:00:35. > :00:42.welcome back to our coverage of the Davis Cup in Naples of Britain
:00:43. > :00:46.against Italy. Play has only just got underway. There was a three hour
:00:47. > :00:51.rain delay and it was torrential at one point, but the sun has come out
:00:52. > :00:57.and we are going over live very shortly to see the first singles
:00:58. > :01:02.match between James Ward and Fabio Fognini. It is great to have Great
:01:03. > :01:05.Britain at this stage of the competition after so long. This is
:01:06. > :01:29.the quarter line-up over the next few days.
:01:30. > :01:45.Fabio Fognini against James Ward is underway. It is the doubles tomorrow
:01:46. > :01:50.and the singles on Sunday. That depends on what happens in the first
:01:51. > :01:56.three rubbers that have been played. These were the scenes a couple of
:01:57. > :02:00.hours ago when things looked bleak. It was a howling gale and torrential
:02:01. > :02:06.rain. It looked as though we would be fortunate to have any play at
:02:07. > :02:10.all. Andy Murray was grinning and grimacing in equal measure. He has
:02:11. > :02:16.not been well over the last couple of days, so maybe a delay might
:02:17. > :02:22.benefit him in terms of his fitness and ability to play. James Ward is
:02:23. > :02:27.behind him. Those were the scenes a couple of hours ago. But by the
:02:28. > :02:33.miracles of science we can go live to Naples... This is what happened a
:02:34. > :02:42.few moments ago. James Ward got off to a flyer. But in the third game of
:02:43. > :02:47.this first set, and this is a chord that has been specially laid right
:02:48. > :02:54.by the host for impact and anaesthetics, but you can see when
:02:55. > :03:00.we line-up that the surface of the court was cut up really badly. For
:03:01. > :03:07.the world number 13 it was not to his liking at all. I think we will
:03:08. > :03:11.see in a few moments time that people with emergency brushes came
:03:12. > :03:16.on chord to rectify the fact that it had cut up really badly. That has
:03:17. > :03:24.been rectified and these are now the live pictures. You can see that
:03:25. > :03:26.James Ward now finds himself facing two break back points. Let's go live
:03:27. > :03:51.to our commentary team. Good afternoon, everybody. It has
:03:52. > :03:56.been an entertaining start to this match, not without incident as you
:03:57. > :04:03.have seen. There has to be a debate about whether this court is fit to
:04:04. > :04:10.play. James Ward saving the first of the break points. Picking up where
:04:11. > :04:12.he left off in San Diego a few weeks ago. This is break back points
:04:13. > :04:42.number two in the game. We will have a bit of that, John.
:04:43. > :04:45.Break points down and he is playing against somebody who is very quick
:04:46. > :04:53.and the drop shot has got to be that good if you want to hit a winner,
:04:54. > :04:59.and it was. Fabio Fognini might be a bit nervous about the slipperiness
:05:00. > :05:30.of the court. It is not a bad tactic.
:05:31. > :05:38.So far James Ward's for had has been so good. In San Diego it was all
:05:39. > :05:44.over the place and then he got control of it. In these first three
:05:45. > :05:49.games he has been immaculate. It was important that he was able to get
:05:50. > :06:05.into a rhythm and that gives you confidence.
:06:06. > :06:15.Well played, James Ward. Fognini did an excellent job of keeping the
:06:16. > :06:20.rally alive. He thought he had won it with that forehand. That is a
:06:21. > :06:27.very impressive start from James Ward. Fognini is not happy with life
:06:28. > :06:33.in these corners. It is not pleasant territory. Particularly when you
:06:34. > :06:41.want to stay deep beyond your baseline. That is not going to help
:06:42. > :06:46.me. Let's go to court side in Naples and get a sense of conditions.
:06:47. > :06:51.Russell Fuller joins us. You have been observing the pictures
:06:52. > :06:55.from where you are and relaying what has been happening here over the
:06:56. > :07:01.past couple of hours. It is very damp on the cord. It is questionable
:07:02. > :07:07.whether it is quite ready for play yet. We had some farcical scenes
:07:08. > :07:14.earlier. The waters on the cover is leaked off the covers as they were
:07:15. > :07:19.removing them. They forgot to remove the water and it meant that clear up
:07:20. > :07:23.operation took one hour and 40 minutes when it should only have
:07:24. > :07:31.taken about 15 minutes and we lost about one and a half hours of play.
:07:32. > :07:36.Leon Smith is not happy and he described it as comical. But it is
:07:37. > :07:41.the same for both sides and he is now they're trying to encourage his
:07:42. > :07:47.man to even better things. He has made a terrific start to this match.
:07:48. > :07:52.It is the same for both sides, but I suppose it does benefit Britain with
:07:53. > :07:58.James Ward being a natural striker and with Fognini wanting to stay
:07:59. > :08:03.deeper. James Ward has come and take in the game to Fognini and he has
:08:04. > :08:09.played magnificently. Fognini is nervous about his footing. Take away
:08:10. > :08:18.the court, his depth and his shot selection so far has been spot on,
:08:19. > :08:24.James Ward. With Corrado Barazzutti he was trying to calm his man down.
:08:25. > :08:29.He does not want to be on the court, and justifiably because it is
:08:30. > :08:34.dangerous. You could see a couple of points where he was sliding. The
:08:35. > :08:38.referee has made a decision, and sometimes they are wrong, but he has
:08:39. > :08:44.made up his mind and they have to play and they have to get on with it
:08:45. > :08:50.and that is just the way it is. But a great start from James Ward.
:08:51. > :08:54.Beating Sam Querrey was a great result, but the standard in these
:08:55. > :08:59.first three games, it is early days, but he is hitting the ball superbly.
:09:00. > :09:19.Apart from that one! From 15-40 against a top 20 player,
:09:20. > :09:49.good work. That was just an awful error. His
:09:50. > :09:56.balance was totally off in that forehand. Mentally he is struggling
:09:57. > :10:01.right now, the Italian number one. It is important to stay on him. This
:10:02. > :10:06.is a time when all the excuses will start coming into his head. Stay on
:10:07. > :10:48.him and make him think, I do not want to be here, the court is bad.
:10:49. > :11:03.Fognini is at last on the board. He has won 12 of his 13 Davis Cup
:11:04. > :11:15.matches on clay, Fabio Fognini, it is a terrific record. On the tour he
:11:16. > :11:27.has had a thick record in the last two years, making the final of five
:11:28. > :11:35.out of six events. James Ward thinks that is out. It will not matter
:11:36. > :11:56.whether he is right or wrong because the crowd are jeering. It was in.
:11:57. > :12:03.This is the sort of point which encourages the crowd to get on your
:12:04. > :12:12.back when you dispute things. They don't like that. It is a sparse
:12:13. > :12:27.crowd. I thought it was sold out. I guess they will trickle in
:12:28. > :13:05.throughout the day, John. These you would say is Italy's
:13:06. > :13:07.banker match of the tie. If James Ward could spring a surprise, it
:13:08. > :13:39.would be hugely significant. We are seeing Fabio Fognini upping
:13:40. > :13:42.the pace a little bit, hitting the forehand a bit bigger. He was
:13:43. > :14:02.tentative at the beginning. That is trademark James Ward,
:14:03. > :14:09.picking up those mid-court balls, trading on the backhand. He needs to
:14:10. > :16:30.believe it can work for him, that play. It is game point.
:16:31. > :16:40.Good length from the Italian. That is the zone where he is sliding into
:16:41. > :16:44.his forehand. As you are sliding into that forehand, you do not feel
:16:45. > :17:10.very comfortable there. That could have affected his forehand.
:17:11. > :17:28.There is the break back. Fognini is back in the match, this first rubber
:17:29. > :17:34.of the quarterfinal. We will be with you all weekend across the BBC. On
:17:35. > :17:40.BBC One quite a bit tomorrow. Check the listings. Radio five live has
:17:41. > :17:45.coverage as well. Various additional coverage and stats on the BBC sports
:17:46. > :17:53.website or the app. You can get involved as well. Any questions you
:17:54. > :18:00.have got for us in the commentary box, we will do our best to answer
:18:01. > :18:05.your questions and you can also comment on the BBC sport Facebook
:18:06. > :18:15.page. There is the address. Like us and make us feel wanted! It looks
:18:16. > :18:19.like Fognini is standing quite far back on the return and that is
:18:20. > :18:24.forcing James Ward to do more with his first serve to get a response.
:18:25. > :18:28.We saw him miss a few first serves in that last game. That could be a
:18:29. > :18:38.crucial aspect going further into the match. In the last game when he
:18:39. > :18:44.broke Fognini, that short backswing, but he can unleash pays off that
:18:45. > :18:49.forehand and sometimes it is frightening. He is a good move on
:18:50. > :18:55.the clay. He is very light on his feet and he is slight as well. He is
:18:56. > :19:03.very balanced and that is what means he is able to hit all those shots.
:19:04. > :19:06.It is starting to fill up. People were thinking this match was not
:19:07. > :19:14.going to happen and we were thinking it was not going to happen. They are
:19:15. > :19:33.doing well to keep everybody backs. REFEREE: Sit down, please.
:19:34. > :19:37.The players are used to having people wandering around when they
:19:38. > :20:05.practice. It is not a big deal. I spoke to Chris Kermode about the
:20:06. > :20:11.ruling over letting the crowds come in when they want to. He said it was
:20:12. > :20:30.something they would try and look at. The players are used to
:20:31. > :20:39.Chris Kermode is the new boss of the ATP world tour. A former British
:20:40. > :20:45.player now in charge of the world game. It is a great promotion for
:20:46. > :20:51.him. He can have a bigger impact on the spot of tennis. He was a
:20:52. > :21:13.one-time director of the Queen's Club.
:21:14. > :21:21.Ross Hutchins is the code tournament director. That is right, are we
:21:22. > :21:44.going to get any extra special deals? He is a friend of yours!
:21:45. > :22:01.He has made two terrible errors in this game which were wild. He was in
:22:02. > :22:07.the commanding seat. On that previous forehand he was looking at
:22:08. > :22:12.the court, questioning whether there was a bad bounce. Maybe they have to
:22:13. > :22:36.change their mindsets, this is going to get ugly.
:22:37. > :22:40.He was very nonchalant with that folly. It looked like a last second
:22:41. > :24:00.thing. -- volley. I think that was dropping wide.
:24:01. > :24:08.James Ward did some very good defensive play. He is not known for
:24:09. > :24:10.that. He put up a pretty good lob, even though it was going out. At
:24:11. > :24:29.least he got it back into play. He is not sure about the server. But
:24:30. > :24:34.he accepts the call. That is what spending a lot of time with Andy
:24:35. > :24:39.Murray does for you. His presence can only be a good thing around this
:24:40. > :24:40.Davis Cup team. A positive influence on the younger and less experienced
:24:41. > :24:55.players. When you are hanging with somebody
:24:56. > :25:01.like Andy Murray, you can hang with anyone in the world. Maybe you can
:25:02. > :25:06.win a set here or there. Suddenly when you go and play Fabio Fognini
:25:07. > :25:18.you think, I can do just the same. In San Diego, Dom, you were in the
:25:19. > :25:27.team. It was a great experience. Everyone was very relaxed. It was a
:25:28. > :25:59.great setting, to be able to play in a baseball stadium, it is a one off.
:26:00. > :26:07.How quick was he there? That was a brilliant drop shot and I thought it
:26:08. > :26:15.was a winner. He is so quick to that ball. It was a great strategy, but
:26:16. > :26:20.he was so far behind the baseline. And as you said, with his speed, it
:26:21. > :26:45.is difficult to do much better than that.
:26:46. > :27:31.That was a good change up, I like that. It is important not to let him
:27:32. > :27:50.go back so deep. You have to change your opponent's mindset.
:27:51. > :28:00.There was an open court. I am not sure if he took his eye off the ball
:28:01. > :28:08.looking at James Ward. If you are anything like us, you need to see a
:28:09. > :28:10.replay. All he had to do was get that in court and he would have had
:28:11. > :28:39.the break. That is disappointing from James
:28:40. > :28:51.Ward to lose from 3-1 up and now four behind. Fognini finding a bit
:28:52. > :28:55.of rhythm after his uncertain start. John Lloyd and Dominic Inglot are
:28:56. > :29:01.here. Don you were in the team mentioned the last time out, were
:29:02. > :29:06.you disappointed to lose your place? Every single player is disappointed
:29:07. > :29:11.if they lose their place, that is natural. But at the same time I
:29:12. > :29:16.think Leon has decided to go with an experienced pairing and they could
:29:17. > :29:20.do a good job here as well. I am disappointed in myself that I have
:29:21. > :29:24.not done more to prove myself, but we still have a good chance with the
:29:25. > :29:30.doubles team we have and I wish them all the best and I think they are
:29:31. > :29:40.going to do well. Up to 20 in the world with doubles and that is an
:29:41. > :29:48.achievement in itself. He is gesturing around, I do not know to
:29:49. > :29:56.whom or what, but his captain is trying to calm him down. He is upset
:29:57. > :30:03.about something, in the crowd, but think he is losing, he is up a
:30:04. > :30:11.break! -- you would think he is losing. I think he is just the kind
:30:12. > :30:19.of guy who likes to talk to himself, say weird things, it is amazing! We
:30:20. > :30:37.played against each other in Indian Wells. He was like, la la la, almost
:30:38. > :30:44.like singing! James Ward, deep down, I don't think
:30:45. > :30:54.he can play much better than this. And she is down a break. -- he.
:30:55. > :31:03.Fognini just moves the ball around the court so well, his speed.
:31:04. > :31:19.His confidence is rattled. He was hitting winners, but now they are
:31:20. > :31:25.coming right back at him. I agree. What James was doing was enough, but
:31:26. > :31:31.now the balls are coming back, as you said, and it is causing
:31:32. > :32:02.mistakes. They are creeping into his game.
:32:03. > :32:19.Four games in a row for Italia. You do feel that he is in the prime
:32:20. > :32:28.moments of his career. It is a career-high, number 30 in the world.
:32:29. > :32:35.Let's not forget, the clay-court season is just beginning, his
:32:36. > :32:45.strongest surface. That is right. A winner on clay
:32:46. > :32:49.instant cart and Hamburg. -- in Stuttgart. He has won this year in
:32:50. > :33:18.Buenos Aires. What a return. He was not expecting
:33:19. > :33:42.that to come right back at him, that quick.
:33:43. > :33:51.Fognini playing that game in a way that suggests he wants to serve out
:33:52. > :34:02.the set. He will now have the chance to do so. Andy Murray versus Andreas
:34:03. > :34:10.Seppi ahead. Dominik, you have experience of playing both these
:34:11. > :34:17.guys. I lost two Fognini in Saint Petersburg last year. He was the
:34:18. > :34:28.number one seed, I made a swift except. -- exit. I held my own name
:34:29. > :34:33.little bit, until he started realising where I was going to
:34:34. > :34:40.serve. I still played well but it was not good enough. I think I have
:34:41. > :34:48.got a little bit of the old singles game in me! Indoors, I can still do
:34:49. > :34:58.damage, but outdoors, on clay, I would not say you will see me there
:34:59. > :35:09.too often. I watched Dominik play in the doubles in Indian Wells, a surf
:35:10. > :35:20.came down ridiculous pace. -- serve. A couple almost decapitated one
:35:21. > :35:27.person! Fognini serving for the first set. Davis Cup, across the
:35:28. > :35:42.weekend, singles today, doubles tomorrow. All weather permitting.
:35:43. > :36:16.The forecast is great for Sunday and beautiful for Monday.
:36:17. > :36:53.Fantastic footwork. Still able to put the ball right into the corner.
:36:54. > :37:07.At the 45 minutes of Davis Cup tennis on this sword on clay --
:37:08. > :37:10.sodden clay, it is set point. And he wastes no time in taking it. Good
:37:11. > :37:33.recovery after a sluggish start. Such an effective serve on clay.
:37:34. > :37:41.Even if you can get that ball back, which Ward was not able to, it is
:37:42. > :37:45.still so hard to change direction on clay and that opens up so many
:37:46. > :37:52.options, Fognini is a very good at reading that game, your movement. We
:37:53. > :38:03.have seen that a couple of times already. Is it a difficult serve to
:38:04. > :38:13.read against? A quick motion? It is very shot, but he can do so much. It
:38:14. > :38:21.is a flick of the wrist. It is very difficult to read. And not even
:38:22. > :38:28.that, some people you read their intentions more so than the serve,
:38:29. > :38:41.but he is so flamboyant, you have no idea, he will try anything. His
:38:42. > :38:47.forehand is Federer like. You have to be relaxed to generate that from
:38:48. > :38:56.such a small swing. That is why he generates so much pace, he is so
:38:57. > :39:15.fluid. And speaking of fluid! No need for that! A nice message of
:39:16. > :39:26.encouragement they have, the British fans, for Elena Baltacha.
:39:27. > :39:28.Switzerland potentially the semifinal opponents for the winners
:39:29. > :39:41.here. Stanislav Wawrinka is now the world
:39:42. > :39:45.number three, of course. Australian Open champion. Roger Federer at
:39:46. > :40:14.four. So good, quick, compact in the
:40:15. > :40:30.forehand. Sets up the point well here. It could go either way. Makes
:40:31. > :40:35.it down the line. Just looking at his eyes on that slow motion, you
:40:36. > :40:47.can see he is looking out to sea where Ward is.
:40:48. > :40:57.More problems in that corner of the court. The top left-hand corner as
:40:58. > :41:00.you look on screen. But it is papering over the cracks, I'm
:41:01. > :41:29.afraid, just coming out with the brushes.
:41:30. > :41:36.The drop shot has worked an absolute treat forward. One did not pay off,
:41:37. > :41:45.but you always get that if you try a few times. Even if it does not work,
:41:46. > :41:51.it is a tactic of making sure your opponent comes close to the
:41:52. > :42:48.baseline. He is aware that it is you other ground strokes. -- gives you.
:42:49. > :42:52.Good signs for Great Britain, the crosscourt backhand making a
:42:53. > :44:32.reappearance. A fine recovery. Ward was 0-30, that
:44:33. > :44:38.was important. It is funny, John, all those times we have owned Andy
:44:39. > :44:43.Murray for getting down on himself, psychologically does it affect him,
:44:44. > :44:52.but with Fognini, it is just amusing! From his mannerisms you
:44:53. > :44:58.would not think he is up one set. Would be fun to have a microphone on
:44:59. > :45:04.him when he is playing! We saw how aggressive he was with the amount of
:45:05. > :45:05.winners. But he is also making a lot of mistakes on the forehand, it has
:45:06. > :45:25.been a mixed act. Good British support. They have done
:45:26. > :45:35.a terrific job with this stadium. If you have seen pictures on the
:45:36. > :46:13.Internet, or just the wide shot there, it looks great.
:46:14. > :46:27.It is so strange, someone with his world ranking, who has just won the
:46:28. > :46:31.set, concealing two sloppy points, and for somebody of his class, with
:46:32. > :46:35.a lower ranked player on the run, normally that is when the top class
:46:36. > :46:45.squeeze you and give you no breathing space. But she is letting
:46:46. > :46:52.Ward regain his confidence. It is a strange performance. You would not
:46:53. > :46:59.think he has won the first set, the way he is playing right now. But
:47:00. > :47:09.there could be 12 winners in a row coming up, that is what he can do. I
:47:10. > :47:15.wonder if sometimes it just feels like, I can have a little play
:47:16. > :47:21.around, try since crazy stuff, and then he thinks, hold on, I need to
:47:22. > :47:51.knuckle down, perhaps he finds another level of focus.
:47:52. > :48:05.Right on the line from Fognini. Ward knows it.
:48:06. > :49:06.Just as in the first set, James Ward leads by a break.
:49:07. > :49:30.You have to admire the umpire. Good effort.
:49:31. > :52:40.Again, with the drop shot. And the racquet is gone from Fognini! He is
:52:41. > :52:55.picking a fight with somebody else now! Classic. Testament to the way
:52:56. > :53:05.that James Ward is raising his game. A stiff challenge and the clay, here
:53:06. > :53:20.in Italy. The Italian captain, a very solid player. He never missed
:53:21. > :53:25.from the baseline. It must be interesting, what he is saying right
:53:26. > :53:33.now. I wish we could get that microphone and understand. Is he
:53:34. > :53:40.gesturing? Don't know what he is mad at. He is still up one set. Fognini
:53:41. > :53:46.seems to be smiling and laughing also, he is up and down with his
:53:47. > :53:51.mood. I liked the way the coach on the bench gave him a bit of chat
:53:52. > :54:00.back! They know what they are dealing with. Credit to James Ward.
:54:01. > :54:04.He played a very good first set and lost, you thought he might go away a
:54:05. > :54:10.little bit in the second, but he has come back strong. He is attacking
:54:11. > :54:18.the second serve of Fognini. Back in the match. This could be a very
:54:19. > :54:22.important game here. They can take the first couple of points, really
:54:23. > :55:20.take it to him, a double break would be very useful.
:55:21. > :55:46.It sounds like this crowd know how to dish it out a little bit!
:55:47. > :57:03.Just out. It was a poor forehand from Fognini. Straight down the
:57:04. > :57:09.middle. Don't know what he thought he was doing with that, got away
:57:10. > :57:11.with it. Perhaps thought Ward was going to go to one side, he would
:57:12. > :58:00.just go down the middle. The tide of set one being turned in
:58:01. > :58:20.this game, the fifth game. Got himself into trouble with that
:58:21. > :58:23.approach shot. Not convincing. Left with no choice, he had to come in
:58:24. > :58:29.from that position, but not enough light on that ball. Still a
:58:30. > :58:47.beautiful flick from Fognini. Now, at zero -40, the Italian
:58:48. > :59:30.comeback is on again. What a shot. What a forehand that
:59:31. > :59:38.was. From the beach, in that far left-hand corner. To generate so
:59:39. > :59:46.much pace on the stretch, it is almost as if you need is a challenge
:59:47. > :59:54.to get himself going. Davis Cup, quarterfinal, Italy against Great
:59:55. > :59:58.Britain. Plenty at stake. Three other quarterfinals around the
:59:59. > :00:03.world, the Czech Republic have made an excellent start in Tokyo, playing
:00:04. > :00:15.Japan. They are without Tomas Berdych but Radek Stepanek doing the
:00:16. > :00:29.job on day one. France against Germany. Wawrinka, the Australian
:00:30. > :00:33.Open champion losing the first set to Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan and
:00:34. > :00:39.he is a break down in the second as well we're hearing. The tie is being
:00:40. > :00:45.played in Geneva. Federer is there as well. Federer and Murray, the
:00:46. > :00:52.representatives of the called Big Four on Davis Cup duty this weekend.
:00:53. > :00:53.It is certainly wide open this competition this year, at this
:00:54. > :01:53.stage. I wond if in between the matches
:01:54. > :01:56.they can take one of those rollers and try and roll the court a little
:01:57. > :02:01.bit. I don't know if they are allowed to do that. If they get on,
:02:02. > :02:07.Andy Murray wouldn't be happy with that at all, sliding into that area,
:02:08. > :02:31.hopefully it will be drier by then, but...
:02:32. > :02:41.This is the start really. It is the peak time of year, from now until
:02:42. > :02:47.the end of Wimbledon, there will be no let-up for Murray and other
:02:48. > :02:53.players, of course. The French Open, and then the grass.
:02:54. > :03:37.A very good point there from James Ward. A little lapse in
:03:38. > :03:41.concentration. That point was earned by Ward, but a couple of dodgy
:03:42. > :03:45.points before that from the Italian and he is right back in again. He is
:03:46. > :04:21.suffering from lapses of concentration today.
:04:22. > :04:32.Ward is a break up. Fognini achieving the break. The chances he
:04:33. > :04:50.couldn't take in the sixth game of the first set.
:04:51. > :05:43.Another opportunity to do so in the sixth game of the second.
:05:44. > :05:50.It was very close to being called out. It just clipped the edge of the
:05:51. > :05:55.line. This one here. Oh, that's wide. That's wide. It hit the
:05:56. > :06:04.baseline which often is the thing that confuses people at court side
:06:05. > :06:13.including the line judges. Just from that look, it looked wide to us.
:06:14. > :06:22.That movement, the fact that he didn't slide for that last ball
:06:23. > :06:27.really shows how uncomfortable he is with this clay court and the fact he
:06:28. > :06:30.didn't attempt to do that shows me he is sceptical about the clay court
:06:31. > :06:49.there. An amazing looking forehand that
:06:50. > :07:28.was. Good play from Ward. Every time
:07:29. > :07:32.Fognini is missing that first serve he is trying to be as aggressive as
:07:33. > :08:27.he can to get ahead in the rally. What a shame. That was a terrific
:08:28. > :08:31.rally. One of the best changes of the match so far and Ward was very
:08:32. > :08:40.much holding his own until that final mis-hit. It will be so
:08:41. > :08:45.difficult to get past Fognini. These top guys when it gets to the points
:08:46. > :08:53.like that, they are so good, big targets, hitting high and heavy and
:08:54. > :09:03.I think Ward is kind of, his movement around the back failed him.
:09:04. > :09:19.It is a screamer! Well, that in many ways was James
:09:20. > :09:23.Ward doing his very best Fabio Fognini impression. He is just
:09:24. > :09:28.standing there saying, "Take that." He knew as soon as he hit it. That's
:09:29. > :09:32.the best thing. If he gets a look at the second set,
:09:33. > :09:33.he should step in much earlier and try and take the return inside the
:09:34. > :09:52.baseline. UMPIRE: Out. If you are going to
:09:53. > :09:56.overrule that, you need to look at the one a few points ago. I think he
:09:57. > :10:09.is right. It is a good call by the umpire. I am afraid he missed one
:10:10. > :10:13.earlier. He can be as aggressive as he likes. Even if you are very
:10:14. > :10:19.aggressive, you are not going to be putting Fabio under pressure. If he
:10:20. > :10:53.can rush him that's the key. He knows he is getting quite a few
:10:54. > :10:58.errors and points coming his way off the strings of Fognini. It is
:10:59. > :12:09.getting the balance right, isn't it Absolutely. Another chance.
:12:10. > :12:24.Well played. Ward closes out the game.
:12:25. > :12:31.This time he takes it and leads 4-2. It is a tremendous performance. He
:12:32. > :12:52.is playing a high quality standard of tennis today. He is well above
:12:53. > :13:02.his ranking. That's for sure. This man is 161 in the world, Ward.
:13:03. > :13:12.It is not easy to tell, is it? This is an away match.
:13:13. > :13:57.He should be getting up to around 100. It is unusual to see those type
:13:58. > :13:59.of errors, that wasn't a difficult shot. There has been a lot of
:14:00. > :14:36.forehands that way. He has a spring in his step He has
:14:37. > :14:41.played brilliantly. Even if he were to lose this match, ward, when
:14:42. > :14:46.Fognini is such an important part of this team, and he had a knee injury,
:14:47. > :14:51.you want him on court as long as possible, if he is going to lose
:14:52. > :14:56.this match, he may have to play three matches. If and if you can
:14:57. > :15:10.keep him out for three hours plus on a day like today, it is all good.
:15:11. > :15:19.He changed his mind at the last minute, ward. Also, John, it could
:15:20. > :15:24.come down to a fifth and deciding rubber which Ward has experience of
:15:25. > :15:50.a in the past. The more time he can play on this court the better.
:15:51. > :15:58.Not sure if the umpire missed that. I am sure it bounced twice. Oh.
:15:59. > :16:04.Maybe just scraped his frame under the ball.
:16:05. > :16:08.What a point from Fognini. In that backhand a little flick to land it
:16:09. > :16:10.in the corner. Then a beautiful drop shot from behind the baseline on the
:16:11. > :17:47.stretch. Exceptional point. He is making him work so hard. When
:17:48. > :17:51.he plays like this, ward, one of his main problem is his mobility. But
:17:52. > :17:57.when he is playing this well, with his serve, and his ground stroke so
:17:58. > :17:59.heavy, it is not easy to get him on the move. He is tough to get him to
:18:00. > :21:04.move when he is this accurate. A couple of long arduous games and
:21:05. > :21:07.Ward has won them both. He has stuck through both games where he had
:21:08. > :21:11.opportunities, wasn't able to take one on the previous game, now he is
:21:12. > :21:15.able to take this one. Sticking through it, battling hard, that is
:21:16. > :21:20.going to add up later on, because you know you have been through those
:21:21. > :21:23.tough games where you need to go through some more, you have those
:21:24. > :21:29.under the belt. I have done it once, I can do it twice.
:21:30. > :21:36.It is a tremendous performance by James Ward. You look at the
:21:37. > :21:40.disparity with the rankings and on clay. Fognini's best surface by
:21:41. > :21:46.miles. A world class player, and Ward could have won that first set.
:21:47. > :21:54.Up 5-2 in the second and you can't ask for more.
:21:55. > :21:58.Scenes from the day so far in Naples. If you weren't with us
:21:59. > :22:05.earlier, torrential rain, forcing a delay to the start of play. Along
:22:06. > :22:11.with the covers as well. The court really soft in places, as
:22:12. > :22:15.you can see. Fognini, at times, he has shown the skills that have taken
:22:16. > :22:21.him to 13 in the world, but it has been this man, Ward, who has
:22:22. > :22:28.demonstrated talent of his own, to move 5-2 up in the second set.
:22:29. > :22:43.Levelling this opening rubber in this Davis Cup quarter-final.
:22:44. > :25:07.Good day for the racing out there. A stiff south-westerly? I reckon so.
:25:08. > :25:12.Forehand has looked very average today. We have seen some great
:25:13. > :25:42.winners but so many errors. He is letting this set go here, that
:25:43. > :26:45.is three awful points. Britain aren't complaining. Set point.
:26:46. > :26:56.He is looking so casual at the moment. The one before that. He is
:26:57. > :28:13.just feeling it there. Oh that is great from Ward.
:28:14. > :28:19.What a drop shot! One set all, and Ward there winning the last three
:28:20. > :28:30.games of the set. Hasn't he played well? Fognini, in all sorts of
:28:31. > :28:36.trouble. Looking unsure of himself. Caught by surprise. The skill and
:28:37. > :28:41.determination of this Londoners James Ward, who yet again is rising
:28:42. > :28:51.to the challenge of Davis Cup and representing his country.
:28:52. > :28:55.One set all in Naples. If this is the teach the main course
:28:56. > :29:00.should be something special and it will be served by Andy Murray, who
:29:01. > :29:04.is one of these statistics we love; but he wasn't born the last time
:29:05. > :29:08.Great Britain got to this stage of the Davis Cup, but there he is,
:29:09. > :29:13.warming up before his match against the world number 34, Andreas Seppi,
:29:14. > :29:16.that will be following this match between Ward and Fognini, and
:29:17. > :29:20.certainly on the form book you would have taught this match might have
:29:21. > :29:27.gone swiftly. In fact John Lloyd said at the start of the programme
:29:28. > :29:31.many hours ago, he didn't feel James Ward had much of a chance. If you
:29:32. > :29:35.have only seen James Ward play at Queens, this has been a revelation
:29:36. > :29:42.some of his play, we have alluded to the fact Fognini has had an injury,
:29:43. > :29:46.but in advance of think this it was thought it was his thigh but he is
:29:47. > :29:52.getting attention to his chest unless he is getting attention for
:29:53. > :29:56.the same of it. I am not sure we have too many medically qualified
:29:57. > :30:01.people in the commentary. If we go back to Dominic and Jonathan and
:30:02. > :30:05.Dom. Has he trained a rib or something, what do you make of it?
:30:06. > :30:10.It looks like it the way the physio, that wasn't the problem that we
:30:11. > :30:13.supposed he had, but he has been moaning and throughout the whole,
:30:14. > :30:17.when he won the first set he was still moaning at his captain but he
:30:18. > :30:21.tends to be this kind of a personality, but he is not
:30:22. > :30:24.comfortable, but I mean, it is extraordinary the way this match,
:30:25. > :30:28.you would have tempt after he won the first set that the second he
:30:29. > :30:34.would just step it up a bit, and he would be OK, but he is actually, he
:30:35. > :30:39.has sort of dropped his level. You have to give credit to James Ward,
:30:40. > :30:43.but Fognini is making mistakes and he is not comfortable and it is good
:30:44. > :30:50.news either way. If he were to win this match, he is not looking grated
:30:51. > :30:55.and I am sure he is not quaking in his shoes watching this performance.
:30:56. > :30:59.Were you the first Davis Cup captain to give James Ward an outing in the
:31:00. > :31:04.Davis Cup? Did I read that somewhere? That is correct. What was
:31:05. > :31:09.it when you saw him, a few years ago, what was it he had that you
:31:10. > :31:14.thought might make him a serious player in years to come To be honest
:31:15. > :31:19.we didn't have that many singles players at that time, he was the
:31:20. > :31:23.highest ranked, but he, he was a sort of a stubborn personality,
:31:24. > :31:29.mine, he wanted to be out there, I mean, look Davis Cup is a funny
:31:30. > :31:32.competition, there are some players that actually sort of want to be
:31:33. > :31:36.picked because they want to be in the team but don't want to be out on
:31:37. > :31:43.the court sometimes. Whereas he wanted to be and he was very sort
:31:44. > :31:48.of, he was annoyed I hadn't picked him for a previous match and he
:31:49. > :31:52.played very well in that match. Some of players play well in Davis Cup
:31:53. > :31:55.and some go the other way, you have had some some highly ranked that go
:31:56. > :31:58.out and can't represent their country and James Ward has done the
:31:59. > :32:07.opposite. It is one of these things if you could bottle what he achieved
:32:08. > :32:11.in the Davis Cup and put it in the regular circuit he would be in the
:32:12. > :32:18.top 100. The touch of that drop shot, to win the second set. Anybody
:32:19. > :32:23.would have been proud of that. What is it that stopped somebody who has
:32:24. > :32:26.the ability to play shots like that, what stops them from achieving what
:32:27. > :32:32.should be their potential of a place in the top 100 and maybe the top 50?
:32:33. > :32:36.I mean, it is obviously, they will say it is doing it week-to-week. The
:32:37. > :32:41.tennis circuit, it is is a long-haul out there, it is a lot of
:32:42. > :32:46.tournaments. Some peak at and some work when they come into Davis Cup
:32:47. > :32:49.they are in a team jierment. I am not saying he doesn't work well the
:32:50. > :32:55.rest of the year. But obviously in this environment, where he gets the
:32:56. > :32:59.team coming together, and he puts in great effort. Sometimes we have had
:33:00. > :33:03.British players that play very well at Wimbledon and don't do much the
:33:04. > :33:09.rest of the year. It is about about with the tennis circuit it is
:33:10. > :33:14.longevity. You have play at a consistent level week in, week out.
:33:15. > :33:19.You would have thought after the run he has had this year in Davis Cup
:33:20. > :33:25.and last year, particularly these last few matches, whether he wins or
:33:26. > :33:38.loses he is coming up against the number 13. He should be in the top
:33:39. > :33:42.100. There is no question about it. Dominic, a quick point to you. The
:33:43. > :33:47.force was very much with James Ward at the end of that second set. This
:33:48. > :33:51.has been if not a lengthy, certainly a considerable delay, so how much
:33:52. > :33:57.does this allow Fognini to get himself together and perhaps take
:33:58. > :34:02.the impetus away from James Ward? It lets him refocus and takes away from
:34:03. > :34:07.James Ward's momentum, this is one of the big things, you won a set and
:34:08. > :34:12.you have to keep the momentum going, it is very easy to kind of drop your
:34:13. > :34:16.level and give your opponent a way back in. It is important he comes
:34:17. > :34:20.out here, hits a good amount of first serves and tries to hold the
:34:21. > :34:26.service game to keep that momentum in his favour.
:34:27. > :35:00.So third set, Ward to serve. This is the pan Kerr from an
:35:01. > :35:06.stallian point of view. Their number one against Britain's number two.
:35:07. > :35:16.Would fancy Murray strongly against Andreas Seppi.
:35:17. > :35:21.When you have a world class number one, if he loses this match, it that
:35:22. > :35:26.drains the rest of the team, the whole confidence level drops.
:35:27. > :35:32.As you said, this is obviously a banker match for the stallian, it
:35:33. > :35:52.should be any way. -- the Italians.
:35:53. > :36:02.In fairness to him, it is not like he is done at one set all. No. Early
:36:03. > :36:06.days. Still early day, absolutely. Who knows Fabio Fognini, he is way
:36:07. > :36:08.short of his best tennis, on the evidence of the first hour and a
:36:09. > :36:38.bit. It looked like that was one of the
:36:39. > :36:41.worst drop shots James Ward has hit. I thought it was over. It was a high
:36:42. > :36:45.ball. You could see he stumbled. There is the slip and that was the
:36:46. > :37:48.end of that point. Still a good lob though.
:37:49. > :37:55.That was a bit more of the Fabio Fognini at his best. Flashing
:37:56. > :37:59.forehands, and backhand right on the line. . That is OK. I think I James
:38:00. > :38:03.Ward should be happy with that point, he should be making Fabio
:38:04. > :38:06.Fognini hit those type of shots to win points and not gift him
:38:07. > :38:20.anything, you should say congratulations and keep going.
:38:21. > :38:25.That is more like it from the Italian point of view. Great form in
:38:26. > :38:41.the first game. The locals finding their voice at
:38:42. > :38:59.last. They have been outsung for the first hour and three-quarters.
:39:00. > :39:05.A good one-two punch. He did not go after that one. That is where they
:39:06. > :39:37.have had the problems. That is a Piti. It is not how many
:39:38. > :39:52.double falls you serve it is when you serve them. That was a big one
:39:53. > :39:55.to serve it on, unfortunately. You serve them. That was a big one to
:39:56. > :40:35.serve it on, unfortunately. -- pity. Tremendous recovery.
:40:36. > :40:41.He has done two returns and the same thing, he has dug a hole in and he
:40:42. > :40:45.is not happy with that. I think in a situation like this, the ITF. The
:40:46. > :40:50.home country should be fined, if they haven't got the right, you know
:40:51. > :40:55.equipment for rain, as obviously they didn't or they have mishandled
:40:56. > :41:09.it, the way, they should be fined for it.
:41:10. > :41:15.They didn't have big enough covers That is my point. The rest of the
:41:16. > :41:19.court is immaculate in the lines, outside it is dreadful. That is the
:41:20. > :41:21.fault of the organisers. If you stage a home tie, it better
:41:22. > :44:04.be right. Sure that wasn't a molehill? So bad.
:44:05. > :44:34.Look at a this. Really! -- look at this.
:44:35. > :44:45.There's the break for Fognini, opening game of set three.
:44:46. > :44:52.Here is the difficulty now, all that good momentum that was built up has
:44:53. > :44:56.now been lost. Yes. Let's see how he didn't push it, the shot before he
:44:57. > :45:00.didn't push off into that area. I was thinking with the injury, we
:45:01. > :45:04.don't know what it is, it looked like the rib, where would you see
:45:05. > :45:08.that would affect him. It is a knee injury he can't move, a shoulder he
:45:09. > :45:14.can't serve. He is not hitting the ball any softer, I don't know what
:45:15. > :45:20.that is effecting. -- affecting, I don't know what it is affecting this
:45:21. > :45:26.injury it looks like he has got. It might be more mental than anything
:45:27. > :45:31.else. Do you think it could be a bit of gamesmanship, I need to take that
:45:32. > :45:44.and slow down the... Good time for him to do it, wasn't it: Yes.
:45:45. > :45:53.Lot of clay court pedigree in the last six months, all very reputable
:45:54. > :46:09.established events on the ATP World Tour.
:46:10. > :46:16.Still a lot of movement round the stands. People maybe took a break
:46:17. > :46:19.after the second set, wanting to come back in but really they should
:46:20. > :46:36.wait for the sit down. John was telling us on the red
:46:37. > :46:43.button earlier he scrapped that rule, let speck tailors wander about
:46:44. > :46:49.freely. Absolutely. Happens on the courts at Wimbledon. Why should you
:46:50. > :46:51.have to wait for the change over. Could be 100 degrees. It could take
:46:52. > :47:00.15 minutes to get into watch. That was a mishit on that forehand,
:47:01. > :47:51.but he got away with it. Running round a couple of forehands,
:47:52. > :47:55.do you sense it is the two handed backhand that is making causing him
:47:56. > :47:59.disColl fort. If you are twisting with your left side, it is possible,
:48:00. > :48:04.but if you are going for a while, a lot of the time he is flicking it
:48:05. > :48:07.down the middle. Maybe when he is trying to go cross court, maybe
:48:08. > :48:23.then, but... Oh that is fabulous! Great
:48:24. > :48:26.entertainment there. None what last night flicks from
:48:27. > :48:57.Fognini. -- nonchalant. Lost to Novak Djokovic at the start
:48:58. > :49:04.of the year. A fantastic experience in Argentina, winning that first
:49:05. > :49:12.round Davis Cup tie for Italy. He was the hero, no doubt about it,
:49:13. > :49:26.involved on all three days. Co-that be one shot there, potentially?
:49:27. > :49:32.Maybe. If it is as bad as he is making out,
:49:33. > :49:36.the odds have strengthened he won't play in the double, which would be
:49:37. > :49:53.very good news for the British team, that is for sure.
:49:54. > :50:06.Oh! Spectacular. That is the shot of day so far.
:50:07. > :50:31.Could he get any further wider than that?
:50:32. > :50:42.Ward is standing toe to toe. That is good to see.
:50:43. > :50:46.Important he doesn't get bullied back by the flashing shots from
:50:47. > :51:38.Fognini. He seems to be having a lot of
:51:39. > :51:42.success with the kind of disguised ball toss, looking like he is going
:51:43. > :51:46.to kick it out to backhand and take to it the forehand. It seems ass if
:51:47. > :51:51.Fognini is edging to the backhand and has to shift back to the
:51:52. > :51:54.forehand, unless he comes out with that brilliant forehand we saw
:51:55. > :52:18.earlier he has missed some of those. It is a good little tactic.
:52:19. > :52:32.Ward has been fighting hard. One set all with the world number 13 here,
:52:33. > :52:38.Fabio Fognini, the drop shot has worked a treat at times for the
:52:39. > :52:44.British number three in the rankings. Did a good job of whipping
:52:45. > :52:48.up the support as well, who in turn have really played their part, the
:52:49. > :52:55.British supporters out here. Fantastic to hear them getting
:52:56. > :52:58.behind the team. Strong travelling contingent in the
:52:59. > :53:03.stand to the left of your picture. When that is empty, that is the
:53:04. > :53:08.union flag. It is packed out with Brits.
:53:09. > :53:12.It makes a big difference to, when you are a little bit down, they can
:53:13. > :53:32.bring you back up, or to steady you and keep you going.
:53:33. > :53:49.He called a foot fault there. They would never foot fault, if you
:53:50. > :53:53.were playing in Italy, a Italian would never foot fault another
:53:54. > :54:03.Italian. Never do that. Times have changed.
:54:04. > :54:07.A lively Davis Cup experience in Rome. He played three times with
:54:08. > :54:30.Italy. I would like to assess your record
:54:31. > :54:33.to find ammunition. He had some decent wins.
:54:34. > :54:49.Against Italy? A doubles match with your brother I
:54:50. > :54:51.was remined of, 1976 at Wimbledon, contained an 18-16 fourth set. I
:54:52. > :54:55.remember that one. Selective memory. Exactly.
:54:56. > :55:24.Half a chance forward, break down this third set, but now at 30 all...
:55:25. > :55:33.The up and down Italian, just having one of his poorer moments.
:55:34. > :55:53.Very level-headed, James Ward. In control. On top of the situation.
:55:54. > :56:09.Oh, what skill. He is a very fine doubles player that was the feel he
:56:10. > :56:13.has add the net. Moved beautifully. Look how quickly he accelerated,
:56:14. > :56:15.once he saw he was going across court, cuts it off and a beautiful
:56:16. > :56:32.touch as well. Snuffed out that half chance pretty
:56:33. > :56:37.competently. Ward has been so impressive, these baseline rallies.
:56:38. > :56:41.Going into the match I thought it was only going to be one winner and
:56:42. > :56:47.Ward has hung in, so many of the long baseline ex chaiping changes,
:56:48. > :56:50.and it has been 50-50 really. Coming up against someone like Fognini,
:56:51. > :57:10.that such a class clay court player, it is an impressive performance by
:57:11. > :59:00.if Brit. -- by the Brit.
:59:01. > :59:06.That was a bit hit and hope That whole game was hit and hope. He gets
:59:07. > :59:11.up a break and again, a world class player, that is when you would Troy
:59:12. > :59:15.and get on a lower ranked player and go for a double break, and get his
:59:16. > :59:18.confidence down and he just played such a sloppy game there, it is
:59:19. > :59:23.almost like he is thinking I have the break up, I will coast to the
:59:24. > :59:27.third set, well, he has to be careful, James Ward is playing very
:59:28. > :59:34.well. He is going after his opponent. This set is by no means
:59:35. > :59:38.over. It is not like he has a great serve. He hasn't got the biggest
:59:39. > :59:54.serve and James is getting into a lot of the return games. I wouldn't
:59:55. > :00:09.be giving up so quickly. His support team to the right. Just behind the
:00:10. > :00:21.barrier. Would you expect the doubles line-up to change? If
:00:22. > :00:24.Fognini is healthy, yes. They are an accomplished team, they have played
:00:25. > :00:27.together, they have an understanding, and he is definitely
:00:28. > :00:37.stronger than the Lorenzi at doubles. So that might be an option.
:00:38. > :00:56.Interesting to see what will happen. They have a lot of options.
:00:57. > :01:07.A wonderful setting. The Tennis Club Napoli. You could watch from the top
:01:08. > :01:09.of the hill. With good long-range binoculars, you could get a great
:01:10. > :01:47.view! That is another brilliant point from
:01:48. > :01:55.Ward. He should have that on loop as a screensaver! It was world-class.
:01:56. > :02:26.Toad -- toe to toe. Not far away. Well played, says Leon
:02:27. > :02:29.Smith. Next time it will work. One of his favourite shots, two-handed
:02:30. > :03:13.down-the-line. So far, the Italian seems to have
:03:14. > :03:20.set himself mentally a little bit better than the previous sets. A
:03:21. > :03:28.little bit more composed. Saying that, it could change any second
:03:29. > :03:36.with him. He has made it! What a forehand. Fognini is staring in
:03:37. > :03:37.total disbelief. You thought there was no chance he would hit a clean
:03:38. > :04:10.winner. A beautiful shot. This is superb from James Ward.
:04:11. > :04:15.Breaking back in the sixth game. He took the ball so cleanly. Best
:04:16. > :04:46.tennis I have ever seen him play. He did well to hang in. Might have
:04:47. > :05:00.played one more shot. Good defensive play, did well to get this one back.
:05:01. > :05:06.A good effort considering where he was. Those balls ten to hang longer
:05:07. > :05:59.in the air than you want to. -- tend.
:06:00. > :06:11.A double fault. That was about midway up the net. Incredible, these
:06:12. > :06:12.ups and downs. You always think of top players being so solid, so
:06:13. > :07:01.regular. Quite a few bad bounces out here
:07:02. > :07:21.today. The players are dealing with it much better than we thought.
:07:22. > :07:28.It is one of the challenges of playing on clay. Dealing with
:07:29. > :07:36.everything it shows with you, which invariably includes bad bounces.
:07:37. > :07:39.Clay court differ so much around the world. No wonder the same as the
:07:40. > :07:59.next. That is true. I bet you have played on some poorer
:08:00. > :08:10.examples. There have been occasions. Those outposts! On those courts, you
:08:11. > :08:19.get the occasional good bounce! Name and shame! Let me think! It is a
:08:20. > :08:56.long list. This is turning out to be a huge
:08:57. > :09:01.game. If Ward can somehow break, an explosion could be coming from the
:09:02. > :09:07.Italian. He has had enough game points. The pain is always worse
:09:08. > :09:26.when you miss a shot. Dodgy clay on that top left-hand
:09:27. > :09:58.corner. It really looks horrible in that
:09:59. > :10:05.corner. Is the court fit for play? Is it safe enough? You could have a
:10:06. > :11:01.bucket and spade up there, rather than a tennis racquet.
:11:02. > :11:05.Luckily it is not so hot today, because these are some punishing
:11:06. > :11:40.rallies. Amazing what winning a game like
:11:41. > :11:46.that, even on your own service, how it can change the moment. For
:11:47. > :11:56.Fognini, relief, forward, an opportunity missed. -- for Ward. You
:11:57. > :12:12.think, gosh, I had an opportunity. It is important he focuses on this
:12:13. > :12:15.game. Statistically, you get broken and most often after you had
:12:16. > :13:17.unconverted break points in the previous game.
:13:18. > :15:05.That was a difficult shot he played, the high background, then he had to
:15:06. > :15:10.recover his position and it will please his captain. The second
:15:11. > :15:24.singles player is hanging on in there. He had an easier shot, but he
:15:25. > :15:33.said that wide. That is Fabio Fognini for you. Brilliant and
:15:34. > :15:38.flamboyant. Let's cross to Russell Fuller. What can you tell us? It
:15:39. > :15:43.seems like a good atmosphere. What about the conditions? The conditions
:15:44. > :15:50.are worrying at the moment overhead, Jonathan. The threat of a shower
:15:51. > :15:54.remains. I do not think it would force the players off court. It is
:15:55. > :16:00.breezy, but very pleasant for the players at the moment. Andy Murray
:16:01. > :16:03.has been warming up on one of the outside courts. Even though there is
:16:04. > :16:12.much to be gained for Great Britain, even though James Ward does not win
:16:13. > :16:18.this match, keeping Fabio Fognini out on the court, the message is
:16:19. > :16:23.that Andy Murray will not be able to complete his match tonight. He will
:16:24. > :16:27.have to come back tomorrow morning, finished his singles, and then play
:16:28. > :16:41.the doubles rubber alongside Colin Fleming. That is tough. The home of
:16:42. > :18:22.the pizza. Have you been to Naples, John? No, I have not been.
:18:23. > :18:29.We have seen a lot of strange errors from the Italian. He is income and
:18:30. > :18:34.and then he does not move his feet and he is sloppy and it gives James
:18:35. > :18:48.Ward a chance to get back in this game.
:18:49. > :19:01.That was just sensational! This was a tough volley. That was a
:19:02. > :19:27.shoestring volley. Or shoelace should I say. That was unbelievable.
:19:28. > :19:36.John mentioned the word control. You send over the two hours, he has
:19:37. > :19:45.never really been in control of his match. No, this has been the best in
:19:46. > :19:49.terms of the match. It has been more of a positive step. He has not been
:19:50. > :21:22.shouting and gesturing to the crowd. I don't think he knew what he did. A
:21:23. > :21:43.bit of improvisation. A ballet move after the shot.
:21:44. > :21:48.That was a good effort from James Ward. He was in trouble and he has
:21:49. > :22:40.got himself back now. Well done, good effort. That was a
:22:41. > :22:45.good game to win, to send a message out to your opponent, I am not going
:22:46. > :22:51.away from this set. You have to win this one. It is important because
:22:52. > :23:00.this guy is a little bit up and down and he can give you an opportunity
:23:01. > :23:07.if you are willing to take it. You have to at least force your service
:23:08. > :23:12.and your opponent to serve it out. This set is not over by a long way.
:23:13. > :23:22.If James Ward can get that first point somehow. He seems to be calmer
:23:23. > :23:32.now compared to what he was. It is obviously a huge game for both
:23:33. > :23:37.players here. The captain is doing a lot of chatting right now at the
:23:38. > :23:43.changeover to James Ward. What is he like as a captain, Don? He is very
:23:44. > :23:50.good. He works out pretty quickly what each player needs, whether it
:23:51. > :23:53.is a calming voice, tactical help, and he might come out with little
:23:54. > :23:59.bits here and there that might help you. He does not want to over or you
:24:00. > :24:04.with too much information. He is very calming and very positive all
:24:05. > :24:12.the time. It is important to be positive. Number one doubles
:24:13. > :24:48.player, number 20 in the world. What a shot that is! What a start to
:24:49. > :24:54.the game. When you hear the players and they drag the granting out, you
:24:55. > :25:14.do not do that when you are feeling a bit tight, so that is good to see.
:25:15. > :25:26.Very, very positive play from James Ward on return of serve. We talked
:25:27. > :25:30.about that injury a little bit and it seems as if he is not getting
:25:31. > :25:37.that much pace on the serve now. Not that he has got a huge serve. On the
:25:38. > :25:57.second he looks as if he is just popping it in there.
:25:58. > :26:13.Oh, some recovery that! James Ward had a good chance at a backhand and
:26:14. > :26:45.he just slipped a little bit and he did not do much with it.
:26:46. > :26:51.James Ward is doing his country proud out here. The length on that
:26:52. > :27:14.ball there. That was a very good wide serve.
:27:15. > :27:19.There is not too much pace and you do not have a lot to work with, you
:27:20. > :27:30.have to create your own and that is where the error comes from. He went
:27:31. > :27:38.for a low percentage shot. That was not a very big serve either. Two
:27:39. > :28:15.break points gone away so quickly. Such a chance there. It was the
:28:16. > :28:20.right shot to play, but he just overcooked it. He came out a little
:28:21. > :28:32.bit too early and lifted up too early. It was just enough for it to
:28:33. > :29:01.be pushed wide. Roger Federer is a great exponent of that shot.
:29:02. > :29:11.And still James Ward keeps playing his game.
:29:12. > :29:43.And The many backends in the rally? -- backhands.
:29:44. > :30:00.That was big. He got around that so quickly. It was not a bad backhand
:30:01. > :30:02.from Ward. He read it so quickly. Made it look like he had half an
:30:03. > :30:34.hour to get ready for that one. Look at him now! You have not won it
:30:35. > :30:45.yet, made. But he is 2-1 to the good. He came back from 15-40 in
:30:46. > :30:49.that game, a good effort, a very entertaining set of tennis. Ward
:30:50. > :31:04.must keep believing, as Italy moved to-1 ahead. -- 2-1.
:31:05. > :31:14.The Italians are in the ascendancy. The atmosphere is building. There
:31:15. > :31:23.are three other quarterfinals taking place around the world this weekend.
:31:24. > :31:27.From Japan to Geneva. I think we can show you the match point of one of
:31:28. > :31:40.the games taking place. This is Radek Stepanek in the first of the
:31:41. > :31:47.rubbers in Tokyo. His team-mate then won the second match, the Czech
:31:48. > :31:55.Republic have a 2-0 lead, perhaps unassailable. In France, France
:31:56. > :32:01.versus Germany, Germany have won the opening singles match, perhaps an
:32:02. > :32:17.upset. Switzerland versus Kazakhstan, a potential upset, the
:32:18. > :32:28.score at 4-4. It could be a long all night in Geneva. A fantastic shot of
:32:29. > :32:39.Naples, as we plan above this custom-made court. They look at the
:32:40. > :32:42.statistics for the third set. If you have any questions for our
:32:43. > :32:50.commentators or point to make, visit Twitter. And if you must step away
:32:51. > :32:58.from the television, picking the kids up for the last day of term,
:32:59. > :33:09.then you can follow it across the whole range of BBC out at. Radio
:33:10. > :33:18.five live, the website. Whatever happens in Naples, you can find it
:33:19. > :33:24.somewhere. Currently, Fognini is 2-1 to the good. He is taking a bathroom
:33:25. > :33:34.break, an opportune moment to talk to our commentary experts. Dominik,
:33:35. > :33:40.as a player, you have just gone 2-1 and your opponent is taking a
:33:41. > :33:46.bathroom break. Time to think. What is James Ward thinking now? He was
:33:47. > :33:52.being positive, taking it to his opponent. He realises that he will
:33:53. > :34:00.have to take his opportunities, that Fognini is a volatile player, he
:34:01. > :34:06.must just think, if I get chances, take them, and I'm still in the
:34:07. > :34:13.match. What does the captain do at moments like this? Leon Smith will
:34:14. > :34:20.be telling James Ward, you are so close. You're playing against a
:34:21. > :34:26.player whose temperament is going up and down, if you hang in, keep the
:34:27. > :34:31.same tactics, they are perfect. He was very close to perfect
:34:32. > :34:36.execution, that set could have gone either way. So, more of the same
:34:37. > :34:42.thing, get off to a good start, do not be intimidated, and he certainly
:34:43. > :34:48.has not been. Maintain the belief that you can beat this player. And
:34:49. > :34:52.he can. This match is far from over. I am unconvinced of the Italian. He
:34:53. > :35:02.has lived very erratic. James Ward is still very close. There is a long
:35:03. > :35:09.way to go. It is quite called for the spectators. -- cold. If you have
:35:10. > :35:14.just got home and want to know what is coming up later on, Andy Murray
:35:15. > :35:20.will be on court at the conclusion of this match, playing Andreas
:35:21. > :35:25.Seppi. But the way that James Ward is playing, and he has hit some
:35:26. > :35:45.extraordinary shots, this match may have a long way to go.
:35:46. > :35:54.In the last set games got broken in the first game. He cannot afford
:35:55. > :36:45.that in this set. -- James Ward got broken in the first game.
:36:46. > :36:54.It seems somewhat out of character for him. Once again, the middle of
:36:55. > :37:16.the net. This is a big game for the Italian, that is very sloppy.
:37:17. > :37:24.Two great shots, two recoveries. To stay composed on the third shot,
:37:25. > :37:48.that will be important in the rest of this match.
:37:49. > :38:01.How casual was that? It looked like exhibition play. It worked. Not
:38:02. > :38:12.exactly well disguised. But still good enough that he could not quite
:38:13. > :38:13.just a defeat. -- adjust the feet. Surprised he did not slide on the
:38:14. > :38:24.drop shot. What a shot that is. One of his
:38:25. > :38:34.best, for you, the two-handed, down-the-line? Absolutely. He stays
:38:35. > :38:35.on top of it well. He sometimes catches the forehand late, but the
:38:36. > :39:05.backend, really fluent. First job, well done. After losing
:39:06. > :39:09.the third set. He could have been slightly down after that and lost an
:39:10. > :39:22.early break, but he did not, and post himself very well, excellent
:39:23. > :39:30.first hold. -- composed himself. Fognini really wants an early lead.
:39:31. > :39:39.He wants to make games think this match is over as soon as possible.
:39:40. > :39:57.-- James. But as you say, a good came from James Ward.
:39:58. > :40:06.That is what he is up against. The danger is that at any moment, the
:40:07. > :40:19.real Fognini could come out to play. He just needs to think those
:40:20. > :40:27.kind of points will happen. He knows the quality of player. But there
:40:28. > :40:34.will be still in mistakes. Wait for those opportunities. Davis Cup
:40:35. > :40:45.experience being built by James Ward, it is important for him. Won
:40:46. > :40:53.nine, lost five. A good five set win last year. That was key. A real
:40:54. > :41:23.career highlight, in San Diego. Lots of people have been making the
:41:24. > :41:31.point in social media, where is the James Ward of the Davis Cup,
:41:32. > :41:38.elsewhere on the tour. He has lost in qualifying a couple of times.
:41:39. > :41:50.Lost the first round in Panama to the world number 169, last time-out.
:41:51. > :41:55.It is difficult. It can be very easy to get up for a big match like this,
:41:56. > :42:03.or at home at Wimbledon, Queen's, a working around you, living at home,
:42:04. > :42:07.your own physios, coaches, everything prepared for you, for
:42:08. > :42:12.potentially one match. But when you are away, in Panama, without your
:42:13. > :42:17.coach and physio at your beck and call at any time, it can be harder
:42:18. > :42:30.to prepare the right way. Also, mentally.
:42:31. > :42:39.It is a huge contrast. It is about how you bridge that gap, I suppose.
:42:40. > :42:44.Some players go the other way. They love the slog in the harder places,
:42:45. > :42:48.but on the big stage, are nowhere to be seen. The potential is big for
:42:49. > :43:18.him, he can handle the big events. He has to be careful. Just to remind
:43:19. > :43:26.you, if you are joining us, Andy Murray is still to come.
:43:27. > :43:43.As every game passes by, the likelihood of Andy Murray finishing
:43:44. > :43:47.his game tonight becomes slimmer. We will worry about that when we get
:43:48. > :43:51.there. Hopefully he is overly stomach bug which afflicted him
:43:52. > :43:54.yesterday. He came out to train until early evening. Spent the rest
:43:55. > :44:17.of the day in bed. The shot selection, his drop shot
:44:18. > :44:27.has been good. But this one, I don't figure was the right time to play
:44:28. > :44:39.that. A risky shot. It did not pay off.
:44:40. > :45:02.He has just pulled up a big clump of clay! There it is. I mean, really.
:45:03. > :45:06.That is just terrible. They are joking about it, and he is also
:45:07. > :45:15.smiling about it, but that could do somebody a very nasty injury. No
:45:16. > :45:19.question, that is dangerous. Lots of players used taping, and ankle
:45:20. > :45:47.brace, under their socks and shoes which you cannot see.
:45:48. > :45:56.He is still fighting gallantly, James Ward, but not much you can do
:45:57. > :46:02.against that. It was brilliant defensive play from James Ward. It
:46:03. > :46:07.was top class. But if you come up against that at the end, when he has
:46:08. > :46:11.got that amount of firepower, where he can get around the ball so
:46:12. > :46:20.quickly and do damage like that, he is too good. But he is still very
:46:21. > :46:24.unpredictable, so you have to keep hanging in there. It is the best
:46:25. > :46:30.match I have ever seen James Ward play. If you put it into context who
:46:31. > :46:36.he is going up against, it has been phenomenal. I know he has beaten Sam
:46:37. > :46:43.Querrey, but he is not a patch on Fabio Fognini on this surface. And
:46:44. > :46:51.we talk about the record that Fognini has on the clay. Maybe
:46:52. > :46:55.Rafael Nadal and there are really not many, but you are talking about
:46:56. > :47:04.a top calibre player on this surface. A lot of credit. Whether he
:47:05. > :47:10.wins or loses this match, it should be a tremendous boost to his career.
:47:11. > :47:14.Even if he loses this comment he has kept his opponent out on the court
:47:15. > :47:20.for a long time and that bodes well for the rest of the tie. If you have
:47:21. > :47:27.got an injured man, keep him out there for as long as possible and
:47:28. > :47:31.soften him up. And if you are Andreas Seppi and you are watching,
:47:32. > :47:36.you will be thinking, if it comes to a decider... He is up against Murray
:47:37. > :48:03.in the next match. It has started to rain. Lovely.
:48:04. > :48:07.Looking at the forecast that came through this morning, I think we
:48:08. > :48:15.have been lucky to get as much play as we have done so far. He's clay
:48:16. > :48:28.courts can soak up a bit of water. If it is a little bit of drizzle. It
:48:29. > :48:33.is mind-boggling sum of the shots. He was pushed away in the far corner
:48:34. > :48:46.and he tried a drop shot and he missed it by about four feet.
:48:47. > :49:19.That is the duty of clay. Any other surface and they would be off the
:49:20. > :49:39.court by now. They don't need any more rain, that is for sure.
:49:40. > :50:12.He is showing the talent he has at the net.
:50:13. > :50:23.That was just so good from both players. It has been a really good
:50:24. > :50:27.match. , very high quality. There have been too many errors from the
:50:28. > :50:42.Italian, but there have been very high-class points.
:50:43. > :50:47.He needs to keep believing. There will be more opportunities, that is
:50:48. > :52:05.for sure. He almost tried to be too clever,
:52:06. > :52:07.but it played to his showmanship. He has got very good technique on the
:52:08. > :52:30.volley both sides. He did the hard bit almost. But when
:52:31. > :54:53.you are going at that speed up the cord it is so hard to control.
:54:54. > :55:02.That was almost like a sucker punch, from Fognini. Stepping right back.
:55:03. > :55:06.Just for the first time in the match, there is a little bit of
:55:07. > :55:20.daylight between the Italians and Great Britain. I just wonder whether
:55:21. > :55:23.James Ward is a little bit fatigued. The combination of that and the
:55:24. > :55:27.mental side of this match and he looks a little bit tired now.
:55:28. > :55:35.Understandably because they have been battering each other around for
:55:36. > :55:37.three hours. He has been getting himself out of some tricky
:55:38. > :55:44.situations and he looks a little bit tired now. It is unfortunate because
:55:45. > :55:50.two breaks and one break and with the Italian soak up and down, but he
:55:51. > :55:58.has now got that cushion. It is going to be tough for James Ward to
:55:59. > :56:03.come back from this position now. We are in the Davis Cup quarterfinals,
:56:04. > :56:13.the Czech Republic leading Japan 2-0. And the Australian Open
:56:14. > :56:29.champion Stanislas Wawrinka was beaten. That would be something if
:56:30. > :56:31.Kazakhstan could beat Switzerland. They have got a good second player,
:56:32. > :56:48.Switzerland. Federer? The world number three and the world
:56:49. > :56:53.number four are playing for Switzerland this weekend. The
:56:54. > :57:03.winners of that tie in Geneva will play the winners of this one. If
:57:04. > :57:11.Britain could host Switzerland, it would be at home.
:57:12. > :57:27.That was a tired looking shot, the feat not moving, and he has lost
:57:28. > :58:01.some energy as well. Injuries always feel better when you
:58:02. > :58:05.are winning. They seem to go away. Either that or he is thinking, I
:58:06. > :58:22.want to go in before it starts raining.
:58:23. > :58:31.You have to give Fognini a huge amount of credit. It has taken him
:58:32. > :58:37.three hours to break the resistance of a much lower ranked player. It
:58:38. > :58:42.has been demoralising at times. The captain will have been saying, what
:58:43. > :58:48.are you doing? You should have won this comfortably. He stuck in there.
:58:49. > :58:54.I think he was surprised by what James Ward had to offer. He came out
:58:55. > :58:58.of the blocks very fast. He levelled it at one set all and I think he was
:58:59. > :59:00.surprised by that and I think he realised he had to focus a lot
:59:01. > :59:50.harder. It's been another really strong Dave
:59:51. > :01:09.its Cup showing from James Ward. What a player he is. Swerve on that
:01:10. > :01:17.mid court forehand midway through that. A deserved winner, Fabio
:01:18. > :01:20.Fognini. Great to watch. Italy ahead in the tie. It took four sets, but
:01:21. > :01:32.he got there in the end. From a British point of view, Andy
:01:33. > :01:58.Murray always said he'd be back in. In the last few years, Britain's
:01:59. > :02:03.found the player! Could be all down to him on Sunday.
:02:04. > :02:06.A lot of ten noise be played before then. -- tennis to be played before
:02:07. > :02:28.then. Italian celebrations. Two singles wins in Argentina at the
:02:29. > :02:35.start of the year, followed by one on home clay. Find out in due course
:02:36. > :02:42.whether that injury is hampering him at all and might put him in danger
:02:43. > :02:47.of missing the doubles there was that swerving forehand I talked
:02:48. > :02:50.about. How about that as a shot to finish the match? ! Oh, yes, I'm
:02:51. > :03:23.good aren't I! Be in no doubt what a good player
:03:24. > :03:27.Fognini is. He'll be seen at the French Open. He's the kind of player
:03:28. > :03:34.not too many players are going to want to meet during the course of
:03:35. > :03:37.that competition. This weekend, it's Davis quarter-final Cup weekend. The
:03:38. > :03:41.game in Japan is done because they are eight hours ahead of us and the
:03:42. > :03:47.Czech Republic are two to the good there after victories for Russell
:03:48. > :03:52.and Stepanek. Germany one up against France, Tsonga on court at the
:03:53. > :03:56.moment for the French and Jonathan was mentioning that Wawrinka's lost
:03:57. > :04:01.in the first match for Switzerland. Federer's going on court for the
:04:02. > :04:05.second match for the Swiss against Kazakhstan. Talking of second
:04:06. > :04:08.matches, we can tell you that Andy Murray will be on court we think in
:04:09. > :04:18.probably about 15 minutes' time or so for the second match. This time
:04:19. > :04:25.against Andrey. James Ward, he's one of the players who a lot of players
:04:26. > :04:29.we have seen at Queen's. People think, he's kind of a One Trick
:04:30. > :04:34.Pony. But he's shown he's a lot more than that? It's the best match I've
:04:35. > :04:38.ever seen him play. Put into context of who he played against, where they
:04:39. > :04:43.played, the surface they played against and he was toe-to-toe with
:04:44. > :04:47.him for three sets. I thought he was absolutely brilliant and showing
:04:48. > :04:50.what a fine Davis Cup player he is, plays above his level and he has to
:04:51. > :04:56.play like that in regular tournaments and he'll zone up the
:04:57. > :05:00.rankings. Some are great players from absolutely nothing? Yes. He was
:05:01. > :05:04.able to take any confidence he got from the beginning. He got up to an
:05:05. > :05:08.early break, was able to dominate and take his chances. He knew that
:05:09. > :05:15.he was going to get more and more chances because Fognini was
:05:16. > :05:20.volatile. It's good to see he's got that shot-making, even on a slow
:05:21. > :05:25.court in Italy. As far as his on pent, that was the most wonderful
:05:26. > :05:29.touch in the second set, that drop shot. But his opponent has a
:05:30. > :05:34.remarkable record on clay and you kind of felt, once we went into a
:05:35. > :05:39.fourth set that perhaps the balance of power shifted inexorably away
:05:40. > :05:43.from James? Once he lost the third set, he did feel like even though
:05:44. > :05:48.Fognini was mentally up down, that's to put it mildly, and is giving his
:05:49. > :05:53.poor Captain complete nightmares, he didn't know how to handle it for a
:05:54. > :05:56.while. Once he got the third set, within the match change, you never
:05:57. > :06:00.know with him, you don't know what you are seeing. Having said that, if
:06:01. > :06:04.it comes to the Murray match, mentally he'll be totally different
:06:05. > :06:08.because he'll go on there knowing he can't afford the lapses. Against
:06:09. > :06:12.James Ward, he went on court thinking it would be a comfortable
:06:13. > :06:16.match and took James Ward for granted a little bit. He's a unique
:06:17. > :06:19.personality in tennis where there are lots of people who you could
:06:20. > :06:23.perhaps describe as grey and beige. He's full of colour and you were
:06:24. > :06:29.telling us when we were having the break for rain, about how you played
:06:30. > :06:33.him in a doubles match in Indian Wells. Yes. He doesn't even look
:06:34. > :06:41.like he's that ready sometimes. He's at the net, singing singing around
:06:42. > :06:45.in the crowd. Before I know it, he's put a volley away for a winner. This
:06:46. > :06:52.guy was looking at the crowd a second ago, so he looks very relaxed
:06:53. > :07:01.and he's very kind of just a comfortable and confident player.
:07:02. > :07:05.Great touch of the net. Flashing winners as well. He's brilliant.
:07:06. > :07:09.When you look at his game, there's so many strengths he has that you
:07:10. > :07:14.can see he'd be a nightmare to play on any surface, particularly clay.
:07:15. > :07:18.James Ward, the touch he has, I mean around the net you can see why he's
:07:19. > :07:22.such a good doubles player. He can do everything and he's so quick
:07:23. > :07:25.around the court. The weapons, he's got big weapons on the court and
:07:26. > :07:29.he's just so quick. I love to watch him.
:07:30. > :07:35.I think it's also worth saying that when we talk about sport sports
:07:36. > :07:40.needing personalities these days, his reaction on match point, as
:07:41. > :07:45.Jonathan said, he said, yes, I know I'm good. It's hard not to warm to
:07:46. > :07:52.someone with a personality like that. He won the first set in this
:07:53. > :07:56.match and he was going nuts. No-one knows what he was going nuts about.
:07:57. > :08:01.He know hes. He has the gesture, he goes nuts and then smiles and laughs
:08:02. > :08:05.and comes up with a ridiculous win. We want people like that. In
:08:06. > :08:09.reality, Britain will have expected, although nobody will have said, to
:08:10. > :08:13.have lost that opening rubber. Are we any further on in deciding the
:08:14. > :08:19.destination of this tie than we would have been three hours ago? Not
:08:20. > :08:22.so sure, but I think we've actually helped ourselves. I think they are
:08:23. > :08:27.going to be looking and thinking, James Ward is no pushover. He's
:08:28. > :08:34.taken an exceptional play tore four sets and if he has to go against
:08:35. > :08:38.Seppi, he won't be feeling that comfortable. He's seen this guy can
:08:39. > :08:42.play, so he's helped himself. However, we'll see what happens in
:08:43. > :08:51.the other singles matches and the doubles match. Still a long way to
:08:52. > :08:54.go. People asking what is the state of play presuming the match against
:08:55. > :09:01.Murray and Seppi does not finish tonight. If it doesn't finish,
:09:02. > :09:04.they'll have to start it at 9. 30 in the morning and play the doubles
:09:05. > :09:08.match after that. That is 4 o'clockish or so. I'm guessing
:09:09. > :09:13.there's two-and-a-half hours or so of daylight available over there.
:09:14. > :09:18.It's unlikely you are going to finish a match on clay in
:09:19. > :09:24.two-and-a-half hours. Given the fact that both players, talking in Andy
:09:25. > :09:29.Murray's terms, he'll know he won't finish the game tonight, it's one of
:09:30. > :09:33.the key things not to rush and beat your opponent? Absolutely. You've
:09:34. > :09:37.got to be careful with that because obviously you're conscious of the
:09:38. > :09:41.fact Andy Murray doesn't want to play two matches tomorrow. Mentally
:09:42. > :09:45.you have to focus and you come down after a big win and refocus for a
:09:46. > :09:50.doubles ride afterwards so he wants to win and get it over with tonight.
:09:51. > :09:54.But if he rushes and on clay you can't do that, he can find himself
:09:55. > :09:59.with more problems, so he's got to make it business point-by-point and
:10:00. > :10:04.try and play as much as he can. If he can get a win early great. Here
:10:05. > :10:10.is the winner of the first in Naples today.
:10:11. > :10:15.Fabio, many congratulations. You had to play very well after James Ward
:10:16. > :10:23.made his start, particularly after the first two sets? I was sure that
:10:24. > :10:32.yesterday, it was a really important point for us because, of course, you
:10:33. > :10:36.have nothing to lose. Without playing well, feeling good, I won
:10:37. > :10:40.the match. Happy for that and also for my team and Italy for sure. You
:10:41. > :10:48.are being held together at the moment by quite a lot of the white
:10:49. > :10:59.tape here on the rib? You know, it's still the same pain. I feel pain but
:11:00. > :11:06.I can play, that's important. I didn't feel great about my tennis
:11:07. > :11:19.today but I think mentally I was really strong. I feel a bit better
:11:20. > :11:22.and my game was good. This is great for Italian tennis. What did you
:11:23. > :11:26.think about the course? Particularly in the corners where it was quite
:11:27. > :11:30.damp? You didn't look like you were impressed that you were playing? No,
:11:31. > :11:35.for me, I'll just tell you it's a bad court, of course. In the morning
:11:36. > :11:40.we start late but, I mean, sorry, guys, it's not my fault if the
:11:41. > :11:47.course is like this, water coming up after the storm today of rain. It's
:11:48. > :11:51.difficult. It's good that we play here, but we have to thank all the
:11:52. > :11:59.people that working here because it's not easy, but they have to
:12:00. > :12:03.understand it's difficult to stop every point and continue to play
:12:04. > :12:11.after. Do you think the match started too early?
:12:12. > :12:16.I mean, normally, I like to sleep so no, I mean I've no idea about that.
:12:17. > :12:21.Sometimes we start at 2 because maybe you play in the day more times
:12:22. > :12:28.with light. Sometimes we have to start early because we have no
:12:29. > :12:34.light. We had a bit of luck today because it's OK now after the rain
:12:35. > :12:39.coming. We Ethiopia finish the second match and of course, I have
:12:40. > :12:44.to be ready for playing tomorrow. You can go and enjoy match number
:12:45. > :12:49.two. Very well played. Thank you. Thank you. Italy 1, Great Britain 0
:12:50. > :12:52.and Fognini one suspects will be back tomorrow playing in what is
:12:53. > :12:56.often a decisive doubles. We have talked about sporting Great
:12:57. > :13:00.Britain and tennis in particular. It's off an sport people perceive as
:13:01. > :13:04.only played in certain communities and is excluded to others. There is
:13:05. > :13:10.Anish tifr taking place in Birmingham to try to disprove that.
:13:11. > :13:15.Phil Jones has been to see it. It's a cold, damp day in inner city
:13:16. > :13:21.Birmingham. We are at the heart of the Sikh community. Anyone for ten
:13:22. > :13:27.us? -- tennis? These children are part of a ten nice pilot scheme
:13:28. > :13:32.aiming to take the sport into non-traditional areas. One of the
:13:33. > :13:37.pioneering tennis activators is making the planwork. I was brought
:13:38. > :13:42.up around here. We only got involved in certain sports, but now, with the
:13:43. > :13:47.help of the tennis foundation and the LTA, they are helping fund
:13:48. > :13:51.projects like this. It's absolutely brilliant what is happening here at
:13:52. > :13:55.the primary school. The thing is, we want to make tennis for accessible
:13:56. > :14:00.for people. It's a sport for anyone, of any age, ability, background. We
:14:01. > :14:04.felt that, especially with certain communities, we were not getting
:14:05. > :14:10.involved as much. Especially at the Asian community, it's always, let's
:14:11. > :14:16.go to an education background or to become a doctor or a nurse or a
:14:17. > :14:21.pharmacist. There are 600 of the new tennis coaches who've been through
:14:22. > :14:25.fast-track low-cost programmes. The programme's been really successful
:14:26. > :14:30.in getting people like Bal involved in the game. It's given him the
:14:31. > :14:34.basic skills to do the session. It's almost turning things on its head by
:14:35. > :14:39.saying instead of expecting them to go to the sport, the sport goes to
:14:40. > :14:46.the community. The scheme's now set to be rolled out nationally after
:14:47. > :14:53.these eight areas. The key is locking out the enthusiasm and
:14:54. > :15:02.turning it into tennis. You get to learn and play. You play matches
:15:03. > :15:10.together. I like doing that fore forehand and back hand. I hope to
:15:11. > :15:14.learn tennis and become better. We want more people delivering tennis
:15:15. > :15:19.in the community. This is exactly what we want. The who have whole
:15:20. > :15:25.emphasis, it's them having fun. It makes me want to keep doing things
:15:26. > :15:28.like this and keep setting up different projects. At the end of
:15:29. > :15:33.the day, if they are not smiling, I'm not smiling.
:15:34. > :15:39.John, you have been critical on more than one occasion in the past about
:15:40. > :15:42.the LTA and its ability to get people playing the game. You must
:15:43. > :15:47.welcome that whole heartedly? Absolutely. Anything that can get
:15:48. > :15:52.more kids playing this great sport we have, I don't think we promote it
:15:53. > :15:55.enough world-wise, that tennis is a game for life, but you have got to
:15:56. > :16:00.start people young. It's not an easy game to learn, especially if you
:16:01. > :16:04.take it up too late. You get them playing young, it's a game for life,
:16:05. > :16:07.one of the sports you can play until you're 100 and it's a great sport
:16:08. > :16:14.and we should try to get more kids out. A slightly random question,
:16:15. > :16:17.maybe for people who're starting or maybe who aren't very good and if
:16:18. > :16:21.you are not very good at something, you need something ex-that that
:16:22. > :16:24.makes you continue to persevere with the sport, but you hire a council
:16:25. > :16:28.tennis court for an hour or whatever, the likelihood is that you
:16:29. > :16:31.are going to spend 45 minutes picking the ball up from the back of
:16:32. > :16:34.the court because you are not going to be involved in long rallies
:16:35. > :16:38.because you haven'ted got the technique and the coaching costs too
:16:39. > :16:42.much so therefore you go round in a circle and after a while it gets
:16:43. > :16:48.dull fetching a ball from over a fence. How to you square that circle
:16:49. > :16:52.or don't you? That's the probably about tennis. We had a boom 15 or 20
:16:53. > :16:57.years ago. People started picking up the game but they found it was very
:16:58. > :17:00.difficult to learn, as you said, to go on the court with your mate and
:17:01. > :17:06.you start hitting balls and just picking up the balls because it's
:17:07. > :17:11.tough to get the technique so we need more coaching at park and club
:17:12. > :17:18.level so people can get the techniques. Even if you had small
:17:19. > :17:23.squads to get as many demiedz and even just feeting a tonne of balls,
:17:24. > :17:28.so that they get ball and go round in a circle that. 's how I grew up
:17:29. > :17:32.playing it -- as many kids. It's a social thing, as well as playing a
:17:33. > :17:39.new sport. Any way of making it cheaper? In England, it's not easy.
:17:40. > :17:43.The facilities indoors, someone's got to pay for them. That's the
:17:44. > :17:46.problem. The weather in the States or Australia, they don't have that
:17:47. > :17:49.problem because you have got the Wetheral year round, you can play
:17:50. > :17:53.anywhere, outdoor courts, no problem in. Britain, it's not that easy to
:17:54. > :18:00.do that. I don't know quite how they are going to come up with that. It's
:18:01. > :18:03.not an easy problem to have. We can see the pictures from Naples. The
:18:04. > :18:10.ballboys have come on court, so we'll expect Andy Murray there very,
:18:11. > :18:14.very shortly. Do you think it's a ridiculous assertion to think that
:18:15. > :18:18.in ten years' time, British tennis could be ride ago crest of the wave
:18:19. > :18:22.numerically off the back of what Andy Murray achieved specifically
:18:23. > :18:26.last year but mainly during the course of the his career. Can he act
:18:27. > :18:32.as a one-man talisman for the sport as a whole? I think so. I think so.
:18:33. > :18:37.If it's harnessed the right way, I think people can use him as someone
:18:38. > :18:42.they can look up to and see what a great job he's done and what a great
:18:43. > :18:46.life he's got that. 's the thing people can say spire to. If a boy
:18:47. > :18:50.from Dunblane Scotland can achieve that, so can I, you know. It's
:18:51. > :18:54.difficult when you see people from America or different countries, you
:18:55. > :18:58.don't know what they've been through, but someone like Andy going
:18:59. > :19:03.to the same schools as the kids do in England or in Scotland, you know,
:19:04. > :19:11.these same kind of things happen, so it gives them home. I agree. It
:19:12. > :19:14.happened in Germany with Becker and Graf. No question after the
:19:15. > :19:18.Wimbledon win that we'll get more younger kids picking up the game,
:19:19. > :19:21.the younger kids that have a hero now, instead of always thinking
:19:22. > :19:29.about the football and rugby and the sports that we are associated with.
:19:30. > :19:32.The Wimbledon win for Andy Murray was huge near reason and I would be
:19:33. > :19:37.shocked if we don't get a boom out of it. If it's handled the right
:19:38. > :19:41.way, it should improve in getting more people playing it. Andy
:19:42. > :19:48.Murray's next coach. Who is going to to be? Who are the runners and
:19:49. > :19:52.riders? For me, it's got to be two categories, a Grand Slam winner if
:19:53. > :19:57.he's going to pick a tennis playing coach, so to speak, or it's going to
:19:58. > :20:05.be a super coach, who's been with players who've won with slams. So
:20:06. > :20:10.who are the potentials? Sam brass? Sam brass I don't think would do it.
:20:11. > :20:16.Agassi I don't think. Jimmy connorth-west perhaps. --
:20:17. > :20:21.connorth-west perhaps. Jimmy Connors coaching Andy. It would be fiery!
:20:22. > :20:26.Andy's been through a few coaches in his time, the fair to say. Yes. He
:20:27. > :20:31.did tease us by saying he was going to announce his newest coach on
:20:32. > :20:35.April Fools day and that's what it was found out to be, it was an April
:20:36. > :20:40.Fool but Leon Smith at the top of that list there, he of course is the
:20:41. > :20:44.Davis Cup Captain for this tie and has been for the last couple of
:20:45. > :20:52.years in Naples and they go back a long way.
:20:53. > :21:00.Lowian, take us back a few years to when you first started working with
:21:01. > :21:10.Andy at the age of 11. What are your memories -- Leon. I was the young
:21:11. > :21:15.guy going into coaching without any playing history at all. I was very
:21:16. > :21:19.fortunate to have got on with Andy when he was younger. It was probably
:21:20. > :21:22.a good mix, probably having someone young they're could travel with him
:21:23. > :21:28.and have some fun but hopefully get some work done at the same time. For
:21:29. > :21:33.me at the time it worked really well because he was much younger than
:21:34. > :21:40.most tennis coaches, so it was more fun for me to travel with him and,
:21:41. > :21:44.you know, I'm not saying when he was 20 he had loads in common with an
:21:45. > :21:48.11-year-old boy, but once I started to grow up a little more, we used to
:21:49. > :21:52.do a lot of stuff together away from the court and I think that's
:21:53. > :21:57.important at that age in an individual sport. Did he look as
:21:58. > :22:03.presentedable as he does now? No, he was very different back then. A
:22:04. > :22:10.little bit bigger, had a littleering or was it a stud? We don't need to
:22:11. > :22:14.go into that. And some blonde highlights and Spikey hair. You are
:22:15. > :22:19.dealing with one of the very best players in the world, so do you
:22:20. > :22:23.coach andingly a different way to other members of the team? When a
:22:24. > :22:28.Wimbledon champion comes into the team, it gives everyone a huge lift
:22:29. > :22:31.and for all of us, me included, we are always learning, we always know
:22:32. > :22:36.where we sit in terms of world tennis. We are keen to improve. When
:22:37. > :22:41.Andy comes in, we learn so much from him. Andy's got a good tactical
:22:42. > :22:46.brain so it helps us dissect the opponents. Constant dialogue and
:22:47. > :22:51.it's more of that relationship, rather than me telling him how to
:22:52. > :22:56.hit the ball, obviously. What does Leon do as a coach? His record is
:22:57. > :23:03.phenomenally good? He's brought all of the right people in to do their
:23:04. > :23:08.roles. That's something that, as a manager, Captain, you know, whatever
:23:09. > :23:12.it is, it's very important and not always an easy thing to do to get
:23:13. > :23:16.the right personalities and the right people and he's done a very
:23:17. > :23:20.good job. How do conversations go at change events? You are not used to
:23:21. > :23:26.having anybody alongside you at Grand Slams and ATP Tours? How does
:23:27. > :23:31.it work? You need to say what you feel and sometimes it isn't
:23:32. > :23:34.necessary to say anything. Sometimes it is, just, you know, good job or
:23:35. > :23:39.great couple of games or whatever and sometimes when you are sitting
:23:40. > :23:42.on thelet court, Leon might be able to tell you better than me, but it
:23:43. > :23:45.can also be difficult to see things because you are so involved in the
:23:46. > :23:48.match, you are so close to it as well that, having all the guys on
:23:49. > :23:53.the side being able to feel like they can chip in and stuff is also
:23:54. > :23:59.very important. Most of the guys see the game the same way and that's
:24:00. > :24:05.very helpful. Andy Murray talking a couple on days
:24:06. > :24:10.ago in Naples. He's live on court now before his match with Andre
:24:11. > :24:13.Seppi. Very interesting what he said about the relationship with his
:24:14. > :24:16.coach. When you were in that position, at moments of high
:24:17. > :24:19.pressure and made a suggestion, did Andy say, do you know that's a good
:24:20. > :24:24.point you have fleaed, or did he tend to say, I don't agree with you?
:24:25. > :24:29.Well, I could have got out of that pretty well because at the time Brad
:24:30. > :24:33.Gilbert was attached to the team as coach. So when Andy came in, I would
:24:34. > :24:37.say something and if he gave me a look that he didn't agree, I would
:24:38. > :24:44.say, Brad told me. So I'd pass the buck big time. What does a coach of
:24:45. > :24:50.a player of that quality do if we move away from the Davis Cup,
:24:51. > :24:55.whether it's Jimmy connorth-west, I mean we are obviously talking about
:24:56. > :25:01.Djokovic and Federer taking on assistance, but what does a coach do
:25:02. > :25:06.for somebody that's that good? He can try and add a new perspective on
:25:07. > :25:12.how he sees things. Maybe he thinks there is an aspect of his game that
:25:13. > :25:17.rereally needs to work on. He's got that calibre of knowledge that Andy
:25:18. > :25:21.believes in and he's OK, let's look at that, and in Andy's case, maybe
:25:22. > :25:25.he says, let's work on your second serve and make that a bigger serve
:25:26. > :25:29.or maybe he says something else, you know, let's see if we can get you
:25:30. > :25:34.coming to the net more often. That's something that if Andy is going to
:25:35. > :25:38.hire that person, it's someone Andy has to thereon and hopefully it will
:25:39. > :25:43.take his game to another level. A double Grand Slam champion, a
:25:44. > :25:50.Wimbledon champion, has an Achilles heel. But why have successive
:25:51. > :25:54.coaches not been able to address his second serve and why would anybody
:25:55. > :25:59.else coming in be able to do that? I think Lendl has improved his second
:26:00. > :26:04.serve a bit or Andy's improved it when he's been with Lendl. The super
:26:05. > :26:07.coaches, the Grand Slam winners, they have been brought in mainly
:26:08. > :26:11.because it's a funny thing this, you look at the Grand Slam winners and
:26:12. > :26:13.the great champions and you think to yourself that they always are
:26:14. > :26:18.confident, they always believe they are going to win. I know some Grand
:26:19. > :26:21.Slam champions, I lived with one that was pretty good and believe me,
:26:22. > :26:27.they have doubts. I think that someone like Jock witch with Bank of
:26:28. > :26:38.America as an example -- Djokovic with Becker, as an example, I don't
:26:39. > :26:41.think that the right points were played. Becker in his corntering
:26:42. > :26:45.night before, because he's been there and done it, he will have been
:26:46. > :26:52.told certain things. Believe me, they have litling doubts at time
:26:53. > :26:56.times -- little doubts at times, so the coach will have told him,
:26:57. > :26:59.listen, do this, and they are confident enough to tell you, I
:27:00. > :27:02.think it can make a small difference that can win matches. Of course
:27:03. > :27:07.then, that immediately takes you down the path of saying there are so
:27:08. > :27:11.few people who can do that because someone who may have a great
:27:12. > :27:15.pedigree as a coach is a Murray or a Djokovic or a Federer or whoever.
:27:16. > :27:18.Are they going to be listening to people even though they have a great
:27:19. > :27:22.coaching pedigree if they haven't been there as players in the past?
:27:23. > :27:28.If they have a track record of working with the players, let's say
:27:29. > :27:34.someone like Cahill comes in, he's worked with Hewitt and says, listen,
:27:35. > :27:41.I've seen this plenty of times, I've seen this and you have got to trust
:27:42. > :27:50.me and he'll be like OK. Even if your dad sad it to you, it's because
:27:51. > :27:54.it's your dad, he might not listen to you. If it was Tim Cahill, he
:27:55. > :27:58.might not listen to you! We are in the wrong sport, but we know the
:27:59. > :28:04.point you make! Let's talk about this, before the day began we were
:28:05. > :28:09.saying probably 1-1, but this is a hard game for Andy Murray,
:28:10. > :28:13.especially on this surface? And the circumstances, the court being heavy
:28:14. > :28:19.now, the patches in the corners that if Andy slides down there. Also the
:28:20. > :28:24.point is that we are down 1-0. This is an open shoulder type of match.
:28:25. > :28:29.Seppi can go for it big time. Andy knows if he loses, he's lost the
:28:30. > :28:34.tie. The pressure switches. This is why Andy gets the big bucks and this
:28:35. > :28:37.could be a good match. Seppi is a better player than people give
:28:38. > :28:41.credit for. He's awkward looking, gets a bit tight on big occasions
:28:42. > :28:46.sometimes, but in this match, he's got nothing to lose. A good
:28:47. > :28:51.atmosphere towards tend of the match with Fognini. Is Andy the kind of
:28:52. > :28:55.player who will respond to an antagonistic crowd? I think so. I
:28:56. > :28:59.think he'll feed off it. It's not the first time he will have come
:29:00. > :29:02.across a crowd like this, especially when you play at the lower levels of
:29:03. > :29:07.tournaments like challengers. You can get crowds like this where they
:29:08. > :29:11.can get unruly and I think he thrives off that. Some characters
:29:12. > :29:15.love that and I think he is one of them. The louder it gets, the more
:29:16. > :29:20.he's going to be like, do you know what, I'm going to show you guys.
:29:21. > :29:27.I'm a double Grand Slam champion, show minister some respect. Yes. A
:29:28. > :29:32.it's a challenge for him and these kind of players love challenges. I
:29:33. > :29:39.think Andy will love it. We are just about ready to gore for the second
:29:40. > :29:44.of the matches. The Davis Cup quarter-final in Naples. We are
:29:45. > :29:48.likely to get beaten by the light so it's a safe assumption that this
:29:49. > :29:53.match will not be concluded this evening unless one of them runs away
:29:54. > :29:58.with it. We'll start again tomorrow at 9. 30, followed by a doubles
:29:59. > :30:03.match which is so often crucial in the outcome of the Davis Cup ties.
:30:04. > :30:07.Leon Smith looking anxiously to the skies. Let's hope there's not more
:30:08. > :30:10.rain forecast. The reason we are behind schedule is that we had a
:30:11. > :30:15.three-hour break because of torrential rain this morning and
:30:16. > :30:19.that impacted, as you may have heard, on the state of the court. It
:30:20. > :30:38.does look as other we are raring to go.
:30:39. > :30:47.you can. If you have to leave your television set, then, we have
:30:48. > :30:52.continued coverage on Radio 5 Live and across the BBC sport website. So
:30:53. > :30:57.there is no excuse for missing a single ball that is hit during the
:30:58. > :31:01.course of the match between Andy Murray and Andreas Seppi. Seppi
:31:02. > :31:13.going through the last few serves. Let us go back to Jonathan.
:31:14. > :31:19.The referee is in charge of stuff! He is looking up at the clouds,
:31:20. > :31:23.pointing at one in particular, by the look of things.
:31:24. > :31:27.Hopefully, still a fair bit of tennis left in the day. And good to
:31:28. > :31:29.see this man, the Wimbledon champion, back on court for Great
:31:30. > :31:35.Britain. As he was of course in San Diego,
:31:36. > :31:40.just a few weeks ago. Leading the way as Britain beat
:31:41. > :31:48.America, to have this quarter-final tie. They played six times before
:31:49. > :31:52.these two, and Murray has the winning record comfortably. Five
:31:53. > :31:57.wins and one defeat, which was on grass, back in 2006. In Nottingham,
:31:58. > :32:01.the pre-Wimbledon tournament that year, second one of the
:32:02. > :32:05.quarter-finals. Murray has won the last five, including on clay in
:32:06. > :32:11.Rome. 2010. Has experience of beating the
:32:12. > :32:19.Italian in Italy, so something that stacks up in his favour.
:32:20. > :32:28.First match this, since the quarter-final defeat to Novak
:32:29. > :32:31.Djokovic in Miami. Comfortable winner that day, in
:32:32. > :32:36.Florida. Might have seen that controversial incident in the match,
:32:37. > :32:40.where Djokovic got a winner leaning over the net, all over it in ct
:32:41. > :32:43.pact. Didn't seem any doubt that the point should have gone in Murray's
:32:44. > :32:48.favour. One of those where you can't really
:32:49. > :32:59.look back and say that was a massive turning point. But even so. Enough
:33:00. > :33:04.to rile Murray slightly. Switching to the clay, always
:33:05. > :33:11.tricky, it has opinion a peculiar year, Murray has come from the hard
:33:12. > :33:17.courts of Australia to clay, back on to the north American hard courts
:33:18. > :33:21.and back on the clay. At least this will lead into the
:33:22. > :33:24.European clay court season, and a string of tournaments building up to
:33:25. > :33:32.the French Open. One of the toughest, gruelling parts of the
:33:33. > :33:37.tennis year. Last year one or two injury issues
:33:38. > :33:50.which came out of row land Garros. Some opportunities this year.
:33:51. > :34:10.To gather some ranking points. This man Seppi, 36 in the world.
:34:11. > :34:19.Actually 34 this yolk. He has been as high as 18. This week.
:34:20. > :34:51.-- this week. Oh dear, that is the corner John,
:34:52. > :34:57.where the problems have come all day, and that is Murray's first
:34:58. > :35:01.experience of the Naples beach. This is what we were worried about. I can
:35:02. > :35:07.see this, just unfortunately out the camera, but that was not good. Here
:35:08. > :35:14.we go. Oh dear. That is what we talked about. It is unfit. It
:35:15. > :35:19.should... Well, it is disgraceful this has happened.
:35:20. > :35:24.It was interesting to hear Fognini upset about it, and clearly not
:35:25. > :35:28.happy about the surface and very professional, I thought, really,
:35:29. > :35:32.that Ward and Fognini should get through that match without great
:35:33. > :35:40.complaint. Yeah, every now they do this and get if guys on the sweep it
:35:41. > :35:45.and amend it. Each would have been within their rights and say this
:35:46. > :35:50.court is not fit for play. -- get the guys. We are not slating
:35:51. > :35:56.the court surface, what you see between the lines there, appears
:35:57. > :36:00.adequate, but the players are at risk of injury. No doubt about that.
:36:01. > :36:04.As Shea slide into the corner They messed up with the cover, the court
:36:05. > :36:11.is not just the line, it is beyond the lines.
:36:12. > :36:17.-- as they. Players these days, they are so defensive capability, they
:36:18. > :36:20.use 10, 12 feet behind the lines and you can't have any position on the
:36:21. > :36:25.court where you can't slide in, look, you can see, now he has that
:36:26. > :36:33.in his mind about moving and it is sun fit, the covers did not protect
:36:34. > :36:40.the court, the whole court. And, you know, whoever did the, the, there
:36:41. > :36:49.should be a fine or there should be problems with it.
:36:50. > :36:53.This is one way to deal with the situation. Step inside the court.
:36:54. > :37:37.Chip and charge. Leather it! We were talking with John about the
:37:38. > :37:43.role of the captain, this is where Leon Smith needs to say a few wise
:37:44. > :37:46.words and say, it is a problem, we know that, but keep your cool. Don't
:37:47. > :37:59.let it aggravate you, because this is is a match we have to win. Yes.
:38:00. > :38:03.Murray, to his credit, continues to mature by the year, following him
:38:04. > :38:09.throughout his career, close quarter, it has been noticeable that
:38:10. > :38:13.extra maturity, almost every time Christmas passes by and you meet for
:38:14. > :38:14.a New Year, a bit of extra few more years on the clock.
:38:15. > :38:44.It happens to all of us! It was interesting the way Seppi
:38:45. > :38:50.moved on that wide forehand. He sort of made a slight, if you watch this
:38:51. > :38:55.here, watch, he kind of sort of jabs at the movement he takes one little,
:38:56. > :39:10.there, he was scared to commit himself and push off on that ball.
:39:11. > :39:15.That is the advantage Murray has, the serve, he can get cheap points
:39:16. > :39:19.on his serve. Seppi very rarely, not a particularly big serve, and Murray
:39:20. > :39:32.can certainly get a couple of freebies in a lot of game.
:39:33. > :39:41.You never know what is going to happen when the ball hits the net.
:39:42. > :40:16.It can do that, sit up and say "Smack me where ever you want."
:40:17. > :40:24.Well e the extra complication of the sun coming out, practically for the
:40:25. > :40:28.first time before, before that point. -- well, the extra
:40:29. > :40:39.complication. Seemed to affect Murray more on the sever than Seppi
:40:40. > :41:08.with that smash, but... You won't find that in any coaching manual.
:41:09. > :41:14.That is a beautiful shot. Can open up the court well with it. You have
:41:15. > :41:17.to hit it well when you are playing somebody like Murray. He is one of
:41:18. > :41:44.the best defenders but that shot is a weapon.
:41:45. > :41:52.Neat serve from Murray. Olympic Games winning serve, if I
:41:53. > :41:56.remember rightly. Seppi, 18 in the world as I
:41:57. > :42:01.mentioned just over a year ago, has finished the last two seasons inside
:42:02. > :42:38.the world top 25. Very very handy player.
:42:39. > :42:43.Looking at it from his point of view. He has the chance to be the
:42:44. > :42:47.hero. Come out here and beat Andy Murray. Italy are 2-0 up. That is
:42:48. > :43:14.practically tie over. He needs something to get his year
:43:15. > :43:19.going, not the best, only four wins from 12 matches for Seppi. Hasn't
:43:20. > :43:27.won successive matches all year, but he has come up against some tough
:43:28. > :43:29.opponent, the like of Ferrer, Stanislas Wawrinka. Thomas Berdych
:43:30. > :43:57.in Rotterdam. Lost the Australian Open to don nand
:43:58. > :44:03.Young, a main you may have seen during our coverage of the last
:44:04. > :44:49.Davis Cup tie. -- Donald Young. That serve certainly can be hit. It
:44:50. > :44:54.sits up there a little bit. Murray inside the baseline, they have taken
:44:55. > :45:03.that one on the rice rise, maybe a tactic we will see a lot more of
:45:04. > :45:08.during the match. -- rise. Nice way to close out the game for Andreas
:45:09. > :45:15.Seppi. He leads two games to one in the opening set.
:45:16. > :45:19.I don't think either John or myself will forget where we were when Andy
:45:20. > :45:25.Murray won Wimbledon last summer, because we were live on the radio,
:45:26. > :45:29.on five. But where were you? We would like to know because we are
:45:30. > :45:32.making a documentary for BBC television that will go out before
:45:33. > :45:38.Murray's defence of his Wimbledon title this summer, we want you to
:45:39. > :45:44.share your experiences of that momentous day. Particularly if you
:45:45. > :45:48.have any, text, traffic or video footage of how you celebrated, maybe
:45:49. > :45:54.you were in a strange place, maybe you were in a hot-air balloon or
:45:55. > :46:01.watching on a TV somewhere slightly quirky. You can text us, or get
:46:02. > :46:10.involved, on social media, using the hashtag Murray memories. You can
:46:11. > :46:20.e-mail us as well. Murray memories at beak.co.uk.
:46:21. > :46:24.-- We will put the programme together but you might have stuff on
:46:25. > :46:27.your phone that you have said to your mates for half a year, wouldn't
:46:28. > :46:37.it be amazing if we could get that on the BBC? Here is your chance.
:46:38. > :46:41.Murray memories. Incidentally, the 5 Live documentary
:46:42. > :46:47.that was made on a similar subject, the day we won Wimbledon, has just
:46:48. > :46:52.been nominated for two radio Academy Awards, so good luck to it. The
:46:53. > :47:15.ceremony is next month. It wasn't half bad.
:47:16. > :49:31.That was a shooter, we saw a few of those in the first match.
:49:32. > :49:37.Some welly behind that serve: The other was more the agile he hit down
:49:38. > :49:41.the middle. There is that, that advantage of having a serve like
:49:42. > :49:52.that, you can get a couple of free point, most service game, it takes a
:49:53. > :50:34.lot of pressure off you. -- games.
:50:35. > :50:38.That one, dead net call. These are the ones you love as a player, if
:50:39. > :52:48.you hit them of course. Good point for the Italian. He back
:52:49. > :52:57.with a brilliant foreof his own to get back in the rally. He is playing
:52:58. > :53:22.well. -- foreof.
:53:23. > :53:32.Oh! What a disappointing end that was, what a point!
:53:33. > :53:37.What a shot across court. It was unbelievable. How did he get that
:53:38. > :53:40.over? Considering it is from the awkward corner of the court, here we
:53:41. > :53:45.go. It is coming up now isn't it. . This
:53:46. > :53:52.one. Unbelievable. He deserved the point after that shot and he missed
:53:53. > :53:57.the easiest ball of the whole rally. That is a break point and it Faw
:53:58. > :54:02.falls to Italy and Andreas Seppi. He is taking his time. He wanted to
:54:03. > :54:22.recharge the batteries to hit a big first serve here.
:54:23. > :54:29.He will probably go down the middle. Oh, what an opportunity. Too many
:54:30. > :54:55.option on that forehand. It is hard work already isn't it!
:54:56. > :55:01.We're only in game four. It is good play that that Murray has
:55:02. > :55:06.developed, in the last few years. Sliding the serve out t across
:55:07. > :55:10.court. Game is quite simple isn't it, when you break it down It has
:55:11. > :55:15.become a lot better that sever. He used to favour a few years back the
:55:16. > :55:17.one down the middle on the forehand side and he has worked that one out
:55:18. > :55:43.wide very well these days. Well, it is not going to be easy and
:55:44. > :55:54.it is not going to be over quickly. It might be attritional. Murray
:55:55. > :56:00.knows this is a stern test. Murray's team-mate is back,
:56:01. > :56:05.recharged, refuelled. I think I am ready to perform now!
:56:06. > :56:31.BBC sandwich? Gluten free. Give us a sense of Andy Murray,
:56:32. > :56:39.Davis Cup, requests have been raises about how it is important to him.
:56:40. > :56:45.How much did it mean to him? #4e really wants to do well as Davis
:56:46. > :56:51.Cup, he sees it as apse opportunity to add another gem to the Crown.
:56:52. > :56:57.As in win it? The whole thing? Absolutely. Absolutely. You know,
:56:58. > :57:00.otherwise I don't think he would be as interested in helping team. Let
:57:01. > :57:04.us take that back, he always wants to help the team. He believes this
:57:05. > :57:10.team can win. If he can win two singles matches, in the doubles
:57:11. > :57:22.there is a possibility. James Ward could help out or Dan Evans.
:57:23. > :57:27.He is very keen to do it, I think, you know he has won slams He has won
:57:28. > :57:31.an Olympic Gold. The only thing that evades him is a Davis Cup title,
:57:32. > :57:33.much like Roger Federer, so I think that is the reason he wants to play
:57:34. > :57:47.and do well for the country as well. Working again in that corner of the
:57:48. > :58:19.court. Murray is holding his lower back a
:58:20. > :58:23.little bit. I don't know if just a little niggle, but I just, he has
:58:24. > :58:38.done that for a couple of points now.
:58:39. > :58:46.I think with, after surgery, you are always going to have some kind of
:58:47. > :58:51.resonate pain, even if is not a major issue, he will have that,
:58:52. > :58:55.especially if it's a colder day, nothing too bads but speaking from
:58:56. > :59:00.experience when I had any knee surgery, this was a couple of years
:59:01. > :59:05.ago, sometimes it bothers me own a colder day or a longer day of
:59:06. > :59:12.training, so you are like, "That is a bit stiff," but hopefully nothing
:59:13. > :59:17.too serious to worry about. Sitting next to a worldwide authorities in
:59:18. > :59:22.knee injuries. I feel like that every day after a day of training.
:59:23. > :59:32.Getting up from the Couch, it is really a struggle big time!
:59:33. > :59:38.quality tennis already. They have both come out of the starting
:59:39. > :59:41.blocks, They are both really important to this match but for
:59:42. > :59:48.different purposes. Seppi's got nothing to lose. It's a Davis Cup
:59:49. > :59:54.match of course. He's going up against a two Grand Slam winner.
:59:55. > :59:56.Murray realises he has to win this cup or the Davis Cup is over. It's
:59:57. > :00:36.what makes it fun. 50 love.
:00:37. > :00:41.Lovely service motion that Murray has. Great rhythm.
:00:42. > :00:45.He's improved his first serve percentages in the last couple of
:00:46. > :00:49.years which was huge for him. Always had a big serve. There was a time
:00:50. > :01:02.when he was 30, 40% sometimes in big matches.
:01:03. > :01:17.Good drop shot and Seppi was on to it in a flash.
:01:18. > :03:34.Three hour, possibly more, this is not easy.
:03:35. > :03:39.He was all right when he went into the official dinner on Wednesday
:03:40. > :03:47.night in Naples. He wasn't so hot when he came out of it. Spent much
:03:48. > :03:53.of yesterday in the hotel in his room, came out for a hit early
:03:54. > :03:55.evening yesterday. He didn't make an appearance at the
:03:56. > :04:36.draw ceremony. What a a point. What a point! Talk
:04:37. > :04:41.about variety. Different height that Seppi had to
:04:42. > :04:45.play so many of the balls. Hits the high loopy forehand, and then the
:04:46. > :04:51.vicious slice. That one's coming down by the ankles. He finishes off
:04:52. > :04:55.with a chop, cross court drop shot that perfectly was disguised. That's
:04:56. > :05:00.one of the reasons why he's so difficult to beat. Must be a
:05:01. > :05:05.nightmare to play against. Big opportunity here to get the
:05:06. > :06:15.first break. Did well in the end, but there was a
:06:16. > :06:18.slice of good fortune in that. Well improvised.
:06:19. > :06:41.You would have taken that, John, wouldn't you? Oh, what a shot!
:06:42. > :06:51.Way, way long. Unable to control the volley. And Murray breaks for a 4-3
:06:52. > :06:58.in the opening set. -- 4-3 lead in the opening set.
:06:59. > :07:03.Definitely not the best back hand volley I've seen but Andy will take
:07:04. > :07:14.it, I'm sure. He's working hard. He looks like
:07:15. > :07:17.he's breathing pretty heavily. Yes.
:07:18. > :07:24.Such an important part of these professional athletes' lives. The
:07:25. > :07:27.sports drinks, the premixed drinks that the physios will sort out in
:07:28. > :07:32.the locker rooms before the matches and the energy bars and everything.
:07:33. > :07:39.It's an exact science, Dom, these die, isn't it? Absolutely. I mean,
:07:40. > :07:46.you'll have your trainer telling you exact think rate of fluid loss that
:07:47. > :07:50.you have -- exact science, Dom, these days, isn't it? Bull told,
:07:51. > :07:58.that's your drink for the first set? That's right. He has the replacement
:07:59. > :08:04.in the first bottle, in the second bottle, they'll add it so there's
:08:05. > :08:13.more of the vitamin they need in the second water so it gets more corn
:08:14. > :08:18.concentrated as the day goes along, then some gel for carbohydrate and
:08:19. > :08:23.sugar levels to maintain performance at a steady rate. Any dips, it's so
:08:24. > :08:26.physical, any dips in performance can result in a break and that could
:08:27. > :08:33.be the end of the set just because he had a little dip.
:08:34. > :08:39.Doesn't taste as good as Robinson's Barley water like we used to have
:08:40. > :08:50.and steak and chips an hour before you play. Come on, seriously!
:08:51. > :08:55.Not to mention what we had the night before. Different world but none the
:08:56. > :08:58.worse for it, John. We loved it in your day. As long as it worked and
:08:59. > :10:18.it seemed to work. A slow clay court, that's pretty
:10:19. > :11:02.useful to have that, the three points.
:11:03. > :12:24.Serve tonne stay in the first set. -- seven to stay in the first set.
:12:25. > :12:32.Couple of bounces at that point. Shows that the court is not as
:12:33. > :12:34.straight as would be liked. But it's part of the troubles and the
:12:35. > :13:04.difficulties you have on clay. Murray is defending so well.
:13:05. > :13:12.Starting to overcook a few of these ground strokes. The pressure is on
:13:13. > :13:16.you to make it a lit bit better -- little bit better than your comfort
:13:17. > :14:00.zone. Murray is so difficult to get the ball past.
:14:01. > :14:07.Uncharacteristic. Sensible with that shot selection. Was he trying for a
:14:08. > :14:45.drop shot there? Very strange the way he hit that.
:14:46. > :15:14.Well, it's 5. 15 and a lot of you will be tuning in to watch vintage
:15:15. > :15:16.Antiques Roadshow but I'm sure you will understand that we can't leave
:15:17. > :15:19.this match in the early stages because it's absolutely crucial to
:15:20. > :15:22.the destination of this quarter-final match in the Davis Cup
:15:23. > :15:25.between Great Britain and Italy. Italy are one match to the good at
:15:26. > :15:29.the moment, and if you are not a great tennis fan, not sure about the
:15:30. > :15:34.Davis Cup, the last time Great Britain got to this stage of the
:15:35. > :15:42.competition, Andy Murray wasn't even born and the days of Fred Perry was
:15:43. > :15:53.when we last won it in 1936, 78 years ago.
:15:54. > :16:02.Owe are eight hours ahead with us. -- Tokyo.
:16:03. > :16:08.Tsonga is a set to the good in the second.
:16:09. > :16:15.Fognini beat Ward 3-1 in the opening match of this tie and Wawrinka, the
:16:16. > :16:31.Australian Open champion was beat none the opening tie in Geneva.
:16:32. > :16:58.Andy Murray. Few things to bear in mind, change of surface coming from
:16:59. > :17:02.the North American hard courts on to European clay for this match. He
:17:03. > :17:09.will have trained in bright sunshine and hot temperatures, but now he's
:17:10. > :17:13.playing a little cooler. Not an ideal court surface, as you
:17:14. > :17:18.can see. That is putting it mildly. Also the fact he was laid up in bed
:17:19. > :17:23.all day yesterday with a stomach bug. So all things considered,
:17:24. > :17:46.haven't even mentioned his opponent. He's come up with big serves almost
:17:47. > :20:08.every time he's needed to. Wins the first set 6-4.
:20:09. > :20:34.Very, very solid professional performance from him.
:20:35. > :20:51.A big name in the Italian Army in the First World War, Mr Diaz. There
:20:52. > :20:56.he is. Looking pretty sharp today, Sir!
:20:57. > :21:00.He was a General in the Italian Army, born in Naples. She's never
:21:01. > :21:14.heard of him but she doesn't care, she's got a flag! Additional
:21:15. > :21:51.analysis and stats for you. We have a few messages from you to
:21:52. > :21:59.our e-mail address. It's going to be a very pleasant evening by the Bay
:22:00. > :22:04.of Naples. Stephan, the man in the glasses to the right, he's the
:22:05. > :22:08.referee in charge of the tie. Pascal is the umpire and a couple of
:22:09. > :22:10.ballboys are having a chat. Presumably that guy to the left is
:22:11. > :22:19.the Head of Ballboys. Thoughts it would be weather
:22:20. > :22:22.related. Doesn't seem to be a problem.
:22:23. > :22:27.Got a fair bit of tennis left in the day's play the way the sun is
:22:28. > :22:40.shining down there. Seppi was coming at him. Couple of
:22:41. > :22:46.service games. He was a bit close. But he just sort of basically keeps
:22:47. > :22:52.work working, keeps hanging in there and then eventually his opponent
:22:53. > :22:58.tries too much. So difficult to break down and Murray gets on with
:22:59. > :23:04.what he has to do, then the pressure switches. His opponent then can't
:23:05. > :23:14.make enough balls or goes for too many shots. He wins the first set.
:23:15. > :23:20.Difficult. He anticipates as much as anybody and he's as quick as
:23:21. > :24:11.anybody. Murray might not be the best in the
:24:12. > :24:18.world at shots like that. But he pulls out a slide and lands an
:24:19. > :24:22.innotch front to have of the baseline and suddenly he's in front.
:24:23. > :24:38.He's probably the best at that shot. It gets him into so many points.
:24:39. > :25:52.Crucial game for the Italian here. Daren't go down to an early break.
:25:53. > :25:59.Commentary from Andy Murray there! Been watching a bit too much of
:26:00. > :26:01.Fabio Borini! Enough chance there is for him in that game and I think he
:26:02. > :26:12.knows it. He knows what a dagger blow that
:26:13. > :26:14.would have been to the Italian's hopes if he'd got the early break
:26:15. > :27:20.there, as John mentioned. Pushed further and further back
:27:21. > :28:36.during this rally. Deep beyond that baseline.
:28:37. > :28:43.Serve was good. Forehand even better.
:28:44. > :28:50.Don't underestimate this man, he's got a good record at grinding out
:28:51. > :28:52.good matches if necessary. Two five setters at Wimbledon last
:28:53. > :29:14.summer. That's the sort of shot that must
:29:15. > :29:18.feel good, just that short arm jab of a punch down the line, all about
:29:19. > :29:21.the timing. Absolutely. He timed that really well. He did that
:29:22. > :29:26.earlier in the first set as well. The problem is, you know, when push
:29:27. > :30:17.comes to shove, can you produce that shot?
:30:18. > :30:25.He loves playing those top-spin lobs.
:30:26. > :30:30.Something he told he once he developed a real liking of when he
:30:31. > :30:34.played doubles with his brother, we are talking way back when they were
:30:35. > :30:39.kids, just something about the angle of play, playing with the left hand,
:30:40. > :30:45.he used to get quite a few lobs to play and over on that right side of
:30:46. > :30:52.the court. He is very good and he is good at
:30:53. > :30:57.disguising it. Let us not forget he is an unbelievable dink angle, so
:30:58. > :31:03.you are left coffering a lot of options and you can't cover them
:31:04. > :31:08.all... Every now and again he will hammer down the line as well. --
:31:09. > :32:44.covering. That is staying very low off the
:32:45. > :32:58.clay. Tall man, 6'3.
:32:59. > :33:04.Now 30 years of age. A match, memorable for those of us who were
:33:05. > :33:14.there to see, the French Open, 2012. Had a two set lead on Novak
:33:15. > :33:23.Djokovic. The Serb's come back was in the Fourth Round. Davis Cup's
:33:24. > :33:34.record is 15 win, 15 defeats. -- wins. Definitely the number two
:33:35. > :33:47.singles player. It looks like it is getting pretty
:33:48. > :33:51.dark out there now. Murray would have to rattle through
:33:52. > :35:28.the rest of the set to get a chance of getting it done tonight.
:35:29. > :36:25.How does he do that and miss the one at the end of the first set? That is
:36:26. > :36:32.20 times harder. The serve in second set, two games
:36:33. > :36:36.all, Murray having won the first against Seppi. If you are just
:36:37. > :36:40.getting in from work or maybe Easter holidays are just beginning for you,
:36:41. > :36:45.a terrific start to a busy weekend of sport across the BBC. What a
:36:46. > :36:49.weekend it's going to be, Premier League football, plenty of cricket
:36:50. > :36:52.for you, the Grand National of course, Bahrain Grand Prix, the
:36:53. > :37:22.University Boat Race, whatever takes your fancy you will find it
:37:23. > :37:26.somewhere on BBC sport. Make sure you get the BBC sport app
:37:27. > :37:28.or the iPlayer radio app as well. Great things to keep you in touch on
:37:29. > :37:53.the move. Trying to level at this tie at one
:37:54. > :37:55.all after Fabio Fognini beat James Ward in a terrific match that went
:37:56. > :40:13.four sets. He is really moving Andy round, very
:40:14. > :40:16.measured to pressure. That was probably Murray's worst service
:40:17. > :40:20.game, return service game he has had in the match there. Good point from
:40:21. > :40:24.Seppi in the last one but he went off the boil a bit with his return
:40:25. > :40:28.of serve, it is the first game where he, it is not like he was in the
:40:29. > :40:35.game, but Seppi is playing well, I think, he has just had one lapse in
:40:36. > :40:44.the first, but Murray is, he just keeps on pullingpressure back,
:40:45. > :40:46.making you play one more ball. They are both putting on equal
:40:47. > :40:53.amounts of pressure but Seppi doesn't seem to be getting back as
:40:54. > :40:57.many balls as Andy does, when it comes to the crunch moments Seppi
:40:58. > :41:02.misses because he knows he has to do too much. That is the difference
:41:03. > :41:06.right now. Andy has the benefit of normally getting a couple of free
:41:07. > :41:09.points on his serve, which Seppi generally speaking, hasn't had apart
:41:10. > :41:17.from that last Serb game when Murray's serve went off a bit.
:41:18. > :44:05.A brilliant point. Really brilliant point of tennis and both men played
:44:06. > :44:30.their part in it. The angle. That is another example of Andy
:44:31. > :44:32.getting back that extra ball you don't expect and making, you know,
:44:33. > :45:05.Seppi play one more. He has gone off the boil bait these
:45:06. > :45:11.last couple of games. His level is dropping slightly, you can't afford
:45:12. > :45:16.do that on clay against is one of Seppi's class. -- a bit. He tries to
:45:17. > :45:19.change the pace up and it can be a good play, however, if you start
:45:20. > :45:26.making mistakes because of it, that is when you get frustrated. I think
:45:27. > :45:31.he, you are not being the most solid because you want to change it up.
:45:32. > :45:56.The more he does it the crowd are going to shout at him more.
:45:57. > :46:02.Oh he has put it long. What an opportunity for the Italian to
:46:03. > :46:07.break. That was ra great play, Seppi doesn't really have that wristy shot
:46:08. > :46:12.we saw Fognini playing earlier so he has to just kind of bunt it, but he
:46:13. > :46:17.wants to give it extra pace because you knowings Andy can pass it. He is
:46:18. > :46:21.stuck in two minds, when he has a short forehand that is where the
:46:22. > :46:24.mistakes come from. He doesn't have that ability to brush up, you know
:46:25. > :46:57.under and over the ball. What a second serve, break point
:46:58. > :46:58.down. Seppi did a great effort to get that serve back, after it
:46:59. > :47:47.bounced all over the place. The crowd are smelling a little
:47:48. > :47:59.blood now, they love to get into it. Yes.
:48:00. > :48:26.Break point number three in the game.
:48:27. > :48:36.A little bit negative from ta return of serve.
:48:37. > :48:40.Seppi didn't too much with that one. Think he thought he burnzed on that
:48:41. > :48:44.one, this time he was a bit hesitant about doing the same thing again,
:48:45. > :48:45.that is why he stepped back, and short response isn't going to be
:48:46. > :49:12.good enough against Andy. You are joking, he has owned the net
:49:13. > :49:14.calls in this match. I think that is number three or four, he has won
:49:15. > :50:04.every one of them. Good luck to try and stop them from
:50:05. > :50:11.shouting! Feet seemed lodged in the clay as
:50:12. > :50:18.purry goes a set down. The Italian fight back begins.
:50:19. > :50:22.-- Murray. Murray is feeding the crowd too, once you Saturday doing
:50:23. > :50:26.this stuff with the, you know, the mannerisms and you start, you know,
:50:27. > :50:31.giving all the signs and shouting and all that, the crowd feed off
:50:32. > :50:35.that and they go after you more, the volume now, he has broken serve, but
:50:36. > :50:38.now it is going through the roof. This is what an Italian crowd is
:50:39. > :50:43.normally like, they weren't like that in the first match. It was like
:50:44. > :50:44.they expected the win, now they know their man needs a bit of help and
:50:45. > :51:28.they are going to give it to him. It is the manner in which the crowd
:51:29. > :51:31.get involved. They were were getting involved from Seppi playing well, he
:51:32. > :51:36.would be able to respond, because it is his weaker shots and you know his
:51:37. > :51:39.mistakes he will focus too much on that, than using the crowd that is
:51:40. > :51:45.against him, to fuel him, so I think he is still only focussed on his own
:51:46. > :52:06.shots, and you know, sometimes his mistakes.
:52:07. > :52:12.Handled that shot well, the backhand or forehand is that one inside the
:52:13. > :52:16.service box, where this is the position you want to be in, but this
:52:17. > :52:22.part of the court, but he looks like, as you said he, even on the
:52:23. > :52:37.back end, that little lift to get that ball up and down.
:52:38. > :52:47.As I say he is so different to his Davis Cup team-mate, in that he is
:52:48. > :52:53.very much like an army, as in use of the arm, a very flat kind of player,
:52:54. > :52:58.he doesn't have the hands, the wrist action to get the ball up and down,
:52:59. > :53:21.so Andy is trying to exploit that when he uses that slice.
:53:22. > :53:27.Inconsistencies from Andy Murray at the moment.
:53:28. > :53:31.A satisfying depth to the pack hand, the penultimate shot of that really,
:53:32. > :53:36.that one right there, that one is all over the shop.
:53:37. > :54:48.-- backhand. It doesn't always look that quick on
:54:49. > :54:52.television but that ball was coming at Seppi so fast.
:54:53. > :55:25.Hence the error and he was rushed into the shot.
:55:26. > :55:32.That time net call prompted him out a bit.
:55:33. > :55:40.He seems a lot cooler in this game, John. He has made a conscious effort
:55:41. > :55:45.to keep a little net. The reaction of the crowd at the last change over
:55:46. > :55:55.sparked that. He knew that he had created that atmosphere.
:55:56. > :56:06.Break back point for the Wimbledon champion.
:56:07. > :56:23.He's got it. Well that is a big body blow for the Italian there, 4-2,
:56:24. > :56:27.40-15 and then a few errors. It is not just losing the break, it was
:56:28. > :56:32.the position where he lost the break. Psychologically that is big.
:56:33. > :56:43.That is going to sting. If you think he was going to be 5-2 up, strong
:56:44. > :56:46.favourites to win that set. Yes. Now Andy has the momentum, and I think
:56:47. > :56:51.he is favourite to win this set now. I don't know, you come to Naples,
:56:52. > :56:55.you want to lie on the beach, you want to soak up beautiful sunny
:56:56. > :57:01.afternoon, and you end up with your fleeces and your overcoats and your
:57:02. > :57:05.scarves. It is going to be nice on Sunday if it is any consolation.
:57:06. > :57:08.Great turn out though, in all seriousness from the British fan,
:57:09. > :57:19.nay have taken over that stand to the right of the court.
:57:20. > :57:27.Certainly a large chunk of the first match, out supported, outsung the
:57:28. > :57:32.Italians, took the vocals a good couple of hours to get going today.
:57:33. > :57:41.They did. The wind and the rain a bit of a culture shock.
:57:42. > :57:52.Murray did well, 40-15, staring at a 5-2 deficit. It would have been
:57:53. > :57:57.difficult to get that back. Great players come through in those
:57:58. > :58:04.conditions. The aura of playing against someone
:58:05. > :58:08.when you play against them, that can affect you when you go for too much,
:58:09. > :58:10.or you are not positive enough, whatever the reason, you end up
:58:11. > :58:35.losing the game as Seppi did there. You know what Murray is planning
:58:36. > :58:42.now. Keep up that intensity.
:58:43. > :59:13.Big simple service game, pile the pressure back on.
:59:14. > :01:36.He is going to have one or two things to say about that.
:01:37. > :01:42.If you have switched on to BBC Two to see Revenge of the Egg heads you
:01:43. > :01:49.will understand at this crucial point in the second set we have to
:01:50. > :01:54.stay with it so that will be he scheduled at 4.45 tomorrow. Back to
:01:55. > :02:26.our own Egg Heads. Looking to bit of early pressure on
:02:27. > :02:31.the Seppi serve here, at four all, he knows if he can get the break of
:02:32. > :02:36.serve, he will be serving for two sets to love lead. Don't be fooled
:02:37. > :02:38.by the light coming through your TV from the pictures. It is a lot
:02:39. > :03:05.darker than the pictures suggest. It is possible they might look to
:03:06. > :03:10.finish the set and say you know what, we can finish another set so
:03:11. > :03:19.we will call it there. But both players would have to agree
:03:20. > :03:26.on that. Amazing how Seppi has gone off the boil here, he is
:03:27. > :03:39.psychologically, cost lost that chance a bit. A good effort there
:03:40. > :03:43.but he has been struggling. Good technique on that half-volley,
:03:44. > :03:48.got down so well, so low on that ball. Got out in front and used all
:03:49. > :03:50.of Murray's pace to direct that ball into the corner. Big point that was
:03:51. > :04:15.as well. He didn't see that one coming.
:04:16. > :04:17.Second serve to his two hander. That is a bread-and-butter shot that,
:04:18. > :05:19.from Murray. Again the low forehand, couldn't do
:05:20. > :05:21.anything with it. Put it in the middle of the court and Andy could
:05:22. > :06:27.drop shot that. Murray grinding out the points in
:06:28. > :06:29.the fading light in Naples. Now though, with a break point to move
:06:30. > :07:47.5-4 up in the second. Can't see the ball. At the end of
:07:48. > :08:27.this set, I'm sure whatever happens, they'll stop it.
:08:28. > :08:41.your opponent round the court. Pinpoint accuracy.
:08:42. > :08:48.It is almost like someone is in control of the light dimmer switch
:08:49. > :08:54.out there. It has deteriorated rapidly in the last ten minutes.
:08:55. > :09:07.It looks much better on the TV pictures than it is out there.
:09:08. > :10:43.Oh! Great upper body strength to pull that one across court.
:10:44. > :10:58.He was just getting into that rally. Relatively comfortable shot. No real
:10:59. > :11:00.pressure on that one. You don't see that very often on
:11:01. > :12:16.such a big point. The umpire now in conversation with
:12:17. > :12:23.Andy Murray, doubts over the light. Maybe it would have been a different
:12:24. > :12:36.story had Murray won that game unbroken, what is captain Leon Smith
:12:37. > :12:41.saying? The Thai referee coming on as well, as we watch the last few
:12:42. > :12:44.moments of the game. It could have an impact on the tie, Murray, the
:12:45. > :12:49.way this team is set up, if he wants to play doubles he does play
:12:50. > :12:54.doubles. Right Yes. He is in charge of that. So say he plays doubles
:12:55. > :12:58.tomorrow, this is the difference between him playing one more set,
:12:59. > :13:02.and potentially playing another three.
:13:03. > :13:06.And then have to play doubles and then, there is a knock-on effect to
:13:07. > :13:10.whoever might come in to take his place in the double, because Tay are
:13:11. > :13:14.going to go to bed tonight not sure whether they are going to play
:13:15. > :13:16.tomorrow. A hard situation to be in Absolutely. It is difficult to
:13:17. > :13:22.prepare yourself when you don't know what is going to happen. And who you
:13:23. > :13:26.are going to be playing with. Put yourself in someone like Connor
:13:27. > :13:30.Fleming's situation, are you going to be playing with your partner or
:13:31. > :13:36.Andy, how do you warm up? You don't know. I mean I know they would love
:13:37. > :13:40.to finish the set. But it could have an impact, if he doesn't see the
:13:41. > :13:46.ball well, he is like "I don't want to risk it." Maybe they are telling
:13:47. > :13:50.him finish this set. Or maybe finish the game to make it even. It is
:13:51. > :14:16.unusual to finish on an odd game. Either way there will be some
:14:17. > :14:45.singles action tomorrow, over the doubles. That is a big mistake here.
:14:46. > :15:59.Oh he's miss it. Worked so hard during the point. That was a very
:16:00. > :16:06.late decision to hit the drop shot. He would have had to have that low
:16:07. > :16:13.forehand, he is thinks I thinking I can can't do that much, so he left
:16:14. > :16:15.it late to hit a drop shot. I doubt he would have got to that one any
:16:16. > :16:54.way. Maybe another late change of minds.
:16:55. > :16:58.Possibly. He has to be so careful here, 30 all.
:16:59. > :17:06.Needless to say massive point right now.
:17:07. > :17:11.It is one of those big serves he wants right now.
:17:12. > :17:21.On demand. Crowd aren't so sure but the umpire and the line judge were.
:17:22. > :17:26.It's out. Game point Murray, to level at five
:17:27. > :17:27.all. And surely that will be that for the
:17:28. > :17:40.night. In the fading light they will not be
:17:41. > :17:54.able to finish this set from five all.
:17:55. > :18:32.Late getting to that ball there. He will pick this one up.
:18:33. > :19:15.That didn't look good. Complaining he can't see the ball.
:19:16. > :19:21.Could be the last point of the day's play. What a vital one. Set point
:19:22. > :19:25.Seppi. Good serve.
:19:26. > :19:35.That is the serve he normally goes to.
:19:36. > :19:41.Eight points down, that is his... Favourite serve by miles. Can go
:19:42. > :19:48.down the middle but that the one he normally goes for.
:19:49. > :20:24.Best noise of day in Naples. Right at the end of the day.
:20:25. > :20:29.Despite being seasoned pros, they are very tired now. They know how
:20:30. > :20:34.much rests on this point. That is the difference between a
:20:35. > :20:38.good night's sleep and a bad night's sleep It is not just for yourself,
:20:39. > :20:55.it is is for the rest of your team. There is a lot riding on this.
:20:56. > :21:02.Oh that was a tight looking forehand. Really pulled off that
:21:03. > :21:07.one, middle of the net, that is a sign of nerves.
:21:08. > :21:19.If you miss it, it happens but he was in good position here.
:21:20. > :21:21.That is a tight looking forehand. No body tone, it was all arm. Yes.
:21:22. > :22:29.Praying it was going to go in. These points, getting tight just
:22:30. > :22:33.watching it. If you have kids watching at home and you played
:22:34. > :22:37.rallies and played cross court, that is the reason you do these drill, so
:22:38. > :22:44.you don't break down when it comes to pressure situation, and
:22:45. > :22:50.eventually someone has to, but, my goodness. Clay court Davis Cup
:22:51. > :22:55.match. Rallies can go on forever and there is tightness every shot you
:22:56. > :23:00.see them hitting on the crucial points.
:23:01. > :23:04.The ball shining out like a beacon as well. Getting dark.
:23:05. > :23:24.Set point again for Italy. What a volley. Ooh. Judy looking on
:23:25. > :23:29.there, was she? He had to see that one pretty well. You can see he
:23:30. > :23:35.can't see, this came at him fast. That was perfect technique. That was
:23:36. > :23:39.a difficult volley. He gets down well, out in front. Eyes close to
:23:40. > :24:06.the ball. Ooh Seppi has broken off from the
:24:07. > :24:10.point. He has to be sure here. He has to be sure that is wide and a
:24:11. > :24:16.double fault. It is close. It's wide. It's a double fault.
:24:17. > :24:20.Oh my goodness. What drama, late in the day in Naples.
:24:21. > :24:26.Murray too his credit accepts the call and doesn't take it any
:24:27. > :24:30.further. That has got... Misjudged it,
:24:31. > :24:35.especially when he said he can't see. Thought he has misjudged it
:24:36. > :24:43.there. That is gutsy. He is getting nervous too. Look at
:24:44. > :24:50.him. He wants out. Double fault bringst up another set point. --
:24:51. > :24:55.brings up another set point. Well done Murray.
:24:56. > :24:59.With all the nerve, what about that? Saving all the set points. Seppi was
:25:00. > :25:05.waiting for a backhand there and he was surprised by the forehand.
:25:06. > :25:08.I don't think he has missed a service. That is three or four he
:25:09. > :25:58.has thundered in. Oh, he has dug out that point,
:25:59. > :26:02.Murray. Now he has a game point.
:26:03. > :26:05.And it had to happen, that almost certainly the final game of the day
:26:06. > :26:17.turns out to be one of the longest games of the day. And the best game
:26:18. > :26:20.of the day. Absolutely right. What might have been, what might
:26:21. > :26:30.have been. And might still be.
:26:31. > :27:18.It is in Murray's hands now. Oh yes. Andy Murray stylishly moving
:27:19. > :27:26.to five all in the second set. And that will be it for the day. Racquet
:27:27. > :27:41.into the bag. Handshake from captain Leon Smith.
:27:42. > :27:47.One hour 53 of action in this match. It is funny, he has only held there
:27:48. > :27:52.for five all in the second set, but it feels so much more important.
:27:53. > :27:55.Almost like a set point for Murray that, saving the set point of his
:27:56. > :28:00.own, he will come back tomorrow, a set to the good and five all in the
:28:01. > :28:04.second. Well on that sporting weekend that
:28:05. > :28:08.promises so much, what a fantastic drama in the gathering gloom, in
:28:09. > :28:12.Naples, and we obviously haven't finished the first two rubbers in
:28:13. > :28:15.this particular quarter-final of the dbg, but elsewhere in the world the
:28:16. > :28:17.other three quarter-finals that have been taking place stand like this at
:28:18. > :28:32.the close of play. Roger Federer has just won in
:28:33. > :28:36.straight sets after Stanislas Wawrinka lost earlier on, so the
:28:37. > :28:39.match between Switzerland and Kazakhstan is one apiece, the winner
:28:40. > :28:42.of that will play the win other -- match in Naples, as you can see from
:28:43. > :28:46.what has happened today, there is a long way to go. Whoever said that
:28:47. > :28:49.sport was good for your health didn't know what they were taking
:28:50. > :28:52.about. See you tomorrow.
