:00:00. > :00:00.straight to the event itself. It is the men's cross-country. This is
:00:00. > :00:22.what is happening. Over to the commentators.
:00:23. > :00:28.COMMENTATOR: The weather does not know what to do here in Glasgow,
:00:29. > :00:32.bright and sunny yesterday but today was the result to start then some
:00:33. > :00:40.sunshine and one thing that has remained consistent is the windy
:00:41. > :00:45.conditions. As you can see, significantly cooler than yesterday.
:00:46. > :00:54.When the riders were taking on this course in training. It is been
:00:55. > :00:59.fairly chilly as well. Some drizzle. Hopefully for this race the drizzle
:01:00. > :01:01.will stay away because the course could become a little bit
:01:02. > :01:11.treacherous given the amount of slate and rock on this very tricky
:01:12. > :01:17.but extremely quick course. The Commonwealth flags, you can see how
:01:18. > :01:20.wildly the wind is blowing. A number of horrible balls that could affect
:01:21. > :01:25.the riders as they make their way around the Cathkin Braes course. The
:01:26. > :01:38.stars lad has an extra 800 metres. In total it is 5.2 km after the
:01:39. > :01:43.first lap. Seven laps of this track, taking them up to just under 40 km.
:01:44. > :01:48.Broken Biscuits one of the significant segments, the Queen Mary
:01:49. > :02:07.'s drop and Braveheart is where it starts to get technical. The
:02:08. > :02:10.majority of this course on a fairly slaty bed. Liam Killeen the only
:02:11. > :02:15.rider who has previously got a medal in this, he is the defending
:02:16. > :02:21.champion given this race did not happen in 2010. He took the gold
:02:22. > :02:25.medal in 2006. Killeen hopeful of retaining that Crown for England.
:02:26. > :02:33.medal in 2006. Killeen hopeful of retaining that Paul Oldham another
:02:34. > :02:36.English rider in there. Cameron Ivory and Andy Blair representing
:02:37. > :02:42.Australia. As we go further down the list. Kenta Gallagher one of the
:02:43. > :03:24.36 riders taking part in the men's cross-country mountain biking. We
:03:25. > :03:31.see the South African, the two Canadian riders, Grant Ferguson of
:03:32. > :03:42.Scotland on the second line, with Paul Oldham of England. The two
:03:43. > :03:45.Australian rioters, camera and cat Mac ivory and Andy Blair making up
:03:46. > :03:49.the second line. Mac ivory and Andy Blair making up
:03:50. > :03:55.the second Realistically it is likely to come from the first two
:03:56. > :04:21.lines, where you will find your winner. -- Cameron Ivory. There is
:04:22. > :04:25.the defending champion, Killeen. Remember, we have the 800 metres
:04:26. > :04:37.loop to try and spread the riders out before we set to only seven laps
:04:38. > :04:46.of the race. We kid really see a competitive race here. -- we could.
:04:47. > :04:50.I am very excited about the mountain bike race, I walked around the
:04:51. > :04:56.course yesterday, there are a lot of technical sections, they say it is
:04:57. > :05:02.not one the most difficult, but we found it technical. It was technical
:05:03. > :05:03.enough for us in our trainers, such is
:05:04. > :05:07.enough for us in our trainers, such the high level of these riders.
:05:08. > :05:16.Daniel McDonnell is ranked number four in the world rankings. The wind
:05:17. > :05:24.is whipping around our commentary position. I had to do a flying save
:05:25. > :05:31.just to keep my notes in place. After around half a lap, you tend to
:05:32. > :05:36.get, what we will see for the remainder of the race. That is the
:05:37. > :05:45.South African rider, number three, leading the way from the New
:05:46. > :05:49.Zealander, Cooper. Very important to get off the start line into
:05:50. > :06:06.position, they only had a short section before it goes into
:06:07. > :06:18.single-track. Byers, the South African, he is the African champion,
:06:19. > :06:27.very tall, six foot, two. We are on the big circuit now. The first big
:06:28. > :06:32.drops appear when we get towards Propeller Point, the feeding
:06:33. > :06:39.station. Not significant on the first lap, it will as time goes on.
:06:40. > :06:45.You can see how narrow the track is, not too many places to get past your
:06:46. > :06:49.competitors. Most of the overtaking happens on the climbs. The
:06:50. > :06:54.significance of the course, they have sections with two or three
:06:55. > :07:00.options, one being more technical than others. This is the first
:07:01. > :07:06.drop-down. The camera does not do it justice. It is quite steep. The
:07:07. > :07:17.first technical section we walked over, thinking it was speak. When we
:07:18. > :07:24.got round to Braveheart, we thought that was just a starting point. The
:07:25. > :07:39.South African, Byers leading the way from Cooper, the New Zealander, and
:07:40. > :07:45.Plaxton, the Canadian in third. The Canadians have a great record in
:07:46. > :07:47.cross-country mountain biking. They won the first-ever gold in
:07:48. > :07:56.Manchester at the Commonwealth Games. It was the English dominating
:07:57. > :08:05.four years later, with Killeen and Beckett. The wonderful views of the
:08:06. > :08:13.city of Glasgow, the riders not yet half way round, but the field
:08:14. > :08:26.beginning to spread out. McDonnell, one of the prerace favourites in
:08:27. > :08:31.fifth place. Killeen down in ninth. This is the leader, Buys, 53rd in
:08:32. > :08:36.the World Championships last September. Very much hoping to be in
:08:37. > :08:50.the mix-up when it comes to the medals here. Already they have made
:08:51. > :08:55.it down to your favourite section, Double Der. This is a thrilling
:08:56. > :09:02.section, I would love to ride this myself. They tend to crossover. One
:09:03. > :09:09.of the New Zealanders, the Australian. A popular place for
:09:10. > :09:20.crossing over. Still Buys leading the way, as we stand. Cooper taking
:09:21. > :09:30.some water on board already. Just sitting behind the leader. Plaxton
:09:31. > :09:37.in there. Those are your leaders. Five riders who seem to have broken
:09:38. > :09:44.away. Daniel McConnell, the Australian is one of them.
:09:45. > :09:51.28-year-old from Melbourne, competing at the 2008 Olympics in
:09:52. > :10:02.Beijing, the highest ranked rider in the field. Buys has made a good
:10:03. > :10:07.start, holding onto the lead. Seven riders staying in touch of the
:10:08. > :10:14.leading group. Coming into today, Daniel McConnell one of the
:10:15. > :10:19.favourites alongside Killeen, they should be some of the riders in
:10:20. > :10:23.their once they sort it all out. These riders have broken away from
:10:24. > :10:31.the rest of the pellets on. I am not sure I can see Killeen in there,
:10:32. > :10:36.that group of seven riders. We are led to believe he is in ninth place,
:10:37. > :10:44.the defending champion from eight years ago. Dominating the
:10:45. > :10:50.cross-country scene between 2008-2012 before losing to Grant
:10:51. > :10:58.Ferguson here in 2013. There has been a big question mark over the
:10:59. > :11:04.form of Liam Killeen. The two New Zealand riders going quite well.
:11:05. > :11:12.Cooper is up there, Buys, there is number nine, Liam Killeen. No, that
:11:13. > :11:24.is Paul Oldham. Killeen is wearing number one. Paul Oldham ranked 119,
:11:25. > :11:30.36 years of age. He was for one year ago at the British Championships.
:11:31. > :11:34.That is not necessarily a significant advantage for the
:11:35. > :11:39.British riders, this course is very different from one year ago.
:11:40. > :11:46.Australian riders going through hair. That was Andy Blair, and
:11:47. > :11:59.Cameron Ivory. That is interesting, this is the
:12:00. > :12:05.Queen Mary Drop, the majority taking the tough inside route. It is the
:12:06. > :12:12.top circular bit that is really difficult. That is the tricky part
:12:13. > :12:17.of the three options. If you start from the top, the middle looks too
:12:18. > :12:23.difficult to navigate. Once you get past the first section, the middle
:12:24. > :12:26.section is easier. We have seen riders taking the inside line, the
:12:27. > :12:35.shortest line, perhaps the most difficult. It has developed into a
:12:36. > :12:37.pretty tight race, plenty of riders in contention at the front from the
:12:38. > :13:03.first couple of lines. Buys getting off to a terrific
:13:04. > :13:15.start. This is Cooper and Gayes, now leading the way.
:13:16. > :13:18.start. This is Cooper and Gayes, now from New Zealand, Buys from South
:13:19. > :13:24.Africa slipping into third. A significant move from the Kiwis?
:13:25. > :13:28.They are sticking together riding quite comfortably, getting a lead.
:13:29. > :13:38.Applying pressure at the start of the race, interesting tactic, it is
:13:39. > :13:43.a long race. Going quite hard. Philip Buys made a fabulous start,
:13:44. > :13:51.the two New Zealanders can work together. There were seven riders in
:13:52. > :13:57.the leading group, the New Zealanders have accelerated away
:13:58. > :13:59.from nowhere. Opening up a significant gap between themselves
:14:00. > :14:07.and Philip Buys, leading the chasing pack. New Zealand and nation who
:14:08. > :14:12.have never medals before in the men's cross-country mountain
:14:13. > :14:17.biking, only Canada and England have won medals. This could be a
:14:18. > :14:23.significant move for the New Zealanders. This is the key moment,
:14:24. > :14:31.Philip Buys leading the way, this is where the New Zealand pair came
:14:32. > :14:39.through. Cooper and Gayes. He tried to respond, Buys. He gets taken by
:14:40. > :14:49.the second rider as well. I'm able to respond, Cooper coming through
:14:50. > :14:56.and taking advantage. The eight senior roles, Gayes, looking in
:14:57. > :15:06.control, setting the pace. New Zealand mean business here. It has
:15:07. > :15:14.been a really bright start from the New Zealanders, Cooper and Gayes.
:15:15. > :15:26.Two seconds between them and the second group,.
:15:27. > :15:44.Interesting to see if this is a tactic from the New Zealanders,
:15:45. > :15:47.Cooper ranked 28, and Gayes 31st. It was not a good start for the
:15:48. > :15:56.defending gold medal champion, Killeen. The set African, Buys
:15:57. > :16:00.getting off to a great start. The two New Zealanders have since gone
:16:01. > :16:06.past them. It is surprising how much ground you can lose getting a slow
:16:07. > :16:13.start. Killeen did not get going. It was a different start, interesting
:16:14. > :16:19.to see if he makes his way back up to the leaders. The New Zealanders
:16:20. > :16:28.are applying pressure. They are coming through to Brigadoon, over to
:16:29. > :16:43.Balderdash. It gets more technical to the Queen Mary Drop. For. This is
:16:44. > :16:53.the leader, the Kiwi rider, Samuel Gaze, just 18, ranked 78th. Does a
:16:54. > :17:02.lot of his trading on a road bike, that is interesting. First place at
:17:03. > :17:07.the World Cup in Cairns. Interesting how the cardio crossover can work
:17:08. > :17:14.between road and mountain bikes. We have seen a lot of good mountain
:17:15. > :17:18.bikers train on the road. Very hard. There is no time for rest on this
:17:19. > :17:24.course, it took us about three hours. I think the men will do it in
:17:25. > :17:28.about 40 minutes. We checked out all the technical parts of the course.
:17:29. > :17:34.Watching some of these athletes picking their lines, stopping to
:17:35. > :17:38.discuss the best lines to take. Their equipment and where they will
:17:39. > :17:43.apply the pressure. The New Zealanders have gone out hard,
:17:44. > :17:49.looking comfortable, in control. Two riders who made the switch from
:17:50. > :17:57.mountain and road biking, Cadel Evans and Chris Frome. He took part
:17:58. > :18:11.in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, finishing 26, representing Ken yet.
:18:12. > :18:18.Now a Tour de France winner. -- ten. He won five races at three levels in
:18:19. > :18:23.2014, the World Cup when, that I was talking about in Cairns, that was
:18:24. > :18:24.the highlight for him. He may be a teenager but he has shown
:18:25. > :18:28.significant teenager but he has shown
:18:29. > :18:35.World Cup and international level. Leading the way here. He has really
:18:36. > :18:38.run down the two New Zealanders and the Canadian has got himself right
:18:39. > :18:43.back into contention in the leading group of three. He looks comfortable
:18:44. > :18:48.sitting on the back of the New Zealanders, there. We saw him taking
:18:49. > :18:54.a drink, he is thinking about later in the race, it is important to get
:18:55. > :18:58.fluid on board early. Lots of people wait until they are thirsty but it
:18:59. > :19:04.is important to get in the fluid early in the race when you are
:19:05. > :19:09.thinking about the business end. Gaze and Cooper from New Zealand and
:19:10. > :19:15.the Canadian in there as well. He is ranked 51 in the world, 29 years of
:19:16. > :19:21.age. He Sykes himself up by listening to iron maiden before
:19:22. > :19:26.every race. He cites Wayne Gretzky as his sporting hero. He was third
:19:27. > :19:29.at the Canadian championships last year. He has taken the lead from the
:19:30. > :19:34.New Zealanders as we crossed the finish for the first time. He has a
:19:35. > :19:46.strong track record in the mountain bike events. The second group coming
:19:47. > :19:50.in behind. Montgomery and Ferguson getting a big cheer, the Scottish
:19:51. > :20:00.riders. Philip Buys has dropped into sixth place. Killeen knows that he
:20:01. > :20:06.has a lot of work to do to get himself onto the podium from third
:20:07. > :20:16.successive Commonwealth Games. -- for a third. So, the first lab has
:20:17. > :20:25.been completed, those are the top 12. Plaxton has ruined the party for
:20:26. > :20:31.the Kiwis. Their game plan was to get a significant gap. We can see
:20:32. > :20:35.the three behind the leading three, Scottish riders and the Australian,
:20:36. > :20:42.closing the gap. We may see a group of six coming together in a moment.
:20:43. > :20:49.Down towards Propeller Point, the first significant drop on the
:20:50. > :20:53.course. The wind is whipping up around the commentary position and I
:20:54. > :21:02.can feel some spots of rain again which could make it more interesting
:21:03. > :21:05.given the amount of slee the areas on the course, particularly on Queen
:21:06. > :21:15.Mary's Drop, dropping from cobbles onto cobbles. Plaxton Cooper and
:21:16. > :21:20.Gaze are the front three. The weather has taken a turn for the
:21:21. > :21:24.worse. The trees are nearly blowing over. The bad weather is rolling in
:21:25. > :21:30.with black clouds everywhere, we could see heavy rain on the way.
:21:31. > :21:42.Cooper in front from Plaxton and Gaze is in third. Liam Killeen at
:21:43. > :21:52.the moment is nowhere to be seen, the English rider who got a podium
:21:53. > :21:57.in 2002 and 2006. A bronze and gold. There is now a significant gap.
:21:58. > :22:01.Plaxton is fending off the challenge of the two New Zealanders, Cooper
:22:02. > :22:04.and Gaze, they are looking to get a medal for the first time in
:22:05. > :22:09.cross-country mountain biking for New Zealand at the Commonwealth
:22:10. > :22:14.Games. These three riders are taking turns to take on the head of the
:22:15. > :22:18.group. Anton Cooper out in front for New Zealand, setting the pace. He
:22:19. > :22:25.has had a disrupted year with illness. He rides for Cannondale
:22:26. > :22:42.factory racing. Only 19 years of age. This is my favourite section of
:22:43. > :22:48.the course. Plaxton edging off Gaze at the moment. Cooper is in the
:22:49. > :22:56.lead. If this weather continues it is going to get significantly slippy
:22:57. > :23:00.out there. You can see the aerial view of the Double Dare, hitting the
:23:01. > :23:06.flat section. You can get a beautiful view of the City from this
:23:07. > :23:13.section of the course. Glasgow City. Terrible news for the Northern Irish
:23:14. > :23:18.today, Aitken has picked up a puncture going down Braveheart.
:23:19. > :23:23.Roger Aitken as a puncture. And I can tell you that there is an awful
:23:24. > :23:33.long way to go to the maintenance area. It is a front flat tyre for
:23:34. > :23:40.Aitken. That is really bad luck for the rider from Northern Ireland. It
:23:41. > :23:44.is bad enough trying to drag a rear flat around but it is significantly
:23:45. > :23:49.harder to control the bike when the front is flat as a pancake which it
:23:50. > :23:51.is therefore Aitken. The first real mechanical problem we have seen for
:23:52. > :23:54.any of the riders on the mechanical problem we have seen for
:23:55. > :24:05.you can see that visibility is getting much less now as the weather
:24:06. > :24:08.draws in. -- for. The wind is certainly blowing, the tents are
:24:09. > :24:16.blowing over everywhere. It is getting more challenging to the
:24:17. > :24:18.competitors. -- for the competitors. Some of the spectators are
:24:19. > :24:24.desperately trying to use their umbrellas for shelter. Yesterday it
:24:25. > :24:28.was a glorious day in Glasgow, I am sure that one or two of the locals
:24:29. > :24:31.will agree that this is a return to the normal weather conditions. There
:24:32. > :24:37.is always a danger of course of this taking place. The riders will have
:24:38. > :24:41.to cope with it of course, the wind and rain, in those segments where
:24:42. > :24:53.the wind is a headwind, it will make it significantly tougher. This is
:24:54. > :24:58.Plaxton who is still leading the way, the Canadian. You can see from
:24:59. > :25:03.the camera, the way that the weather is really causing problems. The
:25:04. > :25:11.Australian Dan McConnell is making his way back to the leaders. Not a
:25:12. > :25:14.great start but he is still one of the favourites in this rates. He is
:25:15. > :25:21.still one of the favourites in this rates. He's working his way back
:25:22. > :25:25.into contention. The Scottish rider wearing 16, Gareth Montgomerie, he
:25:26. > :25:29.attempted to qualify for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in road cycling
:25:30. > :25:33.because mountain biking was not part of it. This is where it can get
:25:34. > :25:39.sketchy, the cobbles. The leaders are making short work of that. The
:25:40. > :25:45.three leaders took the inside, the most technical option on the Queen
:25:46. > :25:50.Mary's Drop. The Australian took the safest way around. If he is on
:25:51. > :25:58.format the Commonwealth Games he may be able to close the gap to get
:25:59. > :26:02.among the race. It is taking a gamble to drop down on the cobbles
:26:03. > :26:06.in these conditions but McConnell is now chasing down the group and the
:26:07. > :26:10.gap is getting smaller. It looks as though he will get onto the back of
:26:11. > :26:18.the group of three by the end of the lap. Yes, there is the gap that you
:26:19. > :26:21.can see, it still looks like a sizeable one but it is significantly
:26:22. > :26:40.smaller than it was a few moments ago. Plaxton the Canadian is
:26:41. > :26:45.leading. And the two New Zealanders. Plaxton is leading. The New
:26:46. > :26:53.Zealanders, though, are chasing him down. They can work together here
:26:54. > :27:02.just to try to beat Plaxton, they will be eyeing up a potential
:27:03. > :27:11.one-two. Plaxton will be looking to keep that tremendous Canadian record
:27:12. > :27:15.intact. Roman Green of Canada when the first ever mountain bike medal
:27:16. > :27:22.in 2002. The Canadian women have won the gold medal every time. When we
:27:23. > :27:26.were out on the course yesterday we thought that some of the technical
:27:27. > :27:33.parts were really nail-biting. And very difficult sections. But on the
:27:34. > :27:37.world mountain bike level, this is quite an easy course. I do not think
:27:38. > :27:44.easy is the word to describe it but it is more of a road riders type of
:27:45. > :27:50.course. The technical parts are not as challenging as some of them. The
:27:51. > :27:56.course of course was designed by one of the UCI's designers of courses.
:27:57. > :28:00.That is his full-time job. He travels around the world to design
:28:01. > :28:07.the courses. Lots of people are very happy with the circuit. It is up and
:28:08. > :28:13.down the whole time. A beautiful location on the side of a mountain
:28:14. > :28:17.which looks down on Glasgow City. Plaxton is leading the way. He is
:28:18. > :28:24.just ahead of the New Zealand Cooper and you can see he is riding on the
:28:25. > :28:28.lefty front fork. It always gets a few special locks. It is designed to
:28:29. > :28:36.keep the weight down. A single front fork. It has been described by some
:28:37. > :28:43.riders as the best suspension they have ever made. Speaking to some of
:28:44. > :28:47.the mechanics before the race, they were talking about Dan McConnell's
:28:48. > :28:52.bike, saying that he is one of the few using electronic gears. There
:28:53. > :28:55.may be more but we were told that he was one of the few that chooses to
:28:56. > :29:02.ride on the new electronic gears. By Shimano. It is amazing how the
:29:03. > :29:06.mechanics of bikes are beginning to change, disc brakes on road bikes
:29:07. > :29:12.and electric gears on mountain bikes and road bikes. We have been on

:47:10. > :47:13.and Plaxton salmon during the Kiwis. McConnell has spent a lot of time at
:47:14. > :47:21.the front, interesting to see if he slips back for a while, taking a
:47:22. > :47:29.rest. Just taking a drink, I am quite amazed how much they drink in
:47:30. > :47:39.a two .5 hour race. Asking each other to do a bit of work, share it

:47:49. > :47:53.see the clock ticking away. It was 53 seconds at the last checked. I
:47:54. > :48:03.don't think he's made a lot of inroads into the gap. -- at the last

:48:16. > :48:19.will compete for the medals. He said he was getting used to the big
:48:20. > :48:23.crowds of the World Cups. All the attention around the mountain bike
:48:24. > :48:27.scene of the world level, let's see if he is motivated by this crowd,
:48:28. > :48:38.they are going crazy Eddie goes past the start and finish line. Plenty of
:48:39. > :48:44.support for him and Montgomerie. In terms of time they are way off the
:48:45. > :48:46.leading group of the Australian, the Canadian and the two New Zealanders.
:48:47. > :48:53.They are looking to dominate the race. Three and a bit laps have been
:48:54. > :48:56.done so far. There is still an awful long way to go for these four
:48:57. > :49:02.riders. There is plenty that can happen. In cross-country mountain
:49:03. > :49:12.biking in terms of the variables, a mistake, concentration, and
:49:13. > :49:16.mechanical issues. We were amazed to hear the rules of the mechanical
:49:17. > :49:19.mishaps, when you pass the mechanical station, there is only
:49:20. > :49:27.one on the course, if you have passed it you need to continue with
:49:28. > :49:31.your problem around the course until you can get mechanical assistance
:49:32. > :49:38.but if you pass the tent, you cannot turn around and go back. A
:49:39. > :49:42.retirement for the Kenyan man. We have seen one or two of the lower
:49:43. > :49:54.ranked riders struggling. The race is over for Kabiro who has fallen
:49:55. > :50:03.foul of the 80% time rule. It is harsh on the lower ranked riders.
:50:04. > :50:10.They cannot afford to have a lapping situation which could cause problems
:50:11. > :50:13.for the leading riders. They are on Double Dare, the section of the
:50:14. > :50:17.course where the design of the circuit has designed this part of
:50:18. > :50:23.the course, so there are two lanes that you can take, both of equal
:50:24. > :50:27.speed. He has designed it to make them equal speed all the way to the
:50:28. > :50:30.bottom. They will have an opportunity to pass each other. We
:50:31. > :50:37.have not seen much passing on that particular. We have a significant
:50:38. > :50:41.gap between the leading two. Plaxton, the Canadian, was in fourth
:50:42. > :50:46.place for the majority of the previous lap and a half but he has
:50:47. > :50:52.certainly taken up the pace. Here is Ferguson of Scotland. A great
:50:53. > :50:55.incentive of him to keep going matter how tired he feels, the
:50:56. > :51:03.adrenaline will kick in when he hears the roar of the home support.
:51:04. > :51:09.He has had a good couple of years domestically in terms of the British
:51:10. > :51:13.cross-country Championships, Liam Carling who has been the dominant
:51:14. > :51:17.force in British cross-country. He is ahead of the British rider but
:51:18. > :51:27.still a long way off the leading four. The hopes for Scotland are
:51:28. > :51:30.fading, but if Ferguson and Montgomery can stay in there and
:51:31. > :51:33.there is a mishap among the leading group then you never know because
:51:34. > :51:39.there is a long way to go. Just over half way around the course. There is
:51:40. > :51:55.Gareth Montgomerie, the team-mate of Ferguson. 31 years of age. And there
:51:56. > :51:59.is Paul Oldham, the English rider, the 36-year-old from Burnley. He
:52:00. > :52:04.made the podium at the British cross-country Championships ten days
:52:05. > :52:12.ago, he rides for Hove factory racing. He has agonising memories of
:52:13. > :52:14.Cathkin Braes. Just missing out at the British championships before
:52:15. > :52:20.going one better and we can half ago. Plaxton is still on the front
:52:21. > :52:30.of the leading four, driving the pace. He raced into thousand ace --
:52:31. > :52:33.in 2008. He could not finish the race because of a knee injury. He
:52:34. > :52:40.looks quite comfortable the front today. He has completed the majority
:52:41. > :52:52.of this lap on the front. Plaxton from Cooper. Gaze very much attached
:52:53. > :52:57.to the leading four. It must be motivating to the New Zealanders do
:52:58. > :53:00.have two of them there, always do have a team-mate to communicate with
:53:01. > :53:04.and motivate each other. Obviously they have spent some time together
:53:05. > :53:06.so they know each other's capabilities. It must be quite
:53:07. > :53:13.comforting to have your team-mate there. McConnell does not fancy
:53:14. > :53:22.that, he has gone on the outside every time. He has edged into third
:53:23. > :53:31.ahead of the New Zealander Gaze. Now Plaxton. It is interesting, there is
:53:32. > :53:36.three choices but we rarely see anyone take the bigger one. When you
:53:37. > :53:41.come to the entry of the three options, it is very difficult and it
:53:42. > :53:44.gets easier after the first bit. In the middle one. But it is quite
:53:45. > :53:48.intimidating when you are approaching it. You can see how
:53:49. > :53:52.rough the middle option is and nobody likes to take it. It is just
:53:53. > :53:56.too dangerous. You lose your momentum at the start of the drop.
:53:57. > :54:02.On the inside you have the cobbles and on the cobbles it is the
:54:03. > :54:05.quickest, shortest route, but it is potentially more dangerous than
:54:06. > :54:15.going on the outside route which done McConnell has taken every lap.
:54:16. > :54:20.It has not done him any harm because he is right in there, McConnell.
:54:21. > :54:24.This is turning into an interesting race, if they can stay together for
:54:25. > :54:34.the final lap this could be one of the most memorable mountain bike
:54:35. > :54:37.races in the Commonwealth Games. The smallest winning margin in the
:54:38. > :54:43.Commonwealth Games mountain bike race is 15 seconds when Ollie
:54:44. > :54:54.Beckinsale was beaten into thousand six. -- in 2006. These riders will
:54:55. > :54:59.probably wait until towards the end of the final lap to make a
:55:00. > :55:02.significant move on the other three. Here is Plaxton putting in most of
:55:03. > :55:06.the work at the moment, leading them through with Cooper in second place,
:55:07. > :55:12.McConnell in third and Gaze in fourth. There could be a bit of
:55:13. > :55:15.bluffing with the facial expressions here as well, they
:55:16. > :55:20.bluffing with the facial expressions to think they are suffering or not
:55:21. > :55:23.being so comfortable. to think they are suffering or not
:55:24. > :55:31.happen at any moment, these are the to think they are suffering or not
:55:32. > :55:32.four that are in with a chance. Plaxton is leading them through
:55:33. > :55:41.coming you can see how close they are in the wooded area. They are
:55:42. > :55:45.taking turns at the front of the group. Plaxton is getting out of the
:55:46. > :55:51.saddle for a second to increase the cadence as he went through. Of
:55:52. > :56:00.course a lot of mountain biking is to do with the significant cadence
:56:01. > :56:04.on those climbs to get the bike up there. This is Ferguson of
:56:05. > :56:09.Scotland, the best of the rest at the moment outside of the leading
:56:10. > :56:13.four. Scotland are one of the countries that have started this
:56:14. > :56:19.race with three men. That is the maximum capacity that you can have
:56:20. > :56:23.in a mountain bike race. Along with the countries Kenya, Jersey and
:56:24. > :56:27.Australia. Those are the four countries that have entered three
:56:28. > :56:39.and that is the maximum number. All of the other countries have two or
:56:40. > :56:42.one rider representing them. The gap between Samuel Gaze and Grant
:56:43. > :56:58.Ferguson is significant. Around one minute at the last time split. They
:56:59. > :57:01.have gone past the food section. Khumalo from Swaziland was
:57:02. > :57:07.struggling, we saw him being signalled off the track because he
:57:08. > :57:12.was below the 80% which is allowed. He is the rider that is off course.
:57:13. > :57:20.The problem here as well, is that the Kenyan rider came off the
:57:21. > :57:24.pedals. Causing a problem for the rider behind him and he clearly does
:57:25. > :57:34.seem to be struggling, the Kenyan rider. I am no doubt -- I have no
:57:35. > :57:43.doubt we will see him called off the race. That is what we have seen.
:57:44. > :57:50.Plaxton from Cooper and McConnell and Gaze. That is the leading group.
:57:51. > :57:58.They are cheering Ferguson, the Scottish rider in fifth place. One
:57:59. > :58:02.minute and 25 seconds off the pace from Plaxton. The gap is getting
:58:03. > :58:08.bigger between the leading four and the chasing Ferguson. These four are
:58:09. > :58:14.potentially in the medals, gold, silver and bronze. It is still a
:58:15. > :58:18.long way to the finish, but you suspect as we did before the race
:58:19. > :58:28.started that these four will be in contention. Plaxton has spent a lot
:58:29. > :58:33.of time out in front. Yes, back in fourth place for the large majority
:58:34. > :58:39.of the second and third laps but he is setting the pace here now. Really
:58:40. > :58:43.testing Gaze, McConnell and Cooper. The riders who are with him. Seeing
:58:44. > :58:53.what they have left in the tank. As they make a tight turn around the
:58:54. > :58:55.tree towards the Brig O'Doom. And of course there is Boulder Dash still
:58:56. > :58:58.to come. For riders course there is Boulder Dash still
:58:59. > :59:11.it is a straightforward role through on those 29 inch tyres. -- roll
:59:12. > :59:23.through. Plaxton, then, from Cooper. Done McConnell just taking a drink
:59:24. > :59:28.there. -- Daniel McConnell. Paul Oldham, the English rider. Going
:59:29. > :59:33.through on Broken Biscuits. He has fallen off the course. He has to
:59:34. > :59:37.re-enter exactly where he fell out. Again, a flat section in terms of
:59:38. > :59:43.gradient but the Broken Biscuits can cause all kinds of problems.
:59:44. > :59:47.Thankfully no broken limbs so far. It is a difficult part of the
:59:48. > :59:50.circuit, lots of the riders are trying to pick their lines but it is
:59:51. > :59:54.one of those things where you have do hope that the best because there
:59:55. > :59:59.is no good line with rocks all over the place and there is no little
:00:00. > :00:07.break to find a smooth run through. And of course the pace of these
:00:08. > :00:12.riders, heading in around 23 K pH, and if you get anything wrong at
:00:13. > :00:17.that pace you are going to hit the deck. Thankfully the 26 old Paul
:00:18. > :00:20.Oldham was OK. The four leading riders are changing position,
:00:21. > :00:26.different riders having some time out in front. Plaxton just robbing
:00:27. > :00:32.back to fourth place now. No doubt there is a discussion going on as
:00:33. > :00:37.can happen on the road. Plaxton saying, somebody else give it a go.
:00:38. > :00:41.That is what Cooper has done. Anton Cooper from Christchurch in New
:00:42. > :00:49.Zealand. Taking the lead. The under-19s world champion in 2012 in
:00:50. > :00:53.Australia, the New Zealand mountain biker of the year in 2012. Still
:00:54. > :00:58.only 19. A great future ahead of him. A great future ahead of him to
:00:59. > :01:06.claim the gold medal in the cross-country mountain biking. Gaze
:01:07. > :01:11.taking them across the line with three laps to go. 23 kilometres per
:01:12. > :01:17.hour, the average speed of these riders as we approach the hour mark.
:01:18. > :01:22.As they came across the start finish line we saw Gaze pouring water down
:01:23. > :01:25.his back and front. It does not feel to world where we are sitting but
:01:26. > :01:33.perhaps he wants to keep his core temperature cooled to use less
:01:34. > :01:40.energy to go himself down. He has been feeling the heat out there. A
:01:41. > :01:43.bit of a battle going on with the elements, some of the sunshine is
:01:44. > :01:46.trying to break through the significant grey cloud up above,
:01:47. > :01:51.let's hope that the sunshine wins the day. At the moment this is the
:01:52. > :01:54.leading four. Certainly the rain has gone off now, the drizzle which was
:01:55. > :01:58.threatening to make it awfully difficult in those rocky segments
:01:59. > :02:02.for these riders. Given the wind conditions when we have a slight
:02:03. > :02:08.smattering of rain it dries out pretty quickly as you can see from
:02:09. > :02:11.the dust that is being thrown up. The leading four, this is developing
:02:12. > :02:15.into a terrific race. It is a long way back to fifth placed Grant
:02:16. > :02:22.Ferguson, the 20-year-old Scottish rider. Ranked 69 in the UCI world
:02:23. > :02:32.rankings, heading towards the start finish line. It is a terrific
:02:33. > :02:42.atmosphere, here, where the majority of the spectators are placed. Extra
:02:43. > :02:52.bit of gusto when they're wearing the blue and white of Scotland. It
:02:53. > :02:58.has been a day to forget for Liam Killeen, do take a miracle for the
:02:59. > :03:05.32-year-old English rider to get a medal this time. -- it will take. He
:03:06. > :03:12.was looking for his third successive medal. He was not on the original
:03:13. > :03:19.build-up start list, a rather late entry, we were surprised to see him
:03:20. > :03:28.on the list. A big-name, and very late entry. He has only raced three
:03:29. > :03:32.races since 2012, and the Olympics. He has not really got the racing in
:03:33. > :03:40.his legs. Perhaps this is the start of his preparation for Rio. There
:03:41. > :03:47.was talk about him claiming a third medal, but privately he must've
:03:48. > :03:52.realised he will not in contention. That often happens when athletes
:03:53. > :04:00.know what their body has been through, the general public are not
:04:01. > :04:04.aware of what they go through, so they don't have a realistic
:04:05. > :04:09.expectation. He may be happy with his performance, and the start of
:04:10. > :04:18.his comeback in preparation for the next Olympics. So very much a four
:04:19. > :04:25.man race for gold in the men's cross-country mountain biking.
:04:26. > :04:34.McConnell is back on the front. Had a forgettable World Championships,
:04:35. > :04:46.but his form in Australia has been good. In terms of rankings, he is
:04:47. > :04:51.fourth in the UCI rankings. Just a second between the front four.
:04:52. > :05:02.Ferguson is a minute and a half back. Killeen over two minutes back.
:05:03. > :05:09.Another retirement, Robert Barnes, who took a heavy fall. He was really
:05:10. > :05:19.struggling, mightily disappointed. He is out. The 48-year-old, born in
:05:20. > :05:27.Chelsea, England, competing in the men's's Road race. 48 years old,
:05:28. > :05:33.competing, that is worth a medal in itself. The Scottish rider getting
:05:34. > :05:38.unbelievable support from the local supporters, when he comes past the
:05:39. > :05:48.start line, we get a deafening roar from the crowd. He is sticking with
:05:49. > :05:54.it, he knows there is an almighty gap, and he knows that Killeen may
:05:55. > :06:01.gain from sixth, the experienced rider. As I said at the start, the
:06:02. > :06:09.only rider competing in the men or women's Gracie has previously won a
:06:10. > :06:14.medal, eight years ago. It looks like Plaxton could be in trouble,
:06:15. > :06:17.moving his body over like Plaxton could be in trouble,
:06:18. > :06:27.handlebars, losing a bit of contact from the front three. Perhaps
:06:28. > :06:32.McConnell is lifting the pace? The 20 H Road is the partner of Beth
:06:33. > :06:44.Henderson, one of the stronger riders in the women's event.
:06:45. > :06:50.Australia's mountain biking couple. McConnell has a much higher ranking
:06:51. > :07:00.than any of these riders, Samuel Gaze in 78 place, Plaxton is 51,
:07:01. > :07:06.Cooper is further down, and is an U19 champion. It depends on the
:07:07. > :07:18.number of races they have competed in. Which side will Plaxton take?
:07:19. > :07:30.The inside. He has been dropped, going to have to work hard to close
:07:31. > :07:37.the gap. A touch of hesitancy, a little bit of travel on the front
:07:38. > :07:41.wheel as he decided to go. That hesitancy has cost him a few
:07:42. > :07:46.seconds, work to do, which could beat the Vixens if he uses up excess
:07:47. > :07:51.energy trying to get back on the trail. Could have been a mental
:07:52. > :07:59.lapse of concentration, very difficult to get back. In a section
:08:00. > :08:05.like this, if he was strong enough, he should have been able to make it
:08:06. > :08:12.back. Building up a lot of speed, he may feel he does not get back now,
:08:13. > :08:19.he may not see those riders again. He has certainly upped his cadence
:08:20. > :08:27.levels. I think he is closing the gap. Looking like he has put in a
:08:28. > :08:36.lot of effort, back in the race for the medals. Four very nearly became
:08:37. > :08:42.three, Max Plaxton doing well to work himself back into contention.
:08:43. > :08:48.Looking like he was comfortable, may have been a lapse in concentration.
:08:49. > :08:58.We saw the hesitation at Queen Mary's Drop. Mountain biking unlike
:08:59. > :09:00.road racing, requires 100% concentration the whole time,
:09:01. > :09:09.pressure on the pedals the whole time. Not many very moments in the
:09:10. > :09:15.course to relax. He has just last contact again, physically he may be
:09:16. > :09:26.in trouble. It is OK working hard, but if it takes more out of you...
:09:27. > :09:35.Just out of his seat, stretching his back. Possible he's having back
:09:36. > :09:41.trouble. Still it remains a four horse race, a real danger of it
:09:42. > :09:46.becoming a three horse race, would be agonising for Max Plaxton. The
:09:47. > :09:52.two New Zealanders holding on, they have been there right from the
:09:53. > :09:53.start. McConnell making a significant move after a fairly
:09:54. > :10:02.conservative start. It looks to significant move after a fairly
:10:03. > :10:09.as if Max Plaxton is in trouble. Looking like he's struggling on the
:10:10. > :10:10.technical sections. Maybe he is having a relaxing period, trying to
:10:11. > :10:21.take a few deep breaths. Over the top of the tunnel section,
:10:22. > :10:32.this is where the figure of eight crosses over. McConnell is leading,
:10:33. > :10:41.one hour and six minutes, Cooper and Gaze behind, Max Plaxton further
:10:42. > :10:50.back. Grant Ferguson, the local Scottish rider still holding on to
:10:51. > :10:58.fifth place. Plenty of Saint Andrews flags around the course. When we see
:10:59. > :11:09.those Scottish riders, Ferguson and Montgomery. We saw Killeen trying to
:11:10. > :11:14.chase him down. He may have accepted the medals have gone, but nothing is
:11:15. > :11:21.more inspiring to find extra power in your legs than a rider in front
:11:22. > :11:30.of you. This was Oldham going off, sliding all over the place. He just
:11:31. > :11:38.lost control of his front wheel. This is the rider from jersey, the
:11:39. > :11:44.heaviest crash so far. The bike actually landing on him. The pedals
:11:45. > :11:52.can do some damage. This was Robert Barnes of Jamaica, coming off down
:11:53. > :11:57.Braveheart, he has since retired. He did not fall particularly hard. Do
:11:58. > :12:06.not touch his arms in, rolling onto his back. Barnes can concentrate
:12:07. > :12:09.not touch his arms in, rolling onto the road race on Sunday. We thought
:12:10. > :12:13.they would be a few sketchy moments, and that there has been. We're
:12:14. > :12:25.coming up to the time check. Ferguson is not giving up. Here it
:12:26. > :12:33.is. Taking some air on his back wheel. It is mountain bike can treat
:12:34. > :12:43.in Scotland, Fort William is a World Cup and World Championship downhill
:12:44. > :12:49.venue. This is Max Plaxton. We can see him still in contact with the
:12:50. > :12:57.front three. Seems to be in the most difficulty, but fighting hard to
:12:58. > :13:02.stay in contention for medals. McConnell would be the rider who
:13:03. > :13:07.will have the strength to finish this off, and claim the gold medal.
:13:08. > :13:15.It would be Australia's first in mountain biking at the Commonwealth
:13:16. > :13:21.Games. As we said, he is ranked fourth in the UCI rankings, also
:13:22. > :13:26.second in the World Cup rankings. A pretty decent 2014 so far, I'm sure
:13:27. > :13:36.he will be looking to top it off with a Commonwealth gold. Only
:13:37. > :13:40.Canada and England have won medals in the mountain biking cross-country
:13:41. > :13:48.event in the Commonwealth Games history. It was introduced in
:13:49. > :13:59.Manchester, 2002, repeated in Melbourne, unfortunately never bent
:14:00. > :14:07.in Delhi in 2010. Back here in 2014. This could develop into one of the
:14:08. > :14:17.most memorable races. Killeen saw his countrymen by 15 seconds eight
:14:18. > :14:30.years ago. Here is the Kenyan, his race is over, falling foul of the
:14:31. > :14:35.82nd rule. -- 80 seconds rule. For some it seems like they are just
:14:36. > :14:40.trying to get as far into the race as they could, just testing
:14:41. > :14:49.themselves, he looked like he knew he would be pulled. All the riders
:14:50. > :14:57.looking to take a drink. Some riders can go through ten bottles during a
:14:58. > :15:03.race. You can see Cooper taking on some gel, not always the nicest
:15:04. > :15:09.flavours. Very difficult to eat anything other than the gel. They
:15:10. > :15:16.need to get in the consumption of energy. We can see Plaxton, very
:15:17. > :15:23.often stretching his back out of the seat. They say the lower back in
:15:24. > :15:34.cycling is one of the first things that fatigue is, apart from the
:15:35. > :15:40.legs. -- that fatigues. He is certainly fidgeting around in his
:15:41. > :15:45.seat. Even taking the chance to miss the odd pedal stroke. That does not
:15:46. > :15:51.bode well for him. Still sticking in there. All cyclists have this
:15:52. > :15:59.mentality, persistence overrides resistance. He will be trying to put
:16:00. > :16:04.that pay into the back of his mind. He will be trying to block it out,
:16:05. > :16:14.not think about it. Forget about his back. If the pain becomes a bit too
:16:15. > :16:26.much, hard to forget about it. Seems like he is a bit reluctant on the
:16:27. > :16:33.technical parts, that could be due to the back. We can see the New
:16:34. > :16:43.Zealand rider, his number flapping around in the wind. They still pin
:16:44. > :16:48.these numbers on. It is easy for a couple to fall out. If you are going
:16:49. > :16:56.into your back pocket to get some food. It can be quite annoying to
:16:57. > :17:02.listen to that and feel it flapping around. Even the smallest thing can
:17:03. > :17:16.be really annoying. A lot of discussion about getting these
:17:17. > :17:21.attached. For a rider, if you calculate how much time they spend
:17:22. > :17:33.pinning numbers on, it can be significant. A lot of hours in the
:17:34. > :17:39.season. Killeen in sixth place. Significantly behind Ferguson. The
:17:40. > :17:47.Canadian just behind him in seventh. The story of the men's cross-country
:17:48. > :17:52.is the four lead riders. Quite often in cross-country mountain biking the
:17:53. > :17:59.field can get spread out significantly, they can be a big gap
:18:00. > :18:04.between the top three positions. These four sticking together, this
:18:05. > :18:30.could be one of the most memorable Commonwealth Games races of all
:18:31. > :18:38.time. Down through Double Dare. Almost a collision there between Max
:18:39. > :18:43.Plaxton and Gaze. I think Gaze took a bit of a liberty on Max Plaxton.
:18:44. > :18:57.Still Cooper leading the way for New Zealand. Here are the latest
:18:58. > :19:02.retirements. The race was over. He was another one of the riders who
:19:03. > :19:06.was competing on Sunday. He was fourth at the Lesotho Championships
:19:07. > :19:12.in July of last year and 15th in the African championships. He will be a
:19:13. > :19:18.DNF at the Commonwealth Games. Plaxton in fourth. He is still
:19:19. > :19:24.struggling a bit, on and off the back. Losing a few lengths. It is
:19:25. > :19:33.difficult to understand what is happening but he seems to be OK. He
:19:34. > :19:37.is fighting to keep in contact. It did not help that Gaze cut across
:19:38. > :19:41.him on Double Dare. There was nothing to choose between the riders
:19:42. > :19:48.but the smallest gaps. Plaxton is hanging there for all he's worth.
:19:49. > :19:52.You never know, if he can clear up the pain he seems to be suffering
:19:53. > :19:56.and get a second wind, maybe he can challenge again among the medal
:19:57. > :20:00.positions. The next lap is going to be significant for Plaxton who is
:20:01. > :20:06.using absolutely everything physically and mentally just to tag
:20:07. > :20:10.onto the front three. The Australian done McConnell is trying to get to
:20:11. > :20:16.the front, he wants to be in the lead. -- Daniel McConnell. He cannot
:20:17. > :20:22.get around the New Zealand rider. We got a bit of a close-up on his
:20:23. > :20:30.expression, Plaxton, and it looks as though he is in some sort of pain.
:20:31. > :20:41.Other than the obvious pain that I think is acid build-up in the legs.
:20:42. > :20:50.Cooper on the front. Plaxton is sitting back in fourth place. This
:20:51. > :20:55.will not help him, the only really flat section of the course. Very
:20:56. > :21:05.much at the top, the wonderful views over Glasgow. That gap looks to be
:21:06. > :21:09.getting bigger? He has fought back a gap like that before. There is only
:21:10. > :21:19.so many times you can do it. There we go. The Canadian, Plaxton, often
:21:20. > :21:23.takes the inside, so he is not worrying about the practicalities of
:21:24. > :21:30.that part of the course, taking the shorter most difficult route. He
:21:31. > :21:32.took it much better that time. He lost concentration previously and
:21:33. > :21:40.went down the middle section of that section which no one has taken
:21:41. > :21:43.today. Plaxton in fourth. The gap is growing to the medal positions. He
:21:44. > :21:52.will be aware of that and he is going to have to dig the peer. --
:21:53. > :21:58.dig deep, here. As we get to the business end of the bike race, he is
:21:59. > :22:02.going to have two get back, and he will have trouble, and this could be
:22:03. > :22:09.the end. There will be a point where he gives up because it is too
:22:10. > :22:12.difficult to keep closing the gap. Plaxton really is falling off the
:22:13. > :22:17.front three. It looks like the lead group are catching the tail-enders
:22:18. > :22:22.here which has sensibly pulled over to allow the leaders to go by.
:22:23. > :22:27.Plaxton has not got to the tail yet. This is going to be very hard for
:22:28. > :22:35.Plaxton to take. As he makes his way past James Patterson, the rider from
:22:36. > :22:40.Jersey. Very sensibly he has shifted to one side to allow the leaders
:22:41. > :22:44.through. It is getting tougher and tougher for Plaxton. We could have
:22:45. > :22:48.the rarity here are the Commonwealth Games cross-country mountain biking
:22:49. > :22:54.podium without a Canadian stood on it. That would be a first come
:22:55. > :22:55.podium without a Canadian stood on will definitely be feeling the
:22:56. > :22:59.pressure. He needs to close the gap will definitely be feeling the
:23:00. > :23:03.to get back into a medal position. It is fantastic to see two New
:23:04. > :23:06.Zealanders dominating the race with one Australian Daniel McConnell. He
:23:07. > :23:14.will have to be nervous, having to riders from the same country? -- two
:23:15. > :23:19.riders. A New Zealand sandwich for the Australian. New Zealand have
:23:20. > :23:24.only got two medals before in mountain biking but that was in the
:23:25. > :23:32.women's event in 2002, a silver for Suzy Bride. There has never been a
:23:33. > :23:36.men's medallist from New Zealand in the cross-country mountain biking
:23:37. > :23:40.but that will be about to change, but can McConnell spoil the party to
:23:41. > :23:45.claim top place on the podium? It looks as though Plaxton may have
:23:46. > :23:49.gained a bit of time back again on the front three. Those helicopter
:23:50. > :23:52.shots are significant in giving us a better judgement of how far behind
:23:53. > :24:02.years. He is not out of it completely yet, Plaxton. We saw the
:24:03. > :24:06.New Zealand Gaze looking behind him. It is quite surprising for those
:24:07. > :24:12.three. They are passing another rider over the Broken Biscuits, this
:24:13. > :24:16.is a dangerous section. He may get caught behind here, yes, he is
:24:17. > :24:21.struggling to get past. That is unfortunate for Plaxton. He does not
:24:22. > :24:26.need that additional challenge because he has been riding off the
:24:27. > :24:29.back of these three all day. It is going to cost him a couple of
:24:30. > :24:36.seconds, being caught behind the tail-ender. He is three seconds
:24:37. > :24:41.behind Cooper, the leader. He is splitting the Kiwis, McConnell, in
:24:42. > :24:45.second. I am sure that the tail-enders we have seen going round
:24:46. > :24:50.will probably be pulled off at the end of this lap. You can see the
:24:51. > :24:59.problem is that the lapping riders can cause for the lead group. --
:25:00. > :25:09.problems. Well, each of those three leaders took a drink them. -- then.
:25:10. > :25:12.I am trying to check out the facial expressions but they all have a
:25:13. > :25:17.poker face on, they are giving nothing away, the lead riders. Even
:25:18. > :25:21.Plaxton who we think is physically struggling by the way he has held
:25:22. > :25:27.himself on the bike and the shifting around of his seating position. It
:25:28. > :25:33.would be a surprise if he throughout a heart attack, it seems as though
:25:34. > :25:37.he has been struggling. You can see on the Double Dare that he may have
:25:38. > :25:41.got a bit of motivation and that can happen when you are close to the
:25:42. > :25:47.finish. Plaxton, that was on the previous lap. Close again. He really
:25:48. > :25:52.likes that section. He is back in contention now, he has made contact
:25:53. > :25:58.again, this is an exciting race, when you think he is out of the
:25:59. > :26:04.race, he is back again. He has done really well, Plaxton, after we wrote
:26:05. > :26:08.him off. He is right back in it. That is twice now that Gaze has come
:26:09. > :26:11.across Plaxton on the Double Dare section, the Kiwi likes to change
:26:12. > :26:20.his line whereas Plaxton stays to the outside. I am sure that will not
:26:21. > :26:34.go down well with Plaxton. Here we come up to the final section which
:26:35. > :26:43.was added to the course. Almost an endo. Still trying to stretch his
:26:44. > :26:46.back out. If you get your body position too far forward even on the
:26:47. > :26:57.slightest step down and you could be off your bike. Brig O'Doom, Plaxton
:26:58. > :27:04.is sticking in there. Magnificent work from the Canadian rider. Still
:27:05. > :27:09.it is Cooper from New Zealand who is leading from McConnell and Samuel
:27:10. > :27:15.Gaze. There is nothing in it. The slight gap opens up from Plaxton. He
:27:16. > :27:18.is teasing us! Getting himself back into contention, slipping off and
:27:19. > :27:24.then pulling back. He is still there. He is making it very exciting
:27:25. > :27:28.racing because it is pristine just to win a Commonwealth medal.
:27:29. > :27:32.Everybody is wondering whether the Canadian will be on the podium. My
:27:33. > :27:36.guess is that if he can hang on until he passes the start finish
:27:37. > :27:39.line then he will be able to work through the pain barrier. It is
:27:40. > :27:47.easier when you know you are close to the finish. You start to forget
:27:48. > :27:53.about the pain and you think, if I can do this I can bring home the
:27:54. > :27:57.gold medal for Canada. Once again. This really is developing into a
:27:58. > :28:01.memorable race with four riders in contention for three medals, four
:28:02. > :28:08.into three does not go, somebody is going to be mightily disappointed at
:28:09. > :28:13.the end of this race. You can see the Australian Daniel McConnell, he
:28:14. > :28:20.has a gel strapped to his drinks bottle, he wants to get that in. It
:28:21. > :28:28.is right there. Sometimes it is easier than reaching into your back
:28:29. > :28:35.pocket to get out a gel. McConnell, though, taking up the lead at the
:28:36. > :28:40.moment. Number two from Australia ahead of Cooper and Gaze of New
:28:41. > :28:44.Zealand and Plaxton. These are all riders from the first line at the
:28:45. > :28:55.start. They are in contention. Lapping Ian Crist from Cyprus, one
:28:56. > :29:01.of the tail-enders wearing 17. Another rider who is competing in
:29:02. > :29:08.the road race on Sunday. This is the lead group coming round towards the
:29:09. > :29:12.start finish line. One lap to go. 5.2 kilometres to decide gold,
:29:13. > :29:18.silver and bronze between these four riders. It might be a long time
:29:19. > :29:22.before we see a race this close again. In the cross-country mountain
:29:23. > :29:28.biking at the Commonwealth Games. This is absolutely fantastic stuff.
:29:29. > :29:31.After an hour and 25 minutes of racing, this is extremely close
:29:32. > :29:35.racing. You would have thought we would have seen more attacks, it
:29:36. > :29:40.seems as though the New Zealanders may be having a discussion there.
:29:41. > :29:45.Plaxton is just sitting behind in fourth place. Will they be waiting
:29:46. > :29:49.it out for the sprint, the long uphill sprint towards the finish? Or
:29:50. > :29:54.will somebody make a significant move? The New Zealanders will no
:29:55. > :29:58.doubt try to work together before going for it individually as we get
:29:59. > :30:02.towards the end but the Australian McConnell leads the way and you
:30:03. > :30:07.wonder if the higher ranked rider McConnell will perhaps try to break
:30:08. > :30:13.away at some point. Ahead of these three riders before the final
:30:14. > :30:16.sprint. We would have to expect from what we knew before the race that
:30:17. > :30:20.that would happen from McConnell, being the outstanding favourite. He
:30:21. > :30:27.goes to the front and maybe we will see him applying pressure. The first
:30:28. > :30:32.of the drops on the final lap, past Propeller Point and the final feed
:30:33. > :30:39.station. McConnell is leading from the two New Zealanders, Cooper and
:30:40. > :30:43.Gaze, and Plaxton. They have been shuffling around in terms of who is
:30:44. > :30:50.leading. Plaxton has been in fourth place for quite a while now. But he
:30:51. > :30:55.has closed the significant gap which developed in the previous lap.
:30:56. > :30:58.McConnell is the partner of Henderson, one of the Commonwealth
:30:59. > :31:06.Games contenders in the women's game. A world-class mountain biker.
:31:07. > :31:09.The men's and women's divisions, supporting each other in training,
:31:10. > :31:16.both Australian national champions at cross-country. At the moment we
:31:17. > :31:20.are heading towards a Commonwealth Games podium without the Canadian on
:31:21. > :31:26.it. Unless Plaxton can do something about this. The gap is beginning to
:31:27. > :31:34.build again from the front three to Plaxton. Perhaps he has eased off a
:31:35. > :31:38.bit and will then give it one final push towards the end. The gap
:31:39. > :31:42.between Plaxton and McConnell is significant, if he pulls it back it
:31:43. > :31:46.will be for a minor position and McConnell is opening the gap now
:31:47. > :31:51.between Gaze in second and Cooper in third. The Kiwi riders who are
:31:52. > :31:54.looking to make history to be the first New Zealander to get a medal
:31:55. > :32:02.at the Commonwealth Games mountain biking. All four riders now
:32:03. > :32:05.together. McConnell, though, is holding onto the lead as we come
:32:06. > :32:13.down Double Dare for the last time for these riders.
:32:14. > :32:28.McConnell is leading the way. Plaxton takes the inside route.
:32:29. > :32:32.McConnell goes down. He was not cut up by Samuel Gaze this time. Plaxton
:32:33. > :32:37.has made a move on Double Dare and he has come into second place behind
:32:38. > :32:40.McConnell. It was not long ago that we were writing him off but he is
:32:41. > :32:44.now in second visit in and on the wheel of McConnell. When you get
:32:45. > :32:47.that close to the finish you do not think about your back pain any more
:32:48. > :32:51.and you start thinking about standing on the podium, that will be
:32:52. > :33:02.going through the minds of the riders. Each of them once a gold
:33:03. > :33:09.medal. -- wants it. We expected down McConnell to be on his own, being
:33:10. > :33:13.the clear favourite. Plaxton slipping back down to third. A move
:33:14. > :33:33.on the outside by Gaze. McConnell slipping down into second
:33:34. > :33:40.place. New Zealand first and third, split by McConnell, the Australian.
:33:41. > :33:46.We saw Cooper applying some pressure, out of the seat,
:33:47. > :33:54.sprinting. Daniel McConnell trying to hold the wheel. He is going for
:33:55. > :34:00.it, Cooper, we thought McConnell may make the move, McConnell looking to
:34:01. > :34:06.stick with Cooper. Gaze going as well. It looks as if the pace has
:34:07. > :34:13.got a bit too much for the Canadian, Max Plaxton. The move has not worked
:34:14. > :34:21.for Cooper, McConnell has stuck with him. This could be a magnificent
:34:22. > :34:26.ending to the race. I wonder if that was a team tactic between the New
:34:27. > :34:34.Zealanders, applying pressure to down McConnell, letting him do the
:34:35. > :34:41.hard work. Cooper out of the seat, making it difficult for McConnell.
:34:42. > :34:54.McConnell in second place, Gaze is there. They are climbing up of the
:34:55. > :35:00.Clyde Climb. Going down to Queen Mary's Drop. They have made short
:35:01. > :35:13.work of it all. This is Cooper leading the whale. Claxton has
:35:14. > :35:24.gone, the race is over for him. -- Plaxton. Note -- McConnell still
:35:25. > :35:31.taking no chances, taking the outside line. Something tells me
:35:32. > :35:37.down McConnell is in control, he looked over his shoulder. They have
:35:38. > :35:43.made a move again, coming down Braveheart. Cooper applying the
:35:44. > :35:49.pressure, trying to make it hard for Daniel McConnell. He looks like he
:35:50. > :36:03.is happy in second position, you can keep tabs of both riders. -- he can
:36:04. > :36:10.keep tabs on both riders. These will be three riders on the podium,
:36:11. > :36:16.Cooper, McConnell, Gaze. Max Plaxton the unlucky rider, who has been
:36:17. > :36:22.significantly dropped. He will be heartbroken in fourth. Going to miss
:36:23. > :36:28.the podium. In which order will they finish? Given the rankings,
:36:29. > :36:33.McConnell would be the favourite. Cooper really putting pressure on
:36:34. > :36:37.the Australian. Really great to see, you can see Cooper is digging deep.
:36:38. > :36:44.Giving it everything he possibly can. It looks as if he's happy to
:36:45. > :36:50.fail, because he knows his team-mate is on the wheel of down McConnell.
:36:51. > :36:55.Gaze looks happy to follow down McConnell. Maybe they are putting
:36:56. > :37:06.pressure on him, making them work hard. Not too many places to try and
:37:07. > :37:11.pass, as they make that final lung busting climb, that is where it gets
:37:12. > :37:18.wider, and the fastest sprinter wins. Max Plaxton, he held on for a
:37:19. > :37:28.long while, the medals have slipped out of reach. He was fighting hard.
:37:29. > :37:32.You wonder how significant his back injury may have been.
:37:33. > :37:35.You wonder how significant his back performance from Max Plaxton, looks
:37:36. > :37:43.as if he's not going to be rewarded with a medal round his neck. What a
:37:44. > :37:47.fabulous day we have had. This is going to be a race that will
:37:48. > :37:48.fabulous day we have had. This is long in the memory. Three riders in
:37:49. > :37:52.contention as we come to long in the memory. Three riders in
:37:53. > :37:59.the final lap. Cooper of New Zealand in the White helmets leading from
:38:00. > :38:03.McConnell of Australia. Gaze in the black helmet from New Zealand in
:38:04. > :38:10.third. No mistakes now in this section. It looks like they may have
:38:11. > :38:16.taken the pressure off the pedals, looking around to see where everyone
:38:17. > :38:24.else was. As you say, not many places on the course... Just getting
:38:25. > :38:30.the time check. The mechanical support section. This is where they
:38:31. > :38:34.could stop for mechanical support. Once they are passed here, they will
:38:35. > :38:42.hope they have no mechanical problems. Just under two kilometres
:38:43. > :38:46.remaining to decide the medals, all three very much in the mix. The
:38:47. > :38:54.southern hemisphere dominating, Cooper from New Zealand, McConnell
:38:55. > :39:03.of Australia, Gaze of New Zealand in third. Cooper testing McConnell, so
:39:04. > :39:08.heartily at -- so far he has had the answers. They are just waiting for
:39:09. > :39:13.the part of the course where it is wide enough to get by. It is one of
:39:14. > :39:20.the rare markers we saw get tangled up with the frontrunners at one
:39:21. > :39:25.point. The rider from jersey to get pretty heavy fall, looks as if he
:39:26. > :39:31.had a wound on the outside of his right needle is up James Patterson
:39:32. > :39:35.being signalled in by the marshals. Shows how tough it is, this race.
:39:36. > :39:43.Just finishing it is some achievement. With the 80% rule, they
:39:44. > :39:50.have to finish each lap within 80% time of the lead rider. Very tough.
:39:51. > :39:54.Especially when the leaders are rising so fast. All the
:39:55. > :39:58.photographers are moving into position on the finish line as the
:39:59. > :40:06.three lead riders make their way around. Cooper, McConnell, Gaze is
:40:07. > :40:12.the order in the men's cross-country mountain bike race. This has been
:40:13. > :40:17.fantastic. Samuel Gaze looks quite comfortable. They are waiting for
:40:18. > :40:24.the course to open up after the last technical section. A sharp drop
:40:25. > :40:36.followed by another climb in the Brigadoon. We come past Balderdash,
:40:37. > :40:40.before the uphill finish. As soon as this opens up, we will see who has
:40:41. > :40:50.got the best legs, who is feeling the best. Amazing this race has been
:40:51. > :40:55.so close over one hour, 36 minutes. All still in contention. 15
:40:56. > :41:06.seconds, the closest mountain bike race ever. An English, one, two. We
:41:07. > :41:13.will probably have three riders in that time frame. The New Zealanders
:41:14. > :41:18.have been there right from the start, McConnell went
:41:19. > :41:26.conservatively, got himself involved after that. In what order they will
:41:27. > :41:28.finish, anyone's guess. It is going right to the line. Cooper has been
:41:29. > :41:34.at the front for the majority right to the line. Cooper has been
:41:35. > :41:41.last lap, it looks as if he may have done that to benefit his team-mate,
:41:42. > :41:49.Gaze. Just checking to see where they are. Perhaps they did not
:41:50. > :41:56.realise how far Max Plaxton had dropped off the pace. A little bit
:41:57. > :42:02.of cat and mouse going on. Looking behind to make sure there are no
:42:03. > :42:08.more riders, tightening their shoes. The sprint is coming up, doesn't
:42:09. > :42:13.often happen in cross-country mountain biking, but we will have a
:42:14. > :42:20.sprint for the finish. Looking to get a little bit this under his
:42:21. > :42:21.tongue, looks like Coca-Cola. Something very rare, you don't see
:42:22. > :42:23.that often. tongue, looks like Coca-Cola.
:42:24. > :42:30.Something very rare, you Here is the attack. Cooper has gone for it,
:42:31. > :42:37.accelerating away from McConnell. Gaze has gone past them. It will be
:42:38. > :42:44.a New Zealand one, two. McConnell will have to settle for the bronze
:42:45. > :42:51.medal. Anton Cooper racing for gold. A sprint finish, hate magnificent
:42:52. > :42:56.race, a one, two for New Zealand. Look what it means for Anton Cooper
:42:57. > :43:06.as he crosses the line ahead of his team-mate, Samuel Gaze. Daniel
:43:07. > :43:11.McConnell settling for the bronze. The highest ranked rider in the
:43:12. > :43:18.race. Ten second separating them. Anton Cooper claims New Zealand's
:43:19. > :43:22.first ever Commonwealth gold medal in mountain biking. You can see what
:43:23. > :43:28.it means to him, fantastic performance. Didn't he have some
:43:29. > :43:35.power left at the finish? He was leaving for the majority, sprinting
:43:36. > :43:39.at some points around the back of the course. A phenomenal performance
:43:40. > :43:46.from the 19-year-old from New Zealand. A sporting tap from
:43:47. > :43:57.McConnell, you fancy his chances, but the realisation that that the
:43:58. > :44:03.youngster had on him, he realised the gold and the silver had gone.
:44:04. > :44:12.The realisation that the legs that the youngster. He has seen off the
:44:13. > :44:17.number for man in the UCI world rankings. Definitely showing
:44:18. > :44:23.potential to move into the top five in the world. That was a phenomenal
:44:24. > :44:27.performance. Didn't he have some power at the finish? He is so
:44:28. > :44:36.happy, and so he should be, well deserved. Its friends, family,
:44:37. > :44:41.girlfriend or there to congratulate him on the most memorable day of his
:44:42. > :44:48.career so far. To enjoy it with him, Samuel Gaze, his team-mate, A1, two
:44:49. > :44:52.for a team that had never medal before in cross-country mountain
:44:53. > :44:56.biking. They have smashed the podium with gold and silver. A bitter
:44:57. > :45:05.Commonwealth Games history, Canadians on the podium. A big day
:45:06. > :45:10.for New Zealand mountain biking. Two more medals for their tally in the
:45:11. > :45:15.Commonwealth Games. Whatever he goes on to achieve, Anton Cooper will
:45:16. > :45:23.remember this moment, the day he beat Daniel McConnell, claiming
:45:24. > :45:29.gold. They worked it well between them? Payday. They must be feeling
:45:30. > :45:37.very good, to have two New Zealanders there, working so hard.
:45:38. > :45:46.Especially Cooper on the last lap. Perhaps it was an off day for Dan
:45:47. > :45:56.McConnell. The roars are for Dan -- Grant Ferguson. He is milking this
:45:57. > :45:59.from the crowd! The 22-year-old who won the British Championships one
:46:00. > :46:09.year ago, unable to get amongst the medals, a creditable fifth place
:46:10. > :46:16.finish. Not a bad performance from Killeen, coming in in sixth. He came
:46:17. > :46:20.back strong, to bring back some of that time. Very possible he is
:46:21. > :46:26.starting his preparations for the next Olympics. He is 32, potentially
:46:27. > :46:34.could be his last Commonwealth Games. A medallist on his previous
:46:35. > :46:43.two appearances, bronze in 2002, gold in 2006. A top six finish. Does
:46:44. > :46:50.not podium this time. Let's take a look at that horrific finish, that
:46:51. > :46:55.was the moment where he won it. A magnificent piece of exhilaration,
:46:56. > :47:00.the other two could not respond. Gaze was behind McConnell, he was
:47:01. > :47:03.happy for himself and his team-mate when he crossed the line. A
:47:04. > :47:06.happy for himself and his team-mate when he crossed the line. A good day
:47:07. > :47:15.for the New Zealanders. A fabulous day. Confirmation of the lower
:47:16. > :47:24.places. Max Plaxton coming in fourth in the end. We think he was
:47:25. > :47:30.struggling a bit. This is another of the Canadian hopefuls, did not
:47:31. > :47:35.really get going today. As to be content with seventh position, he
:47:36. > :47:40.was third at the American Championships in March. Never really
:47:41. > :47:53.getting himself involved in the battle for the major positions.
:47:54. > :47:57.STUDIO: What a great watch, who would have thought that the Broken
:47:58. > :48:01.Biscuits could be so treacherous? New Zealand getting first and second
:48:02. > :48:11.place in a race that was dominated by Oceania. Australia in third with
:48:12. > :48:16.Scotland coming in fifth. And a sixth place finish for Killeen of

:50:26. > :51:02.on your bum." "Really?" And I say, Hello there, welcome back to Pacific
:51:03. > :51:09.Quay for live coverage of Glasgow 2014. The 20th Commonwealth Games,
:51:10. > :51:12.of course. Let's head to the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre where the
:51:13. > :51:16.competitors are literally targeting a medal. In terms of the home
:51:17. > :51:21.nations in the men's trap, England are the main challengers, with
:51:22. > :51:24.strong contenders from India and Australia. Here is a quick guide as
:51:25. > :51:36.to what you need to know about the sport. Shotgun requires competitors
:51:37. > :51:40.to fire at moving targets, discs called Clays which are actually made
:51:41. > :51:47.of pitch and chalk. They are launched from the trap. Targets are
:51:48. > :51:50.released on or after the command from the shooter and a hit is
:51:51. > :51:55.declared when one visible piece of clay falls from the target. Targets
:51:56. > :52:02.are 11 centimetres in diameter and travel at 60 mph. In all events the
:52:03. > :52:05.shooter has to be standing with both hands supporting the gun. In Glasgow
:52:06. > :52:18.there are three separate shotgun events, Skeet, trap and double trap.
:52:19. > :52:27.In Skeet, one or two clays launched, and in the trap event shooters fire
:52:28. > :52:30.at single Clays. They get two shots per target in qualification but only
:52:31. > :52:36.one in the final. In double trap they stand 50 metres away while two
:52:37. > :52:42.are launched simultaneously and the shooters have one shot at each clay.
:52:43. > :52:47.In all events the top six and vans from qualification to the
:52:48. > :52:56.semifinals. -- ad farms. -- advance. Today it was England
:52:57. > :53:03.against Australia, the commentary on the golden shoot out comes from
:53:04. > :53:10.Richard Drury. COMMENTATOR: It is now time for Adam Vella of Australia
:53:11. > :53:21.and Adam heading of England to do battle for the gold medal. Adam
:53:22. > :53:34.Vella doing a practice swing. A cheer from the crowd for these two
:53:35. > :53:36.fears competitors. -- fierce. Heading is the defending
:53:37. > :53:41.Commonwealth champion and Adam Vella having won a silver medal at the
:53:42. > :53:51.Commonwealth Games in Manchester, so both of them are top-level shooters.
:53:52. > :53:57.The Australian is underway and he takes the first target of the gold
:53:58. > :54:02.medal match. Now Aaron Heading. It is one apiece. 14 to go. This is the
:54:03. > :54:12.battle for the gold medal in the men's trap. The final event of the
:54:13. > :54:34.clay target competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Two
:54:35. > :54:43.from two. And Heading drops one. Already there is a gap. Now Vella is
:54:44. > :54:49.becoming very polished in the single barrel format as he demonstrated in
:54:50. > :55:02.the semifinal. Now he has been given the order to start, so he already
:55:03. > :55:05.holds a one target lead. Aaron Heading now is trying to put the
:55:06. > :55:14.miss out of his mind as he locks in. That was a good, long
:55:15. > :55:25.follow-through. Just a 1-shot lead at the moment for Adam Vella. A one
:55:26. > :55:34.target lead for Vella. He has been given the order to start. A set
:55:35. > :55:46.routine. Preparing for the target. And he takes it. Aaron Heading. He
:55:47. > :55:57.drops another target. He is claiming a hit. A protest by Aaron Heading.
:55:58. > :56:08.Now, the referee is going to confer with one of the Czech referees. --
:56:09. > :56:16.check. We have a replay. It is difficult to see from that whether
:56:17. > :56:23.there was a piece from it. But... It has been given as indeed a missed
:56:24. > :56:35.target. So, the replay did not show anything obvious. It is indeed now a
:56:36. > :56:41.two target lead for Vella. And he charges on now to be five from five.
:56:42. > :56:47.So it is now difficult for Heading to get himself back in the groove.
:56:48. > :56:54.But still anything can happen with ten targets remaining. Just the
:56:55. > :57:12.slightest hiccup from Vella and it could be evened up again. So, the
:57:13. > :57:20.start time for Tamil' -- for Vella. Vella continuing, six from six.
:57:21. > :57:32.Heading is two down. And he drops another target, so his gold medal is
:57:33. > :57:46.living away from him. He is guaranteed a silver medal. Now three
:57:47. > :57:49.targets in arrears. Vella is a very smooth performer in the single
:57:50. > :58:03.barrel format. And he's showing it yet again. Seven from seven for
:58:04. > :58:12.Vella. Heading is now four from seven. Three targets behind. It
:58:13. > :58:22.would seem very difficult to claw that back, even if Vella misses a
:58:23. > :58:27.couple. Based on the form so far it is unlikely that Vella will miss
:58:28. > :58:38.three. Even less likely now with that confident shot. Great timing
:58:39. > :58:40.from Vella. He shot them all in the semifinal, 15 from 15, and he is set
:58:41. > :58:56.to repeat that in this gold medal match. Vella is waiting for the
:58:57. > :59:17.order to start. Adam Vella now, he is set. And another one to the
:59:18. > :59:35.tally. Heading still has a three shot deficit. Vella now needs four
:59:36. > :59:41.more to lock this up. Vella got a silver medal in Manchester. And this
:59:42. > :59:48.is the gold medal, individual gold, that he is wanting, as he misses his
:59:49. > :59:52.first target. Not happy. Now Aaron Heading may get a sniff of a chance
:59:53. > :00:05.but he, too, misses another so the margin remains unchanged. So Vella
:00:06. > :00:13.has won pairs gold but not individual gold in the Commonwealth
:00:14. > :00:26.Games. And another. That is what the pressure of this format does. So,
:00:27. > :00:32.Heading is still two down. But he is now in with a chance if Vella cannot
:00:33. > :00:39.compose himself. Two targets is the margin. Vella is giving away a
:00:40. > :00:46.substantial lead that he had by missing two in a row. He now has two
:00:47. > :00:50.compose himself. The anticipation of what lies at the end of this, he has
:00:51. > :01:00.two put that out of his mind. He drops three in a row. So, this is
:01:01. > :01:07.what this competition does. Heading now is just one behind but no, he
:01:08. > :01:12.drops another one. Both of them are buckling under the pressure. What an
:01:13. > :01:16.extraordinary end, just as it looked as though Vella was going to cruise
:01:17. > :01:27.to 15 out of 15, he misses three in a row. Two targets is the margin.
:01:28. > :01:32.Three targets remaining. Vella has two secure himself this time. And he
:01:33. > :01:47.takes it. He now needs just one more to lock it up. Two targets is the
:01:48. > :01:55.margin. Vella now needs one more. And he has the gold medal. One more
:01:56. > :02:00.target for Vella. I do not know whether he knows the maths. That is
:02:01. > :02:08.anyone's guess. He has got it. That is the gold medal for Adam Vella. As
:02:09. > :02:13.Aaron Heading prepares to shoot. To finish the gold medal match. Just
:02:14. > :02:21.one target remaining, but the result is already clear. The crowd just
:02:22. > :02:31.pausing now to let this match conclude. Adam Vella is ready to
:02:32. > :02:38.fire his last shot. The last target of the competition. And he misses it
:02:39. > :02:44.but it does not matter. We are now waiting for Aaron Heading to shoot
:02:45. > :02:49.his last target. And they both miss, so there it is, Adam Vella of
:02:50. > :02:57.Australia wins the gold medal in the men's trap. Celebrated their with
:02:58. > :03:08.his coach and team-mate Michael Diamond. It is silver for Aaron
:03:09. > :03:12.Heading of England, a topsy-turvy gold medal match. Targets dropped in
:03:13. > :03:17.allsorts of places, but in the end it was Adam Vella who followed it
:03:18. > :03:21.through with a remarkable single barrel form which he has developed
:03:22. > :03:35.in recent years. What a thrill that the crowd has been treated to. He
:03:36. > :03:38.did it the hard way. He was set to shoot a very clean and 15 from 15,
:03:39. > :03:44.but did it the hard way as the nerves got the better of him. He at
:03:45. > :03:45.last has that individual gold medal of the Commonwealth Games, something
:03:46. > :03:54.he has been pursuing for a long time. There is the national coach. A
:03:55. > :04:02.victory clinched to the camera. What a thrill it has been.
:04:03. > :04:27.ANNOUNCER: The winner of the bronze medal, representing India, Sandhu. A
:04:28. > :04:48.man who dominated the qualifying, faltered during the semifinal.
:04:49. > :05:11.The winner of the silver medal, representing England, Aaron
:05:12. > :05:21.Heading. APPLAUSE Aaron won the gold medal in Delhi.
:05:22. > :05:28.This time, the silver. Sir Jackie Stewart presenting the medal, he
:05:29. > :05:49.shot for his country on many occasions.
:05:50. > :05:59.The gold-medallist, and Commonwealth champion, representing Australia,
:06:00. > :06:02.Adam Vella. APPLAUSE Adam Vella has been pursuing that
:06:03. > :06:09.individual Commonwealth Games medal for many years. He got a silver in
:06:10. > :06:13.Manchester. This time, the gold. And what a thrill to have it presented
:06:14. > :06:23.by Sir Jackie Stewart. Ladies and gentlemen, the national
:06:24. > :07:54.anthem of Australia. And that concludes the higher target
:07:55. > :07:58.competition here. Staying at the Barry Buddon range, it is the last
:07:59. > :08:02.day of the shooting, plenty of medals up for grabs for the eventual
:08:03. > :08:05.winners. Next up, the 50-metre rifle, the small bore shooting. Here
:08:06. > :08:15.is a quick guide to help you out. In Glasgow, there are three rifle
:08:16. > :08:24.events each for men and women. Ten-metre, 50-metre prone and
:08:25. > :08:30.50-metre three positions. All events are held on a shooting range, and at
:08:31. > :08:35.each competitors have a set time to fire a set number of bullets at
:08:36. > :08:38.electronic targets. Each target features ten concentric circles with
:08:39. > :08:42.scores from one to ten. In the ten-metre event, the shooters remain
:08:43. > :08:44.standing at all times and use both arms to support the gun.
:08:45. > :08:51.50-metre prone, competitors have to lie on the fronts while shooting at
:08:52. > :08:55.the target. In the 50-metre three positions event, they have to fire
:08:56. > :08:59.at the target while standing, kneeling and lying prone. In all
:09:00. > :09:05.right for events, the top eight from the qualification round go through
:09:06. > :09:08.to the finals. Well, believe it or not the home nations are looking
:09:09. > :09:13.good for a medal here. Both England and Scotland are occupying the top
:09:14. > :09:14.four positions, which is a bit of a surprise. Let's find out how they
:09:15. > :09:24.got on. COMMENTATOR: Still 3.8 ahead, Daniel
:09:25. > :09:35.Rivers, a really decent cushion, as long as he keeps it steady.
:09:36. > :09:43.Some of them that we would have thought to be near the top, like
:09:44. > :09:50.Narang, not where they would want to be. But still time. No wonder the
:09:51. > :09:54.Scots are smiling. That was a really outstanding set of shots in that
:09:55. > :10:08.series from both Stourton and Hammond.
:10:09. > :10:18.Here we go again, the clock ticks down from two minutes 30 seconds.
:10:19. > :10:34.150 seconds. Rivers in the ten Moore. 10.6 from Hammond. 10.8. The
:10:35. > :10:48.Scots are on fire. Stourton with a 10.8. Absolutely fabulous. We have
:10:49. > :11:01.had another ten point nine. This time from Rajpu. -- Rajput. Hammond
:11:02. > :11:11.with some really good groupings. 10.1 from Stirton, not a disaster.
:11:12. > :11:17.Rivers with a 10.2, the best so far. That is OK, just looking for
:11:18. > :11:19.consistency here. He has made that bit of open water between him and
:11:20. > :11:24.the rest and just needs to be consistent, really, the youngster.
:11:25. > :11:27.He says he wants to challenge for a medal here. He has got a bronze, he
:11:28. > :11:32.could well have another here, sets itself up very nicely as he heads
:11:33. > :11:41.towards the Olympics. A couple of tens. 9.2, though. Look at the
:11:42. > :11:47.grouping here. A picture of concentration there. They shot
:11:48. > :11:54.three, less than a minute to go, in 9.9 from Hammond to stop here's
:11:55. > :11:56.Rajput. He shot his five and will be pretty happy with what he has got.
:11:57. > :12:25.10.9 and a 10.6. Excellent stuff. That was another encouraging series.
:12:26. > :12:32.Started macro with another shot, it was a 10.2, and that is a lovely
:12:33. > :12:36.finish. Yes, solid from the Scots. Rivers's lead at the top has been
:12:37. > :12:41.slightly reduced. Nothing other than a decent, solid and sometimes
:12:42. > :12:56.spectacular ten. Hammond into fourth place. -- Stam and -- Hammond into
:12:57. > :13:01.second place. Proving to be an exciting final. Think how slow and
:13:02. > :13:08.easy paced the qualification was. So, we have one more set in the
:13:09. > :13:14.prone before we had towards standing, and towards elimination.
:13:15. > :13:22.The Indian coach, always animated, always wearing those shades, as
:13:23. > :13:26.well. Yes, even indoors. It is still breezy. This will be tricky for
:13:27. > :13:32.these shooters, as we get ready to go again with another two minutes 30
:13:33. > :13:39.seconds. Close at the top, close at the bottom.
:13:40. > :13:45.Those big monitors in front of them, they can see how everyone else is
:13:46. > :13:56.doing, if they so desire. 10.84 Rajput. -- 10.8 four Rajput. Good
:13:57. > :14:00.first shot for all of the athletes, tends all around. Even if he was
:14:01. > :14:06.solidly shooting 10.3, it is better than going up and down. Rivers, the
:14:07. > :14:14.leader, all with a 10.1. Needs to start putting some big shots in,
:14:15. > :14:21.just to maintain that lead. 10.5 will do very nicely, thank you very
:14:22. > :14:24.much. Solid from Dan. Hammond, a silver-medallist in Delhi, second
:14:25. > :14:31.place, silver medal place here as well. Ten from stout and macro. A
:14:32. > :14:39.10.7 from Sampson, the Australian is shooting very well. -- from Stirton.
:14:40. > :14:45.That is a bit further away from grouping, Hammond. Kenneth Parr has
:14:46. > :14:52.had two excellent shops, and a real horror. What can he do next? Can he
:14:53. > :14:57.regroup a shack read either excellent shots. You can just see
:14:58. > :15:05.his eye moving. Watching these wind flags in front of him. These fans in
:15:06. > :15:09.front of us literally on the edge of their seats, leaning forward, all
:15:10. > :15:17.taking note of what is going on. 10.7. Good shot. You can kind of
:15:18. > :15:26.figured a 9.41 you have two 10.7s. All in the tens. Moving up in the
:15:27. > :15:35.sixth. As always, waiting for a couple. Rajput still has one to go.
:15:36. > :15:47.Hammond with a 10.1. Stirton's last shot was a 10.6. We have just over
:15:48. > :15:52.20 seconds. 10.3. Again, excellent shooting from a very high quality
:15:53. > :15:59.field. 1.2 is the difference between the two enlistment, Dan Rivers and
:16:00. > :16:10.Kenneth Parr. Sampson is the man who has to worry. Quite a bit behind
:16:11. > :16:20.Mohammad Qaddafi Jafar. Just waiting for the command to start from the
:16:21. > :16:50.He has a stopwatch. For the next competition series, load, start get
:16:51. > :16:56.yourself sixth or above and lived to start and fight another
:16:57. > :17:32.Hammond and Stirton started poorly. 10.4 the Dan Rivers. The English
:17:33. > :17:41.dance like that. The Indian takes a while but gets a 9.2 away. The guys
:17:42. > :17:42.will be looking to keep it within the nine and then hitting the odd
:17:43. > :17:42.occasional ten as well. 10.4 the Dan Rivers. The English
:17:43. > :17:43.dance like Anything less than that, 10.4 the Dan Rivers. The English
:17:44. > :17:44.dance like that. The they will be disappointed. Quite a lot of time to
:17:45. > :17:45.get these five shots away. It will get tighter and tighter -- the
:17:46. > :17:46.English fans like that. Kenneth Parr has shot an 8.4. He will be
:17:47. > :17:51.disappointed with that on the far side. Still in second place at the
:17:52. > :17:58.moment, but it is all very, very tight. You can see how breezy it is
:17:59. > :18:02.in the finals all is well, the number on Kenneth Parr's back
:18:03. > :18:06.fluttering in the win there. It is not just the effect of the bullets
:18:07. > :18:17.downrange, also the effect of the wind on the shoot himself. It can
:18:18. > :18:21.actually bus at you and that will have a huge effect on your
:18:22. > :18:28.stability. -- it can buff at you. Niall Stourton not shooting well at
:18:29. > :18:40.the moment. Hammond has landed a ten. -- Neil Stirton.
:18:41. > :18:51.What can he do with his fourth shot? You can see has steadied that
:18:52. > :18:58.is. A small amount of sway and waiting for it to stabilise and then
:18:59. > :19:08.the shot goes. This is a man who always takes his time.
:19:09. > :19:17.That is better, keep it solid. He is up into bronze medal position.
:19:18. > :19:25.Rajput has gone into second place and Scotland fourth and sixth.
:19:26. > :19:27.Rivers is still top of the pile. That is OK. I think he is still safe
:19:28. > :19:51.at the moment. It is changing all the time. Still a
:19:52. > :20:03.couple to shoot, Hammond. And we are all done. I think Hammond still has
:20:04. > :20:12.one to shoot, I really do. He is doing the right thing. He knows he
:20:13. > :20:17.has time. Hammond, it looked like he was not happy with his 8.7 shot, he
:20:18. > :20:26.was just practising basically, getting himself centred again. That
:20:27. > :20:42.man will know what is going on, that he is ahead. At the bottom, Sampson
:20:43. > :20:49.and Jeff -- Jaafar. They need a couple of solid shots in the next
:20:50. > :20:50.series of five shots. They are in danger of being eliminated unless
:20:51. > :21:03.they do something special. Two people will leave after these
:21:04. > :21:12.five shots. Four minutes left on this. Sampson and Jaafar are in the
:21:13. > :21:20.drop zone. We will keep an eye on how they are doing.
:21:21. > :21:35.We do not want the Scots the first to be go out for the home crowd.
:21:36. > :21:48.Jaafar, he has dropped even further behind. It is close between seventh
:21:49. > :21:56.and eighth position. Rivers, so really going ahead. He is having a
:21:57. > :22:04.solid final. He seems calm and in control. That is what you want in
:22:05. > :22:10.high-pressure situations. 10.7. It is a dream final for the youngster
:22:11. > :22:16.so far. You can see the emotion on his face, he is so controlled. This
:22:17. > :22:31.man is always a picture of calmness, Narang. That is really good. 10.5,
:22:32. > :22:47.10.2. Rajput has a poor first shot but good recovery. Exhaling breath.
:22:48. > :22:53.9.3 is not his normal comfort zone. He will be looking for the ten. And
:22:54. > :23:04.a shake their head from Sampson, still in the drop zone. Still about
:23:05. > :23:18.1.4 behind Kenneth Parr. Stirton, of Scotland. 8.8, his last shot, all
:23:19. > :23:24.over the place. 9.8 is better. 10.6 from Daniel Rivers, that is
:23:25. > :23:33.excellent. The 8.6 is an aberration, which you can forgive when he is
:23:34. > :23:40.shooting so well. Yes, it evens out. Moran, a couple shockers towards the
:23:41. > :23:51.end. -- Narang. That will not help him. Sampson and Jaafar, they look
:23:52. > :24:00.like the most likely to take the walk early on.
:24:01. > :24:12.Narang, he has over a minute to get the last shot away.
:24:13. > :24:19.Sampson has not shot well enough to stay in. Bottom at the moment. 10.1
:24:20. > :24:31.is decent, but not good enough. Sampson and Jaafar, seventh and
:24:32. > :24:38.eighth, they will be eliminated. He was fourth yesterday in the prone
:24:39. > :24:44.and hoped for a medal today. Eighth in the air rifle and eighth here. He
:24:45. > :24:49.made the finals, but not a medal. It is a good effort, but he will be
:24:50. > :24:58.disappointed with low finishes in the finals.
:24:59. > :25:11.Again, just gave himself too much to do but he made the final, qualifying
:25:12. > :25:15.eighth and finishing seventh. The man from the Royal Malaysia police
:25:16. > :25:27.will have to leave his rifle fair, in a safe position. We head back to
:25:28. > :25:32.the final six. Rivers still ahead. He is stretching out a commanding
:25:33. > :25:38.lead. With five shots left, if he keeps it in control, it will be
:25:39. > :25:47.difficult to bring back that lead. Perhaps a new superstar on the
:25:48. > :26:05.shooting scene. One shocked. Kenneth Parr -- shot. Kenneth Parr. Stirton
:26:06. > :26:12.with a 10.3. That is a good shot. What can Kenneth Parr do?
:26:13. > :26:31.Rivers with a 9.7. Rajput with a Kenneth Parr, 8.3. He has dropped.
:26:32. > :26:38.Kenneth Parr is the man who has to go, that is how brutal this
:26:39. > :26:46.competition is. One shot and it can all change. Bronze in the 50 metre
:26:47. > :26:50.rifle prone yesterday and qualified third here, but he will not get a
:26:51. > :26:59.medal, he has to settle for sixth place. Once again, India's second
:27:00. > :27:04.and third. Scotland are now in the danger zone. Jonathan Hammond got
:27:05. > :27:19.silver in Delhi, but he could be the next to go. Hammond will have to
:27:20. > :27:31.shoot out of his skin and hope that Stirton stumbles. 50 seconds, one
:27:32. > :27:43.shot. And here comes the clapping. Stirton, 8.8. Hammond needs a big
:27:44. > :27:50.shot. 9.5. Is it enough? 10.0 from Dan Rivers, he is really taking
:27:51. > :27:57.control. Hammond, a 9.9 or above would have done it. It was a low
:27:58. > :28:04.shot from Stirton, which left the door open for Hammond, but he could
:28:05. > :28:09.not do it. APPLAUSE listen to the reception is the John Hammond.
:28:10. > :28:26.He has to settle for fifth place. Now we decide who will have a medal.
:28:27. > :28:36.You do not want fourth place. You do not, but it is looking clearer.
:28:37. > :28:44.Stirton, a tough ask. But at the top, quite a gap for Dan Rivers.
:28:45. > :28:53.Neil Stirton needs a huge shot. Rajput needs to have a meltdown if
:28:54. > :29:02.the Scot is to progress into the medal shoot out. 9.6, he knows that
:29:03. > :29:16.will not be enough. Ten from Rajput, more than enough. Rivers with a 9.9.
:29:17. > :29:20.In fourth, the Scot has to go. The home crowd will be disappointed
:29:21. > :29:25.because they were hoping for a medal, but it is not to be. The man
:29:26. > :29:34.eliminated in fourth place, so close, so far. Everyone applauding
:29:35. > :29:42.an excellent performance from Stirton. We know the medals, we now
:29:43. > :30:02.have to work out what colour it will be. It is a guaranteed medal for
:30:03. > :30:08.England. Rivers, he has been shooting well all the way through.
:30:09. > :30:16.He wobbled with a 9.7, ten, nine .9, but he has done enough work, early
:30:17. > :30:19.on. This last shot will be important for the silver medal. 0.8 between
:30:20. > :30:44.the two Indians. In effect, the two Indians will be
:30:45. > :30:46.looking for a shoot out, for the bronze and he stays on for the gold
:30:47. > :31:01.and silver shoot out. Narang, 9.1, dropping down into
:31:02. > :31:13.third place. There was a swing in fortune. A smile from the veteran.
:31:14. > :31:18.Silver yesterday in the 50 metres rifle prone. He looked on course for
:31:19. > :31:24.a silver, but that was a poor shot, just when he did not want it. This
:31:25. > :31:36.is looking very good for Daniel Rivers. The gap is 5.2. Barring any
:31:37. > :31:42.thing major, it is almost a dead cert.
:31:43. > :31:58.One shot between Dan Rivers, of England, and Rajput of India, really
:31:59. > :32:19.tense. Surely a formality. 10.4! What a way
:32:20. > :32:28.to finish! What a reaction from the English man. The English fans are
:32:29. > :32:34.absolutely delirious. Why not? What a vinyl. He was ahead all the way
:32:35. > :32:41.through. The 24-year-old takes the gold medal for England -- what a
:32:42. > :32:54.final. That was fantastic. What an achievement. That is his girlfriend.
:32:55. > :33:00.She will be so happy for him. Tears of joy for Dan Rivers. The Indians
:33:01. > :33:06.take silver and bronze, but England, with Daniel Rivers, a head from the
:33:07. > :33:13.start. He kept his composure. Kenneth Parr celebrates with him. He
:33:14. > :33:16.has the bronze medal himself -- a bronze medal himself. What a
:33:17. > :33:26.reception from the fans and from the shooters. 20th yesterday in the
:33:27. > :33:35.rifle prone in the 50 metres, but a second medal. It is gold.
:33:36. > :33:44.Dan Rivers, thirsty work, you have just had a slug of water. I don't
:33:45. > :33:49.know what to say. Earlier in the week, getting bronze in the air
:33:50. > :33:53.rifle. You know, it had come early, I didn't realise... I wasn't ready
:33:54. > :33:58.for that. Now I have had that feeling before, one into the final.
:33:59. > :34:05.I felt a lot steadier throughout the final there. More calm and just
:34:06. > :34:08.absolutely smashed it again. Get in! So the bronze medal earlier, that
:34:09. > :34:18.kind of calm Jew down and got you to a place where you knew what you had
:34:19. > :34:22.to do? Going -- calmed you down. Running through that in the air
:34:23. > :34:30.rifle, it just prepared me for coming out. I felt calm, I felt
:34:31. > :34:33.ready. Did my thing. Took me through all the way. This is a bit like the
:34:34. > :34:36.ready. Did my thing. Took me through all the way. This is a bit triathlon
:34:37. > :34:41.of rifle shooting. Three different disciplines. This is the marathon,
:34:42. > :34:45.we call it. It is a hard day. Two and a half hours of shooting in
:34:46. > :34:51.three different positions. So it does technically take the best guys
:34:52. > :34:54.to really get to the top. I qualified in first, I was really,
:34:55. > :34:59.really pleased with that, there is some solid standing. Now obviously
:35:00. > :35:02.to back it up in the final, that is always the pressure moment. You
:35:03. > :35:06.don't want to qualify first and go out last in the final, it is or is
:35:07. > :35:11.the worst way to do it. To come out first and then take gold, it is
:35:12. > :35:13.amazing. Dan Rivers, Commonwealth champion, and literally last man
:35:14. > :35:21.standing, great stuff. Very well to Daniel Rivers and his
:35:22. > :35:29.gold for England at the shooting. Maybe one day my face might be up
:35:30. > :35:32.there? Who knows. Let's get our first games of wrestling at the SECC
:35:33. > :35:36.just behind the armadillo over my shoulder. One of the more
:35:37. > :35:41.traditional sports on view here at the Commonwealth Games, started by
:35:42. > :35:47.that reckoning of Roman gods. Let's get a more up-to-date version is a
:35:48. > :35:51.guide of what you can expect in this sport.
:35:52. > :36:01.Wrestling was one of just four sports contested at the very first
:36:02. > :36:04.Commonwealth Games. It is a classic contest between two athletes seeking
:36:05. > :36:10.dominance through a range of grapples, holds, pins and throws.
:36:11. > :36:13.Men and women compete in all weight categories in freestyle events,
:36:14. > :36:19.whereas Lazar allowed to use their legs for gripping an opponent, and
:36:20. > :36:26.they can hold all parts of the body. A white circle in the middle of the
:36:27. > :36:34.mat measures three metres diameter. It is split into three zones. Points
:36:35. > :36:38.are awarded if you push your opponent into the red zone or for
:36:39. > :36:45.executing a wide variety of holds all blocks will stop it will be used
:36:46. > :36:50.to decide the two finalists in each weight division. They are grappling
:36:51. > :36:56.for medal matches this morning. The first match of this evening session
:36:57. > :36:59.was for a bronze medal. In the 57 kilograms division in freestyle.
:37:00. > :37:14.England against Wales. Commentary from Colin Bryce and non-Evans.
:37:15. > :37:23.Wales being led out here, the Welsh flag, the moment in the history of
:37:24. > :37:27.Welsh wrestling. Never before have they had a medal in freestyle
:37:28. > :37:35.wrestling. You came pretty close in Delhi. Can he do it? So excited to
:37:36. > :37:41.see Craig here. Up against this young man, Omar Tafail, who will be
:37:42. > :37:46.competing in the red singlet. Omar, in many ways, has had a lucky draw
:37:47. > :37:51.to get through against Craig. This is our referee, the Canadian. She
:37:52. > :37:57.will be overseeing the 23-minute rounds. Just checking them over,
:37:58. > :38:04.making sure they are not too sweaty, no foreign bodies on them. We are
:38:05. > :38:16.underway. Craig Pillings of Wales in the blue and Omar Tafail in the
:38:17. > :38:18.red. If Craig can win this and win Wales first ever wrestling medal, he
:38:19. > :38:25.will be a very proud man, and so will I. I was out in Delhi fighting
:38:26. > :38:30.with him. I am so excited to see him on the mat tonight. Craig Pilling
:38:31. > :38:37.managed fourth at the Commonwealth Games in the 55 kilo class in Delhi.
:38:38. > :38:46.A big chance for him here. He is a fast wrestler, very quick. There he
:38:47. > :38:55.goes with the leg. He has a very low lake when he goes for the lead. Very
:38:56. > :39:00.quick fighter. Omar Tafail lost to the wrestler from Nigeria. That is
:39:01. > :39:03.why Omar Tafail has come down to this as well. If you lose to one of
:39:04. > :39:07.the finalists, you get a second chance, as it were. Just a bit of
:39:08. > :39:13.hand control they are looking for here. Two three-minute periods. If
:39:14. > :39:24.you get a take-down, that is the most common way to school. -- to
:39:25. > :39:36.score. Once you are down there you have about ten seconds to work on
:39:37. > :39:41.your man. Craig is defending very, very well. He is a very fit the
:39:42. > :39:44.wrestler. He has got to be careful there on the ground. What he is
:39:45. > :39:52.trying to do is flipped his opponent over onto his back. He has got to be
:39:53. > :39:57.careful there. The Englishman is putting up quite a difference. Craig
:39:58. > :40:01.did well to get out of that. Pushing his head down, using his weight
:40:02. > :40:06.well. Still hasn't been given the two points. Nobody is in control.
:40:07. > :40:12.The referee is looking on. She brings them back to their feet. At
:40:13. > :40:19.the moment it is 0-0, or know, is it going to be a point? I think it was
:40:20. > :40:20.a warning may be, I'm not sure. No points have appeared just
:40:21. > :40:24.a warning may be, I'm not sure. No have been brought back to their
:40:25. > :40:29.feet. Basically they need to throw their opponent on the floor to get a
:40:30. > :40:33.point. If they pin them down on their back, shoulder blades on the
:40:34. > :40:38.ground, that will end the match. If somebody goes ten points clear, that
:40:39. > :40:41.is the end of the match. There are two periods of three minutes and
:40:42. > :40:48.your points from the first round will carry on into the second round,
:40:49. > :40:52.second period. Craig Pilling has had a warning. This makes sense here
:40:53. > :41:08.now. That warning from the referee was to bring up the 30 second clock.
:41:09. > :41:12.They go into this 30 second clock. He has to do something now, he has
:41:13. > :41:20.to score or the point will go against him. He has not done it yet
:41:21. > :41:25.but he is certainly being very busy. That is the 30 seconds up. The
:41:26. > :41:28.Englishman will get a point. That is the new reeling that has come in. If
:41:29. > :41:34.you are too passive you get that 30 seconds on the clock and you must
:41:35. > :41:41.score a point in those 30 seconds. There you go, England 1-0 up. This
:41:42. > :41:44.is a surprise, the Englishman, Tafail, expected to lose this
:41:45. > :41:54.contest. That is more like the Craig Pilling we have seen before. At the
:41:55. > :42:00.British championships he won 10-0. Another two points for that. He took
:42:01. > :42:03.down to the ground, got behind him, rolled him again for another two.
:42:04. > :42:11.Great work from Craig Wright at the end of the first period. 4-1 to
:42:12. > :42:23.Wales, just three points in it. -- from Craig, right at the end of it.
:42:24. > :42:29.It is up to 6-1, the score, five points in it. Let us look at the end
:42:30. > :42:34.where Pilling used his speed. He rode him on his side, he gets
:42:35. > :42:39.another two, and then he does it one more time and gets another two
:42:40. > :42:49.points. He finishes background six points, five clear. Look at the
:42:50. > :42:56.determination on his face. He is only 19 years old, the Englishman
:42:57. > :43:02.Omar Tafail, he is growing in stature here. He put up a good fight
:43:03. > :43:03.for the first two minutes or so. Can he come back on Craig Pilling of
:43:04. > :43:08.Wales, in blue, who leads this 6-1 at the moment? Were he to go up to
:43:09. > :43:14.11-1, filling with win by technical severity, as it is known -- Craig
:43:15. > :43:19.Pilling would win, going ten points clear. He has to be careful because
:43:20. > :43:26.the Englishman is very clear there are many and for the two legs. -- he
:43:27. > :43:32.is very clear there, coming in for the two legs. Craig has fought the
:43:33. > :43:39.Wales for years and years and he is very experienced. He lives and
:43:40. > :43:44.reigns in Bolton, as well. -- lives and trains. Very much a counter
:43:45. > :43:53.fighter. The new rules have changed the way he has to wrestle. Also it
:43:54. > :44:00.is energy sapping, you need speed, strength and stamina. He goes in for
:44:01. > :44:02.the double leg. Good defence from Craig. Still got the leg. Is he
:44:03. > :44:13.still? Yes, he has to get both knees onto
:44:14. > :44:19.the ground to get the two points, but Craig is doing really well. He
:44:20. > :44:28.will get the two points, surely? The referee raises a hand. Is he going
:44:29. > :44:34.to pin him? A reversal there. It was considered just on the mat. He will
:44:35. > :44:43.get a point as well. It should probably go Wales 7-3 England. Yes,
:44:44. > :44:46.that is what should happen. Craig did very well not to spread his legs
:44:47. > :44:53.and put his knees on the floor. England have got the two points. A
:44:54. > :44:57.reversal, so a full two points. You are awarded with more points now for
:44:58. > :45:06.the reversal. Still five points in this contest. One minute 15 seconds
:45:07. > :45:13.to go. They are both working so, so hard. They both want this medal. It
:45:14. > :45:18.means so much to both of them. These wrestlers are some of the fittest
:45:19. > :45:24.athletes around. Back to their feet, one minute to go in this final
:45:25. > :45:29.period of three minutes. I think a lot of people thought Pilling who
:45:30. > :45:34.just dominated at the British Championships up against being
:45:35. > :45:37.Lishman would dominate this too. The file in red, being Lishman, putting
:45:38. > :45:44.up a good fight. Pilling, another good turn. Being Lishman will take
:45:45. > :45:47.it up to 8-5. Can he spin him on his back to get another two points? --
:45:48. > :46:03.the Englishman 30 seconds for Craig Pilling to hold
:46:04. > :46:10.on to get his first ever medal in the wrestling. He has got control of
:46:11. > :46:14.the arm there. 20 seconds to go. The file has managed to pull this
:46:15. > :46:19.back-up. He could charge of the mat, that would only get him one point.
:46:20. > :46:22.He really needs a double leg and pop onto his back. A 4-point move is
:46:23. > :46:30.what the Englishman needs to this around. Craig is going to hold on,
:46:31. > :46:41.two seconds to go. The first ever Welsh medal in freestyle wrestling,
:46:42. > :46:47.in wrestling full stop. The bronze medal goes to Craig Pilling of Wales
:46:48. > :46:53.defeating Omar Tafail of England 8-5 over the two. Delighted for Craig
:46:54. > :46:58.Pilling. He worked so hard. It will probably be his last Commonwealth
:46:59. > :47:02.Games and he will go over to his corner, his coach and Alan Jones,
:47:03. > :47:06.who has been a servant of Welsh judo and Welsh wrestling for over 20
:47:07. > :47:15.years. Absolutely delighted for them. Here he goes. This is his
:47:16. > :47:26.first two points, he turns him over for another two. He gets the four
:47:27. > :47:33.points. He did well there. The Englishman, tar file, gave it his
:47:34. > :47:37.all for the -- Tafail, gave it his all. The Welshman walks off knowing
:47:38. > :47:43.he will get a bronze medal. He must be very happy with that.
:47:44. > :47:47.Just to remind you, every sport here at the Commonwealth Games is
:47:48. > :47:52.available online. Just to remind you, every sport here
:47:53. > :47:56.at the Commonwealth Games is Let's stay with what is going on within
:47:57. > :48:00.the BSE CC, because at these Commonwealth Games women's boxing is
:48:01. > :48:05.of course making its debut. Let's go to the lightweight division.
:48:06. > :48:35.Wales's Charlene Jones against an seeker Ara Shackley -- an seeker Ara
:48:36. > :48:43.champions of the respective nations. Charlene Jones of Wales. Her
:48:44. > :48:51.opponent, wearing red, Arachchi of Sri Lanka. Both 23 years of age.
:48:52. > :48:57.Arachchi, she is the reigning national champion at 60 kilograms,
:48:58. > :49:14.having taken that title last year. Four two-minute rounds scheduled. A
:49:15. > :49:20.fast and furious start by both. Arachchi, making good use of her
:49:21. > :49:25.range and straight shots. She just allowed Jones to finish the exchange
:49:26. > :49:30.on the inside. Jones with her back to the rope momentarily. She moved
:49:31. > :49:40.to her left to come out of that confining corner. Losing her
:49:41. > :49:49.balance. But then fashioned a clinch at close quarters. The referee
:49:50. > :49:59.issuing no instructions. Jones needs to make the most of these clinchers.
:50:00. > :50:05.-- clinches. She will struggle at range with her opponent, who has
:50:06. > :50:11.longer arms. Making good use of the straight shots. Jones needs to work
:50:12. > :50:16.our way inside. When she is inside, throw the body shots and the head
:50:17. > :50:26.shots. Switching the attack. Good shot success from Arachchi. It will
:50:27. > :50:30.be interesting to see how the judges score it. The eye-catching shots
:50:31. > :50:45.came from the Sri Lankan. Jones leading off, but she just lost
:50:46. > :50:51.her balance. Catching a strong rear hand by her opponents. Both boxers
:50:52. > :50:58.exchanging. Quite difficult to decide between the two. The judges
:50:59. > :51:04.have found in favour of Jones. Charlene Jones is part of a nine
:51:05. > :51:12.strong contingent of two women and seven men.
:51:13. > :51:25.The instructions concluded with, come back with a left hook. Into the
:51:26. > :51:32.second round. A fast start. That is in an effort to lay claim to the
:51:33. > :51:41.pivotal place of centre ring, they strode out. A blistering start by
:51:42. > :51:46.both. Jones needs to apply pressure and push her opponent back onto the
:51:47. > :51:52.ropes. She is capable inside. She needs to work through the phases.
:51:53. > :52:02.When she gets inside, she needs to capitalise. Left right success from
:52:03. > :52:07.Arachchi, but a response from Jones. Arachchi, she will be where she
:52:08. > :52:14.conceded the opening round despite her success. She is being met by an
:52:15. > :52:25.equally determined Charlene Jones. Both having single shot and
:52:26. > :52:32.combination shot success. Jones is best when she is inside. She is a
:52:33. > :52:46.front foot pressure fighter. She needs to turn her opponent and put
:52:47. > :52:53.the pressure on herself. A right hook towards the back of the head
:52:54. > :52:59.from Jones. The double jab attack, the last did not get through. She
:53:00. > :53:06.needs to get behind the jab. She is happy, Arachchi and, to move back if
:53:07. > :53:10.you put the pressure on. Jones needs to continue pressure with her feet,
:53:11. > :53:18.shuffling forward behind to continue pressure with her feet,
:53:19. > :53:27.punches. That was a good round of boxing. The end of round number two,
:53:28. > :53:40.remember. Jones taking the opening round. We can listen in. Despite the
:53:41. > :53:53.presence of a head guard, Arachchi, she picked up the cuts. Probably a
:53:54. > :54:02.car finger rear hook from Jones. -- cuffing. All three judges seeing in
:54:03. > :54:16.favour of Jones after the second round.
:54:17. > :54:28.Two rounds to go. Charlene Jones is boxing beautifully. She is using
:54:29. > :54:35.speed and quickness and intelligence to counter the length and skill and
:54:36. > :54:39.thoughtfulness of her opponent throughout these two rounds. She
:54:40. > :54:45.took the opening rounds in unanimous fashion. She has presented an
:54:46. > :54:53.elusive target for the boxer from Sri Lanka. She came off the ropes
:54:54. > :55:02.and gave the opponent plenty of room. A good right hand over the
:55:03. > :55:12.top. Jones is using her feet to terrific effect to launch attacks,
:55:13. > :55:18.despite her height. Look at that for the snaking left hand. Great head
:55:19. > :55:25.movement. Slipping and punching at the same time and avoiding straight
:55:26. > :55:39.shots from Arachchi. Starting to command this bout. In Arachchi
:55:40. > :55:47.pursuit, -- in pursuit, Arachchi. A good right hand to the body.
:55:48. > :55:53.Arachchi, while she has been pose the puzzle she cannot figure out...
:55:54. > :56:12.Jones got herself onto the medal podium in the GB tournament. I say
:56:13. > :56:21.GB, I mean Gee Bee. Great movement by Jones. A confident display during
:56:22. > :56:27.the course of that round. The legs were used wonderfully. Keeping
:56:28. > :56:33.herself out of trouble, launching attacks and exhibiting the art of
:56:34. > :56:37.hitting without being hit. Exactly what Olympic boxing is about. You
:56:38. > :56:45.need to deploy good defences not to get hit. Excellent head movement to
:56:46. > :56:49.avoid shots coming back at her while she comes back with counterpunches
:56:50. > :57:04.to good effect. Again, all of the judges in favour of Charlene Jones
:57:05. > :57:14.in the blue corner. The despondent looking Arachchi. She has a cut and
:57:15. > :57:24.is trailing by 3-0 as we enter the final round. Charlene Jones
:57:25. > :57:32.representing Wales, two successive national titles. Just took a right
:57:33. > :57:37.hand from Arachchi. An aggressive fast start by boxer who is perhaps
:57:38. > :57:41.becoming increasingly desperate. Finding herself towards her own
:57:42. > :57:48.corner but then using good lateral movement to escape. This is where
:57:49. > :57:52.Jones needs to use her footwork. Keep the majority of the ring behind
:57:53. > :58:00.her so she can escape the inevitable attack by her opponent. Charlene
:58:01. > :58:06.Jones using every inch of the boxing ring. Look at that for invasive
:58:07. > :58:13.movement. Dipping at the knees, swaying, coming back with shots of
:58:14. > :58:20.her own. It was great trunk movement. The shots are starting to
:58:21. > :58:27.flow. She is relaxing, you can see that in her shoulders. Coming back
:58:28. > :58:33.with capable shots and combinations. That single, spearing left jab has
:58:34. > :58:40.been affected. Dipping Japanese. The right hand of her opponent sailing
:58:41. > :58:46.harmlessly over her head. And left right success from Jones. She is
:58:47. > :58:54.using the ring, single shots, catching her with that jab. That was
:58:55. > :59:03.a lovely rear hand, just doing that combo. It was a good right-hand lead
:59:04. > :59:08.out of the orthodox stance. Caught with a straight left, but it has
:59:09. > :59:14.been another commanding display in the final round. A confident
:59:15. > :59:23.performance from Charlene Jones. Excellent head movement once again.
:59:24. > :59:28.And a cheeky uppercut by Arachchi. A wonderful performance by Charlene
:59:29. > :59:36.Jones, in blue. She has produced a brilliant display. Surely it is just
:59:37. > :59:39.waiting the formality of the official announcement that will seal
:59:40. > :59:46.her place in the quarterfinals of the lightweight tournament.
:59:47. > :59:52.Arachchi, she started brightly, but as the contest group, Jones grew
:59:53. > :59:58.confident. She did and she was shining towards the end of this

:00:52. > :01:04.Taking every round from every judge. Congratulations. Onto the
:01:05. > :01:14.next one now. Were you nervous? Very nervous. Did you sleep last night? I
:01:15. > :01:19.did not sleep too well. I was thinking in my head what I would do.
:01:20. > :01:26.If you are thinking about what you were going to do, did you do it? I
:01:27. > :01:31.think so. Not my best performance, but the first one towards the
:01:32. > :01:37.hardest. Presumably you have not fought in an atmosphere like this.
:01:38. > :01:45.It is amazing. The crowd are good. I really enjoyed it. Well done. It was

:05:30. > :05:48.Executive, Colin McKay Cruden. And the winner of the bronze medal,
:05:49. > :05:52.representing India, Gagan Narang. He was looking for an all-time shooting
:05:53. > :06:00.gold medal record of nine. In the end, he was beaten to silver on the

:06:31. > :06:42.And the winner of the silver medal, representing India, Sanjiv Rajput.
:06:43. > :06:51.APPLAUSE Silver medal, then. He managed to

:06:56. > :07:00.For the 32-year-old who had a bronze in Melbourne in the rifle prone, he
:07:01. > :07:25.goes one better here in Glasgow 2014, with silver.
:07:26. > :07:31.And your gold-medallist and Commonwealth champion, with a new
:07:32. > :07:37.Commonwealth Games finals record, representing England, Daniel Rivers!
:07:38. > :07:42.APPLAUSE He was a little bit emotional after
:07:43. > :07:46.he won. His girlfriend, Vicky, was in floods of tears, and also hear
:07:47. > :07:50.his grandfather, who got into shooting, although he was not a
:07:51. > :07:55.shooter himself, and that what it has resulted in. He was fabulous,
:07:56. > :07:58.all the way through this final, and he won it by a mile. Dan Rivers of
:07:59. > :08:16.England takes the gold. He said he wanted to challenge for a
:08:17. > :08:22.medal here. That was his ambition before. He has come away with a
:08:23. > :08:36.bronze in the ten-metre air rifle, and gold here.
:08:37. > :09:52.Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem of England.
:09:53. > :09:57.He was a bit emotional when he was talking to reporters after the gold.
:09:58. > :10:05.He has held it together during the rendition of Jerusalem. He is the
:10:06. > :10:06.gold-medal list in the 50-metre rifle three positions. Daniel Rivers
:10:07. > :10:12.on top of the podium. Emotional scenes for Daniel Rivers
:10:13. > :10:32.at the Barry Buddon shooting centre. You expect there might be one or two
:10:33. > :10:44.bits of jostling for position for the next five days or so. The
:10:45. > :10:48.weightlifting for England's women, great scenes with a great backflip
:10:49. > :10:53.celebration at the end. Only a few days ago, what about Rebecca Tyler,
:10:54. > :10:58.the 15-year-old from Yorkshire. She finished fourth in which was a huge
:10:59. > :11:04.credit for her. She is a prospect. What about Mercy Brown? One of the
:11:05. > :11:10.team-mate in England. There are two disciplines in the wake lifting, the
:11:11. > :11:13.snatch and the clean and jerk. Mercy is lying fifth after the snatch.
:11:14. > :11:20.They are now into the second discipline.
:11:21. > :11:27.COMMENTATOR: Mercy Brown does not gain ground, just keeps herself
:11:28. > :11:31.where she gain ground, just keeps herself
:11:32. > :11:42.in relation to the lifter from Fiji. This is Mercy Brown from England.
:11:43. > :11:49.And that is a big setback. It is a setback. She looked like she rushed
:11:50. > :12:05.that a little bit. Now, what I would say is that the English camp now are
:12:06. > :12:13.going to have to hope the Fijian opponent runs into trouble. Apolonia
:12:14. > :12:17.Vaivai. She grabbed the bar, goes right into it and starts lifting
:12:18. > :12:22.before she was completely stationary. It through her momentum
:12:23. > :12:31.backwards. Apolonia Vaivai has put her next attempt up to 115. Mercy
:12:32. > :12:35.must come out here and try and make amends. She did it in the snatch, I
:12:36. > :12:41.am confident she can do it in the clean and jerk. Just getting rid of
:12:42. > :12:47.the nerves on that first lift. The only way this works for mercy, she
:12:48. > :12:50.has to make this, hope that Apollonia misses the next two and
:12:51. > :12:56.then she can load the weight on the bar and go for the big one on her
:12:57. > :13:19.final attempt. That is the equation for the English lifter.
:13:20. > :13:38.Not an easy clean but so gutsy. Oh! It looked horrible but it did not
:13:39. > :13:42.actually hit her. She was not patient enough. She went right into
:13:43. > :13:44.the jerk. So hard with these heavyweights coming don't want to
:13:45. > :13:52.spend a lot of time on your shoulder, thinking about it. She is
:13:53. > :13:59.so gutsy. Not exactly stable when she goes to drive. That caused it to
:14:00. > :14:08.go forward. Luckily she got away from it in time. This is a really
:14:09. > :14:18.hard job now for Keith. He has got to rebuild the confidence so that
:14:19. > :14:23.she can say, "yes, I can", and come out and deliver. This is the second
:14:24. > :14:28.athlete today we have seen change their game plan from going for
:14:29. > :14:37.bronze to going for a position on the scoreboard. So we can absolutely
:14:38. > :14:40.say that Apolonia has got the bronze medal, because there is not anybody
:14:41. > :14:46.out there who will take anything away, because the reality is that
:14:47. > :14:49.Mercy Brown is now really focused on getting that total. That's right.
:14:50. > :15:07.APPLAUSE This would be for 203, which at the
:15:08. > :15:14.moment would put her into second place, but remember the two big guns
:15:15. > :15:23.have yet to start. Just waiting in the wings the first course to finish
:15:24. > :15:27.and the main course to arrive. She needs to take her time between
:15:28. > :15:33.lifts. That is actually a better clean than the second one. She is
:15:34. > :15:38.getting stable. She saves the day. APPLAUSE
:15:39. > :15:42.You know what? We should not ignore the fact that those two big guns do
:15:43. > :15:46.need to make at least one clean and jerk each to keep her off the
:15:47. > :15:52.podium, so there is that possibility as well. That is what you learn
:15:53. > :15:59.during a career, you have to come back from adversity. Ritchie
:16:00. > :16:04.Paterson had to do it last night. He did not expect to be red lighted on
:16:05. > :16:09.his first two attempts. Mercy did not expect to fail her first two
:16:10. > :16:14.attempts. It was a great jerk, so solid overhead. That clean wasn't
:16:15. > :16:17.that easy, she really composed herself for the jerk. The other
:16:18. > :16:24.thing is, OK, the bronze medal she does not have, but making that lift
:16:25. > :16:29.is going to help her go home in a much more positive frame of mind.
:16:30. > :16:33.That's right, and it will help her in future competitions when she
:16:34. > :16:38.finds herself in hot water, she knows she can get herself out of it.
:16:39. > :16:44.Apolonia Vaivai, in a funny sort of sense, is in no man's land. She has
:16:45. > :16:48.209 kilos, she is in the lead but in a situation where she can't catch
:16:49. > :16:52.the first two. She has just got to lift out here on these first two
:16:53. > :16:58.attempts. You never know. Union do know, because I expected her to get
:16:59. > :17:03.that. Just a little far back on the heels. What I was going to say, you
:17:04. > :17:13.never know with either the Canadian or the Samoan if they ran into
:17:14. > :17:18.trouble. That is true. The weight was just back on the heels there. At
:17:19. > :17:24.the moment, Fiji in the lead with 209, Apolonia Vaivai just at this
:17:25. > :17:30.particular moment in time, it is England's Mercy Brown in second
:17:31. > :17:40.place on 203. In third place, Kylie Leuluai Beck Australia on 197.
:17:41. > :17:54.Apolonia Vaivai not wasting any time. This is a precious experience.
:17:55. > :18:00.This for a total of 214. Nice try. But not to be. She really fought it.
:18:01. > :18:00.Just not high enough on the collarbone.
:18:01. > :18:02.But not to be. She really fought it. Just not high enough on the Her
:18:03. > :18:10.consolation prize is the bronze medal.
:18:11. > :18:18.Apolonia Vaivai, second in the previous championships. Now at new
:18:19. > :18:23.Caledonia, and in these Commonwealth Games she will take home the bronze
:18:24. > :18:29.medal. Just slipped right off the shoulders there. So now, a we have
:18:30. > :18:32.the head-to-head jewel that will determine who is the champion and
:18:33. > :18:50.who is the runner-up. The Canadian is heavier than her
:18:51. > :18:57.Samoan opponent. This would take to 243. If I am not... A Commonwealth
:18:58. > :19:23.Games clean and jerk record and total record.
:19:24. > :19:31.That was a nice first clean. There is so much whip on the bar with the
:19:32. > :19:40.big weights because they move a lot. Does she master it? She does. That
:19:41. > :19:45.is the start we were looking for. Commonwealth Games clean and jerk
:19:46. > :19:55.and total are now hers. It was in 2010 that the record was set. Now
:19:56. > :20:12.the Canadian has both records. They may change again. Mary Opeloge, she
:20:13. > :20:17.has one kilogram more. That would make her level. It would not give
:20:18. > :20:23.her the overall record but it would give her the clean and jerk record.
:20:24. > :20:29.You have to break a record by one kilogram to take a record. That is
:20:30. > :20:33.where we can see interesting things happen, when one person has the
:20:34. > :20:40.total record and the other has the medal. They will not be
:20:41. > :20:46.concentrating on records, they will look for a weakness in each other.
:20:47. > :20:54.There was no weakness in the clean, I can tell you that. David, I am so
:20:55. > :21:00.excited. We have four more attempts like this ahead of us. Mary Opeloge
:21:01. > :21:10.And, when she competed in Delhi, she finished fifth. Marie-Eve
:21:11. > :21:17.Beauchemin-Nadeau, when she finished as runner-up, she totalled 225. Four
:21:18. > :21:23.years ago it was an 11 kilograms advantage to the Canadian, but times
:21:24. > :21:31.have changed. Four years of training can change a lot of things. Mary
:21:32. > :21:34.Opeloge, she comes from a family of five and two of them are already
:21:35. > :21:42.Commonwealth Games champions from Delhi. She wants to join the family
:21:43. > :21:49.roll of honour stop Mary is in a great position. She is assured the
:21:50. > :22:07.silver this could be a new clean and jerk
:22:08. > :22:10.and Commonwealth Games total record. What I like about her is she is
:22:11. > :22:14.coming out smiling and she is confident.
:22:15. > :22:30.She knows this will feel good. A personal best at 141. This is within
:22:31. > :22:32.her range. Such leg strength. It is not the coming from the bottom like
:22:33. > :22:39.that from a dead stop. And not the coming from the bottom like
:22:40. > :22:46.solid jerk in her pocket. And that was it. She stabilises and delivers.
:22:47. > :22:54.solid jerk in her pocket. And that So easy. That is putting a lot of
:22:55. > :23:00.pressure on Mary from Samoa. Her last lift was easy but between the
:23:01. > :23:03.clean and jerk, she did not adjust her foot width and that could go
:23:04. > :23:10.against her. She needs to correct that technical error. It seems that
:23:11. > :23:17.both coaching teams are determined this will be decided on the very
:23:18. > :23:29.last lift of each of their athletes. Mary Opeloge, 138, exactly the same,
:23:30. > :23:32.to go to 247 she will grab the clean and jerk record. But who cares about
:23:33. > :23:38.that at the moment? Completely irrelevant. She has the power for
:23:39. > :23:49.this. It is all about the transition from the clean to the jerk.
:23:50. > :23:59.Oh, no! As she started to walk forward, her hips got behind. She
:24:00. > :24:06.could not get back underneath the bar, advantage Canada.
:24:07. > :24:11.If you want to carry on watching the weightlifting, go to the BBC
:24:12. > :24:15.website. No medal for Mercy Brown, but there are medal prospects at the
:24:16. > :24:22.shooting range, which is where we are heading. We are hoping to see a
:24:23. > :24:27.little bit of history in the making. Jen McIntosh of Scotland will make
:24:28. > :24:31.history if she takes a medal in the 50 metres rifle. It would make her
:24:32. > :24:36.the most decorated Scottish athlete in the Commonwealth Games history.
:24:37. > :24:40.It is a record she would take away from her mother, a former shooter.
:24:41. > :24:49.We can join our commentator, Richard Drew.
:24:50. > :24:56.COMMENTATOR: At the moment, anything could change. Elimination does not
:24:57. > :25:00.come until we have a couple of shots in the standing series. Still one
:25:01. > :25:08.minute on the clock. We are waiting for the slower, more steady shooters
:25:09. > :25:40.to shoot. The Indian being one of those. 10.8, it was worth the wait.
:25:41. > :25:46.It takes her to fourth. Mohamed Taibi, she is so experience. The
:25:47. > :25:49.wind is blowing. Unlike qualification, way you choose when
:25:50. > :25:59.to shoot, here, there is the time pressure. And in qualification, the
:26:00. > :26:15.maximum is ten. Now we have up to 10.9. The pressure on Jen McIntosh.
:26:16. > :26:32.23 years of age, from Edinburgh. The leader is Ser, from Singapore.
:26:33. > :26:40.Wrigley with 9.2, she needs to pick up her game. She is a little behind.
:26:41. > :26:50.10.1 from Jen McIntosh. She is finding her range.
:26:51. > :26:57.Ser, she is inscrutable. Not shooting great at the moment. She
:26:58. > :27:04.needs a couple of tens to keep herself at the top of the
:27:05. > :27:11.leaderboard. The fractional scoring is designed to create extra
:27:12. > :27:18.volatility. The difference between 10.9 and ten is enough to change the
:27:19. > :27:23.rankings. We saw that in the men. We thought Rajput would get the silver.
:27:24. > :27:37.In the end, it was a ranking slipped down with poor last shot. That is
:27:38. > :27:49.solid shooting from the South African. Most eyes will be on the
:27:50. > :27:58.local girl, Jen McIntosh. She had a variable round. She is in fourth at
:27:59. > :28:08.the moment. It does not matter if you are in the high nines as long as
:28:09. > :28:13.you get some decent tens, as well. Jen McIntosh following the clan of
:28:14. > :28:22.shooters, with dad Donald and her younger sister, who we saw in the
:28:23. > :28:29.air rifle event. And surely, who presented the medal to her daughter
:28:30. > :28:31.yesterday, is a medallist herself. She is struggling at the moment.
:28:32. > :29:00.Almost two points behind Ridley. Kneeling is over. We have seven
:29:01. > :29:15.minutes to change over to be on your stomach, prone shooting.
:29:16. > :29:22.Those firearms are highly specialised and purpose-built for
:29:23. > :29:34.this discipline. And you have the heavy canvas clothing.
:29:35. > :29:46.While they take a break at the shooting, just to prepare for the
:29:47. > :29:48.next position, which is lying prone, we will go to the wrestling and a
:29:49. > :30:18.chance of a gold for England. Now for the gold medal match. This
:30:19. > :30:29.should be a cracker. I do not think Yana Rattigan will get it her own
:30:30. > :30:32.way. She was quoted an hour ago saying she was desperate to deal
:30:33. > :30:41.with the nerves. She wants to win, but she is trying to deal with the
:30:42. > :30:54.nerves. Vinesh, she looks cool calm and collected. She beat her opponent
:30:55. > :31:01.by a technical superiority, racking up ten clear points in double quick
:31:02. > :31:02.time, but I do not think Yana Rattigan will have that easy a
:31:03. > :31:15.fight. The gold medal contest about to
:31:16. > :31:27.begin. Rattigan of England in blue. In the red, Vinesh, of India.
:31:28. > :31:35.Straightaway, Vinesh. Rattigan looking cold at the start. She
:31:36. > :31:40.looked nervous walking out. She has got medals, she is the more
:31:41. > :31:44.experienced wrestler. She is married to Leon Rattigan, who is fighting
:31:45. > :31:52.for England at the Commonwealth Games.
:31:53. > :31:59.This is a great comeback from Rattigan.
:32:00. > :32:03.The wake-up call of being taken down almost straightaway has done its
:32:04. > :32:13.job. That was a great technique, picking
:32:14. > :32:19.up four points, the maximum you can get for a throw in wrestling. It
:32:20. > :32:23.used to be five. If you pin your opponent's shoulders on the ground
:32:24. > :32:29.for a few seconds, it is the end of the match. It only needs to be a
:32:30. > :32:33.momentary pause. Not like professional wrestling, when you
:32:34. > :32:43.have the three count. This is the real deal. The shoulder blades down
:32:44. > :33:02.for the momentary pause. You need ten clear points to win.
:33:03. > :33:03.the same move as earlier on. The Indian very low, coming in for that
:33:04. > :33:19.leg. It was a good defence. That was almost eight carbon copy of
:33:20. > :33:30.the first she gave away. She is so low, Vinesh. Rattigan has got the
:33:31. > :33:34.arm now. When you get your comfortable grip, your favourite
:33:35. > :33:35.grip, that is when you go in. The whistle had gone there. She is
:33:36. > :33:48.lucky. It is still four apiece in this
:33:49. > :33:56.first period. Three minutes of each period, two periods of course. Were
:33:57. > :34:00.it to be an absolute right at the end of the match, then the highest
:34:01. > :34:04.scoring move would be the one that decides it. At the moment, it is
:34:05. > :34:07.Yana Rattigan with a 4-point take-down she did that would get the
:34:08. > :34:10.nod. Though the way the wrestling has gone here at the Commonwealth
:34:11. > :34:16.Games with these new rule changes, I am very much doubtful this will be
:34:17. > :34:26.the final score. The whistle has gone there. That was a warning for
:34:27. > :34:31.the Indian early on for passivity. Now the clock has come up, it takes
:34:32. > :34:35.down to 30 seconds. If the Indian does not score a point now in the
:34:36. > :34:42.next 30 seconds, Rattigan will get a point. So she needs to defend now.
:34:43. > :34:47.This new rule change to encourage the athletes to be attacking. The
:34:48. > :34:53.Indian deemed to be too passive. She is running out of time here.
:34:54. > :34:57.Rattigan did not need to do that, she could have just offended there.
:34:58. > :35:08.The Indian scoring the points. 6-4 now. That is the end of round one.
:35:09. > :35:13.6-4. Vinesh at the halfway point leading by two. Yes, I cannot
:35:14. > :35:16.understand why Yana Rattigan came in for that throw their with so little
:35:17. > :35:20.time on the clock. She could have just stayed and offended, and she
:35:21. > :35:25.would have got the point and she would have been in the lead. Here is
:35:26. > :35:28.the 4-point throw. Excellent, drives ahead, nearly gets the pain. So
:35:29. > :35:32.close to getting her shoulder blades on the ground, which would have
:35:33. > :35:39.spelt the end of the match. The Indian girl does so well the bridge
:35:40. > :35:45.out of that. So strong. Back out for the second period, three minutes to
:35:46. > :35:49.decide that gold medal. In the women's 48 kilo class. Yana Rattigan
:35:50. > :35:55.of England, two points down at the moment on Vinesh, the Indian. She
:35:56. > :36:00.might not have a history of doing well at major championships, Vinesh,
:36:01. > :36:03.but both her sisters are World Championship bronze-medallists, and
:36:04. > :36:14.that says it all. It is in the family. 8-4 up at the moment and
:36:15. > :36:16.Rattigan is in some trouble here. Try to go for the late lace but
:36:17. > :36:29.Rattigan managed to defend it. She needs to score now, but there is
:36:30. > :36:32.plenty of time left on the clock. And we know she can pull these big
:36:33. > :36:36.throws it she gets the right grip. The Indian is defending, pushing
:36:37. > :36:46.Rattigan's head down with the right hand. She comes in for an attack but
:36:47. > :36:52.doesn't get a score. Now just under two minutes to go. In this gold
:36:53. > :36:59.medal match, Rattigan of England in blue, four points down. She looks so
:37:00. > :37:04.impressive, after an initially poor start and a take-down. She has just
:37:05. > :37:09.started to stall a little bit, Vinesh, the youngster, growing, in
:37:10. > :37:15.terms of confidence, against Rattigan, who comes to this with a
:37:16. > :37:18.very impressive list of medals, including two European champion ship
:37:19. > :37:22.Silver medals, and a fifth, even more impressively, at the World
:37:23. > :37:26.Championships. Yes, Vinesh looks strong. She looks in control, she
:37:27. > :37:36.just has to defend her lead. Doesn't matter if she gets penalised, she
:37:37. > :37:40.takes her down the four points. -- for four points. The referee seeing
:37:41. > :37:45.it both ways, Vinesh getting a take-down, but a reversal onto the
:37:46. > :37:48.back for the Englishwoman, so four points, she is going to get her onto
:37:49. > :37:56.her back, she gets another two points. It will go to 10-8. Was that
:37:57. > :38:02.another reversal? No, she has her legs tied in. It is OK. She does,
:38:03. > :38:06.she gets a reversal, Vinesh, 50 seconds to go in this gold-medal
:38:07. > :38:11.match. Can the Englishwoman pull out of this and score three more points
:38:12. > :38:14.that she needs? She is running out of time, the referee is going to
:38:15. > :38:18.bring them back to their feet, which is good news for Rattigan of
:38:19. > :38:25.England. She needs every second now to try and get something going here.
:38:26. > :38:37.They are giving it their all. They are so fit, these athletes. She has
:38:38. > :38:43.got 30 seconds. She needs to get out of there. She needs three points,
:38:44. > :38:46.she needs more than two. If she spins round for the take-down, she
:38:47. > :38:54.needs to get her onto her back, start scoring. The Indian hanging on
:38:55. > :39:01.for her life here. She is so strong in that defensive position, the
:39:02. > :39:07.Indian. Rattigan, five seconds to go, Vinesh will take the gold
:39:08. > :39:12.medal! The Indian has done it! And the hopes and dreams of Yana
:39:13. > :39:24.Rattigan, I'm afraid, have turned into silver.
:39:25. > :39:28.Disappointment for England's Yana Rattigan, back to the Barry Buddon
:39:29. > :39:32.range, where hopefully we see a bit of history with Scotland boss Mike
:39:33. > :39:35.Jen McIntosh going for a record-breaking fifth Commonwealth
:39:36. > :39:39.Games medal, the most by any Scottish woman at the Commonwealths,
:39:40. > :39:53.in the three position at 50-metre rifle. COMMENTATOR: Li with a 10.3.
:39:54. > :39:55.The wind has just started whistling around the commentary position. Just
:39:56. > :40:07.starting to do the same on the range as well. They are keeping going. I
:40:08. > :40:11.have always found that the wind is slightly less bad on the left-hand
:40:12. > :40:16.side, which is where van Reenen is, and that may help her. 10.64
:40:17. > :40:40.Macintosh. -- 10.64 Macintosh You want a good clean recoil that
:40:41. > :40:51.comes back to you. McIntosh, in fourth at the moment. That is a
:40:52. > :41:04.really good effort. Does not matter. Everyone's eyes on the
:41:05. > :41:10.scoreboard to see what is going on here as we get to the end of this
:41:11. > :41:21.series of five shots. Van Reenen, 9.6, she will be disappointed. You
:41:22. > :41:32.can't get better than a 10.9. That put some daylight between her and
:41:33. > :41:35.the shooter from Singapore. Two go in the first elimination so it is
:41:36. > :41:39.important to be right up the board if you can. I think it is pretty
:41:40. > :41:50.clear who is going to be eliminated at this stage. McKenzie is only 8.6
:41:51. > :41:51.-- she is only 0.6 behind Ridley. The Australian and New Zealand are
:41:52. > :42:14.struggling at the moment. Still there or thereabouts for Jen
:42:15. > :42:20.McIntosh, only 0.6 away from the Indian in first place. She only
:42:21. > :42:23.squeaked into the final, so she has had a bonus already really. She
:42:24. > :42:32.would love to stay, loved to climb up that board. McIntosh is certainly
:42:33. > :42:37.still in with a chance. Just imagine a hometown win for the final medal.
:42:38. > :42:40.This is a temporary stand, and I wonder whether it would stand up to
:42:41. > :42:48.the cheering and jumping up and down. We will see. 10.3 is a really
:42:49. > :42:50.good way to start. Remember, elimination stoned start until we
:42:51. > :42:59.get into the standing element of this, so there is time. Li with a
:43:00. > :43:04.10.5. Van Reenen solid as well. These are amazing scores with the
:43:05. > :43:11.wind. Van Reenen 10.2 is solid but she will want to do better here.
:43:12. > :43:17.Just slowing the breathing down. You will see her hold her breath and the
:43:18. > :43:24.right. The. And there goes the shot. And a 10.6, absolutely beautifully
:43:25. > :43:34.done. It is van Reenen ahead by quite some distance at the moment
:43:35. > :43:46.from Jasmine Ser. Gauswami A decent start from her. Nothing out of the
:43:47. > :43:48.tens for McIntosh. One more for her to go. About a minute and a quarter
:43:49. > :44:10.to go. Macintosh with another 10.4. Van Reenen, look at this. 210.6
:44:11. > :44:15.pleural and a 10.7. Extraordinary. Really good grouping. That is what
:44:16. > :44:24.you want, all of the shots close together. Can she finish this off?
:44:25. > :44:30.She needs a bit of a cushion really because, as you said, in
:44:31. > :44:36.She needs a bit of a cushion really she may drift down as we get towards
:44:37. > :44:40.the eliminated standing shots. But that is the end of the prone
:44:41. > :44:44.shooting. We now have nine minutes. This is the standings. We will go
:44:45. > :44:50.into what you have to do in the standings in just a minute, but look
:44:51. > :44:56.at that, 4.4 points ahead, Esmari van Reenen. Gauswami in the bronze
:44:57. > :45:00.medal position at the moment with Jen McIntosh just a point behind.
:45:01. > :45:04.All very tight for the medals apart from that cushion that van Reenen
:45:05. > :45:09.has built up, but that may be pushed away. She has built up a big lead.
:45:10. > :45:17.Hard to see her surrendering that but anything can happen in this
:45:18. > :45:23.pressure cooker. The seventh and eighth series, both of five shots,
:45:24. > :45:26.250 seconds you get. After the seventh and eighth series, the first
:45:27. > :45:32.to leave, and then we get a single shots. 50 seconds, and somebody
:45:33. > :45:37.leaves after each shot. It is a really exciting format. Indeed, this
:45:38. > :45:42.is the first real test this new final system for all disciplines
:45:43. > :45:47.which are shot at the liver games and the Commonwealth Games. These
:45:48. > :45:51.new rules came into play at the beginning of 2013 to current
:45:52. > :45:59.Olympiad. And so this is one of the first major trials for them, with
:46:00. > :46:02.ticket buying audience, and the full television coverage. World Cups and
:46:03. > :46:07.World Championships, the World Championships this year still to
:46:08. > :46:10.come, they don't quite have the same atmosphere of a Commonwealth Games,
:46:11. > :46:14.so this has been a vital test these new rules and the regulatory board
:46:15. > :46:31.has been watching closely. Let's go wrestling again, England's
:46:32. > :46:46.Mike from the is up in the 70 kilogram division.
:46:47. > :47:19.COMMENTATOR: Desperate to get out of the blocks here, Mike Grundy of
:47:20. > :47:25.England in blue, Galea of Malta in red. He will be looking to exert
:47:26. > :47:31.some authority in this match, get some control. There he is, he is
:47:32. > :47:35.lifting, he has to control the landing. Brilliant throw. Four
:47:36. > :47:41.points. Now he is looking for the four. I think David Galea has
:47:42. > :47:47.injured his head, he has landed badly. Now he does. Galea looks in
:47:48. > :47:55.some trouble here. Grundy has not noticed either. Trying to rack up
:47:56. > :48:00.points. Two more and technical superiority, this will be over very
:48:01. > :48:04.quickly. I am afraid David Galea, after being slammed to the mat, not
:48:05. > :48:10.just winded, but I think somewhat shaken as well. It looks like he has
:48:11. > :48:17.injured his leg actually on the landing. Fifth place for Galea, but
:48:18. > :48:21.a bronze for England, Mike Grundy did not waste any time. He took a
:48:22. > :48:25.long hard look in the mirror, having lost a semifinal, knowing he missed
:48:26. > :48:29.a really good chance of getting into the gold medal match, and he came
:48:30. > :48:34.after this with his third down, ready to go. Really clinical
:48:35. > :48:46.finisher, a well executed leg attack. We will watch it now. He
:48:47. > :48:59.lifts. A really controlled landing. It looks like he is in pain.
:49:00. > :49:07.For Michael Grundy, this will perhaps go some way towards making
:49:08. > :49:14.him feel better after losing the semifinal after losing the match to
:49:15. > :49:20.the Pakistani athlete. He had a massive lead and he managed to lose
:49:21. > :49:23.it, it went out of his grip somehow. He was thrown for a big throw in the
:49:24. > :49:31.second period. Grundy, of England, gets bronze.
:49:32. > :49:35.Welcome back to Pacific Quay. Everybody is chilling out. The
:49:36. > :49:41.weather is blustery in Glasgow today. Before we go back to the
:49:42. > :49:45.wrestling and the shooting, as far as the Royal family are concerned,
:49:46. > :49:51.they have been causing a stir in social media at the Commonwealth
:49:52. > :49:58.Games. Jane Taylor started the trend when she managed to capture a
:49:59. > :50:04.photograph of the Queen, photo bombing her picture. Prince Harry
:50:05. > :50:12.photo bombed the rugby sevens coach for New Zealand. And the royal visit
:50:13. > :50:15.to meet the athletes has caused a lot of attention. Usain Bolt posted
:50:16. > :50:22.a picture, writing, feeling like royalty. Lynsey Sharp tweeted this
:50:23. > :50:28.is how she felt right now with Kate Middleton in the background. Photo
:50:29. > :50:33.opportunities did not go as well for Tom Reid. Saying it was probably the
:50:34. > :50:38.worst time he could have had his eyes closed in a photograph. Before
:50:39. > :50:39.we get to the shooting, there is that break and we will go back to
:50:40. > :51:00.the wrestling. The next bronze medal match. Get
:51:01. > :51:06.ready for the cheers as Fiona Robertson comes out. She has the
:51:07. > :51:12.defeat of her sister to avenge. Muambo, she was incredibly
:51:13. > :51:18.impressive against her twin, Donna Robertson, who fought earlier on.
:51:19. > :51:33.CHEERING. This is the wrestler from camera
:51:34. > :51:40.room. -- Cameroon. Big cheering air. Getting behind the wrestler in red.
:51:41. > :51:45.Fiona Robertson. She and her twin have been inseparable for the past
:51:46. > :51:51.years, doing judo together and getting medals in 2002 at the
:51:52. > :51:55.Commonwealth Games in judo. A bronze medal, Fiona Robertson there, and
:51:56. > :51:59.she decided to come over to wrestling a number of years ago and
:52:00. > :52:06.now we are going for a bronze medal. This will be quite a story. 12 years
:52:07. > :52:12.apart, the bronze medals would be, if she were to pull it off. I must
:52:13. > :52:18.stress that Fiona Robertson of Scotland is up against a very tough
:52:19. > :52:29.fighter, a fighter inside the top 25 at the World Championships. Muambo,
:52:30. > :52:39.in blue, the African champion. Fiona Robertson will be carried by 3000
:52:40. > :52:44.plus people here. Muambo, she beat Robertson's twin sister by ten
:52:45. > :52:49.points earlier today. She has her work cut out, Fiona Robertson. If
:52:50. > :52:56.she wins a medal for Scotland, it would raise the roof. There is not a
:52:57. > :53:05.spare seat in the crowd tonight. A completely packed arena. Muambo, she
:53:06. > :53:06.got the take there. She got two points early on. Robertson needs to
:53:07. > :53:19.be careful. The sisters come from Hamilton in
:53:20. > :53:25.Scotland, not too far down the road. No doubt a lot of friends and family
:53:26. > :53:29.in the audience. But this is an uphill battle. She is up against a
:53:30. > :53:34.woman with huge form in Africa and out the World Championships. She has
:53:35. > :53:41.popped over. The referee not giving points, though. Yes, he has. Two
:53:42. > :53:43.popped over. The referee not giving points. Robertson has to be careful
:53:44. > :53:55.in case she is put onto her back again. She is defending well. That
:53:56. > :53:59.was a lovely technique by Muambo. Robertson did well not to land on
:54:00. > :54:05.her back and get pinned. She is so strong. Muambo. Totally dominating
:54:06. > :54:20.the Scotswoman. Muambo, in wrestling terms, is not a
:54:21. > :54:26.spring chicken. Just about to turn 30. Still over 15 years the junior
:54:27. > :54:31.of Robertson. Robertson, all those years of judo and wrestling, she
:54:32. > :54:38.will have to call on all of those to take on the sheer strength of
:54:39. > :54:43.Muambo. She looks dominant and in control. There she goes, takes her
:54:44. > :54:51.down. That was good defence by Robertson. She was almost a
:54:52. > :54:54.contortionist to get out of it. That must have been painful. She got
:54:55. > :55:03.control of the head and the shoulder. If it goes to term points,
:55:04. > :55:06.Muambo will have the bronze medal and Robertson's hopes of being a
:55:07. > :55:14.double bronze medallist will be over. She has clocked up the points
:55:15. > :55:23.easily. In for the double, can she get behind her for the two? That is
:55:24. > :55:28.it, ten points, all over. 2.27, the clock stops in the first period.
:55:29. > :55:32.Robertson looks dejected but she was up against a tough fighter. Muambo,
:55:33. > :55:37.she is so strong. Robertson, up against a tough fighter. Muambo,
:55:38. > :55:43.cannot use age as an excuse. I am sure she would not. She already has
:55:44. > :55:47.a Commonwealth bronze, won sure she would not. She already has
:55:48. > :55:51.It is quite magnificent she has managed to make it here.
:55:52. > :55:57.It is quite magnificent she has applauding the audience. She no
:55:58. > :56:05.doubt enjoyed the ride. She and her sister putting up a good fight. Both
:56:06. > :56:12.of them losing to Muambo. Look at that, straight onto her back. Again,
:56:13. > :56:18.she gets control of that head and drives through. It is great
:56:19. > :56:25.technique from Muambo. You can tell she is a class wrestler. These
:56:26. > :56:31.sisters have done Scotland so proud. Perhaps retirement is calling for
:56:32. > :56:36.the twins at 45 years old. You never know, it is only four years till the
:56:37. > :56:41.next Commonwealth Games. I am not sure what the record is for the
:56:42. > :56:46.oldest wrestler ever, but at 45, both twins, that is quite something.
:56:47. > :57:00.Sadly, the BBC at Pacific Quay has burst into life. Danny MacAskill.
:57:01. > :57:05.Look at this. There is no denying this man probably has record hits as
:57:06. > :57:16.far as YouTube is concerned. Give him a round of applause! APPLAUSE.
:57:17. > :57:17.While he is not doing too badly with record viewing is from people all
:57:18. > :57:22.over the world, what about somebody record viewing is from people all
:57:23. > :57:25.trying to create a record over at the Barry Bardon shooting range? Jen
:57:26. > :57:31.trying to create a record over at McIntosh from Scotland is in the 50
:57:32. > :57:34.metres rifle three positions. Could she be the most decorated Scottish
:57:35. > :57:52.woman in Commonwealth history? Let's find out.
:57:53. > :58:07.There is the leader at the moment. Van Reenen. McKenzie and Robyn
:58:08. > :58:16.Ridley with it all to do. ANNOUNCER: For the next competition series,
:58:17. > :58:24.load. Start. Expect variable scores. The wind, on cue, starting to get
:58:25. > :58:30.up. You can see the flags in the distance. Really starting to
:58:31. > :58:40.flutter. It is crunch time as we go into the standing shooting and a
:58:41. > :58:48.very solid 10.34 McIntosh. -- 10.3 four McIntosh. Van Reenen with an
:58:49. > :58:53.eight, goodness me, not a great start. She will need to get decent
:58:54. > :59:00.tens in here because she will be up and down in this. The difference
:59:01. > :59:07.will be chipped away if she keeps shooting eights. We talked about her
:59:08. > :59:19.weakness in the standings. -- standing. If people keep shooting
:59:20. > :59:31.10.5s, like Mohamed Taibi, McIntosh with 9.8 will. -- with 9.8, it will
:59:32. > :59:39.swap around. I am liking McIntosh in this. She likes the standing part of
:59:40. > :59:52.the competition. She finished quickly in qualification. Van Reenen
:59:53. > :59:55.is still struggling. She knows her strengths and weaknesses. She will
:59:56. > :00:07.not get carried away when she sees she is top. McIntosh, 10.3, keep
:00:08. > :00:18.doing that and you will be there or thereabouts.
:00:19. > :00:27.McIntosh, another good shot. 10.5. She cannot help but show emotion in
:00:28. > :00:38.that face whether she is happy or not. She is thriving on this crowd.
:00:39. > :00:47.There is pressure. She felt it in the air rifle, in tears when she was
:00:48. > :00:59.eliminated. A little look over to her fiancee. A little nod of the
:01:00. > :01:05.head. He was helping commentating with the men's final, but he said he
:01:06. > :01:09.was off to be nervous now! McKenzie put decent shots in, but 8.4 will
:01:10. > :01:23.not help. They are both looking vulnerable.
:01:24. > :01:31.7.9 four Robyn Ridley and she is eighth and last at the moment and
:01:32. > :01:38.almost two points away from seven place -- seven.
:01:39. > :01:54.Ser is top, so she needs a solid shot. 10.2 will do very nicely. The
:01:55. > :01:59.South African is feeling the heat. Two gold medals at the African
:02:00. > :02:07.Championships in 2007 and three years ago. But she has dropped down.
:02:08. > :02:18.Jen McIntosh. Right in striking distance. 2.4 behind. It sounds a
:02:19. > :02:21.lot. McKenzie in seventh. Six points away from Mohamed Taibi. Something
:02:22. > :02:36.would have to go horribly wrong for them not to be eliminated. Five
:02:37. > :02:45.shots to save yourself. Scotland! Bought the T-shirt and the
:02:46. > :02:50.sweatshirt. Can Jen McIntosh hold this together? It was a really good
:02:51. > :03:09.series last time. You need tens. That will do. Nothing
:03:10. > :03:13.wrong with that. McIntosh's rifle is showing less impact on recall than
:03:14. > :03:22.the others. It hardly moves. Must be something to do with the grip.
:03:23. > :03:31.McKenzie, if she goes out, she will go out fighting. Van Reenen is
:03:32. > :03:43.struggling at the moment. The woman in third. She is having a bit of a
:03:44. > :03:48.blow up here. That's right, she shakes her head. She cannot believe
:03:49. > :03:58.what is happening. Gauswami, in third, she was solid all the way
:03:59. > :04:02.through qualification as well. Ser, 9.9 and 10.4 for Macintosh.
:04:03. > :04:08.through qualification as well. Ser, 9.9 and 10.4 The crowd reacting.
:04:09. > :04:15.Ridley with a 10.4. She is going to go out with her head held high.
:04:16. > :04:26.Mohamed Taibi, she was in sixth, she has hauled herself up into fifth.
:04:27. > :04:31.10.2 will not harm her cause at all. Macintosh, 9.8 her last one. Not as
:04:32. > :04:39.good as the last series but she is still in second place. 9.8 was one
:04:40. > :04:47.of the exceptions, mostly in the tens. That's better, that will make
:04:48. > :04:52.her feel better, 10.3. Again, she shakes her head, thinking about what
:04:53. > :04:57.she has done before that shot. She is a bit far behind Gauswami now. It
:04:58. > :05:06.is really interesting this new format. Li with not a very good set
:05:07. > :05:16.of shots, there. Just a few more shots to get away. Gauswami has got
:05:17. > :05:27.a while to go. She has only got a few shots away. Gauswami in third
:05:28. > :05:40.place. The scoring system has caught up with us now. She is in third
:05:41. > :05:43.place. Mackenzie will have one more shot in this competition before she
:05:44. > :05:53.exits, and this has not been about last series. -- a bad last series.
:05:54. > :05:59.She is waiting for the wind to die down. She has over a minute to get
:06:00. > :06:04.this in. You can see her number flapping in the breeze on her back.
:06:05. > :06:12.A slight puff of smoke from the 22 round. 9.7, that is not outstanding
:06:13. > :06:22.from Mackenzie but she will not be dead last, she will take seventh
:06:23. > :06:27.place and Ridley is in eighth. Please give it up for Australia's
:06:28. > :06:34.Robyn Ridley! APPLAUSE Fourth in the rifle prone, and
:06:35. > :06:36.agonising position TBN, she is in eighth position here. She will be
:06:37. > :06:42.disappointed but at eighth position here. She will be
:06:43. > :06:50.two finals. Absolutely, it is no mean feat, making the final. She was
:06:51. > :06:58.delighted to get to the final and she left it to the last minute. She
:06:59. > :07:08.has two exit. She takes seventh place. -- has to. Now it gets
:07:09. > :07:14.interesting, after each shot we will have an elimination, and only 50
:07:15. > :07:20.seconds to get your shot away. This is the pointy end, the battle for
:07:21. > :07:29.the gold medal. Mohamed Taibi, 0.9 behind of Singapore. -- behind Li.
:07:30. > :07:38.She is still in the battle as well and the Scots will have all eyes on
:07:39. > :07:52.lane F, and that is Macintosh. You have to feel for her after all of
:07:53. > :08:01.this. So, six are left. Li and Mohamed Taibi are tied. Just one
:08:02. > :08:10.shot each. 9.6 from Macintosh, 10.1 from Li. That is better from the
:08:11. > :08:15.South African. 10.6 former Hammer tidy, catapulting her up to fourth.
:08:16. > :08:25.It will be van Reenen. She has been top all the way. But then a series
:08:26. > :08:29.of poor shots means that she has to go. The South African got silver in
:08:30. > :08:35.the rifle prone. She will be really disappointed. She knows that when it
:08:36. > :08:58.comes to the shooting in a standing position, then she has a weakness.
:08:59. > :09:02.Macintosh can still take the gold. She is within striking distance, she
:09:03. > :09:08.has two just maintain her composure and hold it together with this
:09:09. > :09:13.crowd, that is quite extraordinary. Li is in danger, half a point adrift
:09:14. > :09:25.of Mohamed Taibi, her neighbour, the Malaysian. 10.4 from Macintosh.
:09:26. > :09:37.Excellent effort from Li. Mohamed Taibi gets a 10.1. It has not been
:09:38. > :09:41.enough from the Singaporean. Li is in fifth place but a huge cheer
:09:42. > :09:54.because Jen McIntosh has moved into top place by just 0.1 of a point.
:09:55. > :10:00.Li, the Singaporean, the 20-year-old who was actually born in China, from
:10:01. > :10:07.the Singapore rifle Association, and she has 27 four fifths. -- she has
:10:08. > :10:12.disabled for fifth place. The majority of the cloud will like
:10:13. > :10:18.this, .1 ahead, Jen McIntosh ahead of Jasmine Ser. She has been
:10:19. > :10:29.shooting so assuredly. This will be one heck of a battle. You expect
:10:30. > :10:33.Mohamed Taibi to be eliminated next. Gauswami is also 3.5 points behind
:10:34. > :10:42.Jasmine Ser. This will decide who misses out on the medals. Let's see
:10:43. > :10:47.what Macintosh can do here. Another solid shot is what is needed, she
:10:48. > :10:55.shoots quickly but only gets 9.4. Let's see what Ser can do. We're
:10:56. > :11:01.just waiting to see what Ser does. 10.6 from Mohamed Taibi is excellent
:11:02. > :11:06.but it will not be enough. 10.5 from Ser. She jumps back into the lead.
:11:07. > :11:10.It is Mohamed Taibi who will miss out on the medals, she is in fourth
:11:11. > :11:16.place. She made headlines in the Olympic Games when she was heavily
:11:17. > :11:23.pregnant and got a bronze in the ten metre air rifle. She will have two
:11:24. > :11:27.exit, she will be disappointed but she has had a good games overall.
:11:28. > :11:37.Just one point separates first and second. We are now down to the last
:11:38. > :11:42.couple of shots, the last three shots, and the first will decide who
:11:43. > :11:48.takes the bronze medal. You would expected to be Gauswami, she is 3.7
:11:49. > :12:01.behind. Macintosh will not be looking over her shoulder, and she
:12:02. > :12:08.has to try to shut this out now. We are waiting for the chief range
:12:09. > :12:22.officer to get us underway with our next 50 seconds. Load. This is to
:12:23. > :12:25.determine the bronze medal. Start. 50 seconds, this is an important 50
:12:26. > :12:30.seconds if you are one of the three at this range. Macintosh will not be
:12:31. > :12:35.worried about third, she will be going for gold. At least keeping it
:12:36. > :12:45.down to the last shot. She did not like that one at all. Ser, can she
:12:46. > :12:51.respond? Gauswami with a 10.9. The perfect shot from the Indian to
:12:52. > :12:59.finish but we are waiting for Ser. So Macintosh will make up some
:13:00. > :13:09.ground. She is now .6 behind Ser, Gauswami Indian will take bronze.
:13:10. > :13:16.There is a big Indian delegation in front of us. A lot of Indians of
:13:17. > :13:27.course here, a big allegation. The bronze medal for the 25-year-old
:13:28. > :13:31.Indian. It is very tight, though. So, one shot now to work out who
:13:32. > :13:39.takes gold and to take silver. It has come down to this. 0.6 between
:13:40. > :13:46.Macintosh and her mother cannot bear to look. What a way to finish the
:13:47. > :13:51.shooting of the Commonwealth Games. What a way to finish, just one shot
:13:52. > :13:57.apiece to determine who will take the gold medal. The crowd waiting to
:13:58. > :14:07.see if Macintosh can manage it. She has been in this position before.
:14:08. > :14:13.Two medals in Delhi. She has been very composed, Ser. But Macintosh
:14:14. > :14:24.has been one shot better in the last three shots or so. It is a 7.9. Oh
:14:25. > :14:37.dear. Ser, keep your calm and you will get the gold. She is taking her
:14:38. > :14:42.time. It is 9.8, she will take gold. Jasmine Ser of Singapore takes the
:14:43. > :14:48.gold medal. Jen McIntosh of Scotland will have two settle for the silver.
:14:49. > :14:55.The second medal for her of course, it was a bronze yesterday in the 50
:14:56. > :15:00.metre rifle prone. Disappointment for the Scottish crowd here but she
:15:01. > :15:04.has done ever so well. What a magnificent performance by Ser, she
:15:05. > :15:10.kept going and stuck to her guns, if you will excuse the pun! 23 years of
:15:11. > :15:21.age, she had golds and silvers from Delhi. She is very good, but what a
:15:22. > :15:28.performance. From Jen McIntosh. Also 23. The Edinburgh girl. She has just
:15:29. > :15:33.come up the road to the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre. She had us on the
:15:34. > :15:41.end of our seats right to the last few seconds of these Commonwealth
:15:42. > :15:46.Games events. The sole tyre is now around Macintosh but let's not
:15:47. > :15:46.forget, long way from home, Jasmine Ser, brilliant shooting. What a
:15:47. > :16:03.final we have had. It is David herewith Jen McIntosh.
:16:04. > :16:09.You have just stop shaking. Just about. It was incredible. I messed
:16:10. > :16:15.up the last shot spectacularly but it was incredible. Fourth going into
:16:16. > :16:20.the final standing events, at one point you were first. And then as
:16:21. > :16:24.you say it came down to last shot. What was going through your mind?
:16:25. > :16:30.Not a lot I was just trying to keep my heart rate down because it
:16:31. > :16:34.pounding away. I did my best. It turns out my best was not good
:16:35. > :16:39.enough but I am thrilled. Certainly good enough to become the only Scots
:16:40. > :16:41.woman ever to have won five Commonwealth medals, how does it
:16:42. > :16:47.feel? It is incredible, I cannot believe that. Your mother 's record
:16:48. > :16:54.has gone, you have surpassed it! About time! Many congratulations.
:16:55. > :17:00.What a way to end the games and the shooting. Learn. Absolutely, I am so
:17:01. > :17:12.glad to be here. -- the shooting. And. -- the shooting for Scotland. I
:17:13. > :17:17.am just delighted. Congratulations. It may not be the gold medal but she
:17:18. > :17:22.takes home the silver. She is a record breaker, history in the
:17:23. > :17:24.making on BBC Three, the most decorated Scottish woman ever to
:17:25. > :17:29.participate in the Commonwealth Games with five medals to her name.
:17:30. > :17:34.Well done to Jen McIntosh. We will have live boxing on BBC Three in a
:17:35. > :17:39.while. Before that, let's talk more about the women's event because
:17:40. > :17:40.Natasha Jonas has been in action in the lightweight division. Let's see
:17:41. > :17:51.how she got on a bit earlier. COMMENTATOR: As we move into the
:17:52. > :17:58.second round, scheduled for four twos. Natasha Jonas is from England,
:17:59. > :18:02.in blue, a southpaw stance. She took the opening round in a unanimous
:18:03. > :18:11.fashion over Shelley Watts, the 26-year-old Australian. She took
:18:12. > :18:13.national titles in 2011 and 2014. Jonas is targeting the body
:18:14. > :18:23.effectively and using her legs wonderfully. Watts with a cooler
:18:24. > :18:44.thing right to win that exchange for the Australian. -- cuffing. Good
:18:45. > :18:52.play from Jonas once again. Ring on with the right hook. Enjoying
:18:53. > :19:06.success when Natasha Jonas holds her feet. Far too fleeting shots to the
:19:07. > :19:26.body. Jonas is a slippery customer. Her strength is her footwork, she
:19:27. > :19:37.needs to keep that going, Watts struggling to pin her down. The call
:19:38. > :19:42.of, straight coming from Jonas' corner, calling for her to fire
:19:43. > :19:54.straight shots. A good start at the SECC. Watts ending the round on the
:19:55. > :20:08.front search. -- front foot macro. Having more success in the closing
:20:09. > :20:14.30 seconds. -- front foot. She needs to shift her feet left or right,
:20:15. > :20:19.find the angles, she needs to come off with the rear and, making the
:20:20. > :20:28.second phase decisive for the judges. The judges have found it all
:20:29. > :20:33.in favour of Watts. She had a fair amount of success to the body,
:20:34. > :20:38.catching Jonas when she was operating off the ropes. Parity
:20:39. > :20:50.after two completed rounds. Two rounds to go. We are tired. -- tide.
:20:51. > :20:55.All tied up moving into this round. rounds to go. We are tired. -- tide.
:20:56. > :21:05.All tied up Natasha Jonas wearing blue, the Olympic quarterfinalist,
:21:06. > :21:11.when she lost to Katie Taylor. She gets a talking to from the referee
:21:12. > :21:24.there. Her opponent is a two time reigning champion of Australia. A
:21:25. > :21:30.beautiful right uppercut from Jonas. Just before that, she took a hard
:21:31. > :21:40.body shot. Jonas getting back to her range. Every time she holds her
:21:41. > :21:46.feet, Watts is capitalising. She is very capable on the inside, Jonas
:21:47. > :21:53.needs to get back to rangy boxing, getting back to her straight shots,
:21:54. > :22:00.coming back with that checked right hook, to capitalise on those
:22:01. > :22:05.exchanges. That is perfect. Far more competitive round and round number
:22:06. > :22:13.one. Watts beginning to find her range. A good right-hand response
:22:14. > :22:22.from Jonas. Jonas comes into the contest as the reigning European
:22:23. > :22:28.Championship silver medallist. Far less use of the legs from Jonas. All
:22:29. > :22:33.about the judges' perception, you have two convince them you are on
:22:34. > :22:40.top, if you stand and trade, it is 50-50. She needs to get back to
:22:41. > :22:50.range, to her strengths, and make Watts play. Very competitive round,
:22:51. > :22:54.both boxers having success. It's going to be very interesting to see
:22:55. > :23:02.how the judges scored that one, not a lot in it. Very, very close. They
:23:03. > :23:10.were both exchanging, no real clear, decisive winner. Jonas coming
:23:11. > :23:20.back with a straight left hand, straight vacuum, a three punch
:23:21. > :23:28.salvo. -- straight back in. It was touch and go, all three judges
:23:29. > :23:34.favouring Watts. After conceding the opening round in unanimous fashion,
:23:35. > :23:39.she has taken rounds two and three, Natasha Jonas has it all to do,
:23:40. > :23:49.Shelley Watts has it all in her favour. She has to do drag Jonas
:23:50. > :23:55.into a fight, that is getting the best of the exchanges. Natasha Jonas
:23:56. > :24:02.in the blue operating out of the southpaw stance, losing by two
:24:03. > :24:09.rounds to one to the boxer moving forward, Australia's Shelley Watts.
:24:10. > :24:17.She took the opening round in unanimous fashion, Jonas, by using
:24:18. > :24:22.her feet. 30 seconds gone, but the use of legs not in evidence as
:24:23. > :24:29.effectively as it was in the opening round. Watts has taken the two
:24:30. > :24:35.subsequent rounds. She has grown in confidence, starting off very
:24:36. > :24:43.strongly in the fourth round. Beautiful countered left-hand. That
:24:44. > :24:50.causes Watts to touch down, no knock-downs as the referee. Still
:24:51. > :24:57.the Australian on the front foot. Beautiful right hand from Jonas.
:24:58. > :25:05.Watts responding with a left hook. Crunching left hand. These tactics
:25:06. > :25:13.are spot by Watts, she had to take it to Jonas, she is trying to make
:25:14. > :25:25.use of the ring, to give her space. Watts not giving her time to set her
:25:26. > :25:30.feet, or throw shots. Watts keeping up her pursuit. Jonas tumbling to
:25:31. > :25:38.the ground. Inside the closing seconds. Again, the aggressor,
:25:39. > :25:45.caught with a beautiful right, left. Watts continues to take the bout.
:25:46. > :25:54.There has been some affective punch picking from Jonas. Effective
:25:55. > :25:59.aggression. Given that Shelley Watts took rounds two and three by boxing
:26:00. > :26:06.in that fashion, interesting to see how they score that round. Watts
:26:07. > :26:10.chose exactly the right tactics. I think she dominated the last round,
:26:11. > :26:16.not giving Jonas a moment's breathing space. She comes back with
:26:17. > :26:22.a straight left, did not get the count. It should have been account,
:26:23. > :26:34.she touched down. A straight left hand on the button. No count by the
:26:35. > :26:43.referee. Natasha Jonas, and Shelley Watts that -- receiving applause
:26:44. > :26:46.from the crowd. These will be nervous moments for the boxes in
:26:47. > :27:01.anticipation of the official verdict. -- for the boxers. Ladies
:27:02. > :27:08.and gentlemen, we have a split decision on the judges' score. Three
:27:09. > :27:17.to the quarterfinal, in the red corner, Shelley Watts. Shelley Watts
:27:18. > :27:22.through to the quarterfinals of the women's lightweight tournament
:27:23. > :27:25.having eliminated England's Natasha Jonas, the reigning European
:27:26. > :27:30.Championship silver medallist is Jonas, the reigning European
:27:31. > :27:37.after her first appearance at Glasgow 2014. Nice to see her
:27:38. > :27:43.receiving a rapturous applause as she exits the boxing ring. She has
:27:44. > :27:48.been a trailblazer, she is a trailblazer, an ambassador for
:27:49. > :27:53.women's boxing. It has gone in favour of the Australian, Natasha
:27:54. > :27:59.Jonas taking the opening round in unanimous fashion, but then beat in
:28:00. > :28:04.in rounds two and three. A split decision defeat, but Jonas has been
:28:05. > :28:11.eliminated from the Commonwealth Games tournament. The faces in the
:28:12. > :28:18.crowd say at all, real upset, a real disappointment for Teaming them. --
:28:19. > :28:28.for Team England. A shock defeat for England and
:28:29. > :28:36.Natasha Jonas. Tuesday evening, days six, but the atmosphere is building
:28:37. > :28:41.here even though it has got chilly. A busy evening of men's boxing for
:28:42. > :28:48.John in the Dell. I think it is the lightweights starting, plenty of
:28:49. > :28:54.home interest. We have a barrel load of boxes. Charlie Flynn, Joe
:28:55. > :29:00.Fitzpatrick, Josh Taylor, Sean Duffy. That is over the course of
:29:01. > :29:07.the first hour and a half of the evening. Very lively. As it has been
:29:08. > :29:17.every single session. The capacity is kind of four thousand. They make
:29:18. > :29:24.a lot of noise. Making a fair bit of racket behind me. When we have had
:29:25. > :29:28.home nation Jules, like a super heavyweight clash between England
:29:29. > :29:32.and Scotland, it really raised the roof. The great thing about amateur
:29:33. > :29:41.but, so much more than just punching, so much tactical
:29:42. > :29:48.awareness. So much emphasis on footwork, much more a tactical
:29:49. > :29:55.battle than sheer brutality. It is very loud already! For the people
:29:56. > :30:01.who are not boxing aficionados, a lot more to enjoy in the amateur
:30:02. > :30:13.ranks than the professional. What is interesting, unlike the women, there
:30:14. > :30:19.is no head guards in new men's bouts. The head guard debate is not
:30:20. > :30:27.about safety, it is about image. Going off at a tangent, a lot of
:30:28. > :30:33.people involved in golf would like golfers not to wear caps, because it
:30:34. > :30:40.is hard to see what people look like. From an awareness point of
:30:41. > :30:53.view, a lot of people in golf would love golfers, they would like to see
:30:54. > :31:00.their faces. That is why survey -- Seve Ballesteros was so
:31:01. > :31:03.recognisable. A lot of people in boxing don't want the protagonists
:31:04. > :31:09.hidden behind head guards, you cannot tell who they are, what they
:31:10. > :31:14.are like, what are their feelings and emotions, are they hurt? The
:31:15. > :31:20.counterbalance, a lot of surveys have been done by the governing body
:31:21. > :31:27.showing the likelihood of concussion, that is a big issue in
:31:28. > :31:30.sport in Rugby, American football, the likelihood of concussion is
:31:31. > :31:36.double if they boxer is wearing a head guard, as opposed to not being
:31:37. > :31:43.protected. Hence the fact they are not wearing them. The counterbalance
:31:44. > :31:51.is if they're not wearing a head guard, the likelihood of cuts are
:31:52. > :31:56.greater. It could impact on the boxer's prospects in the next round.
:31:57. > :32:03.Having said that, interesting how very few fights have been stopped
:32:04. > :32:09.because of cuts. The reason is, the standard of the competition has
:32:10. > :32:15.levelled out much more than in days gone by. People watching 10-20 years
:32:16. > :32:21.ago, they remember a lot of one-sided fight ending early, you do
:32:22. > :32:27.not get that these days, a much more equal playing field from the major
:32:28. > :32:31.boxing nations to the smaller ones. From an image point of view, good,
:32:32. > :32:38.from safety, it is good, but there is a lobby nonetheless to get head
:32:39. > :32:43.guards back in time for the Olympic Games in Rio. It is one of those
:32:44. > :32:49.debates where there is no right or wrong answer. The politicians are
:32:50. > :32:54.boxing will decide what to do with the sport going forward. As it is,
:32:55. > :33:05.we have the first boxes about to come into the ring. Time for some R

:33:16. > :33:21.The decibel level at the SECC, on the banks of the River Clyde,
:33:22. > :33:26.continuing to rise in anticipation of the opening contest. We start off
:33:27. > :33:37.in the men's 60 kilograms lightweight division. The man
:33:38. > :33:45.applauding, 22 years of age. He has grown in confidence in this contest.
:33:46. > :33:53.The man who has beaten him before, the contest was something to behold.
:33:54. > :33:59.Poise, considerable fire. Against Chad Mills, a hard punching compact
:34:00. > :34:13.boxer from New Zealand. 22 years old. Going to be a contrast of
:34:14. > :34:21.styles. Cordina has got the skills to win this contest. I want to see
:34:22. > :34:26.him using that tonight. It is a tough fight but it is one that he
:34:27. > :34:38.can win. These are the five judges presiding over the contest. Their
:34:39. > :34:53.scores will be used to determine the outcome. Representing Wales, Joe
:34:54. > :35:12.Cordina. In the blue corner, representing New Zealand, Chad
:35:13. > :35:18.Milnes. The referee is from Belarus. Well, you just saw from the low
:35:19. > :35:22.camera angle as the boxers came together for the final instructions,
:35:23. > :35:27.the advantage in height and reach which is enjoyed by Joe Cordina. As
:35:28. > :35:31.we move into the opening round of this 60 kilograms lightweight
:35:32. > :35:36.quarterfinal. Scheduled for 33-minute rounds. The boxer wearing
:35:37. > :35:43.red operates from the southpaw stance although he can switch hit
:35:44. > :35:51.effectively. Joe Cordina, 23 from the boxing club which is operated by
:35:52. > :35:55.Tony Borg. His opponent wearing blue from New Zealand is chair Milnes,
:35:56. > :36:01.also 22 years of age, a compact figure. Favouring short, arcing
:36:02. > :36:04.punches from short range, both of them are contesting their third bout
:36:05. > :36:10.of the tournament at the quarterfinal stage. Joe Cordina
:36:11. > :36:18.coming out as a southpaw, that is tactical. Against and Orthodox
:36:19. > :36:25.opponent who will struggle to land his right hand when Cortina is a
:36:26. > :36:29.southpaw. He then tends to bring his left leg around which then brings
:36:30. > :36:35.him onto the right hand, so he has to watch himself coming forward.
:36:36. > :36:39.Here now, switching back to Orthodox, getting a bit scrappy on
:36:40. > :36:43.the inside but I want to see Joe Cordina tonight boxing with a bit of
:36:44. > :36:46.skill and distance. He is very talented, Joe Cordina. He does not
:36:47. > :36:51.need to be mixing it up on the inside. Box at this terms and he
:36:52. > :36:59.will have the tools to win the contest. If he gets his tactics
:37:00. > :37:03.right. -- at distance. And arcing hook went in from Chad Milnes, it
:37:04. > :37:10.was wide of the mark. That is a good left hand out of the southpaw stance
:37:11. > :37:14.before moving away to his right. Continuing to operate as a southpaw
:37:15. > :37:20.for the moment. A good attack from the southpaw stance and then
:37:21. > :37:27.whipping into the body. The man from New Zealand is struggling to find
:37:28. > :37:31.his range at this point in the bout. At close quarters. He is trying to
:37:32. > :37:35.get his work into the body. The referee is not calling break, there
:37:36. > :37:40.is a new interpretation of the Olympic style boxing rules,
:37:41. > :37:50.remember. Now the referee gets some distance between them once again.
:37:51. > :37:55.With Joe Cordina boxing on the outside, he has two may be feint and
:37:56. > :37:56.draw his opponent to trigger him and make him come forward and then you
:37:57. > :38:01.can bring him onto the shots. make him come forward and then you
:38:02. > :38:06.is a good example, waiting, drawing him on and bringing him onto the
:38:07. > :38:09.shot. Good boxing from Cordina. As he
:38:10. > :38:12.shot. Good boxing from Cordina. As New Zealander will become frustrated
:38:13. > :38:16.and come over the front foot, he should do, and that will give
:38:17. > :38:26.Cordina more opportunities to land punches. This has been a rather
:38:27. > :38:32.circumspect first round but Joe Cordina has been boxing in great
:38:33. > :38:34.fashion. Colin Jones removes his mouthpiece and prepares to issue
:38:35. > :38:45.instructions. A very good opening round the Joe Cordina. -- for Joe
:38:46. > :38:49.Cordina. Yes, Colin Jones will be pleased with the work that Cordina
:38:50. > :38:55.has done in that round. Calling the shots there. He waited a little bit
:38:56. > :38:59.too long. That is where he needs to feint and draw his opponent. We are
:39:00. > :39:05.seeing that shot again. Cordina landed lovely punches in that round.
:39:06. > :39:16.I would imagine that Cordina has won the round. He has come an unanimous
:39:17. > :39:24.fashion. -- he has, in unanimous fashion. John Inverdale talked about
:39:25. > :39:29.the computer scoring system. As we move into the second round of the 60
:39:30. > :39:34.kilograms lightweight quarterfinal. One win away from a place on the
:39:35. > :39:41.podium. The man in blue occupying the centre of the ring, operating
:39:42. > :39:45.with an orthodox stance. The man in red is Joe Cordina. That was a good
:39:46. > :39:56.uppercut and a left hook crashing home on the body and jaw of Joe
:39:57. > :40:00.Cordina from Chad Milnes. Sparring with the jab, getting through with a
:40:01. > :40:03.good straight left to the body. He will be aware of the fact he has
:40:04. > :40:07.conceded the opening round, his corner would have told him about
:40:08. > :40:15.that which is eliciting a more aggressive start to the second round
:40:16. > :40:18.for the man from New Zealand. It is crucial to hit and move and go after
:40:19. > :40:23.the side occasionally to push your man back and always keep on the back
:40:24. > :40:30.foot, the judges like to see foot punching as well. Some boxers prefer
:40:31. > :40:33.to work on the back foot but you have to keep the judges happy by
:40:34. > :40:37.counterattacking and pushing your opponent back and that is what Joe
:40:38. > :40:43.Cordina has to do. Movement is crucial, hold your feet and bring
:40:44. > :40:47.Chad Milnes into it. Cordina is getting onto the front foot.
:40:48. > :40:50.Left-hand whipped into the midsection. An effective response
:40:51. > :40:59.from what was a bright start from Chad Milnes. Now back as an orthodox
:41:00. > :41:06.boxer. Two shocks have been buffeted effectively. Keeping the onrushing
:41:07. > :41:12.Chad Milnes at bay. A left hook sailed harmlessly over head, over
:41:13. > :41:15.the head of Joe Cordina. He is currently Square. Now changing to
:41:16. > :41:22.the southpaw stance and they both exchange straight shots. His feet
:41:23. > :41:27.were a little bit too square, they just got caught, drawing his man in.
:41:28. > :41:31.He was caught in his own trap, he set the trap with his hands loaded
:41:32. > :41:32.draw the opponent in but he was caught. He
:41:33. > :41:38.draw the opponent in but he was reaction is a bit. Cordina needs to
:41:39. > :41:46.be in and out with his feet and then out again. Chad Milnes is continuing
:41:47. > :41:51.to hook away, left and right to the body, it is effective for the Kiwi.
:41:52. > :41:57.That right hand for Cordina was not far away. It elicited gasps from the
:41:58. > :42:01.crowd here. The final 30 seconds of what has been a competitive round,
:42:02. > :42:04.both boxers having their moments of success, can it produce a big finish
:42:05. > :42:13.in an effort to influence the judges? It is approaching the ten
:42:14. > :42:17.second mark of this second round. At close quarters but the referee
:42:18. > :42:21.allows the boxers to work away. Both of them take the opportunity to do
:42:22. > :42:26.so before retreating to distance once again. There is the bell to
:42:27. > :42:30.conclude round number two. Chad Milnes shakes his head, suggesting
:42:31. > :42:35.that he is frustrated after his bright start to the round but
:42:36. > :42:41.Cordina came back into it around a third of the way through. Cordina is
:42:42. > :42:45.still in second gear. A lovely right hook and he moves around. This is
:42:46. > :42:54.where he was caught. He went to square. As the round went on he
:42:55. > :43:01.started to find his rhythm, boxing in and out. Let's have a look here
:43:02. > :43:04.again. All of them going for Cordina, he is boxing well within
:43:05. > :43:18.himself, now he just has too see out the round. -- has to see it out. He
:43:19. > :43:25.boxed in Montr?al in 76 and was unlucky not to take the world title
:43:26. > :43:35.in Nevada. And he suffered an awful gash across his nose in his world
:43:36. > :43:41.Into the final round. Continuing to Into the final round. Continuing to
:43:42. > :43:46.wearing red. Joe Cordina switches his stance between orthodox
:43:47. > :43:52.southpaw. Left uppercut from the man in blue, Chad from New Zealand. In
:43:53. > :43:57.this round now, the Joe Cordina jab is the most important punch because
:43:58. > :44:01.you just have to keep him at bay, keep him off balance by using the
:44:02. > :44:04.jab, and set yourself up for the right hand to comb through the
:44:05. > :44:11.middle. The jab has today the work. -- come. He does not have to take
:44:12. > :44:18.shots like that, just hit and move, you know that he will come because
:44:19. > :44:21.he is behind. That work is being exhibited beautifully by Joe
:44:22. > :44:28.Cordina. They lock horns at the centre of the Ring and the referee
:44:29. > :44:33.issues the break command. In his opening bout Chad Milnes beat the
:44:34. > :44:42.man from Bangladesh by a unanimous decision. And he beat Lazarus
:44:43. > :44:48.showing the work -- Lazarus in unanimous fashion. Joe Cordina
:44:49. > :44:55.prevailed against his fellow home nation boxer with a split decision
:44:56. > :45:04.and then he faces a man with similar intent, Chad Milnes got in with a
:45:05. > :45:12.good right hand, Cordina is on the ropes. He comes back with a
:45:13. > :45:14.thrusting left which gets through. Cordina's second contest was a
:45:15. > :45:22.brilliant victory over David Gauthier, a man who had beaten him
:45:23. > :45:26.earlier this summer. That left hook was not far away. Cordina has to
:45:27. > :45:32.remain concentrated on the task at hand. A good shot from the man in
:45:33. > :45:36.blue. He is getting better but he is failing to take his opportunities on
:45:37. > :45:40.the inside, Chad Milnes. For a small guy, you would imagine he would
:45:41. > :45:44.fancy short-range work but he is tied up on the inside, he should be
:45:45. > :45:49.working better, the New Zealander. He is dangerous if you let him in on
:45:50. > :46:03.the inside. Cordina has a plan just to halt him. Cordina is winning this
:46:04. > :46:07.contest, remember. In the neutral corner, Cordina was caught with a
:46:08. > :46:13.couple of hard head shots from Chad Milnes. That was a beautiful views
:46:14. > :46:17.of the feet from Joe Cordina. Changing direction and hitting his
:46:18. > :46:23.opponent so often that he must think he is surrounded. Forcing his
:46:24. > :46:30.opponent backwards, he is on the ropes. A hard left. A sporting
:46:31. > :46:34.embrace between the two boxers. There is little doubt about the man
:46:35. > :46:37.who will progress to the semifinals, holding his arms aloft in
:46:38. > :46:45.acknowledgement of the plot that he receives from the SEC crowd. -- of
:46:46. > :46:48.the applause. Chad Milnes had his moments but they were fewer and
:46:49. > :46:54.further between the success enjoyed by the boxer in red. It was close in
:46:55. > :46:57.the final round but there was only one winner. Overall he was boxing
:46:58. > :47:02.better than his opponent, Joe Cordina. Better tactically. Caught
:47:03. > :47:06.on the ropes here and there. This was right at the very end but he has
:47:07. > :47:17.won the contest in the first two rounds. The judges have scored a win
:47:18. > :47:24.by unanimous decision, and through to the semifinal, in the red corner,
:47:25. > :47:30.representing Wales, Joe Cordina! Joe Cordina has got himself twice on the
:47:31. > :47:38.Commonwealth Games medal roster, unanimous points decision winner.
:47:39. > :47:44.Against New Zealand's Chad Milnes. The tune of Delilah is reverberating
:47:45. > :47:52.around the SECC. Chad Milnes exits the ropes, helped by Joe Cordina,
:47:53. > :47:56.but there is no mistaking the victor. Arms raised aloft by the
:47:57. > :48:01.referee. Joe Cordina from Saint Josephs boxing club, an enormous
:48:02. > :48:06.grin of delight. He got himself a Commonwealth Games piece of
:48:07. > :48:10.championship hardware. The only question that remains is what colour
:48:11. > :48:15.will it be, he is assured at least a bronze because both semifinalists if
:48:16. > :48:20.they lose in their final four contest will receive a Commonwealth
:48:21. > :48:29.Games boxing bronze medal. But Joe Cordina is applauding the crowd as
:48:30. > :48:33.he makes his way out of the SECC. Is I'm sure John will be keen to talk
:48:34. > :48:41.to the man who has just put his place in the final four. Good for
:48:42. > :48:46.Wales to beat New Zealand? Oh, yes, we play them in rugby all the time!
:48:47. > :48:54.You have a medal, how fantastic is that? Amazing, but the job is not
:48:55. > :49:00.finished. Until my flag is up, and the national anthem is playing, I
:49:01. > :49:06.will not be happy. I have two hard fights left. You are chefs, I have
:49:07. > :49:13.to ask you about the food in the village? I am not quite as chefs, I
:49:14. > :49:18.changed in college, I cannot eat most of it, I had to watch my
:49:19. > :49:30.weight. What is your favourite? I like to eat in Nandos, ie there are
:49:31. > :49:41.couple of times a week. You have a semifinal ahead, well done tonight.
:49:42. > :49:48.From Wales to Scotland. All smiles in the crowd at the SECC.
:49:49. > :49:51.The man who has taken up residence in the red corner is Charlie Flynn,
:49:52. > :50:11.ahead of his 60 kilograms fight. meet the boxes. Boxing out of the
:50:12. > :50:33.red corner, representing Scotland, Charlie Flynn. Boxing out of the
:50:34. > :50:55.blue corner, representing Gardner Jesse Lartey. Three, three-minute
:50:56. > :51:02.rounds. Charlie Flynn retreats to the red corner, awaiting the opening
:51:03. > :51:11.bell. This 60 kilograms last eight lightweight bout under between the
:51:12. > :51:20.boxer wearing red, just 20, making a bright start against Lartey from
:51:21. > :51:35.Ghana, part of a seven man boxing team, no women present. That is a
:51:36. > :51:44.cutting rights hook. Flynn taking the contest to the slightly taller
:51:45. > :51:50.Dunedin. A tricky contest for Flynn against a very capable southpaw in
:51:51. > :52:14.Lartey. He likes to sit back, patient, Flynn. -- carnet. --
:52:15. > :52:21.Ghanian. It will be a tricky opening. Going onto the back foot,
:52:22. > :52:28.had to watch what he is doing, Flynn. A good left hand from Flynn.
:52:29. > :52:49.That brought a round of applause from the crowd. Lartey sitting on
:52:50. > :52:55.the back first. -- back foot. Lartey displaying plenty of patients, a
:52:56. > :53:03.jolting right jab. He touched down with the glove, the referee calling
:53:04. > :53:13.stop immediately. Lucky not to have a knock-down called against him. He
:53:14. > :53:17.walked straight onto the shot. A relatively soft one can be more
:53:18. > :53:23.powerful if you walk onto it. That was an example there. The 23rd
:53:24. > :53:30.ranked lightweight in the world, the second highest ranked in this
:53:31. > :53:38.tournament. Lartey coming onto the front foot, driven back to the ropes
:53:39. > :53:46.by Flynn. The referee allowing them to walk away. The heads rubbing
:53:47. > :53:53.together. We saw the petroleum jelly around the eyebrows. He had a cut in
:53:54. > :54:04.the first contest, he has two watch what he is doing. He has to do is
:54:05. > :54:12.delete Mac a dipping motion with his head to the left. -- he has two have
:54:13. > :54:19.a dipping motion with their head to the left. The referee having a good
:54:20. > :54:27.look at Charlie Flynn. The skin appears to be intact. Lovely little
:54:28. > :54:34.overhand right. Probably moving too quickly into range. A good job he
:54:35. > :54:39.did not throw that one. The referee calling stop as he went to wipe the
:54:40. > :54:45.gloves clean. The opening round gathering in favour of the Scotsman
:54:46. > :54:53.in unanimous fashion. -- going in favour.
:54:54. > :55:04.You have to watch the heads. Lartey, wearing blue, representing
:55:05. > :55:24.Gardner, boxing out of the southpaw stance. -- representing Ghana. Will
:55:25. > :55:33.he change tactics? A lot of grappling and mauling taking place.
:55:34. > :55:39.Resembling mixed martial arts there. A glancing left hand from Lartey.
:55:40. > :55:45.Lyn has to concentrate throwing this right and left hook as his opponent
:55:46. > :55:50.is coming towards him. He will have a better chance of landing it. He
:55:51. > :55:56.has to try and trigger the attack from the opponent, bringing in onto
:55:57. > :56:06.the left hook. When he's reaching, the legs are crossing. He is clever,
:56:07. > :56:15.the man from Ghana, on the back foot. Lartey coming forward with a
:56:16. > :56:29.three punch for a comment did not connect. A good operator, the
:56:30. > :56:42.national champion of Ghana, sharing a gym with Davies, another man from
:56:43. > :56:46.Ghana. Flynn should have punished Lartey, he crossed his legs. You
:56:47. > :56:51.have to look out for these opportunities, all about having fast
:56:52. > :57:04.reactions, triggering your opponent, and using fast reflex is.
:57:05. > :57:13.-- reflexes. The backhand up the cat -- uppercut got through. Another
:57:14. > :57:30.left hook getting through. Lartey injuring some bad -- enduring some
:57:31. > :57:35.bad moments. That is a better position for Flynn to be in, keeping
:57:36. > :57:42.his man on the ropes. That makes his opponent's legs come square. Do not
:57:43. > :57:50.let him off there. Lartey skipping out of the corner, at close range
:57:51. > :57:57.again. Lartey continuing to be poised. Trying to counter shots.
:57:58. > :58:05.Flynn was short with the right hand. The one, two came back. The man from
:58:06. > :58:10.Ghana thought he had done enough. The greater volume came from this
:58:11. > :58:30.man. Quite a scrappy round, both boxes enjoying some success.
:58:31. > :58:33.man. Quite a scrappy round, both boxers. Lartey making the mistake of
:58:34. > :58:43.coming short, good reactions from Flynn. Good reactions, clever. All
:58:44. > :58:44.three judges favouring the man from Ghana, all
:58:45. > :58:51.three judges favouring the man from Ghana, square going into the final
:58:52. > :58:59.round. A close, close round. All on this one now.
:59:00. > :59:12.Three minutes between Charlie Flynn, from Motherwell, and Lartey
:59:13. > :59:21.of Ghana and a place on the Commonwealth Games medal rostrum.
:59:22. > :59:35.The national champion at 60 kilograms of Scotland, Charlie
:59:36. > :59:44.Flynn. 30 seconds have gone here. Ten Lartey waiting. Who can impose
:59:45. > :59:51.their style on this bout? The scores are dictating the tactics. Flynn has
:59:52. > :59:58.to close that gap down. He has to get on the front foot, deny him the
:59:59. > :00:07.room and the space. Sustain the attacks. But this man under the
:00:08. > :00:13.cosh. Has to go for it now, Flynn. Nice change of shots. Lartey coming
:00:14. > :00:22.through the right-hand, Flynn with the left. Approaching the midway
:00:23. > :00:29.point of the third round. Lartey backed into his own corner. The big
:00:30. > :00:41.left-hand gaining over the head. The referee has to intervene. A check to
:00:42. > :00:50.right-hand from Lartey, affected. -- checked right hand. Lynne has to be
:00:51. > :00:59.more aggressive now, as to push his opponent now. -- Flynn. He has two
:01:00. > :01:08.beyond the front foot. They always tend to favour the man going forward
:01:09. > :01:16.when they are this close. A right uppercut attempted from Lartey, not
:01:17. > :01:22.connecting. Flynn shaking his head. Do not work on the inside, he has to
:01:23. > :01:32.create space and room. Lartey hast to work on the inside. A right
:01:33. > :01:40.uppercut to catch the onrushing Lartey. A lovely little shot from
:01:41. > :01:46.Flynn, skilful little man with that right uppercut. He has to go
:01:47. > :01:51.downstairs to the body as well. That was a clean shot from Flynn. If they
:01:52. > :02:00.can get back to distance, we will see a firefight, five seconds to go.
