:00:19. > :00:23.you are switching over from BBC Two after what has been an agonising

:00:24. > :00:27.hour or two on the final day of this quarterfinal tie between Italy and

:00:28. > :00:31.Great Britain. Great Britain are leading 2-1 going into today's match

:00:32. > :00:38.and we were hoping we wouldn't need a fifth singles because Andy Murray,

:00:39. > :00:45.if he were to beat Fognini, he would ensure Britain went through to their

:00:46. > :00:49.first semifinal in 33 years. But Andy Murray is a set and a break

:00:50. > :00:54.down now. One of the best clay-court players in the world, Fognini, is

:00:55. > :00:58.very much in the ascendancy. If Murray was going to come back from

:00:59. > :01:03.this position, this would be one of the best wins of his entire career.

:01:04. > :01:08.It is a great setting for a bit of sporting history. And, boy, what a

:01:09. > :01:12.lot of sporting drama these two are providing.

:01:13. > :01:24.I couldn't agree more. You have to look at this from the neutral point

:01:25. > :01:29.of view, it is a fabulous match. Every rubber has been close. There

:01:30. > :01:44.is a lot of tennis still to be played.

:01:45. > :01:58.If you are just joining this match, Murray lost the last five games the

:01:59. > :02:08.first set and Fognini took it 6-3. Second set, Murray was down to hold

:02:09. > :02:15.serve, and it was a long six-game and it was crucial for the Italian.

:02:16. > :02:18.Fognini struck with the single break in this set so far in the seventh

:02:19. > :02:39.game. Those shots are so high, he has to

:02:40. > :02:44.take it early, Fognini is already two steps inside the baseline. And

:02:45. > :03:03.then you are in no man's land. Second serve ace to win the game for

:03:04. > :03:15.Fognini. This has had everything so far. We saw Andy do this a few days

:03:16. > :03:19.ago. There is no pace required. If you can just get the right

:03:20. > :03:41.trajectory and the right angle, you don't have to do anything with it.

:03:42. > :03:49.How well does he do that when he gets to the drop shots. He pushes it

:03:50. > :04:36.a foot from the baseline. Here it comes. Just shuffles it down deep.

:04:37. > :05:04.We have got a football crowd in the tennis stadium!

:05:05. > :05:13.They know all about football crowds here with Napoli doing well lately,

:05:14. > :05:20.and Rafa Benitez playing their old rivals Juventus at the weekend.

:05:21. > :05:34.There's a bit of hostility between those two club sides.

:05:35. > :05:42.Fognini is firmly in charge at the moment. And two more break points on

:05:43. > :06:13.the Murray serve means that it is set point for Italy in this rubber.

:06:14. > :06:21.This second serve might sum it up a bit. He's getting tired. Fognini is

:06:22. > :06:27.expanding far less energy on each of his shots because he is using his

:06:28. > :06:28.hands, his wrists, his arm on most of his strokes. And now it is a

:06:29. > :06:41.little bit worrying. Just put this match into context,

:06:42. > :06:45.this is how, the final morning, or the final afternoon, the World Cup

:06:46. > :06:50.quarterfinals look. The Czech Republic have beaten Japan 5-0. And

:06:51. > :06:58.they are playing the winners of France against Germany, Germany 2-0

:06:59. > :07:03.up, France better yesterday, and Benneteau and Wilfred Tsonga are

:07:04. > :07:13.trying to get their win. Switzerland are 2-0 down against has extolled.

:07:14. > :07:19.If you've joined us, this is the first of three, because it is the

:07:20. > :07:24.best of five, if Andy Murray were to come back and win, Great Britain

:07:25. > :07:30.would go into the last fortnight. The way things are looking, if

:07:31. > :07:35.Fognini does win, all the mat should and all the aspirations will come

:07:36. > :07:40.down to a match between Andreas Seppi and James Ward, who played so

:07:41. > :07:44.well in the USA against Sam Querrey to give Britain their win. So, the

:07:45. > :07:52.pressure is on this man. You'd rather be in his position that Andy

:07:53. > :07:56.Murray's. It occurred to me the last time that Italy played Scotland in a

:07:57. > :08:00.major sporting event, internationally, it was in the Six

:08:01. > :08:05.Nations championship, and Italy had far and away the best of the match,

:08:06. > :08:10.and Scotland won with a last second drop goal from Duncan Weir. I'd like

:08:11. > :08:17.to implant that thought into Andy Murray's head at this moment.

:08:18. > :08:26.Murray has to come from two sets down in this man's backyard to win

:08:27. > :08:30.this particular match. Get in touch with your thoughts wherever you are

:08:31. > :08:37.around the country, gripped by this, I'm sure. Go to our website for

:08:38. > :08:46.extra analysis and comment, get in touch.

:08:47. > :08:52.We'd love to hear from you. If you're having to pop out and about,

:08:53. > :08:58.there's live commentary right now on radio Five Live. And get the BBC

:08:59. > :11:31.sport app if you haven't already. And I'm afraid that is what Britain

:11:32. > :11:38.are dealing with right here! Inspired tennis from Italy's leader,

:11:39. > :11:45.Fabio Fognini. That is the first to smile I have seen from the captain.

:11:46. > :11:50.He very rarely smiles, period, very nice fellow, but he never smiles!

:11:51. > :11:56.That is one of the best shots I have ever seen taken from that position

:11:57. > :12:03.on the court. It's so difficult because you're facing the wrong way.

:12:04. > :12:11.You just have to use your arm, and the timing you'd need to get that

:12:12. > :12:15.kind of power... What a talent. Well, Andy Murray has an excellent

:12:16. > :12:26.five set record over the course of his career, and he is no stranger to

:12:27. > :12:40.2-1 victories. But this is a completely different proposition. 15

:12:41. > :12:43.set comeback win -- one five set comeback win in the Davis Cup. And

:12:44. > :12:48.the way this man is playing, Fognini, it is difficult to

:12:49. > :12:53.visualise right now. This is where Andy, though, this is where he has

:12:54. > :12:58.got to compose himself. It is almost like Houllier 's comedy show

:12:59. > :13:06.Fognini, when looks at him, you've got to beat me. Thus -- it is almost

:13:07. > :13:23.like he has to show Fognini. I wonder, he came out with a plan in

:13:24. > :13:28.the first set. In the second set, he thought, I'd give it another shot,

:13:29. > :13:34.maybe I can change it up slightly. So, in the third set, does he try

:13:35. > :13:39.something completely new? At the moment, the match is in Fognini's

:13:40. > :13:45.hands, the way he is taking charge of these rallies. Well, that is a

:13:46. > :13:52.change-up, first-time we have seen that.

:13:53. > :14:30.Sneak attack, serve and folly. -- volley.

:14:31. > :14:38.First one he has missed? He is capable of going through the spells

:14:39. > :14:43.of dodgy looking points. Murray has got to keep his level hive. Just

:14:44. > :15:37.keep forcing him and hope that his level will drop a bit.

:15:38. > :15:49.Just amazing how well he has hit that shot. He pushes Murray backs so

:15:50. > :15:50.deep there and then, boom. Abbreviate the swing and drops it

:15:51. > :16:24.glow. He has a career high-ranking at the

:16:25. > :16:33.moment of 13. He saved match points in Indian Wells Open your other week

:16:34. > :16:48.against Monfils. Then the final in Buena sire is. -- Buenos Iris. He

:16:49. > :17:00.has reached the final of five of his last six tournaments on clay court.

:17:01. > :17:12.On form, there are few finer than Fognini. On this surface. Murray is

:17:13. > :17:14.going to have to hit shots like that for the rest of the day to keep this

:17:15. > :17:30.alive. That was the right shot to go for,

:17:31. > :17:46.he pulled it wide. He's got to step in on those and get it.

:17:47. > :17:52.Murray having success down-the-line now. It is one of his favourite

:17:53. > :17:57.shots with the backhand. Some say he doesn't use it enough. It is a

:17:58. > :18:02.difficult shot and a great shot when it works. He leans into it so well,

:18:03. > :19:16.extends the racket head. The crowd not enjoying the

:19:17. > :19:17.celebrations of Murray, and the British spectators after that point.

:19:18. > :19:27.Oh, well. There is the response from the

:19:28. > :20:33.locals! Jonathan, you have had a lot of

:20:34. > :20:37.matches in your time, is this one of the best atmospheres you've ever

:20:38. > :20:46.seen? It is not the biggest stadium. But the noise they are making. It's

:20:47. > :20:51.great. There will be purists around saying, it is too noisy, but I am

:20:52. > :20:55.not in that camp at all. I like the way Murray is trying to hit through

:20:56. > :21:00.it. That is one way to try to silence them. It's not like the

:21:01. > :21:06.locals are behaving poorly. OK, there are a couple of jeers, but you

:21:07. > :21:15.expect that. I had poor instructor at me! This is nothing! That was in

:21:16. > :21:19.Rome, wasn't it? Yes, and in Barcelona, the crowd had a punch-up

:21:20. > :21:28.after the match. Iran's away very quickly. How is their economy right

:21:29. > :21:35.now? It is iffy, they've got to save those coins. It is hard work with

:21:36. > :21:39.the sun beating down on this part of Italy. There are some great clouds

:21:40. > :21:48.above, but it is the nicest weather of the tie so far. Dominic giving us

:21:49. > :21:53.great insight into the extra physical demands of playing on clay,

:21:54. > :21:55.particularly right at the start of the clay-court season. It is a

:21:56. > :22:01.transition for all of these pairs from the hard court to the clay, the

:22:02. > :22:30.different physical challenges that brings.

:22:31. > :22:36.Murray just needs to have something to cling to. He has got to build,

:22:37. > :22:50.point by point. But he cannot do that kind of thing.

:22:51. > :23:07.He cannot give away cheap points. On Court yesterday, mid-morning, to

:23:08. > :23:10.finish off his singles against Andreas Seppi. Still on court as the

:23:11. > :23:26.sun was sweeping down. Then he finished off the doubles

:23:27. > :23:30.with his partner Colin Fleming. That's one of the toughest things,

:23:31. > :23:35.the accumulation of fact. It's not just how many hours he was caught in

:23:36. > :23:38.the singles and doubles, it was the psychological, mental tiredness of

:23:39. > :23:43.getting up for one match, getting ready for the singles and then only

:23:44. > :23:44.having an hour and a half, then preparing for another doubles which

:23:45. > :23:59.was very emotional. The backhand down-the-line winning

:24:00. > :24:43.key points. In the last service game, he lost

:24:44. > :24:48.the returns. He had some chances, he was close. As it gets closer to the

:24:49. > :25:02.finish line, that is when Fognini can start getting a little tired.

:25:03. > :25:10.That was close, very close on the line, but I think it is just out.

:25:11. > :25:13.Despite how relaxed Fognini looks, you've got to remember that he's

:25:14. > :25:20.playing for his country to get to semifinals. This is their chance to

:25:21. > :25:26.be the world number six or seven? He is down at number eight. Doesn't

:25:27. > :25:45.matter where you are, there is going to be nervous. -- nerves.

:25:46. > :25:52.He is starting to blame someone else for his poor second serve. That is a

:25:53. > :26:08.good sign from the British point of view.

:26:09. > :26:13.That is a big return to miss at 0-15 and he knows it. That was a big

:26:14. > :26:57.point. That is the shot he does so well. I

:26:58. > :27:09.thought Andy played a good point, a good folly. Great volley, but... He

:27:10. > :27:15.is a natural clay-court mover. He makes shots look so easy. He is not

:27:16. > :27:21.tall, is not tall comedy 's got a low centre of gravity, he changes to

:27:22. > :27:23.rich and very quickly. -- he is not a tall guy, he has got a low centre

:27:24. > :28:13.of gravity. Fognini is perceived as hothead, but

:28:14. > :28:20.he has been playing great. He has. Pity for Murray. It was a big point.

:28:21. > :28:28.Double fault and then a second serve to Murray's backhand, and all of a

:28:29. > :28:34.sudden he could be up zero -30, but if you let off the hook, he can be

:28:35. > :28:38.inspirational. He can reel off to three points. If you get a chance,

:28:39. > :28:43.you've got to take it, and that is the one thing Murray has done

:28:44. > :28:49.today, his first serve hasn't been as good as we would like either.

:28:50. > :28:55.You've got to hand it to the Italian. He has played some tennis

:28:56. > :28:56.today that is stunning. As good as anybody in the world on clay-court

:28:57. > :29:16.when he plays like this. Different service motions. Murray

:29:17. > :29:21.extends and snaps the ball better than Fognini. It is a good serve,

:29:22. > :29:25.not too many aces, but pretty consistent normally. But Andy Murray

:29:26. > :29:29.has not hit as many big serves and we would like, as many first

:29:30. > :29:32.serves. His first service percentage is lower than we would have liked. A

:29:33. > :30:04.lot lower. He got away with a mishit there.

:30:05. > :30:10.Fognini's record in Davis Cup, he has only lost once on clay in 1

:30:11. > :30:18.Davis Cup matches. You can certainly see why. That was

:30:19. > :30:22.on his debut, you have to go back to 2008, against Gulbis who is a player

:30:23. > :30:55.not short on talent himself. Won 11 in a row.

:30:56. > :31:04.Good for Murray at the end of that point, where he let out a shout of

:31:05. > :31:08."Yes." It is important not only to keep that message to himself but to

:31:09. > :31:13.show his opponent he believes he can win this match. He is a two Grand

:31:14. > :31:25.Slam winner, that carries a lot mentally.

:31:26. > :31:31.Two sidelines and one baseline hit in three shots. There is no beating

:31:32. > :31:36.that. Look at this. That is the second

:31:37. > :31:39.one. It hits the baseline. This one hits the sideline. Thank you very

:31:40. > :31:51.much. How do you teach accuracy like that,

:31:52. > :31:58.is it relentless practise. It is. You have to have the talent to do it

:31:59. > :32:18.and faith. It is drills, over and over again.

:32:19. > :32:31.That is a bad miss. He knows that. The chance of a break.

:32:32. > :32:41.Start to see the finishing line here, just a little bit.

:32:42. > :32:55.Two sets to love, middle of the third. Good hold from Murray. Very

:32:56. > :34:04.good hold. Again, that was own those errors,

:34:05. > :34:08.that is a cheap error, playing against this sort of talent, don't

:34:09. > :34:30.give anything away, make him earn it.

:34:31. > :34:36.Very lucky there from the Italian. That backhand down-the-line he hit

:34:37. > :34:43.was going out and it hit the top of net and bent straight back in to

:34:44. > :34:48.court. Got away with that one. Ended up playing a beautiful point

:34:49. > :36:34.to close out the point, but very fortunate.

:36:35. > :36:49.That was good when he hit it. You would see from his, it is just wide

:36:50. > :36:55.and Fognini holds for 4-3. He edges closer, leading 2-0, two

:36:56. > :36:59.games away po ten tally. What an effort it has been from the number

:37:00. > :37:05.one player of Italy. Murray needs all the help he the he can get, the

:37:06. > :37:11.staff and team mays will be cheering him on. Let us go to court side. The

:37:12. > :37:15.team bench doing their bit, despite the fact their man is up against it.

:37:16. > :37:18.They are encouraging as regularly as they can, applauding and cheering,

:37:19. > :37:24.Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins are down there, Dan Evans down there

:37:25. > :37:28.too, not selected ultimately for this tie, he has remain here,

:37:29. > :37:32.supporting the players, James Ward not there, and will come as no

:37:33. > :37:35.surprise, because there is only 20 minutes between matches and he may

:37:36. > :37:42.need to come up very soon and go one better than he did in San Diego,

:37:43. > :37:46.that was some win over Sam Querry. If he needs to beat Seppi to take

:37:47. > :37:50.Great Britain into the semifinals. That will be some margin, the

:37:51. > :37:54.greatest achievement of his career. Thank you. At least he has that

:37:55. > :38:00.experience which could prove so crucial. Statistics. Tennis players

:38:01. > :38:03.will tell you they don't read much into them, when they love them. Here

:38:04. > :38:08.is an interesting one for you, Fognini over the course of the

:38:09. > :38:14.match, has a better winning percentage of points played on his

:38:15. > :38:20.second serve, than on his first. 68 percent first serve points won, 73

:38:21. > :38:25.percent second serve points won. That is remarkable, because Murray's

:38:26. > :38:29.attacked it quite often. That shows how quick he is and how well he has

:38:30. > :38:32.backed up that serve from the baseline, because it is very

:38:33. > :38:38.hittable his second serve, but if you move like he does, he is greased

:38:39. > :38:42.lightning, I suppose he can counter act whatever comes at him. Now we

:38:43. > :38:46.are at the business end of this set, now, now it becomes extremely

:38:47. > :38:48.interesting right here, this is obviously a must win game for

:38:49. > :39:38.Murray. -- must-win. Two very easy comfortable points for

:39:39. > :39:47.Murray. He has been in both of these rally, no problem, then two errors.

:39:48. > :39:54.The sooner he can get out of this game, the better, to put pressure on

:39:55. > :40:16.Fognini as soon as possible. It is a sloppy game.

:40:17. > :40:23.That is what the doctor ordered from Murray. Not to expend any energy

:40:24. > :40:31.holding that servement you expect that is going to be a tough game for

:40:32. > :40:39.him, won it easily, now, as Dom said he can pull all his energy.

:40:40. > :40:43.Suddenly, your opponent, you have to serve again. It feels like you are

:40:44. > :40:46.always serving, and there is more pressure. Someone has held easy,

:40:47. > :42:33.that can subconsciously impact you. The sequence here of comfortable

:42:34. > :42:40.service games. Goodness. I have seen it all. I have

:42:41. > :42:45.seen it all. How on earth? Not only did he get that but win the point

:42:46. > :42:52.from that position. Seriously, this is impossible.

:42:53. > :42:55.That is remarkable. That is so demoralising as well. When you hit a

:42:56. > :43:00.great shot and a person pulls that out and you are thinking what do I

:43:01. > :43:07.have to do to win a point? What do I have to do? ! He covered the right

:43:08. > :43:25.way, he did everything right, just inspirational tennis. This crowd!

:43:26. > :43:34.It's all happening, really. Britain needs something to cling to,

:43:35. > :43:39.John, at the moment the momentum well and truly with Italy. Two sets

:43:40. > :43:47.up, 5-4. Murray is about to serve to stay in this match. What must James

:43:48. > :43:52.Ward be feeling behind the scenes? 161 in the world and now he has to

:43:53. > :43:57.come and play Andreas Seppi, and he will hope to, it is the deciding

:43:58. > :44:12.match. Deciding -- rubber of the tie. He is an experienced Davis Cup

:44:13. > :44:17.player. Listen to the crowd here. Great stuff. But he won't be

:44:18. > :44:20.expecting this score line, psychologically he would have

:44:21. > :44:26.thought this would be a close match at worsts, and to see his number

:44:27. > :44:31.one, you know, sort of getting beaten easily, that is not easy

:44:32. > :44:35.psychologically. It is not over yet. No. No breaks of serve, no break

:44:36. > :46:01.points in this third set so far. But Murray serving to stay in it.

:46:02. > :46:08.What a setting here. Look at that. If Fognini can win to more points

:46:09. > :46:20.the noise is going to reverberate all the way up to coast, to Rome.

:46:21. > :46:33.Now he only needs one more point. Three match points to Fognini.

:46:34. > :46:38.He caught Andy by surprise. It goes to show you never, you know, give up

:46:39. > :47:37.on any cause. If he can win this from 0-40, that

:47:38. > :47:42.would be a great opportunity to break the next game. It is his

:47:43. > :48:24.favourite serve here, crunch it. Fabio Fognini, plays one of the

:48:25. > :48:44.matches of his life, to keep the tie alive. Going all the way in Naples.

:48:45. > :48:48.What a performance. One of the best clay court which -- clay court

:48:49. > :49:00.players in the world. There can't be any doubt about form. Too strong for

:49:01. > :49:04.Murray on the day. Look at these scenes. People truly

:49:05. > :49:10.believe and thousand nay have to be favourites.

:49:11. > :49:29.They believe, the crowd believes. Unbelievable. The British did not

:49:30. > :49:35.believe as much. This record he has of wins on clay for his country

:49:36. > :49:40.continues. Still hasn't lost since his debut, Murray ice first singles

:49:41. > :49:44.defeat in Davis Cup since his debut. Good effort from him over the

:49:45. > :49:51.weekend, don't forget about the stomach bug he had on the day before

:49:52. > :49:58.the tie. He has put himself out there. Fognini will be enjoying this

:49:59. > :50:03.experience. He has been Italy's hero, all round the world, certainly

:50:04. > :50:12.in Argentina, the last round, and now potentially here, on home clay.

:50:13. > :50:17.One suspects he will be enjoying this adulation right now. Oh yes he

:50:18. > :50:21.is. You don't have to zip your tracksuit up but it would help. So

:50:22. > :50:27.James Ward, now then, what are you made of? Have you got another big

:50:28. > :50:36.Davis Cup performance for your country left in you? Well, Andreas

:50:37. > :50:41.Seppi is the opponent. That is next. Of all the possible scenarios of

:50:42. > :50:46.that fourth rubber, Murray losing in straight sets was not one many of us

:50:47. > :50:49.countenance, that is why fogging if is one of the best clay court

:50:50. > :50:53.players in the world. His speed round the court was absolutely

:50:54. > :50:57.stunning, and maybe there wasn't enough left in the Murray tank for

:50:58. > :51:00.him to win that match. -- Fabio Fognini. The match statistics are

:51:01. > :51:05.there for you, to see, but the bottom line as Jonathan Overend said

:51:06. > :51:09.in the commentary, is come the hour, come James Ward, if ever there was

:51:10. > :51:15.an opportunity, for you to write your name, in the annals of British

:51:16. > :51:20.tennis history. There he is now, knocking up earlier on today with

:51:21. > :51:23.Andy Murray. He will know that irrespective of what happened

:51:24. > :51:28.against Sam Querry in San Diego a few weeks ago, this is a bigger

:51:29. > :51:32.task, but the prize is so much greater, the incentive is so much

:51:33. > :51:36.greater. The pressure is that much greater, but the opportunity is that

:51:37. > :51:41.much greater too, for the Londoner. So if you need clarification of

:51:42. > :51:46.where we sit on the match, then this is it. Set against that fantastic

:51:47. > :51:50.backdrop. Obviously Fognini got things off to a good start for the

:51:51. > :51:55.Italians by beating James Ward. Murray beat Seppi. That pep -- epic

:51:56. > :51:59.doubles that Murray and fleping won and Fognini winning in straight sets

:52:00. > :52:04.for the loss of just ten games against Andy Murray, and so now,

:52:05. > :52:06.opportunity knocks for James Ward. -- Fleming.

:52:07. > :52:10.I suppose if you are watching this morning and you are a neutral, if

:52:11. > :52:14.ever there was a justification for the Davis Cup as a competition, then

:52:15. > :52:20.this is it in terms of atmosphere, in terms of drama, in terms of

:52:21. > :52:24.sporting ebb and flow. This is just fantastic.

:52:25. > :52:29.It is. That is what the competition is so great. That is why we have to

:52:30. > :52:33.protect it and make it so the top players play regularly, when you get

:52:34. > :52:38.a match like this the whole world should see it. Not just Italy and

:52:39. > :52:41.Britain. It is brilliant drama. I think we can go live to Fabio

:52:42. > :52:52.Fognini, he is good value on the court, and he tends to be good value

:52:53. > :52:58.off it as well. I have Italy's new national hero

:52:59. > :53:03.with me, Fabio Fognini, you must be Italy's latest hero after that. No,

:53:04. > :53:08.no, no. I just play better than Andy, that is the tennis. We know

:53:09. > :53:13.that this sport is really difficult, especially Andy, because he plays to

:53:14. > :53:18.win. The last match yesterday and today was a bit tighter with the

:53:19. > :53:23.serve, I tell you yesterday, it was, I focus on my game to try to do my

:53:24. > :53:29.best, and it is going in the perfect way. Today, I think, was important

:53:30. > :53:38.for me, especially for me, because I beat a player like, you know, he won

:53:39. > :53:43.everything, and of course because 2-1, it was a difficult match,

:53:44. > :53:49.really tough, and then, you know, I was doing my best, and I played. You

:53:50. > :53:53.played magnificently, there were one or two British fans that made life

:53:54. > :53:57.difficult for you early on, but the Italian fans were absolutely

:53:58. > :54:03.incredible, weren't they? That is the crowd. Especially in Naples, it

:54:04. > :54:10.is always difficult, the support is today, it is unbelievable. It is a

:54:11. > :54:17.sun -- sunny day, it is Sunday, we play two great players like me and

:54:18. > :54:23.Andy, and you know, now I have no voices, I am really happy for this

:54:24. > :54:32.point, time to recover well, do the press and now to do it... One more

:54:33. > :54:36.win for Italy required now. Andreas Seppi, against James Ward, is that

:54:37. > :54:40.match that you are very confident I Italy can win? Of course, we are

:54:41. > :54:44.confident about it. I just say yesterday, it is everything can

:54:45. > :54:48.happen in the Davis Cup, I beat Andy today, of course I, he was

:54:49. > :54:56.favouriten the course, but you know, I tell you, just to think about our

:54:57. > :55:01.game, I think. James, you know, he is a really good player, he played

:55:02. > :55:07.good with me yesterday, but of course, if I had to say something

:55:08. > :55:13.now, we are 51-49. It is an important point. Anything can

:55:14. > :55:19.happen, but of course, Andy is going to be supporting for the team and

:55:20. > :55:26.the crowd. Well play and go and enjoy the moment and enjoy -- and

:55:27. > :55:29.join the rest of your team as we wait for Andreas Seppi and James

:55:30. > :55:35.Ward to take court. They should be with us in about 20 minutes time.

:55:36. > :55:40.That is fabulous Fabio, he says it is 51-49. You said it was 70-0

:55:41. > :55:46.before the match. Would you revise that now? No. I would take 51-49

:55:47. > :55:50.every time. I think it was talking to Dom about it, think in the locker

:55:51. > :55:54.room, before, when Ward was getting ready at a set-and-a-half. You have

:55:55. > :55:57.to prepare for a fifth match obviously, but deep down, believe

:55:58. > :56:02.me, Ward is thinking that Murray is going to win this match before he

:56:03. > :56:06.goes out there and then he is getting beaten easily. It has to

:56:07. > :56:13.have a slight demoralising effect and it is wow I have to get ready.

:56:14. > :56:17.That makes it tougher. To pursue that further, if James Ward woke up

:56:18. > :56:21.thinking I probably won't have to play today, that affects your whole

:56:22. > :56:26.body language, you mood, demeanour and suddenly it is like a computer

:56:27. > :56:30.gear shift, you think, oh, I am going to be on now, not I am going

:56:31. > :56:35.to be on, I am going to be on with the destination of the tie the my

:56:36. > :56:39.hands. Yes it is nerve-wracking, and, I think as John said, the team

:56:40. > :56:45.that the morale is going to be low, because that was, that was a quick

:56:46. > :56:49.match and it was convincing, for Italy, so that is going to creep

:56:50. > :56:52.into the locker room. They will try and keep him up beat, but it is

:56:53. > :56:57.going to be tough. He will have to come out firing. James has the

:56:58. > :57:02.ability, he has, he can produce an upset and he he can win. Will he?

:57:03. > :57:06.That is another question. He has to go out and start fast, and really

:57:07. > :57:11.take it to him. Talk about starting faths. Andy Murray got off to a

:57:12. > :57:16.flier. He was 3-1. One or two in the back room team were saying it is all

:57:17. > :57:21.over now. Slightly prematurely and it went, he fell off a cliff after

:57:22. > :57:26.that We thought early on the first set was critical, and unfortunately,

:57:27. > :57:30.Murray did start well, but you know, Fabio, he kept hanging in there and

:57:31. > :57:34.all of a sudden, as we said that he can string these winners together

:57:35. > :57:38.and show how brilliant he is, that is what he did. We kept thinking or

:57:39. > :57:42.I did that Murray would come back, he would find way and we kept

:57:43. > :57:46.thinking there would be dip in the the Italian games. We thought,

:57:47. > :57:51.Fognini his form would fluctuate. But he was brilliant. I mentioned is

:57:52. > :57:55.on the final point, his strength of hitting, his power of hitting but

:57:56. > :58:00.the speed round the court is extraordinary. And it demoralises

:58:01. > :58:04.you as a player when everything that you do is coming back with interest.

:58:05. > :58:08.You don't know how the beat the guy. There was time whence we saw Andy

:58:09. > :58:14.shaking his head and looking like he didn't know how to answer this.

:58:15. > :58:19.The drop shot was a key weapon of Fognini in the match. He was placing

:58:20. > :58:23.it on the six pence. When you think about it Murray is one of the

:58:24. > :58:27.fastest players out there and I don't think how many -- I don't know

:58:28. > :58:31.how many winners he hit but he probably one nine or ten out of 12,

:58:32. > :58:36.something like that. They were from tough positions and Murray barely

:58:37. > :58:40.got to them. If he did he was in an impossible situation. When Murray

:58:41. > :58:45.did the drop shot and he has a great one. Fognini won almost every point.

:58:46. > :58:51.He is so fast he not only got to them he put them way. We have a

:58:52. > :58:55.point here, Murray was giving it his all. Despite that Fognini came up

:58:56. > :58:58.with something that was spell binding. How do you play a shot like

:58:59. > :59:10.this? This is one of the best shots I've

:59:11. > :59:14.ever seen. That was a great forehand. I've never seen a drop

:59:15. > :59:23.shot the way he got that one was just beyond belief. I think the

:59:24. > :59:26.point is worth making is that there was a time when Novak Djokovic who

:59:27. > :59:29.was a bit of a joker and somebody who might never make it to the top.

:59:30. > :59:35.A couple of years ago, Fognini was one of those players, in the 30s and

:59:36. > :59:41.40s who said, yes, he's always laughing. This is the shot. I'm

:59:42. > :59:46.sorry, that shot is almost impossible, and Murray did all the

:59:47. > :59:51.right things. Ticket winner from that position, it's impossible,

:59:52. > :59:58.basically! Anyway, Fognini, ranked 35, 40 couple of years ago, always

:59:59. > :00:01.laughing and joking, enthusiastic, he is smiling, he sometimes goes off

:00:02. > :00:05.his right and also order of things. Suddenly, are we seeing the

:00:06. > :00:10.emergence of somebody beyond that to somebody who could be a contender,

:00:11. > :00:14.when it comes to the French Open, certainly? At some point, you

:00:15. > :00:19.realise, you mature, you've got the ability you can beat very good

:00:20. > :00:23.players, not on a regular basis, but you can see that, and you think,

:00:24. > :00:27.maybe it is time to invest in myself, make the effort because I

:00:28. > :00:32.can go and really do damage on this tour. I can win a Grand Slam. He has

:00:33. > :00:38.that talent. If he can put the work in as well, it wouldn't be a

:00:39. > :00:44.surprise. It would be great for tennis. I love watching him, to be

:00:45. > :00:50.honest. He is a showman, you never know what he's going to do, half the

:00:51. > :00:54.time he doesn't. Nastase, he won two Grand Slams, but he should of won

:00:55. > :00:58.another five or six but he would lose his rag. He was so great to

:00:59. > :01:03.watch that you think, what entertainment! This play is the same

:01:04. > :01:06.thing and if he can get a little bit stronger mentally, he will win some

:01:07. > :01:13.big matches. We will all be entertained. If we wind the clock

:01:14. > :01:16.back 2.5 hours ago, when we were saying we expected Murray to win,

:01:17. > :01:22.Jonathan make the point repeatedly that Andy Murray's record isn't

:01:23. > :01:28.great on clay. What has Andy got to do to suddenly make the next step as

:01:29. > :01:34.far as being a clay-court player is concerned? It's going to be tough.

:01:35. > :01:39.The way he plays, he plays flat strokes. He doesn't have heavy

:01:40. > :01:43.shots. On clay, that is tough, which is why he's so good on the hard

:01:44. > :01:47.court and grass court. But we can't take too much out of this one

:01:48. > :01:51.because he hasn't done this training block required to get the strength

:01:52. > :01:57.in the legs that is needed. I don't know. That is a good question. He is

:01:58. > :02:02.going to have to play against Fognini, natural is on this surface.

:02:03. > :02:09.We were shell-shocked by the margin. We will all sane, it might be four

:02:10. > :02:15.sets, five, but we didn't think it would be straight sets. Nobody

:02:16. > :02:22.expected it to be straight sets to Fognini. Although we thought maybe

:02:23. > :02:28.Murray might have won in straight sets. Get in touch with us. A lot of

:02:29. > :02:32.people saying if Murray hadn't played the doubles yesterday,

:02:33. > :02:39.Hutchins and Fleming would have won anyway, and Fognini would have won

:02:40. > :02:44.today anyway. I would like to discuss that. To play to Davis Cup

:02:45. > :02:51.matches, you look at the hour he was on court for the singles, the mental

:02:52. > :02:54.strength of the night before and then winning that match purely

:02:55. > :02:59.focusing on that, and mentally having to get up later for a big

:03:00. > :03:07.doubles match, that is training. I think his serve was poor today. And

:03:08. > :03:11.a lot of that was down to tiredness. That is all going to have

:03:12. > :03:12.ramifications in later days. It's not going to be easy to stay

:03:13. > :03:20.strong, as you would normally. If you've just switched on and you

:03:21. > :03:26.missed Andy Murray's attempt to take Britain into the semifinals for the

:03:27. > :03:33.first time in 30 years, here is the point at which Murray lost. In the

:03:34. > :03:42.end, it was a tame finish to the game.

:03:43. > :04:02.Fognini cupping his ear, saying, let me hear you. And the crowd letting

:04:03. > :04:06.him bat-mac -- hear it. You could hear that every time anyone made a

:04:07. > :04:11.mistake, there was a lot of roaring, which you don't see all the

:04:12. > :04:16.time on the tour, because there was something special about this Davis

:04:17. > :04:21.Cup match. So, this is how it stands on a Sunday afternoon.

:04:22. > :04:28.The Czech Republic, the defending champions, are through to play

:04:29. > :04:35.France or Germany. France are trying to be the eighth country ever to

:04:36. > :04:40.come back from 2-0 down to win to progress. 2-1 down because they won

:04:41. > :04:54.the doubles and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has won the first set against Kamke

:04:55. > :04:57.of Germany. It is 2-2 with Italy, and Switzerland against Kazakhstan.

:04:58. > :05:03.At the most unlikely of all results, Kazakhstan, 2-1 up after

:05:04. > :05:08.their doubles victory over Wawrinka and Federer. Wawrinka is playing the

:05:09. > :05:15.first singles for the Swiss at the moment and he is 5-4 up against

:05:16. > :05:20.Kukushkin of Kazakhstan. I am sure there is a great atmosphere on that

:05:21. > :05:25.court in Geneva. So, loads of tennis for you, who knows how much? There

:05:26. > :05:31.is so much more sport to tell you about on the BBC over the course of

:05:32. > :05:34.the next few days. The Challenge Cup fourth-round between Huddersfield

:05:35. > :05:43.and Saint Helens is on today at 1:45pm. You must have been living in

:05:44. > :05:52.a cave if you didn't know the boat race is on today. We have the

:05:53. > :05:56.Olympic journey with David Weir at 6:30pm. Then highlights of the

:05:57. > :06:02.Bahrain Grand Prix from 10pm. Still, it keeps on coming, our sporting cup

:06:03. > :06:07.overflows with highlights of the Premier League tonight at 10:25pm.

:06:08. > :06:12.All the goals from yesterday as well. And then our triathlon review

:06:13. > :06:18.starts tomorrow. That is at 3pm. I am sure you will know that the

:06:19. > :06:22.Masters starts on Thursday but our review of the Masters starts on

:06:23. > :06:31.Tuesday at 1:50pm. So, Andy Murray, and we know his

:06:32. > :06:35.background, but there is a perception that tennis is for a

:06:36. > :06:40.certain group of people for a certain part of society but the LTA

:06:41. > :06:44.is trying to make sure tennis goes out to the widest communities. Phil

:06:45. > :06:48.Jones has been to Birmingham to see one particular initiative.

:06:49. > :06:54.With a Wimbledon champion to call its own, British tennis has got a

:06:55. > :06:59.colossal monkey off his back. The next mission is to change the

:07:00. > :07:02.perception of tennis as white and middle-class and get people from all

:07:03. > :07:07.walks of life channelling their inner Andy Murray. It is a cold and

:07:08. > :07:16.damp day in inner-city Birmingham. We are in the heart of the seat

:07:17. > :07:25.immunity. -- of the seat -- Sikh community. This man is one of the

:07:26. > :07:32.pioneering tennis activators making this plan work. I was brought up

:07:33. > :07:37.around here and I got involved and with the help of the school and the

:07:38. > :07:41.tennis foundation and the LTA, they are helping fund projects like

:07:42. > :07:45.this. It is brilliant what he's doing at this school. The key thing

:07:46. > :07:49.is that we make tennis more accessible for people. It is for

:07:50. > :07:56.anyone, of any age, of any background. Especially with certain

:07:57. > :08:03.communities, we were not getting involved as much, especially the

:08:04. > :08:09.Asian community. They go to an education background, to become a

:08:10. > :08:13.doctor, a nurse, or a pharmacist. There are 600 new tennis coaches who

:08:14. > :08:19.have been through fast-track programmes. This programme has been

:08:20. > :08:24.very successful in getting people like him involved, giving him the

:08:25. > :08:30.basic skills to give these sessions. In sped of communities -- instead of

:08:31. > :08:36.communities coming to sport, it is the sport coming to the community.

:08:37. > :08:41.The scheme is set to be rolled out nationally. The key is locking in

:08:42. > :08:47.the enthusiasm of people and turning wide-eyed wonder into a passion for

:08:48. > :08:53.tennis. You get to learn and play at the same time. The best thing is to

:08:54. > :08:57.win matches together. I already know lots about football so I thought I

:08:58. > :09:05.might learn tennis and become better. We need more people like Bal

:09:06. > :09:12.doing such a good thing with the community. The whole emphasis is on

:09:13. > :09:18.fun. This is why I am doing this and it makes me want to do things like

:09:19. > :09:22.this, keep setting up different projects because, at the end of the

:09:23. > :09:26.day, if they are not smiling, I am not smiling.

:09:27. > :09:34.So, get inspired. There is the website. Even if it is not a

:09:35. > :09:38.glorious day, get out to your local tennis club and get involved because

:09:39. > :09:43.the summer is coming, and, who knows, you could be playing a Davis

:09:44. > :09:45.Cup tie. That is what Andy Murray or Judy Murray would have thought with

:09:46. > :09:54.her young boys all those years ago. Talking about Judy Murray, she has

:09:55. > :10:02.been at Andy's hotel in Scotland. It has been a busy week for the family.

:10:03. > :10:09.It is tennis a sport, John, that you don't play at at eight, nine or ten,

:10:10. > :10:16.is it too late, or can you do it later? You can. Tennis is not an

:10:17. > :10:19.easy game to learn. The thing when you play with the soft tennis

:10:20. > :10:26.balls, I don't know what they call that, the soft tennis, I think it is

:10:27. > :10:31.a tough sport and you have to get lessons, and it is tough for people

:10:32. > :10:36.to take it up later. They swing in the park, they whack a few balls,

:10:37. > :10:40.they pick the ball is out of the fence. You have to get more coaches

:10:41. > :10:45.involved, and get lessons going so they learn the basics. But it is a

:10:46. > :10:50.game for life so we have to promote it as a game for life. How many can

:10:51. > :11:00.you play for life? Golf, swimming perhaps. In golf, you are mostly in

:11:01. > :11:06.the golf cart! Curling! But you don't really get the heart rate up.

:11:07. > :11:11.But the point is well made. The other thing, I personally feel that

:11:12. > :11:17.indoor facilities are paramount in Britain. Whatever the weather is

:11:18. > :11:22.outside today, you are less likely to go out if the weather is

:11:23. > :11:28.miserable than if it isn't. It is a truism, isn't it? And you have to

:11:29. > :11:35.make it less expensive but you have to pay for heating and lights. Now,

:11:36. > :11:39.to James Ward. A couple of weeks ago, against Sam Querrey, James Ward

:11:40. > :11:44.had arguably his finest victory of his career so far. It was this wind

:11:45. > :11:49.that took Britain into the position we're in now which giving James Ward

:11:50. > :11:55.a chance to get Britain into our first semifinals of the Davis Cup

:11:56. > :11:58.for 33 years. That was his reaction at his extraordinary victory. It was

:11:59. > :12:03.extraordinary thinking about what Sam Querrey has done over the years.

:12:04. > :12:10.That was a monumental moment for James Ward, he can do it on the

:12:11. > :12:15.biggest stage. How much more of a challenge is today? A lot more. Sam

:12:16. > :12:22.Querrey isn't a clay-court specialist. Seppi is. This is a

:12:23. > :12:26.ferocious crowd. This will be without question the biggest test of

:12:27. > :12:31.his career. We talk about getting off to a good start but I would

:12:32. > :12:35.guess this is paramount. If James Ward gets down here and loses the

:12:36. > :12:41.first set, he has got a mountain to climb. It is going to be a snowball

:12:42. > :12:46.effect with the snowball gathering momentum. You don't want that to get

:12:47. > :12:50.bigger. If you can stop the rot, keep the crowd out of it, Seppi will

:12:51. > :12:55.start doubting, he has a lot of pressure on him, he has a lot of

:12:56. > :13:01.expectation on him. He is the overwhelming favourite. He has a

:13:02. > :13:09.reputation of being a choker in matches and this is a big match. The

:13:10. > :13:13.crowd expect him to win, they have never heard of James Ward before, he

:13:14. > :13:19.is the overwhelming favourite. If James Ward can win the set, we've

:13:20. > :13:23.got a match on our hands. If he loses, it's a struggle. As the match

:13:24. > :13:35.was slipping away from Andy, would the Davis Cup captain have a -- the

:13:36. > :13:40.option to change players? I think James Ward deserved to play this

:13:41. > :13:46.match. He is an experienced Davis Cup they are. He has played a lot of

:13:47. > :13:55.matches. And I think he will relish this occasion. I just think that the

:13:56. > :13:59.ability of Seppi is great. He is a better player. I think this first

:14:00. > :14:02.set is critical and I hope he hasn't been damaged too much by Andy

:14:03. > :14:12.getting thumped in three straight sets, which no one was expecting. A

:14:13. > :14:18.lot of people in the crowd will not know about James Ward. You might not

:14:19. > :14:21.know about him watching at home. 161 in the world, but this is a

:14:22. > :14:26.phenomenal opportunity for him to catapult himself into the national

:14:27. > :14:29.sporting consciousness. How much in a situation like this is it about

:14:30. > :14:33.self belief? How much does he have to say to himself, I know I am a

:14:34. > :14:36.good player and I've got to seize the moment?

:14:37. > :14:48.He has a lot of self belief, and the winds again Tursunov and others, he

:14:49. > :14:51.knows he can win. He has to win one time and the pressure is on my

:14:52. > :14:59.opponent, so let's go out there and do what I know I can do. Big

:15:00. > :15:04.serving? Big serving and big hitting. When it comes to firepower

:15:05. > :15:08.and attacking prowess, he has the type of game Andy does. Andy is much

:15:09. > :15:12.better defensively, but if you can be on the front foot more, he

:15:13. > :15:16.doesn't have to defend so much. He's got to get onto the front foot. They

:15:17. > :15:21.say in the game these days you have to have big weapons and he has a

:15:22. > :15:26.very good backhand and big serve. His forehand isn't bad. His mobility

:15:27. > :15:31.is suspect. But he has to start getting in charge of the points. He

:15:32. > :15:40.has to get on top of them otherwise it will be a short night. We can see

:15:41. > :15:45.how close he was against Fognini in the first match. That will all be

:15:46. > :15:50.stuff that Leon Smith will be pumping into him saying, look what

:15:51. > :16:02.you did to the guy who demolished Andy Murray. 70-30? I've still got

:16:03. > :16:10.to say 70-30. I think it is going to be close. I think Seppi will edge it

:16:11. > :16:14.out, but I hope I am wrong. We think it is going to be a great fight from

:16:15. > :16:19.James Ward. Because it has been a tremendous tide, looking at it, we

:16:20. > :16:25.have had four falling from different matches, and it all comes down to

:16:26. > :16:32.this. The last throw of the dice for Great Britain and Italy, and a large

:16:33. > :16:37.throw of the dice for James Ward. So, interesting, your comments or

:16:38. > :16:43.extensive during the Murray game. An overwhelming feeling for -- from

:16:44. > :16:48.those watching that if Murray hadn't played the doubles today, he would

:16:49. > :16:53.have been in better shape today. We are where we are, that is

:16:54. > :16:56.immaterial. But if you have any thoughts of what might happen over

:16:57. > :17:01.the next couple of hours, get in touch with us. You have plenty of

:17:02. > :17:05.other sporting options to watch this afternoon, other lifestyle options,

:17:06. > :17:12.too, so if you cannot stay with us on BBC One, you've always got BBC

:17:13. > :17:21.Radio Five Live, you've got the BBC sports app and the website. This is

:17:22. > :17:26.a fantastic looking arena on the Bay of Naples. How much do you wish you

:17:27. > :17:33.were there cheering James Ward on on this glorious Sunday afternoon?

:17:34. > :17:38.Anyway, let's go to our commentators.

:17:39. > :17:45.This is a great angle we are getting. Jealousy for everyone

:17:46. > :17:48.watching, I am sure! These guys are there, and they have offered

:17:49. > :17:56.terrific support for Great Britain across the weekend and the team

:17:57. > :17:58.needs them more than ever. I can completely understand the point of

:17:59. > :18:03.view of those arguing that Murray should have been arrested. But look

:18:04. > :18:10.at it this way. -- should have been rested. Fognini was great.

:18:11. > :18:15.Yesterday, playing Murray gave Britain the best chance of winning

:18:16. > :18:20.that match. So, had Fleming and Hutchins lost, Murray could easily

:18:21. > :18:24.have lost today the way Fognini played, and then it would be over,

:18:25. > :18:33.done and dusted, pack your bags, watch the Rugby League. But Britain

:18:34. > :18:39.still has a chance right now. The fifth and final rubber of the tie.

:18:40. > :18:43.Who will go through? Italy or Great Britain? Well, on the last two

:18:44. > :18:47.occasions, Britain has been involved in tyres which have gone is the full

:18:48. > :18:56.distance and they have won thanks to James Ward and Dan Evans. In

:18:57. > :19:02.Coventry against Russia. And against the Slovak Republic as well in

:19:03. > :19:13.Glasgow. James Ward did not win on the final day. Evans did. Evans will

:19:14. > :19:20.be watching from the sidelines. This time, James Ward attempts to bring

:19:21. > :19:27.it home. Important factor and figures for you. James Ward is down

:19:28. > :19:34.at 161 in the world rankings. -- important facts and figures. This is

:19:35. > :19:40.a mystery for all of us who have seen him play so well in his career.

:19:41. > :19:46.He is from London, he is an Arsenal fan, who have just kicked off

:19:47. > :19:52.against Everton. As for Andreas Seppi, he is 30 now, 44 in the

:19:53. > :19:56.world, a career high-ranking of 18, just over a year ago. He is finished

:19:57. > :20:01.the last two seasons inside the top 25, so a much higher level of

:20:02. > :20:11.competitive play than his opponent today. Four wins on the tour from 12

:20:12. > :20:15.matches. Has come up against some tough opponents. David Ferrer in

:20:16. > :20:35.Miami, Wawrinka in India well. He lost to Murray on day one. It was

:20:36. > :21:03.tighter, though, than the scoreline suggested. He troubled Murray.

:21:04. > :21:21.Carlos Ramos is the umpire for this one.

:21:22. > :21:28.Interesting start. Maybe it is a sign of how Seppi is feeling right

:21:29. > :25:01.now. He didn't move his feet well, James

:25:02. > :25:05.Ward. That was a lazy looking shot. The first thing that goes when you

:25:06. > :25:10.are nervous is your feet. You've got to tell yourself to move your feet.

:25:11. > :25:30.It sounds obvious, but that is what happens when you get tight.

:25:31. > :25:38.That was a great backhand. Just struck on the line. He needed that

:25:39. > :26:25.one badly. It was going to be 0-40. A good dipping passing shot, James

:26:26. > :26:48.Ward. So tough to volley that one up.

:26:49. > :27:02.The danger for James Ward is that his opponent might be too solid.

:27:03. > :27:08.When you are way down the rankings like years, you don't have as much

:27:09. > :27:11.competitive experience at this level, playing this type of player.

:27:12. > :27:32.And that is the key. It is an early break. The comeback

:27:33. > :27:37.in the tie is well and truly on. It was shaping up to be a good return,

:27:38. > :28:27.but James Ward is not quick on his feet to get up to the ball.

:28:28. > :28:35.What a shot that was! I don't think Seppi thought that at ten three had

:28:36. > :28:40.a chance to get that back! You should have covered that. That was

:28:41. > :29:11.the only place that Ward could have got to.

:29:12. > :29:24.He is having to dig in, scramble, outmanoeuvre his man. He can find

:29:25. > :29:26.his armoury. Anything can happen from Britain. But it is not going to

:29:27. > :31:03.happen easily. That is a very good response s

:31:04. > :31:08.really good from Ward. Because at times, he will have to do

:31:09. > :31:11.some spectacular stuff if he is to which the match. There demonstrating

:31:12. > :31:16.he can do the basic stuff and down there, toe to toe and win those

:31:17. > :31:20.rallies. It was a good effort to come back, he loses the early break,

:31:21. > :31:26.he looked tight in the first two games, to come back and break serve

:31:27. > :31:30.straight away and stop his opponent going to a 3-0 lead, that was big. A

:31:31. > :31:36.couple of rallies where he was not afraid to go toe to toe, and looked

:31:37. > :31:42.solid. He has to keep the, sort of head in these rally, because the

:31:43. > :31:47.movement wise, Seppi is a lot quicker round the court, and once

:31:48. > :31:55.James Ward gets a move too much at the angle, he is going to be in a

:31:56. > :32:00.bit of trouble. A good game there. Because Seppi has spent a lot of his

:32:01. > :32:04.career being the number one ranked Italian in Davis Cup. It has only

:32:05. > :32:09.been the last few years Fognini has got to where he is in the world. He

:32:10. > :32:13.doesn't have much experience of playing deciding rubbers, Seppi and

:32:14. > :32:20.his crept record not that great. Overall he has lost as many matches

:32:21. > :32:28.in Davis Cup than he has won. -- recent. Lost in Argentina,

:32:29. > :32:37.earlier in the year. Defeat to Raonic last year and

:32:38. > :32:41.Cilic. A man who has struggled to win

:32:42. > :32:46.really big matches for his country in this competition.

:32:47. > :32:49.That being said, those three names are pretty tough opponents. They are

:32:50. > :33:17.good players. Absolutely. I think the only time he has played

:33:18. > :33:20.a live fifth deciding rubber was way back ten years ago. He beat Georgia

:33:21. > :34:56.3-2. That is one of the points that is

:34:57. > :35:00.too good. Ward did well, got himself out a couple of tough positions on

:35:01. > :35:06.the court. Seppi does hit the ball early, he

:35:07. > :35:17.hits on the rise, especially on that backhand side, he is dangerous.

:35:18. > :35:22.It is interesting to see how much he uses the tactics that we noticed

:35:23. > :35:26.that Andy Murray used against Seppi, the slice to get the ball low on

:35:27. > :35:31.Seppi's forehand, we saw it already once in this match, but he hasn't

:35:32. > :35:37.used it yet since then. James Ward is not known as the craft

:35:38. > :35:45.player, he is more of a big hitter. It was so effective, that perhaps he

:35:46. > :36:01.could throw that one in, to mix them up a little bit apse... And keep

:36:02. > :36:14.Seppi off balance. A couple of free points on his serve.

:36:15. > :36:23.The match has come down to a fifth. Highlights of Leon Smith's bold

:36:24. > :36:27.decision to go with Ward again, rewarding him for his victory in

:36:28. > :36:36.America. His rival Dan Evans watching on.

:36:37. > :36:40.Vanes of course a man who -- Evans of course who has won this sort of

:36:41. > :36:44.match, not this sort of match because this is quarter-final, won a

:36:45. > :36:48.live fifth match for Britain. He would have loved to have played,

:36:49. > :36:52.I am sure. Still think it is the right choice?

:36:53. > :36:58.Yes, I think it is. If it had been on a different surface it might be

:36:59. > :37:03.more of a close thing. I think on clay...

:37:04. > :37:24.Evans has not hat a great record on clay and Ward likes clay. -- had.

:37:25. > :37:33.Special Andy Flower his result against Sam query, it is tough to

:37:34. > :38:52.rule him out. -- especially after.

:38:53. > :39:04.Holds for 3-2. Break of serve. Winners through to

:39:05. > :39:07.play either Switzerland or Kazakhstan in the last four of the

:39:08. > :39:12.competition and what a weekend it has been in Geneva, Kazakhstan

:39:13. > :39:19.surprisingly winning against Wawrinka on day one, and then the

:39:20. > :39:24.doubles and how about this, Wawrinka is getting beat 1-0 in rubber four.

:39:25. > :39:27.Trying to seal the day away from home against the Australian Open

:39:28. > :39:35.champion. Keep you in touch with that. These are the scenes in Naples

:39:36. > :39:39.today. Seppi and Ward both getting the instruction from their

:39:40. > :39:43.respective captains. The British fans hoping that this is going to be

:39:44. > :39:48.a fairly tail end to their weekend by the sea.

:39:49. > :39:53.Certainly the locals are the ones feeling more confident at the

:39:54. > :39:57.moment. That would be some upset if

:39:58. > :40:01.Kazakhstan could complete the trick I have in Switzerland. That would

:40:02. > :40:05.be, that was a foregone conclusion, that the Swiss were going to win

:40:06. > :40:13.that match. I mean, if they win that one, that is one of the biggest

:40:14. > :40:19.upsets probably ever. Wawrinka number three in the world.

:40:20. > :40:23.Federer number four. Away from home. As a doubled team nay won the gold

:40:24. > :40:25.medal. Exactly. It is unbelievable they could lose that match. . It is

:40:26. > :40:37.not over yet, but still... Nice to be able to have Roger

:40:38. > :40:43.Federer to come in and play your fifth and deciding rubber if it

:40:44. > :40:54.comes to that, that might be leaving Steven Gerrard to be your fifth

:40:55. > :40:59.penalty taker and not being needed. Tsonga is looking good in his match

:41:00. > :41:04.for frans against Germany. Trying to level the tie. Two sets and a break

:41:05. > :41:15.Tsonga leads against Kamke. -- France.

:41:16. > :41:22.Lovely backhand. A little risky, but great execution on the left. He has

:41:23. > :43:09.a very good handed backhand, he can do a lot who -- a lot with it.

:43:10. > :43:19.That was one fortunate there. He picked the wrong option.

:43:20. > :43:24.Seppi there, he faked it where he was going to go and held his ground

:43:25. > :44:30.and stayed where he was and Ward played right to him.

:44:31. > :44:35.Let us see if James Ward can respond as quickly as the last time he was

:44:36. > :46:20.broken. That is an excellent 1-2 punch from

:46:21. > :46:25.the Italian. Really moved up to it quickly. He

:46:26. > :46:29.knows the return was going to come short. He gives his opponent less

:46:30. > :46:30.time to cover the rest of the court and execute the forehand

:46:31. > :47:53.beautifully. Oh, that's another one for Britain!

:47:54. > :48:01.He will need a few more of those today, I am sure.

:48:02. > :48:05.There is nothing that Andreas Seppi wants more than a nice stress free

:48:06. > :48:13.couple of hours. Up toward to make this tight. To heap the pressure on.

:48:14. > :48:31.-- stress-free. That is so good. Clay Court Ten

:48:32. > :48:36.necessary there at its finest. I think he sees, as soon as he has

:48:37. > :48:41.James Ward on the run, James Ward will back off to cover as much court

:48:42. > :48:45.as he can. He has to compensate for having less speed round the court,

:48:46. > :49:33.and as soon as he does that, he puts in a drop shot and James Ward

:49:34. > :49:36.doesn't, he can't react to that. Soon as he does that, he puts in a

:49:37. > :49:38.drop shot and James Ward doesn't, he can't react to that.

:49:39. > :49:42.As Spot good hitting there. Good striking of the ball.

:49:43. > :49:46.He seemed to increase the tempo there and the point well along. He

:49:47. > :49:50.got more confident. Increased it. Just squeezed and squeezed a bit

:49:51. > :50:28.more and got the area he was looking for.

:50:29. > :50:52.Excellent recovery from Ward in this game.

:50:53. > :51:02.Second time in the set, Italy have broken. Britain have hit straight

:51:03. > :51:06.back. Great mental fort #250ud, that takes

:51:07. > :51:13.a lot of focus and Den determination to keep bouncing back.

:51:14. > :51:16.It's a big let off. An easy volley. I don't know what he did. He must

:51:17. > :51:21.have taken the eye off the ball. That is what he said. That is

:51:22. > :51:28.probably what he was is talking about. The captain will be say

:51:29. > :51:34.saying you should have done it. Credit to James Ward he stayed after

:51:35. > :51:38.that point, and twice he has been down break, he knows now, against

:51:39. > :51:42.Seppi if he does go down, Seppi is not a great holder of his serve, he

:51:43. > :51:48.can certainly break back at any time. And he is back in the match

:51:49. > :51:53.again. A big match. Not just for the man

:51:54. > :52:00.sitting down but also for the man standing up. Leon myth, the young

:52:01. > :52:07.British captain, with an excellent recent record in Davis Cup. Just the

:52:08. > :52:11.one refeet. Eight victories to his name. It is times like this, there

:52:12. > :52:14.is only so much you can do when you are chatting away to Andy Murray,

:52:15. > :52:20.one of the best players in the world, times like this a much lower

:52:21. > :52:40.ranked player, when a captain has to earn his corn.

:52:41. > :52:48.Four breaks of serve in the seven games so far. Ward severing now at

:52:49. > :52:55.4--- 3-4. First set. That was awe surprise there from

:52:56. > :53:20.Seppi, for hand down. -- that was a surprise there from

:53:21. > :55:59.Seppi, forehand down. Nice sever from Ward. He could never

:56:00. > :56:06.have expected to return from that. Terrific return. Seppi ahead. This

:56:07. > :56:11.is a squash court forehand return. That is the way to improvise on a

:56:12. > :56:17.shot. That was a fantastic return. There is the very very happy victor

:56:18. > :56:26.of the previous match, who put on a magnificent performance today.

:56:27. > :56:28.Fabio Fognini. What an execution of clay court tennis he put on today,

:56:29. > :57:44.against Andy Murray. We will hear from Andy Murray at the

:57:45. > :58:12.end of this set S it will be interesting to hear from him.

:58:13. > :58:18.He wasn't quite in the right position. He wanted to hit a very

:58:19. > :58:22.good shot from it. The better guys that are moving like Fabio and Andy,

:58:23. > :58:26.when they are out of position they put in a nice high floater, give

:58:27. > :58:30.them a chance to get back in to position. But there, just one snatch

:58:31. > :59:09.at it and that is why he missed the ball.

:59:10. > :59:17.Oh dear. Dear, dear, dear. He might be in the lead but he is far from

:59:18. > :59:23.settled. He does get tight. This was a tight looking overhead. Manoeuvred

:59:24. > :59:27.himself perfectly, and see he stopped moving his feet there and

:59:28. > :59:32.got stationery too soon and was off balance on the overhead. Didn't get

:59:33. > :59:52.behind the ball and attack it. Go after it.

:59:53. > :59:57.That service... That was the middle of the service box. I know it

:59:58. > :00:02.clipped the net but there was no pace on it. You can see he is tied.

:00:03. > :00:09.That is why James has to come in and put pressure on even more.

:00:10. > :00:19.Very good. If he is this tied serving for the first said, imagine

:00:20. > :00:28.what he is like if it goes wrong. Oh, we don't need this. I wonder if

:00:29. > :00:31.he can get the break before they stop. You can play through drizzle

:00:32. > :00:59.on clay courts, no problem. What a dreadful service game from

:01:00. > :01:03.the Italian. Huge bonus for Britain, if there is an interruption. Let's

:01:04. > :01:09.be honest, how many good service games have we seen? That is just

:01:10. > :01:13.nerves, right there. Once again, just showing you what it is like to

:01:14. > :01:18.try and close out a fifth Davis Cup rubber, especially when you are an

:01:19. > :01:24.overwhelming favourite. It looks like it is starting to come down a

:01:25. > :01:32.bit here. It was forecast this morning. Fingers crossed it is not

:01:33. > :01:41.going to be hard enough to force everyone off court. The Thai referee

:01:42. > :01:50.has just put his jacket on, which isn't the greatest sign in the

:01:51. > :01:52.world. -- the tie referee. So the last four games have gone against

:01:53. > :02:08.the Serb, and six of the last eight. And even though Ward is suffering as

:02:09. > :02:13.much as Seppi on serve, it has to be good news generally, doesn't it, for

:02:14. > :02:16.Britain? If Seppi is getting this tight in the first set and Ward can

:02:17. > :02:23.hang with him, there will be chances. I think if Ward gets into

:02:24. > :02:29.his rhythm, it should be able -- easier for him to hold his serve

:02:30. > :02:33.than Seppi, he has the bigger backhand and forehand. But he hasn't

:02:34. > :02:38.found that stride yet, neither has Seppi. It would be good if he could

:02:39. > :02:43.get a cold here and put the pressure on. I don't think it is going to

:02:44. > :02:47.happen, the rain is getting heavier. Carlos Ramos has come onto the court

:02:48. > :02:54.and I think everyone is in agreement that the players should sit down and

:02:55. > :02:56.take a break. Often when the players sit down on their chairs in

:02:57. > :03:17.situations like this, sit down on their chairs in

:03:18. > :03:22.anything back in the hands of the grand stuff, do we? In terms of the

:03:23. > :03:29.covers! Otherwise we will be back tomorrow -- the ground staff. Going

:03:30. > :03:41.on what they did on day one. Ward has a very important service

:03:42. > :03:49.game to come. After all those breaks, it is 5-4 Seppi.

:03:50. > :03:51.JOHN INVERDALE: Effectively, it is on serve, to all intents and

:03:52. > :03:56.purposes, which means the matches evenly poised. Everyone is bailing

:03:57. > :04:01.out because of the weather. As things stand, it is all square as

:04:02. > :04:06.far as the matches are concerned at 2-2, following Fabio Fognini's

:04:07. > :04:10.emphatic victory over Andy Murray this morning, and that does mean

:04:11. > :04:14.that everything, in terms of Great Britain's Davis Cup ambitions, rests

:04:15. > :04:17.on the outcome of this James Ward and Andreas Seppi match. Not

:04:18. > :04:18.surprisingly, Andy Murray was pretty downbeat after his defeat earlier

:04:19. > :04:21.on. I know that will be a tough loss for

:04:22. > :04:30.you, but you did run then, I know that will be a tough loss for

:04:31. > :04:33.you, but I I'm sure you would agree, to an inspired opponent. He played

:04:34. > :04:39.some great stuff at important periods of the match and that was

:04:40. > :04:41.the main difference, really. When I had my opportunities, I was a little

:04:42. > :04:45.bit disappointed in myself and when had my opportunities, I was a little

:04:46. > :04:50.bit disappointed he had his, he was exceptional, so credit to him. You

:04:51. > :04:54.have played a lot of tennis, in the space of 26, 27 hours, you had a

:04:55. > :04:59.virus earlier in the week. Did you feel more tired than you would

:05:00. > :05:03.expect to at this stage? I was tired when I got up, but I felt OK when I

:05:04. > :05:07.got out there. It is hard in that kind of atmosphere -- not hard in

:05:08. > :05:11.that kind of atmosphere to get yourself up for the match. I did OK

:05:12. > :05:15.physically in the match, I have definitely felt worse in tennis

:05:16. > :05:18.matches on clay and I have played a lot on this surface over the last

:05:19. > :05:23.couple of years, and struggled with my back, but today was OK. Tell us

:05:24. > :05:27.about that atmosphere. Where you are unhappy at times with the way people

:05:28. > :05:30.in the crowd were calling out and a little bit of chat coming from the

:05:31. > :05:36.Italian captain as you were serving? The atmosphere was a Davis Cup

:05:37. > :05:41.atmosphere. We don't get that on a day-to-day basis on the ATP Tour,

:05:42. > :05:48.but when you play away from home and come to these sorts of places, you

:05:49. > :05:51.expect that. But, yeah, I just asked one time for the captain not to

:05:52. > :05:59.speak while I am serving, because he's right there on the court.

:06:00. > :06:03.That's not a major issue at all. So it was fine. And finally, it is not

:06:04. > :06:08.over yet. James Ward has shown what he can do in Davis Cup situations

:06:09. > :06:14.before. Yeah, he played a great match on Friday, and he has played

:06:15. > :06:19.probably his best tennis in the Davis Cup over the course of his

:06:20. > :06:22.career, so I'm sure it'll be another great match and there is a lot of

:06:23. > :06:26.pressure on Seppi to perform, hopefully James will use that to his

:06:27. > :06:31.advantage. That was Murray speaking earlier on. And I think the players

:06:32. > :06:38.have now left the court, there goes James Ward, and it seems that the

:06:39. > :06:50.6,000 crowd have all vacated the arena for various outlets selling

:06:51. > :06:55.peanut pinot grigio and various things. Seppi is still on court, but

:06:56. > :06:59.I imagine it is only a matter of time before he follows James Ward.

:07:00. > :07:03.It is impossible to know how long the delay will be but the only thing

:07:04. > :07:06.to say, from a positive point of view, that because it is a clay

:07:07. > :07:11.court, and they haven't covered it yet, the conditions will not impact

:07:12. > :07:15.on that kind of surface as they would do at Wimbledon court without

:07:16. > :07:19.a roof or a hard court, where the surface can become slippery very

:07:20. > :07:24.quickly. There goes Seppi. So both players are now off court and I

:07:25. > :07:28.suspect it could be ten or 15 minutes or so. Who is to say? Very

:07:29. > :07:32.conflicting weather forecasts we have had. One this morning said it

:07:33. > :07:35.would be glorious and the other said there might be showers. The one that

:07:36. > :07:39.said there might be showers was clearly a little bit more accurate.

:07:40. > :07:43.Confirmation of how the quarterfinals of this Davis Cup

:07:44. > :07:48.currently stand. The Czech Republic won yesterday, taking an

:07:49. > :07:52.unassailable 3-0 lead against Japan. So they played two dead rubbers

:07:53. > :07:56.today in the game and the Czech Republic are through, the defending

:07:57. > :07:59.champions. They will play the winner of France against Germany. Germany

:08:00. > :08:04.were 2-0 up in the opening singles but Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has just won

:08:05. > :08:10.in the fourth rubber of that match, so they have a deciding match in

:08:11. > :08:15.Nancy. Italy and Great Britain, you know, is 2-2. And the winner of this

:08:16. > :08:18.match, whoever it might be, will play the winner of Kazakhstan

:08:19. > :08:23.against Switzerland. We mentioned this a few times yesterday, but

:08:24. > :08:27.Kazakhstan had beaten Wawrinka and Federer in the doubles, which was a

:08:28. > :08:31.real upset. Wawrinka is playing Kukushkin in the first of the

:08:32. > :08:39.reverse singles and Wawrinka lost the first set, but just levelled it

:08:40. > :08:42.at 1-1, I'm hearing. So that match is very much teetering and I am sure

:08:43. > :08:47.there is a great buzz in the indoor arena in Geneva. But the point we

:08:48. > :08:50.made repeatedly is that this is the only one of the 4/4-finals that are

:08:51. > :08:56.taking place outdoors, and it was a brave move by the Italians --

:08:57. > :09:01.quarterfinals. They could have faded further north but they too could

:09:02. > :09:05.serve because of the guarantee of better weather --played it. Some of

:09:06. > :09:10.those aerial shots are magnificent, nestling into the Bay of Naples with

:09:11. > :09:13.the Isle of Capri out at sea, but we have rather been undone by the

:09:14. > :09:16.weather, which kibosh to things on Friday for Andy Murray and provided

:09:17. > :09:22.the major interruption at the moment. John Lloyd, we will talk

:09:23. > :09:26.about the state of play generally, but also reflect on Andy Murray's

:09:27. > :09:30.match this morning. He played well to start off with. He went after him

:09:31. > :09:34.right at the beginning and was very aggressive, taking the ball early

:09:35. > :09:38.and putting pressure on Fognini's server and it worked for about four

:09:39. > :09:40.games, but Fognini just kept hanging in there.

:09:41. > :09:42.server and it worked for about four games, but Fognini just kept His

:09:43. > :09:48.movement was so good and his variety started coming about and you could

:09:49. > :09:53.see why Fognini is such a good clay-court player. His footwork

:09:54. > :09:57.around the court, Murray was trying these punishing ground strokes side

:09:58. > :10:02.to side but he just sort of bands over and slides into the ball, then

:10:03. > :10:07.comes up with a drop shot. Some of the points were magnificent. This

:10:08. > :10:13.rally was 29 or 30 shots, the quality of the tennis, you look at

:10:14. > :10:17.the score at the end, a loss of ten games, but it wasn't that kind of

:10:18. > :10:22.match. The quality of the tennis, the hitting, was exceptional. That

:10:23. > :10:25.was a great winner from Andy Murray, but actually, the outstanding shots,

:10:26. > :10:30.numerically, were coming from Fognini more than Murray, and I

:10:31. > :10:33.think perhaps in advance, you know, we were talking about would we need

:10:34. > :10:39.to show the deciding rubber, would there be a dead rubber? Would award

:10:40. > :10:43.and Seppi just shake hands and say, we won't bother playing at --ward.

:10:44. > :10:50.We were kind of overlooking what an outstanding player on clay Fognini

:10:51. > :10:54.is, you don't become number 13 in the world and be a pushover in the

:10:55. > :10:59.Davis Cup tie and some of the tennis he played was magnificent. Well, his

:11:00. > :11:03.record is superb. We didn't think this would be a pushover, obviously,

:11:04. > :11:07.but I just felt the way that Murray has played, with the two grand slam

:11:08. > :11:15.titles and, he has looked so good, and Fognini hasn't played well,

:11:16. > :11:20.apart from today, when he needed to. He kept his head together. The

:11:21. > :11:24.doubles, the first two sets, he was awful. He didn't play well against a

:11:25. > :11:37.James Ward. But when the occasion demanded it, you could see, he is a

:11:38. > :11:41.bit like killing the -- Nastase. Sometimes, he plays the wrong shot

:11:42. > :11:47.and doesn't hit the ball, but today, he was tactically spot-on and his

:11:48. > :11:51.movement was far too good. In terms of Andy's performance over the last

:11:52. > :11:55.three days, how much do we think today was influenced by the fact

:11:56. > :12:00.that he had to play a game and a half, almost a game and three

:12:01. > :12:04.quarters, yesterday? It is difficult to say. It looks like he was

:12:05. > :12:08.struggling towards the end, but that doesn't affect Fognini's

:12:09. > :12:13.performance. His performance was just superior. I think Andy would

:12:14. > :12:16.admit that as well. If he was fresher, would it have made a

:12:17. > :12:25.massive difference? Maybe. It is not the shore. -- it is not for sure. We

:12:26. > :12:29.had to rush through earlier, because the players were on court, but we

:12:30. > :12:32.spoke about the overwhelming number of people on social media contacting

:12:33. > :12:36.us saying that it Murray hadn't played yesterday, he would have been

:12:37. > :12:41.fresher and wouldn't have tailed off in the match. It is interesting, but

:12:42. > :12:44.there is no guarantee that Fognini wouldn't have played like that

:12:45. > :12:47.anyway, and Murray would have lost. And if Ross Hutchins and Colin

:12:48. > :12:52.Fleming had played yesterday and would have lost, it would be game

:12:53. > :12:56.over by now anyway. Of course, he would have been fresher. Mentally,

:12:57. > :13:01.to play the two matches, is tough. I think it did have a difference. He

:13:02. > :13:04.didn't admit it but I think he was slightly tired. Whether it made a

:13:05. > :13:11.difference, who knows? But as captain, Leon Smith made the right

:13:12. > :13:14.choice. Firstly, Andy wanted to play. You have to get the rubbers

:13:15. > :13:20.when you can get them. You can't predict and say it will get tight

:13:21. > :13:25.and I will hold him back. Fleming and Hutchings are a good team, but

:13:26. > :13:29.would they have beaten the Italians? It was 50-50 at best. And I'm being

:13:30. > :13:32.generous. You have to be a very strong captain when Andy Murray says

:13:33. > :13:38.he wants to play in the doubles and you say, "I'm going to give you a

:13:39. > :13:43.rest. " It is not going to happen. If you are a number one player like

:13:44. > :13:48.Andy, all Djokovic, and they want to play, you play them. At the end of

:13:49. > :13:52.the match, match point, it was symptomatic of how the game ebbed

:13:53. > :14:00.away from Andy, with neither here nor there shot at the end. I think

:14:01. > :14:02.he was demoralised. It is not often that Andy Murray gets out and out

:14:03. > :14:07.beaten by a player, especially someone who is ranked below him. I

:14:08. > :14:11.don't remember many times it has happened. And to do it view our

:14:12. > :14:17.nation, when they really need you, he will feel like he has let his

:14:18. > :14:23.nation down. So it is a tough one to swallow, and that is why he has had

:14:24. > :14:27.his head down. It is only the second time that Andy Murray has ever lost

:14:28. > :14:31.a Davis Cup singles. The only other time he lost was his very first

:14:32. > :14:38.match, his debut, against Stanislaus Wawrinka, many, many years ago. You

:14:39. > :14:45.can see what it meant to be Italians after Fognini one. Absolutely. For

:14:46. > :14:48.Andy Murray, a lot of the matches he has played in a Davis Cup have been

:14:49. > :14:54.in the lower leagues, not his fault, he can only beat what is in front of

:14:55. > :14:57.him, but for us to stay in the Davis Cup and frame to play, he has to

:14:58. > :15:01.beat people in the top 20 and it is not easy to beat people in the

:15:02. > :15:06.calibre of the group that will be in the World Group from now on. In that

:15:07. > :15:09.British way that we do, deadbeat morose humour, we were saying that

:15:10. > :15:15.if we play Switzerland in the semifinals, Murray is not going to

:15:16. > :15:18.beat Federer, Wawrinka and then the doubles in succession, but stranger

:15:19. > :15:24.things have happened. So it would be nice to have the chance. I hope that

:15:25. > :15:28.if somehow James Ward can win this match, can you imagine that match?

:15:29. > :15:31.Semifinals against... Wherever they put it, they could sell three times

:15:32. > :15:38.the amount of tickets for that match. It is worth repeating that as

:15:39. > :15:46.things stand, Kazakhstan are very much in the box seat in that match.

:15:47. > :15:52.We all wanted to go to Kazakhstan big-time. I am googling all of the

:15:53. > :15:56.best hotels in Kazakhstan. That is the later in the afternoon. As far

:15:57. > :16:01.as the BBC is concerned, we have this, we have the Boat Race coming

:16:02. > :16:11.up, very, very busy next few weeks ahead.

:16:12. > :16:24.David Weir going for gold. A genius. Absolutely brilliant. Hamilton

:16:25. > :16:30.trying to defend. A scorching summer of sport, right here on the BBC.

:16:31. > :16:43.A lot of you are asking on Twitter, in the event of Great Britain facing

:16:44. > :16:47.Kazakhstan in the semifinals, why would it be in Kazakhstan? It was

:16:48. > :16:51.essentially tossing a coin because the two teams have never played in

:16:52. > :16:54.the Davis Cup before. The reason we would play in this country against

:16:55. > :16:58.Switzerland is because the last time they met in the Davis Cup, it was in

:16:59. > :17:03.Switzerland, so it was a reverse kind of way. Now you know. Let's go

:17:04. > :17:07.to Naples and see what the latest weather forecast is. We can talk to

:17:08. > :17:12.Russell Fuller. They haven't covered the court, which is presumably

:17:13. > :17:16.grounds for optimism? Yes, the clay court can take a few drops of rain,

:17:17. > :17:19.but it falls as we saw earlier in the week, when rainwater was spilled

:17:20. > :17:26.on the court when the covers were removed. They were close to putting

:17:27. > :17:31.the covers on. The referee of this tie was under the umbrella, it was

:17:32. > :17:37."shall we, shan't we?" It has taken a lot of rain but it has now stopped

:17:38. > :17:40.and I would say very amateur weather forecasting, looking at the sky,

:17:41. > :17:44.there is a good chance we will have a good, long, dry period now and

:17:45. > :17:48.hopefully complete this match. They have swept the court. No sign of the

:17:49. > :17:53.players or supporters on either bench yet, but when they come out,

:17:54. > :17:56.because they have been of for 15 minutes, there will be a

:17:57. > :18:00.three-minute knock up, which will help James Ward, because it is not

:18:01. > :18:07.easy coming out after a rain delay and having to hold your server. That

:18:08. > :18:09.aerial shot we have had, we have assumed that the weather forecast

:18:10. > :18:13.was in direct proportion to whether you consider are the Capri in the

:18:14. > :18:18.background. Looking at that, it seems to be mist and fog, so is that

:18:19. > :18:22.part of the weather conditions? I don't think the weather is coming

:18:23. > :18:25.from there, but I tend to take it from the island of Capri as well and

:18:26. > :18:29.I can see it clearly at the moment. It is meant to be beautiful. We

:18:30. > :18:33.haven't had a chance to get out there. It takes around 75 minutes to

:18:34. > :18:42.get out there on the very, very small island, about four square

:18:43. > :18:49.metres. And a tourist resort, it helps if you have a few pounds or

:18:50. > :18:52.euros. From memory, a very famous British author used to go to Capri

:18:53. > :18:56.and found his muse, which acted as the inspiration for a couple of his

:18:57. > :19:00.novels, but I can't remember who it was. It is kind of irrelevant.

:19:01. > :19:04.Someone will look it up. Russell, just a quick thought about how the

:19:05. > :19:08.match sits at the moment. There was only breaks of serve, James Ward had

:19:09. > :19:14.his serve broken so many times and then managed to break back, he's not

:19:15. > :19:18.going down without a fight? Know, very impressive start in terms of

:19:19. > :19:22.attitude from James Ward. You can tell that he believes he can win

:19:23. > :19:27.this match. Talking to him, there was very little debate about who

:19:28. > :19:32.would play in this tie, him or Daniel Evans. He said that Daniel

:19:33. > :19:35.very rarely plays on clay and because he has played a Challenger

:19:36. > :19:39.level on clay and after his performance against Sam Querrey in

:19:40. > :19:43.the United States, they should be very little doubt, but he has to

:19:44. > :19:46.play well above his ranking. And he has been making too many errors from

:19:47. > :19:51.the back of the court, both forehand and backhand. If he can get this

:19:52. > :19:55.first set, Seppi is very, very nervous indeed. It is not impossible

:19:56. > :20:02.that James Ward can win this but we are asking an enormous amount from

:20:03. > :20:07.him again. You are back at elite spoke to Andy Murray, he seemed very

:20:08. > :20:12.down, understandably so. Off-camera, what was he saying about the match

:20:13. > :20:16.against Fognini? Very similar things. He was not making any

:20:17. > :20:19.excuses whatsoever. He spoke a little more openly about the

:20:20. > :20:23.atmosphere and he is definitely not using this as an excuse, he quite

:20:24. > :20:26.likes the bearpit atmosphere. He says tennis can be a very polite

:20:27. > :20:29.sport. Football is definitely not using this as an excuse, he quite

:20:30. > :20:32.likes the bearpit atmosphere. He says tennis can be a very polite

:20:33. > :20:36.sport. Footballers get abuse all the time a couple of spectators shouting

:20:37. > :20:40.out "loser" when he was beginning to serve. Something that has been

:20:41. > :20:46.slightly annoying the British team, according to Murray, is the habit of

:20:47. > :20:51.the Italian captain talking just as a British player is about to serve.

:20:52. > :20:54.He said in his general press conference that that is something

:20:55. > :20:58.that has been going on all week. Thank you, Russell, we will come

:20:59. > :21:04.back to you in a few moments' time. I suspect we will have play soon.

:21:05. > :21:12.Gracie Fields, I have looked it up. Gracie Fields had a house on Capri

:21:13. > :21:16.and Somerset Maughan wrote the Lotus Eaters about it. What does Leon

:21:17. > :21:23.Smith say to James Ward in this rain break? He is playing well. Russell

:21:24. > :21:27.said he's making errors and he is, but he has to go free. He has to

:21:28. > :21:32.take risks, which he is doing, but he will also be saying that your

:21:33. > :21:35.opponent is nervous, as we can see. Keep on him, keep it close, keep

:21:36. > :21:40.going for the ball, keep that first serve going in and attack like you

:21:41. > :21:44.are doing and this guy will go. That is what he has to tell him, your

:21:45. > :21:47.opponent will go if you keep it close. The very nature of the

:21:48. > :21:50.rankings means that the guys at the top are better than the guys at the

:21:51. > :21:55.bottom, or more consistent, that is one of the key things. James Ward

:21:56. > :21:59.spends most of his life playing against people who will occasionally

:22:00. > :22:04.hit troughs in form which means that he will get a cheap points, one or

:22:05. > :22:10.two and sometimes barrel loads. The disadvantage of playing someone like

:22:11. > :22:13.Seppi, you don't get so many gifts, which must presumably put a lot more

:22:14. > :22:17.pressure on you to know that you have to be more consistent and you

:22:18. > :22:22.normally would be on a week --than you normally would be on a week by

:22:23. > :22:25.week basis. It makes a big difference to how you approach every

:22:26. > :22:30.point. Of course, but you need to think about it a different way. It

:22:31. > :22:36.doesn't matter who you are playing, can I win one service game? Yes. Can

:22:37. > :22:42.I win too? Yes. What is stopping me winning three, four, five, six? Take

:22:43. > :22:47.it game by game. Can I break once? Of course. So do it more often. If

:22:48. > :22:55.he holds his serve here, he has broken plenty of times, he will be

:22:56. > :22:58.in the driving seat and thinking I have a chance, and Seppi were we

:22:59. > :23:02.thinking, this is tied, I don't want to go down 1-0. And that is when the

:23:03. > :23:05.crowd might turn. And that will be crucial but having someone like Andy

:23:06. > :23:09.Murray in your camp for these training weeks, when you have the

:23:10. > :23:13.Davis Cup, when you play with the champion like that, and you

:23:14. > :23:22.practice, you see that they are so greedy. They hate making errors.

:23:23. > :23:25.When we went out that like you are talking about Jimmy Connors, it was

:23:26. > :23:32.exactly the same, it was almost unbearable, because you've refused

:23:33. > :23:35.to make an error in practice, never mind in a match. And he looks at you

:23:36. > :23:39.when you make an error and says, I am here for a tough match, what are

:23:40. > :23:43.you doing? You play Andy Murray and you see he doesn't miss. James Ward

:23:44. > :23:47.knows this is the level he has to get to and when you practice with

:23:48. > :23:50.him, you automatically go up a level. So these Davis Cup wins, I

:23:51. > :23:54.have always thought can help you with the rest of your tournaments,

:23:55. > :24:00.or they should do, because it is a great learning post. When you are

:24:01. > :24:03.training with Andy Murray, it is a lucky week for you. Apart from Pope

:24:04. > :24:06.your country, your learning from the best. I assure that with this rain

:24:07. > :24:14.break, Andy has been able to change and will literally be in James'

:24:15. > :24:18.corner, which he hasn't been able to be for the opening games and I am

:24:19. > :24:25.sure Seppi will have Fognini cheering him on as the Italians

:24:26. > :24:27.tried to get to a semifinal. And, if from our perspective, Italy went

:24:28. > :24:31.through and went on to win this Davis Cup, it does seem the

:24:32. > :24:37.tournament is wide open. The only time Italy ever won the Davis Cup

:24:38. > :24:45.was in... ? You are looking at me? It was your fault. It is my fault?

:24:46. > :24:54.1976. They beat us at Wimbledon. Out, my fault. I think your brother

:24:55. > :25:01.was involved as well. He was. It was. I am sure he not watching, so

:25:02. > :25:05.it was his fault. Beautiful blue skies in Naples, I suspect we will

:25:06. > :25:10.have play. And there is Andy Murray, showered and cleaned and

:25:11. > :25:14.welcome to shed for James Ward, as this match is fascinatingly poised

:25:15. > :25:18.-- shout. All of those breaks of serve and here we are with James

:25:19. > :25:28.Ward, in a few moments' time, about to serve and try and stay in the set

:25:29. > :25:29.at 5-down. Back to Jonathan. -- five -4.

:25:30. > :25:36.JONATHAN OVEREND: Nice to see the sun in Naples, knock up so they can

:25:37. > :25:42.get back in the feel of things, and then a fascinating position to

:25:43. > :25:46.restart. James Ward, 4-5 in the first set, trying to hold a sequence

:25:47. > :25:58.of four games that have gone against the serve. Six out of eight. Three

:25:59. > :26:02.occasions, Andreas Seppi has led by a break, and all three times, he has

:26:03. > :26:12.lost his serve straightaway. No need the covers during the rain

:26:13. > :26:16.break, and no need for a jacket or sweaters right now. It is rather

:26:17. > :26:24.nice out there and Carlos Ramos, our umpire from Portugal, he has been in

:26:25. > :26:26.this seed many times before, the Davis Cup, grand slam finals -- this

:26:27. > :26:40.seat. The crowd are trying to generate the

:26:41. > :26:45.atmosphere a game during the knock up, so that everyone is ready to go.

:26:46. > :26:55.There is the view out, it is looking a bit better, isn't it?

:26:56. > :27:07.The train them from Rome to Naples, just a couple of hours -- just a

:27:08. > :27:12.train down. Visiting the Rome Masters every year. Working too

:27:13. > :27:19.hard... James Ward, then, come on. This is a good situation, because

:27:20. > :27:26.4-2 down, and then 5-3 down, a lot of people thought he was out of the

:27:27. > :27:34.set. And this man, Seppi, looking very tight indeed. The momentum is

:27:35. > :27:39.with Italy, no doubt about it, and he is the favourite, Seppi, because

:27:40. > :27:43.of his much higher ranking, but this is far from over. He really does

:27:44. > :27:47.have a good chance, I think, in this situation. Now is the time, though.

:27:48. > :27:54.A James Ward holder will put the pressure on again. -- hold. And the

:27:55. > :28:02.nerves will just spread around the stadium, one would suspect. It is,

:28:03. > :28:07.without question, closing out a fifth match in the Davis Cup, other

:28:08. > :28:10.than the Grand Slams, without question the toughest thing for a

:28:11. > :28:14.tennis player to do. Doesn't matter what your ranking is, and especially

:28:15. > :28:21.if you are a heavy favourite, which Seppi is, it is normal to get a

:28:22. > :28:25.tight anyway, let alone in the Davis Cup. It is a fun match to watch and

:28:26. > :28:30.we have seen already, he has had three breaks and lost them right

:28:31. > :28:33.away. He is tight right now. It James Ward can somehow win this

:28:34. > :28:39.set, then we have a match on our hands. If Seppi wins this set, I

:28:40. > :28:43.feel he will relax a little bit more and it might be troublesome. But it

:28:44. > :28:45.James Ward can get this set somehow, we might be in for an epic last

:28:46. > :29:02.match. Right, no setting in. No loose

:29:03. > :29:07.stuff, no fancy dan tricks. This is serious stuff, as James Ward

:29:08. > :29:16.restarts, serving to stay in the first set.

:29:17. > :29:23.This is not too different to the restart Andy had on the second day.

:29:24. > :29:26.Right in at the business end of the set. We didn't see Seppi do too well

:29:27. > :29:43.then. . He telegraphed that one on the

:29:44. > :29:49.drop shot. Could see that one coming. Seppi was on to it in a

:29:50. > :30:04.flash. Normally, he is good with the disguise but Seppi got up to it in

:30:05. > :30:09.plenty of time. Oh yes, that is a lovely hit.

:30:10. > :31:25.Especially on the third point after a restart. A sign of confidence.

:31:26. > :31:36.The line judges have been excellent in this tie so far, I would say.

:31:37. > :31:44.Called a fault but Ward will get another go at the first serve.

:31:45. > :32:01.Ward thinks he should have got that point. That is what he is

:32:02. > :32:09.complaining about. Quite possibly. Hard to justify. The call bait out

:32:10. > :32:15.as the ball hit the ground. Wide. Wide.

:32:16. > :32:20.Not by enough -- much but enough and it is set point. Risky play there.

:32:21. > :32:24.That was a typical shot shot to go for, he hit a huge second serve;

:32:25. > :32:31.went for that one and went for another big forehand and didn't get

:32:32. > :32:57.the balance right. 30-30. It has paid off in the past.

:32:58. > :33:06.There was. There were a couple of shots where Wardy could have moved

:33:07. > :33:12.up a bit. Instead of pressing and taking time away from his opponent.

:33:13. > :33:16.He let the Balcombe to him. That gives Seppi time to come back to the

:33:17. > :33:21.point. You sense he was waiting for the miss, during that rally.

:33:22. > :33:26.Exactly. Look how short he is leaving the ball, beyond the service

:33:27. > :33:30.line. That is not a shot Ward will be happy pushing long.

:33:31. > :33:37.Unfortunately from a British point of view Ward lost his serve four

:33:38. > :33:43.times out of five in that first set. And Italy have the lead in the

:33:44. > :33:49.deciding rubber. Now this might be the time now where Seppi might relax

:33:50. > :33:58.a bit and this is a dangerous period coming up here. Ward has to come out

:33:59. > :34:02.and play solid tennis. Needs to, otherwise the tie will be

:34:03. > :34:13.gone. Nothing Murray could do earlier about the form of Fognini.

:34:14. > :34:31.British fans still have hope. Italy are heading towards the

:34:32. > :34:34.semifinals as things stand. The key is to almost forget about

:34:35. > :34:38.that previous set, treat it as a warm up. Say, you February what

:34:39. > :34:42.let's start the match again, with a lot of time to get top story this

:34:43. > :35:06.match still, and start again, start afresh.

:35:07. > :36:42.That was all a bit wild there. Talk about Murray, is he talking to

:36:43. > :36:46.himself, or when Murray, is he just talking to himself? You can't blame

:36:47. > :36:51.him for that, if you had Fognini going nuts at you, you have to

:36:52. > :36:58.mutter a itle bit. I would love to find, is he directing it, trying to

:36:59. > :37:05.put you off on your serve? What is he doing? There is the great one,

:37:06. > :37:14.the great man. What a player he was on clay. In fact he holds the record

:37:15. > :37:16.for being the leading Davis Cup cup player and for having the most

:37:17. > :37:25.whiches as well. -- wins as well. I knew he would be

:37:26. > :37:31.there somewhere. Made 164 rubbers in total. Incredible.

:37:32. > :37:41.78 wins in singles, 48 win, 42 wins in doubles. Celebrated his 80th

:37:42. > :37:52.birthday last September. He was the captain when we lost to Italy.

:37:53. > :37:59.He is looking very confident now. First set was huge.

:38:00. > :38:04.That rain came at a bad time when you think of it. Now it has been

:38:05. > :38:08.proved that way, but Ward had momentum, broke back. Seppi was

:38:09. > :38:11.tight, 20 minutes break or whatever, and came back and now he is up a

:38:12. > :38:41.set, and looking good. Ward ending a sequence of, four,

:38:42. > :38:51.five, six, seven, eight, nine point against him. Close.

:38:52. > :39:03.30-15 in that final game of the first set.

:39:04. > :40:04.Digging in here, he needs to hold this game, desperately.

:40:05. > :40:24.Good effort from Ward there. Needed that game badly. 0-30 down.

:40:25. > :40:28.Keep thinking about his recent big Davis Cup performance, when he was a

:40:29. > :40:33.set down to Sam Querry, in America. He was two sets to one down to us

:40:34. > :40:44.the November last career in Coventry.

:40:45. > :41:15.Came back to one on both occasions. -- Tursanov.

:41:16. > :41:21.It is as if the crowd have lots of of their intensity. They don't feel

:41:22. > :41:28.their man is in trouble and they have not having to get behind him so

:41:29. > :41:29.much as the last match. Every point they were screaming in the last

:41:30. > :41:37.match. Not out of the question but a lot of

:41:38. > :41:43.them maybe felt the tie was over. Looking at the rankings they

:41:44. > :41:48.wouldn't know much about James Ward. They wouldn't be inspecting his cent

:41:49. > :41:52.Davis Cup history. No, that is true. So maybe that could play into

:41:53. > :41:58.Britain's hands f the local cheer squad has lost a couple of its

:41:59. > :42:03.number. -- hands, if.

:42:04. > :43:08.A few spots of rain as row can see on the camera lens there.

:43:09. > :43:14.A steady drizzle at the moment in Naples. The sun is out at the same

:43:15. > :43:25.time. No immediate threat to play, it

:43:26. > :43:30.doesn't seem. Captain Leon Smith trying to stay as

:43:31. > :43:34.calm as possible. Just to reiterate the simple facts he would have

:43:35. > :43:35.dropped into Ward before this match. One or two key points to think

:43:36. > :43:59.about. You can play through the rain on

:44:00. > :44:04.clay court as long as it is not too hard. Remember one of those Nadal

:44:05. > :44:06.Djokovic finals where most of it was played in if rain.

:44:07. > :44:15.Didn't hamper the quality. I don't think anything can in

:44:16. > :44:19.matches between those two. 40 times they have played. Their recent final

:44:20. > :44:21.in Miami. And a victory for Djokovic in that

:44:22. > :45:37.one. He had a good look that the passing

:45:38. > :45:41.shot. Does tend to make more mistakes on the forehand side, on

:45:42. > :45:45.big point, that is where you need to go to. You could have a choice of

:45:46. > :46:10.the two. These errors are definitely

:46:11. > :46:29.welcomed. You can see with Seppi, the

:46:30. > :46:33.difference of when he played against Murray, Murray had to work very hard

:46:34. > :46:38.to break him down, they were very long rallies and he's throwing in a

:46:39. > :46:41.lot of these sort of unforced errors on the third or four shot for no

:46:42. > :46:47.reason. That is all to do with the fifth rubber. That is what it can do

:46:48. > :46:52.for you, if James Ward can hold it close, and hold his serve twice now.

:46:53. > :47:00.He is still not out of this. A long way to go.

:47:01. > :47:09.I don't think he is moving his feet, Seppi.

:47:10. > :47:15.It is interesting, his serve and the follow up shot. We talked earlier,

:47:16. > :47:20.the footwork is the first to go when they are nervous. He looks shackled

:47:21. > :47:26.by fear. Just the impression. That last point. He is up a set too. That

:47:27. > :47:31.is what is so... I thought once he got the first set he would relax. It

:47:32. > :47:32.looked like he was after the first game but since then he has been

:47:33. > :48:00.shaky again. It is possible he is making the aim

:48:01. > :48:04.aion -- same assumption, maybe he thinks if I hang in there James Ward

:48:05. > :48:09.will give it to me. In the first set he kind of did. Now he is starting

:48:10. > :48:12.to get a few more balls in, and there, those cheap errors aren't

:48:13. > :48:17.coming as often as he would like and he is thinks "Hold on a second, am I

:48:18. > :49:01.going to need to do more here? " In comparison to first matches, it

:49:02. > :49:05.is a bit hit and miss that match. Come on, Dom, it is not very good.

:49:06. > :49:10.Itself is the first match of the weekend. The quality has been

:49:11. > :49:21.exceptional, until now. -- it's the first match of the

:49:22. > :49:25.weekend. No less dramatic. We often see that,

:49:26. > :49:31.it is about getting over the finishing line. If you have to win

:49:32. > :49:32.ugly you win ugly, you take the fifth rubber anywhere you can get

:49:33. > :49:54.it. We have already had the main course

:49:55. > :50:00.todayer for the tennis. -- today, for the tennis, this is still a

:50:01. > :50:22.tasty dessert, just because of the importance of it.

:50:23. > :50:32.A long way to go in this one as John says. An hour by hind on the score

:50:33. > :50:36.board, but I think in Ward can up his level to the standard we know he

:50:37. > :50:41.can play, there is every chance. Ward hit a good return. Nice and

:50:42. > :50:46.deep. If he can do more, like that, just by taking the ball earlier,

:50:47. > :50:53.think, instead of having to hit a great shot from behind the base, he

:50:54. > :50:54.can hit an average one from inside. We know Seppi doesn't like to be

:50:55. > :51:30.rushed. Oh goodness. What is he complaining

:51:31. > :51:40.about? Break point down, a lotly let call.

:51:41. > :51:45.He should be grateful for it. The way he is playing he will need all

:51:46. > :51:48.the luck he can get to get this done.

:51:49. > :52:36.Apologises. Doesn't mean it and on we go.

:52:37. > :52:46.He has done well there Seppi, because Ward played a good rally.

:52:47. > :52:52.Mixing it up, using the slices. Might be the best rally we have had

:52:53. > :52:56.actually. Good variation from both players, that forehand, that just

:52:57. > :53:52.heavy enough and wide enough to get Ward out of position. Couldn't deal

:53:53. > :53:56.with it. He played well there Seppi, to close

:53:57. > :53:57.that game out. Just one or two signs that the quality might be starting

:53:58. > :54:08.to rise. Not easy that. It is a very

:54:09. > :54:13.effective shot against James Ward, the drop shot. Because as we have

:54:14. > :54:17.been talking about, he stands a long way behind base, he is not the quick

:54:18. > :54:22.foeser the first three steps moving forward. If you can hit a half

:54:23. > :54:24.decent one, if Ward got this, he did get it back, but he has almost no

:54:25. > :54:57.chance of doing much with that. I don't think you are too chuffed by

:54:58. > :55:01.the choice there, your tennis team is behind ayour football team is

:55:02. > :55:07.taking the a battering at the moment. Yes, less than happy to be

:55:08. > :55:16.honest! What is it, 3-0 Everton? I think so.

:55:17. > :55:19.Commentary later. The boat race on BBC One as well.

:55:20. > :55:23.Loads of great live sport for you ahead, don't forget you can follow

:55:24. > :55:29.everything on on the BBC sport website or on the move through the

:55:30. > :55:35.BBC sport app. Get that if you haven't downloaded it.

:55:36. > :56:56.Remarkable. Five service holds. Very risky shot there.

:56:57. > :57:01.Generally speaking, John, for young players listening, when is the best

:57:02. > :57:05.time to drop shot. When is it most effective. You want to be if you

:57:06. > :57:10.can, right on the baseline, or maybe even before that and your opponent

:57:11. > :57:23.is a foot or so, or past that, behind the baseline, that is the

:57:24. > :57:27.best time. You get into patterns where players

:57:28. > :57:31.hang deep. You get the patterns of where Tay like to move. You can get

:57:32. > :57:36.in with a quick one crosscourt, a short drop shot where you hit it

:57:37. > :57:39.firm and short and quick and they are almost no chance and you put

:57:40. > :57:44.yourself in a winning position with that shot. It is a shot that has

:57:45. > :57:47.come back in fashion in the last ten year, it went out of fashion for a

:57:48. > :58:01.while. Oh well played James Ward. He has

:58:02. > :58:09.played three stunning shots there Seppi did well to get to that and

:58:10. > :58:11.hit a resent reply. James Ward's backhand is exceptional.

:58:12. > :58:16.Talking quickly about the drop shot. It has come back in to fashion in

:58:17. > :58:20.the last ten years since the power of the play that plays have got to

:58:21. > :58:26.find a different way to win point, to get people off the baseline. For

:58:27. > :58:32.a while there it wasn't being used. It is just another part of the

:58:33. > :59:00.variety that you have in your game these days.

:59:01. > :59:36.Ward doing well to get this game back to deuce.

:59:37. > :59:57.He has given away a cheap point. You let your opponent off the hook.

:59:58. > :00:00.That is a bad mistake on his favourite side. No real pressure on

:00:01. > :00:14.that shot, just skies it long. Somebody so experienced, such a big

:00:15. > :00:17.point like that, you wouldn't expect an error. It is good to see James

:00:18. > :01:31.Ward getting fired. The shot was there, it was the right

:01:32. > :01:42.shot, had the opening, didn't convert.

:01:43. > :01:48.Well recovered, Seppi, but James Ward probably should have finished

:01:49. > :01:58.him off. And the first break of set to go is to Italy. -- set two goes

:01:59. > :02:02.to Italy. He certainly guessed the right way, he ran one way because he

:02:03. > :02:05.knew he wouldn't have time to get to it and he guessed right. James with

:02:06. > :02:17.a pretty good passing shot. Just the one defeat on Leon Smith's

:02:18. > :02:26.captaincy record, that was to Belgium. And this man, the Italian

:02:27. > :03:34.captain, so much success with the Fed Cup team in recent years.

:03:35. > :04:02.Well, Seppi finally consolidates behind the break of serve at the

:04:03. > :04:07.fourth attempt in this match. And he does it all to comfortably. He moves

:04:08. > :04:13.to within one game of the second set. I just feel like James Ward at

:04:14. > :04:18.the moment, the last few games, there is a little bit of panic in

:04:19. > :04:21.the way he is playing and he is not constructing the points. The ball

:04:22. > :04:26.comes and he is just belting it and it is either going in... There is

:04:27. > :04:32.not much thought pattern going on, that is a sign of inexperience, just

:04:33. > :04:36.panicking a bit and not getting into it. You have to go for the ball but

:04:37. > :04:41.do it when the odds are in your favour and a few times here, he is

:04:42. > :04:45.taking unnecessary risks. It is going to quickly, there is a little

:04:46. > :05:01.bit of panic, I think. -- it is going to o quickly. I agree, he

:05:02. > :05:08.can't seem to build consistent pressure. In games, a couple of

:05:09. > :05:12.points are great, they're not so good. It sends a message to your

:05:13. > :05:15.opponent, doesn't it? If you are slapping at the ball, almost like

:05:16. > :05:22.you are thinking of the game when you lost your serve. And Seppi will

:05:23. > :05:31.be thinking, I don't have to do too much, I have to just play solid. He

:05:32. > :05:36.is thinking about and James Ward should not, might not be able to

:05:37. > :05:39.take advantage of that. But it is difficult to get confidence when you

:05:40. > :05:41.know you have taken two good shots and then suddenly two bad ones. You

:05:42. > :06:22.can't build confidence. That is a little bit of what I mean.

:06:23. > :06:25.He came out and hit a beautiful forehand down the line and then

:06:26. > :06:41.misses a simple backhand by a long way. Just can't string it together.

:06:42. > :08:52.One net cord apiece in the game. James Ward racing up the court to

:08:53. > :08:58.get that and then all too easy for Seppi.

:08:59. > :09:09.The chairman Philip Brooke in the background there in the blue shirt

:09:10. > :09:13.and shades. Possibly dreaming about hosting a semifinal under the roof

:09:14. > :09:14.of Centre Court. That would be spectacular. But we are a long way

:09:15. > :09:32.from that at the moment. That will keep the set alive. Make

:09:33. > :09:47.Seppi work for it, at least. Nice play.

:09:48. > :09:55.He had the chance to serve for the first set, Seppi, he couldn't do it

:09:56. > :11:16.at 5-3. He needed James Ward to help him out.

:11:17. > :11:22.Well, both players have struggled on serve all afternoon, but Seppi

:11:23. > :11:32.hoping for a second successive love service hold.

:11:33. > :11:47.And there it is. Huge task now for Great Britain. James Ward, lowly

:11:48. > :11:54.ranked, has to come from 2-0 down to win this tie. Has two still keep

:11:55. > :12:03.believing, though. As do. And Captain Smith has defined the words

:12:04. > :12:07.to make the difference. But a good job from Seppi, even though it has

:12:08. > :12:24.been scrappy and nowhere near the quality of earlier.

:12:25. > :12:32.This is for the right to play in the semifinals of the Davis Cup, which,

:12:33. > :12:35.fit Italy, would be quite an achievement. They won the Davis Cup

:12:36. > :12:41.back in 1976, runners-up on six further occasions. And here are the

:12:42. > :12:46.scores at the quarterfinal stage, at the top of your screen. The Czech

:12:47. > :12:49.Republic through, a fine recent record in this competition and even

:12:50. > :12:53.without a Tomas Berdych, they got the job done in Japan with no

:12:54. > :12:59.problems at all. You can see all the scores from across the weekend

:13:00. > :13:06.flicking by. You can see Radek Stepanek and Lukas Rosol, the men on

:13:07. > :13:18.duty, while the tie was alive. Jan Vasiliki is a very talented young

:13:19. > :13:23.player -- Vesely. France and Germany is interesting. That defeat for

:13:24. > :13:28.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on the first day was a big blow for France but the

:13:29. > :13:34.tie is level at 2-2 overall at the moment. Gael Monfils is a set to the

:13:35. > :13:39.good in the deciding rubber. As for Switzerland and Kazakhstan, what a

:13:40. > :13:45.tie it has been out in Geneva. 2-1 to Kazakhstan as things stand. Stan

:13:46. > :13:50.Wawrinka is leading Mikhail Kukushkin 2-1, from a set down,

:13:51. > :13:53.going with serve in the fourth set at the moment. So it looks like

:13:54. > :13:58.Roger Federer will be needed after that surprise defeat in the doubles

:13:59. > :14:03.yesterday. Federer will be needed to come in and salvage things for

:14:04. > :14:09.Switzerland. As the number two player. Correct. That can't have

:14:10. > :14:12.happened before. Know, can you imagine that? We have this player at

:14:13. > :15:10.number two, he is not bad, to close out the match...

:15:11. > :15:18.I think Federer, looking at his Davis Cup record, you have to go

:15:19. > :15:22.back to his debut in 1999, went Switzerland beat Italy, for the last

:15:23. > :16:06.time Federer would have come in at number two player.

:16:07. > :16:12.That -- in those days, it was a very different Roger Federer, learning

:16:13. > :16:17.his trade in Basel. I remember the Tory of him -- story of him throwing

:16:18. > :16:24.his racket into the curtain that divided the court there.

:16:25. > :16:31.It absolutely ripped the curtains into and he was forced to clean the

:16:32. > :16:40.toilets for a week. He remembers that. -- in two. He calmed down

:16:41. > :19:00.after that. No kidding! It was the thought of cleaning more toilets.

:19:01. > :19:05.Seppi missing a few shots that he probably wouldn't want to, but he

:19:06. > :19:06.knows that if he gets his break, he's effectively killing of the

:19:07. > :19:35.match. -- killing off. It is one of those rallies from

:19:36. > :19:39.James Ward, he hits the ball really firm and hard, but a lot of times,

:19:40. > :19:42.that direction, it is towards the middle of the baseline where Seppi

:19:43. > :19:48.can get the angles and get him off the court. James hasn't been doing

:19:49. > :19:53.enough that, where he can get his opponent off and then get the angle

:19:54. > :19:55.and for the big shot. Just blasting it but there is no purpose in it,

:19:56. > :20:09.really. What a serve. That was as big as his

:20:10. > :20:51.first, almost. Brilliant serve. If that was in, it is another huge

:20:52. > :21:01.serve. Caught the line. Going for broke, that is the shore. Good on

:21:02. > :21:22.him. -- that is for sure. He knows he has to take every risk possible.

:21:23. > :21:54.Didn't catch Seppi by surprise there.

:21:55. > :21:59.That was better with that forehand, opened up the court and then got the

:22:00. > :22:08.chance to build the backhand crosscourt and created the error.

:22:09. > :22:16.Pace is not enough these days. You have to get angles.

:22:17. > :22:23.Well done, very well done. Some big serving. Trying to get the crowd

:22:24. > :22:28.behind him. I don't know if he should have done that, to be honest.

:22:29. > :22:34.He will get the Italian crowd more on his back. But I suppose, if that

:22:35. > :22:40.is what he enjoys, but they are going to react to it. Ward doesn't

:22:41. > :22:44.strike me too much is the kind of guy who is going to care about the

:22:45. > :22:48.Italian crowd. He just needs to get some energy, something to change

:22:49. > :22:52.something and give him credit, he is trying to get himself motivated, get

:22:53. > :22:56.the crowd motivated, may be rattled Seppi a little bit with that hold

:22:57. > :23:02.after having many break points down. It could help him change the tie a

:23:03. > :23:15.little bit. It will be important to string a few points together and be

:23:16. > :23:17.solid in this next game. " Seve is a choker -- Seppi is a choker" they

:23:18. > :23:51.are singing. Charming! He missed that, but I like what he

:23:52. > :24:22.was trying to do with that forehand, at least.

:24:23. > :24:31.I thought he was going to get past after this approach shot, that ball

:24:32. > :24:33.just shot off. He likes those volleys at that height, that is

:24:34. > :25:01.lovely. That is a sitting duck. Seppi through it a bit too early and

:25:02. > :25:15.the Ark of the ball was always going to take it wide. -- the arc.

:25:16. > :25:25.If there is going to be enters British comeback, no better than

:25:26. > :26:03.now. So close. -- a momentous British comeback.

:26:04. > :26:09.He played the point well up until that point. I like the attack, I

:26:10. > :26:19.think he should be going short and low because he doesn't have those

:26:20. > :26:23.kind of flick shots. You are living it, Dom. When you are part of this

:26:24. > :26:25.team, you were a team-mate of Ward, just a couple of weeks ago. Must be

:26:26. > :26:43.hard for you to watch. It just feels like he is really not

:26:44. > :26:48.that far off being right back into this match. It just takes one or two

:26:49. > :27:26.shots, one or two points, and suddenly, this match could change.

:27:27. > :27:33.The momentum yesterday, we probably talk about momentum shifts in the

:27:34. > :27:37.sport more than any other, it is one on one and when one person just has

:27:38. > :27:40.something to cling to to give them hope, then it has a residual effect

:27:41. > :27:53.on the opponent. We saw it on the doubles yesterday,

:27:54. > :27:57.I thought the Brits were dominating the Italians, absolutely dominating,

:27:58. > :28:01.and it only took a little blip and suddenly, the Italians were right

:28:02. > :28:04.back in it. And here, I don't think Seppi is dominating as much as the

:28:05. > :28:06.British were yesterday in the doubles. It might just take one

:28:07. > :28:23.game. When you are down there on the

:28:24. > :28:26.bench, are you saying all of this stuff to Andy Murray as well? Are

:28:27. > :28:29.you having these conversations which are or are you a little scared to

:28:30. > :28:44.say anything, because you are so close?

:28:45. > :28:53.Jimmy and saying it to him while he is on the bench about James Ward? --

:28:54. > :29:01.do you mean. Like the conversation we are having now. Yes, I remember

:29:02. > :29:04.when James Ward was playing against Sam Querrey, I was saying to

:29:05. > :29:09.Fleming, who was sitting right next to me, Sam Querrey is constantly

:29:10. > :29:17.going wide, he just needs to chip it and get himself back in the point.

:29:18. > :29:25.Oh, dear, oh, dear. Fleming was saying the same thing and he

:29:26. > :29:31.eventually started doing it and that is how he started getting into the

:29:32. > :29:38.games. It is going to be tough from 2-0 down. Tougher still from two

:29:39. > :29:43.sets and a break. He just hasn't been able to get the balance right

:29:44. > :29:50.of attacking and not making too many errors. He has made so many errors

:29:51. > :29:53.today. Obviously, he had to be aggressive to a certain amount. If

:29:54. > :30:00.you let Seppi run him around, this match would be over already, but you

:30:01. > :30:04.have got to get the balance right, otherwise the errors just keep

:30:05. > :30:09.mounting up. At the moment, it is a couple of cheap ones almost every

:30:10. > :30:15.game. It is haar to build a momentum if

:30:16. > :30:35.you can't pick up the speed. He is stuttering.

:30:36. > :30:42.It looks as if we may be able to complete the action without further

:30:43. > :30:47.rain interruption. No. It is only small We could do with a rain

:30:48. > :30:54.interruption right now, for, forwardy.

:30:55. > :30:58.It -- for Wardy. The longer Seppi has to think about things the better

:30:59. > :31:02.chance you have of him choking, has the British supporter said a couple

:31:03. > :31:08.of games ago. He knows him too well! Worth noting

:31:09. > :31:15.that we will be transferring to the red button, in the not too distant

:31:16. > :32:34.future, so, find that remote again. This time the dog's got it!

:32:35. > :32:40.Since Ward lost his serve midway through the second set, Seppi has

:32:41. > :32:54.cruised through his service games. It was not that way early on.

:32:55. > :32:59.That first set was to crucial. Thought that before the match, if he

:33:00. > :33:09.got ahead, won that first set he would Saturday to relax, Seppi, and

:33:10. > :33:14.Ward, he needed that bad di. If he had got that are first set, he was

:33:15. > :33:17.on a hiding to nothing, and does tend to get nervous, that would have

:33:18. > :35:36.been, that would have been rough for him.

:35:37. > :35:43.He has done that well, today, hasn't he. We have to give him a bit of

:35:44. > :35:49.credit. This has not been easy I to. Coll into this situation, he might

:35:50. > :35:53.be experienced and at times he's has looked decidedly shaky but he still

:35:54. > :35:56.has to get the job done, he has probably played his best stuff in

:35:57. > :36:01.this third set. There is a lot of pressure going into this match for

:36:02. > :36:06.both player, more from him because he is expected to win. The press

:36:07. > :36:16.would give him a lot of stick in Italy if he lost this match, that is

:36:17. > :36:38.for sure. Two breaks.

:36:39. > :36:46.Things looked promising for Great Britain yesterday, 2-1 in the tie.

:36:47. > :36:49.Andy Murray carried the hopes today, but Fabio Fognini was too good.

:36:50. > :36:53.Playing scintillating tennis to take it all the way to this decider and

:36:54. > :36:56.this man Andreas Seppi, at the moment he is doing the business for

:36:57. > :37:02.the home side. They are on their way to the semifinals, it seems, leading

:37:03. > :37:06.the deciding rubber 2-0 with two breaks in the third.

:37:07. > :37:11.We have to leave the match now, here on BBC One, as we move over to the

:37:12. > :37:15.red button to make way for Songs of Praise, so, if you want to follow

:37:16. > :37:21.what may be the concollusion in this game, go to the red button now and

:37:22. > :37:27.if James Ward stays a magnificent come back we will be back on BBC

:37:28. > :37:31.Two, at 4.30 this afternoon. So that is in about 35 minutes time. But it

:37:32. > :37:36.does seem that we are not that far away now from bigging is bracings

:37:37. > :37:40.for Italian tennis, as they move towards their first Davis Cup

:37:41. > :37:43.semifinal, since 1998. They have only ever one it once, we were

:37:44. > :37:50.hoping that history would be made for Britain. It doesn't look like

:37:51. > :37:55.that way, it looks as Davis Cup hopes have seen napele and perished.

:37:56. > :37:58.-- Naples and perished.
