:00:50. > :00:52.medal. There is your Commonwealth champion
:00:53. > :01:07.by a country mile! Oh, well done!
:01:08. > :01:15.Max Whitlock has just landed on a gold medal.
:01:16. > :01:16.They are, with champions. That is exactly what England
:01:17. > :01:20.ordered! Three Olympic champions won
:01:21. > :01:27.Commonwealth gold at Hampden Park last night, and we'll be reflecting
:01:28. > :01:30.on what a great night it was with But another 25 gold medals will be
:01:31. > :01:35.won here on day eight of the Games, and you'll be able to see some
:01:36. > :01:38.of them right here We'll be limbering up this morning
:01:39. > :01:44.with some live table tennis, with Liam Pitchford and Tin-Tin Ho in the
:01:45. > :01:49.quarterfinals of the mixed doubles. The women's time trial will be
:01:50. > :01:52.the last competition for England's Emma Pooley
:01:53. > :01:54.before she retires from cycling. Jo Rowsell will also be amongst
:01:55. > :01:59.the favourites. Then it's the men, and the streets
:02:00. > :02:04.of Glasgow will be packed to see whether Scotland's David Millar
:02:05. > :02:06.can repeat his Delhi delight. Also riding today will be some
:02:07. > :02:09.of Rwanda's cyclists and we'll have In just over ten minutes,
:02:10. > :02:28.we'll be live at the lawn bowls, as there's a Scotland and England
:02:29. > :02:31.clash in the bronze medal match We'll be keeping an eye
:02:32. > :02:34.on that all morning. Then, at 9.20, we'll look ahead to
:02:35. > :02:38.both the cycling time trials, with Chris Boardman who'll be part
:02:39. > :02:40.of our commentary team. At 9.30, we're off to the live table
:02:41. > :02:44.tennis, as we reach the later stages of the competition over
:02:45. > :02:47.at the Scotstoun Sports Campus. At 9.55, we'll have the story
:02:48. > :02:51.of those Rwandan cyclists, And then we join the women's
:02:52. > :02:56.time trial, just after 10am. The men's event will be live
:02:57. > :03:00.at 12.30pm. A packed few hours ahead, and
:03:01. > :03:02.there's already live sport underway. On BBC Three, you can watch
:03:03. > :03:05.the live hockey match. It's the final pool match
:03:06. > :03:07.between England and Canada. England's men all but assured
:03:08. > :03:14.of a place in the semi-finals. And then, on the Red Button,
:03:15. > :03:20.you can currently watch that bronze of that live here on BBC One during
:03:21. > :03:29.the course of the morning, but you And don't forget the BBC Sport
:03:30. > :03:32.website, where you can watch every single sport live
:03:33. > :03:34.as it happens throughout the day, And all that works
:03:35. > :03:46.on your mobile device as well. Let's start this morning though
:03:47. > :03:49.with the man who's got the biggest In a moment, we'll be talking to
:03:50. > :03:55.Olympic and now Commonwealth But first, here's a reminder
:03:56. > :04:10.of how he won that gold. Round three of this long jump
:04:11. > :04:14.final, and Greg Rutherford has been studied at the back of this runway,
:04:15. > :04:22.desperate, almost saying, get out of the way, I want to run, he is so
:04:23. > :04:26.keen. Look at that! He knew he could take that lead back. Slightly
:04:27. > :04:33.jumping into what looks like a head wind, looking at that white flag,
:04:34. > :04:43.denoting a legal jump. 8.20! That has wrestled the lead
:04:44. > :04:48.back from the South African, two centimetres behind the Games record.
:04:49. > :04:55.And Greg Rutherford of England, at the end, at the start rather of the
:04:56. > :05:00.round, is in the lead nearing the halfway stage. Very committed. He
:05:01. > :05:07.hit that board. He looked so confident. He absolutely was bang on
:05:08. > :05:14.where he wanted to be. Excellent acceleration off the board.
:05:15. > :05:29.Representing England, Greg Rutherford!
:05:30. > :05:36.That was last night and he is here this morning.
:05:37. > :05:43.How did that feel? Fantastic, it is what you train for,
:05:44. > :05:46.to come away with a Championship title and a gold medal is very
:05:47. > :05:51.special. You had a job in the first round and
:05:52. > :05:58.you knew you had to do better in the second round -- a jump.
:05:59. > :06:03.I opened with 8.12 which is exactly what you want to do in any major
:06:04. > :06:13.championships, a decent jump in the first round. Eight people going into
:06:14. > :06:23.the final three rounds. I want a decent job -- jump. I knew the guys
:06:24. > :06:24.at there had a very good level to compete. The South African came
:06:25. > :06:42.straight back out. How did you psych yourself up? The
:06:43. > :06:48.big occasion gives you the adrenaline. We have worked very hard
:06:49. > :06:53.this year to make sure everything is going well. We had an injury scare a
:06:54. > :06:57.couple of weeks ago and I needed injections into my spine.
:06:58. > :07:05.Was that to do with your training? Yes, you wind yourself -- your body
:07:06. > :07:13.up a lot and sometimes your body cannot cope with it. For me, I had a
:07:14. > :07:19.nerve issue. I had spine injections to clear that.
:07:20. > :07:25.You haven't had the easiest time since the Olympics in all sorts of
:07:26. > :07:33.ways. People were not sure whether you would make it.
:07:34. > :07:42.Absolutely. Last year, I ruptured a hamstring. That is a bad injury. It
:07:43. > :07:48.has ended careers at times. In the Diamond League, I felt it go and I
:07:49. > :07:52.felt my career was over. The end of an awful year. My coach had to go
:07:53. > :07:59.back to America, my physiotherapist holding me together in that way, he
:08:00. > :08:03.had to go back to Canada. You lost your support team at the
:08:04. > :08:10.moment when you were gearing up for a major championships.
:08:11. > :08:15.Last year was a search to find the new perfect team again. I didn't
:08:16. > :08:23.find it. I picked up a major injury and I had to reassess. I was
:08:24. > :08:26.fortunate, a group, a coach working from north London, Jonas had worked
:08:27. > :08:34.under my old coach for four years and had picked up a lot. He is
:08:35. > :08:40.young, nine months older than me. Before that, did you think, I had a
:08:41. > :08:44.fantastic time at London, a gold medal, maybe that is it?
:08:45. > :08:50.It wasn't a matter thinking I had done well and to retire, but my body
:08:51. > :08:57.wasn't holding out. Previously to London, I had made the final act and
:08:58. > :09:02.Olympics, won a Commonwealth silver medal. My career had gone well.
:09:03. > :09:11.Ultimately, my body was letting me down. That is hard to take. Last
:09:12. > :09:16.year, it got to the point where I thought this is probably it. And it
:09:17. > :09:23.would have ended on a low note. But your body did not let you down
:09:24. > :09:27.last night at Hampden Park. What a moment for English athletics. You
:09:28. > :09:33.worked the crowd afterwards, as you should. What was it like to feel
:09:34. > :09:41.that support? It was brilliant. Coming here, I fully expected a
:09:42. > :09:48.great card -- crowd. We normally compete as Team GB. So I thought
:09:49. > :09:55.there would be no difference here. It was a huge help. Everyone made it
:09:56. > :10:02.feel very special. It was like a mini Olympics. With their help, it
:10:03. > :10:09.helped me. 8.20 is by no means a special distance. But, for me, at
:10:10. > :10:15.this championships, I came here to win. In two and a half weeks I am
:10:16. > :10:19.off to the European Championships. There is no letup, and the World
:10:20. > :10:23.Championships, and looking ahead to Rio.
:10:24. > :10:31.I will be looking to retain my title. With everything staying as it
:10:32. > :10:35.is with me fit and healthy. Not many people have managed it in their
:10:36. > :10:39.careers. I go to the World Championships next year. I would
:10:40. > :10:43.like to get the full set of medals, again, not many people have done
:10:44. > :10:48.that. Something else not many people have
:10:49. > :10:54.done, that is to go on to a winter Olympics sport.
:10:55. > :11:00.I am fascinated by the skeleton. Now, whether I will be good at it I
:11:01. > :11:05.have no idea. Which one? Skeleton bob is
:11:06. > :11:09.have no idea. Which one? Skeleton individual sport, to push me. I will
:11:10. > :11:15.try hopefully at the end of this year to see if I am any good. The
:11:16. > :11:23.correlation of training and speed, power, lends itself quite well.
:11:24. > :11:27.Have you had a go at this before? Just speaking to people involved in
:11:28. > :11:33.the sport. They said if you years ago I should give it a go. I love
:11:34. > :11:38.the winter sports. Fascinated by them. There is something about
:11:39. > :11:44.throwing myself headfirst down an icy track!
:11:45. > :11:51.That would terrify many people. More immediately, big moments in
:11:52. > :11:56.your personal life, you are about to come -- become a father.
:11:57. > :12:03.It has given me another reason to perform at a high level. In a couple
:12:04. > :12:07.of months, the first child will be here. And I will have
:12:08. > :12:11.responsibilities in that way. It fills me with pride already and the
:12:12. > :12:15.baby isn't even here yet. I can't wait.
:12:16. > :12:23.baby isn't even here yet. I can't Good luck on all fronts. And
:12:24. > :12:37.There provided plenty of drama here
:12:38. > :12:46.There men's and women's singles, doubles,
:12:47. > :12:55.triples, and four Tour, and two para sports.
:12:56. > :13:04.A-level outdoor playing surface is needed. The first bowler rolls the
:13:05. > :13:10.jack to the other end at the target. When it comes to rest, it is
:13:11. > :13:19.moved across. A player or team scores a point for each bowls Chu
:13:20. > :13:24.bull close to the jack. The winner of the singles is the first person
:13:25. > :13:27.to 21. In the team format, the winner is the one with the most
:13:28. > :13:31.after a set number of ends. The lawns where
:13:32. > :13:33.the Glasgow 2014 competition is taking place are in the grounds
:13:34. > :13:36.of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and A picturesque setting that we have
:13:37. > :13:41.been watching for the last few days. Rishi Persad loves his bowls,
:13:42. > :13:45.and is there for us again today. Before we see the action, Rishi,
:13:46. > :14:04.just explain how this para-sport Just to let you know it is a bit
:14:05. > :14:11.drizzly at the Kelvin normal is said. This is the triples. You have
:14:12. > :14:18.to one player who is category B six disability, a player who can play
:14:19. > :14:22.standing, kneeling or sitting, and any confirmation of disabilities for
:14:23. > :14:31.the remainder of the team. A B seven there has minor balance problems.
:14:32. > :14:39.The England team do have three players, one player Bob Love is 60,
:14:40. > :14:44.he was born without arms and plays with his feet, and extraordinary
:14:45. > :14:54.amount of skill involved. They are up against a strong Scotland side
:14:55. > :15:01.comprising Billy Allen, Michael Simpson and Billy Wallace. They will
:15:02. > :15:10.fancy their chances. They are playing in the shadow of the museum
:15:11. > :16:10.here. After three ends, it was 3-2. This is the latest score.
:16:11. > :16:24.A bit pushy. England line one. A good line. Just needs to reach. It
:16:25. > :16:45.is dropping on the short side. David Fisher, England's second. Now,
:16:46. > :17:28.Michael Simson, the left-hander. Just needed another foot or two. It
:17:29. > :18:20.would have drifted at the end of its travel.
:18:21. > :18:27.in to much more. We have seen players over correcting. The rain is
:18:28. > :18:30.coming down now a more persistent. It will be a bit uncomfortable for
:18:31. > :18:41.the spectators and players. It just needed the extra weight to
:18:42. > :19:34.carry it. This is better, a perfect delivery.
:19:35. > :19:47.Towards the bowl at the back. A good bowl from Kevin. Now, we are in a
:19:48. > :19:55.bit of bother with the rain, it is starting to come down at a fair old
:19:56. > :20:11.pace. He eased it out enough. Another really good delivery.
:20:12. > :20:24.They will be down with the measure to see is going on. More quality
:20:25. > :20:38.stuff. I am not sure who is measuring, but
:20:39. > :20:49.I am pretty certain it is a lady umpire.
:20:50. > :21:21.bring you more of that later. If you want to carry on watching life, you
:21:22. > :21:25.can press your red button. On some digital platforms, you will get an
:21:26. > :21:30.even wider choice if you press the red button, then the blue button.
:21:31. > :21:35.Here on BBC One, we are going to have live coverage of the cycling
:21:36. > :21:44.later. Both the women and men's time trials will take place on the
:21:45. > :21:45.streets of Glasgow. In the men's event, it will be David Millar who
:21:46. > :22:01.can expect the biggest cheer. If you look at your back story,
:22:02. > :22:07.where you have come from, the time you have had out, you'll come back,
:22:08. > :22:14.there is something interesting in the way Scotland welcome you back.
:22:15. > :22:18.They always say you find your true friends in adversity. That was the
:22:19. > :22:23.case with Scotland, they supported me. During my band, I spent a lot of
:22:24. > :22:31.time in Edinburgh and Scotland, and I realised I felt like I was coming
:22:32. > :22:36.home. It was the one place where I felt at home, and people were so
:22:37. > :22:45.kind to me. It is my homeland, I feel proud to be part of this team.
:22:46. > :22:50.David Millar is the Commonwealth Games champion, and gold medal
:22:51. > :22:52.winner, for the first time ever to win a gold medal on the road in the
:22:53. > :23:03.history of the Commonwealth Games. That victory in Delhi, what did it
:23:04. > :23:09.mean to you? It was uprising hammered it meant, I had not
:23:10. > :23:12.expected it to be so important. I got second in the World
:23:13. > :23:19.Championships, and then in Delhi, it felt a lot different and a lot more
:23:20. > :23:26.honest and real. It felt more sincere. It was the first time I had
:23:27. > :23:33.ever raced in a Scotland jersey, I had not expected the effect it would
:23:34. > :23:37.have on me. To win, it was all very unexpected. The time trial is
:23:38. > :23:43.different from the deli time trial, what the gimmick of the course and
:23:44. > :23:50.the challenge from Australia and England? In Delhi, it was one of the
:23:51. > :23:54.hardest time trials I have ever done. Here, we do not have a
:23:55. > :24:02.straight line. It suits me quite well. It is quite varied, you cannot
:24:03. > :24:07.just put your head down and look at the numbers on your machine. It is
:24:08. > :24:15.going to be so explosive and diverse. It will make for a good
:24:16. > :24:20.race. You are retiring at the end of the year, that brings different
:24:21. > :24:25.emotions as well? I do not know how much difference it makes, because I
:24:26. > :24:30.am performance driven, I have trained really hard, I am trying to
:24:31. > :24:36.disengage from everything else, especially at what happened at the
:24:37. > :24:43.Tour de France. It has made me more focused on doing this for the right
:24:44. > :24:48.reasons, to be at my best. What will it be like, riding around the roads
:24:49. > :24:53.of Glasgow? I saw it in the national championships, I have never had such
:24:54. > :24:59.support. My whole family is here. It will be one of my final races, in
:25:00. > :25:10.front of a Glaswegian crowd. Some of my earliest memories are of Glasgow.
:25:11. > :25:15.It is quite a poetic full circle. He will be the very last man off in
:25:16. > :25:20.the men's time trial, that takes place at 12:30pm. Let's go to
:25:21. > :25:25.Glasgow Green, which is where the trials will start from. The weather
:25:26. > :25:31.is looking pretty ominous, which does not look ideal to me, but the
:25:32. > :25:35.cyclists are made of sterner stuff. Good morning, it is very wet. Ten
:25:36. > :25:40.minutes ago, it was looking beautiful. Chris Boardman said the
:25:41. > :25:45.weather would avoid Glasgow, but it has not! I was just winding you up!
:25:46. > :25:50.That is why we only have one umbrella! It is incredible, how the
:25:51. > :25:57.weather has changed in the last 20 minutes. We walked down in T-shirts,
:25:58. > :26:04.now it is pouring down. What kind of challenge is the course? It is quite
:26:05. > :26:08.technical, hardly any straight line, no flat, no real climes, but it is
:26:09. > :26:15.just up and down, breaking up the rhythm. The service is poor in
:26:16. > :26:24.places, so big tyres are needed. It is a rhodamine's course, especially
:26:25. > :26:29.it is raining. Now the pavement is lubricated, it is like an ice rink,
:26:30. > :26:33.so people will have to be cautious. In terms of the different riders,
:26:34. > :26:40.David Millar, the defending champion, how will this suit him? It
:26:41. > :26:45.is great for him, he has been out of competition for quite a few weeks,
:26:46. > :26:49.so we do not know what his form is like, but he is highly motivated. He
:26:50. > :26:54.has been working hard for the last three weeks, this is his final year
:26:55. > :27:00.of competition, he will be anxious to win. He was disappointed to not
:27:01. > :27:06.make the team for the Tour de France. Alex Dowsett was the same,
:27:07. > :27:11.people have been talking about him as a potential champion. He has been
:27:12. > :27:18.out of competition for some weeks, we have no gauge on his form, in --
:27:19. > :27:24.he is a strong rider, perhaps it is a bit of a technical course for him,
:27:25. > :27:29.and breaking up the rhythm, so many hills all the time, I am not sure it
:27:30. > :27:35.is ideal for him. Geraint Thomas has been in the Tour de France. How will
:27:36. > :27:40.he have recovered? I am hearing he is still pretty tired. The Tour de
:27:41. > :27:44.France is the best training camp you can ever go on, if you can have
:27:45. > :27:49.enough time to get over it. They will only have had three days to get
:27:50. > :27:54.over it. It will mostly depend on his motivation, but he was the
:27:55. > :27:59.favourite for me. He will have more focus on the road race on Sunday.
:28:00. > :28:07.Let's turn to the women, one cyclist who has talked about retirement from
:28:08. > :28:11.cycling, Emma Pooley. For her, she is the favourite. The national
:28:12. > :28:17.champion, this type of course suits her perfectly, they could not have
:28:18. > :28:21.made a better circuit for her. I heard a report that she is extremely
:28:22. > :28:26.nervous, and the report of her retirement has put added Russia on
:28:27. > :28:31.her, but she knows how to deal with pressure. Join arousal looked so
:28:32. > :28:43.good on the track -- Joanna arousal. I am guessing the weather
:28:44. > :28:51.will not suit her. I do not think it is ideal, weather-wise. It is hard
:28:52. > :28:57.to switch between the track... She is very powerful, but going from
:28:58. > :29:01.three and a half minutes to at least 40 minutes will be a big ask.
:29:02. > :29:07.Another Scottish hope, David Millar in the men's, but Katie Archibald in
:29:08. > :29:14.the women's, who rode bravely on the track. A lot of people thinking she
:29:15. > :29:19.has a great chance. She should have on paper, this could be hurt chance
:29:20. > :29:25.to dethrone some of the established riders that RPR. I would like to see
:29:26. > :29:31.that. But she is facing the same problem, a few days of the track.
:29:32. > :29:37.But this circuit might suit her. And Eleanor Barker. She is an unknown, I
:29:38. > :29:45.do not know how she will fare, but she should be in the top five. The
:29:46. > :29:50.women's race starts at 10am, the men's at 12:30pm. They need to bring
:29:51. > :29:56.their own brothers! -- there own brothers!
:29:57. > :30:00.We will be back with them just after 10am this morning. In the meantime,
:30:01. > :30:11.we are heading to see a fourth-round match in the next doubles in the
:30:12. > :30:14.table tennis, the English pair in action shortly. He is a guide to the
:30:15. > :30:17.sport where quick reflexes are everything.
:30:18. > :30:20.Table tennis is a quick and skilful sport requiring a
:30:21. > :30:26.Bats are made of wood covered by a piece of rubber,
:30:27. > :30:28.giving players different controls of speed and spin.
:30:29. > :30:34.Each rally begins with a serve which must be hit from behind
:30:35. > :30:39.Before crossing the net, the ball must bounce on the server's side.
:30:40. > :30:44.In singles, the serve can be directed anywhere on the table but

:30:54. > :30:56.Each of the players must players must then strike the ball in return.
:30:57. > :30:59.Play continues in seconds throughout the rally, and those who hit out
:31:00. > :31:03.After every two points, service is changed.
:31:04. > :31:06.Matches are the best of five sets, the first player to 11 points
:31:07. > :31:09.There are seven events in Glasgow, men's and women's singles
:31:10. > :31:11.and doubles, mixed doubles and a separate team
:31:12. > :31:33.This is the scene live, they are just finishing their warm up. There

:31:47. > :31:53.Confirming this is a fourth-round mixed doubles. They are playing for
:31:54. > :31:56.a place in the quarterfinals. Pitchford and Hoe playing for
:31:57. > :32:22.England. Let us look at the New Zealanders.
:32:23. > :32:24.On the left, Liu is only 21. He only became eligible for the national
:32:25. > :32:47.team at the start of this year. They have already been playing in
:32:48. > :32:58.this condition, in the last round, they beat the Indian doubles team.
:32:59. > :33:06.Taking out two decent Indian players. As far as the English
:33:07. > :33:11.pairing is concerned, Pitchford, the world number 59. He started playing
:33:12. > :33:16.table tennis because it was a rainy day and he wanted to have something
:33:17. > :33:21.to do with his friends. That proved a wise decision. He has won two
:33:22. > :33:27.medals at the Commonwealth Games. Tin-Tin Ho is just 15. They have had
:33:28. > :33:43.to come through two matches to get to this stage.
:33:44. > :34:00.And the man in the chair for this one.
:34:01. > :34:13.So, stand-by for action. The best of five games, Pitchford start first.
:34:14. > :34:22.-- to start first. A good start from the English pair.
:34:23. > :34:32.That is why he is so highly ranked in the world. A great backhand from
:34:33. > :35:10.the English number one. They have too served
:35:11. > :35:19.quarter in doubles. They have too served
:35:20. > :35:37.play alternately. Another backhand lands perfectly for Pitchford.
:35:38. > :35:51.Liam Pitchford was born professionally now in Germany.
:35:52. > :36:30.Great play from Li, spotted Pitchford going one way.
:36:31. > :37:13.Pitchford, that was a wake-up call for the Kiwis.
:37:14. > :37:19.The English pair, in control here. Alan Cooke, the English coach in
:37:20. > :37:43.charge of these two. They are two points away from
:37:44. > :37:57.securing a lead. Not too much experience as a
:37:58. > :38:16.pairing, Pitchford and Hoe. -- Ho. Five game points for the English
:38:17. > :38:30.pair. You don't have to hit it hard when
:38:31. > :38:37.you can place it as well as that! Liu expecting it on the forehand and
:38:38. > :38:43.it went down the line. By the time he readjusted, it was too late, he
:38:44. > :38:44.dropped his bat, he was that confused. Excellent from Pitchford
:38:45. > :39:59.and Tin-Tin Ho. serve for New Zealand. It will be
:40:00. > :40:19.Li. She got Tin-Tin Ho with a short
:40:20. > :40:42.serve. It wasn't the worst return but this
:40:43. > :40:56.was a bullet. He has been firing rubber bullets all morning from that
:40:57. > :41:22.Matt -- bat. That was a good riposte from Liu.
:41:23. > :41:28.is so dangerous. He just caught the top of the net and it went long.
:41:29. > :42:05.Players are entitled to towel down every six points.
:42:06. > :42:19.Just a slight edge here for Pitchford and Ho.
:42:20. > :42:43.There was real venom in that shot. Both of the New Zealanders are
:42:44. > :42:57.highly ranked, so this was never going to be a cakewalk.
:42:58. > :43:09.She has got him with that serve a couple of times, Tin-Tin Ho.
:43:10. > :43:31.Her father, table tennis mad, calling her TT.
:43:32. > :43:39.Really good teamwork from the English pair. Add a critical point
:43:40. > :43:47.in this game. Getting the New Zealanders moving around. F34 Shot
:43:48. > :44:15.Put walk -- footwork is so important in doubles.
:44:16. > :44:39.A hint of recovery from the Kiwis, back on level terms.
:44:40. > :44:50.That was a shot, space to play it but she put it wide. And the
:44:51. > :45:35.recovery shows every sign of growing here for New Zealand.
:45:36. > :45:44.that! It was brilliant that he gave himself a chance of returning it.
:45:45. > :45:57.They have got the second game, and it is a 2-0 lead for England. A
:45:58. > :46:24.place in the quarterfinal beckons. They are such fine margins. The
:46:25. > :46:29.Kiwis had effectively given themselves the point.
:46:30. > :46:39.The ball was almost behind him. Incredible.
:46:40. > :46:44.The cross of St George flying proudly here with this English pair
:46:45. > :46:54.one game away from a place in the last eight. She says her ambition is

:46:57. > :47:05.Games, and she still has a chance. to win a medal at these Commonwealth
:47:06. > :47:12.Still in the women's doubles as well. They are playing this
:47:13. > :47:16.afternoon. She was knocked out of the singles yesterday, but no
:47:17. > :47:18.disgrace in that, her opponent was ranked 10th in the world, and she
:47:19. > :47:54.got a game off her. The Kiwi has not found her range
:47:55. > :47:56.yet. They cannot let the English pair get away, or else it will be
:47:57. > :48:11.curtains. A swing and a miss. She is into the third round of the
:48:12. > :48:20.women's singles, she beat the Malaysian yesterday, 4-0. What a
:48:21. > :48:26.great start to this third game for the English pair. New Zealand have
:48:27. > :48:27.taken a time-out, it is not surprising, there is no
:48:28. > :49:18.understanding between them. One of the rules of doubles, hit the
:49:19. > :49:20.ball back from whence it came, because the other play host to get
:49:21. > :49:28.across. He has not missed too many so far
:49:29. > :49:47.this morning. We mentioned his backhand, but his
:49:48. > :49:52.forehand is useful as well. He hit it straight back, there was no
:49:53. > :50:00.chance for Tengteng Liu to get across. That was well gambled, by
:50:01. > :50:05.Tengteng Liu, he saw the dummy that Liam Pitchford was going to set him.
:50:06. > :50:39.He gambled and he made it, they have no other choice but to do so.
:50:40. > :50:55.Some distant again between them, 7-4.
:50:56. > :51:02.I think some observers expected Karen Li and Tengteng Liu to give
:51:03. > :51:06.the English pair a work-out here. It has not turned out like that so far.
:51:07. > :51:17.They are three points away from securing the match. You cannot play
:51:18. > :51:18.it short to Liam Pitchford's backhand and expect to get away with
:51:19. > :51:51.it. Karen Li has to hold both the
:51:52. > :51:56.service, you feel. So, five match points for Liam Pitchford and
:51:57. > :52:14.Tin-Tin Ho. After barely 20 minutes of play in Glasgow.
:52:15. > :52:30.Four match points left, and the next two are on the Liam Pitchford serve.
:52:31. > :52:42.Sometimes, getting over the line is the hardest part. Three saved by the
:52:43. > :52:48.Kiwis. I think they may take a time-out here. They did not like
:52:49. > :52:50.that run of three successive points won by New Zealander. They will have
:52:51. > :53:17.a chat. It was a good return from Tengteng
:53:18. > :53:26.Liu. You can see the time-out signal from the English coach.
:53:27. > :53:32.That was interesting, do not expect them to give you the point, he said.
:53:33. > :53:37.You can hear him quite clearly. They are going to have to earn it. There
:53:38. > :53:46.are still two match points, but the service is back with New Zealand.
:53:47. > :53:53.Tengteng Liu to Tin-Tin Ho. It is a great performance. In straight
:53:54. > :53:58.games, Liam Pitchford and Tin-Tin Ho through to the quarterfinals of
:53:59. > :54:03.mixed doubles. They have beaten Tengteng Liu and Karen Li pretty
:54:04. > :54:09.comp offensively. -- comprehensively.
:54:10. > :54:15.A great result for Liam Pitchford and Tin-Tin Ho, safely through to
:54:16. > :54:20.the quarterfinals. She is remarkable, she is only 15,
:54:21. > :54:27.Britain's leading junior player, and her father Charles loves table
:54:28. > :54:32.tennis so much, he named her because he wanted her to have the same
:54:33. > :54:38.initials as his favourite sport. You can watch more table tennis on the
:54:39. > :54:43.BBC sport website. If any of this has inspired you, there is a special
:54:44. > :54:46.section of the website, with the details about how you can get
:54:47. > :54:54.involved with a whole host of sports that you are seeing. Lots of
:54:55. > :54:58.inspirational stories and information about local facilities
:54:59. > :55:03.as well. A quick word on other sports this
:55:04. > :55:08.morning. On BBC Three, you can see the hockey live, England against
:55:09. > :55:12.Canada in the final pool match. It is 2-0 to England. It looks as
:55:13. > :55:18.though they are assured of a place in the semifinals.
:55:19. > :55:24.On the red button, you can watch the Para-sport triple bowls match that
:55:25. > :55:31.we were showing you earlier. The school is 8-6 to Scotland. This is
:55:32. > :55:38.England against Scotland. You can continue watching that live on the
:55:39. > :55:45.red button, and more later on BBC1. Now, time to turn our attention to
:55:46. > :55:50.cycling and the time trials. The women's event starts in a few
:55:51. > :55:54.minutes. Among those taking part, several cyclists from Rwanda, where
:55:55. > :55:58.the sport has taken off in recent years. Steve
:55:59. > :56:18.Who are we? Rwanda! In 1994, this why cycling has developed in

:56:34. > :56:37.Who are we? Rwanda! In 1994, this years. It is an unlikely story, a
:56:38. > :56:39.cycling race that has become the focus for a country, a team that has
:56:40. > :56:42.emerged from one of the worst focus for a country, a team that has
:56:43. > :56:47.chapters in human history, and is providing hope and inspiration for
:56:48. > :56:54.the future. I feel very proud of myself, 200 people have said, well
:56:55. > :56:56.done for what you did. Everything you want to do, you have in your
:56:57. > :57:10.heart, you can change in your The tour of Rwanda

:57:21. > :57:24.Africa. From three teams then to 16 to take heart. At its heart, a group
:57:25. > :57:26.of riders whose place in the pellet on what
:57:27. > :57:35.of riders whose place in the pellet a few years ago. Around 3 million
:57:36. > :57:38.people will watch it over its 800 kilometre journey, with the biggest
:57:39. > :57:48.cheers reserved for their new heroes, Rwanda.
:57:49. > :57:55.I am near the finish line, the prizes are being given out. I was
:57:56. > :58:01.not sure what to expect. It looked chaotic, but it was really well
:58:02. > :58:05.organised. You can see that these people really want their guys to do
:58:06. > :58:11.well in this sport. They came out in their thousands. Villages, towns,
:58:12. > :58:20.the odd little kid standing by the road, it was fantastic. Watching it
:58:21. > :58:22.had from the capital into the countryside and seeing how people
:58:23. > :58:28.responded to the cyclists was inspiring. Particularly when I
:58:29. > :58:36.thought back to the events of 1994. 20 kilometres from the finish line,
:58:37. > :58:42.a powerful reminder. 45,000 came to their local school seeking a
:58:43. > :58:48.century. But on one April night, it became anything but a sanctuary. In
:58:49. > :59:28.the morning, they attacked here. The thing I am struggling with a
:59:29. > :59:30.bit, the country has come out of that so quickly, and people seem to
:59:31. > :00:11.have moved on from it so quickly. My visit to the school left a
:00:12. > :00:15.lasting impression. What happened there was shocking. The numbers of
:00:16. > :00:18.people who died unbelievable. But at the same time, I heard a powerful
:00:19. > :00:27.message of a country trying to move forward. Being at a sport event
:00:28. > :00:31.which is having such an impact, and yet an hour later you are wondering
:00:32. > :00:36.around the site of such a terrible atrocity, it is hard to keep your
:00:37. > :00:41.emotions in check. The thing which struck me most, they are proud of
:00:42. > :00:45.their country, they want to be Rwandans, see the flag flying,
:00:46. > :00:51.people wearing their shirt, perhaps at a sporting games, and to see a
:00:52. > :00:57.better image of their country, not one that is still hankering back to
:00:58. > :00:59.1994. They have moved on, and they want us to move on with them as
:01:00. > :01:15.well. everywhere you look there are
:01:16. > :01:22.bicycles. Until 2007, there was no racing, no team. The idea of cycling
:01:23. > :01:27.did not really exist. It took an American charity and new mountain
:01:28. > :01:33.bikes to do something quite ground-breaking.
:01:34. > :01:38.What has been achieved here has never been seen anywhere before,
:01:39. > :01:43.from a cycling nation that came from zero to where we are. How can a
:01:44. > :01:47.country that has never been in cycling have the best race in
:01:48. > :01:51.Africa? The culture of cycling here has only been in the last couple of
:01:52. > :01:55.years. It has not been easy. Creating a
:01:56. > :02:00.team from scratch in a country still coming to terms with its past, and
:02:01. > :02:07.with no real history of sporting achievement, has had real
:02:08. > :02:12.challenges. We have 20 minutes before the start
:02:13. > :02:16.of the race. Rather touchingly, we are having a team photo. I'm not
:02:17. > :02:19.sure whether people might be expecting them to be more stressed
:02:20. > :02:21.out, warming up, getting ready to race. I wish I was like this before
:02:22. > :02:32.I was racing! We are in the traffic now. Getting
:02:33. > :02:50.the traffic moving! We are heading to see one of the
:02:51. > :02:55.original members of the team wonder cycling team. His name and his
:02:56. > :03:02.picture are on billboards, he is a local hero. A Jillie is a success
:03:03. > :03:07.story, he now writes for the best team in South Africa. Last summer he
:03:08. > :03:12.went to the Olympic Games in London. During the genocide, five of his
:03:13. > :03:23.brothers and his sister were killed. The bike has changed his life.
:03:24. > :03:29.Today, when we finish the stage, a lot of people came to hug me to say
:03:30. > :03:36.well done. We are a big fan. We like what you did.
:03:37. > :03:44.He has opened the door for everybody. In all blossoming sports,
:03:45. > :03:47.you have two have a hero. One of the best riders in the
:03:48. > :04:17.country, he is very strong. Everyone knows about Rwanda and the
:04:18. > :04:20.genocide. If you have been here, it is amazing.
:04:21. > :04:25.Adrien was a first, an inspiration, and has shown why Team Rwanda is not
:04:26. > :04:30.just about the bike. None of the riders are rich, but many have
:04:31. > :04:36.managed to buy a house from their salary.
:04:37. > :04:40.Cycling is a job like any other job. It can change your life. It
:04:41. > :04:49.became my job. Many people know cycling can change
:04:50. > :05:11.your life. Here comes the main peleton. It is a
:05:12. > :05:24.brutal race. A real boneshaker section.
:05:25. > :05:29.If we go back to 1994, a bike meant you might escape the genocide. You
:05:30. > :05:32.come back to after the genocide if you have a bike, you can transport
:05:33. > :05:37.people, you have an income. Now, you have a whole generation
:05:38. > :05:43.that is looking at cycling to actually be to succeed in racing. It
:05:44. > :05:45.is pulling people together that would have been enemies during the
:05:46. > :05:56.genocide. Our team is all Rwandan, from
:05:57. > :06:01.different regions, working together for it to succeed.
:06:02. > :06:11.Rwanda, there were only six wide long ago.
:06:12. > :06:16.-- riders. So you think cycling is helping
:06:17. > :06:35.people to forget what happened? There is no home winner today but an
:06:36. > :06:40.incredible event, and I open. The amount of people out to support this
:06:41. > :06:44.Tour of Rwanda is incredible. They obviously love this sport. While
:06:45. > :06:48.they haven't got a winner to cheer today, I am sure they will sometime
:06:49. > :06:54.in the future. For the time being, it is Adrien they are having to
:06:55. > :07:01.chase. As my time in Rwanda drew to a
:07:02. > :07:05.close, I was struck by something Nelson Mandela once said. Sport can
:07:06. > :07:09.create hope where once there was only despair. It is not a grandiose
:07:10. > :07:13.statement, it is not difficult to see how this incredible team
:07:14. > :07:16.embodies the pride and hope of a nation whose progress in such a
:07:17. > :07:27.short space of time is, in itself, remarkable.
:07:28. > :07:30.And ageing Niyonshuti be competing later on.
:07:31. > :07:39.Let us go to Glasgow Green now. later on.
:07:40. > :07:44.Janvier Hadi is the man I want later on.
:07:45. > :07:48.talk to today, he will become the 62nd member of the 71 Club, if
:07:49. > :07:52.talk to today, he will become the find him. He came fifth in the
:07:53. > :07:57.African National Championships last year. He won the prologue of the
:07:58. > :08:02.Tour of Rwanda in 2013 and he described that as the biggest race
:08:03. > :08:11.of his life. This will be a huge race to him and the
:08:12. > :08:13.of his life. This will be a huge heading out to the
:08:14. > :08:17.of his life. This will be a huge women's time trial begins. We have
:08:18. > :08:24.three members of the Guernsey team I want to catch up with. Ann Bowditch
:08:25. > :08:39.is a hypnotherapist from Guernsey. We spoke to Tamiko Butler at the
:08:40. > :08:43.track cycling earlier in the games. A lot from the smaller countries
:08:44. > :08:49.will be doing both. She turned up with a race suit which have been
:08:50. > :08:54.changed in two years, with borrowed wheels from British competitors. She
:08:55. > :09:03.had barely trained in an Olympic sized velodrome before. She is her
:09:04. > :09:08.national champion of Antigua. As far as we're concerned, this afternoon,
:09:09. > :09:18.we heading to the weightlifting, a couple more opportunities for me. I
:09:19. > :09:24.have an opportunity for at least five today in the 71 Club.
:09:25. > :09:28.You can find out how Ollie gets on today on Tonight at The Games,
:09:29. > :09:48.The women's time trial is about to get under way. There is plenty of
:09:49. > :09:49.home nations interest. Pitting individual cyclists against the
:09:50. > :09:54.clock. In time trial,
:09:55. > :09:56.cyclists race against the clock They set off 90 seconds apart, and
:09:57. > :10:04.complete a single lap of the course. The men's time trial is 40km long,
:10:05. > :10:11.with women riding 30km. Competitors begin
:10:12. > :10:13.from a stationary position at the top of a ramp, the highest
:10:14. > :10:23.ranked rider is the last to go. A cyclist adopts an aerodynamic
:10:24. > :10:26.position on the bike, the bikes are made of carbon fibre designed
:10:27. > :10:29.to be as narrow as possible. Because of this, riders can reach
:10:30. > :10:53.speeds of up to 45 miles an hour One rider to watch out for is Emma
:10:54. > :11:03.Pooley who won silver in the Beijing Olympics. Today will be her final
:11:04. > :11:07.race before she retires. COMMENTATOR: Emma Pooley is the
:11:08. > :11:11.rider we are here to see. It is at the back of your mind it is
:11:12. > :11:15.good to go out on a hike but I don't want to put pressure on me. I want
:11:16. > :11:25.to do but anyway. I want to do my best. She is
:11:26. > :11:31.certainly in very good form. It is not that long, you have to
:11:32. > :11:35.ride as long, as fast as you can. When you are pushing hard, it hurts,
:11:36. > :11:39.it should do. She is one of the greatest climbers
:11:40. > :11:44.on the women's circuit. What would suit me is 30 kilometres
:11:45. > :11:48.uphill but that does not exist in a time trial in Great Britain. It is
:11:49. > :11:53.bumpy, it is tough. It suits me better than the last, Web games

:12:10. > :12:13.Whatever happens, I can retire content with what I have done in the
:12:14. > :12:16.sport. Silver medal winner, Emma Pooley
:12:17. > :12:20.from Great Britain. Given I never expected to be a
:12:21. > :12:27.cyclist, I can be pleased with what I have done, given my ability.
:12:28. > :12:30.Emma Pooley is due to start last but one.
:12:31. > :12:39.Let us head to the start of the race. Jonathan Edwards is there.
:12:40. > :12:45.After 50 minutes of pain, they will be finishing somewhere over there,
:12:46. > :12:49.if you move around here. The start is just here. What they will be
:12:50. > :12:57.concerned about is the conditions. The sun is poking out through dark
:12:58. > :13:06.clouds. But there is a lot of this which is tricky in the wet weather.
:13:07. > :13:14.As they head out through the East End of Glasgow, this is where it
:13:15. > :13:26.starts to open out. Through the countryside. Not an overly technical
:13:27. > :13:36.course. But constant and relations. Lots of change of direction.
:13:37. > :13:43.A lot of the sharper bairns also have a slight uphill towards them.
:13:44. > :13:48.It is that last section in the park which is extremely technical, the
:13:49. > :13:54.penultimate corner which could be treacherous.
:13:55. > :14:03.A technical course, that is for sure. Joanna Rowsell is one we will
:14:04. > :14:11.be looking out for. This is where they do the bike checks. She has
:14:12. > :14:16.already won a gold medal in the individual pursuit. Emma Pooley will
:14:17. > :14:29.retire from road cycling after this, a world time trial champion in 2010.
:14:30. > :14:32.Katie Archibald, Elinor Barker, and Linda Villumsen, the one they have

:15:14. > :15:30.race in Florence last year. champion of last year, a very
:15:31. > :15:37.promising young rider. It is only a 45 minute race, it is not a long
:15:38. > :15:46.one, so they have to commit very early on. Get stuck in to this
:15:47. > :15:52.course. There is a big section of fast downhill as they run towards
:15:53. > :15:55.the park. They can commit early on, get most of their effort out in the
:15:56. > :16:00.early part of the race, and then just hang onto it. It is not
:16:01. > :16:09.necessarily an even pace that is required today.
:16:10. > :16:23.29.6 kilometres lying ahead. The 25-year-old, Reta Trotman, who lives
:16:24. > :16:29.in Germany. A former gymnast, she won a national title earlier in her
:16:30. > :16:32.career in that sport. She started cycling in her second year at
:16:33. > :16:37.university. She missed her graduation day because it was the
:16:38. > :16:42.same day as the national road race championship, but she made it
:16:43. > :16:45.worthwhile by winning it. We can give you an idea of the wider
:16:46. > :17:02.progress as they go through the checkpoints.
:17:03. > :17:09.10.26 at the first checkpoint is the time to beat. Katrin Garfoot started
:17:10. > :17:15.the season with her national team, which landed herself a short-term
:17:16. > :17:23.contract in Europe. She finished in the first group in a breed -- a big
:17:24. > :17:29.Sprint classic race. She then realised she could mix it with the
:17:30. > :17:37.best riders on a good day in Europe at world level. Here she is, then,
:17:38. > :17:43.for Australia, between Garforth. Her chin strap is flapping in the wind,
:17:44. > :17:51.all of the aerodynamic attention to detail! Amy Roberts making her way
:17:52. > :17:53.out of the city. She is halfway to the first checkpoint. The roads are
:17:54. > :18:03.very wet. The gaps between the also affect the results. A good
:18:04. > :18:22.rider here, Jasmin Glaesser. Jasmin Glaesser with a couple of
:18:23. > :18:24.medals here. A silver in the team pursuit. She was the bronze
:18:25. > :18:32.medallist in the points race as well. She rode three events on the
:18:33. > :18:38.track at the beginning of the Commonwealth Games. She is a really
:18:39. > :18:45.promising rider, just 22. She Commonwealth Games. She is a really
:18:46. > :18:48.about to turn right into Gallowgate and make our way towards
:18:49. > :18:54.about to turn right into Gallowgate End. There is Joanna Rowsell. A
:18:55. > :18:58.double world champion. In the team pursuit and individual pursuit. The
:18:59. > :19:06.Commonwealth champion in the individual pursuit. And the Olympic
:19:07. > :19:11.games gold medallist as well. She is the big unknown today, though. A
:19:12. > :19:12.very powerful rider. Has she managed to make the switch to road in a
:19:13. > :19:18.very powerful rider. Has she managed short days? The potential is there,
:19:19. > :19:22.the form is there, but can she switch it to an effort
:19:23. > :19:25.the form is there, but can she minutes long, as opposed to three
:19:26. > :19:29.and a half minutes? Once she gets into her rhythm, she has the
:19:30. > :19:31.and a half minutes? Once she gets somebody who can maintain that.
:19:32. > :19:37.Almost indefinitely. But somebody who can maintain that.
:19:38. > :19:43.constant changing nature of the route, I imagine it is difficult to
:19:44. > :19:49.just settle into one rhythm. It is hard for her, it is not the ideal
:19:50. > :19:54.circuit, as we saw in Delhi, that circuit would have been ideal for a
:19:55. > :19:58.powerful rider like her. Technically as well, she is not the best rider
:19:59. > :20:04.here. It is a punchy course, which is not her style. But I would not
:20:05. > :20:16.rule her out, the form she is in. Anna Turvey for Scotland. Down from
:20:17. > :20:21.the starter's gate. She leaves Glasgow Green behind. Some of the
:20:22. > :20:30.seedings are interesting, Joanna Rowsell in 19th spot, I think it is
:20:31. > :20:32.quite surprisingly. Anna Turvey is an optician from Sunderland, she
:20:33. > :20:39.only took up competitive cycling last summer. She said, if somebody
:20:40. > :20:43.had suggested to her a few months ago she would be here, she would
:20:44. > :20:49.have laughed. But here she is. She seems to be successful at whatever
:20:50. > :20:53.she takes up. She had similar success with triathlon in the last
:20:54. > :21:08.few years. And now on two wheels as well. She is approaching the
:21:09. > :21:15.checkpoint. She is in arrears. The Cypriot setting a fast time at the
:21:16. > :21:20.first checkpoint. A good set -- start from the Cypriot, a surprise
:21:21. > :21:23.that she is nearly 21 seconds ahead of Laura Brown. It is a
:21:24. > :21:27.that she is nearly 21 seconds ahead we come back to Joanna Rowsell.
:21:28. > :21:36.After the amount of work she has been doing on the track, 120 rpm,
:21:37. > :21:41.she is pushing such a large gear at the moment. This is uphill, at least
:21:42. > :21:51.slightly, for the first ten kilometres. She is carrying a radio
:21:52. > :22:00.under the skin suit, so she will be getting some time information.
:22:01. > :22:17.Chiara Rosa one from Wales is a nonstarter.
:22:18. > :22:34.Amy Roberts has just gone fastest at the checkpoint, 10.06. That is the
:22:35. > :22:35.new mark to beat. There is the fastest rider on the course at the
:22:36. > :22:56.moment, Amy Roberts. Joanna Rowsell really grinding the
:22:57. > :23:04.gear. It is not what I would have expected from her at the moment.
:23:05. > :23:12.Already looking quite laboured. Jaime Nielsen for New Zealand. The
:23:13. > :23:13.best ever return on the track for the Kiwis here at the Commonwealth
:23:14. > :23:52.Games. Lucy Coldwell, the fastest so far at
:23:53. > :23:58.the first checkpoint, a good start for her. The roads are drying out,
:23:59. > :24:06.which will make a difference to the latest otters, because it is quite
:24:07. > :24:12.warm, despite the cloudy conditions. The roads are drying out quickly.

:24:23. > :24:25.mountain biking 20 years ago, she switched to road racing in 1997. She
:24:26. > :24:49.owns her own hypnotherapy company. Joanna Rowsell heading out through
:24:50. > :24:55.the East End. The route taking a left-hand turn shortly before it
:24:56. > :25:02.gets to Celtic Park. A stone's throwaway, a long stone's throw
:25:03. > :25:03.away, from the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, before disappearing out
:25:04. > :25:17.the city. Leah Kirchmann, from Winnipeg, third
:25:18. > :25:26.in the inaugural race on the John lyc?e on Sunday, just beaten. But
:25:27. > :25:31.she has been in great form this year. She made Canadian cycling
:25:32. > :25:38.history this summer, winning all three national championship road
:25:39. > :25:44.events. Not really the event for her today, I think. The road race on
:25:45. > :25:48.Sunday, we will be watching out. It is a more technical course than this
:25:49. > :25:56.one. She was in the Tour of Britain in May, finishing in 12th place Leah
:25:57. > :26:08.Kirchmann. Joanna Rowsell driving away towards the first time check.
:26:09. > :26:13.Elinor Barker was so unlucky in the points race, it was a drum in this
:26:14. > :26:16.battle at the top of the leaderboard, right to the wire.
:26:17. > :26:21.Losing on current back to Laura Trott. She ended up with a silver to
:26:22. > :26:26.go with the bronze she had already won on the track. But she could be a
:26:27. > :26:31.factor in this, partly because of the form she is in, and when you
:26:32. > :26:35.look back at her career, a former world champion as a junior in this
:26:36. > :26:42.event. She is a goodbye Candler, you could see that on the first term,
:26:43. > :26:46.she was faster round one single bend than the other riders, which will
:26:47. > :26:51.add up on a technical circuit, with hardly any long straights. They
:26:52. > :26:59.probably do not do more than a kilometre at any point before they
:27:00. > :27:03.encounter a bend. Lucy Coldwell with the fastest time so far. 16 riders
:27:04. > :27:08.have gone through the first time check. But it has been beaten,
:27:09. > :27:13.have gone through the first time Katrin Garfoot. That is a time that
:27:14. > :27:18.will steadily come down. The average speed, 38.6, this is the uphill
:27:19. > :27:23.section of the course, so they will average a shade over 40 by the time
:27:24. > :27:28.they get to the end, which is a little under 45 minutes of racing. A
:27:29. > :27:36.local favourite, Katie Archibald, just 20. A real racer, a real
:27:37. > :27:43.animator. She looks well composed. Not many riders going hard at the
:27:44. > :27:45.blogs. I am not sure that is the best strategy, with such a short
:27:46. > :27:51.race, you have to do is every metre of road at your disposal. The crowds
:27:52. > :28:00.are wobbling as she goes through the second bend.
:28:01. > :28:07.Joanna Rowsell should not be far away from the first check point. She
:28:08. > :28:09.seems to be getting more into her stride, her cadence is coming up,
:28:10. > :28:16.she looks more comfortable and settled.
:28:17. > :28:27.The Mauritian cyclist, 27, she wrote the mountain bike race the other
:28:28. > :28:32.day. She did not manage to finish. She was 14th in Delhi four years
:28:33. > :28:42.ago. She finished the Olympic road race in paging. A full-time athlete
:28:43. > :28:49.of the year in Mauritius. Jasmin Glaesser a bit outside the time set
:28:50. > :28:56.by Katrin Garfoot. But it is the second quickest bus far at the first
:28:57. > :29:02.of the three time checks. 29.6 can is the distance. She has got a sharp
:29:03. > :29:08.left-hand turn immediately after that point. This is the worst road
:29:09. > :29:12.conditions you could have, part wet, part right, you do not know what
:29:13. > :29:16.will be around the corner, you have part right, you do not know what
:29:17. > :29:28.to make a choice. The South African is underway. She has had a good
:29:29. > :29:29.season on the road, 21st in the tour of Flanders, she spends half the
:29:30. > :29:37.year in South in Italy. Here is Joanna Rowsell
:29:38. > :29:45.coming up towards the first checkpoint. She is not the fastest,
:29:46. > :29:48.by some margin. She had a laboured looking start, that seems
:29:49. > :29:51.by some margin. She had a laboured reflected in her first checkpoint.
:29:52. > :29:58.It is a technical course, which is not ideal for her, but she looks a
:29:59. > :30:02.lot more fluid now. It will get interesting now, just where she was,
:30:03. > :30:05.there is the sharp left-hand turn, then you had out towards the
:30:06. > :30:09.countryside, and then you had out towards the
:30:10. > :30:19.exposed on either side of the road. Shara Gillow gets underway, we only
:30:20. > :30:29.have two more riders after her. Shara Gillow is the dark horse, she
:30:30. > :30:41.could surprise quite a few people. One of the only ones likely to
:30:42. > :30:44.challenge Villumsen and Poole. From Queensland. Runner-up in the
:30:45. > :30:48.national championships in Australia this year. She has won it twice
:30:49. > :30:52.before. What is working against her, it is
:30:53. > :30:58.starting to rain. The roads were trying out nicely. This is a pattern
:30:59. > :31:04.we will see for the rest of the day. This is Emma Pooley who suggested
:31:05. > :31:11.this morning she is not too fussed if it rains.
:31:12. > :31:15.Very good technically. She likes this style of course. The woman to
:31:16. > :31:18.beat. Commonwealth champion in this event
:31:19. > :31:27.but it needs to be the right course to suit her style of riding.
:31:28. > :31:34.I think we will see a lot from her as a sportswoman, she is a marathon
:31:35. > :31:38.one, she won in Z?rich last year. I think she wants to explore endurance
:31:39. > :31:43.sports like that. What a cycling career she has had. Who knows
:31:44. > :31:51.whether she can finish on a high. And she is riding on the road base
:31:52. > :32:00.-- in the road race on Sunday. Garfoot is the fastest rider in
:32:01. > :32:04.terms of the first time check. We concede the different weather
:32:05. > :32:08.conditions. Bouilhou I think will be tough to beat. One person can do it,
:32:09. > :32:19.Linda Villumsen. From New Zealand. Alt of the gate.
:32:20. > :32:24.Williamson is highly fancied here, silver medallist four years ago in
:32:25. > :32:30.this event. She finished just outside the medals in the time trial
:32:31. > :32:34.in London, in fourth place. In the World Championships, she has a
:32:35. > :32:41.really good record without quite managing to win the lot, twice she
:32:42. > :32:44.has won silver, and bronze three times.
:32:45. > :32:50.Very powerful out of the gate, committed.
:32:51. > :32:55.Michelle Gilmore, her team manager, said she was very nervous, as was
:32:56. > :32:59.Emma Pooley this morning. Both of them once they are out on the road,
:33:00. > :33:07.their instinct will kick in. Emma Pooley looks in fantastic shape.
:33:08. > :33:17.their instinct will kick in. Emma the track, in her year off! I think
:33:18. > :33:23.she can turn her hand to anything she wants.
:33:24. > :33:28.What about Katie Archibald? Only a couple of years since she has
:33:29. > :33:31.What about Katie Archibald? Only a cycling truly seriously. All the
:33:32. > :33:38.time, she is placed into new surroundings, tries new events, she
:33:39. > :33:43.seems to adapt very successfully. A good bike handler. Today she has
:33:44. > :33:51.that added motivation in front of her home nation.
:33:52. > :34:01.Powering along as she heads out of Glasgow to the north east of the
:34:02. > :34:04.city. The wind is not what it was
:34:05. > :34:17.yesterday. Extremely strong yesterday. Up to ten miles an hour
:34:18. > :34:24.this morning. Hardly blowing at all at the moment. But this brain may
:34:25. > :34:30.figure. It is really coming down on the course now.
:34:31. > :34:34.Williamson is a rider keen to keep going to Rio, a big ambition to win
:34:35. > :34:39.an Olympic medal. It took awhile for her to get going after London 12,
:34:40. > :34:46.suffering from lack of motivation, thought about retiring. Then she had
:34:47. > :34:53.the opportunity to join her new team and be her enthusiasm. Katrin
:34:54. > :35:05.Garfoot so far with the fastest time at the checkpoint. 6.4 -- 6.1
:35:06. > :35:06.kilometres is the first cheque. Koech Mann from Canada comes up to
:35:07. > :35:35.the first time check. They almost double up past
:35:36. > :35:43.themselves after the first time check.
:35:44. > :35:50.Villumsen is driving away, powering down through those pedals, shifting
:35:51. > :35:54.positions, a sign of the power she is putting through the pedals,
:35:55. > :35:59.constantly adjusting the position. No problems with these corners. Our
:36:00. > :36:08.cameras are not picking up how rough some of these surfaces are, up to 28
:36:09. > :36:12.millimetre tyres. That will help in these conditions. Different
:36:13. > :36:21.conditions than we are seeing for Elinor Barker.
:36:22. > :36:27.The second fastest so far. Barker and Archibald are the two dark
:36:28. > :36:32.horses, challenging Bouilhou and Villumsen. A massive opportunity for
:36:33. > :36:42.them. Archibald looks very smooth, towing style. The best kind of style
:36:43. > :36:45.for a course like this constantly changing gradients.
:36:46. > :36:49.The road surface is constantly changing, with if you lumps and
:36:50. > :36:55.bumps. Yesterday, perhaps the smoothest part we saw was on one of
:36:56. > :36:56.the furthest parts in the middle of nowhere unaware they had be surfaced
:36:57. > :37:09.a narrow country lane. -- where nowhere unaware they had be surfaced
:37:10. > :37:22.had resurfaced. You can see the road surface is
:37:23. > :37:27.totally changing here. As she takes the dog leg after the first check.
:37:28. > :37:35.One of the more technical corners. Wet and dry conditions. Hard to tell
:37:36. > :37:42.how to set the bike up for a corner. She is settling down into a rhythm
:37:43. > :37:47.along Royston Road. As we look back at Katrin Garfoot who is further
:37:48. > :37:53.ahead. Only nine riders have gone through the second time check so
:37:54. > :38:01.far. It was Amy Roberts who was in first
:38:02. > :38:22.position at that check. She was night at the first. -- ninth.
:38:23. > :38:32.A very low position, she is very small and takes full advantage of
:38:33. > :38:37.that. She might not have the absolute power output but she is
:38:38. > :38:41.extremely efficient. As soon as the road starts going uphill, it moves
:38:42. > :38:52.in her favour. She has been in good form it with
:38:53. > :38:56.the national road time trial title. You can see the form in her muscle
:38:57. > :39:03.definition. She benefited from taking a year away from the sport of
:39:04. > :39:12.cycling. Back with the last rider, Linda
:39:13. > :39:14.Villumsen of New Zealand. Sharqia lo will be coming up to the
:39:15. > :39:59.check point soon. -- Shara Gillow. A glimpse of the flags showing it is
:40:00. > :40:04.blowing quite hard. It is quite exposed up there.
:40:05. > :40:15.The best time so far for the former Australian national champion.
:40:16. > :40:51.She is certainly riding well. A slight malfunction on the timing but
:40:52. > :40:57.that was definitely at 6.4 kilometres. Bouilhou is the fastest
:40:58. > :41:07.rider so far. It has not picked up on the check. But we can tell from
:41:08. > :41:14.the time gap. A little problem with the transponder on her bike.
:41:15. > :41:25.Clearly, storming. As we switch back to Williamson, the favourite.
:41:26. > :41:28.Definitely, she is the fastest, by a good 20 seconds. 25 seconds. Strong
:41:29. > :41:46.riding. Villumsen is very quick. At the
:41:47. > :41:50.moment, Linda Villumsen and Emma Pooley are the fastest two riders
:41:51. > :41:56.out on the course. There is clearly an issue with the transponder for
:41:57. > :42:06.Emma Pooley because her time has not come up at all.
:42:07. > :42:12.We will make sure we get you some check K -- checks.
:42:13. > :42:18.She looks so comfortable. In a good position for this kind of course.
:42:19. > :42:25.She is quite comfortable with climbing, so she can stay in that
:42:26. > :42:30.aerodynamic tuck much longer than if she had been in an extreme down
:42:31. > :42:46.position. A second time check.
:42:47. > :42:53.The road is virtually dry on this section of the course, very

:43:01. > :43:04.constantly changing. The sun has come out on Glasgow green. But it

:43:09. > :43:18.It will be like this for the rest of the day.
:43:19. > :43:26.Getting the flag to warn of impending dangers. You can see it is
:43:27. > :43:33.completely dry here. And how that changes, the way they tackle these
:43:34. > :43:37.corners. Staying completely tucked and in position. The motorbike
:43:38. > :43:43.outside that all the top riders have, 50m in front, it gives a good
:43:44. > :43:48.indication of what line to take. If you have a blind bend, the rider can
:43:49. > :44:02.see it before, seeing their brake lights let you know you can float
:44:03. > :44:09.around the corner. -- lets you know. Shara Gillow is riding well here in
:44:10. > :44:16.the early stages of this race. As is Emma Pooley. She has gone up the
:44:17. > :44:21.gears are little now, Emma Pooley, settling into this bride. She has
:44:22. > :44:33.got over the nerves at the start now. She has gone for a slightly
:44:34. > :44:40.less shallow rim than Villumsen. Bouilhou is a slightly lighter
:44:41. > :44:45.rider. Not much wind around. It is exposed in sections, this course.
:44:46. > :44:49.With speed getting up to 70 kilometres per hour downhill, it can
:44:50. > :44:54.take you by surprise. Look at the difference in weather
:44:55. > :45:15.conditions. If you minutes. Here is Katie Archibald. -- a few minutes.
:45:16. > :45:21.is the rider who went just off in front of Katie Archibald. We were
:45:22. > :45:26.speaking about Leah Kirchmann earlier, she was third in Paris, but
:45:27. > :45:31.she is not enjoying this course. She will be waiting for the road race,
:45:32. > :45:36.running off some steam today. Katie Archibald has not been out of the
:45:37. > :45:39.rain today. You can see that the conditions could be a lot worse than
:45:40. > :45:49.they are now, despite the fact it is raining. It was blowing yesterday.
:45:50. > :45:56.Katie Archibald maintaining a nice rhythm. This is Katrin Garfoot.
:45:57. > :46:04.Plenty of miles in her legs this year. 28th in that you read Italia.
:46:05. > :46:09.At the second checkpoint, Joanna Rowsell has gone through in fourth
:46:10. > :46:13.place, 25 seconds off the pace. She will not be in the hunt for a medal
:46:14. > :46:18.today, that is too much time to turn around. She struggled to change the
:46:19. > :46:24.training she has done from the short events to the time trial. The second
:46:25. > :46:30.time check, Anna Turvey is just over half a minute down on Katrin
:46:31. > :46:39.Garfoot. Many of the fastest riders still to come through.
:46:40. > :46:47.We have now got the time check from the first mark, and they have got it
:46:48. > :47:00.right, Emma Pooley is the fastest. Although it is the early going, at
:47:01. > :47:02.the moment, Katie Archibald would be three seconds outside a medal, but a
:47:03. > :47:07.long way to go. three seconds outside a medal, but a
:47:08. > :47:13.still in the hunt for a medal. Katie Archibald could get herself onto the
:47:14. > :47:19.podium if she could overhaul Shara Gillow. It will be tough, but she is
:47:20. > :47:23.in touch. Linda Villumsen and Emma Pooley seem to be a long way ahead
:47:24. > :47:25.for the gold medal. 1.3 seconds for the gold medal. 1.3 seconds
:47:26. > :47:33.between them at the first check point. Was the first part of the
:47:34. > :47:39.course is the most favourable to Emma Pooley? The constant incline?
:47:40. > :47:46.The middle section has got some descents, but it also has some sharp
:47:47. > :47:50.rises. You are right, she has probably had the most favourable
:47:51. > :47:54.part of the course for her. The first rider coming towards the line.
:47:55. > :48:06.The 22-year-old from Nicosia in Cyprus. It gives us an indication.
:48:07. > :48:18.It'll be around 43, 44 minutes for the winners.
:48:19. > :48:26.Linda Villumsen has settled into a smooth rhythm now. A third of the
:48:27. > :48:32.way through her day. A smooth, sweeping bend. There is a choice, do
:48:33. > :48:36.you go for the shortest line or the smoothest line? The road surface is
:48:37. > :48:41.different. She is hugging the middle of the road, not necessarily be
:48:42. > :48:48.shortest line, but she keeps the pace high. Jaime Nielsen, she rode
:48:49. > :48:58.on the track the other day, fifth in the individual pursuit. Some solid
:48:59. > :49:10.riding there. She is good at team pursuit as well. Shah regular from
:49:11. > :49:17.Australia. She is the third fastest at the first time check. Just ahead
:49:18. > :49:21.of Katie Archibald. There could be a battle between them for the bronze
:49:22. > :49:27.medal. It might come down to who is the better bike handle of the two.
:49:28. > :49:31.Physically, Shara Gillow is ever so slightly stronger on the first
:49:32. > :49:35.section, but this is now a different part of the course, a different set
:49:36. > :49:41.of demands, constantly undulating, before they drop back down. It is
:49:42. > :49:49.hard to make much time in that final section. This is where Katie
:49:50. > :49:53.Archibald has got to do it if she wants to get onto the podium. It is
:49:54. > :50:00.only the fifth time this has been held, this event. Here is Emma
:50:01. > :50:11.Pooley, the 2010 world champion, she went on a lumpy course in Australia.
:50:12. > :50:17.It has been raining quite consistently a few kilometres away.
:50:18. > :50:22.It is a steep ramp that she was hitting, only 100 metres long, but a
:50:23. > :50:35.one in seven gradient. She likes that kind of terrain.
:50:36. > :50:46.Emma Pooley the quickest on the favourites come through.
:50:47. > :50:59.Emma Pooley the quickest on the course at the first time check.
:51:00. > :51:05.Emma Pooley the quickest on the Julia Shaw for England, taking the
:51:06. > :51:06.bronze in Delhi. It has been Canada and Australia with two victories
:51:07. > :51:18.apiece so far. Linda Villumsen and Julia Short the
:51:19. > :51:21.only riders from any other nation to get on the podium in this race.
:51:22. > :51:30.Elinor Barker and get on the podium in this race.
:51:31. > :51:36.are approaching the next time check. Elinor Barker is still there or
:51:37. > :51:38.are approaching the next time check. thereabouts. Still putting in a
:51:39. > :51:41.decent ride, which is what we would thereabouts. Still putting in a
:51:42. > :51:49.expect from this excellent cyclist, the 19-year-old from Cardiff. Here
:51:50. > :51:57.is Katie Archibald, from the other side of the city. What a time!
:51:58. > :52:05.Superb, the new fastest time so far the second time check. She looks
:52:06. > :52:13.laboured now, but it is really quite steep through these sets of houses.
:52:14. > :52:16.Probably about 10% gradient. Staying in that position,
:52:17. > :52:21.Probably about 10% gradient. Staying effort, she is totally committed.
:52:22. > :52:29.She will know she is in the hunt for a medal.
:52:30. > :52:32.Looking for another medal to go with the points race bronze from the
:52:33. > :52:43.other day. Very, very strong. It is an enormous chunk of time, 21
:52:44. > :52:58.seconds. She was 27 seconds outside the time
:52:59. > :53:05.of Emma Pooley at the first time check. We will see at the second
:53:06. > :53:11.time check how people are dealing with the different rain. You can
:53:12. > :53:17.chunk of this course up into three sections, the first uphill section,
:53:18. > :53:23.and undulating, twisty section... A constant change of rhythm. And then,
:53:24. > :53:27.a fast run into town, with the final technical section in the park, but
:53:28. > :53:32.the latter is so short, it is on likely to affect the result. Celtic
:53:33. > :53:42.Park and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome there. Shara Gillow frustrate Leah.
:53:43. > :53:58.She is catching to riders at once. Very smooth, settled position, this
:53:59. > :54:06.is a fast section. She is flying along the road. The rider from
:54:07. > :54:09.Mauritius will be caught first. And it is the South African in front of
:54:10. > :54:11.Mauritius will be caught first. And her. She is chasing the slipstream
:54:12. > :54:14.is, not coming her. She is chasing the slipstream
:54:15. > :54:23.all. Some of the riders have gone onto the drops, but not at all, she
:54:24. > :54:30.looks very smooth, staying in the slipstream of the rider in front.
:54:31. > :54:35.Maximising her prize catch. The national champion in her own time
:54:36. > :54:39.trial, voted Africa's most influential woman in sport. But she
:54:40. > :54:49.is not going to hold that pace influential woman in sport. But she
:54:50. > :54:57.shah regular from Australia. The onus is on the South African to drop
:54:58. > :55:01.back, having been caught. It is interesting that she is paying the
:55:02. > :55:10.price for getting caught, or for doing the catching, rather. Being
:55:11. > :55:14.challenged again. She is outside the time of Katie Archibald now. Katie
:55:15. > :55:23.Archibald has gone really strongly in the second section. A turning of
:55:24. > :55:30.the tables. It is a massive change in fortunes. Here is Emma Pooley,
:55:31. > :55:35.about to catch Shara Gillow. We did not see her coming at all! So many
:55:36. > :55:40.of them gathered up, it looks like a breakaway in a road race! She is
:55:41. > :55:48.probably going to kilometres an hour faster. That is incredible
:55:49. > :55:53.acceleration. That puts her fastest by 36 seconds, which is an enormous
:55:54. > :55:58.lead. Surely only Linda Villumsen can catch that. This is superb
:55:59. > :56:01.focused riding from Emma Pooley. Linda Villumsen is the only rider
:56:02. > :56:11.still to come through the second time check, she cannot be far away.
:56:12. > :56:19.The road should start to go uphill a bit here for Linda Villumsen. She is
:56:20. > :56:29.outside, but it is just as close. That has not changed at all! I am
:56:30. > :56:36.sure it was 1.3 seconds. 0.05 seconds, incredibly close! Emma
:56:37. > :56:42.Pooley leading the way by not more than the blinking of New Zealand.
:56:43. > :56:48.This all the medallist from Delhi. Both bring superbly. I said the last
:56:49. > :56:52.section is on likely to make a difference, but it is so close now,
:56:53. > :56:57.any corner can make the difference between gold and silver as it
:56:58. > :57:02.stands. Katie Archibald has given herself a decent cushion ahead of
:57:03. > :57:09.Katrin Garfoot. Shara Gillow has slipped away, after making a
:57:10. > :57:20.positive start. Elinor Barker is down in eighth place, Joanna Rowsell
:57:21. > :57:26.in 10th place. Amy Roberts from Wales is in 11th place, Anna Turvey
:57:27. > :57:32.from Scotland is in 12th place. Emma Pooley driving away. Back out on the
:57:33. > :57:39.open roads. In and out of the technical sections. One of the
:57:40. > :57:42.designers of the course said he wanted to give something of
:57:43. > :57:46.everything, to break up the rhythm, and he has done that. If there is
:57:47. > :57:51.one rider maintaining the rhythm, it is Emma Pooley, she looks the same
:57:52. > :57:56.every time we get a shot of her. She trains and not in this position, she
:57:57. > :58:03.had some special handlebars made for the Olympic Games in 2012. That is
:58:04. > :58:08.the same set. She is so small, she struggles to get the position
:58:09. > :58:10.the same set. She is so small, she wants on standard equipment. I
:58:11. > :58:16.remember when she won the silver medal in Beijing if users go on a
:58:17. > :58:24.course that really suited her style at the time. Katie Archibald into
:58:25. > :58:27.the sunshine, for the next five minutes at least. That is the first
:58:28. > :58:31.dry road she has seen today, but it has not bothered her. She was not
:58:32. > :58:35.too comfortable on the climbing section, she did the damage on the
:58:36. > :58:38.middle section, and she may enjoy the run in back to town. That is Ann
:58:39. > :58:54.Bowditch from Guernsey. Here now, just out
:58:55. > :58:59.on the right hand side, the riders from New Zealand. Katrin Garfoot
:59:00. > :59:09.through the centre. It is a lot faster than we thought it might be.
:59:10. > :59:15.In towards the finish, it is almost like a sprint between the pair of
:59:16. > :59:20.them. Katrin Garfoot comes in, and that is Reta Trotman from New
:59:21. > :59:29.Zealand as well. Katrin Garfoot is going to set the fastest time.
:59:30. > :59:34.Katrin Garfoot out on because at the only point at which they have all
:59:35. > :59:41.gone through, for fastest, but she will be the new leader in the
:59:42. > :59:43.clubhouse. It has dried up at the moment. The wind is blowing a bit at

:00:12. > :00:28.Everybody has to go she did it well until now.
:00:29. > :00:37.nearly 50 seconds. A good ride from Katrin Garfoot who has had an
:00:38. > :00:44.excellent year. Here is Katie Archibald is now. The world champion
:00:45. > :00:54.on the track in the team pursuit squad. She has come through six
:00:55. > :01:00.seconds to the good ahead of Katrin Garfoot at the third check of the
:01:01. > :01:06.day. She has had her lead in role did quite considerably between the
:01:07. > :01:11.two time checks. It shows that the different RA is suiting different
:01:12. > :01:23.riders. She is still, in my opinion, in medal position -- array. A chance
:01:24. > :01:41.for Katrin Garfoot to catch her breath. She won the women's Road
:01:42. > :01:58.series in Australia next year. Here come Bowditch for Guernsey.
:01:59. > :02:05.series in Australia next year. Here comes. We are back out on the course
:02:06. > :02:07.with Shara Gillow. She had slipped out of the medal positions at the
:02:08. > :02:16.last time check going into fifth position. I am not sure she
:02:17. > :02:21.on the pace, but she is in the hunt. Ten seconds either way would see you
:02:22. > :02:24.on the pace, but she is in the hunt. in or out of the medals and you
:02:25. > :02:30.could not change that. We have seen huge changes except for Emma Pooley
:02:31. > :02:45.and Linda Villumsen who have been tied together at one second. Emma
:02:46. > :02:49.Pooley edging it so far. Still tapping out a nice rhythm and
:02:50. > :02:57.looking as fresh and strong as she did in the early kilometres. If
:02:58. > :03:02.anyone knows how to measure their effort, it is Emma Pooley, she is
:03:03. > :03:07.very experienced. It has been a difficult day for Joanna Rowsell.
:03:08. > :03:10.She was a star turn on the track. difficult day for Joanna Rowsell.
:03:11. > :03:14.She set a new Commonwealth Games difficult day for Joanna Rowsell.
:03:15. > :03:19.record in qualifying. Her ride today is almost done. It will not come
:03:20. > :03:30.close to yielding another medal. is almost done. It will not come
:03:31. > :03:38.set. She is not using all the road at all. She is not a fan of these
:03:39. > :03:50.conditions. She already has a gold medal. Superb riding on the track
:03:51. > :03:57.from Joanna Rowsell. The final few metres of effort for her up towards
:03:58. > :04:02.the line. Good enough for sixth place so far. There was a little
:04:03. > :04:13.hint this morning that she was not feeling 100%. Emma Pooley has gone
:04:14. > :04:18.through that third and final check. She is ahead of Katie Archibald and
:04:19. > :04:25.we are just waiting for Linda Villumsen. It will be between these
:04:26. > :04:29.two. They cannot be far away from that final time check.
:04:30. > :04:39.two. They cannot be far away from that final Six seconds in it for the
:04:40. > :04:48.podium position. Emma Pooley has at last broken the deadlock. She is
:04:49. > :04:51.ahead of Linda Villumsen. There is the confirmation of the
:04:52. > :05:04.leaderboard. England are in the gold medal position. Linda Villumsen,
:05:05. > :05:09.silver medallist before. Can she powered her way on a mostly downhill
:05:10. > :05:16.section back into the centre of Glasgow. This makes me wonder if
:05:17. > :05:21.this is still in the balance. Linda Villumsen should have the edge in
:05:22. > :05:30.this closing section when they should be reaching speeds of over 70
:05:31. > :05:36.kilometres per hour. There is Linda Villumsen, she is powering away. You
:05:37. > :05:40.have to measure your Villumsen, she is powering away. You
:05:41. > :05:46.carefully over the course. It is short, but it is testing. It is
:05:47. > :05:56.tempting to back off the gas on the descent, but you need enough gears
:05:57. > :06:14.to use every inch of Road. A huge speed variation on this circuit --
:06:15. > :06:17.Road. -- road. The last major competition of her career, Emma
:06:18. > :06:22.Pooley, it would be great to get the gold medal. She was nervous this
:06:23. > :06:26.morning, but she has brushed those aside and her form is coming
:06:27. > :06:32.through. You mentioned in the Olympic Games, where it was an up
:06:33. > :06:38.and down course, Emma Pooley will know she will fare well on the
:06:39. > :06:43.climb, she gained time on nearly everyone on the downhill part of the
:06:44. > :06:45.course, however. When she is up for it, there is no type of Touraine
:06:46. > :07:02.that can stop her. She just it, there is no type of Touraine
:07:03. > :07:15.Alexandra Park -- Touraine. That terrain. -- terrain. There is Katie
:07:16. > :07:21.Archibald. It will all come down to the final run back to the line. Emma
:07:22. > :07:25.Pooley making her way back into the city. She is heading back into the
:07:26. > :07:38.East End. Is this going to be a ride city. She is heading back into the
:07:39. > :07:47.she be pipped at the post by Linda Villumsen? How much does she have
:07:48. > :08:05.left? You can see the next rider on the road. Cannot quite make out who
:08:06. > :08:09.it is. It could be Katie Archibald. A slight wobble from Katie
:08:10. > :08:16.Archibald, but she is pushing it to the limit, she knows she has a
:08:17. > :08:21.Commonwealth medal in her grasp. A couple of minutes to go. She will
:08:22. > :08:29.need to get every last ounce of energy. She will need to be careful
:08:30. > :08:35.on that right hander. That is where it experience will come into play.
:08:36. > :08:39.We are picking her up on our camera. 45 seconds of riding to go.
:08:40. > :08:45.We are picking her up on our She will need to go pretty quickly
:08:46. > :08:53.now, because the time from Katrin Garfoot is the one she has to beat.
:08:54. > :09:00.The road surface is a bit dry in places and very wet in parts. There
:09:01. > :09:13.is the tight right-hander. She used every inch of Road. Did well to
:09:14. > :09:19.avoid those crash barriers -- road. This is so important, those final
:09:20. > :09:27.few corners, absolutely critical. She has done well so far. It is to
:09:28. > :09:36.key and slippery. I think this is where she has got 45 seconds to do
:09:37. > :09:44.-- tricky. Here comes Katie Archibald. Yet another very strong
:09:45. > :09:50.ride to add to the collection. Will it be enough for her to edge into
:09:51. > :09:59.the lead and put herself in contention for a medal. Here comes
:10:00. > :10:10.in as a Smith to the finish. -- Elinor Barker. No medal today, but
:10:11. > :10:20.she is the third quickest on the leaderboard. She could find yourself
:10:21. > :10:26.in the top five. She has lost time here in the closing section of this
:10:27. > :10:31.time trial and Katie Archibald comes up the finishing straight, slower
:10:32. > :10:46.than Katrin Garfoot. Last few metres of efforts, she is over the line.
:10:47. > :10:54.For so long, she was ahead of Katrin Garfoot. I think it was that middle
:10:55. > :11:00.section, she went so hard. Now, we are back with Emma Pooley and this
:11:01. > :11:09.is the match for the gold medal. The raise is really on as Emma Pooley

:11:21. > :11:31.Green. Emma Pooley is flying here. 40 minutes on the clock, she is
:11:32. > :11:39.driving away here. She cannot make a single mistake. I think she has done
:11:40. > :11:44.well. There is Linda Villumsen. A slight wobble there. It has been
:11:45. > :11:52.several minutes since we have had a time check on both of them. She is

:12:33. > :12:39.keeping a low gear, that is so important to accelerate. That
:12:40. > :12:44.acceleration is important and will give her confidence to keep the
:12:45. > :12:52.speed up. She still looks as fresh as when she started.
:12:53. > :12:56.speed up. She still looks as fresh down into the park. This has been a
:12:57. > :12:58.brilliant ride down into the park. This has been a
:12:59. > :13:00.Right from the down into the park. This has been a
:13:01. > :13:19.all the way through. She should be about 42, 43. We see the curved
:13:20. > :13:26.sections that can cause all the trouble. Emma Pooley racing to the
:13:27. > :13:31.finish. This is the last time we will see her racing in a time trial
:13:32. > :13:37.in a World Championship. The current British national champion, is she
:13:38. > :13:45.about to become the Commonwealth champion? Superb riding from Emma
:13:46. > :13:52.Pooley. Only Linda Villumsen can challenge her time. Here she is, she
:13:53. > :14:01.has to be technically perfect in this last section. It was about 45
:14:02. > :14:07.seconds from here. She is two or three seconds behind Emma Pooley.
:14:08. > :14:14.What a finish this will be and she is going around the final corner.
:14:15. > :14:20.250 metres to go and what a finish. So close for Linda Villumsen. Second
:14:21. > :14:25.in the World Championship three times. A silver medallist in Delhi,
:14:26. > :14:30.will she be pipped at the post again? Here she comes, up towards
:14:31. > :14:36.the line and I think Linda again? Here she comes, up towards
:14:37. > :14:42.will do it! She dug deep in the final sections of the race and she
:14:43. > :14:48.claims the gold medal. Emma Pooley is denied at the end of the race
:14:49. > :14:54.will stop only six seconds between the top two. We said that downhill
:14:55. > :15:00.section would favour Linda Villumsen. We were hoping that Emma
:15:01. > :15:05.Pooley would emulate her performance in Beijing when she descended so
:15:06. > :15:09.well. You cannot deny your physiology, but when it is fast, out
:15:10. > :15:21.and out power will win the day. There we are, confirmation of the
:15:22. > :15:50.result. Katie Archibald has raced in five
:15:51. > :15:51.different events here and she has finished in the top five in all of
:15:52. > :16:11.them. There is the winner, Linda
:16:12. > :16:16.Villumsen. She kept in touch on the upward sections of the course, with
:16:17. > :16:19.the technical middle section, and then was able to power to victory in
:16:20. > :16:47.the closing kilometres. She saved the best of her effort
:16:48. > :16:52.until the very last moment and finally able to taste victory in a
:16:53. > :16:57.major Championship, having been so close, so many times. One or two
:16:58. > :17:04.riders finding it tough out there on the course. I think that is Leah
:17:05. > :17:15.Kirchmann of Canada. Yes, it is. She clearly had a major problem in the
:17:16. > :17:20.closing stages. Linda Villumsen, born in Denmark. She actually
:17:21. > :17:27.competed for Denmark in the Olympics in Beijing in 2008, before changing
:17:28. > :17:34.citizenship to New Zealand. She can now prepare for the medal ceremony,
:17:35. > :17:49.during which she will, for a change, be able to stand on the top spot.
:17:50. > :18:02.A chance for a quick rubdown, Emma Pooley out in front for so long,
:18:03. > :18:24.just could not quite hang on as they raced down into Glasgow.
:18:25. > :18:29.Emma Pooley, just pipped by Linda Villumsen at the end. We can now
:18:30. > :18:37.join Jonathan over near the finishing line. I thought it was the
:18:38. > :18:44.medal ceremony starting but it was a bit soon for that. We have got a
:18:45. > :18:48.bagpiper here. As you can expect, there is a great atmosphere here at
:18:49. > :18:52.the finishing line. It reminds you of the atmosphere that you had in
:18:53. > :18:58.Z?rich where people were banging the boards. Slight disappointment for
:18:59. > :19:02.Emma Pooley. It looked like Katie Archibald for Scotland might get a
:19:03. > :19:07.medal but she slipped out in the closing stages. She spoke to Jill
:19:08. > :19:13.Douglas. You really attacked the middle section but pushed out at the
:19:14. > :19:17.end by the Australian. I really liked the country lanes part. I
:19:18. > :19:24.think I left it too much until the end. I think it is a mental game, I
:19:25. > :19:30.cannot seem to kill myself in the flats. I knew I was going to
:19:31. > :19:36.struggle with the second half. A members support all at the way
:19:37. > :19:42.around from the crowd in Glasgow. You could do a map of the busy
:19:43. > :19:50.spots. It is something to work on, I suppose. Thank you very much. The
:19:51. > :19:59.sun is out now but it was wet at the start and we thought that might not
:20:00. > :20:04.suit Jo Rowsell of England. She finished down in 30th place and she
:20:05. > :20:08.caught up with Jill as well. A medallist on the track, but out here
:20:09. > :20:13.on the time trial, this was not an event you were training for but can
:20:14. > :20:19.you give us an idea of how it was out there? There was a tail wind
:20:20. > :20:24.uphill and a headwind back. It is slightly less windy today, which is
:20:25. > :20:29.good. But the rain, it poured down at the start. It stopped raining and
:20:30. > :20:32.then started raining out again on the course. The conditions were
:20:33. > :20:38.changeable but I gave it my best, so there you go. It does make it
:20:39. > :20:41.difficult when you are riding on different surfaces in different
:20:42. > :20:47.conditions. It was difficult to practice on the court yesterday.
:20:48. > :20:51.They closed the road for two hours. It was not quite what we imagined.
:20:52. > :20:56.But we got to do a bit of practice. This is not the course I won the
:20:57. > :20:58.nationals on last year but like I said, I came here to get a gold
:20:59. > :21:04.medal, said, I came here to get a gold
:21:05. > :21:06.prefer to win one gold but Tony-macro instead of two bronzes.
:21:07. > :21:09.prefer to win one gold but It is always good to get the
:21:10. > :21:16.opportunity to do an international time trial. The crowd have been good
:21:17. > :21:24.and it has been supporting -- it has been good supporting Emma. Just
:21:25. > :21:28.behind me you have got where the athletes sit, the three thrones,
:21:29. > :21:32.almost. They wait their depending on what the position is when they
:21:33. > :21:34.finish. There is a Linda Villumsen finally on the podium after
:21:35. > :21:39.finish. There is a Linda Villumsen finally on getting a silver medal in
:21:40. > :21:48.Delhi two years ago. Emma Pooley is next to her. We will hear from her
:21:49. > :21:55.in a few minutes. For now, I will hand you back to Simon in the
:21:56. > :21:58.commentary box. The celebratory phone calls start
:21:59. > :22:01.already for Linda Villumsen as she prepares for the medal ceremony. As
:22:02. > :22:07.we have been saying throughout the broadcast, she has been there or
:22:08. > :22:13.thereabouts for so long. Clearly a very experienced rider. She is 29
:22:14. > :22:17.years of age now. She bases her self in Auckland. The silver medallist in
:22:18. > :22:24.Delhi four years ago. She rode the road racing Delhi as well. She has
:22:25. > :22:28.been so close with silver medals and bronze medals in the world
:22:29. > :22:33.Championships and just missed out on Olympic medals as well. She was
:22:34. > :22:42.fourth in London in 2012, in the road time trial and fifth in the
:22:43. > :22:47.road race as well. The course, ultimately playing into her hands,
:22:48. > :22:49.in the sense that the uphill bit or most of the uphill bit was in the
:22:50. > :22:53.first section, it was technical in most of the uphill bit was in the
:22:54. > :22:58.the centre, and then more downhill in the closing stages, which I think
:22:59. > :22:59.possibly favoured her, having stayed almost level with Emma Pooley all
:23:00. > :23:07.the way through. almost level with Emma Pooley all
:23:08. > :23:14.ride from a pulley down the left-hand side of your picture. --
:23:15. > :23:25.what an excellent ride from Emma Pooley. A few days away from
:23:26. > :23:29.retiring from international cycling. I think we will be hearing more from
:23:30. > :23:35.her as a triathlete, maybe a marathon runner as well. I think are
:23:36. > :23:45.sporting endeavours are far from over. There is the race on Sunday,
:23:46. > :23:53.the course is entirely in the city centre. They are still making their
:23:54. > :24:01.final preparations for the podium and I now believe Chris has found
:24:02. > :24:07.his way to join Jonathan. Yes, thanks, Simon. Chris, a great race.
:24:08. > :24:12.Between the two that you stayed at the start. The wrong result. The
:24:13. > :24:16.wrong result from an English point of view. Jelena there were three
:24:17. > :24:21.sections of the course, the climbing, technical section and a
:24:22. > :24:24.fast downhill. We knew if Emma pulley had an Achilles heel, it
:24:25. > :24:28.would be the final run into town where she body mass works against
:24:29. > :24:30.her. It is all about power there. She had built up a buffer of eight
:24:31. > :24:34.seconds and we thought it She had built up a buffer of eight
:24:35. > :24:43.enough but Linda Villumsen is such a great competitor. Both of them
:24:44. > :24:55.technically well matched. It just went Linda Villumsen's way. She is a
:24:56. > :25:00.worthy winner. The strips on the final bend, I thought might catch
:25:01. > :25:04.more people out but they did not. Very experienced riders here.
:25:05. > :25:10.Everybody got round well. It came down to who could measure the
:25:11. > :25:17.effort. Experience is a big factor. One of the things you see on the big
:25:18. > :25:24.ground tour races is race radio. Do the cyclists have that? Do they know
:25:25. > :25:28.what the timings are? Some choose to take it that some prefer to be left
:25:29. > :25:33.alone. For me, I preferred information, I wanted to know where
:25:34. > :25:37.I stood. If it was going to be really close, I think that could
:25:38. > :25:42.make the difference. Was there something else Emma could have done,
:25:43. > :25:48.built up a bigger buffer early on to mitigate what happened in the
:25:49. > :25:52.closing stages? No, she did everything she could. She was in
:25:53. > :25:56.great shape, three wins in the tour of Italy. There was nothing she
:25:57. > :26:01.could do. It would be lovely to see her get a gold medal at her last
:26:02. > :26:05.meet in her career. Katie Archbold did not get a medal in the end but
:26:06. > :26:12.she was fighting all the way through. It was dramatic. Emma
:26:13. > :26:15.Pooley is now with Jill. Your last major competition in a
:26:16. > :26:21.time trial. You pushed hard all the way round there and it was so close.
:26:22. > :26:23.It was close but I am really happy to be on the podium. When you come
:26:24. > :26:27.through and you have got the quickest time and the one person
:26:28. > :26:33.behind you goes quicker, it is a little disappointing but I do not
:26:34. > :26:36.think I could do better. It is a great course, it is tough and in the
:26:37. > :26:44.wet as well it is challenging on the corners. You lose a few seconds here
:26:45. > :26:48.and there and it adds up. That is the way it is. We have seen you win
:26:49. > :26:52.some big time trials, the silver medal you took in the Olympics as
:26:53. > :26:59.well, but what are the emotions now, knowing you have just put in your
:27:00. > :27:02.last major competitive time trial? I am really happy. I am really
:27:03. > :27:05.grateful to have had the opportunity. I am especially
:27:06. > :27:10.grateful to my best friend back home who built my bike for me and the
:27:11. > :27:14.British cycling mechanics have been fantastic. I mostly grateful to all
:27:15. > :27:17.the people who have supported me. I guess I have been racing properly
:27:18. > :27:22.for seven or eight years and there have been a lot of people over that
:27:23. > :27:26.time who have helped me, not necessarily paid staff, volunteers,
:27:27. > :27:30.but it is the kind of opportunity not everyone gets. Looking back, I
:27:31. > :27:35.am grateful so to get a medal today, it is nice to top that. You have
:27:36. > :27:42.done us proud over the years and you got a wonderful reception from the
:27:43. > :27:45.crowd. Yes, they are cheering and especially when they are not waving
:27:46. > :27:50.England flags and their cheering, that is nice. I hope we gave them
:27:51. > :27:54.something good to watch. There is still the road race to come. You are
:27:55. > :28:05.riding in support of Luciano 's dead. We do not know what the tactic
:28:06. > :28:10.is -- Lizzie Armistead. We do not know what will happen. I will let
:28:11. > :28:17.you go and collect your medal. Thanks, Jill, thanks, everyone. That
:28:18. > :28:24.reflects what we were saying that she could not do any more. I thought
:28:25. > :28:29.it might be too much of a hilly course. She tried to force it to
:28:30. > :28:34.happen. She really worked hard but there was nothing else she could do.
:28:35. > :28:38.She knows it as well. I don't know if it makes it an easier or a more
:28:39. > :28:45.difficult pill to swallow that that is all she had today. The plan is
:28:46. > :28:50.for her to ride the road race on Sunday but to ride for Lizzie
:28:51. > :28:56.Armistead. She has essentially raced her last competitive race for gold
:28:57. > :29:01.as a cyclist. We do not know what sport she will do next. She seems to
:29:02. > :29:03.be successful in all of them. But on Sunday, if she is riding for
:29:04. > :29:10.Lizzie, she will be there or thereabouts. As we saw on Sunday,
:29:11. > :29:14.you can have a crush and then team orders change. She is thereof
:29:15. > :29:19.thereabouts. She could still walk away with a medal. It was silver for
:29:20. > :29:25.Emma Pooley, gold for Linda Villumsen.
:29:26. > :29:28.She is with Jill now. There was so little in that race. Where you are
:29:29. > :29:36.conscious of how close that race was? I preferred to ride without
:29:37. > :29:42.time or speed or anything, just as fast as I can. This has not been the
:29:43. > :29:47.ideal year for you but to come and finish on the top step of that
:29:48. > :29:52.podium, what does it mean? I cannot describe it. Every year I think
:29:53. > :29:58.maybe I can pull off the world Championships or I can do the
:29:59. > :30:04.Olympics or Commonwealth Games, but I am nearly there but always missing
:30:05. > :30:12.something. But it has now been amazing. Congratulations. Thank you.
:30:13. > :30:18.OK, that wraps up the women's race. We will see the medal ceremony later
:30:19. > :30:24.on. We have an hour or so before the men start. A big moment for David
:30:25. > :30:29.Miller. He is the defending champion in his last year as a professional
:30:30. > :30:38.cyclist. He has had a quiet year results wise. He did not get
:30:39. > :30:42.selected for the Tour de France. Bitterly disappointed but we do not
:30:43. > :30:45.know where he is at. What we do know is he is highly motivated, it is a
:30:46. > :31:02.good course. He likes technical. That might carry him through. He is
:31:03. > :31:07.the person to beat. I think Alex it is more of up your time trial. We do
:31:08. > :31:12.not know where he is at -- a pure is more of up your time trial. We do
:31:13. > :31:23.not know where he is time trial. The big unknowns are the likes of
:31:24. > :31:32.Thomas. We do not know how he is out of the Tour de France it was
:31:33. > :31:43.difficult to. It is a funny race. of the Tour de France it was
:31:44. > :31:46.Your body can adapt. Your recovery gets better and sometimes on the
:31:47. > :31:56.last day, you think you could do it tomorrow. There are lots of unknowns
:31:57. > :32:02.about who will perform well. A lot of that will come down to sheer
:32:03. > :32:11.motivation. Conditions are improving, the one ride that
:32:12. > :32:17.everyone is talking about is Dennis. All of the strain and is could come
:32:18. > :32:23.out on top -- Australians. All of the strain and is could come
:32:24. > :32:25.out on top Dennis is the man on form. All of them are technically
:32:26. > :32:30.great bike riders. form. All of them are technically
:32:31. > :32:39.great bike We will see the men's race. For the moment, it is back to
:32:40. > :32:51.full -- is back to the studio. We showed you some of the bowls at
:32:52. > :33:00.Kelvingrove earlier. Scotland put We showed you some of the bowls at
:33:01. > :33:05.themselves in a very strong position. England pulled themselves
:33:06. > :34:05.back Medium length Jack. -- jack. Good
:34:06. > :34:40.start. 20 six. -- Bob Love. A great opening bowl. This is looking not
:34:41. > :35:09.too far away. Very good. Good game. Really good. -- again. That is a
:35:10. > :35:19.good way to bowl, could be a second shot. The target here for Scotland
:35:20. > :35:25.is to try and ensure they do not lose any more than one shot. If it
:35:26. > :35:31.is two shots it will be a tight end and we will play an extra end to
:35:32. > :35:33.decide the winner. Ideally, they will be looking to try and get the
:35:34. > :36:18.shot. That is under. That is a bowl that
:36:19. > :36:34.can be punched in. APPLAUSE. He got the wrong side of
:36:35. > :36:41.it! He was pumping it on. He had the gap. Here he is a game, just getting
:36:42. > :36:51.on to that. It would gap. Here he is a game, just getting
:36:52. > :36:56.for the right white. Just a little dip at the end. A really good
:36:57. > :37:37.effort. Two to England at the moment. That is a tight end.
:37:38. > :37:42.Brown, does he put another bowl in? That is why he is having a little
:37:43. > :37:52.discussion. If they put another bowl in, it creates a target. Whether
:37:53. > :38:02.they want to block their head, leave it to the last one... -- the head
:38:03. > :38:23.stop --. It has to be down to forehand
:38:24. > :38:36.surely, the backhand is full of danger. At least in the forehand,
:38:37. > :38:44.you are coming into your own bowl. A decent line with this. He has got a
:38:45. > :38:50.good line. If he had edged off that, he would have been lying
:38:51. > :39:01.three. Kevin Wallace will be on the backhand. He can afford to take one
:39:02. > :39:05.of the England bowls out. Two shots sitting very nicely at the moment.
:39:06. > :39:13.The red bowl in front and the red bowl to the side. This is the one
:39:14. > :39:18.you want to do it with. Trying to take a bowl out with this one so you
:39:19. > :39:27.do not have to play your last. He has got one. It stopped on his own
:39:28. > :39:32.bowl. That was unlucky. I think the Scottish team thought that bowl was
:39:33. > :39:39.being pushed out. They are playing well. He came through on his own, he
:39:40. > :39:45.has the second shot. Pumped it through, ran through, second shot,
:39:46. > :39:52.now it has left Paul Brown in a situation of trying to reach this.
:39:53. > :39:59.He is on a decent line and has a chance. What a bowl! Brilliant! No
:40:00. > :40:10.hesitation. Got down, played the shot. He could not have played it
:40:11. > :40:19.any better. That is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. No discussion,
:40:20. > :40:24.get down, do the job. Now, we are in a tied match at the moment. I do not
:40:25. > :40:30.think there is anything other than a tied match at the moment. I do not
:40:31. > :40:36.Kevin to play into this. He has to be careful. One bowl in behind. If
:40:37. > :40:44.he turns it a little, moves the jacks back, it could be three. He is
:40:45. > :40:57.discussing what wait to play. He will see what happens with the pace.
:40:58. > :41:04.-- weight. That is what he is looking at, even to chop off his own
:41:05. > :41:27.is good, try and squeeze the bowl under the jack. Looks like he has
:41:28. > :41:39.good position in behind it. There is danger. There is one below the blue
:41:40. > :41:44.bowl. This is a danger if he plays with a little bit of weight he could
:41:45. > :41:53.move the jack and lose the medal on this end. It is tense, no doubt
:41:54. > :41:58.about that. That is not particularly easy, because once you put weight
:41:59. > :42:04.on, you have a tendency to hold off and he does not want to give another
:42:05. > :42:20.shot away. It has been a good game, a really good game, good quality. It
:42:21. > :42:25.is on its way. It is outside. Well, that is not
:42:26. > :42:32.is on its way. It is outside. Well, difference. Two shots, tight end. We
:42:33. > :42:48.will be into a deciding end for the bronze medal. It does not get closer
:42:49. > :42:54.than this. That was interesting. England had won the toss and decided
:42:55. > :43:01.to give it away to Scotland. It was probably a wise move. Scotland going
:43:02. > :43:08.for the long jack length again. They are relying very well on this
:43:09. > :43:09.direction. Paul Brown played a weighted ball and picked up the
:43:10. > :43:28.jack. Looking good, it needs to keep
:43:29. > :44:05.going. That is falling short as well. At
:44:06. > :44:12.this length, short bowl start to become a problem. Trying to get
:44:13. > :44:22.around them. -- short bowls. An adjustment has to be made.
:44:23. > :44:26.Trying to put a little bit more weight on it. Missing it would have
:44:27. > :44:59.been better. Still a long way down! If they can find the way around the
:45:00. > :45:19.front ones. That is a great shot. Bob Love. It will be hard to
:45:20. > :45:25.front ones. That is a great shot. this. Just sitting down in front of
:45:26. > :45:31.the jack. This sort of ball can win you a medal.
:45:32. > :46:16.Really good sportsmanship going on out there. But to be fair, missing
:46:17. > :46:21.that bowl, the jack, was in the ditch. He was running after it. At
:46:22. > :46:38.least, the game is still alive for England.
:46:39. > :47:09.It is a good effort. Yes, anything back there is useful. We all know
:47:10. > :47:14.Paul Brown is a very good way to play. Kevin Wallace might think it
:47:15. > :47:53.is time to protect this. It will be a little short but not in
:47:54. > :48:00.the line. It will not affect the next shot. The weight would not have
:48:01. > :48:08.been an issue for him. He really wanted to be on the line. That is
:48:09. > :48:26.very much an open jack for Paul Brown.
:48:27. > :48:38.More than competent at this shot. We have seen it before.
:48:39. > :48:51.They are looking at it. He is close. He has got the back bowl of. There
:48:52. > :48:57.is another bowl lurking around back there. We will have to find out.
:48:58. > :49:08.Here it is again. Played it perfectly. More importantly for him,
:49:09. > :49:12.he pushed the ball through. You see where the jack goes. Without pushing
:49:13. > :49:30.that bowl through, it could have been against him.
:49:31. > :49:48.It just dropped in. It is England who will take the bronze medal. What
:49:49. > :49:59.a fantastic game. STUDIO: Adriatic end to that lawn
:50:00. > :50:03.bowls event at Kelvingrove. Rishi has been catching up with the
:50:04. > :50:08.winners of the bronze medal. I am joined by the guys who have got the
:50:09. > :50:17.bronze. First of all, Paul, congratulations. What a fabulous
:50:18. > :50:21.finish. Guess, it was a bit of a hectic couple of last ends. But we
:50:22. > :50:28.pulled three good ends out of that to get to the tie-break and at the
:50:29. > :50:34.end as well. I'm still coming down from it. It was fantastic.
:50:35. > :50:38.Absolutely unbelievable. Fantastic indeed. And Bob, when I mentioned on
:50:39. > :50:42.air you are man who bowls with his feet, it got quite a reaction from
:50:43. > :50:47.some people saying, they just want to see this and see how amazing it
:50:48. > :50:52.was. Despite all that, you have got a medal here, despite the notoriety
:50:53. > :50:57.of that. It is not about the disability, it is about the bowling,
:50:58. > :51:11.that is what counts here. I am over the moon. What a way to finish it
:51:12. > :51:13.off, brilliant. It was a fabulous finish. David, you have had
:51:14. > :51:15.experience of these games before. You know how important it is to keep
:51:16. > :51:20.your nerve and keep battling away until the end. When they got that
:51:21. > :51:26.nasty little wick to get the holding shot, I thought, oh no. I was
:51:27. > :51:32.unlucky in Manchester to miss out on a medal but this makes up for it. I
:51:33. > :51:36.am very pleased. This is your first Commonwealth Games and your first
:51:37. > :51:40.games of this magnitude and to produce a performance like that must
:51:41. > :51:44.be extremely satisfying. That must be an understatement? This is the
:51:45. > :51:48.complete highlight of my career so far. To stand on the green in the
:51:49. > :52:06.Commonwealth Games and bowl like that, I will not forget that for a
:52:07. > :52:09.long time. I think it will be with me for a long time in the future.
:52:10. > :52:11.Bob and David, have you got any plans for celebrations tonight? We
:52:12. > :52:16.might have one or two drinks! Guys, it has been a pleasure watching you.
:52:17. > :52:20.Enjoy the celebrations. Thank you. Let's take you back to Glasgow Green
:52:21. > :52:26.for a moment because the medal ceremony for the women's time trial
:52:27. > :52:37.has just been taking place so it is over to Simon Brotherton.
:52:38. > :52:48.There is a sizeable crowd here at Glasgow Green. The men's time trial
:52:49. > :52:49.is coming up this afternoon. Katrin Garfoot claiming the bronze medal
:52:50. > :53:02.for Australia. She is crowning what has been an
:53:03. > :53:06.excellent year for her. She has a contract for the rest of the
:53:07. > :53:11.season. Everything has happened for her much quicker than she expected.
:53:12. > :53:24.It has ended on the podium in Glasgow.
:53:25. > :53:35.So close to victory. She led for so long. Silver in her final
:53:36. > :53:37.competitive time trial and so close to the golden goodbye. Emma Pooley,
:53:38. > :54:14.the former world champion. She will savour this. Nearly, but
:54:15. > :54:25.not quite, for so long, but now a She will savour this. Nearly, but
:54:26. > :54:30.worthy winner. At last it is gold for Linda Villumsen of New Zealand.
:54:31. > :54:34.Just outside the medals in the Olympic Games, twice silver
:54:35. > :54:42.medallist in the world Championship, three times a bronze medallist as
:54:43. > :54:48.well. And at last, the colour she really wanted.
:54:49. > :56:02.CHEERING Well, Linda Villumsen is a worthy
:56:03. > :56:05.winner but Emma Pooley has been a shining light for British cycling in
:56:06. > :56:11.recent years. We will miss her presence at events like this now she
:56:12. > :56:15.is retiring. Well, a great watch for all those
:56:16. > :56:20.events at Glasgow Green. They went right out of the city and back to
:56:21. > :56:26.finish there. We have more road cycling on Sunday. It has been a
:56:27. > :56:34.very varied and busy morning of sport. Here is what happened.
:56:35. > :56:43.Linda Villumsen mastered tricky conditions on the roads of Glasgow
:56:44. > :56:48.to take gold. England's Emma Pooley retires from cycling after these
:56:49. > :56:56.games looked well set to victory but faded towards the end but had to
:56:57. > :57:03.settle for silver. England's Bob Love, David Fisher and Paul Brown
:57:04. > :57:13.won the lawn bowls para sport event with a win over Scotland.
:57:14. > :57:18.And in the table tennis, the English pair are through to the
:57:19. > :57:22.quarterfinals of the mixed doubles. And that is where I am going to
:57:23. > :57:28.leave you on BBC One. But I am not going before I leave you in the safe
:57:29. > :57:33.hands of Jason Mohammad. I feel there is more cycling. We have more
:57:34. > :57:38.cycling, squash and badminton as well. Hello, a very good afternoon
:57:39. > :57:44.to you. More gold-medal is to be won in Glasgow. As I just said to
:57:45. > :57:46.Mishal, some great sport for you this afternoon. This is what is
:57:47. > :58:03.coming up. In the men's time trial, will it be
:58:04. > :58:10.a happy ending to the Millar's tail? We will pop to the ping-pong later.
:58:11. > :58:15.Meanwhile, over at the Emirates arena, if you want to see
:58:16. > :58:24.shuttlecocks hitting speeds of 200 mph, that is the place to be.
:58:25. > :58:33.Yes, here I am at the time trial finish. A bit of a drag coming up.
:58:34. > :58:37.We have just seen Emma Pooley win a silver medal, Linda Villumsen win a
:58:38. > :58:48.gold medal. In half an hour's time, the men will be on track. A lot of
:58:49. > :58:50.fascinating storylines, not least, David Millar of Scotland. He was
:58:51. > :59:00.left out of the Tour de France. He was annoyed about that. And also
:59:01. > :59:04.Alex Dowsett of England who was also left out of the Tour de France. And
:59:05. > :59:10.Geraint Thomas of Wales did win the Tour de France. He wrote last year
:59:11. > :59:16.with a broken pelvis. The one they are all calling is from Australia.
:59:17. > :59:17.It promises to be a fascinating
