:00:38. > :00:47.The defence of the Davis Cup for Britain, British No 1 Andy Murray
:00:48. > :00:53.against Taro Daniel. The first set to Great Britain. That is all Daniel
:00:54. > :01:05.needs. The second set has followed the first and closes it out in some
:01:06. > :01:14.style. One up... And eventually the set does go to Nishikori. It is 1-1
:01:15. > :01:20.at the end of day one. So it is honours even after day one of this
:01:21. > :01:25.Davis Cup first round match against Japan as Britain begins the defence
:01:26. > :01:35.of the trophy they won for the first time in 79 years against Belgium in
:01:36. > :01:41.November. Day two sees the doubles take stage and the captain gets to
:01:42. > :01:53.deploy his brothers in arms. Pivotal doubles. # Hey brother, there is a
:01:54. > :02:06.analyst for to rediscover # Hey, sister, know the water is sweet...
:02:07. > :02:19.The Murrays win 2-1, Great Britain. The winning blow by Jamie Murray.
:02:20. > :02:27.The Murrays have won and inch Great Britain closer. Talking to so many
:02:28. > :02:34.of the fans, they all wanted to see the Murray brothers in action, well
:02:35. > :02:39.they have their wish. It is a sell-out in Birmingham. 9,000 people
:02:40. > :02:46.packed in to cheer them on. Let's look at what happened yesterday.
:02:47. > :03:01.Confirmation of the results with both No 1s winning in straight sets.
:03:02. > :03:13.Kei Nishikori is not playing in the doubles, that is the big news. And
:03:14. > :03:20.here they come. And what a moment it is for the Japanese team,
:03:21. > :03:27.particularly Yoshihito Nishioka, who made his Davis Cup debut against
:03:28. > :03:33.Columbia last year. He is just 20, good singles player and he is a
:03:34. > :03:36.left-hander alongside Yasutaka Uchiyama, who will playing. We have
:03:37. > :03:42.seen him in the doubles and he looked to be very talented. We are
:03:43. > :03:47.wondering if they're a match for these two, Andy and Jamie Murray,
:03:48. > :04:05.two of the best doubles players in the world. The players, Yoshihito
:04:06. > :04:20.Nishioka. Yasutaka Uchiyama. Taro Daniel. And Kei Nishikori. And the
:04:21. > :04:31.team from the defending champions Great Britain, captain, Leon Smith.
:04:32. > :04:53.The players, Dom Inglot. Jamie Murray. Dan Evan. Andy Murray.
:04:54. > :05:03.Ladies and gentlemen please welcome the teams from Japan and Great
:05:04. > :05:09.Britain. You can probably tell by the big cheer from the crowd for
:05:10. > :05:15.Andy Murray how pleased they are that he has been chosen. With no
:05:16. > :05:19.disrespect to Dom Inglot, but for Leon Smith, if Andy says I want to
:05:20. > :05:27.play, you must pick him. Andy's boss. Everyone's delighted. As
:05:28. > :05:34.impartial commentators we have to remain that way in some ways, but we
:05:35. > :05:39.want GB to win. The kid who is about to do the ball toss and so many
:05:40. > :05:45.other people you talk, they're so inspired by Andy Murray. I have to
:05:46. > :05:50.say I'm a part of that club myself, alongside Jamie, they have elevated
:05:51. > :05:59.tennis in this count are I to levels we haven't seen in tens of years.
:06:00. > :06:04.The big surprise of course is that Kei Nishikori is not on the other
:06:05. > :06:09.side. Also as far as Andy is concerned, you know he is a
:06:10. > :06:14.competitor and he doesn't want to be sitting on the bench. He wants to
:06:15. > :06:20.play and also when we have this break of five weeks and he had an
:06:21. > :06:27.easy singles match, he had plenty left in the tank. There is Ethan. I
:06:28. > :06:32.met him earlier with his dad. And oh that will make his day, shaking
:06:33. > :06:35.hands with the Murray brothers. He has been practicing all morning the
:06:36. > :06:40.coin toss. He said he will do it well. I told him to be nice and
:06:41. > :06:48.patient. He is the boss when he is out. He has a presence. Rutherglen
:06:49. > :06:54.lawn tennis club. This is Ethan's big moment. That is a picture he
:06:55. > :06:58.will treasure. He is from Glasgow and a huge moment for these two as
:06:59. > :07:02.well. We expected Kei Nishikori to play for them to have a chance of
:07:03. > :07:07.success in this doubles match. But it is the more inexperienced team
:07:08. > :07:09.and the captain for the Japanese team will wonder how they can hurt
:07:10. > :07:26.the Murrays. No question about that. To me, Kei Nishikori did not want to
:07:27. > :07:29.play in the doubles. If he had wanted to play, he would have
:07:30. > :07:35.played. He decided that his best bet was to be fresh to play Andy Murray
:07:36. > :07:43.in the singles. This is almost a throwaway match. It is a combined
:07:44. > :07:49.ranking of Japanese team of 700. So it will be one-way traffic. They
:07:50. > :07:55.have decided to put all their eggs in the basket of the two single
:07:56. > :07:59.players. If Kei Nishikori says he does not want to play, what can the
:08:00. > :08:05.captain do. There is nothing the captain can do. The top man controls
:08:06. > :08:10.what is happening. The captain is secondary. I think it is a donation
:08:11. > :08:14.from the Japanese and I'm surprised by it. Because Kei Nishikori can
:08:15. > :08:17.play the game. He is No 6 in the world. He wouldn't have been
:08:18. > :08:22.overtaxed by that performance against Dan Evans. It is a dangerous
:08:23. > :08:28.match. The tie. Everyone is thinking u because we have been used to see
:08:29. > :08:33.Britain winning, both watches tomorrow will be demanding. Kei
:08:34. > :08:40.Nishikori can undoubtedly beat Andy Murray, although he doesn't match up
:08:41. > :08:47.well, Andy has been away, we can't take it for granted. We can take
:08:48. > :08:53.this one for granted. But tomorrow will seal the deal. It could go down
:08:54. > :08:59.to the last match. Both have won a fifth match in a Davis Cup. Yes
:09:00. > :09:04.they're both experienced and they have been there and done it. That is
:09:05. > :09:08.the hardest thing is to win the fifth rubber in the Davis Cup. And
:09:09. > :09:14.both have done it. To me, #i79 was risky what they have done. And Kei
:09:15. > :09:17.Nishikori had played in the doubles, the British team would still have
:09:18. > :09:23.been favourites, but it would have been closer. Now unless there is a
:09:24. > :09:34.major upset, we will be 2-1 up and the pressure will be on the
:09:35. > :09:42.Japanese. Jamie had an outstanding 2015. He made two Grand Slam finals
:09:43. > :09:51.with his partner John Pierce. So everyone was surprised when he
:09:52. > :09:57.dropped Peers. Let's hear what he had to say earlier. Now you have had
:09:58. > :10:03.time to think about it, what are your memories of last year? It was
:10:04. > :10:09.an incredible journey throughout the whole year. Played four incredible
:10:10. > :10:14.ties. Three at home, which were never forget the atmospheres that
:10:15. > :10:21.was created by the fans that came to watch. The intensity of some of the
:10:22. > :10:24.matches. And yes, to come out of it having won the Davis Cup was
:10:25. > :10:31.special. And something we will remember for the rest of our lives.
:10:32. > :10:34.You have had a remarkable couple of months, Australian Open champion,
:10:35. > :10:40.you look as if you take them in your stride. But do you feel different,
:10:41. > :10:45.has life changed? No, I loved playing the matches, the doubles was
:10:46. > :10:53.an important rubber for our team and we got four amazing matches and you
:10:54. > :10:58.know I was able to translate the experiences into my tennis on the
:10:59. > :11:03.main tour and it gave me a lot of trust in myself and my game. I think
:11:04. > :11:08.that helped in some of the bigger events and you know I know it helped
:11:09. > :11:14.in the latter stages in Australia. You were here in 2002 for the Great
:11:15. > :11:19.Britain against Sweden tie, playing in the junior competition. Not
:11:20. > :11:23.competition, it was just kind of practice, well practice matches we
:11:24. > :11:26.played against Sweden. We played them in the morning and came to
:11:27. > :11:33.watch in the afternoon. I remember we were like right up the top here
:11:34. > :11:38.watching and it was such a great tie, it was so noisy, I remember it
:11:39. > :11:43.here and it was real kind of inspiring to kind of be a part of
:11:44. > :11:48.that and see Tim and Greg going up against the best in the world and
:11:49. > :11:56.have so many fans here cheering for you. That was a strong memory for
:11:57. > :12:00.me. He now thrives in that atmosphere. It shoeps in those
:12:01. > :12:07.crucial matches last year. Look at his journey in the last few years,
:12:08. > :12:13.going up the rankings. It is incredible Andy and Jamie both world
:12:14. > :12:17.No 2s. It is an extraordinary story and what sport can do and I remember
:12:18. > :12:23.that time in 2002 that he was inspired by and he would go and use
:12:24. > :12:29.that as motivation and make his debut in 2007. We have to make the
:12:30. > :12:33.most of this now. There are people here today who and if we are still
:12:34. > :12:38.around in 15 years time, might be playing in a tie and because they
:12:39. > :12:43.were inspired by this. I think the whole thing is great. You talked
:12:44. > :12:47.about the atmosphere and it seems to be getting better. The fans play
:12:48. > :12:51.their part and Leon Smith the captain said I want you to be louder
:12:52. > :12:55.tomorrow, because he wants to get this, he knows the doubles is
:12:56. > :13:00.crucial to give you that cushion going into the final day. Yes and
:13:01. > :13:06.when you're playing an inexperienced team. This type of noise is amazing.
:13:07. > :13:10.But they were in Columbia last year and got through that. They lost the
:13:11. > :13:14.doubles, but they were there. This crowd is amazing. In Scotland, they
:13:15. > :13:19.have been fantastic the last couple of years. Now Birmingham have come
:13:20. > :13:26.in. And they're doing as well. It is an amazing atmosphere. We have been
:13:27. > :13:31.talking about Jamie Murray. Here is another Jamie, Jamie Baker is
:13:32. > :13:36.courtside. The crowd were listening to you, they have started banging
:13:37. > :13:42.the drum. I can hardly hear myself think. They will play a massive
:13:43. > :13:47.part. Saturday is normally the loudest day, a lot of kids here,
:13:48. > :13:54.they don't have to be at school and this crowd here they're only a few
:13:55. > :14:00.miles from where Andy and Jamie grew up in Dunblane. I had a long chat
:14:01. > :14:04.with them and they had their tactics ready for Kei Nishikori and everyone
:14:05. > :14:09.I was surprised he is not there. But what about the British team? A
:14:10. > :14:13.factor of their matches with France and Australia, they were slow out of
:14:14. > :14:18.the blocks, feeling their way into the partnership and came out with
:14:19. > :14:24.some unbelievable wins in the end. I think today if the only chance the
:14:25. > :14:31.Japanese players have is if the Murrays start slowly. But they have
:14:32. > :14:35.an inexperienced team. So on paper, GB are favourites, but this is Davis
:14:36. > :14:41.Cup. You never know what is going to happen. Point well made. Of course,
:14:42. > :14:49.they have got to start well. They have got to do that. As far as the
:14:50. > :14:53.Murray brothers are concerned, both jouft standing -- outstanding
:14:54. > :15:02.brothers. And they chart even and they noticed with Jamie, you needed
:15:03. > :15:07.a partner that returned better and he went with Bruno Suarez. He said
:15:08. > :15:11.don't take them for granted. We were watching him. His technique at the
:15:12. > :15:15.net was superb and he looked good. That is a different thing when you
:15:16. > :15:19.have Jamie Murray three feet in front of you. He has the best hands
:15:20. > :15:24.now in doubles in the game. No doubt about it. These quickest at the net.
:15:25. > :15:29.When you have a return of serve like Andy Murray, who probably the best
:15:30. > :15:37.returner in the game with Djokovic, it is a very good combination. It is
:15:38. > :15:44.an awesome combination that we have got now. I wonder whether the Murray
:15:45. > :15:50.brothers will target the 20-year-old. We are ready and time
:15:51. > :15:57.to hand over to Andy. COMMENTATOR: Take your time with the stairs old
:15:58. > :16:27.boy. And Andy Murray to open up in front of 9,000 people in Birmingham.
:16:28. > :16:34.Getting the ace count up. Andy Murray, whose Davis Cup record is
:16:35. > :17:04.extraordinary. 28 matches won in singles and just two lost.
:17:05. > :17:16.So he has never lost a singles match on any surface away from clay. And
:17:17. > :17:19.he has never lost at home. It is a nice doubles partnership as well
:17:20. > :17:59.these two. What a run they had to the title last year.
:18:00. > :18:12.There is Louis, who is a doubles the specialist and for those with longer
:18:13. > :18:17.memories, he coached colonel. Connell. And he was a doubles
:18:18. > :18:42.specialist coach when there was no others.
:18:43. > :18:53.And who else he used to coach was a guy called Pat Galbraith, another
:18:54. > :18:54.left-hander, who went to world No 1 when they were developing at that
:18:55. > :19:16.time. Excellent start from the Japanese
:19:17. > :19:18.pairing. Taro Daniel didn't let Andy Murray, he saw Andy Murray disappear
:19:19. > :21:10.yesterday into the distance quickly. Wasn't the cleanest hit there! A
:21:11. > :21:15.good hold overall. He looked comfortable on his serve. The miss
:21:16. > :22:20.was a complete mishit. But he got away with it.
:22:21. > :22:28.That is a decent serve at 98mph and into the body. He has actually
:22:29. > :22:32.improved that, Jamie Murray in the last season. His second serve was
:22:33. > :22:36.very vulnerable and he has definitely got more juice on it than
:22:37. > :22:42.he used to have. But this court is very slow and if he doesn't get a
:22:43. > :22:45.high percentage of first serves in, the Japanese will fancy their
:22:46. > :22:57.chances to get some good returns back.
:22:58. > :23:07.The younger man on the Japanese team is Nishioka, the left-hander, 20
:23:08. > :23:32.years of age. He played the Columbian team. A
:23:33. > :23:37.decent team. Behind Kei Nishikori, the Japanese managed to stay in the
:23:38. > :23:38.world crowd with a victory away on clay against Columbia. So they're a
:23:39. > :24:22.good unit. So eight minutes played in this
:24:23. > :24:28.Davis Cup doubles. 1-1 after day one and day two doubles pivotal. I
:24:29. > :24:31.remember being back here in 2002 and Judy Murray drove down from Scotland
:24:32. > :24:37.in a minibus with Andy Murray and Jamie and so many others to watch
:24:38. > :24:43.the tennis and one wonders who is in this crowd of a young age playing
:24:44. > :24:47.now who will be inspired. Very happy to hear from you, who inspired you
:24:48. > :24:54.when you were young to take up sports? Most of the kids I have
:24:55. > :24:58.spoken to, and they're big kids from Stirling University and the big kids
:24:59. > :25:05.playing tennis, who are in here, they would point right at Andy
:25:06. > :25:14.Murray and say, yes, him. Let us know on Twitter. We have a Facebook
:25:15. > :25:22.page and the web-site. Who was your first hero John? I used to go to
:25:23. > :25:28.Wimbledon with my dad and you could walk around, the Aussies were my
:25:29. > :25:36.heroes. Serve and volley. Don't do that any more. Rod Laver of course.
:25:37. > :25:58.When I first saw Jimmy Connors play I was amazed with that steel racket.
:25:59. > :26:05.Watching them practice, He does tend to serve and stay back. It is a
:26:06. > :26:09.tactic a lot of doubles players use. But I'm not sure it is going to be
:26:10. > :26:17.successful when Jamie Murray and Andy Murray are going to be climbing
:26:18. > :26:32.in to the net. To keep passing them a big ask over five sets.
:26:33. > :26:42.It is going to take a couple of games to get the radar in and feel
:26:43. > :26:44.the ball off the court surface. You don't know whether it will slice
:26:45. > :27:08.into the body or kick. He won't thank us for showing this
:27:09. > :27:36.in isolation! Very poor volley. Nishioka the weaker of the two on
:27:37. > :27:39.the volley, the left-hander. He tends to back swing a bit big, that
:27:40. > :28:36.will get caught out. No, that is what John Lloyd was
:28:37. > :28:44.talking about. You give the net away to people who can't volley is one
:28:45. > :28:53.thing, but by staying the back, you give the net away to the Murrays,
:28:54. > :28:55.there is no future. He has the big back swing and tends to serve and
:28:56. > :29:15.stay back. The big man Yasutaka Uchiyama, 23,
:29:16. > :29:20.317th in doubles, I'm surprised it is not higher than that. He is from
:29:21. > :29:41.the the northern most island in Japan.
:29:42. > :29:48.I'm surprised he didn't go for this one. If the ball goes in the air,
:29:49. > :30:04.there is the advantage if you can take it out of the air.
:30:05. > :30:20.Very nice. He is good another the net Yasutaka Uchiyama. I don't why
:30:21. > :30:23.Yoshihito Nishioka is playing. With Kei Nishikori they beat some top
:30:24. > :30:44.players. Why wouldn't you play? There is no way that Nishikori said
:30:45. > :30:52.he would play and the captain didn't pick him. It must have come from the
:30:53. > :30:53.Japanese number one. Maybe he is confident of beating Andy Murray in
:30:54. > :31:45.the singles, I suppose. Andy Murray will be hoping that he
:31:46. > :31:49.continues his high percentage of first serves as he did in his
:31:50. > :31:57.singles match yesterday. His percentage of first serves was
:31:58. > :32:02.excellent. That is what they do so well. Jamie Murray has got such
:32:03. > :32:07.quick hands. Literally just a foot from the net when he gets that
:32:08. > :32:18.folly. Look, he's almost touching the net. That is modern day doubles.
:32:19. > :32:27.They almost day you to try and lob them. They have enough athletic
:32:28. > :32:34.ability to get back to overheads. They would rather take their chance
:32:35. > :32:42.getting right over the net. If you want to see overheads in Birmingham.
:32:43. > :32:49.Next week is probably even better. The all England badminton
:32:50. > :32:53.championships. Have you seen? It is an real. I'm sure there is tickets
:32:54. > :33:11.left. Quick challenge here. I'm told that
:33:12. > :33:15.the badminton courts are right underneath this service is being
:33:16. > :33:26.used for the tennis right now. That's good. Fine. Don.
:33:27. > :33:38.The orders are, the logistical orders, Sunday night, 2am,
:33:39. > :33:42.everything has to be cleared out. All remnants of this event
:33:43. > :33:49.disappear. This Barclaycard Arena will revert to a badminton venue. It
:33:50. > :33:58.is a fantastic place. The staging is superb. The organisers deserve a lot
:33:59. > :34:01.of credit. They have a lot of experience of organising these
:34:02. > :34:11.events. Don't want to give them too much credit. They might get big
:34:12. > :34:15.headed. Good doubles so far. Good quality. The Japanese pair have not
:34:16. > :34:21.been too intimidated. They have looked OK about here. The British
:34:22. > :34:27.pair trying to find their way on the returns. You sense it is only a
:34:28. > :34:33.matter of time before they click on the returns. Another British pair in
:34:34. > :34:41.share board yesterday, at challenge level. They beat these two. , they
:34:42. > :34:50.won the challenge. Beat this lot in the final. At least the Japanese
:34:51. > :34:55.pair are not scratch. They have played doubles together and made the
:34:56. > :35:06.final of the challenge. Couldn't handle the might of Liverpool, mind.
:35:07. > :35:21.Really? Called out. Can you see Andy Murray's intent. He is taking the
:35:22. > :35:26.returns of serve so early. Did that yesterday. On second serve, his
:35:27. > :35:54.returns were so good. Good volley. Good technique on both
:35:55. > :36:00.those. The forehand volley was good. Pretty low. Nice technique. Probably
:36:01. > :36:02.the hardest shot in tennis. The overhead smash on the backhand side.
:36:03. > :38:39.Very good point. Andy Murray not too happy with the
:38:40. > :38:43.umpire there. Saying, if you don't overrule that call, right underneath
:38:44. > :40:07.the chair, you're not going to overrule anything else.
:40:08. > :40:18.Two good returns in a row. That second serve from Jamie Murray was
:40:19. > :40:23.just sitting a bit. Uchiyama there are plenty of time to hit it down
:40:24. > :40:35.low. It is not just the speed you have two very. These to look very
:40:36. > :40:46.well grooved on the return. Seeing the ball well.
:40:47. > :40:52.The bourse will be quite slow at this point. A little bit fluffy
:40:53. > :41:20.after the warm up. -- balls. Good serve. Good work from Andy
:41:21. > :41:23.Murray at the net. He controlled the space down the middle and took a
:41:24. > :41:44.target away from the return very nicely.
:41:45. > :41:56.Got out of the game. Nicely done. Jamie Murray 4-3. A little bit of
:41:57. > :42:03.danger there. 25 minutes played. Davis Cup doubles. The reverse
:42:04. > :42:10.singles tomorrow. Andy Murray against Kei Nishikori. To top ten
:42:11. > :42:17.players. Take a minute just to remember the life and work of Bud
:42:18. > :42:22.Collins. American journalist, no great historian of the game over the
:42:23. > :42:26.years. And you would never meet anybody who loved the game more than
:42:27. > :42:35.Bud Collins who passed just a couple of days ago. I consider him and John
:42:36. > :42:42.Barrett people I looked up to in that line of work. You would have
:42:43. > :42:47.worked with him. I actually worked on TV in America with him. He was a
:42:48. > :42:53.brilliant man. He had the most colourful clothes of anybody. He
:42:54. > :42:58.used to joke that he was wearing his curtains. He was a lovely man and
:42:59. > :43:00.one of the most knowledgeable people in tennis who will be sorely missed.
:43:01. > :43:32.A great man That will annoy Murray. He will have
:43:33. > :43:38.thought he could have got that overhead but elected to hit the
:43:39. > :43:48.forehand. Could he have reached this one? Perhaps not.
:43:49. > :43:55.Just one final thought on Bud Collins. Wouldn't it be great if the
:43:56. > :44:00.International tennis Hall of Fame where he gave a lot of presentations
:44:01. > :44:05.put on an exhibition of his outfits. It would be quite an attraction.
:44:06. > :44:12.They were terrible. Full stop wonderful. If he ever played golf
:44:13. > :44:17.with John Daly, it would have been a classic site. Close there. No
:44:18. > :45:14.appeal. Don't know how much longer he can
:45:15. > :45:16.get away with those sort of second serves and staying back. Just about
:45:17. > :46:01.hanging on. Well played. Well played. Very good
:46:02. > :46:09.volley from Jamie Murray. It was a shoelace volley. He had to scrape it
:46:10. > :46:11.up off the floor. The ball dies a little bit on this surface. That one
:46:12. > :46:27.didn't come up. No future there. The move was poor
:46:28. > :46:32.to the middle of the court. The serve didn't have an awful lot on
:46:33. > :46:43.it. Andy Murray picks him off and it is a break. It is all about timing
:46:44. > :46:52.when you cross. He went a split too soon. Andy Murray with great racket
:46:53. > :46:54.head control had great timing. He had to do something. He took the
:46:55. > :47:33.risk and it didn't come off. Jamie Murray with just enough on
:47:34. > :47:38.this forehand volley. I've looked at the partners he's had over the
:47:39. > :47:59.years. He played with Greg was said key. Tim Henman.
:48:00. > :48:06.Not bad to have played with Rusedski, Henman, and Andy Murray.
:48:07. > :48:38.You have to pick your partners. Just a little bit upright on Matt
:48:39. > :48:47.volley, Andy Murray. He does that sometimes. A good forehand but
:48:48. > :48:58.didn't get downloading off. -- get down low enough. Nishioka is not the
:48:59. > :49:01.tallest of men but he can strike it when he gets time. A dangerous man
:49:02. > :49:22.to serve a second serve to. What a volley. That was class. That
:49:23. > :49:31.really was exceptional. Jamie has a chat to him. , that wasn't bad. Look
:49:32. > :49:34.at that! That is balance, technique. A tough looking shot coming at him.
:49:35. > :50:12.Dipping with speed. Jamie doesn't want to get this
:50:13. > :50:17.wrong. He went about half an hour early. He was sending an e-mail on
:50:18. > :50:30.that one. I'm going to be going across.
:50:31. > :50:41.And that's that. First set to Great Britain. Comfortable enough. 6-3. A
:50:42. > :50:45.reminder, the reverse singles take place tomorrow. We hope you will
:50:46. > :50:52.join is at one o'clock in the afternoon. The two number ones. Kei
:50:53. > :50:57.Nishikori and Andy Murray. Andy Murray electing to play today.
:50:58. > :51:02.Dominic Inglot missing out but he gets to spend some time with Jamie
:51:03. > :51:08.Baker. Were you disappointed not to be playing in this one? Any player
:51:09. > :51:13.wants to be on the sidelines when they have an opportunity to play. I
:51:14. > :51:18.would have loved to have played. When Andy wants to play, he is
:51:19. > :51:23.obviously world-class so he is always a strong player. Him and
:51:24. > :51:27.Jamie do well together. You want to go with the Ostrom guest
:51:28. > :51:34.combination. Hopefully, our get an opportunity at some point. It's a
:51:35. > :51:39.surprise that Nishikori is not in the team. What is your take? I was
:51:40. > :51:45.surprised as well. He probably thinks he can on a good day get Andy
:51:46. > :51:49.and it will go down to the last match. Maybe he is trying to save
:51:50. > :51:56.himself. Unless he's carrying a niggle. How has it been this week?
:51:57. > :52:04.Davis Cup champions. As it felt different? It has been relaxed. We
:52:05. > :52:10.achieved something great. We are loving it. To come back as 18, the
:52:11. > :52:15.brotherhood is awesome. Just having fun. If we can defend it, brilliant.
:52:16. > :52:21.It's another opportunity to win a great match. You might remember...
:52:22. > :52:28.I'll tell you in a second. Remember the film from 2004, with
:52:29. > :53:02.all better knee -- remember the film Wimbledon
:53:03. > :53:13.with Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany. Dominic Inglot was his stand-in.
:53:14. > :53:24.Paul Bettany came to our commentary box. It didn't help his game but it
:53:25. > :53:35.helped him win Wimbledon in the film. Didn't help his technique when
:53:36. > :54:04.he was hitting the strokes. Better next time.
:54:05. > :54:15.How early is that? He rushed into the net there. Takes it on the rise.
:54:16. > :54:23.121 mph, that serve. It wasn't exactly slow. He is already charging
:54:24. > :54:59.in. Seeing the ball so big. He might even win at County week.
:55:00. > :55:08.The people at the net to get the winning done. You cannot give the
:55:09. > :55:14.net away. It is where you should dominate. If you have got is Alain
:55:15. > :55:23.Sanchez at the back of the court, they were the first to stay back the
:55:24. > :55:36.time. They are not going to win this match giving away the net.
:55:37. > :55:48.That was lucky. Lovely technique on the volley. He reminds me of Pat
:55:49. > :55:59.Rafter. The way he gets ready for the volley. Good shout. His forehand
:56:00. > :56:11.volley looks very much like Pat Rafter's.
:56:12. > :56:23.Very, very fine. This is a great doubles team now. They are growing
:56:24. > :56:28.in stature. 30 years of age, Jamie. Andy Murray says he has another six
:56:29. > :56:40.or seven years. Why not? I like the sound of that.
:56:41. > :56:59.Yes. That's good. On the line. It's a break. So many people in this
:57:00. > :57:09.crowd so thrilled to watch the Murrays play. From Tipton, 17 kids
:57:10. > :57:13.in. A performance Center. Emily Southall is their coach. She has
:57:14. > :57:23.brought them all in. We have got moored Royce and Liz in from
:57:24. > :57:36.sterling. Grace Piper from Taunton tennis centre. With dad Neal. Nice
:57:37. > :57:37.to see Somerset represented here. Champions of the future. You better
:57:38. > :57:52.do your research. Andy was in the crowd in this very
:57:53. > :58:03.arena with his brother Jamie when Sweden
:58:04. > :00:05.beat Henman and Rusedski. What a team they had.
:00:06. > :00:17.Gorgeous. He loves those little delicate feel shots. He is very good
:00:18. > :01:07.at it. It looked like a mismatch. It is
:01:08. > :01:11.about this team keeping their concentration. That is all. The
:01:12. > :01:12.Japanese pair at the moment have nothing to hurt the British team
:01:13. > :01:32.with. I do like the look of that forehand,
:01:33. > :01:39.I can see why this guy would be knocking on the door of the top one
:01:40. > :01:44.hundred. He servely believes in his forehand. With the height he has not
:01:45. > :01:46.got, serving is something he is going to have to protect a bit. But
:01:47. > :02:05.he moves very well. Kyle Edmond unable to take his
:02:06. > :02:12.place, because he got a back spasm on Wednesday again. Flying out to
:02:13. > :02:25.Indian Wells. He got into the main draw there. The next big tournament.
:02:26. > :02:31.Dan Evans playing as the British No 2. Tomorrow could be a huge day. Kei
:02:32. > :02:47.Nishikori can certainly beat Andy Murray here. It is possible.
:02:48. > :02:55.That was a great chase and a long one as well and a very fine lob.
:02:56. > :03:02.Japan off and running. One man who can't be here. I must say hello to
:03:03. > :03:07.Roy Hindley from Preston. He is poorly at the moment. Grandson Noah
:03:08. > :03:13.is here who is eleven, who is going to be the next Andy Murray he tells
:03:14. > :03:20.me. David Lloyd, surely he is from. The coach Kyle White House deserves
:03:21. > :03:26.a mention I'm told. Get in touch. BBC tennis is the Twittery way to do
:03:27. > :03:33.it and hashtag BBC tennis is the, well the way to get our attention.
:03:34. > :03:43.You don't do any of that nonsense do you Lloydy in No, too technical for
:03:44. > :03:48.me. This bloke knows the internet, he bought that polystyrene suit for
:03:49. > :03:54.?40 off the internet. You get what you pay for! The captain, the
:03:55. > :04:00.Japanese captain, can he make any difference. Is there anything he can
:04:01. > :04:05.say? No not really. They have a pattern of playing and it is not
:04:06. > :04:09.effective against a team as good as the Murrays. Not many teams are
:04:10. > :04:15.going to beat the Murrays these days. I don't see where they can get
:04:16. > :04:24.back into the match. Unless the British pair lose their focus.
:04:25. > :04:32.We saw a dip with Kei Nishikori against Dan Evan. Looked like he was
:04:33. > :04:35.in cruise control and then just started spraying forehands all over
:04:36. > :04:38.the place and then he was in trouble. It can happen to anybody
:04:39. > :06:07.over five sets. The Japanese pair yet to have a
:06:08. > :06:46.break point. Jamie is one of those players who
:06:47. > :06:51.after the ball toss takes a physical step with the front foot and steps
:06:52. > :06:57.up to the line. Not many over the years like that. I can remember a
:06:58. > :07:46.German player doing that. It is quite rare.
:07:47. > :07:53.Excellent volley again there from Nishioka. A lovely technique. His
:07:54. > :08:41.partner gets the glory with the comfortable overhead.
:08:42. > :08:50.He's got the whole foot on the line they're singing! This is a very
:08:51. > :09:01.clinical lesson in how to dismantle players who are not serve/volleying,
:09:02. > :09:12.or just a weaker doubles team. It is a lesson in how to take the net.
:09:13. > :09:24.A good hold in the end. Just great to see doubles on the TV. I really
:09:25. > :09:28.believe that the ATP World Tour, I think they're missing a trick and I
:09:29. > :09:35.think TV companies are as well, by not putting more doubles on. In the
:09:36. > :09:40.UK we love it. It is the highlight of Wimbledon. It is superb. It is a
:09:41. > :09:45.totally different thing from singles. But the big names don't
:09:46. > :09:55.play it enough. That is the problem. If you look at this crowd of
:09:56. > :09:59.9,000-plus. It would be about 75% who play tennis and play doubles
:10:00. > :10:05.only. It is the event most people play at their clubs, but with we get
:10:06. > :10:13.little TV time apart from Wimbledon and the Davis Cup. And it started
:10:14. > :10:17.with Bjorn Borg was the first star that stopped playing Men's Doubles
:10:18. > :10:20.and it spread. It was like the other players thought he is getting an
:10:21. > :10:31.advantage by not playing and the rest of the top players stopped. The
:10:32. > :10:32.same happened in the women's game once the Williams sisters stopped.
:10:33. > :12:17.It is a great pity. Such a good rhythm going on his
:12:18. > :12:21.serve. Admittedly players like to serve indoors more than outdoors,
:12:22. > :12:26.because the elements don't come into it. But still rhythm is rhythm and
:12:27. > :12:35.Andy Murray will be happy with the way this service motion is going.
:12:36. > :12:45.Easing his way back into the game after 33 days away after losing the
:12:46. > :12:52.Australian Open final to Novak Djokovic.
:12:53. > :13:00.Just looks like he is not going to miss. There was a couple of times
:13:01. > :13:06.yesterday when he ballooned a couple of second serves against Taro
:13:07. > :13:13.Daniel, but the rhythm came back. The second serve is not the finished
:13:14. > :13:23.product. But the first serve is magnificent. When you talk about
:13:24. > :13:27.doubles and the Japanese players staying back and getting into
:13:28. > :13:30.rallies, the Murrays are unlike most other teams, most teams that when
:13:31. > :13:34.they're returning, they don't have the sort of the ability to hit the
:13:35. > :13:39.ball on the rise and charge to the net. They also stay back and hit
:13:40. > :13:43.balls. Most people that do this sort of, where they stay back, the other
:13:44. > :13:46.teams are staying back on the baseline, the Murrays are different.
:13:47. > :13:50.It is a different pairing and they can charge and hit the ball on the
:13:51. > :13:53.run and there is a different look coming at them every time. It must
:13:54. > :14:14.be daunting. Stirring the university Barmy Army
:14:15. > :14:16.likely to make an early start on Broad Street this evening I would
:14:17. > :15:02.think! Big Tay advice cup weekend this --
:15:03. > :15:04.big Davis Cup weekend. 16 teams in the world group. Four rounds and a
:15:05. > :15:35.final in November again this year. And Leyton Hewitt put himself in the
:15:36. > :15:41.doubles. He picked himself. Comes out of retirement and picks himself
:15:42. > :15:48.in the doubles. Nick Kyrgios injured. So they lost to the Bryans
:15:49. > :15:57.the Australians in five sets. We will bring you up to speed with the
:15:58. > :16:05.results later. Great Britain play the winner of Serbia against
:16:06. > :16:09.Kazakhstan and Sue Barker has been looking at the Kazakhstany names and
:16:10. > :16:19.is looking forward to taking you through those names I'm sure!
:16:20. > :16:29.Lovely to watch. They just straightaway attack the serve and
:16:30. > :16:35.get into the net. You don't get time to breathe. They're right on top of
:16:36. > :16:46.the net. They don't get time to get into the rally the Japanese team.
:16:47. > :17:07.Jamie Murray knows when he is up at the net he can get those type of
:17:08. > :17:25.returns from his brother and then he can cross.
:17:26. > :17:37.Well played again. Just so solid. They would be winning Grand Slams
:17:38. > :17:46.together if they played in doubles. I tell you that now. They're a good
:17:47. > :17:47.combo. And the Japanese players looking for gaps there and can't
:17:48. > :18:06.find them. What was I doing? Trying to play a
:18:07. > :18:12.drop volley. Go back deep. I think that was the shot he was looking
:18:13. > :18:18.for. I am not sure. You don't see many mishits like this. Yes, I think
:18:19. > :18:21.it was a drop volley. Yes, but... He has not lined up with his eyes. Look
:18:22. > :18:50.at him! The The Japanese will have done well
:18:51. > :18:52.if they get over this service game. The British pair should really have
:18:53. > :19:18.broken. Too bad for Andy Murray, he hit a
:19:19. > :19:38.clean winner for sure off that. Was that a correction first serve? Yes.
:19:39. > :19:48.Well the Murray family. Good to see them here. I haven't seen dad here
:19:49. > :19:50.today. But they must be so proud to look down and see your boys doing so
:19:51. > :20:20.well. It will be a while until the Murrays
:20:21. > :20:26.are in action again in the UK. The last chance to see Jamie before he
:20:27. > :20:41.heads off on his travels as world No 2 doubles player now.
:20:42. > :21:55.It is away. And it is two breaks of serve, Great Britain are on the way
:21:56. > :22:05.behind the Murray brothers. You're on Sir! Mr Erskine! So looking good
:22:06. > :22:08.for Team GB at the moment. We did ask you for your inspirations
:22:09. > :22:17.earlier as we look at the Mursies and so many kids in here, enjoying
:22:18. > :22:28.watching their heroes play on court. Steve reckons it was Becker at
:22:29. > :22:34.Wimbledon all those years ago. Jane says Newcombe and Roache, such
:22:35. > :22:41.hunks, met them when I was 14. Swoon moment. Borg was my inspiration,
:22:42. > :22:48.watched him through a policeman's legs. Are you sure that wasn't Sue
:22:49. > :22:49.Barker? She watched him through the window of the women's locker room at
:22:50. > :23:11.Wimbledon. I'm sitting alongside Legs Lloyd
:23:12. > :23:35.here as he was known! Many years ago.
:23:36. > :23:41.Great, two breaks down and you come up with that. You will take them
:23:42. > :24:13.when ever they come A very fine return.
:24:14. > :24:22.World No 1 from Brazil. Marcelo Melo. He has a lot of points to
:24:23. > :24:23.defend in the clay-court season. Jamie Murray could be world No 1
:24:24. > :24:41.before Wimbledon. I wonder if Andy Murray could ever
:24:42. > :24:47.take over as Novak Djokovic as world No 1 in singles. Not likely at the
:24:48. > :24:50.moment. He is a lot of points ahead Djokovic from the rest of the field.
:24:51. > :25:23.An amazing last couple of years he has had.
:25:24. > :25:30.That is a long discussion. When you're just about to be two sets up.
:25:31. > :25:48.That is a long break. Whatever they were talking about, it
:25:49. > :25:53.was, it must have worked. It is two sets to love Britain. Set fair in
:25:54. > :26:02.this tie. It is a world group first round match. Britain defending the
:26:03. > :26:07.title they won so historically in Ghent in November. Serbia or
:26:08. > :26:13.Kazakhstan standing by. We will update you on the results later. Now
:26:14. > :26:20.let's taste the atmosphere with Jamie Baker. He has known one or two
:26:21. > :26:27.Davis Cup ties. So we are here, Britain are two up. Can we have a
:26:28. > :26:34.bit of fun and bring you here to the Stirling University Barmy Army. How
:26:35. > :26:40.is your weekend? Not a dull moment. Last year did you follow the team?
:26:41. > :26:47.Yes all four apart from Belgium. Anyone here who went to Belgium?
:26:48. > :26:50.Quite a few. Everyone apart from me. Keep making the noise. You're doing
:26:51. > :26:58.a great job. What else can we find here? Team taking things seriously,
:26:59. > :27:07.but here very interesting, if we can pick this up, there is a chair with
:27:08. > :27:13.the name the Dock. The team doctor's main job is throwing jaffa cakes
:27:14. > :27:17.into the crowd. He has his own chair and he has managed to break it.
:27:18. > :27:24.Thank you very much. A flavour from down there. Maybe if you're the
:27:25. > :27:31.oldest person on the bench you get a seat? He doesn't have the stamina of
:27:32. > :27:40.the Stirling University Barmy Army. The studies take a back seat clearly
:27:41. > :27:45.when there is tennis in town. Let's catch up with what is happening in
:27:46. > :27:49.the world group. Sue. We have time to go through the other matches in
:27:50. > :27:55.the world group. Britain as champions at the top. They will play
:27:56. > :28:00.Serbia or Kazakhstan. It was 1-1 after the singles yesterday.
:28:01. > :28:06.Djokovic is playing in the doubles with Zimonjic. The Kazakhstan have
:28:07. > :28:14.taken the first set. It is 4-4 in the second match. Italy two up
:28:15. > :28:24.against Switzerland. Poland and Argentina, Argentina are 2-1 up.
:28:25. > :28:32.France against Canada, France are two up. The Czech Republic are
:28:33. > :28:37.leading Germany 2-1. A wonderful battle from Berdych yesterday. But
:28:38. > :28:43.the Czech have won the doubles and are 2-1 up. Australia against United
:28:44. > :28:49.States, Andrew and John have been talking about Leyton Hewitt coming
:28:50. > :28:56.back. They lost. In the press conference he rule -- refused to
:28:57. > :29:04.rule himself out from the fifth rubber. Belgium who, Britain beat
:29:05. > :29:15.last year, nay are 1-1 in the doubles. They're about to resume now
:29:16. > :29:22.the third set. Thank you Sue, that was a blemish free pronunciation of
:29:23. > :29:35.that bloke from Kazakhstan. Sue has been practicing. Can I just tip my
:29:36. > :29:44.hat to Yannick Noah, he has choice on the play the home match with
:29:45. > :29:50.Kanga in Guadalupe. There is a certain style to that. No Spain you
:29:51. > :30:19.see in the world group. They have dropped out. But they will be back.
:30:20. > :30:28.This bloke has been watching videos of Pat Rafter. It is about the best
:30:29. > :30:35.person you could possibly copy. Perhaps they have the same coach or
:30:36. > :30:39.there is some other connection. It is a very similar service motion as
:30:40. > :30:48.well. Absolute symmetry going up. Both arms together.
:30:49. > :31:35.Tomorrow at one o'clock for this man. The youngest man in the top ten
:31:36. > :31:39.by quite some margin. You have to go down to number 13 in the world to
:31:40. > :31:46.find somebody younger than him in the Los Raonic. Playing Murray
:31:47. > :32:24.tomorrow at one o'clock. I know you'll want to join us.
:32:25. > :32:31.Couldn't have hit a deeper volley than that. Can get anything out of
:32:32. > :32:38.it. A very good forehand volley here. Two or three inches from the
:32:39. > :32:52.baseline. That's what comes back at you. That's Murray.
:32:53. > :33:00.That's more like it. The first one should have got away. He had a big
:33:01. > :33:17.swing at it. That is a very fine old. -- hold.
:33:18. > :33:26.Uchiyama has played six ties at Davis Cup. You don't really make a
:33:27. > :33:30.living at his level. But in Japan they have a lot of league matches
:33:31. > :33:34.where Japanese players get paid extremely well. It is one of the
:33:35. > :33:39.only countries in the world way could be ranked low and still make
:33:40. > :33:52.substantial money. A lot more than in any other country, to be honest.
:33:53. > :33:55.In fact, for a while, it was difficult to get Japanese players
:33:56. > :34:05.out of Japan because they were doing so well financially.
:34:06. > :34:13.Uchiyama has been the better of the two. He is more of a purist doubles
:34:14. > :34:23.player. He knows what he's doing around court. Along with Nishikori,
:34:24. > :34:35.he had a good win in 2014. In the Japanese stadium with the
:34:36. > :34:39.retractable roof. I don't think it does. When I played, we got rained
:34:40. > :35:48.off. Again, he's just about over the net
:35:49. > :36:31.when he hits that volley. CROWD: Let's go! Why wouldn't you
:36:32. > :36:36.teach two hands on a racket to hit a backhand? Returns like that, you
:36:37. > :37:02.couldn't do that with a single hand. Third year in the Davis Cup top
:37:03. > :37:15.group, the world group that we talk about. The Japan captain Minoru Ueda
:37:16. > :37:16.has had plenty of success. Beating Colombia away on clay, that's a
:37:17. > :37:31.tough trip. The organisers here are probably
:37:32. > :37:36.hoping that the Japanese pair come back a bit. This match is awfully
:37:37. > :37:45.quick and there is only one match today. I've always thought that with
:37:46. > :37:55.these doubles it is best to have a stand-by. Have the best juniors on
:37:56. > :38:00.stand-by to play a match. You know, if you get a quick match. If it's
:38:01. > :38:07.under two hours. People will come out of here, if you have the number
:38:08. > :38:13.one Japan juniors, the number one British player. A number of people
:38:14. > :38:17.would stay to watch the tennis. Saturday in Davis Cup can be great
:38:18. > :38:24.but it also can be the worst value out of the three days.
:38:25. > :38:35.Last year, the three home ties, the doubles, were absolutely fantastic.
:38:36. > :38:57.Against the Americans, that went to the distance. There was Tsonga and
:38:58. > :39:14.Mahut. Then you had that tremendous doubles with Hewitt and Groth for
:39:15. > :39:16.Australia. Little and large. I always remember the chest bump
:39:17. > :40:08.Hewitt tried to John, players and coaches can't
:40:09. > :40:14.afford to look forward. One match at a time. Nothing taken for granted.
:40:15. > :40:19.You just take care of business. As we look ahead to tomorrow. It is far
:40:20. > :40:26.from inconceivable that the Japanese could pull this back and release to
:40:27. > :40:33.reverse singles. Absolutely. Nishikori. Let's not forget it is
:40:34. > :40:38.the first top ten player Murray has played in singles in Davis Cup. It
:40:39. > :40:44.is the toughest match he is going to play in Davis Cup. We have seen him
:40:45. > :40:50.play someone before matches but he is a world-class player. He has been
:40:51. > :40:55.in finals of a Grand Slam. He is getting married when he hasn't
:40:56. > :41:06.played much for five weeks. It is a 50-50 match on paper. They are
:41:07. > :41:12.slightly the favourites in terms of ranking. With home advantage, it is
:41:13. > :41:24.50-50. They have a good chance. This tie is definitely not over.
:41:25. > :41:37.I'd like that one back again. Excellent first return. Mid-court
:41:38. > :41:42.forehand. Gives you just such a great feeling when you get that 0-
:41:43. > :41:55.15. That was a good opportunity to do that.
:41:56. > :42:04.Talking of doubles here. A big shout out to Johnny O Mara and Scott
:42:05. > :42:09.Clayton. They are playing a doubles final today in Portugal. Good luck
:42:10. > :42:31.as they continue their climb up the world rankings.
:42:32. > :42:45.Good hands. So click at the net. -- so quick at the net. That's when you
:42:46. > :42:52.have to have short backswing is on the volleys. Just stick a racket out
:42:53. > :42:54.in front. You have no time for any take-back whatsoever. Otherwise, the
:42:55. > :43:12.ball is going to fly. A little tight there on the forehand
:43:13. > :43:17.volley. Credit to the Japanese pairing for not going away in terms
:43:18. > :43:22.of intensity and enthusiast for the task. Doesn't look like they are
:43:23. > :43:27.going to win this match. But you never know. You can pick up a set
:43:28. > :43:34.and start the journey back and look what happens.
:43:35. > :43:44.That was close. And he wants to look at that. Knowing full well, as he
:43:45. > :43:49.requests the challenge that he is making his brother wait between
:43:50. > :43:56.first and second serves. Exactly right. There's a lot to take into
:43:57. > :44:08.account when you are about to challenge or not. Why is that first
:44:09. > :44:13.serve? Why isn't that point? He could say he heard it before he hit
:44:14. > :44:24.the ball. I do not understand that rule in tennis. That is, for sure,
:44:25. > :44:26.and umpire's call. If you get your racket onto it, the call has not
:44:27. > :44:49.affected you. I just think sometimes on the return
:44:50. > :44:53.of serve, both Japanese players are aware of this formation and they
:44:54. > :44:57.take their eye of the return a little bit. They have to make up
:44:58. > :45:08.their mind where they are going to hit the ball and just hit it. If you
:45:09. > :45:13.pull back just a fraction because you see someone moving, you are
:45:14. > :45:23.going to miss the ball. Just hit it. Pick a target. Sound advice. If you
:45:24. > :45:30.are having a harder time returning, just pick a target and aimed at it.
:45:31. > :45:31.John Lloyd is available for tennis lessons at your local park and club.
:45:32. > :47:03.Reasonable rates. Tidy. For straight. The British
:47:04. > :47:19.women have been playing extremely well. Show Joanna
:47:20. > :47:39.come Konta. Did well. But Heather Watson, she beat a former world
:47:40. > :47:49.number one. Naomi Brodie who was in a semifinal in Auckland is now in a
:47:50. > :47:55.semifinal in Kuala Lumpur. She has a great start to the year. She brings
:47:56. > :48:03.a great attitude to the court. Ready for a fight at any moment.
:48:04. > :48:11.Religions. She is very likely. Won't let anybody run over her. Nor will
:48:12. > :48:27.Heather Watson. Well done to them. Two semifinals this week on tour.
:48:28. > :48:57.The women's equivalent to the Davis Cup is the Federation cup.
:48:58. > :49:09.Quick hands again. Countless trills that they do, those doubles trills,
:49:10. > :49:16.you see them working out. Just thumping the ball right at them.
:49:17. > :49:20.They can pick them off with their reflexes. Sometimes they get hit but
:49:21. > :49:50.they improved their reflexes. They are so quick out there.
:49:51. > :49:55.First double fault by the British pair. Over an hour and a half
:49:56. > :51:14.played. Had some correspondence in about a
:51:15. > :51:20.man with a British passport now who has played for Slovenia three times
:51:21. > :51:34.in Davis Cup and was ruled ineligible for Great Britain.
:51:35. > :51:48.There was a Davis Cup rule change which said you cannot represent a
:51:49. > :51:54.second, country. The LTA launched an appeal saying that the application
:51:55. > :52:03.hadn't gone in until after the rule change. So the wait goes on for him.
:52:04. > :52:08.Trouble is, the board don't meet every weekend. A shame for him
:52:09. > :52:10.because he probably would have been selected for the final and would
:52:11. > :53:35.have played. 188 miles an hour, that second
:53:36. > :54:05.serve. Just sat up and said it me. That is what Murray did.
:54:06. > :54:22.Good move. That's the way to help your partner.
:54:23. > :54:26.Murray doesn't have a devastating return. He likes the ball coming
:54:27. > :55:45.onto him with more pace, actually. That's it. Fire Leon Smith. He had
:55:46. > :55:56.his chair in the way. He would have got to that. If he gets injured.
:55:57. > :56:10.He's not going to play tomorrow. Look at this. He couldn't go down
:56:11. > :56:21.the lane. -- line. Leon's head was in the way. Who called that out? Did
:56:22. > :56:26.somebody call that out? It was called out. The linesman didn't seem
:56:27. > :56:41.very sure of themselves. Replay the point. Andy with hands on
:56:42. > :57:22.hips. They were well into the point. So, the Japanese pairing have done
:57:23. > :57:33.better in this set than the other two. 3-4 at the moment from a
:57:34. > :57:41.British perspective. Andy is giving the umpire a bit of stick at the
:57:42. > :57:54.end. That was the replayed point there. The Japanese team have done
:57:55. > :58:10.well to hang in. It looked pretty grim at 2-0. They have hung in
:58:11. > :58:12.there. The Murrays level has dropped a little bit. They don't want it
:58:13. > :58:28.dragging. 9000 people here. At the Arena in
:58:29. > :59:07.Birmingham. Davis Cup doubles. The key is. When you set of feet,
:59:08. > :59:13.don't allow yourself to go off-balance. When you are at the
:59:14. > :59:19.net, controlling territory, the toes and the feat will work. They can
:59:20. > :59:25.push you off. But as soon as you leave the ground, it is very hard to
:59:26. > :59:36.control your movement. From the movement, it's comes from the calf,
:59:37. > :59:44.the toes, the ankle and the feet. Too many club players leave and
:59:45. > :59:46.start over. You don't want to do that unless you absolutely have to.
:59:47. > :02:06.Stand your ground. Very nicely played. That had plenty
:02:07. > :02:14.of slice and some back-spin on it as well. So when it hit the court it
:02:15. > :02:19.came back towards the net. If Murray can't get it, it must have been
:02:20. > :02:21.good. See the way he had to adjust his line of movement there to take
:02:22. > :02:44.account of the spin. A beautiful one, two combination a
:02:45. > :03:53.dipping return and Jamie moving at the right time.
:03:54. > :04:01.I'm full of respect for these two, they're outclassed, yet, having gone
:04:02. > :04:05.two sets down away from home, they have really kept the intensity level
:04:06. > :04:10.up and a real lesson that they're doing well. That was not an easy
:04:11. > :04:12.point to hang in there. But they find themselves two break points up.
:04:13. > :05:41.Two game points. Three straight points. A key moment
:05:42. > :06:13.here. And that is it four straight -
:06:14. > :06:17.Murray makes the return, Murray junior that is, and it is a break
:06:18. > :06:27.and he will serve for this doubles tie and to put Great Britain at 2-1
:06:28. > :06:33.ahead in this first round match. To be fair, this has not been a match
:06:34. > :06:39.and it never was likely to be a match of you know any great drama,
:06:40. > :06:44.given the difference in class between these two teams. But the job
:06:45. > :06:49.has to be done and it's never easy. Yeah. And Andy Murray, it is good
:06:50. > :06:54.for him to get some match practice. There was a couple of instances in
:06:55. > :07:00.his singles where a bit rusty and this is like a very good practice
:07:01. > :07:03.session for him to be frank. But it is something he needed to go through
:07:04. > :07:09.under match conditions and you know he played well. It is good for him.
:07:10. > :07:14.Good for tomorrow. And the tennis balls will only be just one game old
:07:15. > :07:23.as he tries to serve for the match here. And it will be competitive
:07:24. > :07:27.tomorrow. 1 o'clock on BBC1. Unless you're in Scotland, in which case it
:07:28. > :08:45.is BBC2. It is a lesson in how to move off
:08:46. > :08:51.your partner's serve. Just a suggestion of a fake. To his right.
:08:52. > :08:57.And then an explosive step, half a step to the left. And the easy
:08:58. > :09:04.enough put away, made possible by the movement.
:09:05. > :09:11.He started the match with a love-hold from this end and he is
:09:12. > :09:14.one point away from a love-hold at the end of the match. It is three
:09:15. > :09:28.match points Great Britain. Too good, too strong from the
:09:29. > :09:30.Murrays. 2-1 Great Britain are in charge of this world group tie
:09:31. > :09:50.against the Japanese. Good work all around again on the
:09:51. > :09:57.British team and that includes the bench. It is a team effort. Leon
:09:58. > :10:07.Smith as well. And the Murrays going down the line. There is the doubles
:10:08. > :10:11.specialist coach. Dom Inglot, who had to make way when Andy Murray
:10:12. > :10:16.said he was going to play. Of course he would have been disappointed not
:10:17. > :10:20.to play. But who would not understand the great man Andy Murray
:10:21. > :10:36.choosing to play and being allowed to. There could be a long way to go
:10:37. > :10:42.in this tie. Kei Nishikori versus Andy Murray tomorrow at 1. As the
:10:43. > :10:50.Japanese make their way out of the arena. It is a tie that can still be
:10:51. > :10:54.lost. While we enjoy the success of today, we remind ourselves that it
:10:55. > :11:06.is not over yet. So join us on Sunday. No breaks of serve for the
:11:07. > :11:12.Japanese. Seven breaks of serve for the great British team. One hour and
:11:13. > :11:20.53 minutes of pretty dominant doubles it has to be said. That was
:11:21. > :11:22.always likely to be the case. Doubles always pivotal in this Davis
:11:23. > :11:38.Cup format. So victory for Andy and Jaimy
:11:39. > :11:46.Murray. Let's get their thoughts now with Annabel Croft. Congratulations,
:11:47. > :11:52.a fantastic performance, you put Team GB two one ahead, give us our
:11:53. > :11:58.take on the match Jamie? Yeah, we played a great match. Very solid, it
:11:59. > :12:04.wasn't easy, the guys came out with a lot of good shots. Some tricky
:12:05. > :12:10.players as well. And we loved being out here. A great experience for me
:12:11. > :12:14.and thanks to everyone for getting behind us and cheering so loudly
:12:15. > :12:20.from start to finish. Andy, we have seen a lot of communication between
:12:21. > :12:25.you two, is there some sixth sense when you're out here playing as
:12:26. > :12:29.brothers? I think we know each other's games very well. That helps.
:12:30. > :12:35.When the ball's in a certain place, I show the shot Jamie's going to
:12:36. > :12:44.pick and my strengths and his strengths make a good team. Both of
:12:45. > :12:50.us served well today. And then Jamie's obviously one of the best
:12:51. > :12:57.net players in the world, singles or doubles. So that helps a lot in
:12:58. > :13:03.doubles and when I can get a few returns together, then we play some
:13:04. > :13:09.good tennis. It was a good win. You mentioned serving, you were unbroken
:13:10. > :13:13.and finished with an ace, do you serve differently in doubles? It
:13:14. > :13:20.depends a bit. In the final against Belgium I went for a high percentage
:13:21. > :13:24.of first serves and I wasn't trying to serve too many aces. Because of
:13:25. > :13:29.conditions and I wasn't serving as well. Yesterday and today I have
:13:30. > :13:34.been able to get a lot of free points and you may as well get a lot
:13:35. > :13:38.of aces and get a lot of cheap points. There was a lot of secrecy
:13:39. > :13:42.surrounding the pairings today, you didn't find out until an hour
:13:43. > :13:48.before, were you surprised they didn't put Kei Nishikori in? Not
:13:49. > :13:55.really. My coach thought they were going to do it. But didn't happen.
:13:56. > :13:59.Kai played a long match and he has not played a lot of doubles. I felt
:14:00. > :14:03.they were going to stick as they did and it worked out for us. Of course
:14:04. > :14:07.you have got Kei Nishikori we think tomorrow going into the final day's
:14:08. > :14:13.play. What are you thoughts on facing him again? You have played
:14:14. > :14:25.him many times. He beat you at the O2:. I played well against him last
:14:26. > :14:30.year. Played him in Madrid and Montreal. He played a very good
:14:31. > :14:43.match with Dan yesterday and it will be tough. I'm playing well and
:14:44. > :14:47.hopefully can put a good one together tomorrow. And put in a good
:14:48. > :14:55.performance and try and seal the win. If not, Dan is capable of
:14:56. > :15:02.winning his match as well. We have got two chances at winning tomorrow.
:15:03. > :15:21.Well done again today, Jamie and Andy Murray!
:15:22. > :15:30.Well of course 2-1 up going into tomorrow, all going to plan? Well
:15:31. > :15:34.this would have been what people expected on paper. Andy did a great
:15:35. > :15:46.job yesterday and Andy and Jamie put in a great performance. Dan should
:15:47. > :15:49.be proud of what he did yesterday. I think the important thing is now the
:15:50. > :15:54.way the format is you have two cracks at it tomorrow and that is
:15:55. > :16:01.what is great. The doubles is important to go back 2-1 up feels a
:16:02. > :16:05.damn sight better and gives us momentum into tomorrow. It will be
:16:06. > :16:14.difficult. Kei Nishikori is a difficult opponent. We have two
:16:15. > :16:19.chances. I I will let them walk off the court! Before we talk about
:16:20. > :16:23.tomorrow, you must have been proud of the way they played this match
:16:24. > :16:27.today? They have so much experience now and what we went through last
:16:28. > :16:31.year, you know, the intensity of the matches is such that it doesn't
:16:32. > :16:35.matter who you're facing, you have to bring it in every point. It can
:16:36. > :16:41.change quickly. They know each other's game so well and trust each
:16:42. > :16:44.other. And I think also in Davis Cup, everyone that is here, the
:16:45. > :16:59.Saturday is like an amazing atmosphere. You guys were fantastic
:17:00. > :17:04.today, so thanks! But it helps, it is a difficult decision for somebody
:17:05. > :17:07.like Dom Inglot, it is tough to keep having those conversations saying we
:17:08. > :17:11.are going to go with Andy. He gets it. His time will come. But he has
:17:12. > :17:19.been brilliant again helping with the preparation. And of course Andy
:17:20. > :17:23.can seal the tie tomorrow against Kei Nishikori. Give us your thoughts
:17:24. > :17:29.on that match up? As Andy said a couple of matches last year. I know
:17:30. > :17:35.who I want going out for my team, it is Andy. So I'm biased on that way.
:17:36. > :17:40.But it will be difficult. Kei Nishikori is a good player. I don't
:17:41. > :17:46.think the court is giving either team an advantage. Kei Nishikori has
:17:47. > :17:51.a good record indoor this year. But Andy is playing great, despite the
:17:52. > :17:57.fact he has not played a lot of matches since the Aussie Open. You
:17:58. > :18:03.know what he is going to do, will give 100%. Well done. We look
:18:04. > :18:11.forward to tomorrow. Leon Smith ladies and gentlemen.
:18:12. > :18:15.STUDIO: And Great Britain go 2-1 up here in Birmingham. So it is going
:18:16. > :18:21.to be decided tomorrow on the doubles. Andy Murray against Kei
:18:22. > :18:28.Nishikori and then Dan Evans against Taro Daniel. Will that be the
:18:29. > :18:32.decider? That is tomorrow. Jamie and John are with me. When we knew that
:18:33. > :18:36.Kei Nishikori wasn't playing, we knew it was a one-sided match up. As
:18:37. > :18:42.we know, no match is easy and they had to commit themselves and they
:18:43. > :18:48.did? Yes the Japanese pair provided a lot of resistance the first 25 or
:18:49. > :18:54.30 minutes. But as soon as the Brits got the first break it was one-way
:18:55. > :18:59.traffic. There is two arguments in terms of Kei Nishikori not playing.
:19:00. > :19:03.But when you have somebody that good in your team, when you come out and
:19:04. > :19:07.don't win the doubles and you're playing Andy Murray in the singles,
:19:08. > :19:11.it is amazing he is not opt court. We were surprised. You look at Andy
:19:12. > :19:15.Murray, he has committed himself and looked very sharp and I think if I
:19:16. > :19:23.was watching that, Kei Nishikori, that would be, I would be worried.
:19:24. > :19:27.Yes I would think. Think. So I'm shocked he didn't play. He obviously
:19:28. > :19:32.didn't want to play. If he had wanted to play, the captain would
:19:33. > :19:36.have picked him. So he felt like he didn't have enough gas in the tank
:19:37. > :19:41.to play against Murray if he played another doubles. I think it was a
:19:42. > :19:45.bad decision. The Murrays looked sharp and combined so well and
:19:46. > :19:52.talked about the brotherly instinct they have and their games combine
:19:53. > :19:58.well. Yes Andy mentioned I think he said if I put in a few return, Jamie
:19:59. > :20:01.is good at the net. Well he does more than put a few in the court.
:20:02. > :20:06.Both of them now, when they're at the net are so good at recognising
:20:07. > :20:15.when to add pace on to the volleys and go for it. Other time when the
:20:16. > :20:20.take pace off. Sometimes the Japanese hit good ground strokes and
:20:21. > :20:24.the British pair hit the volleys. They're all over the net and Jamie
:20:25. > :20:30.seems to have grown as a doubles player. He was very good a few years
:20:31. > :20:34.ago. But he is better now. He is a Grand Slam title holder, No 2 in the
:20:35. > :20:42.world, the confidence that gives you. I think he was nervous for a
:20:43. > :20:45.while playing with Andy, it is almost Andy and someone else can
:20:46. > :20:49.win. Sometimes he has played the best on the court and the
:20:50. > :20:55.combinations are good and he walks out there and you look at him and
:20:56. > :21:00.you don't have any doubts. Before his second serve was shaky at times.
:21:01. > :21:05.But now you expect him to win. 2-1 up and going into tomorrow. It may
:21:06. > :21:12.go down to the fifth. If Andy Murray can finish it against Kei Nishikori.
:21:13. > :21:20.Annabel asked him about the time he lost in 2014, but he reminded her, I
:21:21. > :21:25.beat him in Canada easily. It was like a golfer, they don't remember
:21:26. > :21:29.the putts they missed. He knows he is playing well and mes fresh and
:21:30. > :21:33.maybe if Kei Nishikori plays the match of his life and ends up
:21:34. > :21:39.beating Andy, you would say that was the right decision. But the chances,
:21:40. > :21:45.if Andy and Kei Nishikori played in a better five set matches ten times,
:21:46. > :21:49.I'm thinking eight or nine out of ten Andy is coming through. I think
:21:50. > :21:53.what Kei Nishikori is hoping, because Andy Murray had some weeks
:21:54. > :21:58.off and maybe he wouldn't be sharp. But I think he got that answered
:21:59. > :22:04.today. He was watching and I'm sure he is worried. Andy didn't miss many
:22:05. > :22:10.balls. When you have that break, Andy looks so eager and will run
:22:11. > :22:14.every ball down tomorrow. I think this will be one of the toughest
:22:15. > :22:21.matches he has played in the Davis Cup, but I think he is too good for
:22:22. > :22:30.him. We will see Stock Market wonderful rallies. It is slower than
:22:31. > :22:37.they wanted it and that didn't help Dan Evan. But tomorrow there will be
:22:38. > :22:42.some amazing exchanges. Kei Nishikori's serve is the weakest
:22:43. > :22:47.point of his game. Andy loves a physical challenge and another sign
:22:48. > :22:52.Kei Nishikori did not want to be out today, maybe he is not tough enough.
:22:53. > :22:57.The person that will be cheering the most is Dan Evan. I don't think he
:22:58. > :23:04.will want to come out here to play a fifth match? Probably not. But he is
:23:05. > :23:07.good in fifth matches. I fancy his chances to win. He played well
:23:08. > :23:11.enough to show what he is about and he has more variety than his
:23:12. > :23:19.opponent and I think he will win. We will see that. Is tomorrow. And we
:23:20. > :23:28.will be on the air at 1 o'clock. It is on BBC One, but BBC2 if you're
:23:29. > :23:34.watching in Scotland. Also coming up today the world track cycling from 7
:23:35. > :23:45.o'clock on the red button and five live and join Gary Lineker for Match
:23:46. > :23:49.of the Day. Tomorrow, we have Andy Murray against Kei Nishikori. Two of
:23:50. > :23:55.the game's best. That is tomorrow at 1 o'clock. Join us then. Today, the
:23:56. > :24:03.Murray brothers produced another wonderful triumph. Goodbye.
:24:04. > :24:13.# Good times... # In front of 9,000 people in Birmingham. That is that.
:24:14. > :24:20.First set to Great Britain. Comfortable enough. This is a great
:24:21. > :24:23.doubles team you know. At the moment they have got nothing to hurt the
:24:24. > :24:31.British team with. Great Britain are on the way. Looking good for Team
:24:32. > :24:33.GB. Too good, too strong from the Murrays. 2-1 Great Britain.
