:00:15. > :00:21.Seven London Olympic medallists are here among the competitors from 10

:00:21. > :00:31.nations hoping to be crowned the 2012 early champion. -- Burghley

:00:31. > :00:43.

:00:43. > :00:48.The hello and welcome to the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, the

:00:48. > :00:52.most prestigious four-star event anywhere in the world. Over 140,000

:00:52. > :01:02.people are expected here over the weekend. If, like me, you are a

:01:02. > :01:03.

:01:03. > :01:07.newcomer to this three-day event, here is my 60-second guide. We are

:01:07. > :01:12.in the beautiful Lincolnshire town of Stamford, 10 miles north-west of

:01:12. > :01:17.Peterborough. The three-day event takes place in the grounds of this

:01:17. > :01:22.magnificent 16th century country house. 51 years ago, the sixth

:01:22. > :01:29.Marquess of Exeter gave his permission for the event to be held

:01:29. > :01:34.on his estate. But there is more. There is shopping to die for. There

:01:34. > :01:42.is Pony Club and Young Event Horse competitions. There is food to suit

:01:42. > :01:45.each and every culinary taste. But the competition is the main draw,

:01:45. > :01:51.and it consists of three phases, starting with the dressage, which

:01:51. > :01:54.takes place here in the main arena. The cross country phase consists of

:01:54. > :01:58.33 fences spread across this undulating parkland. Finally, the

:01:58. > :02:01.climax of the event is the show jumping, which once again is

:02:01. > :02:06.performed back here in the arena. Each rider can enter more than one

:02:06. > :02:11.horse and this year, there is an international cast of 85. These are

:02:11. > :02:15.the main contenders. Who better to start with than Mr Burghley

:02:15. > :02:20.himself? William Fox-Pitt is out to break his own record of six wins

:02:20. > :02:25.and regain his status as the number one rider in the world. New

:02:25. > :02:29.Zealand's event rider of the century is also here and could

:02:30. > :02:33.equal Fox-Pitt's six burly successes. 51-year-old eventing

:02:33. > :02:41.Queen Mary King, fresh from the Olympics, will be hoping to better

:02:41. > :02:45.last year's third place. Don't trader is aiming to give his

:02:45. > :02:49.country its first Burghley victory. Caroline Powell gave New Zealand a

:02:49. > :02:54.tenth success two years ago and was a member of the team that took

:02:54. > :02:59.bronze in London. Oliver Townend completed a rare double in 2009. He

:02:59. > :03:03.will have a point to prove after missing out on the Olympics.

:03:03. > :03:08.Another Kiwi contender is the world number-one, also a two-time winner

:03:08. > :03:13.here. And former world champion and Olympic medallist Clayton

:03:13. > :03:17.Fredericks is one of four riders representing Australia. Great

:03:17. > :03:21.Britain's dressage rider stole the show at Greenwich last month, with

:03:21. > :03:25.gold medal performances in the team and individual events. It seems

:03:25. > :03:29.about Burghley has caught dressage fever. A eyesore Laura first and I

:03:29. > :03:36.cried, because Alf was so beautifully behaved. We know how

:03:36. > :03:41.bad he can be with the crowd, but he was gorgeous. It was very

:03:41. > :03:47.emotional. And honestly, our top girl, Charlotte - what can you say?

:03:47. > :03:51.Personal best. The Olympics really adds sport to the -- adds value to

:03:51. > :03:57.the sport and makes it more appealing. The are your heroes?

:03:57. > :04:04.Charlotte Dujardin was amazing. thought it was so exciting. I must

:04:04. > :04:08.admit. It went right down to the last riders, so it could not have

:04:09. > :04:12.been more exciting. Nobody could have written the script, because it

:04:12. > :04:19.was so close and it could have gone to several nations. That makes it

:04:19. > :04:23.even better for us. This is William Fox-Pitt, with Park Lane Hall, one

:04:23. > :04:29.of the two horses he is competing with. Let's joined Mark Tucker to

:04:29. > :04:39.see how the dressage phase unfolded. Before we look at those dressage

:04:39. > :04:48.

:04:48. > :04:54.and Germany is certainly one of them after the Olympics. This was

:04:54. > :05:00.one of the strong German challengers. But the stars came

:05:00. > :05:07.thick and fast. Andrew Nicholson, of course, previous winner here on

:05:07. > :05:15.two occasions. Lovely, calm test. It was very accurate, and he also

:05:15. > :05:20.finished on 41. You have to get a good start at Burnley. On William

:05:20. > :05:25.Fox-Pitt and Park Lane awkward looking for wind number seven.

:05:25. > :05:30.Lovely, smoothed test, very relaxed. They got 41 as well. Clayton

:05:30. > :05:38.Fredericks had a lot of help from his wife in the dressage phase, or

:05:38. > :05:42.to good effect. He ended up with a superb test. The Americans have

:05:42. > :05:47.something to prove after a disappointing Olympics in London.

:05:47. > :05:54.They have been helped in the dressage phase by Linda Zhang, to

:05:54. > :06:00.good effect. Firstly, malice and Springer, 36 years old, on her

:06:00. > :06:04.second time here. She produced a good lead. But then Sinead Halpin

:06:04. > :06:09.and Manoir de Carneville set the dressage competition alight. Lovely

:06:09. > :06:14.movement, with a very accurate test. They really caught the judges' I

:06:14. > :06:22.with a score of 36.3 to put the Americans in first and second place

:06:22. > :06:27.and head the dressage. I was not thinking about coming in and

:06:27. > :06:32.winning. I was just really hoping to have a great ride that showed

:06:32. > :06:39.all the work we have been doing at home, and to be proud of my horse

:06:39. > :06:49.and myself. The lead was only three points up in penalties, but look

:06:49. > :06:56.

:06:56. > :06:59.how close the third and equal And so to the centrepiece of the

:06:59. > :07:03.competition, the cross country, where the control and discipline

:07:03. > :07:07.displayed in dressage must be combined with endurance, power and

:07:07. > :07:11.pace. Let's take a closer look at the course.

:07:11. > :07:14.Again, captain Mark Phillips has taken on the challenge to design a

:07:14. > :07:19.burly track worthy of his reputation as one of the toughest

:07:19. > :07:24.in the world. The course is the same distance as last year, with 33

:07:24. > :07:34.fences, 45 jumping efforts and the optimum time is just under 11

:07:34. > :07:35.

:07:35. > :07:38.minutes 30. Let's look at some of the important fences on the course.

:07:38. > :07:45.The Leaf Pit is a similar offence to last year, but they have changed

:07:45. > :07:50.it by adding an extra jumper before the big drop down. So we jumped a

:07:50. > :07:55.roll-top fence, and then it is a two stride distance to a two-metre

:07:55. > :08:01.drop. But where we land, the horse and rider will land another two

:08:01. > :08:07.metres on from that. With a rider and operate or house -- course, it

:08:07. > :08:11.is a long way down. Then there is a narrow fence where you have to be

:08:12. > :08:16.very accurate. There is a longer alternative which is more along a

:08:16. > :08:20.straight line, which makes it easier. But if you take that way,

:08:20. > :08:30.it will be at least eight seconds longer and you don't want to take

:08:30. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:41.long way his early on if you want to win. This is Land Rover Valley.

:08:41. > :08:46.Then we do a tight turn back to the Land Rover hedge. Then there is a

:08:46. > :08:54.tight left to jump the third part on an ankle. It is an accuracy

:08:54. > :08:58.question, and it comes very early on. Here at fence 19, the Land

:08:58. > :09:04.Rover Dairy Farm, it is between the sixth and 7th minute, so the horses

:09:04. > :09:07.are starting to settle in. It is a question of power and accuracy. The

:09:07. > :09:16.most important thing is to get your horse back enough without killing

:09:16. > :09:23.the engine. Both these steps are quite tour. It is important to get

:09:23. > :09:28.there on a good distance. Once you get on top, the fences are at an

:09:28. > :09:34.angle, so it is important that your horse has his eye on the fence. If

:09:34. > :09:39.you don't have control, your horse could go left or right or even stop.

:09:39. > :09:43.Here we are at the lake crossing at the end of the course. It is at the

:09:43. > :09:49.10 minute market. So the horses are getting tired, and it is quite a

:09:49. > :09:56.technical section. A few changes have been made since last year, the

:09:56. > :10:02.first one being to 26. They have taken the roof away. The drop is

:10:02. > :10:11.now conducive to a better jump. You then have to pick the horse up and

:10:11. > :10:18.keep him in a balance. The island fence is different. It has got the

:10:18. > :10:23.roof from last year. But because the head is soft, the horse should

:10:23. > :10:28.pop through that. You then go back through the water, a bit more

:10:28. > :10:31.tiring. Then you are heading up to the Jubilee ditch on the way to the

:10:31. > :10:37.main arena. Give that was not enough to whet your appetite, how

:10:37. > :10:41.about this, one of the rider frighteners situated at the top of

:10:42. > :10:51.the cross country course, requiring a huge amount of courage for oars

:10:52. > :10:59.

:10:59. > :11:02.and rider to clear. I am glad I 6550 metre course, of the Olympic

:11:02. > :11:07.feature here really kicking in with the crowds set for a great day of

:11:07. > :11:14.sport. Who better to get them under way than the start, Andrew

:11:14. > :11:19.Nicholson, with calico Joe. Irish- bred horse. You can see the clock

:11:19. > :11:26.counting down from those 11 minutes 30. Away he goes, the first on the

:11:26. > :11:36.course. Then we go on to the Leaf Pit. Here is the direct route down

:11:36. > :11:42.

:11:42. > :11:46.over that big drop. The red route is four or five seconds longer.

:11:46. > :11:56.There is no one better to give everyone an ideal of what this

:11:56. > :11:56.

:11:56. > :12:06.course it is about. Calico Jo finished fourth individually in the

:12:06. > :12:08.

:12:08. > :12:13.game's. Andrew Nicholson would love to share his worth here. Now we are

:12:13. > :12:18.at Discovery Valley. Here, there is again a short route, which covers

:12:18. > :12:22.the wonderful ditch that has been part of the action now over the 52

:12:22. > :12:28.years that we have been competing here. The red line shows the

:12:28. > :12:35.alternative route. This time, that route is a lot longer and will take

:12:35. > :12:40.at least 10 or 12 seconds more. Let's take a look now at Andrew

:12:40. > :12:49.Nicholson coming to Discovery Valley. He is a very fast horse

:12:49. > :12:59.across the country. Andrew was never one for wasting time.

:12:59. > :12:59.

:12:59. > :13:04.Skidding on the corner. But he makes it through that quick turn.

:13:04. > :13:14.You can see the horses having a quick look at the ditch. His left

:13:14. > :13:16.

:13:16. > :13:20.leg slipped underneath him. We are now coming down defence nine, the

:13:20. > :13:26.cascade, which leads to the Trout hatchery, one of the feature

:13:26. > :13:32.fencers here. Here again, there are some alternatives. It is one of the

:13:32. > :13:37.strongest tests on the course. The yellow line is the direct route. If

:13:37. > :13:45.they refuse, they can take the alternative route. There will be

:13:45. > :13:49.penalties on the Cardiff that happens. They have to take the

:13:49. > :13:57.direct route. It is only the last element where they can change their

:13:57. > :14:04.mind. A little slap on the horse's shoulder as if to say, go on. The

:14:05. > :14:14.horses have to be committed through the water. Otherwise, they will

:14:15. > :14:17.

:14:17. > :14:24.struggle on the way out over the final element. We are now up at the

:14:24. > :14:31.HSBC Maltings Branch. Here, there is a 306 degree turn, with some big

:14:31. > :14:36.spreads. This is the direct route, coming round to the first accuracy

:14:36. > :14:46.test as the second element of this sequence of fences. Here, there is

:14:46. > :14:56.an option. The Red Line takes a lot longer. I do not think too many

:14:56. > :15:00.

:15:00. > :15:10.people will be taking those red lines. Andrews and -- Andrew

:15:10. > :15:24.

:15:24. > :15:30.Nicholson is now coming up to the consuming. There's no-one who will

:15:30. > :15:36.be in for a chance of winning this. You can hardly see how sharp that

:15:36. > :15:46.angle is. Calico Joe never waivers at all. He turns back to the

:15:46. > :15:49.

:15:49. > :15:53.halfway. The direct route is some narrow triple brushes with a

:15:53. > :15:58.coroner the middle of them. Again they are triple brushes, but they

:15:58. > :16:08.are not sonar row and the corner is not so acute. But, my word, the

:16:08. > :16:16.

:16:16. > :16:19.how Andrew is on time. He's always very good at judgment of pace. Just

:16:19. > :16:24.a little bit behind, but that is not perhaps that surprising. There

:16:24. > :16:34.is a lot of galloping to come later on. I think a horse of this quality

:16:34. > :17:02.

:17:02. > :17:09.ditch there. His hind legs kicking the flag over. He was very quick

:17:09. > :17:14.and neat through there. Now, one of the feature areas, the Land Rover

:17:14. > :17:18.Dairy Farm. Two big steps, then a brush at the top. I think we all

:17:18. > :17:24.will know whether the horses are still galloping and looking good.

:17:24. > :17:34.It is a long one-stride in the top, but not for Calico Joe. Andrew is

:17:34. > :17:36.

:17:36. > :17:41.not hanging around as he comes around to this stride.

:17:41. > :17:46.Five past winners, Olly one of them n the field. They've had 16 wins

:17:46. > :17:52.between them. Over a quarter of the field, here at Burghley for the

:17:52. > :17:59.first time. Now the track. Oliver has to get the stick out and say,

:17:59. > :18:09.come on, keep transtraiting, keep going forward.

:18:09. > :18:11.

:18:11. > :18:15.It's quite difficult.... There is a steep down-hill ramp to those

:18:15. > :18:21.brushes. He's called it a day. That is interesting. Obviously decided

:18:21. > :18:26.the horse did not feel as if he is committed today and probably quite

:18:26. > :18:35.sensible. He ended up with two strides in there. There is hardly

:18:35. > :18:45.room for the two strides. One of the reasons there are so many here

:18:45. > :18:45.

:18:45. > :19:28.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:19:28. > :19:33.is because of the Olympics. Let's battle with Germany -- of course a

:19:33. > :19:41.great battle with Germany just getting the gold. William Fox-Pitt,

:19:41. > :19:45.the horse he rode in London now away with Seacookie.

:19:45. > :19:50.A huge ditch. Crow can hardly see how big that is. It is enormous

:19:50. > :20:00.when you stand on the edge of that. He makes it look like a fence out

:20:00. > :20:04.

:20:04. > :20:14.all the time in the world to get lined up and pop over that skinny

:20:14. > :20:25.

:20:25. > :20:32.this course. Here is William Fox- Pitt. That would have hurt

:20:32. > :20:39.Seacookie. Will it affect him? It is a big ditch there and a wide

:20:39. > :20:42.trest on the bank of the other side. A stride in on the turn. He is

:20:42. > :20:47.still galloping well. It will be interesting to see when the horse

:20:47. > :20:57.comes to the next ditch whether it has had any effect. He's a long way

:20:57. > :21:12.

:21:12. > :21:22.on. Andrew will be going for the time, no doubt about that. Remember

:21:22. > :21:24.

:21:24. > :21:32.11.30 is the time. He really is having to push Calico Joe, this

:21:32. > :21:39.Irish-bred horse. He taps it, but still galloping on. Jumps nicely,

:21:40. > :21:49.through that little hole. A rather boat on the an gel. You

:21:50. > :22:05.

:22:05. > :22:10.Seacookie a very good horse. second here in 2010.

:22:10. > :22:15.It looks as if he's not happy. He's made his mind off and he's going

:22:15. > :22:21.off course. That mistake at Discovery Valley -

:22:21. > :22:25.there he is, off lirblly touching his cap, which means the white flag

:22:25. > :22:35.is going up. That is a disappointment for William after

:22:35. > :22:48.

:22:49. > :22:53.the great success of the London significant combination which has -

:22:53. > :23:03.- Clare Lewis with that significant combination which has been here

:23:03. > :23:13.

:23:13. > :23:19.Looking very positive. Andrew Nicholson, with Calico Joe. Owned

:23:19. > :23:25.by the 2012 Syndicate. The horse galloping to the line. He's so good

:23:25. > :23:29.at getting his horses fit. That is so necessary with this Burghley

:23:29. > :23:33.terrain. He heads in front of the great backdrop of Burghley House.

:23:33. > :23:38.Is he going to get there? He is going to get there. He's going to

:23:38. > :23:46.be seven seconds inside the time. He stays on his dressage score of

:23:46. > :23:52.53 and the dye is cast by the I can wi Andrew Nicholson on Calico Joe.

:23:52. > :23:56.-- Kiwi, Andrew Nicholson, on Calico Joe.

:23:57. > :24:00.It is so close between these two water fences. That was lovely

:24:00. > :24:05.through there. That was a piece of good riding. We will not see many

:24:05. > :24:12.better. A really nice jump over the first

:24:12. > :24:19.one. She commits him on one stride. He's looking positive and forward.

:24:19. > :24:23.It is very similar to 12 months ago. The start is a little easier. The

:24:23. > :24:33.middle of it is pretty intense, perhaps harder than last year,

:24:33. > :24:34.

:24:34. > :24:44.which makes you a little bit later as well. Sound like it might catch

:24:44. > :25:00.

:25:00. > :25:06.out a few riders today? I hope so. his stick on his shoulder. He looks

:25:06. > :25:13.a little slow, this horse. I think it's just his way... Look at his

:25:13. > :25:17.eyes and ears. He's concentrating, he's honest. He's not the fastest

:25:17. > :25:26.horse in the world. We are back with Clare Lewis now.

:25:26. > :25:32.She is forcing the pace. The going here absolutely superb. The rain

:25:32. > :25:37.has certainly kept it in tip-top nick. One wonders whether there is

:25:37. > :25:42.more cut than we thought. They are struggling to get the time, but

:25:42. > :25:45.Significant is going well. You see there he did take a stride out of

:25:45. > :25:55.that final element. Four strides and then three. One or two more

:25:55. > :26:33.

:26:33. > :26:37.but long. Enormous strides, so getting him manoeuvred around these

:26:37. > :26:42.technical fences is probably hard work for Ruth. What I love about

:26:42. > :26:48.the horse is his honesty and expression and look at the smile on

:26:48. > :26:54.Ruth's face. Now the turn of 21- year-old Emily Parker. One of the

:26:54. > :26:59.first-time riders here at Burghley. She has won gold and won the

:26:59. > :27:04.individual title, that was two years ago.

:27:04. > :27:14.A combination that really are looking to try and hit the big-time

:27:14. > :27:19.

:27:19. > :27:27.here. And Significant... Yiebgs! Yike! Didn't get the perfect stride.

:27:27. > :27:35.She's still in tact. Emily at the Leaf Pit.

:27:35. > :27:39.Oh, he's hanging right in. He just ducks past. He did quite get the

:27:39. > :27:45.line right. He certainly took advantage. Now going the longer

:27:45. > :27:55.route to get back on course. There are 20 jumping penalties and a loss

:27:55. > :28:07.

:28:08. > :28:14.of time from the young lady Emily waters - the anniversary -

:28:14. > :28:22.celebrating the 50th anniversary. A dressage score of 6 1.2. The way

:28:22. > :28:27.things are going she is one of the quickest we've seen so far. Now

:28:27. > :28:33.back to Parker. She'll fuel that crowd out there. Lots for the horse

:28:33. > :28:39.to see. He would not have seen so many people around an event before.

:28:39. > :28:44.Oh sh and again just didn't quite pick up the line quickly enough. It

:28:44. > :28:48.is another 20. Well, perhaps the occasion just getting to Emily. I

:28:48. > :28:58.am afraid that is the end of her first Burghley.

:28:58. > :29:14.

:29:14. > :29:24.Clare Lewis and Significant had a competitors, it is New Zealand's

:29:24. > :29:37.

:29:37. > :29:41.still enjoying it. I should think the time will be a

:29:41. > :29:47.bit tricky there, but not for Clare Lewis, only a little bit over the

:29:47. > :29:51.time when she comes to the last. What an incredible ride for

:29:51. > :29:56.Significant. That is her best performance at

:29:56. > :30:06.Burghley. She goes fourth at the early stages. Eight time penalties

:30:06. > :30:20.

:30:20. > :30:30.positive and how thinking ahead the rider was. He was almost laning

:30:30. > :30:46.

:30:46. > :30:54.into the turn. He was preparing, conditions. Jonathan Pagett makes

:30:54. > :31:00.nothing of that. He is going towards the Trout hatchery. This

:31:00. > :31:10.man has really come onto the stage. He competed in Kentucky and rarely

:31:10. > :31:15.

:31:16. > :31:20.caught the eye. A good stride in. If oh! Sit tight! I think he has

:31:20. > :31:24.been watching Mr Nicholson over the years. That was incredible. He

:31:24. > :31:34.jumped in well, but didn't quite have the right line and the horse

:31:34. > :31:39.

:31:39. > :31:43.deviated. Grit your teeth, boy. Incredible. Now, we have part of

:31:43. > :31:52.the Olympic gold medal for German team, Dirk Schrade. Now he writes

:31:52. > :31:58.this English bred horse, Hop And Skip. I lost a shoe. You often

:31:58. > :32:02.don't know you have lost a shoe, but he jumped the did well and then

:32:02. > :32:12.turned left and I heard this clunk. He didn't really slip, but I was

:32:12. > :32:13.

:32:13. > :32:18.conscious that he had lost a shoe. Touch wood, he will be OK. Hop And

:32:18. > :32:22.Skip went very well around the world equestrian games in Kentucky,

:32:22. > :32:32.with a Japanese rider on board. Dirk Schrade bought the horse after

:32:32. > :32:56.

:32:56. > :33:05.that. He turns very quickly into that Oxer. He is 17 seconds behind

:33:05. > :33:15.the time. He was the top young rider in New Zealand in 2009-2010.

:33:15. > :33:15.

:33:25. > :33:29.

:33:29. > :33:39.And Skip, lovely horse. Great type. I love the expression on these

:33:39. > :34:10.

:34:10. > :34:14.Good jump the Dirk Schrade. He jumps in well, pushes for the

:34:14. > :34:22.stride, immediately get his position back to lead to the laws

:34:22. > :34:28.have freedom of shoulder to jump at the second element. Jonathan Pagett

:34:28. > :34:32.is well on his way home. Little more than half a mile to get home,

:34:32. > :34:41.and he seems to be travelling only one inside the time. It is not easy

:34:41. > :34:51.to get this time of 11 minutes 30. You lose 0.4 of a second for every

:34:51. > :35:01.

:35:01. > :35:11.the second half. He was 17 seconds down at the Rolex fence, but he has

:35:11. > :35:46.

:35:46. > :35:52.increased his pace over the second the step. The horse thought about

:35:52. > :35:57.chipping in an extra stride as it did at the Trout hatchery, but took

:35:57. > :36:07.the one, with Jonathan Pagett now on the main stretch towards the

:36:07. > :36:16.

:36:17. > :36:26.home arena. He has just got to gallop on. Izzie Taylor is riding

:36:27. > :36:29.

:36:29. > :36:39.this lovely horse. She has been an extremely good form. This young

:36:39. > :36:51.

:36:51. > :36:56.But it is a very good run. This man goes into the lead, just having in

:36:56. > :37:06.those few penalties. That new league will be the one they have

:37:06. > :37:11.

:37:11. > :37:15.got to go in for. Hop And Skip still answering the questions.

:37:15. > :37:19.was hoping he would jump out in one and I thought I would stay where I

:37:19. > :37:23.was with my Legon, but he is a clever horse and he put in another

:37:23. > :37:28.stride. I was surprised that he jumped. A lot of horses would have

:37:28. > :37:32.stopped. But he jumped, and I got thrown a bit. I was off, and he

:37:32. > :37:39.stopped and waited for me to get back on, and we were off again. It

:37:39. > :37:49.was very lucky. Luck was all it was. New Zealand first and second at the

:37:49. > :37:53.

:37:53. > :37:59.moment. Well, Pagett said luck was all it was, but I think there was a

:37:59. > :38:09.serious amount of good riding. But that was where he lost his five

:38:09. > :38:09.

:38:09. > :38:15.seconds, hanging on. But Izzy is looking good. It is her first

:38:15. > :38:25.Burghley. Now coming up to the Rolex Combination. Like everyone

:38:25. > :38:29.

:38:29. > :38:39.else, just a bit behind the clock. The going is a bit on the sticky

:38:39. > :38:46.

:38:46. > :38:53.team here at Burghley have done. It does look incredible. Walking

:38:53. > :38:59.around it feels like walking on a carpet. Here is Olly Townend. One

:38:59. > :39:04.right to come later, on Armada. He is the more experienced of the two.

:39:04. > :39:10.He is checking out the distance in that Discovery Valley. It has been

:39:10. > :39:17.one of the most influential fences. He was walking a tighter line for

:39:17. > :39:27.two strides on that term. He is planning to anger and more. Here is

:39:27. > :39:27.

:39:27. > :39:37.Dirk Schrade, home for Germany. He goes to 52 points up in his

:39:37. > :39:44.

:39:44. > :39:54.nation in this sport. Jeff was unlucky not to be on the team for

:39:54. > :39:55.

:39:55. > :40:05.London, but he has something to prove here at Burghley. Nice young

:40:05. > :40:06.

:40:06. > :40:10.horse. Went very well at the event in Ireland. Finished fourth.

:40:10. > :40:16.Magnificent jumping. That is exactly what you want your horses

:40:16. > :40:24.to do. There have been some tricky moments, but the ground was holding

:40:24. > :40:30.more than I expected and he was a bit tired at the end. Apart from

:40:30. > :40:40.that, it was beautiful. He worked so well with me and didn't lose his

:40:40. > :40:54.

:40:54. > :41:01.jump until the end. I am very don't want to jinx Izzy, but she is

:41:01. > :41:11.riding this course so well and look so good. She deserves to have a

:41:11. > :41:18.

:41:18. > :41:28.good ride. Clayton Fredericks was third after dressage, 40.8. He has

:41:28. > :41:30.

:41:30. > :41:37.never won here. He was third here two years ago. There is so much to

:41:37. > :41:46.look at for the crowds. There are three of the London Olympic fencers.

:41:46. > :41:56.It looks like a schooling exercise for Izzy. Geoff Coen is an army

:41:56. > :41:58.

:41:58. > :42:03.officer, based in Dublin. He was in the Olympics in 2008. He did miss

:42:03. > :42:11.out on London. He has something to prove, and at the moment, he is

:42:11. > :42:19.certainly proving it. Brilliant ride fizzy Taylor. The time is

:42:19. > :42:29.pretty good. She is into third place at the moment. And so well

:42:29. > :42:31.

:42:31. > :42:36.deserved. New Zealand one and two, Britain third. What can Australia

:42:36. > :42:43.do about it? They had a disappointing Olympic Games,

:42:43. > :42:49.including this man. It was a very unlucky tumble at this Leaf Pit

:42:49. > :42:54.fence in London, where he slipped up and fell between the elements. I

:42:54. > :43:01.think is the has been taking a shower herself by the looks of her.

:43:01. > :43:11.A pat on the back from the performance manager for eventing.

:43:11. > :43:14.

:43:14. > :43:21.Clayton Fredericks now swinging into the Trout hatchery. Big horse,

:43:21. > :43:25.with a lot of scope. The going is a little holding. That is why they

:43:25. > :43:29.are coming home tired, plus the fact that it is 11 minutes 30 and

:43:29. > :43:34.we are at Burghley. But you can't ask for more. We have had a

:43:34. > :43:42.difficult year. It is great to be at a big event. It has been a good

:43:42. > :43:46.day. On the back regret Britain's success in equestrian sports at the

:43:46. > :43:50.London Olympics, interest has been raised to a new high. The question

:43:50. > :43:55.is now how and where youngsters get involved. There has been a system

:43:55. > :44:00.in place for almost a century now, and that is the Pony Club.

:44:00. > :44:03.Olympics has made it much more high profile. Riding schools have

:44:03. > :44:08.noticed a big increase in bookings. The children are far more excited

:44:08. > :44:17.about what they might achieve. But most children are passionate about

:44:17. > :44:22.horses anywhere. -- anyway. I had a Shetland pony, called Velvet.

:44:22. > :44:28.first pony was called Blackie. A little Shetland pony that actually

:44:28. > :44:30.lived in my house! Because the children have to learn how to

:44:31. > :44:35.control and other living thing, it is important to have the right

:44:35. > :44:40.training. It is not like running where it is just yourself. It is

:44:40. > :44:49.about looking after another animal. In it is not boring, it is fun and

:44:49. > :44:52.you learnt lots of stuff. You do get complaints from others. We all

:44:52. > :44:57.want our children to do well, but there are some parents who are

:44:57. > :45:01.driven to ridiculous degrees. Children will be crying because

:45:01. > :45:08.they don't want to jump the fence, and mum or dad will be saying, get

:45:08. > :45:10.over it! It is seven days a week, 365 days a year. But it is

:45:10. > :45:15.something that gives you a different perspective on life with

:45:15. > :45:19.the children. There is always a reason to get out of bed. They

:45:19. > :45:28.can't afford to be teenagers that lie around all day. We get up at

:45:28. > :45:38.six. One time do you finish? Quite late. Maybe seven. And then you

:45:38. > :45:44.

:45:44. > :45:54.have to do homework. It is not easy. champions of the future? A lot of

:45:54. > :45:55.

:45:55. > :46:05.dreaming and a wonderful place they get in the Pony Club. Here is

:46:05. > :46:15.

:46:15. > :46:25.He would need to be galloping well to make up that time. It can be

:46:25. > :46:44.

:46:44. > :46:51.done if the horse has enough time. a score of 52.7 in the dressage.

:46:51. > :46:56.Yes, checking his watch there. The horse is still pulling, so he has

:46:56. > :47:04.plenty of running left. So much better, that fence, is riding this

:47:05. > :47:12.year compared to last year, with that little roof on the way in.

:47:12. > :47:22.Polly Stockton coming down to fences six and seven.

:47:22. > :47:22.

:47:22. > :48:23.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:48:23. > :48:33.It looks as if the horse is all right - that is good news. Clayton

:48:33. > :48:34.

:48:34. > :48:43.on his feet too. A nasty moment. Out they go of the competition. The

:48:43. > :48:51.Australian, Clayton Fredericks. This horse was a little naughty in

:48:51. > :48:57.the start box. It has been reering. A sharp turn there.

:48:57. > :49:04.Quite nippy for a big horse, but so well trained normally, Betina's

:49:04. > :49:14.horses on the flat, that would you -- you would expect that.

:49:14. > :49:24.This man has now gone well here at Burghley. He's in third place at

:49:24. > :49:36.

:49:36. > :49:41.went out now I would not make the time. When I got to the top of the

:49:41. > :49:51.hill with the big ditch, I gall lopd then and made up a lot of time.

:49:51. > :49:59.

:50:00. > :50:05.He's a huge heart and always keeps to be nice all the way between

:50:05. > :50:15.those two water elements. It was so punchy and positive. Now Mary King

:50:15. > :50:15.

:50:15. > :51:04.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:51:04. > :51:14.- another part of that great silver and Mary's enthusiasm as good as

:51:14. > :51:51.

:51:51. > :51:54.year, but it still has to g jumped. Ears still pricked, but he's

:51:54. > :52:01.already 30 seconds down on the time. That, I would say, will be

:52:01. > :52:05.impossible to make up. Not that experienced at this level,

:52:05. > :52:15.so perhaps Bettina Hoy is going out to have a good ride and give the

:52:15. > :52:29.

:52:29. > :52:34.horse lots of experience for the Her chance is gone. Again, just

:52:34. > :52:40.doesn't turn the mare as well as she would like. That is 20

:52:40. > :52:45.penalties and probably will be, I would say, good night. She retires.

:52:45. > :52:55.She's not the only one. She's not the only one that has had trouble.

:52:55. > :52:55.

:52:55. > :54:10.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:54:10. > :54:17.- what an impressive start. 30- year-old Sinead Halpin.

:54:17. > :54:22.A horse which finished third in Kentucky and was here last year,

:54:22. > :54:26.finished 13th. Well, coming to that Land Rover Finale fence, Polly

:54:26. > :54:33.Stockton. How's the time? Well, a little bit over, but a pretty good

:54:33. > :54:43.time and Polly is smiling and into fifth position. She looks very

:54:43. > :54:43.

:54:43. > :54:50.happy. A great ride from Polly. Sinead Halpin now at the Leaf Pit.

:54:50. > :55:00.Had a lot of help from people. Spent six months with William Fox-

:55:00. > :55:06.

:55:06. > :55:11.Pitt. She really is a developing water splash. Looking pretty good,

:55:11. > :55:16.I have to say. I mean Andrew Nicholson makes it

:55:16. > :55:21.look easy. He's on a thorough bred horse and he was busy on it. I knew

:55:21. > :55:24.to do the time everything was going to have to work my way W the

:55:24. > :55:32.landing being soft and now landing steep, it takes more out of them.

:55:32. > :55:36.He's such a brave horse, he keeps going. I am delighted. This

:55:36. > :55:41.combination looks promising last year. They are riding now with much

:55:41. > :55:48.more confidence address they come into this. It has caused some

:55:48. > :55:56.problems to riders. It's still being pretty influential.

:55:56. > :56:00.They are through and ears pricked. Bettina Hoy - well the time may be

:56:00. > :56:07.just over half a minute over, but look how pleased she is with the

:56:07. > :56:17.horse. And so she ought to be - a young horse - probably his first

:56:17. > :56:17.

:56:17. > :56:25.four star and's chatting away to him. Sinead Halpin on a horse bred

:56:25. > :56:30.in France. Really does look full of running and very confident as they

:56:30. > :56:34.now come to the other influential on this course, the Trout Hatchery.

:56:34. > :56:40.She's not hanging around. She does not look that fast, but perhaps

:56:40. > :56:50.she's just looking very balanced. Certainly the horse is jumping and

:56:50. > :56:51.

:56:51. > :56:57.looking convincing at the moment, She's actually shaving every corner

:56:57. > :57:07.and every second off that she can. Look at that determination and

:57:07. > :57:07.

:57:07. > :57:17.expression! Francis Whittington - one of the

:57:17. > :57:19.

:57:19. > :57:29.reserves for the Olympics for Great They show that experience, that was

:57:29. > :57:42.

:57:42. > :57:47.so quick and neat through that they leave this to the halfway

:57:47. > :57:55.point, she really does look focused, this American rider. He has a small

:57:55. > :57:59.advantage, but she needs to keep it - here comes that check of time.

:57:59. > :58:02.Nine seconds and if Andrew Nicholson is anything to go by,

:58:02. > :58:07.that is very possible to make up. He's still the only one inside the

:58:07. > :58:12.time at the moment. Very deceptive. She never looks

:58:12. > :58:17.like she's in a hurry. What does she do is she moves quickly from

:58:17. > :58:27.her fences and gets back into the rhythm in a hurry. So, she's

:58:27. > :58:36.

:58:36. > :58:44.obviously not been hanging around she has set the horse up there.

:58:44. > :58:51.Didn't hassle it. It understand the question great. The Trout Hatchery

:58:51. > :58:58.now, he Adams justed the difference between these hedges. I don't think

:58:58. > :59:03.it has made it much easier. It is all about the take-off. If they get

:59:03. > :59:08.the take-off wrong, they are in all sorts of trouble.

:59:08. > :59:18.Kai Ruder for Germany at the Leaf Pit - makes it look like child's

:59:18. > :59:19.

:59:19. > :59:24.play. Now Sinead Halpin, coming to the Leap.

:59:24. > :59:34.This is a wonderful picture of happiness from the Americans -

:59:34. > :59:43.

:59:43. > :59:52.looking good! level, but this is a very classy

:59:52. > :59:56.horse and a very good combination. It's the Rolex Combination next for

:59:56. > :00:01.Francis Whittington. He's only six seconds behind the required time at

:00:01. > :00:05.this halfway point. He is certainly one of the quicker ones over the

:00:05. > :00:10.first half. I just wonder whether they might turn in the later

:00:10. > :00:13.stages? We'll see! A fast combination these two. Most

:00:14. > :00:19.of the horses so far have been taking it easy in the first half

:00:19. > :00:25.and making up the speed in the second - time rather, in the second

:00:25. > :00:30.half. And Sinead Halpin is an example of that.

:00:30. > :00:40.Wastes no time on her fences, gallops away quickly. She looks

:00:40. > :00:47.

:00:47. > :00:52.in Yorkshire with Chris. He is a man who has a great track record of

:00:52. > :01:02.producing young horses. He won the young German eventing championship

:01:02. > :01:12.

:01:12. > :01:22.on two major occasions as well as fences, so he doesn't look at all

:01:22. > :01:39.

:01:39. > :01:44.tired, unlike some of the other that time. This has been a

:01:44. > :01:49.brilliant exhibition from Sinead Halpin for the United States of

:01:49. > :01:59.America. She will definitely hold the lead into the final phase, the

:01:59. > :02:09.

:02:09. > :02:14.show jumping. She has increased her lead at this stage to nearly 12.

:02:14. > :02:18.was too quick in the beginning last year and I lost, but this year, he

:02:18. > :02:28.just felt great and I was patient even though I was 10 seconds down

:02:28. > :02:49.

:02:49. > :02:56.in the beginning. I just pushed him shade weary. Does well to get out

:02:56. > :03:06.of that without any jumping penalties. The horse was lucky to

:03:06. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:37.challengers, Allison Springer on Sir Percival get tired at the end

:03:37. > :03:38.

:03:38. > :03:44.of a course, but it has been a great performance. This rider was

:03:44. > :03:49.down on the clock at halfway. He was one of those on four-to-one

:03:49. > :03:58.equal fourth place. He could get close to the current leader, Sinead

:03:58. > :04:05.Halpin. Allison Springer is also trying to prove for the American

:04:05. > :04:15.selectors wrong in their decision. They might have sent their best

:04:15. > :04:15.

:04:15. > :04:21.team to Burghley. This has never been any easy oars. You don't see

:04:21. > :04:24.too many stallions eventing these days. He has long-striding, which

:04:25. > :04:34.makes it difficult to get quick times, but he seems to have enough

:04:35. > :04:41.

:04:41. > :04:48.energy left. This horse did the test of his life here. How will he

:04:48. > :04:58.cope with this cross-country? He has done a couple of four-star

:04:58. > :05:00.

:05:00. > :05:10.events, and looked pretty neat. Germany -- German rider is already

:05:10. > :05:10.

:05:10. > :05:53.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:06:07. > :06:14.He was knighted after the dressage from 42, and he is quickly through

:06:14. > :06:21.the Trout Hatchery. He was as good as anyone through the Trout

:06:22. > :06:27.Hatchery, his horse looking gutsy and determined. Allison Springer

:06:27. > :06:37.was second overnight after dressage. Not quite as quick as her college,

:06:37. > :06:37.

:06:37. > :07:34.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:07:34. > :07:41.America. Arthur and Allison Springer. She will be happy with

:07:41. > :07:48.that. She was second in Kentucky, behind William Fox-Pitt, back in

:07:48. > :07:58.the spring. She will not be in that position at the moment. She is in

:07:58. > :07:59.

:07:59. > :08:03.third place. This man is currently on a dressage of 42. If he can come

:08:03. > :08:13.inside the time, and he is certainly trying, he could go have

:08:13. > :08:48.

:08:48. > :08:58.behind Sinead galloping. But there medal Kiwi team. She is not going

:08:58. > :09:21.

:09:21. > :09:28.looking so enthusiastic about their work. Here comes the Caroline to

:09:28. > :09:38.New Zealand. They have gone very well. She rode for New Zealand in

:09:38. > :10:08.

:10:08. > :10:18.2006. She is now one of the world's better. Did a great dressage test

:10:18. > :10:27.

:10:27. > :10:30.to. He is wasting no time. Notice how he is looking for clean ground

:10:30. > :10:40.to try and overcome that holding effect that everyone is talking

:10:40. > :10:58.

:10:58. > :11:08.dressage. This is the point on the course where we see whether the

:11:08. > :11:27.

:11:27. > :11:37.out to do, to put the ghost of the four at London behind him. Sinead

:11:37. > :12:13.

:12:13. > :12:18.gapping can't be beaten tonight, machine. I was able to stay pretty

:12:18. > :12:22.fast. I still had to work a bit. Liam Fox pit has the most amazing

:12:22. > :12:32.track record here. This year, he is going for an unprecedented 7th

:12:32. > :12:54.

:12:54. > :12:57.title. Here is a look at how he has top of the three-day event.

:12:57. > :13:05.remember just feeling that he was the most fantastic horse in the

:13:05. > :13:13.world. Keep him steady, not too quick. Gave me a win at Burghley,

:13:13. > :13:17.so he put me on the map. I owe him everything. My second one came with

:13:17. > :13:23.a much younger, less experienced horse. That was a shot out of the

:13:23. > :13:28.blue. He is a young horse, first time at Burghley. I didn't expect

:13:28. > :13:38.to be anything like up there with the winners, let alone being the

:13:38. > :13:38.

:13:39. > :13:47.overall winner. It was the biggest surprise of my life. This was the

:13:47. > :13:53.most consistent horse I have ever had. He is an awkward a horse, but

:13:53. > :13:58.it is brilliant that he won here. He deserved that. Very talented

:13:58. > :14:08.horse, but not one I had ridden a lot. He came here with a patchy

:14:08. > :14:11.

:14:11. > :14:21.record. He has only had this horse for a couple of months. I love that

:14:21. > :14:23.

:14:23. > :14:33.horse. This one won Badminton for me. And he won Burghley, which

:14:33. > :14:49.

:14:49. > :14:59.horse. He just saw around the cross-country and gave me my 6th

:14:59. > :15:09.win. There is no chance. There is no statistic that would say I have

:15:09. > :15:39.

:15:39. > :15:47.line as Calico Joe, held to the right, turned left over the boat -

:15:47. > :15:55.leaving nothing to chance there. A better jump for William this time

:15:55. > :16:05.over the ditch at Discovery Valley. A big jump over the ditch, but he

:16:05. > :16:12.

:16:12. > :16:19.home. That is significant. Could he get two within the time. He still

:16:19. > :16:29.only has two within the time at the moment. A lovely piece of riding. A

:16:29. > :16:37.

:16:37. > :16:42.New Zealander won this title ten neat with his feet. Nicholson, at

:16:42. > :16:49.the last. Is he going to do it? I don't think he's going to quite

:16:49. > :16:52.get there. Oh, look at that! Just missing out. 41.8, but he does go

:16:52. > :17:02.in second place and there's certainly going to be a battle on

:17:02. > :17:15.

:17:15. > :17:18.At the Trout Hatchery. Last year's winner.

:17:19. > :17:28.That will be far from his mind at the moment.

:17:29. > :17:34.

:17:34. > :17:39.Poetry in motion! stick to the new ground, now you

:17:39. > :17:49.are wasting a lot of time crisscrossing across the track to

:17:49. > :17:54.

:17:54. > :17:57.try and find a new bit of grass He gave himself a chance at the

:17:57. > :18:02.Rolex Grand Slam. He did not make it. The only person who has is

:18:02. > :18:07.Pippa Funnell. Galloping up to the Rolex

:18:07. > :18:11.Combination, William will get a look at this time. 19 seconds over.

:18:12. > :18:18.It is possible to do the time from there, but he'll have to have

:18:18. > :18:28.enough horse left on the latter part of the course to do some

:18:28. > :18:43.

:18:43. > :18:49.pretty serious galloping. Took the He made a huge climb last year to

:18:49. > :18:56.finish 14th. What can he do this time? To watch the man is magic.

:18:56. > :19:02.Now 56 years old, but as good as ever. He's just bought himself a

:19:02. > :19:07.brand new centre in Wiltshire. He certainly means to stay here.

:19:07. > :19:16.That will be great for Britain and eventing.

:19:16. > :19:20.So the Olympic legacy in the main arena for Oliver. Look at his time!

:19:20. > :19:30.I wonder if he had gone fast enough. But he's one of the quickest at

:19:30. > :19:36.

:19:36. > :19:42.this point. If the horse has got Has he judged it to a nicety. Will

:19:42. > :19:52.he get a few time penalties and then make his trial to win a

:19:52. > :20:05.

:20:05. > :20:11.he judged this right? He looks pretty relaxed. He has a watch.

:20:11. > :20:17.He'll know his time. This man has certainly judged it right - surely.

:20:17. > :20:24.He'll get within the time. In fact, right on the time. He goes third.

:20:24. > :20:34.He has a great partnership going now with Armada. Showjumping has

:20:34. > :20:36.

:20:36. > :20:41.not been his easy subject, but rider on the course.

:20:42. > :20:51.55 seconds to get home. My word, it will be close!

:20:52. > :20:52.

:20:52. > :20:59.There is no doubt, there's plenty of horse left.

:20:59. > :21:03.I am very privileged to ride him. Andrew Nicholson did four stars on

:21:03. > :21:07.him. He's just a machine. Obviously comes with his difficulties,

:21:07. > :21:11.otherwise I don't think Andrew would have given that talent up. A

:21:11. > :21:16.huge talent to the man that gave it to me and very grateful to the

:21:16. > :21:19.owner as well. Here comes William Fox-Pitt to the

:21:19. > :21:23.last. He's not going to get inside the

:21:23. > :21:33.time. I am sure that will disappoint

:21:33. > :21:43.William. He's on 43.4. He goes third. We'll have a Grandstand

:21:43. > :21:56.

:21:57. > :22:02.Splash. A good demonstration for young

:22:02. > :22:07.riders out there to watch. To be honest, with him, I hoped it

:22:07. > :22:12.would rain a bit more because he could have done another four fences

:22:12. > :22:21.easily. He's a great machine. It is a great ride. They felt the

:22:21. > :22:29.pressure after winning here last year. So far I am relieved he

:22:29. > :22:36.proved what an awesome horse he is. He's in the mix again. Bettina Hoy

:22:36. > :22:46.was amazing. That was an -- Sinead was amazing. That was an

:22:46. > :22:49.

:22:49. > :22:54.now in the time. He is clawing up to 15th place, Mark Todd. What a

:22:54. > :23:04.great finish to an intriguing day. Look down the right-hand side,

:23:04. > :23:14.

:23:15. > :23:19.the competition, hopefully the rain will stay away. Before we get to

:23:19. > :23:22.the showjumping, news of this morning's vet inspection. There are

:23:22. > :23:27.56 horses left after the cross- country. Three this morning have

:23:27. > :23:32.been taken out. The most significant of those is Geoff

:23:32. > :23:37.Curran's horse. They were lying in tenth place. The highest placed of

:23:37. > :23:43.the Irish riders. This morning, at the vet's inspection, he failed to

:23:43. > :23:47.pass at the vets. That means Izzy Taylor on her four-star debut moves

:23:47. > :23:50.into the top ten. Great stuff from her. Andrew Nicholson still has two

:23:50. > :23:55.horses in the top ten. That meant he and his first horse, Calico Joe,

:23:55. > :24:05.had to go out of sequence. Let's see how they got on in the

:24:05. > :24:08.

:24:08. > :24:12.Nicholson, once again he has proved what a master he is of this horse.

:24:12. > :24:18.Two horses in the top ten, as we heard, jumping out of order. At the

:24:18. > :24:28.moment, he is on a score of 53. He's in eighth place.

:24:28. > :24:30.

:24:30. > :24:35.Last year, he got Pitt in the show -- showjumping.

:24:35. > :24:38.He has certainly made them a strong force. They won bronze behind Great

:24:38. > :24:44.Britain. This man very much part of that.

:24:44. > :24:47.Calico Joe has not always had the best reputation in the showjumping

:24:47. > :24:57.phase and jumped the first fence rail. He trailed his legs over the

:24:57. > :25:20.

:25:20. > :25:24.always respect the poles. There'll be no-one better on board than

:25:24. > :25:28.Andrew to try and get the enthusiasm and carefulness into him

:25:29. > :25:35.to try and bring out a clear round. Two down so far. He is interesting.

:25:35. > :25:45.He is a thorough bred. We don't get too many clean-bred horses in the

:25:45. > :26:07.

:26:07. > :26:17.12 to add. Remember he is jumping out of order

:26:17. > :26:21.here. It means those behind him have the door open to go ahead of

:26:21. > :26:25.Andrew Nicholson. Finishes 65 with Calico Joe. This is what it is all

:26:25. > :26:35.about. The final ten riders about to go in the showjumping, starting

:26:35. > :26:43.

:26:43. > :26:48.with Kai Ruder. Let's go back to Ruder. 40 years old. Is a farmer in

:26:48. > :26:52.northern Germany, but is a fegsal rider. He does a lot of his --

:26:52. > :26:58.professional rider. He does a lot of his training.

:26:58. > :27:03.Kai Ruder in 11th place, 22 marks behind, under 22 marks behind the

:27:03. > :27:13.lead. Andrew Nicholson's score of 65 - the best in the Club House so

:27:13. > :27:32.

:27:32. > :27:36.far. This is a horse which was flying throughout the day.

:27:36. > :27:42.Kai Ruder is particularly good in this phase and particularly good

:27:42. > :27:52.under pressure. A little bit of a right drift down

:27:52. > :27:54.

:27:54. > :28:04.don't feel as if you are holding your breath. He is jumping big and

:28:04. > :28:04.

:28:04. > :28:52.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:28:52. > :28:57.He goes on to 62.2. This postbox fence seems to be

:28:57. > :29:01.catchs the riders out. It is right besides the Grandstand and the

:29:01. > :29:08.horses, for some reason, are not reading it very well. They have a

:29:08. > :29:15.long approach to it and that seems to be causing extra hassle.

:29:15. > :29:25.Well, now the young 29-year-old Izzy Taylor. Her grandmother was

:29:25. > :29:35.

:29:35. > :29:39.mare in this class. This is Izzy Taylor's first Burghley. Can she

:29:39. > :29:49.finish off in style? You are right. She was very stylish and very good

:29:49. > :29:49.

:29:49. > :30:32.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:30:32. > :30:42.Kai Ruder, but no more. The time penalties will make things very

:30:42. > :30:43.

:30:43. > :30:46.tight. Yet another one. That fence has come down so many times that

:30:46. > :30:56.the riders are riding a bit defensively. They are jumping

:30:56. > :31:02.

:31:02. > :31:12.immaculate rounds, but they are getting a bit tight. Easy Taylor

:31:12. > :31:26.

:31:26. > :31:36.goes on to 61.3. She will remain in fence was phenomenal. Delighted

:31:36. > :31:46.that it was not too costly. The prize money goes right down the

:31:46. > :32:08.

:32:08. > :32:13.it did not come down. That might help keep him shopper for the rest

:32:13. > :32:20.of the round. It is no bad thing if you can get away with it without

:32:20. > :32:26.the poll coming down. Just a bit tight with his hind legs on the

:32:26. > :32:35.take-off. He is not that experienced at this level. But he

:32:35. > :32:45.is a very good jumper. Caroline is so good at keeping him in balance

:32:45. > :33:16.

:33:16. > :33:23.and in with them in all phases, but two offences are expensive. Mark

:33:23. > :33:28.has already jumped. Such a good round, and just slightly went to

:33:28. > :33:38.pieces at the end. The horse got a little Keane, and those two

:33:38. > :33:38.

:33:38. > :33:48.offences are slightly downhill. It encouraged him to quicken a bit.

:33:48. > :33:48.

:33:48. > :33:55.Those three fences were very expensive for Caroline Powell.

:33:55. > :34:00.Andrew Nicholson comes up a place. Allison Springer came here a few

:34:00. > :34:10.years back and got eliminated. But she has put in a very good

:34:10. > :34:12.

:34:12. > :34:14.performance yesterday. She was second after dressage. The

:34:14. > :34:21.Americans are certainly getting some recompense for their

:34:21. > :34:30.disappointment in London. Another one to give the first fence a hard

:34:30. > :34:35.rubber. If you were watching the cross-country earlier, Allison

:34:35. > :34:38.Springer was giving herself a hard time for not going faster at the

:34:38. > :34:48.beginning of the course, because she said she could not make up the

:34:48. > :34:48.

:34:48. > :34:58.time. But she did look very impressive yesterday. She can

:34:58. > :35:00.

:35:00. > :35:05.afford to have one down and still stay 7th. I have seen this horse a

:35:05. > :35:11.lot in America. He is a very good jumper, but he is robbing a few

:35:11. > :35:21.more polls than you would be comfortable with. But as long as

:35:21. > :35:39.

:35:39. > :35:49.they are just a gentle rubs and not second in Kentucky in the spring,

:35:49. > :35:54.

:35:54. > :36:04.behind William Fox-Pitt. And a second fence down. So, two down.

:36:04. > :36:04.

:36:04. > :36:14.She goes on to 57.2 and stays in seventh place. There is David

:36:14. > :36:14.

:36:14. > :37:12.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:37:12. > :37:19.O'Connor, the manager of the in this phase of the event. He is

:37:19. > :37:25.giving defences lots of height. It is always difficult on this final

:37:25. > :37:35.day, after they have been across the country, to see that they are

:37:35. > :37:37.

:37:37. > :37:47.being careful enough. The ground is holding slightly after a bit of

:37:47. > :37:54.

:37:54. > :38:01.rain. A sad groan after that fence. Whoever comes the first clear round

:38:01. > :38:05.will put the pressure on. He finished in seventh place

:38:05. > :38:10.individually in London and was a key part of the Kiwi bronze-medal

:38:10. > :38:20.team. They were right behind Great Britain. Those first three teams

:38:20. > :38:41.

:38:41. > :38:46.call-up for Australia in London. That was when Megan Jones had to

:38:46. > :38:50.withdraw just 24 hours after having been called up herself. Then sadly,

:38:50. > :38:56.Sam had the misfortune to have a fall and was eliminated. Australia

:38:56. > :39:06.did not have a good Olympics at all in this event. But yesterday put

:39:06. > :39:06.

:39:06. > :40:18.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:40:18. > :40:27.jumping for 11,000. Oh! That was not so good. You heard him saying

:40:27. > :40:37.whoa. The last four fences down, sadly, after a potentially

:40:37. > :40:37.

:40:37. > :40:47.brilliant round. 62.4, with 16 added, so he drops below Jonathan

:40:47. > :40:48.

:40:48. > :40:58.Paget and Allison Springer. The winner here takes home 55,000,

:40:58. > :41:00.

:41:00. > :41:10.with a further 5,000 going to the rider. Disappointment, bad luck. We

:41:10. > :41:12.

:41:12. > :41:17.are now down to that final four. There is one fence between Sinead

:41:17. > :41:24.Halpin and Andrew Nicholson. The next three are all within a fence.

:41:24. > :41:34.This man, who won in 2009, has a serious look on his face. He missed

:41:34. > :41:35.

:41:35. > :41:39.out on London, won in 2009, went very well on this course, Armada,

:41:39. > :41:49.ridden for a number of top seasons by Andrew Nicholson. This was the

:41:49. > :41:57.

:41:57. > :42:02.fourth place. But if he can jump clear, he is not without a chance

:42:02. > :42:08.of winning the Land Rover championship for the second time.

:42:08. > :42:13.It is exciting taking on a horse of this calibre for any rider. Oliver

:42:13. > :42:21.is certainly relishing it. They have struck up a brilliant

:42:21. > :42:24.partnership already. The crowds are jumping with him. I think the horse

:42:24. > :42:34.has a few thousand people on his back. Let's hope it doesn't

:42:34. > :42:38.

:42:38. > :42:42.flattened him. Crikey. Sometimes, he can do that. He has to try and

:42:42. > :42:52.keep calm as a rider and allow the horse to use his head and neck to

:42:52. > :42:56.

:42:56. > :43:00.help balance. That has dropped him below Jonathan Paget. Whatever

:43:00. > :43:08.happens in this round, this is a partnership we will see a lot of in

:43:08. > :43:18.the future. And actually, he stays just above Jonathan Paget. He stays

:43:18. > :43:28.

:43:28. > :43:33.in fourth place. Very close. There was a lot of potential there. I

:43:33. > :43:41.know we had two down, but I think we will seek clear rounds from this

:43:41. > :43:46.partnership. He looks happy. Nail- biting stuff, because there are two

:43:46. > :43:54.pots of gold on offer here now. This man was the winner here last

:43:54. > :43:58.year. He has won it six times. Could he still win it? William Fox-

:43:58. > :44:02.Pitt, with Parklane Hawk, a New Zealand-bred horse that has won his

:44:02. > :44:12.last three major competitions. That was at Kentucky in the spring,

:44:12. > :44:12.

:44:12. > :44:17.early here last year and Blenheim before that. He is on 43.4. That is

:44:17. > :44:21.not two offences behind the leader. A clear round would really put the

:44:21. > :44:29.pressure on. He had a clear round to win last year. If she stays in

:44:29. > :44:34.the top four, he has a chance of taking the top prize for the

:44:34. > :44:40.classics, the lead for all the majors around the world. Andrew

:44:40. > :44:46.Nicholson is a close second. As you say, he did jump a very impressive

:44:46. > :44:55.clear round here last year. He won Kentucky as well in the spring, but

:44:55. > :45:01.he had one down there. He had the luxury of that fence in hand. I

:45:01. > :45:10.think the horse jumps better out of slightly deeper ground. Perhaps I

:45:10. > :45:20.shouldn't say anything! The first one we have seen to hit the gate at

:45:20. > :46:06.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:46:06. > :46:16.Oliver Townend. That has got to Himalayas at least third by 0.1 of

:46:16. > :46:26.

:46:26. > :46:32.is on 51.5. A great jump over the last. A bit

:46:32. > :46:40.of a disappointment there for William. A four-star win, a third

:46:40. > :46:50.and now his with this one. Now the key round for Andrew Nicholson.

:46:50. > :46:50.

:46:50. > :47:00.Andrew, lying in second place. M scored 41.8. He is just one fence,

:47:00. > :47:07.

:47:07. > :47:12.more than one fence behind the Could this be his chance to win it

:47:12. > :47:18.for a third time? A clear round would put the pressure on. It would

:47:18. > :47:24.be great for Andrew to have another win here and, I have to say, from a

:47:24. > :47:30.salvage point of view, it would be great for Rosemary, the owner of

:47:30. > :47:37.this horse, who does so much for horses and has done for years, as

:47:37. > :47:42.far back as 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. There would be such just

:47:42. > :47:47.rewards for her to have a winner at Burghley. A great amount of

:47:47. > :47:57.pressure on him. I am glad I am in the commentary box and not.... Well,

:47:57. > :47:57.

:47:57. > :48:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:48:45. > :48:52.American in the lead, now two 45.8.

:48:52. > :49:00.It's a clear second. William Fox-Pitt - keeps him in

:49:00. > :49:05.third place. That's the fence. William, a couple of fences down

:49:05. > :49:08.today, overall how do you think you did? Overall I am delighted with

:49:08. > :49:13.Park Lane. He's been fantastic. It is frustrating finishing a couple

:49:13. > :49:17.down. He held into his place. He's still in third. What a record he's

:49:17. > :49:22.got! He's just a super horse. I think with more preparation for

:49:22. > :49:26.this year he would have been back to his old best from last year.

:49:27. > :49:33.Actually he felt fantastic and gave me such a great ride yesterday. I

:49:33. > :49:38.am thrilled with third. Well done! Thank you very much. Now the young

:49:38. > :49:46.lady, who has from the start of this competition, lead and lead

:49:46. > :49:56.from the front in style. Sinead Halpin - 30 years old, with this

:49:56. > :50:13.

:50:13. > :50:18.her first Major. Two fences in hand. That's a great comfort to have

:50:18. > :50:22.these two in hand and, as William said n one of his intervals... That

:50:22. > :50:27.is one away. That fence has not been coming down.

:50:27. > :50:29.That's a little bit of a worry for her. William said yesterday, in one

:50:29. > :50:34.of his interviews, that his partnership with the ride of the

:50:34. > :50:38.day and it certainly was. It was so impressive.

:50:38. > :50:48.She has to keep her cool here. She's never been under more

:50:48. > :51:09.

:51:09. > :51:15.are on the borderline now. She can't afford another.

:51:15. > :51:25.Andrew Nicholson on 45.8. Sinead Halpin with four down. She's got

:51:25. > :51:30.

:51:30. > :51:35.the bogey out of the way. She's Andrew Nicholson.

:51:36. > :51:45.APPLAUSE What a pretty. A smile there from

:51:46. > :51:59.

:51:59. > :52:06.Nicholson. His wife there. There is Rosemary Barlow. It is just rewards

:52:06. > :52:16.for the Barlows. She has worked so, so hard for this horse. That means

:52:16. > :52:20.

:52:20. > :52:25.that Andrew Nicholson wins the Land Burghley champion. The third time -

:52:25. > :52:29.fantastic stuff. I am very pleased. It is a few years since I have won

:52:29. > :52:34.a Four Star. It shows you, if you battle on, it all comes right in

:52:34. > :52:44.the end. It does. The other thing is you do need the horse? Exactly.

:52:44. > :52:52.The first run I rode, Calico Joe, it -- it's not her speciality. He

:52:52. > :52:59.had three down bars. Then you hop on a horse like Avavy and it's like

:52:59. > :53:04.a Rolls Royce after the Morris Minor. I have been consistent all

:53:04. > :53:09.year and we have got a win. What is the secret then? You talk about

:53:09. > :53:14.keeping going. How do you keep going? I ride a lot of young horses.

:53:14. > :53:22.I've had them since three years old. That is pretty much what keeps me

:53:22. > :53:27.motivated. You get a buzz out of come petting -- competing them. You

:53:27. > :53:30.have to swallow your pride a bit and carry on with a new one. That

:53:30. > :53:37.is pretty much what keeps me going. Days like today are a bonus.

:53:37. > :53:41.Yesterday we were talking about how Burghley is such a magnificent test

:53:41. > :53:45.of horse and riding - to win it for the third time, to prove you are

:53:45. > :53:49.number one in the world must be pretty special. It is. To win it

:53:49. > :53:53.for the third time is very special. To win it once is very special to.

:53:53. > :53:57.Be number one in the world is a great feeling as well and hopefully

:53:57. > :54:02.I'll come back next year and try for a fourth time. Andrew,

:54:02. > :54:07.congratulations. It has been a pleasure to ride here. What a

:54:07. > :54:12.worthy winner, despite Andrew just missing out on an individual medal.

:54:12. > :54:22.Remember, he was fourth individually in winning team bronze.

:54:22. > :54:22.

:54:22. > :55:05.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds

:55:05. > :55:10.Now, here at Burghley, he has won performance over the event? Yeah, I

:55:10. > :55:16.mean showjumping, you never now how they are feeling. He tried really

:55:16. > :55:20.hard. I don't know. I getsdz he was a bit tired. -- I guess he was a

:55:20. > :55:25.bit tired. You said two good phases so far, if you don't get it right

:55:25. > :55:29.in the showjumping you will go and work harder? Exactly! Every time

:55:29. > :55:33.you leave these things and you have a mistake or two, you come away

:55:33. > :55:38.stronger and with more knowledge and things to work on. I am so

:55:38. > :55:43.proud of my horse and... We'll just try harder next time. I know you

:55:43. > :55:47.must be a little disappointed, surely you will think second place

:55:47. > :55:53.of bury, after the disappointment of the Olympics is a pretty good

:55:53. > :56:00.thing. I am disappointed, but... Next year. Next year. You will stay

:56:00. > :56:03.in front all the way. Yeah. Thank you. Well done. Thank you. Well,

:56:03. > :56:13.confirmation of that standings after the first final here at

:56:13. > :56:20.

:56:20. > :56:24.Burghley. That of course is the one point, ahead of New Zealand's

:56:24. > :56:28.Andrew Nicholson, with Allison Springer going into third place and

:56:28. > :56:33.the Olympic champion fourth in 2012. So what a dramatic conclusion to

:56:33. > :56:38.this year's event. It is Andrew Nicholson, 12 years after his last

:56:38. > :56:45.triumph here who has come out on top. Time now for the presentation.

:56:45. > :56:48.Andrew Nicholson steps up for the third time to receive this most

:56:48. > :56:52.prestigious trophy. Being congratulated there by the

:56:52. > :56:58.President of the Land Rover Burghley horse triels. Together

:56:58. > :57:01.with her husband, Orlando. Our great hosts here and accompanied by

:57:01. > :57:06.the managing director of Jaguar Land Rover UK.

:57:06. > :57:10.What a proud moment for Andrew. He has waited 12 years to win it again.

:57:10. > :57:15.He goes to the number one in the world. That's it for this year's

:57:15. > :57:19.The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. It is New Zealand who are
