:00:28. > :00:33.Good evening. Coming up over the next three days, Great Britain's
:00:34. > :00:37.Davis Cup tie against the United States it is Britain's first
:00:38. > :00:42.appearance in the world group since 2008. Now, they are familiar in this
:00:43. > :00:48.competition that dates back more than 100 years. During that time it
:00:49. > :00:52.has produced patriot patriotic scenes and sporting drama around the
:00:53. > :00:56.world. Ties between Great Britain and the United States are special
:00:57. > :01:02.and always have been. Lord's, ladies and gentlemen, the
:01:03. > :01:06.British Davis Cup team... There was something about it - it made you
:01:07. > :01:12.proud. Probably mattered more to the British than the Americans. Now you
:01:13. > :01:19.see the rally... That's it - they have done it! Great Britain through
:01:20. > :01:28.to the Davis Cup final. McEnroe's victory put the cup beyond Britain's
:01:29. > :01:32.reach. That's it. A truly amazing scene!
:01:33. > :01:37.We find ourselves in the world group again after a five-year gap. It is
:01:38. > :01:42.one of the things that makes it different throw are some tactics in
:01:43. > :01:50.it. Everyone is desperate to play it is unique in so many ways. With me,
:01:51. > :01:56.two people who know all about Davis Cup tennis. We saw a clip of you -
:01:57. > :02:01.that was in 1978. That was on USA soil. What is it like playing
:02:02. > :02:06.America there? It is tough. We had a big crowd. It was in Palm Springs. I
:02:07. > :02:10.had to play John McEnroe, which was not nice for me. There is always a
:02:11. > :02:16.good atmosphere. Hopefully if the crowd is big - there is something
:02:17. > :02:24.special about GB against the USA. That was a nice shot of your dad. He
:02:25. > :02:29.was a daifts cup captain. What an amazing picture. It is an in
:02:30. > :02:34.incredible tie, one I look forward to. I know you would love to be out
:02:35. > :02:39.there. You have been given the all-clear from cancer, which is
:02:40. > :02:44.great. Hopefully you'll be back in the soon. What is the team like -
:02:45. > :02:50.have they looked forward to this? Absolutely. Everybody in the team
:02:51. > :02:55.thrives on the Davis Cup. They look forward to the atmosphere limit be a
:02:56. > :03:03.great atmosphere out there in San Diego. It is tough against the USA.
:03:04. > :03:07.It will be an I mazing atmosphere. Ward -- an amazing atmosphere. James
:03:08. > :03:12.Ward has been playing well. Now it is more wide open. Yes James Ward v
:03:13. > :03:18.Andy Murray, carrying the hopes for the nation in the singles. Back in
:03:19. > :03:23.the world oup - the first time since 2008. It is great to be there, isn't
:03:24. > :03:28.it? It is very special. When you have a player like Andy Murray in
:03:29. > :03:33.your team, he can win two singles in all of the matches. You look at the
:03:34. > :03:37.Groups there. There are many tough teams out there. It is good to see
:03:38. > :03:44.Australia back as well. The Czech Republic, they are back. There's an
:03:45. > :03:48.interesting one at the bottom. That will be interesting to follow.
:03:49. > :03:53.Of course we will keep an eye on Great Britain against the United
:03:54. > :03:57.States. The winner will face Argentina or Italy in April. We will
:03:58. > :04:01.keep you up-to-date as it goes along. Let's talk about Andy coming
:04:02. > :04:05.into this. He is playing up against Donald Young, which, as you said,
:04:06. > :04:10.has come in because of John Isner. Andy, it is great to have him and he
:04:11. > :04:15.always said to Leon, I will come and play and he did against Croatia and
:04:16. > :04:19.this is where he wants to be. Absolutely. He said his focus the
:04:20. > :04:23.last couple of years were Grand Slams. Now he has that title he is
:04:24. > :04:31.able to concentrate on the Davis Cup. He played well in Australia.
:04:32. > :04:36.Probably 80% of his best level. He is fit fighting fit. He is healthy.
:04:37. > :04:41.-- he is fighting fit. He is healthy.
:04:42. > :04:48.Play getting underway in just a moment. We were at the arena last
:04:49. > :04:57.weekend. Rod is back. He lives in California. He is making his way on
:04:58. > :05:01.to court for the coin toss. He will enjoy Great Britain against the
:05:02. > :05:08.United States. He is shaking hands with Jim Courier, shaking hands.
:05:09. > :05:15.There's the captain. I know, you live in California as well - he is
:05:16. > :05:19.quite a presence out there? The most modest champion of all time. You
:05:20. > :05:24.would not think he has won through the Grand Slam twice. He comes out,
:05:25. > :05:29.hits a few balls. He talks well about the present-day champions. No
:05:30. > :05:35.jealousy or anything. He is a wonderful man. He hit with Roger
:05:36. > :05:41.Federer in Melbourne. That was amazing! Roger Federer knows all
:05:42. > :05:46.about legends and the history of the game and how important it is. It is
:05:47. > :05:52.lovely they are honoured at all the Grand Slams. Wimbledon does its
:05:53. > :05:58.thing as well. Everyone appreciated what anyone did in any generation.
:05:59. > :06:14.Rod, he is many people's best of all times. That is the opening match. As
:06:15. > :06:18.Rod does the coin toss... So that was a few minutes ago. The players
:06:19. > :06:20.are on court. We have three days to look forward to. And of course this
:06:21. > :06:46.singles match is first on court. It is doubles tomorrow. The Britain
:06:47. > :06:50.brothers we expect it to be Sam Querrey, Colin Fleming.
:06:51. > :06:53.It looks good. It will be a fantastic match on Sunday evening.
:06:54. > :07:01.Really exciting. Looking at Andy, he is looking very good. He is looking
:07:02. > :07:08.good against left-handers. He is feeling good. He'll be trying
:07:09. > :07:12.to get one ahead. We will talk between matches about
:07:13. > :07:17.why Leon went for him and instead of Kyle Edmund. As far as this match is
:07:18. > :07:23.concerned, well Jim Courier has had a difficult week. Boy, John Isner -
:07:24. > :07:27.he said he knew a week ago, he pulled out of his first round in
:07:28. > :07:32.Australia. To lose Isner and to bring in Donald Young - ranked 79th.
:07:33. > :07:36.When you look at what has happened to American tennis! That sums it up.
:07:37. > :07:40.No disrespect to Donald Young, at 79, to be in the Davis Cup match for
:07:41. > :07:46.the United States. When would you ever expect that to happen? Jim
:07:47. > :07:51.Courier had no choice. The good thing is, if he will be nervous and
:07:52. > :07:55.I am sure he will be, it is better he goes up against Andy in the first
:07:56. > :07:59.match. He can open his shoulders up. No-one is expecting him to win. It
:08:00. > :08:04.is a tough ask for Donald Young. This is way above his sort of pay
:08:05. > :08:09.grade, so to speak, going into a Davis Cup in a world group. Weapon
:08:10. > :08:13.will see how he adapts. We are playing at the baseball ground
:08:14. > :08:17.there. They have made this court - it has been a big talking point
:08:18. > :08:22.because it is a temporary play court. It looks like a red European
:08:23. > :08:27.Court. It is fast, it is slippery and they think it is dangerous. They
:08:28. > :08:31.are trying to change it. That could play into Britain's hands as well. I
:08:32. > :08:37.was surprised when they put it on clay. I thought they would have a
:08:38. > :08:42.faster court. Of to put it on a clay court. Isner had success in the
:08:43. > :08:47.past. He won in France last year. John Isner is not here. It come
:08:48. > :08:51.comes down in favour for the British team. I have heard it is fast,
:08:52. > :08:58.slippery and tough to move out of corners. I have heard the bounce is
:08:59. > :09:06.true. When it is a dodgy clay court, the bounce is wonky. It is important
:09:07. > :09:12.so Andy does not get frustrated and can play his normal name. He got the
:09:13. > :09:16.trouble with his back and pulled out of the clay court season earlier.
:09:17. > :09:19.That was the problems earlier this year he will be weary about his
:09:20. > :09:25.movement. He does not want anything to go wrong. The calm is the home
:09:26. > :09:31.team can do whatever they want. Having said this, if this surface is
:09:32. > :09:35.unpredictable and dangerous - they were saying they should have rules
:09:36. > :09:37.where the court has to be laid in a certain amount of time so the
:09:38. > :09:43.officials can check it out. You should not be allowed to put a court
:09:44. > :09:48.in which is dangerous for the players. Hopefully that will not
:09:49. > :09:55.happen today. Let's talk about Donald Young. He has a win over Andy
:09:56. > :09:59.at India wells back in 2011. He plays well. He is fast and plays
:10:00. > :10:03.well. A very good forehand. He doesn't always seem like he's
:10:04. > :10:07.mentally there. He often seems frustrated with the set-up.
:10:08. > :10:13.Sometimes it can get the better of him on court. If Andy can play to
:10:14. > :10:18.his level and keep his mind solid he'll have too much for Donald
:10:19. > :10:21.Young. Donald Young took a set offer Ferrer in Auckland.
:10:22. > :10:26.Andy is the far stronger player. As we see here he has huge experience,
:10:27. > :10:30.Andy and far the greater player of Donald Young. These historic
:10:31. > :10:35.meetings, there have been so many between these two nations. They date
:10:36. > :10:38.back - that was the first match back in 1900 between America and Great
:10:39. > :10:43.Britain. More and more countries have been added. 122 taking part in
:10:44. > :10:46.the Davis Cup this year. I am worried to see Andy leaving the
:10:47. > :10:51.court straight away. Maybe a little nervous or something.
:10:52. > :10:57.Who knows what it is! This is making Donald think more about - this is a
:10:58. > :11:04.big match for him. It is tough for Jim Courier to have a debutante on
:11:05. > :11:08.the chair. He has his towel over his head. It is like, captain, I am
:11:09. > :11:12.ignoring you. It is interesting opening scenes. Courier a relaxed
:11:13. > :11:16.personality. He has been in Australia. He has worked for TV. He
:11:17. > :11:20.would have spent time with Donald Young. Having him as a back-up I
:11:21. > :11:26.expected Courier and Young to be together, talking a lot, emotional,
:11:27. > :11:30.going about fr on about where to serve -- going on about where to
:11:31. > :11:34.serve. Every player is different. John will talk about it more in
:11:35. > :11:39.commentary because he has headed up to the commentary box now. Andy
:11:40. > :11:44.didn't want to talk. We will see that and the difference between the
:11:45. > :11:49.two singles matches that Leon Smith will be really talking to, bending
:11:50. > :11:55.down, getting in James Ward's ear, whereas Andy knows it all. He'll let
:11:56. > :12:00.him do his thing and let him be there if he needs him. Leon will not
:12:01. > :12:05.be worried that Andy is walking behind the court - I am sure it was
:12:06. > :12:11.a brief toilet break. Leon doesn't have to say much. This is what Jim
:12:12. > :12:16.Courier is paid for. He has a tough job as American captain - it is for
:12:17. > :12:19.moments like this. Difficult situations to mentor Donald Young in
:12:20. > :12:24.his opening match. It will be a tough ask for Donald Young. Andy
:12:25. > :12:29.will get some fist pumps to get GB off to a good start. Ross, you are
:12:30. > :12:38.heading up to the commentary box as well. You can keep in -- get in
:12:39. > :12:45.touch via the website: You can Tweet us or on Facebook. We
:12:46. > :12:47.are getting underway here. Ross will join John Lloyd and John
:12:48. > :13:41.Overend for this one. It is morning out in California. A
:13:42. > :13:45.grey and overcast day. Some lovely weather in the build-up to this tie.
:13:46. > :14:07.Some rain in the morning forecast. Hopefully that will stay away.
:14:08. > :14:15.Looking like he's going for extra warmth there with two layers. He
:14:16. > :14:19.didn't play the last time Britain were at this elite level, pulling
:14:20. > :14:36.out a couple of days before the match in Argentina, five years ago.
:14:37. > :14:44.Not an episode recorded with any great satisfaction by anyone
:14:45. > :14:47.involved. Five years on, here he is - the USA against Great Britain. The
:14:48. > :16:11.first round of the world group. The longest rally we've had.
:16:12. > :16:14.Watching this, obviously the first game only, maybe because of the
:16:15. > :16:17.atmosphere being that heavy, it doesn't look that fast at the
:16:18. > :16:20.moment. They have talked about how it is a fast leg, but so far doesn't
:16:21. > :18:23.look very quick. Murray closes up the open ping day
:18:24. > :18:28.on the clay in San Diego. There's Jim Courier. The former world number
:18:29. > :18:32.one. A four-time Grand Slam champion. Jacket and tie. What is
:18:33. > :18:36.that? I would like to see him wear that if he goes to Argentina in the
:18:37. > :18:46.summer! I would like to see if he keeps his jacket on. A hot talking
:18:47. > :18:52.point - the attire. Not sure many agree with it.
:18:53. > :18:56.Fascinating to see Donald Young under his towel.
:18:57. > :19:00.You expect the final few words of the captain. That was a proper, no,
:19:01. > :19:05.I don't want to hear from you. Go away!
:19:06. > :19:06.They have been getting on well during the practise sessions, from
:19:07. > :20:42.what I hear. A lot of communication. Good play there from Murray. Good
:20:43. > :20:48.depth on the forehand and Young is not going to get away with too many
:20:49. > :20:54.of his balls. That length is not going to get the
:20:55. > :21:08.job done. A long way back behind the baseline.
:21:09. > :21:15.That is reminiscent of the very first shot Andy Murray played in the
:21:16. > :21:21.Davis Cup, out in Israel, 2005. Debut, first ball, reserving serve,
:21:22. > :21:56.thumped it, like that one. It was a doubles match.
:21:57. > :22:00.It is about biding your time, waiting for the opportunity to make
:22:01. > :22:05.the American miss and move. And this is what inevitably happens.
:22:06. > :22:13.A very interesting character, Donald Young. Billed as, well, the next big
:22:14. > :22:21.thing - practically for the past decade. Given wildcards at 15, 16,
:22:22. > :22:26.17, 18. This is his Davis Cup debut. He's 79
:22:27. > :22:32.in the world at the moment. He has been as high as 38. I think it would
:22:33. > :22:37.be fair to say they are still waiting Stateside for him to fulfil
:22:38. > :22:40.all that early potential when he won the Australian Open juniors at just
:22:41. > :22:52.15. Donald Young probably owes a few
:22:53. > :23:00.dinners to John McEnroe over the years. John McEnroe was the first
:23:01. > :23:04.one who raved how good he would be. He picked it up and gave him a huge
:23:05. > :23:14.contract, which ran for a number of years.
:23:15. > :23:23.It is always nice to have him on his side. If you remember, in 2 11,
:23:24. > :23:30.sorry 2012, Donald Young was on a 23-match losing streak, or late 20s.
:23:31. > :23:50.It was a tough time for Young. He's done better in recent times.
:23:51. > :23:57.Excellent start from the Wimbledon champion. That year he won, he only
:23:58. > :24:02.won five matches in the season. 24 defeats.
:24:03. > :24:10.At times you feel he and his family have a very high Estaiation of his
:24:11. > :24:17.own ability -- estimation of his ability. He talked about them on
:24:18. > :24:23.Twitter because they would not give him a wildcard into Wimbledon. They
:24:24. > :24:26.had to apologise. He said he believed the sentiment behind the
:24:27. > :24:30.Tweet in the first place. In that respect it is surprising to see him
:24:31. > :24:35.get the call up here and represent the US in this tie. I know a lot of
:24:36. > :24:42.people felted that was basically -- felt that was basically
:24:43. > :24:49.career-suicide. The amount of wildcards, and for him to complain
:24:50. > :24:54.was mindboggling. I am sure the U S TA were not happy about that. There
:24:55. > :24:58.was no-one else to pick, really. I watched a couple of American players
:24:59. > :25:03.- a young player, who is looking good. I thought he could be
:25:04. > :25:07.involved, Ryan Harrison - very surprising he has not got the call
:25:08. > :25:46.up. Jim Courier clearly fancies him and likes the way he plays.
:25:47. > :25:59.Although this is the fourth game - the best of five-set matches. It is
:26:00. > :26:02.not going the American's way. A rookie and Andy Murray very
:26:03. > :26:04.professional the way he started this match to. A nervous opponent, he's
:26:05. > :26:24.not giving anything. You know what Jim Courier is
:26:25. > :26:28.thinking - you should have listened to me before the match.
:26:29. > :27:09.It is not a good start for the debutante, Donald Young.
:27:10. > :27:17.Seen the one down-the-line. That was crosscourt and pressure on Donald
:27:18. > :27:19.Young's serve. Doesn't have a particularly big serve. That will
:27:20. > :27:35.get eaten alive by Murray. Murray doing an excellent job here.
:27:36. > :27:54.Best of five sets in Davis Cup. The captain is looking over his
:27:55. > :28:11.shoulder already. That is not a good sign. The feet
:28:12. > :28:24.were not moving there at all. He is tired.
:28:25. > :28:29.And so is he too. There comes a point when you are
:28:30. > :28:31.four-love down, the first match ever for your country, you start wanting
:28:32. > :29:04.to win a game in this first set Really impressive from Murray.
:29:05. > :29:11.Young, not a the races. Britain against the USA on clay, in
:29:12. > :29:18.California. Such a proud tradition these two meeting, not just in
:29:19. > :29:39.tennis. The first ever Davis Cup tie in 1900. John Lloyd you were a coach
:29:40. > :29:46.when Britain last played in the final. It is unclear if you were
:29:47. > :29:51.involved in 1995, but you have lots of experience in battles between
:29:52. > :29:56.these nations? Well, I will tell you one thing, Jim Courier, it is not
:29:57. > :30:00.only that he is losing, that is expected but it is the way that he
:30:01. > :30:04.is going about it at the moment. The problem here, that is what Jim
:30:05. > :30:08.Courier is thinking now, he is not expecting him to beat Andy Murray
:30:09. > :30:13.but if his confidence take as battering, he may have to play the
:30:14. > :30:17.fifth rubber. The best case scenario is to play a good match to get rid
:30:18. > :30:22.of the nerves, but at the moment, it is turning out to be a disaster for
:30:23. > :30:36.him. He must get back on board here somewhere.
:30:37. > :30:53.I suppose, John, if Andy Murray is in form, which he looks to be, and
:30:54. > :30:59.fully fit, which he looks be, which he really is, he could be playing
:31:00. > :31:04.for the doubles tomorrow. As with things standing with the
:31:05. > :31:09.team nominations it could be James Ward against Donald Young would that
:31:10. > :31:15.not be something if Britain can win in their back yard on clay? The last
:31:16. > :31:22.time that Britain beat the USA in the Davis Cup was 1935. That S at
:31:23. > :31:32.Wimbledon. And the last win on clay was 81 years ago. 1933.
:31:33. > :31:36.I do think that this is a 50/50 tie. With Isner in the team I think that
:31:37. > :31:52.the Americans would have been the favourite.
:31:53. > :31:59.And everyone in San Diego in the past week, realised that Isner would
:32:00. > :32:05.pull out. So Donald Young has had time to prepare. He has had ready to
:32:06. > :32:06.play. Some time on the courts. No real excuses other than nerves to
:32:07. > :32:25.play a poor opening first set. The problem is if you are tight,
:32:26. > :32:31.Andy Murray is about the worst person to play. He makes you play so
:32:32. > :32:51.many balls. It is difficult to get the ball past him!
:32:52. > :32:58.Well its his first game on the board for Donald Young.
:32:59. > :33:04.That is what Donald Young has to do. He must go back to when he is
:33:05. > :33:08.struggling. He must use the serve and the forehand. He will be
:33:09. > :33:12.relieved he has the opening game of his Davis Cup career, but it is not
:33:13. > :33:19.looking good so far. Was that Mike or Bob? That was Mike.
:33:20. > :33:21.Wow! That is good. I could not tell! A slightly thinner face.
:33:22. > :33:44.I will have to look for that. This is very difficult to move
:33:45. > :33:47.behind on a slippery clay-court. It takes the time away from the
:33:48. > :33:52.opponent. Andy Murray is controlling the centre of the court so well. He
:33:53. > :34:48.is making his opponent struggle with the movement.
:34:49. > :34:56.Oh, dear, even with a decent net approach, Donald Young can't make
:34:57. > :35:10.the volley. It is three set points for Andy Murray in just 22 minutes.
:35:11. > :35:35.There it is! A perfect start for Britain.
:35:36. > :35:40.Memories with this Britain/USA match of that incredible tie, John, that
:35:41. > :35:46.you were very much at the heart in 1999. I'm sure some of you may have
:35:47. > :35:52.been there in the arena. Probably one of the greatest Davis Cup ties,
:35:53. > :35:55.certainly in recent years. The atmosphere incredible. It came down
:35:56. > :36:10.to the final set and the final match. That's right. With Jim
:36:11. > :36:14.Courier and rudz rudz rudz. -- and Greg Rudseksi, but Jim Courier was
:36:15. > :36:19.amazing when it came down to it. A fabulous tie.
:36:20. > :36:27.It was 8-6 in the final set for Jim Courier. Todd Martin and big Greg on
:36:28. > :36:33.straight sets on the opening day. Being on a temporary gantry with the
:36:34. > :36:38.commentary boxes.therapy rattling from the vibe rations of the crowd
:36:39. > :36:44.noise that very day. This is very different. This stadium is set up in
:36:45. > :36:47.left field of the Petco Park. It certainly looks good. You may have
:36:48. > :36:53.thought they would have sold a few more tickets but maybe it will fill
:36:54. > :36:58.up as the day goes on. I think it was a bit of a troubled
:36:59. > :37:07.match this for the promoters. I think that the USTA were seeing who
:37:08. > :37:12.would take it but it comes up against the Super Bowl on Sunday.
:37:13. > :37:16.You don't want any sporting event going up against that in the States,
:37:17. > :37:22.but it is disappointing to see a crowd like this, to be honest. You
:37:23. > :37:27.would expect this to be completely packed. It is a disappointing crowd.
:37:28. > :37:32.Are you surprised about the surface choice, John? When I heard about it,
:37:33. > :37:40.I presumed in Jim Courier's mind, he has to think that, you know,
:37:41. > :37:43.obviously Isner would have a chance against Andy Murray, and obviously
:37:44. > :37:50.to make sure that number two was taken care of but that it could come
:37:51. > :37:54.down to the doubles. I thought that the Bryans would have something to
:37:55. > :37:57.say on that, but I am surprised about the surface.
:37:58. > :38:01.One of the reasons that Jim Courier chose the surface was hoping that
:38:02. > :38:05.Andy Murray would not play. Knowing the back history. Knowing he does
:38:06. > :38:11.not fancy a match on clay, but to use that as a reason would be
:38:12. > :38:16.surprising on home court territory? Yes.
:38:17. > :38:20.It has cost a lot of money to install the temporary clay-court it
:38:21. > :38:25.is never easy. Normally in an ideal world you give a court like this
:38:26. > :38:31.time to bed in. That has not happened. That is why it has been
:38:32. > :38:36.slippery in practise. A lot of the players have been talking about
:38:37. > :38:38.that. No slips or slides, though so far. The second set. The best of
:38:39. > :39:12.five. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:39:13. > :39:16.That's far away Donald Young's best point so far. He was able to move
:39:17. > :39:41.his opponent. And that is pretty much the story of
:39:42. > :39:46.his career in two points. A decent point but the inconsistency is
:39:47. > :39:52.holding him back. Absolutely.
:39:53. > :39:57.That was a shocking forehand. Mid-way up the net there. That is
:39:58. > :40:04.the problem. A little bit of panic is setting into his game.
:40:05. > :40:08.It can easily happen when you are up against someone like Andy Murray,
:40:09. > :40:14.with the best of five. You feel like you can't hit winners against him.
:40:15. > :40:17.Fortunately, although that was a decent serve, he will not get many
:40:18. > :41:13.cheap points on his serve, either. Oh! A classic Andy Murray!
:41:14. > :41:15.Absolutely classic. Grinding down his opponent and finishing the point
:41:16. > :42:04.in style. The other factor here, of course, if
:42:05. > :42:08.Andy Murray can get this done very quickly, almost certainly he will be
:42:09. > :42:14.out to play the doubles tomorrow. It would be a great boost for Britain.
:42:15. > :42:23.I'm sure he wants to play any way, but if this were to be a long three
:42:24. > :42:27.to five hour match-set, it could have been less possible.
:42:28. > :42:30.It could increase the possibility for Dominic Inglot coming into the
:42:31. > :42:35.kwaut et. Yes, whenever you have someone of
:42:36. > :42:39.Andy Murray's stature in the team, you wait until as late as possible
:42:40. > :42:52.in the morning, on the Saturday morning to see if he can play in the
:42:53. > :43:11.doubles match. "Am I playing?" " " know, Andy has
:43:12. > :43:18.not told us yet"! The problem in that game, it is a grind for him to
:43:19. > :43:24.win the points. We have talked about Donald Young's
:43:25. > :43:31.struggles but Andy Murray has been in impressive form. Hardly missed a
:43:32. > :43:36.ball. The few he missed were in the opening game, but he has played
:43:37. > :43:39.really well in the opening game on clay-court.
:43:40. > :43:44.His movement is good. He is sliding well. The balance is good. He does
:43:45. > :44:10.not look rushed. He is in total control at the moment.
:44:11. > :44:21.This is Enri kwushgs e Molina coming down to inspect the line. It has
:44:22. > :44:25.clipped the line. -- Enrigue.
:44:26. > :44:56.He can accurately determine whether it is in or out.
:44:57. > :45:06.Oh! Andy Murray has done so well to keep that rally alive. That will
:45:07. > :45:10.have tested the back. Young trying to put it away at the
:45:11. > :45:15.net. . It is what we have come to expect
:45:16. > :45:18.from Andy Murray now, isn't it? You just want to make your opponent keep
:45:19. > :45:38.playing one more shot in the rally. Murray has improved so much in the
:45:39. > :45:47.forecourt. He is able to build the rally from the start. As soon as
:45:48. > :45:54.there is a snip of opportunity to take the point, he is off. I'm not
:45:55. > :45:56.sure about the speed. 139 miles per hour on a serve.
:45:57. > :46:26.That's generous! Again we talk about classic Murray
:46:27. > :46:31.plays, that is what he is so good at. He spots his opponent coming
:46:32. > :46:35.into the net, doesn't he? He knows exactly where he will be at the
:46:36. > :46:37.right time. So he plays that passing shot with just the right speed so it
:46:38. > :47:56.lands down at the shoe laces. As soon as the rallies go past four
:47:57. > :48:01.or five shots, Murray is in such control. The way he is orchestrating
:48:02. > :48:05.the point and moving his opponent. It looks like he's played on the
:48:06. > :49:26.clay for a long time. Yes, the forehand is looking awesome today.
:49:27. > :49:34.Problems again for Young. He has no clay-court record to speak of at
:49:35. > :49:42.all. You would have to go back to April, 2008 to find the only time he
:49:43. > :49:52.has won a main tour, tour level match on clay.
:49:53. > :49:56.He played challenges on the surfaces last year and lost to all six tour
:49:57. > :50:50.level matches he played in 2013. Another break for Britain. Murray
:50:51. > :50:55.ahead in the second set. Playing with complete control, you
:50:56. > :51:00.feel. He is in complete control of this
:51:01. > :51:08.situation and this match. Here come the brass band again. Did
:51:09. > :51:12.you ship them over for us, Lloyd? I thought they were there for the
:51:13. > :51:17.ild-up but they are playing all the hits and more at the changeovers, so
:51:18. > :51:26.well done to them. San Diego, what a city this is.
:51:27. > :51:31.The gas lamp quarter, is its historic heart. Right by the stadium
:51:32. > :51:39.here. When you go out at night it has a wonderful atmosphere. All of
:51:40. > :51:50.the old-fashioned gas lamps are ng the streets and music coming out of
:51:51. > :51:58.pretty much every bar. It's not a bad view.
:51:59. > :52:07.The other two are saying when will you lend us the binoculars? ! It is
:52:08. > :52:13.a strange stadium, the people at the far end, that is not a great view on
:52:14. > :52:20.the side. That is quite high up. The left side of the picture, part
:52:21. > :52:25.of the baseball stadium. The top tiers are not being used. There are
:52:26. > :52:51.temporary stands around the other three sides.
:52:52. > :52:58.Talking about the record for Young, probably on this surface any other,
:52:59. > :53:03.that it is the most difficult to build confidence on. Other courts
:53:04. > :53:07.you can serve, go for the shots but you have to orchestrate the points
:53:08. > :53:09.so differently on clay. You need years of experience to feelgood on
:53:10. > :53:29.it. Really, it is a completely different
:53:30. > :53:38.art, isn't it, Ross. Moving on clay is so important? Absolutely. It is
:53:39. > :53:43.all about patience on a clay-court. And Murray really learned that about
:53:44. > :53:47.three or four years ago. We did some training camps in Barcelona. It was
:53:48. > :53:52.getting back to basics. Don't go for the cheap shots. Build the points.
:53:53. > :53:56.Get the long rallies. Get your mind used to playing long rallies. Use
:53:57. > :53:59.the fitness, the spin and the court craft. He has done that superbly
:54:00. > :54:30.today. With all that in mind, Ross, it is a
:54:31. > :54:36.surface that should suit his game perfectly? It should. He was
:54:37. > :55:19.training on clay when he was 15 and 16 in Barcelona.
:55:20. > :55:27.And his game has improved huge amounts over the years. The last few
:55:28. > :55:33.years it has. He slides so well these days. He rarely loses to
:55:34. > :55:39.anyone other than Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer. He is so good. He is
:55:40. > :55:42.so good as dispatching the lower ranks.
:55:43. > :55:50.And I think his forehand is so good on play compared to what it used to
:55:51. > :55:52.be. -- on clay compared to what it used
:55:53. > :56:10.to be. There is Leon Smith, the British
:56:11. > :56:15.captain. It is his ninth time as the captain.
:56:16. > :56:44.He has a very good record so far. That's an example of the patience.
:56:45. > :56:49.He is just digging it back somehow. Making you play one more ball. It
:56:50. > :56:54.must be a nightmare over five sets as well. The surface, well, I still
:56:55. > :56:58.don't see how everyone is calling this a fast clay-court. It does not
:56:59. > :57:04.look fast at all. No, not at all. It looks slow and
:57:05. > :57:12.heavy. The conditions are heavy as it is not that warm. The court also
:57:13. > :57:28.looks heavy. Andy was saying it is faster than
:57:29. > :57:37.Roland Garos. That is a fast clay-court.
:57:38. > :57:43.Exactly. It looks like he is playing with
:57:44. > :57:47.tough thoughts in his head. He is very frustrated over the last couple
:57:48. > :57:50.of games. He feels like the match is getting away from him. He does not
:57:51. > :58:11.really know how to count ir. -- How to counter.
:58:12. > :58:15.What should young do to get back in the match? The problem is that he
:58:16. > :58:20.has not got the weapons, that is the problem. Obviously if you are Jim
:58:21. > :58:24.Courier, he is obviously going to exaggerate, to say that this is
:58:25. > :58:28.going to work. To do this a little more. Go for a few more balls on the
:58:29. > :58:32.forehand. Perhaps take chances. The problem is that the styles, the
:58:33. > :58:39.match-up does not work on the surface here against Andy Murray.
:58:40. > :58:44.Now what he is trying to do, it is under standable, he is trying to get
:58:45. > :58:48.more on the serve, the hand. That is what you do do. Unfortunately, that
:58:49. > :59:06.goes straight into the Murray trap here.
:59:07. > :59:48.Two breaks in this second set. The young American has had a lot to
:59:49. > :59:53.say for himself over the course of his career. He's chatting away again
:59:54. > :59:58.there. He should keep his ears open and list on the what the man to his
:59:59. > :00:02.left is going to say if he's to work his way back into this match. You
:00:03. > :00:06.can Tweet us direct to the commentary box. Thank you for
:00:07. > :00:11.getting in touch so far. A lot of you saying the clay looks dodgy. We
:00:12. > :00:15.have talked about the temporary nature of this. They wouldn't be the
:00:16. > :00:23.first, would they, to have problems laying down a temporary clay court?
:00:24. > :00:34.They do need to give it that time to make it play in an ideal manner.
:00:35. > :00:45.He's teaching Young a thing or so out here. Zach Johnson observes this
:00:46. > :00:50.is very slow - "Glad Young is off the mark. Was beginning to feel a
:00:51. > :00:53.little sorry for the guy." I don't think many are on the British bench
:00:54. > :01:03.though. Murray is very professional in this
:01:04. > :01:07.second set. Ar easy and making sure not to allow him back into the
:01:08. > :02:20.third. Not to give him any confidence in the way he's playing.
:02:21. > :02:27.It is a great shot on clay that one. Forehand there. More top spin. Just
:02:28. > :02:29.really got that ball up nice and high. Got himself back into the
:02:30. > :02:46.middle of the court. Murry being the smart person that he
:02:47. > :03:33.is Murray being the smart person that
:03:34. > :03:39.he is. Knowing the Davis Cup - a very
:03:40. > :03:44.experienced player. This This could make a difference if
:03:45. > :04:03.it goes to the end, if Murray continues to demolish him here.
:04:04. > :04:09.Just shaking hands. Saying, you can have this match, I am fed up.
:04:10. > :04:17.Incredible. Have a little look here. That's not
:04:18. > :04:22.bad. That's decent.
:04:23. > :04:27.What about this one? We don't get time to see it. It was decent. That
:04:28. > :04:37.was very good. It was the left-handed defence.
:04:38. > :04:47.It is one of your's. I was going to say one of Tim Henman. This is the
:04:48. > :05:35.previous point - oh, there we go. Look at this!
:05:36. > :05:45.A moment for locals to celebrate here.
:05:46. > :05:53.Getting games on board for Young now. To make him feel he is in this
:05:54. > :05:57.match, he's not really, but psychologically just get some on the
:05:58. > :06:00.board. It must be noticeable from the side of the court - the British
:06:01. > :06:09.support from the team, always standing up. There are a couple of
:06:10. > :06:14.vocal voices. Matt Little and Colin Fleming often sitting down. Not much
:06:15. > :06:21.noise. Not much support. I agree. I think it is a badly-spaced out crowd
:06:22. > :06:25.any way, even if it was full. It is a strange court. For them, your
:06:26. > :06:29.would have thought they would have known in advance. You want an
:06:30. > :06:33.intimate court. You want it packed full and people screaming out there
:06:34. > :06:37.for your team. At the moment, the atmosphere is not there. Obviously
:06:38. > :06:42.their man is getting thumped at if moment. There are too many empty
:06:43. > :06:45.spaces here. And playing the Davis Cup you feel
:06:46. > :06:49.as though, well you are playing for your country. It is not just
:06:50. > :06:56.yourself. On the tour he could be happy, not happy, he could sleep at
:06:57. > :06:58.night - but the Davis Cup, you have the whole team, the nation playing
:06:59. > :07:15.on your mind through every point. Fell for that one!
:07:16. > :07:20.It is not just the quality of the shot, it is the anticipation.
:07:21. > :07:31.He knew where this was going, didn't he? Picked it and goodbye!
:07:32. > :07:37.It is almost like Murray asked the question by leaning his forehand
:07:38. > :08:18.slightly short. Top four or five volleys on the
:08:19. > :08:21.tour, Andy Murray? He would be. It is great to see him using it more
:08:22. > :08:44.regularly the last 12 months. They have not played for an hour yet
:08:45. > :08:57.and here are two set points for Murray to give Great Britain.
:08:58. > :09:12.It may have just clipped the line. Yes, there it is. 2-0, Murray.
:09:13. > :09:15.An xem lent start to this tie for great -- excellent start for this
:09:16. > :09:20.tie for Great Britain. You still have to get the job done and Murray
:09:21. > :09:27.is doing just that. A reminder that Britain have not beaten the USA in
:09:28. > :09:31.the Davis Cup since 1935. What an opportunity for Britain to make some
:09:32. > :09:35.history. It is the elite level of the World Cup of tennis, if you
:09:36. > :09:40.like. It is where you want to be. Eight ties this weekend. Most of
:09:41. > :09:57.them have finished play for the day and will guide guide you there them.
:09:58. > :10:03.Tomas Berdych hitting back. The Czechs who have an amazing
:10:04. > :10:10.record. Japan against Canada, 1-1 after the opening day.
:10:11. > :10:19.Germany against Spain. Well, Spain do not have Nadal. They don't have
:10:20. > :10:25.Ferrer. They don't have Malgragro either. Germany taking advantage,
:10:26. > :10:30.leading 2-0 after the opening day of singles.
:10:31. > :10:34.A mouth-watering tie on paper, France against Australia. A couple
:10:35. > :10:40.of terrific finals around the turn of the sen issurery. Fraps in
:10:41. > :11:29.charge. Australia give -- -- of the century. France in charge.
:11:30. > :11:35.Wawrinka won the Australian Open, maybe he was disappointed at his
:11:36. > :11:40.lack of recent press coverage. Needs to get back into the limelight.
:11:41. > :11:44.Suddenly decided the last minute to play. That was a strange one. I
:11:45. > :11:49.would love to find out why he decided to.
:11:50. > :11:55.Let's face it, if they continue to play Davis Cup this year, they could
:11:56. > :11:58.easily win it. A gold medallist in the doubles as
:11:59. > :12:02.well. What a team! They could win it. I think Wawrinka in the last
:12:03. > :12:07.couple of years has been a little bit annoyed at Federer not playing.
:12:08. > :12:12.I think he felt the same way. I mean it is one thing that Roger
:12:13. > :12:20.Federer has not won is the Davis Cup. That is right. Serbia out.
:12:21. > :12:29.I like the way Novak Djokovic, he was exhausted after the tie and
:12:30. > :12:33.pulled out. Exhausted. He's only just started the year!
:12:34. > :12:39.Played no lead-up events before the Aussie. Needed a holiday.
:12:40. > :12:42.Wouldn't it be something if Britain could get through this and take
:12:43. > :12:46.their place in the quarter-finals. A long way to go, of course. We have
:12:47. > :12:52.coverage across the weekend. The doubles tomorrow. Reverse singles on
:12:53. > :12:57.Sunday. 8pm we'll be on the air tomorrow. A later start for the
:12:58. > :13:02.doubles match. Donald Young just returning after a
:13:03. > :13:05.bathroom break. Courier is not looking so cool as he
:13:06. > :13:42.was at the start of play. Kyle Edmund, his time will
:13:43. > :13:44.THE COMMENTATOR: . -- Kyle Edmund, his time will come.
:13:45. > :14:00.A talent for the future. You have trained with him, I know,
:14:01. > :14:04.Kyle Edmund, out in your Florida boot camp. He works well? He works
:14:05. > :14:11.well. Not only that, he has a big game. He hits the ball very hard.
:14:12. > :14:20.He actually plays most of his tennis on the red clay. Played challenges
:14:21. > :14:24.last year on the clay. We did our Miami training with Andy, karl and
:14:25. > :14:32.myself on the hard courts. It was good for him. Andy was saying it is
:14:33. > :14:47.good to be not too distant from the hard.
:14:48. > :14:56.A point there for Young. A good forehappened there. Nice and high.
:14:57. > :15:02.Gets that short ball there from Murray. Good instincts to get
:15:03. > :15:21.forward there. Likes to be closer to the net, mind you. Got away with it.
:15:22. > :15:29.One shot that Murray seem seems not to use so much is the drop shot. He
:15:30. > :15:32.used to use it so often. Every big point, it used to be Andy would hit
:15:33. > :15:52.the drop shot and often do it well. Young quoung would have felt --
:15:53. > :15:56.Young would have felt confident. A big occasion, on the big Centre
:15:57. > :16:00.Court. Would have used those memories
:16:01. > :16:04.pre-match and talked to Jim Courier about those memories and how he
:16:05. > :16:09.played well and how his tactics worked. It is a far different story
:16:10. > :16:14.so far. Murray really focussed on making sure he's 100% fit and ready
:16:15. > :16:19.mentally for this match. It is a bad surface match up for him
:16:20. > :16:24.too. On the hard courts where he can get a few cheaper winners here and
:16:25. > :16:28.there. He can explode a bit on that forehand and get behind Murray a
:16:29. > :16:34.couple of times here and there. On the clay Murray tracks everything
:16:35. > :16:56.down. So tough for him to get any penetration on these ground strokes.
:16:57. > :17:07.What was your debut match, John? Do you remember? I don't think any of
:17:08. > :17:17.us can - it's too far back! I'll look it up, as they say!
:17:18. > :17:27.Oh, dear, I have put p John Lloyd into the website and it says "Sorry,
:17:28. > :17:31.no results have been found! " It doesn't go back that far - is that
:17:32. > :17:36.what you are trying to say in a nice way.
:17:37. > :17:41.Young steps it up. Now is as good a time as any! That is what you were
:17:42. > :17:46.saying pre-match. Young has to go up there and swing. Get rid of the
:17:47. > :18:19.nerves, let lose. He has nothing to lose.
:18:20. > :18:27.As soon as young thought he'd got a glimpse of confidence, oh I am
:18:28. > :18:45.playing well again, Murray comes out with two well constructed point.
:18:46. > :18:48.Nothing can go wrong with it. Beautifully produced.
:18:49. > :18:52.I think that is a good play though from Young. I know he missed that.
:18:53. > :18:56.Every time he gets a second serve from Murray he has to be aggressive
:18:57. > :18:59.and go at him. That is the best chance he's got of going ahead in
:19:00. > :19:18.the rally - doing something. 1-1 in the third set. I think I have
:19:19. > :19:25.found out why you cannot remember your Davis Cup debut. Lost 5-0 to
:19:26. > :19:29.Egypt. It was a nightmare I was banished from my thought. You lost a
:19:30. > :19:35.couple of guys I have never heard of, out in Cairo in 1971. It was
:19:36. > :19:59.hot! Suffice to say your career went upwards from there.
:20:00. > :20:08.This one here, he has been doing so well with that during the match.
:20:09. > :21:28.That one went on the service line. A chance for Young to swing hard.
:21:29. > :21:35.That return is pure quality. A big first serve using the squash shot
:21:36. > :22:41.forehand and replacing it on the baseline.
:22:42. > :22:51.Two sets and a break. Andy Murray in firm charge in the opening of this
:22:52. > :22:55.Davis Cup tie. Quite a tradition, as Ross and John will know all too well
:22:56. > :23:01.s the laugh a minute official dinner, which you have to go to on
:23:02. > :23:05.the eve of the tie. A few pictures are swirling around the internet and
:23:06. > :23:10.papers. You may have seen it of the two teams lining up. Britain looking
:23:11. > :23:14.very smart in their suits. The question was posed by one of the
:23:15. > :23:18.newspapers - is this the scuffyiest team in sport? This is why - have a
:23:19. > :23:24.look at this! Now, that is Britain on the left.
:23:25. > :23:28.Now, come on America! You can do better than that! This is the
:23:29. > :23:34.official Davis Cup dinner we are talking about!
:23:35. > :23:40.What is all that about, Ross! ? You could teach them a lesson on
:23:41. > :23:44.elegance. Some in jeans. Hands everywhere.
:23:45. > :23:58.My, gosh clam GB team looking immense.
:23:59. > :24:04.It is surprising when their captain is so passionate about wearing a
:24:05. > :25:12.suit, he didn't get his players in them.
:25:13. > :25:20.Beautiful from Murray, taking it on nice and early. Sweet timing.
:25:21. > :25:23.Showing Young. He hit that ball, returned hard, but in the wrong
:25:24. > :25:30.direction. Into the Hything zone there of Murray's -- into the
:25:31. > :26:05.hitting zone there of Murray's. He's not thinking. He's panicking.
:26:06. > :26:12.At what point do you think Jim Courier could say, you are not going
:26:13. > :26:17.to win this match, let's get some good feelings for Sunday? It is not
:26:18. > :26:22.looking good. It could come down to a big match. That will be on
:26:23. > :26:27.Courier's mind. No question. He would not have expected Donald
:26:28. > :26:29.Young to have won this match, but he would have expected this to have
:26:30. > :27:30.been closer. Some great forehands there. That
:27:31. > :27:34.first from Murray was four feet behind the baseline and high.
:27:35. > :27:38.Managed to generate so much pace and put Young on the defensive and then
:27:39. > :27:54.follow in with it. Another big forehand.
:27:55. > :28:06.It is a far more positive attitude from Young.
:28:07. > :28:10.Serve out wide and then you crush the next ball - we haven't seen that
:28:11. > :28:40.from Young today. That is typical Murray. He said to
:28:41. > :28:45.me a few years ago, you p don't always have to hit winners in tennis
:28:46. > :28:50.because players make errors when they move. There is a prime example
:28:51. > :28:53.- always keeping your opponent on a string. A great tip that.
:28:54. > :29:21.I am going to write that down. Oh! Super speed reactions for
:29:22. > :30:27.Murray. That is OK. It's the Davis Cup. Take
:30:28. > :30:31.that. It was going wide, wasn't it? I
:30:32. > :30:32.think that the tape brought it back in.
:30:33. > :31:42.Sorry, mate. Not your day! Gutsy play from the American player.
:31:43. > :31:46.He needed that. Much better from Donald Young
:31:47. > :32:05.towards the end of that game. Well played!
:32:06. > :32:12.There Donald Young was laughing and smiling a bit. A little bit of
:32:13. > :32:15.encouragement. You can see the way that Jim Courier reacted when he won
:32:16. > :32:20.that game. He is still down, but anything now to just give him a
:32:21. > :32:29.little bit of positive news out here.
:32:30. > :32:37.What was it like playing that Davis Cup final, John, in 1978? You played
:32:38. > :32:43.John McEnroe, didn't you? That was not a pleasant memory. He was a
:32:44. > :32:49.little too good to put it mildly. When I played it was about 80
:32:50. > :32:56.degrees. By the time we finished a match, it was about 3.30pm, 4.00pm,
:32:57. > :33:03.when the sun went down over the mountains, it was suddenly by 6.00pm
:33:04. > :33:09.freezing cold. People were wearing fur coats, you were allowed to in
:33:10. > :33:13.those days, and blankets and it went on in about midnight. A great
:33:14. > :33:19.atmosphere but they were a bit too good for us that day.
:33:20. > :33:25.Do you think we will see the day when Britain plays the final of the
:33:26. > :33:30.Davis Cup again? If Murray plays. You can, almost against any team,
:33:31. > :33:36.apart from Spain away, or maybe Serbia away on clay, perhaps, Murray
:33:37. > :33:41.can going to win on two singles. You only have to win one more match and
:33:42. > :33:57.you win the tie. We have great doubles. Andy would be top five in
:33:58. > :34:04.the world, if he played. So why not? Did you used to play all games? I
:34:05. > :34:39.played it at some times. It was tough, but sometimes you just did
:34:40. > :34:43.it. That was definitely long. Donald
:34:44. > :34:47.Young has not seen this sort of situation. Two break points on the
:34:48. > :35:30.Murray serve. The first of the match. He is looking enthused, isn't
:35:31. > :35:35.he? I thought he was going to lose that point with the drop-shot. Young
:35:36. > :35:40.was under it quickly. He anticipated it this one. That was unbelievable.
:35:41. > :35:48.A half volley lob. Whatever you call that. A half ground stroke lob.
:35:49. > :36:23.He obviously feels there has not been enough tension in this match!
:36:24. > :36:30.So close. Yeah, it looked good when it pinged
:36:31. > :36:34.off Young's racket. Oh, he has given it. He scuffed the mark with his
:36:35. > :36:38.shoe. The international sign of it is in.
:36:39. > :37:29.What a return that was. A heck of a serve from Murray.
:37:30. > :37:44.That was definitely the best passage of tennis from Young in the last two
:37:45. > :38:22.or three games. He can play with a bit of freedom.
:38:23. > :38:27.He is more loose. Was it a wrong-footing tactic that
:38:28. > :38:31.on clay? Absolutely. Because of the movement, you are sliding one way,
:38:32. > :38:36.you have to move back the other way. The best clay-court players know
:38:37. > :38:52.when to use the back behind wrong-footing shot.
:38:53. > :39:01.Andy Murray will be desperate to put this game to bed.
:39:02. > :39:06.He was looking for a quick-fix on the last forehand. He knows if he
:39:07. > :39:17.can play solid for a couple of more games, he should be OK.
:39:18. > :39:19.A big serve. There is a heavy atmosphere out there.
:39:20. > :39:55.He is cranking it up. Young had a couple of break points
:39:56. > :40:11.but still could not get it done. Two games away now from putting
:40:12. > :40:17.Britain in front in this tie. James Ward against Sam Querrey to
:40:18. > :40:23.follow. Querrey is the USA number one in the tie, after John Isner
:40:24. > :40:29.pulled out. Isner has had some terrible trouble
:40:30. > :40:37.lately, Ross? He has had knee trouble. This time ankle trouble. He
:40:38. > :40:43.picked up the injury in Perth at the Hopman Cup. He said he was in pain
:40:44. > :40:47.in the match. He had to pull out of the first-round match of the
:40:48. > :40:50.Australian Open, having lost the first two sets.
:40:51. > :40:55.And you actually saw him hobble on to the court for that match, didn't
:40:56. > :40:59.you? I did. And off the court. I was in the gym that you have to walk
:41:00. > :41:04.past as you walk back from the outside court. He could hardly walk.
:41:05. > :41:11.I looked at my coach, on the bench, I thought, there was no way he would
:41:12. > :41:15.be ready next week. Even though he won that title in
:41:16. > :41:21.Auckland, you have to wonder why he played that tournament? So often,
:41:22. > :41:26.that is actually John Isner's girlfriend on the left. Often we see
:41:27. > :41:31.a top player. He is a top player. He is name is always in the running for
:41:32. > :41:35.the hard core events, dangerous opponent. He miss the week before.
:41:36. > :41:43.So if you make the final of Auckland, that Isner did, you play
:41:44. > :41:48.on the Sunday. If you have a dodgy ankle that means
:41:49. > :42:02.trouble. Trouble here for Donald Young. A sixth double fault.
:42:03. > :42:33.This really couldn't have gone much better for Andy Murray.
:42:34. > :43:23.Andy Murray has done well here. He is looking in really good shape.
:43:24. > :43:27.He plays so well. He could be a top five doubles player without a
:43:28. > :43:48.question. Well Donald Young hangs on. At least
:43:49. > :43:52.he has not capitulated in the third set. If you look at his career
:43:53. > :43:57.record it is not the best at suggesting he has the stomach for a
:43:58. > :44:02.fight, let's put it that way. There are some things in tennis you
:44:03. > :44:09.don't look so deep into, but playing in a five-set match, you want to
:44:10. > :44:14.know the statistics. If you go two sets up against Young, how does he
:44:15. > :44:18.react? It fills you with confidence to start strong. Murray does not
:44:19. > :44:23.need anymore confidence, having played away in the USA but he knows
:44:24. > :44:27.this for sure. And John, as captain of the Davis
:44:28. > :44:32.Cup team, I suppose you cannot help but look ahead. The tie could come
:44:33. > :44:37.down to the fifth and the final rubber, that would involve Donald
:44:38. > :44:43.Young, if it came to it. So if you are in Leon Smith's shoes, you are
:44:44. > :44:49.feeling positive? You are feeling very happy right now. Absolutely.
:44:50. > :44:51.That's the format of the World Group this year.
:44:52. > :45:02.It is simple, the Davis Cup when you look at it at the World Group there.
:45:03. > :45:09.It is not normally one team you expect can make their way through.
:45:10. > :45:29.Canadian last year, Kazakhstan in the previous years. It is not always
:45:30. > :45:36.the big teams. Oh! Well, he almost got away with
:45:37. > :45:39.that, Young. The first approach shot was suicidal on the first one. He
:45:40. > :45:45.somehow got away with it. This one here, he was way too far to come
:45:46. > :45:50.back in. He was hitting a half volley from there.
:45:51. > :45:52.He actually flicked a good shot. Murray had to hit a heck of a
:45:53. > :47:00.passing shot to get away with that. Young has more confidence. He is
:47:01. > :47:05.trusting his forehand. If he doesn't hit the forehand, he is limited. As
:47:06. > :47:08.you said, he is one-dimensional, but when he does release, he has some
:47:09. > :47:51.pop. That's the forehand we were talking
:47:52. > :47:55.about. So many times in the past, Murray chose the backhand. Now he is
:47:56. > :48:31.explosive anywhere on the court. One new edition to the Andy Murray
:48:32. > :48:34.schedule. Staying on to play on clay in Mexico.
:48:35. > :48:39.It has been changed this year for the first time. They changed it to
:48:40. > :48:59.get more players like Andy Murray. There you go.
:49:00. > :49:31.Just a brilliant point. He is manoeuvring Young all over the
:49:32. > :49:36.place. He is so accurate. That is difficult. You are sliding
:49:37. > :49:43.one way, the ball is passing you on the other side.
:49:44. > :49:45.Well, Andy Murray, you could fancy on any softwares. Two points from
:49:46. > :50:09.victory. A beautiful sequence. The forehands
:50:10. > :50:26.from Andy Murray. To bring up match point.
:50:27. > :50:34.That will do! He played one of those earlier in the match, didn't he?
:50:35. > :50:42.That really could not have gone better for Andy Murray. 6-1, 6-2,
:50:43. > :50:47.6-3. A expensive demolition of Donald Young. With el, he was gutsy
:50:48. > :50:53.in the third set. He did not let Andy Murray run away with it, but
:50:54. > :50:57.Murray, showed his class out there. So professional. The way he came up
:50:58. > :51:02.against a Davis Cup rookie. He did not allow him time to settle. It was
:51:03. > :51:08.not like he would feel his way in. It was business from the first point
:51:09. > :51:12.to try to get through to Donald Young here. To put doubts in his
:51:13. > :51:19.mind. He is smiling now. He got through the match, but his
:51:20. > :51:28.confidence will have been dented by this. Andy Murray would, frankly,
:51:29. > :51:34.apart from doing the rubber, if it goes to the rubber, it would have
:51:35. > :51:37.knocked the stuffing out of Donald Young's confidence.
:51:38. > :51:42.Interesting to see Jim Courier to crack a smile. That was smart. To
:51:43. > :51:46.make him feel he is still a part of the team. Not to worry about that.
:51:47. > :51:53.That he has a big role to play on Sunday. Let's get over it and look
:51:54. > :51:59.ahead. Now he is off to read the news. That is what he looks like.
:52:00. > :52:02.Straight sets win for Andy Murray. That will delight many of the
:52:03. > :52:09.British fans who have travelled to San Diego. Just what they wanted. An
:52:10. > :52:14.hour-and-a-half of brilliance from Andy Murray. Certainly silencing the
:52:15. > :52:18.American fans and demoralising Donald Young. He has two days to
:52:19. > :52:24.think about a crucial singles match on Sunday? Exactly. What a start for
:52:25. > :52:28.Great Britain. For Andy Murray. It is what Leon Smith would have wanted
:52:29. > :52:34.to. Have a run out. To have a tester but to be comfortable. To be
:52:35. > :52:37.convincing. To demoralise and abolish all confidence from the
:52:38. > :52:43.American player. And he will have to play again as the Americans selected
:52:44. > :52:48.two singles and two doubles players. Yes, you worry. That is the danger
:52:49. > :52:55.with two doubles players. If there injury, it can work against you. But
:52:56. > :53:00.he got through it. For Andy, he came out so business-like. For the first
:53:01. > :53:05.two games he dictated the match? He played a superb clay-court tennis
:53:06. > :53:11.match. Constructing the points. Attacking, moving well. You never
:53:12. > :53:14.know when you have not played clay-court tennis. Andy only played
:53:15. > :53:21.one match on clay since last year, the two matches, sorry. So not much
:53:22. > :53:26.clay-court tennis. Just five days of practise. Yet look how he is moving.
:53:27. > :53:31.Playing so well. And when the rallies are extended he is in
:53:32. > :53:35.control. Controlling the middle of the court. And when defending he is
:53:36. > :53:41.moving well. Against players like young Querrey, he plays superior,
:53:42. > :53:45.and Young, he played so well today. And you know how much the back has
:53:46. > :53:48.been an issue for Andy Murray. How difficult the year has been for him.
:53:49. > :53:54.It must have been a worry going back on to the clay courts? It was. That
:53:55. > :53:59.is what the American team were hoping. That it was an issue, the
:54:00. > :54:03.back. It was not a guarantee that Andy Murray would be fit. He started
:54:04. > :54:08.slowly. Training on the hard court so it was better for the back.
:54:09. > :54:12.Training, hoping that he would be there in San Diego but we shall see,
:54:13. > :54:16.but Australia was key. Getting through it safely. Playing a tough
:54:17. > :54:23.match against Roger Federer. Now he is here. Looking as good as new.
:54:24. > :54:27.Moving well. Some tension but the physios will work hard tonight. That
:54:28. > :54:31.is for sure. He probably spends more time getting
:54:32. > :54:32.treatment after, than being on court.
:54:33. > :54:39.He does. But a great start. Let's show you
:54:40. > :54:43.some of the points that Andy delivered early on.
:54:44. > :54:48.We wanted him to make a great start, but boy, not giving Young any time
:54:49. > :54:54.to even think about a game plan. He is so experienced on the Davis
:54:55. > :55:00.Cup situation, he knew the value of putting Young down early on. We
:55:01. > :55:05.talked that when the rallies go deep, Andy Murray uses his forehand
:55:06. > :55:09.90% of the time. That is when you know that he is in for a tough day
:55:10. > :55:12.for his opponent. He controlled the middle of the court well.
:55:13. > :55:17.Anticipation for Andy Murray is the key to him, but he has looked in
:55:18. > :55:20.great form. He played very well. You wonder how the first couple of sets
:55:21. > :55:26.of a match will be, when you have nod played on a surface, but the
:55:27. > :55:29.whole court game was stunning today and more to look forward to in the
:55:30. > :55:35.next few days. What a point this was. The break
:55:36. > :55:38.point. The dop-shot. You think, what is going to happen now? He was
:55:39. > :55:43.playing with him. It is a sign of his class. When
:55:44. > :55:48.Young played better, Andy was able to respond. He played the match in
:55:49. > :55:53.second or third gear. Here Young started to play better. Andy Murray
:55:54. > :55:59.flipped into another gear. Stepping up again. He was really, really up
:56:00. > :56:03.for the snatch. He gave Young no chance to come back.
:56:04. > :56:06.The perfect start for Great Britain. Let's hear from Andy. He is talking
:56:07. > :56:12.to Russell. Very, very well played. A fabulous
:56:13. > :56:17.start for you, and a dream start for Great Britain? It is important to
:56:18. > :56:21.get off to a good start. The two singles matches, I am going in as
:56:22. > :56:26.favourite, Sam is against James. So it puts the pressure on Sam a lot to
:56:27. > :56:32.play a good match. James, hopefully, he can play a little bit more
:56:33. > :56:36.freely. It was a good start. There have been concerns about the
:56:37. > :56:41.court in the build-up. Seeming slower than anticipated. How did you
:56:42. > :56:45.find it? Was it easy to keep your footing? It is slippy. Tough to
:56:46. > :56:49.change the directions, but the conditions, it has been raining in
:56:50. > :56:52.the evening. It will is cold. There is a lot of cloud cover. So the
:56:53. > :56:58.court will play slower because of that. It is a little more damp. The
:56:59. > :57:04.first few days we were here, the sun was out. It was dry. The court was
:57:05. > :57:08.uncomfortable to move on. So the conditions like this help it.
:57:09. > :57:13.I know you will chat with the captain but is your expectation to
:57:14. > :57:18.play the doubles with Colin Fleming tomorrow? We will have to see. The
:57:19. > :57:23.captain, the team will be involved in the discussion. To see the best
:57:24. > :57:27.way forward. A little depends on the next match as well. That can
:57:28. > :57:30.influence things. So we will have to wait and see.
:57:31. > :57:35.A bit of pressure on Sam Querrey. James Ward has shown in Davis Cup
:57:36. > :57:40.over the last three or four years he can be a feisty competitor? Yeah.
:57:41. > :57:46.Like I say, a lot of the times he goes into the matches as the
:57:47. > :57:50.underdog. He has played some big matches in the Davis Cup. So
:57:51. > :57:54.hopefully, he has practised well in the last couple of days. I hope he
:57:55. > :57:58.puts on a good performance. A great start, Andy. Go and join the
:57:59. > :58:05.team. Gosh, it does not even look like he
:58:06. > :58:12.has had a warm-up. He said cold, he should be here. It is nice
:58:13. > :58:24.conditions in some way, but what a great start. Talking to Ross there.
:58:25. > :58:30.He did not put a foot wrong. Well, he gets the balls, after a
:58:31. > :58:35.while Donald Young ran out of ideas. He did not know what to do. It was a
:58:36. > :58:41.crushing performance by Andy Murray. He got in and did not let him get
:58:42. > :58:44.ahead. It must have been crushing for Donald Young in the first Davis
:58:45. > :58:48.Cup rubber. You know what it is like being in
:58:49. > :58:53.the team competition. It is the team spirit. He has given the team the
:58:54. > :58:57.perfect start? Absolutely. And James Ward, the number one player, he has
:58:58. > :59:01.gone out and won three straight sets. Now this is almost a free
:59:02. > :59:07.match. Leon Smith at the start, in the back of his mind, he did not
:59:08. > :59:11.think that James Ward would beat Sam Querrey. Obviously he has a chance
:59:12. > :59:16.but this is a bonus match. James Ward is a good Davis Cup player. A
:59:17. > :59:22.good record. No reason he can't take on Sam Querrey. Two big fellows. Sam
:59:23. > :59:26.Querrey will be nervous, if he loses the match the tie is over. The
:59:27. > :59:31.pressure switches. This is what makes the Davis Cup fun.
:59:32. > :59:36.I always wanted to play first in the teem event. I did not like the wait
:59:37. > :59:41.in the locker room. How is James as a competitor? He will be fine. He is
:59:42. > :59:47.experienced. It is tougher for Sam Querrey. He has just watched his
:59:48. > :59:51.fellow countryman take a defeat. Now he is playing against a guy he knows
:59:52. > :59:54.is dangerous. James Ward is a dangerous player with a good Davis
:59:55. > :59:59.Cup record. James has beaten him in the past. So a tough match for Sam
:00:00. > :00:03.Querrey now. He will have to use his experience to start well. To lift
:00:04. > :00:13.the crowd back up. To lift the team-mates back up. Querrey will
:00:14. > :00:18.have to work harder. Against a pairing like Andy Murray and Young,
:00:19. > :00:22.he may have expected more but for Sam Querrey, it is a must-win match
:00:23. > :00:28.otherwise the tie is over. It will be hard for Jim Courier to
:00:29. > :00:33.build Donald Young up again. He was demolished out on court that is hard
:00:34. > :00:36.to take? That is when Jim Courier, if it comes to the fifth, that is
:00:37. > :00:40.where he earns his money. He will tell you are playing someone
:00:41. > :00:45.slightly different if it comes to the fifth, but the confidence will
:00:46. > :00:47.have been dented after that performance. Andy Murray played
:00:48. > :00:52.great but Donald Young did not play well. He was nervous. Not moving
:00:53. > :01:05.well. The game plan was not good. They will have to do the chatting to
:01:06. > :01:10.get him back up again. It hasn't happened, but there is
:01:11. > :01:14.immense pressure on those sort of players when you get it so young. We
:01:15. > :01:21.have seen it so many, many times before. It didn't happen for him. He
:01:22. > :01:25.is very enclosed. His mother, who coaches him, does not let him mingle
:01:26. > :01:30.with many players. In his mind he's very much an outsider. Bursting into
:01:31. > :01:35.this big tie in the world group - it was a bit much for him in this
:01:36. > :01:39.opening match. That is one reason he started so poorly. It would have
:01:40. > :01:43.been tough. Having beaten Murray before, he would have had confidence
:01:44. > :01:48.going into the match. The whole atmosphere seemed to get too much.
:01:49. > :01:52.It was not that noisy there. It was not too overbearing. He seemed to
:01:53. > :01:57.struggle out there. That is more positive news for the British camp
:01:58. > :02:00.and forward Ward, who will not look forward to Sunday because he has a
:02:01. > :02:05.big match now. Nothing to be scared of this weekend. He has the feel
:02:06. > :02:11.against Young. Leon Smith will know that. He is very good Leon Smith and
:02:12. > :02:17.has a good relationship with James Ward. All looking good so far for
:02:18. > :02:22.the Brits. Ward will be ready. He's, as Andy said, practiced all week. I
:02:23. > :02:27.have heard that news from the camp - practiced superbly all week. It is
:02:28. > :02:32.tough when you play your first Davis Cup event. When you hear - we didn't
:02:33. > :02:37.hear it very often - going to the United States, but when you are
:02:38. > :02:41.representing a country that is not game young - it is a different
:02:42. > :02:46.experiencing. There's nothing like it. I still think the Davis Cup,
:02:47. > :02:51.particularly to win a fifth rub ser the toughest thing in sport, other
:02:52. > :02:58.-- fifth rubber is the toughest thing in sport, other than... It is
:02:59. > :03:02.pretty nasty it is fun to watch, but not to play it. Talking of fun,
:03:03. > :03:08.we'll have some fun here because your best mate Andy Murray, he was
:03:09. > :03:14.on social media, he was replying to a tweet, where he hinted that he and
:03:15. > :03:19.his girlfriend may get married after Wimbledon. This is what he had to
:03:20. > :03:24.say after that. We'll have to wait and see. Maybe in the next couple of
:03:25. > :03:30.years. I hope that people now I would not announce when I am getting
:03:31. > :03:36.engaged or getting married on Twitter or on TV. Kim might be the
:03:37. > :03:41.first to know? And my family would know first. I am not sure I would be
:03:42. > :03:48.releasing it to the press - that's for sure. Oh, an awkward moment! You
:03:49. > :03:53.cannot have a joke on Twitter, can you? It reminds me of a couple of
:03:54. > :03:59.years ago, we were at dinner having a pizza. We announced I would be his
:04:00. > :04:04.next coach. Everyone was jumping on. That as if I, a 24-year-old person,
:04:05. > :04:09.a friend of his, would be coaching the world number four. Everyone
:04:10. > :04:14.brought that as well! I am sure they will get married very soon. They are
:04:15. > :04:19.a great couple. You would know better than anyone. Kim is a great
:04:20. > :04:24.girl and it will happen. I am not sure that Twitter would know before
:04:25. > :04:29.Kim. Exactly. They are not rushing into it, are they? They are very
:04:30. > :04:35.happy. They have been together how long? Eight years? They are very
:04:36. > :04:38.happy. They have the two dogs, as you saw when you did the
:04:39. > :04:44.documentary. It will happen in future - that's for sure. Andy
:04:45. > :04:50.enjoys Twitter, doesn't he? In future we have to know he is often
:04:51. > :04:55.sarcastic. He's learnt a lesson - that is for sure! A light moment as
:04:56. > :05:01.well, another Davis Cup match taking place is Switzerland, they are
:05:02. > :05:05.taking on Serbia. Wawrinka and Federer made a late
:05:06. > :05:12.decision to turn up. A very funny moment. They are on the right of the
:05:13. > :05:16.photo here. Oh, sorry, Stan, you may have won the Australian Open, but
:05:17. > :05:22.that is one way to stop you being the number one! Elbowed him in the
:05:23. > :05:27.eye. Took him down a level! It is interesting. Roger isn't even the
:05:28. > :05:31.number one Swiss right now. What a team! I am so glad he's playing the
:05:32. > :05:35.match. If he commits they could win the Davis Cup. Is there anything
:05:36. > :05:41.else that Roger Federer has not won, other than the Davis Cup? Maybe a
:05:42. > :05:47.gold medal and the singles - why not go for it Has not played since 2012.
:05:48. > :05:50.Had to be encouraged to play. He has a great relationship with his
:05:51. > :05:55.captain who travels with him a lot of the time. I was fascinated to see
:05:56. > :06:00.his name pop up on the list and Djokovic drop out. It is interesting
:06:01. > :06:04.to see why he is playing this match. It is almost he wants to play with
:06:05. > :06:09.Wawrinka. Yes, he might want to win. They will win any way without
:06:10. > :06:13.Federer. I think he may want to stay with Stan and not lose too much of
:06:14. > :06:17.the bragging rights or the media coverage maybe. You were right
:06:18. > :06:21.talking about that in commentary. Roger will make the news when he is
:06:22. > :06:26.there. Let's look at the world group draw. That match between Switzerland
:06:27. > :06:32.and Serbia, that is at the bottom. Serbia, no Djokovic.
:06:33. > :06:36.At the top, the holders, the Czech Republic - 1-1 in their match. We
:06:37. > :06:40.will keep a close eye on Argentina against Italy. The winner of this
:06:41. > :06:44.match will face Argentina at home, Italy away. That will be in April.
:06:45. > :06:49.The losers play in September. Kazakhstan are two up. It is
:06:50. > :06:54.interesting that Great Britain are the lowest rank team - 18. It is all
:06:55. > :06:59.done on former matches. Of course Andy has not played all of them, I
:07:00. > :07:04.guess. No, he has not played that many in the past. They did well
:07:05. > :07:10.without him. Evans did well. Edmund was ready the last, playing
:07:11. > :07:17.well. The Spanish - no Nadal, no Ferrer. They are play playing - so a
:07:18. > :07:22.tough start in charge. Looking back to Andy, he's the forefront of the
:07:23. > :07:25.British team. A very strong player and started us off so well there.
:07:26. > :07:32.You were his hitting partner, wornt you, down at thes of -- wrpt you,
:07:33. > :07:38.down at the -- weren't you, down at the Aussie? I made sure he was
:07:39. > :07:43.covered. I wanted to take Lendl's place. He does not hit it well these
:07:44. > :07:49.days. I want you to say that to his face one day! He's often asking me
:07:50. > :07:55.to hit with him. I wonder why he doesn't hit more. We joke about who
:07:56. > :07:59.would win on the singles court. Lendl always say, give me a few
:08:00. > :08:06.weeks on the clay and then we'll have a match. He wants to shed the
:08:07. > :08:10.weight a little bit. He hits a sweet ball. What is great to see when he's
:08:11. > :08:14.around is how he controls Murray's sessions. He is the dominant force.
:08:15. > :08:22.In the past Andy says what he wants to do, but p Lendl commands how Andy
:08:23. > :08:28.should -- but Lendl commands how Andy should play.
:08:29. > :08:34.He thought he would beat him easily. Lendl is such a competitor. I saw
:08:35. > :08:40.video footage. Every day, he pretty much plays golf. Every day, half an
:08:41. > :08:46.hour straight. In Miami, when we were training a couple of months ago
:08:47. > :08:49.with Murray - have you ever used the vertical climber. Half an hour
:08:50. > :08:56.straight every day, which is what he does. He's in some serious shape. I
:08:57. > :09:00.never saw him when he was playing. I heard he trained very hard. He has
:09:01. > :09:05.that mind over matter sense in his mind. Jez is in good shape as well
:09:06. > :09:12.and often takes the sessions with us and trains hard. A great effort and
:09:13. > :09:18.great player. Why did you look at John and say, do you use the
:09:19. > :09:23.climber? The cross trainer is as far as I'll go. That is for sure! We
:09:24. > :09:27.have plenty coming up over the weekend. Plenty of sport on the BBC.
:09:28. > :09:31.Of course we have James Ward coming up later on. We'll be back tomorrow
:09:32. > :09:36.for the all-important doubles. We hope that Andy Murray will be
:09:37. > :09:41.playing in that up against the Bryan brothers. That will be crucial. We
:09:42. > :09:46.start live at 8pm. Over on BBC Two, if it continues, from 11pm. I say it
:09:47. > :09:51.is James Ward coming up. That is what we are staying for. Football
:09:52. > :09:56.Focus tomorrow, that is live from mid-day on BBC One. Live from
:09:57. > :10:46.Goodison Park. And then we have a big weekend of rugby coming up.
:10:47. > :10:50.February kicks off tomorrow and so does the Six Nations. All the
:10:51. > :10:56.matches on Saturday. The holders, Wales, against Italy at 2pm. Then
:10:57. > :11:01.live from Paris, it is France against England. What a mouth
:11:02. > :11:06.watering Six Nations opener that is. We'll be there on Sunday for Ireland
:11:07. > :11:10.against Scotland. The first weekend of the Six Nations gets under way.
:11:11. > :11:15.That is all on BBC One. Back to this match and of course
:11:16. > :11:21.plenty of pressure on the players but also on the captain, Leon Smith.
:11:22. > :11:25.A great record out of the eight matches he's been in charge since
:11:26. > :11:30.2010. He's won seven of them. Let's hear from him. We have two
:11:31. > :11:35.established players out with Andy. We've had a great of -- group of
:11:36. > :11:40.players with James Ward and Evans, who have done well for us in the
:11:41. > :11:44.Davis Cup and beaten highly-ranked players. We had Kyle Edmund, brought
:11:45. > :11:48.into the team, because he's an up and coming player. He has a very
:11:49. > :11:52.bright future in tennis. Having got everyone together, looking at the
:11:53. > :11:56.court, the way it is playing and in the Davis Cup looking at the
:11:57. > :12:03.match-ups as well, I think that is what James got the slight nod over
:12:04. > :12:08.Kyle, over the nod-ups. I was looking forward to seeing Kyle
:12:09. > :12:12.Edmund play. When you look at the court, that it is quicker. He
:12:13. > :12:18.expected it to be a slower clay court. Kyle has won a couple of
:12:19. > :12:26.tournaments in America. He has gone for the experience. I think it was
:12:27. > :12:31.more the fact that when Isner pulled out. If Isner had played, I think he
:12:32. > :12:34.would have put Kyle Edmund in. Logically speaking, he would have
:12:35. > :12:39.gone into this match if Isner was playing thinking he would have to
:12:40. > :12:42.win. The two singles with Andy Murray and the doubles. The number
:12:43. > :12:46.two was probably going to lose. Once Donald Young came in, now his
:12:47. > :12:50.thought changes. He thinks they can win that match and James Ward has
:12:51. > :12:54.had experience in the Davis Cup. Kyle Edmund, as much as he is
:12:55. > :12:57.promising, we don't know how he'll react. You have to give James Ward a
:12:58. > :13:02.chance because he has a good record. It was the right decision he made.
:13:03. > :13:07.Absolutely right. We saw with Donald Young, he was intimidated. Let's
:13:08. > :13:12.talk about James and his gutsiness. He showed that in Russia. He was on
:13:13. > :13:18.court for seven hours for his two singles. He played superbly in
:13:19. > :13:22.Coventry. 32 aces in this match against the player who is now, six
:13:23. > :13:28.months later, the top 30 of the world. A fantastic win forward Ward.
:13:29. > :13:33.Had some big wins in the past and really led the team. Smith, without
:13:34. > :13:37.Andy Murray, so fantastic Davis Cup player award. Really raised his game
:13:38. > :13:42.well. Has so much passion for the sport when it comes to the Davis
:13:43. > :13:46.Cup. He was going to come to actually Miami to train with us. He
:13:47. > :13:51.went to Australia to prepare for the Australian Open. Put in a good
:13:52. > :13:58.preseason - playing well again. And the match-ups, as John said, works
:13:59. > :14:03.well. Strong backhand likes to play players like Querrey. The match-ups
:14:04. > :14:07.are key. A great decision and helped a lot for Smith, once Isner pulled
:14:08. > :14:11.out. It is interesting, you talk about the fitness level and how he
:14:12. > :14:18.is working harder because the likes of Murray - all of them, Nadal, they
:14:19. > :14:21.set such a high bar of fitness getting through five sets. Seven
:14:22. > :14:26.hours on court. He had to go to hospital. He was on a drip for a few
:14:27. > :14:31.hours because he was giving so much. Well, he really works hard in the
:14:32. > :14:38.Davis Cup. When Andy Murray is in the Davis Cup matches, when someone
:14:39. > :14:40.like Ward and Edmund, see the professionalism that Andy Murray
:14:41. > :14:45.brings to the tame r table and his fitness -- to the table and his
:14:46. > :14:49.fitness levels, James Ward, he is young enough, he has to realise you
:14:50. > :14:54.keep it up to the height if you want to get into that top 100. The Davis
:14:55. > :14:59.Cup has always been that springboard for him to do well afterwards. If he
:15:00. > :15:04.can win this or the tie, can you imagine what it would do for his
:15:05. > :15:08.confidence? The relationship between Murray and Ward has been good. Now
:15:09. > :15:12.they are close and practicing together, spending time together,
:15:13. > :15:17.inviting him to come to Miami to train. It is blossoming in terms of
:15:18. > :15:22.him trying to help him. It is rubbing off on James. James is
:15:23. > :15:26.training hard. He is working hard, playing his best tennis of his life.
:15:27. > :15:30.He had a tough match, but playing better. It is because he's strong.
:15:31. > :15:35.He is working a new coach in Australia. It is looking good for
:15:36. > :15:40.James. To put it into a Davis Cup situation, we will see shortly.
:15:41. > :15:44.Hopefully it will proof to be success -- prove to be successful
:15:45. > :15:48.for GB. Can he continue it for the other parts of the year? Maybe he
:15:49. > :15:53.has to look at this Davis Cup as being in the World Cup and he was
:15:54. > :15:58.helping Great Britain get there. This is a huge step for him if he
:15:59. > :16:02.can get on Andy Murray's coat-tails to take himself up with the
:16:03. > :16:07.publicity and being out in big-court situations. Absolutely. James over
:16:08. > :16:11.the years he's been sort of strange in the way he likes to practise. He
:16:12. > :16:15.likes to do it a certain way. He wasn't a great listener with
:16:16. > :16:19.coaches. When you have Andy Murray in the Davis Cup, I think that will
:16:20. > :16:23.rub off. You have got to be open to different things. You have got to
:16:24. > :16:29.change your game. You cannot just do one way of training. With Ward, he
:16:30. > :16:33.needs to do something different, be more versatile to go up the ladder.
:16:34. > :16:37.He can do it though. He has done it as far as beating Sam Querrey. He
:16:38. > :16:43.did it at Queens a few years ago. Not on the main court, on the
:16:44. > :16:49.outside court, but boy, 6-4 in the third. A big server and that is a
:16:50. > :16:53.scalp because Sam had won the tournament at Queens. A couple over
:16:54. > :16:58.big players. Big serves and well James is on court against Sam again.
:16:59. > :17:02.Let's hear his thoughts on the Davis Cup.
:17:03. > :17:07.You played a lot of Davis Cup in ties in the past when you have not
:17:08. > :17:12.played in such glamorous surroundings r, how is it for you to
:17:13. > :17:16.be in the competition for real? Everyone has worked here so hard. I
:17:17. > :17:21.have been here since Leon started, back in Eastbourne, where it was not
:17:22. > :17:24.so glamorous a venue. We have worked hard for four years. It will be nice
:17:25. > :17:28.to get the rewards for the hard work we have gone through in the last few
:17:29. > :17:32.years. You know, it doesn't matter where it happened or whatever -
:17:33. > :17:36.having a win against a player you come in with a psychological
:17:37. > :17:40.advantage, don't you? We said that with Young against Murray. He would
:17:41. > :17:44.have been feeling better. It is different when you play against Andy
:17:45. > :17:48.Murray. In this situation Ward will feel confident. He will think,
:17:49. > :17:53.strong memories, her has beaten good players, the match-up works well.
:17:54. > :17:57.There is a clear game style in which Leon Smith would put forward.
:17:58. > :18:01.They do video analysis. It is something I was involved in during
:18:02. > :18:06.the last two ties. You see footage of what has been success until the
:18:07. > :18:13.past. You reminisce about it. Ward will have that in his mind and he
:18:14. > :18:17.will be ready to play. It will feel good going out there and following
:18:18. > :18:21.Andy Murray after that great win he's just had. He will feel
:18:22. > :18:24.confident. Leon Smith will be relaxed. They are good together on
:18:25. > :18:28.the court. They feel very confident. It will be interesting seeing that
:18:29. > :18:34.and the players are on court. The captain is giving them their pep
:18:35. > :18:39.talk. Querrey against Ward. Let's face it, Querrey is not known as a
:18:40. > :18:43.clay court specialist, is he? He's another one of these that there's
:18:44. > :18:46.more expected of him which has come out. He's had the weapons in his
:18:47. > :18:51.game. He is not very good defensively. Mentally he goes in
:18:52. > :18:55.dips in matches. He has been disappointing. In the States they
:18:56. > :19:01.thought he would be a top-ten player. It has not worked out that
:19:02. > :19:06.way. He is still young. Perhaps it will help him if he can play well.
:19:07. > :19:10.He is one-dimensional at times. Also, just looking at the betting
:19:11. > :19:15.for this - it is 7-1 on for Querrey to win. 4-1, James Ward. I think
:19:16. > :19:23.James has a better chance than that. . I do too. It is 30% chance. I
:19:24. > :19:26.think he has a good chance. Who knows out here - on the clay,
:19:27. > :19:32.following Andy Murray, feeling good. I think he's got a good shot here.
:19:33. > :19:36.Yes, the pressure is off him. That will help James. He is feeling good.
:19:37. > :19:42.His form is good. He is moving well. He will be wanting to go out there,
:19:43. > :19:49.to prove a point. You cannot underestimate how big a boost it was
:19:50. > :19:53.to get selected over him. For James to get the nod from the captain,
:19:54. > :19:58.like, you are my number two player, go out and prove to me why I
:19:59. > :20:03.selected you. Querrey, the number one now, as the American, ranked 49
:20:04. > :20:07.in the world. It is unbelievable! It is amazing.
:20:08. > :20:12.We talk about him in Britain and we have had that argument for years and
:20:13. > :20:18.obviously Andy Murray came along N the States, they are crucifying the
:20:19. > :20:23.people about why the American tennis is so bad in comparison to what it
:20:24. > :20:27.used to be. I know Patrick McEnroe is in charge of the programme. They
:20:28. > :20:32.are getting a lot of scrutiny at the moment. It is not good enough for a
:20:33. > :20:37.nation that big and with tennis that popular that they are not producing
:20:38. > :20:46.at the moment. A great Davis Cup record there. Out of his seven
:20:47. > :20:52.appearance appearances, won eight, lost five. Wins are wins, aren't
:20:53. > :20:56.they? Wins are wins. You cannot underestimate the value. It is huge
:20:57. > :21:01.to know you are going out there - the nerves - you deal with the
:21:02. > :21:05.pressure well. You are either a good Davis Cup player or you struggle.
:21:06. > :21:10.You get labelled and rightly so, because it is a special art. John
:21:11. > :21:14.knows as well as anyone, what it the like to go out there and play for
:21:15. > :21:18.your country and play these big matches whether in Lithuania, Egypt
:21:19. > :21:24.and now against America. It all comes under the same bracket -
:21:25. > :21:29.daifts cup, wearing GB on your back and trying to put a point on for the
:21:30. > :21:33.team. He loves to have a voice in his ear in the corner, in the
:21:34. > :21:40.changeover and he will relish this chance today to take on a better
:21:41. > :21:43.opponent. Jim Courier - this will be a must-win match for him and the
:21:44. > :21:48.United States. When we heard from Leon Smith talking about the
:21:49. > :21:52.practise sessions, kiel and James had a -- Kyle and James had a match
:21:53. > :21:56.against each other. He said James has been playing incredibly well in
:21:57. > :22:02.practise. That is important in a build-up to a match. No question!
:22:03. > :22:07.He'll be encouraged by his record. James Ward has won his matches in a
:22:08. > :22:12.lower division. He had a great win last year against Russia. You can
:22:13. > :22:17.not do more than that. He has won eight out of 13 singles. He's more
:22:18. > :22:22.experienced in Davis Cup than Sam Querrey. OK, he has played in the
:22:23. > :22:26.World Cup. The Davis Cup, there is something special, you either play
:22:27. > :22:31.well or you don't. Sam Querrey has got a losing record in Davis Cup. He
:22:32. > :22:36.has obviously gone up against better players. They are still losses and
:22:37. > :22:42.psychologically that is big. It is unfair asking you this, you want to
:22:43. > :22:46.get back in the team, but as a captain, his record is amazing.
:22:47. > :22:49.Seven wins, one loss. No-one knew, other than he was involved with Andy
:22:50. > :22:55.early on, what his background was and what he could deliver. He's done
:22:56. > :22:59.superbly. One thing he's been adamant is team atmosphere. It is
:23:00. > :23:03.preparation. It is build a team bond, a unity. Right back at the
:23:04. > :23:09.start of his first match, before the first tie that he was in charge of,
:23:10. > :23:13.he put a montage together of the vision, of what he wanted. He didn't
:23:14. > :23:17.put a time limit. It is a vision for the team. It was to get back to the
:23:18. > :23:21.world group. We were in Division Three. A poor division. We suffer
:23:22. > :23:25.some tough matches. Yes, we lost some matches we probably should
:23:26. > :23:35.have. It was tough and we had to get back up there. We had to accept
:23:36. > :23:42.where we were. We built it up. Now, they have done some great wins. This
:23:43. > :23:46.tie, against the States, this is a mouth-watering tie. It is one
:23:47. > :23:53.everyone has looked forward to since we beat Croatia in September.
:23:54. > :23:56.Everyone love loves it - it has an incredible history. When we talk
:23:57. > :24:01.about Leon Smith and I think we will see a different Leon Smith here
:24:02. > :24:06.because James Ward relies on him and so different from any other tennis
:24:07. > :24:13.match that you play, to be able to talk to. He knows Andy so well. Leon
:24:14. > :24:18.and James go back a long way on the courts and they know each other very
:24:19. > :24:23.well. He knows what to say. He will help him a big way today. James will
:24:24. > :24:26.play well. I am looking forward to this match. They are starting. If
:24:27. > :24:33.you want to get in touch, you can. There are many ways, I have ya our
:24:34. > :24:36.website. That is the address: You can hashtag us or via the Facebook
:24:37. > :24:50.page as well. Here we go. The second match,
:24:51. > :24:55.Querrey against Ward. Let's re rejoin John and Jonathan.
:24:56. > :25:23.Sam Querrey, been as high as 17 in the world.
:25:24. > :25:34.A big power game based around that serve and forehand combination.
:25:35. > :25:38.James Ward may be down as 175 on the list. E-I can tell you, he is qui --
:25:39. > :27:20.I can tell you, he is quietly confident ahead of this.
:27:21. > :27:25.There's going to be no doubt about his tactic today, target that Sam
:27:26. > :27:52.Querrey backhand. Ward po sezs a solid -- possesses a
:27:53. > :28:30.solid backhand himself. That is a point constructed on the
:28:31. > :28:37.tactics board. He'll be happy if, James Ward will be happy if he
:28:38. > :28:49.targets it to cross the court. He'll like that pattern.
:28:50. > :29:02.He does possess some cheap points, as does James Ward.
:29:03. > :29:10.He does have big first serves. . I can't help thinking, watching
:29:11. > :29:20.the crowd here, Ross, about what a mistake this was for the Us to put
:29:21. > :29:25.this venue on here. Normally the atmosphere is unbelievable, it helps
:29:26. > :29:29.the home support, but it me it feels like there is nothing going on out
:29:30. > :29:33.there. Such a small crowd. It is like they are too far from the
:29:34. > :29:38.court. And there is very little atmosphere for a Davis Cup match. It
:29:39. > :29:43.is a big mistake the venue that they have chosen. Nice to look at and San
:29:44. > :29:47.Diego is a lovely city but not a great place for a passionate
:29:48. > :29:53.audience. That is one of the big advantages for a home match.
:29:54. > :29:56.I am in disbelief, John. I can't belief they anticipated that they
:29:57. > :30:01.are going to get, clearly with the amount of seats in the stadium, it
:30:02. > :30:05.is up to 8,000 but they have a couple of thousand and. And it looks
:30:06. > :30:15.empty. And that is before the Super Bowl.
:30:16. > :30:19.When you are first drawn as a home tie, you think of the surface, what
:30:20. > :30:24.is beneficial for the team and where can the crowds fill the stadium,
:30:25. > :30:29.where to get the best support? Clearly they have missed a trick
:30:30. > :30:48.here. It is about a quarter full. If that.
:30:49. > :30:57.A little nervus, maybe, James Ward. A bit of a breeze out there as well.
:30:58. > :31:29.-- nervous. Ward, quite like Andy Murray, he
:31:30. > :31:33.will want to extend the rallies against Querrey. He is a big-hitting
:31:34. > :31:38.player. He relies on the serve, as we witnessed in the last game, but
:31:39. > :31:50.Ward will like to extend the rallies, 10, 15 shots, use his
:31:51. > :31:56.experience on the clay. That was a bad mistake there. He
:31:57. > :32:18.pulled off that forehand. It did not look comfortable.
:32:19. > :32:29.A good serve. He trained for a couple of years at the academy at
:32:30. > :32:35.value -- Valencia. You need good work ethic to impress the pan yards!
:32:36. > :33:03.-- Spaniards. It's going to be a long afternoon
:33:04. > :33:09.for James Ward, if he cannot win the exchange of back hndz. It is Ward's
:33:10. > :33:19.strength and Querrey's relative weakness.
:33:20. > :33:27.A terrific performance in the Davis Cup last year for Ward war. In
:33:28. > :33:30.Coventry, Britain beat Russia. An amazing comeback win. From 2 down on
:33:31. > :33:56.the tie. Interestingly, Ross, he shares
:33:57. > :34:01.coaches with the Russian he played and beat there. .
:34:02. > :34:07.Yes, he is a wild one. He trains hard, but he is a bit wacky, a bit
:34:08. > :34:12.crazy. James finds him funny, but ultimately they train hard together.
:34:13. > :34:52.It has helped James to get in good shape.
:34:53. > :34:59.His feet have not settled. I agree. He is a little bit tight.
:35:00. > :35:16.That is the beauty of Davis Cup. It is the best of five.
:35:17. > :35:23.Well, Querrey is in control in the early stages.
:35:24. > :35:29.P-0 with a break. Seven career titles to his name. Including on the
:35:30. > :35:35.clay in Belgrade, Serbia, in 2010. That year he won tournaments on all
:35:36. > :35:41.four surfaces. Belgrade on the clay, he won Queen's that year on the
:35:42. > :35:47.grass. Memphis Indoors and Los Angeles on the outdoor hard.
:35:48. > :35:50.And he beat Andy Murray in Los Angeles. Another Goodwin there for
:35:51. > :35:56.Querrey. This year, though, only the second
:35:57. > :36:02.round in Brisbane. The first round in Sydney.
:36:03. > :36:12.He lost to Albert Ramos. And in the third round, he beat Gulbis in the
:36:13. > :36:20.second round. A decent scalp. He lost to Fognini in the third round.
:36:21. > :36:25.There is a big Gulf in the class really on paper, I think? There is.
:36:26. > :36:30.And experience on the big, big level. On the tour event level, but
:36:31. > :36:36.not so much in the Davis Cup. There is a big Gulf in class, but the
:36:37. > :36:40.match-ups work well for Ward. He should take confidence going into
:36:41. > :36:44.the match, but ultimately they have played two different careers and
:36:45. > :36:55.schedules for the last five years. Querrey will feel like there is more
:36:56. > :36:58.from him to come. That's a very simple way that Ward
:36:59. > :37:08.can start to work his way back into the match. Using that effective 1-2
:37:09. > :37:33.punch. Served out wide on the 45 degree
:37:34. > :37:37.angle on the backhand cross-court. That's the example of not really
:37:38. > :37:41.getting his feet right. It was not that difficult a shot. It looked
:37:42. > :37:56.like he was late getting down to the ball.
:37:57. > :38:03.As we said with Donald Young, when he was struggling in the opening
:38:04. > :38:08.sets. Go back to the basics. Do what you know well. Use your serves and
:38:09. > :38:11.strengths. Don't go for the risky shots. Try to play yourself into the
:38:12. > :39:15.court. Way too many unforced errors at the
:39:16. > :39:20.moment from James Ward. He has to settle here.
:39:21. > :39:24.Querrey has put a lot of balls in but not really done too much that is
:39:25. > :39:49.so special so far. Overall, I think, it is a long way
:39:50. > :40:02.to go. John Blonde is the second umpire of
:40:03. > :40:04.the match. That was a good overall. Break point again for the United
:40:05. > :40:32.States. It is almost a carbon copy of the
:40:33. > :40:37.opening match. One player settling, doing the basics, using their
:40:38. > :40:44.experience. The other player struggling. With a lot of
:40:45. > :40:48.uncharacteristic errors. Yes, some of the backhands not even
:40:49. > :40:54.making the top of the net. That is unusual. He is flat on the ground
:40:55. > :40:56.Stokes, James Ward but normally more consistent than this. He is in the
:40:57. > :41:23.moment, he is feeling the pressure. I also think that Ward should slow
:41:24. > :41:29.it down between the points. Querrey is a quick player. Ward is missing a
:41:30. > :41:34.ball, then going to the next point. He needs to slow it up a little bit.
:41:35. > :41:59.He needs to do something to stop this momentum.
:42:00. > :42:05.That's the problem when you play Sam Querrey. When you are behind in a
:42:06. > :42:11.set it is very hard to get back into it. He has the availability to hold
:42:12. > :42:16.the serve so comfortably. He has proved that. 5-0.
:42:17. > :42:21.It is almost like a hard court match. He has taken the ball on.
:42:22. > :42:25.Short rallies. Dominating with the serve and backing it up.
:42:26. > :42:30.Unfortunately James Ward at the moment, has not got his teeth into
:42:31. > :42:35.it. He is not forcing him back. He is not getting enough balls back to
:42:36. > :42:38.worry him. It is quick-fire tennis. One is on fire, the other is
:42:39. > :42:41.certainly not. The tactics before the match from
:42:42. > :42:47.the captain would have been Serb well, James. Rally with the
:42:48. > :42:54.backhand. Play tight tennis. Play intense, no errors. Put your tactics
:42:55. > :43:00.forward but he has not. He has made a lot of errors on the backhand.
:43:01. > :43:09.That is a recipe for disaster to open up the match.
:43:10. > :43:14.There an aerial view of the Petco Park in San Diego. We said at the
:43:15. > :43:20.start we hoped it would fill up, but it does not look like that is going
:43:21. > :43:25.to be the case. It is an all-round disappoint, you would think for the
:43:26. > :43:30.US Tennis Association. Now a lot of you are getting in touch with us.
:43:31. > :43:41.Tweets coming in, talking about the empty stadium. The choice of it.
:43:42. > :43:49.The thing is, guys, you don't ever feel if this match got close, say,
:43:50. > :43:53.on Sunday, that there would be a jumping atmosphere. We are seeing
:43:54. > :43:57.empty seats but the people in the seats, they are looking like they
:43:58. > :44:03.are settling in for the week. That's right! They are not jumping
:44:04. > :44:10.around. The crowd can't take part in these
:44:11. > :44:17.matches when it is tight. I remember last year, at Del Ray Beach. They
:44:18. > :44:22.are the Williams sisters, there were 2,000 people there in a 4,000
:44:23. > :44:29.stadium with Venus and Serena Williams playing. I don't understand
:44:30. > :44:35.how they can't get it organised to be filled up. It is mind-boggling.
:44:36. > :44:47.This has not been a good venue choice, crowdwise. The atmosphere is
:44:48. > :44:51.not there at the moment. The confusing thing if you go to a
:44:52. > :44:57.stadium, be it a football stadium in Europe or a baseball stadium in the
:44:58. > :45:03.States, that would be for the final. 25,000? This is like an indoor
:45:04. > :45:10.arena-size set-up. So why aren't they indoors in an arena? The match
:45:11. > :45:18.against Serbia in autoyen. It was a huge stadium. Packed. A roaring
:45:19. > :45:23.crowd. It is the complete opposite. And Andy Murray is a big draw card.
:45:24. > :45:28.There is no reason, if they picked the venue right, it should have been
:45:29. > :45:34.full. At the moment it is just not at the
:45:35. > :45:41.races with James Ward. This is a set to forget.
:45:42. > :45:45.This is where Leon Smith has to do his work at the end of this set and
:45:46. > :46:42.re-set here. At least let the guy serve it out.
:46:43. > :46:48.They don't like bagel sets. Well, not when you are losing, they don't.
:46:49. > :46:53.Well done. Finally, on the board. One thing we know about James Ward,
:46:54. > :46:58.is he is self-confident. He believes in himself. He knows his ability.
:46:59. > :47:02.Knows when he is playing well. He can match it with anyone. So I don't
:47:03. > :47:08.think he will be too concerned, even if this set is a 6-1 set. There is
:47:09. > :47:24.the big man, John Isner. He would love to be out there playing.
:47:25. > :47:28.He is watching his closest friend. They often double as doubles
:47:29. > :48:08.partners. To me, his serve is in the top five
:48:09. > :48:12.serves of all time. With good ground strokes as well.
:48:13. > :48:38.There is no reason why he should not be in the top ten regularly with his
:48:39. > :48:43.game. When you have poked out wide like
:48:44. > :48:47.that, you have to get yourself back across court. This was a wrong shot
:48:48. > :49:08.selection therement he has given himself way too much court to cover
:49:09. > :49:12.on the next ball. Next ball.
:49:13. > :49:22.He an appropriate shot in the baseball stadium! It was a bad
:49:23. > :49:33.bounce but Ward's footwork did not move back off the baseline. You will
:49:34. > :49:37.get a bad bouncer on the foot mshgs -- foot marks.
:49:38. > :49:48.25 minutes and it is set point for Sam Querrey of the United States.
:49:49. > :49:53.The first opportunity for the locals to get behind their side. Having won
:49:54. > :50:01.a set for the first time this weekend.
:50:02. > :50:08.The tie going to form. Going to expectations, but I think it is fair
:50:09. > :50:11.to say that James Ward can play a lot better than he did there in that
:50:12. > :50:17.opening set. No question about it. You would have
:50:18. > :50:21.thought after Murray, going 1-0 up in a match, that he would have gone
:50:22. > :50:25.out here and exploded on to the scene and Sam Querrey would have
:50:26. > :50:29.been the one that would be tight. He knows if he loses this match it is
:50:30. > :50:34.all over, but the reverse has happened. James Ward has not settled
:50:35. > :50:39.yet, but there is a long way to go. The best of three sets, you would be
:50:40. > :50:45.panicking but the best of five, there is a long way to dig in.
:50:46. > :50:50.Ward will start afresh, but there is an element for Ward, he has
:50:51. > :51:02.practised well, he is feeling strong, but you cannot icate won and
:51:03. > :51:08.he has only won one match. It sometimes takes time to get that
:51:09. > :51:12.feeling back for winning matches. You cannot beat that.
:51:13. > :51:18.He looks at the moment as a player not willing to construct the point.
:51:19. > :51:22.Almost hitting the cover off the balls, not feeling confident to dig
:51:23. > :51:28.six or seven balls into the court to win the rally, but he has to change
:51:29. > :51:34.that quickly. Sam Querrey is a confidence type of player. When he
:51:35. > :51:38.starts swinging from the hip, he is dangerous. They are making sure that
:51:39. > :51:43.the court does not get dry. It was pretty wet at the beginning of the
:51:44. > :51:49.set. I'm not sure it needs more. It was only wet 25 minutes ago, they
:51:50. > :51:52.are covering it again with excess water.
:51:53. > :51:56.And to talk about the atmosphere one more time, I think tomorrow we will
:51:57. > :52:01.see a different atmosphere. I'm not saying that the crowd will be
:52:02. > :52:08.better, I don't know the ticket sales but the Bryans are very good
:52:09. > :52:12.at getting the crowd going. If anybody can do it, they may jazz
:52:13. > :52:22.people up. Sam Querrey is a very good player but he does not get the
:52:23. > :52:27.crowds going. He is pretty monotone out there.
:52:28. > :52:35.Is that an understatement? Well, the Bryan brothers, you are able to see
:52:36. > :52:43.that match at 8.00pm on BBC Three in the evening.
:52:44. > :52:49.The Bryan brothers up against Colin Fleming and maybe Andy Murray.
:52:50. > :52:57.There are many pushing for the doubles slot. I think, Ross, that
:52:58. > :53:01.Andy said they would discuss it with the team about the doubles tomorrow,
:53:02. > :53:05.but I think that the only scenario now that he would not play, unless
:53:06. > :53:10.there was injury, that we don't know about that happened in that much, is
:53:11. > :53:15.if James Ward happens to win the match and we end up 2-0, perhaps
:53:16. > :53:18.then Andy may think about resting, but other than that I think he will
:53:19. > :53:24.play. I do. That is what he implied in the
:53:25. > :53:28.press conference. Unless James wins, otherwise it will be a team
:53:29. > :53:33.decision, but I don't think it will be. I think it is Andy saying he is
:53:34. > :53:39.playing. That he is good to go! But a tough call for Colin Fleming. And
:53:40. > :53:43.who knows what will happen in the morning, but Colin Fleming's name is
:53:44. > :53:51.down there. He has a great record in the Davis Cup doubles. I am pleased
:53:52. > :53:55.to see he has been given another opportunity. Now with a chance to
:53:56. > :53:59.play against the best team in the world.
:54:00. > :54:04.They may be but they are beatable. Last year in Davis Cup they lost
:54:05. > :54:08.unexpectedly in the fifth set against Serbia.
:54:09. > :54:20.So, if Andy Murray and Colin Fleming play together... Well, yes, what
:54:21. > :54:31.chance do you put that at? I would say 55/45, Bryans. Very close.
:54:32. > :54:35.They have won a Davis Cup match and lost one together.
:54:36. > :54:39.Colin is a very good player but loves playing with someone who is
:54:40. > :54:49.stronger than him. With a big personality, who is going to be good
:54:50. > :55:00.for him to food off. Andy knows he is a good doubles
:55:01. > :55:07.player. He wants that one. It is in his mindset. Hopefully he
:55:08. > :55:14.will be there. Set two with new balls.
:55:15. > :55:19.This is not just the errors. It is where they are ending up. That
:55:20. > :55:23.forehand was in the middle of the net.
:55:24. > :55:27.Leon Smith I would have thought would be saying give it height. Give
:55:28. > :55:35.it spin. Take the net out of the play.
:55:36. > :55:39.It is different to the opening match.
:55:40. > :56:52.If Ward can get his teeth stuck into the match, it is not a foregone
:56:53. > :57:00.conclusion. Mush
:57:01. > :57:08.Much better from Ward. Good to see him getting stuck in. He needs to
:57:09. > :57:13.change momentum. He needs to get vocal out there.
:57:14. > :57:20.This is huge. He needed that one badly.
:57:21. > :57:23.To me it almost looked like James Ward, when you played the top ten
:57:24. > :57:28.players and you are ranked lower, the sense is when you are on court
:57:29. > :57:32.you have to come out of your comfort zone from the beginning to have a
:57:33. > :57:36.chance. You feel that, but against Sam Querrey, I don't think he has to
:57:37. > :57:41.go outside of his comfort zone that much, but it is like he feels he has
:57:42. > :57:47.to. That is why he was going for every ball. Trying to hit the cover
:57:48. > :57:52.off each shot. He does not need to do that. Querrey is a good player
:57:53. > :57:56.but not a great player. You are spot on, John. I agree
:57:57. > :58:10.completely. Bad luck. That is a better point. A
:58:11. > :58:16.much better backhand. Deep. He does like the drop-shot, James Ward. He
:58:17. > :58:20.almost got away with this one. Not a bad one. Sam Querrey did well to
:58:21. > :59:12.flick that ball that hard from this position.
:59:13. > :59:17.Sometimes hard and fast down the centre can be a good ploy against
:59:18. > :59:31.Querrey. He needs to find some consistency
:59:32. > :59:36.though. He's got to do the business on his serve. At least hold to get
:59:37. > :59:41.into the business side of the set and not get blown away and go down
:59:42. > :59:47.an early break. He's going to really focus on getting a lot more first
:59:48. > :59:55.serves in. At least keeping his nose out in front in this set.
:59:56. > :00:38.Give your opponent a chance to get nervous at three or four-all.
:00:39. > :00:45.The best of the match so far. He's getting height on the ball now
:00:46. > :02:56.with the ground strokes. He's not hitting it so flat.
:02:57. > :03:07.Ward knows the importance of that service hold.
:03:08. > :03:17.Very entertaining brass band strike up what sounds like the Sports Night
:03:18. > :03:22.theme from the 1980s. You wouldn't want to be sitting next
:03:23. > :03:28.to them, would you? Makes a good atmosphere, I suppose. They have to
:03:29. > :03:36.find one from somewhere. Word word did well to have a toilet
:03:37. > :03:40.break and get his mind sorted. He's a different player than in the first
:03:41. > :03:43.half an hour. Making his opponent work for the point. It was
:03:44. > :03:50.surprising for Querrey also the way that Ward played in that opening
:03:51. > :03:53.set. Good to see the Brit playing more consistent, playing smarter,
:03:54. > :03:59.realising who he is and where he's playing. It is what you said. Not
:04:00. > :04:04.having to do too much. We see it so often, if Kyle Edmund had played in
:04:05. > :04:10.this match, he had not beaten higher-ranked opponents. Ward has in
:04:11. > :04:16.the past. He's won daifts cup matches there's no -- Davis Cup
:04:17. > :04:18.matches. There's no need... The future of American tennis is looking
:04:19. > :04:30.bright. Cannot help by think if this was in
:04:31. > :04:33.the UK, it would be indoors, in one of our big arenas and there would be
:04:34. > :04:54.families everywhere. Maybe we should have Davis Cup
:04:55. > :04:56.replays. There 's a lot of talk about changing the format, but I
:04:57. > :05:31.have never heard that one, Jonathan. In the Davis Cup you play a team,
:05:32. > :05:39.here in San Diego. Next time the UK get p drawn against the State -- -
:05:40. > :05:45.the UK get drawn against the States it will be played in the UK.
:05:46. > :05:50.The meeting of this side the last time 1999 - a famous match in
:05:51. > :05:56.Birmingham. Jim Courier inspired the United
:05:57. > :06:05.States, edging home against Henman and Rudd.
:06:06. > :06:11.-- Rudeski. John Lloyd here, trying to restrain
:06:12. > :06:16.your brother, who was the captain, wearing his pork pie hat, if I
:06:17. > :06:23.remember correctly. Yes, a bit embarrassing, but... Big serving
:06:24. > :06:39.from Sam Querrey at the end of that game. 2-2. John often when two
:06:40. > :06:45.single players play, why did Henman and Rudeski not have more success?
:06:46. > :06:49.It was one of those things. Close there to doing very well on a couple
:06:50. > :06:55.of occasions, but didn't quite get the result thats - I thought with
:06:56. > :07:01.how they were play -- the results. I thought with how they played we had
:07:02. > :07:06.a chance. I think they lost one match to Austria in the doubles. I
:07:07. > :07:08.am not exactly sure - there were a lot of double matches which they
:07:09. > :08:12.won. Nicely done from the American. Good
:08:13. > :09:04.field. On this occasion... He didn't really go after that one.
:09:05. > :09:09.He just lunged at it on that forehand. He didn't move his feet to
:09:10. > :09:13.the ball properly. A lot of errors from the British
:09:14. > :09:55.man. Querrey needed to hoist that one
:09:56. > :10:20.back deeper and get some height on the ball.
:10:21. > :10:29.A huge roar from Ward. Closing out that game 3-2. Getting all the
:10:30. > :10:33.support he needs from the bench. No doubt about that, that will continue
:10:34. > :10:39.all day. The likes of Fleming and Edmund, the
:10:40. > :10:47.young youngster, we got a glimpse of there.
:10:48. > :10:54.If Edmund fulfils his early potential, there's an exciting
:10:55. > :11:00.line-up of the future. Andy and Kyle in the singles with the back-up of
:11:01. > :11:04.Ward and players not even here, Dan Evans, who has played a number of
:11:05. > :11:13.ties over the past couple of years, not selected this time.
:11:14. > :11:18.And our embarrassment of riches in doubles. Ross, talk a bit about your
:11:19. > :11:22.recovery - it is great to see you back on the court after everything
:11:23. > :11:26.you went through last year. A couple of tournaments in, how are you
:11:27. > :11:31.feeling? I feel good. I really enjoyed the trip to Australia. Back
:11:32. > :11:37.playing with Colin Fleming and did a good preseason in Miami and Spain.
:11:38. > :11:41.Made sure I got some good training. That is when I felt I was back to
:11:42. > :11:46.full health, when I was able to mix with players like Andy in the gym
:11:47. > :11:51.and on the court. The results were a bit disappointing in Australia. As I
:11:52. > :11:55.say, over the course of three-set matches, one good set, one bad set
:11:56. > :11:57.and one average set. It will come. I need to be patient, keep training
:11:58. > :12:09.hard and look forward to the future. Looking at that cap caption, at the
:12:10. > :12:35.number of Davis Cup titles. Lovely drop shot from Ward. Was
:12:36. > :12:40.pondering for all our troubles, there is America and Australia with
:12:41. > :12:45.all the cups and all the glories from decades. We are all in the same
:12:46. > :12:50.state, aren't we, the Grand Slam nations, in terms of player
:12:51. > :12:55.development, apart from France, who have their production line. We have
:12:56. > :13:01.a chat with the French when we go to the tournaments and that I say we
:13:02. > :13:06.would love to have a Grand Slam player like you have got and we say,
:13:07. > :13:19.we would love to have 50 player inside the top 100.
:13:20. > :13:28.That was a lovely backhand from Querrey.
:13:29. > :13:34.As we see with the sun beaming down, the court seems like it is playing a
:13:35. > :13:41.bit quicker. Bigger serves, shorter rallies. There's definite
:13:42. > :13:57.definitely... Well played. Brilliant from him. So
:13:58. > :14:05.often things can change in matches. Did well to stay in this rally.
:14:06. > :14:09.There was one moment it just looked like his feet were going to get
:14:10. > :14:18.stuck in the clay. Easy to get across for that volley.
:14:19. > :14:22.Getting a lot of points on that serve. It is not easy to play
:14:23. > :14:25.against when he's serving. Two or three points a game at the moment.
:14:26. > :14:29.Could change his stance, his position. It must be 90% of points
:14:30. > :15:42.behind his first serve. Terrific forehand.
:15:43. > :16:26.Pressure on the Ward serve now. He missed it! I was just wondering,
:16:27. > :16:32.where is the sun as well! It was behind him, the sun, so no excuse
:16:33. > :16:43.there. This one, he makes - 99 times out of 100.
:16:44. > :17:07.That is a shocker! Takes him 0-40 down in the game.
:17:08. > :18:34.Now we have Querrey serving. Not giving any cheap points.
:18:35. > :18:44.It looked out. I thought it with was out too. Considering three points
:18:45. > :18:51.have followed that horrendous smash, it has been a decent recovery from
:18:52. > :19:02.Ward. That was wide. There could be a huge
:19:03. > :19:27.haul here forward ward. That would be fantastic for him.
:19:28. > :19:33.He's played smart. He's kept the ball in court. He has not given
:19:34. > :19:54.Querrey any real opportunities to seize control of the rallies.
:19:55. > :20:02.Really well down. Five shots in a row.
:20:03. > :20:10.Well done James Ward. You did well there! He hung in there. He's given
:20:11. > :20:17.Sam Querrey a chance to get a bit tired. After losing that game, which
:20:18. > :20:23.he should have won, they just may be the serve rhythm. He cannot keep
:20:24. > :20:30.serving like this. Or maybe he can! Back to his chair so Jim Courier can
:20:31. > :20:34.tell him about another of his Grand Slam titles back in the day. We are
:20:35. > :20:41.here all weekend for coverage of this tie, being played in San Diego,
:20:42. > :20:46.California, inside the baseball stadium.
:20:47. > :20:51.Tonight, over on BBC One, just a plug for the deadline day programme
:20:52. > :20:56.with Dan Walker and guests. That starts at 11. 25pm. Lots of
:20:57. > :21:00.last-minute activity around the country.
:21:01. > :21:06.And, if you need to do other thing during the weekend, you can listen
:21:07. > :21:13.to this tie as well on 5 Live sports extra.
:21:14. > :21:20.Right, James Ward, can you use that turn around in the game to your
:21:21. > :21:22.advantage? This is potentially a big moment in the tie, with Querrey
:21:23. > :22:20.serving at 3-4. Brilliant play. Building pressure on
:22:21. > :23:28.the Querrey serve. Just get the ball back in court.
:23:29. > :24:24.A good serve. Ward was on to that one.
:24:25. > :24:32.A good eye these umpires on clay. You need to work out which mark you
:24:33. > :25:37.are looking at. Sometimes that is where the controversy comes.
:25:38. > :25:50.So far Ward has played his service shots more carefully, taking more
:25:51. > :26:03.care with his shots, making every single one count.
:26:04. > :26:11.That's the play, that if he can frequently score with could give
:26:12. > :26:17.Ward hope here. Does not defend well, Querrey, someone who has had
:26:18. > :26:30.as high ranking as he has. That is his weakness there.
:26:31. > :27:07.Their defensive play is unbelievable.
:27:08. > :27:18.That is his best game of the match. What a time to do it!
:27:19. > :27:24.He will drum his ear drums, saying make your opponent work for this
:27:25. > :27:30.game. In five minutes' time you could be
:27:31. > :27:33.sitting at a set-all. Have you forgotten what happened in the first
:27:34. > :27:38.25 minutes? We have to give him credit because he's made a good
:27:39. > :27:42.comeback. It could have gone away quickly there. The way he started
:27:43. > :27:49.the first set was not good at all. He was looking rattled. He has cut
:27:50. > :27:52.his unforced errors down dramatically from what it was. The
:27:53. > :27:54.majority came in the first set, where they were just all over the
:27:55. > :28:06.place. For tomorrow someone should let the
:28:07. > :28:11.US director know that not everyone in the world has commercial breaks
:28:12. > :28:19.at changeovers. Clearly that is what they think.
:28:20. > :28:29.We are on BBC Three for a little while yet. We get to 1 1pm, we will
:28:30. > :28:44.switch over to BBC Two and back tomorrow at 8pm for the doubles.
:28:45. > :29:27.Querrey serving to stay in the second set.
:29:28. > :29:35.He's serving well. He has a good rhythm on that first serve today.
:29:36. > :29:37.That's what we say about clay-court tennis. Big service, big on
:29:38. > :30:12.anything. He has won only one match on Davis
:30:13. > :30:20.Cup. He has lost five. His win against Victor Troich has given him
:30:21. > :30:26.handy place. Overall he has won four and lost
:30:27. > :30:49.six. Smart play from Ward. Taking the
:30:50. > :30:52.pace off the first serve. Realising that you have to control the rally.
:30:53. > :31:11.Make your opponent move. Very, very good play.
:31:12. > :31:16.And playing against a player who is higher ranked than you, you likes to
:31:17. > :31:18.boss the rallies, you don't always need power. It is more important to
:31:19. > :32:00.have the precision. He is ahead again. 6-5. He knows at
:32:01. > :32:05.the very least he will have a break. A chance to have a rest.
:32:06. > :32:10.. We talk about the top players, sorry for laughing, it sounds like,
:32:11. > :32:17.I don't know what instrument that could be playing! The playing the
:32:18. > :32:21.scoreboard is important, rather than playing catch-up. Or worry being the
:32:22. > :32:25.scenario of the tie, the surroundings, the crowd, the
:32:26. > :32:29.opponent. It is little steps at a time. Getting in front of the
:32:30. > :32:38.opponent. Making him serve to stay in the match. To catch up.
:32:39. > :32:46.Here we go, the cameramen down tools as the commercial world go for their
:32:47. > :32:51.break. Oh, dear, good old BBC. Keep a camera high. Thank you very much.
:32:52. > :33:02.There we go. A lovely city, San Diego. Out by the Causeway. Some
:33:03. > :33:17.beautiful beaches and locations there.
:33:18. > :33:23.So often we talk about the importance of taking a break point
:33:24. > :33:29.and taking the latter stages of the game, but the first point of a game,
:33:30. > :33:36.when serving to stay on the set is crucial.
:33:37. > :34:31.I thought he had hooked that wide for a second.
:34:32. > :34:41.So a tie-break it is. So often in tie-breaks, you talk
:34:42. > :34:56.about players who are serving better. Querrey has been relentless
:34:57. > :35:02.about that in his serve. It's a lot of tie-breakers he has
:35:03. > :35:16.played! A good start.
:35:17. > :35:20.. A bit cautious there from Querrey on the backhand in the middle of
:35:21. > :35:30.that rally. He didn't do anything with it. He got punished.
:35:31. > :35:35.A good tie-break play-off, you are thinking about taking one of two
:35:36. > :36:51.points. Getting one of these next two, you are in good shape.
:36:52. > :36:58.Oh, there it is. A gift. Oh! What was that all about? What a
:36:59. > :37:03.shocking point that was. He should have done more with the
:37:04. > :37:08.ground stroke in the first place. That top spin volley. He should have
:37:09. > :37:13.done more with that. This was a full arm swinging volley that you teach
:37:14. > :37:24.in clinics. Don't take the racket back that far on the volley, please.
:37:25. > :37:28.He had that. Just a little more punch there. It had him across
:37:29. > :37:44.court. Yes, an opportunity for Ward.
:37:45. > :38:26.Back on Serb in the tie-break. -- back on serve in the tie-break.
:38:27. > :38:37.Ward and Leon Smith will know the importance of this set. To go two
:38:38. > :39:01.sets to love down away in the Davis Cup. It makes the final score
:39:02. > :39:07.bigger. There is something about his
:39:08. > :39:12.movement up the court, Ross, that does not fill you with confidence.
:39:13. > :39:16.It is a tricky volley, admittedly but he will have been expected to
:39:17. > :39:21.have made it. He is known not to have huge ability
:39:22. > :39:29.around the net. He relies on the forehand. Trying to hit winners from
:39:30. > :39:36.the main court. If you can make him play volley, as Ward has done. You
:39:37. > :39:41.have a chance. Oh, it clipped the line.
:39:42. > :39:48.I thought that was going out. A tiny puff of West Coast breeze has
:39:49. > :40:17.maybe assisted Great Britain there. 5-3. This is for set point.
:40:18. > :40:26.What a shaky tiebreaker he played here. Miss-hit another ball in that
:40:27. > :40:29.rally. But Ward deserves this lead.
:40:30. > :40:35.He does. He has done really well to get to
:40:36. > :40:40.this position. Three set points. Two serves to come for Querrey, but Ward
:40:41. > :40:44.knows, even if the American wins these, he will have another on his
:40:45. > :40:52.own serve if necessary. He won't need it! He takes the first
:40:53. > :40:57.one. Ward is back in this match. And if any across the tie, you would
:40:58. > :41:06.say this was the match that America has their banker. So for Britain to
:41:07. > :41:11.have it at one set all, it is a huge positive for Leon Smith's men.
:41:12. > :41:17.The pressure is on now. Up a set he looked confident. Now at
:41:18. > :41:22.1-1, he has to win this match. Otherwise the USA are in big
:41:23. > :41:29.trouble. Obviously. He knows it. Leon Smith, in his ninth tie as the
:41:30. > :41:39.captain since taking over from John here in 2010. He has won eight. He
:41:40. > :41:44.has lost the single one. That was the quarter-final in group 1 against
:41:45. > :41:47.Belgium. Decent players in Belgium these days. Generally, they have
:41:48. > :41:51.been steadily working their way through the back waters of the
:41:52. > :41:58.Euro-Africa Zone. Not a place you want to be in the Davis Cup as John
:41:59. > :42:10.will testify here. That Turkey match was down at Eastbourne. And Hungary,
:42:11. > :42:15.Luxembourg. Tunisia, low key was mot quite the word, but you work your
:42:16. > :42:26.way up the divisions and earn a right to play-off for the World
:42:27. > :42:30.Group. Which they did in Croatia last year.
:42:31. > :42:43.They have done well. They are pressive results.
:42:44. > :42:48.. The big ones the Russian win in Slovakia, without Andy, they were
:42:49. > :42:53.the two impressive results. Looking at the rankings and the teams, you
:42:54. > :43:00.would have thought it would be tough to win the matches. They came
:43:01. > :43:07.through it well. He deserves the credit for that, no doubt about it.
:43:08. > :43:13.Once again they are giving the court a watering. Don't know why they do
:43:14. > :43:18.that. It does not need it. And the crowd is thinning out again. I don't
:43:19. > :43:22.get this, I really don't. This is where America now need their home
:43:23. > :43:32.support to help them through this tricky situation.
:43:33. > :43:49.Well, exactly. If they lose that much. If -- if they lose this
:43:50. > :43:54.match... The movement of Querrey, the ability of the man on the
:43:55. > :43:58.surface, comparing it to a player like Andy Murray. It is like chalk
:43:59. > :44:03.and cheese. There is no flexibility in the game.
:44:04. > :44:09.Once he is behind the eight-ball he cannot move. An impressive set. A
:44:10. > :44:14.great recovery from James Ward. Losing a first set when you are
:44:15. > :44:18.thumped like that in Davis Cup, there is nothing more when you are
:44:19. > :44:41.playing for your country, it is easy to panic a bit.
:44:42. > :44:44.Well, America, you feel have to find Davis Cup players for the future
:44:45. > :44:51.from somewhere. Their resources are rather thin at the moment. Rodrigo
:44:52. > :44:59.De Triano was a -- Andy Roddick was a main stay of their Davis Cup team.
:45:00. > :45:13.The likes of Mehdi Fish giving support.
:45:14. > :45:19.And Jack Socchi, and looking back James Blake. Another top player. He
:45:20. > :45:23.has dropped away and stopped playing.
:45:24. > :45:28.It is quite scarce. The problem with the court here, the
:45:29. > :45:31.man with the hose has not wiggled it about enough in that corner. It has
:45:32. > :45:48.created a little flood. Well, Ryan Harrison. He is still
:45:49. > :45:57.only 21. He is down at 121 in the world. When he was 18 and bursting
:45:58. > :46:02.on the scene. You would o not have anticipated
:46:03. > :46:06.that for Harrison. Struggling right now.
:46:07. > :46:11.So many players from the States are comfortable in the home court. They
:46:12. > :46:16.get all of their results in America, but they struggle when they have to
:46:17. > :46:29.travel on these trips. As a tennis player you have to.
:46:30. > :46:34.You see that at the start of the European clay season. A tournament
:46:35. > :46:41.also in Houston that the Americans play, then complain at Monte Carlo.
:46:42. > :46:51.So don't play Houston, come to Europe and prepare! Lovely angle. He
:46:52. > :46:56.is playing well, James Ward. He is playing very well. Once he
:46:57. > :47:02.gets Querrey on the run, Querrey does not move well enough. Corner to
:47:03. > :48:07.corner, and this does not suit him. He gets stuck and cannot slide into
:48:08. > :48:12.the shots when he is out wide. Well, captain, Jim Courier, is not
:48:13. > :48:21.quite putting himself in the team just yet. An important hold for
:48:22. > :48:26.Querrey there at of the, at the start of the third set. He has to
:48:27. > :48:34.believe he can win this tie, James Ward. It is shown that he can.
:48:35. > :48:43.Absolutely and the amount of forced errors. They are only two apart.
:48:44. > :48:47.Earlier, Ward was making so many unforced errors but now Querrey is
:48:48. > :48:57.the one. His shot selection has been poor.
:48:58. > :49:03.He has this rather laconic lazy style about his game, Querrey. It is
:49:04. > :49:26.deceptive, with the serve and the forehand it is almost like this will
:49:27. > :49:30.do. Pop it back over. I suppose when you possess a big
:49:31. > :49:35.serve and booming forehand, sometimes it is easy to sit back and
:49:36. > :50:17.rely on the weapons. . Yes, for Querrey he needs those two
:50:18. > :50:23.things to fire. The wind is getting up out there.
:50:24. > :50:31.You can probably pick up the sound of it, buffeting the court
:50:32. > :51:35.microphones. Ward must be careful here at 15-30.
:51:36. > :51:44.Well for all his good work at the end of the second set, that is a
:51:45. > :51:49.give away and Querrey is ahead 2-0 in the third.
:51:50. > :51:53.Such a pity. He played so well in the second. He hung in there. The
:51:54. > :51:58.shot selection was good. So many balls at the right time. Getting
:51:59. > :52:17.back into good positions. Then that game, he really chucked it away.
:52:18. > :52:21.It is awkward serving there with that sun. The shadow make it is
:52:22. > :52:48.tough for a player when the ball comes in and out of the shadow.
:52:49. > :52:55.John we talk about the experience of playing matches and big matches.
:52:56. > :53:11.Querrey has done well to settle the tied but Ward has not played too
:53:12. > :53:16.smartly the last five mips. It is about the first volley winner
:53:17. > :53:21.he has made today. He liked them at that height, that is for sure. If
:53:22. > :54:22.you missed that one, you would have been in real trouble.
:54:23. > :54:29.This perhaps is where the difference comes, when you are not playing on
:54:30. > :54:37.the full tour, week in, week out. You have done well. Worked back in a
:54:38. > :54:43.set. Won a tie-break, then you go 3-0 down in the next set. Is that a
:54:44. > :54:47.consequence of being at that level? I don't know. I think it is a lapse
:54:48. > :54:52.in concentration and focus. There was a huge uplift from the team for
:54:53. > :54:57.Ward with the winning of that second set, but I think it is a loss of
:54:58. > :55:01.concentration. Sloppy points. He was so successful throughout the whole
:55:02. > :55:07.of the second set. The rallies were extended. He was able to build the
:55:08. > :55:13.point. Here he has hardly made a ball. And when he has gone for the
:55:14. > :55:19.early shots, there has been risk and the unforced errors have come out.
:55:20. > :55:24.I agree. He controlled the first set, playing smart tennis, now he
:55:25. > :55:29.has not only missed them but missed them by a long way. A strange shot
:55:30. > :55:36.selection. He has to get back to business. This set is going wick
:55:37. > :55:42.quickly. And it is not like Querrey has played better. That is anowing.
:55:43. > :55:49.If he had a purple patch but he has not. He is up.
:55:50. > :55:55.Ward has come from a challenger tournament in Hawaii.
:55:56. > :56:20.Hawaii, San Diego. Not so bad. Back-to-back.
:56:21. > :56:27.Last year at that tournament, the director of tennis at the club where
:56:28. > :56:32.it was held, got a wildcard. There is hope for us all.
:56:33. > :56:39.A nice forehand down the line. A nice shape on that.
:56:40. > :56:47.That's an example. He is pushed out wide. Four feet behind the baseline,
:56:48. > :56:53.then he goes for it down the line. There is no logic. If he made it,
:56:54. > :57:00.questioner we are would have had the whole open cross-court. There is no
:57:01. > :57:11.margin for er-Onuoha the shot. It is like his brain switched off. You
:57:12. > :57:16.can't do that at this level. It is the first an the third set is
:57:17. > :57:23.almost the same with a very good second.
:57:24. > :57:26.There you go. 11 errors already in this set. He made ten in the second
:57:27. > :58:56.set and that was 13 games. Two break-point chances have slipped
:58:57. > :59:32.by. Here is a third. He was struggling to get his feet
:59:33. > :59:38.moving in the middle of that rally, but a decent shot to finish with.
:59:39. > :59:41.The momentum shifts here. If he can hold this from 0-40, what a
:59:42. > :00:06.confidence boost that would be. . Once again, Ward, when he increases
:00:07. > :00:10.the target, he plays down the middle more consistently, he wins the
:00:11. > :00:13.longer rallies. He has good ground strokes. It is effective against the
:00:14. > :01:19.big US player. Well done. Good hold. Again from
:01:20. > :01:23.0-40, well done indeed. It is the second time he has done that under
:01:24. > :01:29.intense pressure. As John says, still a break down.
:01:30. > :01:33.Not as bad as it could be. No, if he had lost that game, that
:01:34. > :01:58.set was all over. We still have a shot here.
:01:59. > :02:40.Screamer! He's got natural power of both wings, does Ward. If he can
:02:41. > :02:45.crack shots like that. This is a crucial game. We are
:02:46. > :02:51.leaving coverage on BBC Three. We are moving to BBC Two. We are back
:02:52. > :02:55.here tomorrow night on BBC Three with live features of the doubles
:02:56. > :03:01.match that should feature Andy Murray at 8.00pm on BBC Three.
:03:02. > :03:06.Talking of Andy Murray, he has given Great Britain a super start in the
:03:07. > :03:09.tie defeating Donald Young of the number two American in straight
:03:10. > :03:12.sets. If you want to continue watching this match, you can on BBC
:03:13. > :03:34.Two. If not, goodbye from us all.
:03:35. > :03:35.Goodbye. Hi, I'm Tina. Time for us our check on the global news
:03:36. > :03:39.channels. Amanda Knox spoke to ABC. She told
:03:40. > :03:42.them she'd fight being extradited to Italy after her murder conviction
:03:43. > :03:45.was reinstated. Fox said Meredith Kercher's family want her sent back.
