:00:10. > :00:17.Welcome back on BBC Two two coverage of the Road World Championships. And
:00:18. > :00:23.elite selection coming through, Lizzie Armitstead in the mix, trying
:00:24. > :00:31.to add the rainbow jersey to her Commonwealth title. She is coming
:00:32. > :00:34.by. There she is. Hoping to add the rainbow jersey to her Commonwealth
:00:35. > :00:38.title. Let's join our commentary team.
:00:39. > :00:48.Welcome back. This is the big selection for the final lap of the
:00:49. > :00:56.race. The lead group, including Rossella Ratto and Lizzie Armitstead
:00:57. > :01:05.and Emma Johansson and Marianne Vos, the defending world champion.
:01:06. > :01:17.Lisa Brennauer is in there. As is Ellen van Dijk, another Dutch rider.
:01:18. > :01:26.It is in there. As is Pauline Ferrand Prevot from France. 18
:01:27. > :01:31.riders in the leading group. The Japanese rider leading the chase
:01:32. > :01:36.group, 20 seconds back, but presumably that is the selection,
:01:37. > :01:42.one of those 18 will become the world champion. We would think so.
:01:43. > :01:48.The Dutch rider on the front, driving the pace. Five have broken
:01:49. > :01:53.away from the other riders. Lizzie Armistead has to do the work, nobody
:01:54. > :02:02.else will do it. Representatives from Italy, Germany and the
:02:03. > :02:07.Netherlands, and Poland perhaps. Yes, the Polish rider coming
:02:08. > :02:11.through. The pressure is on the British rider, Lizzie Armitstead,
:02:12. > :02:20.none of the other teams will help her, because they have team-mates in
:02:21. > :02:24.it. The Polish rider in there. She may choose to wait for the climb and
:02:25. > :02:34.try to go on the climb. This is a handy rate from those five. Lizzie
:02:35. > :02:39.Armistead has to do something. A first-year professional, she will be
:02:40. > :02:49.no stranger to the likes of Marianne Vos. Chantelle Black from the
:02:50. > :02:51.Netherlands, number two. Is was a Lovato in there as well? Yes, at the
:02:52. > :03:10.front. Who is the other rider at the
:03:11. > :03:18.front? It could be the German. It is one of the riders from Germany. Yes,
:03:19. > :03:26.it is. The United States have missed this move. The only saving grace
:03:27. > :03:33.from Lizzie Armistead, the American riders will want to try to bring
:03:34. > :03:40.this back. The Netherlands, Poland, Australia, Italy and Germany
:03:41. > :03:46.represented in this leading group, the early stages of the final lap at
:03:47. > :03:53.the women's elite road race. Thankfully, it is staying dry on
:03:54. > :03:56.most of the course, it will be interesting when they get to the
:03:57. > :04:02.halfway point, because on the last lap it was pouring down. The German
:04:03. > :04:08.rider piles it on at the front at the moment. She fancies her
:04:09. > :04:10.chances, she is doing a bit of the work. The Germans have had a very
:04:11. > :04:27.good race to this point. There is a reminder of the leading
:04:28. > :04:31.group. Rossella Ratto, a medallist last year, getting involved in the
:04:32. > :04:36.thick of it again. Her form is good, she finished fourth in the
:04:37. > :04:42.World Cup recently, and she won the bronze medal last year in Florence.
:04:43. > :04:45.Just 20 years of age, once more at the front in the World
:04:46. > :04:50.Championships, as they had up towards the castle for the last
:04:51. > :04:54.time. A lot of people say this course is similar to last year, so
:04:55. > :05:03.it could go in her failure -- in her favour.
:05:04. > :05:11.Not much of a gap. Here come the Balaton. It was the Americans but in
:05:12. > :05:15.the pressure on to bring it back. They could not afford to let it go,
:05:16. > :05:21.because they have options, including Evelyn Stevens. They have got
:05:22. > :05:27.themselves in a good position, so to let this go now would have thrown
:05:28. > :05:33.everything out of the window. The Colombian just dropping off the
:05:34. > :05:39.back, as they begin the climb, five kilometres, but Hill virtually all
:05:40. > :05:43.the way. The pressure is on. How is Lizzie Armistead feeling? It is
:05:44. > :05:47.going in her favour, and she has to be vigilant, she cannot afford to
:05:48. > :05:53.let any group go off the front again. The Italians are setting the
:05:54. > :06:00.pace, even though they have Rossella Ratto at the front. We saw Giorgia
:06:01. > :06:01.Bronzini get back in there. Eliza Long Gopal Gini is towards the front
:06:02. > :06:23.as well. There is Evelyn Stevens, number 22,
:06:24. > :06:29.for the right of states. -- the United States. Sanchez, the
:06:30. > :06:40.Spaniard, is there in the red and yellow.
:06:41. > :06:52.A bit of respite. The group are preparing to tackle the main part of
:06:53. > :06:57.the climb. Number 79, the New Zealander, towards the back of the
:06:58. > :07:04.group. Lizzie Armistead on the left-hand side of your picture,
:07:05. > :07:11.towards the front. The Germans at the front, having a discussion. The
:07:12. > :07:19.tension is ratcheting up on the final lap. It is all to play for in
:07:20. > :07:24.the race for the gold medal. Lizzie Armistead is right in the middle of
:07:25. > :07:32.the picture. What a scrap it is going to be on the final climb if it
:07:33. > :07:39.stays like this. The German at the front. Lizzie Armistead has had a
:07:40. > :07:45.great position for the whole race. She did not panic when the breakaway
:07:46. > :07:51.went away. The United the job for her, inadvertently, winding her back
:07:52. > :08:00.into it. Preserving their own chances of winning. Had an American
:08:01. > :08:05.writer gone into that move, it would have all been on Lizzie's shoulders
:08:06. > :08:08.to bring it back. But it played into her hands, and she did not panic,
:08:09. > :08:14.she sat back and waited for the others to do the work. Is that the
:08:15. > :08:21.Ukrainian at the front? The silver medallist the other day. One of two
:08:22. > :08:28.Ukrainian riders in this race. She was up towards the front. A thicket
:08:29. > :08:36.of riders filling the road. The French move to the front, including
:08:37. > :08:41.Pauline Ferrand Prevot. Only two of them there, but they are very strong
:08:42. > :08:46.riders. Pauline Ferrand Prevot has had a breakthrough season. Her
:08:47. > :08:55.victory gave her a lot of confidence. There is Giorgia
:08:56. > :08:58.Bronzini. A bit of a discussion, I am not sure what is going on, if
:08:59. > :09:11.Giorgia Bronzini needs assistance. The Dutch are well represented,
:09:12. > :09:18.Ellen van Dijk in front of the camera, the very tall figure. We
:09:19. > :09:25.caught the moment, the Italians are down to three. The defending
:09:26. > :09:32.champion is still in the mix, Marianne Vos, with the number one on
:09:33. > :09:35.her back. It is very cagey on the road at the moment. Inside the final
:09:36. > :09:51.13 kilometres of the race. France taking up the pace. Pauline
:09:52. > :10:02.Ferrand Prevot if the fancied rider for them. And now a move coming up
:10:03. > :10:06.the gutter on the left-hand side. It looks like it could be the German.
:10:07. > :10:12.Trying to set things up for Lichtenberg. Such an experienced
:10:13. > :10:16.rider. She has been there at the business end more than once before,
:10:17. > :10:21.she finished fifth in a feud years ago. This will hurt the legs of a
:10:22. > :10:27.lot of riders. The Frenchwoman going backwards in the bunch. She did that
:10:28. > :10:31.move to close the gap for Pauline Ferrand Prevot. One of the big
:10:32. > :10:43.favourites for the day, along with Lizzie Armistead and Marianne Vos.
:10:44. > :10:50.Still, we await the big moment of the race. The way the Germans have
:10:51. > :10:53.ridden would give Lichtenberg a lot of confidence, because they have
:10:54. > :10:56.done a fantastic job to get her to this point. Lisa Brennauer is still
:10:57. > :11:12.there. Evelyn Stevens makes a move, we
:11:13. > :11:22.thought she would get involved. It is a good move. They know the
:11:23. > :11:38.danger. She has come into these Championships in really good form.
:11:39. > :11:44.She was one of the riders that backed up Italy with Germany, 16
:11:45. > :11:46.She was one of the riders that days of racing in total, and she
:11:47. > :11:51.She was one of the riders that that, so a very impressive season.
:11:52. > :11:55.She finished fifth in the World Championship last year, can she go a
:11:56. > :12:02.bit better this time and get onto the podium? She is trying to thin it
:12:03. > :12:09.out. Lizzie Armitstead in third place, behind Marianne Vos, and
:12:10. > :12:12.behind her is Elisa Longo Borghini, and behind her... We lost the
:12:13. > :12:19.picture. Was it one of the Australians? Yes, but Marianne Vos
:12:20. > :12:24.took the chase up. Yes, she had to close the gap, that would have been
:12:25. > :12:28.perfect for Lizzie Armitstead. It gives you confidence when you see
:12:29. > :12:32.Marianne Vos having to work. Emma Johansson is still in there, and
:12:33. > :12:40.Pauline Ferrand Prevot just behind her. Rossella Ratto and Giorgia
:12:41. > :12:47.Bronzini still hanging on. It is nerve jangling stuff. Lizzie
:12:48. > :12:51.Armitstead having a look around. Marianne Vos sticking on her wheel.
:12:52. > :13:04.Evelyn Stevens has not been able to gain any ground. But she has put the
:13:05. > :13:13.effort in. Marianne Vos, number one. The Japanese is still in there. It
:13:14. > :13:17.is splitting up. The riders upfront are playing cat and mouse, and the
:13:18. > :13:24.group that they chopped on the other part of the climb is starting to get
:13:25. > :13:28.together, so they will have a cute team-mates to come up, it could
:13:29. > :13:32.change things. The road looks as if it has dried out a bit from a lap
:13:33. > :13:38.ago. Let's hope that the rain is staying away. Lizzie Armitstead is
:13:39. > :13:45.third in line. She has been so well positioned all day, extremely
:13:46. > :13:51.patient, incredible. What a fantastic finish we have got lined
:13:52. > :13:55.up in this race. There are two more riders for the Netherlands coming
:13:56. > :14:06.up. That is a big group, and we will have an attack. Germany going on the
:14:07. > :14:12.attack. Just trying to disrupt everybody else's rhythm. The Dutch
:14:13. > :14:20.trying to close it down right away. It might be Marianne Vos. It looks
:14:21. > :14:28.like it could be Blaak. Yes, I think so. Lizzie Armitstead is there.
:14:29. > :14:36.Where is Marianne Vos? A bit of a split. Lizzie Armitstead should take
:14:37. > :14:41.advantage. There could be an opportunity in the offing in the not
:14:42. > :14:46.too distant future. It is starting to come back together again. We are
:14:47. > :14:55.looking for Lizzie Armitstead at the front of the race. The Dutch rider
:14:56. > :15:06.on her wheel, and I am sure it is Blaak. Marianne Vos is further back.
:15:07. > :15:13.She is with Pauline Ferrand Prevot. We should not count out Blaak. But
:15:14. > :15:17.more importantly, she won the World Cup race in Sweden last month. The
:15:18. > :15:27.way that Lizzie on the 20 on her wheel straight away... They will be
:15:28. > :15:32.team-mates next year. There is Giorgia Bronzini in the blue. Number
:15:33. > :15:36.53, towards the back of the group, Pauline Ferrand Prevot of France.
:15:37. > :15:43.Bringing up the rear at the moment if the German. Ellen van Dijk the
:15:44. > :15:56.bottom of your picture for the Dutch, the world time trial champion
:15:57. > :16:01.last year, trying to hang in there. And attack goes, is that Ellen van
:16:02. > :16:10.Dijk? It looks like it, that is a good move. The Australian response
:16:11. > :16:15.to that, she is having a really good ride. She has put some work in on
:16:16. > :16:47.this final lap, the German. The Polish rider rides for rubber
:16:48. > :16:59.bank, alongside Marianne Vos. There might be to publish riders left in
:17:00. > :17:01.the telethon. A bit further back, the Polish rider is towards the back
:17:02. > :17:12.of the group. The pressure ratchets up again.
:17:13. > :17:21.Another group here being driven along by Italy, and Germany are keen
:17:22. > :17:29.to get back involved. Blaak for the Dutch, Lizzie Armitstead not far
:17:30. > :17:36.away, sixth in line. Lichtenberg at the front, with Elisa Longo Borghini
:17:37. > :17:50.rolling through. The Frenchwoman has found a second wind. Still riding
:17:51. > :17:56.up. The roads are still treacherous. The rain shower seems to have
:17:57. > :18:00.passed. Who is going to strike first, and how far out will it be?
:18:01. > :18:09.Who fancies their chances? Who has got the confidence?
:18:10. > :18:22.Lizzie Armitstead staying up towards the front. Is this Blaak?
:18:23. > :18:32.Strung out towards the top of the first of the two climbs. It is still
:18:33. > :18:37.all to play for in the women's world road race championship. Marianne
:18:38. > :18:41.Vos, first or second in every year since 2006, will she keep that
:18:42. > :18:45.going? Will she be the winner for the third year in a row and for the
:18:46. > :18:49.fourth time ever, or can Lizzie Armitstead win for Great Britain?
:18:50. > :18:53.Lizzie Armitstead has been one of the strongest riders this year, and
:18:54. > :18:59.some of the team directors were attacking him as the strongest. She
:19:00. > :19:08.has come into great form, and she has been superb in every race she
:19:09. > :19:12.has targeted this year. On a similar course to this, she was very
:19:13. > :19:17.comfortable, a bit outnumbered, with the same team taking first, second
:19:18. > :19:41.and third, but she looks comfortable.
:19:42. > :19:48.A lot of names still in the hunt for the gold medal. All of the big names
:19:49. > :19:52.are here, it is a hard race to pick, but you could not go past
:19:53. > :20:04.Marianne Vos on the descent in the wet. It is still tricky. Thankfully,
:20:05. > :20:07.it looks as if everybody has made it round. It has been an awkward
:20:08. > :20:14.right-hander in the other races, never mind in greasy conditions such
:20:15. > :20:17.as these. It is still dry here at the finish. They might be leading
:20:18. > :20:24.the worst of the weather behind them, let's hope so. There was a
:20:25. > :20:29.question surrounding them, let's hope so. There was a
:20:30. > :20:31.team's strength after they lost a rider in the team time trial, but
:20:32. > :20:40.they have the playing out well for Marianne Vos.
:20:41. > :20:44.She has got team-mates with her, Lizzie Armitstead relying on
:20:45. > :20:51.everybody else playing off against each other, plus her own vigilance,
:20:52. > :20:58.of course. We only have one client to go, the one kilometre climb. It
:20:59. > :21:05.is quite steep at the beginning, steep towards the top, 10%. In third
:21:06. > :21:14.place is Lizzie Armitstead. Is that Marianne Vos on her wheel?
:21:15. > :21:21.The American has been on the wheels all day, positioning herself well,
:21:22. > :21:26.putting in the hard work when she needs to, but it is impressive to
:21:27. > :21:29.get that far, and if it comes to a sprint, she would be one of the few
:21:30. > :21:31.that could match up with the likes of Marianne Vos and Giorgia
:21:32. > :21:38.Bronzini. So much about of Marianne Vos and Giorgia
:21:39. > :21:44.struggling, but she is there when it matters, as always. It is an honour
:21:45. > :21:49.for Lizzie Armitstead if Marianne Vos is choosing to follow her,
:21:50. > :21:54.because she has become one of the strongest riders, very consistent.
:21:55. > :21:59.What a year she has had, the Commonwealth Games champion in the
:22:00. > :22:07.road race, he World Cup champion for 2014, Lizzie Ahmed, and now in the
:22:08. > :22:10.mix. Giorgia Bronzini in the middle of the picture, that will not be a
:22:11. > :22:17.good sign for everybody else, the sign that she is still there, occurs
:22:18. > :22:20.she is such a rapid finisher, she is going for a hat-trick of world
:22:21. > :22:29.titles. Lizzie Armitstead realises she needs to go. Italy still with
:22:30. > :22:36.three players. Lizzie Armitstead policing everything. This descent
:22:37. > :22:41.will play a big part in the finish. The most confident descenders. Who
:22:42. > :22:47.is going to go for it? Surely somebody will try to get a gap, and
:22:48. > :22:54.they can try hard to hang onto it. Will it be a German rider? Marianne
:22:55. > :23:03.Vos and Lizzie Armitstead look comfortable. They are swapping
:23:04. > :23:08.order. Evelyn Stevens goes again. She knows this is where she has two
:23:09. > :23:13.make her mark, to gain ground on the others. There are too many for her
:23:14. > :23:18.liking. Marianne Vos looks comfortable in second place, but
:23:19. > :23:22.Lizzie Armitstead also looks good. Italy well represented towards the
:23:23. > :23:34.front. Wrotham Loretto and Elisa Longo Borghini. Here goes the move.
:23:35. > :23:42.That is Emma Johansson. The first time we have seen her at the front.
:23:43. > :23:47.She is dishing it out to the others, you can see how they are gritting
:23:48. > :23:50.their teeth to stay with her, that Marianne Vos and Lizzie Armitstead
:23:51. > :24:01.are the first to respond. Pauline Ferrand Prevot is there as well for
:24:02. > :24:05.France. This is the moment. Lizzie Armitstead stretches her legs on the
:24:06. > :24:12.front, she shows her face, this is where she is making a move. She
:24:13. > :24:17.cannot get away. She is heavily marked by Marianne Vos. If Marianne
:24:18. > :24:22.Vos hangs on, she will be difficult to beat in the sprint. Elisa Longo
:24:23. > :24:33.Borghini and Emma Johansson are there. Pauline Ferrand Prevot trying
:24:34. > :24:39.to come across, with Rossella Ratto. Giorgia Bronzini is a bit further
:24:40. > :24:48.back. Will these four have enough to stay away and contest the finish?
:24:49. > :24:53.You would think all of these riders and Elisa Longo Borghini are going
:24:54. > :24:58.to keep the pace high, because they do not want them to come back.
:24:59. > :25:03.Marianne Vos will not want to come to the finish with sprinters like
:25:04. > :25:10.Giorgia Bronzini. But they have a handicap. It looks like this could
:25:11. > :25:15.be the group. Lizzie Armitstead is right in the thick of it. Elisa
:25:16. > :25:25.Longo Borghini, and Marianne Vos, and Emma Johansson, going for the
:25:26. > :25:29.World Championship. Emma Johansson has been so strong for such a long
:25:30. > :25:34.time, could this be her year? Marianne Vos will take some beating.
:25:35. > :25:43.She is putting in the hard work, she once this to stay her way. Emma
:25:44. > :25:49.Johansson wants to keep this away so they can play cat and mouse towards
:25:50. > :25:53.the finish. Elisa Longo Borghini is just going to follow Marianne Vos.
:25:54. > :25:59.Emma Johansson takes a chance. You may remember Emma Johansson riding
:26:00. > :26:07.in the UK earlier this year, finishing second behind Marianne
:26:08. > :26:08.Vos. She leads now, Marianne Vos in second, Lizzie Armitstead in third,
:26:09. > :26:23.Elisa Longo Borghini on her wheel. Thankfully, it is dry on this
:26:24. > :26:28.descent. We did have concerns, with the rain shower which affected the
:26:29. > :26:33.previous lap. Flying down for the last time, have they got a big
:26:34. > :26:39.enough gap to hold off everybody else? There is not much time for any
:26:40. > :26:49.cat and mouse and they hit the flat. Elisa Longo Borghini is the slowest
:26:50. > :26:55.of the four, but Marianne Vos will need to close the gap. Lizzie
:26:56. > :27:01.Armitstead has got a good spot, she has felt comfortable all race. Like
:27:02. > :27:08.she said, if there is a year she can win, it is this year. She was beaten
:27:09. > :27:12.by Marianne Vos at London 2012. Just as you suggested, Elisa Longo
:27:13. > :27:19.Borghini makes the move. The first to respond is Marianne Vos. Lizzie
:27:20. > :27:24.Armitstead is happy to let the others respond. She is on the wheel
:27:25. > :27:29.of Emma Johansson, playing it cool and keeping something in the tank.
:27:30. > :27:36.She has played it perfectly to this point. She has a quick look behind
:27:37. > :27:41.her. Saving every last ounce of energy for the final sprint, Lizzie
:27:42. > :27:50.Armitstead, hoping they have got enough time to sit there. She winds
:27:51. > :28:00.it up a bit. There is a group chasing them down very quickly.
:28:01. > :28:06.Giorgia Bronzini. If there is a junction, suddenly Giorgia Bronzini
:28:07. > :28:09.could become the favourite. The American would fancy it as well, and
:28:10. > :28:14.Evelyn Stevens is hanging in there. American would fancy it as well, and
:28:15. > :28:20.Lizzie Armitstead is determined not to lead out the sprint, but it is
:28:21. > :28:25.bigger than she would have liked. Germany have a couple of cards to
:28:26. > :28:32.play. This is an exciting finish, we have got sprinters in there.
:28:33. > :28:36.Marianne Vos has had to do a bit. What a finish, as they come into the
:28:37. > :28:44.finishing straight. Germany leading the way. Cromwell is therefore
:28:45. > :28:51.Australia, Marianne Vos is in fourth place. Lizzie Armitstead is not in a
:28:52. > :28:59.great spot, she has got work to do to come round. Lizzie Armitstead is
:29:00. > :29:10.too far back, as Marianne Vos comes towards the front. We are going to
:29:11. > :29:14.have a different world champion. It is extraordinary, the finish, it may
:29:15. > :29:21.have been Pauline Ferrand Prevot over who got it. Lisa Brennauer in
:29:22. > :29:25.second place. What a finish, what an incredible finish, a tremendous
:29:26. > :29:32.sprint, and Pauline Ferrand Prevot oh takes it, Lisa Brennauer
:29:33. > :29:37.finishing in second place. Emma Johansson snatches the bronze medal.
:29:38. > :29:42.Giorgia Bronzini gets fourth place. Cromwell is in fifth place. Lizzie
:29:43. > :29:54.Armitstead out of it in seventh place. Pauline Ferrand Prevot is the
:29:55. > :29:59.new world champion. There she is, we did not see her face at the front
:30:00. > :30:06.very much. Her team-mate did a great couple of terms for her. A little
:30:07. > :30:12.way from the finish, Marianne Vos did not have it in her legs. A bit
:30:13. > :30:21.of confusion on her face. She cannot believe it. She has been told. It
:30:22. > :30:27.sinks in. What a moment for French cycling and four Pauline Ferrand
:30:28. > :30:36.Prevot. She is the world champion, and for the first time since 2006.
:30:37. > :30:41.-- for the first time since 2006, Marianne Vos is not first or second,
:30:42. > :30:47.she finished in a photo finish for 10th place. It was not per day. On
:30:48. > :30:54.the last lap, Lizzie Armitstead tried to have a go on the final
:30:55. > :30:59.climb, which she found she could not get away, she was in a little group
:31:00. > :31:03.of four, and she could see they were about to be caught, and with 500
:31:04. > :31:10.metres to go, the game changed completely.
:31:11. > :31:17.Here is the finish once again, Marianne Vos, orange jersey,
:31:18. > :31:21.left-hand side. As we have seen so many times in the past, you think
:31:22. > :31:27.that she would hit the front and everybody racing for second place,
:31:28. > :31:32.but not the case, Lizzie Armitstead, second from right, blue shorts, all
:31:33. > :31:36.the way through the sprint, not at the front, ground to make up, did
:31:37. > :31:41.not end up in a good position having done so well. So much happened in
:31:42. > :31:45.the last 300 metres. Marianne Vos was on the front, you can see her
:31:46. > :31:50.coming off the wheel, Giorgia Bronzini, having to come across...
:31:51. > :31:54.At the vital moment, Giorgia Bronzini making the move, and it was
:31:55. > :32:06.the French who won. Lizzie I know that you are watching
:32:07. > :32:16.the replay of the Sprint. What do you think? I put all of my ex in one
:32:17. > :32:20.basket on the last climb. I had Giorgia Bronzini's wheel, thought
:32:21. > :32:30.that was the best option. And then just sort of messed it up. Difficult
:32:31. > :32:34.to refocus. The race was just... It sounds weird, saying the race was
:32:35. > :33:16.too easy, I did not win! you could not have done any more.
:33:17. > :33:22.That is cycling. The home straight, they began to look at you, giving
:33:23. > :33:26.you the opportunity. It is easy to say, look back, but with the four of
:33:27. > :33:30.you, you could have made a race of it. I do not understand why Emma
:33:31. > :33:38.Johansson was not working, she did not have a sprinter behind her.
:33:39. > :33:43.Negative race... I'm disappointed. Maybe one day I will learn. Thank
:33:44. > :33:52.you very much. Then, thank you for speaking with us, we know that it is
:33:53. > :33:57.frustrating. STUDIO: Great delight in the French camp, the pick of
:33:58. > :34:05.Marianne Vos, even we spoke about her, she came through with a sprint
:34:06. > :34:10.finish, and I have got alongside me Rochelle and Rob. They have come
:34:11. > :34:16.down from commentary. She said that the race was a little bit too easy.
:34:17. > :34:19.You could see the frustration on her face with a few laps to go, great
:34:20. > :34:23.support from team-mates, asking them to put down the pressure, it began
:34:24. > :34:28.to lighten up, but I think she would have liked a harder race from the
:34:29. > :34:36.start. -- liven up. With that finish, we thought it was going to
:34:37. > :34:40.be the fall riders away. And suddenly the Sprint group came from
:34:41. > :34:44.nowhere. Certainly looked like the move, anybody who has that kind of
:34:45. > :34:48.distance going into the last few kilometres, that should stay away.
:34:49. > :34:58.But the combination of riders just behind... The German squad
:34:59. > :35:02.desperately trying to bring it back. It all came together, it was looking
:35:03. > :35:06.so good for Lizzie Armitstead. She did not put a foot wrong, so
:35:07. > :35:12.well-positioned. Team around her were great. There was a little bit
:35:13. > :35:20.of an lucky few moves, a crashed... A couple of the riders. -- crash.
:35:21. > :35:23.What can you say, I can understand her frustration, really was in form
:35:24. > :35:28.but the race did not pan out her way. We saw Annie Last do a decent
:35:29. > :35:32.stretch, Lucy Garner suffered and pulled out, we talked about her
:35:33. > :35:37.team... Do you think the team was not quite strong enough to make it
:35:38. > :35:40.more difficult more soon. The team were there, they made it difficult
:35:41. > :35:44.when Lizzie Armitstead asked them to work, we saw a great move from Anna
:35:45. > :35:50.Christian and in the final laps, Hannah Barnes. Then the race... Then
:35:51. > :35:53.it was up to the other teams, if it was going to go in the favour of
:35:54. > :35:57.Lizzie Armitstead, it was up to the other teams to make it difficult
:35:58. > :36:01.from the start. A little bit too much to ask from the British team to
:36:02. > :36:08.start from the gun. Maybe not their responsibility. Lizzie Armitstead,
:36:09. > :36:11.she did everything right today. Unfortunately the pack came back.
:36:12. > :36:15.She would have liked to have come to the finish with those for. Could
:36:16. > :36:23.they have worked harder at the end, those for? Lizzie Armitstead said
:36:24. > :36:26.Emma Johansson did not do as much as she would have expected. They did
:36:27. > :36:31.not work hard enough but there was a group not too far behind who were
:36:32. > :36:38.willing and had riders capable and willing to fall on the sword,
:36:39. > :36:43.basically, for their team-mates. -- those four. That is how racing works
:36:44. > :36:47.out. A word about the champion, we did not hear much about her
:36:48. > :36:52.throughout the race, she was very quiet, and then out of nowhere, the
:36:53. > :37:03.1 they had not picked was right there! You would not pick from that
:37:04. > :37:08.group, Ferrand Prevot. We had Giorgia Bronzini, we had Lisa
:37:09. > :37:11.Brennauer, we had Marianne Vos... Two golds and a silver from this
:37:12. > :37:15.World Championship, Lisa Brennauer, very well done. Pretty impressive
:37:16. > :37:21.performance from her, winning the time trial. Having ridden in the
:37:22. > :37:24.team time trial and the individual, and then lining up the road race...
:37:25. > :37:28.Germany did write for another rider, Lichtenberg, but in the end,
:37:29. > :37:35.Lisa Brennauer was there and she was very powerful at the finish. Giorgia
:37:36. > :37:38.Bronzini, riding for your team, heavy fall but still picked herself
:37:39. > :37:48.up and rode very well. Not so far away. Fantastic four Giorgia
:37:49. > :37:53.Bronzini, she had to work very hard. She had a great spring, she was
:37:54. > :37:59.boxed in, but maybe not the legs after such a demanding course. --
:38:00. > :38:00.fantastic for Giorgia Bronzini. How do you assess
:38:01. > :38:06.fantastic for Giorgia Bronzini. How wrote, and the fact that she was
:38:07. > :38:13.injured beforehand? -- rode. I think that she rode well, we saw her going
:38:14. > :38:17.across the moves, on the last lap, she did everything she could she had
:38:18. > :38:20.team-mates around. They played their card. Ultimately she ran out of legs
:38:21. > :38:24.on the finishing straight. Again, I do not think she put a foot wrong
:38:25. > :38:32.coming into this race, she certainly rode as expected. Another quick word
:38:33. > :38:34.on Lizzie, she is going to be disappointed, Rob says nothing could
:38:35. > :38:39.have been done different, would you agree? I agree, she could not have
:38:40. > :38:42.done anything different. The race could have gone different, she could
:38:43. > :38:50.have been more aggressive, perhaps a different result. She did everything
:38:51. > :38:53.she could today, she did the team proud. She will be disappointed, but
:38:54. > :38:56.upon reflection, she has had a fantastic season, came into the race
:38:57. > :39:01.at the World Championships as one of the favourites. Proof she was one of
:39:02. > :39:05.the strongest in the race. Not quite for Lizzie Armitstead but a great
:39:06. > :39:07.women's race and now we will look back to Wednesday, the men's time
:39:08. > :39:10.trial, Tony Martin of Germany looking for his fourth title but
:39:11. > :39:20.Bradley Wiggins had other ideas! COMMENTATOR: There is not going to
:39:21. > :39:26.be too much in this, as Tony Martin heads up to the time check. Ten
:39:27. > :39:30.seconds or so. 9.64 seconds between Bradley Wiggins and the defending
:39:31. > :39:36.champion, Tony Martin. The race is on here. Back now with Bradley
:39:37. > :39:40.Wiggins. CO-COMMENTATOR: Peddling the gear well, if he was mauling a
:39:41. > :39:45.big year, that would be signs that he is starting to tie up. Looking
:39:46. > :39:50.good. Looking good. You wonder about the time comparison, whether he
:39:51. > :39:56.really is that far ahead. Maybe a few more seconds... He may well have
:39:57. > :40:01.done, he may have done, beginning to suffer, that big year that he tends
:40:02. > :40:16.to use. Martin looked as though he was on the limit. -- that big gear.
:40:17. > :40:20.He out of it yet, not by a long way. If he gets any closer the gutter, he
:40:21. > :40:24.is potentially picking up a puncture here or there, do not get too close
:40:25. > :40:51.to the edge of the road, that would be disastrous.
:40:52. > :40:58.This is very technical, the riders will have gone over this bit, to get
:40:59. > :41:03.it right in their heads. If his race radio is working, if he has one on,
:41:04. > :41:08.then the team car will be telling him, next right-hander, a little bit
:41:09. > :41:17.like pace notes. In a rally car. Tony Martin still looking good. He
:41:18. > :41:29.has settled down a bit. Unlike Roman Dennis, here, pulling shapes all
:41:30. > :41:35.over the top of this one. A little bit windy, just in his face. Heading
:41:36. > :41:40.for home. Under his wheels, heading for home. 20 seconds in it between
:41:41. > :41:45.Martin and Bradley Wiggins, according to the GPS.
:41:46. > :41:54.Place your bets now. This is going to be so tight, we will not have
:41:55. > :41:57.long to wait, when Bradley Wiggins crosses the line, because Martin is
:41:58. > :41:58.the only rider still out there. Here's a couple of minutes behind on
:41:59. > :42:13.the road. Will this man be able to produce a
:42:14. > :42:18.ride which is good enough to claim the medal, because he has been there
:42:19. > :42:28.or thereabouts, and judging by the look on his face, he is going to
:42:29. > :42:32.leave everything out there. It is a great ride by Vasil Kiriyienka, Team
:42:33. > :42:36.Sky, he has done it, and finally, Nelson Oliveira is owing to have to
:42:37. > :42:47.switch seats and moved to the second spot! Huge effort, absolutely. The
:42:48. > :42:52.final few hundred metres. Thankfully, that is over. Must have
:42:53. > :42:56.hurt, he has clearly shown the expression there. Left everything
:42:57. > :43:03.out on the road, great ride for him, from the Belarussian. There is the
:43:04. > :43:06.man who at the moment is in the box seat for gold. Here is the man who
:43:07. > :43:09.has won it for the last three years, and will cling on with every last
:43:10. > :43:20.ounce of effort to that rainbow jersey. This should be a good lesson
:43:21. > :43:28.in how to dissent, nice tucked position. -- descends Slightly over
:43:29. > :43:37.break, for the bend. Got it a little bit wrong. -- how to descend. Buggy
:43:38. > :43:40.Wiggins looking very good. Were coming through saying that Alex
:43:41. > :43:47.Telles it did not feel at his best, did not feel it. -- Alex Dowsett.
:43:48. > :43:51.Perhaps did not recover from his efforts at the Tour of Britain. That
:43:52. > :43:58.is fair. Certainly you expect him to be up there a little bit higher on
:43:59. > :44:04.the classification today. But it was a big effort that he put in at the
:44:05. > :44:09.Tour of Britain. Roland Denis, down the finishing straight, up towards
:44:10. > :44:13.the line. -- Rohan Dennis. Always a major player in races against the
:44:14. > :44:16.watch these days commonly will be in years to come, still just 24 years
:44:17. > :44:22.old. APPLAUSE He is going to have to wait.
:44:23. > :44:25.Challenge a on another day, Rohan Dennis, the new second fastest time,
:44:26. > :44:29.beating by Vasil Kiriyienka, and Dennis, the new second fastest time,
:44:30. > :44:35.suddenly, Nelson Oliveira will have to change seats again. Hadley
:44:36. > :44:41.Wiggins, about to crash the client. -- Bradley Wiggins. -- about to
:44:42. > :44:50.crash the client. Lovely with them being tapped out. -- crash the
:44:51. > :44:54.climb. He will be giving it everything. Said he felt good in the
:44:55. > :44:58.time trial win of the Tour of Britain. He liked the course, he
:44:59. > :45:02.liked the form he was in, hoping that it might be his year this year,
:45:03. > :45:08.definitely in with a chance of gold here. Certainly put himself in that
:45:09. > :45:12.position. If that time is anything to go by, if we can believe that,
:45:13. > :45:24.he's taking more time on it then Tony Martin.
:45:25. > :45:34.This dissent is going to be key. -- descends. The speed he is going to
:45:35. > :45:39.be able to carry into the corners as he heads down. I can only presume
:45:40. > :45:45.has the knowledge he is ahead, and so need is not have to panic is not
:45:46. > :46:02.have to panic for everything. He can take it easier.
:46:03. > :46:08.Whatever happens now, Tony Martin will have to be squinting towards
:46:09. > :46:12.the line. Back with the man, leading the way, Bradley Wiggins. Going
:46:13. > :46:21.quick, well over 40 mph. Flying down this descent. Dry and smooth. Cover
:46:22. > :46:33.the brakes, on the brakes. Coming towards the conclusion of his right
:46:34. > :46:38.shortly, Tom Domoulin. He only has Bradley Wiggins and Martin behind
:46:39. > :46:43.him, bronze medal is at stake. 57 minutes to beat.
:46:44. > :46:53.Looks as if there is every chance he is going to beat 57.13.44. Well
:46:54. > :46:59.within his grasp. Here he comes... Vasil Kiriyienka, finishing fourth,
:47:00. > :47:07.again, just as he did last year. Agonisingly close to a medal.
:47:08. > :47:12.Tremendous ride from the Dutchman. Certainly happy with that, if you
:47:13. > :47:15.said to him coming into the race that he would come away with a medal
:47:16. > :47:22.he would have been jumping through hoops. .
:47:23. > :47:31.Gold at stake, man against man. This is when he is at his best, when it
:47:32. > :47:36.is quick and fast. A little bit more in reserve when it goes quick, what
:47:37. > :47:40.does he have in the Lakes, does he have the strength and enjoyments
:47:41. > :47:48.left? Any power he has in his Lakes and has got to be using our. Bradley
:47:49. > :47:53.Wiggins towards the finish. This is going to be the fastest time, will
:47:54. > :47:56.it be a ride to gold? Bradley Wiggins beat Tony Martin to the
:47:57. > :48:02.Olympic Games gold medal two years ago, will he beat into the Olympic
:48:03. > :48:07.-- will he beat him to the championship medal this time? 56
:48:08. > :48:12.minutes 25.52... It could be enough for gold, we will not have long to
:48:13. > :48:18.wait. Absolutely incredible effort by Bradley Wiggins, he can do no
:48:19. > :48:22.more, he will not even get time to get into the hot seat by the time
:48:23. > :48:26.Tony Martin is through! He will know already if it is going to be the top
:48:27. > :48:30.seed or the second step. He will not have time to get his breath back
:48:31. > :48:43.before he knows if he is a world champion.
:48:44. > :48:57.The time set by Bradley Wiggins, 56. 25. -- 50 6.25. Clock ticking for
:48:58. > :48:59.Tony Martin, fourth world time trial championship in a row he is going
:49:00. > :49:14.for, Bradley Wiggins cannot even look he's so tired after the effort.
:49:15. > :49:20.GPS well outside the time of Bradley Wiggins, we will only believe it
:49:21. > :49:23.when we can see it. I think we are looking at the world champion Derek,
:49:24. > :49:29.on his back with the gargantuan effort he has put in, here comes
:49:30. > :49:49.Tony Martin. All the way to the line. Bradley Wiggins is the world
:49:50. > :49:54.champion, he has done a. -- he has done it! It is Bradley Wiggins's
:49:55. > :49:58.day, it is Britain's day, it is a gold medal for Bradley Wiggins to
:49:59. > :50:00.add to the Tour de France victory and the Olympic Games success and
:50:01. > :50:06.his World Championship successes on the track over all those years, he
:50:07. > :50:13.has finally managed it, in the road time trial. 20 years after Chris
:50:14. > :50:15.Boardman won the first men's elite time trial, Bradley Wiggins joined
:50:16. > :50:32.him on the roll of honour. Mission accomplished! Bradley
:50:33. > :50:38.Wiggins delivers on the biggest stage once again. Congratulations,
:50:39. > :50:41.that is the full set, incredible, where it is the full set,
:50:42. > :50:44.incredible, where did this once it? It is right up there with the
:50:45. > :50:50.Olympic title, I think. On the time trial anyway. We spoke before about
:50:51. > :50:53.Tony being perhaps... Somebody did, perhaps it was with you... Possibly
:50:54. > :50:58.the best time trialist we have ever seen. Getting the better of him, I
:50:59. > :51:02.said, if there was ever a course we were going to beat him on, it was
:51:03. > :51:06.going to be this one, I knew how difficult the last 15 K is. If I
:51:07. > :51:10.just executed my own right, I knew that I was going to be in the
:51:11. > :51:15.ballpark and close to him. No time splits the whole way, just focused
:51:16. > :51:21.on my own right. Said it was ten seconds up on him, and I thought,
:51:22. > :51:26.world champion! Still carried everything down the descent. It is
:51:27. > :51:34.still in the back of your mind, has he come back? Really nice. Cannot
:51:35. > :51:38.believe you will not be wearing the rainbow jersey in the time trials
:51:39. > :51:42.next year... I will be, but I will be doing it in Britain, so I shall
:51:43. > :51:48.be riding up and down motorways as the champion! Michael Hutchinson,
:51:49. > :51:52.all of that. In this kind of form, do you wish you were doing it next
:51:53. > :51:55.week. Not at all because I can get back to this, and hopefully, if I do
:51:56. > :52:04.that properly, I can extend the record. That is it, really. Will you
:52:05. > :52:07.be back to defend it? This time next year, we will be nine months from
:52:08. > :52:15.the Olympic Games, I shall probably be in full track mode. What about
:52:16. > :52:19.with your Team Sky hat on, news talking about the track. You have
:52:20. > :52:24.got to start with Rio. As a big point in a couple of years time,
:52:25. > :52:28.and-tastic way to maybe finish his career, on a fantastic high. Work
:52:29. > :52:32.back from there. You have got goals along the way, and if he can win
:52:33. > :52:36.some of them, what is left? He has won pretty much everything.
:52:37. > :52:48.Incredible athlete. Incredible career. National time trial jersey,
:52:49. > :52:54.Olympic one. Now he has the time trial as well, averaging 50 K PH,
:52:55. > :53:11.averaging that, how tough that was, that must be incredible, you must be
:53:12. > :53:15.in awe. He has a great sense of history, and occasion, beating tiny
:53:16. > :53:19.Martin, argued be the greatest time trialist of all time, that will have
:53:20. > :53:24.made it even more special. Yes, to see the way that the road, bearing
:53:25. > :53:27.in mind Tony Martin was going for his fourth consecutive title,
:53:28. > :53:30.started two minutes behind him, he will have had all of the information
:53:31. > :53:34.he needed on Bradley, and as we said, went out there completely
:53:35. > :53:39.blind, wrote his own race until the last few kilometres when he
:53:40. > :53:43.realised, great ride, and I think we mentioned earlier, had he finished
:53:44. > :53:47.his career with out pulling the time trial jersey on it would have been a
:53:48. > :53:53.great shame, and certainly a big tip missing. He has gone there, what a
:53:54. > :53:57.time to do it. Interesting psyche, Bradley he can lose focus and get
:53:58. > :54:03.it, but when he has the bit between his teeth, few riders like him. He
:54:04. > :54:08.will have taken confidence from the Tour of Britain time trial, he
:54:09. > :54:12.really got his mind on track and he focused, and like you said, when he
:54:13. > :54:17.woke up commonly knew it was the day and it was on. Rob, where does
:54:18. > :54:21.Bradley sit in the list of all-time great cyclist? He is the greatest
:54:22. > :54:25.British cyclist ever, without doubt, but when we talk about world
:54:26. > :54:32.cyclist, where would you put him, given his range? I'm going to get
:54:33. > :54:40.lambasted... If you talk about European cycling... Bradley Wiggins
:54:41. > :54:44.is there or thereabouts, but when you look from a British perspective,
:54:45. > :54:48.what he has done kind of transcends cycling as well... Years the only
:54:49. > :54:55.rider to have the titles that he has got on the track, at WorldCom
:54:56. > :55:00.Olympic, and then Grand Tours... Tour de France, he has been on the
:55:01. > :55:06.podium three times in Grand Tours, as opposed to Eddie Max. Where he
:55:07. > :55:08.stands in all-time greats... Unfortunately, for us, he is kind of
:55:09. > :55:22.down there. Eddie Merckx. -- Eddie Merckx. This does sent
:55:23. > :55:24.ridiculous, if and when he can go and win the Tour de France again,
:55:25. > :55:32.just and win the Tour de France again,
:55:33. > :55:35.really... What about as a spreading? I would say that he is quite famous
:55:36. > :55:39.and one of the names every blue recognises, because of his
:55:40. > :55:45.personality, not something that goes unnoticed. He has a real presence.
:55:46. > :55:50.Bradley Wiggins has quite a strong name for an Israeli in. But if he
:55:51. > :55:59.can yes, if he can focus on something then we have seen that he
:56:00. > :56:04.is capable of doing it. He is bigger than cycling in the UK. Wherever he
:56:05. > :56:08.sits in the hierarchy of cycling, I do not think that it really matters.
:56:09. > :56:13.From our point of view, he is absolutely incredible. Not quite a
:56:14. > :56:17.gold for Lizzie Armitstead today, she finished seventh, we can catch
:56:18. > :56:22.up now with the results of that women's road race, incredibly
:56:23. > :56:26.exciting, in the balance right until the end, and it was the French
:56:27. > :56:30.rider, Pauline Ferrand Prevot who took the gold medal, Lisa Brennauer
:56:31. > :56:34.of Germany took the silver, to add to the gold medal that she won in
:56:35. > :56:40.the time trial, and Emma Johansson taking silver. What a race it was. A
:56:41. > :56:47.few last reflections on the women's race. Lizzie David Ball but it was
:56:48. > :56:51.not good enough. Did not turn out in her favour, the way the race
:56:52. > :56:56.finished, but she rode a perfect race, she proved she was the
:56:57. > :57:00.strongest. One of the strongest, if not the strongest. Fantastic season.
:57:01. > :57:03.Peaked for the World Championships. She had the form and did everything
:57:04. > :57:08.right, unfortunately it did not play into her favour. We will be back
:57:09. > :57:16.again tomorrow the men's race, that is on the red button. BBC Two,
:57:17. > :57:19.1:20pm. The small matter of 120 kilometres and 14,000 feet of
:57:20. > :57:23.climbing. And pointing you towards the website, everything you need to
:57:24. > :57:26.know about getting involved with cycling.
:57:27. > :57:32.That is it for all of us. We are back again tomorrow with the men's
:57:33. > :57:33.race. It was not quite good enough for Lizzie Armitstead, we will see
:57:34. > :58:08.you tomorrow. Hold on, there is just one more
:58:09. > :58:11.thing. We've got a newbie.
