:01:14. > :01:20.right here, in 11 days since a bunch of athletes walked onto the stage?

:01:21. > :01:26.11 days since we raised millions for Unicef's special Commonwealth Games

:01:27. > :01:33.Fund, helping kids around the Commonwealth? And here we are, the

:01:34. > :01:37.difficult bit, where we have got to say cheerio. And how do we do that?

:06:31. > :06:35.# Puts it in a bag and never thinks to mutter

:06:36. > :06:37.# And he packs his lunch in a Sunblest bag

:06:38. > :06:43.# He never lets on But I know cos he once told me

:06:44. > :06:47.# He let me know a secret about the money in his kitty

:06:48. > :07:01.He's gonna buy a dinghy Gonna call her Dignity

:07:02. > :07:07.# And I'll sail her up the west coast

:07:08. > :07:11.# I'll be on my holidays They'll be doing their rounds

:07:15. > :07:34.# They'll say, "Isn't she pretty That ship called Dignity?"

:07:35. > :07:39.We are thanking the workers of the city of Glasgow here. 220 of them,

:07:40. > :07:41.representing the various different departments.

:07:42. > :07:45.# And I'm telling this story in a faraway scene

:07:46. > :07:47.# Sipping down raki and reading Maynard Keynes

:09:03. > :09:38.# And I'm thinking how good it would be

:09:39. > :10:20.Thanks to the workers of the city. A fitting song from Deacon Blue. Now,

:10:21. > :10:27.it is time for the volunteers, the Clyde-siders, to have their moment

:10:28. > :10:33.inside Hampden Park. More than 50,000 of them applied to help. Only

:10:34. > :10:46.15,000 were required. It was a record for those who put their hand

:10:47. > :10:51.out and stepped forward. We are incredibly proud to be here. We

:10:52. > :10:53.would love for you all to join us to show massive appreciation to all of

:10:54. > :11:26.the Clyde-sider volunteers! # I wanna show myself

:11:27. > :11:35.into whatever I choose # I want to know that this

:11:36. > :11:47.is really biting at my heel # I want to dream it

:11:48. > :12:26.and it to be true # I want to be the one

:12:27. > :12:29.they say, "Hey, he's coming too" # We'll live here

:12:30. > :12:38.I promise you on any more # So say it, say it

:12:39. > :13:52.Say you'll be my Messiah # So say it, say it

:13:53. > :15:01.Say you'll be my Messiah. # 15,000 volunteers, to help the Games

:15:02. > :15:08.run so smoothly. More than Melbourne and Manchester combined! Indeed, and

:15:09. > :15:12.these Clyde-siders, their enthusiasm was undimmed in sunshine or

:15:13. > :15:21.torrential downpours of the last couple of days! That was close to an

:15:22. > :15:26.Olympian scale. The Gold Coast coming up, of course, in Queensland.

:15:27. > :15:31.And then who might be the host in 2022? That will be announced next

:15:32. > :15:36.year, and it could be Durban, in South Africa, Edmonton in Canada,

:15:37. > :15:42.previous host, and Cardiff might be considering a bid. So, all of these

:15:43. > :15:45.cities will be watching. People have spoken very highly of the Glasgow

:15:46. > :15:54.Commonwealth Games, but again, the standard has been set. And the

:15:55. > :15:58.festival spirit continues, because we have got not one, but two

:15:59. > :16:14.stages. It is not Glastonbury, quite. And for all these athletes,

:16:15. > :16:17.of course, a chance to relax. For some the competition ended a few

:16:18. > :16:22.days ago but they have had a chance to hang around. Some have decided

:16:23. > :16:38.just about five hours ago to come back up and enjoy the party.

:16:39. > :16:46.Now, it has all been about the Glasgow Games, but shortly we will

:34:48. > :34:52.stories here tonight, amongst all the athletes, enjoying the closing

:34:53. > :35:00.ceremony. We have got Tom Daley from Team England here. Tom, you will of

:35:01. > :35:04.course were competing the diving. Congratulations on your silver and

:35:05. > :35:09.the gold as well, tell us about the atmosphere. The whole Commonwealth

:35:10. > :35:13.Games here in Scotland has been amazing. So friendly, the atmosphere

:35:14. > :35:19.is amazing. Everybody is diving really well in Team England at the

:35:20. > :35:24.moment, which is exciting. And for yourself, what will you take away

:35:25. > :35:28.from the Games? It is always really nice to retain your title, and I

:35:29. > :35:33.have been working hard at that. For me, it is also looking at and

:35:34. > :35:38.helping the younger divers, like Alicia Blagg, when she won, seeing

:35:39. > :35:44.all the hard work paying off. There we go, Tom Daley, ladies and

:35:45. > :35:51.gentlemen. And next to me, the big man, from grenade. What was it like

:35:52. > :35:59.experiencing the hand of roar? It was an amazing experience. The

:36:00. > :36:05.stadium was packed. Scotland are really true fans of athletics and

:36:06. > :36:09.the Commonwealth Games. You can come back any time, big man, we love

:36:10. > :36:13.that. And you did not mind the weather? It is something you cannot

:36:14. > :36:18.control, everybody has to deal with it. But the crowd really cancel out

:36:19. > :36:25.the weather, with their warmth and support. That is beautiful! There

:36:26. > :36:29.you go. I am going to squeeze in, because obviously, in four years'

:36:30. > :36:34.time, we have got something special, it is going to be brilliant

:36:35. > :36:39.having the Games on the Gold Coast. You must be looking forward to

:36:40. > :36:43.that? Yes, for sure. We cannot wait. We had really hot weather here when

:36:44. > :36:49.we raced, and that is exactly what it is going to be like on the Gold

:36:50. > :36:54.Coast. For years will fly by. It was hot when you were racing - can you

:36:55. > :36:59.stay around for a while?! And as for you, what will you take away from

:37:00. > :37:03.the Scottish crowds? Well, it is my first Games, and it was the most

:37:04. > :37:07.amazing experience. The Scottish people have just been so lovely and

:37:08. > :37:14.accommodating, and really made us all feel really welcome. I am a Gold

:37:15. > :37:18.Coast girl myself, so I cannot wait to get back home and experience the

:37:19. > :37:22.Commonwealth Games there, hopefully. Let's hear it for the Aussies, they

:37:23. > :37:28.have been great all the way through! So many stories, so many

:37:29. > :37:32.people to get through. I can feel the emotion building, with this

:37:33. > :37:38.music in the background. How has it been for you, coming from Barbados?

:37:39. > :37:42.It has been great, the tournament, the people of Glasgow really came

:37:43. > :37:52.out. They were really friendly. They really show their pride tonight, the

:37:53. > :37:56.young at heart came out. We are shaking off our hard man image in

:37:57. > :38:06.Glasgow. It is now my dubious honour to say, that WAS the Glasgow

:38:07. > :38:12.Commonwealth 2014 Games. I hope you have enjoyed what we have done over

:38:13. > :38:16.the last 11 days. Dougie MacLean and his band are getting ready to play

:38:17. > :38:26.as out. Thank you for everything. We have loved having you here. I hope

:38:27. > :38:33.you have loved it as well. And now, Dougie MacLean, who wrote a

:38:34. > :38:38.song on a beach in France in 1987. He had been travelling around and

:38:39. > :38:48.was feeling homesick, and this is what he wrote.

:38:49. > :39:00.# In these last few days I've been afraid

:39:01. > :39:10.# I've been telling old stories Singing songs

:39:11. > :39:14.# That make me think about where I've come from

:39:15. > :39:22.# That's the reason why I seem so far away today

:39:23. > :39:31.# That I think about you all the time

:39:32. > :39:47.# Know that it would make me more than sad

:39:48. > :39:54.# Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

:39:55. > :39:57.# Now I have moved and I've kept on moving

:39:58. > :40:01.# Proved the points that I needed proving

:40:02. > :40:05.# Lost the friends that I needed losing

:40:06. > :40:18.# Stolen dreams Yes, there's no denying

:40:19. > :40:22.# I have travelled hard Sometimes with conscience flying

:40:23. > :40:51.# You know that it would make me more than sad

:40:52. > :41:03.# Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

:41:04. > :41:23.# You know that it would make me more than sad

:41:24. > :41:55.# Caledonia's been everything I've ever had

:41:56. > :43:19.# For auld lang syne, my dear For auld lang syne

:43:20. > :43:34.# And there's a hand My trusty fere

:43:35. > :43:43.# And we'll tak a right gude-willy waught

:43:44. > :44:55.ANDREW COTTER: And that brings us to an end. That was the closing

:44:56. > :45:11.ceremony of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. A grand closing ceremony, or

:45:12. > :45:18.an extraordinarily impressive opening ceremony, ahead of the

:45:19. > :45:31.football match next weekend. But it is now very nearly over.

:45:32. > :46:09.So, thank you to Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games you have given

:46:10. > :47:17.us. CLARE BALDING: FANTASTIC SHOTS FROM

:47:18. > :47:23.ABOVE. KYLIE WAS LOVING THAT, ALTHOUGH I

:47:24. > :47:28.WAS slightly concerned with both outfits that she did not have enough

:47:29. > :47:32.clothes on for the Scottish evening! But there were moments which really

:47:33. > :47:38.resonated. The David Dixon Award to the Athlete Of The Games for

:47:39. > :47:41.sporting excellence went to Frankie Jones of Wales, and there was huge

:47:42. > :47:44.applause, even before Prince Imran announced her name. But also,

:47:45. > :47:50.massive applause when he said that this was the best Games ever. Hazel

:47:51. > :47:55.Irvine has rushed from her commentary position to join

:47:56. > :48:04.Katherine Grainger, Steve Cram and myself. Oh, that was a good party.

:48:05. > :48:11.It was great. Katherine Grainger and myself had a little dance, actually.

:48:12. > :48:19.I was so happy I did not wear my pink outfit tonight. It would have

:48:20. > :48:26.been embarrassing! Oh, dear! Oh, Lord!

:48:27. > :48:33.STEVE CRAM: Go, girls! I actually think that Kylie Minogue, along with

:48:34. > :48:41.Claudia Fragapane, is the other Pocket Rocket of the Games! Back to

:48:42. > :48:49.Frankie Jones, what a fantastic award for her to get. I know that

:48:50. > :48:54.you identified ways -- with her as an athlete, didn't you? Yes, you see

:48:55. > :49:01.those athletes live, and they are stunning. I think I can relate. She

:49:02. > :49:07.got silver after silver after silver, and then cracked it with the

:49:08. > :49:10.gold, and I can relate to that. I met her afterwards, I met her

:49:11. > :49:14.before, she was so emotional. Everybody you speak to in June

:49:15. > :49:20.sticks says what an incredible influence she is. She sets the

:49:21. > :49:26.standard. She is retiring now. I was saying to her, are you going to have

:49:27. > :49:32.a holiday? She says she wants to stay involved in gymnastics and give

:49:33. > :49:36.it all back. Amazing. It was lovely to see her get that award, and I was

:49:37. > :49:41.not really conscious of that award before. As you say, it is not just

:49:42. > :49:45.for performance, it is for the influence exerted by that athlete

:49:46. > :49:52.on, presumably, future generations, by the way they have carried

:49:53. > :49:56.themselves through the Games. It is the style and the grace of the

:49:57. > :50:01.person as well. I think with any of these major Games, we talk a lot

:50:02. > :50:06.about the gold medallists and the champions, but it is always the

:50:07. > :50:10.stories. This afternoon I was watching the cycling road race in

:50:11. > :50:14.the rain, and I got chatting to a couple of people next to me. Were

:50:15. > :50:17.saying they had never been to an event like this before, they were

:50:18. > :50:23.sort of sports fans, but this is what captivates people. It is the

:50:24. > :50:27.little journeys, the big journey is talking about Lynsey Sharp, she is

:50:28. > :50:31.quite well-known, but a lot of people are not well-known. That is

:50:32. > :50:35.what really draws people into events like this. Sports like rhythmic

:50:36. > :50:40.gymnastics every now and then get their moment on TV, and we find out

:50:41. > :50:44.about people like this. Yes, and possibly Jo Pavey would have been in

:50:45. > :50:49.the running for that, in terms of what she has done. She has inspired

:50:50. > :50:55.in a different way, she is probably now inspiring a bunch of 40-year-old

:50:56. > :51:00.mums to get out there and run! If you want to get involved in sport,

:51:01. > :51:06.then you can go to the BBC website, go to the Get Inspired section,

:51:07. > :51:08.because it would be rather lovely to think that these Games are about

:51:09. > :51:15.more than achievement, Steve. We have heard what we believe this has

:51:16. > :51:18.done for Glasgow, and we hope that is a long-lasting effect, but also

:51:19. > :51:21.for sport in general, seeing people as young as 13 and as old as 67

:51:22. > :51:33.winning medals. It goes back to my first

:51:34. > :51:37.Commonwealth Games, 1978. I could not get my coach out to Canada and

:51:38. > :51:42.it was a bit of a shock but I bumped into a guy at the warm up track, and

:51:43. > :51:47.he said, Stevie! I said, what are you doing here? He said, I am the

:51:48. > :51:53.manager of the Turks and Caicos Islands team. He knew my coach,

:51:54. > :52:03.Jimmy. He was on his way out and said, I will get him accreditation.

:52:04. > :52:07.He became the coach for the whole week for them. All of them were in a

:52:08. > :52:11.steel band and they have been picked because they were in a band rather

:52:12. > :52:15.than athletes! And I thought, this is great. Up till that point, I had

:52:16. > :52:20.their experience of that and I have never forgotten the thought that,

:52:21. > :52:23.this will be it, the chance to represent their country and it will

:52:24. > :52:29.never get any better for them than that. For others, yes, it is the

:52:30. > :52:33.Usain Bolts and part of a bigger thing, but we should never forget

:52:34. > :52:37.the small people who come to this. And actually, Usain Bolt being one

:52:38. > :52:41.of the bigger names who came, I was very struck by his performance and

:52:42. > :52:48.Jamaica winning the relay, but the way he entered into it as well and

:52:49. > :52:53.his moves are better! But it was great the way he interacted with the

:52:54. > :53:01.crowd, wasn't it? Yes, and it is the lack of cynicism. As we see you

:53:02. > :53:05.saying, yes, he has got to be brought into the Scottish ranks

:53:06. > :53:11.because he clearly knows The Proclaimers. Fantastic, on fire last

:53:12. > :53:17.night! But last night it was said that the world is a pretty cynical

:53:18. > :53:22.place but these Games are a pretty cynicism-free environment and it is

:53:23. > :53:27.down to the fact you have such a diversity of people, people with

:53:28. > :53:29.full-time jobs for whom it is once-in-a-lifetime experience and it

:53:30. > :53:34.brings you back down to earth and reminds you of how lucky you are.

:53:35. > :53:38.And just looking at these shots, this is the biggest name in probably

:53:39. > :53:44.world sport, and he is getting in there and he is the one taking the

:53:45. > :53:47.selfies, and for anybody you question for one second anything he

:53:48. > :53:50.was either misreported as saying or not running as an individual in the

:53:51. > :53:57.100 metres, don't you think that would have changed the mind of any

:53:58. > :54:00.cynics? Absolutely. Let's counterbalance this argument. There

:54:01. > :54:04.are athletes who come here to improve their careers and win gold

:54:05. > :54:08.medals and Usain Bolt has been through all of that. So he is at a

:54:09. > :54:12.part of his career which is about giving back a bit, and that is what

:54:13. > :54:17.I love about. He didn't have to come but he came and he knows what he is

:54:18. > :54:22.in sport and world sport, and he has added to these Games just by being

:54:23. > :54:30.here. And I would say... I mean, sadly, Mo was not here. And if you

:54:31. > :54:36.couldn't, and didn't come, you have missed out on something. But I hope

:54:37. > :54:39.it has refreshed Bolt's desire to be part of this sport. He might have

:54:40. > :54:44.been thinking, there are bigger things out there I can do. But I

:54:45. > :54:49.hope his experience in this stadium means we will see him for a few more

:54:50. > :54:52.years. They are going to have a tough act to follow in the Gold

:54:53. > :54:57.Coast but what do you hope they will take with them from Glasgow? There

:54:58. > :55:02.is so much. As we have said, the performances will always be there.

:55:03. > :55:09.The superstars, some people who will become superstars. Frankie Jones, we

:55:10. > :55:12.now almost her. I think the spirit here was very special and it still

:55:13. > :55:21.retains the title of the Friendly Games. -- we now know her. It is

:55:22. > :55:25.all-inclusive, everyone having a great time as well as the top end

:55:26. > :55:28.competition, and the great thing for Australia is that it is a very

:55:29. > :55:33.laid-back country but they are passionate about their sport. It is

:55:34. > :55:37.like after our Olympics. That was named the greatest Games. They have

:55:38. > :55:41.a tough thing to follow but they love the competition so they will

:55:42. > :55:44.try to raise the bar again but if you can keep the spirit and

:55:45. > :55:54.enjoyment and involve the whole city and the people, the spectators, the

:55:55. > :55:56.volunteers so everybody has a great time, then it is special. We have

:55:57. > :56:03.most certainly had a great time here and a massive thank you to everybody

:56:04. > :56:09.who has been so positive about the Games. The Clyde-siders, the 15,000

:56:10. > :56:14.volunteers, with all of that it has been very, very special. For me it

:56:15. > :56:20.has been joyous and I hope this last 11 days has given you a glimpse into

:56:21. > :56:24.something that is here everyday. The humanity, the creativity, the good

:56:25. > :56:31.humour of everybody here in Glasgow and from all of us here, we would

:56:32. > :56:33.like to say farewell to the Armadillo and the Chris Hoy

:56:34. > :56:37.velodrome for the time being, and thank you to Glasgow and all of the

:56:38. > :56:41.athletes all over the Commonwealth, and thank you to you for sharing

:56:42. > :56:52.these last 11 days with us. It has been a blast. Bye-bye.

:56:53. > :57:27.COMMENTATOR: They have got their first gold!

:57:28. > :59:58.# Drop all your troubles on the riverside

:59:59. > :00:04.# Catch a painted pony Let the spinning wheel fly
