0:02:06 > 0:02:11- Tom Maldwyn Pryce was born and - raised in the rural Vale of Clwyd.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15- He had a keen interest in - racing cars right from the outset.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20- I remembering him coming home - and doing his homework at night.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23- He'd lie on the floor - doing his homework.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29- On the back of his homework book, - he had pictures of motor cars.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33- When he went to school the following - morning, all his sums were wrong...

0:02:33 > 0:02:36- ..but the pictures of motor cars - were very accurate.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44- He worked on a bread round - at night, on the bread van.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47- The fields - were quite slippery and muddy...

0:02:48 > 0:02:51- ..and he'd put his foot down - and swing the vehicle around...

0:02:52 > 0:02:54- ..until the bread and cakes - flew everywhere.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27- I had to change them for the - right one, for the right strength.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30- It was too late by then anyway.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33- That's not a big problem though.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37- No, it's just a new motor problem. - We have problems with new motors.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40- The car seemed to be flying - until then.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43- Yes, it was moving extremely well.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49- I wasn't going to try - anything fantastic.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32- It's very strange. The memories - flood back, as if it were yesterday.

0:05:34 > 0:05:39- The first photo is of Token, - in Silverstone at that time.

0:05:40 > 0:05:45- I remember him being very excited - about his first race.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49- We all hoped he would win the race - but he didn't have a chance.

0:05:49 > 0:05:50- He had a brand new car.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54- They only finished building it - the previous night.

0:05:54 > 0:05:59- The mechanics were too tired, - to take the car to Silverstone.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03- Maldwyn drove the lorry overnight - to Silverstone...

0:06:04 > 0:06:06- ..and he was racing - the following morning.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09- We were stood on the first corner.

0:06:09 > 0:06:14- He spun on the first corner - but continued with the race.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17- As you heard him say, - his gear lever was broken.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19- That was the end of the race - for him.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23- There have been complaints - that the sport has changed so much.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26- These were different drivers - in a different era.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30- You heard them say, - "He drove the wheels off the car."

0:06:30 > 0:06:35- He was a superb driver. In the rain, - in wet weather, he was incredible.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39- He would be mentioned in - the same breath as Lauda and Hunt.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47- He was so disappointed in Monaco, - he wanted to drive in that race.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24- ..but the petrol - was coming through his jacket.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28- He won the race - and people in Formula 1...

0:07:32 > 0:07:35- This was a time when racing drivers - were famous around the world...

0:07:36 > 0:07:38- ..and there were - one or two playboys too.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41- The man from Ruthin - wasn't one of them.

0:07:41 > 0:07:46- He was a very quiet man. He was shy, - he didn't like talking to the media.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50- When he was racing, you couldn't - speak to him before a race.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52- You stayed out of the way.

0:07:52 > 0:07:57- He had close friends, closer than I - was, and they attended the races...

0:07:57 > 0:08:00- ..but you left him alone - before a race.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02- All he wanted to do was race.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06- Once the race was over, he would - head straight for his caravan.

0:08:06 > 0:08:11- He had no desire to be a star.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15- He was one of the sport's quiet men.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18- The sport has changed so much today.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21- Was he a star in Wales at the time?

0:08:22 > 0:08:24- It's odd how things happen. - Back then, no.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27- When he was on top of his game...

0:08:27 > 0:08:32- ..I never thought he had - the praise he deserved in Wales.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38- He was a Welsh hero. He received - more attention after his death.

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- People didn't realise - how good he was at the time.

0:08:47 > 0:08:51- Part of the story is the horrific - end to Tom Pryce's life.

0:08:52 > 0:08:53- Exactly 40 years ago to this day, - this part of the story ended.

0:08:54 > 0:09:00- The horrific crash - at the South African Grand Prix.

0:09:01 > 0:09:06- Pryce had qualified first at the - Kyalami Grand Prix in South Africa.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10- But during the race - on Sunday March 5, 1977...

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- ..exactly 40 years ago today...

0:09:13 > 0:09:16- ..Pryce was tragically - killed in an accident.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20- Renzo Zorzi's car had broken down - on the side of the track.

0:09:20 > 0:09:25- A 19-year-old steward raced onto the - track with a fire extinguisher...

0:09:25 > 0:09:28- ..right into the path - of Pryce's car.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30- Both were killed on the spot.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33- Pryce's family - still remember that sad day.

0:09:36 > 0:09:40- I was listening to the radio - to try and hear what was happening.

0:09:40 > 0:09:44- I heard about it there.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48- Gwyneth was out on her rounds - working as a district nurse.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52- There were people - waving at me from their houses.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54- I didn't understand - what they wanted.

0:09:54 > 0:09:59- I went into some house in Pwllglas.

0:09:59 > 0:10:04- I would always put the news - on the radio before leaving there.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08- For some reason that was - the only day I ever decided...

0:10:08 > 0:10:10- ..not to switch on that radio.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15- I could see another district nurse - coming up behind me.

0:10:15 > 0:10:21- I reached the gate at home and - there were people waiting for me.

0:10:21 > 0:10:26- I was immediately fearful - that there had been an accident.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30- I must say - a cold shiver ran down my back.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35- A couple of the journalists - were staring at me.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39- I suppose they were - sensation seekers.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- I'm sure they'd heard before I had.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46- Then Alan Rees came up and said - "Nella, there's been an accident.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48- "A bad accident - and Thomas has been killed."

0:10:49 > 0:10:50- I couldn't believe it.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54- You just don't because - it's such an extraordinary thing...

0:10:54 > 0:10:55- ..for someone to say to you.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59- I couldn't possibly take it in, - just like that.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05- Tom Pryce died exactly - 40 years ago to this day.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38- It's hard to comprehend - hearing such sad news.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01- Niki Lauda had a serious accident - the previous year. He almost died.
