:01:03. > :01:06.horsemanship and this box celebrates the success at the
:01:06. > :01:12.Olympics and Paralympics. Never before has Britain won so many
:01:12. > :01:18.medals. A team gold in the show jumping, two gold medals in
:01:18. > :01:28.dressage. A team silver in eventing. Plenty to look back on and reflect
:01:28. > :01:52.
:01:52. > :02:02.That is a great start. That is good Zara Phillips absolutely screaming
:02:02. > :02:09.
:02:09. > :02:19.out of the arena. Wow! Move on, Tina. Silver the Great Britain! It
:02:19. > :02:24.
:02:24. > :02:33.is given us so much and it is Nick Skelton at his very best. It
:02:33. > :02:39.is a wait and see game now. This could be the first gold since 1952.
:02:39. > :02:46.Britain has got a gold! Will they see Britain win their first ever
:02:46. > :02:56.dressage medals? This is gold. She has made history. She has made
:02:56. > :03:05.history. Could it be British magic as we come to the final Olympic
:03:05. > :03:15.sport. That is one of the best things I have seen from the British
:03:15. > :03:23.
:03:23. > :03:30.rider. Charlotte Dujardin. Going Medals in all three disciplines at
:03:30. > :03:35.the Olympics and the Paralympics, 11 medals in all. Natasha Baker one

:03:56. > :04:05.just amazing. To do it in front of the home crowd, the whole country
:04:05. > :04:08.got behind us. You just want to do it again! You might have a chance
:04:08. > :04:16.in Rio but not in front of the home crowd again. What will you remember
:04:16. > :04:20.most? When we went into the arena, the first day, the crowd absolutely
:04:20. > :04:24.went mad as we went in, let alone coming out. That was my stand-out
:04:24. > :04:28.moment, the feeling of support behind us and we haven't done
:04:28. > :04:32.anything, wickets have fallen off but they were so proud to be
:04:32. > :04:38.British and be there. There was mike stand out moment. The standard
:04:38. > :04:42.of competition, Natasha, it is really tough. It really is. We have
:04:42. > :04:47.such strong competition from all of the grades from all over the world.
:04:47. > :04:52.And we have some really amazing horses at the moment, we are really
:04:53. > :04:56.lucky and we can't get complacent. We have to a bid again for Rio.
:04:56. > :05:03.there were you want to be? Definitely! How many Paralympics is
:05:03. > :05:12.that? This is my fourth. And how to this compare in terms of standards
:05:12. > :05:16.and facilities? It has to be the best, there's no doubt about it.
:05:16. > :05:21.Everything from the other games, the Paralympic village was better,
:05:22. > :05:26.more compact and easy to get about, the venues were superb. Every
:05:27. > :05:31.nation in Greenwich said it was the best temporary stabling and they
:05:31. > :05:37.knew they had been in. Everything was superb. Was that the first time
:05:37. > :05:42.he felt this is a parallel event? think it was. The home crowd made
:05:42. > :05:49.it that way. Especially when the press were saying you have seen the
:05:49. > :05:56.best, now be prepared to be amazed with the Paralympics. They got it
:05:56. > :06:02.right. The strap line thanks for the warm-up was clever. Very very
:06:02. > :06:06.clever. Channel 4 did a fantastic job, they put the Paralympics in
:06:07. > :06:11.such a positive way. We were the soup humans and it really put us on
:06:11. > :06:17.an even keel the Olympics. Everyone still had a Olympic fever from a
:06:17. > :06:25.few weeks ago. Everybody's excitement carried on. What is
:06:25. > :06:28.next? We have the Europeans in Denmark, we are getting up to that,
:06:28. > :06:34.taking younger horses out and getting them experienced for Rio
:06:34. > :06:39.and working up to that. It's exciting, new challenges. It is sad
:06:39. > :06:44.2012 is over. We are looking ahead to the future. You are inspiring so
:06:45. > :06:48.many more people. You are very very young. You are making girls and
:06:48. > :06:55.boys younger than you think that's what they want to do, the danger is
:06:55. > :07:05.they are so good you have to keep improving. That's why you're so
:07:05. > :07:15.improve -- impressive because you have improved. Yes, it was amazing.
:07:15. > :07:16.
:07:16. > :07:20.The peak of my game, I want to keep it that way for Rio. I like a
:07:20. > :07:26.challenge! You rise to the challenge. Well done to all of you.
:07:26. > :07:31.Thank you for talking to me. That's in the past, this is in the
:07:31. > :07:41.future. Ben Maher is favourite to win the World Cup. He took last
:07:41. > :07:46.year, he is on board Triple X. He has a strong international
:07:46. > :07:50.competitor. We also have individual silver and bronze in a field of 35.
:07:50. > :07:55.We look back at the puissance, the high jumper horses from earlier
:07:55. > :07:59.this week. Ben Maher won last year. We also will be showing you
:07:59. > :08:05.dressage, Charlotte Dujardin Anna taking individual and team gold at
:08:05. > :08:10.the Olympics, she was in action in the freestyle to music. It is the
:08:10. > :08:15.new rave sport in terms of popularity. And let's baby in the
:08:15. > :08:18.golden glow of Greenwich. For the first time in 60 years, the show
:08:18. > :08:28.jumpers won a gold medal and the team gold medallists will be in the
:08:28. > :08:36.
:08:36. > :08:39.This is it, backstage at Olympia. We will be showing you the
:08:39. > :08:44.highlights of the other parts that make the show so popular and so
:08:44. > :08:50.special. We start with puissance, it is high jump for horses. The
:08:50. > :08:55.word means power or might all force. It comes from Old English and old
:08:55. > :09:02.French. You want to know what makes a puissance horse, what makes a
:09:02. > :09:10.horse perfect for this discipline? Tim Stockdale explains. The
:09:10. > :09:15.puissance, we call it a test and it is the ultimate test. The key word
:09:15. > :09:19.is courage. They have to be so brave, the wall is intimidating, so
:09:19. > :09:27.big, they must take it on and be powerful and not be worried about
:09:27. > :09:31.it. I do not think there was anything wrong with the approach.
:09:31. > :09:38.The horse panicked. He thought he couldn't do it and gave up.
:09:38. > :09:41.The other think his trust in the rider. They cannot see the landing
:09:41. > :09:47.side so they hope the rider knows it OK so when they take off their
:09:47. > :09:50.land OK. The one thing big difference -- differentiates it is
:09:50. > :09:55.carefulness. The Grand Prix horse is more careful, the puissance
:09:55. > :10:02.horse is braver, willing to take the big fence on. It's a very big
:10:02. > :10:08.fence. 5 ft 10 is the height in the first round. When the horse jumps,
:10:08. > :10:13.he makes a pact with his front legs, a backward squat to push himself
:10:13. > :10:19.upwards, when he gets near the top, he brings the shoulder backwards
:10:20. > :10:24.and rolls over the top of the fence. Perfect approach and he's there.
:10:24. > :10:28.That was the business. And then he lands quite steeply,
:10:28. > :10:35.crates balance, gets organised and canters away. That's how you jump
:10:35. > :10:39.the big fence. Puissance horses come in all shapes and sizes. The
:10:39. > :10:46.rider must be cool. They must not frighten the horses or making
:10:46. > :10:52.nervous. You must position of the horse correctly for take-off,
:10:52. > :10:57.London, short and, get the right. For take-off, six feet away. There
:10:57. > :11:03.we have it, the puissance competition, simple really. You
:11:03. > :11:08.jump it, or you don't. Tim Stockdale back after a broken
:11:08. > :11:13.neck last year. This was Robert Whitaker in the first round. The
:11:13. > :11:18.horses jump two fences before they get to the wall. Robert Whitaker's
:11:18. > :11:22.horse didn't fancy it! The refusal meant he was eliminated and the
:11:22. > :11:32.field of nine was reduced by one as we pick up with commentary from
:11:32. > :11:59.
:11:59. > :12:06.ft 4. One thing's for sure, I have never ever jumped anything like
:12:06. > :12:16.that. A not even on the hunting field.
:12:16. > :12:24.
:12:24. > :12:31.house all day, world-class driving, water sensation, we have had one
:12:31. > :12:39.world-class competition all ready. The second round of the puissance.
:12:39. > :12:47.She has taken it on. That's the way she does it. Just a little path of
:12:47. > :12:51.the cheeks and eight sigh of relief. I have seen this mare looked more
:12:51. > :12:56.generous. She is running down to it as if she is running into the
:12:56. > :13:00.bottom and almost hesitated but she sat on her hocks and had the
:13:00. > :13:04.decency to push up in the air when she needed to. It makes it harder
:13:04. > :13:11.for her to jump it when she runs in quite so close. She really had to
:13:11. > :13:19.slow herself on the last stride. She is tremendously powerful. This
:13:19. > :13:23.man from Kent, died Williams, a real competitor. As is this lady.
:13:23. > :13:28.Superb against the clock and she said earlier this is not her
:13:28. > :13:38.favourite competition but she will certainly give it her all -- guy
:13:38. > :13:41.
:13:41. > :13:47.starts to jump and believe she can go all the way. That was a
:13:47. > :13:52.fantastic jump. The most convincing we have seen. The way this horse
:13:52. > :13:56.jumped. A slightly different technique, a longer stride, not
:13:56. > :14:03.quite getting to the bottom of it. Using the horses range, a big
:14:03. > :14:13.cancer, prefer to be off the fence but making it look comfortable. --
:14:13. > :14:20.
:14:20. > :14:30.she still could win the competition, her husband normally tells her what
:14:30. > :14:34.
:14:34. > :14:40.to do. Oughtershaw feeling? -- What could win? Yes, if you don't try,
:14:40. > :14:46.you don't know. We will see how those discussions go, John.
:14:46. > :14:56.COMMENTATOR: This man has had a very good autumn season on the
:14:56. > :14:59.
:15:00. > :15:05.indoor shows. I wonder whether you can remember the Rock. Just old
:15:05. > :15:11.enough. I know what you're going to tell me, short trousers, I know.
:15:11. > :15:19.That was against the late Alan Oliver and others. Now, can Italy
:15:19. > :15:27.jump into the spotlight. This horse is very strange with its front end
:15:27. > :15:33.action. Oh dear! That was a scary one again. A different jump, but
:15:33. > :15:40.Luca is loving every minute of it. Look at the smile on his face, he
:15:40. > :15:49.is enjoying himself. But he instils so much confidence into his horses,
:15:49. > :15:59.the way he rides them. He stand off too far. A big, wild scary jump sh
:15:59. > :16:00.
:16:00. > :16:06.but getting in the air. This used to be a competition that was part
:16:06. > :16:12.of European mainland scene and not Britain's. Now the roles are
:16:12. > :16:22.reversed. The British are very competitive in puissance now.
:16:22. > :16:37.
:16:37. > :16:40.little touch in front. I think John got him close to make the horse use
:16:40. > :16:44.his shoulders, he says the competition is about schooling his
:16:44. > :16:51.horse, to get it in the air, in preparation for the World Cup. You
:16:51. > :16:58.just see, just caught it slightly in front. But made hymn use his
:16:58. > :17:04.body and I think John will be pleased with that. I doubt John
:17:04. > :17:14.will come back for the next round. Kpwrou never know if he smif -- but
:17:14. > :17:17.
:17:17. > :17:25.you never know if he smif -- sniffs some prize money! Tim Stockdale.
:17:25. > :17:30.The memory i of Tim this year is jumping at royal Windsor horse show
:17:30. > :17:34.in May and he had a nasty fall as she was finishing. That was his
:17:34. > :17:38.first fall after breaking his neck. He got up and realised everything
:17:38. > :17:48.was work. That was the moment he thought I'm going to have another
:17:48. > :18:13.
:18:13. > :18:18.back end away. Got the approach he wanted. He should have jumped it.
:18:18. > :18:25.That is really disappointing for Tim. Got the shoulders and the
:18:25. > :18:30.front legs nicely away. And just did it a bit stiff in his back. A
:18:30. > :18:36.lovely calm approach. Took off in exactly the right place. Jumped a
:18:36. > :18:46.bit to the left. Just look at the head-on. Snaked a bit to the left.
:18:46. > :18:48.
:18:48. > :18:52.That was bad luck. It is a shame to have lost Tim so soon, but you're
:18:53. > :18:57.riding again, this time last year you had your neck in a brace.
:18:57. > :19:02.would have to have the wide angles on. It is nice to be back. But
:19:02. > :19:06.you're right I'm disappoint. I he did his hard work, jumped well in
:19:06. > :19:11.front and kept his back straight and tipped it off the wrong way. We
:19:11. > :19:17.want him to tip over and release the back end. We did the hard work
:19:17. > :19:22.and a silly fault. Will we see you later? Yes the horse did brilliant
:19:22. > :19:28.this afternoon and it is teaming up nicely for World Cup and that horse
:19:28. > :19:37.is a nice six-bar horse. There will be plenty of people cheering you
:19:37. > :19:43.here, nice to see you again. So Tim Stockdale is gone. Four through at
:19:43. > :19:49.the moment. We now learn that John Whitaker is not going to go into
:19:49. > :19:59.round three. I think we put a lot of money on that! We have got three
:19:59. > :20:03.
:20:03. > :20:13.at the moment going through. Now Michael Whitaker. This is Ingliston
:20:13. > :20:24.
:20:24. > :20:31.more from Michael. Yes and the family will be watching this.
:20:32. > :20:37.Matt's dad died earlier in the year and John Llany, the Llany family
:20:37. > :20:41.have done so much for British show jumping. That is the approach, a
:20:41. > :20:46.exactly into the right place and he kept the horse's body straight in
:20:46. > :20:52.the air. He is not too bad a rider, Michael, isn't he? He is getting
:20:52. > :21:00.the hang of it! That was brilliant. Peach of a stride, perfect rhythm.
:21:00. > :21:09.That is the way to do it. So four through to round three. That will
:21:09. > :21:19.be the next round and we have still got two to come. Ben Maher and Will
:21:19. > :21:22.
:21:22. > :21:29.funnel. Just going back to the Llany family, they are sorpblted --
:21:29. > :21:34.associated with the other great family in British show jumping. A
:21:34. > :21:44.win for Michael Whitaker would be a lovely touch for British
:21:44. > :22:08.
:22:08. > :22:12.wall there. In the first round he approach and surprised the horse.
:22:12. > :22:18.Wow! What a piece of riding! He went right up to the top corner and
:22:18. > :22:22.cut in, so the horse couldn't think about dodging. That is an amazing
:22:22. > :22:27.piece of rider. He is a real thinker. He has worked out the
:22:27. > :22:37.right plan. And had no chance to look at the wall and get a wobble
:22:37. > :22:44.on. That was incredible. He won in 2010 and Michael Whitaker was third
:22:44. > :22:52.with CyberSpace. Will the battle be between them stkph The jump he
:22:53. > :23:02.produced by coming in on theage was perfect. What a tactic. Now Willie
:23:03. > :23:35.
:23:36. > :23:41.with just three days' riding he adopted what you could daul the
:23:41. > :23:49.safety seat. He nearly put the brakes on. I think probably Will
:23:49. > :23:53.will be happy to call ate day. think he is ready to go and have a
:23:53. > :23:57.beer tonight. That was a hair- raising moment. But no harm done.
:23:57. > :24:02.He kept his balance beautifully. His stride there, the horse decided
:24:02. > :24:08.he didn't want to go and Will said, come on, and he ended up as a
:24:08. > :24:13.result way too far off. He had no chance of jumping it. The horse was
:24:13. > :24:17.honest to go. He was honest to jump. He was a long way off. Will
:24:17. > :24:21.realised that, you watch him sit back. Took one hand off the reins
:24:21. > :24:30.to keep his balance. Let's have another look at this. Half a length
:24:31. > :24:35.off in the end. The wall did stand at 6 foot 4. It is now being raised.
:24:35. > :24:44.Bob is the course designer. He makes the call. How high are we
:24:44. > :24:50.going? 6 foot 8. Do you have a figure of how many horses are
:24:50. > :24:55.capable of jumping this height? you make an assessment and there is
:24:55. > :25:03.one twor could go quite a long way. I think we will get over 7 foot.
:25:03. > :25:11.Maybe 7 foot 2. I hope. It is big enough. You wouldn't want to gallop
:25:11. > :25:21.into this wall, even if it is collapsible. A massive fence.
:25:21. > :25:25.
:25:25. > :25:33.here are the ones to do battle in the sec jump off. Round three. I
:25:33. > :25:38.think Laura Renwick will stick in. Luca Moneta for Italy. What is your
:25:38. > :25:43.favourite? It is wide-open. If Ben can keep his horse straight. He is
:25:43. > :25:49.the one with the biggest jump. Maybe that tactic will work. He is
:25:49. > :25:59.possibly the favourite. But don't discount Ritchie Rich. I remember
:25:59. > :26:00.
:26:00. > :26:06.when guy won his first puissance on a horse called Oona. Guy took the
:26:06. > :26:16.horse up and took it over the win.: there is no rider that can instil
:26:16. > :26:47.
:26:47. > :26:51.more confidence into a horse than took it on. That is a surprise. I
:26:52. > :26:56.think Guy's approach was better than time than the round before. He
:26:56. > :27:02.ran into the bottom and she didn't get her shoulders up. If you look
:27:02. > :27:07.where he took off. It was a good take off. Maybe a fraction cles, --
:27:08. > :27:17.close, but that is where he was last time. Didn't push up in the
:27:17. > :27:22.air enough. Just a bit too quick possibly on the way down. That last
:27:22. > :27:31.stride, tiny bit short. But you would say that's where she normally
:27:31. > :27:38.gets too. But she didn't make the jump. It is 6 foot 8. It is no
:27:38. > :27:44.small fence. And I'm surprised we are at 6 foot 8 in round three.
:27:44. > :27:54.it is a big fence. Once you get past 6 foot 6, it does make a big
:27:54. > :27:55.
:27:55. > :28:05.difference. Laura Renwick then. On Roller Coaster. There would be a
:28:05. > :28:27.
:28:27. > :28:32.lot of support from this lady in better and this horse is so brave.
:28:32. > :28:38.You can see on the way down, never ever thinking about trying to dodge
:28:38. > :28:42.out of the fence. Only one thought on Roller Coaster's mind and that
:28:43. > :28:47.is getting in the air and jumping the fence. Sthe jumped three rounds
:28:47. > :28:52.last year and then called it a day. Will she go again? A bit off the
:28:52. > :29:02.fence, but that is where the horse likes to be. Jumping slightly to
:29:02. > :29:12.
:29:12. > :29:16.the right. But again making a how long can she go on doing it as
:29:16. > :29:26.the war goes up? She needs to be fractionally closer in the next
:29:26. > :29:28.
:29:28. > :29:34.round. Smiling already. I am impressed by this man. He really
:29:34. > :29:39.enjoys his jumping. The smile on his face, you get the impression
:29:39. > :29:48.what will happen next? Some of the riders looks a serious and he has a
:29:48. > :29:54.big grin on his face, like he is having fun. She has done a couple
:29:54. > :30:00.of strange jumps so far. Let's look at this one. Very fast. Another
:30:00. > :30:05.strange, we to jump all over the place. But in the end too much
:30:05. > :30:13.speed. Could not quite stay in the air with that much pace. He is
:30:13. > :30:20.grinning even more. He is loving his time here. Fantastic. The
:30:20. > :30:26.riders love coming here. We have the world's top eight riders, eight
:30:26. > :30:31.out of the top 10. We have the best field we have ever had here. He has
:30:31. > :30:37.come down way too fast. A long way off. All sorts of things happening,
:30:37. > :30:45.twisting, turning, legs everywhere. He was not smiling over the top of
:30:45. > :30:51.the fence. I think it is relief afterwards. He is sitting backwards
:30:51. > :30:58.over the top of the fence hanging on for dear life. Look at his face.
:30:58. > :31:02.He has had fun. It's all good fun. This is interesting because
:31:02. > :31:08.although Laura Renwick does not want to jump again, she has cleared
:31:08. > :31:15.the wall. If Ben Maher clears it, it is 20,000 on offer so her
:31:15. > :31:25.husband will wants to talk her into it. Let's see what happens with Ben.
:31:25. > :31:38.
:31:38. > :31:45.Ben Maher. Now looking to stay in we are losing competitors rapidly.
:31:45. > :31:51.Will he come inside again? He is. Taking that very fast. He has
:31:51. > :31:59.jumped it! It has worked again. We are going again. We are going to
:31:59. > :32:06.round four. Again, Ben using his experience and knowledge, and it
:32:06. > :32:12.worked. So much pace, pulling really hard into the jump. Does not
:32:12. > :32:22.want too much room in front of the wall to lose control. But the power
:32:22. > :32:30.
:32:30. > :32:36.special nights in the puissance. Gets into the right place, and this
:32:36. > :32:46.horse really has got the scope and power... We are going bigger. We
:32:46. > :32:46.
:32:46. > :32:51.are. This is the situation, Laura has jumped clear, Ben Maher has
:32:51. > :32:56.jumped, it is the two of them in it. If she wants to keep the game alive,
:32:56. > :33:03.to be competitive, she has to go in again and she knows she has. With
:33:03. > :33:12.the greatest reluctance will see a Laura Renwick jump again. -- we
:33:12. > :33:18.will see. This puissance coming down to around four. They could be
:33:18. > :33:28.one more round. Interesting if they would go again. We've had occasions
:33:28. > :33:42.
:33:42. > :33:52.where the riders actually decides have had drama since Monday night,
:33:52. > :34:00.
:34:01. > :34:09.a world record in the first Grand earlier I am not really a fan of
:34:09. > :34:17.the puissance wall. Not to quit. -- not too quick. She jumped it!
:34:17. > :34:21.Fantastic. That was a brilliant piece of writing. She got the
:34:21. > :34:27.stride you're talking about. Exactly, slightly more balanced.
:34:27. > :34:35.She jumped at, a touch further to the middle of the fence and what a
:34:35. > :34:41.right. She kept her nerve brilliantly. A fraction closer,
:34:41. > :34:46.just touched in front, got away with it. She had enough balance to
:34:46. > :34:50.roll the back end over. If she was quicker it would have come down.
:34:50. > :34:56.The wall Wobble's quite a lot. But it is very light. She only rubbed
:34:56. > :35:01.the top of it. If you hit it at all it is light enough to come down.
:35:01. > :35:07.She got away with it. For someone who doesn't like puissance, you are
:35:07. > :35:13.quite good. He is a phenomenal horse, he will jump from three,
:35:13. > :35:18.puissance. He is the most versatile animal. I feel very safe on him. He
:35:18. > :35:23.will try his best for me and he proves it. You can watch Ben Maher
:35:23. > :35:33.with me. If he has the wall down, you have won the puissance!
:35:33. > :35:47.
:35:47. > :35:53.call. They do not come any cooler than Ben Maher. He is almost
:35:53. > :35:56.certainly going to take the tight inside line so he doesn't get too
:35:56. > :36:06.much pace up. He doesn't want a repeat of what happened in the
:36:06. > :36:27.
:36:27. > :36:35.first round when he had a horrible You both jumped clear, there is
:36:35. > :36:45.another round. No, that's it now. I am quite willing for him to win
:36:45. > :36:46.
:36:46. > :36:53.this one. I am proud of my horse. This jump, slightly off suits the
:36:53. > :37:00.horse's technique. He is a big horse, he needs the room. Brierley
:37:01. > :37:05.run by Ben. -- brilliantly. It looks to me as if Ben Maher is
:37:05. > :37:11.going to go again it to make it a clear out right wing. If he wants
:37:11. > :37:19.to win out right otherwise it is a tie. That would be a wonderful
:37:19. > :37:25.victory, twice in three years for Ben Maher. But this man is a real
:37:25. > :37:35.professional. He studies, he looks at things in detail. He has the
:37:35. > :38:00.
:38:00. > :38:10.wins in the past. The triple bar was often the fence that undid that
:38:10. > :38:11.
:38:12. > :38:20.combination. Inside again. Brits tactic he has used. Very nearly. So
:38:20. > :38:28.close. It would be nice to finish with a clean sheet. The crowd are
:38:28. > :38:34.going nuts. What a fantastic competition we have had. Once again
:38:34. > :38:39.the puissance has come alive. To see a medallist when the big one is
:38:39. > :38:45.again something this crowd have really enjoyed. Let's have another
:38:45. > :38:52.look at this. Maybe a fraction quick, slightly off it. Just a
:38:52. > :39:02.little flick, unlucky not to get away with it. So near, yet so far.
:39:02. > :39:07.But he takes the prize pot. It hung on for a second, the top brick in
:39:07. > :39:16.the balance and down it came. It doesn't matter. Ben Maher wins the
:39:16. > :39:25.puissance again. Some great names have won this famous puissance.
:39:25. > :39:34.Michael Whitaker won it twice in the late 1980s, Robert Smith. The
:39:34. > :39:39.Australian also won it. Won it twice in the late 1980s. Freddie
:39:39. > :39:49.Welsh, another one who won the puissance when it first came back
:39:49. > :40:26.
:40:26. > :40:31.here in the early 1970s. This is one, Robert Whitaker in 9th place.
:40:31. > :40:41.Then there is the winner again after a gap of a couple of years.
:40:41. > :40:41.
:40:41. > :40:49.It heated on the edge. I had... It was more important he went and
:40:49. > :40:55.stopped. I was a little bit far away. It is OK, I was happy. It was
:40:55. > :41:00.enough. I am proud. It was a good night to finish it. A good effort
:41:00. > :41:04.considering the state York one is in. Yes, I have not thought about
:41:04. > :41:14.it because of the adrenalin. I'll put some ice on it. Thank you very
:41:14. > :41:22.
:41:22. > :41:27.the spotlight, what a year for Ben Maher. This is a man who has the
:41:27. > :41:34.greatest respect from his colleagues as a really really top-
:41:34. > :41:38.class jockey. An all-round horseman. His brilliance in the quick-
:41:38. > :41:46.thinking to make the turn into the wall to get his horse to jump it is
:41:46. > :41:52.what won the competition tonight. Ben Maher on his horse, it's quite
:41:52. > :41:59.a mouthful. He wins the puissance again. He is flying this week. He
:41:59. > :42:06.really is going well. You will see him later life this afternoon. He
:42:06. > :42:13.will be writing Triple X. -- riding. The show has been going for 40
:42:13. > :42:17.years, it was restarted in 1973 by a former BBC commentator. His son
:42:18. > :42:21.runs the show and some of the key ingredients are the puissance,
:42:21. > :42:31.beautiful in their simplicity, it maintains an appeal to all age

:42:31. > :44:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:44:49. > :44:54.groups and here are some of the Beautiful. It is the classic
:44:54. > :45:03.mixture of entertainment and sport. Graham Fletcher competed at the
:45:03. > :45:09.first Olympia. Simon Brooks Ward also here. This was you, Graham in
:45:09. > :45:15.1973. What is it lime coming here? Fantastic. Since it started it has
:45:15. > :45:21.always had a special atmosphere. It was a brave move to come here. The
:45:21. > :45:30.show ran spring to late autumn. And it was very brave of Simon's father
:45:30. > :45:37.to you know... Put such a show on. It has always, it has alwaysed a a
:45:37. > :45:42.special atmosphere. Simon, when your father made the decision to
:45:42. > :45:48.reinvent this, there was first showjumping in 1907, people thought
:45:48. > :45:53.it would fail. They thought it was thought he was mad. I sent up the
:45:53. > :45:59.high street in a squirrel suit to give away tickets. You couldn't gir
:45:59. > :46:03.them away. And now look at it. do you keep it fresh? One act is
:46:03. > :46:08.Jean Francois Pignon who, seems to control wild horses with no bridle
:46:08. > :46:13.no, saddle. He just does it through instinct. He is an amazing man and
:46:13. > :46:18.so good to work with. You should see his horses in the stable,
:46:18. > :46:25.they're so calm and collected. And that is what we need. We like
:46:25. > :46:30.people to see this displays. You go around Europe to find new acts?
:46:30. > :46:34.it could be Russia, Spain, France Italy. We have had some from Japan.
:46:34. > :46:39.This is the Barcelona police, who finished their routine with the
:46:39. > :46:44.horses all lying down. And the children and I brought my God
:46:44. > :46:50.children and they sit there gripped by it. I'm glad to hear that. They
:46:50. > :46:54.should buy more tickets! When they start young and we have had
:46:54. > :47:01.generations coming here and granny's treat, she was probably a
:47:01. > :47:05.child at the first one. Do you enjoy rung it, or is it a massive
:47:05. > :47:11.stress? I'm unemployable anywhere else. It is a family affair. It
:47:11. > :47:17.wouldn't be the same. It has basis in ending up in training people for
:47:17. > :47:21.real life sport. The Shetland pony Grand National, both Sam Twiston-
:47:21. > :47:27.Davies and Willie Twiston Daveies learned to be jockeys in this. That
:47:27. > :47:34.pony in second, he is 20 years old, in the queen's colours. He retires
:47:34. > :47:39.this year and he is the pony that Sam 5 Willie learned on. It is fun,
:47:39. > :47:44.but it is competitive. All the kids want to win. Everyone that comes
:47:44. > :47:49.here, yes they want to have fun, but it is competitive. And you know
:47:49. > :47:53.you will see in the world cup following, everyone wants to win at
:47:53. > :47:59.this show. And big prize money on offer. Tell me how you think your
:47:59. > :48:07.wife, Tina, will get on? It was a tough call getting here, she had a
:48:07. > :48:11.bad fall. She was in the jump off. A real bad accident. We are lucky
:48:11. > :48:14.to get her here. But she was second on the first night and clear
:48:14. > :48:19.yesterday. So it is a tough call. But she is a tough girl and she
:48:19. > :48:26.should have a chance. Simon, in term of the quality of showjump, we
:48:26. > :48:34.have the Grand Prix to come, but the World Cup Qualifier is the big
:48:34. > :48:38.one. Yes with eight out of the ten -- top ten in the field, it the
:48:38. > :48:44.jump off will be special. Thank you for talking us to. We look forward
:48:44. > :48:49.to the World Cup this afternoon. But the big growth sport in terms
:48:49. > :48:52.interest has been dressage. In the last few years, European standards
:48:52. > :49:00.have got higher and Britain has been leading the way. They won a
:49:00. > :49:04.gold at the Olympics for the first time for the team and Charlotte
:49:04. > :49:11.Dujardin took the individual gold. She was in action in the free style
:49:11. > :49:17.fressage to music. We will see her and Carl Hester among those
:49:17. > :49:27.thrilling the crowds. COMMENTATOR: Carl Hester for Great Britain with
:49:27. > :49:28.
:49:28. > :49:38.Uthopia. A lit of a Hick up at the start there. -- hiccup at the start

:50:13. > :55:23.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:55:23. > :55:27.trot, you just saw it. Hopefully he great combination of Uthopia and
:55:27. > :55:33.Carl Hester weren't at their best, but tonight I get the feeling
:55:33. > :55:43.they're on top. That was unbelievable. Such harmony.
:55:43. > :55:43.
:55:43. > :56:27.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:56:27. > :56:33.Incredible. It is into the lead hand the title over to the Hester
:56:33. > :56:41.stable on a plate. She is very determined. She will make the most
:56:41. > :56:47.of this horse. It is interesting, because when Britain first hit gold,
:56:47. > :56:52.in the European Championships in 2010, Carl Hester and Isabell Werth
:56:52. > :57:02.did have a real battle. On that occasion, Carl Hester won. Will he
:57:02. > :57:04.
:57:04. > :57:08.tonight? This is another horse that has improved a lot on his
:57:08. > :57:14.performance yesterday so far. He is more relax add more together, a
:57:14. > :57:20.more a unit. Yesterday, he looked a bit disjointed and the hind leg
:57:20. > :57:30.didn't come up underneath the horse through his suple back. Today, he
:57:30. > :57:30.
:57:30. > :00:43.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:00:43. > :00:49.fantastic ride tonight. Technically, to me, it looks at standing. It
:00:49. > :00:54.just lacks that star quality somehow. Am I wrong? No, you're not
:00:54. > :01:04.wrong. It does not have the fluidity and harmony of Uthopia for
:01:04. > :01:08.
:01:08. > :01:12.me. For me, there is still a little hitch and a slight tendency to
:01:12. > :01:19.stiffen and some of the movement's. But she is a phenomenal competitor,
:01:19. > :01:25.this lady, and she is giving it everything she can. OK, OK, OK.
:01:25. > :01:34.What she did there was like a half pirouette and came back and it did
:01:34. > :01:44.not flow as it should have done. Here she is varying the angle in
:01:44. > :01:51.
:01:51. > :01:59.compare her extended trot, it is not with a hind leg. This is a lady
:01:59. > :02:04.who has been at the top of her game. A great competitor. Carl Hester has
:02:04. > :02:10.done it and now Isabell Werth has done it. Could they will be chasing
:02:10. > :02:20.Charlotte Dujardin? Now it is the Marks. Has she beaten Carl Hester?
:02:20. > :02:22.
:02:22. > :02:32.Yes, she has. Now it is the Olympic champion, Charlotte Dujardin. Is it
:02:32. > :02:53.
:02:53. > :03:00.had turned tonight? -- it is it her better. Charlotte yesterday was
:03:00. > :03:04.feeling very under the weather with bronchitis. She is better. Let's
:03:04. > :03:14.hope it is good enough. Nothing like a world record to make you
:03:14. > :03:14.
:03:14. > :05:37.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:05:37. > :05:46.feel better. That is much better He is a very on edge and happy with
:05:46. > :05:53.himself. Yes, this horse had not competed since London until last
:05:53. > :05:59.night. I think everyone was amazed how much the horse was on song for
:06:00. > :06:09.the lack of competition. To Nat, as you rightly say, Judy, he is a

:06:10. > :08:39.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:08:39. > :08:43.on edge in London. The last part of got. She is now what top of the
:08:43. > :08:48.world. It must be a wonderful feeling for you. I am so proud of
:08:48. > :08:58.her. The crowd around their feet, so they should be. Here is the
:08:58. > :09:03.
:09:03. > :09:07.score. Charlotte Dujardin wins for Our gold medal-winning team are
:09:07. > :09:15.here, still bathing in the glory. Karl, you are the team captain, how
:09:15. > :09:20.much does it mean to you now, that you did it? Be his historical for
:09:20. > :09:25.starters. That will remain, I think with dressage fans for the rest of
:09:25. > :09:28.their lives. I can remember, I do not know them, but I always
:09:28. > :09:32.remember the gold medallists from years ago so I think that is how
:09:32. > :09:35.people will remember us. It has been non-stop. The promotion has
:09:35. > :09:39.been fantastic and the fact that everyone seems to know what
:09:39. > :09:43.dressage is now is more unbelievable. It does not step --
:09:43. > :09:48.stock. You think winning the gold medallist the end but it is the
:09:48. > :09:53.beginning. And the important thing is to build on that. You and
:09:53. > :09:57.Valegro seem to be getting stronger and stronger? Yes, last night was
:09:57. > :10:01.the first time he has been out since the Olympics so it was very
:10:01. > :10:06.exciting. The atmosphere was buzzing in there. He was very
:10:06. > :10:12.excited to be in there. Were you happy with him? Yes, the beginning
:10:12. > :10:16.was a little bit of a Neth, something spooked him and he got a
:10:16. > :10:23.bit frightened, so the start was a little bit tense, but the rest that
:10:23. > :10:27.I was happy with. Only in the week, you set a new world record? Yes, in
:10:27. > :10:32.the Grand Prix I set a new world record so I had a fantastic ride.
:10:32. > :10:36.He was really good. I was absolutely over the moon with him.
:10:36. > :10:40.It is amazing how the standard of British dressage has improved.
:10:40. > :10:46.Laura, you were a part of that but now you have the challenge to find
:10:46. > :10:50.a new horse? Yes, certainly before Rio I would like to have a new
:10:50. > :10:54.project which makes it onto the team, hopefully home-bred if I am a
:10:54. > :10:59.lucky. Alf is not retired. He did not compete here, he is a bit older
:10:59. > :11:04.than the other horses, so he has had a longer break. He is pretty
:11:04. > :11:08.chirpy back home. How has a life changed for you? Have you been
:11:08. > :11:12.going round to schools talking about dressage? Are I have been
:11:12. > :11:16.doing a lot of things. I got to compete in a Olympic Superstars
:11:16. > :11:21.which will be shown on BBC after Christmas. I have been doing lots
:11:21. > :11:26.of fun things and trying to keep the momentum up and promoting
:11:26. > :11:30.equestrian sports. I think people really appreciate the beauty of
:11:30. > :11:35.dressage now, you said everything - - everyone wants to talk about it,
:11:35. > :11:39.bring on the dancing horses, they love it. Yes, dressage is about
:11:39. > :11:43.this beautiful partnership, harmony, the horse looking like it is doing
:11:43. > :11:48.on its own. It is like a perfect marriage really. That is how it
:11:48. > :11:54.should be. I think the three of us have managed to be well married to
:11:54. > :12:00.our horses this year. We have had a lot of praise for the way the
:12:00. > :12:04.horses go which is fantastic. And hopefully, a new era of likeness in
:12:04. > :12:08.dressage. It is not that complicated. The fact that we can
:12:08. > :12:12.show it, explain it in this easy way with an easy way of riding
:12:12. > :12:19.makes the sport more accessible. is accessible and successful as
:12:19. > :12:25.well, well done, all of you. Carl Hester is the Co owner and
:12:25. > :12:32.trainer of Valegro, Charlotte Dujardin's horse so he will be
:12:32. > :12:35.pleased. Charlotte takes home the prize money, adding to the success
:12:35. > :12:40.in the Grand Prix the night before. She was performing the same routine
:12:40. > :12:45.to the same patriotic music which won had the Olympic individual gold
:12:45. > :12:50.medal. Valegro is a hot horse. He takes a fair bit of handling. Andy
:12:50. > :12:55.Austin is alongside me. I am getting lots are queries on put her
:12:55. > :13:00.about how to train a horse to do that level of dressage. The cities
:13:00. > :13:04.the same as in show jumping. A starter for years old and build up.
:13:04. > :13:10.It is layer upon layer. It takes five or six years of really hard
:13:10. > :13:14.work. So, Kauto Star which has just retired from racing, he is now,
:13:14. > :13:19.they are thinking of training him for dressage. He could not be this
:13:19. > :13:23.level, could he? There is no chance of that. There is the breeding for
:13:23. > :13:29.one. He is a racehorse. Many generations of breeding gone into

:20:00. > :20:05.very often in your life. This man Now the arena is full of coloured
:20:05. > :20:11.poles. Andy you have had a walk around. It is the course for the
:20:12. > :20:19.qual Fer -- qualifier. Well this is very big. It starts off big early
:20:19. > :20:22.on. There is two huge fences, three to four are a wide trim bar, a huge
:20:22. > :20:28.oxer and the London Olympic wall at the end of the line. That is right
:20:29. > :20:33.at the beginning. Some tight turns. And big spreads. This, look how far
:20:33. > :20:37.they have to stretch across this parallel. That fence is coming out
:20:37. > :20:42.of a combination. That is how tough it is. So the beginning of the
:20:42. > :20:46.course is very much about power. Will, can I grab a word? If you
:20:46. > :20:51.look at this fence here, this plank, the entrance is right there, they
:20:51. > :20:59.have got to go past the entrance and jump this huge plank, trying to
:20:59. > :21:02.keep the concentration. It is tough. Will Funnel is here. How has your

:21:07. > :21:12.It would be nice to have a good round. It is tough, you're straight
:21:12. > :21:18.into it, big jumps. There is a lot of committed distances. It is big
:21:18. > :21:23.and tall and it will take a bit of jumping. Sorry, I disturbed you.
:21:23. > :21:28.You will see Will pacing out, so he knows how many strides between this
:21:28. > :21:33.fence and the next one. Also Andy, riders needing to understand their
:21:33. > :21:38.own horse and whether they're a naturally long striding horse, or a
:21:38. > :21:41.short, choppy one. That is what we are talking about. You heard Will
:21:41. > :21:45.mention the triple bar. You need to open your horse up. If you have a
:21:45. > :21:51.horse with a big stride, they will open themselves up and find it very
:21:51. > :21:56.hard to get balanced again for the wall. Now let's have a chat with
:21:56. > :22:01.Nick Skelton and Tina Fletcher. Tina the particular challenges for
:22:01. > :22:06.you? Its all. It starts off big. The first fence is square and wide.
:22:06. > :22:11.It is great to see you back, you have had a bad injury. Yes it is my
:22:11. > :22:19.first show back after three and a half months. Tina was a reserve for
:22:19. > :22:24.the Olympics. Nick was there. He won a gold medal. How is Big Star
:22:24. > :22:28.indoors? He is quite green indoors. He is still only nine. It is quite
:22:28. > :22:33.difficult for him this horse. Especially the fences down the side.
:22:33. > :22:39.He doesn't like the crowd so much. They're tight to the ball. -- wall.
:22:39. > :22:45.This distance is quite short. many strides? It is five, but it
:22:45. > :22:51.will be tight. You have to keep wide. But he is coming off the
:22:51. > :22:55.crowd. It will be a fight. Good luck. We will show you what Nick
:22:55. > :22:59.means, unlike outdoor courses, the crowd are right here and could
:22:59. > :23:04.almost lean over and touch a horse. We were talking about how quickly
:23:04. > :23:09.this comes off the corner by the entrance. Nick said this stride f
:23:09. > :23:18.you go directly, it is a bit short for five and you have to come out
:23:18. > :23:25.close to the crowd. The horses get spooked, Big Star is still green
:23:25. > :23:31.indoors. We saw him get spooked. Peter chars is here. He went last
:23:31. > :23:35.in the jump off and sealed the gold for Britain. He is here. Think I
:23:35. > :23:41.will go last today. It is a big, straight forward course. Plenty to
:23:41. > :23:46.jump. Not over technical, but very big jumps. You're Olympic horse you
:23:46. > :23:55.have sold to Bruce Springsteen's daughter. What are you riding?
:23:55. > :24:03.chancing my arm, punching above my weight with a ten-year-old mare
:24:03. > :24:08.called Odi. How do you ride this will give her as much help as I can.
:24:08. > :24:14.I am the teacher today and I have got get some mileage for the future.
:24:14. > :24:20.She is a nice prospect educational round? Yes. Now talk me
:24:20. > :24:26.through this, Andy, this is coming from eight to nine. Up to nine here.
:24:26. > :24:33.Hello! This is a big power jump. If you look at the front rail, it is
:24:33. > :24:39.just as high as the back rail. This fence is about one metre eighty
:24:39. > :24:45.wide. It is a very wide fence. This opens the horse up. When you have
:24:45. > :24:52.opened it up. It is difficult to get them rebalanced. That is the
:24:52. > :24:56.course builder's strick -- trick all the way round. Here we have the
:24:56. > :25:01.red wall. The red bus. Look at this fence here. Because on the top of
:25:01. > :25:06.the wall there is some very light bricks. And they, they will come
:25:07. > :25:16.down easily. If we come and have a look at them. You're going to tap
:25:16. > :25:22.them are you? This brick here. is like leg kpwo. -- Lego. Hev e
:25:22. > :25:28.they have had to jump wide fences, open the horses up and then some
:25:28. > :25:35.quick strides and that could be difficult. I have just seen the
:25:35. > :25:43.youngest member of our Olympic team, Scott Brash. How much have you done
:25:43. > :25:47.since Greenwich? I have done a couple of the World Cup shows. But
:25:47. > :25:51.he has had a month break. So this is his first show back. But he is
:25:51. > :26:01.in great form. How much of a difference does it make to you to
:26:01. > :26:06.ride here and they announce you as an Olympic gold medallist? Sniet
:26:06. > :26:10.mace makes a great -- It makes a great difference. Good luck this
:26:10. > :26:16.afternoon. I keep thinking it is tonight. Do you think you have a
:26:16. > :26:20.chance of winning? I don't want to say too much. But yeah, if I ride
:26:20. > :26:27.the lines right, my horse jump as good as he can, he felt good the
:26:27. > :26:32.other nights, well he has a chance. He will be very cool in the saddle.
:26:32. > :26:36.Good luck, Scott. Bob Ellis is in charge of designing the course. I
:26:36. > :26:44.have asked Andy about it, what do 0 have in your mind when you were
:26:44. > :26:51.planning the route and the size of the fences? It is a course from the
:26:51. > :26:56.Netherlands. It is a tough course. It is big, very uncompromising.
:26:56. > :27:00.Distances vary, you have some long and short distances. Wide oxers and
:27:01. > :27:06.I think it will take some jumping. But I think it is fair. You can get
:27:06. > :27:11.at everything. I think it is a fair course. Are you allowed to say who
:27:11. > :27:20.you think might win? As you know from the Olympics I'm unbiased.
:27:20. > :27:24.That is true. I think Mark Houtzager has a chance. Of the
:27:24. > :27:30.British riders who do you think will make the jump off. I think six
:27:30. > :27:35.clear rounds all Brits. No, I think Nick with Big Star has chance.
:27:35. > :27:41.Scott, he is going well. Ben is going amazingly well. So they're
:27:41. > :27:48.all in with a good chance. Thank you. I hope it goes well for you.
:27:48. > :27:53.Andy, we will keep wandering. are going to look at the last part
:27:53. > :27:58.of the course. That is another vertical. You imagine what the
:27:58. > :28:02.horses are seeing as they take off. There is a huge amount of
:28:02. > :28:07.distraction. This is a light and narrow fence and it comes down
:28:07. > :28:13.easily. So when they have jumped that, they swing around the corner.
:28:13. > :28:17.Come into is in big parallel? fence is very close to the end of
:28:17. > :28:22.the arena. They need a lot of power. There is no room to get any pace
:28:22. > :28:26.and they have to jump it off the hocks with power. As soon as you
:28:26. > :28:32.jump that, here is the last part of course, the combination. It is
:28:32. > :28:42.rights at the end. How tired do horse get. One would think not so
:28:42. > :28:46.tired. They get fired -- tired because of the intense effort.
:28:46. > :28:52.Because the jumping comes so quickly, they don't get a chance
:28:52. > :28:57.for a breather. If a horse is short of power, you look at this. It is a
:28:57. > :29:07.blur of colour. All you see is green and yellow. It is hard to
:29:07. > :29:10.
:29:10. > :29:15.This is the first part of a combination so it is a delicate
:29:15. > :29:19.fence jumping in. There is another vertical straight after it, once
:29:19. > :29:27.dried. Right at the end of the arena, shall we have a look at the
:29:27. > :29:33.Oxo? Yes, show me. It is lucky that the cameraman is very tall. This is
:29:33. > :29:41.the second vertical. They will do one stride in here and then two
:29:41. > :29:44.here and we were talking about Square oxers and Power jumping,
:29:44. > :29:51.right up to the end of the arena, the very last fence on the course,
:29:51. > :29:57.a huge oxer to jump there. It is a proper test. This is the last
:29:57. > :30:01.fence? It is part sea of the combination. They set a time of the
:30:01. > :30:06.first-round, it is not about going the fastest but is the time a tight
:30:06. > :30:12.enough to make that a factor? always tight. I think they have to
:30:12. > :30:16.get round in 64 seconds. If you go over that time, you get time faults.
:30:16. > :30:22.It means the riders have to keep up a strong rhythm all the way round.
:30:22. > :30:26.You definitely get time faults if you dally about. A lot of questions
:30:26. > :30:30.about what the courses where and why they have little hats on. Is
:30:30. > :30:35.that about indoor jumping? There is a lot of noise in the arena and
:30:35. > :30:39.there is a real buzz and the Tannoy and everything. He is really to
:30:40. > :30:47.keep the sound out. Sometimes they put cotton wool in the horse's
:30:47. > :30:53.beers so it deadens the sound. -- in the horse's years. The horses
:30:53. > :30:57.are sensitive. They react to the noise and the crowd. Most of the
:30:57. > :31:02.riders will walk the course two or 3 times. They will make sure they
:31:02. > :31:06.know their distances but it is an advantage to go later and see it
:31:06. > :31:10.written? Over the years, you can walk courses and it is fascinating
:31:10. > :31:14.because everybody says that is how it will ride but until a couple
:31:14. > :31:19.have been round, you're never quite sure. Also, with the time allowed,
:31:19. > :31:23.you never know how quick it will be. As soon as you see five or six go,
:31:23. > :31:28.you get a good idea. It is an advantage to be at the end. They
:31:28. > :31:33.say the golden era of showjumping was in the 1970s and 1980s but I
:31:33. > :31:38.think we are witnessing a new golden era now. Are all four of our
:31:38. > :31:42.gold medal team from the Olympics will be competing in the Grand Prix
:31:42. > :31:48.-- in the Cup and there is added glow because of what happened in
:31:48. > :31:53.the summer. Told it is, Nick Skelton, Ben mare,
:31:53. > :31:59.Scott Brash and Peter Charles. -- then there. This is the moment they
:31:59. > :32:03.have all been dreaming of for so many years. What do you think has
:32:03. > :32:07.made the difference from three years ago to now? Three years ago
:32:07. > :32:13.we had two Olympic courses and the aim was to be to improve the number
:32:13. > :32:17.of horses we had and build on the team of riders. We took conflict
:32:17. > :32:23.out of the team and we introduced competition. Younger riders with
:32:23. > :32:27.the older riders. The older riders have got the experience they need
:32:27. > :32:34.and the older realise -- the older riders realised there had to fight
:32:34. > :32:38.for their place. And it was dramatic. I think it was fate. I
:32:38. > :32:44.had even planned four-way jump-off in the way I had set the team off
:32:44. > :32:52.and for all that comes together was unbelievable. He has got us off yet
:32:52. > :32:57.again to a tremendous start! That was Nick Skelton at his very best.
:32:57. > :33:01.For all I have been through over the years and winning world
:33:01. > :33:06.championship medals and a World Cups, to get an Olympic medal, that
:33:06. > :33:11.is the cream on the cake. Especially to do it at a later
:33:11. > :33:15.stage in my life. I think we are lucky, Nick and Peter have waited a
:33:15. > :33:19.whole career until they have won and Olympic gold and we have
:33:19. > :33:23.managed to do it earlier. It is a great boost and hopefully we can
:33:23. > :33:27.keep the momentum going in our sport. To do it in front of your
:33:27. > :33:35.home crowd was unbelievable. I think for the whole games, I have
:33:35. > :33:41.not been to a bet against them back. I think I favourite moment was you
:33:41. > :33:47.jumping up onto the podium. We all got brief bout site. Everybody was
:33:47. > :33:55.excited and it went in one year and at the other. I thought, I am not
:33:55. > :34:00.missing this opportunity. Peter, it all came down to you. It did. When
:34:00. > :34:09.I look back on it now, every morning I have got my gold medal
:34:09. > :34:15.and now and then I look at it and get a tingle down my spine. What a
:34:15. > :34:20.tremendous crowd! 80 something as a rider that you really want to be in
:34:20. > :34:24.a position where you want to test yourself against the best. You want
:34:24. > :34:28.your standards and expectations to be as high as possible and I am
:34:29. > :34:36.glad I had that opportunity to do it. When you went back home, what
:34:36. > :34:40.was your welcome like? I live up a valley. There was a gold postbox in
:34:40. > :34:44.Peebles and that there were two up the valley and they are painted
:34:44. > :34:49.them all gold. I went down to the village and the local bakers had
:34:49. > :34:54.made a big cake with my face on it. I could not believe it. I get
:34:54. > :34:59.recognised a lot in public places now a lot more than we were, it is
:34:59. > :35:04.not just small kids, it is adults as well. I think our job is to try
:35:04. > :35:09.and promote the sport as much as possible. Everybody, young kids,
:35:09. > :35:14.the riding school people come up to. It has made a massive difference to
:35:14. > :35:20.the equestrian community in general. When I took the job, the only thing
:35:20. > :35:25.I wanted was to win a gold medal. We have achieved that. It is
:35:25. > :35:29.difficult to get their next step and build the motivation again but
:35:29. > :35:33.it is building now. There will be some changes in our nation's Cup
:35:33. > :35:38.format and then the World Games at the year after and then we are
:35:38. > :35:44.looking ahead to Rio. Britain have delivered gold, and memory for a
:35:44. > :35:49.lifetime. Even if I had not won gold, it would be fantastic but the
:35:49. > :35:53.not the same as London. I loved every minute of it. Those memories
:35:53. > :35:58.will be with me for the rest of my life. Are it was totally magical,
:35:58. > :36:03.wasn't it? The whole thing, right from the start. The atmosphere, the
:36:04. > :36:07.crowds, the venue. Everybody was a little unsure about doing it in
:36:07. > :36:13.Greenwich in London but it worked, and look at the memories we have
:36:13. > :36:18.got. The challenge now is finding the next generation of show jumpers,
:36:18. > :36:24.the younger ones to join the life - - the likes of Scott Brash and Ben
:36:24. > :36:27.Maher, so in the you have got fresh blood. We have got the old guard
:36:27. > :36:33.which are hanging in there and they did a brilliant job but the two
:36:33. > :36:37.young lads, they are coming through. We need more. Unique competition
:36:37. > :36:43.for places and we have certainly got that coming through now -- you
:36:43. > :36:48.need competition. A few years ago it Scott was in a class for riders
:36:48. > :36:53.under the age of 23. The winner this time round was a 13-year-old,
:36:53. > :36:59.Emily Ward. She took on riders ten years older. She went last in the
:36:59. > :37:03.jump-off and she was faster than all of them. She is with me now. A
:37:03. > :37:13.fantastic round, well done, you. Tell me about the horse you were

:37:14. > :37:19.riding. She is a bay mare called Which. She is very fast and a very
:37:19. > :37:23.careful horse. Who is is she? is owned by my dad and Michael
:37:23. > :37:29.Whitaker. Obviously Michael Whitaker is a big influence in your
:37:29. > :37:33.riding? Yes, he has helped me since I was six or seven. Ever since I
:37:33. > :37:40.started showjumping, he has been there and supported me with the
:37:40. > :37:48.best tactics as he can. Is this the biggest success so far, it has to
:37:48. > :37:52.be, doesn't it? Definitely, I was totally amazed. I think most of the
:37:52. > :37:58.people who support me where amazed how well I did yesterday. What next
:37:58. > :38:07.for you? Hopefully next year we can come and hopefully do the same as I
:38:07. > :38:11.did yesterday. Not much that I can say. And presumably, you're on your
:38:11. > :38:17.school holidays and back to school in January? Yes, back to school in
:38:17. > :38:20.January. Great to talk to, I hope that is the first of many
:38:20. > :38:23.interviews. That is Emily Ward who is only 13 at the moment and I
:38:23. > :38:28.think that is the beginning of a really successful career. I hope so.
:38:28. > :38:34.Thank you. And maybe one day we will see her in the line-up for
:38:34. > :38:41.this World Cup qualifier. The line-up includes the individual
:38:41. > :38:48.gold medallist from the London Olympics from Switzerland. We also
:38:48. > :38:58.have the individual silver and bronze medallists. Burka Schroder
:38:58. > :38:59.
:38:59. > :39:06.From Britain we have the big names, Nick Skelton on Big Star, his
:39:06. > :39:11.Olympic horse. He is also good indoors. The favourite is Ben Maher,
:39:11. > :39:19.he rides Triple X, his Olympic horse. He has been in flying form
:39:19. > :39:24.at Olympia this week. How much his former important? Ben Maher has
:39:24. > :39:30.been winning everything. He is in flying form and form and confidence
:39:30. > :39:35.since showjumping has everything. That goes through to the horse. He
:39:35. > :39:45.is the man in the form at the moment. Who for you at the top
:39:45. > :39:47.
:39:47. > :39:56.three to look out for? Gerken Schroder, he is one to look out for.
:39:56. > :40:02.A world-class force. Big Star with Nick Skelton. He will be keen to do
:40:02. > :40:08.well today for a start I just love being backstage here, being able to
:40:08. > :40:13.see everybody warming up. Cian O'Connor is one of the early ones
:40:13. > :40:17.and Tim Stockdale coming towards us. Last year he was standing next to
:40:17. > :40:22.make with his neck in a brace, having broken his neck in a
:40:22. > :40:26.horrible fall. He said he would be back and he is back riding in this
:40:26. > :40:36.class. Let's have a look at the virtual course map. Here is Mike
:40:36. > :40:36.
:40:36. > :40:44.Tucker to talk us through the whole 12 fences in all. Down across the
:40:44. > :40:50.arena, a big are bright at one point 60 the maximum. Left-handed
:40:50. > :40:59.coming back round the arena. A big oxer in the middle and then down to
:40:59. > :41:06.another are bright, this time the London bus at 1.6 again. As we come
:41:06. > :41:14.round to the big spread fence. One stride in there. And another big
:41:14. > :41:20.fence. Round the bottom and become to the virtual water ditch. That is
:41:20. > :41:30.a big fence on the other side of the arena. The upright and then to
:41:30. > :41:31.
:41:31. > :41:38.the final line across the arena with the treble combination. Then
:41:38. > :41:44.be big light oxer out to compete -- complete. It is a big course but it
:41:44. > :41:54.is also a world-class field. So, let's look at the start list. It is
:41:54. > :41:54.
:41:54. > :42:50.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:42:50. > :42:55.This is a competition which will have us on the edge of our seats
:42:55. > :43:00.throughout. The World Cup first started here in the late 1970s. We
:43:00. > :43:08.have had a roll of honour second to none. For me, Andy, this is the
:43:08. > :43:12.best field I have ever seen here. There certainly is an abundance of
:43:12. > :43:16.champion riders and Olympic medallist. All the top riders we
:43:16. > :43:24.can expect to see here. This is definitely the biggest, toughest
:43:24. > :43:27.competition held in Great Britain throughout the year. It is worth
:43:27. > :43:32.making that point very strongly. We get a lot of top riders. This
:43:32. > :43:42.indoor competition has more of the top league than any others. That is
:43:42. > :43:44.
:43:44. > :43:51.Eleven Olympic medallists. That is fantastic. You couldn't get any
:43:51. > :44:01.better. This is showjumping at the top of the tree. Who are we seeing
:44:01. > :44:01.
:44:01. > :44:11.there? David bain on the right. And there they all are. Edwina and
:44:11. > :44:24.
:44:24. > :44:32.a fascinating competition to get us under way. Rob Whitaker the first
:44:32. > :44:42.to go. He is ranked nine in Britain. And he was ninth in a World Cup in
:44:42. > :44:45.
:44:45. > :44:50.Cal gri. It is a horse that was tried as a potential horse for
:44:50. > :45:00.London, but didn't quite make it. But it is a very capable horse.
:45:00. > :45:06.
:45:06. > :45:12.the early riders is the time allowed is 64 seconds. This is not
:45:12. > :45:22.the biggest striding horse, let's see if he can get round in under 64.
:45:22. > :45:56.
:45:56. > :46:00.faults. And a big mistake at the pulled up and I'm not sure if he
:46:01. > :46:10.has quite made his mind up. Yeah, he is going to just pop another
:46:11. > :46:10.
:46:11. > :46:20.fence and things getting a bit too hot for him. Sensibly retiring.
:46:21. > :46:21.
:46:21. > :46:26.That gives you some idea, Mike, of how tough this course is. Rob just
:46:26. > :46:31.popping USA today over an easier fence to give the horse some
:46:31. > :46:36.confidence again. As you said, they come up thick and fast and they're
:46:36. > :46:41.big. And it is where horses can lose their confidence if they start
:46:41. > :46:45.struggling. It is the technicality of the courses, the distances and
:46:45. > :46:55.the fences coming so thick and fast. That was too much for Rob. We still
:46:55. > :47:04.haven't seen what the time is going to be like. Now the turn of Guy
:47:04. > :47:08.yams Williams. He sold his horse this time last year to Edwina Topps
:47:08. > :47:18.Alexander. She didn't get on as well with it and it has come back
:47:18. > :47:18.
:47:18. > :48:33.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:48:33. > :48:37.to Guy. The impression is the horse 63.88. You can call it good
:48:37. > :48:41.management, or call it a bit lucky. But he is inside. It doesn't matter,
:48:41. > :48:47.as you say, he has jumped a clear round and that was a brilliant
:48:47. > :48:52.piece of riegd. Look at the scope and power of the horse. We know he
:48:52. > :48:58.can jump the big, wide fences. He did well to balance him for that
:48:58. > :49:02.delicate wall. There he is, over the last fence. Squeaked inside the
:49:02. > :49:06.time. He is through. This combination looking better than
:49:06. > :49:11.ever now. It has taken some time to get back. But now beginning to look
:49:11. > :49:18.the sort of international combination they looked in the
:49:18. > :49:24.European championships of 2011. Now man from Ireland who won individual
:49:24. > :49:33.bronze, Cian O'Conner. He wasn't in the list of riders qualified for
:49:33. > :49:43.the last individual day in London. Then Bengtsson had to withdraw and
:49:43. > :49:43.
:49:43. > :50:27.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:50:27. > :50:33.he got the place and ended up with first ever World Cup that this
:50:33. > :50:37.combination has jumped in and they have struggled. Clare is talking to
:50:37. > :50:42.Guy. Yes, our first clear round. Everyone else struggling, but you
:50:42. > :50:47.made that look all right. Yes, I had him before and he has just come
:50:47. > :50:51.back. Well, he jumped super. you know how close you were to the
:50:52. > :50:56.time? Yes but I have to jump the Phelpss F you go too forward too
:50:56. > :51:02.early, he gets a bit strong. I would settle for a time fault.
:51:02. > :51:06.Great to have you back and rebuild that relationship? Yes, Wen you
:51:06. > :51:11.sale horse, you don't expect to get him back. I didn't want to sell him,
:51:11. > :51:21.but you have to feed the family and do the job. I'm lucky to have a
:51:21. > :51:29.
:51:29. > :51:37.second bite of the chry. Good luck. riders. Remember that great grey
:51:37. > :51:47.lors of Nick Skelton's, - horse of Nick Skelton's, that has been sold
:51:47. > :51:47.
:51:47. > :52:54.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:52:54. > :53:00.Down to the spwin nation. That last line, it comes at the end of a very
:53:00. > :53:06.big track. So it is four. The time actually a little better as you
:53:06. > :53:11.were suggest. There is the scope and power. You see the shortening.
:53:11. > :53:15.Had to really fight to jump that wall. But towards the end of the
:53:15. > :53:22.course after that oxer, he is having a big argue: Once the horse
:53:22. > :53:32.has got out of shape, she's got her head in the air and that vertical,
:53:32. > :53:40.
:53:40. > :53:50.first part of combination, coming down. Now for Norway. She is very
:53:50. > :53:50.
:53:50. > :54:56.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:54:56. > :55:04.horses. He only has a bitless are pretty light. That is an
:55:04. > :55:09.understatement, they're unbelievibly light. Eight faults
:55:09. > :55:16.for Geir there. They have got to keep going. That puts the pressure
:55:16. > :55:20.on. That is when the mistakes come. Yes, you see Geir riding very
:55:20. > :55:30.forward out of the corner. Just a bit too much pace and that is why
:55:30. > :55:31.
:55:31. > :55:41.he had that front rail down. A bit unlucky at that fence. Now the
:55:41. > :55:41.
:55:41. > :56:50.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:56:50. > :56:55.Austrian rider. With a horse we time. He didn't get away with that
:56:55. > :57:00.one. He did everything right. He just touched it. Those light poles
:57:00. > :57:05.again. It is four, but it is a good round. One feels they're beginning
:57:06. > :57:12.to get the hang of the course. An early draw in a competition like
:57:12. > :57:18.this is not always the best. There is the power and scope. Just felt
:57:18. > :57:22.that as he was coming down to that last line, having opened the horse
:57:23. > :57:28.up, didn't quite, he jumped the first one, very unlucky in the
:57:28. > :57:35.middle. Riding for his life all the way. But it is a very fast four
:57:35. > :57:42.faults. That might count. A good point. I think he was 49 seconds.
:57:42. > :57:47.49.6. It is worth remembering that. That could be involved. Now Peter
:57:47. > :57:55.Charles he has had a busy day. Two of his youngest daughters were in
:57:55. > :58:05.the ponies this morning. They have a family who are very talented and
:58:05. > :58:05.
:58:05. > :59:11.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:59:11. > :59:17.Peter Charles' best. This man is certainly focused for Rio 2016. The
:59:17. > :59:27.other exciting thing is all a white. She has been a super own and to the
:59:27. > :59:32.
:59:32. > :59:42.was not sure about jumping this horse in this class but she has
:59:42. > :59:49.come good there. He will be thrilled with that. Peter is so
:59:49. > :59:55.fired up after London and so he should be. We turn our attention to
:59:55. > :00:00.the lady who had to be reserved for London, Tina Fletcher. This is an
:00:00. > :00:07.outstanding horse owned by Lady Harris and Lady Kirkham. What super
:00:07. > :00:12.owners they have been. Tina is recovering from injury. She had a
:00:12. > :00:19.real confidence boost here on Wednesday night. She finished
:00:19. > :00:29.second. She was in two minds. Her injury had taken a lot out of her.
:00:29. > :00:32.
:00:32. > :00:38.She went so well but not this than the first fence coming down.
:00:38. > :00:48.The horse not quite focused. Only two clear rounds. Tina has got to
:00:48. > :01:00.
:01:01. > :01:06.make it to the Olympics. This is a power jumping horse. As a reserve,
:01:06. > :01:16.you play a part in the team and Tina did that 110 %. She did a
:01:16. > :01:27.
:01:27. > :01:35.wonderful job at supporting the will be interesting. Not quite the
:01:35. > :01:41.fastest. But still quicker than many. A very well-built course. A
:01:41. > :01:51.proper test towards the end of the course where you have got to be
:01:51. > :01:53.
:01:53. > :01:59.very careful over the two huge verticals. It is particularly
:01:59. > :02:06.different -- difficult on power jumping big striding horses. Here
:02:06. > :02:16.is one of the superstars of Swedish sport. She has been very successful
:02:16. > :02:23.
:02:23. > :02:28.for Sweden and won an Olympic medal before the Olympic Games. The horse
:02:28. > :02:32.got a knock and so missed the Games. The worst fortnight that the horse
:02:33. > :02:42.could have been off. But this is a very talented competition and there
:02:43. > :03:14.
:03:14. > :03:24.lady rider. But she rides to her inside the time. The word scope
:03:24. > :03:33.
:03:33. > :03:40.comes to mind. There is enough for Great Britain. -- clear round
:03:40. > :03:46.number 3, 4 Sweden. Let's talk to the man who recorded the second of
:03:46. > :03:50.the clear rounds. You were worried that she was not up to the level.
:03:50. > :04:00.You cannot keep an old dog down like myself and I had some belief
:04:00. > :04:04.in her. My word, you had to write her. That is the biggest trouble if
:04:04. > :04:12.you run out of rooms in the middle. She likes to go forward but we had
:04:12. > :04:17.to shorten her. You said, come back, come back, yes, get her back.
:04:17. > :04:21.I land from A to B, I make room. A lot of riders ran out of room. That
:04:21. > :04:31.is the hardest fence on the course to jump. He did brilliantly well,
:04:31. > :04:40.
:04:40. > :04:44.well done, Peter. -- you did Maria Moneta or, he is making his
:04:44. > :04:54.mark. Italy have rarely been without a major star for a number
:04:54. > :05:06.
:05:06. > :05:16.popular sport. This guy is a big favourite with the crowds. You can
:05:16. > :05:28.
:05:28. > :05:37.sense his enthusiasm and love for Charles made about the extra stride.
:05:37. > :05:43.He gets the extra one. He is getting a little bit of a rattle on.
:05:43. > :05:47.I think he said, bother, with the last two fences down. He did
:05:47. > :05:57.everything right and Toll Bar point. Although he got the extra stride,
:05:57. > :06:08.
:06:09. > :06:17.the balance and rhythm did go. It with his granddaughter. He is one
:06:17. > :06:23.of the course designers, part of the team. This is very much a
:06:23. > :06:29.family show. There are huge numbers of children here. They love it. We
:06:29. > :06:34.see one of Great Britain's leading lady riders, Laura Renwick. My word,
:06:34. > :06:44.is she in form. She spent a lot of time in Europe this summer. Five
:06:44. > :07:01.
:07:01. > :07:11.against the clock. He is not a very big horse but he has a massive
:07:11. > :07:44.
:07:44. > :07:49.stride and the heart of a lion. Renwick of Great Britain. Clare
:07:49. > :07:55.Balding is now talking to the Swedish rider. She has the
:07:55. > :08:01.brightest jacket of the lot. Under fast-track. I had to run him to get
:08:01. > :08:06.the distance is right. He is a fast horse. I thought I would let him
:08:06. > :08:10.cut the corners of a bit to make sure we were inside the time.
:08:10. > :08:15.cannot walk the course for the jump-off so will you go and study
:08:15. > :08:20.the map to see if you can cut corners? Yes, I will. Hopefully
:08:20. > :08:30.there will be not many more clears for my sake! But I will go and see
:08:30. > :08:36.
:08:36. > :08:45.where I can catch them. Good luck. bell goes to get through to the
:08:45. > :08:51.starting line. He does that sensibly and easily. This horse was
:08:51. > :08:57.4th in the Olympic Games in Athens. This man hails from Munich, a long
:08:57. > :09:07.drive to get here. 4th from the Grand Prix in Munich. He has
:09:07. > :09:15.
:09:15. > :09:20.already jumped in Helsinki and Oslo powerful scallion -- stallion will
:09:20. > :09:30.have no problem with power and scope. He looks to be obedient on
:09:30. > :09:37.
:09:37. > :09:42.the Flat. You should be able to get He kept going, he did not back up
:09:42. > :09:52.in the middle. That second part of the combination is causing a lot of
:09:52. > :10:06.
:10:06. > :10:14.German show jumpers. A big striding horse. Quite short between those
:10:14. > :10:17.two verticals. No chance of all jumping the middle part.
:10:17. > :10:23.Stockdale and the crowd love him. This time last year, you might
:10:23. > :10:30.remember he had his neck in a huge collar. He had broken his neck
:10:30. > :10:33.earlier in the season. When you think both Nick Skelton and Tim
:10:33. > :10:37.Stockdale and of course Peter Charles have all broken their necks
:10:37. > :10:43.and are still riding as well as ever, it is amazing. Results show
:10:43. > :10:52.jumpers are a tough breed. Wake you coming back? I am right with them,
:10:52. > :11:02.of course! Our generation, if you break something, you just bandage
:11:02. > :11:11.
:11:11. > :11:21.it up and keep going. Tim, they do when the horse stride and he had a
:11:21. > :11:38.
:11:38. > :11:42.combination and it has all gone wrong. He wanted to add the stride
:11:42. > :11:48.and lost his rhythm completely. Under a lot of pressure towards the
:11:48. > :11:58.end of the course. It is not his day, unfortunately. No, it is not
:11:58. > :11:59.
:11:59. > :12:05.and he is going to retire. When he started riding again after his
:12:05. > :12:13.injury, he really did show some good form. I think we will see more
:12:13. > :12:19.of the combination in time. Tim is disappointed with that but
:12:19. > :12:24.showjumping is them up and down sport. You have to shrug your
:12:24. > :12:34.disappointments of and regroup. Let's have a look at this early
:12:34. > :13:09.
:13:09. > :13:19.ended up on half a stride and it is regularly this year. He will not
:13:19. > :13:28.
:13:28. > :13:38.Oxon, it is not the biggest fence but it is easy for horses to not be
:13:38. > :13:50.
:13:50. > :13:53.focused at the beginning of the flowing forward. Horses that cannot
:13:53. > :13:58.shorten a speed are out of their comfort zone and that's where the
:13:58. > :14:03.problems are coming from. You're getting great technical virtue of
:14:03. > :14:13.spot on! It is a fluent course but they need to sit on their hocks for
:14:13. > :14:17.the last combination. Coming down again there. Started out as a
:14:17. > :14:25.promising international event or the for show jumping. His cousin
:14:25. > :14:30.was in the Swedish team in London. A very good Swedish a question
:14:30. > :14:35.family. John's a good round until the combination. It is the middle
:14:35. > :14:40.part, if you keep coming level to the first part, the horses are
:14:40. > :14:50.travelling forward and they don't manage the middle section. The
:14:50. > :14:52.
:14:52. > :14:55.riders have to decide whether they add a stride to the combination.
:14:55. > :15:04.Belgium one of several teams with France and Germany who really
:15:04. > :15:11.performed way under their potential. This horse has been in a number of
:15:11. > :15:21.Nations Cups for Belgium this year. Certainly showing formatter very

:57:55. > :58:05.next. A World Cup leg that is worthy of the competition. In comes
:58:05. > :58:14.
:58:14. > :58:24.rankings now for many years. Can he finished it off for France and put
:58:24. > :58:34.
:58:34. > :58:44.is very elegant and stylish. But that oxer going into the double has
:58:44. > :59:08.
:59:08. > :59:12.Just the one for France, that will be Penelope Leprevost. No Kevin
:59:12. > :59:22.Staut. Finishing on four faults. Giving us the nine clear rounds
:59:22. > :59:34.
:59:34. > :59:42.that will go through to the jump will go through. We will have a
:59:42. > :59:51.look at those in a moment. Here they are. Britain come up in a
:59:51. > :59:58.moment. Britain with two of the eight. You can see the kours being
:59:58. > :00:08.changed. -- course being changed. A great team out there that quickly
:00:08. > :00:09.
:00:09. > :00:19.change it all around. Well the eight that go through, the two
:00:19. > :00:38.
:00:38. > :00:47.British riders will go first. Guy the winner today. Diniz will be the
:00:47. > :00:55.name there for Portugal. Penelope Leprevost giving us the final round.
:00:56. > :01:01.Marcus Ehning misses out with four faults snoo. I Tim stock --
:01:01. > :01:08.Stockdale is with me. Nick Skelton said he has a great draw. He can
:01:08. > :01:12.see what the Dutch riders do first. What do you make of it? It will be
:01:12. > :01:22.a tough jump off. What will be influential is the London bus.
:01:22. > :01:24.
:01:24. > :01:29.There is a stride to be taken out there. Now, can Gerco, he has power.
:01:29. > :01:34.Whether they have straight speed, I am not sure. Nick can watch them go
:01:34. > :01:41.and pressurise them into trying to make a mistake. What worries me is
:01:41. > :01:47.they lay it down and Nick has to do something unbelievable. This is the
:01:47. > :01:54.course that they will face. Here is Andy to talk you through it.
:01:54. > :02:00.first jump is this oxer that was number nine and right handed to the
:02:00. > :02:06.little vertical at ten. Sweeping back to the big oxer. Run on down
:02:06. > :02:10.here it is longer. The first part of the combination is taken away.
:02:10. > :02:15.Two strides in the middle. That big oxer coming out. There is a tight
:02:15. > :02:22.turn back to what was the second Phelps. And look at this run, all
:02:22. > :02:27.the way down to the London bus. As tick Stockdale said, that is a very
:02:27. > :02:31.influential fence. A big gallop and that last fence. It was the second
:02:32. > :02:38.part of the double. It will be a very quick round. Do you know the
:02:38. > :02:43.riders, Tim, who are gutsy and will go all out for this. Yes and you
:02:43. > :02:51.know they won't leave anything out. They will give it everything. The
:02:51. > :02:59.ones that are look for firstor nothing. There is Nick Skelton,
:02:59. > :03:03.Marilyn. That is nert bright blue jacket. She will be as brave as a
:03:03. > :03:08.lion. She will go for that London bus and turn for home and there
:03:08. > :03:13.will be a big yell. Schroeder is a tough guy and he is not in this for
:03:13. > :03:17.second. I think we have got a fascinating jump off. If you were
:03:18. > :03:23.Guy and going first, would you go for the safe clear round? That is
:03:23. > :03:27.not Guy's style. He wants to do something. He has Gotts to be
:03:27. > :03:32.careful Athletic not go too quick. He has got to make the others make
:03:32. > :03:38.mistake and not leave anything too open. But not trying to be too
:03:38. > :03:45.quick. There he goes. He is being shouted out by the announcer, not
:03:45. > :03:49.letting anyone rush him. He will come through that tunnel soon. Our
:03:50. > :03:57.first rider is a British one. We have Guy Williams and Peter Charles
:03:58. > :04:01.and Nick Skelton in the jump off of eight. So Guy Williams pauses in
:04:01. > :04:10.the tunnel. The curtains are open and there will be an explosion of
:04:10. > :04:16.sound and he is an interesting one to go first? Yes, Guy is a nast --
:04:16. > :04:25.fast rider. But we had a slow time. If he lets this horse off the leash,
:04:25. > :04:33.he sometimes loses control. But we expect him to go for its. Three for
:04:33. > :04:38.Britain in the eight. Two of them going right at the beginning, which
:04:38. > :04:48.isn't to their advantage. But they're certainly experienced. Guy
:04:48. > :04:49.
:04:49. > :04:54.just checking that clock over head. They are just wondering whether
:04:54. > :05:02.thepbtd rung the bell. That clock that Guy's been anxious about, just
:05:02. > :05:09.making sure he hadn't missed the bell. Probably last checks being
:05:10. > :05:15.done on the timing, which in a competition like this, 110,000
:05:15. > :05:19.euros at stake, 25% going to the winner. I think probably they're
:05:19. > :05:28.just making sure that all is right. It is a timing issue that we are
:05:28. > :05:33.waiting for. And there is Guy keeping the horse cool and calm.
:05:33. > :05:39.Exactly what he has to do. It's not what you want. You want to get on
:05:39. > :05:43.with it. He has warmed his horse up and tried to peak his horse to
:05:43. > :05:53.start his line. The last thing you need is this break in concentration.
:05:53. > :05:57.
:05:57. > :06:07.Here we go. The last eight. Against the k clock to win the London leg
:06:07. > :06:38.
:06:38. > :06:48.of the Rolex world Cup. Of the wall. You see, we thought that wall
:06:48. > :06:50.
:06:50. > :06:55.would come down. It is a steady round. Eight it is. 38.28, a steady
:06:55. > :07:00.round and there will be plenty of places where errors are made. Two
:07:00. > :07:07.long gallops. It is fascinating that is for sure. Guy Williams,
:07:07. > :07:12.eight faults in that time of 38.28. Here is the first fence that Guy
:07:12. > :07:18.had down. Just slightly sloppy over that one. As he was opening the
:07:18. > :07:25.stride up, Titus can sometimes get a bit strong and turning in the air.
:07:26. > :07:29.He hit that pretty hard. Now turn of Peter Charles. They don't come
:07:29. > :07:35.much more experienced than this man. But one has to remind ourselves
:07:35. > :07:45.that this is a mare without a huge amount of experience. But she did
:07:45. > :07:45.
:07:45. > :08:41.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:08:41. > :08:46.jump a beautiful first round. Owned Peter, brilliant piece of riding.
:08:46. > :08:52.Clear 37.54. It could be beatable, but he has put it down.
:08:52. > :08:57.Particularly going clear. He has jufrpdz his clear round on this
:08:57. > :09:03.inexperienced horse. -- jumped his clear round. They will jump tighter
:09:03. > :09:08.at the top of the arena. A wonderfully athletic mare. He was a
:09:08. > :09:14.long way off the vertical and she showed a lot of heart to jump the
:09:14. > :09:17.fence. He was around 30 second over the wall. He will be there or
:09:17. > :09:27.thereabouts. But I think they can go quicker. I would agree with Tim.
:09:27. > :09:27.
:09:27. > :10:17.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:10:17. > :10:25.I think this is one of the biggest is up. This is way quicker. 36.3, a
:10:25. > :10:30.new leader and a smooth round from the Swedish champion. Tim you said
:10:30. > :10:35.Malin would be brave and she was. She showed her intent. Look how
:10:35. > :10:39.fast she is off that. That is a huge vertical. She got the wrong
:10:39. > :10:43.distance on the turn back to the purple fence and ended up going
:10:43. > :10:48.eight strides and I think she wanted to go seven. But look at
:10:48. > :10:53.careful he was. She is really having a run for home. Is it an
:10:53. > :10:58.advantage that she is so small and light? Can't be a disadvantage I
:10:58. > :11:04.think. But she has grown with him and she is very much in harmony
:11:04. > :11:12.with the horse. Here is a danger. The man from the Netherlands. Two
:11:12. > :11:22.of them in it, remember. Marc Houtzager. Again quick. Part of the
:11:22. > :11:24.
:11:24. > :11:34.silver medal team that jumped off against Britain for the team gold.
:11:34. > :12:01.
:12:01. > :12:07.She needs to lands over the bus in it. A beautiful round and he has
:12:07. > :12:14.taken nearly two seconds off it. Some performance. That is pure
:12:14. > :12:19.class. Top rider, top horse. All the ability and he looked as though
:12:19. > :12:23.he was in cruise control. certainly did. That was an
:12:24. > :12:28.incredible round to take two seconds off Malin Baryard-
:12:28. > :12:36.Johnsson's time. He landed in balance. He had his eye on the
:12:36. > :12:42.fence. He seemed to do the whole round within himself. But so much
:12:42. > :12:49.ability. It is wonderful. Very impressive and there is another
:12:49. > :12:59.flying Dutchman to come. And he is next up. There is the man who won
:12:59. > :13:03.
:13:03. > :13:13.individual silver. Riding the horse he rode in London. A new time to
:13:13. > :13:49.
:13:50. > :13:55.beat, 36.67. Where he he make it going to put him down behind Peter
:13:55. > :14:05.Charles in fourth. That's what has to happen if you are going to win
:14:05. > :14:07.
:14:07. > :14:12.this. What about the next? This man will want to win. He certainly will.
:14:12. > :14:22.He so deserved his team gold medal. They were the most consistent
:14:22. > :14:29.
:14:29. > :14:39.combination. This would mean a lot and there's lots of room to open a
:14:39. > :14:39.
:14:39. > :15:20.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:15:20. > :15:30.So unlucky. Those bricks are so those horrible little bricks from
:15:30. > :15:41.
:15:41. > :15:48.appeared to be motoring. It shows the class. Desperately unlucky with
:15:48. > :15:57.a brick out of the wall. But still even at that kind of pace not quick
:15:57. > :16:07.enough to get close to the winning time. Two ladies to finish, two
:16:07. > :16:44.
:16:44. > :16:49.quite wide. A big change of mind vertical is so light and delicate
:16:49. > :16:59.at that pace. All sorts of things happening now, there are so much
:16:59. > :17:10.
:17:10. > :17:20.pressure on the riders to be the fascinating jump off. They have a
:17:20. > :17:34.
:17:34. > :17:42.riders. They certainly are. This lady can take pressure. She has the
:17:42. > :17:52.skills, she will need some luck as well when she has to go quickly. A
:17:52. > :18:00.
:18:00. > :18:06.very happy man at the moment. 34 Dutchman has got it. We have been
:18:06. > :18:12.very lucky to see these horses jump, as we said before the class, these
:18:12. > :18:18.are some of the best combinations in world show jumping. Poetry in
:18:18. > :18:28.motion, but jump off. There's no doubt, we have seen the best horses
:18:28. > :18:28.
:18:28. > :19:31.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:19:31. > :19:35.World Cup list. Guy Williams, good The winner is with us.
:19:35. > :19:45.Congratulations. When you came out of the jump-off you thought you
:19:45. > :19:49.
:19:49. > :19:58.have not done enough. I was not 100% sure. How much does it mean to
:19:59. > :20:06.to win at the qualifier here? Fantastic. The horse won three
:20:06. > :20:11.Grand Prix. It could not be better. It was great to see we hit,
:20:11. > :20:18.congratulations. Give the microphone back to Tim! We watched
:20:18. > :20:23.the jump off together. It was so interesting. The risks they take.
:20:23. > :20:29.Yes, it is a big course but these are world class horses and riders.
:20:29. > :20:37.You can see the margins. The wall was very big. To take the straight,
:20:38. > :20:41.he knew he left it slightly ajar. A full stride out, the big turn back.
:20:41. > :20:47.The horse is galloping through the corners, he has to keep in balance
:20:47. > :20:52.to do the big jumps. The combination is to shorten and the
:20:52. > :20:56.vertical was exquisite. That's where he won it. It was a question
:20:56. > :21:05.of could it be speedy enough to put Nick under pressure, he knew what
:21:05. > :21:10.to do. That's where he knew he left the door slightly ajar. Nick tried
:21:10. > :21:16.to take strike out but nudged the top of the bus. It is so fragile.
:21:16. > :21:20.Those bricks are like Lego bricks. It is so delicate. It is the
:21:20. > :21:27.difference between winning and losing, a bit of a touch. Peter
:21:27. > :21:32.Charles in third place. It was a cunning round. It was smooth and
:21:32. > :21:38.neat. He knew he would be penalising the others if they went
:21:38. > :21:42.too slow. He ended up getting a good ribbon on third. Fantastic.
:21:43. > :21:47.The show jumpers are getting ready for the prize-giving. We will show
:21:47. > :21:51.you that in a moment. The medallists we haven't heard from in
:21:51. > :21:55.terms of the question of medallists are the event is. They were here
:21:55. > :22:05.earlier in the week and Nicola Wilson and Zara Phillips were the
:22:05. > :22:07.
:22:07. > :22:11.ones I interviewed. We have three silver medal-winning team here.
:22:11. > :22:15.Apart from the dancing exploits, what else has changed? What has
:22:15. > :22:20.been the impact of your success at the Olympics? I think it is an
:22:20. > :22:25.awareness of what we do, the sport we love. At encouraging people to
:22:25. > :22:29.come and watch and support and get involved in eventing which I found
:22:29. > :22:34.in Yorkshire has been fantastic. There was concern about Greenwich
:22:34. > :22:40.as a venue among so the question community. How did it work out and
:22:40. > :22:45.was it positive? I think so. I was one of the ones he was a bit
:22:45. > :22:51.negative. Why couldn't we go to one of them near by but it worked.
:22:51. > :22:57.There were so many new faces there to the sport and they left saying
:22:57. > :23:03.they are good at this and it's fun. And proved eventing can be staged
:23:03. > :23:07.anywhere. I absolutely. Getting the people there but think it's just
:23:07. > :23:13.for rich people prancing around on horses. It is a proper sport.
:23:13. > :23:17.it seems to have a broad appeal. Your profile is connected to other
:23:17. > :23:23.things as well as your sport. But how proud were you to represent
:23:23. > :23:31.your country at the Olympics? was incredible. To be part of it,
:23:31. > :23:36.to be asked to ride for a country at the Olympics, to be involved, it
:23:36. > :23:42.was the most amazing experience in the world. The whole experience,
:23:42. > :23:46.you can't put it into words. It is the best show on earth and the best
:23:46. > :23:51.sport you could possibly want to be involved in. Everyone is there.
:23:51. > :23:57.Well done on a team silver. Congratulations.
:23:57. > :24:01.The thrill of riding at the Olympics. The event is get a break.
:24:02. > :24:07.The show jumpers keep going all gear round. Yes, we have to keep
:24:07. > :24:12.going. It is all year round. This is towards the end of what the top
:24:12. > :24:18.horses do, a break in January but it's pretty relentless. We can see
:24:18. > :24:25.the prize giving starting now. How were the eight winner was Mark?
:24:25. > :24:29.Totally deserved, pure class. All of the scope and the ability.
:24:29. > :24:33.Beautifully ridden. It looked like he was cruising in the jump off.
:24:33. > :24:39.That is what true class is all about. He made it look comfortable.
:24:39. > :24:44.The pressure of the other riders, they could not live with it.
:24:44. > :24:49.Nick Skelton at Peter Charles, they may not think it but it is fine for
:24:49. > :24:59.the Netherlands to win here because of the Olympics. We will allow them
:24:59. > :25:00.
:25:00. > :25:10.that. Over to Mike. The winner from the Netherlands, a very proud
:25:10. > :25:14.
:25:14. > :25:24.moment for Stowe we await the One of the key legs in the winter
:25:24. > :25:24.
:25:24. > :26:08.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 137 seconds
:26:08. > :26:14.circuit. Against the Netherlands Well, you could say this afternoon
:26:14. > :26:21.that it was one gold medal to Britain in London 2012 but this
:26:21. > :26:27.afternoon in this Rolex World Cup lek, it is a gold medal to this man
:26:27. > :26:31.for the Netherlands. Just getting revenge for the jump-off in London.
:26:31. > :26:39.What a wonderful jumping competition be witnessed.
:26:39. > :26:42.Tremendous. A gorgeous looking a horse. Is all the attention for me!
:26:43. > :26:48.They have another session tonight to go to, tomorrow evening the
:26:48. > :26:51.Grand Prix, how many horses will we see again? Not all of them but we
:26:51. > :26:57.would like to see most of them because they're a two major prizes
:26:57. > :27:04.to win. That is the first, tomorrow, big money, the prestige. You will
:27:04. > :27:09.be able to see all of the fun of the fair at Olympia tomorrow
:27:09. > :27:15.evening from 6:25pm. You can see all of the Dog agility and show
:27:16. > :27:20.jumping classes. It is live on the red button. We will bring you the
:27:20. > :27:25.highlights on Christmas Eve. We are back with the Welsh Grand National,
:27:25. > :27:32.whether allowing. Chepstow is waterlogged. They would keep having
:27:32. > :27:36.a look and hope to race and we will be on air on BBC Two. Listen to 5
:27:36. > :27:45.Live on the conditions and also for coverage of the King George at
:27:45. > :27:51.Kempton on Boxing Day. We have had a sensational show jumping. Yes.
:27:51. > :27:56.looks like racing at times. For Nick Skelton and Big Star, the do
:27:56. > :28:01.you move on? He gave it his best shot, he was desperately unlucky at
