0:01:18 > 0:01:20Hello and welcome to F1 Rewinds

0:01:20 > 0:01:23from the Donington Museum at Donington Park,

0:01:23 > 0:01:26with the globe's favourite commentator, Mr Murray Walker,

0:01:26 > 0:01:27the voice of Formula One.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30And today we're simply talking about amazing races.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33So, let's start in 1996

0:01:33 > 0:01:34and really, that year,

0:01:34 > 0:01:36it was all about the Williams, wasn't it?

0:01:36 > 0:01:39Yes, Williams dominated the season.

0:01:39 > 0:01:44Michael Schumacher was completing his first season with Ferrari,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48but Williams led, I think they won 11 races during the whole year

0:01:48 > 0:01:51and it was quite clear that the championship was going to be decided

0:01:51 > 0:01:53between Damon Hill,

0:01:53 > 0:01:56who had finished second to Michael Schumacher

0:01:56 > 0:01:58in the previous two years,

0:01:58 > 0:02:01and amazingly, Damon Hill's rookie team-mate,

0:02:01 > 0:02:03the French-Canadian, Jacques Villeneuve,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06who'd left American racing, come to Formula One,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09been an absolute sensation in his first season

0:02:09 > 0:02:13and had one Grand Prix, and could be winning the world championship.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Um, Damon Hill took the lead,

0:02:16 > 0:02:18but Jacques Villeneuve had a problem

0:02:18 > 0:02:21halfway through the race, roughly halfway through the race,

0:02:21 > 0:02:24the problem being that one of his rear wheels came off!

0:02:24 > 0:02:25That is a problem.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Which finished the race for him,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29finished the championship for him,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32but enabled Damon Hill, not to coast home,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35but to drive home and win the World Championship,

0:02:35 > 0:02:37something that his father, Graham, had done.

0:02:37 > 0:02:41And so Damon became the only world champion son

0:02:41 > 0:02:44of a world champion father.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47It was a very, very emotional occasion for him, Suzi,

0:02:47 > 0:02:50and it was certainly a very emotional occasion for me.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Well, I think we all remember your commentary at the end there

0:02:53 > 0:02:56and it was a great race. Here it is, then...

0:02:56 > 0:02:581996, Japan.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00ENGINES WHINING

0:03:10 > 0:03:12It's hard to imagine

0:03:12 > 0:03:14a more nerve-racking climax to this Formula One season

0:03:14 > 0:03:18and hard to imagine also the kind of demands it was making on Damon Hill.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21For the last three weeks, he'd known he needed

0:03:21 > 0:03:23just one single championship point

0:03:23 > 0:03:24from this Japanese Grand Prix

0:03:24 > 0:03:27to make absolutely certain of the title.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29He was also very conscious of the manner

0:03:29 > 0:03:31in which his team-mate and championship rival,

0:03:31 > 0:03:33Jacques Villeneuve, had reeled in

0:03:33 > 0:03:36his big mid-season championship lead.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Villeneuve couldn't be beaten in yesterday's qualifying,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41although Damon Hill, in the last seconds of the session,

0:03:41 > 0:03:43managed to get alongside him on the front row

0:03:43 > 0:03:46and that meant that Hill had been on the front row

0:03:46 > 0:03:47for every Grand Prix this season.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49An all-Williams front row then

0:03:49 > 0:03:52for the ninth time this season. Schumacher and Berger on row two,

0:03:52 > 0:03:54Hakkinen and Irvine on row three,

0:03:54 > 0:03:57and a fine qualifying performance from Heinz-Harald Frentzen,

0:03:57 > 0:04:00alongside David Coulthard on row four.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04Coulthard stalled a McLaren, so the first start was aborted.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08The tension was unbearable as they came to the line for the second time

0:04:08 > 0:04:11with Coulthard having to start from the back of the grid.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14The Japanese Grand Prix described by Tony Jardine,

0:04:14 > 0:04:16Jonathan Palmer and Murray Walker.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20MURRAY WALKER: Villeneuve on the right. Hill is on the left.

0:04:20 > 0:04:25The lights go out and the Japanese Grand Prix is...go!

0:04:25 > 0:04:27And it is go this time

0:04:27 > 0:04:30and a brilliant start by Damon Hill

0:04:30 > 0:04:32and Villeneuve has been passed.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34So, a terrible start for Jacques Villeneuve

0:04:34 > 0:04:37and Damon Hill is in front, but remember,

0:04:37 > 0:04:40and I'm not trying to be a Jeremiah,

0:04:40 > 0:04:43but Damon Hill did exactly this at Monza

0:04:43 > 0:04:45and out goes Jean Alesi.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49I don't know what the problem was in terms of somebody hitting him,

0:04:49 > 0:04:53but Jean Alesi is the first retirement in Japan.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Now, here's Alesi, this surely must be Alesi here.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57Look out for a car, there he is on the right-hand side,

0:04:57 > 0:05:00we didn't see how that started, but a big impact there,

0:05:00 > 0:05:02Alesi probably got...

0:05:02 > 0:05:05on a bit of a wheel-banging session with somebody.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07Yes, Alesi was ninth on the grid.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10He may well have had a tangle either with Martin Brundle

0:05:10 > 0:05:11or with Heinz-Harald Frentzen,

0:05:11 > 0:05:13who were respectively behind and in front of him.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17And there is Jacques Villeneuve and he's down in sixth position.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19So, he really has got it all to do

0:05:19 > 0:05:23and Damon Hill now is ahead of Gerhard Berger,

0:05:23 > 0:05:26so it's Williams leading, Benetton second, Hakkinen is in third place

0:05:26 > 0:05:29and we're riding with Jacques Villeneuve now.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32We're now going to see what Villeneuve can do.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35If there's anybody out there that can show us what determination

0:05:35 > 0:05:36in a great car can do,

0:05:36 > 0:05:40he knows that somehow he's got to try and get back up in front.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Damon has got to play it very cool indeed,

0:05:44 > 0:05:47as Gerhard Berger comes right up alongside him

0:05:47 > 0:05:50and goes over the kerb at the chicane, he was having a go there.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Damon Hill rebuffed him,

0:05:52 > 0:05:55but at the same time kept the Williams clear of the Benetton

0:05:55 > 0:05:58and look at the gap, he's pulled out as a result of Berger

0:05:58 > 0:06:01running over the kerb and that's given Mika Hakkinen

0:06:01 > 0:06:04the opportunity to close up a bit on the Benetton.

0:06:04 > 0:06:05Hill goes around, turn one,

0:06:05 > 0:06:09this is a 155mph corner on the entry.

0:06:09 > 0:06:10That is Gerhard Berger.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13Look at his wing! Look at his front wing!

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Gerhard Berger has got a wing problem.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18He's going to have to come in and change the nose

0:06:18 > 0:06:21and this is going to make things even better for Damon Hill.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24Let's have a look. there goes Berger up the inside,

0:06:24 > 0:06:25he tried that from a long way behind

0:06:25 > 0:06:28and it looked a bit of a half-hearted measure,

0:06:28 > 0:06:31that really was going to try and capitalise on the point I made

0:06:31 > 0:06:34and that's the fact that Hill was going to be very, very cautious,

0:06:34 > 0:06:37should that kind of thing happen. Into the pits comes Gerhard Berger,

0:06:37 > 0:06:39up to second goes Hakkinen,

0:06:39 > 0:06:42third goes Schumacher, fourth goes Irvine, fifth goes Villeneuve,

0:06:42 > 0:06:44sixth is Martin Brundle.

0:06:44 > 0:06:45Things looking very, very good indeed

0:06:45 > 0:06:48and it does look as if after all, Damon

0:06:48 > 0:06:51has got a very good chance of going out with a wonderful victory.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Oh, watch it, Jonathan! We've all said that.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58And again, Villeneuve has a look

0:06:58 > 0:07:01and this time, is he going through? Yes!

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Eddie Irvine defers to Jacques Villeneuve,

0:07:04 > 0:07:09who at last, from his point of view as he comes through on lap 12,

0:07:09 > 0:07:13has got past that roadblock in front of him,

0:07:13 > 0:07:15the V10 Ferrari of Eddie Irvine

0:07:15 > 0:07:19and we can expect Jacques Villeneuve now to pull away from Irvine,

0:07:19 > 0:07:24he's in...Villeneuve, therefore, is up into fourth position,

0:07:24 > 0:07:27three seconds behind Michael Schumacher.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Here's how it was done.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31So, he's up the inside, closing, breaking,

0:07:31 > 0:07:33pulling 3.5G right down to 30mph,

0:07:33 > 0:07:35locks the right front wheel momentarily.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Watch him running wide, he can't stop the car quite early enough,

0:07:38 > 0:07:40but just tucks it in to get to the apex.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42Beautifully executed manoeuvre.

0:07:42 > 0:07:45Villeneuve, as I suspected, is absolutely flying.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47He's now nearly a second faster than Damon Hill.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53And now, Villeneuve driving out of his skin,

0:07:53 > 0:07:57has closed right up on Michael Schumacher

0:07:57 > 0:08:00and comes in, ideally placed now.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03If the Williams team can get an absolutely super stop,

0:08:03 > 0:08:07Michael Schumacher could be up against it when he comes in.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Now, let's watch very carefully.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12Up go the hands when the...

0:08:15 > 0:08:18That's...there was a bit of delay there.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22That was not an ideal stop from Jacques Villeneuve's point of view.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25And he rejoins the pit,

0:08:25 > 0:08:29as coming through towards us is Gerhard Berger.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32Now, Berger is in tenth position,

0:08:32 > 0:08:37so, Jacques Villeneuve has rejoined in 11th place,

0:08:37 > 0:08:39that's not the end of the world, of course

0:08:39 > 0:08:42and out of the race has gone Pedro Diniz.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Villeneuve was slow. Why was he slow? Tony Jardine.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50As far as I could see the pit stop went extremely well,

0:08:50 > 0:08:52well-ordered, well-structured, well-disciplined,

0:08:52 > 0:08:54but when it was over,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57Villeneuve was actually held by the pit crew,

0:08:57 > 0:09:01the lollipop stayed down for an agonising extra couple of seconds,

0:09:01 > 0:09:03because one of the Jordans, Barrichello's Jordan,

0:09:03 > 0:09:07was coming down the pit lane at the same time, so they held him on.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Well, while Tony Jardine was talking,

0:09:09 > 0:09:11you saw Jacques Villeneuve there

0:09:11 > 0:09:16make an absolutely stupefying passing move on Gerhard Berger.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20And now, Villeneuve is up behind Olivier Panis,

0:09:20 > 0:09:22who is in seventh place.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25So, Villeneuve has really got the bit between his teeth.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28We're on lap 16 in this 52-lap race.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31Hill is leading Hakkinen by over five seconds,

0:09:31 > 0:09:34Schumacher is seven seconds behind Hill,

0:09:34 > 0:09:35Schumacher in third place,

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Irvine is fourth, Brundle is fifth, Frentzen is sixth,

0:09:38 > 0:09:39Panis is seventh,

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Villeneuve, that we are riding with, is in eighth place.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45He's not going to be there very much longer,

0:09:45 > 0:09:48because although that Mugen V10 engine in front of him

0:09:48 > 0:09:51has got colossal grunt, Villeneuve is the better driver

0:09:51 > 0:09:55and he proves it by passing Olivier Panis,

0:09:55 > 0:09:59as he had previously passed Gerhard Berger.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01Great stuff.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05That's Damon Hill.

0:10:05 > 0:10:06And...

0:10:06 > 0:10:08Oh, this is not good!

0:10:08 > 0:10:1011 seconds.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Whatever, that's not good.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16He had to wait for Eddie Irvine coming in ahead of him

0:10:16 > 0:10:18and you can see Damon Hill on the left

0:10:18 > 0:10:20and there is Michael Schumacher,

0:10:20 > 0:10:25and there behind is Mika Hakkinen and that is in fourth place.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Jacques Villeneuve. Wow.

0:10:27 > 0:10:32Now things are really, really getting hearty in Japan.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Tony Jardine has got news for us.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38We've just heard from Ann Bradshaw in the Williams pit

0:10:38 > 0:10:41that Jacques Villeneuve has a left rear puncture,

0:10:41 > 0:10:44so problems for Jacques Villeneuve and his championship challenge.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46And that is going to bring him down.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49Of course, he is currently in fourth position,

0:10:49 > 0:10:53he's 14 - nearly 15 - seconds ahead of Eddie Irvine,

0:10:53 > 0:10:56but coming in and losing time, going into the pit lane,

0:10:56 > 0:11:00stopping for some ten seconds also to get that left,

0:11:00 > 0:11:04that new rear wheel and tyre on and he's coming into the pit lane now

0:11:04 > 0:11:06and then having to speed up now.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09I'm going to watch for Eddie Irvine to go through in fifth position

0:11:09 > 0:11:14as you watch Jacques Villeneuve coming through the pit lane now.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16He's just opposite me.

0:11:16 > 0:11:21And Michael Schumacher is in the pit lane and so is Mika Hakkinen.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24And there is...

0:11:24 > 0:11:27one of the Arrows going past me,

0:11:27 > 0:11:29as out goes Mika Hakkinen

0:11:29 > 0:11:32and I still haven't seen Eddie Irvine go by.

0:11:34 > 0:11:35Well...

0:11:35 > 0:11:39that has made things phenomenally difficult for Jacques Villeneuve,

0:11:39 > 0:11:42who's coming out of the pit lane as I talk to you.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45You can see for yourself as he rejoins the track

0:11:45 > 0:11:48and coming towards him in the background...

0:11:48 > 0:11:49is Martin Brundle.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54And here is Damon Hill, race leader,

0:11:54 > 0:11:5825 seconds ahead of Michael Schumacher.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02He wants a cool, calm, collected, controlled pit stop,

0:12:02 > 0:12:04four new tyres and wheels,

0:12:04 > 0:12:06the right amount of fuel, which is premeasured

0:12:06 > 0:12:11and that looked like an absolutely immaculate stop for me,

0:12:11 > 0:12:14as Michael Schumacher here comes out

0:12:14 > 0:12:17and Damon Hill is going to rejoin, is he? Just in front of the Ferrari?

0:12:17 > 0:12:20Yes, he is!

0:12:20 > 0:12:22Damon Hill, lap 35,

0:12:22 > 0:12:26rejoins in the lead, ahead of Michael Schumacher.

0:12:26 > 0:12:30So, if any hope that the Ferrari team

0:12:30 > 0:12:34was that they would be able to pass Damon Hill in the pits,

0:12:34 > 0:12:36it has been destroyed

0:12:36 > 0:12:38and on lap 36,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41with Villeneuve now the fastest man on the track as we join him,

0:12:41 > 0:12:46a new fastest lap, 1:44.4,

0:12:46 > 0:12:513.4 seconds outside the all-time lap record of Nigel Mansell.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54And that is... Villeneuve! It's Villeneuve!

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Jacques Villeneuve is out of the race.

0:12:57 > 0:13:02Damon Hill is the World Champion of 1996.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05Wheel off Villeneuve. We'll see what happened,

0:13:05 > 0:13:09but whatever it was, has denied him the World Championship.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12Frank Williams looking his normally impassive self,

0:13:12 > 0:13:16but Damon Hill is the World Champion of 1996.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19He doesn't even have to finish the race.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21If he failed to finish the race,

0:13:21 > 0:13:24he would still be nine World Championship points

0:13:24 > 0:13:26ahead of Jacques Villeneuve

0:13:26 > 0:13:28and Tony Jardine knows what happened.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31Villeneuve had radioed in just before it happened

0:13:31 > 0:13:33and he said he felt the wheel loosening up.

0:13:33 > 0:13:37He didn't say it had fallen off, but he felt the wheel loosening up.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40There is a replay. We're going to see what happened.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42He felt the wheel loosening up

0:13:42 > 0:13:45and the result of it was he ran wide and wider,

0:13:45 > 0:13:47the wheel goes past him

0:13:47 > 0:13:48into the gravel trap.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Fortunately, it's hit...it goes over, over...into the crowd!

0:13:52 > 0:13:56Oh, my goodness. I do hope nobody was hurt with that.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58But back to Jacques Villeneuve.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02No words of mine can overemphasise

0:14:02 > 0:14:07what a brilliant season this young Canadian has had.

0:14:07 > 0:14:10So, on lap 40 in this 52-lap race,

0:14:10 > 0:14:14Hill leads Schumacher by just under three seconds,

0:14:14 > 0:14:19knowing that he's just got to pace himself to finish.

0:14:19 > 0:14:22And he'll ideally now want to win this race.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25He knows he's won the world championship. He will want

0:14:25 > 0:14:29to go out on the highest possible high by beating Michael Schumacher.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32And that's Andy Irvine spun off there.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34Irvine, who was right there alongside Gerhard Berger.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36Maybe they've had a coming together.

0:14:36 > 0:14:40It looks like Irvine is out of the race. Here's the replay.

0:14:40 > 0:14:45Irvine turns in. Berger is trying to get through on the inside.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47Irvine keeps his line.

0:14:47 > 0:14:51He's pushed out of the way and spun by Gerhard Berger,

0:14:51 > 0:14:53who drives across the apex.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57I'm always reluctant to ascribe responsibility,

0:14:57 > 0:15:00but, Jonathan, I'm sure you'll be delighted to do so.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03Well, I must say, I think Eddie Irvine did all he could.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05He understeered but then he came across.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07He was going to stay in the middle of the road.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10It looked like Berger was just too committed,

0:15:10 > 0:15:11too fast on the approach there,

0:15:11 > 0:15:14and just had too much speed to keep it tight.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18Williams have asked us to point out, incidentally,

0:15:18 > 0:15:22that when Jacques Villeneuve came in, complaining of a rear puncture,

0:15:22 > 0:15:25the inspection afterwards by his engineer

0:15:25 > 0:15:27revealed no puncture whatsoever.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31There is speculation here that's that was the start of the problems

0:15:31 > 0:15:35with the rear hub. That's what they're thinking at the moment.

0:15:35 > 0:15:40Damon Hill, starting his last lap in Japan,

0:15:40 > 0:15:45and now is the time to say that we are seeing history made,

0:15:45 > 0:15:52because Damon Hill is the son of the great Graham Hill,

0:15:52 > 0:15:57the world champion of 1962 and 1965,

0:15:57 > 0:16:02and never before in the history of Formula One Grand Prix racing

0:16:02 > 0:16:07has the son of a world champion become world champion himself.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10Damon Hill has already done that

0:16:10 > 0:16:13even if he doesn't complete the lap that he's on

0:16:13 > 0:16:20as he goes round turn seven, up to the unique crossover at Suzuka,

0:16:20 > 0:16:24which makes this circuit the way it is.

0:16:24 > 0:16:29And there are the teams in their blue and white

0:16:29 > 0:16:33London Rowing Club caps, matching the helmet of Damon Hill,

0:16:33 > 0:16:37which matches the helmet of his great father, Graham Hill.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39This is going to be a mighty emotional

0:16:39 > 0:16:44occasion for a lot of people, not the least of whom is myself.

0:16:44 > 0:16:48And Damon Hill will be concentrating in the cockpit there.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51But when he comes out of it, his arms will go up,

0:16:51 > 0:16:53the helmet will come off.

0:16:53 > 0:16:54That is his wife Georgie.

0:16:54 > 0:16:58She's seen her husband become world champion.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Now she's seeing him win the Japanese Grand Prix,

0:17:02 > 0:17:04because he is almost home.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06This is something that many people

0:17:06 > 0:17:08didn't think could possibly happen today.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11They thought Damon would drive a cautious race,

0:17:11 > 0:17:14but he fought from second on the grid.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18He passed Jacques Villeneuve, he took the lead, he stayed there

0:17:18 > 0:17:24and Damon Hill exits the chicane and wins the Japanese Grand Prix.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28And I've got to stop because I've got a lump in my throat.

0:17:31 > 0:17:35Michael Schumacher passes Damon Hill, but too late.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39Damon Hill wins in Japan.

0:17:39 > 0:17:44And he started this race nine points ahead of Jacques Villeneuve.

0:17:44 > 0:17:50The record will show that Damon Hill won the championship 19 points

0:17:50 > 0:17:53ahead of Jacques Villeneuve.

0:17:53 > 0:17:57NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS

0:17:59 > 0:18:02CHEERING Forgive us, please,

0:18:02 > 0:18:05in Australia, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand,

0:18:05 > 0:18:08everywhere else that's watching this,

0:18:08 > 0:18:13if we feel very emotional, because that's our boy.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17Damon Hill, world champion - what about that?

0:18:17 > 0:18:22It's just so fantastic. I can't tell you, Murray.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25I was driving along and I could hear you in my head - "Jacques out,

0:18:25 > 0:18:26"Murray's off."

0:18:26 > 0:18:30And it was quite a difficult job to concentrate after

0:18:30 > 0:18:31I heard that Jacques was out.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33But I wanted to win the race

0:18:33 > 0:18:36because I knew that was the best way to finish.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38Damon, I'm so happy for you.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40Not just because you're world champion,

0:18:40 > 0:18:44not just because you won the race, but because of the way you won it

0:18:44 > 0:18:47and the way you took the lead from the grid

0:18:47 > 0:18:49by passing Jacques Villeneuve.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51Well, I said I wanted to get ahead and that was the best

0:18:51 > 0:18:54way of ensuring that I won the championship. The best form

0:18:54 > 0:18:57of defence is attack, so I made a good start,

0:18:57 > 0:18:59which I was pleased about.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02And once I was in front I was determined to stay there.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06Wow, what a fabulous day that was for Damon and all his family.

0:19:06 > 0:19:10And very honest commentary from you, Murray, if I might say.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14Suzi, I've had the privilege of seeing Damon grow up.

0:19:14 > 0:19:19I've known his double world champion father, Graham, who'd

0:19:19 > 0:19:23actually been in the commentary box with me on several occasions.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27So it was very emotional for me when Damon won.

0:19:27 > 0:19:31And I remember that as he crossed the line, it all welled up

0:19:31 > 0:19:34and I said, and "I've got to stop now because

0:19:34 > 0:19:36"I've got a lump in my throat."

0:19:36 > 0:19:37And it really was true.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39And I wondered how Damon felt after that,

0:19:39 > 0:19:41because he was out of Williams, wasn't he?

0:19:41 > 0:19:44He'd won the world championship for them but no drive.

0:19:44 > 0:19:49It's well nigh beyond belief that having achieved

0:19:49 > 0:19:51world championship in 1996,

0:19:51 > 0:19:54he did so with the knowledge that he had already been

0:19:54 > 0:19:56fired by Williams

0:19:56 > 0:19:59because he'd had a not

0:19:59 > 0:20:04so good season, by their very high standards, in 1995.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07And Frank Williams made the decision that he was going to replace

0:20:07 > 0:20:10Damon Hill with Heinz-Harald Frentzen,

0:20:10 > 0:20:13a decision I ever wonder if he's regretted.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16Well, they had three world champions in succession, didn't they?

0:20:16 > 0:20:21That's right. Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost and now Damon Hill.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25OK, let's move forward now to a race that a lot of people still say

0:20:25 > 0:20:30is one of the favourite races - Canada 2011.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32Certainly the longest race of all time.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36Four hours, four minutes and 39.5 seconds of drama.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38Why was it that long?

0:20:38 > 0:20:41Basically, because the weather was absolutely terrible,

0:20:41 > 0:20:46as a result of which, they actually stopped the race for two

0:20:46 > 0:20:48whole hours and then started up again.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51And all sorts of things happened.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55But the amazing thing was that Jenson Button won the race

0:20:55 > 0:21:01notwithstanding the fact that he had six pit stops, took a penalty,

0:21:01 > 0:21:06he had a puncture, he drove into his team-mate and he passed

0:21:06 > 0:21:10Sebastian Vettel halfway through the last lap to win the race.

0:21:10 > 0:21:14It was real Boy's Own Paper stuff. It's really was, wasn't it?

0:21:14 > 0:21:16And with the duration, when they looked at his average speed,

0:21:16 > 0:21:21it was just 46.5mph and he won the Grand Prix.

0:21:21 > 0:21:26The slowest Grand Prix since 1906 probably! Let's take a look.

0:21:40 > 0:21:45There you see confirmation - the race will start behind the safety car.

0:21:45 > 0:21:49And the red lights are used as a countdown now to the start procedure.

0:21:49 > 0:21:50Vettel starts on pole from Alonso.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52Massa third, Webber fourth.

0:21:52 > 0:21:56So Red Bull, Ferrari, Ferrari, Red Bull at the front of the grid.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Hamilton and Rosberg fifth and sixth.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00Button seventh, Schumacher eight.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03So McLaren and Mercedes-Benz two by two there.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07Alguersuari starts at the end of the pit lane

0:22:07 > 0:22:11and he will be sitting there an awful long time.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13He put a full wet set-up on the car,

0:22:13 > 0:22:15but if he's starting at the back...

0:22:15 > 0:22:18and at least with the safety car situation...

0:22:18 > 0:22:20The race starts now.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22There is no formation lap.

0:22:22 > 0:22:25No rain at the moment and this looks like we're gearing up here.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28Vettell can control the pace now. The safety car is out the way

0:22:28 > 0:22:32so he dictates the pace from this point on. And he's gone early.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34He's gone early but Alonso's gone with him.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37There's no overtaking until they get to the first safety car line,

0:22:37 > 0:22:41which is there. And that is why a Alonso fancied a bit of a look.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43And Vettel's gone too deep into the corner.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45Alonso is right behind him still.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49So they could overtake into that final corner. And Vettell moves out.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51But so does Alonso. Alonso goes to the right.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54Vettell has the turning point in the corner, though.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56And behind we've got a McLaren.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59And he's touched! Webber is round.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01Mark Webber. And that's Lewis Hamilton.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03So Mark Webber keeps the engine running.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06He'll fall almost to the back of the field.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08And it was Hamilton getting right up the inside of him.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11He's always in the wars, is Lewis.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14This is a replay, on board with Lewis Hamilton.

0:23:14 > 0:23:19So Mark Webber... Gave him space. You're absolutely right.

0:23:19 > 0:23:23He gave him space and then Lewis just understeered into him.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25Michael getting off the braking,

0:23:25 > 0:23:27off the rubber on the way into that corner, but has a bit of a moment

0:23:27 > 0:23:30to lose Hamilton, who will be well positioned.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32As he comes out of the chicane in the rundown to turn ten.

0:23:32 > 0:23:35We saw him in the previous lap look down the outside of Michael.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37Let's see if he tries the same line again.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39Michael goes to the inside.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42Once again, Lewis gets wide, and Michael comes across.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46You can see he's pushed Lewis wide. Lewis will lose out to Button.

0:23:46 > 0:23:51Webber and Hamilton under investigation for that first corner.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53Will Lewis Hamilton get another drive-through penalty?

0:23:53 > 0:23:56What do you think? Well, I think in that case, there's no question.

0:23:56 > 0:24:00The McLarens touched! That is...

0:24:00 > 0:24:03Well, Lewis Hamilton obviously with suspension damage, puncture.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06I'd be surprised if he makes it round back into the pits,

0:24:06 > 0:24:08but the problem in those conditions

0:24:08 > 0:24:10is Jenson Button can't see in his mirrors.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13There's so much spray coming off the front axle that any visibility

0:24:13 > 0:24:15you have is just cancelled.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17This is just incredible.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20Lewis just seems to be touching with Mark, touching with Michael.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22Well, almost touching with Michael,

0:24:22 > 0:24:24and then getting together with his team-mate.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27Will there be a safety car? It's a suspension broken, isn't it?

0:24:27 > 0:24:28No, it's just a wheel rim, isn't it?

0:24:28 > 0:24:30It looks like he went against the pit wall.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33Let's hear what Jenson thought.

0:24:33 > 0:24:34'What was he doing?'

0:24:34 > 0:24:37I think he was trying to pass you, Jenson.

0:24:37 > 0:24:38But Jenson, obviously as you say,

0:24:38 > 0:24:41you can see nothing out of those mirrors. They're about...

0:24:41 > 0:24:43Safety car out. Safety car is out.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46I would imagine because of the debris on the pit straight.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49Button in the pits. He's coming in under safety car.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53Jenson Button coming in, maybe for checks on his car to get the replay.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56So Lewis comes off the last chicane much, much faster.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59Jenson is making his way on what is the normal line.

0:24:59 > 0:25:03It was the merest of touches, wasn't it, actually?

0:25:03 > 0:25:05Well, Lewis will say "He should have seen me coming."

0:25:05 > 0:25:08He was slow off the corner. Intermediate tyres, were they not?

0:25:08 > 0:25:09Going on the McLaren there.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12So Button, then, the first man on to the inters.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14Here's another replay of the contact.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17He's right up in behind there, probably employing kerbs.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20Then at that point, when he committed, the gap just reduced.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23There'll be an interesting debate between the drivers as to who

0:25:23 > 0:25:25was in the right and who was in the wrong.

0:25:25 > 0:25:26Safety car is in this lap.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28How do you judge whether you're going to catch

0:25:28 > 0:25:29the safety car or not? There it is.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32It's a really tough one, but he's got it right this time.

0:25:32 > 0:25:33Alonso is not as close,

0:25:33 > 0:25:35as long as he slows down at the right point for the corner.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37Alonso is not challenging quite...

0:25:37 > 0:25:40Michael Schumacher trying to come up the inside of Nico Rosberg

0:25:40 > 0:25:42and gets away with it. Yeah, but pointless to do that.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45He's not allowed to overtake until the start-finish line.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47He can overtake on that first safety car line, for sure.

0:25:47 > 0:25:52Red Bull leads Ferrari, Ferrari, then the two Mercedes of Rosberg

0:25:52 > 0:25:54and Michael Schumacher.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57Button 12th and under investigation.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02A drive-through penalty for car four - Jenson Button -

0:26:02 > 0:26:04who is just in front of Paul di Resta -

0:26:04 > 0:26:07sorry Sutil, there.

0:26:07 > 0:26:08In fact, that was.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11He's past di Resta somewhere, so it was di Resta.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15So, Button has really made some gains in this lap, but he's got

0:26:15 > 0:26:21a drive-through penalty for this safety-car speed-limit issue.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23That means that... What will that cost him?

0:26:23 > 0:26:26About 20 seconds to just cruise through the pit lane.

0:26:26 > 0:26:27He's got to do it within three laps.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29Yeah, it'll be less than that, Martin.

0:26:29 > 0:26:32About 12 seconds it'll cost him. It's the time through the pit lane.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34That will bring him back out...

0:26:34 > 0:26:38Well, probably down in about 16th place, I would imagine.

0:26:38 > 0:26:39Maybe even further down than that.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42Yeah, so Jenson is doing 62mph as they're

0:26:42 > 0:26:46doing about 180 down the pit straight. It's a long run.

0:26:46 > 0:26:50It's a very unusual pit lane here where you feed into turn two,

0:26:50 > 0:26:52not into the first corner.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55He goes around the outside, slots in very nicely.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57Look how hard it's raining, David.

0:26:57 > 0:26:58It is now, yeah.

0:26:58 > 0:27:00Surely Jenson is going to start struggling now.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04You've got heavy spray coming up, and some aquaplaning.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06We've got a safety car out.

0:27:06 > 0:27:12So safety car is deployed. Haven't seen any incidents at the moment.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16Fernando Alonso pitting under the safety car, so he's first to blink.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19Going back to wets, presumably. Yeah, indeed he will.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23But this is working out pretty well for Sebastian Vettel.

0:27:23 > 0:27:27Button does indeed pit. Well, that was short-lived.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30So by not reacting too quickly, Vettel

0:27:30 > 0:27:34and Massa, Kobayashi up front, it's all worked out beautifully for them.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38There's so much water. You cannot restart the race like this.

0:27:38 > 0:27:42For the first car, it is already too dangerous.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44For the car behind, he doesn't see anything.

0:27:44 > 0:27:46Blind he goes into the water,

0:27:46 > 0:27:49aquaplanes and smashes the car.

0:27:49 > 0:27:56So it is a red-flag situation. The race is effectively suspended.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58They're not allowed to go in the pit lane,

0:27:58 > 0:27:59otherwise they'll take a penalty.

0:27:59 > 0:28:03The cars can be worked on on the grid.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07They have to go to pole position and line up in race order

0:28:07 > 0:28:08when they get underway.

0:28:08 > 0:28:13That's a total red-flag period of two hours and four minutes.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18The safety car, then, has pulled away.

0:28:18 > 0:28:24We are back in racing conditions here on the Ile Notre Dame

0:28:24 > 0:28:27in the St Lawrence Seaway on the outskirts of Montreal.

0:28:29 > 0:28:33So Vettel then takes over and becomes the safety car, effectively

0:28:33 > 0:28:36controlling the pace of the pack, got them all backed up at the hip.

0:28:36 > 0:28:40It's so easy to run into another driver in those circumstances

0:28:40 > 0:28:43while you're trying to keep your tyres and brakes warm.

0:28:43 > 0:28:45Vettel's bolted. He's going for it.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47He doesn't want Kobayashi anywhere near him

0:28:47 > 0:28:50as they arrive at the first safety car line.

0:28:50 > 0:28:52Massa is closer to Kobayashi. Spray not too bad.

0:28:52 > 0:28:57Petrov on the right-hand side of the track for Renault.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00He's fighting off Paul di Resta who is down the outside.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02Massa so close to Kobayashi.

0:29:03 > 0:29:07So a long wait for the safety car to get out of the way.

0:29:07 > 0:29:08Now the drivers are saying the track is so dry

0:29:08 > 0:29:12I'd like a set of intermediates, please, as Button pits as well.

0:29:12 > 0:29:13Another string of them -

0:29:13 > 0:29:14Heidfeld, di Resta, Button,

0:29:14 > 0:29:21de la Rosa, Alguersuari, Maldonado fancy the other tyres as well.

0:29:21 > 0:29:23Off Button goes down the pit lane.

0:29:24 > 0:29:26We've got a Ferrari off.

0:29:26 > 0:29:30Fernando Alonso's beached the Ferrari.

0:29:30 > 0:29:33Where is that? That's the second chicane.

0:29:33 > 0:29:37Yeah, it's in turn three, I think. Am I seeing that correctly?

0:29:37 > 0:29:40I think that's... Yeah, that's exit of three, four.

0:29:40 > 0:29:42Yeah, three and four. Safety car has been deployed -

0:29:42 > 0:29:46our favourite car of the day gets another look in to this race.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49Button's got a puncture. Yeah, left-front.

0:29:49 > 0:29:50I wonder if there was contact.

0:29:50 > 0:29:53They shouldn't have been so close on the road, should they?

0:29:53 > 0:29:55Button, McLaren's...

0:29:55 > 0:29:57Vettel has pitted.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00I wonder if Jenson Button

0:30:00 > 0:30:03and Fernando Alonso got together somewhere.

0:30:03 > 0:30:07Vettel again making the best of some free space at the front.

0:30:07 > 0:30:11It just all keeps falling into place for Red Bull.

0:30:11 > 0:30:15Let's have look at this. Yes, it was Button up the inside of Alonso.

0:30:15 > 0:30:21Alonso didn't want to yield. Contact.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24That's Jenson's second contact of the afternoon.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27Jenson up the inside of Fernando.

0:30:27 > 0:30:29Fernando says you're not coming through there,

0:30:29 > 0:30:31and Jenson says well, you watch this.

0:30:31 > 0:30:33I am coming through.

0:30:33 > 0:30:37We're going to have to call that a racing incident.

0:30:37 > 0:30:41The McLaren of Button is in the pits.

0:30:41 > 0:30:44It's four pit stops and a drive-through for Button

0:30:44 > 0:30:50for exceeding the speed limit behind the safety car early on.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52Safety car will come in this lap.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54Jenson Button is way out back at the moment.

0:30:55 > 0:31:01Vettel bolts once more Kobayashi asleep once more, but Massa is not.

0:31:01 > 0:31:02Massa is right with him.

0:31:02 > 0:31:05To remind you, when they get to the safety car line,

0:31:05 > 0:31:07they can start doing some overtaking.

0:31:07 > 0:31:09But Kobayashi has laid it up on the brakes.

0:31:09 > 0:31:13Heidfeld looking pretty punchy behind Massa, as well.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16Lots of action going on down the field, but once again, it's the

0:31:16 > 0:31:20world champion and the championship leader, Sebastian Vettel,

0:31:20 > 0:31:22who clears the line.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25Jenson Button has just about caught the back of the snake

0:31:25 > 0:31:27as he crosses the line.

0:31:27 > 0:31:29Webber well out of shape on the outside.

0:31:29 > 0:31:33Michael Schumacher then at turn 11 just cruises past Mark Webber.

0:31:33 > 0:31:36Too hot on the throttle.

0:31:36 > 0:31:40Michael Schumacher takes over sixth place there from Mark Webber.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43Di Resta up the inside.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46Damaged front wing.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48Paul, you've broken the front wing there.

0:31:48 > 0:31:52This is Massa side by side with Kobayashi for second place.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55Michael Schumacher looks like he's gone past the pair of them.

0:31:55 > 0:32:01Lots of action. Absolutely wild oversteer there.

0:32:01 > 0:32:04Schumacher has passed Massa and Kobayashi.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07Schumacher absolutely flying. Brilliant driving.

0:32:07 > 0:32:10This is where it all went wrong for Kobayashi -

0:32:10 > 0:32:13he's gone wide in turn eight, contact there with Massa.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16Michael Schumacher sneaks up the inside

0:32:16 > 0:32:19while they're busy watching each other and takes second place.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22Not much that Kobayashi could do other than get back on the track.

0:32:22 > 0:32:24That just allows Michael the momentum.

0:32:24 > 0:32:27He would have been grinning inside that helmet.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29Wunderbar. Yeah.

0:32:29 > 0:32:33That then is Button, who presumably has just pitted for slicks.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35That's Jenson's sixth trip through the pits today,

0:32:35 > 0:32:38five times to change his tyres.

0:32:38 > 0:32:42We've got a damaged nose front wing there of Felipe Massa,

0:32:42 > 0:32:46as Mark Webber goes through and is setting fastest sector

0:32:46 > 0:32:49after fastest sector, cars off all over the place,

0:32:49 > 0:32:52as they're trying to find grip on their tyres.

0:32:52 > 0:32:57The race leader pits for a fresh set of super-soft tyres.

0:32:57 > 0:33:02Here we are on the exit of turn seven. He gets out on the water.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05Of course, on the slick tyres, he's just aquaplaned.

0:33:05 > 0:33:06That was him trying to get past.

0:33:10 > 0:33:12He's broken his front wing.

0:33:12 > 0:33:16It's like none of these guys know where their front wing is.

0:33:16 > 0:33:19Oh. Right. There's a surprise.

0:33:19 > 0:33:22Thankfully there's plenty of run off down there.

0:33:22 > 0:33:25He parks it nicely out the way, so I don't expect any safety car

0:33:25 > 0:33:28unless there's some debris on the track.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30It's Nick Heidfeld. He got on the throttle.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33He got so much grip from that Renault in the slow corners.

0:33:33 > 0:33:35He just plain ran into the back of him.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38That was a little bit scary, but thankfully

0:33:38 > 0:33:41one of the areas on the track where there is a run-off area.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43Massively frustrating for the Renault guys,

0:33:43 > 0:33:45because they were looking for a good result here this weekend.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47But once again we're back with a battle with

0:33:47 > 0:33:49Mark Webber, Michael Schumacher.

0:33:49 > 0:33:52But can he get off line to go past?

0:33:52 > 0:33:56Look at Button catching them like crazy.

0:33:56 > 0:33:57He's P4 now.

0:33:57 > 0:33:58Button on a 20.2.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01He's two seconds quicker than the leader, Vettel.

0:34:01 > 0:34:07Bit of traffic ahead of him with d'Ambrosio in the Virgin.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09Jenson has got to tiptoe so carefully off the racing

0:34:09 > 0:34:14line as they see the yellow flags so easy to pick up a puncture.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16It is. Normally that would be enough for them

0:34:16 > 0:34:20to throw a safety car for fear of...

0:34:20 > 0:34:22And we have. We've got a safety car out.

0:34:23 > 0:34:28Sebastian Vettel leads the restart for the fourth time this afternoon.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32DRS is not enabled at this time Schumacher down the outside.

0:34:32 > 0:34:35Yellow flags waving for some reason -

0:34:35 > 0:34:38presumably because the safety car was still in range,

0:34:38 > 0:34:40but green flags now.

0:34:40 > 0:34:42Away they go.

0:34:42 > 0:34:44Button has cleared the back marker.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47Webber again all over the back of Michael Schumacher.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50This is going to be a titanic scrap, isn't it?

0:34:50 > 0:34:52We saw Michael, was it last year?

0:34:52 > 0:34:55Where he just knocked the front wing... Mark Webber misses a corner.

0:34:55 > 0:34:57Oh! He's nearly lost it.

0:34:57 > 0:35:01Webber... Button sails past him, somehow finding enough grip.

0:35:01 > 0:35:04Mark Webber pushing his luck.

0:35:04 > 0:35:05Yellow flags waving in turn one,

0:35:05 > 0:35:08but Button had the move done well before then.

0:35:08 > 0:35:12Webber drops back to fourth place. Vettel leads Schumacher by 3.8

0:35:12 > 0:35:14from Jenson Button.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17Webber got in too hot, took the escape road,

0:35:17 > 0:35:21did not gain a place, but nearly dropped it through the exit.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25Jenson said, "I'll have some of that, thank you. I'm out of here."

0:35:25 > 0:35:28Now it's Jenson chasing down Michael Schumacher.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31If he's within one second as he exits this corner,

0:35:31 > 0:35:34that line now, he gets the advantage of the rear wing.

0:35:34 > 0:35:38It'll pop open when they go over this next line.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41Surely he's got a great chance of coasting past whilst

0:35:41 > 0:35:43Schumacher is looking in his mirror.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46Button goes the long way round. Is he ahead of him? Yes, he is!

0:35:46 > 0:35:49Button up into second place. He's got the pass done.

0:35:49 > 0:35:51Look at the difference in the speed

0:35:51 > 0:35:53when you've got DRS in the slipstream.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56Button is absolutely flying.

0:35:56 > 0:36:02He's 1.3 seconds quicker halfway around the current lap.

0:36:02 > 0:36:05Vettel is going to really have to show us what he's got now.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07Vettel's done a personal best -

0:36:07 > 0:36:09first and second sector.

0:36:09 > 0:36:11He's miles slower than that man -

0:36:11 > 0:36:13second place, Jenson Button -

0:36:13 > 0:36:15who loves these conditions.

0:36:15 > 0:36:20Vettel watching in the mirror, the rear wing close.

0:36:20 > 0:36:22In the background, Schumacher defending hard

0:36:22 > 0:36:23against Webber.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26Schumacher defending incredibly hard. Webber's through.

0:36:26 > 0:36:27Webber's through.

0:36:27 > 0:36:30Can he keep it on the road this time? He does indeed.

0:36:30 > 0:36:32Schumacher drops down to fourth place.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35I think he came across the run-off area.

0:36:35 > 0:36:37Schumacher fourth, Webber third, Button -

0:36:37 > 0:36:39a new fastest lap of the race, 1:17.5.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41The gap down to 1.3.

0:36:41 > 0:36:46Schumacher there once again without the rear wing and without...

0:36:46 > 0:36:49He did go across the escape road, actually, but he does not have

0:36:49 > 0:36:52to yield anything on that one, he lost a place anyway.

0:36:52 > 0:36:54What's the gap as they go over the line?

0:36:54 > 0:36:57Vettel lead as he goes into the final lap by 0.9 of a second.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00Button, a 1:16.9 - the new fastest lap of the race.

0:37:00 > 0:37:04Jenson Button driving for his life, driving for the victory.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07Has Vettel got what it takes to hold him off?

0:37:07 > 0:37:10What else is happening - they're coming up in a pack of five cars.

0:37:10 > 0:37:13Remember Monaco, what happened there? They're coming up on Trulli

0:37:13 > 0:37:16and a whole pack of cars which are going five-seconds-a-lap slower.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19So look out for them just in front of them.

0:37:19 > 0:37:21I think Vettel has gone wide. He's gone wide!

0:37:21 > 0:37:24He turned in too late! Button leads the Grand Prix.

0:37:24 > 0:37:29Sebastian Vettel turned in with his tyres just touching the water.

0:37:29 > 0:37:31It's the final lap of the Grand Prix.

0:37:31 > 0:37:35Jenson Button, after an awful afternoon with so many things

0:37:35 > 0:37:40going wrong for him, leads this amazing Canadian Grand Prix.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43He set the fastest first sector of the Grand Prix

0:37:43 > 0:37:47while he was doing it. We see Vettel finally cracking.

0:37:47 > 0:37:49He's made a mistake.

0:37:49 > 0:37:51He is still going to finish second.

0:37:51 > 0:37:54That means he has never been outside the top two this year.

0:37:54 > 0:37:57But Sebastian Vettel finally shows he's human

0:37:57 > 0:38:02because of the pressure that this man, Jenson Button, put on him.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04All sorts going off in the final chicane here,

0:38:04 > 0:38:07but they're out of Button's way. Lots of traffic.

0:38:07 > 0:38:12Jenson Button into the pit straight. He wins a brilliant race.

0:38:12 > 0:38:16It's a sensational drive for Button. What a victory.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19Vettel limps home in second place.

0:38:19 > 0:38:21He'll be angry with himself, it's unlike him.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25Brilliant, Jenson. Absolutely brilliant.

0:38:25 > 0:38:28I think we've been in every position in that race,

0:38:28 > 0:38:29but we finished where it mattered.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31Fantastic. Great job, mate.

0:38:31 > 0:38:34JENSON LAUGHS

0:38:34 > 0:38:36Guys! That was a hell of a race.

0:38:36 > 0:38:40A hell of a race. Thank you so much. Fantastic win.

0:38:40 > 0:38:45We deserved that for the race we've had. Thank you, guys, so much.

0:38:45 > 0:38:46It's been a long time coming.

0:38:48 > 0:38:53Well, hard work for Jenson Button, but it certainly paid off, didn't it?

0:38:53 > 0:38:57What it proved was that if you keep pressuring the bloke in front,

0:38:57 > 0:39:02he may make a mistake. That was Jenson's real hope.

0:39:02 > 0:39:05He really maintained that pressure on Sebastian Vettel,

0:39:05 > 0:39:08who made what turned out to be a fatal error,

0:39:08 > 0:39:10from the point of view of winning the race.

0:39:10 > 0:39:15He just moved a bit to the side and boom, Jenson was through,

0:39:15 > 0:39:18took the lead, won the race, absolutely brilliant.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21He's always such a popular winner, Jenson, isn't he?

0:39:21 > 0:39:24Well, rightly so, cos he's such a popular bloke.

0:39:24 > 0:39:27He's a lovely bloke, one of the nicest people there's ever

0:39:27 > 0:39:29been in Formula One in my opinion.

0:39:30 > 0:39:32He very richly deserved the win.

0:39:32 > 0:39:35Let's move forward, now, to Bahrain 2014.

0:39:35 > 0:39:37This was really all about the Mercedes boys.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40We'd had a Nico Rosberg win at the opener in Australia.

0:39:40 > 0:39:43Lewis had won the second race in Malaysia.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46But this one really did set up their rivalry, didn't it?

0:39:46 > 0:39:53It's worth remembering that 2014 was the first year of a new formula -

0:39:53 > 0:39:54the hybrid formula,

0:39:54 > 0:39:58where we've got these very, very complicated power units.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00Mercedes were in their fifth year

0:40:00 > 0:40:03of trying to come good in Formula One.

0:40:03 > 0:40:07My goodness, it was the season they turned out to dominate.

0:40:07 > 0:40:11But what really impressed me about Bahrain was it demonstrated

0:40:11 > 0:40:14what a great driver Nico Rosberg is.

0:40:14 > 0:40:18There had been some doubts in the past about just how good he was,

0:40:18 > 0:40:21we'd seen him race against Michael Schumacher

0:40:21 > 0:40:25and beat the great German, but now he fought every inch of the way,

0:40:25 > 0:40:27constantly trying to get past Lewis Hamilton.

0:40:27 > 0:40:29He never actually quite succeeded.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32But if trying was the name of the game,

0:40:32 > 0:40:33he would have won.

0:40:33 > 0:40:36It was an absolutely brilliant race

0:40:36 > 0:40:39which had us on the edge of our seats

0:40:39 > 0:40:41and restored a lot of people's faith in Formula One.

0:40:41 > 0:40:45Yes, because a lot of people at that time had been having a bit of a go,

0:40:45 > 0:40:47including Luca di Montezemolo who, at the time,

0:40:47 > 0:40:48was president at Ferrari.

0:40:48 > 0:40:51Who said that Formula One now was taxi-driving.

0:40:51 > 0:40:55Pfft! There wasn't any taxi-driving in Bahrain, was there?

0:40:55 > 0:40:57It was belting wheel-to-wheel action. Let's have a look.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13So, let's take a look, then, at the grid.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16It is Nico Rosberg with back-to-back poles in Bahrain,

0:41:16 > 0:41:19and Hamilton alongside him for his 60th front-row start.

0:41:19 > 0:41:23Bottas and Perez both matching their best-ever grid positions,

0:41:23 > 0:41:25both of them looking for a first podium.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28Raikkonen lines up in fifth place, with Jenson Button,

0:41:28 > 0:41:30his best grid position this year, alongside.

0:41:30 > 0:41:32Felipe Massa in the second Williams,

0:41:32 > 0:41:34his best starting spot of the year too.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37Magnussen starting in the same place as he did in Malaysia.

0:41:37 > 0:41:38Then Alonso in ninth place,

0:41:38 > 0:41:41then Sebastian Vettel in tenth. That's quite some fifth row.

0:41:41 > 0:41:43Hulkenberg starts behind them,

0:41:43 > 0:41:45Daniil Kvyat, the Russian in 12.

0:41:45 > 0:41:48Then it's Daniel Ricciardo with his penalty,

0:41:48 > 0:41:50but potentially a fast car,

0:41:50 > 0:41:52and Jean-Eric Vergne who lines up next.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55Who's going to blaze to glory in the desert night?

0:41:55 > 0:41:57We're about to find out.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59Lights out! Away we go.

0:41:59 > 0:42:01Who's it going to be off the front row?

0:42:01 > 0:42:04Rosberg trying to cover, Hamilton up on the inside.

0:42:04 > 0:42:06Bottas making a good start.

0:42:06 > 0:42:08Hamilton's got a good start

0:42:08 > 0:42:11and he's going to lead, I think, into the first corner.

0:42:11 > 0:42:13What a crucial getaway for Lewis Hamilton,

0:42:13 > 0:42:15as Massa makes an excellent start.

0:42:15 > 0:42:17Massa is the first of the two Williams.

0:42:17 > 0:42:21He's gone past Perez, riding on board here with Jenson Button.

0:42:21 > 0:42:24Now, look, the battle up front.

0:42:24 > 0:42:27Rosberg trying to come round the outside of Lewis Hamilton!

0:42:27 > 0:42:28Oh, they almost touch!

0:42:28 > 0:42:31We just lose sight of them for a moment

0:42:31 > 0:42:34but they both managed to get away with it, Hamilton in front.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37It's so crucial to have that lead advantage.

0:42:37 > 0:42:41Question for you. If Rosberg had had somebody else on his inside,

0:42:41 > 0:42:44would he be more aggressive coming across here?

0:42:44 > 0:42:47You've got to not treat your team-mate any differently.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50The rules of combat are you don't make contact with any car.

0:42:50 > 0:42:51You can damage your own.

0:42:51 > 0:42:55You can see there, Nico Rosberg just being driven off the track

0:42:55 > 0:42:57by Lewis Hamilton. He's saying, "We may be old karting buddies

0:42:57 > 0:43:00"but I want this Grand Prix and I want this championship",

0:43:00 > 0:43:04so gloves are off. Now, here he goes for the outside.

0:43:04 > 0:43:06This is a place where some guys have been able to overtake,

0:43:06 > 0:43:10but Lewis says, "Yeah, I'm using all the road, Nico. Forget it!

0:43:10 > 0:43:11"This is my corner."

0:43:11 > 0:43:15'So, remember, Nico, we have the alternative strategy

0:43:15 > 0:43:18'which we'll be going for, which means you need to go longer

0:43:18 > 0:43:20'on this first stint, looking after the tyres.'

0:43:20 > 0:43:23I wonder if they're going to do different strategies

0:43:23 > 0:43:26between the two cars, or whether they'll both follow the same.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29We'll have to wait and see exactly. Hamilton has the advantage.

0:43:29 > 0:43:33Perez on Massa, so these two are fighting for third place now.

0:43:33 > 0:43:36And Felipe Massa... Bottas has very little grip left.

0:43:36 > 0:43:38There's no answer, I don't think,

0:43:38 > 0:43:40and Perez is going to take the place. He does.

0:43:40 > 0:43:44Up into third place goes Sergio Perez for Force India.

0:43:44 > 0:43:47Oh, and pulling over is Adrian Sutil.

0:43:47 > 0:43:49It's been a miserable weekend...

0:43:49 > 0:43:51He's missing something on his rear tyre.

0:43:51 > 0:43:53There's no marking on that left rear.

0:43:53 > 0:43:57So has he rubbed up against something before...pitting?

0:43:57 > 0:43:59That's unusual. Was there contact here?

0:43:59 > 0:44:02Let's take a look. He's dicing with Jules Bianchi.

0:44:02 > 0:44:03Side by side...

0:44:03 > 0:44:07This is where the yellow line's going to disappear.

0:44:07 > 0:44:10That was a great spot, David! Absolutely brilliant.

0:44:10 > 0:44:12Bianchi and Sutil came together.

0:44:12 > 0:44:15I have a five-year-old. I do a lot of colouring in!

0:44:15 > 0:44:18Take another look at... Oh, my goodness!

0:44:18 > 0:44:21Was that after? That was after. Yeah.

0:44:22 > 0:44:24Look at this! Side by side.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27You're looking at the battle. Rosberg's got past Lewis Hamilton...

0:44:27 > 0:44:31No, he hasn't! Hamilton retakes it. Wonderful racing up front

0:44:31 > 0:44:33between the two Mercedes team-mates.

0:44:33 > 0:44:34Not only did he retake it,

0:44:34 > 0:44:37that is the equivalent of a slap in the face

0:44:37 > 0:44:40as he cut across the front wing of Rosberg.

0:44:40 > 0:44:42'Warn him. That was not on!'

0:44:44 > 0:44:48I couldn't interpret that. He said, "Warn him. That was not on." OK.

0:44:48 > 0:44:50But what we have to say is, "Thank you, Mercedes Grand Prix,

0:44:50 > 0:44:53"for allowing your men to go wheel-to-wheel."

0:44:53 > 0:44:55Down the inside into turn one,

0:44:55 > 0:44:57Lewis gives him the corner

0:44:57 > 0:45:00and sets it up to do the cutback, which he does do,

0:45:00 > 0:45:03and then it's the fact he squeezed across the front of Rosberg.

0:45:03 > 0:45:05We're going to see it from Nico's point of view.

0:45:05 > 0:45:09He goes down the inside, now look for Lewis appearing on the right.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11As he does, he has to take avoiding action.

0:45:11 > 0:45:13That's what's upset Nico.

0:45:13 > 0:45:15That was close to contact.

0:45:15 > 0:45:17Toto Wolff and Paddy Lowe both looking a little worried.

0:45:17 > 0:45:21This is another replay of that. The DRS was in operation...

0:45:21 > 0:45:22In fact, this is now.

0:45:22 > 0:45:26He's having another go. He's locked up a little bit.

0:45:26 > 0:45:28Has be got in front this time? Yes? No?

0:45:28 > 0:45:31Hamilton can't fend him off this time! Rosberg's got him!

0:45:31 > 0:45:32He has got past him.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34So Rosberg takes the lead,

0:45:34 > 0:45:37but will he have the run down towards turn four?

0:45:37 > 0:45:39He moves to the inside now.

0:45:39 > 0:45:40Over the dirt, over the dust!

0:45:40 > 0:45:43Hamilton will try and go round the outside

0:45:43 > 0:45:45and try and come back on the exit.

0:45:45 > 0:45:48Wow! This is amazing racing between the two Mercedes team-mates!

0:45:48 > 0:45:51Side by side! Hamilton retakes the place!

0:45:51 > 0:45:54He retakes the lead at the Bahrain Grand Prix

0:45:54 > 0:45:57and there is nothing to choose between them!

0:45:57 > 0:46:00That's how hungry they both are. This is brilliant.

0:46:00 > 0:46:02This is brilliant, brilliant stuff.

0:46:02 > 0:46:06Hamilton still in front of Nico Rosberg,

0:46:06 > 0:46:08but Rosberg throwing everything at him,

0:46:08 > 0:46:11but he'd just gone on the dirt and that probably was why

0:46:11 > 0:46:14he didn't quite have the grip at the next corner,

0:46:14 > 0:46:18and the driver having to think about so many different things

0:46:18 > 0:46:21in a battle like this, and still trying to look after their tyres.

0:46:21 > 0:46:23But they are 35 seconds ahead of anyone else.

0:46:23 > 0:46:27They don't have to worry about being caught by their opposition.

0:46:27 > 0:46:29Hamilton will be in this lap. OK.

0:46:29 > 0:46:31So the first pit stop. This is crucial.

0:46:31 > 0:46:34Every 100th of a second on this pit stop could make a difference.

0:46:34 > 0:46:37That's a lovely, lovely stop for Lewis Hamilton.

0:46:37 > 0:46:39He's on his way once again.

0:46:39 > 0:46:43He's now got the new tyres so he'll be very fast on this next lap.

0:46:43 > 0:46:452.7-second stop.

0:46:45 > 0:46:49'So using DRS, push hard now for two laps. Push hard for two laps,

0:46:49 > 0:46:52'then we go to alternative strategy.'

0:46:52 > 0:46:54So, he's going for the other tyre. Wow.

0:46:54 > 0:46:56This is really going to be interesting.

0:46:56 > 0:46:58We won't know how this works out

0:46:58 > 0:47:00until towards the end of the Grand Prix.

0:47:00 > 0:47:02Rosberg coming in on this lap.

0:47:02 > 0:47:07So is he going to be switching onto the medium compounds?

0:47:07 > 0:47:08Let's take a look.

0:47:08 > 0:47:10It is indeed.

0:47:10 > 0:47:13So a completely different strategy there for Rosberg.

0:47:13 > 0:47:16He puts the harder tyre on early in the race

0:47:16 > 0:47:19and that's going to make life very exciting.

0:47:19 > 0:47:20Two-tenths slower on the pit stop.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23Hamilton will be ahead. Let's just watch them as they come out.

0:47:23 > 0:47:24There's Hamilton on the right.

0:47:24 > 0:47:28Now the gap has opened up but they're on different strategies.

0:47:28 > 0:47:31He's got a great run here, Hulkenberg, and Massa knows it.

0:47:31 > 0:47:34Both Mercedes-powered and Hulkenberg goes to the inside.

0:47:34 > 0:47:37Almost over the white line, but just holds it. He'll lose momentum.

0:47:37 > 0:47:40Watch Perez. Yeah, Perez could get him here.

0:47:40 > 0:47:43They're going to go side by side, team-mates battle again

0:47:43 > 0:47:46and this time it's Perez who gets past Hulkenberg

0:47:46 > 0:47:49because Hulkenberg tried so hard to get past the Williams.

0:47:51 > 0:47:55Oh, Daniel Ricciardo in full DRS and locks up!

0:47:55 > 0:47:57He's locked up and, meanwhile,

0:47:57 > 0:47:59there's an attack on Massa from Perez.

0:47:59 > 0:48:02Perez now going to have a little look at getting alongside him

0:48:02 > 0:48:05And Hulkenberg right behind. Side by side, Perez with Massa.

0:48:05 > 0:48:08Side by side through turn five and he's done it!

0:48:08 > 0:48:11Wow, Sergio Perez driving out of his skin here this weekend

0:48:11 > 0:48:16and Hulkenberg's got the chance to nip past the Williams, as well.

0:48:16 > 0:48:18But Sergio Perez fought for every inch.

0:48:18 > 0:48:20Look for the cut back. He does, indeed.

0:48:20 > 0:48:21Hulkenberg. Does he have the power

0:48:21 > 0:48:23to out-drive the Williams like the Ferrari?

0:48:23 > 0:48:26He's on the outside as they come down to turn nine.

0:48:26 > 0:48:29Good, clean racing from both guys there and Hulkenberg

0:48:29 > 0:48:31also gets past the Williams.

0:48:31 > 0:48:33Gets on it sideways on the exit though and that cost him speed

0:48:33 > 0:48:36and Massa's going to be able to come back at him here as they

0:48:36 > 0:48:38come down towards turn 11.

0:48:38 > 0:48:40He's going to try going down the inside.

0:48:40 > 0:48:42But Hulkenberg can just fend him off.

0:48:42 > 0:48:44Who said this was taxi-driving?

0:48:44 > 0:48:45This is racing!

0:48:45 > 0:48:48Now, this is the replay of Perez and how he got past Massa.

0:48:48 > 0:48:52Well, a move he's made work for him so many times on this circuit.

0:48:52 > 0:48:55He just straightens the car as much as possible on the exit of four

0:48:55 > 0:48:58and he gets a massive drive off through five

0:48:58 > 0:49:00into that high-speed chicane.

0:49:00 > 0:49:03'OK, Lewis, we're safe on fuel so no more lift and coast.

0:49:03 > 0:49:04'No more lift and coast.

0:49:04 > 0:49:07'I heard you, man, I'm looking after my tyres.'

0:49:09 > 0:49:12And Hamilton being very cautious. He knows he's still in a race.

0:49:13 > 0:49:14Oh, we've got a shunt!

0:49:14 > 0:49:18That's a Sauber and a Lotus going around the outside.

0:49:18 > 0:49:21It must be Gutierrez cos Sutil out of the race earlier on.

0:49:21 > 0:49:25This might be a safety car, Ben. They're not going to push that away.

0:49:25 > 0:49:26No, that must surely be a safety car.

0:49:26 > 0:49:29Only the second time in Bahrain race history

0:49:29 > 0:49:30that we would have a safety car.

0:49:30 > 0:49:35Look at the top, the camera's gone off the top, so he's gone over.

0:49:35 > 0:49:37Yeah, the car has flipped, I would suggest.

0:49:37 > 0:49:40Let's take a look and see what happened.

0:49:40 > 0:49:43Was he exiting the pits there? Oh, he was on the outside.

0:49:43 > 0:49:48And the other car was coming out and they just didn't see each other.

0:49:48 > 0:49:50Yes, that's right.

0:49:50 > 0:49:51'Whoa, what was that!'

0:49:51 > 0:49:56He didn't even know it was there. It was Pastor Maldonado.

0:49:56 > 0:49:57Oh, my goodness!

0:49:59 > 0:50:02Meanwhile, Hamilton and Rosberg have taken their stops.

0:50:02 > 0:50:04And the safety car is out.

0:50:05 > 0:50:06'Nico, it's Paddy here.

0:50:06 > 0:50:09'There are about ten laps left to race,

0:50:09 > 0:50:11'can we just make sure we bring both cars home?

0:50:11 > 0:50:12'OK.'

0:50:12 > 0:50:17OK, well, same message to both drivers as a team boss.

0:50:17 > 0:50:20As an engineer, you can do no more than ask them to play nice.

0:50:22 > 0:50:24Yeah, but they didn't actually say hold station,

0:50:24 > 0:50:28They just said bring the cars home. Does that mean they can go racing?

0:50:28 > 0:50:29Of course it does. Good.

0:50:30 > 0:50:33The safety car will be coming in this lap and we will be in

0:50:33 > 0:50:35for a ten-lap sprint

0:50:35 > 0:50:38to decide the outcome of the 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix.

0:50:38 > 0:50:40Hamilton on the harder of the two tyres

0:50:40 > 0:50:43and look at how he's opening the gap to the safety car.

0:50:43 > 0:50:46He wants to make the break. Rosberg on the softer tyre.

0:50:46 > 0:50:49The two Force Indias behind. Away he goes, Lewis Hamilton!

0:50:49 > 0:50:52Gets on the gas, slides his way through the last corner,

0:50:52 > 0:50:54chased immediately by Nico Rosberg.

0:50:54 > 0:50:57They've both been told to keep these cars in one piece

0:50:57 > 0:51:00and get them to the chequered flag. In the background,

0:51:00 > 0:51:03you can also see the two Force Indias side by side,

0:51:03 > 0:51:07charging for it. Hulkenberg coming down the outside of his team-mate.

0:51:07 > 0:51:11Perez trying to turn in him. Oh, and Perez squeezes him out,

0:51:11 > 0:51:13very aggressively. Button will feel that.

0:51:13 > 0:51:15He'll be trying to take advantage,

0:51:15 > 0:51:17but he's got his own problems with Vettel behind.

0:51:17 > 0:51:20The two Mercedes are side-by-side.

0:51:20 > 0:51:22Once again, Hamilton and Rosberg.

0:51:22 > 0:51:24Rosberg trying to go around the outside. Can he do it?

0:51:24 > 0:51:27No, Hamilton will shut the door on Rosberg

0:51:27 > 0:51:29as he did in the earlier part of the Grand Prix.

0:51:29 > 0:51:33But Rosberg with the softer tyre, Perez still in third place.

0:51:33 > 0:51:34Hulkenberg in fourth.

0:51:34 > 0:51:37Button in fifth place, then Vettel and Ricciardo.

0:51:37 > 0:51:39All of them. You can see the leaders just up ahead.

0:51:39 > 0:51:41To give them that extra spice to see what

0:51:41 > 0:51:43they can get out of this Grand Prix.

0:51:43 > 0:51:46Ricciardo isn't just going to sit behind his team-mate.

0:51:46 > 0:51:49Vettel's got a chance here of getting past Jenson Button.

0:51:51 > 0:51:55Ten-second stop and go for Maldonado. Button's wide.

0:51:55 > 0:51:56Yeah, he's made a mistake.

0:51:56 > 0:51:58Vettel's through.

0:51:59 > 0:52:01Can Button come back at him?

0:52:01 > 0:52:03He will be kicking himself

0:52:03 > 0:52:05but another chance for Ricciardo, as well.

0:52:05 > 0:52:07Button loses his place.

0:52:07 > 0:52:10He's down to sixth place now with Ricciardo chasing after him

0:52:10 > 0:52:13as meanwhile, Perez holds on to third.

0:52:13 > 0:52:15And Ricciardo sweeps past Button, as well.

0:52:17 > 0:52:21The DRS is indeed open but he's just a little bit too far back,

0:52:21 > 0:52:23certainly on this lap, to have ago.

0:52:23 > 0:52:25Once again, Hamilton is quicker in that sector.

0:52:25 > 0:52:28A full tenth faster than his team-mate.

0:52:28 > 0:52:30And that might be the saving position this afternoon

0:52:30 > 0:52:32as Ricciardo comes on his team-mate.

0:52:32 > 0:52:34Yeah, Ricciardo down the inside of Vettel

0:52:34 > 0:52:36and he's going to make the move stick, I think.

0:52:36 > 0:52:38Daniel Ricciardo passes the four-times world champion,

0:52:38 > 0:52:41his team-mate, and takes that place.

0:52:41 > 0:52:42He's into fifth.

0:52:42 > 0:52:44Just gone past our commentary position and I can tell you,

0:52:44 > 0:52:48Rosberg didn't look quite close enough to challenge on this lap.

0:52:48 > 0:52:50There you are, onboard, he is having a go!

0:52:50 > 0:52:52He's going from a long way back.

0:52:52 > 0:52:54And Rosberg going side-by-side with Hamilton,

0:52:54 > 0:52:57once again, but Hamilton just able to fend him off,

0:52:57 > 0:52:58but it's not over yet.

0:52:58 > 0:52:59He's got a good exit here.

0:52:59 > 0:53:01They run up towards turn four.

0:53:01 > 0:53:02He'll move to the outside.

0:53:02 > 0:53:06He's tried this several times and Hamilton has hung him out to dry.

0:53:06 > 0:53:07He's going to try it again.

0:53:07 > 0:53:10Hamilton will again squeeze him over the white line.

0:53:10 > 0:53:13Oh, my goodness! Don't touch! They're so close!

0:53:13 > 0:53:15But, again, they get away with it.

0:53:15 > 0:53:18And they were told to bring the cars back in one piece.

0:53:18 > 0:53:20If they carry on like this, that might not happen!

0:53:20 > 0:53:23Rosberg still on the charge, here. He's on the better tyre.

0:53:23 > 0:53:27They have the same car. He's got a lot of anger in that belly.

0:53:27 > 0:53:30I don't see how Hamilton could hold this for the remaining laps.

0:53:30 > 0:53:32Still, amazing watching him drive,

0:53:32 > 0:53:34because there, he was just flicking the brake balance,

0:53:34 > 0:53:36changing the brake balance between corners.

0:53:36 > 0:53:38I know we see that so often,

0:53:38 > 0:53:40but when they're in the middle of a dice like that -

0:53:40 > 0:53:42the control, the thought processes that are going on here...

0:53:42 > 0:53:44Now, he's going to have a look at the inside,

0:53:44 > 0:53:47but no, that's the other DRS zone.

0:53:47 > 0:53:50It's a tough place to overtake. It is possible, but not easy.

0:53:50 > 0:53:52They're doing this wheel-to-wheel racing

0:53:52 > 0:53:55and they're going three seconds a lap quicker than the opposition.

0:53:55 > 0:53:57They have a 14-second gap, already!

0:53:57 > 0:54:01This is the first time we've really seen them in race conditions.

0:54:01 > 0:54:04They have to go flat out, because they are racing each other

0:54:04 > 0:54:08and they are, as you say, three seconds faster than Perez.

0:54:08 > 0:54:11Expect to see Rosberg with the DRS having a go again,

0:54:11 > 0:54:12down into turn one.

0:54:12 > 0:54:14Is he going to try another strategy?

0:54:14 > 0:54:19Leave Hamilton alone into one and try and get the run clean into four?

0:54:20 > 0:54:23Here we go. The DRS is open. Just five laps to go.

0:54:23 > 0:54:26Rosberg has got to find something different to do here.

0:54:26 > 0:54:30Hamilton defends. Oh, he's down the inside, but he's too deep this time.

0:54:30 > 0:54:32Surely, he still gets it into the corner -

0:54:32 > 0:54:35and Hamilton cuts back again.

0:54:35 > 0:54:38Oh, well - Hamilton read that beautifully!

0:54:38 > 0:54:40He's such an instinctive racer, but again,

0:54:40 > 0:54:42he's going to have to defend here,

0:54:42 > 0:54:44because Rosberg's got the outside line.

0:54:44 > 0:54:46Now, can he come back on the exit?

0:54:46 > 0:54:49Hamilton's not going to let him do that, I don't think.

0:54:52 > 0:54:55This is wonderful. How is he doing this?

0:54:55 > 0:54:58How is he keeping Rosberg behind?

0:54:58 > 0:55:01There's confrontation between these two drivers,

0:55:01 > 0:55:03who have known each other for so long.

0:55:03 > 0:55:07Ricciardo - now, did he make a move on Hulkenberg? Let's just see.

0:55:07 > 0:55:10Hulkenberg's been struggling and I think Ricardo's made the move

0:55:10 > 0:55:12and he's into fourth place - yes, he is.

0:55:13 > 0:55:18Out of the points now, with Jenson Button in 11th. He's going slowly.

0:55:18 > 0:55:20He's going very slowly.

0:55:20 > 0:55:24Jenson Button in 11th - he was, but he's dropped to 13th already,

0:55:24 > 0:55:27as Grosjean has gone past

0:55:27 > 0:55:29and he's coming to a halt, I think.

0:55:29 > 0:55:32So, we've lost both McLarens.

0:55:32 > 0:55:34My goodness, what a long time it has been

0:55:34 > 0:55:37since two McLarens failed to finish,

0:55:37 > 0:55:40although it did happen here in Bahrain in the past,

0:55:40 > 0:55:43when both cars went out on the same day,

0:55:43 > 0:55:46but it's very, very unusual in modern Formula One.

0:55:46 > 0:55:50Massa now goes on the attack, with Sebastian Vettel,

0:55:50 > 0:55:53who goes a little bit too deep into turn one.

0:55:53 > 0:55:55But there's no way through, just yet.

0:55:55 > 0:55:57Well, he'll have the run as they come through three

0:55:57 > 0:55:59on their way down to four.

0:55:59 > 0:56:01Vettel's going to have to go defensive. Oh, look at that!

0:56:01 > 0:56:04He's on the sand, he's in the dust and he goes down the inside

0:56:04 > 0:56:06and Massa has got past!

0:56:06 > 0:56:09Sebastian Vettel will come back at him on the exit.

0:56:09 > 0:56:12Superior grip and he is able to retake it. Read that perfectly.

0:56:12 > 0:56:14Squeezed Massa as much as he could.

0:56:14 > 0:56:17Massa didn't give it up for one moment.

0:56:17 > 0:56:21And this is fantastic racing here, this afternoon. Remarkable.

0:56:21 > 0:56:24Everyone said the new rules would turn it into an economy drive.

0:56:24 > 0:56:26We have not seen that at all today.

0:56:26 > 0:56:29We have seen drivers going for it hard, trying to overtake,

0:56:29 > 0:56:32overtaking, being rebuffed.

0:56:32 > 0:56:34And now, Alonso catching up the two Williams,

0:56:34 > 0:56:36which have really not shown the pace

0:56:36 > 0:56:40in this latter part of the Grand Prix that we were expecting.

0:56:40 > 0:56:42And in comes Button, into retirement.

0:56:42 > 0:56:45What a sad way to end his 250th Grand Prix.

0:56:46 > 0:56:49But I can tell you that Lewis Hamilton

0:56:49 > 0:56:51is on the penultimate straight.

0:56:51 > 0:56:53He's coming up towards the last two corners

0:56:53 > 0:56:56and I think that Lewis Hamilton has done enough,

0:56:56 > 0:56:59despite the best attempts of Rosberg.

0:56:59 > 0:57:03Lewis Hamilton wins the Bahrain Grand Prix!

0:57:03 > 0:57:06It's a one-two finish for Mercedes, once again.

0:57:06 > 0:57:10Back-to-back victories within a week for Lewis Hamilton.

0:57:10 > 0:57:14His first win in Bahrain and his 24th career victory,

0:57:14 > 0:57:17to match Juan Manuel Fangio.

0:57:17 > 0:57:21Sergio Perez brings Force India a podium finish.

0:57:21 > 0:57:22Fantastic for them!

0:57:22 > 0:57:24The last time they did that -

0:57:24 > 0:57:26the only time they did that - was 2009.

0:57:28 > 0:57:30Absolutely breathtaking stuff, wasn't it?

0:57:30 > 0:57:32And what's interesting about those two, of course,

0:57:32 > 0:57:34is that they've been friends for such a long time.

0:57:34 > 0:57:36They were karting together as children.

0:57:36 > 0:57:38They know each other inside out,

0:57:38 > 0:57:40but here they are, going for one prize.

0:57:40 > 0:57:43Only one of them could win. It's no wonder they fell out, is it?

0:57:43 > 0:57:45No, it's no wonder they fell out,

0:57:45 > 0:57:47with the pressures that applied to both of them.

0:57:47 > 0:57:50But happily, the friendship seems to have continued.

0:57:50 > 0:57:52But it's a very interesting situation,

0:57:52 > 0:57:56because on the one hand, you've got Lewis the racer

0:57:56 > 0:57:59and on the other hand, you've got Nico the thinker.

0:57:59 > 0:58:02Sometimes, one attribute takes precedence,

0:58:02 > 0:58:05sometimes, the other attribute takes precedence.

0:58:05 > 0:58:08But whichever one takes precedence, it's great for us.

0:58:08 > 0:58:12It certainly does. It always gives us something to talk about, doesn't it?

0:58:12 > 0:58:14That's just about all we've got time for on today's show,

0:58:14 > 0:58:16so it's goodbye from him...

0:58:16 > 0:58:18..and it's goodbye from her. LAUGHTER

0:58:18 > 0:58:19See you next time!
