for David. He looks totally in control. Here's commanding where the
:24:50. > :25:02.boat goes. A little bit stuck there. He's kept it nice. Canoe was never
:25:03. > :25:06.stop moving. Now 1.5 in his pocket. A bit too tight. Have to do an
:25:07. > :25:12.adjustment stroke. Pushed himself to early into the upstream date. Half a
:25:13. > :25:17.second behind now at this particular moment. The really getting behind
:25:18. > :25:25.him. David is really pushing on. There is a dynamic, plenty of power.
:25:26. > :25:32.Coming through gate 23. Benus watches on here. 97. A comfortable
:25:33. > :25:37.4.25. Fantastic, got off to a really good start. Last time in different
:25:38. > :25:44.sections were called to second penalty. His control was incredible.
:25:45. > :25:53.David is very good. He gets the blade fully in the water. It's not
:25:54. > :25:58.over yet. A few moments to enjoy from David Florence. But not that
:25:59. > :26:11.one. There, he was to direct, trying to cap the fractions. Has he done
:26:12. > :26:17.enough? So, Martikan, four times world champion. What's interesting
:26:18. > :26:22.about this man is that, after a season with a back injury which has
:26:23. > :26:26.plagued him, he has really come back. He was runner-up to his
:26:27. > :26:30.team-mate last weekend in Vienna but looks by much like his old self.
:26:31. > :26:36.Yes, he's always in control and looks calm in the water. He picks
:26:37. > :26:40.his strokes so cleverly. In training, it looked like he wasn't
:26:41. > :26:47.even trying. Less than half a second behind David Florence. It washed
:26:48. > :26:56.straight through. A big loss of time. He's not a big guy. Just 174
:26:57. > :27:00.kilos. The way he moves about, all these years have gone by now and
:27:01. > :27:08.people have been catching him up but it's amazing how, aged 35, you can
:27:09. > :27:13.still be competitive in this class. A two second penalty there over the
:27:14. > :27:23.stopper. A nice execution into the upstream gate. Seven seconds. I
:27:24. > :27:32.don't think even the great Martikan can catch this sort of deficit up or
:27:33. > :27:37.indeed as head competitors from the podium. Nice and tight over the
:27:38. > :27:43.exit. Florence was quick down the exit. Martikan will be as well.
:27:44. > :27:51.97.87, the running time for Florence. As you can see there, into
:27:52. > :28:08.second place. Very deceptive again. He was trying to cut the line. A two
:28:09. > :28:14.second penalty. Following that dropping low in the gate ten, that's
:28:15. > :28:17.what cost him. Confirmation, the Canadian singles men. Great Britain
:28:18. > :28:24.take the first World Cup of the season. Martikan had a solid second,
:28:25. > :28:28.and then Benjamin, he takes third place but look at that cover all the
:28:29. > :28:36.way down the final, not a clean run on the Olympic track. After those
:28:37. > :28:40.results, were published, one of their penalties was appealed to
:28:41. > :28:51.upheld by the judges so he moved into silver. Martikan, the bronze
:28:52. > :28:55.and Benus, third. How do you assess that race? It was very hard. It
:28:56. > :29:01.didn't go perfectly by any stretch of the imagination. I was tied
:29:02. > :29:07.around a few gates but I knew it was going to be hard for everyone. I'm
:29:08. > :29:12.really, really pleased. Isn't the kind of cause which rips apart?
:29:13. > :29:17.Definitely. It's very, very good water, very hard. Of course, we
:29:18. > :29:26.train here all the times I have an advantage, but we didn't hold back
:29:27. > :29:30.today. The gates were in tricky positions. A lot of guys struggled
:29:31. > :29:35.more in the final than you would expect. Fortunately, I held it
:29:36. > :29:38.together really well. The crowd here in Lee Valley unloving these events
:29:39. > :29:45.and, this glorious weather. Time now, though, for the K1 Women.
:29:46. > :29:48.Sadly, no British in this one but look out for Jess Fox from
:29:49. > :29:50.Australia, who will be keen to make up for her mistake early on in the
:29:51. > :30:06.C1. Corinna Kuhnle. Not so good on home
:30:07. > :30:09.water last weekend. Only 13th in the European Championships but looks
:30:10. > :30:21.brighter and more focussed this weekend.
:30:22. > :30:25.She is a strong paddler, she normally makes sure she is
:30:26. > :30:29.dominating it. It will be key on this really powerful whitewater
:30:30. > :30:33.course Attlee valley. Off to a good start. Kept the boat driving nicely
:30:34. > :30:36.as she slides into the first of the six up stream gates. Important
:30:37. > :30:41.things to look out for Helen. Keeping the boat moving and keeping
:30:42. > :30:44.the deck of the kayak dry. Certainly. When we see a lot of
:30:45. > :30:48.water over the top it looks like they are getting hit by the
:30:49. > :30:52.whitewater, that means that fractions of time are being taken
:30:53. > :30:57.away, they are having to work harder as well. That was a good move. But
:30:58. > :31:01.under the pole, she needs to start lining herself up for this tricky
:31:02. > :31:15.downstream stagger sequence. Nicely placed, the bough is right
:31:16. > :31:21.under the poles at gate 15. That was well executed. Didn't lose any time.
:31:22. > :31:26.She is, look 3.45 seconds up, she is on a really good run, we can see,
:31:27. > :31:31.there is a lot of time to be lost here, she snuck in and under 18.
:31:32. > :31:37.This is looking very smart indeed. Looks to have plenty of strength, oh
:31:38. > :31:41.and got tied up. Oh, well, about two seconds given away and another two
:31:42. > :31:46.for the touch on the pole. That is the big difference, she will still
:31:47. > :31:49.be in first place, but that is uncharacteristic for the two time
:31:50. > :31:57.World Champion sand she will kick herself, because this is a very
:31:58. > :32:05.beatable time. There, 111.03 and of course she takes the lead.
:32:06. > :32:09.We did see a lot of mistakes this morning and here she broke out too
:32:10. > :32:13.early in the eddy, it is difficult because you lose speed. You have to
:32:14. > :32:22.do the best you can. As you said, lost two seconds of time in the
:32:23. > :32:27.process too. Jana Dukatova, she is the reigning
:32:28. > :32:32.World Cup champion from last season. The points leader. She has long
:32:33. > :32:38.lever, and often you sense she is not going as fast as she really is.
:32:39. > :32:43.-- levers She uses them and her paddle placement is very often so
:32:44. > :32:47.accurate. She is technical and she is waiting. That is a key to her
:32:48. > :32:51.style. She places that blade where she wants to. Pulling it round that
:32:52. > :32:58.pole. A lot of the competitors in life,
:32:59. > :33:02.she has lived in the shadow of the multi-Olympic world and European
:33:03. > :33:13.champion who failed to qualify for in final along with the recent
:33:14. > :33:22.European champion. She got bounced off the curl. She wanted to drop low
:33:23. > :33:25.into gate ten. She needs to refocus. We have seen so many mistakes and
:33:26. > :33:31.there are points where you can gain that time and make that deficit up
:33:32. > :33:35.further down. Getting a bounce there by the water.
:33:36. > :33:41.She is not in control of the kayak as we would wish to see. It is out
:33:42. > :33:45.of character. She has got her boughs up and underneath that gate 15. It
:33:46. > :33:52.can be deceptive. That is one of the crux move, 14, 15, she is 4.62 down
:33:53. > :33:56.the split but we have seen that time lost on the bottom section, but if
:33:57. > :34:01.she nails it and keeps the momentum, she needs to pop across on the top
:34:02. > :34:06.of the wave. Keeping control with the blade in the water. This needs
:34:07. > :34:14.to be millimetre perfect to try and... Oh, again, gymnastically but
:34:15. > :34:19.it takes time, and at the moment, still Corinna Kuhnle, 111.03, the
:34:20. > :34:24.Austrian double World Champion, but look at the time. She has eaten some
:34:25. > :34:37.of that disadvantage back. At the end of it all, there it is, that is
:34:38. > :34:41.if only what might have been run. So Jasmin Schornberg for Germany.
:34:42. > :34:45.She gets criticised for being tentative in the way she paddles,
:34:46. > :34:50.but on this course that could pay dividends. A bit of patience here
:34:51. > :34:54.and there often is very much to the good on this course. She is gliding
:34:55. > :34:58.at the moment. Getting her boat running on top of the water rather
:34:59. > :35:03.than taking the big hits. A nice up stream gates. She slides across the
:35:04. > :35:08.whitewater. She almost has her boat dancing. It looks light. World
:35:09. > :35:13.Champion back in 2009. Finished fourth in the Europeans last
:35:14. > :35:19.weekend. Plus 3.7 so a third of a second to find. That is very doable
:35:20. > :35:23.But bounced off the way didn't get the line right and dropped to the
:35:24. > :35:34.bottom of the eddy. That is costly. Three seconds or so.
:35:35. > :35:38.Jasmine one of a strong German paddling squad for the women. They
:35:39. > :35:42.have a factory for women's kayaks in Germany. They have been strong for a
:35:43. > :35:48.number of years now, in the kayak women, you see her holding on to the
:35:49. > :35:57.stroke. This is one of the best we have seen. She is still behind
:35:58. > :36:06.Kuhnle but by how much? Sicked -- six seconds. She has the chance to
:36:07. > :36:10.reduce that and get on the podium. Kuhnle, Dukatova. The water is
:36:11. > :36:15.catching on her tail. This is where Kuhnle got into trouble. She has
:36:16. > :36:19.kept the momentum. It is about focussing to get the last three
:36:20. > :36:26.stagger sequence right. Got to go for this. Come on. 111.03. And you
:36:27. > :36:31.can see, she is more than a gate behind, past the time of Kuhnle. But
:36:32. > :36:39.that two second penalty, how expensive is that? She has gone into
:36:40. > :36:42.third place. Here is 22-year-old Lu Li for China.
:36:43. > :36:48.third place. Here is 22-year-old Lu She was second in April, over in
:36:49. > :36:53.Australia in this under 32 World Champions. Won by Jessica Fox who
:36:54. > :36:58.will follow her. Neat and tidy through the first up stream gate,
:36:59. > :37:02.sorry downstream. This is where she lines herself up. Slides in, one big
:37:03. > :37:07.stroke and she wants to push back out into the flow.
:37:08. > :37:18.Maybe not looks as fast as she did on her semifinal run: : Run. I think
:37:19. > :37:22.that was OK. That was a little water or wind movement, I don't think she
:37:23. > :37:27.had a touch. That is OK. So far so good.
:37:28. > :37:32.. That is one of the better ones we have seen. Tough move that gate
:37:33. > :37:36.nine, ten. This leads into 14, 15, a tricky move. It is important to get
:37:37. > :37:40.it right. She is looking powerful. You are seeing her reaching out.
:37:41. > :37:47.Driving the blades into the water. Dealt with the drop well and still
:37:48. > :37:54.keeping the kayak moving. Just a bit slow there. Now, there is Kuhnle's
:37:55. > :38:00.time is she still on terms? Yes, by 0.2. This will be a fantastic
:38:01. > :38:07.achievement for her, if she can take the lead here.
:38:08. > :38:11.Choppy slightly low. I am not sure if she clipped the Poulton exit. She
:38:12. > :38:17.was tight to it. She did, she clipped it on the exit. She got too
:38:18. > :38:22.tight. Kuhnle lost a lot of time here. She can still make the podium
:38:23. > :38:28.here, Lu Li. You can sense the fatigue there, just a bit. Coming
:38:29. > :38:33.down, but look at the time there, there is a terrific run, lots of
:38:34. > :38:37.determination, lots of focus, and by 0.39, despite the penalty, Lu Li of
:38:38. > :38:43.China goes into the lead. She is only over here for this competition.
:38:44. > :38:49.The whole Chinese squad go back for only over here for this competition.
:38:50. > :38:54.a two month preparation to the Asian games. It was a well executed run.
:38:55. > :38:58.This course is tricky and there is so many big moves and the designer
:38:59. > :39:06.have put out a difficult course to test them.
:39:07. > :39:08.The Olympic -- Olympic silver medallist Jessica Fox, she will be
:39:09. > :39:13.20 on Wednesday, yesterday was a bad day at the office, this morning,
:39:14. > :39:21.completely different athlete in the semifinals.
:39:22. > :39:24.She needs to set up so she can drive downstream through the split gate.
:39:25. > :39:33.That will lead her into the first two up stream gates on the course.
:39:34. > :39:37.She is pulling up and now a set up for the second after gate seven.
:39:38. > :39:44.Tight round the poles, that is nice, one stroke she is back out into the
:39:45. > :39:54.flow. Good line. The patience paid off as
:39:55. > :39:59.she gets one of the highest lines we have seen into gate ten. She pushes
:40:00. > :40:04.back out and this is where she starts lining lining Herr up. Into
:40:05. > :40:08.back out and this is where she 14, 15. -- herself up. If she can
:40:09. > :40:14.nail this she will set herself up for a top position.
:40:15. > :40:20.Neither of her famous parents here, they are watching on television
:40:21. > :40:24.Richard, her dad, Fife times world kayak champion, Miriam her mum World
:40:25. > :40:28.Champion and Olympic bronze medallist.
:40:29. > :40:33.Three seconds, lovely cushion to have, but you could easily lose this
:40:34. > :40:38.here with a penalty. Oh. A bit low there, she needs to
:40:39. > :40:48.push out on the top of this pile. Wants to make sure on this. Nicely
:40:49. > :40:53.done. Chasing Lu Li, Corinna Kuhnle second, Jana Dukatova third.
:40:54. > :40:59.This is good paddling. That was beautifully anticipated. Measuring
:41:00. > :41:07.up, this is the winning run. Surely. Comes down here, inside 110.64 and
:41:08. > :41:10.111.18. Well how deceptive is that bottom section, I thought she was
:41:11. > :41:14.sure to make it and it shows you how good Lu Li was on that section.
:41:15. > :41:16.sure to make it and it shows you how was, she was very good. Lu Li was
:41:17. > :41:21.good throughout the whole course, she kept the boat running. Jessica
:41:22. > :41:27.lost time in that second to last gate when she dropped low.
:41:28. > :41:32.So there it is confirmation by just over a third of a second, Lu Li of
:41:33. > :41:37.China from the double World Champion Corinna Kuhnle, Jessica Fox only
:41:38. > :41:43.third, Dukatova off the podium. You can see only Jess fox and Dukatova
:41:44. > :41:50.managed to go clean. The rest picked up penalty, so all the more credit
:41:51. > :42:02.to Lily for that performance. -- Lu Li. Jess Fox. No Brits made it into
:42:03. > :42:09.the men's final. Always nice at these world events to
:42:10. > :42:14.run into canoeing royalty. It is lovely to see you, it must bring
:42:15. > :42:19.great memory back Yes, the British crowd, the sunshine, this beautiful
:42:20. > :42:23.course, it is magnificent and I would love to be out there but it is
:42:24. > :42:27.nice to be on the side and reliving it to some degree. Tell us why you
:42:28. > :42:33.are not. Your career is still on going, you are writing new chapters
:42:34. > :42:37.It is on ice at moment. My crew mate Tim retired, in January, and I
:42:38. > :42:40.dislocated my shoulder last year so we would have missed the season any
:42:41. > :42:43.way because I have been recovered from surgery, I am having to sit
:42:44. > :42:51.this year out but that has given me a chance hopefully to find a new
:42:52. > :42:58.crew mate, get organise, back on an even keel and blast off to Rio. You
:42:59. > :43:02.know Richard Hounslow and David Florence how will they do? I have
:43:03. > :43:06.watched themmen every stage, through the heats and in their individual
:43:07. > :43:09.racing, they have looked so comfortable, at home out here, the
:43:10. > :43:13.course is so intense and powerful, you have to have that composure,
:43:14. > :43:18.that moment of calmness where you can weigh up what is going on, they
:43:19. > :43:23.have looking all over it -- looked all over it, they can race hard when
:43:24. > :43:26.they need to and back an when they need to, their qualifying
:43:27. > :43:32.performance was awesome, David was fantastic in his individual race, he
:43:33. > :43:39.won it and well, I have high hopes for them, in the C 2s.
:43:40. > :43:46.Let us see how they got on in the C2. Let us remind ourself of that
:43:47. > :43:50.wonderful performance at the World Champions in 2013.
:43:51. > :44:02.-- World Championships in 2013. Away go the Slovenians. Bozic was
:44:03. > :44:28.outside the Away go the Slovenians. Bozic was
:44:29. > :44:35.didn't qualify for Away go the Slovenians. Bozic was
:44:36. > :44:46.partnership, eighth in the Olympic final here two years ago. Slipping
:44:47. > :44:50.nicely through those first dates that gates. There are six of on the
:44:51. > :44:54.course and they want to see them in the eddies as little as possible
:44:55. > :45:01.because the boat is getting slowed down. 0131 for the reigning European
:45:02. > :45:06.champions. That's the advantage. That is a nice break out, really
:45:07. > :45:12.controlled. Look at the canoe. It never stopped moving. These two
:45:13. > :45:20.active. The timing is good. Working well together. Working precisely.
:45:21. > :45:25.You can see them moving their bodies back to get the boat decision on the
:45:26. > :45:32.water to keep the bow drive. Nicely done. Their coverage on the blade to
:45:33. > :45:42.three good that is very good as well. Not .38. They are looking
:45:43. > :45:46.strong. Gliding across the water, a little bit low but there are keeping
:45:47. > :45:55.the momentum. This is the key point here. Patient. And upstream gate on
:45:56. > :46:01.the course, a tricky stager sequence to negotiate. Their angle made sure
:46:02. > :46:09.they got through nice and cleanly. This is looking good. 107.79 was the
:46:10. > :46:16.fastest time in the semifinals. Look at this. I clean run by the European
:46:17. > :46:21.champions, inside 107 seconds. This is going to take a bit of beating.
:46:22. > :46:25.Absolutely, they didn't give anything away. They were very tight
:46:26. > :46:31.on the key moves, set themselves up nicely. Those tricky gates, they
:46:32. > :46:37.made sure they didn't cut the line. It's a fine line as to whether you
:46:38. > :46:41.take it so direct to make sure you don't lose any fractions or you use
:46:42. > :46:56.more space and ensure you don't hit your polls. Here are the province.
:46:57. > :47:02.They are cousins, actually. These two boys, who have lived in their
:47:03. > :47:07.shadow, have never been to Olympic Games, were superb in the European
:47:08. > :47:13.Championships last weekend on the podium and going well. Looking good
:47:14. > :47:19.so far. Very much in control, dominated where they want the boat
:47:20. > :47:27.to go. Not .157 ahead of the Slovaks, a big advantage at this
:47:28. > :47:33.stage. Driving in. They drove it a little bit too hard. Suddenly they
:47:34. > :47:41.are back to evens. That they can still build. This is where they can
:47:42. > :47:45.lie on their boat up to make sure they get the boat position exactly
:47:46. > :47:50.in the place they want to. They drive along the back of the stopper
:47:51. > :48:01.here at gate 14, chopping off a little bit at gate 15. You can see
:48:02. > :48:06.they are 2.32. This is still possible. It is still on the cards
:48:07. > :48:13.here. Losing a bit of speed there. The boat speed just got killed by
:48:14. > :48:19.the Eddie line. They drive in together to get the boat back in.
:48:20. > :48:25.This is where they need to keep cool and calm and line the boat app well.
:48:26. > :48:32.Good work there by Peter Skantar. 102.
:48:33. > :48:35.At the end of it all, they didn't actually make anything on the
:48:36. > :48:50.bottom. So, Slavonia lead Slovakia. The power being laid down there at
:48:51. > :48:57.the right time to make sure they can push off the tail of the boat to
:48:58. > :49:06.drive them back out. Germany always have good crew boats in the Canadian
:49:07. > :49:10.drive them back out. Germany always doubles. Anton and Benzien, paddled
:49:11. > :49:21.individually yesterday. Benzien was better of the two, finishing 13th.
:49:22. > :49:27.Wiggling their way through the first gate into this first upstream gate.
:49:28. > :49:32.Pushing off the wall. This course is quite wide and there won't be an
:49:33. > :49:41.opportunity to push the blade off the concrete. That is the beauty of
:49:42. > :49:44.Lee Valley. It's a cause which gives designers so much opportunity. Those
:49:45. > :49:49.blocks which you can see, are like rocks, but they are movable, so from
:49:50. > :49:55.race to race, all sorts of designs can be made. They are taking the
:49:56. > :50:04.line straight there. They took a direct line to 11. Keeping control,
:50:05. > :50:13.steering it slowly. Lining up for gate 14. Under the pole. Potentially
:50:14. > :50:20.taking a two second penalty. So high into gate 15. The tightest we have
:50:21. > :50:26.seen. These two Germans, they have been more effective in achievements
:50:27. > :50:33.in the team races. Another good break-out, tight. Coming across.
:50:34. > :50:36.They have nailed that one as well. You can see them working their
:50:37. > :50:38.blades deep into the water to make sure they turn the boat as quickly
:50:39. > :50:43.as they can to align themselves up my sleeve. Dipping their heads
:50:44. > :50:51.around the polls. Losing a fraction of time but losing -- looking good.
:50:52. > :50:58.106.57. A little bit outside. They go into second place. 2.26 seconds.
:50:59. > :51:05.No major errors. Little bits and pieces. You saw them slipping wide
:51:06. > :51:10.before they came into gate 22. Horizontal across the river. It's
:51:11. > :51:17.interesting they can take away more time than you think they could. One
:51:18. > :51:20.touch but, of course, still a lot of course, still a little bit slow on
:51:21. > :51:23.the clock, so they wouldn't have gone into the lead had they been
:51:24. > :51:29.clean. Great Britain have got, not only David Florence and Richard
:51:30. > :51:33.Hounslow but these two youngsters, Rhys Davies, just 22 and sitting
:51:34. > :51:39.behind him, Matthew Lister, 22 or so. Part of the Great Britain
:51:40. > :51:47.canoeing potential programme. How good is that to make sure your in
:51:48. > :51:51.the World Cup final? Absolutely, doing their home crowd proud. Lee
:51:52. > :51:58.Valley has given us a new lease of life because it's such a great
:51:59. > :52:05.course and exposes youngsters to Whitewater at a young age. A bit
:52:06. > :52:10.wide there and catching gate eight. They were in Australia earlier this
:52:11. > :52:14.season and finished fourth in the under 23 Canadian doubles World
:52:15. > :52:34.Championships. A decent performance. That talent was out there, as well.
:52:35. > :52:41.silver medallists. Nicely executed. Matthew keeping control at the back.
:52:42. > :52:47.Very tight around 15. Four seconds down on the civilians. --
:52:48. > :52:57.Slovenians. That's still a pretty decent run. Nice and tight in there
:52:58. > :53:02.at gate 18. Into gate 19. The crowd are really getting into this. They
:53:03. > :53:09.are on their feet. There's a lot of noise. Oh, what a pity. And another
:53:10. > :53:14.one. That's four penalties. A loss of concentration after the first
:53:15. > :53:18.mistake. And another one as well. What was a really respectable
:53:19. > :53:21.effort, I still think is a decent effort and you take those
:53:22. > :53:24.effort, I still think is a decent seconds off, it would've been 110
:53:25. > :53:27.seconds and they would been in the top five. They will learn from
:53:28. > :53:33.that. A good piece of top five. They will learn from
:53:34. > :53:37.them. Absolutely. They are frustrated. They didn't push hard
:53:38. > :53:44.enough at gate 19 and they made it very, very tight. This is the
:53:45. > :53:49.opportunity for them to round off a very good weekend's canoeing for the
:53:50. > :53:56.British squad. Florence upfront and Hounslow behind. Looking good so
:53:57. > :54:01.far. They know this course inside out. Ducking away from gate four.
:54:02. > :54:07.They are pushing hard now and they are going to drive their bal right
:54:08. > :54:17.under the polls. Nice and tight. -- bow. Pulling the boat around, they
:54:18. > :54:23.clipped the pole. David hit it with his panel, how frustrating. Plenty
:54:24. > :54:26.of opportunity to gain more time. Remember, their time in the
:54:27. > :54:28.semifinals was beaten by the Slovenians.
:54:29. > :54:33.of opportunity to gain more time. Remember, their time in the 107.9.
:54:34. > :54:36.of opportunity to gain more time. The Slovenians come in the final,
:54:37. > :54:42.have gone more quickly, and they were clean, so this is a real
:54:43. > :54:47.challenge for Florence. Looking good at the moment, steering themselves
:54:48. > :54:55.into the tricky 14-15 sequence. Now, how much are they made of that
:54:56. > :55:02.lost time? We are going to find out. Past the time there. It is not
:55:03. > :55:11.impossible. This has got to be absolutely textbook. On top of the
:55:12. > :55:19.pile now, driving in right around the back to keep calm. A tricky
:55:20. > :55:24.downstream gate to go but we have seen a lot of time lost, though.
:55:25. > :55:32.Slovenia have the advantage. Come on. 106.57. Can they do it? Not
:55:33. > :55:41.today. Slovenia are going to take the honours. They miss the podium.
:55:42. > :55:51.Germany and Slovakia occupy the podium today. The Slovenians, it is
:55:52. > :55:55.an excellent run and to be inside Florence and Hounslow's time was
:55:56. > :55:58.going to be hard to become the semifinals, and so it proved. I
:55:59. > :56:05.guess, a little disappointment for the fans, but they gave it their
:56:06. > :56:09.best. You have to say, hats off to the Slovenians, who take the first
:56:10. > :56:16.World Cup Canadian doubles. Germany and second and the Skantar boys, the
:56:17. > :56:22.European champions, in third place on the podium. Richard, how would
:56:23. > :56:30.you assess that race? A little disappointing. The good thing is the
:56:31. > :56:34.pace was there. The same as the European champions last weekend. For
:56:35. > :56:37.us, it's a good thing. It's difficult to have touches and be
:56:38. > :56:43.slow. You don't know where you are going to get the time from. A couple
:56:44. > :56:46.of silly touches from us but a lot of positives to take away from it
:56:47. > :56:51.and hopefully, go forward this season and the World Championships
:56:52. > :56:59.in September. How do you think about running the rest of the season? Will
:57:00. > :57:04.the C2 be the priority? You have the golden C1 to look back on. They are
:57:05. > :57:11.of equal significance, we treat them both seriously. We would do more
:57:12. > :57:15.training in the individual boats. Yet, we will be racing for the rest
:57:16. > :57:20.of the season and look forward to it. It's not often you see a
:57:21. > :57:25.downbeat David Florence, but Helen, they were disappointed after that
:57:26. > :57:28.run, weren't they? Absolutely able to get on home territory. They
:57:29. > :57:33.would've hoped to get on the podium and they are capable of it. Two
:57:34. > :57:38.touches, too costly. It's about being fasting clean. We saw plenty
:57:39. > :57:43.about those amazing British performances in the early events.
:57:44. > :57:45.Check out some highlights from the medal performances. David Florence
:57:46. > :57:49.obviously was on his game and looked fantastic. He commanded it
:57:50. > :57:58.obviously was on his game and looked start to finish. And the two girls.
:57:59. > :58:03.It shows good of element. Overall, for Slalom canoe, it's on the up and
:58:04. > :58:07.up, building and building. It is. Consistency is so much better, the
:58:08. > :58:11.medals are coming regularly. It just shows, the development is coming
:58:12. > :58:17.through and we have got such a big variety paddlers out there. For the
:58:18. > :58:20.home nation, the World Championships next ago another great event for
:58:21. > :58:24.people to come and see. It will and it's brilliant for us as a nation
:58:25. > :58:27.because we don't have many international competitions and to
:58:28. > :58:33.have it so close to the Olympics is great. We are on the water again
:58:34. > :58:38.before rolling this time. The rubbing World Cup in France. We will
:58:39. > :58:45.see it live next Sunday on the red button at ten a.m.. You can catch
:58:46. > :58:51.the highlights with John in the dale on BBC Two at four p.m.. That's it
:58:52. > :58:53.from Lee Valley and from a sport which is slowly and surely becoming
:58:54. > :58:57.a must see event.
