:00:43. > :00:48.Hello, welcome back to Glasgow, the eighth day of the 20th Commonwealth

:00:49. > :00:52.Games. A big night of athletics to come, but this afternoon, lots of

:00:53. > :01:05.sporting action for you. We have reached the last 16 of the

:01:06. > :01:11.women's singles, Sarah Walker is up against her opponent from Jersey.

:01:12. > :01:17.The tasty matchups continue in the women's doubles squash, England

:01:18. > :01:22.against Australia. And, the men's time trial is up and

:01:23. > :01:28.running, will it be a happy ending for David Millar in the men's time

:01:29. > :01:36.trial? Lots of great coverage for you right

:01:37. > :01:39.now over on BBC Three. If you want diving from Edinburgh, that is the

:01:40. > :01:48.place to go. Tonia Couch in action. On the red button, women's doubles

:01:49. > :01:57.squash. And, the best of the action from that later on this programme.

:01:58. > :02:02.The Hydro is the place for world-class gymnastics this

:02:03. > :02:08.afternoon. A big night of track and field. Follow all of the action on

:02:09. > :02:10.the website. Use the brilliant BBC Sport app to follow the action and

:02:11. > :02:16.the latest results. First, it is the badminton. It is

:02:17. > :02:22.getting very exciting in the women's singles.

:02:23. > :02:27.The Emirates Arena, including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, opened in

:02:28. > :02:31.2012, providing a dramatic setting for the badminton during the

:02:32. > :02:37.Commonwealth Games, with the athletes competing on six fantastic

:02:38. > :02:43.courts. England's national champion Sarah Walker is against Elizabeth

:02:44. > :02:49.Cann, having beaten her in straight games during the mixed team

:02:50. > :02:55.competition. They have just started, so we will go straight live to the

:02:56. > :02:56.Emirates Arena. This has the makings of a really mouthwatering clash

:02:57. > :03:11.between these two. That gave the gold medal... That is

:03:12. > :03:16.the wrong expression, but it meant Malaysian won the gold medal. It

:03:17. > :03:22.will be disappointment for her, but it is the team that loses and the

:03:23. > :03:31.team that wins. It is so true, but in that match, I think that she

:03:32. > :03:38.played really well. It was decent scoring, something like 15 and 16.

:03:39. > :03:46.16 and 17. I think she had a very good performance. I know it is very

:03:47. > :03:55.early days, but I think she is the small favourite to win this one. I

:03:56. > :03:58.am sure she is able to. Able to put what happened in the past behind her

:03:59. > :04:07.and look forward to playing these matches.

:04:08. > :04:17.A nice smash, that will help calm the nerves.

:04:18. > :04:40.That is bad luck. A good shot. It is a difficult shot from the deep

:04:41. > :04:52.backhand corner, sorry, forehand corner. A good height. It is amazing

:04:53. > :04:58.that Elizabeth Cann is competing in her fifth consecutive Commonwealth

:04:59. > :05:02.Games. She competed in the first three four Jersey, then in 2010 she

:05:03. > :05:06.represented England, but here she is, for jersey again. But five

:05:07. > :05:14.Commonwealth Games is phenomenal. It is. She is 35 now. She is keeping

:05:15. > :05:19.herself very well, in good shape, and playing some good badminton. She

:05:20. > :05:22.is not competing so much on the international circuit any more, but

:05:23. > :05:36.we can easily see she loves the game. Yes.

:05:37. > :05:45.Talking about her physicality, she is obviously a natural athlete, you

:05:46. > :05:52.can see that from just looking at her. I didn't know whether she was

:05:53. > :05:56.still doing it, but in the past, she has done her physical training under

:05:57. > :06:03.the guidance of England's former number one high jumper, Dalton

:06:04. > :06:10.Grant. A lot of work on the track and in the gym. That makes a lot of

:06:11. > :06:14.sense to me. I know it is going back some years, but when I used to play,

:06:15. > :06:21.I was a very decent high jumper. Very decent. I was competing in the

:06:22. > :06:27.First Division back home, in one match, then I got banned for being

:06:28. > :06:31.professional, so to speak, because I was professional in another sport.

:06:32. > :06:42.Can you believe that? But I was jumping close to two metres by doing

:06:43. > :06:49.no work at all. I love that, unlike the discipline. -- I like the

:06:50. > :06:52.discipline. And that training helped your badminton. The push off is so

:06:53. > :07:27.important. I like the way Walker was dictating

:07:28. > :07:38.the pace. Yes, I am sitting here with this feeling. There is the

:07:39. > :07:41.coach of Jersey. I notice a great difference today with Sarah Walker,

:07:42. > :07:47.compared to when she played the other day. I think she is very

:07:48. > :07:50.calm, and I think she has a lot of confidence that she will win this

:07:51. > :07:55.match. She is prepared to sit back a bit. She was rushing it a lot when

:07:56. > :08:00.she played the other day. Today, she is much more relaxed, waiting for

:08:01. > :08:07.the opportunities. She looks much better to me. Yes. And because of

:08:08. > :08:42.the commentator! Straightaway! I think she is trying to control her

:08:43. > :08:49.smashes a bit more, not 100% power. She plays than 70, 80%, but by doing

:08:50. > :09:01.so, she is keeping them in. Whether I am right or not, time will tell.

:09:02. > :09:27.This has been a good start to the match.

:09:28. > :09:34.That is close. That is well left by Walker. That must have been

:09:35. > :09:42.desperately close. The angle was cheating me a bit from

:09:43. > :09:58.up here. A service fault is called. The racket not pointing in a

:09:59. > :10:07.downward direction, and I concur. Completely. A good spot.

:10:08. > :10:12.She finds the line, and a 2-point advantage for the number seven seed

:10:13. > :11:04.Sarah Walker. Peter Jeffrey, the England coach,

:11:05. > :11:32.who was talking to Sarah Walker. That is nice. Did you manage to

:11:33. > :11:38.catch anything of what Peter Jeffrey said? I think they are happy with

:11:39. > :11:44.how the match is developing so far. They expect that Elizabeth Karen can

:11:45. > :11:48.follow the pace in the beginning, but they expect that Sarah Walker

:11:49. > :11:52.will be pulling away, because at the end of the day, they do not feel

:11:53. > :12:00.that Elizabeth can can keep following the pace and the physical

:12:01. > :12:13.strength. Maybe they are right. Let's wait and see. A good shot.

:12:14. > :12:22.That is something that she should do some more, try to play a bit more

:12:23. > :12:27.aggressive badminton, to try to unsettle Walker, because if she gets

:12:28. > :12:28.too confident in her shots and does not feel under pressure, it could be

:12:29. > :12:48.difficult for her to win. She wants to change the shuttlecock.

:12:49. > :12:55.You could see she landed before she tried to play that. She played

:12:56. > :13:20.beforehand with a bent arm. All contributing to making the error.

:13:21. > :13:28.That net shot is what she has to watch out for. That is where Walker

:13:29. > :13:35.is playing really well. Be careful of the backhand corner. That is good

:13:36. > :14:24.play. A good smash again. Yes. Building up

:14:25. > :14:27.the valley well. It shows a lot of confidence, because when I have seen

:14:28. > :14:34.her play before, she did not have the same patients. She has made a

:14:35. > :14:35.lot more attacks -- mistakes on her attacks and smashes. It is a clear

:14:36. > :15:12.sign that she feels comfortable. of a full powered smash, a straight

:15:13. > :15:16.slice, giving the shuttle a glancing blow makes it goes down steep and a

:15:17. > :16:00.little slower. That is bad luck. Elizabeth McCarron

:16:01. > :16:04.-- Elizabeth Cann getting into trouble in that deep corner. The

:16:05. > :16:07.follow-up was very nice, to see how badly she got to it but missing it

:16:08. > :16:28.was unfortunate. This is what expected in the English

:16:29. > :16:31.camp, Cann keep following. Keep adding the pressure and she will

:16:32. > :16:59.eventually crack which is perhaps what we are seeing.

:17:00. > :17:14.She finds the line again. Both you and I have played many years. And

:17:15. > :17:18.you know how difficult it is to play a match where you favourite to win,

:17:19. > :17:28.and you are playing against someone you so well. A compatriot of your

:17:29. > :17:34.own. You know how difficult that is. The coach in the camp has really

:17:35. > :17:36.prepared Walker well. She is not nervous, she is just getting on with

:17:37. > :17:51.the job which is not easy. Oh, yes. First time of asking.

:17:52. > :18:05.21-14. 15 minutes. That is the perfect start for the

:18:06. > :18:29.number seven seed. Really disciplined, on plan. It

:18:30. > :18:36.takes the spin out of her came -- her game, and she starts high

:18:37. > :19:25.clearing. You are doing really well.

:19:26. > :19:47.Play it off the centre, keep your patients. Don't panic. -- patience.

:19:48. > :19:54.Confirmation, 21-14 in favour of Sarah Walker.

:19:55. > :20:04.Elizabeth Cann representing Jersey. The two coaches are former England

:20:05. > :20:16.players, Mark Constable and Nathan Robertson. And Peter Jeffrey saying

:20:17. > :20:20.to Sarah Walker, he was really pleased, it was disciplined, staying

:20:21. > :20:25.to the game plan. As I said earlier, it has been a

:20:26. > :20:28.very good game plan. And she has been very disciplined and is

:20:29. > :20:35.following its most of the time and is showing how patient she is,

:20:36. > :20:41.waiting for the chances. As I said earlier, this match is prepared very

:20:42. > :20:48.well. Looking at it from the other side of

:20:49. > :20:53.it, I must admit I didn't get much of what the coaches were saying.

:20:54. > :20:59.From my point of view, I think that Cann has two play more aggressively

:21:00. > :21:06.now. She has two ad on the pressure and try to upset the rhythm. If she

:21:07. > :21:13.is not doing it, she will not win. In my book, how much energy has she

:21:14. > :21:22.got left? Even if there is only five minutes, give it the best. Better to

:21:23. > :21:28.do that than to lose nice and easy. But everything you have into five

:21:29. > :21:33.minutes and shake it up. I felt in that opening game that

:21:34. > :21:38.Elizabeth Cann was too reactive, instead of being proactive. It is

:21:39. > :21:43.very interesting that you are feeling the same as me. I have

:21:44. > :21:48.watched her over a number of years and I am not sure that is her style

:21:49. > :21:59.of game. Remember that bronze play-off match in Delhi with Susan

:22:00. > :22:07.Hughes. Elizabeth can just ran and ran and ran. She has got good skills

:22:08. > :22:16.but she does not like to use them as often as is perhaps we would like to

:22:17. > :22:21.see her use them. If I had been her coach, obviously not today but years

:22:22. > :22:26.ago, when she was coming up, I would have put a lot more emphasis on

:22:27. > :22:32.horror attacking game. The basic game is nice. She moves

:22:33. > :22:38.well on the court. She has very good technique, she can play almost any

:22:39. > :22:40.shot in the book. But she is lacking that winning shot which is something

:22:41. > :23:01.you have to work on. Yes. Stretching out nicely, leaving her

:23:02. > :23:22.playing it wide. You see, this is what will happen if

:23:23. > :23:27.Walker is getting insecure. Smashers start going out. That is what is

:23:28. > :24:11.Cann had to try to achieve. That insecurity. -- smashes.

:24:12. > :24:19.In case you are wondering what the noise is, I can tell you on an

:24:20. > :24:21.adjoining court, the second seed in the women's singles has secured her

:24:22. > :24:43.victory. Once again, we see here Sarah Walker

:24:44. > :24:49.is getting a little bit impatient. Pushing her shots a bit too much and

:24:50. > :24:56.making mistakes. These mistakes are mainly coming from the back line,

:24:57. > :25:02.the bass line. And I think that Elizabeth Cann should push towards

:25:03. > :25:07.that bass line as much as possible, and give her an invitation and see

:25:08. > :25:10.whether she will make a mistake. Because, at the moment, Cann is

:25:11. > :25:58.making more mistakes. That is it, going long. But he liked

:25:59. > :26:02.the tactics? I like the tactics but I would not have chosen such a high

:26:03. > :26:08.clear, I would have punched it a bit more. A bit flatter. That would add

:26:09. > :26:26.on the pace. That is delightful. A good shot. A

:26:27. > :26:28.slice shot. Very nicely done. It is even shorter than the first line

:26:29. > :26:54.which is a nice indication. This is a good rally. It is. She is

:26:55. > :26:59.putting herself in trouble there. That is where she has got to be

:27:00. > :27:08.strong. Punch another clear, don't open up so she has that diagonal.

:27:09. > :27:17.As soon as she played that crosscourt, all Walker had to do was

:27:18. > :27:20.play the straight block, and Cann had to run the longest diagonal on

:27:21. > :28:19.the court. A good, attacking smash. Good play

:28:20. > :28:25.by Elizabeth Cann. But there were two very nice punch

:28:26. > :28:31.clears from Elizabeth Cann in this rally. Going back to my point,

:28:32. > :28:47.putting on the pressure, towards the base line.

:28:48. > :28:58.This is developing into not only an intriguing battle but a physical

:28:59. > :29:03.battle as well, isn't it? Yes, I think you are right. That is

:29:04. > :29:10.where I possibly think age will come into it. Let us see. So far,

:29:11. > :29:12.Elizabeth Cann has done really well in this first half of the second

:29:13. > :29:21.game. Mid-game interval, with the

:29:22. > :30:25.advantage. Two point advantage. it all, Nathan Robertson was

:30:26. > :30:33.suggesting the punch clear around the head corner. Yes. He said that

:30:34. > :30:39.the reverse like crop shot from Sarah Walker is not her strongest,

:30:40. > :30:42.and therefore she could move up on the front court and try to get early

:30:43. > :31:08.on the tape on the forehand side. That is it. That is the one I have

:31:09. > :31:13.been looking for for a long time. The pledge clear into the deep

:31:14. > :31:29.forehand corner. This is a beauty. Very good play.

:31:30. > :32:29.There seemed to be a nice switch in the direction of attack. Yes, it

:32:30. > :32:31.worked well. Sarah Walker is not quick enough with her racket skills

:32:32. > :32:38.to get into position. That is disastrous. I am sorry to

:32:39. > :33:06.say. A service fault called again. Once

:33:07. > :33:08.again, the same. It is so correct. It is very good judging. I agree

:33:09. > :33:42.totally. You did not see that in the first

:33:43. > :33:48.game. She has listened to me! It is good. Really forcing herself

:33:49. > :33:58.underneath that one. Smashing it crosscourt.

:33:59. > :34:02.Four points, the advantage now. And just four points needed for the

:34:03. > :34:20.second game. close to making it, emphasises the

:34:21. > :34:26.point you were making at the end of the opening game, about playing

:34:27. > :34:29.people that you used to train with, you were former team mates, you know

:34:30. > :34:33.them terribly well, you are the favourite to win, all the pressure

:34:34. > :34:51.is on you. It is not an easy situation.

:34:52. > :35:05.She missed it. She is definitely nervous and I suspect. She was not

:35:06. > :35:13.missing with her attacking play in the first. She was not. That is

:35:14. > :35:22.going wide as well. Suddenly, a lot of mistakes are creeping in.

:35:23. > :35:26.Definitely, she feels the pressure now. The insecurities creeping into

:35:27. > :35:52.her game. The English national champion needed

:35:53. > :36:06.a run of points. If ever she did, it is right now. With that going along,

:36:07. > :36:11.it means that Elizabeth Cann has five opportunities to close out this

:36:12. > :36:26.second and send it to a decider. That is good play by Walker. Never

:36:27. > :36:34.give up. There is still the possibility. It is only four points.

:36:35. > :36:47.It still can be done. Believe in yourself.

:36:48. > :36:56.The look of the net cord. Everybody needs a bit of luck at times. She

:36:57. > :37:02.earned her own luck there, she took it early. Next time, she should not

:37:03. > :37:09.smash the back can decide, either body or crosscourt. Go for the

:37:10. > :37:16.forehand. Three times, she has been smashing down there. DMA. It did not

:37:17. > :37:22.work, and what a way to finish a game. That is disappointing. Nobody

:37:23. > :37:29.will be more disappointed than Sarah Walker herself. An error on serve.

:37:30. > :37:38.It means that Elizabeth Cann takes the second game, 21-17. It is 1-1.

:37:39. > :37:44.I wonder if the fact she has been called a fault on her serve twice

:37:45. > :38:12.previously made her a bit nervous. A bit more variation. She is just

:38:13. > :38:16.waiting for the shots. We need to make a guess. You have got so much

:38:17. > :39:10.more to offer. This third round match, beautifully

:39:11. > :39:16.poised. Sarah Walker, the number seven seed from England, she took

:39:17. > :39:21.the first, 21-14, Elizabeth Cann, the bronze medallist from four years

:39:22. > :39:23.ago, fighting back to take the second, 21-17. Everything to play

:39:24. > :39:51.for in the deciding game. It is just wide. I hope everybody

:39:52. > :39:57.could hear what the England coaches were saying, but just reiterate the

:39:58. > :39:59.point that Peter Jeffrey was making to Sarah Walker. Take a deep

:40:00. > :40:14.breath! Sarah is having more options when it

:40:15. > :40:22.comes to technical skills. He wants her to use it more. And not just

:40:23. > :40:27.play clear and smashes. Obviously, if you can control it, that would be

:40:28. > :40:34.lovely. The problem is that if you are nervous and you want to venture

:40:35. > :40:41.into more exotic shots, suddenly, more mistakes are creeping in. It is

:40:42. > :40:46.a very difficult fine line. As we saw from the last rally, with

:40:47. > :40:53.Elizabeth Cann rushing play the back and kill, Elizabeth Cann has

:40:54. > :40:57.confidence that we did not see so much of in the opening game, and I

:40:58. > :41:02.wonder if she is going to take one or two risks to try to exploit the

:41:03. > :41:10.nervousness of her opponent. I would do so. Me too. So far, a very good

:41:11. > :41:35.start by Sarah Walker. I think she is keeping it together well.

:41:36. > :41:45.Was that frustration afterwards, or was that some sort of pain? I am

:41:46. > :41:50.sure it is sheer frustration. That is all right! I thought for a

:41:51. > :42:02.ghastly moment she may have heard herself. She's OK.

:42:03. > :42:19.It is set up beautifully at the Emirates Arena. We are going over to

:42:20. > :42:21.BBC1 in a few moments, or you will not miss a single point from this

:42:22. > :42:29.enthralling match between Sarah Walker and Elizabeth Cann.

:42:30. > :42:33.We are heading to BBC1 in a moment. Before we do that, let's pop to

:42:34. > :42:40.Jonathan Edwards, who is watching the men's time trial.

:42:41. > :42:47.At the moment, the Rwandan is leading, but in truth, the crowd

:42:48. > :42:50.loving it. Somebody coming through now, these advertising hoardings are

:42:51. > :42:59.useful for something. The conditions are good. There is something almost

:43:00. > :43:04.sadistic about this, it is called the race of truth, riders digging

:43:05. > :43:06.deep into their soul, pushing themselves to the limit, which is

:43:07. > :43:13.what we expect to see when David Mellor comes through, Alex Dowsett,

:43:14. > :43:19.Rohan Dennis, he is the real favourite. But at the moment, it is

:43:20. > :43:24.dry, the sun is sort of out, so it is set for what should be a

:43:25. > :43:30.fantastic time trial. We will go back to Jonathan at the

:43:31. > :43:39.time trial later, over on BBC1. Do join us there. You can watch every

:43:40. > :43:43.single sport on our website. And, of course, full coverage on BBC Radio

:43:44. > :43:48.five Live. On the red button, the live coverage continues, there is

:43:49. > :43:54.squash right now. And comedy coverage on the red button. Do join

:43:55. > :44:18.us on BBC1 in a few moments. Goodbye for now.

:44:19. > :44:22.And it's about time that I did something about that.
