0:00:35 > 0:00:40Hello and welcome to Manchester, the home of British cycling, for the

0:00:40 > 0:00:49Track Cycling World Cup and the star of the show is Katie Archibald who

0:00:49 > 0:00:55has year headed into the final of omnium looking for her first

0:00:55 > 0:01:04individual world title.Archibald is in a good spot here. Archibald leads

0:01:04 > 0:01:09by 2 points. This is all going to come down to the final sprint. So,

0:01:09 > 0:01:15so close. Can Katie Archibald hold on to that gold medal position here

0:01:15 > 0:01:21in the sprint? And Archibald really wants it and makes sure she gets it.

0:01:21 > 0:01:26That was absolutely fantastic. Gold for Katie Archibald, gold for Great

0:01:26 > 0:01:44Britain.Katie is one of six British Olympic champions here. The men's

0:01:44 > 0:01:53Team won gold last year. And there is a new partnership for the women

0:01:53 > 0:01:59with Capewell leading. Chris Latham took bronze in the scratch race in

0:01:59 > 0:02:07the World Championship in April, can he make the podium again? Youngsters

0:02:07 > 0:02:17Emily Kay and Elinor Dickinson go up again a strong field in the women's

0:02:17 > 0:02:29scratch race. Chris Boardman and Chris Hoy are here. We have seen the

0:02:29 > 0:02:36departure of chairman, Jess Varnish is suing UK Sport and the endurance

0:02:36 > 0:02:44coach has gone. Which will have the biggest impact?Take your pick!

0:02:44 > 0:02:49Potentially the court case against UK Sport and British Cycling could

0:02:49 > 0:02:53have huge ramifications. We will have to wait and see. Of course the

0:02:53 > 0:02:58door is still up to Jess Varnish, if you're fast enough there is a place

0:02:58 > 0:03:04in the team. But it is going to run and run. It has been a busy week.

0:03:04 > 0:03:11What does British cycling have to do?It has been a bit game of

0:03:11 > 0:03:14thrones, it is following a national trend. They have done exactly what

0:03:14 > 0:03:19they had to do. They have got new people in, massive amount of faith

0:03:19 > 0:03:25in Julie Harrington, a strong, authentic leader and she is getting

0:03:25 > 0:03:30done and she has changed the systems and employ new people. I don't think

0:03:30 > 0:03:36there is anything else they could be doing. There is a line to tread,

0:03:36 > 0:03:41between motivating and getting the best out of athletes and providing a

0:03:41 > 0:03:44holistic care you need to make sure that mentally they're in the right

0:03:44 > 0:03:49space.It is difficult and every athlete is different. This is elite

0:03:49 > 0:03:56sport. This is tough. It is about tiny margins, I have found often the

0:03:56 > 0:04:01athletes are the toughest people on themselves. It is not about a coach

0:04:01 > 0:04:04cracking the whip, it comes from within. But it is about getting that

0:04:04 > 0:04:10balance right and you know I'm sure British cycling are looking to

0:04:10 > 0:04:18improve.Do you fancy the job of chairman?I think I will let it

0:04:18 > 0:04:25settle. I'm having a quiet life.Now you remember that the only event

0:04:25 > 0:04:31British cycling didn't qualify a team for at the Olympics was the

0:04:31 > 0:04:38women's team sprint and we have a new line up, leading out will be

0:04:38 > 0:04:4419-year-old Sophie Capewell.I finished my o' levels in June and I

0:04:44 > 0:04:49was full-time since July. And it has been a hectic couple of months with

0:04:49 > 0:04:54the Euros and the World Cup.It is exciting to have her on board, she

0:04:54 > 0:05:01is one of the more advanced senior Academy riders and she is doing well

0:05:01 > 0:05:06and working hard. Hopefully she can pull it out of the bag.It feels

0:05:06 > 0:05:12like a big step to race with the likes of Katie, that is great,

0:05:12 > 0:05:17because she like makious feel better about -- makes you feel better about

0:05:17 > 0:05:24it and it makes it a bit easier. But it is crazy that I'm racing with

0:05:24 > 0:05:28people like Kristina Vogel. Each time we have got faster and faster.

0:05:28 > 0:05:35That shows that we are on the right path. Hopefully we can go fastest

0:05:35 > 0:05:43and qualify top 8 to get a second ride this weekend.Katie Marchant

0:05:43 > 0:05:52and Sophie cape we Capewell got through. But then lost to German y.

0:05:52 > 0:05:59Let's join the races. Chris Boardman is in the commentary box with Simon

0:05:59 > 0:06:04Brotherton.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13COMMENTATOR: You can see the way they threw their weight out of the

0:06:13 > 0:06:19gate. Timing is so important in this event and this is the important bit,

0:06:19 > 0:06:28the second half. The Dutch have work to doing. Its an enormous gap in is

0:06:28 > 0:06:37in kind of event, but they're closing it quickly.Very close. But

0:06:37 > 0:06:42holy Holy Brother Cycling Team taking it by over a tenth of a

0:06:42 > 0:06:50second.They got out of the gate quickly. The quicker of the Holy

0:06:50 > 0:06:55Brother Teach. They slowed in the second half and it almost allowed

0:06:55 > 0:07:08the team from the Netherlands to get back on terms. There is the rider on

0:07:08 > 0:07:18lap two. And the wing time is there.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25That is for the bronze medal. The race for gold coming up and what a

0:07:25 > 0:07:32race it promises to be as well. Welte and Vogel have been there for

0:07:32 > 0:07:38ever. They're probably the most experienced female sprint riders,

0:07:38 > 0:07:45certainly, here tonight. The world champions. Last mental rehearsal

0:07:45 > 0:07:53with 20 seconds to go.Well, Kristina Vogel is 27 today. It is

0:07:53 > 0:08:01her birthday. Will she celebrate with a gold medal or will the world

0:08:01 > 0:08:10champions prevail? Two laps of the track.Great start by both teams.

0:08:10 > 0:08:16You will see the gap, don't panic, that is an acceleration room they're

0:08:16 > 0:08:29giving themselves. On this last lap, twho has got the speed in Nair legs

0:08:29 > 0:08:37to secure the gold medal? Up to the line and it is Germany who take it.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41And the Russian world champions have been beaten.Just as I was saying

0:08:41 > 0:08:46is, they lay off to use the slip stream, in fact the Russian team

0:08:46 > 0:08:52didn't get it right and didn't get on terms. So they gave the German

0:08:52 > 0:08:57pair a 10 metre head start. You can't do that.The world champions

0:08:57 > 0:09:02weren't beaten, they were thrashed! Absolutely and I don't know whether

0:09:02 > 0:09:05it was technical or physical, I suspect the latter. But never got on

0:09:05 > 0:09:09terms. They never got it together. It is a dangerous thing to do laying

0:09:09 > 0:09:14off. But they have such experience. So they run into the slip stream and

0:09:14 > 0:09:19when they take their turn they're already travelling a K an hour

0:09:19 > 0:09:25faster. Vogel still enjoying competition. You mention it there,

0:09:25 > 0:09:29you could see the joy on her face at getting that victory.Happy

0:09:29 > 0:09:36birthday!Many happy returns to one of the great stars of world track

0:09:36 > 0:09:42cycling, Kristina Vogel, who is a very popular racer. She is one of

0:09:42 > 0:09:53the current greats. We produced a PB twice and between Miriam and Vogel

0:09:53 > 0:09:58they're world beaters.Chris Boardman said looking at you both,

0:09:58 > 0:10:02your technique is looking good.We have been working hard on team

0:10:02 > 0:10:07sprint is our way into the Olympics this time and we have been putting

0:10:07 > 0:10:11emphasis on improving our standing lap and me working on my starts and

0:10:11 > 0:10:14being able to back up and to see it coming together is exciting for the

0:10:14 > 0:10:21future.You led the both of you out well. What was it like, you're only

0:10:21 > 0:10:2519 and only your third experience apt this level. What was it like in

0:10:25 > 0:10:32front of home crowd? It was amazing and it gave me that extra push. I

0:10:32 > 0:10:39PB-ed in my lap and it has been amazing. The Russians are here and

0:10:39 > 0:10:45our biggest rival in the team sprint, so it was a bit kind of a

0:10:45 > 0:10:50dream and it is nice that we can celebrate the gold medal and on my

0:10:50 > 0:10:55birthday as well. You didn't just beat the Russians, you beat them by

0:10:55 > 0:11:00a lot. They're the world and European champions.Yeah, we see it

0:11:00 > 0:11:03a long way to the World Championship, it was a good race

0:11:03 > 0:11:08from us today and the time was very good. We haven't been, I don't

0:11:08 > 0:11:13know... More than a year not so fast like today and I thought the

0:11:13 > 0:11:20conditions are not so good here. So yeah, looking forward for the worlds

0:11:20 > 0:11:27and we are a very good team and hopefully we can beat the Russians.

0:11:27 > 0:11:33Cristie ya Vogel celebrating her birthday in style. Yes they're not

0:11:33 > 0:11:38slowing down. Often you have a step back after success, but they have

0:11:38 > 0:11:42the motivation to keep going. What about the British team?I think it

0:11:42 > 0:11:47was a solid performance, with it being a personal best for Sophie,

0:11:47 > 0:11:53that was a positive. The team had a personal best as well. It is a young

0:11:53 > 0:12:02squad. Although Kate is the most experienced she is young. We have

0:12:02 > 0:12:06young riders coming through. There is work to be done. But they will

0:12:06 > 0:12:12take encouragement from that.Becky James, having retired w what a great

0:12:12 > 0:12:17career she had, but on the big stage she was great. It was an amazing

0:12:17 > 0:12:21year in 2016 to make the World Championships, she made it by the

0:12:21 > 0:12:29skin of her teeth and had such a long break and won a gold in the

0:12:29 > 0:12:34Keirin and won two medals in the Olympics. She was overjoyed and the

0:12:34 > 0:12:39whole team was sad to see her go, but she will be enjoying life I'm

0:12:39 > 0:12:47sure.The women's endurance is so strong, women's sprinting needs bowl

0:12:47 > 0:12:53sterg, would that be fair?We are blessed with the strength in the

0:12:53 > 0:12:57endurance squad and in comparison the sprint isn't as strong. But

0:12:57 > 0:13:02there is time. We have two and a half years to two. Things can change

0:13:02 > 0:13:05quickly, young riders can improve quickly. That competition within

0:13:05 > 0:13:09will push them on and we could be talking about a new star in two or

0:13:09 > 0:13:15teleyears.-- two or three years. It is interesting when young faces come

0:13:15 > 0:13:23through and that has been true with the men's team with the Olympic

0:13:23 > 0:13:33golwinning trio, it was a chance for new faces to make themselves known.

0:13:33 > 0:13:39The men's team sprint final is under way. Jack Carlin looks to give

0:13:39 > 0:13:44Britain a fast start. A stung first lap for Britain. And coming round

0:13:44 > 0:13:49with one lap to go and Britain are winning is in one well and Joe

0:13:49 > 0:13:53Truman looks to bring it home. Has he got the legs to make sure it is

0:13:53 > 0:14:02gold? He has. Fantastic riding! After a strong ride in qualify,

0:14:02 > 0:14:10Britain brought in Ryan Owens and joined Carlin and Truman. They faced

0:14:10 > 0:14:18a strong Polish trio, but beat them to make it into the bronze medal

0:14:18 > 0:14:25ride-off. Here are Simon and Chris. COMMENTATOR: Bronze on the line for

0:14:25 > 0:14:37this young British trio against the Dutch.Carlin for Britain.A solid

0:14:37 > 0:14:42start. Beautiful timing out of gates. Almost caught the rest of the

0:14:42 > 0:14:49team out.Britain leading. Ryan Owens gritting his teeth. I think it

0:14:49 > 0:14:55is Hoogland for the Netherlands as they take the bell. The Dutch are in

0:14:55 > 0:15:04front.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Truman coming up to the line for Great Britain. The Dutch may have

0:15:07 > 0:15:14got it, they have. They take it point -- by 0.1 49.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16got it, they have. They take it point -- by 0.1 49. That really was

0:15:16 > 0:15:23blink of an eye stuff.Great race, didn't go the way that many in the

0:15:23 > 0:15:33stadium would have liked.Roy van den Berg, Theo Boss and Utley, bags

0:15:33 > 0:15:38of experience there, as there is on this side of the track. Robert

0:15:38 > 0:15:46Forstmann, Max Levy. The Germans are the world record holders in this

0:15:46 > 0:15:57event.Three laps of the track and you can see there was an issue there

0:15:57 > 0:16:01trying to get out of the gate.I think it was a wheel slip. I don't

0:16:01 > 0:16:08think it was mechanical. It was van den Berg, came out of the gate I

0:16:08 > 0:16:15think.Massive wheel slip and his wake went forward which compounded

0:16:15 > 0:16:27the problem. It is a false start and I think they will get to go again.

0:16:27 > 0:16:34He is away this time, three laps of the track for the gold medal. It is

0:16:34 > 0:16:44van den Berg and forced and hurtling away. That is what you would expect

0:16:44 > 0:16:48to see, the second pair holding them together. The third rider getting

0:16:48 > 0:16:52plenty of shelter and the second rider giving themselves room to

0:16:52 > 0:16:56work.Van den Berg did well, gave them a platform here but very close

0:16:56 > 0:17:05as they take the bell.0.2 of a second is an enormous gap in this

0:17:05 > 0:17:10event and it is going further out again. The Germans looked to have

0:17:10 > 0:17:17got this comfortably.Indeed they have. I almost half a second,

0:17:17 > 0:17:25Germany beating them. It must be his lucky green socks, he would tend to

0:17:25 > 0:17:32wear them. A very strong ride on lap three. There is Robert Forster

0:17:32 > 0:17:46month. Look at the strength of power there. Levy taking over. Strong and

0:17:46 > 0:17:58controlled effort. Confirmation that Germany take the gold.May

0:17:58 > 0:17:58controlled effort. Confirmation that Germany take the gold.May be the

0:17:58 > 0:18:04last ride didn't come together as much as we would have hoped but the

0:18:04 > 0:18:09performance in the first round and the qualifying as well was good. It

0:18:09 > 0:18:15sets us up well again to focus on next year 's race and the worlds and

0:18:15 > 0:18:22Commonwealth Games. We are trying to gain as many race experiences as we

0:18:22 > 0:18:28can.You have done well so far, what was the difference today between

0:18:28 > 0:18:33getting on the podium and missing out?In the final we didn't quite

0:18:33 > 0:18:37get the full execution right, I got a big slip off the line in the final

0:18:37 > 0:18:47and we have had problems in training this week with that. As Jack said,

0:18:47 > 0:18:52we are still coming here for experience and training hard with

0:18:52 > 0:18:55the future in mind. We are still happy with that performance today,

0:18:55 > 0:19:00we would have liked to have reached the podium but not everything can go

0:19:00 > 0:19:04our way and it is the first team sprint where something major has

0:19:04 > 0:19:09something has gone wrong. To still come away with fourth place we have

0:19:09 > 0:19:16done all right. You have to get used to not getting on the podium all the

0:19:16 > 0:19:24time, not having it all your own way and you are 20, Ryan is 22, you have

0:19:24 > 0:19:30achieved much in a short time it bodes well for the future.Yes, you

0:19:30 > 0:19:36learn from it. We have not had that happen to us before so now we will

0:19:36 > 0:19:40learn from this and feel better. As always with sprinting, tiny mistakes

0:19:40 > 0:19:48have a big effect but a tough bronze medal race against the Dutch. The

0:19:48 > 0:19:51Dutch qualified the quickest but had a poor second ride which meant they

0:19:51 > 0:19:56missed out on the gold medal race so it was a tough team to compete

0:19:56 > 0:20:02against. GB did get a personal best in the World Cup in Poland last

0:20:02 > 0:20:07week. It was a slight mistake and some technical imperfections and you

0:20:07 > 0:20:12will be in third or fourth place. It is a very young team and they have

0:20:12 > 0:20:16come through as the beating that they are really our best team at the

0:20:16 > 0:20:21moment with Jason Kenny still making his way back. Phil Hines as changed

0:20:21 > 0:20:27to become the second man and did a good time in qualifying but was

0:20:27 > 0:20:33taken out for the second and third ride. Ryan Owen is performing at the

0:20:33 > 0:20:38highest level, it is pushing an Jason and Calum Skinner and it will

0:20:38 > 0:20:42be interesting in Tokyo as to who they will pick for the team. What is

0:20:42 > 0:20:48Jason Kenny's schedule? He is back training and he is motivated and

0:20:48 > 0:20:53enjoying it. I haven't seen him this enthusiastically for a long time. I

0:20:53 > 0:20:57don't know if it is life in general he is enjoying it and working hard.

0:20:57 > 0:21:03We will see him race in January here and hopefully at the World

0:21:03 > 0:21:08Championships.Will he have a fight on his hands?Absolutely. There is

0:21:08 > 0:21:15no seat waiting, he will have do work hard to get back into the team,

0:21:15 > 0:21:17the standard is getting higher all the time but he is a special

0:21:17 > 0:21:23athlete. I have raced some amazing that over the years and he is among

0:21:23 > 0:21:27the best. It gets harder the older you get but he is still relatively

0:21:27 > 0:21:33young. He is not that old and he still has fire left in his legs.Six

0:21:33 > 0:21:39into three does not go right now but they will try and narrow that down

0:21:39 > 0:21:43to four?Yes, great to have lots of riders and competitions but the

0:21:43 > 0:21:46closer you get to the Olympic Games it can be tough if you are not sure

0:21:46 > 0:21:53of your place in the team, you have two training in the background

0:21:53 > 0:21:57because of problems and have a team four and you there'd worry about the

0:21:57 > 0:21:59selection because other nations tried that approach and it doesn't

0:21:59 > 0:22:05seem to work.They can lose confidence because they don't know

0:22:05 > 0:22:10if they are in out. More action to come but that is focus on the men's

0:22:10 > 0:22:12endurance starting with the scratch race.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16endurance starting with the scratch race. Chris Latham and a bronze

0:22:16 > 0:22:20medal at the last World Championships but how will he get on

0:22:20 > 0:22:33here? We join it in the closing stages. COMMENTATOR:

0:22:34 > 0:22:40They are trying to get on, and assign cocos off in front, Oliveira

0:22:40 > 0:22:44tries to get on his wheel, Stroetinga doesn't have the speed to

0:22:44 > 0:22:52stay with them all close the gap and he moves out of the way. Matthew

0:22:52 > 0:22:55Walls is also there in the red and white. The element row that will

0:22:55 > 0:23:02make it difficult for Latham, a bold move by these two and they will lap

0:23:02 > 0:23:06the remainder of the field any second now so they will get

0:23:06 > 0:23:12refreshed by the as they go past. And 12 laps to go, three colour

0:23:12 > 0:23:17matters remaining in this race, if they can make their way through the

0:23:17 > 0:23:29traffic then they are in a very strong position. We are watching the

0:23:29 > 0:23:37head of the race, they are caught in a trio of riders, the walls leading

0:23:37 > 0:23:42the chase as best as they can. They are getting caught up with everyone

0:23:42 > 0:23:47else at the moment. They chose not to go through the pack so all the

0:23:47 > 0:23:50attacking came to naught in the end because they are all in the wheels

0:23:50 > 0:23:56now. All of those riders are at one lap.He is attacking again and they

0:23:56 > 0:24:02are the riders who lead the way at the moment. They have broken away

0:24:02 > 0:24:05with once more, showing they are the class of the field in the scratch

0:24:05 > 0:24:12race, inside the last ten laps. Stroetinga puts it up once more,

0:24:12 > 0:24:18leading the chase is Ukraine. Matthew Walls, the other British

0:24:18 > 0:24:22rider, he is third on the track at the moment. Here are the front two,

0:24:22 > 0:24:28John mould from Wales and Stroetinga riding for Kazakhstan. They paused

0:24:28 > 0:24:33as long as they could in the main peloton, had a breather and then

0:24:33 > 0:24:39counter-attacked before they got back on terms, clever writing. They

0:24:39 > 0:24:44haven't got this wrapped up by any means but with less than two minutes

0:24:44 > 0:24:53to go now in this race.Re-raise -- Ruiz, a young rider from Argentina,

0:24:53 > 0:24:57that is a bit further back, the leading group coming through the

0:24:57 > 0:25:04finishing line any second now. There they go, Ruiz from Argentina joining

0:25:04 > 0:25:08the leading two. Those three are the front of the race. They are starting

0:25:08 > 0:25:12to skip terms and starting to think about the finishing sprint and they

0:25:12 > 0:25:17are not going to contest it if they are not careful. Five laps to go,

0:25:17 > 0:25:22the others can still get back on terms no problem at all. They need

0:25:22 > 0:25:30to commit to this move. Now, these are the riders are judged to be one

0:25:30 > 0:25:38lap up on everybody else in the field. A finish is very much inside

0:25:38 > 0:25:44now, there are the leading trio with Jonathan mould the back. They have

0:25:44 > 0:25:51decided to start waiting for this print for fourth position, -- the

0:25:51 > 0:25:58sprint. They are riding a decent pace, they are waiting for that

0:25:58 > 0:26:03sprint now.Mickey to Stroetinga of cover stun, we knew he had formed

0:26:03 > 0:26:14because -- Nick eater Oanasenko. John mould is in third place now,

0:26:14 > 0:26:19down the back straight they go with Oanasenko with a little bit of a gap

0:26:19 > 0:26:28into the straight. He takes the victory ahead of Ruiz. A photo for

0:26:28 > 0:26:34second place, it looked like Jonathan mould had the momentum and

0:26:34 > 0:26:44he does take second place.

0:26:51 > 0:26:55Jonathan mould acquitted himself superbly there. The way he wrote

0:26:55 > 0:27:02that race. Tactically excellent. But Panasenko had it and took it from

0:27:02 > 0:27:08the front and they could barely stay with him.Ruiz deserves credit for

0:27:08 > 0:27:12getting in the mix at the end of the race, a young rider from Argentina,

0:27:12 > 0:27:16he won the bronze medal in the world Junior Championships in the scratch

0:27:16 > 0:27:21race this year. That is one of the good things again about this stage

0:27:21 > 0:27:24of the Olympic cycle because these great talents come through and you

0:27:24 > 0:27:28get a glimpse of those who perhaps in three years may be competing for

0:27:28 > 0:27:31medals at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.I

0:27:31 > 0:27:34medals at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.I always hoped to get a medal

0:27:34 > 0:27:38before a World Cup but it is about getting in the right place at the

0:27:38 > 0:27:45right time, it can sometimes be a big bunch sprint which is not ideal

0:27:45 > 0:27:49to me, I wanted quite tough. Riding at the front, everyone else was

0:27:49 > 0:27:54quite keen to do that and it made it hard day.A great result for him,

0:27:54 > 0:27:59now to the women's scratch race, Emily Kay wearing British team

0:27:59 > 0:28:08colours and element Dickenson in red and white. The world champion from

0:28:08 > 0:28:13Italy Barbieri was the one to watch in this race. We join it with 11

0:28:13 > 0:28:14laps to go.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17in this race. We join it with 11 laps to go. COMMENTATOR: The rider

0:28:17 > 0:28:23from Hong Kong still leads the way, there is the right who has been

0:28:23 > 0:28:28thrown out,.We are not quite sure, we might be able to pick it up

0:28:28 > 0:28:36later.Yang still leads the way.

0:28:40 > 0:28:46Much focused on the front of the race.Yang is looking really tired

0:28:46 > 0:28:52and the gap is closing a little bit. Might be regretting it now, ten laps

0:28:52 > 0:28:57to go, suddenly that is an awful long way. It might be about two and

0:28:57 > 0:29:01a half minutes of racing but it would seem like a lifetime, she has

0:29:01 > 0:29:09given up the ghost now.The German 22 year the points race champion in

0:29:09 > 0:29:13the under 23 has closed the gap inside the last ten laps of this

0:29:13 > 0:29:17scratch race. A long way to go to the line and again Emily cake

0:29:17 > 0:29:28accelerates. And the world champion, Barbieri is there as well. Sykes is

0:29:28 > 0:29:33there, France have a rider up towards the front.

0:29:37 > 0:29:41A quarter of allow is the gap from the front of the race. There is

0:29:41 > 0:29:45element Dickenson in the middle with the union flag on her hat.

0:29:49 > 0:29:53They're starting to think about the sprint. These two may have been out

0:29:53 > 0:29:56a long time, but they're working together and plugging away and still

0:29:56 > 0:30:06got a third of a lap's lead. You can't play this game for long.Needs

0:30:06 > 0:30:16an acceleration quickly to come off the front. Emily Kay was there.

0:30:16 > 0:30:20Suzuki from Japan is there and Hayley Jones going to the front.

0:30:20 > 0:30:29Dickinson peels off. There is Hayley Jones with Emily Kay on her wheel.

0:30:29 > 0:30:34Dickinson still staying close to the front. She knows they have only just

0:30:34 > 0:30:38over a kilometre to go. They can mop these two up in the sprint, but it

0:30:38 > 0:30:44will be a close call unless they start the charge soon. The four laps

0:30:44 > 0:30:50look like a long way to go.Not when the peloton swing up like that. The

0:30:50 > 0:30:56lead can extend quickly. This is really going to be interesting.

0:30:56 > 0:31:04Three laps to go for the leading riders. Emily Kay has a look around.

0:31:04 > 0:31:09Kay makes sure she is in a good spot. Two and a half laps to go for

0:31:09 > 0:31:18the leading riders. Kay up alongside the leader. Dickinson riding for

0:31:18 > 0:31:22Team Breeze here.It is a good opportunity to go for a long one.

0:31:22 > 0:31:27She is not sprinting for the line. You're sprinting into the slip

0:31:27 > 0:31:33stream of the two lead riders. And you can go for a long sprint. Now,

0:31:33 > 0:31:40they're starting to wind it up as the leaders take the bell. Emily Kay

0:31:40 > 0:31:48leads the chase. D?Hoore is there. Now they're closing the gap and

0:31:48 > 0:31:52Barieri, the Italian, the world champion is right on her wheel and

0:31:52 > 0:31:58they haven't timed it right, or have they? It was so close on the line.

0:31:58 > 0:32:03Barieri with her arm in the air. D?Hoore in the sprint for line as

0:32:03 > 0:32:11well. What a sprint and what timing. Rachele Barieri raises her arms in

0:32:11 > 0:32:16celebration of a perfectly timed victory.Wait and see the photo

0:32:16 > 0:32:21finish. But what a thrilling fine. They can be dumb at first, the

0:32:21 > 0:32:28scratch -- dull at first the scratch races, but tonight it went right

0:32:28 > 0:32:33down to the line. I wasn't sure if they would make it. The last metres

0:32:33 > 0:32:40were so close. She did the rainbow jersey proud. But how close was it?

0:32:40 > 0:32:47I think it was exceedingly close. The rider from Hong Kong was leading

0:32:47 > 0:32:53right up until the final few centimetres.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55right up until the final few centimetres. All the racing we have

0:32:55 > 0:33:05seen has been fascinating and it has had involved not just physical

0:33:05 > 0:33:14strength, but strategy. And we saw that in the scratch race. We saw

0:33:14 > 0:33:19Yang escape with 18 laps to go. Normally that is a suicidal move,

0:33:19 > 0:33:26but the riders will know she is the Asian road champion and a great

0:33:26 > 0:33:31endurance rider. So if you gave her a decent gap, there is a chance he

0:33:31 > 0:33:36should keep it. With ten laps to go, it looked like she hadn't got enough

0:33:36 > 0:33:41of a lead. But Pale from German spotted the danger and suddenly

0:33:41 > 0:33:47there was a pair of them up the road. Once inside ten laps to go, it

0:33:47 > 0:33:55gets interesting, brink manship comes into play. There is only two

0:33:55 > 0:34:00after and half minutes left. So the field the ends to pause and that

0:34:00 > 0:34:05gives a breakaway an opportunity. The fact we had two riders in t lead

0:34:05 > 0:34:12meant this was a real threat and the world champion, Barieri, managed to

0:34:12 > 0:34:21catch them on the line more through luck than judgment. What a finish a

0:34:21 > 0:34:31great am analysis -- analysis. Now to the men's team. And Ed Clancy

0:34:31 > 0:34:36talks us through the team.So we have Steven Burke who will line up

0:34:36 > 0:34:42man one. He has been doing it for a long time like myself. He has won

0:34:42 > 0:34:48two Olympics, very experienced. Kian in man 2. He has a better start,

0:34:48 > 0:34:57better peak power than we have had. A v And man three is the old man, I

0:34:57 > 0:35:04have come off a road season. But whether we can tolerate the Kay

0:35:04 > 0:35:13dense well. Ollie Wood has potential. Got a loot of top end. He

0:35:13 > 0:35:21has fourth in the under-23 road race. Another one for the future.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25After qualifying fastest, Great Britain faced France in the first

0:35:25 > 0:35:30round. Team radioed from the start. We -- trailed from the start.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32round. Team radioed from the start. We -- trailed from the start.

0:35:32 > 0:35:37COMMENTATOR: Great Britain with a lot to do.Both teams are travelling

0:35:37 > 0:35:49faster than they were in qualification this morning.

0:35:51 > 0:35:57France wearing mainly white. Now France are down to a core of three.

0:35:57 > 0:36:01They're coming back quickly. It is two tenths of a second a lap. That

0:36:01 > 0:36:10is the momentum that they have got. They're holding out 0.4. Ian Dyer,

0:36:10 > 0:36:14the head coach of Britain, looking nervous. Some gaps forming in the

0:36:14 > 0:36:19British ranks too. Still half a second.Great Britain closing it

0:36:19 > 0:36:25now. Steven Burke peels off to the back of the line. Both teams down to

0:36:25 > 0:36:34three.Steven Burke has gone. It is half a second and Great Britain

0:36:34 > 0:36:39haven't a lot of time to do something about this. The French

0:36:39 > 0:36:44have taken it to them. They had a very fast start. The British team

0:36:44 > 0:36:53are looking better. There is big differences in form in that team.Ed

0:36:53 > 0:37:00c Clancy makes room.Three of a second nowt.Have they got a big

0:37:00 > 0:37:06final lap? It is almost level. Less than a 10th of a second. This is a

0:37:06 > 0:37:11dramatic race. Have Great Britain the legs to get into the medals? It

0:37:11 > 0:37:15is touch and go. We're about to find out as they cross the line and they

0:37:15 > 0:37:21have done it by 0.277 of a second. They left it late and they kept

0:37:21 > 0:37:25everyone on their the edge of their seats and right at the end of the

0:37:25 > 0:37:30race they pulled out a couple of very big laps to beat the French.

0:37:30 > 0:37:32race they pulled out a couple of very big laps to beat the French.

0:37:32 > 0:37:41Great to see Ed Clancy back.Yes, just to see him enjoying himself and

0:37:41 > 0:37:48the team are delighted to have him back. They could have a gold medal?

0:37:48 > 0:37:52Yes, it will be tight. As we saw against France, it is so competitive

0:37:52 > 0:37:56at the top now. They have got a very good chance. They have the

0:37:56 > 0:38:01experience. Steven Burke and Ed Clancy, I would put my money on

0:38:01 > 0:38:12them.Now Team KTF, a genuine amateur team.Yes, you don't see

0:38:12 > 0:38:17this so much these days. You would see it 20 or 30 years ago. Now every

0:38:17 > 0:38:22team has full support and everything is faken care of them. Four guys

0:38:22 > 0:38:31have set the team up themselves and done it on their way. They have

0:38:31 > 0:38:35taken it from club level to World Cup level. To make it through to the

0:38:35 > 0:38:39last four in a World Cup against a truly world class field is a

0:38:39 > 0:38:46fantastic story. It must make you feel nostalgic, it is the way

0:38:46 > 0:38:50cycling used to be.Yes and even the neutrals get behind them. The way

0:38:50 > 0:38:54they have approached the events. They haven't followed the same as

0:38:54 > 0:38:57everyone else, they have thought about it and played to their

0:38:57 > 0:39:03strengths. They have a kilometre specialist and they think, use him

0:39:03 > 0:39:09for the first few laps.That was amazing, five laps.Yes, we don't

0:39:09 > 0:39:17see that. And you will see others watching them. You want to see the

0:39:17 > 0:39:21medal races live, you can on red button. We will bring you best of

0:39:21 > 0:39:29the action tomorrow afternoon from 4. 30. This maybe a post-Olympic

0:39:29 > 0:39:38lull, but try telling that to Katie Archibald. She won the omnium world

0:39:38 > 0:39:44title and has retained her London six day title and here she is not

0:39:44 > 0:39:52taking it easy. You ask Katy, she wouldn't have it any other way.I

0:39:52 > 0:39:59love to race, I hate to train. It is a bit of a cheat, but it seems

0:39:59 > 0:40:04absurd that I know this what is I want to do, but my heart still makes

0:40:04 > 0:40:11me want to run away a lot of the time. I still chuck myself into it.

0:40:11 > 0:40:17I will pass the point of a couple of month racing block and this is maybe

0:40:17 > 0:40:21the most important in that block if I was to judge it off the nerve

0:40:21 > 0:40:27level, it seems like a big deal. We have had the European Championships,

0:40:27 > 0:40:32that was a big deal, because it is about defending a title. But a race

0:40:32 > 0:40:39like this depends on who turns up. But it could be, well, it is an

0:40:39 > 0:40:43international field, we are not just dealing with one continent but five.

0:40:43 > 0:40:49Yes, it is as competitive as it can be.There no doubting Katy's passion

0:40:49 > 0:40:56for racing and with the omnium, she gets four races in one day. The

0:40:56 > 0:40:59format is the same, but a lot of people are not sure about it.Yes it

0:40:59 > 0:41:03has changed a lot in the last 10 years. I haven't met many riders who

0:41:03 > 0:41:09like it. I'm not a big fan of the tempo race. It is weighted towards

0:41:09 > 0:41:15the points race, why not have a points race. Or have a full bredth

0:41:15 > 0:41:21of events. So it is maybe it takes time to become used to it. At the

0:41:21 > 0:41:27moment, I think it is still, it is up in the air.The riders can only

0:41:27 > 0:41:34deal with what they have in front of them. Here is now the omnium works.

0:41:34 > 0:41:40In a bid to make more spectator friendly racing, they introduced a

0:41:40 > 0:41:46raft of changes and no event was affected more than the omnium. One

0:41:46 > 0:41:55final sprint to see whoo will win. Since the introduction, the event

0:41:55 > 0:42:01has undergone almost annual tinkering. In Rio it spanned two

0:42:01 > 0:42:06days and had six events. Now it will be four in a single day. The most

0:42:06 > 0:42:11radical day is the removal of all time disciplines. Gone are the

0:42:11 > 0:42:19pursuit, flying lap and in comes the tempo race. Before the final points

0:42:19 > 0:42:26race show down. What is a tempo race? Well, in my day, when I was

0:42:26 > 0:42:32young, it was a race of prizes, a filler event where the kids would

0:42:32 > 0:42:37sprint for a pound a lap. Now it is the same ingredients as a point

0:42:37 > 0:42:41race, but mixed in a different way. From sixth lap the riders sprint for

0:42:41 > 0:42:46points every time they pass over the line. Well, I say points, one point,

0:42:46 > 0:42:52the first rider scores, everybody else gets nothing. And sprints every

0:42:52 > 0:42:5818 seconds, making it a test of endurance. But it is short. 10

0:42:58 > 0:43:03kilometres for men and 7 and a half for women. Why they can't do the

0:43:03 > 0:43:08same distance is beyond me. The last discipline is the points race. The

0:43:08 > 0:43:12final sprint is now worth double points. The aim being to keep the

0:43:12 > 0:43:15race competitive. As before the winner is the ride we are the most

0:43:15 > 0:43:23points after all four events. Big changes. Will they work? Well it is

0:43:23 > 0:43:27about making more spectator-friendly racing, so you can be the judge. The

0:43:27 > 0:43:39first event was the 7.5K scratch race. Have a Len Valente took an

0:43:39 > 0:43:46early lead. Archibald finished fourth. The second event was the

0:43:46 > 0:43:50tempo race. Where a point is awarded to the winner of the sprint on every

0:43:50 > 0:43:58lap. Chinese's Wang won the final point and Valente took the race with

0:43:58 > 0:44:08Archibald second. Valente stayed on top, six points clear of Didriksen.

0:44:08 > 0:44:17Katy Archibald is in third. We join the elimination race with seven

0:44:17 > 0:44:18riders left, including the world

0:44:18 > 0:44:24riders left, including the world champion. COMMENTATOR: Valente leads

0:44:24 > 0:44:32and the Lithuanian is second. Didriksen on the wheel of Archibald

0:44:32 > 0:44:44and Archibald may have to have a sprint in her legs.Didriksen's

0:44:44 > 0:44:50playing a dangerous game.Didriksen looked as if she was in a spot of

0:44:50 > 0:44:55bother.Archibald is on a good wheel and getting a bit of shelter. But

0:44:55 > 0:45:06knows that they will try and hold her on the shoulder.

0:45:06 > 0:45:10Kessler looks a little bit designed to coming over last in this

0:45:10 > 0:45:14particular group, she hasn't got a lot left in the tank at this moment

0:45:14 > 0:45:18in time. The world champion comes across first but it is more

0:45:18 > 0:45:23importantly about who is last at this particular moment. And it was

0:45:23 > 0:45:28Kessler from the Netherlands.Katie Archibald looks as if she is working

0:45:28 > 0:45:31hard but comfortable with the front position, she has control of this

0:45:31 > 0:45:37now. Paying a physical price for it, Amalie Dideriksen has been dodging

0:45:37 > 0:45:45it all the way through and is getting used to it now.The

0:45:45 > 0:45:50Lithuanian rider is just 19 years of age and has done really well to be

0:45:50 > 0:45:58with these riders on the track now and just goes out.Nobody wants to

0:45:58 > 0:46:02be on the front now, it has been a tough race to this point, just four

0:46:02 > 0:46:07riders left and they are all the quality riders in the field. It has

0:46:07 > 0:46:17gone to form, Valente, Archibald, Amalie Dideriksen and Elisa Balsamo,

0:46:17 > 0:46:24that was only last year, Valente leads it out, Amalie Dideriksen on

0:46:24 > 0:46:31the inside, it may be Elisa Balsamo who will struggle to stay in, and

0:46:31 > 0:46:37indeed it is.Amalie Dideriksen had the skill rather than the pace there

0:46:37 > 0:46:42and Elisa Balsamo couldn't raise her pace that time, riding valiantly, a

0:46:42 > 0:46:493-way sprint, who will take it on? Katie Archibald. She shows her face

0:46:49 > 0:46:57at the front. They take the Bell, Amalie Dideriksen right on her wheel

0:46:57 > 0:47:01which has happened a lot in this race, she has followed Archibald a

0:47:01 > 0:47:11lot, Valente has work to do.Family ties how she sprinted, Amalie

0:47:11 > 0:47:17Dideriksen is the one in trouble. And she is the one who is out and it

0:47:17 > 0:47:25is Katie Archibald against Jennifer Valente. She needs to dent Valente's

0:47:25 > 0:47:29lead a little bit because she is the overall leader going into this.

0:47:29 > 0:47:34Katie Archibald going for a long run and Valente is going to let her have

0:47:34 > 0:47:39it as well, a superb ride to get the home crowd going from the world

0:47:39 > 0:47:46champion and Katie Archibald knows she will win this elimination race.

0:47:46 > 0:47:51To rapturous applause, an excellent ride from Katie Archibald, maximum

0:47:51 > 0:47:55points for her, Jennifer Valente rolling over the line safe in second

0:47:55 > 0:48:03place, just saving her legs for the final event, the points race.

0:48:03 > 0:48:08place, just saving her legs for the final event, the points race.

0:48:08 > 0:48:13Valente's lead remains six points going into the points race. Amalie

0:48:13 > 0:48:16Dideriksen in third, she will have her sights set on making up the gap

0:48:16 > 0:48:21with just the final points race to come. The final event of the women's

0:48:21 > 0:48:24omnium saw all three medals still up for grabs

0:48:24 > 0:48:25omnium saw all three medals still up for grabs and we join Simon and

0:48:25 > 0:48:30Chris for the closing stages. COMMENTATOR: The leaders under

0:48:30 > 0:48:32pressure, Katie Archibald knows they are under pressure and she puts the

0:48:32 > 0:48:39hammer down. She will close the gap and Archibald needs to be careful,

0:48:39 > 0:48:43two laps to go until the sprint. Valente on the other end of the

0:48:43 > 0:48:47group, that is what she needs, if she can get some daylight between

0:48:47 > 0:48:53the two of them then she has a chance of taking gold. One on one

0:48:53 > 0:49:00she will struggle. And anxious moment for Valente, the American

0:49:00 > 0:49:06rider but now she closes the gap. Valente has some chasing to do here.

0:49:06 > 0:49:09Katie Archibald moving around the outside, has she got the legs to

0:49:09 > 0:49:13take this spread, she may well have, she will be pressed all the way,

0:49:13 > 0:49:17Archibald in the sprint for the line, she needs these five points

0:49:17 > 0:49:23and she is denied. What a shame, Boyland is not involved in this com

0:49:23 > 0:49:32petition at all, I am fairly certain Archibald remains one point in

0:49:32 > 0:49:37arrears with one sprint to go.This could hardly be closer but Lydia

0:49:37 > 0:49:40Boyland who took the five points not involved in the top of the

0:49:40 > 0:49:48leaderboard, she is 14 but she refused to desist. We have seen both

0:49:48 > 0:49:50of these riders, Valente and Archibald winning sprints from each

0:49:50 > 0:49:55other, then par knows if she leads out she has a chance. It is going to

0:49:55 > 0:50:00come down to this final sprint, whoever wins will take this World

0:50:00 > 0:50:06Cup victory.You couldn't hope for more from a winner takes all final

0:50:06 > 0:50:11sprint for the line. This is the culmination of four events

0:50:11 > 0:50:18throughout the day and it will come down to this, seven laps away from a

0:50:18 > 0:50:22royal sprint for World Cup gold.It doesn't matter what position they

0:50:22 > 0:50:26finish, if they both score points, whoever takes it will take the gold

0:50:26 > 0:50:33medal. And Valente is on the wheel at the moment, that has not worked

0:50:33 > 0:50:44for her up until now.Boyland going to the front. They lead the chase.

0:50:44 > 0:50:50This is good for Archibald, if she can score the final point, it is

0:50:50 > 0:50:53going to be close. The attacks will come thick and fast because it is

0:50:53 > 0:51:00the final sprint. She doesn't need a full point, she just needs to finish

0:51:00 > 0:51:06in front of Valente and score. Archibald is third in line but again

0:51:06 > 0:51:09she is dragging everyone round for the moment, she just eases off a

0:51:09 > 0:51:21little, Lottie Kabashi Keith on the inside, -- Lato ca pesky. A little

0:51:21 > 0:51:25gap that needs closing by Archibald, only three and a half laps away from

0:51:25 > 0:51:30the sprint for the line, she can't afford to let these riders get away.

0:51:30 > 0:51:35Katie Archibald needs to score here. She is closing the cushy desperately

0:51:35 > 0:51:41wants the points, Valente is on the wheel getting sucked around for the

0:51:41 > 0:51:47final, tactically it is not ideal but Archibald has the heart. The

0:51:47 > 0:51:50German has gone catapulting off the front of the peloton, going round

0:51:50 > 0:51:54the bottom of the track in first place. Boyland will not close the

0:51:54 > 0:52:03gap. They are not responding at the moment now but Katie Archibald

0:52:03 > 0:52:08starts to move forward on the outside, Valente is glued to her

0:52:08 > 0:52:18wheel.That could be the mistake here. All eyes are further back,

0:52:18 > 0:52:22Valente goes past Katie Archibald and I don't think Archibald has

0:52:22 > 0:52:30anything left, she hasn't, Scott takes it, Valente in third and right

0:52:30 > 0:52:34at the end, Katie Archibald just didn't have that final sprint in her

0:52:34 > 0:52:43legs. But she kept the crowd on the edge of their seats throughout that

0:52:43 > 0:52:47final race and Jennifer Valente will be smiling with joy but smiling with

0:52:47 > 0:52:53relief as well because she was pushed to the limit by the world

0:52:53 > 0:52:59champion and it went to the wire. There is confirmation of the final

0:52:59 > 0:53:07standings in the women's omnium, just four events these days.

0:53:10 > 0:53:16Katie Archibald needed -- Valente needed a big the end to do it.

0:53:16 > 0:53:17Katie Archibald needed -- Valente needed a big the end to do it.You

0:53:17 > 0:53:20look about your mistakes, appoint hair and point there, we have a

0:53:20 > 0:53:28similar riding style, we matched and I was on the back foot, I just

0:53:28 > 0:53:31wasn't hitting those five points, you needed the five to get the gap

0:53:31 > 0:53:38from five to three. Now it is back to the drawing board a bit but I

0:53:38 > 0:53:44feel oddly content because it was a good race. You have won plenty this

0:53:44 > 0:53:49year but looking at the new format, four races in one day, it looked

0:53:49 > 0:53:56torturous, how is the body?It is pretty sore. It is double points on

0:53:56 > 0:54:01the last sprint, it is amazing how terrible they going round, I can

0:54:01 > 0:54:05properly into the tank more than an well thinking I would get the last

0:54:05 > 0:54:09sprint and normally I am right in thinking that but today, it wasn't,

0:54:09 > 0:54:15it is not that I am not going well but the level was really high today.

0:54:15 > 0:54:21Katie Archibald winning the points race but not able to overhaul in

0:54:21 > 0:54:25terms of total points. Chris Boardman joining us, how do you read

0:54:25 > 0:54:31that performance and what does she still have to improve on?She is so

0:54:31 > 0:54:35close but she sets her standard so high, as world champion will stop

0:54:35 > 0:54:42she rides with heart and gets stuck in and the pace, there is

0:54:42 > 0:54:47technically -- tactically room for improvement, Jennifer Valente always

0:54:47 > 0:54:56good tactically, for Katie it is not so natural. Valente decided not to

0:54:56 > 0:55:00go for the penultimate sprint, the final one was double points, and

0:55:00 > 0:55:04that is the kind of decision-making under pressure she needs to learn.

0:55:04 > 0:55:09We said how much she loves racing, we will see her tonight on the red

0:55:09 > 0:55:13button in the women's Madison with Eleanor Barker and that is a great

0:55:13 > 0:55:19event.Another good chance for a medal and they are no longer the

0:55:19 > 0:55:24up-and-coming champions, they are the champions now, it Katie is the

0:55:24 > 0:55:27one to beat and that is why it is tough for her in the omnium,

0:55:27 > 0:55:32everybody looking to her to initiate the moves and chasing her down, she

0:55:32 > 0:55:36clearly has the legs and Eleanor as well, is a fantastic rider and they

0:55:36 > 0:55:40have a really good chance. Is that your highlight of the evening

0:55:40 > 0:55:49action?Katie Archibald is riding everything. The Madison, you can

0:55:49 > 0:55:52guarantee that it will be enthralling, hard to commentate on

0:55:52 > 0:55:58and keep track of what is going on. Chris you will be given an eye on

0:55:58 > 0:56:03this prince.Yes, it is incredibly close, I watched the World Cup last

0:56:03 > 0:56:07week in Poland and it was very exciting, Phil Hines will be riding

0:56:07 > 0:56:13for Great Britain. It is anybody's guess what will happen, the new

0:56:13 > 0:56:17rules in the longer race, the three lap sprint, it is so exciting. It

0:56:17 > 0:56:22will be tough for Great Britain to get a medal but for everyone

0:56:22 > 0:56:27watching at home it will be very exciting.Do you think Jason and

0:56:27 > 0:56:34Laura Kinney at home watching all of this.It can be good for you, I have

0:56:34 > 0:56:37been in similar situations when you move towards retirement, when it is

0:56:37 > 0:56:42taken away from you and your circumstances change, it is nice for

0:56:42 > 0:56:45a couple of weeks and then you think you missed that and that is what you

0:56:45 > 0:56:49need to get back into it. Watching other people doing it and realising

0:56:49 > 0:56:55you are not part of it and sometimes you are OK with that and it is time

0:56:55 > 0:57:00to move on.We talked about the post-Olympic dip, but the chance for

0:57:00 > 0:57:05new Riders to come through, I think Katie Archibald in the last year has

0:57:05 > 0:57:10taken that on saying it is her time and the knowledge that Jason and

0:57:10 > 0:57:15Laura both coming back and they will have to fight for it, British

0:57:15 > 0:57:18cycling may be in the headlines for the wrong reasons but in terms of

0:57:18 > 0:57:24talent it is in the good place. We have the makings of a fantastic

0:57:24 > 0:57:30squad, it is about how we use the competition within the team in a

0:57:30 > 0:57:32positive way, if we can do that, other nations will be quaking in

0:57:32 > 0:57:39their boots Tokyo in 2020.If you want more cycling we will be back at

0:57:39 > 0:57:443p the red button.
