:00:27. > :00:34.Hello, and welcome to Burghley, this gorgeous estate in the heart of the

:00:34. > :00:41.Lincolnshire countryside. It is home to one of the great three-day events

:00:41. > :00:43.will stop it is an autumn classic, the Burghley Horse Trials. The

:00:43. > :00:49.riders come because this is one of the Burghley Horse Trials. The

:00:49. > :00:53.the big ones. We have a field of 67 from 11 different nations. It is a

:00:53. > :01:00.star-studded line-up for a Star event, and it includes five former

:01:00. > :01:10.winners. The ultimate event, William Fox-Pitt, brings Falklands Park. The

:01:10. > :01:15.great thing about Burghley is that there was always a new challenge.

:01:15. > :01:20.There are always new fences. Mark Phillips is a very good course

:01:20. > :01:24.designer, and we believe in him. Andrew Nicholson from New Zealand

:01:24. > :01:29.has been unstuck bubble since his victory last year here on Avebury,

:01:29. > :01:35.and has two other rides. Avebury feels great. It is great to be back

:01:35. > :01:43.here again. Amada, once ridden by Andrew, is now in the care of Oliver

:01:43. > :01:48.Townend, who will want to improve on his fourth place last year. In the

:01:48. > :01:54.last two years I have managed to be in the top 43 times. It used to be a

:01:54. > :01:58.bit of bugs me, but now we have that out of the way, I look forward to

:01:58. > :02:08.it. Another Burnley legend, Sir Mark Todd, brings a lower and ravens tied

:02:08. > :02:12.to the party. It is a beautiful setting. The course is always

:02:12. > :02:19.challenging, and it is always a great fun and relaxed event. The

:02:19. > :02:28.only rider to win the Rolex Grand Slam in 2003, Pippa Funnell rides

:02:28. > :02:34.her 12-year-old horse. It is lovely to be here, especially with a horse

:02:34. > :02:40.that I think a lot of. Anything can happen. Every fence you come to you

:02:40. > :02:45.think, really? Will they jump this? Yes, they will. The riders are

:02:45. > :02:51.saying, we know it is Burghley. There has not been a course as big

:02:51. > :02:52.as this for years. Even though the riders are global superstars, there

:02:52. > :02:57.are two macro riders for whom this riders are global superstars, there

:02:57. > :03:03.is a first. Ingrid Klimke is fresh the home individual silver at Malmo

:03:03. > :03:09.in the European Championships. She is on searing form and looking

:03:09. > :03:14.forward to a new challenge. I have never been in Burghley before, so I

:03:14. > :03:19.am very excited. It is one of the most lovely causes I have ever seen.

:03:19. > :03:26.Definitely it is impressive. When I walked it yesterday, I thought,

:03:26. > :03:32.these jobs are really high! It is a once-in-a-lifetime show, that every

:03:32. > :03:38.rider is streaming of. Now, I practice to 16, so I said to

:03:38. > :03:44.myself, it is this year, or do not wait too long. And this year 's new

:03:44. > :03:49.sensation Jock Padget, winner of Badminton, who will be looking to

:03:49. > :03:54.bag Burghley for New Zealand. It is another big event. I would like to

:03:54. > :03:59.be able to have the opportunity to another big event. I would like to

:03:59. > :04:03.win a Grand Slam. I have come here with two very good, very experienced

:04:03. > :04:08.horses, and I hope to get a good place with both of them. A top-level

:04:09. > :04:13.event rider needs the right horses and the right kit. I wanted to show

:04:13. > :04:18.you the equipment that is specific for dressage. The saddle is

:04:18. > :04:23.different, much longer side panels with support here for the leg.

:04:23. > :04:30.Support for the back, keeping everything in position. The bit has

:04:30. > :04:31.to be quite simple. You are only allowed in the horses mouth a

:04:31. > :04:37.to be quite simple. You are only snaffle, or this, a French bit. The

:04:37. > :04:44.only other option is a double bridle, which means to bits in the

:04:44. > :04:54.mouth, but also two Rains in the hand. Then you have this very

:04:54. > :04:59.elegant long tail coat, the boots, and the Spurs. And this top hat.

:04:59. > :05:06.Let's see who impressed the judges the most.

:05:06. > :05:15.A great record, and her riding style much admired by her fellow

:05:15. > :05:20.competitors. Ingrid was bred to be a dressage star. Her father was many

:05:21. > :05:25.years ago. She has been brought up in this classic German dressage

:05:25. > :05:30.style. She writes beautifully. What I like most about Ingrid is she

:05:30. > :05:35.rides in a very sympathetic way. Her horses always look very relaxed and

:05:35. > :05:41.go very kindly for her. She's got a great figure and looks great on a

:05:41. > :06:01.horse. She is great to watch. She is the epitome of what dressage sued

:06:01. > :06:03.being about. She sits very well, and the epitome of what dressage sued

:06:03. > :06:06.any horse she sits on produces a fantastic test. On day two, the

:06:06. > :06:10.crowds enjoyed a solid display from Parklane Hawk and William Fox-Pitt.

:06:10. > :06:15.Kiwi Andrew Nicholson, here to defend his 2012 title, is the first

:06:15. > :06:27.competitor to ride three horses at Burghley. His best test came from

:06:27. > :06:34.Nereo. He finished in third place. Fellow Kiwi and badminton champion,

:06:34. > :06:39.Jonathan Padget, scored a more than respectable 42 penalties on his

:06:39. > :06:43.first ride, Clifton Marsh. On Clifton Promise, he displayed a

:06:43. > :06:51.wonderful test, to be the man of the moment. He is a great guy, and he is

:06:51. > :06:57.really shining at the minute. He has worked really hard, and it is his

:06:57. > :07:03.temperament as a whole. It has not gone to his head at all. He has a

:07:03. > :07:08.very natural way of sitting on the horse. Horses seem to understand him

:07:08. > :07:16.very well, and perform very, very well for him. He rode the test of

:07:16. > :07:30.his life to storm into the lead on a score of 36.7. All very close. The

:07:30. > :07:34.top 11 only 7.5 marks apart. Fox-Pitt, Andrew Nicholson and

:07:34. > :07:41.Oliver Townend all former champions. The top 20 also includes

:07:41. > :07:45.stars such as Mark Todd, Andrew Nicholson and the great Pippa

:07:45. > :07:49.Funnell. Some beautiful tests there. They

:07:49. > :07:54.will admit that this is a competition that will not be won on

:07:54. > :07:59.dressage alone. The crowds pouring in their thousands all year round to

:07:59. > :08:03.see Burghley house. They are magnified in September, and this is

:08:04. > :08:09.why they come. Captain Phillips has come up with a really big and

:08:09. > :08:14.testing cross country course again. Riders go into the arena as early as

:08:14. > :08:22.fence fall. There are big isolated challenges, as well as combination

:08:22. > :08:26.fences that test a rider's and a horse's balance. They have 11.5

:08:26. > :08:32.minutes to complete it. It is about 4.5 miles in length. Let's find out

:08:32. > :08:42.minutes to complete it. It is about what some of the leading contenders

:08:42. > :08:46.make of it. We have just left the main arena. We have galloped down

:08:46. > :08:51.the hill, pass the ditch on the right, which caused -- which could

:08:51. > :09:00.cause a problem. You could lose your horse's attention. Here we are at

:09:00. > :09:08.the first element, a and B. It is a seriously tall hedge, very narrow,

:09:08. > :09:14.on quite a severe angle. The horses are not 100% concentrating and might

:09:14. > :09:19.dodge past here. If you jump that successfully, we will land about

:09:19. > :09:30.here. It is four of my strides for every one of the horses. One two,

:09:30. > :09:38.three, four. It is for strides for the horses. The element is this big

:09:38. > :09:46.white table, so it is a big combination of different questions,

:09:46. > :09:49.and I think it could cause problems. This year, we have done discovery

:09:49. > :09:56.Valerie first, and the first option is which trees you go through. --

:09:56. > :10:05.Discovery Valley Return. Then we have quite a way before the huge

:10:05. > :10:09.drop into that leaf pit, which we all get so worried about that the

:10:09. > :10:14.horses are suddenly going to get that shock. From here, I want to

:10:14. > :10:19.leave the horse alone, and then at the halfway point between the two

:10:19. > :10:23.fences, we need to be killing the speed, slowing them down, because

:10:23. > :10:27.they have to have time to look and see what they are going to do. You

:10:27. > :10:32.can come straight in the middle. The drop might be a bit bigger. I like

:10:32. > :10:37.the option of being a little bit to the left. Allow them to use their

:10:37. > :10:49.necks, and allow them to look. Keep the leg of there. Then up and out

:10:49. > :10:54.over. So we have left the leaf pit, galloped 25 more seconds, and we are

:10:54. > :11:01.back here at discovery Valley. We are here at sense eight. Narrow

:11:01. > :11:06.hedge over the bonnet. We will jump that at the angle and run down this

:11:06. > :11:13.hill with about three strides to the angled ditch here. We hop across the

:11:14. > :11:20.angled ditch, land around here, and do three strides on a curving line

:11:20. > :11:27.to two further angled hedges, with one stride in between. I think the

:11:27. > :11:36.crowd are seriously going to get their money 's worth. This starts

:11:36. > :11:41.with fence number 12 over there. Quite a strong gallop up the hill,

:11:41. > :11:49.before you reduce the speed and set the horse up, and then push enough

:11:49. > :11:55.that it is a nice forward jump fluently through the first water

:11:55. > :12:01.here. You have enough momentum, and I look at the windows and try to

:12:01. > :12:06.approach fence number 13) point. Already my eyes at the corner, but I

:12:07. > :12:18.try to ride it strong enough for a straight. I hope to land here. Now I

:12:18. > :12:25.start my turn, first stride. Second. And third stride. Now my eye is

:12:25. > :12:30.totally focused on the mushroom behind the fence. I must make sure

:12:30. > :12:35.that I close the door here, really sit in the saddle, and make sure

:12:35. > :12:38.there is absolutely no chance of a run on the right-hand side. From

:12:39. > :12:46.here, you just gallop out of the water, pick your horse, and be happy

:12:46. > :12:49.you have made it. Just past halfway. Our horses should be on the job

:12:49. > :12:56.right now, but I think they will need a bit of a breather. The

:12:56. > :13:02.important part is to get our line right. I will come round the turn

:13:02. > :13:06.here, make sure I line up early. Not too fast, but strong, and then wait

:13:06. > :13:12.for the moment to press the force in. It is important that the horse

:13:12. > :13:18.understands that he jumps this first. Then I'm going to land, and

:13:18. > :13:25.almost ride this fence as if I am on a bike. I will open my left frame,

:13:25. > :13:32.and lead my horse into the next fence into strides. Hopefully, we

:13:32. > :13:36.have the jump we want here. I think the turn here is a little bit

:13:36. > :13:44.unrealistic to keep a nice bend. I think we need to lean your horse

:13:44. > :13:48.into it a bit. One two, 3... One stride. And I think the experienced

:13:48. > :13:55.horses will start to look on a little bit here. So you will not

:13:55. > :14:00.have to do too much. Lean a bit like a bike. Because the fences are on an

:14:00. > :14:07.angle, you have a couple of options. You can cut in a bit more if you

:14:07. > :14:13.need to take away room. Now we come to fence 19. I think it is one of

:14:13. > :14:17.the hardest on the course. We have just had a long gallop to get here.

:14:17. > :14:21.The ground suddenly rises very steep, which is difficult to judge

:14:21. > :14:28.the distance to this very wide triple brush arrowhead. This is a

:14:29. > :14:34.serious offence and will take a lot of jumping, and you land on the flat

:14:35. > :14:40.ground. Then it is suddenly running away, and you have a sharp term.

:14:40. > :14:44.ground. Then it is suddenly running Then there is another one of these

:14:44. > :14:49.triple brush skinny arrowheads, just as tough as the first one. This is a

:14:49. > :14:57.serious question which will need us as riders to be really accurate. The

:14:57. > :15:01.kit for cross country is completely different, you have boots on, the

:15:01. > :15:07.riders are riding much shorter, the saddle is flatter at the back. The

:15:07. > :15:12.control is all-important. Andrew Nicholson is wearing his crash hat

:15:12. > :15:16.and a back protector. The grease on the front legs is so that if a horse

:15:16. > :15:21.gets close to a fence and they wrap it, they are likely to slide over

:15:21. > :15:27.rather than raise the skin -- and they rub it. The riders will wear

:15:27. > :15:31.one stopwatch which will beep every minute so they know they are in the

:15:31. > :15:36.right place and that they are going fast enough. Great conditions here,

:15:36. > :15:40.a slight breeze, it is bright, a big crowd gathering, let's see how they

:15:41. > :15:55.get on. Andrew Nicholson is out early.

:15:55. > :16:00.Andrew is one of the best at cross country, he never looked like he is

:16:00. > :16:06.in a hurry, he is away is very fast, always right on the button

:16:06. > :16:12.further time -- for the time but never looks horrid. It is good he

:16:12. > :16:15.has -- never looks hurried. It is good he has a horse going early

:16:15. > :16:21.because they can all watch and see how you do it.

:16:22. > :16:30.Three-time winner Andrew Nicholson. A very good horse that has some

:16:30. > :16:37.great form. Away from the hurdles in the arena. Now we go down to the

:16:37. > :16:46.discovery of. -- the Discovery Valley Return. There is an awkward

:16:46. > :16:53.globe coming out of the first combination. This will be the first

:16:53. > :17:00.real test on the course combination. This will be the first

:17:00. > :17:05.Nicholson comes down on Calico Joe, a horse that he owns himself. He

:17:05. > :17:13.took a slow route there but Andrew is showing competitors that the

:17:13. > :17:21.quick route is very possible. Now up to the Classics Leaf Pit. This has

:17:21. > :17:24.been in over many years since it started in 1961. A big drop down

:17:24. > :17:28.into the bottom and then two alternatives, not a lot of time

:17:28. > :17:36.between these roll tops, I think they will follow the yellow route.

:17:36. > :17:39.Again, I think Andrew will be taking the quick route. Calico Joe,

:17:39. > :17:43.Again, I think Andrew will be taking thoroughbred horse, very quick

:17:43. > :18:13.across the country. Wasting no time to the

:18:13. > :18:20.the angle and then two or three strides. Three strides and then one

:18:20. > :18:26.stride. A bit hesitant, took the flag out, the riders will be glad to

:18:26. > :18:32.see Andrew through there. Looking very relaxed, he is such a good man

:18:32. > :18:38.as judgement of pace. Many think the optimum time is difficult here. The

:18:38. > :18:43.first part of the course will be slower but it is whether they can

:18:43. > :18:44.make up the time. Mark Phillips is certainly trying to slow the riders

:18:44. > :18:58.down. Now we are at the famous trout

:18:58. > :19:03.hatchery. Over two houses on difficult undulating ground and then

:19:03. > :19:15.onto a big corner. It saves a lot of time. It is quite a tricky approach

:19:15. > :19:20.to this trout hatchery. Down asleep slope that McRae steep slope and

:19:20. > :19:28.then a big drop. -- down a steep slope. And then committed onto the

:19:28. > :19:33.corner. That will encourage the riders. He had a little stumble in

:19:33. > :19:39.that second part. Now the man who has won this title six times in all,

:19:39. > :19:48.William Fox-Pitt on the first of two rides, Neuf des Coeurs, the French

:19:48. > :19:54.horse who was placed here in 2011. The Maltings combination. Andrew

:19:54. > :20:03.coming to gallop right through the middle of the combination. He is a

:20:03. > :20:08.large red table, a committed five strides to a little skinny upright.

:20:08. > :20:12.He is going to jump right to left, give yourself four strides before

:20:12. > :20:17.this incredibly difficult corner. Calico Joe looking pretty confident.

:20:17. > :20:28.When you turn back over this large, wide oxen. He just pumps it, this is

:20:28. > :20:35.a huge fence. Moving very easily indeed, looking to certainly make

:20:35. > :20:40.good time. Is it enough? He is down, how much is he down? This is about

:20:40. > :20:47.the halfway point on the course as he comes to the Rolex Combination.

:20:47. > :20:52.He is down 13 seconds. We always expected that happen. They have got

:20:52. > :20:57.to make time up later, hopefully. A sharp angle over a ditch and swing

:20:57. > :21:01.round in two strides to the brush. The brush is quite forgiving but a

:21:01. > :21:06.tricky combination. We are now at the dairy farm, it is fence 19 on

:21:06. > :21:14.the cross-country course and it splits over two narrow ones, those

:21:14. > :21:20.triple brushes. The red goes round and round. The once you have gone

:21:21. > :21:26.short are well on their way to the Cottesmore Leap. The riders asked to

:21:26. > :21:30.get these fences lowered because they were enormous. Interestingly

:21:30. > :21:34.enough it looks as though Andrew Nicholson has decided to take the

:21:34. > :21:38.long route. That will be influential for the competitors later on.

:21:38. > :21:44.Slightly more time-consuming but definitely much safer. He swings

:21:44. > :21:50.back around the tree, wasting not much time. Only five or six seconds

:21:50. > :21:54.in that. William Fox-Pitt, meanwhile, Neuf des Coeurs, 18th in

:21:54. > :22:15.2011. Oh, Jini is -- he catches that with

:22:15. > :22:22.his knee, good job it was brush. This enormous ditch, the Cottesmore

:22:22. > :22:38.Leap, it is an easy jump for this course. -- for this horse. He is

:22:38. > :22:44.cantering and wastes not a second, another man who is so good at

:22:44. > :22:54.judging his pace. Getting towards home now, capabilities cutting.

:22:54. > :23:04.There is a choice, Andrew takes the left-hand route. It is really

:23:04. > :23:10.riders' preference. Now William Fox-Pitt, back with nerve to cap the

:23:10. > :23:20.Discovery Valley Return. -- back with Neuf des Coeurs. Woody get some

:23:20. > :23:26.confidence from that. Wasn't so proficient in the early part of the

:23:26. > :23:32.course. -- William will get so much confidence from that. A bit of a

:23:32. > :23:40.struggle there, down to this week oxen are -- to this big boxer. He

:23:40. > :23:51.has a minute and a half to get home, he will be pushing it. An easy jump

:23:51. > :23:56.into the water. A lovely rhythm. The balance is great and the quick route

:23:56. > :24:03.is to the ghosts. You can see the brush fence -- route is to the

:24:03. > :24:13.goose. Going under the Lion Bridge Double

:24:13. > :24:24.which hasn't been used for a number of years. The horse is still full of

:24:24. > :24:29.running. He certainly is, here we have William at the trout hatchery,

:24:29. > :24:34.down that hill. The riders are having to work hard to get over that

:24:34. > :24:40.house, the horses have backed off a little bit. Then three strides to

:24:40. > :24:45.the brush corner. I think William got four in there, more of a curving

:24:45. > :24:50.line. Andrew Nicholson, driving for the finish, he is going to get

:24:50. > :24:57.inside with Calico Joe, the horse that he owns. They riders will find

:24:57. > :25:00.this most encouraging, but they won't all go as well as this man. He

:25:00. > :25:13.has set the target, 48.3. They have got a very strong team

:25:13. > :25:18.here. Now we see 33-year-old Piggy French, a new horse for her.

:25:18. > :25:28.Westwood Mariner. Twice been around this course. The first time with

:25:28. > :25:32.this very talented rider. He is pretty much the guinea pig comedy

:25:32. > :25:36.has done job well. I used him quick on the first half, he has got a lot

:25:36. > :25:41.more gallop than that but at the same time he felt like he was doing

:25:41. > :25:43.it very comfortably. When I told him to pick it up in the second half,

:25:43. > :26:00.off he went. big, striding horse. Doesn't look as

:26:00. > :26:04.though he is in a hurry, it'll be interesting to know time of this

:26:04. > :26:09.course. William is very good at cruising round, never looking as if

:26:09. > :26:17.he is in a hurry and always making the time. William just looking

:26:17. > :26:21.down, he is a little uncomfortable about something. Nothing wrong

:26:21. > :26:29.down, he is a little uncomfortable there, though. The horse is still

:26:29. > :26:36.jumping, that is official. -- that is for sure. Piggy French coming

:26:36. > :26:40.down to the return journey through discovery of.

:26:40. > :26:52.Oh! That is really so unlucky. The horse drops his hind legs in the

:26:52. > :26:58.ditch. He does. Piggy did nothing wrong. He jumps the brush well,

:26:58. > :27:05.three strides down to this big angled ditch. His hind leg just

:27:05. > :27:13.slips off the edge, into the ditch. He just rejects poor Piggy. They

:27:13. > :27:17.missed out on the Olympics and the Europeans recently. Here is a man

:27:17. > :27:26.who has not missed out, the Badminton winner on the first of his

:27:26. > :27:32.two rides. Jock is cross-country riding, he has got natural flair,

:27:32. > :27:36.natural talent. Slightly different style to some. He would stay a

:27:36. > :27:41.little bit more forward in the way he writes. -- he rides. An amazing

:27:41. > :27:55.judgement of speed. This man is a future star of this

:27:55. > :27:58.sport, without doubt. Now to a man who has been welcomed one on the

:27:58. > :28:06.number of occasions, one of Britain's best ever event riders,

:28:06. > :28:10.William Fox-Pitt on Neuf des Coeurs. He is taking the quick route, going

:28:10. > :28:14.under the tree, coming across the corner of the second triple brush,

:28:14. > :28:24.takes the flag out but makes it look easy. John Padgett, Clifton Lush,

:28:24. > :28:26.coming to this very open triple bar. This is a man who is going for

:28:26. > :28:54.another Neatly down, beautifully written.

:28:54. > :28:57.Very positive start through the Leith pet -- the

:28:57. > :29:04.the world and their dog is here, huge crowd.

:29:04. > :29:12.This is one of the rising stars of the British inventing -- eventing

:29:12. > :29:16.scene. This is Dry Old Party, we will see how he gets on on the

:29:16. > :29:22.cross-country after finding out more about him. I am Tom McEwen. I first

:29:22. > :29:27.sat on a horse at the age of two, being held on tightly by my mother.

:29:27. > :29:32.From there I was given up only to go in venting on. I am very much into

:29:32. > :29:34.sports I am very active. I have always loved rugby, that has been a

:29:34. > :29:40.sports I am very active. I have big passion. If you see people like

:29:40. > :29:45.Andrew Nicholson, like you said in his horse and hound article, he is

:29:45. > :29:49.training just as much as any other athlete, he is on the rowing

:29:49. > :29:53.machine, watching his diet, it is a very important. I was very lucky

:29:53. > :30:02.when I left school after my A-levels to go down to William's kennels. I

:30:02. > :30:05.started breaking horses which has been so helpful for cross-country

:30:05. > :30:10.riding. More than that they taught me to think about the horse's

:30:10. > :30:14.brain. Before that I was a bit slapdash. It has made me understand

:30:14. > :30:22.what I am doing, every horses individual, no different to a

:30:22. > :30:24.person. I got given Dry Old Party, which has led to my experience at a

:30:24. > :30:29.very young age, which has been which has led to my experience at a

:30:29. > :30:35.slickly fantastic and I have loved every second. -- absolutely

:30:35. > :30:36.fantastic. I could not have been luckier when Mark Todd bought this

:30:36. > :30:42.yard and I was allowed to stay luckier when Mark Todd bought this

:30:42. > :30:45.He is a legend of the sport. The way of doing things and the day-to-day

:30:45. > :30:49.routine, I have learned so much already. It is not just mark you I

:30:49. > :30:53.have learned from. He has some of the best girls helping on the yard.

:30:53. > :30:56.have learned from. He has some of I have learned some much about

:30:57. > :31:01.stable management, which is just as important as the rest of it for me.

:31:01. > :31:05.Competing at the top level, it is what you dream of when you are

:31:05. > :31:09.younger, whether it be the senior team at the Olympics, worlds all

:31:09. > :31:19.Europeans going around Badminton or Burghley, it is extremely exciting

:31:19. > :31:25.and as butterflies going. 22-year-old Tom McEwen. News in that

:31:25. > :31:31.William Fox-Pitt has retired. Lost a shoe and has pulled out. Here is one

:31:31. > :31:42.that has certainly not pulled out. Galloping well. A huge jump there.

:31:42. > :31:51.Looks like abyssal bit of lard in the horse's nostril there. -- looks

:31:51. > :31:56.like a little bit of blood. Here is Tom McEwen on Dry Old Party. Road

:31:56. > :32:03.very well last year to finish in the top 20. Beautifully through there.

:32:03. > :32:14.That's a great start from this young man. He was as good as any in the

:32:15. > :32:17.main arena there. Turned out to prove his worth after the

:32:17. > :32:20.disappointment of the European Championships. Massive crowds

:32:21. > :32:31.everywhere on this course. He didn't get the shot he wanted. He

:32:31. > :32:40.is in trouble. Can he hang on? Surely he can't get back from

:32:40. > :32:47.there. And the horse accelerating away. That was real speed hitting

:32:47. > :32:51.the ground there. Perhaps he did better not holding on. The horse

:32:51. > :32:55.just caught it in front. Tom lost his reins. He had no chance of

:32:55. > :33:00.just caught it in front. Tom lost getting back. Hangs on for all he is

:33:00. > :33:06.worth and really, really tries. You have got to admire him for that, but

:33:06. > :33:12.the inevitable is going to happen. When your luck is out, it is really

:33:12. > :33:16.out. There was real hope for Tom. Now back with Jonathan Padget on

:33:16. > :33:24.Clifton Lush. Had a problem here last year. I think he will put that

:33:24. > :33:29.behind him. Three strides was a long way off that corner. Didn't get the

:33:29. > :33:35.best strike at the house in the middle, so really had to open the

:33:35. > :33:41.horse up. The horse wanders about. He takes the stride. Well done. The

:33:41. > :33:46.last we saw of Tom McEwen he was having quite a nasty fall. Luckily,

:33:46. > :33:50.you are fine. What happened? It is very rarely the horse's fault, and

:33:50. > :33:58.this time it was definitely my fault. Sadly, I couldn't quite save

:33:58. > :34:04.it. I did my best to save it, and it got a bit quicker each time. A bit

:34:04. > :34:09.of bad luck and a bit of a bad run, but apparently it is character

:34:09. > :34:12.building! Is that what everyone is telling you? Yes. Whether I believe

:34:12. > :34:16.building! Is that what everyone is it or not is a different matter! The

:34:16. > :34:26.very experienced German here. At the it or not is a different matter! The

:34:26. > :34:35.very top of the sport, including Badminton. One an Olympic gold medal

:34:35. > :34:39.in 2008 on this horse. Clifton Lush still galloping well. You can see

:34:39. > :34:45.that red on his nostril, but it doesn't seem to be getting any

:34:45. > :34:49.worse, or affecting the horse. I would be very surprised if the grand

:34:49. > :34:54.jury don't bring him up, in this clean sport here are brought on by

:34:54. > :35:03.the International Federation. The rules have been used. The horse is

:35:03. > :35:10.in cracking form. He went beautifully through there. Andreas

:35:10. > :35:18.Dibowski lost out on the European team gold medal in Malmo. But this

:35:18. > :35:21.is a horse that went to the Olympic Games with a Thai rider. Hasn't

:35:21. > :35:33.really found its form since it has been back. Up to the dairy mount for

:35:33. > :35:35.Jock. There is a very clear note there of that blood. We are hearing

:35:35. > :35:41.Jock. There is a very clear note news that the grand jury are going

:35:41. > :35:46.to pull him up. That is drama. They will pull him up, the vets will have

:35:46. > :35:54.a look, and if they are happy he will go on again. We will have to

:35:54. > :36:00.wait and see. Andreas Dibowski the most experienced international there

:36:00. > :36:04.is in Germany. This second part of the hollow is much more difficult

:36:04. > :36:09.than the first. A big jump over the ditch. That was a little bit of a

:36:09. > :36:14.dirty stop there from the horse. He has not been the easiest of horses

:36:14. > :36:19.over ditches. Andreas was just hanging on to the contact, and the

:36:19. > :36:25.horse just lost his balance. I don't think there was any need for that

:36:25. > :36:33.stock. The horse just let him down there. Over the second attempt quite

:36:33. > :36:39.nicely. Meanwhile, Jock Padget looks in a hurry. He has been stopped, but

:36:39. > :36:45.they will have stopped the clock. He looks to be making good advantage of

:36:45. > :36:51.that. Yes, you can see a tiny bit of blood, but the nose is cleaner. So

:36:51. > :36:56.the grand juror obviously happy with it. He is flying now. No long-term

:36:56. > :37:06.effect of that blood at all, obviously. Andreas Dibowski top of

:37:06. > :37:13.the world rankings for Germany. He has got that 20 jumping penalties in

:37:13. > :37:20.the Discovery Valley. And he gallops straight past. It looks to me if he

:37:20. > :37:26.thinks his chance is gone. Up goes the hand, and out goes Andreas

:37:26. > :37:33.Dibowski. Now Ingrid Klimke, the First Lady of German eventing. Butts

:37:33. > :37:39.Abraxxas. Never been here before, but been a big horse in the German

:37:39. > :37:50.success ever since those worlds in 2006.

:37:50. > :38:05.This is a horse that we have seen quite a lot of. Quirinal de la

:38:05. > :38:11.Bastide. And Clifton Lush, he is a long one at that first boat. He has

:38:11. > :38:16.obviously got an eye on the clock. Difficult when you have been stopped

:38:16. > :38:25.on the course. You do not stop the watch on your wrist. Get very

:38:25. > :38:33.confused about the timing. Leans forward, kept his balance well

:38:33. > :38:40.there. Well ridden. The French are back to form. They won the bronze in

:38:40. > :38:47.the Malmo Europeans. Is this going to be number two inside the time

:38:47. > :38:51.now? Jock Padget on Clifton Lush. He got inside the time, which means he

:38:51. > :38:57.will stay on his dressage score of 42. That is the score to beat in the

:38:57. > :39:10.early stages of this Burghley cross-country. How well does that

:39:10. > :39:16.horse finish? Ingrid at the Leith pit. Very fast across the country.

:39:16. > :39:27.She takes the tightest line into that pretty big round table. She's

:39:27. > :39:30.in a hurry! Jock Padget got stopped out on the

:39:30. > :39:36.course by the vet and then restarted. What happened? Early on,

:39:36. > :39:40.he jumped the Elephant Trap quite awkwardly, and I wonder if he bumped

:39:40. > :39:44.his nose, because there was a bit of blood. The vet looked and said that

:39:44. > :39:50.it looked as though he had just bumped it, so good to go. You go

:39:50. > :39:54.into the lead on this horse. Obviously, Clifton Promise to still

:39:54. > :40:03.to come. Are you looking forward to riding him? I always look forward to

:40:03. > :40:08.riding him. I need to think about my plan now. I need to forget about it

:40:08. > :40:14.now, and move on. Always looking forward to it. Coming back to Ingrid

:40:14. > :40:20.now, and move on. Always looking on Butts Abraxxas. Not got a huge

:40:21. > :40:29.stride, this horse. Keeps motoring at the fences. Click -- quick and

:40:29. > :40:38.sharp as any through there. Crowe now the lab. -- Quirinal de la

:40:38. > :40:47.Bastide. He was in that team that went so well. The French winning the

:40:47. > :40:52.team bronze in the Malmo Europeans. Going the correct way at the dairy

:40:52. > :41:03.mount, and does that as well as anyone. A because, this. -- a big

:41:03. > :41:09.horse, this. Andrew Nicholson one in style with Rosemary and Mark

:41:09. > :41:23.Fellows. He is right on target to try and win the title again. Safely

:41:23. > :41:30.away, Andrew Nicholson on Avebury. Ingrid at the gives him a little

:41:30. > :41:35.reminder there. She wasn't happy with that jump, wants him to keep

:41:35. > :41:41.going here. Those three strides were quite long for him. Crikey, she was

:41:41. > :41:47.lucky there! I don't know what the horse was thinking. It jumped into

:41:48. > :41:53.the water, took the stride too far off. Tried it anyway. He could have

:41:53. > :42:01.put another stride in. Ploughed all over the fence, but they survived.

:42:01. > :42:07.That is a very good time. Seventh at the end of dressage. This horse is

:42:07. > :42:17.one of the best in the world now. Bred by Andrew himself. Ingrid

:42:17. > :42:22.coming up to the malt in, just back from a brilliant silver medal

:42:22. > :42:26.individually at the European Championships. Team gold for the

:42:26. > :42:38.Germans. A very exciting young horse. This horse has been such a

:42:38. > :42:46.star. Sometimes looks a bit hit and miss, as we saw in the trout at, but

:42:46. > :42:56.my word, they are quick! Germany are right in the hunt for this title.

:42:56. > :43:05.Discovery Valley for Avebury. He has been here. He knows what to expect.

:43:05. > :43:12.That was quite brilliant. That could have been a gymnastic exercise in

:43:12. > :43:18.the arena at home. One to emulate. Another chance to check the time of

:43:18. > :43:26.Ingrid Klimke. She's down with Butts Abraxxas. Her father originally

:43:26. > :43:31.started with eventing, one silver medal at Harwood and other

:43:31. > :43:36.international events. Then became the worlds most famous dressage

:43:36. > :43:41.rider. Her daughter following in his footsteps. A beautiful demonstration

:43:41. > :43:45.of how to that Rolex Combination. She is down on the clock, but looks

:43:45. > :43:54.to have enough horse to catch it out. A big, striding horse. Got

:43:55. > :44:07.close to the rail, but still sharp in front. Still only two inside the

:44:07. > :44:13.time. This man, his first ride Calico Joe. You see them looking so

:44:13. > :44:24.strong. This combination literally cruising. The win here started off

:44:25. > :44:33.such a purple patch for this man. The big pot is more leap. Butts

:44:33. > :44:38.Abraxxas was a little far off that. He stood off a long way, but tried

:44:39. > :44:45.anyway, but didn't quite make it. He dropped his back legs. That can just

:44:45. > :44:51.knock the stuffing out of a horse. Butts Abraxxas starting to look a

:44:51. > :44:57.little bit tired. This horse doesn't, though. He is over the

:44:57. > :45:04.time. Going to be 20 seconds over. 58.5. The French don't have their

:45:04. > :45:11.strongest contingent here. But that is a good score for the Frenchman.

:45:11. > :45:17.We've got two Kiwis home inside the time. I think they are the

:45:17. > :45:22.exception. I don't think that will be the rule here at Burghley. Very

:45:22. > :45:27.difficult to get near that time. Avebury never looks in a hurry, but

:45:27. > :45:29.he just doesn't waste any time at the fences. Keeps such a brilliant

:45:29. > :45:47.rhythm. Making it look so easy, quite depressing for the others. FRH

:45:47. > :45:54.Butts Abraxxas at the Anniversary Splash, she is still behind the

:45:54. > :46:01.clock. Now the famous goose, it has caught one or two in the past but

:46:01. > :46:05.not Ingrid Klimke. 40 seconds to get home, that is not going to be

:46:05. > :46:09.enough. Need a bit more than a minute to get home from here. Quite

:46:09. > :46:16.a lot of galloping. Although this Lion Bridge is quite energy sapping

:46:16. > :46:17.and slows them down. It does and Butts Abraxxas is such a fast

:46:17. > :46:23.course, normally it is easy to get Butts Abraxxas is such a fast

:46:23. > :46:25.the time. The only two we have had inside the time have been

:46:25. > :46:33.thoroughbreds, they have come to the fore. Avebury now up this undulating

:46:33. > :46:39.terrain and that is what makes it so testing. Andrew Nicholson now, on

:46:39. > :46:45.his first horse, went a long way over the triple brushes. They are

:46:45. > :46:53.wider and less risk and he still got inside the time. He nips inside the

:46:53. > :46:55.tree, doesn't waste a centimetre. Here is Ingrid Klimke coming to the

:46:55. > :47:00.tree, doesn't waste a centimetre. last. She is already over, so she is

:47:00. > :47:06.going to add to her dressage score of 39. The most difficult phase for

:47:06. > :47:13.this horse that has let them both down over the air is has been the

:47:13. > :47:17.show-jumping. -- over the years. She is second at the moment but sadly

:47:17. > :47:25.for her, the worst phase still to come. I hope she is not listening to

:47:25. > :47:33.you. Here is one that is a brilliant horse, Redesigned, Pippa Funnell,

:47:33. > :47:37.they have gone so well in the past. The horse has been plagued with

:47:37. > :47:40.issues, hasn't had Berlin reparation for this event. -- hasn't had

:47:40. > :47:53.brilliant preparation. To ride it was even more impressive.

:47:53. > :47:58.The jumps are really high but it is a wonderful atmosphere. So many

:47:58. > :48:05.people are cheering, it is great ground, a real adventure. She won

:48:05. > :48:09.the individual silver and team gold in Malmo, we are going to see a lot

:48:09. > :48:13.more of Ingrid. Here is Andrew Nicholson, back at Capability's

:48:13. > :48:21.Cutting with a brick and he is making up the time -- with Avebury.

:48:21. > :48:26.He is on a good dressage score. One of the reasons this is such

:48:26. > :48:32.course is because of the natural undulations. They are used to good

:48:32. > :48:39.effect at the Leaf Pit. They launch and dropped 56 feet down. We are

:48:39. > :48:47.waiting for Pippa Funnell who won this title two years ago. See how

:48:47. > :48:58.easy they make it look. The Lion Bridge for Avebury.

:48:58. > :49:02.Interesting to see the time. We have only got one inside the time.

:49:02. > :49:07.Avebury never looks the fastest but covers the ground.

:49:07. > :49:13.Here is Pippa Funnell with Redesigned, coming back through the

:49:13. > :49:17.Discovery Valley now. She was worried about this fence. You feel

:49:17. > :49:22.the horse is lacking in match practice but she gives it able into

:49:23. > :49:27.ride and lots of encouragement afterwards. She will be happy it is

:49:27. > :49:33.out of the way. Andrew Nicholson, driving to the last. He is away

:49:33. > :49:41.inside the time. He has made all the time he was behind. Just as Captain

:49:41. > :49:49.Mark Phillips, the course designer, said might happen. 42.3 is his

:49:49. > :49:53.dressage score, he stays on that. New Zealand are now first and

:49:53. > :50:02.second. They are absolutely in magnificent form. Ingrid Klimke in

:50:02. > :50:12.third. Andrew again in fourth. Then Stanislas in fifth. Pippa Funnell

:50:12. > :50:19.has taken the sharper bit out of his mouth. She has to sit quietly at the

:50:19. > :50:24.combinations. Most horses are struggling to get there in three

:50:24. > :50:27.strides. As soon as the horses finish the

:50:27. > :50:32.cross-country course they are kept on the move. Avebury is washed

:50:32. > :50:36.down, scraped off and washed down again so his body temperature comes

:50:37. > :50:40.down. He has a thermometer just under his tail and that will be used

:50:40. > :50:44.by the vet to monitor the drop in his temperature and how quickly he

:50:44. > :50:48.is recovering. Already his heart rate has come down coming is not

:50:48. > :50:54.distressed, he is recovering really fast. He is 13 years old now, he is

:50:54. > :50:59.very fit, sort of at his peak for an event horse and he looks as if he is

:50:59. > :51:03.very happy with the job he has done. It is a privilege to ride him, he

:51:03. > :51:11.knows his job inside out and he made it feel like it was an open

:51:11. > :51:13.intermediate one-day event. In the first half it felt like he was

:51:14. > :51:23.spinning around the corners as happy as can be. Oliver Townend won it in

:51:23. > :51:31.2009. He is riding an ex-Nicholson horse, Armada. Fourth last year, he

:51:31. > :51:36.has been out of the big time in the last few seasons but this horse

:51:36. > :51:40.could get him back. Beautifully through the fifth fence, the

:51:40. > :51:46.Discovery Valley first combination. And Redesigned is flying down to the

:51:46. > :51:53.Rolex Combination. A little bit down on the clock. That horse, 27 seconds

:51:53. > :51:57.down in fact. He is a bit of a galloping machine but she has got to

:51:57. > :52:03.concentrate on this combination, quite a tight turn for a big

:52:03. > :52:15.striding horse. Has him anchored but makes it look easy.

:52:15. > :52:24.This combination looks so good when they represented Britain in Kentucky

:52:24. > :52:29.in the world Equestrian games. Finished fifth there and we hoped

:52:29. > :52:34.this would be a combination that could feature at the Olympic aims.

:52:34. > :52:42.Didn't work out, as she jumps through the triple brushes very

:52:43. > :52:48.well. It is a real combination to be reckoned with. Discovery Valley for

:52:49. > :52:55.Oliver. He has developed a great partnership with this horse. They

:52:55. > :53:04.get on so well. A big striding horse again. A strong horse.

:53:04. > :53:11.Back in the Anniversary Splash, not the stride she wanted. It was

:53:11. > :53:17.towards the end of the course they had their run out at Badminton which

:53:17. > :53:21.was their return to the big time. During the long route, probably a

:53:21. > :53:28.sensible move, it is quite a sharp turn to the goose. She won't have

:53:28. > :53:32.lost a lot of time, 35 seconds to get home, it is not enough. She is

:53:32. > :53:36.going to get time penalties. She was handily placed after dressage. Now

:53:36. > :53:48.at the Lion Bridge. This combination, back on form could

:53:48. > :53:56.be a huge asset to the British squad with the world championships next

:53:56. > :54:01.year in France. Jonelle Richards and The Deputy, coming to the arena.

:54:01. > :54:05.Finds those strides quite short there. Doesn't look in a hurry but

:54:05. > :54:18.could be deceptive. Jonelle Richards was the lead-off

:54:18. > :54:26.rider for the New Zealanders in the Olympics in London. This horse went

:54:26. > :54:35.to Kentucky this spring, finished 18th but certainly on the

:54:35. > :54:40.improvement. Just leaves a leg there. Not really attacking this

:54:40. > :54:48.course, could do with upping the gear. Pippa Funnell is already 20

:54:48. > :54:56.seconds over the optimum time. It is there a point for the penalty for

:54:56. > :55:01.every second. -- it is 0.4 of a penalty for every second. The

:55:01. > :55:03.combination could be back, which is very good news for Britain.

:55:03. > :55:14.Redesigned and Pippa Funnell, The Deputy has got the twisted turn

:55:14. > :55:22.bits at the beginning of the course out of the way. Now it is time to

:55:22. > :55:27.open up and go that bit faster. The injury he had two and a half years

:55:27. > :55:31.ago, he missed a lot. I take a big gamble in the management and getting

:55:31. > :55:36.him here and it is lovely how it paid off. I will move on and think

:55:36. > :55:40.how he can go faster because he felt full of running at the end. Around

:55:40. > :55:45.is the sort of course you are worried they will get tired. --

:55:45. > :55:52.is the sort of course you are around this sort of course. Armada

:55:52. > :55:58.is a Spanish bred horse, coming up to the Rolex Combination. 17 seconds

:55:58. > :56:02.behind the clock. He has always fashioned his style on Andrew

:56:02. > :56:07.Nicholson. The similar time to Andrew being behind a plot at this

:56:07. > :56:08.fence. Beautifully written. -- being behind the clock. Beautifully

:56:08. > :56:21.written. Only seven or eight marks behind the

:56:21. > :56:26.lead, it is not much. He is going the quick way. Jumping across the

:56:26. > :56:31.corner... Doesn't quite get there. Quite a surprise. He was trying to

:56:31. > :56:42.come across the corner of the second element. Now he has got to go the

:56:42. > :56:45.long route. That rules out Ollie Townend winning it again. Some

:56:45. > :56:57.others were not quite so lucky on the cross-country course. Astier

:56:57. > :57:04.Nicolas did not get his line at all. Pascal Leroy is at the Discovery

:57:04. > :57:11.Valley and he goes out. Lucy Jackson for New Zealand, Willy Do through

:57:11. > :57:18.the Trout Hatchery. Sadly gets an seated. Lucy Jackson goes out and it

:57:18. > :57:25.wasn't a lucky day for France because Benjamin Massie and Piano

:57:25. > :57:30.Star take a spectacular tumble coming out of the water. I'm lucky

:57:30. > :57:35.but probably was going too fast. And then Mark Davidson, the only

:57:35. > :57:43.American here. The only problem at the cottage all day.

:57:43. > :57:52.Now Ludwig Svennerstal, and here is a very exciting star for Sweden.

:57:52. > :57:57.Just 23, was in the Swedish silver medal team. He is at Discovery

:57:57. > :58:03.Valley with King Bob, his second horse. In Malmo he was on for an

:58:03. > :58:11.individual medal but then had two fences down. Jonelle Richards and

:58:11. > :58:16.The Deputy, coming up the hill. If that time is right, doesn't look as

:58:16. > :58:21.though she has been in a hurry at all.

:58:21. > :58:26.Certainly spending a lot of time setting up for the fences. Very neat

:58:26. > :58:47.through the Rolex Combination. Here again, she married her

:58:47. > :58:53.long-time boyfriend from New Zealand. Both Kiwis. Has been based

:58:53. > :58:57.here for the best part of ten years. Her promotion to the New Zealand

:58:57. > :59:02.team in London, winning that team bronze, has certainly set this lady

:59:02. > :59:07.on her way. It looks as though it is New Zealand practised ago the long

:59:07. > :59:13.route at the dairy market. They have decided it is not worth the risk,

:59:13. > :59:18.going the long route. Ludwig Svennerstal, King Bob, a horse that

:59:18. > :59:26.really got him on the international map. Now based over here. His sister

:59:26. > :59:30.goes to the young riders event in France next week. This man has got

:59:30. > :59:35.the future of Swedish sport very much on his mind. On the way home,

:59:35. > :59:47.Capability's Cutting. Another one to go to the upright on

:59:47. > :59:53.the left. Makes a good job of that. Might be deceptive, this horse.

:59:53. > :59:59.Another one down on time. Coming up to the Rolex Combination. This is

:59:59. > :00:03.the switchback part of the course, where riders have to use their

:00:03. > :00:11.skills to keep the horses balanced. This fence really is all about

:00:11. > :00:14.control and accuracy. Good preparation and very good

:00:14. > :00:28.performance through there for the young Swedish rider. The Anniversary

:00:28. > :00:35.Splash. I just wonder if perhaps this horse has gone faster than we

:00:35. > :00:40.imagine. It is a very big horse, with a long stride. A minute to get

:00:40. > :00:47.home. Could do it. Could. If the petrol is in the tank. Berry very

:00:47. > :00:51.deceptive, because I wouldn't have put him at that time at all. She has

:00:51. > :00:57.never looked as though she is in a hurry. That is a sign of a good

:00:57. > :01:07.horse, when it just looks effortless. Certainly looks to have

:01:07. > :01:12.enough left. Sam Griffiths for Australia. Represented Australia in

:01:12. > :01:22.the world question games. A man with a lot of ability. The dash the world

:01:23. > :01:29.Equestrian games. Happy Times looking good there. An experienced

:01:29. > :01:37.combination there. It is going to be nip and tuck here. A very good

:01:37. > :01:42.dressage score, as you see. 46.2. Don't think it is going to quite

:01:42. > :01:50.make it. Three inside the time. Three New Zealand rides, but not

:01:50. > :01:58.quite a fourth. The New Zealand domination continues. I didn't think

:01:58. > :02:00.that she would be anywhere near that time, but Sam Griffiths is certainly

:02:00. > :02:12.not hanging around. Sam always has a time, but Sam Griffiths is certainly

:02:12. > :02:17.sheepskin nose band on the horse. It can affect the horse's head position

:02:17. > :02:22.and how they look at jumps. Obviously experimented to work that

:02:22. > :02:28.out. That is a very difficult corner. The line to it on the

:02:28. > :02:32.approach is so acute. The horses just lock onto these flags. A lovely

:02:32. > :02:36.jump. CLARE BALDING: Is that as big a

:02:36. > :02:42.course as you have jumped in a few years? Yes. I don't think it is

:02:42. > :02:53.going to get much bigger. That's is as big as it gets. Suddenly, the

:02:53. > :03:00.horses come to the fore. The Anniversary Splash. So many of

:03:00. > :03:08.these international riders now based in Britain. This is a man who stands

:03:08. > :03:19.out, who we will see a lot more of. Went well in London, but not on this

:03:19. > :03:24.horse, Shamwari four. He is an incredibly talented young guy. Great

:03:24. > :03:31.to see that he got one horse at the Europeans and is here the next week.

:03:31. > :03:35.Look at how quickly he went through that gap. There's another one

:03:35. > :03:42.getting on with the job. Sam Griffiths, Happy Times. Was actually

:03:42. > :03:47.forth here at Badminton in 2009. They have been a very consistent

:03:47. > :03:53.combination, just not had the luck at championship level. Going through

:03:53. > :04:05.the Dairy Mount, and making the best of his way home. Now, Ludwig van

:04:05. > :04:13.style. Looking very concentrated. He comes to the very last fence. Nips

:04:13. > :04:24.over that. A very grown up around for the 23-year-old. Add six marks

:04:24. > :04:28.to his dressage score. There is the leaderboard, and look at the

:04:28. > :04:37.domination of New Zealand. Four in the top six. Still some big guns to

:04:38. > :04:46.come. Sam has had a great ride so far on Happy Times. I am surprised

:04:46. > :04:52.quite so many are taking the outside. It is probably a faster

:04:52. > :04:56.route. The horse was good. It was a little bit too keen in the beginning

:04:56. > :05:01.and we had some slightly awkward moments, but it was a fantastic

:05:01. > :05:09.course and he did two 's job, and I am happy. It was a decent track. I

:05:09. > :05:12.am very happy. There are precious few British names on that

:05:12. > :05:17.leaderboard. The one rider who could make an impact for great written is

:05:17. > :05:23.William Fox-Pitt. This is the horse who won the title here a few years

:05:23. > :05:30.ago, Parklane Hawk. Let's see how he fares.

:05:30. > :05:38.This course could suit this horse. He is an ex-New Zealand bred horse.

:05:38. > :05:47.He won an tacky. He stepped out on the course on a score of 41 point

:05:47. > :05:52.five. -- 41.5. William is a fantastic rider. His balance on

:05:52. > :05:58.cross country is unbelievable. He sits back and makes sure that the

:05:58. > :05:59.horses doing his job. The horse is really trusting. He makes the horse

:06:00. > :06:15.look easy. Class written all over it. Now, Sam

:06:15. > :06:20.Griffiths. Home is inside. Already 15 seconds over, and counting. Sam

:06:20. > :06:30.Griffiths, who had that dressage of 46.3.

:06:30. > :06:35.57.5. Australia get one in the top ten. Australia didn't have a great

:06:35. > :06:45.Olympics. Sam Griffiths safely home. ten. Australia didn't have a great

:06:45. > :06:50.Happy Times. Parklane Hawk already a winner here at Burghley. A very fast

:06:50. > :06:54.horse across the country. But William will need to get their

:06:54. > :06:59.inside the time if he is going to challenge for winning this

:06:59. > :07:09.competition. Very fast. Third here last year. In the top five at

:07:09. > :07:15.Badminton. Nikola Wilson, with the great Opposition Buzz. Good to see

:07:15. > :07:20.this combination back and jumping. Great dressage. They had one of

:07:20. > :07:36.their best dressage is ever, in the 40s. Trout Hatchery. This horse is a

:07:36. > :07:46.good gallop. Makes it look child's play. Here is Opposition Buzz. 43.3

:07:46. > :07:53.in the dressage. Not had a good year by their standards. Had a pretty

:07:53. > :07:59.dramatic fall earlier in the season, which meant Nikola was on the

:07:59. > :08:02.sidelines. This combination has done Britain proud in the Europeans.

:08:02. > :08:12.Helped to win the world team gold medal. Opposition Buzz and Nicola

:08:12. > :08:23.Wilson have made a tremendous contribution to British eventing.

:08:23. > :08:34.Probably in the best form ever. Really accelerating away. Now, he is

:08:34. > :08:41.the oldest rider here, but probably the most famous. Sir Mark Todd, on a

:08:41. > :08:49.new ride for him. 18th after dressage, 48.3. Ground to make up.

:08:49. > :08:54.Double Olympic gold medallist. Mark Todd is in a class of his own.

:08:55. > :08:59.Always has been, always will be. He makes it look so easy. So supple.

:08:59. > :09:05.The rhythm is always there. And the fact that he used still competing,

:09:05. > :09:14.and competing so well at this level, games huge admiration from

:09:14. > :09:21.other riders. Lord Burghley started this event off, and one Olympic gold

:09:21. > :09:27.in the hurdles, and then was the IOC chairman for the London Olympics in

:09:27. > :09:33.1948. Mark Todd away for the Lord Burghley Hurdles. It is a fairly new

:09:33. > :09:36.horse for him, but the way he came through that main arena, it was as

:09:36. > :09:44.though they've been together for years.

:09:44. > :09:59.Didn't get the highest there. As heard, this man held in such high

:09:59. > :10:08.esteem by his ears. William Fox-Pitt. Parklane Hawk. The horse

:10:08. > :10:40.that loves a galloping track. He is bred to stay.

:10:40. > :10:48.At the Discovery Valley. A big, striding

:10:48. > :10:57.experience coming to the fore big-time. Opposition Buzz 16 years

:10:58. > :11:05.old, but looking as good as ever. Such a popular combination. So good

:11:05. > :11:11.to see. A great hunting family in this lady. She really does show the

:11:11. > :11:18.rest of the field how to go cross country when they are in top form.

:11:18. > :11:24.Those flags break away these days. All part of the very big safety work

:11:24. > :11:28.now being done to make sure that horses and riders have the best

:11:28. > :11:35.chance possible in this risk sport. Here is William Fox-Pitt near the

:11:35. > :11:41.end with Parklane Hawk. He looks as if he has been flying. He is

:11:41. > :11:49.certainly trying to do this time. Just at times he has looked a

:11:49. > :11:52.fraction casual. It is a very fast horse, so maybe Willie thinks he's

:11:52. > :12:09.got it under control. He's going to be close. £60,000 to

:12:09. > :12:14.the winner. Over £40,000 to the second. He is currently lying handy.

:12:14. > :12:29.If he goes clear he could go into the top three.

:12:29. > :12:35.Oloa Trout Hatchery. Assessing the situation quickly, is forward.

:12:35. > :12:41.Now this is going to be nip and tuck. Takes a quick look at the

:12:41. > :12:47.clock. Crowds cheering him home here. The British support want one

:12:47. > :12:58.in to challenge the Kiwis. Every second was costly there. Two seconds

:12:59. > :13:06.over. 42.3. He goes behind Clifton Lush and stays just ahead of Andrew

:13:06. > :13:12.Nicholson. Nicola on Opposition Buzz did the test of their lives in the

:13:12. > :13:16.dressage. Usually quick across country. If she can finish on her

:13:16. > :13:21.dressage score, she will be right up there.

:13:21. > :13:25.CLARE BALDING: The frustrating thing is that two seconds go in the blink

:13:25. > :13:32.of an eye, and had you ever known it would make such difference? It's

:13:32. > :13:37.amazing. He gave me a superb ride. He was eating up that course and

:13:37. > :13:41.never gave me a second's worry. I thought I was quite comfortable. If

:13:41. > :13:47.only I had realised that I wasn't. I could easily have done it. Very,

:13:47. > :13:52.very annoying, but that is how it goes sometimes. I have been there

:13:52. > :13:59.before, but I hope it doesn't end up being very, very expensive. He is

:13:59. > :14:03.actually on the same score as Andrew Nicholson, but not as close to the

:14:03. > :14:11.optimum time as Andrew, so he does go behind Avebury. How good is it to

:14:11. > :14:15.have Mark Todd back in the sport? He retired in 2000 after the Sydney

:14:15. > :14:20.Olympics. Won the individual bronze there, and then came back for the

:14:20. > :14:29.2008 Olympics. He is back in a big way. The customary speed and

:14:29. > :14:32.accuracy of Opposition Buzz. They are flying around this course. It

:14:32. > :14:37.will be interesting to see what her time is like. It does highlight how

:14:38. > :14:42.will be interesting to see what her difficult this time is. When William

:14:42. > :14:50.gets two seconds over... This is another horse that would normally be

:14:50. > :15:00.inside, and he is over. That is penalties added. 19 seconds it is.

:15:00. > :15:03.50.9. If she could only have got through on her dressage school, she

:15:03. > :15:19.would have been right in there with show-jumping to come. Now we have

:15:19. > :15:22.Tina Cook and De Novo News. She was just lining up and angling the fence

:15:22. > :15:26.are little more than some of the other riders. Good dressage,

:15:26. > :15:33.probably the best test this course has ever done. It is a home bred

:15:33. > :15:35.horse, which is always a great thrill, to ride a horse you have

:15:35. > :15:56.bred. Safely on the way.

:15:56. > :16:02.You are still so full -- he is still so full of enthusiasm and energy?

:16:02. > :16:08.Yes, he just lives for the sport. It is a real treat for him to come here

:16:08. > :16:18.and see lots of crowds, a real joy for him and of course me.

:16:18. > :16:24.There is Mark Todd with Oloa, coming up to the Capability's Cutting.

:16:24. > :16:30.Another man... An anxious moment there. Pressing on, he is going to

:16:30. > :16:37.be pushed to make the time but what about this man? John Paget with his

:16:37. > :16:41.Badminton winner, Clifton Promise. He loves this horse and it has done

:16:41. > :16:49.absolutely nothing wrong since he first came on the New Zealand team.

:16:49. > :16:58.He just gets better and better. Keep it the great Michael Young at

:16:58. > :17:03.Badminton, can he win Burghley and Badminton back-to-back -- he picked

:17:03. > :17:12.the great Michael Young. The leader after dressage is out on course, the

:17:12. > :17:17.crowd will look forward to this. He looked quite casual at the start but

:17:17. > :17:18.this is a very fast horse. Jock certainly knows his way around this

:17:18. > :17:29.course. Very neat through the arena. certainly knows his way around this

:17:29. > :17:38.Quickly back in his rhythm. Kristina Cook, De Novo News, European

:17:38. > :17:48.champion. In 2009. An Olympic silver and bronze for the team and an

:17:48. > :17:53.individual bronze. She knows what it is all about, can she nursed this

:17:53. > :17:58.horse through? Mark Todd has given this horse a brilliant ride. I have

:17:58. > :18:02.to say the horse has answered all his questions. A bit frustrating

:18:02. > :18:04.that he has not quite made the time but he must be thrilled with this

:18:04. > :18:08.that he has not quite made the time new right. Very exciting prospect

:18:08. > :18:25.that -- thrilled with this new ride. What about this man? He is going to

:18:25. > :18:32.be such an exciting star for the sport in the future. Coming to the

:18:32. > :18:39.Leaf Pit now. Look at that, cantors right to the edge, wastes no time at

:18:40. > :18:45.all. Gets a lovely level stride out of the Leaf Pit. You could still be

:18:45. > :18:53.top ten and that would be an amazing thing. I would be chuffed to bits if

:18:53. > :18:58.he finishes in the top ten. It is looking a strong leader board.

:18:58. > :19:02.Andrew and Jock are on very good horses so I think they will be

:19:02. > :19:11.fighting it out tomorrow. William is there too, to add a bit of spice.

:19:11. > :19:16.Tina, coming to the Rolex Combination. We are going to check

:19:16. > :19:21.on her time soon. It is just a matter how much she is down. 31

:19:21. > :19:27.seconds, it is quite a lot to try to make up. It'll be interesting to see

:19:27. > :19:35.how this young horse copes. A little bit of an argument but pops through

:19:35. > :19:41.there. Just had a brilliant ride last week at the European

:19:41. > :19:49.Championships on Miners Frolic. Jock Padget's Clifton Promise. Down

:19:50. > :19:58.towards the big hedge. It is enormous but jumped it very easily.

:19:58. > :20:02.Clifton Promise, one of several horses from a tremendous owner who

:20:02. > :20:08.was based in New Zealand, now in France. They have Clifton Pinot in

:20:08. > :20:13.this competition, ridden by Kevin McNab, who started Jock Padget. He

:20:13. > :20:19.has not been in the sport that long but what a meteoric rise to the top.

:20:19. > :20:24.He rattles the house little bit but he is very quick coming out of the

:20:24. > :20:29.water. He is determined to get there. Really riding for his life.

:20:29. > :20:36.Clifton Promise, answering the questions. Andrew Nicholson, on what

:20:37. > :20:47.would be one of two of his best rides, no ray oh, -- Nereo. It is a

:20:47. > :20:56.real star and he is right in there after dressage, third on 41.3.

:20:56. > :21:02.Already with two in the top ten. The Maltings for Clifton Promise. This

:21:02. > :21:07.class horse. Jock Padget, a seriously class rider. With an

:21:07. > :21:20.incredible future ahead of him. Still a young rider. So much talent.

:21:20. > :21:28.Interestingly enough, this horse, like his last tours, has blood in

:21:28. > :21:35.its mouth. What a coincidence. Here comes Nereo, owned by a New Zealand

:21:35. > :21:40.lady who has lived in Great Britain for a number of years, a huge

:21:40. > :21:52.supporter of Andrew. Another of the Spanish bred horses, a real star. An

:21:52. > :22:01.uncharacteristic stop at the open but Andrew will be trying 100%.

:22:01. > :22:15.Heading for home, the Lion Bridge for Tina. How much petrol has he got

:22:15. > :22:21.left in the tank? Tina is kicking on. What is her time? Here is the

:22:21. > :22:29.time and it is just behind the clock again. It is a good ride. At

:22:29. > :22:34.Badminton they had an unlucky run out. Today it is clear all of the

:22:34. > :22:44.way, it is still getting better and can still go on improving. 38

:22:44. > :22:51.seconds, it is, over the time. Goes 12th on 58.4 with show-jumping still

:22:51. > :22:56.to come. Coming to the Cottesmore Leap for Jock Padget, how

:22:56. > :23:03.extraordinary is that. The judges trying to stop him. It is very easy

:23:03. > :23:05.to criticise, but Jock didn't get a very fair chance. The fence judge

:23:05. > :23:14.was not positive. Once more, it is very fair chance. The fence judge

:23:14. > :23:21.the blood, quite lucky for Jock to spot that. He is talking to the vets

:23:21. > :23:26.and it looks to me as if the vet is happy. This time it is out of the

:23:26. > :23:32.mouth so it could be biting the tongue, we will have to see. Two

:23:32. > :23:42.occasions, Jonathan Paget has been stopped. He makes is challenged to

:23:42. > :23:50.retain the Burghley title. Could he have three in the top ten -- he

:23:50. > :23:56.makes his challenge. The horse has obviously been checked, no problem.

:23:56. > :24:00.It is interesting, when you are held on the course, it is difficult to

:24:00. > :24:08.get back into the rhythm. Has his horse had a breather or does it

:24:08. > :24:12.distract the horse? To add to that, he stopped right at the top of the

:24:12. > :24:18.downhill run where he can make up some good time. It looks as if he is

:24:18. > :24:24.on target again and full of running, to go inside the time. Going to be

:24:24. > :24:35.close, 53 to get home. It could go against him.

:24:35. > :24:42.Jock is certainly trying to get there within the time, he is pushing

:24:42. > :24:50.for all he's worth. Andrew Nicholson and Nereo, this horse that is

:24:50. > :24:59.normally more than quick enough. 15 odd seconds behind the clock. This

:24:59. > :25:04.is a real class machine. A lot of thoroughbred in no Spanish

:25:04. > :25:09.bloodlines. -- those Spanish bloodlines. He gets quite wide there

:25:09. > :25:16.but still right on the line. I think he was only wide because he jumped

:25:16. > :25:29.so big over the rails. Climbing up to the dairy mound. The thing about

:25:29. > :25:34.Andrew Nicholson, you really don't see him change his pace, change his

:25:34. > :25:36.stride in preparation, he wastes nothing across the fences. He has

:25:36. > :25:43.stride in preparation, he wastes gone the long route again, as he did

:25:43. > :25:47.on his other two rides. Immediately increases the length of the stride

:25:47. > :25:52.to make up time. Here is another man increasing the pace. Jock Padget

:25:52. > :25:59.coming home, 11 seconds, is it enough? He has got a lead, he is

:25:59. > :26:10.going to maintain his dressage lead. One second over! 0.4. 37.1, he is

:26:10. > :26:19.going to be at least a fence ahead of anybody. Even what Andrew

:26:19. > :26:25.Nicholson will do. Show-jumping is tomorrow. What can this man do

:26:25. > :26:29.today? He has done absolutely nothing wrong so far. A little bit

:26:29. > :26:35.close to that rail. This is the third of three great rides that

:26:35. > :26:39.Andrew has had today. Well done, brilliant two rides. They

:26:39. > :26:46.were both exceptional, both very good horses. How extraordinary that

:26:46. > :26:51.you get stopped on both of them. People are going to start thinking I

:26:51. > :26:58.planned it. The first one bumped his nose at fence six. The second one

:26:59. > :27:04.bit his tongue, he flaps it around like a fool so he is going to bite

:27:04. > :27:09.it. Did you think, not again? As soon as the lady put the flag up,

:27:09. > :27:14.she put it up in front of Cottesmore Leap, I thought I would get that out

:27:14. > :27:21.of the way and then stop for the I saw blood on his lips and I thought,

:27:21. > :27:28.OK, that will be why. He is absolutely fine. Yes, he does bite

:27:28. > :27:32.his tongue. When you came to Burghley, did you think you could be

:27:32. > :27:38.first and second? No, I didn't think I was going to be. With these two

:27:38. > :27:43.horses, I know in the back of my mind it is very possible because

:27:43. > :27:46.they are both great horses. These competitions, against these sorts of

:27:46. > :27:51.riders, you never imagined you will be first and second at Burghley, it

:27:51. > :27:56.is amazing. What a cool cookie. Here is another, Andrew Nicholson. After

:27:56. > :28:04.dressage, 41.3. Can he stay on that? is another, Andrew Nicholson. After

:28:04. > :28:16.If he should be able to stay on that, it'll be New Zealand one, two,

:28:16. > :28:23.three and could even be four. Coming down to the Lion Bridge. The horse

:28:23. > :28:27.has not looked quite as much on song, looking a little weary but

:28:27. > :28:35.has not looked quite as much on still bonding to Andrew's efforts.

:28:35. > :28:41.-- still responding. Andrew has two inside the time, Jock has one, could

:28:41. > :28:46.Andrew make it three in a row? Is getting very close. He knows it.

:28:46. > :28:54.Yes, he does. I am not sure he is quite going to do it. So near, yet

:28:54. > :29:02.so far. He jumped the last. He has got three, four, five it is. 43 when

:29:02. > :29:09.three. He goes behind William Fox-Pitt into fifth. They will

:29:09. > :29:17.certainly be enjoying this in New Zealand, with seven in the top ten.

:29:17. > :29:22.What a performance. William Fox-Pitt, right in the mix. An

:29:22. > :29:29.exciting finish in prospect. On the second page, compensation for Great

:29:29. > :29:37.Britain with two good performances on Redesigned and De Novo News for

:29:37. > :29:41.Pippa Funnell and Kristina Cook. We are moments away now from the

:29:41. > :29:48.final show-jumping phase, to see who will be the winner of Burghley 2013.

:29:48. > :29:51.Jock Padget now only has one horse to ride, and that is because he

:29:51. > :29:58.withdrew Clifton Lush this morning before the vet's inspection. He

:29:58. > :30:03.picked up a really nasty bang at the Elephant Trap. They have scanned the

:30:03. > :30:07.knee. There is nothing broken, but there is some swelling. It isn't a

:30:07. > :30:13.long-term problem, but it has put him out of action for today's final

:30:13. > :30:19.phase. A three-day event have to stay fit and sound for all three

:30:19. > :30:24.days. He could become the first rider and horse combination since

:30:24. > :30:28.1989 to win both Badminton and Burghley in the same year. He will

:30:28. > :30:33.be last to go in the show-jumping phase. This morning, the crowd were

:30:33. > :30:41.entertained by various displays, including displays from two X

:30:41. > :30:52.champion horses. Including the Grand National winner two years ago. The

:30:52. > :30:59.connection between racing and eventing is very close. The

:30:59. > :31:05.show-jumping course today is proving very difficult. We have seen 11

:31:05. > :31:09.horses go, and no clear round so far. They included Andrew Nicholson,

:31:10. > :31:14.on the first of his three rides, Calico Joe. He absolutely

:31:14. > :31:20.the fourth fence. He recovered to get through the double clear, but

:31:20. > :31:25.had two more fences down, so 12 penalty points to add to his

:31:25. > :31:29.school. That will prove expensive. He has two more rides to come,

:31:29. > :31:31.including Avebury, who lives in second place. Andrew Nicholson,

:31:31. > :31:51.then, on Nereo. So, Andrew Nicholson with Nereo.

:31:51. > :32:00.Lying fourth overnight. Three horses in the top ten, so jumping out of

:32:00. > :32:10.order. 43.3 is his score. Nereo has been his star horse. Bronze

:32:10. > :32:13.medallist individually in the world in 2010 behind William Fox-Pitt.

:32:13. > :32:24.individually in London. Trying to win the Grand Slam at Badminton.

:32:24. > :32:26.They finish right in the money, in third place. Fourth at the moment.

:32:26. > :32:34.Very tight indeed. Nereo, as we saw yesterday on the

:32:34. > :32:50.cross country, keeping him connected and not

:32:50. > :32:55.gaining too much ground in the combination distances. That is

:32:55. > :33:05.typical of the sort of problem with a extra riding horse. Just

:33:05. > :33:15.lengthened a little bit. He will need to stay clear now. He is just

:33:15. > :33:29.0.1 of the mark... Jonelle Richards is in fourth place. 47.3. You can

:33:29. > :33:41.long in the frame there. Sadly, it flattened it last stride and clipped

:33:41. > :33:46.the bar. Pippa Funnell now. Tina Cook and Pippa Funnell the greatest

:33:46. > :33:51.of mates. Those two together, with William Fox-Pitt, have been part of

:33:51. > :34:02.the British dynasty ever since they have been in juniors together.

:34:02. > :34:19.problems. Currently lying 12th. That is just under three points ahead of

:34:19. > :34:35.Andrew Nicholson. Paper is a real perfectionist in all

:34:36. > :34:40.the disciplines, and she was apologising to her owners and her

:34:40. > :34:45.long-term trainer for not doing a good enough job in the dressage.

:34:45. > :34:50.Then she was kicking herself for not going fast enough cross-country. As

:34:50. > :34:54.you say, this horse has had its problems staying sound and staying

:34:54. > :35:01.on the road. But she was thrilled with him yesterday. We already know

:35:01. > :35:03.he's a superstar. She just needs to be able to put the training and the

:35:03. > :35:09.work into him. He's certainly got be able to put the training and the

:35:09. > :35:17.all the ability in the world. A little bit keen for some of these

:35:17. > :35:23.show jumps. But he has had very, very few runs in the last year or

:35:23. > :35:29.so. To get him to compete at this level, I should think, has been

:35:29. > :35:42.quite a hard job for paper. But no one more up for the task. And the

:35:42. > :35:50.last goes. That's expensive. 73.9. That will drop her right down the

:35:50. > :35:57.leaderboard. Tina Cook comes up one. Andrew Nicholson also picks up a

:35:57. > :36:01.place, despite his three down. Disappointing for paper there. I am

:36:01. > :36:08.pretty sure that this horse will be Disappointing for paper there. I am

:36:08. > :36:14.right up there. Tina Cook is with me now. Just one fence down on De Novo

:36:14. > :36:21.News. You are going to be top ten. Well done. I am really pleased, but

:36:21. > :36:28.he is a fabulous jumper. He is a classy horse. Singing you, Pippa

:36:28. > :36:34.Funnell, and William Fox-Pitt really up there. Where do you think British

:36:34. > :36:37.eventing is there right now? In a bit of a lull. In the Europeans, the

:36:37. > :36:41.Germans really thrashed us. But we bit of a lull. In the Europeans, the

:36:41. > :36:46.saved our young horses. We have got some young riders coming through. It

:36:46. > :36:51.is a quiet year, but we are building up to Rio. Rio is our main

:36:51. > :36:57.objective. Don't wipe us out completely. So you would say, don't

:36:57. > :37:02.panic. Yes, there is a good system in place, thanks to lottery funding.

:37:02. > :37:07.There is a great team around us. It takes a while to build people up. It

:37:07. > :37:18.takes six seven years to build them to this level. Thank you.

:37:18. > :37:24.Mark Todd, five times winner of this Burghley title. One of the true

:37:24. > :37:32.greats of all time. Oloa new rider to him. Currently on 55.5. He has

:37:32. > :37:37.got a fence in hand on Andrew Nicholson, just behind him at the

:37:38. > :37:47.moment on Calico Joe. This man has not only one double gold medals, but

:37:47. > :37:53.he has also ridden in the Olympic show-jumping in Seoul in 1998, and

:37:53. > :37:59.again in 1992. This man is multitalented. He showed some of

:37:59. > :38:08.that talent there. He dropped his reins at the boxer. The rhythm and

:38:08. > :38:14.the balance never changes. This horse looked a little green at times

:38:14. > :38:17.yesterday. Certainly impressive. There's another one just to have a

:38:17. > :38:23.little look at that water tray. There is a water tray under that

:38:23. > :38:30.boxer, and you could see Mark working quite hard. Another fence

:38:30. > :38:53.down will drop him three places. Living dangerously! And he jumps the

:38:53. > :39:00.last. Nicely judged. So he goes on to 59.5. He stays on his ninth

:39:01. > :39:19.place. Now, Nicola Wilson with Opposition

:39:19. > :39:29.Buzz. Currently lying in sixth position on a score of 50.9. Well,

:39:29. > :39:32.Nicola Wilson now, from up in Yorkshire on this lovely horse,

:39:32. > :39:37.Opposition Buzz. What a combination they've been. They did their best

:39:37. > :39:51.ever dressage here earlier in the week. They really did do a wonderful

:39:51. > :39:56.dressage. They helped Britain to a number of championship medals when

:39:56. > :40:04.they joined the team in 2009. A great partnership. Those three bar

:40:04. > :40:14.senses, in show-jumping terms, looks a bit of a freebie. But didn't quite

:40:14. > :40:21.make the spread. It was great to see him yesterday in such cracking

:40:22. > :40:28.form. Sadly, he went out to Germany in June and had a bit of a tumble in

:40:28. > :40:32.the water, which was probably the only real mistake in his

:40:32. > :40:36.cross-country career. But he was certainly back on form yesterday. 16

:40:36. > :40:46.years old. Nicola isn't doing very certainly back on form yesterday. 16

:40:46. > :41:04.well of late, but he really has been a star again, as has the jockey.

:41:04. > :41:18.Down it goes as well. All right for time. So 62.9, and she drops behind

:41:18. > :41:32.Calico Joe, Andrew Nicholson's first horse.

:41:32. > :41:36.Nicola Hall will be director of the European Championships in Blair

:41:36. > :41:56.Nicola Hall will be director of the Castle in 2015.

:41:56. > :42:04.It is now the turn of one of the German stars who has been so much

:42:04. > :42:11.part of the German climb right to the top of the world. They of course

:42:11. > :42:17.were world champions in 2006, Olympic champions in 2008, and again

:42:17. > :42:25.in London last year. Ingrid was on this very horse then. Been an apt

:42:25. > :42:31.salutes staff. Not always easy in this phase. He is a thoroughbred.

:42:31. > :42:34.That is what the Germans are so successful in doing, putting

:42:34. > :42:40.thoroughbred bloodlines on their horses. She didn't jump in the

:42:40. > :42:46.individual final round because she knocked several down in the first of

:42:46. > :42:51.the last two show-jumping rounds. It happened in being to be jewel in

:42:51. > :43:02.2011 as well. Just one at the moment. He can be a little bit

:43:02. > :43:09.casual in this phase. He had a couple of hairy moments in the cross

:43:09. > :43:17.country yesterday. But his short little is guide flying round the

:43:17. > :43:24.course in great form. This new young mayor, a nine-year-old in Malmo, won

:43:24. > :43:26.the individual silver medal. She would love to finish right up there

:43:26. > :43:36.on Burghley on this horse. Every would love to finish right up there

:43:36. > :43:45.element of that line walloped and kicked, but they stayed up. Lucky,

:43:45. > :43:54.lucky. She jumps the last. That's a good round. 52.2. They will

:43:54. > :44:06.certainly retain their overnight place.

:44:06. > :44:13.There's Chris Bartle, the team manager. He has been so important

:44:13. > :44:18.with the tremendous rise of Germany. manager. He has been so important

:44:18. > :44:20.My word, they were impressive in Malmo when they won that world title

:44:20. > :44:34.a week ago. Now, Jonelle Richards. And how this

:44:34. > :44:38.lady has developed since she was in this New Zealand team who won the

:44:38. > :44:45.team bronze in London! She was the lead-off rider. Jonelle Richards,

:44:45. > :44:50.married last December to Tim Price. Riding The Deputy. Finished on 47.4.

:44:50. > :45:15.Already up to 51.4. So very tight around here these

:45:15. > :45:20.scores. One early fence down. We saw her -- how big striding this horse

:45:20. > :45:23.was on the cross country. We thought he was nowhere near the time, but

:45:23. > :45:33.his monstrous stride covered the ground.

:45:33. > :45:46.Incan Tuckey he looks impressive in cross country -- in Kentucky. Then

:45:46. > :45:48.he didn't jump so well and move down the leaderboard. That was on an

:45:48. > :45:52.all-weather surface, this is on grass. Sometimes the horses in Great

:45:52. > :46:02.Britain like the grass but not this one. Yes, another two away. He is a

:46:02. > :46:09.big, rangy horse. He is doing a good job. The twists and turns would help

:46:09. > :46:17.a horse like this, to keep it together. She certainly drops below

:46:17. > :46:27.Ingrid Klimke. Just ahead of Mark Todd. 59.45 Jonelle Richards, it was

:46:27. > :46:35.to be one of her best 4-star finishes. All these fences coming

:46:35. > :46:42.down, hits them behind, leaves his back legs behind. Let's get a

:46:42. > :46:48.reaction from Ingrid Klimke. He rattled everything but only one

:46:48. > :46:52.fell. He is so clever. He knows that he can easily touch these rails but

:46:52. > :46:55.luckily they all stayed on. I thought he was really trying,

:46:55. > :47:00.especially after yesterday, it was our first time here. Yesterday he

:47:00. > :47:06.gave me such a lovely round that I am very happy with him. Will you

:47:06. > :47:11.come back to Burghley? Fisher. If you do it once, you want to do it

:47:11. > :47:17.every year -- for sure. Remember, three to go. Already in

:47:17. > :47:27.fourth place before we started was Andrew Nicholson. He jumped out of

:47:27. > :47:33.order with Nereo. He is on 47.3. He is the one behind this man, they are

:47:33. > :47:40.great rivals. William Fox-Pitt, winner here two years ago. He was

:47:40. > :47:50.third on this very horse last year. Parklane Hawk. 42.3. He has won this

:47:50. > :47:52.4-star, he has also won Kentucky and he has won this title in all six

:47:52. > :48:03.times. We know he is capable of clear

:48:03. > :48:10.rounds, we know he is capable of winning this level. But every day is

:48:10. > :48:18.different. He can afford one down and still stay third, but no more.

:48:18. > :48:24.He jumped brilliantly around here two years ago. To win this event. It

:48:24. > :48:32.was quite different conditions, a lot of rain on the ground -- and the

:48:32. > :48:39.ground was sodden and the going was heavy. I don't I have ever seen

:48:39. > :48:45.William hold the front end up quite as much as he is doing here,

:48:45. > :48:48.protecting the front end of the horse. He obviously trusts him

:48:48. > :48:55.behind and is trying to keep him off the fence. The only rigid medallist

:48:55. > :49:01.in the Europeans last week. Oh... The second one is going to be

:49:01. > :49:10.costly. He has dropped below Nereo and Andrew Nicholson. 50.3. That was

:49:10. > :49:14.the issue, the course has been good behind throughout the competition

:49:14. > :49:18.but he gets a little low in front over the show jumps. Clear rounds

:49:18. > :49:31.have sometimes been hard to come by for William and Parklane Hawk. They

:49:31. > :49:35.are going to finish on 50.3. He goes below Andrew Nicholson. They were

:49:35. > :49:41.both on the same score before this, Andrew had one down, William had

:49:41. > :49:45.two. Here we go, just two riders to go

:49:45. > :49:48.and both of them from New Zealand. Andrew Nicholson on last year's

:49:48. > :49:54.winner Avebury, they would be the first ever to win back-to-back

:49:54. > :49:58.Burghleys on the same horse. Jock Paget had not jumped a fence until

:49:58. > :50:02.he was 18 years old. He trained as a bricklayer. He is now the up and

:50:02. > :50:08.coming star of eventing around the world, not just in this country and

:50:08. > :50:14.he stands on the threshold of completing a badminton Burghley

:50:14. > :50:18.double and putting himself in line for the grand slam. It is that man

:50:18. > :50:30.again, three potentially in the top ten.

:50:30. > :50:38.He had a brilliant win here last year, the start of an amazing purple

:50:38. > :50:42.patch. He won in Kentucky, it brought him to the grand slam

:50:42. > :50:49.possibilities at Badminton. One of the best in the world, currently

:50:49. > :50:54.lying second on 42.3. He is one fence behind the current leader,

:50:54. > :51:03.Jock Paget. And of course, at the moment, the best score behind him is

:51:03. > :51:10.his and self -- is himself so he could finish second and third, or

:51:10. > :51:16.could it be even higher? He has been a little toe tapping up the rights.

:51:16. > :51:18.He is jumping the oxers well. Another horse who we know is

:51:18. > :51:35.capable. That was a good rub to get away

:51:35. > :51:38.with, the gate has gone sadly. Richard Jeffers has built this

:51:38. > :51:43.course, a man who comes from Cornwall, has a lot of his designing

:51:43. > :51:53.in America, always designed to show-jumping at Kentucky. He is

:51:53. > :51:59.certainly making it exciting. Always difficult when you have one down

:51:59. > :52:04.under pressure. Do you get defensive and start thinking back, do you keep

:52:04. > :52:11.the rhythm? Andrew is riding well off that turn, he trusts himself,

:52:11. > :52:23.they know each other so well. Coming to the last and he is clear, inside

:52:23. > :52:28.the time. 46 -- 46.3, it was the one fence down at the gate. It is still

:52:28. > :52:33.good enough to stay ahead of his other horse, Nereo. He is guaranteed

:52:33. > :52:42.second and third. There is his partner. It is nail-biting stuff, my

:52:42. > :52:51.word. One left, and it is yet another Kiwi. Here he is, 29 years

:52:51. > :52:59.old, Jock Paget. He really has risen to the top of the world. Just remind

:52:59. > :53:02.you, he had to withdraw Clifton Lush this morning, he wasn't produced for

:53:02. > :53:08.the inspection. He was first and second overnight but looking for the

:53:08. > :53:14.double of a Badminton and Burghley in the same year. Dramatic finish

:53:14. > :53:23.saw him the winner of the Badminton title, now with this lovely horse.

:53:23. > :53:33.Now looking for another 4-star win. 37.1, he has got two fences in hand.

:53:33. > :53:38.He has had a couple of good rub is in front already. He has only jumped

:53:38. > :53:42.three fences. He jumped a brilliant clear round at Badminton to put the

:53:42. > :53:53.pressure on Michael Young in April. May, in fact. We know he is capable.

:53:53. > :54:01.Such an exciting young man to watch in all three disciplines. Fantastic

:54:01. > :54:09.dress large, amazing cross-country -- fantastic dressage.

:54:09. > :54:19.There is no doubt the New Zealand show-jumping coach has done a great

:54:19. > :54:35.job, particularly with this man. He is looking good. Barring a

:54:35. > :54:41.disaster, I think he is a double winner. Even if he has this fence

:54:41. > :54:45.down he still has this early title! He does but he is still the Burghley

:54:45. > :55:11.champion. 41.1. -- this early title. This man has helped put it there.

:55:11. > :55:15.The Kiwis are there and they can celebrate because it has been a

:55:15. > :55:26.fantastic event for them. One two, three for New Zealand. Here is Jock

:55:26. > :55:33.Paget winning in style. A commentator's curse at the last

:55:33. > :55:37.fence but it was unimportant. Look at the face, incredible, absolutely

:55:37. > :55:42.thrilled, relieved but throw. Supporters are hugging each other.

:55:42. > :55:48.Great celebrations, fantastic win for Jock.

:55:48. > :55:54.Here is confirmation of what has been a dramatic Land Rover Burghley

:55:54. > :56:22.2013. Jock Paget, wearing the winners sash

:56:22. > :56:28.for the second time it a major three-day event in red Britain. How

:56:28. > :56:33.on earth -- in Great Britain. How do you reflect on what you have done? I

:56:33. > :56:38.don't know. That was a lot of fun. It is going to take a while to sink

:56:38. > :56:42.in. It has been a good day. It has been a very good year and the lovely

:56:42. > :56:47.thing, we had no clear rounds this afternoon but you were so clean

:56:47. > :56:52.until the last fence. It is a shame, I love to jump clear but a win is a

:56:52. > :56:55.win and I will take it. William Fox-Pitt is the highest placed

:56:55. > :57:00.British rider in fourth place. I guess a frustrating few days for

:57:00. > :57:03.you. A little bit frustrating but I am delighted with him. This summer

:57:03. > :57:08.has been tricky for him with the firm ground. He has come here with

:57:08. > :57:12.minimum preparation and he has gone brilliantly. Bits and bobs that

:57:12. > :57:17.could have tweaked the result but to finish fourth, I am very proud and

:57:17. > :57:25.he has been first, third and fourth here. How do you reflect on 2013?I

:57:25. > :57:30.think it has been an interesting year, certainly for Team GB. There

:57:30. > :57:33.is a lot we can think about but we have got to focus on the strong

:57:33. > :57:39.riders that we do have and the amazing horses. And things will come

:57:39. > :57:43.together. No one is at the top for ever. We have some fantastic,

:57:43. > :57:49.Nations and I am looking forward to getting going. I have some wonderful

:57:49. > :57:57.horses -- we have some fantastic on donations.

:57:57. > :58:03.-- fantastic combinations. Jock Paget lifts the trophy. The

:58:03. > :58:08.presentation made by the MD of Land Rover Jaguar and the president of

:58:08. > :58:12.the Burghley Horse Trials. The points of Jock Paget means he has

:58:12. > :58:16.moved into third place in the FDI classics. Andrew Nicholson is the

:58:17. > :58:34.winner of that award. There is no doubt of who is the

:58:34. > :58:38.story of this season in the UK. Jock Paget has risen seemingly from

:58:38. > :58:43.nowhere, having trained as a bricklayer and done a bit of radio

:58:43. > :58:47.riding, he is now on top of the world in eventing. -- rodeo riding.
