:00:24. > :00:29.Good evening, we are nine hours into the opening day of the Commonwealth

:00:30. > :00:35.Games here in Glasgow, and it has been a golden day for England so

:00:36. > :00:42.far, three gold medal so far, two of them have come at Strathclyde part

:00:43. > :00:44.in the men's and women's triathlon and there has been another ad the

:00:45. > :00:50.Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. That is where we are going very shortly. We

:00:51. > :00:55.have a plethora of champions both Olympic and Paralympic. In fact, if

:00:56. > :00:56.they all brought along they are hardware, the presentation podium

:00:57. > :00:58.would probably collapse because Jonathan Edwards is there alongside

:00:59. > :01:03.Dame Sarah Storey anther Chris Hoy himself. We have been enjoying the

:01:04. > :01:08.action from the fastest venue of these Commonwealth Games. Reaction

:01:09. > :01:16.first of all, Jonathan, to Sir Bradley Wiggins my fourth silver or

:01:17. > :01:29.of his career. We have not heard from him yet, hopefully we will

:01:30. > :01:38.speak to them soon, but I guess it is a step forward for the team, they

:01:39. > :01:43.struggled in the World Championships as a British team.

:01:44. > :01:50.They have got back on track with Bradley given them some leadership.

:01:51. > :01:53.Definitely, I think the important thing is to get a -- and get a medal

:01:54. > :01:54.and rebuild the team and look to the future.

:01:55. > :01:56.This is clearly a master plan for Sir Bradley.

:01:57. > :01:57.He is talking about going on to Rio and perhaps going for a fifth

:01:58. > :01:59.gold-medal now. I think that is right, he has his eyes on the total

:02:00. > :02:04.number of gold-medal scum of the record held by this man next to me

:02:05. > :02:05.he wants to go from seven to eight Olympic medals.

:02:06. > :02:08.He has not given up on the road just yet, he is focusing on Parry Ruby,

:02:09. > :02:11.as well. Yes, that is one of the iconic races in the cycling

:02:12. > :02:17.calendar, one that he would love to win.

:02:18. > :02:20.In the next couple of years that would be a massive target.

:02:21. > :02:23.Ladies and gentlemen, I know you are waiting for the men's team sprint, I

:02:24. > :02:28.will leave it with you. Thanks very much, Hazel, back to you

:02:29. > :02:33.soon, but it is the team sprint that features triple Olympic champion

:02:34. > :02:38.team Kent -- Jason Kenny. He struggled this morning, almost

:02:39. > :02:43.like a second chance saloon, wasn't it? Yes, he ended up against the

:02:44. > :02:46.fastest qualifiers would was always going to be tough.

:02:47. > :02:52.Unfortunately he was knocked out but he came back in and now he is up

:02:53. > :02:56.against it tomorrow. I think the English team are very happy to be in

:02:57. > :03:01.the final edit will be a big channel -- challenge. The New Zealand team

:03:02. > :03:04.exceptionally strong at the moment. Sarah, in terms of the team and what

:03:05. > :03:14.they have had to do, obviously Philip Hinds leads it now, and it is

:03:15. > :03:20.keeping it on the wheel of those two guys who are more experienced than

:03:21. > :03:25.him. Yes, we saw Kian this morning

:03:26. > :03:32.alluded to the back of Jason Kenny's deal. It is exactly the same

:03:33. > :03:38.things Kris Hughes to do. -- glued to the back. -- Sir Chris used to

:03:39. > :03:43.do. But we have seen the great British

:03:44. > :03:46.team raise their game? They did, a lot of criticism was levelled at

:03:47. > :03:51.them after the World Championships this year, disappointing not to make

:03:52. > :03:53.the last four but they should be proud of themselves.

:03:54. > :03:57.It was a great ground this morning, technically good, quick, everyone

:03:58. > :04:02.did their job, it was not just one superstar, it was at team effort.

:04:03. > :04:05.There is a big gap to the New Zealanders but anything can happen

:04:06. > :04:09.and I think they will prove a little bit. They may take a 10th author of

:04:10. > :04:16.that time. Let's go to Simon and Rob now, first

:04:17. > :04:20.of all it is the bronze medal race. We're looking at Canada, Hugo

:04:21. > :04:30.Barrette, the national champion. Joey the sprint record holder.

:04:31. > :04:36.-- Joey Vilas. They are up against Australia.

:04:37. > :04:39.Matthew plates are -- Matthew Glaetzer. Nathan Hart and Shane

:04:40. > :04:43.Perkins, and old campaigner in the Commonwealth Games over the years.

:04:44. > :04:48.He has been struggling with a back injury but has a chance of claiming

:04:49. > :04:56.a bronze medal. He was the winner of the sprint in Delhi four years ago.

:04:57. > :05:03.And away they go. Look at the power from those two as they get out of

:05:04. > :05:09.the blocks. The rider for Australia is Nathan Hart, Hugo Barrette for

:05:10. > :05:12.calendar -- Canada, who just launched himself out of the starting

:05:13. > :05:16.gate. A good opening lap by both squads,

:05:17. > :05:24.both teams qualifying well this morning. 44.027 for Australia, what

:05:25. > :05:30.could they do if Shane Perkins was at full fitness? That is the

:05:31. > :05:31.question. It is Matthew Glaetzer now for

:05:32. > :05:37.Australia. Australia leading the way It is Matthew Glaetzer now for

:05:38. > :05:44.here, and at the moment heading to the bronze medal. Glaetzer is a man

:05:45. > :05:49.in form. There becomes, 43.709 and they win by over one second, 1.3

:05:50. > :05:55.seconds clear of Canada, and a decisive claiming of the bronze

:05:56. > :05:59.medal by the Australian trio. That was quick, a good ride by the

:06:00. > :06:06.Australians. Having Shane Perkins slightly out of form, what could

:06:07. > :06:12.they do? What could they pull out? It is so critical it is such a short

:06:13. > :06:24.event over this distance that any small changes can have a dramatic

:06:25. > :06:29.effect on the outcome. There is the morbid -- the moment Perkins leads

:06:30. > :06:32.Glaetzer through. Australia had been in a winning

:06:33. > :06:35.position long before that, right from that opening lap from Nathan

:06:36. > :06:38.Hart. This final went to form perfectly

:06:39. > :06:42.for the Australians, don't think we were expecting any other outcome,

:06:43. > :06:48.they went out there and delivered their ride. What an absolute

:06:49. > :06:51.monster. We will see a lot more of Matthew

:06:52. > :06:56.Glaetzer, the 21-year-old, tomorrow, as we head into the latter stages of

:06:57. > :07:01.the match sprint. He is through to the quarterfinals and he was the

:07:02. > :07:04.fastest qualifier today. There will be some battle in the front end

:07:05. > :07:09.probably between the Australian riders and those from New Zealand,

:07:10. > :07:15.Jason Kenny getting through into the quarterfinals. There are the English

:07:16. > :07:21.trio, waiting for the final against New Zealand. Philip Hinds on the

:07:22. > :07:26.left-hand side, Kian Emadi in the centre, and the Olympic champion.

:07:27. > :07:33.Both of those are all in the champions in the team sprint. But

:07:34. > :07:37.they are up against a really good team here, the world champions.

:07:38. > :07:41.Eddie Dawkins, Ethan Mitchell and Sam Webster. These were the riders

:07:42. > :07:47.who claimed that the gold-medal back in February in Colombia.

:07:48. > :07:54.Half a second separates these two squads from qualification. 43.2 for

:07:55. > :08:06.New Zealand, 43.7 for the English squad. The English team here have

:08:07. > :08:13.got work to do. Off the back of their qualification from the

:08:14. > :08:15.individual sprint this morning with Hindes and Kenny, I was pleasantly

:08:16. > :08:23.surprised with their performance to get into this final. It has been a

:08:24. > :08:29.busy day for a lot of these sprinters. It is not just about

:08:30. > :08:35.qualification for the individual and team sprints, it is the warm-ups and

:08:36. > :08:41.the warm down, also, it compounds everything. The psychological

:08:42. > :08:51.effects that has on you, the stresses and strains.

:08:52. > :08:59.The 52nd countdown has started ahead of this gold medal race in the men's

:09:00. > :09:06.team sprint, the final race at the velodrome in the East End of

:09:07. > :09:10.Glasgow. That macro the 50 -- the 50 second countdown.

:09:11. > :09:22.Final adjustments made. We are almost ready to go. The race for

:09:23. > :09:39.gold, ten seconds away. We have a bit of a problem. Hindes

:09:40. > :09:46.in the starting gate, not quite sure what is going on, whether it is the

:09:47. > :09:50.bike or the gate itself. Late adjustments, it has to be

:09:51. > :09:55.millimetre perfect here. The bike held in the starters gate, there is

:09:56. > :10:04.clearly a slight issue here for Philip Hindes. He will let everyone

:10:05. > :10:07.else sought that out and retain his focus and not be distracted by what

:10:08. > :10:09.is going on around him. You have to be mentally strong than something

:10:10. > :10:14.like this happens, just concentrate on your own effort.

:10:15. > :10:20.Iain Dyer, the coach on the side of the track, obviously was not happy

:10:21. > :10:26.with the way that bike was set. They are just asking the commissaires to

:10:27. > :10:32.rejig it. It is so important the start, so if the bike is not held

:10:33. > :10:35.quite right, it is not solid on the back wheel, then when you launch

:10:36. > :10:39.yourself out, the bike can move underneath you and it can have an

:10:40. > :10:42.effect on that opening half lap. There is an incredible mode of power

:10:43. > :10:46.that goes through the bike, particularly as it leaves the

:10:47. > :10:53.starters gate. I certainly would not want to be a link in Philip

:10:54. > :10:56.Hindes's chain, that is for sure. Now we are ready to go. Philip

:10:57. > :11:01.Hindes on the opening lap for England. The final of the men's team

:11:02. > :11:06.sprint. World champions in black. England in

:11:07. > :11:12.the back straight in the red and white.

:11:13. > :11:15.And away they go. Philip Hindes the Olympic champion,

:11:16. > :11:18.leading off for England. At the front, Ethan Mitchell four New

:11:19. > :11:23.Zealand in leading off on their first lap.

:11:24. > :11:30.England slightly down by a 10th of a second. Good start by both squads.

:11:31. > :11:33.There is not much in it, less than a 10th of a second in this. This is a

:11:34. > :11:36.tremendous final. The world champions being put under pressure

:11:37. > :11:40.there as they come up towards the line again.

:11:41. > :11:45.England had just under three tenths of a second down, leading the way is

:11:46. > :11:51.Dawkins for the world champions, New Zealand. He is up against Kian

:11:52. > :11:55.Emadi. Into the finishing straight, towards the line, gold four New

:11:56. > :11:59.Zealand, 43.181, the Commonwealth Games and record has gone and it is

:12:00. > :12:10.called to the world champions from New Zealand and England settle for

:12:11. > :12:14.silver. -- it is gold. I think on paper that went to form

:12:15. > :12:21.but that was a great opening lap thereby Philip Hinds.

:12:22. > :12:24.Superb ride from the world champions, blisteringly fast, but

:12:25. > :12:34.they had to be because they were pushed by England, and put it

:12:35. > :12:37.together at another decent ride. But Eddie Dawkins, Ethan Mitchell

:12:38. > :12:41.and Sam Webster came into this competition as the trio to beat and

:12:42. > :12:46.in the end nobody could. It was left up to Kian Emadi in that

:12:47. > :12:49.third lap lead to try and bring England home. Just had a small

:12:50. > :12:55.deficit, a couple of attempts to try and bring back, unfortunately for

:12:56. > :12:59.him he did not have the legs. It was New Zealand who powered their way

:13:00. > :13:03.around these three laps. What can you say? When you get beaten by a

:13:04. > :13:10.squad like this, reigning world champions, yet again beating the

:13:11. > :13:14.Commonwealth record, you have to come up with an awful lot to have an

:13:15. > :13:15.answer for that and unfortunately the England squad were not quite up

:13:16. > :13:20.to it. It was a very, very close race after

:13:21. > :13:27.the first lap, then New Zealand has just started to pull away, and, it

:13:28. > :13:38.was they who claimed the gold, 43.181, a new Commonwealth record,

:13:39. > :13:40.43.706 for England. Gold four New Zealand, silver for

:13:41. > :13:48.England and the bronze claimed by Australia.

:13:49. > :13:52.STUDIO: The world champions take the medal and that was the result we

:13:53. > :13:56.expected, wasn't it? It was, but to be fair England were

:13:57. > :13:59.right in it. Philip had a fantastic first lap,

:14:00. > :14:03.around four hundredths of a second down. Then Webster came through the

:14:04. > :14:09.second lap. Jason does not seem to be quite at his best committee lost

:14:10. > :14:13.a couple of tenths and the momentum was lost, and Kian Emadi did the

:14:14. > :14:17.best he could. Still a great ride, 43.170. That is a fraction of a

:14:18. > :14:22.second quicker than the Aussies went.

:14:23. > :14:26.You wonder, Sarah, whether the British riders are turning a bit of

:14:27. > :14:28.a corner after four World Championships and no medals. Perhaps

:14:29. > :14:32.people watching at home were surprised because going back to the

:14:33. > :14:38.Olympics it was gold medals all the way for Britain, wasn't it? We will

:14:39. > :14:44.talk about that in a second but I think we have the New Zealand team

:14:45. > :14:46.now. The English team, sorry, they are with Jill.

:14:47. > :14:50.Well, Jason, a Commonwealth silver medal. I know you would prefer to be

:14:51. > :14:53.on the top step but given qualifying this morning in the individual

:14:54. > :15:01.sprint, that felt like a team with something to prove today.

:15:02. > :15:06.Yes, it did. Well, just to get a ride out, yeah. Not shown ourselves

:15:07. > :15:11.very well recently, it was a massive step today to get to the final.

:15:12. > :15:15.Looking back at this morning and that individual sprint qualifying,

:15:16. > :15:21.what does that say about your form having put down that marker today?

:15:22. > :15:25.I think so, the 200 is one event, obviously, but as we proved on the

:15:26. > :15:31.black line in the team sprint, were up there with the best of them.

:15:32. > :15:35.Although not great this morning, me particularly, feeling a bit better

:15:36. > :15:40.but we were all pretty average this morning. That is not the full story,

:15:41. > :15:43.you know, we are still going fairly well.

:15:44. > :15:47.It was a big step to get into that, everyone was predicting it would be

:15:48. > :15:52.an Australia- New Zealand final, but two great starts from you today.

:15:53. > :16:00.Yes, I am happy with my starts are really happy with that.

:16:01. > :16:03.Yes. I think you lost your train of thought, we will not get a chance to

:16:04. > :16:10.speak to Kian Emadi, you are being taken for your medal ceremony.

:16:11. > :16:14.There is, Philip was a little bit lost for words there! Yes, they were

:16:15. > :16:18.struggling to breathe. He obviously put a lot of effort

:16:19. > :16:21.into that last lap. I think they are pleased to be on the body and to

:16:22. > :16:26.beat Australia, I think everyone would be expecting a Kiwi -Aussie

:16:27. > :16:32.final, so they did very well today. Jill asked Jason and he agreed, this

:16:33. > :16:36.idea of them turning a corner, and it has been for the British men's

:16:37. > :16:40.track team that has been so dominant, then you retired and left

:16:41. > :16:43.a little bit of a void, and they have kind of lost their way little

:16:44. > :16:46.bit. They have in terms of results but

:16:47. > :16:50.that does not always tell you the bigger picture.

:16:51. > :16:53.That sounds like a politician! Well, the fractions are so small,

:16:54. > :16:59.little things can make a fortune go on your side or against you.

:17:00. > :17:03.Confidence, more men these things, and this could be the start of more

:17:04. > :17:05.confidence for the guys, getting belief back again and little

:17:06. > :17:09.fractions, little things that can weigh against you or afford you can

:17:10. > :17:15.dictate whether you get a medal or not.

:17:16. > :17:18.That confidence, it is a nod thing to say, because you would think you

:17:19. > :17:22.would come from the Olympic Games full of confidence, yet it has not

:17:23. > :17:24.quite been like that. Every personality from the games has

:17:25. > :17:29.a different schedule for a year, maybe, ie around half, depending,

:17:30. > :17:33.some riders retire and some others go and do other things.

:17:34. > :17:38.When you come back together it is finding out what have left from that

:17:39. > :17:41.amazing success and rebuilding it. We've talked about rebuilding a lot

:17:42. > :17:44.in the past two years respecting the track team, and hopefully those

:17:45. > :17:49.jigsaw puzzles are coming together. Fortune come -- as Chris says, it

:17:50. > :17:55.starts to come your way. The men's team pursuit as the return

:17:56. > :18:00.of Sir Bradley Wiggins. He will hope to get a gold medal to complete his

:18:01. > :18:09.set. He has another silver one. Now over to the medal ceremony.

:18:10. > :18:16.COMMENTATOR: In the end it was a final which went to form. New

:18:17. > :18:20.Zealand with a stunning raid in the race for bronze, catching Canada

:18:21. > :18:25.halfway through the race to bring it to a conclusion. Shane Archbold,

:18:26. > :18:32.Pieter Bulling, Dylan Kennett and Marc Ryan. Always there or

:18:33. > :18:35.thereabouts in the team pursuit, bronze-medallists in the World

:18:36. > :18:41.Championships earlier this year and it is the same colour here in

:18:42. > :18:48.Glasgow. Just under 14 seconds the advantage going into that ride for

:18:49. > :18:52.bronze. After early expected conclusion, just about making it to

:18:53. > :19:01.half distance before the New Zealanders overtook the Canadian

:19:02. > :19:15.quartet. Slightly different story in the ride off for gold and silver.

:19:16. > :19:22.Still cannot quite get onto the top step of the podium in the team

:19:23. > :19:24.pursuit. It has been bronze and silver in the last three

:19:25. > :19:34.Commonwealth Games now for New Zealand. Silver for England, our

:19:35. > :19:39.fourth silver of his career for Bradley Wiggins. Third time in the

:19:40. > :19:49.team pursuit, the other coming in the individual pursuit in

:19:50. > :19:54.Manchester. Steven Burke, part of the Olympic team pursuit winning

:19:55. > :19:59.team of 2-mac years ago, Andy Tennant the former world champion in

:20:00. > :20:05.this event as well, and Ed Clancy, a two-time and current Olympic

:20:06. > :20:08.champion who like Sir Bradley Wiggins is still to win a gold medal

:20:09. > :20:14.from the Commonwealth Games to complete the set. Not a lot missing

:20:15. > :20:27.from either of the metal cabinets, but gold in the Commonwealth is. --

:20:28. > :20:34.medal cabinets. I would offer to lender then mine, but they should

:20:35. > :20:42.earn it by right. Now we will move on to the winners. As England take

:20:43. > :20:45.the applause of the crowd. We are looking at a world-class World

:20:46. > :20:51.Championship winning quartet who are now the Commonwealth champions as

:20:52. > :20:56.well. Blisteringly fast, world-class, worthy winners. Jack

:20:57. > :21:01.Bobridge back into the team, the road rider, who won this event and

:21:02. > :21:13.the individual pursuit in Delhi 4-mac years ago. And with him Luke

:21:14. > :21:18.Davison, Alex Edmondson, third from the left, just 20 years old. World

:21:19. > :21:24.champion in the individual pursuit as well. And Glenn O'Shea. And you

:21:25. > :21:30.Commonwealth Games record-tying, 354 point 851 seconds.

:21:31. > :21:35.A fleeting moment during the final when Australia went down to three

:21:36. > :21:42.and you just wondered if they were going to come under pressure but it

:21:43. > :21:46.was not the case at all. It was a half distance, they went down to

:21:47. > :21:49.three and the third rider started to lose the wheel, they were down to

:21:50. > :21:58.two and a half men but they pulled it back and that is the sign of a

:21:59. > :22:39.true champion ride. AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS.

:22:40. > :23:04.STUDIO: The Australian team pursuit team retain the Commonwealth title.

:23:05. > :23:08.The battle lines very much drawn for Brazil? Yes, you can see the

:23:09. > :23:12.disappointment on the faces they are in contrast to the men's team

:23:13. > :23:18.sprint, these guys were really hoping they could still a march over

:23:19. > :23:21.the Aussies. This ongoing rivalry is fantastic as a spectator, now I am

:23:22. > :23:29.out of it I can enjoy it, but when you are in it it is a tough

:23:30. > :23:33.challenge. Looking at the disappointment, do you think there

:23:34. > :23:37.was a slight element of an realism that Bradley Wiggins would drag them

:23:38. > :23:43.to a gold medal and pummelled the Australians into the ground? I think

:23:44. > :23:47.they were gaining confidence from having Bradley around. They did not

:23:48. > :23:51.necessarily know the former Australia would have. They will go

:23:52. > :23:55.away and be disappointed but there are positives they can take away

:23:56. > :24:03.from this. This is the start of the final countdown now towards Brazil.

:24:04. > :24:08.In terms of the leadership that Sir Bradley will bring, on the men's

:24:09. > :24:12.side you think perhaps the retirement of Chris, may have lacked

:24:13. > :24:17.leadership and maybe they will bring that? He is an inspiration when he

:24:18. > :24:20.walks into the room, winning the Tour de France, doing incredible

:24:21. > :24:23.things on the road and such a hastily with the track, so it goes

:24:24. > :24:35.without saying that when he walks into the velodrome it left everyone

:24:36. > :24:43.-- such a history. Should we call it a reverence on the podium, what have

:24:44. > :24:47.they given me? When he is on form, in terms of his mood he is one of

:24:48. > :24:53.the best guys to have in the team, he cracks jokes, he raises morale. I

:24:54. > :24:59.think if he can bring something back into the team aside from his iconic

:25:00. > :25:05.status it is his personality, this could be a really important thing

:25:06. > :25:14.for the team to have him back. We will head back to gel who has got

:25:15. > :25:19.the team pursuit team. I have, I know you like to be on the top step,

:25:20. > :25:25.but that was a very good Australian side, they went out very hard? Yes,

:25:26. > :25:30.it is easy to see this as a failure, of course we want to win,

:25:31. > :25:34.Commonwealth Games and all that and being Olympic champions. But

:25:35. > :25:39.compared to where we were in Colombia, the World Championships at

:25:40. > :25:43.the start of the year, it is a giant leap forward. It is not a black and

:25:44. > :25:48.white world, there are shades of grey. We can look at this as partial

:25:49. > :25:53.success. It is great having Brad back in the team and he has been a

:25:54. > :25:56.part of this, it is not just his horsepower but we are excited to

:25:57. > :26:05.have him back. Looking forward to the journey to Rio now. How have you

:26:06. > :26:10.enjoyed the experience? I have said this is like being on holiday, I

:26:11. > :26:14.have to go back to work on Monday morning. It has been a nice break

:26:15. > :26:20.from everything, from the road. It is a good starting point for us, for

:26:21. > :26:26.the next two years, you cannot win all the time, I think four weeks ago

:26:27. > :26:30.we sat in a room for the first time and we all said what do you think,

:26:31. > :26:37.we do you think we are at and what can we do in Glasgow? We all said

:26:38. > :26:43.about 57 if we trained hard, that is the reality, limited preparation. We

:26:44. > :26:46.will look back on this in two years hopefully with gold medals around

:26:47. > :26:50.are neck and see this was the starting point. There is that

:26:51. > :26:55.element of disappointment that you were unable to get the gold here,

:26:56. > :27:02.that drives you on, you personally are you committed towards Rio? Yes,

:27:03. > :27:10.I said all on the track is what I was going to go back to. The event

:27:11. > :27:14.has moved on so much. When I left the squad about six years ago this

:27:15. > :27:20.sort of times we were producing today, you would have won gold with

:27:21. > :27:25.those, apart from the Olympics. I think it is a starting point, I am

:27:26. > :27:29.not going to underestimate the event, it will take a lot and I need

:27:30. > :27:35.to put on muscle and get stronger so I can still do two and a half lap

:27:36. > :27:42.turns. It will be two years of graft now, it is so difficult to the road,

:27:43. > :27:47.I cannot underestimate how much work it will take. Congratulations.

:27:48. > :27:51.Stephen, back in the team, you left it all out on the track, giving

:27:52. > :27:57.qualifying this morning there did not seem to be a lot left to

:27:58. > :27:59.deliver? Yes, that is true, and it is an improvement on the World

:28:00. > :28:06.Championships saw things are on the up but we have got a lot of work to

:28:07. > :28:13.do and we know that for sure. I am confident we can improve and set the

:28:14. > :28:18.record straight in two years time. Tough transitions on this track as

:28:19. > :28:22.we saw in the World Cup, but a safe couple of rides and progress being

:28:23. > :28:26.made? Yes, I can only reiterate what they have been saying, start of the

:28:27. > :28:34.journey and I did not crash so that was nice for my self exclusion Mark

:28:35. > :28:42.disappointed not to get gold, the estuary is where a fantastic team,

:28:43. > :28:56.-- VS trillions were a fantastic team. -- the Australians where our

:28:57. > :29:04.fantastic team. Thank you. STUDIO: Bradley called it like being on

:29:05. > :29:08.holiday! He has said that before, because he is not training for seven

:29:09. > :29:16.hours a day he feels like he is not doing anything, but for the rest of

:29:17. > :29:21.us mere mortals it is still work. I am pleased to see the guys a bit

:29:22. > :29:25.more up than I expected. This is clearly a step forward from Colombia

:29:26. > :29:29.and the World Championships. They are realistic about how much work it

:29:30. > :29:35.will take and will not underestimate the challenge but it is a good

:29:36. > :29:38.start. Thank you for now, Bradley Wiggins has another Silver

:29:39. > :29:48.Commonwealth medal, and Scotland has its first with Hayley McGlynn.

:29:49. > :29:53.STUDIO: I am joined by Steve Cram, we have had an extraordinary sponsor

:29:54. > :29:57.from all of you today, thank you for your suggestions for the word of the

:29:58. > :30:01.day. We will shear one or two with you, the first suggestion is from

:30:02. > :30:14.Charles who points to the big yellow ball in the sky and suggests a word

:30:15. > :30:36.which means it is not raining. That is what we had at Strathclyde Park

:30:37. > :30:38.today for the triathlon. Also described as Taps Aff weather. That

:30:39. > :30:42.is when men take all their clothes off.

:30:43. > :30:44.The Geordies are not far off. You have all those told me it is always

:30:45. > :30:48.like this. Because of these temperatures Ross

:30:49. > :30:58.McGeachie Donald suggests at the very difficult conditions at

:30:59. > :31:02.Strathclyde Park, wabbit, meaning tired and a little wobbly. Alistair

:31:03. > :31:09.Brownlee and his brother, Jonny Brownlee, will be feeling wabbit

:31:10. > :31:19.after that race today. Keep them coming, and it is at Weegie word to

:31:20. > :31:22.send in more. Mo Farah has had to pull out because

:31:23. > :31:26.he has been suffering from an illness in the last few weeks. What

:31:27. > :31:32.is your reaction, first of all, to that news.

:31:33. > :31:37.To be fair, I was surprised this morning, years over the illness, per

:31:38. > :31:40.se, but it is obviously a race against time to get himself as fit

:31:41. > :31:47.as he would like to be. Unusually this time round, in 2012, normally

:31:48. > :31:52.the 10,000 is first, the 5000 can be a bonus. Here, the 5000 is on

:31:53. > :31:57.Sunday. Last weekend the noise is where he would not be here for the

:31:58. > :32:00.5000, not quite ready, but we were hoping and expecting he would be

:32:01. > :32:06.here for the 10,000 at the end of the week. That is a bit of a

:32:07. > :32:10.surprise. He has obviously made that decision based on him being Mo

:32:11. > :32:14.Farah, he wants to win. The Commonwealth Games on the track is

:32:15. > :32:18.tough, particularly in the distance events. The Kenyans are very strong

:32:19. > :32:23.in particular and he knew that if he was a little bit of then, you know,

:32:24. > :32:27.he does not want to come here and get beat, obviously. It is a

:32:28. > :32:30.disappointment for the games, for all the people that have wanted to

:32:31. > :32:36.come and see him and all the other big names, as well. I hope it is a

:32:37. > :32:39.disappointment for him, as well. The Commonwealth Games is an important

:32:40. > :32:42.event. I know he said he was training for the Europeans, but

:32:43. > :32:47.there are not many British athletes who have won Olympic, world,

:32:48. > :32:51.European and Commonwealth titles. He would have joined a very select club

:32:52. > :32:54.and I do not think that chance will come again.

:32:55. > :32:58.It would be triple, double, in effect.

:32:59. > :33:06.Absolutely. I know sometimes people say it is a real world-class event.

:33:07. > :33:12.It is. In track and field, it is. It has great history. Lots of our top

:33:13. > :33:15.distance theory from -- heroes from history have done it. I hope he is

:33:16. > :33:20.disappointed. From a UK Athletics standpoint is it

:33:21. > :33:28.more important to them that he competes at the Europeans in Z?rich

:33:29. > :33:35.pressure Mark that is a good question.

:33:36. > :33:38.-- insulated? -- in this unit? Winning championships is what the

:33:39. > :33:45.funding programmes are about and obviously there is an emphasis on

:33:46. > :33:47.getting athletes prepared for the championships and the European

:33:48. > :33:50.Championships slots into that, as well. It is always difficult when we

:33:51. > :33:56.have the Commonwealth Games in the UK. We had it in 1986, then we had

:33:57. > :34:00.to go to Stuttgart ten days later for the European Championships.

:34:01. > :34:04.Everyone had the same in Manchester, straight to Munich straight after.

:34:05. > :34:08.It is difficult to get the balance right, but plenty have done it,

:34:09. > :34:12.Paula Radcliffe did that in 2002. Then we come back to Mo Farah's

:34:13. > :34:20.scenario, combine that with the move up to the marathon at the same time.

:34:21. > :34:24.More as had his problems. -- he has had his problems. It is a decision

:34:25. > :34:28.he has taken, they have left it as late as they could and I am pretty

:34:29. > :34:32.sure we will see him hopefully racing well in Z?rich. Obviously the

:34:33. > :34:36.Commonwealth Games organisers are disappointed but there are some

:34:37. > :34:39.wonderful stars remaining. Katarina Johnson-Thompson has had to

:34:40. > :34:44.pull out because of injury, as well, but intent of the star names left

:34:45. > :34:49.who are you most looking forward to seeing? -- in terms.

:34:50. > :34:53.There are some genuine, really top-class world stars here, probably

:34:54. > :34:58.the men's 800 metres is the big one for me. In 2012, David Rudisha at

:34:59. > :35:02.the height of his career and I don't know if everyone saw that wonderful

:35:03. > :35:08.documentary on BBC Four the other night, he comes here having had a

:35:09. > :35:13.year out, he has in getting better incremental way, he is not the 2012

:35:14. > :35:19.David Rudisha and the young man who finished second to him in 2012, all

:35:20. > :35:25.of those national records where -- were beaten. The almost beat him

:35:26. > :35:31.last weekend. He did carry the flag last night,

:35:32. > :35:36.and he is a massive talent. I think the two of them for the next two or

:35:37. > :35:40.three years can dominate that event. These are the two best in the world

:35:41. > :35:46.at the moment. In the 400 metres, as well.

:35:47. > :35:51.There is lots to look forward to come it all starts on Sunday.

:35:52. > :35:56.We are going to head right across to the SECC, because it is time for the

:35:57. > :35:59.Jude Law now. We have five finals and we have home nations

:36:00. > :36:04.representation in everyone of them. Timber Lee Rennick 's Scotland is

:36:05. > :36:08.younger of two sisters. Her older sister, Louise come is also thanking

:36:09. > :36:14.tonight. Camberley is in the 48 kilograms, the light of the

:36:15. > :36:16.weights, she is up against an Indian born it and trying to win

:36:17. > :36:30.Scotland's first gold of these games.

:36:31. > :36:42.Aside this place is going to erupt. Look at that face! She is there a!

:36:43. > :36:47.She is in it to win it. Not taking the pressure of her home crowd,

:36:48. > :36:52.using that energy around the stadium. It is absolutely spiralling

:36:53. > :36:57.right over her head. Well, Kimberley Renicks, I think, it is safe to say,

:36:58. > :37:01.has really got her work cut out there. Her opponent has been an

:37:02. > :37:13.absolutely unbelievable form all day. Every scar she has done has

:37:14. > :37:20.been ippon. Kimberley Renicks really has to play the tactics here.

:37:21. > :37:28.Kimberley Renicks is representing Scotland in blue, or opponent is

:37:29. > :37:35.invite. You can just see blue and white flags everywhere. Lots of

:37:36. > :37:45.Scottish finalists in this tournament this evening in this

:37:46. > :37:55.stadium. My goodness me, we can hardly see you -- hardly hear

:37:56. > :38:01.ourselves commented. I have heard from various sources that Likmabam

:38:02. > :38:03.is absolutely a firestarter. She will be looking for the big

:38:04. > :38:09.technique. There it is! She is trying to back

:38:10. > :38:12.her up. She has to be careful of that because she will disappear

:38:13. > :38:25.underneath her if she is not careful. That is what she wants, you

:38:26. > :38:29.can see it setting up every time. Renicks is a fighter!

:38:30. > :38:35.Welcome action, reaction, she will get a penalty straight off the bat,

:38:36. > :38:40.Likmabam. Likmabam gets the penalty, but Renicks, if that is a, has just

:38:41. > :38:59.got to be a little bit careful. Likmabam, second penalty coming.

:39:00. > :39:02.That is the tactic then. That is not the way she wants to

:39:03. > :39:13.win, she wants to be a crowd pleaser, she wants the big boom.

:39:14. > :39:23.Well, she once the ippon. -- she doesn't want the ippon.

:39:24. > :39:30.The crowd are absolutely on top of this match, what an atmosphere. You

:39:31. > :39:34.could cut it with a knife. Likmabam has to change her tactics.

:39:35. > :39:38.I think one of the problems is she has probably had it a little too

:39:39. > :39:41.easy through the day. It is not going as planned.

:39:42. > :39:52.She has done it! Renicks does it. Renicks on the edge

:39:53. > :39:56.and ippon goes over. Standing ovation from the crowd,

:39:57. > :40:05.they have their first gold medal in Scotland. She took her apart piece

:40:06. > :40:09.by piece, fantastic. Her tactics there were absolutely

:40:10. > :40:14.superb, because that was the way to do it. She closed her down, never

:40:15. > :40:18.gave her a target, and she just put her under pressure. Likmabam will

:40:19. > :40:21.feel more butter. I am almost sure of it, because really her tactics

:40:22. > :40:25.were very poor coming into that match. Technically probably better,

:40:26. > :40:33.but tactically absolutely miles away. Kimberley Renicks was superb.

:40:34. > :40:37.She did everything right and that is the first gold medal. Like you said,

:40:38. > :40:48.standing ovation for Renicks. Here it is on the H, look at that,

:40:49. > :40:52.drivers are backwards. That Sir cleanly onto the back. Beautiful

:40:53. > :40:58.ippon there. Kimberley Renicks... Well, can they do the double? Her

:40:59. > :41:03.and her sister? That is the double. Kimberley Renicks wins the gold

:41:04. > :41:12.medal for Scotland. She is the under 48 kilos Commonwealth Games gold

:41:13. > :41:15.medallist. Kimberley Renicks, Commonwealth

:41:16. > :41:20.champion, how does that sound? It is absolutely great, I am so happy.

:41:21. > :41:24.I was the first one to go out there and I wanted to get the team off to

:41:25. > :41:28.a great start. Not only a first on the mat here, but also Scotland's

:41:29. > :41:32.first gold medal. It is a great achievement to get

:41:33. > :41:36.that first gold, unbelievable. Of course you have to go and cheered

:41:37. > :41:39.on your sister. Yes, hopefully she can do the same and we can make it a

:41:40. > :41:42.sister double. How did it feel to be on the mat in

:41:43. > :41:46.front of such a great crowd supporting you?

:41:47. > :41:49.The crowds are phenomenal, they are so good. The minute they cheer you

:41:50. > :41:55.on it gives you that list, you want to do it better for them.

:41:56. > :41:58.Did nerves come into play pressure might my stomach has been sick all

:41:59. > :42:03.day, but when the crowd cheers you it makes you go, I can do this.

:42:04. > :42:05.What does it mean to you to be standing at the top of the potty

:42:06. > :42:08.with the Scottish flag? It will be great, it will be

:42:09. > :42:13.wonderful. Many congratulations, done.

:42:14. > :42:17.Yes, 26-year-old Kimberley Renicks gets the host nation off and running

:42:18. > :42:21.with first gold medal the game. She is from the Coatbridge area and is

:42:22. > :42:25.coached by her dad Thomas and her older sister will be going for gold,

:42:26. > :42:30.as welcome in a short. We will keep you up-to-date with what is going on

:42:31. > :42:35.in the ECC -- SECC. Timber lead's compatriot, John

:42:36. > :42:39.Buchanan come is going for bronze here.

:42:40. > :42:42.John Buchanan, halfway through the contest, still in there, still

:42:43. > :43:15.looking fresh. Needs to move it. That was very close. John Buchanan

:43:16. > :43:18.this time on the edge. They are both looking for the Yoko

:43:19. > :43:20.Sutemi Waza, I would like to see them with a little bit more moment.

:43:21. > :43:27.A little bit more positive... There it is!

:43:28. > :43:30.He has got the ippon. I don't think that was ippon. I am going to make a

:43:31. > :43:38.call, I think them video referee may overrule that. I think it was!

:43:39. > :43:46.It would be a very brave decision. It is continuing!

:43:47. > :43:57.The referee again called the flight, did not call the landing. John

:43:58. > :44:01.Buchanan has been given Waza Ari for sure on that.

:44:02. > :44:07.That is the problem, it looks dynamic flying through the air, but

:44:08. > :44:12.you how to score the landing. We are back! Everyone is back up standing.

:44:13. > :44:22.John Buchanan! 38 years old.

:44:23. > :44:30.38 years old, John Buchanan. Not only is he a star, but he is a

:44:31. > :44:38.38-year-old star. Fantastic stuff. Careful!

:44:39. > :44:42.There it is! And backward somersault before his barrel of. Your class.

:44:43. > :44:50.That probably should have happened after the barrel, but never mind. --

:44:51. > :45:02.after the bow. Let's have a look, John Buchanan.

:45:03. > :45:07.You have to land with both points of the shoulder on the deck. It does

:45:08. > :45:10.not matter, John Buchanan has been given ippon. He is the bronze

:45:11. > :45:16.medallist here at the Commonwealth Games in under 60 kilograms, and of

:45:17. > :45:20.the crowd absolutely love it. They love our hero, John Buchanan is a

:45:21. > :45:24.hero. He did not want to go home

:45:25. > :45:27.empty-handed. He certainly did not.

:45:28. > :45:31.What a profitable half-hour for Scotland. In the SECC in the

:45:32. > :45:35.medals, they keep coming. Many will hope that will continue to be the

:45:36. > :45:39.case this evening when we go to Tollcross for the swimming. We have

:45:40. > :45:43.five finals there this evening and they will start just after 7pm. In

:45:44. > :45:47.the first of those finals will be Scotland's Hannah Miley, the

:45:48. > :45:51.defending 400 metres individual medley champion. She broke her own

:45:52. > :45:52.Commonwealth record this morning and looks very good indeed.

:45:53. > :46:07.Will she be smiley Hannah Miley? I have got to remind myself that it

:46:08. > :46:11.is just another swimming competition, I am there to enjoy it,

:46:12. > :46:14.I have done all the hard work and training I just have to go in and

:46:15. > :46:18.race the race that I have done hundreds of thousands of times

:46:19. > :46:26.before, it just is that there will be a few more people watching!

:46:27. > :46:29.Having more than just more than one swimmer on day one who has medal

:46:30. > :46:33.potential is quite nice, pressure will only get to you if you let it,

:46:34. > :46:41.so we have to make sure we stay strong and are not affected by it.

:46:42. > :46:47.Hannah Miley coming through now. Up to about fourth position. The lead

:46:48. > :46:55.is quite clear. Experiencing London set me up quite well because that

:46:56. > :46:58.was a huge amount of pressure, Mark Cavendish does not get the gold

:46:59. > :47:07.medal so we are all looking at you. It was very strange. Hannah Miley

:47:08. > :47:10.finishes in fifth position. As disappointing as it was I think it

:47:11. > :47:19.was a positive thing for me because it allowed me to sit back and

:47:20. > :47:29.reflect, getting into the final, one of the hardest events to make the

:47:30. > :47:34.final four. My dad 's passion and love for swimming goes way back

:47:35. > :47:38.before I was born. His passion is what has driven myself and my

:47:39. > :47:42.younger brothers to be part of the sport and taken it to where it is. I

:47:43. > :47:47.don't think he ever expected us to get to the level that we are at. He

:47:48. > :47:52.has always coached me and for me I have a huge amount of respect for

:47:53. > :47:56.him. He just has such a huge passion for it, you cannot help but feel

:47:57. > :48:02.drawn to it just because of the vast knowledge that he has. It is a

:48:03. > :48:05.strange environment, a lot of people probably don't understand it but for

:48:06. > :48:11.us it is how we work and how we run and I would not have it any other

:48:12. > :48:18.way. I have made a lot of changes to both my diet and my regime.

:48:19. > :48:23.Physically I do feel a lot better. It is kind of all starting to fall

:48:24. > :48:27.into place. It is just a matter of maintaining it, keeping up the

:48:28. > :48:32.training and hard work. It will be a good race. I know my competitors are

:48:33. > :48:36.very strong at the moment. They have put in a lot of hard work as well,

:48:37. > :48:40.but I know that the hard work I have put in has just been as tough and

:48:41. > :48:44.consistent and solid so it is a matter of making sure I produce the

:48:45. > :48:50.result I know that I can do on the day. Hopefully the guys will get

:48:51. > :48:54.excited, get behind the Scottish swimmers and support them. Good luck

:48:55. > :49:03.to Hannah Miley, she is off at seven minutes past seven this evening.

:49:04. > :49:09.There is great news again from the SEC see because there is news of a

:49:10. > :49:19.fourth gold medal for England, Ashley McKenzie in the 60 kilograms

:49:20. > :49:26.category in the judo. If you would like to see the remaining judo

:49:27. > :49:29.finals they are live on BBC Three. Wonderful news for him and England,

:49:30. > :49:36.a fourth gold medal for England today. We are going to Tollcross

:49:37. > :49:44.Park, it is about a mile and a half from here, Clare Balding is there

:49:45. > :49:52.width Becky Adlington and Mark Foster. It is hot everywhere and I

:49:53. > :49:58.guess it is extra hot inside the? It is quite warm, I cannot lie. The

:49:59. > :50:04.noise will be incredible, it is a very low roof which condenses the

:50:05. > :50:09.sound and builds it up. Huge chances for Scotland tonight, alongside me

:50:10. > :50:14.are double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington and the wonderful Mark

:50:15. > :50:17.Foster, unfortunately we did not consult before we dressed so

:50:18. > :50:27.consequently we look a little similar. How big danger is Aimee

:50:28. > :50:32.Willmott to Hannah Miley? I think she is definitely a danger, I think

:50:33. > :50:37.she might get the goal tonight. She is so in control. And she has got

:50:38. > :50:43.the extra gear, she can turn it up a speed which Hannah does not quite

:50:44. > :50:47.have the same level to turn on and off, but I think it will definitely

:50:48. > :50:53.be then head to head. They have both got different strengths. Hannah is a

:50:54. > :51:01.bit weak on the butterfly winners Aimee Willmott is very strong. She

:51:02. > :51:07.will start strong and it is about if Hannah Miley can hang with her and

:51:08. > :51:11.come back? We have watched Hannah in the breaststroke and she seems to

:51:12. > :51:15.come towards the end but I think Aimee Willmott has just as strong a

:51:16. > :51:18.breaststroke so I think it will be down to the wire, but I think Aimee

:51:19. > :51:24.Willmott is on the up at the moment. Hannah is consistent, she

:51:25. > :51:27.will perform, but it is whether she has got enough tonight and I think

:51:28. > :51:34.Aimee Willmott is still improving and will edge it. Do you think the

:51:35. > :51:38.Scottish swimmers, this is the thing they have been training for, this is

:51:39. > :51:46.what they are keyed up for, this is the main event in their heads, ever?

:51:47. > :51:50.Yes, this is the major meat. Yes they have Europeans after it but

:51:51. > :51:55.this is what they have been focusing on this year, especially for the

:51:56. > :51:59.Scottish guys, it means so much, you can hear the noise already. That

:52:00. > :52:08.will push them on the last 25 metres. What is your feeling about

:52:09. > :52:12.Michael Jamieson, he is the poster boy for the Scottish team and he

:52:13. > :52:16.says he has lived for this pressure? He does have the pressure and I

:52:17. > :52:24.don't think what has anything to lose, after this morning Ross is in

:52:25. > :52:30.the spotlight, it is one thing being in the spotlight. If Michael

:52:31. > :52:38.Jamieson is on form Murdoch knows he has got a tough race on his hand.

:52:39. > :52:43.Michael Jamieson did not need to react to it, but I thought he would

:52:44. > :52:47.have shown more this morning. Michael looked to come up very quick

:52:48. > :52:54.from his stroke. I know nothing, but tell me what to think. You are

:52:55. > :53:01.correct, the first 50 metres Michael looked like he was trying too hard.

:53:02. > :53:08.Normally he looks at ease. The first race you have to blow away the

:53:09. > :53:14.cobwebs. This giddy thing is that when Sharron Davies interviewed Ross

:53:15. > :53:19.afterwards Ross said it was a comfortable heat and that was the

:53:20. > :53:26.scary moment for me, what more does Ross have to give tonight? The

:53:27. > :53:32.interesting thing will be, Ross will go back to the Olympic Village, did

:53:33. > :53:40.he sleep and relax? Commonwealth Village. Commonwealth Village. But

:53:41. > :53:48.he has never been in that position before. That will be interesting,

:53:49. > :53:52.did he relax, was he nervous this afternoon? I don't know him that

:53:53. > :53:59.well but it has a lot to play this evening. What do they do, would you

:54:00. > :54:07.sleep between the sheets and the finals? Every single athlete is

:54:08. > :54:11.different. They have to go and do the drugs tests, it seems like quite

:54:12. > :54:15.a long process, but hopefully they have managed to get back, it is

:54:16. > :54:24.about refuelling, making sure you are eating enough, that you have got

:54:25. > :54:28.everything that you need. I always tell every athlete to have a really

:54:29. > :54:39.good docs set of DVDs because you need to switch off and relax. It is

:54:40. > :54:51.about what is good for you. I never used to sleep but other guys always

:54:52. > :54:55.did. I did one session a day. What did we learn about the swimming pool

:54:56. > :55:02.this morning? I know it sounds odd to say this, is it fast? I

:55:03. > :55:06.definitely thought that it was. Especially for the women's 400-metre

:55:07. > :55:13.medley this morning there were only two Mac heats, there were a number

:55:14. > :55:21.of Commonwealth Games records gone, quite a number of personal bests.

:55:22. > :55:30.Five second drops, three seconds drops all over the place from people

:55:31. > :55:38.'s personal best times. They know the pool now, they feel at ease at

:55:39. > :55:43.it. We have got a hugely exciting evening of swimming coming up, gold

:55:44. > :55:48.medals to be awarded, it gets underway just after seven o'clock,

:55:49. > :55:52.Hannah Miley will be in the pool up against Aimee Willmott for the

:55:53. > :55:59.400-metre individual medley. STUDIO: Thank you, before we go because we

:56:00. > :56:08.are approaching 7pm we will remind you of the chief headlines. It is

:56:09. > :56:14.Kimberley Renicks who has won Scotland's first gold-medal of the

:56:15. > :56:20.games after victory in the under 48 kilograms judo finals. The first

:56:21. > :56:24.gold of Glasgow 's games went to England in the women's triathlon,

:56:25. > :56:29.victory for Jodie Stimpson and a hard-fought bronze for team-mate

:56:30. > :56:33.Vicky Holland. Alistair Brownlee has added the Commonwealth title to his

:56:34. > :56:39.Olympic crown in the men's triathlon, with his younger brother

:56:40. > :56:44.Johnny taking silver. Sir Bradley Wiggins missed out on his first

:56:45. > :56:49.Commonwealth gold medal as England came second in the team final

:56:50. > :56:55.pursuit with Australia taking the honours in that one. Our fourth

:56:56. > :56:59.silver medal of but he says that is a start for him because he is going

:57:00. > :57:07.to go for real on the track in a couple of years time. Four goals for

:57:08. > :57:17.England, one for Scotland so far, -- golds. This son is smiling on as

:57:18. > :57:22.here as we look across the River Clyde. The big question tonight,

:57:23. > :57:27.we'll Michael Jamieson, Scotland's golden boy, deliver in the pool?

:57:28. > :57:34.Join Gary and Clare Balding and the rest of the team very shortly. For

:57:35. > :57:39.now, goodbye. Glasgow, this city is my hometown and this is our home

:57:40. > :57:45.games. To compete here will be the realisation of a lifelong goal. I

:57:46. > :57:51.was a child who was cleared of water yet here in Glasgow I decided I

:57:52. > :57:55.wanted to become an Olympian. -- was scared of water. But it is about

:57:56. > :58:01.more than gold, it is about striving for your absolute best. And here it

:58:02. > :58:04.home that is what I will do.
