:00:00. > :01:01.two. He had the best season of 47.50 and he has his work cut out.

:01:02. > :01:17.Men's 400m running in Jamaica is not that strong compared to the shorter

:01:18. > :01:18.sprints. The Ugandan does not start in lane four. There is Philip O sigh

:01:19. > :01:30.of Canada. There is Tom Druce who runs for

:01:31. > :01:35.Guernsey, and Brielle on Taplin of Grenada.

:01:36. > :01:58.A strong runner for Texas a and M -- A N M in the United States.

:01:59. > :02:09.He says those sleeves like his hands of power. I'm not quite sure what

:02:10. > :02:11.he's talking about. He's 27, so not just a youngster emerging, but he

:02:12. > :02:24.might be a threat to Kirani James. The only caveat around that 44.01

:02:25. > :03:19.last year was the altitude. He didn't go outbreak quickly but he

:03:20. > :03:26.home strongly. The Botswanan won the Diamond League a few weeks ago and

:03:27. > :03:30.looks strong on this track. STEVE CRAM: This man is going to be

:03:31. > :03:36.a danger to Kirani James. He is the quickest of the qualifiers. That

:03:37. > :03:48.time was short of form but he did break a record before that. He could

:03:49. > :03:52.put James under some pressure. Just easing through, jogging through,

:03:53. > :04:04.45.33, making that look very easy. I don't think James is going to be

:04:05. > :04:09.frightened of him - he should be able to beat him - but pretty good

:04:10. > :04:13.there. JONATHAN EDWARDS: One more heat to

:04:14. > :04:21.go, featuring Martyn Rooney. Let's hear from him.

:04:22. > :04:27.It's a golden age for British athletes to be competing, with the

:04:28. > :04:30.Olympics, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, now the 2017 world

:04:31. > :04:35.Championships in London, so we're very lucky. It's my second

:04:36. > :04:41.Commonwealth Games. I went to Melbourne as a kid and loved it.

:04:42. > :04:45.Martyn Rooney has the Judd greatly in this championship. I experienced

:04:46. > :04:55.a global final at a young age so I have advantage over my competitors

:04:56. > :05:00.quite early on. I didn't go to the deli Commonwealth Games so now I'm

:05:01. > :05:04.trying to make up for it. Season is building towards this and the

:05:05. > :05:07.European Championships in Z?rich. It's a great opportunity to win a

:05:08. > :05:09.medal. I am in front of a home crowd so it would set me up perfectly for

:05:10. > :05:25.the Europeans. In London, I really struggled with

:05:26. > :05:29.the noise because I'd never heard so much noise on me, like a Rooney

:05:30. > :05:34.child going round for my semifinal, and it kind of through me. This

:05:35. > :05:41.year, I'm faster than I've ever been, so I'm trying to use that to

:05:42. > :05:46.my advantage. It's like being given superpowers and you don't know what

:05:47. > :05:53.you're doing. Championships is the perfect occasion to find out.

:05:54. > :06:01.JONATHAN EDWARDS: Martyn Rooney goes in-line six for what you would hope

:06:02. > :06:04.would be easy provocation. A word on his beard,

:06:05. > :06:10.would be easy provocation. A word on of view. With Sir Chris Hoy in the

:06:11. > :06:20.velodrome, we were talking about Bradley Wiggins. Apparently it is

:06:21. > :06:27.not such an issue. I'm glad he hasn't got a ponytail but I'm a fan

:06:28. > :06:32.of Martyn Rooney's because I keep willing him to run so quick. It

:06:33. > :06:37.seems like he's got the ability and the speed. We've seen him run some

:06:38. > :06:41.fantastic relay races. We can always count on him to bring the baton home

:06:42. > :06:46.and make up ground when we've lost ground. I hope he has a great

:06:47. > :06:51.Championships. He is rounded into form nicely. That 45.03 that he's

:06:52. > :06:57.run very recently I hope will give him a loss of confidence because I

:06:58. > :06:59.think that's what he's been lacking. He's had injury and his

:07:00. > :07:06.recuperation hasn't been quite right. We are seeing a new Martyn

:07:07. > :07:13.Rooney. That 44.6 personal-best dates back to 2008 when he was just

:07:14. > :07:18.19. He will be furious that he hasn't been able to really push

:07:19. > :07:22.himself close to that personal-best again. But he has a lot of injury

:07:23. > :07:28.problems so again, when you're doing the 400m, it's hard to return when

:07:29. > :07:35.you've had so many injuries. It's about the timing and the effort.

:07:36. > :07:41.Let's wish him the best. Steve Cram is calling this one. Have you given

:07:42. > :07:45.up on the 800m dreams? STEVE CRAM: Just about. I think he

:07:46. > :07:48.thinks he could of done it but that was alleged in conversation about

:07:49. > :07:57.the beard because wind resistance takes on a whole other connotation

:07:58. > :08:01.here in the commentary box! Martyn Rooney is in Lane six. Lalonde

:08:02. > :08:17.Gordon will be the favourite to go through.

:08:18. > :08:28.We talked about Nigel Levine in the first heat. Rooney has not picked

:08:29. > :08:38.the easiest one here but on his season's form, he should be OK.

:08:39. > :08:55.We missed a couple on the outside there. The young man from Grenada

:08:56. > :09:00.got 46.21 earlier this year. The bronze medallist, Gordon, was fifth

:09:01. > :09:05.earlier this year. He is in excellent form again. 44.91 is his

:09:06. > :09:22.season's best. Gordon has been running some 200s

:09:23. > :09:28.this year, to good effect. Not far off his personal best and that is a

:09:29. > :09:29.good indicator of the 400m form that you bring to a Championships. It's

:09:30. > :09:35.always useful to have you bring to a Championships. It's

:09:36. > :09:42.bag. So Martyn Rooney, then, the last heat of this men's 400m first

:09:43. > :10:18.round. Semifinals tomorrow night. Malala Day Gordon is on the red. --

:10:19. > :10:36.in the red. A good performance from Martyn

:10:37. > :10:42.Rooney. He eases back. Very good indeed, 45.57, an excellent

:10:43. > :10:49.performance. No mistakes, a well-controlled race. And Martyn

:10:50. > :10:59.Rooney looks in good form on the evidence of that. The semifinals but

:11:00. > :11:03.it will get a bit difficult. I don't think Gordon enjoyed Lane one. He

:11:04. > :11:07.was really wider going around the first bend and you wouldn't expect

:11:08. > :11:11.him in lane one in the semifinals but well done, Martyn Rooney.

:11:12. > :11:16.him in lane one in the semifinals realised the race was a long way

:11:17. > :11:20.away from him. Martyn Rooney said he had been thrown by the noise in the

:11:21. > :11:22.stadium at the Olympics in London a couple of years ago but he was ready

:11:23. > :11:25.for it couple of years ago but he was ready

:11:26. > :11:30.tremendous noise as he came down and he finished very strongly.

:11:31. > :11:33.Meanwhile, there was a bit of a staring contest between Lalonde a

:11:34. > :11:39.Meanwhile, there was a bit of a Gordon and the runner in Lane eight.

:11:40. > :11:43.Meanwhile, there was a bit of a Martyn Rooney says he's in the form

:11:44. > :11:48.of his life and he may be telling the truth. Very good. He can

:11:49. > :11:52.sometimes be accused of not getting out hard enough, not committing in

:11:53. > :11:56.the race, but he did really well in the first 200 metres here. He

:11:57. > :11:59.doesn't have the same flat speed as many of the 400m runners so he's got

:12:00. > :12:04.to get out many of the 400m runners so he's got

:12:05. > :12:08.of his to get the stride going. This was a really controlled, measure the

:12:09. > :12:13.run. This part of the race, sometimes he doesn't do enough. In

:12:14. > :12:15.his younger career he would finish strongly but you've got yourself in

:12:16. > :12:18.the race and when it comes to the semifinal, if he runs like this he's

:12:19. > :12:23.got every opportunity of getting through to the final. Now he can

:12:24. > :12:28.relax. He knows he's in a qualifying position. He knows Gordon will be

:12:29. > :12:30.chasing him down, he's watching the screen. Very nicely done and relaxed

:12:31. > :12:42.and he's now with Phil. Relaxation personified there. Are

:12:43. > :12:49.you pleased with how you performed at how it looked? It was the best

:12:50. > :12:52.I've felt in a race all year. I always run my seasons best in the

:12:53. > :12:57.heats for Championships. Today that was really good and if I can

:12:58. > :13:06.replicate that tomorrow, I'll probably run 44! I'm happy. Tell me

:13:07. > :13:10.the emotions on the start line for you when you're coming into an event

:13:11. > :13:14.and know you've got to negotiate a couple of rounds before the business

:13:15. > :13:18.end. I take it round as it comes so every round is a final. You have to

:13:19. > :13:23.be like that to get through each round. A very tough competitor in

:13:24. > :13:29.lane one. I got lucky with the lane draws. I had to come in and race it

:13:30. > :13:33.properly. He set a really good benchmark for me. Keep going.

:13:34. > :13:44.Cheers, Phil. Thanks. Very good indeed. The beard has

:13:45. > :13:47.become part of his persona now. His winning time - 45.5 seven, one of

:13:48. > :14:33.the quickest qualifiers. A great jump! He is the man in form.

:14:34. > :14:36.He jumped 2.28 a couple of weeks ago. He is enjoying a bit of home

:14:37. > :14:53.support. Can England's Tom Parsons match

:14:54. > :14:54.this? Qualifying, remember. No medals today - this is just to get

:14:55. > :15:16.you in the final. Fairly convincing from Tom Parsons.

:15:17. > :15:23.Good clearance there at 2.20m. 2.25m is automatic qualification.

:15:24. > :15:30.The men's hammer qualifying. 70 metres is automatic to take you into

:15:31. > :15:33.the final tomorrow evening. Alex Smith, a silver medal last time

:15:34. > :15:42.around, looking to go beyond 70 metres. We know he's capable. That

:15:43. > :15:49.has snuck over qualifying. Good lad! Silver medal last time, just as

:15:50. > :15:56.his dad did before he went on to take gold in the Commonwealth Games

:15:57. > :16:04.in 1986, also in Scotland. Alex will get the chance to emulate his

:16:05. > :16:14.father's silver gold. Or go in pursuit of it at least. 72.34m will

:16:15. > :16:19.take him into the final. This is Martyn Bernard's second attempt at

:16:20. > :16:26.2.20m. A long way away. He seemed to take

:16:27. > :16:36.off miles away. Look how far he is! Good clearance. Good distance

:16:37. > :16:38.between him and the bar. 2.20 metres is possibly going to be enough to

:16:39. > :17:09.qualify for Wednesday's final. mix-up. The men's decathlon results.

:17:10. > :17:18.I will be discussing the relative merits of long jumping with Denise

:17:19. > :17:24.later. Next, it will be the women's 1500m. We have Laura Muir for

:17:25. > :17:30.Scotland, Laura Weightman for England and also Hannah England for

:17:31. > :17:33.England. Let's hear from her. Your experience in Delhi probably

:17:34. > :17:39.was not the best. I enjoyed it and it was different. Athletically, it

:17:40. > :17:43.was a good stepping stone for me. To come back now with more experience,

:17:44. > :17:47.hopefully I will have a better opportunity than four years ago. Was

:17:48. > :17:52.London something you had to get over? Yes. It should have been an

:17:53. > :17:56.amazing experience, and instead I got injured a few weeks before, and

:17:57. > :18:03.it was a mad rush to even get to the start line. It was hard to enjoy it.

:18:04. > :18:06.I tried to make the most of it. When it comes to your event on the track,

:18:07. > :18:13.who do you look to to be the main opposition? The Kenyans are very

:18:14. > :18:18.strong. I have Laura Weightman and Laura Muir going for Scotland. As

:18:19. > :18:23.usual, the women's 1500 is loaded. With Laura Muir particularly, on a

:18:24. > :18:31.Scottish track Tom that could be one of the must see events for a home

:18:32. > :18:33.crowd. It is. The local cloud our knowledgeable -- the local crowd are

:18:34. > :18:43.knowledgeable about her. It could be a really good dynamic. Do you go

:18:44. > :18:49.public and say, I want to win that event? I don't need to. It is

:18:50. > :18:53.something I have learned from Kelly Holmes, one step at a time. I am not

:18:54. > :18:56.even in the final yet, and it is naive and dangerous to talk about

:18:57. > :19:01.medals when you are not even in that race. The first hurdle was

:19:02. > :19:05.qualifying for the championships. The next goal is the heats on

:19:06. > :19:13.Monday. I am motivated to finish well in every race I do.

:19:14. > :19:20.The delightful Hannah England. One of my favourites. As Martyn Rooney

:19:21. > :19:28.was one of your favourites. He was good. It was back to what I remember

:19:29. > :19:30.of Martyn Rooney at his best. He was competitive and aware of the

:19:31. > :19:36.situation around him. He looked good and sounded confident. Hannah

:19:37. > :19:41.England is out on the track now. The first heat of these 1500m. Steve

:19:42. > :19:47.Cram is calling this one. Thank you, Jonathan. Two of

:19:48. > :19:48.Britain's finest middle-distance runners, Hannah England and Laura

:19:49. > :20:02.Muir. There runners, Hannah England and Laura

:20:03. > :20:04.which was a shock to a lot of the athletes. There were a few

:20:05. > :20:11.withdrawals. The first heat has only athletes. There were a few

:20:12. > :20:24.got eight athletes. Four go through from each of the two heat is, and

:20:25. > :20:27.four fastest losers. Sifuentes won a bronze medal at the world indoor

:20:28. > :20:36.Championships. She has followed it up with a good outdoor season. So

:20:37. > :20:44.she, the two British athletes and Helen Obiri, of course, the Kenyans

:20:45. > :20:50.are so strong, maybe the favourites. The women's 1500 is a high standard

:20:51. > :21:04.competition, with five or six women in contention for medals. But the

:21:05. > :21:13.first job is to qualify. Laura Muir broke the Scottish record recently

:21:14. > :21:18.in Paris, just outside four minutes. So, it is a very good morning. A

:21:19. > :21:23.late alarm call for Paula Radcliffe. Should not have to come in two early

:21:24. > :21:29.this morning, although I did see her running. Paula, they will just want

:21:30. > :21:33.to get through safely? Exactly. As Hannah was saying, the most

:21:34. > :21:33.important thing is just to run this race as well as

:21:34. > :21:42.important thing is just to run this make sure you are in that final.

:21:43. > :21:47.important thing is just to run this conditions. The first four from each

:21:48. > :21:53.heat, plus the four fastest losers. So out of the 17 runners, we are

:21:54. > :21:58.only eliminating five athletes. It is about keeping ahead, staying out

:21:59. > :22:02.of trouble. In the second heat, it will be interesting to see if they

:22:03. > :22:07.took advantage of the fact that they will know the times that have an run

:22:08. > :22:14.by the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth runners in this race and will

:22:15. > :22:18.know what they are shooting for. Sifuentes goes to the front with

:22:19. > :22:21.Nicky Hamblin, born in the UK but competing for New Zealand. Yes,

:22:22. > :22:25.Nicky Hamblin picked up medals at competing for New Zealand. Yes,

:22:26. > :22:30.the last Commonwealth Games and had a brilliant time in Delhi. She has

:22:31. > :22:37.not followed that too well, but is not having a bad season. Sifuentes

:22:38. > :22:41.and Hamblin probably looked at Hannah England and were worried

:22:42. > :22:44.about a top four finish. They would have thought, let's not just hand

:22:45. > :22:49.eight places to the second heat. have thought, let's not just hand

:22:50. > :22:59.Let's make it a reasonable race. Having said that, Sifuentes has now

:23:00. > :23:03.slowed down after that solid first lap. Yes, Sifuentes was Robert Lee

:23:04. > :23:07.hoping that by going to the front and leading at a reasonable pace,

:23:08. > :23:12.somebody might come through and take it on on the second lap, but no one

:23:13. > :23:20.seems keen to do that. Now Laura Muir starts to move a bit wide and

:23:21. > :23:26.get herself in position. Hannah England is looking comfortable. She

:23:27. > :23:31.has been a bit frustrated with how slow her season has been to get

:23:32. > :23:36.started. I know she feels she is coming into good shape. She has been

:23:37. > :23:49.doing good training in the parent needs. -- in the Pyrenees. The gold

:23:50. > :23:59.medal favourite, Helen Obiri of Kenya, stays at the front. The pace

:24:00. > :24:05.is not that slow. For a lot of these athletes, this is not too far from

:24:06. > :24:07.personal best shape. Laura Muir and Hannah England might have thought

:24:08. > :24:13.something easier might have been before them for this first-round

:24:14. > :24:20.heat, but Helen Obiri gets them to the bell in just over three minutes.

:24:21. > :24:24.That is a really quick pace. The second heat will know what they are

:24:25. > :24:28.aiming for, but now it turns into a race. You could almost threw a

:24:29. > :24:36.blanket over the first group in this, just one athlete starting to

:24:37. > :24:43.tail at the back. Hannah looks comfortable, but I would like to see

:24:44. > :24:50.her move more and stay in contact. Hannah England on the outside. Only

:24:51. > :24:56.four of these will qualify. Is going to be a bit of a sprint here. It

:24:57. > :25:03.will be a quick first heat. Helen Obiri, kicking from the front. Nicky

:25:04. > :25:10.Hamblin going well. Laura Muir knows she has got to get in the top four.

:25:11. > :25:13.The four are just moving away. Helen Obiri, Nicky Hamblin, Laura Muir and

:25:14. > :25:19.Hannah England struggling a bit. Obiri, Nicky Hamblin, Laura Muir and

:25:20. > :25:27.Duncan finishing quick Lee. -- quickly. Well, well, well. We were

:25:28. > :25:34.thinking we would see a dawdle here. What we got was a pretty quick

:25:35. > :25:37.first heat of the 1500m. That will give the second heat something to

:25:38. > :25:45.think about, because six athletes ran fast. Hannah England had to be

:25:46. > :25:59.aware. I am not sure she was relaxing down that home straight.

:26:00. > :26:03.Nicky Hamblin got herself in a great position, came past Laura Muir, who

:26:04. > :26:08.was starting to panic a bit and realising that she would have to use

:26:09. > :26:15.the finish you wanted to save for the final. The two Australian

:26:16. > :26:19.athletes were fighting. They could see Hannah England in their sights

:26:20. > :26:29.and knew they had to keep running, because that time would count as the

:26:30. > :26:35.fastest loser. Well, Obiri looked the most comfortable. Let's see what

:26:36. > :26:40.Laura Muir and Hannah England thought. Yes, both home nations

:26:41. > :26:44.entrants are here. The commander 's performance from you both to make it

:26:45. > :26:48.into the final. Laura, as you are running around and the noise is so

:26:49. > :26:57.incredible and seeing so many Scottish flags, are you aware of

:26:58. > :27:06.it's yet, it is amazing. All the flags here. A gutsy performance as

:27:07. > :27:15.always from you, and a decent pace. I was quick. It was a matter of

:27:16. > :27:20.getting round as comfortably as possible and saving energy for

:27:21. > :27:24.tomorrow. Hannah, you qualified as well. How tough was it as a heat

:27:25. > :27:34.goes? You have experience on the world stage. It was good. Like Laura

:27:35. > :27:39.said, it was an amazing atmosphere. It is a relief when Nicole went out

:27:40. > :27:44.fast. It is nerve-wracking being in the first heat. But it is good that

:27:45. > :28:24.it was fast. Well done to you both. As Steve was saying in commentary,

:28:25. > :28:27.it was a lot faster than anybody anticipated. For those athletes

:28:28. > :28:33.going in the second heat, it gives them something to think about. Steve

:28:34. > :28:38.Cram is going to take off his commentary hat and put on his

:28:39. > :28:43.coach's hat. One of those athletes in the second, you have got your

:28:44. > :28:52.commentary hat off? What is she thinking? She is probably less

:28:53. > :28:58.nervous than I am now. Obviously, for all of the athletes from the

:28:59. > :29:03.home nations, the two Laura 's are ranked three and four in the

:29:04. > :29:09.Commonwealth behind the two Kenyans. But the heats are always nervous

:29:10. > :29:12.times. This is one of the top quality events of the Commonwealth

:29:13. > :29:15.Games. So although there are only eight in this heat, after what has

:29:16. > :29:19.happened in the first heat, they will have looked at the result and

:29:20. > :29:27.they will be aware. Somebody here will be thinking, I will make sure

:29:28. > :29:33.we run well. That is a good thing. Laura prefers the pace moving along.

:29:34. > :29:38.She tripped in the trials last year. When it is slow, she gets a bit nova

:29:39. > :29:44.'s. And so do I on her behalf -- she gets a bit nervous. So this will

:29:45. > :29:48.make it a lot more straightforward for Laura and all the athletes

:29:49. > :29:56.because there is no cat and mouse? There is not any cat and mouse. The

:29:57. > :30:00.only thing she might be worried about, we are looking forward to

:30:01. > :30:07.seeing the young Ugandan girl who will run against Laura Muir. It is

:30:08. > :30:13.her first serious 1500m, and the Ugandan team have decided to put her

:30:14. > :30:17.in both events. We have never seen her in the 1500m, so it will be

:30:18. > :30:24.curious to see whether she is even able to keep up. So far, she has

:30:25. > :30:27.only run 4.20. I will leave you to your nail-biting. And hand over to

:30:28. > :31:05.Andrew Cotter for the commentary. Again, knowing what time they have

:31:06. > :31:18.to go for, knowing they have to get a quick time to get through as a

:31:19. > :31:22.fastest loser. We are not losing too many, but also so things can happen.

:31:23. > :31:27.Laura Weightman, who is one of the class athletes here, will want to

:31:28. > :31:28.stay out of trouble. All of these athletes are looking for a fairly

:31:29. > :31:42.brisk pace. In this heat, they should have

:31:43. > :31:48.information before they came out onto the track with the results of

:31:49. > :31:51.heat ones so they know the time they are aiming for. It comes down to

:31:52. > :31:54.whether there is somebody who is willing to take it on and if there

:31:55. > :32:00.is a front runner who wants to keep the pace, or are they all going to

:32:01. > :32:12.sit around looking at each other? It looks as if it is moving along at

:32:13. > :32:19.sit around looking at each other? It mentioned. She is going to run the

:32:20. > :32:24.800m and I hope she will still be there. She is a rising star

:32:25. > :32:28.middle-distance running. But Zoe Buckman out in front at the moment.

:32:29. > :32:38.She wants to ensure the pace remains.

:32:39. > :32:43.The Kenyan challenge is very strong in this event. Laura Weightman in a

:32:44. > :32:50.decent position at the in this event. Laura Weightman in a

:32:51. > :32:55.looking very comfortable. England are very well represented in the

:32:56. > :33:01.800m so she is not running that one. That will be fascinating. The

:33:02. > :33:03.1500m, despite the lack of huge numbers competing in it, is of very

:33:04. > :33:18.high quality. Extremely high-quality from the British athletes here.

:33:19. > :33:20.Laura Weightman will be disappointed not to abduct under four minutes but

:33:21. > :33:27.I think that will come with not to abduct under four minutes but

:33:28. > :33:34.confidence this year. Stronger than I've ever seen her but it isn't

:33:35. > :33:39.translating into races so far. Four go through automatically and in the

:33:40. > :33:51.first team, they were through to the bail in about 3.01 minutes.

:33:52. > :33:57.The pace list is a little bit. Laura Weightman moving up into third

:33:58. > :34:11.position. Sorry but I just got a little clip

:34:12. > :34:23.and had to re-steady herself and gather herself.

:34:24. > :34:34.Laura Weightman looked to move up the shoulder of her Kenyan opponent.

:34:35. > :34:39.The Canadian champion is in second place at the moment. Zoe Buckman and

:34:40. > :34:45.Laura Weightman will have to make a move just now around the outside.

:34:46. > :34:49.Plenty of running in the legs of Laura Weightman at the moment. A big

:34:50. > :34:58.gap between the top two and the rest.

:34:59. > :35:08.Laura Weightman easing into third place. It's going to be a very

:35:09. > :35:17.comfortable win for faith keep you. Laura Weightman in third and that is

:35:18. > :35:26.automatic qualifying for all the fastest losers, I think, from the

:35:27. > :35:34.first team. A good win and Laura Weightman does move through. There

:35:35. > :35:39.is Laura Weightman, comfortably qualifying in the end, but she will

:35:40. > :35:45.have had a feeling nervous, shooting through their system. That little

:35:46. > :35:49.jostle really shook her up and at that stage, the Kenyan was going

:35:50. > :35:56.backwards and she took advantage of that to go through the outside. The

:35:57. > :35:59.Canadian runner was probably the surprise package in how well she

:36:00. > :36:07.ran, although she did win the Canadian Championships. I think

:36:08. > :36:15.Laura probably knew that she had Jemma Simpson on her shoulder. She

:36:16. > :36:26.was shooting for it, trying to get past. We might find that Jemma

:36:27. > :36:35.Simpson does go through as the fourth fastest loser. She is running

:36:36. > :36:38.hard. I think we can confirm Sipson has gone through as one of the

:36:39. > :36:39.fastest losers but Laura Weightman through as an automatic qualifier

:36:40. > :36:48.and she is talking to fill now. You got through nicely in the end

:36:49. > :36:51.that there was a point where there was a stumble ahead of you and you

:36:52. > :36:58.had to negotiate a tricky situation and you did it well. Everyone was

:36:59. > :37:02.getting a bit too close and I could tell faith wanted out and I was

:37:03. > :37:06.trying to get past the other Kenyan girl so I was trying not to panic

:37:07. > :37:11.and I knew that my time would come and I wanted to wait as long as

:37:12. > :37:14.possible and not make too many surges. I'm pleased to get the

:37:15. > :37:19.qualification out of the way so I can focus on the final. Give us an

:37:20. > :37:23.insight into the mindset when you are starting a race like that. One

:37:24. > :37:30.had already gone and it was pretty fast. Do you think that it is top

:37:31. > :37:34.for nothing? We were in the tunnel and the first one was quite quick

:37:35. > :37:38.and I didn't expect that so for me, coming out in the second heat, I

:37:39. > :37:41.wanted to do none of the work myself and see what the other girls do and

:37:42. > :37:46.I knew I could rely on my strength at the end if someone was ahead of

:37:47. > :37:48.me and I would need to get that automatic place. You've got it and

:37:49. > :37:58.we'll see you in the final. Satisfied athlete, satisfied coach

:37:59. > :38:02.sitting beside me. The second heat not as quick as the first but a very

:38:03. > :38:10.impressive run from the Kenyan winner. Jemma Simpson does go

:38:11. > :38:17.through as one of the fastest losers.

:38:18. > :38:24.What that means over the two leads is that we didn't lose too many

:38:25. > :38:26.athletes. Winnie Nanyondo did not start so we had only 16 runners and

:38:27. > :38:41.only five of them going through. A bit further down, we find all the

:38:42. > :38:58.home athletes through. Back to the men's hammer. We've seen

:38:59. > :39:02.one Englishman go beyond automatic qualification, Alex Smith. This is

:39:03. > :39:14.Nick Miller and it is his third attempt. He needs a big improvement.

:39:15. > :39:24.More than 70m would be... Well, there it is. It is beyond 70m. The

:39:25. > :39:29.yellow line was beyond 70. He joins Alex Smith. He needed all three of

:39:30. > :39:34.his qualifying throws. Good technique, very clean, tidy.

:39:35. > :39:36.Surprised it needed three attempts but he does proceed to the final

:39:37. > :39:52.tomorrow. 72.76m. The high jumpers have left the

:39:53. > :39:59.stadium and it was 2.20m that was needed to sort them out. 13 athletes

:40:00. > :40:05.went clear at 2.16m. They thought they would drop one of them but they

:40:06. > :40:08.all went clear at 2.20m and they decided they'd had enough and they

:40:09. > :40:16.left, so they all go through to the final. That is on Wednesday.

:40:17. > :40:27.STEVE CRAM: Let's tidy up some of the qualification scenarios from

:40:28. > :40:39.earlier. That should be a great race between Isaac Makwala and Kirani

:40:40. > :40:49.James. Chris Brown will be a threat. A very good quality event, the

:40:50. > :41:04.men's 400m. 26 through to tomorrow's semifinal.

:41:05. > :41:14.After two events in the decathlon, we're on script. Damian Warner, who

:41:15. > :41:15.is the favourite to take the title. World bronze medallist, fifth in the

:41:16. > :41:32.Olympics, leads the way. Well, we've got a big medal ceremony

:41:33. > :41:43.and this crowd will enjoy this. Well, we've got a big medal ceremony

:41:44. > :41:53.was a good competition earlier on. It was a combined event. It was

:41:54. > :42:03.about points and it came right down to the wire between Daniel Greaves

:42:04. > :42:13.and Eleanor Davies. But it is Richard Orchid by the Nigeria

:42:14. > :42:31.A good tussle between Aled, completing for Wales. -- competing.

:42:32. > :42:34.But it was Daniel Greaves who is waiting to take gold, take his well

:42:35. > :43:00.earned gold. Representing England, Daniel

:43:01. > :43:06.Greaves. I wonder what that will mean to Dan to hear the words

:43:07. > :43:10."Commonwealth champion for distance".

:43:11. > :43:14."Commonwealth champion for settle in and then unleashed his

:43:15. > :43:20.best throw halfway through the competition to sneak ahead of the

:43:21. > :43:24.best throw halfway through the Welsh man. He medalled at the last

:43:25. > :43:31.four Paralympic Games and experience was everything today. Great scenes.

:43:32. > :43:37.Well done, Dan Greaves. Enjoy your moment. Ladies and gentlemen, the

:43:38. > :45:01.national anthem of England. WHAT A MARVELLOUS MOMENT FOR DANIEL

:45:02. > :45:13.GREAVES, ENGLAND'S FIRST GOLD MEDAL HERE IN HAMPDEN PARK.

:45:14. > :45:18.JONATHAN EDWARDS: It has been a great morning, a full house here at

:45:19. > :45:23.Hampden Park. We are just about done here on BBC One. Thanks to Denise

:45:24. > :45:26.and Colin, who will be back again soon. It is the men's and

:45:27. > :45:32.and Colin, who will be back again soon. It is the men's women's 100m

:45:33. > :45:36.finals. But now back to Ore Oduba. A busy morning and a great day so

:45:37. > :45:44.far on day five of the Commonwealth Games. I'm joined by Jason Mohammad.

:45:45. > :45:48.Hello. That moment seeing Dan Greaves on the top step of the

:45:49. > :45:53.medals board for discus. I know we're supposed to be impartial so

:45:54. > :45:57.you've got to feel for Aled Davies. I interviewed him a few weeks ago

:45:58. > :46:02.and he was very much looking forward to being the captain of Wales. He

:46:03. > :46:06.will be very disappointed with that. Over to you, but evil stop the

:46:07. > :46:08.pattern is in your hands. Thank you very much to Ore Oduba.

:46:09. > :46:27.This is what is coming up: women's squash.

:46:28. > :46:32.And Nick Matthew, James Willstrop and Peter Barker are also hoping to

:46:33. > :46:36.make it a one-two-three. And we are loving the boxing right

:46:37. > :46:44.now. The one to watch in the ring today, Northern Ireland take on

:46:45. > :46:48.India in the men's bantamweight. And as ever, lots of sport for you

:46:49. > :46:54.this afternoon. If you fancy some lawn bowls live from Kelvingrove,

:46:55. > :46:57.that is on BBC Three. It is England against Namibia. On the red button,

:46:58. > :47:06.you can pop over to the hockey. Terrific game going on between South

:47:07. > :47:14.Africa and Australia. And every sport is on our website. You can

:47:15. > :47:19.keep up-to-date with the latest news and interviews on the BBC Sport app

:47:20. > :47:24.and on Radio 5 Live. Seven golds to be won at the athletics today. The

:47:25. > :47:30.men's and women's 100m are tonight. But this afternoon, for now, until

:47:31. > :47:42.we break for the news, we will concentrate on the swimming. What a

:47:43. > :47:46.competition so far. The atmosphere is extraordinary! The

:47:47. > :47:53.crowd is on their feet. Hannah Miley wins gold for Scotland. A brilliant

:47:54. > :47:59.swim. Ross Murdoch. Is he going to get the touch? First gold medal to

:48:00. > :48:02.England in the swimming pool. The new Commonwealth champion, Dan

:48:03. > :48:13.Wallace of Scotland. A great swim from Chris Walker-Hebborn. Gold

:48:14. > :48:19.again to Fran Halsall. Looks like it is going to be Seebohm. Adam Peaty

:48:20. > :48:25.of England beat the Olympic champion. Gold to Siobhan-Marie

:48:26. > :48:29.O'Connor. Finally, she has won Commonwealth gold. 13-year-old

:48:30. > :48:35.Erraid Davies gets a bronze. Utterly brilliant.

:48:36. > :48:39.Some great moments from Glasgow 2014 in the pool. Rebecca Adlington has

:48:40. > :48:46.made her way from Tollcross to this lovely studio on the banks of the

:48:47. > :48:53.River Clyde. What is your assessment of the swimming so far? It has been

:48:54. > :48:55.incredible. Everyone coming into the Commonwealth Games probably thought

:48:56. > :49:00.the Aussies were going to dominate. And they have obviously done well.

:49:01. > :49:07.They have got 38 medals in total, but us ASEAN are only trailing on 31

:49:08. > :49:12.medals -- is British guys. It is neck and neck. They have put in so

:49:13. > :49:17.many incredible performances. I have an impressed by the amount of young

:49:18. > :49:21.swimmers coming through. These guys will be the ones on the podium in

:49:22. > :49:27.Rio, hopefully. It is nice to get to know them. And seeing them post

:49:28. > :49:32.world-class times, everyone has been going, but the Americans are not

:49:33. > :49:39.here, or the Chinese. But we are still posting world-class times. We

:49:40. > :49:44.have so many number one or very highly ranked swimmers. Talking of

:49:45. > :49:48.Ross Murdoch, in the build-up to these games, everyone was talking

:49:49. > :49:55.about Michael Jamieson after his success in London 2012. But Scotland

:49:56. > :50:02.and Team GB now have a fantastic prospect. You have to feel for

:50:03. > :50:07.Michael Jamieson. He was the poster boy. Unfortunately, he did not quite

:50:08. > :50:11.get the result he wanted. But men's breaststroke as a whole is

:50:12. > :50:15.incredible. Ross Murdoch, Adam Peaty. You have four guys ranked in

:50:16. > :50:23.the top ten in the world over the 200m rest stroke. -- breaststroke.

:50:24. > :50:26.Only two people can make the team for Great Britain in Rio am so it

:50:27. > :50:32.will be tough. They are going to push each other every time they step

:50:33. > :50:37.up at the nationals. It is great competition, but Ross has acted so

:50:38. > :50:43.professionally. I have been blown away by how much camaraderie there

:50:44. > :50:49.is between Adam Peaty and himself. They are happy for each other. What

:50:50. > :50:54.is it about swimming? I was watching this in my hotel room, and I saw

:50:55. > :50:58.Adam in the pool and I saw you afterwards when the camera cut back

:50:59. > :51:04.to you. Clare was talking about the tears rolling down your face. Why

:51:05. > :51:07.was it so emotional for you? I know! The first time I have cried on live

:51:08. > :51:13.television. The thing I love about Adam is that he is from a club

:51:14. > :51:16.background. So many people talk about performance centres and that

:51:17. > :51:20.you need this and this. Adam just trains in a local pool. He and his

:51:21. > :51:27.coach have been together six years. It is kind of how I was with my

:51:28. > :51:34.coach. They have worked together as a team. Adam has so much more room

:51:35. > :51:39.for improvement. If he went to a 50m pool, what difference could that

:51:40. > :51:44.make? Introduce more sports science, physio, nutrition. He has

:51:45. > :51:49.such a bright future. It was such an intelligent race from a 19-year-old.

:51:50. > :51:56.He was not scared by the world record-holder. He was like, I am

:51:57. > :52:00.going to take you on. He has a bright future and you have a busy

:52:01. > :52:02.night tonight. These are the finals this evening. It is going to be

:52:03. > :52:20.eight cracking night. I have been talking to Jazz Carlin a

:52:21. > :52:24.lot since 2006, and I know how disappointed she was to miss out on

:52:25. > :52:30.London 2012. What have you made of the way she has fought back? Jazz is

:52:31. > :52:37.lovely. I have been lucky enough to race against her. Obviously, she had

:52:38. > :52:41.a disappointing 2012 I missing out on the Olympics, but I love her

:52:42. > :52:46.attitude. She was like, this is the first time I am getting a home crowd

:52:47. > :52:49.and I am loving it. You need that resilience as an athlete. I think

:52:50. > :52:57.now is her time. Everything happens for a reason, I think, and with Jazz

:52:58. > :53:04.Carlin, it has made her stronger. You learn more from bad times. She

:53:05. > :53:09.learned that from the World Championships last year. She was

:53:10. > :53:14.posting incredible times and did not quite get a result in the World

:53:15. > :53:19.Championships. Now is her time. She has learned how to race and be

:53:20. > :53:24.strong mentally. Everyone talks about their physical shape, but not

:53:25. > :53:28.how much the mental side of things really affects athletes. I used a

:53:29. > :53:33.sports psychologist. I know Fran Halsall is using one as well. So

:53:34. > :53:37.many athletes are learning that it is about mental strength as well.

:53:38. > :53:42.Jazz is showing that. I know how hard she has worked. Let's look at

:53:43. > :53:52.her breaking the Commonwealth Games world record yesterday.

:53:53. > :54:02.Does she have to be this fast in the heats? Well, the finals are not

:54:03. > :54:09.tonight. They have 24 hours. If you are doing 100,000 metres a week,

:54:10. > :54:13.this is not going to tax you. Maybe she wanted to show what she has got,

:54:14. > :54:19.frighten the rest of the field and prove to herself that she is capable

:54:20. > :54:23.of a gold medal. Tomorrow night, here is one to watch. I wanted to

:54:24. > :54:28.put in a good heat swim this morning. I have been waiting around

:54:29. > :54:33.a couple of days to swim my main events. I have in training hard. I

:54:34. > :54:42.know I can recover, ready events. I have in training hard. I

:54:43. > :54:46.race tomorrow. Missing out on London, I have not experienced a

:54:47. > :54:47.home crowd like this before, so it is a special feeling and I can't

:54:48. > :54:54.wait for tomorrow night. Let's look at Fran Halsall

:54:55. > :55:04.yesterday, winning yet Let's look at Fran Halsall

:55:05. > :55:07.for England. The final of the women's 50m butterfly at the

:55:08. > :55:16.Commonwealth Games. Fastest qualifier Fran Halsall has a very

:55:17. > :55:23.good start. Going with her is Arianna Vanderpool Wallace of the

:55:24. > :55:31.Bahamas. Fran Halsall looks good. Fran Halsall looks like she is going

:55:32. > :55:37.to get it. Another Commonwealth record. It is gold again to England,

:55:38. > :55:41.and gold again to Fran Halsall. What a double. The 50 freestyle, and now

:55:42. > :55:48.the 50 fly. When you look at the success the

:55:49. > :55:54.British swimmers have had, there may be people watching and thinking, OK,

:55:55. > :55:57.British swimming is in a good place. There was a lot of

:55:58. > :56:05.soul-searching after the Olympics. Do you think something has changed?

:56:06. > :56:09.Definitely. Obviously, London was quite disappointing. For a lot of

:56:10. > :56:13.athletes, Fran being one of them, she the she was going to get a lot

:56:14. > :56:20.of medals and fell short. At the World Championships, only Fran

:56:21. > :56:24.Halsall delivered a medal in the 50m butterfly. There has been a massive

:56:25. > :56:26.change, a new coach and a new performance director. A lot of

:56:27. > :56:31.athletes retired as well, myself being one of them, to let the new

:56:32. > :56:35.generation come through. I know a lot of people say I am only 25, you

:56:36. > :56:42.have to make way for the younger athletes. Siobhan-Marie O'Connor,

:56:43. > :56:50.Adam Peaty, they are all 16, 17, 18. They are all under 20. Some are

:56:51. > :56:56.a bit older like Liam Tancock and Fran Halsall, but swimming is in a

:56:57. > :57:01.great position and the real test will be next year at the World

:57:02. > :57:05.Championships, when we are next to literally world record holders. But

:57:06. > :57:11.the ultimate test will be the Rio Olympics. Yes. Next year, if they

:57:12. > :57:18.can get a good Championships, it will be a great place for Rio. It is

:57:19. > :57:22.about having belief in yourself. Sometimes it is hard to stand next

:57:23. > :57:28.to someone and think, God, how do I beat him? But now we are getting

:57:29. > :57:31.that confidence. I have been impressed with the Scottish swimming

:57:32. > :57:35.team. On paper, they were not meant to be incredible, and they have
