:00:26. > :00:35.final day of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Usain Bolt danced his
:00:36. > :00:40.way to a gold medal last night, and there are more big moments coming
:00:41. > :00:58.today. Before the news, Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour tug on Michelle Li.
:00:59. > :01:03.Congratulations to Michelle Li, but what a terrific campaign that Kirsty
:01:04. > :01:13.Gilmour has had. In the past few minutes, England have just beaten
:01:14. > :01:21.New Zealand in hockey in a shoot out. A great result. Facing the New
:01:22. > :01:26.Zealand side, they proved their nemesis in recent major tournaments.
:01:27. > :01:41.The Black Sticks one on penalties in 2010, and that is a great result.
:01:42. > :01:48.After the drama of the hockey and badminton, time to settle down and
:01:49. > :01:53.enjoy the men's Road race. We can join Jonathan Edwards and Chris
:01:54. > :01:57.Boardman. It is very wet out here and we have
:01:58. > :02:03.the own brother out. It started raining towards the end of the
:02:04. > :02:05.women's race. Lizzie Armitstead took the gold medal in that and Emma
:02:06. > :02:09.Pooley got silver. This is a tricky course technically, and worse in
:02:10. > :02:17.these conditions. Worse weather is expected later. It adds some drama.
:02:18. > :02:19.I went expected later. It adds some drama.
:02:20. > :02:27.I round the course yesterday when it was like this, and there are many
:02:28. > :02:37.hazards. There are cobbles, transition from large roads to small
:02:38. > :02:40.roads, descents. There is a lot of corners. We saw a
:02:41. > :02:43.roads, descents. There is a lot of corners. We saw group of seven
:02:44. > :02:52.getaway in the women's race. What would you expect in this men's
:02:53. > :02:57.race? It will take longer to whittle down, but it will be attritional. It
:02:58. > :03:02.will get down to a small group which will fight it out at the finish.
:03:03. > :03:07.Home Nations success in the women's race, and we are looking for the
:03:08. > :03:15.same in the men's race. David Millar is the hero of the story, hoping to
:03:16. > :03:21.do well here. It is a swansong for a multisport competition, and I think
:03:22. > :03:25.David cannot match the others on the climbs, but he can match them on
:03:26. > :03:29.strategy, and I think we will see him launching some attacks over the
:03:30. > :03:34.tops of some of the small rises. And the Welsh have a strong team,
:03:35. > :03:40.especially Geraint Thomas. Yes, he is always in the action, whether it
:03:41. > :03:46.is the Tour de France or the Commonwealth Games. This is a
:03:47. > :03:51.perfect course for him and I hope he grabs the opportunity. A big star in
:03:52. > :03:58.the Isle of Man team, Mark Cavendish. A lot of people are
:03:59. > :04:06.picking out Peter Kenyon as a potential winner. Is a punchy
:04:07. > :04:16.rider, well suited to this kind of course, and wait until right at the
:04:17. > :04:21.death, and he will be launching some attacks. He could live up to the
:04:22. > :04:29.status of being the favourite. It is pouring down now. Ian Stannard is
:04:30. > :04:35.good in the rain. A strong writer, but not quite as punchy. He did well
:04:36. > :04:39.in the nationals, but in this competition, if they let him get
:04:40. > :04:43.away, he is dangerous. He is the man who, if you are going to brake away,
:04:44. > :04:47.they will think they can get him in a sprint, but if you let him get
:04:48. > :04:54.away from you, he is on diesel, and difficult to pull back. Australia
:04:55. > :05:03.and New Zealand, as always, have strong teams. Rohan Dennis is on
:05:04. > :05:10.great form. Is the big danger from Australia. And Jack Bauer from New
:05:11. > :05:13.Zealand. Good afternoon to Simon Brotherton.
:05:14. > :05:23.Good afternoon, everyone. We are almost ready to go here in
:05:24. > :05:27.the men's Road race. A soggy start. Most of the women's race was in dry
:05:28. > :05:30.conditions before the heavens opened for the last couple of laps, but it
:05:31. > :05:37.has been raining continuously since then. Now the men faced 12 laps of
:05:38. > :05:52.the same circuit, the 14 kilometre circuit, 160 Edghill mutters in
:05:53. > :05:55.total. -- 168 kilometres in total. The field will be whittled down to a
:05:56. > :06:03.considerably smaller number fairly quickly here. That is not a very
:06:04. > :06:10.good start for the riders from Wales. That would be Jon Mould, who
:06:11. > :06:14.needs some service, literally about 20 yards after leaving the start
:06:15. > :06:18.line. Scott Davis had a problem with his bike within about 200 yards off
:06:19. > :06:24.the start of the time trial be the day. And another mechanical problem
:06:25. > :06:27.this time for Jon Mould, but luckily for him, the race is only just
:06:28. > :06:31.getting underway and he should be able to get back on the rear end of
:06:32. > :06:39.the peloton without too much difficulty. The Australian team
:06:40. > :06:51.gathered up towards the frontier. We will see a lot of them, Mark Renshaw
:06:52. > :06:57.is a team-mate of Mark Cavendish. The elder statesmen of the
:06:58. > :07:00.Australian team at 31 years old, and this is the first time he has
:07:01. > :07:05.represented Australia in a national shirt for the last decade. An
:07:06. > :07:12.ignominious start for Jon Mould, who has had a good season, he won
:07:13. > :07:24.tournament earlier. Already stuck some distance behind
:07:25. > :07:27.the peloton on Glasgow Green. I do not think that is the first
:07:28. > :07:31.mechanical we will see today in these conditions. To be honest, if
:07:32. > :07:39.you are going to have one, this is the best part of the race. It gives
:07:40. > :07:44.it a chance to get back in the race. Here we are, along Argyle Street for
:07:45. > :07:49.the first time, through the chicane. In the not too distant
:07:50. > :07:54.future, the 90 degrees right hands turn on the smooth and increasingly
:07:55. > :08:00.slippery pedestrianised area of Buchanan Street. It looks very
:08:01. > :08:05.different to the women's race this morning, still some damp patches
:08:06. > :08:08.about, but largely dried. Now it looks like a sheet of glass, and
:08:09. > :08:13.that is what it feels like under the wheel as well. There are a few white
:08:14. > :08:18.lines to be negotiated, all of the slippery hazards that can start the
:08:19. > :08:27.back wheel sliding. Once it starts to go, there is no recovering. Along
:08:28. > :08:38.right here, Jon Mould, to get back. -- a long ride here. The first
:08:39. > :08:46.little incline on St Vincent Street. About to come onto the horizon for
:08:47. > :08:52.the riders. A deceptively large amount of climbing, actually,
:08:53. > :08:59.cumulatively, in this event. Six small runs of varying gradients are
:09:00. > :09:06.dotted around this course mother they add up to 109 feet of climbing
:09:07. > :09:10.in each lap, and that is 7200 feet climbing over the course of the
:09:11. > :09:15.race, so quite deceptive. That looks like Luke Rowe for Wales, trying to
:09:16. > :09:23.force the pace early on, with the black top on. It is not a long race
:09:24. > :09:30.for some of these riders, who are used to riding well over 200
:09:31. > :09:34.commenters. -- 200 kilometres. Everyone is happy to be at the front
:09:35. > :09:43.and out of trouble in such difficult conditions. Peter Kenyon shows his
:09:44. > :09:57.face at the front for the first time. He is one of the fancied
:09:58. > :09:58.riders in this race. That is quite surprising. I thought he would be
:09:59. > :09:59.putting surprising. I thought he would be
:10:00. > :10:03.himself out of harm's way at surprising. I thought he would be
:10:04. > :10:06.front. It is nice to pick your own line when you are getting used to
:10:07. > :10:14.that turns on the circuit here, but he is really pressing on on this
:10:15. > :10:20.first lap. Curious tactics here, not quite sure, not something I would
:10:21. > :10:25.expect to see at this stage of the race, but clearly it is
:10:26. > :10:32.expect to see at this stage of the move, and it makes it difficult to
:10:33. > :10:38.chase. Perhaps he feels it is best to get out at the front and deal
:10:39. > :10:39.with the corners alone. The rain is absolutely pouring down here in
:10:40. > :10:49.I am sure he is hoping that he will Glasgow.
:10:50. > :10:51.I am sure he is hoping that he will get some company,
:10:52. > :10:56.I am sure he is hoping that he will that to be in a small group on a
:10:57. > :11:02.circuit like this, he will be better placed to tackle the race. I
:11:03. > :11:05.certainly think there will be, as you have mentioned before,
:11:06. > :11:10.certainly think there will be, as range of ability in this race. In
:11:11. > :11:15.the first couple of laps, you need to make sure you stay out of any
:11:16. > :11:20.problems on a day like this. With this mixed competition, with a lot
:11:21. > :11:26.of riders, it is reasonable to say, who are not used to this kind of
:11:27. > :11:29.competition. Often they experienced professional riders will write had
:11:30. > :11:40.all the way through the first couple of laps to whittle down the field.
:11:41. > :11:43.Pete is making an early lead on the first lap. Conditions today are
:11:44. > :11:53.similar to when Chris Boardman checked at the course only 24 hours
:11:54. > :11:56.ago. We are on the edge of the Trossachs National Park, surrounded
:11:57. > :12:00.by beautiful countryside and challenging climbs, but for some
:12:01. > :12:04.reason, the course designers have chosen to keep the entire circuit
:12:05. > :12:07.within the city boundaries. It is a street circuit really enough to find
:12:08. > :12:11.a worthy Commonwealth Games champion? I am going to look at the
:12:12. > :12:25.course to find out. All I need is a swift steeds to carry me around.
:12:26. > :12:30.There is no distinct hill to speak of on the circuit. It will be
:12:31. > :12:37.completed 12 times by the men, and seven times by the women, to make a
:12:38. > :12:42.total race difference of 158 kilometres and 198 metres
:12:43. > :12:43.respectively. That does not mean there is not any climbing. It is all
:12:44. > :12:53.hidden in plain view. It is spread evenly over the 14
:12:54. > :13:06.kilometres circuit as six small inclines, none of them more than a
:13:07. > :13:10.few hundred metres long. But it could kill all of the riders' speed.
:13:11. > :13:16.Being near the front will be absolutely critical. During the
:13:17. > :13:24.men's race, they will tackle 84 of these, with 609 feet of climbing
:13:25. > :13:26.every lap, so nobody is going to be able to sit in and wait for the
:13:27. > :13:39.sprint. As if that was not enough to deal
:13:40. > :13:43.with, I have counted 38 distinct corners they will have to negotiate
:13:44. > :13:50.on each and every lap, and one of them are more important than this
:13:51. > :13:53.one. This is Rottenrow. It is an easy left-hand turn, but it takes
:13:54. > :13:58.them onto a steep and cobbled stiff scent. It might only be a short
:13:59. > :14:03.section of road, but the smooth slippery cobbles have got the
:14:04. > :14:10.organisers so worried, they have covered the majority of them up with
:14:11. > :14:13.a gripping surface. Then there is a dogleg onto a wide road which will
:14:14. > :14:18.take them down to the park. In normal conditions, a corner like
:14:19. > :14:22.this would not give them too many difficulties. In normal conditions.
:14:23. > :14:26.That is because the cobbles and the paved sections of the course, like
:14:27. > :14:30.Buchanan Street, normally pedestrianised, are incredibly
:14:31. > :14:35.slippery when wet, as you might have noticed by the full waterproof
:14:36. > :14:49.clothes. Rain is forecast for the event itself.
:14:50. > :14:52.parks, the athletes will have a sudden bottleneck. Those too far
:14:53. > :14:57.back will be forced to break sharply and they will have two sprints to
:14:58. > :15:03.catch up, you can only do that so many times. Staying in the top 20 or
:15:04. > :15:07.30 will be critical. This circuit around the iconic Glasgow streets is
:15:08. > :15:11.absolutely magnificent, it has got everything you could possibly want
:15:12. > :15:16.in a championship circuit. To win here, you are not only going to have
:15:17. > :15:23.to be physically strong but technically skilled and tactically
:15:24. > :15:31.very astute. I think we should ride the race on these bikes.
:15:32. > :15:41.Just as Chris rode on his own in the rain yesterday, this is the very
:15:42. > :15:45.first lap of the race, attacking with 166 kilometres to go and he is
:15:46. > :15:49.still out in front. He is on Woodlands Road at the moment which
:15:50. > :15:56.means he is 7.5 kilometres into the first lap. Each lap is 14 kilometres
:15:57. > :16:00.in distance and he will pretty soon almost doubled back on himself and
:16:01. > :16:07.start the short climb around Park Quadrant, Park Circus. We are still
:16:08. > :16:11.in the West End, the outskirts of Kelvingrove Park. Here he is,
:16:12. > :16:13.switching back. Time to look around over his shoulder and
:16:14. > :16:17.switching back. Time to look around over his shoulder the cancer as to
:16:18. > :16:20.who is there is nobody at all. This is an interesting tactic when you
:16:21. > :16:24.consider there are so many other riders in the race. --
:16:25. > :16:29.consider there are so many other are still feeling fresh. Whether or
:16:30. > :16:35.not they were going to be a factor or not. This is exceptionally
:16:36. > :16:39.unexpected, it is safe to say he is going faster than me on his lap but
:16:40. > :16:44.he has a long way to go. I have never seen anything like this, he is
:16:45. > :16:49.working very hard for that 20 seconds. There are lots of fresh
:16:50. > :16:52.legs, even if they are not attacking, just staying at the
:16:53. > :16:58.front. Big energy expenditure from one of the favourites. A very
:16:59. > :17:04.businesslike look on his face. He has been in great form
:17:05. > :17:08.businesslike look on his face. He this race. He was beaten by Tom
:17:09. > :17:17.Scully for the gold medal. He was left off the Sky roster for the Tour
:17:18. > :17:27.de France. The British road race champion. The rider from Guernsey is
:17:28. > :17:31.on the front of the chasing group. It is already starting to split up a
:17:32. > :17:32.bit. In the early stages of the race. It does
:17:33. > :17:39.bit. In the early stages of the somebody to lose a wheel, we have
:17:40. > :17:46.already seen crashes over the course of this competition, some of the
:17:47. > :17:48.backmarkers as well. Pete Kennaugh with chance to pick his line across
:17:49. > :18:02.the City streets. Now coming into Sauchiehall Street
:18:03. > :18:08.for the first time as he heads back into the middle of town. He is
:18:09. > :18:12.feeling his way around the bends. It looks very slow to us but they have
:18:13. > :18:18.25 square millimetres of rubber in contact with the ground. They will
:18:19. > :18:27.be in travelling axe base excess -- in excess of 70 kilometres per hour
:18:28. > :18:32.on these roads at some points. The race is just breaking apart. It is
:18:33. > :18:36.due to the shape of the course itself. There has been no settling
:18:37. > :18:47.in period at the start of the race, this is the first of 12 laps. I
:18:48. > :18:51.would be interested to hear a tactical explanation here from Pete
:18:52. > :18:55.Kennaugh. He took everybody by surprise. Not least us in the
:18:56. > :18:57.commentary box. James McLaughlin from Guernsey on the front of the
:18:58. > :19:01.first chasing group, and also from Guernsey on the front of the
:19:02. > :19:07.another Guernsey rider, Michael from Guernsey on the front of the
:19:08. > :19:19.Serafin, towards the front. We are back with the leader.
:19:20. > :19:36.A lot of the riders would have already mentally gone off today,
:19:37. > :19:41.imagine facing four hours in these conditions, it is a very difficult
:19:42. > :19:42.day of riding. But it is a fantastic course. It
:19:43. > :19:48.day of riding. But it is a fantastic animates the race. If you were up
:19:49. > :19:52.for it, and you might be in these conditions, it is not a bad thing
:19:53. > :19:58.because you know that already you are breaking down the field before
:19:59. > :20:06.you start to a certain extent. I have been in these situations. I
:20:07. > :20:09.have been sat at the start line and watching the first spots of rain
:20:10. > :20:15.starting and I am already mentally going home. As soon as that doubt
:20:16. > :20:20.seeps in, you are already out. There is quite a few of those in here
:20:21. > :20:24.today. Heading down towards Nelson Mandela Place for the first time.
:20:25. > :20:30.They are through that now. They will cut across the shopping street,
:20:31. > :20:39.Buchanan Street. And along George Street, George Square on the right
:20:40. > :20:45.hand side. Just where the flags are in your picture. You can see the gap
:20:46. > :20:50.that Pete Kennaugh has. The gap looks to be slightly less than 30
:20:51. > :20:54.seconds to me. Montrose Street, a real sting in the tail for the
:20:55. > :20:58.riders over the last couple of laps in the women's race. Short and sharp
:20:59. > :21:05.and not terribly friendly. At least it does not last long. About 15
:21:06. > :21:10.seconds of riding. You it does not last long. About 15
:21:11. > :21:14.as we get to the top how steep it is. It takes its toll when you have
:21:15. > :21:20.been up a dozen times. A bright start for Pete Kennaugh of the Isle
:21:21. > :21:23.of Man, and the main man was expected to be Mark Cavendish but
:21:24. > :21:28.his crash at stage one of the Tour de France means that he is unable to
:21:29. > :21:32.take his place here. Jill Douglas caught up with him earlier today.
:21:33. > :21:35.The last time we saw you caught up with him earlier today.
:21:36. > :21:36.going into an ambulance in Harrogate. Where are you with the
:21:37. > :21:45.injury? IMO K. I was Harrogate. Where are you with the
:21:46. > :21:51.completely for ten days. I was back training pretty quickly. I am not
:21:52. > :21:54.going to keep the condition. I have always done the tour at this point
:21:55. > :22:04.so I do not know what my condition will be like. I have been training
:22:05. > :22:15.hard this week. I can ride my bike no problem. I will see what happens
:22:16. > :22:23.now. Disappointing not to see you racing here. What are your thoughts
:22:24. > :22:28.ahead of the race? Strong nations, but collectively not a strong
:22:29. > :22:32.peloton. The teams are going to be quite bullish about it, particularly
:22:33. > :22:36.the Kiwis and Aussies, they have strong guys but do not underestimate
:22:37. > :22:42.the home nations, we have lots of good domestic riders right now and
:22:43. > :22:47.the Isle of Man has a strong guy. That is going to be our advantage,
:22:48. > :22:50.being the underdogs. It will make for interesting racing. You will
:22:51. > :22:55.have teams marking each other out like there was in Delhi. When you
:22:56. > :23:01.get strong numbers in those smaller teams, you know, they can spring a
:23:02. > :23:05.surprise. How do you rate the chances of Pete Kennaugh? You are
:23:06. > :23:11.going to be in the team car. We have more than just Pete. Andrew is not
:23:12. > :23:16.going to win but he will do a good job. We talked about tactics last
:23:17. > :23:20.night, and what I think is going to happen, I think it will either go
:23:21. > :23:25.one way or the other, it will be like the nationals last year, where
:23:26. > :23:30.we got it cleared from the beginning. Otherwise it is going to
:23:31. > :23:39.be controlled and the weather could play a part. It will be difficult to
:23:40. > :23:45.ride this course in the wet. I am confident that as a team, the Isle
:23:46. > :23:50.of Man cannot go into it just to compete, we have to try to win. I am
:23:51. > :23:56.confident. I am still waiting for it. That is why I am proud to be
:23:57. > :24:04.representing the Isle of Man right now. I hope the lads and the girls
:24:05. > :24:10.do well, we have been going away since we were 12 years old to go
:24:11. > :24:17.racing. The likes of Pete have been doing that, and others, just to
:24:18. > :24:21.compete against world tour riders and ultimately possibly be
:24:22. > :24:25.successful, that is a nice thing. Thank you very much. Great to hear
:24:26. > :24:29.from Mark Cavendish, but it is Thank you very much. Great to hear
:24:30. > :24:33.great shame that he is not out on the roads this afternoon. Of course
:24:34. > :24:38.he won on this circuit, the national championship last year. He gave some
:24:39. > :24:44.hints that this is perhaps not spontaneous, it is the look of a
:24:45. > :24:51.planned tactic, albeit a surprisingly one. There were some
:24:52. > :24:54.pauses in the discussion between Mark and GL intimating that this
:24:55. > :24:58.could go from the gun and he did not want to be caught in the position of
:24:59. > :25:05.having to defend and do all of the chasing. -- Jill. He is certainly
:25:06. > :25:09.not doing the chasing now, that's for sure. David Miller in the blue
:25:10. > :25:20.of Scotland, at the front of the chase. A kilometre or two earlier,
:25:21. > :25:26.getting across, that would have been interesting, a long breakaway. David
:25:27. > :25:31.Millar wants to get stuck in. I do not think we will
:25:32. > :25:36.Millar wants to get stuck in. I do on the climbs necessarily. Mark
:25:37. > :25:40.Cavendish said he felt some of the teams would be bullish and none has
:25:41. > :25:45.been more bullish than the Isle of Man and Pete Kennaugh in the first
:25:46. > :25:53.lap. Here he comes, four seasons in one day here in Glasgow. Four
:25:54. > :25:57.seasons in one lap, I think! Big grin from Pete Kennaugh, mixing it
:25:58. > :26:10.up at the start of the race, nobody was expecting this. Just over 20
:26:11. > :26:16.minutes for the first lap. 11 to go. There has been a lot of sorting out
:26:17. > :26:21.behind him. Pete Kennaugh, if he was to win today, and he is one of the
:26:22. > :26:25.favourites for the race, it would only be the third gold medal ever
:26:26. > :26:29.won in cycling by the Isle of Man, Peter Buckley winning the road race
:26:30. > :26:35.in 1966, and Mark Cavendish eight years ago. It has put the
:26:36. > :26:39.Australians on the back foot, it is down to them to do the chasing now.
:26:40. > :26:45.The gap is showing at around 30 seconds. Exactly 30 seconds. All of
:26:46. > :26:48.the Australians at the front are sensing the danger, there might be a
:26:49. > :26:51.long way to go but they will have to take this one seriously. The
:26:52. > :26:55.Australians talking take this one seriously. The
:26:56. > :26:56.race at the media conference, they said it would be a sprint because
:26:57. > :27:01.race at the media conference, they they will make sure it is a sprint.
:27:02. > :27:01.Plenty of other riders will try to make sure
:27:02. > :27:04.Plenty of other riders will try to different scenario and if it is
:27:05. > :27:07.Plenty of other riders will try to sprint, the likelihood is that it
:27:08. > :27:15.will be from a small group of maybe half a dozen. Absolutely. It is
:27:16. > :27:23.unusual for them to state their tactics so openly to the press. Mark
:27:24. > :27:30.Renshaw is a great lead out man for Mark Cavendish. He is not really a
:27:31. > :27:34.winner in his own right. It has been a year since he has had a win but he
:27:35. > :27:40.has always been there or thereabouts. We are talking about
:27:41. > :27:44.him all the way through his races. Caleb Ewan as well. A massively
:27:45. > :27:50.talented 20-year-old. If he can hang in towards the end, he has got a
:27:51. > :27:59.quick finish. It is a strong team, as ever. Let's hope this improvement
:28:00. > :28:10.in the weather stays for what is left of the race. As you can see,
:28:11. > :28:15.the field is splitting up markedly. Is that Ian Stannard out of the race
:28:16. > :28:21.already? It certainly looks that way to me. His season has been utterly
:28:22. > :28:30.ruined by the crash when he broke a better brain his back. -- vertebra
:28:31. > :28:33.in his back. You would think these conditions would suit Stannard,
:28:34. > :28:36.in his back. You would think these worse the weather, the better he
:28:37. > :28:41.goes, but he has quickly been knocked out of the running in terms
:28:42. > :28:50.of being able to assist in any way. The gap remains at 30 seconds. That
:28:51. > :28:53.is not big enough, couple of strong attacks and it could quickly be
:28:54. > :29:02.swamped, that kind of margin. He needs to push out a little bit. He
:29:03. > :29:08.desperately needs company. 160 odd kilometres on your own is simply too
:29:09. > :29:22.far in my opinion. Making the left-hand turn from Buchanan Street.
:29:23. > :29:24.Those who have positioned themselves in the
:29:25. > :29:27.Those who have positioned themselves in right spot near the barriers
:29:28. > :29:32.round here can see the riders twice on each lap, they can move a few
:29:33. > :29:41.yards up the road to see them coming back down notes on Mandela Place, a
:29:42. > :29:42.little bit later on in the lap. -- back down towards Nelson Mandela
:29:43. > :29:55.Place. Steve Cummings is up towards the
:29:56. > :30:03.front for England. Steve Cummings is a strong rider as well. He would do
:30:04. > :30:12.well in a breakaway situation. I am not sure that Peter Kennaugh can
:30:13. > :30:15.stretched his lead. You can see by his face that he is working strongly
:30:16. > :30:17.but he has not gone all in and he knows there is a long
:30:18. > :30:21.his face that he is working strongly but he has not gone all in way to
:30:22. > :30:24.go. We said from the start that this is an interesting tactic, very rare
:30:25. > :30:30.from somebody of his calibre, but clearly he knows what he's doing and
:30:31. > :30:39.he is to this move. -- he is commented to this move.
:30:40. > :30:51.The sun is shining down on the wet roads here. Just look at the size of
:30:52. > :30:59.that group now. We have got 30, 40 riders, absolute tops, still in
:31:00. > :31:06.contention here. It did not take long at all to get rid of almost 100
:31:07. > :31:10.riders from this field. He has stretched out his gap a little
:31:11. > :31:15.further now, 40 seconds. The interesting thing about these
:31:16. > :31:18.multisport games, particularly the Commonwealth Games, and why I
:31:19. > :31:22.enjoyed watching it more than any of the race, is that it tends to be
:31:23. > :31:29.more of a race of individuals. You do not have a strong team to control
:31:30. > :31:31.the race and dictate the terms. It is about the individuals who have
:31:32. > :31:39.the courage to go out and attack and make it happen. We saw that
:31:40. > :31:39.the courage to go out and attack and Delhi, a marvellous race. Peter
:31:40. > :31:44.Kennaugh it is still Delhi, a marvellous race. Peter
:31:45. > :31:48.the riders drop off. This is Mackenzie Smith of the Cayman
:31:49. > :31:50.Islands. He has decided that one lap was enough of this road race, giving
:31:51. > :32:23.the searing pace at the start. Into the park they go,
:32:24. > :32:28.again heads out to the West End for the second time. Very tough to get
:32:29. > :32:29.the second time. Very tough to anywhere near this section when we
:32:30. > :32:35.were trying to do a recce anywhere near this section when we
:32:36. > :32:41.of days ago with the lawn bowls anywhere near this section when we
:32:42. > :32:44.have a loan breakaway. There are 38 bends in every lap Tom and this is
:32:45. > :32:51.the place you want to do it. Get a bends in every lap Tom and this is
:32:52. > :33:10.behind. An interesting tactic, but a great place to do it.
:33:11. > :33:21.Over the river and into University Avenue for the leader. This looks
:33:22. > :33:24.like Luke Rowe, leading the chase. They have decided that it might not
:33:25. > :33:27.be the normal pattern of things but somebody has to kick-start this
:33:28. > :33:37.race. Riders are dropping out all the time here.
:33:38. > :33:48.The field is rapidly being whistled down here. Back at the front of the
:33:49. > :33:58.race. Nobody coming across to join Peter Kennaugh after his earlier
:33:59. > :34:04.attack. Plenty of time to respond. Many kilometres left to race yet. Is
:34:05. > :34:10.almost at the furthest point from Glasgow Green now. The furthest
:34:11. > :34:12.point West. He is about 5.5 kilometres into the lap and now is
:34:13. > :34:30.going to turn right into Byres Road. It is easy to for get when we are
:34:31. > :34:38.watching this action that it is tough. We still have 3.5 hours of
:34:39. > :34:43.racing left. It is a long way to that finish line, and that is the
:34:44. > :34:46.only point when it matters if you are in the lead. This
:34:47. > :34:58.quite interesting. It is well represented. Tuft is in there. A
:34:59. > :35:05.strong man in the trying trial -- in the time trial. A nice bit of
:35:06. > :35:14.daylight here. Northern Ireland represented as well. Tuft is the
:35:15. > :35:18.rider in the middle and he finished just outside the medals in the time
:35:19. > :35:22.trial the other day. And now I'm great George Street. Getting some
:35:23. > :35:27.company would suit Peter Kennaugh at the front. Some quality riders, they
:35:28. > :35:48.would be very useful. Those three are still holding their
:35:49. > :35:52.lead here. The camera angle is foreshortening the view at it. The
:35:53. > :35:58.camera motorbike is almost part of the team there. Let's get a close-up
:35:59. > :36:03.of these riders as go through, Tuft leading the way. Peter Hawkins of
:36:04. > :36:13.Northern Ireland is in there, and Nathan Haas as well, for Australia.
:36:14. > :36:22.It looks like Australia are playing a more traditional tactical plan
:36:23. > :36:26.here. They are using up their lesser riders first to do all of the
:36:27. > :36:28.chasing in the early race and saving the names for the last few
:36:29. > :36:41.kilometres. I really like turning it on its
:36:42. > :36:45.head, this approach that Peter Kennaugh has taken. I'm sure he will
:36:46. > :36:47.be able to talk us through it after the race and what the thinking was,
:36:48. > :36:55.because it did look like a preplanned move, very unusual.
:36:56. > :37:10.Here is Tuft from Canada. He finished both the Giro d'Italia and
:37:11. > :37:14.the Tour de France. A really old school tough professional at 37
:37:15. > :37:17.years old. Is no stranger to the rain, coming out of that Tour de
:37:18. > :37:22.France. We saw more of that in the month of July than we have for many
:37:23. > :37:25.years. Peter Hawkins just for a moment is slightly off the back of
:37:26. > :37:31.that little group, hanging onto the back wheel of Nathan Haas. Nathan
:37:32. > :37:36.Haas was second in the Tour of Britain a couple of years ago. And
:37:37. > :37:42.further up the load Road, our leader. It was almost as if he was
:37:43. > :37:44.shot from a gun at the start of the race. He just disappeared as soon as
:37:45. > :38:00.we got underway. Into Park Circus with the leader
:38:01. > :38:04.from the Isle of Man. The three are just closing down there, we can see
:38:05. > :38:08.them on the bottom left of the screen approaching the same corner.
:38:09. > :38:14.They are slowly making inroads into Peter Kennaugh's lead. 23 seconds
:38:15. > :38:21.now. Within the next few kilometres, we should see them join up, and that
:38:22. > :38:27.will be a very interesting group. Tuft is very good at the sustained
:38:28. > :38:32.efforts, fourth in the time trial a few days ago. Hawkins has got
:38:33. > :38:44.himself in good company year. He is in that little chasing group
:38:45. > :38:54.of three as the peloton goes through Park Circus. There is Hawkins. Fifth
:38:55. > :38:59.on a stage of the Tour of Britain in 2012. He is involved at the front of
:39:00. > :39:05.the racier, with just one rider further up the road. He didn't show
:39:06. > :39:12.up on the camera, but descending on paving stones, very smooth and
:39:13. > :39:15.slippery. They have just got to hold off the brakes long enough. It takes
:39:16. > :39:21.a lot of skill to ride around the circuit in these conditions. Here is
:39:22. > :39:26.the front of the main peloton, with New Zealand very well represented.
:39:27. > :39:39.40 seconds is the gap from the main field to Peter Kennaugh, so not much
:39:40. > :39:56.has changed. There has been a five second clawing back.
:39:57. > :40:02.He is starting to get a feel for this circuit now, he knows where the
:40:03. > :40:09.smooth sections are, where the grids are to be avoided. A short climb
:40:10. > :40:10.into Blythswood Square now before the left-hand turn and the straight
:40:11. > :40:16.fast run downhill the left-hand turn and the straight
:40:17. > :40:23.Mandela Place. Here is our chasing group of three.
:40:24. > :40:32.They are just turning off Souchiehall Street into Blythswood
:40:33. > :40:37.Street. But it is idea of gap between them.
:40:38. > :40:48.Here is Peter Kennaugh now. Really big crowds in the city centre, and
:40:49. > :40:51.they will be growing all the time as the race goes on. Cutting across
:40:52. > :41:06.Buchanan Street now. At long George Street. George Square
:41:07. > :41:11.will be on his right hand side shortly, a real focal point for the
:41:12. > :41:18.Commonwealth Games. We have seen many people having their photograph
:41:19. > :41:21.taken now. We have already have seven riders climbed off in this
:41:22. > :41:22.race, and I think that list will grow quickly in the course of the
:41:23. > :41:34.next lap. 133 left in the race so far. All of
:41:35. > :41:44.them are chasing Peter Kennaugh from the Isle of Man. The crowds here, no
:41:45. > :41:47.problem with the weather, five deep in some places on this circuit. One
:41:48. > :41:52.of the duties of having a street circuit is that it is easy for
:41:53. > :41:55.people to watch. Personally, I did it is a real triumph, what they have
:41:56. > :41:58.achieved here. They could have gone out into the Trossachs National
:41:59. > :42:03.Park, but instead they kept it all within the city of Glasgow and it
:42:04. > :42:06.has certainly got its own challenges, as we can fear. It is a
:42:07. > :42:08.tried and tested route, after they challenges, as we can fear. It is a
:42:09. > :42:12.held the national championships here last year. It was a bold move to do
:42:13. > :42:15.some thing like that last year. It was a bold move to do
:42:16. > :42:25.so many options, and I think it is paying off handsomely. This gives
:42:26. > :42:30.you a nice indication of how thoroughly unpleasant these few
:42:31. > :42:36.hundred yards off the course are. Cumulatively more and more
:42:37. > :42:42.difficult. Hawkins is on the front, with Nathan Haas right beside him.
:42:43. > :43:03.And others here on Montrose Street.
:43:04. > :43:06.And tough climb for Loto Petrus, the
:43:07. > :43:13.And Namibian on the back. A series of
:43:14. > :43:20.intervals there, interval training. Roger Aiken from Northern Ireland is
:43:21. > :43:24.just in front of the Namibian. Taking it nice and steady, and there
:43:25. > :43:30.is a bit of covering their on the street to help the riders.
:43:31. > :43:36.We are seeing some attacks starting to come now, and the team car is
:43:37. > :43:44.trying to get through. Almost getting involved in the action.
:43:45. > :43:48.Almost no straight roads to have an attached, really. They are having to
:43:49. > :43:52.jump as best as they can between corners, and you can see why it is
:43:53. > :43:54.so important to stay in the first 30 riders. You can see the action
:43:55. > :43:57.happening, but just cannot get involved with it if you are not
:43:58. > :44:08.within that first 30. They are not far behind now, so this
:44:09. > :44:18.race is still wide open. There is such a long way to go. This is just
:44:19. > :44:22.the second lap of 12. Canada have clearly decided that they are going
:44:23. > :44:33.to have attacking grace from the get go. 43 seconds is the size of the
:44:34. > :44:37.gap to the chase group. Remi Pelletier was very active on the
:44:38. > :44:40.track, he won the bronze medal in the scratch race, a race that was
:44:41. > :44:46.won by Shane Archibold of New Zealand. He has used his power on
:44:47. > :44:50.the track to get a very handsome gap there in a short space of time. E
:44:51. > :45:00.has worked hard for the team pursuit, a four minute effort. In
:45:01. > :45:06.the latter stages now of the second lap. Pele.
:45:07. > :45:14.He is behind the leader, Pete Kennaugh. That would be a strong
:45:15. > :45:19.grouping at the front if the Canadians suddenly had two in the
:45:20. > :45:24.lead group. The time gap has stayed roughly the same, everybody is
:45:25. > :45:27.riding pretty much at the same speed around the circuit and it cannot
:45:28. > :45:32.vary much because there is a terminal velocity to get around the
:45:33. > :45:39.bend is safely. There are so many corners, and in these wet conditions
:45:40. > :45:47.they restrict the maximum speed. Pete Kennaugh may be expending
:45:48. > :45:57.energy. But not much more than would normally be the case because of the
:45:58. > :46:01.nature of the course. A safe, smooth ride as well, he can dictate his own
:46:02. > :46:10.pace, he does not have too braked too hard. He can dictate his own
:46:11. > :46:18.line. Not having to work too hard. I was talking to the England team
:46:19. > :46:23.manager Chris Newton. Lizzie Armitstead was asking the motorbikes
:46:24. > :46:29.for some information on various routes. We have not had any time
:46:30. > :46:33.checks in the past few routes. We have not had any time
:46:34. > :46:37.thankfully the system has come to life. As they come towards the end
:46:38. > :46:44.of the second lap, here is Pete Kennaugh. Turning right into the
:46:45. > :46:51.finishing straight. In the sunshine 20 minutes ago, but it has changed
:46:52. > :46:59.somewhat. Some more specks of rain at the moment. He has been out in
:47:00. > :47:06.front pretty much since the race started, 168 kilometres is the
:47:07. > :47:13.distance, 28 covered. Like the previous lap, he has chosen this as
:47:14. > :47:23.the place to feed. You need to stay on top. He will be burning 1300
:47:24. > :47:24.calories per hour. The moment you start to feel hungry it is
:47:25. > :47:44.effectively over. It does not look like Pete Kennaugh
:47:45. > :47:58.well have any company any time soon. The breakaway has been overhauled.
:47:59. > :48:03.Second over the line is Pelletier. The three who were chasing have been
:48:04. > :48:06.brought back in. Pelletier is now second. It seemed at that he was
:48:07. > :48:12.hurtling down the road with his team-mate just ahead of him. They're
:48:13. > :48:18.rather remnants of the peloton coming through, and my goodness me,
:48:19. > :48:23.it has been whittled down quickly. 14 riders left chasing Pete Kennaugh
:48:24. > :48:25.now in the main group. It is reasonable to say that that is the
:48:26. > :48:31.only group that will be contesting things. David Millar is still in
:48:32. > :48:37.there. Geraint Thomas is in the group but we have not seen him. He
:48:38. > :48:38.is out of vision at the moment. Pete Kennaugh is now heading into Argyle
:48:39. > :48:46.Street. Here is Pelletier. Mark Renshaw is in the group as well. One
:48:47. > :48:52.of the danger men for the day, Renshaw is in the group as well. One
:48:53. > :48:58.comes down to a sprint finish. All of the favourites in fact are still
:48:59. > :49:03.tucked away in there. And we probably won't see them through an
:49:04. > :49:09.hour or so. The mistaken or beard at Dan Craven of Namibia in the back of
:49:10. > :49:13.the group, just going round, at the back of the peloton as they went
:49:14. > :49:18.over the line. Australia have decided that it is their
:49:19. > :49:23.responsibility to do the chasing. They have been forced to use up some
:49:24. > :49:29.firepower, just to regulate the race. Quite a high prices being paid
:49:30. > :49:32.to put them under pressure, though. Pete Kennaugh is
:49:33. > :49:48.to put them under pressure, though. amount of energy to stay up there.
:49:49. > :49:56.Roe Is also policing the front of the peloton. Here is the leader.
:49:57. > :50:03.There is no leeway. He has been as high as 45 seconds ahead. It settles
:50:04. > :50:06.down the race. It blew it apart on the first lap, unexpectedly, but now
:50:07. > :50:10.it has settled into a rhythm and nothing has changed for a while. It
:50:11. > :50:17.is as if they know that he is within range and they are happy to keep in
:50:18. > :50:27.there. A flurry of attacks behind. Still filtering over the line at the
:50:28. > :50:46.end of the second lap. It looks like the Canadians have got this group
:50:47. > :50:50.surrounded. Roche From the Isle of Man is also there. He has ridden in
:50:51. > :51:02.every single Commonwealth Games raced since 1990. -- race since
:51:03. > :51:08.1990. Pete Kennaugh does not seem to mind as he goes along St Vincent
:51:09. > :51:14.Street. Well, checking behind all the time now. This is an interesting
:51:15. > :51:21.sign. I don't know whether he is waiting for company and whether he
:51:22. > :51:26.should start to let it go now. Pelletier looks willing but he does
:51:27. > :51:31.not appear to be closing the gap. He rode in the individual and team the
:51:32. > :51:40.shoot, finishing ninth. He did really well to snatch a medal in the
:51:41. > :51:46.scratch race. Geraint Thomas, there. Having a little chat. Thomas rode
:51:47. > :51:53.well, in the time trial, getting a bronze medal. He was not far away. A
:51:54. > :51:57.very strong performance. For a long time I thought he would pull off the

:19:40. > :19:46.the fourth lap out of 12 and there is the leader, Pete Kennaugh of the
:19:47. > :19:50.Isle of Man, still out in front and riding through the West End, just
:19:51. > :19:57.across the way from Kelvingrove Park, through Park Circus. And his
:19:58. > :20:03.lead is around a minute and a half. One minute, 33. That is the new
:20:04. > :20:07.confirmed lead. He is eking out two or three seconds a lap at the
:20:08. > :20:11.moment. Still a lot of racing for him to do. Two and a half hours on
:20:12. > :20:15.the road before he gets to the finish line for the last
:20:16. > :20:18.the road before he gets to the Desperately sad for the Australians
:20:19. > :20:22.that they lost Rohan Dennis, he was doing all of the pacemaking. The
:20:23. > :20:29.Australians had a think about it and have regrouped, putting Michael
:20:30. > :20:36.Hepburn on the front. Michael Hepburn Road in the time trial early
:20:37. > :20:41.in the week, he is in sixth place. The national time trial champion of
:20:42. > :20:45.Australia. Now taking control of the front of the peloton for a while.
:20:46. > :20:53.The home Nations favourites are near the front. Dowsett is back there.
:20:54. > :20:58.Sam Harrison is in second place for Wales. Wales have been very
:20:59. > :21:04.attentive, they have had their entire team in the top 20 for all of
:21:05. > :21:08.the last two laps. Not a big group now, only around 38 riders left.
:21:09. > :21:16.the last two laps. Not a big group the head of affairs. James McCallum
:21:17. > :21:21.and David Millar for Scotland. David Millar is half a dozen back in blue.
:21:22. > :21:25.Jack Bauer is close by as well. He was so close to a stage win in the
:21:26. > :21:31.Tour de France, having been in a lone breakaway. Talking about loan
:21:32. > :21:37.breakaways, Peter Kennaugh, 168 kilometres, Jack Bauer had been away
:21:38. > :21:43.for 220 kilometres with one other rider and he got to within 40 metres
:21:44. > :21:47.of the line or something like that. It was desperately sad and they both
:21:48. > :21:50.knew, human nature took over, they knew that if they stopped and looked
:21:51. > :21:56.at each other they would lose the race, and if they did not come one
:21:57. > :22:00.of them was going to lose, and the pores cost them. You always like to
:22:01. > :22:04.see people making it but that is what makes it spectacular viewing.
:22:05. > :22:09.Jack Bauer afterwards was heartbroken. It was a heartbreaking
:22:10. > :22:21.moment but eight stupendous by grace. -- a stupendous bicycle race.
:22:22. > :22:26.As they had down, Pete Kennaugh of the Isle of Man leads the way,
:22:27. > :22:31.coming into Nelson Mandela Place. As he cuts across Buchanan Street and
:22:32. > :22:35.into George Street again. The left-hand turn and the climate of
:22:36. > :22:41.Montrose Street is looming on the horizon for him once more. He must
:22:42. > :22:48.be getting thoroughly sick of that small climb, it is getting steeper
:22:49. > :22:52.and steep every time does it. Every time he swings around. He is making
:22:53. > :22:56.short work of it. The news is that this is only lap four out of 12 and
:22:57. > :23:02.he will become familiar with it as afternoon wears on. More action
:23:03. > :23:06.behind. He is trying to force his way back in. Scott Davies is trying
:23:07. > :23:10.to get back onto the back of the peloton having crashed earlier. He
:23:11. > :23:14.is time trialling his peloton having crashed earlier. He
:23:15. > :23:22.the head of the peloton. It has taken him a long time to get back.
:23:23. > :23:29.Scraping another seven seconds. He is now one minute 40 ahead. He has
:23:30. > :23:32.found his rhythm again. He has exchanged words with Mark
:23:33. > :23:41.Cavendish. He looks to be on top of his game now. Dancing up the 20%
:23:42. > :23:45.gradient climb. Look at the scene in the background, that shows you how
:23:46. > :23:48.high the climb is. Montrose Street is under his wheels again and he
:23:49. > :23:57.will not have to do that for another 20 minutes or so. He took it very
:23:58. > :24:00.much in his stride. We have reiterated this already a couple of
:24:01. > :24:08.times but it bears mentioning again, six climbs of similar fashion on
:24:09. > :24:16.this circuit. By the time they get to the finish, there will be 7200
:24:17. > :24:20.feet of climbing. So it looks like a standard circuit but it has all of
:24:21. > :24:27.the makings of a major race. Just packaged in a different way. Hepburn
:24:28. > :24:32.is now doing the job of Rohan Dennis until he crashed out early in the
:24:33. > :24:44.lap. He looks comfortable enough. Harrison is still third in line.
:24:45. > :25:00.Past George Square and now heading for Montrose Street once again.
:25:01. > :25:10.And now the road just kicks up. The real benefit here to being in the
:25:11. > :25:14.first part of the peloton going around the corner is that you can
:25:15. > :25:20.see them gliding round, just feathering the brakes, but further
:25:21. > :25:21.towards the back they have to almost stopped. David
:25:22. > :25:30.towards the back they have to almost fifth in the peloton in the White
:25:31. > :25:35.helmets. Up towards the front, he has been, throughout the day. He is
:25:36. > :25:43.seventh in line at the moment, David Millar. You would think it was a
:25:44. > :25:43.sunny day from that shot, wouldn't you? Incredibly it actually looks
:25:44. > :25:58.quite summary. -- summery. you? Incredibly it actually looks
:25:59. > :26:04.on, as you? Incredibly it actually looks
:26:05. > :26:15.race. London Road. This is a problem for Geraint Thomas! Well, he has
:26:16. > :26:19.just got his wheel changed. It is a very slow change, I have to say. I
:26:20. > :26:21.do not know who this mechanic is, but that is really costing him, and
:26:22. > :26:31.that is a big chase to get back on. but that is really costing him, and
:26:32. > :26:37.designated leader, will they come back to help him out? We will wait
:26:38. > :26:41.and see. He is nearly out of the team cars, so now he will have to
:26:42. > :26:46.come up with a stiff chase. This is a long chase for Geraint Thomas.
:26:47. > :26:48.come up with a stiff chase. This is is such a shame because he was
:26:49. > :26:51.staying in the top 20 or 30 is such a shame because he was
:26:52. > :26:54.whole time but he has been almost invisible
:26:55. > :26:59.whole time but he has been almost from a ride of his calibre so early
:27:00. > :27:03.in the race. We know that his form is good after the fantastic time
:27:04. > :27:10.trial and he rode beautifully in the Tour de France. -- rider of his
:27:11. > :27:12.calibre. He has signed a new deal with Sky. He looks more than capable
:27:13. > :27:15.given the opportunity of a top ten with Sky. He looks more than capable
:27:16. > :27:18.given the opportunity of ride in the Tour de France in future but who
:27:19. > :27:23.knows what he's capable of? He spends most of his time riding for
:27:24. > :27:28.the people in those events. He is an immensely talented cyclist
:27:29. > :27:35.nonetheless. Here is the leader, Peter Kennaugh. Mixed feelings, I am
:27:36. > :27:41.sure he had mixed feelings about his track silver medal. He is a winner,
:27:42. > :27:48.isn't he? Winners are seldom happy with Silvers. They do not see it as
:27:49. > :27:55.winning the silver, they see it as losing the gold medal. Eight of
:27:56. > :28:01.competition between the Isle of Man and New Zealand in that race. -- it
:28:02. > :28:07.was a tough competition. It makes it look as if he is out for a Sunday
:28:08. > :28:14.stroll but he is averaging more than 25 mph, despite all of the twist and
:28:15. > :28:22.turns in the climbs. A consistent 25 mph. He is being cheered on by the
:28:23. > :28:25.crowd. This is where we will get the true indication of how his lead is
:28:26. > :28:38.faring over the last 20 minutes or so. Well over a third of the way
:28:39. > :28:46.into his day now. 56 kilometres completed as he crosses the line.
:28:47. > :28:50.One hour and 23 minutes so far, just over 40 kilometres an hour is his
:28:51. > :29:00.average speed so far. We expect the race to be just over four hours.
:29:01. > :29:05.Here comes the main peloton. Splattered from head to toe. I think
:29:06. > :29:11.the gap has come down quite considerably now. It is going to
:29:12. > :29:14.take them half a minute to get up the finishing straight, Geraint
:29:15. > :29:18.Thomas is making his way through, he is on the other side of the park so
:29:19. > :29:23.perhaps one kilometre behind the group now, he has a long way to go
:29:24. > :29:30.to catch up. He is treading his way through all of the cars. He has two
:29:31. > :29:36.drop-down now, until he goes into the finishing straight.
:29:37. > :29:47.This is not good news for Terrence Thomas -- Terrence Thomas. He has
:29:48. > :29:54.Peter Kennaugh's lead is still very got a puncture.
:29:55. > :30:01.Peter Kennaugh's lead is still very healthy. I think it is going to be
:30:02. > :30:06.pretty similar to last time, when the time they cross the line, with
:30:07. > :30:11.Michael Hepburn tapping at the ribbon at the front for Australia. I
:30:12. > :30:20.actually think he has built on that lead and grabbed a few more seconds.
:30:21. > :30:26.This is where the riders are choosing to feed, rather than going
:30:27. > :30:29.back to team cars. It is often the way on a team races that there is a
:30:30. > :30:45.designated feeding area. Shane Archibold has regained his
:30:46. > :30:58.rhythm. We saw him struggling, but he has got back up there. He is not
:30:59. > :31:03.far behind, Geraint Thomas. There is a certain camaraderie with the team
:31:04. > :31:05.cars, he will accelerate slowly to help you stay in the slipstream,
:31:06. > :31:29.apart from this one! Nobody from the Welsh team has come
:31:30. > :31:36.to Shepherd Geraint Thomas back to the peloton. He has been left to
:31:37. > :31:44.fend for himself. The team cars tend to help out when so many has had a
:31:45. > :31:48.mishap like this. Peter Kennaugh's lead now, heading towards to minutes
:31:49. > :32:03.-- to magnets. Nobody is having an easy ride here.
:32:04. > :32:07.The shape of the cause that means that you have to work hard
:32:08. > :32:12.accelerating out of corners and into crimes. It is not a case of
:32:13. > :32:20.everybody rolling around waiting to start racing. Is a good cause. Is a
:32:21. > :32:24.different course, certainly. But it has made for interesting racing,
:32:25. > :32:28.certainly in the winning's race this morning. For a multisport event like
:32:29. > :32:32.the Commonwealth Games, it has kept it accessible to people and kept
:32:33. > :32:35.invisible, and there is always something different going on, and
:32:36. > :32:38.even the weather has played its part to make it more dynamic. This is one
:32:39. > :32:46.of the great free spectacles of to make it more dynamic. This is one
:32:47. > :32:54.events like the marathon. The closing ceremony is at Hampden Park
:32:55. > :32:58.later on today. It is down to Geraint Thomas to close Alaska blog
:32:59. > :33:02.metres as he comes towards the back of the peloton. They turned into
:33:03. > :33:11.Buchanan Street and back into the main pack for Geraint Thomas. The
:33:12. > :33:16.first hint of parts of the road surface drying out, as well. Some
:33:17. > :33:25.blue sky above. That won't last long!
:33:26. > :33:32.They will be happy, at least he is back in the race now, Geraint
:33:33. > :33:38.Thomas. The Namibian rider right in front of him, and William Routley
:33:39. > :33:40.from Canada, it seems as though half the Canadian team has congregated at
:33:41. > :33:46.the back of the peloton at the moment. Meanwhile, Michael Hepburn,
:33:47. > :33:53.for a change, continues to sit on the front. I think that is Tom Moses
:33:54. > :34:01.in the red and white of England about the front of the pack there,
:34:02. > :34:08.about fourth in line. And Alex Dowsett is also looking comfortable
:34:09. > :34:14.there. You can get a good idea of people's fatigue level by peddling
:34:15. > :34:18.frequency. The high-energy, the slower the cadence, they are
:34:19. > :34:24.starting to struggle, and the lower cadence, free spinning, are the dive
:34:25. > :34:28.that are on top of things than happy to sit there and just spin away. A
:34:29. > :34:34.difficult thing to do some these crimes. A struggle for Nic Hamilton
:34:35. > :34:41.and the back of the group there from Canada. Geraint Thomas is slowly
:34:42. > :34:46.working his way forward as Hamilton slides off the coat-tails of the
:34:47. > :34:48.peloton. It should be slides off the coat-tails of the
:34:49. > :34:56.peloton. It should able to get back in it though. There he is. At least
:34:57. > :34:57.we know why all the scenery is so green and lush. It gets well
:34:58. > :35:05.watered! On green and lush. It gets well
:35:06. > :35:11.Commonwealth Games has had fantastic weather. Especially the first few
:35:12. > :35:15.days. It when turned up, to be honest. I am a great fan of
:35:16. > :35:20.Scotland. I spent several months of the year in this part of the world
:35:21. > :35:24.riding my bike. It is a fantastic thing to be get out onto the open
:35:25. > :35:29.road with all the fantastic scenery. Any pathway that you can see, you
:35:30. > :35:32.can go on it. I really enjoy this part of the world. And we are in one
:35:33. > :35:34.of the most beautiful parts of the city, Kelvingrove Park, in the West
:35:35. > :35:56.End. Here is our leader. We are up by the university now. A
:35:57. > :36:04.courageous ride by Peter Kennaugh could. He has taken this race on and
:36:05. > :36:06.has even added a few more seconds onto his lead, slowly moving in the
:36:07. > :36:17.right direction for him. But onto his lead, slowly moving in the
:36:18. > :36:23.still to go. Still an awfully long way to go in this race, but if you
:36:24. > :36:28.have just tuned in, this man has led right from the start. He is hoping
:36:29. > :36:46.to take it from going to tape -- from gun to tape. I would say is the
:36:47. > :36:48.outright favourite for the event. It is amazing in more ways than one.
:36:49. > :36:52.Series had burn on the front for is amazing in more ways than one.
:36:53. > :37:02.Series had burn on Australia -- is Hepburn on the front for
:37:03. > :37:03.Australia. You can see the speed increasing around these corners with
:37:04. > :37:10.familiarity. It is getting used to increasing around these corners with
:37:11. > :37:15.just how far, how hard they can push it on each of these corners.
:37:16. > :37:18.Australia have made this race pretty much their own in recent
:37:19. > :37:23.Australia have made this race pretty having won the last four editions of
:37:24. > :37:33.the Commonwealth Games road race. Allan Davis was the winner in Delhi
:37:34. > :37:35.four years ago. The Australian's winning's team has an interesting
:37:36. > :37:42.tactics this morning, attacking pretty much from the start, and then
:37:43. > :37:48.attacking again as soon as they were caught. It was an attack relay. They
:37:49. > :37:50.try to force everyone else onto the back foot to force the strong teams
:37:51. > :37:58.to do all the chasing, but they could not just anybody away to set
:37:59. > :38:05.it up. Great George Street here. More problems this well, and James
:38:06. > :38:10.McLaughlin from Jersey has crashed. It does not look like he is getting
:38:11. > :38:14.up. Just regaining his composure at the side of the road. It looks as
:38:15. > :38:17.though his race might be run. He might have changed his mind. You
:38:18. > :38:25.might be able to get some assistance more quickly than he thought he
:38:26. > :38:29.would. Pretty steady service for the team. I guess this is not their day
:38:30. > :38:36.job. James McCallum we are looking at from Scotland. He is 35 years
:38:37. > :38:41.old. He is hoping to go out in style and he is retiring after the
:38:42. > :38:49.Commonwealth Games. He is competing in the Commonwealth Games for the
:38:50. > :38:56.fourth time. He was on the track. Australia now, Rohan Dennis has
:38:57. > :38:59.crashed early on, as you can see. It has taken him a long time to get
:39:00. > :39:04.back to the pits. It is not look very happy about this afternoon, not
:39:05. > :39:10.surprisingly. He was frustrated on Thursday with a silver medal, and
:39:11. > :39:18.now you say student -- now he has a souvenir on his. All you want now is
:39:19. > :39:23.a Camara following new! That was quite finite. I do not think we will
:39:24. > :39:30.be seeing him again this afternoon. A great shame for the race as a
:39:31. > :39:40.whole. Mark Cavendish giving a few more words of something. I think he
:39:41. > :39:46.is offering to pass on some more energy gels. It seemed to have quite
:39:47. > :39:58.a supply in his back pocket, the last time we saw. It is a 5000-6000
:39:59. > :39:59.calorie effort, this, two days of energy for a normal person packed
:40:00. > :40:21.into one bicycle race. 104 kilometres still to go. And he
:40:22. > :40:27.has added another second. The pattern for this race was
:40:28. > :40:30.established early on. You can say that again. They barely left the
:40:31. > :40:32.start line before Peter Kennaugh decided to stretch its legs and
:40:33. > :40:48.stretch everybody's legs as well. Believe it or not, I am just
:40:49. > :40:50.checking, and the average speed for the race is actually creeping up
:40:51. > :40:54.rather than down. Considering he the race is actually creeping up
:40:55. > :40:57.been attacking from the start, that is quite surprising, they are
:40:58. > :41:06.actually getting faster rather than slower. 41.2 kilometres an hour,
:41:07. > :41:14.that is the average now. Some fresh horses at the front. No panic from
:41:15. > :41:16.Australia. A long way to go. The pace of the peloton is still
:41:17. > :41:58.relatively steady. David Millar in a blue of Scotland
:41:59. > :42:04.in the middle of the pack. They are heading into Park Circus. Tom Moses
:42:05. > :42:09.in fourth position, and he has looked very comfortable throughout
:42:10. > :42:12.this race. Yes, he has stayed in position throughout the last couple
:42:13. > :42:20.of laps. A couple of wins for him during the season, the Rafah condor
:42:21. > :42:27.rider. He win a stage of Normandy Tour this season. He won the button
:42:28. > :42:34.and Melton cycle classic this season as well. I thought I saw Alex
:42:35. > :42:38.Dowsett back in that group, but in fact, he is in the next group on the
:42:39. > :42:42.road. I don't know whether he had an issue, but he is actually being
:42:43. > :42:46.road. I don't know whether he had an shown as a few seconds off the back.
:42:47. > :42:50.I wonder if they have come back together on a portion of the lab
:42:51. > :42:55.since the last major time check, or whether they are actually separated
:42:56. > :43:00.still. There is a ten second gap, and the time gaps are taken at the
:43:01. > :43:03.front of the group, so you only need to leave a couple of seconds of a
:43:04. > :43:07.gap and it certainly looks like ten. I would have expected him to be
:43:08. > :43:14.riding further forward. Back into the town setter, -- Centre, cutting
:43:15. > :43:25.across Buchanan Street and into George Square. There is our leader.
:43:26. > :43:32.Still surging ahead. He is ploughing a lone furrow. Peter Kennaugh's lead
:43:33. > :43:39.has grown a bit in the last couple of laps. About to make the left-hand
:43:40. > :43:51.turn into Montrose Street yet again. He is swinging out to make it a wide
:43:52. > :43:56.curve and will be conserving as much speed as possible as he hits the
:43:57. > :44:00.ramp. And a ramp it most certainly is. Dear selection is so important,
:44:01. > :44:05.you have to get it right before you start the climb. Otherwise you will
:44:06. > :44:14.come to a dead stop if you caught yourself caught out on a big ring.
:44:15. > :44:21.Electric Dears, a precise and consistent change. The Isle of Man
:44:22. > :44:32.is leading the way throughout this race so far. Meanwhile, a bit
:44:33. > :44:34.further back, Remi Pelletier, who was trying to chase Peter Kennaugh
:44:35. > :44:39.further back, Remi Pelletier, who was trying to chase early on, or
:44:40. > :44:48.trying to join him at the front of the race, not about to do so any
:44:49. > :44:59.more. Looking at the back of that peloton, I just saw a glimpse of
:45:00. > :45:07.Paul Oldham for England. Hepburn and UN are leading the peloton now,
:45:08. > :45:16.going through Nelson Mandela Place. -- Ewan. Everybody just using those
:45:17. > :45:25.little energy gels, 60 or 70 grams, -- Ewan. Everybody just using those
:45:26. > :45:29.maybe 150 calories. Some of them like bars, some of them preferred
:45:30. > :45:35.gels. You ought to be eating one every 20 minutes or so. Little and

:45:39. > :45:45.after that they have to keep on top of their energy expenditure. They
:45:46. > :45:48.carry around 2500 calories of glycogen in the muscles but when
:45:49. > :45:54.that has gone and you could use that in an hour and a half, you need to
:45:55. > :46:02.keep resupplying. He is settling in well, into the supporting role, Mark
:46:03. > :46:08.Cavendish. Just making sure that he is well fuelled. For the people
:46:09. > :46:16.watching, what about the liquid intake on an hour by hour basis? I
:46:17. > :46:20.noticed a little rip on the bottle, that was not quite right. Normally
:46:21. > :46:24.it is handed out so the rider can put their hand on the front of the
:46:25. > :46:32.bottle and take a bit of a push as they take it. That is something he
:46:33. > :46:36.has two learn as a director. Another Isle of Man rider, bronze-medallist
:46:37. > :46:40.on the track for years ago at the Commonwealth Games. When you think
:46:41. > :46:47.of the size of the island, the Isle of Man are putting up a phenomenally
:46:48. > :46:50.good team on the track and the road. Mark Cavendish spoke about this man
:46:51. > :46:59.as a possible favourite, but he seems to be struggling a bit, there.
:47:00. > :47:05.Mark Christian does ride on the road in his second season with the Rally
:47:06. > :47:12.team in the UK. 23 years of age. Back on Glasgow Green. We have
:47:13. > :47:14.team in the UK. 23 years of age. had a shot of David Millar from
:47:15. > :47:20.wild. He is loitering in the peloton in the top dozen, but he is
:47:21. > :47:23.wild. He is loitering in the peloton the front. He is there or
:47:24. > :47:29.thereabouts, that is his experience, you always see his name on the time
:47:30. > :47:32.check. He has a wealth of experience, David Millar. -- for a
:47:33. > :47:37.while. He said that experience, David Millar. -- for a
:47:38. > :47:41.is about for him, going into experience, David Millar. -- for a
:47:42. > :47:45.games, he is heading into the autumn of his career. I think it is
:47:46. > :47:48.games, he is heading into the autumn winter actually! He will retire at
:47:49. > :47:50.the end of the season and he hopes to go out in a blaze of glory here
:47:51. > :48:01.in Glasgow. It could have been a premature end
:48:02. > :48:08.to a career full of promise when in 2004 David Millar admitted taking
:48:09. > :48:14.drugs. By 2006 he had conquered his Demons, served his ban, and returned
:48:15. > :48:20.to the sport he loved. At eight years as a successful clean cyclist
:48:21. > :48:24.he retires at the end of the season. You look at where you have come from
:48:25. > :48:28.and the time you have had out of the sport and then coming back, there is
:48:29. > :48:32.something interesting in the way Scotland approached you and welcomed
:48:33. > :48:38.you back after obviously having the time-out? They always say you find
:48:39. > :48:42.your true friends in adversity and that was the case with Scotland,
:48:43. > :48:49.they really came through to support me through everything. As I was
:48:50. > :48:54.serving my ban I was serving time in Glasgow and Edinburgh with friends,
:48:55. > :48:58.and it felt like I was coming home, I felt at home and people were so
:48:59. > :49:08.kind to me. This is my homeland. I am very proud to be part of the
:49:09. > :49:12.team. David Millar is the Commonwealth Games time trial
:49:13. > :49:15.champion and gold medal winner! The first Scot ever to win a gold medal
:49:16. > :49:21.on the road in the history of the Commonwealth Games. You have won
:49:22. > :49:26.some big races, stages, time trials, but the victory in Delhi, what did
:49:27. > :49:31.it mean? I was surprised by how much it meant, I had not expected it to
:49:32. > :49:35.be so important, I had finished second at the World Championships. I
:49:36. > :49:39.got to the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and all of a sudden it felt
:49:40. > :49:46.different. I felt a lot more honest and real, and it felt more sincere.
:49:47. > :49:50.It was the first time I had ever raced for Scotland which I had not
:49:51. > :49:57.expected the effect it would have on me and to win, it was all very kind
:49:58. > :50:04.of... Something very unexpected. Time trial is one thing, you can
:50:05. > :50:07.switch off and become a robot, but the road race on Sunday will be
:50:08. > :50:12.crazy because I have always raced on the road with an emotional engine, I
:50:13. > :50:17.thrive off that. It will be a good race and it will look great on TV.
:50:18. > :50:23.For us it is not boring, we have to be switched on and engage the whole
:50:24. > :50:26.time. You are retiring at the end of the year, that brings different
:50:27. > :50:31.emotions to the game as well? I don't know how much difference it
:50:32. > :50:35.will make actually because I am very performance driven, I trained hard
:50:36. > :50:38.and I am feeling good and I'm trying to disengage from everything else
:50:39. > :50:43.that is going on especially what happened at the tour. When I found
:50:44. > :50:46.out I was not part of the Tour de France it made me more focused on
:50:47. > :50:53.doing this for the right reasons which was to be at my best. What
:50:54. > :50:57.will it be like to ride around the roads of Glasgow? I saw it at the
:50:58. > :51:01.national championships last year and I have never seen such support on
:51:02. > :51:06.the road, my whole family and my parents are here, it will be one of
:51:07. > :51:09.my final races, in front of a Glaswegian crowd, some of my
:51:10. > :51:20.earliest memories are from Glasgow, it is quite a poetic full circle.
:51:21. > :51:27.These weather conditions are rather more like what you would expect in
:51:28. > :51:33.the spring classics, this is not what it should be like here in the
:51:34. > :51:39.first weekend of August. The leaders are still out on the road, Pete
:51:40. > :51:44.Kennaugh, almost to the second his lead is remaining the same, but
:51:45. > :51:47.three riders have simultaneously come through the line including Alex
:51:48. > :51:52.Dowsett, the gold-medallist in the individual time trial on Thursday
:51:53. > :51:56.for England, Andy Fenn for Scotland as well and Mark Christian of the
:51:57. > :51:59.Isle of Man, those three rolled off the inside of the course and through
:52:00. > :52:05.the barriers at the end of that stage, at the end of that lap, I
:52:06. > :52:09.should say. It is a tough race, and if you do not think you have got it
:52:10. > :52:13.in your legs there is not a lot of reason to stay there, particularly
:52:14. > :52:16.if your main man is out in front as Pete Kennaugh is. He is clearly not
:52:17. > :52:23.going to be caught, if at Pete Kennaugh is. He is clearly not
:52:24. > :52:27.long time. There is not a lot of teamwork which needs to be done and
:52:28. > :52:33.the weather conditions are now atrocious. It is shooting down here.
:52:34. > :52:39.On Glasgow Green. These riders have had a tough day in the saddle.
:52:40. > :52:43.Pretty much in all weather conditions, really. Only 20 minutes
:52:44. > :52:48.ago they were riding in bright sunshine, and it is beginning to
:52:49. > :52:53.show the first hint of drying out, and then the heavens open again.
:52:54. > :52:56.Michael Hepburn for Australia on the front and Tom Moses with
:52:57. > :53:00.Michael Hepburn for Australia on the helmet in the red and white of
:53:01. > :53:01.England, third in line with the black helmet and red line is Sam
:53:02. > :53:06.Harrison for Wales, black helmet and red line is Sam
:53:07. > :53:09.that position for most of the race, marshalling things towards the front
:53:10. > :53:13.of the peloton and keeping an eye on things. If you have just tuned in,
:53:14. > :53:19.the leader has been ahead from the start of the race. 168 kilometres
:53:20. > :53:25.long, and this race still has 95 kilometres to go. That is a long
:53:26. > :53:30.way. You can tell by his expression that he is starting to feel it now
:53:31. > :53:34.and I can tell you there is only 33 guys left in contention in the
:53:35. > :53:38.racing clothing Pete Kennaugh. It is the Australian team that are trying
:53:39. > :53:45.to control it, they lost Rohan Dennis to crash earlier on which was
:53:46. > :53:49.real shame. Dowsett, there is Alex Dowsett, a rather different end to
:53:50. > :53:53.proceedings compared to Thursday, I think he enjoyed the time trial more
:53:54. > :54:00.than today, it is fair to say. It is tough out there. It gives UNIDO of
:54:01. > :54:10.what kind of conditions they are having to enjoy. -- it gives you an
:54:11. > :54:17.idea. Geraint Thomas is still to the fore, and so are the whole Welsh
:54:18. > :54:20.team, right near the front. Simon Clarke is an interesting ride and
:54:21. > :54:22.Renshaw, we have not seen anything from the Australian favourite, all
:54:23. > :54:27.of the work is being done for him. from the Australian favourite, all
:54:28. > :54:35.David Millar is still in there as well. Clarke is a handy rider, we
:54:36. > :54:38.have not mentioned him in the coverage so far, his first
:54:39. > :54:45.Commonwealth Games but he has been riding world championships since
:54:46. > :54:48.2007 and he was key for Australia in 2009 when Cadel Evans won the World
:54:49. > :54:52.Championships, so he knows what these races are about and he is not
:54:53. > :54:57.afraid to claim victory for himself as well, winning a couple of years
:54:58. > :55:03.ago, so I wonder whether he could be a player later. He certainly can
:55:04. > :55:06.be. We were talking earlier about the Commonwealth Games road race, it
:55:07. > :55:13.is unusual to have people with designated roles, they are riding
:55:14. > :55:17.for different countries now. So the teams... They do not have that
:55:18. > :55:20.strength in depth, it makes for an individual type of race with people
:55:21. > :55:23.helping each other out in the same jersey as much as they can, but
:55:24. > :55:29.apart from the strength of Australia, it is changing a lot, the
:55:30. > :55:35.capabilities and the roles of the riders in the team. Delhi was a
:55:36. > :55:38.great case in point, everybody knew that Mark Cavendish was the
:55:39. > :55:45.favourite and nobody wanted to arrive with him.
:55:46. > :55:48.favourite and nobody wanted to same. On the last lap he only gained
:55:49. > :55:55.two seconds, so to all intents and purposes it has stayed as it was. He
:55:56. > :55:59.has always been static or clawing himself forward, it has not been
:56:00. > :56:03.slipping, his body language is showing fatigue which is hardly
:56:04. > :56:06.surprising as the two hours of racing but it is probably just
:56:07. > :56:14.coming home to him that he has another two hours left to go.
:56:15. > :56:23.Through Kelvingrove Park again. Over the river. He is the only hope, Jake
:56:24. > :56:29.Kelly is still in there but with all due respect, I think the hopes are
:56:30. > :56:39.pin on Pete Kennaugh. This is a do or die effort. -- pinned. There,
:56:40. > :56:42.pin on Pete Kennaugh. This is a do England, is Paul Oldham. We will be
:56:43. > :56:54.able to see whether he is off the front or off the back. Paul Oldham
:56:55. > :57:01.actually won the cyclo-cross cyclo-cross last year. He is still
:57:02. > :57:06.well within sight of the peloton. Riding in the games for the first
:57:07. > :57:10.time at the age of 36. A rider who still manages to hold down a
:57:11. > :57:18.full-time job as well. A good ride from him in the mountain bike race,
:57:19. > :57:20.ninth place. The weather is really testing the riders motivation to
:57:21. > :57:27.continue now. It is horrible conditions. They are at the worst
:57:28. > :57:29.point in the race for morale, they have two hours left and their legs
:57:30. > :58:04.are hurting, the rain is coming down,
:58:05. > :58:08.out the front for awhile and he is still there. Ewan is on his wheel.
:58:09. > :58:17.He is having to do the work of two men. His speed has been consistent
:58:18. > :58:18.all the way through. Around 45 kilometres prow at all the way
:58:19. > :58:29.through. Over near kilometres prow at all the way
:58:30. > :58:33.Street. He is trying to do it the hard way here, isn't he? There is
:58:34. > :58:38.the hardware it and the hard way here, isn't he? There is
:58:39. > :58:39.this is the second one! Is absolutely, but he is
:58:40. > :58:42.this is the second one! Is front as he has been since the start
:58:43. > :58:47.of the race. He has been able front as he has been since the start
:58:48. > :58:55.pick his own line and choose how he wanted to ride. Choosing how to get
:58:56. > :58:58.in and out of the climbs. This circuit is not for sitting in and
:58:59. > :59:04.waiting for sprints in the latter part of the race, everybody is
:59:05. > :59:08.having to constantly accelerate through the climbs, nobody is
:59:09. > :59:16.getting an easy ride. Apart from this bit here, down Gibson Street.
:59:17. > :59:32.Apart from this bit! Here is the leader, still buy the best part of a
:59:33. > :59:35.couple of minutes. -- by. 77 kilometres, we will see
:59:36. > :59:41.couple of minutes. -- by. 77 holding up. Heading towards the
:59:42. > :59:52.two-hour mark in the saddle now. That is pretty quick.
:59:53. > :59:58.There, a little bit further back, Peter Hawkins for Northern Ireland.
:59:59. > :00:00.I do not know Peter Hawkins for Northern Ireland.
:00:01. > :00:17.I do not whether he has had a mechanical issue, or a puncture.
:00:18. > :00:24.Relentless pace being set by the Australian team. Now, they are
:00:25. > :00:30.through, and sure enough, we were talking about the lead not slipping,
:00:31. > :00:33.well, they have just taken a second back for the first time since this
:00:34. > :00:35.break was properly established. He has been eking out a little bit more
:00:36. > :00:36.of a break was properly established. He
:00:37. > :00:49.has been eking out a little lead every lap, well, it is 1.50 now, so
:00:50. > :00:53.he has surrendered one second. At some point it has got to tell. He
:00:54. > :01:01.has been out there are so long on his own. The rider we are looking at
:01:02. > :01:04.is James McCallum for Scotland. Looks like he might have had enough
:01:05. > :01:13.for the day as well. And who can blame them? It has been a tough,
:01:14. > :01:19.attritional day in the saddle. We have 30 chasing riders left now, in
:01:20. > :01:24.what I am going to have to call the main field. It is bigger than a
:01:25. > :01:38.breakaway. Here is the front of the chase. And more retirements. That is
:01:39. > :01:43.Elliot Baxter, number 64, for the Isle of Man. And the other rider is
:01:44. > :01:50.Andrew Roach. As we mentioned earlier, a great record for Andrew
:01:51. > :01:59.Roach, seven consecutive Commonwealth Games, he has ridden
:02:00. > :02:04.in. About 65 riders have dropped out up to now, and that number is
:02:05. > :02:07.climbing by the minute. It is more sunny over there, but we are not
:02:08. > :02:49.going over there. We are staying here, under the dark clouds.
:02:50. > :02:56.quite a long time, certainly since Rohan Dennis fell off, at the front
:02:57. > :03:06.of the peloton. I reckon David Millar is about 12-15 riders back.
:03:07. > :03:12.Wales are very well represented. Geraint Thomas will be in the thick
:03:13. > :03:23.of that as well. Just a bit further back, we are looking at Michael
:03:24. > :03:38.Northey. About ten days ago, he won in Beverley, in the British Cycling
:03:39. > :03:40.Series. Certainly Did Enough For The Kiwis To Decide To Put Him
:03:41. > :03:48.Series. Certainly Did Enough For The Race. Back With Kennaugh At The
:03:49. > :03:59.Front. Eking out every second he possibly can. Heading back in
:04:00. > :04:19.towards Nelson Mandela Place, in the city centre.
:04:20. > :04:29.If it had been held last weekend, it would have been absolutely
:04:30. > :04:43.beautiful, in the high 20s. It has not been cold at all.
:04:44. > :05:00.SIMON BROTHERTON: There is Thomas, on the left-hand side, with the blue
:05:01. > :05:09.on his helmet. Here we go, coming onto Montrose Street.
:05:10. > :05:14.CHRIS BOARDMAN: Working hard now, but still looking in good shape, as
:05:15. > :05:22.he powers up this climb of a couple of hundred metres, 20% gradient at
:05:23. > :05:25.its steepest point. I really like this camera angle, it just gives an
:05:26. > :05:31.indication of what they are having to face on every single lap here.
:05:32. > :05:35.So, the British national road race champion still leads the way. An
:05:36. > :05:40.Olympic gold medallist on the track from London 2012, in the team
:05:41. > :05:49.pursuit. A very versatile bike rider. The Tour of Austria, but he
:05:50. > :05:54.did not get the Tour de France selection. And here is the chase.
:05:55. > :06:10.did not get the Tour de France Still a fair way back.
:06:11. > :06:21.So, Hepburn, Caleb Ewan towards the front. Scott Thwaites getting
:06:22. > :06:33.involved for England. Russell Downing also in the front doors and
:06:34. > :06:41.also. Quite an interest in rider is Thomas Moses, he has been close to
:06:42. > :06:46.the front all day. He took a stage in the Tour of Normandy earlier in
:06:47. > :07:03.the year as well, so, used to hard racing. Yes, he has been in the
:07:04. > :07:08.front ten or so. Here is Montrose Street. David Millar staying seated
:07:09. > :07:24.for much of this climb so far. Street. David Millar staying seated
:07:25. > :07:29.halfway back, in the peloton. Luke Rowe is also an interesting
:07:30. > :07:35.contender. Well, he has looked strong all the way through. He won
:07:36. > :07:41.the national road race earlier in the year, and the time trial. As
:07:42. > :07:47.they are strung out, heading back into the centre of town. The lid is
:07:48. > :08:04.staying exactly the same, one minute 50.
:08:05. > :08:13.That is how tough it is, as the race wears on. Sam Harrison, for Wales.
:08:14. > :08:17.No wonder the photographers are all lined up at the side of the road, to
:08:18. > :08:32.get their pictures for tomorrow morning. It looks like he has had
:08:33. > :08:36.enough, doesn't it? And they will take this cobbled section steadily.
:08:37. > :08:51.That group is just getting smaller and smaller all of the time, isn't
:08:52. > :08:55.it? But it is in one long line, so it is difficult for the camera to
:08:56. > :08:58.see how many people are there. But it has got to be getting
:08:59. > :09:10.see how many people are there. But around 30 people left, they
:09:11. > :09:10.see how many people are there. But losing people all the time. Look at
:09:11. > :09:16.that, that is so miserable. I losing people all the time. Look at
:09:17. > :09:19.attritional is the word of the losing people all the time. Look at
:09:20. > :09:23.and that is what we have seen. We have seen Pete Kennaugh taking the
:09:24. > :09:28.race to everybody else, and behind, have seen Pete Kennaugh taking the
:09:29. > :09:35.relentless pace that he has been setting, and they have had
:09:36. > :09:39.relentless pace that he has been Surprisingly few punctures. We have
:09:40. > :09:40.seen the road carefully swept on several occasions, even during the
:09:41. > :09:45.race today. It is pretty windy several occasions, even during the
:09:46. > :09:51.there today. The flags are blowing around all over the place, the trees
:09:52. > :09:55.as well. For an individual, that can really make a difference, when you
:09:56. > :10:01.are doing a loan breakaway. Behind you, the option is there for the
:10:02. > :10:08.riders to take it in turns to go at the front of the group. Here is the
:10:09. > :10:14.leader, on his own, about to come into the finishing straight again. I
:10:15. > :10:21.do not think the situation has changed too much in terms of the
:10:22. > :10:30.gap. Just over 84 kilometres still to go. That will be about two hours
:10:31. > :10:44.ten of racing remaining now. to go. That will be about two hours
:10:45. > :10:50.laps to go. Halfway through the race. If Pete Kennaugh somehow
:10:51. > :10:52.manages to pull this one off, it will be the most hard-fought win of
:10:53. > :10:59.his career, that is for sure. If he can win it, he deserves two gold
:11:00. > :11:12.medals around his neck. There is Hepburn, still at the front of the
:11:13. > :11:14.group. It is wet and wild out there. That field of 140 has been whittled
:11:15. > :11:46.right down. You can see Thomas Moses in the
:11:47. > :11:49.middle, with the white shades on. There is David Millar, up towards
:11:50. > :12:14.the front, as well. Look at that. You would think it was November.
:12:15. > :12:18.out to cheer them on. Well, it is quite a spectacle for many of these
:12:19. > :12:22.people, to come out for what would be their hometown. And I think the
:12:23. > :12:30.people of Glasgow have been fantastic. Right, let's have a look
:12:31. > :12:41.at the gap. It has gone up slightly, by about five seconds! Scott
:12:42. > :12:54.Thwaites, the Yorkshireman, is up there. Tom Moses, as we have been
:12:55. > :12:58.saying. A good trio therefore Wales. It looks like Simon Clarke has been
:12:59. > :13:04.tasked to sit back with Mark Renshaw. And Henderson as well, he
:13:05. > :13:07.crashed out of the Tour de France with a very nasty looking knee
:13:08. > :13:21.injury, but they stuck him back together. Great sprinter. In his
:13:22. > :13:26.position, I think his best option will be to wait and see how it pans
:13:27. > :13:31.out. If it comes down to a small group and he is still there, he will
:13:32. > :13:35.have a good shot at it. Mark Renshaw is a really good lead out man, a
:13:36. > :13:39.good sprinter, he got lots of high placings in the recent Tour de
:13:40. > :13:45.France, but not managing to clinch the wins. Primarily, he has been a
:13:46. > :13:52.great lead out rider for Mark Cavendish. Renshaw, riding for
:13:53. > :14:04.Australia for the first time in a decade. Think it was the Olympics in
:14:05. > :14:11.Athens. He is an Olympic told medallist on the track as well. Lap
:14:12. > :14:21.number seven. Pete Kennaugh, medallist on the track as well. Lap
:14:22. > :14:35.Vincent Street, going parallel with the River Clyde, heading west. He is
:14:36. > :14:41.digging deep here. This next hour is going to be decisive for him. Once
:14:42. > :14:42.you get inside and our chill racing to go, it
:14:43. > :14:44.you get inside and our chill racing barrier, and you start to drive for
:14:45. > :15:15.the line. race so far. A total distance of
:15:16. > :15:19.168, metres today. We've had a lone leader since about a quarter of the
:15:20. > :15:23.way through the first lap, something like that. 95 kilometres alone at
:15:24. > :15:27.the moment he's spent. Here's Buchanan Street. Well, not
:15:28. > :15:37.completely alone. We've been with him! Clinging onto the back of that
:15:38. > :15:48.group is Connor McConvey from Northern Ireland. A little luck over
:15:49. > :15:49.the make-up of that group again, which is now down to 28 riders,
:15:50. > :15:55.the make-up of that group again, we suspected, as we saw some of the
:15:56. > :16:09.names slipping off the back, Wales or in exceptionally good position.
:16:10. > :16:18.That's a very, very strong four with multiple cards to play. Absolutely.
:16:19. > :16:24.Hepburn still on the front. The Australians are going all in with a
:16:25. > :16:27.sprint and are going to look after Renshaw but Wales have got four
:16:28. > :16:30.attacking riders there so considering Australia are using up
:16:31. > :16:33.their troops now to try and control the race, it's going to be very
:16:34. > :16:41.difficult to keep it together for the sprint.
:16:42. > :16:51.David Millar, one of the elder statesman of the sport group, will
:16:52. > :16:52.know that and he will probably let the Welsh through the opening
:16:53. > :16:58.punches and get inside the last 50 kilometres and he will try to
:16:59. > :17:10.counter that. It's like a monsoon out there. Sam Harrison has had
:17:11. > :17:16.enough but showed his face at the front of the peloton for quite a
:17:17. > :17:18.while today. And Harrison nearly won a medal four years ago as an

:17:27. > :17:27.as well. But the longer the race goes on, the harder it seems to
:17:28. > :17:45.rain. This is the worst we've seen out on
:17:46. > :17:55.the course so far by a long stretch. Even in the midst of these
:17:56. > :17:59.conditions, the riders have got to keep eating and drinking every 20
:18:00. > :18:01.minutes all the way through this to keep on top of energy levels.
:18:02. > :18:03.There's so much to do. It sounds like an awful long time out there in
:18:04. > :18:06.the rain but there's so much to concentrate on. The riders have got
:18:07. > :18:10.their hands full fitting everything in. With the rain bouncing on the
:18:11. > :18:13.road like this and the headlights shining brightly, it isn't
:18:14. > :18:18.dissimilar to the conditions in the Olympic Games in the women's road
:18:19. > :18:22.race a couple of years ago. That was a battle between Marianne Vos and

:19:29. > :19:32.He didn't want to be doing this all alone but nobody managed to get
:19:33. > :19:37.across to him. That could have been disastrous, a brolly in your
:19:38. > :19:42.spokes! An ignominious end to a brave breakaway that nearly was. A
:19:43. > :19:51.fine piece brave breakaway that nearly was. A
:19:52. > :19:56.our race leader. A note to anyone on the side of the road, hang on to
:19:57. > :19:59.your brollies. He grits his teeth. He knows what's
:20:00. > :20:06.your brollies. He grits his teeth. this climb a few times today.
:20:07. > :20:08.your brollies. He grits his teeth. going to hurt and it's going to be a

:20:36. > :20:46.around the same. up soon and it seems to be hovering
:20:47. > :20:56.peloton at bay. There's James McCallum. He has written
:20:57. > :21:02.peloton at bay. There's James Commonwealth Games race at 35, the
:21:03. > :21:11.fourth time in the games. Bronze medallist from Melbourne in 2006 in
:21:12. > :21:15.the scratch race. And McCallum right at the end of his career given the
:21:16. > :21:19.chance to ride at home in the Commonwealth Games, so a memorable
:21:20. > :21:27.couple of weeks for him on the track and on the road. Look at the water
:21:28. > :21:28.everywhere as the peloton/ splash their way through the streets of the
:21:29. > :21:43.city. The weather hasn't dampened the
:21:44. > :21:47.enthusiasm of the crowd. A lot of cheering all the way round. A
:21:48. > :21:54.fantastic turnout from the people of Glasgow for this race and for the
:21:55. > :22:04.women's race this morning. So Hepburn, Thwaites, Moses are among
:22:05. > :22:05.the riders at the front. We got at least three riders from Wales who
:22:06. > :22:13.are obscured at the moment. I least three riders from Wales who
:22:14. > :22:15.just see the blue of the helmet of Geraint Thomas about half a dozen
:22:16. > :22:21.riders back. The gap we've been given is 1.49 now so fluctuating
:22:22. > :22:26.around that 1.49 to 1.55 mark. Holding his own but not making any
:22:27. > :22:32.more inroads and when the racing starts behind, the gap is going to
:22:33. > :22:37.whittle down very quickly. It's hard to see how he could have kept
:22:38. > :22:40.something back but he's going to need to be able to give it a little
:22:41. > :22:45.bit more gas in that last hour. There's more to come from that chase
:22:46. > :22:51.group, a lot more to come. There's not much of the chase group left
:22:52. > :22:58.now. It's down to 25 riders. They're losing one or two men every lap.
:22:59. > :23:13.They're all heading down Gibson Street here. Alongside the rivulets
:23:14. > :23:24.of water which are also racing downhill at a fair old rate of
:23:25. > :23:34.Heading into Woodlands Road. There will be a right-hand turn shortly.
:23:35. > :23:44.That's Jessie Sargent from New Zealand we're looking at. Rather
:23:45. > :23:49.hard to tell with his number obscured but yes, it is him. Fifth
:23:50. > :23:51.in the time trial. He won a few stages
:23:52. > :23:57.in the time trial. He won a few he is a rider with a couple of
:23:58. > :24:06.Olympic bronze medals from the track.
:24:07. > :24:18.Hepburn continues to ride on the front. Even without Rohan Dennis,
:24:19. > :24:23.they've got a super strong team here but they are having to use them up
:24:24. > :24:28.to stay in contention in this race. I can't help wondering what would
:24:29. > :24:33.happen if they decided to stop chasing - what would the home teams
:24:34. > :24:37.do? Would they chase Peter Kennaugh? It seems like they've decided that
:24:38. > :24:42.home nations aren't going to chase each other so it must be up to them.
:24:43. > :24:49.They've asked for no assistance at all for the entirety of this race.
:24:50. > :25:03.Kennaugh now riding back along Souchiehall Street. Just into
:25:04. > :25:08.Blythswood Street. Almost likes of water across the road in parts. He's
:25:09. > :25:18.back there on that corner a little further down the road.
:25:19. > :25:29.Look at those lethal looking cobbles shining menacingly. A slight wobble
:25:30. > :25:51.from Byrne on that corner. Just at Charrington Ross at the
:25:52. > :26:00.moment, into Souchiehall Street. Further up the road, here is the
:26:01. > :26:11.leader. -- Charrington -- Charing Cross. There seems to be a little
:26:12. > :26:15.bit more movement in the shoulders now. I don't know whether it's
:26:16. > :26:20.fatigue or if they are starting to turn the screw a little bit. He has
:26:21. > :26:23.been on the front for a long time and they are starting to wind it up
:26:24. > :26:30.a little bit now, you sense. Less than 75 kilometres to go in this
:26:31. > :26:40.race. Not a big gap if you had a full team to chase. It's a
:26:41. > :26:46.respectable. You would want to be standing next to those barriers -
:26:47. > :26:51.you'd be absolutely drenched as the cars go past if you aren't already!
:26:52. > :26:57.A bit of a moot point for most of these riders and spectators. Here is
:26:58. > :27:01.Kennaugh now, onto Montrose Street once again. Really getting stuck
:27:02. > :27:16.into this. He's really feeling it now. That's
:27:17. > :27:23.the first time we've seen him look like that, driving over the top
:27:24. > :27:27.here. We've seen him float over this for the first few laps. It's really
:27:28. > :27:31.starting to set in. It's a long old afternoon at the best of times out
:27:32. > :27:40.on your own likeness in conditions like this, it's a gargantuan effort
:27:41. > :27:42.from Kennaugh. Here towards Mandela Place comes the chasing group, still
:27:43. > :28:09.led by Michael Hepburn of Australia. I think that might have been Grant
:28:10. > :28:16.Ferguson but I'm not sure. I think it was Ferguson on the back, his
:28:17. > :28:22.number slightly obscured. You have to hand it to the Australians - they
:28:23. > :28:27.know when the work is down to them to do and they've just got on with
:28:28. > :28:32.it. By the way, Ferguson doing well hanging in there. 20 years of age
:28:33. > :28:37.and was fifth in the men's mountain bike race the other day. A good bike
:28:38. > :28:48.handler and those skills have come in handy today. Montrose Street for
:28:49. > :28:53.the chase group. Hepburn leading. For weights and Moses still up there
:28:54. > :29:01.for England with Nathan Haas in the greenhouse net for Australia.
:29:02. > :29:07.Everybody working hard on this kind now. Tom Scully and Jack Bauer still
:29:08. > :29:15.there or thereabouts for New Zealand. There is Grant Ferguson.
:29:16. > :29:34.Just off the back of the peloton. Kennaugh's lead, as he comes to the
:29:35. > :29:41.end of this latest lap, lap seven out of 12, still stands at 1.45
:29:42. > :29:46.minutes ahead of the chasing peloton. We are now going to take a
:29:47. > :29:51.very short break for today's Commonwealth Games headlines. Live,
:29:52. > :30:02.uninterrupted coverage of this rogue race is on the red button. Well,
:30:03. > :30:06.looking at those pictures, torrential downpours here in
:30:07. > :30:10.Glasgow, yet another indication of how the Scottish sports fans are
:30:11. > :30:14.loving these Games, still watching the race in numbers, despite the
:30:15. > :30:21.conditions. Let's bring you right up to date with the final day of these
:30:22. > :30:26.Commonwealth Games. First up this morning, Lizzie Armitstead blitzed
:30:27. > :30:32.the rest in the women's road race. One late, well timed attack clinched
:30:33. > :30:38.gold. Emma Pooley got silver in her last ever race. Chris and Gabby
:30:39. > :30:46.Adcock took hold in the badminton in the mixed doubles, overcoming their
:30:47. > :31:01.initial opponents. -- their English opponents. Kashyap won the men's
:31:02. > :31:16.singles title for India in the badminton. New Zealand took the
:31:17. > :31:19.bronze medal match in -- New Zealand lost to England in the bronze medal
:31:20. > :31:26.match in the hockey on a penalty shoot-out. And Australia were
:31:27. > :31:34.imperious against India in the final. And even more Australian
:31:35. > :31:39.success on this last day of these Commonwealth Games, this time in the
:31:40. > :31:48.netball, overpowering New Zealand to win gold. So, five more gold medals
:31:49. > :32:12.to be won this afternoon. This is how it is looking.
:32:13. > :32:23.So, you are completely up-to-date. Let's hand you back to Chris
:32:24. > :32:26.Boardman and Simon Brotherton. SIMON BROTHERTON: Strong legs
:32:27. > :32:35.required now, and steely resolve, for Pete Kennaugh. He is now going
:32:36. > :32:41.out onto lap eight of 12. And here come the chase group, led by Michael
:32:42. > :32:43.Hepburn of Australia. Australia starting to group up towards the
:32:44. > :33:17.front. and Geraint Thomas. He has got the
:33:18. > :33:24.blue on his helmet, on the left of the group, as we look.
:33:25. > :33:27.CHRIS BOARDMAN: He has been very quietly just staying in the group,
:33:28. > :33:34.as have all of the favourites. This group has been whittled down to just
:33:35. > :33:39.over 25 riders. We were saying earlier, Wales have got a really
:33:40. > :33:43.nice group of riders, all very attacking. It is all very well
:33:44. > :33:48.Australia trying to keep it together for the Sprint, but there are riders
:33:49. > :33:53.in here, including David Millar, who will not want that to happen. The
:33:54. > :33:58.last couple of laps are set to be explosive. Absolutely. As you say,
:33:59. > :34:04.there are a good many riders in here who will not want a group anything
:34:05. > :34:10.like this size. They are all taking on some energy and fluids, as they
:34:11. > :34:13.go through the pits. That lead for Pete Kennaugh has more or less
:34:14. > :34:19.stayed the same, as Nathan Haas comes away from the front of the
:34:20. > :34:22.group. This is interesting, they have let him just ride off the
:34:23. > :34:27.front. The other teams will have to close the gap to that Australian. I
:34:28. > :34:37.am not quite sure how he developed that through the feed zone. Some of
:34:38. > :34:43.the other riders may have to come and do a bit of pacemaking.
:34:44. > :34:45.20-year-old Grant Ferguson for Scotland is also in that group.
:34:46. > :34:50.Fifth in the mountain Scotland is also in that group.
:34:51. > :35:03.is in domain, the only, chasing group, really. This rider here set
:35:04. > :35:15.off almost from the start of the race. There is Nathan Haas, from
:35:16. > :35:16.Australia, the Garmin-Sharp rider. This is an interesting
:35:17. > :35:21.Australia, the Garmin-Sharp rider. They have let him slip off the
:35:22. > :35:25.front, and everybody else has been caught napping. Suddenly, the onus
:35:26. > :35:30.is not on Australia to do all of the pacemaking. This is a move that they
:35:31. > :35:34.had to make, otherwise they would be forced into having to chase
:35:35. > :35:39.everything for Renshaw, and they have not got enough troops left to
:35:40. > :35:45.do that, since they have the crash with Rohan Dennis, and lost one of
:35:46. > :35:58.their main men. Nathan has finished second in the Tour of
:35:59. > :36:13.He took advantage of the situation through the feed area, to get away
:36:14. > :36:17.from the front. This is a very good tactical move by the Australians, to
:36:18. > :36:30.get themselves out of the hot seat, away from having to do all of that
:36:31. > :36:36.chasing. Pete Kennaugh's lead, staying around the 1.48 mark, it
:36:37. > :36:47.seems like it has been more or less the same for ever. Yes, they have
:36:48. > :36:55.been matched superbly on speed all of the time. 67 to go. We are back
:36:56. > :37:12.with Nathan Haas, riding up Buchanan street. Suddenly he is on a
:37:13. > :37:15.mission, he has to close that gap to Pete Kennaugh. Either way, it works
:37:16. > :37:20.well for Australia, whether he succeeds or not, does the rest of
:37:21. > :37:25.the field is obliged to chase him. There are now two medals up the
:37:26. > :37:30.road. If they want to get back on terms, they will have to they will
:37:31. > :37:33.road. If they want to get back on not want Kennaugh and Nathan Haas to
:37:34. > :37:39.get together and work together for the final hour of racing. Nathan
:37:40. > :37:49.Haas has been sitting in behind a couple of his team-mates for the
:37:50. > :37:55.last three or four laps. He has just opened up a 22nd advantage over the
:37:56. > :38:06.peloton. Now, are the rest of the field going to take the bait and
:38:07. > :38:10.start to do some of the work. I think it is doubly
:38:11. > :38:16.start to do some of the work. I Australian team. Nathan Haas is not
:38:17. > :38:23.their strongest rider, so they are using hot him up, to go and actors
:38:24. > :38:24.bait. Well, they have lost Rohan Dennis to injury, Michael Hepburn
:38:25. > :38:27.has done a lot of Dennis to injury, Michael Hepburn
:38:28. > :38:33.front, but they still have Caleb Ewan, if it comes down to a speedy
:38:34. > :38:41.finish. Simon Clarke is also a canny operator, and of course, the big
:38:42. > :38:43.one, Mark Renshaw. It is New Zealand who have been forced to take up the
:38:44. > :39:00.pacemaking. The Australians, able to take it
:39:01. > :39:13.easy on the front of that group, for the moment at least. We are back
:39:14. > :39:21.with Haas, second on the road. Team-mate of David Millar during the
:39:22. > :39:26.regular season. Just 26 men left in this race, to contest the medals.
:39:27. > :39:36.There were 140 starters this morning.
:39:37. > :39:50.Through the park, and over the river Kelvin. He has got the line through
:39:51. > :39:58.here down to a tee now. He has certainly had plenty of actives at
:39:59. > :40:06.picking his own line. His team letting him know the situation
:40:07. > :40:11.behind. Encouragement given thereby Mark Cavendish, in his temporary
:40:12. > :40:17.role as the directeur sportif for the Isle of Man. He takes just one
:40:18. > :40:21.bottle, and he will eat the food as and when he needs it. Constant
:40:22. > :40:26.supplies, so that he carries the minimum required with him, when
:40:27. > :40:34.riding. It is all about marginal gains. A suggestion there that he
:40:35. > :40:41.has gained a bit on the peloton, according to those numbers. Through
:40:42. > :40:49.Kelvingrove Park. With Nathan Haas, the chaser. The Australians of
:40:50. > :40:55.course have stopped now, so Hepburn, who has been doing all of that
:40:56. > :41:00.strong work to try and stay in touch with Pete Kennaugh, he has now said,
:41:01. > :41:04.hey, I am not working. It is now down to the New Zealanders to do the
:41:05. > :41:08.work. While they have been having a chat about who is going to do what,
:41:09. > :41:13.Pete Kennaugh has allowed on and gained a few more seconds. You
:41:14. > :41:17.cannot blame Hepburn, he has been taking the wind himself for a long
:41:18. > :41:25.time in this race. Coming down through our cheque at 105
:41:26. > :41:31.kilometres, just over 2.5 hours of racing in his legs now. About an
:41:32. > :41:36.hour and a half of racing still to go. So, in the next minute or so, we
:41:37. > :41:46.will be able to see where everybody is on the road at the moment. Hard,
:41:47. > :41:49.hard race developing here. is on the road at the moment. Hard,
:41:50. > :41:53.been no moment of rest at all. At is on the road at the moment. Hard,
:41:54. > :42:12.compared to ten minutes ago. these riders. Again, just having a
:42:13. > :42:21.look back through that chase group, David Millar, probably about 12,

:43:57. > :44:00.Ten seconds gained, Nathan Haas just did not think it was worth it in the
:44:01. > :44:05.end. He decided to back off and wait for the peloton. It was just too
:44:06. > :44:09.hard to stay out there. However he was doing his team-mates a favour,
:44:10. > :44:14.as they did not have to do any of the chasing. But they were losing
:44:15. > :44:16.ground over Pete Kennaugh, because Archibold is not as good on the
:44:17. > :44:39.front as Hepburn. gained another ten seconds with the
:44:40. > :44:50.destruction caused in the rest of the field. It's been incredible. A
:44:51. > :45:01.real hard man to stay out here. Committed from the gun. Someone has
:45:02. > :45:10.a puncture. Yes, it is Tuft. Looks as if he needs some attention.

:46:15. > :46:19.it's doing any favours because he wasn't getting much of an inroads
:46:20. > :46:27.before. I think they need to but more than one man to the task at a
:46:28. > :46:32.time. Kennaugh has got to be feeling it now. The lead still hasn't budged
:46:33. > :46:41.yet. What an incredible final quarter of the race we're going to
:46:42. > :46:51.have. 24 men left chasing him now. This is an unbelievable effort from
:46:52. > :46:58.the rider from the isle of man. Just over 60 kilometres remaining now. He

:47:27. > :47:30.got a problem now with a break robbing so he's adjusting that but,
:47:31. > :47:38.to be honest, I think he's had enough. I think his race is pretty

:48:10. > :48:16.up it. At least it's not long. It's not very pleasant, this client,
:48:17. > :48:27.especially as the race goes on. -- this climb. Certainly got plenty of
:48:28. > :48:34.airtime for the Manx jersey. Not one of the more stylish kits out there,
:48:35. > :48:57.it must be said. An indication from that angle of how steep it is.
:48:58. > :49:04.Here come the chasers. Are they making inroads yet, just inside the
:49:05. > :49:08.last 60 kilometres? Across the top of Buchanan Street, along George
:49:09. > :49:15.Street. This is Shane Archibald on the front yet again. Caleb Ewan is
:49:16. > :49:17.right on his wheel for Australia. One or two slight gaps threatening
:49:18. > :49:28.to open up as they are strung out. The pressure is starting to tell
:49:29. > :49:36.we've seen a view fractures in this group. I'm wondering whether that is

:49:44. > :49:51.confirmation of that. It looks to me that it is him. He is Montrose
:49:52. > :49:52.Street. Archbold digging in. He's got Henderson, Scully and Jack Bauer
:49:53. > :50:10.as team-mates here. That's looking really hard work now.
:50:11. > :50:15.A really difficult climb. Geraint Thomas is moving through and I lot
:50:16. > :50:19.of riders are... That was David Millar there towards the back of
:50:20. > :50:24.that group in the blue. That doesn't look good for him. Tuft off the
:50:25. > :50:28.back. Perhaps the race was a bit physical for him today. He's not
:50:29. > :50:36.going to be able to get back on the peloton at this late stage.
:50:37. > :50:49.Back with the leader, Peter Kennaugh. What a ride from him! 168

:50:57. > :51:03.I wonder what he was thinking at the start of this move compared to what
:51:04. > :51:07.he's thinking now! It's inside that 50 kilometre mark you need to get,
:51:08. > :51:14.then it feels like you're on the downhill run home. It looks to me as
:51:15. > :51:20.if that is Jack Bauer about third behind Archibald. He's really
:51:21. > :51:29.putting the pressure on. Everybody else's scurrying for wheels. They're
:51:30. > :51:33.not definitive gaps forming behind but he's putting the pressure on.
:51:34. > :51:38.He's checking back and teen owes it so he isn't only closing the gap on
:51:39. > :51:44.Peter Kennaugh but I think he is putting the whole remainder of the
:51:45. > :51:51.field under pressure. The last time that we had was 1.59. It may be
:51:52. > :51:56.different, the next one we get. Archibald still on the front, just
:51:57. > :52:01.having a look at who is behind. For weights is there, Moses is still
:52:02. > :52:06.there. Luke Rowe I can see, Geraint Thomas as well. The last third of
:52:07. > :52:16.the race now. Thomas as well. The last third of
:52:17. > :52:18.rhythm again. We'll be getting some time checks to
:52:19. > :52:22.rhythm again. We'll be getting some behind with a bit of extra energy
:52:23. > :52:28.being injected by New Zealand. What does that mean for Peter Kennaugh?
:52:29. > :52:36.112 colour metres when he comes back round to the line this time. --
:52:37. > :52:41.kilometres. I wonder how long Archibald is going to be able to
:52:42. > :52:46.keep this kind of power. He seems committed to doing a team role, not
:52:47. > :52:53.expected to be here very long at all. Doing his bit for Jack
:52:54. > :52:55.expected to be here very long at and, presumably, for Henderson. He's
:52:56. > :53:06.a fast man. If it came down to a small group, you wouldn't
:53:07. > :53:17.In towards the finish once again. Sadly, the weather continues to
:53:18. > :53:24.refuse to play ball. We have to say, it's making for a spectacular
:53:25. > :53:28.race. Absolutely! I think all of the crowds lining the route here haven't
:53:29. > :53:31.budged despite the weather and they appreciate the fact that it's making
:53:32. > :53:37.a superb spectacle and we will find a worthy winner. Look at this
:53:38. > :53:44.stupendous effort from Peter Kennaugh of the Isle of Man. Here he
:53:45. > :53:54.goes, still in the lead. 112 kilometres in the bag. Certainly not
:53:55. > :53:58.looking happy now, is he? They're not quite into the finishing
:53:59. > :54:02.straight. They've got a couple of right-hand turns to come. Archibald
:54:03. > :54:08.on the front. Caleb Ewan is there, Jack Bauer, Luke Rowe, Moses. It's a
:54:09. > :54:13.very small group. David Millar is still there for Scotland. And the
:54:14. > :54:17.cars behind indicate there is a bigger gap for them to spot in.
:54:18. > :54:22.It might be Dan Craven on the back. They've reduced in numbers and will
:54:23. > :54:31.get confirmation in less than a minute now. This really has whittled
:54:32. > :54:34.it down to the final selection. The final chase group. Archibald is
:54:35. > :54:40.absolutely burying himself in pursuit of Kennaugh. He's brought
:54:41. > :54:49.the gap right down now. The races on in a big way. Peter Kennaugh's lead
:54:50. > :54:52.is under threat about the look we saw on his face means he knows the
:54:53. > :54:58.chase is now on behind him. Suddenly, it's a very hungry pack
:54:59. > :55:10.here. It's half a minute he's lost. Mostly thanks to the efforts of
:55:11. > :55:14.Shane Archbold. 14 riders remaining in this chase group and all the
:55:15. > :55:24.damage done by Archbold in the last five kilometres. Our loan leader has
:55:25. > :55:29.seen a sizeable bite taken out of his advantage for the first time
:55:30. > :55:34.this afternoon. This is going to be a desperate struggle now.
:55:35. > :55:39.JASON MOHAMMAD: Just away from the men's road race to bring you a bit
:55:40. > :55:42.of breaking bronze medal news. Another bronze medal for England.
:55:43. > :55:48.James Willstrop and Daryl Selby have just beaten their Scottish opponent
:55:49. > :55:52.in the men's doubles bronze medal match in the squash. Starting over
:55:53. > :55:57.on BBC Three now, the mixed doubles gold medal match. England's Peter

:56:03. > :56:09.but they go for gold after a comfortable semifinal win over New
:56:10. > :56:13.Zealand. That is live on BBC Three right now, the mixed doubles gold
:56:14. > :56:20.medal match. Will it be another gold medal for England, with Peter Barker
:56:21. > :56:24.and Alison Waters? COMMENTATOR: Welcome back, and an
:56:25. > :56:29.untimely bike change required for Simon Clarke, one of the key runners
:56:30. > :56:33.for Australia. He's back on his bike and in the race but that main chase
:56:34. > :56:36.group has disappeared up off the road now. He's with Sean Downey from
:56:37. > :56:46.Northern Ireland road now. He's with Sean Downey from
:56:47. > :56:50.Nathan Haas now past Clark and Downey off the back of the chasers.
:56:51. > :56:56.He's in good company. He's got some firepower there. The three of them
:56:57. > :57:00.could get back on here. They've got a very fast bike change. Very
:57:01. > :57:06.unfortunate for Australia - they've had several problems in this race.
:57:07. > :57:06.They've tried to do everything they can to influence the
:57:07. > :57:14.good fortune hasn't been there so far. Riding up Argyle Street, the
:57:15. > :57:19.chasers, as they try to get back with the chasing group. Peter
:57:20. > :57:26.Kennaugh now seeing his lead eaten into. It was roughly one
:57:27. > :57:31.Kennaugh now seeing his lead eaten for a long time. Mark Cavendish
:57:32. > :57:35.handing out some much-needed energy gels. As the gap comes
:57:36. > :57:43.handing out some much-needed energy coming from Cavendish to his fellow
:57:44. > :57:48.countryman. He'll certainly be giving encouragement now. He's ugly
:57:49. > :57:51.committed to his move. There's not a lot else you can do. There isn't a
:57:52. > :57:56.great deal to talk about. He's just got to get his head down and do
:57:57. > :57:59.everything he can because if he's caught, surely he won't have enough
:58:00. > :58:02.legs left to get involved in the action. Quite a debate between the
:58:03. > :58:14.pair of them. That's why these moves are so
:58:15. > :58:20.incredibly rare. They do or die - you either pull it off, and it's a
:58:21. > :58:26.heroic effort, and if not you just can't have any legs to get back
:58:27. > :58:30.involved with the action. They've decided behind that the best way to
:58:31. > :58:36.do it is to attack and New Zealand have set this up. It looks like Jack
:58:37. > :58:39.Bauer is having a go for it. It is Jack Bauer for New Zealand, the
:58:40. > :58:44.rider we were talking about earlier, Jack Bauer for New Zealand, the
:58:45. > :58:49.who came so close to the stage win in the Tour de France a few weeks
:58:50. > :58:54.ago. Look at the distant he's put into this group. He is being chased
:58:55. > :58:59.down by one of the Australian riders but he's done an awful lot of
:59:00. > :59:03.damage. There's some damage. Has blown his old tools off in doing the
:59:04. > :59:08.chasing in the last 15 or 20 minutes. We wondered how long that
:59:09. > :59:16.could last. It was a great effort on behalf of his team from Archbold.
:59:17. > :59:20.We're back with Peter Kennaugh. It's been fascinating tactically to watch
:59:21. > :59:25.how different teams have dealt with this move of Peter Kennaugh. No
:59:26. > :59:29.matter how far out he went, he had to be regulated. It was the
:59:30. > :59:34.Australians who decided it was their job and everybody left them to it
:59:35. > :59:37.but the gap has remained quite sizeable. As the kilometres
:59:38. > :59:41.come-down, the tactic of just letting the Australians grind away
:59:42. > :59:45.on the front wasn't going to be enough. The race is under way now
:59:46. > :59:52.and we are going to see more and more attack and Jack Bauer has got
:59:53. > :59:54.the firepower to stay out there. He looked so powerful when he launched
:59:55. > :00:00.the attack. We haven't seen his face at the front. He looks absolutely
:00:01. > :00:11.full of beans. He's been training for this for a month. A beautiful
:00:12. > :00:19.solo attack. Let's see what's happening behind him. We saw that
:00:20. > :00:24.one of the Australian riders was in the distance, trying to shadow him.
:00:25. > :00:27.I don't harmony more riders they have left. Simon Clarke would've
:00:28. > :00:31.been the first we expected but he was just getting back on after that
:00:32. > :00:38.mechanical he had an we're not even sure if got back in contact. He will
:00:39. > :00:43.be familiar to home-based bike riding fans because he raced in a
:00:44. > :00:47.couple of seasons in 2010 and 2011 in the UK and has form in charming
:00:48. > :00:51.chip road races. He was 10th in London in the Olympic Games road
:00:52. > :01:05.race. And now we are looking at Simon Clarke.
:01:06. > :01:11.Well, that is a shame for the Australians, because Simon Clarke's
:01:12. > :01:13.Well, that is a shame for the form looked really good, and they
:01:14. > :01:22.would have been using him at this stage of the race to keep one does
:01:23. > :01:29.on breakaway attempts. -- to keep one eye on breakaway attempts. Just
:01:30. > :01:35.stuck in the traffic, as the pace has gone up, he is not able to move
:01:36. > :01:41.forward. In fact, the traffic is actually in his way now. Well, this
:01:42. > :01:45.is a bit of a mess. Sometimes it is great to be among the cars,
:01:46. > :01:50.sometimes not. Well, they should be watching the riders. When a rider
:01:51. > :02:00.gets that close, the car should instantly pull out of the way.
:02:01. > :02:07.Really grinding out the pace now, it is getting harder and harder every
:02:08. > :02:19.lap. Just 20 riders behind him now. And only one minute 15 behind, at
:02:20. > :02:29.our last check. You can probably feel himself starting to slow now.
:02:30. > :02:33.You can see it is coming right down. If you are going to have a break and
:02:34. > :02:39.ease up, this would be the time to do it. He could stay with Bauer, he
:02:40. > :02:43.could easily outsprint him, but he could not get involved in the action
:02:44. > :02:49.of the group, with people who have not been working thus far. This is
:02:50. > :02:54.when sure, who was calling for support. Simon Clarke making the
:02:55. > :03:04.move, having rejoined the group! Simon Clarke, on the right-hand side
:03:05. > :03:10.of the road. Well, this race is really starting to get lively. Yes,
:03:11. > :03:13.Renshaw has got a problem. I think he needs a new front wheel. I think
:03:14. > :03:17.they are telling him he needs a new front wheel. I think
:03:18. > :03:23.got something compatible for him. He certainly was not happy. No sign of
:03:24. > :03:29.his own service vehicle, probably stuck back in the traffic. Very
:03:30. > :03:33.unusual that the team car cannot get there. There are only 20-odd people
:03:34. > :03:43.left in the race, and he is the star man for the team. Here we go. This
:03:44. > :03:44.is it. Pete Kennaugh's ride out in the front is about to come to an
:03:45. > :03:49.end. He is about to have company. the front is about to come to an
:03:50. > :03:53.Geraint Thomas! Geraint Thomas, with the front is about to come to an
:03:54. > :03:58.the blue on his helmet. Jack Bauer is also there. Three of them, about
:03:59. > :04:03.to join Pete Kennaugh at the front. is also there. Three of them, about
:04:04. > :04:07.Well, that was probably the conversation he was having with Mark
:04:08. > :04:14.Cavendish - I am completely spent, what should I do, maybe I should
:04:15. > :04:15.drop back and join the team? Geraint Thomas of course not riding for the
:04:16. > :04:21.same country, but they are both on Thomas of course not riding for the
:04:22. > :04:28.the same professional team. They are not across to him yet, but the
:04:29. > :04:35.writing is very much on the wall. A brief respite afforded here by
:04:36. > :04:45.Gibson Street. You can see the chasers rapidly closing in.
:04:46. > :04:51.CHRIS BOARDMAN: We saw on the last check that Bauer was 13 seconds
:04:52. > :04:57.behind. Russell Downing is alone and chasing them. We have got Scott
:04:58. > :05:02.Thwaites, Thomas and Bauer, the ones that we can see in the distance. So
:05:03. > :05:15.these are the four that will be in contention. Russell Downing is a
:05:16. > :05:19.further 30 seconds back. It is a very strong group, and I suspect
:05:20. > :05:24.this is the four that we will see contest in the medals. I cannot
:05:25. > :05:28.believe that Pete Kennaugh can get himself back together after the
:05:29. > :05:33.effort he has just made, and contest a sprint with these guys. Still time
:05:34. > :05:40.for the rest to get back on terms, though. Thomas, clearly going really
:05:41. > :05:47.well after the Tour de France. He finished 22nd overall, and he was
:05:48. > :05:51.not riding for himself over there. Scott Thwaites struggling on the
:05:52. > :05:56.back there, but he is in some fantastic company. Right Thomas
:05:57. > :06:01.looks right at home in these conditions. Thomas loves this. The
:06:02. > :06:10.only thing which is missing is more cobbles! Stage five of the Tour de
:06:11. > :06:12.France, this is what he looked like, as he was guiding Richie Porte
:06:13. > :06:17.across the cobblestones of northern France. Well, it was Thomas who
:06:18. > :06:26.really took the initiative that day, once Chris Froome had hit the deck.
:06:27. > :06:31.We are going to see little groups of people trying to get back on terms.
:06:32. > :06:35.You need to look at people and decide, have they got a reason to
:06:36. > :06:38.work with me? And I do not think they have.
:06:39. > :06:43.work with me? And I do not think there. A terrible day for Australia,
:06:44. > :07:09.everything has gone wrong for them - mechanicals, crashes...
:07:10. > :07:19.Tom Scully looks absolutely spent. So does David Millar. . It does not
:07:20. > :07:31.look like it will be a golden sunset to David Millar's career. That was a
:07:32. > :07:34.fast selection, wasn't it you know Kennaugh is going to sit on the back
:07:35. > :07:41.now, he has got nothing to contribute. But it is his best
:07:42. > :07:46.chance of staying in some sort of contention. I don't think anybody
:07:47. > :07:50.will expect him to work, they could not rightfully shout at him, as he
:07:51. > :07:55.has been out there on his own for more than two thirds of this race
:07:56. > :08:00.and! But Geraint Thomas, well, this is a perfect is issued for him to be
:08:01. > :08:11.in. For me, probably the favourite in this group, followed by Bauer.
:08:12. > :08:15.This is going to be fascinating, with 46.5 kilometres still to go
:08:16. > :08:16.here on the streets of Glasgow. The weather not really showing any sign
:08:17. > :08:23.of improvement. I do not think it weather not really showing any sign
:08:24. > :08:27.a done deal, though. There are some classy riders who have just got left
:08:28. > :08:37.behind, for various reasons. We could see Renshaw get back on terms.
:08:38. > :08:44.He lost nearly a minute with his mechanical problem I thought we
:08:45. > :08:49.might see him get together with his team-mate Clarke, but we have not
:08:50. > :09:01.seen that yet. Scott Davies of Wales just ahead of him. In fact, no, I do
:09:02. > :09:10.not think he has got ANY Australians in front of him now. That is Clarke
:09:11. > :09:13.on the front of that group, I think it is Dan Craven in second place,
:09:14. > :09:18.and Renshaw just tagging onto the back. And that fuzzy blob is the
:09:19. > :09:26.leading group of four. The leading group has got two Australian
:09:27. > :09:32.jerseys, which will reduce everybody else's desire to want to work with
:09:33. > :09:36.them. Secondly, the other guys are there because they did not have the
:09:37. > :09:41.legs, whereas Renshaw and Clarke are there because of mechanical
:09:42. > :09:46.reasons. Bauer looked very, very strong in that attack. He is still
:09:47. > :09:52.pushing a fairly low gear, which would indicate he has still got
:09:53. > :10:03.plenty left. This hill will give us an indication. Well, I think we know
:10:04. > :10:08.who is not feeling fresh. Oh, he cannot do it, he cannot go with
:10:09. > :10:13.them. Look at the pain etched on his face now. It has been an epic ride
:10:14. > :10:19.from Pete Kennaugh, but he is losing touch, finally overhauled. Had a
:10:20. > :10:27.fantastic season, taking that women in the Tour of Austria. But this was
:10:28. > :10:31.just one race too far. It was a huge effort he made, very unusual
:10:32. > :10:35.tactics, but that was his one card, and he has played it today. And he
:10:36. > :10:40.will leave the Commonwealth Games with a silver medal from the track.
:10:41. > :10:46.The gold will not materialise this time. That jersey from the Isle of
:10:47. > :10:50.Man was on the front for so long to day. That was the moment I think
:10:51. > :10:55.where he watched the medals riding away from him. I think in his heart
:10:56. > :11:04.of hearts, when he spoke to Mark Cavendish a few kilometres ago, he
:11:05. > :11:08.knew it was all over. Well, is this the final selection for the medals?
:11:09. > :11:20.Well, the next check I think will tell us. Because Renshaw and Clarke
:11:21. > :11:24.certainly have not given up. In about three or four minutes, they
:11:25. > :11:28.will be back at the finish line and we will be able to get a time check.
:11:29. > :11:32.But all three of them are riding well together. They have all got a
:11:33. > :11:36.reason to ride now, they are all guaranteed a medal, if they stay
:11:37. > :11:44.away, and that is a big motivation. Meanwhile, a little bit further
:11:45. > :12:01.back... Is that Clarke? No, I do not think it is. I think it might be
:12:02. > :12:09.Caleb Ewan. Certainly driving hard. Yes, it is, it is Ewan, from
:12:10. > :12:21.Australia, and he is motoring now. Trying to get up into that group of
:12:22. > :12:25.three. Pete Kennaugh might give him a little bit of help, but there is
:12:26. > :12:32.not a great deal he can do now. Straight past him. Kennaugh has
:12:33. > :12:43.decided he has had enough for the day. Coming up into London Road,
:12:44. > :12:47.heading towards Glasgow Green again. I think Ewan has realised that if he
:12:48. > :12:57.does not make a move now, those medals will disappear into the
:12:58. > :13:00.distance, and that will be it. Australia have been doing all the
:13:01. > :13:06.racing today, and they have been in all the mishaps as well - crashes,
:13:07. > :13:11.punctures, mechanicals, it has just fallen apart around them. They have
:13:12. > :13:12.got three riders left but they are constantly playing catch-up because
:13:13. > :13:19.of the misfortune they have had. If constantly playing catch-up because
:13:20. > :13:21.Ewan can get into that group, it changes the dynamic - he is a fast
:13:22. > :13:36.finisher. They have got to keep taking on the
:13:37. > :13:59.fuel. pacemaking equally now. They all
:14:00. > :14:00.know there is a reward at the end for them, it is just a question of
:14:01. > :14:10.know there is a reward at the end which colour, if they can stay away.
:14:11. > :14:15.23 seconds. That is a healthy gap. It is a long way for one rider to
:14:16. > :14:22.close against three. I am not sure that is 23 seconds, though. It is
:14:23. > :14:31.getting foreshortened by our camera. He is driving to come across. Caleb
:14:32. > :14:37.Ewan working so hard to try and reduce the deficit and get into the
:14:38. > :14:43.leading group. He is having to expend a lot of energy to do so.
:14:44. > :14:50.Well, certainly this is not definitive at the moment. I wonder
:14:51. > :14:56.if the Australian team has spoken. They were working for Renshaw,
:14:57. > :15:02.but... Oh, that is a disaster. That is a bit of a disaster for Bauer,
:15:03. > :15:07.the whole lot went down on the floor. Thomas might have lost his
:15:08. > :15:11.feed. But luckily the cars will be able to come up behind them, and
:15:12. > :15:25.they should be able to get a feed. Tough, tough race.
:15:26. > :15:30.pace, 50 kilometres an hour, and it's very difficult to grab a bottle
:15:31. > :15:33.with cold hands. On the Tour de France they have a neutral motorbike
:15:34. > :15:38.with bottles on that goes around the riders. It's worth just taking a
:15:39. > :15:42.couple of kilometres off your post to make sure you can get the
:15:43. > :15:48.bottle. So important at this stage of the race. You can see how tough
:15:49. > :15:51.the effort is. I don't think he's going to bridge the gap. He looked
:15:52. > :15:58.like he'd gone for an all-out effort to try to get across. Ross Downing
:15:59. > :16:02.riding strongly in fifth place. Luke Rowe and Tom Moses coming through.
:16:03. > :16:09.There's nobody with the motivation to get across, is there? They've all
:16:10. > :16:15.got a team-mate upfront. These were the two danger men, for sure.
:16:16. > :16:22.They're a fair way back, just over one minute back to Mark Renshaw and
:16:23. > :16:28.Greg Henderson. Dan Craven has got himself a ride with Europe car. It
:16:29. > :16:34.sounded like somebody cropped into the barriers there. It's Dan Craven
:16:35. > :16:37.who has gone into the barriers. Looks as if he's OK. Hopefully the
:16:38. > :16:41.bike is nice and straight and he can get back on. It's so easy when
:16:42. > :16:46.you're so fatigued to make a small mistake for top the road surface is
:16:47. > :16:52.not forgiving at all. That was a big club in the background. Not even
:16:53. > :16:57.able to get hold of a bottle now. Hopefully they can get something
:16:58. > :16:59.from the car. Still an amount of racing to do. Only 15 of them
:17:00. > :17:06.from the car. Still an amount of gone over the line up to now. That
:17:07. > :17:07.covers over three minutes. Tom Sterling is the last for New
:17:08. > :17:13.Zealand. These riders are Sterling is the last for New
:17:14. > :17:18.be absolutely empty by the time they get to the finishing line. Along
:17:19. > :17:22.Argyle Street they go. Buchanan Street waits, the right-hand turn
:17:23. > :17:27.not far away. Geraint Thomas in the front for Wales. Jack Bauer of New
:17:28. > :17:30.Zealand in second place and Scott Thwaites for England in third. Here
:17:31. > :17:36.is Caleb Ewan from Australia. He hasn't given up the chase. He
:17:37. > :17:39.hasn't. He's absolutely driving over this smooth surface here.
:17:40. > :17:43.Desperately trying to get back on terms and even if he does, this is
:17:44. > :17:49.going to cost him a huge amount of energy. Half a minute is a long way
:17:50. > :17:53.to close on a course like this. A good ride, this, from a very highly
:17:54. > :18:00.thought of young man of just 20 years. A big name for the future in
:18:01. > :18:06.Australian cycling, Caleb Ewan. Turns onto Buchanan Street as
:18:07. > :18:09.Australian cycling, Caleb Ewan. three turn off onto the main road.
:18:10. > :18:12.Scott Thwaites is probably the best three turn off onto the main road.
:18:13. > :18:17.calibre but I don't think he can match the out and out power of
:18:18. > :18:19.Geraint Thomas. Jack Bauer is a good ride and is clearly in great shape
:18:20. > :18:19.after the Geraint Thomas. Jack Bauer is a good
:18:20. > :18:23.ride and is clearly in Tour Geraint Thomas. Jack Bauer is a good
:18:24. > :18:33.attacking before the line between these three. An excellent finish to
:18:34. > :18:38.this race, it promises. We haven't had them in bliss 1986. New Zealand
:18:39. > :18:46.have had three previous winners but not since 1994. Never had a Welsh
:18:47. > :18:51.gold medallist on two wheels in the common wealth games. Caleb Ewan can
:18:52. > :18:54.see them now but it is so near, so far. It must be depressing that they
:18:55. > :19:00.are letting people cross the road between you. He's committed now.
:19:01. > :19:10.This is all he can do. The best hope at the moment for Australia. Inside
:19:11. > :19:20.the last 40 kilometres of the race. Renshaw and Clark at 1.05 minutes. I
:19:21. > :19:23.wonder if he knows the situation of his team-mates because he might be
:19:24. > :19:27.better off waiting for them so they can close of the gap as a three.
:19:28. > :19:30.Looks like he's fully committed to the effort. Is Thomas at front.
:19:31. > :19:33.Already got the effort. Is Thomas at front.
:19:34. > :19:37.week in the time trial. I wonder what sort of form he will bring with
:19:38. > :19:42.him from the back end of the Tour de France. We got some idea when he
:19:43. > :19:48.decided to go for it. It didn't go well for the tedium and the plans
:19:49. > :19:53.went wrong. -- for the team. The plans went wrong in the first week.
:19:54. > :19:58.They tried to salvage it with a plan B but that didn't work and then they
:19:59. > :20:01.got to the stage and it couldn't be finished off. They left
:20:02. > :20:02.empty-handed. They fought hard in the time trial. It looked like he
:20:03. > :20:10.empty-handed. They fought hard in was going to win it until the last
:20:11. > :20:18.couple of kilometres. Still got the motivation to fight his way through.
:20:19. > :20:25.Caleb Ewan still shouting for all his worth. I'm not sure how much
:20:26. > :20:34.he's eating into the advantage held by the leading three. Just 29
:20:35. > :20:36.he's eating into the advantage held left in this race in total. Only 16
:20:37. > :20:39.of the starters have crossed the finishing line up to now. In bits
:20:40. > :21:00.and pieces. A little bit further back. Here is
:21:01. > :21:10.Mark Renshaw. Is that Henderson with them? It looks like Greg Henderson
:21:11. > :21:16.who was just off your screen. Simon Clarke and Mark Renshaw is highly
:21:17. > :21:21.fancied for the gold medal. Team-mates with Mark Cavendish
:21:22. > :21:26.during the season. Hoping to have an easier ride, easier in inverted
:21:27. > :21:31.commas. I'm not sure if he was protecting a motorbike rider there.
:21:32. > :21:34.But it was parked in personally the wrong place just at the exit of the
:21:35. > :21:38.corner. Just to confirm, indeed it was Greg Henderson in the black for
:21:39. > :21:43.New Zealand there with the two Australians. He's the only one who
:21:44. > :21:48.is tactically in a good position. He can sit on the two Australians.
:21:49. > :21:52.is tactically in a good position. He they do make it back, Australia have
:21:53. > :21:56.a good card they do make it back, Australia have
:21:57. > :22:03.potentially two players in the game for New Zealand. I can't think that
:22:04. > :22:10.Ewan is not playing the best tactics here. I think he should have sat up
:22:11. > :22:15.and waited for his team-mates. He's stuck in No Man's Land and being
:22:16. > :22:18.chased by his own team-mates. If he dropped back he could have made a
:22:19. > :22:23.group of three together and would be in a better position. He's only
:22:24. > :22:27.losing ground. He's blowing a gasket and I'm not sure to what purpose it
:22:28. > :22:32.will prove to be. Here we are with Thomas on the front, Bauer second
:22:33. > :22:35.and Thwaites on the inside. The job is done for Nathan Haas of
:22:36. > :22:42.Australia. He had a little dip off the front once they decided to try
:22:43. > :22:51.to begin to real Peter Kennaugh grin. It became clear when Archbold
:22:52. > :22:57.went to the front and real Tim in reasonably easily, he didn't have
:22:58. > :23:02.anything left to contribute. Scott Thwaites as won couple of titles in
:23:03. > :23:08.his career. The Englishman is just taking on an energy gel. He's the
:23:09. > :23:20.national circuit race champion from a couple of years back.
:23:21. > :23:30.Still chugging away, Caleb Ewan. I don't know whether he's getting any
:23:31. > :23:34.communication from the team at all. It's all right for us watching the
:23:35. > :23:36.TV getting time checks and being able to flip between cameras but if
:23:37. > :23:41.he's not getting the information from the vehicles, he hasn't got a
:23:42. > :23:54.radio and doesn't know he is the last Australian on the road.
:23:55. > :24:04.The leaders are now on to great George Street. The furthest point of
:24:05. > :24:09.the circuit geographically, six kilometres into the lap. A
:24:10. > :24:11.discussion going on at the back. I think they are working reasonably
:24:12. > :24:16.well together. They don't have to do too much. As long as
:24:17. > :24:21.well together. They don't have to do amount each, it will be enough to
:24:22. > :24:25.hold off Ewan the rest. They do need to keep working. 36 kilometres to
:24:26. > :24:29.go. Too far for an individual attack, I think. The rider for Wales
:24:30. > :24:32.is attack, I think. The rider for Wales
:24:33. > :24:41.tagging along. attack, I think. The rider for Wales
:24:42. > :24:51.the race. They will just be watching each other now, I think.
:24:52. > :24:58.phases of the race. First it's just trying to
:24:59. > :24:58.phases of the race. First it's just temporary allies to try to force the
:24:59. > :25:04.gap to happen, then they become your temporary allies to try to force the
:25:05. > :25:08.enemies and it just keeps moving all the time. Different strategies and
:25:09. > :25:13.different path this. So many decisions and calculations to make
:25:14. > :25:15.when you are out there on the bike. 35 kilometres to go and I think
:25:16. > :25:22.they'll be happy with the starters quote for a while. Always difficult
:25:23. > :25:27.when you're increasingly physically and mentally tired. Ewan is out
:25:28. > :25:32.there in No Man's and mentally tired. Ewan is out
:25:33. > :25:38.like he will be caught. That will be Ross Downing leading the chase,
:25:39. > :25:41.presumably. The wisest course of action for Ewan would be perhaps to
:25:42. > :25:49.just use up slightly and have some company. We are just through the
:25:50. > :26:00.133, to check, nearly three hours and 20 minutes of racing done. Caleb
:26:01. > :26:04.Ewan is 49 seconds in arrears and Downing, Luke Rowe and Peter
:26:05. > :26:13.Kennaugh are in front. Just behind, Renshaw and Henderson. Dan Craven
:26:14. > :26:17.back intends. No word on Simon Clarke, who we thought was with Mark
:26:18. > :26:26.Renshaw but we're not getting a timing for him. Pick people are just
:26:27. > :26:30.running out of fuel and dropping out of the race. An incredibly hard day
:26:31. > :26:35.and there's no way to save energy for the end. Everybody is working
:26:36. > :26:39.almost the same, whether at the back or the front. We didn't think it
:26:40. > :26:44.would splinter quite as much as this - or I didn't. I thought we'd be
:26:45. > :26:47.attacking this stage from a group of 20 or 30. Making quite a spectacle
:26:48. > :26:51.on the streets of 20 or 30. Making quite a spectacle
:26:52. > :26:55.final day of the Commonwealth Games. But the leading three as they head
:26:56. > :27:01.yet again through Park Circus. 12 laps of this 14 kilometres circuit.
:27:02. > :27:06.I'm pretty certain, looking at the make-up of these groups, it won't
:27:07. > :27:09.come back together. I think we're looking at the medals here. It's
:27:10. > :27:13.just a question of who gets which colour or, indeed, if they have a
:27:14. > :27:19.mechanical problem in these conditions, that would be enough to
:27:20. > :27:21.see them caught by the group behind. A puncture now would be
:27:22. > :27:30.heartbreaking for one of these three. Downing and Luke Rowe, I'm
:27:31. > :27:33.not sure what their motivation is to chase because they've already got
:27:34. > :27:34.team-mates in the lead, in middle positions, and good team-mates as
:27:35. > :27:39.well. I think Kennaugh is just positions, and good team-mates as
:27:40. > :27:46.hanging on to that group for as long as he can after that huge effort
:27:47. > :27:50.that he's put in. Renshaw and Henderson Art one and a half minutes
:27:51. > :27:59.behind and I think that is too big a gap for them to pull back now.
:28:00. > :28:04.When will the attacking Starr? I can't believe these three will want
:28:05. > :28:10.to go all the way to the line. Into Souchiehall Street. Scott Thwaites,
:28:11. > :28:13.the 24-year-old Yorkshire and, doing a turn on the front. Second season
:28:14. > :28:27.with his team. Riding really strongly. We saw what
:28:28. > :28:33.form Bauer had in the Tour de France and we know he's got good legs.
:28:34. > :28:36.Geraint Thomas as well. Thomas twice a bronze medallist in the
:28:37. > :28:39.Commonwealth Games. He had a bronze a few years back on the track,
:28:40. > :28:44.Commonwealth Games. He had a bronze well. That was in Melbourne. A win
:28:45. > :28:50.in the points race as well as the individual time trial on Thursday
:28:51. > :28:56.here. We really are getting to the business end of this now. Bauer
:28:57. > :29:00.looks the freshest of the three, physically. Quite smooth, not
:29:01. > :29:07.rocking about, still quite low, happy climbing seated. We'll have a
:29:08. > :29:13.good indication of the pecking order. You never know with Thomas.
:29:14. > :29:26.He's a top rider. Certainly not. The job done for Wales for Owen Coyle.
:29:27. > :29:31.Just out of the medals in a couple of races. Very unlucky. Two fourth
:29:32. > :29:42.place finishes but hopefully a lot more to come from him in the years
:29:43. > :29:46.ahead. Just looking back now, with Bauer on
:29:47. > :29:53.the back of the leading three. Are we going to see an early attack? If
:29:54. > :29:55.we do, I think it will probably happen on this next climb. Still
:29:56. > :30:02.quite a long way to go. It happen on this next climb. Still
:30:03. > :30:08.we are into that phase of the race now, with such a state of fatigue,
:30:09. > :30:13.with so few riders left to chase, if anybody manages to get away now, who
:30:14. > :30:21.is going to bring them back? And leaving it to the last lap can be
:30:22. > :30:28.quite dangerous. Even if you are completely finished, if you are
:30:29. > :30:33.close enough to the finish, you can dig that little bit deeper. Such a
:30:34. > :30:38.strong team coming into this event, Australia, but it has utterly fallen
:30:39. > :30:48.apart. Montrose Street again, and here goes Scott Thwaites, putting a
:30:49. > :30:58.bit of pressure on on the climb. Thomas looks quite good to me. Bauer
:30:59. > :31:04.gritting his teeth. I suspect Thwaites got around the corner
:31:05. > :31:07.first, so he can control the pace. None of them looking to be overly
:31:08. > :31:15.tested by that. All of them still looking good. Here is the chaser,
:31:16. > :31:20.Caleb Ewan, from Australia. He is now a long way behind, more than a
:31:21. > :31:31.minute back. He is heading for fourth place at best here. Could
:31:32. > :31:48.still get swept up fourth place at best here. Could
:31:49. > :31:52.Rowe, and possibly Pete Kennaugh. Interesting to know why he is
:31:53. > :31:56.driving, with a team-mate in a winning position. Maybe they will
:31:57. > :32:04.just sweep up Ewan and take it from there.
:32:05. > :32:18.Twice more they will have to face this Hill. The side on camera angle
:32:19. > :32:29.gives you an idea of how tough it is. They made it look so easy for
:32:30. > :32:32.the first portion of the race. It looks as if Simon Clarke and Mark
:32:33. > :32:46.Renshaw are going to get back onto this little chase group. Either it
:32:47. > :32:48.was Clarke who had a bike change, he might have lost his transponder,
:32:49. > :32:57.which might have affected the readings. The only people with a
:32:58. > :33:04.rationale to chase here are the Australians. So this should be the
:33:05. > :33:09.point where downing and Rowe sit up and let the Australians get on with
:33:10. > :33:12.it, otherwise, they will be chasing down their own team-mates, with
:33:13. > :33:23.people who can beat them in the spring. -- in the sprint.
:33:24. > :33:27.people who can beat them in the three are working pretty well
:33:28. > :33:32.together. All three of them are good, solid bike riders. Certainly
:33:33. > :33:36.Bauer and Thomas have spent the last three weeks together. There is a lot
:33:37. > :33:40.of respect within the Tour de France peloton, it is almost like becoming
:33:41. > :33:43.part of a club if you make it through that race. You have had
:33:44. > :33:48.shared suffering, shared experiences, they will talk during
:33:49. > :33:53.the day, passing the time of day, and they will work well together.
:33:54. > :34:03.Until it is time to attack each other, of course! Bauer now doing
:34:04. > :34:07.his turn on the front. Thwaites is doing the ride of the day, he looks
:34:08. > :34:14.totally at home in this company, and these are some of the best bike
:34:15. > :34:26.riders in the world. Thwaites is in good company. The road is completely
:34:27. > :34:30.flooded as they go into this corner. He looks smooth, Bauer, but I do not
:34:31. > :34:36.know what kind of acceleration he has got. As we saw in that Tour de
:34:37. > :34:45.France sprint, not a great deal happened. He seems like an
:34:46. > :34:55.enjoyments rider. -- endurance rider. It looks like New Zealand on
:34:56. > :35:06.the front at the moment, possibly. No, is it Kennaugh? Kennaugh, I left
:35:07. > :35:13.him out of that equation, simply because he has had such a hard day.
:35:14. > :35:19.But the Australians certainly should be digging deep. There is no point
:35:20. > :35:26.in the Australians sitting back, because they have got Ewan up the
:35:27. > :35:35.road. As they come through, this time around, they will have
:35:36. > :35:42.road. As they come through, this completed 140 kilometres. This group
:35:43. > :35:46.road. As they come through, this led by Geraint Thomas, of Wales. He
:35:47. > :35:55.slowed down to take the bottle. He knew that that one was very, very
:35:56. > :35:59.important, so he took no chances. I am not sure they will allow feeding
:36:00. > :36:10.at this point in the race, so best to get it on board when you can. 3.5
:36:11. > :36:15.hours in the saddle, at this point. Just a shade under 40km/h. The
:36:16. > :36:24.penultimate lap of the race, underweight. Here comes Caleb Ewan
:36:25. > :36:28.of Australia. He is losing ground but still doing a decent job. I
:36:29. > :36:32.wonder if he knows what is going on behind him. Two of his team-mates
:36:33. > :36:44.will be coming up like a steam train, I would imagine. Here they
:36:45. > :36:51.are. It is Simon Clarke on the front. Why, oh why, does he not look
:36:52. > :36:55.around and wait for his team-mates, have a drink, have a breather, and
:36:56. > :37:00.starts to help them get back to this front group? Clearly unaware of what
:37:01. > :37:08.is going on around him, for whatever reason. It is a big gap that the
:37:09. > :37:13.front three has got. I do not think they can close it. Renshaw wanted to
:37:14. > :37:29.be carried to the sprint, but that is not going to happen. This looks
:37:30. > :37:32.to me like a group which is resigned to Jake riding round to the finish.
:37:33. > :37:39.Russell Downing in there for England. Here comes Ewan, who will
:37:40. > :37:47.be relieved to have got the bottle this time around. I would like them
:37:48. > :37:55.to explain their tactics at the end of the day. I think they are all
:37:56. > :38:00.resigned. That is not the face of the man we saw last lap, who was
:38:01. > :38:04.desperately trying to get back in touch with the front three. It is a
:38:05. > :38:11.man who is just waiting for the day to end. Same with these others.
:38:12. > :38:19.There is not a lot they can do now, with a deficit of more than two
:38:20. > :38:34.minutes. It has been a long day for Pete Kennaugh, more than for anyone
:38:35. > :38:36.else! We are down to nine riders, and I think almost certainly, it
:38:37. > :38:43.will be Thwaites, Bauer and and I think almost certainly, it
:38:44. > :38:51.for the medals. Two minutes at this stage is a lot of ground to be
:38:52. > :38:57.behind. 26k to go for the leaders. Bauer takes on some food. It is so
:38:58. > :39:03.easy to go electric, when you get low on energy. Thwaites is looking
:39:04. > :39:11.better than he was before, when they were driving to get this breakaway
:39:12. > :39:14.established. The gears of the others are going up as well. Another
:39:15. > :39:25.tell-tale sign of fatigue setting tell-tale sign of fatigue setting
:39:26. > :39:32.in. As they go along St Vincent Street, away from the city centre,
:39:33. > :39:37.heading west. Let's have a look what has happened here in this chase
:39:38. > :39:44.group. A quick right change required, and it is Mark Renshaw.
:39:45. > :39:49.That looked like it was a prearranged bike change, which is
:39:50. > :39:55.pretty smart, but it cannot be doing much for his morale. It has been a
:39:56. > :40:02.disrupted afternoon for Mark Renshaw. Thwaites leads this trio on
:40:03. > :40:10.the climb. Bauer trying to stock up as much as he can. Just done eight
:40:11. > :40:15.quick calculation, and they have been up 456 small climbs today, by
:40:16. > :40:22.the time they have finished this race. People were asking, is it a
:40:23. > :40:33.worthy championship course? 456 small climbs! It was the same in the
:40:34. > :40:36.women's race, it was who was left standing, contested the medals,
:40:37. > :40:49.really. Everybody else was going backwards, it was Lizzie Armitstead
:40:50. > :40:55.and Emma Pooley. It was a stunning, powerful, decisive surge from Lizzie
:40:56. > :41:01.Armitstead on that last lap to take gold today. As they come into
:41:02. > :41:09.Buchanan Street. This does not look like a set of people driving to get
:41:10. > :41:15.back on terms. But fair play, riders of this calibre, riding in these
:41:16. > :41:18.conditions, just going through another hour, or three quarters of
:41:19. > :41:27.an hour of racing, just to say you have finished, is worthy. Geraint
:41:28. > :41:31.Thomas going to the front. It would be quite something if Thomas could
:41:32. > :41:35.win this race, to become the first Welshman to win a cycling gold
:41:36. > :41:42.medal. I thought he looked good couple of laps ago, but Scott
:41:43. > :41:46.Thwaites almost looks like he has come round a bit. I am sure it could
:41:47. > :41:53.turn on its head when the pressure really comes on on some of the
:41:54. > :41:57.climbs. It is hard to tell who is the freshest at the moment. They are
:41:58. > :42:03.just roughly doing their terms, they do not need to do any more to stay
:42:04. > :42:09.ahead of the rest, I do not think. Nobody is giving anything away. The
:42:10. > :42:22.closer we get to the finish, as they come up towards Kelvingrove Park...
:42:23. > :42:30.And this trio with a decent amount of elbow room at the front of the
:42:31. > :42:39.race. CHRIS BOARDMAN: Only 13 riders have
:42:40. > :42:47.come across the last time check, out of 140 starters.
:42:48. > :42:51.SIMON BROTHERTON: For those of you churning in, wondering how David
:42:52. > :42:56.Millar is getting on for Scotland, just a few minutes ago, he came over
:42:57. > :43:06.the time check in 11th, 3.44 minutes down, with Scott Davies and then
:43:07. > :43:13.Craven for company. Here we are back with Renshaw, the Australian. It
:43:14. > :43:17.just has not gone to plan for the Aussies to day. They have had a
:43:18. > :43:28.stranglehold on this event, winning the last four.
:43:29. > :43:34.Caleb Ewan, having been caught by that group, is going to be
:43:35. > :43:40.struggling to hang onto the back of it, I think. He has put so much
:43:41. > :43:44.effort in over last lap and a half. It just happens so quickly at this
:43:45. > :43:49.point in the race, when you run out of energy, you just grind to a halt.
:43:50. > :43:57.Someone can go from looking really fresh to just grinding to a halt,
:43:58. > :44:00.within ten minutes. Geraint Thomas, regardless of his physical state,
:44:01. > :44:11.looks like a man who is up for a fight. Chance of a lifetime for
:44:12. > :44:17.Thwaites. What is Bauer likely to do, is he likely to have a good old
:44:18. > :44:22.go, or will they all leave it to the finish? I would expect to see Bauer
:44:23. > :44:26.going for an attack. I do not think he would want
:44:27. > :44:29.going for an attack. I do not think finish. Indeed, he looks as though
:44:30. > :44:35.he has been taking as much on board as possible in the last 20 minutes
:44:36. > :44:40.or so. Of the three of them, I would say Thwaites has got a pretty good
:44:41. > :44:46.shout. Geraint is the hard man, and a good tactician as well. They are
:44:47. > :44:51.leading by just over two and a half minutes now. Just having a quick
:44:52. > :44:59.chat there, deciding what the tax Excel going to be. As we switch back

:46:21. > :46:29.crowd there. Getting towards the point where somebody is going to
:46:30. > :46:34.have to start the attacking. This is it. We're looking at the leading
:46:35. > :46:40.three a bit further back. I think Caleb Ewan is struggling to keep
:46:41. > :46:44.going. Simon Clarke alongside him. He's absolutely parked it there.
:46:45. > :46:49.Barely got the strength to turn the pedals round. That's about the speed

:46:57. > :47:03.fact, not quite that fast! The aerial shot gives you an idea of
:47:04. > :47:06.just how fast they are still going. They've just come down the descent
:47:07. > :47:13.of Gibson Road, heading into Woodlands Road. Momentarily making
:47:14. > :47:20.the journey back in towards the city to double back on themselves. Here
:47:21. > :47:27.we are with the leaders once more. What a race and we're not done yet.
:47:28. > :47:36.So wait again asserting himself on the front as the road goes uphill.
:47:37. > :47:40.-- Scott Thwaites. There doesn't seem to be much to choose between
:47:41. > :47:43.the three of them at the moment. Scott Thwaites is not looking back
:47:44. > :47:49.to check what condition the others are in. Jack Bauer seems to be on
:47:50. > :47:53.the back on the climb so he can get a good gauge of how the others are

:47:55. > :47:58.state of the others professional to get a feel for the
:47:59. > :48:03.language, the gear they're using, how much back when there is, and the
:48:04. > :48:08.riders will try to hide it but sometimes there's nothing you can do
:48:09. > :48:12.about it and there are several tells they look out for. No
:48:13. > :48:17.indication from any of them so far. They all look about the same! No
:48:18. > :48:25.indication as to who is bluffing and who is really going well, who might
:48:26. > :48:29.launch an attack. The horrid thing in this is whom launches the first
:48:30. > :48:30.one because are they going to get caught out
:48:31. > :48:34.one because are they going to get always difficult waiting for
:48:35. > :48:41.somebody to throw the first punch, so to speak. That's what they're
:48:42. > :48:45.doing right now because they are heading towards the last 20
:48:46. > :48:57.kilometres of this race. It seems they've been out there for ever. 20
:48:58. > :49:00.kilometres to go. Over the cobbles. It has brightened up but it is still
:49:01. > :49:04.raining so I think it's fair to say these are the conditions for the
:49:05. > :49:06.rest of the day, not that it will make any difference to the road
:49:07. > :49:17.surface is now as everything is good to be drenched. A lighter shade of
:49:18. > :49:22.grey above the finishing area now. Total motivation for all of these is
:49:23. > :49:27.that they know they are guaranteed a medal. Nobody else in the race can
:49:28. > :49:30.say that. In some ways, that's the best group to be in because no
:49:31. > :49:34.matter what happens, they are going to be standing on the podium. They
:49:35. > :49:39.can probably afford a mechanical problem now as well. A situation
:49:40. > :49:43.where these three know that everyone gets a prize of some colour. Who can
:49:44. > :49:51.claim the gold? They won't have to wait too long now. Half an hour, I
:49:52. > :49:54.would say, of racing left to do. It slowed down quite a bit in the last
:49:55. > :50:02.couple of laps. I think it's really starting to take its toll, getting
:50:03. > :50:07.on for nearly 41 kilometres per hour a while and we dipped below 40
:50:08. > :50:15.metres per hour in the last two laps. I suspect that will pick the
:50:16. > :50:19.not too distant future. Geraint Thomas doing a turn up front with
:50:20. > :50:26.Jack Bauer right behind him. This looks like Grant Ferguson, the
:50:27. > :50:29.20-year-old from the host nation. Fifth in the men's mountain bike
:50:30. > :50:44.race and he's done really well to hang on this long. He certainly has.
:50:45. > :50:50.He is going to be one of those who finishes the race. He is a lovely
:50:51. > :50:56.young lad. I've been on the mountain bike with him on several occasions
:50:57. > :51:00.and he's very skilled. Dished out a bit of punishment on the descent,
:51:01. > :51:11.did he? Chris is wincing at the very memory of it! A bit more out of
:51:12. > :51:16.those muscles. Into the city centre once more down towards Nelson
:51:17. > :51:22.Mandela Place. Is anybody going to have a go this time around? Just
:51:23. > :51:26.George Street, and then the left-hand turn. Is somebody going to
:51:27. > :51:30.chance their arm and launch the attack? They've only got so much
:51:31. > :51:35.energy left in the tank, all of them. They need to make it count.
:51:36. > :51:41.Whoever makes an attack, if any of them do, they need to make it count.
:51:42. > :51:48.Who knows how many times you can go for it between now and the end of
:51:49. > :51:52.the race? Only two goes at this. An opportunity either over the top or
:51:53. > :51:57.on the climb itself. Only a few seconds' burst but it will catch
:51:58. > :52:00.people out on their tired legs. We can see it sweeping left in front of
:52:01. > :52:07.them, setting themselves up on the right side of the road, trying to
:52:08. > :52:11.carry as much speed as possible. Jack Bauer going to the front as
:52:12. > :52:18.they take on Montrose Street for the penultimate time. He's got himself
:52:19. > :52:25.for -- to the back now. They lead from the front. Doesn't look as if
:52:26. > :52:40.anyone is going to try and launch anything. They have to anticipate
:52:41. > :52:46.the potential need to accelerate. Bauer just letting himself adrift
:52:47. > :52:52.from front. No indication of who is fatigued here. It's impossible to
:52:53. > :52:56.tell when you look at the three of them at the moment. It's going to
:52:57. > :53:01.come down to the last lap, isn't it? What a last lap it has the potential
:53:02. > :53:05.to be. It's definitely these three who will contest the finish. That
:53:06. > :53:17.has certainly been apparent for a little while now. Well over 2.5
:53:18. > :53:23.minutes now, the lead. David Millar is in ninth place, 4.5 minutes in
:53:24. > :53:37.arrears. I'm sure he'll see the day through.
:53:38. > :53:45.Thomas just dropping back a little bit and having a look down at the
:53:46. > :53:50.bike. It would be a terrible time for him to have a mechanical,
:53:51. > :53:54.wouldn't it? He could still get a medal now, I think, even with a bike
:53:55. > :54:02.change but I think the gold would be out the window. That's the kind of
:54:03. > :54:04.thing you do if you're going to attack, so you
:54:05. > :54:08.thing you do if you're going to the slipstream and surprise them. He
:54:09. > :54:16.suddenly started loitering just off the back. We saw Emma Pooley launch
:54:17. > :54:20.a couple of attacks from a similar position in the women's race this
:54:21. > :54:24.morning. Still together, coming down the high street. They are heading
:54:25. > :54:40.back towards the green. Bauer looks the high street. They are heading
:54:41. > :54:45.the freshest of the three. Feeding little and often, Bauer, constantly.
:54:46. > :54:51.Next time over the line, they'll take the bell. Turning into London
:54:52. > :54:57.Road now, which will bring them back towards us. One more time they will
:54:58. > :55:05.be coming through here. It's been a long day for them all. Thomas on the
:55:06. > :55:11.front, Bauer in the middle, Scott Thwaites at the back. Meanwhile,
:55:12. > :55:16.back on Montrose Street, here is the next group. That's just how far back
:55:17. > :55:22.they are. Peter Kennaugh at the front of that group, Ross Downing
:55:23. > :55:27.there as well. Mark Renshaw, number 14, for Australia still up there and
:55:28. > :55:34.the rider from New Zealand is Greg Henderson in the middle. Hats off to
:55:35. > :55:39.Peter Kennaugh. In with it. The easiest thing in the world would
:55:40. > :55:45.have been to just roll off into the pits having been caught. Peter
:55:46. > :55:52.Kennaugh certainly made it a very interesting race but it was asking
:55:53. > :55:57.an extraordinary amount to win with a ride like that. Certainly took
:55:58. > :56:03.everybody by surprise, including us. Actually, that's not hard! Here they
:56:04. > :56:12.come with a couple of right-handers through the water. They're rolling
:56:13. > :56:13.through now. There's no real need to force this break forward. They've
:56:14. > :56:20.just got to keep rolling through, force this break forward. They've
:56:21. > :56:22.the finish until it's time to start the attacking. Who knows,
:56:23. > :56:29.the finish until it's time to start go all the way to the line. I'd be
:56:30. > :56:32.very surprised if that was the case. Just 15 kilometres remaining to
:56:33. > :56:37.decide the Commonwealth title. What a race and what an intriguing final
:56:38. > :56:40.lap we've a race and what an intriguing final
:56:41. > :56:43.three. We're looking at the medallists here. Barring some major
:56:44. > :56:58.unforeseen problem. Who has got medallists here. Barring some major
:56:59. > :57:01.legs? Wales, New Zealand and England still in the running. Thomas, Bauer
:57:02. > :57:31.and Thwaites. Oh, a problem here for Luke Rowe.
:57:32. > :57:33.of getting one of the minor places. From our

:57:47. > :57:48.One lap to go in the Commonwealth Games men's road race.
:57:49. > :57:53.One lap to go in the Commonwealth hours in the saddle and one of these
:57:54. > :57:57.three will be crowned Commonwealth champion and my goodness me, won't
:57:58. > :58:02.they have earned it? Geraint Thomas from Wales at the back of the three,
:58:03. > :58:06.Scott Thwaites in the middle for England, and Jack Bauer - who was so
:58:07. > :58:11.close to winning a stage in the Tour de France couple of weeks ago -
:58:12. > :58:17.leading the way for New Zealand. The last time check we had was over 2.5
:58:18. > :58:21.minutes from the nearest challengers. Given the nature and
:58:22. > :58:24.the make-up of those, they weren't riders who were chasing for all they
:58:25. > :58:28.were worth and at this stage in the race if the gap is anything like
:58:29. > :58:36.that, it would be far too big. Three my disc -- riders, three medals.
:58:37. > :58:42.It's just a question of who will get which one and will there be a
:58:43. > :58:48.sprint? Is somebody going to surge forward and try to get away and drop
:58:49. > :58:54.the other two? Or will the status quo remain until the end? Will we
:58:55. > :58:58.see a three up sprint to the end? It's hard to know who it is that
:58:59. > :59:05.would be in that situation after so much racing. With fresh legs, it
:59:06. > :59:11.would probably go to Thwaites. There's Grant Ferguson. It started
:59:12. > :59:13.absolutely poorer again at the finish. Luckily,
:59:14. > :59:16.absolutely poorer again at the the riders are out on the course,
:59:17. > :59:21.which is very close to where we are. the riders are out on the course,
:59:22. > :59:23.which is very close to where Maybe that cloud will catch up with them
:59:24. > :59:28.as they had along Argyle Street. Thomas having a little look, just
:59:29. > :59:41.checking the other two out. Bauer is a bit of a diesel once he
:59:42. > :59:50.gets going. He powers along the road. He's probably just wondering
:59:51. > :59:54.how he can cause himself to get up the road on his own and take them by
:59:55. > :59:57.surprise. One of the downsides of having a group of three is that it's
:59:58. > :00:05.very difficult to take anybody unawares. Hats off to the people of
:00:06. > :00:11.Glasgow for turning out in such great numbers to day. They have had
:00:12. > :00:15.such a soaking this afternoon. It has been a good circuit for them,
:00:16. > :00:22.being able to see the riders so many times. They have been rewarded for
:00:23. > :00:26.their perseverance in sticking with taking it nice and steady through
:00:27. > :00:44.there, they have the time in which to do so.
:00:45. > :00:55.SIMON BROTHERTON: Here is the second group, as the bell goes, and it is
:00:56. > :00:59.going to be just over three minutes. Well, that is a group rolling to the
:01:00. > :01:03.finish, seated through, maybe contest the minor places. -- see it
:01:04. > :01:23.through. Those riders were riding for fourth
:01:24. > :01:28.place. Meanwhile, here are the leaders.
:01:29. > :01:34.CHRIS BOARDMAN: I make it just 19 riders left in this race. We started
:01:35. > :01:41.with 140. Geraint Thomas makes a move! Thomas decides to go for it.
:01:42. > :01:47.Just a slight hesitation from the others for half a second. Thomas
:01:48. > :01:53.goes for glory. He has got it, he has got the gap, they cannot
:01:54. > :02:03.everybody going along in slow motion here at. He had a little look back,
:02:04. > :02:07.and Thwaites, initially having led the way, has left Bauer on the
:02:08. > :02:13.front. None of them have got anything left in the legs. Thomas
:02:14. > :02:16.got there first. He did catch them by surprise, and he got that split
:02:17. > :02:23.second advantage, which was all he needed just look at the gap he has
:02:24. > :02:29.got already. It was a decent sized incline for him to make his move, on
:02:30. > :02:35.Montrose Street. But now, Geraint Thomas's cards are firmly on the
:02:36. > :02:44.table. Well, it is not they are holding him at 100m. Wouldn't it be
:02:45. > :02:46.fantastic to see Geraint Thomas, always in the action, but almost
:02:47. > :02:55.never the first to cross the line, take the Commonwealth title? Thomas
:02:56. > :03:02.now, fully committed in his pursuit of the gold medal here. It says
:03:03. > :03:07.eight seconds, I am not sure it of the gold medal here. It says
:03:08. > :03:12.quite that. But I cannot believe that that is not enough for Thomas,
:03:13. > :03:16.I think he has got it now. He timed it perfectly, it is a difficult
:03:17. > :03:21.thing to do with just three riders. I do not think either of them have
:03:22. > :03:25.got an answer to this one. He just made sure that he was on the other
:03:26. > :03:30.side of the road, and he absolutely went for it on St Vincent Street.
:03:31. > :03:35.Still fairly early on the final lap when he made the attack. Thwaites,
:03:36. > :03:43.content to let Bauer do the work here, as they try to chase Thomas
:03:44. > :03:47.down. It looks like the other two have already resigned themselves to
:03:48. > :03:55.sprinting for silver and bronze. What a ride this is from Thomas, for
:03:56. > :04:00.Wales. Just have to stay upright and avoid any mechanical mishaps on this
:04:01. > :04:07.final lap. He has gained another two seconds, ten seconds is the gap now.
:04:08. > :04:08.I would say it is slightly more. The other two are starting to think a
:04:09. > :04:17.bit about the sprint. I other two are starting to think a
:04:18. > :04:23.they were going to get back to him, they would have done it immediately.
:04:24. > :04:31.Geraint Thomas gets his skates on through Kelvingrove Park, trying to
:04:32. > :04:32.blast his way around this final lap. So, at the
:04:33. > :04:39.blast his way around this final lap. in the silver medal position, with
:04:40. > :04:46.Bauer behind him. But here is the race leader, from Wales! Is this
:04:47. > :04:50.going to be an historic ride? Will it be only the third ever gold medal
:04:51. > :04:55.for Wales in cycling in the Commonwealth Games? I cannot believe
:04:56. > :05:00.anything other than mechanical problems will stop him now. He came
:05:01. > :05:05.here after a very hard Tour de France. He was just beaten in the
:05:06. > :05:13.time trial. Well, this one is going to be his. And it is deserved. The
:05:14. > :05:19.bit is very firmly between his teeth. What form he has come out of
:05:20. > :05:27.the Tour de France with. You can just see them in the distance, but
:05:28. > :05:33.he is driving away from them. And the others, we will be getting time
:05:34. > :05:36.checks on them soon as well. They will start to think about riding for
:05:37. > :05:43.medals and attacking each other, rather than chasing Thomas. 18
:05:44. > :05:47.seconds, the latest gap, and as you could see, there was no sign of
:05:48. > :05:54.anybody behind him, as he went round the corner. I just do not think they
:05:55. > :05:57.are going through the motions of chasing Geraint Thomas, but they
:05:58. > :06:08.have not got the power to bring him back. In the heart of the West End,
:06:09. > :06:12.at the furthest point from the start-finish line at the moment,
:06:13. > :06:18.geographically, six kilometres into the final lap of this race. It is an
:06:19. > :06:24.enormous gap that he has opened up. I think they have decided that that
:06:25. > :06:27.is it, they are going to let him go. He has just got to stay upright,
:06:28. > :06:35.keep the pressure on the pedals, and the gold medal is his. Surely nobody
:06:36. > :06:40.can close this now. Nearly half a minute, his advantage, already. He
:06:41. > :06:45.has built up that lead in probably just three kilometres. He can enjoy
:06:46. > :06:52.the sound of the crowds. It is not all over, but I do not think he can
:06:53. > :06:56.be caught now. Geraint Thomas is a proper team player, so it is great
:06:57. > :07:05.to see him having the opportunity to ride for himself today. And here he
:07:06. > :07:10.is, Geraint Thomas. He will take the left-hand turn, which will take him
:07:11. > :07:17.down into Gibson Street. He will go whizzing down this descent. He can
:07:18. > :07:20.now choose to be a bit cautious on these corners. Thwaites is doing the
:07:21. > :07:29.ride of his life, not these corners. Thwaites is doing the
:07:30. > :07:32.driving so hard now. He has got a very good chance against Bauer of
:07:33. > :07:35.getting the very good chance against Bauer of
:07:36. > :07:45.after himself and does not allow the New Zealander to surprise him.
:07:46. > :07:48.after himself and does not allow the 70km/h down here. A very popular win
:07:49. > :07:57.this would be for Geraint Thomas, as he pushes his lead out even further.
:07:58. > :08:06.All things being equal, everything being well, this was a race winning
:08:07. > :08:12.move, a gold-medal winning move, provided he stays upright and has no
:08:13. > :08:16.mechanical issue. These two were very evenly matched, they could not
:08:17. > :08:25.get away from each other. I wonder if that final climb of Montrose
:08:26. > :08:28.Street will prove decisive for them. The Welsh squad were looking really
:08:29. > :08:37.strong throughout the race, they had a really strong line-up. They have
:08:38. > :08:41.been near the front all day. The right Thomas, unlike Peter Kennaugh,
:08:42. > :08:46.has ridden a more right Thomas, unlike Peter Kennaugh,
:08:47. > :08:51.pattern, staying in the top ten, letting his team police the moves,
:08:52. > :09:04.and then opening up in the last ten kilometres. Just 6.5 kilometres to
:09:05. > :09:11.go. And the gap going up all the time. Three quarters of a minute
:09:12. > :09:21.now. They are getting time checks, they are riding for the finish. That
:09:22. > :09:23.is not to people riding to get themselves back into contention,
:09:24. > :09:28.is not to people riding to get they know they are contesting the
:09:29. > :09:34.silver and a bronze. Oh, there is a problem for Geraint Thomas! What
:09:35. > :09:39.drama! Thomas has had to stop! I do not believe it! Puncture on the
:09:40. > :09:43.front. This needs to be a good change. This suddenly makes life
:09:44. > :09:51.interesting, yet again! This is unbelievable for Geraint Thomas! Oh,
:09:52. > :09:58.no! I cannot speak. Such a shame! This has to be a good change. It is
:09:59. > :10:03.an incredibly slow change. And suddenly, these two are right back
:10:04. > :10:08.in the race! They will be blissfully unaware of what they are about to
:10:09. > :10:14.see around the corner. Well, that is desperately sad for Thomas. Has he
:10:15. > :10:18.managed to retain the lead? The helicopter cut away from him, so we
:10:19. > :10:22.did not see it, but he has managed to hang onto it! Let's hope
:10:23. > :10:26.did not see it, but he has managed has managed to maintain something
:10:27. > :10:31.here. The way that he had ridden the last lap, he deserves to retain the
:10:32. > :10:36.lead. For the way he had ridden away from everybody else. Not only that,
:10:37. > :10:41.needs to his composure. What a heart stopping moment for him. My heart
:10:42. > :10:47.was in my mouth, nobody deserves it more than Thomas. It was a slow
:10:48. > :10:52.change, he got a no, service wheel, which had to be fitted to his bike.
:10:53. > :10:56.He has still got an advantage, but you could see that his cornering
:10:57. > :10:59.afterwards was a lot more tentative. 20 seconds, his lead, I hope that is
:11:00. > :11:04.still enough. 20 seconds, his lead, I hope that is
:11:05. > :11:05.not got the news, and they have started to play cat and mouse, which
:11:06. > :11:13.should be good for Thomas. started to play cat and mouse, which
:11:14. > :11:18.relief for Geraint Thomas, and for the people of Wales, that their man
:11:19. > :11:24.is still in front. I have got to wonder, where was his team car? May
:11:25. > :11:30.be the commissar had not let them go. And you can see the other two,
:11:31. > :11:36.just a bit further down the road. What has he got left? Suddenly, it
:11:37. > :11:41.is not a procession any more. He cannot enjoy the crowds, he has got
:11:42. > :11:46.to get his head down and drive all the way to the line. The gold
:11:47. > :11:54.medal, the others will see it is still a possibility for them. If he
:11:55. > :11:58.has used up all his energy to make that attack, then they could still
:11:59. > :12:00.get back on terms, but I do not think they can. I wonder how aware
:12:01. > :12:06.the other two are. If at all. think they can. I wonder how aware
:12:07. > :12:08.of these long, straight roads, they will have seen him in front, I do
:12:09. > :12:13.not know whether they think there will have seen him in front, I do
:12:14. > :12:19.something they can do about it. 20 seconds is still a good buffer, with
:12:20. > :12:22.4.5 kilometres remaining. That has certainly added some drama. I hope
:12:23. > :12:32.nothing else happens to Geraint Thomas. He thoroughly deserves this
:12:33. > :12:44.win. This is where he has got to be careful. These are unknown tyres
:12:45. > :12:44.win. This is where he has got to be him on the front wheel now. And here
:12:45. > :12:49.is the chase, not too far behind. He has got one more climb to negotiate,
:12:50. > :12:56.then there are no more big obstacles in his way. He has pushed his lead
:12:57. > :13:00.out again. It is certainly a decent lead, he has just got to be careful
:13:01. > :13:03.on these corners, it is certainly a decent lead, he has just got to be
:13:04. > :13:05.careful on these corners, leaders not know the tyres, you does not
:13:06. > :13:13.know the pressure, he does not know how it will slow down, compared to
:13:14. > :13:18.the tyres he has been using all day. Here we go, back with the leader,
:13:19. > :13:21.Geraint Thomas. Still closing in on that gold-medal. But as we suggested
:13:22. > :13:28.earlier on that last lap, far from there yet. This is it now. The last
:13:29. > :13:35.time up the climb. This is the there yet. This is it now. The last
:13:36. > :13:35.major difficulty of there yet. This is it now. The last
:13:36. > :13:43.can hold a decent lead here, every chance of bringing home
:13:44. > :13:51.the gold medal for Wales. And he knows he is just 100m away from
:13:52. > :14:00.finishing the very last climb of the day. He has got he is getting plenty
:14:01. > :14:11.of time checks. And here come the next two, Jack Bauer and Thwaites.
:14:12. > :14:17.After 456 climbs, they will be glad that this is the very last one.
:14:18. > :14:24.After this they will be coming down towards the park. And it is not
:14:25. > :14:30.looking easy, is it? Thwaites is looking back, but Bauer is able to
:14:31. > :14:33.stay with him. He cannot counter. Between these two, it is almost
:14:34. > :14:44.certainly going to be a sprint now. Back with the leader. It will be
:14:45. > :14:53.mostly downhill as he heads back down towards Glasgow Green. He's got
:14:54. > :15:01.Rottenrow to negotiate. Very careful on these corners now. Taking no
:15:02. > :15:05.chances on this new front wheel. One of the slowest corners of the day
:15:06. > :15:08.that we've seen but it doesn't matter. Safely negotiated, down the
:15:09. > :15:14.high street he goes, past the rail station, and this is to take him
:15:15. > :15:18.down to within touching distance of Glasgow Green and the finish. The
:15:19. > :15:24.race for silver far from done as well but these two, having thought
:15:25. > :15:30.for a moment - well, we thought they would be back in contention for
:15:31. > :15:33.gold, but it doesn't look that way. Geraint Thomas can't afford to have
:15:34. > :15:37.another problem. They're not that far behind him, just a few hundred
:15:38. > :15:45.metres. What a ride from Geraint Thomas of Wales. This is going to be
:15:46. > :15:50.a very, very popular win as he turns down into London Road. Again, he'll
:15:51. > :15:55.just take it steady round this corner. Here he comes. He'll see the
:15:56. > :16:00.edge of Glasgow Green, the entrance to it, just in front of him. Two
:16:01. > :16:06.kilometres to go now, just over a minute of riding and he'll see the
:16:07. > :16:09.one, to flag and then he'll be able to enjoy the last kilometre of his
:16:10. > :16:15.race. He is almost there now, almost done it. Glasgow Green and the
:16:16. > :16:21.finishing area awaits and this will be a final 1.7 kilometres to savour
:16:22. > :16:24.for Geraint Thomas. That late, late scare halfway round the final lap
:16:25. > :16:29.had everybody's hearts in their mouths but he survived it. Still
:16:30. > :16:32.getting some time checks just to let him know that it's OK and he can be
:16:33. > :16:35.careful on the last corners. It's his now. They're only now taking
:16:36. > :16:42.that turn into London Road. his now. They're only now taking
:16:43. > :16:47.he gets a flat tyre now, he just needs to keep riding on it and get
:16:48. > :16:52.to the finish. Here we are, near the People's Palace and Glasgow Green.
:16:53. > :16:57.What a race it's been, what a tough race. What a ride by Geraint Thomas.
:16:58. > :17:04.Bronze medallist in the time trial on Thursday. A week ago, he was
:17:05. > :17:08.finishing the Tour de France on the Champs-Elysees in Paris and here he
:17:09. > :17:14.is riding to Commonwealth Games gold. Just over a kilometre to go.
:17:15. > :17:19.He's almost there. Helicopters overhead are announcing his arrival.
:17:20. > :17:22.The pin ultimate bends to bring him alongside the river towards the very
:17:23. > :17:28.last curve that will see him onto the finishing straight. Geraint
:17:29. > :17:34.Thomas is going to win with a little bit of elbow room here. He would
:17:35. > :17:36.have had more but for that late puncture which just must have felt
:17:37. > :17:40.like it took an eternity to get sorted out. What must have been
:17:41. > :17:47.going through his sorted out. What must have been
:17:48. > :17:49.composure, his legs stayed good and he stormed away again, increasing
:17:50. > :17:56.his advantage over the chasing Dureau of Jack Bauer and Scott
:17:57. > :17:59.Thwaites. They're the three who, a considerable distance before the
:18:00. > :18:05.end, were left to contest the medals after Peter Kennaugh's long escape
:18:06. > :18:09.was reeled back in. This is a moment he can savour. So often the team
:18:10. > :18:14.player but now the glory will be his. Geraint Thomas for Wales coming
:18:15. > :18:18.into the finishing straight. This is an historic moment for Welsh
:18:19. > :18:25.cycling, the first-ever Welsh male to win a gold medal on two wheels in
:18:26. > :18:31.the Commonwealth Games, a third ever Welsh gold in cycling. Louise Jones
:18:32. > :18:33.in 1990, Mick Allcock in 2002 and Geraint Thomas wins for Wales in
:18:34. > :18:45.Glasgow Airport Geraint Thomas wins for Wales in
:18:46. > :18:52.the late scare and the puncture on the last lap. He kept his cool and
:18:53. > :18:57.rode away to victory. Jack Bauer now on the front as we
:18:58. > :18:58.rode away to victory. Jack Bauer now race for silver. Bauer leading out
:18:59. > :19:01.rode away to victory. Jack Bauer now Scott Thwaites who has done a
:19:02. > :19:09.tremendous ride to win a medal, whichever colour it ends
:19:10. > :19:16.tremendous ride to win a medal, as Bauer follows. Bauer has been in
:19:17. > :19:19.a situation recently where it is going to come down to the sprint.
:19:20. > :19:25.Thwaites has decided he's taking the lead. And the weather, which has
:19:26. > :19:32.thrown everything at the cyclists throughout the afternoon, bucket
:19:33. > :19:36.loads of water. 250 metres to go. When is it going to open up?
:19:37. > :19:41.Buffeted by wind and rain, it's all come down to this. The skies begin
:19:42. > :19:45.to clear and the gold medallist is already home. Now the race for
:19:46. > :19:50.silver and Thwaites is first to lead out the sprint with Bauer biding his
:19:51. > :19:57.time. Has he got the Bauer to try to come past? Bauer makes his move.
:19:58. > :20:01.Neck and neck, side-by-side, up towards the line and Bauer just
:20:02. > :20:06.snatches the silver for New Zealand and it is bronze for Scott Thwaites
:20:07. > :20:12.for England and now we have our top three confirmed. But what a race it
:20:13. > :20:17.was! I think everybody earned the places they have out there. A
:20:18. > :20:23.popular winner. Everybody will be absolutely delighted for him. A
:20:24. > :20:30.great ride by the Welsh team and their leading light brought it home.
:20:31. > :20:34.He wins for Wales. The final moments of his ride once again. He knew it
:20:35. > :20:38.was in the bag and was able to savour the moment as he raced up the
:20:39. > :20:40.finishing straight. Here is the moment of victory. Gold for Wales
:20:41. > :21:16.and gold for Geraint Thomas. Geraint, Commonwealth champion. I
:21:17. > :21:21.feel as though you had to win that race three times out there. It was
:21:22. > :21:27.such a grim day and, to be honest, I felt terrible at the start. I was
:21:28. > :21:32.thinking of just stopping, I was just that bad. But luckily I got
:21:33. > :21:37.into it and everybody else seems to come down to my level and when that
:21:38. > :21:46.move went, it was perfect and I was kind of surprised at how easy it
:21:47. > :21:50.went away. But it was great. I just thought, "what have I got to do"
:21:51. > :21:58.when I got that puncher but fortunately I had a decent gap. The
:21:59. > :22:04.first problem was that my chain got all tangled up so that wasn't ideal.
:22:05. > :22:08.So that wasn't ideal. But it was a good day anyway. What was the
:22:09. > :22:13.thinking in the peloton when you saw Kennaugh go away? I think he was
:22:14. > :22:17.after a few people to go with him and I actually went to go with him
:22:18. > :22:23.and my bottle fell out and I was half trying to catch it.
:22:24. > :22:29.Unfortunately for him he was on his own and he'd kind of Borders ticket
:22:30. > :22:34.then so... On a day like today, it was going to be a hard man that won
:22:35. > :22:37.this race. So often we see new support other riders up onto the
:22:38. > :22:41.podium. What does it mean to you individually now to take the top
:22:42. > :22:48.spot? It's unbelievable, really. I never expected it. Coming off the
:22:49. > :22:54.tour, I was tired and I thought it was going to be a massive challenge
:22:55. > :22:59.physically to get some results here but the motivation was there and I'm
:23:00. > :23:06.buzzing off the whole team Wales setup and I get to race for Wales
:23:07. > :23:09.for the first time since 2006. To get the bronze at the TT was a
:23:10. > :23:13.massive boost to the confidence because it showed that I have
:23:14. > :23:18.recovered a bit and then today, I just got stuck in and I couldn't
:23:19. > :23:23.have done any better. The first Welshman to win a medal on the road
:23:24. > :23:27.for Wales and I think you've got a special event coming up tonight.
:23:28. > :23:32.Yeah, our coach told me this morning, just before the start, that
:23:33. > :23:39.Wales wanted me to carry the flag so that will be a massive honour. It's
:23:40. > :23:44.just as good as would again race, being able to carry that flag. It
:23:45. > :23:51.means a lot to me and my family. Thank you very much indeed. Thanks.
:23:52. > :23:57.When Geraint Thomas took a bronze in the time trial on Thursday we talked
:23:58. > :24:01.about his heart. How he picked himself up after the Tour de
:24:02. > :24:11.France. Then he produces something like that. Before the race, they
:24:12. > :24:14.said "wouldn't it be great?" . He is always the nearly man, always
:24:15. > :24:18.helping other people but today he got his shot. But when he got a
:24:19. > :24:24.puncture, we thought it was so slow, the change, but he still managed to
:24:25. > :24:33.get away. I had my earpiece on in the media room and everybody turned
:24:34. > :24:40.around and looked at me when I screeched. Peter Kennaugh - what was
:24:41. > :24:44.he thinking? I'm hoping someone will ask the stop it was a new kind of
:24:45. > :24:47.tactic to take because he was one of the prerace favourites for sure, in
:24:48. > :24:57.fantastic shape after winning Austria. A perfect course and he
:24:58. > :25:02.went out from the gun and I assure -- assume he was expecting people to
:25:03. > :25:06.go with him. It was courageous and he kept it going a long time but you
:25:07. > :25:09.could see the conversation is changing with Mark Cavendish in the
:25:10. > :25:14.car and he was saying he was spent and asking what he needed to do. You
:25:15. > :25:17.wonder whether Cavendish should have told him to let them come back to
:25:18. > :25:23.him because he was in fantastic shape. We will have to let him
:25:24. > :25:27.explain that. He was the one shot, really, for the Isle of Man. Mark
:25:28. > :25:31.Christian was in great shape but he isn't Peter Kennaugh at the moment.
:25:32. > :25:34.He's literally just come across the line behind us now when we've been
:25:35. > :25:43.talking, so not a great day for them. Geraint talked about his wheel
:25:44. > :25:47.change being a chain problem rather than a wheel problem although he
:25:48. > :25:51.changed his wheel. It was a very significant moment. I wasn't quite
:25:52. > :25:56.sure why any of the Welsh team didn't come back to pace him back.
:25:57. > :25:59.It can be quite difficult. If you choose to take radios in the group
:26:00. > :26:03.or not, communication can be a problem. In the cars, it's a lot of
:26:04. > :26:06.energy to bring people back to get you back to the front when you can
:26:07. > :26:11.just weave through the cars. He managed to get into the vehicle is
:26:12. > :26:14.quite quickly and just paste back. A very smart race. He kept across in
:26:15. > :26:18.the line. Always in touch but not visible to us and that's how we
:26:19. > :26:23.would've expected Peter Kennaugh to ride the race. Kennaugh without ever
:26:24. > :26:27.a long time and then the New Zealanders put the hammer down and
:26:28. > :26:32.he got caught with about 48, 49 kilometres to go. He really drove
:26:33. > :26:36.and pulled it all back together and we could see where the cracks were
:26:37. > :26:40.forming but it was Bauer who was the one who really drove off the front
:26:41. > :26:43.and showed that he was strong. He did a similar thing in the Tour de
:26:44. > :26:48.France will top he's in great shape but is most printer so he did well
:26:49. > :26:51.to take the silver. At that point, you've got three away - Geraint
:26:52. > :26:57.Thomas, Scott Thwaites, the surprise package. Bauer and wait used to be
:26:58. > :27:04.in the same team and they knew each other. -- Thwaites. He had a moment
:27:05. > :27:07.of hesitation and that was all he needed because they were all
:27:08. > :27:10.completely spent. You couldn't separate those two so it seemed
:27:11. > :27:17.obvious it was going to come down to the line. Geraint felt he needed to
:27:18. > :27:20.get his pace. He has a good sprint. Don't leave it to a sprint unless
:27:21. > :27:25.you have two and the only horrible but is choosing where to go and
:27:26. > :27:29.David Millar was saying that the ramps aren't necessarily the pace to
:27:30. > :27:35.-- place to attack but there are some false flats when you can go and
:27:36. > :27:38.that's what Geraint Thomas did. He waited till they were looking to the
:27:39. > :27:42.left, he went to the right and all he needed was ten metres and he
:27:43. > :27:46.proved he had the race. He pulled out a massive, massive lead which,
:27:47. > :27:50.frankly, was just as well because then there was that absolute horror
:27:51. > :27:57.moment that he talked about when he punctured. 45 kilometres to go.
:27:58. > :28:00.That's what happens in your dreams, when you are where you're going to
:28:01. > :28:04.win the race and then you stop to talk to somebody. It was such a slow
:28:05. > :28:08.change. He must have seen it slipping away from him. It was
:28:09. > :28:12.neutral service. I thought he had a big enough gap to have his team car
:28:13. > :28:17.behind him but he wasn't there so the wheels were adjusted to just a
:28:18. > :28:20.medium setting. It was just taking for ever. I can't believe he kept
:28:21. > :28:52.the 22nd buffer. JONATHAN EDWARDS: So, that puncture,
:28:53. > :28:55.in some ways, he has kind of always been the bridesmaid and never the
:28:56. > :28:59.bride, so this was a massive moment for him? It was. I think it will be
:29:00. > :29:05.popular amongst all the riders, because he is always working for
:29:06. > :29:08.somebody else. David Millar just coming in there. We expected a bit
:29:09. > :29:09.more from him today, coming in there. We expected a bit
:29:10. > :29:16.nothing else to give. I just coming in there. We expected a bit
:29:17. > :29:20.the right is a worthy champion. I think even if he had got caught up
:29:21. > :29:26.again, I think he still would have got them. The other thing which was
:29:27. > :29:31.difficult for him, he got his wheel from the no, car, and he was not
:29:32. > :29:40.quite sure about it. No, you do not take any chances. You get a neutral
:29:41. > :29:45.tyre. You have done many many kilometres on this circuit, and he
:29:46. > :29:51.has got used to the braking, the tyre pressure, how it feels, when it
:29:52. > :29:53.starts to skip, and suddenly, he has got a completely different feel.
:29:54. > 7:45:16That
