:00:37. > :00:41.Hello and welcome to Commonwealth Games Sportsday from Glasgow.
:00:42. > :00:45.I'm Karthi Gnanasegaram. This is your final stop of the
:00:46. > :00:48.evening for all of the best action from today and we'll get everything
:00:49. > :00:50.in before midnight, I promise. Coming up on the programme.
:00:51. > :01:01.Bolt produces a breathtaking performance
:01:02. > :01:04.and a Games record for Jamaica as they take relay gold. Making history
:01:05. > :01:07.in the Hydro - Nicola Adams wins the first gold awarded to a female
:01:08. > :01:10.boxer at the Commonwealth Games. Daley retains his 10m platform
:01:11. > :01:19.title as England reach double medal figures in diving.
:01:20. > :01:21.Good evening from Glasgow. This is Commonwealth Games Sportsday. 250
:01:22. > :01:25.handmade gold medals have been awarded to athletes so far and there
:01:26. > :01:31.are more to come tomorrow but it has been a very soggy Saturday at
:01:32. > :01:33.Hampden Park. Usain Bolt sealed his superstar status with Commonwealth
:01:34. > :01:38.gold, the only medal missing from his collection. There were
:01:39. > :01:41.impressive performances on the track and field from English and Welsh
:01:42. > :01:43.athletes but Jamaica certainly enjoyed tonight's party. Patrick
:01:44. > :01:55.Gearey has our final round up of athletics action from these Games.
:01:56. > :02:06.Here he goes, Usain Bolt has it in his hand. Jamaica go clear. The
:02:07. > :02:11.Usain Bolt show starts. Jamaica qualified. How do you beat the
:02:12. > :02:15.world's fastest nation? Covering the track with raid might be a start.
:02:16. > :02:23.That had stopped by the time the relay team entered the arena. Usain
:02:24. > :02:30.Bolt danced to The Proclaimers song. And then prepared for an iconic 100
:02:31. > :02:40.metres. Usain Bolt has the baton in his hand. Usain Bolt takes the
:02:41. > :02:47.title. It is Glasgow gold for Usain Bolt and Jamaica. England's Danny
:02:48. > :02:52.Talbot battled to live with the legend. The English came away with a
:02:53. > :02:57.silver. The attention was where it always is, with Jamaica and Usain
:02:58. > :03:01.Bolt. Makers of a lasting game 's memory. The female sprinters were
:03:02. > :03:07.Jamaica had broken their games record before the final and it
:03:08. > :03:13.became clear they would do it again. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will storm
:03:14. > :03:18.to gold. An astonishing statement of Jamaica's sprinting class. There was
:03:19. > :03:24.a significant bronze medal for an English quartet, also. England had
:03:25. > :03:28.been competitive through the men's 4 x 400 metres. It came down to
:03:29. > :03:37.Matthew Hudson-Smith and the Bahamas' Chris Brown. He leads the
:03:38. > :03:41.gold. Hardly the weather for sunglasses, but they will go well
:03:42. > :03:45.with the gold medal. The England women's team were some way behind
:03:46. > :03:49.the Jamaicans are Nigerians, but finished well clear of Australia to
:03:50. > :03:55.take the bronze. This was no night to be in the field. The weather
:03:56. > :04:01.delayed non-track events. Wales' Sally Peake held on tight and got a
:04:02. > :04:05.silver medal. For all the superstars of the show, perhaps the achievement
:04:06. > :04:10.of the evening was Jo Pavey's, the 40-year-old mother of two, who
:04:11. > :04:14.battled with the Kenyan runners and going into the straight they passed
:04:15. > :04:16.her, but the English runner came back one last time. On a golden
:04:17. > :04:22.night, the bravest of bronze medals. The Hydro can certainly rival
:04:23. > :04:26.Hampden Park for history tonight. Just behind me is the venue for the
:04:27. > :04:28.boxing finals and it has been emotional in there. Nicola Adams
:04:29. > :04:31.became the first female ever to win Commonwealth boxing Gold. England's
:04:32. > :04:35.Savannah Marshall also won this evening. While the hosts Scotland
:04:36. > :04:38.secured two more podium topping finishes. Northern Ireland have also
:04:39. > :04:40.had an historic night with their best tally of 9 boxing medals -
:04:41. > :05:01.two of them gold. Tim Hague reports.
:05:02. > :05:10.Here she is on the cusp of claiming the first women's Olympic boxing
:05:11. > :05:20.gold medal. Nicola Adams of Great Britain has just made history. She
:05:21. > :05:27.has done it once and did it again by becoming the first female to win a
:05:28. > :05:32.Commonwealth Games gold medal. But she had to get past 21-year-old from
:05:33. > :05:37.Northern Ireland first. Michaela Walsh. 11 years younger and full of
:05:38. > :05:47.fire and desire. It seems the Olympic champion done enough, but
:05:48. > :05:52.only just. It was a split decision. I am over the moon and overwhelmed.
:05:53. > :05:54.I cannot believe the support I have had through the tournament and I
:05:55. > :06:02.would like to thank everybody who turned up to date and supported me
:06:03. > :06:07.at home. I feel like I have been cheated from a medal. It is not her
:06:08. > :06:12.fault. She is the Olympic champion, they will give it to her. Nicola
:06:13. > :06:19.Adams wasn't the only woman to win gold. Savannah Marshall made it two
:06:20. > :06:23.from two. In men's finals, the home nations dominated with Paddy Barnes
:06:24. > :06:30.of Northern Ireland proving himself once again. He becomes the first
:06:31. > :06:34.British boxer to defend a Commonwealth title ever. His day got
:06:35. > :06:42.better when his friend and roommate Michael Conlan did as well. What of
:06:43. > :06:46.the Scottish finalist? Charlie Flynn had everyone on their feet with his
:06:47. > :06:54.performance. He got the gold medal and talked a good game. Sometimes
:06:55. > :07:02.you need to beat awkwardness. That was the case. It was a hard fight. I
:07:03. > :07:07.am well winded. It looked like his countrymen Josh Taylor was feeling
:07:08. > :07:12.it, but a dog or display of Scottish grit saw him through. The host
:07:13. > :07:18.nation's most successful Commonwealth Games ever got better
:07:19. > :07:22.and better. The old enemy England cannot complain. Top of the medals
:07:23. > :07:29.table and two further gold medals thanks to Scott which Gerald and
:07:30. > :07:33.Anthony Fowler. Both were totally dominant. Before it was left to Joe
:07:34. > :07:38.Joyce in the superheavyweight final to close the show and he did so in
:07:39. > :07:43.perfect styles. Another historic day for the home nations.
:07:44. > :07:48.Quite a medal tally being notched up by home nations boxers while at the
:07:49. > :07:51.Royal Commonwealth Pool it was England leading the way with double
:07:52. > :07:53.medal figures in diving. Tom Daley retained his 10m platform title and
:07:54. > :07:55.alongside Hannah Starling's springboard bronze this has been
:07:56. > :07:56.England's most successful Commonwealth Games for the sport.
:07:57. > :08:08.Nick Hope reports. Since claiming the Olympic bronze at
:08:09. > :08:13.2012 Olympics Tom Daley has been plagued by the Demon dive, the back
:08:14. > :08:16.to an a half somersault to the heart with routine has seen him miss out
:08:17. > :08:21.on medals over the past two years. He claimed to have dealt with it
:08:22. > :08:24.before the competition but in the preliminary he was struggling. His
:08:25. > :08:29.other dive saw him through to the final. There he would deliver a
:08:30. > :08:36.better return on his least favourite routine. It is better than this
:08:37. > :08:40.morning. The Australian 2008 champion struggled from the early
:08:41. > :08:47.round and there was no one to push Tom Daley as Tom Daley successfully
:08:48. > :08:51.defended his title he won in Delhi. Hannah Starling is not fazed by the
:08:52. > :08:56.big occasion. Each dive was greeted with a wave to her parents before
:08:57. > :09:03.delivering a solid routine. Others had more difficult dives, but Hannah
:09:04. > :09:08.Starling was consistent. England finish with an incredible total of
:09:09. > :09:11.ten medals, a confidence boost to the team ahead of the European
:09:12. > :09:12.Championships in less than two weeks.
:09:13. > :09:16.Let's have a look at some of the penultimate day's other news.
:09:17. > :09:19.England's women's hockey team were just 11 seconds away from winning
:09:20. > :09:23.the gold medal - but instead lost on a penalty shootout. Lily Owsley had
:09:24. > :09:25.given England a 1-0 lead but a late Australian equaliser took the game
:09:26. > :09:28.to penalties. Australia won the shoot out 3-1. Disappointment for
:09:29. > :09:31.England's men as well, they lost their semi final against Australia
:09:32. > :09:39.4-1 and will play a bronze medal match against New Zealand tomorrow.
:09:40. > :09:41.It was gold, silver and bronze for England in the table tennis mixed
:09:42. > :09:45.doubles. Husband and wife team, Paul and Joanna Drinkhall top the podium
:09:46. > :09:50.after a net cord at the end of their final against 15-year-old Tin-Tin Ho
:09:51. > :09:53.and Liam Pitchford. Kelly Sibley and Danny Reed took bronze. Pitchford
:09:54. > :09:57.also claimed bronze in the men's singles.
:09:58. > :10:00.Silver and bronze for England too in the women's squash doubles. Laura
:10:01. > :10:02.Massaro and Jenny Duncalf lost to the fifth seeds, Indian pair Dipika
:10:03. > :10:06.Pallikal and Joshana Chinappa to take silver, as they did four years
:10:07. > :10:13.ago. While Emma Beddoes and Alison Waters claimed bronze.
:10:14. > :10:16.Amantle Montsho of Botswana, who finished fourth in the women's 400
:10:17. > :10:18.metre final earlier this week, has been provisionally suspended from
:10:19. > :10:21.the Games after testing positive for a banned stimulant. Testing of a
:10:22. > :10:30.second sample will take place on Monday.
:10:31. > :10:33.There was a silver medal in the para-sport powerlifting lightweight
:10:34. > :10:35.competition for England's Natalie Blake. While her compatriot Ali
:10:36. > :10:38.Jawad took bronze in the men's event. The top honours though were
:10:39. > :10:41.taken by international athletes. With news of those and some of the
:10:42. > :10:42.more surprising moments you might have missed here's the eagle eyed
:10:43. > :10:55.Drew Savage. Singapore signed off with five gold
:10:56. > :11:05.medals in table tennis. Success guaranteed in the singles.
:11:06. > :11:08.Singapore's women were unstoppable. They contested the singles final
:11:09. > :11:12.yesterday and in the doubles were too good for Australia. The last
:11:13. > :11:18.night of boxing provided blood, sweat and tears. This 18-year-old
:11:19. > :11:22.was overwhelmed after taking the light heavyweight title in New
:11:23. > :11:27.Zealand. And a sweet night for the man known as sweet Sammy. He struck
:11:28. > :11:31.Commonwealth gold for Canada at the age of 33. Not a bad night for the
:11:32. > :11:42.Australians with Shelley what's winning the first lightweight gold
:11:43. > :11:58.medal. -- Watts. Two gold medals for Nigeria in the para-sport
:11:59. > :12:06.powerlifting. Loveline Obiji was successful in the heavyweight class.
:12:07. > :12:12.Relieved to finally get the better of England in the deciding game in
:12:13. > :12:15.the semifinals, the Indian needed five match points to clinch it. That
:12:16. > :12:19.was not his lucky racket! He will hope for a better souvenir in
:12:20. > :12:26.tomorrow's final. Drew Savage.
:12:27. > :12:29.Badminton still has five gold medals to be won tomorrow but the table
:12:30. > :12:31.on this penultimate day of action has England top with 56 golds.
:12:32. > :12:34.England can't be surpassed by Australia who are on 45 gold
:12:35. > :12:37.medals Canada are in third place above the Hosts, Scotland,
:12:38. > :12:45.who have smashed their previous best of 33 medals - Scotland now with 52
:12:46. > :12:48.in total, 19 of them gold. Wales are in 12th with 4 golds
:12:49. > :12:54.Northern Ireland's boxing medals today means
:12:55. > :13:00.We have been taking a look behind the scenes of the Commonwealth
:13:01. > :13:04.Games. The medals are beautiful, but some athletes have not been too
:13:05. > :13:11.careful with them. It is the nightmare sub -- scenario. That
:13:12. > :13:20.moment when you cannot remember where your medal in -- medal is. And
:13:21. > :13:28.Nicola Adams creating history, she said, I did it. This is her with
:13:29. > :13:34.Clyde. Apparently he is sold out. A lot of athletes say they are happy
:13:35. > :13:38.with the games. The pictures of Usain Bolt this evening,
:13:39. > :13:40.unbelievable. The action has been incredible. I looked back at some of
:13:41. > :13:51.the more memorable moments. It gives me the greatest pleasure to
:13:52. > :14:12.declare the 20th Commonwealth Games open. It started with a bang. Could
:14:13. > :14:17.the sport live up to the billing? Some of the big stars were missing,
:14:18. > :14:24.but those who signed up were ready to create their own Commonwealth
:14:25. > :14:29.dreams. Alistair Brownlee is now the Commonwealth champion. The big guns
:14:30. > :14:39.came out blazing and most hit the target. I am dying, but I am not
:14:40. > :14:46.losing the race! Some weathered under the dish Mac withered under
:14:47. > :14:51.the weight of expectation. It was an emotional end of the road for some
:14:52. > :14:55.of them, but others had an unbelievable start to their journey.
:14:56. > :15:04.Under the spotlight, those who dared to dream delivered. The people of
:15:05. > :15:07.Scotland have embraced it. A teenager's twists and turns lead to
:15:08. > :15:16.gold medals galore. Claudia Fragapane. There were flips and
:15:17. > :15:22.flops. And roofs were raised by huge crowds as records fell and new
:15:23. > :15:26.champions were crowned. The king of the track caused controversy. What
:15:27. > :15:35.do you think of the games? They are awesome. When he got down to
:15:36. > :15:41.business, he was like lightning. The rain fell, but mostly the sun shone.
:15:42. > :15:44.The fans flocked. They witnessed emotional moments. This meant
:15:45. > :15:48.everything and there was no way I would go through everything I have
:15:49. > :15:54.been through and not get a medal today. Those who did not come missed
:15:55. > :16:04.a fantastic party. We thank Glasgow for it. Tomorrow night, the sun will
:16:05. > :16:08.set on the 20th Commonwealth Games and the baton will be passed to the
:16:09. > :16:13.gold coast of Australia. I think you were trying to make me cry with that
:16:14. > :16:19.piece. What was your favourite memory?
:16:20. > :16:27.Probably the side of a 13-year-old girl of the Shetland Islands,
:16:28. > :16:35.realising she had taken a bronze medal. And, Usain Bolt, dancing to
:16:36. > :16:44.the Proclaimers. I hear he is DJ in town, I wonder if he has 500 Miles
:16:45. > :16:45.on the wheels of steel. Thank you for giving us a behind-the-scenes
:16:46. > :16:49.glimpse. That is it for Commonwealth Games
:16:50. > :16:53.Sportsday on BBC One on the day that
