:00:25. > :00:29.The event horse has to be the complete equine athlete. There are
:00:30. > :00:34.three different disciplines that test its physique and temperament to
:00:35. > :00:39.the max and Avebury is one of the best in the world. This striking
:00:40. > :00:41.grey as victory in its sights because he and Andrew Nicholson
:00:42. > :00:46.could be the first partnership to win here three years in a row. You
:00:47. > :00:50.will find out over the next few hours if they can do it or not.
:00:51. > :01:09.Welcome to the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.
:01:10. > :01:15.The eventing circus is always on the move and those riders that were
:01:16. > :01:18.representing their country at the World Equestrian Games in France
:01:19. > :01:21.have packed up their horse boxes and headed across the channel to
:01:22. > :01:25.Lincolnshire. We will take you to Normandy at the end of the programme
:01:26. > :01:30.to show you the very last event and the medals being decided in the
:01:31. > :01:33.individual show-jumping. For now we will concentrate on the Burghley
:01:34. > :01:35.Horse Trials because this is one of the toughest cross-country courses
:01:36. > :01:39.in the world and the toughest cross-country courses
:01:40. > :01:42.prestigious titles. Let's look at the key contenders. Top
:01:43. > :01:46.prestigious titles. Let's look at always have to be this man, William
:01:47. > :01:50.Fox-Pitt, the world number one, six time champion and recent individual
:01:51. > :01:55.bronze medallist at the World Equestrian Games. The key French has
:01:56. > :02:01.Jakata, back from a break, and Westwood Marina. -- Piggy French.
:02:02. > :02:06.Aiming for his place in history books, Andrew Nicholson brings back
:02:07. > :02:13.burly winner Avebury looking for the hat-trick. Fellow New Zealander and
:02:14. > :02:21.fourth placed in France last week, Jonelle Price is not afraid to put
:02:22. > :02:26.her foot down. Sam Griffiths took the title at Badminton. A win here
:02:27. > :02:30.would put him on track for the rare Rolex treble. And Izzy Taylor was
:02:31. > :02:33.named in the Great Britain team for the World Equestrian Games but had
:02:34. > :02:40.to pull out. She is some cross-country rider. The riders are
:02:41. > :02:43.only half of the team because the horses oche. They have to be the
:02:44. > :02:49.best athletes because as well as swimming, cycling and running they
:02:50. > :02:52.have to excel at show-jumping, cross-country and dressage. We
:02:53. > :03:13.turned to Andrew Nicholson to explain what is required.
:03:14. > :03:21.What a horse does need to be competitive at Burleigh is a very
:03:22. > :03:25.good engine in it. When I say engine, I mean they don't have to be
:03:26. > :03:30.a furore in terms of speed, they just have to be able to keep going
:03:31. > :03:34.along at that consistent speed, up and down the undulations without
:03:35. > :03:40.getting tired for 11 and a half minutes. You know pretty much when
:03:41. > :03:44.you do your first couple of novice events which ones can do that and
:03:45. > :03:48.which cannot. Pretty much all the top events, we go there knowing that
:03:49. > :03:52.we have to be very good at the dressage, very good at the
:03:53. > :03:55.cross-country and very good at the show-jumping. This sport has got to
:03:56. > :04:02.such a level now that you cannot afford to have a weak link. And when
:04:03. > :04:06.I plan which horses I will take to Burleigh purely because they can
:04:07. > :04:11.cope with the cross-country to rain, they all can do the jobs but they
:04:12. > :04:19.can't all be competitive at the right speed and to rain. -- ter
:04:20. > :04:28.rain. Temperament is a big part of a competition horse. You want one to
:04:29. > :04:35.go into the dressage and be very calm but alert. You need ones that
:04:36. > :04:38.can go in and raise their whole game for the crowd. You want them to be
:04:39. > :04:44.able to walk from the start box at the cross-country, alert, sharp but
:04:45. > :04:48.listening to you. You have walked the course and you know the heavy
:04:49. > :04:53.bits, the rough ground, the ups and downs, the difficult jumps. If they
:04:54. > :04:57.are listening to you, you can help them a lot. And then with
:04:58. > :05:03.show-jumping, you want them to go in, respect offences, realise they
:05:04. > :05:09.don't have to jump over the top bit, they just have to leave the
:05:10. > :05:13.coloured poles up. As with other equestrian disciplines, breeding
:05:14. > :05:16.must play its part and Jumbo has sired four winners at Burleigh and
:05:17. > :05:27.Avebury is the most successful of them. If you can have a full
:05:28. > :05:31.thoroughbred, they are hard to find. I have a good supply of young horses
:05:32. > :05:34.but they are not thoroughbreds. At least they have a lot of
:05:35. > :05:38.thoroughbred in their breeding but they have some warm blood as well,
:05:39. > :05:47.and that gives them more movement on the flat. They jump nicely. They are
:05:48. > :05:51.not as fast as thoroughbreds, but if I buy them young, I feel I can train
:05:52. > :05:55.them and they start galloping when they are four years old. It is part
:05:56. > :06:06.of their routine when they get older. I think that is why the likes
:06:07. > :06:13.of Avebury and Cruise Control have managed to win at the top level. It
:06:14. > :06:24.is the work they have done as youngsters. Avebury has won Burleigh
:06:25. > :06:28.twice and this horse has won twice. They are different in their types
:06:29. > :06:34.and both very athletic horses. Avebury, as you can see, is not so
:06:35. > :06:42.big. The other is a very big, rangy horse and has got to keep his stride
:06:43. > :06:46.pattern within the little rode crossings and simple pants down
:06:47. > :07:00.bits. He's quite happy up and down hills, it galloping, but Avebury is
:07:01. > :07:05.more suited to Burleigh. They both jump the jumps the same but when I
:07:06. > :07:10.get to the finish with the other, I feel like I have given him a major
:07:11. > :07:19.work-out worries Avebury could have chugged along for another few
:07:20. > :07:21.minutes. -- whereas Avebury. They will need a really good dressage
:07:22. > :07:35.score so let's see how they get on. The steely look of concentration on
:07:36. > :07:37.Andrew Nicholson's face as he gets Avebury's campaign under way.
:07:38. > :07:42.Excellent dressage last year of course. But he will be satisfied
:07:43. > :07:46.with this. Avebury is pretty reliable in the dressage. The hind
:07:47. > :07:55.leg should be on the centre line and then move off into the half pass. It
:07:56. > :08:01.does not alter the angle and rhythm. Andrew getting every ounce out of
:08:02. > :08:04.Avebury. If you want to see a good-looking horse, Happy Times
:08:05. > :08:10.arrives at the party with Sam Griffiths. Gorgeous to look at. Very
:08:11. > :08:14.elegant horse and that works in your favour big time in the dressage. As
:08:15. > :08:22.you come down the centre line, you want this good luck and it catches
:08:23. > :08:24.the eyes of the judges. If there was any doubt, they tend to go that bit
:08:25. > :08:33.higher, good-looking horses. any doubt, they tend to go that bit
:08:34. > :08:35.Good-looking riders helps sometimes. William Fox-Pitt, the unmistakable
:08:36. > :08:42.figure of William, the six time winner here. On his horse, and
:08:43. > :08:49.second placing after this performance that scored 39.5. An
:08:50. > :08:54.excellent start. Yes, brilliant for William. Bay My Hero, a short career
:08:55. > :08:57.so far, but an out and out winner. You can see that in the dressage.
:08:58. > :09:07.APPLAUSE You can see how popular William is
:09:08. > :09:15.with a really good start to his Burleigh.
:09:16. > :09:19.And of course Jonathan Paget. 38.8 on Clifton Promise. Of course last
:09:20. > :09:27.year, allowing for what happened in the aftermath, a great dressage and
:09:28. > :09:32.did not really look back. He has a lot to put to the back of his mind
:09:33. > :09:36.and concentrate on here. He is usually reliable in the dressage. He
:09:37. > :09:42.has a headshaking attitude and every now and again his nose twitches. It
:09:43. > :09:47.is something that they react to in the atmosphere. He does all his
:09:48. > :09:51.warming up with nets over the horse's eyes and nose. But they have
:09:52. > :09:56.to take them off in the arena. They can keep the earmuffs on. It is
:09:57. > :10:01.supposed to be for the flies but it does help the noise and tension of
:10:02. > :10:10.the atmosphere. You can see that twitching of his nose. Lovely
:10:11. > :10:15.picture, lovely outline. Jock is very confident and relaxed in this
:10:16. > :10:16.phase. Beautiful changes. Absolutely crossing the centre line, so
:10:17. > :10:27.accuracy is all-important. You can see how straight the horse
:10:28. > :10:39.is in the centre line. Brilliant halt. Lovely, lovely. Jonathan Paget
:10:40. > :10:47.off and running. The judges liked Clifton Promise as
:10:48. > :10:52.well, and he leads the way. Andrew Hoy is also back in the big-time and
:10:53. > :11:01.Springer from the USA. Let's get the reaction of Andrew Nicholson. Yes,
:11:02. > :11:04.very happy. I rode him a bit too small but if you want a big mark you
:11:05. > :11:13.have to make them small but not that small. And the change, I was too far
:11:14. > :11:19.past the centre line. Costly mistakes that this sort of level. He
:11:20. > :11:23.is 14, which is younger than some of them. Some of them are 17 in the top
:11:24. > :11:27.level but he has been in the job since he was six, and he has been
:11:28. > :11:42.used to the maximum, shall we say, in a nice way. He has always been
:11:43. > :11:48.reading competitively. -- ridden competitively. Whatever he does now
:11:49. > :11:54.is a bonus. Burleigh is one of six events around the world known as the
:11:55. > :11:58.Classics. William Fox-Pitt, if he is top here, could win the overall
:11:59. > :12:03.title and Oliver Townend is not far behind. The cross-country day is
:12:04. > :12:07.always misty and murky but that has not stopped the crowds. Hundreds of
:12:08. > :12:11.thousands of people here to watch the action unfold. This is the first
:12:12. > :12:18.of 32 fences, the upturned horseshoe to wish them good luck. 11 minutes
:12:19. > :12:22.19 is the optimum time. The course starts and finishes in front of the
:12:23. > :12:27.house and it is an anti clockwise loop. The first couple of fences are
:12:28. > :12:30.big but essentially friendly. They go into the arena with a test of
:12:31. > :12:35.accuracy with some hurdles with water plates beneath them. Then
:12:36. > :12:44.discovery Valley. Sam Griffiths explains. This is fence five,
:12:45. > :12:49.Discovery Valley, an iconic fence at Burleigh. The difficulty the riders
:12:50. > :12:53.face here is that they have to come down quite a steep slope that can
:12:54. > :12:59.unbalance the horses and then run up a steep slope to quite a narrow
:13:00. > :13:03.fence. You then have a curving side to a skinny fence. I don't see this
:13:04. > :13:11.causing a huge amount of trouble but it will catch out the odd rider.
:13:12. > :13:15.After that they jumped a big spread at the elephant trap. The classic
:13:16. > :13:20.leaf that has an astrological theme to it this year. Compared to last it
:13:21. > :13:31.should not be as difficult as it looks. Here we are at fence nine,
:13:32. > :13:36.back at Discovery Valley. This is the first really tough test that
:13:37. > :13:40.gets the riders scratching their heads. We have to come over quite a
:13:41. > :13:45.narrow fence, similar to what we have already done. Down a steep
:13:46. > :13:51.slope. Probably in three strides over a ditch, then sharp right-hand
:13:52. > :13:56.turn to a corner. The difficulty the riders face here is judging how the
:13:57. > :13:59.horses will jump the ditch. If your horse jumps the ditch and large, you
:14:00. > :14:04.could well do three strides to the corner and if they just pop over,
:14:05. > :14:10.you could be looking at four and even five strides. There is a lovely
:14:11. > :14:20.natural look to the hollow and at 12, and then onto the iconic complex
:14:21. > :14:27.where William Fox-Pitt awaits. The trout hatch at 13 and 14 has a new
:14:28. > :14:38.look. The first element comes down a very steep hill with brush. Then you
:14:39. > :14:45.have got the sharp turn right to the step. This can ride on any stride.
:14:46. > :14:49.Two, three, four and any step out of the water can be tricky so you will
:14:50. > :14:54.be hoping to get a good clean jump up that step and then up to the
:14:55. > :14:57.brush next to me here. Then you have a possibility of three or four
:14:58. > :15:02.strides and even more if you need it. It is a question of feeling how
:15:03. > :15:10.your horse is, hoping he locks on and staying on that line. After the
:15:11. > :15:15.trout, they get to the captain's Log, named after the course designer
:15:16. > :15:25.Captain Mark Phillips, who has set another test where we join Jonelle
:15:26. > :15:30.Price. This is fences 16, 17 and 18. Five and a half minutes, so nearly
:15:31. > :15:39.halfway. The horses will be feeling some fatigue as they go up the hill
:15:40. > :15:43.and into the complex here. We have a good set of white rails, pretty
:15:44. > :15:46.imposing looking and intimidating when walking up to it but the horses
:15:47. > :15:56.will make fairly light work of it. Then we come round to 17 and 18.
:15:57. > :16:01.Captain Mark Phillips has been created here. The uphill bounce is
:16:02. > :16:06.not something we are overly used to or have seen too many times before
:16:07. > :16:10.but once they land it should be a fairly direct four stride line to
:16:11. > :16:18.this fairly acute looking corner. I think the layer of the land helps
:16:19. > :16:24.take the horses to the right line. The horses walk three or four times
:16:25. > :16:30.so they can pace out, see how many strides it will take. As they face
:16:31. > :16:34.the Rolex Combination, they will be checking their watches and keeping
:16:35. > :16:39.up the pace and accuracy. The dairy farm is a good example of the humps
:16:40. > :16:43.and hollows that are part of the challenge of Burleigh. Two brushes
:16:44. > :16:50.to jump. We then reach the hunting Lodge and the widest and biggest
:16:51. > :16:54.fence. Most riders do not even get this close when they are walking it.
:16:55. > :17:03.They just kick on and hope. Then there is a gallop down the avenue,
:17:04. > :17:08.with previous champions doubt it, and then down and up this cutting
:17:09. > :17:13.into the last section. The horses can be getting weary as they come to
:17:14. > :17:20.the second quarter. There is a drop into the water. Then turning sharp
:17:21. > :17:26.right to a severe looking goose that can cause the odd run out. Then
:17:27. > :17:30.horses come below over two boats and then they can pick on towards the
:17:31. > :17:34.house and home. A really big spread to finish with. Get over that and
:17:35. > :17:41.everybody will heave a sigh of relief. One of the early starters is
:17:42. > :17:44.Piggy French for Great Britain riding Westwood Mariner, in eighth
:17:45. > :17:51.place after the dressage. Let's see how she gets on.
:17:52. > :17:58.On a cloudy day, what a perfect place to start. Burleigh, a
:17:59. > :18:03.cross-country day, and away with Piggy French, who first rode here 12
:18:04. > :18:08.years ago on Westwood Mariner, eliminated 12 months ago at
:18:09. > :18:17.Discovery Valerie. But such a popular figure. -- Discovery Valley.
:18:18. > :18:23.Yes, a brilliant jockey in all three phases of the eventing. This horse
:18:24. > :18:29.previously ridden by Polly Stockton up to the top level and Piggy French
:18:30. > :18:34.has ridden her just over a year now. Great pathfinders for us to watch.
:18:35. > :18:38.Doesn't look like she is in a huge hurry but she is brilliant on her
:18:39. > :18:42.lines and incredibly accurate. You can see the horse shying at the
:18:43. > :18:52.runner which can have a big effect on the rhythm and flow.
:18:53. > :19:02.Piggy safely out of the arena and to Discovery Valley next. The yellow is
:19:03. > :19:07.the brave route. Let's see what Piggy French makes of it this year.
:19:08. > :19:13.A big, striding horse, Westwood A big, striding horse, Westwood
:19:14. > :19:17.Mariner. You have to be sure that you have the right speed when you
:19:18. > :19:23.have got a big, easy stride, because they can cover so much ground.
:19:24. > :19:31.Flicks through the brush. Five strides there can become three then
:19:32. > :19:38.you have a problem. Through the valley, up around the big turn and
:19:39. > :19:43.then back through it. It is when you get to the second bit that you can
:19:44. > :19:56.get into the rhythm. You can waste time earlier on the course. The
:19:57. > :20:01.leaflet taken with no problem. -- leaf pit. I wonder how she will be
:20:02. > :20:05.feeling at Discovery Valley. 12 months ago it all went wrong. The
:20:06. > :20:13.yellow is dead straight. The alternative takes you miles out. I
:20:14. > :20:16.think we will find that they will jump this brush on the way in and
:20:17. > :20:21.then holds to the left of the ditch to give themselves more room to jump
:20:22. > :20:30.that corner. Three strides before the ditch and then four after. Lots
:20:31. > :20:34.of room to make a decision and that is where Mark has been clever on the
:20:35. > :20:38.course. The direct routes will encourage people to go quick and
:20:39. > :20:44.straight, but if they go the long and twisted ways, they can add extra
:20:45. > :20:50.strides in and each stride is extra time and suddenly the time
:20:51. > :21:01.disappears from you. Look of steely determination on her face. In
:21:02. > :21:05.towards the hollow. A dip just in front of that and it can affect the
:21:06. > :21:15.striding. On the landing over the second element, the bighead, -- big
:21:16. > :21:28.hedge, it has been softened on the landing.
:21:29. > :21:37.Now the trout hatchery, one of the most famous and iconic and Burleigh.
:21:38. > :21:42.The alternative is a long way round. That yellow route is the way to go
:21:43. > :21:45.but it will not be as easy as that graphic looks. Big drop back into
:21:46. > :21:51.the water and then can they make the turn? You can see how far to the
:21:52. > :21:55.left Piggy is, that he has to waste time pulling to the right and
:21:56. > :22:00.getting lined up again for that corner. -- then she has 2 waste
:22:01. > :22:10.time. Certainly that adds five seconds and if you do that if you
:22:11. > :22:16.times, it adds up. They have to land over that log and drop and turn
:22:17. > :22:29.immediately. To the next big challenge. Oxer next. They literally
:22:30. > :22:30.bounce between these two and then a very tricky corner to finish off
:22:31. > :22:43.with. The oxer is big and wide. Last year
:22:44. > :22:50.they jumped the combination and then turned back to it which made it
:22:51. > :22:56.easier. The temptation is to gallop at it or start kicking to it and you
:22:57. > :23:04.have to meet it at rhythm. These brushes had the riders concerned. It
:23:05. > :23:10.is uphill. If they don't jump in well enough, they can crumple and
:23:11. > :23:15.land. Nice four strides. A serious corner and Piggy makes it look like
:23:16. > :23:20.something you go over at home. Scared me when I saw it early on but
:23:21. > :23:24.she is away and moving now towards halfway. It is at this point that we
:23:25. > :23:29.will get some initial indication as to how fast she is going. Might be
:23:30. > :23:31.deceptive. Does not appear there is a great deal of speed on and well
:23:32. > :23:43.outside the target time. In terms of the clock, a huge amount
:23:44. > :23:48.of time to make up. She is one minute 30 down, which seems pretty
:23:49. > :23:52.extreme to me. The beginning of the course is twisting and turning, you
:23:53. > :24:01.can't make up the time, and then you are climbing, climbing all the way
:24:02. > :24:06.up. But at this combination, really effective. Piggy did not waste any
:24:07. > :24:10.time. Kept the rhythm, two strides and made the turn look easy. That
:24:11. > :24:26.will please the guys watching at home on the monitors. Now the dairy
:24:27. > :24:33.farm. Piggy heading for the step. Two options here. I am not
:24:34. > :24:46.surprised. The quick way is quite technical. Huge risk. Most will go
:24:47. > :24:51.down those steps, I think. This is Harry on Xam and his first Burleigh.
:24:52. > :24:56.What a moment for him. Great combination. I got really
:24:57. > :25:00.overexcited watching them at Badminton. Unfortunately they had a
:25:01. > :25:04.rush of blood to the head and made a mistake halfway round the course and
:25:05. > :25:09.got knocked out of the competition. Up until that point, I thought this
:25:10. > :25:14.combination would see him eventually in the British team. Let's see what
:25:15. > :25:19.they can do at Burleigh. Harry is just 24 and tasted gold at junior
:25:20. > :25:24.level and a former stable rider with William Fox-Pitt. He certainly
:25:25. > :25:28.picked the right man to learn from. He could not have a better mental
:25:29. > :25:48.and if he can ride like William and be half as good, he will be pretty
:25:49. > :25:53.special. -- better mentor. Now Sam Griffiths aboard Happy Times, in
:25:54. > :26:00.third place after the dressage. Already looking firmly established
:26:01. > :26:06.as a good contender this week. A great partnership and Happy Times
:26:07. > :26:10.has been a great horse already for Sam. Very capable of jumping fast
:26:11. > :26:19.and clear around this course. All in the lap of the gods. Piggy French
:26:20. > :26:25.and Westwood Mariner. This is the stage where she really needs to be
:26:26. > :26:29.making inroads into that time. She was behind, significantly. Once you
:26:30. > :26:37.get over the leap at the top of the hill, it is quite a long way down
:26:38. > :26:42.and there is a chance to freewheel. If the horse has some energy, you
:26:43. > :26:46.can make up sometime. There is still quite a lot to jump and you must not
:26:47. > :26:52.sat out all of the energy trying to make up the time too quickly. Just
:26:53. > :27:00.do it gradually over the distance. That is an enormous oxer and it does
:27:01. > :27:09.not get any smaller over the years. Every time I walk, I think wow. She
:27:10. > :27:14.will be incurring time penalties pretty shortly and she is probably a
:27:15. > :27:20.good minute from the finish. Yes, her main aim now is just to get
:27:21. > :27:24.home. I don't know what her plan was with this horse, whether it was to
:27:25. > :27:30.be very competitive or whether she is riding Jakata later and is using
:27:31. > :27:36.this as a pathfinder to get the flow of it. She might put more pressure
:27:37. > :27:45.on the second horse. I think overall she could have been a bit faster in
:27:46. > :27:50.between offences. The marina, through the central arch. No
:27:51. > :27:55.apparent problems. Little incline again. One of those nasty energy
:27:56. > :28:04.bursts required. And right at the end, it is tough. We have Sam in the
:28:05. > :28:12.main arena here. Turning inside, another one to turn inside over that
:28:13. > :28:17.hurdle. I think quite a lot might go round there. He did a brilliant job
:28:18. > :28:21.of doing the tight lines, but you have to be careful not to start
:28:22. > :28:27.taking too much energy out of your voice and having strides in there
:28:28. > :28:33.but trying to be accurate. -- your horse. Sometimes keeping the flow
:28:34. > :28:36.can be more beneficial. Plenty of twists and turns on this course and
:28:37. > :28:44.you want to minimise them as much as possible. Happy Times has been
:28:45. > :28:52.ninth, 12th and 13th here and is no stranger to this big stage. Going
:28:53. > :28:56.well early. Piggy flying now. Already one minute over the time but
:28:57. > :29:00.she has made up half a minute from what we saw earlier. She has
:29:01. > :29:05.certainly increased the speed over the latter part. She will be
:29:06. > :29:09.thrilled with that. She is clear. The picnic table is the last
:29:10. > :29:15.obstacle and she clocks a total penalty of 75, setting the early
:29:16. > :29:22.pace. The irrepressible and ever popular Piggy French. Quite a lot of
:29:23. > :29:28.time over but it will be interesting to see how she works out. The ground
:29:29. > :29:34.is perfect. We saw two voices going inside the time last year and it
:29:35. > :29:41.might be similar this time. -- two horses. They will need to go quicker
:29:42. > :29:49.than Piggy French. Sam Griffiths through the leaf pit and a winner at
:29:50. > :29:53.Badminton as well. Will his eyes be on the prize already? All of the
:29:54. > :29:57.riders will be thinking about it a bit and hoping to win. At the moment
:29:58. > :30:02.he will be focused on the cross-country. Another one to put
:30:03. > :30:06.three strides in before that ditch. More three strides than anything
:30:07. > :30:11.else, I think. If they do two, they can pay the job, hit the rising
:30:12. > :30:30.ground, crumple on landing and mucked up the brush corner. I'm
:30:31. > :30:34.pleased to get around. I got around the last five attempts, I tried. I'm
:30:35. > :30:38.gutted to be quite so slow. I lost it at the beginning. Minute mark I
:30:39. > :30:43.was way off. Two minute mark I was way off. I wanted to get on with T I
:30:44. > :30:46.had a few pickles. Turning right was an issue today which I never had
:30:47. > :30:50.before. It was just wasting time. Just all the time, turning that way
:30:51. > :30:54.and coming out of the water, I think, jumped him big and had to do
:30:55. > :31:02.a loop around, so I was just wasting. To the Trout Hatchery and
:31:03. > :31:07.Sam Griffiths with Happy times. We heard Tiggy saying she wasted
:31:08. > :31:11.time. She jumped big over this log. The neater they can be in, the
:31:12. > :31:19.quicker they can turn to this final element. Sam didn't waste a lot of
:31:20. > :31:28.time, but I think we'll see some quicker than that. Back we go with
:31:29. > :31:33.Harry Dzenis, heading towards the completion of his round. We have
:31:34. > :31:41.already seen Tiggy a minute-plus over. Now we have Harry, the same,
:31:42. > :31:45.almost 1 minute, 25. That seems tonight way the course is going. But
:31:46. > :31:52.a good combination. A star for the future. He is thrilled. No wonder he
:31:53. > :32:05.is saying "good boy." They are all running. Good boy, indeed. Hapy
:32:06. > :32:11.times again. He flew that. It is a maximum height and spread. It is a
:32:12. > :32:18.big fence. Really, it is bread and butter to these horses. This, on the
:32:19. > :32:27.other hand is much meatier. Beautiful. Perfect line. Didn't
:32:28. > :32:35.waste a fraction of a second. Off Sam goes, powering towards the
:32:36. > :32:40.half-way stage. Yeah, they will be taking a at their watch now. It's
:32:41. > :32:45.difficult to tell just where they should be. As I said, the beginning
:32:46. > :32:49.of the horse. The first couple of minutes, horses are going to be down
:32:50. > :32:55.in time and they'll always be chasing that clock. They'll have to
:32:56. > :32:59.be brave but not take ridiculously silly risks and cause a runnout
:33:00. > :33:03.Through the next combination. He was good there as well. Well, done,
:33:04. > :33:09.Harry, what a Burghley debut for you? It was great. Sam was
:33:10. > :33:13.incredible. He was really pulling me towards the end. It is a great
:33:14. > :33:19.feeling when they are like that. Now, Arthur and for the United
:33:20. > :33:26.States, Allison Springer. Currently sixth after the dressage. Into the
:33:27. > :33:31.arena. She's taken a very tight line to the second element there. Arthur
:33:32. > :33:40.had a little bit of a look to his left. But it didn't lose
:33:41. > :33:44.concentration for the jump. Capability's Cutting for Sam
:33:45. > :33:49.Griffiths. A couple of minutes away, perhaps from the end of this cross
:33:50. > :33:57.country for him When he takes the quick way out of there, it is much
:33:58. > :34:03.closer to the lip coming out of Capability's's Cutting but a much
:34:04. > :34:11.narrower spread. It should ride better for me. Theft horse's behind
:34:12. > :34:18.legs in front of him. He is coming down the water towards home. The
:34:19. > :34:22.riders have to make a quick decision about how brave they go in and how
:34:23. > :34:26.fast. There is a big drop. It is about nine inches of water that's
:34:27. > :34:32.going to drag on the horse's legs, if they go in too fast.
:34:33. > :34:37.Clare Balding: This is one of the most popular spots to WAP. You can
:34:38. > :34:43.see everybody getting close up the bridge. The next horse we'll see
:34:44. > :34:46.is Sam Griffiths on hapy tie.s they are
:34:47. > :34:49.is Sam Griffiths on hapy tie.s they coming towards the end of the
:34:50. > :34:54.course. He got close to that one, oh, close to both and away and he
:34:55. > :34:58.can kick on for home. We'll see him at the finish shortly.
:34:59. > :35:05.Back with Arthur and Allison Springer now, heading down towards
:35:06. > :35:09.the Discover Valley. They are an experienced combination. They have
:35:10. > :35:13.been here at Burghley in the past. They have been part of the American
:35:14. > :35:20.team in the past. He has just come off from a bit of time off with a
:35:21. > :35:27.little injury. Schiavone will be looking for oar good round. -- she
:35:28. > :35:31.will be. So hapy times and all eyes will be on the clock. This is
:35:32. > :35:36.certainly the quickest so far. Pushes through and 24 seconds
:35:37. > :35:43.outside of the set time. But that, by some way, sets the standard. I
:35:44. > :35:48.think big time sets the standard. He is the fastest we have seen. That's
:35:49. > :35:52.the time everybody will be chasing. We might not see
:35:53. > :35:55.the time everybody will be chasing. time. A steep drop into the water
:35:56. > :36:01.there and Allison flops up his neck. A quick
:36:02. > :36:06.recovery, and looks good. Well hapy times is getting the equivalent of
:36:07. > :36:11.the Ice Bucket Challenge. -- Happy Times. You got held twice for long
:36:12. > :36:15.periods of time. A long period of time. Originally I thought it was
:36:16. > :36:19.going to work into my hands because the cross country is such an
:36:20. > :36:23.endurance time but in reality when I got stopped the second time t threw
:36:24. > :36:31.me out of my rhythm. It took me a while to get going and these are big
:36:32. > :36:38.fences to be starting all over at. Alison spring coming down towards
:36:39. > :36:52.the Rolex Combination, time not bad, but again, so. This horse's grand'
:36:53. > :36:55.mother, was secretariat. Would you believe that, that was a
:36:56. > :36:59.nightmare. She has come back from a break. Short of another good horse,
:37:00. > :37:05.follow-up from this horse and that will rule her right out. Andrew Hoy,
:37:06. > :37:10.the legendary Australian. Hard to believe, isn't it, he won here 35
:37:11. > :37:16.years ago. He is on Rutherglen and fifth after the dressage. Yeah,
:37:17. > :37:23.always great to watch across the country, Andrew. Rutherglen, an
:37:24. > :37:27.enormous stride. He makes these fences look so easy but very, very
:37:28. > :37:41.experienced partnership now. ! -- Adjust tops over those angle
:37:42. > :37:50.rails. ! Now over the water. The Trout Hatchery. A big stand-off
:37:51. > :37:54.there, actually. ! How good was that? That was superb. A lovely
:37:55. > :38:06.line. Didn't waste any seconds whatsoever. Looking very, very good
:38:07. > :38:19.indeed. Iz zy Taylor about to go. Izzy. Izzy's great-aunt won here in
:38:20. > :38:22.1961. A attempted young rider She is a great star of the future. A star
:38:23. > :38:28.already but she has more great things to come as we watch Andrew
:38:29. > :38:35.Hoy now. He is at the half way point. 22 seconds over. Very similar
:38:36. > :38:42.to al-Allison on Arthur but I doubt we'll see the runnout here. Just
:38:43. > :38:53.incredible. He makes it look effortless. It was worth watching
:38:54. > :38:59.that again. Never in any doubt. The horse knew exactly where he was
:39:00. > :39:04.going. Andrew just looks like he is happy to be a passenger. Heading
:39:05. > :39:08.down to the Dairy Mound again. You will remember, the horse, I'm sure
:39:09. > :39:14.from the Olympic Games, Rutherglen. Competed in London. Finished 13th
:39:15. > :39:22.there. Here he goes. Most have gone down the steps there, but Andrew is
:39:23. > :39:26.turning back to the second of them. He doesn't get high but jumps it
:39:27. > :39:36.beautifully. Takes a funny line there, I have to say. It was almost
:39:37. > :39:48.as though he got lost. Back with Izzy Taylor. Discovery Valley. She
:39:49. > :39:53.was going well at Badminton, before slipping up. It was good to see how
:39:54. > :39:58.well he jumped through Discovery Valley there. She had a runnout with
:39:59. > :40:01.this horse, had a skinny at the European Championships and then
:40:02. > :40:08.another runnout at Badminton in the spring. Always been nearly there and
:40:09. > :40:12.she's such a good pilot. But she has to have her wits about her. She has
:40:13. > :40:17.to keep riding this little mare all the way. A talented horse but just
:40:18. > :40:26.needs a bit of assistance from on top. 16 hands. One of the smallest,
:40:27. > :40:31.as you say, one of the smallest in the entire contest, as she heads
:40:32. > :40:37.back to Discovery Valley, with these fabulous crowds either side. Craning
:40:38. > :40:41.for the best view. And this is probably one of the most popular
:40:42. > :40:45.spots to watch on the entire track Well, look at the cloud. Up the
:40:46. > :40:48.bank, behind the strings everywhere. It is great they are clapping and
:40:49. > :40:54.cheering these riders as they go along. You do notice it when you are
:40:55. > :40:58.out there. Well, what about this, Andrew Hoy - he looks as though he
:40:59. > :41:03.was walking home. He was going so well. We saw him out of the Dairy
:41:04. > :41:07.Mound. Well, that is a big shock, because he looked fantastic from
:41:08. > :41:12.what we saw. I do know that the horse had a bit of a virus early on,
:41:13. > :41:15.before this competition, so perhaps he didn't feel as though he was in
:41:16. > :41:22.great form. He certainly looked as though he was in form and Izzy,
:41:23. > :41:29.phenomenal at the Trout Hatchery. A great close-up shot. You can see
:41:30. > :41:32.Izzy already looking and turning before she had landed into the
:41:33. > :41:37.water. That's exactly what the riders need to be doing, get that
:41:38. > :41:42.tight turn, then you jump up the step and you can see he is focussed
:41:43. > :41:51.on the last L that was a great shot of study. He was so responsive. Now
:41:52. > :41:57.Marilyn Little on FRDemieter. Marilyn, for many years, known as a
:41:58. > :42:02.really good show jumper. A top show jumper. Jumped in the American team
:42:03. > :42:06.for a many years. Now she has taken up eventing with a vengeance. Is
:42:07. > :42:11.looking good on this really talented horse. Good jumping. She is not
:42:12. > :42:22.wasting any time in the first part of the course. 10th after the
:42:23. > :42:28.dressage. Marilyn's first Burghley. It must be so exciting for her. She
:42:29. > :42:32.is a qualified, pilot, you know, a talented girl. A hairy moment there.
:42:33. > :42:38.A bit of indecision about what stride to get to that ditch. We've
:42:39. > :42:43.had pilots turning to eventing in the past, actually. It seems to be
:42:44. > :42:52.they are related somehow, going at speed and getting up in the air.
:42:53. > :42:58.Some curious fascination. Thanks goodness for that Azizy Taylor comes
:42:59. > :43:02.now to the Maltings. -- as Izzy comes to the Maltings. Trying to
:43:03. > :43:09.improve her position from dressage where she was 12th after the cross
:43:10. > :43:14.country stage. We saw her jump that big wide objectioner and give the
:43:15. > :43:18.horse a couple of taps. That was to say -- concentrate, pay attention,
:43:19. > :43:22.we have a difficult fence, I want you focussing on me. You can see a
:43:23. > :43:26.lovely jump through the bounce. Then gets on to the line for this corner.
:43:27. > :43:35.You can't just see how big and difficult that corner is, until you
:43:36. > :43:43.are actually standing right at it. Clare Balding: Sam Griffiths is the
:43:44. > :43:49.leader. But this is the guy who could change it but this is Paget.
:43:50. > :43:54.You can see the grease on the horse's leg. That's so if he comes
:43:55. > :43:59.close to a fence, he won't get any sliders or splinters. He won the
:44:00. > :44:08.title last year, this horse, but had it taken away before he testified
:44:09. > :44:16.for a banned substance. They appealed and. He would dearly love
:44:17. > :44:27.to win this title and for there to be no question marks about it. We
:44:28. > :44:36.will see Jock Paget pretty shortly. Sheer Briarl narks ds Matilda. --
:44:37. > :44:42.here is. -- Briarlands Matilda. I think it is
:44:43. > :44:47.the fastest we have seen so far. A quick little mare. She put in an
:44:48. > :44:54.extra stride but didn't deviate, didn't try to go off, which has been
:44:55. > :44:59.an issue. Marilyn Little to the Trout Hatchery on Demeter. Well,
:45:00. > :45:04.they were sixth in Kentucky earlier in the year. They are perfectly
:45:05. > :45:09.capable. Just losing the knitting. Gets a in a bit of a mess. Comes to
:45:10. > :45:16.nearly an standstill and still jumps. It wasn't pretty, but it was
:45:17. > :45:23.effective. Now Murray Lampard riding under the clocks. A 43-year-old
:45:24. > :45:27.Australian, 17th in dressage. This horse was twice a winner as a
:45:28. > :45:31.racehorse in New Zealand. It is extraordinary, how many of the New
:45:32. > :45:37.Zealand thoroughbreds win on the from the and then they come, turn to
:45:38. > :45:43.eventing, come over here and they are riding at four star level.
:45:44. > :45:53.Extraordinary. To the Halting's Oxer, and Marilyn Little. A big
:45:54. > :45:59.jumping horse. -- the Malting's Oxer. Let's see how accurate he was?
:46:00. > :46:07.He was just messy at the Hatchery but it was partly the big jumping
:46:08. > :46:13.that got him into trouble. Oh, breaks the win there. No risk am
:46:14. > :46:19.coming off or having a fall but that's a 21 penalties. We will see
:46:20. > :46:23.it again in slow motion. -- no risk of coming off. Jumps the bounce well
:46:24. > :46:27.enough, theb then a long four strides. Some are going down in
:46:28. > :46:32.five. She looked as though she tried to go in three and is a long way
:46:33. > :46:37.off. The horse struggles to make the distance, breaks that pin, so 21
:46:38. > :46:46.penalties. It was hard enough beforehand, now it has got harder
:46:47. > :46:51.for her. Izzy Taylor again, to the Cuttings. About two minutes from
:46:52. > :46:56.home. Just adds a little stride in there. She gives her a tap on the
:46:57. > :47:00.bottom to say - come on, try harder. They are getting a little leg weary
:47:01. > :47:07.coming down the hill. It is towards the end of the horse. That's a big
:47:08. > :47:11.effort coming out of Capability's. And do this massive fence.
:47:12. > :47:20.Beautiful. Still got the scope and the jump at this stage on the
:47:21. > :47:24.course, it is good to see. Oh, a little bit sticky in there. This
:47:25. > :47:30.wasn't the perfect spot. Close going in, so the mare slowed right down
:47:31. > :47:33.but jumped the brush in the middle well You can't really drive the
:47:34. > :47:38.horse into a water situation like that, Ian. You need a bit of
:47:39. > :47:43.impulsing, power, but, if you go too fast, you do risk that drag on the
:47:44. > :47:49.horse's legs as they hit the water and especially a drop. It just adds
:47:50. > :47:54.an element of risk. So you've got to try to save time but you have to be
:47:55. > :48:00.safe. So these boats under this bridge
:48:01. > :48:06.here are riding well. You they can go through the next arch if they
:48:07. > :48:11.want, to but it is a real time waster. Jock Paget and Clifton
:48:12. > :48:15.Promise about to begin their first round. They missed the time last
:48:16. > :48:19.year by just a fraction. A repeat will probably see them as number one
:48:20. > :48:25.contender heading into the Sunday as well but a lot can happen, Ian.
:48:26. > :48:28.Well, it is a very fast horse and Jock is a positive rider cross
:48:29. > :48:33.country. They did a brilliant round last year. He was held on the course
:48:34. > :48:38.at one point because the horse had a bit of blood on its mouth. The Grand
:48:39. > :48:42.Jury had a look at it. It almost gave the horse a bit of a breather
:48:43. > :48:47.but they are certainly very capable and very quick across the country.
:48:48. > :48:51.And interestingly enough, he is going round, the slightly longer
:48:52. > :48:55.route, but you should be able to keep more speed but having said
:48:56. > :49:00.that, Jock's adding quite a lot of strides in there. A little bit slow,
:49:01. > :49:12.I have to say, wasting a bit of time in that arena To Jock Paget under
:49:13. > :49:16.way. Meanwhile Briarlands Matilda and Izzy Taylor heading towards the
:49:17. > :49:21.end. In pretty good time, too. She will be thrilled. As we have said,
:49:22. > :49:25.the odd hiccup in the past but a fantastic round. She rode
:49:26. > :49:29.brilliantly at Badminton as well. Just that slight slip but it is all
:49:30. > :49:33.clear this time. 28 seconds over, into second position. That is
:49:34. > :49:38.fantastic. Not only ll it be great for -- not only will it be great for
:49:39. > :49:44.her, but it is great for the British selectors in the future. ! Back with
:49:45. > :49:48.Murray lamb period now -- Lamperd now.
:49:49. > :49:53.Now moving towards the half way stage of his cross country round.
:49:54. > :49:58.This is the first time I have seen this horse go cross country. Quite
:49:59. > :50:00.busy, quite active but it certainly jumps and it looks as though it
:50:01. > :50:07.saves on its line very well. Very saves on its line very well. Very
:50:08. > :50:12.accurate. One of these riders that we see
:50:13. > :50:18.quite a lot of now, with a camera on his helmet to film his round, right
:50:19. > :50:24.in the middle of his head. He looks like sigh clops with the one eye. I
:50:25. > :50:28.have to say I hate the wretched things. They look silly and
:50:29. > :50:32.ridiculous. If you watch the film afterwards t gives you a headache.
:50:33. > :50:40.It is very hard to know what he is capable of achieving. 627nd at
:50:41. > :50:46.Badminton. 62nd at Badminton. Pretty inexperienced. A bit of an unknown
:50:47. > :50:51.quantity, to say the least. Well, he is not bad on the clock as well As I
:50:52. > :50:56.say, a little bit busy sometimes at the fences. He spends a lot of time
:50:57. > :51:02.setting the horses up, as you can see. That wastes seconds at all the
:51:03. > :51:06.fences, but the jumping ability and the ridibility is fantastic. He has
:51:07. > :51:14.kicked a flag out of the way. No problem. CLARE BALDING: Did you feel
:51:15. > :51:19.you had to be aggressive? She, she has in the past run out. She is
:51:20. > :51:23.always looking at the flags. You have to mean it. The time was tight.
:51:24. > :51:28.She is a quick horse but she is normally there or thereabouts with
:51:29. > :51:33.the time. I knew we wouldn't be - someone could be quicker but the
:51:34. > :51:38.time is tight. A job well done for Izzy Taylor.
:51:39. > :51:44.Happy times then, leading, currently from Sam Griffiths and Izzy second
:51:45. > :51:53.at the moment. What say is Jock Paget going to have on this
:51:54. > :51:59.fabulous, engross event? Clifton Promise continues his round now. --
:52:00. > :52:05.engrossing. Jock is certainly looking pretty focussed. A good jump
:52:06. > :52:11.over that Oxer. And wastes no time. Really accelerating at that big
:52:12. > :52:20.ditch and hedge. They come down to the Trout Hatchery. ! Quite an
:52:21. > :52:28.intense area of jumps this. Takes the tightest possible line over that
:52:29. > :52:36.ditch. Now, what can he do here? Very quick into the water.
:52:37. > :52:43.Well, that's interesting. He did a good enough turn in the water. He
:52:44. > :52:47.could just have gone straight to that brush. That wasted two or three
:52:48. > :52:52.seconds. Unusual, unusual. You never quite know what is going through a
:52:53. > :52:56.horse's mind or the rider's mind and only the rider knows what feeling
:52:57. > :53:00.they are getting. You can see him going for the turn, and instead of
:53:01. > :53:17.turning left and making quite a tight turn into it, he wastes all
:53:18. > :53:26.that are extra seconds. At Stamford Station we can see
:53:27. > :53:31.Murray Lamperd from Australia. This horse is full of running and jumping
:53:32. > :53:36.well. For me Murray wastes a bit of time setting up for each fence. He
:53:37. > :53:42.is very close to that optimum time now. So another one to get quite a
:53:43. > :53:48.few time faults, I would think. You can certainly see the racehorse in
:53:49. > :53:53.him, can't you? Yes. He has endless stamina. He is as quick asp anyone
:53:54. > :54:00.out of that final water and galloping on well. So, Jock Paget.
:54:01. > :54:04.An early indication as to how strongly he is going here on Clifton
:54:05. > :54:11.Promise? Again, another indication - this time is hard to achieve. Slow,
:54:12. > :54:16.compared to quite a lot, actually. I think Matilda and Izzy were up here
:54:17. > :54:19.on 15 seconds. He is 34 seconds down on the clock. Very quick actually
:54:20. > :54:23.over the fence and through the beginnings. Making nothing of the
:54:24. > :54:35.question there. But he's certainly a bit slower.
:54:36. > :54:45.So up to the Dairy Mound. Will he be another one to go down those steps
:54:46. > :54:49.or do a quick turn? The steps only add two or three seconds and it is
:54:50. > :54:54.so much less of a risk that I really don't see the point in going the
:54:55. > :55:04.quick way here. He is going straight for the steps. Wastes no time. Turns
:55:05. > :55:09.away and quickly back into the rhythm. Look at that determined
:55:10. > :55:20.grimace on his face. He wants this prize, doesn't he? He wants it. So
:55:21. > :55:25.Under the Clocks about to finish with Murray Lamperd. Over the picnic
:55:26. > :55:31.table. Just coasts across the line. And third position on a penalty of
:55:32. > :55:35.69 exactly. Hugely satisfactorially. We didn't
:55:36. > :55:40.know much about him, Ian beforehand. A good round. I met him a bit in
:55:41. > :55:45.Australia, I know him as a rider but the first time I have seen that
:55:46. > :55:52.horse. A good combination, exciting prospect for the future. We know
:55:53. > :55:57.this young man, this is Bill Levit. Sit tight. Yikes, not the most
:55:58. > :56:01.promising start. The horse had a good shy at that non-jumping
:56:02. > :56:05.element. Left a knee on the middle jump. You can see him here, he is
:56:06. > :56:09.looking to the left, which means the turn is tight. Suddenly that second
:56:10. > :56:14.element is on him. He leaves his right front leg, hits it hard. Bill
:56:15. > :56:18.does a brilliant job. Already looking over his shoulder for that
:56:19. > :56:26.final element. He needs to settle down a bit.
:56:27. > :56:32.The famous Cottesmore Leap for Jock Paget. He made it look easy. That's
:56:33. > :56:37.where he pulled up last year. I seem to remember a jump judge trying to
:56:38. > :56:50.stop him but he jumped and pulled up sensibly. Back to the Leaf Pitt.
:56:51. > :56:56.-- Leaf Pit. And Levett. R and judging by the way
:56:57. > :57:04.he clam bored around in the arena, Bill might have to improvise a fair
:57:05. > :57:09.bit. -- and judging by the way he clambored.
:57:10. > :57:14.Yes, the horse is keen to get on, it is strong and positive, so he needs
:57:15. > :57:19.to just make sure he has got the horse anchored before he gets to
:57:20. > :57:23.some of these fences, but it has certainly got the right attitude,
:57:24. > :57:28.looking ahead, positive, looking for the next jump and meaning business,
:57:29. > :57:35.even if he does take the flag out. CLARE BALDING: Murray, how did that
:57:36. > :57:40.feel? You know what, he has hardly started that season. It felt amazing
:57:41. > :57:45.in the end. In the meantime it is just a job and I was working at my
:57:46. > :57:51.job. Back with Clifton Promise now at
:57:52. > :57:53.Stamford Station. Already, as he approaches the Splash, you can tell
:57:54. > :57:57.he will be subject to time penalties. There is no way he is
:57:58. > :58:00.going to make up this ground. He is going to be slower than last year.
:58:01. > :58:07.He has been slower all the way round. It is interesting, you know.
:58:08. > :58:11.He took this horse Totti World Games last week. Had a run out. And
:58:12. > :58:14.because the team were out of the competition, gave up and decided to
:58:15. > :58:18.come here. I don't know whether last week and the problems he has had
:58:19. > :58:21.over the last year has affected his confidence but he has certainly not
:58:22. > :58:30.been quite as positive and aggressive as he was cross country
:58:31. > :58:36.last year, 12 months ago. He's still driving well but he hasn't got quite
:58:37. > :58:40.that aggression he had. Now he is near the end of the course he has
:58:41. > :58:44.opened up a bit but it is perhaps too little, too lighted. He will get
:58:45. > :58:52.quite a few time -- too late. He will get a few time penalties. Back
:58:53. > :58:58.to Bill Levvet. -- Levett. A bit of adjustment going
:58:59. > :59:03.on there by Bill. The horse is keen and strong. He is having to say -
:59:04. > :59:08.pay attention to me, every now and again. The horse is listening to him
:59:09. > :59:12.- just. But he has his own mind on the job. He is certainly making
:59:13. > :59:16.nothing of the fences and he is not wasting any time. He is quite quick
:59:17. > :59:20.across the ground and quick through these combinations. And Jock Paget
:59:21. > :59:27.and Clifton Promise now into the finish. The picnic table to end
:59:28. > :59:37.with. Sam Griffiths on 49.8. He is outside of that but, still, into
:59:38. > :59:44.second place. Jock Paget in the mix. Clare Balding: Zara Phillips isn't
:59:45. > :59:49.riding but has come hot on the heels of the world equestrian games. How
:59:50. > :59:55.chuffed were you to be on the team? Massively chuff. You could tell by
:59:56. > :59:58.my reaction. I was so pleased to get a double clear and back at
:59:59. > :00:03.Championship level. Does that fire you up and make you really keen to
:00:04. > :00:09.be in Rio? Definitely I kind of had my goals set out but, you know, now,
:00:10. > :00:12.hopefully they are looking a bit more likely - a little bit more
:00:13. > :00:16.likely but as riders we still have to qualify. So we have to go out and
:00:17. > :00:21.get another good result, even though the team has qualified. Really? Yes.
:00:22. > :00:25.What you have to do Badminton or another course? Yes, whatever, some
:00:26. > :00:30.three-day next year or within the next 12 months, I think. How strange
:00:31. > :00:35.is it to be here and not riding? It is strange. It is good in a way
:00:36. > :00:42.because you can come and watch and not have to do all the worrying,
:00:43. > :00:45.but, of course, I would love to be out heemplt I love Boyerly. A
:00:46. > :00:57.fantastic track. It is tough. You know you have something good at the
:00:58. > :01:01.end of the course. Given Jock Paget's time, seven or eight riders
:01:02. > :01:05.will be confident they can go better than that. Here is one of
:01:06. > :01:05.will be confident they can go better Karin Donckers from Belgium. The
:01:06. > :01:11.five-time Karin Donckers from Belgium. The
:01:12. > :01:20.experience. You'd experience but she is fairly squawking at her voice. --
:01:21. > :01:25.huge experience. Not sure if she is swearing at him in her language or
:01:26. > :01:33.if it is encouragement but it is working. Looking good. How much does
:01:34. > :01:36.it mean to you to be back here? There must have been periods when
:01:37. > :01:41.you thought you never would be. I thought I would not come back this
:01:42. > :01:44.year. I thought I would get back here to the competition scene, but I
:01:45. > :01:48.thought I would get to the World Championships and I thought I would
:01:49. > :01:52.do something great there and not have a horse for Burghley. This is
:01:53. > :01:58.plan B and I am very happy with it. I love Burghley and I am happy to be
:01:59. > :02:04.here. Do you feel you have to prove yourself to people? Always. I have
:02:05. > :02:07.come over to people and I am trying to make a business and a living and
:02:08. > :02:11.you have to get results to get noticed and I always ride with that
:02:12. > :02:13.pressure. Obviously there is more pressure now with everything that
:02:14. > :02:17.has happened. To be honest, I did pressure now with everything that
:02:18. > :02:21.not think about it out there. I was thinking about the
:02:22. > :02:28.not think about it out there. I was Donckers on herb horse, contesting
:02:29. > :02:35.her first 4-star event. In form after the World Equestrian Games.
:02:36. > :02:43.Yes, and an experienced rider, as you say. She has been such an
:02:44. > :02:55.effective competitor over the years and it has worked for her. Sometimes
:02:56. > :03:00.it might look like you want to pull up their stirrups but then they
:03:01. > :03:06.would be out of balance. She heads to the Rolex Combination. Nice with
:03:07. > :03:17.him but it seems quite slow to the eye. We will get a gauge any second
:03:18. > :03:21.now. Yes, well of time. -- off time. I don't think she will be too
:03:22. > :03:30.concerned. She has had some brilliant horses over the years and
:03:31. > :03:34.has done a great job with them. Not always the fastest at cross-country
:03:35. > :03:42.but she has had horses capable of doing the job. She patted the horse
:03:43. > :03:47.and wiped off the sweat of her breaches. Very ladylike! And Bill
:03:48. > :03:57.Levett with improvised, the ten-year-old. -- Improvise. A very
:03:58. > :04:09.respectable fourth position and a punch of the air from him. Now some
:04:10. > :04:14.of those less fortunate. Sarah Bullimore and Valentino V
:04:15. > :04:22.approaching the Malting's. Price and Ringwood Sky Boy parting company in
:04:23. > :04:31.the arena. Just Ironic depositing Craig Nicolai into the lake.
:04:32. > :04:38.the arena. Just Ironic depositing O'Donoghue and pirates taking a
:04:39. > :04:47.crunching fall at the Malting's. -- Pirate. A heavy tumble as well for
:04:48. > :04:57.Algebra and Natalie Blundell al at the Classics Leaf Pit. Magennis
:04:58. > :05:16.approaching the Rolex Combination for Jim Newsam. Neil Spratt denied
:05:17. > :05:23.by Malting's. Germany's Kai Ruder and Gryffindor in trouble at the
:05:24. > :05:26.bounce. The good news is that all of those horses appeared to be fine as
:05:27. > :05:39.they went for further veterinary checks. Happy Times leading. Clifton
:05:40. > :05:46.promised in second place. KBIS Briarlands Matilda in third. And
:05:47. > :05:52.Improvise in fourth place but some big guns to come. The 28-year-old
:05:53. > :05:59.American, Hannah Sue Burnett with Harbour Pilot through the Trout
:06:00. > :06:05.Hatchery. Chucked onto the horse's neck, so wasted some time on
:06:06. > :06:12.landing. Lots of time on the turn and she is clear, which is what
:06:13. > :06:18.matters. 14th after the dressage. Her first Burghley. Steep learning
:06:19. > :06:23.curve, isn't it? And a steep drop, too. You could see that her head
:06:24. > :06:28.dropped. As soon as you allow your head to drop, you are in the wrong
:06:29. > :06:34.position to make the turn and so she had to add an extra strides, wasting
:06:35. > :06:43.time and adding distance. But they are still clear. The time that you
:06:44. > :06:48.have posted is pretty competitive. Top four or five. Yes, he is a quick
:06:49. > :06:52.course. He is one of those horses that gets adrenaline and he was a
:06:53. > :06:56.bit hard to manage at the end. Fortunately most of the work is done
:06:57. > :07:00.in the first two thirds so he wasn't running away with me but if you had
:07:01. > :07:07.some really technical and difficult lines, it would be much more
:07:08. > :07:14.difficult. He has stepped up to the plate today and given me a great
:07:15. > :07:21.ride. Really pleased. They'll is chuffed. Karin Donckers heads
:07:22. > :07:29.towards the end of her round. Pretty steady. Not spectacular with the
:07:30. > :07:32.speed. Be surprising if she can hold her ninth position from the
:07:33. > :07:40.dressage. She seems to have dropped back here. Yes, she has not been
:07:41. > :07:46.that quick. But she is hailing a cab with her left hand. The horse is
:07:47. > :07:50.still jumping brilliantly. A of scope and the stamina is there. Once
:07:51. > :07:54.it has more experience, I should think the next time we see her
:07:55. > :08:09.happy. Competition, they would more competitive on the clock. -- next
:08:10. > :08:20.time we see her she will be used to the competition. That was pretty
:08:21. > :08:27.easy. This is a lovely horse. New combination coming over from
:08:28. > :08:33.America. You can see how happy Hannah is, smiling as she leaves the
:08:34. > :08:41.fence. Tremendous buzz for her. They were 15th in Kentucky earlier this
:08:42. > :08:46.year. By all accounts, only just missed out on selection for the
:08:47. > :08:50.games in the United States. That gives you an idea of the standards
:08:51. > :08:54.they are achieving together. And she is going the quick way, which is
:08:55. > :09:03.brave for a first timer at Burnley and she makes it pretty easily. --
:09:04. > :09:13.Burghley. Karin Donckers is well outside the time but finishing off
:09:14. > :09:18.on Lamicell Unique. Not bad for that little horse. She will be thrilled
:09:19. > :09:25.and you have to be happy with that. A minute and a half overtime but it
:09:26. > :09:35.is proving almost impossible to get the time. Gemma Tattersall, 27th
:09:36. > :09:40.after the dressage, and Arctic Soul. A real competitor, Gemma. She has
:09:41. > :09:44.had a lot of different horses coming up through the ranks of juniors and
:09:45. > :09:55.young riders. Now a serious competitor at 4-star level. And a
:09:56. > :09:59.flyer. Just over half a minute and punching the air. Hannah is very
:10:00. > :10:05.happy and she has every right to be. That was a brilliant round. Yes, she
:10:06. > :10:10.has been around Kentucky but Burghley is something else on top of
:10:11. > :10:15.that. She certainly held her own and she has done her country proud
:10:16. > :10:18.indeed. Piggy French's second ride of the day on Jakata. Second
:10:19. > :10:31.Badminton together back in 2011. Hannah Sue Burnett has just got
:10:32. > :10:36.round her first Burghley course. You have found your mum. What did you
:10:37. > :10:40.tell her? Nothing because she was screaming at the top of her lungs
:10:41. > :10:48.and saying you did it! How did it feel? It felt fast. He was on it. I
:10:49. > :10:52.was so happy with him all the way round. Looking for the flags. He did
:10:53. > :10:56.not back off from anything. Sometimes he wants to run so the
:10:57. > :10:59.riding is tough with him. As soon as I jumped through the first
:11:00. > :11:04.combination I knew he would be great because he was turning and being
:11:05. > :11:09.awesome. Hannah just about the happiest young lady I have seen so
:11:10. > :11:14.far. This is Gemma Tattersall. How will she be after the round on
:11:15. > :11:17.Arctic Soul? Short listed for the World Equestrian Games and
:11:18. > :11:22.eliminated at Badminton after riding the wrong way having gone well
:11:23. > :11:29.otherwise. Now the Rolex Combination. Looking good. Yes, and
:11:30. > :11:35.good on the time, too, just 15 seconds over. This thoroughbred
:11:36. > :11:39.should not find the hills and the stamina too much for him. A great
:11:40. > :11:46.gallop. She is having quite a job setting him up for the Dairy Farm.
:11:47. > :11:50.Most of the horses having to work quite hard as they turn into this
:11:51. > :12:01.one at the top. She is going the quick way. That is brave. Will it
:12:02. > :12:06.work? Good girl. Very positive. Arctic Soul's father was a
:12:07. > :12:13.tremendous racehorse, trained by Clive Brittain. Not that many years
:12:14. > :12:26.ago. Now Jakata into the Trout Hatchery. I am delighted to CPD
:12:27. > :12:31.riding at this level. -- to see Piggy. She has had some horses going
:12:32. > :12:38.off over the years and to have two back at this level is fantastic. Now
:12:39. > :12:42.we welcome into the arena The Deputy and Jonelle Price. 28 after the
:12:43. > :12:48.dressage but The Deputy finished fifth here last year so a
:12:49. > :12:50.fascinating contender. Yes, she turned inside. The horse had a
:12:51. > :13:02.little luck and she came inside again at the final element. Probably
:13:03. > :13:07.part of the reason is that the horse looks so incredibly polite. As he is
:13:08. > :13:11.galloping down there, I envisage a city gent with spectacles on his
:13:12. > :13:21.galloping down there, I envisage a nose. A charming horse. Jonelle had
:13:22. > :13:26.a fantastic World Equestrian Games, finishing fourth, and giving her
:13:27. > :13:34.horse one of the great rounds of modern times. It was wonderful. The
:13:35. > :13:40.horse was produced by Karen Dixon, one of the great team members of the
:13:41. > :13:50.past. Jonelle Price is in superb form. Look at the determination on
:13:51. > :13:58.that face! She is holding her back, saying wait for me, but the horse is
:13:59. > :14:02.saying, I am going, mum! Gemma's first ride here since 2007, and she
:14:03. > :14:08.seems to be enjoying the experience. Arctic Soul heading for
:14:09. > :14:11.home. The combinations are not that tricky towards the end of the course
:14:12. > :14:18.at Burnley but they are going in and out of the water twice. --
:14:19. > :14:29.Burghley. That in itself can sap your energy. Slightly hurdling the
:14:30. > :14:33.boats but going well. Piggy French with Jakata, again well off the
:14:34. > :14:38.clock. Only really four big names to come and the clock has not been done
:14:39. > :14:45.yet. I am surprised. Last year was a huge effort. Only a couple inside
:14:46. > :14:51.the time. They really had to work hard for it. The ground looked
:14:52. > :14:57.perfect and was beautifully produced but maybe it is taking more out of
:14:58. > :15:01.the horses than we expected. The hills always do. Gemma is kicking
:15:02. > :15:07.for the finish and a pretty good time. Into fifth place, 28 seconds
:15:08. > :15:11.over, and she is very happy with the horse, giving him all the credit and
:15:12. > :15:16.waving to the crowd. Make the most of it! Back with Jonelle Price and
:15:17. > :15:32.The Deputy into the Trout Hatchery. What was interesting was the way she
:15:33. > :15:39.added a stride into the lock, meaning so much control and going
:15:40. > :15:46.quick through the combination. The more control you jump this, drop in
:15:47. > :15:51.and turn at the same time. You can see she is pulling the horse round,
:15:52. > :15:52.gets the step out, and then is quite ready for the turn to the final
:15:53. > :16:06.brush corner. Again you can see that making up the
:16:07. > :16:12.time is difficult. Still a good minute and a half if not more from
:16:13. > :16:29.the finish. Penalties certain for Jakata but a question of how many.
:16:30. > :16:34.Jakata is 16 now. He has had problems and moments over the years
:16:35. > :16:37.but lovely to see him back here. So much ability and she will be
:16:38. > :16:47.delighted to have him back at this level. Gemma, well done. Look at you
:16:48. > :16:50.grinning. Amazing ride. He is a fantastic horse and so relieved to
:16:51. > :16:56.have gone round clear and with a fast time. Those are rare. Yes, very
:16:57. > :17:00.rare. He is a full thoroughbred and he eats up the ground and love that.
:17:01. > :17:14.He pulled my absolute arms out but he seems fine and I am over the
:17:15. > :17:21.moon. Piggy French with Westwood Mariner was in eighth place. She
:17:22. > :17:27.pushes for the line. 75 on Westwood Mariner and exactly the same on
:17:28. > :17:31.Jakata. Exactly the same. She will be one ahead on Jakata because he
:17:32. > :17:37.was faster. Her supporters and owners will be delighted. They have
:17:38. > :17:44.been terrific supporters of Piggy over the years. Sam Griffiths
:17:45. > :17:49.leading from Jock Paget in second place but the big guns are still to
:17:50. > :17:54.come. William Fox-Pitt, Oliver Townend, Andrew Nicholson and Aoife
:17:55. > :17:59.Clark for Ireland shortly as well. This is Jonelle Price again, the
:18:00. > :18:09.Olympic bronze medallist in the team event for New Zealand. Tremendous. I
:18:10. > :18:12.love watching her rode. -- ride. I love this horse. Because he doesn't
:18:13. > :18:16.pull and she keeps riding him all the time, it makes him quicker. This
:18:17. > :18:25.horse. Because he doesn't pull and she keeps riding him all the time,
:18:26. > :18:29.it makes him quicker. . The strong ones, you waste time setting them up
:18:30. > :18:35.for the fences. This one is back in a rhythm. Jonelle Price inside the
:18:36. > :18:42.time but not by much relatively speaking. A chance of getting into
:18:43. > :18:49.the mix. I agree with you. I don't think we are going to see anybody in
:18:50. > :19:03.the time. We have been putting money on people being inside time but they
:19:04. > :19:07.will be losing their pennies. Aoife Clark on Vaguely North. Based in
:19:08. > :19:13.Chipping Norton these days. This pairing seventh on the dressage. A
:19:14. > :19:23.bit hesitant. That was not a perfect start. It was either going to be a
:19:24. > :19:27.stand-off or an extra one and she went for the extra one. She is a
:19:28. > :19:30.lovely person and great competitor but it is the first time at
:19:31. > :19:43.Burghley. She has been round Badminton and on the Irish team.
:19:44. > :19:48.Tight. This is very brave, to jump that straight having nearly fallen
:19:49. > :19:52.over. 90% of riders would have just got up from that and if they were
:19:53. > :19:57.still in it, they would have pulled left and gone them away, but he
:19:58. > :20:02.obviously thought the horse was OK. She gave it time to recover and then
:20:03. > :20:10.said, come on, let's go. A little bit wild but they are intact. She
:20:11. > :20:21.needs to settle down and get things smoother. Jonelle Price heading to
:20:22. > :20:29.the cuttings. An extra couple of strides preferred. Aoife Clark
:20:30. > :20:39.coming down to the Trout Hatchery. Give the horse time, don't rush.
:20:40. > :20:49.That wasn't bad at all. A lot smoother than Discovery Valley.
:20:50. > :21:00.The Deputy into The Lion bridge. Huge crowds by the water and near
:21:01. > :21:06.the bridge. About a minute from home here. Aoife Clark looking at the
:21:07. > :21:15.clock as she comes to the halfway point. What she is doing is what we
:21:16. > :21:17.are seeing, half a minute over. A little tap on the shoulder to say,
:21:18. > :21:37.come on, focus. That is a two stride. We saw Matilda
:21:38. > :21:43.going on through. But Vaguely North was two and a half and said he can't
:21:44. > :21:47.do it. Disappointing for Aoife Clark but it has slightly been heading
:21:48. > :21:55.that way as we watched the horse going round here. A bit fractious as
:21:56. > :21:59.times. She almost aimed the horse at the highest part trying to make the
:22:00. > :22:06.turn and the horse said no, can't do that. She is out of the competition.
:22:07. > :22:11.Two penalties. She is but she is clearly very gutsy. She trained with
:22:12. > :22:15.you for a while. Yes, when she left school, she stayed with us for a
:22:16. > :22:23.while. She is a super person and true competitor. Vaguely North, he
:22:24. > :22:29.has been off the radar despite sharing good form three years ago.
:22:30. > :22:36.Had a bit of a problem with injury, which sometimes happens. He has got
:22:37. > :22:45.the ability but maybe a bit ring rusty and feeling under pressure.
:22:46. > :22:48.The Deputy and Jonelle Price were fifth last year and that round puts
:22:49. > :23:00.them in eighth place with some big guns to come. Satisfactory? Yes, she
:23:01. > :23:05.is in cracking form at the moment. Aoife Clark and this massive ditch,
:23:06. > :23:09.which you don't want to stand and look down on for too long. You want
:23:10. > :23:15.to jump it at speed and get it out of the way. William Fox-Pitt, six
:23:16. > :23:24.times a winner here, starts his round on Bay My Hero. The pairing
:23:25. > :23:31.won in Kentucky earlier this year. Went clear in the time there. And
:23:32. > :23:34.onto show-jumping. The only penalties were picked up in the
:23:35. > :23:47.dressage. A lovely horse and a real winner. Trained at Tattersall's in
:23:48. > :23:56.Ireland. He won the one star, the to star and then the three star and now
:23:57. > :23:59.he is winning at 4-star level. One of the favourites at Burghley.
:24:00. > :24:06.Currently in second place after the dressage. He just clipped the rail.
:24:07. > :24:09.Another to turn inside, a bit shy. The horse got a bit close and gave
:24:10. > :24:16.it a thump but hopefully that will waken up the horse and rider.
:24:17. > :24:31.Another tremendous World Equestrian Games Fort -- for William. So
:24:32. > :24:38.competitive. Such a great rider. And so cool. I never see him flustered
:24:39. > :24:41.and his horses are never flustered. Our own temperaments show up on the
:24:42. > :24:57.horses as well. Steady! Yikes! That is a painful
:24:58. > :25:02.one. Just a little bit brave coming down the hill. She had seen her
:25:03. > :25:09.stride from a long way out and that is not the right kind of fence to do
:25:10. > :25:13.that. And she hits the ground hard. Fortunately the horse gets up and so
:25:14. > :25:18.does she. This is a brilliant place for people to watch because they can
:25:19. > :25:22.sit on the bank and they get two chances to see them go through
:25:23. > :25:27.Discovery Valley. William coming back through it now.
:25:28. > :25:29.Discovery Valley. William coming still leading. But a fast, clear
:25:30. > :25:37.round from William could see him into the lead. Clare Balding is
:25:38. > :25:43.enjoying all the excitement of William's round. And now another big
:25:44. > :25:47.contender, Oliver Townend on Armada. 12th place after the
:25:48. > :25:56.dressage and Armada renowned as a good cross-country course. Yes, a
:25:57. > :26:07.very good horse. Oliver has had him now for a few years. He is no
:26:08. > :26:13.stranger to the winners' enclosure. He did not have a great ride last
:26:14. > :26:17.week in the World Championships. The ground was pretty horrendous and his
:26:18. > :26:23.horse hated it so he quite rightly pulled up and decided to save the
:26:24. > :26:32.horse for another day. Armada is a serious cross-country horse and
:26:33. > :26:39.competitor. Silly run out at the Dairy Mound, so a lot to prove this
:26:40. > :26:46.time. Fox-Pitt and Bay My Hero coming into the Trout Hatchery.
:26:47. > :26:57.Good turn. That is as quick as any we have seen. Not flustered, as I
:26:58. > :27:10.mentioned, just positive and effortless. Good credentials,
:27:11. > :27:16.Townend. The Dairy Mound caught them out last year. Massive stride, this
:27:17. > :27:24.horse, and sometimes that can be the undoing of horses when they need to
:27:25. > :27:29.be neat and nimble. Bay My Hero 24 seconds over. One of the quick ones
:27:30. > :27:37.that still behind the clock. Quite a lot of climbing up the hill to do.
:27:38. > :27:45.Another one to chip in a third stride. The honesty of the horse was
:27:46. > :27:52.brilliant. He never thought anything other than I am going between those
:27:53. > :27:57.flags. Avebury and Andrew Nicholson. A great ten minutes here will take
:27:58. > :28:00.them closer to history. Burghley history in the making. No
:28:01. > :28:07.combination has won three years running. Avebury on his way. A
:28:08. > :28:12.smashing horse and we will see much more of him shortly. Back to William
:28:13. > :28:17.Fox-Pitt and the Dairy Farm. Hopefully not giving his wife Alice
:28:18. > :28:26.too many anxious moments. She is due any moment with their fourth child.
:28:27. > :28:32.He took the quick route and got away with it. A bit hairy. Alice is
:28:33. > :28:42.probably sitting at home, waiting for the inevitable. Now Armada and
:28:43. > :28:49.Oliver Townend. Fox-Pitt did it really well. He is adding that
:28:50. > :28:59.stride. He left a legates macro quick recovery from Oliver. -- he
:29:00. > :29:07.left a leg! Despite that mishap, a quick turn back out so has not
:29:08. > :29:11.wasted a lot of time. That left front leg is completely left behind
:29:12. > :29:14.and the horse does a brilliant job to recover and Oliver's reactions
:29:15. > :29:27.are spectacular. Quick and effective. Armada got into the
:29:28. > :29:31.difficulty by leaving a leg that helps the rider out. Just a puff of
:29:32. > :29:36.the cheeks from Andrew Nicholson. Into the arena and the slalom
:29:37. > :29:42.fences. Some have glided round and some have found it a real problem.
:29:43. > :29:47.He has decided to go longer. He has not altered the rhythm so he has not
:29:48. > :29:51.wasted any time. Sometimes trying to do the tight line, you waste time by
:29:52. > :29:58.shortening the horse and setting it up more. You add more strides.
:29:59. > :30:05.Andrew just get a lovely, balanced flow and did not waste any time. A
:30:06. > :30:11.fantastic course and they would not have achieved what they have done
:30:12. > :30:15.together otherwise. -- fantastic horse. If you have never seen a brew
:30:16. > :30:26.before, you are probably getting the message about how effective he is.
:30:27. > :30:35.-- Avebury. All welcome at Burghley. Never seen so many dogs in my life.
:30:36. > :30:39.It would be great for Andrew to pull off the hat-trick and for me
:30:40. > :30:46.particularly it would be a great achievement for Wraysbury, the owner
:30:47. > :30:50.of the horse, who has done so much for British eventing. If anybody
:30:51. > :30:59.deserves a horse to pull of this historic feat, then she does. I
:31:00. > :31:05.wonder what sort of a watcher she is? Presumably behind the tent
:31:06. > :31:11.somewhere. She doesn't smoke, but if she had, she would be at now.
:31:12. > :31:16.As good as any, quick, effective and wasted not a second getting back
:31:17. > :31:22.into the rhythm. Oliver Townend then, what is the clock going to say
:31:23. > :31:26.about him? Competitive, I'd say. Yes, very, very. We know this horse
:31:27. > :31:31.has the gallop. He has the big stride, so he could be one that, as
:31:32. > :31:35.long as he is not running out of juice, which I doubt that he will
:31:36. > :31:43.be, he would be one that could make up a the bit of time back down the
:31:44. > :31:47.hill. Beautiful Burghley House in the background. A nice turn. Never
:31:48. > :31:57.in any doubt about where he was going. William Fox Pitt initially
:31:58. > :32:05.held by I have aia Clark's fall -- Aoife. That was interesting, It is
:32:06. > :32:10.not easy to be stopped at the course and particularly to come to the wide
:32:11. > :32:14.oxer for your first jump. William got off the horse and led it around
:32:15. > :32:17.for a minute or two, so the horse was a little bit, probably, cooled
:32:18. > :32:21.down and, that, there, jumping into the water was a little bit sticky.
:32:22. > :32:26.That's probably the effect of having been held on the course. He jumped
:32:27. > :32:30.the Oxer beautifully but the horse is probably just a little bit
:32:31. > :32:33.surprised about being stopped and started on the course. He looked a
:32:34. > :32:37.little bit green going into the water but again, William, ever the
:32:38. > :32:44.competitor, is back into the rhythm fairly quickly. I just hope he
:32:45. > :32:48.doesn't lose too much ground. He would have been chuffed with his
:32:49. > :32:52.position after the dressage. But the clock is going to be very, very
:32:53. > :32:57.important here. Of it could just be that he just loses ground on a few
:32:58. > :33:02.here. Yes, sometimes when you are held, the horse gets a bit of a
:33:03. > :33:06.breather, sometimes it can actually switch off. You never quite know,
:33:07. > :33:16.until you are in that situation, how it is going to affect them.
:33:17. > :33:30.That was quick. Spectacular. Mr Nicholson is in form. Being well but
:33:31. > :33:37.now William Fox-Pitt at the last. Penalties racking up. Slowly sure by
:33:38. > :33:40.he crosses the line. 16.03. Puts him 11 penalty points off the lead and
:33:41. > :33:45.in fourth Yeah, a little bit slow for which will yachl. He will be --
:33:46. > :33:49.for William. He will be happy with the horse. Now Andrew Nicholson
:33:50. > :33:55.almost has the stage to himself on Avebury. Oliver Townend still out
:33:56. > :34:02.there with armada. -- Armada. Here Avebury at the Maltings. You are so
:34:03. > :34:07.right, that discovery valley and the Trout Hatchery, almost textbook.
:34:08. > :34:12.Yes, a masterclass in riding cross country we are seeing at the moment.
:34:13. > :34:18.Let's hope I'm not putting the commentator's curse on him but he
:34:19. > :34:26.looks so impressive. Andrew, kicking away from that fence saying - come
:34:27. > :34:30.on Avebury, we are not done yet. Avebury on his way, then, what a
:34:31. > :34:34.fantastic slice of history it would be if he could pull it off. But
:34:35. > :34:39.still, so much more to be done and now the clock, quick, quick, and is
:34:40. > :34:44.that a smile? Almost as if Nicholson saw the clock himself? A smile or a
:34:45. > :34:49.grimace. Certainly licking his lips there. Maybe he is tasting success.
:34:50. > :34:55.But that's the fastest we have seen on the clock to that point on the
:34:56. > :34:59.course. If Avebury has the energy, Andrew has the determination. Are
:35:00. > :35:04.you expecting his stamina to hold out all right? Yes, I do. No-one
:35:05. > :35:10.will be better at getting a horse fit enough than Andrew and the horse
:35:11. > :35:14.is known to run on well. He got a bit tired at Kentucky earlier this
:35:15. > :35:18.year but there was some question mark as to whether he had a bug or
:35:19. > :35:24.virus on him. That would be the exception rather than the rule. The
:35:25. > :35:32.horse normally runs on right to the end and, he is a really, honest,
:35:33. > :35:37.generous horse, and just keeps giving. I knew Andrew was going for
:35:38. > :35:51.the steps. He said it was a no-brainer, that was the way he was
:35:52. > :35:57.going. CLARE That looked hard work. Well, I'm delighted with him. That
:35:58. > :36:01.was hard work. You can make up the time at the end down the Winner's
:36:02. > :36:05.Avenue, he couldn't because he was going deep. He tried. He did his
:36:06. > :36:12.best. I'm delighted with him. Oliver Townend, then. Now, this time
:36:13. > :36:21.looks pretty solid as well as he comes down towards Stamford Station.
:36:22. > :36:28.Tremendous leap from him. He has a lot of scope when he is on song. We
:36:29. > :36:32.are seeing some of the best of him here. Yes, he has a phenomenal jump.
:36:33. > :36:37.It was interesting what William was saying, the horses were being in
:36:38. > :36:41.Winners' skaep avenue, the ground was thicker than we expected. That's
:36:42. > :36:45.the point on the course we expect horses to make up time. Once they
:36:46. > :36:49.have got to the top of the hill, they get a second win and run all
:36:50. > :36:50.down. If the ground was sticky, thats' possibly -- that's possibly
:36:51. > :36:53.part of the reason thats' possibly -- that's possibly
:36:54. > :36:59.getting anyone here the time and that, along with a slow beginning,
:37:00. > :37:04.butI have certainly doing his utmost here to get to that time. -- but
:37:05. > :37:10.Oliver certainly doing his utmost here to get to the time. He is not
:37:11. > :37:13.going to do it but he will be one of the quicker ones. He is going well.
:37:14. > :37:21.Inside the last minute for Oliver Townend. Here is Avebury again at
:37:22. > :37:32.the cots more leap. So far -- Cottesmore.
:37:33. > :37:38.I hope he -- -- the owner keeps hold of that dog. Oliver squeezes him
:37:39. > :37:41.into the line. He is not slow by much and goes into second place
:37:42. > :37:50.there, behind Sam Griffiths and ahead of Jock Paget. Big smile on
:37:51. > :38:05.Oliver's face. And that would be great for Oliver, he'll love that.
:38:06. > :38:11.And now, it is all about Avebury. Of Capability's Cuttings. So far
:38:12. > :38:14.Avebury has been terrific. And brilliant through that Capability's
:38:15. > :38:19.Cutting there. He took the quick route. The footwork of the horse at
:38:20. > :38:25.the top of the bank, almost a half stride a trot step to put himself
:38:26. > :38:31.right and flies that big wide oxer. He is still full of rung. He has his
:38:32. > :38:35.ears pricked, still going forward. Big jump into the water. A lovely
:38:36. > :38:37.picture. When the horse has its ears pricked
:38:38. > :38:43.picture. When the horse has its ears it is great to behold. It is a
:38:44. > :38:47.brilliant watch. I hope you are enjoying t the Lincolnshire Goose
:38:48. > :38:54.brilliant watch. I hope you are hasn't caused many problems at all.
:38:55. > :39:00.I know a few of the riders don't like it. Over the years it has put a
:39:01. > :39:04.few on the deck but I don't think it has been a problem this year. This
:39:05. > :39:08.horse is still full of running. Yes, it is good. And Andrew has seen his
:39:09. > :39:13.spot from quite a long way out there. He is accelerating, gritting
:39:14. > :39:18.his teeth. Getting at everything and Avebury is coming up with the
:39:19. > :39:24.answers. Second last. He is going to pick up penalties but not very many.
:39:25. > :39:30.He has, of course, the score of Sam Griffiths in his mind, 49.8 is
:39:31. > :39:34.Griffiths' lead marker. Final fence for Nicholson, a tap with the whip,
:39:35. > :39:44.Avebury responds gallantly. He is across the line. He goes into first
:39:45. > :39:49.place, a tremendous round. Avebury, a step closer to history. Fantastic.
:39:50. > :39:56.Could not be better. Classic ride from Mr Nicholson. CLARE BALDING: We
:39:57. > :40:00.talked earlier about how Avebury could be the perfect Burghley
:40:01. > :40:03.course. He saw it. He had to keep going. He has come up with the
:40:04. > :40:06.fastest cross country clear round of the day. Last to go out there.
:40:07. > :40:10.Brilliant riding from Andrew Nicholson. The horse just loved it.
:40:11. > :40:17.It suits him so well. They go into the lead ahead of the show jumping.
:40:18. > :40:20.Of the 63 horse who is started, 42 completed the cross country but
:40:21. > :40:26.sadly Auto, who didn't was fatally injured. Our condolences to his
:40:27. > :40:31.rider and the owners. Andrew Nicholson out in front. Two good
:40:32. > :40:36.rides from Piggy French in 12 and 13 but let's get the reaction from our
:40:37. > :40:40.leader. How much would it mean to you to be the first combination,
:40:41. > :40:44.ever to win Burghley three times? It would be immense, wouldn't it? Just
:40:45. > :40:51.for the horse, as well. For a horse to do that, is quite something. You
:40:52. > :40:56.know He has been a favourite in the yard and, I think we would be very,
:40:57. > :41:01.very proud of him. I'm proud of him anyway. But to win three four stars
:41:02. > :41:05.in the same place. So we come to the final day of competition, the sun
:41:06. > :41:10.has come out for the show-jumping we have a tight, twisty, turny course,
:41:11. > :41:14.we could see lots of mistakes. It is four penalty points for a knockdown.
:41:15. > :41:18.The leaderboard could change but Andrew Nicholson is on to make
:41:19. > :41:22.history. Let's find out whether he does it or whether somebody from
:41:23. > :41:29.lower down the leaderboard to overtake him. Your commentary same
:41:30. > :41:34.is Ian Stark and John hunt. Jonelle price, first, on board The
:41:35. > :41:42.Deputy, a top ten finisher, a couple of years ago. It is worth reminding
:41:43. > :41:46.you, as the drama builds, that Jakata has been withdrawn, Piggy
:41:47. > :41:49.French's horse who was laying in that position and also,
:41:50. > :41:54.significantly withdrawn, Harbour Pilot who was in 7th. So now we are
:41:55. > :41:59.looking at the current 10th place horse, the Deputy, carrying
:42:00. > :42:03.penalties of 71. 1 into this show jumping round.
:42:04. > :42:13.Jonelle, as we said had a brilliant week last week at the World
:42:14. > :42:20.Championships. Classic Moet had one show jump down which actually cost
:42:21. > :42:26.her the bronze medal individually. This course of Richard Jeffrey's
:42:27. > :42:30.here, technically difficult. The first three are ascending, not too
:42:31. > :42:33.bad and suddenly to the line, four, five and six, four strides and then
:42:34. > :42:41.five strides. Quite a formidable line. The first and third element of
:42:42. > :42:50.that line are both square. It is all the way downhill in this arena which
:42:51. > :42:56.tends to look flat but is actually quite a lot of ups and downs and
:42:57. > :43:01.bumps in the course. And this crucial line here - do they go for
:43:02. > :43:06.stride left or do they add? She is down the hill. She has hit a few but
:43:07. > :43:10.still standing and fine for time by my calculations. It is interesting.
:43:11. > :43:15.Some horses can hit every fence and get away and others tap one and it
:43:16. > :43:19.comes down. It is all about how they hit them and how hard they hit them.
:43:20. > :43:23.The right turn now into the second last. She arrives here with ten
:43:24. > :43:26.seconds on the clock. She should be fine. She's done exactly that. Now
:43:27. > :43:34.the final fence. A double combination. You can hear the cheer
:43:35. > :43:41.for yourself there, Jonelle Price is clear. So, that's a tremendous
:43:42. > :43:48.result. She will carry forward her final score, 71.1. There are plenty
:43:49. > :43:58.in front of her, including William Fox Pitt who could yet fall behind
:43:59. > :44:02.here. -- behind her. In 9th place, Under The Clocks, and is the
:44:03. > :44:07.Australian, Murray Lamperd is the rider here. The arena here at
:44:08. > :44:12.Burghley under lovely blue skies, and it falls silent once again.
:44:13. > :44:15.These riders, presumably Ian, will be full of confidence that the time
:44:16. > :44:19.shouldn't be a factor. Going clear is the issue. Worth reminding people
:44:20. > :44:24.that last year, not one of the top ten went clear. Not one. No, there
:44:25. > :44:28.were some tired horses at the end of the cross country last year. I have
:44:29. > :44:32.to say, the horses look quite fresh today, which is a good testament to
:44:33. > :44:56.the ground conditions out there on the cross country course.
:44:57. > :45:03.That's a shame. One down, the first one down.
:45:04. > :45:10.Very few clear rounds on the three day event in the show jumping. That
:45:11. > :45:14.is because it has been a long, strenuous day in the cross country
:45:15. > :45:18.before. Four miles of galloping up and down hill and over these solid
:45:19. > :45:21.fences. They do feel a bit different, the horses when they come
:45:22. > :45:26.into this phase. So horse that is would normally show jump clear day
:45:27. > :45:35.after day, are not always quite so careful at this three-day event.
:45:36. > :45:42.Young Harry Zennies had a few down -- Harry Dzenis had a few down.
:45:43. > :45:44.Emotionally and mentally it can be quite tiring and also there are
:45:45. > :45:48.Emotionally and mentally it can be crowds and that can have an effect
:45:49. > :45:52.on horse that is are not used to it. The conclusion of Murray Lamperd's
:45:53. > :45:59.round. Might get a time penal ti. He does. A couple of them. He should be
:46:00. > :46:04.pleased with his two jumps down, to 79:.
:46:05. > :46:07.So clearly, Jonelle Price for New Zealand jumps ahead of him in the
:46:08. > :46:22.order. Starting in eighth place. Bill
:46:23. > :46:27.Levett for Australia on Improvise. 69. Had is the score they carry into
:46:28. > :46:31.Levett for Australia on Improvise. their show jumping round. Improvise
:46:32. > :46:37.was, let's just say, unusual to watch - unconventional, around his
:46:38. > :46:40.cross country yesterday. Certainly enthusiastic. He was 9th in the four
:46:41. > :47:01.snar Germany earlier this year. I have to say, he was keen yesterday
:47:02. > :47:11.but his jumping never deteriorated. He is one of the quickest so far to
:47:12. > :47:15.this point as well. The clock shouldn't be a factor for him. What
:47:16. > :47:18.we were saying about horses being a little more tired on the final day
:47:19. > :47:21.of a three-day event. I don't think the time should be too demanding but
:47:22. > :47:24.this horse doesn't look the time should be too demanding but
:47:25. > :47:31.done anything yesterday. It is full of running. Jumping well. Bill
:47:32. > :47:32.Levett's round reaching its conclusion here. Again, very, very
:47:33. > :48:03.neat. Three to jump. He loved that, didn't he? A lovely
:48:04. > :48:09.clear round, comfortably within the time. And Bill Levett 69.59. He
:48:10. > :48:14.carries his score forward and he, currently, with seven to go, in
:48:15. > :48:17.first place. It will be a minor miracle if he were to win it, not
:48:18. > :48:22.going to happen, is it, Ian? Probably not but it could well see
:48:23. > :48:26.him moving up the order quite a bit. The pressure gets greater and
:48:27. > :48:28.greater as we move up the order to the ones in the lead. A clear round
:48:29. > :48:44.is always a big positive. For Great Britain, Gemma Tattersall.
:48:45. > :48:59.Arctic Soul. 7th place at the start of the show jumping element. 64.2 is
:49:00. > :49:06.her penalty score, carried forward. This is the one from cross country,
:49:07. > :49:12.you will probably remember, thoroughbred, bred. Her sire was
:49:13. > :49:15.fabulous. A flat racehorse, not a jumper, I should point out. It is
:49:16. > :49:20.quite interesting because most of the horses that get to the top of
:49:21. > :49:32.eventing have come off the flat, not off the jumping breeding.
:49:33. > :49:38.Once they have jumped over brush fences in steeple chase, the
:49:39. > :49:42.technique changes and they are not always quite as careful in this
:49:43. > :49:47.phase but the flat bred horses are so much more physically stronger and
:49:48. > :49:53.more power envelope their back hand they seem to cope. Gemma seemed to
:49:54. > :50:03.clout the fourth, but it was secure. Her time is fine as well.
:50:04. > :50:10.. She is looking, dare I say t quite confident, at the moment. -- dare I
:50:11. > :50:25.say it. Going nicely, then for Gemma
:50:26. > :50:27.Tattersall. Three to jump. Time is not an issue, she is fine there.
:50:28. > :50:40.Absolutely fine. She gave that last one a kick but
:50:41. > :50:48.she gives the punch in the air. Happy she can be, with her week's
:50:49. > :50:49.work. With six to g she's the leader in the clubhouse.
:50:50. > :51:17.-- with six to go. And now, the great William Fox-Pitt,
:51:18. > :51:21.six times a winner at Burghley. An eventing legend, just about
:51:22. > :51:28.everybody here in this arena will be willing him on here. The mathematics
:51:29. > :51:35.suggests he requires a massive amount here to go his way. He is on
:51:36. > :51:42.60.3 penalties. Remember, the leader Avebury on 46.1. So he is a fair way
:51:43. > :51:47.off. This horse jumped well, when winning in Kentucky. Yes, he is a
:51:48. > :51:51.pretty good jumper, normally. But these hills at Burghley can take the
:51:52. > :52:04.stuffing out of horses sometimes, especially if they are not used
:52:05. > :52:15.If William goes clear, he would -- -- if they are not used to it. If
:52:16. > :52:21.William goes clear, it would need Avebury to have four. It is a tough
:52:22. > :52:27.order. It is. And much as I would wish William to go well I wouldn't
:52:28. > :52:31.want to see anybody have four down. Still a young horse. I think because
:52:32. > :52:35.he has won so much in his career already, expectations are very high
:52:36. > :52:39.but we expect he is still relatively young. But the nice thing is, he
:52:40. > :52:50.bounced out of yesterday in good form. He looks fresh. Terrific.
:52:51. > :52:56.He picked up the gasps from the crowd there. They sensed he was
:52:57. > :53:00.wrong approaching the ninth. Yes, one or two horses going down that
:53:01. > :53:03.hill are looking at the fence a little bit. Their eyes are drawn
:53:04. > :53:06.down to the base of the fence, to the little wall on the signage. The
:53:07. > :53:27.final line. Fantastic round for him. So
:53:28. > :53:32.confident inside the time as well. He will finish Burghley on 60.3 with
:53:33. > :53:39.five to go. He is the clubhouse leader.
:53:40. > :53:44.Well, this is a different picture to last year where no-one was jumping
:53:45. > :53:51.clear. Getting quite a few clear rounds. It goes to show the horses
:53:52. > :53:57.are well after yesterday. CLARE BALDING: Gemma Tattersall. You
:53:58. > :54:02.are clearly delighted? Just a little bit. I was expecting to go in and
:54:03. > :54:08.have two down. So to jump a clear round, that was amazing. When you
:54:09. > :54:12.say expecting it? The atmosphere and the crowd. He has not jumped at a
:54:13. > :54:16.three-day for a long time. I thought he would get tense and worried. How
:54:17. > :54:21.do you control yourself inyour own emotions in that situation? Take a
:54:22. > :54:26.deep breath. Believe in myself. This is the bit I'm really good at. You
:54:27. > :54:30.are going to finish 7th or better? Amazing. Can't believe T really
:54:31. > :54:38.pleased. Over the money. -- can't believe it. Great stuff. Well ridden
:54:39. > :54:45.today and yesterday. In 5th place for Great Britain on KBIS Briarlands
:54:46. > :54:51.Matilda. She was thrilled with her, cross country-wise yesterday.
:54:52. > :54:59.Any sort of penalty here and she will fall behind William Fox-Pitt
:55:00. > :55:04.but she will be hoping to keep her nose ahead of him. We have already
:55:05. > :55:08.said how brilliant Izzy is and how well she rode yesterday. And this
:55:09. > :55:14.mare, Matilda, is very, very well she rode yesterday. And this
:55:15. > :55:21.in this phase. Anything can happen, but for me, the highlight was
:55:22. > :55:28.yesterday when there was such a good performance, cross country. And just
:55:29. > :55:34.like the cross country, there is nothing, not a bomb going off would
:55:35. > :55:36.disturb her. But the horse there, the fifth one down, four faults for
:55:37. > :55:52.her. The riders have to be so incredibly
:55:53. > :55:56.focussed in this ring because there are so many distractions of the
:55:57. > :56:01.cameras and the crowds and again, down the hill to that vertical.
:56:02. > :56:25.Another one away. Eight faults for her so far.
:56:26. > :56:37.And Izzy Taylor finishes with a flourish A couple down -- with a
:56:38. > :56:41.flourish. A couple down, 67.5. William Fox-Pitt goes ahead of her
:56:42. > :56:46.with four riders left. I'm sure there will be an element of
:56:47. > :56:53.frustration but again, a pretty decent week. I think she will be
:56:54. > :56:59.pleased with the mare and herself. She has performed well. Clare
:57:00. > :57:03.Balding. Our leader in the club house, William Fox-Pitt. Rattled a
:57:04. > :57:08.couple but they stayed up. He tried hard. Spooky and a bit over-aware of
:57:09. > :57:12.the spooky jumps. A couple of lucky moments but he has been fantastic
:57:13. > :57:19.all week. I'm really pleased with him and very excited for next season
:57:20. > :57:24.and his owner Katherine wit who owns Park Lane, who is not here what a
:57:25. > :57:28.great substitute. It maybe there is too much ground to make up but you
:57:29. > :57:32.uted president pressure on the leaders I didn't expect to make up
:57:33. > :57:36.any ground. The scores were spread out. I got the time faults
:57:37. > :57:40.yesterday. Thrilled to get home and thrilled with how he coped. It is
:57:41. > :57:47.always great to jump a clear round on the last day. I wished I had done
:57:48. > :57:51.it last week. And entering the arena Clifton Promise, last year's winner
:57:52. > :57:56.before his disqualification, of course, Jock Paget, on board.
:57:57. > :58:04.Acknowledges the crowd. In fourth place. 55.2. Avebury has two fences
:58:05. > :58:08.in hand over him. So in order to put any pressure at all, he has to go
:58:09. > :58:13.clear here. Well, he is very capable of it. He had one down last year but
:58:14. > :58:19.as we have said, very few clears - well, no clears last year in the
:58:20. > :58:30.final group of horses. But very, very capable. I think he has done a
:58:31. > :58:35.good job. A good job in coping with this competition. He had a fairly
:58:36. > :58:42.ghastly year after last year and it has only recently just been started
:58:43. > :58:44.out. -- sorted out. That's a lot of added pressure for any rider to cope
:58:45. > :59:04.with. A rattle behind there. Just getting low enough with his
:59:05. > :59:07.back legs. The time is very solid. Not looking like it will be an issue
:59:08. > :59:23.at all. This will be the one that he needs
:59:24. > :59:29.to keep the horse off it a little bit. Not flatten down the hill.
:59:30. > :59:42.Rattles t but it is fine. -- rattles it. You could hear a pin drop here.
:59:43. > :59:50.The final line. A clear frowned Jock and he will put the pressure on the
:59:51. > :59:53.rest of them. -- a clear round. The last coming up. Jock Paget.
:59:54. > :00:00.APPLAUSE Superb. He has done exactly what he
:00:01. > :00:05.had to do, comfortably clear, well within the time, 55.2, his carry
:00:06. > :00:09.forward score. He can be no worse than fourth. That now puts some
:00:10. > :00:13.pressure on Oliver Townend who will be next and Sam Griffiths and Andrew
:00:14. > :00:20.Nicholson to come, of course. Just moving a little bit more uneasy in
:00:21. > :00:34.their riding boots, as Jock Paget leaves the arena. Ask A bit
:00:35. > :00:42.frustrated? Yes, normally a good jumper. I think she is tired from
:00:43. > :00:48.yesterday. Have you watched it back yet? No, I will do it later. She
:00:49. > :00:51.thinks quickly, doesn't she? Yes, she is very sharp, so you have to be
:00:52. > :00:57.quick to react to what she does which can be great and not so great.
:00:58. > :01:12.You are going to be at the front of You be's mind for the selections. --
:01:13. > :01:20.Yogi's mind. Yes, hopefully, for the selections. Oliver Townend on Armada
:01:21. > :01:29.was great in the cross-country yesterday. A purposeful salute to
:01:30. > :01:32.the crowd. This situation here, with one-time penalty, he will be ahead
:01:33. > :01:37.of Jock Paget and anything worse than and Jock Paget moves ahead. He
:01:38. > :01:44.will still need mistakes to come from Sam Griffiths and Andrew
:01:45. > :01:47.Nicholson. It is interesting that Oliver and William Fox-Pitt have
:01:48. > :01:50.taken their horses across to look at number five, which has been causing
:01:51. > :01:53.problems throughout number five, which has been causing
:01:54. > :02:00.coming down quite a lot. The horses have been spooked. They both took
:02:01. > :02:04.their horses to have a look. It is allowed under the rules to show your
:02:05. > :02:10.horse a fence. It is the middle one of the three down the side of the
:02:11. > :02:20.arena. Oliver Townend getting under way.
:02:21. > :02:30.That fence is down. His head was just a bit too high over the first
:02:31. > :02:40.of the two fences. As soon as their head is up, the back legs drop. His
:02:41. > :02:47.chance of winning has gone. Jock Paget in pole position with two to
:02:48. > :03:00.jump. Another one away. It is getting expensive.
:03:01. > :03:18.The winner here five years ago. Oliver Townend on Armada takes the
:03:19. > :03:24.final two fences. Another one down. Yes, not the finish you wanted by
:03:25. > :03:27.any means. 71.1, showing us how quickly things can turn. He drops
:03:28. > :03:37.right out of the playthings. Jock Paget in front with two to go. Sam
:03:38. > :03:50.Griffiths and Andrew Nicholson. Sam Griffiths next. Griffiths can afford
:03:51. > :03:53.one down and will still be ahead of Jock Paget. You will be on the
:03:54. > :03:59.podium. You have moved up to third place and waiting, I guess. Yes. I
:04:00. > :04:03.don't really like being in this position but it is the position we
:04:04. > :04:07.are in. He jumped really well and I cannot do any more so I have to wait
:04:08. > :04:13.and see what happens. You have to really look after him in the
:04:14. > :04:17.cross-country. He said that yesterday. I just mean I didn't want
:04:18. > :04:21.him to slip over because he was going too fast round the corners. He
:04:22. > :04:26.wanted to do the job, jump the jumps and be fast. The course at the
:04:27. > :04:33.beginning did not suit him as much as I would have liked. A bit rusty.
:04:34. > :04:37.But he gives me everything and that is all I can ask for. You are in
:04:38. > :04:45.third and it could get better. We will wait and see. Such a popular
:04:46. > :04:49.rider. Sam Griffiths on Happy Times. Happy Times has been on the fringe
:04:50. > :04:55.of this event as a horse three times. Great horse and great
:04:56. > :05:01.combination. I have seen some brilliant clear rounds but I have
:05:02. > :05:19.also seen him having two or three down. What sort of frame of mind is
:05:20. > :05:23.in today? -- is he. Two down and Jock Paget would go ahead of him.
:05:24. > :05:30.Clear here would stack the pressure on Avebury. They would then need to
:05:31. > :05:35.go clear to make history. Great stuff.
:05:36. > :06:36.Swinging to the second last. The time penalty will not be an issue
:06:37. > :06:47.but that fence down could be so costly. Last fence. The very last!
:06:48. > :06:52.Down as well. A final score of 57.8. Jock Paget is still in front.
:06:53. > :07:02.Avebury now has a massive, massive chance to make history. That was a
:07:03. > :07:05.serious disappointment and in the last one down at the very end. So
:07:06. > :07:21.frustrating. The pressure is now on. Andrew Nicholson and Avebury then,
:07:22. > :07:25.attempting to make history. No horse and rider combination has ever won
:07:26. > :07:33.Burghley three years running. On 46.1. Jock Paget and 55.2 is his
:07:34. > :07:42.target. Two fences down and he would still be fine. He can afford two so
:07:43. > :07:47.what is his mentality? To go clear! Who would know what is going through
:07:48. > :07:52.someone's mind under this sort of pressure? It is the position we all
:07:53. > :07:57.want to be in, to be in the lead on that final day, but the pressure is
:07:58. > :08:09.enormous. Thousands of people and that arena is such a lonely place.
:08:10. > :08:15.Most people that I spoke to in the press room were convinced he would
:08:16. > :08:22.get at least one down and possibly more. Can he prove them wrong?
:08:23. > :08:30.He is trying to prove everybody wrong. Now the tricky
:08:31. > :08:33.He is trying to prove everybody and he sails over it. Bang on the
:08:34. > :08:57.time. From our vantage point I can see
:08:58. > :09:01.Rosemary, the owner of the horse, watching this round, jumping every
:09:02. > :09:06.fence with the horse. He got away with that. People are watching
:09:07. > :09:13.through their hands in front of us. Is this history in the making? Only
:09:14. > :09:22.three left to jump. He can afford to get two down. He is clear. Two to
:09:23. > :09:30.jump. And Avebury, with the clock ticking down... Is safe over that
:09:31. > :09:35.second last! Surely but surely? It is a slice of Burghley history for
:09:36. > :09:41.the great Andrew Nicholson and the equally great Avebury! He has won
:09:42. > :09:45.Burghley again for the third time! The first combination to ever do
:09:46. > :09:52.that consecutively. A wonderful moment in eventing history. That is
:09:53. > :10:00.fantastic. Even Andrew is saluting the crowd. We see Avebury jump that
:10:01. > :10:14.final combination again. Rose Mary is on the left -- Rosemary. And his
:10:15. > :10:17.wife. A tremendous moment for Andrew Nicholson. Yesterday he delighted
:10:18. > :10:21.with a cross-country round to take him into pole position that he
:10:22. > :10:34.accomplished the task with such class. She is getting picked up and
:10:35. > :10:40.is a bit surprised! Getting a kiss. Huge celebrations because this is
:10:41. > :10:45.history. The fifth time that he has won Burghley but the third in a row
:10:46. > :10:50.and Avebury becomes the first horse ever to do that. Congratulations all
:10:51. > :10:57.round. Fabulous stuff. They are celebrating. Well done. I am going
:10:58. > :11:01.to cry in a minute. It is unbelievable. For the horse it is
:11:02. > :11:07.amazing and for the sport. It has a big following now. To win here three
:11:08. > :11:12.years in a row is unbelievable. He rattled nearly every fence but left
:11:13. > :11:16.them up. I learned a long time ago they can touch them as much as they
:11:17. > :11:20.want so long as they don't fall down. You contain your emotions very
:11:21. > :11:27.well, but looking at this around you and how much it means to people,
:11:28. > :11:33.this matters. It is key. Kevin, Annabel, the vet, the grooms,
:11:34. > :11:40.everyone. To have a horse 14 years old that has been here as many times
:11:41. > :11:48.times, it is a big team. I have got to have won three times, it is a big
:11:49. > :11:54.team. I have got the a word with Rosemary because she has been so
:11:55. > :11:59.strong in British eventing but today she is supporting New Zealand. This
:12:00. > :12:02.is your horse. Well done. Absolutely amazing and Andrew did it in true
:12:03. > :12:10.style from beginning to end. He came here when he was very young. Only
:12:11. > :12:14.about eight or nine? No, he was ten. And he has been back every year
:12:15. > :12:23.since and look what he has done in the last three. I really can't
:12:24. > :12:26.believe it! It is too emotional. Andrew Nicholson wins again,
:12:27. > :12:31.comfortably clear in the end from Jock Paget and Clifton promised in
:12:32. > :12:36.second, and Sam Griffiths who had such high hopes in third place, and
:12:37. > :12:40.William Fox-Pitt and Gemma Tattersall for Great Britain in
:12:41. > :12:45.fourth and fifth. The Australian Bill Levett in sixth, Izzy Taylor
:12:46. > :12:45.seventh. The day ends in disappointment for Oliver Townend
:12:46. > :12:50.who must have had hopes for winning himself, finishing eighth after a
:12:51. > :12:57.disappointing cross-country round with Armada. Jonelle Price and
:12:58. > :13:02.Murray Lamperd ninth and 10th. Andrew Nicholson the clear-cut
:13:03. > :13:09.winner of Burghley 2014. Andrew Nicholson is 53 years old now. He
:13:10. > :13:13.came here 31 years ago and he has completed barely more times than any
:13:14. > :13:18.other writer, but this is the highlight of everything he has
:13:19. > :13:24.achieved. -- he has completed Burghley than any other rider. He
:13:25. > :13:28.becomes the first in history to win the title three years in a row.
:13:29. > :13:35.They're wonderful moment for Andrew Nicholson and as he took his lap of
:13:36. > :13:38.honour, the crowd stood as one to support their wonderful horse and
:13:39. > :13:42.rider and a supreme partnership because they have to do it
:13:43. > :13:47.together. We asked if he is the supreme eventer and he is at
:13:48. > :13:50.Burghley. This completes the Classics and there is a prize for
:13:51. > :13:57.the most consistent rider across six of the highest class events and
:13:58. > :14:01.William Fox-Pitt takes home a cheque for $40,000 having won in Kentucky
:14:02. > :14:04.and finishing fourth here, sealing the title ahead of Sam Griffiths and
:14:05. > :14:11.Oliver Townend with Andrew Nicholson in fourth. We are still enjoying the
:14:12. > :14:15.evening sunshine at Burghley. Ben is alongside me. We promised that we
:14:16. > :14:18.would be heading to Normandy for the conclusion of the individual
:14:19. > :14:25.show-jumping and it is such an interesting format. Explain what
:14:26. > :14:27.happens with the final four riders. Probably the only competition in
:14:28. > :14:32.show-jumping where the final four start on a clean sheet on the last
:14:33. > :14:36.day and get to ride each other's horses. The warm up is done in front
:14:37. > :14:43.of the huge stadium there so the crowd get to see the changeover, the
:14:44. > :14:50.competition. A great final finish. Four very worthy finalists and all
:14:51. > :15:02.previous individual medal winners. Yes, finalists from America and
:15:03. > :15:08.France. And Patrice Delaveau will get a huge home cheer. It is an
:15:09. > :15:11.incredible stadium, isn't it? Yes, I went to watch my team-mates earlier
:15:12. > :15:15.in the week and I stayed for the rest of the week and came back last
:15:16. > :15:21.night and the stadium was packed. Totally full. You felt like you were
:15:22. > :15:24.in a football match. The horses rose to the occasion and it has been
:15:25. > :15:31.great jumping this week, just proving that show-jumping is a great
:15:32. > :15:34.sport to be involved in. Normally equestrian sport is about the
:15:35. > :15:38.partnership but this is a test of horsemanship because you are
:15:39. > :15:43.switching to everybody else's. Is it an advantage to have a difficult
:15:44. > :15:47.horse that nobody can ride? Absolutely. Some difficult horses in
:15:48. > :15:57.the bunch. They are great writers use to different horses but there
:15:58. > :16:01.will be tactics. -- great riders used to different horses. They will
:16:02. > :16:06.be watching clips on YouTube. A tactical finish and a dramatic end
:16:07. > :16:11.to a great week. With all the details and the action, let's get
:16:12. > :16:13.commentary on the conclusion to the individual medals being decided at
:16:14. > :16:23.the World Equestrian Games in show-jumping.
:16:24. > :16:29.Jarrow and double damn, first to go, 42 and from the Netherlands. --
:16:30. > :16:42.Jarrow in double damn -- Jeroen 42 and from the Netherlands. --
:16:43. > :16:48.Dubbeldam. By the standards of the last couple of days, this is an
:16:49. > :16:53.easier course. Normally they travel at 400 metres per minute, but
:16:54. > :16:58.theoretically all the first four on their own horses, you would expect
:16:59. > :17:06.them to go clear, but as we know anything can happen in show-jumping.
:17:07. > :17:13.Moving on to a sweeping turn. This is a big fence and I would say that
:17:14. > :17:21.the course is plenty big enough considering they have got to jump it
:17:22. > :17:29.four times. Let's look at the distance. Either six or seven. Easy
:17:30. > :17:34.six. Certainly gets the start he would have wanted. Clear jumping
:17:35. > :17:55.inside the time, just. This is the job done. Each rider
:17:56. > :17:59.will be extremely disappointed if they don't go clear on their own
:18:00. > :18:06.horses. Zenith jumped immaculately all the way round. Jeroen Dubbeldam
:18:07. > :18:07.is under pressure that he has handled it before and he is an
:18:08. > :18:23.Olympic gold medallist. Very much at the start wanted by
:18:24. > :18:34.Jeroen Dubbeldam. Clear and in the bag for the Netherlands. But a long
:18:35. > :18:53.way to go. Rolf-Goran Bengtsson riding Purcell -- Casall Ask for
:18:54. > :18:55.Sweden. A big jumper. This man was very successful for a couple of
:18:56. > :19:05.years and without doubt one of the world's very best. Casall Ask is now
:19:06. > :19:12.15, so getting towards the end of his career and by far the oldest
:19:13. > :19:19.horse. Oh! That really is a big surprise. I got the impression with
:19:20. > :19:22.the last round that this horse jumped, to get into the final, he
:19:23. > :19:26.had his only fence down that he jumped, to get into the final, he
:19:27. > :19:39.had at the competition. Is the 15-year-old tiring ?
:19:40. > :19:53.How crucial is that one fence for the man from Sweden, Rolf-Goran
:19:54. > :20:00.Bengtsson? Just coming out of the combination. Little touch on it, did
:20:01. > :20:09.not really spring of the floor. Such a disappointment to get a fence on
:20:10. > :20:14.your own horse. Very often there is one horse in the field that proves
:20:15. > :20:29.difficult and he could be. Ross current banks and can certainly ride
:20:30. > :20:45.the rest -- Rolf-Goran. The twice Olympic team gold medallist in 2004
:20:46. > :20:52.and 2008. Beezie Madden putting in a bid for the fence that she lost in
:20:53. > :21:06.2006. Could this be a chance to put it right? Very much in the American
:21:07. > :21:21.mould, lets the horse run, sticking his head out. Very rangy horse.
:21:22. > :21:25.Jeroen Dubbeldam is very much in the Germanic style, a tall and strong
:21:26. > :21:36.rider. Fascinating to see how the horses adapt to different types.
:21:37. > :21:55.What a class round! Beezie has ridden all kinds of horses. Will
:21:56. > :22:00.this be Cortes C's chance? Typical Beezie Madden, never looking under
:22:01. > :22:03.stress. She always rides as though she is extremely confident and
:22:04. > :22:16.relaxed. Very good clear around to start her
:22:17. > :22:17.campaign. Husband John crucial in her performance and build-up to
:22:18. > :22:29.this. Absolute hush as the French man
:22:30. > :22:35.starts his campaign, Patrice Delaveau on Orient Express. He has
:22:36. > :22:36.been in the first four ever since we started this show-jumping
:22:37. > :22:49.championship. Just to remind everybody watching,
:22:50. > :22:58.one fence down, four faults. If they go over the time allowed, 64
:22:59. > :23:02.seconds, every time there is a commencement of a four second
:23:03. > :23:09.period, they get one-time faults. The first couple taken it slowly
:23:10. > :23:23.because the time is quite generous and they got quite close. This
:23:24. > :23:27.little stallion is by Quick Star. Steady for the last fence. And the
:23:28. > :23:43.stadium are cheering! Rolf God and Benson has one fence
:23:44. > :23:51.down so he is the one who has got it all to do. -- Rolf-Goran Bengtsson.
:23:52. > :23:56.They now have to compete on their colleagues' horses. Orient Express
:23:57. > :24:01.was technically superb. He lifts his front legs and does absolutely
:24:02. > :24:05.everything to leave the fences up. A smaller, shorter, striding horse
:24:06. > :24:17.that he gives everything every time he leaves the floor.
:24:18. > :24:29.Out goes the Frenchman, happy so far. Confirmation of his score. A
:24:30. > :24:33.good start. There is Jeroen Dubbeldam and confirmation of the
:24:34. > :24:43.scores after each of them have ridden their own horses. Well, eyes
:24:44. > :24:48.down in the warm up area. The bell goes and that means they have all
:24:49. > :24:54.got the same period of time to warm up the horse, get used to it. These
:24:55. > :25:00.guys are so experienced, they will very quickly get the feel of what
:25:01. > :25:05.they need to do. The World Championship is one part of this
:25:06. > :25:10.man's CV that is currently missing. He will be trying very hard to put
:25:11. > :25:14.that right this afternoon, despite having one fence down, the only
:25:15. > :25:22.rider to do so so far. You get an early glimpse of the horse just
:25:23. > :25:26.beginning to react. That told me a lot, when he landed. Rolf-Goran
:25:27. > :25:30.Bengtsson is a strong rider, who probably put extra leg on and the
:25:31. > :25:38.horse shot away and got quite strong. This is the youngest horse
:25:39. > :25:50.in the field, Zenith, and Rolf-Goran Bengtsson is on board.
:25:51. > :25:57.Already watching the difference in Rolf-Goran Bengtsson's style. When
:25:58. > :26:00.he rides his own horse, he is quite physical and he is sitting very
:26:01. > :26:10.quietly because then it is so quick to pick up the pace. -- Zenith is so
:26:11. > :26:15.quick. No squeezing, just let the horse do it. He is massively
:26:16. > :26:21.powerful but just getting a bit upset. When you are trying so hard
:26:22. > :26:25.to keep the horse balanced and steady it is easy to get time faults
:26:26. > :26:33.and he has had the same fence down as on his own. Zenith is getting a
:26:34. > :26:40.bit upset here. He has got to try and get home in under 64 seconds and
:26:41. > :26:49.he is a long way from home yet. That was the back of Jeroen Dubbeldam
:26:50. > :27:04.watching. Really not Rolf-Goran 's day. He might get two time faults.
:27:05. > :27:08.Not quite three. Two time faults. Rolf-Goran Bengtsson is definitely
:27:09. > :27:13.Not quite three. Two time faults. looking to have a very tough
:27:14. > :27:18.afternoon this afternoon. This really did not go according to plan
:27:19. > :27:24.whatsoever. His jumping was to shop. That is the fence that he got down
:27:25. > :27:27.and he hit it really hard. He is attacking the poll and instead of
:27:28. > :27:31.being relaxed and getting his body in the air, he is taking it on. He
:27:32. > :27:42.is never able to get into a rhythm. And time faults as well.
:27:43. > :27:55.Confirmation of that score of ten. The American lady, pipped at the
:27:56. > :27:59.very last fence at the Worlds in 2006 when she was beaten into silver
:28:00. > :28:08.medal. Now riding Rolf-Goran Bengtsson's horse. Round number two
:28:09. > :28:12.for Beezie Madden. Fascinating watching her in the warm up because
:28:13. > :28:19.she jumped very few fences. She has obviously decided to save his job.
:28:20. > :28:24.15 years old now. He will find this tough enough. This is the fence that
:28:25. > :28:31.he had with his own rider but he has had the middle part. Not really
:28:32. > :28:34.using his body today and that is the second fence that this horse has had
:28:35. > :28:49.down today. The horse is trying to pull down on
:28:50. > :28:52.her. I think he is quite strong and that is why Rolf-Goran Bengtsson
:28:53. > :29:03.ride since so brilliantly. She has done it. Nicely inside the time for
:29:04. > :29:19.Beezie Madden. This time it is the middle part of
:29:20. > :29:31.the combination. He just dropped his back legs that time.
:29:32. > :29:52.up area. Four faults in two rounds. Rolf-Goran Bengtsson on ten in two
:29:53. > :29:55.rounds. Now it is Patrice Delaveau in his first world championships
:29:56. > :30:00.final on the American horse Cortes C. The Frenchman won the title in
:30:01. > :30:12.1990. This horse is so different from his
:30:13. > :30:19.own horse, Orient Express. A big, rangy horse with a lot of blood and
:30:20. > :30:28.He is now That was brilliantly ridden.
:30:29. > :30:29.He is now his jump and not get too close on
:30:30. > :30:43.take-off. able to get inside the 64 seconds
:30:44. > :30:55.time allowed. APPLAUSE The first double clear goes
:30:56. > :31:05.to France. The 49-year-old Patrice Dell la view. And look at that
:31:06. > :31:14.crowd. Patrice Delaveau.
:31:15. > :31:21.Can Well, congratulations there to Patrice Delaveau. He didn't look too
:31:22. > :31:30.comfortable in the warm-up but worked out quickly how he had to
:31:31. > :31:41.ride Cortes. Did a brilliant job. Very good start for the Frenchman.
:31:42. > :31:49.So, the Dutch represented now, Jeroen Dubbeldam just asking the
:31:50. > :31:53.judges to stop the clock while the horse just gets relaxed. Jeroen
:31:54. > :31:59.Dubbeldam for the Netherlands, cleared on his own horse, looking
:32:00. > :32:08.now to join, Patrice Delaveau and try and go clear on Orient Express.
:32:09. > :32:15.It gives you some idea of how tall Jeroen Dubbeldam s making Orient
:32:16. > :32:23.Express look really small. Almost like a little pony.
:32:24. > :32:45.Beautifully down the combination. Just opening the stride a little bit
:32:46. > :32:52.here. He just has to watch the time enough. You can't be too cautious.
:32:53. > :32:59.Well, this is the horse that my prediction was that he would be the
:33:00. > :33:02.best horse. Is he going to cope with all these different riders? Just
:33:03. > :33:10.coming down to the last fence. He has done it. Lovely round. Not
:33:11. > :33:17.ridden totally in the same way as Patrice Delaveau. But it has worked.
:33:18. > :33:20.It was a very good ride from Jerome. Two clears for Jerome. Two clears
:33:21. > :33:33.for Patrice. -- Jeroen. Well, he sat very differently to
:33:34. > :33:38.Patrice Delaveau, Jeroen Dubbeldam. He is much taller, obviously. But he
:33:39. > :33:41.had to be careful not to move around too much because he is so tall and
:33:42. > :33:54.he gave the horse a fabulous ride. The Dutch management getting very
:33:55. > :34:04.excited, indeed. And you can't blame them. The double hasn't often been
:34:05. > :34:08.done. So, Jeroen Dubbeldam, double clearing his two rides. Couldn't
:34:09. > :34:17.have done better. He is saying, "That's the stuff we
:34:18. > :34:20.want, Jeroen." Well, we are at the half-way point. There it is,
:34:21. > :34:25.Rolf-Goran Bengtsson is the man who has got off to a disappointing
:34:26. > :34:31.start. Beezie Madden, she is behind a bit at the half-way point. At the
:34:32. > :34:38.moment it is Net lands and France. -- Netherlands and France. So,
:34:39. > :34:44.Beezie Madden with her third ride, zenith. To stay in the hunt she
:34:45. > :34:48.really needs a clear round. And she rode in the Worlds in 2006. She had
:34:49. > :35:07.with her the eventual champion. Very sensitive and powerful, Zenith.
:35:08. > :35:12.So far responding very well to Beezie's very light touch. Living
:35:13. > :35:20.dangerously and that's the problem with this horse. He really is
:35:21. > :35:26.sensitive. When gets stressed like that, he shoots forward. Doesn't
:35:27. > :35:30.relax and make the shape in the air. That gives you some idea how
:35:31. > :35:37.brilliantly Jeroen Dubbeldam is riding this horse. Because, not an
:35:38. > :35:46.easy ride. Now she's not going to get time faults. Good round. Four,
:35:47. > :35:48.but it puts now Beezie Madden on the back foot. Both Rolf-Goran Bengtsson
:35:49. > :36:06.and Beezie Madden have lost ground. Beezie's disappointed. She thought
:36:07. > :36:11.she got the measure of this horse but watch him here. Shot forward and
:36:12. > :36:15.he is so stressy, when he does that and that was a horrible moment. She
:36:16. > :36:20.did brilliantly to recover from that. And what she was able to do
:36:21. > :36:24.which Rolf-Goran Bengtsson wasn't, was to still get around inside the
:36:25. > :36:30.time because when the horses get that stressy, you tend to pull at
:36:31. > :36:37.them too much. So, after three rounds, there is
:36:38. > :36:41.Beezie Madden's score. She is on 8. Already you can see Patrice really
:36:42. > :36:49.worried about this horse, getting downhill, getting on the forehand.
:36:50. > :36:54.Patrice Delaveau, then, for France, on Casall Ask. The horse at the
:36:55. > :37:04.moment, Casall Ask, has had two fences down for the two riders, one
:37:05. > :37:08.for each. For his own rider, he had the last part of the combination.
:37:09. > :37:12.Beezie Madden had the middle part. So, coming into the combination,
:37:13. > :37:20.Patrice is going to have to really sit up and hold this horse together.
:37:21. > :37:27.Well, he has done something his own rider couldn't do. He has jumped the
:37:28. > :37:33.combination. This is a crucial round now. If he can get clear with Casall
:37:34. > :37:35.Ask, it puts him in such a strong hand. Two fences to go. It is
:37:36. > :37:54.getting a bit downhill there. Done it. Done it! Patrice Delaveau
:37:55. > :38:00.has got his nose in front, surely. Look at the time. He has got a time
:38:01. > :38:11.fault. He has got one. How important will that be? Masterly ride. Well,
:38:12. > :38:13.here is the binges. He is the only rider. Patrice Delaveau has managed
:38:14. > :38:17.to jump the combination rider. Patrice Delaveau has managed
:38:18. > :38:19.Ask. He had an extra stride coming down to the last fence and he has
:38:20. > :38:31.got the one time fault. So Delaveau can have a pause and a
:38:32. > :38:40.rest for a minute, happy with his work.
:38:41. > :38:44.Jeroen Dubbeldam, Jeroen with Cortes C. Can he make it three out of
:38:45. > :39:00.three? Of course, the thing he has to be
:39:01. > :39:06.careful of, he really doesn't want to get the time fault to get his
:39:07. > :39:12.nose in front. He has to avoid that. A great start there. Keeping up just
:39:13. > :39:15.enough rhythm. This big striding horse, perfect stride there. Oh,
:39:16. > :39:39.that was superb. He Time allowed, remember, 64 seconds.
:39:40. > :39:47.He turns for home. He should be OK, if he can jump this one. He has done
:39:48. > :39:51.it, what a round. Such a sympathetic ride from the 42-year-old. He now
:39:52. > :39:58.has three out of three and remember the Frenchman has ridden three, but
:39:59. > :40:03.he has a time fault. So, Jeroen Dubbeldam, boxy as mum and daughter
:40:04. > :40:07.of jeroen really celebrate. Brilliant, all the way. Absolutely
:40:08. > :40:12.in the right place. Down the combination, Cortes C. Superb. Down
:40:13. > :40:25.to the last fence. There he is, makes the shape inside the time.
:40:26. > :40:31.There actually Jeroen's sister, too, celebrating. Well, he is eight
:40:32. > :40:39.fences away from winning this. One more round. He is amazing. Really.
:40:40. > :40:49.So Jeroen's score there, the best at the moment A clean sheet.
:40:50. > :40:57.So, there we are, there is Rolf-Goran's score at the moment,
:40:58. > :41:06.with ten being the worst score of the four. He would love to have two
:41:07. > :41:13.clear rounds to finish. The man deserves T he is a class act. --
:41:14. > :41:31.deserves it. So far, looking much more at home on
:41:32. > :41:34.the little stallion, Orient Express. Beautifully done, the combination.
:41:35. > :41:36.the little stallion, Orient Express. And this horse, he does keep trying.
:41:37. > :42:00.He is a real trooper. Well, he is well inside the time. .
:42:01. > :42:06.Oh, no. It's done. There is a best horse prize and that four faults
:42:07. > :42:12.might well take Orient Express out of that equation. It had gone so
:42:13. > :42:18.well. So Rolf-Goran, it is not going right for Rolf-Goran.
:42:19. > :42:22.This is a terrible day at the office for Rolf-Goran Bengtsson. Just when
:42:23. > :42:27.he seemed to have settled it nicely with Orient Express, ran on down to
:42:28. > :42:36.the last fence. Didn't touch a pole all the way around and that's how
:42:37. > :42:53.the Swedes are feeling about it. Well, Rolf-Goran Bengtsson now adds
:42:54. > :42:57.another four. He is on to 14, with one ride left. It does look like
:42:58. > :43:05.fourth place for Rolf-Goran, for Sweden. So, there we are,
:43:06. > :43:10.confirmation that Rolf-Goran Bengtsson is on 14, after three
:43:11. > :43:18.horses ridden. They've each got one horse left to ride. This format, it
:43:19. > :43:24.is such an incredibly tense situation all round. That was
:43:25. > :43:28.beautifully ridden. This horse looks more settled there with pa trees
:43:29. > :43:39.than with any of the other riders. -- with Patrice. Patrice Delaveau,
:43:40. > :43:54.going for clear, to set the target, for France.
:43:55. > :44:01.The difficulty with Zenith is coming into the combination. You have to
:44:02. > :44:11.jump the big oxer with enough energy and then try to sit really quiet for
:44:12. > :44:13.those two verticals. Beautifully ridden. That's the fence he had down
:44:14. > :44:41.last time. Oh, the man is on fire. And the
:44:42. > :44:44.crowd stand. CHEERING AND
:44:45. > :44:50.APPLAUSE He has gone clear, well inside the
:44:51. > :44:56.time. He has finished on a score of one. No error at all from Jeroen
:44:57. > :44:59.Dubbeldam and the game is very definitely open. Any mistake by the
:45:00. > :45:15.Dutchman, this man wins. Brilliantly ridden. He had a tiny
:45:16. > :45:20.rub coming out of the combination, but the Frenchman has proved he has
:45:21. > :45:25.got the feeling to adepartment to ride these different horses. -- to
:45:26. > :45:43.adapt. He has jumped clear on all of them. Has this man done enough? That
:45:44. > :45:49.is the target. Something better than the one time fault that Patrice
:45:50. > :45:56.Delaveau had on Casall Ask. He really has ridden superbly. So, the
:45:57. > :46:01.next minute, minute-and-a-half will, I think, decide the World Title.
:46:02. > :46:06.Will it be this man? Or will it be the one in the ring? Patrice
:46:07. > :46:12.Delaveau has completed his rides. He has finished with one. This man,
:46:13. > :46:21.with this horse to ride, this horse being Casall Ask, at the moment, as
:46:22. > :46:25.I said, a score Casall Ask, of 9 faults. Two with a fence down and
:46:26. > :46:33.one with a time fault. Can this man jump the clear to give him the World
:46:34. > :47:08.Title? Jeroen Dubbeldam, a clear to win the World Title.
:47:09. > :47:17.Oh, well, he has got that combination out of the way. That was
:47:18. > :47:24.the toughest fence. Needs to be inside the time as well. A reminder
:47:25. > :47:30.- if he got a time fault, we jump off. We would be jumping off. He is
:47:31. > :47:37.two fences away from the world title.
:47:38. > :47:41.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. Oh, what a performance, it is a
:47:42. > :47:48.double World Championship for the Dutch. They win the team and Jeroen
:47:49. > :47:57.Dubbeldam is World Champion. What a performance. Outstanding and the way
:47:58. > :48:01.he rode Casall Ask here. It went better for him than anybody else. It
:48:02. > :48:08.is his fourth time in the ring, obviously. It went perfect. He is a
:48:09. > :48:11.worthy champion. Yes, and there was his family celebrating.
:48:12. > :48:21.worthy champion. Yes, and there was got the bronze medal to decide. They
:48:22. > :48:27.are saying, quack bad luck Patrice" but this man has done it in style.
:48:28. > :48:31.He Z you have to feel for Patrice, though, he jumped clear, just the
:48:32. > :48:39.one time fault. It couldn't have been any tighter. But what a week
:48:40. > :48:43.the Dutch have had. Jeroen's wife in that very happy party. A fabulous
:48:44. > :48:47.combination. Just touched the pole there. He had his luck but he held
:48:48. > :48:52.his nerve, kept the rhythm. No time fault. There he is, jumping the last
:48:53. > :49:05.fence and that's the moment he knows he's done it.
:49:06. > :49:13.This Dutchman really is a great rider. He can sit on anything, as he
:49:14. > :49:22.has proved this afternoon, and get a great tune out of it. Well, there
:49:23. > :49:30.are very few people who have won Olympic individual gold and world
:49:31. > :49:35.gold and this man has just done it. Jeroen Dubbeldam, World Champion on
:49:36. > :49:39.the British-produced Zenith. Disappointment for Patrice Delaveau.
:49:40. > :49:48.So near, yet so far, just one time fault.
:49:49. > :49:54.Well, Cortes C, so far, has got a clean sheet. Rolf-Goran wants a
:49:55. > :50:04.clean sheet. Can they put it together?
:50:05. > :50:11.If he is going to retain any chance of winning the bronze medal he needs
:50:12. > :50:16.a clear round. There is no doubt about it. This horse, the horse you
:50:17. > :50:20.picked out, hasn't had a chance so far. I might have a chance of
:50:21. > :50:26.getting one right. You may have got one right. This is the horse that
:50:27. > :50:30.has looked absolutely brilliant. Down that combination, you see how
:50:31. > :50:32.class he is. He is still giving a foot over each element, even at this
:50:33. > :50:43.stage. Well, two fences between this horse
:50:44. > :50:53.and being the best horse we have seen this week. Cruising into the
:50:54. > :50:58.last fence. Jumps it easily. A class round from a class jockey. It's
:50:59. > :51:04.Sweden's Rolf-Goran Bengtsson, finishing up on a clear round. He is
:51:05. > :51:07.going to finish on 14, for his score personally but the horse has jumped
:51:08. > :51:11.four clean rounds and that will be the horse of the World
:51:12. > :51:15.Championships, 2014. The Maddens will be delighted with that. That
:51:16. > :51:20.horse has only had one fence down the entire xen competition. I mean
:51:21. > :51:32.-- competition. I mean how many fence has he jumped at this level?
:51:33. > :51:36.Quite extraordinary. Well, that man missed the World Title by one time
:51:37. > :51:48.fault. It will be his horse that goes last. That's for Beezie Madden.
:51:49. > :51:54.A lovely pat on the neck for Rolf-Goran Bengtsson for Cortes C,
:51:55. > :52:00.finishing with a clear round. He is on 14. It means Beezie Madden can
:52:01. > :52:10.have one fence down and win the bronze, but if she had two, he - he
:52:11. > :52:15.would be Rolf-Goran's bronze medal. Beezie Madden, so popular with her
:52:16. > :52:26.contemporaries. Can she finish off with a clear and get the bronze?
:52:27. > :52:31.The only fence he has had down so far, has been the last fence with
:52:32. > :52:42.A very different type of horse - Rolf-Goran Bengtsson.
:52:43. > :52:46.A very different type of horse - it's fascinating to see - show
:52:47. > :52:51.jumpers come in all shapes and sizes. This one has a shorter
:52:52. > :52:55.canter, not so much movement in his shoulders. Oh, and that has gone as
:52:56. > :53:03.well. Now it's tight. Can't afford another. Still stays in bronze. If
:53:04. > :53:08.it stays on four. But one more, and Rolf-Goran will get the bronze.
:53:09. > :53:28.Final line. This is for the bronze. Bronze to America. To Beezie Madden.
:53:29. > :53:32.Quite close to the time but that actually wouldn't have made any
:53:33. > :53:36.difference. She just had the one and that one will put her on 12 and take
:53:37. > :53:44.the bronze to the USA. There that one will put her on 12 and take
:53:45. > :53:53.man who misses out in 2014. Rolf-Goran Bengtsson. And there is
:53:54. > :53:57.the lady who wins bronze. What a proud day for the Dubbledams. They
:53:58. > :54:04.have been a family Sol involved in show jumping for so many years. He's
:54:05. > :54:09.had some difficult times but my word, he has got through them.
:54:10. > :54:15.Olympic champion and now World Champion.
:54:16. > :54:19.Well, there is that final confirmation of the 2014 World
:54:20. > :54:24.Individual Showjumping Championship. Going to the Netherlands. Jeroen
:54:25. > :54:32.Dubbeldam. Silver to Franz and the bronze to United States of America.
:54:33. > :54:35.CLARE BALDING: Back at Burghley the house looking magnificent. We have
:54:36. > :54:39.been watching the action. It is an interesting competition, would you
:54:40. > :54:45.want to be a part of it? Do you think it could be improved? I would
:54:46. > :54:50.love to be a part of it. My main aim would be to competing in the world
:54:51. > :54:54.games. An injury stopped me from being there. It looked like a great
:54:55. > :54:57.competition. Really exciting for the fans and sport when they have that
:54:58. > :55:00.changeover in front of all the people and they can get to
:55:01. > :55:04.understand the problems we have on a regular basis in the warm-up areas.
:55:05. > :55:10.I'm happy they have an award for the leading horse as well Absolutely.
:55:11. > :55:14.Riders are only as good as their horses and Cortes Beezie's horse has
:55:15. > :55:18.been outstanding the whole week and proved it today with all four
:55:19. > :55:24.different riders. It is important to recognise. Poor Patrice Delaveau.
:55:25. > :55:29.You said as it happened - that will be expensive, the time fault. It
:55:30. > :55:33.ended up being the difference between gold and silver. Sometimes
:55:34. > :55:39.time faults can be more expensive than a row down. It is what cost him
:55:40. > :55:42.the gold probably today but Jeroen Dubbeldam ran fantastic. He has
:55:43. > :55:47.already been Olympic champion. He has proved he can do it. I think he
:55:48. > :55:50.probably had the most difficult horse which, in the end, played into
:55:51. > :55:56.his hands. That individual show jumping brings to an end two weeks
:55:57. > :56:01.of competition at the World Equestrian Games. Great Britain have
:56:02. > :56:08.come out ahead in terms of total medals. And Charlotte Dujardin
:56:09. > :56:16.taking golds. She really is at the top of her
:56:17. > :56:20.game. She has such a beautiful harmony with her horse. They look
:56:21. > :56:24.fantastic together. So two individual golds for them. The team
:56:25. > :56:30.silver as well. A brilliant evident for Lee Pearson and the Para
:56:31. > :56:36.dressage riders. Leigh back in the big time. Two individuals for him,
:56:37. > :56:41.golds and one team gold and gold for Sophie Christian son and silvers for
:56:42. > :56:45.Natasha baker and Sophie Wells. This is the sport of vaulting. It is
:56:46. > :56:48.effectively gymnastics on the horseback and Great Britain has the
:56:49. > :56:53.best in the world, this is Joanne he canles who took the individual gold.
:56:54. > :56:58.Her and her sister Hannah also won the team bronze. It is rather
:56:59. > :57:03.elegant. Quite dangerous as well. In eventing, the team won the silver
:57:04. > :57:07.medal and this man, William Fox-Pitt also added the individual bronze.
:57:08. > :57:09.medal and this man, William Fox-Pitt Tina Cook part of the
:57:10. > :57:13.silver-medal-winning team and so, too, was Zara Phillips who jumped a
:57:14. > :57:17.very rare clear round in the show jumping arena. It was tough in that
:57:18. > :57:23.stadium. She celebrated as if she'd won the whole thing. And Harry
:57:24. > :57:28.Knead, was an important part of the team. I'm glad you are here. Reid
:57:29. > :57:32.great to see you. When you stepped up on France, you got a great
:57:33. > :57:36.reception. They understood what you have been through. It epitomised the
:57:37. > :57:41.highs and lows of sport. It was tragic it was the greatest moment of
:57:42. > :57:45.my career on the one hand but the saddest day of my life in another.
:57:46. > :57:48.But it was great to be part of a competition and have the support of
:57:49. > :57:52.team-mates and the crowd behind us. In terms of your own personal
:57:53. > :57:57.learning curve, part of your team out there, your senior debut Yes
:57:58. > :58:00.Tyne had been a life-long ambition to get on the senior team and it was
:58:01. > :58:04.great. And particular little having such a good atmosphere, which we
:58:05. > :58:09.noticed, there was such a positive time in the British camp. We get on
:58:10. > :58:13.well and the whole management was very positive A great experience. I
:58:14. > :58:19.should a add on a personal note. A year, almost to the day, from when
:58:20. > :58:24.you came back from shattering both your elbows, it was extraordinary. I
:58:25. > :58:28.know so many people have reacted to the tragedy of losing your horse and
:58:29. > :58:34.sending you commiserations. But thank you to both of you. We will
:58:35. > :58:39.leave you, with a bit of history, here at Burghley.
