:00:00. > :00:00.dismantled. It hit rocks two and a half years ago. As promised, let's

:00:00. > :00:41.go live to Glasgow now for the Commonwealth Games sports day.

:00:42. > :00:44.Hello and welcome to Commonwealth Games Sportsday with me John Watson.

:00:45. > :00:54.books his place in the Semi Finals of the 100 metres.

:00:55. > :00:58.The last five golds up for grabs in the cycling,

:00:59. > :01:01.England's Laura Trott wins one of those in the Women's Points Race.

:01:02. > :01:09.And a golden day as England win two shooting Golds

:01:10. > :01:17.at Carnoustie. Well, it's been the start of all of the Athletics

:01:18. > :01:33.Mo Farah was meant to be the man winning one of those

:01:34. > :01:37.in the Men's 5000 metres final, but in his absence it left it open for

:01:38. > :01:47.Another gold was won in the Women's Para`Sport Long Jump final.

:01:48. > :01:51.It's been a good day for England's sprinters in the heats of the 100

:01:52. > :01:53.metres. Andy Swiss was watching all

:01:54. > :02:08.the action there. It's been a packed day off athletics

:02:09. > :02:12.at Hampden Park. The 5000 metres final turned into a battle of the

:02:13. > :02:19.Kenyans in the absence of Mo Farah. The world indoor champion was the

:02:20. > :02:23.favourite and he lived up to his billing, leading into the home

:02:24. > :02:33.straight sprinting clear of his Kenyan rival to clinch the gold

:02:34. > :02:37.medal. A fantastic performance, proving how he won the world title

:02:38. > :02:42.indoors over 3000 metres last year. There was better news for the home

:02:43. > :02:48.teams in the para sports long jump, the other medal decided here today.

:02:49. > :02:53.A silver medal for England's Bethany Woodward. She's a world champion on

:02:54. > :02:57.the track. She has converted to long jump and produced her personal best

:02:58. > :03:08.of four metres to win the silver medal in that event. The first medal

:03:09. > :03:12.for England in the track and field. It's been a good day for all three

:03:13. > :03:20.of England's sprinters who qualified for their 100 metre heats. It was a

:03:21. > :03:24.particularly good day for Adam Gemili. We have known about his

:03:25. > :03:29.talent for a while now, he reached the final of the World Championship

:03:30. > :03:34.200 metres last year. He was here today in the 100 metres heats and

:03:35. > :03:40.was very impressive with 10.15 seconds, the fastest of all the

:03:41. > :03:45.qualifiers. He qualified very comfortably for tomorrow night's

:03:46. > :03:50.semifinal. Adam Gemili, just 21 years old. We heard about him in the

:03:51. > :03:55.build`up to London 2012, and he's showing the sort of form that could

:03:56. > :03:59.get him into contention for a medal. He said afterwards that he was

:04:00. > :04:03.delighted. I had no clue about the past heats. I just wanted to execute

:04:04. > :04:07.the first half of my race which I think I did, trying to relax as much

:04:08. > :04:10.as I could on the second half of my race which I think I did, trying to

:04:11. > :04:13.relax as much as I could on the second`half. Semifinals tomorrow,

:04:14. > :04:18.the zing and looking forward to it. Good news for England's two other

:04:19. > :04:24.competitors in the men's 100 metres. Richard Kielty, the indoor

:04:25. > :04:28.champion over 600 metres `` 60 metres, he has had trouble

:04:29. > :04:31.converting that speed into 100 metres but he qualified for the

:04:32. > :04:39.semifinals in joint second place in his heat, and Harry Akins also got

:04:40. > :04:45.through to the semifinals as one of the fastest losers finishing third

:04:46. > :04:50.in a heat won by an athlete from the Cayman Islands. He's hoping to

:04:51. > :04:58.become the first man from the Cayman Islands to win Commonwealth medal.

:04:59. > :05:00.When the fastest men in the Commonwealth take to the start line

:05:01. > :05:06.for the 100 metres final there will be no use saying old or yohan Blake.

:05:07. > :05:11.But there will also be no shortage of confidence in the men hoping to

:05:12. > :05:17.take gold in their absence. `` no Usain Bolt. Thanks for coming,

:05:18. > :05:21.Glasgow. Watch out tomorrow. The man from the Cayman Islands is hoping to

:05:22. > :05:24.become the first man from his country to win a medal at the

:05:25. > :05:29.Commonwealth Games in what some are saying is the most open 100 metres

:05:30. > :05:36.in the competition's history. I would say yes, we still have guys

:05:37. > :05:41.running nine, guys who have already run nine for the year, but there is

:05:42. > :05:46.still the possibility for anyone to end up under ten seconds again and

:05:47. > :05:52.be an upset for the one, two and three. He's a man in form, winning

:05:53. > :05:56.in his last four meets. He's also one of a select group running under

:05:57. > :05:58.the magic ten second mark. All of this while graduating from

:05:59. > :06:04.university with an economics degree in America. My mother told me from

:06:05. > :06:08.the start, she told me to go to school for a degree. At that point

:06:09. > :06:13.in time I did not know what I would choose. I was in marketing for a

:06:14. > :06:18.time but economics is definitely something I felt more comfortable

:06:19. > :06:23.about and that is why I went for it. I came out victorious, I got my

:06:24. > :06:28.degree. It was hard alongside the track meets and stuff but I was able

:06:29. > :06:32.to overcome everything. That ability to overcome is something the

:06:33. > :06:36.sprinter will need if he's to make history in Glasgow. What he would

:06:37. > :06:41.give to be on the real podium on Monday.

:06:42. > :06:49.What a story that would be if he could take a place on the podium.

:06:50. > :06:55.What about the women's 100 metre heats today? It was good news in the

:06:56. > :06:58.women's 100 metre heats for all three of England's competitors who

:06:59. > :07:04.are safely through to the semifinals tomorrow, Asha Phillips is among

:07:05. > :07:12.them, qualifying second in her heat behind one of the favourites,

:07:13. > :07:16.blessing of Nigeria. Phillips has had her injury problems over the

:07:17. > :07:19.years so will be satisfied with that result, safely through to the

:07:20. > :07:28.semifinals tomorrow with England's two other competitors. Amy Foster,

:07:29. > :07:31.from Northern Ireland, is also through to the semifinals, an

:07:32. > :07:38.experienced athlete at 25 years old and you came second in her heat with

:07:39. > :07:43.a time of 11.62 seconds. An excellent result from Jamie Foster.

:07:44. > :07:48.An experienced athlete. This is a real step up for her so to get

:07:49. > :07:55.through to the semifinals is no mean achievement. Those semifinals will

:07:56. > :07:59.take place tomorrow. Live from Hampden Park, thank you. Taking you

:08:00. > :08:06.back to events which kicked off the day.

:08:07. > :08:10.But before all of that let's begin with the first gold medals that

:08:11. > :08:14.They were in the men and women's marathon which began

:08:15. > :08:17.in Glasgow Green just to the East of the centre of the city.

:08:18. > :08:19.Australia's Mark Shelly took gold, running a personal best.

:08:20. > :08:21.Whilst Kenya's Flomena Cheyech Daniel topped the podium

:08:22. > :08:27.With Usain Bolt now in town today it was a marathon, not a sprint, that

:08:28. > :08:32.started off the athletics. The 25 men were out first and despite

:08:33. > :08:36.missing major stars there were still some great stories, not least the

:08:37. > :08:41.England runner at the front who until seven years ago was 16 and a

:08:42. > :08:45.half stone, 20 cigarettes a day and a takeaway addict. There were seven

:08:46. > :08:51.home nation athletes among the women's group. This is the biggest

:08:52. > :08:56.spectating weekend of the games, one of the biggest free events here and

:08:57. > :09:01.big crowds are expected here to pack the finishing line at Glasgow Green.

:09:02. > :09:05.Fans were in great voice for the culmination of both races. They

:09:06. > :09:08.might have been expecting to see East Africans dominating but the

:09:09. > :09:11.Australian, Michael Shelley, upset the apple cart. With a grimace on

:09:12. > :09:21.his face, the medallist from Delhi claimed gold

:09:22. > :09:26.this time. I'm very excited. Having to pinch myself. We've had some

:09:27. > :09:30.great Australians win it in the past and I'm very excited now. The

:09:31. > :09:34.highest place home athlete was Scotland's Derek Hawkins in ninth.

:09:35. > :09:43.Behind him was the reformed couch potato, Stephen Wayne. The top goal

:09:44. > :09:46.was the personal best and double record so I've nailed all three so

:09:47. > :09:53.I'll have a drink. First and second for Kenya in the women's race.

:09:54. > :09:59.Australia won their second marathon medal as a smiling competitor took

:10:00. > :10:03.bronze and probably burst into tears when it dawned on her what she had

:10:04. > :10:12.done. Scotland's Susan Partridge came in sixth.

:10:13. > :10:35.Moving on to the cycling from the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome. It was

:10:36. > :10:39.extremely close towards the end of this one, Laura Trott finished

:10:40. > :10:47.second in the points race which was good enough to take the gold medal.

:10:48. > :10:55.Darker of Wales took silver with Scotland taking bronze. `` Barker. I

:10:56. > :11:03.thought I was dying but there's no way I'm losing this race. Giving it

:11:04. > :11:04.that little bit more to get to the finish line. One more goal is to

:11:05. > :11:09.tell you about. They set a new games record

:11:10. > :11:28.in the process beating the We knew they would be quick from the

:11:29. > :11:31.sprinter the other day. To get on the bike and go through the

:11:32. > :11:33.processes, we have worked so hard for this, all of the long hours on

:11:34. > :11:44.the track, the heavy gym sessions, She was one up

:11:45. > :12:06.after an illegal move on the track Gold and silver both went to

:12:07. > :12:10.Australia. I'm really happy. To come away with a bronze in the sprint

:12:11. > :12:14.competition is probably the best achievement of the games. Got beaten

:12:15. > :12:20.by Anna yesterday in the semifinals but to come out again today and win

:12:21. > :12:29.is really good. It's good for the head as well. One of several events

:12:30. > :12:36.taking place at the Chris Hoy velodrome. These are live pictures,

:12:37. > :12:42.31 laps to go in the culmination of the men's 21 kilometres scratch

:12:43. > :12:54.finals. `` 20 kilometres scratch finals.

:12:55. > :13:02.29 laps to go on this one. You can watch it live on BBC1.

:13:03. > :13:05.England have enjoyed a golden day at the shooting centre.

:13:06. > :13:09.It was an all English final in the men's double trap,

:13:10. > :13:11.where Sussex's Steve Scott produced a faultless display

:13:12. > :13:15.in the final to beat compatriot Matthew French by one target.

:13:16. > :13:18.Both men survived a shoot off in the semi final to guarantee Gold

:13:19. > :13:23.It's Scott's second Commonwealth Gold, after winning

:13:24. > :13:43.for England in the women's Shooting Double Trap final, including gold

:13:44. > :13:49.She finished on 94 points ahead of Shereyasi Singh of India,

:13:50. > :13:54.And Kerwood's compatriot Rachel Parrish also went on to take

:13:55. > :13:56.bronze after winning her shoot`off with Canada's Cynthia Meyer.

:13:57. > :14:43.We're going to bring you the news away from Glasgow in a second, but

:14:44. > :14:45.we've still got plenty of action from here in Glasgow to bring you.

:14:46. > :14:49.We'll see how the home nations are doing in the Rugby 7s `

:14:50. > :14:52.We'll also bring you some of the other highs and lows

:14:53. > :14:56.And we've a busy evening in the pool to come as well.

:14:57. > :15:00.England's Siobhan Marie`O'Connor is looking to add to her medal tally

:15:01. > :15:02.in the 200m individual medley final ` she already has three silvers

:15:03. > :15:05.and a bronze, we'll assess her chances of another a little later.

:15:06. > :15:09.But let's take a look at the Cricket now as England began the third test

:15:10. > :15:16.Alistair Cook easing some of the pressure as he came to within

:15:17. > :15:20.five runs of his first test century in 14 months as the hosts dominated

:15:21. > :15:38.Joe Wilson has been following the action Red Bull's

:15:39. > :15:45.Whatever state you are in when the umpire says it must start, it must

:15:46. > :15:50.start. If Alastair Cook plays for another decade, he may recall that

:15:51. > :15:55.moment is a reprieve. He was starting to look good, seriously.

:15:56. > :15:59.Advised by former captains to take a break, he battled to battle ``

:16:00. > :16:07.against his decline. There are others in need of a big score. Sam

:16:08. > :16:15.Robson fell for 56. But at the lunch, something unseen in 2014. In

:16:16. > :16:17.England's Captain Scott ring a second run and then greeting the

:16:18. > :16:23.crowd with a 50. He knew he still had to make the most of the

:16:24. > :16:31.opportunity. Gary Ballance was batting fluently, a partnership with

:16:32. > :16:35.Alistair Cooke passed 100. Alistair Cooke and 95. A faint touch and

:16:36. > :16:41.enough for the Empire `` umpire. There was one England batsmen who is

:16:42. > :16:49.making England seem routine. Gary Ballance with his third century of

:16:50. > :16:50.the summer. It is a foundation for big tree if England can remember

:16:51. > :16:54.that far back. Daniel Ricciardo won the Hungarian

:16:55. > :16:56.Grand Prix but it was Lewis Hamilton Having started in the pit lane

:16:57. > :17:01.after his Mercedes caught fire in qualifying yesterday he managed

:17:02. > :17:04.to fight his way up Ahead of Nico Rosberg who was

:17:05. > :17:08.fourth, having started on pole. Ferrari's Fernando

:17:09. > :17:20.Alonso was second. Lewis Hamilton said he would

:17:21. > :17:26.struggle to finish at all after having to start from the pit lane.

:17:27. > :17:31.It looks like his miserable run of luck would continue. While he was

:17:32. > :17:35.continuing to recover, Nico Rosberg was streaking into the distance,

:17:36. > :17:39.despite damage to his front wing, Hamilton moved up to 13th. Then came

:17:40. > :17:45.the twist of fate that cost Nico Rosberg victory. Marcus Ericsson's

:17:46. > :17:52.crash brought the safety car out and a pit stop for Nico Rosberg dropped

:17:53. > :17:55.into fourth. When racing resumes, Daniel Ricciardo's desertion to opt

:17:56. > :18:00.for slick tyres saw him gained the lead. But then the lead Pastor

:18:01. > :18:07.Fernando Alonso. Hamilton was up to fifth and when Sebastian Vettel push

:18:08. > :18:11.too hard and Nico Rosberg dived into the pits, the Brit found himself in

:18:12. > :18:18.third. Within a lab he was in second and then with all of the pit stops

:18:19. > :18:23.done, there was only Alonso ahead. With new tyres, Rick Cardillo came

:18:24. > :18:34.diving through. Then he breezed past Alonzo to go on to secure his second

:18:35. > :18:44.win of the season. Hamilton survived a late charge from Nico Rosberg to

:18:45. > :18:52.hold onto third anchored the German's championship lead to 11

:18:53. > :18:55.points when he expected to fall further adrift. My heart was in my

:18:56. > :18:59.mouth. I did not know what was happening. I thought that was it,

:19:00. > :19:03.the championship is gone. We don't get the formation, the tyres and the

:19:04. > :19:09.brakes were cold. When I hit the brakes they locked and I was gone. I

:19:10. > :19:13.think a bit of luck saved me. If I have not had blocked until now, I

:19:14. > :19:15.think that was it. I am happy I have that cushion of luck.

:19:16. > :19:18.Vincenzo Nibali has been crowned Tour de France champion in Paris.

:19:19. > :19:21.Today's final stage ended in a sprint finish on the Champs

:19:22. > :19:24.Elysees with Marcel Kittel winning for the second year in a row.

:19:25. > :19:27.Nibali coasted home with the biggest winning margin for 17 years becoming

:19:28. > :19:35.He's also just the sixth man to win all three of cycling's Grand Tours,

:19:36. > :19:40.the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana.

:19:41. > :19:43.Women's World Champion Marianne Vos won the inaugural women's road race

:19:44. > :19:49.91 kilometre race, called La Course, came down to a sprint finish, where

:19:50. > :19:52.the Dutch rider pipped compatriot Kirsten Wild on the line.

:19:53. > :19:55.Britain's Lizzie Armistead crashed out with one kilometre to go.

:19:56. > :20:04.Back to matters here in Glasgow now, and let's take you to Hampden Park

:20:05. > :20:19.where the final day of the Rugby 7s is taking place right now.

:20:20. > :20:26.Wales were beaten by Australia. Also it wasn't a great day for England as

:20:27. > :20:31.they were beaten by a single point against Samoa. It was 15`14 against

:20:32. > :20:35.the English. Quite tried this during this match. An incredible

:20:36. > :20:42.achievement to get the ball over and state in touch. We will have another

:20:43. > :20:50.look at this one. Fantastic skill. It just goes to show what is being

:20:51. > :20:55.showcased at Ibrox. What of Scotland? Defeat was more emphatic,

:20:56. > :21:01.they lost 35`12 against South Africa. South Africa never really in

:21:02. > :21:12.trouble in this match but it did not stop a bit of handbags at the end.

:21:13. > :21:24.England's women beat Malaysia in the hockey. Penalty corner made the

:21:25. > :21:27.score 5`0. England and Australia are both unbeaten although Australia

:21:28. > :21:32.have played one game more and the two teams face each other tomorrow

:21:33. > :21:37.afternoon. Scholl's women were thrashed 9`0 by Australia. ``

:21:38. > :21:43.Scotland. They were overwhelmed in the second half. Another hat`trick

:21:44. > :21:53.from Jodie Kenny. There was also a heavy defeat for

:21:54. > :21:55.the net all is. They lost to Jamaica who have a 100% record. Scotland

:21:56. > :22:02.have lost two of their three matches so far.

:22:03. > :22:07.the semifinal of the squash competition heap beat Peter Barker

:22:08. > :22:17.3`0. He may face an English opponent in the final.

:22:18. > :22:21.Plenty going on at The Games with 14 sports happening in and around

:22:22. > :22:28.Glasgow. Lots to keep across and our reporter has been doing just that.

:22:29. > :22:33.The Commonwealth games aren't just a display of supreme ability

:22:34. > :22:42.opportunity to celebrate effort and determination. Embodying that spirit

:22:43. > :22:45.was this athlete from Nvidia who battled her body to make

:22:46. > :22:53.finish. The gloves are off in the boxing

:22:54. > :22:58.preliminaries. That is something I have never seen

:22:59. > :23:04.before. Unfortunately for him he could not overcome his wardrobe

:23:05. > :23:09.malfunction or his opponent. This 18`year`old from Singapore was

:23:10. > :23:13.getting people talking in the badminton. Ranked 198th in the

:23:14. > :23:19.world, she beat Malaysia on, but it wasn't enough for her country to

:23:20. > :23:25.progress to the gold medal match. Singapore were proving a thorn in

:23:26. > :23:31.Malaysia's side. Not that there was any need for them to take it out on

:23:32. > :23:37.each other. Right in the face! Those frustrations were even crossing

:23:38. > :23:43.sports. Singapore's women against Malaysia in the table tennis team

:23:44. > :23:52.event. Five gold medals on show, shame they only count for one in the

:23:53. > :23:55.medal table. The Malaysians found themselves on the end of another

:23:56. > :24:00.defeat, this time on the Bowling Green. Playing second fiddle to

:24:01. > :24:05.South Africa's Quartet. In the 63 kilograms weight lifting it was a

:24:06. > :24:12.fight for the gold. There was nothing to tell between them, but

:24:13. > :24:19.this lady took the title by virtue of her lighter weight.

:24:20. > :24:24.We also have a pack schedule in the pool. Swimmers competing for the

:24:25. > :24:28.home nations have 125 medals so are in the pool. Seven of them gold.

:24:29. > :24:34.There is potential for more tonight. A preview of the action now.

:24:35. > :24:37.We have seen some incredible performers so far. At that the

:24:38. > :24:43.disappointment of the London Olympics, you have to say so far

:24:44. > :24:48.this has exceeded all expectations. Can it continue? There is a good

:24:49. > :24:52.chance. Siobhan`Marie O'Connor will be going

:24:53. > :24:54.for gold and she already has three silver medals and a bronze medal.

:24:55. > :25:01.She was the quickest qualifier and that will also feature Hannah Miley

:25:02. > :25:05.and the Olympic silver medallist, Alicia Coutts of Australia.

:25:06. > :25:08.that will also feature Hannah Miley and the Olympic silver medallist, I

:25:09. > :25:12.was ranked second coming in. If you have a lane, you have a chance. We

:25:13. > :25:18.will see what happens. Another who impressed was just Carling of Wales
