:00:24. > :00:30.The crowd are on their feet in the grandstand. Good footwork again.

:00:30. > :00:40.Rebecca Adlington is bringing it home for Great Britain. Denise

:00:40. > :00:50.

:00:50. > :00:57.Great Britain get the gold medal! Yes! Yes! Kelly Holmes for Great

:00:57. > :01:06.Britain. What a performance. are absolutely brilliant. Great

:01:06. > :01:11.When it comes to European Championships, no-one is in better

:01:11. > :01:16.shape than Great Britain. Gold for our dressage last weekend. This

:01:16. > :01:21.weekend, can our eventers make it 19 golds in a row in Germany? Held

:01:21. > :01:26.every two years, these are the 30th HSBC FEI European Eventing

:01:26. > :01:32.Championships. Not only is there a team gold on offer, but an

:01:32. > :01:42.individual title, too. # Will you recognise me? #

:01:42. > :01:51.

:01:51. > :01:56.What a fantastic performance! The European Champion for Great

:01:56. > :02:00.Britain. Sheila Willcox and High and Mighty,

:02:00. > :02:10.champion of Europe. She is the European Champion. British riders

:02:10. > :02:11.

:02:11. > :02:15.have won this 18 times. It is going really well. The Germans

:02:15. > :02:25.entertained us with beer when we arrived at the end of the cotsz-

:02:25. > :02:27.

:02:27. > :02:31.country walk. -- cross-country walk. I remember it so vividly. You know

:02:31. > :02:35.nothing has changed even though ten million euros have been spent on it

:02:35. > :02:42.to make all the surface all-weather. The whole place has still got the

:02:42. > :02:47.same feel, the same heart, the same soul. It is wonderful. But for the

:02:47. > :02:52.14 nations competing, it will be a very different Luhmuhlen. The

:02:52. > :02:56.Showground here has undergone a nine million euro makeover. This

:02:56. > :02:59.cross-country course has been designed by Captain Mark Phillips.

:02:59. > :03:03.It is very different to the compact Olympic course at Greenwich.

:03:03. > :03:07.Nevertheless, what happens over the next few days will have a huge

:03:07. > :03:14.bearing on selection for 2012. Now, though, it is time to have a closer

:03:14. > :03:19.look at the British team. Nicola Wilson was part of the gold

:03:19. > :03:22.medal-winning team two years ago. The 34-year-old will be performing

:03:22. > :03:28.the role of Pathfinder. It is lovely to be part of the team and

:03:28. > :03:33.to go out first on a horse I have ridden for so many years. It is

:03:33. > :03:41.very exciting. Anything can happen. We keep fingers crossed that we

:03:41. > :03:44.come home clear and inside or as near as possible. Piggy French won

:03:44. > :03:48.individual silver at the last European Championships. Will make

:03:48. > :03:52.her first appearance as part of the team this time around. It is what

:03:52. > :03:57.we all work for. I get such a thrill out of riding for my country

:03:57. > :04:00.and trying to do as well as possible. We usually are a very

:04:00. > :04:05.strong nation at it. To be with people competing in the same team

:04:05. > :04:10.as the likes of William Fox-Pitt and Mary King, that sort of calibre,

:04:10. > :04:16.is very thrilling. Mary King's teenage daughter has been selected

:04:16. > :04:22.for the Junior British Eventing Team and the 50-year-old will be

:04:22. > :04:26.out to set the perfect example by winning her fifth title. I am old.

:04:26. > :04:33.We are very much a team. We are all in it together. There's great team

:04:33. > :04:39.spirit. We are looking forward to a good week. Mr Eventing, William

:04:39. > :04:43.Fox-Pitt, is targeting a seventh European team title aboard Cool

:04:43. > :04:49.Mountain. The Germans, in Luhmuhlen, which is one of their biggest

:04:50. > :04:56.events, they run here regularly, the horses are produced here. The

:04:56. > :05:00.terrain they are very comfortable with. There was bad news for Polly

:05:00. > :05:05.Stockton who was forced to withdraw moments before the start of her

:05:05. > :05:09.dressage test leaving the 37-year- old disappointed. You know your

:05:09. > :05:13.horse inside out and I knew he wasn't 100%. The vet has had a look.

:05:13. > :05:17.We are not sure what is wrong. We decided in the best interests of

:05:17. > :05:23.the horse to go out there on the cross-country, it is too big an ask,

:05:23. > :05:29.if they are not feeling 110%. I'm gutted. The final member of the

:05:29. > :05:33.line-up taking part in the individual competition only is 21-

:05:33. > :05:37.year-old Laura Collett who becomes the youngest rider to grace the

:05:37. > :05:47.squad in over two decades. I'm delighted to welcome the reigning

:05:47. > :05:49.

:05:49. > :05:53.European Champion Tina Cook to the show. After withdrawing him from

:05:53. > :05:58.Badminton, he had to have a course of antibiotics and was very, very

:05:58. > :06:03.ill and had to have blood transfusions. He nearly died. He's

:06:03. > :06:07.alive and putting on weight very well at home. I think I'm not going

:06:07. > :06:10.to be able to get him fit enough to get him out this season. People

:06:10. > :06:15.will be worried about you qualifying for the Olympics next

:06:15. > :06:18.year. What is the situation there? As bizarre as it may seem, we are

:06:18. > :06:22.the reigning bronze medallists. We are not qualified as we speak. I

:06:22. > :06:25.will be working on him over the winter to come out next season to

:06:26. > :06:30.get him qualified in the spring. And get my form back. The British

:06:30. > :06:35.team is so strong, I need to get back into the reckoning and get

:06:35. > :06:39.selected for London. Speaking of the British team, the record in the

:06:39. > :06:43.European Championships is quite outstanding 21 team golds out of 29.

:06:43. > :06:47.It looks as if it is there for the taking. Is it that simple?

:06:47. > :06:50.Championship can throw up all sorts of surprises. There is a strong

:06:50. > :06:55.opposition out there. The Germans have 12 riders here. They will be

:06:55. > :06:58.picking four of their very best. Four of their very best are World

:06:58. > :07:03.Champions, they are reigning Olympic Champions. Nothing is

:07:03. > :07:07.predicted at all. You need a bit of luck on your side. Well those are

:07:07. > :07:12.Tina's thoughts. Let's take a closer look at the newest member of

:07:12. > :07:17.the squad, riding as an individual. Here is the young lady they are all

:07:17. > :07:26.talking about, Laura Collett, the youngest rider competing at this

:07:26. > :07:30.year's Badminton. She's looked after him all the way round. I read

:07:30. > :07:36.a headline that said "Laura Collett takes Badminton by storm." Would

:07:36. > :07:42.that be fair? On the first day, I was very early to go, I was like

:07:42. > :07:47.fifth in on the first day of dressage and I ended up after two

:07:48. > :07:52.days in third place. For me, it was unbelievable. Here is the young

:07:52. > :08:00.lady that has put her name very much in contention for the title,

:08:00. > :08:04.Laura Collett. I first went on a horse when I was two. I went

:08:04. > :08:08.through showing until I was 13. That is when I decided I wanted to

:08:08. > :08:13.do something more challenging and I dropped very lucky with the first

:08:13. > :08:18.pony I bought, who took me to my first pony championship. I went

:08:18. > :08:23.from there. When you got bitten by the bug, you were lucky to get on

:08:23. > :08:29.the World Class Programme? I did at the beginning of 2005, so before I

:08:29. > :08:37.went to the Pony Europeans, that has been a massive boost. They help

:08:37. > :08:41.with everything. He is unbelievable, the way he has helped me. Even

:08:41. > :08:46.through the decisions of selling the pony and setting me up for life,

:08:46. > :08:55.really. I sold Spring and I never wanted to, but he said it is the

:08:55. > :09:03.right thing to do for my career. So I sold him and bought a horse and

:09:03. > :09:08.he was right when he said, you know... Yeah. I went with the pony

:09:08. > :09:13.team way back, probably in 2005, with the European Championship and

:09:13. > :09:17.Laura was on that team. I think what really hit you was her

:09:17. > :09:22.coolness under pressure. Cool. Well, at the moment, I feel quite cool

:09:22. > :09:27.and calm. It has not kicked off yet. I am sure I won't be very cool and

:09:27. > :09:30.calm during the week. Just really excited to have got here and it's

:09:30. > :09:34.been the worst five or six weeks ever. You think something is going

:09:34. > :09:38.to go wrong. Once you get selected, you want to go the next day. With

:09:38. > :09:43.horses, anything can happen. Does it matter to you at all if someone

:09:43. > :09:50.trots out the stat that you are the youngest member of the British

:09:50. > :09:54.eventing team since 1989? Yeah, that is quite scary. Yeah, I feel

:09:54. > :09:58.confident in a way because I know him inside out. It is not like

:09:58. > :10:04.having a new horse and coming here. I have to keep remembering that. It

:10:04. > :10:10.is another competition even though it is probably the biggest one of

:10:10. > :10:15.my life. Laura was in third place after the dressage. Let's see how

:10:15. > :10:20.after the dressage. Let's see how they have fared here. Laura could

:10:20. > :10:23.hard I will have hoped for a better dressage test. Her score was the

:10:23. > :10:29.best of the British contingent and a great start to her senior

:10:29. > :10:39.international career. As for the British team members, Mary King is

:10:39. > :10:45.

:10:45. > :10:50.the highest placed. Mary is in tenth place. Piggy French and

:10:50. > :10:55.Jakata are one place behind. It was not one of William Fox-Pitt's

:10:55. > :11:00.better days. Cool Mountain made a few errors and finished on 42.7.

:11:00. > :11:08.That left him in 17th place. Not a day to remember either for Nicola

:11:08. > :11:11.Wilson. 52.7 was the best she could do for 39th place.

:11:11. > :11:15.Great Britain are well in contention and currently lie in

:11:15. > :11:22.second place behind Germany with Italy in third.

:11:22. > :11:30.The host nation are dominating the top of the individual standings,

:11:30. > :11:33.with Ingrid Klimke at the top. Now it is time for the cross-country

:11:33. > :11:39.phase. Tina has been out on the course.

:11:39. > :11:44.are at fence 13, 14 and 15. The horses have got their feet wet at

:11:44. > :11:51.fence five. Here, at the second water complex, we have a

:11:51. > :11:55.combination offences over a big log, a big drop into the water. The

:11:55. > :12:00.water is not that deep. The main problem that I feel for the horses

:12:00. > :12:05.here is that you need to get a clean jump up this not very defined

:12:05. > :12:08.bank because they need to jump up here to jump this narrow fence. If

:12:08. > :12:12.they don't get their striding right and they land at the edge of the

:12:12. > :12:17.bank, there is not enough room to put a stride in. So it could cause

:12:17. > :12:23.a problem. There is an option of jumping two further fences around

:12:23. > :12:27.there, over a smaller jump, across the water, up a relatively small

:12:27. > :12:33.step, one stride, over the same question. It is a bit longer, but I

:12:33. > :12:36.feel it is a lot safer than taking the chance of this area here that

:12:36. > :12:43.might cause a problem. We have had a long fast gallop around the edge

:12:43. > :12:47.of this field to then be faced here with 19, 20 and 21, up this short,

:12:47. > :12:51.steep slope they have to get the horses together to jump this narrow

:12:51. > :12:57.fence at the top of the slow. This is what they are going to be

:12:57. > :13:01.surprised with at point of take-off. As the horses land over this fence,

:13:01. > :13:05.depending on how shocked they are, they could leave their hind legs on

:13:05. > :13:15.it, prop the riders forward. They will have to sit up really quickly

:13:15. > :13:17.

:13:17. > :13:24.to go across this water and ride them really positively towards the

:13:24. > :13:28.Bees Fence. They then have to cross the field to these two angled logs.

:13:28. > :13:33.Without the water here, it would be easy. The deep water may cause the

:13:33. > :13:37.horses to shorten their stride and not get the distance across there.

:13:37. > :13:40.So positive riding is necessary here. We are here at fence 27. We

:13:40. > :13:44.are getting towards the end of the course. It is the third last. The

:13:44. > :13:47.horses might be getting tired. They will be confronted with this

:13:47. > :13:53.massive ditch. It will take a huge amount of effort to get over this

:13:54. > :13:58.fence. As the horses throw in a big fast jump over this fence, the main

:13:58. > :14:03.problem with going the quick route is to gain your control and

:14:03. > :14:08.accuracy to jump this narrow, wide corner on a related distance and

:14:08. > :14:12.then have the accuracy to jump C which would be so easy to run out.

:14:12. > :14:18.There is a slower alternative by jumping that fence there, round the

:14:18. > :14:22.trees to jump a much easier corner, round the bend to jump the same

:14:22. > :14:25.sort of question. I don't think the long route here is going to take

:14:25. > :14:35.that much longer towards the end of the course. It depends on what sort

:14:35. > :14:40.

:14:40. > :14:45.of ride and how the horses are your course Walker. What do you

:14:45. > :14:49.make of it so far? I think Mark Phillips has built a true

:14:49. > :14:54.championship course. Whether it is as technically challenging as we

:14:54. > :14:56.have seen in the past, it might lead riders into a false sense of

:14:57. > :15:00.security and mistakes could be made when they are going for their time

:15:00. > :15:05.at the end of the course. haven't got much time to get to the

:15:05. > :15:08.commentary box, see you in a bit. Let's see what happens in the cross

:15:08. > :15:17.country with Tina, when she arrives in the commentary box, and Mike

:15:17. > :15:24.Tucker. A lot of galloping. 29 fences. Some big jumping fences.

:15:25. > :15:33.The first water coming at fence four. Two corners, with an accuracy

:15:33. > :15:41.test. A way over summer my senses in 14 and 15. Two Rhodes, the one

:15:41. > :15:46.down the left is quite risky. Big imposing fences. A few little

:15:46. > :15:56.pimples and then onto the next water. That is the two and gold

:15:56. > :15:58.

:15:58. > :16:03.locks, moving two strides. Then galloping away over the Rolex Turn.

:16:03. > :16:13.The two last logs. Just make sure they don't gallop home too fast to

:16:13. > :16:33.

:16:33. > :16:38.morning, as you can see. A lot of heavy rain overnight. I think now

:16:38. > :16:48.it's Stanislaus does a quiz. The French squad, in that the Europeans

:16:48. > :17:08.

:17:08. > :17:13.are a few years ago. -- Stanislaus They are jumping pretty easily.

:17:13. > :17:22.They are jumping very well. The two corners asking similar, but

:17:22. > :17:27.different questions. Very easy to run out. The first important rider

:17:27. > :17:37.for Great Britain. It is Nicola Wilson on the fabulous Opposition

:17:37. > :17:45.

:17:45. > :17:51.Buzz. She really needs a good time Kyle. The first Iris rider.

:17:51. > :17:57.looks like he changed his mind going through the corner. A nasty

:17:57. > :18:03.trip. Luckily, he was well in the saddle and the horse picked up

:18:03. > :18:13.speed up to sort him out. We are now watching pictures of the German

:18:13. > :18:16.

:18:16. > :18:23.first team rider. The very experienced Andreas Dibowski. He's

:18:23. > :18:28.chosen to ride FRH Fantasia. He wasn't a team member when Germany

:18:28. > :18:34.won gold in 2006. But he's a key member of the team. Germany, with a

:18:34. > :18:44.very impressive 23 point lead over Britain. 18 score of 98 point seven.

:18:44. > :18:58.

:18:58. > :19:03.is very quick and he's on the good Hardly noticed that bit of bank.

:19:03. > :19:07.They want the horses to jump on top of it. Very quick through that Park.

:19:07. > :19:13.Now the galloping stretched through the wood. 14 years old, now. But

:19:13. > :19:18.still, fingers crossed, as we now join Mark Kyle with his new horse,

:19:18. > :19:24.Coolio. That nasty moment in the second quarter. He looks to have

:19:24. > :19:31.recovered. Now looking very positive on this interesting loop.

:19:31. > :19:35.The third and final water. Two inches deeper. Coming up to what we

:19:35. > :19:42.thought was one of the most difficult fences on the course?

:19:42. > :19:46.it has a very big kitchen front of it. -- a big ditch in front of it.

:19:46. > :19:53.They are just getting a little bit tired towards the end of the course.

:19:53. > :19:57.They don't give the corner a lot of height. 40 seconds to get home.

:19:57. > :20:02.Mark is in the driving seat. He's looked at his watch. They know

:20:02. > :20:05.where they need to be able stop that interesting, that is going to

:20:05. > :20:15.be the first inside the time for Ireland. Nicola Wilson and

:20:15. > :20:25.

:20:25. > :20:35.didn't even notice it. He has complete trust in Nicola, and he

:20:35. > :20:37.

:20:37. > :20:47.wastes no time. This is Andreas Dibowski for Germany. Its ridden

:20:47. > :20:58.

:20:58. > :21:08.into the course. Nicola Wilson, 3D and gold locks. The horses looking

:21:08. > :21:13.

:21:13. > :21:22.as good as ever. -- through the and Probably the most experienced of

:21:22. > :21:27.all the German riders. Confirmation that Mark Kyle is the first one

:21:27. > :21:35.inside the time. He stays on his dressage. 60.4. We know that the

:21:35. > :21:41.course is very durable within that time. 10.05 is the optimal time.

:21:41. > :21:48.Nicola Wilson is virtually home. He's pulling and she's got a

:21:48. > :21:55.difficult angle. Well recovered. Just needs to set him up for a very

:21:55. > :21:59.narrow triple brush. She's going to stay on her dressage. Well, this is

:21:59. > :22:03.a fabulous round. He absolutely flew through that. Luckily, that

:22:03. > :22:08.corner is not that wide. She was able to pull him around. He

:22:08. > :22:14.listened to her. He's looking a bit strong. She doesn't want to be

:22:14. > :22:22.making silly mistakes, so close to the end. She knows she is well on

:22:22. > :22:26.the time. A fabulous round. She will be a happy girl again. She's

:22:26. > :22:36.done the job for the team. certainly has. A great round as an

:22:36. > :22:50.

:22:50. > :23:00.Now based in Germany. Her sister Linda is one of the great riders

:23:00. > :23:04.for Sweden that has helped Sweden to those titles. She's riding Vira.

:23:04. > :23:10.As you can say, a big crowd. They've had a damp run to get here

:23:10. > :23:13.this morning. Thunder, lightning. We had it all last night. It

:23:13. > :23:17.doesn't seem to have made any difference to be going. It's

:23:17. > :23:20.amazing, I was down here a few years ago and it didn't stop

:23:21. > :23:26.raining for about three days. We were wondering if the competition

:23:26. > :23:30.was even going to be held. I think the ground will stay consistent for

:23:30. > :23:40.most of the day. That is such a help for the later riders that are

:23:40. > :23:44.coming. Andreas Dibowski, FRH Fantasia, needs to get Germany off

:23:44. > :23:51.to a start if they are going to win what would be their third European

:23:51. > :23:56.title. They won and 59 in North Yorkshire. Then in Kiev, in 1973.

:23:56. > :24:01.They have been close on a number of occasions. But they are so

:24:02. > :24:06.determined to give Britain a run for their money, after two

:24:06. > :24:12.disappointing performances. First, the Europeans in 2009. Last year

:24:12. > :24:19.they fell apart in the worlds in Kentucky. Goodness me. He just

:24:19. > :24:23.caught that. Sliding on the ground, just caught his knee. Can pretty

:24:23. > :24:30.unbalanced a horse. The speed caused him to crumple on landing.

:24:30. > :24:36.They are both fine. Look at that! This man is about to have and

:24:36. > :24:40.refusal in the Coffin, in the World Equestrian Games, when he was

:24:40. > :24:44.fancied. Frustrating start for the Germans. It happened in the last

:24:44. > :24:48.two a major championships. really couldn't expected to happen

:24:48. > :24:55.again. Reasonably straightforward fence. At every fence has to be

:24:55. > :25:01.jumped. You can't get away from that. How thrilling was that?

:25:01. > :25:07.amazing. What a fabulous horse. He just set out meaning business, he

:25:07. > :25:11.finished in the same rhythm. Just a pleasure. He looked spring-heeled,

:25:11. > :25:16.enthusiastic, like he loved every minute of that. He loves his job.

:25:16. > :25:20.He loves going across country. It's like his birthday and Christmas

:25:20. > :25:24.coming at once. The team its instructions were to go wrong. Team

:25:24. > :25:31.instructions were to be on the clock. -- don't belong there. We

:25:31. > :25:34.are going to have to set out quickly, which was a small concern.

:25:34. > :25:44.Sometimes he starts to buzz. But he was so switched-on and just

:25:44. > :26:04.

:26:04. > :26:09.quick and nimble through this part of the course. A horse way you can

:26:09. > :26:13.just press the accelerator and move on. The ground is holding up well.

:26:13. > :26:23.But the ground team is very aware that the ground does not want to

:26:23. > :26:24.

:26:24. > :26:32.impede any of the later riders. This is the last water, coming up

:26:32. > :26:37.to fence 19. A brave stride, going in. Didn't give a also a lot of

:26:37. > :26:41.chance to see what she was doing with her feet. Totally honest,

:26:41. > :26:51.totally trusting in the rider. The balls would not have seen where she

:26:51. > :26:53.

:26:53. > :26:58.was landing when she took off. of the very experienced riders. In

:26:58. > :27:08.Badminton, they finished 22nd. He's been in the sport for well over 20

:27:08. > :27:10.

:27:10. > :27:20.years. Just getting angle between these two rocks. An easy stride.

:27:20. > :27:30.

:27:30. > :27:40.in her face. There is no point as working at an indoor school the

:27:40. > :27:50.whole time. Now any arena, Fence 9 and 10. The end of the first hurdle.

:27:50. > :27:51.

:27:51. > :27:56.He's gone! Well, stood off too far. Wasn't counting the steps? They

:27:56. > :28:01.took a stride out. I would be surprised if he has hit himself.

:28:01. > :28:09.This is a big fence. But it should be four or five strides. He was a

:28:09. > :28:18.long way off the corner. They just went plummeting into the ground. He

:28:18. > :28:28.has got up. Just a bit of a face plant into the sand. He'll beat

:28:28. > :28:42.

:28:42. > :28:47.frustrated that his let his country route. She has been so quick.

:28:47. > :28:55.could be the 4th inside the time. This could be the Swedish rider,

:28:55. > :28:58.very much based in Germany. The last two fences on the course, they

:28:58. > :29:05.are numbered independently. It doesn't make a lot of difference on

:29:05. > :29:15.the bending loop to the line. Gets home. Nine seconds underneath.

:29:15. > :29:45.

:29:45. > :29:51.Jumping cleanly so far. She was course is the London Tower Bridge.

:29:52. > :29:56.Here is Piggy French, very much in Germany trying to build on her

:29:56. > :30:06.wonderful entry into the international stage. Silver

:30:06. > :30:18.

:30:18. > :30:23.phases. Jayne Doherty on The Only One. They didn't really have a

:30:23. > :30:29.stride. That was frustrating. She needs to turn left. Yes, that's

:30:29. > :30:33.fine. To come round to the other question that is coming up. The

:30:33. > :30:40.horse didn't focus on it. That was such a silly run-out to have. When

:30:40. > :30:45.they just started off looking so confidently. As easy as it may seem

:30:45. > :30:52.for us here, she has to put it behind her to make sure no more

:30:52. > :30:56.mistakes further round the course. Jakata is not that keen to go into

:30:56. > :31:02.the box. Just for a moment, I wonder whether he was going to go

:31:02. > :31:12.to the box. Away they go. 40.4, another very consistent performance

:31:12. > :31:22.

:31:22. > :31:32.in the dressage from Piggy and this the fore in 2010. It's gone from

:31:32. > :31:45.

:31:45. > :31:55.strength to strength. Can she put the water. Went a slightly longer

:31:55. > :32:04.

:32:04. > :32:14.positive to the first of this combination. Lovely stride to the

:32:14. > :32:17.

:32:17. > :32:22.might just have set her up properly for the corner. Yeah. Not entirely

:32:22. > :32:28.the most confident of jumps there. A little slap down the shoulder

:32:28. > :32:33.with the stick. She is on her way. That wasn't very comfortable for

:32:33. > :32:38.her. Just the horse misjudged the spread and dropped his hind legs

:32:38. > :32:45.but as these fences are filled in, they don't get tangled up and that

:32:45. > :32:52.will be a wake-up call, I would say. Sandra Auffarth, 24 years old,

:32:52. > :32:58.finished a very, very good second in Luhmuhlen. She won the HSB

:32:58. > :33:05.Training Bursary Award for that performance and she is away on

:33:05. > :33:09.Opgun Louvo. This is a real star in the making. She of course the

:33:09. > :33:17.second team member for Germany who were the overnight leaders. This a

:33:17. > :33:22.crucial round. She will be feeling the pressure as we have seen on

:33:22. > :33:29.screen. Her fans are watching her as we are watching Piggy French and

:33:29. > :33:32.Jakata going the slightly quicker route, wanting to keep Jakata on a

:33:32. > :33:38.straight line and there just showing the ease in what he can

:33:38. > :33:46.jump a big fence. Made that look very easy. The water is reasonably

:33:46. > :33:52.shallow, down that long side, and she is a very quick rider, cross-

:33:52. > :34:00.country. Jayne Doherty from Ireland, at what is the first crossing of

:34:00. > :34:06.the last water complex, 19 and 20, then on this figure of eight. This

:34:06. > :34:14.is Sandra Auffarth, the second team rider for Germany. She is riding

:34:14. > :34:22.Opgun Louvo and they are coming to fence four. A big chestnut looking

:34:22. > :34:25.real quality. He's got a lot of thoroughbred racing-type blood so

:34:25. > :34:34.the courage and the distance shouldn't look a problem to him.

:34:34. > :34:38.35.4 in the dressage. In fourth place. Jakata can get quite strong

:34:38. > :34:47.for Piggy French. She's just having to steady him up a little bit

:34:47. > :34:52.further away than she would ideally like to. He was very clean. Piggy

:34:52. > :34:57.having to sit back over that first element. She slipped her reins.

:34:57. > :35:02.Where she is so brilliant at cross- country, she was so quick to get

:35:02. > :35:07.back into the flow again. difference, Tina, is that Piggy and

:35:07. > :35:11.this horse look absolute class across the open country of Kentucky,

:35:11. > :35:15.but is having to work for it here. We are back with Sandra Auffarth

:35:15. > :35:20.for Germany and Opgun Louvo, the second team member, a crucial round,

:35:20. > :35:25.remember. Andreas Dibowski fell, so they are down to three. They need

:35:26. > :35:30.to get this girl round clear and fast. It is her first major

:35:30. > :35:40.championship. A big question with this large German crowd, but she is

:35:40. > :35:40.

:35:40. > :35:46.answering all of the questions so far. Jakata, Piggy French, over the

:35:46. > :35:51.fence that Andreas Dibowski fell at. As you say, this horse is pulling,

:35:51. > :35:55.Tina, you can see how Piggy is trying to set up the narrow

:35:55. > :36:03.question, now coming towards the end of the course, this is fence 23,

:36:03. > :36:10.for this - that one is out of the way. 1:58 to get home. I think she

:36:10. > :36:17.is going to get a few time faults. Sandra Auffarth for Germany. Safely

:36:17. > :36:23.through the water complex now. That comes at fence 14 and 15. Looks to

:36:23. > :36:32.have set out quite quickly. Incidentally, Jayne Doherty, for

:36:32. > :36:37.Ireland, she did finish, finished in a minute over, 11:07. Has added

:36:37. > :36:42.44.8 on cross-country so 94.8 for Ireland's Jayne Doherty. Jakata

:36:42. > :36:47.going the wrong way here at the big open ditch close home. I thought

:36:47. > :36:51.that Piggy would have to do that, even though she's down a little bit

:36:51. > :36:55.on time. I think because Jakata is pulling so much, she didn't want to

:36:55. > :37:00.risk a silly mistake there and I do believe that was certainly team

:37:00. > :37:03.orders early on. She is not going to be far over the time.

:37:03. > :37:07.interesting thing here, Tina, is with London at Greenwich on that

:37:08. > :37:11.sort of terrain, which is going to be quite tight, it will be twisty

:37:11. > :37:18.there, Jakata is definitely going to be quite difficult to ride from

:37:18. > :37:27.what we have seen this afternoon. She is home, 14 seconds over. She

:37:27. > :37:33.will be 16, 17, yeah, 17 it is. 47.2. Piggy into second place

:37:33. > :37:38.currently. Pleased with that, Tina? I feel for Piggy. For her, to do a

:37:38. > :37:41.cross-country time is so easy. She is so skilful at that part of her

:37:41. > :37:49.cross-country riding. I think she will be frustrated to be getting

:37:49. > :37:53.any time faults at all. Sandra Auffarth, a key second rider.

:37:53. > :37:59.Remember, Germany down to three. They had that very good overnight

:37:59. > :38:04.lead after dressage. This horse, when she asked it to go forward, he

:38:04. > :38:07.really does open up in her hands. She was quite chancey. You would

:38:08. > :38:11.probably like to see a little bit more control on the approach. She

:38:11. > :38:15.rather stood off it. If you were there with the training of a horse,

:38:15. > :38:20.you wouldn't want to be having that sort of stride. He just could

:38:20. > :38:25.easily have caught a knee and mistake is made. He is a lovely

:38:25. > :38:30.big-striding horse and hugely talented. Just maybe at those

:38:30. > :38:40.technical fences, you would just want a little bit more control and

:38:40. > :38:41.

:38:41. > :38:46.really does kick and the horse just bursts away. He is a big, scopey

:38:46. > :38:52.horse. Your first reaction after that?

:38:53. > :38:59.Frustrated. That would be a polite way of putting it. He jumped really

:38:59. > :39:03.well. I was like, "Gosh, not here, we don't need to do that here." He

:39:03. > :39:13.jumped generally really well. He just gets strung out. The more

:39:13. > :39:18.tired he gets, the lower he puts his head. I heard the watch beeping

:39:18. > :39:21.further and further away from where I should be. Oh God. There was that

:39:21. > :39:26.heart stopping moment in the arena. Take us through that one. I think

:39:26. > :39:29.he went on and off it, which isn't the idea. I thought we have a

:39:29. > :39:34.corner coming up, do I go the long route? There happened to be a

:39:34. > :39:37.stride there still so I was lucky. He did a few. After the arena fence

:39:37. > :39:47.he jumped on the tops and the bottom of the banks, so he was

:39:47. > :39:54.

:39:54. > :39:59.the second team rider. She might just have an odd time penalty. It

:39:59. > :40:03.is a good first team performance on a horse that looks exciting as a

:40:03. > :40:09.nine-year-old for the German sport. She is going direct. This could put

:40:09. > :40:14.her back on target. Is she going to get it? Oh brilliantly done!

:40:14. > :40:18.APPLAUSE That was really class. has put her back on top. Look at

:40:18. > :40:21.that. Almost definitely. Whether that was what she had planned to do,

:40:21. > :40:28.but she obviously felt that the horse is going to make the distance

:40:28. > :40:33.easier and it is going to be quicker for her. It is looking like

:40:33. > :40:37.she has made the right decision so far. She's got two or three seconds

:40:37. > :40:46.to stay, to go into the lead. I think she is going to go second.

:40:46. > :40:50.Yeah, she's in the end got 0.4 which puts her on 37 and Sara

:40:50. > :40:55.Algotsson-Ostholt is on 36 for Sweden. Still early days in the

:40:55. > :41:05.leaderboard. That is a very good performance for 24-year-old Sandra

:41:05. > :41:14.

:41:14. > :41:22.Artus. Again, that fence is generally riding very well for

:41:22. > :41:26.these horses. He's a sharp, nimble little horse. You seem to fly

:41:26. > :41:32.around that course today? Yes, my horse was brilliant. He is very

:41:32. > :41:38.good jumper. Yeah, he was flying all the time. You also took the

:41:38. > :41:43.short route at 27. What was the thinking there? To the beginning, I

:41:43. > :41:47.had only that way in my head and I had not the time to go the longer

:41:47. > :41:54.way, so he was brilliant, it was no problem for us.

:41:54. > :42:03.Here is Frank Osthol, his wife, Sara Algotsson-Ostholt, leading at

:42:03. > :42:08.for Sweden. Sara will have been telling her husband all about the

:42:08. > :42:15.course. Amazingly, he is riding as an individual for Germany. He has

:42:15. > :42:25.been part of the gold medal success, both in the Worlds in 2006 and then

:42:25. > :42:40.

:42:40. > :42:43.of course the Olympic gold in Hong be wanting to make sure the horse

:42:43. > :42:48.keeps straight on his line. The selectors have felt there is a

:42:48. > :42:52.reason why that they have been left out of the team. I would have

:42:52. > :42:59.thought Frank would be fairly disappointed with that decision. So

:42:59. > :43:04.it is going to be vitally important for him now to show them that they

:43:04. > :43:10.may have chosen the wrong ones and to prove to them. On this horse, it

:43:10. > :43:14.is not like he is a young horse - he is 13 years old - but there has

:43:14. > :43:20.to be some questions as to why they were left out of the German team

:43:20. > :43:25.this year. Here is a lady who will be part of the British team in

:43:25. > :43:29.years to come - Laura Collett. A very cool, young lady, this one.

:43:29. > :43:37.She has won more medals in the juniors than anyone else. She has

:43:37. > :43:47.been a European young rider champion. What can she do here at

:43:47. > :43:51.

:43:51. > :43:56.her first senior performance? Dirk Schrade, so helped by Betina Hoy.

:43:56. > :44:00.Taking that long route, only three have gone direct there. Sandra

:44:00. > :44:05.Auffarth under pressure rode it probably the best of all, actually.

:44:05. > :44:09.So, mixed messages cominging back from the German squad -- coming

:44:10. > :44:13.back from the German squad at the moment? This competition is full of

:44:13. > :44:17.surprises. To be honest, it is what you expect when cou come here and

:44:17. > :44:22.it adds -- you come here and it adds to the excitement. We are

:44:22. > :44:29.getting half-way through the day now. Just wanting to respect the

:44:29. > :44:36.last - got a little bit close to that. 15 seconds over the time.

:44:36. > :44:46.time faults to add. So Dirk Schrade, 42.7. Dirk Schrade, very good

:44:46. > :44:55.

:44:55. > :45:01.dressage, eighth overnight. Goes The British individual. Having to

:45:01. > :45:07.work quite hard through that water. It does come up quite early. There

:45:07. > :45:11.has been a big build up for her coming here. She is young, but she

:45:11. > :45:16.has had the experience. People have been expecting great things from

:45:16. > :45:26.her. Look at that. Isn't that a great sight? I wonder whether they

:45:26. > :45:34.

:45:34. > :45:43.will be here. But back with Laura. the favoured option. A nice, level

:45:43. > :45:47.distance. Oh! She's had a run-out. Really, that was very frustrating.

:45:47. > :45:54.Most riders were thinking of going for the five across there. You'd

:45:54. > :45:59.have to say, on initial thoughts, it was a little bit four and a half.

:45:59. > :46:05.Just not working together. She lost concentration and she will be

:46:05. > :46:10.totally gutted about that. Here is a man that could do it today,

:46:10. > :46:13.change the leaderboard. He's chasing to do the top of the

:46:14. > :46:23.leaderboard at the moment. Some of the dressage leaders to come later,

:46:24. > :46:24.

:46:24. > :46:34.no more so than Ingrid Klimke. His wife, Sarah, is leading on 36. But

:46:34. > :46:35.

:46:35. > :46:39.then it is Germany's second and third. Dirk Schrade is third.

:46:39. > :46:44.was lucky, he went the right side of it so it will not be any penalty.

:46:44. > :46:53.A good decision. Now he's going to be over, but it's only going to be

:46:53. > :47:03.a whisker. Very expensive on this part of the scoreboard. Mum it's

:47:03. > :47:04.

:47:04. > :47:14.of help from Frank. He's really driving down the finish. He is

:47:14. > :47:14.

:47:14. > :47:24.pleased. 15 seconds over the time. Six time faults to land for Frank

:47:24. > :47:31.

:47:31. > :47:35.Osthol. He goes to 40. He moves That is her second refusal, three

:47:35. > :47:40.on the course and I'm afraid she would have to walk home. Now, where

:47:40. > :47:47.is she going? I imagine she will be going over to the other side. Up

:47:47. > :47:56.the steps. Things are not going her way now. She's just going to have

:47:56. > :48:04.to sit down and get on with it. Really give him a kick. Susanna

:48:04. > :48:09.Bordone, for Italy, an important round with Carrera, a very

:48:09. > :48:14.experienced horse. She was here in June. She had a huge chunk taken

:48:14. > :48:19.out of her face by a horse that literally bit her. She had an

:48:19. > :48:29.operation, but she's determined to ride here. She's a two or three

:48:29. > :48:49.

:48:49. > :48:55.riders with the elimination of the cross country by Andreas Dibowski.

:48:55. > :49:04.We've just heard that Laura Collett had a third refusal, so she is

:49:04. > :49:11.eliminated from the competition. Little Carrera, pulling pretty hard.

:49:11. > :49:15.She's run out! Not for the first time. Just glanced off. She will be

:49:15. > :49:19.disappointed with that. That is going to give the Italians that

:49:19. > :49:28.little bit more penalty, a little bit more difficult to qualify. She

:49:28. > :49:32.If you don't mind what telling us, what happened? He was switched off

:49:32. > :49:36.from the start. He's normally a good cross country course. His mind

:49:36. > :49:41.was elsewhere. The first problem came at the corner, in the arena.

:49:41. > :49:46.He never locked on. He was the same the whole way round. It made it

:49:46. > :49:51.quite difficult. Can you find a reason why? Not right now. We are

:49:51. > :49:55.taking home and test his blood and stuff, see how he is. But he seems

:49:55. > :50:00.all righted himself. Whether his mind was on the crowd or what, but

:50:00. > :50:10.he did Badminton and he was fine. It could be the ground, it could be

:50:10. > :50:16.

:50:16. > :50:26.a number of things. We'll wait and France. Tomatina surely, riding

:50:26. > :50:44.

:50:45. > :50:54.Ocarina de Chanois is. -- Tomatina the Coffin. Right at the end. They

:50:55. > :50:55.

:50:55. > :51:02.jump at the very well. Carrera had that refusal. France are now trying

:51:02. > :51:06.to qualify for London. Their last Olympics was disaster. They only

:51:06. > :51:11.ran two, in the end, in the country. It will be interesting how strong

:51:11. > :51:21.it gets as it goes around the course. A big, powerful jumbo. He's

:51:21. > :51:24.

:51:24. > :51:30.a very stylish jockey. Looks very slowing out in front of the fence,

:51:30. > :51:35.just to prepare the horse. Great Britain's third team rider, waiting

:51:35. > :51:41.in the wings. It is Mary King on Imperial Cavalier. The horse which

:51:41. > :51:45.has been so much part of her great success in recent times. Third at

:51:45. > :51:55.Badminton the last time, they went on to win one and two in Kentucky

:51:55. > :52:03.

:52:03. > :52:07.as well. Back with the Frenchman, soft did, round feel on top of the

:52:07. > :52:14.loch. The horses can just slither over it. He's certainly got his

:52:14. > :52:22.foot down, going for the time. Did get quite close, not that Sharpe

:52:22. > :52:32.getting his front legs out of the way. He's looking secure. Making it

:52:32. > :52:32.

:52:32. > :52:38.very clear where the horse has got to go. Mary King, what a record

:52:38. > :52:48.she's got. Four-time Olympian. Clean round, she doesn't get a good

:52:48. > :52:57.

:52:57. > :53:07.got to do, such a confident horse. He can move and gallop, he's got a

:53:07. > :53:22.

:53:22. > :53:30.fantastic job. Confident over the round to the big Rolex Turn. The

:53:30. > :53:35.big ditch towards the drop. Only three have gone the direct route. I

:53:35. > :53:42.think he's got plenty of time to get home. He could bring joy to

:53:42. > :53:48.France, has effectively their second team member, with Pascal

:53:48. > :53:58.Leroy going out after a fall. course to hold together, which he

:53:58. > :54:02.

:54:02. > :54:12.did. Got to sit up quickly. -- a more time than you need to. I think

:54:12. > :54:22.

:54:22. > :54:29.he'll do it. Mary King, Imperial positive through the first part.

:54:29. > :54:39.All she's having to do is ride him through it. Really driving to the

:54:39. > :54:39.

:54:39. > :54:44.finish. So, he stays on his score. Donatien Schauly for France. So, he

:54:44. > :54:54.moves ahead of Piggy French. He moved into 5th, Piggy French was

:54:54. > :54:56.

:54:56. > :55:06.goatee here a lot more about for France, Donatien Schauly. -- we had

:55:06. > :55:12.

:55:12. > :55:21.right, but she kept at hand on. This shortens him and gets his

:55:21. > :55:25.attention. Another experienced piece of riding. Mary King, 50 last

:55:25. > :55:30.year. As keen and hungry as ever. She's got a very talented young

:55:30. > :55:36.daughter, already on her way internationally. Safely over fence

:55:36. > :55:45.11. Back into the country. Ingrid Klimke for Germany. The third team

:55:45. > :55:53.member. Here is a crucial run-out. A FRH Butts Abraxxas, the lead

:55:53. > :55:56.after dressage. Germany are down to three team members. A clean round,

:55:56. > :56:01.crucial for Germany if they are going to maintain their lead and

:56:01. > :56:06.win the European team title here. This horse has such an amazing

:56:06. > :56:12.temperament. Stood perfectly still in the start box. Most horses would

:56:12. > :56:16.be jumping up and down. Ingrid, giving him a pat over the first

:56:16. > :56:21.fence, getting the confidence. It showed in the dressage, the

:56:21. > :56:31.beautiful control and has moved the test was. What a fabulous brain

:56:31. > :56:31.

:56:31. > :56:37.this horse has got. The rain has eased off. Here comes Mary King,

:56:37. > :56:44.Imperial Cavalier. She's come down the left route... The horse just

:56:44. > :56:49.tripped up on the step. Mary King has gone, Britain are down to three.

:56:49. > :56:59.Didn't dredge the bank at all. Didn't really have a stride. Nasty

:56:59. > :57:01.

:57:01. > :57:06.fall. Nearly getting her foot caught. The airbag has blown up, it

:57:06. > :57:09.can get very tight. I'm sure she's OK. She's being held to get her

:57:09. > :57:17.back protector off. It's there to protect you if you have a fall like

:57:18. > :57:22.that. The 30th running of the championships, full of drama. Now

:57:22. > :57:29.we are back, waiting for Ingrid Klimke to come through to fence

:57:29. > :57:34.four. Here she comes with Butts Abraxxas. Ingrid Klimke, you might

:57:34. > :57:40.remember that she had a fall and made herself a bit of a leg injury.

:57:40. > :57:46.But she's come back. Quickly through four and five. This is the

:57:46. > :57:56.way she rides cross country, she rides right on the limit. Good to

:57:56. > :58:01.

:58:01. > :58:10.say, Mary King getting at. -- big crowd and she's really going

:58:10. > :58:15.for it. She's absolutely making the horse's mind up. Ridden very well.

:58:15. > :58:21.Just keeping a real flow. Took a stride out there. The crowd are

:58:21. > :58:26.really behind her. Clapping and cheering from everybody, really

:58:26. > :58:36.thrilled to see her going so well. She's in the lead. There's always

:58:36. > :58:38.

:58:38. > :58:48.pressure on the leader. But anybody situation. Well, Ingrid Klimke

:58:48. > :58:59.

:58:59. > :59:05.getting so close. -- team the behind them after the dressage.

:59:05. > :59:10.Andreas Dibowski fell out. Piggy French, Nicola Wilson, they went

:59:10. > :59:15.clear and fast for Britain. That looked to put the advantage back

:59:15. > :59:22.for Britain. You have to say, with Ingrid Klimke on the course, it is

:59:22. > :59:27.going back Germany's wave. But this lady has to stay clear. The crowd

:59:28. > :59:34.have really come out on the course now. That is the crowd towards the

:59:34. > :59:44.end, over that big Rolex Turn at fence 27. Ingrid goes to the big

:59:44. > :59:49.

:59:49. > :59:57.silver birch. The silver birch Oxer, coming at 13. It is the fence that

:59:57. > :00:01.has caused problems a little bit. Ingrid rode that really well. It's

:00:01. > :00:04.easy to come around the corner, thinking about the clock and not

:00:04. > :00:09.presenting to that relatively straightforward, but clearly big

:00:09. > :00:15.fence. I should think that she has probably seen some of the falls

:00:15. > :00:20.earlier on. She's learning, seeing from those mistakes. A good looks

:00:20. > :00:23.like she is chattering away to herself. -- ING grip. Making sure

:00:23. > :00:33.she's keeping up to the instructions she wants to give to

:00:33. > :00:36.

:00:36. > :00:41.Everything is going her way so far. Ingrid, who was in the team when it

:00:41. > :00:49.all went so horribly wrong for the Germans - in fact she didn't

:00:49. > :00:54.compete on this horse, FRH Butts Abraxxas. But on her home ground

:00:54. > :01:00.she has set her heart on putting the record straight. Still leading

:01:00. > :01:03.at the moment, individually, Sara Algotsson-Ostholt, on a score of 36.

:01:03. > :01:13.This lady could change all of that and put Germany perhaps in the box

:01:13. > :01:17.

:01:17. > :01:22.Ingrid Klimke just has to respect that bend - there is a big log pile,

:01:22. > :01:27.table, as you come round the corner. You could easily make a mistake

:01:27. > :01:34.there. Back into the darkness of the wood. Getting cut-up on the

:01:34. > :01:38.approach. Very smooth. She's driving away. She would be OK on

:01:38. > :01:48.the time now. It will be interesting to see what team orders

:01:48. > :01:52.

:01:52. > :02:02.Surely she will go round. We will see. Here she comes. This is the

:02:02. > :02:06.Rolex Turn at 27. She is going straight. Oh! Easy! Is this the

:02:06. > :02:10.European Champion in waiting? at Ingrid's face, she is so pleased

:02:10. > :02:16.with that performance. That was - she knew that was a massive risk

:02:16. > :02:21.and it has paid off for her. Shh could just be her Championship.

:02:21. > :02:27.Going straight there does put her straight back in line for going

:02:27. > :02:35.inside the time. Her dressage score was a brilliant performance. She is

:02:35. > :02:40.going to do it, she is going to be three seconds inside the time. She

:02:40. > :02:45.goes a little more than a fence ahead of Sara Algotsson-Ostholt.

:02:45. > :02:50.Germany's Ingrid Klimke, brilliant round, followed up from the

:02:50. > :02:55.dressage yesterday, takes the lead individually and now will be the

:02:55. > :03:05.overnight leader. There is her husband and daughter alongside.

:03:05. > :03:26.

:03:26. > :03:36.They will be thrilled. Here is that place looks very good for Germany.

:03:36. > :03:37.

:03:37. > :03:47.This the last of the team rounds now for Sweden, it is Malin

:03:47. > :04:04.

:04:04. > :04:10.finished 14th in Kentucky after going very well in the dressage.

:04:10. > :04:17.Got a bit tired towards the end. But went very impressively and

:04:17. > :04:24.hadn't done much since Stefano's wife has been quite ill. Luckily,

:04:24. > :04:28.she is much, much better and he has been able to put the work into this

:04:28. > :04:33.horse. He is setting out very positively.

:04:33. > :04:40.Fantastic stuff. Take us through beginning felt him really going and

:04:40. > :04:45.the ground is quite deep, it takes the horse to keep cantering. He is

:04:45. > :04:49.a small horse. I felt he was like a little racehorse. Especially in the

:04:49. > :04:54.beginning on the trees. Then he saw the boat and was a bit spooky. I

:04:54. > :05:00.thought we have to be encouraged. Then the rest went fluently, fun

:05:00. > :05:06.and I felt him brilliantly jumping and bold and I knew that I was

:05:06. > :05:11.having quite a good time. I wanted to risk, I wanted to ride the last

:05:11. > :05:19.complex direct. So I was lucky to try it and it went so much fun, so

:05:19. > :05:23.well. So this now is Malin Petersen -

:05:23. > :05:26.this combination went well two years ago, finished 12th

:05:26. > :05:34.individually. They are based in Germany, they do a lot of their

:05:34. > :05:41.work there. So to get their last rider home clear and fast,

:05:41. > :05:50.certainly does put them in touch of a London qualification for next

:05:50. > :06:00.year's Olympics. Back with the key round for Italy - really positive

:06:00. > :06:05.

:06:05. > :06:09.here, too positive? Oh! Stefano him. APPLAUSE So clever over that

:06:09. > :06:14.fence. Just for a moment, I was wondering whether he had just

:06:14. > :06:19.locked on to the corner. Hopefully, now they have got out of the arena,

:06:19. > :06:23.they can settle into more of a rhythm. It looked a little fast and

:06:23. > :06:33.furious earlier on. Malin Petersen is at the Rolex Turn, going the

:06:33. > :06:35.

:06:35. > :06:38.wrong way. Interesting to see this horse's time. Piccadilly Z - he is

:06:38. > :06:44.from one of the world's top studs. She is going to be over the time.

:06:44. > :06:53.This is a good team performance. Malin, very much focused for the

:06:53. > :06:58.last two jumping efforts - 40 jumping efforts on the course.

:06:58. > :07:03.10:05 the time allowed. She is over that. Stands off that last. It will

:07:03. > :07:13.be so disappointing to fall at these last two logs - she is over

:07:13. > :07:13.

:07:13. > :07:23.both of them. APPLAUSE There will be 26 or 27 seconds over - 27 it is.

:07:23. > :07:28.63:1 it is for Sweden's Malin Petersen. Karin Donckers waits at

:07:28. > :07:36.the start for Belgium. A lady who has got probably more fourth

:07:36. > :07:41.finishes just out of medals than probably anyone else in the world.

:07:41. > :07:48.the 11-year-old stallion nearly parted company with Karin at the

:07:48. > :07:53.firs. Well! That was a massive -- the first? Well! That was a massive

:07:53. > :07:58.wake-up call. There is lazy and having a refusal at the first fence.

:07:58. > :08:08.That will definitely get her blood up to really wake up and get on

:08:08. > :08:13.

:08:13. > :08:21.14, now 15. Trying to be careful not to pop up the step and not trip

:08:21. > :08:27.up that. That's such a safer route going down that line. When you have

:08:27. > :08:31.got a horse like this, he will be able to gallop and make up those

:08:31. > :08:37.few seconds that it takes to go down that line. He is sitting back,

:08:37. > :08:41.hasn't got time to shorten his rein,. The horse is sharp. Really

:08:41. > :08:45.neat there. That is what you want from an event horse, to be able to

:08:46. > :08:51.get his knees out of the way. is a very different picture to what

:08:51. > :09:01.was seen in Kentucky, that is for sure. Definitely got his

:09:01. > :09:14.

:09:14. > :09:18.would seem to have got the alarm bells over and done with. APPLAUSE

:09:18. > :09:25.Stefano Brecciaroli - this horse looks so much neater and lighter on

:09:25. > :09:29.his feet. The stallion isn't really built for galloping. He does the

:09:29. > :09:39.jumping job, but this horse is so quick and athletic. Everything

:09:39. > :09:42.about him is what you are looking for. That won't be going through

:09:42. > :09:46.his mind at the moment, he will be concentrating and putting that

:09:46. > :09:55.horse in the right position to do his job. That means just taking a

:09:55. > :10:00.bit of pace away, get his line and then be positive. He was there! No

:10:00. > :10:10.question - two strides. Now, he can press the accelerator to go round

:10:10. > :10:17.

:10:17. > :10:21.she had to take a pull. The horse was very genuine to her there.

:10:21. > :10:24.Shortened up and jumped it perfectly well in the end. That is

:10:24. > :10:28.where genuine horses are so important. If they are not, they

:10:28. > :10:38.can stop when she makes an adjustment like that. Very, very

:10:38. > :10:38.

:10:38. > :10:44.experienced. They know each other Apollo van de Wendi Kurt Hoeve is

:10:44. > :10:50.coming to the Rolex Turn. An important round for Italy. They

:10:50. > :10:54.remember won silver two years ago. I don't think he is riding the

:10:54. > :10:58.tidiest finish that you might see at Cheltenham. A pat down the neck.

:10:58. > :11:04.This has been a performance that has been half expected because he's

:11:04. > :11:14.a horse that is very, very much thought of. Coming to the last two

:11:14. > :11:15.

:11:15. > :11:25.fences. He's got time penalties. He was in sixth place. He's got 23

:11:25. > :11:25.

:11:25. > :11:34.time penalties, 0.4 for every one of those, so 9:02 time penalties,

:11:34. > :11:39.he goes just ahead of Donatien Schauly for France. Here is Nicolas

:11:39. > :11:44.Touzaint on the course. This is a crucial round for France. Twice

:11:44. > :11:50.European Champions away. Neptune de Sartene, he is a young horse that

:11:50. > :11:55.he has produced very carefully. His old horses are certainly past their

:11:55. > :12:05.best. This is the horse that he's putting his life on for the future.

:12:05. > :12:07.

:12:07. > :12:15.31 years old, the Frenchman, Nicolas Touzaint. Oh! That looks

:12:16. > :12:21.like Karin Donckers. Yes, it is. It is Karin Donckers. Oh! Lamicell

:12:21. > :12:27.Charizard. Just had a horrible fall into the water. Thank goodness they

:12:27. > :12:32.are both up. He has water down his ears - poor boy. May see what

:12:32. > :12:36.happened there. That was a real shame. At least they are walking

:12:36. > :12:46.out all in one piece. The poor horse will hate having that water

:12:46. > :12:53.

:12:53. > :13:00.Sartene from France. APPLAUSE France trying to push Britain right

:13:00. > :13:03.to the line now. Germany, France, Britain - France have been second

:13:03. > :13:13.in a European Championships seven times. They have never won the

:13:13. > :13:13.

:13:13. > :13:19.title. At the moment, it's looking very much Germany's way. Now, for

:13:19. > :13:29.Ireland, three left to go - it is Sam Watson away. Sam Watson and his

:13:29. > :13:39.

:13:39. > :13:44.very good horse - Horseware Bushman. He likes to wave his elbows around

:13:44. > :13:49.a bit, pushes his horse through. He is usually very quick across the

:13:49. > :13:56.country. He doesn't waste any time at all. This horse looks like he

:13:56. > :14:02.gallops very easily within himself. Horseware Bushman - Sam Watson

:14:02. > :14:07.making him get on and get across that water, which he does. APPLAUSE

:14:07. > :14:12.Following in the footsteps of his father John Watson who won a silver

:14:13. > :14:22.medal in the Worlds in 1978. This is his son who could well equal if

:14:23. > :14:33.

:14:33. > :14:41.This is a round that could put France very much in contention for

:14:41. > :14:50.medals in the team. It looks like it's between France, Germany and

:14:50. > :14:57.Britain. Britain have the advantage in the gold medal position. Sam

:14:57. > :15:05.Watson, worth Horseware Bushman, in the ring. A good flow around there.

:15:05. > :15:11.The horse is locked on, focused. Decided to go for the five strides.

:15:11. > :15:15.Looking at the safe options. He's looking revved up, he's looking

:15:15. > :15:25.like he's going to have a real crack at the time. He's had a

:15:25. > :15:34.

:15:34. > :15:38.mind up. No doubt in his mind about putting that extra stride in that

:15:38. > :15:42.long distance across the water. William Fox-Pitt, the last for

:15:42. > :15:48.Britain. There he is. Some anxious moments for the British team. Mary

:15:48. > :15:52.King, you may remember, fell at fence 14 and 15, into the water.

:15:52. > :16:02.This manner, it all depends on him what colour the metal is going to

:16:02. > :16:15.

:16:15. > :16:20.title in Kentucky, the last man at his best. A run-out... In fact,

:16:20. > :16:28.it's a refusal for Sam Watson. he was being quite punchy with a

:16:28. > :16:35.horse. He felt it really backing off. Then a lovely clean jumper. He

:16:35. > :16:40.will be so disappointed. What caused that? It's not a course that

:16:40. > :16:50.normally stops and cross-country. He did have penalties when he

:16:50. > :17:03.

:17:03. > :17:13.represented Ireland. Here is could go forth on the edge of the

:17:13. > :17:20.

:17:20. > :17:26.medals. Ingrid Klimke is leading. 30 years her score. Sandra Auffarth

:17:26. > :17:36.for Germany is third. He could change this, he can get in touching

:17:36. > :17:38.

:17:39. > :17:44.all going to be counted. So tight at the top. Each penalty is so

:17:44. > :17:47.expensive, for Sinn -- pushing you further away from the individual

:17:47. > :17:51.medals. Ingrid will be thrilled because it gives her a little bit

:17:51. > :17:56.more transfer when it comes to the show jumping on the final day. The

:17:56. > :18:06.clock is ticking already. He has four penalties, one fence for

:18:06. > :18:17.

:18:17. > :18:27.has 9.2 time penalties given. 47.1. He is 0.1 ahead of Piggy French.

:18:27. > :18:27.

:18:27. > :18:37.Just gone ahead. That puts Nicholas in eight. Piggy is down to 9th. Not

:18:37. > :18:39.

:18:39. > :18:44.looking good for Britain. What can used to this sort of pressure in

:18:44. > :18:48.the past. It's not a pressure that he would have chosen, obviously.

:18:48. > :18:55.The fall of Mary King, that has changed the whole team outlook.

:18:55. > :19:01.William has got to go out and be positive. Cool Mountain has proved,

:19:01. > :19:08.and William has as well, that they are world class. Back in the ring

:19:08. > :19:12.for this last drama, over nine. Now 10. He cannot afford any time

:19:12. > :19:19.faults, either. William is so smooth and cross-country. He

:19:19. > :19:26.doesn't waste any time. Went for the stride, good decision. There is

:19:26. > :19:33.the man that beat him in Kentucky. Michael Jung. The reigning world

:19:33. > :19:37.champion. Can he win a world and European title? 33.3 as his score.

:19:37. > :19:42.He was second after dressage, behind Ingrid Klimke. He cannot

:19:42. > :19:50.lead, but he could be a fence behind. Ingrid is not known for her

:19:50. > :19:59.skills in show jumping. Michael Jung, away. Set up, William! Oh, my

:19:59. > :20:05.goodness, Cool Mountain. He's going to have to grab hold of the reins.

:20:05. > :20:10.Just hope that he forgets about the water in his ears and trust jumps

:20:11. > :20:14.the fences ahead of him. So, they are penalty-free. I thought they

:20:14. > :20:18.were going down the left-hand side? They were, whether he was thinking

:20:18. > :20:23.of moving down the left-hand side, he was talking about adoption. I

:20:23. > :20:27.mean, my goodness, William was sitting up. The horse was ploughing

:20:27. > :20:33.its head through the water. An horrendous feeling. But he's got

:20:33. > :20:37.his brains back. Luckily, he hasn't presented that option on the left-

:20:38. > :20:42.hand side. Absolutely no way would you jump that from there. I'm not

:20:42. > :20:52.sure what happened. I wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't lost a shoe.

:20:52. > :20:55.

:20:55. > :21:05.More than likely, or something. For Bushman. He's had 20 penalties, he

:21:05. > :21:07.

:21:07. > :21:14.considering this 20 penalties. would have hoped for a decent

:21:14. > :21:24.position. 50.2. But here is the cool cookie from Germany. Michael

:21:24. > :21:36.

:21:36. > :21:46.to end. Now, William Fox-Pitt. What effect has that narrow escape at

:21:46. > :21:53.

:21:53. > :22:03.horse. And it does look like he's possibly lost a shoe. That will not

:22:03. > :22:08.help going around the corners. Just looking... You've got to ride

:22:08. > :22:14.positively. You've got to put it behind you. I'm not sure, but

:22:14. > :22:17.certainly troubled the horse. The horse was quite tense in the

:22:17. > :22:27.dressage. He didn't get the performance that he was hoping for

:22:27. > :22:29.

:22:29. > :22:39.man's skill, to get the confidence back into the course. Michael Jung,

:22:39. > :22:43.

:22:43. > :22:47.the dressage as well. Both of these two horses were not relaxed as they

:22:47. > :22:57.could be. The German crowd, following him around the course.

:22:57. > :23:02.

:23:02. > :23:06.Perfect, there. Confident Pat down the neck of La Biosthetique-Sam.

:23:06. > :23:14.William Fox-Pitt, Cool Mountain. Silver medallist behind Michael

:23:14. > :23:22.Jung. A man who has won 17 gold, or two cell that the euros. If Britain

:23:22. > :23:27.are going to win a team medal, he needs to stay fast and clear.

:23:27. > :23:30.lovely shot. Now he's going to have to really kick through the woods. A

:23:30. > :23:39.thoroughbred horse, he should be able to gallop on the straight

:23:39. > :23:49.stretches. Clean and slip through the water fence. He manages to

:23:49. > :23:52.

:23:52. > :23:55.crouch right down onto the course's for the gold medal. He's gone down

:23:55. > :24:00.the right-hand side. That has to be a sensible decision, I would have

:24:00. > :24:04.thought. It has looked like that. When you are sat on a horse like

:24:04. > :24:12.this, you just take away that risk factor. You have to say, William

:24:12. > :24:19.was unlucky. Pecking in the water. The drop is so much less on this

:24:19. > :24:24.side. This is a man that has jumped into prominence, right at the top

:24:24. > :24:28.of the sport. He and his father do all of the planning and the worker.

:24:28. > :24:31.They are a real team. They are certainly giving Germany the edge.

:24:31. > :24:35.Remember, Germany were the overnight leaders after dressage.

:24:35. > :24:44.It looks like they are going to do the business. France have finished

:24:44. > :24:49.on a score of 151.1. Sweden are 173.2. William Fox-Pitt... And he's

:24:49. > :24:56.going straight! That is going to cause him problems... Is it? What a

:24:56. > :25:01.good horse! That was absolutely brilliant. He had no option but to

:25:01. > :25:05.go there. He was down on the clock. The original team plan was to go

:25:05. > :25:11.along, William changed his mind. To catch his knee on the corner, that

:25:11. > :25:19.is what they were worried about. That put him back on schedule again.

:25:19. > :25:29.So, he is going to finish on his dressage score of 42.7. He does. He

:25:29. > :25:33.

:25:33. > :25:37.goes ahead off Dirk Schrade. He goes into 5th place, behind Frank

:25:37. > :25:44.Osthol. There will be some stories to tell, surely, from William Fox-

:25:44. > :25:48.Pitt. Wow. He had his nine lives, didn't he? Actually, it doesn't

:25:48. > :25:54.look like he's lost a shoe. It will be interesting to talk to him later.

:25:54. > :26:00.Let's hope that the horse is in one piece. We get back to watching

:26:00. > :26:04.Michael Jung. If he just produces horses so well. The ownership of

:26:04. > :26:11.this horse looked under threat last winter. It looked as though Michael

:26:11. > :26:18.Jung might lose the ride on the horse. Eventually, it was sealed,

:26:18. > :26:28.with some German federation support. The ownership is now secure for

:26:28. > :26:37.this man to ride. He is class. He really is class. World champion,

:26:37. > :26:41.trying to add the Europeans to it. He took a chance, there. Didn't he?

:26:41. > :26:46.I agree! That was quite a chance. He lengthened as he went through

:26:46. > :26:49.the water. I was thinking, you're going to be getting a flyer. When

:26:49. > :26:56.horses Llandow they drop fence at that speed, there is always the

:26:56. > :26:59.risk of a peck. -- when horses land on a drop fence at that speed. You

:26:59. > :27:09.always wonder if it's necessary to take that sort of chance. He looks

:27:09. > :27:14.

:27:14. > :27:20.Klimke cannot be beaten. She's out front, individually, or 30. Michael

:27:20. > :27:25.Jung, if he goes inside the time, and he looks set for it, he would

:27:25. > :27:31.go second. Sara Algotsson-Ostholt would be third for Sweden,

:27:31. > :27:36.individually. Then it would be Sandra Auffarth. William Fox-Pitt

:27:36. > :27:42.would be 6th. Dirk Schrade are would be second -- 7th. It looks

:27:42. > :27:50.like the Germans would have the team gold medal. At the moment,

:27:50. > :27:54.after cross country. Seems to be in the bag, with show jumping to come.

:27:54. > :27:58.But they only have three riders and they have inspections and show

:27:58. > :28:04.jumping to come. I was going to say, we've got quite a way to go yet.

:28:04. > :28:10.They've got to get past these tricky few fences. Nothing is

:28:10. > :28:16.guaranteed. You cannot assume anything. It's so exciting, this

:28:16. > :28:22.cross country. Well, this really has been a tremendous day's sport.

:28:22. > :28:31.Right at the very last. Germany have won it three times. They

:28:31. > :28:39.haven't won it since. 1989, name that was when the Germans last won

:28:39. > :28:45.it. England are not looking strong for it at the moment. He's going

:28:45. > :28:50.straight. What a shot. Took a stride out. Goodness, he came in at

:28:50. > :28:57.some speed. I was wandering, William's horse got a very close to

:28:57. > :29:02.it. There is a brave man, he's looking cool and calm. He is. He's

:29:02. > :29:09.ridden with a lot of accuracy. He's taken a chance or two. Sometimes it

:29:09. > :29:12.pays off, sometimes it doesn't. Today it is definitely the Germans'

:29:12. > :29:22.a day. Despite Donatien Schauly going out, the first team member,

:29:22. > :29:24.

:29:24. > :29:34.they finish on a high. Germany will finish on a score of 100.3. A so,

:29:34. > :29:41.

:29:41. > :29:51.that is definitely Germany to the two - Sara Algotsson-Ostholt is in

:29:51. > :30:12.

:30:12. > :30:17.in case you were bored, I thought I would brighten things up! That was

:30:17. > :30:21.not my plan. What an amazing horse. He was so brave and genuine and it

:30:21. > :30:27.wasn't his fault at all, the water is one of those things that does

:30:27. > :30:34.happen. I saw Mark Kyle do it earlier on. I don't know how he

:30:34. > :30:38.stood up. He had water in his ears. We were still on the clock, I

:30:38. > :30:42.couldn't quite believe that. I kept going and he picked up. I think he

:30:42. > :30:48.cleared all the water out of his lungs a bit and got a second wind

:30:48. > :30:53.and we were flying. I said to Yogi, I prefer the direct route for him,

:30:54. > :30:58.he is very genuine on line, was I allowed to do it? He said no, of

:30:58. > :31:05.course you are, if that is what you believe. With Mary out, it was a

:31:05. > :31:09.big risk. Again, I ran too deep into that corner after the hedge.

:31:09. > :31:13.As I took off, I thought this isn't going to be good. Because he was a

:31:13. > :31:19.bit tired, he clipped it. We were facing the C element and I was

:31:19. > :31:25.thinking it is too late to pull off. I said, "You can do it" and he just

:31:25. > :31:31.had another go. How amazing was he? Michael, how pleased are you with

:31:31. > :31:35.that round? I'm very happy. It is a really good horse. A strong horse.

:31:35. > :31:43.Very flexible. From the beginning, I had a very good feeling for my

:31:43. > :31:53.horse. He jumps really well. Yeah, very fresh. I'm happy. Did you feel

:31:53. > :31:53.

:31:53. > :31:59.under any pressure after Andreas Dibowski's fall? The pressure is in

:31:59. > :32:05.every competition. We do the best we can. Yeah, I hope that it is OK.

:32:05. > :32:15.Here is the team position. Germany have got now - they have increased

:32:15. > :32:20.

:32:20. > :32:24.their lead over Great Britain. Tina has joined me to reflect on

:32:24. > :32:30.yesterday. How is Mary? I have seen Mary this morning. She is fine. She

:32:30. > :32:33.was taken to hospital to have some precautionary x-rays. No bones

:32:33. > :32:39.broken, absolutely fine. Disappointed, though, with the fall.

:32:39. > :32:42.She is looking forward to next week. What did you make of our team

:32:42. > :32:47.performance yesterday? Obviously, Great Britain were disappointing.

:32:47. > :32:50.They would like to be threatening for the gold. Things didn't go

:32:50. > :32:54.quite our way yesterday. A few time faults here and there. Obviously,

:32:54. > :32:58.Mary falling and being out of the team, so we were down to three. The

:32:58. > :33:03.Germans were on fire. Everything went well for them. Lots of

:33:03. > :33:07.pressure on William Fox-Pitt after Mary's fall? The Anchorman! It can

:33:07. > :33:11.be the best position in the world and sometimes the worst. After

:33:11. > :33:15.Mary's fall, he had to go clear and fast. A few little trips and

:33:15. > :33:18.mistakes around the cross-country, but he was magnificent. He really

:33:18. > :33:23.got Britain back in medal position. Although we are still in silver

:33:23. > :33:27.position, are we too far behind the Germans to make up the ground in

:33:27. > :33:30.the showjumping? Unfortunately, it does look like that. They are ten

:33:30. > :33:36.fences ahead of us. It will need a miracle and a disaster from the

:33:36. > :33:40.Germans for us to catch up. We have to put in good performances to

:33:40. > :33:44.secure the silver. France are only two fences behind us. So we can't

:33:44. > :33:48.relax. We have still got to keep our performances up. We have heard

:33:49. > :33:53.that four horses won't be making the line-up. Two horses weren't

:33:54. > :33:58.presented. Two others failed the inspection. Our horses are OK?

:33:58. > :34:01.horses are fine. The ground was fantastic yesterday. The other

:34:01. > :34:03.horses that weren't presented, they are minor injuries that the riders

:34:04. > :34:09.don't feel they want to present their horses for the final phase,

:34:09. > :34:13.but nothing serious. It is time to let Tina go. She will join Mike for

:34:13. > :34:21.the climax of the event - the showjumping.

:34:21. > :34:27.This is the French team member, it is Stanislas de Zuchowicz on

:34:27. > :34:37.Quirinal de la Bastide. 58.4 his current score. He is lying at the

:34:37. > :34:42.moment in 18th place. 2.8 time penalties yesterday. The French are

:34:42. > :34:47.chasing us. They have three team members to come - Pascal Leroy fell

:34:47. > :34:52.yesterday, France down to three team members, as is Britain, as is

:34:52. > :35:02.Germany. All above us. But Stanislas de Zuchowicz on 58.4.

:35:02. > :35:05.

:35:05. > :35:13.This is the battle now for the our breath. Competition further

:35:13. > :35:23.down is wide-open. This is quite a big horse to hold together. Just

:35:23. > :35:26.

:35:26. > :35:30.have to see how he's come out from the riders. Riders put enough

:35:30. > :35:35.pressure on themselves anyway to put in a faultless performance.

:35:35. > :35:40.When you know there is only three of you left, it's a lot more

:35:40. > :35:47.pressure. He was one of the few riders from France who abgcomully

:35:48. > :35:52.got round all three phases -- actually got round all three phases

:35:52. > :35:57.two years ago. Germany have made huge use of that here, they have

:35:57. > :36:04.impressed. This man very experienced. He's in the services.

:36:04. > :36:08.He is showing it. He is giving this horse a fabulous ride. He is a big,

:36:08. > :36:14.striding horse. He's giving the horse enough time to get his legs

:36:14. > :36:17.out the way and leave the fences up. He was 26 individually in Kentucky.

:36:17. > :36:24.Coming down to the last. That is a good round. APPLAUSE It is a good

:36:24. > :36:34.round. It is inside the time. Pressure on for Britain. So he goes

:36:34. > :36:35.

:36:35. > :36:39.clear - 58.4. He was the lowest of the French team members in the

:36:39. > :36:44.position of 18th. That is an important clear. There is the team

:36:44. > :36:52.position as it stands. It is really close between Britain and France.

:36:52. > :37:00.There's only two fences in it. Sweden look to be cementing their

:37:00. > :37:06.place in fourth. Not sure they will catch France. Now, wherever you are,

:37:06. > :37:13.sit tight, it's the first of the British three trying to get the

:37:13. > :37:18.silver medal. It is Nicholas Wilson, another outstanding performance --

:37:18. > :37:22.Nicola Wilson, another outstanding performance on Opposition Buzz

:37:22. > :37:32.yesterday. Lying 14th. It is a clear round for the team which is

:37:32. > :37:36.

:37:36. > :37:43.pressure before. Doesn't always necessarily mean it is any easier -

:37:43. > :37:46.I think that vertical has gone. A little bit quick over the fence.

:37:46. > :37:51.Opposition Buzz has his own style of getting over a fence and Nicola

:37:51. > :37:56.does ride him so beautifully. He's not necessarily everyone's cup of

:37:56. > :38:01.tea. They do have such a partnership. He can be a bit quick

:38:01. > :38:11.over his fences and there, she did an amazing job to shorten him up to

:38:11. > :38:13.

:38:13. > :38:19.ahead of the French and the French have had one clear round. It is

:38:19. > :38:29.upping the pressure. Really can't afford to have another one. Just

:38:29. > :38:38.

:38:38. > :38:48.got to try and steady him up. Time a little nudge. But Nicola Wilson

:38:48. > :38:49.

:38:49. > :38:55.does the job yet again. This lovely 14-year-old, home bred, he's been

:38:55. > :39:02.such a star. She joined the team to help Britain win team gold two

:39:02. > :39:06.years ago and she has done little wrong since. She goes on to 56.7.

:39:06. > :39:11.How pleased were you with that? was very pleased. Very disappointed

:39:11. > :39:15.to have a fence. It is very unlike him. He jumped a beautiful round in

:39:15. > :39:19.there. I'm thrilled to bits. I hope that one fence doesn't alter the

:39:19. > :39:22.team position. What will you be telling Piggy and William? I don't

:39:22. > :39:26.think I need to tell them anything, they are so experienced. I will be

:39:26. > :39:31.there if they want to ask a question. They are superb riders. I

:39:31. > :39:35.am sure they will do a fabulous job. Easy to put that first fence out of

:39:35. > :39:40.your mind after you have made that mistake? You have to. I thought

:39:40. > :39:45.through the treble, I thought oh gosh, come on, but no he was lovely.

:39:46. > :39:53.Thrilled with him. He has been super. Piggy coming up now. We will

:39:53. > :40:03.let you support her. Thank you. Now, Britain's Piggy French. Piggy

:40:03. > :40:04.

:40:04. > :40:10.French with Jakata. Good performance yesterday. 6.8 time

:40:10. > :40:16.penalties. He pulled very hard. She was very frustrated and is 11th on

:40:16. > :40:26.47.2. Now, of course, Britain in need of clear rounds here to keep

:40:26. > :40:36.

:40:36. > :40:43.phases. She admits she doesn't feel the nerves in this phase which I

:40:43. > :40:53.always think is amazing. It's so important to leave the fences up.

:40:53. > :40:58.

:40:58. > :41:01.They are really getting a thinking, she has a real art with

:41:01. > :41:06.these tricky types of horses. She was disappointed, she was very hard

:41:07. > :41:15.on herself yesterday to get the time faults. Oh! Just tightened up

:41:15. > :41:22.behind. Dragged his hind legs through. They are no more than one

:41:22. > :41:31.penalty ahead of France. I can hardly breathe. He has to jump the

:41:31. > :41:39.last. She does! APPLAUSE It's one to add, 51.2 for Piggy French and

:41:39. > :41:43.Jakata. Remember, second behind the great Mark Todd at Badminton. She

:41:43. > :41:51.is a real star that Britain needs to build on for London next year.

:41:51. > :41:56.My word, Luhmuhlen has been a wake- up call for the British squad.

:41:56. > :42:02.got tight in his back. Lazy behind. Piggy trying to sort him out to

:42:02. > :42:06.make sure there was no more faults still to come. Good performance by

:42:06. > :42:10.Piggy, really. One to come for Britain, of course. William Fox-

:42:10. > :42:16.Pitt. Now for France, here is a crucial round. If France are going

:42:16. > :42:19.to put the pressure on Britain for that silver - and France have

:42:20. > :42:23.finished second on seven occasions - they have never won the title. I

:42:23. > :42:27.don't think they will do today. They might get ahead of Britain. If

:42:27. > :42:32.this man jumps a clear, the pressure is on for the final riders

:42:32. > :42:42.for each of the two nations. The double European Champion, with his

:42:42. > :42:54.

:42:54. > :43:00.lovely young horse, Neptune de rounds under this sort of pressure.

:43:00. > :43:04.This horse was very impressive and a good back-up horse because he's

:43:04. > :43:11.had to sell some of his other team horses. A lot of the riders have to

:43:11. > :43:17.sell to earn a bit of money to be able to continue to compete at this

:43:17. > :43:23.level. He's been producing this horse to take over as his mainstay

:43:23. > :43:33.in the team so he's used to the pressure. Just hoping that the

:43:33. > :43:41.

:43:41. > :43:45.dressage score across the country yesterday. It is a horse that looks

:43:45. > :43:50.more in reserve. He has to jump the last for the clear and he does!

:43:50. > :43:55.APPLAUSE It is game on for that silver medal. Britain have to

:43:55. > :44:00.depend on William Fox-Pitt to hold his nerve. It's going to be

:44:00. > :44:04.nailbiting time for you back at home. Nicolas Touzaint is back.

:44:04. > :44:11.That double European Champion, he so nearly won gold individually in

:44:11. > :44:21.Athens. This is a horse to put the man's talents back on top of the

:44:21. > :44:32.

:44:32. > :44:37.Obviously, he jumped OK. He was more sore than I thought yesterday.

:44:37. > :44:45.It wasn't - he didn't jump like he could do. I found him quite

:44:45. > :44:48.difficult. Having to ride him differently to how I would normally.

:44:48. > :44:52.One pole down, it felt like it could be a few more. I don't know

:44:52. > :44:56.how we are getting on. We didn't need that, I should think. It is

:44:56. > :45:00.very close. The French are putting in some clear rounds. You said you

:45:00. > :45:04.weren't quite sure, or you are not quite sure why he didn't jump at

:45:04. > :45:10.his best today. Were you saying his muscles? A little bit. Some days,

:45:10. > :45:17.it can take more out of them than others. This morning, he's needed a

:45:17. > :45:22.bit of work to loosen him off. CHEERING Hopefully, that is not

:45:22. > :45:26.another clear... Another clear round for the French! I was saying

:45:26. > :45:30.hopefully it wasn't. It probably is. Oh well. All down to William again

:45:30. > :45:40.now. Like yesterday! Pressure much on him again. Thank you for talking

:45:40. > :45:49.

:45:50. > :45:59.really impressed, Donatien Schauly. He's 26, riding Ocarina de Chanois

:46:00. > :46:07.is. If he jumped clear, he's a team member. Wiliam has got to jump

:46:07. > :46:15.clear to win the silver. If he has worn down, Britain have a little

:46:15. > :46:21.bit of breathing space. I would like to emphasise a little bit more.

:46:21. > :46:26.Cool Mountain has got to come out today and show what he can do.

:46:26. > :46:36.Stumbles, wasn't the luckiest course yesterday, but William did

:46:36. > :46:43.

:46:44. > :46:47.the best job on him. -- pluckiest tan Air show jumping round so far.

:46:47. > :46:54.We have seen some world-class riding through the whole of the

:46:54. > :47:03.competition. France have won Olympic gold, world gold. But not

:47:03. > :47:08.European. Just the last! He's done it! He's done it. Donatien Schauly,

:47:08. > :47:12.the young French army officer, he is being French champion for the

:47:12. > :47:19.last two years. He stays on his dressage score and that's a

:47:19. > :47:24.tremendous achievement for this young man. He's a real man for the

:47:24. > :47:29.future in world sports. No wonder they are pleased and punching the

:47:29. > :47:34.air. The French have really, really held strong, putting masses of

:47:34. > :47:44.pressure on the British team. Absolutely right, he should be

:47:44. > :47:52.

:47:52. > :48:02.pleased with that horse's Britain have got to jump clear to

:48:02. > :48:11.

:48:11. > :48:20.going to be a classic. It's certainly proving that way. In

:48:20. > :48:25.comes Stefano Brecciaroli. It's a very talented horse. Produced back

:48:25. > :48:31.at home in Belgium, but bought by Susanna Bordone's mother for the

:48:31. > :48:35.Italians. This man rides it beautifully. He added 9.2 time

:48:35. > :48:44.penalties. We thought he was travelling quicker than that. He

:48:44. > :48:54.now lies 8th. They were silver medallists, but what a quality

:48:54. > :48:54.

:48:54. > :49:03.horse. This is a horse that has caught the eye last year. Even more

:49:03. > :49:07.so so far this year. I absolutely love him. The quality, he's got the

:49:07. > :49:11.movement, he looks to be class in all three phases. He's come out

:49:11. > :49:15.today and he's really wanting to be careful, very quick off the floor.

:49:15. > :49:20.You are looking for an event horse, and that is what you want them to

:49:20. > :49:28.do, to come out on the last day and look athletic. It makes your job so

:49:28. > :49:33.much easier. Yesterday, Stefano did look very quick. We couldn't

:49:33. > :49:37.believe he'd got time faults. They didn't object to it, so they

:49:37. > :49:47.clearly felt there was time lost in certain places. But it doesn't take

:49:47. > :49:47.

:49:47. > :49:53.away from the scores's performance. -- this horse's performance.

:49:54. > :49:58.classic round again. He is a lovely, lovely horse. He stays on his 45.

:49:58. > :50:03.Italy is not going to win a medal this time. But they are gathering a

:50:03. > :50:07.team together for the future. Fantastic performance from Stefano.

:50:07. > :50:11.He's had a few personal situations going on at the moment, so he

:50:11. > :50:14.hasn't been able to spend as much time working on his horses. But

:50:14. > :50:24.when you got a CALS like this to look forward to, my word, doesn't

:50:24. > :50:31.

:50:31. > :50:38.it make it a much better situation? Germany. We I in the top seven now.

:50:38. > :50:47.As of those seven, Germany have five. That is the sort of strength

:50:47. > :50:55.they have shown. Dirk Schrade, who has been a team member since he was

:50:55. > :50:59.15 years old. The an individual in 2006. He has brought another very

:50:59. > :51:05.good horse, hop and skip. There is Peter Thomsen on the right. One of

:51:05. > :51:10.his colleagues. Dirk Schrade, just six time faults. A very good

:51:10. > :51:14.dressage. That is where Germany really showed how strong they were.

:51:14. > :51:18.Some very exciting dressage for them. Exciting news for the rest of

:51:18. > :51:28.the world, they are really going to be hard to keep out of the top

:51:28. > :51:37.

:51:37. > :51:44.positions when they perform like age on his side. He's 15. It's

:51:44. > :51:50.great to see these older horses staying and eventing into their

:51:50. > :51:55.teenage years. They put so much work into producing them. If you

:51:55. > :52:01.manage them well enough to keep them physically able and capable.

:52:01. > :52:08.You can get a good few years at this level. He gave that plank a

:52:08. > :52:18.good rub. They are sitting on flat caps, they hardly take any Robben.

:52:18. > :52:27.

:52:27. > :52:31.Goodness, he got very close. -- get a grip down the last line. A

:52:31. > :52:41.debt and tidy in front. But luck is with him in this round. And he

:52:41. > :52:44.

:52:44. > :52:54.jumped the last. -- a little bit going right for you, defences will

:52:54. > :53:06.

:53:06. > :53:11.are flying. They are going to enjoy this day. Remember, Dirk Schrade is

:53:11. > :53:16.riding as an individual. Pointing down to his Wolves, he knew he had

:53:16. > :53:26.made a mistake. You appreciate it when a horse looks out for you, so

:53:26. > :53:28.

:53:28. > :53:35.occasions to pull it out for Britain. Now he's got it again.

:53:36. > :53:45.William Fox-Pitt, with his lovely horse, Cool Mountain. It's got to

:53:46. > :53:59.

:53:59. > :54:04.After the World Championships in Kentucky, it really did look so

:54:04. > :54:13.exciting. We knew that it was going to be a battle. There's certainly

:54:13. > :54:17.going to have to be some thought and reviews after the event.

:54:17. > :54:20.Britain, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves. We had so much

:54:20. > :54:27.success at the European Championships. We knew what was

:54:27. > :54:31.going to be tough. All of the other nations are really getting their

:54:31. > :54:41.hats -- act together. They are setting themselves up with some

:54:41. > :54:43.

:54:43. > :54:46.luck, that hasn't necessarily been with us this week. Let's hope we

:54:46. > :54:51.don't necessarily have any more down. We are only talking about one

:54:51. > :55:01.fence, but it can become crucial. And William jumped the last. Almost

:55:01. > :55:13.

:55:13. > :55:18.an unlucky one. But if they are moment of the team. France moves up

:55:18. > :55:23.to the silver medal position. That is how it will remain, and last

:55:24. > :55:26.Germany has some unusual disaster. -- unless.

:55:26. > :55:34.Was there a feeling of disappointment after what happened

:55:34. > :55:37.today? They can only be. You know, each of as have a lot of talent, it

:55:37. > :55:41.is disappointing. They all great jumpers and it just wasn't

:55:41. > :55:44.happening. If you look back over the last few days, we are all lucky

:55:44. > :55:48.to be here. We are lucky to be in one piece this morning. There's a

:55:48. > :55:52.lot to be taken from it, in a positive way. A bronze medal is

:55:52. > :56:02.fantastic, given the week we have had. The individual next for

:56:02. > :56:08.

:56:08. > :56:14.Germany. It is Frank Osthol. When you leave out a man who has won a

:56:14. > :56:18.medal, you know how it is. Little Paint, just six time faults

:56:18. > :56:22.yesterday. His brother was an individual as well. His 5th in the

:56:22. > :56:32.moment on 40. He is literally 10 marks behind the current individual

:56:32. > :56:43.

:56:43. > :56:49.pressing for an individual medal. He will, he is only one fence

:56:50. > :56:54.behind bronze. As close as that. Four points between Sara Algotsson-

:56:54. > :57:04.Ostholt, his wife, and him. Could be a bit of a family discussion.

:57:04. > :57:10.

:57:10. > :57:20.That will be an interesting meal as well, on home territory. He got

:57:20. > :57:28.

:57:28. > :57:32.a flier. The horse came up to him. carefully. The poles are so light.

:57:32. > :57:39.Those Germans are really seeing their very best performance. He

:57:39. > :57:48.stays on 40. We've now got a battle for the individual medals. The home

:57:48. > :57:51.crowd love that. Very interesting, Tina, they stepped up to the

:57:51. > :57:58.world's top as a vocation. Since they have done that, the Germans

:57:58. > :58:02.have got stronger and stronger. Absolutely, to have this sort of

:58:02. > :58:08.course, you can see that horse really wanting to try and jump that

:58:08. > :58:14.last fence. Good old Frank, he is enjoying every minute. That is what

:58:14. > :58:22.it is all about. Your horse has really put it in for you. He's just

:58:22. > :58:27.going to wind it down now. Enjoy the team mates go for the gold

:58:27. > :58:37.medal. Here is one of the young stars, and coming. Almost there, I

:58:37. > :58:45.

:58:45. > :58:50.would suggest. 24-year-old Sandra trying to hang on. She's trying to

:58:50. > :58:55.secure and individual bronze medal, or even an individual medal, at her

:58:55. > :59:00.first attempt. She was a show jumper, but this was such a good

:59:00. > :59:10.looking round yesterday. Just 1.6 time, four seconds over in an

:59:10. > :59:18.otherwise great cross country round. This combination really is the

:59:19. > :59:26.talking horse of the championships. It really looks like a horse that

:59:26. > :59:36.has got it all, in all three phases. A de CALS, gets his knees-up around

:59:36. > :59:43.

:59:43. > :59:47.stretch of the imagination, but it makes it so much easier when the

:59:47. > :59:51.horse has the natural ability to hold his front legs. It helps when

:59:51. > :59:58.you've got the clock ticking and the time in your mind as well.

:59:58. > :00:08.a combination of the HSBC bursary and here. You can see why. Classic

:00:08. > :00:18.Ground. She has put herself in with a chance of a medal. She goes clear

:00:18. > :00:22.

:00:22. > :00:27.air, she stays on 37. She is one seen so many class performances

:00:27. > :00:32.here, I feel like I am repeating myself. There have been some world-

:00:32. > :00:37.class horses here. The Olympics next year will be so exciting.

:00:37. > :00:47.Aren't they just! Look at that crowd on the bank alongside us here.

:00:47. > :00:56.

:00:56. > :01:03.We were talking about the lovely Opgun Louvo. This is Sara

:01:03. > :01:07.Algotsson-Ostholt and Wega. It's a lovely horse, Swedish bloodlines.

:01:07. > :01:11.This was inside the time yesterday. They were seventh after dressage.

:01:11. > :01:15.Then with a classic clear round yesterday, moved up to third, the

:01:15. > :01:25.bronze medal position. Can they hold it or could they go even

:01:25. > :01:46.

:01:46. > :01:56.it looked like it was going to do the job today. It's so far doing

:01:56. > :02:03.

:02:03. > :02:08.real jumping machine, Tina. It is great - exactly - to have a matter,

:02:08. > :02:15.yes she is here as a competition horse, but if you bred here, you

:02:15. > :02:20.can breed from her again. Look at their future as well. What a

:02:20. > :02:30.fabulous horse to have in your yard and so proud when you have produced

:02:30. > :02:36.

:02:36. > :02:39.Oh! Sweden and Sara Algotsson- Ostholt loses the individual bronze.

:02:39. > :02:44.She gets four for the first fence down and four for the refusal.

:02:44. > :02:49.There is likely to be time penalties as well. It means Sandra

:02:49. > :02:56.Auffarth will definitely get bronze. Germany could get gold, silver,

:02:56. > :03:01.bronze. Just missed her line going in and didn't make up the distance

:03:01. > :03:07.through that double. Oh what a shame! APPLAUSE That was such a

:03:07. > :03:13.disappointing end. It is 18 to add. Well! That's time faults, the

:03:13. > :03:23.biggest problem there. It is one for one over that time allowed of

:03:23. > :03:27.89 seconds. So she finishes on a score of 54. Poor Sara, Frank

:03:27. > :03:32.Osthol will have to be consoling her tonight. So near but yet so far.

:03:32. > :03:38.Just so unfortunate. She was just a little bit off that vertical. The

:03:38. > :03:43.horse then felt that it needed to put another stride in. He could not

:03:43. > :03:47.jump it. Because the pole came with her, didn't feel that she could

:03:48. > :03:52.jump out over it. That is one of the worst nightmares when you are

:03:52. > :03:57.dreaming of your showjumping round. APPLAUSE To lose a medal like that,

:03:57. > :04:05.how disappointing for her. moves down to 11th at the moment.

:04:05. > :04:15.This's two to go. Now, it is the World Champion, Michael Jung with

:04:15. > :04:20.

:04:20. > :04:28.convincing to win the individual world title in the World Equestrian

:04:28. > :04:32.Games in Kentucky. He was pretty convincing yesterday. He was quite

:04:32. > :04:37.unbelievable at the third last. Chose to go the quick route. Took a

:04:37. > :04:40.stride out to that corner, it was quite breathtaking to watch.

:04:40. > :04:44.Probably didn't plan to go through three strides but that was the

:04:44. > :04:51.position he was in so he went with it. The important part here is that

:04:52. > :04:56.if he jumps a clear round, he very much puts the pressure on the

:04:56. > :05:01.current leader after cross-country, Ingrid Klimke, with FRH Butts

:05:01. > :05:07.Abraxxas, who has not always been the easiest show jumper. Tends to

:05:08. > :05:17.be the weakest phase. You have to jump clear if this man jumps clear

:05:18. > :05:25.

:05:25. > :05:28.to win. So there is a battle on this horse has jumped beautifully.

:05:28. > :05:37.What a round! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE He never

:05:37. > :05:42.looked like touching a pole. This man could end up World

:05:42. > :05:50.Champion and European champion. What are the odds on London next

:05:50. > :05:55.year? Oh! Michael Jung, 33.3, one round to go. Will it be Michael

:05:55. > :06:05.Jung as European Champion, or will it be the last to go, Ingrid

:06:05. > :06:15.

:06:15. > :06:21.jump a clear to win the European this round as well. They are quite

:06:21. > :06:31.a long way ahead. It would have to be a big error for that to change.

:06:31. > :06:33.

:06:33. > :06:42.But this girl is really gunning for to be in this position. Oh and

:06:42. > :06:50.she's had the back rail at that Oxer. She didn't get very high over

:06:50. > :06:56.that fence. This horse has dropped down in the past. Things are not

:06:56. > :07:05.going well. It was such a lovely performance yesterday. Such a shame

:07:05. > :07:15.to see this sort of thing happen. He looks a bit flat. I haven't seen

:07:15. > :07:25.her ride in this bridle before. means Frank Osthol moves up to take

:07:25. > :07:36.

:07:36. > :07:44.European individual title gone and has that - it's 24. The time is all

:07:44. > :07:54.right. APPLAUSE 24 to add. She goes on 54 and goes right down the

:07:54. > :07:58.

:07:58. > :08:05.leaderboard. The crowd giving her a very big hand. She is so popular.

:08:05. > :08:13.APPLAUSE Such a pity. But it means that Michael Jung marches on and

:08:13. > :08:18.Michael Jung now adds the European title to his world title in

:08:18. > :08:24.Kentucky last year. It means the young Sandra Auffarth wins the

:08:24. > :08:31.silver medal. There we are. And Frank Osthol wins the bronze.

:08:31. > :08:36.Germany take the first four places. Italy's Stefano Brecciaroli with

:08:36. > :08:40.Apollo van de Wendi Kurt Hoeve is fifth. The Frenchman is sixth.

:08:40. > :08:47.William Fox-Pitt is seventh for Britain. There we go down. Then it

:08:47. > :08:57.is Nicola Wilson in 16th. Piggy French of course finishing in the

:08:57. > :09:07.top ten. Still a dramatic end. Here is the team standings for the 30th

:09:07. > :09:08.

:09:08. > :09:13.the fourth time. They won it last year. They win it again here in

:09:13. > :09:17.Luhmuhlen. France taking silver. Remember that. That is the eighth

:09:17. > :09:22.time they have won silver, never having won gold. Britain, well

:09:22. > :09:26.disappointing one has to say, takes the bronze. Maybe it is a wake-up

:09:26. > :09:29.the bronze. Maybe it is a wake-up call for Olympics 2012.

:09:29. > :09:36.Here is the individual European Champion, Michael Jung. Adding to

:09:36. > :09:42.your world title as well, what does this mean to you? Yeah, I'm - it is

:09:42. > :09:47.unbelievable. I'm so happy. I'm happy about my horse. The horse is

:09:47. > :09:51.really fantastic in all three disciplines. Does a really good

:09:51. > :10:00.dressage. Was nervous in the beginning. But he concentrate the

:10:00. > :10:06.rest from the dressage. Super round in the cross and the jumping was

:10:06. > :10:11.brilliant. He jumps really good. Yeah, I say thank you to all the

:10:11. > :10:16.people who helped that I can ride the horse for a long time. I hope

:10:16. > :10:24.we have a long future. How special was it to win this title here in

:10:24. > :10:31.Luhmuhlen in front of your own fans? Yeah, it is really special.

:10:31. > :10:36.In my country, many friends, many people are coming and see and I'm

:10:36. > :10:41.very happy that this was really good. Every right to be happy. Well

:10:41. > :10:47.done. Thank you. So congratulations to Michael Jung, he is the

:10:47. > :10:55.individual champion. That means he is currently the reigning World and

:10:55. > :11:04.European champion. Of course, that's helped contribute to their

:11:04. > :11:06.team gold medal, finishing in the first four places. France took the

:11:06. > :11:09.silver and Britain the bronze. Is there a deflated feeling? Naturally,

:11:10. > :11:14.the British are disappointed. We came here with a strong team.

:11:14. > :11:19.Hoping to be vying for the gold medal. To lose it in the

:11:19. > :11:22.showjumping, just by a simple fence down, to get the bronze, but let's

:11:23. > :11:26.not get away from the fact, it is a European Championship. Luck was not

:11:26. > :11:30.on our side this week. A bronze medal is still a bronze medal.

:11:30. > :11:33.There is plenty to work for to get us back on track for next year.

:11:34. > :11:38.People come here and they look at our record and they think we will

:11:38. > :11:42.turn up here, the worst we would hope for is silver. No individual

:11:42. > :11:46.medals either. I think a lot of our fans would be disappointed?

:11:46. > :11:50.Naturally they are. The Germans have fielded a strong hand this

:11:50. > :11:54.week. Home territory. 12 riders here. They have got some world-

:11:54. > :11:57.class combinations and younger riders coming through. Britain have

:11:57. > :12:01.the same situation. We have got some super young riders to look

:12:01. > :12:09.forward to for the future. It has not gone our way this weekend. We

:12:09. > :12:19.will be there gunning at London. The equestrian show rolls on on the

:12:19. > :12:41.

:12:41. > :12:45.So a tough few days in the office for the great British eventing team.

:12:45. > :12:49.They came to Luhmuhlen defending a great record in the European

:12:50. > :12:52.Championships. Ultimately, they weren't up to it. In the end

:12:52. > :13:02.Germany win the European Championships for the first time on

:13:02. > :13:10.
