:01:05. > :01:11.Just weeks after the Olympics in Rio, the world of eventing moves to

:01:12. > :01:14.Burleigh House in Lincolnshire, where the best will be competing for

:01:15. > :01:20.one of the sport's most prestigious prizes, the Land Rover Burghley

:01:21. > :01:23.Horse Trials. For many, this is the sport's greatest challenge. Some of

:01:24. > :01:28.you watching may be new to eventing, so for any of you are unsure as to

:01:29. > :01:34.how it works, let us explain. Eventing, not for the faint-hearted.

:01:35. > :01:37.It is the triathlon of equestrian sport and one for the adrenaline

:01:38. > :01:42.seekers. It is where two hearts and two minds come by and for one goal.

:01:43. > :01:46.Phase one, the dressage, requires precision, harmony and above all,

:01:47. > :01:52.control. It is the foundation work for tackling what lies ahead, the

:01:53. > :01:57.cross-country. On a 4-star track, courage, conviction and bravery are

:01:58. > :02:00.essential in conquering the huge obstacles and technical fence

:02:01. > :02:07.combinations. If you made it to the final day, the show-jumping will

:02:08. > :02:11.test the stamina, agility and nerves. It is where Leeds are lost

:02:12. > :02:15.and champions made. We have some seasoned Burghley specialists

:02:16. > :02:19.amongst our entries this year and a truly international field of event

:02:20. > :02:23.riders from all over Europe and countries including the USA, New

:02:24. > :02:28.Zealand and Brazil. But heading the cast list is Andrew Nicholson. He is

:02:29. > :02:32.the only rider to win three Burghleys back-to-back. After a

:02:33. > :02:35.serious fall which nearly left him paralysed in 2015, he returns to

:02:36. > :02:41.retain his title and produce a fairy tale ending. Former Rolex Grand Slam

:02:42. > :02:50.winner Pippa Funnell brings a wealth of experience to compete for the

:02:51. > :02:54.second time. A real crowd pleaser, this will be her fifth Burleigh.

:02:55. > :02:58.Proving that age is no barrier to this sport, 60-year-old Sir Mark

:02:59. > :03:05.Todd comes back from Rio after an individual seventh place, here

:03:06. > :03:09.riding on the 4-star track. With an Olympic bronze medal hanging up at

:03:10. > :03:15.home, Australia's Christopher Burton is having a great year and could be

:03:16. > :03:19.Andrew's biggest threat on Nobilis 18. The fastest event rider on the

:03:20. > :03:25.planet and hotfoot from Rio, Jamal Price brings classic my way to the

:03:26. > :03:29.Burghley party. She will be looking to improve on her fifth place last

:03:30. > :03:33.year. And former winner Oliver Townend is in flying form after

:03:34. > :03:37.back-to-back wins in the event rider Masters series. Oliver hopes to

:03:38. > :03:43.carry his winning ways to become a double Burghley champion. As always

:03:44. > :03:49.at Burleigh, there are first timers, and this year's debutants come from

:03:50. > :04:01.both ends of the age spectrum. I am Imogen Bogan this is my first time

:04:02. > :04:05.at Burleigh. I am 21. I will be 55 in October. I have always wanted to

:04:06. > :04:10.ride at top level. I didn't know when I got home that he would be

:04:11. > :04:14.that horse. I did a bit of eventing when I joined pony club at 14, and

:04:15. > :04:19.from then on, I went to the two star levels in California, which was as

:04:20. > :04:29.far as I thought I could go. I have had him six years. If I think it was

:04:30. > :04:34.two weekends ago, four years ago that he won the Championships. I

:04:35. > :04:38.have no raised four children. They have gone through college and now it

:04:39. > :04:44.is my time. It is a lot of hard work, especially when I was at

:04:45. > :04:49.school. Yeah, early mornings, late evenings. But it is all worth it.

:04:50. > :04:55.When you get to an event like this, you forget about the early mornings

:04:56. > :04:59.and things. It is so exciting to be here. He was a racehorse that did

:05:00. > :05:05.terribly on the track and develop the event horse. He's 17 now, so he

:05:06. > :05:11.is breaking age barriers. I didn't go to three star level until I hit

:05:12. > :05:17.50, so as a team, we are the more worldly wise, I would say. We are

:05:18. > :05:21.very worldly and proud of the fact that we are doing this when we are

:05:22. > :05:25.more mature. And we hope to show that majority in the cross-country

:05:26. > :05:31.and show-jumping. It is so special to have got him here through all the

:05:32. > :05:39.preparations, keeping him happy and on the road. So excited to get here.

:05:40. > :05:43.I really want to compete, especially on him, because he is so special.

:05:44. > :05:48.The reason I am here is because I never knew what I was capable of. My

:05:49. > :05:54.first three star was at 50, so it has been an amazing journey. Joining

:05:55. > :05:56.me to talk about the dressage is Ian Stark, as always part of our

:05:57. > :06:00.commentary team here at Burleigh, not riding although he is wearing

:06:01. > :06:03.jodhpurs and boots. He has been dubbed in another show here. Let's

:06:04. > :06:09.talk about the dressage first. As was shown at the Olympics, eventing

:06:10. > :06:12.is a three phase competition, not a dressage competition. But if you

:06:13. > :06:17.want to win, you have got to have a good test. You have to be good at

:06:18. > :06:21.all disciplines now, and the dressage is important not because it

:06:22. > :06:25.was a competition in itself, but because it is the training for the

:06:26. > :06:29.cross-country and jumping. The better they are in the dressage, the

:06:30. > :06:32.more rideable they are in the cross-country. The good thing in the

:06:33. > :06:38.dressage is that it is not the final decision, it is all about the

:06:39. > :06:42.cross-country. Here at Burleigh and again at the Olympics in Rio, tough

:06:43. > :06:47.cross-country courses. Very influential, lots of room for riders

:06:48. > :06:51.to make mistakes. Unfortunately for one rider, it was the final

:06:52. > :06:55.decision. The Frenchman was eliminated during the dressage.

:06:56. > :07:01.Yeah, the horse was not quite right. The judges unanimously agreed that

:07:02. > :07:04.he was not quite level. It becomes a welfare issue. They don't know

:07:05. > :07:08.whether the horse is in pain, so they stopped the horse and did

:07:09. > :07:14.tests. It was the right decision, and sadly he is out of the

:07:15. > :07:16.competition. As you say, welfare is paramount in any eventing

:07:17. > :07:21.competition, but who impressed you most today? The inform man was

:07:22. > :07:26.Christopher Burton. He was very impressive on the flat. His horses

:07:27. > :07:31.are beautifully trained and light on their feet and support and elastic

:07:32. > :07:37.in the way they are going. Then we have Bettina Hoy, who is in second

:07:38. > :07:40.place. Since the 80s, she has been up there in the dressage. And she

:07:41. > :07:44.has a point to prove because she was not picked for the German team in

:07:45. > :07:50.Rio. She always has a point to prove, but she will be wanting to

:07:51. > :07:53.say, you got the wrong team. But she will be more interested in winning

:07:54. > :08:04.this competition. Then we have the great Andrew Nicholson in third

:08:05. > :08:08.place. He performed really well. No Britons in the top three, but there

:08:09. > :08:31.are some in the top ten. Let's have a look at the leaderboard.

:08:32. > :08:37.So now we come to the meat of the competition, the cross-country. This

:08:38. > :08:42.is fenced ten, the Rolex Grand Slam fault, or as some call it, the part

:08:43. > :08:47.of Ichi, because it would not look out of place at the Grand National

:08:48. > :08:52.entry. It is absolutely vast. The spread is nine feet. It is five foot

:08:53. > :08:56.three hi, enormous, and marks the beginning of the most testing part

:08:57. > :08:59.of the track here at Burleigh. As always, it has been designed by

:09:00. > :09:03.Captain Mark Phillips. He has kept the same direction, but he has

:09:04. > :09:07.changed the fences and the combinations, so no room for

:09:08. > :09:11.complacency. This year's Burleigh is as much of a challenge as it ever

:09:12. > :09:20.was. We have a very exciting cross-country course ahead. Mark

:09:21. > :09:22.Phillips has given us some pretty exciting challenges. 11 minutes and

:09:23. > :09:30.11 seconds to complete 6370 metre course. This is three fences on a

:09:31. > :09:42.left turn. It gets you focused before you jump into the lake for

:09:43. > :09:49.the second time. I think the 5c, there is a lot for them to look at.

:09:50. > :09:55.You will land out into the water, which means the drop will not be so

:09:56. > :10:00.bad. You can either go to the right, which they bounce up, or you can

:10:01. > :10:07.skim past that and go to a long stride. It is one where you almost

:10:08. > :10:13.prefer not to have the decision, but you do, and you have to commit to

:10:14. > :10:17.what you do. Well, we have lots of alternatives for the riders. They

:10:18. > :10:20.have to make their own decisions as to their capabilities, and then the

:10:21. > :10:23.Long gallop up the winners' Avenue. It is all uphill and pretty

:10:24. > :10:31.strenuous before they come to the biggest ditch you have ever seen.

:10:32. > :10:38.Every year, this leap looks huge. It is a daunting fence. This year, we

:10:39. > :10:42.go off to the right to unbending line to another brush, or if you

:10:43. > :10:45.don't like the look of the ditch, you can take the option of jumping a

:10:46. > :10:49.double brush to the right, going all the way round and then jumping

:10:50. > :10:55.another brush and turning, but it is very tight. Than it is a gallop down

:10:56. > :11:04.the hill to one of the most influential fences on this course.

:11:05. > :11:09.Every year, Captain Phillips puts in a tricky combination. This year is

:11:10. > :11:13.no exception. You have to be very accurate after going up a very steep

:11:14. > :11:17.slope here to a corner, but you have the alternative of the gate if you

:11:18. > :11:22.don't fancy it. We are playing catch up after our dressage, so I know in

:11:23. > :11:27.my case, I want to be thinking straight. They have got to have lots

:11:28. > :11:31.of power coming up this slope. We have a level bit of ground, so they

:11:32. > :11:36.will get one stride to be accurate and plenty of power to jump over. We

:11:37. > :11:41.don't want them biking this, because that will make the striding

:11:42. > :11:47.difficult. And so important all the way through to stay committed and

:11:48. > :11:51.stick on your nine. Stay slightly to the right. We don't want to be drawn

:11:52. > :11:57.to the left because of what we have got behind. Two positive strides

:11:58. > :12:02.here to quite a wide feeder. We have a really steep slope the other side,

:12:03. > :12:06.where the horses will whizz down, a bit like roller coasters. So the

:12:07. > :12:13.riders will have to be sitting back, start to get a bit of control, to

:12:14. > :12:17.stay focused on our line still, in that balance. Not much time to do

:12:18. > :12:24.anything but get on that line and keep between those flags. So easy to

:12:25. > :12:27.run out here. And another corner. They will have to be really accurate

:12:28. > :12:33.and you don't want to waste time by doing any alternatives. You have to

:12:34. > :12:37.kick on. What do you think, old girl? I will give a go. After that

:12:38. > :12:44.tricky combination, it's a very distance to the Rolex and more

:12:45. > :12:47.choices for the riders. I am still trying to work out how my horse will

:12:48. > :12:53.read that ditch. The important thing is to jumped the ditch, because you

:12:54. > :12:59.can't trot through and you have to have a good gallop. There isn't an

:13:00. > :13:04.alternative route which is very doable. I think you will lose a bit

:13:05. > :13:14.of time, but it is very jump ball. Then there was a long gallop down

:13:15. > :13:19.the hill, heading down towards the trout hatchery. Deep water here and

:13:20. > :13:22.lots of choices. Andrew and I are going to try and talk our way

:13:23. > :13:29.through the Land Rover Trail hatchery. We are here at fence 20

:13:30. > :13:37.and 21, a nice brush fence at 20. But then it gets more tricky. I

:13:38. > :13:47.think we want to stick on the edge of the slope, so we get a nice turn

:13:48. > :13:50.into the log. I don't want to go up the hill and then come down the

:13:51. > :13:59.steep part of the hill. I would rather keep a smooth, flowing line

:14:00. > :14:07.around the jump, heading towards the tree, maybe the gap between the tree

:14:08. > :14:13.and the corner. Is that what you think, Oliver? Very much so. It is a

:14:14. > :14:19.big drop in here, so you need to be very committed to get them to jump

:14:20. > :14:24.in well, and an extremely quick here to gather your contact up, get them

:14:25. > :14:30.back in balance and jump the BC element, which is a big brush

:14:31. > :14:37.corner. For me, I would walk it and think it is four forward strides.

:14:38. > :14:42.But come the day, we might do five. We are going to jump into the water,

:14:43. > :14:49.land, look up, look at the corner and use our eyes and try and write

:14:50. > :14:56.whatever distance is coming up. Once you have done the B and C element,

:14:57. > :15:02.which is the big brush corner, it's not all over. You have then got

:15:03. > :15:05.another right angled turn to a very narrow skinny, the D element in the

:15:06. > :15:13.water, so it is going to happen very quick and fast. For me, I want to

:15:14. > :15:21.try and keep out a little over the corner, so I have a stride more

:15:22. > :15:24.before turning into jump the skinny in the water. When it comes to the

:15:25. > :15:31.day, we could jump one and flow direct to the next, but we like to

:15:32. > :15:40.think I can jump the corner, delay the turn, when I see a distance,

:15:41. > :15:46.turn and wide. It all sounds well planned, but whether it goes to

:15:47. > :15:49.plan, we shall see. After the trout hatchery, a couple

:15:50. > :15:54.of straightforward fences, and then it is down the hill to discovery

:15:55. > :15:58.Valley for the first visit. Towards the end of the course, this is where

:15:59. > :16:04.the riders have to make a decision. Do they stay aggressive and continue

:16:05. > :16:09.on over the skinny part at the end, or are they more conservative, take

:16:10. > :16:15.a pool between the first chest and the middle and then add a stride to

:16:16. > :16:24.the last? To remix it tricky because you are up and down a slope.

:16:25. > :16:32.It looks good this year, they say it every year is a real rider

:16:33. > :16:35.frightener. There are no two ways, you just have to get off the drop

:16:36. > :16:40.and then it is a bit of a roller-coaster ride down to the

:16:41. > :16:48.skinny, it comes and goes in a flash but hopefully if they jump off the

:16:49. > :16:52.back well, they will be OK. Through the discovery Valley into the main

:16:53. > :17:01.arena and the Long gallop home. It is very new, and they will be inside

:17:02. > :17:05.the time today. That is this year 's cross-country challenge, let us get

:17:06. > :17:12.straight to the action without commentary team of Ian Stark and

:17:13. > :17:16.Mike Tucker. COMMENTATOR: This demanding and undulating country,

:17:17. > :17:23.one of six winners. It is Oliver Townend, with the drop. The winner

:17:24. > :17:38.in 2009. A good man, to see round the courts. There is plenty ahead of

:17:39. > :17:39.him. He was on a dressage score 50.7.

:17:40. > :17:48.And he has got three rides. It is a nice easy start, from now on, it

:17:49. > :17:52.begins to get a bit more testing, huge crowd here. They have been

:17:53. > :17:58.coming in ever since eight o'clock this morning, at Burley Park,

:17:59. > :18:06.looking as brilliant as ever. Here comes the first water. This is where

:18:07. > :18:15.Michael John had a form last year, quite small. Beautiful bridge. Back

:18:16. > :18:20.on the grass. And quickly onto the anniversary splash. This is the real

:18:21. > :18:28.problem early on. The fences come thick and fast here. Decent sized

:18:29. > :18:33.brush first. And then this left-handed turn, to another

:18:34. > :18:37.combination of brushes. A big drop in, only makes it look fairly

:18:38. > :18:41.straightforward, there will be others that make it a bigger drop.

:18:42. > :18:54.Across the water, and then this option. And off to a good start.

:18:55. > :19:01.Now coming towards what is almost one of the most imposing fences on

:19:02. > :19:07.the course. It is two metres wide, it is big and up to now, the

:19:08. > :19:12.capabilities, one of the great features over the years, celebrating

:19:13. > :19:25.300 years of capability Brown worked here in Burley Park. -- capability

:19:26. > :19:34.Brown's work here in Burghley Park. He goes up the hill. Over these tree

:19:35. > :19:43.carriages. And it is a good start, for Oliver Townend, and blue. The

:19:44. > :19:49.yellow line is showing the direct route, the red is the long way, at

:19:50. > :19:58.least 15 seconds longer. Urging from the dark, the trees of the winners

:19:59. > :20:02.Avenue. -- emerging from the dark. He makes that look pretty easy. The

:20:03. > :20:08.competitors watching this will be pretty happy so far. And the yellow

:20:09. > :20:17.route showing the direct line, the red is the long way, but a long way

:20:18. > :20:21.to go. Nine nations and a first prize of 60 3000. Some of the best

:20:22. > :20:25.riders in the world, they will be looking many of them to go the

:20:26. > :20:30.quickest way possible, will they go direct. This one fence has probably

:20:31. > :20:36.caused more chatter and head scratching than any other on the

:20:37. > :20:49.course. This 14-year-old is owned by Michael McGrath, just approaching

:20:50. > :20:56.this did feature at the dairy farm. He gets in a little close. And he is

:20:57. > :20:59.going the long route. Quick change of mind, he said long route just to

:21:00. > :21:08.make sure that the judges knew what he was doing. There is quite a lot

:21:09. > :21:16.of added time there, no doubt about that. A good 15 seconds longer and

:21:17. > :21:21.that will put him behind the clock. We have a look at the quick route

:21:22. > :21:27.for the Rolex combination, the tricky ditch, the long way is only a

:21:28. > :21:33.couple of seconds longer, I think we will see lots of different choices

:21:34. > :21:37.here. The wonderful Burghley house in the background, no better

:21:38. > :21:45.backdrop to an event. As Oliver Townend comes to this Rolex complex.

:21:46. > :21:48.Approaching halfway. He makes it look easy. There will be a lot of

:21:49. > :21:56.others that don't make it look as easy as that, that is for certain.

:21:57. > :22:01.Coming now to the five minute mark, in the dip, of this 11 minutes and

:22:02. > :22:08.11 seconds to get inside the optimum time. The village green gives the

:22:09. > :22:13.ride is a bit of choice again. I think the right-hand route will

:22:14. > :22:25.probably be the favoured route. That date he's very vertical. -- that

:22:26. > :22:35.the big event riders Masters competition up in Blair. He has been

:22:36. > :22:43.in flying form. Will he go for the gate? May, T will go for the Oxo. He

:22:44. > :22:50.gets the shot to the triple brush. This is a very positive ride that

:22:51. > :23:06.you would expect from him, coming to the biggest of the fences. And a big

:23:07. > :23:11.oxer again. Nicely pressing on. Well, the direct route, through the

:23:12. > :23:16.splash, the quick left hand turn. For strides to that corner and then

:23:17. > :23:21.another false strides to the skinny brush but at any point the riders

:23:22. > :23:28.can change their mind and take the longer all turn the tips. Lots of

:23:29. > :23:34.options here. The features of the two courses we have seen recently,

:23:35. > :23:39.one at the Rio Olympics and now here right Burghley, both providing lots

:23:40. > :23:45.of options for the riders, they have really got to think. At the moment,

:23:46. > :23:49.only has taken the longer option, and he is safely through. He is

:23:50. > :23:59.still clear and now two thirds of the way round this cross-country

:24:00. > :24:06.course. Now we are on to the evergreen Andrew Hoyte, and

:24:07. > :24:21.Rutherglen. A big raging horse, the huge strides, should not find this

:24:22. > :24:26.tricky. That is quite a long to stride, and Rutherglen has two

:24:27. > :24:30.choices. The favoured one seems to be the one stride through the

:24:31. > :24:37.brushes, but there is also the left-hand route and it is what the

:24:38. > :24:42.riders prefer. Here is Oliver Townend, coming down towards

:24:43. > :24:47.discovery Valley. Body position is important to because the next fence

:24:48. > :24:52.has got a very big drop, and they are going to get into the air. He

:24:53. > :24:56.takes up the line and that is very well ridden indeed. Good body

:24:57. > :25:06.position and he did not waste any time at all. The farm, for Andrew

:25:07. > :25:12.Hoy. Interestingly enough, he has taken the gateway and rather than

:25:13. > :25:17.the corner. He has the choice here, right or left, he is now joining the

:25:18. > :25:21.quick route. And then down to the big corner, and he makes it look

:25:22. > :25:28.rather easy and again does not waste much. Maybe a couple of seconds,

:25:29. > :25:37.three at most. Back now to the cross rails. Not the quickest in the

:25:38. > :25:43.world, keeping up a relentless stride, he does not waste any time,

:25:44. > :25:48.in preparing or leaving, elbows going as he heads now, to the FBI

:25:49. > :25:57.classic leap. A big crop down, for two metres. For the slightly

:25:58. > :26:05.undulating ground. Still making as good a time as he can. As we

:26:06. > :26:12.thought, it looks as if the optimum time of 1111 is not going to be

:26:13. > :26:17.easy. Rutherglen at the Rolex complex, they are concerned that

:26:18. > :26:22.this ditch, it is not really clearly defined. Interestingly enough,

:26:23. > :26:27.showing all of his experience and he's taking the alternative to the

:26:28. > :26:31.left, the bounce over the ditch, and then the shorthand to the

:26:32. > :26:39.alternative corner. Wasting again a few seconds, it is safe and clean.

:26:40. > :26:49.Now Oliver Townend, the first rider we are seeing. Coming back towards

:26:50. > :26:56.the arena. Over the sun and the moon, and he is still galloping on.

:26:57. > :27:05.Looking back at the Shade wary. -- looking perhaps a shade weary. And

:27:06. > :27:11.doublet is coming to this anniversary splash. Quite an

:27:12. > :27:17.intimidating setup, for her first Burghley. And a clever horse, who

:27:18. > :27:20.banked that brush in the middle, he has got his ears pricked and he is

:27:21. > :27:28.having a look, you could be a bit more attacking perhaps. But she is

:27:29. > :27:36.through it and that is a good confidence booster for the rest of

:27:37. > :27:42.the round. Oliver Townend, and blue coming back into the arena. He is

:27:43. > :27:51.already going to go into the time penalties. A penalty for every

:27:52. > :27:58.second over, in 11 11. You can see the horse they're just looking a

:27:59. > :28:04.shade wary. So the turn actually, for Andrew Hoy. It would be quite

:28:05. > :28:10.interesting, to see if the horses get any drag on their legs. Over the

:28:11. > :28:15.last few years, the water has been quite shallow. He gets a bit of a

:28:16. > :28:22.bending line, that is fine. That is beautifully executed. He made that

:28:23. > :28:28.looked like an exercise at home. Here he comes, it is one from home,

:28:29. > :28:36.he is nearly a minute over. And of course he is adding to his dressage

:28:37. > :28:42.school all of the way. He is safe, clear, 75.9 is the target now set,

:28:43. > :29:02.by Britain's Oliver Townend and, his horse. Doublet, imaging's pony club

:29:03. > :29:06.championship horse. A 4-star burley horse just could have been a bit

:29:07. > :29:11.more positive up that hill. Perhaps showing a little bit of a lack of

:29:12. > :29:18.experience. She has got quite far around the course already. Hast to

:29:19. > :29:23.put that stop behind her, get on the rest of the course. Now she has to

:29:24. > :29:28.go the long route. Jumping this alternative from the final element,

:29:29. > :29:32.it is impossible to turn left, there is no room to go through. Riders

:29:33. > :29:44.have to do another circle around the trees. Wasting lots of precious

:29:45. > :29:49.seconds and valuable energy. You can see here, getting up the hill, there

:29:50. > :30:00.isn't really a stride here. Not enough impulsion. Here now, it is

:30:01. > :30:05.Sarah Bullimore. Representing Great Britain a number of times in the new

:30:06. > :30:11.Nations cup. Scrambles over that, that did not look very positive

:30:12. > :30:16.Sarah. Quite successfully, but without really hitting the high

:30:17. > :30:22.spots. Had a good dressage. She is in with a chance if she can make the

:30:23. > :30:33.most of it. Now back to the anniversary splash.

:30:34. > :30:38.A big drop here. Sarah pushing on. Back over. Just loses the body

:30:39. > :30:55.position a bit. Will she go left or right? The right

:30:56. > :31:03.route has been more popular. Needs to be more positive if she's going

:31:04. > :31:16.to feature on this course. This is quite a tricky fence. But nothing

:31:17. > :31:20.for them as they come to this leaflet drop, which doesn't look any

:31:21. > :31:25.smaller as the years go by. And there is no fence at the top, so

:31:26. > :31:42.there is not a lot of setting up. Having said that, it looks like that

:31:43. > :31:46.skinny is very narrow. Oliver, you put the leap into Cotesmore Leap.

:31:47. > :31:56.That was incredible. Yes, he didn't travel like I had hoped. But he kept

:31:57. > :32:12.going for me because he was finding it hard work. Sarah Bullimore,

:32:13. > :32:18.coming to the dairy farm big jump. Ooh, and the horse slips. Sarah does

:32:19. > :32:30.a good job of getting it back online. Here is the double Burghley

:32:31. > :32:48.winner, Andrew Hoy, home on the first of his two writes, Rutherglen.

:32:49. > :33:01.He sets a new standard. It is a nice jump over the ditch for Reve Du

:33:02. > :33:08.Rouet. Now into the box, Bettina Hoy. She won her European individual

:33:09. > :33:13.title here in 1997. She has been a lady at the top of her sport. The

:33:14. > :33:18.winter the Olympics in 1984 in Los Angeles, but this is a horse that is

:33:19. > :33:28.taking her right back to the top. She was in the European

:33:29. > :33:34.Championships last year. The rather tricky trout hatchery for Sarah. It

:33:35. > :33:42.is deep in the middle, easy to lose balance. Takes the flag up, but that

:33:43. > :33:53.doesn't matter. She was inside the flag. Well ridden. Bettina Hoy, the

:33:54. > :33:59.rain pouring down now. The going started off good. I think a lot of

:34:00. > :34:00.the ground will take this rain is Bettina comes to the first of the

:34:01. > :34:19.water complexes. This is a very capable horse at

:34:20. > :34:27.cross-country. As they had to the Anniversary Splash, they are in a

:34:28. > :34:35.very good place after dressage. In second place, 34.2, so this is a

:34:36. > :34:51.crucial round. Whoa, Bettina has it very tight. Very quick reaction.

:34:52. > :34:55.Good recovery. How does this course rate for you?

:34:56. > :35:01.There has been so much chat about whether it is hard or not as hard.

:35:02. > :35:08.Without doubt, it starts at fence one and it doesn't finish until you

:35:09. > :35:13.get the last fence. I slips between fence five A and five B, but

:35:14. > :35:20.Rutherglen was very good, got his feet and jumped into the water

:35:21. > :35:22.complex nicely. There is no fence on this course that you can

:35:23. > :35:39.underestimate, or it will end in tears. A great dressage test from

:35:40. > :35:47.Bettina. A great positive attitude. Bettina did a good job, rode

:35:48. > :35:51.forward. The horse was like a pony. Now one of the best cross-country

:35:52. > :35:52.combinations in the world. They finished fourth individually at the

:35:53. > :36:19.Worlds. It is Jonelle Price. This could be the one to watch. Very

:36:20. > :36:22.fast. Many will have been surprised that she didn't write this was for

:36:23. > :36:24.New Zealand in the Olympics. New Zealand just missed out on a bronze

:36:25. > :36:45.medal, team-wise. On dressage and 48.5. You can see

:36:46. > :36:57.just how slick this horse is on his feet, Jonelle with a great guy. -- a

:36:58. > :37:01.great guy. Mark Philip, the course designer, made quite a feature of

:37:02. > :37:11.the village green over the years he has developed it. They have the

:37:12. > :37:15.choice here of the gate. He leads his back legs on that. Just wasn't

:37:16. > :37:21.quite punchy enough. Bettina has a look over her shoulder just to see

:37:22. > :37:25.whether she has left that friends intact. If you break that pin, that

:37:26. > :37:43.is 11 penalties. She was having a quick check to see if it was OK.

:37:44. > :38:01.A jump through that combination. And already setting out very positively

:38:02. > :38:12.and comfortably. Designer has shown us how good he is with his footwork.

:38:13. > :38:20.Very supple. Quite a wide term. Ooh, six strides to that corner. I don't

:38:21. > :38:25.think that was the intention. That extra sixth stride caused a bit of a

:38:26. > :38:33.hiccup for Designer, but Bettina quickly recovers and wastes no time.

:38:34. > :38:38.Sarah Bullimore, coming for home to the Land Rover finale fence, the

:38:39. > :38:46.final fence. They have gone well. You can see the seconds ticking

:38:47. > :38:49.away, but Reve Du Rouet is a horse has been owned by Christopher

:38:50. > :38:54.Gillespie and that is one of her best performances across the big

:38:55. > :39:00.international level we are seeing here, 71.1. At the moment, she

:39:01. > :39:12.sneaks into the lead for Great Britain. That was interesting,

:39:13. > :39:15.probably the best combination the world at the cross-country at the

:39:16. > :39:27.moment, this pair. That was not the perfect spot, but Classic Moet is

:39:28. > :39:32.showing all the scope in the world. And then galloping down the hill to

:39:33. > :39:38.that dairy farm. Never looks in a hurry, but covers the ground so

:39:39. > :39:44.quickly. And as you see in the timing, one of the fastest sofa. She

:39:45. > :39:56.is five seconds up on the clock. Didn't quite make that turn, and

:39:57. > :40:01.demolishes the decoration! Someone will rescue those potatoes, I'm

:40:02. > :40:04.sure. She was five seconds up on the clock, but I would reckon she has

:40:05. > :40:15.wasted at least ten seconds having to go the long route. The horse got

:40:16. > :40:21.a little bit key in there. Jonelle never really got her I on that

:40:22. > :40:24.direct route. I don't think that was planned, I think that was just

:40:25. > :40:33.making the necessary adjustment when things don't go quite right. Now

:40:34. > :40:44.back with Bettina Hoy. She's second after dressage. The time does look

:40:45. > :40:48.very difficult. And with this pouring rain, one wonders whether

:40:49. > :40:58.anyone is going to get inside. Coming around to the leaflet. -- the

:40:59. > :41:05.leaf pit. One or two horses have already looked at that leaf pit. But

:41:06. > :41:12.not Bettina. She is looking to set a standard and say, come on, catch me

:41:13. > :41:24.if you can. She loves this course and she won that European title here

:41:25. > :41:34.back in 1997. Just pops over the ditch. Dutiful jump over the corner.

:41:35. > :41:43.-- beautiful jump. And they deserved pat for the horse. Quickly back in

:41:44. > :42:04.her rhythm. This horse is still full of running. Now Bill Levett and

:42:05. > :42:12.Improvise. Bill and his goggles, a bit like Biggles on a horse. But he

:42:13. > :42:23.looking determined. Very quickly out of the water. Bettina Hoy. This is

:42:24. > :42:33.going to be close to the lead, we think, because she is now only 38

:42:34. > :42:40.seconds over the time. Andrew Hoy is in the lead, but I think this is

:42:41. > :42:46.going to be the new leader. 53.7, 48 seconds over. That leading time is

:42:47. > :42:51.getting better and better. That is interesting. Jonelle chose not to go

:42:52. > :42:55.into that water splash. I did look at that when walking the course, and

:42:56. > :43:04.I think it is a good move. It gives you a better line into the water.

:43:05. > :43:07.Fantastic through there. Because she didn't go into that water splash,

:43:08. > :43:10.she got a straighter approach to the drop. Perfectly in balance, riding

:43:11. > :43:32.forward. Stupendous jump. I am so proud of my horse. I didn't

:43:33. > :43:36.give him the easiest ride to start with. I felt a bit intimidated,

:43:37. > :43:39.although I haven't heard much. But from what it looked like and from

:43:40. > :43:44.what I heard from some people whispering, it rode quite badly. I

:43:45. > :43:53.almost got unseated a couple of times, but he just keeps going. He

:43:54. > :44:00.is the most amazing horse. Now Bill Levett and Improvise. The

:44:01. > :44:04.Australians won the team bronze medal, just pipping New Zealand in

:44:05. > :44:13.Rio. This man wants to make his mark. Improvise is an Irish bred

:44:14. > :44:21.12-year-old owned by Elizabeth Murdoch, any Levett and Ali Butler.

:44:22. > :44:30.We are getting towards the latter part of the course. She is one of

:44:31. > :44:34.the quickest at this point. Beautifully balanced. It is so

:44:35. > :44:39.important that the riders are in the correct position over that middle

:44:40. > :44:43.element to make the final turn. Now a 50-year-old from the United States

:44:44. > :44:58.of America. Had four children are decided eventing is what she wants

:44:59. > :45:04.to do. She wants to get round here. Her task is to get round this

:45:05. > :45:16.course. That is her dream. The rain is still pouring down.

:45:17. > :45:29.Look how quickly Jonelle gets back into speed, motoring up. No wonder

:45:30. > :45:36.they are the quickest in the world. Bill Levett, just before halfway on

:45:37. > :45:44.the course. He has done well. The ditches jumped better than many

:45:45. > :45:52.thought. He is down on the clock, but he is pushing on.

:45:53. > :46:05.Coming into the cross rails, in the perfect spot. The for showing his

:46:06. > :46:16.scope, jumping the 50 class, we know he has got the jump, but at 54 years

:46:17. > :46:21.old, this is quite a thing for Bunny Sexton. She has already had a run

:46:22. > :46:28.out at the Maltese brush, she has got to get over this. No, very sadly

:46:29. > :46:36.that is a technical elimination for Bunny Sexton, such a lovely person

:46:37. > :46:41.and a sad way to end the event. Classic Moet, I don't think he will

:46:42. > :46:50.quite get there but he will be the quickest so far, only four seconds

:46:51. > :46:57.left, that is the last, and Classic Moet has got another brilliant

:46:58. > :47:03.display, with his Kiwi jockey. And is the new leader at the top of the

:47:04. > :47:09.leaderboard. Well, brilliant, paper funnel and second supreme. She's

:47:10. > :47:15.just back, she is a little bit frustrated that she got run out at

:47:16. > :47:23.Rio. Here to prove things right, and get it sorted out, she is looking

:47:24. > :47:30.very determined. This is the Pippa Funnel that we know and respect. She

:47:31. > :47:36.gets her eye on the line and pushes on. She is certainly looking

:47:37. > :47:42.determined. And a good gallop, this horse is not the best in the

:47:43. > :47:47.dressage but very positive and gutsy in dressage, and that is enormous,

:47:48. > :47:56.and because it is on rising ground, the horses are jumping it ever said

:47:57. > :48:02.-- it effortlessly. Of course paper won the Rolex Grand Slam for the

:48:03. > :48:16.first time ever in 2003 and she would love to get into the reckoning

:48:17. > :48:22.again. Do you know we have all been saying, David take any notice. You

:48:23. > :48:27.absolutely nailed it, well done. Yes I had an hunt planned thing on the

:48:28. > :48:33.dairy mound, the weather is going to play a part, and then I knew I had

:48:34. > :48:39.my work cut out from that moment on. She was magic and she was digging so

:48:40. > :48:53.deep, such a gutsy mare. It was the nominal. Now, some great fun all

:48:54. > :48:59.around the world. One of the top, picks up the knitting, and the rain,

:49:00. > :49:07.what a difficult horse, and he really wants to get around. And

:49:08. > :49:12.Pippa Funnel coming towards the dairy farm, we saw Ripper and Tina

:49:13. > :49:22.discussing this fence. She is going straight. A good spot up there, gets

:49:23. > :49:27.an extra short stride into the middle element and then stands off a

:49:28. > :49:33.mile. She looks as though she is aghast being at the camera, letting

:49:34. > :49:40.us know that she is all right. Still it rains, as it comes the trees, to

:49:41. > :49:48.the wall, Bill Thompson designed the course right from the start many

:49:49. > :49:52.years ago, including 1966 when the world's way here. Celebrating 50

:49:53. > :50:02.years of the sport. Nearly a hick up. There you see just how far down

:50:03. > :50:08.it is. Bill sensibly having just lost his position picks up and

:50:09. > :50:13.chooses to go the long route which is a sensible position. Improvised.

:50:14. > :50:27.He is behind the clock though, the Australian. Now we have the

:50:28. > :50:31.incredible Sir Mark Todd. Coming to the first of the water complexes. We

:50:32. > :50:39.have seen one or two horses hitting that. But a beautiful jumper. And

:50:40. > :50:44.what is interesting to see here, Mark doesn't look as though he is

:50:45. > :50:50.hurrying, he has got a great length of stride, keeping a good rhythm,

:50:51. > :50:57.wasting not a second, and not fussing about the preparations.

:50:58. > :51:05.Always thinking positively forward. Sir Mark Todd, five times winner of

:51:06. > :51:15.this title, he would love another, though. Which way is he going to go?

:51:16. > :51:25.Picking up the left-hand route, it really is just a question of which

:51:26. > :51:34.way the rider prefers coming out. On his second horse, already well

:51:35. > :51:37.placed in the leaderboard, and his very good horse Samuel Thomas II.

:51:38. > :51:43.They have got a good record, they had been there that long, and

:51:44. > :51:48.another positive ride. My word, that is as well as anyone and that shows

:51:49. > :51:52.you how it should be done, not losing a hundreds of a second. And

:51:53. > :52:00.Bill Levitt and improvise coming towards the end, wasting a bit of

:52:01. > :52:06.time. He has been very punchy and positive, really kicking on, look at

:52:07. > :52:13.the time, already 45 seconds over. Clear and still pushing to the end.

:52:14. > :52:27.62.5, says he will come into the leaderboard. -- so he will. And it

:52:28. > :52:34.is Kiwi Jonelle Price, and Classic Moet, just ahead. So, at the

:52:35. > :52:46.hat-trick, through that splash, takes a good turn. Oh no! Get up,

:52:47. > :52:52.sit up. How frustrating is that? She is still smiling, she is an

:52:53. > :52:57.incredible lady. Is that my imagination? Does that water look

:52:58. > :52:59.deeper, with the rain? You are right, we have had torrential rain,

:53:00. > :53:09.you can see, paper -- Pippa Funnel in good balance and

:53:10. > :53:15.control and does nothing wrong, gets a good jumping. Lands well, and

:53:16. > :53:19.actually it is the stride after landing that tracks the horse down,

:53:20. > :53:32.and is a margin -- and does a marvellous effort to

:53:33. > :53:37.stay up but sadly Pippa Funnel exits stage left. Believe me, Pippa Funnel

:53:38. > :53:40.is not the only want to have fallen foul, there has been plenty of

:53:41. > :54:48.action. Just watch this. well the good news is that all

:54:49. > :54:55.horses and riders came back. All got quite a tumble, but he was back last

:54:56. > :54:59.night. Oliver had a brain fried on the first horse and he's giving this

:55:00. > :55:05.second horse a peach of a ride -- had a brilliant first ride. And the

:55:06. > :55:16.control of the balance justifies how difficult that is. The night, Sir

:55:17. > :55:21.Mark Todd. The man who was voted the equestrian of the 20th century and

:55:22. > :55:27.still had 16 shows how it should be done. He is at the dairy farm, key

:55:28. > :55:36.is struggling, he is going to have two come around, the brakes are run.

:55:37. > :55:43.-- heart on. He is a man who has won this title five times. Two Olympic

:55:44. > :55:49.back-to-back gold medals. And still, still giving a great show. Sadly his

:55:50. > :55:54.show-jumping in Rio, just meant that New Zealand mistake team bronze. Of

:55:55. > :55:59.course he did get a team bronze and he is a man who retired after the

:56:00. > :56:07.2000 Olympics in Sydney and then came back and showed us still what

:56:08. > :56:21.he can do in 2008 and on. Over the Rolex, on he goes. And so now, for

:56:22. > :56:26.France, good dressage at 46. Lying in 40th

:56:27. > :56:39.14th position, lost a bit of impulsion. Settling down, getting

:56:40. > :56:45.back into the rhythm. He was persuaded to come back, by his past

:56:46. > :56:53.owners, back into the sport. He has shown just what he is capable of.

:56:54. > :56:59.And, he is a great trainer, as he has shown exactly what the

:57:00. > :57:03.trilateral is all about. Kristina Cook and star witness, as she said

:57:04. > :57:07.earlier perhaps not the best in the dressage stage, but she has been

:57:08. > :57:17.pretty consistent and reliable across the country. The horse,

:57:18. > :57:25.three-year-old, proved to be, a worthy purchase. Not the best stride

:57:26. > :57:33.up to that step, gets him back into the gear. Britain wants some good

:57:34. > :57:39.news after Rio, they have got to look to their laurels, the rest of

:57:40. > :57:44.the world. This man could be showing us the confidence needed. He is back

:57:45. > :57:51.to form, this is ride number two of three. He is at the last, safely

:57:52. > :57:57.over, it is a much quicker around. By Samuel Thomas II. That is going

:57:58. > :58:09.to bring him up again. 63, he has got one right to come. This

:58:10. > :58:15.attractive grey horse. With Cedric Lyard. He had a little bit of a

:58:16. > :58:19.scratch or two, interestingly enough, you can see it is broken off

:58:20. > :58:24.the bottom, seeing it flapping around but it does not affect the

:58:25. > :58:28.horse, you can see that Cedric is looking at it and trying to pick it

:58:29. > :58:34.up, but it does not affect the horse in any way. Good dressage, he has

:58:35. > :58:41.gone the long wait, at the dairy farm and he is behind the clock but

:58:42. > :58:46.he still pressing on. He now lives near Albright in Wiltshire, he was

:58:47. > :58:51.of course the team manager for the Brazilian squad in Rio and he is a

:58:52. > :58:57.highly respected trainer. There will be plenty of that for him, riding on

:58:58. > :59:03.over the little triple bars. He would love to finish in the top ten,

:59:04. > :59:10.he would love to win for sure. He loves to be the hind the clock in

:59:11. > :59:16.2016. The rain is still pouring down, as they come down to the Land

:59:17. > :59:21.Rover dairy farm. Talking about the fence, before you ride it. That

:59:22. > :59:27.added pressure. They talked about what should be perfect, they don't

:59:28. > :59:33.want to get it wrong. A little bit of a wobble, she holds her line.

:59:34. > :59:39.Such a gutsy little horse. Keeps his ears pricked and wants to get on

:59:40. > :59:44.with it. France, the Olympic gold medallist in Rio. He was in that

:59:45. > :59:49.gold medal team. He was in that squad for the world Equestrian

:59:50. > :59:56.games. And is well placed here, just seventh in this competition. On the

:59:57. > :59:59.grey horse. Trying over that corner. Gets a long line, he is away. He's

:00:00. > :00:09.good form. Coming into the main arena for the

:00:10. > :00:18.Return from Rio grandstand, Mark Todd. A lovely stride. Again,

:00:19. > :00:22.brilliant balance. Kicking on out of the arena. He knows time is tight,

:00:23. > :00:32.he will probably get time faults but he is trying to get to the finish as

:00:33. > :00:37.quickly as possible. Kristina Cook at a difficult

:00:38. > :00:43.preparation, she spent three weeks in a Rio, not only as a reserve

:00:44. > :00:47.rider but then doing a great job for BBC Radio 5 live. Would have had a

:00:48. > :00:53.difficult build-up, but they looked to be working as one, looking to

:00:54. > :00:58.make up for that 40th equal place after dressage. The time is looking

:00:59. > :01:01.pretty quick. Still no one inside that optimum time. I doubt if

:01:02. > :01:05.anybody will know. I should think it highly unlikely,

:01:06. > :01:12.especially with all the rain we are getting now. Certainly Mark Todd is

:01:13. > :01:16.pushing answer the finish, but he is already way over the line. Having to

:01:17. > :01:20.take the long roots did not help him. He did say it is not the

:01:21. > :01:27.fastest horse in the world. But the best rider in the world, certainly,

:01:28. > :01:34.has shaved off the seconds. 42 seconds over, third position at the

:01:35. > :01:38.moment. Beginning to look very good for New Zealand on this

:01:39. > :01:51.cross-country day, which is having its effect. Jonelle Price is out in

:01:52. > :01:59.fronts. Cedric is coming down to Discovery Valley. That Thompson 's

:02:00. > :02:04.wall is a massive fence. -- that Thomson's Wall. In its own right it

:02:05. > :02:11.is a very big fence. You want to get six strides and a good one close

:02:12. > :02:19.into that second fence. He lent back and wasn't perfect balance to make

:02:20. > :02:32.that tone. -- he was in perfect balance to make that turn. Kristina

:02:33. > :02:40.Cook on Star Witness. Tina said sub. Very strong. Oh, my word! What a

:02:41. > :02:43.recovery. She lost a shoe. She has picked up the rhythm. What a

:02:44. > :02:48.brilliant piece of cross-country riding. That is why she is regarded

:02:49. > :02:56.as one of the best ladies anywhere in the world at cross-country.

:02:57. > :03:01.You could see a shoe flying past as she jumped the corner. There it is.

:03:02. > :03:05.Tina did a brilliant job to hold that was together and jump that

:03:06. > :03:10.corner and not come off on the slip of the term.

:03:11. > :03:19.Here's Cedric Lyard, flying for home. He was well in it after

:03:20. > :03:24.dressage. He is now 25 seconds over. This wonderful house has seen some

:03:25. > :03:29.magic. We are seeing it once again as he stopped the clock. 34 seconds

:03:30. > :03:36.over, going forth for France with 59.6.

:03:37. > :03:42.The words are commentators used were classy, showing all this experience,

:03:43. > :03:47.how did it feel for you? I had a really, really good ride. I was

:03:48. > :03:52.always a bit worried, because he is not the fastest thing, I did not

:03:53. > :03:59.know how he would cope, but he kept trying and I had a really good ride.

:04:00. > :04:05.COMMENTATOR: Tina Cook coming into the final quarter. Not much more

:04:06. > :04:08.than 500 metres from home. Star Witness is fixed. Very much matching

:04:09. > :04:17.their great performance last year, looking to have plenty of running.

:04:18. > :04:22.Sam Griffiths and Happy Times. Have a look at that, he has not got his

:04:23. > :04:30.foot in the stirrups because Mr Obama is broken, the footrest has

:04:31. > :04:37.completely gone. -- because it is broken. Can he sit tight for the

:04:38. > :04:42.entire course? Will he keep going? I will be seriously impressed if he

:04:43. > :04:47.wants to keep going. It has been raining, his saddle is slippery, he

:04:48. > :04:54.only has one stirrup on. That is one for the children at home to watch.

:04:55. > :05:01.Look at the balance and control. Here comes Tina, would Star Witness,

:05:02. > :05:09.driving to the finish. -- with Star Witness. She has had some wonderful

:05:10. > :05:15.owners over the years, they have had great fun, and now she is coming

:05:16. > :05:20.into direct lead with show-jumping to come to. Seventh place, 64.9,

:05:21. > :05:27.that could be one of the best British competitors at Burghley.

:05:28. > :05:31.Sam is still going, he has his foot into the leather. Perhaps not the

:05:32. > :05:39.safest thing, but at least he is in balance. Still not happy, his foot

:05:40. > :05:44.is getting tied up. Now he has lost the other stirrup. I can't believe

:05:45. > :05:50.he can continue. I think you are right. He very definitely led

:05:51. > :05:56.Australia to that team bronze in Rio, he almost won an individual

:05:57. > :06:03.medal as well. His performances, I think, probably his best ever in

:06:04. > :06:11.Rio. Credit to him. Frustrating for Sam Griffiths, now

:06:12. > :06:26.we have the rare row. Probably his best ever. -- now we have Nereo.

:06:27. > :06:30.Great to see him back to his best after that fractured neck. Although

:06:31. > :06:34.it was considerably more serious than that. Andrew said he would not

:06:35. > :06:39.come back if he could not be competitive, he has certainly proved

:06:40. > :06:42.he is back in the groove. Nereo one of the faster horses across the

:06:43. > :06:45.country. If anybody will get the time, it will be Andrew. This horse

:06:46. > :07:00.has got a massive stride. It is one jumping effort less, but

:07:01. > :07:05.the horse gets its eye on the step up on the right-hand side as it

:07:06. > :07:10.approaches. We have seen one or two get a little bit confused. But

:07:11. > :07:19.Andrew holds his line perfectly and makes nothing of that huge slate

:07:20. > :07:22.wagon up the hill. Capabilities cutting, considered one

:07:23. > :07:33.of the softer combinations we have had over the last few years, but it

:07:34. > :07:39.has taken a few scalps already. And Andrew has a brilliant jumping,

:07:40. > :07:44.sailing through it. This horse does not always tried our

:07:45. > :07:49.hardest. It is flat work, it does not always want to try that hard.

:07:50. > :07:56.Bertie is magic, he even makes me look fast. Talkers through the

:07:57. > :08:00.moment at the Trout Hatchery? He jumped in well. When he tripped over

:08:01. > :08:05.is going to go up the step and go down, but when he tripped I was

:08:06. > :08:09.aiming to the corner. So I thought, well, I will have to jump the

:08:10. > :08:16.corner. When he was slipping, you had to be slightly cautious. He lost

:08:17. > :08:20.a shoe, did you notice? I thought he probably had, I felt the odd slip

:08:21. > :08:28.further around the corner, you do not want to slip and get eliminated.

:08:29. > :08:33.Andrew Nicholson five-time willing here. Three of them off the mark,

:08:34. > :08:38.2012, 13 and 14. He will be trying to make it a six, and Joy William

:08:39. > :08:43.Fox-Pitt, the biggest number of wins, William has six overall.

:08:44. > :08:52.Classic Nicholson with his horse that has taken him to a bronze medal

:08:53. > :08:57.in London for New Zealand. From one Kiwi to another, Caroline

:08:58. > :09:05.Powell. Caroline did not have the best start to the year. She had a

:09:06. > :09:13.pretty seriously badly broken leg, but she is back on form. Onwards And

:09:14. > :09:18.Upwards has had his problems, but is back on good form.

:09:19. > :09:23.This man has really measured his recovery since that dramatic fall

:09:24. > :09:32.when he virtually broke his neck a year ago. When he won again, the big

:09:33. > :09:37.class at the Barbary International, it showed that he was back at his

:09:38. > :09:42.best. Check on the watch, he knows that he is right in touch.

:09:43. > :09:53.The Anniversary Splash from Caroline. And the ground here is in

:09:54. > :09:59.perfect condition. Even with the rain, the guys here at Burghley have

:10:00. > :10:04.done an amazing job with a footing. Caroline looks as if she is heading

:10:05. > :10:13.for the left route as well. Wasting not a second, giving a quick patter

:10:14. > :10:18.to Onwards And Upwards. Andrew Nicholson with his young family,

:10:19. > :10:24.watching dad at the track. A keen fence, body position is very

:10:25. > :10:29.important. Lovely, strong as an ox. Pixel for zorb, get the line. Oh,

:10:30. > :10:35.lovely riding. Wasting not a centimetre.

:10:36. > :10:42.The Cottesmore Leap the Caroline. They should be bread and butter,

:10:43. > :10:46.this fence, this combination. Interestingly, there are quite a few

:10:47. > :10:53.horses put five strides in between these fences. Full Onwards And

:10:54. > :10:57.Upwards it was assured four. Over the Thomson's Wall and into

:10:58. > :11:05.Discovery Valley read for Andrew Nicholson and Nereo. He third

:11:06. > :11:11.overnight. -- he was third overnight. Andrew was not as quick

:11:12. > :11:15.Classic Moet and Jonelle Price. But he looks to have gotten odd seconds

:11:16. > :11:23.back, maybe. The Dairy Farm, an umbrella blowing

:11:24. > :11:24.inside out. It could be enough to distract the horse, but not this

:11:25. > :11:36.partnership. Good striking, gets well to the

:11:37. > :11:43.right-hand side. A brilliant jump back. Phenomenal. They have not had

:11:44. > :11:50.the best of years in the past, but they look back to their best.

:11:51. > :11:58.Coming to the Rolex Combination. This tricky ditch.

:11:59. > :12:03.No problem at all. It is so important to keep the horse plus my

:12:04. > :12:10.confidence and rewarded. They know when they have done a good job.

:12:11. > :12:20.Andrew Nicholson for New Zealand, onto the little treble rails. Has

:12:21. > :12:24.Nereo still got plenty left? Andrew Hoy, The Blue Frontier. He

:12:25. > :12:35.had a brilliant rider on Rutherglen earlier. -- a brilliant ride on. A

:12:36. > :12:42.lovely expression on the horse. Ears pricked, bright eyed. Back in

:12:43. > :12:51.the ring. Counting down the clock. He will not get inside. Nobody

:12:52. > :12:58.inside 11.11. Can he get close enough? Show-jumping course four can

:12:59. > :13:16.be pretty dramatic. That was as good as anyone. Not in a

:13:17. > :13:23.hurry, balanced, organised. Perfect. The clock ticking away,

:13:24. > :13:27.already in the red, 0.4 for every second that you seek ticking away.

:13:28. > :13:32.Andrew Nicholson will be right up there. He can't at the moment take

:13:33. > :13:37.the lead at the end of cross-country. Will he be close

:13:38. > :13:43.enough, the question is. Stops the club, 30 seconds over, 47.2, the new

:13:44. > :13:51.leader at the moment but, of course, the overnight leader is still to

:13:52. > :13:58.come, Christopher Burton. Well, Dairy Farm full Blue Frontier.

:13:59. > :14:04.Rather keen and enthusiastic about life. Interestingly enough, Andrew

:14:05. > :14:08.goes the same route as he did on Rutherglen, jumps as opposed about

:14:09. > :14:19.big corner, but then he goes in the direct route. Exactly like

:14:20. > :14:25.Rutherglen. Poetry in motion. Angie, such a smile on your face.

:14:26. > :14:29.You are into the lead. -- Andrew, such as nylon your face. I am not as

:14:30. > :14:33.strong with my hands or legs as I used to be, a couple of times I felt

:14:34. > :14:38.that I did not have been of contact to do the tens, but he does it

:14:39. > :14:46.himself. -- that I did not have enough contact.

:14:47. > :14:50.This horse has had time off and looks back to its best. Caroline

:14:51. > :14:53.broke her leg earlier this year, she has had quite a time on the

:14:54. > :15:03.sidelines but they look a good partnership around this testing Mark

:15:04. > :15:06.Phillips course. Good body position, but she does not take the route I

:15:07. > :15:12.would have expected and a second is wasted. Taking a quick check on the

:15:13. > :15:18.watch. She is going for the clear. Not really trying to get as close to

:15:19. > :15:25.the optimum time she could. For New Zealand again, Tim Price and

:15:26. > :15:30.Ringwood Sky Boy. A good dressage test, 38.9.

:15:31. > :15:39.Second-place coming into the cross-country.

:15:40. > :15:45.Had an unfortunate slip on the turn in Rio and fell on the flat. So it

:15:46. > :15:49.was quite gutsy to bring the horse here, but he said the horse was in

:15:50. > :15:53.great form and the return journey took nothing out of him. Certainly

:15:54. > :16:09.looked good in the dressage and looks positive here.

:16:10. > :16:20.Just left a bit of a right front leg. Caught a need on the way up.

:16:21. > :16:25.But recovered quickly. Looking good for the Kiwis, can the Australians

:16:26. > :16:33.forced their way back? Andrew Hoy, the last one here in 2004. And oh my

:16:34. > :16:40.word! The horse landed, the undercarriage didn't lock and down

:16:41. > :16:44.they went. This horse, that originally came from Sandra Alford,

:16:45. > :16:52.the world champion, and sadly, looking so good and then out they

:16:53. > :16:57.go. Drama. Yes that was a bit of a surprise, they did a good jump in, I

:16:58. > :17:01.think the water is getting deeper but was never really landed

:17:02. > :17:08.properly. Then, the drag on the water made it impossible to recover.

:17:09. > :17:14.Caroline Powell, another Kiwi in the top ten, 41 seconds over. Almost

:17:15. > :17:19.inside on the last. Onwards and upwards, it is a combination, at

:17:20. > :17:26.their best, right up there. Caroline who has been part of the New Zealand

:17:27. > :17:32.success in the last ten years. Fifth place, 59.4, four Caroline Powell of

:17:33. > :17:42.New Zealand. After that long gallop up, the Avenue, he made that looked

:17:43. > :17:47.like nothing. Terribly high. He just rattles the top of one or two of the

:17:48. > :17:52.fences, his attitude is brilliant, this horse. He wastes not a second.

:17:53. > :18:01.He is keeping up a really good read the message goes across the country.

:18:02. > :18:05.Once they get to that, Cottesmore leaping, it is down. So, they get a

:18:06. > :18:12.second wind and back into a good gallop. It is now impossible to make

:18:13. > :18:23.up any lost time -- it is now possible. Now is the time to do it.

:18:24. > :18:28.Well that was very impressive, he made that happen, it wasn't the

:18:29. > :18:37.perfect stride for that horse. Tim made it look more comfortable than I

:18:38. > :18:42.am sure it felt. And look at the time, he is only 11 seconds over

:18:43. > :18:48.soap it is possible, on a fast Wolves to make that up. He doesn't

:18:49. > :18:55.get a great stride, but the horse reads it well. And he looks

:18:56. > :19:00.absolutely straight as an arrow. At the start, the man who led after the

:19:01. > :19:07.dressage for Australia, Christopher Burton, with Nobilis 18. And this

:19:08. > :19:13.man, on the nine-year-old tatty no, could nearly have won an individual

:19:14. > :19:17.medal at the Rio Olympics. And this man will mean business. He was

:19:18. > :19:26.disappointed that he missed out on an individual medal, and he is on

:19:27. > :19:37.his way. Sky boy, with Tim, another one, to select the big oxer, rather

:19:38. > :19:41.than the other one, the oxer is actually easier to attack and

:19:42. > :19:47.friendlier. Just a little rattle at the top. Never scary, never worrying

:19:48. > :20:04.but has the odd rattle of his fences. Germany. The horse.

:20:05. > :20:18.And potential Badminton winners but they took a tumble there. This man a

:20:19. > :20:23.little bit like Jonelle Price, so fluid across the country. Really

:20:24. > :20:30.wastes no time, in presenting the horse to a fence or indeed getting

:20:31. > :20:43.away. Just watch it. Just kept a forward seat. And remaining

:20:44. > :20:55.positive. Is off to a good start and he would certainly be as fast as

:20:56. > :21:00.anyone at this point I feel. That was a high fence but he jumped it

:21:01. > :21:09.well, that is the wonderful to rain. It is why the judgment of offences

:21:10. > :21:14.are so important. It is what Burghley has been about since it

:21:15. > :21:19.started in 1967, he goes inside, I have not seen many do that at

:21:20. > :21:29.capability's cutting. And he jumps it beautifully. What can Tim do

:21:30. > :21:40.here? We have seen all sorts go wrong for a lot of good riders and

:21:41. > :21:45.good horses. Excellent. Really light on his feet, you can see to make a

:21:46. > :21:56.big effort to turn the horse, and the horse brilliant. Australia,

:21:57. > :22:02.Christopher Burton, very good dressage score. 13.2 is the leading

:22:03. > :22:09.score. Oliver Townend must be getting tired, this is his third

:22:10. > :22:16.round of the day. This is a horse that was ridden previously by Mary

:22:17. > :22:21.King. Very, very talented. Not always the easiest ride. Sky boy was

:22:22. > :22:30.the second here with Tim Price, out in front. Tim's talented wife,

:22:31. > :22:36.Jonelle Price, they would love to make 1-2. To this big events. In

:22:37. > :22:44.early position. So steady. That is great cross-country riding.

:22:45. > :22:49.Christopher Burton. Another one with some brilliant riding. The turn off

:22:50. > :22:56.that big oxer. Turning so quickly and so easily. Now he is lining up

:22:57. > :23:01.the gate, not very many that jumped the gate. Beautifully, carefully

:23:02. > :23:10.jumped. We have had one or two on the floor there. Christopher Burton,

:23:11. > :23:19.look at him, attitude, positive, concentration. Lovely jumper.

:23:20. > :23:28.Now, it is Oliver Townend, trying to keep the union Jack flying in 2016,

:23:29. > :23:33.it is a strong one. The Kiwis and the Australians are setting the

:23:34. > :23:39.pace. It is pretty quick, not too far down. Such a good supporter of

:23:40. > :23:46.the sport and another not presenting, from Oliver Townend. The

:23:47. > :23:50.clock kept ticking by. Oliver Townend on this course has got

:23:51. > :23:55.plenty of blood, but it is not easy shaking his head. It is strong, that

:23:56. > :24:02.makes it all the more difficult for him to ride this horse. Putting in a

:24:03. > :24:06.new partnership. We are coming to the climax of this brilliant day of

:24:07. > :24:12.cross-country. And we have got three of the best riders in the world. On

:24:13. > :24:20.the course at the moment. And Tim Price makes nothing of it, kicks on

:24:21. > :24:26.and gallops away. How is his time? The man that will be in his shadow

:24:27. > :24:31.is this man, the Australian Christopher Burton. And Nobilis 18.

:24:32. > :24:40.This is one of the key moments. Beautiful landing. Absolutely

:24:41. > :24:46.steady, it is ten out of 11. It is absolutely brilliant. Away they go.

:24:47. > :24:52.Ticking on to the final fence, Tim Price, sky boy, it looks as though

:24:53. > :24:58.he is finishing a race coming to the last. And look at the clock, he is

:24:59. > :25:04.already over the time but only just. One of the fastest times of the day.

:25:05. > :25:10.Has he done it, has he gone into the lead? He has indeed. Rather a soft

:25:11. > :25:20.smile. Yes, the first will be out there, his wife, Jonelle Price.

:25:21. > :25:25.Andrew Nicholson between her and Tim Price. And Christopher Burton, who

:25:26. > :25:30.first wrote the Olympics in 2012 in London and ever since then he has

:25:31. > :25:35.looked like a world number one. He is in discovery Valley, another key

:25:36. > :25:42.fence ahead of him. Beautiful position, rock position, get the

:25:43. > :25:48.line, wastes not a second. And now, coming to the track. Oliver visiting

:25:49. > :25:54.this for the third time today. He must be incredibly fit to be able to

:25:55. > :26:00.ride around here three times. Some of the riders have looked rather

:26:01. > :26:03.fatigued after one ride. And he is shouting again, he is telling the

:26:04. > :26:11.judges that he is going the long route. Not presenting, he is

:26:12. > :26:15.screening them, he has got a new nickname I think, "Not presenting".

:26:16. > :26:21.So he has now got the long route. It'll be interesting to see whether

:26:22. > :26:30.the judges accept "Not presenting those quite. Or whether they give

:26:31. > :26:34.him that 24 having a look. He is an amazing horse, he is not redesigned

:26:35. > :26:39.for this job but he has learned the job because he has an amazing mind

:26:40. > :26:43.so he's honest and genuine. I'm just thrilled because I had a bit of

:26:44. > :26:48.rough luck this year and this guy deserves better at Rio, and from the

:26:49. > :26:53.flight around he was just chipping around so nicely, and it was

:26:54. > :27:00.actually quite good fun. Four hours of brilliant sport and it will go to

:27:01. > :27:05.the wire because of this man. Christopher Nobilis 18, of

:27:06. > :27:11.Australia. The horse looks full of running. He is the overnight leader,

:27:12. > :27:15.with this lovely was. Could he be the overnight leader after the

:27:16. > :27:26.cross-country? A bit of a bang and clattered therefore him. He can get

:27:27. > :27:30.a bit keen and Inc is yes to get times, but he's looking very

:27:31. > :27:38.impressive. It jumped. Don't just click on! Oh no! Unbelievable. He

:27:39. > :27:42.has jumped that face quite beautifully, and just did not look

:27:43. > :27:49.as though it was ever going to happen. And sadly Oliver pulls up.

:27:50. > :27:52.Well, frustrating for him but he has had a bullet state onto horses and

:27:53. > :27:57.this horse hasn't done much wrong. He was a little bit on the outside

:27:58. > :28:01.of the curve and could not quite make that time, maybe Oliver on the

:28:02. > :28:06.first ride today might have made that effort, maybe even Oliver

:28:07. > :28:12.Townend might get fatigued. This is a real star of a horse, and one that

:28:13. > :28:18.we will see a lot more Robin the future. Here is Christopher Burton

:28:19. > :28:25.with Nobilis 18, he won something not long ago and then had a fall at

:28:26. > :28:29.Badminton. Could you put it all right had Burghley this afternoon?

:28:30. > :28:34.Four hours of quite brilliant sport, it is down to this picture that we

:28:35. > :28:39.are watching now. Look at that time, he still inside, could he be the

:28:40. > :28:43.only one that was inside. It is going to be very, very close, I

:28:44. > :28:51.suspect that he can't but as long as he jumps this, he will go into the

:28:52. > :28:59.lead with show-jumping to come. How many seconds will it be? Eight of

:29:00. > :29:06.them. He is on 33.4, he has got to fences in hand, with the one phase

:29:07. > :29:15.to come. Australia rule after cross-country. Well he really has

:29:16. > :29:19.given us an exhibition here. Yes this was an amazing bit of riding

:29:20. > :29:26.and not just an amazing bit of riding but a phenomenal horse. Just

:29:27. > :29:30.the turn, the balance, the flow, it really was rather perfect. He has

:29:31. > :29:38.given an exhibition right today, fantastic. Unbelievable, so grateful

:29:39. > :29:43.to the owners, they have been very supportive. And a big thanks to

:29:44. > :29:50.Dirk, hey mate, find us another one, that was great. You made it look

:29:51. > :29:55.easy? Well that is nice, I was so far down in the first few minutes

:29:56. > :30:05.and I thought, B will see what he does, he is a good horse. And he was

:30:06. > :30:06.amazing. Well the leaderboard, good news, for Christopher Burton who

:30:07. > :30:24.maintains his It is all to play for, with

:30:25. > :30:27.show-jumping to come. STUDIO: Out of the cross-country, it

:30:28. > :30:34.is time for the nerves to be racked in the show-jumping. It is the final

:30:35. > :30:39.phase, the ground is still a bit slippy, it is drying out but it is

:30:40. > :30:43.sticky. A course designer has been brilliant, he has softened some of

:30:44. > :30:47.the fences and and the distances, so if horses are getting stuck they are

:30:48. > :30:53.not having to open up and flap at the fences. The course is very

:30:54. > :30:58.twisty, which helps keep the horses' interest. I think this will be quite

:30:59. > :31:10.influential earlier in the course. For me, the toughest line, where we

:31:11. > :31:13.are here, the triple bar at the top of the hill, it is quite sloping, it

:31:14. > :31:15.looks flat, but it is not. Triple bar, eight strides down the hill,

:31:16. > :31:17.heading straight for the crowds at the end.

:31:18. > :31:21.You never know quite how horses will see things? It looks a bit like one

:31:22. > :31:27.fence as you approach, but then the horses will be backing off the

:31:28. > :31:32.crowds. He has shortened the distance, which is perfect. We only

:31:33. > :31:35.have around half the field at this stage, it is great that he has

:31:36. > :31:41.slightly softened it because we want to see horses jumping nicely. We

:31:42. > :31:46.lost a few horses yesterday, that is part and parcel of an event like

:31:47. > :31:49.this. For me, probably, the hardest part is right at the end of the

:31:50. > :31:56.course when people are getting excited, up the hill, quite a short

:31:57. > :32:02.five strides to a very vertical gaits that takes very little

:32:03. > :32:07.knocking to slide it. -- a very vertical gate. Then the crux of the

:32:08. > :32:11.course is the final fence, eight strides up the hill, this is where

:32:12. > :32:16.people get a rush of blood to the brain, suddenly get excited. They

:32:17. > :32:22.think they have a clear run, rush out, take a clear stride and, bang,

:32:23. > :32:26.the competition is gone. They jump in reverse order, Christopher

:32:27. > :32:32.Burton, the leader, will be going last. Mike Tucker can tell is how

:32:33. > :32:36.some of the earlier riders got on. COMMENTATOR: It was not easy for

:32:37. > :32:41.some, including double Olympic champion Andrew Hoy. He dropped six

:32:42. > :32:45.places from his overnight position. Sarah Bullimore, a good ride at

:32:46. > :32:50.cross-country, disappointment on the final day. Seven fences down. She

:32:51. > :32:56.dropped seven places down the final ranking.

:32:57. > :33:02.Treason and Sarah Cohen, a good round. Nice to see them back on

:33:03. > :33:08.form, they stayed in 12. Britain's best riding here last

:33:09. > :33:13.year, Tina Cook, a good run for just four penalties added. She finished

:33:14. > :33:17.hands-on Star Witness to again be one of the best British riders that

:33:18. > :33:23.Burghley -- she finished tenth on Star Witness.

:33:24. > :33:31.Blyth Tait the New Zealand, Bear Necessity V had one fence down, he

:33:32. > :33:36.finished in 11th place. The man who started with three but had two to

:33:37. > :33:41.ride in the show-jumping, Oliver Townend with Samuel Tom is common he

:33:42. > :33:45.jumped one of the only three clear rounds in this final afternoon

:33:46. > :33:49.session. -- Oliver Townend with Samuel Thomas II, he jumped one of

:33:50. > :33:54.the only three clear rounds in this fine afternoon session. He finished

:33:55. > :34:00.in seventh place on 59.6. Just before we see the top eight,

:34:01. > :34:06.Luco I have found, none other than Nick Skelton. How does it feel to be

:34:07. > :34:11.Britain's first-ever individual show-jumping champion? Amazing,

:34:12. > :34:16.great feeling, especially as it has taken me so long. Truly amazing. How

:34:17. > :34:21.much has this true than you through your career? You have won pretty

:34:22. > :34:26.much everything, how much has that Olympic individual title been on the

:34:27. > :34:31.back of your mind? -- how much has this driven you through your career?

:34:32. > :34:35.For any sports person, the Olympic Games is the ultimate. To win that

:34:36. > :34:40.is what you dream of, what you set out to do. To achieve it has been

:34:41. > :34:44.tremendous, amazing. There has been lots of talk about your previous

:34:45. > :34:54.injuries, you broke your next 16 years ago, you have had a hip

:34:55. > :34:57.replacement, try to explain how much pain you a couple of years ago you

:34:58. > :35:00.said to me that your specialist said the only way you cannot be in pain

:35:01. > :35:05.as if you stop writing. I go to a guy in London who injects me twice a

:35:06. > :35:13.year, that gives the pain-free, I am great at the moment. I am fine now.

:35:14. > :35:18.Doing an amazing job. It is one of the person who has helped me get

:35:19. > :35:22.where I am today, with lots of other people, so I am very grateful. I

:35:23. > :35:27.know you said you could have just retired after winning the individual

:35:28. > :35:31.title? I should, because in my career, that put the tin hat on it,

:35:32. > :35:43.really. But I think it is not fair to big star, he is in really good

:35:44. > :35:48.form. Let's quickly see your medal. It is there. Very nice. Thank you.

:35:49. > :35:53.Let's get straight to the action, the top aides are going in reverse

:35:54. > :35:57.order, Mike and Ian are in the commentary box. COMMENTATOR: The

:35:58. > :36:05.last eight in reverse order of merit, it is all pretty close. It is

:36:06. > :36:09.Cedric Lyard for friends with Cadeau Du Roi. There have only been two

:36:10. > :36:13.clear rounds in the jumping this afternoon. The ground is a little

:36:14. > :36:20.bit soft. The horses are looking as if they did a day's work yesterday.

:36:21. > :36:22.News overnight that Bill Levett, who was in ninth place, withdrew before

:36:23. > :36:34.the horse inspection this morning. Oliver Townend jumped one of those

:36:35. > :36:39.two clear rounds, on 63 at the moment, just outside the top eight.

:36:40. > :36:47.Cedric Lyard on a score of 59.6 after the cross-country yesterday.

:36:48. > :36:55.The ground is a little bit sticky here, as you said, Mike. Richard

:36:56. > :37:00.Jefferies, the course designer, has done a really good job with this

:37:01. > :37:06.drug. Lots of twists and turns to keep the horses balanced and

:37:07. > :37:11.occupied. -- did a really good job with this track. He has modified

:37:12. > :37:16.some of the fences. He has made them a little bit softer and more

:37:17. > :37:20.ascending. He has shortened some of the distances because of the sticky

:37:21. > :37:26.ground. Some of these horses would have been much better with slightly

:37:27. > :37:32.more room and distance. A good, clear round when it

:37:33. > :37:41.mattered. 59.6 will be his completion score for France. He

:37:42. > :37:46.might have missed out on a medal in Rio, but he was 70 last year. I have

:37:47. > :37:52.been lots of problems here this year. That was a brilliant, clear

:37:53. > :37:58.round. -- but he was seventh here last year. His supporters are

:37:59. > :38:06.ecstatic. Brilliance aboard. He looks very happy. 2016 has been the

:38:07. > :38:09.year of the French, they have been very successful, got better and

:38:10. > :38:14.better. Caroline Powell comes into the ring.

:38:15. > :38:18.She broke her leg earlier this year and spent a lot of time out. The

:38:19. > :38:21.horse has had some time off in the last couple of years, but they

:38:22. > :38:27.looked in cracking form yesterday. 59.4 is the score coming into the

:38:28. > :38:35.final phase. Fourth after dressage, 37.8. Then 29.6 time penalties, did

:38:36. > :38:41.not look as hungry as some over the last mile. Good to see them back. At

:38:42. > :38:45.their best, they are another very good card for the New Zealanders to

:38:46. > :38:51.have up their sleeve. Currently in seventh place.

:38:52. > :38:59.He was brilliant yesterday as, indeed, with Caroline. Wow, is he

:39:00. > :39:05.jumping this morning? The horse's owner is in the Scottish Borders. A

:39:06. > :39:11.big contingent down here to watch. Just a little casual in front. He is

:39:12. > :39:18.almost over jumping, he has been so good. Quite a long stride between

:39:19. > :39:19.those two verticals, just reached a little bit for it, flattened in

:39:20. > :39:31.front. Although the arena looks very level

:39:32. > :39:35.and flat from that triple bar down to this trouble it is a little bit

:39:36. > :39:40.downhill, they are jumping straight towards the crowds. Onwards and

:39:41. > :39:47.upwards, paying no attention, totally focused on what he is doing.

:39:48. > :40:00.He has been an exceptional jumper over the years. Coming towards the

:40:01. > :40:06.end, four within offence. -- within a fence.

:40:07. > :40:23.And she stays clear. Just one fence down, 63.4.

:40:24. > :40:29.The New Zealanders have five in the top ten after cross-country last

:40:30. > :40:33.night. As he jumps that final fence you can see that Caroline is not

:40:34. > :40:37.very happy at having that one down. She knows he is very capable of

:40:38. > :40:42.jumping a clear round. But they have both been off the road for a while,

:40:43. > :40:49.so it is great for her. Cedric realises he has moved up a slot. Won

:40:50. > :41:00.another ?1500. No wonder he is smiling!

:41:01. > :41:12.Now a man who has won five times. You look back over the years, the

:41:13. > :41:18.first one was as long ago as 1987, with Wilton Fair. Then he won with

:41:19. > :41:30.Face The Music, a whole host of great horses. His Last Win Was In

:41:31. > :41:36.1999. Mark Todd, The Great Mark Todd, Nzb Campino. Jump Clear, And

:41:37. > :41:48.He Will Stay In Sixth Place, Drop A Rail And He Will Be just ahead of

:41:49. > :41:55.Oliver Townend. Fortunately time is not proving to

:41:56. > :41:57.be too difficulty. Sometimes if the designer measures the course very

:41:58. > :42:00.tightly and they have to keep cutting corners and hurrying the

:42:01. > :42:03.horses, it encourages careless jumping. But Richard Jefferies has

:42:04. > :42:18.done a good job here. This is a man with back-to-back gold

:42:19. > :42:28.medals on the great Charisma back in 84 /80 eight. Then, sadly,

:42:29. > :42:34.disappointment for him in Rio. Sadly, quite a big score for him.

:42:35. > :42:39.Drops New Zealand out of the team bronze medal situation,

:42:40. > :42:44.disappointment. Coming into that final with one down at the moment. I

:42:45. > :42:55.can't help feeling that he paid the penalty of attacking that triple

:42:56. > :43:04.bar. Though, that is very expensive. 67, the final score, dropping him to

:43:05. > :43:11.ninth. Up come Caroline Powell, surgically art of France and Oliver

:43:12. > :43:17.Townend for Great Britain. -- Cedric Lyard of France.

:43:18. > :43:22.Eight straight up from that gates to the final fence. It is very tempting

:43:23. > :43:28.just to open up and get a little bit flat.

:43:29. > :43:38.Bettina Hoy had one of her greatest moments here. She actually finished

:43:39. > :43:42.in runner-up place behind, funnily enough, Mark Todd in a European Open

:43:43. > :43:47.Championship here in 1997, which meant she became European champion,

:43:48. > :43:53.being the first European rider in that classification. She has been at

:43:54. > :43:57.the top level ever since she first rode in the Olympics in 1984 in Los

:43:58. > :44:05.Angeles. Tremendous performance yesterday. Did some very good

:44:06. > :44:13.dressage. She was in second place, added 19.2 to be in fifth place

:44:14. > :44:21.overnight on 53.7. This horse is a good jumper but he was rather spooky

:44:22. > :44:26.at fence two. Looked at it and jumped sideways. Just got a bit

:44:27. > :44:30.close but got away with that. We have seen this horse at the

:44:31. > :44:34.cross-country, he can put in tiny little strides and he has the scope

:44:35. > :44:40.to get away with it. You don't want to do that too often in the

:44:41. > :44:46.show-jumping phase. Again, for me, he was just a little

:44:47. > :44:52.bit too deep, stalls, did not quite make the spread of that triple bar.

:44:53. > :44:56.Really tries, though, this horse. That one knocked out at the moment.

:44:57. > :45:05.Does not drop it out of place. Apparently in this. -- in fifth. She

:45:06. > :45:20.will get ?17,000 if she stays on 58.7, 57.7, indeed. But she won't.

:45:21. > :45:32.Then she goes. -- down she goes. But jumped the last. 61.7, two fences

:45:33. > :45:34.down. She drops below Cedric Lyard. Cedric Lyard has come from eight up

:45:35. > :45:50.to fifth. Just does a big jump over that

:45:51. > :45:56.triple bar, it is just down a little bit too quickly, and his back heat

:45:57. > :46:03.take it out. Here is the lady who really impressed us yesterday,

:46:04. > :46:19.brilliant round. A horse that was broken up in Yorkshire. -- bread.

:46:20. > :46:30.Classic Moet, has become a Britos particularly in her hands. She can

:46:31. > :46:39.have one down and still stay fourth. New Zealand have got three out of

:46:40. > :46:45.four. She was quite risky at that first fence, she is fairly flying.

:46:46. > :46:52.It is all about what happens on the day. She is a bit flat at times. A

:46:53. > :47:02.lot of rattling going on. So far we are OK. Certainly the cross-country

:47:03. > :47:06.yesterday, Mark Phillips's cross-country course was very

:47:07. > :47:11.demanding, he took a lot out of the horses. Some of them today were

:47:12. > :47:16.looking a bit fatigued. Classic Moet, looks as though, could go

:47:17. > :47:23.cross-country again. Full of running. They can actually afford to

:47:24. > :47:45.have one more, and still stay ahead of said Ricciardo. -- Cedric Lyard.

:47:46. > :47:54.Some good jumping. URL watching one of the best combinations in the

:47:55. > :48:01.sport at the moment. Just to finish in fourth place in the team in Rio

:48:02. > :48:05.for New Zealand, 54.1, the final score for Jonelle Price, Classic

:48:06. > :48:15.Moet at the 2016 Burghley three-day events.

:48:16. > :48:27.The shots, just as the next comes in, Eric, with blind Tate. He must

:48:28. > :48:33.be a very happy man with the leaderboard. Will he remain that

:48:34. > :48:46.way. Andrew Nicholson, -- with Blyth Tait. So he has done three burly

:48:47. > :49:00.meetings on that what, 2012, 2013, 2014. He was riding a horse that has

:49:01. > :49:07.retired this season, and now, he is riding Nereo. He was how a bronze

:49:08. > :49:13.medallist team wise in the London Olympics. He is currently lying

:49:14. > :49:20.third, on 47 points. He has got a huge time penalties yesterday,

:49:21. > :49:24.beautiful clear jumping wise. But 12 time penalties that left him in

:49:25. > :49:33.third place, after a dressage school, one of his best I think, the

:49:34. > :49:37.finished also third overnight. A brilliant cross-country horse,

:49:38. > :49:48.massive stride, he is galloping, sometimes those big strides are his

:49:49. > :49:57.undoing in the jumping phase. He has got a great jump and a great

:49:58. > :50:02.attitude to work. And actually that was really well-written, this horse,

:50:03. > :50:07.the combination tends to open up. He kept him short and the horses really

:50:08. > :50:13.responding. The triple bar is a frustrating fence to have down. Let

:50:14. > :50:19.us remind you, this man exactly one year ago, was lying extremely ill in

:50:20. > :50:27.bed with virtually a broken neck. He has made an amazing recovery. Coming

:50:28. > :50:29.down to the last to guarantee himself third place, and he jumps

:50:30. > :50:45.it, he will definitely finished third. 53.2. Nereo and Andrew

:50:46. > :50:50.Nicholson. Well, so hi, just literally catches it with his back

:50:51. > :50:59.toes and he takes that triple bar out. How annoying to have that one

:51:00. > :51:06.down, one of the best rounds. Andrew Nicholson is certainly right back to

:51:07. > :51:12.the top of his game. What a good picture of his wife riding

:51:13. > :51:18.everything with him. So, the time. He still stays in that third place,

:51:19. > :51:28.two to jump. One for New Zealand and one for Australia. And that one for

:51:29. > :51:37.New Zealand, Jonelle Price's husband Tim. Riding the horse he was second

:51:38. > :51:45.on here last year, ring road. -- Ringwood Sky Boy. And again, husband

:51:46. > :51:49.and wife partnership, the best marriage partnership there is in the

:51:50. > :51:54.sport. And this man produced a superb round, that remember after he

:51:55. > :51:58.had fallen on the flat in Rio, but the horse has come back looking

:51:59. > :52:11.better than ever, the trip to Rio has done the horse no harm. That

:52:12. > :52:16.stage. 44.9. He can afford to have two fences down and still stay in

:52:17. > :52:19.second. He has already had a couple of rods and we saw in the

:52:20. > :52:25.cross-country that he's capable of rattling the tops of his fences. And

:52:26. > :52:31.a little bit of wagging going on. Yes. He was trying to add the

:52:32. > :52:43.stride, keep him short. He was just not organised the take-off. -- the

:52:44. > :53:01.take-off. He had one. He can have another. Still to finish second.

:53:02. > :53:10.As Tim said yesterday, he has not had the best of seasons, with a top

:53:11. > :53:12.horse going lame, he cannot afford to have another. He jumps this, and

:53:13. > :53:27.he has. 56.9, so he goes down, and he goes

:53:28. > :53:47.down in oral two places. Yes just occasionally twisting. It wasn't

:53:48. > :53:57.much. And, his wife Jonelle Price, she goes up as he goes down. And,

:53:58. > :54:02.Ringwood Sky Boy, and Tim are now below Jonelle Price. And the man who

:54:03. > :54:07.stands aloft at the moment, with quite a brick lead, Christopher

:54:08. > :54:13.Burton of Australia, the horse that has come out of Germany, has

:54:14. > :54:18.promised quite a lot all year. Did have a fall that badminton

:54:19. > :54:24.cross-country but was going very well at the time. But yesterday, it

:54:25. > :54:29.looked a real class performance. The overnight leader after dressage,

:54:30. > :54:37.just added 3.2 time penalties. And currently on that score of 33.4. At

:54:38. > :54:46.the moment in second place is Andrew Nicholson, on that score of 53.2.

:54:47. > :54:50.Well he was the class act of yesterday on the cross-country

:54:51. > :54:54.course. Both horse and rider for that matter. Great partnership. It

:54:55. > :55:02.looked very controlled and impressive. There is no real moment

:55:03. > :55:06.of panic. Just a little bit braver I thought going into that double. He

:55:07. > :55:13.doesn't want to have too many of those. That could be very expensive

:55:14. > :55:17.and another rub. Just to remind you that he was in for a potential

:55:18. > :55:25.Olympic gold individually as part of the team bronze for Australia in

:55:26. > :55:29.Rio. He was potentially on for 18 goals, there is Santino. Is the same

:55:30. > :55:40.thing going to happen again -- for what a team gold. Is technique is

:55:41. > :55:49.good, this horse but he gets a little bit quick here, low in front

:55:50. > :55:58.at times. Andrew Nicholson on 53.2. He could have these last two down

:55:59. > :56:06.and still win. He has got one down. And the last goes. My gosh, he

:56:07. > :56:19.nearly gave it away. 49.4, is the winning score in the end. He

:56:20. > :56:25.couldn't have afforded another. He nearly lost it again. He did, we

:56:26. > :56:29.have always said, this is not a dressage competition but actually he

:56:30. > :56:33.has won this competition on his stress out almost because he was so

:56:34. > :56:40.far in front and then he extended that lead on the cross-country, it

:56:41. > :56:53.is a little bit tiresome in the way. Dare I say. There is Jonelle Price

:56:54. > :57:01.and Andrew Nicholson. That is Rebecca Burton. Christopher has

:57:02. > :57:06.recently married his wife. And I think that Christopher is feeling

:57:07. > :57:18.quite fortunate to win a major, with those fences down. 49.4 is the

:57:19. > :57:23.winning score. So, the 2016 title goes to the Australian Christopher

:57:24. > :57:42.Burton, riding, Sue Lawson and Caroline Townsend's Nobilis 18.

:57:43. > :57:49.Christopher you gave everyone a bit of a worry and you used up a fence

:57:50. > :57:54.in hand and another one? Unbelievable, I had my nine lives,

:57:55. > :57:59.it was a bit of an interesting day, very flat but I guess that is

:58:00. > :58:03.Burghley. Still very happy. You didn't do badly having jumped that

:58:04. > :58:09.massive course. That is right, exactly. You led from start to

:58:10. > :58:16.finish, what is the secret, you are the man of the moment? That is very

:58:17. > :58:20.kind, I'm lucky, I have lovely horses like nebulous 18 and it was

:58:21. > :58:27.great to do well at Burghley. And this was a horse, that Michael Jung,

:58:28. > :58:33.had, and he rejected it. He has phoned you, and said that he wants

:58:34. > :58:37.it back? Perhaps that is why he wants it back ache, but nevertheless

:58:38. > :58:46.it is still a nice day. Well congratulations. STUDIO: Well a

:58:47. > :58:51.lovely Burghley cause trial, and Christopher Burton, leading from

:58:52. > :58:57.start to finish and he is the first New Zealander to win four a decade

:58:58. > :59:04.and it has not been a great year for the British riders. But we have had

:59:05. > :59:05.a wonderful time, Burghley has lived up to its reputation
