:00:14. > :00:19.In 1971, Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal, aged 21, took the

:00:19. > :00:24.individual title here at Burghley. This year, she is back to celebrate

:00:24. > :00:28.the 50th anniversary of the trials and to present the trophy to the

:00:28. > :00:33.winner of this year's most prestigious and longest running

:00:33. > :00:43.four-star challenge. It is the Burghley Horse Trials, the pinnacle

:00:43. > :00:59.

:00:59. > :01:03.This place has been the setting for films, television series, adverts

:01:04. > :01:08.and photo-shoot. But this weekend, over 100,000 people will come

:01:08. > :01:15.through the gates of the park to watch the world's best event riders.

:01:15. > :01:19.We have so much to look forward to this afternoon. Plus, Burghley

:01:19. > :01:24.celebrates its 50th anniversary and Mary King celebrate her 50th, too.

:01:24. > :01:28.We look back with her over her amazing career. With just under a

:01:28. > :01:32.year to go, we bring you the professional's view of the Olympic

:01:32. > :01:36.Park of Greenwich, home to the eventing for the London 2012

:01:36. > :01:39.Olympics. It and we asked some of the top riders to give their

:01:39. > :01:44.perspective of the major questions on the cross-country course and all

:01:44. > :01:49.new water feature, designed by Captain Mark Phillips. And we will

:01:49. > :01:54.show you the highlights of all three phases, all the Riders

:01:54. > :01:59.desperate to catch the eye of their Olympic selectors. Eventing is an

:01:59. > :02:04.incredibly hard sport to predict because so much can go wrong. A

:02:04. > :02:08.run-out on the cross country or a mistake in the dressage. Here are

:02:08. > :02:12.some of the names you might want to look out for. William Fox-Pitt has

:02:12. > :02:16.won the title here five times. He is ranked number one in the world

:02:17. > :02:21.and is a stalwart of the British team. Ranked number two is Mary

:02:21. > :02:25.King, who celebrates her 50th birthday this year. She was first

:02:25. > :02:35.and second in Kentucky and luckily, and injured after a horrible fall

:02:35. > :02:42.last weekend. The New Zealand All Blacks are out in force. Mark came

:02:42. > :02:49.back when he won Badminton in the spring. Blyth Tait is also back,

:02:49. > :02:55.riding at Burghley since -- for the first time since 2004. Nicholson

:02:55. > :03:01.has won twice. He will sit tight -- type whatever is horse is doing.

:03:01. > :03:07.Caroline Powell won here last year. She is back to defend her title at

:03:07. > :03:15.the age of 18. Newly married to Mike Tindall, who was away at the

:03:15. > :03:19.World Cup, Zara Phillips is back busy building a new relationship

:03:19. > :03:23.with A high Kingdom. The leading Australian challenger is Sam

:03:23. > :03:29.Griffiths. He will be first out onto the cross-country course on

:03:29. > :03:33.Happy Times. Gorgeous conditions here for the first day of

:03:34. > :03:37.competition. The gates opened at 7:30am her and the eventing

:03:37. > :03:42.aficionados have made sure everybody can watch the dressage,

:03:42. > :03:49.because this is what needs control and precision. You cannot win the

:03:49. > :03:57.competition here, but you can lose it, because without precision, you

:03:57. > :04:05.can lose points. Let's round-up the dressage action. With the recent

:04:05. > :04:12.European championship success, this event is clearly going -- growing

:04:12. > :04:22.in popularity. This, the first of two rides, set the early score of

:04:22. > :04:38.

:04:39. > :04:46.Fox-Pitt raised the bar with a polished performance. Ireland's

:04:46. > :04:50.Elizabeth is one of the first third time is at Burghley. A score of

:04:50. > :04:56.33.3, putting them just three points behind wallet -- William

:04:56. > :05:01.Fox-Pitt. A lovely horse and he gave me his best work. You cannot

:05:01. > :05:07.always expect that so there was a great feeling. To be ahead on day

:05:07. > :05:12.one is very exciting at this stage. Despite the attraction of

:05:12. > :05:18.Burghley's 400 shops, the Arena was the place to be on day two, which

:05:18. > :05:23.began with an impressive Test from Germany. A great start for this

:05:23. > :05:30.partnership, looking to achieve the Olympic qualification. Their score

:05:30. > :05:35.has taken them to the top of the table, at 39.3. Zara Phillips

:05:35. > :05:39.seemed satisfied. Not so, her father, clearly concerned with the

:05:39. > :05:45.position of her hat! Andrew Nicholson produced an even better

:05:45. > :05:49.test on his horse. Both of his rides are now in the top five.

:05:49. > :05:58.Despite an error flagged up by the judges, the defending champions,

:05:58. > :06:03.Caroline Powell and Lenamore, finished only three points off the

:06:03. > :06:13.lead. And Mary King, aged Burghley favourite, up the ante with at

:06:13. > :06:20.

:06:20. > :06:26.King's Temptress. Fewer than 10 points were separating the top 20.

:06:26. > :06:33.I am really happy. My horse had three a good paces and transitions,

:06:33. > :06:41.so we have done a good job. I am happy I am in first place. It is a

:06:41. > :06:47.beautiful horse and he has a very good Sash competition. So, she

:06:47. > :06:52.leads on Free Easy NRW. And Mary King on King's Temptress. Very good

:06:52. > :06:58.scores for Andrew Nicholson on both of his horses. Zara Phillips will

:06:58. > :07:02.be thrilled with high Kingdom. At the age of 50, Mary King has

:07:02. > :07:06.achieved pretty much everything. She has represented Great Britain

:07:06. > :07:11.five times at the Olympic Games and won medals at the European Eventing

:07:11. > :07:21.Championships. She has won Badminton and Burghley. And she has

:07:21. > :07:22.

:07:22. > :07:27.finished second in Kentucky. This I first got interested in horses

:07:28. > :07:33.when I was a very young girl. I have always, ever since I can first

:07:33. > :07:38.remember, been mad about them. I am one of these pony-Bad girls,

:07:38. > :07:43.desperate to have one of my own! But I was in a situation where it

:07:43. > :07:51.was not possible to have my own. As a family, we lived in a rented

:07:51. > :07:56.cottage. It was in the village of Salcombe Regis, in Devon. My father

:07:56. > :08:02.had been sent out of the Royal Navy because he became an invalid. I

:08:02. > :08:07.used to go and visit the vicar's house whenever I had spare time. If

:08:07. > :08:12.mum wondered where I was, I was normally in the field with them. I

:08:12. > :08:17.persuaded the vicar if I could possibly ride his horses. Her as I

:08:17. > :08:22.grew older, I became a member of the local pony club. I went off and

:08:22. > :08:26.rode bicycles, cycling around, looking for ponies in fields,

:08:26. > :08:31.finding out who owned them and whether I could ride him. I must

:08:31. > :08:37.have been a pest! I left school as soon as I could and went and worked

:08:37. > :08:44.for a lady called Sheila Willcox, who had been a top event rider in

:08:44. > :08:49.had. That was the first successful female rider in the sport. Looking

:08:49. > :08:55.back, I would not be where I am now and have got to the heights that I

:08:55. > :08:59.have got to without having spent that time in her yard. It was a

:08:59. > :09:03.fantastic experience. Jolly hard work at the time! After my

:09:03. > :09:10.travelling, I came back to Salcombe Regis and said, I really want to be

:09:10. > :09:14.an event rider. My parents said, how? We have got no money and no

:09:14. > :09:24.land. I had a bit of money put away from the Pony I had sold. Things

:09:24. > :09:24.

:09:24. > :09:29.then went my way. This yard was a disused farm yard. There were some

:09:29. > :09:34.pigs in the bar but the rest was fairly disused and was full of

:09:34. > :09:41.brambles and nettles. I approached the Farah and asked if I could make

:09:41. > :09:48.a couple of the cowsheds into stables and rent them from him. --

:09:48. > :09:54.I approached the farmer. Eventually, it came up for sale, so I made a

:09:54. > :09:59.huge decision to buy it to fund all of that. I used to do a butcher's

:09:59. > :10:03.delivery round. I did that twice a week for three ideas. I used to

:10:03. > :10:11.clean the campsite toilet seat and had a couple of gardening jobs in

:10:11. > :10:15.Sidmouth. I used to go fruit- picking at the fruit farm. That was

:10:15. > :10:20.during the fruit-picking season. I did not mind. I was paid and that

:10:20. > :10:30.helped me by the set of shoes for the waltzes and the entry fee, and

:10:30. > :10:31.

:10:31. > :10:37.that sort of thing. I ended up riding in the dark sometimes! My

:10:37. > :10:42.first ever of horse took me to my Badminton horse trials in 1985. I

:10:42. > :10:48.was offered a good price for him when he was at intermediate level.

:10:48. > :10:52.I then said to the people, no, I would rather be famous and rich. I

:10:52. > :10:57.have known these people still to this day and they tease me about

:10:57. > :11:07.that comment. But it was good. He is the horse that got me to

:11:07. > :11:08.

:11:08. > :11:13.Badminton and that is where my career went on from. Mary King is

:11:13. > :11:18.riding two horses here. Let's have a look at the cross country course.

:11:18. > :11:24.They have got 11 and a half minutes to jump pit. It is big and has a

:11:24. > :11:28.slight retro feel in a honour of the 50th anniversary. By that, I

:11:28. > :11:38.mean Captain Mark Phillips has gone for lots of timber, high fences and

:11:38. > :11:43.

:11:43. > :11:50.spreads, and then there is more to, as the riders reach the Land Rover

:11:50. > :11:54.drought hatchery. And here, the course designer has gone for

:11:54. > :12:00.something different. What does his daughter think of it? If this is

:12:00. > :12:05.the first time he has done it. What do you think? You never know until

:12:05. > :12:11.you get there. My horse is a good jumper and a good cross-country so

:12:11. > :12:17.I hope he will answer all questions. With his friends, it has changed

:12:17. > :12:22.from last year. More of an accuracy jumper in the water, but also

:12:23. > :12:29.needing a good shot in so you can get across from one to the other in

:12:29. > :12:37.one stride. Once you are in, I think you will be OK to come out.

:12:37. > :12:41.But try and ignore the water a bit. Is your horse OK with water? Yes,

:12:41. > :12:46.he has been good with water, so I think, ignore the water a bit and

:12:46. > :12:52.concentrate on keeping a straight line and getting in. Then we come

:12:52. > :12:58.out, turn right and go up the hill. And that is a hop over the Waterloo

:12:58. > :13:04.logs at Number 12 and then onto the HSBC Holdings branch, where I met

:13:04. > :13:09.William Fox-Pitt. The riders are always keep an eye on their watches

:13:09. > :13:14.as they grow on a cross-country course. This is about halfway?

:13:14. > :13:17.and you have a whole minute of galloping in a small area. The

:13:18. > :13:24.riders are going to be aware of keeping their foot down and not

:13:24. > :13:29.wasting any time. So you come sweeping round? Why is this

:13:29. > :13:34.difficult? Well, you have got quite an easy house but it is on a mound

:13:34. > :13:40.and then down to a very decent right-angled corner. The issue here

:13:40. > :13:44.is, you never know how some will jump over it. You do not know how

:13:44. > :13:49.your striding is going to work out on the landing side. Because you

:13:49. > :13:54.have got these undulations to worry about? Yes. Some will act like it

:13:54. > :13:59.is on the flat but some will prop a bit. What you are hoping for is a

:13:59. > :14:02.nice for with four strides down to this corner. And at this level,

:14:02. > :14:07.there was there no more should be seen the flags and seen that that

:14:07. > :14:13.is a jump. They don't have time to see how a queued that angle is.

:14:13. > :14:20.They just lock on an jumper it well. You have got another big effort

:14:20. > :14:23.over there. Quite a tight turn. Quite tiring for the horse. What

:14:23. > :14:29.riders will be hoping for is that this is all very smooth, so you

:14:29. > :14:34.don't use up so much energy. Then it is a triple rail over a ditch

:14:34. > :14:38.and down to fence the 17, before the Land Rover dairy farm. The

:14:38. > :14:41.riders will be watching this guy, because Sam Griffiths of Australia

:14:41. > :14:47.is the very first out on the course, and they want to see you jumping

:14:47. > :14:52.through this well? This is a jump I am going to be really positive at.

:14:52. > :14:57.We are a little further round than halfway so hopefully the horses

:14:57. > :15:02.will be going well. I will try to get a positive jump up the bank.

:15:02. > :15:06.What I am looking to do is jump up as far as they can, so when I get

:15:06. > :15:11.on to the second part of the Bank, but horse does not have too much

:15:12. > :15:16.work to do. I will be looking for another really positive jump up

:15:16. > :15:21.here so I am not too for a away from the third element. For horse,

:15:21. > :15:27.as he lands, he has to take off, and to do that, you need a very

:15:27. > :15:33.strong horse. Then, you cannot go to sleep, because we have fence No.

:15:33. > :15:39.19, which is on a related number of curved it strikes. You still need

:15:39. > :15:43.to ride out over the last element. The biggest fence on the course is

:15:43. > :15:50.fence No. 21. A couple of bedspreads after that and then the

:15:50. > :16:00.final water. In a honour of Burghley's 50th anniversary, Mark

:16:00. > :16:07.

:16:07. > :16:12.Phillips has built three new fences. the water and into the island. It

:16:12. > :16:21.is quite difficult. Mackin to the water again to the last part which

:16:21. > :16:29.is an offset -- which is offset. So quite a difficult combination.

:16:29. > :16:38.in its own right is big. The last brick, the boaters on an ankle.

:16:38. > :16:46.is very easy to run out at the Ind. -- the end. You need to be focused.

:16:46. > :16:52.Then, Jubilee Leap and then fence 33, the last of 345 demanding

:16:52. > :17:02.jumping efforts. That is what they have ahead of them. Let's see how

:17:02. > :17:13.

:17:13. > :17:21.who has got a very good record here at Burghley. A horse that has got a

:17:21. > :17:29.good record here and at Badminton. Fence four, the right hand over the

:17:29. > :17:36.big drop. Much quicker than the red route but probably the riders will

:17:36. > :17:42.choose that option. The optimal time, 11 minutes. It is longer than

:17:42. > :17:52.normal. This is the direct route. He's got to sit up quickly and get

:17:52. > :17:54.

:17:54. > :17:58.a good shot at that. Now, the older type fence. An elephant trap. It

:17:58. > :18:05.should be a bit of a let-out for these horses because they are so

:18:05. > :18:13.experienced at this stage. Now, Discovery Valley. Over a ditch,

:18:13. > :18:23.bounce of the Bank, over the brush, coming back to an angled rail to

:18:23. > :18:26.

:18:26. > :18:30.the ditch. Old fashioned coffin type. Sam going for a quick route.

:18:30. > :18:39.They hit the rising ground for the Tate got so it will be interesting

:18:39. > :18:46.to see how the horse copes. There should be one stride in there. That

:18:46. > :18:52.ditch is on an angle so that can happen. Now, through the water the

:18:52. > :19:02.first time with a narrow spread brush out, around the house and

:19:02. > :19:17.

:19:17. > :19:24.back into what is a difficult test cascade. I thought this fall

:19:24. > :19:28.struggle but he made it look easy. He got third to make years ago.

:19:28. > :19:31.Then his first Championship in Kentucky. Unlucky in many respects

:19:31. > :19:39.but learned from it and come back and very much challenging for

:19:39. > :19:43.position. Relatively straightforward, the first part of

:19:43. > :19:50.this one. This is the big problem. The horse is going to have to stand

:19:50. > :20:00.off the water, but he didn't understand it, and chipped in an

:20:00. > :20:01.

:20:01. > :20:11.extra stride. No, the man that won in 2009. He has two rides. He

:20:11. > :20:22.

:20:22. > :20:29.a sequence of fences. The horses have been on a good gallop and they

:20:29. > :20:33.are doing this big circle suddenly. That I recruit, the let - Madeline,

:20:33. > :20:39.an incredibly tight corner and an amazing angle. Some of the horses

:20:39. > :20:45.will do that on a curving five rather than a direct four. The long

:20:45. > :20:54.route is very, very long. I don't think this horse will be going the

:20:54. > :21:00.long route. He is on a score of 45.5. He is good on the clock. He

:21:00. > :21:08.is just under what we anticipate the time should be at that stage of

:21:08. > :21:15.the course. Now this undulating ground and that it beat corner. --

:21:15. > :21:23.and that beat corner. The riders are concerned the circle might

:21:23. > :21:27.distract the horses. A lot of jumping to do there. Good to see

:21:27. > :21:35.the fence is road so well. That will give confidence to the rest of

:21:35. > :21:41.the riders. He seems to be setting a good gallop. The whole course is

:21:41. > :21:46.open and you can gallop. Big spreads, maximum dimensions. Two

:21:46. > :21:56.strides, there, quite a sharp corner up, but the riders like this

:21:56. > :22:03.new change. Now, Oliver Townend. They don't need to jump too far up

:22:03. > :22:12.the bank. Now the rails to that angled ditch. That is safely away.

:22:12. > :22:17.He seems to be gaining in confidence, the French bred. The

:22:17. > :22:27.red route, it is a long way up the Derry round. The sequence of

:22:27. > :22:34.bouncers, then a wake up to the top end of this course. Over 600 metres

:22:34. > :22:41.of his early to rain. The long route is very, very long. Sam

:22:41. > :22:45.Griffiths coming to the dairy mound with happy times. So important they

:22:45. > :22:55.get a good stride because the horse has to keep the energy over the

:22:55. > :22:57.

:22:57. > :23:07.double bound and then the angled fence. The two brochures. He gets

:23:07. > :23:30.

:23:30. > :23:37.one stride. It is either a long one Attacking two Kim Hye-Ja corner,

:23:37. > :23:42.giving the horse a lot of confidence. This is an enormous

:23:42. > :23:50.fence! I have never seen a bigger fence on a course. They make it

:23:50. > :23:56.look easy. Oliver Townend was third here. Unlucky happenings in

:23:56. > :24:05.Kentucky last year. Can they cemented at Burghley? 50,000 first

:24:05. > :24:13.prize... One of the tops has gone. It was a wooden one. Still seems

:24:13. > :24:23.full of run as he gets to the end. It is a new fence. The horse pops

:24:23. > :24:42.

:24:42. > :24:52.in quietly, slightly drags himself Oliver coming up to the Dairy

:24:52. > :24:52.

:24:52. > :25:02.cattle are to mount. A nice balance. Pushers for the long one. Doesn't

:25:02. > :25:04.

:25:04. > :25:11.quite get there. The horse catches his leg. And that is a retirement.

:25:11. > :25:18.He has not had a good season so far. Now, a man in good form. How close

:25:18. > :25:24.is he to that optimum time? 11 minutes 40 seconds. He is going to

:25:24. > :25:30.be well in. He is 15 seconds still to get there. Such an impressive

:25:31. > :25:34.fright. An impressively good horse, and sounded a good job. Being a

:25:34. > :25:41.trailblazer on a new track like this is never easy, but sometimes

:25:41. > :25:50.you don't have other people's problems to worry about. Well done.

:25:50. > :26:00.Just missing out on that time. He is the one to catch. Now, the Kiwi.

:26:00. > :26:13.

:26:13. > :26:19.50 years old this year but riding How did it right? As we expected it.

:26:19. > :26:24.There are some massive fences, but we have got for scope, my horse,

:26:24. > :26:34.and I ecstatic with the. The time is going to be tight, isn't it?

:26:34. > :26:45.

:26:46. > :26:55.think so. I lost it in the middle of pace. He angled that brush. He

:26:56. > :27:04.

:27:04. > :27:14.horse. He has won this twice. Now, around the corner. What will he do?

:27:14. > :27:14.

:27:14. > :27:18.I was so impressed with the Leaf Pit. He took the look in. He holds

:27:18. > :27:24.them together. A very sensible move. He made it look pretty

:27:24. > :27:34.straightforward. Now the dressage leader. The man that has won the

:27:34. > :27:38.

:27:38. > :27:48.title on five occasions. It is now Zealand-bred horse. What can he do

:27:48. > :27:59.

:27:59. > :28:05.times in the corners. I would imagine he will probably put a

:28:05. > :28:10.turning, bending line in. No one more experienced than and drew on a

:28:10. > :28:20.cross country course. I am wrong. He takes a direct line. He makes it

:28:20. > :28:20.

:28:20. > :28:30.look great. A man on fire. He won at heart Prix. He has been in

:28:30. > :28:32.

:28:32. > :28:37.flying form. This man, William Fox- Pitt at Leaf Pit. He sits so tight.

:28:37. > :28:44.He gets the balance to jump out over the narrow. You just never

:28:44. > :28:54.know how young horses will job of this Leaf Pit. An uncomfortable

:28:54. > :28:59.jump will distract them, so some will go for the alternative. An

:28:59. > :29:09.effort at the top. But he'd like Oliver Townend got a good one for

:29:09. > :29:19.

:29:19. > :29:24.lengthens his stride. He is very quickly around the corner. The time

:29:24. > :29:29.is tight. They have got to achieve 570 metres per minute throughout

:29:29. > :29:38.the course. With all of these undulations, big jumping tests,

:29:38. > :29:42.that is going to be difficult to get. It will be interesting to see

:29:42. > :29:52.whether the Leaf Pit has affected this horse. Now would be the time

:29:52. > :29:53.

:29:53. > :30:01.to find out. Absolutely no problem. Super. So, a way he goes. We now

:30:01. > :30:09.see Nicholson beginning to up the pace. It is an enormous fence.

:30:09. > :30:17.William Fox-Pitt, now at the Maltings. He has achieved so much

:30:17. > :30:21.international three-day events. The one he wants is the Olympic Games.

:30:21. > :30:24.Michael Young, by winning that European title last week, that is

:30:24. > :30:34.the one that William has got to beat if he is going to win the

:30:34. > :30:43.

:30:43. > :30:47.Olympic gold. Could this be the He is a very good young horse.

:30:47. > :30:57.Looking at this, this could be knocking at the door as well for

:30:57. > :30:57.

:30:57. > :31:03.next year. Yes, and the crucial bit about that is getting close to the

:31:03. > :31:09.favourites in the dressage. But let's watch the cross country now,

:31:09. > :31:16.because that is where the action is. There's the great spires of the

:31:16. > :31:23.Burghley house. Talking about the dressage, William was one of the

:31:23. > :31:28.many senior riders who managed to have an error of course, so to get

:31:28. > :31:35.39 with this horse is showing a lot of potential. And how easy was that

:31:35. > :31:45.for him? Class riding from the world's number one. And we are back

:31:45. > :31:50.

:31:50. > :31:54.to Nicholson. Now he comes to this new water. That was very impressive.

:31:54. > :32:02.Positive riding. The big jump in the middle of the island there, we

:32:02. > :32:12.have seen a couple of animals scramble over it but Avebury did

:32:12. > :32:17.not touch a twig through that. Kiwi is in tremendous form. William

:32:17. > :32:24.Fox-Pitt is over and he makes it look very comfortable, very easy.

:32:24. > :32:28.But here now is Andrew Nicholson, flying for home. This man just one

:32:28. > :32:33.a week ago have the most crushing fall of his life. He has got bumps

:32:33. > :32:43.and bruises all over him but he comes in and it is the first inside

:32:43. > :32:44.

:32:44. > :32:49.of triumph. He goes top of the leaderboard at 42.8. And now

:32:49. > :32:56.William at the final water. Yes, he jumps well. The big fence on the

:32:56. > :33:00.island. Very impressive. William has to be thrilled with his horse

:33:00. > :33:07.because it has just grown in stature. Look at the concentration

:33:07. > :33:13.on the horse's face. Now into the arena, these three hurdles. A lot

:33:13. > :33:17.of the experts feel that there's a lot of galloping on this course and

:33:17. > :33:23.the forces might get tired. But this horse has just nipped through

:33:23. > :33:30.without losing any time. CLARE BALDING: You ride pretty well

:33:30. > :33:38.with one hand, I would say! Show us what you have done. I was riding

:33:38. > :33:46.with two! It was pretty black and bruised there. This was very

:33:46. > :33:50.swollen. But it is pretty good now. How did he feel? Very good. I just

:33:50. > :33:54.upped the pace because I wanted to do the first half a little behind

:33:54. > :34:00.the clock, because every time I have had a run-out with him is when

:34:00. > :34:07.he is doing things very easily. So I thought if I started a bit slow

:34:07. > :34:12.and get faster and faster... But that was at nine minutes so maybe I

:34:12. > :34:18.left it too late. COMMENTATOR: here is William Fox-

:34:18. > :34:23.Pitt, coming home. That was not the best of shops for Williams. But

:34:23. > :34:32.this is a round that might give us even more strength and depth or

:34:32. > :34:42.stop -- not have the best of shots. CLARE BALDING: Let's have a look at

:34:42. > :34:42.

:34:42. > :34:47.the leaderboard at this early stage. Let's hear from the leader. There's

:34:47. > :34:52.some interesting moments out there? Compared to last week, it was a

:34:52. > :34:59.piece of cake! Nothing to my moment at the Europeans but I am thrilled

:34:59. > :35:05.with him. He started off green and jumped off belief pit and jumped

:35:05. > :35:12.the skinny. What a horse! Very exciting for the future and for

:35:12. > :35:16.this competition? Dressage was magic. Much better than I thought.

:35:16. > :35:22.I thought I would have my work cut out when you are riding a

:35:23. > :35:26.thoroughbred like that, you let him go. Even better running. If it is

:35:27. > :35:31.all very well smiling, waving to the crowd and looking like you are

:35:31. > :35:38.enjoying yourself, but the thing that keeps Mary King going is an

:35:38. > :35:48.unbelievable decide to stay at the top of the sport. -- unbelievable

:35:48. > :35:51.

:35:52. > :35:55.Obviously, it is riding, getting in that British team. That is

:35:55. > :36:00.something that as a younger person I was dying to get good enough to

:36:00. > :36:07.be selected to ride at a championship event. And that happen

:36:07. > :36:11.to be first in 1991 when I went to the European Championships. At

:36:11. > :36:16.actually won my first ever team gold medal but I did it in bad

:36:16. > :36:19.style! Because I ended up falling in the water. That was at the end

:36:19. > :36:24.of the cross country course. That was a very special stepping-stone

:36:24. > :36:30.in my career. Times have moved on hugely within the sport since I

:36:30. > :36:36.first began. It is a very different sport from those early days. It

:36:36. > :36:42.used to be that long format, the three-day event. It is now a short

:36:42. > :36:48.format so it is a different endurance test on back middled. The

:36:48. > :36:52.dressage has got to a way higher standard than it used to be. We are

:36:52. > :36:57.jumping higher courses now. The whole sport has become more and

:36:57. > :37:01.more professional. And all the other riders have as well.

:37:01. > :37:05.Everybody is improving all the time. So what was making sure I was

:37:05. > :37:09.keeping up with the Times, not just carrying on in the same when I had

:37:09. > :37:14.when I started, which may be was good enough at the beginning to win

:37:14. > :37:21.events, but as time went on, I had to up my game to keep up with

:37:21. > :37:26.everybody else. So, yes, even now, even at my ripe old age, I am still

:37:26. > :37:31.having to train regularly. I go to my dressage trainers and show

:37:31. > :37:36.jumping trainers. People say to me, do you still need to have lessons?

:37:36. > :37:46.I say, gosh, I constantly need to have lessons to improve as a rider

:37:46. > :37:55.

:37:55. > :38:02.and to encourage your horse to give big 50 this year but here she is on

:38:02. > :38:11.Apache Sauce. A little bit of an angle there. Very, very slowly into

:38:11. > :38:19.that fence. A little more forward now to the half. A couple of Wales

:38:19. > :38:25.to the ditch. Just on the angle, just twisted over the brush fence.

:38:25. > :38:32.Here is the great Mark Todd, one of the great riders who has won the

:38:32. > :38:42.Burghley title on two occasions. We want to see if one can make it to

:38:42. > :38:49.

:38:49. > :38:53.six in 2011. He had a disappointing dressage score of 56.5. She rattles

:38:53. > :38:58.over that table-top, Mary King. Interesting to see whether Mary

:38:58. > :39:08.takes the straight. Apache Sauce certainly has the experience of

:39:08. > :39:08.

:39:08. > :39:17.that. Almost straight but just holds for the five and does not

:39:17. > :39:27.rush the wolf. Gives him time to understand the question. -- does

:39:27. > :39:29.

:39:29. > :39:37.not rush the horse. Here's Mark Todd. His first win back here in

:39:37. > :39:44.1987. A beautiful exhibition of how we should be done. Away quickly.

:39:44. > :39:52.The double Olympic champion, the Kiwi, Mark Todd. And now back to

:39:52. > :40:02.Mary King and Apache Sauce. Just bounces up. Waste no energy. Still

:40:02. > :40:05.

:40:05. > :40:10.galloping up that hill. Mark Todd is a tall man. He won Badminton and

:40:10. > :40:17.then took out of action. A lot of power in the locker room at the

:40:17. > :40:24.moment with the Olympics coming up, but this possibly one. Look at the

:40:24. > :40:30.crowd. Burghley is as popular as ever, as he now comes to one of the

:40:30. > :40:40.great offences that has been here ever since it started in 61. Now he

:40:40. > :40:40.

:40:40. > :40:50.comes to the two brushes. Whoa! He's certainly attacks it but the

:40:50. > :40:51.

:40:52. > :40:59.horse says, come on, let me go. Maybe not the right side of the

:40:59. > :41:08.fence. Apache Sauce makes nothing of that. He does jump to the right

:41:08. > :41:13.of that. You would not say this was Mark's typical horse, would you? It

:41:13. > :41:20.is much bigger and rain here than he normally rides. But so far it is

:41:20. > :41:25.coming up with all the answers. I would be fascinated to know what

:41:25. > :41:30.the judges decide and whether you would be penalised for that last

:41:30. > :41:33.jump. It is interesting that the control have let him go on because

:41:33. > :41:40.they're obviously not convinced he went the wrong side, so they have

:41:41. > :41:47.allowed him to continue. Now I have a halfway on the course, Mark Todd.

:41:47. > :41:55.The final water now for Apache Sauce. It is interesting, that

:41:56. > :42:04.fence on the island, because they jump up hill and then Lansdown Hill,

:42:04. > :42:10.so the horses have do jump down hill a bit. -- may then it land

:42:10. > :42:16.downhill. The determination of Mary King is an example to any young

:42:16. > :42:20.event rider, and her skill level has gone up and up. Apache Sauce

:42:20. > :42:30.has never been the easiest of dressage horses, but now completing

:42:30. > :42:31.

:42:31. > :42:35.some good tests. Here's a man on the upgrade. Tom Mcewen it. He was

:42:35. > :42:43.part of the Under 21 riders. He did not win the middle but he finished

:42:43. > :42:51.4th individually on this course, Dry Old Party. -- on this horse,

:42:51. > :43:01.Dry Old Party. Mary King has lost the Silk off higher at! She is

:43:01. > :43:08.

:43:08. > :43:13.blind to that finish, though. -- she lost the Silcott off her hat.

:43:13. > :43:17.Mark Todd has got such a great position and when he says go, the

:43:17. > :43:24.horses normally do. A great lesson for youngsters to learn, the way

:43:24. > :43:34.Mark picked there was a more up and rode it forward to the next job. --

:43:34. > :43:36.

:43:36. > :43:46.picked the horse up. This 20-year- old, he has got a lot of help from

:43:46. > :43:47.

:43:47. > :43:57.Rodney Powell. This is an ex- racehorse. A horse he picked up as

:43:57. > :43:59.

:43:59. > :44:04.a result of his visit at another race. He is not letting this race

:44:04. > :44:14.get to him. Also good there was that he reacted instinctively to

:44:14. > :44:18.keep a horse straight. Still no decision on whether Mark went the

:44:18. > :44:24.wrong side but he is at the last and he is going to have a great

:44:24. > :44:34.time. He will just have to wait five seconds. He will only get two

:44:34. > :44:34.

:44:34. > :44:43.time faults. But will he get more? I don't think he will. Now we have

:44:43. > :44:49.buoyed Martin and Neville Bardos. - - Boyd Martin. This is an

:44:49. > :44:58.Australian-turned-American. CLARE BALDING: Just talk me through

:44:58. > :45:02.what happened at the hatchery? saw a good jump but he half jumped

:45:02. > :45:07.over the second bit and I saw the red flag go down my right side, so

:45:07. > :45:17.I thought, at least we have gone through the flag, so we kicked on.

:45:17. > :45:18.

:45:18. > :45:26.I listen to hear, to see if I could hear anything over the commentary.

:45:26. > :45:35.But it seemed OK. This was the last horse out. Clear over the role next

:45:35. > :45:43.turn. Tom Mcewen is coming now to the Cottesmore Lead. Not the best.

:45:44. > :45:53.A bit of an awkward jump but Tom Mcewen gives him a bit of a wake-up

:45:54. > :45:57.

:45:57. > :46:03.call. This is Elizabeth Power. father is a great show jumper. Both

:46:03. > :46:08.her mum and brother are Badminton riders. What a round Tom Mcewen has

:46:08. > :46:14.given this horse. This is their man we are going to hear a lot more

:46:14. > :46:24.about. His mum also did a lot of show jumping. The man has got some

:46:24. > :46:34.

:46:34. > :46:38.went to provenance in Badminton on this very halls. -- on this very

:46:38. > :46:43.horse. She has learned from the European Championships. She had a

:46:43. > :46:48.fall at Badminton, quite a nasty one, but was left out of the Irish

:46:48. > :46:53.team, but she has come here determined to show how good she is.

:46:53. > :46:58.She is doing a good job. Sometimes in the past they have looked fast

:46:58. > :47:04.and slightly Willie in cross- country, but she has really held it

:47:04. > :47:12.together. She is keeping the horse balanced. Chipping in with two

:47:12. > :47:18.strides. But riding very well. coming for home, it is the dry old

:47:18. > :47:21.party of Tom McEwan, 20-year-old. The owner of whistles will be

:47:21. > :47:31.delighted because they rarely have... What has he done? He has

:47:31. > :47:36.thrown the stick away in sheer joy, actually. Who can blame him? The

:47:36. > :47:40.Irish, one of the teams are yet to qualify for the Olympic Games. They

:47:40. > :47:44.need to get enough riders with sufficient qualifications to get a

:47:44. > :47:50.grip together and call at 18. You'd think this lady would be one of

:47:50. > :48:00.those. I'd be pretty sure she could be one of those. The Irish are

:48:00. > :48:06.

:48:06. > :48:10.riders to qualify to put together a team, but only time will tell.

:48:10. > :48:20.Martin, coming down to the water. There was discussion about this

:48:20. > :48:24.

:48:24. > :48:28.anchorman for the Americans. He can do it again.

:48:28. > :48:31.Well done. You must have learned with every stride because it is

:48:31. > :48:40.your first time here. A need to get stronger in the gym because I am

:48:40. > :48:44.knackered. He is so fast. He is ever for racehorse. He just ate it

:48:44. > :48:51.up. We are behind, but we will catch it up with him. He goes and

:48:51. > :48:54.goes and goes. You are 5th. What about show jumping? I will let you

:48:54. > :49:04.know tomorrow. Here is another star that has come

:49:04. > :49:06.

:49:06. > :49:10.back having retired. It is Blyth Tait. In 2004, he was the double

:49:10. > :49:14.world champion. The Kiwis did not want to miss out on the action.

:49:14. > :49:19.is great to see him back. He is determined to try to get to London

:49:19. > :49:23.next year. There are so many good Kiwi riders coming up and

:49:23. > :49:29.threatening, so he will have to put up a good performance here, if he

:49:29. > :49:39.wants to secure that plays. He he is riding as well as ever. Always

:49:39. > :49:48.

:49:48. > :49:55.stylish, always keeping his horse this is the point of change for his

:49:56. > :50:01.luck. He is inside the time. He now goes into 6th place. Those scores

:50:01. > :50:08.are getting close. Coming to the water at the end and looking quite

:50:08. > :50:14.strong. Elizabeth, keeping it together. Getting a little revved

:50:14. > :50:21.up in the water. 7th place after dressage. A good spread with those

:50:21. > :50:26.leaders. She is showing a lot of maturity in her riding.

:50:26. > :50:30.certainly is. This is another X- rays horse. He won a number of

:50:30. > :50:40.times. She is flying into the arena. She could be close to the time as

:50:40. > :50:45.

:50:45. > :50:55.well. This X-ray her -- X-rays was, he is doing well. He is a very good

:50:55. > :50:55.

:50:55. > :50:59.example of an old racehorse. Back to the evergreen Blyth Tait. And

:50:59. > :51:09.his New Zealand-bred horse. He bought it from one of his students,

:51:09. > :51:16.

:51:16. > :51:25.actually. Here it is Elizabeth is six seconds over but 45.7 puts

:51:25. > :51:35.her in third place. She is in touch. Blyth Tait trying to do what Mark

:51:35. > :51:37.

:51:37. > :51:42.Todd did, to come back for the Olympics. What can he do? I am not

:51:42. > :51:47.quite sure what he was doing there. He was trying to add his stride.

:51:47. > :51:51.The horse wasn't focused. Didn't know what he was being asked to do.

:51:51. > :51:59.Sadly, a retirement for blighted. He does not feature on this

:51:59. > :52:04.leaderboard. Elizabeth Power comes into third. The same story for Mary

:52:04. > :52:07.King. A great round for Tom McEwan. They were clear inside the time. So

:52:07. > :52:17.many of this crowd come to see their favourite riders and among

:52:17. > :52:23.

:52:23. > :52:27.Yes, I became involved in the breeding side of event horses

:52:27. > :52:34.through a horrid accident. I had a mare that I was eventing for an

:52:34. > :52:38.owner, a beautiful young mare, who, sadly, in the field struck into her

:52:38. > :52:45.tendon and her career came to an end. I didn't know anything about

:52:45. > :52:55.breeding but she was a very good mare. I used successful stallions,

:52:55. > :52:59.fashionable stallions. And I had been very fortunate that the

:52:59. > :53:09.breeding has gone well, which is why have been able to build this

:53:09. > :53:10.

:53:10. > :53:14.house, it has given me the money to do that. The first three foals were

:53:14. > :53:20.fillies. I thought, oh dear, I've read all these girls, I've got to

:53:20. > :53:29.get used to riding mares. But all of them have progressed up to four-

:53:29. > :53:38.star level, which is amazing to think that. I have still got King's

:53:38. > :53:46.temptress in my yard, and she is one of my top horses. Freddie, my

:53:46. > :53:52.son, who does not like horses. -- and my daughter who does like

:53:52. > :54:02.courses, he was asking, when we you give up? That was when they

:54:02. > :54:08.announced that Rio de Janeiro was going to have a bit in the Olympics.

:54:08. > :54:13.So he wanted me to go to Rio. Because of the football in Brazil.

:54:13. > :54:22.I will see. Emily was saying, it would be great for you to continue

:54:22. > :54:28.because she wants to be the first mother and daughter team. There is

:54:28. > :54:31.no other rider at that has done six Olympic Games, either. The other

:54:31. > :54:35.reason is I have managed to win a silver and bronze medal, but there

:54:35. > :54:43.is one missing, and it would be amazing to be able to complete that

:58:40. > :58:48.fall did not fancy that amount. A horrible fall for this horse. The

:58:48. > :58:53.American was all right, so, too, was the horse. Pippa Funnell has

:58:53. > :58:58.won here in the past, but she had a very hard working round on pure

:58:58. > :59:03.addiction. She had used all her powers of persuasion to make the

:59:03. > :59:09.11-year-old jump the final section of the course. It didn't look

:59:20. > :59:27.just before the Leaf Pit. Zara Phillips, she is next away.

:59:27. > :59:34.And there is the Princess Royal, who won here in 1971. We join one

:59:34. > :59:40.of the young talents of America now. Third in the Rolex Kentucky event,

:00:10. > :00:20.dressage, 46.0. One of the O'Connor competition abroad. This is Zara

:00:20. > :00:26.Phillips coming to the Leaf Pit. She looks very impressive off that

:01:01. > :01:11.

:01:11. > :01:17.second ride. This is Nereo. Remember, he is already in the top

:01:17. > :01:24.five. Beautifully through the Leaf Pit. Is likely alternative route

:01:24. > :01:34.but it has lost him very little time. -- a slightly alternative

:01:34. > :01:40.

:01:40. > :01:45.route. Beautifully over the cascade fences of Zara Phillips. Sinead

:01:45. > :01:50.comes to the final water crossing on the lake. A very talented young

:01:50. > :01:56.rider. The Americans will be very excited by having her as a

:01:56. > :02:02.potential team member in London next year. There is such thing as a

:02:02. > :02:08.London tight and this could be one of them, as we rejoin High Kingdom.

:02:08. > :02:16.And could this be another one? The horse that took Zara Phillips from

:02:16. > :02:22.Pony Club in a very short period of time to being world champion. This

:02:22. > :02:27.horse, now, she really pins her hopes on. Could it be London? As we

:02:27. > :02:31.said at the outset, this is a real test for the combination. They

:02:31. > :02:37.looked promising before but this now, the true acid test of both

:02:37. > :02:46.horse and rider. They were very impressive staying on bat straight

:02:46. > :02:52.line to the corner. High Kingdom and Zara Phillips might be exciting

:02:52. > :02:57.in the making, but this is a combination that is definitely made.

:02:57. > :03:04.Andrew Nicholson and Nereo. Could he make it yet another major this

:03:04. > :03:09.autumn here at Burghley? There you see exactly why years one of the

:03:09. > :03:15.very best ever at going cross- country. Coming to the final fence

:03:15. > :03:19.for Sinead for a miracle. And she is kicking on. Just doesn't quite

:03:19. > :03:27.get there inside the time but she will be thrilled. Her first

:03:27. > :03:37.overseas venture, and what a performance. Hiking boom, up at the

:03:37. > :03:38.

:03:38. > :03:45.Cottesmore Leap. -- Hyde Kingdom. Will he fly this? Makes a pretty

:03:45. > :03:54.tidy effort. And we are back now with near road. The wonderful horse

:03:54. > :04:04.of Barbara sellers. He was at the British championship. This final

:04:04. > :04:04.

:04:04. > :04:09.water complex or -- for Zara Phillips and High Kingdom. He looks

:04:09. > :04:18.full of running. They will need quick thinking on their feet for

:04:18. > :04:28.London. Could this be one of them? A horse who can run up and down,

:04:28. > :04:30.

:04:30. > :04:35.shot. We now see the man who is up to the world number one. William

:04:36. > :04:41.has got a lot of young, athletic horses but it will be the case of

:04:41. > :04:47.which can be the best of all three phases for the championship. A

:04:47. > :04:51.little bit hesitant there. Yes, but we think he held it together

:04:51. > :05:01.because he knew he would not get it. Her High Kingdom at the last, and

:05:01. > :05:02.

:05:02. > :05:05.this is a very exciting moment. He will be thrilled with this horse,

:05:05. > :05:14.High Kingdom. Zara Phillips has given us a wonderful boost for

:05:14. > :05:22.London next year. And Nereo and Andrew Nicholson, over at the

:05:22. > :05:28.Cottesmore. A spectacular jump there. Zara Phillips' fans are here,

:05:28. > :05:33.and her mother will be delighted. Her Royal Highness was European

:05:33. > :05:43.champion, and so was Zara Phillips. Their careers have gone very much

:05:43. > :05:45.

:05:45. > :05:51.in parallel. He just popped that. He looks as though he is on a

:05:51. > :05:56.canter at home. He already makes it look like child's play. Look at

:05:56. > :06:06.that last new water for an era of. And another one to give it a pretty

:06:06. > :06:14.hard wrapping. Several horses have begun to look tired in this part of

:06:14. > :06:20.the afternoon. Whether it is the heat, I am not sure. And William

:06:20. > :06:25.Fox-Pitt with Neuf day Coeurs. Still looks full of running here.

:06:25. > :06:29.It is the climb from here to the top of the hill that can take the

:06:29. > :06:39.stuffing out of the horses but William's courses will be as fit as

:06:39. > :06:39.

:06:39. > :06:46.anyone's. -- William's horses. look at bad-boy stop he is a horse

:06:46. > :06:55.that the owners had retired from international competitions. -- look

:06:55. > :07:03.Flinstar. He is good on the clock. Probably the most popular winner

:07:03. > :07:07.ever. Yes. He could be a 9 or 10- year-old, the way he went round

:07:07. > :07:14.that corner. Could they bring him back with London in mind next year?

:07:14. > :07:19.I think it is on the cards. Here's Andrew Nicholson and Nereo. He is

:07:19. > :07:24.not going to get too much inside the time, but he has showed great

:07:24. > :07:32.judgment. He goes third and has two in the top five. Watch out for

:07:32. > :07:39.Andrew Nicholson and get your money on. A great ride early on for Mary

:07:39. > :07:49.King on Apache Sauce, who is now on King's Temptress. They show all

:07:49. > :07:50.

:07:50. > :07:56.their experience and ride a perfect line. William Fox-Pitt comes over

:07:57. > :08:02.the line to the fence. Now quite a sequence of fences much closer

:08:37. > :08:45.at her watch. Gets in close and pops in the two. King's the --

:08:45. > :08:49.King's Temptress get out very quickly. William Fox-Pitt, trying

:08:49. > :08:57.to get there, but he will be slightly over the time but thrilled

:08:57. > :09:05.to be one of the two riders to have two or horses in the top 10 of this

:09:05. > :09:11.competition. Yes. Can this lady get close, though? Nobody can get ahead

:09:11. > :09:20.but it is a question of getting four penalties down. Still a lot to

:09:20. > :09:30.play for. Mary King looks good on the clock. King's Temptress, V

:09:30. > :09:38.

:09:38. > :09:43.Lexington winner, in fine style. It has only ever been done once, and

:09:43. > :09:53.that was by Pippa funnel. exciting thing here for Mary is

:09:53. > :09:54.

:09:54. > :10:01.that this is a home-bred horse. Owned by the king's mistress.

:10:01. > :10:07.Spectacular, Grade, straight line there. Here is Lenamore. He might

:10:07. > :10:14.be 18 years old, but doesn't he loved it! We have seen one or two

:10:14. > :10:19.weary horses, but this one doesn't look weary. He is still flying.

:10:19. > :10:25.jumped up to that island and was way above it. We have seen so many

:10:25. > :10:35.horses of just scrape their underbelly on that. But not

:10:35. > :10:41.

:10:41. > :10:46.Lenamore. And now powering into the arena. We have Caroline. What an

:10:46. > :10:53.asset for the Kiwis. And they are flying. They are going to trouble

:10:53. > :11:01.the leaders. Somebody else is flying. Mary King at Cottesmore.

:11:01. > :11:06.Sees a good one. Back in front of this wonderful house, and it is

:11:06. > :11:15.Lenamore. It is going to be inside the time. Can you believe it, at 18

:11:15. > :11:21.years old! What a ride, what a horse! William Fox-Pitt, and it is

:11:22. > :11:27.game on for the show jumping. Mary's got this final water

:11:27. > :11:37.complex to negotiate. King's status looks as though it is still taking

:11:37. > :11:39.

:11:39. > :11:43.a good hold down there. -- Kings Temptress. Pops over the island and

:11:43. > :11:53.just does not waste any energy over the fences. Keeps up a relentless

:11:53. > :11:56.

:11:56. > :12:00.gallop. CLARE BALDING: You are getting many

:12:00. > :12:06.congratulations from your fellow New Zealanders. How does it feel?

:12:06. > :12:11.He just feels so fantastic. He is not ready to retire. He is only

:12:11. > :12:19.five. Did she feel any pressure coming back to defend your title?

:12:19. > :12:26.did. But I thought, I can just relax and enjoy it. And everybody

:12:26. > :12:31.has been fantastic. The Kiwis. They said, just go out and enjoy it.

:12:31. > :12:38.is another great event for Mary King. Could she get closer to that

:12:38. > :12:44.Grand Slam with King's Temptress? Three seconds over so she goes

:12:44. > :12:48.forth. She, too, is within a friends of the lead. What a cross-

:12:48. > :12:56.country competition. CLARE BALDING: I spoke to Mary King

:12:56. > :13:03.after that round on King's attempts to us. -- Kings Temptress. She felt

:13:03. > :13:07.lovely. I went on a holding stride. I just chickened out on going on

:13:07. > :13:15.the real long forward and I ended up getting ever so deep. But the

:13:15. > :13:22.rest of it, I thoroughly enjoyed. And so did she. That round put Mary

:13:22. > :13:28.into 4th place. Have a look at this top 10, and you will see William,

:13:28. > :13:33.Mary and Nicholson all have horses in the top 10. It is a mixed at top

:13:33. > :13:43.20, with Americans, Germans and New Zealand thes, as well as a lot of

:13:43. > :13:46.

:13:46. > :13:50.Next year, Greenwich Park will produce a very different sort of

:13:50. > :13:57.event. They held their test event earlier this year and this is what

:13:57. > :14:01.the top competitors made of it. is going to suit quick horses that

:14:01. > :14:11.can handle themselves well and Bartok quick to turn and are quick

:14:11. > :14:11.

:14:11. > :14:18.to adjust. -- and are quick to turn. You need to be able to twist

:14:18. > :14:23.quickly. It is about snatching odd seconds off that turns. It is about

:14:23. > :14:29.thinking, where can I make up speed? It will be a serious part of

:14:29. > :14:35.the competition. It is not just about galloping. It is about having

:14:35. > :14:41.a horse that is quick off his feet. It felt like we were tearing round,

:14:41. > :14:47.so what it will feel like when we have to go at full speed, 570

:14:47. > :14:51.metres a minute, it is quite a thought. The arena is magnificent.

:14:51. > :15:01.As inventors, we were delighted with that surface and the animals

:15:01. > :15:05.operated well on that surface. Show jumping tomorrow, and we are very

:15:05. > :15:10.hopeful this service can work for all the disciplines. This does

:15:10. > :15:17.bring it to reality and it gives you more of an urge to go out there

:15:17. > :15:23.and du all you can to try and make sure you get there. Hong Kong

:15:23. > :15:26.clearly was not anywhere near Beijing. Here, you are right in the

:15:26. > :15:30.thick of it, though. A lot of people questioned whether it should

:15:30. > :15:35.be here in Greenwich, but now that the whole competition is rocking

:15:35. > :15:44.and rolling, it is going to be very exciting, even though people

:15:44. > :15:49.The other thing riders have to deal with his extreme weather conditions,

:15:49. > :15:53.which can change from three days of brilliant sunshine, to rain. It is

:15:53. > :15:59.a filthy day. It will make the show jumping even more exciting and this

:15:59. > :16:05.is what they will be aiming to do. This statue, in awe of the Marquess

:16:05. > :16:09.of Exeter. He was part of the Chariots of Fire team as well. The

:16:09. > :16:18.honoured guest presenting the prizes and trophy to the winner is

:16:18. > :16:21.the winner of this title in 1971. She was Princess Anne. She watched

:16:21. > :16:26.all the competitors parade before the start of the show jumping,

:16:26. > :16:32.including her own daughter, Zara Phillips, who has had an

:16:32. > :16:42.outstanding time so far. All of the horses have to go through the vet's

:16:42. > :16:47.inspection -- inspection. One horse was found lame, Elizabeth Powell's

:16:47. > :16:51.horse. They will take him home, and see if they can get him sound. The

:16:51. > :16:56.other contenders trotted up sound. It is an incredibly tight

:16:56. > :17:01.competition with just three fences separating the top 15. It is four

:17:01. > :17:07.penalty points for a knock-down, one penalty point for a second over

:17:07. > :17:17.the optimum time, and three riders in the top 10 have two horses to

:17:17. > :17:21.

:17:21. > :17:31.ride. They went out of order. Let's started. It is not a great round

:17:31. > :17:39.for Mary King. Time is all right. But that 16 expensive mistake...

:17:39. > :17:43.Here is the first. The horse just lost his back end. That is the

:17:44. > :17:53.problem these riders have got to face. It has made it all the more

:17:54. > :17:55.

:17:55. > :18:00.complicated. William Fox-Pitt. He is on his first horse. Both of his

:18:00. > :18:10.horses in the top paid, but he has had three fences down. It is 12 to

:18:10. > :18:20.

:18:20. > :18:30.well. In all, he has 12 to add. He finishes on 61.1, which will drop

:18:30. > :18:36.him down a number of places. Four at the very least. Zara Phillips

:18:36. > :18:42.coming to the end of her round. An early fence down. An otherwise

:18:42. > :18:49.great performance. She will do Britain proud in the future. She

:18:49. > :18:57.goes on to 55.7. She was 12. She will drop down three places at the

:18:57. > :19:03.moment, but still a performance to reckon with in the future. Now

:19:03. > :19:12.Andrew Nicholson. Andrew, once again, class or right through the

:19:12. > :19:17.competition. To make in the top five. It is a horse that has been

:19:17. > :19:21.right up with the leaders in the cross-country and was disappointing

:19:21. > :19:26.in this phased in Badminton in the spring, but then jumped a very good

:19:26. > :19:33.round to clinch the bronze team medal for the Kiwis. That was at

:19:33. > :19:37.the World Equestrian Games. A clear round now would put the pressure on

:19:37. > :19:42.the four above him. Game on for Andrew Nicholson. He is a man on

:19:42. > :19:50.fire in the last month. He has won this twice. Can he win it a third

:19:50. > :19:54.time? He's certainly capable of it. He did get a couple of time faults

:19:54. > :20:03.yesterday, but he jumped a very good round. What is interesting

:20:03. > :20:07.watching Andrew is he is keeping the horses interest. He is not

:20:07. > :20:11.always keeping him relaxed but interested. One minute he is

:20:11. > :20:15.softening his hands, then holding the 999 calls through there. He is

:20:15. > :20:25.saying, you don't know what I'm going to do, so keep concentrating

:20:25. > :20:28.

:20:28. > :20:34.and thinking. That was pretty lucky. He is creating his own luck. He is

:20:34. > :20:41.doing a jolly good job on this horse. Keeping its interest and

:20:41. > :20:44.enthusiasm. Sometimes show jumping isn't enough to pack them off.

:20:45. > :20:54.Especially as we said with cross country the day before... A

:20:55. > :20:55.

:20:55. > :21:05.brilliant round. He is on form. 45.1. The gaunt and is down. -- the

:21:05. > :21:14.

:21:14. > :21:21.We are live with the rain easing of. One fence down. You must be pleased.

:21:21. > :21:25.I am. I was just a bit casual to the second fence, but after that,

:21:25. > :21:29.he jumped fantastic and it will only get better. He will learn from

:21:29. > :21:33.it, and the whole weekend has gone really well. You know, I said at

:21:33. > :21:39.the beginning top 20 would be great, so hopefully not going to go down

:21:39. > :21:44.any further than that. You will be at the 13th or better. Having

:21:44. > :21:50.retired to other horse earlier this year, do you think there is a

:21:50. > :21:57.chance now you can make it to learn them? You never know. He has gone

:21:57. > :22:07.really well. You know, he can only improve from this run. He will only

:22:07. > :22:07.

:22:07. > :22:14.get better, he is only 10 years old. I hope he will be at the top.

:22:14. > :22:18.tough is it in there with it being so wet? The rain has made it tricky

:22:18. > :22:23.then it was this morning. It is getting deeper. And the time,

:22:23. > :22:31.you've got to keep going with the time. I think you will see a lot

:22:31. > :22:37.fewer clears. Who will win? I don't know. It is between William and the

:22:37. > :22:43.two Kiwis. There is no room for error. Thank you. Well done to you.

:22:43. > :22:53.We will see Tom McEwan now. He is about to go into the arena. This is

:22:53. > :23:07.

:23:07. > :23:11.what an exciting talent he is. He is on an old racehorse. Picked up

:23:11. > :23:21.when he was working for Pippa Funnell. He has gone really well.

:23:21. > :23:22.

:23:22. > :23:30.Thomas part of a gold medal team. Let's go around the course and see

:23:30. > :23:33.the problems said. It is a good track and he has done a good job.

:23:33. > :23:37.You have to turn back and yourself in fence three, which is good for

:23:37. > :23:43.the horses that have been cross country because they can get a

:23:43. > :23:52.little bit flat. There is one away for Tom, sadly. The twists and

:23:52. > :24:02.turns a should keep the horse's hind legs underneath them. You have

:24:02. > :24:11.

:24:11. > :24:17.interesting, he took a stride out there compared to some of the

:24:17. > :24:27.riders and paid the penalty. He is straight into the crowds, so the

:24:27. > :24:28.

:24:28. > :24:35.horses can be distracted. A running stride. Very careful over the fence.

:24:35. > :24:41.Again, a quick turn back. He can save some time here at this wall.

:24:41. > :24:51.The time is quite tight. The last two fences, and upright to a big

:24:51. > :24:58.open oxer that is again been on the ground a few times. It is 12 to add.

:24:58. > :25:05.And 61.3. That could put him down from 9th to 19th. It is so close.

:25:05. > :25:08.Every penalty is going to be really expensive here. Tom McEwan, never

:25:08. > :25:18.been in the sort of atmosphere with this sort of level of competition.

:25:18. > :25:41.

:25:41. > :25:51.Great experience for this 20-year- ago, for that Badminton this time.

:25:51. > :25:55.

:25:55. > :25:59.He went very well across the country. 52 clear rounds. Mark

:25:59. > :26:05.Phillips can be very happy with the effect of the cross-country, but as

:26:05. > :26:09.usual, the show jumping is playing its part. I was just thinking that

:26:09. > :26:16.this horse is such a good jumper and is usually clear. I would have

:26:16. > :26:21.expected him to go clear, but any horse can have a pole dance. The

:26:21. > :26:27.competition is getting more and more exciting. In general terms,

:26:27. > :26:33.this horse is pretty careful, and I would be surprised if he has

:26:33. > :26:43.another one down. Well... Commentators Kurz, I'm afraid.

:26:43. > :26:48.is a man that will try to catch the Australian selector's I again. --

:26:48. > :26:56.the selectors I again. He has not done a lot wrong. He will be very

:26:56. > :27:03.keen to get to London. He is based on the Dorset-Somerset border. He

:27:03. > :27:08.has a lovely young family. He has taken the pressure off the top four.

:27:08. > :27:18.He jumped a clear round at Badminton and Chatsworth to win the

:27:18. > :27:28.

:27:28. > :27:36.-- Ceredigion places. Zara Phillips was 17th and she is now into the

:27:36. > :27:46.top 10. So, 12th it is for Sam Griffiths. He goes on to 59.1. He

:27:46. > :27:58.

:27:58. > :28:04.dropping pretty regularly. In comes Mary King. Mary King with the home-

:28:04. > :28:13.bred horse. She has already jumped another horse, and she was lying

:28:13. > :28:19.6th. She is on a 62.8. She has dropped also ride down. Tom McEwan

:28:19. > :28:25.just in front of her. What can she do on this horse? She won the

:28:25. > :28:28.relics can tacky event on this horse. If she wins this, she gives

:28:28. > :28:34.herself a chance for the Grand Slam at Badminton next year. There is

:28:34. > :28:39.more than just this competition hanging on this round. Of the term,

:28:39. > :28:46.we saw that her horse slipped behind. -- on the term. It is

:28:46. > :28:52.interesting because it was such a good cross-country course yesterday.

:28:52. > :29:02.Some of the known good show jumpers have had a few poles down, so it is

:29:02. > :29:03.

:29:03. > :29:12.anybody's game. This is a home-bred mare... 0, that state! Well. She is

:29:12. > :29:17.riding her luck. It has never been easy... That was three rattles in a

:29:17. > :29:27.row. You cannot get away with that. The tension is going to get more

:29:27. > :29:27.

:29:27. > :29:32.and more now. Two Kiwis and a British rider to come. This fall is

:29:32. > :29:38.jumping very well. The rain we have had has affected the ground

:29:38. > :29:44.conditions. Some of these horses just showing the difference. This

:29:44. > :29:51.morning, the horses were jumping quite a few clear rounds. Not so

:29:51. > :30:01.this afternoon. All is not lost. Probably that Grand Slam is gone.

:30:01. > :30:11.She is all right on time. It is 47.4 for Mary King. Nicholson moves

:30:11. > :30:18.

:30:18. > :30:27.above her. Could he have two in the just gone into the arena for New

:30:27. > :30:33.What is your feeling? A lot of attention. The horse is normally a

:30:33. > :30:39.good jumper. We have got our fingers crossed. Lenamore is such

:30:39. > :30:49.an agile horse? He should be OK? Yes, on the day, you can only hope

:30:49. > :31:14.

:31:14. > :31:18.last time. A clear chance of back- will work is the fact he has been

:31:19. > :31:23.trained in Scotland. You would think he would be used to that,

:31:23. > :31:27.training in Scotland. But the condition of the ground. Caroline

:31:27. > :31:37.has to stay relaxed because he is, in general terms, an excellent

:31:37. > :31:45.

:31:45. > :31:55.jumper. He is coming up to third and already lies with William Fox-

:31:55. > :32:02.

:32:02. > :32:12.Pitt. It is getting expensive. 50,000 to the winner. King's

:32:12. > :32:15.

:32:15. > :32:23.Temptress now goes above Lenamore. The last four Caroline and Lenamore.

:32:23. > :32:32.Drums that and the time is OK. -- jumps that. Penalties will be added

:32:32. > :32:42.for those mistakes. It is a bid for horse and Draper were such a

:32:42. > :32:54.

:32:54. > :33:03.popular winner last year. -- it is You nearly put the pressure on?

:33:03. > :33:09.was chuffed to bits with King's temperatures. -- Kings Temptress. I

:33:09. > :33:19.am very grateful to everybody who helped with the mare team and has

:33:19. > :33:29.

:33:29. > :33:37.and better. Did a lovely, clear ground yesterday. He eases the

:33:37. > :33:43.pressure for William Fox-Pitt. And another. But Nero's still in the

:33:43. > :33:53.lead. Still a Nicholson lead to be beaten at the moment. It now means

:33:53. > :33:53.

:33:53. > :33:58.William has got one offence but not two. -- one fence. I am thinking

:33:58. > :34:05.that yesterday's cross country was big in galloping. The riders loved

:34:05. > :34:13.the idea of it but it is taking its toll today. Some really are good

:34:13. > :34:22.jumpers are having a tough time today. Only William Fox-Pitt can

:34:22. > :34:27.take it away from the Kiwis now. Andrew has dropped down to 8th

:34:27. > :34:37.place. Mary King is currently lying but two -- behind Nicholson and

:34:37. > :34:40.

:34:40. > :34:50.nearer. Turning for home. All is not lost for Nicholson. It won't be

:34:50. > :34:54.

:34:54. > :35:00.Avebury. He is OK on that time. There is one to jump. And the man

:35:00. > :35:10.who has won it five times in all. Could he be the first man to ever

:35:10. > :35:20.

:35:20. > :35:27.win it six times? Can William Fox- Pitt do it on this lovely horse. He

:35:27. > :35:32.jumped a class round yesterday. He jumped a decent round to win the

:35:32. > :35:38.young horse class at Blenheim last year, which is when he really came

:35:38. > :35:46.to prominence. He is known as Mr cool, but he needs to just be out

:35:46. > :35:54.on this situation this afternoon. We need the horse also to get up in

:35:55. > :36:04.the air. Such a great performance he has to do. He jumps the first

:36:05. > :36:08.

:36:08. > :36:13.two offences well. -- two fences. He won Blenheim last year and

:36:13. > :36:23.jumped a very good, convincing clear round there, but this is just

:36:23. > :36:26.

:36:26. > :36:34.a step further. Dare I say, he can afford one, but not two. He is

:36:34. > :36:41.still at 39.7. He did not get a great stride there. I love the

:36:41. > :36:49.horse's reaction. He said, I will go higher and wider, just sit still.

:36:49. > :36:59.What a luxury to have a fence in hand. In these conditions, it could

:36:59. > :37:05.

:37:05. > :37:11.easily be necessary. He first won it in 1994. Then, 2002 and 2005.

:37:11. > :37:17.This will be the one the Kiwis will wish they had not let go. Yes. This

:37:17. > :37:23.will be the one that might, might win this man and Olympic gold

:37:23. > :37:33.medal! He has got it! He has got a time fault but no worry about that.

:37:33. > :37:34.

:37:34. > :37:43.He wins the Land Rover Burghley horse trials and it puts him back

:37:43. > :37:49.on the path for next year's Olympic Games. That was a class round. It

:37:49. > :37:59.really was. It was fantastic. Not only brilliant riding, but what a

:37:59. > :38:00.

:38:00. > :38:07.horse. Look at the height to get over these fences. William,

:38:07. > :38:17.extremely happy. And I would think Parklane Hawk, just as happy.

:38:17. > :38:19.

:38:19. > :38:25.Absolutely. Now, it is Parklane Hawk, the 2011 winner. After the

:38:25. > :38:35.disappointment of last week, I was suggest that High Kingdom is

:38:35. > :38:39.

:38:39. > :38:45.Nicholson did not quite get there with an era. Another fighting

:38:45. > :38:55.performance from Mary King. Last year's winner, Caroline Powell, in

:38:55. > :38:59.4th. And then Jonathan Paget for New Zealand, one to remember. Boyd

:38:59. > :39:07.Martin, making the American challenge next year, stronger and

:39:07. > :39:14.better. Andrew Nicholson in 8th with a Avebury. And Lawrence

:39:14. > :39:23.Shannon in net 9th. And then Zara Phillips, with High Kingdom, in

:39:24. > :39:30.10th place. What a very good Land Rover Burghley for Great Britain.

:39:30. > :39:40.CLARE BALDING: He has made history, winning Burghley for the 6th time.

:39:40. > :39:46.

:39:46. > :39:53.For that, you go past Mark Todd. It was great. He is a phenomenal

:39:53. > :40:00.horse. There work poll's crashing down all around you. Hideous

:40:00. > :40:05.conditions? I was feeling quite sick. He is normally a lovely

:40:05. > :40:09.jumper. But Avebury is also normally a fantastic jumper and had

:40:10. > :40:19.fences down. So did Caroline. I went in thinking, believe in him,

:40:20. > :40:20.

:40:20. > :40:27.but realistically, what was my chance? It was tiny. I feel so

:40:27. > :40:36.proud now. It feels amazing to have won Burghley six times after

:40:36. > :40:41.winning Badminton six times. It is very satisfying. The ones behind me

:40:41. > :40:45.were legends, but had just managed to pip them. We might be cracking

:40:45. > :40:52.on in hours and the frames! You never know! You have got so many

:40:52. > :40:57.good animals in your yard at home. Could this one be your Olympic one?

:40:57. > :41:02.He has certainly increased himself in my estimation. It is a big step

:41:02. > :41:08.up for him so let's see how he comes out in the spring. Certainly

:41:08. > :41:15.one of my big hopes for next year. Where were due well this in your

:41:15. > :41:23.achievements? One of the best. I have had five grade Burghleys. I

:41:23. > :41:28.can pretend I am relaxed and at OK, but deep down, it means so much.

:41:28. > :41:33.Many, many congratulations. He withstood the challenge from all of

:41:33. > :41:36.the New Zealanders, but in particular, this man, Andrew

:41:36. > :41:46.Nicholson, they are huge rivals around the world. You did your

:41:46. > :41:46.

:41:46. > :41:51.best? Yes. Nereo did a great job but William's horse jumped

:41:51. > :41:59.immaculately UN won. In terms of looking back over the competition,

:41:59. > :42:05.what would your thoughts be as a hall on this dramatic event? It is

:42:05. > :42:10.one of the best. It is great that people come and watch. Look at the

:42:10. > :42:15.rain we have had today. Still a great crowd, and they watch and

:42:15. > :42:20.supported and enjoy it. And I enjoy entertaining than. I know you never

:42:20. > :42:26.enjoy finishing second but you have to be proud to have two horses

:42:26. > :42:31.going as well as they did? They have worked pretty hard all year.

:42:31. > :42:37.Her plea now they will have an easy spring and be my two Mains for the

:42:37. > :42:44.Olympics. -- her obsolete. Looking ahead, the New Zealand team looks

:42:44. > :42:50.very strong? Yes. It is very exciting. It is great to be part of

:42:50. > :43:00.a team on the up. Jonathan Paget looked very, very good. Clock

:43:00. > :43:02.

:43:02. > :43:08.Johnson. -- Clarke Johnson. Well done to Andrew Nicholson. He

:43:08. > :43:14.finishes as the run up, but William Fox-Pitt, victory was his. Mary

:43:14. > :43:19.King over there, she finishes third. We hope you enjoy the features on

:43:19. > :43:25.hat and all the coverage from this year's Burghley. It has been sunny,
