0:01:09 > 0:01:15COMMENTATOR: It is tailor made for the Ferraris. This is the first
0:01:15 > 0:01:25start for a Grand Prix I have seen. Button is caught up, as well as
0:01:25 > 0:01:29
0:01:29 > 0:01:39Lewis Hamilton. Michael Schumacher It is the most impressive track
0:01:39 > 0:01:46
0:01:46 > 0:01:51that we have around here. Long, quick, wet. It is massively fast.
0:01:51 > 0:01:57Absolute classic race track. One of the best venues to take a Formula
0:01:57 > 0:02:04One car to. We like being on the edge. If you make a mistake, you're
0:02:04 > 0:02:14going to hurt yourself. They go through flat out. There is always
0:02:14 > 0:02:24
0:02:24 > 0:02:30that challenge whether you can do As ever there is always a cloud,
0:02:30 > 0:02:34even when the sky is blue. The wait is almost over for Lewis Hamilton
0:02:34 > 0:02:39the -- and the rest. Welcome to place that is famous for his water.
0:02:39 > 0:02:44The big worry is water of the rain variety. We have had an incredibly
0:02:44 > 0:02:48wet weekend. And two men know about wet weekends in Spa. They have made
0:02:48 > 0:02:53them work to their advantage and disadvantage over the years. Your
0:02:53 > 0:02:58greatest ever weekend in the rain here, you haven't forgotten about
0:02:58 > 0:03:03it? I don't think you can. You keep showing it. It was simply amazing.
0:03:03 > 0:03:09Because you know it is difficult to put across the excitement and the
0:03:09 > 0:03:14feeling that you have got at this moment. These are very scary days
0:03:14 > 0:03:23in a romantic way. Eddie does sometimes still talk about the past.
0:03:23 > 0:03:31This is how he made hids way -- his way to the car. A snazy dresser and
0:03:31 > 0:03:36a snazy dancer. He was like a leprechaun. But the reason why
0:03:36 > 0:03:42Eddie took that win, you took out Michael Schumacher. Very kind of
0:03:42 > 0:03:45you. I didn't take him out. It makes it sound as if it was
0:03:45 > 0:03:49deliberate. It was as a result of the fact he was coming up to lap me
0:03:49 > 0:03:54and I had slowed, because I have given the information. Because of
0:03:54 > 0:03:59the heat in the battle between McLaren and Ferrari, he thought it
0:03:59 > 0:04:05was deliberate. His words can't be repeated. I felt secure, because I
0:04:05 > 0:04:09had my crash helmet on. But well done to Michael Schumacher. This
0:04:09 > 0:04:15weekend 20 years in Formula One. He said that losingly temper with you
0:04:15 > 0:04:20was the low point of his career. That is nice. I'm surprised given
0:04:20 > 0:04:26some of the other incidents he has been involved in. But it was the
0:04:26 > 0:04:31fact that he pub luck -- publicly showed his emotions. Well we have
0:04:31 > 0:04:36had a lovely break. What did you do to fill your time? I did some
0:04:36 > 0:04:44sailing. Did a bit of nothing. Just cruising. I did an interesting in
0:04:44 > 0:04:54Rotterdam, I did st city ray -- did the city racing exhibition. Did you
0:04:54 > 0:05:13
0:05:13 > 0:05:19get up to much? Not a lot! Yeah In my ways it is straight forward.
0:05:19 > 0:05:29You will be watching the road. off the throttle when I'm going
0:05:29 > 0:05:33
0:05:33 > 0:05:41down? Yes. Off the throttle when you're going down. I'm getting the
0:05:41 > 0:05:47feel for that. Brake a pit. You can definitely. Unbelievable. Eddie
0:05:47 > 0:05:52goes to Rotterdam, I go to Suffolk. David teaches Tom Cruise thousand
0:05:52 > 0:05:56drive a Formula One car. How did that -- how to drive a Formula One
0:05:56 > 0:06:02car. How did that come about. like to pretend he was a friend,
0:06:02 > 0:06:09but that was the first time I met him. He would have laughed at your
0:06:09 > 0:06:16dance when you won. He may have auditioned for for -- me for a part.
0:06:16 > 0:06:23We could do a due owe. He is a big fan of motor sport. When he was
0:06:23 > 0:06:30given the chance to drive the car, he has done an endurance race
0:06:30 > 0:06:35before.? You were there to celebrate the fact that Texas --
0:06:35 > 0:06:40You were out there to celeb brait the fact that Texas is coming on
0:06:40 > 0:06:46board. Yes we got it wrong the last time, but Austin is a state of the
0:06:46 > 0:06:51art track. A lot of elevation change and it is a very, it has a
0:06:51 > 0:06:56European feel. It is a young town and they will embrace Formula One.
0:06:56 > 0:06:59The guy there is are proud of the circuit. But regardless of what
0:07:00 > 0:07:09they do, we would all agree when it couples to circuits, they don't
0:07:10 > 0:07:32
0:07:32 > 0:07:42We may have put the umbrellas away, but don't be fooled, it once rained
0:07:42 > 0:07:54
0:07:54 > 0:07:59European Grand Prix in June. Snue But he is still dominant in the
0:07:59 > 0:08:04Championship and it will be a brave man who would call anyone to beat
0:08:04 > 0:08:08him. As far as the rest of the season goes, the worry for most of
0:08:08 > 0:08:14the drivers is they they can start catching Sebastian Vettel, he does
0:08:14 > 0:08:19not need to win any more. He could still be champion. Well yes, but
0:08:19 > 0:08:22the guys that are battling him for the Championship, the only one that
0:08:22 > 0:08:27hasn't won a Championship is Mark Webber. The others have peace of
0:08:27 > 0:08:30mind of knowing they have won it already. But the real, the building
0:08:30 > 0:08:34blocks of the Championship have been done in the early part of
0:08:34 > 0:08:40season and it will be difficult to beat Sebastian Vettel. But not
0:08:40 > 0:08:43impossible. Not if they keep on winning. I will leave you walk over
0:08:43 > 0:08:50here. The aim of the game is to pick up the wins. We haven't had
0:08:50 > 0:08:54any racing for a few weeks, but at least we stilled that memories that
0:08:54 > 0:09:04this guy in this car gave us, Jenson Button with an incredible
0:09:04 > 0:09:10win the last time out. Comment comen who can get some traction
0:09:10 > 0:09:16from -- COMMENTATOR: Who can get some traction from those tyres.
0:09:16 > 0:09:26Button is holding third place. Lewis Hamilton takes the lead as
0:09:26 > 0:09:26
0:09:26 > 0:09:36Sebastian Vettel can find no grip on that tyre. That is Massa. Into
0:09:36 > 0:09:40
0:09:40 > 0:09:49the tyres. Button takes over second place. Nick hide felt caught fire.
0:09:49 > 0:09:56Michael Schumacher has spun it. Around she goes. Oh di Resta has to
0:09:56 > 0:10:01drive off the track to avoid hims - - hitting him. Button takes the
0:10:01 > 0:10:06lead again. Now Lewis Hamilton is back in the lead. There is a
0:10:06 > 0:10:09handbrake turn, followed by a three-point turn. Lewis Hamilton,
0:10:09 > 0:10:15the intermediates going on. Fernando Alonso has breezed past
0:10:15 > 0:10:22Lewis Hamilton. He has got to pit for tyres. That will have cost
0:10:22 > 0:10:31Lewis the race. Lewis Hamilton is going to do his drive through.
0:10:31 > 0:10:38Lewis Hamilton is going to take the place from Mark Webberer. -- Webber.
0:10:38 > 0:10:45Button wins the Hungarian Grand Prix. How much would Jenson Button
0:10:45 > 0:10:50love this race to be as impressive? Let's talk about McLaren. They
0:10:50 > 0:10:55haven't got three wins in a row since 2008, looking at the stat,
0:10:55 > 0:11:00could you see them getting three wins in a row? Very good chance.
0:11:00 > 0:11:02They have the impetus and all of the power and they have made huge
0:11:02 > 0:11:07improvements to the car and changeable conditions. 23 you were
0:11:07 > 0:11:15looking for a track to give you changeable conditions, which we
0:11:15 > 0:11:23know these drivers excel in. only thing to add a will the of lap
0:11:23 > 0:11:26is 100% throttle. So it is place where McLaren have been strong. And
0:11:26 > 0:11:30they are supreme in brake. The middle sector will belong to Red
0:11:30 > 0:11:35Bull. But the first and last sector, there is only one corner where you
0:11:35 > 0:11:39have to brake. As much as this sport is controlled by computers,
0:11:39 > 0:11:45it is nice to see a toolbox. Not that we would know what to do with
0:11:45 > 0:11:52them. Now a look at the standings. It is so difficult to catch
0:11:52 > 0:11:59Sebastian Vettel. We have decided to though you what the gap is, 85
0:11:59 > 0:12:09points between Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber. And Red Bull dominant
0:12:09 > 0:12:09
0:12:09 > 0:12:14and this is where the money is involved in Formula One. 383 points.
0:12:14 > 0:12:19Because there has been no racing, it does not mane that not much hag
0:12:19 > 0:12:27has been going on in Formula One. Ted Kravitz is here with the latest
0:12:27 > 0:12:32news. TED KRAVITZ: Red Bull confirmed Mark Webber will continue
0:12:32 > 0:12:37to drive for them next year. He signed a one year contract
0:12:37 > 0:12:42extension for 2012, by which time he will be 36. It will be his sixth
0:12:42 > 0:12:49season with the team. You have been assured everything will be the same
0:12:49 > 0:12:55between you and Sebastian Vettel? Yes everything's fine. You know,
0:12:55 > 0:13:00that I wouldn't... Be happy if it wasn't like that. It's all good and
0:13:00 > 0:13:04that is why I have got it going again. Red Bull have lost ground in
0:13:04 > 0:13:09the development race, because some new parts they fit resulted in
0:13:09 > 0:13:16higher tyre wear. But Sebastian Vettel say there is is no need to
0:13:17 > 0:13:21panic. I think we have learned from previous races. Understood, we
0:13:21 > 0:13:26thought, we think that we have understood a lot. We will see this
0:13:26 > 0:13:32weekend how much. McLaren come here on a hat trick. Lewis Hamilton won
0:13:32 > 0:13:42in skraermy, Jenson Button in Hungary and here the team have a
0:13:42 > 0:13:42
0:13:42 > 0:13:49new DRS. That is possible. We're not the only people with uptkwraids.
0:13:49 > 0:13:53-- upgrades. It will make our car quicker. Red Bull and Ferrari will
0:13:53 > 0:13:58still be quick. It is going to be fun. We're there or thereabouts. We
0:13:58 > 0:14:04have a good shot. The others I think, they will be working as hard
0:14:04 > 0:14:12as us. But it will be a close battle. Ferrari will shift their
0:14:12 > 0:14:16focus on what they promise will be an innovative car. In the next
0:14:16 > 0:14:22couple of weeks we start thinking of nextlet year's car. But this
0:14:22 > 0:14:31year's car is still very useful to keep testing things and keep
0:14:32 > 0:14:36improving. Reno have replaced -- Renault have replaced their drivers.
0:14:36 > 0:14:43We have a main hearing in three weeks. My position is that I have a
0:14:43 > 0:14:48contract and that I want to drive. That is about it. If Bruno comes
0:14:48 > 0:14:51with money from Brazil, can you understand the team doing what they
0:14:51 > 0:14:55have done? No comment. It has nothing to do with a pure
0:14:55 > 0:15:01commercial point of view. He is fighting for Championship and he
0:15:01 > 0:15:06knows I can be competitive. With Senna and Vitaly Petrov, in terms
0:15:06 > 0:15:12of the F1 starts their line up is the least experience nds Formula
0:15:12 > 0:15:22One. Renault have redesigned the air bubble that exploded in the
0:15:22 > 0:15:26
0:15:26 > 0:15:33Michael Schumacher pushes himself... I always ask, what can I improve
0:15:33 > 0:15:38myself? Work can I work on myself? And I still have not lost at a
0:15:38 > 0:15:45critical approach and I are still asking, am I good enough? Following
0:15:45 > 0:15:48another double points finish in Budapest, Toro Rosso are going well.
0:15:48 > 0:15:55It was the first car of the team this year and we have more
0:15:55 > 0:15:58experience this time and we're getting better,. And if you missed
0:15:58 > 0:16:03practice, Friday was wet, which caught out Bruno Senna and Paul di
0:16:03 > 0:16:08Resta but this morning Mark Webber was quickest. No one has been
0:16:08 > 0:16:16caught out yet because the drivers have been banned from using their
0:16:16 > 0:16:20removable rear wing through the famous corner. No duress. And
0:16:20 > 0:16:26denies look at the form guide. And out of nowhere, this man has ended
0:16:26 > 0:16:32up in a car. Bad news for one tends to be good for someone else. Can we
0:16:32 > 0:16:38have a brake -- a quick word with Bruno? When did you find out you're
0:16:38 > 0:16:43in the car? It was quite late, I got a call on Wednesday evening and
0:16:43 > 0:16:47I was going into the car and at first there was some expectation of
0:16:47 > 0:16:52getting into the car. But that was still only last week. Everything
0:16:52 > 0:16:56came together very quickly. I'm really thrilled to be in the car
0:16:56 > 0:16:59I'm going for the race. describe it as like Christmas, but
0:17:00 > 0:17:04Christmas does not last long and neither does the honeymoon period
0:17:04 > 0:17:11in Formula One. You're in for the next two races, is that enough time
0:17:11 > 0:17:16to prove yourself? At the moment, that is what I am confirmed for,
0:17:16 > 0:17:23the team wants me to take these races and pending legal issues, it
0:17:23 > 0:17:27should be possible. I will take it step by step. So far, it has been
0:17:27 > 0:17:33going all right, apart from a small mistake on Friday, everything went
0:17:33 > 0:17:39smoothly. These guys give me great support when I needed it. It's all
0:17:39 > 0:17:44right. That was the baddies, the good news on Saturday was 9th
0:17:44 > 0:17:54fastest? How did that feel? I have not seen the top 10 in quite a
0:17:54 > 0:17:59while. Of course, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa put that together.
0:17:59 > 0:18:03But mixing with those guys, being in front of Michael, that was
0:18:03 > 0:18:08really good. I am looking forward to qualifying, there is still no --
0:18:08 > 0:18:14so much learning to do. I am nowhere near 100% but I know I can
0:18:14 > 0:18:24do it. It's great to see your name back in the black and gold. Good
0:18:24 > 0:18:30luck. And a chat to divot and Eddie, he seemed quite calm I'm looking
0:18:30 > 0:18:37quite serene. I'm sure the nerves will creep up slowly? -- I will
0:18:37 > 0:18:44chat to David. Why is he suddenly good enough now? It was a test on a
0:18:44 > 0:18:47Friday running in Budapest. His lap times have been consistent and
0:18:47 > 0:18:51physically this is one of the more challenging circuits and that is
0:18:52 > 0:19:00the reason they have the confidence. People might be a little bit
0:19:00 > 0:19:04sceptical. Is this team in a bit of a model? I love that analogy, David.
0:19:04 > 0:19:08I am confused and perplexed about this team, then made bad mistakes
0:19:08 > 0:19:12by allowing Kubica to do the rallying in the first place and
0:19:12 > 0:19:16their senior management have gone downhill steadily. They need to get
0:19:17 > 0:19:22a grip of this quickly. This was a World Championship team at one
0:19:22 > 0:19:25stage and they are a shadow of their former self. That is Eddie
0:19:25 > 0:19:29Jordan's thoughts, let's go down the pit lane and get away from this
0:19:29 > 0:19:35noise. Let's have a look at some of the teams that have not quite shown
0:19:35 > 0:19:40the speeds of Renault's so far this season and starting at the back. 11
0:19:40 > 0:19:50races down, he deserves the gold star? Who should get detention and
0:19:50 > 0:20:06
0:20:06 > 0:20:11he needs a new school uniform? It's and he churchy and Virgin together.
0:20:11 > 0:20:17No chance of catching them at mid level at this performance. Grid C.
0:20:17 > 0:20:27HRT. No longer back of the class, new orders and plenty of homework
0:20:27 > 0:20:27
0:20:27 > 0:20:31to be done. Grid C minus. Virgin, reliability has improved. But their
0:20:31 > 0:20:41performance has not. And a new tactical team is in place and they
0:20:41 > 0:20:49
0:20:49 > 0:20:53the moment and let's focus on Lotus. We know they have taken at the
0:20:53 > 0:20:56Renault engine and have brought the Red Bull back in and have not been
0:20:56 > 0:21:02short of paying money with two experienced drivers, but you cannot
0:21:02 > 0:21:06buy speed quickly here? You can take the engine and gearbox and the
0:21:06 > 0:21:11mechanical geometry, looking at the other cars, but you need the
0:21:11 > 0:21:13aerodynamic package and that is something that they need to invest
0:21:13 > 0:21:19money end and it's getting the right wind tunnels and getting the
0:21:19 > 0:21:22right amount of time. And in your very first season in Formula One,
0:21:23 > 0:21:26you have seven. Finishes and that was back when the top six picked up
0:21:26 > 0:21:33the points so what has changed in the way Formula One works that has
0:21:33 > 0:21:37made it difficult for teams like Lotus? It is reliability, it has
0:21:37 > 0:21:41been the poorest of all the teams, they have shown flashes of genius
0:21:41 > 0:21:45every now and then but not enough and for me, in their second year,
0:21:45 > 0:21:50they really need to start pushing midfield and try to get into the
0:21:50 > 0:21:56top 10 and at the moment it isn't there. I do not know what they need
0:21:56 > 0:22:03to do but David is right, the timing is always with the
0:22:03 > 0:22:06aerodynamics. We can see if they can make it into the second part of
0:22:06 > 0:22:12qualifying but for the first time in over 20 years, the crowd is
0:22:12 > 0:22:19saying, how will the Belgian driver get on? It is a big day for Jerome
0:22:19 > 0:22:24d'Ambrosio. In Belgium, since I was a kid, it was just impossible to
0:22:24 > 0:22:29make it into form and won. I just fought my own way up through the
0:22:29 > 0:22:33latter and now I am here and the fans appreciate that. I am not
0:22:33 > 0:22:36going to win the Grand Prix at home but and will try my best. People
0:22:36 > 0:22:43are coming to appreciate the fact that there is a Belgian man on the
0:22:43 > 0:22:49grid. What would be a successful weekend? There are no miracles. If
0:22:49 > 0:22:53I can do a good qualifying as close as I can and fined the maximum
0:22:53 > 0:23:00potential of the car, this is what I need to do. Finish the race in a
0:23:00 > 0:23:02good position, maybe if I can have another 14 or 20, that would be
0:23:02 > 0:23:09fantastic and the weather conditions must be strange for that
0:23:09 > 0:23:19to happen. That is what we need to move up the great but finishing the
0:23:19 > 0:23:25race, being close to the car's potential, that is what I need.
0:23:25 > 0:23:29finished 14th twice this year. The Canada weekend was big, from
0:23:29 > 0:23:34Saturday, highs and lows and lots of the motions. People ask me about
0:23:34 > 0:23:40my best moment and I say it was racing in Canada, and the worst was
0:23:40 > 0:23:46qualifying in Canada, I crashed on Friday. Qualifying on Saturday was
0:23:46 > 0:23:53different. D'Ambrosio is outside the percentage rule. It was a
0:23:53 > 0:23:58fantastic race on Sunday, it was crazy, I wasn't a good position, to
0:23:58 > 0:24:02laps after the Red Flag and the restart I was p 12. I had no idea,
0:24:02 > 0:24:08I came back. I came into the front and it was like that for the whole
0:24:08 > 0:24:11race. Very exciting and a great moment. You have been matching your
0:24:11 > 0:24:17team-mate pretty well throughout the season, something to be proud
0:24:17 > 0:24:22of. What do you think the benchmark is? It is to stay with my team-mate
0:24:22 > 0:24:27and because we had different cars, the best person you can reference
0:24:27 > 0:24:31in terms of her performance is your team-mate. And I am lucky enough to
0:24:31 > 0:24:37have a team-mate like Timo Glock, he has a lot of experience but just
0:24:38 > 0:24:44try to reach 10 and learn from hen, that is something that is a chance
0:24:44 > 0:24:49that I love. A handbrake turn and a three-point turn... Tell us about
0:24:49 > 0:24:58that Spain in the pit lane? It made a lot of hits on the website and
0:24:58 > 0:25:06Youtube. That is something from it! These things happen. You cannot
0:25:06 > 0:25:11stay too much on these things. many drivers say that's by is a
0:25:11 > 0:25:14favourite circuit, and this is your home grand prix. On the one side,
0:25:14 > 0:25:18he had the chance that it is probably the best track in the
0:25:18 > 0:25:24world from the driver's point of view, it's just fantastic to drive
0:25:24 > 0:25:29round. And for me, the second point is it's my own grand prix. So
0:25:29 > 0:25:33coming here is just a great moment. It's a great weekend and I will
0:25:33 > 0:25:39have to stick to my job and stay focused and everything but I will
0:25:39 > 0:25:44enjoy every bit of the weekend. Final preparations being made to
0:25:45 > 0:25:53the Virgin car, it's a big weekend for the man and that cockpit and
0:25:53 > 0:26:02this is what the teams assemble and seconds ago, Rhian expected between
0:26:02 > 0:26:061:55pm and 2pm. 24 minutes or less. We have talked about the teams at
0:26:06 > 0:26:10the very back, that is where Virgin are. But what about the teams in
0:26:10 > 0:26:20the midfield, fighting tooth and nail to finish 5th or 6th in this
0:26:20 > 0:26:31
0:26:31 > 0:26:41note, greatly missed. The financial position is of grave concern.
0:26:41 > 0:26:42
0:26:42 > 0:26:49Evidenced by recent driver changes. C- Sauber, Rock Steady, the school
0:26:49 > 0:26:56of hard knocks, pushing this exciting but experienced team-mate.
0:26:56 > 0:27:06Force India, Ricky of the season in Paul di Resta. Together with Adrian
0:27:06 > 0:27:06
0:27:06 > 0:27:10Sutil, a force to be reckoned with. Toro Rosso, how very shaky start.
0:27:10 > 0:27:18But they have knuckled down. Alguersuari, once threatened with
0:27:18 > 0:27:22the sack, soon told his socks up. Williams, their worst season ever.
0:27:22 > 0:27:32Free-falling and no obvious signs of any immediate recovery. An epic
0:27:32 > 0:27:39
0:27:39 > 0:27:45smile on his face after the last couple of results. And particularly
0:27:45 > 0:27:53in 2009, that must put a smile on your face? That was like a dream
0:27:53 > 0:27:56come true. We never expected that, it was a huge surprise. Hoping we
0:27:56 > 0:28:01can repeat that some time. Let's talk about the season because it
0:28:01 > 0:28:04has been strange, five races were you have not picked up any point
0:28:04 > 0:28:08and for a team of your size isn't good enough but in the past two
0:28:08 > 0:28:12races you have scored more than anybody, apart from the three big
0:28:12 > 0:28:20teams, so how do you assess what you have achieved? At the beginning
0:28:20 > 0:28:24of the season I said that the first few races were an extension of the
0:28:24 > 0:28:30development, we did not quite get that right over the winter. And you
0:28:30 > 0:28:36are confident that once we came to Europe, we would start showing some
0:28:36 > 0:28:40real performance. We have made Q 3 in the last four races and we had
0:28:40 > 0:28:44scored a lot of points in the last couple of races, finishing just
0:28:44 > 0:28:50behind the top three. That shows that we're going the right
0:28:50 > 0:28:53direction. Not being English, but all the English eyes and his team
0:28:53 > 0:28:58want to know what is happening to your cricket team but you'll not
0:28:58 > 0:29:03get into that! How much do you put down to Paul di Resta, we love what
0:29:03 > 0:29:08he is doing, has he brought everyone together? Paul is a
0:29:08 > 0:29:12wonderful guy, a very talented driver. He gets along superbly with
0:29:12 > 0:29:20everyone in the team. We have a lot of respect for him and his talent.
0:29:20 > 0:29:26He is a wonderful addition. So is Nico Hulkenberg. Wonderful guys,
0:29:26 > 0:29:29both of them. They give us a lot of feedback and we have been assisted
0:29:29 > 0:29:33with Adrian in the development of the car. What do you need to change
0:29:33 > 0:29:36in the team to take that next step? You say you have made changes from
0:29:36 > 0:29:44the winter to getting back to Europe, but for next year, you must
0:29:44 > 0:29:50want to move the team forward, is that personnel or budget? We are
0:29:50 > 0:29:54very proud of the fact that on a small budget, we are punching well
0:29:54 > 0:30:01above our weight. I do not believe that money alone can buy
0:30:01 > 0:30:06performance. I think we have a dedicated steam -- team of
0:30:06 > 0:30:11engineers, more on the track and back, Silverstone. The entire crew
0:30:11 > 0:30:16is passionate about getting Force India ahead. And we have succeeded
0:30:16 > 0:30:26in motivating them and getting The Passion up and clearly it is paying
0:30:26 > 0:30:35
0:30:35 > 0:30:41luck chasing that sixth place. only sixth? Potential champions
0:30:41 > 0:30:48this year. Well maybe next year. Now let's talk about the teams at
0:30:48 > 0:30:58the front. We have the usual favourite, along with the new swot.
0:30:58 > 0:30:58
0:30:58 > 0:31:03# We don't need no education! # We don't need no thought control #
0:31:03 > 0:31:07Bull, Sebastian Vettel, a text book start. Following on from his
0:31:07 > 0:31:11Championship win last year. He is still dominating qualifying,
0:31:11 > 0:31:19however has been outfoxed in recent races. Mark Webber, never out of
0:31:19 > 0:31:27the top five this season, but just can't get there on these Pirellis.
0:31:27 > 0:31:31A my news -- A minus. McLaren, two wins each for the Brits, Jenson
0:31:31 > 0:31:35Button simply amazing in changeable conditions. Lewis Hamilton the
0:31:35 > 0:31:40perennial charger. Taking the pain and the tkphrory in equal
0:31:40 > 0:31:49proportions. But -- glory in equal proportions, but the car has been
0:31:49 > 0:31:52out of sorts. B. Ferrari, slow out of the blocks, but have turned it
0:31:52 > 0:31:58around. Fernando Alonso's win at Silverstone and Felipe Massa upping
0:31:58 > 0:32:08his game has given Ferrari a B and the most improved team of the
0:32:08 > 0:32:10
0:32:10 > 0:32:20season to date. Mercedes, treading water. No real evidence of any
0:32:20 > 0:32:27
0:32:27 > 0:32:34improvements. They must do better to remain in fourth place. D. We're
0:32:34 > 0:32:39joined by two team principals, Martin Whitmarsh and Christian
0:32:39 > 0:32:44Horner. Let's squeeze up. It is loud. Mark Webber has extended his
0:32:44 > 0:32:48contract. Did you have to have something in writing that there is
0:32:48 > 0:32:58equal footing in the team between him and Sebastian. I think you said
0:32:58 > 0:33:04it would be treated equally in the team. Well hey -- he he has been.
0:33:04 > 0:33:09It was an easy decision to reach. We're Delighted he will be with us.
0:33:10 > 0:33:15What has he got a better sun tan than you? And the question to you,
0:33:15 > 0:33:20tell us, you have won three races last two, you make it three in a
0:33:20 > 0:33:26row? I wish we had run three races in the last two, but I think we
0:33:26 > 0:33:31have won two in the last two. you for catching me out. We would
0:33:31 > 0:33:36like to make it three in a row, but these guys look strong. I don't
0:33:36 > 0:33:41think there is any point in giving predictions. Anything can happen in
0:33:41 > 0:33:45the race. It is a fantastic circuit. These guys are pushing hard and
0:33:45 > 0:33:52they have got a great lead. We're going to try and win as many races
0:33:52 > 0:33:58as we can. They won't make it easy for us. I heard you earlier talking
0:33:58 > 0:34:03to Stefano Domenicali, it seemed like a love in, what has gone wrong,
0:34:03 > 0:34:09the team principals seem to be getting along. There is a better
0:34:09 > 0:34:15class of people in Formula One now. I'm on your case now. Any time you
0:34:15 > 0:34:20have seen me nice about McLarch, it is over. You have never been nice
0:34:20 > 0:34:27about McLaren. Now it does seem like both Ferrari and McLaren have
0:34:27 > 0:34:32caught you guys up, is that because your car is so good the changes you
0:34:32 > 0:34:37can make are marginal and they have bigger leaps to make? That is
0:34:37 > 0:34:42deSeptemberive. If you go back to Melbourne, we have had close
0:34:42 > 0:34:46company from McLaren or Ferrari at every race. But we have taken our
0:34:46 > 0:34:50opportunities. And managed to deliver upon that. We're now at a
0:34:50 > 0:34:55stage where the teams have converged and you have got five or
0:34:55 > 0:35:00six drivers that come to each Grand Prix with a genuine chance of being
0:35:00 > 0:35:10able to win. How are you motivating your team to believe they can still
0:35:10 > 0:35:13
0:35:13 > 0:35:17win? Well, as a mat me tigs, until it is impossible you believe it.
0:35:17 > 0:35:24But we're trying to win races, we can't control what a good job Red
0:35:24 > 0:35:30Bull are doing. But if we can win races that, -- that is great. But
0:35:30 > 0:35:36there is a fearsome lead. But we haven't given up. You have had by
0:35:36 > 0:35:40your own standards a miserable return for points in this circuit.
0:35:40 > 0:35:46What will you do to change that? have only finished second here the
0:35:46 > 0:35:51last two years. By your own standards I'm talking about. Yes it
0:35:51 > 0:35:55is a track that doesn't play to our key strengths, it is horse power
0:35:55 > 0:35:59the dependent in sectors one and three. We're determined to break
0:35:59 > 0:36:04our duck here. Mark got the pole here last year. Both drivers are
0:36:05 > 0:36:12fired up. They have come back from a good break and motivated to get a
0:36:12 > 0:36:17big result. We know you're motivated, what is the pace telling
0:36:17 > 0:36:22us, what is your strategy? They have got a small wing, so we have
0:36:22 > 0:36:27put a small wing on. I hope we both have got it right. But I can't tell.
0:36:27 > 0:36:33I mean, we have had a break. People have put some new parts on. You
0:36:33 > 0:36:38will see a lot going on to the car, to people like me who don't
0:36:38 > 0:36:42understand, they clearly new parts. In the running we have had so far,
0:36:42 > 0:36:46you would say that Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren look strong. But I
0:36:46 > 0:36:51wouldn't be able to call it. I don't think necessarily qualifying
0:36:51 > 0:36:57conditions, we're in a pit of sun, but I think it is likely to be damp
0:36:57 > 0:37:02by the time we get qualifying. I think again it will have a bearing
0:37:02 > 0:37:06on the track with the right tyre, driver doing a good job to get
0:37:06 > 0:37:11through. Thank you both very much. It is lovely to see you getting on
0:37:11 > 0:37:17so well. But no more cuddling in front of cameras. Well done to
0:37:17 > 0:37:22Eddie on his sun tan. I think he has won the competition. It was
0:37:22 > 0:37:28never in doubt! No. This man has a tan in the middle of winter. Thank
0:37:28 > 0:37:34you. Now let's find out what it is like on this circuit, not just from
0:37:34 > 0:37:44a man who knows what it takes to win here, but a guy who had one of
0:37:44 > 0:37:44
0:37:44 > 0:37:54his best finishes, Adrian Sutil, who went for a walk with David.
0:37:54 > 0:37:55
0:37:55 > 0:38:00DAVID COULTHARD: Hello racing driver. We stopped in the middle of
0:38:00 > 0:38:04Eau Rouge, can you talk through the experience of going through this
0:38:04 > 0:38:10amazing rise, the elevation change is huge. It is blind at the top.
0:38:10 > 0:38:16Yes, it is my favourite corner. It's quite easy flat, but it is
0:38:16 > 0:38:20challenging for some reason. It is the best rollercoaster. You feel
0:38:20 > 0:38:25the G-force and the compression down there. It gets so light over
0:38:25 > 0:38:30the top. You are facing up to the sky. You don't see. It is just a
0:38:30 > 0:38:34man corner I always say. It is impressive. When you get down the
0:38:34 > 0:38:39light you will be in the car. You don't see at all. How do you
0:38:39 > 0:38:43reference where the position the car? It I about how long you hold
0:38:43 > 0:38:49the apex? Yes. Just try to always hold the apex on a consistent way
0:38:49 > 0:38:59and you know where to go. For you, this is the best corner in Formula
0:38:59 > 0:39:00
0:39:00 > 0:39:05One? I would say, yes. We have stopped at turn 8. This isn't
0:39:05 > 0:39:09actual think track. This is the run off area. The track is over there.
0:39:09 > 0:39:14Why would they have covered this over? It is not a dangerous corner.
0:39:14 > 0:39:20Yes it is not a dangerous corner and it has, there is not even
0:39:20 > 0:39:26carpet here, where you probably get a bit of penalty. Here you just can
0:39:26 > 0:39:32run wide. It was tricky, a tricky corner to brake. Sometimes when you
0:39:32 > 0:39:35had a look up, you went wide and lost grip. This is where Lewis
0:39:35 > 0:39:40Hamilton ran wide and touched the barrier. Yes I think it was last
0:39:41 > 0:39:45two or three laps it started to rain and he was still there. Lewis
0:39:45 > 0:39:54Hamilton is in the gravel. We have stopped here in the middle of ten
0:39:54 > 0:40:03and 11. A fantastic corner. remember when it was wet, I was
0:40:03 > 0:40:13cautious with this kerb, they were really sliply ry. It look,, yes --
0:40:13 > 0:40:21slippery, it looks, yes anti-slip paint. He is on his bike, 60
0:40:21 > 0:40:25kilometres an hour. You seem to be a historian in Formula One. You
0:40:25 > 0:40:32liked it when there was no gravel run off. You like the thrill of the
0:40:32 > 0:40:39roller coster -- rollercoaster ride. Before racing, I wanted to be a
0:40:39 > 0:40:47stunt man. Now, I'm a stunt man or an actor. Now I'm probably both. I
0:40:47 > 0:40:54have to be both in certain ways. But I like this one. You were a kid
0:40:54 > 0:40:59throwing yourself off a garage roof to see your mother. With the
0:40:59 > 0:41:03umbrella, I jumped down like a parachute. This a more Benny Hill
0:41:03 > 0:41:13than Hollywood. Stunt man, actor, Formula One driver, we wsh you well
0:41:13 > 0:41:14
0:41:14 > 0:41:20for the weekend and thank you for your time. JAKE HUMPHREY: Eight
0:41:21 > 0:41:26minutes to the start. That is Eau Rouge to see a cargo through there
0:41:26 > 0:41:30is incredible. You said the reason why the prince Pams are friendly,
0:41:30 > 0:41:39they are not the team owners as they were? They're professional
0:41:39 > 0:41:43guys and Chief Executives. They're responsible for the team. But they
0:41:43 > 0:41:46haven't got their own money necessarily in there. When, in the
0:41:46 > 0:41:50olden days and it was your responsibility and you had to plead
0:41:50 > 0:41:54to the bank and the investors and make sure you budget was correct.
0:41:54 > 0:42:01They don't have to do that. They have to administer it in a proper
0:42:01 > 0:42:07way. That is why they were more grumpy in Eddie's day. The rain is
0:42:07 > 0:42:11starting to come down. Things can change here in an instant. This is
0:42:11 > 0:42:16what was happening earlier. It was 10 wet, the guise hardly did any
0:42:16 > 0:42:22running. In the first two sessions, there was 50 minutes of dry running
0:42:22 > 0:42:25and nothing today. So if it is dry, it will be a stab in the unknown.
0:42:25 > 0:42:31It also is unbelievable for the viewers and the people here,
0:42:31 > 0:42:37because it give there is a sense of excitement, no one has a clue what
0:42:37 > 0:42:44is going to happen. Ross Brawn from Mercedes, would love to help
0:42:44 > 0:42:49Michael Schumacher relive the glory around here. Michael has won six
0:42:49 > 0:42:53times here. We are hearing it is going to be raining, but it could
0:42:53 > 0:42:58be dry tomorrow. Could you afford to sacrifice today and take a
0:42:58 > 0:43:02gamble to get good race pace tomorrow? This is a track where it
0:43:02 > 0:43:07is a biggest differential between best lap time in the wet and in the
0:43:07 > 0:43:13dry. So it is a question of whether you compromise or whether you
0:43:13 > 0:43:18commit one way or the other. I think for us, it is commit to a dry
0:43:18 > 0:43:25race, because qualifying these days doesn't seem as critical as it used
0:43:25 > 0:43:35to be. With the drag reduction system you can overtake here. I
0:43:35 > 0:43:36
0:43:36 > 0:43:40think now our tendency will be to go towards the dry set up. The lap,
0:43:40 > 0:43:44the sector time in the middle sector is so down force dependent
0:43:44 > 0:43:50and there can be one or two second difference between high and low
0:43:50 > 0:43:55down force. So I think we could see some surprises today. Have a great
0:43:55 > 0:44:00race. Thank you. It sounds like Ross is setting us up for a great
0:44:00 > 0:44:04sessionment very brave, with these conditions to go on a dry set up
0:44:04 > 0:44:10for race? What he is saying, he knows most of the others are
0:44:10 > 0:44:15listening to this programme. And that is a decoy trick. I think he
0:44:15 > 0:44:21will split them and put one on a sleightly higher down force. He is
0:44:21 > 0:44:27a wiley old character. He won't give anything away on our show.
0:44:27 > 0:44:33they can take a Rhys fbg they want to. -- risk if nay want to. Mark
0:44:33 > 0:44:39Webber has resigned to Red Bull. Are you surprised that Mark Webber
0:44:39 > 0:44:43has stayed? I did, I think he was already guns blazing a couple of
0:44:43 > 0:44:48races ago. They have changed his attitude, it has mellowed you can
0:44:48 > 0:44:58sigh see why the decision has been made. The drivers are making their
0:44:58 > 0:45:11
0:45:11 > 0:45:19One is back in action after the summer brake and we have just the
0:45:19 > 0:45:27right challenge to see who's brain is in gear. Spa. It's a small name
0:45:27 > 0:45:31but a great race track and a challenge. Four and a third miles,
0:45:31 > 0:45:3719 adventures for each lap and corner isn't a good enough word for
0:45:37 > 0:45:42this race track. The three sectors we normally have but in the first
0:45:42 > 0:45:47and third, they're very much about full throttle action, 80% of the
0:45:47 > 0:45:52first is absolutely flat out, and the middle part of the lap, in red,
0:45:52 > 0:45:57is for all of the downforce is needed. It is very much a track of
0:45:57 > 0:46:02two parts in that respect. The first race scheduled at this track
0:46:02 > 0:46:06was in 1921, and was cancelled because of only one car entering.
0:46:06 > 0:46:14And the lead has been changed, it was nine miles back then, just over
0:46:15 > 0:46:19four miles now. And the last layout change was in 2007. And David and
0:46:19 > 0:46:24myself have both missed on this track. One thing that has not
0:46:24 > 0:46:28changed as we can see from the helicopter is the weather.
0:46:28 > 0:46:33Qualifying on a wet track with very little preparation, the free
0:46:33 > 0:46:38practice has also been out. It doesn't get much tougher than that.
0:46:38 > 0:46:41It is a challenge, it's fairly unique here, you come praying for
0:46:41 > 0:46:46the dry run just for the experience of this, it's incredible roller-
0:46:46 > 0:46:54coaster. And there are a few moments when you do get to drive in
0:46:54 > 0:47:02the try and that is just fantastic. Another Belgian Grand Prix
0:47:02 > 0:47:07qualifying and wet weather. Certainly a wet track and its
0:47:07 > 0:47:11forecast to rain again at any time now. What would you do now? Talking
0:47:12 > 0:47:14about tomorrow and the set up, whatever they trundle out of the
0:47:14 > 0:47:20pit lane with, that is what they are locked into for the race
0:47:20 > 0:47:26tomorrow. In almost every aspect of the race car. What were due to
0:47:26 > 0:47:29begin at -- what would you be doing? If there was a climactic
0:47:29 > 0:47:34change, brake ducts and things like that and there can adjust the front
0:47:34 > 0:47:38wing and the differential engine maps but everything else, the main
0:47:38 > 0:47:44base of that set up for qualifying is fixed so the real issue is the
0:47:44 > 0:47:47wing, how much downforce? 80% of the entire lap is at full throttle
0:47:47 > 0:47:52and in the dry running it is a devotee of the West --
0:47:52 > 0:47:54significantly less when wet. But you only have to brake once in each
0:47:54 > 0:47:58of the sector's so in a situation when running the correct wing level
0:47:58 > 0:48:06from wet, if a strike tomorrow in the race, you would be a sitting
0:48:06 > 0:48:11duck. I would go with the dry set up! So what will be slippery out
0:48:11 > 0:48:15there. We must assume that everybody will take to the track as
0:48:15 > 0:48:19soon as a green light comes on a the end of the pit lane for the
0:48:19 > 0:48:23first part of qualifying, which has 20 minutes. Hindsight can be
0:48:23 > 0:48:28wonderful but on the basis of everything, anybody who isn't on
0:48:28 > 0:48:35the track, they will be mad because they can get downpours which don't
0:48:35 > 0:48:41even show on the radar. So any time in the next 1.5 minutes, people
0:48:41 > 0:48:44will be going down to the pit lane. My son amazing shop this morning
0:48:44 > 0:48:51were Fernando Alonso in just a regular team here was standing at
0:48:51 > 0:48:56the back and watching the action, no work even near the car. -- we
0:48:56 > 0:49:00watched an amazing shot this morning. So confident. And the fact
0:49:00 > 0:49:03that they are so restricted on the tyres, four sets of intermediate
0:49:03 > 0:49:06and three wet. They were actually given an additional set
0:49:06 > 0:49:12intermediate yesterday because of the weather, which is within
0:49:12 > 0:49:15regulations. And reconstruct the session. They will be sitting at
0:49:15 > 0:49:22the end of the put in for over one minute, they're so keen to be at
0:49:22 > 0:49:32the front of the queue. It does have an impact, it is so long, in
0:49:32 > 0:49:36terms of higher you run the session and getting that first lap? Before
0:49:36 > 0:49:39they even think about getting the timed lap, the point at which they
0:49:39 > 0:49:49can show the first lap will be more than four minutes into the session
0:49:49 > 0:49:53
0:49:53 > 0:49:59and that is why it is crucial that the expected downpour. It is better
0:49:59 > 0:50:07to leave this first group early and then we will go. I was going to say,
0:50:07 > 0:50:10it looks like the pit lane is split. So, we will know in the Colin
0:50:10 > 0:50:14minutes who has made the right decision. All the cars have gone
0:50:14 > 0:50:21out so far on those intermediate tyres. With the blue paint on the
0:50:21 > 0:50:24side of them to give us that play. They only need full wet when there
0:50:24 > 0:50:33is a lot of standing water. We have a feature tomorrow explaining what
0:50:33 > 0:50:43about that. And look at those rooster tails of spray. On board
0:50:43 > 0:50:48
0:50:48 > 0:50:55with Sebastien Buemi. The rain is coming. Rain is coming. Let's go
0:50:55 > 0:51:01and get the lap time in! Ted has an update. I wanted to see if anybody
0:51:01 > 0:51:08has come from the pure white set up and nobody has. Toro Rosso
0:51:08 > 0:51:14inherently goes very well... Oh, a big crash already. That is Michael.
0:51:14 > 0:51:20Michael, with his tee helmet on. He lost the rear wheel. Because of
0:51:20 > 0:51:26contact with the barrier? The recently have put this additional
0:51:26 > 0:51:34tarmac run-off area. Let's wait for the replay. Some confusion on
0:51:34 > 0:51:39whether that was Michael or Nico Rosberg. He has that gold helmet?
0:51:39 > 0:51:49Running free, which is unusual. There is no reason why that we
0:51:49 > 0:51:50
0:51:50 > 0:51:54should come off, off the upright. Absolutely spot-on, eagle-eyed.
0:51:54 > 0:52:04gave them a little knock on the way down the hill so Michael Schumacher
0:52:04 > 0:52:04
0:52:04 > 0:52:08says... Unexpected. Out. Even with 20 years' experience and being a
0:52:08 > 0:52:15master of this track, he cannot get the job done on three wins. And we
0:52:15 > 0:52:22will see that again. Luckily that did not back him on the head. This
0:52:22 > 0:52:26takes the pressure off all the midfield team, doesn't it? We know
0:52:26 > 0:52:32immediately who will join the expected tail-end as the first man
0:52:32 > 0:52:36to drop out of qualifying. Not the way Michael would like to have
0:52:36 > 0:52:41celebrated 20 years since his grand prix debut. It's very unusual how
0:52:41 > 0:52:47that could have come off because there is retaining 10. We did that
0:52:47 > 0:52:57feature on McLaren with a pit stop. The pain should keep the not in
0:52:57 > 0:53:01
0:53:01 > 0:53:11place. Even if it is loose. -- the nut. The mechanics are discussing
0:53:11 > 0:53:15
0:53:15 > 0:53:23this but they are unique in that they have... INAUDIBLE. Mercedes
0:53:23 > 0:53:29are unique, they have this mass car system were the wheel nut is
0:53:29 > 0:53:35embedded into the We'll itself. We will see if it was the Spindle or
0:53:35 > 0:53:40the axle. Rubens Barrichello, they have finished changing his car,
0:53:40 > 0:53:47after a set-up change. So, lots of action at their but nobody has
0:53:47 > 0:53:51completed a flying lap. I think the end of that message was to an
0:53:51 > 0:53:55extent, that takes the pressure off. But you cannot guarantee it will be
0:53:55 > 0:54:0382, Lotus and version on a day like this. Most likely to drop out
0:54:03 > 0:54:08because you need the downforce and the grip. -- Virgin. It does take
0:54:08 > 0:54:13the pressure off the main midfield. But the pressure is still on the
0:54:13 > 0:54:18drivers to try the clean-up. They do have the grip painted onto these
0:54:18 > 0:54:22Kers. But we have seen a number of cars just touching the white line.
0:54:22 > 0:54:32And losing control. It is fast- flowing, as we said earlier, the
0:54:32 > 0:54:38average land-speed is 240 kilometres an hour. -- lap speed.
0:54:38 > 0:54:48It is still a massive average speed around the slap. Tricky conditions.
0:54:48 > 0:54:48
0:54:48 > 0:54:54It is. A wedding was over the line. This morning, it was 208.9. And
0:54:54 > 0:54:59that no were needed the slick tyres. Our destination was needed to get
0:54:59 > 0:55:09some were mere two minutes per lap before the start gambling on slick.
0:55:09 > 0:55:09
0:55:09 > 0:55:18It's about getting a laps in. That is what it could work out with
0:55:18 > 0:55:22drivers to get the better track conditions. The track temperature
0:55:22 > 0:55:26has been coming up steadily since the rain stopped this morning but
0:55:26 > 0:55:30that was completely dry on the end of the sauce, telling with that
0:55:30 > 0:55:38little bit of white but contrast to the top of the hill, conditions are
0:55:38 > 0:55:44a lot wetter. No DRS, no rear wings being opened, it has been dissected
0:55:44 > 0:55:49rated -- deactivated in the wet running. On previous experience
0:55:49 > 0:55:54this year, it should be quite soon? Looking at how quickly the track is
0:55:54 > 0:56:02drying up. Kovaleinen has been off the track at turn No. 12, the
0:56:02 > 0:56:07middle of the track. And continued. No yellow flag out for that. How
0:56:07 > 0:56:17does it look? Hamilton from Alonso, Felipe Massa and then Sebastien
0:56:17 > 0:56:19
0:56:19 > 0:56:24Buemi. And Jensen Button then, he has done 2.12. He is in eighth
0:56:24 > 0:56:30place at the moment. We're just looking for a he 18th place through
0:56:30 > 0:56:37to 24th on the grid in this session. We expect four laps before the rain
0:56:37 > 0:56:43coming. So, and opted for a Nico Rosberg with that window of
0:56:43 > 0:56:47opportunity on these intermediate tyres. Michael Schumacher will
0:56:47 > 0:56:52start last on the grid. Petrov does not have any time yet but he is
0:56:52 > 0:56:55about it. That confirms that Schumacher will be the only driver
0:56:55 > 0:57:01of the 24 not to complete his flying lap which puts him on the
0:57:01 > 0:57:08back of the grid. Bruno Senna in 4th place, standing in for Nick
0:57:08 > 0:57:12Heidfeld this weekend. He will get into that on the race show tomorrow
0:57:12 > 0:57:16when there is breathing space because this is just going to keep
0:57:16 > 0:57:19tumbling in terms of the times as the track constantly tries out and
0:57:19 > 0:57:24comes towards those intermediate tyres. It would be too long before
0:57:24 > 0:57:32we start to see them trying to cool those, even, such is the rate of
0:57:32 > 0:57:42change. Rosberg now in 5th place. Sebastian Vettel is fast as, Paul
0:57:42 > 0:57:42
0:57:42 > 0:57:47di Resta his second. Fastest now for Mark Webber. For the last five
0:57:47 > 0:57:51consecutive races, the man who was not at first, 18th on the great,
0:57:51 > 0:57:55has gone on to score World Championship points on the Sunday.
0:57:55 > 0:57:59It is a lucky position and that tells you about the Pirelli tyres
0:57:59 > 0:58:05and the DRS and the rear wing and the energy recovery system. How
0:58:05 > 0:58:09much of a difference that has meant. Before, 18th place would have meant
0:58:09 > 0:58:17you were lucky to finish and 12. But it's like a lucky dip,
0:58:17 > 0:58:27everybody gets. These days, top 10, anyway. You only got points for the
0:58:27 > 0:58:31top six in my day. That was in another era. Mark Webber remains
0:58:31 > 0:58:33fastest, for Sebastian Vettel, Adrian Sutil in 5th place and Force
0:58:34 > 0:58:41India in third and 4th, looking very handy on the damp track this
0:58:41 > 0:58:45morning. 23 cars on the track, that is all the runners. They're all out
0:58:45 > 0:58:49there, try to use this opportunity, Jensen Button in that 17th at the
0:58:49 > 0:58:56moment, he needs to get this one together before that promised rain
0:58:56 > 0:59:00comes. We expect this session to get trier and drier, we are to be
0:59:00 > 0:59:10on this by the end of the session. That highlights just how difficult
0:59:10 > 0:59:13it is to know where you are. Five minutes before the rain. You have
0:59:13 > 0:59:18got conflicting information coming from the engineers to the drivers.
0:59:18 > 0:59:22So difficult year. Some of the information coming from the radar
0:59:22 > 0:59:29and some of that is spotters, out in the forests and they will say,
0:59:29 > 0:59:33my head is getting wet, there is rain. As a driver, this track drops
0:59:33 > 0:59:37100 metres from the top to the bottom, interestingly, I never knew
0:59:37 > 0:59:42that fact until I read that yesterday. 1% more power in the
0:59:42 > 0:59:51bottom of the track because it is there were attitude and more air
0:59:51 > 1:00:01pressure. It still contributes to the speed. He would rather have
1:00:01 > 1:00:13
1:00:13 > 1:00:19weather coming better than anybody else as you're climbing up to Les
1:00:19 > 1:00:23Combs. Ted? TED KRAVITZ: the weather is coming in from your left.
1:00:23 > 1:00:28It does look threatening the clouds coming in. But I went into Mercedes
1:00:28 > 1:00:34and asked whether they know whether it was finger trouble or wheat nut
1:00:34 > 1:00:38failure, they say they need the to -- wheel nut failure. They say they
1:00:38 > 1:00:48need to get the car back to check it. It looks like they have said
1:00:48 > 1:00:50
1:00:50 > 1:00:55yes, they can rule out finger trouble. The clouds are forming
1:00:55 > 1:01:01above the track now. And it looks as if the weather teams disagree on
1:01:01 > 1:01:10the time of the next shower. It look like it is on the way. That is
1:01:10 > 1:01:20the double left as they call it on some track maps, Pouhon as we know
1:01:20 > 1:01:22
1:01:22 > 1:01:30it. Mark Webber has had a personal best. After this corner it is a
1:01:30 > 1:01:35minute in these conditions, well make that 49.5 seconds, now he has
1:01:35 > 1:01:40found more grip. Mark Webber is the birthday boy today and they have
1:01:40 > 1:01:45announced a new contract for 2012. That was a no-brainer, why would
1:01:45 > 1:01:49you split up that partnership? There is no sense, there is no
1:01:49 > 1:01:55question that you want to to have the best drivers you can in your
1:01:55 > 1:02:00car and the relationship between Mark and Sebastian Vettel may not
1:02:00 > 1:02:06all have been harmonious, but they have driven the team forward. For
1:02:06 > 1:02:11Mark it is his best opportunity. And he goes fastest, two seconds
1:02:11 > 1:02:19quicker than Sebastian Vettel was. But Lewis Hamilton beats that with
1:02:19 > 1:02:23a 2n't be 0.26789 Sebastian Vettel was a couple of seconds slower. Who
1:02:23 > 1:02:27else is delivering decent times. We have seven and a half mince
1:02:27 > 1:02:37remaining of this session. Michael Schumacher will be out and that
1:02:37 > 1:02:41
1:02:41 > 1:02:51will be we think his worst grid position in his career. With a 24th.
1:02:51 > 1:02:51
1:02:51 > 1:02:58Vitantonio Liuzzi will be 22nd. Jerome D'Ambrosio is in 20th. They
1:02:58 > 1:03:02haven't got in, within the 107% time at the moment. Petrov 18th at
1:03:02 > 1:03:06the moment. Perez 19th. They're both on better laps. So under
1:03:06 > 1:03:12pressure those drivers. Lewis Hamilton has gone even faster in
1:03:12 > 1:03:15the first sector. But Jenson Button was told, hey, we may need these
1:03:15 > 1:03:19tyre again, don't push them too hard. Just clear the bar. But Lewis
1:03:19 > 1:03:26Hamilton is going for it. That information that Jenson Button has
1:03:26 > 1:03:30been given would have been from his engineer. Maybe that is the, you
1:03:31 > 1:03:36know the unique perspective his engineer has and that is not shared
1:03:36 > 1:03:41by Lewis's. But if Lewis Hamilton has been told he may need these
1:03:42 > 1:03:47tyre later, this won't help the life. It has gone purple and Button
1:03:47 > 1:03:54has gone fastest. He has not gone purple, but has delivered the most
1:03:54 > 1:04:03consistent lap time. We were talk about how he was told they may need
1:04:03 > 1:04:07the tyres. They have been give an - - given an extra set of
1:04:07 > 1:04:12intermediates. So they are still using up that first set. I did see
1:04:12 > 1:04:18some, Sebastian Vettel unwrapped a set of new once didn't he? Lewis
1:04:18 > 1:04:28Hamilton goes fastest on a 2.03. You won't feel confident to just
1:04:28 > 1:04:29
1:04:29 > 1:04:33sit in the pits and watch these times tumble, whoever you are.
1:04:33 > 1:04:37real question is how much fuel have they in the car. The lap times
1:04:37 > 1:04:42could topple quickly. Dry running around here of course you would
1:04:42 > 1:04:47expect them to be down in the sort of mid to high 40s. We're not going
1:04:47 > 1:04:57to see this in this part, but it show how much space there is in
1:04:57 > 1:05:02terms of lap time improvement. The track now is almost dry.? TED
1:05:02 > 1:05:08KRAVITZ: Force India has sent their drive us out on new tyres. They
1:05:08 > 1:05:13think they will get a better performance from the new tyres.
1:05:14 > 1:05:21Paul di Resta is close to the drop zone. Sutil has pitted and he is in
1:05:21 > 1:05:27the top 10. But they're feel their intermediate tyres are worn out.
1:05:27 > 1:05:32DAVID COULTHARD: The only reason I can imagine in these drying
1:05:32 > 1:05:42conditions they would get more out of a new set is if thr there was
1:05:42 > 1:05:43
1:05:43 > 1:05:47draining. - there was graining. It seems b -- it seems to be car
1:05:47 > 1:05:52dependent. They found they get such an advantage from a new set of wet
1:05:52 > 1:06:00tyres, whether it is the full wet or the intermediate. So they have
1:06:00 > 1:06:07been saving their tyres. rethinking Jenson Button's message,
1:06:07 > 1:06:13the message was you will need the tyre at the end of this session. So
1:06:13 > 1:06:18coast a bit and then pump in some lap times. So Jenson Button loves
1:06:18 > 1:06:23these tricky conditions. He seems to see and feel grip that the
1:06:23 > 1:06:28others can't find. It is a confidence that he has. Immediately
1:06:28 > 1:06:34then we are seeing drivers trying to cool their intermediate tyres
1:06:34 > 1:06:44down to have a run towards the end. And how much fuel did they put in,
1:06:44 > 1:06:46
1:06:47 > 1:06:50how long did they think they will have to keep running. The last
1:06:50 > 1:06:54place man's Michael Schumacher's wheel fell off before he could show
1:06:54 > 1:06:59what he is made of. Fernando Alonso has pitted. He has decided he has
1:06:59 > 1:07:07had enough track time. And he has got enough time in his pocket.
1:07:07 > 1:07:12Massa is in as well. Sutil's gone out. Ferrari with a two minute
1:07:12 > 1:07:17outlap. We don't have too many second chances to get around before
1:07:17 > 1:07:21the flag drops. Ferrari have given up on that. Felipe Massa down in
1:07:21 > 1:07:2711th that is a bit bold. I wouldn't be comfortable to have only a
1:07:28 > 1:07:34couple of seconds to play with to the drop zone. But lap times could
1:07:34 > 1:07:38drop as we see continually up until the end of session. He is down to
1:07:38 > 1:07:4412th now. Sebastien Buemi ignores the main part of the corner and
1:07:44 > 1:07:47here comes the rain. So that might just save the day for Felipe Massa.
1:07:47 > 1:07:51Although if the intermediates overheat, you can still bring them
1:07:51 > 1:07:56back. What was that noise? He was so far off the throttle, he was
1:07:56 > 1:08:01getting the exhaust going? Yes. It is a perfect example of what it
1:08:01 > 1:08:07sound like. You see Nico Rosberg having to be aggressive into the
1:08:07 > 1:08:15last chicane. Outside of the Virgin. Here is, that Jerome D'Ambrosio?
1:08:15 > 1:08:19Yes just overcooks it on the way in. He is down in 15th. That is a
1:08:19 > 1:08:28replay, he is now on a better lap is Nico Rosberg. He has gone up
1:08:28 > 1:08:33into P8 on a 2.05. Felipe Massa is down to 13th with that. As we see
1:08:33 > 1:08:38Sutil has just gone through and we're looking at Perez. Paul di
1:08:38 > 1:08:44Resta down in the danger zone in 17th. He is on track with two
1:08:44 > 1:08:49personal bests going on. So Sutil has gone over the line. We watch
1:08:49 > 1:08:54for Paul di Resta. There is the Lotus going through of Jarno Trulli
1:08:54 > 1:09:03who is 19th at the moment. And here comes rest rest on the fresh
1:09:03 > 1:09:08intermediates. And -- Paul deResta on the fresh intermediates. He has
1:09:08 > 1:09:17got another lap to get himself out of the danger zone. Thiss why he
1:09:17 > 1:09:22was slow in the last secondor. -- this is why he was so slow in the
1:09:22 > 1:09:29last sector. It will come down to this final lap that he is on. He is
1:09:29 > 1:09:37down in 17th and close to the drop zone. Who would put him in trouble?
1:09:37 > 1:09:43Heikki Kovalinan is right behind him time-wise. Paul di Resta has
1:09:43 > 1:09:48had a poor first sector. Here is Heikki Kovalinan. He is not any
1:09:48 > 1:09:55faster. Ses a second slower. Di Resta may just get awhich with this
1:09:55 > 1:09:59one. All the times will be reset in qualifying two. The track is
1:09:59 > 1:10:03looking particularly slimey. Often it is at that stage that it I
1:10:04 > 1:10:11difficult. Heikki Kovalinan is running wide in that Rivage corner.
1:10:11 > 1:10:16He would have lost some time. He got on to the the -- on to the
1:10:16 > 1:10:21advertising hoarding that isn't painted with the special paint. The
1:10:21 > 1:10:28checkered flag has gone out. All those on their lap. This will be it.
1:10:28 > 1:10:38We're still waiting for Paul di Resta. He is going to go to get
1:10:38 > 1:10:45through. Tyres are getting too hot. The drivers aren't finding a lot of
1:10:45 > 1:10:49time now. Adrian Sutil has done a best middle sector. Heikki
1:10:49 > 1:10:55Kovalinan's put in a 58.0 in the middle sector. That is actually
1:10:55 > 1:11:01only four tenth slower than the fastest middle sector. So Paul di
1:11:01 > 1:11:07Resta maybe out of trouble. He Daid 35.5 first sector. It is all about
1:11:07 > 1:11:11Heikki Kovalinan and that looks like he is getting plebt of --
1:11:11 > 1:11:16plenty of traffic at the end. That could be Paul di Resta in his way.
1:11:16 > 1:11:22Heikki Kovalinan does it! Paul di Resta is down to 18th. Heikki
1:11:22 > 1:11:26Kovalinan up to 16th. Not watched by the director. So Heikki
1:11:26 > 1:11:30Kovalinan, despite the traffic, because you can complete the lap,
1:11:31 > 1:11:38he was one of the last to cross the line and he gets himself into Q2
1:11:38 > 1:11:43again. And Paul di Resta will be swhra gutted. I don't know if they
1:11:43 > 1:11:51-- somewhat gutted. I don't know if they told him to back off but he
1:11:51 > 1:11:57takes no further part in qualifying. This man, Michael Schumacher will
1:11:57 > 1:12:02take no further part in qualifying. Bruno Senna has been been faster
1:12:02 > 1:12:06than Vitaly Petrov through this sex. Only by a quarter of a -- through
1:12:06 > 1:12:12this session, but only by a quarter o' after second. That is the
1:12:12 > 1:12:15feedback from his run in Budapest on Friday. He was seen to be
1:12:15 > 1:12:19consistently quicker than Petrov in the long runs. So maybe it is not
1:12:19 > 1:12:26such a questionable decision to have put him in there against the
1:12:26 > 1:12:30more experienced Nick Heidfeld. Jenson Button was fastest. He was
1:12:30 > 1:12:37the man that found the grip by over a second from Mark Webber. Lewis
1:12:37 > 1:12:46Hamilton was third. We reset the times and 17 go forward into
1:12:46 > 1:12:53qualifying two. JAKE HUMPHREY: That includes cove, a good day for Lotus.
1:12:53 > 1:12:57We have found somewhere to stay out of the rain. They have a big tent
1:12:57 > 1:13:03here and hopefully the only Belgian driver in the field, the first
1:13:03 > 1:13:11since the 90s, Damilola Taylor -- Jerome D'Ambrosio will come out and
1:13:11 > 1:13:17have a talk with us. Michael Schumacher, do you they car failure
1:13:17 > 1:13:24was responsible. It is a strange one? It is bizarre. It seemed as
1:13:24 > 1:13:28if... Don't want to say it, a wheel was loose. Look here, it just in
1:13:28 > 1:13:35the middle of the straight, bizarre. We would like to hear from him of
1:13:35 > 1:13:42course. But not how you want to start. It is his anniversary, 20
1:13:42 > 1:13:46years ago it was. I was surprised. We need to know more about it.
1:13:46 > 1:13:52people are worried about the wheel comes off. If the wheel nut comes
1:13:52 > 1:13:56off, there is no tether. He was lucky it bounced off. But so
1:13:56 > 1:14:00frustrating. We want him to do something specialy time it feels
1:14:00 > 1:14:03like it would be the perfect weekend to do it, it doesn't happen.
1:14:03 > 1:14:08People have different views about Michael Schumacher. He was the king
1:14:08 > 1:14:12when racing at one stage was a bit more boring, because he dominated
1:14:12 > 1:14:16so much. That is not his fault. We would all like to see him have a
1:14:16 > 1:14:20fight for podium here at this, because it would be a fairy tale
1:14:20 > 1:14:24story. It is something that most people, whether you're a fan of his
1:14:24 > 1:14:29or not. You would have wanted to see him. That is not going to
1:14:29 > 1:14:37happen. Let's speak to Jerome D'Ambrosio. What was it like? As a
1:14:37 > 1:14:41Belgian driver at your home race? It is always a tough call, you are
1:14:41 > 1:14:46looking as much at the sky as the track, to know if it is going to
1:14:46 > 1:14:51rain or not. We had different strategies, I was specting --
1:14:51 > 1:14:55specting the rain earlier and I didn't come in for a new set of
1:14:55 > 1:15:05tyres. But I think in the end I'm satisfied with the qualifying. I
1:15:05 > 1:15:13
1:15:13 > 1:15:18had a good pace and now it is down it is the first reference, we have
1:15:18 > 1:15:24the same car. The fact that you're in front of him, you were very
1:15:24 > 1:15:31happy about that? I was in the beginning but in the end with those
1:15:31 > 1:15:35new tyres, he is ahead of me. But it is good, if you are ahead, you
1:15:35 > 1:15:40are happy and if you are behind, you have a benchmark. And with
1:15:40 > 1:15:42Michael Schumacher's slipping out, let's have a reality check,
1:15:42 > 1:15:46tomorrow, you will race in the Belgian Grand Prix and will have
1:15:46 > 1:15:53Michael Schumacher all over the back of your car. Who would have
1:15:53 > 1:16:00thought that? It is a dream come true? Definitely, the first grand
1:16:00 > 1:16:10prix I went to see was in 1994 and he was racing, now I racing on the
1:16:10 > 1:16:10
1:16:10 > 1:16:18same grid. It is a funny situation but I really enjoy a -- enjoying it.
1:16:18 > 1:16:22Well done, congratulations. Jerome d'Ambrosio starts in 21st. If you
1:16:22 > 1:16:27are a rugby fan, today is the Challenge Cup final and of the
1:16:27 > 1:16:33action and build up will start on the Red Button at 1:30pm. And the
1:16:33 > 1:16:39action continues after us on BBC One. It is properly reigning over
1:16:39 > 1:16:42the circuit for the second part of qualifying. Inside the McLaren
1:16:42 > 1:16:46garage, they have made some mistakes in wet qualifying over the
1:16:46 > 1:16:51years but who will rise to the challenge? He will make it through
1:16:51 > 1:17:01to the pole position shoot-out? Back to Martin and David... This
1:17:01 > 1:17:03
1:17:03 > 1:17:11man is very happy with his qualifying. He did a great job. He
1:17:11 > 1:17:15would not give up. Even after the flag had dropped. We had a session
1:17:15 > 1:17:19with it being too dry for the intermediate and the next challenge
1:17:19 > 1:17:29is letting it rain and see how quickly you can get the time in
1:17:29 > 1:17:31
1:17:31 > 1:17:34before the track starts to get wet. It is like an emotion, it is so
1:17:34 > 1:17:39hard to repeat the lap times and there is a window with the tyres
1:17:39 > 1:17:46are perfect. It is a chemical reaction with the heat and that
1:17:46 > 1:17:49does affect the grip. It isn't just the surface water. For years
1:17:49 > 1:17:55Brearley have been telling me that this particular surface, it allows
1:17:55 > 1:17:59the water to set into the stones and there can be a lot of spray
1:17:59 > 1:18:05coming off the back but the tyre is making contact with the tarmac.
1:18:05 > 1:18:10That suggests that it is relatively high grip track. But looking out,
1:18:10 > 1:18:15the rain is coming down. We have seen the intermediate tyres on a
1:18:15 > 1:18:24dry track and women now see this intermediate set of tyres on the
1:18:24 > 1:18:30ever wetter track. By the time it gets too full wet, they will
1:18:30 > 1:18:34struggle to replicate the lap times. Green flags waving. I never
1:18:34 > 1:18:41understand that. You just be to know if there is a reason to slow
1:18:41 > 1:18:45down. You don't need any reason to go faster. But do you think that
1:18:45 > 1:18:54for it and a third miles, would you just Neil those intermediates? Or
1:18:54 > 1:18:59have a chance on the out that? out lap, 95%, you don't want to
1:18:59 > 1:19:08lose concentration and find a puddle. Then you have to get the
1:19:08 > 1:19:13best lap because it might be the driest you will have the track. It
1:19:13 > 1:19:23is more as a precautionary track for the race control, I usually
1:19:23 > 1:19:23
1:19:23 > 1:19:31ignore this, I agree. Green lights. They just mean go. There are going,
1:19:31 > 1:19:34anyway. It is starting to brighten up. But the teams did that know
1:19:34 > 1:19:39whether the Adi part of the session would be the only part they could
1:19:39 > 1:19:43actually get a good lap timer. -- early part. You might find that
1:19:43 > 1:19:50some of those drivers pit at the end of this lap and then wait to
1:19:50 > 1:19:55see if it does not dry out. There is quite a lot of rear knocking
1:19:55 > 1:20:02going in for Alonso. And before that, loads of wheelspin. It looks
1:20:02 > 1:20:08like there is no grip on the back of these intermediate tyres. He was
1:20:08 > 1:20:14in 5th gear. Normally, that would be 7th year. Flat out in the dry
1:20:14 > 1:20:19climb. This is an apple pricking son, usually plenty of grip through
1:20:19 > 1:20:23this wonderful chicane. And then you have to be careful, this is
1:20:23 > 1:20:29where Fernando Alonso crashed last year. And down to one of the most
1:20:29 > 1:20:35difficult braking stones that I found in my career. Other you have
1:20:35 > 1:20:42that Get Out Of Jail Free tarmac around the outside now. It is such
1:20:42 > 1:20:48a tricky corner, Alonso getting those white lines. Mark Webber
1:20:49 > 1:20:51describe those as like ice when they have got water on them.
1:20:51 > 1:20:54hear that Ferrari are having difficulty getting this
1:20:54 > 1:20:59intermediate tyres up to temperature which might explain
1:20:59 > 1:21:04that excessive wheelspin. There is no benefit in spending a tyres that
1:21:04 > 1:21:09amount, you're just ripping away at the surface. I thought he was
1:21:09 > 1:21:14coasting along the out lap. It is probably thin on temperature. And
1:21:14 > 1:21:20you can see, just burning that very slight dry line, aren't they? In
1:21:20 > 1:21:27certain areas. They are starting to come back with some as braking up
1:21:27 > 1:21:32from the back of the car. It looks like a pretty skinny rear wing.
1:21:32 > 1:21:39Most of them have gone for that when level that is suitable for
1:21:39 > 1:21:44straight-line speeds. That must make it so difficult for 7th gear
1:21:44 > 1:21:51with no duress? Indeed, with DRS, you will get about 20 kilometres an
1:21:51 > 1:21:55hour extra in top speed. Typically, he would just be touching that
1:21:55 > 1:22:02limiter at the end of the straight. To make up for the other streets
1:22:02 > 1:22:08were you're not able to run the duress. -- DRS. You really do not
1:22:08 > 1:22:13want to be running at 15,500 at the end of the straight because there
1:22:13 > 1:22:23would be no power for these 2.4 litre V8 engines. They feel quite
1:22:23 > 1:22:26
1:22:26 > 1:22:32pathetic when you drop down to that we're 60,000 Wrens. -- revs.
1:22:32 > 1:22:36Broadly speaking, the wing level of the top teams is pretty similar,
1:22:36 > 1:22:40McLaren are running just a little bit more because they have bought a
1:22:40 > 1:22:44special new super powerful DRS system with the rear wing. That
1:22:44 > 1:22:48will bring more of an ankle for the downforce and that will be
1:22:48 > 1:22:54reflected in Lewis Hamilton's middle sector time, which was
1:22:54 > 1:23:01quicker than Sebastian Vettel. And they can use the DRS system in
1:23:01 > 1:23:07qualifying and that has been pretty effective. Thank you. Still
1:23:07 > 1:23:12Sebastian Vettel from Jensen Button, Hamilton in 4th. Red Bull, McLaren.
1:23:12 > 1:23:22Adrian Sutil, the only surviving Force India with Paul di Resta
1:23:22 > 1:23:23
1:23:23 > 1:23:33getting knocked out right at the end. Kovaleinen completed his lap.
1:23:33 > 1:23:36
1:23:36 > 1:23:43Sebastien Buemi, inside the top 10. You can see some mud on the camera.
1:23:43 > 1:23:49He has dropped at the top of ruche. That is a corner he lives were, he
1:23:49 > 1:23:59said yesterday. -- lives for. We will get a replay to see without
1:23:59 > 1:24:00
1:24:00 > 1:24:06damage has been done. There we go. Just over the top... He gets too
1:24:06 > 1:24:16much Kerr. That little bomb, debris on the racetrack, difficult to tear
1:24:16 > 1:24:19
1:24:19 > 1:24:24away. I wonder what they will do about that? That is the point where
1:24:24 > 1:24:30you hope you would just get away with it. But he has parked. He is
1:24:30 > 1:24:36completely out of harm's way, they do not need to red flag the session.
1:24:36 > 1:24:40But all that debris on the racing line and the grass. It is pretty
1:24:40 > 1:24:44much of the racing line. But easy to say from the comfort of the
1:24:44 > 1:24:48commentary box but a little bit greedy going over the top of the
1:24:48 > 1:24:54hill. I think that given her slippy these white lines are, I would not
1:24:54 > 1:24:58be kissing my car on them as you go over the rise. The car actually
1:24:58 > 1:25:06polls vertical one G in the drive so it's more than the weight of the
1:25:06 > 1:25:11car. That's the last place I would have placed the car. They have red
1:25:11 > 1:25:21flags that. Anybody he did a fastest first sector... Hamilton
1:25:21 > 1:25:23
1:25:23 > 1:25:27has done the fastest of anybody in the whole queue to. -- Q2. Anyone
1:25:27 > 1:25:35going faster after the red flags will take that penalty. Anyone on a
1:25:35 > 1:25:43lap, that gets abandoned. The time gets stopped at the top of the
1:25:43 > 1:25:49screen. Alonso had just gone at of the pits, he is on his out lap.
1:25:49 > 1:25:52minutes and 15 seconds to go. If we had a downpour and then restarted,
1:25:53 > 1:25:58they would be out on a brand new set... Intermediates, we hear from
1:25:58 > 1:26:04the pit lane. What does it tell us? 20 minutes, steady rain. This is
1:26:04 > 1:26:14getting quite critical. If it was to stop, they could we run the rest
1:26:14 > 1:26:19
1:26:19 > 1:26:23of it. -- re wrong. -- rerun. 50% of your braking force in the rain
1:26:23 > 1:26:30goes through the front tyre. The tyre is to be rotating to give you
1:26:30 > 1:26:34that retardation. As the all recovered to the pits. You want to
1:26:34 > 1:26:43be at the front of the queue, if you get a chance. The rain is still
1:26:43 > 1:26:48up there. Threatening. This is a very pivotal time. Who will be out
1:26:48 > 1:26:57at the moment? Also, Perez, Bruno Senna, Kobayashi, Maldonado and
1:26:57 > 1:27:03Kovaleinen. But that is irrelevant, unless it rains very hard. It could
1:27:04 > 1:27:09only have been for the debris. You would have to say, Adrian Sutil's
1:27:09 > 1:27:17car was really out of harm's way. You are right. Honest it was a
1:27:17 > 1:27:21freak accident. If there was an opening and the barrier. It did not
1:27:21 > 1:27:26look like there was that much debris on the racing line. But it
1:27:26 > 1:27:29is one of the fastest corners. It is probably the wise move to be on
1:27:29 > 1:27:33the side of caution. There is no need for racing directors taking
1:27:34 > 1:27:40any risk, and you would not have any martial running out there at
1:27:40 > 1:27:44the top of the blind curve. And the tyres are so loaded at the top.
1:27:44 > 1:27:52When you are pulling the speed and the natural G-force, but I don't
1:27:52 > 1:27:57know. It is a red flag situation. Once again, Mark Webber quicker
1:27:57 > 1:28:05than Sebastian Vettel. Bottom and Hamilton right in there for McLaren.
1:28:05 > 1:28:13We are wandering were Ferrari are. They would be out, they are P11.
1:28:13 > 1:28:19Alonso had just joined the track. Such a long out lap, you cannot
1:28:19 > 1:28:22really hang around too long. Certainly not and we have seen the
1:28:22 > 1:28:28trend this weekend were in changeable conditions, Mark Webber
1:28:28 > 1:28:33has more often been able to deliver the lap time than Sebastian Vettel.
1:28:33 > 1:28:43His Sebastien just holding back? He doesn't need to take any risks. Or
1:28:43 > 1:28:43
1:28:43 > 1:28:49is he genuinely not able to feel his car round the track. There is a
1:28:49 > 1:28:55long way to go. Let's keep a close eye on that. Sebastian Vettel has
1:28:55 > 1:28:59never qualified in the top three at Spa. We have not had anything other
1:28:59 > 1:29:04than the Red Bull on pole position all year. That is how it is looking
1:29:04 > 1:29:09right now. Plenty of action to come, it must be said. It has not been
1:29:09 > 1:29:12his starring role, qualifying here. It does look silly, somebody
1:29:12 > 1:29:16sitting in front of the car. But it's the weight distribution with
1:29:16 > 1:29:20the engine and gearbox at the back. It is quite interesting, the other
1:29:20 > 1:29:24teams like to look at that and had the photographers get underneath
1:29:24 > 1:29:29and look at the turning base. And everything that is going on
1:29:29 > 1:29:35underneath. It has been going extremely well of late. Adrian
1:29:35 > 1:29:43Sutil, still in 5th place and that time still counts. In terms of the
1:29:43 > 1:29:47top-ten shoot-out, he would not be able to take part. I with Ferrari
1:29:47 > 1:29:50and there is consternation on the engineers face, not because -- not
1:29:50 > 1:29:54just because the tyres had been shot, they will still have good
1:29:54 > 1:29:57tread but with six minutes and 53 seconds, they will have a limited
1:29:57 > 1:30:01amount of time and less than they would like to get the intermediate
1:30:01 > 1:30:05tyres warmed up and we know Ferrari is easy on the tyres and hard for
1:30:05 > 1:30:08them to do that. We have spoken about that in this session. I do
1:30:08 > 1:30:18not think Alonso is at risk of going out but it's less idea than
1:30:18 > 1:30:26
1:30:26 > 1:30:31in 40 secs time. That is 14.41 local time in Belgium. We speak to
1:30:31 > 1:30:37many different people in the world in different time zones. And the
1:30:37 > 1:30:44queue begins to form at the end of the pit lane. And let's see what
1:30:44 > 1:30:50they have got now. Is that a brand- new set? No, they look like they
1:30:50 > 1:30:55have done a lap or two. There is water in the groove. So he is on
1:30:55 > 1:31:01the same tyre. Mark Webber keen to watch thousand outlap go. There is
1:31:01 > 1:31:07a whole queue of cars and there is tho point in joining the back.
1:31:08 > 1:31:15can't afford to do a slow lap. We need to push for the full three
1:31:15 > 1:31:22laps. No problem. The second part of qualifying begin and Bruno Senna
1:31:22 > 1:31:29with a steep lerve ever learning curve this weekend. His only
1:31:29 > 1:31:38experience is with HRT last year. Although the Friday practice for
1:31:38 > 1:31:43Renault in Hungary. He raced here in GP2. He had a trip into the
1:31:43 > 1:31:48barrier on Friday. When he raced before it was on the Bridgestone
1:31:48 > 1:31:56tyres. So to learn how the treat Pirelli and handle this three
1:31:56 > 1:32:02stages of qualifying. He was on pole here in GP 2. There is Adrian
1:32:02 > 1:32:12Sutil, the man we saw bouncing down the barrier and causing the red
1:32:12 > 1:32:17flag at the top of Raidillon. caught the back end of Adrian
1:32:17 > 1:32:24Sutil's engineer saying, and Paul didn't make it. That is like the
1:32:24 > 1:32:30consolation prize, the interteam battle. He didn't maibt -- make it
1:32:30 > 1:32:36through. Adrian Sutil is still P5 and it remains to be seen who beats
1:32:36 > 1:32:46that in the remaining five minutes. The track still looks in reasonable
1:32:46 > 1:32:46
1:32:46 > 1:32:52nick. We have got people in front closing the door and won't let me
1:32:52 > 1:32:56past. It is impossible. He is not happy, is he? No it is impossible?
1:32:56 > 1:33:00Well, he is going to have to make the impossible possible with four
1:33:00 > 1:33:05and a half minutes to go. We have got plenty of traffic. We have got
1:33:05 > 1:33:10Senna in front of Petrov in the Renault. Not much of a gap there.
1:33:10 > 1:33:16He is going to play his part. Look at the traffic in front of Fernando
1:33:16 > 1:33:23Alonso as the rain comes down further. This is critical times for
1:33:23 > 1:33:28Fernando Alonso. This is as tough as it gets, as I said, they will be
1:33:28 > 1:33:32backing the pack up. He had such a fight with Ayrton Senna one day and
1:33:32 > 1:33:37trying to find ourselves space and finished about 6 o'clock on the
1:33:37 > 1:33:41qualifying afternoon. We finished argue about who got in whose way.
1:33:41 > 1:33:46Fernando Alonso still doesn't want to slow down. The back wheels were
1:33:46 > 1:33:52locked and he had to turn left into a right hand hairpin. The lap has
1:33:52 > 1:34:02started bad. I don't think his mood will be better. Let's see how it
1:34:02 > 1:34:03
1:34:03 > 1:34:09looks through the Mag niv sent la rouge corner. -- Eau Rouge Cohner.
1:34:09 > 1:34:13Up to Les Combs. It was a a real attack. For Fernando Alonso it is a
1:34:13 > 1:34:19personal best. 34.4. Still not a tremendous first sector, compared
1:34:19 > 1:34:28to earlier on in this session. Having to down shift on the way out
1:34:28 > 1:34:33of la koms. Let's see if he can get it slowed down for Rivage. A short
1:34:33 > 1:34:43shift up to get traction through the exit. No name corner, I has
1:34:43 > 1:34:46
1:34:46 > 1:34:51been called some things, but Pouhon is the toughest corner on the track
1:34:51 > 1:34:58since they sanitised Eau Rouge. Fernando Alonso will get his second
1:34:58 > 1:35:03sector time when he comes out of first part. Jaime Alguersuari is
1:35:03 > 1:35:08out there. He has done two personal bests. This is about getting into
1:35:09 > 1:35:14the top ten, the final part of qualifying, qualifying 3 as we call
1:35:14 > 1:35:23it. But they have their minds focused on qualifying two. He has
1:35:23 > 1:35:29locked the left front. He wastes so much time. Sebastien Buemi has gone
1:35:29 > 1:35:36fastest. There is grip opt track and it is beginning to come to the
1:35:36 > 1:35:42-- there is grip on the track. Bruno Senna goes sixth. Senna might,
1:35:42 > 1:35:47I tell you wha, with another two minutes, he will get a second
1:35:47 > 1:35:52effort at that. Fernando Alonso has gone fastest on a 6.1. He will just
1:35:52 > 1:35:58about be last man over the line. Fernando Alonso has a couple of
1:35:58 > 1:36:04minutes to get around again. Now, we're starting to lack at drivers
1:36:04 > 1:36:14who have one more flying lap after this. Felipe Massa in 14th. Mark
1:36:14 > 1:36:14
1:36:14 > 1:36:19Webber goes fastest from Button. Sebastian Vettel 2.03.3. He is all
1:36:19 > 1:36:25over the place in terms of times. As they finish these long laps.
1:36:25 > 1:36:32Felipe Massa, what did that do for him? Up into P5 with that. He will
1:36:32 > 1:36:40only get this lap in now. Lots of cars out there in traffic. 16Th of
1:36:40 > 1:36:47the runners, the on 16 left with Adrian Sutil in the warrier --
1:36:47 > 1:36:51barriers. We watch Kobayashi down in 16th and moves up to seventh
1:36:51 > 1:36:54with that effort. Still three seconds off the pace though.
1:36:54 > 1:36:58have seen Jenson Button make way for Lewis Hamilton. So I wonder if
1:36:58 > 1:37:06that was a call from the team. Lewis Hamilton is in 12th and he
1:37:06 > 1:37:09has done the fastest first sector. Presuming he gets a traffic-free
1:37:09 > 1:37:13lap, but Lewis Hamilton could be under trouble here. Traffic is a
1:37:13 > 1:37:20problem as we can see. Heikki Kovalinan, Rubens Barrichello,
1:37:20 > 1:37:26Heikki Kovalinan is down there, fighting over 16th and 17th, with
1:37:26 > 1:37:31Pastor Maldonado close behind. That must have been Lewis Hamilton
1:37:31 > 1:37:38coming through. He will catch a lot of traffic at the end of the lap.
1:37:38 > 1:37:43And will struggle. Some of these may get into another lap. These
1:37:43 > 1:37:47runners and Rubens Barrichello goes wide through Blanchmont. Both
1:37:47 > 1:37:51Williams compromised with that problem. They have got six five
1:37:51 > 1:37:56seconds to get over the line. Lewis Hamilton goes up the inside of
1:37:56 > 1:38:00Pastor Maldonado the flag is dropped, Lewis Hamilton won't get
1:38:00 > 1:38:06another run. But he moves up to fastest with that. He has his hand
1:38:06 > 1:38:15in the air. It was enough at that time. Pastor Maldonado down in 16th.
1:38:15 > 1:38:19Barr Parr only 149. Williams both - - Rubens Barrichello only 14th.
1:38:19 > 1:38:24Williams both there. There is the contact, Lewis Hamilton had to do
1:38:24 > 1:38:28it. But it has put him into the top ten. He is entitled to do that
1:38:28 > 1:38:32don't you think? Yes, he is ahead. There is no question that mald hald,
1:38:32 > 1:38:35I can't believe he -- Pastor Maldonado, I can't believe he
1:38:35 > 1:38:40didn't know Lewis Hamilton was there. Who crossed the line?
1:38:40 > 1:38:45Fernando Alonso was the last man over the line. Petrov and Senna too.
1:38:45 > 1:38:55They could get themselves well inside the top ten by being last
1:38:55 > 1:38:57
1:38:57 > 1:39:01over the line. And plenty of stuff for Senna in the Pouhon corner.
1:39:01 > 1:39:06Can't afford any mistakes on this lap. That is that exhaust blowing
1:39:06 > 1:39:16stuff that you can hear that we were hear sog much about at
1:39:16 > 1:39:18
1:39:18 > 1:39:23Silverstone. -- hearing so much about at Silverstone. Perez is 139.
1:39:23 > 1:39:27Will this get him through. Fernando Alonso is flying. Does he need to?
1:39:27 > 1:39:33He is in 12th at the moment. Somebody moved up the order. Was it
1:39:33 > 1:39:40Sebastien Buemi? Sebastien Buemi it was. Rosberg is up into fourth.
1:39:40 > 1:39:46Massa is fifth. Perez crosses the line and goes seventh. He is inside.
1:39:46 > 1:39:51Bruno Senna is right up there. Senna in fifth. Fernando Alonso is
1:39:51 > 1:39:55in 13th. Petrov has gone into fourth. Fernando Alonso gets in
1:39:55 > 1:40:01fastest. Fernando Alonso from Lewis Hamilton. Who did that affect?
1:40:01 > 1:40:08Jenson Button in 13th. Button is out of it. Rubens Barrichello is
1:40:08 > 1:40:1314th. Jenson Button, in all of that frantic last minute action, got
1:40:13 > 1:40:18bumped right down the order. If he did have to yield, you were saying
1:40:18 > 1:40:22you thought he may have to yield to Lewis. If he did, it has cost him a
1:40:23 > 1:40:31horrible grid position. He did move over for Lewis Hamilton on that lap.
1:40:31 > 1:40:36So whether that was a call from the pits ors -- pits, or whether he
1:40:36 > 1:40:41made a mistake. Pastor Maldonado, 100% Pastor Maldonado will a
1:40:41 > 1:40:46penalty. He pulse alongside Lewis and then takes a swipe at him.
1:40:46 > 1:40:51Unacceptable. Pastor Maldonado if he makes the grid. Is there any
1:40:51 > 1:40:58damage to the car stkph no, it was done deliberately, he cut across me
1:40:58 > 1:41:05and hit my car. I think my front is damaged. Front wheels. There is so
1:41:05 > 1:41:09lilt time before qualifying three. I spoke to Nigel Mansell and he
1:41:09 > 1:41:12said we have had nothing. It has been so quiet. If they don't send
1:41:12 > 1:41:17Pastor Maldonado home for that, it I not right. You can't tolerate
1:41:17 > 1:41:22that. That sends all the wrong signals to young drivers. You can't
1:41:22 > 1:41:27do that. I'm furious and I'm not even in the car. I hate to see
1:41:27 > 1:41:31unsporting behaviour. If he has got a problem with Lewis, he should
1:41:31 > 1:41:35face him up and discuss that point. If he wants to get physical and
1:41:36 > 1:41:40misbehave then that is up to him. Doing that on the track is just
1:41:40 > 1:41:45mindless. And he will definitely be penalised. Will they get Lewis
1:41:45 > 1:41:51Hamilton's car repaired in time? A new front wing is not a problem.
1:41:51 > 1:41:55But sometimes it does change the balance. Well the last minute
1:41:55 > 1:42:01action then, Senna got himself into the top ten on his return to the
1:42:01 > 1:42:11track and his first race for Renault, very good effort from him.
1:42:11 > 1:42:24
1:42:24 > 1:42:29Massa got in. JAKE HUMPHREY: Well done Bruno Senna. But that session
1:42:29 > 1:42:32dominated by incidents with the McLaren cars. Jepz make didn't make
1:42:32 > 1:42:36it through. But this Lewis Hamilton and Pastor Maldonado situation. It
1:42:36 > 1:42:39I no t first time they have got friendly with each other. Let's go
1:42:39 > 1:42:47back to the start of today and Lewis Hamilton was desperate to
1:42:47 > 1:42:52make it over the time. And didn't want to have mald' - Pastor
1:42:52 > 1:42:56Maldonado to stop him. If they have an issue with each other they need
1:42:56 > 1:43:04to sort this out. We're talking about debris, dangers to each
1:43:04 > 1:43:09others' lives and the public. This is unacceptable. What happened
1:43:09 > 1:43:13after they went around the La Source hairpin. What, it is as wide
1:43:13 > 1:43:18as could be. Look at this from a different angle. He actually moves
1:43:18 > 1:43:22straight across on him. It is bizarre. It is like as if he fell
1:43:22 > 1:43:26asleep. Or it was intentional. I don't know. We need to ask. This
1:43:26 > 1:43:30for me was not straight forward. There is something lurking in the
1:43:30 > 1:43:35background that we need to get to the bottom of. Maybe it is what
1:43:35 > 1:43:43happened in man Coe a few races ago, when Lewis Hamilton had a bit of a
1:43:43 > 1:43:49crash, bang wah lop time and stuck Pastor Maldonado into the barrier
1:43:49 > 1:43:54rplt --. We know Lewis apologised. My guess is this is long in the
1:43:54 > 1:43:57past. You have got a season to think about and he jeopardised his
1:43:57 > 1:44:03position, Pastor Maldonado, although he has not made the top
1:44:03 > 1:44:07ten. He knew what was going on there. And Monaco be lingering back.
1:44:07 > 1:44:12It cost him points in Monaco, there noise doubt. That was a mistake by
1:44:12 > 1:44:15Lewis Hamilton. But this should not be reoccurring. Revenge is never
1:44:16 > 1:44:20sweet. I find this difficult for another race driver to treat
1:44:20 > 1:44:26another one like that, it us unacceptable. You you're going to
1:44:26 > 1:44:32get revenge, the place is not to do it is around the circuit driving at
1:44:32 > 1:44:38high speed. Will what Nigel man several make of -- Mansell maim
1:44:38 > 1:44:42make of it? The stewards have a better understanding of is what
1:44:43 > 1:44:46happen and they will investigate it and have both drivers there and it
1:44:46 > 1:44:48will be a serious investigation. I think there will be penalties.
1:44:48 > 1:44:52David talks about Pastor Maldonado not being allowed to race. I
1:44:52 > 1:44:58wouldn't go that far. I don't know what the extent of the wrath that
1:44:58 > 1:45:08the steward will have, but it will have to be looked at in a very
1:45:08 > 1:45:13
1:45:13 > 1:45:21Hamilton's car? We are waiting to hear from our expert in the pit
1:45:21 > 1:45:29lane, Ted Kravitz, if he can get near to that. He is on his way down.
1:45:29 > 1:45:32I'm sure they will fix the car? the brush with the side of the car
1:45:32 > 1:45:37damaged the front wing and the suspension is quite strong in that
1:45:37 > 1:45:40area, I have seen cars banging more aggressively so they will not be
1:45:41 > 1:45:48too concerned and he would not pull the car out of qualifying on as a
1:45:48 > 1:45:52driver said know. He will have felt if the geometry was correct on the
1:45:52 > 1:45:55slowing-down lap and its Loch Carnan suspension, you can see some
1:45:55 > 1:46:04of the damage on the bodywork. That is reassuring, it means that side
1:46:04 > 1:46:12of the car took most of the impact. The driver is only one of three
1:46:12 > 1:46:16stewards forced -- for stewards. What would you do? You would get
1:46:16 > 1:46:20both the drivers' in, look at all of the information and once you
1:46:20 > 1:46:26have all of that, you make a decision but knee-jerk, Maldonado
1:46:26 > 1:46:30would be getting a severe penalty. In the back of the garage, all of
1:46:30 > 1:46:36the mechanics are looking at this and the sponsor's logo has rubbed
1:46:36 > 1:46:40off on the right hand side. It looks intact, these cars are
1:46:40 > 1:46:47ostensibly in parc ferme. They have changed the front wing. They have
1:46:47 > 1:46:52told Lewis to kill his engine. It looks like they're just going to
1:46:52 > 1:46:56relax and that and see if they can make any more changes. They're
1:46:56 > 1:47:01changing the tyres, putting on intermediate. Is that dry tyres on
1:47:01 > 1:47:06Ferrari? Yes, it looks like a car has been bandaged up and it will
1:47:06 > 1:47:15survive the session. Jensen Button, we heard a radio message and he was
1:47:15 > 1:47:24told to come into the pits and he said, are you sure? They said yes.
1:47:24 > 1:47:28Whoever is on soft tyres. -- Mark Webber. The bid 2.02 at the end of
1:47:28 > 1:47:38that last session so we are right on the cusp of leading -- Nadine
1:47:38 > 1:47:38
1:47:38 > 1:47:43those slick tyres. -- meeting. So, dry tyres going on to Lewis
1:47:43 > 1:47:49Hamilton. Felipe Massa has gone off from the exit. That's double
1:47:49 > 1:47:56trouble. You go up the road and you lose so much temperature. They go
1:47:56 > 1:48:03out of the Pits with the blankets at 100 degrees and this is where
1:48:03 > 1:48:10Fernando Alonso dropped, he dropped earlier. There is a little gravel
1:48:10 > 1:48:20trap. No damage. He will drop that gravel and for the others to have
1:48:20 > 1:48:20
1:48:20 > 1:48:27fun on. Just carry on and back into the tyres. Everything is still OK.
1:48:27 > 1:48:32That car will need to go through a paint job. That rash. They stripped
1:48:32 > 1:48:36them all down so there is no added weight. Everything has to come off.
1:48:36 > 1:48:46It is a huge amount of work so no specific damage to the car in terms
1:48:46 > 1:48:46
1:48:46 > 1:48:53of the potential that time what a lot of cosmetic damage so, Jensen
1:48:53 > 1:49:00Button starting in 13th, he isn't in this qualifying top 10 shoot-out.
1:49:00 > 1:49:03Sadly, Fernando Alonso is going through and now it's a question of
1:49:04 > 1:49:10really having to take a gamble on how much grip there is on the
1:49:11 > 1:49:18corner. You cannot coast through there? You don't have that luxury.
1:49:18 > 1:49:22You don't. We are seeing some of those out laps, they're going
1:49:22 > 1:49:32purple, there is clearly enough grip. What they just need to avoid
1:49:32 > 1:49:32
1:49:33 > 1:49:36is running out of that try-line and using the curbs on the exit. What
1:49:36 > 1:49:43happens now is everything just comes to us you, the tyres and
1:49:43 > 1:49:51brakes heat up and the pressures become right again. These tyres,
1:49:51 > 1:49:54lower than the car by 2.5 mm. And you have a proper racing car.
1:49:54 > 1:50:00last person to figure out that intermediates were not that hard to
1:50:00 > 1:50:05use was Nico Rosberg, he has changed in two sec. On the right-
1:50:05 > 1:50:15hand side of Lewis Hamilton's car, it is held together by two bits of
1:50:15 > 1:50:18
1:50:18 > 1:50:22black gaffer tape. This guy is darkening. This is the moment.
1:50:22 > 1:50:25of the reasons they might choose not to send Lewis Hamilton out is
1:50:25 > 1:50:29the negative pressure on the bodywork, it tries to suck the
1:50:29 > 1:50:33bodywork of the car so if it isn't held in place correctly, you can be
1:50:33 > 1:50:41quite a bit of damage. They have loads of dry tyres left, they would
1:50:41 > 1:50:51be very nervous about intermediate. Sebastian Vettel, on the slick
1:50:51 > 1:50:52
1:50:52 > 1:50:58tyres. And on board. No issues with confidence, I present his DRS
1:50:58 > 1:51:03system would have been closed at that point. -- I prison. We have
1:51:03 > 1:51:13seen the wings being open on track. They become available when the
1:51:13 > 1:51:15
1:51:15 > 1:51:21slick is on. Sebastian Vettel, doing 54.7. Lewis Hamilton, going
1:51:21 > 1:51:27through. Never completely off the throttle, that was impressive.
1:51:27 > 1:51:33Climbing the hill. And it is a hill. The camera angle takes a lot of
1:51:33 > 1:51:40that elevation away. It is the highest point on the track. He is a
1:51:40 > 1:51:44quarter of a second up as he gets through the first checkpoint.
1:51:44 > 1:51:53Webber, Felipe Massa, Alguersuari, there is Hamilton. They are all out
1:51:53 > 1:51:59there. All 10 of the cars are now on the track, unsurprisingly.
1:51:59 > 1:52:08have seen Sebastian Vettel to 31.9. Which is only eight tenths slower
1:52:08 > 1:52:18than last year. If they are lifting, it must be a tiny left, bravery in
1:52:18 > 1:52:20
1:52:20 > 1:52:25the extreme when you have partial wet and dry conditions. Completely
1:52:25 > 1:52:34flat through the second part. Full throttle. And we begin to see some
1:52:34 > 1:52:39action. This is the first time that drivers... Mark Webber does 50.8.
1:52:39 > 1:52:44He sets a new benchmark, Perez two seconds slower. We need to keep a
1:52:44 > 1:52:51close eye out for who gets across the line last again. As we watch
1:52:51 > 1:52:57Lewis Hamilton. He is second now. Half a second shout. Sebastian
1:52:57 > 1:53:01Vettel in the background, what can he offer? Still Mark Webber, has a
1:53:01 > 1:53:11few tenths of a second in his pocket and just have a second off
1:53:11 > 1:53:16
1:53:16 > 1:53:21last year's pole position. It is actually five seconds of qualifying.
1:53:21 > 1:53:26It is faster than anybody else and has gone so far. He has got a new
1:53:26 > 1:53:33personal and field best. In Sector One. As we watch him head down the
1:53:33 > 1:53:39hill. The car accelerates so easily and beautifully down there. Mark
1:53:39 > 1:53:45Webber, the second sector time does not come up after this she came...
1:53:45 > 1:53:52He looks strong. Your contract in his pocket, birthday cars through
1:53:52 > 1:53:56the post this morning and he looks very at home on this race track.
1:53:57 > 1:54:01And it is mighty fast as well. Having spent a week in America, the
1:54:01 > 1:54:06impression is he is looking awesome! He has been connected
1:54:06 > 1:54:12through all these conditions. A brave man with 1.5 minutes to go.
1:54:12 > 1:54:22Who would bet against him for pole position? Whoever will only get one
1:54:22 > 1:54:27
1:54:27 > 1:54:34more flying lap. Some of them will get to. -- two. Webber on a 49.3.
1:54:34 > 1:54:40As ever, the McLaren looks very stiffly sprung across the pond. A
1:54:40 > 1:54:43very difficult Mickey Mouse last chicane. Crossing the line now.
1:54:43 > 1:54:49That is one 10th shy of pole position. Sebastian Vettel goes
1:54:49 > 1:54:53fastest. Three-tenths of a second covers the top three. They have got
1:54:53 > 1:55:01one more lap and the R drivers out there who might get a second lap in.
1:55:01 > 1:55:06Bruno Senna will be one of them and Nico Rosberg. Let us see... This is
1:55:06 > 1:55:16all about the front row in the next two minutes. Rosberg is flying out
1:55:16 > 1:55:19
1:55:19 > 1:55:24from Mercedes, only 10 cars in this final part of qualifying. And watch
1:55:24 > 1:55:33Mark Webber. 6th gear. He has gone a little bit wide. Luckily, the
1:55:33 > 1:55:42water is gone. Traffic ahead, that is Sergio Perez in the Sauber. Into
1:55:43 > 1:55:49the corner. He is a few thousandths of a second up on his best work.
1:55:49 > 1:55:52has actually lost time, he is now down. He will not have enough
1:55:52 > 1:55:57unless the absolutely finds something amazing in this last
1:55:57 > 1:56:03chicane. It sounds like he is up at the very top end of his range, it
1:56:03 > 1:56:07is just not accelerating. Hamilton is flying out there. He had a good
1:56:07 > 1:56:11tow from that Sauber. He can get good purchase on the racetrack.
1:56:11 > 1:56:17Mark Webber in second place at the moment, crosses the line and it is
1:56:17 > 1:56:22one 10th saw. But this man, Hamilton, bouncing all over the
1:56:22 > 1:56:27place, yet again. He comes out of the last corner for McLaren, if he
1:56:27 > 1:56:35is third at the moment, he crosses the line and goes fastest, he is on
1:56:35 > 1:56:40pole position. Can they respond? No, Sebastian Vettel, half a second saw.
1:56:40 > 1:56:44Sorry, Sebastian Vettel has done it! He was faster. The time change
1:56:44 > 1:56:49in front of my eyes. Sebastian Vettel, once again, all pole
1:56:49 > 1:56:56position, with Hamilton and then Mark Webber. Fernando Alonso in 6th
1:56:56 > 1:57:02place. Rosberg, Perez, Bruno Senna in mind. Petrov. We had just seen a
1:57:03 > 1:57:06change. Bruno Senna has gone up into 6th place. We are on board.
1:57:07 > 1:57:13The action is still very much going on out there. Look at this McLaren
1:57:13 > 1:57:19bouncing on the bumps. And Rosberg has gone 5th whilst we were
1:57:19 > 1:57:25watching the replays. His final lap... Alguersuari remains in 6th
1:57:25 > 1:57:34place, Bruno Senna in seven. Also in eight days. That means Petrov is
1:57:34 > 1:57:44still on to personal bests. And he stays in 10th place. Letters
1:57:44 > 1:57:52recount, Sebastian Vettel, Hamilton... I can confirm, pole
1:57:52 > 1:58:02position by half of the second. Well done. Brilliant! Thank you.
1:58:02 > 1:58:03
1:58:03 > 1:58:08That is the answer! Thank you. Sebastian Vettel endeavouring to
1:58:08 > 1:58:14keep his tyres cool. Going through the water. And those are the tyres
1:58:14 > 1:58:18that he will need to start the race on tomorrow. So, Sebastian Vettel,
1:58:18 > 1:58:22yet again, the Red Bull on pole position with Lewis Hamilton, his
1:58:22 > 1:58:29car does not look good but somehow he got into second on the grid.
1:58:29 > 1:58:32Mark Webber takes third. Just ahead of Felipe Massa's Ferrari, who has
1:58:32 > 1:58:39out qualified his team-mate, Fernando Alonso, there will only
1:58:39 > 1:58:43start on eighth place. They skin from the results of qualifying...
1:58:43 > 1:58:47And Sebastian Vettel, look at that, just as we thought that someone or
1:58:47 > 1:58:51other than Red Bull would be on pole, Sebastian Vettel takes pole
1:58:51 > 1:58:55position by almost half the second. One full second ahead of Mark
1:58:55 > 1:59:05Webber, congratulations to Felipe Massa and Bruno Senna, who has been
1:59:05 > 1:59:11
1:59:11 > 1:59:16parachuted into the car, starts on 7th. Also a difficult day for Paul
1:59:16 > 1:59:20di Resta. And you can see for drivers outside 107%. We would
1:59:20 > 1:59:23expect them to be racing. That was a cracking session and we saw
1:59:23 > 1:59:30drivers clashing with drivers and Lewis Hamilton fighting to the
1:59:30 > 1:59:33finish. And a very stiff McLaren. Bouncing around all over the place.
1:59:33 > 1:59:38There are so many superlatives, you do not know where to start. We must
1:59:38 > 1:59:42start with the guy who just at the last gasp, Sebastian Vettel, proved
1:59:42 > 1:59:48us wrong after the school report. Back on pole position. Literally in
1:59:48 > 1:59:51every way. That was an amazing lack. And a wonderful example of what
1:59:51 > 1:59:54excitement there can be in qualifying. Abandon the race
1:59:54 > 1:59:59tomorrow. Sebastien Vettel gets pole position but what about the
1:59:59 > 2:00:02boys behind? Jensen Button will be frustrated, starting at 13 if but
2:00:02 > 2:00:06he did his bit for the team. Pulling over to allow Lewis
2:00:06 > 2:00:10Hamilton to go through and it nearly worked out perfectly. He was
2:00:10 > 2:00:20on provisional pole position. Always a team player but could not
2:00:20 > 2:00:24
2:00:24 > 2:00:30get his side of the team any higher to see you so soon on a Saturday.
2:00:30 > 2:00:35What happened? Misunderstanding. I did my first lap then and I cooled
2:00:35 > 2:00:40the tairs. Not knowing that I didn't have any more laps left. --
2:00:41 > 2:00:45cooled the tyres. The track is getting drier, with so many cars
2:00:45 > 2:00:51out. I think I was third quickest when I did my lap. Then I didn't
2:00:51 > 2:00:56get the opportunity to do another lap. So wow, that is massively
2:00:56 > 2:01:00disappointing and a big shock. In Q1, I was a second quicker than
2:01:00 > 2:01:06anyone. A misunderstanding and a mistake on our part. One moment it
2:01:06 > 2:01:11looked like you had to yield, was that to give Lewis clear air?
2:01:11 > 2:01:15that was my cool down lap. I didn't realise that was it. I would have
2:01:15 > 2:01:19kept pushing. But I didn't know that was it. I thought I had
2:01:19 > 2:01:26another lap. It looks like a dry race, are you are set for that.
2:01:26 > 2:01:29Were you gambling on today? No a dry set up. But our car is quick
2:01:29 > 2:01:33around here and in every practice session we have been in the top
2:01:33 > 2:01:39that he. So it has been very competitive and when we have been
2:01:39 > 2:01:43on the Sir vit -- circuit we have been quickest. It is tough being in
2:01:43 > 2:01:4813th. But we have to deal with it now. I am sure he will deal with it.
2:01:48 > 2:01:54The first time he is not in Q3. He said it was Mus communication.
2:01:54 > 2:01:59Seems to be the order of the day. Here is Paul di Resta. What was the
2:01:59 > 2:02:03problem today? It didn't go wrong really. I made a small mistake the
2:02:03 > 2:02:08lap before and we were a bit quicker and the team chose to bring
2:02:08 > 2:02:14me in, saying we were safe and we should box. When I got back, they
2:02:14 > 2:02:19said we hate to tell you this, but somebody's went quicker. Thai I'm
2:02:19 > 2:02:24not aware of the situation. I do as I'm ordered. We chose to sit out
2:02:24 > 2:02:29the middle of the session and go out when the conditions were west.
2:02:29 > 2:02:36-- best. Ieft confident we would have been further up had that nod
2:02:36 > 2:02:42happened. You felt you shouldn't be here. Just a wrong call. Another
2:02:42 > 2:02:50unhappy British boy. In the last five races the man starting 18th
2:02:50 > 2:02:54has picked up poinds. We saw Michael Schumacher not manage a lap.
2:02:54 > 2:02:58But the biggest story, Pastor Maldonado with what lacked like a
2:02:58 > 2:03:05deliberate swipe at Lewis Hamilton? Again we don't want the just
2:03:05 > 2:03:09interfere with what the steward's decision. But this looks clear as
2:03:09 > 2:03:13if Pastor Maldonado has ran into the side of hill. We need to know
2:03:14 > 2:03:19what the explanation is for that. Which well wait and see. Nigel man
2:03:19 > 2:03:24several is the drivers' representative with the -- Mansell
2:03:24 > 2:03:28is the representative with the stewards. If you look behind, you
2:03:28 > 2:03:32can see Eau Rouge. Tomorrow the true action gets going and it is so
2:03:32 > 2:03:35tight at the front with Sebastian Vettel from Lewis Hamilton, Felipe
2:03:35 > 2:03:39Massa getting in the mix, Mark Webber is up there. What do you
2:03:39 > 2:03:43expect tomorrow? Well I have learned a long time ago in Spa,
2:03:43 > 2:03:48never look for a prediction. Because it usually turned on its
