:00:15. > :00:29.What competition. My word! This horse has been absolutely brilliant.
:00:30. > :00:34.Exceptional. What a fabulous combination. Pure class. He is way
:00:35. > :01:05.over it! Welcome to Lincolnshire. This
:01:06. > :01:10.glorious estate and Elizabethan house has been the setting of many a
:01:11. > :01:13.film and drama series, but this weekend it's golden gate and gold
:01:14. > :01:18.tipped turrets form the backdrop to one of the highlights of the
:01:19. > :01:23.eventing season, the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. ?300,000 in
:01:24. > :01:27.the pot in total, 90,000 going to the winner. We have horses here from
:01:28. > :01:30.all around the globe. But the British riders have never felt more
:01:31. > :01:34.confident, and that's because they come here on a high from having
:01:35. > :01:43.taken team gold at the recent European Championships in Poland.
:01:44. > :01:48.The horse doesn't quite lock on. This may be important for the
:01:49. > :02:01.British team. Just got to hold together. We know
:02:02. > :02:05.Great Britain are going to get a team medal today, that is
:02:06. > :02:10.guaranteed, but it all hangs in the balance, all scores count. She has
:02:11. > :02:19.done it. Britain takes the gold medal. Massive congratulations to
:02:20. > :02:23.each and every one of them. They really are tremendous athletes, and
:02:24. > :02:28.they will remember this day for a long, long time.
:02:29. > :02:35.Tina Cook and Oliver Townend are with me. Many congratulations.
:02:36. > :02:42.British eventing needed this, and to come back with the gold was
:02:43. > :02:46.fantastic. We knew if we could put in our personal best, we would
:02:47. > :02:52.challenge them, but to get ahead of the Germans was fantastic. And how
:02:53. > :02:56.much does it help having Chris Bartle on the British side rather
:02:57. > :03:00.than the Germans? I had my first job with him, he is a good man and
:03:01. > :03:03.instilled a lot of confidence in the team, and he was brilliant through
:03:04. > :03:07.the championships. And as you said, it is not just us having him, it is
:03:08. > :03:12.the Germans not having him which plays a part. You both have two ride
:03:13. > :03:18.here this weekend, so what are your hopes? You want to come here and be
:03:19. > :03:22.competitive, I am the first out with Star Witness, he has finished in the
:03:23. > :03:28.top ten twice before, but he struggles with the dressage. And
:03:29. > :03:35.Calvino, he has been round Badminton in the spring and is doing well.
:03:36. > :03:38.Very similar, Samuel Thomas, I followed Tina out, he was seventh
:03:39. > :03:43.here last year, against rebels with the dressage but hopefully should
:03:44. > :03:46.jump around, and they have an exciting new young horse, ten years
:03:47. > :03:53.old, first time at this level, Balmore class, and I think he is
:03:54. > :04:01.probably one of the best horses I have ever had. We will be keeping
:04:02. > :04:08.tabs on both of you, and also Gemma Tattersall and Piggy French, they
:04:09. > :04:13.are here along with a host of stars. New Zealand's five times Burghley
:04:14. > :04:19.winner Sir Mark Todd, and Andrew Nicholson, who this spring won his
:04:20. > :04:23.first badminton. A strong American contingent headed by Boyd Martin,
:04:24. > :04:27.and amongst the British riders, Zara Tindall, 14 years after making her
:04:28. > :04:31.debut which you finished second here to Pippa Funnell, she will fancy her
:04:32. > :04:37.chances of winning the title on High Kingdom. We have had fabulous
:04:38. > :04:42.weather for the first two days of dressage and big crowds, Ian start
:04:43. > :04:47.here beside me, and leading the way, the oldest man in the field, Mark
:04:48. > :04:55.Todd. Can you believe it? He will be thrilled, because leonine has always
:04:56. > :05:10.been the favourite, but this was by far his best, and Mark Todd could
:05:11. > :05:15.pass for a 20 odd if you don't get too close! He is right at the top of
:05:16. > :05:19.his game, and is now talking about going to Tokyo, which would be his
:05:20. > :05:23.eighth Olympic Games? And quite right, too. He is riding like a
:05:24. > :05:27.young man, and he looks great. He really works on his fitness. So good
:05:28. > :05:37.luck to him. Let's talk about Lauren Kieffer, over from the USA, she is
:05:38. > :05:50.not far behind Toddy. Yes, and was second in Kentucky. Karen O'Connor
:05:51. > :05:54.produced the horse, Veronica, initially. She had fought earlier
:05:55. > :06:00.this summer, but if they are on form, they could be contenders. And
:06:01. > :06:04.when Michael Jung is at an event, he did admit to making a slight
:06:05. > :06:09.mistake, and was marked down for it in the flying changes. It was a
:06:10. > :06:12.silly mistake, anyone can make it, but the good thing about Michael
:06:13. > :06:17.Jung is he didn't react to it. He forgot about it and moved on and got
:06:18. > :06:20.good marks again. But he is never really in the lead on Sam, he is
:06:21. > :06:26.behind the leaders and comes through and finishes on that score, that is
:06:27. > :06:30.what he is brilliant at. We have five riders with scores of less than
:06:31. > :06:34.40, and the best place British rider Tina Cook will be thrilled with
:06:35. > :06:41.that. She is in flying form. I watched her all year. Younger horses
:06:42. > :06:45.coming through, she has never put a foot wrong, and the European
:06:46. > :06:48.Championships just showed, she is such a consistent performer, and she
:06:49. > :06:51.gets better and better in my opinion, and she will be delighted
:06:52. > :06:58.with this young horse. Let's confirm the leaderboard for you: After the
:06:59. > :07:06.dressage, Mark Todd in front, Michael Jung of Germany on 38.9, and
:07:07. > :07:13.Andrew Nicholson going for the red double of Badminton and Burghley in
:07:14. > :07:22.the same year. A very good test from Oliver Townend and Don l'amour
:07:23. > :07:28.class. Gemma Tattersall, a personal best for her. But all of these
:07:29. > :07:32.riders in contention, it is a very cramped leaderboard, any score in
:07:33. > :07:35.the 40s is decent as well, so going right down to Tom McEwen who could
:07:36. > :07:39.move right at the leaderboard with good cross-country.
:07:40. > :07:45.So that is the leaderboard after one third of the competition, but now
:07:46. > :07:50.the big test, and it is big. Captain Mark Phillips is once again the
:07:51. > :07:54.course designer, and here he is making use of trees that came down
:07:55. > :07:57.in storm Doris, this is a big jumping test that will take the
:07:58. > :08:00.riders 11 and a half minutes to complete, but this is what it looks
:08:01. > :09:17.like from the horse's point of view in just 90 seconds.
:09:18. > :09:27.Well, if that took your breath away, let's have a look in a bit more
:09:28. > :09:30.detail. 6400 metres, this course, 11 minutes and 14 seconds the optimum
:09:31. > :09:35.time, and five jumping efforts inside the first minute and the
:09:36. > :09:42.first major test at six, the lakeside corners. Lakeside corners
:09:43. > :09:45.is a very serious question, it is about finding your line early in the
:09:46. > :09:50.water and then go for it, keeping the horse straight and attacking the
:09:51. > :09:55.corn is the key for me to jump it clear and fast. The more difficult
:09:56. > :09:59.routes pass to the left of the step and John Podmore extreme corner, so
:10:00. > :10:04.one jumping effort instead of three, but it is a difficult line. The
:10:05. > :10:09.other way, you have to step up, over a log and a direct line to the
:10:10. > :10:13.corner. Then it is left to the formidable but good jump into the
:10:14. > :10:21.slate mine, and then the new part of the course. Storm Doris is a big
:10:22. > :10:23.bowl, technical question. It is beautifully inviting, those huge
:10:24. > :10:29.logs which makes it look a bit smaller until you get closer and you
:10:30. > :10:32.realise how vast they are. The straight route is less effort in
:10:33. > :10:38.that it is less jumping, but the actual size of the jumps, the
:10:39. > :10:42.straight route corner is enormous. And on the left hand side you can go
:10:43. > :10:51.corner to a log and then to another smaller log. It is just a slower
:10:52. > :10:57.route. And then a little time up the famous winners Avenue where all past
:10:58. > :11:03.Burghley heroes are honoured, and onto the leap at 13. A really tricky
:11:04. > :11:09.brush combination with an alternative at 15, and then... For a
:11:10. > :11:16.half minutes into the course, we come to fence 16, the Land Rover
:11:17. > :11:20.dairy farm. Steep approach up this bank to a very upright gait,
:11:21. > :11:25.although I think this year because we have jumped it already it doesn't
:11:26. > :11:30.look so bad. We have an alternative over there, which is another upright
:11:31. > :11:34.gait but on level ground, but it is going to take you quite a bit
:11:35. > :11:39.longer. But it looks very imposing coming up the bank, let's hope for a
:11:40. > :11:44.good shot. And we have got to be thinking, jumping a little bit left
:11:45. > :11:50.to right, because over there we have 16 B and 17, all in one fence, so we
:11:51. > :11:53.have to get that line right to go down the drop and over the corner.
:11:54. > :11:56.It is a real test of the horses where they need to understand that
:11:57. > :12:01.there is a job coming up, but they probably don't understand what that
:12:02. > :12:05.is until we get to about here. Then they will look at, and they will
:12:06. > :12:13.store over this fairly big corner no problems. If by chance your horse
:12:14. > :12:17.runs out here, you then have an option of going around, jumping
:12:18. > :12:26.another roll-top there, and then moving on around and jumping the
:12:27. > :12:30.corner there. 17 fences effectively taken, and over 18 and 19. We are
:12:31. > :12:37.now at the Rolex combination fence, which is numbered 18 and 19. These
:12:38. > :12:41.are three seriously big fences, but from stood back, there is a line
:12:42. > :12:46.through them, but it is just going to encourage some really positive,
:12:47. > :12:51.bold, accurate riding. From the start you can see how wide this
:12:52. > :12:56.fence is, you have to be really accurate here. Be positive, land
:12:57. > :13:02.over this, hopefully we will be here, landing about here, and then
:13:03. > :13:07.forced rides to the middle element, we are walking it here. Sticking
:13:08. > :13:11.slightly to the right-hand side all the time with our eyes up looking at
:13:12. > :13:17.19, the last element of this combination which is a corner,
:13:18. > :13:21.requires accuracy. If you get in well, ride your four strides super
:13:22. > :13:26.forward, get a big jump over this huge ditch, look up and then forward
:13:27. > :13:31.on your four strides over there. You are here to be bold and give it a
:13:32. > :13:35.real go. The alternative is quite fiddly, quite tricky, having a
:13:36. > :13:38.bounce over this rail to a tight turn to a pretty massive corn on the
:13:39. > :13:42.turn as well. If we run out of the final part, you do have a get out
:13:43. > :13:50.just here on the right, but it is just going to waste a lot of time.
:13:51. > :13:54.It is a combination that Mark Phillips, the course designer,
:13:55. > :13:59.thinks is the hardest on the course. The captains log 21, and then the
:14:00. > :14:05.most famous water complex of all. The trout hatchery is one of the key
:14:06. > :14:09.fences. Bravery is needed. You have to make sure that you have plenty of
:14:10. > :14:13.energy, it is late on in the course, you have to make sure the horses
:14:14. > :14:16.focused and in front of you, because there are lots of questions, you
:14:17. > :14:19.have to keep to your line, keep your shoulders back and focus on where
:14:20. > :14:25.you want to go and keep the horse in front of you. It is very much a
:14:26. > :14:34.4-star question. It is very fair, but it will cause problems. They
:14:35. > :14:37.will be hoping to stay dry and stay focused as they head on past friends
:14:38. > :14:47.24, Herbert's hollow, to the discovery Valley. We have a big
:14:48. > :14:51.brush oxer, and if you over jump it, you will run past the hedge, that
:14:52. > :14:56.would be getting late on in the course. It will be a quick, long
:14:57. > :14:59.route, and not too strenuous on them, which you have to think about
:15:00. > :15:05.at that stage. It is a tough question because it is late in the
:15:06. > :15:08.course, and it is like Burghley, it is tough all the way. The end of the
:15:09. > :15:17.course really twist and turns and undulates, and it gets no less
:15:18. > :15:21.testing. Belief pit requires bravery and balance as you go down the steep
:15:22. > :15:25.slide and accuracy when you get to the bottom to jump the triple bar
:15:26. > :15:29.arrowheads on two strides on really dodgy ground. It is going to take
:15:30. > :15:31.stamina, a lot of grip, I don't think anyone is going to do that
:15:32. > :15:41.just beautifully and calmly. Panizzon, Concentration required as
:15:42. > :15:47.they double back on themselves for Discovery Valley again and then the
:15:48. > :15:57.arena home coming, the picnic table and the final fence is in Land Rover
:15:58. > :16:02.finale. We have perfect conditions here today, the sun is shining, the
:16:03. > :16:11.crowds are here taking their positions. The first rider on the
:16:12. > :16:20.course is Tina Cook on Star Witness. Let's join our commentators. No
:16:21. > :16:26.better pair to start us than Tina Cook and Star Witness, fresh from
:16:27. > :16:33.her performance in the gold medal winning team. This horse has scope
:16:34. > :16:38.and experience. Yes and Tina's involvement with racing as well and
:16:39. > :16:44.the whole family's steeped in racing and show jumping and eventing, the
:16:45. > :16:47.horse is so fit. She has them at the best of their condition. She is in
:16:48. > :16:53.flying form. Everything she rides just is going well. I hope that
:16:54. > :17:00.doesn't put a jinx on her. Because she is in great form. Three decades
:17:01. > :17:08.at the top, Tina, but really fired up for this composition. --
:17:09. > :17:18.competition. Down to the Lion Bridge water that, bit at the top is
:17:19. > :17:23.technically tough. Looking good. On to fence 5 and 6 the lakeside
:17:24. > :17:26.corners. One jump over a massive corner. Three jumping efforts, much
:17:27. > :17:38.slower. Tina looking very determined, very
:17:39. > :17:43.positive. Grit and determination on her face. And she is going to take
:17:44. > :17:48.the one jumping effort. I can't see why anyone would want to put three
:17:49. > :17:53.efforts in here. It is a huge stamina question, this course at
:17:54. > :18:00.Burghley and Tina pops that big brush corner. This uphill fence
:18:01. > :18:06.looks massive, because it is uphill, the horses have their hind legs
:18:07. > :18:12.under them and make it look simple. Tina jumped it to the right where it
:18:13. > :18:18.is a tiny bit smaller. There is no jump there. But not the perfect spot
:18:19. > :18:24.for that big brush, but nice and close. She wants to save a bit of
:18:25. > :18:31.energy as she comes town the hill -- down the hill to this new part of
:18:32. > :18:36.the course after Storm Doris. A right-hand route. Probably going to
:18:37. > :18:42.be the favoured route. Two long strides for Tina. The riders were
:18:43. > :18:51.walking that quite short. Tina had to sit down and ride. The The name
:18:52. > :18:59.suggests trees brought down in that storm. Now here is Zam. A no
:19:00. > :19:05.nonsense combination. I have had respect for Harry and this horse,
:19:06. > :19:13.Xam. They have had some great rides. Just the odd hiccup. Kristina Cook
:19:14. > :19:18.and the Cottesmore leap. She makes it look easy. You expect that from a
:19:19. > :19:24.thoroughbred horse. It is the top of the hill and they have the choice of
:19:25. > :19:30.left hand route over two brush oxers. But she gets a brilliant
:19:31. > :19:39.ride. There is an alternative to the right. Harry Dzenis and Xam. Lovely
:19:40. > :19:54.spot to that brush. Wasting no energy. Tina Cook approaching the
:19:55. > :20:00.Land Rover dairy farm. The white line is the direct route. The yellow
:20:01. > :20:07.line five seconds longer. She is ahead of the clock. Perfect footing
:20:08. > :20:15.here. Tina's on a thoroughbred horse. Makes that look like child's
:20:16. > :20:24.play. What's Mark Phillips thinking now, too easy? I think he will be
:20:25. > :20:32.sick at this present time. Andrew Nicholson on Qwanza. Just pops that.
:20:33. > :20:38.It is quite distracting going under the bridge to get to this trailer.
:20:39. > :20:46.But lovely expression from the mare. Tina Cook approaching the Rolex. The
:20:47. > :20:51.direct route here, big oxer. Over a chicaner and then a corner. Captain
:20:52. > :20:55.Phillips thinks this the hardest combination she has set them, do you
:20:56. > :21:01.agree? I think there is a way through it. For me five strides on
:21:02. > :21:05.the bends, over the chicaner and move on to the four on that corner.
:21:06. > :21:09.Perfectly executed. Mark will be sick, that just looked so easy.
:21:10. > :21:19.Don't want to put the mockers on, but she is doing it ever so easily.
:21:20. > :21:27.Andrew Nicholson. Oh! Qwanza almost too brave there. Just took one
:21:28. > :21:33.stride and said, I can do this, dad. Happily Qwanza is up and so is
:21:34. > :21:38.Andrew, but he looks sore. The mare takes up and just cannot make it.
:21:39. > :21:45.That is a great pity. Almost too brave from the horse. She had that
:21:46. > :21:54.lovely expression on her face. She is a little mare, but Andrew said
:21:55. > :22:02.she has too much heart. Tina Cook at the maltings. There is a direct line
:22:03. > :22:12.and a bit more distance to the final oxer. A huge base spread on these
:22:13. > :22:18.jumps. She just pops over them. Harry Dzenis on the dairy farm. He
:22:19. > :22:23.is four seconds under. It is a big gate at the top of this. The rise
:22:24. > :22:31.puts the horse in a nice shape and they jump the gate well. Really
:22:32. > :22:36.positive. Nice flowing round. Tina Cook coming to the trout hatchery.
:22:37. > :22:42.The direct route that is white line. The yellow route's a long time to
:22:43. > :22:47.take the alternative. Here she is on Star Witness. That is a big brush on
:22:48. > :22:56.the approach and they have to run through a puddle here. A little
:22:57. > :23:00.hesitant, but a drop and a trot in the water. But keeps focussed and
:23:01. > :23:05.Tina is determined. Brilliantly ridden. Well done both of them and
:23:06. > :23:17.she is punching the air and clapping the horse. Claire Abbot for Ireland
:23:18. > :23:25.on Euro Prince. 23rd after the first phase. They're a gutsy pair. This
:23:26. > :23:32.always has a great expression on its face. They're taking the direct one
:23:33. > :23:35.option. It is an enduring partnership, they have been together
:23:36. > :23:45.since the horse was a five-year-old, now 14. The discovery valley here
:23:46. > :23:54.the quick route over the big brush and turn sharp left. Tricky.
:23:55. > :24:00.Tina coming down the hill now. The important thing at this brush is at
:24:01. > :24:05.the top of the rise they have got to get in close so they don't overjump
:24:06. > :24:11.on the landing side and then make that tough turn with the sloping
:24:12. > :24:17.away camber. Gets the perfect four strides. It is no wonder she is
:24:18. > :24:25.patting this horse. Claire Abbot down to Storm Doris. They're quick,
:24:26. > :24:33.it looked as quick as Andrew Nicholson, but the horse backs off.
:24:34. > :24:37.Harry Dzenis and Xam. Harry has been giving a great performance out here.
:24:38. > :24:43.Lovely jumping. Gets the four strides to that brush and then a
:24:44. > :24:48.steady five. Spot on there. Making this look pretty easy. Beautifully
:24:49. > :24:57.through the trout hatchery. As Tina Cook and Star Witness, the first on
:24:58. > :25:01.the course, head down now towards the Rolex grandstand rail. They're
:25:02. > :25:05.well within the time and it is the leaf pit next. This is tricky. This
:25:06. > :25:12.is seriously tricky. She is coming the quick route. It is a steep bank
:25:13. > :25:18.down and two very skinny fences on a bending two. Tina, wow! And this is
:25:19. > :25:27.great for young riders to look at. She is encouraging the horse the
:25:28. > :25:33.whole time. 31-year-old Claire Abbot and Euro Prince for Ireland. That
:25:34. > :25:38.was a bit of a scary one. A big jump over the corner. She doesn't seem to
:25:39. > :25:44.mind, she just keeps riding forward. That is the name of the game, always
:25:45. > :25:50.attacking. The last stages for Tina Cook so, far, so brilliant. And so
:25:51. > :25:56.quickly back into her rhythm after the jumps. She is moving and
:25:57. > :26:00.motivate rd, wastes not a second. A good indication of how close the
:26:01. > :26:06.crowd can get. What effect does the arena have on the horses? They have
:26:07. > :26:14.been doing dressage and the next day they will show jump. They can be
:26:15. > :26:21.distracted. She made it look easy. She may get inside the time. Here is
:26:22. > :26:27.Harry Dzenis. It has been a good round so far. And a good tapped on
:26:28. > :26:33.shoulder, he said, stay straight, mate. And the horse responded. Will
:26:34. > :26:36.Tina make it inside the time. She has 15 seconds to make it. She has
:26:37. > :26:40.just got the final fence to negotiate and through the finish and
:26:41. > :26:46.she should do is and she should do this comfortably and if you want a
:26:47. > :26:52.path finder, you won't find a better one than that. A punch of the air
:26:53. > :26:58.and a check of the watch. Fantastic. That is a great performance. Mark
:26:59. > :27:01.Philips, the course designer will be kind of disappointed, but we are
:27:02. > :27:18.thrilled. Surely going to get harder than that. Tom McEwan a young rider.
:27:19. > :27:24.On the Toledo De Kerser. A real potential team member for the
:27:25. > :27:36.future. Done nothing wrong in the build up to Burghley and started off
:27:37. > :27:41.in a very positive fashion. Tom's got a lot of ability a lot of
:27:42. > :27:44.talent. He trained with Mark Todd. Quickly moved his whip through there
:27:45. > :27:50.from his right hand to his left hand. That tells you he is going
:27:51. > :27:56.this bounce step way, so he can encourage the horse to stay
:27:57. > :28:00.straight. I like to see that, the rider swapping the whip, it shows
:28:01. > :28:09.they're thinking ahead. And easy. Over that huge fence that comes
:28:10. > :28:14.after the lakeside corners. Claire Abbot on Euro Prince. Look at his
:28:15. > :28:20.ears, it is just the expression is fantastic. He is still a double
:28:21. > :28:24.handful. He wants to get on with it. Claire getting organised. Actually
:28:25. > :28:31.shouting, launch. Never going to make that direct route. He is just
:28:32. > :28:39.jumping through her hand a bit. Getting a bit wild and woolly, but
:28:40. > :28:46.they're still clear. They have to indicate to the fence judges they're
:28:47. > :28:51.going to take the longer route. Here is Harry Dzenis and Xam, they're a
:28:52. > :28:55.little down on the clock. 57.3 and into second position. A very assured
:28:56. > :29:02.performance. A brilliant performance actually. We turn to Tom McEwan, one
:29:03. > :29:08.young man to another. Not the perfect spot at the brush. But
:29:09. > :29:12.thinking forward. That positive attitude will help. So far the
:29:13. > :29:17.favoured route seems to be that left-hand side. A long do strides.
:29:18. > :29:22.-- a long two strides. It is great if they get it right like that. My
:29:23. > :29:29.worry is the ones that miss. This just a check on the the time for
:29:30. > :29:36.Tom. He is going well. Just a ten-year-old. A promising horse and
:29:37. > :29:46.a promising young rider as well. Through the dairy farm. Lovely. You
:29:47. > :29:53.couldn't is for a better path find tore show how it is done. That was
:29:54. > :29:59.magnificent. I'm actually welling up. He has been here before and he
:30:00. > :30:05.was amazing, he is a thoroughbred horse, but he rides like a pony. He
:30:06. > :30:12.has the engine and scope and he can go from any stride. It makes me look
:30:13. > :30:18.good when yourself sat on a horse that can do that for you. It could
:30:19. > :30:25.be a great day for her. Here is Tom McEwan.
:30:26. > :30:31.Quite brave, and stay positive throughout. They are flying, this
:30:32. > :30:35.horses really responding. And here is Clare Abbott coming down to the
:30:36. > :30:40.finish, this has been an exhilarating round to watch. It has
:30:41. > :30:44.had me on the edge of my seat, but brilliant performance, into third
:30:45. > :30:47.position, a bit over the time. She is giving him a pat, I thought she
:30:48. > :30:56.looked a bit serious there, but she has had a fantastic outing. The
:30:57. > :31:07.world number one, he needs little introduction, Michael Jung, riding
:31:08. > :31:12.Sam, as he is known. He would have been higher in the dressage had it
:31:13. > :31:17.not been for a small error. He is the FBI number one in the world. He
:31:18. > :31:21.is pretty special, they are a great partnership, and they know each
:31:22. > :31:25.other so well. Michael having a little look down to the right, and
:31:26. > :31:30.not quite sure what he was worried about there, but you will remember a
:31:31. > :31:37.couple of years ago he came into this water bit quick, tipped over
:31:38. > :31:44.and broke his ankle, but a is sitting up, pops over that and very
:31:45. > :31:48.quickly back into the rhythm. This is Tom McEwen, it has been a really
:31:49. > :31:54.good round so far, as Tom comes round to take the Trout Hatchery.
:31:55. > :32:03.That was a bit of a flyer in, quite brave. Luckily he saw that, to be
:32:04. > :32:13.ideal that is five strides, but he took one out, that is flying. Sam is
:32:14. > :32:17.at Storm Doris. Easy! What is there to say? Perfection. In the start box
:32:18. > :32:25.and off riding Arctic Soul, 32-year-old Gemma Tattersall.
:32:26. > :32:28.Dressage score of 43, put her in eighth place, she could be a
:32:29. > :32:33.contender. I would think a serious contender, one of the fastest
:32:34. > :32:36.courses there is -- one of the fastest horses there is
:32:37. > :32:46.cross-country. He has come up with probably his best ever dressage test
:32:47. > :32:50.this weekend. And Gemma has set up the most brilliant partnership with
:32:51. > :32:58.him. They were fifth in this competition in 2014. Gemma won the
:32:59. > :33:03.national championship Sergas all this year. She has not been feeling
:33:04. > :33:11.too well, a bit of a cold, but that won't stop her. Here is Michael Jung
:33:12. > :33:22.on Sam. And right on the time. We he should be for the minute marker.
:33:23. > :33:32.And accuracy and perfection yet again. Just so fluid. Sam is 17
:33:33. > :33:36.years old, but showing no signs of it. He looks like a young horse as
:33:37. > :33:44.he gallops across, ears pricked. Wanting to get on with the job,
:33:45. > :33:49.brilliant jumping there. Actually, that is quite interesting, that is a
:33:50. > :33:56.nice four in there, and actually, they got five. Tom McEwen and Toledo
:33:57. > :34:01.De Kerser, into the Leaf Pit. He is in a bit of a hurry. Well held, that
:34:02. > :34:06.was a brilliant bit of riding, but he seems in a hurry. I think he is
:34:07. > :34:08.trying to get inside that time. Gemma Tattersall and Arctic Soul.
:34:09. > :34:20.Into Storm Doris. How do you think that is riding so
:34:21. > :34:29.far? Apart from Mr Nicholson, it has been great. Michael Jung coming to
:34:30. > :34:36.the Maltings. Very tight, economic line, wasting not a second. Keeping
:34:37. > :34:41.the flow, great jumping. And coming down toward the finish now, Tom
:34:42. > :34:45.McEwen and Toledo De Kerser, you can just see the clock ticking down, and
:34:46. > :34:50.he will be pretty close. He might get a penalty or a two, but nothing
:34:51. > :34:54.too significant. That is an outstanding round, and he goes into
:34:55. > :34:57.the leaders well, Tom McEwen, it just 16 years old, and he has all
:34:58. > :35:05.the talent. Gemma Tattersall and Arctic Soul
:35:06. > :35:11.other Cottesmore Leap. Easy! That is bread and butter for this horse,
:35:12. > :35:18.that kind of offence. And then already swinging left, socially is
:35:19. > :35:22.going to the big brush oxers. And you couldn't see quite a long two
:35:23. > :35:28.strides there, they have got to keep riding them. You don't like them, do
:35:29. > :35:31.you? I don't, I prefer the right, but I haven't seen anyone jumps yet.
:35:32. > :35:45.Here is Michael at the try Khacheridi. -- trout hatchery. Oh,
:35:46. > :35:53.nobody saw that coming. They certainly didn't. Good jump in, just
:35:54. > :35:56.looked to me a little bit like Michael was holding for an extra
:35:57. > :36:02.stride, didn't give the horse much of a chance to see the fence, and he
:36:03. > :36:13.said, what's that about? And Michael has decided to call it a day on Sam.
:36:14. > :36:17.You'd think such, such a combination wouldn't make mistakes, but anything
:36:18. > :36:21.can happen. Gemma Tattersall is ten seconds inside the time as she comes
:36:22. > :36:26.through Rolex. And looking great. This horse as I said is very fast,
:36:27. > :36:33.he is a thoroughbred horse and just keeps galloping as he comes to the
:36:34. > :36:38.Maltings gate. A little rattle, but nothing to worry about. He didn't
:36:39. > :36:42.cut much ice on the racecourse in four appearances, this horse, but he
:36:43. > :36:46.has certainly made the grade as an event. That is what is so fantastic,
:36:47. > :36:52.we have so many great horses coming forward to eventing. And here is
:36:53. > :36:59.Zara Tindall on High Kingdom. A bit of a renaissance from Zara this
:37:00. > :37:03.year, she burst onto the eventing seen in 2013 on Toytown, and she is
:37:04. > :37:08.fired up and ready to get her career rolling again. She really got after
:37:09. > :37:13.him as she came out of the water and said, focus and keep your mind on
:37:14. > :37:25.the job, boy. Such a brilliant ride across the country, Zara, and this
:37:26. > :37:30.great little horse bred in Ireland. Third in the 4-star at Lexington
:37:31. > :37:37.this year. Tenth at Burghley in 2011. Quite a long that corner, but
:37:38. > :37:43.the horses so reliable and stayed so straight on his line.
:37:44. > :37:50.And away they go, High Kingdom and Zara Tindall, as we pick up Gemma
:37:51. > :37:54.Tattersall and Arctic Soul at the Trout Hatchery. Showing that he is a
:37:55. > :37:59.thoroughbred, and he is not going to run out of speed and stamina, he is
:38:00. > :38:05.still flying. And quite boldly into the water, just got tipped forward,
:38:06. > :38:08.decided to go the long route, and still flying. Do you think that was
:38:09. > :38:12.premeditated, or do you think she had to improvise? I kind of feel she
:38:13. > :38:17.had to improvise. I think she would have been intending going direct,
:38:18. > :38:24.but just watch again as she comes round. Focused, it was quite forward
:38:25. > :38:28.and a bit of a big stride in, and he just fires his back end up in the
:38:29. > :38:33.air, tips in forward, and she has no choice but to go long.
:38:34. > :38:37.CLARE BALDING: We have managed to get hold of Michael Jung. Tell us
:38:38. > :38:44.what happened in the Trout Hatchery with Sam. I was too slow in my
:38:45. > :38:49.reactions, and I lost the reins, and it was really my fault. So the horse
:38:50. > :38:52.cannot see the jump really, and the question was what he had to do. You
:38:53. > :38:57.made a decision very quickly to retire him. He is getting on in age.
:38:58. > :39:03.Do you still plan to compete him again this year somewhere? , Think
:39:04. > :39:09.so. Now we have a really long drive home, so we can think about
:39:10. > :39:13.everything, and then I will ride him at home but he gave me a very good
:39:14. > :39:18.feeling around the course, so this was just a stupid mistake from me,
:39:19. > :39:20.not the horse, and I think he galloped seven minutes, so I think
:39:21. > :39:31.he can do another round this season. It can even happen to the best.
:39:32. > :39:37.Philosophical Michael Jung. Here is Zara Tindall at Cottesmore Leap.
:39:38. > :39:41.Along one there, but High Kingdom responding. Now, does she go right
:39:42. > :39:47.or left here, right of the skinny brushes, left over the oxers? She
:39:48. > :39:52.has gone right! It makes me feel good, her dad must have told to go
:39:53. > :40:01.right! Gemma Tattersall and Arctic Soul. Coming to Discovery Valley.
:40:02. > :40:08.Nice, quiet jump, a good bit of accuracy, great riding, good
:40:09. > :40:13.reactions from Gemma there. Zara is right on the time where she should
:40:14. > :40:16.be she is to make the optimum. She takes a stride out, still gets the
:40:17. > :40:22.right one to the corner. She knows her horse well and she did the right
:40:23. > :40:30.thing. Gemma Tattersall at the Leaf Pit. Most of them going the direct
:40:31. > :40:35.route here. It is quite risky for that drift right at the second
:40:36. > :40:49.skinny, but no problem for Gemma, and she is still kicking an. And the
:40:50. > :41:00.Trout Hatchery furs are. Nicely balanced, good jump in, and... Oh,
:41:01. > :41:08.no! He looked perfect, and he just slightly drifted right. Zara is not
:41:09. > :41:15.terribly happy about that. She is livid. A little temper tantrum
:41:16. > :41:19.there. He leaves his right leg down, catches on the brush, and Zara had
:41:20. > :41:25.no choice but to be a jetted out to the left. Disappointment. And then
:41:26. > :41:30.you have the ignominy of walking soaking wet pass the crowd, and she
:41:31. > :41:34.is being very good and letting people take pictures. She has
:41:35. > :41:38.obviously said something funny to them, she is cheerful. Now, Gemma
:41:39. > :41:42.Tattersall and Arctic Soul have a minute to get home from here if they
:41:43. > :41:47.are going to make the time and incur no time penalties, and this horse's
:41:48. > :41:51.round has been exquisite so far. Brilliant, and a minute from the
:41:52. > :41:55.main arena, should make the time, all being well. Certainly as we have
:41:56. > :41:59.said, this thoroughbred can keep galloping right the way to the line,
:42:00. > :42:05.and she is riding for the finish here. 18, 17 seconds, one job to go,
:42:06. > :42:12.and she is turning to that already. I would say she is pretty OK on the
:42:13. > :42:16.time. Brilliant performance from Arctic Soul, and relax before she
:42:17. > :42:19.even crosses the finish line. Even with a cold, she has done a
:42:20. > :42:25.brilliant performance, gone into the lead. That propels her to the top of
:42:26. > :42:30.the leaderboard with 43 penalties, she finishes on her dressage score
:42:31. > :42:37.ahead of Tom McEwen, Tina Cook, it is one, two, three, four for Great
:42:38. > :42:41.Britain so far. Boyd Martin, he is Australian-born
:42:42. > :42:48.but is now based in America, an Steady Eddie. 21st equal after the
:42:49. > :42:56.dressage, he was 48th on his Burghley debut in 2011. There was an
:42:57. > :43:02.overreach brute lying in the water before that turn under the bridge. I
:43:03. > :43:06.don't think we need to worry about that at this particular moment. We
:43:07. > :43:13.have seen one thoroughbred, Arctic Soul, just finish, this horse also
:43:14. > :43:19.came off the track. Ran 36 times in Australia. Modest success, he is New
:43:20. > :43:21.Zealand bred. 36 runs, so he must be quite tough. Extremely tough, and
:43:22. > :43:31.that was before he was four. CLARE BALDING: This is our new
:43:32. > :43:37.leader, Gemma Tattersall with a blue Ligtlee around on Arctic Soul. You
:43:38. > :43:41.had to think quickly a couple of times. I had to think quickly a
:43:42. > :43:45.couple of times, and I have a horrendous cold and a bit of a chest
:43:46. > :43:49.infection, so it was quite a challenge, and I started feeling out
:43:50. > :43:52.of breath, and I kept putting my hands on the reins and saying, boy,
:43:53. > :43:57.you have to do this for me, because I felt like I couldn't help him, but
:43:58. > :44:01.he has got such an engine, and we have got such a good relationship, I
:44:02. > :44:06.just pointed him and he said, there are the flags, here we go. Brilliant
:44:07. > :44:11.round from Gemma Tattersall, here is Boyd Martin and Steady Eddie as they
:44:12. > :44:17.come towards the Cottesmore Leap. This is my first year as co-coach
:44:18. > :44:21.for the cross-country riding of the American team, and I've told him to
:44:22. > :44:28.go to the right here. Let's hope it works. Brilliant jump in, and I
:44:29. > :44:32.still believe that's the softest, kindest route for the horses. It's
:44:33. > :44:36.good to see they are still respecting your authority after a
:44:37. > :44:43.couple of days in the job! They will soon get rid of me, don't worry.
:44:44. > :44:50.This is Izzy Taylor and Trevidden. 12th after the dressage, this,
:44:51. > :44:56.nation. And this is a combination informed, won three big events this
:44:57. > :45:00.season. They won that CIC three star this year, and certainly they are
:45:01. > :45:06.informed. Boyd Martin is going well timewise an Steady Eddie. We want
:45:07. > :45:11.him to go for a stride here, but I told him he must get five, and he
:45:12. > :45:13.swings back and gets the four there, perfect. He must still like me at
:45:14. > :45:23.the moment! There is still time. Ymansky, This is a thoroughbred
:45:24. > :45:28.horse. He thinks the horse will keep galloping right to the line. He is
:45:29. > :45:37.going to make sure he keeps up on the minute markers. A good turn
:45:38. > :45:44.there. Nice jump. Continues with that brilliant stride. That
:45:45. > :45:53.combination at the maltings has posed very few problems so far.
:45:54. > :45:59.Great to see her with a lovely horse. She has always been a top
:46:00. > :46:05.rider for me. Hasn't always had the easiest of the horses. But she adds
:46:06. > :46:11.a stride in there. She doesn't get a great jump over the brushes. But the
:46:12. > :46:18.horse is quick and sharp. Boyd Martin and Steady Eddie at the trout
:46:19. > :46:27.hatchery. It maybe steady Boyd in a minute. Quite quick in. But locks on
:46:28. > :46:37.to that brush. A bit of finger top control from Boyd. But the horse
:46:38. > :46:43.responded and reacted brilliantly. Boyd's countryman, Lauren Kiefer
:46:44. > :46:51.also riding for the United States. An excellent dressage stage on
:46:52. > :46:57.Veronica, a Dutch-bred mare. This pair have twice been second in
:46:58. > :47:05.Kentucky at the big competition. Has had the odd mishap. Lauren's come
:47:06. > :47:12.off her a couple of times. Had a bit of a fall earlier this summer. I
:47:13. > :47:21.would expect to see her kicking on and going for the time. Especially
:47:22. > :47:27.with such a brilliant dressage test. Coming to the lion's bridge. Nice
:47:28. > :47:34.jump in. Good, quick reaction from Lauren there. Picked up the reins
:47:35. > :47:50.quickly. Back in balance. Accelerates away. Here is Izzy
:47:51. > :47:55.Taylor. Still gets a five in there. You can hear her clicking, saying,
:47:56. > :48:05.come on. A bit of adjustment. He has a huge stride. It is not surprising
:48:06. > :48:12.he is well under the clock. Lauren Kieffer at Storm Doris. Looking
:48:13. > :48:20.good. Back with Izzy Taylor now. One of the busiest riders on the
:48:21. > :48:25.circuit. A big, scopy horse this. Fighting a bit with the contact at
:48:26. > :48:31.times. You can hear her saying she is going long. Good call. Watching
:48:32. > :48:34.I'm wondering whether a martingale wouldn't help with this horse.
:48:35. > :48:39.Having said that, stumbled on landing. I think it would help the
:48:40. > :48:43.balance a bit. But she has probably tried it and it might not be the
:48:44. > :48:49.right answer. Does he look a challenging horse to organise? That
:48:50. > :48:53.is the thing, when she goes to set him up, he puts his head up and
:48:54. > :49:02.bites the contact. But Izzy know what is she is doing. Lauren Kieffer
:49:03. > :49:08.is going quite slowly here. That will be a problem. She needs to pick
:49:09. > :49:13.up some time or she will incur time penalties. You hear her saying, good
:49:14. > :49:22.girl, but she was a minute and 20 seconds under the time at badminton.
:49:23. > :49:30.Boyd Martin close to the time as they come through the jumps in the
:49:31. > :49:37.arena. He is kicking on. He hasn't got the gallop he had earlier on.
:49:38. > :49:43.Izzy Taylor and Trevidden to discovery valley. A great bit of
:49:44. > :49:47.control riding from Izzy. Got a little chipped in extra stride. But
:49:48. > :50:04.there was no doubt he was going to jump that fence. Another American,
:50:05. > :50:11.Lynne Symansky, riding Donner. It is her second trip to Burghley. She was
:50:12. > :50:18.11th after the dressage with a score of.5. Not always found the time
:50:19. > :50:24.easy. The horse is quite short-striding. He is quite busy in
:50:25. > :50:29.the way she goes. Lynn has to keep the pressure on and not give him the
:50:30. > :50:35.chance to add any extra strides. She always favoured going to the bright.
:50:36. > :50:42.He has a thing about right-hand corners. Here is Boyd Martin and
:50:43. > :50:47.Steady Eddie. He is certainly riding a finish coming to the last. But he
:50:48. > :50:53.is going to be over the time. But only just. Into third position. Five
:50:54. > :50:59.seconds over. He will be happy with that. That is a great round. From
:51:00. > :51:07.the Australian-born American. In that makes any sense. With a
:51:08. > :51:10.Scottish coach. The American-born American, also with a Scottish
:51:11. > :51:16.coach. No where near going to make that turn. So the clock time
:51:17. > :51:23.ticking. She was already down on the clock. This won't help. Jumping
:51:24. > :51:31.well, but just lacking that extra bit of speed.
:51:32. > :51:37.Izzy Taylor, well over a minute to go. If the jumping's OK, I would say
:51:38. > :51:41.this is another one going to be inside the time. Great to see her
:51:42. > :51:53.with a top horse. I'm so excited for her.
:51:54. > :52:04.Lynn Symansky and Donner. She comes down to Storm Doris. She is not
:52:05. > :52:10.happy with the right-hand corners, but she is going the quick route. So
:52:11. > :52:15.we will hope for the best that she stays on the line. A bit of a drift
:52:16. > :52:28.right, but she held on to that left rein and got away with it. Izzy
:52:29. > :52:38.Taylor coming to the last. She still has 10 seconds in hand. Goes into
:52:39. > :52:40.second place. Just behind Jemma Tattersall, who is less than a show
:52:41. > :52:52.jump ahead of Izzy. Here is Lynn Symansky, going well so
:52:53. > :52:57.far. On the time at the moment. She was always going to go the left-hand
:52:58. > :53:02.route. She wanted to avoid that big corner at the bottom of the bank. So
:53:03. > :53:08.wasting a few seconds, but actually does it very quickly and is quickly
:53:09. > :53:15.back into a rhythm. Another rider changing her whip for the corner.
:53:16. > :53:21.Good to see. Lauren Kieffer and the mare Veronica. She will be
:53:22. > :53:27.disappointed, it was an excellent dressage round, but this has been
:53:28. > :53:34.too slow. Yes, it was great jumping, she did a good job, but wasted too
:53:35. > :53:41.much time. I'm disappointed for her. Here is Piggy French. Piggy's
:53:42. > :53:47.another one, great to see her back at the top. Had a good ride in the
:53:48. > :53:55.European Championships as an individual in Poland. This mare went
:53:56. > :54:00.so well at Braham earlier this year. She has to be excited about it.
:54:01. > :54:04.Ninth after the dressage. She is one knocking on the door. A good fast
:54:05. > :54:09.round would be brilliant. She said this mare can be quite challenging.
:54:10. > :54:14.She tends to have a low head carriage and can get worked up. But
:54:15. > :54:20.she looks on best behaviour. It is a big year for Piggy. A come back
:54:21. > :54:26.year. It is and there is no one better, on the right horse she could
:54:27. > :54:34.be in front of anyone. Looking fantastic at the moment. Great
:54:35. > :54:38.stride. Only three horses clear inside the time, one is Trevidden.
:54:39. > :54:47.You're in second place. Thank you, he was super. He loves to gallop and
:54:48. > :54:52.finished full of running. He is a horse relative think new to you. Yes
:54:53. > :54:56.this time last year we kind of met for the fist time. We did click
:54:57. > :55:04.straightaway. But it takes time to get to know each other and all our
:55:05. > :55:13.little quirks. But I love him. You can see why. Here is Vanir Kamira
:55:14. > :55:24.and Piggy French at Storm Doris. Doesn't get much better than that,
:55:25. > :55:29.does it? Line Symansky and Donner. He is a thoroughbred horse. He can
:55:30. > :55:34.add strides. He has not got a huge length of stride. But Lynn focussed.
:55:35. > :55:37.Good turn and brilliant jump over that final element and she is
:55:38. > :55:41.kicking on. She is going to try for this time. I love the expression.
:55:42. > :55:44.Look at the crowd's expression, never mind the rider. They're all
:55:45. > :55:58.focussed as well. Grim determination. She sees her spot. A
:55:59. > :56:05.bit far off. But Donner responds. That is Andrew Nicholson passed fit
:56:06. > :56:18.to ride after his fall earlier. Here his on the legendary horse. He has
:56:19. > :56:21.won here three consecutive types here -- times here. A brilliant
:56:22. > :56:47.career. He has had a brilliant owner. It was
:56:48. > :57:06.great that the horse won at badminton. You feel relaxed watching
:57:07. > :57:10.them. Lynn Symansky and Donner. Quick, tight turn and held the line
:57:11. > :57:15.beautifully there. Look at her, straightaway she is in that forward
:57:16. > :57:22.position, back galloping. A lot of the riders saying that final element
:57:23. > :57:28.is coming out at this from nowhere. Let's check Piggy French's time as
:57:29. > :57:33.she heads to the dairy farm. She is very good. A bit of a wobble in
:57:34. > :57:43.front of that corner. But a lot of height over it. Andrew Nicholson,
:57:44. > :57:58.this is where he had his fall earlier. Piggy French at the
:57:59. > :58:02.maltings. A good turn. Can those uprights be sometimes more
:58:03. > :58:07.difficult? Yes, because you're galloping and the riders find it
:58:08. > :58:16.easy to kick on to an oxer. An upright gate you can get
:58:17. > :58:20.dephenomenontive. -- Defensive. They entered the arena with 55 seconds to
:58:21. > :58:29.go. They should be close to the time. It has been a good round so
:58:30. > :58:33.far. There is no question about the most experienced ride here, its Sir
:58:34. > :58:39.Mark Todd. He has won the title five times, but not since 1999. But his
:58:40. > :58:44.dressage test has put him in pole position. He is our leader after
:58:45. > :58:53.dress Ang and that means if all goes well he still will be tonight. There
:58:54. > :59:05.he is. Living legend, Sir Mark Todd. 61 years young! Off he goes. On
:59:06. > :59:15.Leonidas II. How brilliant to be leading after the dressage. Puts the
:59:16. > :59:21.pressure on though. Lynn Symansky and Donner. They will incur some
:59:22. > :59:26.time Pennell tips, but not many -- penalties, but not many. She goes
:59:27. > :59:31.into third place and the American coach, cross country coach is
:59:32. > :59:35.absolutely elated. But we will keep him in the commentary box! I can't
:59:36. > :59:43.do this on my own. Here is Piggy French. Kicking on boldly into the
:59:44. > :59:47.trout hatchery. Really determined. Holds the horse left. It was
:59:48. > :59:53.drifting right. You could see it hanging to the right. She opened her
:59:54. > :00:04.left rein to stay straight. Took the flag out, but was OK. A good jump
:00:05. > :00:11.in. Some of the expressions on the riders it would frighten you off.
:00:12. > :00:16.They're so focussed. The horse drifts right, she says stay
:00:17. > :00:33.straight, the horse says, OK, I will try. Sir Mark Todd and Leonida.
:00:34. > :00:42.That was a fence that I thought was flat and wide going in there, and
:00:43. > :00:47.Leonidas didn't go up much in the air, went very flat, but a good job
:00:48. > :00:53.over the corner, and nobody has a better Ivan Toney. Here is Andrew
:00:54. > :01:02.Nicholson. Just a little over the time at the moment. He is still
:01:03. > :01:06.jumping well. Just maybe not galloping as freely and easily as he
:01:07. > :01:16.has the past, but he is getting on in years, all of us. Piggy French
:01:17. > :01:19.coming to Discovery Valley. I thought she was rather brave, the
:01:20. > :01:24.horse fortunately didn't get too high, and she made a brilliant job
:01:25. > :01:29.of the turn. There were gasps from the crowd, but she lucks to have
:01:30. > :01:39.matters under control. And that is what counts, you have to know your
:01:40. > :01:51.horse. Andrew and Nari know each other very well. Effortless jumping.
:01:52. > :02:01.Mark Todd on Leonidas. I think that was a
:02:02. > :02:11.miss, but he got away with it! The horses catch the brush with their
:02:12. > :02:23.hindlegs, and it tips them onto the forehand. Into the Trout Hatchery,
:02:24. > :02:27.Nereo and Andrew Richardson. And he took a stride out, I don't think you
:02:28. > :02:41.meant to, but Nereo said, I've got it! Piggy French and veneer Kammerer
:02:42. > :02:49.down into the Leaf Pit. She did a brilliant job of steering, but horse
:02:50. > :02:57.said, I can see the flags, relax! Mark Todd and Leonidas coming to the
:02:58. > :03:08.Rolex. Pretty brave for an old man! And here is Piggy French now. Coming
:03:09. > :03:13.up to the finish. And they will get a time fault or two, but she is
:03:14. > :03:17.pretty near the time, and she will be thrilled with that, this mayor
:03:18. > :03:26.has produced a brilliant round. She goes into third. Gemma Tattersall is
:03:27. > :03:38.still in the lead with 43 penalties, Izzy Taylor just behind, and now
:03:39. > :03:42.Mark Todd and Leonidas coming to the Trout Hatchery. He didn't get very
:03:43. > :03:50.high there, he went right through the top of the brush. Good jump in.
:03:51. > :04:00.Looked as though he planned to do that, but didn't really line-up that
:04:01. > :04:04.skinny brush at all. He is not getting very high now, I have to
:04:05. > :04:08.say, looking a little weary on his legs, he kind of slithers over that
:04:09. > :04:13.fence. I suppose there is a fine line between economy and effort and
:04:14. > :04:18.not making enough effort. Hope you get over the top of the fence is at
:04:19. > :04:22.least. Andrew Nicholson and Nereo, on their way home, perhaps just a
:04:23. > :04:27.little slower than we had anticipated. I think so. He hasn't
:04:28. > :04:31.been galloping in the way we are used to this horse galloping, but he
:04:32. > :04:35.is still pretty close to the time. He has only got 45 seconds from now,
:04:36. > :04:51.I don't think he will quite make it. CLARE BALDING: Piggy French is back,
:04:52. > :04:58.and back in style! She is fabulous. I feel a bit emotional, actually,
:04:59. > :05:05.because I just, she never feels like that scope E, and she got out there
:05:06. > :05:09.and was incredible, it is great to be here and great to have a horse of
:05:10. > :05:16.that calibre to make it feel quite easy, she is one of those little
:05:17. > :05:20.mares that you feel will dive you to get through the flags, and she says,
:05:21. > :05:26.it is all right, mum, I've got you! You don't get many like that, she is
:05:27. > :05:30.a real trier. Back now with Andrew Nicholson, and he is going to pick
:05:31. > :05:34.up a few time penalties here on Nereo, but still a good round with a
:05:35. > :05:37.good dressage score means that he shouldn't be too far off the
:05:38. > :05:43.leaders. He will be a little frustrated he hasn't made the time,
:05:44. > :05:47.but they worked so hard, and then we have had a few nights of rain. It is
:05:48. > :05:51.probably more tiring and softer than we think it is after the rain. It
:05:52. > :05:55.looks perfect but perhaps the horses are going in a little bit further
:05:56. > :05:59.than we think. One of the riders saying that the track rides a lot
:06:00. > :06:05.softer than it walks. I think that is probably very true. Into
:06:06. > :06:11.Discovery Valley for Mark Todd, and oh! What a day full of surprises,
:06:12. > :06:15.first Michael Jung and now some Mark Todd. The horse has removed his
:06:16. > :06:20.bridle. He gets a little inverted, get his head up in the air, doesn't
:06:21. > :06:27.look at the landing side, so he guesses, crumbles and a spectacular
:06:28. > :06:36.role from Mark Todd. Who would have thought it? And their ends Burghley
:06:37. > :06:47.2017 for Mark Todd. He is Tim Price, another Kiwi, and a prolifically
:06:48. > :06:52.successful one as well. This is a particularly good cross-country
:06:53. > :06:56.course, Ringwood Sky Boy, a quality horse with a good gallop. He will be
:06:57. > :07:03.trying to get inside the time if possible. There is a long way to go
:07:04. > :07:10.yet. Tim was enjoying a lovely round earlier until an annoying error late
:07:11. > :07:17.on the course. Kind of tired horse error as much as anything on his
:07:18. > :07:21.first horse. But he is locking onto these fences, and not wasting any
:07:22. > :07:28.time, keeping a really good with at the start of this course.
:07:29. > :07:33.CLARE BALDING: We saw at Badminton that you can move up in the
:07:34. > :07:39.showjumping phase, you did it there. You have a few to overtake again
:07:40. > :07:43.here. I would like to have gone on, but Nereo is like me, getting older,
:07:44. > :07:49.he doesn't have the Facey used to have -- the pace he used to have. He
:07:50. > :07:54.jumped the last two fences in Matt Oakley, which gives you a good
:07:55. > :07:58.feeling for tomorrow, and all I have to do is what I can do, and
:07:59. > :08:05.hopefully we jumped a clear round, and it is up to the others to do the
:08:06. > :08:09.same. Well, the day ending on a significantly happier note than it
:08:10. > :08:13.started for Andrew Nicholson after the fall earlier, Nereo putting the
:08:14. > :08:17.respectable round in the cross-country. Here is Tim Price
:08:18. > :08:26.again. Coming to those two brush fences. And another one to favour my
:08:27. > :08:31.route. It is much more pleasant to watch, the right-hand route. It has
:08:32. > :08:34.a ramp on the landing of the take-off platform for the second
:08:35. > :08:38.element, so the horses are jumping a better. Al Pathfinder is back after
:08:39. > :08:42.that brilliant round on Star Witness, Tina Cook is riding the
:08:43. > :08:47.horse that gave her a better dressage score but is less
:08:48. > :08:53.experienced at this level, Calvino. They are both 12-year-olds, but he
:08:54. > :08:58.is the less experienced horse, and as we have said, Tina is in flying
:08:59. > :09:02.form. And the horse maybe a little green in places, but he couldn't
:09:03. > :09:06.have a better rider on top to help him build his confidence, and look
:09:07. > :09:13.at that. A great job there lovely attitude. Tim Price, Ringwood Sky
:09:14. > :09:21.Boy. They are right where they should be on the clock as they come
:09:22. > :09:24.to Rolex. Nice five strides and moves forward quietly for the four,
:09:25. > :09:33.a little twist over the corner, but good jumping.
:09:34. > :09:42.Moving on now to the Maltings. This is really a slow me down fence, it
:09:43. > :09:47.is Mark Phillips idea of not breaking the rhythm but making the
:09:48. > :09:52.riders ride slower and do some turns so that they don't just keep
:09:53. > :09:56.galloping everywhere. It has ridden incredibly well all day, I don't
:09:57. > :10:01.know that we have seen a problem. Now Tina Cook to the new Storm Doris
:10:02. > :10:11.fence. It may not be that experienced, but
:10:12. > :10:18.that was pretty near-perfect at Doris. Tim Price at the Trout
:10:19. > :10:22.Hatchery. Another one who gets very high over that brush, it is huge and
:10:23. > :10:31.it sits in a bit of a hole, and it is a big fence.
:10:32. > :10:38.And again, didn't get very high over that, but a brilliant bit of riding,
:10:39. > :10:43.and the horse went to argue and Tim said, no, turn, and then he left him
:10:44. > :10:49.alone to get on with the job. Beautifully rhythmic flow to this
:10:50. > :10:53.round. It is good. It is always fascinating watching the horses,
:10:54. > :10:56.because look at that. He met that perfectly, and you can see a little
:10:57. > :11:02.bit of arguing with the horses head, and then he turns and says right,
:11:03. > :11:10.there you go, help yourself. And he kind of dives over it, but he jumps
:11:11. > :11:14.it well enough. Now, our final competitor is Oliver Townend on the
:11:15. > :11:20.10-year old grey Ballaghmor Class, hugely promising young horse. And a
:11:21. > :11:31.rider who made a real splash here at Burghley, no pun intended. Made his
:11:32. > :11:37.first Burghley and Badminton to boot. A little green, possibly, this
:11:38. > :11:41.horse, but he has all the gallop at all the jumpy needs to get around
:11:42. > :11:45.here, it is whether the accumulative effect of the course of this
:11:46. > :11:50.standard is going to tell on the horse or not, but Oliver certainly
:11:51. > :11:56.set-off meaning to try to get the time, look at that determination.
:11:57. > :12:03.Always quickly back into his rhythm. Locks on the line, sees a good one,
:12:04. > :12:07.and lovely jumping. And after the dressage, Oliver and Ted Mack one
:12:08. > :12:13.were placed in sixth with a score of 40.2, one place ahead of them,
:12:14. > :12:17.Kristina Cook and Calvino on 39.6, so good rounds from either and they
:12:18. > :12:21.should be players. And what a great strike from Tina at Cottesmore Leap.
:12:22. > :12:27.That was beautifully done as she turns again, favours the left-hand
:12:28. > :12:32.side that gets a bit close, and oh! You can't say that was a third
:12:33. > :12:37.strike, it was a bit of nothing, but Tina kept her balance, kept her
:12:38. > :12:47.patience, and the horse did his job. Tim Price, Ringwood Sky Boy. All
:12:48. > :12:55.very smooth so far. Smooth is good as long as it's fast enough. He is
:12:56. > :13:04.certainly galloping on well. Here he is now coming to the Leaf Pit. Add a
:13:05. > :13:09.little bit of trouble earlier today, so oh gosh makes that turn. That was
:13:10. > :13:15.a good bit of riding, but a brilliant horse to help him out. And
:13:16. > :13:18.as the day has gone on, the Leaf Pit looks totally different depending on
:13:19. > :13:22.how many sun is coming through the trees, the shadows are totally
:13:23. > :13:24.different. That is something you have to think about, and the riders
:13:25. > :13:28.should walk the course at the time of day they plan to ride to give an
:13:29. > :13:37.idea of where the sun is going to be. Tina Cook Rolex. That didn't
:13:38. > :13:44.look like a young, green horse to me, that was a bit of class riding
:13:45. > :13:48.and great jumping. Now, Tim Price is just starting to pick up a few time
:13:49. > :13:52.penalties as he comes to the final obstacle, but this is a good round,
:13:53. > :13:55.and we will see where it puts him. He has just had a check on the
:13:56. > :14:00.watch, he has a few time penalties, but it puts him in third, excellent
:14:01. > :14:10.round. Brilliant round, he will be very happy with that. Oliver Townend
:14:11. > :14:14.and Ballaghmor Class. Another one with a brilliant strikes. It is so
:14:15. > :14:19.good if you get a good striker that big brush, because it is a massive
:14:20. > :14:22.ditch and fence, and it just saves energy, every time a horse touches
:14:23. > :14:28.offence, it saps that energy out of them. He has spoken so highly of
:14:29. > :14:32.this horse and the ability he believes the horse has. Tina Cook
:14:33. > :14:35.and Calvino, just a little bit of a fight to get his head up, down that
:14:36. > :14:47.hill running to the Trout Hatchery, got a little low. She has done a
:14:48. > :14:54.good job to set him up. Low to that final element, but need jumping for
:14:55. > :14:56.this stage in the course. The determination. Positivity. The
:14:57. > :15:10.balance. And get the job done. Oliver Townend, Ballaghmor Class,
:15:11. > :15:18.how is he doing for time, this horse? Very well. We wondered if he
:15:19. > :15:25.might be green, but it doesn't look like it so far, does he? Fantastic.
:15:26. > :15:35.Tim can have price, a few time faults and you must have known that
:15:36. > :15:40.would happen. Yes it is about managing him at the fences. He
:15:41. > :15:45.throws his heart over first you have to manage you can stand up on the
:15:46. > :15:49.other side. But I loov him. When it comes to the clock it makes it
:15:50. > :15:57.difficult. I started to press and I was happy that he was able to answer
:15:58. > :16:06.and keep trying for me. Still a huge crowd here. And there has been a
:16:07. > :16:11.hold on the course, because, well, our American competitors, Lillian
:16:12. > :16:18.Heard, had a fall. But luckily Lillian was up. And her mount,
:16:19. > :16:23.Barnaby, up as well. But after a fairly long hold, a lengthy hold.
:16:24. > :16:28.Tina Cook has been restarted on Calvino. A horrible place to be
:16:29. > :16:32.held. Coming down to discovery valley and the horse will be
:16:33. > :16:38.thinking he is finished and has to start again. A good jump. Nice turn
:16:39. > :16:45.and just a stride wasn't there. And that is so criminal. Because if she
:16:46. > :16:49.hadn't been held that would not have been an issue. It is like cold
:16:50. > :16:56.starting an engine after a hold that long? Yes, very much so. Your horse
:16:57. > :17:01.has switched off. 15, 20 minutes she was held. The horse is switched off
:17:02. > :17:06.and he was in such cracking form. How frustrating that is for Tina?
:17:07. > :17:16.She can't let it get to her. But very annoying. You can see her head
:17:17. > :17:24.go down, another good dressage score for this man, Oliver Townend, this
:17:25. > :17:29.horse it living up to it name Ballaghmor Class. It is still
:17:30. > :17:36.galloping and wanting to get on with the job. Here is Tina. She is going
:17:37. > :17:42.the brave route. Locks on. Oh, and gets a perfect two strides. Even
:17:43. > :17:46.more frustrating. I think she believes this horse has a big event
:17:47. > :17:51.in him somewhere down the line somewhere in the future. Who knows
:17:52. > :17:56.what will happen with Ballaghmor Class, the last competitor on the
:17:57. > :18:04.course. A big jump. Just changes his mind and goes through the gap. That
:18:05. > :18:08.is going to eat away at his time. He wants to make it inside the time he
:18:09. > :18:18.will have to keep the pressure on this horse. Looking ahead. Big jump
:18:19. > :18:24.in. And it doesn't look as if he intended going direct. Very
:18:25. > :18:29.disappointing, finally we got a good dressage score and it was there for
:18:30. > :18:34.the taking. But not today. He started to get a bit low with you.
:18:35. > :18:37.Is that something he does? He can sometimes take chances at brush
:18:38. > :18:45.fences like that. Sometimes when you have soft brush and you have a stiff
:18:46. > :18:51.brush, it is hard for them to judge which is which. He gave the one
:18:52. > :18:57.before a got whack. Are you all right? I had a soft fall. I rolled
:18:58. > :19:00.off. Disappointing for all the connections and disappointing for
:19:01. > :19:07.me. I probably won't have too many more chances. But that's the way it
:19:08. > :19:11.goes. That's the way it went for Mark Todd and the way it went for
:19:12. > :19:16.Tina Cook with that unfortunate run out. But she has regrouped and it
:19:17. > :19:28.has been a good round other than that and through the arena she goes.
:19:29. > :19:31.Oliver Townend down to discovery valley. One of the final main
:19:32. > :19:37.questions on this course for this young horse. A big jump. Turns,
:19:38. > :19:42.Oliver makes it happen. He had a slap, slap on the right shoulder.
:19:43. > :19:51.Kept hold of the left rein and the horse responding brilliantly. Now,
:19:52. > :19:57.Tina, Calvino coming to the final fence. She is disappointed. The
:19:58. > :20:04.horse has a huge future. After the run out, she took the foot off the
:20:05. > :20:10.accelerator. So she got time faults. So she is thrilled. She still has
:20:11. > :20:14.two horses in the top 20. Here is Oliver Townend. The final major
:20:15. > :20:19.question for this young horse. Got it done brilliant. Now, can the
:20:20. > :20:26.horse keep galloping to the finishing line? He is normally
:20:27. > :20:33.honest and I got to that angle and he drifted left on a nothing stride.
:20:34. > :20:39.Just so frustrating. I just got him back so he didn't over-jump. Just...
:20:40. > :20:46.It looked silly, but I felt I was a long way off it and he switched off.
:20:47. > :20:52.It is unfortunate, because I was having a lovely man. Now this man
:20:53. > :20:57.has the stage all to himself, Oliver Townend. He has a minute to get
:20:58. > :21:04.home. If he goes clear, it will put him into the lead. The horse is
:21:05. > :21:08.still adjustable. It is three short strides to each element and he
:21:09. > :21:17.managed to shorten it and stay sharp and accelerate away. The horse
:21:18. > :21:23.looked less fatigued than those who went over. He is 10 years old, so he
:21:24. > :21:28.has an advantage youth-wise. Some young horses give you that much more
:21:29. > :21:33.as they get older they get crafty, like old guys like us. But look at
:21:34. > :21:38.that time. Is he going to be one second over? He is still in the
:21:39. > :21:42.lead. Fantastic performance from Oliver and this brilliant young
:21:43. > :21:47.horse. He has had so much faith in this horse, he told everyone how
:21:48. > :21:53.good he was. A punch in the air, a man high in confidence. And he has
:21:54. > :21:58.laughed last and he may yet be laughing longest. Oliver Townend
:21:59. > :22:09.into the lead after the cross country. It took until the very last
:22:10. > :22:14.rider to find out who will be our leaderer going into show jumping.
:22:15. > :22:23.That was sensation Hall. Particularly given how long you had
:22:24. > :22:27.the wait. Y. He is class. He does baby things, but he is very good.
:22:28. > :22:34.You said you thought this could be the most talented horse you have
:22:35. > :22:40.ever ridden. Did he feel like it out there? Yes he was babyish, he looked
:22:41. > :22:46.at the crowd and there is a lot of things to improve on.
:22:47. > :22:52.Confirmation that Oliver Townend lead the field as they head into the
:22:53. > :22:58.show jumping phase on Sunday afternoon. Gemma Tattersall in
:22:59. > :23:04.second. A strong British representation throughout.
:23:05. > :23:10.Before the final phase the riders are trying to get the best out of
:23:11. > :23:19.their partnership with their horse and some are turning to technology.
:23:20. > :23:23.Russell is a sports scientist and he specialises in biomechanics and the
:23:24. > :23:36.movement of the horse. What do you have on this horse? We have 2D
:23:37. > :23:40.motion captures and we have a inert ya measuring unit. They along the
:23:41. > :23:44.horse's back. They will look at how the horse's back is moving and how
:23:45. > :23:51.globally is the horse moving and is there anything we can do to help him
:23:52. > :23:58.and from a research point of view is there any equipment that could help
:23:59. > :24:06.us. Let's see this in action. This camera is capturing 400 frames her
:24:07. > :24:10.second and the human eye catches around 50 frames a second. So we are
:24:11. > :24:16.seeing thousand joints are moving and is the left side different to
:24:17. > :24:21.the right. We need to find out what is the horse's norm. And then we can
:24:22. > :24:26.make changes. We are looking at Imogen's position and we have got a
:24:27. > :24:30.visualised training jacket that has lines positioned that highlight
:24:31. > :24:34.straightness. There has been many studies looking at rider position
:24:35. > :24:39.and how riders are not aware of their position. So you can see you
:24:40. > :24:44.have the vertical line, the horizontal line and on the saddle we
:24:45. > :24:47.have a marker in the middle at the back and on the horse. We are trying
:24:48. > :24:52.to work out how the rider is in relation to the saddle and the
:24:53. > :24:56.horse's back. Your trying to achieve a better position from the rider and
:24:57. > :25:02.better freer movement from the horse? Yes, the simplest way to
:25:03. > :25:08.think about it, if you were on my shoulders and was sitting crooked,
:25:09. > :25:12.how would I move in a straight line. If I was on your shoulders you
:25:13. > :25:16.wouldn't be able to move! If you walked in a straight line, you would
:25:17. > :25:24.be wobbly and the horses are the same. The idea is to really fine
:25:25. > :25:29.tune what the, how the rider is sitting and working with others to
:25:30. > :25:32.optimise the rider. Having captured the shots, you feed it into the
:25:33. > :25:37.computer and it comes out with data you understand. What we are looking
:25:38. > :25:42.for is how does the rider and the horse line up. You can see that the
:25:43. > :25:48.rider is a little to the left. As a result we have a side bend of the
:25:49. > :25:57.rider's trunk to the right. This is something we would work with the
:25:58. > :26:00.rider. With a physio intervention, strength and conditioning
:26:01. > :26:07.intervention, we could look to improve the rider to optimise the
:26:08. > :26:13.whole system. This was capturing the high speed footage and you see the
:26:14. > :26:18.horse has the markers on and this is what is called digitisation and this
:26:19. > :26:22.will track the markers and this is capturing the horse's right side and
:26:23. > :26:27.we will compare the left-side data. What we are trying to determine is
:26:28. > :26:33.what are the asymmetries and can be done to improve them. It is the
:26:34. > :26:38.first time I thought equestrian sport is getting closer to Formula
:26:39. > :26:43.One and these are valuable horses competing for valuable prizes and
:26:44. > :26:47.gold at the Olympics and you need this level of technology. Look at
:26:48. > :26:55.the gold medal in Poland for the European team. Those are riders you
:26:56. > :26:59.have worked with? Yes my role is doing the performance analysis and
:27:00. > :27:03.at the start of the season we looked at riders working with the physios,
:27:04. > :27:09.the strength and conditioning, the saddler and it is amazing for the
:27:10. > :27:22.small part I played to see the athletes do so well. Now to the
:27:23. > :27:29.final phase, the showjumping. And I'm walking the course with Oliver
:27:30. > :27:33.Townend and Piggy French. We are going to walk what we have agreed is
:27:34. > :27:40.the most challenging part of the track is that right? Yes I think so.
:27:41. > :27:46.Remember we are trying to showjump poles after we raced them around a
:27:47. > :27:49.race track yesterday. It is trying to ride a horse after you have
:27:50. > :27:55.ridden the Grand National. You will have a lot of pace and this is where
:27:56. > :27:59.the problem starts. It is on a five-stride distance here. And you
:28:00. > :28:02.don't want to be too flat to the vertical. As soon as you have
:28:03. > :28:07.landed, you have to sit up sharp, because it is a short six strides to
:28:08. > :28:13.a square oxer. This is where you will see problems. Relative to most
:28:14. > :28:20.four stars you have ridden in, how difficult is this course? I think
:28:21. > :28:25.this is as tricky as you can get after you have gone around Burghley.
:28:26. > :28:32.The terrain takes it out of them and they might be tired. I think it is
:28:33. > :28:37.plenty tough enough. Is your mare a good showjumping on the final day.
:28:38. > :28:44.Well I wouldn't like to say, she is a trier and I will have to see how
:28:45. > :28:52.she is. Your horse produced a very exciting round for a young horse.
:28:53. > :28:56.How does he feel this morning? He feels if fresh, he is naive that
:28:57. > :29:01.will hopefully play into his part. He peoples as good as you could
:29:02. > :29:06.expect. How do you wear the pressure of an overnight leader? Well? I
:29:07. > :29:09.wouldn't go that far. I have been there before and it's gone my way
:29:10. > :29:15.and not gone my way. We will see. Best of luck. I hope they both come
:29:16. > :29:22.back safely and you're rights up there in the money. This is how
:29:23. > :29:51.tight it is at the top. Our top ten will go in reverse
:29:52. > :29:56.order. So we will start with Tina Cook on Star Witness. It is a chill
:29:57. > :30:02.area day than yesterday and a threat of rain and a feeling of tension in
:30:03. > :30:09.the showjumping, because the horses have been really extended over the
:30:10. > :30:14.cross country. You suspect clear round will be few and far between.
:30:15. > :30:17.Here is our commentary team. Into the top ten and the familiar face of
:30:18. > :30:35.Tina Cook on Star Witness. This horse produced a superb
:30:36. > :30:41.cross-country round, she has had to do it the hard way that he has had
:30:42. > :30:45.two top ten finishes at Burghley before. Going at number one is never
:30:46. > :30:52.easy, but what a pathfinder Tina and this lovely horse, Star Witness,
:30:53. > :30:57.where yesterday on the cross-country. As we talked about,
:30:58. > :31:04.she has got a lot of racing connections at the family, but her
:31:05. > :31:10.mother was also a top international showjumper, socially is bred for
:31:11. > :31:12.this game in her own right. And all four of the owners of Star Witness
:31:13. > :31:25.used to own racehorses. That is a really good point. The
:31:26. > :31:30.support from the owners is what we all rely on, and it is great that
:31:31. > :31:34.they have spread it from racing into eventing. Having a little look
:31:35. > :31:42.there, Tina put the leg on and he responded well, really jumped out
:31:43. > :31:58.over that oxer. A quick turn, giving him time to see the fence. Nice job.
:31:59. > :32:02.He is quite a look horse, he quietly looks at the fences, and she just
:32:03. > :32:07.has to keep her leg on and say, come on, keep going forward. Brilliant.
:32:08. > :32:13.That is a wonderful way to finish off the competition the Tina Cook of
:32:14. > :32:21.Star Witness, she had wretched luck on car vino yesterday -- Calvino
:32:22. > :32:25.yesterday, but this has laid down the gauntlet for some of those to
:32:26. > :32:30.come, that is a lovely way to begin the top ten. It is absolutely
:32:31. > :32:36.brilliant, and the pressure she is putting on the next handful of
:32:37. > :32:45.riders is phenomenal. Look at that smile. And look at her mum and other
:32:46. > :32:50.supporters! Christopher Bartle, the new coach for the British team,
:32:51. > :32:54.already stamping his authority on the British team.
:32:55. > :32:58.In ninth place after the cross-country, Boyd Martin for the
:32:59. > :33:06.United States on Steady Eddie. Australian-born Boyd now riding for
:33:07. > :33:10.America, very popular figure, and Steady Eddie thoroughbred who raced
:33:11. > :33:14.in Australia no fewer than 36 times before changing his discipline to
:33:15. > :33:19.eventing, and he has been very successful, too.
:33:20. > :33:28.Well, Boyd did a great job yesterday in the cross-country run, rode some
:33:29. > :33:34.really good lines. A tiny bit over the time, but he had to be happy
:33:35. > :33:40.with that. But as they say, show is another day. Certainly got some
:33:41. > :33:47.height over that oxer fence, too, good to see.
:33:48. > :33:57.And the good thing is, Star Witness, Steady Eddie... Oh, a rattle, and
:33:58. > :34:01.another, very quick to that double. The first two horses we have seen,
:34:02. > :34:10.both thoroughbreds, he just got a little flat going down the hill into
:34:11. > :34:15.that double, and just didn't get back onto his hocks. That put him
:34:16. > :34:19.behind Tina Cook. That is the trouble with thoroughbreds, they can
:34:20. > :34:28.get a bit fast and flat in their cantor stride, got to keep them
:34:29. > :34:45.back. A huge Amat scope, but you have got to leave these fences up.
:34:46. > :34:52.He did such a big jump going into that combination, he had to push him
:34:53. > :35:06.out, always dangerous. One to go. Two down, finishes on 58, so Tina
:35:07. > :35:12.Cook is in the lead, with eight competitors to come.
:35:13. > :35:24.So here is Lynn Symansky, also from the United States, an Donner, known
:35:25. > :35:25.affectionately as the deer. Another thoroughbred, comes here with a
:35:26. > :35:39.score of 49.1. And this pair did probably their
:35:40. > :35:45.best ever performance at 4-star cross-country ever yesterday. A few
:35:46. > :35:52.time faults, but really positive, attacking bit of riding from Lynn.
:35:53. > :35:58.She is quietly coming to the first fence, I kind of hope she gets a bit
:35:59. > :36:05.quicker than that or she is going to get some time faults, but she hasn't
:36:06. > :36:12.started yet. It was a good, slick cross-country round yesterday. Those
:36:13. > :36:17.first two fences just a bit smaller than the others on the course. Yes,
:36:18. > :36:21.but what I like, she is not rushing him, but what I liked was he gave
:36:22. > :36:29.them plenty of height. Made good shapes over them. And look at the
:36:30. > :36:35.height over that oxer coming out of that double. The vertical, maybe not
:36:36. > :36:43.quite so good, and that was sadly just not a very good stride. I think
:36:44. > :36:49.Lynn was almost sitting too quiet, and he added astride that wasn't
:36:50. > :36:53.there. It is a good skill in that he has just rattled his legs and he
:36:54. > :36:58.won't want to touch another poll, and he is going way up in the air,
:36:59. > :37:02.but I was a bit concerned the way she started, almost two quietly, and
:37:03. > :37:06.then that paid the penalty, because the horse wasn't quite switched on,
:37:07. > :37:12.wasn't quite in front of the leg, and buying in front of the leg, I
:37:13. > :37:18.mean he wasn't really taking the rider's aids properly.
:37:19. > :37:24.He looks a little bit more awake now. And actually watching him jump,
:37:25. > :37:30.he shouldn't have had that gate down. That was just a mistake.
:37:31. > :37:43.Time is going to be tight, as well. APPLAUSE
:37:44. > :37:47.So, a final score for Lynn Symansky and Donner of 53.1.
:37:48. > :37:53.So by a ten double point she ages into the lead here, Lynn Symansky,
:37:54. > :38:01.with seven combinations to come. You could just see her coming to this
:38:02. > :38:06.gate, and absolutely buried on no stride. I think you put that down to
:38:07. > :38:11.experience, that was a total disagreement between horse and
:38:12. > :38:15.rider. She is still smiling, though. I don't want to put the mockers on
:38:16. > :38:18.him, but this horse, Toledo De Kerser, is considered one of the
:38:19. > :38:24.best showjumpers in this field. Currently lying in seventh place on
:38:25. > :38:27.a score of 49.1, ridden by the hugely promising Tom McEwen, and the
:38:28. > :38:42.horse has only ever had one Paul Downton in all international
:38:43. > :38:44.competitions. -- only ever one pole down in all international
:38:45. > :38:52.competitions. I will blame you write down the line if he has a pole down!
:38:53. > :39:01.That you are quite right, great young horse and rider.
:39:02. > :39:08.If he jumps like that, you are going to be absolutely right, Nick. Tom
:39:09. > :39:15.obviously has a lot of faith, confidence and trust in the horse's
:39:16. > :39:18.ability showjumping. Because he is just sitting so beautifully quietly.
:39:19. > :39:22.The horse is just getting on with his job. He is not rushing him,
:39:23. > :39:25.giving him time to play with his scope and get up the air. Tom based
:39:26. > :39:51.at Gatcombe with Zara Phillips. It is what we all want, a showjumper
:39:52. > :39:56.that can gallop and do dressage. Even a silly old man like me would
:39:57. > :40:06.quite enjoy jumping this one! Don't ask me. One day, one day.
:40:07. > :40:12.That is an quite a sharp decline, that combination, as well, which you
:40:13. > :40:21.can't see on the picture. It is surprisingly how Darren Hill it is.
:40:22. > :40:29.One to go. There you are. Poetry. Phenomenal round. To have the final
:40:30. > :40:34.day of a three-day event on a horse like that, it is what dreams are
:40:35. > :40:44.made of. He can relax as he has applied a little pressure to those
:40:45. > :40:52.in behind. They finish on 49.1, just exquisite.
:40:53. > :40:56.Here is a man who experienced mixed fortunes yesterday, the huge hero
:40:57. > :41:04.here at Burghley. Andrew Nicholson on Nereo. Andrew had a fall on
:41:05. > :41:11.Qwanza earlier in the cross-country, but he is too tough to give up, he
:41:12. > :41:17.went back in with Nereo and had a couple of time faults but went
:41:18. > :41:22.clear, so he lies in second. We are all still raving about the round
:41:23. > :41:28.they did at Badminton. I have a feeling he might be feeling a
:41:29. > :41:33.little... That was a rattle, but it stayed up. He might be feeling a
:41:34. > :41:37.little tender after his fall on Qwanza, but he certainly wouldn't
:41:38. > :41:40.let that stop him. He thought the horse wasn't quite as zestful as he
:41:41. > :41:46.can be in the cross-country yesterday. Andrew said himself, in
:41:47. > :41:54.his interview, that the horse was getting a little bit older, didn't
:41:55. > :41:58.have the gallop that he did. But I think Andrew did a brilliant job,
:41:59. > :42:03.because he didn't over Rush the horse, he kept a good gear up, and
:42:04. > :42:12.it is when this horse -- not a good one, yikes! I kind of think Andrew
:42:13. > :42:24.just added another one, almost too many. So he goes behind Tom McEwen.
:42:25. > :42:42.A couple down so far, but Andrew has to be happy with that, because the
:42:43. > :42:49.horse really, really tried his socks off. Finishes on 57.1, moving behind
:42:50. > :42:55.Tom McEwen, Tina Cook and Lynn Symansky.
:42:56. > :42:59.Now, you heard from her earlier, here she is, Piggy French on Vanir
:43:00. > :43:06.Kamira, who gave everything yesterday. And this combination 50%
:43:07. > :43:15.clear rounds this season, and this the highest placed me in the field,
:43:16. > :43:20.Vanir Kamira, it has been a great, comeback season for her so far. It
:43:21. > :43:24.certainly has, a fantastic news for the British team that she has
:43:25. > :43:32.another top horse, in fact two top horses in the string already. But it
:43:33. > :43:37.is the biggest challenge the horses face so far, and with a 50% average
:43:38. > :43:40.going clear, it's a big ask to expect it to go clear, but it is
:43:41. > :43:49.certainly a very, very talented mare. Brought forward a score of
:43:50. > :43:57.46.9 to the showjumping, leaving her in fifth place. And she just looks,
:43:58. > :44:00.jumping well but just looks a little green in between the fences,
:44:01. > :44:05.distracted a little by the atmosphere and the crowds. It's a
:44:06. > :44:10.huge ask for young horses when they are not used to this. Sometimes it
:44:11. > :44:17.works to your benefit, and sometimes you really suffer. But what I'm
:44:18. > :44:20.liking is although she was a little bit wobbly on the turns, she is
:44:21. > :44:27.actually putting lots of effort into her jumps.
:44:28. > :44:40.And piggy did say in her interview, a few rattles, that the horse is
:44:41. > :44:43.never given her a huge feel, but she just thrives, the bigger the fences,
:44:44. > :44:45.so perhaps the same as the cross-country, the showjumping, the
:44:46. > :45:11.height is going to help. APPLAUSE
:45:12. > :45:17.Brilliant. Good Piggy French, clear round, 46.9, puts her into the lead.
:45:18. > :45:21.And she will be fifth at worst, with four competitors to come. Superb
:45:22. > :45:29.performance on this mare, who will be the highest placed mare at
:45:30. > :45:35.Burghley this year. And the mare really tries down the hill, and
:45:36. > :45:38.Piggy just keeps her position, keeps her balance, stay straight. And a
:45:39. > :45:54.good punch of the air. So into the top four now. On 46.5,
:45:55. > :45:59.Tim Price and Ringwood Sky Boy have nothing in hand over Piggy French.
:46:00. > :46:05.So he can't afford to have one down. He had three down last year at
:46:06. > :46:12.Burghley and two down at Lexington. I think he would concede that
:46:13. > :46:20.showjumping is not his strongest suite. If you're true to form, he
:46:21. > :46:25.helped Tom McEwen jump a clear round, you're not too confident
:46:26. > :46:32.here. Stop it, I hope he is defying history. So will he be!
:46:33. > :46:41.A very good eye in the showjumping. It is interesting when they come
:46:42. > :46:45.into the ring, you watch them jump the first two fences, it gives you a
:46:46. > :46:51.fair indication of what they're capable of.
:46:52. > :47:02.This horse has jumped very well over the first third of the course. As
:47:03. > :47:03.they get tired and a little more strung out after the cross country,
:47:04. > :47:15.it all counts. I like that Timis incredibly soft
:47:16. > :47:21.with his hands in front of every fence. Helps it and just, he picked
:47:22. > :47:23.it up a bit there. He got a bit panicked. A lovely soft rein
:47:24. > :47:32.contact. If you can keep... Goes behind Piggy
:47:33. > :48:08.French. So 50.5 Tim Price finished on. He
:48:09. > :48:16.will be pleased with that given Ringwood Sky Boy's record in the
:48:17. > :48:22.show jumping. Tom McEwen is with Claire. Guaranteed a British winner
:48:23. > :48:28.and it could be you, Piggy French. What a good clear round? She was
:48:29. > :48:32.fabulous, I don't think I will be winning, but you know I came here
:48:33. > :48:39.hoping for a top ten, because I haven't managed it. Often eat the
:48:40. > :48:45.Burghley dirt when I try it here. So a top tennis fantastic. So to finish
:48:46. > :48:53.at worst fourth is great. Where were you last time and what were you
:48:54. > :48:57.thinking? I had my little boy Max and had a full season off. It is
:48:58. > :49:05.great to get back and to get back to this level. I'm so grateful for the
:49:06. > :49:16.support. Well done. The last British woman to win Burghley was Pippa
:49:17. > :49:22.Funnel in 2003. But they're all snapping at the heels of Oliver
:49:23. > :49:27.Townend. Izzy Taylor on Trevidden. They have had a wonderful season,
:49:28. > :49:30.winning events at the three star level. But here at four star level
:49:31. > :49:33.yesterday they were brilliant at cross country. Oh. Not a great
:49:34. > :49:46.start. Piggy French is now guaranteed
:49:47. > :49:52.third. This lovely horse of Izzy's Trevidden. The vet's inspection this
:49:53. > :50:00.morning... He was just held... The vet had another look at him and then
:50:01. > :50:06.they decided he was OK to jump. But watching him cross country he has a
:50:07. > :50:11.high head carriage and a bit rangy. We talked about his big stride.
:50:12. > :50:18.Occasionally he flicks his front legs at the jumps.
:50:19. > :50:27.Just again not... Not convincing. He doesn't look that confident at
:50:28. > :50:34.times. Prior to this, this horse had only had one rail down in seven
:50:35. > :50:39.showjumping events. Maybe yesterday is making him more legged.
:50:40. > :50:44.Yes that can be it. Especially the first time they have jumped this
:50:45. > :50:55.sort of track. This is a learning curve. An
:50:56. > :51:00.expensive round, but what a star for the future. A brilliant cross
:51:01. > :51:13.country round yesterday. Caught people's eye. 57.6 and Izzy Taylor
:51:14. > :51:20.moves down a few places. To 9th. Gemma Tattersall in second with a
:51:21. > :51:27.score of 43. Arctic Soul is her ride. This ex-race horse that
:51:28. > :51:31.developed a real following. Gemma said she was feeling unwell and had
:51:32. > :51:36.been suffering with a chest infection. Said Arctic Soul had
:51:37. > :51:41.helped her yesterday. In fairness to her she has got the best out of this
:51:42. > :51:50.horse since she has had him. Yes, it is a great partnership now.
:51:51. > :51:55.Provided he doesn't get too revved up, he can be very consistent in
:51:56. > :52:09.this phase 2. A big jump coming out of the double.
:52:10. > :52:21.Gemma was unseated and pitched up his neck.
:52:22. > :52:31.Ooh, a good rattle there. Got close to that oxer. Rattled it in front.
:52:32. > :52:36.Getting a little keen there. He was a little over the top of his legs
:52:37. > :52:51.there. Gemma is saying, listen to me boy,
:52:52. > :52:57.wait for me. Is he deep again? Living dangerously.
:52:58. > :53:04.How the first element of that combination staid up, I don't know.
:53:05. > :53:10.Oh! I was about to say she trusts him. Well, he just had a moment of
:53:11. > :53:18.distraction. What a shame for Gemma Tattersall. That moves her behind
:53:19. > :53:24.Piggy French. She will be third at worst, Gemma. Terrific Burghley and
:53:25. > :53:32.she is still thrilled. She has had a real purple patch. Watch how high
:53:33. > :53:39.the horse gets. Gemma's leg, lower leg shot back and she was way up in
:53:40. > :53:48.the air. He just had a look down at that. Didn't quite go high enough.
:53:49. > :53:54.Here he is then, Oliver Townend. He has one fence in hand. He can afford
:53:55. > :54:00.to have one fence down. But not two. If he has more than one fence down,
:54:01. > :54:05.victory will go not to him but ironically to his former partner of
:54:06. > :54:11.seven years, Piggy French. They're still great friends. Oliver, who won
:54:12. > :54:15.Burghley in 2009. This his golden chance to shine on the biggest
:54:16. > :54:21.stage, which you sense that he and everybody else feels he belongs on.
:54:22. > :54:29.Oliver and this lovely young horse did a brilliant job yesterday and he
:54:30. > :54:34.is jumping over the first couple offences. I had a chat with him, his
:54:35. > :54:36.view was whatever happens today, it is probably the best horse he has
:54:37. > :54:48.ever had. Over! He guessed at that one. He has
:54:49. > :54:54.actually got a jump in hand. But he can't have another mistake.
:54:55. > :55:10.This is keeping us right on the edge of our seats right to the very last!
:55:11. > :55:17.Will that help him concentrate? It was a big mistake.
:55:18. > :55:20.Oliver is particularly brilliant in this phase. That won't have rattled
:55:21. > :55:25.him. The tension is hanging in his humid
:55:26. > :55:52.air here at Burghley. He's done it! He has done it. Oliver
:55:53. > :55:59.Townend back at Burghley in the big time. One down early in his round,
:56:00. > :56:07.but nerves of steel. This super cool rider and you can see what it means
:56:08. > :56:12.to him. He has won on Ballaghmor Class, all class, a hugely exciting
:56:13. > :56:20.young horse, a horse he dubbed the most talented he has ever ridden.
:56:21. > :56:26.And that is why. Oliver Townend's victory, the first for a British
:56:27. > :56:32.rider since 2011 at Burghley and a one, two, three, four for Britain.
:56:33. > :56:40.He has the winner's sash. We could see how much this means to you. It
:56:41. > :56:44.is a good feel being, it has felt a long time since my last one. I'm
:56:45. > :56:49.still relatively young. Good to get another one out of the way. What
:56:50. > :56:53.were you thinking going into the arena and when you had the gate
:56:54. > :56:56.down? Not much. He's good jumper, he is young and the first time he has
:56:57. > :57:01.been on this level and gone that distance. I couldn't be happier. I
:57:02. > :57:04.looked in the collecting ring and thought I wouldn't swap my horse for
:57:05. > :57:13.anyone here. So that is a good feeling. For you being on top of a
:57:14. > :57:17.class field? It is good for the future, I have two ten-year-olds
:57:18. > :57:21.that are top class and an eleven-year-old that are top class.
:57:22. > :57:25.We have had a rough time. Everyone thinks, I have never seen it as a
:57:26. > :57:29.rough time. But it is about building for the future and it takes a long
:57:30. > :57:33.time to produce them to this level and we have go through a lot of
:57:34. > :57:40.numbers to get the class ones. But hopefully I'm going to start and cut
:57:41. > :57:44.down. I have said it for years and to concentrate on the top level
:57:45. > :57:51.ones. Hopefully people will send more after that. Well done, Oliver
:57:52. > :57:55.Townend has won this year. Thank you for watching. Victory has gone to
:57:56. > :57:59.Britain and in fact a British one, two, three. Goodbye.
