:00:27. > :00:32.Good evening. If you weren't with us over on BBC Three, welcome to our

:00:33. > :00:37.coverage of the Davis Cup tie between Great Britain and the United

:00:38. > :00:40.States. It is being played in California on a temporary clay

:00:41. > :00:44.court. There was only a small crowd on the opening day and for the home

:00:45. > :00:49.fans that did turn up, well very little to cheer about because Andy

:00:50. > :00:56.Murray put on a masterclass. He defeated the number two American,

:00:57. > :01:00.Donald Young in straight sets. And little more than an hour-and-a-half.

:01:01. > :01:09.It was Andy Murray at his very best. A perfect start for Andy and the

:01:10. > :01:11.British team. So well done to Andy and let's hear what he had to say

:01:12. > :01:19.after the match. Very well played. A fabulous start

:01:20. > :01:24.and a dream start for Great Britain? Yeah. It is important to get off to

:01:25. > :01:29.a good start. You know, the two singles matches today, I go in as

:01:30. > :01:33.favourite and Sam will be going in as favourite against James and it

:01:34. > :01:37.puts the pressure on Sam a lot to play a good match and James can

:01:38. > :01:41.hopefully play a little bit freer. It was a good start.

:01:42. > :01:52.Yes, it was a very good start, indeed. Confirmation of the score:

:01:53. > :02:09.Murray wins and James Ward against Sam Querrey.

:02:10. > :02:18.It was Sam Querrey against James Ward. Querrey raced through the

:02:19. > :02:23.opening set. The second set went to a tie-break and the American was

:02:24. > :02:28.tentative. He made errors like that that he would want to forget and he

:02:29. > :02:38.is the experienced player out on court. Ward went to 6-3 and another

:02:39. > :02:46.Querrey error over the baseline and James proved what a fighter he is in

:02:47. > :02:51.previous Davis Cup matches. This is it. 1-1. He knew that one was out

:02:52. > :02:56.and James Ward involved in a battle once again. Well, that was the good

:02:57. > :03:03.news for Britain at the end of that second set, but I'm afraid it didn't

:03:04. > :03:08.go well in the third set because James was breaks down and indeed, is

:03:09. > :03:12.just serving here to take it to 4-2 in the third set. So we are ready

:03:13. > :03:16.for a battle. Can he get back in this third set? Let's join our

:03:17. > :03:30.commentators for this. Well, good evening. It has been

:03:31. > :03:35.erratic from Ward I am afraid in this third set aft doing so well to

:03:36. > :03:40.win this tie-break and level this match at 1-1. But Querrey the more

:03:41. > :03:42.experienced, the higher ranked of the two men. He is in control at the

:03:43. > :04:01.moment. Good fortune as well which gives him

:04:02. > :04:08.a break point in this game. Normally when your team-mate has a slice of

:04:09. > :04:13.luck or gets a big point like that, give him a lot of enthusiasm, but

:04:14. > :04:18.not much team atmosphere from the bench from the US Team. I always

:04:19. > :04:40.think often that determines the outcome of the match or the tie.

:04:41. > :04:52.A few of those from Querrey today and Ward will take them. Especially

:04:53. > :04:58.on break point. There is Donald Young who lost to Andy Murray.

:04:59. > :05:03.Murray was very professional. It couldn't have gone much better for

:05:04. > :05:07.him. This match is tighter than a lot of the locals were expecting. If

:05:08. > :05:15.Britain can just sneak this one and get a win here, two love after day

:05:16. > :05:19.one. They have a wonderful chance of beating the USA in the Davis Cup for

:05:20. > :05:48.the first time in 79 years. Well, I don't believe that. It drops

:05:49. > :06:03.over. One a piece in the game, I suppose. Another break point for

:06:04. > :06:06.Querrey. It is when you hit those net cords. Evens out, it is a load

:06:07. > :06:21.of rubbish. Well done. He held that nicely on

:06:22. > :06:56.the forehand. He just waited until Querrey committed himself.

:06:57. > :07:04.How good were those squash shots he hit there? Two in a row. It looked

:07:05. > :07:14.like he was done and dusted in that point. This is another game, he had

:07:15. > :07:26.love 30. Querrey had a lot of opportunities for a double break.

:07:27. > :07:40.That was one of the British coaches there.

:07:41. > :07:52.Oh yes! Querrey at his best with the forehand there. Yes, it is the type

:07:53. > :07:56.of tennis that brings Querrey, it is dangerous and having beaten Djokovic

:07:57. > :08:21.and beaten Murray, that's when he let's go. -- lets go.

:08:22. > :08:33.Wrong footing second serve ace. Got to love that. Where did that come

:08:34. > :08:43.from? Well, Ward has done a good job at times of digging himself out of

:08:44. > :08:58.situations. Now having to save break points. That was beautifully played.

:08:59. > :09:03.Stunning play from Ward and Querrey will be wondering how this match is

:09:04. > :09:08.still poised in the third set. Surely, this is a bigger lead that

:09:09. > :09:10.he should have and it plays on players minds when you don't take

:09:11. > :09:36.your opportunities. Do you think he enjoyed that? Well,

:09:37. > :09:38.he is starting to hit the ball really well again. Similar to the

:09:39. > :10:17.second set. That's a good second serve, but I

:10:18. > :10:27.just felt there that Ward, love 15, somehow get that back in the court.

:10:28. > :10:31.That's the captain of the United States team.

:10:32. > :11:00.What a player he was in his day. Done it again. I don't know what he

:11:01. > :11:12.is putting in his drop shot potion, but it's working. The best of five

:11:13. > :11:16.sets in Davis Cup. With Britain already one love up in the tie

:11:17. > :11:56.thanks to Andy Murray, huge significance on this match.

:11:57. > :12:32.He did well to get round there that quickly.

:12:33. > :12:42.Good from Ward. Good work here. These players have almost goaded

:12:43. > :12:45.each other to increase their level. They realise the value and the

:12:46. > :13:15.importance of the set. There is good tennis going on.

:13:16. > :13:28.He must have half thought, Ward, about pulling the trigger on that

:13:29. > :13:38.penultimate forehand. Querrey using all his experience in this

:13:39. > :13:43.situation. Oh dear. It just shows you, you can somehow dig a ball back

:13:44. > :13:48.into court. You never know. That was a good effort from Ward to get his

:13:49. > :14:06.racket on that serve. That was a nervy forehand though.

:14:07. > :14:13.In some ways, you look at the way Sam Querrey has been sort of

:14:14. > :14:39.playing, up and down and it is lucky that he served well.

:14:40. > :14:46.Querrey survives 12 scares in that game, no doubt about that. 5-2 up

:14:47. > :14:58.now. Strong position. Just going back to James Ward, and

:14:59. > :15:04.the bit that he had in the third, and the difference between James

:15:05. > :15:08.Ward's level and players 50, 100 places on, when they go into bad

:15:09. > :15:13.patches, they reset quickly. They might play one or two bad shots, but

:15:14. > :15:18.the top players play one and immediately are right back in it.

:15:19. > :15:24.When Ward goes off, he throws in bunches of three and four, when he

:15:25. > :15:29.loses without being able to reset during the game. If he wants to make

:15:30. > :15:36.that next rise up the level, he has got to claim a consistently and not

:15:37. > :15:44.go up and down all the time. You are spot on. This happens throughout the

:15:45. > :15:48.year. Sometimes it happens not just for points in a row but weeks in a

:15:49. > :15:52.row, and if he loses confidence he can go three or four weeks without

:15:53. > :15:57.winning matches and his base level, not just in a match or a set but

:15:58. > :16:01.over the course of weeks is not at the level it needs to be, to be

:16:02. > :16:07.ranked 50 in the world. When he plays well, when his level is like

:16:08. > :16:12.it is for the vast majority of this match, he hits it as well as

:16:13. > :16:17.Querrey. His ground strokes are as forceful. As penetrating to the

:16:18. > :16:19.mid-court. There was no reason why he cannot play to this level more

:16:20. > :16:50.often. The biggest difference between these

:16:51. > :16:55.two so far has been, the first serve and the way that Querrey dispatchers

:16:56. > :17:01.the ball in the mid-court. They have both played well in patches. --

:17:02. > :17:13.dispatches. This could be an interesting game if

:17:14. > :17:14.Ward can hold, here. Ward has been threatening, and this could be a

:17:15. > :17:31.tight game, the next game. That backs up what I was saying.

:17:32. > :17:35.After a good serve, he has not put the ball away and Querrey uses his

:17:36. > :18:29.forehand to put the pressure on. Ward has done what he can to keep

:18:30. > :18:33.this third set moving along. Now, what can you do to break this huge

:18:34. > :18:44.surge from the American, Sam Querrey? Six foot six. He has been

:18:45. > :18:58.as high as 17 in the world. Currently, Querrey, at 49, Ward at

:18:59. > :18:59.175 on the world list. That is the difference in quality, on paper,

:19:00. > :19:15.anyway. Many people think that Querrey's

:19:16. > :19:25.ranking is awfully low and of not so good quality, compared to his level.

:19:26. > :19:30.He had a couple of years in and around the top 20, didn't he?

:19:31. > :19:51.That was on the line. That is 30-0. Querrey not put off by the testing

:19:52. > :19:59.of the PA system in the baseball stadium, I presume. This being

:20:00. > :20:08.played in a temporary setup in one corner of the field on the baseball

:20:09. > :20:12.park. So much for getting tight. He has played three excellent points,

:20:13. > :20:17.Sam Querrey, backed up by that excellent serve, getting himself in

:20:18. > :20:32.at position to dominate the rally. He has served well today.

:20:33. > :20:43.Querrey dominant on serve, and he reads, two sets to one. -- he leads.

:20:44. > :20:51.The big man is giving America hope in this tie, but Britain have done

:20:52. > :20:55.enough to suggest that an upset as possible over the weekend. This is

:20:56. > :21:02.one of eight world group first round ties, and here is how things stand

:21:03. > :21:05.at the end of day one, 1-1 between the Czech Republic and the

:21:06. > :21:14.Netherlands, Robin Haase and Tomas Berdych with victories, a good five

:21:15. > :21:25.set victory for Haas over Radek Stepanek.

:21:26. > :21:35.Now Spain, 2-0 down to Germany but they are without Nadal, the rare and

:21:36. > :21:42.Almagro. Call Schreiber taking full advantage. France 2-0 ahead against

:21:43. > :21:56.Australia thanks to Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. 1-1,

:21:57. > :22:05.Argentina -Italy. Kazakhstan ahead against Belgium. And Serbia without

:22:06. > :22:11.Novak Djokovic, trailing Switzerland 2-0. Federal back in the Swiss team

:22:12. > :22:20.alongside Australian Open Stanislas Wawrinka. -- Australian Open

:22:21. > :22:23.champion. If they can keep that line-up for the rest of the season

:22:24. > :22:28.there was no reason why Switzerland cannot win the Davis Cup for the

:22:29. > :22:37.first time. Which you could argue is the one thing missing from Roger

:22:38. > :22:40.Federer's CB. -- CV. I cannot understand why he does not play more

:22:41. > :22:44.than Davis Cup. For the last five years, Stanislas Wawrinka has been a

:22:45. > :22:48.world-class player and those two together could easily have won the

:22:49. > :22:54.Davis Cup, but it was not to be, and Roger Federer has picked his

:22:55. > :22:58.occasions to play, just to help them stay up, because he rarely plays the

:22:59. > :23:00.first round. Hopefully now he's back he will play throughout the whole

:23:01. > :23:10.year. And he won that game with Stanislas

:23:11. > :23:25.Wawrinka in the doubles. Settled for silver in London in 2012. Will he be

:23:26. > :23:29.there in Rio? I presume so. These pictures from San Diego, California,

:23:30. > :23:35.the venue for this Davis Cup tie between the USA and Great Britain,

:23:36. > :23:40.two proud nations in the Davis Cup, the 19th time they have met. They

:23:41. > :23:51.contested the first Davis Cup tie in 1900, when Dwight Davis lined up at

:23:52. > :23:59.the cricket club in Boston. In the 1930s they met regularly. The last

:24:00. > :24:09.match a famous contest from the Arena in Birmingham in 1999.

:24:10. > :24:26.Confirmation of those first-round ties there.

:24:27. > :24:33.As you can see, Italy and Argentina playing for the right to meet the

:24:34. > :24:43.winners of this one. Britain's first world group tie in five years.

:24:44. > :25:23.James Ward to start the fourth set, 2-1 down.

:25:24. > :25:34.No matter what level you player, you know the importance of starting sets

:25:35. > :27:36.well, especially against a big server that you have not broken yet.

:27:37. > :27:45.Not a spacious start to the fourth set from James Ward, unfortunately.

:27:46. > :27:50.A loose game. Just so annoying watching when you have put much work

:27:51. > :27:56.into that second, and again, he has just donated that game. Querrey did

:27:57. > :28:00.not earn it, he did not have to do anything to break, and that is the

:28:01. > :28:05.least you have to do at this level, is make your opponent then these

:28:06. > :28:09.games. It was a sloppy game. Strange to predict. He had that wonderful

:28:10. > :28:12.second set but the first and third were not good with errors, and there

:28:13. > :28:35.is that early break. It has been a brilliant this play of

:28:36. > :28:48.serving by Sam Querrey. He has been devastating, he really has.

:28:49. > :28:59.Well, nothing you can do about that! He could move his position on

:29:00. > :29:06.return. He has not had break point. He has played for two hours. Hasn't

:29:07. > :29:15.been able to achieve a break point against the big serve, so I not

:29:16. > :29:23.break down as well, and give him a different sight to look at?

:29:24. > :29:40.Absolutely no problem with the drop shot from James Ward. That has

:29:41. > :29:42.worked a treat. Unfortunately you cannot win the match on drop shots

:29:43. > :29:57.alone. Leading the way for the United

:29:58. > :30:05.States in the absence of his good buddy, John Isner who picked up an

:30:06. > :30:10.ankle injury a few weeks ago ago in Perth. He was here and ready to

:30:11. > :30:12.play, but realistically, never in contention. Certainly that was the

:30:13. > :31:47.word that has come out. He always hits the ball well when in

:31:48. > :31:52.the extended rallies. It is just developing the point and

:31:53. > :32:23.developing those rallies which has been the struggle.

:32:24. > :33:00.Credit to Querrey where it is due. He is moving his opponent more

:33:01. > :33:13.Just missed, but not by much, but enough. Another break point for the

:33:14. > :33:17.United States. If Querrey does win this at least we know the tie will

:33:18. > :33:22.definitely be alive going into the final day and the battle of the

:33:23. > :33:28.number ones. There is Britain's number one, Andy Murray and he would

:33:29. > :34:29.play Querrey on Sunday which could decide the tie.

:34:30. > :34:40.Once again, he digs himself out of the hole to claw on to the American.

:34:41. > :34:49.That was a must win game for Ward. He did well. He did very well there.

:34:50. > :34:56.Would you give Querrey any sort of chance against Murray, John? No.

:34:57. > :35:03.Ross? No. LAUGHTER

:35:04. > :35:06.I can't see it. I just can't - he is serving brilliantly, but he is

:35:07. > :35:11.playing against, if not the best returner in the serve certainly the

:35:12. > :35:15.first two or three and I just see him making way too many balls for

:35:16. > :35:21.Querrey and I can't see how he can beat him over five sets on clay. If

:35:22. > :35:25.we presume it is heading this way to 1-1 in the tie and if we are

:35:26. > :35:29.confidently predicting that Murray is going to win on the final day,

:35:30. > :35:35.that's 2-1 to Britain with the doubles in between. So if Britain

:35:36. > :35:43.can somehow win that, you see them winning the tie? If we win the

:35:44. > :35:47.double tomorrow, it is all over. When you have got Murray as the

:35:48. > :36:03.singles player, you know that's a banker and so others will have to

:36:04. > :36:09.win too. Will this be Andy Murray's biggest match in Davis Cup? I think

:36:10. > :36:14.it will be. That's tomorrow. You can see that tomorrow over on BBC Three

:36:15. > :36:18.from 8pm. I have a feeling that's going to be the best match of the

:36:19. > :37:15.tie. That's going to be a - it could be an epic doubles, I think.

:37:16. > :37:24.Brilliantly done. He has hit some good little dipping

:37:25. > :37:30.passing shots, Ward. He realised that Querrey isn't a great volleyer.

:37:31. > :37:33.He knows he will get a chance to pass on the next ball. He has got a

:37:34. > :38:01.big chance here. Is this the moment that Ward springs

:38:02. > :38:09.to life again in this match? Two break points. Well, the best tennis

:38:10. > :38:22.of the Brit is actually better. Querrey hasn't been regular enough.

:38:23. > :38:33.The first break points. That's a big forehand. Ward did well to nudge

:38:34. > :38:34.that back into court. He has got to cover the big one, you would have

:38:35. > :38:48.thought. Well, that serve has just got him

:38:49. > :38:49.out of trouble. Over and over again the first serve has been

:38:50. > :39:51.magnificent. Credit to Querrey. He holds on from

:39:52. > :40:03.15-40 in the game. He knows the importance of that, doesn't he? You

:40:04. > :40:09.can see it. There has been so many momentum swings in this match. They

:40:10. > :40:14.were so one directional to the US and then Ward coming back and the US

:40:15. > :42:16.again. It is almost tough to predict what's going to happen next.

:42:17. > :42:28.Well played. A good game from Ward. The forehand of Ward's has worked

:42:29. > :42:34.well today. He has hit it well. It is slightly up and down, actually

:42:35. > :42:39.his whole game is. It looks like he is hitting the ball better and more

:42:40. > :42:50.aggressively and more flight in the second and third set. He gets good

:42:51. > :42:53.purchase on the ball. Well, if you weren't with us on BBC Three

:42:54. > :42:58.earlier, you will have missed the excitement of the brass band that

:42:59. > :43:03.they've shipped in on freebies today. They were playing well today.

:43:04. > :43:07.It sounds like the lead trumpeter has had a funny five minutes, but

:43:08. > :43:11.anyway! They are attempting to get the crowd going. I don't think

:43:12. > :43:15.anything will get the crowd going by the look of some of them. They have

:43:16. > :43:19.settled in for the weekend! It looks as if it is getting quite chilly out

:43:20. > :43:22.there as well. There has been a lot of wind and we've been hearing that

:43:23. > :43:32.on the microphones, haven't we, John? Yes. I don't think I have

:43:33. > :43:39.heard music like this at a Davis Cup match. It is not the ra-ra-ra you

:43:40. > :43:49.would expect. No. I quite like the idea of it. It is different to the

:43:50. > :45:20.anthems and melodies they normally play.

:45:21. > :45:33.Familiar tale on the Querrey serve. It flashed by that game, 4-2.

:45:34. > :45:47.Nothing he could do. Sometimes break points are squandered.

:45:48. > :47:00.The Querrey coach in the bottom left.

:47:01. > :47:06.That has just been pushed wide by Ward and he knows it. Not called by

:47:07. > :47:10.the line judge, but the umpire, all over that.

:47:11. > :47:46.15-30. Big point coming up here, that's for sure.

:47:47. > :48:26.Ward just holding on and trying to keep in touch.

:48:27. > :48:32.Well, it might not save him in this match, but the sort of shot that

:48:33. > :48:40.gives you hope that if it comes down to a fifth and final rubber that

:48:41. > :48:45.Ward has the ammunition to do damage to Donald Young. I do not think

:48:46. > :48:50.there was any doubt about that, in glimpses we have seen, he can

:48:51. > :48:53.certainly hurt Donald Young but he has got to avoid these dips that he

:48:54. > :48:58.has. Because Donald Young is going to get a lot of balls back. He has

:48:59. > :49:02.certainly got the pace and power to cause an upset there, no question

:49:03. > :49:10.about it. He has played well at times. It is just, the consistency

:49:11. > :49:17.has not been the enough. And seeing Andy Murray down there, he will be

:49:18. > :49:24.dissecting the Querrey game. He loves to watch tennis, he watches a

:49:25. > :49:30.lot of tennis and works at opponents, just little tips that he

:49:31. > :49:34.can pick up on and think back when he is in difficult situations in

:49:35. > :49:38.matches, he knows where Querrey likes to serve, and where he tends

:49:39. > :49:45.to hit those big shots and rely on, so invaluable knowledge Andy will be

:49:46. > :49:50.picking up. That is all in his mind, or does he have a little black book?

:49:51. > :49:55.It is in his mind. Querrey will do the same thing as he did five user

:49:56. > :50:02.go on big points, more often than not. -- as he did five years ago.

:50:03. > :50:09.That is one way to silence the crowd. He has been going wide to

:50:10. > :50:21.that forehand side a lot and that time Ward picked it.

:50:22. > :50:30.He has got away with that. If you hit the tape with such power,

:50:31. > :50:51.chances are, it is going to fly over.

:50:52. > :51:14.I was hoping he would give us a little nod there.

:51:15. > :51:27.He has served well when he has been down in games, not that many service

:51:28. > :51:30.games, mind you, but he has had some 15-30 s and a big first service in,

:51:31. > :51:36.almost every time. He had a 15-40 in the last service

:51:37. > :51:47.game, too. 30-40. Where is he going to serve

:51:48. > :52:19.this serve? First time on a break point on his

:52:20. > :52:31.second serve. Oh, no. He has got to keep that in court. In a match of

:52:32. > :52:48.few chances, that is a bad miss. On his favoured side, too.

:52:49. > :52:55.You always know you have got a chance when Querrey comes in, if you

:52:56. > :53:08.can just make him play. Unconvincing, to say the least.

:53:09. > :53:19.Yes, there it is. Ward breaks for the first time in the match.

:53:20. > :53:34.It has been coming. He has hung in there so well, throughout this

:53:35. > :53:40.match, Ward, the team on their feet. Querrey must have thought that this

:53:41. > :55:10.was over, with Ward missing, and here we are level, in the fourth.

:55:11. > :55:26.Hard enough time with that mishit, but in the end, he has guided that

:55:27. > :55:31.very effectively, cross court on the half volley. It kind of looks easy

:55:32. > :55:55.in slow motion, but it is anything but.

:55:56. > :56:34.That was the first one really that Ward, he telegraphed that one, it

:56:35. > :56:36.was too deliberate and Querrey knew he was going to do this. He was onto

:56:37. > :56:58.it very quickly. Another first serve for Ward after

:56:59. > :58:04.the correction from the umpire. That was a very well constructive

:58:05. > :58:18.point from Ward, but Querrey hung in there, so well. -- Welk instructed

:58:19. > :58:22.-- well constructed. Where is this noise coming from? This is the first

:58:23. > :58:39.time in the day, isn't it? Banning on the line. -- Bang on the

:58:40. > :59:08.line. That one, he popped it straight down the T.

:59:09. > :59:19.Well, well, well, 5-4, great written, from a break down. -- Great

:59:20. > :59:22.Britain. Certainly, the pressure is on Sam Querrey now, coming up to

:59:23. > :59:33.serve, to stay in this set. He really should have won this set

:59:34. > :59:42.by now, Querrey, the chances he has had, and credit to Ward for hanging

:59:43. > :59:51.in. Who knows what is about to happen? So unpredictable. A good

:59:52. > :59:56.effort from Ward. Very good. He has played well in patches. When the

:59:57. > :00:01.ball is on court, being able to let loose on the forehand and backhand,

:00:02. > :00:06.he has hit the ball very well. Just his technique, his concentration

:00:07. > :00:12.lapses, sometimes costing too much, and that is the only thing that Leon

:00:13. > :00:18.would be telling him, keep the ball in court, keep trusting your shots,

:00:19. > :00:23.keep playing how we know you can play, how you have played for parts

:00:24. > :00:28.of this match. And getting that chat with his team captain now is key,

:00:29. > :00:32.isn't it? If he could just win this game, you have got to feel that

:00:33. > :00:40.Britain are one set away from winning the entire time. Absolutely.

:00:41. > :00:55.If sandbox. The pressure on this man. -- Ifs and buts.

:00:56. > :01:18.Hello! Great D, defence. That's a sliding squash court forehand.

:01:19. > :01:26.No, that's wide. The play has fallen apart here. What a turn around from

:01:27. > :02:06.4-2. Marvellous defence. He has got three

:02:07. > :02:15.set points almost from nowhere. Unbelievable. Querrey was in

:02:16. > :02:21.complete control, wasn't he? And the world number 175 from North London

:02:22. > :02:29.now has three set points to take us into a fifth and final set here.

:02:30. > :04:23.Didn't see this coming. Wow. Wow. We are on for a fifth set

:04:24. > :04:29.finale. So a fantastic day of tennis here in San Diego. Well played,

:04:30. > :04:32.James Ward. That's a brilliant comeback in that fourth set and the

:04:33. > :04:37.Americans frankly look shell-shocked. He fought so hard

:04:38. > :04:45.here. He kept the ball in court. Played the scoreboard well. Look how

:04:46. > :04:52.much it means to him. He defended mg nif icantly. The -- magnificently.

:04:53. > :04:58.The last few games, he has been digging up shots with no right to

:04:59. > :05:02.get back in play. Querrey looked as if it was a foregone conclusion. He

:05:03. > :05:10.had chances and didn't take it and now the pressure is totally on this

:05:11. > :05:17.man here. If he loses this set, he knows his team are basically out of

:05:18. > :05:22.it. Ross, this is one of the biggest sets in British Davis Cup recent

:05:23. > :05:27.history, isn't it? This is it. This is the tie here in this set. It is

:05:28. > :05:35.exactly. We knew that Murray would win the first match comfortably and

:05:36. > :05:41.now Querrey, we expect well, many would have expected him to win this

:05:42. > :05:47.match and Ward's level has been better than Querrey's and he hasn't

:05:48. > :05:53.managed to maintain it, but he played superbly in the latter stages

:05:54. > :05:58.of the third and fourth set. He needs to stay tough and to do

:05:59. > :06:03.exactly what got him to this position. Building the rally.

:06:04. > :06:10.Staying in the point. He doesn't want to go down an early break

:06:11. > :06:14.again. It is almost like his concentration goes and he had a huge

:06:15. > :06:20.lift here. The adrenalin is pumping. He has to pull back a little bit and

:06:21. > :06:23.just stay focussed, but not get too excited and blasting the ball

:06:24. > :06:27.because as you say quite rightly so, when he gets in these rallies and

:06:28. > :06:31.when he doesn't throw in the bunches of bag errors, he is matching

:06:32. > :06:41.Querrey at the back of the court and a lot of the times better than him.

:06:42. > :06:46.The coach, what seems to be a crucial time to talk to your player,

:06:47. > :06:50.off he has gone. He has gone to the rest room. Maybe he has got to make

:06:51. > :06:57.a TV feature for somebody, I don't know! Very strange! But anyway, this

:06:58. > :07:05.is a very significant set of tennis we are about to witness here. We

:07:06. > :07:09.have gone midnight, yes, it is just after 4pm in the afternoon out in

:07:10. > :07:14.San Diego. The last British win against the United States in the

:07:15. > :07:29.Davis Cup just to remind you, 1935, that was on grass at Wimbledon

:07:30. > :07:32.thanks to Austin and Perry. We are talking about a sizeable chunk of

:07:33. > :07:50.history here if Britain can win this weekend. Ward's, points won, 81%. It

:07:51. > :07:58.is almost double the winners off the forehand side for Ward. You wouldn't

:07:59. > :08:03.have expected that. That's for sure. So the fifth and final set. No

:08:04. > :08:10.tie-break. Like at Wimbledon, they will go on and on if necessary. And

:08:11. > :08:29.still no USA captain. It is such a strange sport this.

:08:30. > :08:33.There is so much conflict of interest in this sport of tennis.

:08:34. > :08:38.People with various hats. People seem incapable of wearing just one

:08:39. > :08:48.hat in the sport of tennis! What's wrong with their hat? That's what I

:08:49. > :09:15.want to know! As Ward starts this set really

:09:16. > :09:41.impressive. Well done, James. Knock him down

:09:42. > :09:45.while he is wobbling. Why not? That's the trouble when you wear

:09:46. > :09:50.that fancy suit, you can't run on the court. He is in no rush. He

:09:51. > :09:55.can't get there quickly. If he had a normal tracksuit on, he could have

:09:56. > :10:00.belted along ready to say some words of wisdom. This player needs some

:10:01. > :10:07.words of wisdom right now. His shoulders are getting very heavy

:10:08. > :10:11.about now. His captaincy style is to play it

:10:12. > :10:15.cool and to chat away and keep things relaxed on the bench and you

:10:16. > :10:19.wonder if that's going to have to change and whether he is going to

:10:20. > :10:27.have to start talking tough. This is a match Querrey should have got done

:10:28. > :10:33.by now. He is not going to do it with shots

:10:34. > :10:34.like that. It is a wobbly, creaky performance from the American at the

:10:35. > :11:04.moment. He is putting more first serves back

:11:05. > :11:10.into play. He is reading it better now, isn't he? Even the ground

:11:11. > :11:12.strokes he seems to be able to pick where Querrey is going to hit the

:11:13. > :12:05.next ball. Well, Ward has done one thing

:12:06. > :12:11.exceptionally today is use the angle on his forehand to drag the big man

:12:12. > :12:20.off the centre of the court. He has been profited with big success. Two

:12:21. > :12:46.break points for Britain. The first saved in emphatic style.

:12:47. > :13:05.Well, I'm not too sure Querrey can believe what is happening out here.

:13:06. > :13:13.A complete turn around. 4-2 up in the fourth set leading 2-1. Now he

:13:14. > :13:17.is two love down in the fifth. At 4-2 Jonathan he hadn't faced break

:13:18. > :13:31.point up until then and now three breaks in a row against Ward.

:13:32. > :13:43.Amazing. That serve has been so effective out wide to the forehand.

:13:44. > :14:15.So how many out wides did you score? He can draw on that experience of

:14:16. > :14:26.that victory in Coventry last year. Five sets kept that tie alive.

:14:27. > :14:33.That's on the line. It is punishing shots from Ward. There is an air of

:14:34. > :14:37.confidence about his game right now. Speaking to Lyon Smith on the phone

:14:38. > :14:39.last night, there was an air of confidence certainly from the

:14:40. > :15:12.captain about this match-up. It worked again that back shot

:15:13. > :15:37.tactic. There is Leon Smith. He knows his stuff.

:15:38. > :15:57.Everything and anything for the Brit. Really getting behind James

:15:58. > :16:02.Ward. He has got a great voice on him and he does not care who is

:16:03. > :16:16.around, he will scream and shout for the British team. Lots of comments

:16:17. > :16:19.coming in on social media. Use the hashtag #bbctennis if you want to

:16:20. > :16:31.get in touch. I am sure that those of you are

:16:32. > :16:38.still watching at 20 past midnight. -- loads of you. Late-night action

:16:39. > :16:43.from San Diego, the significance of which we cannot overstate. If Ward

:16:44. > :16:48.can complete this victory Britain will be 2-0 up in the tie with a

:16:49. > :16:53.chance to seal it tomorrow either in the doubles or the reverse singles

:16:54. > :17:00.featuring Andy Murray on Sunday. The chance for a famous win in

:17:01. > :17:03.America's backyard, on clay, to reach the quarterfinals of the Davis

:17:04. > :17:09.Cup. That is what we are dealing with here. And you have got to say,

:17:10. > :17:31.at the moment, it is all thanks to this man.

:17:32. > :17:39.Querrey has gone to pieces. This is what the Davis Cup can do. The

:17:40. > :17:45.rankings sometimes go out of the window. Ward is playing the match of

:17:46. > :17:46.his life considering the circumstances and Querrey is

:17:47. > :18:15.choking. He is just playing out of his mind

:18:16. > :18:21.now. Incredible quality from Ward. Seven games on the bounds, trying to

:18:22. > :18:31.break Querrey for the fourth time in a row. -- on the bounce.

:18:32. > :18:41.Oh, ho-ho! He is saving his best till last as that match clock ticks

:18:42. > :18:45.towards three hours. James Ward is producing a fantastic form is for

:18:46. > :19:00.his country. Completely against the odds. -- fantastic performance. He

:19:01. > :19:07.has got him! Ho-ho-ho! That is scarcely believable. Eight games in

:19:08. > :19:14.a row. The whole thing seems to add up. Laughing in the middle of the

:19:15. > :19:19.fourth set, he was so relaxed, and now, Ward is flying. James Ward, if

:19:20. > :19:30.he wins this match, which I think he will do now, obviously, he should

:19:31. > :19:38.just get a tape of this match and watch it every night before a big

:19:39. > :19:45.match. It is terrific, isn't it? The next changeover could well be the

:19:46. > :19:56.last. You wonder whether the captain, Tim Curry, is -- Courier,

:19:57. > :20:02.is going to start earning his sizeable pay packet. There will be

:20:03. > :20:04.questions about his choice of venue and surface if this match goes the

:20:05. > :20:33.wrong way for him. You have been there, you have been a

:20:34. > :20:38.Davis Cup captain. Is there any point being cool and calm when your

:20:39. > :20:43.man has lost eight games in a row? He needs a rocket, doesn't he? Yes.

:20:44. > :21:00.He has got to do something different.

:21:01. > :21:11.We can just see the nerves, he could easily have got round and hit a

:21:12. > :21:12.forehand on that one but he elected to let the ball coming to him and he

:21:13. > :21:57.mishit backhand. Bit of a slow movement there, James.

:21:58. > :22:05.For all his recent brilliance, still two games away, and this, the break

:22:06. > :22:11.that chance for Querrey. -- break-back.

:22:12. > :22:46.I don't believe that. That was an ugly looking backhand, too. Didn't

:22:47. > :22:58.hit that well, got lucky with it. One of the breaks retrieved, but

:22:59. > :23:06.more importantly, Ross, he has broken that sequence. First game in

:23:07. > :23:11.nine for the big American. Ward was on a roll, and if it was not for the

:23:12. > :23:15.American thing his game and getting a little bit fortunate this game

:23:16. > :23:20.would be over in a few more minutes, but it is difficult to close out

:23:21. > :23:25.matches. The toughest game to win is always the last one, especially in

:23:26. > :23:30.America, in the Davis Cup. You trained so hard to get to that

:23:31. > :23:36.position and work so hard for 3.5 hours, it could be. James Ward needs

:23:37. > :23:41.that little bit of a push. To keep trying to extend the lead, but take

:23:42. > :23:46.your time off the gas. That is what the captain will be telling him

:23:47. > :23:51.right now. He has emerged as a significant Davis Cup player. You

:23:52. > :23:55.have been in the team for the last few years and there was time towards

:23:56. > :24:00.the end of John's captaincy when we were struggling. We were struggling

:24:01. > :24:03.to find players who could step up to the plate to win singles matches for

:24:04. > :24:10.great written. Andy Murray said it himself full stop when there was a

:24:11. > :24:15.good number to, he would feel more encouraged to play again. That is

:24:16. > :24:25.why he is here, because he feels like his number two is back.

:24:26. > :24:33.Ward has been onto the Querrey first serve, shifting his position well,

:24:34. > :24:36.getting a lot more balls back on the court, and that is what has

:24:37. > :24:42.surprised the American. He is not used to getting so many balls back.

:24:43. > :24:57.He is forcing Querrey to do that every point.

:24:58. > :25:08.Querrey has been a top 50 player for so long. He can close matches like

:25:09. > :25:10.this out and think, I fancy myself, but before that, no, but if he gets

:25:11. > :25:32.to 4-2. He has just got to keep the lid on

:25:33. > :25:47.his emotions, Ward. Oh, dear. The giant head.

:25:48. > :26:06.Well played. That was just an exquisite point. The guide to

:26:07. > :26:07.backhand drop shots will be in all good retailers by Christmas, and it

:26:08. > :26:31.is by James Ward. Is that significant, Ross, that the

:26:32. > :26:40.comeback in this game, this would be zipped away in Querrey's favour, and

:26:41. > :26:49.Ward is reminding him, as he has done the whole match, all the match,

:26:50. > :26:51.he has been gutsy, he has stayed close, he has never let his opponent

:26:52. > :27:07.get too far away. That was an edgy steered backhand

:27:08. > :27:12.that just came up on the ball. Even with Querrey's experience he will be

:27:13. > :27:17.thinking about how this is supposed to be a guaranteed. And those

:27:18. > :27:33.thoughts, no matter where you are, they still come into your head.

:27:34. > :27:41.The twists in the latter part of this match are unbelievable. You

:27:42. > :27:49.wouldn't have thought that Ward would come back from 4-2 down in the

:27:50. > :27:56.fourth set. We haven't had served since 4-2, against one of the

:27:57. > :28:01.biggest serves in world tennis. And James Ward, the son of a London

:28:02. > :28:04.cabbie, Arsenal fan, 175 in the world, is about to serve for the

:28:05. > :28:20.match. And, as games go, this is right up

:28:21. > :28:24.there, right up there. From a British Davis Cup point of view,

:28:25. > :28:30.this is pretty much unknown territory. One of the best away

:28:31. > :28:38.performances of all time, for someone of his ranking, going up

:28:39. > :28:40.against who he is going up against, it is quite amazing, given the

:28:41. > :28:56.position he was in. Leon Smith. What a job he has done,

:28:57. > :29:27.the young captain of this team. It is one of those nights, isn't

:29:28. > :29:31.it? But a couple of points, sitting back in your chair, and you have got

:29:32. > :29:55.to move forward a little bit. This one, right to the edge.

:29:56. > :30:10.Yes! Ward has done it again. Forehand down the line. There is

:30:11. > :30:13.Jim, the London cabby, in the crowd. He must be very nervous, but they

:30:14. > :30:35.proud right now. Two points away. After three hours and ten minutes of

:30:36. > :30:39.topsy-turvy tennis, James Ward has the chance, the match point to score

:30:40. > :31:07.the win of his life. That is one of the best victories

:31:08. > :31:17.you are ever going to see in Davis Cup. James Ward, fantastic from 2-1

:31:18. > :31:23.down and a breakdown in the fourth. -- a break down in the fourth and

:31:24. > :31:28.Britain on clay away to the United States lead two love and are one

:31:29. > :31:34.match away from winning on clay against the United States for the

:31:35. > :31:40.first time in 81 years. And you have got to say that the United States

:31:41. > :31:46.have blown their banker in this tie. That was the match they had to win.

:31:47. > :31:50.Big smiles from Murray, but wasn't it interesting the reaction of the

:31:51. > :31:55.captain, Leon Smith? No real celebration. A hug for Ward. He knew

:31:56. > :32:00.it. Just got the sense that he believed this was a good match-up.

:32:01. > :32:05.That's why he selected Ward. It is why he put his faith in him. To go

:32:06. > :32:12.and get the result out here for Britain. So the simple situation is

:32:13. > :32:16.that if Britain win tomorrow's doubles they will win this tie and

:32:17. > :32:21.they will move into the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup.

:32:22. > :32:30.What an amazing achievement that would be.

:32:31. > :32:35.I think everyone in San Diego is in complete shock at the way their

:32:36. > :32:37.number one player failed to complete that victory. Credit to James Ward.

:32:38. > :32:51.What a comeback. Well, all you can ask is for a

:32:52. > :32:57.player not to be intimidated to have the heart for battle. James Ward had

:32:58. > :33:02.it all. What a win from Britain's number two player. It means that

:33:03. > :33:07.Britain is two up against the United States after the opening day.

:33:08. > :33:13.Earlier, this evening Andy Murray, well straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 up

:33:14. > :33:18.against Donald Young of the United States. A wonderful win for Andy

:33:19. > :33:30.Murray. Boy, the big talking point of this match is going to be James

:33:31. > :33:37.Ward's win over Sam Querrey. So Britain are to up. Wow, I just can't

:33:38. > :33:41.imagine what that was like. You watch the first set and you think

:33:42. > :33:48.this is the same story as Donald Young and to have the guts to stay

:33:49. > :33:52.with it. What an amazing performance. An incredible

:33:53. > :33:57.performance from Ward. He defended well and never let Querrey get away

:33:58. > :34:01.from him. At the end of the fourth we thought it was all over and

:34:02. > :34:06.suddenly eight games on the bounce and Ward is flying. His best was

:34:07. > :34:09.incredible. Very, very high standards and he is a Davis Cup

:34:10. > :34:14.player and he loves Davis Cup. Well, you have sat in that chair as Davis

:34:15. > :34:18.Cup captain. That's all you need from a player exactly what James

:34:19. > :34:23.gave and particularly in the last set? It was gutsy. It shows you that

:34:24. > :34:29.Davis Cup is all about when you get somebody like James Ward ranked

:34:30. > :34:34.lower and comes up against a player of Sam Querrey's class. He gets

:34:35. > :34:39.beaten and hangs in there and James Ward is a Davis Cup player. Some

:34:40. > :34:51.players play above their ranking and some play below it. He is playing

:34:52. > :34:56.above his rating. Why doesn't he do that all the time? Now, he proved he

:34:57. > :35:01.can beat, you know, world-class players on the clay? Well, as we

:35:02. > :35:04.were saying in the rallies, when he was going toe-to-toe with Sam

:35:05. > :35:07.Querrey, he was staying with him and was better than him. The only be

:35:08. > :35:11.thing that Sam Querrey, the difference was, he was serving

:35:12. > :35:15.better at the time Sam Querrey and getting free points on his serve,

:35:16. > :35:19.but other than that Ward was with him the whole way. He should get a

:35:20. > :35:23.copy of that film and watch it every single night before he plays a

:35:24. > :35:27.match. It shows what he can do. Producing tennis from a different

:35:28. > :35:34.planet. I wonder if he can string a sentence together? Let's find out.

:35:35. > :35:38.Here he is talking to Russell Fuller. This must be the greatest

:35:39. > :35:46.performance, the greatest victory of your life? It is. Sam is ranked

:35:47. > :35:50.pretty high. The win in Russia was a massive win for me and I hope to use

:35:51. > :35:55.it and push on from here, you know. I love playing Davis Cup. I love

:35:56. > :35:57.playing for my country and it shows in the performances. There were

:35:58. > :36:01.times when you were really up against it, particularly the fourth

:36:02. > :36:07.set when you came back from a break down. Did you always believe you had

:36:08. > :36:12.a chance against somebody with a powerful weapon as that serve? I

:36:13. > :36:17.think I did. I played him in the past and I beat him in tough sets. I

:36:18. > :36:21.knew I had give myself a break. At one point in the third and fourth,

:36:22. > :36:29.he was serving unbelievable I could hardly get near him. I dug in well

:36:30. > :36:35.and held serve which was key. It didn't make any sense because you

:36:36. > :36:42.couldn't get anies break points and -- any break points and suddenly you

:36:43. > :36:47.get some in a you row? It was a great win. I played well. I dug in

:36:48. > :36:52.and I gave myself a chance and in the end it work. And how do you see

:36:53. > :36:56.the tie going now? If the doubles goes well tomorrow, you might get

:36:57. > :37:06.Sunday off? That would be nice. Maybe stick one of the support staff

:37:07. > :37:11.in. The Bryan brothers are a great team. I back Andy to do the job

:37:12. > :37:16.against Sam on under. If it comes to it, I will be ready again to play.

:37:17. > :37:19.We are going to bring in your captain, are Leon Smith, the man who

:37:20. > :37:23.made one of the best selection decisions of all time. I know you

:37:24. > :37:27.have got so much time for what James has done in Davis Cup in the past

:37:28. > :37:31.and I am sure you were one of the ones in the stadium who believed he

:37:32. > :37:36.could win this match? That's why he got pick at the end of the day. I

:37:37. > :37:40.don't want to take any credit whatsoever, it is down to James. I

:37:41. > :37:45.just sit there. He put in an amazing effort and I'm very proud of him. He

:37:46. > :37:50.looked like he was staring at defeat there, but he came back strongly and

:37:51. > :37:54.he kept believing in himself. We kept talking about trying to be the

:37:55. > :37:59.aggressor, trying to be the boss on the court, when he stepped up and

:38:00. > :38:02.got more offensive, he won a lot of the points when he put Querrey on

:38:03. > :38:06.the back foot. Maybe when he was down a little bit, he was being too

:38:07. > :38:09.passive, but that's the great thing about how brave he has been today.

:38:10. > :38:16.He has been courageous and he stepped up and that's what counts.

:38:17. > :38:21.He looks a lot fresher than you. You look emotionally drained. Give us an

:38:22. > :38:26.idea of what goes into captaining a side? Thank you for your compliment!

:38:27. > :38:32.You are sitting there and obviously sometimes I look calm. Maybe you I

:38:33. > :38:36.showed a little bit more today, yeah, I mean, every point counts and

:38:37. > :38:40.you are going through the emotions. You are trying to stay there calm,

:38:41. > :38:46.but inside your mind is ticking over and over drive and you have got to

:38:47. > :38:50.make sure when he comes towards you that you don't look hacked off or

:38:51. > :38:53.too excited either, you have got to control your emotions. That's

:38:54. > :38:58.tiring, but you are staring at tennis balls for hours on end and

:38:59. > :39:02.you are not taking your eye off the ball. It is tiring. It is a great

:39:03. > :39:10.start to the week. We are designed for this, 100%, but last April, we

:39:11. > :39:13.were 2-0 down and we came back. So having learnt from that, we won't

:39:14. > :39:18.sit there and think this tie is over, not when you start by playing

:39:19. > :39:21.the best doubles team who graced the court. There is a lot of tennis to

:39:22. > :39:27.be played here and we will make sure we will play it properly. And no

:39:28. > :39:35.reason to change your selection for tomorrow? That's a conversation I

:39:36. > :39:39.will have with the guys tomorrow morning. We will see how the team

:39:40. > :39:43.feels about it. Well done and well done to you, James. A memorable

:39:44. > :39:47.moment in British tennis history. Well played. Thank you very much.

:39:48. > :39:52.Well, of course, there are questions about the doubles. Of course, that

:39:53. > :39:56.will go on, but boy, James seems so relaxed. Just such a huge win. Is he

:39:57. > :40:00.just still in the zone or is that just the way he is? I think that's

:40:01. > :40:03.the way he is. He is a relaxed guyment he loves playing Davis Cup

:40:04. > :40:07.and he is very confident in himself. We talked in comment free about

:40:08. > :40:11.James having self-belief even when he was battered after the first set.

:40:12. > :40:16.He knows his level is good and he knows that he raises his game for

:40:17. > :40:21.Davis Cup and that's what he did today. He raised it in a big way

:40:22. > :40:26.compared to his week to week level. Come on James, let's push on. Let's

:40:27. > :40:35.take those performances and wins which you have in Davis Cup. He is a

:40:36. > :40:39.top 20 player and now he is top 50. Fantastic win away from home. I

:40:40. > :40:44.can't tell you how good that win is. It is fantastic for Ward. But on the

:40:45. > :40:48.other side of the coin, there is Sam Querrey who has got a lot of

:40:49. > :40:52.questions to answer and for Jim Courier. This will be a tough

:40:53. > :40:55.evening for them? There will be a lot of questions asked at the end of

:40:56. > :40:59.this match about his decision to play on clay as well. He will get

:41:00. > :41:02.stick about that because it turned out to be the wrong decision and he

:41:03. > :41:07.has got a lot of work to do tonight because his team are in an almost

:41:08. > :41:12.impossible situation with Andy Murray staring at them on the last

:41:13. > :41:16.day even if they win the doubles. Let's take you through the most

:41:17. > :41:21.important parts of a match. We were sitting here on this final game,

:41:22. > :41:26.15-30 thinking gosh, you don't want to let Querrey back into the match.

:41:27. > :41:31.You still want James to be so positive to keep hitting, but we

:41:32. > :41:37.wondered would he have the belief to do it? But boy, he brought out one

:41:38. > :41:42.bullet shot after another. Look at that! He was so loose at the end of

:41:43. > :41:46.this match. He was swinging from the hills and he was hitting the ball so

:41:47. > :41:50.well. When the points were extended, he was looking unbeatable. It was

:41:51. > :41:54.when he was making early errors in the rallies and the concentration

:41:55. > :41:57.was dipping, but when he was playing well, when he was loose and openly

:41:58. > :42:04.beating Querrey from corner to corner and making the big man move,

:42:05. > :42:09.there only looked like one win arer -- winner and Ward was in great

:42:10. > :42:14.form. He hit more forehand winners than

:42:15. > :42:18.Querrey. Particularly the first set, there were a lot of errors and

:42:19. > :42:24.everything and how he was able to turn it around. It is all about

:42:25. > :42:28.momentum, isn't it? He has got the momentum, but he has to win the last

:42:29. > :42:34.point and this is the toughest point to win and he needed to stay strong.

:42:35. > :42:41.To stay positive. He did. He is an inexperienced five set player, but

:42:42. > :42:52.such a good five set player. Look at the win! That's a very muted

:42:53. > :42:57.response, but I suppose Leon thinks, "I have still got work to do." We

:42:58. > :43:01.thought that James would do well and we thought he could be competitive,

:43:02. > :43:05.but I think all of us felt that Querrey was going to come out the

:43:06. > :43:09.winner of this one, but boy, when you can produce tennis like that. He

:43:10. > :43:13.is capable of beating many of them in the Davis Cup and other

:43:14. > :43:18.tournaments as well. Look at that, what an opening day. Great Britain

:43:19. > :43:25.is two up. It is the doubles. We are not sure who is playing as far as

:43:26. > :43:30.Britain is concern, but it will be the Bryan brothers and then the day

:43:31. > :43:34.with the second singles, but as far as the doubles are concerned, Andy

:43:35. > :43:38.could really have a day off if he wanted it, but he is a bit of a

:43:39. > :43:41.competitor as well? He is. He is probably the most competitor that I

:43:42. > :43:45.know. I think it would be smart for him not to play on the Saturday, for

:43:46. > :43:49.the sake of the team, for Great Britain, for the way he will feel on

:43:50. > :43:54.Sunday. They are not favourites in the doubles match anyway. Why not,

:43:55. > :44:01."Let's go for the last day and get the win against Sam requester

:44:02. > :44:04.Querrey?" -- Sam Querrey?" We will have more tomorrow at 8pm on BBC

:44:05. > :45:07.Three. Bye-bye. Last year, the earth opened up

:45:08. > :45:11.and swallowed a man as he slept. Horizon finds out

:45:12. > :45:46.what causes sinkholes. So the wait is over, and the weight

:45:47. > :45:51.is very much about to go on. Put your pinnies on,

:45:52. > :45:53.grease those tins, put on your comfortable

:45:54. > :45:55.baking mules, in honour of a batch

:45:56. > :45:59.of brand-new home bakers. Mary Berry's

:46:00. > :46:01.been sharpening her knives and Paul Hollywood has been

:46:02. > :46:03.sharpening his hair quiff, with the aid of some cow gum

:46:04. > :46:05.and whale grease. They're about to be unleashed

:46:06. > :46:08.on this baker's dozen. That's right. For 2013, we've got 13 new bakers,

:46:09. > :46:15.but only one will emerge victorious. Welcome to the

:46:16. > :46:17.Great British Bake Off. This year,

:46:18. > :46:21.over 10,000 people applied, It's a bit like waking up

:46:22. > :46:25.on Christmas Day, coupled with potentially that

:46:26. > :46:29.I was going to have to do an exam. 13 of the best home bakers from

:46:30. > :46:34.across the country I hope I just don't get

:46:35. > :46:38.too fazed by things, and remember that this is something

:46:39. > :46:41.that I do, literally, all of their baking skills

:46:42. > :46:48.will be put to the test. I don't want to be the guy

:46:49. > :46:50.that everyone is screaming at on the telly,

:46:51. > :46:53."Why on Earth did you do THAT?!" And this year's judges,

:46:54. > :46:56.Paul and Mary... Four hours to do this is enough.

:46:57. > :47:00...are taking the Bake Off... Yes, I'm not very organised at

:47:01. > :47:04.this point. ..to a whole new level. It'd be good if I could say

:47:05. > :47:08.that I wasn't scared of Paul, but that wouldn't

:47:09. > :47:11.really be the truth! I'm more nervous

:47:12. > :47:13.about Mary, actually. Every week, they'll set

:47:14. > :47:17.three brand-new challenges... ..designed to reveal who has

:47:18. > :47:23.the natural baking instinct... I don't know to what extent

:47:24. > :47:25.one should whisk. Wanting to pull out all the stops,

:47:26. > :47:30.or squirrels, in my case. Slightly doolally. These are

:47:31. > :47:43.optimal conditions for Bake Off. Those who fall short

:47:44. > :47:46.will have to leave. It'll be a tragedy

:47:47. > :47:48.if his head falls off. Those who excel... Success!

:47:49. > :47:52...will be named star baker. Please. Please.

:47:53. > :47:56.But who will make it through... If my bottom is dry today,

:47:57. > :48:00.all will be right with the world. Don't be sad.

:48:01. > :48:04.You've got such a long way to go. Please don't break,

:48:05. > :48:10.please don't break. Which do you think is the one

:48:11. > :48:47.who's travelled furthest? Sooty's done

:48:48. > :48:49.the most walking around. What we're seeing here on the screen

:48:50. > :48:53.is the very first indication we've ever have had of the detail

:48:54. > :48:56.of the pet cat's life Billy travelled on this excursion

:48:57. > :49:01.up to the farm and back, but Sooty may not have ranged

:49:02. > :49:04.quite as far, I think the fact

:49:05. > :49:09.that we have got 50 GPS collars on cats in this village

:49:10. > :49:12.is fantastic, because one cat's behaviour

:49:13. > :49:15.will influence another's, undoubtedly, when they're sharing

:49:16. > :49:17.the same physical space. Thomas is active three times. After

:49:18. > :49:24.dawn, then in the early afternoon and then a big burst of activity

:49:25. > :49:28.in the evening - 10, 11 o'clock. and so many things

:49:29. > :49:32.could have gone wrong. They don't seem to have done so,

:49:33. > :49:34.so far, so I'm really pleased

:49:35. > :49:36.and really excited about what we'll see over the

:49:37. > :49:39.next week and what data we'll get. It'll be nice to see, as we go

:49:40. > :49:42.over the whole week, we're not seeing just after one day,

:49:43. > :49:47.won't it? Oh, yeah. So what are the cats

:49:48. > :49:51.actually getting up to In order to find out, the BBC's

:49:52. > :50:04.Research and Development Department that will capture

:50:05. > :50:16.a cat's eye view of our world. Today, Dr Sarah Ellis

:50:17. > :50:18.and Alia Sheikh, who developed the camera,

:50:19. > :50:23.are out to test a prototype. That's clever.

:50:24. > :50:33.Is it recording now? Yes. Is it? The cat's welfare

:50:34. > :50:37.is the first priority. The cameras are very light

:50:38. > :50:40.and will be fitted onto quick release collars,

:50:41. > :50:45.in case they get caught up. We'll give him a bit of fuss.

:50:46. > :50:49.That's lovely. You're a good boy.

:50:50. > :50:55.Such a good boy. Are you wanting to go outside and we

:50:56. > :51:08.can see what you do with that camera? And then connected to the

:51:09. > :51:23.GPS collars, so that we can see exactly

:51:24. > :51:27.where cats are and exactly

:51:28. > :51:33.what they're looking at. We've chosen 14 cats

:51:34. > :51:37.to put cameras on and soon, the world through

:51:38. > :52:14.their eyes starts to unfold. In a unique project for natural

:52:15. > :52:19.history, for the very first time, we have created underground

:52:20. > :52:23.burrows for burrowing animals, most complex

:52:24. > :52:29.and most ambitious ever built. We can watch badgers, rabbits,

:52:30. > :52:34.water voles and moles behaving entirely naturally and this

:52:35. > :52:38.is offering us a unique insight into the secret lives

:52:39. > :53:24.of these subterranean species. This is everything

:53:25. > :53:30.that we wanted from our warren.
