:00:34. > :00:42.Good evening and welcome to our coverage of the Davis Cup, live from
:00:43. > :00:46.San Diego in Southern California. Yesterday we hoped for a promising
:00:47. > :01:05.start, and it turned out to be a great day for British tennis.
:01:06. > :01:20.That really could not have come any better for Andy Murray.
:01:21. > :01:28.We are on for a fifth set finale. James Ward is producing a fantastic
:01:29. > :01:32.performance for his country year. That is one of the best victories
:01:33. > :01:38.you are ever going to see in the Davis Cup.
:01:39. > :01:42.What a day, and Britain are on the verge of a historic victory. The
:01:43. > :01:49.last time they beat the United States in the Davis Cup was 79 years
:01:50. > :01:57.ago. Two outstanding singles wins for Great Britain yesterday, and
:01:58. > :02:01.today it is the doubles. The Bryan brothers who have 15 Grand Slam
:02:02. > :02:09.titles are up against Colin Fleming and Dominic Inglot. There is no Andy
:02:10. > :02:13.Murray in the doubles, he is rested for his singles match against Sam
:02:14. > :02:19.Querrey tomorrow. That match in just a moment. But first let's look back
:02:20. > :02:24.to yesterday. Ross and John are here again. You just have to look at
:02:25. > :02:29.James Ward and the manner in which he won that match. He looks down and
:02:30. > :02:35.out in the middle of the match, struggling with his form, but he
:02:36. > :02:39.came through so strong. He played in men's tennis, finishing with power,
:02:40. > :02:44.passion, exactly what you would expect in the Davis Cup. There
:02:45. > :02:49.aren't that many players with a good record like his. And talk about
:02:50. > :02:53.saving your best for the Davis Cup. He has certainly done that. None
:02:54. > :03:00.more impressive and important as yesterday. Let's hear from the
:03:01. > :03:09.captains. First, Leon Smith. He did a great job. He was brave enough to
:03:10. > :03:12.turn it around, that is what he did. He took a toilet break after the
:03:13. > :03:18.first set when the first set hadn't gone well. He needed to express
:03:19. > :03:22.himself a little bit more, and that is what we talked about when we went
:03:23. > :03:26.into the little toilet break, he just had a look at himself in the
:03:27. > :03:30.mirror and said, you don't get many opportunities in an environment like
:03:31. > :03:35.this to express yourself, so go out there and do that, and as the match
:03:36. > :03:39.went on, he did that well. He really dominated in the fifth set, he made
:03:40. > :03:44.a lot of noise and moved his feet better. It is great to see someone
:03:45. > :03:50.turn it around like that. We had a lot of chances in that match to turn
:03:51. > :03:55.it around, a lot of opportunities that came and went, and you just
:03:56. > :03:59.can't give anybody that many chances and expect them to do anything but
:04:00. > :04:06.get better. It is like getting out of jail free. It was a momentum
:04:07. > :04:12.match. You have to put a stake in the heart when you have the chance.
:04:13. > :04:18.Jim has got to put a positive spin on it, of course he has. But the
:04:19. > :04:24.Davis Cup, it does bring the best out of James Ward. Is it the fact
:04:25. > :04:30.that he has Leon there? He is a team player. Some players play above
:04:31. > :04:36.their rankings in the Davis Cup, and some go the other way, sometimes top
:04:37. > :04:40.players choke. When you have Andy Murray in your team, that rubs off
:04:41. > :04:45.as well, and he plays the big points well in the Davis Cup. And Sam
:04:46. > :04:52.Querrey, the experienced player, he choked. It is as simple as that. But
:04:53. > :04:55.James Ward had to hang in there. So, no Andy Murray, and I don't
:04:56. > :05:05.think we are surprised by that, are we? Yes, we thought he would have a
:05:06. > :05:08.rest day today for him. Sam Querrey had a long match yesterday, and
:05:09. > :05:13.Murray had a shorter one, said he wants to be as fresh as possible for
:05:14. > :05:18.tomorrow. And Dominic Inglot, you know Colin Fleming very well, but
:05:19. > :05:21.Dominic Inglot, a big moment for him, but he has experience.
:05:22. > :05:29.Quarterfinals at the Australian Open. And the US Open also. He has
:05:30. > :05:33.played some big matches on big occasions. He is a dangerous player,
:05:34. > :05:41.one of the biggest serves in the world. Raw power, and no player
:05:42. > :05:46.likes to play Inglot. He can make you miss returns, hit you in the
:05:47. > :05:53.chest. He has everything. The Bryans won't look forward to this.
:05:54. > :06:05.And talking of the big serve, is he really nicknamed Dom the Bomb? He
:06:06. > :06:11.is! No one has done more on a double scored than these two. And they are
:06:12. > :06:16.local boys. They know how to get the crowd involved, they are very
:06:17. > :06:21.patriotic. Yesterday, the crowd was very muted, they didn't have much to
:06:22. > :06:29.cheer about. Even when Querrey was winning. But I think they will get
:06:30. > :06:37.going today, and I think it will be very tough. They will be fired up,
:06:38. > :06:46.the Bryan brothers, they are to zeroed down, -- 2-0 down, they have
:06:47. > :06:50.nothing to lose. And they have a point to prove. It is a different
:06:51. > :06:54.sort of pressure. It looked as though it was going to be 1-1 at the
:06:55. > :07:00.end of yesterday, but it wasn't, so it has shifted. Now they will think,
:07:01. > :07:03.we have to win, but there is less pressure on them because they are
:07:04. > :07:07.now in second place, looking down the barrel of a gun, almost thinking
:07:08. > :07:17.they are not going to win because Andy beat Querrey tomorrow. I think
:07:18. > :07:19.that favours the Bryans. They will have less pressure on them, and they
:07:20. > :07:29.will want to put that record straight. They will want to put a
:07:30. > :07:33.stop to the losses. And as far as Colin and Dominic are concerned,
:07:34. > :07:38.they have nothing to lose, and Leon will be on the court. He knows how
:07:39. > :07:48.to inspire this team. He does. He has done a heckuva job. There is no
:07:49. > :08:01.pressure, 2-0 down. Why not just open the shoulders up and have a
:08:02. > :08:05.go? The kids have turned out in force at the weekend, and that will
:08:06. > :08:09.be good for the tournament. Plenty of ways you can get in touch
:08:10. > :08:18.with us, through our website or via Twitter. So many ways to get
:08:19. > :08:26.involved, and we would love to hear from you. Here come the Brits up
:08:27. > :08:32.against the Bryans, and we can join our commentators.
:08:33. > :08:41.Good evening. What a day. Because they are identical twins, Brian
:08:42. > :08:55.plays left-handed, Mike Bryan plays right-handed.
:08:56. > :08:59.That is Dominic Inglot to the left, Dominic Fleming to the right. --
:09:00. > :10:53.Colin Fleming. Good serving from Bob Ryan to start
:10:54. > :11:01.this must win match for the USA. -- Bob Bryan. This is in the world
:11:02. > :11:05.group first round. Britain hasn't been at this stage since 2008, so
:11:06. > :11:10.wonderful opportunity to maybe make the quarterfinals. As you can see,
:11:11. > :11:17.three matches have already been decided. Germany have taken an
:11:18. > :11:21.unassailable lead against Spain, France against Australia and
:11:22. > :11:25.Switzerland against Serbia. The other matches are tight, as you can
:11:26. > :11:32.see. Italy have just taken the lead against Argentina. 2-1 in the match
:11:33. > :12:07.which will decide who plays the winners of this one.
:12:08. > :12:18.Well, for Dominic Inglot, a nervous start, a couple of double faults.
:12:19. > :12:47.Get them out early! The only way is up for the 27-year-old.
:12:48. > :12:54.It never really seemed on to hit the smash there. He did well to get the
:12:55. > :13:30.return back. Tough now with three break points.
:13:31. > :13:42.That wasn't a bad second serve at 15-40. He is quite a character, this
:13:43. > :13:43.guy, and he has certainly got a lot of self-confidence, which I think
:13:44. > :13:55.that serve just mildly demonstrated. But at the third time of asking, the
:13:56. > :14:04.Americans get the break, and are ahead early in this doubles rubber.
:14:05. > :14:11.Inglot had to do the rookie speech at the dinner the other night,
:14:12. > :14:18.apparently, and he spoke for 15 minutes! Normally about 90 seconds
:14:19. > :14:23.is a good duration for that speech. I think I was about half that, and
:14:24. > :14:24.John, who was my captain for my debut, can vouch for how badly I
:14:25. > :14:35.did. It wasn't that bad! From what I hear, Dominic has
:14:36. > :14:41.already picked up a few after-dinner bookings. Just a little insight
:14:42. > :14:44.there into his confidence. Not afraid to step up to the plate as it
:14:45. > :15:30.were. The Bryan brothers setting the tone
:15:31. > :15:38.for the Mac. -- match. Fleming and Murray did play together once in
:15:39. > :15:43.juniors back in 2001, but these two, the Bryan brothers, for a formidable
:15:44. > :15:51.team. The finest doubles pairing of all time. Let's hear from them.
:15:52. > :15:56.It is a huge part of our career, something we are excited about. We
:15:57. > :16:03.have always dream about playing the Davis Cup since we were little. We
:16:04. > :16:06.have been working hard to try to get back on track. We had a couple of
:16:07. > :16:10.disappointing losses last year, which leave a bad taste in your
:16:11. > :16:15.mouth, but we are looking to write those runs from last year, and put
:16:16. > :16:24.in a good performance. This doubles match will be pivotal. We are going
:16:25. > :16:30.to try to get our game plan. We love the dirt, we have played some of our
:16:31. > :16:39.best Davis Cup tennis on clay. It is kind of a hometown tie for us, we
:16:40. > :16:45.from Southern California. Quite a team. When they won Wimbledon last
:16:46. > :16:51.year, they held all four Grand Slam titles at the same time, and the
:16:52. > :16:52.Olympic gold medal. They have won the Davis Cup, as well, in their
:16:53. > :17:06.career. It was interesting there that they
:17:07. > :17:11.talked about how much they love the dirt. We will always baffled about
:17:12. > :17:23.Jim Courier's choice to put the venue on clay. I wonder if they were
:17:24. > :17:26.thinking it would be 1-1, and it was the Bryans' influence that tipped
:17:27. > :17:37.the thoughts towards the clay surface. Maybe Colin said to go
:17:38. > :17:46.left, and Don went left. Were you surprised that Colin didn't put
:17:47. > :17:53.Dominic in to bat first? Colin doesn't like serving first.
:17:54. > :18:02.Normally, the opening server is the server that will serve at 5-4, so
:18:03. > :18:06.you get one break of serve, you should try to arrange it so that the
:18:07. > :18:12.better server serves the set out at 5-4. But Dominic is thought to have
:18:13. > :18:25.the stronger serve. For people who aren't in the know,
:18:26. > :18:29.Colin Fleming is your regular doubles partner. We are expecting
:18:30. > :18:31.your inside secrets if you don't mind during the course of this
:18:32. > :18:57.match. Including all those intricate hand
:18:58. > :19:00.signals, Ross. Let us know what they all mean, or is that just which
:19:01. > :19:07.restaurant you are going to the dinner. I wish it was! Sometimes it
:19:08. > :19:11.gets confusing. On a serious point, when you are a completely new team,
:19:12. > :19:19.there must be a lot of preparation. Strategies. That is what makes it so
:19:20. > :19:23.tough for Colin and Dominic, because everyone thought Andy was going to
:19:24. > :19:27.play the doubles, and nobody thought that we would be in this situation
:19:28. > :19:35.where it was 2-0, and Andy doesn't want to play the doubles, so this is
:19:36. > :19:39.a fresh team. The start of the match is so key, and when you are playing
:19:40. > :19:44.the Bryan brothers, don't let them get ahead early. They are such a
:19:45. > :19:46.fast team when they are serving in front, and they have hardly lost a
:19:47. > :19:58.point on serve so far. You are allowed 25 seconds. They
:19:59. > :20:17.take about eight. That is an emphatic service game.
:20:18. > :20:21.4-1 to the Bryan brothers. You will have been on the other side of the
:20:22. > :20:27.net. Identical twins, but do they have different games? They are very
:20:28. > :20:32.different. Mike Bryan who plays on the ad court is the better return.
:20:33. > :20:39.He plays all the break points. Doesn't serve as well, and is often
:20:40. > :20:46.the leader, the more outspoken. I wouldn't say he is more cocky, but
:20:47. > :20:54.he is in your face more, pumped up, trying to rattle the opponents,
:20:55. > :21:00.whereas Bob Bryan, best serve in the game of doubles, so reliable. You
:21:01. > :21:04.have just seen three aces there. He likes to go with the firepower, hit
:21:05. > :21:11.big, take risks. So they complement each other very well. Bob
:21:12. > :21:17.left-hander with a very big serve, and Mike, the right-hander who takes
:21:18. > :21:22.all the break points. Mike is a lot louder, he likes to stir things up.
:21:23. > :21:27.Huge promoters of the game of doubles, huge promoters of the game
:21:28. > :21:30.of tennis, and very, very, very popular over in the States,
:21:31. > :21:35.especially when it comes to the Davis Cup.
:21:36. > :22:20.Britain leading 2-0 in the tide, but 4-1 down in the opening set here.
:22:21. > :22:27.That wasn't a very good volley there. He didn't get his feet right,
:22:28. > :22:32.and to be honest, it wasn't the right place to hit that anyway. It
:22:33. > :22:52.was into his body, and he tried a very awkward shot.
:22:53. > :22:59.You feel like this is a crucial game for Inglot as a first server who
:23:00. > :23:05.prides himself on having a massive weapon in his big serve. You don't
:23:06. > :23:08.want to lose your first two opening service games. Fleming will be
:23:09. > :23:16.really encouraging him. That wasn't far away from the back
:23:17. > :23:25.of Colin's head! That was a lucky return. Those are
:23:26. > :25:10.the ones you love. That was a good effort. Good service
:25:11. > :25:13.from Inglot there, it is not only about the server in doubles. The
:25:14. > :25:23.partner has to read the game, shift your movement around the net.
:25:24. > :27:07.Good recovery in the game from Great Britain, and Inglot the debutante.
:27:08. > :27:17., yes, great point from a British point of view. Best point of the
:27:18. > :27:22.match so far. Excellent. A good, solid volley from Colin. And he is
:27:23. > :27:57.very quick at the net. So close to the net on the volley,
:27:58. > :28:06.almost over it. Getting the ball away so well. Makes the chip lob
:28:07. > :28:09.Inglot tried it on the first point, but you hope is not discourage --
:28:10. > :28:15.discouraged. That is a good volley from that
:28:16. > :28:38.position on the court. We said he was settled a bit better
:28:39. > :28:43.now, but Inglot just played that awful first game, and down a break,
:28:44. > :28:47.whether you have settled down or not, that is the set gone against
:28:48. > :28:52.the Bryan brothers. They cannot afford to play a bad service game,
:28:53. > :28:56.but Inglot has a bit more rhythm on the return, volleying a bit better.
:28:57. > :29:04.And Colin will help Inglot very well. You know about playing good
:29:05. > :29:07.doubles, it's the partnership, how you communicate. Over five sets it
:29:08. > :29:11.is very rare to play well for the whole match. You will have up and
:29:12. > :29:15.downs, one player will be better than the other, one player will mess
:29:16. > :29:19.up numerous times, but you have to do help your partner through the
:29:20. > :29:24.tough times, and as you say, Dominic looks a lot better, more comfortable
:29:25. > :29:29.and he will love the atmosphere. You could look at it as it is a great
:29:30. > :29:36.experience for his first Davis cup match, but it's not a match you are
:29:37. > :29:38.easing your way into Davis Cup when you play the Bryan brothers first
:29:39. > :29:47.match. It is not easy, that is for sure.
:29:48. > :30:10.New balls. Colin Fleming to serve to stay in the first set.
:30:11. > :30:21.That is just out, just long. Again, some hesitation between the two.
:30:22. > :30:27.Look how close Dominic is to the net, about half a foot away from the
:30:28. > :31:08.net, so the lob is effective against Dominik as well.
:31:09. > :31:17.Oh, yes! That is quite brilliant double from the British pair, using
:31:18. > :31:24.the full width of the court. -- brilliant doubles.
:31:25. > :32:04.Well, they must have collectively hit thousands of lobs in their
:32:05. > :32:10.career, the Bryan brothers, and they don't get many wrong. I don't think
:32:11. > :32:15.Inglot needed to be as close to the net. It was such a deep volley, to
:32:16. > :32:18.go a foot above the net, it was unnecessary to do it. They were
:32:19. > :32:22.still odds-on favourite to win it. Just have to be careful with that,
:32:23. > :32:35.because they are picking it pretty quickly on how close he is.
:32:36. > :33:43.This is the thing when you are playing the best team in the world,
:33:44. > :33:53.and you are behind, you feel you have do press more. First set in the
:33:54. > :33:56.bag for Bob and Mike Bryan. They will be looking to bounce back in
:33:57. > :34:01.Davis Cup, because for all of their success in the Grand Slams and the
:34:02. > :34:09.Olympic Games, they have lost their last two Davis Cup matches, against
:34:10. > :34:13.Brazil, and also to Serbia in the quarterfinal.
:34:14. > :34:20.Before that, virtually unbeatable. That is since their Davis Cup debut
:34:21. > :34:29.in 2003. A fresh start, that is what they
:34:30. > :34:36.have got to be thinking, the Scottish pair. Absolutely, they need
:34:37. > :34:40.to start again, think tactics, think about the game plan they would have
:34:41. > :34:44.had initially, back to basics. If you look at Bob and Mike Bryan they
:34:45. > :34:49.have done the basics so well in that set. Made a lot of returns, first
:34:50. > :34:55.serves, played down the wing -- middle, kept the ball in play and a
:34:56. > :34:59.bit up and down from the British boys. Dominic Inglot was nervous at
:35:00. > :35:03.the start, then a tough break at the end, good shots from Mike Bryan.
:35:04. > :35:06.They can get away from you so quickly if you don't hang in with
:35:07. > :35:10.them. You need to stay close throughout the sets, and we will
:35:11. > :35:17.repeat that through the match, but they didn't do it from the start. I
:35:18. > :35:21.agree, totally. Dominic Inglot is understandably nervous, but again,
:35:22. > :35:27.he is going outside of his comfort zone a bit because of who is across
:35:28. > :35:30.the net, and that is the problem, when the play against a great
:35:31. > :35:34.singles or doubles player, the tendency at the start is to perhaps
:35:35. > :35:38.try too much and then consequently you make too many errors. He just
:35:39. > :35:41.has to be confident in his own ability not to overplay until they
:35:42. > :35:45.get in the match. Admittedly they will have to play at their best to
:35:46. > :35:50.win, but don't try too much. It looked like he was edgy and going
:35:51. > :35:57.for too much. I know that's the way he plays anyway, but he has to
:35:58. > :36:02.temper it a little bit. Colin Fleming is more experience, so his
:36:03. > :36:07.job is to calm matters down, it's the best of five, a long way to go.
:36:08. > :36:15.Once again they are flooding the court. They didn't get it right a
:36:16. > :36:19.couple of times yesterday. Credit to the Bryan brothers, not just this
:36:20. > :36:24.match, through their whole careers. It is easy to have some surprise
:36:25. > :36:27.losses, and it's more easily done than in singles, but they are the
:36:28. > :36:32.targeted team, the one everybody wants to beat, but still they manage
:36:33. > :36:39.to win the Grand Slams, the Olympics, Davis Cup. Just to say
:36:40. > :36:51.that that Italy and Argentina score is... Oh, they have flipped it over.
:36:52. > :36:56.Ross and I were talking about it earlier, and I think if we are going
:36:57. > :37:00.to win this match, perhaps the Argentina team would be the one we
:37:01. > :37:05.would have most like to have played in the next round, which may happen,
:37:06. > :37:09.obviously, but now Italy are looking pretty firm favourites to come
:37:10. > :37:16.through it. Argentina would be at home, and Italy would be away. That
:37:17. > :37:23.is nasty. In April, so presumably on clay. It will be quicksand. Gallons
:37:24. > :37:27.more water on the court than we are seeing here. They will be playing
:37:28. > :37:34.with the heaviest balls than you can -- that you can possibly get. Well,
:37:35. > :37:37.they are not there yet, but isn't it lovely to think about the
:37:38. > :37:42.possibility of a quarterfinal? Lots of statistics knocking around, to
:37:43. > :37:47.remind you that Britain have not beaten the USA since 1935 in the
:37:48. > :37:51.Davis Cup, and not since 1933 on clay. I have a better one for you in
:37:52. > :38:07.a moment. Lovely skill from all the players
:38:08. > :38:14.during the rally, but decisively from Colin Fleming. Unless I am
:38:15. > :38:30.mistaken, the USA have only lost once before -- have only won 8-0
:38:31. > :38:35.down to win the tie -- 2-0 down. You have to go back to 1934 against
:38:36. > :38:40.Australia. That shows the class of the win against Russia last year
:38:41. > :38:48.from the British team, to come back and win 3-2. Not easy to do that in
:38:49. > :38:56.the Davis cup, that is for sure. -- Davis Cup.
:38:57. > :39:07.OK, a slight opening here. The last time that Bob hit the body serve to
:39:08. > :39:14.Colin, so let's see if he does it again.
:39:15. > :39:21.Colin's stance is effectively giving him the tee, saying, I know you are
:39:22. > :39:29.coming to the backhand on the big points. More often than not it is a
:39:30. > :40:19.high shop. -- a high-quality shop. -- shot.
:40:20. > :40:25.What is Colin like as a partner? You will hear a lot of compliments from
:40:26. > :40:31.me because we're still playing together, but obviously he's a
:40:32. > :40:35.fantastic doubles player, great guy. He's a joy to be around with on
:40:36. > :40:39.the court. He is really complimentary and support you
:40:40. > :40:44.through thick and thin. -- supports you.
:40:45. > :40:50.And he plays well on big occasions. He does well in the Grand Slams.
:40:51. > :40:54.Phenomenal Davis Cup record, and that's important, because you want
:40:55. > :41:03.trust in your partner in the big matches.
:41:04. > :41:11.Couple of overheads in the first two points of the game. 9-1 in his Davis
:41:12. > :41:15.cup record, Colin Fleming. Played one singles match, the rest in
:41:16. > :41:28.doubles. Not a bad winning percentage.
:41:29. > :41:39.That is to service in a row that Inglot hit at three quarters -- two
:41:40. > :41:43.serves. Knowing him prior to the match he would have had thoughts of
:41:44. > :41:49.blowing off the court with a big serve, but you need a plan B, and it
:41:50. > :42:01.is good to see. He has gone back to plan a belting it.
:42:02. > :42:23.I think he broke the speed: one. -- the speed gun on that one.
:42:24. > :42:28.Class from Fleming. Not many better around the net than Colin Fleming.
:42:29. > :42:52.He has proved that in huge ways after the last couple of years.
:42:53. > :42:58.You talk about the art of moving forward on the volley, and they do
:42:59. > :43:02.it so well. You always talk about keeping moving with your feet on the
:43:03. > :44:13.volley. Attack the ball, don't let it play you.
:44:14. > :44:18.As both of the guys here will tell you, sometimes the best place when
:44:19. > :44:36.presented with a drive like that is straight down the middle.
:44:37. > :44:41.Half a chance to flick it over the head of Bob Bryan. That is twice
:44:42. > :45:01.they have had 30-30. That was unlucky from Dominic
:45:02. > :45:11.Inglot. He was stretching them. Going with serve in the second set.
:45:12. > :45:15.Jim Courier looking super smooth again. Obviously did not respond to
:45:16. > :45:19.our comments about his suit. He did get a bit tetchy yesterday, in a
:45:20. > :45:25.grumpy, because Sam Querrey had blown it for him. Had a problem with
:45:26. > :45:29.Russell Fuller asking him a normal question, and then he said why don't
:45:30. > :45:35.you start it again with a better question? We might let you off
:45:36. > :45:39.because your team is getting a beating, but next time, maybe just
:45:40. > :45:48.let him do his job, thanks very much? I wonder what he would say
:45:49. > :45:53.when he does his interviews at the Australian open. Imagine if somebody
:45:54. > :45:59.said that, live on air. He does those in the middle of the court.
:46:00. > :46:03.Yes, that I would like to see. Sorry, Jim, I don't like that
:46:04. > :46:09.question, please ask it again in a different way.
:46:10. > :46:15.Smith, going to the beach look today. The young captain, surprise
:46:16. > :46:20.choice the sun when he got the job but he has responded by taking
:46:21. > :46:24.Britain through the divisions -- a surprise choice for some. And in the
:46:25. > :46:32.world group for the first time in five years. Camera to make the
:46:33. > :46:35.quarterfinals? If we don't do it today, we have another chance
:46:36. > :46:41.tomorrow -- can Britain make the quarterfinals?
:46:42. > :46:52.That is gorgeous. Again, we see the hands from Fleming. Not afraid to
:46:53. > :46:56.practice this a lot during training. A lot of trick shots, touched drop
:46:57. > :47:11.shots. He so effective when he plays them on the court, because he knows
:47:12. > :47:17.he can pull it off. Got away with that. This is a poor first volley.
:47:18. > :47:22.Tried to bounce him over, got away with it, the reflex of -- reflex
:47:23. > :47:28.volley. That is a way to bounce it. You need
:47:29. > :47:44.a ladder on that one. Colin Fleming will be telling his
:47:45. > :47:45.partner where he is going to serve, whether to take the middle, cover
:47:46. > :48:06.the line. Will that always be the server who
:48:07. > :48:10.dictates? It is the server's choice. You rarely disagree. If you
:48:11. > :48:14.are struggling on serve, you might ask your partner if he sees anything
:48:15. > :48:22.else, is there a play I am missing? Should we change it up? But
:48:23. > :48:37.generally it is the server 's call and you live and die by his choice.
:48:38. > :48:46.They have built some momentum in the second set. Much better. They have
:48:47. > :48:51.had a couple of scores of 35 and 30, and they have had a look at it, and
:48:52. > :48:53.that does not mean they have been blown away. It gives you
:48:54. > :49:11.encouragement. You have lost the game, but it gives you encourage.
:49:12. > :49:12.You are getting closer. That is a big chance, and a good return of
:49:13. > :50:17.serve. Bob Bryan finding the rhythm again.
:50:18. > :50:27.Speeding through the game. If you want to get in touch do it via
:50:28. > :50:31.#bbctennis. It was busy last night when James Ward was playing. David
:50:32. > :50:40.asked if Andy Murray played doubles regularly, what ranking would he be?
:50:41. > :50:48.The top five. The top four. It's always a good discussion, if you put
:50:49. > :50:52.two really good singles partners together against an established
:50:53. > :50:57.doubles team, who would win? It's a very good question. Federer and an
:50:58. > :51:04.adult, up against the Bryan brothers, it is -- Nadal where the
:51:05. > :51:20.Bryan brothers can hold around. Federer, Djokovic, they are all very
:51:21. > :51:24.good. Tomas Berdych. If you look at their records, Federer winning the
:51:25. > :51:30.Olympics as well. Something we can talk about over the course of the
:51:31. > :51:34.next game. How does a good serve in doubles different -- differ from a
:51:35. > :51:53.good one in singles? He did well there. Using the short
:51:54. > :51:57.volley to great effect so far. That is a very good question. It is more
:51:58. > :52:01.about variety, keeping the percentage is high. You need to make
:52:02. > :52:10.a high percentage of first serves, but also vary it.
:52:11. > :52:21.You would call that a hospital log. -- lob. Your partner will say, don't
:52:22. > :52:26.throw up lobs like that at somebody who is six foot five. You don't want
:52:27. > :52:45.to be putting ones like that. Very good movement around the net
:52:46. > :52:49.from Colin Fleming. And also with your server, you don't want the
:52:50. > :52:53.opponent to have a read on it, you have to keep moving, change position
:52:54. > :53:00.and pace. So from the middle, from wide. Play to the weaknesses. There
:53:01. > :53:06.are so much variety of thinking. Over the course of the match,
:53:07. > :53:15.because it is so dominant, you have to keep the variation going.
:53:16. > :53:22.The same on the return, set up your partner. It's not all about winners
:53:23. > :53:28.from the back of the course. There are no egos in doubles. Set them up
:53:29. > :54:12.and try and finish it off and then you look good.
:54:13. > :54:21.That is an excellent cross there. Made up his mind early. And when you
:54:22. > :54:25.cross there, you have to cross as your opponent hits the volley, so
:54:26. > :54:31.it's difficult for him to direct it down the line. It has to be perfect
:54:32. > :54:44.to get such an easy volley down into the open court.
:54:45. > :54:52.That was a classic example, Colin just making the move across.
:54:53. > :55:05.Yes, maybe just a slight adjustments Ian Fleming move. -- slight
:55:06. > :55:06.adjustment seeing Fleming move. A big serve from Inglot at break point
:55:07. > :56:08.down. Good hold. Fleming was destructive
:56:09. > :56:13.at the net, finishing when he had the opportunity, taking it well of
:56:14. > :56:16.the court. When you play against somebody like the Bryan brothers to
:56:17. > :56:19.cross their serves around so much, you don't know where they will
:56:20. > :56:23.serve, but do you make up your mind before that if you will reach it,
:56:24. > :56:26.you will go down the line to keep them honest, or do you wait till the
:56:27. > :56:38.ball comes to you before you decide? Take That. Good question. I like to
:56:39. > :56:43.do it in the first game of the match. I think I will hit a couple
:56:44. > :56:44.down the line, so I don't mind hitting it down the line, but just
:56:45. > :57:00.don't cross too often. It's a pity. That is a big point
:57:01. > :57:07.right there. It was set up so well for Colin Fleming. Colin is starting
:57:08. > :57:10.to return really strong. When he starts getting into a rhythm, there
:57:11. > :57:20.are not many better returners in the game.
:57:21. > :58:06.And they both went in, he will love that. An opportunity here for Colin.
:58:07. > :58:29.Another great return from Fleming. Couldn't quite back it up.
:58:30. > :58:39.The problem there is it came out of the centre of the racket.
:58:40. > :58:45.He actually had almost too much time on the ball. It was right in his
:58:46. > :58:58.hitting zone. He should have made that forehand.
:58:59. > :59:11.And from 15-30, the Bryans Colbourne. -- hold on. If you are
:59:12. > :59:17.just joining us, Britain after 2-0 up. If they win this doubles, they
:59:18. > :59:20.are into the quarterfinals, and even if they lose, Murray will have the
:59:21. > :59:28.first opportunity tomorrow against Sam Querrey to steal the tie. The
:59:29. > :59:30.other big talking point in doubles in recent years has been the scoring
:59:31. > :59:44.system, which has changed on the tour. You play no ad, so how has the
:59:45. > :59:48.deciding point gone down? At the start, people weren't fond of it.
:59:49. > :59:55.They thought it was a bit of a lottery, and it used to be the
:59:56. > :00:03.best-of-3 sets, and the third set turns into ten point tie-break.
:00:04. > :00:11.People didn't like it. Doubles as a very historic game, a lot of class.
:00:12. > :00:17.But now, looking back, it has been an excellent change from the ATP
:00:18. > :00:21.Tour. Fans really enjoy it, it is exciting and sporadic, it is
:00:22. > :00:26.explosive. People get nervous on these big sudden death points, and
:00:27. > :00:28.it makes people enjoy the five set part of doubles which we have at
:00:29. > :00:55.Wimbledon and Davis Cup even more. Introducing that third set
:00:56. > :00:59.tie-break, you also know Richie Wellens how long the match will
:01:00. > :01:05.last, which helps with scheduling on the high-profile courts. -- you know
:01:06. > :01:12.how long the match will last. He wasn't going to make the same
:01:13. > :01:39.mistake as in the previous game. Quite often, John, when players in
:01:40. > :01:42.general are a little nervous, you move a little bit earlier, and the
:01:43. > :02:11.line has been open on a few occasions. It has.
:02:12. > :02:28.Now there is an air of energy about the court, in the whole arena, you
:02:29. > :02:54.sense the chance to put this set to bed.
:02:55. > :03:11.A good return, and there's the break. 5-3 up now, in the second
:03:12. > :03:15.set. The world number one team. Colin there looked in trouble on a
:03:16. > :03:17.few of those, once he missed the first serve, the second serve wasn't
:03:18. > :03:21.going through the court quite enough, and the Bryans really just
:03:22. > :03:50.teeing off on the ball. There you see the partner again
:03:51. > :04:15.helping the server out. Serving and staying back. You see
:04:16. > :04:20.that sometimes with all on his forehand side. You don't see that
:04:21. > :05:07.much on the deuce side. He was trying to go to much on that
:05:08. > :05:12.ground stroke, overplayed and because it is against the Bryans.
:05:13. > :05:19.They are frightening when they are on a roll. Mike and Bob Ryan, two
:05:20. > :05:28.sets to love lead against Fleming and Inglot. Now the Davis Cup team
:05:29. > :05:35.have to come from 2-0 down if they are to do it here, and that is a
:05:36. > :05:41.very, very tall order. A final place at stake this weekend in San Diego.
:05:42. > :05:49.Britain 2-0 up in the tie as things stand. The winners will play the
:05:50. > :05:55.winners of the Italy-19 Tina match. These are all the ties going on at
:05:56. > :06:05.the moment. Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek against the Netherlands.
:06:06. > :06:15.Canada down 2-1 against Japan. Germany have got it done. The old
:06:16. > :06:19.man, Tommy Haas, still going. Philipp Kohlschreiber, with his
:06:20. > :06:24.beautiful one-handed backhand is. France have just dropped a single
:06:25. > :06:32.set in taking another saleable 3-0 lead against Australia. -- and
:06:33. > :06:46.unassailable 3-0 lead. Belgium have got one back against
:06:47. > :06:54.Kazakhstan. Switzerland are through and into the quarterfinals.
:06:55. > :07:16.Serbia without Djokovic or tips on a -- Tipsanovic that weekend. When you
:07:17. > :07:23.get to the world group, it is quite simple. Yes, the best 16, and it is
:07:24. > :07:30.very exciting. We finally have a shot here. If we win this match,
:07:31. > :07:35.quarterfinals likely against Italy, and it is a match that would be
:07:36. > :07:45.tough, but it is winnable. And then presumably, Switzerland. Imagine
:07:46. > :07:49.that! It would be at home, because we played Switzerland in Geneva a
:07:50. > :07:59.few years back. Wasn't it Andy Murray's debut? It was his first
:08:00. > :08:05.single match, he got well beaten by Stanislas Wawrinka in a very
:08:06. > :08:12.attractive aircraft hangar. We are getting ahead of ourselves. A home
:08:13. > :08:29.semifinal in the Davis Cup against Switzerland? Feder and Wawrinka --
:08:30. > :08:42.Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka, big names.
:08:43. > :08:50.John McEnroe was the greatest double player I ever saw in my lifetime, it
:08:51. > :08:56.is fun to debate, but for me, he was a nightmare to play against. He had
:08:57. > :09:07.everything, he was unbelievable. There has been a little bit of aggro
:09:08. > :09:14.between McEnroe and the Bryans. Discussing whether the fans only
:09:15. > :09:43.wants to watch singles matches, and the Bryan brothers firmly disagreed.
:09:44. > :10:11.I think it was Bjorn Borg, the first great to stop playing doubles. I
:10:12. > :10:16.sometimes blame him for the demise of the top players playing doubles.
:10:17. > :10:25.Jimmy Connors played a little bit here and there.
:10:26. > :10:36.But John, you played singles and doubles, every day. Everybody did,
:10:37. > :10:42.but then Bjorn Borg decided not to, and the other players started to
:10:43. > :10:46.look, and think, maybe he will do better because he is resting more,
:10:47. > :10:51.and everybody else started to follow suit and stopped playing, which was
:10:52. > :10:55.a great pity. As you said about the spectators, in this audience here
:10:56. > :10:57.there is an example. 80% of them only play doubles. They like to
:10:58. > :11:52.watch doubles. Colin expecting the return to go
:11:53. > :12:26.across court. They were tempting him with the line, and he obliged.
:12:27. > :12:33.Good effort from Dominic Inglot, good serving there. Quarterfinalist
:12:34. > :13:43.at the U.S. Open and this year's Australian Open.
:13:44. > :13:56.They have served Inglot well to the deuce court. They switched about
:13:57. > :14:05.halfway through last year. To be a deuce court player.
:14:06. > :14:12.Amazingly, the Bryan brothers, with all their success and fame, people
:14:13. > :14:16.trying to work up tactics, when they have a tough record or a losing
:14:17. > :14:22.record against opponents, they sometimes switch on returning sides.
:14:23. > :14:25.Against Daniel Nestor, you will see the right-hander playing on the
:14:26. > :14:28.right court and left-hander playing on the left court. That is a good
:14:29. > :14:48.shot of them there. It is quite unusual for right and
:14:49. > :14:54.combinations to play this way. It is. They have to be so effective
:14:55. > :14:59.when they have second shots, they have the forehand in the middle of
:15:00. > :15:05.the court and can be really destructive, both of them.
:15:06. > :15:13.It's funny how the game has moved on in that way. In the olden days, a
:15:14. > :15:18.left-hander would always play on the left of the court, it wasn't even
:15:19. > :15:22.under discussion. It gives you that extra wingspan, if you like. The
:15:23. > :15:25.theory was you could swing the theory was you could swing them out
:15:26. > :15:28.too easily on the backhand side, but now players can hit winners of the
:15:29. > :15:31.backhand from wide with the equipment and the strength. In the
:15:32. > :15:52.old days, you couldn't do that. Yes, with the two forehands down the
:15:53. > :15:53.middle, it is a frightening volley, two big forehands in the middle of
:15:54. > :16:13.the court. Took sat on the right beautifully
:16:14. > :16:18.there. He hit that second shot superbly. Don't try and do too much.
:16:19. > :16:39.As you commented in the last game, John.
:16:40. > :16:48.A great volley. And John, as captain, how do you choose who to
:16:49. > :16:53.playing doubles? With four nominations, to take two of them up
:16:54. > :16:58.by a doubles team, it leaves you with two singles players. You are
:16:59. > :17:03.always worried, because if there is an injury to a singles player, you
:17:04. > :17:07.have banked on a doubles team. It is not an ideal way of doing it. But in
:17:08. > :17:16.the case of the USA, it is almost a banker. It is a banked rubber. If
:17:17. > :17:21.you don't have an established pair that you can guarantee on a whim, it
:17:22. > :17:26.is tough to take that risk. Because if Murray was injured or James Ward
:17:27. > :17:31.got injured in the opening day, one of these two would have to play a
:17:32. > :17:39.big match. Exactly. The format can be a bit dangerous in some ways. A
:17:40. > :17:45.little more sunshine today in San Diego, down on the West Coast. The
:17:46. > :17:52.view that the baseball stadium, this temporary clay court set up in left
:17:53. > :17:55.field. They fit more spectators in as well. Talking to people last
:17:56. > :18:01.night, they were complimentary of the atmosphere and the setting out
:18:02. > :18:04.there. Certainly the Bryan brothers doing a good job here of getting the
:18:05. > :18:25.locals up for it. There is the man who could well seal
:18:26. > :18:26.the tie tomorrow. Very professional performance yesterday against Donald
:18:27. > :18:45.Young. A little bit fortunate there, the
:18:46. > :18:51.Americans. Lunge -volley, he did well to stab that. He just sort of
:18:52. > :18:54.stabbed at it, and it ended up being a very good short volley which is
:18:55. > :19:05.tough for Inglot to get anything on it. They're reflex is are so quick
:19:06. > :19:08.at the net. They narrowed the angle so well and force you to hit into
:19:09. > :19:24.small areas all the time with their movement.
:19:25. > :19:32.That is the conclusion of not having played doubles together, the
:19:33. > :19:34.confusion. Just because you haven't played together, you don't know each
:19:35. > :20:00.other's bearings as well. He didn't mean that, did he? I
:20:01. > :20:04.didn't think so. He looked like he meant it, the way he strolled around
:20:05. > :20:10.afterwards. Side spin, back spin, full stretch. It looks good, he will
:20:11. > :20:21.take it. Of course he will! You will say that he meant it.
:20:22. > :20:48.I thought he had broken his string there. Not surprised if you work it
:20:49. > :21:09.that hard. Those shots are pure power.
:21:10. > :21:15.They are having some good rhythm on the server now, breezing through
:21:16. > :21:32.games far quicker than he was at the start of the match.
:21:33. > :21:41.Very good doubles from the British pair. So often with two but the net,
:21:42. > :21:45.it becomes so much more favourable to win the point, so you want to
:21:46. > :22:06.stamp your authority when you have two at the net.
:22:07. > :22:13.That's an interesting technique! Haven't seen that one before. If you
:22:14. > :22:22.can swing with two rackets, it is easier with one. That is one way of
:22:23. > :22:27.beating the Bryan brothers, get three rackets out there! They are
:22:28. > :22:51.going to send it off to be re-strung, I think.
:22:52. > :23:00.Did you used to have a regular partner, John? I didn't, no. There
:23:01. > :23:03.wasn't really that much prize money around, you just played with
:23:04. > :23:10.friends, people you thought you would get on well with. I played
:23:11. > :23:17.with my brother sometimes. Didn't you win the Australian Open?
:23:18. > :23:35.Knotting doubles, no. Didn't have a regular partner.
:23:36. > :23:43.I suppose it is when you have such a good player and huge part of it is
:23:44. > :24:13.getting the forehand around, back down the court.
:24:14. > :24:32.It could have hit him in the head. I think it did! No, it was the arm.
:24:33. > :24:54.Heated at Mach five there. A great move. Well done. Here you
:24:55. > :24:59.have the contrast with the power of Inglot and the solidity of Fleming.
:25:00. > :25:13.Making so many returns in court right now, it builds pressure.
:25:14. > :25:28.Break point for Britain. This is the first one, isn't it?
:25:29. > :25:42.Two really effective doubles plays there, the second into the body.
:25:43. > :25:54.Yes, back in it! I have seen it many times, when you hit a second serve
:25:55. > :26:03.to Fleming's backhand, you are in trouble. The rest is history.
:26:04. > :26:07.The first break for Britain in this doubles match. I'm afraid the early
:26:08. > :27:02.night is a write-off. 4-2. You just know that there is going to
:27:03. > :27:03.be a retaliation from the best team in the world, and that is just what
:27:04. > :27:35.is happening. Are a situation. -- much needed in
:27:36. > :28:04.that situation. Well, they got away with it. That
:28:05. > :28:11.was a huge gamble that Dominic Inglot took to stretch for the first
:28:12. > :28:20.volley. Three times, to have a full stretch. -- two of them at full
:28:21. > :28:24.stretch. You realise how often the Bryan brothers hit through the
:28:25. > :28:41.middle and he did well to Take That. -- to Take That one.
:28:42. > :28:45.They force you to play well all the time, make you come up with more
:28:46. > :28:56.shots. They have saved five of the eight
:28:57. > :29:30.break points they have faced, but this is a key one.
:29:31. > :29:52.Fantastic first volley from Fleming. Look how deep he gets that.
:29:53. > :29:58.Great hands again from Fleming, taking the pace out of it, realising
:29:59. > :29:59.if he had hit the volley deep it would have been another forehand
:30:00. > :30:23.coming at him. Crucial game. Great hold, that is. Not just the
:30:24. > :30:30.break point, but from 0-30 previously.
:30:31. > :30:35.They have done well to manoeuvre themselves back in the match,
:30:36. > :30:40.because after two sets it looked like it would go away quickly, but
:30:41. > :30:44.they have dug in, like James Ward yesterday after the first set. Same
:30:45. > :30:49.sort of thing, you looked at the match and thought it would be very
:30:50. > :30:52.quick. The Bryan brothers, when they get going, so quick between the
:30:53. > :30:56.points they are a frightening sight. Quite frankly, I thought this
:30:57. > :31:06.would be a quick third set, but all credit to the Brits are coming back.
:31:07. > :31:10.There are a lot of ifs and buts tonight, but I think if Andy Murray
:31:11. > :31:19.had got the nod, would things be much different? I would have loved
:31:20. > :31:23.to have seen it. Colin and Andy, it would have been interesting for them
:31:24. > :31:26.going up against the power on the serves and there would have been a
:31:27. > :31:29.lot of returns on their feet. It would have been a very interesting
:31:30. > :31:37.match. This is still an interesting match now. We shouldn't give up on
:31:38. > :31:40.the boys, but with Murray out there as a leader, and with a return of
:31:41. > :31:53.serve and a big serve, it would have been an interesting match.
:31:54. > :31:59.The biggest difference is the amount of returns going in court. Both
:32:00. > :32:10.Inglot and Fleming getting about 80% of them back.
:32:11. > :32:21.Good reflexes. Colin would have switched sides, that is what they
:32:22. > :32:28.played in Montreal and in the last Davis cup match against Croatia.
:32:29. > :32:58.Colin used to play on the opposite side previously.
:32:59. > :33:14.Well, they prolong the set, but now a big moment for the Davis Cup
:33:15. > :33:18.debuted -- debuted on -- debutant. 27-year-old Dominic Inglot will
:33:19. > :33:24.serve for this set to pull Britain back into this rubber. There is
:33:25. > :33:26.David MacPherson, used to work with them for years, a former top doubles
:33:27. > :33:39.player. You sense this is the perfect time
:33:40. > :33:43.for Inglot to justify his nickname. Dom The Bomb. He has a huge first
:33:44. > :34:28.serve. Nice serve from Inglot, going into
:34:29. > :34:30.the body, increasing the target, more chance of making it. Putting
:34:31. > :35:07.them in at 135 mph. Yes, an ace down the centre. Perfect
:35:08. > :35:39.timing to bring up two set points. Well, his real claim to fame in life
:35:40. > :35:43.so far is that he was Paul betony's double in the film Wimbledon. I'd
:35:44. > :35:47.tell you what, if he leads the comeback we will be talking about
:35:48. > :35:54.something else. -- Bettany. Well done. Good effort. That worked out
:35:55. > :36:04.very well after a shaky double fault on the first point, but after that,
:36:05. > :36:07.excellent. Often with the big servers, that is the mark of when
:36:08. > :36:15.you are feeling good, the rest of the game falls into place. Very good
:36:16. > :36:19.set from the British boys. Sometimes you wish the match had started in
:36:20. > :36:40.the third set. Took them two sets to get ready but they played well in
:36:41. > :36:52.the third. Game on. Colin Fleming went to Stirling University and had
:36:53. > :36:55.a business degree there. Dominic studied at the University of
:36:56. > :36:59.Virginia, and we do see a lot of players take the college route in
:37:00. > :37:04.the United States. Is that valuable for up and coming tennis players? I
:37:05. > :37:09.think it is a very smart move for players not bursting onto the scene.
:37:10. > :37:15.If you are Donald Young, 15 or 16, winning tournaments at that age 15,
:37:16. > :37:19.it's not too smart to go to college, but you get great practice, great
:37:20. > :37:24.matches, a team atmosphere, free training. It is expensive to play
:37:25. > :37:28.tennis, and that is a great idea, especially in the States. Stirling
:37:29. > :37:36.University, not sure, but the states, very smart. It is back in
:37:37. > :37:42.vogue now. 15 or 20 years ago it was something people dead, then for five
:37:43. > :37:46.or six years it went out of fashion almost. Very few good players going
:37:47. > :37:53.through the college route. Now it has come back in. John Isner is one
:37:54. > :37:57.who stayed right till the end and he benefited greatly. He talks about
:37:58. > :38:01.how the pressure situations in college tennis, when you have the
:38:02. > :38:11.coaches, who are mostly not cases, they are in your face -- not cases.
:38:12. > :38:16.The crowd get behind you. It is a good training block, really, before
:38:17. > :38:24.you come out on the circuit. In this country, the players of 17 or 18, of
:38:25. > :38:29.not the highest level yet, they go full-time when there's a chance to
:38:30. > :38:34.improve your game, play more tennis, develop in the warmer conditions in
:38:35. > :38:39.America. In the practice conditions it's more enjoyable to play in the
:38:40. > :38:48.sunshine. Not just that, broaden your horizons. He did go there to
:38:49. > :38:51.get a business degree, which has given him worldly wise experience
:38:52. > :38:57.and he has something to fall back on the end of his career. That helps in
:38:58. > :39:03.huge ways when you have a crowd of 7000 people. You are used to meeting
:39:04. > :39:08.different people on different occasions. It is so hyped up and you
:39:09. > :39:26.have big crowds and a lot of pressure.
:39:27. > :39:40.I think the graphic was getting a bit ahead of itself it is not too-1
:39:41. > :39:44.yet. -- 2-1. That has given you the Eastern Time start time, the East
:39:45. > :39:47.Coast of America. I don't know why they do that. I know a lot of tennis
:39:48. > :39:55.revolves around the United States but we are not all-American. 7pm
:39:56. > :40:01.tomorrow evening ins -- is the start of the reverse singles.
:40:02. > :40:05.Tomorrow's coverage here, you can watch that on the red button from
:40:06. > :41:06.7pm, and on BBC Three from 8:20pm. The Brits had to be start here. The
:41:07. > :41:11.one thing they will try to do is get up in the set early and put it to
:41:12. > :41:19.bed. Attack on the serve, no sloppy points. In doubles and one point can
:41:20. > :41:29.be critical in losing the break, losing your own serve.
:41:30. > :41:34.There will be conscious that when they have played matches in the
:41:35. > :41:36.Davis Cup that have gone to five sets, they have lost them both. This
:41:37. > :42:15.is a key set. He looked like he was odds-on to win
:42:16. > :42:20.the rally, there, and there, but it keeps coming back. It is just the
:42:21. > :42:27.drills they have done over and over again. The ball is always Hitachi
:42:28. > :42:32.fast, from crows proximity -- heat at you fast, from close proximity.
:42:33. > :42:36.They are belting the ball from an inch or two at the net right at them
:42:37. > :42:55.and they hit them back with reflexes. Frightening.
:42:56. > :43:03.In those positions, if Colin shows some on the little finger, that
:43:04. > :43:09.would be to serve to the left side of the box with the little finger.
:43:10. > :43:25.You don't want to get that wrong, do you?
:43:26. > :43:33.A bit slow with the feet there, Colin.
:43:34. > :43:37.They need to get going now. It has come around quickly, this break
:43:38. > :44:15.point. Another crunching serve from Inglot,
:44:16. > :44:23.and Fleming will be furious to Mr Varley. The USA with an early break
:44:24. > :44:30.-- will be furious to have missed the volley. Snatched at it, did not
:44:31. > :44:35.have to take such a swing. It was the after effect of missing the one
:44:36. > :44:42.before. Doing his best to make amends, but then swiping it away.
:44:43. > :44:53.Watch how quick the Bryan brothers will play here. There is Wayne Brian
:44:54. > :45:08.-- Bryan on the left, he will be the loudest man in the audience.
:45:09. > :45:15.There you see a closed fist which means they will stay, if you see the
:45:16. > :45:17.open kissed it means he will run across the court and cross. -- the
:45:18. > :45:41.open kissed. -- fist. It is uncanny, really how the Bryan
:45:42. > :45:47.brothers can speed through the service games after getting the
:45:48. > :45:59.break. They psychologically batter you. They keep you down.
:46:00. > :46:03.There we saw the open hand, meaning he was running across the court.
:46:04. > :46:33.With a double fault, not much use. 3-0. It is amazing how quick they
:46:34. > :46:41.are, you blink and it is 3-0. It was two minutes ago. Don't tell me those
:46:42. > :46:47.cardboard cutouts are different. You could have saved on production costs
:46:48. > :46:53.and done just one. They haven't got Jim's sunglasses. What do you think
:46:54. > :46:59.about the sunglasses look? I suppose you could get away with that, it is
:47:00. > :47:04.the suit and tie I struggle with. He looks more like security. He will
:47:05. > :47:10.have a role to play tomorrow, that is for sure to get his number one
:47:11. > :47:14.player, Sam Querrey up to any sort of level that will keep him close to
:47:15. > :47:20.Andy Murray on the basis of yesterday. He has a hard job ahead
:47:21. > :47:24.of him tonight, just the confidence. Sam Querrey was absolutely batted
:47:25. > :47:30.yesterday and now he is going up against one of the top players in
:47:31. > :47:34.the world -- battered. Has to win to stay in the match, Jim Courier will
:47:35. > :47:40.have to do one heck of a job will stop we heard from Colin Fleming
:47:41. > :47:42.last night. He said Sam Querrey was devastated. He said he had never
:47:43. > :47:50.seen a player that distraught after a loss. Down in the dumps will be an
:47:51. > :47:58.understatement. You would be, too-1, 4-2 in the set, hometown. --
:47:59. > :48:27.-- 2-1. He has to flip that turn around and
:48:28. > :48:37.make yourself a hero, not just a Californian era, national hero. He
:48:38. > :48:40.will just have to go out there and go for it, which he will have to do
:48:41. > :48:46.against Andy Murray. No question about it. It looks to me like
:48:47. > :48:48.somebody had the hiccups while painting the line. It looks a little
:48:49. > :49:20.wonky to me. Perfectly timed cross, just as Colin
:49:21. > :49:23.was about to play the backhand volley, he moved, no chance to
:49:24. > :49:28.direct the other way. He crosses perfectly. Diagonal movement, making
:49:29. > :49:49.sure he takes the volley out in front.
:49:50. > :49:57.Big John is in, good friends with Sam Querrey. I'm surprised he stayed
:49:58. > :50:12.for the tie. Good to see him supporting. -- Isner. Good work from
:50:13. > :51:34.Fleming on serve to get Britain on the board in this set.
:51:35. > :51:40.The reason they play that formation is to give the opponent a different
:51:41. > :51:49.look, change the variety, make them doubt the return. Cause confusion.
:51:50. > :52:00.Must have gone so quick. It's amazing, you think you are back on
:52:01. > :52:04.it. Then a minute and a half later you are sitting down thinking, well,
:52:05. > :52:10.we are another game down. One less game to be able to catch up through.
:52:11. > :52:14.Very difficult to slow them down between points. I don't know how you
:52:15. > :52:17.can do it, but it seems like the constant rush. They are on top of
:52:18. > :52:27.you all the time. What a record they have. Six
:52:28. > :52:33.Australian open titles, three French, three Wimbledons, four US
:52:34. > :52:37.opens, the Davis Cup, and the Olympic men's doubles gold medal in
:52:38. > :52:42.2012. What do you think their ambition is now? To play as long as
:52:43. > :52:47.possible? They have pretty much done everything they can in the game.
:52:48. > :52:54.They play a lot of music now. They have their own band. They play a lot
:52:55. > :52:59.in the studio. Exceptional players, and you do not win the amount of
:53:00. > :53:03.Grand Slams they have if you do not have the competitive edge and
:53:04. > :53:30.desperation to win. But they have other enjoyments, which is good.
:53:31. > :53:35.One thing they have not one is the finals at the O2, so that will be a
:53:36. > :53:57.big goal of theirs. That might be the best return of the
:53:58. > :54:04.match, because that was an excellent serve. A single-handed backhand, and
:54:05. > :54:06.you think it will be weak, but returned inside the baseline at over
:54:07. > :54:19.130 mph, that serve. Got away with it. This one here who
:54:20. > :54:38.almost hit him. Did well to get away with that
:54:39. > :55:05.point. Sometimes you have the feeling when
:55:06. > :55:11.the ball is in the air that you need to just take care of that one. Tough
:55:12. > :55:17.with the blue sky outdoors, the big stadium. Hitting the side spin,
:55:18. > :55:31.making sure you get it in. Two break points against the British
:55:32. > :55:50.pair. These are match points, basically.
:55:51. > :56:14.Well done, Inglot. He dug in there and he's done very well.
:56:15. > :56:53.Well, credit to the Bryan brothers, after losing the third set they are
:56:54. > :56:56.5-1 up with two breaks of serve. And in a few moments they will serve for
:56:57. > :57:01.the match. You can see what it means to them as well.
:57:02. > :57:07.Chest pump -- not quite the trademark chest pump, but we will
:57:08. > :57:18.see it soon. Steady! The umpire just doing a few
:57:19. > :57:48.running repairs on the net. Yesterday, everything dropped over,
:57:49. > :58:16.but today, those to fight back. What a pity there, he did the hard
:58:17. > :58:44.work, and then the much easier shot on the forehand was missed.
:58:45. > :58:59.Books! He didn't see the umpire there. He almost got belted there.
:59:00. > :59:03.You can see their that Mike... The umpire has come down. Controversy
:59:04. > :59:09.here. The ball was definitely out when he looked at the mark. The
:59:10. > :59:14.problem is that the Bryan brothers thought that the point was still
:59:15. > :59:20.going, they wanted to play it safe. In case it was still in. Look how
:59:21. > :59:28.quickly the umpire ran onto the court, and he almost got belted. The
:59:29. > :59:33.umpires come down very quickly because they want to get the Mark
:59:34. > :59:43.Wright. Any delay, and it could be affected by something else.
:59:44. > :00:16.It is probably not going to matter. Match point for the Bryan brothers.
:00:17. > :00:39.And they are back in it! The United States, the Thai is alive going into
:00:40. > :00:46.the final day. -- the tie. Perhaps a little premature with the
:00:47. > :00:50.celebratory music, but we will give them one across the weekend. Well
:00:51. > :00:57.done to the number one doubles team, getting it done in four sets.
:00:58. > :01:04.They responded well in that fourth set. They certainly did. The third
:01:05. > :01:07.set got away from them, but it was straight back to business at the
:01:08. > :01:15.beginning of the fourth. Once they get going and they get in front, it
:01:16. > :01:22.is very difficult to stop. From a British point of view, the debut for
:01:23. > :01:27.Dominic Inglot. You can only learn from these sort of experiences.
:01:28. > :01:32.Exactly, and he is going up against the best. They won the third set,
:01:33. > :01:42.they were not embarrassed out here by any means. A few of his volleys
:01:43. > :01:45.were a little naive in terms of basement is, taking big swings and
:01:46. > :01:50.stuff and errors at the wrong time, but they will learn from a
:01:51. > :01:54.performance like this. He will only play weaker teams in the future,
:01:55. > :02:03.that's for sure. He won't come up against the Bryans many times. And
:02:04. > :02:06.it takes us to the first of the reverse singles tomorrow, and a
:02:07. > :02:12.chance for Andy Murray to seal the tie.
:02:13. > :02:17.SUE BARKER: Absolutely, Jonathan. Andy Murray against Sam Querrey, on
:02:18. > :02:24.the red button from 7pm in the evening, and then we will move over
:02:25. > :02:31.to BBC Three at 8.20. Andy Murray against Sam Querrey, he leads 5-1 in
:02:32. > :02:39.the head-to-head. Today, that was some match from the Bryans. They
:02:40. > :02:46.needed to lift the American team, and they are used to doing that.
:02:47. > :02:52.They are. It was a packed house in San Diego, and they warmed to the
:02:53. > :02:58.Bryans. I thought they played well in the third set, Karl Boyes, but
:02:59. > :03:03.the Bryans over five sets are such a tough team to beat. A very good
:03:04. > :03:09.effort. They are the best in the world, so what Dominic and Colin
:03:10. > :03:12.have got to take away from this is, we are part of this team as well,
:03:13. > :03:16.and we know that Britain has a number of players now that can
:03:17. > :03:22.compete with the best in singles and doubles, including yourself.
:03:23. > :03:26.Absolutely. Doubles is crucial. The team that wins the doubles match 70%
:03:27. > :03:32.of the time wins the whole tie. Hopefully that won't happen here.
:03:33. > :03:37.Tomorrow looking forward, Andy B fresh, and that is the good part
:03:38. > :03:41.about having a doubles team to rest Andy on the Saturday. It was a great
:03:42. > :03:49.decision, because he will be fresh tomorrow. But using myself, Colin,
:03:50. > :03:53.Jamie Murray, Jonny Marray, all able to fill in, and a lot of them have
:03:54. > :04:00.good results. But when you come up against the Bryan brothers, it is a
:04:01. > :04:05.tough ask. They are so dominant on home soil, they feel like they are
:04:06. > :04:11.in their backyard. They have won everything, they have won the Davis
:04:12. > :04:14.Cup as well before. They really do play passionately and really lift
:04:15. > :04:21.the whole nation. And there will be a lot of people saying, why didn't
:04:22. > :04:24.they play Andy? Could have sealed this match here. But it is so
:04:25. > :04:28.important that he doesn't get injured, and it is his big match
:04:29. > :04:33.tomorrow. We have to accept that Leon Smith knows what he is doing.
:04:34. > :04:37.Yes, and Andy and Leon would have spoken about that last night. And
:04:38. > :04:45.you see that with the Swiss team today. Roger Federer and Stanislas
:04:46. > :04:51.Wawrinka both won today, and they will be rested then from the doubles
:04:52. > :04:54.for their next matches. If you play along doubles match, you are going
:04:55. > :05:00.to be tired and have wear and tear on your body, and that will affect
:05:01. > :05:03.your singles on Sunday. Brandywell have had physio treatment all day
:05:04. > :05:11.today, and will be hoping for a win. -- Andy will have had physio. And
:05:12. > :05:17.looking at the two captains, Leon is there with his shorts on, and Jim is
:05:18. > :05:24.wearing a suit, not Willie talking to the Bryan brothers. We can now
:05:25. > :05:30.hear from the Bryan brothers. Mike and Bob, very well played. You
:05:31. > :05:39.came through very strongly in the end. We played a great match against
:05:40. > :05:43.two tough players. I think it was Inglot's first Davis Cup match, and
:05:44. > :05:49.he brought it. He was bringing the big serves. We raised our energy,
:05:50. > :05:52.and took it up a notch in the fourth, and we're really happy to
:05:53. > :05:57.win this one and give our team a chance. And Bob, the crowd here in
:05:58. > :06:03.San Diego must have helped a lot. 7000 people can make a noise.
:06:04. > :06:08.Saturdays on Davis Cup are always special for us. They are all out
:06:09. > :06:16.here cheering for us. Help does raise our energy. But it does mean
:06:17. > :06:19.the tie is alive, and Sam Querrey will have to beat Andy Murray
:06:20. > :06:25.tomorrow now. What advice can you give him? Andy is a Grand Slam
:06:26. > :06:32.champ. It is going to be a tough match, Andy is so solid. You saw
:06:33. > :06:38.yesterday what he did to Dominic. -- Donald. We will stay positive, be
:06:39. > :06:43.cheerleaders on the sidelines, and just get one and see what happens.
:06:44. > :06:51.How optimistic are you, Mike? Obviously Andy is so great. He is
:06:52. > :06:55.the heavy favourite. Sam can beat anyone, he has one of the best
:06:56. > :07:01.serves in the world. He will play with a lot less pressure than he did
:07:02. > :07:12.yesterday. He might be a little off, anything can happen. We will be
:07:13. > :07:17.rooting. You were ten and zero on dirt in the Davis Cup, you are now
:07:18. > :07:22.11 and zero. Andy has beaten Sam five times. Sam
:07:23. > :07:29.has got to pick himself up somehow from that dismal display yesterday.
:07:30. > :07:34.Yes, he was disappointing yesterday. Colin said he saw him and he was
:07:35. > :07:40.dejected and down in the dumps. It is very difficult with only one day
:07:41. > :07:46.off to pick yourself up to play against a champion like Andy Murray.
:07:47. > :07:50.Everyone knows what you have to go through to beat, especially in five
:07:51. > :07:52.set in the Davis Cup when the matches on the line, it will be
:07:53. > :07:57.really tough. Ross, thank you. That is it, and we
:07:58. > :08:03.look forward to tomorrow with Andy Murray up against Sam Querrey. Can
:08:04. > :08:07.he supply this historic win and beat the United States on American soil?
:08:08. > :08:11.Join us at seven o'clock on the red button. But today it was all about
:08:12. > :08:14.the Bryans. They were just too good. Goodbye.
