:00:50. > :00:54.Good morning. Welcome to day six of the Commonwealth Games. It has been
:00:55. > :00:58.a little bit cold the Commonwealth Games. It has been
:00:59. > :01:04.so we have been a bit Fairweather and have come into this comfortable
:01:05. > :01:07.and cosy tonight at the games are set where Clare Balding and Mark
:01:08. > :01:11.Chapman present their show normally in the evening. It is very nice to
:01:12. > :01:14.be in here. I think we in the evening. It is very nice to
:01:15. > :01:21.this the day at the games because we have so much great sport coming up
:01:22. > :01:24.for you. 31 gold medals up for grabs. Yesterday some of the 5000

:02:10. > :02:15.wonderful swim, Sophie Taylor wins gold for England.
:02:16. > :02:24.Let's take a look at situation in the medals table.
:02:25. > :02:29.Australia leading the way. And then come England. The men competing a
:02:30. > :02:32.clean sweep in the singles squash. Scotland has surpassed its record
:02:33. > :02:45.the Commonwealth Games gold medals after the 11 medals at one in
:02:46. > :02:50.Melbourne. Meanwhile, Jazz Carlin became the first Welsh woman to win
:02:51. > :02:57.gold in the Paul for 40 years and Northern Ireland claimed there first
:02:58. > :03:03.silver of the games. As we said, so much sport which means 31 goals of
:03:04. > :03:08.the grabs today and yesterday there were incredible scenes on the greens
:03:09. > :03:15.at the lawn bowls as medals were being one and if bowls is your thing
:03:16. > :03:20.you can see that online right now. And the shots of an entirely
:03:21. > :03:23.different nature, the 15 metre riflemen 's unification is underway,
:03:24. > :03:31.one of the many options available on the website. And over on BBC One
:03:32. > :03:35.right now we are previewing the morning 's action and that will
:03:36. > :03:43.start with England against Trinidad in the netball. So much sport but we
:03:44. > :03:46.have also got an awful lot coming up before lunch, it would be great if
:03:47. > :03:52.you would stay with us here. We have hockey first, it is a great match
:03:53. > :03:56.for you, massive match in fact for the England man, taking on New
:03:57. > :04:04.Zealand, who will be equally desperate to top the group. That is
:04:05. > :04:14.at Glasgow Green, we will be there shortly. Swimming comes to a close
:04:15. > :04:18.today, we have Chad le Clos and Jazz Carlin in action. And more cycling
:04:19. > :04:27.in the programme, the ladies mountain bike final. But first,
:04:28. > :04:32.let's head over to the National hockey centre at Glasgow Green where
:04:33. > :04:36.England's men are taking on New Zealand with both teams expected to

:04:41. > :04:41.progress, the winners are likely to That is an incentive if anybody
:04:42. > :04:58.needed any more. COMMENTATOR: Jackson has it, first
:04:59. > :05:03.time on his stick. Ashley Jackson, number seven for England, one of the
:05:04. > :05:11.most fluent runners of the ball. Tarrant comes through with New
:05:12. > :05:12.Zealand over halfway, Burrows onto Simon Child, the older of the
:05:13. > :05:27.brothers. The good early start from both

:08:20. > :08:26.Devon Manchester, Tarrant as well getting the deflection. That is a
:08:27. > :08:31.strong statement by the goalkeeper. Still in play, sustained pressure
:08:32. > :08:39.coming from England. Jackson has scored four drag flicks against
:08:40. > :08:44.Malaysia, a couple of days ago. He would have been in very confident
:08:45. > :08:47.form, that is a very good start for Devon Manchester. And the other

:08:53. > :08:57.between him and Pinner, he can get down to the ground easier than
:08:58. > :09:00.Penaia. A shot on the ground is maybe not the best option against a
:09:01. > :09:10.small goalie. Small is the wrong word. Agile. Agile. Martin has it

:09:51. > :09:55.You can press highly in midfield and all of a sudden the overhead goes
:09:56. > :09:56.behind and you can turn and run. It is another way of getting through
:09:57. > :10:08.the midfield area. Middleton. What a workhorse, Barry
:10:09. > :10:17.Middleton, so much to admire. Up and over it goes. Burrows that time

:14:25. > :14:30.Middleton, Jackson and Martin. Making it look easy. Great for
:14:31. > :14:37.younger people having a look at the skills required at this level.
:14:38. > :15:00.Panchia has McAleese steaming ahead of him.
:15:01. > :15:10.was hovering but decided against it. First time. Phil Burrows. Clever
:15:11. > :15:13.skill, but talking to, notice the water coming off the pitch at the
:15:14. > :15:20.moment, it slows the game down quite a lot. When the ball goes across the
:15:21. > :15:26.ground it is quite slow. England in the attacking circle, and out in

:16:00. > :16:00.goalkeeper. -- the top of the D. Inglis, trying to get a touch on to

:16:53. > :16:58.but cannot get it because Jackson is back for England. Iain Lewers,
:16:59. > :17:03.bringing the ball forward. A good hustle back by Hugo Inglis, for New
:17:04. > :17:10.Zealand. Still working hard in the midfield.
:17:11. > :17:20.A bit of a testy exchange. Child, trying to sweep past Middleton, the

:17:28. > :17:52.That is off a New Zealand stick. Dangerous.
:17:53. > :18:01.Excellent vision, across, and again, another ball, straying across the
:18:02. > :18:04.face of the goal. Another good cross by Simon Mantell. Obviously a
:18:05. > :18:08.strategy England have looked at, to crash the ball in front of the
:18:09. > :18:13.keeper but neither of the England players dived for it. I would expect
:18:14. > :18:14.to be somebody -- there to be somebody on the reverse stick,
:18:15. > :18:33.dining for it. -- diving for it. They can certainly inject pace when
:18:34. > :18:58.it gets into the attacking third. They are certainly keeping the width
:18:59. > :19:01.but they could not quite keep it in the field of play that time. New
:19:02. > :19:08.Zealand, certainly not up in the possession stakes. You would have to
:19:09. > :19:15.go 70-30, England, the amount of time on the ball. It shows that both
:19:16. > :19:18.teams have marshalled in the middle part of the pitch. They are making
:19:19. > :19:23.each other play wide balls down the line. That is the only space
:19:24. > :19:26.available. They are trying so hard to get it right on the edge, they

:19:53. > :20:14.Couzins. Simon Mantell, again, heaping
:20:15. > :20:21.pressure on the Kiwis. No, it was an excellent touch finder, right down
:20:22. > :20:26.on the line by the corner flag. New Zealand, backing off. They had the
:20:27. > :20:31.opportunity to close down but they decided to come three quarters
:20:32. > :20:37.court. They don't want England to get behind this front cord and, at
:20:38. > :20:39.all. Now, the speed of Catlin, again. He had three New Zealanders
:20:40. > :20:49.Again, the last pass is just not trying to catch up with him.
:20:50. > :20:55.Again, the last pass is just not going to stick for England at this
:20:56. > :21:05.stage. It is very tight. It is not nervy but they are very edgy. Cagey.
:21:06. > :21:09.Yes, that is a better word. It is a bit like a chess match, just playing
:21:10. > :21:16.the ball around, trying to find a weakness, probing. Edible touch
:21:17. > :21:22.forward, clever from Hilton. -- a little touch forward. Marcus Child
:21:23. > :21:31.puts it through but onto an England stick. Still has the ball. Hilton,
:21:32. > :21:35.but he runs out of room. It is difficult, there. England were
:21:36. > :21:43.presenting three defenders, and Hilton, in trying to get through,
:21:44. > :21:48.ended up going over the back line. McAleese, putting pressure on and
:21:49. > :21:52.wins the ball for New Zealand. He surges forward, and Martin is
:21:53. > :21:57.breathing down his neck. Across, and again, no one on the left flank. It

:22:44. > :22:49.Now, England down the left channels. Clever little jink. Henry Weir and
:22:50. > :23:09.Simon Mantell. Catlin is playing a key part in this
:23:10. > :23:13.game early on. A chance and a goal! No, what a wonderful save by
:23:14. > :23:21.McAleese, for New Zealand, stick tackle on Dixon. Great little move
:23:22. > :23:25.by England, Brogden linking up with Dixon, who had a quick snapshot, but
:23:26. > :23:32.McAleese just got his stick on it in time. Brave defending. It is 50-50

:24:39. > :24:40.with a ranking of number two in the Commonwealth Games, behind
:24:41. > :24:44.Australia, and New Zealand at number three. The scoreline is indicative
:24:45. > :25:02.of the closeness as well. Inglis. A drive into there, but
:25:03. > :25:21.easily mopped up by the English defence.
:25:22. > :25:30.Two of the Mauritz parents Blacksticks players, Burrows and
:25:31. > :25:34.McAleese. -- more experienced. Still little mistakes, there, and this is
:25:35. > :25:40.a game about cutting down the little errors. It is what you spoke about
:25:41. > :25:44.before, the channels. They are being stretched out wide. That shows you
:25:45. > :25:50.how tight the game is. In 22 minutes, we have had two shots on
:25:51. > :25:52.goal. Martin down the left flank. What can he find? Only the stick of
:25:53. > :26:09.the New Zealand captain, Couzins. Jackson, looking for an entry and
:26:10. > :26:29.gets a little stick check. Jackson just glides with the ball.
:26:30. > :26:37.Efficient, England, certainly, that is a word you could use. They are
:26:38. > :26:40.efficient in the opening 23 minutes of this first match between these
:26:41. > :26:46.two teams in pool B. Again, and other searching ball, pinched. Some
:26:47. > :26:54.great work and now Jackson has the ball, searching for the goal. A shot
:26:55. > :27:01.at goal and it goes wide! David Condon. A lovely little steel by
:27:02. > :27:05.Brogden, finding Jackson, who gets David Condon running across the line
:27:06. > :27:14.and he fires back to the far corner. Not far away. Not many openings for
:27:15. > :27:16.either team. England, certainly having the better of the
:27:17. > :27:20.opportunities. They have had a penalty corner. That was saved by
:27:21. > :27:24.the New Zealand keeper. They have had a couple of other shots on goal.
:27:25. > :27:33.And George Pinner, for England remains a spectator in the goal.
:27:34. > :27:40.Although certainly, you can hear him calling. Yes, having a little
:27:41. > :27:43.chunter at the umpire because he did not agree with the decision. But he
:27:44. > :27:45.was leaning against the poster minute ago, as though he was in a
:27:46. > :27:53.bar. A strategic little chess game is
:27:54. > :27:59.being played A strategic little chess game is
:28:00. > :28:00.between the two sides. England have the better of it, in terms of
:28:01. > :28:11.possession. Jackson, looking for the little,
:28:12. > :28:24.soft hands. Looking to conjure something,
:28:25. > :28:42.Middleton and Jackson. Across to the right. And the drive
:28:43. > :28:44.into the circle, but a New Zealand stick on it, and up and over
:28:45. > :29:08.halfway, into the gap. Well picked off by Arun Panchia.
:29:09. > :29:32.Some very deft skills, Arun Panchia for New Zealand. Over halfway again.
:29:33. > :29:44.Edwards, looking to edges way towards the circle. -- edge his way.
:29:45. > :29:47.Using his leg as a body shield. Neither team taking huge risks at
:29:48. > :29:50.the moment. It comes down to looking at the next phase of the tournament.
:29:51. > :29:53.It is about winning the group because this game could be the route
:29:54. > :29:57.to the final for both of these teams, or the easier route to the
:29:58. > :30:00.final. It means avoiding Australia. That is what today is about.
:30:01. > :30:12.Absolutely. Working hard, running off the ball,
:30:13. > :30:18.running hard, both teams. There is that element, you are exactly
:30:19. > :30:26.right, of just holding a little bit back. Andy Hayward, the big man,
:30:27. > :30:30.taking the ball down the flank and driving it into the circle. Again,
:30:31. > :31:04.we have seen that from New Zealand and a couple down the other end
:31:05. > :31:11.Just grabbing the stick. He pulls so hard. That stick actually hit
:31:12. > :31:25.Jackson on the way through. It could be dangerous. The circles will be
:31:26. > :31:44.both contested. Play continues, fast pass from Middleton, he keeps the
:31:45. > :32:02.ball in. Brogdon. We have seen the intensity ramp up in the last couple
:32:03. > :32:19.of minutes Child up and over. Probably lucky to escape. That was
:32:20. > :32:42.the big whistle. Under seven minutes left, the war of attrition
:32:43. > :32:46.continues. Brogdon Catlin has been clever in the opening stages,
:32:47. > :32:55.injecting himself into the midfield, creating a couple of chances.
:32:56. > :32:59.Mopping up well, New Zealand, absorbing the pressure that

:41:46. > :41:49.stepping stone. They looked really good as a team, supporting each

:41:54. > :41:56.thing about the Commonwealth Games, some people see it as a lesser
:41:57. > :42:00.tournament and for example the Olympics, with the Americans and
:42:01. > :42:04.Chinese not there but in some sports it is just as competitive, that is
:42:05. > :42:09.true in badminton. All of the leading nations are there.
:42:10. > :42:14.Especially in the later stages, the team semifinals and finals have

:42:25. > :42:28.goodness, this is incredible". The physicality and speed. The shuttle

:42:33. > :42:38.great chance for minority sports to say, hello, we are here. It is not

:43:45. > :43:48.trails built especially for the Commonwealth Games. Some beautiful

:43:55. > :44:01.features to look out for on this circuit, 5.5 km, the men go around
:44:02. > :44:05.seven times, the win in six times. Look out for double Dare, the steep
:44:06. > :44:18.descent into Castlemilk. Two options, very steep descent, the
:44:19. > :44:24.other one is Braveheart. A lot of teams think that will be decided on
:44:25. > :44:28.the steep climb of Braveheart. Some of the names on the course were
:44:29. > :44:36.named by local primary school children, who should we be looking
:44:37. > :44:40.out for this morning? If we look at the home nations, Liam Killeen won
:44:41. > :44:44.the gold medal in Melbourne, there was no mountain biking in Delhi but
:44:45. > :44:48.back in Melbourne, Liam Killeen of England won that race. He has been a
:44:49. > :44:53.late call-up to this England team but apparently is in great form. One
:44:54. > :44:57.thing that stood out in Melbourne were the kangaroos, they might been
:44:58. > :45:01.wallabies, in all honesty, crossing the course. Not sure what the
:45:02. > :45:07.wildlife here at Cathkin Braes will be. Who knows? Liam Killeen back in
:45:08. > :45:09.the team. From the Scottish perspective, the frog, Craig
:45:10. > :45:19.Ferguson, the reigning British champion. He has won on this course

:45:51. > :45:55.joining you later, Jill, now we can head to Tollcross, the last day of
:45:56. > :45:58.swimming. We have been enjoying the swimming almost as much as the

:46:03. > :46:10.Skelton and her band of prestigious and glamorous guests, Mark Foster

:46:58. > :47:04.That shows she has a bit more speed, in the sprint. This is last night.
:47:05. > :47:08.Jazz Carlin came back so strong. You would think that over 400 metres,
:47:09. > :47:15.she can take Lauren on the back 50. But Lauren has got a bit of speed, a
:47:16. > :47:21.bit in the tank. It will probably be a closer race. Hannah Miley is going
:47:22. > :47:24.for her seventh event of the accommodation, and Aimee Willmott
:47:25. > :47:27.and lots of other big names. That was a phenomenal race in terms of
:47:28. > :47:31.the way she pulled away from Lauren Boyle in the last 50 metres and took
:47:32. > :47:34.two seconds off her. It shows she was holding a reefing back. Jazz
:47:35. > :47:39.Carlin has started swimming the 800 freestyle, like the number one in

:48:34. > :48:39.amazing. This won't happen again in his lifetime. Is that why Hannah
:48:40. > :48:44.Miley is doing some events? She's not going to do them at the World

:49:03. > :49:04.is to come shortly but let's go back to the hockey, New Zealand against
:49:05. > :49:23.England. It is the second half. COMMENTATOR: The signal from the
:49:24. > :49:31.technical bench, and they are off and up and over from McAleese.
:49:32. > :49:41.Child, entering the danger area for the receiver. Dixon, and again, the

:49:55. > :50:03.And he is not afraid to admit it, either, which is great. Yes, it is a
:50:04. > :50:16.difficult rule for all of us. A good pass from Jackson into the circle.
:50:17. > :50:25.They are just debating the airball, in the air. When there are two guys
:50:26. > :50:28.underneath it, and it looked like it two guys, it is the side that puts

:50:37. > :50:52.down by a defender, it goes to the side who got there first.
:50:53. > :51:01.England, out on the right defensive flank. What can they set up now with
:51:02. > :51:07.Dixon? He is dispossessed by Burrows and he has Child with him. Can he
:51:08. > :51:11.get the shot away, Phil Burrows? A clever flick and a shot at golfer
:51:12. > :51:17.New Zealand, surely? George Penna does well in the goal. Strongly
:51:18. > :51:21.coming through onto the ball. Great bit of skill. But the best bid for
:51:22. > :51:26.me was when Phil Burrows stole the ball in midfield. -- best bit. That
:51:27. > :51:29.is the kind of mistake he will be looking to generate, the kind of
:51:30. > :51:32.pressure they will be putting on each other. Child could not get
:51:33. > :51:38.enough space to get the shot away. Exactly, this is Arun Panchia.
:51:39. > :51:44.Again, just watched over the backline by the deep England
:51:45. > :51:50.defenders. Yes, having a look at that, Phil Burrows takes people from
:51:51. > :51:54.Dixon and then it is two against two. Lovely skill by Child, but the
:51:55. > :51:59.image defenders were not giving him enough space to get the shot away
:52:00. > :52:04.and eventually George Pinner clears. Jackson nearly finding Catlin this
:52:05. > :52:07.time. They are using the overhead more than the traditional hit along
:52:08. > :52:11.the pitch so far in the opening stages of the second half. That is
:52:12. > :52:14.an indication they are finding it hard to get the ball through on the
:52:15. > :52:22.ground because the space is so tight. There is more room behind.
:52:23. > :52:25.Keeping out of the dangerous, defensive third, and opting, if they
:52:26. > :52:28.are going to make a mistake on attack, they want to be in the
:52:29. > :52:35.attacking third. Fox off-loading. Nip and tuck in this game
:52:36. > :53:06.continuing. Fox driving into the circle, hoping
:53:07. > :53:16.for a little nip onto Roper's stick but he does not get it. That is just
:53:17. > :53:18.a clearance to relieve pressure. But there are little individual duels
:53:19. > :53:23.going on all over the pitch. It seems that both teams get the ball
:53:24. > :53:27.in high and then they have a one-on-one with the defender, they
:53:28. > :53:30.get beaten, it goes down the other end and then New Zealand have a
:53:31. > :53:35.one-on-one with being dished events. It is so tight at the moment. Both

:53:40. > :54:00.for England. Blackshirt surrounding the ball. -- black shirts.
:54:01. > :54:08.Child beats the first player and off-loads a shot, speculated from
:54:09. > :54:13.Arun Panchia. -- speculative. They are finding space, and Child is
:54:14. > :54:18.doing some great work at the moment. But it is difficult to hit the ball
:54:19. > :54:25.back across your body like that. Fox expertly bringing the ball down. And
:54:26. > :54:30.equally well read by Bradley Shaw. It is such a gift to be able to
:54:31. > :54:38.distribute the ball with the right speed and accuracy, pace. Oh,
:54:39. > :54:46.penalty corner for New Zealand, their first of the match. We have
:54:47. > :54:50.not had too many forays down there. It looks like Hilton gets down the
:54:51. > :54:58.back. This is a rare error by Michael Hall. And then Iain Lewers
:54:59. > :55:02.gets it on his foot. Great work by Hilton, driving at two England
:55:03. > :55:05.defenders. He gets it on to Iain Lewers' foot. This could be the
:55:06. > :55:11.chance New Zealand have been waiting for, their first penalty corner.

:56:31. > :56:43.It demands such a keen eye, quick reflexes and reactions.

:00:02. > :00:08.the left flank. He can only see white shirts ahead of him.
:00:09. > :00:12.Burrows used to be a striker but now in the midfield and can still finish
:00:13. > :00:24.and go through. Edwards does well to keep
:00:25. > :00:48.possession. He has got two England defenders around him.
:00:49. > :00:54.in the second half will stop Jackson trying to weave his magic. The tempo
:00:55. > :00:56.has just gone up a notch. Beginning to start to attack a little bit
:00:57. > :01:36.more. On the break out. Great ball through. Good movement at
:01:37. > :01:47.the moment by New Zealand, rotating round out the back. Space is being
:01:48. > :01:54.made and then when it is filled and they move across. Great ball into
:01:55. > :02:08.the New Zealand's defence, still alive in the circle for them.
:02:09. > :02:28.Roper. Martin. Snapshot into the circle. Out by Burroughs onto Marcus

:02:46. > :02:47.the younger brother, Marcus. Phil Burrows, just on the line it is,
:02:48. > :03:12.straight in. Long corner. Couzins, urgency from the team
:03:13. > :03:16.wearing black. That will be dangerous. Interesting looking at
:03:17. > :03:29.the amount of rotation the teams utilise, after a couple of days, by
:03:30. > :03:37.comparison Canada 229 rotations, almost twice as many. I guess

:03:48. > :03:54.they are using the rotations regularly. New Zealand expending a
:03:55. > :03:59.lot of energy. Putting England under pressure, they have kept them pretty
:04:00. > :04:10.quiet in the last ten minutes or so. 21 minutes left in the match.
:04:11. > :04:18.Jackson keen just to make a bit of territorial advantage.
:04:19. > :04:34.Roper again. New Zealand now have got to macro shots in the second

:04:40. > :04:52.incursions in each other's 25 that does not get recorded on those
:04:53. > :05:05.stats. They have been so patient. England. Michael Hoare. The crowd
:05:06. > :05:13.getting behind their team, Gleghorn fires it across. It was not on
:05:14. > :05:18.target. Quite a nice little move. Rob a blue would have been better to
:05:19. > :05:26.play that across the face of goal. Brogdon waiting for the cross. Not
:05:27. > :05:36.always the best option. You cannot blame them for wanting to do
:05:37. > :05:49.something different. The good teams are the team that get something when

:06:08. > :06:18.New Zealand asking for a stroke, that the player has been pushed.
:06:19. > :06:26.This is a big decision. Was he pushed? There looked like an arm in

:06:49. > :06:53.momentum already. We do not have to make the decision, thankfully. The
:06:54. > :07:00.video referral. It looks pretty like a push their, but are you confident
:07:01. > :07:07.enough as an umpire watching this to say, penalty stroke? It is a big
:07:08. > :07:12.call in the context of the match. Are you prepared to take that risk
:07:13. > :07:22.upstairs? The New Zealanders firmly believe it. The umpires taking a
:07:23. > :07:26.long look at this. Not sure. But you have to get it right. The average
:07:27. > :07:31.time in the men's game from when they refer to getting the decision
:07:32. > :07:35.coming back is 90 seconds. A little longer in the women's. Barry
:07:36. > :07:47.Middleton already giving his version. They are watching it on the
:07:48. > :07:58.screen as well. Peter, I have the decision. There is a push, by the
:07:59. > :08:03.defender. Therefore, penalty stroke. Just confirming that, there is a
:08:04. > :08:12.push by the defender? Yes. Penalty stroke. That is a big shout. Very

:09:53. > :10:09.this match. Good reflexes. The goal-scorer having a rest. Very
:10:10. > :10:14.coolly done. This should make it interesting, it means that England
:10:15. > :10:29.have two come out and really play hard. Bradshaw. 17 minutes left in

:12:44. > :12:49.regularly. New Zealand stepped up a little bit, they are looking much
:12:50. > :12:54.more confident now. The shape of the team, stopping England getting the

:15:22. > :15:24.Andy Hayward to take the lead. England's Tempo does not look very
:15:25. > :15:28.high. They need to inject some pace into the pitch, free hits, get

:17:32. > :17:35.The goal-scorer, Dixon, has got to be pleased with that. It was a
:17:36. > :17:41.lethal finish, exactly what it had to be. Absolutely. So,
:17:42. > :17:45.lethal finish, exactly what it had square one! LAUGHTER
:17:46. > :17:52.Ten and a half minutes left in the match. Lovely skill down the back by
:17:53. > :17:56.Roper. Dixon pummelling it into the roof of the net. He really got hold
:17:57. > :18:27.of it and then some. When you look at these

:19:05. > :19:09.It comes off an English stick. Back to the table, a draw in this match
:19:10. > :19:09.would leave England leading the group
:19:10. > :19:15.would leave England leading the difference. It then comes down to
:19:16. > :19:21.goals scored, winning the last game. It probably favours England
:19:22. > :19:27.slightly. Indeed it does and a big collision between Andy Hayward... He
:19:28. > :19:34.might get a card. Yes, a card for Andy Hayward. He will get two
:19:35. > :19:39.minutes on the chair. I think he is lucky to get a green and not a

:20:37. > :20:52.England. Martin, this time, and Shaw had to
:20:53. > :20:58.get past three of them. And England on the surge again! Manchester makes
:20:59. > :21:06.another save but England still have the ball. The crowd, urging them
:21:07. > :21:11.on. Dixon, the magic man. As the sun bursts through and shines out onto
:21:12. > :21:17.the pitch. England are making all the attacking play right now. New
:21:18. > :21:23.Zealand get a chance. Great pressure all round by England but the New

:21:28. > :21:33.a dangerous area, and looking for the dive. But Simon Mantell could
:21:34. > :21:40.not get on it and then more pressure by the England forwards. Again, a
:21:41. > :21:46.lovely little trick, and it just goes across the face. Manchester cut
:21:47. > :21:50.down the angle. And we need a time-out because somebody is down
:21:51. > :21:55.for New Zealand. A lot of work going in, tired legs all round but what a

:23:11. > :23:38.full stretch. And guess who had the Jackson off-loads. Giving it to the
:23:39. > :23:45.young player, and they have got a free shot at goal. Can he turn
:23:46. > :23:52.around? But again, Manchester makes sure the ball does not bounce back
:23:53. > :24:02.into the player. A wave of English attack.
:24:03. > :24:09.They're rather not many times in the geographical area of Scotland that
:24:10. > :24:14.you will find a crowd cheering for the other home country. -- there are

:24:19. > :24:24.strong spectators who have filled the seats at the Glasgow National
:24:25. > :24:26.Hockey Centre. A huge number of players waiting to be rotated into
:24:27. > :24:41.the game on the halfway line. And a free hit, New Zealand. Four
:24:42. > :24:45.minutes to play. Yes, the final phase of this game. Neither side
:24:46. > :24:50.wants to give anything away but they would both love to get a goal,
:24:51. > :24:52.especially New Zealand, I think. It suits England slightly better
:24:53. > :24:58.because they have a slightly better goal difference by New Zealand. A
:24:59. > :25:02.draw would suit this England side. McAleese. And the English captain,
:25:03. > :25:09.Middleton, up and over it goes to Arun Panchia. First time, into
:25:10. > :25:17.George Pinner, in goal. I have been impressed with Arun Panchia, for New
:25:18. > :25:20.Zealand. A star quality about this man. And he does it again, puts
:25:21. > :25:27.people onto the foot of the English defender. -- puts the ball. Simon
:25:28. > :25:32.Mantell, receiving the ball on the foot but a lovely bit of skill by

:26:30. > :26:34.England are taking their goalkeeper. Which is what they have to do if
:26:35. > :26:39.they want to push up and get a goal. Great stroke and a good save but
:26:40. > :26:43.watch this reaction from Simon Child, absolutely fantastic, took a

:31:54. > :31:59.unbelievable. -- wheels. But they are quite different, I am trick
:32:00. > :32:04.based and they are in jobs, but good luck to them all. The Finnieston
:32:05. > :32:10.Crane looked like a scary moment, what was it like? It was not that
:32:11. > :32:14.scary for me, just an amazing time, something I have looked at
:32:15. > :32:19.everyday. I have wanted to make a swing off it, but actually getting
:32:20. > :32:25.to ride my bike on top was pretty unreal. Basically when you go around
:32:26. > :32:31.a city I you just looking at the buildings thinking, I wonder if I
:32:32. > :32:38.can jump off bad? That is all I do, my brain is always working away,
:32:39. > :32:42.looking at railings, walls. Thank you for having the time to speak to
:32:43. > :32:51.us, Danny, go and do your stuff and I will definitely get out of the
:32:52. > :32:54.way. In the meantime, various the final day at Tollcross, eight medals
:32:55. > :33:00.up for grabs, we can go back to Helen Skelton.
:33:01. > :33:08.I am so impressed, I love Danny, anybody who has been on one of those
:33:09. > :33:13.bikes has a serious mindedness, they do not have brakes, suspension,
:33:14. > :33:19.incredible stuff. I have done a bit of sprinting, I don't like to
:33:20. > :33:24.mention it, I did everything once in my former life. You did a lot of
:33:25. > :33:26.stuff in your former life. Women's 400 meter freestyle first, Jazz
:33:27. > :33:32.Carlin going in this one. Great night for her last night, she will
:33:33. > :33:37.be buzzing. She will be tired, bless her. We have seen a lot this week of
:33:38. > :33:46.the athletes think they are not getting to bed until 2am, then a
:33:47. > :33:54.quick turnaround. How did you know I sprint? I did not. These sprinters
:33:55. > :33:58.build up the lactic acid. With the distance events their muscles will
:33:59. > :34:07.be hurting. They will be making, but hopefully jazz will be buzzing. This
:34:08. > :34:12.is Hannah Miley's seventh event, Aimee Willmott is back there after
:34:13. > :34:17.the 200 fly last night when she got a medal. I think a lot of girls,
:34:18. > :34:27.everybody semi ball this morning, they swam loads this week. Swimming
:34:28. > :34:39.do distance swimmers have muscles? I want to see Jazz Carlin do a Becky
:34:40. > :34:46.and do the double. We have footage of you doing the double. Is it in
:34:47. > :34:53.black and white? I am in black and white. Glasshouses. I think he wants
:34:54. > :34:59.to be careful. Some of the punches you are knocking out. Does it seem
:35:00. > :35:03.like a long time ago? It does. It is credit to Scotland, it is absolutely
:35:04. > :35:12.incredible, this whole games. That's does look old. If you look at the
:35:13. > :35:17.stands, a lot emptier, the atmosphere was not the same. We all
:35:18. > :35:24.had Delhi belly, it is safe to say Scotland are winning hands down. I
:35:25. > :35:30.never get this feeling, 50 metres, get to the other end. You have no
:35:31. > :35:36.time to think. But what are you thinking though, are you cruising?
:35:37. > :35:43.Is it easier? I definitely was not there, we all had a case of Delhi
:35:44. > :35:47.belly and we were dead, no energy. I was just glad to put my hand on the
:35:48. > :35:52.wall and finish. It was not a great time for me. Two years earlier than
:35:53. > :36:00.that I broke the world record, I was going ten seconds slower in Delhi.
:36:01. > :36:05.Who would be great if you are so far ahead you could do the Usain Bolt.
:36:06. > :36:08.If anybody would show about I suspect it would be you, here I am a
:36:09. > :36:13.skirmish and Mark talked to me about Aimee Willmott, she swam
:36:14. > :36:21.phenomenally well last night, what will she take from these games? She
:36:22. > :36:25.will take a lot from these games. It gives them an opportunity to stand
:36:26. > :36:30.up against world-class opposition, to win medals. Those medals go home
:36:31. > :36:36.with you, it gives you a huge amount of confidence. A huge amount of
:36:37. > :36:40.confidence. This. The depth of the field is far stronger. At the
:36:41. > :36:44.impetus hopefully, talking about the Olympics in two years time, they
:36:45. > :36:50.need that hunger and drive. Hopefully coming here the medals
:36:51. > :36:55.will give them that. She has saw the middle so far in the medley and
:36:56. > :37:03.butterfly, I think she has improved so much over the past few years. She
:37:04. > :37:06.is staying with the same coach but they now train in London at the
:37:07. > :37:12.aquatic centre. Going into the Olympic Park every single day for
:37:13. > :37:16.your training, so inspiring. She has already improved so much. I am sure
:37:17. > :37:24.she has another big jump to improve on. Jazz Carlin changed coaches, was
:37:25. > :37:28.she going back and forth from Australia? It is strange because the
:37:29. > :37:32.Swansea performance centre where they were training got closed down.
:37:33. > :37:37.So her coach move to Australia. She has spent half of her time in
:37:38. > :37:46.Australia and half her time back here, splitting her time. Though
:37:47. > :37:53.that might seem strange, but will still beginning, giving her
:37:54. > :37:56.consistency. It is also a good thing, different people work in
:37:57. > :38:02.different ways but having the change of scenery, change of setup. When
:38:03. > :38:04.you are in your home pool day in, day out, it is nice to have a bit of
:38:05. > :38:23.a change. Plenty of home nations interest
:38:24. > :38:28.here. McMahon, she has won it! We were so busy talking about that,
:38:29. > :38:32.this is the first heat. Of the women's 400 meter freestyle, great
:38:33. > :38:39.swim for the girl from the Isle of Man. Northern Ireland. Northern
:38:40. > :38:48.Ireland. I am looking at the wrong shade. It is the last day, I am
:38:49. > :38:54.don't worry. She looks tired. She does look tired but a good swim from
:38:55. > :38:57.her. -- looking at the wrong sheet. We will join this one properly now
:38:58. > :39:05.with heat number two, loads of interest, English, Welsh, Scottish.
:39:06. > :39:08.Plenty of excitement, so let's go over to Andrew and Adrian to take
:39:09. > :39:10.you through this one properly. That is why they do this bed.
:39:11. > :39:24.COMMENTATOR: -- this bit. The first of the seeded heaps.
:39:25. > :39:34.McMahon of Northern Ireland winning that heat. She is in the relay for
:39:35. > :39:42.Northern Ireland. But now we get into the fastest 16 of the
:39:43. > :39:51.Commonwealth. Now we have the fastest 16, and Jazz Carlin is going
:39:52. > :39:57.in the centre, the fastest seed. Hannah Miley there as well. Aimee
:39:58. > :40:03.Willmott as well. But Jazz Carlin, goodness me, wonderful 800 free last
:40:04. > :40:05.night. Absolutely, they have been talking about how she has recovered
:40:06. > :40:17.this morning. Interesting to see, but I think she
:40:18. > :40:28.will be OK. 400 metres freestyle, first of the seeded heaps, only two
:40:29. > :40:30.seeded heats here. Jazz Carlin has one clear job this one,
:40:31. > :40:36.seeded heats here. Jazz Carlin has Make sure she gets through to
:40:37. > :40:39.seeded heats here. Jazz Carlin has final this evening. -- wagering. A
:40:40. > :40:45.decent position, Hannah Miley two from the left in the white cap doing
:40:46. > :40:54.another fun event. She does this for fun, apparently! Quite a few events.
:40:55. > :41:00.Britney Maclean had a really good bronze medal in the 800 freestyle.
:41:01. > :41:04.She will be challenging this evening for medals. Jazz Carlin doing enough
:41:05. > :41:07.but as you say I think the confidence from last night will
:41:08. > :41:10.overcome any particular lethargy she has got this morning. Through the
:41:11. > :41:17.first hundred very well. has got this morning. Through the
:41:18. > :41:22.Miley started this 400 like she started the 800 last night, went out
:41:23. > :41:29.very fast indeed. She paid a little bit in the second half. Hannah Miley
:41:30. > :41:31.there in the group of leaders, it would be great to see her make the
:41:32. > :41:38.final. The weight of the nation would be great to see her make the
:41:39. > :41:39.the first race, what a way to Scotland to start the Commonwealth
:41:40. > :41:44.Games in that medley, gold Scotland to start the Commonwealth
:41:45. > :41:49.the first race in the pool, Hannah Miley taking it. Jazz Carlin looking
:41:50. > :41:54.good but only three lengths down, five still to go. Just out of shot
:41:55. > :42:00.on the bottom is Aimee Willmott, silver medallist
:42:01. > :42:02.on the bottom is Aimee Willmott, she is not with the leading group on
:42:03. > :42:10.the right, but you can see her looking over their, it is Hannah
:42:11. > :42:14.Miley setting the pace. This is helpful for Jazz, halfway mark, if
:42:15. > :42:27.she helpful for Jazz, halfway mark, if
:42:28. > :42:29.of the race. At the halfway point it is Hannah Miley
:42:30. > :42:33.of the race. At the halfway point it medallist from the 400 medley, in
:42:34. > :42:39.second, Britney Maclean of Canada. And Jazz Carlin of Wales in second.
:42:40. > :42:46.I would like to see her make sure she can pick it
:42:47. > :42:47.very early here. She has done a really good swim,
:42:48. > :42:57.front crawl, she has worked hard on it.
:42:58. > :43:01.front crawl, she has worked hard on looked better than for a number of
:43:02. > :43:05.front crawl, she has worked hard on years. Really long, rangy. The right
:43:06. > :43:11.on going well, it was a little bit sloppy before. She is looking the
:43:12. > :43:20.right way, 100 metres left, still in contention. As you said the job,
:43:21. > :43:31.these three should qualify. Last 100 metres of this, first of the seeded
:43:32. > :43:35.heats. The first three here should make it through. Jazz Carlin looking
:43:36. > :43:40.a little bit uncomfortable closer to us, winner of the 800 metres
:43:41. > :43:46.freestyle. Maybe a little bit after the Lord Mayor 's show, it was
:43:47. > :43:50.enormously emotional last night. If she gets top three she will be fine.
:43:51. > :43:57.Hannah Miley making the move to try to upstage Maclean. She wants to win
:43:58. > :44:01.this one. Aimee Willmott is not insured, battling fourth and fifth.
:44:02. > :44:07.I think she might be losing that battle. This is Maclean, Miley, the
:44:08. > :44:14.crowd trying to lift Hannah Miley to win this heat. Miley hanging on in
:44:15. > :44:21.there, so is Jazz Carlin, weeks back those three to make it through. If
:44:22. > :44:22.the last heat goes extraordinarily fast the theory cannot make it, it
:44:23. > :44:43.is all on time. She looked a little bit tired. She
:44:44. > :44:51.has done the job. I think some rest now, emotional as you say, tiring,
:44:52. > :44:55.maybe late to bed, cannot sleep after a gold-medal. A lot of things
:44:56. > :44:59.well have contributed, but frankly she has done the job she came to do.
:45:00. > :45:04.But she has to improve on that to get the gold-medal. Maclean is
:45:05. > :45:10.trying to make up for the fact she only got the bronze. Fifth in the
:45:11. > :45:16.200 meter freestyle. Maybe hopeful this is the one she can get the
:45:17. > :45:25.gold. She looks strong, was able to react. Jazz Carlin sticking with the
:45:26. > :45:33.group. She knew she had to dig in this morning. Well, Brittany
:45:34. > :45:36.MacLean, bronze in the freestyle last night and did not have the
:45:37. > :45:41.emotion of the gold. Seventh at the Olympics. And now she will be in one
:45:42. > :45:46.of the centre lanes in the final. Hannah Miley swam very well to get
:45:47. > :45:52.second. Jazz Carlin looked a bit tired at the end. But she can go and
:45:53. > :45:57.swim it off now and have a good rest for the final. This is the final
:45:58. > :46:00.heat of the women's 400 metres freestyle. Lauren Boyle of New
:46:01. > :46:15.Zealand in Lane 4. So, she goes in Lane 4, and Faulkner
:46:16. > :46:18.of England is in Lane 2. It is fascinating in five and six, Bronte
:46:19. > :46:23.Barratt of Australia, eight years ago in Melbourne, got a bronze in
:46:24. > :46:28.the 400 metres free, and Caitlin McClatchey won gold medals in the
:46:29. > :46:33.200 and the 400. It is great to see them still here. Bronte Barratt got
:46:34. > :46:36.the bronze in the 200 freestyle. When you are talking about speed
:46:37. > :46:40.indicators and where they might be sitting, Bronte Barratt, with her
:46:41. > :46:44.bronze in the 203, will be a threat and has gone out quickly in the
:46:45. > :46:48.yellow cap. This is not a sluggish morning swim. The two Australians,
:46:49. > :46:54.Remy Fairweather, the 17-year-old, going with her. Another name of
:46:55. > :47:02.note, second from the left, Tabitha Baumann, just in shot. Alex
:47:03. > :47:09.Bowman's daughter, the double gold medallist in 2004. Brilliant first
:47:10. > :47:17.100 from Bronte Barratt. She is really pushing, quite surprising.
:47:18. > :47:20.She did not swim the 400. That was a bit surprising. But eight years
:47:21. > :47:22.after she got a bronze in the Commonwealth Games, she still looks
:47:23. > :47:29.very long and strong and really good. The world junior champion in
:47:30. > :47:33.Lane 3, Remy Fairweather. The two Australians are very good. Again,
:47:34. > :47:37.I'm a bit surprised that Lauren Boyle between them is not a bit
:47:38. > :47:50.further up. She has got very good terms, mind you. -- turns. As you
:47:51. > :47:53.mentioned, she did not deviate hundred last night, Bronte Barratt
:47:54. > :47:57.may be a bit fresher and Lauren Boyle is a bit sluggish. It is not
:47:58. > :48:01.easy to get up. Becky talked about it in the studio. But she is hanging
:48:02. > :48:04.in there, in the same kind of situation as Jazz Carlin. She has
:48:05. > :48:08.two stick with the first group, get amongst it, get in the top three and
:48:09. > :48:14.she should be OK. But this is hard for her. At the halfway turn, they
:48:15. > :48:21.are pretty quick. No wonder Lauren Boyle has not gone with them. Bronte
:48:22. > :48:24.Barratt was the first over, of Australia, and the second, Remy
:48:25. > :48:28.Fairweather of Australia and now Lauren Boyle starting to make the
:48:29. > :48:31.move in the black hat in the centre. The big threat for the gold medal
:48:32. > :48:40.this evening, for me, Lauren of New Zealand. -- Lauren Boyle. It is a
:48:41. > :48:42.big threat but good for hair, a threat to Jazz Carlin, but if you
:48:43. > :48:47.are Lauren Boyle, quite exciting because she wants a gold medal. She
:48:48. > :48:51.was fast paced to 100, Bronte Barratt and Lauren Boyle has stepped
:48:52. > :48:54.up, quite impressive that she can do that and it makes it quite
:48:55. > :48:58.threatening for the Wales and home country fans. These three swimmers
:48:59. > :49:04.are having a ding-dong battle. Lauren Boyle in the middle, now. It
:49:05. > :49:15.is an Anzac battle, here. Look at the top. Really good swimming from
:49:16. > :49:19.Samantha Cheverton of Canada. Lauren Boyle has taken the lead. She has
:49:20. > :49:23.been very cagey down the first 150 metres but has picked it up and
:49:24. > :49:27.started moving through. She has moved really well. She did not try
:49:28. > :49:36.to catch up in 50 metres. She took her time about it. That's a lesson
:49:37. > :49:38.for all of the age group is out there, don't make a move on 150, and
:49:39. > :49:50.tire yourself out. Samantha Cheverton is still going
:49:51. > :49:53.well at the top. This is an impressive spin from Lauren Boyle,
:49:54. > :49:57.and the way she has pasted, used Bronte Barratt's speed and come
:49:58. > :50:01.through, what a great swim. I think Lauren Boyle wanted to reverse what
:50:02. > :50:06.happened last night. Jazz Carlin needs a big sleep and to reset
:50:07. > :50:10.herself during the break between sessions. Lauren Boyle is strong and
:50:11. > :50:16.Remy Fairweather is staying with her. It looks as though it will be
:50:17. > :50:22.Lauren Boyle. She wins the heat, the second of the fastest seeded. She
:50:23. > :50:28.will go into the final fastest, and second fastest will be Remy
:50:29. > :50:32.Fairweather of Australia. And the top three, there, she is breathing
:50:33. > :50:38.very hard but I'm not surprised because she came back three hard in
:50:39. > :50:41.the second half. Yes, very close to doing that, Lauren Boyle, a very
:50:42. > :50:46.impressive swim. Maybe she wanted to do that to get everything moving in
:50:47. > :50:53.her body, to set herself a fast time. It will be tough to night.
:50:54. > :51:02.her body, to set herself a fast Jazz Carlin's best time is 4:04.
:51:03. > :51:06.Jazz Carlin, rested, should be capable of a gold medal but a good
:51:07. > :51:12.swim from these three. They are going
:51:13. > :51:17.second-seeded heat. Lauren Boyle winning it.
:51:18. > :51:18.second-seeded heat. Lauren Boyle bronze medallist on the 1500, the
:51:19. > :51:42.800 and this, the 400. Samantha
:51:43. > :51:48.which will be in trusting. She needs to pop out and go and have a nice,
:51:49. > :51:54.easy one down, probably a long one, maybe 1000 metres, to swim down.
:51:55. > :51:58.Then we will have the final this evening. Straight into the
:51:59. > :52:03.Paralympic events. Marc Woods is joining me. 200 medley.
:52:04. > :52:10.The SM ten category, swimming, medley, and ten is the athletes with
:52:11. > :52:15.the most minimal visibility. You can see the things that might be
:52:16. > :52:21.affected in this race. We might see a below the knee amputee, like
:52:22. > :52:25.myself. But equally, we might see someone with very modest cerebral
:52:26. > :52:30.palsy. They have the same functions in the water.
:52:31. > :52:37.Quite a few people have called in to say it is not really fair that some
:52:38. > :52:42.people, double amputees, or maybe one, swimming against someone with
:52:43. > :52:46.both their legs. It does not look on the surface like it is particularly
:52:47. > :52:50.fair but a lot of side goes into it. That's right, sometimes it does
:52:51. > :52:55.not look fair but you have to accept there are people with better
:52:56. > :53:01.knowledge than you and me, even. The people who classify the athletes
:53:02. > :53:03.have a huge physiological understanding and understanding of
:53:04. > :53:10.disability and soaring. They make sure it's fair, in the same way that
:53:11. > :53:13.if you have a weigh-in for a boxing match, it is done fairly. Sophie
:53:14. > :53:21.Pascoe is the world record holder, and she is in Lane 4.
:53:22. > :53:28.Katherine Downie. Sophie Pascoe, the six time Paralympic gold medallist.
:53:29. > :53:39.Three of them in Beijing and three of them in London 2012.
:53:40. > :53:44.We have got the fastest two in the world in this SM ten, 200 metres
:53:45. > :53:50.medley. A bit like the world in this SM ten, 200 metres
:53:51. > :53:56.races, the fastest are absolutely awesome and after that, it tails off
:53:57. > :54:03.quite quickly. One heat of the Paralympic event. The SM 10. They
:54:04. > :54:06.are just swimming for a Lane assignment for the final. Slightly
:54:07. > :54:10.disappointing that there are no home nation entries in this race. We are
:54:11. > :54:14.particularly weak in this category. If you know anyone who swims at your
:54:15. > :54:17.club who has a minimal amputation, or mild cerebral palsy, please get
:54:18. > :54:23.in touch with British swimming because we need more people in this
:54:24. > :54:28.category. Sarah Bailey, now Sarah Storey, obviously one this category
:54:29. > :54:34.before she went to cycling. We have not had anybody filling her shoes. A
:54:35. > :54:38.very strong semester or the strokes and she will be tough to beat,
:54:39. > :54:41.Sophie Pascoe but we talked about the disability early on and the
:54:42. > :54:45.medley is a good way of trying to understand how it varies. Someone
:54:46. > :54:50.who is a leg amputee will be a lot weaker on the breast stroke than
:54:51. > :54:55.someone who has a hand amputation. But it can switch around for a
:54:56. > :54:58.different stroke. And Sophie Pascoe's disability? She had an
:54:59. > :55:03.awful accident when she was a little, she was run over by a sit on
:55:04. > :55:08.more mower, by a family member and lost her leg below the knee, and her
:55:09. > :55:12.other leg was badly scarred. We might well get an overhead shot of
:55:13. > :55:17.her swing breast wrote in a second and you will be able to see the way
:55:18. > :55:21.she had to balance it out. If you have an amputation below the knee on

:08:12. > :08:15.the freestyle, if they turn together on the breast rope, he will
:08:16. > :08:19.certainly get going. Still going well, Donaldson. Four swimmers going
:08:20. > :08:24.so well here could be dangerous for the early heat swimmers. Let's have
:08:25. > :08:30.a look at the times. All of them in a row, White, Donaldson, all of
:08:31. > :08:34.them, and Fraser-Holmes will come through strongly. He needs to move,
:08:35. > :08:38.if he is fourth in the yellow cap, that is a really dangerous position
:08:39. > :08:42.to be in. Fraser-Holmes I think needs to get his act together a

:08:47. > :08:49.forth, he is coming through now in the yellow hat but he has got to get
:08:50. > :08:56.a touch here, he really needs to be second if he can. Stuck his head
:08:57. > :09:06.down inside the last five. Lloyd, a very good swim for him.
:09:07. > :09:10.Fraser-Holmes got the touch for second. I have got to tell you, some
:09:11. > :09:16.good guys will miss out here. The first heat was slow, that was
:09:17. > :09:22.relatively slow. Goodness me. Fraser-Holmes did a slightly scary
:09:23. > :09:27.-professional job. He was hanging around right until the last five
:09:28. > :09:31.metres, and we are on the edge of our seats here, because really this
:09:32. > :09:36.could be a very interesting qualification. Keep an eye out for
:09:37. > :09:48.this last heat. Good to see two Welshman in strong positions. Lloyd
:09:49. > :09:59.will certainly make the last round. The second seeded, the final heat.
:10:00. > :10:19.If that is the case, Fraser-Holmes could be out. There are a lot of
:10:20. > :10:30.quick guys here. Pavoni The second fastest seed. Fourth in the 400

:11:03. > :11:07.they should make it in, but there is a .7 eight, is really tight and five

:11:18. > :11:24.his fly. Training down in Bath now, the Rotherham boy. Rousseau, also
:11:25. > :11:30.Tranter. Tranter's hero interestingly is Mike Tyson. An
:11:31. > :11:35.aggressive way to start training. Roebuck, nice flyback. Roebuck
:11:36. > :11:41.leading with the black cap bowled England. Silver-medallist in Delhi
:11:42. > :11:53.in the 200-metre and a 400. He needs to work this fly back. A very fast
:11:54. > :12:00.first hundred. There are four guys in it at the moment, and I wonder if
:12:01. > :12:05.it is going to be those four through with the fastest four from the first
:12:06. > :12:09.two heats? It will be interesting, again, you don't want to be fourth
:12:10. > :12:13.place in this race. All of them synchronised brushstroke, beautiful.
:12:14. > :12:19.Roebuck tailing off on the brushstroke, not his strongest row,
:12:20. > :12:26.and he will trouble. Rousseau holding it. Tranter coming through
:12:27. > :12:36.on the freestyle. Roebuck, a good turn. The two Englishman batting
:12:37. > :12:39.possibly for a place. -- battling possibly. We thought these guys
:12:40. > :12:43.would go for it thinking they could make the final. It is unusual to
:12:44. > :12:47.have four guys out of one heat to make the final and I think it will
:12:48. > :12:52.happen here. The Australian, Tranter, swam a good heat. It will
:12:53. > :12:55.be fairly comfortable sub two minutes. The first three do that,
:12:56. > :13:03.Roebuck in the final as well. My goodness me. He came fourth in that
:13:04. > :13:08.heat and he will make the final. So, really very interesting indeed,
:13:09. > :13:18.and I think Thomas Fraser-Holmes will come in
:13:19. > :13:22.and I think Thomas Fraser-Holmes you have four men really realising
:13:23. > :13:26.there is a lot at stake. Breaststroke, all strong, all in a
:13:27. > :13:31.line, and then a really good turn by Tranter, a professional job, coming
:13:32. > :13:36.through in the last 25 metres to get a comfortable touch. Roebuck just

:14:11. > :14:18.This is the confirmation of the finalists:
:14:19. > :14:22.Look at the seventh and the eighth, the medals could come from the two
:14:23. > :14:37.outside lanes. The heats have bucked the trend, the
:14:38. > :14:41.final could buck the trend. Le Clos, it was interesting to see his
:14:42. > :14:45.race against Wallace, I said something about being a jack of all
:14:46. > :14:49.trades, he is not a jack of any trade on the breast rope, because

:15:03. > :15:09.You looked really controlled, it must give you a lot of confidence?
:15:10. > :15:12.My confidence is pretty high. A lot higher, it was a very controlled

:15:49. > :15:54.breaststroke very well! Dan has a great breaststroke. They were just
:15:55. > :16:00.going through 15 metres and that is impressive. Dan is an awesome
:16:01. > :16:06.breaststroke swimmer. Chad le Clos is a world-class swimmer, but if he
:16:07. > :16:09.needs to do one thing it is to work on breaststroke. Breaststroke is
:16:10. > :16:20.about timing, it is different from others. With Chad, his turns are
:16:21. > :16:24.incredible. On the backstroke and front freestyle, he works that
:16:25. > :16:26.underwater. On the breaststroke it is different under water and he
:16:27. > :22:00.misses out on guys, the veterans, it is a good

:29:48. > :29:54.pleased with the way the team is coming through? Definitely. I am
:29:55. > :29:59.happy with the guys coming through. It is weird having people biting at

:30:04. > :30:08.your heels, but it is good for the progressing. Can we beat the
:30:09. > :30:17.Australians? I would like to think so. Nothing wrong with that, a bit
:30:18. > :30:24.of optimism, they would fit in well at here. We move onto the men's four

:42:51. > :42:56.body length ahead. Can England beat Australia tonight? Can they? Yes.
:42:57. > :43:01.Will they? I really don't know. On paper, England are faster from each
:43:02. > :43:05.of the fastest hundred metre times, the back, the breast, the fly and
:43:06. > :43:11.the free, but it will not be swum on paper and you know the Aussies will

:43:22. > :43:25.yes they are, well done Northern Ireland. Australia the fastest in.

:43:43. > :43:47.A good day for Northern Ireland, they started off well and they are

:43:53. > :43:58.this morning, I think somebody dropped those biscuits in one of the
:43:59. > :44:01.computers! Anyway, men's and women's finals tonight, England, Scotland,
:44:02. > :44:06.Wales and Northern Ireland. They will change all of their team
:44:07. > :44:10.though, when they? Yes, being learned and Australian teams will,
:44:11. > :44:14.yes, they have strength in depth. Both races will be interesting, very
:44:15. > :44:18.tight. The men have not won the 400-metre medley relay since 1952
:44:19. > :44:23.and they have a very good chance the night. Yes, they have. On paper,
:44:24. > :44:30.they are meant to be faster than the Australians. The women as well will

:45:27. > :45:31.Melbourne. I think it is about Glasgow today. The wind has picked
:45:32. > :45:36.up. It is pretty breezy at Pacific Quay. I imagine you would find it
:45:37. > :45:50.more windy if you were doing acrobatics on a boat. We have been

:46:18. > :46:29.And Greg Rutherford captured in this one. Cathkin Braes is home to the

:46:36. > :46:39.the leaders in this race to come through the start finish area after
:46:40. > :46:46.the first opening lap of the six lap race. They will come through any
:46:47. > :46:50.moment now. They will compete about 32 kilometres. It is a hot pace from
:46:51. > :46:56.the start. A breakaway group of seven riders took hold of the race.
:46:57. > :46:59.They included Annie Last. Out on the seven riders took hold of the race.
:47:00. > :47:06.They included Annie Last. Out on the course, Canada's Catharine Pendrel
:47:07. > :47:10.has taken control of the race. Rebecca Henderson trying to chase
:47:11. > :47:15.down the experienced Canadian. At the moment, it looks like the
:47:16. > :47:17.Canadian rider will try to control the race from the front. We can go
:47:18. > :47:32.over to commentary. COMMENTATOR: Henderson trying to
:47:33. > :47:35.hold on for second place. Her best chance of taking Catharine Pendrel
:47:36. > :47:42.is if there is a technical problem or a fall for the Canadian leader.
:47:43. > :47:46.As good as the riders are, it only takes a lapse of concentration. And
:47:47. > :47:51.there are plenty of treacherous segments on the course. From walking
:47:52. > :47:57.it yesterday, an awful lot of climbing, as well. Back with
:47:58. > :48:09.Catharine Pendrel, the leader. Well clear of Henderson of Australia. And
:48:10. > :48:16.also Annie Last, of England. If she can hold this pace and
:48:17. > :48:22.determination, she will put more time into her competitors. She is
:48:23. > :48:26.putting a lot of hard work into this. This long steady climb, just
:48:27. > :48:36.what you need when your legs are burning! Barely any flat on this
:48:37. > :48:41.course. There is one section called rest to be thankful, but it
:48:42. > :48:43.course. There is one section called last long. A look behind from
:48:44. > :48:57.Catharine Pendrel to see what the gap is between herself. Rebecca
:48:58. > :49:11.Henderson and Emily Batty are riding along together. The Canadians,
:49:12. > :49:14.perhaps, eyeing up a 1-2. They have won the previous two Commonwealth
:49:15. > :49:21.Games in the women's event. They will certainly want to win today's.
:49:22. > :49:23.Emily Batty, slipped herself into second position. She will possibly
:49:24. > :49:34.be the biggest threat the second position. She will possibly
:49:35. > :49:42.Pendrel. Canada have dominated in the men's and the women's, winning
:49:43. > :49:46.six of those available in the cross-country mountain bike. This is
:49:47. > :49:51.the third time this event has been present at the Commonwealth Games.
:49:52. > :49:57.It was a big app in the cycling schedule in Delhi, four years ago.
:49:58. > :50:09.Coming down towards Propeller points. -- Propeller Point. It is
:50:10. > :50:11.Coming down towards Propeller obstacle a bit of a name.
:50:12. > :50:20.Coming down towards Propeller favourites is the Double Dare. They
:50:21. > :50:20.have options, they have been built so similar they
:50:21. > :50:25.favourites is the Double Dare. They have options, they have believe you
:50:26. > :50:29.carry the same speed through both options but the riders have an
:50:30. > :50:35.opportunity to pass each other. We will let you know when the riders
:50:36. > :50:48.gets to that section. There is a climb up towards Double Dare. The
:50:49. > :50:52.descents down snakes. With the riders being spread out,
:50:53. > :50:59.particularly for the leader, she can give herself the ultimate choice of
:51:00. > :51:07.lines and maybe swap the lines over. It seemed to be the fastest route to
:51:08. > :51:12.start on one side of Double Dare, and then switch. This is an aerial
:51:13. > :51:18.view. It is a fast downhill. We get a lot of momentum and speed. She is
:51:19. > :51:26.coming along and approaching the Double Dare section. She will want
:51:27. > :51:32.to take the fastest route to gain another couple of seconds. It seems
:51:33. > :51:40.she can only be beaten by herself at the moment. The second lap of six,
:51:41. > :51:46.Catharine Pendrel, the highest ranked rider in this competition.
:51:47. > :51:52.Well clear of Rebecca Henderson. Catharine Pendrel is 17th in the
:51:53. > :51:57.rankings. Henderson is 20. Emily Batty is 21. Catharine Pendrel
:51:58. > :52:04.talked a good game before the race began and she is holding up her end
:52:05. > :52:07.of the bargain. She started on the right side and switched
:52:08. > :52:10.of the bargain. She started on the left. The opposite, in fact.
:52:11. > :52:22.Starting on the left and switching to the right. The battle of the
:52:23. > :52:28.second and third. Henderson, she has slipped down into third place. Emily
:52:29. > :52:37.Batty just leads her. Both riders taking the different lines down. We
:52:38. > :52:41.will now see which is faster. It will be interesting to know which
:52:42. > :52:50.rider wants to be in France. There is also an advantage to being
:52:51. > :52:55.behind. -- wants to be in front. We could have a mighty race for silver
:52:56. > :53:00.and bronze medals. Rebecca Henderson switch to the other side of the
:53:01. > :53:06.track. She thought her side was better than the one she was on. They
:53:07. > :53:11.have slipped back into the slipstream of two riders. That is my
:53:12. > :53:17.favourite section, where you can see both riders going down together.
:53:18. > :53:26.Catharine Pendrel making her way along again. There was no rest on
:53:27. > :53:31.the course. Up and down all day. Cross-country is like that. There is
:53:32. > :53:38.no scope for drafting, it is about your hard work and you feel every
:53:39. > :53:43.inch of the course. It is energy sapping. There are long, steady
:53:44. > :53:50.climbs and some sharp climbs where they will be down the gear set and
:53:51. > :53:56.out of the saddle. I have not had the privilege of riding it but it is
:53:57. > :54:02.a fantastic course. It has been designed by a famous mountain bike
:54:03. > :54:07.course designer. He speaks about the passion of building courses. He has
:54:08. > :54:11.been employed by the UCI to build courses like this. He travels around
:54:12. > :54:18.the world building cross-country courses. A lot of the athletes are
:54:19. > :54:29.happy with this course. They say it is not too technical, but it has
:54:30. > :54:35.fantastic parts in it. Catharine Pendrel is still leading and she is
:54:36. > :54:41.determined to claim the gold medal. She has shown that termination so
:54:42. > :54:47.far in this performance. Henderson and the other Canadian, Emily Batty
:54:48. > :54:52.in the battle for second place. Catharine Pendrel hoping to steer
:54:53. > :55:00.clear of butchers, mechanical problems and any lapses in
:55:01. > :55:11.concentration. -- steer clear of punctures. This is the Rest And Be
:55:12. > :55:21.Thankful part of the course. Then you come into Queen Mary's drop. The
:55:22. > :55:27.inside one has a cobbled drop. Not something you would want to take on
:55:28. > :55:34.a wet day. That looks the most difficult option of that drop. She
:55:35. > :55:39.took the outside line, not taking any chances, because she has a big
:55:40. > :55:43.lead. The inside is the shortest, but the most technical. Maybe
:55:44. > :55:58.playing safe, taking the easier options. She does enjoy a massive
:55:59. > :56:03.lead at the moment. 19 seconds at the last break. That might have
:56:04. > :56:07.increased up to 30 as she makes her way down Braveheart, another section
:56:08. > :56:11.named by the locals. Not every section will remain for the locals
:56:12. > :56:23.to ride when the Commonwealth Games packs up. Broken Biscuits, Clyde
:56:24. > :56:31.climb and Brig O'Doom will remain. You can understand this because you
:56:32. > :56:38.could get into trouble on subsections. Catharine Pendrel
:56:39. > :56:43.finish second in the World Cup this year, despite a broken collarbone
:56:44. > :56:51.and missing the first round. She got back in time for the second round.
:56:52. > :56:55.Emily Batty was also able to get a podium this year. And she is sitting

:57:31. > :57:36.coming to form at the right time, winning the national championship
:57:37. > :57:42.ten days ago. Back with the leader. At 33, it might be the last time she
:57:43. > :57:50.could claim this Commonwealth Games gold medal. She won the Pan-American
:57:51. > :57:56.games gold medal in 2007 stop she studies the courses, lying in bed
:57:57. > :58:01.visualising the course the night before. The best possible scenario
:58:02. > :58:07.for her would have been what has taken place here. This is the battle
:58:08. > :58:12.for second and third. Emily Batty with a slender advantage over
:58:13. > :58:17.Rebecca Henderson. If these two remain like this until the end of
:58:18. > :58:22.the six the lap it will be quite a race to the line, up the hill. It
:58:23. > :58:29.will be a question of who has most strength and energy left in that
:58:30. > :58:37.energy sapping finish. Fourth and fifth, English riders. Annie Last
:58:38. > :58:44.and Alice Barnes. Bethany Crumpton is the third English rider in this
:58:45. > :58:48.competition. They do not have the advantage of being closer to ride
:58:49. > :58:53.the course because they only finalise the course yesterday, it
:58:54. > :58:58.was that late. The course was built a while ago but they threw in extra
:58:59. > :59:04.difficult bits. They are crossing one of the most difficult, the
:59:05. > :59:09.Broken Biscuits. She almost had problems on the first lap, Catharine
:59:10. > :59:20.Pendrel, but she went through that more conservatively. There is no
:59:21. > :59:25.need to take any chances. She did not get off to the best start,
:59:26. > :59:31.almost waiting her turn, and then she flew to the front and has not
:59:32. > :59:32.looked back since. Catharine Pendrel will be confident with her endurance
:59:33. > :59:39.and form. This circuit is based on will be confident with her endurance
:59:40. > :59:43.endurance and stamina, rather than the technical aspect. She played it
:59:44. > :59:48.safe at the start but when she got the opening when she could go for
:59:49. > :59:55.it, she put daylight between herself and second and third places. The
:59:56. > :00:07.second blaze, Emily Batty, and also after her Rebecca Henderson. They
:00:08. > :00:10.remain together, Emily Batty and Henderson. But the gap has got
:00:11. > :00:14.bigger between Henderson. But the gap has got
:00:15. > :00:23.Pendrel. 49 seconds is the gap from team-mate Emily Batty. The two
:00:24. > :00:30.English riders are currently in fourth and fifth place. It will be
:00:31. > :00:34.interesting to see the significant gap between the riders in fourth and
:00:35. > :00:39.fifth place and the riders in podium positions at the moment. The
:00:40. > :00:45.interesting thing about the competition at the moment, the
:00:46. > :00:48.second and third and fifth placed riders, Emily Batty,
:00:49. > :00:53.second and third and fifth placed Annie Last, ride on the same
:00:54. > :00:59.professional mountain bike team. They know each other quite well,
:01:00. > :01:00.racing World Cups together in the same organisation with the same
:01:01. > :01:07.support staff. same organisation with the same
:01:08. > :01:21.from Barnes, the newish rider in thought, and Henderson in third -- a
:01:22. > :01:22.30 second gap. -- the English rider in fourth place and Henderson
:01:23. > :01:25.30 second gap. -- the English rider third. With all of the variables on
:01:26. > :01:29.a mountain bike track, there is nothing to be taken for granted.
:01:30. > :01:35.This was the last part of the section to be finished. It was the
:01:36. > :01:40.little sharp dirt climb that you see Pendrel coming up. There was some
:01:41. > :01:45.pretty loose soil on that as well, so it is about getting your body
:01:46. > :01:50.position right. They make it look quite easy, we had a bit of a
:01:51. > :01:52.struggle walking up that section, trying to get traction. These
:01:53. > :02:03.athletes are making it look quite easy. Again around the Gilmore tree
:02:04. > :02:07.as it is now known. It got a big hug from me yesterday when a rider came
:02:08. > :02:11.zooming past. This is quite a difficult section that they'll so
:02:12. > :02:18.look quite easy -- make look quite easy. With a bit of lactic acid in
:02:19. > :02:23.the legs, each of these obstacles and sections on the course are going
:02:24. > :02:29.to get much more difficult. She is not looking behind so much now,
:02:30. > :02:34.Pendrel, keeping that the pace up, powering through. And there has been
:02:35. > :02:41.a bit of an incident here, as you can see. We have a fall on this
:02:42. > :02:50.segment, which has built up -- someone who has fallen. Kate Fluker
:02:51. > :02:55.has gone down. She has held up Karen Hendley, the New Zealand team-mate,
:02:56. > :02:58.behind her. That was very unfortunate, the two Kiwis who came
:02:59. > :03:05.in with fine form, talking to their high-performance managers yesterday.
:03:06. > :03:09.That might bring the followers up together. Pendrel will not know
:03:10. > :03:15.about that at the moment. This is why they like to get out in front
:03:16. > :03:19.early in the race, to stay away from those unfortunate mishaps. Yes, that
:03:20. > :03:24.can cost you an awful amount of time and it all piles up like that. It
:03:25. > :03:30.just shows you at this level they don't consider it an over technical
:03:31. > :03:35.course, but it shows you how difficult it is, with experienced
:03:36. > :03:40.riders getting into trouble. There is a lot that can go wrong on this
:03:41. > :03:46.course, because of the stones that are out there. Sometimes you land on
:03:47. > :03:50.such rough surfaces. That was noticeable yesterday. As you say,
:03:51. > :03:55.the landing sections can be pretty gnarly at times, and there is few
:03:56. > :04:03.routes out there that can catch you unawares. This is the battle between
:04:04. > :04:06.silver and bronze between the Australian Rebecca Henderson and
:04:07. > :04:12.Emily Batty of Canada. Canada will be desperate at the top two steps of
:04:13. > :04:18.the podium, and a disaster, it looks like Catharine Pendrel will be
:04:19. > :04:22.occupying top spot on that podium. I do know if it would be slipping into
:04:23. > :04:26.her mind, but it would be slipping into mine if there could be a
:04:27. > :04:31.mechanical. I would be very worried about that. The mechanics will have
:04:32. > :04:34.been nothing over these bikes ten times this morning, making sure
:04:35. > :04:39.nothing can go wrong, but something can always go wrong, especially on a
:04:40. > :04:46.course like this, which has a few difficult sections. Four laps to go.
:04:47. > :04:49.Going over 20 kph. The speeds are much less than you get on the roads
:04:50. > :04:57.but the effort level is every much bit up there. You can see these two
:04:58. > :05:03.riders getting into a bit of a team time trial mode, sometimes batty is
:05:04. > :05:12.in front, the other time Henderson in front. -- Batty. Karen Hanlen,
:05:13. > :05:16.who we saw having trouble a few moments ago, getting into all sorts
:05:17. > :05:24.of trouble, we understand she has come off again. We are concentrating
:05:25. > :05:31.at the moment on the battle the second between Henderson and Batty.
:05:32. > :05:34.Not only whistle Karen Hanlen get caught up in dirty make that fell,
:05:35. > :05:37.Kate Fluker, perhaps the adrenaline got pumping, try to make up some
:05:38. > :05:42.time, put herself under a bit of pressure, oh, she has just had to
:05:43. > :05:46.put her foot down. I am not sure how that happened but she came around
:05:47. > :05:49.that corner. That is often what happens when you get held up a bit,
:05:50. > :05:53.the Journal in starts rushing and you need to get that time back that
:05:54. > :05:57.you lost and she has just decided to run down that hill. The trouble is
:05:58. > :06:01.when you lose a bit of momentum, you do live Chile just have to run down
:06:02. > :06:07.and get back on again. She has had a tough time of it on this lap, Karen
:06:08. > :06:10.Hanlen, the New Zealander. The Oceana and New Zealand champion,
:06:11. > :06:17.remember, really struggling here at the Commonwealth Games. There are
:06:18. > :06:26.the top five, Barnes and Last, still some way adrift. Pendrel, Henderson
:06:27. > :06:29.and Batty other three riders dominating this. Lee Craigie, the
:06:30. > :06:34.local Glaswegian rider, down in sixth position. This ride at the
:06:35. > :06:40.moment is all about Catharine Pendrel, the runaway leader from
:06:41. > :06:44.Canada. Looking to make up for disappointment at the last two
:06:45. > :06:48.Olympic Games. Nine seconds she missed out on a medal by in
:06:49. > :06:51.Beijing, and in cross-country mountain biking that is a
:06:52. > :07:02.hair's-breadth on missing out on a medal. Two New Zealand riders coming
:07:03. > :07:13.through, Kate Fluker and Karen Hanlen. It is disappointing. They
:07:14. > :07:17.felt good this morning, the two Kiwis, but they have had some bad
:07:18. > :07:20.luck with a couple of crashes there. New Zealand have meddled in
:07:21. > :07:27.the two previous women's anti-bike races. Susie Pryde took silver in
:07:28. > :07:33.2002, Rosario Joseph the same colour in 2006. A medal not looking on the
:07:34. > :07:38.table at the moment for the Kiwis. This is Pendrel, dominating this
:07:39. > :07:42.ride, there has even been talk of the Canadians perhaps taking top
:07:43. > :07:46.spot in the men's and women's this year. Pendrel certainly at the
:07:47. > :07:51.moment holding up her end of the bargain, as she goes down again into
:07:52. > :07:56.your favourite segment of the race, Double Dare. Yes, I would really
:07:57. > :08:02.like to get a mountain bike and have a go at that, it looks like a lot of
:08:03. > :08:06.fun. You can see Pendrel there, she has slowed down actually a little
:08:07. > :08:10.bit in the last lap, the last lap was very fast down here but now she
:08:11. > :08:14.can afford to take it a little bit easy. She doesn't want to take any
:08:15. > :08:21.risks. This might be a section where athletes that come onto the Double
:08:22. > :08:26.Dare will be able to see their opponents out in front. This is how
:08:27. > :08:34.we stand at the moment, Catharine Pendrel leading by one minute.
:08:35. > :08:40.Henderson and Batty tied together and then a 40 second gap to the next
:08:41. > :08:46.riders. Alice Barnes and Annie Last, the two Englishwomen. It looks like
:08:47. > :08:53.we will have the excitement of seeing these two riders going down
:08:54. > :08:59.the Double Dare this time. They have taken different lines again. I can't
:09:00. > :09:02.remember if it is the same line bait last time whether they have swapped
:09:03. > :09:06.over, but it does seem when one goes one way, the other takes the other.
:09:07. > :09:10.But there is nothing between these two riders. This is going to develop
:09:11. > :09:19.into a fantastic race, if it remains like this. Swapping over second
:09:20. > :09:23.position at the moment, the Canadians Batty and Rebecca
:09:24. > :09:30.Henderson. Those are the two English riders, riding together in fourth
:09:31. > :09:34.and fifth place. Barnes and Last. Barnes, the 19-year-old from Oxford,
:09:35. > :09:39.selected to be part of the British cycling Academy head of the 2016
:09:40. > :09:42.Olympics in Rio, which is the major target for her, although she did say
:09:43. > :09:48.initially it was to compete in these games, her major ambition. She has
:09:49. > :09:57.not had a bad season in the under 23 World Cup, though she failed to
:09:58. > :10:04.finish higher than 18th. You just see their Barnes swapping over the
:10:05. > :10:07.line on Double Dare halfway down. Back with the leader, Catharine
:10:08. > :10:12.Pendrel. At the last count, more than a minute ahead of nearest
:10:13. > :10:18.rivals, Rebecca Henderson and Emily Batty. Of course, the mechanics can
:10:19. > :10:22.do their bit of course, make sure the bike is in absolute tip top
:10:23. > :10:26.condition, but of course you can never count for the dreaded
:10:27. > :10:31.puncture, can you, or a heavy fall. Although, with a minute lead, she
:10:32. > :10:35.does have the luxury as we saw on the Queen Mary 's drop of taking ace
:10:36. > :10:40.slower, safer line. Yes, it looks like she has that clear advantage.
:10:41. > :10:44.She can also take sections to get her wrist back and get form, and she
:10:45. > :10:48.is not under much pressure here. It is no surprise for us, because she
:10:49. > :10:53.was the clear favourite going into today's race. Her team-mate Emily
:10:54. > :10:57.Batty is fighting it out for second position at the moment with Rebecca
:10:58. > :11:08.Henderson. Emily Batty has a lot of fans who will be watching her today.
:11:09. > :11:16.18.6 5000 followers, one of the most popular -- 18.65 K followers. That
:11:17. > :11:20.is the good thing with popular -- 18.65 K followers. That
:11:21. > :11:24.these days, the athletes can gauge how many fans they have, can't they?
:11:25. > :11:27.That is right, and how many fans they have, can't they?
:11:28. > :11:30.the opportunity of reaching their fans with what is going on
:11:31. > :11:35.the opportunity of reaching their their preparation, and letting them
:11:36. > :11:38.know how everything is going. The former world champion, Catharine
:11:39. > :11:42.Pendrel of Canada, more than a minute in front, looking good for
:11:43. > :11:46.gold in the return of mountain biking to the Commonwealth Games.
:11:47. > :11:48.She has had a good year so far. She was second at the World
:11:49. > :12:01.She has had a good year so far. She round three in novel -- in May. This
:12:02. > :12:04.is the Braveheart section. Again, these riders make it look pretty
:12:05. > :12:06.easy, and of course it never comes across on screen just how steep some
:12:07. > :12:10.easy, and of course it never comes of those gradients are when they are
:12:11. > :12:13.descending down. Prandelli, as most of the riders have done over the
:12:14. > :12:18.last couple of days, have made that looked extremely easy. That
:12:19. > :12:21.Braveheart section looked extremely easy. That
:12:22. > :12:23.steepest we have seen on the course. We basically slid the whole way down
:12:24. > :12:34.it, and then it was very We basically slid the whole way down
:12:35. > :12:40.had a couple of sketchy moments just in our trainers, let alone with a
:12:41. > :12:44.bike underneath us. Fabulous views of Glasgow from that Rest and Be
:12:45. > :12:49.Thankful section, you can see nearly half of the Commonwealth Games from
:12:50. > :12:53.there. This is the Queen Mary 's drop. Playing it safe. Yesterday in
:12:54. > :12:57.training we saw an awful lot of riders coming down off the inside
:12:58. > :13:00.and going for it. That looked like the more difficult section for us,
:13:01. > :13:04.but it was the quicker way around. It will be interesting to see
:13:05. > :13:07.whether the men take the inside or the outside, but that would have
:13:08. > :13:11.been an opportunity for Rebecca Henderson to get in front of Batty.
:13:12. > :13:16.We are not sure she wants to be at this point. She looks quite
:13:17. > :13:22.comfortable, sitting very close to the wheel, even on the technical
:13:23. > :13:26.sections. Straight back onto the wheel of Emily Batty. No problems
:13:27. > :13:33.down through the Braveheart, as they come across again these juristic
:13:34. > :13:39.views. It is the best frontage point you can have really to see across
:13:40. > :13:41.the city of Glasgow. It will be interesting to get a very close look
:13:42. > :13:44.at Rebecca Henderson, the Australian, what she is actually
:13:45. > :13:51.wearing, because she is extremely superstitious. She says that she won
:13:52. > :13:56.her first few under 23 Mountain bike World Cup races in a mix in Jersey,
:13:57. > :13:59.then she switched to a skin suit and became second for a few times in a
:14:00. > :14:06.row, and when she came back to the Nixon jersey, she came back to the
:14:07. > :14:11.top of the podium. That is how particular these athletes can be.
:14:12. > :14:15.Maybe it has played on her mind a bit. If she did not have the option
:14:16. > :14:22.it would be interesting to see what she is wearing today. Superstitions
:14:23. > :14:26.play such a large part of sporting psychology. I am sure you have one
:14:27. > :14:28.play such a large part of sporting psychology. I am sure you have or
:14:29. > :14:31.two? I am not actually very superstitious myself, but I know
:14:32. > :14:35.that just a comment from the wrong person on the wrong warning can ruin
:14:36. > :14:40.weeks of perfect preparation, so when it gets down to race day, you
:14:41. > :14:44.need to try to block everything out around you, your surroundings, and
:14:45. > :14:49.just believe in what you have done, and the work you have done, the form
:14:50. > :14:55.you are in, and let everything play out the way it does. But
:14:56. > :14:58.superstitions are a very common thing in cycling, particularly in
:14:59. > :15:02.the women's cycling. I know about that, I am not so involved in the
:15:03. > :15:05.men's side of things, but a lot of the women have very strong
:15:06. > :15:09.superstitions. This is her least favourite part of the course, the
:15:10. > :15:20.Broken Biscuits of course, the only time we have seen her move into any
:15:21. > :15:25.trouble at all. Through the Broken Biscuits, the 29 inch wheels, they
:15:26. > :15:33.said the course is suited to the larger wheel, the 26 inch. 29
:15:34. > :15:38.inches, they are the most popular on this course. They say it has a lot
:15:39. > :15:42.to do with the bigger wheels. Having the position where the wheel hits
:15:43. > :15:47.the obstacles in relation to the axel of the front and rear wheel,
:15:48. > :15:55.but 29 is the favourite. It is worth mentioning they just have front
:15:56. > :16:01.suspension. Really interesting for the average leisure mountain bike
:16:02. > :16:06.rider, who probably rise with rear suspension, also. Probably can't
:16:07. > :16:13.believe they take these obstacles on hard tail bikes, but they do. There
:16:14. > :16:19.is a button to change the suspension and turn it on and off. A lot of
:16:20. > :16:23.riders will soften it when they go down the rough obstacles, and when
:16:24. > :16:30.they get to the flat, all the uphill, they lock the suspension out
:16:31. > :16:35.so that the bikes are stiffer. Given how steep the climbs are, it would
:16:36. > :16:44.be a nightmare to have rear suspension. Mountain bikes are
:16:45. > :16:48.developing. Some of the men will be racing on electronic gears in the
:16:49. > :16:51.mountain bike race. Most of the women use mechanical gears. They
:16:52. > :16:59.have the lock-out system with the suspension, but mostly hydraulic.
:17:00. > :17:03.This bike at the moment, a little bit soft. We can see the suspension
:17:04. > :17:11.working so she does not have it locked out completely. That is Alice
:17:12. > :17:16.Barnes, or ranked 309 in the UCI ranking. It shows the scope of
:17:17. > :17:24.ranking we have with Catharine Pendrel who is 17th, and one of the
:17:25. > :17:30.leading riders in the world. Alice Barnes is going well. She seems to
:17:31. > :17:38.have pulled away from Annie Last, her team-mate. The English riders
:17:39. > :17:43.are no longer together. One minute and 18 seconds is the difference
:17:44. > :17:50.between Pendrel and Batty. Every time that is increasing for the
:17:51. > :17:56.Canadian. Alice Barnes, the younger sister of Hannah Barnes, a fantastic
:17:57. > :18:02.road rider. Alice Barnes in fourth position. She is having a fantastic
:18:03. > :18:23.race. She comes from a strong cycling family. Scotland's Lee
:18:24. > :18:33.Craigie is still holding onto six. We just saw Mary Mburu, the Kenyan,
:18:34. > :18:41.no longer involved in the race. Rebecca Henderson has taken the lead
:18:42. > :18:44.from Batty. Henderson taking up a second spot and a slight gap is
:18:45. > :18:52.opening up, the biggest we have seen. It looks like Rebecca
:18:53. > :18:56.Henderson was waiting for the section she likes to put pressure on
:18:57. > :19:02.Batty. That will lose her seconds, Batty. She will have to put a lot of
:19:03. > :19:07.effort to pull back Rebecca Henderson, but that looks like the
:19:08. > :19:12.tactic of Henderson, close on the wheel of Emily Batty and then she
:19:13. > :19:23.got into the section she likes and took the lead. That section, there
:19:24. > :19:28.is a lot of loose earth on top of the extremely steep climb. And there
:19:29. > :19:35.is a steep climb in the Brig O'Doom. Batty can not afford any more
:19:36. > :19:40.mistakes. That is a steep section and a few riders put their foot
:19:41. > :19:44.down. This is when it can go wrong. She was so in her rhythm in the
:19:45. > :19:51.front, but when Henderson moved in front, it put pressure on. She had
:19:52. > :19:57.to get off the bike, which means she has to work so hard to get back to
:19:58. > :20:05.the wheel, producing lactic acid. You hope it is a technical error and
:20:06. > :20:11.not her legs tiring. It looked like panic. She was comfortable on the
:20:12. > :20:15.front, she was riding in rhythm, but when Rebecca Henderson went past and
:20:16. > :20:19.put the pressure on, I do not know whether she got nervous, the extra
:20:20. > :20:26.speed was difficult, but a couple of things going wrong. This is Pendrel,
:20:27. > :20:34.the leader. Giving her hands a break on the outside of the handlebars. It
:20:35. > :20:37.is not a particularly steep gradient, but it is a long and
:20:38. > :20:46.drawn-out climb to the finishing straight. Pendrel will want the
:20:47. > :20:52.victory. She was disappointed after the Olympics in 2012, when she
:20:53. > :20:58.finished ninth. It sounds like a good results, but she was very
:20:59. > :21:03.disappointed at the Olympic Games. This is the battle for second and
:21:04. > :21:12.third. Pendrel is increasing the lead. She looks in great shape. 51
:21:13. > :21:23.kilograms, five tall, Pendrel, but no lack of power as she increases
:21:24. > :21:26.the gap. Alice Barnes, the 19-year-old English rider, she has
:21:27. > :21:31.work to do to get on the podium. It probably will not happen, but if she
:21:32. > :21:39.could finish in the top five, it would be terrific. It would be a
:21:40. > :21:45.fantastic results. Batty taking the position Henderson had. She made her
:21:46. > :21:51.way back after a few mistakes. It will be interesting to see if she
:21:52. > :21:58.will be comfortable in second. They ride on the same professional
:21:59. > :22:03.mountain bike team. There will be some ribbing, whoever claims the
:22:04. > :22:05.silver medal. This will be some fight between the two club
:22:06. > :22:09.team-mates, but on fight between the two club
:22:10. > :22:14.today, the Canadian and Australian. fight between the two club
:22:15. > :22:19.Henderson and Batty. The Australian had a go at trying to shake off
:22:20. > :22:24.Batty. Batty had her feet down on the sharp climbs, but credit to her,
:22:25. > :22:32.she has hung in there with Henderson. The rider just trying to

:22:51. > :22:55.They might not have had the chance to practice taking the bottle, which
:22:56. > :23:02.can have a huge effect. If she misses a bottle now, she cannot feed
:23:03. > :23:13.until approximately 1718 minutes later. She does have a significant
:23:14. > :23:18.lead. One minute and 26 seconds, Pendrel ahead of Henderson and
:23:19. > :23:24.Batty. That is quite a lead, given the quality of the riders in second
:23:25. > :23:28.and third. A big gap until fourth and fifth place. Alice Barnes has
:23:29. > :23:31.opened up the gap from her more and fifth place. Alice Barnes has
:23:32. > :23:39.opened up the gap from experienced team-mate, Annie Last. The top five
:23:40. > :23:45.dominated by England, Canada, and Australia. Lee Craigie, the local
:23:46. > :23:52.rider, in sixth place for Scotland. 35 years of age. Warning Glasgow.
:23:53. > :23:57.She extended her career to take part in these championships. She has been
:23:58. > :24:09.on the podium in the last three British Championships. Karen Hanlen,
:24:10. > :24:22.despite falls, is still in eighth place for New Zealand. Here she is,
:24:23. > :24:30.Catharine Pendrel. On the Double Dare. Able to take things easily.
:24:31. > :24:40.She is a phenomenal athlete. In the year of 2011, when she won the world
:24:41. > :24:44.mountain bike championships, she won gold in two other Championships. She

:24:56. > :25:02.physical therapy or sports psychology after her career, so she
:25:03. > :25:08.is an accomplished woman. The term all-rounder is certainly significant
:25:09. > :25:12.for Catharine Pendrel, who is charging her way towards the gold
:25:13. > :25:17.medal in the Commonwealth Games. It looks like she will maintain her
:25:18. > :25:19.perfect record for women's cross-country mountain bikers in the
:25:20. > :25:29.Commonwealth Games. This is the top eight. Karen Hanlen and Kate Fluker
:25:30. > :25:38.got caught up when Karen Hanlen came off. This is where the excitement
:25:39. > :25:44.could happen at the end of lap six. The battle for silver between
:25:45. > :25:47.Henderson and Batty will stop how Rebecca Henderson would love to
:25:48. > :25:55.break up the potential gold and silver for the Canadians. It would
:25:56. > :26:00.make a huge difference to Henderson and Emily Batty, it is so
:26:01. > :26:04.prestigious, the Commonwealth Games silver medal. Henderson crossed over
:26:05. > :26:09.from right-to-left to get in front. She knows interrupting the line of
:26:10. > :26:13.Emily Batty gives her the advantage. It will be interesting to know what
:26:14. > :26:20.goes through their minds when they are team-mates, travelling together
:26:21. > :26:28.all season, and then battling it out at the Commonwealth Games. Alice
:26:29. > :26:34.Barnes, who is sticking in their, you never know, if there is an error

:26:39. > :26:48.Canadian and Australian party. -- 19-year-old. It is not raining yet,
:26:49. > :26:51.but it is threatening. The skies are dark and grey. It will
:26:52. > :26:55.but it is threatening. The skies are course significantly, bearing in
:26:56. > :27:09.mind the men's race is also to come after 2pm will -- 2pm. It will be a
:27:10. > :27:13.phenomenal story if she pulls this off after breaking her collarbone.
:27:14. > :27:20.Only those who have broken their collarbone knows the -- neighbour
:27:21. > :27:27.challenges that come with that. As an athlete, you cannot do anything
:27:28. > :27:31.for yourself with the broken collarbone, but there is the mental
:27:32. > :27:37.fear about getting back on the bike. She took it easy at first, perhaps
:27:38. > :27:43.to avoid any mishaps. No doubt she would be scared of falling on that
:27:44. > :27:47.shoulder again. I spoke to someone who said you are not a proper
:27:48. > :27:53.cyclist unless you have had a broken collarbone. I have had one. I
:27:54. > :27:59.qualified, I have been a real cyclist! I bet a number of athletes
:28:00. > :28:06.in this competition have broken mayors. Taking the outside line, no
:28:07. > :28:14.chances. It is clever from Pendrel. She knows she has an over 90 seconds
:28:15. > :28:21.lead from Henderson and Batty, the two closest to her. It is a case of
:28:22. > :28:25.holding concentration. There has been a minor mishap, through the
:28:26. > :28:32.Broken Biscuits, when she almost got into trouble. Significant clique,
:28:33. > :28:37.the dropped water bottle, you wonder what that will take out of her. It
:28:38. > :28:44.is a long way to travel without water. It could have a physical and
:28:45. > :28:49.mental effect. It has been hot this past week and the athletes have had
:28:50. > :28:56.to keep their hydration high. It has been extremely hot. It is cooler
:28:57. > :29:06.today than yesterday. We were sweating buckets walking around the
:29:07. > :29:07.course yesterday. I wore my shorts today and wish I had gone for
:29:08. > :29:12.trousers! course yesterday. I wore my shorts
:29:13. > :29:19.today and wish The atmosphere is building. An amazing amount of
:29:20. > :29:23.spectators here. Henderson and Batty still together. Henderson is unable
:29:24. > :29:29.to shake off Batty, who has recovered from being off the back in
:29:30. > :29:34.terms of having a foot down in consecutive climbs, particularly
:29:35. > :29:42.through the Brig O'Doom and another section. It will be interesting to
:29:43. > :29:47.see how she copes with that again. In the mind of Henderson, if she had
:29:48. > :29:55.noticed that, maybe she can take advantage and put her foot down.
:29:56. > :30:07.Rebecca Henderson, aged 22. Emily Batty is 26 years of age. Some bad
:30:08. > :30:13.weather is rolling in. This is down the Braveheart. We are beginning to
:30:14. > :30:19.feel spots of rain. Pendrel will not want that. There is a lot of slate
:30:20. > :30:28.and rock on this section. If you caught it in the wet, it could slip
:30:29. > :30:30.the wheels out from under you. Now that was interesting, because that
:30:31. > :30:36.was the inside line on the really technical Queen Mary 's trot from
:30:37. > :30:45.the young English rider, Barnes. -- Queen Mary 's drop. It shows the
:30:46. > :30:49.nation wants to close that gap to the bronze medal. If she can do that
:30:50. > :31:00.she will also be in contention for the silver. The gaps in significant,
:31:01. > :31:04.but if they take a conservative approach there are places through
:31:05. > :31:10.these segments, if Barnes is technical but brave. There are
:31:11. > :31:14.opportunities to close that gap on the podium positions.
:31:15. > :31:18.opportunities to close that gap on Here's the leader, Pendrel, who has
:31:19. > :31:32.pretty much lead from about half way round the first lap. She appeared at
:31:33. > :31:35.the front and really did accelerate away from the rest of them. This is
:31:36. > :31:37.Broken Biscuits. You can see that bike shifting around on the rocks. A
:31:38. > :31:41.foot down again. A quick recovery, or it is the first time we have seen
:31:42. > :31:43.her put her foot down. It shows she is quite calm. It is when you are
:31:44. > :31:52.under pressure that you make those mistakes and you can't get going
:31:53. > :32:00.again. If you get the wrong line through the Broken Biscuits, it can
:32:01. > :32:01.throw you all over the place. It is pretty difficult to find that at
:32:02. > :32:20.pace. She might get a chance to get
:32:21. > :32:28.another feed through this section. Here we see... What has happened
:32:29. > :32:31.here? She just slipped off one of those rocks. We did say there were a
:32:32. > :32:36.few drops of rain out there. If there has been a bit of a spit of
:32:37. > :32:44.rain, those large rocks get quite slippery. The front wheel came round
:32:45. > :32:46.at a bit of an angle as well. It is amazing to think much effort they
:32:47. > :32:49.have put into picking amazing to think much effort they
:32:50. > :32:53.through these sections. If you get the first little bit wrong, it can
:32:54. > :32:58.throw you off the next ten to 15 metres. They have been out there
:32:59. > :33:01.over an hour now, the riders, on this testing course. It is a figure
:33:02. > :33:08.of eight design, just about everything you come across in
:33:09. > :33:11.mountain biking, twisting past hairpin bends, plenty of tree roots
:33:12. > :33:22.out there as well, some awkward sense, 20 of climbing, and steep,
:33:23. > :33:27.sharp climbs as well. She has got away a bit here from Batty. We are
:33:28. > :33:35.not too far away from the section where Batty struggled in the last
:33:36. > :33:39.lap. That is right. We saw Beth Henderson was sitting very close to
:33:40. > :33:47.the wheel when she was behind Emily Batty in the first couple of laps.
:33:48. > :33:53.Back to the vision of Alice Barnes and the English team. Looks very
:33:54. > :33:58.similar to the road rider Anna Barnes, her older sister. Huge
:33:59. > :34:02.similar to the road rider Anna talent in this family. Still very
:34:03. > 0:11:46young.
