:00:34. > :00:42.Good afternoon and welcome to one of the most famous stages in the world.

:00:43. > :00:50.What happens here once a year has changed a lot from the days when

:00:51. > :00:54.darting diets to the modern era. In 2016 we will no doubt once again

:00:55. > :00:58.beat at least one new future star of the sport who will get his big break

:00:59. > :01:01.right here in the dream factory of darts. The crowd will be there

:01:02. > :01:44.alongside some very familiar faces. The famous and unknown are ready to

:01:45. > :01:50.go for the 2016 BDO world darts championship. Whether you are on top

:01:51. > :01:55.of a hill in London or in the leafy countryside of sorry it is a sport

:01:56. > :01:59.all about these people, the fans. No drink limit, no segregation, no

:02:00. > :02:04.problems. Looking down from the balcony is the Manu slots first

:02:05. > :02:08.dance. He's been around for so long that the National Trust have just

:02:09. > :02:13.named him a listed building, Bobby George. Thank you very much. Nine

:02:14. > :02:18.days with you is a pleasure for me. On one hand this is a comfortable

:02:19. > :02:21.pair of shoes, the BDO Lakeside World Championship, on the other

:02:22. > :02:25.side it is excitement because who is the next Jelle Klaasen or Dave

:02:26. > :02:31.Chisnall? This is where they make their starts, here. They do well

:02:32. > :02:36.here and then go on and on and on. 48 men in this tournament, it is

:02:37. > :02:39.very difficult to say who's going to win. On that note let's have a

:02:40. > :02:44.little look through the draw before we even get into today's action.

:02:45. > :02:49.Obvious names jump out, Glen Durrant is the number one seed, will we be

:02:50. > :02:56.seeing the current champion? You never know. Six tournaments, number

:02:57. > :02:59.one seed, the number one PDO player so he has obviously done very well

:03:00. > :03:06.last year. If you go right down to the bottom, I think Jamie Hughes

:03:07. > :03:13.against Rosamunde Comrie is too close to call.

:03:14. > :03:20.Montgomery is a really good player, serious, straight darts, no messing

:03:21. > :03:24.about. Interesting because up the road everyone was talking about

:03:25. > :03:28.Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor and Gary Anderson was just saying,

:03:29. > :03:32.ha-ha, this is brilliant, nobody is talking about me. Same thing here.

:03:33. > :03:39.Wait. He has been coming this year. You don't hear nothing about him,

:03:40. > :03:43.but obviously he has been playing good starts to qualify. Absolutely,

:03:44. > :03:47.that's one to keep an eye on. The bottom half of the draw is

:03:48. > :03:51.intriguing as well. A mixture of the unknown and those who have been here

:03:52. > :03:55.before and got their feet under the table. Martin Adams fresh from his

:03:56. > :03:57.first appearance in the grand slam of darts which was unbelievable.

:03:58. > :04:06.Scott Mitchell, the defending champion. We know it is difficult to

:04:07. > :04:12.retain it. What chances that Scotty Dog will be barking? If you are

:04:13. > :04:17.champion it is very difficult. Being champion, been a pop star, looking

:04:18. > :04:20.after what he's doing, he's getting money come he's smiling, shaking

:04:21. > :04:27.people's hands. He hasn't been playing enough. He has gone up a bit

:04:28. > :04:33.this year. But he hasn't played like he did last year. He has his work

:04:34. > :04:35.cut out. One game at times sweet Bobby. Here's what we've got coming

:04:36. > :04:50.up for this afternoon. Tony O'Shea could go if he's not

:04:51. > :04:57.careful, taking on the Welshman Jeff Williams. Then it's the women's

:04:58. > :05:04.champion Lisa Ashton armed with those ton plus checkouts at the

:05:05. > :05:07.ready to defend the title. After a qualifier it's party time with

:05:08. > :05:11.Darryl Fitton, hoping to leave an informed Dennis Harbour all at sea.

:05:12. > :05:20.Here's a warning for you, there will be puns. First up the silverback has

:05:21. > :05:24.got his work cut out today. Whether he is playing at the grand slam of

:05:25. > :05:28.the Lakeside he is the People's Champion, but who wants to be that?

:05:29. > :05:30.He wants a major trophy in the cabinet. Let's find out how he is

:05:31. > :05:39.feeling this year. Great to be back at the Lakeside,

:05:40. > :05:43.about 15 years for me now. I've played literally everywhere on the

:05:44. > :05:47.planet in darts. Australia, America. I've won a big tournament in

:05:48. > :05:52.America. And nothing is like the Lakeside. Even losing out the

:05:53. > :05:59.Lakeside is a pleasure, to be honest, sometimes. Just to go on

:06:00. > :06:04.that stage. Last 18 months have not been brilliant, dropped down the

:06:05. > :06:07.rankings quite a bit. But the last three or more months, everyone will

:06:08. > :06:11.tell you I have started playing well again. Got some wins under my belt

:06:12. > :06:16.and played well recently in Poland on television. I'm actually looking

:06:17. > :06:21.forward to this. It's been awhile since I've said that if I'm honest.

:06:22. > :06:26.That it's my job and you've got to get on with it. Probably does play

:06:27. > :06:32.on my mind, lost the last two tournaments. Last year I lost to

:06:33. > :06:38.Scotland he went on to be world champion. I was leading for

:06:39. > :06:41.virtually the whole match. Josh Wells, if I could have stuck that

:06:42. > :06:47.last art in, it could have been me. You never know. That's why I both

:06:48. > :06:57.love and hate darts, you just never know. He's had a great year. He's a

:06:58. > :07:00.young kid. Couldn't have got much of a tougher round than the one I've

:07:01. > :07:04.got to be honest. I'm looking forward to it. That's a bit

:07:05. > :07:10.different this year. I'm going to enjoy it. I might not have too many

:07:11. > :07:15.of these left in me so I'm going to enjoy every minute I can. Tony of

:07:16. > :07:21.course is such a familiar story. The less familiar face is Jim Williams

:07:22. > :07:26.and this is a coin toss. It is a really close game. People don't know

:07:27. > :07:31.Jim Williams. But he is World Cup singles champion. He represents

:07:32. > :07:38.Wales. Apparently he is a very, very good dart player. We know he is, he

:07:39. > :07:43.has been up three times. He cut the figure of a more modern dart player,

:07:44. > :07:50.look at that. Got a bit of bicep going on, bit of nip and tuck. No

:07:51. > :07:55.real sign of a beer belly. Well he's young, isn't he? He's got a while to

:07:56. > :08:00.grow a beer belly, it takes a while. Obviously he's got his work cut out

:08:01. > :08:06.but apparently he's very good. I'm looking forward to this game. What

:08:07. > :08:10.about Tony? Every year, the same situation, we know how popular he

:08:11. > :08:13.is. We try to disconnect ourselves from the emotional attachment we

:08:14. > :08:16.have to him. But once he goes further into the tournament we all

:08:17. > :08:21.start believing again and then get our hearts broken. Runner-up three

:08:22. > :08:29.times must hurt him. Three times he has been here. Could be his lucky

:08:30. > :08:32.year. On my radio show the other day you were picking the all-time

:08:33. > :08:36.greatest walk on music in darts and you picked his as the best and it's

:08:37. > :08:41.true because even when he's not playing basing his name at every

:08:42. > :08:46.event. Hey baby, love it. It's great walk on music. Are you dancing, are

:08:47. > :09:00.you ready? Let's get down to it. Ladies and gentlemen, on the half of

:09:01. > :09:06.the British Darts Organisation, welcome to the 2016 Lakeside World

:09:07. > :09:14.Championships. We are about to get the first round underway here at the

:09:15. > :09:21.home of world darts, the Lakeside. CHEERING

:09:22. > :09:27.We now understand to the stage the Turkish open champion, a Welsh

:09:28. > :09:29.international, he is the reigning World Cup singles champion, Jim

:09:30. > :10:25.Williams. We now introduce a former winner of

:10:26. > :10:30.12 world ranking titles, a former World Cup singles champion, he is

:10:31. > :10:32.three times a Lakeside World Championship finalist, silverback

:10:33. > :10:58.Tony O'Shea. # Hey, hey baby

:10:59. > :11:07.# I want to know if you'll be my girl

:11:08. > :11:10.# When I saw you walking down the street

:11:11. > :11:13.# I said that's the kind of girl I'd like to meet

:11:14. > :11:17.# She's so pretty # She's so fine

:11:18. > :11:30.# And can make her mine own mind # Hey, hey baby

:11:31. > :11:34.# I want to know if you'll be my girl

:11:35. > :11:40.# Everybody in the house! #. One-man may be more well-known than

:11:41. > :11:47.the other but there is the width of a dart between them on the stage.

:11:48. > :11:55.COMMENTATOR: Here we go then, Lakeside 2016 underway with one of

:11:56. > :12:00.the real favourites here, one of the fixtures, every year since 2002,

:12:01. > :12:04.Tony O'Shea. He has been standing on that stage. Only four players have

:12:05. > :12:10.made more appearances than the silverback. Today's opponent by

:12:11. > :12:15.contrast, Jim Williams, has only been here once before. And he didn't

:12:16. > :12:20.win a set as he lost in round one. Mind you, Williams is the seeds

:12:21. > :12:25.today, he won to ranking titles in 2015. Tony O'Shea nervously

:12:26. > :12:33.contemplating three first-round defeats. England against Wales.

:12:34. > :12:46.First set, first leg, it's Jim to throw first. And we are underway in

:12:47. > :12:54.2016. Tony O'Shea has held up pretty ropey old year. But I was speaking

:12:55. > :12:58.to him yesterday and he says that he is improving. Whether or not he will

:12:59. > :13:02.improve enough to give Williams a real run for his money, I don't

:13:03. > :13:10.know. There is not much to split them in the betting. Yes, Williams

:13:11. > :13:17.the mild favourite. But there's very little to compensate for the

:13:18. > :13:21.experience he brings to the stage. I mentioned those two first-round

:13:22. > :13:26.defeats in his last two visits. Last year he lost to the eventual

:13:27. > :13:35.champion Scott Mitchell in his second sudden leg defeat.

:13:36. > :13:47.First to three sets, through to the second round. First to three wins

:13:48. > :13:53.each set. If it does get to two sets all and 4p stats when we get to a

:13:54. > :13:56.sudden-death leg. One of the most likeable guys in the game, Tony

:13:57. > :14:01.O'Shea. One of the most popular around the country. Stockport's

:14:02. > :14:08.finest. And there is his wife giving her support, living every moment.

:14:09. > :14:24.Yeah, she loves her visits here. Plenty of people in fancy dress

:14:25. > :14:31.enjoying the atmosphere as ever. I think they did play darts at

:14:32. > :14:42.Downton. Treble 24 tops for the first leg of the match. 82 to take

:14:43. > :14:59.the opening leg against darts. Good effort. To hold his throw in the

:15:00. > :15:07.first leg of the match. Two 10s. And that will settle him down nicely. So

:15:08. > :15:11.much experience, Tony O'Shea, seven major TV finals he has reached over

:15:12. > :15:33.his long career, but he has not had a BDO title since back in 2014.

:15:34. > :15:45.He has reached three finals, he lost to Ted Hankey 7-6 in 2009. He

:15:46. > :15:53.reached the final again in 2012, Tony O'Shea, he lost to Christian

:15:54. > :15:58.Kist. And then the following year, a 7-1 defeat by Scott Waites in the

:15:59. > :16:05.final. So many people here would love to see Tony O'Shea left the

:16:06. > :16:09.world title. Most notably Hemed. His BDO ranking has slept he has gone

:16:10. > :16:15.down to 24 in the BDO world rankings. Tony would love to be able

:16:16. > :16:33.to produce a return to form here this week. -- most notably him. 180.

:16:34. > :16:39.That is handy. O'Shea can check this one out, in theory. Not now though.

:16:40. > :16:50.It would have been a nice riposte to the first maxim of Lakeside 2016.

:16:51. > :16:57.This, treble 19 and tops for a break of throw. He now cannot finish. He

:16:58. > :17:03.composes himself. 62, that is a great first dart. A slight

:17:04. > :17:17.adjustment along the oche. That is not a bad marker.

:17:18. > :17:24.And very nervous final dart. He knows where it is. Close with two.

:17:25. > :17:40.There we go. O'Shea, up and running. An interesting matchup. Form against

:17:41. > :17:50.experience. A sell-out crowd at the Lakeside. Living the moment. They

:17:51. > :17:59.are in party mood, as ever. They have been since 11 o'clock this

:18:00. > :18:05.morning axel nation Mark -- 11 o'clock this morning. All the new

:18:06. > :18:10.years resolutions get put back one week if you're coming to Lakeside.

:18:11. > :18:17.It depends on your resolution. It might be the reverse of what most

:18:18. > :18:36.people are anticipating. Go for a day in 2016. -- go for it. 140.

:18:37. > :18:50.Nothing between them so fire. Not in terms of scorers or legs. If O'Shea

:18:51. > :18:56.can jump all over this, 140 would seek him nicely. That is not bad. It

:18:57. > :19:03.has given him a big check out opportunity.

:19:04. > :19:18.Here we go. Another one of those. Tops for 160. The first two darts

:19:19. > :19:23.were beautiful. I cannot believe that he missed the double by some

:19:24. > :19:29.distance. He needs Shanghai but he cannot do it now. Yes, Shanghai,

:19:30. > :19:42.what they call it when they visit treble and a single and the double

:19:43. > :19:45.of the same number. Tony O'Shea were like that one. He was annoyed when

:19:46. > :19:57.he missed the double top opportunity. Now, crucially maybe, I

:19:58. > :20:05.break against the throw. Poised, one more leg required to take the

:20:06. > :20:14.opening set. Just 60 to take off. -- kick. You can be an old they

:20:15. > :20:16.formulate coming onto the Lakeside stage, but everybody says, there is

:20:17. > :20:23.something special about playing up there. Some people can do it, some

:20:24. > :20:29.people learn to do it, like Scott Mitchell last year, some people just

:20:30. > :20:35.cannot. Scott Mitchell, the defending champion, not in action

:20:36. > :20:45.today. A lovely opening dart from O'Shea. He has had a nine darkter on

:20:46. > :21:03.television, Tony, in 2007 against Lewis. -- darter. The perfect leg of

:21:04. > :21:12.darts. Nine darts. It has not been done here for a while. That was the

:21:13. > :21:16.wife of Jim Williams, Natalie, watching on. She is hoping that her

:21:17. > :21:28.husband might become the fourth world champion. That was a good

:21:29. > :21:47.visit. A very steady leg from Jim Williams. O'Shea can put this away

:21:48. > :21:51.now. 91, going the bull rate. By fractions. Williams can make him

:21:52. > :22:01.pay. He must make him pay. He must take double 12. With that dart, of

:22:02. > :22:07.course, the advantage switches to Williams. He has the dart in what

:22:08. > :22:16.would be the deciding leg in the opening set.

:22:17. > :22:27.Another steady ton to kick I saw from Jim Williams. When he is

:22:28. > :22:42.missing, it is not missing by much. Some good fancy dress you today.

:22:43. > :22:53.52,000 quid is the prize for checking out in nine darts. We were

:22:54. > :23:01.wondering, because it is not as usual, in the programme. We thought

:23:02. > :23:10.it was not going to happen, but it will, it will be paid, the 50 grand,

:23:11. > :23:15.52 grand if it happens. O'Shea is effectively taking the dart make. If

:23:16. > :23:23.that had been a treble 19, he would have been nicely set. O'Shea, 200

:23:24. > :23:37.required anti-effectively has six darts from here. -- and he

:23:38. > :23:46.effectively. He needs a treble. He was throwing that one from square

:23:47. > :23:52.leg. These are good darts. Outstanding from Williams. It puts

:23:53. > :24:00.O'Shea under pressure. Williams and a strong position. No check out for

:24:01. > :24:06.O'Shea on this occasion. That was a loose one. And nice cover shot. Here

:24:07. > :24:20.we go, for his first ever set on that stage. He lost 3-0 two years

:24:21. > :24:30.ago on his debut. Second set, first leg, Tony to throw first. Few signs

:24:31. > :24:33.of nerves they are. I think Tony will feel that is one that got away.

:24:34. > :24:57.He has got to put it behind him. Jim Williams seeded 12 in this

:24:58. > :25:00.competition. That is by virtue of his two ranking tournament victories

:25:01. > :25:06.this year, the Turkish open and the Antwerp open. He beat the Welsh

:25:07. > :25:16.captain in the final of that Turkish open. He has brought plenty of

:25:17. > :25:26.friends from Presteigne Powys, where he lives.

:25:27. > :25:34.Tony O'Shea, a massive Stockport County fun. There is Jane, Jim's

:25:35. > :25:48.mum. So far, so good. 64 for the opening leg of this

:25:49. > :26:01.second set. That is one way of doing it. A little raise of the eyebrow.

:26:02. > :26:09.He will be back. He is trying to read himself up, Tony O'Shea. He was

:26:10. > :26:18.unfortunate with that double eight. This is a big one. He has already

:26:19. > :26:29.missed ten darts and the double, Tony O'Shea.

:26:30. > :26:38.Double ten for O'Shea. There you go. He had only got two out of 12 prior

:26:39. > :26:43.to that. That will settle him down. His wife looks like she is suffering

:26:44. > :26:50.serious stress watching this. That is unlucky. That is 60 points on the

:26:51. > :26:57.floor he is picking up. Back came in and out of the treble 20. It was a

:26:58. > :27:16.bounce out. O'Shea yet to hit the maximum. He

:27:17. > :27:48.has only had one visit of 140 or more. That is his 15th ton.

:27:49. > :28:00.Warners ever here today, the Lakeside arena. -- warm as ever. At

:28:01. > :28:10.capacity crowd, at complete sell-out on this opening day. He has six

:28:11. > :28:17.darts for that. O'Shea is back on 182. Double tend to level the set.

:28:18. > :28:21.It moved the wire. He will have three more darts when he returns.

:28:22. > :28:37.O'Shea will hold for a 140 ton. You can see Tony O'Shea struggling

:28:38. > :28:39.with the temperature. Williams applies The Heat to go back on level

:28:40. > :28:55.terms. Some of the other players watching

:28:56. > :29:04.on, there is Wesley Harms, seeded number five this year.

:29:05. > :29:12.They call him Sparky, a former electrician from the Netherlands. He

:29:13. > :29:22.is becoming a fixture here. And certainly somebody with a chance.

:29:23. > :29:28.Stephen Bunting is around, the 2014 champion, and the 2006 champion,

:29:29. > :29:37.Jelle Klaasen, he paid a visit here after his victory to go into the

:29:38. > :29:46.semifinals of the PDC Championship. Yes, those semifinals happening

:29:47. > :29:50.today. A few miles east of here. This is round one of the BDO, the

:29:51. > :29:59.first to three sets into the second round. Will it be this man, Tony

:30:00. > :30:02.O'Shea, a veteran of 14 previous Lakeside World Championships, or

:30:03. > :30:06.will it be Jim Williams, the seeded player? He is only playing his

:30:07. > :30:19.second match. O Shea is frustrated with his own

:30:20. > :30:26.darts at the moment, he is not quite firing. Inconsistent, isn't it? 61

:30:27. > :30:30.when he comes back would get that 2-1 advantage. All Williams could

:30:31. > :30:36.hope for is to get a decent score to apply a bit of pressure on that 61,

:30:37. > :30:37.and he can't do it. Tony O'Shea nicely poised to regain the

:30:38. > :30:58.advantage. Well there is the treble 20, so 18

:30:59. > :31:07.will leave tops. Good checkout, around 40, 50% mark, both these

:31:08. > :31:16.lads. That improves O'Shea's percentage, four out of 15 now.

:31:17. > :31:23.Anything over 50% they would bite your hand off for, but anything

:31:24. > :31:31.under 30 they are disappointed, and both players, currently their

:31:32. > :31:35.checkout percentage is under 30. A little growl of frustration from

:31:36. > :31:48.O'Shea as he took his darts out of the board. The Silverback in him

:31:49. > :31:53.talking. That's more like it. Hello. There it is. His first 180 of the

:31:54. > :32:03.tournament. Putting him in a very handy position. Nice reply. Nice

:32:04. > :32:17.cover on the 19th rural Mac from Jim Williams. Not on a finish, though --

:32:18. > :32:33.nice cover on the 19s. Back into the 19s, unerringly. Nicely poised.

:32:34. > :32:44.O'Shea could do with another one. Double 16 he needs. 88, just above.

:32:45. > :32:50.Yes. Once again we are going to a deciding leg. All going with the

:32:51. > :32:55.throw. O'Shea under pressure, now. Can't afford to lose another set.

:32:56. > :33:00.First to three sets. If he were to lose this lake then the spectre of a

:33:01. > :33:08.potential first-round defeat would become only two real.

:33:09. > :33:16.After reaching the final in 2013, Tony O'Shea lost in round one to

:33:17. > :33:20.Martin Adams 3-0, lost in a sudden-death leg to Scott Mitchell

:33:21. > :33:25.in the first round last year. Desperate not to make it a hat-trick

:33:26. > :33:33.of first-round defeats. But he must, you feel, win this lake. -- win this

:33:34. > :34:07.leg if he is to have a chance. Could do with a big score, here. And

:34:08. > :34:11.it's just 60. A lot of the players taking the opportunity to check out

:34:12. > :34:13.the atmosphere. They've all had a go on stage this morning to see how it

:34:14. > :34:32.looks. Was Lee Holmes, This is for the set, for a two set

:34:33. > :34:40.lead. It can't be done. But here he is applying massive pressure to Tony

:34:41. > :34:45.O'Shea. 142 to stay alive in this set, then. And he can't do it, now.

:34:46. > :34:52.And he will just have to hope that Williams' nerve cracks. And he's

:34:53. > :35:01.looked pretty handy in that respect. Double 16. Double eight. And he's

:35:02. > :35:11.got it, too sets ahead. And now O'Shea really has his sizeable back

:35:12. > :35:16.against the world -- against the wall. Williams with the two set

:35:17. > :35:28.lead. Williams with the advantage of throwing first in this third set.

:35:29. > :35:40.Here is a O'Shea staring at another first-round defeat. Two in the last

:35:41. > :35:47.two years, six in total for him. But he has also reached three finals. A

:35:48. > :35:49.look of desperation on his face. Struggled, I think, with conditions

:35:50. > :36:01.today, the warm up there on the stage. That's a solid 140.

:36:02. > :36:09.Checkout percentages, Williams UC has just got a marginal advantage.

:36:10. > :36:13.But he's got it when he's needed it, and that's given him the two set

:36:14. > :36:25.advantage. Both of those sets Williams won went

:36:26. > :36:29.to a deciding leg. And on these occasions did Tony O'Shea throw a

:36:30. > :36:42.dart for the set. Good dart, and again. Now he thinks. That's a

:36:43. > :36:51.sensible route. Still thinking. Treble 18 for double 18. This would

:36:52. > :36:59.be something. Close, very close. Now tops for O'Shea to take this leg

:37:00. > :37:02.against the throw. So important to O'Shea's chances of extricating

:37:03. > :37:15.himself from a very, very difficult position.

:37:16. > :37:26.If he can get on a little role then you just never know. Great cover

:37:27. > :37:34.shots from Williams, switching to the 19s. He's been like a metronome

:37:35. > :37:42.down there, hasn't he? Last five darts at treble 19 have all found

:37:43. > :37:46.green bit. Williams has effectively taken the throw by virtue of the

:37:47. > :37:58.previous visit, and he has not really capitalised, there.

:37:59. > :38:14.Bit of Downton Abbey, or a gorilla. Bit warm in that suit. He's got to

:38:15. > :38:21.be cheering for the Silverback, hasn't he? He's found a little bit

:38:22. > :38:26.of something better here, Tony O'Shea. The 120 checkout is very

:38:27. > :38:48.makeable. Well, 166 is not a finish. 170 is

:38:49. > :38:52.the biggest one and then there are a couple of bogey numbers you cannot

:38:53. > :39:02.take out in three darts. So 64 for O'Shea to go to a head. Great first

:39:03. > :39:10.start, leaving double eight. That should be handy. Oh, unlucky.

:39:11. > :39:21.Unlucky. Well, I ball 16, and this would hurt. -- double 16. O'Shea

:39:22. > :39:26.breathes again. Double four, got to take this. That should be a good

:39:27. > :39:34.marker. Too much of an adjustment. And tracks down the double two, and

:39:35. > :39:39.he cannot believe it. To level the set. Right in the middle of the bed.

:39:40. > :39:51.That's a big, big leg slipped away from O'Shea, he should have taken

:39:52. > :39:56.that. Straight back in the treble 20, Jim Williams has got a bit of

:39:57. > :40:00.swagger about him now. Deciding to go for the treble 19 with the third

:40:01. > :40:07.dart because of the lie of the first two. Darts aficionados know that, of

:40:08. > :40:08.course, they know about the cover shot, the switch down below, that's

:40:09. > :40:29.why they do it. He's always here, Jackie, over from

:40:30. > :40:33.Belgium. Great darts supporter. There are people who make this

:40:34. > :40:46.pilgrimage year after year and he's one of them.

:40:47. > :40:56.You were talking about bogey numbers and Williams is on one of them, no

:40:57. > :41:02.checkout on 165. But he will be back to look at 124, with Tony O'Shea

:41:03. > :41:11.back on 266, he needs a big score. He is getting one so far. Unlucky.

:41:12. > :41:16.So close to being a 180. Treble 18 would leave him bull's-eye.

:41:17. > :41:26.Bull's-eye for a 2-1 lead in this third set. Would have left him a leg

:41:27. > :41:30.away. 146 is big. And can't be done. Can't now be taken out. So Williams

:41:31. > :41:42.with a big opportunity to move to the brink of victory. Double eight.

:41:43. > :41:48.And takes it out. Only one more leg required. And he'll have a 3-0

:41:49. > :41:54.victory and a place in the second round. Quoted the 11-8 on favourite

:41:55. > :42:05.before this match began, Jim Williams.

:42:06. > :42:11.Almost a pick 'em match as far as the bookies were concerned but he

:42:12. > :42:16.has been solid. Straight back in the treble 20. Perhaps the scoreboard is

:42:17. > :42:29.freeing up his arm a little. He needs it to. If he doesn't hold onto

:42:30. > :42:33.his throw here, O'Shea, it's good night and thank you. Start the taxi.

:42:34. > :42:40.Whatever euphemism you care to use. Back in Stockport by tea-time. Think

:42:41. > :42:44.he'll be around for a little while yet. He likes to sample the

:42:45. > :42:52.atmosphere and get behind the microphone. He's actually remarkably

:42:53. > :42:59.good at it. He's got six darts from here because Williams is on no

:43:00. > :43:10.checkout. He would have hoped for more than that but 76 is makeable.

:43:11. > :43:16.Anxious times for Jill. OK, then, Tony. 25 fourball. Oh, he's hit the

:43:17. > :43:20.bull's-eye. Williams 141 for the match. Can't be

:43:21. > :43:50.done. So, double eight to stay alive. Jill

:43:51. > :43:58.enjoyed that. But Williams with the darts. That's a nice solid start. If

:43:59. > :43:59.he hits the times it's going to put O'Shea under big pressure to be

:44:00. > :44:17.getting huge numbers. Another set goes the distance. Will

:44:18. > :44:22.it go the same way as the first two? Will it go to Wales? Or can Tony

:44:23. > :44:28.O'Shea find something? Need to find the treble 20. The winner of this

:44:29. > :44:32.could potentially be heading towards a second round match against the

:44:33. > :44:41.Dutchman who we saw keeping an eye on form.

:44:42. > :44:44.Looking as though it's going to go the way of the Welshman at the

:44:45. > :45:01.moment. Good shooting. But so is this.

:45:02. > :45:10.That's one out of the bed. That was a bounce out. How unlucky is that?

:45:11. > :45:13.140 when he comes back. O'Shea, Wellcome he's looking at a very

:45:14. > :45:22.small target, trying to adjust to get the shred Paul 18.

:45:23. > :45:34.Match point again, another treble 20 four double ten for the match. What

:45:35. > :45:40.a way to do it. He has knocked out Tony O'Shea, one of Lakeside's true

:45:41. > :45:50.gentleman. A gracious loser, as you can see. Jim Williams, in only his

:45:51. > :45:57.second visit, he has produced the big performance that he knew he was

:45:58. > :46:02.capable of. Williams is through. Ladies and gentlemen, we say goodbye

:46:03. > :46:04.to Silverback, Tony O'Shea. Through to the next round, it is Jim

:46:05. > :46:38.Williams. He came into music by Queens of the

:46:39. > :46:42.Stone Age. Jim Williams wins, proving again that Lakeside is as

:46:43. > :46:46.predictable as your dress sense. We knew he was in with a big chance,

:46:47. > :46:55.but he still had to go and do it on the Lakeside stage. Brilliant stuff.

:46:56. > :47:02.Obviously he is pleased about that. Tony O'Shea did not score very well.

:47:03. > :47:09.The best darts see-through where the last three. He did not have to do a

:47:10. > :47:16.massive amount. When he needed to hit the doubles-mac, he did it. They

:47:17. > :47:21.seem to be struggling, high above the treble. Then roll. I do not know

:47:22. > :47:29.if it is nervous. I was disappointed. I thought it would be

:47:30. > :47:35.a higher standard. Lucky we have got a lot more games to come. Good for

:47:36. > :47:42.Jim to do it in front of a national audience. His nerves would have been

:47:43. > :47:46.all over the place. He will obviously be nervous, but he should

:47:47. > :47:51.not be that nervous. He has played for his country in the World Cup.

:47:52. > :47:55.Let's find out from the man himself. Come on, let's get you in here.

:47:56. > :48:01.Plenty of time to talk to the adoring masses. We said it was a

:48:02. > :48:07.coin toss before you went up, but this was you in front of a national

:48:08. > :48:13.audience on the BBC. How were they nervous when your work on music

:48:14. > :48:18.played. The first time I played, it was really tough. I did not feel

:48:19. > :48:26.nervous that time. I was not playing that well, what I thought, keep

:48:27. > :48:34.going. What was it like to win your first set? It must have been in your

:48:35. > :48:39.head, get off to a good start? I do not know. If I had missed that, I

:48:40. > :48:44.would have found it really tough. Even more so in the second set. We

:48:45. > :48:50.were saying, leave the amateurs aside for a second, you have got the

:48:51. > :48:56.clutch darts. If you missed this, it could have been 1-1. You must be

:48:57. > :49:00.happy? When the first two sets were like that, it was so tight. I found

:49:01. > :49:06.it really edgy and I scraped through. Obviously when you get the

:49:07. > :49:12.ton class finish, you will want to be watching that back a few hundred

:49:13. > :49:20.times today. This is lovely. What a way to do it. Treble 20, leaves you

:49:21. > :49:28.80. You know you have got one. How was that. I went on honeymoon with

:49:29. > :49:34.Natalie and we came back before Christmas. I have been playing

:49:35. > :49:40.rubbish, really rubbish. I played yesterday with Dean and my friend

:49:41. > :49:44.came up. Since then, I have felt better, so it has helped a lot.

:49:45. > :49:49.Bobby, aid means everything to get up there and win your first game

:49:50. > :49:54.like he did today? Your first victory, it is a lovely feeling. You

:49:55. > :50:03.can improve, obviously, you will have to to carry on, but if you keep

:50:04. > :50:06.going, you can win. Jim, what did Tony say to you at the end because

:50:07. > :50:13.we know he is one of the nicest guys in the sport? He is a gentleman. He

:50:14. > :50:21.is my hero. He wished me the best of luck. Fair play to him. He is a top

:50:22. > :50:26.man. I am sure we will steal him for the commentary box. Now talking with

:50:27. > :50:35.Rob. INAUDIBLE

:50:36. > :50:40.Tony, desperately disappointing. You said that form had been coming in

:50:41. > :50:43.the last couple of months. Probably the last performance, in the big

:50:44. > :50:50.shows that we do, I have beaten them all, Van Gerwen. That is the

:50:51. > :50:55.pressure of the Lakeside. The stage is like nowhere else. All the rules

:50:56. > :51:02.change. It is tough. Jim just said that you his heel. He said you're

:51:03. > :51:05.top man. I know you have heard it all before, but you have been such

:51:06. > :51:12.an ambassador for this sport. You are not finished yet? Trust me, I am

:51:13. > :51:17.not finished. I changed my darts about four months ago, slightly

:51:18. > :51:23.heavier. That is maybe affected the performance. What he's saying, that

:51:24. > :51:28.is the BDO. We are all pals. Maybe they will need to get a quick course

:51:29. > :51:33.of, I do not know what the word is, get some killer instinct. Maybe I

:51:34. > :51:38.need to change something and stop being so friendly with everybody.

:51:39. > :51:43.Maybe a change on the oche, but do not change in the bar, because

:51:44. > :51:46.you're a top man to have around. We are sorry you will not be in the

:51:47. > :51:52.second round. There are so many players coming through. That guy did

:51:53. > :51:58.not win a leg last year. He was distraught, but he has won some big

:51:59. > :52:01.tournaments. There is the proof. Our system is alive and kicking, and it

:52:02. > :52:08.is the proof. Colin, what a nice guy this is.

:52:09. > :52:24.Only on camera, off-camera he is terrible. The B word he was

:52:25. > :52:28.referring to was bats-mac. -- bats. His point, this is about the

:52:29. > :52:35.familiar faces and the relatively unknown. Expect anything to happen.

:52:36. > :52:44.You never know. It was a scrappy game, but this boy can go on. You

:52:45. > :52:48.make the stars here. Every darts player in the world, they came here

:52:49. > :52:54.and got up the ladder. You cannot say who is going to win, you do not

:52:55. > :53:00.know. They get up there and their darts go funny. They get nervous. We

:53:01. > :53:08.have another qualifier, but came to a attention to the ladies' draw. The

:53:09. > :53:12.best female players in the world. The brilliantly stashed in his

:53:13. > :53:19.honour hat-trick. If you were not with us 12 months ago, here is how

:53:20. > :53:27.she won 12 months ago. She is the reigning Lakeside world champion,

:53:28. > :53:35.the Lancashire rose, Lisa Ashton. Playing in her first Lakeside World

:53:36. > :53:42.Championship, it is her opponent. It is one of those intriguing contests,

:53:43. > :53:52.youth against experience. Double eight now. She had the chance. Just

:53:53. > :54:06.take your time. Double ten. It is they are. Treble 15, four double 18.

:54:07. > :54:26.Double 18 for the set, for Fallon. Yes. Double eight. Yes. The world

:54:27. > :54:35.arts champion, Lisa Ashton. -- darts. Can you hear me? There we go.

:54:36. > :54:40.Let's have a look at the ladies' draw at Frimley Green. Trina

:54:41. > :54:50.Gulliver, the golden girl, she takes on Dee Bateman. Lisa Ashton up in

:54:51. > :54:56.just a second. Anastasia Dobromyslova will be a threat. Casey

:54:57. > :55:03.Gallagher Jon Sopel as well. Lots of new blood coming through. Let's hear

:55:04. > :55:08.from Lisa Ashton before she takes to the Lakeside stage. She was speaking

:55:09. > :55:12.to Rob Walker. Here you are as defending champion

:55:13. > :55:17.again. Life must have changed a great deal at the first title, but

:55:18. > :55:22.what about last year? I have been really busy, lots of support, people

:55:23. > :55:25.coming to me, it has been brilliant. Do you feel less pressure or is the

:55:26. > :55:32.potential for a hat-trick increasing the tension? I have never really

:55:33. > :55:35.thought about it. I do not want to put myself under pressure, and start

:55:36. > :55:41.from scratch, and hopefully I can do the hat-trick. Paula Jacklin in the

:55:42. > :55:50.opening round. If you start as well as you did against Deta Hedman last

:55:51. > :55:54.year, you will be doing well. Is there the confidence to your game at

:55:55. > :56:00.the moment? Yes, I have been playing well. Hopefully I can carry on from

:56:01. > :56:04.where I left off last year. Not only have you been busy, but your two

:56:05. > :56:08.daughters have been busy, Danielle winning the world masters youth

:56:09. > :56:13.title, and Lindsay providing you with a granddaughter. I could not

:56:14. > :56:18.ask for an better Christmas present. She is beautiful. Did you have time

:56:19. > :56:24.off over Christmas to spend with the extended family? Yes, I took time

:56:25. > :56:29.off with the granddaughter and the rest of my family. After Christmas I

:56:30. > :56:34.got onto it for the Lakeside. What would it mean to you, you have

:56:35. > :56:40.claimed this mountain twice, to great acclaim in two wonderful and

:56:41. > :56:46.great sets of memories, but how special a third be? It would be

:56:47. > :56:50.brilliant, a dream come true. Only two other women have done the

:56:51. > :56:57.hat-trick. I would love to be in there with a hat-trick on my resume.

:56:58. > :57:02.Good luck. Thank you. Lisa Ashton has said the women pass my game

:57:03. > :57:07.alight. It has expanded, 16 aims at this stage of the tournament. She

:57:08. > :57:12.has brought competition. Trina does not have it easy, beta does not have

:57:13. > :57:22.it easy. Anastasia does not have it easy. She has been wonderful, the

:57:23. > :57:28.best lady's -- the Basque -- the best lady darts player I have seen.

:57:29. > :57:34.I like watching her. She can throw darts. There is no messing about.

:57:35. > :57:41.She gets on with the game. Last year? Final was marvellous. They are

:57:42. > :57:46.real darting family. For the last six years, I have always had a

:57:47. > :57:49.little tournament against her kid, who was this high. She has sprouted

:57:50. > :57:56.up and she is now the world youth champion, Danielle. It is a lovely

:57:57. > :58:02.story. I could not beat her when she was 11, I cannot beat her now. The

:58:03. > :58:11.practice together. They are family. She takes the kids with her when she

:58:12. > :58:16.can. Every tournament, she is on it. Paula Jacklin is maybe where Lisa

:58:17. > :58:20.was a few years ago, waiting to make that the breakthrough. She has her

:58:21. > :58:28.days in the sun, just not enough of them. She travels a lot but she does

:58:29. > :58:32.not win the tournaments. She goes to the quarterfinals, semifinals, sore

:58:33. > :58:40.points add up, but she has not won a big major. I have not seen her play

:58:41. > :58:45.on that stage very well. There is only one women's world title to win

:58:46. > :58:54.and it is rake that the Lakeside. Getting Lisa Ashton and Paula

:58:55. > :58:58.Jacklin on to that stage is Richard Ashdown. Now to get things started

:58:59. > :59:05.in the ladies World Championship at the home of darts, the Lakeside. We

:59:06. > :59:12.now introduced to the stage, our number one seed Andy Calder of 19

:59:13. > :59:19.world ranking titles. The reigning BDO and World Cup singles champion,

:59:20. > :59:20.the twice reigning Lakeside world champion, the Lancashire Rose, Lisa

:59:21. > :59:40.Ashton. MUSIC: "On a Mission" by Gabriella

:59:41. > :00:24.Cilmi. We now welcome to the stage a former

:00:25. > :00:26.Northern Ireland open champion, the Lincolnshire ladies County captain,

:00:27. > :01:43.Paula Jacklin! Will Lisa Ashton be three times a

:01:44. > :01:47.ladies champion? Paula Jacklin the first to stand in her wake, the

:01:48. > :01:56.pride of Lincolnshire. Let's go to the commentary box.

:01:57. > :02:01.Lisa Ashton the overwhelming favourite coming into this match,

:02:02. > :02:10.twice the world champion, hoping to make it a hat-trick this year. Paula

:02:11. > :02:15.Jacklin, today's opponent, 58, from Gainsborough. She has been here

:02:16. > :02:19.before, lost in the first round last year without winning a set. What has

:02:20. > :02:26.she got up her sleeve this afternoon? If you are new to darts,

:02:27. > :02:33.when this woman, the world champion, steps onto the key, you can expect

:02:34. > :02:39.fireworks. We have seen her win finals from two sets down, from six

:02:40. > :02:47.match darts down, 90 plus averages, massive checkouts, 156 last year. We

:02:48. > :02:52.have seen it all on fast forward. She is one of the quickest players

:02:53. > :02:58.around. It is England against England in the first match of the

:02:59. > :03:06.women's World Championship 2016. The best-of-3 sets. The first leg,

:03:07. > :03:14.Paula to throw first, came on! Paula Jacklin on the way. She sees

:03:15. > :03:23.the world through rose tinted spectacles! She gets us under way.

:03:24. > :03:30.She has the advantage of throwing first in the first leg. The first to

:03:31. > :03:39.three legs win the set. The best out of three sets win the match and wins

:03:40. > :03:47.a place in the quarterfinals. She has a lot to content with.

:03:48. > :04:00.The first two sets. This will be very quick. It is always quick when

:04:01. > :04:05.Lisa Ashton is on the oche, she does not hang around. She is

:04:06. > :04:15.unbelievable, she should be playing in the men's to be honest.

:04:16. > :04:25.A decent start from Paula. You could tell from her walk on she was not

:04:26. > :04:30.nervous, she is not fazed by playing on that stage. She lost to Aileen de

:04:31. > :04:45.Graaf last year, 2-0. Knocking on the door of a major

:04:46. > :04:53.final for most of last year, Paula. She came close on many occasions.

:04:54. > :04:59.She plays her county darts for Lincolnshire. Yes, Lancashire

:05:00. > :05:18.against Lincolnshire on the oche. It is Lisa who is on to a finish

:05:19. > :05:29.first. You would not put this past her, even in the first leg.

:05:30. > :05:32.These are the shots she will have to take out if she wants to stay in

:05:33. > :06:00.this match. That is way off. Pity our cameraman

:06:01. > :06:14.when Lisa Ashton is on the oche. She is so quick. She is first in. She

:06:15. > :06:27.was aiming for the 20 and she hit the treble. That is the one.

:06:28. > :06:35.Her two daughters also play Lancashire darts.

:06:36. > :06:49.It is a family affair. Danielle is the world youth champion.

:06:50. > :07:04.There she is. What a great prospect she is. The youth champion.

:07:05. > :07:08.I had some great days with Lancashire, I played with them for

:07:09. > :07:25.seven or eight years. We had a great team.

:07:26. > :07:33.Louise Peters watching on. She is in action later. With a nice smile.

:07:34. > :07:41.This is good. That is OK, it keeps her in it.

:07:42. > :08:14.Perfect. Very nice last dart. A couple of

:08:15. > :08:23.listeners. Paula has left 175. It is not an out shop. 170 is the biggest

:08:24. > :08:25.that you can take out in three darts, to trouble 20s and a

:08:26. > :08:56.bull's-eye. Bring on the men. The match is only

:08:57. > :09:00.two legs all, already a three digit checkout. -- two legs old. A nice

:09:01. > :09:38.start from Paula. In one match last year Lisa Ashton

:09:39. > :09:43.averaged 90 plus. There is nothing to separate them, it is just that

:09:44. > :09:51.Lisa is there getting a chance at the finish and taking it. The power

:09:52. > :09:54.of her scoring. Paula has not had a chance at a double your. But we are

:09:55. > :10:05.only two legs into the match. Some great players, those Lancashire

:10:06. > :10:31.men and women. Billy Leonard. He was a great player. But let's get

:10:32. > :10:55.back to the Sauber. -- oche. This is for the set. She needed the

:10:56. > :11:33.trouble to start, so Paula has a chance.

:11:34. > :11:47.For the first time, how are those doubles, Paula?

:11:48. > :12:05.Come on, Paula. A lot of people watching, a full house. Yes!

:12:06. > :12:47.In Mexico way! We will be seeing all of the fancy dress this week. Some

:12:48. > :13:05.brilliant turnouts. Her second score of 140 plus, Lisa.

:13:06. > :13:22.It is comeback time. That is her second score of 140

:13:23. > :13:34.plus, Paula. This is a decent match. She is still favourite to take the

:13:35. > :13:49.leg. There it is, one time, two 140s. Lucky.

:13:50. > :14:13.Averaging 85 in the set, hitting 50% of her doubles. She has come back on

:14:14. > :14:22.form, the defending champion. Paula has two step it up, look for

:14:23. > :14:38.the red part. They are enjoying themselves

:14:39. > :14:49.already. This is the first day of action. Yes, day one of Lakeside

:14:50. > :15:00.2016, match one in the women's World Championship. Have you got the buzz

:15:01. > :15:05.yet? I get it when I pull into the car park. And now I think everybody

:15:06. > :15:28.else has got it! Just to remind you, this is the

:15:29. > :15:30.women, not the man. There it is. A good marker, yes. Unlucky. It

:15:31. > :15:46.happens. She has thrown 12 darts, Lisa, she

:15:47. > :15:55.wants a when she comes to the oche. Make that a living because one of

:15:56. > :16:07.them fell out of the board. -- make that 11. That would have left double

:16:08. > :16:16.18. She is allowed to ask the referee. She will be back for double

:16:17. > :16:27.16. Paula is back on 276. She needs to rediscover her four kids after

:16:28. > :16:31.losing that first set. Two 16s. Yes. No problem for the defending

:16:32. > :16:45.champion. The second leg, Paula to throw first. Yes, set after said.

:16:46. > :16:51.She missed her first two doubles. She has only missed bulls eye since,

:16:52. > :17:02.and that was not by much. Metronomic. Here she goes again,

:17:03. > :17:07.here she goes again. They are all over the place. The 180 is coming up

:17:08. > :17:16.and it is the women that are showing them up. There is a great buzz

:17:17. > :17:22.around the arena when any leg of darts is started with a maximum. It

:17:23. > :17:30.means the nine darter is on. Not any more. Come on, Paula. Everybody

:17:31. > :17:51.wants you to steam it up. Not too bad, but Lisa on 261. She

:17:52. > :18:01.has effectively make a dart. It would have been 17s. She has made

:18:02. > :18:07.the advantage of scoring first, so Paula needs a big score. The first

:18:08. > :18:12.to two sets goes through to the quarterfinals. Not enough. Enjoying

:18:13. > :18:19.themselves. It is a finish, 144. Paula is still

:18:20. > :18:44.on 234. 179 is not a finish. Six darts, is

:18:45. > :18:53.she needs them. She will need them. That was a loose dart from Lisa, the

:18:54. > :18:59.world champion. 179, it is 66 for Lisa.

:19:00. > :19:21.She has left double 12. It is still the same side. And it is they are. I

:19:22. > :19:34.trip around the board, but it is in the double. Astonishing finishing

:19:35. > :19:37.from Lisa Ashton. She missed two darts in the first leg of the match

:19:38. > :19:40.and since then, she has said everything bar one shot at

:19:41. > :19:51.bull's-eye in the third leg to win it 3-0. I thought you were going to

:19:52. > :19:57.say everything but the kitchen door. It has been magic, it really has. I

:19:58. > :20:03.am sure everybody at home watching this will be so excited. Averaging

:20:04. > :20:10.85 with the checkout percentage of 63. This is in round one. You have

:20:11. > :20:12.got to feel for Paula. She has done nothing wrong. She has not had a

:20:13. > :20:38.look in. I think Lisa might have to go into

:20:39. > :20:45.demand's teams next year. -- into the men's teams. It is still panto

:20:46. > :20:54.season, just about. They have got high heels on as well, I can see.

:20:55. > :20:57.Lisa, they are behind you. My lord. Imagine sitting opposite him on The

:20:58. > :21:25.Train here. He would not get on it. Well, flamingos only stand on one

:21:26. > :21:35.leg. Lisa Ashton is only one leg away from winning this match. She

:21:36. > :21:52.has six darts, from 188, should she require them. That is a great start.

:21:53. > :22:05.Now I route shot for Paula. -- no out shot. Take it away. Will those

:22:06. > :22:11.be the last darts that Paula Jacklin throws at Lakeside 2016? Great

:22:12. > :22:15.scoring from the world champion, great finishing for the world --

:22:16. > :22:20.from the world champion. Speed of thought for Paula Jacklin, she did

:22:21. > :22:24.nothing wrong. Lisa Ashton is through to the quarterfinals and

:22:25. > :22:32.makes a bit of a statement. Fantastic. Come on, as she leaves

:22:33. > :22:37.the stage, Paula Jacklin. Through to the quarterfinals, the defending

:22:38. > :22:46.champion, Lisa Ashton. CHEERING

:22:47. > :22:55.Paula Jacklin is a wonderful character, a credit to the women's

:22:56. > :22:59.game, but Lisa Ashton on a hat-trick. Any player watching that

:23:00. > :23:04.backstage, as the commentator said, heard that message loud and clear.

:23:05. > :23:13.The lady is not for budging. She wants a third. She might just get

:23:14. > :23:18.it. Bobby George, you can take good averages, I think she was about 85,

:23:19. > :23:23.but she is doing what won her the title in the last two years. She

:23:24. > :23:31.took out 60% of her doubles? Unbelievable. 63%. That is good on

:23:32. > :23:37.any stage? She plays unbelievable darts for a lady. She did not score

:23:38. > :23:43.so well in that match, but she finishes well. That is her strongest

:23:44. > :23:50.point. If you play someone, and they get 83, 56, she is really dangerous

:23:51. > :23:58.on the shots out. It is lovely watching her play. She was a big

:23:59. > :24:02.favourite going into that game against Paula. Anastacia is

:24:03. > :24:06.backstage, Trina is backstage, details backstage. They are all

:24:07. > :24:14.watching that and going, it is Lisa, she is ready. They are playing on

:24:15. > :24:19.the tour so they are used to playing her. They know how she plays. She

:24:20. > :24:25.brings her form here, as she does all your rank, onto the stage. That

:24:26. > :24:34.is the difference. The other girls can playroom a good darts on the

:24:35. > :24:38.day, but she is more consistent. We have got Lisa Ashton backstage in

:24:39. > :24:43.the players' bar. If you could have heard that chat

:24:44. > :24:48.between Colin and Bobby, you would have been blushing. Great

:24:49. > :24:52.percentages on your doubles. You have laid down a declaration of

:24:53. > :24:57.intent. I am happy with the doubles this time. If I can get my schooling

:24:58. > :25:02.together I will be happy. I am trying for three. Bobby was saying

:25:03. > :25:07.that perhaps the scoring was not at the huge level we saw in the first

:25:08. > :25:15.round last year against ETA. But great to get that match out of the

:25:16. > :25:20.way. Yes, good to get the quarterfinal -- did to get into the

:25:21. > :25:26.quarterfinal. I will practice more. Before we have an orange juice, we

:25:27. > :25:35.want to give you the opportunity to see your final darts. Yes, three

:25:36. > :25:40.darts, not messing about. It did not look as though there were any nerves

:25:41. > :25:43.from you at all. There can always be a little flutter out there on that

:25:44. > :25:47.big stage. There is a little flutter, but you have got to keep it

:25:48. > :25:52.under control. I've got to concentrate on the next game now I

:25:53. > :25:57.have got my first one out of the way. You are here for a slice of

:25:58. > :26:00.history, and you're one step closer. We will see you in the

:26:01. > :26:06.quarterfinals. Thank you. Joining us on the balcony

:26:07. > :26:13.is a familiar face at the Lakeside, Chuck Norris. He has made the

:26:14. > :26:18.transition from the Ally Pally. Lisa Ashton has lifted the ladies game to

:26:19. > :26:23.another level. If you could bottle goes doubles, you would buy a few,

:26:24. > :26:35.wouldn't you? Yes, you would take it. She has done great for the

:26:36. > :26:41.women's' game. -- women's game. We have been delighted to see you go

:26:42. > :26:47.from the BDO to the PDC and make the quarterfinals. You may be kicking

:26:48. > :26:51.yourself that you're standing here are not getting ready for a

:26:52. > :26:57.semifinal tonight. Yes, but darts is darts. It is nice to be here, and a

:26:58. > :27:01.fantastic welcome back. It is a day off before I drive home. You cannot

:27:02. > :27:07.take it away from my opponent, he bashed me up in the last few legs. I

:27:08. > :27:15.ran out of energy. Let's get two predictions from you. First of all,

:27:16. > :27:20.the one that is easier. Anderson? An old Dutch final. They are both

:27:21. > :27:25.raiding their luck. I think it could be a Dutch title this year. You

:27:26. > :27:29.never know. Gary Somerset, years playing well. He is playing well in

:27:30. > :27:42.practice. Lewis as well, the best he has looked for months. It belongs to

:27:43. > :27:47.anybody. It is brilliant, it is wide open, very exciting. Were you going?

:27:48. > :27:54.If the same guys keep winning the tournament, it gets boring. The

:27:55. > :27:58.captain of the ship is Phil Taylor. It is nice to see other guys get

:27:59. > :28:07.through as well. You did extremely well. You had a nine darker. You got

:28:08. > :28:16.up to the quarterfinals. You did marvellous. I am proud of you. You

:28:17. > :28:22.will learn. You got knocked out last night, you could have played here

:28:23. > :28:28.today. It is a lot more difficult. More players to choose from. Jim

:28:29. > :28:35.Williams was one of my outside tapes. He produced the goods today.

:28:36. > :28:40.He has lots of confidence. I have come down to watch Darryl Fitton

:28:41. > :28:46.today. He deserves one. He is brilliant, I love him. The pressure

:28:47. > :28:51.is on Glenn Durrant. The banter that he and Jim Williams have together,

:28:52. > :28:58.years through, Glen has got to do it. There will be some names we have

:28:59. > :29:04.not spoke about. Jeff Smith flew through last year. He was brilliant.

:29:05. > :29:08.He just fell off the rails against Scott Mitchell. You would not have

:29:09. > :29:18.predicted that. Do you remember your debut. My debut was against Steve

:29:19. > :29:25.West. I think he won the second leg. I love you, Steve. What is it like

:29:26. > :29:31.waiting in that famous area, because we have got a New Zealander coming

:29:32. > :29:37.up next. It brought back all the memories for me, when I was waiting

:29:38. > :29:43.to go on stage the other night, before Christmas. You get

:29:44. > :29:46.butterflies. Once you are up there, you're working. We are proud of you,

:29:47. > :29:52.thank you for joining us. The debutante foreign news -- the

:29:53. > :29:57.debutante for New Zealand is none other than Craig Caldwell. He is

:29:58. > :30:02.going to take on Alan Soutar. Craig has come all the way from New

:30:03. > :30:07.Zealand. He has been talking with Rob Walker.

:30:08. > :30:11.How special is it to be amongst the small number of New Zealanders who

:30:12. > :30:21.have made it? It is a privilege to be part of it.

:30:22. > :30:30.Some of my idols growing up have been here. Here I am now. You were

:30:31. > :30:36.watching Mike Day on the Internet last year, has he defended tips on

:30:37. > :30:40.how to conduct yourself amongst the cauldron noise and sense of

:30:41. > :30:46.anticipation? He gave me a bit of advice, he loved it. He has got

:30:47. > :30:51.nothing but good memories, he speaks very highly of the tournament. I

:30:52. > :30:56.have found that already. How many days ago did you arrive? There is

:30:57. > :31:05.the fact of jet lag, are you feeling OK? I feel good, I was here five or

:31:06. > :31:08.six days before. I have found it is about the right time to get over the

:31:09. > :31:15.jet lag, hopefully I have got it right again. What can we expect by

:31:16. > :31:20.way of a walk on? Are you modest, or do you get the crowd fired up?

:31:21. > :31:24.Sometimes I fire them up, but I might be modest, with it being my

:31:25. > :31:30.first time. We will see what happens! The best of luck, you have

:31:31. > :31:34.travelled a long way to be here, the crowd will give you a brilliant

:31:35. > :31:38.reception, good luck. I always shudder when we get anybody

:31:39. > :31:46.from New Zealand or Australia because there have been some amazing

:31:47. > :31:53.days. Tony fleet comes to mind are. Don't mention that! Alan Soutar has

:31:54. > :32:02.been here once before, he did not get through. He will want to put

:32:03. > :32:06.that right. He knows what it is like on other stages to beat the big

:32:07. > :32:09.names, people want to get stuck in. He has got to get through a

:32:10. > :32:18.qualifier first, against Craig Caldwell. Last year, we were talking

:32:19. > :32:23.about Jeff Smith coming through the qualifiers, Seigo Asada, he is back

:32:24. > :32:30.again, from Japan. He is amazing. Looking forward to that. That is

:32:31. > :32:32.what I like, we cannot tell the audience a million encyclopaedic

:32:33. > :32:41.things about some of the qualifiers, but it is always an adventure. He is

:32:42. > :32:44.quite a steady player. The guy from New Zealand, I do not know much

:32:45. > :32:50.about him, I would not go that far to watch him. It is a long way to

:32:51. > :32:57.play a game of darts, so I hope he plays well and enjoys himself. The

:32:58. > :33:04.Scottish guy is quite tidy. It is easy to know which one is which! The

:33:05. > :33:08.New Zealanders have done quite well around these parts recently. Winning

:33:09. > :33:18.for the first time the Rugby World Cup outside of their own nation.

:33:19. > :33:26.Maybe he will continue it coming. No haka fondue, the stage will

:33:27. > :33:30.collapse! One player making his debut, one here for just the second

:33:31. > :33:36.time. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the

:33:37. > :33:39.2016 Lakeside World Championship, and we now introduce a preliminary

:33:40. > :33:48.round match here at the home of well darts, the Lakeside! We welcome to

:33:49. > :33:50.the stage our New Zealand regional qualifier, all the way from

:33:51. > :34:47.Wellington, it is Craig Caldwell! We now bring to the stage a man that

:34:48. > :34:53.came through the BDO World Championship qualifiers, a former

:34:54. > :34:54.World Cup team winner for his country of Scotland, it is Alan

:34:55. > :35:45.Soutar! It is -- is Craig Caldwell the

:35:46. > :35:49.all-black going back? It means just as much to Alan Soutar. Let's go

:35:50. > :35:58.back to the commentary box. They are vying for a first-round

:35:59. > :36:03.place, the winner will play the defending champion, Scott Mitchell.

:36:04. > :36:12.Craig Caldwell has come a long way, the New Zealander. 42 years old, he

:36:13. > :36:17.has been the man in the kiwi sport, he heads the BDO New Zealand

:36:18. > :36:22.regional rankings, he has had four ranking title victories this year,

:36:23. > :36:28.three times a runner-up, and played in the PDC world Series, losing to

:36:29. > :36:34.James Wade, and playing in Perth and Auckland against Phil Taylor. Alan

:36:35. > :36:40.Soutar, 37, five years the Junior, loving the trousers. Scottish

:36:41. > :36:45.qualifier from Arbroath. He went to the last 32 in 2011, he has never

:36:46. > :36:51.won a ranking title but qualified through the play-offs in Hull and

:36:52. > :36:52.beat the European Cup singles champion David Concannon from

:36:53. > :37:07.Ireland in the final. Alan Soutar with the darts. The

:37:08. > :37:14.first to three takes the set, the first to three sets take the match.

:37:15. > :37:24.What a start. Off the wire. Does not help.

:37:25. > :37:41.Unlucky as well the Craig Caldwell. One apiece. Dominated the kiwi game

:37:42. > :37:46.with Kobe Harris in the last year. Alan Soutar, the pride of Scotland,

:37:47. > :37:56.we have had Scottish champions in the past, Les Wallace in 97, and who

:37:57. > :38:01.can forget Jockey Wilson, 82 and 89? Alan Soutar has taken advantage,

:38:02. > :38:07.hundred and 20 and a ton in the first six darts. He has got the

:38:08. > :38:13.Tartan on, going to the hoedown tonight. Not being fazed by the

:38:14. > :38:21.pressure of being on the big stage in front of the TV cameras.

:38:22. > :38:34.This can be done. After nine darts! He will still be coming back after

:38:35. > :38:41.this one as well. No checkout for Alan Soutar. For Craig Caldwell,

:38:42. > :38:53.rather. Alan Soutar did not need the final three. A nice cover shot.

:38:54. > :39:06.A nice solid start from Alan Soutar. Still struggling, Craig Caldwell.

:39:07. > :39:21.The Scottish international. He has got support in the crowd. They are

:39:22. > :39:36.happy with that. That is a good start. I was going to

:39:37. > :39:42.say Craig has not quite settled in, but that will make him feel better.

:39:43. > :39:52.I like his style, though, he pushes them through the air. Similar as

:39:53. > :39:59.well. The Scots are happy. As well they might be. The early stages of

:40:00. > :40:12.the match, but Alan Soutar averaging over 96 so far.

:40:13. > :40:24.His nickname is Souts. That took some thinking! I would have thought

:40:25. > :40:30.it would have been Trousers! Craig Caldwell's ranking stands at 36. He

:40:31. > :40:35.was the favourite with the bookies, quoted of the 9-4 on the favourite

:40:36. > :40:39.for the match, but Alan Soutar does not care about that, he is getting

:40:40. > :40:47.on with doing what he knows he can do.

:40:48. > :41:04.Craig Caldwell with -- will come back with time on his side, but Alan

:41:05. > :41:22.Soutar putting pressure on. A tough double, nobody likes that

:41:23. > :41:27.one, but straight at it, and the big fella back on level terms. It is

:41:28. > :41:35.turning out to be a good match, this, the early stages. The first

:41:36. > :41:41.match we commentated on was a bit scrappy, Jim Williams beating Tony

:41:42. > :41:45.O'Shea. This has a more pleasing look to it. Souts' average up in

:41:46. > :42:05.three figures. The first attempt at these

:42:06. > :42:13.championships the Craig Caldwell. Blocked the bed. Seven guys have won

:42:14. > :42:20.this tournament at the first try. Starting off with Leighton Rees in

:42:21. > :42:27.1978. A great mate of mine, I miss him so much. Another of those who

:42:28. > :42:34.won at the first attempt, Jelle Klaasen. He was here or hereabouts

:42:35. > :42:38.last night, he has his own big semifinal to look forward to

:42:39. > :42:50.tonight. He won the first one, in the heart of the Midlands. Alan

:42:51. > :42:56.Soutar's girlfriend. Amanda. Invoking a bit of divine

:42:57. > :42:58.intervention, maybe. There is Cathy, she has come across from New Zealand

:42:59. > :43:15.with Craig. It is a long walk! That is handy, but Craig Caldwell

:43:16. > :43:37.has 102 to take the lead against the darts.

:43:38. > :43:52.Now then, a chance here for Craig Caldwell. There it is. That is

:43:53. > :43:56.against the throw. Craig Caldwell seizes the advantage in this opening

:43:57. > :44:05.set and now has the darts to close it out. Also get some applause from

:44:06. > :44:09.his partner. The fifth kiwi to have made his way across to play in these

:44:10. > :44:22.championships. Mike day a couple of times. Peter Hunt back in the 90s,

:44:23. > :44:27.he played four times. The winner of this will be looking to take a place

:44:28. > :44:37.against Scott Mitchell, I don't doubt he is watching somewhere. He

:44:38. > :44:43.has been moving around. Taking the air and taking all the atmosphere.

:44:44. > :44:47.He has been a busy boy with the exhibitions, he reckons he has done

:44:48. > :44:54.65 or thereabouts, as well as running his farm. He bought himself

:44:55. > :45:13.a tractor. I think he bought himself a very good tractor!

:45:14. > :45:27.She has yet to play in the ladies', she is going to be in action later

:45:28. > :45:32.on. I saw her practising in the hotel last night and she almost got

:45:33. > :45:41.a nine darker, Fallon Sherrock. She missed it. Well, we will be keeping

:45:42. > :45:49.our eyes open. I must confess, I was in the bar momentarily, all in the

:45:50. > :46:00.interests of research. That is going to help, yes. 110, four Soutar. It

:46:01. > :46:12.puts the pressure on. A great first dart. How about that? How about

:46:13. > :46:21.that? That makes it 2-2, in the opening set. Soutar has the darts.

:46:22. > :46:33.Advantage Scotland. It is a good match. It just shows you. He is from

:46:34. > :46:38.New Zealand. Arbroath is a long way, but not quite in the same league. I

:46:39. > :46:47.was going to say, maybe just a few hundred miles. The second appearance

:46:48. > :46:53.at these championships for Alan Soutar, Scottish international from

:46:54. > :47:06.2011. That is a bad here day. Yes, he runs the Angus darts Academy now,

:47:07. > :47:09.since 2012. He is a good player. He has 400 youth players in the

:47:10. > :47:18.Academy. Putting back into the sport. Not only a good player, but a

:47:19. > :47:31.good tutor. Good darts. That is excellent. Now check out, though.

:47:32. > :47:47.No, not on 176. He has got six darts. Three of them. Six from here,

:47:48. > :47:55.for the Scotsman. One, two. 56 left. That leaves him double talk. He

:47:56. > :47:59.looks to the Manor born on the stage. That was a really impressive

:48:00. > :48:08.setup. Coldwell can do no more than try and take a big number. --

:48:09. > :48:17.Caldwell. Soutar, tops for the opening set. Steady yourself, lad.

:48:18. > :48:24.How about that again? Years finishing well. The roar up there on

:48:25. > :48:31.the stage. That is to his travelling band of supporters. He is loving it.

:48:32. > :48:41.He has brought the clan with him as well. They are loving it. First

:48:42. > :48:57.blood to Alan Soutar, the 37-year-old Scottish qualifier.

:48:58. > :49:15.Carry on like this and it will be a great match. Right down to the wire.

:49:16. > :49:44.It has got the makings, hasn't it? Yes, really putting those darts

:49:45. > :49:54.where he wants them. I finish 4161. -- a finish for 161. All Alan can do

:49:55. > :50:08.now is hope. Caldwell has lots of time, because Soutar is way back on

:50:09. > :50:18.261. 12 Alison is -- 12 darts throwing and he is on 62. He wants

:50:19. > :50:36.double 16, treble ten. Double 16 with this dart. Yes. Holding his

:50:37. > :50:51.throw, nice checkout. A 15 darker. -- darter. It is a good match this.

:50:52. > :51:16.Solid again from Caldwell, peppering the treble 20.

:51:17. > :51:23.Having to make an adjustment, coming down with a really good cover shot.

:51:24. > :51:37.Ross Montgomery, another Scots men in the crowd, watching on. There he

:51:38. > :51:45.is. Cherishing ambitions of his own and realising he is on camera as

:51:46. > :51:53.well. He's a great player. Soutar needs a big hit. Over 100 points

:51:54. > :52:02.adrift, this is handy. Another would be ideal. The first maximum of the

:52:03. > :52:11.match, and what a time to do it. You could not place them together.

:52:12. > :52:16.Soutar coming back with 106 to square the match. That 180 was

:52:17. > :52:35.perfect and timing. Can Soutar finish it? That is handy. Treble 20.

:52:36. > :52:44.Still a chance. Treble 18, bulls side. Unlucky. Double four four

:52:45. > :52:49.Soutar. That is to square of the second set. His supporters hold

:52:50. > :52:55.their hands and hope, living every moment with him. Double four,

:52:56. > :53:09.getting closer. Just the wrong side of the wire. It clipped the barrel.

:53:10. > :53:22.And pressure. Soutar on four. Double two. He has got to get this, so

:53:23. > :53:29.important that you does not lose his throw. That makes it harder. It is

:53:30. > :53:45.not the best double on the board, double two. That is the shot. 2-0.

:53:46. > :53:57.He lost the first set to Soutar, but Caldwell is right back in this

:53:58. > :54:02.match. Being done. -- ding dong. That is the sort of form that has

:54:03. > :54:08.served him well. He has come from down under as the man on form. That

:54:09. > :54:25.is the second maximum. That one is not and under. -- an up and under.

:54:26. > :54:43.He is hitting them now. And another, and another. Back-to-back 180s. At

:54:44. > :54:51.nine dart finish. Can he do it? Wolfie almost did last year. Just

:54:52. > :54:59.the wrong side of the wire, and the pantomime brewing. It was a great

:55:00. > :55:12.effort. The main thing now, finish it off. He is going well now, Tony.

:55:13. > :55:17.It is the first time he has smiled. I wonder if he can play rugby. He

:55:18. > :55:31.looks as though he might have done, one time, he is a big man. How many

:55:32. > :55:45.times have we seen that? 20 would have left double top, and you hit

:55:46. > :55:57.the treble. It is double top. He threw well. He needed the treble 20,

:55:58. > :56:06.and it away. Now back on level terms. The checkout percentage of

:56:07. > :56:13.Soutar is pretty extraordinary. -- Caldwell. They did this, 71%. If he

:56:14. > :56:27.keeps that up, he will be difficult to beat. Less than 30%, not so

:56:28. > :56:33.clever, 40-60, quite good. That was a really good effort. If you are

:56:34. > :56:40.just joining us, there has been no nine darker in the BDO World

:56:41. > :56:58.Championships since Polly May 19 90. And I called it. Brilliantly, no

:56:59. > :57:08.doubt. -- since Paul Lim in 1990. He was out golfing in the afternoon. He

:57:09. > :57:16.took the money from me. Ted Hankey is here. I saw him wandering around

:57:17. > :57:23.the tell, muttering and groaning about the fact he has been quoted as

:57:24. > :57:30.80-1 with the bookies. I think he might have had a sniff. It was a big

:57:31. > :57:36.sniff. He said, I am going to win. Ted Hankey is one of the characters.

:57:37. > :57:44.Yes, we will have to move the air conditioning, though. You can say

:57:45. > :57:57.that. Here we go, treble 20. The bull's-eye. So, Caldwell to take

:57:58. > :58:12.this opening leg against the darts who is -- against the darts. Superb.

:58:13. > :58:18.That hurts Soutar. Well, we have certainly found some talent. The big

:58:19. > :58:34.man is getting the big scores. He is getting the big as it shots. -- big

:58:35. > :58:40.out shots. That will make the checkout percentage even better. He

:58:41. > :58:48.has got 75% now. He will take some beating. He looks in the zone. The

:58:49. > :58:50.overall averages are not what they were. Soutar has gone off the boil

:58:51. > :58:58.little. A couple of loose darts in the

:58:59. > :59:18.meantime. I wonder how long Craig has actually

:59:19. > :59:21.been over here. The old jet is certainly a factor when you start

:59:22. > :59:25.travelling around the world, I know from gruesome personal experience.

:59:26. > :59:41.It is some journey, though. The last time I was there, they had

:59:42. > :59:51.to turn around, the engine was on fire. Do not see that. Yes. Soutar

:59:52. > :59:55.needs to get back quickly. He needs to break back. That would really

:59:56. > :00:15.help, he needed that treble. He is not on a finish.

:00:16. > :00:30.The Scottish flag on his dart. This altar.

:00:31. > :00:44.Who we go. Not now. A chance to Craig Caldwell. Shanghai is what is

:00:45. > :00:55.required, trouble, single and double. It is not great, restricted

:00:56. > :01:03.view, but he has found it. By the width of a wire. Unluckily. A chance

:01:04. > :01:17.which has to be taken by Alan Soutar. He has done it. It makes it

:01:18. > :01:28.all square. He got away with that a bit. They know this first dart at

:01:29. > :01:37.20, then in it goes. He says, yes, I can do it! What a difference a dark

:01:38. > :01:55.makes. Young and old. They are all loving it.

:01:56. > :02:00.Having to switch and doing so beautifully once more. A cracking

:02:01. > :02:21.cover shot from Alan Soutar. He has got the advantage of this

:02:22. > :02:32.throw, and he has made it count. He has left a finish.

:02:33. > :02:44.It is a good response, this is a good leg.

:02:45. > :02:59.Unlucky. Every chance for Craig Caldwell. A great first dart.

:03:00. > :03:14.A valiant attempt. Swings and roundabouts. It is all happening.

:03:15. > :03:23.Look at the pain they are going through. Can he do it? He has bust!

:03:24. > :03:42.He went for three, he hit 19. Yes! Nerves from Alan Soutar. Craig

:03:43. > :03:49.Caldwell has got the bit between his teeth. That is the break of the

:03:50. > :03:57.throw. Now he will be throwing with the darts to make this 2-1 in his

:03:58. > :04:04.advantage. Alan Soutar having to compose himself and put that behind

:04:05. > :04:18.him. A bit of nervousness. Creeping ever closer.

:04:19. > :04:24.Craig Caldwell's Lakeside debut. Looking to make it a happy

:04:25. > :04:40.introduction. The crowd giving them the best of

:04:41. > :05:01.order. Yes! It is a maximum. That is his third, it has put him on

:05:02. > :05:06.a finish. It is what Keith Beller did to win in 1983, he took the

:05:07. > :05:12.title at the first attempt. He cannot replicate it, but he has a

:05:13. > :05:20.lot of time on his side. What a cracker.

:05:21. > :05:31.We know they have got some talent in Australia and New Zealand.

:05:32. > :05:46.That puts him in control of the match, potentially. Alan Soutar

:05:47. > :05:53.could not clear it out, and the man who has travelled 12,000 miles or

:05:54. > :06:01.more is now in a strong position. He is with the darts in what could turn

:06:02. > :06:08.out to be the final set. Well said. It has been magic, I have loved it,

:06:09. > :06:13.have you? A good game. Interesting, the way it has turned around,

:06:14. > :06:16.because Alan Soutar started impressively, but the tension has

:06:17. > :06:25.been palpable in the last few legs. It is a result of Craig Caldwell

:06:26. > :06:27.cranking up the pressure. Still eight out of 13, a 62% check out

:06:28. > :06:44.rate, for the big kiwi. A nice response. It puts Alan Soutar

:06:45. > :07:10.on a finish. Alan Soutar is in a great position.

:07:11. > :07:21.He can take this against the throw. This is important. If he can put

:07:22. > :07:40.this one away... On the wire! OK, Craig, can you do it?

:07:41. > :07:58.That would have been to have taken it against the throw. Craig Caldwell

:07:59. > :08:39.has made a hash of this. What a last dart that was, he needed

:08:40. > :08:58.it. Nobody likes being up on 11. -- double 1. He has blocked it.

:08:59. > :09:14.Gary Caldwell has lost his momentum. -- Craig Caldwell. It is slipping by

:09:15. > :09:19.a little. Alan Soutar needs to capitalise. Excellent 19th. He is

:09:20. > :09:38.doing precisely that. It is a tight match. Scott will take

:09:39. > :10:22.that. -- the Scot. It has hit the wire! What a dark!

:10:23. > :11:34.How close can you get? Sliding in off the barrel of his

:11:35. > :11:47.first one to go ahead. What a dart it was. The first one was ideal as a

:11:48. > :11:54.marker. Andy Fordham is in the house, I am told. A lovely fella.

:11:55. > :12:08.Back throwing competitively. And a former champion. The old Viking.

:12:09. > :12:28.He loved it. He knew how important it was.

:12:29. > :12:36.Andy Fordham the centre of attention with the crowd. A great man. And a

:12:37. > :13:27.great friend. He is a nice fella. Trying to stay in the match now.

:13:28. > :13:31.Craig Caldwell is one leg away from 3-1 and a place in the first round

:13:32. > :13:34.proper and a much against the defending champion Scott Mitchell.

:13:35. > :14:00.He has lasted the pace a lot better. Maybe he should have switched away

:14:01. > :14:01.from the 20 there. His route towards the treble partially dropped --

:14:02. > :14:19.blocked. I think you are right. Alan Soutar has to win this leg to

:14:20. > :14:28.keep the match alive. He is going the right way about it. His second

:14:29. > :14:37.maximum. Not on a finish, that he is in a good position.

:14:38. > :14:56.It glanced off the barrel. A bit unlucky with the last dart.

:14:57. > :15:10.The treble remains elusive. Two trebles would be handy.

:15:11. > :15:22.He needs to get this finish. That is not what he required, he needed 14

:15:23. > :15:34.for the bull's-eye and he gets treble in 11. 15 would leave him on

:15:35. > :15:47.double 8. Craig Caldwell, 76 for the match.

:15:48. > :16:02.And it is they are. What a match you have seen. Absolutely fantastic. New

:16:03. > :16:09.Zealand and Scotland, giving it their all. New Zealand, you did your

:16:10. > :16:15.country proud. Quality finishing, that was the difference between

:16:16. > :16:21.them, and Craig Caldwell takes his place in the first round, where he

:16:22. > :16:25.will face Scott Mitchell. Ladies and gentlemen, show your appreciation as

:16:26. > :16:30.they leave the stage, Scotland's Alan Soutar, and through to the

:16:31. > :16:33.first round proper, the man from New Zealand, Craig Caldwell.

:16:34. > :16:57.APPLAUSE Every single mile travelled, every

:16:58. > :17:01.minute of sleep last, if they are upon hour on the practice board has

:17:02. > :17:13.been worth it. New Zealander Craig Caldwell has won on his debut. His

:17:14. > :17:23.debut at the legendary Lakeside. Bobby George, an average of 91.2.

:17:24. > :17:30.Our first nine dart average just shy of 100. These debutants always

:17:31. > :17:34.struggle! He played well. Soutar played well at the beginning of the

:17:35. > :17:39.match but he died off a little bit. The New Zealander came back

:17:40. > :17:42.stronger. His finishing was great. In the last set, he took over, but

:17:43. > :17:51.he played really well. Powerful darts. He did not think about it, he

:17:52. > :17:57.got on with the game. We never think we are going to get civil darts into

:17:58. > :18:04.a nine darter with the New Zealander. I know. Can you imagine

:18:05. > :18:16.that? He was a bit ropey up to that. It is a shame he did not get it. We

:18:17. > :18:21.only saw a few sets. Four sets. As far as debuts go, it was red up

:18:22. > :18:26.there. There are still 40 men left in this tournament so anything north

:18:27. > :18:33.of 90 is impressive. It is a shorter format. As it goes on, it will get

:18:34. > :18:39.longer. They will settle more. We will see the averages go up. He did

:18:40. > :18:45.extremely well for the first time. Craig Caldwell, qualifier from New

:18:46. > :18:50.Zealand. Scott Mitchell will be thinking this is a good draw him, he

:18:51. > :18:55.will be the big favourite, whoever gets through. But he will be

:18:56. > :19:03.thinking, if he gets a few points better, I could be in trouble. He

:19:04. > :19:08.will be thinking, I want my mum. Rob Walker is talking to Craig Caldwell.

:19:09. > :19:11.From the other side of the world, Craig Caldwell has come here and

:19:12. > :19:16.smashed his Lakeside debut. There was barely a hint of nerves, that

:19:17. > :19:22.was class. It might not have showed on the outside but great to get that

:19:23. > :19:26.one out of the way. How much did you enjoy the occasion? Your checkouts

:19:27. > :19:31.were good, the average was top quality. It led like you were

:19:32. > :19:38.thriving, did you enjoy it? I loved it. The crowd was fantastic. What a

:19:39. > :19:42.great result. Alan is a great guy. I feel sorry for him. There can only

:19:43. > :19:49.be one winner and I am glad I played well. We will give you the

:19:50. > :19:52.opportunity to have a look at your final darts. This is a moment you

:19:53. > :19:55.would have dreamt of, surely. Last year you were watching your

:19:56. > :20:06.compatriot on the Internet. This is you finishing in style. As you say,

:20:07. > :20:11.I have got Scott now. It is another game, but we both have three darts

:20:12. > :20:15.in hand. Who knows? You must think you have a great chance against the

:20:16. > :20:20.defending champion? If I can bring my New Zealand foreign to the stage,

:20:21. > :20:23.who knows? You have had a gigantic journey to get here and there could

:20:24. > :20:27.be more instalments of dramatic come. Get some sleep tonight and we

:20:28. > :20:33.will see you for the big one against Scotty Dog. Some, thank you. Have a

:20:34. > :20:43.couple of sleeping tablets? I love the Lakeside. Dear. I think Rob made

:20:44. > :20:48.a good point. He was watching on the Internet 12 months ago. It is the

:20:49. > :20:53.biggest day of his career. Watching your mate and coming here next year,

:20:54. > :20:58.you cannot get better than that. It is a long way to come for the first

:20:59. > :21:01.round. I am pleased he has got through, he deserves it. The next

:21:02. > :21:11.game of the afternoon session, it is remarkable. Dennis Harbour and

:21:12. > :21:15.Darryl Fitton. It is his 14th consecutive appearance at the

:21:16. > :21:20.Lakeside. It is a roller-coaster for him. Either he goes out in the last

:21:21. > :21:25.right -- either he goes out in the first round or he gets to the last

:21:26. > :21:32.eight. Let's see what sort of frame of mind he is in. I went to watch 20

:21:33. > :21:35.O'Shea play and I thought, I want some of this myself. I love the

:21:36. > :21:41.atmosphere. I have been universe ends. Two famous semifinals against

:21:42. > :21:47.Barney and that classic against your best mate, Tony. Really feel like

:21:48. > :21:51.they were a long time ago? I can remember a games for different

:21:52. > :21:56.reasons. Very difficult playing your friend. I still want to get the

:21:57. > :22:02.again. I want to win the tournament, that is why I keep coming back. Does

:22:03. > :22:06.it ever get a little bit less special, or do you always get the

:22:07. > :22:10.butterflies in that sense of anticipation, irrespective of how

:22:11. > :22:17.many years it has been? I remember talking to someone a couple of years

:22:18. > :22:21.ago. They said, when do you get the buzz, it happens when I drive into

:22:22. > :22:26.the Lakeside. The hairs on my neck stand up. No change yesterday, it is

:22:27. > :22:29.a great feeling. With all your experience, what is your tactics

:22:30. > :22:33.over the Christmas period? Do you take a few days off, do the normal

:22:34. > :22:40.socialising, or do you get yourself prepared? I did a lot of cooking

:22:41. > :22:46.this year, myself. I had Christmas at home, relaxing as much as I can.

:22:47. > :22:49.I have been really busy this year. I relaxed a bit too much because it

:22:50. > :22:55.was hard to find the motivation to get back to practising again. Last

:22:56. > :23:01.week I did five hours a day for about four base. It has come back, I

:23:02. > :23:07.think. I feel confident. It sounds like he is ready for action, the

:23:08. > :23:11.best of luck. Thank you. We love him, he is taking on Dennis Harbour,

:23:12. > :23:16.who has been round the block more times than a stray dog. In 1985,

:23:17. > :23:21.Dennis Taylor on the black bull final against Steve Davies. Barry

:23:22. > :23:26.McGuigan became a world champion at Loftus Road. And Dennis Harbour made

:23:27. > :23:36.his television debut. Bobby, years that old you know him. He has been

:23:37. > :23:43.around for ages. He beat James Wade. That was a few years ago. That is

:23:44. > :23:47.when I remember him, 2003. I would have been watching back home in my

:23:48. > :23:52.Superman pyjamas. Hebe James Wade and I think he might have beat

:23:53. > :23:58.Mervyn King that year. I think he got beat by Mervyn King. You could

:23:59. > :24:04.be right. He has been around a long while. Here's a very slow player.

:24:05. > :24:08.That is a nice way to it, Bobby. Darryl is not that fast, but Harbour

:24:09. > :24:15.is very slow. You could call that deliberate. That is the way he

:24:16. > :24:19.throws. Boring, really. He is a boring sort of player. I like them

:24:20. > :24:27.to get on with it. You watching, you will see. He might have speeded up

:24:28. > :24:31.in his old age. If that has not sold it to you, nothing will.

:24:32. > :24:37.Unbelievable. Take a couple of sleeping tablets and we will see you

:24:38. > :24:42.on the other side of this. This is Richard Ashdown. This is the 2016

:24:43. > :24:45.Lakeside World Championship, and we are here that the home of world

:24:46. > :24:52.darts, the Lakeside. CHEERING

:24:53. > :24:59.We now welcome to the stage of former British Open, Dutch open and

:25:00. > :25:03.Masters champion. At Wise Lakeside World Championship semifinalist, it

:25:04. > :26:04.is the Dazzler, Darryl Fitton. Now, to the stage, the reigning

:26:05. > :26:27.Scottish open champion, it is the Harbour master, Dennis Harbour.

:26:28. > :27:17.I am loving that work on from Dennis Harbour. In 2016, is Darryl Fitton

:27:18. > :27:22.fit for purpose? If not, Dennis Harbour will run him aground.

:27:23. > :27:27.It is a blast from the past taking on a blast from the past and

:27:28. > :27:34.present. These two made their debuts on the same day in 2003. Fitton has

:27:35. > :27:40.been here every year since, it is a full decade since Harbour last

:27:41. > :27:47.directed darting traffic by the Basingstoke Canal. Deadly Dennis was

:27:48. > :27:53.Dutch man's Jelle Klaasen's first victim on his way to the title in

:27:54. > :27:58.2006. But the 50-year-old is back on form, and that is why he is back it

:27:59. > :28:03.Lakeside. Darryl Fitton is seeded seven this year. There would be no

:28:04. > :28:07.more popular winner, but do not discount Dennis. Fitton against

:28:08. > :28:20.Harbour, the first to three sets. Fitton with the darts. Dennis

:28:21. > :28:28.Harbour has had three ranking title successes this season. The Scottish

:28:29. > :28:33.open, the Isle of Man open, and the English national singles title. That

:28:34. > :28:37.is a good start for Fitton. On the way to the singles title, hebe Dean

:28:38. > :28:50.Reynolds, Ted Hankey, Tony O'Shea and Jim Williams. Not a bad line-up.

:28:51. > :28:59.Not a bad start. How about that. He currently averages 180.

:29:00. > :29:08.That is a handy response from big barrel. Price semifinalist. --

:29:09. > :29:15.Darryl Fitton. Ten ranking titles in all to his name. We will see of

:29:16. > :29:22.Dennis can build. That is four. The crowd would have loved to have seen

:29:23. > :29:26.a nine darter. We all would. What a start to the match, Bobby George

:29:27. > :29:33.said it might be boring. Are you sure, Bobby? We will have some more

:29:34. > :29:44.of this, please. Darryl Fitton is really boring. -- really boring.

:29:45. > :30:05.Madness, they are a fan of his. He certainly gives them a great

:30:06. > :30:19.Harbour with 84 against the throw. Start with treble 21 would expect.

:30:20. > :30:30.14 would leave the bull's-eye. -- 20, one would expect. Bull's-eye for

:30:31. > :30:36.the opening leg of the match. Would have been a 12 dart leg for Dennis

:30:37. > :30:39.Harbour. In his first visit to that stage in fully a decade. He will be

:30:40. > :31:02.back though,. That is a good start, sliding in.

:31:03. > :31:11.The opening leg against the throw going for Dennis Harbour. Darryl

:31:12. > :31:13.Fitton the favourite. Harbour, a man in form, made his debut way back in

:31:14. > :31:46.1985. I say it is Dennis Harbour's first

:31:47. > :31:52.visit to Lakeside since 2006, he has been on the stage before as recent

:31:53. > :31:58.as July, he won the Gold cup pairs for Cambridgeshire with Eddie

:31:59. > :32:04.Martin. On the same stage but a completely different atmosphere. Did

:32:05. > :32:11.research. -- good. Thank you very much.

:32:12. > :32:22.Excellent. Fitton's first maximum of the match.

:32:23. > :32:39.Such a popular player among all those who really Darryl Fitton. A

:32:40. > :32:48.big teddy bear of a bloke. Can he build on that 180? He won't want to

:32:49. > :32:59.let the Harbour Mastour Sail away from it. And another maximum from

:33:00. > :33:09.the master. The Harbour is out with the washing. And Darryl is ideally

:33:10. > :33:21.placed to strike straight back. 42 now required. Steadies himself.

:33:22. > :33:34.Double 6, wouldn't expect that, but he adjusts. An 11 dart leg for the

:33:35. > :33:41.Dazzler Darryl Fitton. He drops anchor in the match. First to three

:33:42. > :33:47.sets goes through, each set the best of five legs so a race to three. So

:33:48. > :34:00.far, this is everything we could have hoped for and more.

:34:01. > :34:11.Fitton has settled into this one beautifully. Best year was arguably

:34:12. > :34:18.2005 when he got to the semis, beating lots of players, hammered

:34:19. > :34:32.Robert Thornton 5-0 but then lost to Barney in the semis. Lost to Tony

:34:33. > :34:38.O'Shea in that occasion. About time we saw Fitton in a final really.

:34:39. > :34:42.This 14th consecutive visit to that stage in the war championships and

:34:43. > :34:52.he and Dennis Harbour made their debuts on the same day in 2003. He

:34:53. > :34:59.will have his own ideas Dennis. Watching the board as Darryl peppers

:35:00. > :35:03.that treble 20. He beat Glenn Dorrans on each occasion earlier

:35:04. > :35:17.this year and in the Isle of Man he had a victory over coffee. --

:35:18. > :35:22.Wolfie. A man to be reckoned with. The first-round match when they go

:35:23. > :35:32.up in the air, you don't want Dennis Harbour coming against you when you

:35:33. > :35:42.are the number seven seed. Which way is he going, treble 7 or bull? He

:35:43. > :35:50.will come back with eight double top. And Fitton to hold onto the

:35:51. > :35:55.throw and emphatically take the advantage. What a set it has been

:35:56. > :36:04.already. Let's see if he can do it, 48. Double 16, double Fitton. --

:36:05. > :36:18.Darryl Fitton. I tell you what, we have had a 14

:36:19. > :36:27.dart leg, and 11 dart leg and now a 15 dart leg. And two doubles out of

:36:28. > :36:33.three for Fitton which is handy. And look at this average from Darryl

:36:34. > :36:41.Fitton. Still early in the match of course but an average of 105 with

:36:42. > :36:48.two doubles hit out of three, a traffic starts. The best was the 100

:36:49. > :36:54.plus he managed against Gary Robson in 2008 and he is looking in prime

:36:55. > :37:01.form. Good research John. LAUGHING

:37:02. > :37:02.Touche. I would not be surprised if the Flying Scotsman was watching

:37:03. > :37:08.now. Three visits to the oche, three 100

:37:09. > :37:35.and 40s. A chilly wet day down here in

:37:36. > :37:42.Frimley Green but it is a hot atmosphere inside the Lakeside arena

:37:43. > :37:50.and Harbour is clinging on and has the advantage here.

:37:51. > :38:02.That was the head of Glenn Dorrans, and it's Kerry to? -- a bit scary

:38:03. > :38:17.wasn't it? 81 to level the opening set. Treble 10 for double 16. He

:38:18. > :38:29.will be back. Fitton a long way adrift. 140 would help proceedings.

:38:30. > :38:44.Needs a treble to get on a finish. Not under much pressure but some for

:38:45. > :38:48.double top. 2-2 but Fitton with the darts, where we started in the

:38:49. > :38:57.opening set and Darryl Fitton who has produced to refix darts -- good

:38:58. > :39:04.darts, is now looking for maximum number three. And again. Room for

:39:05. > :39:12.three more darts as well wasn't there? To reflect start to a leg

:39:13. > :39:16.that Darryl will feel he must win. -- did start. In the context you do

:39:17. > :39:22.not want to play this well and lose it. Fair play to Dennis Harbour

:39:23. > :39:30.hanging on in there and that is a good response.

:39:31. > :39:44.Still has plenty to aim at. An opportunity for Dennis Harbour. The

:39:45. > :39:52.deciding leg of this first set. A really good set to watch this. He

:39:53. > :40:05.will be disappointed with that. To throw for Cheshire once upon a

:40:06. > :40:14.time did Darryl, now living in Manchester.

:40:15. > :40:27.That is not a finish 161, over, it is of course.

:40:28. > :40:38.Let's see if he can do it? 161. He has six from here so doesn't

:40:39. > :40:46.necessarily need to go for the bull. It looks like he's going for it.

:40:47. > :40:53.That would have raised the roof if he fired that one in. Crystal,

:40:54. > :40:59.Darryl's wife giving him the thumbs up.

:41:00. > :41:16.He still has time. Had to get that treble. Fitton 47 to win this set.

:41:17. > :41:27.Two dart at double 16 and that will do it. Another 14 dart leg. What

:41:28. > :41:42.said. He is charged up. -- what a set. Taking the first set.

:41:43. > :41:49.He beat Alan Norris last year Darryl Fitton in the World Championships.

:41:50. > :42:03.Here goes Harbour. When all is said and done, it was

:42:04. > :42:08.just a set, a fantastic set, a high-quality cert with the darts.

:42:09. > :42:10.Always felt like a match in itself, drama each way, the crowd right into

:42:11. > :42:51.it. Cracking finish from Fitton. Not quite that time, Fitton had a

:42:52. > :42:59.nice throw which are served him well over the years.

:43:00. > :43:06.Hasn't Ashley won a ranking title since the German open in 2014. --

:43:07. > :43:12.actually. Got as far as the quarterfinal when he lost out to

:43:13. > :43:17.Glenn Dorrans. Did reach a couple last year Darryl. Runner-up to

:43:18. > :43:22.Martin Adams in the Dutch open, runner-up to Scott Mitchell in the

:43:23. > :43:28.Jersey open. Already on a finish Dennis Harbour. Not any more. But he

:43:29. > :43:46.will be back. Considering the options. May go the

:43:47. > :43:55.18 routes, he tried to but one is not what he wants. 180 would make

:43:56. > :44:03.you look a whole lot healthier. Bush might make it. Unlucky.

:44:04. > :44:34.Here we go for the opening leg. Topps he needs. Good marker. --

:44:35. > :44:43.tops. Annoyed. No way he can check out. Just trying to make his life

:44:44. > :44:53.easier for the next visit if there should be one? Chances look against

:44:54. > :44:55.it. Tops for Harbour. And the Cambridgeshire man takes the first

:44:56. > :45:19.leg of the second set. An amazing array of fancied dress

:45:20. > :45:23.costumes down there. -- fancy dress. Some of it, you have to say, in a

:45:24. > :45:32.fairly hot environment, must be quite trying. We have seen suits of

:45:33. > :45:38.armour and gorillas. Bad hair days all around. Is that Alice Cooper? I

:45:39. > :45:50.am told it is Kiss. An American band.

:45:51. > :46:09.You know who they are here to support? Christian Kist. Harbour

:46:10. > :46:14.putting the Fitton throw under pressure. He has just gone off the

:46:15. > :46:15.boil, Fitton. He was flying in the first set but somehow finding the

:46:16. > :46:44.big numbers elusive out there. Oh, yes, his second 180 of the

:46:45. > :46:48.match, Dennis Harbour. And this is against the throw. It is a really

:46:49. > :46:52.good position that Harbour has landed himself in. Fitton is not on

:46:53. > :47:01.a finish, he has six from here. Bull's-eye. And he goes for it. He

:47:02. > :47:18.will be back. Just looking to pile up the numbers.

:47:19. > :47:48.He was annoyed with the last dart. There was tension in that throw. He

:47:49. > :47:52.dragged that way south of the mark. Fitton, who looked like he was out

:47:53. > :48:06.of it in this set, has the chance to get out of jail.

:48:07. > :48:22.He needed 552 square 80 the match. And that would have hurt Dennis

:48:23. > :48:28.Harbour, but, he does it. Against the darts, Dennis Harbour, now

:48:29. > :48:32.throwing first for the second set. He is unflappable. He looked like he

:48:33. > :48:36.was in danger of being blown away early in the match, but he hung on

:48:37. > :48:40.in the opening set with the advantage of the throw he is now in

:48:41. > :48:48.prime position to take the second and square the match. He has had a

:48:49. > :48:56.funny World Championship career. He met fellow debutant, 19-year-old

:48:57. > :49:02.James Wade in 2003. James Wade missed ten darts to beat Harbour in

:49:03. > :49:10.the first round before Dennis hit back with a 145 check-out and a 3-2

:49:11. > :49:11.win. James Wade will love you for reminding him of that! Of course he

:49:12. > :49:35.will. That was 2003 for Dennis Harbour.

:49:36. > :49:45.His only other appearance he lost to Mervyn King in round two, and in

:49:46. > :49:53.2006, he met another qualifier in Klaasen Anna Laird before Klaasen

:49:54. > :50:00.came back. -- and he was leading before Klaasen came back.

:50:01. > :50:16.He has a chance to clean out this set now.

:50:17. > :50:25.Not this time. But Fitton is a long way back.

:50:26. > :51:01.OK, for the set. Still no finish for Fitton. Not under pressure, really.

:51:02. > :51:06.Fitton should have been in the position to take this leg, but he

:51:07. > :51:18.has played scrappy darts. It could be a little bit too much,

:51:19. > :51:23.too late. And here he goes.

:51:24. > :51:41.That is three missed set darts, but not four. Fitton needs to get back

:51:42. > :51:52.to where he was in the first set, when he averaged about 102.

:51:53. > :52:13.Dennis Harbour's wife is watching on.

:52:14. > :52:21.She would not have enjoyed that visit.

:52:22. > :52:31.Fitton trying to grit his teeth and get back to where he was. He cannot

:52:32. > :52:33.afford to lose this opening leg. Having to work his way along the

:52:34. > :52:50.oche. It makes it harder still. Harbour likes it harder. It was a

:52:51. > :52:56.great last dart. Threading it through the eye of the needle. Into

:52:57. > :52:58.the lipstick. And this is better from Darryl Fitton. The Dazzler has

:52:59. > :53:14.some of his sparkle back. 179 Darryl will need when he comes

:53:15. > :53:27.back. Harbour, that was a prosaic visit to the oche. Plenty to work

:53:28. > :53:40.with after that good first dart. Coming down the board beautifully.

:53:41. > :53:51.Harbour playing his fourth match in the World Championships 80 Lakeside,

:53:52. > :54:02.Dennis Harbour. Darryl is playing his 28th.

:54:03. > :54:09.That might have looked routine, but after throwing so badly in the

:54:10. > :54:17.second set, Fitton will be feeling better about having that one in the

:54:18. > :54:27.bag. We will be seeing a little emotion from Dennis Harbour, since

:54:28. > :54:29.he won that second set. But it is more disappointment.

:54:30. > :54:50.Fitton will be looking to jump all over this.

:54:51. > :54:59.That represented a chance missed from Fitton. Harbour against

:55:00. > :55:04.struggling to find the treble until the last.... A cracking last dart.

:55:05. > :55:18.He would have been feeling the pressure.

:55:19. > :55:27.From here, neither player can afford a quiet period like Darryl had in

:55:28. > :55:31.the last set. Frankly, it is the best of three. You can be out before

:55:32. > :55:44.you know it. Another poor visit from Harbour.

:55:45. > :55:55.That was unlucky. Three good darts and they all went above the wire. 18

:55:56. > :56:12.darts 80 the board in this leg and only one treble.

:56:13. > :56:20.Precious conspire on the big stage. Neither player seizing the

:56:21. > :56:26.advantage. The worst leg of the match so far by a distance.

:56:27. > :56:40.Where has it gone wrong, he said to himself.

:56:41. > :57:01.27 thrown in this leg and still the one treble. But that was better from

:57:02. > :57:03.Darryl Fitton. After what has gone before he will take 100, but it did

:57:04. > :57:38.not leave him on a finish. 88 for Harbour to square up the

:57:39. > :57:48.match. Fitton on a potential two darts 80 a potential check-out. --

:57:49. > :57:55.to a potential check-out. Big pressure and big response.

:57:56. > :58:04.What an awful leg but a great finish! Exactly what I was going to

:58:05. > :58:18.save. Great finish, terrible leg. -- to say.

:58:19. > :58:22.It is still dead level. Fitted with the slight advantage by the fact he

:58:23. > :58:39.has two throw. That was a steady start from Darryl

:58:40. > :58:56.Fitton. The first week of January every year

:58:57. > :59:01.since 2003. Darryl has been here, he has been competing on the stage. He

:59:02. > :59:05.has lost in round one more often than not but has reached two

:59:06. > :59:10.semifinals, he has reached quarterfinals, including last year

:59:11. > :59:15.when he lost 5-2 to Glenn Durrant, our top seed this year. On the same

:59:16. > :59:18.day in 2003, Dennis Harbour made his debut, but he has only been back

:59:19. > :59:37.once since, in 2006. That keeps him in contention. And

:59:38. > :59:50.Fitton trying to rediscover the power scoring of the first set.

:59:51. > :59:57.That was his fifth 140 plus. His average was 80 105 80 one point but

:59:58. > :00:06.has plummeted to 93, but still ahead of Harbour in terms of scoring.

:00:07. > :00:27.Double 10 now, double 5. Missed it by a distance. This would sting. He

:00:28. > :00:38.can't now having missed the treble 20.

:00:39. > :00:47.One, double two. He got there in the end. 2-1 up. Maintaining his

:00:48. > :00:58.advantage. A dead leg this. -- big. end. 2-1 up. Maintaining his

:00:59. > :01:13.Dennis Harbour you feel must hold. The first to three sets, to

:01:14. > :01:22.determine who has the first throw it can be so important and if it all

:01:23. > :01:23.goes with darts then Fitton has the advantage having the first darts of

:01:24. > :01:48.the match. Number seven seed this year. The

:01:49. > :01:49.same side of the draw as the defending champion Scott Mitchell

:01:50. > :02:19.and Martin Adams. He seems to have slowed down a bit

:02:20. > :02:23.Harbour, has lost his momentum and rhythm a little bit. Let's face it,

:02:24. > :02:50.he was never quick. Darryl doing enough so far. Hot work

:02:51. > :02:55.out there for the players today, capacity crowd, Harbour looking for

:02:56. > :03:09.a maximum but the 140 keeps him in contention. That is his 10th.

:03:10. > :03:24.That is disappointing, that single five, it means Dennis Harbour has

:03:25. > :03:38.six darts from 196 to level the set. What a great opportunity then. Still

:03:39. > :03:44.to darts away. -- two. How much pressure can Fitton put on that 56?

:03:45. > :03:48.Not a great deal, he would have hoped for more than that. Fitton

:03:49. > :03:57.effectively serving this out, that was a least one. You have 49 Dennis.

:03:58. > :04:09.Just checking with the scorer. Topps now, one dart at it. Just snatched

:04:10. > :04:19.at it. A chance now for Darryl Fitton to make the sets. 14 for

:04:20. > :04:28.Topps. This is set point -- tops. And there it is.

:04:29. > :04:38.A big big check out in the context of the match. Dennis Harbour still

:04:39. > :04:46.with the darts but Fitton is a set away from a place in the second

:04:47. > :04:53.round. And that is where missing big 16 hurt Dennis Harbour. He should

:04:54. > :04:59.have had to darts at double Topps but because he strayed into the

:05:00. > :05:07.seven, he only had one hand Darryl Fitton showed all of his experience

:05:08. > :05:09.-- tops. Whoever wins this faces a potential match in the next round

:05:10. > :05:14.against the world champion Martin Phillips. Or David Cameron from

:05:15. > :05:41.Canada or one, Mr Ted Hankey. His trademark bowtie, the flag of St

:05:42. > :05:57.George. He has done his refereeing this afternoon has Nick. Oh dear.

:05:58. > :06:03.That is not what Harbour required of what could be the decisive set. A

:06:04. > :06:10.big score for Fitton here, can he punishing? That is good, could do

:06:11. > :06:16.with another. He got another but not quite in the right bed. Still, he is

:06:17. > :06:32.nearly 100 a head. -- ahead. Finally find a treble, Dennis

:06:33. > :06:53.Harbour but Fitton has stolen the darts. Straight back in the red.

:06:54. > :07:02.Dennis supporters are starting to see it slip away, no finish, neither

:07:03. > :07:15.for Fitton but he will have first crack.

:07:16. > :07:32.He will be cross with himself Darryl Fitton but Dennis Harbour back on

:07:33. > :07:39.186. Good from Harbour, 140, would hope to be closer to the mark than

:07:40. > :07:53.he is, going for two treble 19 's and a double tops. Cannot be done

:07:54. > :07:59.now, hast to re-competes. -- has to re-computer. Tops. Harbour gets away

:08:00. > :08:34.with it. And doesn't Fitton know it. Bell Darryl under pressure throwing

:08:35. > :08:34.first, -- now. Dennis Harbour, the Harbour lights still burning

:08:35. > :08:54.brightly after that last leg. That is more like it, great first

:08:55. > :08:57.darts, fill them up. His fourth maximum. Superb first darts gave

:08:58. > :09:15.that opportunity. Harbour in the must win situation

:09:16. > :09:39.and Fitton with the throw here. Looking pretty for this leg.

:09:40. > :10:05.Good. And again. Not bad following on from the 180 earlier stop from

:10:06. > :10:12.the 1920s to the treble 20s. Fitton 17 now to square off the set, his

:10:13. > :10:22.fifth of the match, 12 would leave tops. Now he has double 8. A wry

:10:23. > :10:34.smile from Dennis. You just get the feeling that Darryl

:10:35. > :10:40.is really enjoying himself now. I think you would like to see it

:10:41. > :10:49.finished. He was flying in the first set, there has been a time since

:10:50. > :10:55.where it has been a bit off, the standard droppings and at time way

:10:56. > :11:01.way down but that is more like it. A good start to the lake. It seems

:11:02. > :11:05.both players when they are finding big numbers they by finding them.

:11:06. > :11:11.And when the missing by both missing. So often the case in this

:11:12. > :11:20.game, they feed off each other, goodness knows what he's feeding

:11:21. > :11:25.off. It is very black and white isn't its? The first to three sets

:11:26. > :11:37.goes through and at the moment Darryl Fitton is two legs away.

:11:38. > :11:46.Surprised they didn't come down to the 19 's then, he is blocked for

:11:47. > :11:56.the treble 20 and Fitton can make him pay maybe, another one would

:11:57. > :12:02.hurt. Darryl's wife watching on intently.

:12:03. > :12:18.Crystal will know that if Darryl can win this leg, he'll be sitting very

:12:19. > :12:25.pretty with the darts, two legs from now. A loose last darts, he was in a

:12:26. > :12:31.great position there but Harbour, he will want to take this out. Treble

:12:32. > :12:47.19 would leave him double 12. Missed it by a distance. 95. Looking at the

:12:48. > :12:56.bull. Bouncing out. All about the 19 's now. Five are needed. I bet you

:12:57. > :13:10.Bobby George will be saying that is what happens when you go for bull.

:13:11. > :13:14.Tops. Harbour edges ahead once more in this set, it's looked as though

:13:15. > :13:22.he would lose it but Fitton couldn't I. Looks a different player on

:13:23. > :13:29.double tops when he has two for it. In the third set when he missed the

:13:30. > :13:33.big 16 and left themselves the one at double tops, a couple of times in

:13:34. > :13:37.this set he has found himself to an found themselves the middle of the

:13:38. > :13:50.top bed with his first darts. -- himself in the middle.

:13:51. > :14:04.Needs this to square up the set once more and then potentially be one leg

:14:05. > :14:10.away from a place in the next round. Nice, asks the question of Dennis

:14:11. > :14:17.Harbour. What have you got? So far not a treble. Needs a stepladder to

:14:18. > :14:24.get over those, he will have to move. Fitton firmly in control as a

:14:25. > :14:30.result of that, you would think that we have said that before. And that

:14:31. > :14:45.leaves him on a finish. His highest ever checkout was 164 in

:14:46. > :15:02.his debut match in 2000 and through when he lost 3-1 to John Burden.

:15:03. > :15:09.Fitton will get aid of a chance. That was a good last dart, but a

:15:10. > :15:28.shabby second. Jim Williams had a 140 check-out

:15:29. > :15:46.earlier on, that is the best we have seen so far.

:15:47. > :16:05.This will be some way to take out the set and take us into a decider.

:16:06. > :16:20.This is probably a must take for Fitton.

:16:21. > :16:32.Back on level terms. Hard work, but he has got there. And now Harbour

:16:33. > :16:36.knows he simply has too win this leg, or it is goodbye, thank you

:16:37. > :16:40.very much, I have done my best and Darryl Fitton will be through. I

:16:41. > :16:47.tell you what, this is good fun. It is tight.

:16:48. > :17:04.A great start from the Harbour Master.

:17:05. > :17:18.Just a reminder, if it goes to a deciding set, from 2-2, you must win

:17:19. > :17:24.by two clear legs. From 5-5, it is sudden death. One..., closest to the

:17:25. > :17:29.bull starts us off and whoever wins that leg goes through. But that is a

:17:30. > :17:48.long way off. I was going to say, it is a long way.

:17:49. > :17:55.There was ironic cheering because it took him so long to find his flight.

:17:56. > :18:03.And this is a terrific visit from Fitton. Almost as good as it gets.

:18:04. > :18:17.And it keeps him in touch. Whose nerve will hold? It is squeaky

:18:18. > :18:25.bottom time as a certain Scotsman used to say.

:18:26. > :18:26.So far, Dennis Harbour's nerve is holding very nicely indeed, thank

:18:27. > :18:39.you. Two visits at 140. He found the trouble with his

:18:40. > :19:11.last.... It was 60, wasn't it? That was unlucky. It does not count.

:19:12. > :19:26.You are right, he did not find the treble, so 81.

:19:27. > :19:42.He has left in Darryl Fitton. But it is a big ask. This for the match.

:19:43. > :19:52.Harbour breathes again. Daughter Debbie cannot watch.

:19:53. > :20:13.He has done it! He has done it. And we are going all the way. This has

:20:14. > :20:24.turned out to be a real scrap. It has an attritional feel about it. He

:20:25. > :20:30.is not a happy boy. He will be thinking, I should have put him away

:20:31. > :20:35.by now. He did not miss a dart for it, though. You cannot change

:20:36. > :20:48.history, but you can change the future.

:20:49. > :21:26.I think that is Dennis's some on the left. And Bobby on the right and mum

:21:27. > :21:31.Lana in the middle. The family tree has worked out. Darryl Fitton trying

:21:32. > :21:41.to moving towards winning this particular leg, and moving closer.

:21:42. > :21:47.How he needs to hold onto his throw. Check-out percentages have been

:21:48. > :21:59.decent. They have, anything over 50% is excellent. And 45% from the

:22:00. > :22:16.Harbour Master, not too shabby. Good darts.

:22:17. > :22:23.That was poor from Harbour. 90 for the opening leg of this deciding

:22:24. > :23:04.set. What was that third dart about, he

:23:05. > :23:07.says. The gesture said it all. Still, he would take 125. Not

:23:08. > :23:41.exactly doing cartwheels. Steady again. He will feel he cannot

:23:42. > :23:43.lose this leg, Dennis Harbour. He will not do if Darryl keeps putting

:23:44. > :23:56.them in there. There is not a lot to choose between

:23:57. > :24:04.them in terms of big hits. Harbour may be the slight advantage but the

:24:05. > :24:21.higher average is with Fitton. 89 as opposed to 85, at this stage. Fitted

:24:22. > :24:30.is miles back. -- Fitton. Forget Harbour, it was Fitton who was all

:24:31. > :24:35.at sea on that visit. Yet to break 300 in this leg. He has already had

:24:36. > :24:53.nine darts. Inching rather than racing towards

:24:54. > :25:01.the targets. Darryl needs to start finding trebles he is annoyed with

:25:02. > :25:03.himself. He has not been put off by something in the crowd, he is trying

:25:04. > :25:33.to concentrate and refocus. Fitton's poor scoring is costing him

:25:34. > :25:40.dear. Martin Adams is in action before too long. He looks a bit like

:25:41. > :25:49.him, doesn't he? It is not the great man, I hasten to add. And still they

:25:50. > :25:56.cannot be separated. Maybe that sudden death, which I pooh-poohed a

:25:57. > :26:08.few moments ago, maybe it will come to that. It is not Martin Adams. It

:26:09. > :26:52.is a mini Martin. It is a wolf cub! At two apiece and one apiece in

:26:53. > :27:00.legs, there is no room for error. Still next to nothing between them.

:27:01. > :27:07.Harbour with his nose ahead but nothing significant.

:27:08. > :27:25.That was quality from Fitton. Gosh, did he need that!

:27:26. > :27:28.For a first-round match this has turned out to be a right royal

:27:29. > :27:43.battle. He should have set that up. They

:27:44. > :27:49.were a couple of shockers. He did well to step away from the oche and

:27:50. > :28:04.refocus. And he is not on a finish. Advantage, Harbour.

:28:05. > :28:16.Fitton feeling the pressure? He will be now. Just 45 required for taking

:28:17. > :28:19.a leg against the throw for Harbour. Fitton can do no more than Hammer

:28:20. > :28:25.the big scores, which he does brilliantly.

:28:26. > :28:38.He has left himself in the madhouse if he comes back. You could say

:28:39. > :28:44.maybe it was not the right dart. He has had success with tops and he has

:28:45. > :28:47.had again and that will hurt Fitton. Harbour has the darts and can take

:28:48. > :29:09.this match out. With the darts for the match. Only

:29:10. > :29:15.55 from Dennis Harbour, who looked so unflappable throughout. The crowd

:29:16. > :29:22.are absolutely with this one. I think many of them would love to see

:29:23. > :29:36.Fitton bounce back. That was a good effort.

:29:37. > :29:51.The tension is palpable. He found the treble bed. He needed that,

:29:52. > :30:05.Dennis Harbour. Darryl Fitton must break to stay in the match.

:30:06. > :30:15.STUDIO: Nothing we can do about the timing, we are on BBC Two now. On

:30:16. > :30:16.BBC One we will switch over to Final Score. If
