:00:00. > :00:10.Stuff being applied to the eyebrows but the heads have been kept out of

:00:11. > :00:16.the way, I am pleased to say. First Commonwealth Games without head

:00:17. > :00:20.guards, remember. Northern Ireland's team boxing captain, Paddy

:00:21. > :00:24.Barnes, the most decorated man in Northern Ireland boxing history,

:00:25. > :00:28.with a couple of Olympic bronze medals, European gold and silver,

:00:29. > :00:31.Commonwealth Games gold, looking to become only the fourth man in

:00:32. > :00:41.Commonwealth Games boxing history to defend a title. The other two with

:00:42. > :00:55.decent Kenyans. In 1974 and 1978. And also in 1966 and 1970. And way

:00:56. > :01:02.back in 19 52. Paddy Barnes is about to be number four to defend his

:01:03. > :01:10.title, I am sure. Is there much left in the tank for the Indian? I don't

:01:11. > :01:15.think so. The difference is that Laishram has concentrated on power

:01:16. > :01:22.shots. But it is this bid of Barnes and the accuracy -- the speed of

:01:23. > :01:25.Barnes. If you concentrate on heavy shots like Laishram and you missed

:01:26. > :01:36.the target, you are going to tire, and that is what has happened. For

:01:37. > :01:42.me, Barnes is boxing to instruction and getting the tactics right. Both

:01:43. > :01:53.of them are now very much on flat feet. Barnes is like a snapping

:01:54. > :02:00.turtle that suddenly comes out of its shell and takes a nasty bite at

:02:01. > :02:04.you. I don't think Barnes is going to be denied. The pace has slowed

:02:05. > :02:11.considerably from both of them. It was only yesterday that they were

:02:12. > :02:15.across the road in the SECC in the 2000 capacity boxing Hall. Now we

:02:16. > :02:20.are in water which holds five or six times that, and it is packed. There

:02:21. > :02:25.will be a huge roar at the end of this contest if, as we expect, Paddy

:02:26. > :02:32.Barnes has justified his number-1 billing against the man who has

:02:33. > :02:38.justified his number two billing. Laishram will have to win by a

:02:39. > :02:42.country mile to get the decision. Barnes is not going to go away from

:02:43. > :02:46.this one. Can Paddy Barnes make history yet again in the boxing

:02:47. > :02:51.ring? First Irishman to win back-to-back Olympic medals. Will he

:02:52. > :02:55.be the first boxer from the Home Counties to win back-to-back

:02:56. > :03:01.Commonwealth gold? I think the answer is yes. Barnes is going to

:03:02. > :03:05.finish strongly. We are at the start of August, but here in Glasgow, I

:03:06. > :03:18.have a strong feeling that today is going to be Paddy 's's day. Barnes

:03:19. > :03:28.has got it! Paddy Barnes picks up a second successive gold medal. Close

:03:29. > :03:35.last round. You can't deny this fella. Good performance again. Chose

:03:36. > :03:40.to go on that front foot. This guy put so much power into every shot,

:03:41. > :03:44.and definitely tired towards the end of the first round going into the

:03:45. > :03:58.second. This guy got the tactics right. Works on the inside. Clever

:03:59. > :04:03.from Barnes. Look at the punch combination, then he goes back on

:04:04. > :04:08.the outside. The man from Belfast has got it for me. Technically,

:04:09. > :04:16.Barnes was the best boxer in the tournament from day one. It is a

:04:17. > :04:24.unanimous decision by the judges in favour of the winner, Gold

:04:25. > :04:31.medallist, in the blue corner representing Northern Ireland, Paddy

:04:32. > :04:40.Barnes! Two of the judges gave the last round to Devendro Laishram. But

:04:41. > :04:43.at the Barnes had done enough. Paddy Barnes makes history. First boxer

:04:44. > :04:49.from the Home Counties to defend a Commonwealth title. A fantastic

:04:50. > :04:56.performance by the Northern Ireland boxing captain, Paddy Barnes.

:04:57. > :04:59.We said from the word go that that would be a terror, Amir Khan. It

:05:00. > :05:08.was. You could not put them in a phone box. Paddy put in a great

:05:09. > :05:16.performance. A lot of punches were thrown in that fight. He was the

:05:17. > :05:20.better fighter. When there are just three rounds, when you have won the

:05:21. > :05:25.first, you are obviously in massive control because your opponent almost

:05:26. > :05:31.has to rethink his strategy cos he has got to get back to level pegging

:05:32. > :05:33.or he is out. Exactly. You only have three rounds to prove how good you

:05:34. > :05:38.are. If you get a good first three rounds to prove how good you

:05:39. > :05:46.you know you are going to win. Well, here is Paddy Barnes as he makes his

:05:47. > :05:50.way towards us. Well done, Paddy. You are the first man from any

:05:51. > :05:54.country in 40 years to retain a Commonwealth title at any division.

:05:55. > :06:06.What a great achievement. Not bad my eh? Tough fight? He is very strong

:06:07. > :06:09.and wiry. I did not have a game plan, I just stuck in. You have

:06:10. > :06:18.fought each other before, haven't you? We fought at the Olympics in

:06:19. > :06:23.London. The first round was always going to be key. In the commentary

:06:24. > :06:32.box, they could not call it. Did you know you had got it? Whoever wins

:06:33. > :06:37.the first round will win 90% of the time. So it was key to win. Michael

:06:38. > :06:43.Conlan, your roommate and friend, is fighting a bit later. He had that

:06:44. > :06:49.massive clash yesterday. How is he? Yeah, just a scratch. A scratch! He

:06:50. > :06:58.is one of the most talented boxers in the world. As you are sharing a

:06:59. > :07:04.room, how good would it be if you both had a gold medal? If he does

:07:05. > :07:11.not win, I am going to torture him. Congratulations. Retaining his

:07:12. > :07:14.title, the first boxer from the home nations ever to retain a

:07:15. > :07:18.Commonwealth Games boxing title. We are back here in a few moments.

:07:19. > :07:28.Well done to Paddy Barnes. Later this afternoon, Michael Conlan

:07:29. > :07:33.takes on England's cares --. That is it from E. Hazel Irvine will guide

:07:34. > :07:37.you through the rest of the boxing finals.

:07:38. > :07:42.Great atmosphere. Wonderful atmosphere. We shall enjoy that

:07:43. > :07:48.shortly. But there is news brewing, Jason. Northern Ireland started in

:07:49. > :07:54.20 Fourth Place on the overall medals table. Watch them shoot up

:07:55. > :07:58.that table today, courtesy of Paddy Barnes. And there are another two

:07:59. > :08:01.fighters from Northern Ireland to come this afternoon. Five fighters

:08:02. > :08:06.from the home nations to enjoy in the Hydro. But a lot has been

:08:07. > :08:12.happening and there is a big story brewing as well.

:08:13. > :08:15.England's netballers suffered an agonising semifinal defeat to

:08:16. > :08:21.defending champions New Zealand, who won 35-34 in the last into which

:08:22. > :08:25.their fifth successive final. Husband and wife team John and Paul

:08:26. > :08:32.Drinkhall won gold in the mixed doubles table tennis final.

:08:33. > :08:37.Natalie Blake claimed England's first ever powerlifting medal after

:08:38. > :08:41.the 31-year-old lifted 95 kilos to take silver in the para-sports

:08:42. > :08:45.lightweight category. And Tom Daley recovered well, a poor

:08:46. > :08:50.diet to qualify in first phase for the 10m but four final. He will aim

:08:51. > :08:55.to defend his title in Edinburgh this evening.

:08:56. > :09:00.Here is what is happening all around the venues in Glasgow. This is on

:09:01. > :09:09.BBC Three right now my the badminton. All five badminton events

:09:10. > :09:13.will go to their bronze medal play-offs this evening, with the

:09:14. > :09:18.finals to follow tomorrow. On the red button, it is dementedly

:09:19. > :09:25.busy here. We are at this wash semifinal stages, -- squash

:09:26. > :09:31.semifinal stages. There are a lot of doubles and a lot of these on

:09:32. > :09:35.court. -- bodies. But we are just hearing

:09:36. > :09:44.news in the last few minutes of what could be a huge story. Botswana's

:09:45. > :09:48.former champion Amantle Montsho has failed a drugs test. She won the

:09:49. > :09:53.world title in 2011 before finishing second behind Christine Ohuruogu

:09:54. > :09:56.your class year. She has apparently tested positive for a banned

:09:57. > :10:04.stimulant after the 400m in Glasgow, where she was fourth behind the

:10:05. > :10:07.Jamaican trio. She will have her B sample tested on Monday. As soon as

:10:08. > :10:13.we get further news, we will bring it to you. It is a full programme of

:10:14. > :10:16.track and Field tonight at Hampden. There are nine finals, all the

:10:17. > :10:22.relays to become tested as well. That features you know who, Mr Usain

:10:23. > :10:26.Bolt. But it is also the 1500m, the Metric Mile, the blue riband event

:10:27. > :10:32.on track and the middle-distance races. This comes on the 60th

:10:33. > :10:35.anniversary of the so-called Miracle Mile in Vancouver 1954 between

:10:36. > :10:43.Australia's John Landy and a certain Sir Roger Bannister.

:10:44. > :10:50.Before May 1954, running a mile in under four minutes was perceived by

:10:51. > :10:55.many as an impenetrable barrier. Some people felt that there must be

:10:56. > :10:59.a limit somewhere. Perhaps it was not four minutes, but I was a

:11:00. > :11:03.medical student and I realised that was nonsense. Somewhere, somehow,

:11:04. > :11:09.someone could break the four-minute mile. On the 6th of May noted 54,

:11:10. > :11:19.Roger Bannister made his record-breaking attempt. Roger

:11:20. > :11:22.Bannister takes over. He races the last lung bursting furlong to the

:11:23. > :11:27.finishing post. This was it, the final effort that had kept him and

:11:28. > :11:32.many others from the four-minute mile. At his record only lasted 46

:11:33. > :11:38.days, when Australian John Landy beat his time in a race in Finland.

:11:39. > :11:47.John Landy, fastest mile runner in the world. I expected my record to

:11:48. > :11:50.be broken, but it was a bit swift. This set up the race together at the

:11:51. > :11:56.1954 Commonwealth Games in Vancouver as the Miracle Mile. But to Roger

:11:57. > :12:04.Bannister, it was much more than that. I knew it was the biggest race

:12:05. > :12:08.of my life. I realised also that my achieving the first four-minute mile

:12:09. > :12:18.would be relatively meaningless if John Landy then defeated me. So it

:12:19. > :12:27.really was between the two mile -- macro of us to see who was better. A

:12:28. > :12:34.battle for mastery on the track. New Zealand take the lead. John Mandy of

:12:35. > :12:38.Australia lies fourth. I believe they were looking at the two of us

:12:39. > :12:53.almost like prizefighters. What toothpaste does he use? What are his

:12:54. > :12:58.strengths and weaknesses? By then, John Landy had become the

:12:59. > :13:04.favourite, and I was most comfortable not being the favourite.

:13:05. > :13:09.But what I had to be certain of was that John Landy lead in the early

:13:10. > :13:16.part of the race. I felt I had a better finish if I could somehow

:13:17. > :13:26.hang on. Then I could beat him. It is already a two-man race. I ran as

:13:27. > :13:33.hard as I could to keep up with him. Landy ran his race just as Bannister

:13:34. > :13:38.had hoped. Over the last bend, he looked over his left shoulder,

:13:39. > :13:44.wondering whether he had dropped me. The crowd were making such noise

:13:45. > :13:47.that he could not hear my footsteps. And when he looked back from looking

:13:48. > :13:54.over his shoulder, not having seen me, I had actually then overtaken

:13:55. > :14:01.him. And that element of surprise was such that he could not then

:14:02. > :14:05.catch me. Roger Bannister wins by three yards in three minutes and 58

:14:06. > :14:22.seconds. And Vancouver salutes another English victory.

:14:23. > :14:35.We are going to talk about Australia versus England now. John Inverdale,

:14:36. > :14:39.by my count, we have 41 golds for Australia and 54 England. And it

:14:40. > :14:41.looks as though, for the first time in 28 years, England are on course

:14:42. > :14:49.to top the medal table in these games. Yeah, I ought to answer that

:14:50. > :15:25.question when these anthems have finished out of respect.

:15:26. > :15:31.Well, from one Aussie on top of the podium here, another who was

:15:32. > :15:35.watching that fantastic piece of footage about the Miracle Mile 60

:15:36. > :15:40.years ago involving John Landy and Roger Bannister. In Hatton is here

:15:41. > :15:43.from team Australia. You were saying how that is still a race that is

:15:44. > :15:48.spoken about in reverential tones in Australia? Is certainly is. One of

:15:49. > :15:55.the great names in Australian sport and in world sport. One of my

:15:56. > :16:00.colleagues said the other day, John is still going strong. And you said

:16:01. > :16:07.there was some monument to the race in Melbourne? Yes, another race,

:16:08. > :16:16.actually. That was where there was a fall. It was one of the great

:16:17. > :16:21.sportsmanships. Not just a great runner, but wonderful sportsmanship

:16:22. > :16:24.among the Australian team. And a quick word about the boxing. Great

:16:25. > :16:29.atmosphere, and you must be happy with the Aussie boxers? It was

:16:30. > :16:33.wonderful to see Shelley. She has only been fighting for four years,

:16:34. > :16:39.but a true blue Aussie. She is a law student. And she is mixing with the

:16:40. > :16:46.best of them. A wonderful start for us. Fingers crossed. What has been

:16:47. > :16:51.your impression of the games in Glasgow? It has been wonderful. We

:16:52. > :16:58.have a team of over 600 here. And they really spirited boxing team. We

:16:59. > :17:11.have some great athletes. We had the golden girls on the track. Just tell

:17:12. > :17:16.me if you have got a minute because there is a lot of talk about the

:17:17. > :17:20.future of the Commonwealth Games. It is in Brisbane in four years. And

:17:21. > :17:25.that interest is this event garnering in Australia and how big

:17:26. > :17:30.will it be on the Gold Coast? I have lived there since 1998 and it will

:17:31. > :17:38.be huge. It is a wonderful sporting city, the beaches are made thing...

:17:39. > :17:44.What about the sport? This sport is part of the feature of going there.

:17:45. > :17:48.It is a great sporting city and part of the lifestyle. People have

:17:49. > :17:57.supported these Games magnificently. Do you think the crowds will be the

:17:58. > :18:02.same? I am sure they will. We have a team that packs in 25,000 to the

:18:03. > :18:07.stadium to watch the football every week. So the Commonwealth Games will

:18:08. > :18:12.be huge in four years. Pleasure to talk to you. Thank you. An insight

:18:13. > :18:16.into how the Games might be progressing in four years that there

:18:17. > :18:20.is still a question hanging over what happens four years after that.

:18:21. > :18:25.Paddy Barnes has just been for his medal ceremony. He is going to make

:18:26. > :18:34.the jump, well, I assume, that he will move to the professional ranks

:18:35. > :18:41.have an won gold medals here. -- having won a gold medal here. Is

:18:42. > :18:46.that a big step? Most amateurs want to turn professional one day and

:18:47. > :18:50.start making money. He is in a great position now with his gold medal but

:18:51. > :18:54.if I was him I would tell him to give it another two years and have

:18:55. > :18:58.another chance at the Olympics. He is already a gold medallist, so

:18:59. > :19:04.making that more gold would be better for him. Why would you advise

:19:05. > :19:07.that? Isn't he running the risk of missing the boat? Would you say that

:19:08. > :19:13.if he has another gold medal he would be more marketable? Yes. Add a

:19:14. > :19:18.professional fighter has to be marketable, selling tickets.

:19:19. > :19:27.Anything can happen in those two years. The main thing is he will get

:19:28. > :19:31.more experience, develop as a fighter, and come out nice and

:19:32. > :19:35.strong. Back to the action now because we have had the medal

:19:36. > :19:39.ceremony for an Australian gold medal. Maybe there will be another

:19:40. > :19:48.one coming in a few moments. Back to the box.

:19:49. > :19:59.From Australia, Andrew Moloney! Andrew Moloney begins his ring walk.

:20:00. > :20:06.This is the man who brought to an end the fairy tale run of Reece

:20:07. > :20:15.McFadden. That was that semifinal stage. Three Australian finalists

:20:16. > :20:23.will compete here today. Very patient boxer. Uses terrific tactics

:20:24. > :20:28.to pull off his victories, including the one that silenced the crowd at

:20:29. > :20:31.the SECC. Kevin Smith and the Australian team clearly did their

:20:32. > :20:36.homework and that was crucial in eliminating Reece McFadden. He had a

:20:37. > :20:40.terrific run through to the semifinal stage. Excellent

:20:41. > :20:47.performance from Maloney in that contest. The previous opponents

:20:48. > :20:51.could not suss out Reece McFadden but he did and he was patient and

:20:52. > :21:06.got his tactics right. It was very close but he got there. These are

:21:07. > :21:08.the judges presiding over the tournament. Three will score it,

:21:09. > :21:29.chosen randomly. In the red corner, Waseem! And in

:21:30. > :21:51.the blue corner, representing Australia, Andrew Moloney! The

:21:52. > :21:54.referee is from Brazil. As the referee brings the two boxes

:21:55. > :22:04.together, there is very little in it in terms of height and reach. We are

:22:05. > :22:11.under way. The 52 kilo flyweight action. The boxer in blue is Andrew

:22:12. > :22:15.Moloney. Three Australian finalists here on this final day of

:22:16. > :22:19.competition in the boxing tournament. Muhammad Waseem wearing

:22:20. > :22:28.red and representing Pakistan, the sole representative in these gold

:22:29. > :22:32.medal bouts. Waseem has thrown a fast combinations, fast feet,

:22:33. > :22:36.getting him into position to close down the gap. He will throw up to

:22:37. > :22:42.six punch combinations. Very quick indeed. It was a patient's display

:22:43. > :22:48.from Maloney in the last contest but he might have to change his tactics

:22:49. > :23:01.and match the speed of his opponent in red. -- patient display. Waseem

:23:02. > :23:06.the reigning bronze medallist from Delhi. He has moved up in weight and

:23:07. > :23:10.gone one better in terms of medals at least. He would love to make it

:23:11. > :23:14.gold but he has a formidable opponent in front of him in the form

:23:15. > :23:21.of 23-year-old Maloney from Victoria. That right hand to the

:23:22. > :23:22.body was countered by Waseem but then Maloney ended the exchange with

:23:23. > :23:39.a long left. Exchange of hard right hands.

:23:40. > :23:46.Maloney is very patient and works well with his jab. He has caught

:23:47. > :23:51.Waseem with his right hand. Waseem has closed the gap down. The

:23:52. > :23:55.movement is a bit better from the Australian in this opening round.

:23:56. > :24:03.Waseem has closed the gap down. The movement is a bit better from the

:24:04. > :24:09.Australian in this opening round. Waseem have enjoyed buys in the

:24:10. > :24:23.opening rounds of the tournament. -- both boxers enjoyed buys.

:24:24. > :24:32.Patient and tactical win over Reece McFadden. Taking a while to get into

:24:33. > :24:38.his rhythm. Maloney will be catching the eye of the judges with his

:24:39. > :24:43.aggression and activity. Took a while to find his rhythm, Waseem,

:24:44. > :24:55.but he demonstrated that wonderfully in his victory over Abdul Omar of

:24:56. > :25:01.Ghana, who had got inside his reach. An untidy finish to the conclusion

:25:02. > :25:05.of this opening round. Maloney has boxed well. He has the scores for

:25:06. > :25:11.me. Good with the jab, good movement. He made his opponent work

:25:12. > :25:20.on the inside. I thought Maloney boxed better. He is the captain of

:25:21. > :25:24.the Pakistan boxing team. He has lead by example by making it through

:25:25. > :25:28.to the gold medal fight. Normally Waseem is better on the inside but

:25:29. > :25:37.Maloney was more active in that round. Yes, he has got all three of

:25:38. > :25:42.the scores. You can't blame them. In Pakistan corner they will be giving

:25:43. > :25:50.him a roasting. But Kevin Smith will be more than pleased. Heading up the

:25:51. > :25:58.Australian boxing programme and he worked with Nigeria in the 2012

:25:59. > :26:05.Games. Coaching qualities in demand all round the world in Olympic style

:26:06. > :26:10.boxing. Maloney in blue representing Australia took the opener. As we

:26:11. > :26:14.have seen time and again, taking the opening round is so crucial because

:26:15. > :26:24.it determines your tactics, especially in the second round. And

:26:25. > :26:33.often in the contest that follows. Expect to see Waseem making a more

:26:34. > :26:41.assertive and aggressive approach to this second round. Moloney is

:26:42. > :26:46.beating him to the shot. Waseem is too slow on his feet and needs to

:26:47. > :26:51.quicken up. He needs a tempo change. Moloney has been able to box at

:26:52. > :26:55.distance. Because Waseem is allowing him to do that, Moloney is gaining

:26:56. > :27:03.control of the contest. Straight right hand. Boxing mid to long range

:27:04. > :27:11.with no real problems. The man in red needs a change of tactics.

:27:12. > :27:17.Approaching the second half of the second round, but there has been no

:27:18. > :27:20.discernible change of tactics and tempo and intensity from Waseem.

:27:21. > :27:25.While he is remaining on the outside he is being picked off by the

:27:26. > :27:33.pecking punches of Moloney from Australia. The Australian has taken

:27:34. > :27:41.the opening half of this second round for my money. The left - right

:27:42. > :27:53.from Waseem and right hand over the top as successful as well. He is

:27:54. > :28:03.circling his opponent and Waseem has got to get on the front foot and

:28:04. > :28:09.sustain the pressure. In centre, Moloney is totally in control.

:28:10. > :28:12.Moloney competed in the 2010 Games but boxed at light flyweight,

:28:13. > :28:22.allowing his brother Jason to qualify at 52. Identical twins.

:28:23. > :28:27.Jason to the long straw, forcing Andrew into a weight class lower

:28:28. > :28:32.than he usually competes at. Jason hasn't qualified here. Andrew is

:28:33. > :28:36.that his more natural poundage of 52 kilograms and is all the way through

:28:37. > :28:49.to the gold medal bout, boxing wonderfully with single shots.

:28:50. > :28:53.Waseem still patiently stalking but hasn't troubled Moloney with any

:28:54. > :28:59.sustained assault. At this tempo, it most certainly seems to be

:29:00. > :29:04.Australia. There is the bell to end round number two. Waseem pumps his

:29:05. > :29:11.arm in celebration but I suspect when we see the scores, they will be

:29:12. > :29:15.in favour of the man in blue. He is boxing to instruction, boxing very

:29:16. > :29:26.well. Quite within himself. Handling the space. His movement is better. I

:29:27. > :29:37.think Waseem is feeling the pace over a hard ten days. This is his

:29:38. > :29:45.fourth contest. He thinks he has one -- won that but I disagree and so do

:29:46. > :29:49.all the judges. Waseem will have to win this final round in dominant

:29:50. > :29:54.fashion and ended inside the distance preferably if he hopes to

:29:55. > :29:58.occupy top spot. All calm in the blue corner, Andrew Moloney has

:29:59. > :30:04.taken the opening two rounds unanimously. The boxer wearing red,

:30:05. > :30:12.in the final round, Muhammad Waseem competing in his fourth contest in

:30:13. > :30:18.the Commonwealth Games. He got a buy in to the opening round and beat the

:30:19. > :30:23.man from Malaysia. He beat Abdul Omar from Ghana in the semifinal.

:30:24. > :30:32.Now he is on the Frankfurt, trying to increase the intensity against

:30:33. > :30:39.Moloney, -- front foot. But Andrew Moloney is still picking him off as

:30:40. > :30:45.he comes in. It is too slow from Waseem. He is failing here. Moloney

:30:46. > :30:50.is being allowed to work at mid and long range and Waseem has to get on

:30:51. > :30:53.the front foot and change tempo. The Australian is getting into his

:30:54. > :30:59.rhythm and has been allowed to plan the attack. He is watching and then

:31:00. > :31:02.he will pounce. He is boxing well within himself. He has controlled

:31:03. > :31:29.the pace. The Australian has controlled things very well.

:31:30. > :31:38.But to be able to go four or five times in the space of ten days. When

:31:39. > :31:43.you box with that with high intensity, it takes its toll. With

:31:44. > :31:49.Waseem, his feet are slow and the accuracy of his work is not good. My

:31:50. > :31:57.lowly, on the other hand, -- Maloney is controlling things very well. The

:31:58. > :32:06.two times national champion of Pakistan, Waseem, brings a round of

:32:07. > :32:20.applause from the crowd. We are inside the final minute. These are

:32:21. > :32:27.the tactics that Waseem should have adopted at the start, on that front

:32:28. > :32:35.foot, closing his man down. And there is a cut to the right eye of

:32:36. > :32:41.Waseem. That is significant. He appears to be in a bad place. He is

:32:42. > :32:48.distracted by it. The man from Pakistan needs a furious finish. He

:32:49. > :32:59.took a couple of body shots from Maloney. Maloney has won that. That

:33:00. > :33:14.is a good performance. Waseem celebrated instantly as well.

:33:15. > :33:29.But he needed to win the third and final round by big margins. I

:33:30. > :33:35.suspect it is too little, too late in an effort to turn the contest in

:33:36. > :33:50.his favour. Those are the tactics Waseem should have used at the

:33:51. > :33:53.start. At the moment when the final bell sounded, exuberance and

:33:54. > :33:57.abrasions from Waseem, but I suspect he is going to be disappointed if he

:33:58. > :34:00.believes he genuinely did enough to take that gold medal. We are

:34:01. > :34:08.awaiting the official announcement now. It appears that Australian

:34:09. > :34:13.Andrew Moloney were occupied the top spot on that rostrum. Here is the

:34:14. > :34:18.official announcement. Ladies and gentlemen, we have our judges' score

:34:19. > :34:24.totals. Winner, by unanimous decision, now gold medallist and

:34:25. > :34:38.Commonwealth men's flyweight champion, in the blue corner, from

:34:39. > :34:43.Australia, Andrew Moloney! Andrew Moloney acknowledges the crowd here

:34:44. > :34:53.at the SSE Hydro. He is the Commonwealth Games champion. With a

:34:54. > :35:02.display of tactically astute boxing. He takes a bow to all sides of the

:35:03. > :35:10.arena. He is the gold medallist at 52 kilograms. Absolute delight. This

:35:11. > :35:12.man executed his tactics to perfection. The man in the red

:35:13. > :35:17.corner, Muhammad Waseem, was disappointed. Pakistan's sole

:35:18. > :35:21.representative in the gold medal bouts comes away with a silver. I am

:35:22. > :35:26.sure he will look act on that in years to come with a great deal of

:35:27. > :35:32.pride, but for now, he is not happy. Andrew Moloney is the champion.

:35:33. > :35:37.Well, Michaela Walsh was disappointed with the judging

:35:38. > :35:42.earlier when she lost to Nicola Adams. But there is only one winner,

:35:43. > :35:48.and this is the gold medallist. Congratulations. How tough was that

:35:49. > :35:53.for you? More mentally tough than anything, because I wanted it so

:35:54. > :35:57.bad. I barely slept all week. It has been hard work for 12 years. I did

:35:58. > :36:01.not want to let the opportunity slip. When you seriously say you

:36:02. > :36:07.have not slept in a week come away you just tossing and turning all

:36:08. > :36:13.night? Definitely. Once I secured a medal, I slept a bit easier, but

:36:14. > :36:18.still not good. Is that nerves, and is it also parents and friends,

:36:19. > :36:22.feelings of responsibility to lots of people involved in you? It is

:36:23. > :36:27.more me putting pressure on myself. I knew I could win the gold medal if

:36:28. > :36:33.I boxed to the best of my ability. I did not want to let myself down, and

:36:34. > :36:39.everyone else. How do you rate your performance today? These whole

:36:40. > :36:43.Commonwealth Games, I have not had a chance to do my absolute best, but I

:36:44. > :36:48.have had to adapt to the other boxers and do what I had to do to

:36:49. > :36:56.get the win. What is next for you? I am not sure. A good night's sleep!

:36:57. > :36:59.May be in a couple of days! Go on holiday with my girlfriend. She

:37:00. > :37:04.deserves to have some time with just me and her. I have been boxing for

:37:05. > :37:10.the last four years. And then celebrate with family and friends.

:37:11. > :37:12.It is one of those moments where you realise why you did all those early

:37:13. > :37:17.mornings and endless training session? That is right. Sometimes

:37:18. > :37:24.you wonder why you put yourself through such gruelling training. But

:37:25. > :37:30.at moments like this, I would do it ten times over again. Two golds for

:37:31. > :37:35.the Aussies. Congratulations. Amir, over the last ten days of the whole

:37:36. > :37:39.of the Commonwealth Games, we have been talking about the haves and

:37:40. > :37:41.have-nots. That is the nature of this competition. Some have

:37:42. > :37:46.unbelievable government funding and facilities, but you were telling me

:37:47. > :37:50.about the facilities that the Pakistan boxers have, which I am

:37:51. > :37:53.sure will surprise a lot of people. Yeah, I was speaking to the Pakistan

:37:54. > :37:57.team yesterday and they were telling me they do not have any facilities

:37:58. > :38:00.to train in. They had a big field where they had to do all the running

:38:01. > :38:05.and boxing training. They had no boxing ring. I am doing a lot of

:38:06. > :38:10.work in Pakistan myself, so I said, I am going to try and help you guys.

:38:11. > :38:13.I will build a boxing academy for you. I built one in Bolton in

:38:14. > :38:19.England, and I will do the same in Pakistan. There is so much talent in

:38:20. > :38:23.Pakistan, but it is not being used. Aren't lots of boxing rings actually

:38:24. > :38:27.manufactured in Pakistan? Most of them are made in Pakistan and

:38:28. > :38:30.shipped everywhere else. The boxing gloves are made in Pakistan as well,

:38:31. > :38:35.but they don't have any equipment. So it is good that we will go there

:38:36. > :38:39.and help. Well, from a country that does not have a lot to a country

:38:40. > :38:44.that does have a lot of talent. Here is Paddy Barnes, about to receive

:38:45. > :38:48.another Commonwealth Games gold medal like the one he won in Delhi

:38:49. > :38:56.four years ago. He was on the rostrum in Beijing as well in 2008

:38:57. > :38:59.and again in London in 2012 after a rip-roaring three rounds against his

:39:00. > :39:05.Indian opponent today, he is a champion once again. I am guessing

:39:06. > :39:09.that Jim nearly will describe this medal ceremony. And you are proud,

:39:10. > :39:14.Jim, because you know what this means to Northern Ireland. Indeed,

:39:15. > :39:20.John. Not for the first time have the boxing team for Northern Ireland

:39:21. > :39:24.done the province proud. Things were not looking good this time

:39:25. > :39:30.yesterday, just a silver and a bronze. But the seven men and two

:39:31. > :39:33.women got themselves into the medals, and that has catapulted the

:39:34. > :39:46.Northern Ireland team up the medals table with considerable aplomb. Here

:39:47. > :39:54.is the president of the Commonwealth Games Association. Accompanied by

:39:55. > :40:04.the president of the Commonwealth Games Association of Malawi. The

:40:05. > :40:13.medals are presented by the president of the Lesotho

:40:14. > :40:19.Commonwealth Games Association. And there are the wonderful quaichs. I

:40:20. > :40:27.have friends that rebuke me when I do not drink out of one. This fella

:40:28. > :40:31.is just a teenager. If he sticks around, we will be seeing him in

:40:32. > :40:39.four years' time whenever he did captains from Glasgow to the Gold

:40:40. > :40:42.Coast in Australia. He had the misfortune of coming up against

:40:43. > :40:52.Paddy Barnes in the semifinal and was outboxed 3-0, but he is a real,

:40:53. > :41:07.raw talent and a serious aspect. -- prospect. And there is his quaich.

:41:08. > :41:10.Don't fill it up too much. The winner of the bronze medal.

:41:11. > :41:18.Representing Wales, Ashley Williams! Again, Ashley Williams

:41:19. > :41:29.Oxton very well, up to and including the semifinal -- he boxed very well.

:41:30. > :41:30.But he found the buzzsaw style of his Indian opponent a little too

:41:31. > :41:56.much. And now the silver medal. The winner

:41:57. > :42:05.of the Silver medal. Representing India, Devendro Laishram! They have

:42:06. > :42:11.had to patch up a little cut, courtesy of Paddy Barnes. He was the

:42:12. > :42:15.number three ranked boxer in this division coming into this

:42:16. > :42:20.tournament, and you could have not got a better final. The top two men

:42:21. > :42:27.met to decide gold and silver. He got the silver. He was hoping to

:42:28. > :42:32.become only the second Indian to ever win a gold medal in this

:42:33. > :42:36.division. But again, he is just a youngster. And now, for the first

:42:37. > :42:49.time in four years, youngster. And now, for the first

:42:50. > :42:53.Northern Ireland, Paddy Barnes! Come on, Paddy, give us a bit of a

:42:54. > :43:00.smile! The Northern Ireland team captain, very much set the standard,

:43:01. > :43:02.lead by example. Only the fourth boxer in the history of the

:43:03. > :43:09.Commonwealth Games boxing tournament to win back-to-back gold medals. At

:43:10. > :43:14.27, does he stay amateur? Will the funding continue? Of course it will.

:43:15. > :43:18.Will he goes to Rio and have a crack at being the first Irish boxer to

:43:19. > :43:27.win medals at three successive Olympic Games? The quaich will be

:43:28. > :43:32.stuck in the pocket somewhere. For the first time in four years in the

:43:33. > :43:33.Commonwealth Games we will hear Northern Ireland's anthem, courtesy

:43:34. > :45:03.of Paddy Barnes. system in 1990 and a member of the

:45:04. > :45:09.public had to sing Danny Boy. In 1994 they had similar problems. The

:45:10. > :45:18.Northern Irish team doctor was an opera singer for fun and he stood up

:45:19. > :45:22.and did it but no problems here at the Glasgow 2014 boxing tournament.

:45:23. > :45:24.The highly efficient Paddy Barnes gets to listen to his

:45:25. > :45:27.The highly efficient Paddy Barnes gets to listen to country's national

:45:28. > :45:34.anthem and make history. Double gold in the Commonwealth for the Belfast

:45:35. > :45:45.boy, Paddy Barnes. But you were on stand-by in case the pH didn't work,

:45:46. > :45:48.were you? They couldn't afford me! There will be more moments for

:45:49. > :45:53.Northern Ireland in the ring because Michael Conlan is about to compete

:45:54. > :46:01.for plays Ash back. An interesting fight on two levels, Northern

:46:02. > :46:07.Ireland against England. -- Michael Conlan is about to compete against

:46:08. > :46:12.Qais Ashfaq. But also you are very interested in this. Yes, he is a

:46:13. > :46:16.good friend of mine and I just met him before the fight in the changing

:46:17. > :46:27.rooms, and he was calm and confident. I think they have sparred

:46:28. > :46:31.before but never fought. Qais is very confident. He is a favourite to

:46:32. > :46:36.win the gold medal and I think he can do it. He looked good in the

:46:37. > :46:42.semifinals and he has got my money. We will see when Michael Conlan

:46:43. > :46:46.walks out what work has been done on his face following that clash of

:46:47. > :46:50.heads but there was a gaping hole above his eye. They will have done a

:46:51. > :46:56.lot of work on it over 24 hours but it is not much time between one

:46:57. > :47:01.fight and another. How vulnerable is here? To open up again? Very

:47:02. > :47:08.vulnerable. It could open up at any time in the fight. He needs to keep

:47:09. > :47:13.his defence higher, move his head more, make sure he does not get hit

:47:14. > :47:19.on that part. But if you are Qais, you know that is a vulnerability.

:47:20. > :47:27.Are you jabbing? Are you trying to get your head in as well? No, no. If

:47:28. > :47:30.I was Qais I think I would be throwing punches. He could be

:47:31. > :47:41.disqualified if he went in with his head. I saw the cut when I had a

:47:42. > :47:49.chat with him and it has healed well. The backroom team did a good

:47:50. > :47:55.job helping it to meal. He has two butterfly stitches but I am sure it

:47:56. > :47:59.will be fine. You are valuable as a boxer and few other guy in the ring

:48:00. > :48:05.and the people in your corner are very important because it is a team

:48:06. > :48:12.effort. It is a big team effort and you need them. I don't think that

:48:13. > :48:17.Northern Irish kid needs that pressure, knowing he has got a cut.

:48:18. > :48:27.For Qais it will be about confidence. He knows he could open

:48:28. > :48:31.up the cut and win by stoppage. You have to say that the staging of this

:48:32. > :48:38.boxing competition, not just here but at the SECC as well, has been

:48:39. > :48:44.brilliant. Everything has been running like clockwork and the music

:48:45. > :48:48.has hyped up the atmosphere as well. Michael, and opens to Jimi Hendrix.

:48:49. > :49:01.This is Northern Ireland against England. So we are guaranteed a home

:49:02. > :49:09.nations win but who? Jim? Michael Conlan has made his way to the red

:49:10. > :49:16.corner. 21-year-old from Leeds is Qais Ashfaq and he will be in the

:49:17. > :49:21.blue corner. The sixth English man to win gold in this division in the

:49:22. > :49:30.Commonwealth Games possibly. In 74, then Shaun Murphy in 86, then a

:49:31. > :49:48.fairer old gap. The favourite in this division for Michael Conlan to

:49:49. > :49:52.defend there! Contend with. Ashfaq has nothing to fear really. Giving

:49:53. > :50:07.away a certain amount of height and reach to the Northern Irish man.

:50:08. > :50:15.Michael Conlan's great buddy and roommate here Paddy Barnes has set

:50:16. > :50:21.the standard. Conlan will be desperate to follow that example.

:50:22. > :50:33.Representing Northern Ireland, Michael, -- Michael Conlan! And

:50:34. > :50:46.across the ring in the blue corner, representing England, Qais Ashfaq!

:50:47. > :51:10.What a great buzz around this magnificently appointed arena.

:51:11. > :51:15.By far the more experienced man in this particular final is the man in

:51:16. > :51:21.red, Conlan, representing Northern Ireland. He won the silver medal in

:51:22. > :51:25.the European Championships and a bronze medal at the Olympic Games

:51:26. > :51:28.and he has boxed in two World Championships, reaching the

:51:29. > :51:32.quarterfinals. But there has been something about Ashfaq all the way

:51:33. > :51:36.through that makes him by far Conlan's most dangerous opponent.

:51:37. > :51:41.Terrific performance in the quarterfinals against Scotland. And

:51:42. > :51:50.he completely outboxed the veteran from Kenya in the semifinal. But

:51:51. > :51:59.that very nasty cut following the clash of heads with Sean McGoldrick.

:52:00. > :52:04.The contest was stopped but Conlan won despite the cut. The Northern

:52:05. > :52:09.Ireland boxing team have brought in an expert coach and expert touch man

:52:10. > :52:15.for just these reasons. How important that will be we will find

:52:16. > :52:22.out. Interesting to see how Conlan boxes in this contest and what

:52:23. > :52:27.tactics he chooses. Long-range, not getting involved or the front foot

:52:28. > :52:36.and testing the chain of his opponent? We know he is a good

:52:37. > :52:42.all-rounder. When he is boxing as an orthodox boxer against Ashfaq, that

:52:43. > :52:44.is when the heads can clash and he has got to protect his cut. It will

:52:45. > :52:58.be difficult for him. I am trying to see if there are

:52:59. > :53:03.traces of blood on the forehead of Conlan, who is boxing very nicely.

:53:04. > :53:08.They don't want to get caught on the ropes because Conlan's punches are

:53:09. > :53:13.quick and accurate. The referee says, don't hold on. Back they come

:53:14. > :53:23.again. A good opening round. Not much between them. Ashfaq's defence

:53:24. > :53:36.looks pretty good. Ashfaq has the speed. Fast hands, good food, good

:53:37. > :53:40.movement. Conlan is boxing better choosing Southport tactics.

:53:41. > :53:50.Experimenting with stances. Good movement and speed from Ashfaq. Good

:53:51. > :54:00.footwork by Ashfaq and anything he might have just star in this round.

:54:01. > :54:10.Not much in it. -- he might have just nicked this round. In the last

:54:11. > :54:16.couple of seconds, not a bad round. Is there blood coming down Conlan's

:54:17. > :54:21.face? Difficult to see. The heads have clashed a couple of times. I

:54:22. > :54:28.filled Ashfaq won that. They are giving instructions. A little clash

:54:29. > :54:34.of heads but followed by a good left hand. You are going to get that.

:54:35. > :54:37.Unorthodox, always going to be a clash of heads. Conlan experimenting

:54:38. > :54:48.in that round but it has not really work. It is a close round but Ashfaq

:54:49. > :54:56.has just nicked it. What will Conlan do? He will have to come forward.

:54:57. > :55:02.That cut is nasty. It is starting to lose and really horrible. If it is

:55:03. > :55:05.opened up by a punch than a contest will be stopped. If it is opened up

:55:06. > :55:11.by a deliberate clash of heads, that could be different and it will go to

:55:12. > :55:13.the judges. Not that Ashfaq would like to win it like that, but one

:55:14. > :55:24.good punch... Conlan the tallest of the two, rated

:55:25. > :55:33.number two in the world in this division. This is a close contest.

:55:34. > :55:38.Conlan has the height and reach but he is conceding that. That suits

:55:39. > :55:45.Ashfaq. He likes his opponents to come onto him. Conlan has made the

:55:46. > :55:48.decision to go forward but that might suit Ashfaq. He is trying to

:55:49. > :55:54.get up close to him and then working his body. A bit naughty of Conlan

:55:55. > :56:04.pushing his open glass into the face of his opponent. Sticking to his

:56:05. > :56:10.stance at the moment. It is a messy contest from Michael Conlan who is

:56:11. > :56:20.not normally like this. That cut must be playing on his mind. I think

:56:21. > :56:24.so and he is getting frustrated. He is doing the work downstairs and

:56:25. > :56:34.closing the gap. Better work by Conlan inside.

:56:35. > :56:40.Paddy Barnes said he would get some stick if he did not come back with

:56:41. > :56:45.the gold and at the moment Ashfaq is still stealing bits. The second bout

:56:46. > :56:49.of the second round and Ashfaq looking composed. Conlan is just

:56:50. > :56:54.grappling at the moment. Not much clean work coming from the world

:56:55. > :57:07.rated number two of this division. Second Commonwealth Games for

:57:08. > :57:11.Conlan. Conlan is doing it again. He needs to watch himself because the

:57:12. > :57:15.last thing he can afford is to get a warning against him. That is showing

:57:16. > :57:19.the frustration we can see from Conlan. He knows he has got to get

:57:20. > :57:26.to his man and he is finding it difficult. Both of them have got to

:57:27. > :57:30.steady themselves and get more accuracy on their work. Very

:57:31. > :57:39.scrappy. Difficult to score. Very close. Conlan has not boxed as well

:57:40. > :57:44.as he has done all the way through and Ashfaq is frustrated. He is the

:57:45. > :57:47.favourite in this division and if he wins this, Conlan will have to find

:57:48. > :57:54.something that we have not seen so far to take the gold. Great stuff by

:57:55. > :58:01.Ashfaq, right and left, and Conlan not coming back with much. Again on

:58:02. > :58:09.the inside better work by Conlan. Little jabbing right hand. It is the

:58:10. > :58:13.first time he has hurt Ashfaq. The end of the round and Conlan things

:58:14. > :58:27.he has taken it. It will be ever so close. Ashfaq was boxing well on the

:58:28. > :58:33.back foot. You have got to push your opponent back. Conlan taking a lot

:58:34. > :58:41.of risks. It was scrappy. A bit naughty then and he got away with

:58:42. > :58:49.it. Conlan on the Frankfurt and punching in threes and fours. -- on

:58:50. > :58:54.the front foot. Ashfaq has got to do more and boxed better on the inside

:58:55. > :59:03.with more combinations. They have all gone for Conlan in the scoring

:59:04. > :59:16.but it was close. One judge has Conlan leading. The biggest three

:59:17. > :59:21.minutes of their boxing careers. Ashfaq came through in considerable

:59:22. > :59:39.style, beating man from the Soto, Joe Ham from Scotland and from Kenya

:59:40. > :59:43.as well. -- Lesoto. Better work by Conlan. You watch your head and you

:59:44. > :59:51.watch your head. Hard to see the state of his right eye and that cut

:59:52. > :59:55.was nasty. Ashfaq showing signs of wariness. Conlan is an experienced

:59:56. > :00:02.man and showing why he was the Olympic bronze medallist

:00:03. > :00:10.representing Ireland in the 52 kilograms division. Now it is 56 of

:00:11. > :00:18.course. Both those right hand landed at both looked good. This is

:00:19. > :00:28.slipping away from Ashfaq. He is just waiting a little too long.

:00:29. > :00:40.Ashfaq has to push him back a bit if he is to score here. And he has to

:00:41. > :00:49.score. Again, referee says to the pair of them, watch the old noggin.

:00:50. > :00:56.What a quarter this has been. In the second round, all three judges'

:00:57. > :01:03.cards went to the man from Northern Ireland, Michael Conlan. Ashfaq just

:01:04. > :01:39.went into his shell a bit there. Good footwork by Ashfaq on the turn.

:01:40. > :01:59.Michael Conlan is forcing the pace a bit more. Showing the judges he is

:02:00. > :02:03.prepared to go forward. Conlan has got him where he got him at the end

:02:04. > :02:10.of the first round, and he is doing exactly the same. What a finish to

:02:11. > :02:15.this round. And the man in red has done it. Conlan puts out a hand, but

:02:16. > :02:23.there was not a lot of convincing there. Conlan's dad gives him a hug.

:02:24. > :02:28.What a finish to that round. What a finish to the contest. Conlan had to

:02:29. > :02:33.dig deep, and I think he has done enough. Close round until the last

:02:34. > :02:39.30 seconds. But this fella in red then just pounced on his opponent,

:02:40. > :02:47.got him on the ropes. And just finished much longer. He is boxing

:02:48. > :02:58.as a southpaw here are not normally his stance, but he did it very well.

:02:59. > :03:01.Those last 20 seconds were crucial. I have a feeling that nonstop

:03:02. > :03:08.southpaw action by Conlan was to protect the eye. Well, we can all

:03:09. > :03:14.draw breath. We have a unanimous decision in favour of the winner,

:03:15. > :03:18.now gold mode list and Commonwealth men's bantamweight champion, in the

:03:19. > :03:29.red, representing Northern Ireland, Michael Conlan! Olympic bronze,

:03:30. > :03:39.European silver and now Commonwealth gold. He had a very good opponent,

:03:40. > :03:47.Thai /frack, only one year his junior. Ashfaq in his first major

:03:48. > :03:53.tournament. What an opening first round he had. But Conlan, bruised

:03:54. > :03:57.and battered and under a lot of pressure, and back in the

:03:58. > :04:05.magnificent style. He is the champion.

:04:06. > :04:09.We have been very lucky this afternoon, because I think four out

:04:10. > :04:14.of the five fights we have seen so far have been tremendous. That was

:04:15. > :04:22.probably the best so far. A mere, it could have gone either way? It could

:04:23. > :04:32.have gone either way. Even when that cut reopened, he kept coming

:04:33. > :04:36.forward. Qais did what he had to do. It was a very close fight. I am sure

:04:37. > :04:42.Qais welcome to the Commonwealths again. But overall, what a great

:04:43. > :04:46.performance by both fighters. Talking about the judging system, as

:04:47. > :04:50.we have said frequently over the last week, they have gone back on

:04:51. > :04:54.the computer system to having old-fashioned men sitting at desks,

:04:55. > :04:59.writing notes on deciding who has won. We will talk about the merits

:05:00. > :05:09.of that in a second. Here are the boys. Those are the roommates.

:05:10. > :05:13.Michael, congratulations. He said he would not allow you back in the ring

:05:14. > :05:18.tonight. I was sitting there going please, God, don't let this man slay

:05:19. > :05:25.me when I get home! That was a hard fight. Qais Ashfaq, from the start,

:05:26. > :05:33.I have been watching him. Very skilled boxer. He is one for the

:05:34. > :05:38.future. He is young. I am only a wee bit older. But what a talent he is.

:05:39. > :05:45.He took the first round and made me drive on myself. How did you feel

:05:46. > :05:53.when your cut reopened in the first round? Well, you know yourself, I

:05:54. > :05:57.did not even know the cut was open. I was like, what are you going on

:05:58. > :06:05.about? Would you say this was your best performance in the, most games?

:06:06. > :06:12.-- in the Commonwealth Games? I almost lost the first round before,

:06:13. > :06:20.but today I knew I had it in me to drive on. It was one of the toughest

:06:21. > :06:23.contests. Qais is coming in now. How much do you owe your gold medal to

:06:24. > :06:32.your team, who have patched up and make sure you could compete? The

:06:33. > :06:37.lads on the team were having a last push to get me to this stage of the

:06:38. > :06:41.competition. And it is great to see my father on one of the biggest

:06:42. > :06:48.stages in the world, the Commonwealth Games. He must be

:06:49. > :06:55.unbelievably proud. Congratulations. Qais, come in. You have to be proud

:06:56. > :07:05.of the performance. It could have gone either way. Yeah, I think I

:07:06. > :07:11.proved myself well. I have only just turned 21. Like you say, here's an

:07:12. > :07:19.Olympic bronze medallist, European silver medallist. You are still

:07:20. > :07:23.young, and you have got many more Commonwealths and Olympics to come.

:07:24. > :07:31.What is next for you? Next, world and Europeans next year. I am still

:07:32. > :07:36.learning, still young. It must have been a great experience for you. It

:07:37. > :07:44.was an amazing experience. I've obviously want a gold medal, but I

:07:45. > :07:51.have boxed Olympians. I know I am at the top level. But it was not my day

:07:52. > :07:54.today. And they were saying his or you in the dressing room couple of

:07:55. > :07:58.hours ago and said you were really calm. What that a front, or were you

:07:59. > :08:02.at ease? No, I was calm. The pressure does not bother me too

:08:03. > :08:09.much. I thrive under pressure, but it was not my day today. It was a

:08:10. > :08:14.good fight. I will be back. I know I can beat these kids on my day. For

:08:15. > :08:18.you on the podium later. We have got a medal ceremony taking place in the

:08:19. > :08:23.ring. Another Australian gold medal. It has been an Australian and

:08:24. > :08:31.Northern Ireland they so far. Let's go back to that, and then we will

:08:32. > :08:39.have a chat with Amir Khan about what he thinks about the changes to

:08:40. > :08:42.scoring. The boxes are just taking their positions ahead of this medal

:08:43. > :08:49.ceremony for the 52 kilograms flyweight division. What a moment it

:08:50. > :09:03.is in the careers of these young boxers. Representing Scotland, Reese

:09:04. > :09:08.McFadden! And just listen to the ovation that the 19-year-old

:09:09. > :09:16.carpenter from Motherwell receives ahead of receiving his bronze medal.

:09:17. > :09:21.Reese McFadden produced a brilliant run through to the final four. I

:09:22. > :09:26.would call it a fairy tale round, but it was born of his hard work and

:09:27. > :09:31.immense talent. He beat the world number one, Andrew Selby, in his

:09:32. > :09:35.opening bout. He beat the reigning champion in his second bout. Then he

:09:36. > :09:46.deposed the reigning bronze medallist from Delhi four years

:09:47. > :09:58.ago. Then he was out done in the semifinal. Abdul Omar! Another

:09:59. > :10:06.immensely talented youngster, Abdul Omar from Ghana, just 20 years of

:10:07. > :10:16.age. He is also a real talent, in stark contrast to McFadden. A tall,

:10:17. > :10:32.rangy boxer. And he is not averse to mixing it up on the inside. Terrific

:10:33. > :10:39.tournament for him. The winner of the Silver, representing Pakistan,

:10:40. > :10:45.Muhammad Waseem! The captain of the Pakistan boxing team. He was a

:10:46. > :10:54.bronze medallist in Delhi four years ago. Here, he has gone one better

:10:55. > :10:57.and made it through to the final. But his boxing this afternoon

:10:58. > :11:00.and made it through to the final. perhaps the void of the zip and zest

:11:01. > :11:05.and energy we have seen in his previous bouts in the tournament.

:11:06. > :11:12.Nonetheless, a brilliant display, especially considering the adversity

:11:13. > :11:17.the Pakistan team have had to overcome that Amir was describing,

:11:18. > :11:25.with their lack of facilities. Representing Australia, Andrew

:11:26. > :11:30.Moloney! Andrew Moloney raises his arms in triumph. He occupies top

:11:31. > :11:38.spot on the medal rostrum here at the Hydro Arena. Performance is full

:11:39. > :11:46.of astute, tactical boxing, plenty of patience. He plants a kiss on

:11:47. > :11:52.that Commonwealth Games gold. Second of the afternoon for Australia.

:11:53. > :11:59.Perfect record of two golds in two finals, with one to come. We will

:12:00. > :12:24.now hear the Australian national anthem, played in his honour.

:12:25. > :13:14.Andrew Moloney, the 23-year-old from Victoria. He only took up boxing to

:13:15. > :13:21.prove his fitness for Aussie rules football. Now, with his fellow

:13:22. > :13:29.boxers, he stands on the top spot of the medal rostrum here at the Hydro

:13:30. > :13:34.Arena. He takes Australia's 15th old medal in boxing in Commonwealth

:13:35. > :13:38.Games history. That was an emphatic performance by Andrew Moloney. I

:13:39. > :13:42.think most of us, if we had been judging that, would have given the

:13:43. > :13:46.gold medal to him. But it is an interesting discussion, Amir,

:13:47. > :13:51.especially for events like this, where most people watching will only

:13:52. > :13:54.watch amateur boxing in the Olympic Games and major championships. They

:13:55. > :13:57.don't watch on a week in, week out basis. In days gone by, there was a

:13:58. > :14:04.computer system that marked the scoring. There were clearly defined

:14:05. > :14:12.areas to be hit and a computer registering it or not. Now we have

:14:13. > :14:16.gone back to almost a reassuringly old-fashioned way, other bloke

:14:17. > :14:21.sitting at a desk going, yes, he hit him. Is that better? It is hard to

:14:22. > :14:26.say. When the computer scoring was around, people said we should go

:14:27. > :14:30.back to the old school. Now it is back to the old school, people say

:14:31. > :14:36.we should go to computer scoring. With the fight we just saw, it was

:14:37. > :14:41.so tight. You know a bit about boxing, and you said to me, I don't

:14:42. > :14:48.know who has won this. So it becomes terribly subjective. And you don't

:14:49. > :14:53.one that. -- you don't want that. They are looking at how many punches

:14:54. > :14:56.thrown, the quality of the punching, the movement and everything. You

:14:57. > :15:01.don't know what the judge might be watching. He is sat ringside. He

:15:02. > :15:08.might be looking at aggressiveness. If you are not aggressive, you could

:15:09. > :15:17.be out. There were a few fighters who did not win I thought might have

:15:18. > :15:23.won under a computer scoring system. Is this to the disadvantage of the

:15:24. > :15:26.counterpunching? It is ethnically a disadvantage for a counterpuncher.

:15:27. > :15:31.In amateur boxing, the Cubans are the best. I don't think there will

:15:32. > :15:34.be many Cubans winning gold medals at the next Olympics, because they

:15:35. > :15:39.are always on their back foot and they are counter fighters. The

:15:40. > :15:44.people who win the fights are forward fighters. It is an

:15:45. > :15:48.interesting debate. The other thing is relevant to the last fight we

:15:49. > :15:52.have seen about the headgear. He bore watching for the first time on

:15:53. > :15:55.a Saturday afternoon -- people will be watching for the first time on a

:15:56. > :15:59.Saturday afternoon and seem that there was no headgear this

:16:00. > :16:02.afternoon. It was a major factor in whether Michael Conlan was going to

:16:03. > :16:06.fight. The governing body have said they are going to re-examine whether

:16:07. > :16:20.putting head guard back on amateur boxers works. Conlan just about made

:16:21. > :16:24.it. I think they will re-examine their decision but if you look at

:16:25. > :16:41.the Commonwealth Games, 15 mailboxes were cut and had to be fixed. -- 15

:16:42. > :16:51.men were cut. Pump up the volume, here comes the first Scottish

:16:52. > :16:55.finalist of the day. Charlie Flynn. And this is Scotland against

:16:56. > :17:02.Northern Ireland. Joe Fitzpatrick. The home nations are guaranteed a

:17:03. > :17:06.medal here, but the overwhelming majority of the 16,000 people packed

:17:07. > :17:12.into the Hydro want this to be the first gold medal that Scotland of

:17:13. > :17:15.the boxing at the Commonwealth Games. And we have Josh Taylor

:17:16. > :17:27.coming up in the final fight of the afternoon against Junias Jonas, the

:17:28. > :17:33.Namibian, the best fight of the day. But this is a great opportunity for

:17:34. > :17:37.the young Scottish man. These welcome to the ring from Northern

:17:38. > :17:47.Ireland Joe Fitzpatrick. -- please welcome. Fitzpatrick from Northern

:17:48. > :17:57.Ireland begins his ring walk. The 60 kilograms lightweight division. He

:17:58. > :18:01.also wears a determined face as he steps into the spotlight of this

:18:02. > :18:10.arena. It proves to be a magnificent amphitheatre for the men at this

:18:11. > :18:15.contest. He boxed really impressively to arrive at this

:18:16. > :18:20.final, the 19-year-old. His opponent is only slightly older at 20. Two

:18:21. > :18:31.prodigiously precocious as talented men have made it through to this

:18:32. > :18:49.gold medal bout in the gold medal clash of the lightweight division.

:18:50. > :19:12.Ladies and gentlemen, time to introduce our boxers. Representing

:19:13. > :19:16.Scotland, Charlie Flynn! And across the ring in the blue corner,

:19:17. > :19:32.representing Northern Ireland, Joe Fitzpatrick! Referees from

:19:33. > :19:44.Kazakhstan. Three bouts of three minutes. They come together and

:19:45. > :19:50.received their final instructions. You can see the height advantage

:19:51. > :20:01.that Fitzpatrick enjoys over Flynn. The contest begins. The boxer

:20:02. > :20:05.wearing blue with the southpaw is from Northern Ireland. You might

:20:06. > :20:09.have noticed that huge clump of petroleum jelly of scoring the mark

:20:10. > :20:15.beneath the left eye of Fitzpatrick. It was picked up in the semifinal.

:20:16. > :20:24.Flynn is representing Scotland in red and he has an eye injury as

:20:25. > :20:29.well. How will the two boxers approach this? Will they take it to

:20:30. > :20:34.their opponent aggressively? I don't think I have ever seen a boxer

:20:35. > :20:40.coming onto the ring with so much grease on his wound. That should

:20:41. > :20:49.dictate his tactics. Southpaw and Orthodox. No question that

:20:50. > :20:53.Fitzpatrick as to keep his distance and protect that wound. Conlan did

:20:54. > :20:57.very well and took some risks going forward and found a way to win but

:20:58. > :21:03.it is a risk when you are going forward and your heads are going to

:21:04. > :21:09.clash, then anything can happen. Flynn is the more compact boxer,

:21:10. > :21:13.five feet seven. He is a bustling come forward boxer as well,

:21:14. > :21:17.effective at getting inside the height and reach of taller

:21:18. > :21:22.opponents. Ranked 23rd in the world, the highest remaining ranked boxer

:21:23. > :21:31.and accommodation. Because at semifinal stage, the man in blue,

:21:32. > :21:37.Fitzpatrick, eliminated Michael Alexander from Trinidad and Tobago,

:21:38. > :21:46.world number 15. Good tactics from Flynn, closing down the gap to the

:21:47. > :21:51.taller southpaw. He has got to punches opponents coming forward but

:21:52. > :22:01.you have to give credit to Flynn. Closing the gap down. In his

:22:02. > :22:05.semifinal he was against the Welsh man Joe Cordina. He conceded the

:22:06. > :22:24.opening round but came on strong in two and three.

:22:25. > :22:34.Every forward forays from the Scot is bringing increases in decibel

:22:35. > :22:38.activity from a crowd. He throws his right hand and tips to the left with

:22:39. > :22:50.his head, so he can come back with the left. Good little move. Good

:22:51. > :22:55.tactics. Good round for the Scot, I thought. Bright start. He

:22:56. > :23:01.acknowledges the crowd because he thinks so, too. Mike removes the

:23:02. > :23:10.mouthpiece and gets to work on the instructions. That highs holding up.

:23:11. > :23:18.Surely Flynn has taken the opening round. -- his eye is holding up. Bit

:23:19. > :23:21.scrappy here and there but he has caught Fitzpatrick with a lovely

:23:22. > :23:26.left hook and finished the round very strong. I suspect the judges

:23:27. > :23:39.have all gone for him in the opening round. Yes, clean sweep of the

:23:40. > :23:40.judges in that opening round for Charlie Flynn. Careful attention

:23:41. > :24:01.being paid to that eye injury. We move into the second round in the

:24:02. > :24:06.60 kilograms lightweight final. Joseph Fitzpatrick, the reigning

:24:07. > :24:14.Northern Ireland should opening champion. Flynn has been pushed back

:24:15. > :24:22.so change in approach from Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick meeting

:24:23. > :24:27.fire with fire. Good start to the round but scrappy. Often southpaw

:24:28. > :24:36.coming forward is easier to hit right hand. He knows he is behind,

:24:37. > :24:37.so a definite change in tactics. Fitzpatrick really taking it to

:24:38. > :24:47.Flynn. And in taking it to the man from

:24:48. > :24:55.Scotland, an increasing amount of exchanges from close quarters. The

:24:56. > :25:03.referee has intervened with a command to break. Lovely right hand

:25:04. > :25:04.from Flynn. Switching the attack and finding better, more accurate work,

:25:05. > :25:19.Flynn. Flynn continuing to bob and weave

:25:20. > :25:25.and getting back inside. Nice left hand from Fitzpatrick parried

:25:26. > :25:29.effectively with his forearm. This contest is not suiting Fitzpatrick

:25:30. > :25:34.for me. He is getting in accurate, tired and scrappy on the inside. The

:25:35. > :25:42.young Scot is really willing to work on the inside. It has suited him, no

:25:43. > :25:48.question, the close quarters stuff. Fitzpatrick had a terrific year in

:25:49. > :25:53.2011, experiencing the Commonwealth youth games, taking the bronze medal

:25:54. > :26:00.at the Isle of Man, and then a third-place finish at the European

:26:01. > :26:05.youth championship in Dublin. He is still only 19 and he finds himself

:26:06. > :26:08.contesting Commonwealth Games gold. He is facing a determined little

:26:09. > :26:20.boxer who has been inspired and encouraged by the home crowd. On the

:26:21. > :26:28.front foot once more. Uppercut on the inside while Fitzpatrick is

:26:29. > :26:35.holding on. Both boxers exchanging body shots. He is throwing the left

:26:36. > :26:39.hand from too far out. He has got to judge first, Break down the

:26:40. > :26:44.distance, then throw his left hand. He is falling short, his feet come

:26:45. > :26:52.square, and that allows Flynn to work on the inside. Good round again

:26:53. > :26:57.for Charlie Flynn. Charlie Flynn fighting furiously at close range.

:26:58. > :27:03.That is the end of round number two and again, the same as at the end of

:27:04. > :27:11.the first round. He took the first round in unanimous fashion. As the

:27:12. > :27:16.round progressed, Flynn was having more success and picking his punches

:27:17. > :27:21.more accurately. Lovely right hand there, bit of quality to find the

:27:22. > :27:25.space and gap. Lovely right hand again on the outside. Fitzpatrick

:27:26. > :27:29.coming forward but his feet square on his hands down. Looking at the

:27:30. > :27:33.scores, every judge has gone for Charlie Flynn. Very good performance

:27:34. > :27:59.from Flynn in that round. So into the final round we go.

:28:00. > :28:06.Charlie Flynn has taken both of the opening rounds for all of the

:28:07. > :28:19.scoring judges. Fitzpatrick from Ulster really has it all to do.

:28:20. > :28:27.He hasn't found an answer to the clever little movements and punch

:28:28. > :28:31.picking at Flynn has demonstrated. At the start of this round, Flynn

:28:32. > :28:39.moving to his left, moving away from the southpaw, clever. He circled and

:28:40. > :28:50.moves to his left. Panting with the right hand, -- punching. Clever

:28:51. > :28:55.tactics. The fourth contest for both of these men during the lightweight

:28:56. > :29:01.tournament. They had a bye in the opening round and have produced

:29:02. > :29:10.really eye-catching performances. That catch to the head produced a

:29:11. > :29:15.huge response from the crowd. I think Fitzpatrick has just got to go

:29:16. > :29:23.for it now. Two down, all or nothing. Got to try and find the

:29:24. > :29:31.power shots. We are at the midpoint of this final round. It is still

:29:32. > :29:38.Flynn on the front foot and taking the contest to Fitzpatrick. We are

:29:39. > :29:51.seeing exchanges when the boxers within punching range. An effective

:29:52. > :29:53.shot against a shorter boxer intent on coming forward. If he is moving

:29:54. > :29:57.to the left, shot against a shorter boxer intent

:29:58. > :30:01.on coming forward. If he he is going to miss. That is what is happening

:30:02. > :30:06.here. The movement is crucial and young Flynn keeps moving to the

:30:07. > :30:12.left, away from the danger shot. Finishing on the left hook. That

:30:13. > :30:16.movement to the side. Fitzpatrick needs to adjust his feet and come

:30:17. > :30:37.onto a right hook. He has not found that shot yet.

:30:38. > :30:46.a punch to end the contest. Flynn remains incredibly composed. And

:30:47. > :30:59.incredibly relaxed. The crowd increased their volume once again.

:31:00. > :31:06.There goes the bell. And the crowd here at the Hydro Arena stand to

:31:07. > :31:13.applaud young Charlie Flynn, just 20 years old. Surely he has just

:31:14. > :31:18.secured himself the lightweight title here at the Glasgow

:31:19. > :31:23.Commonwealth Games. A quick kiss for the canvas and a warm embrace from

:31:24. > :31:30.his coaching staff. What a great performance from such a young man.

:31:31. > :31:35.He boxed superbly well and the semifinal, but here, he raised the

:31:36. > :31:46.tempo again against a tricky guy. But he got the tactics wrong today,

:31:47. > :31:51.Fitzpatrick. Flynn's movement to the left was crucial. And he played to

:31:52. > :32:01.the crowd. Jumps up on the ring, Commonwealth champion. What a moment

:32:02. > :32:04.for young Charlie Flynn. Huge admirer of one of the greatest

:32:05. > :32:10.amateur boxers of all time, Dick McTaggart. This announcement will

:32:11. > :32:18.surely see him emulate the legendary Scotsman. Ladies and gentlemen, the

:32:19. > :32:21.judges are in agreement. The winner by unanimous decision and now the

:32:22. > :32:26.Commonwealth gold medallist and men's lightweight champion, in the

:32:27. > :32:37.red corner, representing Scotland, Charlie Flynn! What a moment for

:32:38. > :32:42.Motherwell's Charlie Flynn. The 20-year-old postal worker has just

:32:43. > :32:50.delivered a gold medal for himself, his club and his adoring fans. Such

:32:51. > :32:56.clever boxing during that final. Such tactical astuteness on show

:32:57. > :33:00.throughout the entire tournament. And the man who was the highest

:33:01. > :33:06.ranked boxer in the Commonwealth Games lightweight competition has

:33:07. > :33:13.secured himself top spot on the medal podium. Charlie Flynn,

:33:14. > :33:19.Commonwealth Games lightweight champion, in front of his adoring

:33:20. > :33:23.home fans in a Hydro Arena that is packed to capacity, a moment he will

:33:24. > :33:28.never forget. And at just 20 years old, surely we will see this man on

:33:29. > :33:36.the Olympic boxing circuit for many years to come.

:33:37. > :33:39.JOHN INVERDALE: the Hampden roar earlier this week was for Eilidh

:33:40. > :33:43.Child, but that is surely the biggest cheer for any Scottish

:33:44. > :33:48.medallist and it is a Scottish gold medallist. We will talk to him in a

:33:49. > :33:54.moment. Joe has made his way down to see us again. You gave it

:33:55. > :34:00.everything. It was a good fight. I don't know what was wrong with me,

:34:01. > :34:06.just a bit sluggish. Tired? Just hanging about here from 11 this

:34:07. > :34:10.morning. It is strange. It is a tough schedule, fight after fight

:34:11. > :34:17.after five. It is always hard. Tough fight last night, so that probably

:34:18. > :34:23.made me tired as well. Did not get much sleep last night. But fair play

:34:24. > :34:29.to Charlie. Did that cut play on your mind? I was trying not to think

:34:30. > :34:34.on it too much. I was just drained, I don't know what was wrong. Thanks

:34:35. > :34:43.for joining us. And hey, the champion. Well done. Fantastic

:34:44. > :34:51.performance. Thanks. He is a really awkward boy. Sometimes you need to

:34:52. > :35:05.be awkward to beat awkwardness. It was a hard fight. What tactics did

:35:06. > :35:14.you use for this fight? I was not going straight back, I was kind of

:35:15. > :35:19.angling down. He likes his 12s. So I came across an cut him off. And what

:35:20. > :35:29.did you make of the crowd? When they announced you the winner? Honestly,

:35:30. > :35:31.the crowd are unbelievable. The reception you got when you were in

:35:32. > :35:41.the ring before the fight began was amazing. It was like a thunderstorm,

:35:42. > :35:46.man. I can't explain it. I would just like to thank everybody who has

:35:47. > :35:52.helped me, especially my dad, who has been training me for the past

:35:53. > :35:58.four years. Two hours every morning all stops at first all his leisure

:35:59. > :36:05.time. My mum has been washing my clothes. I would not be anywhere

:36:06. > :36:09.without them. The work that goes on in the background, nobody will

:36:10. > :36:18.understand it. Did you catch their eye on the final bout? Your family

:36:19. > :36:23.and friends, could you see them? No, they were like ants out there. It

:36:24. > :36:32.was amazing. I would like to thank God for the thing he has given me.

:36:33. > :36:35.There are other countries that have not got much, so you are thankful

:36:36. > :36:40.for your health, your well-being, the place you are in. And you might

:36:41. > :36:49.want to thank the Royal Mail? Come on, the Royal Mail! The mailman

:36:50. > :36:59.delivers once again. All the boys, the managers and all the crew, Jason

:37:00. > :37:10.Grant! You are Commonwealth gold medallist now. What is next for you?

:37:11. > :37:17.I don't know, man. I am not used to hearing that, gold medal! I don't

:37:18. > :37:23.know what is next. You know what I mean? Maybe Olympics. Just wait and

:37:24. > :37:30.see. A lot of funding is needed. I work part-time, and everybody I am

:37:31. > :37:35.fighting is full-time. I think there is a job for you as a chat show

:37:36. > :37:43.host. Fancy that? I would be a right good laugh! Congratulations. You are

:37:44. > :37:47.Commonwealth Games champion. Well, from one champion will have a

:37:48. > :37:53.medal ceremony in a moment to one two is just about to enjoy it. This

:37:54. > :38:00.is the great moment for Michael Conlan, from Northern Ireland. Well,

:38:01. > :38:06.there was a man familiar to boxing fans around the world, especially in

:38:07. > :38:11.Scotland. The flyweight games gold medallist from 1998 in Kuala Lumpur.

:38:12. > :38:17.And to help him present the medals and trophies, it was meant to have

:38:18. > :38:20.been the president of the Commonwealth Games Association from

:38:21. > :38:31.Papua in New Guinea, but that is clearly not he. A very disappointed

:38:32. > :38:42.Shaun McGoldrick got the gold medal in Delhi four years ago. He was not

:38:43. > :38:53.able to make it two golds out of two. My colleague from BBC radio

:38:54. > :38:58.Scotland is presenting the medals. He had the misfortune to come up

:38:59. > :39:09.against a very much in four Michael Conlan from Northern Ireland. He

:39:10. > :39:12.receives his quaich. The winner of the bronze medal, representing

:39:13. > :39:23.Kenya! 29 years of age. I'm not sure if we

:39:24. > :39:28.will see him in another Commonwealth Games. He is young enough to compete

:39:29. > :39:38.in four years' time, when everything moves to the Sunshine Coast of

:39:39. > :39:41.Australia. But he was outboxed by Qais Ashfaq of England in the

:39:42. > :39:51.semifinal, so has to contend himself with a bronze medal. Now we get to

:39:52. > :40:01.the silvers and the gold. The winner of the Silver medal, representing

:40:02. > :40:06.England, Qais Ashfaq! He won his opening round in the final and just

:40:07. > :40:09.could not sustain the pressure because the man he was up against

:40:10. > :40:14.had just that little bit more experience. But he has just turned

:40:15. > :40:18.21 and as he said in an interview not long ago, there is a lot more to

:40:19. > :40:24.come from him. He can take great heart on this and I am sure we will

:40:25. > :40:38.be seeing him on podiums around the world. But there can only be one

:40:39. > :40:45.winner, only one gold medallist. Olympic bronze European silver. The

:40:46. > :41:00.boy from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Michael Conlan. He boxed splendidly

:41:01. > :41:16.throughout this tournament. Got a nasty gash above his right eye.

:41:17. > :41:25.And for the second time here, in the boxing tournament in Glasgow 2014,

:41:26. > :42:12.everyone will rise for the national anthem of Northern Ireland.

:42:13. > :42:45.# Danny Boy (NATIONAL ANTHEM OF NORTHERN IRELAND).

:42:46. > :43:00.APPLAUSE. A lot of applause for Conlon, he was

:43:01. > :43:11.absolutely terrified not to win and sharing room with Paddy Barnes if he

:43:12. > :43:16.had not won. A wonderfully understated smile from Michael

:43:17. > :43:22.Conlon. A sense of a job well done. You have been there, sometimes you

:43:23. > :43:26.don't want to scream from the rafters, there is that feeling

:43:27. > :43:32.inside that all of the hard work has paid off. Especially when you have

:43:33. > :43:36.done all that long training camp, spending time away from your family

:43:37. > :43:43.and friends, you want to win, and relax. What I love about boxing,

:43:44. > :43:49.these lads, they are shaking each other's hands, just minutes ago they

:43:50. > :43:54.were fighting each other. They have their respect for each other. It is

:43:55. > :44:01.the simplest and most are raw of all sports. I hate you, you hit me. You

:44:02. > :44:08.are going there to hurt someone and beat someone up. Great to see so

:44:09. > :44:14.much respect. The atmosphere, I hope that home you can feel what it is

:44:15. > :44:23.like it. Absolutely fantastic. Going up a few decibel is, and it will go

:44:24. > :44:28.up for Josh Taylor. He was in many ways their best hope for goals

:44:29. > :44:31.before the games. He fought Maxwell yesterday, put on a great

:44:32. > :44:37.performance. It would have been an amazing final, but it happened in

:44:38. > :44:44.the semis. He looked really good, really sharp, awkward, quick hands,

:44:45. > :44:56.power, speed. I am looking forward to this fight. He's fighting Jonas,

:44:57. > :45:01.from Namibia, he holds his hands so low, you think you could get in, but

:45:02. > :45:09.he's so quick on his feet and his hands. Great footwork. Very quick,

:45:10. > :45:17.very strong. Taylor has two watch those shots. When they come from the

:45:18. > :45:25.waist, you don't see them. I'm sure Josh has watched some video, and

:45:26. > :45:29.knows what to expect. Charlie Flynn is still doing interviews, he may

:45:30. > :45:34.miss his medal ceremony. He will talk to anybody tonight. He was

:45:35. > :45:43.inspired by the crowd in that last contest. There are some occasions

:45:44. > :45:49.where the crowd can change the way you fight. You get in the moment,

:45:50. > :45:55.and the crowd makes you more intense when you are looking to be calm. You

:45:56. > :46:00.want to be calm, but it is great when the crowd get a you. You fight

:46:01. > :46:07.for the crowd, it makes a big difference, a big help. People

:46:08. > :46:18.supporting you, pushing you. That is the cheering for Josh Taylor. If you

:46:19. > :46:24.have been robust two o'clock, we have had a couple of hours of the

:46:25. > :46:29.most fantastically intense, entertaining, dynamic competition in

:46:30. > :46:34.the ring. Six really good fights. This will round off the afternoon's

:46:35. > :46:45.entertainment. Everybody has been getting into this in a big way.

:46:46. > :46:53.Listen to the raw as -- listen to the noise as Josh Taylor enters the

:46:54. > :46:56.ring. Charlie Flynn will no doubt want to watch fellow countrymen in

:46:57. > :47:06.this Commonwealth Games boxing final. Josh Taylor already at

:47:07. > :47:13.ringside, taking it all in. He has lit up this tournament, only 20

:47:14. > :47:21.years of age. This man from Namibia, they have only ever won one

:47:22. > :47:27.medal at the Commonwealth Games. Like Taylor, he has won every

:47:28. > :47:38.contest by unanimous decision, has had to box four times to get there.

:47:39. > :47:52.Beating Sean Duffy in the semifinal. He had to be at his Olympic best.

:47:53. > :48:00.Ladies and gentlemen, now introducing in the red corner,

:48:01. > :48:28.representing Scotland, Josh Taylor. Across the ring in the blue corner,

:48:29. > :48:32.representing Namibia, Junias Jonas. The referee from Ireland, Mr Mickey

:48:33. > :48:51.Gallagher. Three, three-minute rounds.

:48:52. > :48:58.Let's not forget the men coming out of the red corner, the Scotsman,

:48:59. > :49:04.Josh Taylor already has a Commonwealth Games medal, winning

:49:05. > :49:11.silver four years ago in Delhi, in the lightweight division. He is

:49:12. > :49:21.hoping to turn silver into gold here. Is that trans-mutable? We will

:49:22. > :49:31.have to find out. The box for Britain in the Olympics two years

:49:32. > :49:37.ago, against a very exciting talent, from Namibia. A very unorthodox

:49:38. > :49:45.style. He has a very long reach, very fast hands. Richie Woodall?

:49:46. > :49:50.Taylor has to raise his game. Yesterday against Sam Maxwell, most

:49:51. > :49:59.people predicted that would have been the final. In his mind, he may

:50:00. > :50:04.have thought he has a ready won this gold. He has one heck of an

:50:05. > :50:10.opponent, this guy is very talented, very fit, makes a lot of mistakes.

:50:11. > :50:19.Takes a lotta risks. Throws shots from all different angles, a

:50:20. > :50:23.difficult man to get sued, so tool. Taylor had a tough passage, fairly

:50:24. > :50:33.straightforward against the boxer from Botswana, then the guy from

:50:34. > :50:42.Mauritius, Zach Davies from Wales, and Sam Maxwell in the semi.

:50:43. > :50:47.Cautious stuff from Josh Taylor. Not getting close enough to this fellow.

:50:48. > :50:52.Good footwork, conceding a lot of height and reach. This guide

:50:53. > :51:01.thrashes those hands from waist level. -- this guy. He should target

:51:02. > :51:08.the left uppercut, triggering the attack. As his opponent is coming

:51:09. > :51:15.forward, the hands are very low, his feet are crossing. He comes forward,

:51:16. > :51:19.the feet cross, open, low, you have to hit the target.

:51:20. > :51:33.The referee steps in, voted the best official in the 2012 Olympics. You

:51:34. > :51:40.could got -- could not get a better man for a final. When he gets to

:51:41. > :51:47.him, causing him problems, Taylor. Great last 30 seconds. There is the

:51:48. > :51:52.sweet left hand from the Scotsman. He is justifying his favourite's

:51:53. > :51:59.tag. Good end of the round by Josh Taylor. Would be very surprised if

:52:00. > :52:01.he has not got it. He boxed a very clever there, using the crowd to

:52:02. > :52:24.read him up. -- to G him up. It was a good round, boxing clever.

:52:25. > :52:34.Let's have a look at the scores, every judge. Terrific finish, just

:52:35. > :52:41.measuring his man up and stop coming up against someone so much bigger,

:52:42. > :52:46.with so much reach advantage. He worked in map, and press time is

:52:47. > :53:01.advantage. This is the final of the men's welterweight division, 64

:53:02. > :53:08.kilograms. -- worked him out, pressed home his advantage. Taylor

:53:09. > :53:14.working again, straight left hand. Taylor is a good counterpuncher.

:53:15. > :53:24.When he gets on the inside, stay compact, held those in. Coming out

:53:25. > :53:36.of the clinch, lending the FIFA. -- landing the hook. Slipping away from

:53:37. > :53:44.his opponent there. Taylor covering up nicely. Lots of experience, a

:53:45. > :53:49.couple of World Championships. Going out to eventual medal winners. In

:53:50. > :54:04.London, winning his opening contest, then losing to Valentino of

:54:05. > :54:09.Italy. Taylor boxing nicely, very nearly got clipped with the right

:54:10. > :54:15.hand. Jonas showing signs of fatigue. He has raised the tempo

:54:16. > :54:21.slightly, starting to throw a few more shots, but that leaves him

:54:22. > :54:37.open, he makes so many mistakes. Low hands. There is the hook. A good

:54:38. > :54:44.little sequence by Jonas, boxing a little better. His feet have slowed

:54:45. > :54:58.down. Bad mistake by Jonas, getting a -- away with it. I am watching for

:54:59. > :55:10.Taylor's left hook. We know that Josh Taylor can punch with that

:55:11. > :55:16.left-hand in particular. He has experience in the Olympics, Taylor,

:55:17. > :55:22.clever with it. That is nice. And again by Taylor. The right hand was

:55:23. > :55:27.not as accurate as the left. A good right hand by Taylor, changing

:55:28. > :55:39.direction, frustrating the younger, taller, raw or a man. 20 seconds

:55:40. > :55:48.remaining. -- raw fighter. Adapting very well, counterpunching, coming

:55:49. > :56:00.back again. Clever boxing. A good right hand by Jonas. That might be a

:56:01. > :56:11.split round. I think Taylor has definitely won it. This guy just up

:56:12. > :56:21.the tempo slightly. He leaves himself open.

:56:22. > :56:36.I think Taylor has got it on all three judges' cards again. All in

:56:37. > :56:41.favour of the Scott, who is three minutes away from becoming

:56:42. > :56:49.Scotland's second successive gold medallist here in Glasgow 2014. I

:56:50. > :57:05.wonder what Charlie Flynn's take on this one will be. In less than three

:57:06. > :57:10.minutes, Josh Taylor will hear the last bell and I am pretty sure what

:57:11. > :57:18.will go around his neck will be a Commonwealth gold medal to add to

:57:19. > :57:22.the silver he won four years ago. Jonas, the big fellow in bloom from

:57:23. > :57:30.Namibian, will have to do a lot of work if he is going to steal this.

:57:31. > :57:43.The front foot tactics of Jonas will suit Josh Taylor. He boxes better as

:57:44. > :57:53.a counterpuncher. Showing his experience. The crowd here are

:57:54. > :57:59.encouraging Josh Taylor to get on his bike a bit. Jonas is coming

:58:00. > :58:03.steaming forward. We must only man apology, because we questioned his

:58:04. > :58:08.fitness -- we owe him an apology. He has such a high work rate, Taylor is

:58:09. > :58:20.having to cover up. Sometimes when you see boxers going

:58:21. > :58:25.like this, you say to yourself, why did he not do this in the first

:58:26. > :58:39.round? We have said that this fellow is a very fit kid indeed.

:58:40. > :58:47.Jonas is winning this hands down at the moment. That was a slip,

:58:48. > :59:06.according to the referee. Josh Taylor is conceding shots in

:59:07. > :59:18.this last round. Jonas is giving everything he has. Taylor is having

:59:19. > :59:23.to cover up. He is under pressure like never before in this

:59:24. > :59:30.tournament. Remember, he has got through against three very strong

:59:31. > :59:35.opponents. Jonas has kept his best to last, but it is all a bit too

:59:36. > :59:40.late. Gallagher will ask them to break up, perhaps for the last time.

:59:41. > :59:44.Jonas, whose tactics have been perfect in this round, why did you

:59:45. > :59:50.do this earlier on? He has won the round. He has lost the first two.

:59:51. > :00:05.That is probably what Taylor is thinking. I am pretty sure Taylor

:00:06. > :00:11.has done enough. Scotland will have another gold medallist here on home

:00:12. > :00:15.territory. What a Commonwealth Games the host nation is having. What a

:00:16. > :00:22.performance from this young man, 20 years of age. Josh Taylor, silver

:00:23. > :00:28.medallist from Delhi four years ago, has got home. He gambled a bit in

:00:29. > :00:36.that run, because he knew he had won the first two rounds. Jonas clearly

:00:37. > :00:43.won the last round, in our opinion. Taylor rallied at the end. He was

:00:44. > :00:54.under pressure. Jonas kept his man on the ropes. A Tory ground for

:00:55. > :01:08.Taylor. -- a torrid round for Taylor. Jonas certainly took that

:01:09. > :01:15.last round. Maybe not enough to make it a 10-8 round. The jubilant Taylor

:01:16. > :01:21.will be even happier when that hand is raised. Ladies and gentlemen, we

:01:22. > :01:25.have the judges' scorecards. The winner by unanimous decision, now

:01:26. > :01:29.gold medallist and Commonwealth men's light welterweight champion,

:01:30. > :01:38.in the red corner, representing Scotland, Josh Taylor! Scotland's

:01:39. > :01:50.second gold medal in 2014 goes to Josh Taylor. And everybody gave Josh

:01:51. > :01:55.Taylor the last round as well. I am very surprised at that. Jonas will

:01:56. > :02:02.be disappointed that he did not even win on anybody's card. But Josh

:02:03. > :02:05.Taylor will not care about that. He is ecstatic. Gold number two of

:02:06. > :02:15.these games in the boxing arena for Scotland. This one courtesy of a

:02:16. > :02:17.thoroughly delighted Josh Taylor. JOHN INVERDALE: the afternoon ends

:02:18. > :02:23.on the highest of high notes for Scottish boxing and for the 16,000

:02:24. > :02:28.or so here in the Hydro Arena. To mark your card for tonight, we have

:02:29. > :02:33.six fights coming up for you, six more finals. Coverage starts at

:02:34. > :02:38.seven on BBC Three. But all afternoon on BBC One, we have had

:02:39. > :02:43.two gold medals for Australia, two for Northern Ireland, but obviously,

:02:44. > :02:48.we finish with two for Scotland. The Scots thought Josh Taylor was their

:02:49. > :02:54.man, and he did what we thought. Great performance. This amazing

:02:55. > :03:00.crowd of people were out there, rooting for Josh Taylor. He put on a

:03:01. > :03:05.great performance. The first two rounds, he won comfortably. The last

:03:06. > :03:14.round, he knew he had the fight in the bag. A whole gaggle, I suspect

:03:15. > :03:20.that is probably his family, maybe his mum. Charlie was saying earlier

:03:21. > :03:27.that you can't do it without your support team. It is agony, because

:03:28. > :03:31.they can't win the fight. You have got to do the fighting. Josh, I know

:03:32. > :03:36.you want to say well done to everybody. Was that your family?

:03:37. > :03:41.Yeah, my mother, my sister and my girlfriend. They are over the moon.

:03:42. > :03:46.So am I. Can't believe it. Doesn't feel real. We just had a

:03:47. > :03:50.conversation about Charlie about what it was like for him. How was it

:03:51. > :03:56.for you when you walked in and got that operation? Has handing up on

:03:57. > :04:03.the back of my neck. -- hairs standing up on the back of your

:04:04. > :04:10.neck. Unbelievable. I felt it at the Olympics in London, but that was

:04:11. > :04:15.mad. I saw that you were on your back foot. Did you know you had the

:04:16. > :04:20.fight in the bag 's yeah, I knew I had two rounds in the bag, so I

:04:21. > :04:25.wanted to stay safe. Did not want to go with silly shots. I just wanted

:04:26. > :04:33.to secure the gold. What does this mean to you? I have trained for this

:04:34. > :04:36.for years. I have dreamt of this for god knows how long. Can't wait to

:04:37. > :04:44.stand on top of the podium. Are you going to sing flower of Scotland?

:04:45. > :04:49.100%. Congratulations. Two gold medals for Scotland, back-to-back.

:04:50. > :04:55.Fantastic for everybody. And brilliant for amateur boxing in

:04:56. > :04:58.Scotland. Over the moon. Well done. Look forward to seeing you on the

:04:59. > :05:04.podium. The lone piper is waiting in the ring. That is for the first

:05:05. > :05:08.airing of flower of Scotland this afternoon, which Jim Neilly will

:05:09. > :05:12.describe for us. While waiting for the Ox is to appear, what has been

:05:13. > :05:20.your take on the afternoon so far? Some good boxing. Especially the

:05:21. > :05:24.Scottish fighters, what good performances they put on. They

:05:25. > :05:29.soaked up all the atmosphere and the crowd. But overall, the boxing has

:05:30. > :05:37.been really good, starting with the mitre weights and finishing with

:05:38. > :05:44.Josh on a serious high. The bagpipes play, and this is the moment. The

:05:45. > :05:51.man has written his own headline. He said, the mailman delivers, and the

:05:52. > :05:58.mailman has. These are the bag pipes, and the Commonwealth Games

:05:59. > :06:01.theme for Charlie Flynn. And I suspect that his face, and that

:06:02. > :06:04.clenched fist and those clenched teeth will be the pictures on all

:06:05. > :06:10.the editions of the Scottish newspapers tomorrow. Who knows what

:06:11. > :06:14.the future holds for Charlie Flynn? But this is a moment he will never

:06:15. > :06:17.forget. Those of us who have been lucky enough to be had they will

:06:18. > :06:21.remember it for a long time, the way he performed, the way he celebrated,

:06:22. > :06:25.the way he spoke afterwards. I suspect he may have something in

:06:26. > :06:33.store for us during the course of this medal representation. Let's go

:06:34. > :06:36.back to that. Charlie Flynn, still absolutely

:06:37. > :06:41.buzzing with delight as he makes his way towards the ring. He will take

:06:42. > :06:52.his place on the gold medal rostrum at grade Williams round -- after a

:06:53. > :07:01.brilliant round. He is the man who occupies them to stage as the

:07:02. > :07:19.medallists take their position in anticipation of receiving their

:07:20. > :07:24.respective medals. The medals will be presented by the 1958

:07:25. > :07:36.Commonwealth and 1956 Olympic gold medal athlete, Richard Mactaggart!

:07:37. > :07:39.Dick McTaggart, one of the finest amateur boxers of all time and a

:07:40. > :07:53.real hero for Charlie Flynn, will present the medals. And Wellington

:07:54. > :08:01.Miller! Great to see Dick McTaggart. Does not look to be too

:08:02. > :08:04.far above his fighting weight. The winner of the bronze medal,

:08:05. > :08:26.representing Wales! The Welshman comes away with a

:08:27. > :08:39.Commonwealth Games bronze medal. Acknowledged in his support in the

:08:40. > :08:45.crowd. He joins his clubmate as a Commonwealth bronze medallist. What

:08:46. > :08:58.a moment it must be to be receiving that prize from the great Dick

:08:59. > :09:10.McTaggart. Joe Cordina, the bronze medallist. He had tough bouts all

:09:11. > :09:22.the way through, but comes away with some championship hardware to show

:09:23. > :09:28.for it. Representing Trinidad and Tobago, Michael Alexander! Michael

:09:29. > :09:36.Alexander prepared for this Commonwealth Games down in Cuba. If

:09:37. > :09:40.she ranked boxer in the world, he was sensational throughout the

:09:41. > :09:51.tournament -- 15th ranked Ox. But then just lost a bit of zip in his

:09:52. > :10:02.final round. Just 21 years old, he surely has a bright future in

:10:03. > :10:10.Olympic boxing. The winner of the silver medal, representing Northern

:10:11. > :10:17.Ireland, Joe Fitzpatrick! Joe Fitzpatrick is still a teenager.

:10:18. > :10:34.Took Commonwealth youth bronze in 2011. And here, at just 19, he has

:10:35. > :10:37.got himself a silver medal. He said he felt a bit flat when he

:10:38. > :10:42.considered their hard passage through to the gold medal fight, but

:10:43. > :10:54.a wonderful achievement for the man from Northern Ireland. Listen to the

:10:55. > :11:00.ovation that this Manuel Neuer she's -- that this man will receive.

:11:01. > :11:08.Representing Scotland, Commonwealth champion, Charlie Flynn. The roof

:11:09. > :11:16.has been raised in the Hydro, young and old taking inspiration from this

:11:17. > :11:23.man. Charlie Flynn. Ranked 23 in the lightweight division. He produced a

:11:24. > :11:30.brilliant tournament, what a moment for him, to receive a handshake, and

:11:31. > :11:38.Commonwealth gold medal from his idol, the Commonwealth Games

:11:39. > :11:44.champion from 1988. Charlie Flynn, Commonwealth champion. Ladies and

:11:45. > :12:07.gentlemen, the national anthem of Scotland.

:12:08. > :13:46.In the presence of one of the finest boxers of all time, Dick McTaggart,

:13:47. > :13:54.he has been presented with his championship gold. That I suspect is

:13:55. > :14:01.the defining Scottish moment of these Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

:14:02. > :14:08.The face that will define the games. Two great champions separated by 56

:14:09. > :14:16.years, Dick McTaggart, and Charlie Flynn. If you have not heard about

:14:17. > :14:23.Dick McTaggart, in 634 amateur fights, he won 610. Absolute legend

:14:24. > :14:30.very figure in Scottish sport. Olympic gold medallist. Who's to say

:14:31. > :14:34.that this man will not be an Olympic gold medallist in a couple of years

:14:35. > :14:41.time? Definitely, looks like he has the skills. He has the charisma to

:14:42. > :14:49.go all the way. He is a likeable person. He can go all the way, and

:14:50. > :14:54.be the face of boxing in Scotland. Only 20 years old, long way to go

:14:55. > :14:59.yet. What an experience to win this gold, and move onto a bigger

:15:00. > :15:04.tournament like the world, Europeans. Shortly they may come

:15:05. > :15:12.knocking and say how that turning professional? You would think, hang

:15:13. > :15:18.on, stay amateur, couple more years, getting more mature. There will be a

:15:19. > :15:27.lot of promoters knocking on his door. He is a funny character.

:15:28. > :15:32.Imagine him in a press conference. One thing about the press

:15:33. > :15:37.conference, it will be long. Tonight, four fights to look forward

:15:38. > :15:41.to, four English boxers, Anthony Fowler, you are looking forward to?

:15:42. > :15:50.He was very good, putting his opponent down, very strong. I think

:15:51. > :15:56.he can go all the way. He has good boxing skills. He had some tough

:15:57. > :16:06.fights, got through them. I would put my money on him going all the

:16:07. > :16:10.way. Marshall, Fitzgerald, and Joe Joyce, against the Australian,

:16:11. > :16:20.Little Ashes thing to be missing off. He is looking good, the

:16:21. > :16:24.heavyweight. Definitely he can end it with a gold medal, that would be

:16:25. > :16:30.amazing for England. Thanks for being with us, looking forward to

:16:31. > :16:37.tonight? Looking forward to it. Just thinking about the headlines,

:16:38. > :16:48.Charlie is the darling, Bonnie Prince Charming. He works at the

:16:49. > :16:57.sorting office Damia Motherwell, to all the guys and girls, one heck of

:16:58. > :17:03.a party. -- down in Motherwell. They supported him to train for these

:17:04. > :17:16.games. As for Josh Taylor, his dad calls him Pebbles, not rocky yet. --

:17:17. > :17:22.not Rocky yet. A couple of gold medals for Northern Ireland, moving

:17:23. > :17:30.up from 24th to 15th. Let's show you that table. England smashing their

:17:31. > :17:37.target of 146. It looks as if they will be topping the table for the

:17:38. > :17:45.first time since 1986. Scotland with their 19th gold, in fact 18th and

:17:46. > :17:52.19. Let's remind you of the headlines, pretty eventful. As I was

:17:53. > :17:57.saying, the wait for gold for Northern Ireland is over, Paddy

:17:58. > :18:06.Barnes and Michael Conlon, they moved up to 15th. Two for Scotland

:18:07. > :18:10.with Charlie Flynn and Josh Taylor. Nicola Adams making history as the

:18:11. > :18:16.first woman to win a boxing gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. It

:18:17. > :18:28.was controversial, a split decision over Michaela Walsh. The husband and

:18:29. > :18:34.wife team, Joanna and Paul Drinkhall winning the mixed doubles table

:18:35. > :18:39.tennis. A provisional disqualification and suspension for

:18:40. > :18:46.a failed drugs test following the 400 metres final. She finished

:18:47. > :18:53.fourth. Testing positive for a stimulant. More on that story, we

:18:54. > :19:03.hear her bees sample will be tested on Sunday. -- other sample will be

:19:04. > :19:04.tested on Monday. But take a break for the news now.
