:00:00. > 3:59:59are so many qualities about Nicol, but one of those is that she is
:00:00. > :00:29.incredibly quick and so fit. The full gamut of Williams coming
:00:30. > :00:37.out now. -- the full gamut of brilliance. Absolutely, and always
:00:38. > :00:43.so calm. She just flows around, even when under pressure. She does not
:00:44. > :00:48.get het up about anything. She just says every point as it comes. --
:00:49. > :01:11.plays every point. Exquisite. At she is giving the
:01:12. > :01:16.world number two player a lesson. There is the attacking game that was
:01:17. > :01:17.missing in the first game. Now, every opportunity she is getting,
:01:18. > :02:03.she is going for a winning shot. played well all week, but that was
:02:04. > :02:09.probably the best game that she'd played in this tournament.
:02:10. > :02:22.We can pick up a little of what's being said here.
:02:23. > :02:27.((Inaudible) The Malaysian supporters are make soing much noise
:02:28. > :02:31.it's difficult to pick it up. Lizzie just accentuating what's been going
:02:32. > :02:35.on really. I think just slightly hearing there, saying to Nicol, keep
:02:36. > :02:41.the pressure on, don't let up now. Keep the pressure on. Don't take
:02:42. > :02:50.your foot off the pedal and just keep going as you have done in the
:02:51. > :02:53.second game. For Laura? The tactics seemed right in the first game. But
:02:54. > :02:58.the way that Nicol David was playing in the second game, no-one on earth
:02:59. > :03:01.could live with her. It's hard to find your feet when you're in the
:03:02. > :03:05.midst of that and it's coming as you thick and fast. It's hard to think
:03:06. > :03:10.that quickly. The way she played in the first was, again, we say the
:03:11. > :03:17.same thing, but she's got to get Nicol off the T. She's so dam Nantes
:03:18. > :03:21.from that position -- dominant from that position. You put her at the
:03:22. > :03:25.front of the court when it isn't the right time and you'll be punished.
:03:26. > :03:32.Again, she's just so dangerous from there. For me, Laura has to really
:03:33. > :03:39.focus on the depth of the ball and looking for the opportunity when
:03:40. > :03:43.she's got Nick in the back -- nicol in the back corners. She has to look
:03:44. > :03:53.for the opportunities that aren't so obvious in order to start mixing the
:03:54. > :03:55.game up. In all of women's sport no-one has been as dominant as Nicol
:03:56. > :03:58.David. Eight successive years no-one has been as dominant as Nicol
:03:59. > :04:03.David. Eight successive now as the number one player in the world.
:04:04. > :04:07.Well, it's quite remarkable, when you hear that. She is just
:04:08. > :04:11.incredible. The losses that she's had, she's the kind of player that
:04:12. > :04:16.goes away, sits down with her coach, decides why it went wrong and then
:04:17. > :04:20.she works really hard again to put it right, even though she is the
:04:21. > :04:25.world number one. That's what's special about Nicol. She feels that
:04:26. > :04:38.no matter how good she gets, there's room for improvement. Big roar as
:04:39. > :04:44.Laura Massaro came on court. You do wonder, even if she plays at her
:04:45. > :04:53.very best what she can do to upset this phenomenon that is Nicol David.
:04:54. > :04:57.It is a privilege to be oar and watch her play. -- to be here and
:04:58. > :05:33.watch her play. That's good, that's just the start
:05:34. > :05:52.she wanted. Good attacking squash from Laura.
:05:53. > :06:17.Perfect length. That's what Laura needs to be doing.
:06:18. > :07:12.A positive approach to the start of game number three from Massaro.
:07:13. > :07:18.Incredible defence. Credit to Massaro there. She kept on firing.
:07:19. > :07:34.Absolutely. That's exactly what she's got to do.
:07:35. > :07:44.The other thing about David is she's only 5 '6", but her stretch is a
:07:45. > :08:35.huge stride, she covers the court. She's a great athlete.
:08:36. > :08:40.Again, hugging that side wall. Very difficult for Massaro to get
:08:41. > :08:59.anything out of it. Stroke to David and a little contact
:09:00. > :09:24.there on the face of Laura Massaro. She was asked if she's OK.
:09:25. > :09:30.Involuntary contact. I don't think it was too hard, but
:09:31. > :09:37.definite contact there. David getting the stroke meanwhile.
:09:38. > :09:41.It's always harsh getting a stroke, but when you get caught at the same
:09:42. > :10:00.time, it's not very nice. An opportunity for a little bit more
:10:01. > :10:06.advice. I want to review that decision. She's going to review the
:10:07. > :10:12.decision. A stroke was given to David.
:10:13. > :10:21.APPLAUSE That's some advice that she got from
:10:22. > :10:59.the coach. It's taken a little while to get
:11:00. > :11:04.this under way. Yes, you can see Massaro going to
:11:05. > :11:20.the side, Nicol going backwards. I'm not sure how it can be anything
:11:21. > :11:31.but a stroke. That's for the fourth referee to decide.
:11:32. > :11:38.Showing what a good sportswoman she is, even though she was getting the
:11:39. > :11:40.stroke, she came straight across, did Nicol David, to make sure Laura
:11:41. > :11:52.Massaro was OK. I can't see any way this is going to
:11:53. > :12:08.be changed. No more reviews in this game for
:12:09. > :13:12.Laura Massaro. The lead stretches to two for Nicol David.
:13:13. > :13:18.Oh, yes Great shot. Lovely deception. Looked like she was going
:13:19. > :13:25.to go down the wall with it. Massaro totally wrong footed and the
:13:26. > :14:05.lead stretching to three. Again, immaculate length from Nicol
:14:06. > :14:29.David. That's a bad miss. I just think now
:14:30. > :14:33.the writing's on the wall for Laura Massaro. Really not able to get
:14:34. > :14:46.herself into this match at all now. Listen to the roar for Laura
:14:47. > :14:49.Massaro, her best shot of this particular game. That's what she
:14:50. > :14:56.needs to do. That's the shot she needs to look for.
:14:57. > :15:03.And again. You can probably hear her. Letting Nicol David know she's
:15:04. > :15:34.very much in this match. Too quick. She got it with relative
:15:35. > :16:55.ease. She's looking more and more comfortable now.
:16:56. > :17:14.She is saying the ball was down. But Nicol is adamant that it was up.
:17:15. > :17:27.It was up. Was not even close to being down. I think more desperation
:17:28. > :18:25.than the ball actually being down. Her squash playing it safe thing of
:18:26. > :18:30.absolute duty. -- her squash playing is a thing of absolute beauty.
:18:31. > :18:32.Incredible played by Nicol. That is what she is all about. Just great
:18:33. > :18:51.squash. She has got it. She is the champion
:18:52. > :18:59.again. And right now, she is the champion of champions. Her
:19:00. > :19:17.illustrious career just got that little bit better. What a phenomenon
:19:18. > :19:21.she is. She is remarkable. Not only is she a great player, but she is a
:19:22. > :19:26.bubbly the most wonderful ambassador for ace ward anyone could have. --
:19:27. > :19:35.the most wonderful ambassador for ace port. Great scenes.
:19:36. > :19:44.And you can't imagine how big she is back home in Malaysia. I guess in
:19:45. > :19:49.the UK, you would think David, and then you might be getting close to
:19:50. > :19:54.how big she is in her own country -- David Beckham, and yet how humble
:19:55. > :19:58.she is. When you talk to her and meet her, if you did not know she
:19:59. > :20:05.was as good at what she does as she is, she is just lovely. She is so
:20:06. > :20:08.lovely to speak to and talk to. And you are right, in Malaysia, she is
:20:09. > :20:14.like a rock star. She's incredibly famous. And after all
:20:15. > :20:19.like a rock star. She's incredibly famous. And after she has achieved,
:20:20. > :20:28.seven world titles, five British opens, she is over the moon.
:20:29. > :20:44.Defended her title. And Malaysian royalty are beaming. Massaro will
:20:45. > :20:48.feel disconsolate. She has not got too much to feel sorry for those of
:20:49. > :20:55.about, because it was the wrong opponent on the wrong day. She did
:20:56. > :21:00.nothing else wrong. Laura, a silver medal. How do you
:21:01. > :21:05.reflect on that performance? Disappointment. You go into these
:21:06. > :21:10.gold medal matches obviously knowing that the worst case is a silver, but
:21:11. > :21:18.you want to go for the gold. Nicol is a champion. She has been world
:21:19. > :21:22.number one for seven years. I feel like I have confidence when I play
:21:23. > :21:27.her, but when she brings out a game like that, it is very difficult to
:21:28. > :21:31.break down. I did not have enough to break her down on the volley. She
:21:32. > :21:35.was in front of me the entire time. The first game was very tight.
:21:36. > :21:40.Perhaps that was a crucial moment that might have gone differently.
:21:41. > :21:43.Absolutely. You can't give Leeds away like that.
:21:44. > :21:54.To their credit, she made me do a lot of work behind her, and that
:21:55. > :21:58.continued in the second game. It is difficult to just think about
:21:59. > :22:02.defending from behind and waiting for your opportunity when she is so
:22:03. > :22:08.quick. So you do something a bit rash. That is what she brings out in
:22:09. > :22:13.all her opponents. To add insult to injury, you got a racket in the face
:22:14. > :22:18.at one point. It just bruised the top of my teeth. It was more shock
:22:19. > :22:22.than anything. It is a noncontact sport, so when I get hit, I panicked
:22:23. > :22:29.a bit. It is fine, just a bit of bruising to the gums. Well done,
:22:30. > :22:34.silver medal. Onto the doubles. Hope early I can go one better in the
:22:35. > :22:38.doubles. HAZEL IRVINE: good afternoon. Laura
:22:39. > :22:45.beat Nicol David at the British Open in May, but could not do it today.
:22:46. > :22:48.As you have heard from the commentary team, she is a phenomenal
:22:49. > :22:52.athlete, Nicol David. The first athlete to defend a Commonwealth
:22:53. > :22:55.title. After tough times in Malaysia, it is a heartening moment
:22:56. > :23:00.for that nation. Well, hello to you. Jason has gone.
:23:01. > :23:07.I am in the chapter the next few hours. Lovely to be with you on
:23:08. > :23:14.another wonderful day in Glasgow. We start with a new word, meaning
:23:15. > :23:18.extremely busy. That has been the situation at all the venues around
:23:19. > :23:24.Glasgow. There was a record number of people at the rugby sevens in
:23:25. > :23:28.Hampden Park last night, when 40,000 people were belting out The
:23:29. > :23:34.Proclaimers' 500 miles and doing a Glaswegian wave, and offering up one
:23:35. > :23:38.support to all of the athletes yesterday and this morning. It
:23:39. > :23:44.really is the won in this part of the world, -- hoachim, in the best
:23:45. > :23:48.sense. And it will be very busy. Across the Clyde in the Hydro this
:23:49. > :23:59.afternoon, it is this art of the artistic gymnastics. And there it an
:24:00. > :24:03.old enemies clash bring. Team GB's men stepped onto the Olympic podium
:24:04. > :24:05.in London. Now team-mates and friends square up against each other
:24:06. > :24:10.in what could be one of the highlights of these games. For
:24:11. > :24:14.squash players, these games are there Olympic. This is the pinnacle
:24:15. > :24:19.of their sport and it is an all England contest in the men's singles
:24:20. > :24:22.for gold. Just as it was in Delhi. Malaysia won five out of six
:24:23. > :24:28.badminton gold in Delhi last time, but can England stop their march in
:24:29. > :24:38.the badminton final? We will head to the Emirates Arena to find out. And
:24:39. > :24:42.on BBC Three, women's hockey. Australia 3-0 up on England right
:24:43. > :24:51.now. Both sides have been unbeaten so far. England had yet to concede a
:24:52. > :24:55.goal until today. Something has got to give, and it is giving in that
:24:56. > :25:02.match so far. And there is more team action on the go. That is in the
:25:03. > :25:07.table tennis, the men's event, England against Singapore. And every
:25:08. > :25:11.moment of every sport is on BBC One, BBC Three or the BBC Sport
:25:12. > :25:18.website. You can also catch up with all of the sport on the iPlayer.
:25:19. > :25:23.We will be going to the start of the artistic gymnastics around five
:25:24. > :25:28.o'clock. We will share the opening exchanges in the company of a woman
:25:29. > :25:33.who is, in essence, the trailblazer for this sport for Team GB
:25:34. > :25:46.throughout the whole of the UK, Beth Tweddle.
:25:47. > :25:55.For me, gymnastics, from the word go, was the closest I was going to
:25:56. > :26:00.get to flying. I was very shy at school, but as soon as I stepped out
:26:01. > :26:09.onto the gymnastics floor, that shyness disappeared and I suddenly
:26:10. > :26:14.came into my own. As a kid, I was a nightmare. I had too much energy. I
:26:15. > :26:19.always wanted to be moving. I did not want to be still and watch TV. I
:26:20. > :26:25.think my mum thought, what are we going to do? We need to channel this
:26:26. > :26:32.energy. I would not say I was naturally talented. I was just
:26:33. > :26:35.willing to work and I loved a challenge. If someone said to me,
:26:36. > :26:47.you will never do that, it was a case of, I will show you I can. For
:26:48. > :26:52.the first year, I just did it for fun and went a couple of times a
:26:53. > :26:56.week. Then the coaches said, we like what we see. We would love her to go
:26:57. > :27:01.through to the elite side of the gym. That was then it became serious
:27:02. > :27:06.and I started doing it five days a week, 20 hours a week. If school was
:27:07. > :27:13.not in the way, I would have been their 24/7, to be honest for top do
:27:14. > :27:19.not miss the chalk. However much you had a shower, it was still in your
:27:20. > :27:24.hands. I was never a kid that dreamt of becoming this big gymnast that
:27:25. > :27:28.would achieve amazing results. I just kept coming through the doors
:27:29. > :27:29.because I kept loving the challenge. Then the result is kept getting
:27:30. > :27:45.better and better. I did the Europeans in April, and
:27:46. > :27:50.then there was the Commonwealth Games throughout the summer of 2002.
:27:51. > :27:55.Obviously, all eyes had been on this. It was in Manchester. It was
:27:56. > :28:03.the closest I would ever get to competing in my hometown. It was a
:28:04. > :28:06.special time. As soon as you walk towards the apparatus and started to
:28:07. > :28:12.go up the steps, the war was unbelievable. -- the raw. We were
:28:13. > :28:18.not used to being high profile. You were not used to people knowing who
:28:19. > :28:21.you were. After the qualification, we walked outside the stadium and
:28:22. > :28:27.there were people screaming your name, asking for autographs. It was
:28:28. > :28:32.a surreal moment. And obviously, that whole competition could not
:28:33. > :28:35.have gone any better for me. The European bronze medallist, Beth
:28:36. > :28:53.Tweddle of England. I remember doing the bare final and
:28:54. > :29:02.as soon as I landed, I had the biggest smile on my face. To come
:29:03. > :29:07.here with two silver medals and a gold medal, I was only 17 and I did
:29:08. > :29:14.not realise how much of an impact that would have. People always ask
:29:15. > :29:21.me to pick one moment from my career that I treasure, and you can't. For
:29:22. > :29:26.me, there are three moments. One was obviously London, because it took me
:29:27. > :29:31.20 years and it was the last moment of my career. It has been a long
:29:32. > :29:36.wait for an Olympic medal. The other was winning the first title in 2006.
:29:37. > :29:41.The third one is the Commonwealth Games. It was a special moment. She
:29:42. > :29:47.has produced many special moments for Great Britain and England. She
:29:48. > :29:50.is a multiple world champion, Olympic medallist and Commonwealth
:29:51. > :29:55.Games champion. So many of following in her footsteps in this sport. We
:29:56. > :29:59.will see her in the studio around five o'clock. Gymnastics has not
:30:00. > :30:06.featured in either of Scotland's previous two Commonwealth Games, so
:30:07. > :30:10.this is a first for the nation. I look forward to seeing the gymnasts
:30:11. > :30:13.later. Going for it at Scotstoun right now in the men's team event in
:30:14. > :30:19.the table tennis, we have England against Singapore. This is based on
:30:20. > :30:24.five matches. First nation to achieve three victories will win the
:30:25. > :30:29.gold medal. Singapore have become a real global force in this sport. Two
:30:30. > :30:32.Olympic medals proves that, and six of their last 11 medals at the
:30:33. > :30:37.Commonwealth Games have come in table tennis. They are not be taken
:30:38. > :30:46.lightly. The Mac is in the men's singles, -- the first match is the
:30:47. > :30:48.men's singles. Paul has achieved a two to one-game advantage. They are
:30:49. > :31:19.currently in Game four. Quite a clever manufacture there.
:31:20. > :31:22.-- move there. As hard as Zhan is trying he can't
:31:23. > :31:42.increase that league. Singaporean squeal from around the
:31:43. > :32:37.campus here at Scotstoun. So the match is tied then. We will
:32:38. > :32:43.be treated to a fifth game in this first and opening singles in this
:32:44. > :32:50.first men's team Gold Medal match. As always, it's going to be the
:32:51. > :33:05.first receive, first attack, which will decide this.
:33:06. > :33:14.He should play with topspin on the ball to stop Jian Zhan moving
:33:15. > :33:19.quickly. Then the backhand topspin and perhaps play the backhand
:33:20. > :33:25.topspin down the parallel to the centre in parts a lot of topspin on
:33:26. > :33:31.the backhand. That could release him to play on the Singapore asking
:33:32. > :33:39.forehand. For the medic then. They want to get some strapping on that
:33:40. > :33:48.powerful right quad. Or hamstring, I'm not sure. Something you're
:33:49. > :33:54.familiar with? I have not known Jian Zhan have any physical problems. On
:33:55. > :33:58.the World Tour, a couple of months ago, he was the runner up in the
:33:59. > :34:03.Philippines. I was with him, saw him play in Sydney Australia. He was
:34:04. > :34:10.runner up in the men's singles then. I saw no injury, the movement looks
:34:11. > :34:16.very good. Maybe that is more preventative than anything.
:34:17. > :34:56.Both men ready then. Terrific, aggressive start from
:34:57. > :35:21.Singapore there. Very good return. I know my opponent
:35:22. > :35:25.is going to be nervous. It's the fifth game, a crucial match. The
:35:26. > :35:34.serve might drift long. That applies to both players.
:35:35. > :35:42.He's just missed one or two forehands with his move around the
:35:43. > :35:52.backhand. Oh, full of intent and arm aloft for
:35:53. > :36:25.Zhan. What a start for him. There's a long way to go but if Paul
:36:26. > :36:28.Drinkhall loses the next point, he will be on his feet for a time now.
:36:29. > :37:07.-- time out. They've called the time out. He has
:37:08. > :37:10.no real choice, actually. He could definitely not leave it one more
:37:11. > :37:14.point. The gap would be just too great. OK, you do come back from
:37:15. > :37:20.these, but nine times out of ten, you don't. Now the job of Alan Cook
:37:21. > :37:26.is to settle his player down and to encourage Paul Drinkhall to attack
:37:27. > :37:30.very quickly on that first ball and give Jian Zhan the minimal time.
:37:31. > :37:34.Perhaps direct the first attack to the centre of the table to the right
:37:35. > :37:39.hip of his opponent and then maybe out to the forehand. As for Jian
:37:40. > :38:47.Zhan, keep that backhand working with the topspin.
:38:48. > :38:55.Backhand for effective. I'm perplexed why
:38:56. > :39:03.Drinkhall served there? I guess it's just important to vary the serve.
:39:04. > :39:14.Jian wise to it and getting round to it and taking the favoured backhand.
:39:15. > :39:17.Now Jian Zhan has got into a nice Litham to his play. -- rhythm to his
:39:18. > :39:27.play. Suddenly, then, a lot to think
:39:28. > :39:42.about. It's going from bad to worse. Singapore two points away from the
:39:43. > :40:27.match. You have to credit the nerves of
:40:28. > :40:31.Jian Zhan today. He's been under control, in the driving seat of this
:40:32. > :40:49.fifth game. Now it's brought up eight match points.
:40:50. > :40:57.Arms aloft from Jian as he converts their opening match into a W for
:40:58. > :41:01.Singapore. Yes advantage Singapore. They are on their way, though
:41:02. > :41:04.there's a long way to go in that contest. It's the best of five
:41:05. > :41:07.matches. Can you keep up to date with it, because it's live on the
:41:08. > :41:12.red button now. We will be keeping you up to date here on BBC One with
:41:13. > :41:15.it, as well. As you probably saw earlier on, there was a significant
:41:16. > :41:23.moment for the host nation Scotland earlier on in the pairs event at
:41:24. > :41:30.Kelvingrove. Paul Foster and Alex Marshall Gold Medallists. Alex
:41:31. > :41:33.claiming his third Commonwealth title and Paul his second. They are
:41:34. > :41:38.the dominant team in pairs bowls. They are the first two to hold the
:41:39. > :41:42.indoor and outdoor world titles concurrently. That is Scotland's
:41:43. > :41:47.12th Gold Medal of these Games. It beats a record golden haul from 2006
:41:48. > :41:48.in Melbourne. So for a record 12th time, the Flower of Scotland about
:41:49. > :43:25.to ring out in Glasgow. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:43:26. > :43:28.Everybody swaying down there. I don't think I've ever seen more
:43:29. > :43:34.people swaying to Flower of Scotland. They were doing it behind
:43:35. > :43:39.the camera as well. Great scenes there and record-breaking scenes
:43:40. > :43:42.created in the pairs bowls today. Doesn't Kelvingrove park look
:43:43. > :43:46.fantastic as well. We are heading soon back to Scotstoun show ground.
:43:47. > :43:51.There it is the men's squash final. We're looking forward to the number
:43:52. > :43:54.one and two in this contest, both Englishmen, but Peter Barker, a
:43:55. > :43:58.third Englishman has claimed the bronze there. I think he's probably
:43:59. > :44:06.cooled down after his efforts. He's with Sir Matt pin sent now.
:44:07. > :44:10.-- Sir Matt Pinsent now. We're at Scotstoun for the final of
:44:11. > :44:14.the men's singles squash. Peter Barker bronze medal from the singles
:44:15. > :44:22.40 minutes ago. What can we expect from this final? This is huge.
:44:23. > :44:26.Hopefully a very, very good match. They're long-time rivals. You can be
:44:27. > :44:30.assured that they're not going to give each other an inch. Nick is the
:44:31. > :44:36.favourite. I think he's won the last few meetings. Hopefully James can
:44:37. > :44:42.play with a free arm and play some of the shots that we know he can.
:44:43. > :44:45.Maybe cause an upset. I'm going to ask you an unfair question about
:44:46. > :44:49.whether they like each other. Because they've been quite public
:44:50. > :44:52.about the fact that there's genuine animosity here. It's difficult
:44:53. > :44:56.because they're team-mates of yours. I've given you some time to think
:44:57. > :45:01.about it now. They don't really like each other do No, I they? Appreciate
:45:02. > :45:07.that. They're both unbelievably professional. When they represent
:45:08. > :45:14.England, their performances speak for themselves. They're just chalk
:45:15. > :45:21.and cheese. Nick's a very outgoing person, likes to be amongst a lot of
:45:22. > :45:24.people. Whereas James is an ins lar person -- insular person, doesn't
:45:25. > :45:29.enjoy, certainly Nick's company, but would rather be on his There's an
:45:30. > :45:39.own. Anning toll squash which is getting in the -- getting -- there's
:45:40. > :45:43.an anning toll squash which is just part of the game. I'm known for it a
:45:44. > :45:47.little bit as well. Ultimately you're trying to get in front of
:45:48. > :45:51.your opponent. There's a lot of Jockying in the T, a few shoulders,
:45:52. > :45:59.elbows, using your racquet to create that space. That's just part of it.
:46:00. > :46:03.These guys will be professional. There wonts be any animosity on
:46:04. > :46:09.court, as such. Just what is usual, really. Is there an etiquette to the
:46:10. > :46:14.warm up. They're warm be up now. Is there a discipline to that? Or is
:46:15. > :46:15.that a chance to get one over your opponent there as well? Not
:46:16. > :46:26.necessarily. If you don't like your opponent, can
:46:27. > :46:30.you throw your ball up the front of the court, so might see a bit of
:46:31. > :46:34.that. You don't want your opponent getting in too much rhythm. Or they
:46:35. > :46:38.will start the match with that rhythm. You want to hit some rhythm
:46:39. > :46:44.yourself and then disrupt theirs a little bit. This venue is very warm
:46:45. > :46:50.inside, but deliberately so, explain why. Well, I think, for us older
:46:51. > :46:59.guys, that's good. The body stays warm and Supple. But the rallies
:47:00. > :47:03.have been fantastic. It's set a certain humidity and temperature for
:47:04. > :47:09.optimum play. I'm pleased to say often these big arenas don't quite
:47:10. > :47:13.get the balance right. The sweat on the court also, at a certain
:47:14. > :47:24.temperature will evaporate. If it's too cold, the court will become
:47:25. > :47:27.slippery. We have seen the effort from these guys. They are dripping
:47:28. > :47:33.after every game. It is quite humid anyway, but after the first few
:47:34. > :47:37.rallies, they will be ringing the sweat. We have to change our shirts
:47:38. > :47:43.after every game. Headbands, wristbands, everything. Finally,
:47:44. > :47:46.whatever happens in this match, an amazing performance from England in
:47:47. > :47:53.the men's singles, same as Delhi. They sweep at the podium. Thank you.
:47:54. > :47:58.We have worked very hard. The England squash team is an
:47:59. > :48:03.unbelievable team. We are proud to be part of that team. They put a lot
:48:04. > :48:09.of work into us, and hopefully we can repay the favour. Time for the
:48:10. > :48:16.biggest final that squash can offer, Matthew versus Willstrop.
:48:17. > :48:26.HAZEL IRVINE: this is a repeat of the final in Delhi four years ago.
:48:27. > :48:33.Top seed Nick Matthew, defending champion. And James Willstrop from
:48:34. > :48:38.Pontefract. Former world number-1 himself. As the guys have been
:48:39. > :48:45.saying, a bit of needle, but what I contest this should be. Let's enjoy
:48:46. > :48:48.it. These are the three biggest events
:48:49. > :48:54.in our games. All the players agree on that. This is the one they really
:48:55. > :49:00.want to win, but as you say, James Willstrop is so close to winning one
:49:01. > :49:03.of these majors. This is a great opportunity for him. He is obviously
:49:04. > :49:09.going to feel that. Nick Matthew, 34. James Willstrop, 30. You wonder
:49:10. > :49:13.how many more years either of these guys has at the top. Will they be
:49:14. > :49:22.here in four years' time, competing for that medal? There is Malcolm
:49:23. > :49:33.Willstrop, James' father and the man who coaches him. James was born in
:49:34. > :49:36.Norfolk, now lives in Leeds. Talking of great squash minds, Malcolm
:49:37. > :49:42.Willstrop probably has the greatest. Very savvy coach. Also knows how to
:49:43. > :49:47.motivate players. You often have a technical coach and a motivating
:49:48. > :49:51.guy, but to have these aspects in the same coach, very impressive. He
:49:52. > :50:01.has had great results with his players. This is a repeat of the
:50:02. > :50:06.final in Delhi four years ago. James Willstrop never got started then. It
:50:07. > :50:11.was over in three straight games. That's right, it was a 67 minute
:50:12. > :50:15.match. It took a long time for Nick to break James down. I think we will
:50:16. > :50:20.see that again. It is going to be a long match. There is not much to
:50:21. > :50:23.pick between these guys. They both volley unbelievably well. Maybe
:50:24. > :50:32.James has a slightly better touch on the volley. Nick Matthew's speed
:50:33. > :50:36.will tell in this game. He wants to get James Willstrop to the front,
:50:37. > :50:44.play with his footwork and his recovery. But it will take a long
:50:45. > :50:49.time to do that. Willstrop, doing what he did in the semifinal. He has
:50:50. > :50:55.come out on court, and then disappeared on the May for a toilet
:50:56. > :51:00.break. Another keyword is hydration. These guys drink a lot before they
:51:01. > :51:03.start. They are knowledgeable athletes, sensitive to their bodies.
:51:04. > :51:08.They also have a team of experts and nutritionists and psychologists and
:51:09. > :51:13.coaches and supporters around them that look after these players well.
:51:14. > :51:17.Hydration plays a massive part. You want your blood plasma to be at the
:51:18. > :51:20.right level so that when you go on court, your body is operating at
:51:21. > :51:37.maximum efficiency. Nick Matthew takes the support team
:51:38. > :51:42.to extremes. His wife is a psychologist. That would be an
:51:43. > :51:55.interesting dinner table conversation. So, as in the women's
:51:56. > :52:00.final MO the numbers one and two seeds have made it through to the
:52:01. > :52:02.final. Expect a long rallies, a war of attrition here. James Willstrop
:52:03. > :53:29.will begin. Oh, yes. Change of angles from Nick
:53:30. > :53:33.Matthew. Notice the recovery away from the ball. Nick Matthew almost
:53:34. > :53:36.accelerate away from each shot. Very elastic movement. James Willstrop is
:53:37. > :53:58.a bit smoother in his movement. A bit early in the match to go for
:53:59. > :54:02.that? I don't think so. He really wants to get James Willstrop into
:54:03. > :54:08.the front corners of the court. He is able to do that because of that
:54:09. > :54:09.elastic movement. He is so far forward in the middle of the court
:54:10. > :56:00.after every shot he plays. Well, get used to it. You will see
:56:01. > :56:05.with the both of these guys, they use the height of the court so well.
:56:06. > :56:10.They don't force the pace too much. I try to get the ball right in the
:56:11. > :56:11.back corners. You will see the foot speed, the racket speed, and then
:56:12. > :57:34.the attack. There is a threat there. We have not
:57:35. > :57:40.seen James missed many of those shots, but he knows he has to go so
:57:41. > :57:59.close to put the pressure on Nick Matthew.
:58:00. > :58:14.My contact lenses came out. Otherwise I will not be able to
:58:15. > :58:20.see! Brilliant! That would have given James Willstrop a bit of an
:58:21. > :58:28.advantage. The referee asked him to use the force.
:58:29. > :58:38.It was worth a try! Get him back on court with just one contact lens.
:58:39. > :58:55.Well, he has lost to him so many times. That's right. The last time
:58:56. > :58:57.James beat Nick in the PSA, either in the world ranking tournament for
:58:58. > :59:14.the Commonwealth Games, was in December 2007. That is quite a while
:59:15. > :59:21.away. If there is anyone who uses contact lenses, it is something you
:59:22. > :59:38.would rather do in private. It is pretty important that he gets it in
:59:39. > :00:02.without feeling any pain. So, we had the English flags up.
:00:03. > :00:13.Good friends, these two? I think there is a lot of respect. But it is
:00:14. > :00:19.tough to be close friends when you are both competing for the same big
:00:20. > :00:24.prize. You put so much work into it. There has been a little bit of
:00:25. > :00:52.history of tension between these guys. They are both from Yorkshire.
:00:53. > :00:58.Going just for a little bit too much. Trying to force it a bit.
:00:59. > :01:00.Obviously doesn't feel comfortable going long, trying to catch his
:01:01. > :01:00.Obviously doesn't feel comfortable going long, trying to catch owe
:01:01. > :01:53.pponent out. A few errors from both players at
:01:54. > :02:56.the start of this match, a little bit nervy.
:02:57. > :03:04.A wry smile. Very nice use of the lob, both as a
:03:05. > :03:27.defensive shot and an attacking shot.
:03:28. > :03:38.An unusual set of mistakes by James Wilstrop. It's taking a little time
:03:39. > :04:33.to settle into this match. We see Prince Imran from Malaysia.
:04:34. > :04:39.He's a big unit to get around, isn't he, Willstrop? He certainly controls
:04:40. > :04:57.the middle of the court very well. Another mistake in the front court
:04:58. > :05:24.from Willstrop. So this opening game moving quickly
:05:25. > :06:17.away from James Wilstrop. That's the best rally he's played so
:06:18. > :06:21.far James Wilstrop, totally in control. Yeah, absolutely. Just his
:06:22. > :06:26.hold and then that straight punch with his forehand. Then he takes his
:06:27. > :06:31.space, a couple of times here. One of his best shots. If he'd have
:06:32. > :07:07.lost that point, he might have let this game goment
:07:08. > :07:15.That was sporting. Immediately sthau he wasn't able to get it before the
:07:16. > :07:16.second bounce. Great position from James Wilstrop
:07:17. > :08:39.on the backhand side. Amazing reactions from both players.
:08:40. > :08:53.He says he couldn't help but hit him.
:08:54. > :09:00.The ball was going towards the front wall. He wasn't looking for him. The
:09:01. > :09:04.front wall is obviously how the referee's make the criteria. If it's
:09:05. > :09:08.going towards the front wall and you hit your opponent, it's a stroke.
:09:09. > :09:12.Unless you intentionally do it, and then it's dangerous play. That
:09:13. > :09:16.wasn't the case. Not the case in that.
:09:17. > :09:22.In that last rally James Wilstrop found himself in front of Nick
:09:23. > :09:26.Majkova quite a -- Nick Matthew. It's like possession in football,
:09:27. > :09:30.you increase your probability of controlling the game, getting more
:09:31. > :09:34.opportunities in the middle and just causing more frustration from your
:09:35. > :09:41.owe pontent by being -- opponent by being trapped behind.
:09:42. > :09:45.Only been going about 20 minutes but the court is pretty well soaked.
:09:46. > :10:45.Especially the backcourt. That time the drop was perfect.
:10:46. > :10:49.The position in the middle of the court, great position, we see it
:10:50. > :12:57.here. Slightly comes back. A perfect shot.
:12:58. > :13:07.Stroke to Matthew. He's going to appeal.
:13:08. > :13:11.It seemed to me that Matthew was looking for that. Well, I don't know
:13:12. > :13:16.if he was quite in possession of the play, it was a loose shot by James
:13:17. > :13:20.Wilstrop into the middle of the court caused by the tight shot of
:13:21. > :13:23.Nick Matthew. He could have taken it off the back wall, but we go to the
:13:24. > :13:42.appeal judge. Stroke it is. Willstrop not
:13:43. > :14:10.complaining, but it's an important point.
:14:11. > :14:18.It is stroke. Nick Matthew not being able to play the ball in the middle
:14:19. > :14:22.of the court. James Wilstrop tried to fire into the crosscourt with his
:14:23. > :14:26.forehand. It just didn't work. It wasn't far away. The ball was pretty
:14:27. > :14:30.bouncy and it sat up in the middle for Nick to get the stroke.
:14:31. > :14:37.A bit of house keeping. Now a chance for Matthew to take
:14:38. > :15:15.this opening game. He's not out of it. He's invested a
:15:16. > :15:32.lot in this game. He's become increasingly successful.
:15:33. > :15:42.Superb shot. Brave from James Wilstrop, the latter half of this
:15:43. > :16:39.game, since being 8-3 down. He's been the controlling player.
:16:40. > :16:48.Willstrop was plumbing and Matthew with all that he possessed but
:16:49. > :16:58.Matthew holds on. -- coming at Matthew. Matthew Leeds 1-0.
:16:59. > :17:03.That was closely fought and we will be going back very shortly but I
:17:04. > :17:12.bring you news from Carnoustie on the eastern side of Scotland and the
:17:13. > :17:19.shooting. There has been another medal for England. 34-year-old
:17:20. > :17:22.Caroline Pavey taking the bronze against Natalie Rooney of New
:17:23. > :17:23.Zealand. Caroline is a marketing manager and coached by her dad. They
:17:24. > :17:26.train in Derbyshire. She is bronze medallist. They are having a great
:17:27. > :17:34.time as well because they celebrated Adam Peaty's medal in the breast
:17:35. > :17:38.stroke, also from Derbyshire. Have you recovered from the high drama on
:17:39. > :17:47.the range? Yes, thrilled to win the medal. Absolutely thrilled to win a
:17:48. > :17:57.bronze medal. Did you want to win a medal to emulate your father? Is he
:17:58. > :18:03.here? Yes, my dad won gold and silver when the Games were last held
:18:04. > :18:12.here in Scotland. I couldn't be more chuffed. That was so thrilling,
:18:13. > :18:23.going to sudden death. After all of that, it came down to one target
:18:24. > :18:42.which shows how exciting shooting can be. Very tense but thankfully it
:18:43. > :18:55.went in my favour. Natalie shot fantastic. In that semifinal you
:18:56. > :19:07.just missed out for the shoot out to get into the gold medal by one shot,
:19:08. > :19:22.and that is how fine the margins are. Yes, definitely. Every shot
:19:23. > :19:31.counts. Still delighted to get a medal. Many congratulations. Thank
:19:32. > :19:41.you. Further good news for England because in the men's 50 metres
:19:42. > :19:49.rifle, Kemp are has won bronze, the 25-year-old from Croydon. -- Ken
:19:50. > :19:56.Parr. His father won two bronze medals in Kuala Lumpur so talent
:19:57. > :20:00.clearly runs in the family. Caroline Posey won that very tight match.
:20:01. > :20:13.Let's head back to this, where Matthew was not yet quite This is
:20:14. > :20:14.the case with the white ball, it doesn't retain as much heat as the
:20:15. > :20:54.black ball you might play with. Oh, well played. That was obvious
:20:55. > :20:56.strategy from both guys, get in front, hit the drop shot, keep it
:20:57. > :21:47.tight to the wall. No let that time. #12346789 That's
:21:48. > :22:16.James Wilstrop's bread and butter. Willstrop a lot more effective now
:22:17. > :22:25.at the front court than he was. Attack, counterattack and then great
:22:26. > :22:42.touch. He's starting to dominate again.
:22:43. > :23:47.Matthew guessing. Too good. James Wilstrop in that
:23:48. > :23:51.familiar position, where he gets slightly in front on the backhand
:23:52. > :23:54.side, giving himself some space. Shows the straight drive and plays
:23:55. > :24:01.around the angles. This could be a big turning point
:24:02. > :25:02.right here. this second game is really to do
:25:03. > :25:04.with the investment he made in the first game, where he really
:25:05. > :25:43.controlled the second part of that first game.
:25:44. > :25:59.That could be a stroke. Stroke to Matthew. Straight in front. So
:26:00. > :26:26.Matthew now at 3-5 and taking the opening game.
:26:27. > :26:38.It was a risky shot from James Willstrop but sometimes worth going
:26:39. > :26:57.for it to stem the comeback of the player.
:26:58. > :27:07.Stroke to Matthew. He didn't have room to play his shot so another
:27:08. > :27:48.stroke to Matthew. And from 2-5 he is 5-5.
:27:49. > :28:01.Now, there is a lead there. Matthew is appealing because he thinks it
:28:02. > :28:03.should be a stroke. -- let there. It would be unlikely he could even hit
:28:04. > :28:13.the ball with his racket that Pharoah. -- that far up. And he made
:28:14. > :28:19.sure there was contact as he came through just to take the pudding a
:28:20. > :28:20.bit further. The ball had a bit more than I thought. Interesting decision
:28:21. > :28:30.for the referee. Taking some time for the video
:28:31. > :28:54.review to help. It is a let and no stroke. So
:28:55. > :29:18.Matthew has no more video appeals in this game.
:29:19. > :29:29.Wow! Outrageous shot. To concede it, and yet to produce it something
:29:30. > :29:30.else. He kind of lifted his leg to give himself a bit more height on
:29:31. > :29:56.the ball. Great shot. Yes! Another rifle crack from
:29:57. > :30:32.Willstrop and he moves two points clear.
:30:33. > :30:41.Yes. And just as he was at this stage in the opening game, Willstrop
:30:42. > :30:45.in control at the moment. It can he finish it off? He is using angles
:30:46. > :31:04.and dissension here, changing the direction of the ball with his
:31:05. > :31:11.strong wrist. -- deception. Using his phenomenal reach. What a stretch
:31:12. > :31:44.that was from Willstrop. He used all of his six feet four to get there.
:31:45. > :31:48.He was there in position. He would have hoped to have made that shot.
:31:49. > :32:29.That is a tough one. Oh, yes. Would you say at this
:32:30. > :32:36.stage, after what we saw in the first one, that this is a must win
:32:37. > :32:41.game? Absolutely. He can't afford to go two down. He made the investment
:32:42. > :32:46.in the first game and controlled the latter half but then lost that
:32:47. > :32:55.investment. He really needs this. He would lose a lot of spirit if he
:32:56. > :33:03.ends up losing face but he is such a good hustler, Nick. He has got to
:33:04. > :33:11.finishing off. So good. That is going to help. Playing at his best
:33:12. > :33:36.level as he has in the match now. Four game balls.
:33:37. > :33:46.So good. Could be too little too late in this game. Still three game
:33:47. > :34:15.points for Willstrop. Yes. The first shot was not sure and
:34:16. > :34:47.couldn't make the move. Two saved and two more to save.
:34:48. > :34:58.Knowing look from Matthew as if to say,, only a let but just letting
:34:59. > :35:16.him know he was not particularly pleased with that.
:35:17. > :35:23.Matthew hustling but this time to no avail. Willstrop deserved the game
:35:24. > :35:41.and he has got it. It is one all in the men's final.
:35:42. > :35:47.You have got to stay aggressive through the middle. Whatever you do
:35:48. > :35:55.to get the ball past him, watch the wit to his right side. Whatever you
:35:56. > :35:58.do to get the ball around him. Fascinating match. We will get back
:35:59. > :36:05.to this shortly. If Badminton is your bag, then the team gold is up
:36:06. > :36:12.for grabs at the Emirates right now, England against the later. Chris and
:36:13. > :36:17.Gabby Adcock have won the mixed doubles, so 1-0 up. And the England
:36:18. > :36:23.captain is currently involved in singles action. All on BBC Three for
:36:24. > :36:31.you right now. If you preferred that, be our guest and we are going
:36:32. > :36:44.to stick exactly where we are at the squash.
:36:45. > :36:51.front, doing very well in the corners. As we heard from David
:36:52. > :36:56.Campion, the assistant English coach, really just his normal game,
:36:57. > :36:59.which is hold, punch, hold, punch to the back of the court, then have a
:37:00. > :37:04.lot of intent, when he's in the middle of the court to get most of
:37:05. > :37:09.his success going short. We saw that from Nick Matthew. That will down to
:37:10. > :37:16.whoever manages get in front first and have that first attack and the
:37:17. > :37:22.first attack into the p. We saw it from Nick Matthew the rallies of
:37:23. > :37:28.that game. That's going to be the battle here, who can get in front.
:37:29. > :37:34.Who can finish it off. You say hold punch, hold meaning
:37:35. > :37:40.your position? The hold the ball, hold the racquet, you can play the
:37:41. > :37:42.straight shot. Then punch it to the back. Let your guy come forward,
:37:43. > :38:01.make him stop and him go The other thing that is noticeable
:38:02. > :38:06.about Willstrop is he plays the ball very late. It's hard to see where
:38:07. > :38:11.the ball is going to go. Nick Matthew is a master of deception.
:38:12. > :38:51.Every single shot, he shows one shot, plays the other.
:38:52. > :39:12.One of the few unforced errors he's made.
:39:13. > :39:56.Perfect. Let given. Lovely delivery from Matthew.
:39:57. > :40:07.He wanted more. But then he always wants more. He's not going to argue
:40:08. > :40:09.the toss. It was a lovely counterdrop from
:40:10. > :40:27.James Wilstrop. Just above the ten. Those first two games were the first
:40:28. > :40:34.both players have dropped in the tournament so far. Blemish free
:40:35. > :41:02.until the final, but they didn't think this was going to be easy.
:41:03. > :41:21.Phenomenal play. A let given. It was a loose shot from James. The referee
:41:22. > :41:26.saying the ball was almost past him. The straight drive little bit loose.
:41:27. > :41:29.Nick not quite ready to play that He's working shot. The officialers
:41:30. > :42:15.p, isn't he? Wizardry again from James Wilstrop.
:42:16. > :42:20.Great anticipation. He played that backhand drop shot from the back of
:42:21. > :42:25.the court. He knew the counterdrop was going to come. From there, it
:42:26. > :42:45.was over Nick's head. Just great anticipation.
:42:46. > :42:54.No let. Certainly a lot of hugging going on, but it's not out of
:42:55. > :42:58.friendship at the moment. It's always expected when you get two
:42:59. > :43:02.guys that want to control the middle of the court, especially when they
:43:03. > :43:05.play the straight drop shot or volley drop, you are nationally
:43:06. > :43:10.going to be in the way. The player wants to get through to it. The
:43:11. > :43:18.referee plays a big part, as we see here again.
:43:19. > :44:00.Willstrop a huge unit and Matthew not that much smaller.
:44:01. > :44:11.The right shot. Yes, it was. It was nice width from both players. Nick
:44:12. > :44:41.Matthew starting to hit the floor before hitting the side wall.
:44:42. > :44:49.We see the last few rallies, Nick Matthew really controlling the
:44:50. > :44:57.middle. This time, deciding to change the angles. Simple traffic
:44:58. > :45:45.problem, this time with the racquet, play it again.
:45:46. > :45:58.The final shot not good enough, I'm afraid from Willstrop. Matthew
:45:59. > :45:59.really showing us why he's got as high as he is. The number two player
:46:00. > :46:19.in the world. He's more in charge at the moment,
:46:20. > :46:23.than he has been in the match. Better length. Really penning James
:46:24. > :46:53.in at the back corners. So much control with the volley.
:46:54. > :46:58.That is where I get a little confused. He was in position to play
:46:59. > :47:03.a shot. Whether he had enough position to play the right shot, not
:47:04. > :47:07.sure, that he could have played a shot. The basic rule is that you
:47:08. > :47:11.have to give your player space to play the ball, access to the ball
:47:12. > :47:16.and space to play it. If the other player had the ability to play a
:47:17. > :47:21.winning shot, then it is a stroke. The emphasis in this situation is on
:47:22. > :47:23.whether James Willstrop cleared the path enough for Nick Matthew to play
:47:24. > :47:49.the ball. As the game moves on, we are going
:47:50. > :47:55.to see more of that from James Willstrop. He is a very heavy guy,
:47:56. > :47:59.over 90 kilos, six feet four. He can still get to the ball but whether he
:48:00. > :48:05.can recover well enough to clear the ball from his opponent, that is a
:48:06. > :48:11.different matter. Absolutely. That was clear for me but the one before
:48:12. > :48:50.I was not sure about. I am taking your point now.
:48:51. > :49:02.Well played. We are hitting the hour mark now. Do you sense that
:49:03. > :49:07.Willstrop is losing a little bit of sharpness? I think so. He is still
:49:08. > :49:12.getting to the ball but his recovery is not quite as good, as we have
:49:13. > :49:18.seen. That was a very good shot, cleared the space and got into it.
:49:19. > :49:26.But more than that, Nick Matthew is taking advantage of James's is
:49:27. > :49:48.likely -- slight slowness. Well, Willstrop is coming at him
:49:49. > :49:49.now, three points in a row. But is it too late to rescue this third
:49:50. > :50:56.game? Silky smooth. And here are six
:50:57. > :51:05.points for Nick Matthew. -- six game points.
:51:06. > :51:15.Yes, came out too wide. Nick trying to catch out James Down the wall.
:51:16. > :51:17.Normally under pressure when you go crosscourt. Layers tend to read
:51:18. > :51:35.that. -- players. Lovely finish. It needed a response
:51:36. > :51:42.from Nick Matthew after what happened in the second game and he
:51:43. > :51:52.supplied it. And the number one seed is a game away from this
:51:53. > :51:58.Commonwealth Games title. It was pretty emphatic. We saw James
:51:59. > :52:04.slowing down a bit, as we said. His recovery was not as good as it has
:52:05. > :52:10.been. Maybe that is the matchup between these two. Nick Matthew
:52:11. > :52:36.might just be better over Willstrop. hold on the end. That is where you
:52:37. > :52:40.need to go. When he gets in that quick position, off-balance, you
:52:41. > :52:44.push up again. There is no space on the court. Really deep. Absolutely.
:52:45. > :52:58.You know. It is all about the finer details.
:52:59. > :53:09.You can't afford to drop off your length.
:53:10. > :53:16.Not sure how much you picked up of that but it seems to me that he was
:53:17. > :53:20.saying the length is vital. Length is vital and to string together the
:53:21. > :53:25.pressure shots. When he sees that James is struggling a little bit,
:53:26. > :53:30.don't let him back into the rally. Just try to take the next ball
:53:31. > :53:35.early. That will be key to create the space in the court. And what you
:53:36. > :53:41.were talking about them, holding as long as possible. Yes. The longer
:53:42. > :53:44.the match goes on, the more physical it becomes will James Willstrop. It
:53:45. > :53:51.will be hard for him to come forward, then go back and then go
:53:52. > :53:56.back. This is the story of the match a lot of times between these two.
:53:57. > :54:00.That is James Willstrop just slowing down as the match progresses. Nick
:54:01. > :54:05.Matthew still bouncing away. He hasn't controlled much of this
:54:06. > :54:10.match, to be fair, but he is a great hustler and now he has his reward.
:54:11. > :54:20.Willstrop is on the ropes, a bit tired, but can you take advantage?
:54:21. > :54:34.65 minutes we have been going. Nick Matthew 2-1, one game away from
:54:35. > :54:43.defending his title. When of gold in singles and doubles in Delhi --
:54:44. > :55:08.winner. Is there going to be more frustration for James Willstrop?
:55:09. > :55:48.Yes. Razor sharp at the start of this fourth game, Willstrop.
:55:49. > :55:57.Yes, looks like Matthew has come out geared up for what he expects to be
:55:58. > :55:59.a severe test from Willstrop. Very sharp at the start of this fourth
:56:00. > :56:40.game. Tough because it was such a good
:56:41. > :57:25.shot from Willstrop. But he was impeding.
:57:26. > :57:29.sometimes one player prefers to keep the game very cold. If they keep
:57:30. > :57:35.hitting it, it gets warmer, but both guys seem to prefer a ball that is
:57:36. > :57:39.not too bouncy, not too cold. They want to use their movement but also
:57:40. > :57:40.they want to use their own shots, the broad shots in the front
:57:41. > :58:14.corners. So they would do a viewpoint is when
:58:15. > :58:25.the ball is cooler? Just a -- do a few points? Just want to warm the
:58:26. > :58:28.ball up a little bit. It tends to be chaotic if it is very cold, it just
:58:29. > :58:37.goes point-to-point, like that. The point is beginning to pile up
:58:38. > :58:59.for Matthew? Well played. Willstrop stopping the
:59:00. > :59:13.potential run. Three points in a row for Nick
:59:14. > :59:41.Matthew. Again Nick showing the referee that
:59:42. > :59:45.he wanted to get through and he wanted to hit it. James Willstrop is
:59:46. > :59:54.not quite clearing the ball yet again.
:59:55. > :00:39.Well, it wasn't the worst shot in its conception. Unforced error.
:00:40. > :00:42.Those half chances are going to be very important for James Willstrop.
:00:43. > :01:10.He can't afford to make an error at this stage.
:01:11. > :01:22.Interference, just a let. He gets the explanation. I would not
:01:23. > :01:57.say he is content, but he is accepting it.
:01:58. > :02:16.So good! Amazing defence. Showing that straight volley. The most
:02:17. > :03:48.beautiful shot. Again, under pressure early in the
:03:49. > :03:54.rally, amazing speed from Willstrop.
:03:55. > :03:58.He is in good position. When he could be under pressure he is
:03:59. > :04:01.getting up in front and has only got a step or two Mac to attack the next
:04:02. > :04:38.shot. He thought about stopping earlier
:04:39. > :04:46.on, but finally does so them. Nick Matthew, just a little bit off
:04:47. > :04:50.balance. Has not been as decisive as he usually is. It is possible he
:04:51. > :05:08.could be getting tired and frustrated. He had any operation a
:05:09. > :05:21.month ago. -- a knee operation. Just stretching the muscle around it.
:05:22. > :05:32.Very rapid across to that. Better play. Three great pressure shots in
:05:33. > :06:01.a row. Skintight. And now Willstrop with a
:06:02. > :06:37.two Mac point Superb. Great play. Not much pace in
:06:38. > :06:57.that rally, just very accurate. Punching the ball in for a winner.
:06:58. > :07:17.Now then. Is that given? Willstrop, not going to push it. Nicole David.
:07:18. > :08:17.A happy day for her. Gold-medallist in the women's event.
:08:18. > :08:32.Yes! Monster rally! What an incredible rally! Both
:08:33. > :08:49.players running on the diagonals, both sides, phenomenal play. So,
:08:50. > :09:03.Willstrop now, two points from taking us to a deciding game.
:09:04. > :09:12.Maybe that last rally was worth two points. He still has a cushion but
:09:13. > :09:18.does not want to make elementary mistakes like that. Has done a great
:09:19. > :09:46.job keeping the pressure on nick Matthew in this game.
:09:47. > :09:53.Again, perfect delivery from Willstrop who now has four Mac game
:09:54. > :10:31.points. He is just not clearing. He has done
:10:32. > :10:35.that the whole match. The referee saying, well, we know, but the shot
:10:36. > :11:16.was too good. Too good. Now it is a one-game shoot
:11:17. > :11:34.out. The crowd roaring for both players. What a match. He has done
:11:35. > :11:41.so much here that you have too worried it might end up the same
:11:42. > :11:53.way, with him as a runner-up. But he was at his very best then. I have
:11:54. > :11:57.got to say I thought that James Willstrop might have been dead and
:11:58. > :12:03.buried after the third game, he was looking very sluggish. But managed
:12:04. > :12:08.to get in front of Matthew and foremost of that game, Matthew had
:12:09. > :12:13.some opportunities, we saw a couple of chinks in the armour, not really
:12:14. > :12:19.getting his feet in position or his racquet ready, normally a great
:12:20. > :12:25.possible, but it is James Hook came through and sent it to a fifth.
:12:26. > :12:32.Matthew had a minor operation on his knee. How much do you imagine he has
:12:33. > :12:41.been able to train. And is seeking good enough shape to give everything
:12:42. > :12:46.you would want to in fifth game? Obviously after that procedure you
:12:47. > :12:52.need a certain amount of time off. But he only had about a week. He
:12:53. > :12:59.then had squash training and match practice. Will that play a part? It
:13:00. > :13:06.is possible. But both are such great competitors. The momentum is
:13:07. > :13:11.swinging one way then the other. Difficult to predict. James will
:13:12. > :13:13.want to take up but unity is quite as having missed so many in the
:13:14. > :13:38.past. -- opportunities like this. Do not worry about the flick too
:13:39. > :13:42.much. Just get it in. Hitting well. All that he has achieved in his
:13:43. > :13:49.career, it has been formidable, could it be building up to this one
:13:50. > :14:06.game? James Willstrop in this Commonwealth Games final.
:14:07. > :14:13.We just heard David has coach saying, stick it in when you have
:14:14. > :14:18.the opportunity, do not worry about flicking it crosscourt, changing
:14:19. > :14:23.direction, just do the simple things well. What he means by that is the
:14:24. > :14:33.straight drop and the straight volley drop, keep it tight to the
:14:34. > :14:35.wall. After an hour and 25 minutes, the deciding game in this gold medal
:14:36. > :14:49.match. A wonderful little drop shot from
:14:50. > :17:07.Matthew. Took his space. These two are very crisp still. Very
:17:08. > :17:17.impressive start to this game. The ball just a bit colder. Rallies very
:17:18. > :17:18.short right now. And we are seeing a straight volley drop winning most of
:17:19. > :17:48.these rallies. Oh, yes. Millimetre perfect from
:17:49. > :17:53.Matthew. I think all tactics are out the window now. This is just point
:17:54. > :17:55.by point right now. Who gets in front quickest and who manages to
:17:56. > :18:20.stick in the drop. Stroke to Matthew. When it came out
:18:21. > :18:27.awkwardly I think Willstrop must have feared it. We are seeing Nick
:18:28. > :18:28.Matthew's drive and determination. Getting his feet in position better
:18:29. > :18:51.than in the fourth game. An urgent look up from Willstrop. I
:18:52. > :19:08.think he thought it would not be called out but it was eventually.
:19:09. > :19:17.Surprised at that shot? Nick Matthew after he walked away from that
:19:18. > :19:22.position just pointed to the back corner, telling himself, why are you
:19:23. > :19:29.going for that? Just get it to the back corner, take your opportunity,
:19:30. > :20:56.wait for it. Pointing to the back corner.
:20:57. > :21:09.Perfect angle from Matthew. And a good response to this potential
:21:10. > :21:10.threat from Willstrop early on. Did well to manoeuvre himself away from
:21:11. > :21:58.that. He has made so many. You can't
:21:59. > :22:04.criticise him for going for it. It was a good choice of shot and the
:22:05. > :22:07.ball was quite high. Maybe you would have been better being a little bit
:22:08. > :22:21.more patient and waiting for an opportunity.
:22:22. > :23:06.Somebody was using their camera to the side of the court.
:23:07. > :23:16.Going the wrong way. Lucky in a way that it was a let that he was
:23:17. > :23:43.completely fooled. Matthew so far expecting the crosscourt.
:23:44. > :23:54.That is unexpected. Both guys, great opportunities in the last couple of
:23:55. > :23:59.rallies. Nick Matthew had James Willstrop behind him, had it on his
:24:00. > :24:27.racket. Normally a killer shot for Nick.
:24:28. > :24:48.Some interference there. No, there wasn't. No contact. We saw that
:24:49. > :24:54.there was. You are welcome to use the video. Willstrop saying there
:24:55. > :25:03.was no contact but he is not risking a review.
:25:04. > :25:09.Nick Matthew saying that he caught James Willstrop. He did stop before
:25:10. > :25:53.he played his shot. Very tense time for both players.
:25:54. > :26:00.Three errors in the last three rallies. Three points between
:26:01. > :27:14.Matthew and a second successive gold.
:27:15. > :27:27.No! After all that. You can see Matthew pumping his fist for winning
:27:28. > :27:34.that one. Great tussle from both players. These guys still able to
:27:35. > :27:37.run around the court after a very hard-fought match. Really it is just
:27:38. > :27:44.adrenaline and desire driving these guys on now. James Willstrop,
:27:45. > :28:00.normally his go to shots to get points.
:28:01. > :28:10.Yes, stroke, no doubt about it. Matthew has one looked up at the
:28:11. > :28:52.scoreboard to see that he is two points from victory.
:28:53. > :29:03.Stroke to Matthew. He is going to appeal but I wonder if it is because
:29:04. > :29:14.it is towards the end of the match. There is not a lot to lose. Giving
:29:15. > :29:19.the referee every possible chance to give a let. But could he have made
:29:20. > :29:26.Matthew play that ball? The last move towards the wall was very late.
:29:27. > :29:38.Maybe Matthew felt he couldn't play a shot.
:29:39. > :30:36.It is stroke and it is match point. The gold medal point.
:30:37. > :30:47.gold medal goes to the world number two Mac, Nick Matthew. He kisses the
:30:48. > :30:57.knee. Many people thought he would not be here. But what can you say to
:30:58. > :31:05.James Willstrop? It so often in critical matches. Again he is the
:31:06. > :31:15.nearly man. Nick Matthew has won two Mac successive single commonwealth
:31:16. > :31:20.gold medals. Incredible effort to comeback from injury after an
:31:21. > :31:32.operation. Once again, clinches commonwealth gold. The hustle, the
:31:33. > :31:39.desire, the drive, the determination of Nick Matthew, brought him through
:31:40. > :31:48.in the end. Just a couple of points in that fifth game, games
:31:49. > :31:57.Willstrop, his go to shots, they proved to be crucial. Nick Matthew
:31:58. > :32:11.comes away again, gold-medallist. There is his wife. A baby to be
:32:12. > :32:17.born. A very proud mum and dad. Boy, did he have to work for that.
:32:18. > :32:24.Mentally as well as physically, a gruelling match. Absolutely. One of
:32:25. > :32:33.the best performances from him that I have seen in a while. Again, James
:32:34. > :32:43.retaining his title as the nearly man. He needed to win to do justice
:32:44. > :32:49.to his talent, but was up against this man. An incredibly successful
:32:50. > :33:05.player. One of the top athletes in the world over the last ten years.
:33:06. > :33:23.Even time for a photo. But opportunistic young man will go far!
:33:24. > :33:29.A beaming smile. His list of achievements goes on and on. Three
:33:30. > :33:32.times the world open champion. Now a double Commonwealth Games
:33:33. > :33:44.medallist. He was the flag bearer for England
:33:45. > :33:57.and is now very much the standard there for squash. -- standard there.
:33:58. > :34:03.Nick, you have come through with a gold medal.
:34:04. > :34:07.Those who know me know that it is not often I am speechless. But I do
:34:08. > :34:13.not have much to say about that. What a battle. We have had some over
:34:14. > :34:18.the years but I just take my hat off to James. What he has been through
:34:19. > :34:23.in the last few weeks, to help put on a show like that, what a great
:34:24. > :34:30.advert for the teams that have got us here.
:34:31. > :34:35.The momentum was with him earlier. Yes, I was so edgy with my drop
:34:36. > :34:40.shots. It felt like I was playing with a different racquet. He was
:34:41. > :34:47.playing better, I thought, and I was just digging in. The Games that I
:34:48. > :34:54.won, that was a start. If it had stayed level pegging, he would have
:34:55. > :34:59.been favourite. And your coach, Chris, what did he say? Something
:35:00. > :35:05.about getting your opponent to the back of the court all the time?
:35:06. > :35:11.He basically just told me my drop shots were terrible! Told me to
:35:12. > :35:20.resort to old-fashioned, caveman squash. That is what I did.
:35:21. > :35:25.And you're injured knee, what about that support from the medics?
:35:26. > :35:33.Five weeks ago I was just waking up on a hospital bed. Throbbing pain in
:35:34. > :35:40.my body. Just five weeks ago today. How they have done that, Jade, Mark
:35:41. > :35:46.Campbell, Derek, the main people, and everyone who has worked with me,
:35:47. > :35:50.it is just incredible. They need to retire now. They cannot do any
:35:51. > :35:56.better than that. And your wife is expecting a baby,
:35:57. > :36:01.that will change things! Yes, this is the best moment of my
:36:02. > :36:14.life, but I am sure they will be an even better moment to come!
:36:15. > :36:24.Well said, good save! Jamie, flat out at the end.
:36:25. > :36:29.Yes, but seriously no complaints. I am still thrilled with what I have
:36:30. > :36:50.done. It was an awed 56 weeks for both of us. -- odd five or six
:36:51. > :36:58.weeks. I am disappointed, but I am almost not. To have got to where I
:36:59. > :37:02.am, six weeks ago, I was nearly not even playing, just thrilled to be
:37:03. > :37:13.here, and it has been a wonderful experience. You were back in
:37:14. > :37:19.contention by game four. Compare to him there has not been an awful lot
:37:20. > :37:24.of stuff going on, and OK few weeks. So I had stuff left in the tank. But
:37:25. > :37:33.in the fifth, he just one it with squash. I left it all out there. My
:37:34. > :37:40.physio told me to do that. Alison. A quick shout to her.
:37:41. > :37:47.Great stuff. Well done, from all of us.
:37:48. > :37:54.Squash is not in the Olympics, so that really is the sport at the
:37:55. > :38:00.highest possible level. We were thrilled by it in the studio. Time
:38:01. > :38:05.now to cross the River Clyde to the Hydro. We have seen her extra from
:38:06. > :38:14.Frankie Jones in the rhythmic gymnastics. -- heroics. Now the
:38:15. > :39:30.other home nations are itching to get in on the act.
:39:31. > :39:39.They made quite a team together in London but now they go their
:39:40. > :39:57.separate ways. England and Scotland, the fireworks could begin. We are in
:39:58. > :40:03.the company of Beth Tweddle. How is the Hydro suitable for gymnastics?
:40:04. > :40:13.It is incredible. The atmosphere is building. They are really geared up
:40:14. > :40:18.for this. This is the basis of a lot of qualification for the individual
:40:19. > :40:21.all-around, the apparatus, but it will be different this time around,
:40:22. > :40:26.over two Mac days. How will that work?
:40:27. > :40:30.They will do three pieces of apparatus for the men, two Mac for
:40:31. > :40:36.the woman, then come back tomorrow and finish the competition. Mentally
:40:37. > :40:41.it will be very difficult to get yourself prepared for two days of
:40:42. > :40:48.competition. It is like a heptathlon of
:40:49. > :40:53.gymnastics, very strange! Let's see how they get on. Straight into the
:40:54. > :40:59.men's competition. England, Scotland, Canada, in the first
:41:00. > :41:08.rotation. The three best scores will count. Let's get into it in the
:41:09. > :41:14.company of our commentary team. England start with Nile Wilson who
:41:15. > :41:22.has just come from the junior ranks. Here he is. His first senior
:41:23. > :41:30.competition and that is the way you do it. Such a well-controlled
:41:31. > :41:44.gymnast. Double twist, straight front with half term. -- turn.
:41:45. > :41:54.Double Arabian. You can see the landing, so precise. Although a
:41:55. > :41:57.junior, very experienced. But this is his first senior competition and
:41:58. > :42:06.he will want to show everybody he can handle it. A real responsibility
:42:07. > :42:11.on his shoulders to open the team competition for England. A little
:42:12. > :42:20.pause for thought, and that is how you land. He is not finished yet.
:42:21. > :42:29.Now, he knows he must concentrate. A final tumble. Triple twist, not a
:42:30. > :42:33.worry, what classy work. Smooth as you like from the
:42:34. > :42:39.18-year-old. Welcome to the world of senior competition. Just the
:42:40. > :42:54.performance you need, your first man up reducing VAT. That is the way to
:42:55. > :43:00.go, 14 Scotland. Very nicely done. Very good
:43:01. > :43:11.discipline. But he has lost the shape and the
:43:12. > :43:32.handstand. Now he is working. Some sort of control back now but
:43:33. > :43:44.still not as smooth as he would like all stop OK, one and a half twists.
:43:45. > :43:54.Coped well with the blind landing. Over two Zach Clay.
:43:55. > :44:10.What a routine for Nile Wilson. 14.458.
:44:11. > :44:16.Kristian Thomas, next up for England. The pressure is very
:44:17. > :44:31.different, competing against your British team-mates. Into a double
:44:32. > :44:37.Arabian. A tall, powerful gymnast. Has to work hard to stay inside the
:44:38. > :44:42.floor area. That was an uncharacteristic mistake. Kept his
:44:43. > :44:56.hands off the floor, but overcooked it. Read James his composure. And
:44:57. > :45:20.that is lovely. Missing the feet, rolling right out. Very smooth.
:45:21. > :45:27.Plenty of control. He will want to make absolutely sure of this
:45:28. > :45:31.landing. Double Arabian, he does. We have seen that so many times under
:45:32. > :45:42.pressure, but there was a definite mistake in the middle. Moves crept
:45:43. > :45:48.in. -- nerves. But he kept his focus and got through to the end.
:45:49. > :46:25.Daniel Purvis for Scotland. Stand-by a roar. What this stage this is for
:46:26. > :46:34.that medal winner from 2012. Opted to do the handstand in the middle of
:46:35. > :46:36.the routine and got his rhythm back. Lose legs. How did he rescue that
:46:37. > :46:54.swing? Back for the handstand. Some iffy
:46:55. > :47:02.moments there. Yes, but so far, jet for jitter, Kristian Thomas had one
:47:03. > :47:10.so Daniel can have one! -- jitter for jitter. They train together at
:47:11. > :47:15.the national centre most of the time. And there has been a lot of
:47:16. > :47:26.fun in the build-up for this battle. Who will prevail?
:47:27. > :47:38.Kristian Thomas will have that. That will do. Their next gymnast for
:47:39. > :47:42.England, Sam Oldham. He is looking sharp and he has got his eye on that
:47:43. > :47:52.all-around title. This is all about the team as well. A man with focus
:47:53. > :47:56.and a lovely start. Look at the acceleration here. Beautiful floor
:47:57. > :48:15.work. Little helicopter spin as well.
:48:16. > :48:19.Lovely link. Precision in the handstand. This is rhythm and I love
:48:20. > :48:29.that. Double twist and a little hop to the
:48:30. > :49:00.side. Sparkling. Triple twist. Two and seven eighths.
:49:01. > :49:04.But he did sparkle! World-class from the Sam Oldham! That is an
:49:05. > :49:11.invitation to the World Championship final. He would not look out of
:49:12. > :49:22.place on the podium. Daniel Purvis struggled through. 13.6. Another
:49:23. > :49:28.gymnast fresh out of the juniors, Frank Baines. His father is
:49:29. > :49:36.Scottish. Again from that pool of wonderful gymnasts.
:49:37. > :49:49.Reminiscent of the great Hungarian gymnast there. He has missed his
:49:50. > :49:57.grip. That is crucial. Junior and European champion on this piece of
:49:58. > :50:06.apparatus. There is not a lot of room on one handle and you need to
:50:07. > :50:08.be safely on. But it happens. Four up and three to count, so make the
:50:09. > :50:22.most of this experience. Precise hand placement. Technically
:50:23. > :50:26.excellent work. You would expect that from someone who has achieved
:50:27. > :50:32.what he has as a junior on this apparatus. The error was so
:50:33. > :50:40.unfortunate but look at the control in the dismount. This is a young man
:50:41. > :50:44.to watch. We talked earlier about the Commonwealth Games being a great
:50:45. > :50:47.platform for the juniors to come through to the seniors and
:50:48. > :50:53.experience competition with this kind of crowd. It does impact,
:50:54. > :50:57.doesn't it? Definitely. Frank has had some injury this year but he was
:50:58. > :51:08.a junior European champion two years previously, before Nile Watson. --
:51:09. > :51:12.Nile Wilson. A fantastic 15.3 to five, the highest floor score that
:51:13. > :51:16.we have seen today, vital for England and Sam Oldham.
:51:17. > :51:31.Well-deserved. Max Whitlock starts his first of six
:51:32. > :51:43.pieces of apparatus. Unbelievable skill at twisting. So fast and
:51:44. > :51:51.efficient. Three and a half into front somersault with half-turn.
:51:52. > :52:00.Floor and pommel his most impressive pieces. Very good work. Lovely body
:52:01. > :52:29.shape in the handstand as well. He makes twists look easy. He makes
:52:30. > :52:35.the floor look easy to land on. Big triple twist to finish with. Such
:52:36. > :52:46.classy work. England on target for gold. You have called it earlier but
:52:47. > :52:53.you are right, they are on target. This man works with such ease, a
:52:54. > :52:59.lovely laid-back style. Thinking of Nile and Frank. The Commonwealth
:53:00. > :53:09.Games was Max's senior debut. 13.64 Frank Baines. And this man here,
:53:10. > :53:10.Daniel Keatings, he will be making a bid for the pommel horse final
:53:11. > :53:25.here. It is all on this routine. There is nothing in between with
:53:26. > :53:37.him. If he goes through, it will be edge of your seat quality.
:53:38. > :54:08.Big routine. He has done it. But he did it just with a falter in the
:54:09. > :54:14.middle. Good work from Daniel Keatings. He has done enough to book
:54:15. > :54:20.himself a place in the final and Scotland have a chance of a pommel
:54:21. > :54:25.horse medal. You can see in his face that was what he wanted, to give
:54:26. > :54:29.himself the chance to fight for that medal by completing the routine.
:54:30. > :54:36.Yes, obvious loss of form here but it is all right. The judges will
:54:37. > :54:40.still deduct but the deductions against the very great difficulty
:54:41. > :54:50.will make sure he has got a good score. It is kind of forgiveable! He
:54:51. > :54:57.has a lovely style on the pommel horse. Well, that is it. First
:54:58. > :55:02.rotation over. Canada moved to the floor. England move to the pommel
:55:03. > :55:07.horse, where we will see the return of Louis Smith, and then Scotland on
:55:08. > :55:13.rings. Another chance to watch the magic of Max Whitlock. He is one
:55:14. > :55:20.that since 2012 has not rested on his laurels at all. A score of 15.6
:55:21. > :55:25.proves exactly that. Look at the execution, 8.9! He has added to his
:55:26. > :55:37.routines and straight back in the gym for that. Very much so. At South
:55:38. > :55:43.Essex club, coached by Scott. Daniel Keatings, 14.5, that will be enough
:55:44. > :55:49.to put him into the pommel horse final. Looking back, we wind back to
:55:50. > :55:55.the first rotation for all of the gymnasts to give you an idea of how
:55:56. > :56:03.they are doing. Scott Morgan of Canada currently in bronze medal
:56:04. > :56:15.position. Daniel Purvis joint 13th with Frank Baines. One piece of
:56:16. > :56:21.apparatus for everybody. Looking good for the home nations. Yes, and
:56:22. > :56:26.Max Whitlock, two bronze medals from 2012, he is the staff at the whole
:56:27. > :56:30.team, isn't he? He had a great couple of years. In London he won
:56:31. > :56:36.two bronze medals and he was not expecting that one on the pommel
:56:37. > :56:40.horse, but he did it at a world level. He made his senior debut at
:56:41. > :56:45.the Commonwealth Games four years ago, that it shows how the
:56:46. > :56:50.Commonwealth Games catapults them onto their senior career. Yes, and a
:56:51. > :56:57.great performance on the floor. 15.6 as a massive score for anyone to
:56:58. > :57:01.beat. Daniel Keatings, the man competing for Scotland, but he
:57:02. > :57:06.missed out on 2012 because of injury. How crucial could this be
:57:07. > :57:11.for him? Massive. He was devastated when he missed out in London but
:57:12. > :57:16.this is his home Games, representing Scotland, and he wants to do them
:57:17. > :57:18.proud. He will have been nervous because today is the all-important
:57:19. > :57:23.qualification. If he had made a mistake, he would not have got
:57:24. > :57:28.through to the final. He was a bit shaky but he can sort it out for the
:57:29. > :57:31.final. A bit of a wobble but he still has two of his greatest
:57:32. > :57:48.competitors in Max and Louis Smith to come. This will be the final that
:57:49. > :57:50.everybody wants to watch on the men's side. Louis, Max and Daniel
:57:51. > :57:52.Keatings, and they have never competed internationally against
:57:53. > :58:01.each other, so definitely the height of the gymnastics. 12 years ago when
:58:02. > :58:04.you were strutting yourself, at Manchester, success was the
:58:05. > :58:09.exception not the rule and now there is a lot of pressure. Yes, we go to
:58:10. > :58:10.come home with medals, in the Commonwealth Games and on the world
:58:11. > :58:12.stage. come home with medals, in the
:58:13. > :58:16.Commonwealth Games and on the When I was doing biographies of all of the
:58:17. > :58:23.gymnasts, there was world medal, European medal, and I thought, gosh,
:58:24. > :58:30.how many? We have got 27 world and European medals since 2007. That is
:58:31. > :58:41.hard to compute. Nile is making his debut here and he got an of medals
:58:42. > :58:47.at junior level. -- unheard-of number of medals. Stay with us. We
:58:48. > :58:56.are just about to switch channels. Day five has been exciting. Victory
:58:57. > :59:00.for Scotland in the lawn bowls, with another gold medal breaking their
:59:01. > :59:06.previous tally of six, and three short of the total Games record.
:59:07. > :59:17.Nick Matthew successfully defended his squash title after beating his
:59:18. > :59:20.fellow England rival Willstrop. Laura Massaro had to settle for
:59:21. > :59:29.silver in the women's final after losing to Malaysia's squash Queen
:59:30. > :59:35.and defending champion Nicol David. Jen Mackintosh has joined her mother
:59:36. > :59:39.surely as only one of three Scottish women to win four Commonwealth
:59:40. > :59:45.medals after taking bronze in the 50 metres rifle prone final, and that
:59:46. > :59:48.will be bragging rights for both mother and daughter today.
:59:49. > :59:52.Congratulations to them. We are hopping over to BBC Two now. I hope
:59:53. > :59:57.you will join us for much more from the Hydra and the gymnastics. In the
:59:58. > :00:01.meantime, from the rest of the team in Glasgow, catch you soon. Goodbye.
:00:02. > :00:04.We've got factory boys and butchers' apprentices and office clerks
:00:05. > :00:11.Don't stop moving! If you go back you'll die!
