:00:00. > :00:07.to take the lead. Richard Colman is the one they seem to want at the

:00:08. > :00:11.front. He is a dangerous athlete. He does have a devastating pick-up and

:00:12. > :00:14.sprint finish. I think they are trying to tire him out and make it

:00:15. > :00:28.more difficult for him to think about qualifying. I think Joss

:00:29. > :00:40.Cassidy has decided to step it up a bit.

:00:41. > :00:46.disks and Josh is probably watching to make sure he stays in control of

:00:47. > :00:53.the race and Richard Colman has come to the front. David Weir can win

:00:54. > :00:57.from anywhere. He won the Paris Diamond League, where he sat a at

:00:58. > :01:04.the back and stormed through. He was trying to find what pace he has. But

:01:05. > :01:09.he is in third at the moment behind Cassidy. A lot of chat was going on

:01:10. > :01:14.in that first lap about people wondering if others would take it

:01:15. > :01:27.on, or what the pace might be. Richard Colman is in front. He is

:01:28. > :01:35.the only T53 in the race, which involves s. David Weir is going out

:01:36. > :01:41.wide around the bend and Colman and Cassidy and David Weir looking to

:01:42. > :01:45.hit the front. He dips his head and gets those shoulders pumping and

:01:46. > :01:50.opens up a gap. Again perhaps sending out a message to the rest,

:01:51. > :01:57.saying, this is what I have and you will do well to catch me in the

:01:58. > :02:04.final. It is a good battle for the three automatic qualifying places.

:02:05. > :02:09.Nicholson is almost on the wheel of Richard Colman. David Weir will

:02:10. > :02:17.coast across the line in a quick time. It is very close between the

:02:18. > :02:24.Australians for the two automatic places. David Weir, well, he will be

:02:25. > :02:30.a very hard man to beat on Thursday. There was little doubt about that

:02:31. > :02:35.beforehand. But that has been confirmed. What a turn of speed? Yes

:02:36. > :02:40.a fantastic pick up. The time was quicker than I expected considering

:02:41. > :02:45.the first two laps were sedate. Josh Cassidy and Richard Colman had

:02:46. > :02:53.nothing to offer when Dave picked it up. You see his hand speed. To come

:02:54. > :02:58.into lane 3, he is having to push probably ten or 11 metres further,

:02:59. > :03:04.because the chair takes up almost the whole lane. You can see how high

:03:05. > :03:09.his elbows lift and he starts to relax a bit more. He is still work

:03:10. > :03:12.hard, but there is plenty more to come from David. I imagine he

:03:13. > :03:17.probably has a quick look at the screens as he comes off the bend

:03:18. > :03:22.into the straight and knows he is so far clear he can take it easy. I'm

:03:23. > :03:27.not sure I would have the confidence to not push through line like that.

:03:28. > :03:40.A brave man. But they were nowhere near him. Now actually Bryant

:03:41. > :03:46.slightly under par for the first couple of throws. Can he improve? He

:03:47. > :03:50.needs to. It might be a bit better. I was hoping he might do what he did

:03:51. > :03:59.in the long jump and come really good in the third round. He has had

:04:00. > :04:03.such a scruffy decathlon so far. His left foot comes away and he can't

:04:04. > :04:08.such a scruffy decathlon so far. His get the force into the discus. But

:04:09. > :04:17.saying that, it is scruffy, but it is his best throw and he is still in

:04:18. > :04:24.fifth with a strong javelin to come. We were talking about the rivalry

:04:25. > :04:30.with the Swiss athlete, David Weir bgs and of course the Swiss athlete

:04:31. > :04:38.is not here. I wonder who will challenge him on Thursday. David

:04:39. > :04:45.Weir is talking to Phil. How was that for an experience? You wapted a

:04:46. > :04:51.long time to wear the England vest. It was good. A bit of a long time

:04:52. > :04:55.waiting about for an athlete had a puncture or something. But it was a

:04:56. > :05:01.good atmosphere, a lot of English support, which was great to hear. We

:05:02. > :05:08.had heard one had to change chairs, is that something you have heard of?

:05:09. > :05:14.I'm not sure, but it was a bit long waiting. But things happen and we

:05:15. > :05:21.want all the racers to line up. So they asked us if we would wait and

:05:22. > :05:27.we said yes. That was an impressive performance and that turn of speed

:05:28. > :05:34.at the end? Yes it wasn't too bad. I would have liked to go quicker. But

:05:35. > :05:39.it was a good race. This is the one missing from your collection? Yes it

:05:40. > :05:43.is going to be tough. You never know. It will be an interesting

:05:44. > :05:54.final on Thursday. Well done. Thank you. Shades of Tour de France, where

:05:55. > :06:02.they change the race if somebody has a mechanical. Does it happen often?

:06:03. > :06:07.No, but the athletes can demand the race goes on and leave the one with

:06:08. > :06:11.the puncture on the side looivens. It -- sidelines. It has happened to

:06:12. > :06:17.me once and it is very hard to change a tyre and you're not allowed

:06:18. > :06:23.help. But that is a decent thing to do. The athlete that was left

:06:24. > :06:26.competes nationally and doesn't compete internationally and to

:06:27. > :06:31.travel all the way and not compete would be a shame. We talked about

:06:32. > :06:36.the cost of wheelchairs, you said ?5,000. As terms of barriers to

:06:37. > :06:44.entry, how difficult is it for the smaller nations? There are more

:06:45. > :06:47.standardised chairs that about ?500, but they're not custom made, the

:06:48. > :06:54.tyres aren't as good. The biggest barrier is the cost of the tyres,

:06:55. > :06:58.your looking at ?150 for some of the back tyres, they're thin and they

:06:59. > :07:06.don't last. So you have to train in good conditions and the back wheels

:07:07. > :07:13.are ?1,000 each. So it is not a cheap sport to get into at this

:07:14. > :07:18.level. For this next heat you have got Fearnely, who may be the guy who

:07:19. > :07:25.could push Dave Weir? Yes, they have been rivals for years. He is in the

:07:26. > :07:29.past sort of sat back and watched and waited and let Dave take

:07:30. > :07:37.control. I think maybe in the last year or so he hasn't done that so

:07:38. > :07:43.much. I think the gold will between them. But we have Will Smith a young

:07:44. > :07:49.athlete, 18, his first international games. He needs to get up there and

:07:50. > :08:00.get in with the pack and I am keeping my fingers crossed. It is a

:08:01. > :08:09.big deal for Will. Crammy, it is all yours. STEVE CRAM: There he is, just

:08:10. > :08:18.18 years of age, Wilf Smith, from the City of Norwich club. What a

:08:19. > :08:25.great moment for him. Multiple world junior champion. Here at the

:08:26. > :08:30.Commonwealth Games, trying to follow his hero, he say, David Weir is the

:08:31. > :08:35.man he wants to emulate in his career. And if he could do half of

:08:36. > :08:51.what he has done, he will have done well. DuPont sets off in the lead.

:08:52. > :08:59.Fearnely behind him and then Smith. Just three to go through and we have

:09:00. > :09:04.got the two Ghanaian athletes who competed in the Commonwealth Games

:09:05. > :09:08.T54 in Delhi. That race was won by Fearnely on that occasion. The Delhi

:09:09. > :09:13.games were held in October and it was a wee bit warmer than it is this

:09:14. > :09:18.morning in Hampden Park. But for the athletes, I don't think it is too

:09:19. > :09:27.bad. It is about 18 degrees and a bit of a breeze. A much quicker race

:09:28. > :09:31.and DuPont started off fast and hard and didn't want to get caught in

:09:32. > :09:36.trouble. They're starting the guys on the bend, that is difficult. A

:09:37. > :09:40.lot of races they move everyone across a few lanes and start opt

:09:41. > :09:46.straight. -- on the straight. Once you have had a few pushes, it can

:09:47. > :09:54.cause a problem and in other Championships it has caused crashes.

:09:55. > :09:58.The pace has slowed. One thing you can do, because it is very smooth f

:09:59. > :10:04.you have screens at either end, you can take a quick look to see where

:10:05. > :10:11.other people are in the pack. Will Smith is at the front, 18 years old,

:10:12. > :10:14.this is a great race for Will. He has to almost perform a personal

:10:15. > :10:26.best to make it to the final and he is not afraid to take it on. His

:10:27. > :10:39.stint at the front, Will Smith, lets DuPont, Fearnely move through and

:10:40. > :10:44.Obeng is a danger. Only the first three will go through. Given the

:10:45. > :10:51.times of the fastest losers from the first heat, I'm sure these four are

:10:52. > :11:00.going quickly enough to ensure their qualify xags. DuPont at the bell in

:11:01. > :11:03.the lead. Will Smith, has he been able to develop much speed and

:11:04. > :11:11.strength? It has been hard for Will. He has a fast PB from this season of

:11:12. > :11:15.303. But he hasn't had a chance to conSol Tait that -- consolidate

:11:16. > :11:23.that. It was in a pace race. Having to come out and work at the front

:11:24. > :11:31.will change it for him. Oh! Oh my goodness. That was Obeng going. He

:11:32. > :11:37.caught DuPont or Fearnely's wheel. We saw that in Beijing in the

:11:38. > :11:43.women's 5,000 metres. But Fearnely comes through to take the win.

:11:44. > :11:49.Fearnely, DuPont and then Smith who had to negotiate round Obeng. Well,

:11:50. > :11:58.the Ghanaian has got back into his chair and he is getting a rowing

:11:59. > :12:02.reception to -- rousing reception to come through the line. That time

:12:03. > :12:09.will still be enough for him to go through, despite that crash. Sorry

:12:10. > :12:14.that was his team mate, Frimpong. And that time will not be quick

:12:15. > :12:24.enough. A shake of the head. He was going well. I don't know if we can

:12:25. > :12:31.see what happened. This happens, Tanni. What is the process? Because

:12:32. > :12:39.going back to that crash in Beijing, they re-ran the whole race? Yes

:12:40. > :12:45.Beijing was tough on Shelley Woods, she went from silver to bronze. It

:12:46. > :12:53.looked like he clipped the kerb with the back wheat. Maybe -- wheel.

:12:54. > :12:58.Maybe his come pet say iter -- compensator was not set. It is about

:12:59. > :13:02.experience in racing. Knowing how close you can get to the back wheel

:13:03. > :13:09.of an athlete and in training we spent a lot of time with my husband

:13:10. > :13:14.drafting an inch off his back wheel at 25mph. But you have to do that

:13:15. > :13:19.repeatedly to safely do nit a race. But Fearnely is looking very strong

:13:20. > :13:33.and it will be a good final between him and David Weir. 18-year-old Will

:13:34. > :13:38.Smith. That was an anxious moment for him. He had to negotiate his way

:13:39. > :13:40.past Obeng. But he did that and waved too the crowd and we will see

:13:41. > :14:01.him in the final on Thursday night. JONATHAN EDWARDS: Tanni, you have

:14:02. > :14:08.got just over 24 hours to get ready for Jade in the women's final. If

:14:09. > :14:11.you were nervous, and you were, for Galfi casing -- qualification, you

:14:12. > :14:18.will be a night mare in the final? Yes, it probably good I don't come

:14:19. > :14:25.near here. I would say to her sprint fast. Did we learn anything from

:14:26. > :14:27.those heats? I don't think so. I think we learned that Dave still has

:14:28. > :14:29.got a turn of speed think we learned that Dave still has

:14:30. > :14:35.got a turn and he is looking strong. I don't think we have seen the best

:14:36. > :14:41.from Fearnely. The same in the women's race. It was very gentle and

:14:42. > :14:52.it will be a very different final. Will Smith was in that last heat and

:14:53. > :14:57.he is with Phil. It is tremendous that you got through to the final.

:14:58. > :15:04.You rose to the occasion. That was my main target. I am young, still

:15:05. > :15:11.getting experience. To qualify for the final is fantastic. You saw the

:15:12. > :15:17.crash, nobody likes to see that. I am really pleased. He had to

:15:18. > :15:24.negotiate the crash, but you did well. Yes, I had to get around.

:15:25. > :15:28.Nobody likes to see that. I have to keep up my head, stay out of

:15:29. > :15:34.trouble, and, fortunately, I did that. We know you look up to David

:15:35. > :15:42.Weir. How much inspiration does he give you? It is brilliant. We shared

:15:43. > :15:48.this shame -- shared the same coach, Jenny Archer. She is a fantastic

:15:49. > :15:53.lady. To train with him gives me invaluable experience. To be

:15:54. > :15:57.alongside someone like him in my first Commonwealth final is

:15:58. > :16:02.fantastic. Well done. Thank you very much.

:16:03. > :16:16.Well done, indeed. You can see there that Patrick Obeng, despite getting

:16:17. > :16:22.back in his chair, he will not be quick enough to go through as a

:16:23. > :16:31.fastest loser. So, William Smith will join David Weir in the final.

:16:32. > :16:34.We are going to say goodbye to Tanni Grey-Thompson. Thank you for your

:16:35. > :16:42.insights. Next up on track is the poster girl of these games, Eilidh

:16:43. > :16:46.Child. Let's go and quickly catch up with Michelle.

:16:47. > :16:54.It has been looking fantastic at Hampden Park, absolutely packed.

:16:55. > :16:59.First an update on the men's hockey. That match took place earlier. A

:17:00. > :17:09.late goal by Simon child give New Zealand fit tree over England. --

:17:10. > :17:13.the win over England. England are likely to meet Australia in the

:17:14. > :17:17.semifinals. On BBC Three, the return of mountain biking to the

:17:18. > :17:26.Commonwealth Games. The women's cross country event is underway. The

:17:27. > :17:33.men will be going for gold later this afternoon. On the red button,

:17:34. > :17:42.gymnastics. Two golds are on offer today in the team event. Men are

:17:43. > :17:49.going first. Online, plenty more options, including the Badminton and

:17:50. > :17:56.more lawn bowls. Back now to Jonathan in Hampden Park.

:17:57. > :18:04.Yesterday it was called for a Libby Clegg for Scotland and the gold. All

:18:05. > :18:16.the pressure in the world on her shoulders now for Eilidh Child.

:18:17. > :18:23.I have two sisters and one brother. We were all brought up to do

:18:24. > :18:32.different sports. My brother played that role, my mum slammed for

:18:33. > :18:35.Scotland, my dad did everything, football, athletics. We were all

:18:36. > :18:51.really into sport. I joined the cross country team at

:18:52. > :18:53.school. My sister did the same. She won the primary school

:18:54. > :19:03.cross-country. I went along and did that and is one it as well. I tried

:19:04. > :19:08.the hurdles. What is the secret to running good hurdles? It is all your

:19:09. > :19:15.stride pattern. You always want to attack it. If you have one blip it

:19:16. > :19:21.can affect the whole race. It is about having a very smooth the

:19:22. > :19:25.race. You got your first British title. How does it feel to be the

:19:26. > :19:30.favourite? Although I have always wanted to go in and win the race I

:19:31. > :19:35.have never had that kind of expectation. I knew if I ran a good

:19:36. > :19:38.race I should win it. Especially in the hurdles, things can happen. I

:19:39. > :19:44.wanted to put on a good solid performance. London was very

:19:45. > :19:49.overwhelming. I didn't feel like I could enjoy it. Rather than step

:19:50. > :19:58.away and look at it from a distance, I didn't really see it as

:19:59. > :20:03.mail home Olympics. I want to go to Glasgow and just enjoy the whole

:20:04. > :20:10.experience. I hope I will get good support. It will be my home crowd.

:20:11. > :20:13.They will cheer me on. You will feel special in comparison to the other

:20:14. > :20:20.athletes. I hope I will be more relaxed, knowing that I have good

:20:21. > :20:24.support. 2009 was when I made my first senior championship. I was a

:20:25. > :20:31.youngster, my first experience. In Delhi, I went there with my hopes of

:20:32. > :20:38.a medal. I was there to content and be somebody who should win a medal.

:20:39. > :20:46.Eilidh Childs is coming on strong! Eilidh Child is closing down. Eilidh

:20:47. > :20:50.Child in second. To be able to do the lap of honour with the Scottish

:20:51. > :20:55.flag, it was an amazing feeling. That kick-started things for me. Can

:20:56. > :20:59.you imagine doing that lap of honour in Glasgow? Have you allowed

:21:00. > :21:05.yourself to think? I have tried not to, to be honest. It would be the

:21:06. > :21:09.best moment in my life to be able to do that. Rather than think about

:21:10. > :21:14.that, I have been trying to focus on what I need to do to hopefully get

:21:15. > :21:19.to that stage. If that happens, it happens.

:21:20. > :21:28.Ellie Childs has already run at the stadium in the diamond lead. She ran

:21:29. > :21:31.really well. She would have felt the pressure there, even though it was

:21:32. > :21:39.only the diamond lead. Absolutely. She raised her game then. It was a

:21:40. > :21:44.flawless hurdles race. We saw as scrappy trials from her in

:21:45. > :21:50.Birmingham, where it just wasn't flowing. She had some difficulties

:21:51. > :21:54.at the top end of the hurdles. To come here in Glasgow and run really

:21:55. > :22:03.well, it elevated her and she got used to the atmosphere that she will

:22:04. > :22:07.expect here. It is a packed house. They want to see their girl going

:22:08. > :22:13.out and contending. There is this poster of her standing mocked up on

:22:14. > :22:22.top of Hampden Park, Scottish flag proud. That is a completely new

:22:23. > :22:30.thing for her. It is. It is also a huge boost. That pressure that is on

:22:31. > :22:34.you when you are the home favourites and there are so many hopes resting

:22:35. > :22:39.on you, when you are in shape it is a good thing. It can give you a huge

:22:40. > :22:44.boost. She will know that most of the stadium is behind her today. It

:22:45. > :22:55.will push on to a great performance. If you come in with a niggle, that

:22:56. > :23:03.pressure feels like a huge weight. Michael Jamieson was in shape. Yes,

:23:04. > :23:09.that is a good point. You are right. Eilidh Child is a different

:23:10. > :23:12.character. You just never know. He was the absolute favourite coming

:23:13. > :23:17.into the championships, feel a bit silver-medallist, and we saw the

:23:18. > :23:23.other affect. The pressure. It happens and you just can't call it.

:23:24. > :23:36.Kylie Spencer, the Jamaican, he is the favourite, is almost the second

:23:37. > :23:43.fastest this year. She went into Moscow in form and then got

:23:44. > :23:49.disqualified! Her leg came around the hurdle and got disqualified.

:23:50. > :23:55.Things can happen. On paper, Spencer is the faster athlete. Eilidh Child

:23:56. > :23:59.is out on the track. She has dreams about this moment, I would imagine.

:24:00. > :24:12.It has been at the forefront of her mind. She will have visualising,

:24:13. > :24:14.kept working on this. To then come out and race as well as she did in

:24:15. > :24:17.the diamond out and race as well as she did in

:24:18. > :24:21.lead would have been a huge boost. Coming in is not the outright

:24:22. > :24:28.favourite, but the peoples favourite behind Spencer, that can work on her

:24:29. > :24:41.advantage. She knows she is in shape. Royalty there, and I am not

:24:42. > :24:45.talking about Sebastian Coates! Prince William is alongside the

:24:46. > :24:52.chief executive of Glasgow 2014. There is Prince Harry, as well. I

:24:53. > :24:57.guess for Eilidh Child, the thing to focus on, Steve, is just a focus on

:24:58. > :25:01.her race. Absolutely, Jonathan. She ran such a

:25:02. > :25:10.brilliant raised here in the diamond lead a couple of weeks ago. On her

:25:11. > :25:14.behalf, she said I did go on top of the stadium for that victory you

:25:15. > :25:22.were talking about. He says, people don't believe me! She is getting a

:25:23. > :25:32.great reception. Images everywhere around the city of her. Huge she

:25:33. > :25:39.should be OK. Only the first for some of the athletes it is it is a

:25:40. > :26:15.pretty brittle qualification. Tracy was third in the Jamaican

:26:16. > :26:30.Championships. Ese Okoro, her best this year by 6.67. -- 50 6.67.

:26:31. > :26:36.So, the Commonwealth silver-medallist, can she go one

:26:37. > :26:38.better? She will be up against Kaliese Spencer in the final. She

:26:39. > :26:43.just needs to get through without any problems. The top two and the

:26:44. > :26:52.two fastest losers from these three heats.

:26:53. > :27:05.I am afraid that constitutes a false start. Lucas holds her head and

:27:06. > :27:12.knows what she has done. Remember in the do yesterday we saw the young

:27:13. > :27:31.Australian do such blatant false starts. Yes. She will be very upset.

:27:32. > :27:34.She is on her way home. Shona Richards won a silver medal in a

:27:35. > :27:39.brilliant performance in the world Junior Championships and beat the

:27:40. > :27:50.British record. Eilidh Child might have somebody

:27:51. > :27:54.else then to content within the British ranks. For now, she is

:27:55. > :28:01.representing Scotland, looking to get to the final.

:28:02. > :28:08.So, one athlete less for Eilidh Child to worry about. She has been

:28:09. > :28:17.working on her stride pattern all year. She started her season so

:28:18. > :28:22.well, then had won two bits of inconsistency. Today she is showing

:28:23. > :28:27.the of form that she showed at the Diamond league a couple of weeks

:28:28. > :28:41.ago. Eilidh Child is being roared on by this huge crowd. Ese Okoro will

:28:42. > :28:56.be trying to get involved. Eilidh Child, as expected, well clear.

:28:57. > :29:08.That is a solid run for Eilidh Child. It is always difficult, I

:29:09. > :29:15.think, 400 metres hurdles, there is not a lot you can do to take it

:29:16. > :29:19.easy, until the home straight. You don't want to risk not attacking the

:29:20. > :29:33.hurdles properly. It is not the sort of events where you can cruise in

:29:34. > :29:44.from 280 metres. I was watching her stride pattern the whole way. I was

:29:45. > :29:49.impressed. I think she stuttered into this final hurdle because she

:29:50. > :29:56.was relaxing. There was no stress at this stage. She could easily afford

:29:57. > :30:07.to just chopped down. -- chopped down. Hard out of the blocks. Even

:30:08. > :30:13.at the beginning of the race, you just want to get into the rhythm.

:30:14. > :30:18.She had a strategy of going to 15 for hurdle six and seven. Once you

:30:19. > :30:21.can achieve that, it did see a huge sense of confidence because you are

:30:22. > :30:28.saving your energy for the real deal, the back-end of race. She just

:30:29. > :30:33.made sure she had the 15 stride pattern. She changes down to 16

:30:34. > :30:36.here. She will go back to her left leg here. She will come into the

:30:37. > :30:42.home straight more comfortable on her left leg. There it is, giving us

:30:43. > :30:48.the sign she is hitting their stride pattern accurately. She is just

:30:49. > :30:54.going to do a little bit of a stutter into that barrier and cruise

:30:55. > :31:05.into the finish. I think she will be very pleased. It made pleasing

:31:06. > :31:10.viewing to you that, Eilidh, this crowd as well, they make pleasing

:31:11. > :31:16.listening. How much of a relief was that after the build up and the

:31:17. > :31:23.poster girl and all that went with it? I have been watching it and I

:31:24. > :31:29.have have been dying to get out and get that first round out of the way

:31:30. > :31:40.and get a feel for the atmosphere. It was a bit nerve racking. All the

:31:41. > :31:46.Scottish stoem teams have done well. Yes, everybody is in a good mood.

:31:47. > :31:50.That made pleasing viewing to you, because you can't take your foot off

:31:51. > :31:58.the gas in your event? No, you have got to get your stride pattern. I

:31:59. > :32:02.took my foot off the gas in the home straight and I worked harder doing

:32:03. > :32:06.that. You have to go for it and get the strides in and you can op ease

:32:07. > :32:12.off after the last hurdle. It is good I have a day off tomorrow. As

:32:13. > :32:17.for the xroud, how much more can they boost your performance? Yeah,

:32:18. > :32:22.definitely, the louder they are the better. More for that home straight

:32:23. > :32:29.when the helpings are going, it is great to have that boost. You have

:32:30. > :32:35.done them well, we wsh you well for the final. STEVE CRAM: I think the

:32:36. > :32:45.main emotion is relief. She is safely through. She is safely

:32:46. > :32:56.through. Lucas as we said disqualified for that false start.

:32:57. > :33:05.JONATHAN EDWARDS: The anthem for the games has been 500 Miles and Eilidh

:33:06. > :33:10.was speaking at 500mph! She has been in the athletes village and she is

:33:11. > :33:16.sounding more Scottish than normal. But really buzzing. Yes, and rightly

:33:17. > :33:21.so. She has worked so hard and it is coming together nicely. That was a

:33:22. > :33:26.great opening race. She looked easy and she is in the right mental

:33:27. > :33:32.state. What we have looked at with Eilidh in the recent times is her

:33:33. > :33:40.ability to start attacking these hurdles. Sometimes she is hesitant,

:33:41. > :33:48.but the Glasgow Diamond League we saw a new Eilidh. Everything seemed

:33:49. > :33:56.to be perfect and she looked good. Paula, she seemed to be embracing

:33:57. > :34:01.this? Yes, she has asked Laura about the atmosphere, but you want to get

:34:02. > :34:04.a feel for it yourself. Andrew Cotter, this one is yours.

:34:05. > :34:18.COMMENTATOR: We are ready for the second of three heats. Hayley McLean

:34:19. > :34:37.is 19 and the European junior champion last year. And this is the

:34:38. > :34:47.third quickest in the Commonwealth. Abubakar of Ghana, she is 17 years

:34:48. > :35:04.old. Montcalm won her second Canadian title this year. And

:35:05. > :35:18.Kwarula from Papua New Guinea. The athletes we didn't see. There is

:35:19. > :35:29.Christine McMann in lane 8. Just inside her is the other athlete who

:35:30. > :35:45.you would expect to go through. She is the South African champion. Two

:35:46. > :36:02.to go through automatically. Only the two fastest losers. Expect

:36:03. > :36:08.Russell in lane 4, the Jamaican and Theron, the South African, to come

:36:09. > :36:14.clear from the rest. A strong run also on the inside from Montcalm. At

:36:15. > :36:24.the moment, the Canadian champion. But she may be chasing a quickest

:36:25. > :36:29.loser time. But hanging on to Russell. McMann is -- McMahon is

:36:30. > :36:37.going well. But these three are Coombing away and Russell looking

:36:38. > :36:44.comfortable outside Theron. Those two go through automatically.

:36:45. > :36:53.Russell and Theron and Montcalm relying on their times. For Russell

:36:54. > :37:03.it is 56. 19. Not as quick as the run of Eilidh Child. The winner here

:37:04. > :37:09.is rul set. She is a multi-talented athlete. She has had a couple of

:37:10. > :37:14.heptathlons and Jessica Ennis-Hill is listening and you know, I would

:37:15. > :37:21.love to see you doing this event. But there is our winner of the

:37:22. > :37:25.second semi final. She is not as smooth as Eilidh. Eilidh's

:37:26. > :37:36.experience is telling. Especially when the pressure is on at the time

:37:37. > :37:40.final barriers. Landing over these barriers, you can be very heavy and

:37:41. > :37:56.you want to keep as smooth as you can all the way. You want to save

:37:57. > :38:01.energy. That is always key. The heptathlon with Theisen-Eaton. A

:38:02. > :38:08.huge favourite to take the title. This is our helping attempt. A bit

:38:09. > :38:20.of a stutter, but a good clearance. She has had to wait a full hour. She

:38:21. > :38:27.sat patiently. Maybe just used that attempt to warm herself in. Is in is

:38:28. > :38:34.Zelinka, the lead in the heptathlon overall.

:38:35. > :38:45.Oh, that is not so good. Zelinka, yeah, not quite sure what she is

:38:46. > :38:58.saying to herself there. But that is disappointing. She has got a best of

:38:59. > :39:03.1.79. So 1.68 way shy. Men's decathlon is coming to its climax.

:39:04. > :39:15.We are about two thirds of the way through after seven events of ten.

:39:16. > :39:23.Damian Warner way out in front. The two English are third and fourth.

:39:24. > :39:30.Ashley Bryant is strong in the javelin. And John Lane is strong in

:39:31. > :39:42.the pole vault. It may all come down to the final 1,500 metres. JONATHAN

:39:43. > :39:47.EDWARDS: No fun to run in, they hate that 15 hundred metres. No and pole

:39:48. > :39:55.vault is such a tricky event. Conditions are not warm. You request

:39:56. > :40:01.see the rain is starting to come down. That will play a big part and

:40:02. > :40:07.affects the better pole vaulters. All to go for. It is coming down

:40:08. > :40:10.heavily. It is miserable. It wouldn't have been a Glasgow

:40:11. > :40:17.Commonwealth Games without a wee bit of the wet stuff. Listen, it has

:40:18. > :40:24.been great so far in all the arenas. A bit of rain doesn't hurt. Paula,

:40:25. > :40:28.you are worried, in case I ask you about the decathlon. We have David

:40:29. > :40:33.Warner clear, but you have a opportunity for two English athletes

:40:34. > :40:39.that you wouldn't normally see to get among the medals. Yes and both

:40:40. > :40:45.will be aware of that going into the last vent and into the 1,500. If you

:40:46. > :40:49.look at that as a straight race, it is different to the way they have to

:40:50. > :40:54.look at it coming in, every half a second counts for points and that is

:40:55. > :41:00.important and something they will be aware of and it affects how they

:41:01. > :41:04.will race. But great to have two young guys fighting for medals in an

:41:05. > :41:11.vent which we have been so dominant over the years. We have had Dean

:41:12. > :41:16.Macey at the Olympics and World Championship, but it has been quiet

:41:17. > :41:21.for a few years. We would like to see a resurgence in that event. It

:41:22. > :41:25.is interesting are, because you say you have Dean and Daley and there

:41:26. > :41:32.hasn't been the legacy as there has been from the likes of you going

:41:33. > :41:38.back to others and that kind of heritage has continued? Yes I don't

:41:39. > :41:48.know why that is. We have got great coaches in Mike Holmes, and Tony who

:41:49. > :41:57.guided Jessica. But in the decathlon, I wonder if there is a

:41:58. > :42:04.sense of them being hesitant. And the other event is the javelin with

:42:05. > :42:09.Steve Blackley and Mick Hill and it has not continued. There is Kylie

:42:10. > :42:22.Spencer, the favourite for the gold medal, you would say s Steve Cram?

:42:23. > :42:28.STEVE CRAM: Yes she could become the most unpopular athlete in Glasgow,

:42:29. > :42:36.she is the one who stands between Eilidh Child and a gold. That is

:42:37. > :42:48.Bellille, who is having a great season. Lauren Wells. Just missed a

:42:49. > :42:56.medal four years ago in Delhi. The two time Nigerian champion,

:42:57. > :43:02.Ogoegbunam. And Spencer is in lane 1, with a draw that is not easy. She

:43:03. > :43:07.has had trail leg issues and you're in lane 1 as well. It shouldn't be a

:43:08. > :43:16.problem. These hurdles are not an issue in terms of height. So she

:43:17. > :43:19.needs to conSen trachlt Laura Wake is -- concentrate. Laura Wake is in

:43:20. > :43:34.lane 5 and the top two will go through. The third of the three

:43:35. > :43:41.heats here. At the moment, I'm just checking on fastest loser spots,

:43:42. > :43:50.around 56 and a half seconds would get you. Spencer unbeaten since the

:43:51. > :43:56.Doha Diamond League back in the start of May. Sips then she has been

:43:57. > :44:06.-- since then she has been dominant in the 400 m hurdles. Laura Wake

:44:07. > :44:11.going well. Bellille also started quickly. Spencer on the inside, the

:44:12. > :44:17.favourite to go through here. Just checking into that one. Looked as

:44:18. > :44:21.though she is not really attacking the hurdles. She might think she

:44:22. > :44:25.doesn't have to. But with Lauren Wells and she is going well and

:44:26. > :44:31.Spencer with some room to make up. She should be able to do that in the

:44:32. > :44:36.home straight. This looks more like her. She checks into that one. Looks

:44:37. > :44:41.as though she is trying to take this very comfortably and easily. Now,

:44:42. > :44:52.Spencer and Wells can just relax as they cross the line first and second

:44:53. > :44:56.and a 5. 46 run. I was thinking that first 200 and around the bend, what

:44:57. > :45:00.did you make of that? She is the world No 1. A good performance. But

:45:01. > :45:08.that is about the same time as Eilidh Child. But a very different

:45:09. > :45:13.performance. COLIN JACKSON: I think she was thinking about

:45:14. > :45:22.disqualification and just taking this race careful. Because her

:45:23. > :45:25.stride patterns were nowhere near normal. Her aggression was not the

:45:26. > :45:31.same as we have seen. I believe she was taking her time to make sure

:45:32. > :45:50.that she made it through to the final. These athletes, they are all

:45:51. > :45:55.experienced. Kaliese Spencer is three, even though she took her

:45:56. > :46:02.time! I think that we will find her running about two seconds faster

:46:03. > :46:08.than that in the final. I think there is a lot left in the locker

:46:09. > :46:22.for Kaliese Spencer. She wins it. Lauren Wells takes a good second

:46:23. > :46:29.spot. Ogoegbunam will get into the final as a fastest loser.

:46:30. > :46:36.I think the final is well set up for the big head-to-head between Jamaica

:46:37. > :46:41.and Scotland! A nice easy qualification for Kaliese Spencer.

:46:42. > :46:56.We will be back shortly for the men's 800 metres and David Rhodesia

:46:57. > :47:00.-- David Rudisha. At Cathkin Braes Country Park, just

:47:01. > :47:08.south of Glasgow, it is the mountain biking. Over on the red button you

:47:09. > :47:16.can see the gymnastics. Two golds on offer today in the team event.

:47:17. > :47:17.Online you can see table tennis and all the other live sport, including

:47:18. > :47:37.long balls and badminton. -- long that is it for me for today. Back to

:47:38. > :47:41.Hampden Park. If you are with us earlier on you

:47:42. > :47:57.would've seen Sebastian Coates in the crowd. I think he is probably

:47:58. > :48:02.here to see this man! David Rudisha, already the world

:48:03. > :48:10.champion, striding away to become the Olympic champion! Unbelievable!

:48:11. > :48:21.The greatest ever 800-metre race anyone has ever run. What a

:48:22. > :48:26.privilege to be here. That was my greatest moment in my

:48:27. > :48:41.career. I prepared for that were so many years. Usain Bolt was good,

:48:42. > :48:47.David Rudisha was majestic. You might dare to dream about getting

:48:48. > :48:53.over the line first, the sky was so sure he was going to win, let's go

:48:54. > :48:59.and win in a world record and be the first man under 1.41. It doesn't get

:49:00. > :49:26.any better than that. The only Championships... It'll be

:49:27. > :49:36.in Glasgow. This is quick! David Rudisha is back on top form. I have

:49:37. > :49:43.dedicated myself for all these years. It has been my main

:49:44. > :49:52.priority, work. I am looking forward to a good race I hope in the next

:49:53. > :49:59.few weeks I hope to be at that top level again.

:50:00. > :50:03.Thinking back to that, it gives you goose bumps. It was incredible. I

:50:04. > :50:09.have never seen anything quite like it. We talk about Usain Bolt and he

:50:10. > :50:14.is great, but to see someone run from gun to tape, an electrifying

:50:15. > :50:26.first lap, it had everyone on their feet. It was such a stunning race.

:50:27. > :50:31.You know how much the medal meant to him, his country, after all the

:50:32. > :50:41.disappointments. Everyone who had been watching him for years, he had

:50:42. > :50:44.not quite delivered. Fantastic. People do not break world records

:50:45. > :50:51.like that in those kind of events. That is the point. When something

:50:52. > :50:58.like the 800 metres, it is different for Usain Bolt, you are racing in

:50:59. > :51:03.your only come in the 800 metres you are just thinking about winning and

:51:04. > :51:08.what you need to do tactically. To go out with a plan to attack with no

:51:09. > :51:14.pacemaker from the gun, that is a very brave, competent team to do. It

:51:15. > :51:20.came off for him. I think that is what was so amazing. For him it has

:51:21. > :51:28.been difficult since then with his injury. He has missed a lot of time.

:51:29. > :51:35.In February he was not sure if he was going to be here, even though he

:51:36. > :51:49.really wanted to be here. He has missed a lot of training. Nigel Amos

:51:50. > :51:58.was second behind him in London. Yes, and beat him quite convincingly

:51:59. > :52:04.recently. It is looking to be a great match today. Let's handover to

:52:05. > :52:12.the man who holds the Commonwealth Games record, back in 1986. World

:52:13. > :52:20.records survive, Steve Cram? I don't think it has got a lot of

:52:21. > :52:24.chants of this guy fancies it! Qualification here is

:52:25. > :52:28.straightforward. Only 27 athletes. There are three rounds. I think

:52:29. > :52:34.David Rudisha will be happy about that. I was chatting to his camp the

:52:35. > :52:35.other night, and they were saying the more he races the better he will

:52:36. > :53:07.get this year. David Rudisha will probably be

:53:08. > :53:12.concentrating on Nigel Amos. It is a great chance for Learmonth from

:53:13. > :53:16.Scotland to qualify, though he probably won't enjoy running beside

:53:17. > :53:41.David Rudisha! Bagina from Rwanda. I think the

:53:42. > :53:53.danger in this heat is Brandon M Rider. He can run under 47 seconds

:53:54. > :53:58.in the 400 metres. He is the Canadian champion. I think he will

:53:59. > :54:06.give the two British athletes something to think about. So, the

:54:07. > :54:09.first three to go through. As I said, just 27 athletes in this

:54:10. > :54:19.round. More people will go through them all not out. -- knocked out.

:54:20. > :54:31.David Rudisha talks about the fact that he loves to run from the front.

:54:32. > :54:37.As always, he will choose where he runs. In 2009 he didn't qualify for

:54:38. > :54:53.the championships running from behind. He realised then that he

:54:54. > :54:58.performs better from the lead. He is cruising today, looking majestic. He

:54:59. > :55:05.looks much better when he is going quicker. That is pretty quick for

:55:06. > :55:13.the first round. When you get athletes of this calibre, you don't

:55:14. > :55:18.often see them running in Glasgow, but when they do come here, they

:55:19. > :55:28.really get a response. A great crowd appreciating this man, David

:55:29. > :55:29.Rudisha. David Rudisha has slowed it down. He is looking comfortable on

:55:30. > :55:48.the curve. The Canadian not able to go with

:55:49. > :55:57.it. David Rudisha will be very comfortable. Learmonth finishing

:55:58. > :56:14.quickly. Cunningham and Rimmer will join David Rudisha. A solid run by

:56:15. > :56:21.Learmonth, he should be OK. Bagina went hard and he pushed the first

:56:22. > :56:35.lap quite quickly. David Rudisha has so much in the tank. David Rudisha

:56:36. > :56:38.is so comfortable running at the front. When you establish that that

:56:39. > :56:42.is the way you're going to run, you front. When you establish that that

:56:43. > :56:50.is the way can do take everything. He wants to run from the front. He

:56:51. > :57:00.was cruising down the back straight. You just switched off. 28 seconds

:57:01. > :57:09.for the last 200 metres. But, there he goes! David Rudisha in full flow.

:57:10. > :57:15.Looking strong, powerful. Another acceleration just on the bend.

:57:16. > :57:28.Rimmer running well in second place. Learmonth getting a great cheer from

:57:29. > :57:39.the crowd. Michael Rimmer will be happy in second place. David

:57:40. > :57:46.Rudisha, looking at the television! We will see him again in the

:57:47. > :57:47.semifinal. It will be a good final, great final. It could be the final

:57:48. > :58:02.of the games. So, so comfortable for David

:58:03. > :58:09.Rudisha. We need to talk about Bagina of Rwanda. I think he wanted

:58:10. > :58:12.to get himself on television excavation and think he wanted the

:58:13. > :58:20.chance just to run alongside David Rudisha. He was running way too

:58:21. > :58:27.fast, ruined his own race, but he got the chance to do that. He went

:58:28. > :58:33.backwards and everybody had to go round him. You expect that. David

:58:34. > :58:38.Rudisha almost did a double-take! You didn't expect them to be up

:58:39. > :58:44.there! You are thinking ahead that you will end up having to go round

:58:45. > :58:50.him. Learmonth had a check as he went into the home straight. A good

:58:51. > :58:58.performance by Michael Rimmer, making it through to the semifinals.

:58:59. > :59:02.Greg Rutherford qualified in the long jump. Now, the news.
