:00:36. > :00:41.An afternoon on the oche at the Lakeside, and no doubt a fuel of

:00:42. > :00:46.this lot are on fancy dress in case their bosses are watching! Six-man

:00:47. > :00:52.two women going to work on the Lakeside stage, here is a rundown of

:00:53. > :00:57.what is ahead. Martin Adams surely fancying his

:00:58. > :01:04.chances this week, although Jeff Smith is a tough, tough first-round

:01:05. > :01:09.draw. The Chatterbox is back, Peter

:01:10. > :01:14.Sajwani, but he faces Mark McGeeney, who Bobby really likes the look.

:01:15. > :01:18.Deta Hedman, always a Lakeside favourite, has three darts in her

:01:19. > :01:23.hand and she hopes they are hot, hot, hot. Gary Robson plays with two

:01:24. > :01:29.black eyes after falling off a hover board. The good news? We have a

:01:30. > :01:32.video. From the safety of the Lakeside

:01:33. > :01:35.balcony, it will all be watched by a legend who has been around long

:01:36. > :01:41.enough to go out drinking with misusing 's dad, Bobby George. Are

:01:42. > :01:46.you well? We have probably had more drama than quality, we always like

:01:47. > :01:51.to tell it how it is, so far? Any change today? It is a good line-up.

:01:52. > :01:56.Martin Adams, last year he was runner up and he did not play well.

:01:57. > :02:02.This year he is playing better and he should go all the way. He has got

:02:03. > :02:10.a lot of well ranking points, more confidence. Same old, same old, but

:02:11. > :02:13.I never thought I would see that, not only playing at the Grand Slam

:02:14. > :02:20.darts but playing well and everybody fell in love with Wolfie. He was

:02:21. > :02:26.blowing kisses at everyone. But he has a tougher opponent today. Week

:02:27. > :02:31.or him the Silencer for a reason, he averages over 90, Jeff Smith is just

:02:32. > :02:38.deadly. He has a good game on his hands. We think it is the 23rd year

:02:39. > :02:42.that Wolfie has been at the Lakeside, so we sent along special

:02:43. > :02:46.agent Richard Ashdown, because we wanted to know how much Martin Adams

:02:47. > :02:52.knows about Martin Adams. I am here for a special edition of

:02:53. > :03:02.the Ashdown Modem, with a Lakeside legend. Name? Martin Adams. Age? 59.

:03:03. > :03:10.Occupation? Professional. Players. Your specialist subject? Marrows!

:03:11. > :03:14.Sorry, Wolfie. What year did you make your first Lakeside World

:03:15. > :03:19.Championship appearance? 1994. Correct. Who was your opponent in

:03:20. > :03:30.your very first match? Correct. You defeated a fellow Englishman to

:03:31. > :03:37.reach first semifinal in 1995, who? I don't know! Mike Gregory. Was that

:03:38. > :03:41.in 95? My word. What was the year you joined the dreaded list of

:03:42. > :03:49.number one seeds to fall at the first hurdle, and you defeated you?

:03:50. > :04:01.I will guess at 1995. 1997. The opponent? Robbie Widows? Roger

:04:02. > :04:11.Carter. You have hit 16 180s, who was that against? Chris Mason in the

:04:12. > :04:15.quarterfinals in 1999. Really? Would you like me to ask you any more

:04:16. > :04:20.questions about that much? Up to you, I don't mind. We will leave it.

:04:21. > :04:33.Who did you defeat to reach your first Lakeside final in 2005? You

:04:34. > :04:39.beat him 5- C Rowe. -- 5- C Rowe. Simon Whitlock. He reached the final

:04:40. > :04:46.in 2007, how many sets were you leading film Nixon by at half-time?

:04:47. > :04:55.6-0. What was the final score and what was the checkout that she won

:04:56. > :05:03.with? 7-6, 54, 14, double top. You have registered 11 161 checkouts at

:05:04. > :05:09.Lakeside, but just one maximum finish of 170, against whom and in

:05:10. > :05:17.what match? Pass. Dave Chisnall in the 2010 final. I am really good at

:05:18. > :05:24.this?! How far away from the double 12 were you in last year's semifinal

:05:25. > :05:30.on your attempt at the 9-darter finish and ?50,000? That was very

:05:31. > :05:34.close. About this? We will accept that, correct. How many matches have

:05:35. > :05:48.you played in the Lakeside World Championships? No idea. 70. My word.

:05:49. > :05:52.How many... BUZZER RINGS. I have started so I have finished, how many

:05:53. > :06:02.BDO world titles have you won? Three. Correct. Six correct answers

:06:03. > :06:04.and one pass, but we will give you a bonus point for remembering the

:06:05. > :06:11.checkout in 2007. Thank you. Not very good about, was

:06:12. > :06:15.he? Fantastic, it brought back the memories and harks back to the most

:06:16. > :06:20.important thing, he has this consistency that nobody else has

:06:21. > :06:24.been able to find. What keeps him so young in that oche, to come back

:06:25. > :06:29.every year as a favourite? He practices all the time, about three

:06:30. > :06:35.or four macro hours a day, even when he is not playing he practices can

:06:36. > :06:40.he puts the hours in. 70 games, that is a record, it must be.

:06:41. > :06:46.Self-motivated, disciplined, professional? Yeah, he does it

:06:47. > :06:51.properly. He would be a great guy to have in the Army with you, you could

:06:52. > :06:58.trust him. I would be disappointed if he does not put a show on today.

:06:59. > :07:02.And he will need to, we saw it with Joe Smith last year, he arrived a

:07:03. > :07:07.relative unknown, he is back this year doing about the same thing,

:07:08. > :07:13.averaging around 92, hitting one out of two doubles, that or thereabouts.

:07:14. > :07:18.Consistency is the keyword. He shocked everyone. I thought he would

:07:19. > :07:29.get to the final. He played really well. Adams knows that. Adams was

:07:30. > :07:33.working in 140s, 180s, Jeff was as well. It should be tight but I think

:07:34. > :07:37.I will go for Adams as well. It is a shame they are meeting in the first

:07:38. > :07:42.round, that is the way the draw goes. They are all good players, but

:07:43. > :07:46.they don't perform. We know those players can perform. The unknown,

:07:47. > :07:50.you don't know what you will see, but if we do not see these play

:07:51. > :07:53.well, we will be disappointed. There is only one man to introduce the

:07:54. > :08:06.players, let me introduce Tim, Little Richard Ashdown. RICHARD

:08:07. > :08:11.ASHDOWN: LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WELCOME TO THE 2016 LAKESIDE WORLD

:08:12. > :08:19.CHAMPIONSHIPS. It is day four at the home of world darts, the Lakeside!

:08:20. > :08:25.We now introduced to the stage the reigning Dutch open champion, three

:08:26. > :08:30.times a world master, three times the Lakeside world champion, it's

:08:31. > :08:43.Wolfie, Martin Adams! MUSIC: "Hungry Like The Wolf" by

:08:44. > :09:14.Duran Duran. MUSIC: "Hungry Like The Wolf" by

:09:15. > :09:57.Duran Duran. We now introduced a Lakeside World

:09:58. > :10:03.Championship and BDO Trophy semifinalist, the reigning Las Vegas

:10:04. > :10:18.open champion. From Canada, the Silencer, Jeff Smith!

:10:19. > :10:45.COUNTRY ROCK MUSIC PLAYERS. -- PLAYS.

:10:46. > :10:58.MUSIC: "NEW ORLEANS IS SINKING" BY THE TRAGICALLY HIP.

:10:59. > :11:02.STUDIO: Stars off the stage, John Wilson is here for his 80th birthday

:11:03. > :11:08.and had the hall is here for her 90th.

:11:09. > :11:13.Now the commentary team. COMMENTATOR: Here is the question,

:11:14. > :11:18.who do you fancy for this one? Martin Adams, I hear you thinking,

:11:19. > :11:26.and yes, he is the number two seed, Bertie is relaxed, he shared a joke

:11:27. > :11:31.backstage not 20 minutes ago. -- but he is relaxed, we shared. He has all

:11:32. > :11:35.the experience in the world. But Jeff Smith has something about him

:11:36. > :11:42.on that stage. A semifinalist on debut last year, he was mighty

:11:43. > :11:46.impressive, averaging 92 in the prelim and hitting 64% of his

:11:47. > :11:53.doubles. England against Canada for a place in the last 16, honestly,

:11:54. > :12:06.honestly, this is anyone's. But we expect a high quality darts match.

:12:07. > :12:13.MC: first set, first leg, Jeff to throw first. Game on. COMMENTATOR:

:12:14. > :12:28.One thing is for certain, the Silencer will not go quietly. We saw

:12:29. > :12:36.how he performed last year, I'm sure we will see it a lot this year.

:12:37. > :12:41.Hello, Martin, welcome to Lakeside! Almost a perfect start. He has had

:12:42. > :12:47.to wait until Tuesday afternoon to get his Lakeside 2016 and away. His

:12:48. > :12:52.71st match on that stage, can you believe it? You have seen every one

:12:53. > :12:57.of them, Tony? Yes, hopefully I will see a fume or! I think this will be

:12:58. > :13:24.a great match. -- see a view more. Martin is the number two siege. --

:13:25. > :13:53.seed. Not a bad start from the three-time champion. 121, 140, 125.

:13:54. > :14:04.Treble 20. Though he has gone for the 18. Double 10, the shaft.

:14:05. > :14:17.This is to break the throw. He won't care how many darts, as long as that

:14:18. > :14:36.one found the target. And it didn't. Take it away, Jeff.

:14:37. > :14:40.Martin with a smile on his face, but I think you may be going very

:14:41. > :14:59.shortly. Remarkable that Martin Adams has

:15:00. > :15:01.been coming to Lakeside in producing high quality darts like these for 23

:15:02. > :15:15.years. Last year he beat the likes of Gary

:15:16. > :15:24.Robson, Robbie Green, he has the form. That is Jeff Smith. Martin

:15:25. > :15:30.Adams got all the way to the final. Both players lost to Scott Mitchell,

:15:31. > :15:45.Smith in the semis and Martin in a humdinger of a final.

:15:46. > :15:49.A couple of loose visits from Smith, you can't afford them against Martin

:15:50. > :16:01.Adams. Another good audience. It is Tuesday

:16:02. > :16:04.lunchtime, remember! I wonder how many of those are technically meant

:16:05. > :16:30.to be at work? He has missed four darters at 88.

:16:31. > :16:43.Shanghai. Single, trouble and double. -- treble and double.

:16:44. > :16:56.Martin, you need a double! He has missed! I tell you, this guy can

:16:57. > :17:04.finish the shots. He needed 88, he hit 88. Wolfie is scoring so well,

:17:05. > :17:13.but he has not hit a double in seven attempt will stop -- seven attempt.

:17:14. > :17:19.When Jeff Smith gets near the doubles, he finds them. 64% of

:17:20. > :17:28.doubles hate in his first-round match, two out of four today. Martin

:17:29. > :17:31.is scoring brilliantly. But that double trouble can't continue if he

:17:32. > :17:41.is to find his way into the last extreme. -- last 16.

:17:42. > :17:53.Martin knows he is in a map. -- match. Each set is the first to

:17:54. > :18:01.three legs, and the first to three sets will be through to round two.

:18:02. > :18:07.Jeff has already had a match in the preliminary round, as Canada's

:18:08. > :18:32.number one. He gets an automatic invite.

:18:33. > :18:38.Single 16, he was going to go for. There it is. He will have more

:18:39. > :18:54.chances to hit a double. Eighth time lucky! Double top for

:18:55. > :19:24.Martin Adams. He is on the board. Finally something for his partner to

:19:25. > :19:42.celebrate. Martin's partner, that is.

:19:43. > :19:49.23 and paraded on the back of his shirt, it is his 23rd World

:19:50. > :19:57.Championship -- embroidered on the back. He says he is getting so close

:19:58. > :20:02.to 25, which would be a milestone he really wants to hate, 25 World

:20:03. > :20:09.Championships in a row. -- really wants to hit. He is 60 on the 4th of

:20:10. > :20:15.June this year, Martin Adams. He just thinks it is a bonus that he is

:20:16. > :20:17.back here in his 60th year. The way he is throwing, it is nothing like

:20:18. > :20:38.that, it is fully deserved. Jeff on 174, looking good for this

:20:39. > :20:54.leg. Wins the like, wins the set, Jeff Smith. Very nicely done.

:20:55. > :21:08.Double top. Yes. The first set, Jeff Smith. Second set, first leg, Martin

:21:09. > :21:32.to throw first. 180! They are on their feet up

:21:33. > :21:38.Lakeside. They are living it. -- loving it. He has had trouble

:21:39. > :21:45.hitting his doubles, but four out of four for Martin Adams. There was a

:21:46. > :21:55.grown-up because everyone knew he was on for a perfect nine. Leg, but

:21:56. > :22:03.180, 140, not that. -- for a perfect 9-darter leg, but 180, 140, not bad.

:22:04. > :22:19.Relentless pressure for both players. This is extraordinary.

:22:20. > :22:32.He has missed it four times, Martin, but if he hit 30, it is for a ten.

:22:33. > :22:42.Leg. Gok Wan. -- it is for a ten dart leg. Go on!

:22:43. > :22:56.I told you it would be a cracking match! You certainly did! A long way

:22:57. > :23:01.to go yet. What I was going to ask you at the start of that last leg,

:23:02. > :23:10.are you aware of a programme called Pimp My Ride? Pardon? About it as an

:23:11. > :23:16.MTV show where people take beaten up old bangers to a garage and they get

:23:17. > :23:21.essentially done up a bit, spoilers on, massive speakers in the boot,

:23:22. > :23:27.champagne on the back-seat, that sort of stuff. Like your car. That

:23:28. > :23:34.is what Jeff Smith does back home in Canada. He owns a garage doing up

:23:35. > :23:43.old cars. Business, he says, is booming.

:23:44. > :24:08.A little bit to do for Martin. And is a maximum helps and puts pressure

:24:09. > :24:15.on the double top. Jeff, you require 40. You would not expecting to miss

:24:16. > :24:29.this with three darts in his hand. But she has! -- he has!

:24:30. > :24:59.For the leg, double 10. Game, shot and the second leg, Jeff Smith.

:25:00. > :25:10.140! Martin has missed seven darts at a

:25:11. > :25:17.double, but despite that is averaging north of 100. And losing.

:25:18. > :25:26.And, by the way, that is comfortably the best average of the week so far.

:25:27. > :25:35.Imagine if all those darts that scored him zero weren't added to the

:25:36. > :25:46.equation. It could finish off as a classic, this one. It really is

:25:47. > :25:52.great to watch. Really powerful scoring from Martin Adams. But what

:25:53. > :25:57.is it that Bobby George reminds us year on year on year? Trebles for

:25:58. > :26:09.show, doubles for dough! A chance for Jeff Smith. Martin has

:26:10. > :26:39.not left himself on a finish. Jeff Smith has, the daddy of them

:26:40. > :26:49.all. He will be coming back for 170. Go one, Jeff!

:26:50. > :27:19.This is for a rake of throw. And to move within a leg of a two set lead.

:27:20. > :27:37.Just misses the double 16. Double 11! Yes! You just saw him as he

:27:38. > :27:42.walked back from picking up his starter from the double 11, puffing

:27:43. > :27:53.out his cheeks, that was a Wolfie sigh of relief, make no mistake. In

:27:54. > :28:03.a bad position, that first dart. Needs to get over the top. Hunters.

:28:04. > :28:08.-- and does. Jeff Smith with a shot. Jeff Smith freely admit to being a

:28:09. > :28:14.much better player on the stage than on the floor. He did not know how he

:28:15. > :28:19.would react last year, but he just feels to the Manor born on the

:28:20. > :28:26.Lakeside stage. And if he didn't know before, Martin Adams knows now

:28:27. > :28:30.that he is in a real battle. He reached the semifinals last year, he

:28:31. > :28:45.lost to Scott Mitchell. We know the power he has got.

:28:46. > :29:23.Martin back in 260, Jeff will be back.

:29:24. > :29:33.This would feel good. Another one of those, has to move across the oche.

:29:34. > :29:47.Unlucky, just came off the barrel and went north of the wire.

:29:48. > :30:00.And it is there! Fifth leg, Martin to throw first, game on. There it

:30:01. > :30:07.is, we are going all the way in the second set. Martin Adams with the

:30:08. > :30:14.darts, throwing first. Must, you feel, not get broken here. From two

:30:15. > :30:17.set stone it is an awful long way back from somebody with the

:30:18. > :30:30.confidence of Jeff Smith. Throwing with confidence.

:30:31. > :30:34.Larry Butler there. Fellow North American. Travelled a long way, but

:30:35. > :30:53.they are getting results. Martin in trouble. Big, big trouble

:30:54. > :30:59.and only 26 with that visit. Actually, that was Jeff Smith's

:31:00. > :31:14.first maximum of the tournament and, what a time to throw it. Nothing

:31:15. > :31:24.Adams can do it it -- do about it. He's stuck on 320.

:31:25. > :31:33.Treble 16 would have left double 10. He'll be back. With dangerous darts

:31:34. > :31:47.for a two-set lead. Pressure darts now.

:31:48. > :32:03.Hit it in the last leg. Double 9. Yes. He's in trouble, is Martin

:32:04. > :32:22.Adams. Two sets down. Listen to the crowd. He's a cool customer, Jeff

:32:23. > :32:26.Smith. And he's the sort of player, when the finishing line homes into

:32:27. > :32:32.view, he gets better. He loves it up there. He was telling me, I said do

:32:33. > :32:36.you truly believe you are going to win this match and he goes

:32:37. > :32:40."absolutely 100%, the only person that matters whether I'm going to

:32:41. > :32:58.win or lose, and believe that, is me" and I do.

:32:59. > :33:03.He actually bought that car restoration business that he was

:33:04. > :33:08.working for when he came here last year. He'sny now the owner and he

:33:09. > :33:12.said business is going well, so A it relaxes him and B, it gives him time

:33:13. > :33:26.to focus on his darts which is the thing he loves. Certainly the engine

:33:27. > :33:37.is ticking here, that's for certain. Unlucky that, for Martin.

:33:38. > :33:51.Martin on 280. He's in desperate need of help. All of a sudden, the

:33:52. > :34:06.scoring has deserted him as well, Martin. Treble 16, double 18.

:34:07. > :34:13.He wanting double 9 when he comes back. But will he take it? Let us

:34:14. > :34:26.see if he's going to go straight for it. Yes. And the first leg of what

:34:27. > :34:36.could be the final set. Martin has to find a way to break the throw. Or

:34:37. > :34:45.he's out. Great match for the audience. Getting the best of order.

:34:46. > :34:50.I think they are a bit shell-shocked. They did not expect

:34:51. > :35:04.this. They did not expect Wolfie to struggle. He's being beaten up out

:35:05. > :35:24.there. Another maximum from Jeff Smith.

:35:25. > :35:35.701 points away from knocking out the top seed, Jeff Smith. This is

:35:36. > :35:47.just relentless, and you have to say, superb. 60 left after nine

:35:48. > :35:53.darts. Looking for 11-dart finish. Martin Adams treated us in the

:35:54. > :35:56.second set to a ten-darter. This is an 11-darter maybe. No. All of a

:35:57. > :36:14.sudden, a lifeline for Martin Adams. He's missed the treble 18. He's let

:36:15. > :36:19.Jeff Smith in again. That is a long way off.

:36:20. > :36:50.Just one leg away. To break of throw. Steady start.

:36:51. > :36:59.Still fighting back, is Martin. No question. Never gives in. He will

:37:00. > :37:10.keep fighting. To the very last dart.

:37:11. > :37:18.Early in the match, Adams was averaging north of 100, but as Jeff

:37:19. > :37:32.Smith's average has gone north, Martin's has gone south. It's all

:37:33. > :37:38.about hitting the doubles. Putting it right where he needs them.

:37:39. > :37:55.81. Is that enough? It's not a finish. Oh, dear.

:37:56. > :37:58.That is going to be for the match when he comes back. Shanghai for the

:37:59. > :38:12.match for Smith. There is the pressure applied from

:38:13. > :38:18.Wolfie. You would expect nothing less from him. Nothing he can do but

:38:19. > :38:28.watch, as Jeff Smith has a dart for the match and double top and hits

:38:29. > :38:34.it! Stunning, superb performance from Silencer. Who knows how far he

:38:35. > :38:45.can go this year if he keeps performing like that? ! Wolfie blown

:38:46. > :38:51.away. Ladies and gentlemen, we say goodbye to Wolfie, Martin Adams. But

:38:52. > :39:19.through to the second round, it's the Silencer, Jeff Smith!

:39:20. > :39:27.What a performance. Jeff Smith, we told you, a straight line of

:39:28. > :39:31.consistency. A robot. A machine! As cool as you like. The Silencer makes

:39:32. > :39:47.deowed rant sweat. -- deodorant sweat.

:39:48. > :39:54.Bobby George, the guy played for his 23rd time at the Lakeside. We saw

:39:55. > :39:58.with Jeff Smith on his debut, but even more Mr Consistent, that was

:39:59. > :40:01.sensationally cool playing? He got beat up. He should have won the

:40:02. > :40:05.first set though, he should have done. Missed seven doubles. Great

:40:06. > :40:10.scoring, I thought here we go, good match, but Jeff didn't miss a shot.

:40:11. > :40:17.And he never let him in, he never let him in. We said he gets 40-50%

:40:18. > :40:23.in the doubles, he did roughly that Jeff Smith, we said he'd average

:40:24. > :40:27.92-93 and he did that as well but the scoring was heavier, it was 107

:40:28. > :40:31.first nine-dart average so everything was working for him and

:40:32. > :40:36.he just has the bottle, Bob? Well, he can finish, can't he? Yes. This

:40:37. > :40:40.guy, he can score what he wants if you don't hit the double though you

:40:41. > :40:46.don't win. Wolfie just that little bit scruffy he was. Yes. On the

:40:47. > :40:50.scoring. He started off well and then Jeff got it at him after the

:40:51. > :40:56.second set. I want to show you the second set. You talk about the big

:40:57. > :41:01.finishes but, as you know, sometimes it's not those at all. He's got the

:41:02. > :41:06.last clutch dart and an all double, double 9 and he nails it. That's why

:41:07. > :41:09.he won that match? Yes, because he can hit any double. They are all the

:41:10. > :41:14.same size, they just live in different places. Luteally. I wish I

:41:15. > :41:21.could say the same about your house and mine. Let's hear from the

:41:22. > :41:27.Silencer Jeff Smith now. Congratulations. We said we let the

:41:28. > :41:33.audience know what you were capable of last year, but even by your

:41:34. > :41:37.wonderfully high consistent standards, well played? I'm still

:41:38. > :41:45.shaking like a leaf after playing Martin Adams. Shaking and doing

:41:46. > :41:50.Canada proud. This had flare, Jeff, let's have a look at your winning

:41:51. > :41:53.darts because this is a lovely champagne moment of was a game that

:41:54. > :42:01.was fizzy from start to finish from you. Shanghai nights; Shanghai

:42:02. > :42:08.afternoons, Jeff? ! That's my game. I'm the only person that has to

:42:09. > :42:14.believe in myself and I do. It's a fantastic philosophy to have. Is it

:42:15. > :42:19.that self-belief because we see players who hit 95, 96 averages,

:42:20. > :42:23.they come here and crumble. You are the opposite, you come here and

:42:24. > :42:27.thrive? I'm probably a more dangerous player on a stage than I

:42:28. > :42:31.am on the floor. I settle down when I play, I'm calm, I throw, I'm more

:42:32. > :42:40.nervous standing here than I was down there. Wolfie at the end was, I

:42:41. > :42:45.thought fantastic. He knew he was beaten up. He threw some fantastic

:42:46. > :42:50.scores, just missed some doubles? Yes, he really had a chance to pay

:42:51. > :42:54.me back a couple of times and I'm really surprised that he didn't. I'm

:42:55. > :42:59.lucky to be here. You made Bobby laugh. Bobby is enjoying darts, I

:43:00. > :43:03.know he is when he sits and laughs in his seat and you really enjoyed

:43:04. > :43:09.that? I did. The finishing was great. You must have thought when he

:43:10. > :43:13.started I'm in trouble here. You took your chances and thought, I

:43:14. > :43:18.know what I've got to do now, get if front of him, hit the doubles and

:43:19. > :43:23.that's exactly what you done, you never let him in, you never gave him

:43:24. > :43:28.a chance. He's too dangerous a player, if you give him an inch,

:43:29. > :43:32.he'll take a mile. If you have a chance, you have to beat him. Beat

:43:33. > :43:39.him up is the saying? Yes. Wolfie won't mind me saying

:43:40. > :43:47.that was quite a performance. Wolfie magnanimous at the end there and

:43:48. > :43:54.talking now. This guy is so magnanimous in

:43:55. > :43:56.defeat. Martin, you are conducting yourself fantastically well but you

:43:57. > :44:05.were just outclassed today weren't you? Well, yes, he played better

:44:06. > :44:10.than I did. At the treble I thought, I'm in trouble. I thought I'm really

:44:11. > :44:14.in trouble. He banged straight in the tops, you can't argue with that.

:44:15. > :44:18.The doubles just didn't go in for you? No, particularly early doors.

:44:19. > :44:22.The first set could have been a bit different if I hit the doubles, I

:44:23. > :44:26.had plenty of doubles. I didn't take 'em. But that's darts. What about

:44:27. > :44:30.the ten-darter, you always give the crowd something. We have got it

:44:31. > :44:35.there for you, look. Fantastic. I was hoping for a nine, but you know,

:44:36. > :44:42.when you hit the 180, you think, let's have a nine. Second shot, the

:44:43. > :44:49.145, or the 140 sorry, you know, a bit of a slip that one there really.

:44:50. > :44:54.That one went in sweet as a nut. I'd already said to little Richard, if I

:44:55. > :45:00.lose 61, I'm going the 45 route, bang straight in, beautiful. In

:45:01. > :45:05.practise last week,ifulry time I left 61 I kept it in and got the

:45:06. > :45:10.double straight in. The one I couldn't hit, straight in. Maybe we

:45:11. > :45:14.were thinking, this is going to go all the way, you've settled in and

:45:15. > :45:19.got your eye in, but again he didn't let you settle in, did he? No, he

:45:20. > :45:24.didn't let me settle in. We have seen a couple of games this week so

:45:25. > :45:27.far when the chances have been given to the opponents and maybe I gave

:45:28. > :45:32.him too many chances, not really sure, but the chances he had he

:45:33. > :45:35.played really well and dominated the game. You know what it takes to win

:45:36. > :45:40.the title and you know class when you see it. Is he good enough to win

:45:41. > :45:44.this for Canada? Without a doubt. If he plays like that, people will have

:45:45. > :45:47.to play really well to beat him. They have to be on the top of their

:45:48. > :45:52.game, probably playing the best darts of their life to beat him if

:45:53. > :45:57.he plays like that. Jeff was superb tonight. On behalf of everybody, we

:45:58. > :46:01.definitely want you back, so enjoy your 60th birthday in June and see

:46:02. > :46:04.you back next year Wolfie, thanks mate. Thank you very much indeed.

:46:05. > :46:09.Thank you. Wonderful stuff. What a gentleman. I

:46:10. > :46:14.love when Wolfie is smiling, we have had years when he wasn't. He is the

:46:15. > :46:18.heartbeat and even going out, he's still the heartbeat and we love

:46:19. > :46:27.having him on the balcony. He's entertaining. He could have got the

:46:28. > :46:30.nine darter but he got the ten. He was nice to Jeff what he said there,

:46:31. > :46:35.if he plays like that he could go all the way and win the title which

:46:36. > :46:39.is nice. He wasn't nasty, didn't say anything about Jeff, he blamed

:46:40. > :46:42.himself, he had the chances and he didn't take the chances, first set

:46:43. > :46:46.won that, different game. You told us at the start of the show that

:46:47. > :46:53.we'd get a bit more quality today and they both had an average of 93.

:46:54. > :46:59.Uncle Bobby strikes again, the Yoda of darts. I'm glad, that was a good

:47:00. > :47:03.match. We have had the Silencer already. Peter Sajwani we have next.

:47:04. > :47:18.Let's catch up with him. # I want it all

:47:19. > :47:22.# And I want it now... # I was thinking about lot of

:47:23. > :47:23.different tracks but I think that suits me, you just want it all and

:47:24. > :47:36.you want it now. I'm very impulsive, so I never know

:47:37. > :47:41.what is going to happen next. It's hard to describe it in words, the

:47:42. > :47:48.feeling you have. It's the best part. Wilson, the top seed, and he

:47:49. > :47:53.has all the Lakeside experience. I had nothing to lose. I mean, it's

:47:54. > :47:58.just amazing to play there against the number one seed. He started off

:47:59. > :48:06.brilliant. I think he won three legs to zero and had 111 average. Looking

:48:07. > :48:11.as though he's going to get battered. The commentator said it's

:48:12. > :48:15.going to be the fastest knockout in the history of Lakeside. If I heard

:48:16. > :48:24.that, I would never come back from that situation. Everything went so

:48:25. > :48:36.fast. Suddenly I had top for match and took it out with the first dart.

:48:37. > :48:41.The match to Peter Sajwani. I was leaving my darts on the table and I

:48:42. > :48:44.felt my knees were going so I felt like I hope I don't pass out now. I

:48:45. > :48:53.don't know, fire service so emotional. Feels a little unreal

:48:54. > :48:57.when I look back to it. If you're gonna be there and play, you got to

:48:58. > :49:02.play against the biggest names. When I get in the zone, I'm just playing

:49:03. > :49:09.my own darts. If I get a chance, I believe I can take it.

:49:10. > :49:13.I think I can beat all the players that's in the tournament,

:49:14. > :49:19.absolutely. Looking for a repeat 12 months later. But he's going up

:49:20. > :49:23.against a real pedigree I think in Mark McGeeney, albeit an unknown

:49:24. > :49:29.making his debut. But he was on the England team that won the WBO World

:49:30. > :49:34.Cup. He can play with the very best of England and, this is the one name

:49:35. > :49:41.that Bobby George said to me before a dart was thrown, keep a little eye

:49:42. > :49:48.on double M, Mark McGeeney. Very, very good dart player. I watched him

:49:49. > :49:52.in tournaments and he's very consistent, good scorer, good

:49:53. > :49:55.finishing. He's played van Gerwen. I know it's only fun darts but you

:49:56. > :50:01.have to play well to beat Michael. He can play, this boy. I met him, he

:50:02. > :50:06.is ultra--nice, very softly spoken. So what I want to know is, is he

:50:07. > :50:10.going to bring a Jeff Smith mentality or go with the debutantes

:50:11. > :50:14.who get swallowed with the atmosphere? He said he's looking

:50:15. > :50:18.forward to it. He's not nervous, plays all year to get here, he's

:50:19. > :50:22.look forward to it. He's the sort of guy that could come up here with a

:50:23. > :50:26.nine-darter or he may not handle the pressure. But he's got the quality

:50:27. > :50:33.in his darts to play very well and he plays the same all the time. Let

:50:34. > :50:38.us see how it goes. 90-odd average. In terms of Peter Sajwani. He does a

:50:39. > :50:43.little jig here and a walk on like this and he's Smiley and chatty and

:50:44. > :50:47.we love it, it brightens up our afternoon. But if you are playing

:50:48. > :50:52.against that, can that be as offputing a tactic as the player

:50:53. > :50:56.who's slow and does a Hanky? If you are playing well, it puts you off,

:50:57. > :51:00.they can do what they want and you could still hit the shots so it's up

:51:01. > :51:06.to the person. What you do is up to you. If it gets in your head he's

:51:07. > :51:13.done the job. Absolutely and the walk-on could last as long as the

:51:14. > :51:18.set. The Master of Ceromonies now. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the

:51:19. > :51:28.2016 BDO World Championships and, we are here at the home of World Darts,

:51:29. > :51:34.the Lakeside! Let me introduce to the stage a BDO

:51:35. > :51:40.world hundredship semi-finalists, the classic champion, the reigning

:51:41. > :52:11.British Open champion, it's England's Gladiator, Mark McGeeney.

:52:12. > :52:52.We now introduce a former for that Lee know former Open Champion, he's

:52:53. > :52:53.the Baltic and Scandinavian regional qualifier, Sweden's Chatterbox,

:52:54. > :54:21.Peter Sajwani. Peter Sajwani is up. It's Chatterbox

:54:22. > :54:31.v Gladiator which sounds like the worths movie ever made. A little R

:54:32. > :54:36.R in the commentary box now. COMMENTATOR: Mark, the 43-year-old

:54:37. > :54:42.from Stockport, he'd be the favourite, the Lancashire County

:54:43. > :54:47.player. But we saw the victory that Peter got against James Wilson, came

:54:48. > :54:54.through a preliminary, so this is his second this year. He beat Sam

:54:55. > :54:58.Hewson in the preliminary rounds. He never shuts up, always got a smile

:54:59. > :55:02.on his face, cheerful sort of soul. He's the Swedish national champion,

:55:03. > :55:15.also runner-up in the Lithuanian Open. Beaten by Darius Labanowska

:55:16. > :55:19.there. Mark McGeeney, he won the British Open, beating Ross

:55:20. > :55:22.Montgomerie, Martin Phillips, Gary Robson and Scott Waite, so that

:55:23. > :55:27.shows that he can perform at the highest level. He is a talent.

:55:28. > :55:31.Whether or not he's going to be able to bring to it the big stage remains

:55:32. > :55:36.to be seen, but I suspect that he might.

:55:37. > :55:43.Reach the semis of the BDO as well and had victory over Glenn Durrant

:55:44. > :55:49.on the way to that. Lost out to Geert De Vos. If he can handle the

:55:50. > :55:55.occasion, he's got the sort of game which could go a long way in these

:55:56. > :55:57.Championships. Thank you ladies and gentlemen, Peter to throw first,

:55:58. > :56:10.first leg, first set. Game on. One of these days, Peter Sajwani's

:56:11. > :56:16.walk-on music is going to run out before he even get on to the stage.

:56:17. > :56:21.But great to see his infection enthusiasm and a big favourite

:56:22. > :56:27.already here. I'm looking forward to a first Lakeside glimpse of this

:56:28. > :56:35.guy, Mark McGeeney. -- infectious enthusiasm. Victory over Scott Waits

:56:36. > :56:42.in the Open final is an indication that he is playing well. Waits has

:56:43. > :56:48.looked as good as anybody at Lakeside this year. Sajwani loved

:56:49. > :56:58.his walk-on. A smattering of admirers as well.

:56:59. > :57:02.19s are proving popular early on. 20 is working better though for the

:57:03. > :57:35.Swede. A couple of occasions of the BDO,

:57:36. > :57:39.but he doesn't play any more nowadays, but Sajwani is only too

:57:40. > :57:44.well aware of how good those predecessors were, I'm sure. Those

:57:45. > :58:12.two, the only two Swedes to reach the last four here at Lakeside.

:58:13. > :58:44.Not quite settled into it yet. 113. No check out now.

:58:45. > :58:58.Sajwani for 92. Treble 20 he's looking for. Double 12, good dart.

:58:59. > :59:02.And that's good finishing. Looking for the treble 20. Treble 16

:59:03. > :59:21.and that was lined up. Excellent finishing. McGeeney won't

:59:22. > :59:26.feel as though he's in the contest until he's on the board.

:59:27. > :59:52.McGeeney not really getting the scores we know he's capable of yet.

:59:53. > :59:56.I think he's a bit nervous up there. The average is less than 70 but it's

:59:57. > :00:06.early stages and plenty of time to settle into the match.

:00:07. > :00:21.The tonne starting to come for the Swede. McGinley hasn't settled yet.

:00:22. > :00:25.The winner of this one will be facing big Scott Mitchell, the

:00:26. > :00:28.defending champion. I wonder if he is watching. He might be looking at

:00:29. > :00:33.one of his favourite James Bond movies. He says he has not really

:00:34. > :00:40.been watching the darts while he has been here, he has been focusing on

:00:41. > :00:52.his own game, sitting back, having a pint and watching some James Bond.

:00:53. > :01:07.We are only talking fractions, but that is the game.

:01:08. > :01:18.McGeeney, remember, with the throw here, really needs another of those.

:01:19. > :01:24.Yes! That will settle them down, that he may not get a shot at it.

:01:25. > :01:37.Another of those would leave a couple of 6s.

:01:38. > :01:54.He needs treble 18 for the bull's-eye. Yes! 122! Beautiful

:01:55. > :01:55.check-out! He is into the game. A huge smile, he enjoyed that.

:01:56. > :02:08.Fabulous. Absolutely nailed it. A couple of

:02:09. > :02:19.decent finishes, 92, 120 two. Absolutely. The game is warming up.

:02:20. > :02:31.Some jitters from both fellows in the opening leg. But 122 checkout

:02:32. > :02:42.from the Gini -- from McGeeney will get him right into it.

:02:43. > :02:51.Had some success around the circuit this year, or last year, I should

:02:52. > :02:57.say, Mark McGeeney. And also playing in exhibitions. He beat Michael van

:02:58. > :03:03.Gerwen, it was a fun match but if you beat him in any kind of match it

:03:04. > :03:08.shows you can throw a bit, you do not just rock up and beat van

:03:09. > :03:15.Gerwen! But unless he has had a very, very bad day! McGeeney is

:03:16. > :03:17.playing well again, he has a great chance of breaking the throw. He

:03:18. > :03:31.will fancy this. That is a great first start. Looks

:03:32. > :03:42.like he is going 25. Oh, double 18, what a checkout this would be. Just

:03:43. > :03:43.by the width of the wire. He will come back for three darts at double

:03:44. > :04:11.18 for a break. To go ahead. He was not sure if it

:04:12. > :04:19.was in! There it was! The first one was a good marker. McGeeney ahead

:04:20. > :04:29.with the break, no. And now he can take this opening set.

:04:30. > :04:38.The 11th seed is throwing well. Since that 122, he has settled down

:04:39. > :04:45.and the belief is coursing through his veins. Especially as a

:04:46. > :04:52.debutante, you don't really feel you are in a match and tell you are on

:04:53. > :04:59.the board. Fish until you are. What a transformation. Look at this. That

:05:00. > :05:13.is Mark 's partner, and Marie, on the left. -- Anne-Marie. She is

:05:14. > :05:18.sitting beside Lisa lashed in -- Lisa Ashton, the number one seed in

:05:19. > :05:27.the women's tournament. Lancashire lassies.

:05:28. > :05:39.This match is Stockport versus Stockholm, in fact! Tony O'Shea

:05:40. > :05:44.territory, stop board. -- Stockport. I wonder if he is a Stockport County

:05:45. > :05:56.man? More likely Man United Manchester City, I bet.

:05:57. > :06:05.Look like a miscalculation. Yes, definitely. He is not in tears, he

:06:06. > :06:15.is grimacing, he can't believe what he has done.

:06:16. > :06:22.He has got a ready smile, hasn't he? Some questionable maths, and here we

:06:23. > :07:03.are. Should have done that before, he

:07:04. > :07:22.says! Mark is a likeable sort of character

:07:23. > :07:32.on the stage. He is enjoying this match as long tonne much as Sajwani

:07:33. > :07:40.enjoyed his walk on. -- as much as Sajwani enjoyed. A succession of big

:07:41. > :07:50.numbers are pushing his average up now into the high 80s.

:07:51. > :08:04.Scoring well, but at that. -- look at that. If he keeps hitting like

:08:05. > :08:10.this he will be comfortably into the 90s before too long. Looking like

:08:11. > :08:15.favourite to hold his throw in the opening leg of the second set. First

:08:16. > :08:17.three sets, taking a leg the next round and reserving a berth against

:08:18. > :08:28.Scott Mitchell. He will have quite a few darts up

:08:29. > :09:05.that, leaves 125. 74, when the Gini comes back and he

:09:06. > :09:15.can probably still have 9-darter back. -- when McGeeney comes back.

:09:16. > :09:28.Good stuff! The Gladiator has four checkout excesses out of eight

:09:29. > :09:34.attempt, he is scoring heavily now. Sajwani picks itself that Ritchie

:09:35. > :09:42.soon, McGeeney will be surging away in this match.

:09:43. > :09:50.Some new names coming through, Mark McGeeney is certainly one of them.

:09:51. > :09:56.We have seen one or two established stars exiting already this year. And

:09:57. > :10:03.McGeeney wanting to show that he is part of a new generation. Bobby

:10:04. > :10:14.George called it. Keep your eye on him. You can't take your eyes off

:10:15. > :10:21.him at the moment. The girl Sajwani is not throwing well. -- Sajwani is

:10:22. > :10:40.not. Sajwani all over the place again.

:10:41. > :10:47.Throwing badly. And the body language, he is just meandering

:10:48. > :10:49.around the stage. McGeeney on 267. Sajwani looks like a man who does

:10:50. > :11:02.not want to be there. He smashed James Wilson last year

:11:03. > :11:11.after Wilson got off to that flying start. He can play, this lad. He is

:11:12. > :11:12.only averaging 73 at the moment, he is way, way short of where he can

:11:13. > :11:25.be. He showed glimpses in Hezbollah in a

:11:26. > :11:33.rerun victory of what he is capable of, but we have not seen anything of

:11:34. > :11:40.that today -- he showed glimpses in the preliminary round victory.

:11:41. > :11:46.Another pretty weak visit from Sajwani. Sajwani taking forever to

:11:47. > :12:13.get off the oche. A huge advantage against the throw

:12:14. > :12:25.former Gini to go to a clear second set. -- for McGeeney to go. Can't

:12:26. > :12:31.seem to get stop -- can't seem to get this.

:12:32. > :12:43.Almost another big checkout for McGeeney.

:12:44. > :12:55.You wouldn't expect him to have a shot at this finish

:12:56. > :13:06.stop not happy with that. Sajwani, who has not looked like winning this

:13:07. > :13:14.leg at any stage, finds itself with a chance. Oh, that was not good.

:13:15. > :13:53.27 darts, he is still not there. Not one for the highlights programme,

:13:54. > :14:01.this leg! Say what you like! I don't know where that one went.

:14:02. > :14:07.There will be a fuel around the pubs and clubs watching this thinking, I

:14:08. > :14:13.can do this. Sajwani trying to and clubs watching this thinking, I

:14:14. > :14:19.the crowd. Trying to lighten the mood little bit. McGeeney smiles, he

:14:20. > :14:23.is not too worried about the antics of his opponent. I can think of

:14:24. > :14:36.another couple of players who might not have enjoyed that. . Number 30.

:14:37. > :14:38.Blimey! Try it with Ross Montgomery, Ted Hankey... Might have been

:14:39. > :14:59.received differently. Well, that leg was... Different.

:15:00. > :15:08.McGeeney gets it, though. Break of throw, 2-0 up. The kind of leg of

:15:09. > :15:19.darts that impose scheduling problems. That is a TV term, to the

:15:20. > :15:24.own initiative eight -- to the uninitiated, it is when programmes

:15:25. > :15:31.following needs to be postponed or cancelled. 180! The first maximum of

:15:32. > :15:53.the match. The referee was not joining in the

:15:54. > :15:57.liberty of the moment. -- levity. Fairly stony faced as Sajwani was

:15:58. > :16:08.milking the applause. He is a good lad, Anthony, that referee, despite

:16:09. > :16:12.looking a little bit dour. It is almost as of Sajwani has said, I am

:16:13. > :16:17.playing rubbish, I am just going to have a laugh. All very well, but

:16:18. > :16:26.McGeeney has a job to do when needs to maintain concentration. -- and

:16:27. > :16:31.needs to. Ted Hankey was throwing, by his standards, abysmally,

:16:32. > :16:33.Phillips had to keep it together and just about manage to do so. Not

:16:34. > :17:02.always easy in those circumstances. Bogey number, no checkout.

:17:03. > :17:27.Sajwani has got an opportunity. It is erratic. He is playing with

:17:28. > :17:33.what could charitably be called a bit of a lack of focus, is Peter

:17:34. > :17:50.Sajwani. This for the second set. There it is. He is winning easily.

:17:51. > :17:56.Chatterbox on the rocks. And McGeeney is under no real pressure.

:17:57. > :18:02.It's took him at first leg to settle, Sajwani took it with a 92

:18:03. > :18:20.but has done nothing since. Chatterbox silenced.

:18:21. > :18:27.One of the Dutch contingent watching on. Jeffrey de Graaf. He was in

:18:28. > :18:56.action yesterday. Fans down from Whitby. A little

:18:57. > :19:03.Whitby town sign. Lovely place, Whitby, if you have never been.

:19:04. > :19:18.That is more like it, Peter! Again, a bit of a display of emotion. They

:19:19. > :19:28.will be back for 142. -- he will. Boy, could he do with this. Treble

:19:29. > :19:33.20. That would have left bull 16. That is more like it. Giving himself

:19:34. > :20:06.a potential checkout, 32. Second leg, marketed through first.

:20:07. > :20:20.Game on. -- second leg, Mark to throw first.

:20:21. > :20:29.Razma is in action later in a good-looking match against Gary

:20:30. > :20:35.Robson. He is not practising, he is right here watching this match.

:20:36. > :20:41.Razma, who qualified from the Baltic region, he is a BDO ranked qualifier

:20:42. > :20:59.ahead of Peter Sajwani. Sajwani has steadied the arm a

:21:00. > :21:08.little bit now. He looked as though he had almost given up in the last

:21:09. > :21:09.set, at one stage. His prospects of pulling this one around remain

:21:10. > :21:48.rather bleak. He is on 72, very makeable. Sajwani

:21:49. > :22:08.throws another bad dart. That is more like it. Treble 20 or treble

:22:09. > :22:16.12. Double 18. So, way off. That look like a good marker. 152 can't

:22:17. > :22:37.be done, McGeeney will come back again looking for the double 18.

:22:38. > :23:12.McGeeney is in the cruise mode. He looks as if he has another gear that

:23:13. > :23:30.he can go into if necessary. Sajwani is not really pushing him.

:23:31. > :23:36.The crowd are ready and braced with 180 signs. McGeeney has not produced

:23:37. > :23:56.one of those yet. England fans, appropriately dressed

:23:57. > :24:02.for the darts. He was looking for his first maximum and thought he had

:24:03. > :24:08.got it, I think. McGeeney was part of last year 's victorious England

:24:09. > :24:12.World Cup team. He will be coming back with an opportunity to

:24:13. > :24:27.checkout. This is a chance to strike against the darts.

:24:28. > :24:39.Peter has had a sneak preview of what could be. Mimic the first two.

:24:40. > :24:56.Oh, he is playing his own game here, Sajwani.

:24:57. > :25:05.That puts him just about there. He is 2-1 up, a break of the throw, now

:25:06. > :25:14.he has the arrows for a straight sets win. It is not done yet, but

:25:15. > :25:22.this has been surprisingly straightforward for Mark McGeeney,

:25:23. > :25:26.who has thrown well. He has met Cyr resistance from his Swedish

:25:27. > :25:34.opponent, unfortunately. Look at the averages. -- he has met the road --

:25:35. > :25:46.no resistance. He looks a bit disconsolate. He

:25:47. > :25:48.knows he has not produced anything, really. The highlight of his day was

:25:49. > :26:04.the walk on. It lasted almost as long as this

:26:05. > :26:10.match. Mentally, I think Sajwani is back in the bar. Well, he will be

:26:11. > :26:20.able to experience a bit of reality before too one, McGeeney is getting

:26:21. > :26:23.near. Chatterbox on the rocks, McGeeney 168 points away from

:26:24. > :26:52.winning his first ever match at the Lakeside. No checkout.

:26:53. > :27:02.McGeeney will come back. 68 is the checkout. Treble 20, 44-macro. 16

:27:03. > :27:12.would leave double 16 for the victory. Oh, yes! You can't believe

:27:13. > :27:17.it. It was surprisingly straightforward. -- he can't believe

:27:18. > :27:24.it. Sajwani says, I'm going to knock you out. Peter, that is what he has

:27:25. > :27:33.done to you. The Gladiator stands tall, McGeeney makes his mark and

:27:34. > :27:40.cruises through to round two. Sweden's Peter Sajwani and England's

:27:41. > :28:02.Gladiator, Mark McGeeney! MUSIC PLAYS

:28:03. > :28:09.STUDIO: The joke on Peter Sajwani. Mark McGeeney in his first match has

:28:10. > :28:11.the last laugh here at the Lakeside in the first round. The punch line,

:28:12. > :28:30.how straightforward was that?! Bobby, we will get to how a debutant

:28:31. > :28:34.plays against that type of, shall we do is the word character, for now,

:28:35. > :28:40.but there were little glimpses from Mark McGeeney about the type of

:28:41. > :28:45.player you talked about? He started off scruffy, wasted a few doubles,

:28:46. > :28:49.but he held it together. When Peter was mucking about in front of him he

:28:50. > :28:54.ignored him completely. He was not pushed. It was like a practice

:28:55. > :29:04.session. Nobody pushed him. Not great averages. You know I am not a

:29:05. > :29:08.killjoy if anything I go the other way, but where is the line? When I

:29:09. > :29:13.was watching that and they were having a joke of a leg, and in Paris

:29:14. > :29:18.meant the leg, I am not sure you should be doing this when you are

:29:19. > :29:22.throwing three more darts at a W should have taken out ages ago at

:29:23. > :29:27.this level. I think there is a lot more to it than just playing the

:29:28. > :29:31.fool. When you're averaging 74, I find that different than when you

:29:32. > :29:37.are doing it in a good game and the averages are good. He tried to

:29:38. > :29:40.change the game around for himself, all the energy with dancing around,

:29:41. > :29:51.he should have put it into the darts. How did he handle it? He

:29:52. > :29:58.tried to put him off a bit. It didn't help him, anyway. Mark just

:29:59. > :30:05.focused on the game. He obviously knew he would do that. Lets talk to

:30:06. > :30:10.the man himself, come on in. The first time I met him was just

:30:11. > :30:13.yesterday. Congratulations. Talk as through your first Lakeside

:30:14. > :30:18.experience of winning on the stage? I have never been as nervous in my

:30:19. > :30:24.life as I was there, it is surreal, I was shaking. You are having to

:30:25. > :30:28.handle antics, we think, it is OK to have a laugh but we were showing...

:30:29. > :30:32.Showboating when doubles were being missed, you were looking down and

:30:33. > :30:37.trying to use the way, you must be pleased with how you handle that? I

:30:38. > :30:42.handled it well. I have seen his tactics before. He is a lovely bloke

:30:43. > :30:49.but I thought, Lib Dem, don't get involved. Concentrate on your darts.

:30:50. > :30:54.-- looked down, don't get involved. That nice ton-plus finish must have

:30:55. > :30:58.helped? There is your 18, first of all. Look at that, snake eyes!

:30:59. > :31:11.Luckily gently! I didn't think I'd even win a leg.

:31:12. > :31:15.When I got that first, I was relax and still nervous. You stood

:31:16. > :31:18.alongside, which you have done, played with Scott Mitchell. Yes. You

:31:19. > :31:22.are going to have to play against him. Now, I have a little inkling

:31:23. > :31:26.that playing against a more straightforward player like that,

:31:27. > :31:30.he's going to hit an average of over 90, it's going to lift your game?

:31:31. > :31:33.Yes, I know Scott. He played pairs together in the World Cup. He's

:31:34. > :31:36.fantastic, I love him to bits and we are going to have a proper game of

:31:37. > :31:42.darts we are, it's going to be fun. I'm excited about that one, Bobby,

:31:43. > :31:46.it was only an 85 average but look at the first nine, the tonnes, he

:31:47. > :31:53.was hitting those and certainly enough glimpses of this man to be

:31:54. > :32:01.excited. And you told me I wasn't nervous! I was always worried about

:32:02. > :32:06.the very first game on the Lakeside because I've watched since I was a

:32:07. > :32:11.kid. To get the first win under my belt, we'll see where we go from

:32:12. > :32:14.here. Would you like to see your final darts again because that's

:32:15. > :32:19.always a moment? Oh, yes. There you go. You've messed that up now, you

:32:20. > :32:26.are never going to do it. One dart at it. I couldn't believe that. That

:32:27. > :32:34.was just surreal. I've actually won a game on the Lakeside stage, it's

:32:35. > :32:38.amazing. Part of the tournament now. I can concentrate on winning the

:32:39. > :32:43.whole lot. If I can play like that, I can win it. I'm liking the class

:32:44. > :32:46.of your top, black-and-white and beautiful. As the name would

:32:47. > :32:50.suggest, representing England but the Irish connection as well, so a

:32:51. > :32:53.mix of the family, so the reason for people to support you, not just near

:32:54. > :33:00.the Lakeside but across the Irish Sea as well? I'm a proud Irishman.

:33:01. > :33:07.Irish blood English heart whatever it is. That's it. Wonderful stuff.

:33:08. > :33:10.We'll go all over the place for you when it comes to England, Ireland

:33:11. > :33:34.and Newcastle. Newcastle in New South Wales in Australia though,

:33:35. > :33:45.home to Corrinne Hammond. This is the ladies details.

:33:46. > :33:59.Looking forward to seeing Lorraine Winstanley this year, always

:34:00. > :34:05.knocking on the door. Anne-Lou was a Peters knocked out.

:34:06. > :34:07.New Zealand's a far place to travel in the men's draw. We have got

:34:08. > :34:12.Australians in there as well and we are going to Australia now. Let's

:34:13. > :34:18.find out a bit more about Corrine Hammond. Corrine, welcome to

:34:19. > :34:23.Lakeside and an incredible Lakeside debut. Are you feeling up for this?

:34:24. > :34:27.I'm feeling a little bit nervous at the moment because it's very

:34:28. > :34:32.surreal, like nothing that we have at home. Now that I've been here a

:34:33. > :34:35.couple of days, I think I'll be good to play. What have you made of the

:34:36. > :34:41.atmosphere over at the arena because I've seen you there in the practise

:34:42. > :34:45.area a couple of days? It's very different to what I expected. I have

:34:46. > :34:50.seen bits and pieces of Lakeside on TV at home. Only short parts. The

:34:51. > :34:54.way that it's portrayed on television is nothing like what it

:34:55. > :35:00.actually is when you're there in the crowd.

:35:01. > :35:05.What was your instant reaction when you realised or you were told you're

:35:06. > :35:12.going to the World Championship, you've made it, you've qualified? I

:35:13. > :35:17.was kind of like erm yes, so this is real what's going to happen now, I

:35:18. > :35:20.don't know if I can do this. I'm very excited, very proud of the fact

:35:21. > :35:24.I've been able to qualify but it's like, this is real, what is it going

:35:25. > :35:30.to be like when I get there. Let's look on the positives from your

:35:31. > :35:33.perspective. Anastasia's been knocked out, Fallon's been knocked

:35:34. > :35:36.out, we have seen shocks in the women's draw so although Deta will

:35:37. > :35:42.start as the favourite, we have already seen that the form book can

:35:43. > :35:47.be upset as far as the women's darts is concerned? That can be said about

:35:48. > :35:51.every game. Everyone's playing their own game, we all have three darts,

:35:52. > :35:55.it's about who performs on the day so anything is possible.

:35:56. > :36:00.Are you looking forward to that roar when you walk out because you will

:36:01. > :36:03.get a great reception. People really appreciate at Lakeside those who've

:36:04. > :36:09.travelled an awfully long way to get here. That's probably what I'm most

:36:10. > :36:12.nervous about really. It's like nothing that I would have ever

:36:13. > :36:16.experienced and I think that that's what will probably make me more

:36:17. > :36:19.nervous than anything is to think that there are going to be all those

:36:20. > :36:23.people that are going to be watching. I hope for your sake that

:36:24. > :36:27.you can enjoy it because you have work sod hard to get here. The very

:36:28. > :36:31.best of luck. Thank you. If she plays darts as well as she

:36:32. > :36:38.talks, she'll be doing well. Wonderful interview and, you know,

:36:39. > :36:47.she is going to be spurred on, Rob is right, by saying Fallon and

:36:48. > :36:50.Anastasia out. Why not. She's qualified and probably having the

:36:51. > :37:00.tournaments that our girls are playing. Probably a new thing for

:37:01. > :37:04.her. But I've never seen that lady play so I can't comment on how she's

:37:05. > :37:14.going to play. A bit of the unknown and we can't say that about Deta of

:37:15. > :37:22.course. She's won so many titles in the last 12 months, eight, nine,

:37:23. > :37:27.ten, 11, 12, it keeps going. Little Richard introduced all the players

:37:28. > :37:34.and it took us a minute and a half to read out what she's won, she's

:37:35. > :37:40.the Jimmy White of ladies darts and she needs to win here. She has her

:37:41. > :37:44.chance, she's a greater player, wins loads and loads of tournaments but

:37:45. > :37:49.don't have the luck here, I say luck because you can't be that good all

:37:50. > :37:53.year and then perform here. So our hearts are in our mouth every time

:37:54. > :37:56.we watch her. Yes, you think, she's going to go and win this, and then

:37:57. > :37:59.something happens. I don't know, it's one of those things that in

:38:00. > :38:06.darts you can be the best player in the world until you come here. It's

:38:07. > :38:09.on the day. Absolutely. We believe in her, we believe she can win the

:38:10. > :38:15.title, but does she believe in herself? That's always been the

:38:16. > :38:21.thing to see it all the way through. Let's get down to Richard Ashdown.

:38:22. > :38:25.Ladies and gentlemen, this is the 2016 Lakeside World Championships

:38:26. > :38:33.and we continue with our ladies event here at the home of World

:38:34. > :38:38.Darts, the Lakeside! We now introduce to the stage a

:38:39. > :38:43.twice world Masters Champion, twice a Lakeside World Championship

:38:44. > :38:46.finalist, the current holder of 13 world ranking titles, she's the

:38:47. > :39:16.reigning British Open Champion, it's England's Dark Destroyer, Deta

:39:17. > :40:05.Hedman! We now introduce the world's Number

:40:06. > :40:10.Ten and the current holder of seven world ranking titles, she's the

:40:11. > :40:13.reigning Australian Masters Champion, from New South Wales, it's

:40:14. > :41:05.Corrine Hammond! Well, we know Deta Hedman has the

:41:06. > :41:12.head for the Lakeside heights but too often it turns into a nightmare

:41:13. > :41:18.for her. Let's head into the commentary box. High fives from

:41:19. > :41:23.Hammond on the walk-on. And, let's be honest, you were dancing along to

:41:24. > :41:28.Deta's walk-on weren't you, just a little bit. Australia's Corrine

:41:29. > :41:33.Hammond then, one of three debutantes in the women's draw this

:41:34. > :41:40.year, seven titles this season. The second Australian woman to appear

:41:41. > :41:46.here at the Lakeside. And the reigning Australian Masters

:41:47. > :41:50.Champion. But boy, she's up against something today. Hugely popular,

:41:51. > :41:56.very familiar figure at the Lakeside. Deta Hedman, third seed

:41:57. > :42:03.this year having made the top seed in each of the last four. Twice a

:42:04. > :42:07.runner-up in 2012, 2014 and she's lost actually to Lisa Ashton in the

:42:08. > :42:12.last three years here, the last 16, the final of 2014 and the

:42:13. > :42:24.quarter-final three years ago. It's Hedman against Hammond.

:42:25. > :42:30.Corrine to throw first. Game on. Here we go, a place in the

:42:31. > :42:36.quarter-finals at stake. It's the first to two sets and each set is

:42:37. > :42:42.the best of five legs or a race to three, if you prefer. Talking to

:42:43. > :42:46.Deat only about 25 minutes ago, I said, how are you feeling this year,

:42:47. > :42:58.Deta, about time you won this and she looked at me and she Saws, I'm

:42:59. > :43:03.just very tired. -- she said. The first three darts tell a different

:43:04. > :43:08.story although it didn't bode well. If you are going to throw a top 140

:43:09. > :43:12.every time you visit, you can be as tired as you want. I said what do

:43:13. > :43:17.you mean tired, tired of darts, tired of the whole things and she

:43:18. > :43:22.said no, just sometimes people get tired and I'm tired. I said, but

:43:23. > :43:25.surely you will get a shot of adrenaline when you walk on the

:43:26. > :43:28.stage and she said, I kind of hope so. For her sake, I kind of hope she

:43:29. > :43:42.has. With two commentators in the

:43:43. > :43:48.commentary box whose job gets them up at 4. 30, we can have sympathy.

:43:49. > :43:50.Only one of those also doing their day job as well as this. That's very

:43:51. > :44:05.true - you can have that one! Hedman making slight inroads against

:44:06. > :44:13.the darts. Hammond yet to get the scoring going at all. Corrine

:44:14. > :44:19.Abraham comes to... Did I just call her Corrine Abraham. Corrine Abraham

:44:20. > :44:23.is, I'm sure you know, the British Iron Man triathlete who won the

:44:24. > :44:27.Australian Iron Man last year so I see Corrine and Australia and

:44:28. > :44:31.immediately think Abraham. Corrine Hammond however is making her

:44:32. > :44:34.Lakeside debut so while she hasn't settled, sometimes it takes a leg or

:44:35. > :44:44.two when playing on this stage for the first time. Glad we cleared that

:44:45. > :44:48.one up. Way back and fairly erratic at the moment unfortunately, the

:44:49. > :45:09.Aussie and looking a little embarrassed actually.

:45:10. > :45:18.Not a whole lot better from Deta in all honesty. 140 with the adrenaline

:45:19. > :45:25.surging around after the walk-ones, but after that, no treble yet. And

:45:26. > :45:43.Corrine is yet to find that middle bit. That's more like it. One the

:45:44. > :46:02.other side would be nice. On a finish then, Deta.

:46:03. > :46:12.94 to break it. She'll be back there, maybe single 16 here, yes.

:46:13. > :46:18.Treble 20, treble 19, it's the second highest check out there is.

:46:19. > :46:21.Wouldn't it be extraordinary if she took that out having failed to find

:46:22. > :46:30.a treble yet. Still hasn't quite settled. We are joined in the

:46:31. > :46:37.commentary box by two referees! What have we said? ! Double 10 for Hedman

:46:38. > :46:50.to strike first. One more shot at it. Well, a glimmer here. But, as

:46:51. > :46:54.you say, hasn't troubled the treble yet. Oh, there we go. Double 16 she

:46:55. > :47:05.needs. Oh! That would have been the steal of

:47:06. > :47:07.all steals. Double 5 for Deta Hedman for the first leg of the match. No

:47:08. > :47:23.mistake at all. I bet she's pleased to hear that.

:47:24. > :47:30.She's been brilliant on this stage, Deta. She's also been, I don't like

:47:31. > :47:51.to say nervous, but nervous. Pleased to say the reffee's have now

:47:52. > :48:00.left us so we can relax again. With thumbs up as well. Whatever we did,

:48:01. > :48:05.we have been forgiven! 91 ranking titles, extraordinary. More than

:48:06. > :48:18.Trina Gulliver. That's a lot of competitions.

:48:19. > :48:31.She beat Gulliver in the Northern Ireland Open fienl I believe, one of

:48:32. > :48:36.her 13 titles in 2015. -- Northern Ireland Open Final I believe. Third

:48:37. > :48:41.straight British Open also in 2015. But she's only been to the final

:48:42. > :48:46.here at Lakeside once. She looked like she was going to win it as well

:48:47. > :48:51.in 2014 against Lisa Ashton. She was two sets up and on the brink.

:48:52. > :49:04.Lisa came back to win that final 3-2. Then she beat Deta again 2-1.

:49:05. > :49:28.That was in the first round here last year.

:49:29. > :49:44.Good visit from Deta Hedman. Leaves 82.

:49:45. > :49:53.So bull treble 14 are the two options with the first dart. Double

:49:54. > :50:11.top she's left. Oh, yes. Nicely done. Game on. Very nice finish.

:50:12. > :50:19.That's better from Corrine as well. It does sometimes take a couple of

:50:20. > :50:24.legs to settle, but the trouble is, when you are a race to two sets, you

:50:25. > :50:37.can't afford more than a couple of legs. Especially when Deta's finding

:50:38. > :50:42.her best form. Deta. If you don't get going fairly swiftly - here we

:50:43. > :50:45.go - much better. If you don't get going swiftly against Deta Hedman,

:50:46. > :50:59.you're in trouble. But that's much more like it.

:51:00. > :51:15.137 and 140 in this leg already. I think this match is personaling up a

:51:16. > :51:18.bit. The trouble is starting to come now for Corrine Hammond. She needs

:51:19. > :51:30.to string a few together to really give Deta something to think about.

:51:31. > :51:41.That strayed into the treble 1. So Hammond with a bit of daylight here.

:51:42. > :51:49.Only 55 but she does visibly look to have settled.

:51:50. > :51:55.Deta needs a big visit to apply pressure here, needs to force her

:51:56. > :52:04.way in-between those two. Unable to do so. Six darts at least at 136 for

:52:05. > :52:09.Corrine Hammond, treble 20 the shot. Another one of those would leave a

:52:10. > :52:15.couple of eights. Oh, yes, double 8 for a 136. She likes these big

:52:16. > :52:18.finishes. That's a couple of times already she's nearly taken out a

:52:19. > :52:21.three-figure finish and she'll be back for that double 8 because

:52:22. > :52:34.Deta's nowhere in this leg. Corrine from Newcastle in New South

:52:35. > :52:49.Wales. To get on the board in this match has to shuffle across the

:52:50. > :52:53.oche. And she finds the double. She'd missed five darts before that.

:52:54. > :53:18.But life suddenly feels a lot better.

:53:19. > :53:27.They call her Rinnie, Corrine. And she's got support in the shape of

:53:28. > :53:58.her adoptive nan Lynn. It's better from Hammond as well.

:53:59. > :54:04.One of three debutantes in the women's draw. No first timer's won

:54:05. > :54:11.the women's title since you know who, Trina Gulliver back in 2001,

:54:12. > :54:15.that's the scale of the task. Some debutant was going to win it in

:54:16. > :54:25.2001. It being the first ever world title. On the women's side. Corrine

:54:26. > :54:29.Hammond, you know, she's one of the, if not the most successful darts

:54:30. > :54:33.players that New South Wales has ever produced, she's represented

:54:34. > :54:42.them 13 times, she's represented Australia seven times, she's the top

:54:43. > :54:49.player in Australia. She's played in three World Cups, three Asia-Pacific

:54:50. > :54:51.cups. As you mentioned, George, she holds eight ranking tights

:54:52. > :54:59.currently. So this for the first set, treble

:55:00. > :55:07.18s. Another attempt at treble 18. She'll

:55:08. > :55:20.probably stay there. She did get treble 18 but it took

:55:21. > :55:24.three darts. There is Trina, nine-times champion. Two treble 19s

:55:25. > :55:36.for the bull she was going. Got one of them. So to apply pressure. Oh,

:55:37. > :55:47.yes, consider the pressure applied. 68 for the set. Treble 20, yes.

:55:48. > :56:04.No! Single 18. Double 16 to take us into a deciding leg. That's a really

:56:05. > :56:10.good marker, she can use that and does.

:56:11. > :56:29.And that's to break. She's now throwing herself to take the set. I

:56:30. > :56:33.wonder if those early nerves have been replaced by excitement,

:56:34. > :56:43.anticipation, expectation, enjoyment?

:56:44. > :56:59.On the biggest stage against one of the biggest names as well. We saw

:57:00. > :57:04.you! I wonder if she was meant to be at work! ? Listen, you'll only get

:57:05. > :57:16.caught if the boss is watching darts.

:57:17. > :57:19.We see sirious outfits at the Lakeside. How about a pair of those?

:57:20. > :57:35.! When did she borrow those off you? !

:57:36. > :57:44.I wondered where they'd gone. So the deciding leg of the first set.

:57:45. > :57:49.Speaking of being spotted in the audience when perhaps you should be

:57:50. > :57:53.elsewhere, a few years ago, I was watching a televised darts event. I

:57:54. > :57:57.should have been interviewing a Rugby League coach, I told him I

:57:58. > :58:02.couldn't make it and then there I was wearing a Phil Taylor T-shirt

:58:03. > :58:08.and he texted me, the coach, who I was supposed to be interviewing. Who

:58:09. > :58:15.was he? Tony Smith, the former, at the time, Leeds Rhinos coach, now

:58:16. > :58:20.with Warrington Wolves. So that's where you've gone today is it George

:58:21. > :58:29.- hands up Tony, I said. Hi, Tony, if you are watching. He does love

:58:30. > :58:33.the darts actually. An Australian himself and now a British citizen in

:58:34. > :58:37.fact so I don't know who he'll be supporting today. This is nice. Her

:58:38. > :58:52.second of the match. Hammond first to a finish. And a

:58:53. > :58:57.decent one as well, 116. Twice we have seen her come to within a

:58:58. > :59:05.whisker of taking out a three-figure check out. This will be lovely for

:59:06. > :59:07.the set. Single 19. There it is. Double top she needs for the set for

:59:08. > :59:25.a 116. Well, Deta needs to take this out.

:59:26. > :59:34.Great start. Another one of those. Is that in? That leaves double 14.

:59:35. > :59:48.Oh, so close. This is a proper darts match now. Two 10s for the set.

:59:49. > :59:55.Double 15. Double 7. This will feel like a steal for Deta.

:59:56. > :00:05.CHEERING. And that's champion class. That's the kind of nerve that has

:00:06. > :00:26.won 91 ranking titles. Four darts from 148. To nick that

:00:27. > :00:34.set. Corinne had two at tops. Couldn't find it. Forgive me, one at

:00:35. > :00:39.tops and one at double 10. She needs to forget about that straight away,

:00:40. > :00:43.because Corinne Hammond has started playing some good stuff. That could

:00:44. > :01:05.perhaps, should have been her set. How is Corrine Hammond going to

:01:06. > :01:21.respond to that? Gave away the first couple of legs in the match really,

:01:22. > :01:25.then settled down. You would have required those outfits the first

:01:26. > :01:32.couple of days here. Tipping it down. A more picturesque scene

:01:33. > :01:40.around Frimley green in the last 48 hours or so. I think rain stopped

:01:41. > :01:53.play here a couple of years ago. Yes, the leaky roof wasn't it.

:01:54. > :01:59.Good leg for Hammond against a thrower. That's a good visit from

:02:00. > :02:13.Hedman as well. Looking to set up a decent finish.

:02:14. > :02:19.Credit to Corrine Hammond. It is so easy not to settle on that stage.

:02:20. > :02:26.You have never been here before. She has come all the way from Newcastle

:02:27. > :02:31.new South Wales, know that she is playing the great Deta Hedman in her

:02:32. > :02:34.first round match. She didn't settle, looked a bag of nerves in

:02:35. > :02:42.the first couple of legs. But look at this. Treble 19, yes, double 12.

:02:43. > :02:45.141. She keeps coming close doesn't she? Everyone was willing her to

:02:46. > :03:01.finish that one off. So no finish for Deta. Hammond will

:03:02. > :03:11.be back for double 12. Three darts at double 12 for a break of through.

:03:12. > :03:19.First leg second set. Just an inch below that. Oh, no. It's the

:03:20. > :03:26.finishing that's been the problem. 13%, two out of 15 for Hammond. And

:03:27. > :03:35.here's Hedman. Treble 18 leaves double 12. That's how you do it.

:03:36. > :03:43.That's a hold, but that will feel like a break of throw. Just that

:03:44. > :03:48.coincidence it was the double 12 that Deta hit. Having watched

:03:49. > :03:56.Corinne miss it four times in a row for that leg. It just must feel like

:03:57. > :03:58.a dart to the heart. And the percentage there is, that's why

:03:59. > :04:25.Hammond's behind. Because the scoring's picked up.

:04:26. > :04:27.Upwards of 70 for Hammond. Marginally higher for Deta Hedman,

:04:28. > :04:45.with darts like that. There we are. The fact that Hammond's average is

:04:46. > :04:49.in the 70s after those first two legs is extraordinary, and speaking

:04:50. > :04:57.of extraordinary, how about some of that! A maximum to get Lakeside

:04:58. > :05:11.rocking. It is the first wave of the 180 signs of this contest. This is

:05:12. > :05:24.for a 12-dart leg. Treble 20 for double 18. Didn't miss it by much.

:05:25. > :05:30.Well, if nothing else, she's nailed it, 180 at the Lakeside for the very

:05:31. > :05:35.first time. This might be another one.

:05:36. > :05:55.APPLAUSE. Double top. Double 10. To hold...

:05:56. > :06:04.No. Oh, dear. Oh, dear, the doubles have totally dried up. Two of 17 for

:06:05. > :06:19.Corrine Hammond. Deta can't now finish, but she can pressure the

:06:20. > :06:25.double 5. This is must-hit. Otherwise Hedman can set up a throw

:06:26. > :06:27.for the match the following leg. And that's exactly what she could try

:06:28. > :06:50.and do now. Yes. 11 or 19. 11 for double top.

:06:51. > :07:03.Oh, she missed 11! They called it the mad house. It is horrible but it

:07:04. > :07:15.has got to land. Miles off. Yes! Absolutely crucial.

:07:16. > :07:24.APPLAUSE. Phew. After 11 missed doubles in a row, Corrine Hammond

:07:25. > :07:27.lands a double 1. Much needed. If she had lost that leg, she would be

:07:28. > :07:48.one away from an early exit. She's going to have to find a break

:07:49. > :08:49.though, Corrine Hammond. Because they're Deta's darts. Yes.

:08:50. > :08:55.We get lots of players watching the darts when they're not playing. And

:08:56. > :09:00.would you believe it, that is another one. You might think,

:09:01. > :09:07.George, it is Jon Richardson the comedian, but ask me again in March.

:09:08. > :09:14.I can't remember his nickname but he was part of Let's Play Darts for

:09:15. > :09:20.Sport Relief. Any good? I'm genuinely not allowed to say, but

:09:21. > :09:24.what I can tell you is he joined me in the commentary box for one of the

:09:25. > :09:33.matches and he was a lot funnier than you are.

:09:34. > :09:49.LAUGHTER. 144 from Hammond won't be very funny for Hedman. Treble 16.

:09:50. > :09:55.Actually, Deta, who wants to take out 97 here, and now needs treble

:09:56. > :10:11.20, double 8 to do it, was Jon's partner. So he'll be hoping this

:10:12. > :10:23.finds the target. 16 double 16. She's got 8 tops, double 10. No. The

:10:24. > :10:31.Lancashire hotpot was his nickname. Tasty.

:10:32. > :10:45.They are both wobbling a bit here. No! Four missed doubles in a row

:10:46. > :11:01.from Deta Hedman. Double 5 for Hammond. Needs this. Oh, dear. She

:11:02. > :11:12.has got the release all wrong. Double 4 for a hold for Hedman. A

:11:13. > :11:20.slight adjustment across the Ocky, just inside two 4s, two 2s. Surely

:11:21. > :11:33.this time. No! Seven missed doubles in a row from Deta Hedman. Five now

:11:34. > :11:52.for Corinne. She needs this double 2. And doesn't get it. Mad house all

:11:53. > :12:03.round. Who wants this? Finally! You see? It's the moustache what won it.

:12:04. > :12:06.Well, I know that leg went on a bit, but how he managed to grow that

:12:07. > :12:15.while they were going for the doubles... What it means is, good

:12:16. > :12:22.line. Deta Hedman is a leg away from the quarterfinals. She's not been at

:12:23. > :12:27.her best, Deta. And Corrine Hammond, to be fair, has thrown some

:12:28. > :12:39.fantastic darts. Just really struggled with her finishing. 1 in

:12:40. > :12:42.17 of her last attempts at double. 11% checkout isn't going to win you

:12:43. > :13:25.anything, unfortunately. Must hold here. Corrine Hammond.

:13:26. > :13:39.There's Lynn. Her nan. As Corinne calls her.

:13:40. > :13:53.Steady tonne from Deta. She's not far away now. Needs a big score

:13:54. > :14:03.here, Corinne, and gets one! Another maximum from the Aussie.

:14:04. > :14:13.CHEERING. Very timely. What kind of response from Hedman? Well, she's on

:14:14. > :14:26.a finish, Deta. But 92 looks a lot nicer than 134. She has gone bull.

:14:27. > :14:37.10, double 16, to stay alive... So Hedman can win it here. Treble 20.

:14:38. > :14:54.Have another crack at it. Treble 18, this shot. No-go, so 16s to stay

:14:55. > :15:04.alive. Double 8. This has to land. And doesn't!

:15:05. > :15:18.Treble 20. 16 now. This is for the match, for Deta Hedman, tops.

:15:19. > :15:25.Emphatic! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Corrine

:15:26. > :15:31.Hammond will reflect on a waste paper basket full of missed doubles

:15:32. > :15:36.but she has those two maximums to take back to new south Wales. For

:15:37. > :15:41.Deta Hedman it is another Lakeside quarterfinal. Ladies and gentlemen

:15:42. > :15:45.as they leave the stage, wish them well, Australia's Corrine Hammond.

:15:46. > :15:46.And through to the quarterfinals, Deta Hedman!

:15:47. > :16:06.CHEERING. Winstanley next for Deta Hedman

:16:07. > :16:12.after Corrine Hammond travelled all the way from Australia and forgot to

:16:13. > :16:25.pack up her doubles. And that only means trouble.

:16:26. > :16:30.A case of what could have been there, I think Corrine Hammond at

:16:31. > :16:36.the start, you were really worried for, you thought she had shrunk

:16:37. > :16:44.under the Lakeside lights, but she was a couple of darts from the

:16:45. > :16:49.check-outs. She throws similar to how I throw, my right hand across me

:16:50. > :16:53.face. She done that. But the finishing let her down. She went out

:16:54. > :16:57.with them high scores first of all, that would have settled her, but

:16:58. > :17:03.three out of 31 attempts, something like that was it? Three out of 31,

:17:04. > :17:08.bang right. You ain't going to win if you do that. It's a shame, but

:17:09. > :17:14.Deta, I didn't think she played that well, but she took the hard shots

:17:15. > :17:18.and you play how you are playing against. But that young lady from

:17:19. > :17:27.Australia, I think we'll see a lot of her. If she can practise her

:17:28. > :17:36.doubles, her scoring is good, she didn't look nervous to me. We'll see

:17:37. > :17:43.her back here again. It used to be eight players, female at this stage.

:17:44. > :17:50.We saw the same names time and again, but now with more exposure,

:17:51. > :17:53.more money, but even the extra TV exposure, the extra games. I think

:17:54. > :17:57.it has lifted it. Players like Corrine Hammond need to come and

:17:58. > :18:02.play and learn and come back stronger. To see what it is like. It

:18:03. > :18:08.is alright if you are playing indoors or in a small hotel, but

:18:09. > :18:12.when you come here it is a different thing. If they had more Opens to go

:18:13. > :18:16.to we would produce more lady players. The standard is getting

:18:17. > :18:21.higher every year. Absolutely, it will take a lot more years for it to

:18:22. > :18:24.continue to rise, but it is such an untapped source. If I was a

:18:25. > :18:29.businessman now who wanted to wield money to make money, I would put it

:18:30. > :18:34.into the, that because it is about exposure, support and money. You are

:18:35. > :18:40.right. It is not about gender. You have to have the bees and honey to

:18:41. > :18:49.play darts. It costs money to play around the world. Even the BDO boys,

:18:50. > :18:54.they struggle. And if you are working a 40-hour minimum job...

:18:55. > :19:01.I've got a sore throat, I can't come to work, because you're playing

:19:02. > :19:11.darts somewhere. From memory Deta Hedman works in a Post Office. She

:19:12. > :19:18.works nights. She lovers it. She has stamped her place. 18 years of night

:19:19. > :19:22.shifts for the double World Championship runner-up. Deta, you

:19:23. > :19:26.are one step closer to maybe making it your title this year. But a funny

:19:27. > :19:30.old match really. Her nerves settled down but she couldn't hit the

:19:31. > :19:36.doubles for love nor money. I was glad about that actually. The way

:19:37. > :19:41.this thing was, Corinne got here because my partner, the BDO

:19:42. > :19:47.calculated her points wrong. When he looked into it and sorted it out,

:19:48. > :19:52.she qualified on her own merit. We said, all the work she had done,

:19:53. > :19:58.wouldn't it be funny if I got drown out and that is what happened. So it

:19:59. > :20:02.was only because of yours and Paul's recalculation she made it on the

:20:03. > :20:09.trip. You must be pleased she gave a good account of herself out there,

:20:10. > :20:14.albeit the doubles we should coming. I knew she was nervous, but I was

:20:15. > :20:21.hoping she played well. I played well, but I didn't want her to beat

:20:22. > :20:24.me obviously. She made a good account of herself, because being

:20:25. > :20:28.her first time, one of the things I always say, I always like a first

:20:29. > :20:32.time, because she will be so nervous. I won't say the words I

:20:33. > :20:40.would normally use! I remember my first time. I was so nervous, but

:20:41. > :20:44.yeah, she put up a good fight. Let's talk about you again. Always nice

:20:45. > :20:49.when you get those final darts in and you know you're through to

:20:50. > :20:55.another quarterfinal. Of course. She did let me in. When, I stood barks I

:20:56. > :21:03.didn't watch any darts she threw, just listened. When she missed that

:21:04. > :21:14.last one, I thought 767. I thought, 76. If you don't take this... My

:21:15. > :21:18.nerves. The first round really, really jangles your nerves. It takes

:21:19. > :21:23.so much to hold yourself together. I was working so hard to focus. Well

:21:24. > :21:27.you have done it now. If we look at the way the women's World

:21:28. > :21:32.Championship has unfolded so far. Anastacia has gone, Fallon Sherrock

:21:33. > :21:36.has gone. I know you will take it one step at a time, but you could be

:21:37. > :21:40.up against Lisa Ashton for another crack at this title. Do you believe

:21:41. > :21:43.and do you feel as though you are in the kind of form that maybe, just

:21:44. > :21:55.maybe, this year you could finally do it? As I said, when di that

:21:56. > :21:58.interview with Fallon playing Anne Louise, Fallon was practising

:21:59. > :22:05.superb. I was practising superb, but when it got up there you would think

:22:06. > :22:11.it didn't come through. But all us ladies still, there I won't say Lisa

:22:12. > :22:17.will get to the final or she won't, but we are all here for a reason. So

:22:18. > :22:23.I take each game as it comes. Spoken like a true pro. Whoever you face

:22:24. > :22:28.next, Lorraine or Rachel Brooks, well done today. Cheers. Well done

:22:29. > :22:32.Deta Hedman. We'll see her later in the week. Next a Lakeside stalwart.

:22:33. > :22:43.What a story it tells. Many years he's been there. We've got O'Shea

:22:44. > :22:52.and Fitton and Gary Anderson. He doesn't like meeting Darryl Fitton,

:22:53. > :22:56.let me tell you. You will see three quarterfinals as well for Gary

:22:57. > :23:02.Robson. A lot of people think he is that stalwart, he goes so far and no

:23:03. > :23:07.further. How he would like to change people's minds. He has a tough

:23:08. > :23:15.opponent this afternoon. The sportsman is back for more. I played

:23:16. > :23:21.handball before darts. I was Latin youth national player. I lost my

:23:22. > :23:35.motivation, but my darts are my life. I love this game. Let's hear

:23:36. > :23:42.it for the man from Latvia, Madars! This is the third time in my darts

:23:43. > :23:46.career at Lakeside. Lakeside was the best tournament for me. I travelled

:23:47. > :23:50.a lot of tournaments just for Lakeside. Foreign tournaments also.

:23:51. > :24:14.But Lakeside is the one for me. Last year, he is the captain from

:24:15. > :24:22.Wales, so he is a good friend. Really, I enjoy my game. My

:24:23. > :24:28.opponent, the first match here in Lakeside, he's a good player. It is

:24:29. > :24:36.Gary Robson! I played against him one time in the Czech Open last year

:24:37. > :24:44.or two years ago. Playing Gary on stage, I watched some videos at

:24:45. > :24:56.home, on YouTube, where he plays. I know why I can beat Gary. 180! A lot

:24:57. > :25:01.of friends in Latvia send me message, you can do it. You will be

:25:02. > :25:07.world champion, not this year, maybe next three or five years, but one

:25:08. > :25:16.day you will win the World Championship. That's my motivation

:25:17. > :25:20.for me. I think he is 27 at the moment. Gary Robson is an

:25:21. > :25:26.interesting character. Here we are again and no-one is tipping him to

:25:27. > :25:31.win it, and yet on his day he can beat the best of them. He plays the

:25:32. > :25:37.joker. Every year we think we've got to get a more business-like Gary

:25:38. > :25:42.Robson back. Back. You may notice facial markings on the face of Gary

:25:43. > :25:51.Robson. Don't try this at home. This was in the bar two nights ago. This

:25:52. > :25:57.is Gary on a hoverboard. Watch. A lot of players like to practise and

:25:58. > :26:04.prepare for the Lakeside by taking it quiet this their room, staying

:26:05. > :26:10.away, Scott Waites likes to practise sometimes. But Gary likes to have

:26:11. > :26:15.fun in the bar, and in that case break his nose I said, why did you

:26:16. > :26:20.do it? He said, I was going to put me hands out but no, I'm playing

:26:21. > :26:25.darts, so he put his headfirst. That's what he said to me. He broke

:26:26. > :26:31.his nose but didn't want to break his hand. That's true! That's proper

:26:32. > :26:39.Lakeside, that. He is a great darts player, goes around the world, but

:26:40. > :26:43.never seems to show how he can play. He beat all these people, everyone

:26:44. > :26:47.he meets, but he has to do it out there for a change. He always gets

:26:48. > :26:51.his game face on. It is just a little bit bruised this time around.

:26:52. > :26:56.Do we want to see it once more? I'm pretty much sure it is the strangest

:26:57. > :27:02.VT we are going to play the whole time that we are here. There he

:27:03. > :27:14.goes. He is shouting out, open the door! Oh, dear. Madars couldn't be

:27:15. > :27:18.more different. A quiet lad, goes about his business, a nice guy. Last

:27:19. > :27:24.year he played Martin Phillips. Played well. And he got a win under

:27:25. > :27:29.his belt the year before. I might not win it next year, or the next

:27:30. > :27:36.five years, but I'm going to win it. He'll be 32 when he wins its. Let's

:27:37. > :27:42.not hover about and go to the Main Stage for the instructions. Ladies

:27:43. > :27:47.and gentlemen, this is the 2016 Lakeside World Championships, and we

:27:48. > :27:50.are all enjoying day four here at the home of world darts, the

:27:51. > :27:57.Lakeside! CHEERING. We now introduce a

:27:58. > :28:00.three-time Lakeside World Championship quarterfinalist, a

:28:01. > :28:08.former world darts trophy champion, a former England Open and England

:28:09. > :28:08.Masters champion. It's Big Robbo, Gary Robson!

:28:09. > :29:11.CHEERING. We now introduce a former Finland

:29:12. > :29:20.Open and lit wane an Open champion. He's the reigning Scottish classic

:29:21. > :29:33.champion, it's time for some Latvian razzmatazz with Madars Razma!

:29:34. > :30:14.Great walk-ones indeed. Especially Madars Razma's track by that classic

:30:15. > :30:30.Latvian combo, the Proclaimers! Gary Robson with that broken nose

:30:31. > :30:37.which he sustained when he came off the hover board. His friends told

:30:38. > :30:41.us, we told him how to use it. Unfortunately, they didn't bother

:30:42. > :30:45.telling him how to stop it, hence head-butting the door and the broken

:30:46. > :30:51.nose, but he's taken it in very good part. 48 years old now, big Robbo

:30:52. > :30:58.from cram ling tonne in Northumberland and three times a

:30:59. > :31:03.Lakeside quarter-finalist. Madars Razma, razzamatazz, his third

:31:04. > :31:13.consecutive appearance. He beat Martin Phillips last year, but then

:31:14. > :31:20.it was -- he was eliminated. Thank you ladies and gentlemen. The best

:31:21. > :31:29.of five sets. Madars to throw first. Game on. He has a tough task here

:31:30. > :31:35.against Robbo. Always had a chance to win this title. Gave it away.

:31:36. > :31:45.Most recent ranking title victory for Robbo, 2014 England Masters beat

:31:46. > :31:55.Glenn Durrant in the final. There is a scalp. Number one seed. 15th BDO

:31:56. > :32:05.Championship appearance putting him level with George, O'Shea, Wilson,

:32:06. > :32:18.one behind Lowe. He's a stalwart. Some great names mentioned there.

:32:19. > :32:42.Razma, the first Latvian to qualify for the world champions. Ranked

:32:43. > :32:46.number 18. And an all round sportsman. You heard in the

:32:47. > :32:51.interview earlier on talking about how he had been a top class handball

:32:52. > :32:57.player as a youth. Playing for Latvia. Robbo a little slow to

:32:58. > :33:01.settle down, just shaking his head. Where is it, I've been throwing well

:33:02. > :33:08.in the practise room but now up on the stage trying to motivate himself

:33:09. > :33:20.once more and get used to the special atmosphere again. Not having

:33:21. > :33:26.any luck there. Not a tonne been scored in this first leg. 81 the

:33:27. > :33:32.highest, well, 99 with that last throw.

:33:33. > :33:42.Heavy scorer when he gets into his groove. That's better for Razma.

:33:43. > :33:46.Remember when Robson beat Bunting a few years back, he averaged very

:33:47. > :33:52.close 20100. He can hit big numbers. 137. Big check out. Robson will come

:33:53. > :33:57.back needing 132 to potentially take a leg against the throw.

:33:58. > :34:16.Variations in his finishing power. So treble 20, double 10.

:34:17. > :34:24.Well, no problem there. No big scores but gaining the double at

:34:25. > :34:28.first attempt and away he goes, taking the opening leg of the match.

:34:29. > :34:41.The first leg with the darts, Robbo to level it up. Takes this one. Last

:34:42. > :34:49.year he lost out to Jeff Smith 4-3 in round two. In the months that

:34:50. > :34:50.followed, Gary reached the semi-finals of the British Open and

:34:51. > :35:01.five ranking quarter-finals as well. Not had the best of luck in the

:35:02. > :35:05.World Championships. Might laugh about that escapade in the bar the

:35:06. > :35:10.other night with the hover board, but I'll tell you what, Gary really

:35:11. > :35:17.did take a whack, his nose was bleeding for two hours. I didn't

:35:18. > :35:23.know anything about that. I'm going to watch where I'm walking! I think

:35:24. > :35:27.the answer is don't get on one of those hover boards. Quite frankly, I

:35:28. > :35:53.don't really see you on one of those.

:35:54. > :36:03.112. Treble 20 he's after. Would have been a depubl 16. Not on this

:36:04. > :36:08.occasion. -- double 16. Nothing happening for Razma.

:36:09. > :36:18.Double 6 for Gary. See what he can do with this one to square up the

:36:19. > :36:22.match. Couple of sixes. Working along the oche. Perfect and back on

:36:23. > :36:36.level terms. We've got a Latvian cameraman

:36:37. > :36:45.working in our team as ever this year, his 32nd appearance at the

:36:46. > :36:51.World Championships and Ivers will be keen to see Madars put in a good

:36:52. > :36:57.performance. We all wish for that when these overseas players come and

:36:58. > :37:02.don't let themselves down. Razma's a good player. So is Robbo when he's

:37:03. > :37:20.on form. Very hard man to beat. Razma, a current Scottish classic

:37:21. > :37:26.champion, beat Ted Hankie in the final there.

:37:27. > :37:34.Ted is no longer with us. Eliminated from the competition last night,

:37:35. > :38:03.beaten by Martin Phillips. 180. Maximum first of the match for

:38:04. > :38:12.Robson. And up they go! Robbo taking the show.

:38:13. > :38:22.He'd raise the roof if he could take this one out. 136. A bit unlucky

:38:23. > :38:43.that one. Just the wrong side of the wire. You require 64.

:38:44. > :38:53.Back comes Robbo. You require 53. 53 required, there's the 13, tops now.

:38:54. > :39:03.Break of throw if he gets it on this dart. Chance goes begging.

:39:04. > :39:14.Double trouble. No problem there. Again going with throw, Razma 2-1

:39:15. > :39:40.ahead opening set first to three sets takes the match.

:39:41. > :39:51.This could be turning out to be a classic. Starting to up the anti

:39:52. > :39:58.slightly Robson. Needs to on his own throw. Unlucky. Very disappointed

:39:59. > :40:49.and a fraction away. 81 Robson looking at the bottom of

:40:50. > :40:52.the board. Treble 10 would have left double 15. Razma has the biggest

:40:53. > :41:03.possible checkout. 170 he wants. Robson comes back. Now needing 32,

:41:04. > :41:17.double 16. Good dart. Two apiece. Two doubles

:41:18. > :41:19.out of five for Robson. Not much between them in averages and dead

:41:20. > :41:29.level. Opening set. The advantage of throwing first. Not

:41:30. > :41:56.a very good start. Just one point in it. Chance for

:41:57. > :42:07.Robbo here. His fans trying to urge him on. Very clear shout of "come on

:42:08. > :42:30.Robbo". ". And the Northumberland man is ahead.

:42:31. > :42:41.Not got into a rhythm either of these players.

:42:42. > :42:55.That's more like it. Could have got those two on a pin head. Razma the

:42:56. > :42:59.favourite Mau for this opening set. Razma you require 94.

:43:00. > :43:15.Treble 20 would leave double 8. Can't be done now. Pressure throw.

:43:16. > :43:30.Looking for a decent shot for a finish. Tops to take the opening

:43:31. > :43:32.set. The number 13 seed Gary Robson loses the opening set. Razma winning

:43:33. > :43:47.it 3-2. So off to a good start. Here is

:43:48. > :44:13.Razma. Good marker. Caught the flight.

:44:14. > :44:19.Nothing happening for Robbo. Razma being watched here through the week

:44:20. > :44:26.by his girlfriend, there she is. Very pretty girl. She'll be pleased

:44:27. > :44:41.at the moment the way the match is going.

:44:42. > :45:02.Only the one maximum which went to Robson. Close match, not really

:45:03. > :45:12.ignited yet. No big scores. We should expect from the players the

:45:13. > :45:24.high scores. Good first dart, good second. The third goes astray.

:45:25. > :45:52.Chance to take it to the throw. Single 10 leaves double 16. Deep

:45:53. > :46:01.breaths. Move to the oche. That's the one! Break of throw as

:46:02. > :46:19.well. Good breakthrough for the Latvian at

:46:20. > :46:32.the beginning of this second set. A bit of trouble for Gary at this

:46:33. > :46:35.early stage. If he doesn't take this set, he'll need to find a way back

:46:36. > :46:39.quickly otherwise he'll be painting himself into a corner. He doesn't

:46:40. > :46:41.look as though he's up for it, he's shaking his head, pulling the darts,

:46:42. > :47:03.no fluency. Come on, Robbo, you can do it. Good

:47:04. > :47:05.marker. Don't want to wait all this year then come back and let yourself

:47:06. > :47:11.down. He'll be looking to move towards a

:47:12. > :47:26.finish with his next visit. Not lying well having to switch

:47:27. > :47:44.down. In 2015, he beat Phillips, the

:47:45. > :47:45.Welshman. Good scalp if he could beat Gary Robson here. 147 is

:47:46. > :48:02.doable. A change. He had a fall out from a

:48:03. > :48:13.similar position earlier on in the match from that 19. That's good.

:48:14. > :48:25.17 would leave tops. That's an errant opening dart. That's more

:48:26. > :48:26.like it. Tops then for 2-0. And that's the difference, five out of

:48:27. > :48:47.seven now and Robson's in trouble. Razma not messing about on the

:48:48. > :49:05.finishing power. 71%, brilliant finishing. 180.

:49:06. > :49:24.Brilliant throwing. Gary seems to have woken up, a little bit late.

:49:25. > :49:36.Shaking his head. Not happy with the way he's throwing, it's not quite

:49:37. > :49:41.happening for Robbo. It's not the Gary Robson I know.

:49:42. > :49:55.I've known him many years. If ever he needed a big hit, this would be

:49:56. > :50:07.the time. Another one, please. Two finishes.

:50:08. > :50:27.Treble 20. Razma 116 now for the second set.

:50:28. > :50:40.Still give him a finish to give him double 18.

:50:41. > :50:57.Double 14. Double seven. 74. You require 66. Again the chance

:50:58. > :51:01.now to go two sets up. Double 18. One dart at it. Brilliant on his

:51:02. > :51:26.doubles before then. The Robbo supporters, of whom there

:51:27. > :51:31.are a fair number, trying to urge him on, find the sort of big scores

:51:32. > :51:40.that he's going to need to get the all-important break back.

:51:41. > :51:51.I think he might have been better going for 19s there. Seem to have

:51:52. > :51:56.blocked... Nice style Razma. And a shake of the

:51:57. > :52:00.head from Robson. It's what is turning out to be one

:52:01. > :52:33.of those days. 41. Somebody said that fellow with

:52:34. > :52:37.the beard looked Lycra FA Benitez. Looks a bit like the man who

:52:38. > :52:48.swallowed the fly, didn't he? ! Brilliant. Got the crowd going.

:52:49. > :52:56.And this is for the second set. Robson is a long way back.

:52:57. > :53:02.Treble 10 would leave in double 18. Checking the score. So is he! Double

:53:03. > :53:09.18. No. Don't worry. It's coming back.

:53:10. > :53:36.Big task for Robbo. 337. He's not with us today. Not really.

:53:37. > :53:46.Double 18. Oh, dear. Magic. Robbo now, everything to do.

:53:47. > :53:56.Another seed in danger of being eliminated.

:53:57. > :54:06.Could be another whitewash, could be heading for 3-0 here once he gets

:54:07. > :54:14.his head on. Missing by a sizeable margin there. That first start,

:54:15. > :54:39.never central. Look at this. Come down now.

:54:40. > :55:10.Should come down. Get up there quick to catch it. Not for the first time,

:55:11. > :55:14.the dart looking a little loose in the big 19 area. Robbo checking the

:55:15. > :55:37.score. Madars you require 156. 121. Robson needing this to have a

:55:38. > :55:44.break of throw, great opening dart, treble 11 would be good. Now

:55:45. > :55:48.bullseye. 96. Has to go for it. You require 76.

:55:49. > :56:05.16. Now it's the tops. Double top. Yes! Madars razz man.

:56:06. > :56:20.Robbo throwing caution to the wind there with that first three darts.

:56:21. > :56:36.121. He needs a lot of those. Good first visit, see if they can

:56:37. > :56:41.build on it. That's a decent first dart. Now trying to move around and

:56:42. > :56:58.squeeze one around the side. Has to settle for the tonne. Lost all that

:56:59. > :57:07.consistency. Second for Razma. Razma certainly has a razzle dazzle. What

:57:08. > :57:11.a response. And for Robson. Well, no longer are they sat down, they are

:57:12. > :57:16.up again! That's what it's all about!

:57:17. > :57:29.Robbo coming back needing a tonne to square the set. 20 is the way.

:57:30. > :58:07.Coming down looking for treble 16. You can see where the emotions of

:58:08. > :58:13.the crowd lie. Very much in the Robson camp, most of them. But Razma

:58:14. > :58:18.looks pretty unflappable. A little bit of daylight though.

:58:19. > :58:29.Is that aneering? It is, yes. It's a fashion statement, Tony. Is it? !

:58:30. > :58:37.It's a heart of darts pin badge apparently. Oh, that's lovely. You

:58:38. > :58:41.can see the little dart in there. Wish him all the best. Never say

:58:42. > :58:51.never, Tony. He did well to get over the top

:58:52. > :59:09.there. It's a girl - wonder if she's

:59:10. > :59:14.expecting. Good dart. Coming down.

:59:15. > :59:24.Giving himself a chance to break the throw here. Coming to the forenow.

:59:25. > :59:32.Just woken up a bit. Let's hope it's not too late from his perspective. A

:59:33. > :59:40.bit unlucky. He could be on a good finish after these three darts.

:59:41. > :59:50.140, very nice indeed. Comes back on a 79 finish. Needs a treble here,

:59:51. > :59:57.Razma. Robson's got six darts. He was

:59:58. > :00:03.looking for treble 13, looking for 17s now. Bullseye if he wants it.

:00:04. > :00:09.Didn't do it. To 18. 12s. He's coming back.

:00:10. > :00:22.I think he was trying for the 18s there. Still, 49, you would rather

:00:23. > :00:34.be there than where Razma is. 17. Double 16. Double 8. A distraction.

:00:35. > :00:44.Well done! CHEERING. Something in the crowd

:00:45. > :00:49.distracted him momentarily. Didn't react, reset himself and got the all

:00:50. > :00:54.important double. And more importantly apart from taking the

:00:55. > :01:05.set it is a break of throw. One leg and it is a set point. It has taken

:01:06. > :01:11.him a while to get going. Let's see more of it. He's a strong lad. He's

:01:12. > :01:23.a tough lad. He needs to show himself as a fighter now. A Geordie.

:01:24. > :01:29.Trying to rev himself up. Maintain the momentum that he's been

:01:30. > :01:36.producing. That's a good dart. Can it be another? Yes it can! A

:01:37. > :01:43.maximum. He is starting to motor now. He's got the crowd going on his

:01:44. > :02:00.side now. Look at that! Everybody is standing. It's going be very

:02:01. > :02:05.entertaining, a good opportunity. He knows that that's a chance missed,

:02:06. > :02:11.because he really could have begun the close the door on Razma in the

:02:12. > :02:16.set. Razma is now given an opportunity to respond. Robbo's got

:02:17. > :02:30.to put that poor visit behind him and concentrate on the 196. Good

:02:31. > :02:38.dart. It is not very good. It leaves him a finish. 111. Razma on 179. All

:02:39. > :02:48.he can do is try and pressurise that 111.

:02:49. > :03:03.Went for the treble 20. Treble 17. Treble 14 coming in. Now, Razma,

:03:04. > :03:16.132, may use the bull's-eye here. Treble 19 is the dart. Would have

:03:17. > :03:23.left the bull. Tops now for Robson to win the set. Double 10. This is a

:03:24. > :03:26.big dart. He needs it, and he's got it!

:03:27. > :03:31.CHEERING. He takes the set. Razma is pegged back. It's 2-1 and Robson

:03:32. > :03:47.still believes. Exciting stuff. From Big Robbo. He's

:03:48. > :03:59.got the darts now in this fourth set. Can't keep a good man down. Not

:04:00. > :04:00.the start he would have we should. ITE

:04:01. > :04:10.the start he would have we should. -- not the start he would have

:04:11. > :04:19.wished. Razma has gone off the boil a bit hasn't he? Yes, he's lost the

:04:20. > :04:25.razzmatazz. I think he lost a flight there. A fair few darts players who

:04:26. > :04:37.want go down on their haunches like that. He's an athletic sort, is

:04:38. > :04:47.young Madars. So am I. I'll take your word for that, Tony. I love

:04:48. > :04:57.athletics. I'm, that was just a bit short. A good line-up though. Razma

:04:58. > :05:02.just getting his nose ahead. Not too significant as yet but Robson badly

:05:03. > :05:07.needs a treble and he only gets a 1. He's got himself back in the game

:05:08. > :05:19.and now he seems to be losing it again, Gary. Look at that. Razma not

:05:20. > :05:27.capitalising on the opening, and Robson given an opportunity to

:05:28. > :05:36.respond. Still playing it for the leg is Madars. Thirsty work here at

:05:37. > :05:41.Lakeside. It's very warm down there in the main auditorium. And there's

:05:42. > :05:50.Elena. I wonder what she is thinking. Hoping that Madars wins,

:05:51. > :06:06.I'm sure. Gary's got himself on a finish. Here we go. 119 is the

:06:07. > :06:13.finish. 57, so 62. Bull's-eye it is. Oh, not far away... Robbo, you need

:06:14. > :06:21.this one. Treble 20 double 18 would do. Oh, that's the wrong bed. Can't

:06:22. > :06:31.finish now. Razma to break the throw. 25. Double 4. Takes out the

:06:32. > :06:41.17 with his first shot. Double 4 now. To go ahead. And he takes it.

:06:42. > :06:46.Eight doubles out of 1 now and his finishing is good. What a lovely

:06:47. > :07:08.smile he got. OK, good checkout throws from Razma

:07:09. > :07:19.and not too bad from Robson. A tonne apiece. Just keep it going. Oh, just

:07:20. > :07:31.glanced off the barrel. It was in there for a maximum. Gary comes back

:07:32. > :07:40.in. He needs a maximum. A tonne 140. First six darts. Well, that's only

:07:41. > :07:44.21. It is unlucky but that now could be an opening for Robson. What a

:07:45. > :07:50.great time this would be for him to hit 140 and get on to a finish. But

:07:51. > :07:56.he can't ill that that treble. Sh. hit 140 and get on to a finish. But

:07:57. > :08:05.he can't ill that that treble. -- can't nail that treble. OK, first

:08:06. > :08:11.out of three, yes, there's one. 160 left still. Just looking at the

:08:12. > :08:20.board. What a great line of darts. Brilliant. It leaves 110. A

:08:21. > :08:24.three-dart finish on. So Razma comes back now needing 110 to go two legs

:08:25. > :08:31.ahead. And Robson's not yet on a finish, so he has got six from here,

:08:32. > :08:35.if he needs them, maybe doesn't. 13 leaves tops now, for 2-0, and he's

:08:36. > :08:40.taken it! His finishing has been terrific. That's nine out of 14. He

:08:41. > :08:50.can almost touch a place now in the next round. Just one more leg for

:08:51. > :08:57.victory. Tense, nervous headaches now for Robbo. Has it all to do

:08:58. > :09:02.right the way to the end, if he can. Jamie Hughes awaits in the next

:09:03. > :09:09.round, the man from the Black Country. It is looking as though it

:09:10. > :09:14.would be the Latvian making his way through into that second round.

:09:15. > :09:32.Robson with a huge battle on his hands here. A lot of them to come.

:09:33. > :09:36.Well, that's going to help. Locked the bed, goes for 19s and gets the

:09:37. > :09:46.trebles. On the Robson throw, has to win this leg or it's all over. Just

:09:47. > :09:52.imagine the pressure he's under up there, when you think about it. I

:09:53. > :09:56.always use that as a defence when people try to say, darts? Not a

:09:57. > :10:00.sport. Well, you go up there and try it. It's hard enough when you're in

:10:01. > :10:04.your local, never mind with all the people watching. Millions on

:10:05. > :10:09.television, and the pressure now in the context of the match of just

:10:10. > :10:22.trying to scrap it out. He's doing well, though. 128, a makeable

:10:23. > :10:31.finish, Tony. It is. Goes for the treble. So a treble, he's gone for

:10:32. > :10:39.the 18s. I wouldn't have gone that way. But there you are. To each

:10:40. > :10:48.their own. Treble 20 would have left the bull's-eye. Razma now. And

:10:49. > :10:58.Robson will get another go. Razma still not on a finish. Just as well,

:10:59. > :11:11.maybe. He's all over the place. I'm sorry to say. He knows it though.

:11:12. > :11:23.You can see the way... 18. Double top. Come on! Get off the barrel.

:11:24. > :11:32.Razma comes up with 86 to win the match. Trying to set himself, steady

:11:33. > :11:38.himself. 86 is needed. 18 leaves the bull's-eye. Oh, dear, that's a poor

:11:39. > :11:46.dart. He missed the big 18. So Robson will return. Looking for tops

:11:47. > :11:53.to keep the match alive. OK, Robbo, come on. Double top, yeah! It's not

:11:54. > :12:05.over yet. CHEERING. Look at that. That's his

:12:06. > :12:11.support here. There's a bit of nervousness in the throw of Razma.

:12:12. > :12:18.He twitched there with the finishing line beckoning. And Robson stepped

:12:19. > :12:30.in and capitalised. A different story if he gets to 2-2. Razma is

:12:31. > :12:39.still favourite to close this out. But you can sense the tension. They

:12:40. > :12:48.are certainly getting their money's worth today. That dart keeps him

:12:49. > :12:58.right in there, keeps him with a chance. That's a good marker. Will

:12:59. > :13:03.to make that one. He had to make it. He knew. Now, can Robson find the

:13:04. > :13:24.treble himself? No. Just 20 or so away from the score

:13:25. > :13:35.for Gary Robson. So Gary, step on the gas.

:13:36. > :13:47.186 now. Razma 208 now. What is he going to leave himself? Razma is

:13:48. > :13:52.still favourite, John. Not good. 150 is a big ask. Robson gets a big

:13:53. > :14:06.score here. Who is going to be favourite? Needs a treble. Oh, that

:14:07. > :14:12.could hurt. Treble 20. Treble 18. Double 18. What a shot to take the

:14:13. > :14:24.match, and what a match it's been. But is it still going to go on? It's

:14:25. > :14:28.all down to Razma. He is gone it! And what a way to win it. A 150

:14:29. > :14:48.checkout. Absolutely beautiful. What a way to end it, well done

:14:49. > :14:53.Madars Razma. That's all from us today. We're back with highlights

:14:54. > :15:22.tonight at the ripe old time of 12.05. Enjoy your evening.

:15:23. > :15:25.Meet the lizard that fakes its own death.

:15:26. > :15:28.Join Chris Packham for the World's Sneakiest Animals.

:15:29. > :16:04.What better way to explore our shore

:16:05. > :16:08.than striding along its salty margin?

:16:09. > :16:16.Thousands of miles of marked paths circle our shores.

:16:17. > :16:29.But I've never taken you on my favourite coastal walk. Until now.

:16:30. > :16:34.'I'm heading to our last great wilderness.

:16:35. > :16:38.'And the team are going that extra mile too.

:16:39. > :16:43.'Andy attempts a walk above the water.'

:16:44. > :16:49.that's haunted my imagination for years.

:16:50. > :16:53.What happens if I come off? Well, you've got big problems.

:16:54. > :16:57.Ruth is tracking down Victorian treasure hunters.

:16:58. > :17:03.Ladies who risked life and limb for ferns.

:17:04. > :17:05.I've got my gathering pole, I've got my ladder,

:17:06. > :17:11.all I've got to do now is reach that fern.

:17:12. > :17:15.Coast newcomer and physicist Helen Arney explores

:17:16. > :17:21.the secrets of a path built for pleasure, and terror.

:17:22. > :17:25.It really feels like something is about to happen.

:17:26. > :17:26.SHE SCREAMS I can see the sea!

:17:27. > :18:03.as we explore secret paths to hidden treasure.

:18:04. > :18:11.My secret path lies on the extreme edge, at Cape Wrath.

:18:12. > :18:17.Here, the mainland's tallest sea cliffs keep visitors at bay.

:18:18. > :18:21.In Cape Wrath's mysterious heart there are no roads,

:18:22. > :18:31.The only way to explore the isolated interior is on foot.

:18:32. > :18:39.But glorious treasures await those willing to walk on the wild side.

:18:40. > :18:43.I first took on Cape Wrath back in the '70s with my dad.

:18:44. > :18:47.I was 18 and I was cutting my teeth on extreme adventures,

:18:48. > :18:51.ready for isolation, ready for difficult challenges.

:18:52. > :18:56.But that unpopulated wilderness out there had a surprise, a beach.

:18:57. > :19:01.Not just any old beach, but the most beautiful beach I've ever seen.

:19:02. > :19:06.I can't wait to show you what it's like.

:19:07. > :19:13.but I'll begin on the other side of the cape.

:19:14. > :19:19.I'll hitch a ride on a road rarely travelled to the Lighthouse.

:19:20. > :19:23.Then I'll tread my own path to my favourite beach,

:19:24. > :19:29.a three-day adventure beginning on the tiny ferry.

:19:30. > :19:39.disconnected to the rest of Britain and the mainland, but it's so

:19:40. > :19:42.remote that this is the easiest way of getting there, taking your ferry.

:19:43. > :19:47.A lot of tourists think it's an island, you know.

:19:48. > :19:50.What do you think it would have been like living out there?

:19:51. > :19:55.You'd need plenty of Scotch whisky about you I'd think at night,

:19:56. > :20:07.The isolation of Cape Wrath doesn't only attract tourists.

:20:08. > :20:12.Some ten years back I witnessed how the MOD seal off the cape

:20:13. > :20:20.to create a live firing range for 1,000lb bombs.

:20:21. > :20:24.Now I want to discover why this wild coast

:20:25. > :20:31.Once a handful of shepherds and their families

:20:32. > :20:34.had crofts scattered across the cape.

:20:35. > :20:39.To see what became of these coastal folk I'm with John Mackenzie,

:20:40. > :20:47.So this must be the edge of the range now.

:20:48. > :20:50.It's the start of the range here, aye.

:20:51. > :20:52.The barrier's up, so no shells flying around, no bombs dropping.

:20:53. > :20:56.Is that an old building, remains of a building?

:20:57. > :20:58.That's the remains of the old school. Oh, is it?

:20:59. > :21:01.Can we go and have a look? It's not very big.

:21:02. > :21:11.I've never seen such a small school. It's like a garden shed. I know.

:21:12. > :21:13.So that's the school, with four pupils in.

:21:14. > :21:22.Wow. You can see where the front door was.

:21:23. > :21:27.Four children, plenty bigger. NICK LAUGHS

:21:28. > :21:30.No hiding at the back of class. No, no.

:21:31. > :21:37.'These stones were the foundation of the community - the school.

:21:38. > :21:45.When the school closed down, what did that mean for your family?

:21:46. > :21:49.Well, we had to move to the mainland so I could go to school over there,

:21:50. > :21:54.and probably that's the start of the end of people living here.

:21:55. > :21:58.So the closure of the school was the end for a community living out here.

:21:59. > :22:06.Shortage of pupils meant the crofters' time was up.

:22:07. > :22:10.But you can still walk in their footsteps.

:22:11. > :22:15.John's father maintained their only road.

:22:16. > :22:22.from the middle '20s to the middle '40s.

:22:23. > :22:29.What's it feel like to be walking on your father's road?

:22:30. > :22:37.I'm heading on into the heart of the cape

:22:38. > :22:43.saving my legs for later, I'm hitching a lift

:22:44. > :22:49.This might feel like the road to nowhere,

:22:50. > :22:54.but in fact it goes all the way out over the moorlands to the

:22:55. > :23:00.lighthouse here at Cape Wrath, my last contact with civilisation.

:23:01. > :23:05.After that it's an eight-mile coast walk south through the wilderness,

:23:06. > :23:09.a wilderness unlike any other in Britain.

:23:10. > :23:11.But at the end of it there's a treasure,

:23:12. > :23:16.a glittering diamond in the rough, Sandwood Bay. It's got a freshwater

:23:17. > :23:26.loch and a beautiful river spilling out across the sands into the sea.

:23:27. > :23:33.'I'm on my own, and it's a lonely location,

:23:34. > :23:43.You're not likely to bump into too many people out here, but over

:23:44. > :23:48.there at the lighthouse live the last two residents of Cape Wrath.

:23:49. > :23:53.But who would chose to live in a place like this?

:23:54. > :23:57.I'll discover what it's like to live here later.

:23:58. > :24:01.But the splendid isolation of Scotland's Cape Wrath

:24:02. > :24:11.For easier going, seek out England's South West Coast Path.

:24:12. > :24:20.and 630 miles of track unfold before you.

:24:21. > :24:24.The tourist trail threading around our southernmost sea

:24:25. > :24:50.Today many walkers make a beeline for the golden sands.

:24:51. > :24:56.In the Victorian age, the craze wasn't for beaches

:24:57. > :25:01.A particular type of plant fascinated collectors

:25:02. > :25:14.Ruth is in town to take a leaf out of the Victorians' book.

:25:15. > :25:18.In the 19th century Devon was gripped by a strange epidemic,

:25:19. > :25:24.Pterodomania had taken hold of the town.

:25:25. > :25:32.People were roaming the coastal paths wide-eyed with green fingers.

:25:33. > :25:37.Devon was in the throes of fern fever.

:25:38. > :25:43.We take these garden favourites for granted.

:25:44. > :25:46.But surprisingly, 150 years ago fern mania

:25:47. > :25:55.blossomed into an obsession for gentile Victorian ladies.

:25:56. > :25:59.Fanatics grew ferns in glass cabinets,

:26:00. > :26:03.and nurseries dedicated to the plants sprang up.

:26:04. > :26:11.But the real action was in the wild warm climate of these Devon cliffs.

:26:12. > :26:17.A generation of young women was drawn to this land of the ferns.

:26:18. > :26:21.Sowing the seeds of this growing craze was a resident of nearby

:26:22. > :26:27.It's not the greatest of pictures, but she was never one

:26:28. > :26:31.for sitting still to have her portrait taken, and it was her book,

:26:32. > :26:37.Ferny Combes, that really inspired a legion of followers to abandon

:26:38. > :26:44.the regular tourist track, and go on the path of fern enlightenment.

:26:45. > :26:49.'Published in 1856, this slim volume spurred ladies on to leave

:26:50. > :26:55.'their drawing rooms and walk this coast, fern collecting.

:26:56. > :27:00.Why were Victorians so fond of fronds?

:27:01. > :27:03.'Author Sarah Whittingham is sharing her wisdom.'

:27:04. > :27:07.The Victorian age was the heyday of the amateur naturalist.

:27:08. > :27:11.Fern-gathering parties were usually of mixed sexes,

:27:12. > :27:14.and as Punch said, "The rarest species usually

:27:15. > :27:19."grow in the least frequented spots," so you and your companion can

:27:20. > :27:23.disappear off into the hedgerow or round the corner...

:27:24. > :27:26.Far away from the chaperone. Exactly. Exactly.

:27:27. > :27:30.I love this picture because she's got caught in the brambles

:27:31. > :27:34.and she's looking up really peeved at these two, and she's saying

:27:35. > :27:38."Please can you identify this fern for me," and she's like I can't...

:27:39. > :27:40.Well, they're too busy flirting to take any notice of her.

:27:41. > :27:44.Ferns and flirting again, yes, definitely.

:27:45. > :27:49.This passionate pursuit was also caught up with sexual politics.

:27:50. > :27:53.Botany in particular was very fashionable among women.

:27:54. > :27:56.where you were allowed to be clever, wasn't it?

:27:57. > :27:59.Exactly. Many women were writers of books on ferns,

:28:00. > :28:03.and they were many of the early collectors.

:28:04. > :28:07.'The freedom to study ferns help foster early feminism

:28:08. > :28:22.'Time to hitch up our petticoats and start fern foraging.

:28:23. > :28:28.'we are well-equipped to collect our quarry.'

:28:29. > :28:33.a nice narrow long fern trowel to really get in there

:28:34. > :28:38.among the rocks and dig up a fern specimen, and if it's nice and small

:28:39. > :28:42.you can put it in your vasculum, which is a tin collecting case.

:28:43. > :28:45.If you're a rather unprincipled botanist you might be digging up

:28:46. > :28:49.vast quantities of fern. There was one writer who actually

:28:50. > :28:51.had to employ a man with a cart to take them home.

:28:52. > :28:55.That's dedication...and despoliation of the countryside.

:28:56. > :29:05.the passion didn't stop on the coastal path.

:29:06. > :29:08.The fern lover could literally fill their home with ferns. Not just real

:29:09. > :29:13.ones, but they could have images of ferns from carpets to chamber pots.

:29:14. > :29:18.Teapot too, covered in ferns. Teapot's lovely.
