:00:45. > :00:52.Good afternoon. It has been quite a week. In the studio we have plenty
:00:53. > :00:55.of experience in the shape of Danny Mills and Mark Schwarzer. And Alan
:00:56. > :01:00.Shearer is joining us for the early part of the programme. We start with
:01:01. > :01:05.the big story of the last few days. Sam Allardyce's reign came to an end
:01:06. > :01:22.after one game and 67 days doing his dream job. The new England football
:01:23. > :01:28.manager will be Sam Allardyce. This is the job I've been waiting for for
:01:29. > :01:36.many years and I'm absolutely delighted. I think I can make the
:01:37. > :01:48.team better and I think I'm tough enough to take it. Bring it on.
:01:49. > :02:01.It's in! What a finish first Sam Allardyce's first match as the
:02:02. > :02:02.England manager. The football Association is investigating
:02:03. > :02:08.allegations concerning Sam Allardyce. The Daily Telegraph says
:02:09. > :02:13.he offered advice on how to get around rules on player transfers.
:02:14. > :02:14.One of his colleagues talks about paying colleagues or managers to
:02:15. > :02:26.arrange a transfer. For him to be standing on the brink
:02:27. > :02:29.of losing that job for a thing that has nothing to do with football is a
:02:30. > :02:40.crying shame. Some breaking news. The FA is
:02:41. > :02:49.confirming Sam Allardyce is leaving his position as England manager.
:02:50. > :02:52.We've concluded, and Sam has agreed, that his behaviour was inappropriate
:02:53. > :03:03.and frankly, not what is expected of an England manager. On reflection,
:03:04. > :03:07.silly thing to do, just to let everybody know I helped out somebody
:03:08. > :03:11.I've known for 30 years. It was an error of judgment on my behalf and
:03:12. > :03:14.I've paid the consequences. But entrapment has won on this occasion
:03:15. > :03:28.and I've got to accept that. Earlier this week you said it was a
:03:29. > :03:35.new low for England, that they were a laughing stock. Has your mood
:03:36. > :03:38.brightened? I am still angry, still sad, still looking at the whole
:03:39. > :03:44.situation thinking it is very embarrassing. For Sam, for England,
:03:45. > :03:52.for the whole the sugar bowl. I thought we could not go any lower
:03:53. > :03:56.after the Iceland defeat -- for the Hall of English football. I'm
:03:57. > :04:01.positive we can only go one way now. He was not everybody's first choice
:04:02. > :04:05.but with his press conference at his first game he turned everyone
:04:06. > :04:15.around. For him to lose the job which he wanted for years, it was
:04:16. > :04:22.his dream job, for him to lose it in that way, he will look at himself
:04:23. > :04:27.and say, you stupid idiot, how could I lose a job that way. There are
:04:28. > :04:30.other ways to lose it, by performance, if that happens then it
:04:31. > :04:37.happens but to lose it in that way is embarrassing for him and English
:04:38. > :04:44.football. It was a massive error of judgment. He uses entrapment, OK,
:04:45. > :04:52.the Telegraph took the lead off the job but he put his hand in the
:04:53. > :05:03.cookie jar. There are two big issues, one about getting round FA
:05:04. > :05:09.rules, and also greed, chasing ?400,000 when he's just been given a
:05:10. > :05:16.massive contract. The FA were in an impossible situation. If they'd not
:05:17. > :05:20.got rid of him, everyone would say they were weak. There are new guys
:05:21. > :05:29.in charge. After the week in which a player was suspended for a tweet
:05:30. > :05:33.from four years ago, what option that they have? Part of me feels a
:05:34. > :05:42.little bit sorry for him and another part says, you fool. Do you think
:05:43. > :05:47.they had any option? I think he left them with no option. He has used the
:05:48. > :05:53.word entrapment, I don't think so, he made the mistake himself. He
:05:54. > :05:58.cannot blame anyone but himself. The actual fact of being offered money
:05:59. > :06:04.to speak as a guest speaker was one part of it but being offered advice
:06:05. > :06:09.on how to get round a rule in the league that is illegal was another
:06:10. > :06:18.thing. That was what ended it for him. Do we need a complete
:06:19. > :06:28.restructuring of the way that we do things with regards player
:06:29. > :06:31.transfers? Do we need more scrutiny? Yes, you need to look into
:06:32. > :06:36.everything, there needs to be clarity, transparency, and in some
:06:37. > :06:42.cases there is a problem from top to bottom. The question is, does
:06:43. > :06:46.everyone want the rules to change? I don't think so. There's money to be
:06:47. > :06:54.made and I'm pretty sure people have made a hell of a lot of money. I
:06:55. > :06:57.think it's a chance for the FA and the Premier League to get together
:06:58. > :07:01.and really clamped down. It's better than it used to be with agents and
:07:02. > :07:08.it is more transparent, but it's not crystal clear. There is an
:07:09. > :07:12.opportunity to flout the law. Now it's an opportunity to get together
:07:13. > :07:16.and stop it once and for all, to make it completely open about who is
:07:17. > :07:22.getting paid what. Why not publish it? Have it in the public domain. I
:07:23. > :07:27.know in some cases players don't even know what the agents are
:07:28. > :07:31.charging them. There needs to be away for the PFA and the Premier
:07:32. > :07:37.League to educate players to look at the system and say, come on, that
:07:38. > :07:46.can't be right. There is so much money around that it does attract
:07:47. > :07:53.greed. You've got the issue of finding another England manager. We
:07:54. > :07:57.interviewed Gudjohnsen for next week and this is what he said they were
:07:58. > :08:05.talking about when they played England. We all sensed that the
:08:06. > :08:10.world expects England to beat Iceland but one thing our manager
:08:11. > :08:14.pointed out, in recent years, we are playing against the most overrated
:08:15. > :08:22.national team saved. He said that to you? He said that, and it got us
:08:23. > :08:27.thinking looking back, it is true, the expectations are always so high
:08:28. > :08:32.for England, there is so much pressure for England to do well.
:08:33. > :08:37.That is a pretty brutal assessment for a team which had a great
:08:38. > :08:42.tournament, Iceland, but they are Iceland, and for them to look at the
:08:43. > :08:48.team and say that there is no more a team overrated in the world and then
:08:49. > :08:52.they beat them? And? I did not expect us to go into the tournament
:08:53. > :08:56.and win it. I certainly expected us to beat Iceland. But I think we are
:08:57. > :09:09.at a psychological low in the country.
:09:10. > :09:20.Germany went for Mac years and they thought they were getting low. We
:09:21. > :09:25.have gone 20 years since 1996. Something drastic needs to be done.
:09:26. > :09:29.We need to improve things. I'm pleased Gareth Wright been given the
:09:30. > :09:34.opportunity, he's got the best interview out of anyone -- Gareth
:09:35. > :09:42.Southgate. He's got an opportunity, gives everyone a bit of breathing
:09:43. > :09:47.space. Germany got it right when they appointed Jurgen Klinsmann.
:09:48. > :09:52.They gave him control to overhaul everything. To bring in football
:09:53. > :09:58.people, not people in suits, football people. They made drastic
:09:59. > :10:06.decisions. They did not quite when it but look what happened after he
:10:07. > :10:10.put that in place. Not done badly. You know Gareth Southgate well, will
:10:11. > :10:16.he be looking at this as a huge opportunity to prove he can control
:10:17. > :10:22.the dressing room and hopefully take England in a different direction? It
:10:23. > :10:26.was interesting to see his interview when he was announced as caretaker
:10:27. > :10:29.manager, there was a sense he was willing and wanting to take up this
:10:30. > :10:38.opportunity. He's got four games to show what he can do. It will be
:10:39. > :10:43.difficult for him, he's lost managers who have given him time and
:10:44. > :10:46.help them along the way. He's got this opportunity to taking on
:10:47. > :10:59.forward. If he gets the right result, because he knows the people,
:11:00. > :11:03.and he's a top pro. Have a look at the odds for the next England
:11:04. > :11:11.manager. We'll hear from Arsene Wenger in a moment. He is third on
:11:12. > :11:18.that list. He was first choice last time round, would you like to see
:11:19. > :11:22.someone like that? He's never been a huge fan of the English media and
:11:23. > :11:35.press. We've seen how intrusive they can be. At his age, is this really
:11:36. > :11:46.an easier life? Do you want that scrutiny? Gareth has got a great
:11:47. > :11:51.opportunity. He's engaged and taken on a new younger team. He buys into
:11:52. > :11:56.social media. His understanding the younger players and what they want.
:11:57. > :12:03.That's where he has an advantage. It has to be an English men. We are
:12:04. > :12:09.England and we have to be managed by an English person. We need to find a
:12:10. > :12:12.way to incentivise our former international players to stay in the
:12:13. > :12:15.game. A lot of them are multimillionaires. There's no
:12:16. > :12:20.incentive to keep them in the game. We've got to find a way to keep
:12:21. > :12:24.Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Rio Ferdinand in the game. When I did my
:12:25. > :12:29.coaching badges I had to go to Scotland to do them. Other players
:12:30. > :12:36.used to go to Ireland and Wales. That cannot be right. There needs to
:12:37. > :12:41.be away for our FA who have played at the highest level, know what has
:12:42. > :12:45.gone wrong, to look at them and speak to them and get their advice.
:12:46. > :12:53.Not just the guys in the media like what happened three or four months
:12:54. > :12:59.ago. Get these guys to stay in the game because they know what's gone
:13:00. > :13:08.wrong. I think that's a great point. Players in the Dutch system that
:13:09. > :13:14.have come back into it, they are all there and around it now. Plus the
:13:15. > :13:18.legend Viv had before. They are not going back for money. Why can we do
:13:19. > :13:26.that? You need the environment. Someone like Gareth, you are able to
:13:27. > :13:31.bring in and show the generation of players that there is a path and if
:13:32. > :13:38.Gareth had the job full time he will have time. He's worked hard with the
:13:39. > :13:43.players. Thanks for that. Alan, I think you need to go and have a lie
:13:44. > :13:52.down. But I'm sure you will be interested in some of this that we
:13:53. > :13:58.have coming up. Some of the old boys are back to grill Arsene Wenger as
:13:59. > :14:02.he celebrates 20 years at Arsenal. I try to be honest, committed and
:14:03. > :14:06.loyal through my career here. Sunderland may be bottom of the
:14:07. > :14:12.table but David Moyes is full of fight. It's got 45,000 people who
:14:13. > :14:16.come to the games every week. Even when the team is not doing well but
:14:17. > :14:24.supporters stick with it. He's a World Cup winner with titles to his
:14:25. > :14:41.name. Can Llorente be the man to save Swansea? And we have our Jaap
:14:42. > :14:46.with Stam. We will talk about Spurs against man city later but it is 20
:14:47. > :14:51.years to the day since Arsene Wenger became manager of Arsenal. His first
:14:52. > :14:53.match was a 2-0 win away at Blackburn as he began a marathon
:14:54. > :14:58.which has included three Premier League titles and six FA cups. A few
:14:59. > :15:15.of his former players have been grilling the gaffer.
:15:16. > :15:27.My main ambition is to bring success to the team and satisfy the people
:15:28. > :15:32.of Arsenal. Welcome to our new coach Arsene
:15:33. > :15:39.Wenger, we wish him a very long stay. And they were right. Did you
:15:40. > :15:43.think it would last this long? No, because you know, it is exactly the
:15:44. > :15:48.same when playing football. You think about the next game, the next
:15:49. > :15:52.game, the next game, and when you look back, you think suddenly it is
:15:53. > :15:57.over and you have played is a year, you don't know how it has gone but
:15:58. > :16:02.it has gone. The big advantage in our job is you go to the future and
:16:03. > :16:08.not back. We can say they were quite literally
:16:09. > :16:12.unbeatenable. In 2003, we lost the Championship and I asked the players
:16:13. > :16:18.in preseason why did we lose the Championship? They told me because
:16:19. > :16:23.of you. I said oh yes, why? They said because yout us under too much
:16:24. > :16:26.pressure, they said we want to win the Championship without losing a
:16:27. > :16:30.game. Then I said look, believe really we can do that, it would be
:16:31. > :16:35.great. You can become, do something special. Let's go for it at least, I
:16:36. > :16:40.don't know how it happened, but game after game, we didn't lose and we
:16:41. > :16:45.won the Championship with five games to go, so I said usually you lose
:16:46. > :16:52.the next game, everybody switches off. So I told them, who wanted to
:16:53. > :17:04.have a breather. Now you can become immortal.
:17:05. > :17:14.When I joined in 2006, it was almost only young players who were around,
:17:15. > :17:17.and I didn't understand why Arsenal wanted to buy experienced player.
:17:18. > :17:23.But a they had not the money. Not the money and I just made an
:17:24. > :17:28.interview with Henry, at some stage he said look, boss, it is nice to
:17:29. > :17:34.have young players but I am 30 years old, I have no time to wait until, I
:17:35. > :17:38.am ready to win, I want to go now. What I could understand, because
:17:39. > :17:46.when the guy gets to 30, the clock tick, and you think, it is not much
:17:47. > :17:49.time left for me, I have to win now. That is why Patrick, Henry, they
:17:50. > :17:53.left because of that reason. Did they lose patience? Of course, you
:17:54. > :18:00.can never cheat a dressing room. We decided to move in the new stadium
:18:01. > :18:05.in 2006. And the same time, we had less finances available, and we had
:18:06. > :18:13.to slowly sell all our best players. It became much more difficult to
:18:14. > :18:18.compete financially, and this was a difficult years, 2006, to 2012,
:18:19. > :18:26.because we had still good players. Top players, but maybe not the
:18:27. > :18:32.maturity. Club starts life in the Emirates, stadium after 93 years and
:18:33. > :18:38.2010 games at high borough. Borough:? When I started to play we
:18:39. > :18:43.needed a better pitch. It was nice to play at Highbury, it is our home
:18:44. > :18:47.and it was fantastic, but the players, probably prefer a bigger
:18:48. > :18:51.pitch. If Henry had a bigger pitch, do you think we would have fared
:18:52. > :18:57.better? Ewe spoke about Highbury, Highbury in my heart is special, but
:18:58. > :19:01.of course, the team, they would have done as well, if not better at the
:19:02. > :19:08.Emirates. It takes you a while to feel really at home. West Ham is
:19:09. > :19:12.facing... Absolutely. A bit now. Wasn't there a time when somebody
:19:13. > :19:16.from the board or someone could say that we might as a club have some
:19:17. > :19:20.barren times because of the fact we will have to pay for this, so it
:19:21. > :19:24.won't be the kind of players that you might be expecting to be at club
:19:25. > :19:27.any more, we will have to, why didn't someone are the club say
:19:28. > :19:33.something? I don't know, because I am responsible for the result, and
:19:34. > :19:37.what happened at the time, Ian, is that the first five, six years were
:19:38. > :19:41.very delicate, because we had to pay back our debt. We didn't know if we
:19:42. > :19:49.would fill the stadium. Weed that to be three years out of five in the
:19:50. > :19:52.Champions League. So, I signed for that, knowing that the five years
:19:53. > :19:59.would suffer, maybe seven or eight or nine.
:20:00. > :20:04.You have had to put the teams in the Emirates, had to qualify for the
:20:05. > :20:08.Champions League continuously, and you in the way you have become the
:20:09. > :20:12.great manager you are and what you have won before, sacrificed a lot of
:20:13. > :20:16.that for the Emirates,s, has that been worth it? It is a very good
:20:17. > :20:23.question, Ian. I will face that question, that question one day, you
:20:24. > :20:27.know. But, I failed as well, but of course there is thes a expect of
:20:28. > :20:31.winning premise -- the aspect of winning the Premiership that is not
:20:32. > :20:37.replacement. -- replaceable. There is loyalty as well, I think it is
:20:38. > :20:43.important, because the only thing quality I give myself, I say no to
:20:44. > :20:50.many club, to conduct this project. To survive, with the important
:20:51. > :20:55.expenses you made, and at the end of the day, is it right or wrong? I
:20:56. > :21:01.don't know. But I am happy for having done it, because now is the
:21:02. > :21:05.club is in the different area, and hopefully -- era and hopefully we
:21:06. > :21:12.will continue to play at the o and win Championships again.
:21:13. > :21:18.Do you think if it ended tomorrow, for some reason because a comet hit
:21:19. > :21:22.the world, and you know, it smashed the world up like amageddon the
:21:23. > :21:31.film. How would you feel your legacy... I try to be honest,
:21:32. > :21:37.committed and loyal, during my career here, and that I was not
:21:38. > :21:45.ashamed for this club, and that I leave the club in the position where
:21:46. > :21:49.it can move on, and today i Arsenal, I don't know how many fans we have
:21:50. > :21:52.all over the world but it is a respected and loved club, and I hope
:21:53. > :21:59.that it will become even bigger in the future. That is what I would
:22:00. > :22:00.love to see. From hopefully from paradise.
:22:01. > :22:05.LAUGHTER .
:22:06. > :22:10.I wonder what the view will be. Your career Mark, started in England, a
:22:11. > :22:14.month after Wenger began at Arsenal. He has had such an influence on the
:22:15. > :22:18.game. It has been incredible really. People talk a lot about you know, he
:22:19. > :22:22.should go and when is he going to go, when will his time be up. There
:22:23. > :22:27.will be a time where he will move on, will he be able to replace him?
:22:28. > :22:31.That is the big question. What is interesting in seeing that what a
:22:32. > :22:35.gamble they must have taken, you know, and Danny mentioned it before
:22:36. > :22:40.off air, leads were in a similar situation where they had to qualify
:22:41. > :22:44.for the Champions League and didn't. -- Leeds, you think how fine that
:22:45. > :22:47.line was. Does hearing some of the
:22:48. > :22:51.explanation, does it temper some of the criticism to you think? I don't
:22:52. > :22:55.know about you, I have not heard him be so open and honest about the
:22:56. > :22:59.mistakes he has made and the reasons behind t youth culture, the policy
:23:00. > :23:03.and why thater were play buying the players they were. You can see the
:23:04. > :23:08.intensity of the interview and you can see the respect the players have
:23:09. > :23:12.for him, and maybe he was more open with the player, rather than a
:23:13. > :23:17.general journalist, that were probing him. He seemed nor relaxed.
:23:18. > :23:21.But that honesty is incredible talking about when Henry said I want
:23:22. > :23:25.to leave because you are bringing through young players and I don't
:23:26. > :23:29.have years to wait for them to be great. I want to win. That is all
:23:30. > :23:33.players wanted. Maybe he has been more honest with the players behind
:23:34. > :23:38.closed doors than he has with the media, so that is... That is why
:23:39. > :23:42.they still respect him. Maybe the players have understood the process,
:23:43. > :23:46.the fans and the rest of us have maybe asked those questions. He
:23:47. > :23:50.talks about honesty and loyalty which are key for him, the one thing
:23:51. > :23:54.maybe he did aren't he will look back and say I may have done this
:23:55. > :23:58.differently is let the fans know more information about why we are
:23:59. > :24:02.doing what we are doing, I think people sort of expected it or in the
:24:03. > :24:05.back of their minds could see that was the reason, it would have been
:24:06. > :24:10.nice to hear it from the manager or the club. OK, shall we have some
:24:11. > :24:13.action? The instalment of Friday night football was last night, which
:24:14. > :24:17.kicked off this round of Premier League fixtures. Everton were at
:24:18. > :24:22.home to Crystal Palace chasing a fourth win in a row.
:24:23. > :24:32.Everton with the intention of getting back to winning ways,
:24:33. > :24:37.picking up the form they previously shown under Koeman. Barry looking
:24:38. > :24:41.for Lukaku. Might fall to the Belgian again, it was a high foot as
:24:42. > :24:49.well. Everton free-kick, right on the edge
:24:50. > :24:57.of the penalty area. Lukaku with it. And they have made the most of that
:24:58. > :25:05.opportunity. Lukaku with his fifth goal in six Premier League games. To
:25:06. > :25:08.give Everton the lead. Up and over the wall and the goalkeeper
:25:09. > :25:16.indicating he wanted the wall to jump. They didn't and and Everton
:25:17. > :25:20.are in front. Ledley. Trying to inject more pace into the
:25:21. > :25:25.game. Benteke jumping and jumping especially. What a header.
:25:26. > :25:29.From Christian Benteke. Something out of nothing. He had so much to do
:25:30. > :25:37.there. What a leap! An inch perfect header.
:25:38. > :25:42.That is why Crystal Palace brought him to the club. Everton 1, Palace
:25:43. > :25:47.1. That has changed the atmosphere
:25:48. > :25:53.round Goodison Park. Benteke back on Merseyside with a goal. Here comes
:25:54. > :25:58.Bolasie against his former club. He has got free. What a challenge
:25:59. > :26:02.from Kelly. He was the save your there, Martin
:26:03. > :26:06.Kelly. -- saviour there. Punch.
:26:07. > :26:13.-- Puncheon. Bolasie. Straight back in from Ward.
:26:14. > :26:20.Another good header, it is Delaney this time. And Palace lead but the
:26:21. > :26:30.flag is up. Watch McArthur, he is offside, does the official think
:26:31. > :26:33.that he is active? One thing they have been talking about, is that
:26:34. > :26:38.Delaney disallowed goal. Pardew said it was a difficult decision but
:26:39. > :26:42.maybe right one, you want to clarify it was the right decision. At first
:26:43. > :26:47.look you think the player doesn't touch the ball, it is not a problem.
:26:48. > :26:51.Here, Delaney is on pied o side. That is the issue there. And row
:26:52. > :26:53.don't see it from this angle. That is interfering with play. The
:26:54. > :27:00.goalkeeper is looking at the player. He thinks she going to head it. He
:27:01. > :27:04.is in an interim position. This is the angle that is perfect.
:27:05. > :27:08.Linesman's flag goes up now. He knows that player is in the offside
:27:09. > :27:13.position, he is interfering with play, he putses his flag up. I don't
:27:14. > :27:18.know he is sure she interfering. That is why the discussion takes
:27:19. > :27:22.place, I don't think he realise, he sees the player is offside, puts the
:27:23. > :27:26.flag up, calls the referee over and they have that discussion, John moss
:27:27. > :27:32.says yes he was interfering. That is how it should happen. The linesman
:27:33. > :27:36.thinks he is offside. Puts the flag up. They agree yes he was, no he
:27:37. > :27:43.wasn't, they get the decision right. For once, well done the official.
:27:44. > :27:46.From a goalkeeper's perspective Stekelenburg is reacting to
:27:47. > :27:50.McArthur. It is career it is interfering with the goalkeeper.
:27:51. > :27:54.It's a spot on decision. It was great working by the two of them.
:27:55. > :27:57.Glad we cleared that up. On Monday night Burnley were in action against
:27:58. > :28:02.Watford. The goals from that one. The hosts took the lead in the 38th
:28:03. > :28:06.minute when Defour picked out Hendrick in the box, and the Shaggy
:28:07. > :28:09.haired man managed to do the business. The record signing
:28:10. > :28:13.notching his first goal for the club. Watford had a chance to level
:28:14. > :28:17.it shortly after the break. Deeney's effort was well saved by Heaton. It
:28:18. > :28:21.is in the 50th minute Defour was at it again. Another good cross, this
:28:22. > :28:27.time on the end of that delivery was Keane. I bond no wonder he was
:28:28. > :28:31.happy. The defender first ever Premier League goal for Keane,
:28:32. > :28:36.helping his side to three points and they are up to 13th place in the
:28:37. > :28:39.table. Arsenal are next for Burnley
:28:40. > :28:45.tomorrow. Here are the rest of the fixtures for you. The top two meet
:28:46. > :28:48.tomorrow as well. Stoke looking for their first win against Manchester
:28:49. > :28:53.United. David Moyes talking to Kevin Kilbane
:28:54. > :28:58.adds Sunderland play West Brom. To the early kick off at Swansea where
:28:59. > :29:03.the head coach said this week he may need to beat Liverpool to keep his
:29:04. > :29:09.job. Or this fellow could be important in the coming months.
:29:10. > :30:45.Llorente has been talking to us. You've played in La Liga, Italy, and
:30:46. > :31:08.the Premier League. What other differences?
:31:09. > :31:42.How would you describe your time in Italy with Juventus?
:31:43. > :31:45.Guidolin is under a lot of pressure and receiving a lot of criticism. Do
:31:46. > :32:57.you think it is fair? He said the Premier League was a
:32:58. > :33:06.physical one. Two physical because he is injured and not in the squad.
:33:07. > :33:13.Let's not talk about him. Let's talk about the manager. He is put more
:33:14. > :33:19.pressure on himself by saying they likely to win this game. Is it a
:33:20. > :33:23.difficult situation? I think so. The last half of last season, turned
:33:24. > :33:27.things around, this season has not started well for him. They've had
:33:28. > :33:38.the takeover as well so they've got American owners, there's been a lot
:33:39. > :33:49.of speculation about a new manager. This game could be his last game in
:33:50. > :34:02.charge if he does not win. I think he is quite realistic. Going
:34:03. > :34:09.forward, we show you the team. Dejan Lovren and returned to the team.
:34:10. > :34:15.Are they the best attacking team we've seen so far? They are
:34:16. > :34:23.outstanding. They are so fluid. The front five, Jason Henderson sets and
:34:24. > :34:29.allows them to express themselves. Adam Lallana might start on the left
:34:30. > :34:37.wing then he's on the right. Defenders will be thinking, or by
:34:38. > :34:41.Mark? I think it will be similar to when they were so close under
:34:42. > :34:46.Brendan Rodgers. Wing forward, they will be so good to watch. My query
:34:47. > :34:51.is whether they are strong enough defensively throughout the season to
:34:52. > :34:57.win the title. I think they might run it close but they will be so
:34:58. > :35:03.entertaining to watch. We will keep an eye on them. If you've just
:35:04. > :35:07.turned on, welcome to football focus. We've got 20 more to come. --
:35:08. > :35:23.plenty more to come. You might remember Jaap Stam as one
:35:24. > :35:27.of the greatest defenders in the Premier League. He is finding his
:35:28. > :35:32.managerial feat at Reading. No to a man who finds himself at Sunderland.
:35:33. > :35:38.It has not been easy so far, without a win since taking over in the
:35:39. > :35:46.summer. David Moyes sat down with a man he and we know well. Back at my
:35:47. > :35:51.old club, hugely passionate, but recent battles with relegation. I'm
:35:52. > :35:55.here to speak to my old gaffer, David Moyes, to see if he can buck
:35:56. > :35:59.the trend. 20 years since we came across each other. You've been a
:36:00. > :36:04.huge influence on my career. Hope Road are you of what you've achieved
:36:05. > :36:10.over 20 in management? -- how proud you. I was going to introduce you, I
:36:11. > :36:18.said I remembered you coming out as a then boy, it is amazing how
:36:19. > :36:25.quickly time changes. What was your question? Do you still tell the
:36:26. > :36:38.players how good you are? That stood in my mind. It used to slip my
:36:39. > :36:44.mind... You've always got to talk yourself up because very few people
:36:45. > :36:52.do. Huge club, you've been linked and offered the job a few times, why
:36:53. > :36:57.did you take it now? I wanted to get back into football, I had a great
:36:58. > :37:06.love of it, and I turned down a few jobs. I had other opportunities in
:37:07. > :37:14.different places. The biggest thing is it has got 40,000 people who keep
:37:15. > :37:21.coming to the game. You've come smack bang in the middle of transfer
:37:22. > :37:24.window, how difficult was that? I did not have a long enough period to
:37:25. > :37:35.see all the players who were not getting used. I would never have
:37:36. > :37:39.signed any players without watching them before. This summer was not the
:37:40. > :37:54.same, so we've tried to bring players on shorter term contracts.
:37:55. > :38:02.How do you judge the criticism of the players? The rule is to not
:38:03. > :38:14.criticise your players in public. Generally, I try to do that. But I
:38:15. > :38:18.think the managers often get the blame for bad performances and
:38:19. > :38:27.sometimes they need to say, we are the ones getting it every week. Can
:38:28. > :38:34.you say what you want to see in the same way you used to do? You mellow
:38:35. > :38:39.as you get older but you're not sure how they will react. That is part of
:38:40. > :38:58.your development. It will change as you get older. It is the ultimate
:38:59. > :39:06.heartbreaker. That was great because we got the lead and we've been
:39:07. > :39:09.trying to get that. We've had some difficult, resolute performance away
:39:10. > :39:26.from home. There's point when you need to take responsibility. This
:39:27. > :39:32.week, West Brom, Tony Pulis has had 1000 games in club management and we
:39:33. > :39:37.worked out you are on 843. Not too far behind him. I'd love to get to
:39:38. > :39:41.1000 games which he has done, a great achievement, something which a
:39:42. > :39:47.lot of managers see as a target. I hope I can rebuild Sunderland to a
:39:48. > :39:53.level where the people here will see improvement, the excited by the
:39:54. > :39:58.club. We need to get it more attractive than it does. The main
:39:59. > :40:07.thing is to win games and get away from the bottom of the league.
:40:08. > :40:12.Swansea have taken the lead against Liverpool. Let's talk about
:40:13. > :40:17.Sunderland. He's got a big job there. Recruitment has been a big
:40:18. > :40:26.issue. Looking at what they've spent, nowhere near the top
:40:27. > :40:35.spenders, he's not had a chance to look at the players. It has not been
:40:36. > :40:39.the perfect preparation. He had almost a month to get in and look at
:40:40. > :40:44.the players. That is the key. He said he did not have enough time to
:40:45. > :40:48.see the players, hope they could add anything to the team. Then you've
:40:49. > :40:53.got to jump into the transfer system later than everybody else, it
:40:54. > :41:00.becomes a bit like panic buying. Unfortunately it is going to be a
:41:01. > :41:03.hard season for Sunderland. He knows that he is under pressure and if he
:41:04. > :41:08.does not get those results soon then he might not get the opportunity to
:41:09. > :41:13.spend money in January. That is the permanent problem of managers in
:41:14. > :41:17.clubs like this. Very much so. They've been a number of seasons in
:41:18. > :41:20.the same predicament, in the sense that they're down the bottom of the
:41:21. > :41:25.table, another dreadful start of the season. When you're down there, luck
:41:26. > :41:36.goes against you more often than not. The little things lead to
:41:37. > :41:40.goals, players are in a different space, you can carry on, but when
:41:41. > :41:44.you're down there, struggling, you concede a goal like that in the late
:41:45. > :41:48.stages of the game and it really affects confidence. Bottom of the
:41:49. > :41:55.table. Let's go to the Stadium of light and speak to Guy Mowbray.
:41:56. > :42:07.Sunderland have not won a game in August or September four years. It's
:42:08. > :42:11.incredible. It's down to stability. There's not been the right level of
:42:12. > :42:18.that at the club. Steve Bruce was the last manager to go a full season
:42:19. > :42:21.as Sunderland manager. Even David Moyes still feels because he's not
:42:22. > :42:33.been at the club for a long, a little bit short term. Last season
:42:34. > :42:37.you had previous manager who did not think he was going to be staying for
:42:38. > :42:42.longer and history tells us that was correct. They need stability. I hope
:42:43. > :42:46.they get it. I've got a real affection for this club. If this
:42:47. > :42:50.place takes off it will really take off but they cannot get everything
:42:51. > :42:56.in order for it to do so. What broke West Brom. You talk about Sunderland
:42:57. > :43:07.being reliant on Jermain Defoe. But at West Brom, Gudjohnsen is becoming
:43:08. > :43:16.one that they are reliant on. -- Rondon. Yes, he reminds me of John
:43:17. > :43:20.Carew. It took a season to settle in but now that he has, he is a huge
:43:21. > :43:28.player for them in every sense of the word. Sunderland have got to
:43:29. > :43:34.watch for. What this game right the way through to the end. Sunderland
:43:35. > :43:40.need a victory because they have four weeks without a home game after
:43:41. > :43:58.this one. If they win there will be a whole different feel. Coverage of
:43:59. > :44:04.this is that 4pm. Alan Shearer will be back tonight after his lie down.
:44:05. > :44:08.Straight after that you can watch the NFL show. That will work rather
:44:09. > :44:24.nicely for the NFL match on BBC Two. Former Manchester United defender
:44:25. > :44:30.Jaap Stam is in his first job, at Reading.
:44:31. > :44:39.15 year playing career, substantial trophy haul, linchpin of Manchester
:44:40. > :44:42.United's team, major tournament is, the question I ask, how have you
:44:43. > :44:48.enjoyed your first few months of management? I have enjoyed it. It is
:44:49. > :44:51.totally different, there are a lot of new things coming up when you're
:44:52. > :44:55.a manager over here, but it's very enjoyable. I want to work for a club
:44:56. > :45:01.with a lot of potential, and this one has ambition. That's what we've
:45:02. > :45:04.got here. The people at the training ground, in the stadium, everybody is
:45:05. > :45:12.willing to work together to get results. Up until now things are
:45:13. > :45:16.going well. Argue ambitious? If I was not I would be here. You want to
:45:17. > :45:22.get as high as you can, the top level of football it would be nice
:45:23. > :45:29.to work with the absolute top. I start here. Not for myself, to have
:45:30. > :45:33.a look, I start here to work with the club to get results and
:45:34. > :45:35.hopefully within a couple of seasons we can make a step to the Premier
:45:36. > :45:45.League. How much vetting did you have to do
:45:46. > :45:48.of Reading? When I spoke to the owners when there was interest, the
:45:49. > :45:51.conversation was very good. I told them I don't want to be a manager
:45:52. > :45:56.that comes within the club because of his name, what he has achieved as
:45:57. > :45:59.a player. Of course they have done their homework as well. I haven't
:46:00. > :46:04.been working with the first team in Holland, they knew what I did, where
:46:05. > :46:09.I was coaching, what my qualities were, so that was very important for
:46:10. > :46:12.me as well. Of course for myself it was important, can I express myself
:46:13. > :46:16.as a manager in the sense of can I play in the style of playing that I
:46:17. > :46:21.want to do, with the group, with the team? And they were very happy with
:46:22. > :46:25.that in me doing that. You do, I think you are modest, you have an
:46:26. > :46:29.aura, a reputation, is that something you can take into the
:46:30. > :46:34.dressing room? I don't want to like use my name or what I have done in
:46:35. > :46:38.my career, to like, impress players or whatever, I want to impress the
:46:39. > :46:43.players or the team in what I can do as a manager. Of course I can use my
:46:44. > :46:48.experience as a player on the group, and I am doing that as well, I am
:46:49. > :46:52.not constantly referring to when I was a player, we did this and when I
:46:53. > :46:57.played there, we did that, sometimes I have certain things you are using,
:46:58. > :47:01.you pick it out and explain to players in what you can do in
:47:02. > :47:05.certain time, moments and to the team, but not constantly. Will have
:47:06. > :47:11.do you keep in touch with the United people? No, not much, to be fair. Do
:47:12. > :47:15.you not? Not much. The years I have played football, the different teams
:47:16. > :47:18.I have played with, maybe I only have one friend left, they are all
:47:19. > :47:24.colleagues and if they go somewhere else, everything fades a bit. You
:47:25. > :47:29.only have one friend. From football. I wasn't in football to make
:47:30. > :47:33.friends, I was in football to, you know, to win trophy, to win prizes
:47:34. > :47:38.and to do well myself, so you get a lot of colleagues, but real friends
:47:39. > :47:42.are very hard to find as well. There was the sort of sour ending of your
:47:43. > :47:47.time at United, have you thought about what you will do when in
:47:48. > :47:53.diplomacy skills are needed, when respect is needed? There is lessons
:47:54. > :47:58.to be learned in how you deal with people who are no longer part of the
:47:59. > :48:01.jigsaw. Of course you are referring to the moment what happened at
:48:02. > :48:05.United with myself. If they came up to me and said, this and this is
:48:06. > :48:09.going on within the club there is a club came in and they put an offer
:48:10. > :48:13.in for you, we can sell you, we are thinking about doing this, OK, then
:48:14. > :48:18.I can make my decision as well, and what I want to do and it makes it
:48:19. > :48:22.easier than they have already made that decision for me, and you just
:48:23. > :48:26.hear it after that. For me at the time it was very hard, of course,
:48:27. > :48:30.you know but I still love United, I still love the people over there,
:48:31. > :48:36.the fan, the club, there is no like really bad feelings towards them.
:48:37. > :48:41.Are you still in quite good physical nick, if I tried to push you would
:48:42. > :48:45.you be able the stand firm. I am not suggesting I am going to try.
:48:46. > :48:50.Depends what state I am in, but it will thunderstorm his be hard. Thank
:48:51. > :48:55.you very much. Safe to say there is only one winner there, there are the
:48:56. > :48:58.career stats of Stam. He has a presence, and he is the guy when you
:48:59. > :49:02.say get your medals out he has something you listen to what he says
:49:03. > :49:06.because of what he has achieved. You do, like you say he has a lot of
:49:07. > :49:11.experience, he has won just about everything you can win, and he was
:49:12. > :49:14.an incredible defender, when he left United Sir Alex Ferguson said it was
:49:15. > :49:19.probably one of the mistakes he made while he was a manager to let him
:49:20. > :49:23.go, or to sell him because he was so formidable and important to the
:49:24. > :49:27.side. It took him a long time to replace him after that. You talked
:49:28. > :49:31.about that Ajax academy, that is where he learned the ropes, along
:49:32. > :49:36.with those many players you listed earlier. A lot of the Dutch players
:49:37. > :49:41.are prepared to go back and start at the bottom. Jimmy Hasselbaink went
:49:42. > :49:45.to Burton, other players do it round Europe, they are happy to start at
:49:46. > :49:52.the lower leagues and work their way up. He is intimidating, you know.
:49:53. > :49:56.Too right! A couple of glares at Clem and Clem shrunk about four or
:49:57. > :50:01.five inches. There are a few things to clear up. We do not want to say
:50:02. > :50:07.that he has his name tattooed on his knuckles, we put that on. He doesn't
:50:08. > :50:14.need to go... How scary does he look! Look at this. Our producer
:50:15. > :50:20.asked him if he wanted make up. Look how tenderly he is touching the
:50:21. > :50:22.scalp. He did a very good job. It is Reading who take on Darby today and
:50:23. > :50:27.Nigel Pearson has been suspended. Clem will be back on final score to
:50:28. > :50:33.talk about that and a few other managerial issues in the EFL. I
:50:34. > :50:36.wanted to talk to you both about a club you used to play for
:50:37. > :50:40.Middlesbrough who find themselves down in 16th place, in the Premier
:50:41. > :50:44.League at the moment. And they started the season OK, but last
:50:45. > :50:49.three games have been defeats. If you look at their next six matches,
:50:50. > :50:54.this could be a season defining time, couldn't it for Karanka and
:50:55. > :50:57.co-? It was going to be tough for them, no matter who they come up
:50:58. > :51:01.against, the first three games they were happy, I was at the game when
:51:02. > :51:05.they played West Brom away, it was a terrible game to watch but in the
:51:06. > :51:09.end Middlesbrough were the happier of the two getting a draw. You look
:51:10. > :51:13.at the next couple of game, they have struggled, and every game is a
:51:14. > :51:16.tough game. It doesn't matter who you are playing West Ham away or
:51:17. > :51:20.Manchester United -- Manchester City away, they are incredible tough. Let
:51:21. > :51:25.us go to West Ham. JP is at the London stadium for us today. We talk
:51:26. > :51:29.about Middlesbrough there with Mark, again, we most weeks we are saying
:51:30. > :51:34.they are a club with issues on and off the field. Certainly yes the
:51:35. > :51:38.manager said they needed to approach this game as calmly and
:51:39. > :51:42.professionally as they could do. It hasn't really happened for him this
:51:43. > :51:46.week. Allegations the player were misbehaving on a night out. Totally
:51:47. > :51:50.knocked down. They went out on those evenings last year, the Captain said
:51:51. > :51:53.it was a very good exercise to, for the players to vent their feelings
:51:54. > :51:59.about things that are going wrong on the field of play. Let us look at
:52:00. > :52:04.the one about Valencia, was that deal a kosheria deal? The club say
:52:05. > :52:07.yes, it was, allegations here that the stadium has teething problem,
:52:08. > :52:12.always bound to have teething problem, allegations here the
:52:13. > :52:18.stadium can't be atmospheric, I disagree. When it is noisy it is
:52:19. > :52:21.absolutely raucous, there will be problem, they will be erased in
:52:22. > :52:25.coming months but the fans of course will react when the form turns
:52:26. > :52:31.round, as it needs to be. They know that, this is their worst start
:52:32. > :52:37.since 2002. When they went down, they are attacking like thes offy
:52:38. > :52:41.Ardiles Tottenham attacking style. Very gung-ho, they need to learn to
:52:42. > :52:47.defend as an 11 to get things back on track. Great to talk to you,
:52:48. > :52:54.plenty more from JP on final score. I want to take you back to the
:52:55. > :52:57.table, because you were watching Watford against Burnley. Again, it
:52:58. > :53:01.is strange for Watford, because there has been times this season
:53:02. > :53:03.where they have been brilliant, like against Manchester United, what was
:53:04. > :53:08.the word used to December crime their performance at Burnley? They
:53:09. > :53:13.didn't turn up. They were pathetic almost. You expect certain things
:53:14. > :53:19.from Watford to be organised, to be strong, dynamic, I think we saw
:53:20. > :53:24.earlier, Deeney had their only real shot on target from outside the box.
:53:25. > :53:28.Ighalo never troubled the goalkeeper. We watched the game, it
:53:29. > :53:35.was like, where are Watford? What has happened? They must have got
:53:36. > :53:39.lost coming up the M1, or the M6. It was so unWatford-like it was untrue.
:53:40. > :53:45.They had no passion about them. That is a huge worry. Last season, you
:53:46. > :53:48.know, they got through on being calf leer, being aggressive, -- cavalier,
:53:49. > :53:56.that pace, power, they had none of it. It was a very easy evening for
:53:57. > :53:59.Burnley. They could have gone... You mentioned Steve Wilson, he is
:54:00. > :54:05.watching them take on Bournemouth. Eddie Howe has had one of those
:54:06. > :54:09.week, probably what is happening at England. Almost every other question
:54:10. > :54:13.was about potentially being the next England manager at some stage. Yes,
:54:14. > :54:18.of course it was, he dealt with it very well over the summer, when he
:54:19. > :54:22.was in contention and Sam Allardyce got the job, and he is having to
:54:23. > :54:25.deal with it all again, now, you know, I think if you look at it you
:54:26. > :54:29.probably would say at the ept o that Southgate is ahead of him in the
:54:30. > :54:33.pecking order because he has the four games to impress, and if he
:54:34. > :54:37.does well, then, clearly, he would be perhaps in poll position,
:54:38. > :54:40.certainly in a very good position, Arsene Wenger, of course, we don't
:54:41. > :54:45.know whether he is going to stay on at Arsenal beyond this season, if he
:54:46. > :54:52.doesn't he would be a very rat tracktive prospect for the FA. How
:54:53. > :55:00.things don't work out. You may remember that Steve McLaren got the
:55:01. > :55:04.job. If Wenger decides to stay at Arsenal, suddy Eddie Howe becomes a
:55:05. > :55:10.serious contender. People say he might be too young, he is older than
:55:11. > :55:15.Glenn Hoddle was when he got the job. I think there would be a tide
:55:16. > :55:19.of good feeling about Eddie how if he were to end up in that position,
:55:20. > :55:22.but there is a lot of football to be played between now and the end of
:55:23. > :55:26.the season and the FA are in no hurry. Much more pressing concern
:55:27. > :55:31.for Eddie Howe today, is to try and get the first away win for six
:55:32. > :55:35.months. Good point. Enjoy Vicarage Road, plenty more from Steve
:55:36. > :55:39.throughout the day. One game is the big one tomorrow as well. So let us
:55:40. > :55:43.look at the teams for the two unbeaten sides in the Premier
:55:44. > :55:47.League, so if Spurs taking on Manchester City. These are two sides
:55:48. > :55:52.they like a high press, this could be frenetic. It could be, you are
:55:53. > :55:56.right. They like to have a lot of possession, they like to press the
:55:57. > :56:01.opposition, so it is going to be an interesting game. Aguero is back, he
:56:02. > :56:05.was back last week, back to scoring goals, they can still win games
:56:06. > :56:10.without him, and for Tottenham, they have gone about their business, they
:56:11. > :56:14.have been under the radar for the fact the two Manchester clubs
:56:15. > :56:15.received a lot of the publicity and Tottenham are slowly coming into
:56:16. > :56:18.received a lot of the publicity and Tottenham are slowly coming into
:56:19. > :56:21.form. We talked about the fact that Manchester City have been impressive
:56:22. > :56:28.of late. Do you think against Celtic, that we saw a little bit,
:56:29. > :56:34.maybe of vulnerability. They were undone by a simple free-kick. We
:56:35. > :56:39.have to get it in perspective. It is not a disaster. Pep has drawn a
:56:40. > :56:44.game. Simple as that. I don't think it is sackable just yet. Going
:56:45. > :56:48.forward they are exceptional. They have had defensive frailties for a
:56:49. > :56:53.number of years, it will take time to address that, because they press
:56:54. > :56:57.very high up the pitch and they dominate possession, Celtic were the
:56:58. > :57:04.first team to not be in awe of them. They raised their gape, it was at
:57:05. > :57:07.home, at Celtic Park, they had a disastrous Champions League match.
:57:08. > :57:12.Celtic had to perform better they went out and threw caution to the
:57:13. > :57:16.wind. Maybe they caught Manchester City unaware. City, it would be a
:57:17. > :57:21.fantastic game, it could easily go either way. I have been impressed by
:57:22. > :57:25.City. I thought it might take pep longer to settle in, but what a
:57:26. > :57:31.started he has has. If the only criticism is he has drawn one game,
:57:32. > :57:35.in ten match, it is not too bad. Gentlemen, thank you very much. That
:57:36. > :57:40.is about it from us, we are back at midday next Saturday, with England
:57:41. > :57:43.due play Malta that afternoon, it would have been Sam Allardyce's
:57:44. > :57:46.first home game, instead we are left to reflect on one of the briefer
:57:47. > :57:49.managerial Raynes although not the briefest. From all of us, thanks for
:57:50. > :58:02.watching. I want theening cadge and I think I
:58:03. > :58:12.am tough enough. Bring it on lads. -- reigns.
:58:13. > :58:25.It is a very sad day for Leeds. It is lightly sad for football.
:58:26. > :58:28.You think you are going to go through your managerial career
:58:29. > :58:39.without getting sacked, then don't come in.
